Inter Totally Cup quarter-finals!

The Into Totally Cup, a football quiz tournament among podcast personalities, makes its return. The competition features eight participants, including past winners Michael Cox, Daniel Story, and producer Charlie. In the first quarterfinal, Michael Cox and Daniel Story compete, with Cox ultimately winning after a tied score, advancing to face either Charlie Eccleshire or Tom Williams. The second quarterfinal pits producer Charlie against Duncan Alexander. Despite a close contest, Charlie secures victory with a correct answer on the final question, moving to the semifinals. The third quarterfinal involves Charlie Eccleshire and Tom Williams, both former runners-up. Tom Williams takes a lead after four questions, and the match hinges on the final round. The quiz questions cover topics like Champions League goalscorers, Premier League players from specific countries, manager changes, and World Cup trivia. The tournament format consists of five questions per player per round, with tiebreakers if needed. The semifinals and final will determine the champion of this prestigious, if lighthearted, competition.

The Athletic FC Totally extra, championship edition. Today in a summer short on tournament drama, it's back. Into Totally Cup, prestigious, prodigious. As we find out which is the totally regular with the biggest knowledge of what's happened on football, pitches, eight names, one dream. It's the Into Totally Cup. Totally. Hello there, sports fan. Yep, it's the return of this prestigious tournament, initially introduced because back in 2020 when players were strictly amateur and were heavy knitwear for each match-up. Since then, there have been classic contests and controversies from the early dominance of Michael Cox. To the fairytale rise of the man who coincidentally produces and edits the shows, Charlie, who's won it twice in the three years that he's actually entered. Nothing to see there. Well, this time he and Coxy are back along with the other previous winner, Daniel Story. So let's see who has drawn whom. Produced by Charlie, as ever with the odd stacked against him, takes on Duncan, Alexander, while Coxy and Story face each other. Then Colin Miller, in this competition for the first time, takes on former runner-up Benji Laniado. And lastly, it's Charlie Acochet, a beaten finalist in 2022 against three-time runner-up Tom Williams. Nick Miller has provided the quiz questions, but who can provide the most answers in the Into Totally Cup? Let's get it on. This is the Totally Football Show with James Richardson, part of the Athletic FC podcast network. Listener, in the six-year history of the Into Totally Cup, only three players have ever emerged victorious. Two of them meet today. Michael Cox is one with three Into Totally Titles to his name. Hello, Michael. Hi, James. Lovely to have you on board. Daniel Story is also here. Daniel himself a winner in 2022. And in 2020, beaten finalist for the first of Michael Cox's titles. Daniel. Yeah, just a pleasure to be there. It was, yeah, all well here. Thank you. Excellent. You and Michael old opponents in this tournament. I feel like we've played each other at least four times in what is it six years now, at least. Michael might have kept details. No, it's at least the second time. I think probably the third time we've got each other in the first round. I'm not suggesting the draw is rigged, but I do think a seeding system would be good for the competition's prestige more than anything else. Point taken, Michael. Maybe for next year. Indeed so. In the meantime, let's hoping that this encounter will be every bit as memorable as all those other ones that you may or may not have had over the years. A reminder that whoever does get through will be facing either Charlie Echocher or Tom Williams in the semi-finals, one round of five questions each, and then a tie breaker if needed. All right, let's quiz. All right, Daniel, you're up first. Question one. In this season's Champions League, what is the name of the goalkeeper who scored a dramatic late goal against Real Madrid to keep Ben Fieker in the competition? I cannot remember. It's a good start. Oh, God's sake. Peace to appear. Ben Fieker goalkeeper scored a dramatic late goal in the Champions League against Real Madrid. His name, Daniel? I'm not going to get it. No, sorry. Michael, did you know? I can't remember. All right. Can't remember his name. Duncan's here ahead of his quarterfinal. Duncan, do you know? Okay. All right. Anatoli Trubin, of course. Yep. Peace to appear. I knew that much. Seven minds. Yeah, certainly the answer. Michael, your first question. In this season's Champions League, which club knocked out Inter last season's losing finalists? There was Boudou Glimpt, wasn't it? It was. Correct. One point to Michael. Question two, Daniel. Who is the only player from Kenya or Kenya to have appeared in the Premier League? Victor Wangyang. Correct. You're on the board. Michael, your second question. Who's the only player from Cuba to have appeared in the Premier League? I feel like this was fairly recently. If some reason I feel like you play for Norwich. Cuban player. Yes, struggling slightly with that one. Cuban player in the Premier League. Only one of Norwich would. Or was it. I'm struggling. I think I'm going to have to pass. Okay. The answer was. Onell Hernandez. And he did play for Norwich. The score then tied at one point a piece. As