HERITAGE COLLECTION: Occupy Wall Street + The OC

In this season two finale of "Ride," hosts Benito Skinner and Mary Beth Barone celebrate the end of their podcast season with a mix of humor, nostalgia, and social commentary. Benito declares he's "riding for The O.C.," the early 2000s teen drama he's been rewatching at an intense pace. He dives into detailed observations about the show's characters, including Ryan Atwood's leather armband, Marissa Cooper's tragic storylines, Summer's "bimbo rights" appeal, and Julie Cooper's standout performance. He praises the show's fashion, music, and complex female characters, while also critiquing its inconsistencies and dark moments. Mary Beth, in contrast, rides for Occupy Wall Street, recalling the 2011 movement's 59-day protest in Zuccotti Park and her personal experience witnessing Occupy Portland during a family wedding. She reflects on the movement's slogan "We are the 99%," its artistic energy, and its impact on her political awakening, despite initially dismissing it as a teen. The hosts also engage in playful banter about awkward straight men, bad-smelling dogs, and their upcoming series "Overcompensating," which they tease will premiere on Prime Video. They thank their listeners, invite questions, and hint at surprises for the next season, ending with their signature "ride or die" energy and a promise to return soon.

The following podcast is a Dear Media production. I'm Benito Skinner. I'm Mary Beth Barone. And this is Ride. Hello and welcome to the Ride Heritage Collection. The Heritage Collection. This is something new we're trying where we are going to release iconic heritage episodes of the podcast in no particular order and we're going to retitle them so you know exactly which iconic moment to expect. Moments that come to mind, the lesbian cop at Ride Live. Massive. We're talking about I'm your sister. I was there. It was rare. NDA. And of course, how many chickens there are in the world. I just got a boner. Oh my god, wait. Mary Beth just cut her finger and is bleeding. I guess we have to go. Enjoy this episode. We hope it's a tasty treat for you. We're going to have fun going through the archives and picking out these episodes for you. Think about what we're doing right now. We do exist in the world. Isn't that trippy to think about? Let's go. Let's go on the journey for the Ride Heritage Collection. How do these things stay in the air? California. California. Feeling so amigo. Let me go now. I haven't done that all season, but I am feeling so amigo to be here for the finale of season two is what we do. We did it, girl. And I just did all of that again because we were recording. I can always do two takes. Just don't ask me to do three, Kat. No, I would never do something such as that. I'm wearing loafers. I'm ready to talk. Okay. Well, I guess we should just get into it. Are there any housekeeping items you have for me? I'm going to check my list. Oh, you want a finale? We want this one to be 15 minutes. Quick and dirty. Well, it's 15 minutes. Today was a crazy day because the teaser's out and I'm fine to date the pod. Wow. We're dating the pod for the very first time. For the very first time in podcast history, we are dating the pod. We do record this sometimes before it comes out. We record this sometimes before it comes out. It's not live, which just is, I think that's a bummer and I'm sorry. Hey, I wish we could do it live every week. Teaser's out to end on my girl with a headset. And I knew that Baroni HQ would eat that up. And put me next to the teacher from Lizzie McGuire. Of course. In her headset. On that topic of overcompensating, which I sometimes call the OC, but then I know I'm going to confuse people. Well, sometimes when I try to make the graphics of me, you, Adam Wally, it's OC, but we are siblings, but we end up as Benjamin McKenzie and Misha Barton. But you know what? Let it rock. Let it rock. It's just a reference. It's a reference. It's just a reference visually. We are, we are. Wally is so summer and Adam is so sad. Do you remember Youth of the Nation from Blue Crush? That feels like post 9-11 media, even though I'm not sure if it was. My football highlight reels were post 9-11 media, to be clear. Oh my God. Oh my God. You know what? Fuck. You know what I heard the other day? And I go, we didn't talk about that on the pod. I'm here without you, baby. But you're still on my lonely mind. I think about you. That's you, baby. That was about like going to Afghanistan. And I dream about you all the time. Fuck. Wake me up when September ends. So I didn't like Green Day for a while because they hated George Bush. Little did I know. Little did I know. Yeah. One day I would not only be standing the band, I would also be riding for Occupy Wall Street. Now that's a, it's a spoiler. But today for the, finale, I'm riding for Occupy Wall Street. And you're riding for? It's a carjack, which I love coming up with these. I told Terry, we have a special episode coming after this one. You guys are going to love it. I said, oh yeah, it's called the school bus. And he goes, I think you guys should stop. He's like, I don't think you need to always do that. He's like, I think we get it. Also, Terry, two minutes in. Two minutes in, kid. Yes. I'm doing a carjack today. And I'm, I'm writing for something that Mary Beth was upset to bleep it with the OC. I've been rewatching it at a pace that is making people worried. One can only describe it as it's clinical. Of course. It's a clinical level. If we're doing the ANTM photo shoot, it's gluttony. I'm gluttony. It's gluttony. It's my friend. I think I said this in the last episode. And if not, I'll edit. And, you know, of course we can cut whatever we need to like, feel like fucking with you today. I don't know why, but he, yeah, he's been doing one a day and he's like, how many are you doing? And I'm like four to five, four to five. It's only five hours. It's not even long. There was, I had a break five minutes in between zooms and I almost went to watch it. And I was like, oh, okay. I can relax. It's that good. It's just that good. And can I say what else is just that good? The other OC. Overcompensating. Overcompensating. So. Yeah. Baronies, please send your questions to thisisride1atgmail.com. Any questions you have about overcompensating, questions you have about the cast, we will answer them for you. But we're not going to say how or when. We're not going to say how or when. We would never. Amazon's at the door. They're back. Oh, my God. Wait. I'm back in the bunker. I'm in the detention center. Well, yes. You posted