What is that at moment from a position perspective? - I think at the moment, we're looking at four, probably minimum, depending on outs as well. We're probably looking at a right back who can play wing back, a left back who can play center back, a 10, maybe who do you own C-so, and an experience center forward to take the load off the young lad, Emerson. - Okay, so nine, 10, and essentially four backs. - Yeah. - Okay. That will create some interest maybe to some of the defensive assets will come onto a sec. What do you make of the opening set of fixtures that you've got? I know as soon as the fixtures come out, you put an e-tter switch slack channel. I can see 38 stuff fixtures here. - Yeah, and it's the joke I used to years ago, but it's also true. We're not playing Fleetwood and Atcrington here with all due disrespect to Fleetwood. - If you'd just said Atcrington Stanley, I could have done the jope all, but you didn't do it. - Oh, sorry, that's my bad. But the fact is, I think like a lot of teams, what I wouldn't say is we don't have a long run of just playing top six, and we don't have a run where we're playing teams that we expect to be around us. It's quite a mix bag, which maybe is a good thing. You know, Manchester United in Liverpool, you know, two and three maybe is, but they put it home, gotta try, you know, and give yourself a chance in these home games. But yeah, I don't look at it as anything out of the ordinary for the Premier League. I probably would have preferred one of the four or five games to be at home, but, you know. I guess just looking directly at the first few, you know, I had a way to go to home for a palace away for his an ugly fixture for like everybody. And actually, he's probably not ideal because it's before the European stuff starts for them and stuff. Does it put a lot of pressure on game one at home to Sunday? And does it kind of almost like mentality wise, almost can't really afford to lose it? - Yeah, and that's what I was getting at with that game week four, game week five. I prefer one of those to be at home because it does nail field at that Sunday game is, it's really important because obviously last time, we took a while to get our first win. So, yeah, if we don't win that first one, then you're looking well, we're probably not gonna win two and three and then you're desperately hoping for an away win in one of four and five before the huge international break, which I think is about 17 years. - That's the danger isn't it? I think if you lose one, looking at playing United Away, Palace Away, Everton Away, with Liverpool at home, just break them down individually. Most neutrals are gonna look at each of them games and think zero, zero, so on. - Yeah. - If you're in national Brown zero points, it's a long way. I don't for a moment think that you will be by the way, Paul, come sure even in those four games, there's something there that you'll pick up, but there is pressure on the opening game, I think. A little bit like in a commentary and a whole playing each other in two. Also has that same pressure I think for them. For you, it's the first game against Sunderland, I think. Do you visualise therefore, 'cause a lot of people are gonna bench boost game week one. And some will have some defensive weeks, which some are gonna have some defensive Sunderland. And some are gonna have some defensive, I think from Sunderland as well. How do you visualise that game at this point? - Well, they're a really good team, aren't they? They did it so well last year. And at the moment, I haven't seen anything from them that suggests this is gonna be, once we're narrowing in on that to home game, we haven't got our full score together. They have right now. So we go into it as underdogs, of course we do. But it's one that we've got a target, I think as well. Which maybe is dangerous. Maybe we might be a bit over, overly bound to attack. But yeah, I'm nervous about it. I'm nervous about it. I think you're entitled to be making sure it's a bit exciting about it. - Just do it. - Okay, let's talk some of these assets then. I don't think we spend the thick end of 10 million pounds on a goalie from to sit on the bench from a team who played Champions League football last season. - Six nine. - I think he's up there. - I can't get him. He's a really six nine. - Apparently so. - Apparently so. - Blind me. - It's almost too big. - I'm being told to go recently, but getting down low and stuff. Does he look quite agile or? - Well, best fits on YouTube, of course he does. But I think the feedback I've had is actually surprising, he had the thing that for a six foot nine guy, his box is a bit, but I suppose maybe, because he's six foot nine, you expect him basically to pluck everything. So there's an element of, he