we head into question three. Half a point for that. As we go, you're better than that, Michael. As we head into question three, Daniel. This to take the lead. What is the next name in this sequence? Pep Guardiola. Jürgen Klopp. Simone Enzagi. Edin Terzic. And. Okay, so it's. I mean, I think the answer is losing. Finalists in the Champions League managers. So it'll be Simone Enzagi again. It's correct. Daniel. You're in the lead. Michael, how do you respond as I ask you? What is the next club in this sequence? Fullham. Burnley. Leicester City. Leeds United. And. Those clubs again. Fullham. Burnley. Leicester City. Leeds United. And then who? Right, so I think it's teams who finished bottom. Is that right? Did they finish bottom? Leeds finished bottom? Trying to work out the years here. So fullham. Burnley. Leicester City. Leeds United. And then who? [Music] I'm struggling to work out the pattern here, so I'm going to go for Southampton. Is incorrect. That the last five clubs to win the championship, Michael. Coventry City is the answer. [Laughs] Yeah. Hmm. The other way around, yeah. Yeah. A thin line between correct and. Incorrect. Question four then, and Daniel holding a one-point lead. Michael, can you pull level with your fourth question, which is. Does Thomas Muller play for? Uh. I think he's with Vancouver White Cup. Is correct. Score line two two. As Daniel, I ask you, which Emmaless club does. With R.H.R. play for? [Music] I mean, I. I don't know, which is the first problem. Um. I don't know why, but in my head it begins with C, which is. I've got actually no reason for thinking that, but. And I'm trying to think clubs that begin with C, which would therefore be. Chicago Fire. Or. I mean, I might just be completely barking at the wrong tree as well. Uh. Can I have to press you for an answer, Daniel? Why do I think it begins with C? I mean, I'll just gas Chicago Fire. You were right when you said it began with a C, it's Charlotte F C. It begins an end. Oh, it's a. Ugh. Yeah. Yep. How about that? All square. All square as we head into the fifth question. Daniel, here's your question number five. Four countries will be making their World Cup debuts this summer. Can you name three of them? Oh, goodness. Um. Let's go through continent by continent. Okay, so Cape Verde is one. Mm-hmm. I should have others more quickly than this. Which is a problem. Who's becky Stan? Correct, who? Just need one more. Yep, so here. Come on. I mean, can I clarify? You can choose whether you want to clarify this or not, but just DRC, just DRC count on the basis they used to be cause I hear, is that one country or. No, they don't count. Okay, fine. I mean, not fine, but fine. And your third one? Yeah, so it's not them. It's not them. Why can't I get the one? Can I have to approach you for another? I'm sorry. Cape Verde was becky Stan and there are two other World Cup Debitance this summer. Only one of them is required. No, these are ones. Do you have an answer, Daniel? I will do very shortly. I'm trying to think of gains I'm going to in the down thing. Counting you down. Ten seconds. Nine, eight, seven. Yeah, I don't know. I mean, I'll say Iraq even though I know it's not right. Well, it's not right. Finally enough, the correct answer. Does begin with a C or one of them. Anyway, could it sound? Of course. And Jordan. Jordan was your other option. So the scoreline still tied, Michael, the semifinals of this year's inter-totally cup. Michael, question five. Which of the following cities will not be hosting a game at this summer's World Cup? Philadelphia, Atlanta, Chicago, or Seattle? Which of those cities will not be hosting a game at this summer's World Cup? That is Chicago. Is correct! Michael, you're through to the semifinal of the 2026 inter-totally cup. How'd you feel? Really, I think I've probably got slightly lucky with the questions. I think Daniel probably would have got as many as I did. And probably, as an EFL man, probably would have got that one about the championship. Winners, right. So I probably got a bit lucky with the questions, but got unlucky with the draw. So, you know, even as itself out. For me, not for Daniel. He's been screwed over in both respects. Yeah. That's something for you to take away, Daniel. Yeah, what Michael said. No, fair play. I would have. Yeah, I would have not got the player from Cuba. I'm happy to admit that. So I think I got the easier one there with Wanyama. That was a bit of a tapping. So, yeah, no complaints. All right, then. Very sporting. Well, for Michael, it will be either Charlie Acrochet or Tom Williams in the semifinal will find out which, soon enough, next up, quarterfinal two, sees producer Charlie take on Duncan Alexander. Quarterfinal two. And this is Insta Totally Cup. See, Duncan Alexander taking on producer Charlie. Producer Charlie, hello, welcome. Hello. To this side of that glass booth wall. I know. Scary. Well, scary, particularly when you're facing a competitor, Mascene and intense as Duncan Alexander. Duncan, you are known as quite the dawn of the game. But, into Totally, it's been your one missing link. Yeah, I mean, missing link might be the phrase, but I think it's more that I'm a constructor rather than a, I'm a director of football rather than a center forward. But, you know, it's good to get your legs moving down again. So, yeah, we'll see. It's always tough facing Charlie because he's the controller. He can edit, even