I Think We're UNDERreacting | Reading Reddit Stories

Smoshreads hosts Shane, Trevor, and Jared discuss whether people are overreacting in real-life situations, ultimately concluding that most scenarios involve under-reacting rather than over-reacting. A central story involves a friend who is engaged to someone who publicly mocks the fiancé in a Reddit post—friends are encouraged to share the content to protect the friend’s future, despite potential backlash. Another story involves a coworker who repeatedly requests breakfast with growing entitlement, especially before the employee has even left home, raising concerns about boundaries and respect. A third story shows an 18-year-old employee feeling uncomfortable being treated as a guest in her father’s lake house, particularly after a dismissive comment about her mother, which feels like a breach of trust. The most intense story centers on a couple arguing over naming their daughter after a deceased best friend—the husband had kept the relationship secret and engaged in emotional manipulation, leading the wife to confront him and ultimately leave, citing betrayal and dishonesty. The discussion underscores the importance of transparency, boundaries, and emotional honesty in relationships. The hosts emphasize that while some situations may feel painful, speaking up is a moral obligation to protect one’s well-being and relationships. Ultimately, the stories highlight how unaddressed emotional or boundary issues can escalate, making it essential to assert one’s limits and seek truth, even when it’s difficult.

Hello, and welcome to Smoshreads Reddit Stories. I'm Shane and today's theme is over-reacting stories where people are maybe over-reacting. Maybe they're not. I'm joined by two people who I can barely get a reaction out of ever. Trevor and Jared. Yeah, I never over-react. I'm pretty mad, I'm probably under-react. I'm really nonchalant these days. Okay. Yeah, I'm really chill, especially in traffic. I don't start doing voices. Yeah, you don't, you don't. Yeah. Do you think you guys are overreactors? Yeah. Yeah. We are performers. And you're like performers and chefs. Yeah. I feel like that's, oh my god, chefs, that seems like your whole thing. I don't know. I think probably, yeah, I mean, when we're doing videos, I'm probably over-reacting to stuff more often than not. But I think in my normal everyday life, I feel like I'm pretty like level-headed and chill. Yeah, there are things, though, that'll get me. Honestly, in traffic, I'll get cut off by someone and it's like, maybe not even that bad. I don't know. I think that you should, I think that you should be put away. Yeah. I think that you should be put away. Maybe you should die. For sure. I do think I under-react a lot in my regular life. Oh, interesting. I do. I do. I think I'm someone who I can let people walk all over me sometimes. I think I've allowed that in the past. Good to know. Because it's like, it's like a path of least resistance sometimes. Yeah. So then luckily, with friends and my wife and even family, they'll be like, you should react more to that. Yeah. Okay. All right. I'll react a little bit. Totally. But we're going to be reading mostly stories from the subreddit, am I over-reacting? And I feel like most of the stories, they're not over-reacting. In fact, a lot of times I think they're very much under-reacting, depending though. So we'll see. Let's dive in. I'm ready. Okay. First story comes from Am I over-reacting. And it was posted only two days ago as of reading this. Whoa. My friend just got engaged, but I found a reddit post from his fiance, "trashing the ring and insulting him." Do I tell him or am I over-reacting? For context, most of us have had concerns about his fiance for a while. We don't feel like she has his best interests at heart, and the relationship has seemed unhealthy from the outside. Our friend also seems like he's been struggling mentally, and some of us feel like she has become very controlling, including around things like what he eats and other day-to-day choices, even though she frames it as being for his health. A few days ago, he proposed and gave her a really beautiful, very distinctive engagement ring. She publicly posted excited engagement content on social media so everything looked great on the surface. Then, by random chance, our friend came across a post on Reddit in an engagement ring community. They recognized the ring immediately because it's extremely unique, and there were other identifying details that matched as well. She does very unique, hyper-detailed nail art. We couldn't believe she would post the picture with her nails in the photo at all given how unique they are. In the post, she was criticizing the ring pretty harshly, and saying some really disrespectful things about her fiance. She was mocking his taste, calling him incompetent, and making comments that made it sound like her issue might not actually be the ring at all, but the relationship itself. A lot of replies were basically saying the same thing, that her reaction sounded deeper than just disappointment over jewelry, and more like resentment toward the person she's marrying. Now, we feel stuck. On one hand, if one of us were about to marry someone who is speaking about us that way anonymously online, we'd want to know. On the other hand, we also worry about interfering in something that may not be our place, especially since bringing it up could seriously damage the friendship or create a huge blow-up. So the dilemma is, do we tell our friend what we found, or would that be overreacting, do we stay out of it and let him figure it out on his own. I don't know if I would live this advice, but you have to show him. She posted this on a public forum. This is for the public. It's crazy. To me, this isn't some secret anymore. Made it not a secret. You're allowed to show him. It would feel differently if it was a private conversation where she voiced some of these things, and it's like, "Oh, do I tell him?" But yeah, if she's posting online about it and you know 100%, you have to tell him. That's just so disrespectful. Yeah, and what is the tough reality? Because I think everyone can relate to some degree is, he may not be on your side. You might show him and he might defend his fiancee. You can do a show. You can just go ahead and show him. I'm telling you a thing, and it's up to you now, but you should clue him in. Imagine all your friends pass this around and then went to your wedding. Oh, you can't come across being worse. You can't come across the Reddit post, show it to other friends and then not show it to you. This is two days ago. Keep that in mind. Because now things can still be made right. But I agree with what you're saying, because now that you spread it around the friend group, now it's almost a betrayal as a friend that you're all talking about this and not including it. It's like, you got to just clue him in. I think however painful, the risk of however painful, it might be outweighs the risk of, I don't know, something far worse. The resentment continuing to build them getting married. Yeah. Way more difficult down the line. Yeah, you're not interfering because she posted it. She posted it. Yeah, it'd be the same if it was a private conversation if the fiance came and showed you the ring and was like, I think this is disgusting. Honestly, I fucking hate him. It's like, well, you're putting me in this situation now, so I can talk to him. Yeah. You got to, I mean, I wonder how awful she must be. Yeah. This sounds really bad. It sounds pretty rough. She's doing that. Yeah, and if she's already, because I said, we already have had issues with her or feelings, negative feelings about her, I mean, this just seems like if it's in a series of disrespectful things that she's doing, like, you have to talent. Okay, so OP is active in these comments underneath this post. The verdict is not overreacting, obviously. Someone said, send the link to your friend, not overreacting. You're looking out for their best interests, and it's not easy to say off your own back, but the evidence like the link they can make a clear decision without fall out back on you. That's an awful message to receive, a link that's going to ruin your future. I think you need to send the link and be like, hey, man, you need to print it out. I can't, you need to take them to lunch. Yeah, to pay for that lunch, and you need to hand them a print out. You can't send the link. Yeah. Well, because I'm going to open it at the bank. They're going to open it. You know what I mean? Like, you can't, you need to be sat down and you cannot spend them a link. I have to pay charges for what? Hold on, get a good text. Yeah. What? Reading it in traffic, like your seconds. Yeah. Oh my god. Oh my god. I agree with the title. Now, I'm overreacting. I would say to this person, you need to screenshot that red oppose before she deletes it. You need to be on top of that. Yeah, that's true. Okay, OP responded to that comment saying she deleted the post, unfortunately. Wow. Come on. Come on. I'm a veteran at this shit. You need to screenshot it. Screenshot it immediately. She deleted the post unfortunately. We took screenshots of everything so we could show him. Okay. I'm surprised by the number of not overreacting. I don't think we are overreacting, but everyone is very torn on whether to approach him with this. It feels more like a moral dilemma to us. On the one hand, we don't want to hurt our friend based on a post someone made in the heat of the moment. On the other hand, what she said not only in the post, but some of the comments was pretty brutal and we feel like he should know. Someone said, if you do tell him, be prepared for him to shoot the messenger. That is a harsh reality of this stuff. I feel like it's true. Everyone knows when someone starts dating someone and they're wrapped up and you're being manipulated, but you're all in on them. It's so like, but it seems like with how severe this situation is, it feels like even if there is that moment in the beginning of him being