This time it's really Christmas, you can go to www.MattRodgersOfficial.com. Podcasts are a visual medium. If you're not watching me right now, I am holding in my hands my vinyl. It's called "Have you heard of Christmas?" The answer to that question is coming. At this time it's really Christmas. I'm playing all over the country and in London and in Canada. That makes it a world tour. Harry Styles, you're on Burn Notice. I'll see you soon. I think Brandition knows has her best lyric, which can compete with "He Wanna Fox Later Richard Richard Link Later," which is. He wants that head white and blue if you know what I mean. Totally. Yeah. He wants that head white and blue balls just in case people don't get. Yeah, white-com blue balls. So can I ask a question now? It's like when there's white-com, you no longer have blue balls. Well I think he's good either way. Am I right guys? Look, man. Oh, I see him. How am I? Bowen, look over there. How is that culture? Yes. It's nice. Yeah. Let's culture Eastas. Ding dong! Let's culture Eastas calling. Happy Friday. Happy Friday. Wow. I guess that's a kind of thing we can say weekly. Let's talk about the word Friday. I think, break it down. Yeah, a huge part of the vibe and the sort of "Ora" of Friday is that. Behind the "Ora"! That's the word Friday here on Moscow. Well, I think the fact that it has the word Friday in it is really doing a lot of the work. Yeah, well, and also it speaks to how we feel at the end of the week fried. But, oh, that's interesting because the word Friday to me has like a fun sort of like. Certainly better than grilled. Not as healthy for you as healthy, but so tasty. Yeah. I love fried food. And in Mandarin, I'll say in Mandarin at least, the word is "yoza" and "za" is kind of fun too. It's kind of a pizzazzi. Is that the word for Friday or is that the word for Friday? Yo is. No, no, no. Friday is since you, which is day five. So different. So that's literal. Let's not talk about that. But just the word "fry" in Mandarin is "yoza" or "za" "yo is oil" but "za" is like "fry". And I think just like the word "fry" to me in English, let's get back to English. Let's go back to Anglo. Let's always do on this part. Back to the beginning. The beginning, the English, the first language. The first language. I think "fry" is a fun word. Absolutely. That's all. But use it in a sense. Tell everybody how you use it the best the way you can. Well, it was gay rights. But if you're gay rights, people were killed. Nobody was killed. No one was killed. Nobody was killed. They were fried. They were fried. I guess they were so high on marijuana. I'll share. I think this is important. It actually is and I should be held accountable. We're going to try to make this a little cooler. She had two glasses.
- This is a white wine in her hands on the Google sheet. - Still on me first, that was strike one. That was, that wasn't the first thing with her. - That wasn't the first thing with her. In the words of your ex-waiter at Nikki's on the bed when he was 17. So then I turned her when she was in the middle of the show on her phone looking at a Google sheet. I turned her, I go, you're at a, you're at live theater. - You're at live theater. - You reached over me and then I said that. - And then I did say that to a little girl and her mother who kept pushing into us because they were reaching over their phone at the Ares tour. - At the Ares tour. - I go, you're at a concert. - And you got to read, I'm gonna say one more time, the story of my life, my Katherine Dreser Moron, she talks about this, how the reason we'll be bringing our phones at concerts with nary, an intention to watch those videos back for the rest of your fucking life is because our emotional responses are so oriented towards like reaching for our phones when we have a dysregulated moment. - It's like, why are you recorded? - So I'm in a hashtag, confront myself. - It's not, I've done it. - No, we've all done it. - We've all done it. - But you have to have tacked when you do it. And this, so this happens. - Right. - Last night. - So, well, speaking of, well, you were till last night, but I wanna say, I randomly ended up seeing three. - Randomly, I'm always at this shit. But I saw Carly Rae Jepson, you crushed that because all things go was canceled, which was heartbreaking for many, but a lot of the acts ended up like doing pop-up shows. I got to go to Carly Rae Jepson at Irving. So great. Just, I was watching her and I was like, oh my God, I can't believe she came on our show. - So effervescent and fabulous. And then I ended up, I had to go to LA for a wedding quickly. - Yes. - So I'm in sort of, I did a couple things by myself, little solo things. - I love this. - And I'm ready to report on both. But first I'll say, I went to Michelle Branch at the will turn. And first I'll say, it's like, her music is like chicken soup. It is so like, it's really, it just feels like it's hugging you from a time back then. And she sounds great, she sounds the same. - I love that. - Also, the crowd was, you're there partying with everyone. Like there's incredibly diverse, all ages crowd. Really just so supportive and loving and really good vibes. And then Lisa Loeb came out and they sang stay together. And I was literally emotional and I was like, wow, I don't think I'll ever see this song live again. You know what I mean? And I was like, that song, they started playing it. I realized how important it was to me. - Huge song. - It was so huge. And I was so like young when it came out. And I just remember seeing her and her glasses like plainly addressing. And it's just like, her vocal is so distinct. And just how, you know, direct it was. And just something about that really affected me and watching her and Michelle Branch do it. And she too sounds the same. She was so received by the audience. I recorded a little bit of it. Which again, you're like, yeah, but here's the thing. I posted it on Instagram. And everyone was like, why is everyone talking? And I was like, you are right. It is a little bit wild. When you go to these shows, you see how many people are just kind of talking through, especially when they're standing in the back. - I think we need to quiet down a little bit. - Pipe down. - Pipe down, a lot of chat are going on. - 'Cause Lisa Lowe is on stage. - Period. - You