the trailer two minutes before you were supposed to. They found me. Amazon found me. The government found me. I was in the group text with Pete Hegseth as well about Yemen. And I was like, guys, I want to be, I want to divest from this narrative. Please let me leave this group chat. I would very much like to be excluded from this narrative. That was Mary Beth in every episode we would read. Pete Hegseth. Pete Hegseth sent that text that's like, are you ready to receive information that could potentially hurt you? And I was like, I don't want it. Please, please, please, please don't tell me. But he sent it anyway. And now here I am. Catch me on a weird day. And I'm like, maybe, maybe. But that day I didn't want to. I had already been going through a lot. And have you seen Adolescence? Sorry. No, I've been actively avoiding it, actually. Whoa. I well, I feel like I got arrested last night. It's an incredible show, but it's just kind of O.C. or nothing for me right now. And I say that with love to everyone involved. Like, I've tried to watch. Other things. And I know that adolescent me and adolescence will have a moment, but I just it it made me so panicky that I had to I had to exit. And for anyone else who's feeling that way, I would say if there's a complete polar opposite of a show, we made it. And there's room for both, which is important. And I will watch Adolescence. I will watch it eventually. I just don't want to watch it right now. Let's watch it together at Coachella. Oh, perfect. Yeah. Well, I'm not going to see any of the performers. Of course not. I'm bringing my laptop to street. They're like, Hey, are you at the what? I literally almost said the Manjaro tent leaving L.A. I should move. It's the Sahara tent, my love. The Sahara tent. And we're like, we kind of have our own Sahara tent. I didn't know you're so opinionated. On that note, I did want to say that Sweet Greens are sanctuary cities for Barones. So if you ever feel unsafe or like, you know how there's like sanctuary cities for like certain demographics, Sweet Green is our is a sanctuary. Quasimodo's mom. What doors do you think she was banging down? That was a sweet green love. Oh, my God. You bring up this hunchback of Notre Dame literally every chance you get. Well, I was saying to Terry, I think there's something beautiful in the animated films that exist now, but they are so starkly different than the absolute batshit ass insane things that we grew up with. I was in the car last night and I'm like, maybe this is the woke mob's fault. No, I think it's the fact kids needed to be exposed to like trauma and heartbreak because their siblings were dying of polio and the measles. And then it became like, oh, childhood is actually something to be celebrated. People should stay kids as long as they can. And so they started making movies that were heartfelt and hopeful. But I was thinking about All Dogs Go to Heaven, too, and how I want to talk about that in season three or four. It's definitely not a season two topic because it's really like that movie is about like it's about the mob and it's about where dogs go when they die. And it's like not like. It's like fucking scary. Oliver and Company also about the mob. And on that note, Bambi, Dumbo, I mean, they're all just like so. Tarzan. Tarzan. Let's say it together. One, two, three. Chosen Family. Oh, for sure. Tell me that's not about Chosen Family. The death count and Tarzan will send its chill down your spine. And there is a full scene in Hunchback. I think I've literally talked about it. I'll talk about it again, where that nasty little priest, I think he's a priest. Don't know the official title. His song is about like being attracted to Esmeralda. It's very much like your haters are your biggest fans. That was a tough lesson for kids when she didn't end up with Quasi. I don't know what they were trying to teach us with that. In the book, she's she dies. I found that out. I didn't realize. But in the movie, you know, they don't end up like that. But in the book, I do believe she's burned at the stake. So Disney was kind of like, have you read this fucking crazy ass book? Someone I know that crime and punishment was was pitched during that time. Oh, wait, wait, wait. Hans Zimmer. I just saw a clip of Hans Zimmer talking about scoring the line king because his dad died when he was six years old and he he decided to work on that movie because his daughter was six years old and he had not worked on a movie that he his daughter could like he could share with his daughter so he watched the movie and he i have chills literally he was like i watched the movie and it is about like it is about a child losing his father and he was like admittedly with fart jokes but he was like when you hear the score it's like it is like for my fault like i wrote it for my father oh i just got chills because i just pictured oh my god that moment when fucking simba starts to go up pride rock and he goes and it's simba remember stop i used to do that as a kid i used to do that as a kid all the time impression well yeah it's it's in my arsenal james earl jones i'm literally what an incredible man i miss him i think that that's the best vocal performance he has the two best vocal performances of all time darth vader and mufasa yeah wow that's impact one of the greats that's impact kitchen and we said we're not talking about james earl jones until the finale of season two we had that conversation we said they're not ready it's in the contracts it's in the contract i want to redefine the word posthumous to mean like after you've been canceled so it's like you you can like put something out posthumously but it's like like shane gillis has had a netflix special it was like his posthumous netflix special do you get that yeah i think that's great me you're now i feel like you're just trying to get clipped by interior media you're begging for it i have a separate notes app for things i think dear media will clip you want them to clip all of this let's see if i've got anything well i have all my oc notes this is the first time i've ever taken notes for the pod pod opening let's see if there's anything that we forgot this is fly cleaners caused my breakup yeah but that feels season three or four can we keep the line though well of course yeah yeah so i was dating someone when i was like 24 25 and i said to him like i just think if i think fly cleaners will lose our stuff and let's just say like two weeks later we weren't dating anymore we lived together by the way so we'll talk about that in season three i do have a thing here about