‘Hitch’ With Bill Simmons, Van Lathan, and Mina Kimes

The podcast episode centers on "Hitch," a 2005 romantic comedy starring Will Smith, and examines why it became the most successful romcom of its time. The hosts argue that Smith's unparalleled likability and charisma are the film's core strength, compensating for a script they deem mediocre. They discuss the casting decisions, revealing that Smith's team avoided pairing him with a Black actress or a white actress to maximize global appeal, choosing Eva Mendes as a compromise—a reflection of early 2000s racial dynamics in Hollywood. Kevin James is highlighted as a standout, providing comedic brilliance and chemistry with Smith. The conversation also explores Smith's career, noting his deliberate focus on blockbusters and the rarity of his romcom performances, which they compare to his role in "Focus." The hosts ponder how the 2022 Oscars slap affected his public perception, arguing that his likability was a key asset that diminished. They analyze the film's themes, such as dating advice, contrasting its respectful approach with modern toxic masculinity and "red pill" culture. The episode also reviews memorable scenes, including the dance lessons, Jetski date, and wedding finale, alongside the soundtrack and 2000s-era details like tabloids and camera phones. Critics note the weak chemistry between Smith and Mendes, but overall, they praise the film as a charming, rewatchable classic that captures a specific moment in romcom history.

>> The rewatchables is brought to by the ringer podcast network where you can find Ben Lathen, unlike 17 ringer podcasts, you can find Meena Kimes, She's on ESPN, she talks football, catching her in July, probably the last time we'll ever see her before the NFL swallows you up. You got like a month left. >> I'm doing the fantasy show to talk about the hottest quarterbacks, so >> That's right, really? >> We're unveiling the hottest quarterbacks in the NFL. >> What do you like, maxing magazines for the mid-2000s? >> Jimmy's he retired and we're like, well, who's number one now? >> I have takes. >> Did you make your retire? >> I'm holding off of my takes and so- >> Got a couple of years left, I feel like. >> You know, what is he like, 34, 35? >> It's kicking around. >> Yeah, I don't know if he's going to play this one. >> Well, Will Smith was 37 when he did Hitch. >> He looks so much younger to me, and we are going to cover that one, next. [MUSIC] So the last time the three of us got together, we did crazy, stupid love, a 2010 romcom. This is a 2005, Will Smith is 37 years old. It's at the end of a 15 year romcom boom, right? Which is starting with like one Harry Medsau in '89, we're ripping through. Meg Ryan's basically done with this. Julie Roberts has done true Barrymore, Reese Witherspoon. Kind of the tail end, and yet here comes Hitch. And it's the most successful romcom of all time to that point. So why, what happened? >> Will Smith. I mean, what makes this a rare romcom in the romcom pantheon, and I think it belongs there. Obviously, financial aid is, it's not about the woman. Even men as good in it, we'll talk about that. I think she's great in it, but there aren't that many huge romcoms where we think about the guy, actually crazy, stupid love is kind of up there too, right? Because we're puzzling. But Will Smith is an incredible romcom actor. And his chemistry is what makes this movie sing, it would not, I think, be nearly as good if it was any of Will Smith and starring role. >> And the only other time he really tapped into this was Focus. >> Also a great movie, Sneakly. >> First romcom, we ever did Focus, not a romcom, but it's like, we've already done it on rewatch. But same kind of thing. And that, why not, Van, why not more? He just wanted to be an outer space or be the last man left on earth. I think it's tricky as a black male lead in romcoms. When we're going to talk about that, when we talk about some of the politics behind the movie. I don't know if it's as easy for the black male lead to do the romcom because of some of the dynamics behind the racial play and stuff like that, that comes into it. >> That happened going back to the '80s when they wouldn't let Eddie Murphy kiss anybody. Basically, for every movie he was in, Finally Until Boomerang, but then that was like an all black cast basically. >> Right, and that's an amazing romcom with beautiful black people. And it's not regard, it's not one of Eddie Murphy's gigantic hits. It's like people a lot of times in that, they don't want to see that. That's not something that people are always readily, it's not accessible to them. But for will, it puts you kind of in a fucked up situation because if you do the movie with a white woman, then you piss the susses off, right? And it comes in like what are you doing, right? If you do it with a black lady, then maybe audiences don't go to see it. And at that point, that's the furthest thing from, by the way, that's in the research. >> Yeah. >> Basically, the conundrum of this was, he was a global superstar, but an all black cast for romcom would not have been a global part of it. >> Yeah. >> What about that and the decision to make it, Ape Mendes, to kind of split the difference. I was thinking about how, you know, the episode of the studio where they're casting the Kool-Aid movies. Literally, when they were making Hitch, I can imagine them putting up the faces on the board and suggesting, how about an Asian actress? Do we know any Latinos? And then being like, all right, well, she kind of splits the difference, but I think you're on to, like, why isn't Will Smith, who's amazing in romcoms, close to his best self, I think, in this particular style movie, Why isn't he in more, it seems financial to me, right? This is the guy who's so deliberate about only wanting to be in the big, until he did some more artistic stuff. The biggest blockbusters, and because of romcoms in the politics you talked about, he was limited in that particular genre. >> I am legend. And after Earth and all these other ones are just going to make way more money. >> Yeah. >> And that's it. And Will Smith, like, pretty famously studied all of the most successful movies of all time. I was like, I have to do this. I have to have a big action movie. I get a good outer space, and romcom was not on the list, but that's the thing. >> And this made a billion dollars. >> Yeah, this made for me a $370 million, but it's interesting that they had to basically walk through the science of how to attack this. It was a little like the Paul George trade now. It's going to work out for the selfie zone. >> There you go. >> How do we use the advanced metrics to really do something, I don't know how to do the brand is. >> Oh, it's camera deers. >> Right. >> But it would have been so good in this area. >> So split the difference, you basically have to go Latino or Asian, like, is there anything else? >> You go Latina. You go Latina in that situation that way nobody's pissed off. It doesn't, and no one's jarred, and the movie sales overseas. What you know is interesting, I thought about this did not in any way hamper the bodyguard. The bodyguard made even more money than his, yeah, drama, though, just key distinction. >> Very key distinction, but still though, the audience, and whatever Kevin Costler just wouldn't have done, he loved her so much on screen in a real life, he had to make the movie. >> Van and I did bodyguard for rewatch, but it's just the two of us. >> Right. >> So he would have had, but in that particular movie, it's also, it's a different story to your point. Like audiences did accept that. Black woman, white guy though, it is different. Once again, love scenes in a Pelican brief, taking on them out. That's 92 or 93. Love field, a movie that was really well regarded, like critically, didn't do that well commercially because people are not golden child, Eddie Murphy, 1986, they cut the scene. And Charlotte Lewis was Filipino or Asian, I can't remember what she was. >> Which band is what she was. >> But they were like, we can't even do this. >> Other than this movie, what interracial rom-coms, they've even crossed 100 mil, like, been massive blockbuster. >> Well, here's the difference. Focus comes out in 2014 and it's Will Smith and Margot Robbie and nobody blinks. >> Yeah. >> So I think something shifts from the mid 2010s and the mid 2000s. Well, there's some things that are about this, but I'm saying that nobody, they just make that movie and she's the girl from Wolf Wall Street and nobody says anything. But in 2005, it's a huge part of the research. I was surprised. I had never thought of it that they were really like, yeah, if this character is a black woman, we're not going to make any money overseas. Like, you have to understand that and Will Smith, they go through the whole thing. >> Do you think that's as to now where it's like, okay, if this isn't, because crazy rotations, now one of the most successful rom-coms to the last decade or so. For years, it was like, well, you just make a movie with Asians, nobody's going to watch it. If you just make a movie with that, leads are all black, nobody's going to watch it. Do you think that's changing as well? >> I think that changed. >> Yeah. >> I just feel like if we're at a different, last 12 years, I would say we're in a different place. >> Man, I'm going to be real with you, man. There are some things that are enduring and if you make a rom-com with a black male female, and a white female, you got some historic puddles to jump. I'm going to just watch the movie and laugh, as I'm going to have fun and then I'm going to look at some people I'm watching the movie with and they're going to be like, yo, why isn't that regime hard? [LAUGH] >> It's going to be like, yo, man, it was Nicole Beharry Busy, how come that couldn't be the same? I'm not saying anything, I'm just saying that there are certain things about America. There are the Nikolandria generation, do you know about Nikolandria? >> What is it? Love Island. >> Love Island. >> The most popular love Island. No, I think, yeah, you don't see it a lot, and yeah, there was another actress who they mentioned, Camardia's was the main one, I forget who it was, oh, it's a black actress. When they were kind of split the difference, I think she would have been, I think anybody would have been good with Little Smith, candidly, I think that was my main takeaway from rewatching of the guy's chemistry with like a pencil, Kevin James, I like that. >> I mean, he had chemistry with Kevin James, yeah. >> I got a lot. I got a lot of Kevin James, shit to talk about, man. >> So, classic romcom structure, we have the confident handsome guy with all the secrets. We have the goofy awkward guy who's unlucky in love and needs help. We have the Smokin' Hacker, who only cares about her job, doesn't have time for anything else. And then we have the second Smokin' Hot actress who's like too good to be true. She's just super wealthy but can't find love and she's a model and looks like a model. And it's literally played by a model. It's like how she can't meet anyone. This is too intense. And somehow all of these things collide into one giant plot. They figure it out. I was surprised, Van, this movie slaps hard. >> Surprise? >> Man, come on, bro, I didn't get it, man. >> So, when you watch it, do you have any Will Smith Oscars baggage as you watch him? >> You don't, you keep saying this. >> I'm really scarred by the Will Smith thing. >> This goes to a conversation that we had. before. But like, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're still scar by, I just wonder what the question is, is there like a darkness lurking behind the shadows of darkness? There's a question post slap. Could he make hitch now? No way. Or any like super, any, because again, hitch works because he's the most likable man on the planet. Right. But that's what the Oscars pulled away. That's what I meant. Yeah, that's what I mean. It's like, it basically took his cape off for being the most likable guy on the planet. His likability is 99% of whitest mood works. Yeah, I agree. I completely agree with you guys. And I understand the reality that for some people, Will Smith is less likable after what happened. But it is so difficult for me to fathom how and why. It's not less likable. He was the most likable forever. Everybody loves Will Smith unanimous appropriated. Nobody was out on Will Smith until the Oscars, but I honestly think a lot of that was already gone. Yeah, that's how I feel. It's about to win the Oscar. That's a reason why you shouldn't chase likability, because it is impossible to maintain. Tom Cruise was the most likable guy ever. Tom Cruise was the Will Smith slightly. And then do you understand, Ritland Mac? Do you understand? Right. It's in his East. You're glib. Stand on the conglib, Matt, the whole nine, him like laughing talking about, I don't want to hear that. That's yeah, people think that. Now, look, that's like what are my favorite. You've seen that, right, Craig? It's a lot of people that is their Tom Cruise, but he endured and now, Tom Cruise, he's got the interview. So I think the same thing can happen for Will, even though I get how joy the slap is for people. Tom Cruise argued against the concept of postpartum depression, Matt Lauer. Matt Lauer. This is a YouTube clip that exists. Right. It's like, it's like watching a UFO laying out. Anyway, he lectured Matt Lauer. We're seeing a couple of Tom Cruise on one of six in park where, you know, that's what I'm talking about. That's a young job. The bigger question to me is how long can 100% improve a rating like about the last? It doesn't like. I still feel that way with Clooney. Clooney. I guess, but the thing about Clooney is that if that were true, I like Clooney. I like it. But if that were true, the movies wouldn't be struggling like they are. So like true, or it picks bad movies. Because what you're really talking about is you have to be truly an AA a-lister and be super likeable. Clooney is not, it was not at Will Smith level. Taylor Swift is at Will Smith level. Is she? And in terms of that, that's gone down. And then she invited Dean Blan Dino to already. It's hard to maintain that likeability when you are truly that famous for your whole career, I think. Because you don't have a normal life. Yeah. Yeah. Clooney can come and go. But you know what we're really, you know what we're really not talking about is that type of likeability. It also breeds contempt. After a while, people will, number one, find somebody new to like. And then once they find somebody new to like, they're going to find all the reasons not to like you. They're going to compare you to this new person. And then also, once people have gotten their fill of you, it's just going to look for reasons to hate you. You know who's who's maintained it? Steph Curry. I think he seems like a genuine, good person. I think most people like him. I don't, I don't know anybody that doesn't like. That would be so strange. Somebody's like a fucking hand Steph Curry. It's great. Yeah. What do you do? Uh, I, okay, to go back to your question, I didn't, I wasn't thinking about to slap it all. I did not cut into my brain once, watching this film. I can separate the art from the artist, I'm like, no, for me, what it did was took me back to being, I wasn't 13 when this movie came out, but I was, the peak will Smith. And this is, I think, the very near the end of like his absolute height as his, as an actor coincided with me being in like middle school and early high school. Like that, it's so generational for me. When he was the biggest star on earth, my family would go to the movie theater to see every single one of his films in a Penn State Men in Black. I mean, that's freaking like the Wild Wild West is coming out like terrible movies, too. Uh, like I was in, I think eighth grade when didn't juggle when it came out, which was like laser pointed at like 14-year-old white girls living across America. So just watching him, I just takes me back to being a kid and thinking like there's just no stars like this who dominated the landscape the way he did. Well, that, and that's why when I say like I, I think about the slap when I watch movie like this now. It's not like the slap itself. It's more like, you're watching somebody who had it. Who had it, right? Where he could make a movie like this, where it's like this script isn't even that good. It's, this movie's probably 15 minutes too long. It's all over the place, but it's like he's so likable. And I, it's just, he just want to hang with little Smith, which is what every movie with him was for 20 years. So I was wit will from the beginning, like I'm that old, I'm that old. I'm just old enough to have like witness the inception of Will Smith's career from parents just don't understand all the way through the fresh friends all the way to like, hey man, bad boys. This is slightly believable. Like will could be a badass. Then in the business day, we'll kind of like Lowry, Mike Lowry, you're like that. And then Will becomes the biggest superstar that