know what I'm saying? - With Michelle Branch, the girl that I fantasized, I had a fantasy in middle school. While the spirit room was in my disc, man. While I was in bed, listening to the spirit room, to sweet misery, to you get me, to say nothing of all you wanted. - Say nothing of the hits. - Of the hits. I'm saying, but the deep cuts I know, like the back of my hand, goodbye to you. I mean, come on. - Yeah. - I had fantasies in middle school of, one day Michelle Branch is going to show up to Laredo Middle School in suburban Colorado, and she's going to do a concert in the gym, and she's going to bring me on stage, and we're going to sing sweet misery together. We're going to sing everywhere together. - Now that you've put that out there, it's going to happen. - Michelle. - Come to O'Merry, Michelle. - No, come to Laredo. - I'm inviting you. Do you want to go to Laredo Middle School at any point? - I know, you officially know a guy. - I will meet you there. We will perform in the gymnasium. - Yeah. - For 12-year-olds. - Yeah. - Yeah. - But that was my, they'll be like fantasies. - Who are these people? - Oh my God. - Who the fuck are these people? - Who are these? - Get me, where are my feastables? - I mean, I'm here for one thing. - My feastables. - My feastables. - That's what, that's real a culture. Honey. - I'm here for-- - But I'm real a culture number 34. - 34. - Honey, I'm here for one thing, my feastables. - I say that everywhere I go. - I certainly was saying it last night at the Slater concert. - You wanted your feastables. - I feel like she is one big feastable. Slater can do what Mr. Beast does. - Mr. Beast. - It can never do what Slater does. And that's a rule of culture. Number five. Beast does. - Mr. Beast can never do what Slater does. - Which includes performing like a rock star. It was a small space. It was a Spotify event because she had announced "Worse Man in America" that day, out December 4th, I believe. And so I believe what we're having here is a good old-fashioned Grammy campaign. And I think that Slater is us, for me. Slam dunk for that best new artist. - Absolutely. - Like at least that. Because what she's doing is at such a crazy energetic level. And she's in good vocal health. - Always. - After playing Terminal Five and Brooklyn Paramount. - Yeah. - Speaking, selling those menus out, then going on Seth, then showing up to Deep Bushwick. Or just Broadway Myrtle, what's that. And screaming through electro punk, like rock shit. - Yeah. - Previous new songs for us. - They were great. I think he's got a girl, which we really love. - Oh, that's really good. And then there's one called, "Hey boy." What she played, she just played the record as she was leaving at the end. And that was really good. I think he's got a girl is really good. - Really great. - It's more poppy than I think. - More poppy than I think. And then she had another song called "Neckromantic," which felt like a cousin to cannibalism. - Yeah. - Like very like, sort of surf rock. - Yeah. - Like, you know, a John Waters movie. - And she did, she didn't do crank it, which we were sad, but we she did dance. She did, brand new Chanel and beat up Chanel. And I think that we have a point counterpoint here. You are a fan of brand new Chanel's. - I'm a fan of beat up Chanel. - Because I think brand new Chanel's has-- - Fan of both, but-- - I think brand new Chanel's has her best lyric, which can compete with. He wanna fuck Slater, Richard, Richard Linklater, which is, he want that head, white, and blue, if you know what I mean. - Totally. - It's genius. - Yeah. - He want that head, white, and blue. - White, white, and blue. - And blue balls, just in case people don't get it. - Yeah, white, and blue balls. (laughing) - So, can I ask a question now? It's like, when there's white come, you no longer have blue balls. - Well, I think he's good either way. - Am I right, guys? (laughing) - He's good either way. - I think he knew you had blue balls, and then you have white come. - Work. - You know what I mean? - Yeah, I do know what you mean. - I've never gotten blue balls. - Honey, I always take care of myself. (laughing) - I'm just kidding, I don't know what that was. - Okay, wait, wait, wait, wait. - So, I just wanna say, youth, you think that-- - Oh, I love British, no. - Okay, I'm a beat-up Chanel girlie. I don't think, and I think Slater agrees with me that it's her best song ever. - She will agree that it started off this whole worse girl in America, worse man in America. - That chorus is so, and this is the power of that chorus. She goes, "I need a cigarette!" (shouting) - Who's smoking a cigarette right after? Me, my ass. I don't do that. - Joe Camel could never. - And you wanna know who I go to for cigarettes? - Every time. - Mr. Bowen Yang himself. - Always packet. - I treated myself to one. - I've been off of cigarettes for like a couple months now. - Really good ability. - Got a tactile with me. You wanna know my rule? I can smoke weed, I just can't have it in the house. If it's around-- - That's bad. - Say like being, dooby being passed around at the cool party, you know what I'm saying? - Y'all been at the cool party and there's a dooby being passed around and you can't resist yourself. - Yes, sir. - So, okay, but so I had one as a true 'cause I was like, I'm wearing a truck. I'm wearing like my white trash, like drag. I'm buying a pack of cigarettes on the way to the Slater Code. - For sure. - Good for you. - I'm happy that you indulged in it because that was, that's creating an immersive world. We spoke with Zara about this. - Yes. - And you laughed, someone laughed, back a left. But the thing, and she can laugh. - Do you think Slater can open a Marker Rederville equivalent? - 100%. I think that there is so much world in what she's doing. It actually was appreciating the visuals even more. Because when we got walked into the space, there was this area where you could sit and get a photo taken as if you were Slater under her insignia and I was like, yeah, there's a lot of real visual iconography here and the world, like the sort of trailer park, but like glam world of it. Like it is. - She's a filmmaker. - I need to see the Halloween Horror Night Slater haunted house. - Do you know what they're theming this year? - I don't know much of the theming, but I will