sometimes dogs smell really bad and your hand smells bad after petting them and if you have one of those dogs give it a bath I don't know why I'm like media you know what to do live that sister here's my thing I'm just like at least give me a warning now my hand smells like zutty pie and I will say it as many podcasts as it takes if the trash bin is full you can put the dog shit in it if it is empty you're a bad person I fear you can't do that I hate the idea of more surveillance but I do think like sometimes these people need to be like talking about surveillance let me say oh my god adolescence well it's just like I just was not ready adolescence was put on the tv and I did not get my consent in the way I was not mentally ready for that so not to give well here's the happy story my dad got a call a few weeks maybe a couple months ago from someone who was like I'm your cousin are so a pair of sisters married a pair of brothers so like on both sides they're cousins do you get what I mean so they're double cousins and then he came to my parents house for dinner and he's just like a lovely guy and he knows like a ton about our family history on my dad's side so it's just crazy that one like that can happen at any age you can have a new family member yeah and also just the idea what a thrill to have a double cousin two sisters marrying two brothers it's very the kids are all right but like a new spin on it exactly it's very and I think Terry would like it oh he would love he asked to watch that movie every single night and I'm like really that's your heart's desire one of these nights though I'm gonna say it to surprise my man I would love to shake Mark Ruffalo's hand and just say like thank you for everything do you get that I agree I know he gives good hugs oh my god you know what of aftershave and pipe tobacco what is that cinnamon and pipe tobacco cinnamon and pipe tobacco I scared the shit out of this woman recently because I hugged her and I went by the fireplace and she went yeah what woman who are you hugging oh okay here I go again we were doing an edit for the trailer for overcompensating and this woman who worked with the main editor I hugged her and I was like by the fireplace it blew her mind I think to have a man know anything she didn't know I was gay yet I think oh and thank you okay so men's spatial awareness is also in this in this note how many times have you seen okay picture this straight you know you're talking straight men of course this happened to me and it really it brought up a lot for me okay picture this you're walking into the Soho house into Holloway house and there are two women and one man in a semicircle having a conversation in front of the door what's that I smell what's that brand that's cow shed it's cow shed yeah keep going you're approaching the door and as you get closer you notice the man who is blocking the door the most is not moving over even slightly and in fact hasn't moved at all yeah and then you have to watch one of the women he's with put her hand on his back and physically push him out of the way of my way so I can get in the door I have seen that happen at social functions I've seen it happen on mass transit I've seen it happen at airports what are men not seeing is their peripheral vision okay because they're not seeing that like there is a a figure a human shaped person walking towards them and they need to move this is same with at airports and stuff and they never know the they're carrying I'm like hey just to just so you know your bag isn't a ghost hey sir I'm not sure if you know this but your bag isn't a ghost it hit me so it's it's a physical tangible thing it's a part of you and I would probably like watch where you move it yeah that and then I have to say I've been on a few lunches with straight men recently where they were speaking so loudly and also their bodies were opened up to the whole restaurant and I was kind of like if you want to just do a set I'm sure you could find a stand-up show like I don't know if you're going to do a stand-up show I'm sure you could you could get a mic like if you really want one I bet we could find that for you if you want to put on a show honey there's menus all over the city totally it's like but I'm trying to eat a quinoa bowl and I want it to be private and intimate but I'm over it yeah maybe this is a difficult conversation that like girlfriends of straight men need to have and mothers I would say perhaps I would say start with the compliment I don't want to set these guys off let's start with the compliment but let's hey it's a roller coaster build them up before you tear them down exactly and I do want to shout out all of you guys for being here today and I'll see you next time bye bye all the bronies who are on the way bronies on board all the pregnant brony moms and then I read on the reddit today that someone was referring to their unborn child as fucker jones whenever the baby would do something annoying like kick her or whatever and I just love that that is I mean it's just so beautiful and we can't wait to watch these children grow up with with just love in the home I'm picturing airpods airpod maxes on the baby bump and they're listening to our Ferrero Rocher episode they're turning up and their moms are whispering to them I'll never keep a secret we don't wait Jackson what was your favorite episode me begging for compliments because the world is so scary no honestly I loved the bond episode oh fascinating I love that that feels very schooner and thank you for bringing up our parent company Amazon who has just gotten the rights from the broccoli family for James Bond you're looking at Q and a Bond girl and M they're gonna have me play they're gonna have me in old lady prosthetics to play M oh very X I love that yeah that's cool should we get into what we ride for in this big finale day what was your favorite of the season actually before we get into it because I'm curious me this is so random but I really for some reason when I was editing Kelly Rohrbach's Instagram the sensory experience of hearing us describe pictures you made me laugh you were so cute no it was so funny let us know which ones you guys like it's always your favorite my favorite I think it was Kelly Rohrbach's I was laughing I was pissing myself at you during that that was I don't know why that was there was something else that really made me laugh let me if I just see them I'll see it I'm starting a doc of jokes we can't tell you I'm starting a doc of jokes we can't tell you we can't talk about until season six and we'll bleep this but you know what