INFANT EMBALMING CONTENT WARNING : Quizlet : Infant Embalming Practices

Hello again my friends and welcome to another episode of Megan Study Guide to the NBE. So before I start this episode, this is a very sensitive topic and I understand that quite a few listeners may find this very upsetting. I don't know what setting you find you're currently in, you may not be in the position to want to hear about this episode. A title should kind of tell you, but it's pretty graphic. I've been saying since we started sciences that unfortunately we have to do an infant in bombing episode because for whatever freaking reason, the NBE loves their infant in bombing and nobody warned me. So I don't want you going in going, you know, like to head Scooby style. So I just want to try and help you. I put it off because truthfully it's a it is. It's a sensitive topic and I just don't want anybody getting upset. So with that being said, there is my content warning for this episode, you know, I don't need many of those. So when I say that, I mean it. If you are uncomfortable with this, I am going to be as always posting the Quizlet, acknowledging the creator. If you do not want to listen to this episode, I totally understand, go ahead and just at your convenience when you're ready. Go read the Quizlet. That way you can be prepared because there are plenty on here that I can tell you from experience you'll need to know, okay? So with much love, I really won't take any offense. So with all that being covered, let's go ahead and get started with this episode. Again, I am so sorry for those that this makes uncomfortable, but it is something you will need to know for the NBE because they're going to toss you a couple of infinite bombing questions, okay? So, all right. Any infant weighing less than 5.5 pounds at birth or born prior to the end of the 37th week of gestation is called a premature infant. Now, sure, most of these, like if you have kids, you're probably familiar with, but there's other protocols that you will definitely not be. So, hear me out. All right. Like the next one, sometimes referred to as a preterm or pre-me. That is also a premature infant. A fetus that dies prior to delivery from the uterus is a stillborn infant. Now, here's where it starts to get to our industry, okay? In many states, the definition of a stillborn includes a specific number of weeks of gestation. If that specific period of time has passed, what is required? A death certificate and a burial permit, just like an adult. I have personally had to do that. I was a little surprised. So, can confirm. All right. Weast accepted method of embalming an infant and why? Embalming by his Moses using cotton because it smells that simple. I can't even have to do that. All right. Because of case analysis, embalming by his Moses with cotton, maybe the only method that can be properly applied. Now, the only reason I could see doing that, we had one delivered in a really tiny little body bag and more like a plastic covering. There wasn't a lot to it and our embalmer literally just dumped cavity fluid into the bag because you couldn't do anything else. So, I'm wondering if that's what they're referring to. There was really not much else you could do to preserve that infant and the family did want the baby to go into casket, so we did our best. So, again, case analysis, right? Use your noodle. Do what you think is best. Procedure for embalming by his Moses with cotton. Number one, you will wrap the infant's body in a thick layer of cotton. Number two, you will saturate the cotton in a low to medium index of arterial or cavity fluid. Number three, place wrapped infant in plastic bag and tie off the end. See what I mean about plastic bag. There you go. It's not that uncommon. I know it sounds really morbid until you've worked in a theater of. It's really not uncommon. It keeps them preserved and it works. All right. Procedure. Gosh, I can't talk today. Sorry. Procedure for embalming by immersion. Number one, immerse infant into side, side ex and troker tray that is filled with low to medium index. So, you need to remember. Here we go. You need to remember low medium index. If you, this is what they're going to do. They're going to want to know that you know to use low index fluid on infants. Okay? Almost always low. I don't even know why you use medium, but they're saying it so it be low to medium. Remember this. It is important. I can almost guarantee you will need to know that. All right. So anyway, moving on, right? Sorry. Low to medium index of arterial or cavity fluid. Place wrapped infant in plastic bag and tie off at the end. So I guess they're saying like the the medium or cavity fluid because of what I mentioned earlier where we just like dumped the fluid into the bag. Maybe that's why. But if you're doing the arterial, like a normal embomming, we'll call it that. Then please remember low index. That's from the book. I remember it very the very, very, very, very specifically. All right. Procedure for embomming by osmosis with gels. Number one, apply topical embomming gel on the skin. Number two, remove gel after no less than three to five hours. Will generally not wrinkle the skin like cavity