say this has to go next year. - This transitions into actually one of the things I wanted to talk about. - Period. (upbeat music) - Lisa, we should tell them about our new show. - Oh my God, Lexi. I'm Lexi Iwaneo, we're two best friends, 22 years apart, but so close at heart. I'm so sorry, I'm seeing a reading of Sadako in the Thousand Paper Cranes by Auderman Donald at the Wonderland Bookstore, 14. - That's crazy, I went to the Wonderland Bookstore yesterday and I heard Nora Jones do a reading of Zero Dark Thirty. - No way! - We'll have to come to the last bookstore, though. And the day before I'm kind of like, I kind of don't have much to do. I had gotten done the things I wanted to do when I realized, oh my God, the fast and the furious Hollywood drift roller coaster is open at the theme park that I literally in LA am next to, right? And I go, I think I'm going in there by myself. Can't pass past it, you're like, I'm going in, you were raw dog in university. - I raw dogged it. I went in, like I walk in, I'm by myself. It's a hundred degrees in LA. It's been a hundred degrees in LA. I said, it's not gonna stop me. I wanna cigarette. - Very that. - So I go in, I get on the line, it's posted at an 80 minute wait time. - Or I think that's not terrible. - Especially because they lie. They lie. - Honestly, if you go to a theme park, this is literally true. Anytime you see the posted wait time, it's at least three quarters of that. It's sometimes even half of that is how long I will be. They try to scare people away from the rides that are gonna get popular so that they can, people can circulate. This is just kind of like theme park know-how. - It's never as scary as you think it's gonna be. So I get on, 'cause I didn't want to do the single riders line because oftentimes single riders lines, they're like in ugly areas. Like it was like. - You wanted a full queue. - I wanted to walk through the queue. I wanted to see the little props and stuff. I wanted to see the little coaster twirl. You know I wanted to do my thing. - Also I have my phone, so it's like, you know. Are you really waiting? - Are you set? - I'm set. So there's been, before I say how this was, there's been a lot of controversy. Because neighbors, including people in your neighborhood. - Well not in my neighborhood, but apparently it's like, it's people into Luca Lake. There was even a town hall about this because it's such a problem. Apparently there's a certain like residential area in that community that every 30 seconds here's the screams of from the roller coaster because it's that intense. And apparently a lot of these people, you know, they work from home. There's one person who apparently does surgery in this area. There's another person who claims they can't record their music anymore because-- - That's tough. - And it is hard. And by the way, my plan was to do like sort of like, on the ground work and I was gonna go do the roller coaster and then I was gonna go drive into the community and see if I could hear it. - And look for evidence. - And search for evidence. So I said I wanna hear the screams. - I wanna hear the screams. - And I searched for evidence. And you were gonna like do it like an Aaron Brockovich. - I was, I was gonna be Aaron Brockovich about this. That this is like your data center or PG&E. - But then I realized like, what am I gonna do? Like if I go in there and I don't hear it, I'm gonna come on this podcast and be like, they're lying. - No. - It's actually not that bad. Like no. So and also I think it would have been a little weird for me to just drive into this area. I think it might be a good community. - Wow. - If that makes people feel less bad. - We give a cap on sympathy then. - No, I'm kidding. - So anyway, the roller coaster has been controversial. - Yes. - For these reasons. And they had to put up a lot of sound barriers, like to like stop block the screams I guess. They've tried. It is nuts. It reminded me of when we were in Japan and did that flying dinosaur- - All the way through. - In Jurassic Park. - Yeah, the tarot doctor, right? - Yes. - That one's insane. - It reminded me of that because there's, what it does is it, the cars itself themselves, drift along the turns. And when it goes upside down, it drifts. So you're literally twisting as you invert. - I don't like that. - I've never seen or experienced any sensation like this on a roller coaster. It was amazing. - Okay. - I was bothering the people into Luca-like screaming. - So I'm so sorry to Luca. - That poor musician. - I know, I feel bad. - That poor surgeon. - Featuring all the screams. - Yeah. - All the other tracks they make. Featuring the screams of guests. - Of guests. - Of guests. - But it was an amazing roller coaster. - Did you pop in just to do Hollywood drift and then pop out? - Just to do that. - That's so fun. - I was like, I'm just going because, again, I'm the kind of person that like literally monitors the construction. I'm this kind of person. - I'm the kind of person. - I'm the kind of person who tells you what kind of person I am. - Yeah, yeah, yeah. - But yeah, no, it was really good. - I love that. I can't wait. Well, I don't know about the drifting. - No, I love it. - Do you love it? - Down the helix or whatever you're describing? - And it's four cars that actually are modeled, like cars from the Fast and Furious movies and they all move differently. - I'm just going to need, I don't know. Okay, that sounds great. I will do it. I can't wait. - You're going to do it. - I'm just going to need. - I'll take you and Johnny when we're allegedly both there. - Sure, I just need every ride to be cosmic rewind. That's what I've realized. - You know, it's not dissimilar to cosmic rewind in that it's, 'cause those cars also drift. - That's fun, that's fun. - Okay, great. - So, I guess it's as-- - It's not like it. - Yeah, you're an 11. - But the essential part of cosmic rewind is, I've just never felt happier than when September and everybody else. - Do you remember? - By the way, do we talk about the Earthward and FireDoc on this? - No, I haven't seen that. - Fabulous. - Do you want to speak on Resident Evil? - Yes, thank you. - So then, before I do that, do you know the themes of the haunted houses for "Horonites" this year? - I don't know them, but I think-- - They didn't weapons last year, right? - Yes, I don't think there's another weapons one. I don't want to make shit up, but I do think they are yet again, sort of leaning into IP. I think it's all that. - Sure. - Classic stuff. Resident Evil, I think this is the path forward for video game adaptations, 'cause it's an original main character. Not, you don't have to go in with any knowledge of the video games. It is about, and the video games themselves are about like improvising through like situations, like, you know, migyvering things into, you know, weapons pulling a shock enough the wall, that's like an iconic,