I thought of the other day what best believe I'm still bejeweled I turn your mouth into a shitter oh we can do that now so no I ruin every song I sing with Terry and I have to it's the first thing I do like I just did so debuting relationships what's all this talk of relationships I just have to I don't know why my brain does that whistle while you work also all my life I always loved parages I don't think they're ready for parages have we talked about parages I don't think so it doesn't make sense I would do that do you get it parages do you get the joke Jackson no well there's no one does so Jackson do you get it now I still don't get it is this is am I dumb it's just literally fucking up the lyrics of something just making do bejeweled do bejeweled best believe I'm still bejeweled when I walk in the room I can turn your mouth into my own personal shitter it's so dumb this is what I have to believe I'm still be cruel speaking of sitting at a dinner I'm at I'm at Eleni Oysters and Benny's pointing his mouth and saying, I can turn your mouth into a shitter. I'm just bored. Hey, babe, if you want to do a set, we'll find you a stage. Literally, you go, fuck it. Eleni, you go, what's it? What's down the block? Virgil. The Virgil's right down the street, babe. Yeah, that's one. 16 parages and then aquamarine. And then I change this to aquapoutine. Some of these girls listening are going to latch onto these and ruin their friend's days. Ruin their relationships, I would say. Relationships. Recently, though, Terry, he's working with a new musician and we were listening to the song. And I. I immediately did one and he was like, just give me a week with it first. And I respected that. He was like, let me come up with the vision and then we'll get into that. Yeah. Then we can get into you. Absolutely. Just demolishing. Bastardizing. Bastardizing. I would call it a bastardization. Bastardization of fabulous pop music. Okay. Okay. Should we get into. Oh, you want to say something? Well, no, I'm just. Yeah. Today for the last ride of season two, I'll be riding for the OC. And I will be riding for a little. left-wing populist movement called Occupy Wall Street. Let's get into it. Uh-oh. Smells like cow shed and heritage. Oh, it's stanky. What the fuck? Rent, mortgages, it doesn't matter which one you're paying. It stings every month. But Bilt can make it feel a little better. Whether you're renting or paying a mortgage, one of your biggest monthly expenses should be working harder for you. That's where Bilt comes in. Bilt is the membership for where you live that rewards you with points on every housing payment wherever you live. Let me explain. Bilt started out rewarding members on their rent. Now, as of 2026, Bilt members can also earn points on mortgage payments wherever they live. Every housing payment earns you points you can use toward flights with top travel partners like United and Hyatt, Lyft rides, Amazon.com purchases, and so much more. What am I spending my Bilt points on? Well, I'm taking my husband out to dinner because he deserves it. He deserves date night. And we love going out in our neighborhood and shopping local using our Bilt points that he gets on his mortgage and I get on my rent. But here's what I think is the most underrated part. Bilt members also get access to a neighborhood concierge. It can make restaurant reservations, book fitness classes, and find new local spots, all while being rewarded at more than 45,000 merchant partners. It's like having a personal assistant baked into where you live. It's simple. Being a renter and now owning a home is better with Bilt. J-O-I-N-B-I-L-T dot com slash ride. Wait, where are we going? Who cares? Ride! So I have been taking notes while watching the OC. I have a few things I want to talk about. I'm just going to read these off and if anything sparks, let me know, Jackson. You can stop me at any time. Okay, just let me, give me one beat after each thing and I'll say if I want to, if I want to amplify or add to. Perfect. We're just firm and we move on. You do the SOS. Armband. Amplify. Okay, so. So Ryan Atwood, for those who haven't seen the OC, it's about this boy from Chino who grew up on the wrong side of the tracks and his brother gets him in trouble at the beginning. He's in trouble with the law and this lawyer comes who takes him into his house and they adopt him. This lawyer and his very rich wife who live in Newport Beach in the OC. They have a son, Seth, and he becomes fast friends with Ryan Atwood. Next door is this family friend, Marissa Cooper, the hottest girl in town, who's Luke's girlfriend. And her best friend is Summer, who Seth is in love with. And I think that's kind of it. It's just like the life and times of these four hotties in high school in the OC in Orange County. So Ryan has an armband that he wears throughout the entirety of the show. It's leather. I would say if I had to shout out a brand, I think Fossil comes to mind. Well, would you call it an armband or a bracelet? So this is kind of a big question. It's kind of giving Helen of Troy in a way. He also is a choker. I don't want to breeze past that he is a jewelry guy. So I know that best believe he's still becrueled. So here's the thing. He is a jewelry guy. He also always has like quite possibly the biggest watch you've ever seen on his other arm. So he's a man of balance, certainly. But this armband, it's leather. It's it is a part of, I think, every episode that I've seen up to now. I'm on Connell's chain. Ryan Atwood's quote unquote armband walked. So Connell's chain and normal people could run and his choker is choker. Yeah, it's choker. It's really tight. I would say he also wears these tanks like he's always in a white tank and he's pumped with a short sleeve button down over it. Well, of course. And he also kind of like sometimes has like bangs and a bowl cut and kind of like chic way. But he meant the world to me as a kid. And rewatching the show now, I get why I just I love this absolute stud next. Or do you want to amplify more? No, I love that. I love where we got with that one. Luke's dad being gay. Can I say something to you? Yes. Mustang dealership. I think it's Mustangs. It felt like Mustangs. His dad being gay. He calls Adam Brody's character Seth a queer the whole time in a way that's just like it's this is all Luke says for the first like four episodes. Well, he's a water polo player. Well, of course, Luke's dad being gay. Just I was just watching it and it took my breath away. I don't think I really registered that as a kid. I definitely watched it too young, very much giving youngest sibling and that I was watching this at like way too young of an age to really like sit with Julie Cooper. But even at like nine, I could really see a lot of myself in Julie Cooper. So she is just I mean, Melinda Clark, amazing performance. She really plays it like it's Hamlet. But I don't. OK, one thing about Luke first. So I made a TikTok about it. 