there is. And you're like, whoa, this actually happened before my eyes, but it was one of those things like, he was the best pick to become the biggest star from like 1992 on. You could feel it kind of coming. You know what I mean? And he was like the number one, he was like, Peyton Manning and Draft by the Colts, where you're like, oh, this guy's going to be the number the rare thing to a TV star becoming a film star doesn't happen. And we all watch fresh prints. Yeah, all of us. So like I felt like I knew he was going to leave fresh prints and make movies for a couple years there and then did that. But bad boys was the mom are like, oh, we're doing this now. Yeah. And then it depends his day. And then he's out of here. By the time this comes, he's in a run of movies that like he's willing his way through the movies, like legitimately like this movie without Will Smith is bad. And to me, that is the true measure of like a real movie star and quarterbacks. What true? The 13 and three season when you have like a garbage offensive line and one receiver like Brady had like five years. Yeah. Like who's the Mac Jones to Will Smith's Brock pretty, I don't know. So any other actor coming in in this particular movie and playing this role downgrades the movie from an A minus to a C plus I would say that Brady had the greatest NFL mind in the history. So it wasn't like, you know, I want to Brady didn't have Brady never, Brady never had Brady never took I robot to the championship. So Brady almost they didn't know. He never took I robot to the channel. That was the O six bill bill check. Well, you're talking about they have Willie McGinnis and all of those like, no, the O six Pats had nobody left. And we almost won the Super Bowl almost just because of Brady. Okay. Is Kevin James element here being elevated by Kevin James Kevin James. Incredibly likable. I love him so much. That was my biggest take away rewatching this for like the fifth time. I was like, Kevin James is delightful in this movie. I think he's always like this in every movie. It's just I don't choose to see a lot of the movies. I don't want to talk blood. I got to how take you what is it now? Proud to do this now. We can if you want to wait. No, let's do it now. Is it now? So I invented a category. And the category is the Tom Arnold category for the second guy still the movie. And this is named after Tom Arnold's character and true lies and true lies. Okay. Who does it still the movie? But almost stills the movie from a piece of Arnold Schwarzenegger. He wins every scene in this movie. I could make a determination that when Kevin and Will are on the screen together. It's this great thing that's happening. But he kind of stealing scenes from Will Smith in this movie. This stuff tails with my most rewatchable scene because I think that take has a lot of heat. And I'm it's the scene the dancing. I don't want to jump ahead, but like the scene where Will Smith teaches about a man. Will is being the straight man to the point where you can see Will Smith trying not to laugh. He's like holding his hand up his mouth multiple times as Kevin James does warm in the fire, warm in the fire, making the pizza, making the pizza cute to a cute tip. And I watching Will Smith react to a guy doing comedic dance better than Will Smith is incredible. Like that never happens. Craig has different Kevin Smith relationship. Kevin James relationship because grownups and grownups too. To be honest, that's not true. I've seen every single episode of Camp Queens. Oh, you go way way back. I love Kevin James. Yes. Multiple times from me. That show was up for nine years. Yeah. Yes. It was up from 1998 to 2007. That was like a real like I come home from school. My family's running everybody loves Raymond and King of Queens on TBS on repeat. I've seen every episode of Love Kevin James. He's funny. He's really good. When I watch this movie back, I read a bunch of reviews and everybody's like, this movie's not that funny. Every time he's on screen, I think he's hilarious. I'm glad you brought up Tom Arnold because he's like the rich man's Tom Arnold. Yeah. Yeah. He's like the way better version of it basically. He is so good that I actually found it almost believable. They ever felt that I would go for him. That's what the other thing with this movie, all four people were really good and likable. And the emperor of the light of the thing, I don't really understand. Like she was a model before she came in actress. This is easily the most successful thing she was in. She was in some revenge. Yeah. She was in some TV show and the other TV show was like blood and oil or something like. She had a lot of that bad. This is the biggest one. I think she had some she had some drug alcohol stuff when she was a model that she cleaned up by the time she was in this and then Eva Mendes was another one who who ended up having a bunch of problems like two, three years after this movie and a bunch of problems. What do you mean? I don't know. She she's talked about it. She had a lot of like that alcohol stuff. Watching this movie I texted you at Mendes. I'm trying to think of like an athlete who had to retire early for reasons and you go back and you watch a performance from them. That's what it's like. It's like Derek Rose or somebody. Where did somebody that got? It just should have been like 10 more years of her generation. I have a lot of take I have a whole category for her later. She's great in this and I think she has real chemistry with Wolf Smith too. She's really likable in it. It's not I think she's someone who gets lost talked about mostly in the context of her looks in her career and I get it. Watch this movie. She's throwing a hundred but she's a legitimately likable co-star to Wolf Smith. I agree. I think her character is really fun. Well, it fits the romcom thing where you can believe she's into her job. Yeah. There's even though she's a smoke show. There's still something that's believable about her not being with anyone. Like she's a little bit of a mess but in like that traditional romcom ways. We've kind of by this time in 2005. We've done every version of this and I would actually say this is like the end of this whatever era of romcoms we had because now we're moving in like the appa tower and like those kind of advanced ones like like we are we are the millers like movies like like just like these different five-year engagement. These more elaborate versions. This is like the more simple and these person they have a lesson to learn and they oh my god. Oh, they finally figured out he's this and then oh, but and then we had like what Valentine's Day, all those ones that happened. That's what oh nine. That's what happened. The the top year's day, Valentine's Day, the top line one with the big stars ended up becoming a movie with like 50 people in it. He's just not into you. Like they figured out there was a couple of outliers like the proposals like an old school romcom. I was like 2009 but I went through all the box office mojos to see if any romcom was like a major hit after '05 and really not like this. This was the 10th biggest movie of 2005. That's crazy. Which we just didn't see again. I mean, sex in the city, I guess if you count that on. I don't think that's a romcom. I don't think so. I don't think so. The film sex in the city that did more money than this. The guy who made this, Andy Tenant, has made I think I've seen because I've seen every romcom. Even like the the ones nobody sees like the Jennifer Lopez mine where she plays a mate. I've seen them all. He made the wedding plan. But he made sweet home Alabama, which is one of the goat romcoms, obviously, but also like fool. He made both fools Russian and fools gold. Both of which I've seen not great. I disagreed about fools Russian. Fools Russian. Hey, put on, wait a second. I'm in on that. By the way guy Matthew Parrot. If we talk about if we're talking about if we're talking about people who like the athletes who you bought stock in and you thought like didn't fill out there or meet there or whatever. I can't talk. I legitimately after seeing fools Russian thought that he was going to be Tom Hanks. Really? Man, that move. He is. I thought you were going to say that about somebody. Remember, we did how to take I did a whole Matthew Perry thing that he should have been the biggest star we had. He is funny in that movie. There's one scene where he gets he gets in his car, but he jumps out of the car because the leather burn him and he goes, it's January. It's like 90 degrees of Vegas. He just he's just hysterical in that movie. I love that movie. She's beautiful. I love that movie. I love the whole nightmare. You just have the sex. You know, to really be a romcom carry them. And this is something Wilson has you have to have sex appeal in addition to being funny and likable. And so who's your ideal romcom lead? Who's your all time? Tom Hanks is sexy. No, no, he is not sexy, but he has sex appeal. Oh, I mean, women. My wife really like Matthew Perry. Me and I just wasn't in on them. I guess it's cool. I don't know. Who's your number one though? Um, okay. Is it a Marsden type of thing or Marsden? No, but the white seven dresses. Very good. Yeah. I've sadly seen every single one of these because between my wife and my daughter and then how much they were watching them. That's how I could honestly have done more of them. Obviously, Hanks is kind of the famous goat of having done some of the biggest ones of all time. Matthew McConaughey is pretty good in them. McConaughey is good. He's really good in tent. What's the movie? That's another guy in tennis. Get another movie that uses the next. Yeah, I was thinking about to get to that. Did some research on that one. What's your favorite romcom ever? Just out of care. I said, man, boomerang is way up there. Um, this is actually pretty high on the list. I love fools rushing. Like I like, I love that movie. Um, I'm trying to think, like when Harry mentally, I always think of the romcom not as much about the desirability of the characters, but the believability of the rom and the calm. Yeah. Which is why some of the wrong. There has to be some calm. Like there's a couple of like legit funny. I'm a high. You've got male guy. I know a lot of people. I know a lot of people don't dig that one as much. But at the end of the movie, if you know they're going to get together, the measure of the film is how badly do you want it? Like you at the end of you've got male, I am so relieved. Yeah. When they say that they got together, you grant also. I forgot. Yeah. Of course, that's a minute. Right. Yeah. Uh, for a while, Sandra Bullock was the female goat of the romcoms. She was known Ryan. She was like in her 40s, though, still striking out. While you were sleeping, do you guys remember that one? Yeah. Classic. Yeah. Um, my, so mine are doing some top of my head about last night, when Harry met Sally, uh, my best friend's wedding. Pretty woman. That's pretty woman. I guess that counts as a romcom. It's 100% a romcom. Yeah. See, I always think the most successful ones were the most successful for a reason. They've figured out the best that had massive stars in it. She, if it's, if it's a three way female situation is Julia, Meg and Sandra Bullock. I feel like Sandra Bullock has a claim to the throne. The, the sleeper one for us, which will never do them rewatchables because my wife's the only one that likes it is a lot like love with Ashton Kutcher and Amanda Pete. Never saw it. I might have seen that just through my wife and then my wife and daughter, it's been on my house like 30 times. Ashton Kutcher did no strings attached or is that just in Timberlake? That's just two movies that are exactly the same. That's right. The benefits. Yeah. But this is when romcoms went sideways when we started doing the friends and benefits, no strings attached like they were ideas that had already happened. Right. They're basically doing the two point oversions. I think for romcoms to be really great. And I actually think this movie, even though it's not the best certain movie and there's some issues, there have to be a few things that actually surprise you. If it's in totally paint by the numbers, it's even with good stars, it's boring. And there's a few little small decisions in this movie that take you by surprise and make it not entirely predictable. Yeah, I agree with that. What's your favorite romcom? What it, what's in the Craig and Liz house? When Harry and Sally sleep was in Seattle, probably because I'm not counting things like forgetting Sarah Marshall. That's like a comedy. Yeah, that's the appetite ones. I don't think count. I think that's a different genre. And then calm. Rom. I like that to calm. Rom. You need the rom first. Yeah. There hasn't really been, I mean, I'm curious what you think. If there's been like, I like set it up, I thought it was really great. That's probably like the last good one. One of the best streaming original romcoms and Glen Powell. Really good. Glen Powell was so good at it. Yeah. We love that, but that was a big grant. But that was probably almost 10 years ago at this point. Yeah. That was the first year of grandma. Powell should legitimately, just for three or four years, just be a romcom guy. He should at least make them every like three and a half years. Yeah. He should almost be like the world cup. Yeah. Every four years, like the world cup. He should just come out with another concept romcom. High concept romcom. Home Springs. That's good though. Oh, it's groundhog day. Counts romcom because it's my favorite movies of all time. Come around. Come around. So quick. Well, that's my favorite movies of all time. Here's the other thing that happened. The romcoms, the streamers figured out how to basically professionalize them and crank them out and do every sort of idea constantly. We'll just make a million of these and it'll be all right. I think Zoe, Zoe H is in like at least I know she's in anyone. I saw in on Netflix. Oh, don't think it wasn't watched in my house. The guy on that is pretty good. I saw him in some what's it called voicemail letters from his voice mills from Isabel. Yeah, you're not going to believe what happens, man. She her sister dies and she leaves voicemails to her dead sister on to a phone that this guy has who's listening to the voicemails and decides he's going to he's falls in love with her and tries to hunt her down. And guess what? She finds out near the end of the movie that they had the phone. And then they have to work it out. Wow. Yeah. One of my favorite movies of all time. Actually, my if I did a letterbox top four, this would be in it. I think is a romcom and no one in this room is going to agree with me. I don't care. Edge of tomorrow. Oh, come on. It's the program. Oh, that's interesting. Think about it. It's actually so romantic. It's so funny. Edge of tomorrow with top crews. You're probably there's no way. It's a lot of genres every dies everything the movie has a body count. It's like I don't know What's you know? We're learning every guy is fun. She doesn't have a dog dad. It's tomorrow Damn right tomorrow is a perfect movie and it is a comedy and it is incredibly romantic I think it's a perfect movie. I legitimately think it's one of the best movies in that decade really we haven't talked about Without a doubt like with yeah, I went to the arc like a couple of different times. I was trying to tell people Yeah, this is really good. I watch that movie anytime. It's on well, I will say something about the rom com before we move on. I do think that With the whole rom and the com thing is interesting to think about that because think about what else was happening during this time Like movies like the notebook were coming out and they were going so wrong and then movies like the Judd Avatar stuff was coming out And they were going so calm that they were skewing you got to have rom and com You have to have a movie that is really funny, but in no way so we're so how to in this right? That's another all-timer But that's yeah, that's more like that's like a drama rom com. Yeah, it's not that funny. It's I like that movie I think it's really romantic and I think all four leads are very likable, but it's not that funny. No, it's a rom drama. All right To that point pretty woman is pretty woman funny That's pretty really it's it's a little like Hitch with Will Smith, but on a whole other no level because Robert some gear are just so great in it Doesn't really even matter what happened. She's adorable. She's gonna be adorable. She looks great. He looks great. The the concept is like perfect. It's funny Yeah, she's she was a prostitute, but only for a couple times. How many rom coms? She don't even do it for a week It's important plot by how many rom coms are really funny? Like like laugh like This one is funny. This one's funny. This one's funny. I mean crazy stupid love crazy. Yeah, it's so funny But then it goes in the apt house side the comedy part becomes more important, but forgetting Sarah Marshall is a rom com It's just super funny. Yeah, it's more comedy. It's