"I'm afraid what might happen if I relax" and stanning Huberman
from The Vet Empowered Podcast
34m 11s
The podcast episode centers on the cultural divide over candy corn, a Halloween staple that evokes both nostalgia and disgust. While 56% of listeners love it for its sentimental ties to childhood, 44% despise it due to its texture and taste. The candy’s origins in agricultural marketing as “chicken feed” are explored, and its popularity is tied to three U.S. states: Utah, North Dakota, and Maryland. The conversation expands to broader themes of health misinformation, with a segment from the American Medical Association debunking wellness trends. The show also features sponsor-driven discussions on eczema treatment (DuPixant), kitchen essentials (McCormick seasonings), financial rewards (Bank of America), and household cleaning (OxyClean). Through personal anecdotes and regional data, the episode underscores how shared experiences—like eating candy or watching old horror films—create emotional connections. It concludes by emphasizing the importance of human-centered decision-making in health and daily life, urging listeners to rely on trusted experts over viral trends. The tone remains conversational and reflective, blending humor with insight into consumer culture and emotional memory.

- I turned off news altogether.
I hate to say it, but I don't trust much of anything.
- It's the rage beat.
- It feels like it's trying to divide people.
- We got clear facts.
Maybe we can calm down a little.
- NBC News brings you clear reporting.
Let's meet at the facts.
Let's move forward from there.
NBC News reporting for America.
(upbeat music)
- Hey there, folks, we have made it to Halloween.
Yes, today is Saturday, October 31st.
And these are two of the most divisive, provocative
and incendiary words you will hear.
All of the Halloween season.
One of those two words, candy corn.
And with that, welcome to this episode of Amy and TJ.
Say it and there's only one response you're gonna get.
Love it or hate it.
What is your response?
- Love it, really.
- I loved it as a kid.
I don't know as an adult that my palette has changed,
but I know as a kid.
Look, we didn't, well, that's not true.
My mom loved candy.
In fact, people called our home Willi Wank
as a chocolate factory.
But in Halloween, like the month of October,
I always felt like there were little bowls
around our house with candy corn in it.
And I would just nibble on it throughout the day.
- You don't remember as an adult nibbling on this stuff?
- Maybe as a young adult.
Not recently.
- And you make, you sound as if you're suggesting
that maybe you've grown out of it.
So today, as you sit here,
you don't know if you hate it or love it.
You don't know if I had a bowl of candy corn sitting
right here, you wouldn't start snacking.
- I'd have a couple.
- You would.
- I would, I would.
- You'd have a couple just for old time's sake.
And look, it's one of those candies
that, yeah, it's kind of disgusting
and yet it takes you back to--
- It's kind of disgusting.
- It takes you back to wonderful childhood memories.
- You make a very good point
and that is one of the things people love about it.
And it's one of the top things nostalgia.
- Yes. - Right, before they even get into
what it tastes like and what it feels like
and the tech, nostalgia, it takes them back.
- It takes me back to my childhood.
When I, here's the deal, if I imagine a glass bowl
filled with candy corn, it makes me smile.
It just does.
- It doesn't make me feel that way.
- So you're taking on candy corn?
- Get it away.
- Always hated it.
- Always, every time I hate it.
- I love the texture of it too.
- And that's, it's a wax, it's wax.
It's hard, caramelized, it's a wax.
- I like it.
- It's not firm enough to be what candy should be
but it's not soft enough to be what something it is.
- It's perfect, it's just right.
- It is just awful stuff.
How do you eat it?
Because there are even surveys about
how you're supposed to eat it.
- Eat stripe.
- Oh.
- Yes, I like to nibble.
Little stripe, little stripe.
And I always wanted to see if one tasted different
than the other, but they didn't.
- Okay, I have another question here.
Then you were never a person to,
is that crazy to pop the whole thing in mouth to eat it?
- Oh yeah, every now and then I would,
but it would be fun, I'd like to just sit there.
I remember just like having it
'cause I wanted to savor it, I wanted it to last.
You can't eat many of them.
You'll get sick as all get out if you eat too many.
So if you eat them slowly, stripe by stripe,
you can paste yourself.
- Then I know you don't know for sure,
but just just spitball here.
How many would you say is too much?
How many pieces of candy corn before?
- More than 10.
- Damn, how you get to 10?