but you don't have to know that, but it just simulates the emotional experience of the video game, which is what these movies never do, which is what video game movies never do. Like, I think in the past they've done, I'd never saw the old Resident Evil movies with Miss Thing, what was her name? - A Milo Jova Vitch. - Milo, yeah, I never saw those. And I'm like a person. - Answered that like a Japanese question. Who is Milo Jova Vitch? - That's correct. - I, not, you have the board. I just loved that it was about like, 'cause a video game like that, a survival horror video game like that is about just like, gaining competence, gaining knowledge of the situation, which is exactly what the character arc is. And it just ends in the craziest way. - Yeah, I heard it's really sad. - Yeah, it's a, I mean, but in like a foreign, - Jared left the movie like depressed. - Well, I mean, it's ridiculous, it's campy, it's like that's fucking crazy. - Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. - And like that the last shot is like, wow. Okay, he like went for it. - Yeah. - But that's nuts. - It was fun. And I was like, half what you're doing was like, I think Matt would like this. - And then you know what, I appreciate it. - And then it takes a turn and you're like, Matt would hate this. - Okay, so this actually reminds me of something I attempted to watch, which was east of Eden. - Okay. - So I'm just gonna, I'm just gonna, I, first of all, I wanna say this. I am a Zoey Kastan. I, I love Zoey Kastan. I am a Zoey Kastan. Like, I've always loved this divas work. I seriously, I'm into her. But John Steinbeck is not like my favorite thing. And these types of movies aren't my favorite, are series as it were. It's a Netflix series. So what I ended up doing was I did sort of scroll through and whenever I saw Florence Pew, I would watch the Pew. And Mike Feist. Oh, sure. Like, not, not, not saying anything about Christopher Abbott. It just, this one really wasn't really for me, but I was like, I wanted to see the flow Pew. - Yeah, yeah, yeah. - My God, she was good in the parts I watched. - Well, that's one of the most evil characters ever. - I was sensing that from her. I was like, oh, this bitch is evil. - She said her house. - She said her house on fire was a child. - Much more than that. I mean, she's killing everyone. - I'm saying everyone. - She was born. - Yeah. - Kathy with the sea. - And so that, I mean, if you've already used to be, and it's like the people with the sea names are evil, the people with the A names are good. - Is that, can you name them? - It's that. But Kathy is. - Kathy is. - Is demon spawn. - Well, is there anything to the fact that her last name is Aims? - Oh, well, that's what she married into that name, I believe. - Oh, I see. - I haven't read East of Eden since. - High school. - Yeah, yeah, yeah. I didn't even read it in high school. With the Steinbeck that we did was of Mice and Men. - Don't care for that one. - You don't care for that one. - I liked grapes of wrath, just fine. Canary Row, what a gag. - Yeah. - But East of Eden is, she's tough. I have no real desire to watch it as a TV show either. - Well, that's the thing is I was like, I want to know what's going on here. So I actually watched quite a bit of it. Like, is painted black from East of Eden or was that just like a line they put in the, is there's a, it's like a point where like, Kathy gets control of the, I guess, I don't know, whatever they are. Like this barn that they put in. And she looks in and she goes, painted black. And then painted black plays. And I'm like, is that a line from the novel? - I'm not sure. - I remember that. - It was a fun Zoey Kazan thing. - As a Kazan, I should know better. I would have lived in that country. - Zoey Kazan. - Zoey Kazan. - I think, it makes sense that it's successful. It has like the prestige aesthetic of like a Taylor Sheridan thing. - Yeah, I think people love it. I mean, Jared goes, I'm surprised to see it's not doing better with critics. I was like, it doesn't 86% on Rotten Tomatoes. - So great. - And he was like, well, you know, that's, I was like, is it supposed to have like 100? - Interesting. - I don't know. But I will say that Florence is pretty fucking amazing in it. And also Mike is so hot. - Love that. - He's crazy hot. - He's coming for my job. - He is? - Oh yeah, he wants to be Omari. - He wants to be Omari. - He wants to be Omari Todd Lincoln. - I went to Ford's Theater. And that's as much researchers I did. - What did you think? - How did you feel when you stood there and you knew? - I imagined her running to the theater to spoiler alert audition for something. - Do you think that? - Omari is still something we have to say spoiler alert about. - I think so, yes. - Oh, I personally have to. - Well, I think I sometimes forget that I've seen it 15 times or something. - I am always gassed every show when people in the audience gasp at the parts. I'm like, yeah, it's so funny. - Yeah, yeah. - But people do agree, I think it speaks to like the community sort of like, you know, like, everybody like protect it. 