can't do that, but yeah, I'd expect him to be first choice. We'll see, but I think Christian Walton will be back up and I think David Button will be third choice whose 4.0, he's quite well, early on, a lot of people like oh, 4.0, he's not going to play. And then we have two others in there. So Alex Palmer, I'm pretty sure, we'll leave the club at some point, probably to the championship. - Interestingly, he's got about 80% of the ownership of your goalkeepers at the moment. That's quite interesting. - I think that's because he's played a lot in preseason because the other ones either weren't in or had picked up little notes. Like Christian Walton at the moment, he's still injured, I believe. So I think people saw that. So all 4.0 starting keeper, I don't think he'll be at the club. - He played quite a bit in preseason, Palmer. - Influenced that maybe? - Yeah, I think that's what people have seen. - The Sherp and started at the weekend, didn't he? - Yeah. - And Palmer didn't play at the weekend at all. - So. - Okay. - Yeah. I think that's where we're going to be. - The game feels like, I had this conversation with Danny McDonald on the whole podcast as well. There is normally 1.5 million goalkeeper that always does quite well, Robin Rost, last year as a reference point for that. Nearly always one of them tends to do okay. The pricing of the blanket 4.0 of defenders though completely draws your eyes away from it. I think if all your defenders were 4.5, we'd maybe have a church and discussion that feels difficult now because the price that it defenders? - Yeah, I don't think given the other goby's as well who are 4.5, you know, Kinsky, Vibrugan, Leno, even Petrovich, I think those are probably all above our goalie in terms of where I would go personally, but 4.0 defenders, yeah, you know, can we interest it? - Okay, let's talk through those 4.0 defenders. I wanna start with leaf Davis. There was a lot of hype around him cutly years ago. Our gaffer crew amongst the patron community were like a few briefings. suggesting it'll be in the England squad by the end of the year, or quite hyped, wasn't massively impressed. I criticised his concentration really early on, and then I had an outstanding performance at Wildland, and I had to take it back. But the reason people were looking at him, and I want to say it was 4.5, if I remember correctly, was all this is the offensive one that you really want to keep. And I'm, unfortunately, it didn't really translate. You've already mentioned about a potential bias to maybe, if you play like a Daru Roshet, right back, move the left back further on. He played that at the weekend, and he scored twice, Paul. Yeah, he did. So is it coming now, and no one will be there? No, I don't think so. I don't think so. Who knows? Yeah, I still think that once we get to going into the Premier League, he will be more of a defender, because, you know, there are numerous amazingly good right wingers who he's got to deal with. But in preseason against, yeah, for Ray and Valicano, no mugs, you know. He looked really good, and he certainly was creating that extra one, either out wide or in that, like, inside 10 position, in possession. So if that continues, and I see a bit more of that, say on Saturday in our game in Berlin, maybe, but I still think, for the majority of our games, he will have to do more left back than left wing, because we're going to have less possession. In a non-Deathcon game, would he be the one? Yeah. This is even though I've just said, I don't think so. Yeah, he's still going to get more attacking returns than the other two defenders we're probably going to mainly talk about. This is now a Defcon game, no, unfortunately, that's really important. I've roundabout, so Callwood a game has a KnitSwitch defender at the moment, although I certainly recognise there are a number of teams out there, possibly going with two at the moment for that game week one, Benchboost, good luck to you people. He said the op has a big majority of their ownership. Signed from Fulham, performed pretty well for Morocco at the World Cup. Is he the best choice in your opinion? Yeah, he's got Defcon written all over him, hasn't he? And he did, you know, in limited appearances at Fulham, picked up a pretty good rate of Defcons. He played on Saturday against Valicana. To be honest, he had his pipe and slippers on for most of the game. He looked amazing. And I can't see us not playing him. And he just, he just screams Defcon, doesn't he? He didn't up Fulham. Yeah, I thought he, I know he wasn't fast choice, so he was watching closely. He wasn't bad at Fulham, but yeah, he maybe looks can be deceptive, but he looks to me like he's going to be our main man, and he's going to be the man that's going to be making those blocks