kind of it's almost not fair to put it in here I don't even think of it as a rom com. Yeah, so we took a list of rom coms Something else about this movie is like This movie was made at the perfect inflection point for it to be made because Around this time the pickup artist dudes start to come out. We talked about this a little bit of This is the Tucker Max era And what was that other guy? Um, who was the guy who did the game? Neil Strauss. Yeah There was another dude that had like a this was a whole Early internet era. What's the other guy? He had like a cool name. He wore a cool hat He was on VH1. What's the mystery? Do you remember him? I don't know. Yeah, I don't know. I don't know. He invented he invented nagging. You know nagging. I know nagging. We talked about nagging last time By the way, while I was driving here I was thinking about last time and I just like to say I think it's pretty brave of me To come back and talk about another how to pick up woman thing After getting universally dunked on for falling for Ryan Gosling's game During our crazy Yeah, so it wasn't a dunked on like Tim I got a lot of I gotta deserve people on your side though. Make it funny I actually entered my brain when I was thinking about how I was gonna defend Will Smith's sexual politics in this movie What they the best the politics of hitches and thinking of women. He likes women. Hitch is a mythical character And like he's a mythical character He's the rare coxman who also loves and respects women. There you go And I've also realized is everything he was doing was bad and he had the wrong formula It's not bad Unsuccessful. Right. He's not like wow. We should treat women better all of the men. He's like wow I had that wrong treat women well. Yeah, he wants them to like actually like them It's a very important thing that he doesn't work with fans once in a while. He only works with good guys who are down on their luck He's like the Robinhood of dating and suppose they're staying here in the director talk about The making of the movie which sounded miserable. Yeah, but he was basically saying I really wanted to avoid all the cheap jokes and like I felt like that we had a vision for this and The more we went kind of the cheap joke route the movie was going to fall apart He said this is Andy Tennant the director He said when we wrap that movie. I called my wife and said I've just ruined my career and I've ruined Will Smith's career too Damn, he said we had our difficulties. I didn't want cheap jokes, but he didn't trust me The movie I wanted to make and the movie will want to make neither one of those movies as good as the movie we made together There was a battle and then he said Will Smith three days for production Tried to delay it because he wasn't happy and he basically tried to stop production And Jada got involved He was like you got a you made a commitment and did that whole thing and and then he said when we wrapped Will walked off the set didn't could say goodbye to me didn't say anything. He just left I think he felt the same way I did we thought this movie is a disaster. We wrapped it was depressing And then they did a test screen and everybody was like I love this And then Will Smith's like boom and became Will Smith It would be hard If you're if you're telling people the reason that goes to the movie It was just like go watch Will Smith be smooth Yeah, for the I remember there was this girl that I knew in college I was right after college at this time and she was like I found out the type of guy that I want And she says my type is the Alexander Hitchin's dog. I swear on my dad Like like she said Alex that's the type of guy that and I think for a lot of people was a gentleman said it was shut up She's had a couple Alexander Hitches and a couple of Shawn Michaels But like it for that you could watch this movie as a woman and go hey, I'm not gonna speak for women Hey, I want that type of guy you could watch this guy as a guy and go that's the best version of The that type of dude that you're confident. That's yeah great with women It's not like he's not going to Take these women home and have sex with them, but he's gonna respect them The reality is these movies are unassailable because you can see them on a date You can see them when you're married and you can see them when you're in high school and you Want to take either a friend or a date like you you're hitting every age group And there's something for everybody and they're gonna win forever And that's why Netflix makes just basically this at horror movies are all they pump out Amazon's doing like YA versions of this, but this is like the whole guard They've done the advanced metrics on all this stuff. They're like guess what people watch rom-coms I know, but there's so many because we've done every idea And then and as we said earlier so so much of this depends on Do I like the people in this movie and the more famous and better the people are And think about it every major star has made at least two of these Yeah, right even time cruises made a couple one guy who been so Yeah, he doesn't count that won't do it. He's never been in a romantic comedy doesn't doesn't does it a lot of romantic news Com is at a time right right he's like I've kind of solved a murder and navigate Yeah, doesn't it won't do it doesn't do it doesn't Intensity what would it dance out rom-com even be I think he could do a great one as he and like now that he's in his golden years Like an old person rom-com There need to be more rom-com starring older people like enough said Gandalfini screy one I got to be real with you don't get anyone under 40 to go maybe I think that there should be But You got to believe you got to want to Like in this movie in there a part of you that's like hey these two people Yeah, are they gonna burn they're gonna have sex yeah, we talked about this when we did Nancy Myers all Nancy Myers who we by way haven't talked about it all and Where's we're listening our favorite rom-com's a lot of the she's almost like her genre. Yeah, and she shows them having sex when you say oh like well What what what are we talking about here 60 all there? I mean 68 nothing now 60 like Brad Pitt 62 You still try to yeah, that's nothing that's nothing now, but when we started getting to like, you know 75 to 80s and stuff like that. It's kind of like you know, that's what I was on an airplane um some point like three months ago and um, and the Wi-Fi was out but the TV worked And I'm just going through the direct TV and grumpy old men what was on Yeah, the movie was fucking awesome. Yeah, it was so good. Yeah, I don't think I've seen it since but it but that was like two old people and Margaret moves in They get they get they're both like trying to Yeah, that is a good that's yeah, but that movie did so well. They made a sequel too to the case of like why isn't this why isn't this generation represented like it does succeed But think about it. You're Walter Mathau Jack lemon and and Margaret like three she was super famous super beautiful in that This was this would be the move for crews if he ever gives up like trying to pretend it's top gun Like to actually do like an older like romcom where he's a widow or something. Oh, I can move me to bring up Jerry McGuire by the way we're doing the best romantic comedy's full-time. Yeah, I mean, that's a good one. Which is there's a Enriched there she watches it at the end. 60 million dollar movie made 371.5 So past 51 states as the biggest romcom ever held the record for three years Roger Ebert two and F stars Right, we're in a race later. Hater hater. I might have to go through his books and five to force our movie just to like resurrect what did he say two-and-a-half stars there's a purpose for a movie like catch and that purpose is to supply a pleasant and undemanding Romantic comedy that you can rent next Valentine's Day it's not that I dislike it it's just that it doesn't seem entirely necessary the premise is intriguing the third act goes on autopilot it's a borderline fuck you rush I that's borderline I'm not mad at him but it's I thought about it have a good time sometimes rush come on rush yes we'll see I think the third act of the movie I don't feel like it was lagging that much personally there's one part that lags but we'll talk about it we're gonna take one break and then we'll do rewatchable scenes most rewatchable scenes the opening we'll spend the running through the hitch tips basic principles meaning let's go through these quick okay no women wakes up saying God I hope I don't get swept off my feet today it's fine it's fine okay honestly the don't when I rewatches this time I was like like waiting for it and everything's fine but keep going no matter what no matter when no matter how no matter who any man can sweep a woman up their feet you just need the right broom sure 90% of what you're saying ain't coming out of your mouth you said it's basically 30% tone and 60% body language like that's not I believe that one out of shorts acting a woman's best friend needs to sign off on all major relationship decisions it's not not wrong now that's pretty much true bro it's also a fundamental tenant of rom coms like the best friend plays a role in the movie I feel like that's true my beloved daughter Zoe her friend she trusts the most the other Zoe I don't feel like she would ever seriously date somebody that the other Zoe was like I don't like that guy yeah you I think that's I think that she's just gonna trust the friendship even if they're blah I mean that's bad enough but if they're out on the person it's just gonna be a sensitivity I can't do it yeah guys are different guys will just be like you'll just watch a friend get married it's like they go off to a war and they don't come back I don't have an opinion I look I don't have an opinion on y'all I you like it I love it what I don't I don't in my friend groups we have never been on that I don't like her amen if you like it you've never had a friend who's with someone that y'all hate so much that somebody says something so I've had friends before that how can I say this I've had friends before that were with women that other people that we knew had known yeah oh that's a different they knew her really well yeah a lot of people knew her that's all I'm gonna say right and some people sometimes people would do that and they would be like hey bring that up and then even then I'll be like yo bro get out of his business if he likes her that's his thing but if for me if you like it I love it I'm staying out of your your your your whole situation if you like it I love it but I don't want to hang out anymore I will hang out I will if I love you I'll put up with your girl when she get a little too drunk no we're not talking about we're saying like with someone who's significant other is deeply annoying or maybe offensive look we'll start pulling back you know the couple with this kind of came up during crazy blood you'll kind of pull back if you don't want to hang out as couples anymore I've never been there's not like a lot of people that I that my my homeboys have like girls and stuff like that or late ladies they made that I like take a particular liking to them it's like I don't do that like I don't I like your girls it's such to get kind of weird like you know me I don't I don't know I'm just like from a place where it's like what are you talking no no no no no fans fans doing that I'm not gonna judge who you fell in love with I don't I don't like I don't get involved in that type of deal that's like have you ever benefited though from the thing where you're dating someone and her friends are so happy that she's with you and not the previous guy yeah because I think that that's ladies do that that's a powerful female motion yeah when like your friend only dates crappy guys and then suddenly they meet someone everyone likes and then we all go in way too hard that was straight back yeah we're in way too hard and my world reactions me and y'all don't say out of each other's business I have two things say about this one I can't talk about this literally can't but I'm also somebody that my wife is probably considered my single best asset by other people which is kind of insulting to me but fine I've had things you know I'm obviously older there's been some relationships I've watched that maybe I kind of wish didn't unfold the way they did the other thing is I'm saying from far like oh I hope they don't they did yeah um second the thing that you can't explain properly to people in their 20s as all their friends as the marry go around stops that everyone starts getting married cricks in this right now you're now have a couple of friends that marry somebody and you're gonna think well you know it's not great but it will be fine you're not going to be fine you know we're gonna yes that's what I said you're not gonna hang out that's it this is the the partner will always win and the friends will always lose and that's how it goes and this is my this is this is my advice from from Confucius Bill I'll put William next last week and William just build this week and I'll put a button on it that's the reason why it's a losing thing it's a losing thing you cannot compete with matters of the heart so you get mad at your home you get you get mad at your homeboys girl and you say whatever they're going to get back together you're going to be the one break up you can't say anything yeah it's like I thank God you broke up she was awful and he didn't have to give six months and she is going to every bed in my 20s I had a really close friend who day to go who was not only very unpleasant unlike well like she was a pathological liar yeah and that was too far to the point where I've vividly remembered myself and all friend groups from various stages of his life like his best friend from college his best friend from work we had like a meeting of the five families together when we were like we got a sage intervention and we did and they broke it actually worked they broke up this is horrible I have like this this is uh the horrible I would argue that you guys did I think that is sinister what you gotta dump but we were just like here's the information do you know oh my god she was like she was like literally crazy it doesn't look like another wrong girl I wish I could tell like 20 I wish I could tell my story um I don't know do I know I know no I'll get this in um yeah the intervention can go one of two ways there's another way I can go we're staying up staying together and then it's all destroyed yeah um subtext the bar scene is there our next rewatchable scene with the flashback um but we have guys playing pool mmm to dudes I think this might have been the last guys playing pool romcom scene we have a nice little 15 year run of this just like let's go play some some pool and talk about relationships let's do this they have a scene like that in Boomerang mm-hmm but it's 15 straight years of have Craig have you ever played pool with somebody and just talked about the ladies no I have not where do you guys stand hold on nine ball when the implication is that he's dating Wilson and sister yeah yeah he's a he's microrabber port is his brother in law kind of weird that just never comes back in a racial relationship was good enough for the movie they left that one that's the most two thousand if I think I've seen rapper poor that's I have that underway because it went scene they don't bring him back yeah he jumpscare it's like well we have a board to this movie more than that later um we have uh Albert quitting his job in the boardroom can't just say real quick there's no way to talk about that bar scene and not talk about how the 20-year-old girl gorgeous Nika that's all that and fall down I know are you out of your don't you ever don't play your dear thing William Max as don't play like that boy when I want to say it for the audience the $20 barter I know I know I know I'm looking at her I was just it just shook me back to remember I don't know why she wasn't the biggest storm just how he felt in that movie like can I say just movie everybody looks so odd except for chemistry but you know but like he was the hottest he's ever looked decides never look I the credit to where they shot it like William Smith William Smith looks amazing in it if Amanda's looks incredible like just every scene everybody and the close-ups everybody just never happened incredible did she marry Alan thick don't she marry Robert Dick she marry Alan thick I knew she married the thick she married Robert Dick I think they were already married they were together since they were like they got divorced they got divorced after the the uh what was the what was the whole the huge record yet if you did was there lines blur along the blur line which was the first Megan Markle in like 2010 who is going to be an a plusless famous person she would have been like a 10 to one favorite Paul iPad was in a couple of things and she's seven great career but like legitimately legitimately I thought I thought that was a Brad Pitt the middle of Louise moment, like I looked at her