'Cause it cause coal rights in the, in the sort of the preface to the show, or if you wanna call it that, they say, the three things are, everyone means what they say. Protect the surprises from the show and the stakes are incredibly high for everybody. But like protect the surprises is like, like the huge pillar of that. - It is interesting to go, when you know to watch it a second time, in particular one character, there's moments in it. - Yes, yes. - That are a little. - Deviant. - Yes. - Well, oh, and quickly I wanna say about Resident Evil, the movie is that, and I believe that character did not play a single Resident Evil game. Like, had no familiarity with it. - Really? - And I think like, he like pitched, through that point of view, like, this is, this is why I'm actually good for this drama. - Yeah, filmically, I will. - Yes, and like, it is, like, because like, there aren't really that many Easter eggs. There's no like references to the games beyond like the big plot points of like, Recon City and whatever, umbrella corporation, umbrella company, whatever. But anyway, it's, I just found it funny that I went to Ford's Theater, and I like walked around DC, and like walked Pat Selinkin's Memorial, and I was like, I'm only thinking of, one of the greatest present in history in terms of his wife, because of this play that I love. - Yeah, I mean, I think of Mary. - Also like, there was a spoiler alert. Actually, no, just cut this part out. It was like, I am, I was like, how does it feel? No, I'm not gonna say that's whatever. Go see it, oh Mary. - Go see it, go see it, go see it, go see it, go see it. - Speaking of, oh, insert woman's name here. Housewives. We have not really talked spoken on Salt Lake City and New York, and I just wanted to say, I'm having fun during Salt Lake. I'm having a great time doing so. Why is all my algorithm on like, TikTok and threads, oh, the parish, the thought, about like, how awful this season is. I'm like, I'm having a blast. - I think that we are at a point where everything is bad online. Like, no, it's no one's happy. - I think approximately 19 people got canceled last week. - Sure. - I was saying to Melissa on the train up here, I'm like, we were like, I think it's at the point where no one is canceled because everyone is canceled. - I think that which is what they, which I think you're like, the evil people wanted. - Well, then Trump is like, they should bomb the fuck out of Los Angeles, and it's like, maybe we redirect our energy. - Damn. - But anyway, just speak on Salt Lake, I think I am understanding Lisa Barlow a lot more. - Yes. - That scene in the first episode with her and John. - Oh. - When like, I feel like, you know what? It's funny because I realized, I don't think we see in the many years she's been on this show. I don't think we started seeing like, really honest moments of her personal life until recently. Like, or at least that's like the perception I have. - Sure. - Well, I think she keeps it very close to the vest. There's a reason why she references her lawyers all the time. That's interesting. - I think she's very protective. - Yeah. - Of her being herself, her moves. - She'll never be seen without makeup. She'll never be seen with this, you know, which is an interesting. - There's a lot of armor. - There's a lot of armor and Lisa, like, drop your weapons. - I think in dropping her weapons this season, I think she's actually kind of like, I think. - She's down for shit because I showed you the tic-dic that you hadn't seen of her in the clubhouse and the "Modern Happens Life" clubhouse. - Oh yeah. - On her knees, praying. - I guess it's a single night. - I pray that my tits sit in right. - And then it cuts out. - No. - She just slips into Nicole Kidman and it works. - And it works for me. - And I just, we just have to, what would you say more about Lisa? - No, just like, and then seeing her on the "Ultima Girls" trip. - Yeah. - And. - She's kind of the winner to you, right? Out of the whole roster. - Out of the girls' trip roster? - Yeah. - Portia is the winner. - For me, Portia is like, no, she's like, an icon. - It's really, and also it's so cool to see her in such a like, actualized place. Like she's not, she really is. I mean, there was like some documentation of like her anger management that she did for a while. She obviously like had a very sort of explosive moment on the show with Kenya all those years ago. And to see her just like, really, really, really sure of who she is and kind of unbothered in that way. Like there was a scene where like, 'cause Luan was completely out of control - The entire season. - Lou.
and I do think it's a little odd that this person that had to literally miss a reunion several years ago to go to rehab is like full on back partying on the show. But that's her journey. I just think as a viewer, it's a little weird. - It's challenging and I anticipate that for Karen Hieger on Potomac the season, but go ahead. - You think she's drinking? Is Karen drinking again on the season? - I think it's a really hard path and I feel like if we can extrapolate the way that we've extrapolated, we can now extrapolate or that we now see with Lou Ann, it's like, she really has to have the intention and I feel like hopefully it's there. I'm just, I'm just conjecturing. I really want the best for you. - I mean, it's all conjecture when it's a reality television program, you know what I mean? Like we're watching this and the narrative of the, of like pretty much the last several episodes of Ultimate Girls Trip at least amongst the cast was Lou Ann can't stop talking over everyone. When she steam rolls every single situation, it's up all the air in the room and is, you know, like down to fucking party. And it gives to me like the woman is peddling a little fast. I'll put it there, be in duck vibes. - She's, she's, it's just, there's a lot of energy she suddenly has. - Oh, I see. - So like, I'm just like, is this okay, you know what I mean? 'Cause it feels a little bit erratic. - Sure. - But I love that Portia was like, 'cause I feel like old Portia would have popped off a lot of times, but Portia was like, you know what? You are, she's like you are being out of control. - I love that. - She was just like you are obnoxious. Like this is the, this is the truth. - You'll Portia. - And I kind of like, you know, like even, and by the way, just to speak on Potomac and Jersey, which is coming back soon. I'm clean slate vibes. - Okay. - I'm clean slate vibes. I'm that means everyone has a chance. If people can put things behind them, so can I? I'm going in clean slate vibes. That's even means with Giselle. - Hell hath frozen over. - Well, if I am giving that woman a clean slate. - I'm giving, I'm giving in clean slate. I am, I, because the thing is, this show is about conflict and resolution. We have to find that within ourselves. - And yet there are people who you cannot reason with. - I would actually count