upset, surely he'll come back around. Once he realizes it's like, you had my best interest or heart. I think it's one of those things where it's like, you need to be a good friend even if it's almost like that is the true test of being a good friend, like doing the right thing even if they're going to be mad at you. I think if your friend is mad at you for that, you need a new friend. It's on them. It's like, give them a chance to come around to wake up, but if time goes by and they don't. I remember I was in a relationship, this was forever ago. A friend of mine, while I was in the relationship, and wrapped up in it, a friend of mine was like, hey, I don't like how you are with her. I don't think she's a good influence of kind of stuff. I remember at the time being like, no, I think it's actually good. No, I defended it. Then after I was single again, I was like, hey, thank you for that. That did deep down help at a certain point. Even if I wasn't like super receptive in the moment. Yeah. Okay, so OP responded to the shoot your messenger comment and said, okay, yes, this is exactly what we were worried about. He has seen past all the red flags at this point and ignored things that I personally would have sprinted as fast as I could in the opposite direction. Wow. Who's to say that us coming to him with this is going to change his mind at all? We are worried he will double down and tell us to go fuck ourselves. And he might. Yeah, but I still think you should do. And then also imagine you can't go to the wedding. I don't think if you tell him you can go. You want to go to this wedding with her? Yeah. I'm so curious what, like, some of the other things that she has done have been, like, I'd love more content for this. I'd also love to see the ring. I do want to see it. Yeah. Lastly, someone said, "Not overreacting, tell your friend, that way he can make an informed decision on whether or not to continue the relationship. If I were you, I'd screenshot the whole post or screen recorded in case she takes it down so you have hard proof. I am a woman, and if I were disappointed in either the relationship or the ring, I'd go straight to my partner with my grievances, not the internet. She sounds incredibly immature. The last thing you want is for your friend to suffer unnecessarily in his life, because his friends were afraid of overreacting to a serious situation. I hope he responded. I agree. Thank you for your point about going to the internet, hearing it said that way really does highlight the degree of immaturity. That's where it ends. We don't have an update or anything, because it's so recent. Yeah. By the time this airs, that'll be updates and everything, so we might eventually get back to it. Hopefully they make the right call. Yeah. I don't know. If you post something, you kind of have to expect, or at least prepare for the worst. Yeah. And that's what's good. Yeah. Have you ever sub-tweeted anybody and you got back? No. I'm not like. I have sub. They figured it out. Like yeah. And also, I sub-tweeted in the moment. That's when I learned, if you're going to do it, just wait six days and then do it. Like get enough distance between plausible teniability, but I was just fully in the audience at an improv show, just like, "Oh, that's really good." Oh, I'm not good at that. I can't do that, because I think that I'm too anxious of a person, that I'm like they're going to know. Yeah. So, I either have to be direct or I have to fully let it go. Yeah, yeah. It's one of the other for me. Don't wait. This is a tough situation. Yeah. It's really hard. I hope that despite, I don't know, him looking past all the red flags, I would hope that. Because an engagement is a really big thing, I mean, so maybe it would be significant enough that he'd be like, "Oh, this is maybe a serious situation. She's being really awful about this thing that I really put a lot of thought and care into. Maybe it could be the final straw or the thing that opens his eyes." And I'm like, "Yeah, I think you have to take that chance." As a friend, you have to let him know. Yeah. I mean, you're going to carry that guilt if you end up just saying nothing, they do get married and then something blows up way bigger in the future. It's like, maybe if we just told him about this, he could have figured it out sooner. Oh, gosh, I can tell it's not that they're like, "Oh, I don't want to interfere. They're so certain that it's not going to affect him, which is tough, but I still think you should do it." Yeah. And also, I think if you have the screenshot of the post, you know where to find me. That Jared handled this for you. I do want to see the ring. Yeah. Yeah, I'll tell him. You want me to come in from a stranger? I'll let him know. It's like, "Oh, the ring, he went to Jared's." It's like, "Oh, and the breakup, he went to Jared's." Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. You can have five. Yeah. Yeah. All right. Let's move on to our next story. This one comes from "Am I overreacting?" This was also posted like a week ago. Whoa. She was directing this episode. She got these fresh. Yeah. Great work. Yeah. It's nice when, because sometimes I'm like, dang, what was I up to six years ago? What was my life? Like, but now it's like, I kind of know what I was up to a week ago. I know who I am. Right now. I know who I am. Yeah. Okay. "Am I overreacting by refusing to keep picking up breakfast for my coworker?" I, an eight-year-old girl, work in an office with about 15 other people. There's a cafe along the way to work that I usually grab a coffee and something to eat on the way to work a few times a week. One of my coworkers, Mark, not his real name, obviously, found out about the cafe a few months ago when he asked where I got my food from. He then told me he had been wanting to try them, but it was completely out of the way from his normal commute. A few days later, I was heading into work and he messaged me asking if I could pick him up one of those bacon and egg rolls. I was already going to stop there, so I said, sure. He paid me back when I got to work, and that was it. A week or so later, he asked again, same thing, and I was already planning on stopping there, so I didn't mind. After that, it started becoming a regular thing. Maybe once or twice a week, he would ask if I was stopping at the cafe and if I could grab him something. I never really thought much about it as it was literally on my way in and he always paid me back. Although, this then led to him asking for specifics. For example, the bacon and egg roll, but only if they were fresh. Otherwise, he would want the sausage muffin instead, as well as sometimes wanting a cinnamon bun also. Still, I didn't really mind as it wasn't any more effort for me. However, the first thing that started to annoy me was when he started messaging me before I had to even left my flat. I'd wake up to messages such as, "I'd wake up to messages such as, morning, bacon egg roll please." No! No! No! The questions are asking if I was even planning to stop in, just putting his order in. Even so, I still would use them. She's not maternity leave. She doesn't work there anymore. Hey, where are you? Even so, I would still usually just reply, "Yes." Then one morning, I wasn't actually going to stop at the cafe because I was already running late. I responded to his message and told him I wasn't able to. He then responded, saying something along the lines of asking if I could just still swing by and in return, he'd send me a bit extra for the trouble. I said no because I was already running late and obviously didn't want to get in more trouble walking into the office with breakfast in hand. He seemed a bit annoyed but dropped it. Although after this, I started noticing that he would stop asking whether I was going to cafe and instead just assumed I was. This then led to me getting further messages such as, "Two bacon egg rolls please," or, "Cinnamon bun, thanks." Now, last week, I had a pretty rough morning and didn't stop at the bakery. I again got to work late, went to my desk straight away and after about 15 minutes, Mark came over and asked where his breakfast was. I said I hadn't gone to the cafe this morning. He looked confused and said something like, "Oh, I thought you were still getting mine." I told him I hadn't as I didn't stop and he responded with the fact I normally do so, he just assumed. I told him I had never actually agreed to get it every morning and that I was only doing it because I happened to stop there a few times a week. He then said it wasn't a big deal and that I was making it into one because it literally takes no extra time. Oh my god. This brushed me the wrong way but I said I don't mind doing it occasionally when I'm stopping there but I don't want to be responsible for buying him breakfast. Our conversation ended with him roughly saying not to worry about it. Anyway, later that day, another one of my co-workers said that Mark thought I had gotten really weird about the whole breakfast thing. Apparently, he told them that I had offered to pick things up for him and that now I'm acting like I'm doing him a massive favor. I told this other co-worker that I never offered to do it as some ongoing thing. I just said yes to his messages when I was able to and had planned on stopping there. They said that they could see both sides and that if I was already gone there, it seemed pretty harmless, which I do understand. It's not like he's asking me to drive across town or anything but at the same time I feel like there's a difference between doing someone a favor occasionally and being their breakfast delivery driver. Maybe I should have said something earlier instead of going along with it but I didn't think it would escalate at the time. Am I overreacting by refusing to keep picking up breakfast for my co-worker when I don't have any intention of stopping there myself? That's dude. Not at all. This is funny. It's like I am. It's crazy. I am. Also, why can't he get his own breakfast? I know. It's like there's got to be other breakfast spots, man. Or