like Jesus. She is so gorgeous. Albert pushed his job in the conference room, but Amber wants Amber was impressed that he stood up for himself and then Will Smith's hiding behind the door and he gives, that's a really good scene. That's just a good romcom scene. They hit that quite a few times, the physical comedy of Will Smith giving him advice and Kevin James, you know, fumbling as he's trying to woo a woman. That's the best one out of all of them moments in the movie. Good like classic romcom or it's like, oh, they make your car. Oh, she's going to seize me on the door, but hands on the pen some business. Hitch meets Evendus, right as she's meeting Chip. They call me Chip. I couldn't help but notice you look a lot like my next girlfriend. Chip, Chip, the chip, kind of the man. Chip fucking brings it. Chip, I only can't wait for it. Chip, kind of the man. Chip, are you, are you always so close off? Chip is in hands. Chip, just, chip, just earned it. I love them. All right. And then we have Jets King on the Hudson River. Yeah. Awesome. That's not just you. Wait, Mina, how do you feel about the move in the scene with Chip when Hitch pretends to be her partner to get her out of the awkward. What am I favorite romcom is that one of like the coolest moves to you or is that actually a little bit lame? Well, I have it under something I just enjoy. And I realize I'm bringing a little baggage when I'm talking about falling for a guy's moves, but I just enjoy every scene where Will Smith gets to be the smoothest guy alive. It is a classic romcom. Is this guy bothering you, honey? Move. Great. I also love, just give me a hug, when he gives her the walkie, the scene where he gives her the walkie talk, because most movie Hitch is actually fumbling with her and that's kind of the walkie talkies in here. I mean, I love that when, when she doesn't say over and he says, you need to say over. Yeah. That's funny. Yeah, it is. When I saw that scene, I was like, I thought about interesting writing in that scene, because like that scene makes me think about the Matrix. We were like, when Neil got the walkie talkies. Like, you know, Will Smith, the movie makes me think about the Matrix when Neil got the walkie talkies because you're thinking to yourself, when Neil gets the walkie talkies, you're thinking how much do the, does Morphe is know about this world that he can give him a walkie talking and then walk him through that or the phone or whatever. And that makes me think about the chance that Hitch took with, yeah, the Sunday morning. Yeah, it's amazing. He, he, he is basically like the Matrix of love. He knows that he figures, she'll say, no, I'm fired at it. He figures that he's not going to be weird enough. He also gives her a walkie talkie because he knows that the rest of the audio, the rest of the, the office is going to hear and they're going to be reacting to it. He mean the most unrealistic newspaper office and. Yeah. Ellis Island is kind of a cool scene for a variety of reasons, but the butcher reveal is really funny. It's like a genuinely funny movie, but okay. So this is what I was thinking really about. I thought he was just a butcher. Rom comes, have to have moments as a prize you. This is the first time we were like, whoa, I didn't see that coming. You think he's so smooth. Everything's going well. Well, you obviously knocked off the jet ski. When that hat, that reveal happens. It's so funny because it's so surprising and out of left field that he didn't plan ahead and he totally missed it. Really good. See, dance montage you mentioned leading into them at the club. Of course, really get Kevin James in this part. Food allergies scene, which I think became, I think they use that in the trailer in the jet ski. Yeah. Albert takes her to a next game and goes for the big kiss. If I have very few passions in life for romcoms and lifetime movies, but youth sport scenes with bad soccer games and anyone going to an NBA game, I'm locked in. All I care about is who's playing, trying to figure out what season it is. So Marbury's in it, right? This is March 2000. It was Marbury's first game against the Grizzlies at home. I looked at the box right before and this later, but I love when they do that. Antaraj was really good at this. They would have those guys sitting courtside basically once a season, I think in the Aries seats. Oh, yeah, probably. And the real Aries. But yeah, they would, I just, I love when people were in the NBA into it. The next seven this in how to lose a guy in 10 days, train wreck, right? Train wreck is a good one. Yeah. Big use like the doctor for the next. There's a couple more. I should have, I should have, I should have asked Claude for one of this, I think, give me all the rom coms with NBA scenes, actual action, the date from hell food fight. When, when, when, if a man does comes to his apartment, I'll piss off. Yeah, you wouldn't have them throwing stuff at the kids would be like, who is he to throw at her to throw lettuce at her? Yeah, wouldn't happen now. No, what's lettuce? Whatever. Speed date scene. So you can't assault anybody with the speed date scene. I do like the speed date scene. I like speed date scenes in general. But this one is really good. Okay. I actually looked this up because I was going to have the most 2005 speed dating at Budacan. And then I took it sounds like, let me look this up. And many articles came up about speed dating having a resurgence post pandemic. So this one, this one is making this one is making a commentary about speed dating, though, because we'll Smith and even men days look like two hot aliens dropped into right. The speed dating full of losers, like, which culminates with the woman standing up and going, I haven't been late in about a year. So like, which is funny, which is very funny. It's kind of the weird unspoken thing about even men does in general, right? Which is like, she's way too hot to just be a normal reporter. And for her to like, not be moving in the world. I don't know, it just doesn't. She's not too hot for the movie, but it's a little bit. That's what you hitch. Which begs for forgiveness on Allegra's boat. And then the wedding scene and credits got a level of good end credits. Love when you just get into it, man, we know it is not real. Let's have they get married. Let's have some fun. My wife said, actually, this is my favorite scene in the movie. The dancing. Yeah, she just really liked it by celebrating love one. Yeah. You will Smith. Like, you better have a comedic dancing at the end. And Will Smith and Ava Mendez dancing was pretty high level to how that could go. And I just love that this movie actually was like, Nah, Albert didn't just get the girl. Like he got the girl. Yeah, like they got married. Like you think that started the Jennifer Hudson show where the guests have to go down and dance? Would you do that? Would you? Literally my worst nightmare. I think about it all the time. I wouldn't do it. You wouldn't do the spirit tunnel. No, I would come up with a bit. I definitely wouldn't do that. I wouldn't even dance away. I just need a couple of more notches to be invited on the show. I cannot wait to do it. Well, I don't think the show exists anywhere. It's so high risk. I would prepare more for that than an Oscar speech to not fuck that up. Okay. If you climb yourself, it's over. It's over. But if you are an unexpected success. And like, let's say, I don't know, like you're a half Korean, half Asian or half white person, perhaps a woman who no one thinks can dance. And if you were that person, you were to go up there and shock the world. That clip would follow you forever. Like throwing like a 90-month-old. That's like catching the bass. Obama at the DNC, like you would be able to like soar. But see the reality is if you're if you're me and you're coming today, they go, but with you, all y'all got to do. Yes. Bill, you can do. You know what you could do? You know what will tell Albert to do in this movie? To dance like you live here. You live here. 90 degree angle. Bill, I'm telling you, if you come through the spirit tunnel and you like this, people are going to be like, Jesus Christ, that bill's got soul. It will never happen. We love Bill. I would hire a dance teacher. I would hire a dancer. I do never write something. It lives forever one way or the other because the best one ever was Brittany Snow. Who's the unbeaten still guy? Who's the. Who's the absurdly hot guy who's coming in lantern? What's his name again? He's in lanterns. The guy's like too hot to be. You know, with the light eyes. Why is my why is he blanking? You rubber rich. The clip of him doing that was the comment section was so feral. They had to shut it down because it has. I think it's like a good wear bad way. I was going up. Mama was up in there. There was like. You know, you matter. But like there was there was going up. If you I'm just saying, if you kill that, it is your shot. Bill, you could do it. Brittany Snow. What's her most rewatchable sin? I'm a name something that I think it is the most laugh out loud, funny moment in the movie to me. Yeah. So there's a great moment where will go so ledger to plea Albert's case. And they have this cute little thing where he realizes he didn't do anything and you exhale as an audience. And then he grabs her their holder. And just as he does that, Albert slides into frame and he goes, you should plan a whole time. Take my girl. I need a tax will every time. I've seen that a dozen times. Every time it happens, I laugh my ass off. What do you have? I think it's the dance lessons coupled with hitch giving him advice. Some of it a voice over wise on the first day. It's not just that the dance stuff is amazing. Contra do you see him dancing the date when he's I wrote it down when he teaches him where heard him where to put his hand. And he says, watch your hand placement. Too high says I want to be friends. Too low says I just want to grab some ass. And he goes friends ass. me and then it cuts to him doing that. I love that scene so much. - That's the most re-ratchable scene. - It is, the scene, that's the scene that, like-- - With that said, I really love seeing New York City with the Jetskies and the Hudson River and all that stuff. I would give that great check, ordo. I would also give that Denny Thieves, Benihana. I just like, it's this kind of New York scene that I've never seen in a movie. - Totally. - And it was also this movie's four, less than four years after 9/11. And it's just like New York's starting to feel like it's coming back. - Made me want a Jetsky. - Yeah, and it was cool. I like that they did that. All right. What's the most 2005 thing about this movie? I could offer you famous gossip call on this. - Yeah, that's it. - Michael Rappford, as the buddy in a rom-com, or Stefan Marbury in a Nick's uniform, I think it has to be the winner. Right? - That's fantastic. - I mean, all of that stuff is very the, any other ones? - I think, so, okay. As I said, I think Will Smith and what he does, all of it actually has not aged poorly. The way he talks about women, what he's teaching these guys. But the fact that it's all these guys dating women who are physically out of their leagues, I don't think you would see in a movie now. Like you wouldn't see, like all the guys he's coaching are like, he's coaching up to like go after a hot woman. - She's loving it. - That's just kind of a very early to mid-2000s dynamic. You just don't see that often. - Rappford Port. You gonna call her or what? - Yeah, I guess I'm obsessed with that hot woman who walks in the bar, which is weird. - So here's the thing about that scene. Just to let you know. So we learned later, we learned later that Rappford's character is married to Will Smith's sister basically. - Yeah, I don't understand at this point. - It's not at all clear in the beginning. - It's not clear in the beginning. - I don't know why that's a part of me. - So why is he hoping he's like, he's like, he's gonna get these women, what? - So Will though is still with his brother-in-law, being like, "Hey, man, you want me to go get him and bring him over here?" - We are watching his brother-in-law. - Kind of look at the, it's like super weird. - They said that that Rappford did in farewell and they had any process of this movie, 'cause it's like a fourth leading build person in the movie. - Yeah. - Is that our top five, and he's more than- - He even had other scenes with him that were cut. Yeah, they definitely did. The Floyd Gondelli butter in my ass and Lollipops in my mouth award for something I just enjoy. What do you got, Nina? - Well, I told you, it's Will Smith being smooth. Like all, 'cause most of the movie he's not, that, like, the whole gist of it is, he gets a momentous by actually screwing up and kind of bumbling and whatnot. The allergies, Ellis Island and that. But the moments where you get to see him be smooth, first time he approaches her, the fact that he, and this is similar to Gosling in Crazy Super Love, that he lets it go, let's the fish back and catch and release, the smoothest thing a guy can do is catch and release. That's a tack. - What do you have? I got the Vince Munson character. I just love a pure asshole. The moment that he's sitting down talking to him, you know something's off, 'cause he's like, I mean, this guy is ugly. This guy can get a lady. That whole thing, I just love that character. I love in every movie, just a straight up, terrible person. I gave Vince the Chest Rockwell Brock Lenders Award for Best Character Name, Vince Munson. What are the odds? That guy was gonna be a good character. - That's true. I've seen him and other stuff and I like him. He plays, do you watch Fargo, season two? He plays one of the Super Evil Midwestern mob. Fargo one, season one, season two and three are amazing. - Yeah. - He plays one of the evil mobsters in that. And I think he's in a bunch of like law and order stuff. He's just got such incredible resting douchebag days. - So I had this in what's age the best. His name's Jeffrey Donovan. Seeing him in a romcom. This is a guy who's been, I think in both Sikario movies, he was in-- - He's a glasses guy. - He was in-- - That's who he is. - He's in shot collar. - That's where I know him from. - He is, you see him in a fight. - What was that? - This guy's on the car. - What was that? - He plays the dude that's like, yeah, he's on the yard. - Yeah. - Yeah. - What's the character's name's the car with the glasses? He's graver's, he's like one of his like right hand guy. - Yeah. - But in shot, you see this movie and there's a darkness to that guy from all the other movies. And he's perfect. - I'm telling you, it's his face. I'm sorry, he's like actually, you know, just some people just have those faces. - Maya Floyd Gondola is in a romcom when the characters watch another romcom. - Yeah. - When they crossed the James. - Yeah, yeah. - And this one, they did it with what was going on. - Jeremy McGuire, yeah. - And even my dad's getting choked up. - In the 90s, like 90s, yeah. - Is that kind of a weird, I'm sad movie to throw on? Jeremy McGuire? - Well, it was the-- - Speaking from experience, no. - It was a pivotal moment though. It was when he was trying to wonder back. I know him from those things, but that's actually not, no, I want to know him. - Jeffrey Donovan? - Yeah. - He just did the thing where you-- - Bernode. - Bernode, it's the other one. - Bernode, he was the guy from Bernode. - Yeah, I don't think he's the that guy. I think he's Jeffrey Donovan. - I think he's Jeffrey Donovan. - But Bernode, yeah, Bernode, he's been into many things. What sage the best, the walkie talkie trick you mentioned. I thought that was really funny, it would never, ever work now because I just don't, I don't think anyone would bring walkie talkies into anything and people would probably think it was a little bit creepy. - No, I'd be like, this is the coolest guy ever. - Andy Tenant's quote is what sage the best about Will Smith. This was him saying Will Smith wasn't that bad to work with. Even the hard times he'd always say, wait until the junket, we're going around the world with this and we did it and it was great. It was the most amazing trip I'd ever been on and when it was over, my time with Will was over. I've never heard from him since. (laughing) He's traveling like 50 countries. - So-- - Junket sound amazing. - He do. - I just, when I looked up the Andy Tenant, the first thing I saw was a quote from last year of him saying Will Smith, his production company is making a sequel and he didn't come out of it. - And coming out of it? - Yeah, there was like some 28th anniversary incident. - And he's like, that's Hollywood, I guess. - We had an Andy Tenant at ESPN forever. - Okay, so when I looked at it-- - For Randy 60, and I get a whole bunch of them. - Yeah. - I like Andy Tenant. - When I looked at Andy Tenant's IMDB, who made this movie, in addition to all the romantic comedies, it says E60 and I'm sure they mixed it up with R&D Tenant. - Different Andy Tenant. What sage the best, never lie, steal, cheat or drink, but if you must lie a lie in the arms of the one you love, if you must steal, steal away from bad company, if you must cheat, cheat death, and if you must drink, drink in the moments that take your breath away. - I have that one, he's the worst. - This one's the best. - I have that one, you say that? - To some lady on a date right now. - And that's why I had to put you on Twitter. - Like, she's gonna put you on Twitter. She's gonna be like, this movie, but I enjoy it. Like, that's a terrible one. - Unless I miss reading it and the point is it's supposed to be going-- - Yeah, it's bad. She looks at him like-- - But he's actually corny, which was what was funny about it. - I don't know. - I know, at this point, she's a little off him. - She's a little off him? I don't know, but I think it's always-- - I think he thinks it's cool, and I think the movie's trying to say that if she were still into him, she would have liked that. Which I don't-- - Do you know how you feel about his speech at the end, about flying and not-- - I thought it was intentionally bang. 