'cause I rewatched season one of "The O.C." in the pandemic. - Yeah. is such a fascinating character because the writers literally said, we are going to make Luke, whatever we need him to be in this episode, character consistency be damned. I had a whiplash. He's a bad guy, then he's a good guy, then he's beating someone up, then he's accepting his gay dad, then he's fucking Marissa's mother. You're leaving out the craziest thing he did of all. He moved to Portland, which we'll get into in a minute. You want to talk about Occupy? Let me tell you a little town called Portland, Oregon. Yeah, he moves to Portland. Portland is very, it's really present in the show. It's kind of like it's on the menu. For the West Coast kids, Portland is like the place you could go to like, you know, be who you really are. And I think that's cool. Yeah. Would you want to keep going on Luke's dad being gay? I think we nailed it. I feel good about it. No, that's, it was, it was boundary pushing and I think it was important. He accepts his dad. It was important for that to happen. It immediately broke up the whole family. Well, yeah, but I just thought it was cool. Two dudes in suits hooking up at an auto dealership and your son in the end is like, you know what, dad? Like, I'm going to love you and let's move to Portland. Marissa putting her hair behind her ears. I don't know exactly what I meant by this, but you know what I mean by this. We can continue. 100%. Summer is bimbo rights. Oh my God. Okay. Goes to Brown. Summer, very similar to Aaron Paul's character in Breaking Bad. Summer was not supposed to be in the show for the whole season, let alone the whole show. It wasn't until midway through season one that she's even in the iconic, if we're talking about iconic theme song, but she's not in the opening in the beginning. Tate Donovan has a card and she doesn't. It's kind of, she had to work her way up. Same with the guy who plays Luke. He has one. Oh, also my friends and I did an OC parody. I think I talked about this on Obsess, but I'm not sure. We did an OC parody called the FC because we're from Fairfield County and we still have the tapes. It's two, about 10 minute episodes and I obviously play Marissa Cooper, but we changed the theme song. We've been on the run looking for some bagels driving down I-95. Fairfield County, here we come. So I just want to shout out to all my girls who were in that with me. I was able to costume an entire cast of people with just the clothes that I had at my house. Every character. Well, that's very over compensating. Including Dr. Roberts, by the way. Stop. Jake played Dr. Roberts. He played Johnny. He played a bunch of people. Fairfield County. Here we go. Here we go. It's pretty good. Summer is Bimbo Rights, though. I just think she's an incredible character and that's called being a star. You show up and they're like, damn, we tried to make you one note. Sorry, you're complex. You contain multitudes. Not possible. We'll see you in season two. I can't stress enough how many fucking episodes they have per season. It's like 25. It's unbelievable. It's very Gossip Girl. The fact that Josh Schwartz did both of these is insane to me. Also, I know Summer would have fucked with Ride the Pod. Oh, she would have fucking loved it. And Marissa would have been like, what are you listening to? What even is that? What is this? Misha Barton, if you're listening, sweetheart, I love you so much. Generational talent. Dear God. And she has I watch her storylines and I'm like, this is really hard. Like these are her acting. I'm like, this is a really complicated character. They don't give Marissa one good fucking day on Earth. And I'm not going to talk about it because, you know, when I get to season three, I'm not even watching the episode. To be clear. Out of respect. Out of respect for everyone involved. The show ends at graduation. Goodbye. Thank you. I don't know if this is on your list, but I don't want to talk about Oliver Trost. He's not. And I think I knew that you wouldn't. But can I just say what an unbelievable storyline. I was watching that on a Delta flight just buried in my phone. And the fact that I looked up at the end and I met a Peroni flight attendant, my darling love. He was such a doll. And it was just really disorienting to go from living with Oliver Trost for the past three hours on the flight to having to say, like, thank you. You know, I'm so glad we landed. The New Year's Eve where Marissa's wearing a cutout black dress with a poof and a ponytail. And when Ryan comes in right at the stroke of midnight, nothing can compare to when they're old and sad and love for me. Nothing can compare to when you fuck me nice and sweet. See, I can take anything and do that. And just make it filth. Wait, what were you going to say? No, that was it. You're so Marissa. Her Lacoste polos. I didn't write that in here. Oh, the Lacoste polos, the juicy zip-ups, the skirts. I mean, it's all there. Chanel tote. Oh, and when she became the face of Keds, how many pairs of Keds do you think I had? Oh, I can't even imagine. I know you had the slip-on ones, too. I sure did, babe. Backless. Julie Cooper's streaks, Kirsten Cohen and Julie Cooper, their hair streaks is very Kelly Clarkson breakaway, I think. Is that what I'm thinking of? But the streakage in the hair, and there is a five-episode stretch in season one where Kirsten, she has a different hairstyle and a different cut in every single scene and every take. And I just think it's, like, fucking sick. And I think she was trying to find it, and she does find it. Also, Kelly Rowland fabulous actress. Kelly Rowland? No, it's just Kelly Rowland is her name, I believe. I was thinking of Kelly Rowland from Destiny's Child. What's the name of, oh, Peter Gallagher. He is fucking fabulous. He's so good. As Sandy Cohen. He's just, like, one of those guys. Seth being a loser is so 2003. This man couldn't be cuter. It's so Hilary Duff and the guy from Smallville going to that high school in Cheaper by the Dozen. And they can't find a fucking friend. I'm like, I'll be your friend. You can both cum on my ass. He likes graphic novels. I mean, he's just adorkable. Seth is a very ribbit girl in this show. He ribbits for