just go to that? Go there. He says it's out of his way but it's like, all right, I don't know, I need some, sorry. This is her journey to work. She gets to decide what she does with it. No. This feels just like a classic case of like, oh, woman doing something nice and then he is just like so self-centered in his own world that like in his mind, he's like, oh yeah, she offered to get me something and like, it's crazy that she's like acting like it's some big deal. Yeah. Yeah. Oh my god. To be like bacon egg roll, please. That's crazy. I'm like, hey, I'd be like, that's where it ends for me. That's so cool. You got too comfortable. Yeah. No. No. If he was like, hey, if you happen to be stopping in like, I'd love like a bacon egg roll. But like him being like, oh, can you like check and see like if they're fresh, but if they're not fresh, then I'll do this thing and like actually can yeah, it's weird. Yeah. I don't know. That entitlement only grows. Yeah. Yeah. If he was just kinder about it too. Like, I think if he was just a nice person and like was like thoughtful and was like, hey, like, I'd be super like appreciative if you could like check and see if the bacon egg rolls fresh or whatever. I don't know. Yeah, but where it really became egregious was when she's like, yeah, I didn't stop there because I didn't, I didn't go there. Mm-hmm. And he's like, you didn't stop there for me. Yeah. Hey man. I'm hungry now. It's like, I don't know man. Figure it out. I would hate you have to work with that guy. Yeah. Crescent and the back of anyone. in the office would be on his side even a little bit. >> I know, I don't feel like, this is tough, it's at the same time it is your job now to feed this man. And it is so clearly a case of him telling the story completely wrong for them to be like, well I see both sides, as if him teaming it up that, well yeah, she offered to get me breakfast. She never offered that. You just started asking her, she's a nice person. If you give him out a cookie, so how much do we think OP's age and gender is playing a role in Mark expecting her to keep getting his breakfast? Because she's 18, she's an 18 year old. >> All right. >> Yeah. >> I would feel bad. I'd be like, hey, you're probably one of the youngest people here, I'm like that's giving you a hard time. She's not your intern, dude. And we don't know Mark's age, okay, okay, hold on. This is huge. >> It's Mark Cuban. When I was telling the story, I was assuming that I was like they've got to be somewhat similar in age. That's, my brain just went there, I assumed like he was like 22. >> I was picturing like a 24 or 25 year old, yeah. >> From the comments, we know that Mark is late 30s pushing 40. >> Oh god. >> Obviously, OP is 18. >> I want to throw up. >> I'd just be like, hey, that's your daughter. >> Yeah, like I would feel guilty asking that of any of the super young people who work here at Smosh. I'd be like, man, you're crazy. >> Yeah, definitely don't ask me for anything like that. >> I'm too young. >> And I haven't. >> Yeah. >> That's just weird, man, it's also, I don't know, I guess it's just me that I'm like that he's texting her, being like breakfast role, I'm like, I'm like having a number, dude. >> Yeah, late 30s guy, just texting an 18-year-old, maybe it's on Slack or some sort of thing. But even then, I'm just like, this is weird. >> Yeah. >> I think she could even, if they have an HR, I think that's like an HR thing, you could go and be like, he's getting mad at me if I don't pick up his breakfast. >> Yeah, yeah. >> Yeah. >> No, it's just like an entitled oblivious older man who just feels like people should cater to him. >> Who are these people in the office who are like, I don't know, though, you should get this 40-year-old man as breakfast. >> Yeah. >> It's also clearly, it has to be like an issue of like seniority too, you know. If you're that much older, I have to believe you have a higher position. >> She feels pressured to be doing this. >> 100%. >> Yeah. >> Comments, you're not overreacting at all. A small gesture turns into something else quite quickly. And you're young, so he's using that as an advantage, taking the piss and going to co-workers and talking about you. You're not a delivery person. It was a gesture of goodwill. Now he's putting orders in before you're even out of bed. >> Oh, he said thank you, genuinely wasn't sure if I was losing my sanity over nothing. I tried doing a nice thing, but I let it get out of control. I'm trying to be accountable, but I really didn't expect it to go so sour. This is like, she's 18, so this has to be like, this is her first job very quickly. It's just like, dude, so she, she's operating on, I don't know how a lot of this probably works. >> Oh, totally. I threw a phone in my head and I was like, that's work, and that's how things are. >> That's how things are. >> My first job ever. >> Really? >> Yeah, yeah. >> Someone threw a phone at your head? Get the wall behind me. >> That's crazy. >> What kind of phone? >> It was like a landline. >> Oh, it's like phone. >> It's hefty. >> Yeah. >> Not that it matters. >> Yeah. >> There's a phone and they threw it at you. They missed. >> They missed, yeah. >> They tried to hit you. >> Maybe they had great accuracy and they wanted to scare you. >> They threw it in my head and they hit the wall behind me and I kept going to work. >> Yeah. >> Holy fuck, were they your boss? >> They were. >> That's crazy. >> Yeah. >> Holy fuck. >> Okay. >> I literally did thing. Obviously, that's not a good thing that happened today, but I was like, yeah, these things happen, I guess. >> Yeah. >> You gotta go get them lunch every day. >> That show business. >> Yeah. >> No, and she's 18 years old, getting up early in the morning, getting ready, giving herself enough time to stop at a cafe. You're a grown-ass man. Get up 10, 15 minutes earlier. >> Yeah. >> I am truly scared of people with this level of entitlement because plenty of times here, people will be going out and be like, we're heading to Costco, getting some Costco hot dogs. And I'll be like, could you please? >> Yeah. >> Please get me a Costco hot dog. >> I'm sorry. >> Yeah. >> I'm sorry to ask. >> Yeah. >> I will owe you my life for ever. >> Please, it's a buck 50 and I'm like, I will give you everything. >> Yeah. >> I got a $100 bill. >> Someone said, not overreacting, you don't have to pick up his breakfast for him, especially when you weren't going to stop there yourself. You were doing him a favor and it was very nice of you, whether you choose to stop or not as completely your choice and you wouldn't be in the wrong. Him expecting it is a problem and I personally would tell him that I wouldn't be doing it anymore to save myself the headache. Oh, if he responded, yeah, I'm with you. I wouldn't have minded so much if he reacted better to why I couldn't always be doing it. However, even if we made up, I won't be taking that risk again. Lastly, someone said, honestly, you need to just say no and not allow it to become a habit. It's not rude or an overreaction if you just say, no, I don't have time or no, I can't do it. You don't need an excuse or reason. O.P. responded, thank you for the input. I definitely let it go on too long. I've always found it hard to say no, but I figured he would have been more understanding with my reasoning on why I can't always be expected to provide him breakfast. >> This is embarrassing for this old man. >> Yeah. It sucks, too, because he's still in a weird position where clearly if she does say, hey, I'm sorry, I'm not going to do that anymore, he's just going to overreact again and be like, oh, why not? You're already stopping there. Why are you being so weird about it? It's no matter what she's now in this, he's just put her in a really uncomfortable position as an 18-year-old woman in an office, and he's pushing 40. >> He's like, bro, the father. >> Dude, start making overnight oats or something. >> Figure out oats by a bunch of bananas at this store, bro. >> Sorry, women, we eat yogurt. >> We don't want to, but we hate it, but we do it. >> I had a job where a coworker of mine would occasionally get me lunch, and I one time they put it in the fridge, and then I got to it, and probably within maybe an hour, and then it was just kind of cold and hard, which you didn't put in the fridge, but I get why you did. So then the next time that I was essentially ordering lunch from my friend, I was like, I added like, and don't feel like you have to put it in the fridge, I love you so little but I felt really insecure, with that little directive, and I had to put a hundred emojis in it. I couldn't. >> One of those spam posts that's just like, clearly so passive aggressive, I just said it normal, it would have probably felt better, but like even just having one explicit direction for a coworker for my lunch, I'm like, that's where I draw the line, I can't imagine, that's so embarrassing. >> Yeah, no, I can't fathom. >> I can't even like, like you said, I feel weird asking, even though I know everyone that I work with is incredibly kind, and if I was like, hey, would you be willing to get me a sandwich, no problem, I still am like, unless they offer, and even when they offer I'm still like, no, it's okay, I'm good, like I can't imagine. >> The expectation though is great, because like I love like, it feels nice when you like order like, oh, I'm getting coffee, does anybody want anything, like it feels really nice, but there's something about the expectation then feels like such an insult. >> Yeah, I'm shooting off a breakfast order, it's actually funny, it's really kind of iconic. >> He's kind of a diva, yeah, no, God, if I worked in that office and I heard this guy like complain about this, I'd be like, you're embarrassing, you don't feel embarrassed right now. >> You need so much help, yeah, clearly, can't make breakfast. >> You need a lot more than a bacon egg roll, unless you were like so tight with someone that like you were like breakfast egg roll, like that was my boy, and he was like, I'm not stopping at the cafe