I Drank 30 Tablespoons of Olive Oil in 10 Days… Here’s What Happened to My Belly Fat, Cravings, Energy & Inflammation With Ben Azadi | #1309

The speaker conducted a 10-day experiment consuming 3 tablespoons of high-polyphenol extra virgin olive oil daily, spaced between meals. Initially, he experienced bloating and discomfort on days 1-2 as his digestive system adapted. By day 3, he felt increased energy, lost 2.5 pounds, and noticed reduced puffiness and a looser waistband. His appetite and cravings diminished significantly, and his joints felt less inflamed by day 5. By day 10, he had lost 5.8 pounds and 1.5 inches from his waist, with improved sleep quality. The key mechanism is oleocanthal, which mimics ibuprofen’s anti-inflammatory action without side effects, and the oil’s ability to slow gastric emptying, lower post-meal blood sugar spikes, and enhance satiety hormones like GLP-1. The speaker emphasizes that olive oil must be high-quality (fresh, high polyphenol, stored in dark bottles) and taken away from meals to avoid digestive issues. He cautions that many store-bought oils are adulterated or rancid, reducing their efficacy. The experiment demonstrated that olive oil functions more as a metabolic medicine than a simple cooking fat, offering natural anti-inflammatory and appetite-regulating benefits.

Welcome to the Benazzari show. Your daily ritual to live longer, healthier and happier. Here we use real science, ancient wisdom and a daily dose of vitamin G gratitude. So you live the life you were always meant to. Let's lock in. I drink 30 tablespoons of olive oil in 10 days and by day three, something happened that should have been impossible. My cravings shut off. My waste dropped and I realize most people are using olive oil completely wrong. And if you're doing it the way that I used to, you're not getting any of the benefits. I'm going to walk you through every day the good, the bad, the part where I almost ruined the whole experiment by making one really stupid mistake. And after watching this or listening to this, trust me, you're going to want to try this. Okay, so here's the thing about olive oil that most people get wrong. When you say olive oil to the average person, they think, oh yeah, salad dressing, maybe pasta, something you cook with a condiment. But that's not what olive oil actually is. Real high polyphenol, extra virgin olive oil is closer to a medicine than a cooking oil or cooking fat. It's a famous study from 2005, published in nature, one of the biggest, largest scientific journals on earth where researchers at the Manel Chemical Census Center discovered that fresh extra virgin olive oil contains a compound called oleocanthol. And oleocanthol acts on the same enzymes inside your body, such as COX-1 and COX-2, that ibuprofen works on as well. I want you to sit with that for just a second. The peppery sting you feel in the back of your throat when you drink really high quality olive oil, that's the same receptor that ibuprofen hits. Researchers actually figured this out because one of them was working on a liquid ibuprofen and they felt the same exact throat burning when he tasted fresh olive oil at a mill in Sicily. Roughly 50 grams of high quality extra virgin olive oil. It's about 3.5 tablespoons, gives you the equivalent anti-inflammatory action of about 10% of an adult ibuprofen dose. Every single day, and here's the thing, without any liver damage, no gut lining destruction, none of the side effects. Most people are pouring it on a salad maybe twice a week and calling it a day. But I wanted to know what happens when you start treating it like a tool instead of a topping. The thing that actually pushed me inspired me to conduct this experiment was the pretty med study. Pretty med is one of the single largest trials nutrition trials ever run. Spanish researchers followed 7,447 people around for years. They split them into three different groups. Mediterranean diet plus four tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil. Every day, the other group was a Mediterranean diet plus mix nuts and then a low fat control group. Olive oil group lost more fat than the low fat group. That's right, the group eating more fat lost more weight and they showed bigger reductions in waist circumference, which is a good marker for visceral fat that nasty organ fat. So many people think eating fat makes you fat while the study proves the opposite. Then just this past September, another study came out in the frontiers of nutrition. They looked at 16,273 adults. The people who consumed two tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil at least six days a week had an average waist of 89.1 centimeters, which is about 35 inches. The people who consumed olive oil irregularly, their waist circumference was 99.4 centimeters, which is about 39 inches. That's a four inch difference in the waistline based on how often someone consumes their extra virgin olive oil. So that's where my head was at. The science kept pointing me towards olive oil and what it's doing at a metabolic level, improving insulin signaling, calming inflammation, heck, even shrinking visceral fat. And that was sitting on a shelf full of olive oil thinking, "Am I actually using this stuff right?" Probably not. So I decided to test it. Three tablespoons every day for 10 days in a row. No other changes to my diet or training. Here's what happened. Day one. Okay, I'll be honest. The first morning, I poured one tablespoon of olive oil into a small glass and stared at it for like a full minute before I drank it. Drinking olive oil straight up without anything else like first thing in the morning, it's not a normal thing. The texture is a little heavier than you expect. There is that peppery burn in the back of your throat, which by the way should happen. That's the olio canthol that I mentioned earlier. And after that first sip, first thing in the morning on day one, my body kind of went like, "What is happening right now? Wasn't used to this routine." When I got it down and then mid-afternoon, I had my second tablespoon of olive oil. Then early evening, I had my third tablespoon. I tried to space them out between