I have a hard time consuming one of those things.
- I can eat a lot more than 10.
- They're almost in the avocado section for me.
- So yeah, I love avocado.
- See, and you know what, that reads.
- So here we go.
Now, I didn't realize there was a national candy corn day.
It was October 30th, did you know?
I didn't know. - I didn't know.
- Okay, I'm sorry.
- It was a day for everything though,
I've come to learn.
- If I was on the outs, I didn't know,
but yes, they'd have their own day.
Now, let's give you this, I was surprised.
I shouldn't have said that, I'm giving it away.
But the breakdown is 56 to 44%
when it comes to people loving and hating.
- Wow. - I was surprised to see
which one was the love it?
- 56.
- And which ones was the hate it?
- See, I'm not surprised.
- There are more people that say they love
the candy corn than hate it.
- Yes, because it takes them back to their childhood.
- And nasty-ass childhood of nasty candy.
That is, okay, is that the number one thing for you
or the taste is up there for you?
- What do you mean the nostalgia?
- The nostalgia part.
- I think it currently gets the number one reason.
- Okay. - I like it, yes.
But I also like the texture.
And I also like, I could have three and be like,
that was good and I don't need anymore.
- Okay, there's a thing, and I kind of get
what you're saying, candy canes.
I can't remember the last time I ate a candy cane,
but I love seeing them around the holidays.
- Yes.
- I love seeing them so--
- That's a very good, yes.
- I got you, you just have to buy it.
It has to be there, has to be in the house.
- I like seeing them in the old bowls.
That comes out, we don't have any.
- Hey, hey, I got you.
Did you know they make all kind, like a Christmas version?
- Yeah, I don't like that.
- Blueberry. - No, that a noise.
- Caramel.
- I don't like the other colors.
- Why?
- Yeah, 'cause it's, you know, the colors are the flavor.
- Oh, I don't know what they taste like
'cause I refuse to buy anything that isn't the original.
I've never tried the other ones,
but I've seen them in the stores
and it feels like an affront to a memory.
Like do not start messing with perfection.
- Perfection is what you call these things.
- Okay, Robes, you said they all taste the same,
but your nostalgia thing is getting to me now
to where you are turned off by the idea
of one being another color.
- Don't want to eat any other color.
- Like a little more pissed than I thought you should.
- I actually built my chest type.
- Yeah, that is nostalgia for you.
- Don't mess with something that I love
that takes me back.
We were just watching 'cause it's Halloween,
well, it doesn't matter that it's Halloween.
We always have a horror movie playing,
but you had, was it one of the Nightmare on Elm Street?
I was trying to remember which one it was, yes.
But there was just '80s music playing.
And you're like, do you know the song?
I'm like, no, but obviously it sounds like
Duran Duran-ish-esque.
And just any time you have something, music,
a flavor, a taste, whatever that takes you back
to a time where you were carefree
and we're looking forward to what was next in your life.
I don't know, just there's a moment in time
that Candy Corn encapsulates as does music, yes.
- And just lets you know what you say, that music,
that movie that we happen to be watching, yes,
we are ridiculous horror movie folks to point out, Robes.
You don't even realize what movie we were watching it.
- I don't.
- It was Friday the 13th part eight.
Jason Takes Manhattan, and so the music was on
and that movie came out in 1989.
- Oh my gosh, see, I knew it.
I was like, really, do you know this song?
I'm like, no, but it's clearly a classic 1980s sound
with the synthetics and I just love it.
So yes, much like Candy Corn.
- So the funny part of Candy Corn
is that people love it and hate it for the same reasons.
People love it because of the nostalgia
and some of us get annoyed about it
because of the nostalgia.
Oh God, how the leans come here.
I gotta see this stuff everywhere.
So people have the exact, they quote the exact same things
for loving and hating it.
Texture, you love it.
I absolutely hate it.
How it feels, waxing, biting into it.
Make up your mind.
And then the sweetness, people love that it's just,
just,
Hit. You only need to do. It's too much. This is from me. It's too much sweetness.
We went back, here we go, doing a deep dive on candy corn. Rolls 1880s. Who has this
got George Rininger? He worked at a candy company in, where was this Philadelphia?
Wonderly candy company, but he is the guy that is credited with just coming up with this
and they were the first to start selling it. Now they didn't make it popular. The Wonderly
candy company. There was another one called the Golitz or Galitz. Is it Galitz?