Teresa Drew Dice among those people. - However, after seeing Ultimate Girls Trip, I liked Teresa on the season. I feel like her whole thing is when she feels attacked and I think the mortal wound of Teresa on New Jersey is that Melissa came on the show without telling her, without asking her or whatever. And in the finale of Ultimate Girls Trip, Andy like soft moderates a conversation between Melissa and Teresa who are, quote unquote, better now. And you see that it's still, it's still not something that Teresa can really let go of. - And I just don't wanna watch more of them fighting. Or if it is more of that, it needs to be in a more, in a new dimension as you've just said, it is a show about conflict and resolution. - Yeah, we must move on. So that's my plan. - Lisa, we should tell them about our new show. - Oh my God, Lexi, we have a new podcast. I'm Lexi, you want to wear two bus friends, 22 years apart, but so close at heart. And I'm Lisa de Giulio, the old one, which means we have wildly different references, occasionally different opinions. - I'm not gonna get any of your fighting. - That is wild. - Don't lie to me. - Don't lie to me. - Don't lie to me. - Lie. I don't really care. - I'm Hamza. - And I'm Martin. - And we're the hosts of Out of Character. It's a podcast, I know. There's a lot of them to listen to these days. How are you gonna get to us? Well, there's a specific reason why you should listen to us. - We are the best podcast in the entire world. I swear. - I know, bold. But why don't we list some of the things we might talk about on a regular episode? So sometimes we'll talk about, I don't know, the Uber driver we just had. - And how nice they were, or if we tip them or not, come and find out. Sometimes we'll talk about that weird news story from last week. It's the one you're thinking about, trust me. Or maybe we'll talk about music and what's happening in the underground, or drama and music, or TV shows, or the Medgala and what the actors wore. This is like, Angie with the scroll. This is like Angie with the face shield. It's like, this is Angie loves a prop and she loves the spectacle with the scroll. She loves, like, it's, it's Angie. - I love the way she walks through what she's done. - Well, Quay, I heard that you took your man's toothbrush and rimmed it around the toilet side. - So I just thought, why not bring a toothbrush for everyone? Like, it's like, I love the way she lays it on so thick, like as if, I love it. She's perfect, she shouldn't change a thing. - She should do everything. - And she, she is confiding to people that she is having a tough season and she does not, she is sort of bracing herself because, you know, she goes through marital problems. - Yeah. - And perhaps she and Mary, I'm Kati, who we can speak about, are not on great terms anymore. But, I reached out to Angie directly. - I read the text for the first episode. I was like, Angie, I don't, I know things are a little bit different now in terms of friendships, but I think the way you showed up for Mary in this really hard moment for her speaks to your beautiful humanity and you're just an incredible person to me. And I know you're having a hard time right now. I texted her the day that it was reported that she and Sean were getting a divorce. I texted her the day I go, no need to respond, Angie. I just want you to know nothing about this changes the fact that you are someone who shows up for family always. And I love you and I'm sending you love, no need to respond to you. Response two weeks later to you goes, I'm finally coming up for air. I love you, though, and I'm back to school shopping with the Electra. of East of Eden. - It's the opposite of East of Eden, but she has an A name, and I have a B name. - Yeah, yeah. (laughing) - But I went into, 'cause I was her first watch what happens live, sort of co-guess. - Yes, yes. - That was when she was early days, and I was like, "I don't know about this. " - People didn't know about Angie Kale. - People didn't know about Angie Kale. - Because she had a weird first season as a friend. - And I love, and I still love Meredith. - I love Meredith. - Love Meredith. - You need Meredith. - You need Meredith, and she was really getting Meredith's, grinding Meredith's, getting gears. And I was like, "I need to, you know, "my loyalty is stand with Meredith." And the way she was so vulnerable with me and so nervous about it being her first, like, you know, watch what happens live appearance. - Yeah. - I was like, "Oh my God, we love you." I was like, "I can't help but love you, this person." - Also, like, my favorite thing. I mean, when we did the Cultural Awards the first year, we were just showing up to the hotel, and just Heather Gaye and Angie Katseneva's coming in, like, fresh-off, fresh-off, fire. Just like, "Oh my God, we're so excited," et cetera. But I do wanna say something to Heather Gaye. - All right, former guest of the show. - I think that Heather is one of my favorites forever. I love Heather, and there's ups and downs, but I think there's also ups and downs with humans, so it's okay. - There you go. - I think Heather needs to realize she is now the big dog. Heather is, I think Heather, for a very long time, has probably felt like-- - Underdoggy. - Underdoggy, and someone like Lisa Barlow could bully her, that can't happen anymore. Like, I think that, unfortunately, the rules, or fortunately, depending on how you just look at it, like the ultimate girls' trip stuff, and the way that Heather came in being, like, I feel bad, like, it's giving a little bit, like, alpha behavior without maybe realizing it. I don't think that Heather is, - And you were close to an underdog anymore? - No, I don't think so, and it's behavioral and relational shifts in status that, like, we can all see plainly. - Yeah, I mean, I think she's not aware of herself. - Yeah, I think that, and I think that, like, it's just, it's gotta be weird when that sort of been, like, unnarrative for you, is like, I am the person who has been unsung my entire life. I am finally learning. And then you get, like, the fans all kind of, like, pick you as, like, you know, the center of the show, et cetera. And, 'cause it was rough for Lisa Barlow the first couple of seasons. I remember that first reunion, like, that the first two seasons, it was like, she