meals, not with food. Within a few hours of my third dose, my stomach felt a little off. I was consuming more fats away from food than I was used to. It wasn't painful at all. I just felt a little heavy. Like my gut wasn't sure what I'm doing. I wanted to better wondering if should I be having this much olive oil or should I be having it with my meals, but let's continue on with the experiment. Day two was a little rougher and a little interesting. I did feel a little bloated. My energy was slightly lower than I'm used to having when I'm working out. I didn't crash or anything. It was just, I noticed a difference. And around 3pm, I had a wave of, "Okay, I had a thought of what am I actually doing. Should I be consuming this much fat away from food?" I was going to just give up on the experiment, but then I thought, "I want to follow this, finish this, follow through with this, so let's see what happens. Let me go to 10 days and then we could decide if this was good or not." Here's what I figured out later. When you suddenly add 30-plus grams of fat to your body that you weren't planning on, all your gobladder has to release bile, the liver has to recycle that bile, and you got to break down that fat. It's called a moceification. Also, your gut microbiome has to adjust. In those first 48 hours, there's an adaptation, and sometimes you might feel a little off before things start to get better. I knew this and I held the line. Three tablespoons on schedule, drank a ton of water, and of course I went to bed early, like I always do. Then day three happened. I woke up on day three before the little sunlight stimulation lamp I have that naturally wakes me up. I woke up right before that. I opened my eyes and I noticed I feel really good. I don't normally feel hungry in the morning, so there was no hunger, but my energy levels were already increased right when I opened my eyes in the morning. So I went to the bathroom and I'll spare you the details. But let's just say my body had decided to release a few things it was holding on to. That's the polite version of what happened. So I grabbed my scale that I used out of curiosity and I was down two and a half pounds, and I'm not somebody right now that needs to lose a ton of weight, nor am I trying to lose a ton of weight, but my body was naturally releasing some fat in just two days. That's without changing anything else. Now look, some of that was probably water weight, but we know olive oil does a tremendous job at lowering inflammation. When you lower inflammation, your fat burning hormones get into your cells and they do their job better. I looked in the mirror, my face looked great. There was no puffiness. It looked perfect. Then I put on my shorts to get ready to record content for you. And I noticed that they were just a little looser than I was used to. So my waist was shrinking a little bit. That's just three days in. Then it clicked for me. This wasn't just calories and fat that I was consuming. Something else was shifting at a hormonal level. You see, there's a real mechanism for what I was feeling. Extra virgin olive oil at this dose has been shown to lower post-prandial glucose, which is your blood sugar levels after eating. One study showed that just adding 10 grams of extra virgin olive oil to a meal cut their post blood sugar spike by over 20%. So when your insulin isn't spiking and crashing all day long, you stop writing that blood sugar cravings energy rollercoaster. So if you experience an afternoon slump, that should be gone by day three. That urge you need to snack to keep your energy levels, that also should be gone. That feeling where you finish your lunch and your brain immediately starts negotiating and thinking about dinner or dessert or something sweet, that also should be gone. It's like the volume of your appetite gets turned down day after day of doing this. That's the moment I realized that this experiment was about to teach me something. By day four, that gut weirdness was completely gone. I was eating my normal meals. Chicken, beef, on my high carb days, rice, and certain vegetables and eggs, you know, the boring stuff, the healthy stuff. But I was eating a little bit less without trying. My usual portion size just looked like too much food. I'd served myself what I have OAS served myself, but I'd eat about two thirds of it and then I was done. I was satisfied. Day five, I had a workout where I noticed my joints felt different. See, I'm 41 years old. I lift weights, I'm very active, I play basketball almost every single day. And sometimes my elbows talk to me, my knees talk to me. Day five, they were quiet. You see, that's the real reason for this, the olio canthol, the compound I mentioned earlier. It's not theoretical. It actually inhibits inflammatory pathways, the same way that ibuprofen does, but without wrecking your stomach lining. A 2020 study put 23 people with metabolic syndrome on high olio canthol extra virgin olive oil for two months. They're inflammatory cytokines, IL-6, TNF alpha, the markers of chronic inflammation all dropped significantly. Their waist circumference is a little bit more. Conference went down. Their visceral, fat ratio improved and their fatty liver index improved. You see, I was running a 10 day version of this protocol, and by day six, I felt a less inflamed, better version of myself. My face and skin complexion looked better. I had less stiffness, especially first thing in the morning after a heavy day of training. On day seven, I checked the scale again, down about 4 pounds from the start. As a reminder, I don't have extra weight to lose. Obviously, my body was getting rid of some inflammatory fat on my body. The safest, cleanest doctor formulated protein powder for building muscle and shedding fat that won't leave you a gassy or bloated. I'm talking about prime protein from equip. It's 100% grass-fed beef protein powder, full nose-to-tail nutrition, not just the collagen powder like a lot of competitors on the market. Not only that. It truly tastes like dessert. One in three adults don't consume enough protein. I see it all the time with my students. I'm constantly asking them to share. How much protein