and would be like, fuck you, like you're that close with someone and you have that rapport, but they do not, all right, next story. This comes from am I overreacting, also, fresh off the press. Am I overreacting to my dad's girlfriend, treating me like a guest in his house the first time meeting her. Dad's girlfriend is treating OP like a guest in his own house the first time meeting her. >> Okay. >> Oh my God. >> This feels like 90s, 90s- >> It feels like it's childish maybe, yeah, yeah. >> Okay, I'm in my early 30s. My parents just separated a few years ago and my dad retired and moved to a lake house a few hours away that's been in our family since he was a kid. He inherited it and so I spent almost every weekend growing up there with him and my mom. Now he lives there full time and has been seeing a woman from the town for quite a while. I just met her for the first time when I went up to visit this weekend and she was nice, but she very much treated me like I was a guest in a house I've been going to since I was a baby. I know her intentions were good and she was trying to be hospitable, but there were times when it became too much. Didn't want me cleaning up after myself, told me to help myself to stuff there, telling me where things are. It started to make me feel a little weird. At one point my dad said she's not a guest here, this is her house, and looked at me and smiled, because my sister and I are going to be inheriting it from him. He told me recently he's planning on putting the house in me and my sister's name, and he's also told me numerous times he's not ever letting his girlfriend move in with him. So I'm not necessarily concerned, but now that I've spent a weekend with her, I don't want to have to feel like I'm being seen. and as a guest every time I go to visit, when she's technically the new person in the dynamic. She also made a comment about my mom right in front of me, and I think she realized she messed up right after it came out of her mouth, LOL. - Well, all right. - Yeah, I'm mad, I got it. - Yeah, you can't just say that. Give us the comment. - I'm mad. - I think we got it. - Oh, we got it. - Okay, we have it in the comments. Let's go see what it is, okay. All right, what did she say about your mother? O.P. responded, "My dad had a procedure done years ago "and since he wasn't gonna be able to work for a few weeks, "he asked my mom to drive him to the lake house "and leave him there so he could recover in his happy place." The girlfriend said, "And your wife dropped you off here "and left you here for weeks without a car. "Like my mom had abandoned him "when it was something he asked her to do." Right after she made the comment, my dad said, "Because that's what I asked her to do." And she said back, "Well, that was just what I heard." Because he's known a lot of people in town for a long time for going there so often. - Okay, that's just what I heard. - I'd love to know the age gap difference between dad and girlfriend. - 'Cause I feel like historically speaking in Reddit stories where we have a divorced, dad girlfriend dynamic, it's oftentimes the new girlfriend is younger. And I don't know what, I wanna know the age difference between them and then girlfriend and daughter. Like a girlfriend and O.P. - I would assume if it was notable, the O.P. would have put that in there. - Yeah. - Okay, and also there's some more context. You know, the parents are separated. They're not fully divorced yet. - Okay, okay. - So it's, this is very fresh and like, yeah, not fully clean separation. And this lake house, you know, they're going to inherit it. It's been in the family for generations. So you can only assume there's, there's family portraits everywhere. There's pictures like. This is very clearly like their house that they're, so her being like, make yourselves at home is an insult. - Yeah. - Like, you're like, hey, fuck you. - She's probably nervous. That's, if I'm like gonna try to defend her, that's where my life goes. - As the kids, this is a weird dynamic. Like, she's in this home. Like, maybe you could be like, this lady's nervous. - Yeah, she probably. - But you got like, definitely the, like she should apologize for making any comment about the mom. Like, you say something like that. It's like, what do you think this is gonna read as? - Yeah. - Come on, man. You're freshly new in this lake. - You're too new. - Yeah. - And then the dad even defending the mom immediately. - Yeah, I like to give the girlfriend the benefit of the doubt. I can totally understand wanting to make someone feel welcome. Like, yeah, hospitality and being like, hey, if you need anything, well, a lot. Like, if she doesn't fully understand the dynamic, but as soon as there's a thing about her making a comment about her mom, I'm like, oh, that's icky. Like, oh, there is, like, she's not. I don't know. - It reads a little bit like, oh, I've moved in. - Yeah, I know, I'm in charge. - Yeah, it's okay, you're not. - You're the guest here. So I could see that. I mean, I never experienced this type of situation, but I could imagine. - I know, I was just thinking I'm so glad my parents are together. - Yeah, which is unrelatable, maybe. Yeah, I'm sorry. - I think it is, my parents are together and I'm grateful. - All I can be is grateful. - Yeah, it's true. - Yeah, yeah, comments on this. Someone said, not overreacting. Clearly your dad noticed, too, and thought it was weird enough to say something, and it is weird, LOL. It's not a massive deal. It just doesn't look good on her. Oh, he said, no, it's not a big deal. If that's her biggest flaw, then I'm okay with her, LOL. Just reflecting after spending two days with her for the first time. Someone said, I don't know. That seems a little territorial to me. Your dad had to tell her that he had this house for years, and you had been there many times as a kid. When somebody makes you feel like a guest in a place that technically was yours first, they're peeing on it like a dog or cat to show ownership. I don't think it's as innocent as it may have been intended to look. Oh, he said, there's also photos of me all over the house growing up there. It's not a secret that I spent a lot of time there. Also, until this weekend, every time that I've been up to visit him, since he started dating her, she was never allowed to come. Long story short, I told him I wouldn't meet her until he respected a certain boundary regarding my mom. And so it took a long time for us to meet because he's been avoiding telling my mom about the relationship, basically. - No, it's good. - It's catchy. We have a small little update. I spoke with my dad about it today and told him, I thought she was nice and I had a great weekend, but felt a little weird being treated like a guest in his home. He said, I made it very clear to her that it's my house and said her hospitality is probably a result of her working in the restaurant business for a long time. - 'Cause you're a waitress. - Yeah. - 'Cause when I walk into all of Garden, they go, hey, please make yourself at home. Anything you need. - Make a heart. - Any, we got it. - Hey, welcome to All of Me Garden. I'm your new mommy. - I'm your mom now, yeah. - She walks up to the lake house and the girlfriend goes, hey, when you're here, you're family, yeah. - It is, it is actually true. When you walk into chilies, they say, hey, welcome to chilies, I'm gonna fuck your dad. And I don't know why they do that, but now they sense it. - Yeah, so, yeah. They get it. All right. That's a good, good classic one. That's a parent trap. - I want to see the photos. I want to see the house. I feel like these people are all rich and hot. - Probably. - Like the dad's getting a divorce. - Oh, Lake House. - He's got a girlfriend or anything. - Oh, Lake House, like she's a little like spicy in the house. Like, I want to see pictures. - Yeah. If she acts up anymore though, they just, while she's asleep, they put her on a mattress and just push her out into the lake. - Yeah, it's a great story. - It's great, it's a great story. This next story comes from about a month ago. - It's from me. - Oh, yeah. - And this is written by Jared. - This is me. - Okay, am I overreacting for refusing to let my husband name our daughter after his best friend? Best friend in quotes. - Okay. - I, a 29 year old woman, gave birth to our daughter three days ago and somehow we're still arguing about her name. I'm writing this while she's asleep because I can't sleep anyway and I honestly don't even know if I'm overreacting anymore. My husband, who's 31, has wanted to name her Claire for basically my entire pregnancy. He told me it was the name of one of his closest friends who died a few years before we met. I said no almost immediately. Not because I dislike the name, I actually think it's pretty, but because I wasn't comfortable naming our first child after somebody I'd never met or even heard of until I got pregnant. I figured he'd be disappointed. We'd throw around a bunch of other names and eventually we'd find one we'd both liked. That never happened. Every few weeks he'd bring up Claire again. Sometimes we were already talking about names and sometimes completely out of nowhere. By the end of my pregnancy, I was honestly tired of having the same conversation over and over. The thing that's bothering me now isn't even the name. We've been together for over five years, married for two, and somehow I'd never heard this woman's name until I was pregnant. I've met his parents, his brothers, his college friends, people he's known forever, and nobody has ever mentioned Claire. - What? - I even asked one of his college friends at our baby shower because I thought maybe I'd somehow forgotten hearing about her and he just looked confused and said he didn't know who I was talking about. Then after our daughter was born, while we were filling out the paperwork, my husband asked one last time if I'd reconsider. I said no, and that's when he told me he'd always imagined naming his daughter after her. I asked why he'd never told me that before, and he just shrugged