if I get the right answer. Who's to know what will be sent out onto the airwaves? Last Saturday. Indeed so. [LAUGHS] Producer Charlie, the reigning champion, Duncan Alexander, quiz veteran. Each will face five questions each. And then we'll have a tiebreaker if that's necessary. Whoever goes through today will face either Colin Miller or Benji Laniado in the semi-finals. Charlie, you're at first. Here comes question one. Question one, Charlie. Name the Premier League clubs who have sacked more than one manager this season. Nottingham Forest. Tottenham. Sacked more than one manager this season. Chelsea? Correct. [BELL RINGS] A point for Charlie, Duncan. Your first question. Name the managers who have taken charge of more than one Premier League club this season. That's a lot of names, isn't it? We've got time. No, no. Correct. No, no, no, no, spirits of Santa with Nottingham Forest and West Ham. And. Vita Pereira. Correct. With walls and Nottingham Forest. All square then as we head into question two. Casemiro has played, Charlie, for Real Madrid, Manchester United and which other European club. Absolutely no idea. [BELL RINGS] I'm going to guess Leon. Is incorrect. It's Porto. Duncan, this to take the lead. Fabiniel played for Monaco, Liverpool and which other European club. I knew the Porto one in the last. Lucky draw. Simply the luck of the draw. Fabiniel. Liverpool. Yeah, Fabiniel's played for Monaco, Liverpool and which other European club. Roma. Incorrect. The answer is Real Madrid. Oh yeah. Still square then as we head into question three. Charlie, who is the current manager of Norwich City? Philippe Clemand. Is correct. [BELL RINGS] Two points to Charlie. Duncan, question three. Who is the current manager of Swansea City? Um. He came good, didn't he? It was in the season. But I can't think who it is. Um. No, not got it. [BELL RINGS] Vittor Matos. Oh yeah. Another one of the V-tools. They're everywhere. Charlie, with a slender one-point lead then as we head into question four. Duncan, you're up first. Duncan, which club is missing from Danny Wilbeck's career path? Manchester United. Preston. Sunderland on loan. Arsenal. And Brighton. Uh, what food? Is correct. [BELL RINGS] Charlie, he's level with you. Here's your question four. Which club is missing from James Milner's career path? Leads. Swindon Town on loan. Newcastle. Manchester City. Liverpool. And Brighton. One club is missing from that career path. Astamville. It's correct. Incredible. It's a three-two lead then as we head into the final question. Duncan. Argentina won the 2022 World Cup Final on penalties. Which other side did they beat by that method during the tournament? The Netherlands. Is correct. Which means that it's all square as Charlie replies to this question. Charlie. Which former Premier League player scored the opening goal of the 2022 World Cup? Anivalence. Is correct. Charlie, you are through to the semi-final of the 2026 into totally Cup. Thank you. Strawberry. How do you feel? You seem quite tense ahead of the tournament. I feel fortunate because I would not have got the Swansea question. Very fortunate to get the knowledge end of that stick. But yeah, we move. You've just got to get through the early rounds and hopefully your form will pick up. That's correct. Throughout the tournament. All right. Well, you're already through to the semi-final title defence underway. Duncan, any thoughts? Yeah, I would have got the Casamero one. But you know, it's the way it lands. Isn't it though? Yeah. Who will you be facing in the semi-final? It's either Colin. Miller or Benzillaniado. Before they clash though, next up we'll be seeing 2022 runner-up Charlie Eccleshire taking on three-time beaten finalist Tom Williams, who's back for more punishment. We're going to find a three and it's a belter in prospect as Charlie Eccleshire faces Tom Williams in the match up the Duncan Alexander coin L runner-up echo. L runner-up echo Tom. Yeah, the bridesmaid's derby. That's another one that's been really been bandied around. You've been the beaten finalist in the last three competitions. That's remarkable. Yeah, current plan is to lose as quickly as possible and just get that. And that's equal. Get that monkey off my back. Right. Or Coxie was the monkey who beat you in 2024. He's waiting in the next round for whoever makes it out of this quarter final. Charlie Eccleshire, your opponent yourself have tasted the bitter tears of the final defeat in 2022. Yeah, between us we've lost the last four finals. Yeah. You have the match point to borrow the turn of expression. I did. Yeah, I'm looking at Yannick's inner inspiration. He is, I think, the only player in the open ero to have had match points in the grand final and lost, but he then rebounded and won Wimbledon. He's very next grand slam. So, you know, it can be done. Ten is knowledge that we'll do you no good whatsoever. And this exclusively football quiz. Well, best of luck to you both as our previous quarter finals, one round of five questions and then a tie breaker if needed. And Michael Cox, looming large for whoever makes it true. Who wants to go first? Sure. Charlie, your first question then. Which club did both Enrico Cesar and his son, Federico Cesar, play for? Yourantina is correct. Tom, father and son duo Justin and Patrick Cliveert both played for iax and which other club? They played together. Well, they didn't play together. They both featured for iax and