I don't know if it's German, usually the E, it might be Galitz.
Galitz candy company. They're the jelly bean brand company. They have a new name now.
But they popularized it rose because in 1898, they took the recipe that Mr. Rininger put
together and they started packaging it and selling it with a different name. I had never
heard this before. Would you buy chicken feet? No. For your Halloween candy. Sounds like
some crap you'd feed to chickens who, yeah, that's not appetizing.
Okay, but you have nailed exactly why it became popular because at the time, corn was
a snack for your chickens. It wasn't something associated necessarily with Americans and eating,
so we had a huge farming community. They were throwing chicken feet out. So they came
up with agriculture themed candies to give to kids to make popular in these rural areas.
That's cute. What the hell? Who knew? It's funny because I grew up eating, when I
think of eating candy corn, I think of where we lived right outside of St. Louis, Missouri.
So we were right there in the middle. We had farmlands all around us. I'm eating candy
I mean, that reads. But they marketed it initially just agriculture themed stuff and they
called it chicken feed. It's how it started. You have any idea what's in the stuff? Just
sugar. I mean, I would just think sugar, like corn syrup, all the things are terrible
for you. Red dye number, whatever. I don't know. But everything that's probably banned
or that I guess our health and human services secretary would completely take off the shelves
of be good. Can you tell me what fondant is? I've heard of it. It's in there. I didn't
know what it was. It's some kind of icing of some kind. Oh, yeah, that is what it is.
Am I saying it right? I've never heard of it. Okay. Well, the original recipe, yes,
it's had everything you talk about sugar, corn syrup, whatever else. But they cooked it
to a slush kind of a thing. And then they put in fondant and marshmallows. This is
still all appetizing to you. Yummy icing and marshmallows and corn syrup and sugar.
What's bad about that? I mean, it's bad for you. Okay, there it is. It tastes great though.
But that's how it all came about. Are we going to get any of this stuff today? Because
this is our last chance. I've had any. Here's the truth. Since you just started talking
about it, I was having a little nostalgia for it. But I don't want it in the house if
no one else is going to eat it. That's the problem. We had a few trick-or-treaters last
year. And I just realized we have no candy in our house right now. And in case we have
some, I guess. So I do need, we do need to go out and get a little bit of candy today
just in case. They're having a Halloween party somewhere in the building. So maybe they're
doing that instead of having trick-or-treaters, but we should just have some in case.
They didn't give us a sign. They usually let us know if kids are going to be good. I did
get a notice that we're having a Halloween party. Are we going? Okay, yeah.
All right. Well, but stay here folks. Would you believe with all this back and forth, there
are a few key and strange states that make candy corn the most popular in their stick robes?
That's, that reads. I get that. You think that's, I'm shocked that any one of the 50 states
could vote candy corn as the most popular. Yeah, because it is probably the candy that
is most directly tied to Halloween than any other. Like in terms of what is a Halloween
themed candy candy corn? You don't need candy corn in July. You don't need candy corn
in March. I say thanks to him as the only maybe, many times, so it is specifically associated
with this time of year. So that makes sense to me. All right, we'll stay here. We'll
let you know if you're in one of these three crazy states. I think candy corn is the
number one candy out there. Also, we'll give you the results from candystore.com. What
exactly are the most hated Halloween candies and what are the most loved Halloween candies
this year?

Welcome back everyone on this Halloween Saturday. You're listening to Amy and TJ, and we are
debating apparently the candy that has divided this nation. No, we think the midterm
elections are dividing folks from a political standpoint. No, look no further than candy
corn. And yes, even in this household, we are a home divided. It's a weird, it's one
of those things to, we could probably come up with a few other things that I hear somebody
likes it. And I actually think what's wrong with that person.
Do you think something's wrong with me? Yeah, like our horror movies. People look at us.
People think something's wrong with you. Okay, so that's how you're making me feel
right now. That's something's wrong with you. But I'm, it's one of those things I cannot
understand how I feel like that when you eat frog legs. So like the same way I feel
about you watching frog legs. Anything that's a delicacy is disgusting. Delicacy equals
disgusting. Anyway, we were going crazy. We, that would be you. I did have, I did have
some caviar. I tried to expand my palate, but that was actually pretty good. You know,
usually everybody, this is just a, this is a normal restaurant that just had a few. Oh,
my God, that sounded awful. It's like a neighborhood restaurant that it had like a tasting
So we just got a little
adventurous. That was our big Halloween outing, but yes, I don't know. I tried a little
of the caviar, but not the Oscar. And then we talked it off with a bottle of yes, no.