and said he didn't think it mattered. We've argued about it twice since we got home. He keeps saying I'm making this into something it isn't, but I just don't understand how somebody can matter enough that you picture naming your future daughter after them, yet somehow they never come up in five years together. My mom thinks I should let him have the name because it's obviously meant something to him for a long time. My sister thinks that's exactly why I shouldn't. Maybe I'm just exhausted because I've barely slept since I gave birth, but I'm so tired of feeling like I'm missing part of the story. It's gone to the point where I'm thinking about calling his mom and asking who Claire was because I don't know what else to do. It feels completely out of line, but so does finding out about somebody this important while I'm filling out our daughter's birth certificate. Would I be overreacting if I called her? Not at all. No, man, solve this mystery. Yeah. The hell's going on. We need the update. I'm like, who is Claire? I'm curious if she's asking her husband. The fact that it's like, wait, why haven't you brought this up? And him just shrugging me like, I just didn't think it would matter. It's like, what? You want to name our daughter after a person? And you're like, I just didn't think about it. Specifically a woman? Yeah. It's like, we have to know. Did you guys, what's going on? Yeah, what's going on? No, I feel like that's like the least that he could do. It's like, explain, like, show a picture. We're living in 2026. Like, you, if that person is your best friend, then you have photos and memories or something to be like, yeah, this is this person. I also frankly don't care, though, if, like, it sounds insensitive to say, but like, it shouldn't matter. Even if this is a fully real story and the wife even knew it, whatever, it's like, if she doesn't want to name their daughter, it's like, hey, man, it's all right, sorry, you can. Yeah. Joint decision here. Get a bird. Yeah. And the bird is claimed. Not your daughter. But like, yeah, it's like, because it's, he's, he is, it seems like he's treating their daughter like his daughter and not. Like, it's just like, oh, I get to make all the decisions a little bit. Yeah. It's like, hey, man, after, after the first no. Yeah. But after the 50th. Yeah. Come on, man. You just have no respect. Yeah. And it feels very weird to be like, I want to name my daughter after this person, but then not tell you. was the case if you didn't want to tell her anything about the why not just suggest the name? Be like, hey, do you like the name Claire? - He should have just been like, hey, what about Claire? - Yeah, and it's like, I don't, and then he's like, yeah, I wanna name her Claire after my best friend, but I'm not gonna tell you anything about her. She died years ago. - What if, he's fully, I think my probably leading theory is that he's completely fabricating the story just because he likes the name Claire and he wants that. So he was like, I gotta put some weight behind this so that it will for sure get picked. - Yeah, it's stupid. (laughing) - But this guy sounds stupid. - And it's having the opposite effect, and then at this point, maybe he just needs to come clean. - But he said she died a few days before, for years before they met. - Yeah, and they've been together five years. - That's right. - So he knew her eight years ago. - I'm just like, still, I'm like, this, this child, it should be a name that matters to both of you. - Yeah. - She died a few years before they met. They've made sure they were five years doing some math. He's 30, he's 22, at least. Like, when, and if he's been a best friend, he's probably been friends with her since he was like, yeah, like 18, 19, and none of his college friends have ever heard of her. - Whoa. - Like he's-- - Trevor to the math. - He's in college with a best friend, and his college friends are like, I've never heard that name before. - Yeah. - He feels unlikely. - If the grief hit him that hard, if you think that some friend or something would be like, yeah, I remember he was going through this tough time where he lost his friend. Man, now everyone, that could maybe not be the case, but it is not adding up. - Yeah. - Something's weird here. Do you, what are your leading theories? - I have theories, okay. But this is a real woman, maybe. - You think she was real? - Who maybe really died? - Or maybe is a lot of, you know, who's to say? - So I'm gonna keep my theories close to my chest for now. - We have, unfortunately, had stories on Reddit where someone pitched a name, and it was, I think it was related to an affair and like cheating and stuff. - Sure. - There's been, people are dastardly. - Yeah. - Crazy. - Okay. - Crazy. - Last question is calling the mom crossing the line. - I don't know. - Thanks a lot. - I don't think so at this point. Why would it, why would, yeah. - He's saying something really intense and he's not giving information to that guy. - Also, why is he not telling you? - Why do you have to call the mom? - Yeah. - That's weird. - If it's like, "Hey, you want to name our daughter this?" Then I get to have all the information. - Yeah, tell me why. - The man that you're having a child with, like you deserve to know, he should be telling you and communicating things to you. - All right, comments, not overreacting. Ask his mother about Claire. Someone said, "Tell 'em to get a fish and name it Claire." - Okay. - The answer is no. You've been saying no for months and if he's never mentioned her to anyone before now, I almost guarantee you it was some type of hidden romance thing. Not overreacting at all. - Update. Okay, we're gonna find out. Hopefully. - We better. - Hopefully. - I wasn't expecting to update this two days later, but a lot happened really fast. First, thanks to everyone who commented. I think I'm gonna jump to, regardless of Claire, I think he's cheating. - Whoa. - Just the level of disrespect. I'm just like, yeah, that's a guy. - That's like his alive internet girlfriend. - Yeah, I'm just like, yeah. - He's clearly being dishonest. - I'm lying about something, like. - And that's me being, that's a, from reading so many Reddit stories that I'm just like, "My radar goes off now." Or I'm like, "Oh, he's buying hot dogs every day?" - Cheating. - That's a real thing. - What's the real thing? - That was a real story. - Buying hot dogs every day? Cheating. - Damn. A bunch of you told me to talk to my mother-in-law because she probably know the answer. I went back and forth on it for a while because it felt weird to go around my husband like that, but eventually I did call her. She asked if I wanted to meet for coffee the next morning, so I did. I honestly thought I was going to leave feeling embarrassed. I figured she'd tell me Claire really was just a close friend and I'd realized I'd let myself get carried away because I'm exhausted and emotional and just had a baby. The first thing she asked me was what my husband had already told me about Claire. I said that she'd been his best friend and he wanted to name our daughter after her. She just kind of looked at me for a second. Then she told me they'd been engaged. - No. - The more we talked, the more names came up. His parents knew, his brother knew, and one of his old roommates knew because they'd lived together at the time. Funny enough, it was the same friend who I'd asked that our baby shower, no one had told me anything. Apparently most people just knew he'd been dating someone who got sick. His mom told me Claire was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer not long after they started dating. They moved fast after that because they knew they probably didn't have years together, so he proposed. She died not long after. She also told me she'd assumed I'd known about all of this for years. When we got engaged, she thought he'd already told me. Same thing when we got married. Same thing when I got pregnant. I called bullshit, but maybe I'm just looking to point fingers. I drove home after that and just waited for him to get back from work because there wasn't any chance I was going to act like everything was normal. I confronted him that night and it went awful. Truly, he acted like an entirely different person. At first he wanted to know why I'd gone to his mom. Then it became that I had no right to dig into his past. Then it became that Claire had nothing to do with our marriage. Then it was that I'd betray his trust by involving his family. It just kept changing. I'd answer one thing and we'd somehow end up arguing about something else. I asked him when he planned on telling me he'd been engaged because we'd already been together for over five years, married for two, and now we had daughter. He said he always meant to tell me, but he didn't. He never fucking told me and I'm so angry at how selfish it was. I packed a bag that night and went to my sister's house with the baby. Before people assumed we're getting divorced, that's not why I left. I still love this man and we have a child together. I couldn't imagine raising her split between two households. I left because we were both angry and I could tell the argument wasn't going anywhere. My sister's been helping with the baby. Yesterday she realized I hadn't eaten since breakfast and practically shoved a sandwich into my hands because I'd completely forgotten. This whole thing has been exhausting and I haven't slept at all. A few people asked about the birth certificate. The hospital told us we had time to finish the paperwork after we left. So we weren't forced to pick a name before going home. We obviously aren't going to leave it forever, but right now neither of us is in any position to make that decision. My sister started calling her Ellie because she said she felt weird saying the baby all the time and somewhere over the last day I've started doing it too. I don't know if that's going to end up being her name, but it's the working filler with this shit storm that's going on. My husband has been calling and texting since I left. He wants to