they're having on a daily basis and most of them are deficient. Look, when you hit your protein target, you'll burn more fat. You'll feel more satiated, filled lean muscle, and you'll feel really good. One of the main challenges I get is it's hard to consume that much protein in a single day. And that's where something like a high-quality protein shake comes into play. Just one scoop of the equipment, prime protein has 21 grams of protein and the shortest ingredient list in the supplement industry. We're talking about a truly clean protein powder with the ingredient label to back it up. They third-party test their products to make sure. They are free of contaminants like heavy metals, glyphosate, and other pesticides. Our protein is also super easy on the digestive system and doesn't cause the blow or gut issues a lot of folks report with protein powder use. Here's the part I want you to actually pay attention to. I was not in a calorie deficit or tracking calories or macros. I wasn't dieting. What was happening is that the high quality fat I was having in between meals via olive oil was helping me feel satiated and more full. Inflammation was draining out and the water retention that comes with inflammation was leaving my body. See, my body was decompressing. I'm a healthy guy, but we all have levels of inflammation. The goal is not to bring your inflammation to a level of zero you would not exist. You want low but healthy amounts of inflammation. And that's the part nobody really tells you, especially when it comes to olive oil. People talk about how it's a heart healthy fat, which it is. Yes, for sure. But what they don't tell you at the right dose, the right consistency, at the right amount of polyphenols, it acts on your hormones, your insulin response, your inflammatory load, and your appetite signaling. All of it. It's not magic. This is just the mechanism of how this works. Okay, days eight, nine, and ten. Honestly, we're the boring parts of this experiment. The dramatic stuff already happened. By this point, three tablespoons a day was just part of my routine. Morning, afternoon, evening. I wasn't even thinking about it. What I noticed in this stretch was the steady part. My energy after meals were rock solid, even after a high carb meal, which I tend to do from time to time. No more crash at all in the afternoons. I looked at my deep sleep on my oral ring. That got improved my REM sleep improved my wake up times throughout the night. That decreased. So that was an improvement. I don't know if there was there is a clean study, a legitimate study on olive oil and sleep. But my guess is that there is a correlation there. There is a direct correlation because I saw improvements with my tracking and it makes sense. As you calm inflammation, you calm cortisol, the stress hormone. When you do that, especially at night, it improves your sleep. Now that's just my hypothesis. Day 10, the final day got on the scale down 5.8 pounds. Waste measurement was also down about an inch and a half. The weirdest part was what happened after I stopped the experiment. For about three days after day 10, I noticed my appetite stayed lower than my nose. Normal baseline, I was full and satiated. I didn't need as much food. Now around day 13 and 14, I noticed that sort of the change back to what was before, which tells me something real and something that was happening physiologically. This wasn't placebo, although I think placebo's are very powerful and I never negate a placebo. But it showed me that there was a hormonal shift that gained momentum during that 10 day experiment. Okay, now I'm going to have to share this part because if you try this and you skip what I'm about to say, you're probably going to have a really bad time. Around day 6, I got a little bold and cocky. I'd been spacing out my doses of the olive oil. Morning on an empty stomach in the afternoon between lunch and dinner and then in the evening right before bed. That is the right way to do it. Do it that way. The fat hits your gut without competing for digestion. The satiety hormones are trigger. These are colisestochine, peptide yy leptin. You don't need to learn those. These are essentially GLP1's signaling pathways. You have the same GLP1 you hear about with ozempic. You get this for free. They get to actually do their job. But on day 6, I got lazy. I had a big dinner. It was one of my what I call keto flex days metabolic flex days. So I had a steak, sweet potato roasted vegetables. I ate the whole thing. And right after I'd figure I'm going to just take my olive oil and I had skipped the afternoon olive oil shot. So I had two tablespoons I needed to consume and I did it right after that big meal. That was a bad call. Within 40 minutes, I felt like there was a brick sitting in my stomach. Not too painful, but it felt off. See the fat stayed on top of the protein and the carbs I was eating and it slowed down everything. You see, olive oil massively slows down gastric emptying. That's why it works for reducing post sugar glucose spikes. But when you add two or even three tablespoons of olive oil on top of a heavy meal, it slowed down too much. That's when I realized that three tablespoons a day works because of how you take it. It's not just the amount. It's important to space it out morning, afternoon, evening. Get with water. That's it. Get these mechanisms right. You'll experience smooth, incredible benefits. You get it wrong. You might feel like I felt. Okay, three things came up during this experiment that I want to share with you because they genuinely changed how I see olive oil. Number one, a study published in 2010 by UC Davis tested 124 different bottles of imported extra virgin olive oil sold in California supermarkets. Big name brands. Stuff you've seen on your grocery shelf. The result, most of the samples failed international standards for what extra virgin actually is. Some were diluted with cheaper oils. Some were rancid. Some were oxidized to the point where they were doing the opposite of what real extra virgin olive oil is supposed to do. Now in fairness, the FDA has pushed back on this study and more recent tests have found lower