wraps and packs do. Embomming by osmosis with gels. Gels will penetrate approximately three quarters of an inch into the skin. This method can be unreliable and can result in unsatisfactory results. That is embomming by injection into the umbilical arteries. I think they usually do that for like older babies, you know, like so far we've been covering like you put them in a plastic bag, level infant. That is a very small baby. When you get like, you know, I've shared my story before. I was four years old when I lost my two year old sister. She, she to me was a baby. Very small. We were best friends and that's actually what made me want to become a mortician. I found her. She had drowned in her back pond. It was, that is my life long trauma. You know, um, I don't go swimming in still bodies of water. I don't like water. I can't see the bottom of it. It's still, there are still things that stick to me. But what did if when we was the care that the funeral home took, um, the love they showed my mother. My mother was an absolute wreck. She still is. I'm 34. That means that happened there. Oh my god. I happened 30 years ago. So I'm okay. And I turned it into my passion and a fuel in my fire of like why I want to do right by families and make their family goodbye perfect. My mother has not healed. So it's really, I just want to let, you know, like as somebody coming from that background, infant and bombings and children should be so important to you. Please take special, special care of them because their parents and their siblings, their siblings are going to remember them forever. I'm, I do. I remember exactly what she looked like. She looked like an angel. She was beautiful. But I've heard other nightmare stories of oh my gosh, I couldn't believe it or, you know, parents saying that my mother will say my sister looked like an angel. That's what I want. So as a trade-in bomber, like I have told my boss, he said, that's my dream. I want to be that good. I want to make sure that every single family has that experience. So what that I know I'm on my soapbox but I like to share my personal stories with you because I feel like you know it's weird I'm sitting here talking to a microphone and my cat occasionally come in and yell at me but like you're more than that to me you you're more than a microphone you're more than a podcast listener I do you guys as my friends and I just you know this is a very sensitive topic anyway but for me especially because this is literally why I became a funeral director or well I'm sorry a train embalmer and it's very important to me so anyway all right we're gonna move on okay all right and I my my sister was two so I believe she had the arterial injection through your vocal arteries because she was two so I believe that the reason there's a distinction I forgot my train to thought there I believe the distinction is the age if you get a preemie or a very young infant then obviously those other methods will work and as they get older like we're saying like one two years old that other form is gonna be but you're gonna do an arterial in my opinion so all right I came full circle I'm proud of myself I remember my point hey you all right embalming through the aorta can be done two different ways that's the answer two do different ways if you inject for the abdominal aorta you would drain from inferior vein a cava so this is where I'm telling you infant embalming is very it's very different from like adult like you're not gonna be a little guess so I'm gonna repeat that okay because that also is very important if you inject through the abdominal aorta you would drain from the inferior vein a cava wouldn't guess that would just and it's not like adults if you inject from the thoracic aorta you would drain from the what the inferior vein a cava or the right atrium of the heart and I'll repeat that again because these two are very important if you inject from the thoracic aorta you would drain from the what the inferior vein a cava or the right atrium of the heart all right you're ready okay what strength of fluid do you use for infants what are we just for boover you know what Tommy I'm totally listening totally hear you low to mild yay I'm so happy for you I believe in you all right blank fluid works really well on normal infants and this is going to surprise you okay it surprised me because like after I took my exam I was so WTF that I went back and was like uh-uh no no no way but this one was the only one that made sense because everything else was like but I was like there's no way I got that right and you know how it doesn't tell you what you got right it just says sections I was like there's no way so I googled it and it was true anyway John disfluid works really well on normal infant cases surprisingly that's not how they ask it I'm not going to get in trouble I'm just telling you I was baffled by the question I'm not telling you the question John disfluid the fact that that that is applicable is crazy to me so any hoodels Rory Borealis would like to say hi to you and provide some comedic relief in a much needed episode hi babe you doing okay okay say hi I'm sure they love you too don't get a Turkish engorah they talk a lot