about the first ten episodes, I'd say. Oh, and you know what? When Summer dresses up as Wonder Woman, she should have been that. She should have been DC's Wonder Woman. She does look like Wonder Woman. I forgot that she did that. There's a lot of choose-between-us vibes. They really make you think that that's a thing. Yeah, especially in high school. I'm like. So, I actually have a separate note that says, Kiki streaks. Her hair changes in every episode. It's a continuity nightmare. That really is my love letter to editors, and I'm sorry you had to deal with that. This goes out to all my heads of the hair department. Bought a service with the right money! Kiki respect! Here's the thing. So, Julie Cooper-Nickel, this woman bodies that role like you can. Melinda Clark, you are a hero to us all. She has so many fabulous fucking line reads in this. Her and Marissa fight in every single scene. She would do anything for her family. No, I know. That's my thing. I think she's like. She is a true feminist, first off. But I think she is fighta. She is so taika. She is sleep your way to the top. She is the mother to Willa Holland and Shailene Woodley, who both play the role of Caitlyn. And for Willa Holland to then enter the Gossip Girl cinematic universe as Agnes, it's just like. Josh Schwartz. You don't know what that meant to me. A lot of the decisions that were made in these shows, they don't know what it meant to me. I think they do now. I hope they do. I hope they're listening. Wait, didn't McG work on the OC or no? Am I thinking of Speed? So funny you say this. Executive produced by McG. And I said, you gonna jump if McG made it. I think it's one of my favorite pilots of all time. Whoever you want me to be, as the first line Ryan says to Marissa, it's very when you and I met. It's just one of those shows. It gets soapy. It's drama. It's quirky. It's funny. It's candy. It's so funny. The scripts are so funny. It's so hardcore, though, at times, in a way that you're just like. Guns are certainly in the show. If you've seen Gossip Girl, if you're ready to just hunker down for a long spring, do it with the OC. And do I love the ending? No, but I think these shows, my heart goes out to writers who are writing a thousand episodes. I mean, 25 a season, it's like people being like, oh, it kind of has a lull in the middle. I'm like, what else could they do? An alien abduction would be all I could pitch at that table. They did everything. I literally don't even know. But I will say someone in that room hated Marissa. They hated Misha Burton. They were like, she's gonna have the worst experience of her life again today, I guess. And then Olivia Wilde and her pencil-thin eyebrows popped up on my screen, and I went, holy fuck. And I forgot about her and Marissa, which I feel like is handled in a very like, it's sexualized, like lesbians. I would say there's fuckatry involved, but I feel like there's a part of it that I hadn't seen that kind of queerness on screen, and it certainly wasn't in. Bi-visibility. Yeah, it wasn't in Gossip Girl at all. I just remember, like, Serena's brother being gay and suicidal. That was all we got out of that. Well, that's the only way. Well, of course. And thank you. Seeing myself reflected in media. The bi-visibility, I mean, what was the music venue called? Oh, The Bait Shop. The Bait Shop was just huge. The Bait Shop. Whoever is the booker for The Bait Shop, let's give them a raise. They need a raise. A raise immediately. Death Cab for Booty? Also, I mean, Spoon. The soundtrack in and of itself. The Killers perform at The Bait Shop, and my thing is that, like, there's all this drama going on. Like, I know that they had to build The Bait Shop on a soundstage, but it was so funny, because, like, none of them are listening to the concert. They're all, like, backstabbing each other, and, like, there's fraud and arson, and, like, all kinds of things going on, and it's like the killers are performing. Look, you can criticize some of the storylines you can criticize some of the seasons whatever you want to do that's between you and god but for me it's just like it was a golden age of television experience and to be watching it week to week i mean i hated when they would take breaks oh i know holidays but you remember being at school and you knew a new episode was coming and you're like ah i know the oliver trask storyline is going to find its way oh i will say one thing about him he revolutionized a blazer at high school and seth has good style also this was when dvr was sort of new on the scene and i wasn't allowed to watch tv on weekdays so i dvr was huge for me because i needed to still be up to speed on everything but i couldn't always watch that day but it was good to just know that a new episode was coming out and it was going to be an hour and it was just going to be like my little escape for the week god it's just it's making me feel so good i finished overcompensating i do this every time i finish something i need something like this like after the ride tour we did all of gossip girl yeah and then after this i'm like to decompress i just yeah and i just like i don't have to think about what i'm watching every night it's just like boom we're watching the oc and i have never once skipped the intro song every time it pops up i'm like after the cold open i'm like fuck like run that shit back i love it i just want to say chanel prom dress but oh my god to me she wears a lot of chanel she has a ton of chanel i would say also ultimate that would have been her drink of choice also misha barton is always in flats because she's so much taller than the cast which i love model behavior model behavior girl it is so you counted if you know what i'm talking about oh please misha barton she walks so grace could run in a lot of ways and i definitely mean the world to me i felt i felt my influence of that show in the cliffhangers we do because like that i love writing cliffhangers and i think the oc taught me that that's like that's how you end an episode you can't no you have to you got to give them a little spicy they got a they got to click next so yeah i oc i love you and can i say something else to you the oc mix volume one you're going to barnes and noble you're getting the cd and you're playing it you're playing it start to finish a couple songs are a little too alt for you but you make it through them and it's just fabulous this episode is brought to you by no cd relationships are intense they make us care deeply feel vulnerable maybe even freak out a little sometimes that's human but some people have relationship