and those head declarances. Yeah, it's not rocket science, he's big, and that's what his job is. What's, what percent is chance? Apparently, he's only recently joined in terms of the actual club, because he's been away at the World Cup. What percent is chance to give him starting against Sunday? Oh, unless he gets injured, 100%. Okay, that's pretty strong. Is Dara Shade minutes also 100%. Yeah, I would have thought so. The exact position is the thing that's up for debate with Dara, I think rather than weather he plays. So he's liable to be the one easy that moves out to right back if you want to play a basically a setback up right back. Yeah, stay at home right back, call it what you will. He could move out there. So if it's a back four, I'm going to guess then the final choice, if if we assume Davis is starting game, it one is it's not. The final choice then is between Fulham and Grievous at the moment. Okay, those to be avoided, I guess, because because you don't know we could be either. And why why go to those when the other guys are the same price? If they were 4.5, then you might consider the risk. But yeah, there's no point taking the risk. I mean, the way you explain that Paul feels like so obvious then that it's due because if I was Shade's potentially maybe going to move position, then you've got question marks on his consistency for for Defcon in the returns. Davis also you'd mentioned about maybe buying a defensive leftback if you want to maybe switch it up so long term that feels a bit dangerous. Although can I just point on that? Yeah, Gary O'Neill at Wolves. He had a stay at home left back and eight nor he played left wing. And I wouldn't totally roll that out. Okay. And you know, and particularly if you're playing away on the break, but you want to play four at the back tactically, you could see Davis just going up and down his engines. Amazing. Just go up and down that left wing. Let's follow on to the question then because as I said, a few are going to start with double it switch defense and take kind of like an all-in strategy to it. Would you prefer O'Shea or Davis? I think if it was an all-in one-week punt, I think I might take the chance on Davis because of the attacking returns because O'Shea's death con, you know, chances have gone down a little bit if he does play right back, you'd think. So I think I take the chance, but fret from set play. Not quite a flip of the coin, but we're talking 55-40. Yeah. fret from set play, though, as to flip that. Yeah, there's a bit of that. But Davis quite often will take set pieces himself. So, you know, I would imagine for the majority of people who are thinking of going double it switch defense for yourselves game one or double commentary for game week two and bench boosting in the respective weeks, I would have thought an early wild card is part of a plan here if you're taking that. So I don't think it has to be a long-term view. I if for those who were planning that as a long-term view of Davis versus O'Shea, I think it'd go O'Shea is my read on that. Yeah, I think it's close. I think I'd go Davis, but hey close. I don't mind that. Okay. Let's talk some midfielder wide options. When we last spoke, we spoke about Jack Clark and Phillogen Biddance. And basically saying to have interest in one, you probably wanted the other one, I have to move on or be injured because they shared an alternate minutes so much, but obviously both very instrumental in your promotion season. Are we now looking at neither of them starting game week one? I think that looks likely. Yeah. We've brought in a maida from Celtic who can play centrally, but probably in pre-season has played left hand side. Phillogen's agent seems to want to get him out of the club, but he's got a problem there that I don't think anybody who has got the necessary funds to pay that you million pass is interested as far as I can tell. The various things that he's paid for bricks here in Amano to say don't look encouraging for that. So he might be in the squad, but right now, maida looks a first choice on the left wing. But I wouldn't invest. Is there a chance of maida though? If you turn about the other maybe a scenario where Davis played left side and midfield, if maybe you bought another defensive left back, well I mean, it's fair as a Jacob Groves could play left back as well. Yeah, he could. Is there a chance on that sort of setup that maida could play through the middle up from? It's possible. It's possible. I think he is amazing the energetic. He's a top tier presser and maybe in certain games that's what we're looking for up there. But I don't see it myself. I think I think essentially he's too small to play up front in the Premier League. Certainly for a team in the bottom six or seven. You want