they both also featured for another side. But what club was that? Remember, you're trying to get out as fast as possible. So going well so far, give us a wrong answer. Why is that? Why is that come to mind? Where does what come to mind? Roma is incorrect. Although, Patrick Cliveert did turn out for the JLR off-see. His father did not. Valencia is the correct answer. Valencia everybody. I had, I mean, forgotten that. So, a one point lead for Charlie Ecclescher. Tom, let's see if you can pull level with your second question. What is the name of the current PSV Itov and manager? Is it? Is it Peter Boss? I'm really looking for an answer rather than a question. However, if you're maintaining that it's Peter Boss, allow me to offer you a fan point. Boom, you're on the scoreboard. Charlie, how do you respond? As I ask you, what is the name of the current PORTO manager as we record? Sorry. A bit of Portuguese slipping out there. I'm trying to think when would I have heard of PORTO this season. When indeed? Well, PORTO manager. It's not Sergio Conce salle. Well, that's correct. But I'm afraid I can't give you a point for that. Tom, do you want to tell him? Francesca Fariole is correct. So it's one-one at the end of the second round of questions, third round of questions, immediately upon us. And it sounds like this for you, Charlie. I'm going to give you two years. The first relates to a World Cup final and the second. To a Champions League final, one player and one player only appeared in both these games. But who is it? The years are 1998 and 2000. So that's a World Cup final and the Champions League final. That's correct. One player featured in both of those matches, the World Cup final and the Champions League final. 98 and 2000. Who was that player? Fiendish question could see Orvnik Miller this. I've got a player in my head and I can't shake him off. Christian Carambo? It is incorrect. I'm a fr*ck. Tom, did you know? Is it Roberto Carlos? Oh, look at you with the correct answer when you didn't need it. Yes. Story of my life, James. Roberto Carlos is correct. All right then. This is to take a one-point lead, Tom. Two years for you as well. Again, the first relates to a World Cup final and the second to a Champions League final and one player and one player only appeared in both those matches. Who is it? Your years are 2010 and 2013. 2010 World Cup final and then 2013 Champions League final. Which I went to. Did I give him an advantage? Probably not. Good spinning for time though. Oh! Oh, your Robin. Is correct! Is correct. Tom Williams. With a two-one lead as we head into question four, Charlie. Which league one club plays at the Kirk Lee's stadium. He's laughing at you. No, I'm laughing at myself because I don't know. League one club. A club in league one. Kirk Lee's stadium. Javanata? No. Do you want to guess a league one club? Yeah. You guess that's what I can do, right? Yeah. Northampton town. Oh, I had to sink her out in the frame. Tom? I don't know. Peter Broth. Again. So very wrong. How does field town? Wow. How does field town? All right, Tom. This to extend your lead after four questions. Which league one club plays at the tough sheet community stadium? Sorry. This is a wind out. Which league one club Tom plays at the tough sheet community stadium? The tough sheet. Community stadium. Community stadium. Correct. I don't know. League one club. Tough sheet community stadium. What was it saying? It's stabbing the dark. Barnsley. Bolton Wondra's. Oh, so close. Bolton Wondra's. So the score remains two, one, with just one round to go before we hit an eventual tie breaker. Charlie, you're up first to try and pull level. Which country am I describing via their past World Cup performances? They've reached the final on more than one occasion. But never won it. They've been eliminated on penalties that they lost two World Cups. And one of their players called the fastest ever goal in a final after just 90 seconds. Which country is that? Do you want those details again? Yes, please. They've reached the final on more than one occasion, but never won it. They've been eliminated on penalties in their last two World Cups. And one of their players scored the fastest ever goal in a final, taking just 90 seconds to net. Netherlands. It's correct. Tom. Your question five, with a correct answer, you're through to the semi-finals. And a potential revenge match with Michael Cox. Otherwise, it's a tie breaker. Let's see. Which country Tom am I describing via their past World Cup performances? 2026 will be their third World Cup. Their first one was in 1954. Their best ever finish is third. And one of their players called the fastest ever goal at a World Cup after just 11 seconds. So this summer's World Cup will be their third tournament. Their first one was in 1954 their highest ever finish was third And one of their players called the fastest ever goal at a World Cup taking just 11 seconds to score Which country is that I think it's turkey I think You're through to the semifinal of the inter total hiccup wow Tom how'd you feel? Yeah, I think some of the questions were tougher than others. I think some of Benji's were slightly more challenging at times. Yeah, absolutely right. Yeah. Complete trebles. Anonymous in victory, I'd like to say. But yeah, obviously the draw, the semifinal draws. It's not the one anyone would want. There are no easy matchups at this level. That's true. That is true.