concerns that go far beyond standard ones like finding another person attractive and then immediately thinking oh my god does this really mean i don't love my partner or needing constant reassurance that your relationship is right or that you're not making the wrong choice because you never feel sure enough or asking yourself the same questions hundreds of times a day do i really love them what if i'm wasting their time and searching for some feeling of certainty that never comes many people think these sorts of thoughts and anxieties are just overthinking or commitment issues but they can actually be signs of relationship ocd so many people think ocd is just about cleaning or organizing but that stereotype couldn't be more wrong real ocd is a serious condition where distressing unwanted thoughts called intrusive thoughts get stuck on repeat and you feel compelled to do certain things to try to make the anxiety stop with relationship ocd compulsions might look like constantly seeking reassurance replaying memories to see if you feel a spark or comparing your partner to others but what's given all of us so much hope is learning that ocd is one of the most treatable mental health conditions when you get the right kind of specialized therapy ocd needs erp therapy exposure and response prevention which has proven to be the most effective treatment regular talk therapy isn't recommended and can actually make ocd worse that's why we wanted to tell you about no cd no cd is the world's leading ocd treatment provider and all of their licensed therapists specialize in erp you all know benny drama's favorite program for dealing with intrusive things he swears by this program i can't speak for him or i guess technically i can because we're married i can't testify against him in court though but he really loves no cd and i happen to know for a fact i mean i sat in on some of his sessions like the provider didn't know i was there but i was just there to make sure that you know everything was above board and you know what it was to learn more about starting ocd therapy with no cd go to me about embezzling which would then be huge for us in the early 2000s when the great recession happened the bubble burst yeah as marissa said to her mom and dad yeah as marissa said to her mom and dad yeah as marissa said to her mom and dad my dad's a thief and my mom's a whore well exactly yeah and for a lot of people that was the case when the big short happened oh my god so to me right now on the screen you're margot robbie in the bathtub with the champagne describing what describing what all this wall street yeah describing occupy it's just occupy to me okay it's just occupy it's the occupy movement so i was a republican when the occupy movement happened so to me these are just like a bunch of hippies who didn't want to go to work it's like you do it on purpose get your notes out tell me about occupy okay so first of all it only happened for 59 days i literally remember it being seven years wait you're lying it was longer than the iraq war it was 59 days from september 17th to november 15th 2011 i could i just don't think that's true look i'm seeing it in my research in my head it was three years exactly and maybe that's just a testament to the impact of it but basically it was the left-wing populist movement against economic inequality corporate greed big finance and the influence of money in politics and it began in zuccotti park in new york city's financial district so what i didn't realize because i did know that they were like protesting the bailouts that bush passed where they like helped banks you know get back on their feet even though they wouldn't help like americans and they were like protesting the who had their life savings stolen from them by like Bernie Madoff. So there was a big ruling in 2010, it was the Citizens United versus the FEC. And the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that corporations can give as much money as they want to political candidates. I'm picturing like all the people listening to this pod drinking like refreshers hearing you talk about Occupy Wall Street. We are the revolution. We just need to, well, it's because it's called balance. Yeah, of course. One day I'm going to bring you Kelly Warbach's Instagram and one day I'm going to bring you Occupy Wall Street. And one day you'll see that those are connected. These protests gave rise to the wider Occupy movement in the United States and other Western countries. So I do believe that their slogan was we are the 99%. And I just think that this was so taika. It was so fita. They brought tents. They camped out there for like weeks. And I mean, I guess like 57 days or whatever. But I just think it's so cool that they were taking it to the streets. And that's I don't know what they actually accomplished. And I refuse to look it up. But I just think it's the only way to cause change is to like cause a ruckus. And even though some media outlets might paint you as like a whatever hippie and you're lazy. Just imagine being at those protests like you can just look back and be like, fuck, yeah, I did that. It's the first time America was giving French. Do you know what I mean? I literally it's the first time we acted French and we've never done it since. But boy. Did I love it. I have like such a I think what's a perfect experience with Occupy Wall Street personally. My cousin lived in Portland. I can only guess on the same street as Luke's dad. Luke's dad. And Jackson laughed at that. You little schooner. And we were there for her wedding. And it was during the, I guess, the week of Occupy Wall Street. But it was during Occupy Portland. I can't stress enough that I, were there any other occupants of Portland? Everywhere was closed. Like hotels weren't running. The entire workforce was shut down. We couldn't go anywhere. My parents were like, obviously, we agree with this, of course. But we are just kind of like, the whole city is not running. There's this park in the middle. There wasn't one freaking blade of grass that wasn't occupied. That wasn't being sat upon. It was so iconic to me. And I just think about it. And I'm like, I had the perfect front row seat of Occupy Wall Street. And I was like, I think I was. 16? Were we like, we were in high school, I think, when. No, we were 10. Really? During Occupy Wall Street? Yeah. What year? It was 2011. Whoa. Oh, wait, fuck. No, I'm sorry. I was 20. What am I saying? Hey, you don't have to lie about your age. They know our ages. As sad as it is. And they know I'm 5'1 on IMDb. I never said I was smart. Don't