clearly expected it to go a different way and to be the fan favorite, and she would ultimately become, I think they're all fan favorites at this point. - This is what happens when you get the Rihanna follow. Literally, Heather got the Rihanna follow season one. Um, I agree with you about Heather. Love Meredith, her face looks amazing. The eyebrows are blocky, and I don't mean that, and, you know, and I'm just saying they're literally blocks. I love one Whitney goes. - I feel like it's amazing that Meredith is telling us about her new face and her wig. - Oh, not a wig, not a wig. - Not a wig? - No, the producer goes, she hasn't told anyone, she hasn't said that it's a wig. - Oh, Whitney being Whitney. - I gotta say, I have a lot of grace for Whitney. - I love Whitney. - I love every single person on that cat. - Me too. - Ronwyn is chafing me a little bit because the lies are a little bit more plain this season, and I still love her, and I've come a long way with Ronwyn. - I really appreciate Ronwyn. - I appreciate Ronwyn, and I'm happy she's on this journey. - Center snowflake. - And Quai, a lot of promise. - Yeah. - I'm very passionate with Quai. Miriam Cosby, yeah. - Do you remember how ahead of the curve we were? - When our second day of culture on our Christmas episodes was Miriam Cosby, the world stage. - That was only after the first season of Salt Lake. - That was 2020. - Sometimes, every time we get it right. (laughing) - Period. - Let's move over to Roni. - Yeah, I love Roni this year. - Well, I think the new girls are stronger. So strong, I feel like, Jessal, I think, does it, everyone's saying she's the new Ramona or Sonia where she's just clueless and ditzy? I think it's missing something. I think Jessal just doesn't know anything about anything in a way that's like a little. - And then it's like, you know, classists in her way pretty overtly where I'm like, "All right, you gotta balance it out with some of them." - It is like her elitism and ignorance were sort of the thing that established her character, but now it kind of just becomes like, do you care about anyone else? There is that vibe and like, for her to be, to be so double down on the Carolyn Bassett thing, it's like, babe, cut it out. - I gotta say, like, so it's the Carolyn Bassett thing, right? And it's also like the Epstein thing, apparently sigh, like kind of goes in on Carol later in the season about Epstein. - Or in the season about Epstein. - And my thing is like, when you're saying that, what are you saying? Like, what is the insinuation there? That Carol was like, was involved, that Carol knew and didn't do anything? Like when you're saying like, you knew Epstein on this reality show. - Like, okay, yes, it's a fact. - It's insendier. I think that's all, I don't think sigh is thinking you had, 'cause I don't, I don't know, I don't think sigh like has that sort of presence to really like chart her course on this show. I don't think she knows what her place is. - I think, I honestly think, well, well, it was funny because her first episode was literally her being like, so the first two seasons have pretty much everything I've been telling you is fraud. - Right. - Like, my husband is not retired, he just doesn't work. I was attacking Jussel because I was jealous, et cetera. So it's like, when you establish that you are someone who is not truthful, and that again becomes like a grounding thing in your character. Of course, I obviously know her life must have been difficult because she was in love with this man, I had kids with this man who was just kind of like, wasn't putting effort into any aspect of his life. - Right, and she's the breadwinner. - And she's the breadwinner. Obviously, that's frustrating, and then you get this opportunity and you're not just gonna say that, but you kind of like built a whole thing around attacking other people's marriages. So for you to now say, hey, it's just because mine was a total sham. It's like, well, we can't necessarily trust anything else that you say, or that you're attacking people in good faith. So when she whips out Epstein, which I have such a problem with people just cavalierly whipping that around, like it's not gonna trigger the many women and gay men that like watch this shit. Like, what are you saying when you say that? - I think maybe to give her benefit of doubt, it's like, Carol has this like proximity to like billionaire class, old money. - Totally. - Which fine, but like, do you think that's what Sai is arguing? I don't. I think she wanted to say something explosive on a reality show. - Which is also what hasn't happened yet. It's just the buzz that I hear. - But I'm just saying, I know it gets brought up. - Right. But with Sai, Aaron, and Jussel, it's like they are all three of them kind of flailing a bit, like Aaron going after Haley. - Oh, that was really uncomfortable for you guys. - Yeah, also obsessed with her. - I love Haley. Oh yeah, I'm obsessed with Daisy. - Love Daisy. - I just love that. Just a green flag that she has like an Asian husband. - Literally, I was like, I was like, I love Daisy again. That was the first thing you said. And I was just like, that, like. - The more the steward of it all. - Also like, the, you know, where she had her satire. - Fabulous. - Yeah, it felt very like old Rooney to me. - Old Rooney. It felt like, it felt to me like, oh yeah, we're like, you know, we're at like an authentic, it felt very New York girl. - It's so real that we were just missing the humor. - Absolute, like they weren't funny. - No, you know what? Like, I will give them this. I think that Aaron is a good talking head. I think she, she was walking down the street like complaining to her husband and I was laughing. Because I was like, her first scene in the show was like, I don't know what the fuck. And then I was like, that is how a New York woman talks to her husband on the phone, I love you by. Like that, I get. So I legibly, I'm laughing because I feel like I understand it. - Sure, sure, sure. - For me, it's like the strongest are. - The New Girls. - The New Girls and Carol. - Carol immediately establishing. - Immediately the star. - The star, love that she's teaching the masses about sort of switching sides and parking. - Yeah, New York shit. - That's New York shit. - Yeah, like, and honestly, just pretty