someone with a bit of stature to get the ball to and get you out of trouble for a while. Okay, very enough. Right inside someone who's not the biggest either. Are we expecting Abduffat to start? So I'm from the rest of the year. Yeah, I think he's he's played out on the right wing. But in all the preseason games that count really. And of all these attacking midfielders at 5.5, he looks the best option. But there are numerous other options better than him in this game at that price. But he looks lively. So none of them 5.5 million midfielders appeals to you. None of it, such as that. Okay. Do any of the other midfielders appeal? We've got a number in at five points. You just want to cover off the two 4.5s first pool. Casey McAteer. Not going to be first choice for you quite quite clearly. I think from what you've just said. but is he likely to be in and around? minutes. There's a wide player right? Yeah, he's a right wing. I mean, mainly he can play right wing back. He will be as we speak right now in and around the squad because West Burns has moved to Leicester. So he he is next in line on the right wing. So yeah, he'll pick up points, you know, off the bench. But I don't anticipate him starting many unless Fatah, who picks up an injury. Okay. And the other 4.5 million midfielder is Jack Taylor, who's injured at the moment. Yeah, he had surgery pretty much, you know, celebrate promotion and then when it had surgery. And he's not played a game in preseason yet. There was talk that he meant as a matter of sea were, were they were aiming for the Sunderland game. I've not heard anything since then, but you're not going to invest somebody who may or may not play. And I, you know, if anything, I think it'd be later than that for the parent. Okay. Matt Seseba takes the sense of kind of the 5 million midfielder's really important player for you last year. Is that feel like if he's not available, it's a big miss or if you kind of covered that up that it's not so relevant. I think we've covered it up in the podcast six weeks ago whenever it was. I talked about the kind of it's. It's kind of gets very complicated because he has been, you know, I vote for him for play of the season, but I also looked at him and go, I'm not sure he's a Premier League footballer. And we've brought in Florantino Lewis who played that Burnley last year. He is, you know, basically, he's in that role. He's a six. He's, you know, a deaf con guy. He's very, you know, tackled pass it to someone better than him. And I would, I would expect him to play instead of Matt Seseba. And it doesn't help the Matt Seseba hasn't had a preseason. So he gets first go if he's your domain. Yeah. Make sense. So I'm guessing Florantino and Luke it's most likely starting first choice partnership. I like Luke it. I think that's a really smart sign in. But Florantino is more likely to be the more interesting FPO one with that maybe be fair based on what you're saying about deaf cons. I was just tracking back about his deaf cons at Burnley. He started 25 times last year. And he was really consistent with it at the start. And then it calmed down a little bit. It's kind of went in and out of the team and they probably became resigned to board's relegation for the majority of the second half of last season. Change would be did he did come in and start hitting them really quickly straight away and out of a runner's succession. And I wonder if it might be a bit like that for him. How confident would you be that you start against Sunderland? Well, I think with Matt Seseba's injury, I don't think we've got too much choice. He started in the game on Saturday. So unless he picks up a knock, I'd expect him to play. I guess for those maybe thinking longer term, he would be the most likely more so than Luke Hitch maybe to drop out of the team. Would that be your view at the moment? And maybe with Matt Seseba being at the moment, you know, the next best midfield is that we have and he would play in that role. But I wouldn't I wouldn't be overly concerned about that to be frank because I think he's an upgrade on Matt Seseba. Okay. Fine. I will say talks to him about Emerson, new signing 5.5 forward. Talk to me. Yeah, I've had the vibe from conversations I've seen on your slack channel on patron, you're not hugely convinced that's the vibe I've had. Tell me if that's wrong. I think I wouldn't quite go that far. I suppose this is a crazy thing to say because five or six years ago, we were scrabbling around for loans and free transfers. We've signed in for 24 million pounds and I'm not convinced he's going to be the first choice sent forward. Okay. He is 22. He is not quite 6.9, but it's 6.5. 