see our daughter and we've made that happen because none of this has anything to do with her. Whatever's going on between us, she's still his daughter and he loves her. I don't want people getting the idea that I'm trying to keep her away from him because I'm not. I've seen a lot of comments saying the real issue is that he loved someone before me. It really isn't. If he told me about Claire years ago, I don't think we'd be here. I would have felt awful for him. I probably would have cried hearing what happened but I wouldn't have held it against him. What really hurts is the lies and the manipulation. But then again, can you even call it lying? It's not like I ever asked him, "Oh, were you married before?" Because who the hell asks that? Instead, I found out because he wanted our daughter to have her name and then I found out from his mother that she'd been his fiancee. That's the part I can't look past. I looked back on my other post and it feels like it was written by someone else. Two days ago, I thought we were arguing about a name. God, I was so naive. I suppose the question has turned into would I be overreacting to leave him over this? I'm certainly mad but I don't think we're at that point yet and I don't want that for my baby either. Anyway, that's where things are. Thank you all so much for the support. This has really been a great place to be able to vent and get advice. A very special thanks to all those who helped me realize I wasn't crazy. Whoa. Okay, that's crazy. That's crazy. And this is recent? There's a month ago. There's a month ago. This is crazy. Oh my god. I just, that isn't just him leaving out like that part of his life in the digital age. He has to be actively taking steps to keep that and the fact that she said like the one person that she asked didn't say anything about it. Like that means that he went to or has gone to his friends and been like, hey, she doesn't know about Claire and I'd prefer. Like that's, he's doing things to keep that information from her, which is, I also, she goes, she goes, who asks have you been married before? I'm like, I think, I don't, I think in a relationship, you don't need to know all the details of a past relationship, but it's like, oh, have you been in a relationship before? Is one of like the first questions that kind of come. This man lost. This man lost. I'm just like, yeah, if you're married before, that is huge. Yeah. And also, I care a lot, I know grief is hard and that's not his fault, but it's like knowing someone if they're a widower or not, that's a big thing. Like that changes how you might engage with that relationship because you go, okay, you were in love with someone who passed away, that's heavy. That's going to affect things. And then it's not going to surprise you when you get pregnant that he might go, oh, could we name our daughter after the person who passed away from years ago. Then you're like, okay, I understand why you're saying this and we can have a real conversation about it. But this is why I'm like, even no form of lying, I can just approve of, like this is lying, like super keeping is lying in a way. And I'm just like, that's so intense 'cause now she's been in a different relationship for five years. Oh my God. Tiffany New York-Pollard, she has been lied to several times. Mm-hmm. She has. And it's so much different than like being like, oh, there was this like six month relationship or something. Like I had a girlfriend like, you know, when I was in high school or something for six months. Like if you're not, like bringing that up in your dating history, like whatever, but like an entire relationship where you were engaged and like, that's really heavy. - Yeah, yeah, I don't know, that's not, that's not okay. - I wanna feel for the guy, I do feel for the guy 'cause that's such an intense thing to go through, but it's like for one, then clearly you weren't, if I was his friend, I'd be like, oh, if you're not even telling this person, then are you even ready to be in another relationship? - Yeah. - Like, oh my God. - I wonder why he didn't tell her. - I just think like, I mean, I don't really know. - Right? - It's about my pay grade, but I'm like, grief I know is so intense and like, clearly, he's just probably still dealing with it. Like, it's somehow also disrespectful to Claire. - Yeah. - Like to do this to like, just make her complete secret as opposed to like being like, this happened. Like, 'cause I understand, and I've read other Reddit stories where people talk about being a widow or a widow or, and it's a complicated thing of like, you're gonna enter into a new relationship, but it's not like you had a breakup. Like, so there's something where that person who passed away is always kind of part of your life. - Yeah. - And you kinda like, don't wanna let that go, and that's fair, and that's fine. You can find ways to like, honor that, but he's somehow disrespecting everyone by doing this. And I understand it might be coming from a really conflicted place, but the result is the same. And he needs to be talking to like a grief counselor or something to like, figure this out. - Yeah. - 'Cause this is not, and try to need-- - And now, yeah, she's never gonna be called Claire now. - No, no. And then also now, like, it's a tough place to come back from. Like, she's asking, should I leave him? I get that, like, you have a baby now. And that's so tough, but it's like, the real question is like, okay, well, can you trust him again? And like, that's so tough. Like, I do think they need couples there. Like, a lot of therapy needs to be happening here. - I also don't love like the way that she described when she like, did talk to him and confront him that he was like a completely different person. - Scary, scary, scary, scary, scary, scary. - A big part of himself? - Yeah. - He's hiding probably a massive part of himself. - Yeah. - Final comment on this. Someone said, glad you got answers. Sorry he wouldn't be truthful about who she was. I don't think this is necessarily divorce worthy, but you guys need counseling. Don't name your daughter Claire. It will brew resentment for you because it'll be a reminder of his lies. Ellie is a cute name. I hope you have her paperwork because if you don't, he may go behind your back and file it with Claire as her name. Baby names are two yes, one no. You've said no repeatedly and he keeps pushing, which leads to this. Tell him that the baby's paperwork needs to be filled out. Claire is not going to be her name period and that if he won't help you decide a different name that you'll name her what you want but that you'd much prefer that the two of you come to an agreement. Do this with other people around. Makes it harder for him to manipulate you. Good luck. - Whoa. - You have way bigger problems in her name. Don't leave the name, don't figure. - Yeah, yeah. - You gotta figure this out. - It's so tough though, like even that where they're like, this isn't divorce worthy but have people around. Don't let them manipulate you. I'm just like fuck, like this is a really scary situation. Like if he does not, is not able to like, come clean about everything. You gotta get everything out there. This, what I'm saying is not like, oh, you need to divorce him. It's just more like if you guys, if he cannot get this figured out soon, this will lead to divorce. 'Cause it's gonna lead to you having no job and trust between each other. - And I think what you said Shane about just like, oh, like maybe this is a sign that he wasn't ready to get back into a relationship. Like I have to imagine that like maybe internally the part of the reason that he wasn't telling her is because he had some guilt of like, oh, I do still really like love her, she passed away. And yeah, if he didn't work through that and now like for it to be such a big deal to him, the fact that he's like, no, we have to name her Claire. We have to name her Claire. It's just, yeah, it feels like it's just a sign of him. Like he is not dealt with his grief in the way that he needs to. And that's just not fair to his partner. - Absolutely. - Like it's really, really tough to put her in that position where now she has some responsibility like for helping him through that. Like now it's become like her issue as well. When it's something that if he was respectful, he would have worked through that beforehand. - And it's something like this is sadly, not like some uncommon thing. There are tons of people who lose a partner and then move on and have another relationship. And that's a thing that like counselors can help you with. It's not easy, obviously. I couldn't imagine wanting to name your kid that name. - Like they're experiencing their first, like this is a moment that's being ripped away now because of stuff he hasn't handled. Like this is their first child together. This should be the happiest moment of their life. And now it's not about the child at all. Like I actually feel so bad for this baby that this is the story of their birth. - Yeah, 'cause I mean, you do. It's like a pretty common thing to be like, "Oh, like why'd your parents name you that?" Or like, "Where'd you get your name?" And stuff like that. And then to be like, "Oh, wow." - And like the story. - Once again, like I feel for his grief, but at the end of it too, he's kind of, he's made this about himself. Like Anna, it's like, I understand where it's coming from, but man, she's being erased in this situation. What weirdly this makes me think about is there was a Reddit post I was reading and it was about like what's like a weird caveat you require in like the next, in a relationship that you, the like in a relationship, whatever. And I saw a post and it was by a guy who was a widower. And he was like, weirdly like a thing that I need is I'm only probably gonna date like, or marry a widow. 