fraud rates than that 2010 number. So the truth is probably somewhere in the middle. Who knows, but here's a takeaway. If you're grabbing a cheap bottle of olive oil at the supermarket, you might not be getting what the label says. The polyphenols that you need for all the benefits we spoke about here need to be at a very high level. They start dropping fast after harvest date and accelerate when the oil is in clear bottles or sitting on the shelf for a long time. And a good percentage of what's sold in the United States is probably already passed its useful window. Number two, real high polyphenol extra virgin olive oil, the kind that gives your throat But that thing is because of the olio-cantle. That olio-cantle. The cancer of the polyphenol has been shown in Mediterranean diets in studies to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes by up to 51%. That's half. People are paying hundreds if maybe sometimes thousands of dollars for diabetes medication to do what olive oil could be able to do naturally. Again, this is not medical advice. Oh, speak to your doctor, but it's really interesting to me. And number three, this is the one that broke me a little bit. Another virgin olive oil may increase what's called diet-induced thermogenesis. Basically, how many calories your metabolism burns while you're digesting food? By about 5.1% compared to other diets. So olive oil isn't just calories in. The calories you get from it might cost more to process, which is a good thing. This slightly increases your calorie burn without having to track calories or exercise to burn those calories. Combine that with the appetite-blunting benefits and the insulin sensitivity benefits. And you start to understand why people in Mediterranean studies were dropping way size by eating more fat than the control groups. So if you actually want to try this, here's the version the protocol I'd recommend for you. You could do the same exact protocol that I did, three tablespoons a day, morning, afternoon, dinner, in between meals, or if that is a little bit too intimidating, you could do this here. And then one tablespoon a day. Take it in the morning on an empty stomach with a glass of water right after and do that for seven days. After that, bump it up to two tablespoons every day for a week. One in the morning, one in the mid-afternoon, always between meals. And then on the third week, you could go to the full-on experiment of three tablespoons per day. And the most important rule here is to use real, fresh-pressed, high polyphenol extra virgin olive oil. Make sure you're not using cheap supermarket stuff in a clear bottle, a plastic bottle exposed to light sitting on the shelf for months in some cases years, which leads me to the only olive oil I would trust to do this experiment with. Now, if you actually try this, this one thing may break or make your results. If you've been dealing with the stubborn belly fat, cravings that won't shut off, or you feel like you're doing everything right, but nothing is changing. It's because most of the olive oil people are using isn't doing anything for them. It might be oxidized, it might be low in polyphenols, or even blended with cheap oils like vegetable oils. So even if you follow the protocol perfectly, if it's with the wrong olive oil, you're not going to get these benefits. And in some cases, it could make things worse. That's why this part matters more than anything else in this video if you're going to do this protocol. I didn't just use any olive oil. I used the right kind. And to ensure I was getting the right kind, I stopped guessing and I stopped buying the olive oil at my grocery store. But I've been using this to fresh, pressed olive oil club because I know I could trust them. I've been using them since 2018. Here's the reason why this works so simple and so well. It's early harvest. So first harvest pressed. That means it's higher in olio-cantholese and polyphenols. It's cold pressed, so nothing gets damaged, and it's single origin. You're not getting mixed or contaminated oils. The cool thing about it, it's shipped fresh right to your door. When you consume the right olive oil, it may lower inflammation. It may stabilize your blood sugar and also shut down those constant cravings. So here's what I want you to do. You might have a good olive oil. You might not need this one here. But let's find out. Go to your kitchen right now. Grab your olive oil and take a shot of it. I like to drink mine straight from the bottle. Don't tell my wife, but this is what I do. I just take a shot just like that. That olive oil should burn your throat. Like it's doing to mine. It feels the burn. It's peppery. It smells peppery. It tastes peppery. It should even make you cough. That gets doing to me. If it does not do that, if it goes down smooth, that's a red flag. That's probably why you're not getting results from your olive oil. At some point, you could keep guessing if you're getting the right brand or you could fix the one thing, holding you back and get a quality source like the one I have here in my hands. And for my community, exclusively. When you buy two bottles of this amazing fresh pressed olive oil, you get a third bottle completely free. I'm not a doctor, but I'm a guy who runs experiments on myself and I share with you what's been happening. If you have a medical condition, if you're on medication, take this to your doctor before you change anything. None of this is medical advice. But here's what I'll say. I came into this thinking that olive oil was just a salad ingredient to cook with from here from time to time. But when I started noticing advanced benefits to what I've noticed before with olive oil, everything changed. Even if you get one of the benefits I described for myself, those 10 days would be worth it for you. If you got something out of this, smash the like button, drop a comment with your biggest takeaway here and, hey, share this with somebody you know. And if you're going to do the experiment, I also want to know down below you're going to do it. And I want you to come back after 10 days and let me know how the 10 day experiment went for you. Podcast Summary