6.4. Sorry. He's strong. He's got pace. He's pretty raw though for the Premier League. So, you know, we picked him up from Toulouse where he played last year. I can see why when we play on the break, he might be really useful. Put the ball over the top, let the lad run. See what happens. Let him, you know, see if he can prove his hold up play as well. But in games where we're hoping to have a bit more of the ball, I'm not quite convinced yet. But he did play a lot better on Saturday. It's good to go, which always helps us out forward. 5.5 is a bit too much in this game. But he's maybe one of the people we've been able to. If he stays for first choice, if we don't sign another striker, then suddenly he becomes interesting. Because there's not many others at that price. Again, you could have someone from one of the Premier clubs at that sort of price. Him with Bernie, someone else. Lightly will break out and be okay. It was in you kind of already answered my next question in terms of, well, in games where you'd have more of the ball, is there someone else within the squad currently that would be more likely to play the nine position? But I think you've already answered it by saying you think you're probably still going to add into that position. Can I throw a name your way, Paul? We'd not plan to discuss this, but Liam Delab. I said in the last pod, I'd be surprised if we signed Liam Delab and I'd still be surprised. I think he'll go higher than us. I'm not sure how I want him. And that's not meant to expect to anybody at the moment. I think the fans of higher teams probably don't want him, but I think coach is. I'll take him. I'm desperate. Paul. And I finished just higher than you last year, just about. I'm looking forward to going to Porton Road this year, just about as well. I think he'll go higher. I get a vibe from you, Emerson, probably a no for you for fantasy, then. Yeah. You know, come September the third or whatever, if we don't have a new striker, then, then he becomes a player of interest, but not until that point. OK, give me 10 second answers on the next three players. I'm going to mention to you then, Alhamadine, not anywhere near our squad. ACPOM. Probably going to be third choice. First. Think he's going to the championship. People think that they've worked out and sus the game, I think, with Sindri, Wally, Agheli, I've been avoiding saying his name on the podcast all week, one because I'd pronounce it wrong. And two, because this might be the right 4.5 million forward choice, Paul or not. Well, for a start, he's misclassified. He's a midfielder. He played right wing most of last season. He looked out of position. He in preseason has played as a number 10 virtue entirely, looks so much better in that position. I'd expect him to be part of the squad mainly because he's, yeah, he's young enough that he doesn't count towards a 25 man limit. So he becomes like a bonus player, if you see what I mean. Right now, I think he's our best 10, but Anis Mometi might be annoyed that I say that. But I don't think he will start game week one. Because you think my Mometi will know because I think someone is coming in who will play in his place. And sis, so yeah. OK, you nearly opened up a dream for everybody there, mate. The people, the amount of people that just rushed to put Bruno for Nandis in their team was on a humanitarian day, you know that that sounds like a weird thing to compare, but it just would have opened the game up a lot. Yeah. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets a lot of action from the bench. And, you know, we haven't signed that number 10 whoever it is. Yeah. So he could be very close. But I just don't see him being quite a Premier League number 10 starting number 10. But for 4.5, if he's your third outfielder on the bench, do a lot worse. Well, I think based on what you're saying there, Paul, he is actually there for. And I actually, you're a bit higher than him and I thought you were going to be. He's the 4.5 million forward of choice, then. That's the correct one. Based on the conversations we've had about other forwards, I, there's, we've covered most of them off already this week. He's the one that's most likely to hit minutes. So if people do want a 4.5 million forward, as long as they understand that the expectations are extremely low, he is the choice. And in fairness, people are not likely to block themselves off with four ups, which I think that's fair. I had a little look at who else is available in that, that group of players. And I didn't see anybody else. Somebody in correspondent week, my tell you that, oh no, this guy's been playing a lot in preseason. But yeah, don't. don't expect to start to, don't expect loads of minutes. And it could be that he ends up even outside the 20 man squadders at these days. No, I mean, I just looking through the 4.5s we've covered this