'Cause he's like, it's such a complicated thing that I have this person who's so important to me in a romantic sense. And that's hard to convey. And I remember reading it and being like, that's crazy. Like I remember reading and just like, and I'm thinking about that as I'm reading this of like, to not tell her is so immense. Like, it's not fair to him. He didn't ask for this, but it's the reality. And if he's not cluing her in, now it's happening. You know, now they're dealing with it. And it's so unfortunate, but we'll see. I want to have faith that if they really do go to counseling and stuff that it can be worked out, right? But it's a lot of work. - I think I get like, and I mean, it's a lot of work for both of them, but I think that like, he has to be really willing and he has to put in, I think more like a lot more work to deal with the grief and trauma that he already had. And I just, I would hope that he can be receptive to that. 'Cause like, I don't know, it seems like based on his reaction that like, that might not be something that he's wanting to do right away, but I don't know, I hope so. I hope so, 'cause that is, it's like, it's gotta be really, really hard to lose someone like that. - Yeah. But you do, you have to take the steps to heal him. - Name the baby Jared. It's a beautiful name. - It's a beautiful name. - Our next story comes from am I overreacting? Hot off the press. Kiana, you were probably up till 2 a.m. Grabbing all these stories 'cause they are fresh. This next story's probably gonna be just like, it happened just now. - Wow. Am I overreacting for asking my girlfriend's parents why they keep all the doors inside their home locked at night? Okay. - That's crazy, that's crazy. - Oh God. - That's crazy. - A few months ago, I, a 19 year old boy, met the parents of my girlfriend, who's 19, for the first time. My girlfriend invited me over to her mom's 50th birthday party. Her mom told me beforehand she'd prefer if I slept over since there'd be lots of drinking and it's about a two hour drive away from where I live. We had been seeing each other for about a year so I was excited and nervous to meet her parents. Everything was great. Her parents were really nice and treated me like family off the bat. They had a guest room where I slept. Right before we all headed off to bed, the mom gave me a set of keys and told me after everyone went to their rooms, she was going to lock all the doors in the house, including all the bedrooms, bathrooms, and door to the basement. She showed me which key unlock. I'd be like, you know what? - You're overreacting, okay? - Got to lock the bathroom. - You got to lock it in your pants. - Good night. - She locks all that, so you're locked in the bedroom. - Mm-hm. - No fucking way, sorry, no fucking way. - No. - She showed me which key unlocked each door and sent me off to the guest room. I thought it was weird, but I was pretty tipsy and exhausted, so I fell asleep before thinking about it. The following morning, I asked my girlfriend why she locked all the doors at night. I asked her if it was a cultural thing since her family is Venezuelan and I am very white and sometimes uninformed of other cultures. She told me it had nothing to do with culture and that it was a long story and she'd tell me later. I thought that was strange, but I was too focused on making a good impression with her parents to even really think about it. I had forgotten about it until a few days ago when I met her parents for the second time. After dinner, we were talking about our families and traditions and stuff and I mentioned how they locked the doors and I thought that was some sort of cultural thing. I could feel an awkward feeling in the air after I said that. The mom dismissed it and the dad whispered to me saying it'd be better if I didn't bring that up again. Now I'm starting to think something weird is going on. (laughing) Yeah. Sure enough, after we went to our rooms, the mom handed me the keys and told me to have a good night. I think the mom's a werewolf. >> Yeah. >> That's like the only explanation. >> Yeah. >> So hey, lock all the doors. >> Lock all the doors. >> So that I- >> She lives by the moon. >> Yeah, she's like, lock all the doors so I can't get in. >> Yeah. >> It's like I'm gonna lose control. >> Yeah. >> When the clock strikes midnight. >> The following day, when my girlfriend and I were driving back to where we live, she told me the same thing that her dad said. That'd be better to not bring up that subject again. All I said was she could tell me anything if it was serious and she said it wasn't a big deal and change the topic. Can I say, I have zero fucking tolerance for that shit. >> I cannot. >> People who are vague, I'm like, no, that's so odd. >> Don't be like, it's, don't bring up that subject, it's like, it's not a big deal, I'm like, it is a big deal. >> Yeah. >> If you're telling me not to bring up that big deal. >> Yeah. >> If it's not a big deal, I'm gonna bring it up. >> Yeah. >> How about that? >> I seriously cannot stop thinking about this. I want to bring it up again since I'm concerned there's something serious that happened and I don't want anything weighing down on her like that. Am I overreacting or thinking too hard into this? The verdict is not overreacting and I agree, you don't, what? This sounds like a horror story. >> It's really crazy because my first thought is maybe there's like something when she was a child or something like maybe her house was broken into. Maybe this, like she went through something really traumatic and so it's like she just has this weird thing where like I have to lock the doors. But then if that's the case, like why is that not something that the daughter can be like yeah, this thing happened to her when she was young. >> Yeah. >> Tell me. >> Like why does it have to be so shrouded in mystery because that's just gonna make like more uncomfortable and like I don't know like if I want to be there in the house. >> Yeah. >> How do you use the bathroom? >> I have a lot of questions about this logistics. I also don't understand most rooms in a house you can lock from the inside of the room. Why not just be like hey and make sure can you lock, we like to lock our doors from the inside? >> Yeah. >> Still, there's no version of it where I'm not freaked out. >> Hey, we like to lock all the doors from the inside. >> And hey, make sure just just lock your door. >> She's saying that she's giving him the keys before I'm confused. >> Like is that so that he can like if you do need to use the restroom, you can unlock it. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> I would never sleep over at this place. By the way. >> Whatever you really say. >> You might actually be very serious. >> Not if there's a fire. >> Oh. >> Yeah. >> How are you supposed to remember the keys, just being told one time, what if you forget which keys, which? The fire? >> This first comment, that's actually very dangerous if there's a fire. Someone said it's also dangerous that these are the parents from get out. Third reply. Also so dangerous if you have diarrhea. >> Yes. >> Yeah. >> I think what's happening is mental illness probably, could be. >> It seems like. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> And maybe that's why the address. >> And maybe you're. >> Explain that to you. Hey. Just so you know. >> But maybe that's why she feels uncomfortable talking about it. >> Yeah. >> But it's like, you got to talk. >> Yeah. >> I'm not getting in a room and you're locking the door without an explanation. >> Yeah. That would really require a heads up, hey, just so you know. >> Yeah. >> I think even the most like, even the most extreme reasons for why someone might do this. I think you could probably be like pretty reasonably understandable where it's like, even if it was something serious, like, oh, she has or someone has a mental illness and is like prone to wandering or opening doors, like, that'd be like, okay, like I appreciate you telling me, I'll make sure to keep the door locked. >> Yeah. >> Like, but not saying anything makes it seem so sinister, like really scary. >> Yeah. >> No explanation is so scary. >> Yeah. >> And then don't bring it up again. >> Yeah. >> What? >> Fuck that. >> Fuck that. >> You're in a horror movie. Or if an older family member lives with them, they may have some sort of dementia type disease. Maybe something happened when one of them was a small child, like they got outside and got hurt at night. I genuinely don't know. This is very intriguing, but I wouldn't bring it up again. Very interesting indeed. If I'm not able to bring it up again, this is going to sound crazy. If I can't bring it up again, I'm not visiting again. >> Yeah. >> If I can't get an explanation, I'm not going in this house. >> No. >> That's the same way, I think I would be like, hey, I have whatever is going on. It's not something worth breaking up over, I don't think, but be like, hey, I don't think I'm going to spend the night at your parents' house if I don't know why you do this thing. >> Yeah, and it's like they've been together for a year. I know they're young, they're 19. But it's also like, at a certain point, I'm also like, hey, if we're not comfortable having conversations about things, then that's a sign of our relationship that we need to be able to talk about stuff. >> It sounds like everyone should be single. >> You know what? >> And the mom, the mom, the grandma, everyone, okay. >> No more marriage. >> No way to lose. >> You could give me a vague explanation. >> Yeah. >> And you'd be like, my mom, something traumatic happened to her and she needs to do this for her own calmness. I'd be like, great. >> Yeah. >> Totally. >> And then I'm like, I'm fine not asking more questions about that. >> Yeah. >> And then I'm never going to bring it, it's not like I'm going to bring it up again. It's like if I have just the littlest explanation, then like, cool, I'm good, I'm done, whatever. Like saying that you don't want me to bring it up again, and it's this weird thing. >> It just makes me want to like know what it is. >> I'm like, am I an immediate danger? >> Yeah. >> That's what I want to know. It's time for our final story. This M.I.O. re-acting comes from July of this year. Am I overreacting? My boyfriend sent me a