much everything about, and it's not even that I think she harkens back to the old Roni, you know what I loved? I was when she said to Aaron, like, you're not gonna get sympathy from me. - I love that. - She was like, that was crazy what you did. - So they needed to stop talking at that gala during the auction. - Yeah. - Like quiet. - Yeah, it's time for quiet. - It's time for quiet. - No, I just, yeah, I just think the three sort of middle girls in the sandwich, women, housewives in the sandwich are like, just, they're doing too much. And just so, it's just getting a little old. I'm just, I just don't. I need something compelling to watch in the story and if you can't provide that, then that's too bad. - She's done it so many times, too. - Well, yeah, but then even like this stuff with her husband, I'm like, okay, so this guy is ex-Tech Bro, who was always a little grating. - Oh, he's, if he, in terms of like, really tough for me. - He's like,
- He's like an Elon Stan. - Right. - And but now he wants a transition to like food influencing and restaurants. And I'm like, this is just, I don't think any of these women's husbands really work. Did anyone think that maybe that's why they're on the show? - Oh! - Like, come on, I mean, like, at a certain point, it's like, the dominoes just fall. - The dominoes just fall. I don't know, yeah, Aaron, yeah, what does Abe do? - Is he a, is he a lawyer? - I don't know. There's a memory that's okay, what else? - Okay, I was gonna go see Verity, right? - Yeah. - Then I go on Instagram, immediately the Swiss dispoiled. I don't know how someone just got like into the theater, literally recorded, saying audience behavior is. - And then I thought, maybe that's way bigger of a reason why the box office is, and that movie did well. I mean, it got number one. But for example, I probably could have done better. Like, I probably would have gone to the theater to go see it if it wasn't ruined for me, just scrolling. There's a moment at the end where it kind of reveals something about Anne Hathaway's character, Verity. And like, I knew this because I was aware of the book. But when I saw it, I was just like, - Whoa! - I already didn't have a lot of time. And I was like, I don't know. Now I just like literally saw the climax of the movie. And then I thought, like, it sort of goes hand in hand with marketing, right? It's like, 'cause then I was thinking about Digger. - Yeah. - So, I didn't know this movie cost almost $180 million. - It stands to, yeah, lose 150, yeah. - Because it made only $8 million, I guess it's opening weekend. And then I thought, who actually thought that this, like, sort of experimental movie about climate change, like by Injury Too, who's like a very challenging filmmaker, like obviously a decorated filmmaker, but not necessarily known for Big Box Office. I don't think a general population really knows his name. It's not like that. - All chips were in on just it being Tom Cruise. - Right, but there's something different about Tom Cruise as a draw when you've completely covered him in prosthetics and put him in a challenging film. - And marketed the film in a way that is like, see for yourself, we know our reviews are mid, but see for yourself, it's not what you think it is, and then you go and it's like, oh, wait, why did this cost? Why a political satire should not cost more than, I'm gonna say 20 generously 30 million. - I'm sorry, does anyone think it's weird that a political satire about climate change costs 180 million dollars? What are we talking about? And then it pisses me off even more because they consider everything else a fucking risk. - Well, the execs who are allegedly professionals at assessing risk are people who see digger as something that is like a sure thing because it's like, I don't know. - How could you ever think that? - It's because not to make it about this, but it is about the makeup of those execs being mostly white and male. - 100%. And my other thing is, I remember a few years ago, when Cord Jefferson won the Oscar for American Fiction, he was like, please, make 10 movies for 10 million dollars instead of one for 100 million dollars, and that has proven true time and time again. And this is another Oscar winner that I guess we're disregarding for whatever reasons you just wanted to disregard him. - Can you read it, you mean? - No, Cord Jefferson. He's like an incredible filmmaker with a better point than anyone made at that show, anyone has made, probably the best Oscar speech. I would say that and Michaela Coles. - Emmy speech. - Yes, yes. - We're like the best speeches I've seen, actually speaking to issues regarding art and commerce and the human spirit and the way you refuel and the way you put things out there in the world. And then I just can't get over that it's about climate change and cost that much money, it's insane. - Yeah, tough. And it was supposed to be, and like, yeah, Tom's had a tough year, I would say. - What else happened with Tom? - I just think the GQ spread was like much more mine. - See, that's the thing too, is it's like if you're gonna put your lead actor out there, like PR should be looking at what he's doing and wonder does this track. - Right. - I mean, like, unfortunately for Tom Cruise, he now has a very, let's call it a very polarizing reputation. - Uh-huh. - So, perchance, people are not seeing Top Gun Maverick because of Tom Cruise, they're seeing it because it's Top Gun and it got incredible reviews. - And it's a nostalgia thing. - Exactly. - Which can still work, and it has this new crop. - And it has this new crop of stars. - Exactly, it had Glenn Powell, it had, I believe, not I don't think people were going for these other people. - No, but I was like, I said-- - Yeah, you know, you get the younger people to go, oh, they don't care for Tom Cruise, but who go, oh yeah, that guy from that movie. Like, I just wonder, they let Injury to make this movie. He's obviously got two best director Oscar wins. He's an extremely talented person, but it feels like way too big a swing to make any sense at all. So you were bought and paid for forever. And then you just moved to another network where you were bought and paid for. (laughs) - Grifter. - Grifter. - Sean Ryan show. I don't know who that is. - Oh, no. - The toast, I actually like the toast. - Okay.