Key Points:

  1. Drinking 3 tablespoons of high-polyphenol extra virgin olive oil daily for 10 days reduced the speaker's cravings, waist circumference, and body weight by 5.8 pounds.
  2. The benefits are attributed to oleocanthal, a compound in fresh olive oil that acts on the same inflammatory enzymes as ibuprofen, and improved insulin signaling.
  3. Proper spacing of doses (morning, afternoon, evening, away from meals) is critical; consuming olive oil immediately after a heavy meal caused digestive discomfort.
  4. The speaker warns that many supermarket olive oils are adulterated, rancid, or low in polyphenols, reducing their health benefits.
  5. The experiment suggests that olive oil can act as a natural GLP-1 agonist, reducing appetite and improving metabolic health without medication side effects.

Summary:

The speaker conducted a 10-day experiment consuming 3 tablespoons of high-polyphenol extra virgin olive oil daily, spaced between meals. Initially, he experienced bloating and discomfort on days 1-2 as his digestive system adapted. 5 pounds, and noticed reduced puffiness and a looser waistband.

His appetite and cravings diminished significantly, and his joints felt less inflamed by day 5. 5 inches from his waist, with improved sleep quality.

FAQs

High polyphenol extra virgin olive oil acts like a medicine, with compounds like oleocanthal that have anti-inflammatory effects similar to ibuprofen, but without side effects like liver damage or gut lining destruction.

The speaker consumed three tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil daily, spaced out between meals (morning, afternoon, and evening).

By day three, the speaker's cravings shut off, they lost 2.5 pounds, felt increased energy, reduced waist size, and experienced less bloating and inflammation.

On day six, the speaker took two tablespoons of olive oil right after a large meal, which caused a heavy, bloated feeling. Olive oil should be taken between meals, not with food, to avoid slowing gastric emptying too much.

Many supermarket olive oils may not be true extra virgin, as they can be diluted, rancid, or oxidized. High polyphenol olive oil, which causes a peppery throat burn, provides the most benefits and should be fresh and properly stored.

Olive oil reduces appetite by triggering satiety hormones like GLP-1, and it lowers inflammation, leading to reduced water retention and fat loss. The speaker lost 5.8 pounds and 1.5 inches from their waist over 10 days without dieting.