meme implying spending time with me is boring compared to his homies. My boyfriend, who's 21 and I, a 19 year old girl, have been together since our second year of high school. He sent me a meme that said, most entertaining night with your girlfriend, showing a happy girl and a very bored guy lying on a bed doing absolutely nothing. Then it said, least entertaining night with your bro, followed by a compilation of videos of guys doing crazy stuff, jumping on tables, accidentally hitting each other, jumping on to a trampoline from a roof, gambling, et cetera. >> I'm sorry, can I say something? I hate, it makes my blood boil the whole like, oh, I need to get away from the old ball and chain, like time to go on a boys trip where we can actually have some fun, like, dude, do you even like, just have sex with your friends? I don't know, marry them if you all you want to do is hang out with them. >> Yeah, sure. >> My fiance is my favorite person in the world to hang out with. Like anytime I'm doing something like, man, this would be more fun if she was here, like, it's so, that's so stupid. >> Yeah. >> But guys that are like that are so annoying. >> If your girlfriend's not your bro, what are you doing? >> Literally. >> You know? >> Literally. >> All right. Why don't we just read these text messages? >> Oh. >> You have them? >> Oh, my God. >> We've got the text. >> Is that a picture? >> You've got the text messages printed out. >> We have the text messages here. So we have the role of OP and the role of Boyfriend. >> Oh. >> Oh, my God. >> Is either part calling to one of you? >> I want to be the boyfriend. >> All right. Jared, you have booked the boyfriend. >> Okay. >> And I'm the OP. >> You are the OP. >> Okay. >> You are the girlfriend. >> Okay. >> Boyfriend sends this picture to OP with the caption "os" and is most entertaining night with your girlfriend, followed by most entertaining night with your bros, and we begin. >> That's a joke, right? >> Yeah. >> It's like funny. >> I mean, I get it, but do you really think that I am slash our dates are boring? >> Please don't be mad. Oh, my God. But OFC, it's much more interesting to hang out at my homies than to sit with you at home YK. >> You know. >> It's lots of question marks. >> Lots of question marks. >> It's just how boys work. >> Like friendship and relationship are completely different. You should not compare these two things. >> This is literally what your meme does. It compares a boring evening with girlfriend and exciting day with dudes. Why e-space IG? And then reply, I replied to my earlier text, "Do you really think that I am boring?" Answer the question, please. No, no. Don't be mad. Please. But just chilling is never so interesting as being with homies. Like, I'm going to explode for real. Chilling with girlfriend is not so exciting as doing some crazy stuff with boys. I've sent this text with you before. It's hard to explain, but it's equally satisfying. You know, I love you so much that even boring things satisfy me. >> Okay, so you do think that time we usually spend is boring. >> Oh my God, can you fucking read? >> Like, I used to be your homie. Remember, we used to be friends before we got together? >> It's different. Why don't you understand, bra? >> Why do you keep calling me bra? >> Sorry, that's not true. >> Like, to be called boring is one of the worst things for me. Like, I tried to get you to paint my minis with me. >> Bro, I hate it. >> And you know about it. >> I can't fucking believe. You really think of me as a time killer. Like, do you even think of me as an interesting person? >> Please, stop it. So then, replying to the question of, do you even think of me as an interesting person? BF said, can I be honest, bra, like, sometimes, I even want to leave because of boredom. You're yapping and hobbies do not make you any more interesting. >> This guy hates her. >> Oh my God. >> This is crazy. >> Boys will be more interested in being with boys. I think girls, that's just how it works. - Dude, I think he just likes men. Like I don't know, this is crazy. Oh my fucking god. - Please don't think of this fact as if it's something bad. I still love you so much. I don't want to argue now. And then replying to boys will be more interested in being with boys than girls. Are we dead ass right now? - This guy's 21 by the way. - This is maybe the one of just the worst. - Oh my god. - This is brutal. You could have told me he was 14. - I mean, this goes back to, I don't know how men date women. I don't know how those two people get in the same room. - It's crazy. He's literally just going on and on like, no, it's like not, like I love you. You're just so boring and I hate being around you. - Yeah. - But I love you so much. It's just, I don't find any joy in being in your presence. He's also a piece of shit because earlier he's like, oh, even being bored, like it's satisfying 'cause I love you. And then later on he's like, no, I actually want to leave most of the time. - Yeah, I mean, it's so mean. And then to be so matter of fact about it. - To call it a fact is so. - This is somehow the most teenage conversation. But like I said, he's 21. - Yeah. - I like you. - He's your babies. - Yeah, I was a dumbass 21 year old, but like I can't even fathom. - I know, but like, I feel like a boomer for saying this and maybe like, I know that I was probably a lot stupider when I was a teenager than I remember. But I'm also like, our phones can type so much better now. - Yeah. - Like, we were using T9, sure. Like, so our sentence is sounded dumb. But like, dude, come on, bro. - Teams will always be dumb. - It's true. - That's forever. - It's true, but he's 21. - Yeah. - Come on. - Yeah, come on. - A little bit, yeah. - Just grow up a little bit. - But also, what's really more infuriating is his logic. I'm like, you're sitting here in the year 2026 saying, boys will always be more interested in boys. - Yeah. - I'm just like, come on, dude. - Yeah. - Oh, oh, he continues. I didn't really appreciate that and took it to mean that the time we spent together is boring for him and that he doesn't enjoy it. To be fair, we really don't do much. He comes over and we play video games together or I paint my models while he's on his phone and we just cuddle and chat. It really doesn't sound that amazing, but I thought it was enough for us. We were both introverts who spend a lot of time at home and he has never complained about being bored. His implication that his homies are more interesting than his girlfriend is just obnoxious to me. My blood boils just thinking about it. People have always told me how interesting and funny to be around I am and I was proud of that. We were friends for several years before our relationship started and I always thought that was the ideal way to get together. Getting closer slowly without even planning it. Like, I used to be one of his homies but I guess it doesn't really matter now, LOL. I don't really know what to think. Maybe I'm asking for too much. My mom said that this is normal behavior for young guys but I still feel bad about this whole situation. I truly don't know if I should take this meme seriously. Oh, you should. It's not normal behavior. Yeah, and even, and you know what? If it's normal behavior, then you don't need to tolerate that. Like, you're better off just not being a relationship. It's maybe common, but it shouldn't be. No, there are, I mean, I don't know what like 20-year-old guys are like right now or wherever we're at. But it's like, you don't have to tolerate it though. No. I just get the vibe that this guy is like, 21 in the year of our Lord 2026. We know that it's tough out there for young men and the influences that they have on the Internet. And it just gives to me like, he's with his girlfriend and he feels like he has to like tame himself. Like, when he goes out with his boys, he can just be like a much worse person. Like, he's like, oh, I can find, I'm around my boys. I can finally relax and like, say things that I would never say around my girlfriend because she'd get mad at me. Like, that's the vibe that it gives. Yeah. Which is just so disgusting. I mean, even if that's his vibe, don't send that meme to your girlfriend. Yeah. Send it to your boys. Have a good laugh. Yeah. Don't send it to your girlfriend. Be disrespectful towards her behind her back. Yeah. Verdict is not overreacting. Comments, I mean, do you really want to be with someone who finds you boring? The way he talks to you isn't even respectful. He didn't even apologize for being a dick. Well, he responded, his words caught me by surprise. I would have never thought that he finds me boring. That's the hard part. We got together because of our shared hobbies and interests and we always could find things to yap about. Like, I'm so confused right now. Someone said, find someone who will like you. Oh, he said, yeah, but how the fuck did I end up in a relationship with someone who doesn't even like me? Genuine question to myself. Ah, to a 19-year-old, I would say, that's a very common experience that don't worry. Yeah. That happens. And it might happen again. Yeah. You just got to clock it and go, oh, I gotta go. Yeah, it's just a classic case of when someone shows you who they are, believe them, like this guy clearly is not. It sounds like he's trying, he's trying to break up with her. Like, he's getting so mean in these messages. It's like, just get out of there. Dude, fight. Oh, goodbye. The yapping? We can't be talking to each other like that? No, no. No. Anyways, that's it for all of our stories. Okay. These have been some crazy ones. Yeah, yeah. There's a couple that I'm like, I want it. I mean, they're so recent. I want an update on it. Like, we didn't get an update and I feel like it kind of needs an update. I'm going to be thinking about these ones. Dude, this one's going to stick with me. I'm really thinking about this one. This one's going to stick with me. Thank you Trevor and Jared for joining me today. Hey, thank you. Hey, put her there. Hey, hey. It's always a pleasure. There we go. Solid.