Let's get back to candy corn. Okay, let's get back to our roots of candy corn. Yes,
candy store.com does have a list. Every state, most popular candies, only three robes,
list candy corn as the most popular according to the survey in those states. Do these states read
for you? That's kind of random. I would have thought it was more the Midwest. I would have
thought more like candy, Missouri, like where I grew up or spent a lot of my childhood. Utah,
North Dakota, and Maryland. Maryland is really of this R1. I don't know why I have an idea of
what state, but I would think just the Midwest. I don't know. I don't know corn. I don't know
farm agriculture. Iowa. I mean, why not Iowa? Iowans, like anything with corn in it, right? North
Dakota. I mean, that's next to Iowa, isn't it? I think. Oh, boy. No, I'm sorry. I asked
a question now. Yeah, if I was looking at a map, I could answer that, but no. Side unseen,
I cannot tell you. All right. So those three states, let's tell you, Instacart has their own
list as well. This is just frankly, what was sold most in the month of October? This is what
Instacart has actual numbers on. These are the things that were bought and sold most. This is a
pretty. This makes sense. This is mainstream popular type candy. Do the Instacart has to go.
Oh, yeah. I'll start here. Number one, on that list, Reese's peanut buttercups. You like those?
I love Reese's peanut buttercups. All right. After that, peanut, M&M's in particular.
Why do my absolute favorites? Really? Yes. I mean, her. She's milk chocolate. People just
like chocolate bars and then M&Ms. Well, you're not a fan of milk chocolate. No, I like dark chocolate.
All right. Number five in the list. Snickers is not going anywhere. Kit Kat. Love a Kit Kat.
Really? Oh, I was so excited when I got a Kit Kat. Oh, my gosh. Peanut buttercups and Kit Kat.
If I got and peanut M&Ms, so good. All right. Well, after that, I think sour patch kids might
be the best candy on the market. They're amazing. They're kind of a problem. I love actually
Annelise basically like grew in my womb on nothing but sour patch kids. I was so nauseated that
that was the one thing I could eat all day long. That's just a special mix and a blend and how
they get those flavors right. Go from that sour to that sweet. That's an amazing candy.
You're so good. After that, you got the hair bow gummy bears. Yum.
Those are fantastic and after that, skittles and twigs round out. Oh, twigs.
That's a good thing. Twigs is so good. Are they still doing the left twigs, right? Twigs
thing? I never really understood that. They tried that before. I didn't either. I was like, I just
eat both of them. I'm confused. Now, what's not on the list, which I'm very upset about?
This is also nostalgic and this is actually a fun fact. You and I, as we were getting to know
each other as friends over the years, we realized we had so many bizarre similarities and I remember
being on set with you at Good Morning America. We just said somehow we started talking about our
favorite candy bar and you're not even a chocolate guy. At all. But you and I said my favorite
all-time hands down, no question, candy bar ever, the hundred grand bar and you literally
your draw dropped. It's the only candy bar like him. I like it. It is so good. It is the only one.
It's fantastic. You can't find it everywhere. But the hundred grand bar and in Halloween,
the little red, the packaging and the little one, when I got those, I would hoard them.
I would save them. I would save for them and they would even get stale because I was trying
to make them last. That's how much I love them. They're so rich and delicious. The smaller ones
are better bites than having the bigger ones. Yeah, hundred grand bars. Yeah, fan. That's what we
should just go get a big bag of hundred grand bars and then that's the only candy we hand out.
I think we should get candy corn. Okay. Because when it's left over, I know I won't be eating it.
Don't have to worry about a thing. We'll give you these last two here. The most the most love,
the most hated Halloween candy. This is from candystore.com. Take whichever list you want.
All right. We'll continue on with the best from candy store. I think that the worst is the
funniest. All right. The best from candystore.com. Number one, Snickers. I was never a fan.
Too heavy, man. Exactly. It was always heavy. I mean, I love no get, but I'm still trying to figure
out. I'm not really sure what to do. No get a new get a new get number two Reese's peanut buttercups.