'Cause he is like, okay, so it's a testament to Will Smith's superpowers that he has many corny lines in this movie. - Yeah. - Someone in many of them do not succeed. I actually don't think the final one really succeeds as well, he gives her that speech about like flying and leap and whatever, it's still fine 'cause the ending and the kiss, but I don't know. Some of his lines are not great. - What do you have for what takes the best, anything? - Camera phones, she pulls out a little flip phone. She takes the picture of them. We have, we can shoot whole fucking documentaries and movies on our camera phones now. They've aged really well. Also, a movie about teaching people how to interact. I don't think people understand how bad things are. Like, I watched a whole many docks. I watched a whole many docks about how right now in Japan, they're having like national security issues from a low birth rate and seniors living longer and kids not fucking enough 'cause they don't know how to meet people. And we are maybe a half a generation behind the fact that people cannot interact becoming an economic time bomb and like blowing up societies. And this entire movie is about a guy just teaching people like how to talk to women and get out of their own way. That point, we looked at those people and it's kind of like, oh, these are your guys. But now, that's like an epidemic of its own. - Your take coincides perfectly with mine. I had what's aged the best. The way Will Smith talks about women and talks to women. And I really believe we now desperately need a Will Smith in the world to counterpill all the like in-sell, red pill man overs, we need Hitch. We need Hitch more than ever. - It's true, Hitch two point out. But right now, if Hitch was doing this, Hitch would be like, yes, I'll teach you all the ways to get all of these women. It's gonna cost you $150 a month to be on the S tier of my shit at my sub stack. - And behind Hitch, it would be like two chicks in bathing suits, he's in Miami and they look like they're gonna fuck it any moment. - If we had Hitch now, there'd be three women who barely talk on a panel. He's talking to like some other guy who sucks. He's like, "Kings, know you're worth "unless she comes to you." Or they could be horrible. This is 2005 and this man has a better sexual politics that I said at the beginning than like a lot of people now. - Awful at you said, Van? That's the things I get confident of the most on have nothing to do with me, one is my wife. And then the other are how my kids can have conversations with people. And people actually say that to me in my wife. Like, it's so nice that your kids just know how to talk to people. I could do a whole thing on it, but the whole-- - They can go in this for a half hour. - The whole audience gonna feel like I'm digriding, but that's why I'm not gonna do it. But like, you know, it just is. - Why don't you launch a show like this where you talk to men about how to talk to women? - 'Cause I say out of men's business. - Yeah, we just found that out earlier. - I said like, "Hey, why stay out of men's business, man. Whatever y'all got going over there, is y'all got going on over there." - Yeah. - If I gotta check you. - You're married in a serial killer, I'm not gonna judge you. - Hey, will you like the way she kills? I don't know what the people deserve to die, but you know what they do? - They help coaching them up. This is what I'm saying. I'm not saying intervening, literally. I'm saying just like coach, okay. - Well, does that, we need more rope. We need more positive role models. - I'm definitely not one of those. Kid Cuddy, "Pursuit Happen" is a word for best needle drop. Usher, with the Yes song. - Yes, good. - Great time to back. - We had a few of the songs from the '90s and the early 2000s poppin' in this movie. - It's a good needle drop. - It's a good needle drop movie, though. They got "Oh, we is in there." They got ushers. They got John Legend's in there. It's like a good needle drop movie. - The John Legend cover, when there is when they're Jetsking, I really don't you worry about it. - Right. - But it opens with like back-to-back Motown, like the romantic comedy hits, like they just go, as he gets his basic principles. - Did we talk about the opening where Hitch basically uses all of the different guys to like outlay his philosophy and all of the, do we talk about that? - Okay. - It's a great thing. - It's a great, it's a great thing. - They realized they didn't clear Yan Will Smith just called Usher and Usher gave him permission 'cause Will Smith was the fucking man in 2005. He's like, hold on, I'll call Usher. - Yeah, it was so good. - Can we get the movie out of college when Yan comes out? - Yeah, I was out of college. It was like one year, I kinda out, but still in college mode, out of college, but still in college mode. - See, when I was watching this, I was going back to being 13 and thinking, "My Will Smith," but then when Yan came on, I went back to 18-year-old Mina and the basement of SA, just yeah, pounding, people playing beer pong. (laughing) - He's amazing. - It was the biggest song in college in America that year. - That would be a funny thing too. What was the biggest song each year? - Yeah. - It was the Outcast, the "Hey, Yeah" song. - A lot of it. - Whatever year that was, but each year there was that Justin Timberlake song that one year, - Which one? - But like '05. - Sexy bad? - Sexy bad. - That's how it's supposed to be. - Granny year ever. - Oh, six? - Oh, six? - Yeah, sexy bad brother. But each year there was one. What was this, what was this silo song? - Fuck you. - Yeah. - That was like '708? - Something like that, yeah, that was a massive one. Two, all of these songs are gigantic in that regard. You just, you think of the year in this movie, right? There's no Will Smith songs on this song. - I think he was over by this point. I don't know. I think Wawa West might have been the last time he went to the world. - Surprise he didn't go into the lab and come up with a Hudson song. - Get hitch or something. - For Hudson Jetskies. - Wawa West came out what year? 2000. - I mean, that was it. - Yeah, you're right. - 2000, something like that. - Was there a better title for this movie? The movie's working title was called The Last First Cast. - Terrible. - Terrible. No, Hitch is a perfect title. - Yeah, I agree. All right, we're gonna take one more break then Mina has a flex category. - All right, Mina, your flex category is. - All right, I'm gonna go with what age is the worst. I'm low to say his name again because it's kind of like Candyman, he'll show up in our mentions, but Michael Rappaport as a likable friend. (laughing) - Here we go. - It's great to have you. - Uh, I agree. (laughing) - Hey man, what flex category is that there? - You just put that in what you just said so where? - You just looking for a reason to shoot that. (laughing) - Yeah! - That flex gotta go, and that's like, (laughing) - The beauty guy was trying that word. - The beauty guy was trying that word. - That's why I regret doing this. I was thinking though, around this time, when I watched this movie, I was like, yeah, Michael Rappaport, like, hey, likable friend, 90s movies, all that. And then, now I'm just like, that's so crazy that he was a likable cameo during that period. So, um, (laughing) - I don't feel like doing it, man. - Yeah, it's just like, I don't feel like doing it. - You're waving a flaming honor for the man. - It's like all fucking thing. He was like, oh, you know, come on. (laughing) - Hey, someone else go. - The Amanda Dobbins word for best piece of real estate. The Kevin Smith Kiss scene, when Will Smith and their on this, when Kevin Smith tries to kiss Amber Valetta. - Kevin James. - Kevin James. I don't know why I said Kevin Smith. - Will Smith, Kevin James. - Yeah, I think that in the notes a couple of times. - The director said, Will and I went to a brownstone we liked, walked up the door, knocked on the door to see if we had permission to shoot there. It turned out to be Sarah Jessica Parker's house. - Whoa. - And she was like, hi. And we said, can we answer the doorstep? - Yeah, that's crazy. - I don't like that. - I can't do that. - That's whole shit, though. - Yeah, I don't like that. - And they let us do that. - That never happened, bro. Are you nuts? - This was like peak sex in the city years. - So you're looking for a place to shoot. You knock on the door. - And it's really like the brownstone. So he's like, I'm gonna knock on the door. Basically, I'm Will Smith. And then she carried Bradshaw answers. They have a moment. She's like, sure, you can shoot in the step. That's the story. - Okay. - All right. - Not by anyone. - Maybe it happened if it's his will knocked. Since will knocked and it's her. Maybe this is one of those brilliant, amazing New York things that can only happen there. Which is girlfriend word for week link of the film. But yeah, Van. - You guys are gonna like my answer. I think it's the chemistry between Will Smith and even Mendez. I do not think there's very much chemistry. I think it works for the movie. It's not like he had with Margot Robbie in focus. It's not like that is also the chemistry in the movie that works the best. - It's in the Kevin James. - It's in Kevin James. - Yeah, it's one of my notes. - Even Kevin James and Legra Cole have better chemistry than Will Smith and even Mendez. I don't think the chemistry is all of that. - It's not bad, but it's not bad. - It's okay, but it's not what's so memorable from. - It's not like her and Denzel. - What would you say is? - In the worst. - Best pairing. I guess you love Beyond the Pines, yeah. - I think that a place Beyond the Pines, a place Beyond the Pines is a desperate, beautiful, tragic, amazing, sublime tale of the human condition. I think it's a legitimately amazing movie. And I think her and Ryan Gosling in the movie are heartbreaking, but gorgeous. I love it. - What year was that? - 12, 13 years old. - What do you have for a weekling? - Yeah, so I'm just looking at, now, even Mendez. - She's great in the other guys, that's Will Ferrell's one. - Well, there's that clip that goes viral. - You know what, you know the clip that goes viral, literally. - One of the best movie clips. - It's time to rewatch this list. - It's like the Tom Holland, like, umbrella clip where if it comes on, I will watch it from start to finish every time. It's so funny. - Is that what you're wearing? - So, obviously, the party exists and many roles exist, but Mark Wahlberg is brilliant in that scene. - I'm sorry, I'm such a mess. - That's the thing, there's only like 9 or 10 actress in the last 30 years who could have been perfect for that scene, you know. My weekling in the film, I think the kissing scene with Will Smith and Kevin James is a little odd. It's just that's a weird scene. - Interesting. - Do you be in-- - What makes you uncomfortable about it, Bill? - Are you uncomfortable with how uncomfortable they are? You're being an ally? - No, it's not an uncomfortable thing. - Great save, Mina. - It's not an uncomfortable thing, yeah, maybe it is. - It goes on for like a minute too long, and it's just one of those, like, all right, we get it. You're trying to teach them. I don't know, I just couldn't get there with it. It's funny. - I now pronounce you Chuck and Larry. - Oh yeah. - I didn't like that one. - One of the, talk about scenes that are great. - The Jessica Bill scene mattered to me as a kid. - There's a great scene in that motherfucker. One of the best scenes ever. - Yeah. - I liked that movie. - Yeah, I liked that. - I like that whole scene. - Kevin James, you like that whole scene? - It's whatever. I'm fucked with you. - I just thought it wasn't a great scene. - Yeah, I'm the like, it's whatever. - It's great. - It's one of the more iconic scenes of the movie, which is that's why I have to take it interesting, but I don't know. It doesn't bother me. - It's a great category for this movie. - Weak Link. - Oh, no, Weak Link. That was thinking of something else. - 'Cause we gotta move on to what's-- - I know, yeah, so I have to Weak Link here. - I don't think there are any Weak Link's in this movie. - I feel like the main core actors are all pretty solid. - What's age to worse? Newspaper office, let's do it. What the fuck is going on in this office? And what was this newspaper? - It's a tabloid. - It's a tabloid. It's like a post daily news competitor. - Yeah. - But they have an office that's out of, it's the nicest, I've never seen a nicer office ever. - I actually had this as most 2005 thing about the movie, which is thriving tabloid industry. And I think 2005 might be a little bit late for it. Really the JFK show is what you brought you back to win like paparazzi and tabloids who have been this obviously year field. We're just so massive. But I actually think like, early 2000s, a tabloid. - By high five as TMZ's kind of taking over. - Yeah. - And even like Perez Hilton, I think this was fucking beautiful. - Not like this office though. - She, this had like a fake curtain. - I'm not even going trip. We had out, we, you know, out and fly a vista. We had a hole at heart. This is a great office. Big, beautiful shit everywhere. Ping pong the whole night. I should've was dope at the MediCat market right there to go get something to eat. - I never had that experience. When I went to New York right for Fortune Magazine, I was in a cubicle riding about like IPOs. So it was not fun. - ESP in the magazine had a really nice big giant office. - They did, yeah. I used to go there. - And then at one point, they just looked at the numbers. They're like, wait, why do we have this office? - Get out. - Yeah, it was huge. the building. Oh, you mean the one in New York where they would want to New York? It was half empty at all time. It was in the best part of the city. It was pretty great. Couple of things for me. Oh, yeah, go. Okay, real quick, rapid fire. Almost everything Hitch does in this movie with her would be considered just like way too much in creepy now. Like totally. The first date to me way over the time. Everything he does with her now, it's too much. Can't do it anymore. Everybody assumes the worst can't do it. Walking talk is like they're, they're googling this guy to see if he's on a list. If my first date is at 7 a.m. or writing Jetskies and then I show you Ellis Island about your great, great grandfather. Like Jesus Christ, talker. We talked about this the day doctor thing. That's great. Oh, go for it. I just said she liked the Jetskies. Did you none of it bother me? Okay. Okay, walkie talkies. We don't laugh. We're great for a five. No, you can never do it. Yeah, I mean, you would know better than us. I know, but I've already been cast as a chump and a mark, but I got to say if a guy pulled the walkie talkie thing on me, it'd be curtains. Can't be honest with you, though. It depends, doesn't it all depend on the guy? 