I love you too and they expect baby talk yeah really and you just gotta let them do it or they like won't stop you have to acknowledge them or they'll just keep going like a child what you come up and I don't you a bed you come up come on all right let's go all right what index would you use in cases with skin slip decompt etc now that is the only time an infant and bombing that you are going to use higher index fluids okay suture with fine ligatures such as and this is the perfect example for use of dental floss remember how I know you've read that and you've probably have yet to see when to use dental floss there you go all right what are the recommended sutures for infants a worm suture or hidden stitches so know your sutures hi baby I have a cat in front of me okay I'm sorry they're distracting and I love my babies take one look at my Facebook you understand all right all right um what can you use to reinforce a positive memory picture for the family use baby lotion baby powder toys etc and as speaking from personal experience when when carry and when when carry and died they asked her they asked my mother for her favorite toys a videotape yes that long ago this was 94 I'm old her favorite videotape or tapes like what movie or movies were extremely important to her if she had a certain dolly a pillow they asked her for whatever effects she felt carry would need or want it was they treated her like she was going to go to sleep and needed her not favorite nap toys it was it will stick with me forever because I put that pink at people my age probably maybe even some younger remember this um you remember those almost raggedy and like we call them low little dollies they were light pink and white plaid dolls that looked like raggedy and have the bonnet and everything she's lolo loops no no that's not it gosh I don't remember but anyway my carry and loved hers I was freaked out by them I don't dolls creep me out but um we had her go with that and of course my mother but did not I never really talked about my my fears and my my freakouts and traumas so my mom didn't know but my mother asked me to place the Lion King movie and I'm I'm just gonna call it raggedy and I know it's not but her her little lollidolly um in the casket and I personally I just wanted to be there for my mother and she was an absolute wreck um my I can't watch Lion King to this day because that was her favorite film we watched all the time and I can't it I'm 34 and I have not watched that film since carry passed away this might be the most cathartic episode I've ever done guys she let you know this is a lot of stuff I haven't talked about in ever um wow so uh I went up to the casket and they had her Lion King pillowcase on her pillow you know how caskets usually have those satin pillowcases my mother like you have to understand carry and loved Lion King I mean I you know how two year olds can be she loved it so it was really special if they did that and um we put the film like the DVD or sorry I'm sorry so used to DVD and all that we put the VHS in its box in her hands for her to hold for like for the procession and then when it was time to close the box we put her dolly there so she could go to sleep with her dolly and it was like one of the I'm sorry it was one of the sweetest things and it was their idea the funeral director did that that wasn't my mother that wasn't my grant I like I have a great great family on that side it wasn't any of them it was the funeral directors that did that and you know what my mother remembers that and every year on my sister's birthday and her death anniversary um she takes out she kept the pillow and they because she said I know this is a weird request and they said nothing's weird your child died this was a Minnesota they were the nicest people on earth like they said man nothing's weird your child just died what can we do direct quote I remember that she said I want her pillow back because it was her actual pillow from her bed and they said okay well it's clean it's it's perfectly safe um let us go put it in a plastic bag for you so it doesn't get ruined and we'll just replace it with with a pillow that came with casket so no big deal and my mother still has it and she she she has this trunk that she keeps and until you me this because as a practicing funeral director or a bomber, I want you to remember this story because this is how deeply this impacts a mother or a father. You never know past. They tell you after care is so important. A lot of people don't seek it out. A lot of people think they're fine. It's been 20 years. It's been 30 years, but it hits them just like yesterday. My sister's death anniversary was like two weeks ago. My mother was unregible for like an entire weekend and everybody agreed to just let her be. She locked herself in a room. She got her baby clothes. It really messes with her. So please, my only thing here is I don't care if it's a preemie, a stillborn, I don't care if it's a one year old, two year old or ten year old. I mean, I had a nine year old little boy who passed away from his his temporary pacemaker running at a battery at a funeral at a theme park. And that one got me. I left I left the prep room