week. The only ones we haven't covered that could be available is Sean Neve at Newcastle. They've got three number nine. So I don't actually need to answer that question. The most likely other one at the moment, actually, it's probably Dane Scarlett just on Salanky doubts. And I can never be longer than Richard and stays fit for longer than a week. So in terms of game week one specifically, if Richard and Salanky weren't fit, yeah, Dane Scarlett might get minutes opening day, but Tottenham will add something that's going to well, yeah, Gellie could be something that gets minutes regularly. I'm fairly certain Dane Scarlett can't be that. Yeah, I would say Valor Gellie's minutes are probably front loaded, but if he does well, you know, if he comes off the bench, performs well, does well in the lead cup, you never know. But yeah, he's probably the best option at that price. I'm not saying he's a good option. Okay, which which view on my metty, Dane, because obviously really good at Bristol City, I'm in part of last season. And you've kind of had this right there to take the best of what's happening around this league at the moment. You bullies well done, not not hugely impressed then. I think I wasn't last season. It he he had a very good few games, which was really handy when Nunez wasn't available, but Nunez was the slightly better of the two when they were both available. He's looked, he's looked lively in preseason and he might play instead of Valor Gellie. It was really interesting that Valor Gellie played on Saturday in the 10 and the metty didn't. But I think he could be a slightly cynical. He had six months left on his contract, I think when we bought him. So he could be a very good player, but one that we even looked to flip, whether it be this window or quite soon for a decent profit. Mammetti feels like he should be a conversation here at five million and he's not really. No, I think at five million, I'd take the defcons of Florentina and Luis. Okay. The other thing to flag about Valor Gellie and this is the case for many of these 4.5 forwards, obviously, he's young. So there is room for improvement, potentially. He wouldn't be the first player that had come up with a promoted side who wasn't a star or and then gotten a Premier League and suddenly was playing regular minutes. John Lundstrom for those who don't remember is the best example of that. But your say in Cisodew is close. Well, we're talking what lunchtime on Wednesday. Correct. Yeah, we're hoping so, but until it's over the line, everybody listening to this knows until it's over the line is not done. But he would appear to be the one that Gary O'Neal wants. He played for Gary O'Neal at Strasbourg. So he's the one that wants. These are the one we've been linked with. I can't remember if it's on my head another 10 that we've been linked with with any kind of quality or sense. So I suspect he's the one. Okay. I would add on to that and say that if it's for sure going for in Cisod, and maybe don't get him, he'd still telling you they are trying to act in that position. Yeah. Okay. Give us a predicted game week one team for game week one. Then Paul, I think I know it. Go on. Yeah. I think you do. Sherpening, go. I show you the up grieves Davis. There is a possibility that furlough would play in Grieves' wouldn't and I show you to skip across. But I think that's the back for Florentina Lewis and Sassau Lukitsch in holding midfield roles. And then front four of Fattabu, Maida in Cisod, even though he's not currently in the club. And then Emerson. I'll say it's it'll be Mometi at the moment rather than insist. A bad season looks like the kind of disaster like Gary and Neil's second season at Wolves, where there was infighting. They didn't play well. He lost his job after two, three months and the whole thing just kind of like collapses around. Yeah, they didn't in that season Wolves obviously recovered, but you can see that being a, you know, a three four manager season and it not working. That's a disaster. It's relegation except all. Well, you might be about to ask me where I think we're going to finish. I think 18th is par. I wasn't, but where do you think you finish? I think we're going to finish 18th. Do you think you're the best of the fray? Yeah, I do. I do think we're the best, we're in the best position financially. And I think some of our signings have shown that. And just the history, well, modern history of being there a couple of years ago, we've learned from a few errors we made there and a few bits of naivy to, but also we've been able to build as a club. You know, parachute payments are huge. We've been able to invest on and off the pitch. We now have scored and, you know, a stadium and a training ground. That is, if not, you know, primarily level.