put numbers in front of me. I remember having a football game and then seeing Occupy Wall Street in Portland. And if that doesn't show you. Yeah, I was 12. That's the range. I think Portland was excited about it because they were certainly keeping Portland weird. And I was happy to be part of it as well. I love this. I think it feels like community. It feels like really sticking it to the man in a huge way. And yeah, I wish we had some of that fight right now. Can I tell you what it is to me? It's I want to make art and I want to make trouble. We are the 99% originated like that variation originated from a Tumblr page. I'm seeing you at the Met Gala with that bedazzled on your chest. We are the 99%. But you're at the Met Gala. And I'm at the Met Gala. And it's odd. It's odd to cheer. Of course. Basically, we are the 99% was, quote unquote, arguably the most successful slogan since hell no, we won't go of the Vietnam War era. Now, I will be doing a Taylor's version of Ken Burns's Vietnam War documentary. But that's down the line. I was about to say, this is very you coded. Don't even get my girl started on Vietnam War. You say Ken Burns around my girl. She's ready to go. I will light it up. Yeah, they had amazing versions. Branding. I remember the signs. Also, like everyone on the left is an artist. So, you know, we had murals galore. Like, hell, yeah, my girls were turning it out. So, yeah, I mean, it was definitely art. It was make trouble. Cruella coded. It was very spray paint your face. And it says the future in stencils on it. And you know what? It's kind of giving to me is Gotham City. Well, let me tell you, Portland felt like it as it so often does. Yeah, we need more fire. We need more energy. And I do, of course, want to say before people come for me, there was a crime issue in the encampment. I'm not going to get into it too much. I don't know if it was perpetuated by the protesters or by people who would come and like sort of antagonize the protesters. But I do want to say that I saw that in my research. So I don't want that to go, you know, unsaid and people get mad at me. It's not a perfect movement. I don't think there's ever been a perfect movement, maybe except for Ride season two. I'd say so. And it is a movement. It's not a podcast. If you hadn't brought up, this is how we do. Would have been a perfect season. I brought that up. Yeah, that was you. You made me. You made me do that. I didn't do that. This is our land. You were definitely the 1% that one day on set. I was occupied in that moment. But when you watch the live photo, I am the 99%. Exactly. And that's important to note. So I just think it's been, wow, such a fabulous season of Ride. I can't wait to come back May 28th. And there's a surprise. Email your questions about overcompensating to this is Ride 1 at Gmail. Who knows what we'll do with them? I mean, we have no idea. You know what you are, Benny? Hmm. I f*** it. Your word's not mine. Babe, you're my ride or die. Ride or die. Of course, I ride for the OC. I couldn't ride harder for this. And I feel like it was formative for me. And just to have female characters who are complex and written well and just wearing couture. And killed. And ultimately die. It's just like. That's so f***ed up. Like McG Giveth and McG Tate. You take it the way. Do not. Don't make me laugh and love you even more. Endure media. Clip that. Clip that. Here's my thing. Occupy. I'm going to ride till I die for Occupy. It was Viva La Revolucion. It was. It was Viva La Vida. It was Portland. It was Luke's dad. It was everything. And you know what? If my family had to eat continental breakfast at the hotel and it wasn't that good, like that's fine because we were fighting for something bigger. And I think that's the first time I really saw that. So that was really good for a young little football player to see. And it definitely influenced the fight to NS, my love. Occupy, we see you and we stand with you. And I'm sorry for my feelings towards you in the past. Well, of course. Little did I know there was a Republican girl out there who was going to see me more than I had even seen myself. And she was she was nearly ready to leave it all behind. Well, of course, she just needed. It's the Joker. The push push. I just needed to take one more philosophy class at Boston College. And. Then I was out the door. So speaking of the Joker, I as we end season two, who is the immovable force? What is it again? When and when a movable. Hold on. When and when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object. What is it? OK, it's when an immovable object meets an unstoppable force. So what's the question? Which one is which of us? Oh, you are a movable object. I think. You're an immovable object and you're an unstoppable force. And what happens when they meet? They they start a podcast. They start a podcast, my love. We revolutionize television. Well, of course, we are so excited for you to see Overcompensating. We are so excited to be back. We're going to be back sooner than we were after season one. Trust. And we're just so freaking excited this season. Thank you for bearing with us and Mary Beth's detainment and us shooting a television series. We swear it'll be worth it. They're letting me out to hit the campaign trail. They're letting me out for press because I told them, as I as I said last week, we're going to the swing states. And so they they're perfectly happy to do that. But they did say I will be coming back. So, of course, it's not I'm not free carte blanche, whatever. It's like it's temporary. But I'm excited to between now and when we come back for season three. And of course, we have a little surprise. The show will be out. You can see it and watch it and like tell us how how you feel about it and how all eight episodes and over 227 territories globally. It's the only number I've ever. Memorized prime video, watch it, stream it, watch it with your best friends. And let's just say if you're having a watch party in L.A., you should maybe like DM me the address. Who knows what we'll do with that? We DP all these houses. We throw beer bottles at garage doors. We send drones. We send a pack of drones to them. Just to see what they're up to. We call the cops on everybody. We bring the lesbian cop from Ride Live. Oh, my God. She should drive us around. Wait, if we really do go to people's places, we will cut this. Oh, my God. Believe that. We will. And can I just say to your media? One, two, three. Clip that. Best believe I'm still a crew. Oh, my exit. Benny, babe. Eyes on the road. Benny, look out! Ride. Ride. Ride.