'Cause if you like the guy, then it's the human resources me. I thought that 7 a.m. was more offensive than the Jetskies. It was seven a.m. I was like, man, you're gonna get off the phone with a friend. Like, man, do you think it's weird that he asked her to come somewhere at seven o'clock? Is this a guy like, is he gonna do? There's nobody outside. You don't want a whiskey and go into the Hudson? Yeah. So, couple of things. Number one, you know what you don't see in movies anymore? Women's slapping or slash assaulting asshole men. Oh, she needs him in the-- She needs him in his nuts. I thought immediately, in that point, she should have called the police on it. She called me the authorities as an assault. Like, we don't, we don't hit. Like, as in James, when he assaults the newsstand. Does it matter? Does it matter? I'll upset you are emotionally. Don't hit. Don't hit. We don't hit anymore. And really, the only thing I had here was Will Smith's choice to fall in love with even men days and not Paula Patton. He should have pulled Paula Patton with something special in this bitch. I'm not gonna lie, man. Even men, even men days are special. Well, Paula Patton is-- Even men days in this movie, I had me looking up, where she ranked, you talked about maximum and the maximum lists from the year. Never cracked the top five, which honestly, in retrospect, makes me question the integrity of this. I was like, if even men days never made the top five, circa mid-2000s. So, it's for terrible. Bought and sold. I was about to, I had, I'm gonna do it. For what stage is the worst? I think the movie does drag in the middle a little bit. Weirdly, never with the Kevin James scenes. It's always when it's just Will Smith and they have a men days. And there's a couple in the middle there that I feel like, especially after the food hours. I don't love the food hours. Could have kept moving. The whole fake food ray of food allergies that thing is doesn't work here. Kevin James's character in 2026, probably an insult? I think it would be a slightly more believable man. Like, I don't think they would go that extreme 'cause nobody would buy it. - That he would be able to get away. - Right, yeah. You have a flex category, Van. Or he did it. The time on on True Lies, bitch, did you steal my movie award? - Well, let's do, you did it. So, let's do the CR thinks Luke Wilson could have been Harrison Ford, how to take a word. I have a how to stake. - I have one. - I don't have one. - Let's take it. - This is the fourth best Wilmsmith movie of all time. - Fourth best, what do you have in the top three? - I wrote this down. Okay, well, I forget. Okay, I'm not, okay. Men in black, I do, I do four bad boys, top three. Hitch, then focus. I think focus is better than all of a serious movie. I think these two movies are better than all of the series movies. - I'll go hotter. I'd have focus ahead of Hitch. - Woo. - That's tough. - I think focus. - Focus good. I don't, Margaret Rodney brought something out of him that no other actress brought out of it. - They had better chemistry. I would say that than this movie. - She tapped into something. - If I had to honest take is that this is probably, I mean, six to three separation exists, but you could make an argument that this is Wil's best performance, or this is the movie that is, to me, this movie is more indicative of Wil's start of them than any other movie. Every other movie that Wil Smith is in, that goes crazy, has all of the things that Wil Smith, pretty cynically would go for in a movie to get people out to the theater. - Okay, I heard you. - They have aliens on these parts of themselves. - But in this movie, this is just Wil Smith, start pair of movies. That's it. So Wil Smith, if you like Wil Smith, you will love Hitch. But that was kind of, I am legend too. - Not really. - But we're just trying to love him. - That's a post-apocalyptic, that's a post-apocalyptic loan. - But that movie is not good. - It's not as good. - No, it's not. - But it's a post-apocalyptic vampire movie that's based on a very, very popular piece of fiction. - You're making the exact same case I made when I voted for Drake May for MVP, and got a lot of backlash, but I stand by it, Wil Smith was the MVP of this movie, and he elevates the surrounding cast in a way he does not have to in any of the other movies that I mentioned. And I think that's a totally valid. - That was Dianne Roussini's, and people for The March Action. We got Rappaport, Roussini. - I thought this was gonna come where Dianne would label and people would, you know. - It's like, I actually thought you were singing a fan with him. - I was like, this is what you're talking about. - Somebody you love ever with someone, I was like, do not, my brain was like, don't do it, don't do it. - I have a high test take, go for it. I'm pretty proud of this one. As you know, I love the Fast and Furious franchise. Although we probably could have stopped after eight, nine, 10, haven't seen. I got off. Ava Mendes, the biggest mistake they made in the franchise. She's in two, she was underrated, two's borderline, like fast enough and two fast two furious. - Two fast two furious. - She plays an undercover cop and two fast. - Yeah, she's great. - She's great. - She's with Paul Walker. We never see her again. - They bring her back for one scene. - They bring her back for one scene, I think in seven. - Like a scene, or five or something. - Because once they start designed that they're gonna connect their world, they're like, oh, remember all of these people, they still do this. - She should have been back and four. She should have been in the franchise from that moment on. I don't know why she was and I don't know what happened. - Is she the best female lead of the entire franchise to you? - Well, I said this on one of the fast pods I did with Shay. If you just flip her with Michelle Rodriguez from the first movie on, it's a better franchise. - I don't agree with that. - That was my hot take. I think for the first time. - You know what you were, we got a different kind of, she's like, cool. - Yeah, I think even men, I just could have done it. - I know, but like, to regard these, yeah. - Regardless, we should have had both. - She should have been in there. - She should have been, I don't know. - They bring the rock instead. I'm not against having the rock, but I just think, I don't know why they punted on her. Everyone else from a bunch of other people from fast two are in for the rest of them. Gibson, stay, becomes a man, stay. - She's right there. - Maybe she didn't want to make a man. - Yeah, she probably was from her. - Like I said, Michelle Rodriguez, powerful. - Come on. - She said there's only right now. - Why do you want me to make his woman? Why do you want his guy? - I am the female of this franchise. She's out. Now, but I don't know what, I don't know what they were thinking 'cause she's great and fast too. - Anyway. - You know, fast two, we weren't ready. If we were to know that the whole, this is my thought about fast two. If we didn't know that the whole band was going to eventually get back together, we'd have loved and respected fast two more. But we thought that Vin Diesel and all those people were done with that franchise. - Vin Diesel wasn't in fast two and then broke everyone's brains. - That's what happened. - But it was in fast two, it's a good movie. If we didn't know Walker Vehicle. - If we didn't know that everybody was coming back, we'd have loved fast two with the whole deal and everything like that. - Yeah, but it was like, you're making fast two about Vin Diesel. - Were you ranked fast two if you ranked them all? - I mean, it's not as good as-- - Did you eat on this? Have you done the whole thing? - No, but it didn't. - If you have one, four, five, six, seven and some order have to be the first five. - Which one took your drift? - Three. - Wow. - Three's really good. - Yeah, three, seven. - Two or three are in the running for the six five. - Took your drift, yeah. - They brought Bawa, but-- - I support two and three. - It's not the Bawa. - Yeah, good. - Yeah. But once we get to eight with Charlize, it starts kind of going sideways and then we're on ice and yeah. Casting what ifs? - Pat Naswald was the second choice for the Kevin James part of it. - Oh God. - I mean, I like Pat Naswald, but that-- - Yeah, that's exactly-- - No, you don't like Pat Naswald. - I love that as well. - No, you don't. - He's also in King of Queens with Kevin James. - Pat Naswald was in King of Queens? - Yeah, he plays this other-- - He's a second. - Someone just said his name, Bill, and you went, "Oh God, I don't think you like him." - No, for this movie, it doesn't make any sense. - A picture of Alexander's scarred. - Yes, this is the cameo. - Is the tabloid photograph when it talks about a Lagerist cheating boyfriend? - Incredible interview I came across where he said he was devastated that his actual scenes were cut. The concept of Alexander's scarred guard being devastated by having a scene cut from Hitch is just so funny, but he was not in movies then. He just did true blood. - Like my friend talked about this on the Wet Lies Beneath pod by a friend from high school, Scott Carino was Michelle Fifer's dead husband in her picture. - Oh really? - We were all excited. It's like Scott got a break. - That movie is so scary. - Yeah, it's a good movie. - It's so scary. - And then Ali Larder provided the face and body shots for the fake starlet and some Esquire magazine thing they did as well. That's it. They weren't a lot of cast in what ifs. Best act I'd share for Donovan. Dianne Waiters has to be chipped the bar guy. Unless you go polypatin. - You can go polypatin. Dianne Waiters, you can go vans too. - Vans, I feel like. like his scenes are pretty. - Vance Monson? - Pretty memorable. Wait, there was another, that Jola Trulio has a great moment in this movie. Let's be dating scene from Brooklyn 9/9 shows he gets pushed aside instantly by a laugh on my song. - Recasting couch director city. So I can offer you Stanley Tucci as Ava Mendes' boss, instead of the guy we got. - So Alan, Arkansas, or something? - Yeah. - Can we walk through Will Farrell and the Kevin James part really quick? - Okay, when we look up 2005, Will Farrell, 'cause I got to visualize this. - It's old schools, like two years before, Anchorman just happened, he's a huge star. Just, can we talk it out for a second? - I think it worked from a comedy standpoint, but you know what the only thing about it is? - He's too big, he's too tall. - He's too tall. - He can't be taller than most of it. - But we'll spend six three. - I know, but Will Farrell, - We'll spend six four five. - If you're taller than him in that scene, it doesn't look like he's a little growing you as well. - If they made the movie now, who would be the, like Kevin James type? Who goes after it? - Do we even have these people? - That's what I'm asking, like, is there like a guy? - Josh Gad. - Maybe Josh Gad, but even Josh Gad got a little, Josh Gad kind of smooth. I think he is. I don't know, I don't think we have the funny athletic fat guy anymore. I don't think there's been a one, every generation had one that it was, I look for it at the combined area. - Is that right? - And Blue Shee, then it was Farley, then it was Kevin James. And then even Jack Black got in there for a little while, like Farley. - Jack Black would be, yeah. - But like, but the funny athletic fat guy that could really move around a little bit. - Jack Black could have been in this too. - Yeah. - I think Seth Rogen now would be a different character, but it could be really funny, that he's getting coached up by Will Smith to go after. - Jonah Hill, Jonah Hill, no. - Seth Rogen, it kind of happens a little bit. There's Charlize Theron movie with him. - That's such a great movie. - I love that movie. - Oh, it's such a great romantic. What's that called again? - I can't try and ask Craig if that was a real watchful. - I like that movie. - I love that movie. - I love that movie. - I love that movie. - I do that with you. I love that movie. - You love that movie? It's so great. - I have a lady in the movie. - It's so funny. - I can't get Sean and Chris there with it either. - Why not? - I really like that movie. - It's incredible. - No, I'm fantasy not fucking with that. - Yeah. - It's incredible. - Yeah. - Oh, thank you. - Oh, Craig, you have a flex. - I'm gonna play it right down the middle. Big Kahuna Burger, best use of food or drink. The Benadrol, through a straw. Maybe you want to try it. - Looks fun. That just seemed great to me. Him drunk going through the park, sipping Benadrol, out of the bottle, through a straw. I've never seen that before. That was great. - Bill, Craig, what? Craig wants to be a lean. - No. - Yeah. - That just looked fun to me. How much Benadrol can you sip through a straw before you knock out? - No idea. - Have a stroke or something. - Also, there's another food and drink moment. There's a brief scene where Ava Mendez and her best friend are at a place called Rice the Riches. - Rice the Riches. - Rice the Riches. - It's in Soho. - Which is just a rice pudding? - Yes. - This is so 2005. I was still in Sausage. - What is this place? - This is a place for real? - Yes. - It's in Soho. - I think it's in Soho. - It's just a rice pudding place. - It was a rice pudding place. - It was like a hot spot. - Rice pudding place. - There's so much great, like, mid-July's New York. Yes, mid-July's New York. Like, the speed dating is like at Budacan. - Because they show the exterior of rice. Which is really quickly. I'm like, wait a minute. I used to go there, I used to go there with my friends. - It makes the best rice pudding. - I love rice pudding. - It's a big Italian thing. - Is it? - Yeah. - I guess it's like kind of like a sweet risotto. - Yeah. - It's heavy and you feel sick and tired after you eat too much food. We covered a bunch of them. The director, a couple more Will Smith shots. - Will didn't want to do the Ellis Island scene because he said, "Black people didn't come through Ellis Island." I begged him to come to Ellis Island so I could at least pitch it to him. And we tried to save the sequence. And lo and behold, his producing partner, James Lasseter, came through Ellis Island. So that's why the scene was in the movie. The other thing was, Will Smith can't swim. And they did the jet ski stuff anyway. And if you look, he's got this big ass life vest. Cause they had their $20 million movie star flying around on jet skis and thought some river. And we're very concerned about. - Isn't he on jet ski in the Miami music video? - I don't think that this is real. I think he's like a green screen. - I don't think he just like fucking. Eva Mendes was in the music video. Miami. - Yeah, great segue. I forgot she was in that until. - I like that song. It's great to know. Yeah. - She was lip syncing being Veneto on Miami. She mentioned this to Will Smith and rehearsals and Will Smith said he did not remember her. - Yeah. - Riddle. - Soundtrack had a bunch of people, including Earth, Wind and Fire is in there. Temptations. - There's a very important song. - There's a very important song on this soundtrack. What is it? - One thing by A. Marie is a brilliant, amazing song that started kind of like a lore, kind of beef that happened. Because do not go after me, be hot. One thing, don't go after me. I'm just telling, so one thing comes out and is like an amazing record, like a great record. Rich Harrison, like an amazing record. Then some people felt like on a song called Des Javout that Beyonce made a little bit after that, that the sound of one thing was kind of being recreated. - Like the boardlines contrast. - A little bit like, there were some people who felt like that there was a little swag theft from Beyonce, who is an all-time, amazing, phenomenal artist, a great mother. - I've never seen him so scary. - Yeah, just about to say. - He's like, "You can beat him." - All like a shakin. - All that stuff. I had to do a little bit before you talk about LeBron on the hispian. He's a great father. He's a great philanthropist. He's one of the greatest players we've ever seen. He's tall and handsome and all of that stuff. But there was a whole thing to where it was like, you know, they kind of jacked a little bit of swag. The one thing record is a big record. And then that big band sound kind of came in a little bit from Beyonce. And it was a whole thing. And Marie is thriving now. But kind of went AWOL a little bit after her biggest record. Like after her biggest record. - Do they have, on the NFL live, if LeBron comes up, do you have to talk about how great it is or is that just the other shift? - I can't remember the last time LeBron came up on the film. - He's like, "He's right receiver. "He's like LeBron James." And then something else goes. - You have to go to that amazing guy. - Who's that amazing guy? What a great career. - I don't know if there's that career like him. - Is there an NFL equivalent of that? We're all like, "He's unbelievable. "I would never question." I mean, it was kind of like that with Belcher for a while. Where if I ever was like, dang, he like, punted again at the 50-yard line, I'd be like, "I would do this actually. "I would totally defenester." I'd be like, "Bill Belchick has forgotten more "about football than I'll ever know." - And people do never know. - I will never know. - When Bill Belchick-- - He really shouldn't have punted there, man. That he lost like 20 days. - I mean, after the Seattle Pats that 30 seconds when he doesn't call time out, like when he walked on water, you got his back. You beat us. - Well, you know what? You're just thinking about that. You walked on water, saw the future, and saw Seattle fun. Like, he bought five years after that. - Well, what was-- - There's never been a coachy moment like that in the history of any sport. - Well, Bill is not telling you is that we have to do that at the ringer now that we got, we got rich. - Whatever. - We have to do the LeBron thing now at the ringer before we talk about it. - I've made fun of this front. This is the summer of LeBron. I went to his pin today. We're taping this July. - Yeah. - I went there today. The first three stories. Where's he going? Can he be the third option or the second? - I preview the AFC East this week. Come on a different bar. Yeah, you got your goals. Check it out. - Not a great division this year. - It's very two teams, two tiers. - I was speaking to the AFC East. This was one more half-fessor in research thing. Albert asked Egon what he thought of the design of Jets West Side Stadium. - Oh, interesting. - This was-- - It was-- - They were going to do that during the-- - It presented as a four month dunk. The four months when they thought the Jets were building a stadium on the West Side. Where the fuck would that have gone? - I was thinking about that watching the scene. - We're Hudson Yarns are kind of for where? - I guess. I'm sure we could look that up. But I was also distracted by the fact that it's like in the montage of him killing it on this date. And he says that it's kind of like a rejoinders to some D-bag and everyone's like, "Oh, he got him." And I didn't feel that way at all watching it. But it's fine. I got to say they should have a football stadium in New York City. I think it's bullshit. New York City's gigantic. There's no way they couldn't have found a place to put a 60,000 square meter. - Central Park. - Anywhere. Central Park. Okay. Rippin' through Apex Mountain. Will Smith? - Nice. - This is-- - It's got to be late 90s, for-- - Yeah, man, I'm glad. - Eva Mendez. We're right around it. - Oh, yeah. - We're in the middle. - This is the biggest movie she's ever been in. - Again, she's also acts really well in this movie. - Yeah, I think this movie's a win for her. - I think it's a win for her. - Kevin James, I think, yes. 