Yes, love that. Oh, I do like number three, the nerd gummy clusters. Yeah, but I love nerds.
Oh, my god. The little nerds boxes. The grape and the strawberry. That was always my favorite.
Yummy. Number four M&Ms. Number five Sour Patch Kids. Number six Kit Katz. Number seven. This is
strange hot tamales. That is one of my friends. Between that and Mike and I. Oh, I do like that.
Fantastic. What are bugs? Number eight. Never. And it's all in all caps. It's a couple of
B. You looked it up. I didn't take the time. You know what? Number nine twigs and number 10. Oh my
god. I was going to tell you my most hated, my most hated Halloween candies. And it just came
in at number 10 as the best Halloween candy. Butterfinger. I hate this. Is that a peanut butter?
It's like a orangey crusty peanut butter thingy. It flakes up a lot. I hate it. There was something
about it that made me gag to each. Here's her own. Sorry. Butterfinger people. We are not. You know,
it's wonderful candy. My mom. It is her favorite candy. That the two. My mom's two favorites are
Butterfingers. And what's the other one that I hate? Butterfingers and baby Ruth. I hate those.
Those are my mom's favorites. I remember what I would get the Halloween candy. You dump it out.
You trade with your brother or your sister. I would give my mom all the Butterfingers and all the
baby Ruth's because I hated them. There's a couple on the worst list here. I don't know. Number five
and number seven. I actually don't know it all. I don't either. No. Okay. Number one most hated
Halloween candy. Again, this is from candy store.com. This is based on a survey. Not sales, but they
asked people what is your most or least favorite Halloween candy. This is the answer. This
isn't embarrassing to me because the top two I love candy corn is the number one most hated
Halloween candy. And number two, we used to buy these in my family by the like constantly circus
peanuts. I hate it more. I love those. I love the texture. I love the taste. It's so
artificial, but I loved it. They have a worse texture than a candy corn. I love. You should use
those to like prop up tables that don't sit evenly on the ground. There's a weird spongy.
Where they taste like? Like delicious marshmallow-y something. I love them.
Honestly, the texture makes me happy. It's almost like okay. You know when people have the stress,
the little stress balls. To me, that's what a circus peanut is for my mouth. You're not
supposed to eat that. Nobody gives me that same like I love this circus peanut. This was my
most hated. The peanut butter kisses. Those were the candies. I don't know it by its name,
but they were in the waxy orange and black. Kisses. With a regular chocolate kiss. I don't know
there was a peanut butter one. I remember the peanut butter kisses. I thought were the ones.
Remember it was like a peanut butter flavored taffy that was in an orange waxy and it was
tad twists on the end and the black. I came in orange and black. We were talking about you're
100% right. I know what you're talking about. I hated those. I'm like, what are these? They
didn't have a name on them. Those little things. Yeah. They didn't have a name on them and people
would just, you know, you'd go and you'd see it in the basket. You're like, oh, you try to avoid
getting them because they taste disgusting. I thought what I thought it was a Hershey's kiss that
they made in a peanut butter. No, I got you now. Those are the white and you only see them in
Halloween and orange and black wax. Those were awful. Peeps. I didn't know they made Halloween

The episode explores the divided public sentiment around candy corn, with 56% of people loving it for nostalgic childhood memories and 44% hating it for its texture and taste.
Candy corn originated in the 1880s as an agricultural-themed snack marketed as "chicken feed," later popularized by the Galitz candy company, and is now most popular in three U.S. states: Utah, North Dakota, and Maryland.
Despite its divisive status, candy corn is uniquely tied to Halloween, making it the most Halloween-specific candy, while other popular treats like Reese’s, M&Ms, and Sour Patch Kids dominate in sales and consumer preference.
The show highlights a broader cultural debate over health trends, featuring the American Medical Association and Trace Dominguez debunking wellness myths to separate fact from hype.
Several sponsors are featured, including Regeneron promoting DuPixant for severe eczema, McCormick introducing new signature seasonings, and Bank of America promoting its B.A.V. Awards rewards program.
A recurring theme is the value of human connection, exemplified through the discussion of receptionists and the emotional impact of nostalgia in food and media.
The episode also touches on consumer habits, revealing that some of the most despised Halloween candies—like peanut butter kisses and circus peanuts—are disliked for artificial taste and texture.