in tears because that boy was weeks away from getting his permanent one. Now, I don't know if you're familiar with temporary pacemakers. They charged like an iPod. It's really bizarre. And he I assume because he was nine. I assume he was embarrassed to say, Hey, I forgot to charge it last night or he was just really excited and needed to charge it. Instead of saying, Hey, miss or hey teacher, I need to charge my battery. I don't think he wanted to be an inconvenience and he his heart gave out mid rollercoasters my understanding. That was one of the most heartbreaking. I don't think I haven't counted anything worse than that. But that comes from meeting in the medical field and going into this because in medicine, in medicine, you vow to do no harm and to save lives and all that. And here's this young boy who was on a waiting list because his family didn't have a lot of money. That that was disgusting to me. Again, soapbox, but you never know. That family was absolutely destroyed over that. So that's my other example. Whether they're pre-me, stillborn, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, it doesn't freaking matter. You treat that child like your own sibling. Okay, I want you to believe that person that you are going to remember that for you will remember it for the rest of your life. I promise you that, especially if it's first, but that family that is going to change their lives forever. So I want you to think about that. That's why I want to do this episode. Not only none of that, but like obviously this episode is really important for the NBA. But I really wanted to make sure I hit home with the importance of the reverence of dead with infants and children. Like please, please heed my words. Okay, so let's go ahead and continue on. There's not a whole lot to it. So we're doing okay. What can you use to reinforce a positive, we already did that, sorry, Skip. So I get it. That's what I get for talking. All right, blank clothes can be used to dress a pre-me or stillborn. Fun fact, dog clothes fit. Go to Walmart, buy some dog clothes if the family doesn't. Sometimes the family is so distraught that they literally cannot handle it. You'll get a call from a mother or a sister. You'd be shocked who calls on behalf of the grieving mother or father. What we used to do is we'd literally go once upon a child or Walmart and pick up clothes for that. Like we'd look at the child and go like measure or just you know, my boss knew just by looking at her because she'd done so many. So anyway, I didn't use dog clothes. I went to once upon a child. That was my place to go to. All right, a child from birth to 18 months is considered what? That is an infant. So a year and a half. 18 to 48 months is considered a what? That is a toddler. Okay. All right, influence of age on and bombing. Number one, positioning difficulties. Number two, setting the features. Number three, the sites for injection and drainage. They change based on their age. Number four, and this is also where I keep emphasizing strength, value of the bombing solution, and the injection pressure and rate of flow. I say this logically because you need to know that last one's so bad. I cannot, I can't say more. Please remember that out of all of this strength, value of the bombing solution, and injection pressure, and the rate of flow. If you leave with nothing else, leave with that. Easy point. All right, infant to child, birth to age four. Child to young adult, four to 12. Young adult to adult, age 12 to mid 70s, old age 70s to late 90s. All right, now we're moving into. Okay, no, we're good. All right. Everybody must be individually judged in making a pre-embombing analysis. No, duh. Right. Okay. We have to say it. All right, the infant body usually contains a larger amount of what? Moisture. Believe it or not, they usually hold more water. I mean, I guess if you hold a baby, you could probably tell. I mean, those of you who have held an infant, you're like, oh yeah, definitely. But if you haven't, you can tell. All right, an infant weight is 75% water. An infant's body is only 12, but well, not only is 12% fat. Infant skin is much more delicate than adult skin. I mean, that's an easy point anyway, but regardless, infant and children bodies can include one, an autopsy, two, an autopsy, three, organ donor, four, and delayed embombing, five, restorative art practices, and six, fetuses, or preemie or stillborn. All right, because so yes, they do do autopsy on babies because if they suspect any kind of abuse and neglect, you don't want to know. I'm not going to get into it. I've seen it. I've been in the room. I've helped just your better off my sweet sweet summer child not knowing what a child in infant embombing. Sorry, infant autopsy is like unless you have to see one and suture one. Okay, we're not going to talk about it. I've already gone enough. I've already talked about enough morbid stuff. After embombing the eyelids, they may be glued. What mouth closure procedure is not possible in infant embombing? Do you know this one? My favorite tool, the needle injector because they don't have the teeth to hold that sucker in place. Their gums are soft, ink and anchor. All right, and