'Cause she's still on. - Chris, oh yeah. - Absolutely, now. - Kevin James is peeing right now. - TV, movies, top 10 movie, and-- - Yeah, now you need to stop. - He's more in the men. - Was Mall Cop not like a huge hit? Am I tripping? - I think it was a hit. - Yeah, but-- - He's not TV with movies. - It was. - Okay, so everything is good. - Well, if this probably sets up Mall Cop it was one of the movies people saw of my age 'cause they're like, it would be funny if we just went and saw this movie. It's kind of like more serious or minions. - Yeah. - They were like, let's go see Mall Cop. - It was in Iran. - We're all doing it for the bed, yeah. - Benadryl. Oh, hey pecs mountain hmm. I Don't know answers. No, it's it's all the parents who realize they could give children's been and drove to their kids So they wouldn't cry in a plane doesn't work. I wouldn't that's not why I was a kid. We're for our kids Must be nice. It's given you know, I was given But you know legitimately was putting my bottle to calm me down cuz I was so hot strong. Hennessey. Yeah True story. I like graduation party. I was like Usually you run on the go have a little graduation party. Can I have a little Hennessey like my uncle David recipes I got the I got the I got the I got the Hennessey and my grandmother goes oh look What say he still likes it Still likes it like I still like it like yeah, it's like you were a high-strong little baby. We take a little Hennessey Like you stretching your mom out. We'll we'll be putting the bottle see this is why these were the greatest generations What? How's you turn that great? I don't know with like whiskey on the go with you on the ice Yeah, yeah, like we'll we'll Hennessey in there Jetskies know Amber I know for Jetskies. There's got to be something better with Jetskies, right like some bond movie or something Fucking speed to cruise control. Oh The first day sort of Eastbound and down Eastbound with multiple. Yeah. Oh, Eastbound and down Miami music video also. Yeah, Amber Valetta. I'm gonna say yes. I don't I didn't know she was in nothing else after this So yeah, men's hair waxing scenes weirdly 40 year old Virgin is same year and has a better hair wax We were the same four year old to come out first or this movie Because I don't know I think they made them both know It feels like they wanted that scene to be a big moment And then they had to change it because of 40-year-old Virgin. It feels like they wanted to be a set piece. Yeah, it's kind of yeah It goes fast and it's like weirdly. Why's it even in the movie? Yeah, Ellis Island. I'm gonna say no for apex mountain No, I don't think it's gonna save us probably earlier Not even in movies because it would be the golf author post 9/11 New York is back Movies like just like we're New York as an actual character which we should have mentioned at the top But this is a real New York movie great New York movie and it was one of the first ones where you felt like oh, yeah, New York There's only one to me that I think that is close Spider-man even though spider-man comes out pretty soon after yeah, but like spider-man It was like a look Things are still happening. They actually have to take out Remember that spider-man advertisement the trailer they had was he made a web between the twin towers Yeah, so like next year that next year spider-man was like oh my god. It's New York again. She did still happening Cruiser Hanks. It's the most obvious cruise in a while. Yeah cruise as the Will Smith character. Yeah Basically doing Frank Mackey from from Magnolia in Hitch T.J. Mackey So T.J. Mac who's Frank Mackey? Frank T.J. Mackey. Yeah, you can argue to cruise in Hanks Could Hanks play Albert Brennan? I think he's too handsome. Yeah, he's too tall to say something So will so will and Tom Cruise obviously famously famously best friends for a long time not because they shared the same religion or anything like that but What if will calls Tom Cruise and gets Tom Cruise to do two days on set as Vance Munson as Vance Munson Tom Cruise is never get hit by like two two days on set as Vance Munson. I can't wait They've never done a movie together. They have never not one. I don't think so It's kind of weird. Oh special category. How would Van Lathen get out of this one? Okay, where we going? Someone finds out Van is actually been the date doctor all along. What do you say to even men does this? I want it Look directly at her and I say yes, I am the date doctor. I got I got a standpoint. I at number one You're not paying my bills. I don't worry about that's the first thing. So I got to say that that that don't work It's not about whether or not it works. It's about me standing up for myself. Right number two direct I can't act all direct I can't stand the entire time. Okay. This is who I am. I'm a day doctor and by the way what I do Is different than what you do blood sucking parasite Okay, like what I do is I help people find love look at all these pictures. See these pictures These are weddings these are children. This is why I'm putting to the world Well, don't you go home and think about the fact that what you put into the world is negativity and people's business How dare you're gonna judge me? You got judge me. Who are you to talk to me? Yeah, that's pretty good. Yeah, I know it's good. I'm like good. You didn't get out of anything I did get out of it. You know why you mean you think about it. Do you know why she takes five steps and then she turns around and she goes Hitch what I'm like, okay, I'd like to ruse in the comment I made earlier about how he should have a dating advice show I actually seem like an unanswerable question, which is does Hitch still date doctor after getting exposed Also, how does Kevin James still earn a living? Oh, there was one after the next day I don't feel like he actually quits because she rehires them too. So she rehires him and he's okay I have this I have this and what happens next day like this nigga Hitch broke like Hitch is like you're like she's she's blown up Hitch's whole thing like Hitch now now Hitch this relationship between Hitch and even Mendez that's not gonna work out. All right because you guys are wrong Okay, give it to me because I had this as well Um, first of all, he's famous from the soul thing. He writes a book. Okay. Oh, give it to you. It's like a two-million-dollar book advance He's not every morning show. I also don't think next time the view we have Alex Hitchens I don't think the secrecy is that fundamental to him's ability to do the job. This is 2005 People don't have everything on each other like he could still work with guys The only problem is well, you know what if he rehab if he really rehabilitated the date doctor moniker And like he's like a positive guy. Then maybe it's not that big of a deal. Does the book Makes them rounds comes out in paperback podcasts. They're starting. Yeah, yeah, yeah, you know seven. Oh seven He has like the first therapist podcast. He's making 50 million a year. He's got his own he's got his own unweld network. See guys. This is he's got the well network This if you're ever wondering what the difference is this the difference. I didn't see it, but look he already Already put a claim in it's why your business man. You know that guy the date doctor. You think you want to do a pot The date doctor pod. It's like the daily the date doctor pod So I like five of them uh pick a nits So Albert is this clumsy loser who's knocking over coffees them then but it's also a good dancer and athletic Well, let's pick a side. He's not a good dancer. Well, he's athletic. He can move He's the horrible dancer, but he's the point of it is that he's like, you clumsy Were you watching that scene? But he's athletic, he can move and do stuff Making the piece of the coffee is don't go make you not gonna make it a little cute to it. Is he? Is he clumsy or coordinated? Kevin James is athletic. Kevin James is definitely athletic. He is athletic. He's athletic But I think the character of Albert Brennan is not supposed to be coordinated. I don't even think the way they present the character I don't even think he can do this stay within your self-dance. Right. Because they're making it seem like this guy's like a fucking disaster I don't know. I could never get a handle on that. Hitches shirt is torn from his body in the cap by the cap Uh-huh. Then he gives it back to him dry cleaning. I fixed your shirt. Oh, yeah. How do you fix the shirt? That's a great point I think I torn it in nine things But what kind of tail or fix the shirt? It's a good one He's drinking Benadol like a dacre. I had that one the big thing for me Allegra's getting marriage is a famous person a lot of interest in her life as we've established this whole thing and then this gossip call and that's basically almost ruins her marriage And then she's like, yeah, invite her With hitch Oh, yeah, yeah, bring her what could go right? Like it's over, you know Now she's telling Hitch keep that lady home fuck her see this is how y'all do I'd be like, you know, that's your girl. My girl won't come to the way Y'all good. We come into the way we come in up. That's what y'all do. Y'all pay for us at the New York standards standard But she's also at she's now Convince and understands at that point that Hitches interference actually had nothing to do with why she fell in love with algorithm What would make her like Avon Mendes's character just the fact that they boys and how you supposed to do it is that your girl meeting Avon Mendes and Avon Mendes complimenting her bag. I have one gigantic very pit personal picking. Did you have okay? I have one gigantic very personal picking it The boss at the gossip column in a different movie this guy cares about the life personal life the workload The work life balance of this person I've been there. Yeah, that guy doesn't give a fuck. He's like you haven't come up with anything in two days Like hey, you know this person go get me the story. Hey, I might break up that marriage. I don't care Yeah, like we you're hooked into this story. I don't care if it breaks up with your relationship I don't care what it breaks up go get the story and bring it back Like him then being in that type of benevolent Being in that racket business guy. No, no sir No way shape. What would you have for nitpicks? Uh, I don't know what anyone else at the newspaper does all day like that the guy had time to just Be heard like gay bestie who pretends to be the check. What does he do? I don't know Um, yeah, was he like covering high school sports for them or don't get it at all. I had, well, I was confused about Kevin James's stuff. Okay, here's one. Here's a very, very nitpicking one. So she when she said and she watches Jerry McGuire to get try to get over, you know, screwing things up with Hitch, women don't drink, eat, whip cream out of the bottle. That's something that men think women do and women don't do that. Maybe I'm sure that someone in the comments will say they've done it, but I'm telling you it's not a thing. It's a fake thing. I mean, just to spray and smell. Yeah, I've never seen women do that. Rocky road ice cream. Like what's your, what's your ice cream, but would never take a thing of cool whipping go. It's funny, but daughter did do this to her teens a few times, but it now would never do it. Cream out of it, but I think it's like you kind of like a kid thing. It's something that's a very guy thing to do. Yeah, when you think about it, never mind. Sequel, prequel, prestige, TV, but cast are untouchable. I think they should do a sequel. I think they should do Hitch too. Yeah, I think they should do a sequel. What will spend in the sequel? Yep. He not too old to be getting up to the shenanigans. He's like, he could be, he could have to be brought out of retirement to hit you up. Hitch is placed right now in this climate will be perfect. Bring Hitch. Hitch does the whole thing. The world needs Hitch. A little spendth made a movie since the movie. I mean, since the Oscars were moving. Yeah. Yeah. That boy's through. That boy's came out. He made a emancipation. A emancipation came on. I know. Yeah, but that was made before. It just came out after. Right. It was good. I thought that was good. You like that, huh? Craig. That's my guy. If the slide didn't happen, he probably would have gotten an Oscar num for that movie. Really? I think so. Well, all I'm saying is I personally don't think we're going to do this. Every time we do a movie, we would not done two in a row with me and you. I don't think that he's as in the dirt as you think that he is. I think he can only play the characters from the past, but I don't think he can be likeable, carry movie Will Smith for a while. Well, he wasn't back at war though. So like, that was already gone. Like, there was, there was enough proof of Will Smith's career. King Richard was actually perfect movie for him at that point because it was a prestige. Great. That was the trickier thing than the baggage is just his age. Right. Like, a lot of the roles that we're talking about, somebody at this age, it just doesn't really make sense. Is this movie better with Wayne Jenkins, Fergie the Flores, Zayn Lowe, Robert Evans, Dr. Charles Nichol, Ted Levine, Liam X or somebody else. It couldn't come up with anybody. Levine, I'd like Hitch giving advice to Ted Levine. Hey, I got a lot of notes. Boy. Maybe, maybe the pit, maybe the house, maybe the pit when you keep people down every place, maybe, a new place. I don't think I think what would like the butterflies. We got to change a lot. That should be Hitch too. He gets James gum as a client. She's just trying to figure it out. Probably an answer for questions. I did write that. I did Will Smith have more sexual attention with Eva Mendez or Kevin James. Yeah. Nick's Grizzlies March 24th, 2003 or 2004. Grizzlies 111, Nick's 97, Marbury at 23 and 10. How good saw 23 for the Grizzlies. We'll get a year. Yeah. That was right after the Marbury trade. Ever in the New York was like, Nick's your back. It couldn't have gotten worse. Is this sports event, game, whatever, actually a good setting for a first date? No, it's like a third date. Yeah. We've spent a little time together now. I'm trying to impress you. But once you get to that threshold, it's a perfect date. A lot of stuff happening. People watching a lot of opportunities for conversation. You can eat all of that stuff. I'm going to parse this out. Baseball, amazing. Basketball, very context dependent. Football, nightmare. Well, football includes travel. And it's just tense and people are yelling and standing and every play matter. I can say basketball was great, great, great for dates. Because I went to a lot of South of games. My dad never never wasn't really cared about. Well, it was bad South of the team. So it was fun to go. And you could learn, you got to feel for people and you could explain what was going on in like it. Baseball is good. I knew a guy that would take girls on dates out here to high school sports. Like Friday night lights. Like a Friday night game. Like the biggest football game. Well, he would be like, you'd say, Hey, you know, there's this young kid that I mentor or whatever. Okay. All right. Yeah. So like that. Then they go watch Pally High Play. Somebody like then they sit out there and he'd be like yelling like, Yo, he had a whole thing. He played on my league basketball team. And this guy's name was Van Lenton. That's actually a powerful move. Because then you're like mentally taking her back to being in high school. You're on the bleachers. There's a lot of like pheromones. It's also cheap. It's like fun. It's cheap. You look like you care. He's like, yeah, he's like, I'll take it. It's like, I'll take it. I took a date to the South, the game once. And she got up and half time and got her stuff because she thought the game was over. I figured that was not a keeper. That was one one day now. You think that's what she was thinking. She was like, I can't wait to go. She actually, there's so much about that. She was like, I was going to ask an unanswerable question. Yeah. How much do you think Hitch was charging in 2005? A lot. What do we talk about the apartment? Like, are we talking like 20 grand, 10 grand, 5 grand? I would say probably 1,500 a week. This apartment was really nice. Really nice. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Okay. Because this is going to take a while. Yeah, 1,500 a week. Yeah. Is it like half up front? Then if it works, you pay the second half. Is it all up front? I think you go into it saying, I have no guarantee. There's no guarantee that it goes where you want it to go. I can only give you the best opportunity. But how did you find customers? Where are you now? We're referrals. They say in the movie. I know. But like, really? Like, what guy is going to be really excited to tell other guys that they've found? Right. They use you. No, guys would absolutely tell other guys. How about to say, apparently, y'all? Y'all don't want us to get in the middle of y'all friends' relationships and all kinds of stuff like that. Apparently, y'all. I would love if I had a friend who was, like, unlucky in love and obsessed with women who were out of their, their, his league. I would love to be able to not listen to them and say, Hey, just call this guy and watching. My idea for a romcom is Senator on my wife who always thinks she can set people up and I think she's like, Oh, for 99. And the name of the movie would be the 100th setup. And it would be like, if I get to 100, I'll stop doing this. But the 101 is the one. Actually, yeah. I just sold an Netflix book set up. And in the process, she falls in love herself. For how interesting, or the 100th solid idea. Let me work. Let me do the 100th setup. The guy falls in love with the guy. No, the guy falls in love with her because she's single and she's always trying to set people up and failing. And then so it's not a wife. Or she's a divorce. No, the lead has to be a single woman. I think there's another way you could go. Like another way you could go is, so your character tells her because like you start the movie with a terrible date that's happened at your house between two people. Your character tells her, Hey, you can't set nobody else up because this is ruining my life. Then you fake, you tell your buddy, Hey, hey, she's going to set you up, but you're telling him, you can't be in love with the woman. I need you to go do this. And then that girl finds out an hour in the movie. Oh, you made it bet that you wouldn't fall in love with me. And then like you and then you and your wife getting to it is like, Hey, I want this to stop, but these two crazy kids in the fall in love. What about a movie going where we were talking earlier about like interfering where a husband and a wife have two friends who want or the wife's trying to set up maybe like she has a friend who's just never lucky in love trying to set her up with your male friend and you're trying to stop it at the same time. So you're actually going against each other and you don't know. It's like bridewars a little bit. A little bit like bridewars. I guess thing. Craig, don't set anyone up. That's my advice. You're pretty early in this marriage thing. There's no upside. We have case scenario is they end up together and maybe you're glad to dinner with them a couple of times. We have worst case scenario is like 19 things. Yeah, we had a bad set up situation. One of my friends set up another one of my friends. They did it for a year. Didn't work out. Nobody really liked the relationship it ended and they were like, okay, never again. I got one last one. It's about a black dude in LA. You meet him, right? And you decide you want to set him up and you're talking to him. And he's like, I really, I escaped this really terrible place to where nothing goes right for black people. And you say, where is this place? And he goes, it's called Boston. And to pay the reparations. You have to find him. Why are you going to make a jail real Russell story? I thought that was going to end with him moving to Philadelphia. I was waiting for that. Remember Billy you'd most want for the movie? Wait, what? Remember Billy you would most want for the movie? I guess that I mean, I was very interested in this. the scuba suits personally. - So I really liked he had this thing behind him at one point, the Will Smith character, dynamic dating diagram. And it was like the size of that diehard poster. And I thought that'd be a good artifact for this to be cracked. That was super weird to have in his apartment, by the way. Like you would never have that out. - It's so weird to have guys like me. - It's just funny to have that like over there. You know, I always, I want, 'cause at this time this was one of the, when we saw this movie in theaters, the fact that Will could control his whole apartment from the road. That was a big deal in the mid 2000s, where you could do that. You were like the man, like the whole deal. - I know you'd want, it's the walkie-talkies. - Yeah, the walkie-talkies, right? - That's easy. - That's the one here. Coach Finstack, Mr. Maraguer, best words, life lesson. Life is not the amount of breaths you take. It's the moments to take your breath away. - No. - So many lines. - Wake up every day like it's on purpose. - Sure. - You don't need gimmicks. True love doesn't need gimmicks to be my life lesson. - Best double feature trace. I have focus. - Yeah, come on, obvious. - Yeah, six reasons of separation, which I watched after I watched this, just because Will is so charming. - You know, I love that movie. - And he's so charming in that. But at one scene, after they get in the tuxedos and they're riding through the thing, and blue-colleen 'cause hair back a little bit. Will just show up, offers it. - I love that movie. No, I have nobody to do that. I'm rewatchable, so I can't do that movie or the funniest ones. - Don't look at me. The kids in that movie, the movie's really good. - You saw my Heather Graham in them? - No, I'm talking about the parents. - Oh, oh, yeah. - All their kids in college. - That's what mom left you. - I mean, we just did the double feature. Crazy stupid love. - No, probably. - It's crazy. - They'll pair up together perfectly. - I hesitate to ask, who won the movie? - Oh, Jesus Christ. It's one of the, yeah. It's like, who won Terminator, too? It's like, oh, yeah, yeah, it's Will. It's Will. - No. Kevin, you have to make it a Kevin James? - Kevin James comes close. It's still Will Smith, but your category is wise. - I think Will Smith does win the movie. But I think Kevin James is very close. - I agree. - And Will Smith wins the movie. - That's not overthink, he does. But Kevin James is an awesome movie. - Will Smith wins the movie, but Kevin James did make me really think about this. And if you're talking about the concept of winning the movie, Will Smith was already winning with every movie he did. - At the time, yeah. - Kevin James really needed a movie like that. - Yes, this was like his big breakout, right. - What you think about that category, 'cause it happens. Like, you almost come, somebody almost comes and still somebody else's movie. It doesn't, sometimes it's just outright still the movie. But then, in this case, and in true lies, I think Arnold still wins. I think Will Smith still wins, but like, raise or thin, almost. All right, Craig, let's hear your review. You called for this movie, so we know we're gonna think. - Yeah, this is a millennial classic. This is like on my Mount Rushmore of the millennial movies I've seen a million times that we haven't done yet. I mean, you guys, yeah, I think Kevin James and Will Smith, two of the better physical comedy actors, and that's why that dance scene is just like, two people truly at the peak of their game. Even just the way Will Smith bounced back and forth is like so smooth. And Kevin James doing his thing, it's so good. I think they went four for four in the casting. Like, it's just-- - They really did. - Yeah. - It's just really good across the board. We already talked about this, but-- - Also, I think Will Smith's advice in this movie's good, like, what Mino is saying? I think the 9010 is good. I think the dance stuff-- - He makes a lot of good points. - I think stay here when you're dancing is good. He's just like, listen to him. - It's possible to not watch that scene and-- - He's the best advice in the movie. If you're a man, do that-- - About dancing. - Dancing. - If you're a woman, I was watching him thinking like, yeah, I might actually do this. - It is so smart, just do that. It's like Sean Payton talking about Josh Allen. - Speaking of Sean Payton. - He's gonna throw interceptions. - Kevin James played Sean Payton. Do you remember that? - Oh, yeah. - In the Sean Payton movie, right? - Sean Payton movie. - This memory, no, that happened, right? This is not a fever dream. - He did. - Sean Payton movie. - Do they made a Sean Payton movie about New Orleans, like, the Super Bowl season? - Yeah. It's called-- - Was it-- was the movie-- - It's called-- - It's called-- - I can't believe it exists. - Home team. - Home team. - Kevin James, like-- - Oh, it's like one of those things. - What was it about-- - Adam Sandler produced it. - What was it about when Kevin-- - When he got suspended and had to coach a-- - Oh, yeah, sorry, that's what it's about, yes, yes. - I didn't see that movie. - I couldn't bring myself to watch. - It really happened. - At the same time. I couldn't bring myself to watch. - I just think Kevin James could have been a bigger comedy star. And I don't really know why he wasn't. - I don't think his choices-- - I think the-- - The Paul Blarmer. - The Paul Blarmer. - The Paul Blarmer, Kevin Hart. - The Paul Blarmer was like 2010. I don't know why he wasn't-- - And all those great movies-- - I mean, look, he's one of those guys that they spun him and for some reason it didn't happen. They spin a lot of guys and the guys stay around, but for some reason they spun him. And he had successful comedic actor without a doubt. - When you're on a show like that, you make so much money, like King of Queens, he's loaded to life. - Do you think zoomers just think he's the meme? - Yeah. - Of him standing-- - Do you think they have any awareness that he's more than that? - I think he could make the case Paul Blarmer in his career. - God damn it. - Well, because I think it's like, well, that's Paul Blarmer. That's the Fat Mall cop. And then since 2009, it was like, well, now everybody just thinks he's Paul Blarmer. - I don't know, the grown-ups universe helped him a lot. Those movies are pretty huge. - Successful. - I don't know. I think Paul Blarmer was really-- - It's better than 125. Those are like giant movies with my kids' generation. - Yeah. - This choice is, like he never, like if he was in the appetite, like if he had done better written movies, he probably would have had more longevity. - Yeah, this movie shares something-- - It was a lot to do. - Yeah. - With Crazy Super Love, is that these movies make the cities that they are in-- - Yeah. - Look like cities you want to follow. - Like he could have these Steve Carell and Crazy Super Love. - Yeah, he could have. - Like beautiful looking movies with beautiful people and all that stuff. - He could have been Gosling in La La Land. Do you really think about that? - Yeah. - What's happening? - Now, could he have been Batman? - No. - Could he have been Will Smith in "Investigation"? - I think he made all the choices he made for a reason. I think he was just going for like, almost like what Jack Black is doing now with like he's just doing specific type of movies and making money from him. - He got jacked for MMA movie. Like legitimately-- - Yeah, I remember that. - Yeah, yeah, yeah. - Really? - He got jacked for a season of "King of Queens" as well. - Did he? - Yeah, he got fit. His character gets fit. - What was the movie you said you were going to come back for? At some point? - We got excited about it early. - Well, I'm almost trying to get you a new game night. Oh no, you were-- - No, it's just a little Rogen Charlize movie. - I love that movie. People complain if we do that though, 'cause I feel like nobody's had people seen that movie long shot. - Well, that's why we haven't done it yet. - People show it to you, it's so good. - It needs like 10 years to marinate with the-- - Well, it's been 10 years. When did that come out? Pre-pandemic. - The last 2019 is pre-pandemic. - I freaking love that movie. - It's also like Charlize-- - I've rewatched it several times. - Yeah, she's great in that movie. - Who wrote that? - There's good side characters in that movie. - She's starting to become underappreciated. - Charlize Sarah? - Mm-hmm. - She's got the goat in my house. - Not after the Odyssey. Oh, I haven't seen it yet. - She plays Calypso. - I haven't seen it yet. - It's very good casting. (laughing) - Is she naked? That's the only take away I have from your boy. - There's no naked posture right now. - No nudity in the movie. She's just a god in that island who has to make another god wanna stay for seven years. - Do you enjoy the Odyssey? - I thought it was amazing. Yeah, a lot of us, what everyone's saying. - Can't wait. - There's a lot of people who haven't seen it. It's pretty great. It's a pretty great movie. - All right, thanks for doing Hitch. I forget who suggested it out of the two of you, but it was one of you. Or maybe it was Craig. - We talked about focus on the last episode, not Hitch. - Good to see you, Meena Kimes. - Good luck with this last month before football kicks in. - I'll see you. - Yeah, I'm coming on your pod. - Bill is doing power rinkings. - Coming on a power rink. - Yeah, I told her she couldn't have you on 'cause you were on 19 pots. - Sorry. - No, you can go on. You got to get her on tailgate. People were surprised when we did last pod that we already knew each other. In a pleasant way, I think. - Why? - I don't know, but the reaction I saw was like when people see a picture of a duck and an elephant as friends or something. - You were like, you were like, that's adorable. - Look at that. - Look at that. - I'm coming on tailgate next month too. - It's UCLA football time. We're making a real run here. - I don't know if I'm ready. - I really can't. - Dude, I went to the UCLA game. It was rough last year. - I know they have my coach now, Chessney. My guy. - Okay. - I tell you something real quick, quick take. College football better be ready. UCLA is serious. They are not fucking around. - Is it still the quarterback? What's his name? - It doesn't matter. - He was bad. - He told my Nico. Don't bet against Bob Chessney. - I think they're making, they're going to tear a little office too. - I believe it. - Or whatever. - Just from being there and walking through the way. - Dan might dump us here. This is it. - For you. - He moved from the Louisiana LA. - See how you, see how you WZN for LA? - Now you're going to dump us here for UCLA. - No, this is it. - This is it. - Never happened. I've never been as interested in how college football season was going to play out to the UCLA season this year. - Jeez. - I'm serious. - There we go. All right. Thanks Greg. Thanks to everybody else. We'll see you next week.

FAQs

Hitch is a 2005 romantic comedy starring Will Smith as a 'date doctor' who teaches men how to woo women, while he himself falls for a reporter. It was one of the most successful rom-coms of its time.

It was rare because it focused on the male lead, Will Smith, rather than the female lead, and it became the most successful rom-com up to that point, thanks largely to Smith's charisma and likability.

The hosts discuss that as a Black male lead, it was difficult to cast a romantic interest that would appeal to global audiences without alienating certain groups. The decision to cast Eva Mendes was seen as a way to 'split the difference'.

His likability was central to his success, making movies like 'Hitch' work. The hosts debate how the Oscars slap affected this, with some saying it removed his 'cape' of being the most likable guy on the planet.

The hosts highlight several, but a standout is the dance lesson scene where Kevin James's character dances awkwardly, causing Will Smith to struggle not to laugh. It's a hilarious and memorable moment.

The hosts note that 'Hitch' successfully balanced romance and comedy, which was key to its success. It had genuine funny moments and a believable romantic plot, unlike some other rom-coms that skewed too far one way.