yes, I said, "Aint I am in I'm in South Carolina and the murder will be it, you're going to give me a break." Before embombing, remove any tubes in mouth or nose and any trache tube. So like if that baby was in ICU or in the hospital, you need to remove before embombing those devices. Now in contrast, after the embombing, you're going to remove any intravenous tubes or any invasive connections to the arterial or veinous system. All right, positioning of arms and head vary. You're going to place the head because a standard head block is designed for an adult, right? So very high up considering, think about how tiny a baby is. Okay, so when you need to place the head on something, which is always, you're going to place a child's head on a towel or even cotton if it's small enough. Like you can roll the towel into a roll and it will keep the head up high enough. Hands hand-class, hands can class a, toy or stuffed animal. Just like what I told you about my sibling, this is very common practice in funerals. Family effects, children have a favorite toy. It's very common. I'm sure that if you have a child, your child probably cared around the same toy forever. I know I did. My mom was a blankie. My sister had her dolly, lollie dolly. That's what it was called, lollie dolly. Oh, there we go. Okay, I'm sorry. Got overwhelmed with nostalgia and sadness. All right, vessels of choice. Number one being right common carotid artery. Number two being the femoral artery. And number three, the abdominal aorta. Now here's an interesting one and you might see it. Where are you going to it? I worded that poorly. You are going to inject the legs first. Believe it or not. Treatments of areas not reached by arterial injection include number one Hypodermic injection number two internal compress number three Preserve it of gels and number four external compresses Post embombing now this is Just like kind of any other post embombing, you know bottom and read anyway. You're gonna wash the body and hair You're gonna seal any incisions You're gonna treat any skin slip with any packs needed You are gonna use liquid latex if needed and Use three M patches if needed all right You can use cotton on top of a thoracic post Many children age four to twelve are autopsy because it is weird that a four to twelve year It was like drop dead right? All right injection site for children age four to twelve is Gonna be the common carotid and the femoral so now we're getting to More adult techniques. It's really just when they're babies that it's very different All right injection through femoral already artery permits open clothing and best control over fluid I don't know why you'd have to their clothing. I'm not gonna ask fluid strength for children age four to twelve This is important 18 to 25 index Children have again delicate skin easy easy point All right another I'm gonna send this home again. This is so freaking important guys Children require a smaller volume Okay Another one children in four children inject Slowly, okay, do not rush that you do it slowly, okay That is the answer they want a Factor that must always be considered and the pre-embombing analysis is the age The hands and head of infants are positioned differently than adults At approximately one year of age the body water declines to the normal adult level of 60% At six months the total body fat is 25% so I'm a little over double At age one body fat is now 30% When in bombing infants it is suggested that the embomber not use any pre injection Removal of only one organ is organ examination I don't we're not doing that as Embombers that that's a pathology thing like autopsy but okay All right examination of only one of only the cranial thoracic abdominal cavity and spider lips Okay, yeah partial autopsy so yeah, we're getting into the autopsy so I was like what what why do we need? I was confused because they didn't say anything about autopsies all right almost done okay cranial cranial thoracic and abdominal cavities spinal autopsy limbs examine now that's why I didn't want to say anything To check for any signs of abuse they examine the limbs. I'm not gonna say anything else For those of you who don't know I don't want to run you day But we're talking like the their little the legs and the arms need to be checked for internal bruising Okay, and broke like it doesn't matter. That's called a complete infant autopsy like they don't say infant, but that's a complete autopsy An infant troker is 12 inches in length and they also use that for other things But they might ask you how long an infant troker is So all right the diameter of an infant troker is one fourth of an inch After cavity treatment it is suggested to Reass for eight several hours later as a boss of mine like to say you let them cook And it actually I mean it holds true because I mean It you did you let the body sit overnight Typically and let that fluid sit Reass we would we would not aspirate until the following morning unless it was like oh my gosh We need to have this funeral tonight But it really did make a difference and the body did look better when you quote unquote let them cook So anyway, all right that will wrap up this Quizlet the title I apologize.
