In this episode of the Unapologetic Designer Podcast, the host explains how one strategic Instagram reel in February 2026 booked her design business for over three months, despite her posting only two to three times weekly. She argues that designers often mistake visibility problems for messaging problems; viral reach without a compelling message rarely generates inquiries. The successful post worked because it spoke specifically to her dream client’s pain point—creating graphics that don’t convert—rather than offering generic tips. By naming the problem and shifting the audience’s perspective, the content made viewers feel seen and trust her expertise. She also emphasizes the importance of asking for the sale, such as inviting viewers to DM her, and showing her face to build familiarity. The host contrasts this with typical designer content that showcases portfolios but fails to create urgency or self-recognition. She advises focusing on one to three highly intentional posts per week, using everyday observations as customer insights to craft original, relatable content. Finally, she promotes her “Generate Demand” workshop and encourages listeners to act on the strategies, warning that consistency without strong messaging is just noise. The goal is to create content that makes ideal clients realize their problem and choose the designer as the solution.
In February of 2026, I made one single post that booked out my design business for over three months. And in this episode, I'm going to break down why it worked so well, how you can implement the same strategies in your content, and why posting less with more intention is better than showing up five days a week. Welcome to the Unapologetic Designer Podcast where we chat controversial design topics and expose the raw truth about life as a designer. Like I said at the beginning, in February of 2026, I made one single real that booked out my design business for over three months. And it completely changed the way I think about content because a lot of designers think the answer is to post more, more consistency, more volume, more proof, more graphics, but this post proved the opposite. At this time that I made this particular Instagram reel, I was probably showing up anywhere between two to three times a week. Like I wasn't even posting that often. I will say I do keep my stories updated almost daily Monday through Friday, but actual post on my feed, I don't show up five days a week. Like that's just super unsustainable in my opinion. And so when I do go to create a post, I am really intentional about it. And this post proved that it's not about posting more. It's about posting something that actually lands with your dream clients. That makes them say yes. And when I say this post worked, it did end up getting around 80,000 views, which is a lot. Do not get me wrong. That is a lot of views. It was a lot of shares, a lot of saves, a lot of engagement. But I have had post reach 500,000 views, millions of views and never, ever get inquiries from them. And so although this post got a lot of views, it produced incredible results that I've never seen before, even when I reached way more people. Because the views were not the thing that looked me out. Although yeah, it helps that I got in front of more people. That's not the thing that got me booked out. The message in the content was the thing that got me booked out. It was a post that said the right thing to the right people at the right time. And this is where a lot of designers get stuck. They think their content problem is actually a visibility problem. Oh, I need more followers. I need a viral video. I need more people to see my business. I need to reach more people. And although reaching more people is great, it does put you in front of more potential clients. I have students literally hitting 10k months with less than a thousand followers. I have students booking $22,000 projects with maybe 2000 followers. They have no viral content. And so a lot of the times it's not a visibility problem. It is a messaging problem because you can be seen by hundreds of thousands of people and still not receive an inquiry because your content doesn't make them think, oh my gosh, yes, this is exactly what I need and I need it right now. And that is what my post did. It didn't just show my work. It shifted the way someone saw their own problem. And when your content can do that, it becomes so much more than a post. It becomes a sales conversation happening before they ever even get into your inbox. I'm now going to insert the audio from this video because you don't actually even need to see the video to understand the message that I'm conveying in this piece of content. And then we're going to go into the specifics of everything I touched on that made it convert so well. Just because you know how to make a camera graphic doesn't mean you know how to make it sell. A lot of business owners are stepping into the designer role by using camphor or AI to throw something together and call it content for the day. But posting content does not automatically mean selling. The hard part isn't making the post, it's knowing how to position the message, guide the eye in the right order, use hierarchy, contrast and spacing and actually lead someone to take action. Most DIY graphics are skipping all of that, which means you're just busy posting things that aren't actually moving the needle. If your content isn't converting right now and you know something's off, DM me and we'll set up a 30 minute brand audit called a pinpoint what's not working. All right, that was the post. Let's break it down. So first and foremost, I said something very specific. It wasn't broad, it wasn't generic, it wasn't, here's why branding matters. Right? We've all heard that before. We've seen it a thousand times. Boring. Okay. I said something so specific that my dream client felt exposed in the best way possible because I called them out for the fact that they keep creating graphics that don't actually do anything in their business and they know it. Keep down they know it because it's not generating the results they won't. I named the actual thing they're experiencing. The thing that they are actively doing day in and day out with their business. And this is the type of stuff we teach in design business academy all the time. Clients do not buy because you explain your design services. They buy because you are articulated their problem better than they ever could and they self identified with your content. That is what makes someone trust you. That is what makes someone be like, oh, I actually have a huge problem and they're right. I am wasting time and doing all of these things and to not producing the result I want and I actually do need help. It's not just about your portfolio, it's not about your aesthetic, it's not just about your work, it's your ability to say, I see what's actually happening here. I know how to fix it. That is what makes you the expert. The second thing this post did was that in doing that and calling these people out for a specific action, I also shifted their perspective at the same time. The post made people think differently about their brand. And when you're able to shift how somebody thinks you also influence how they buy. This is the part that's missing in most designers' content. Many creatives try to convince people that they're talented by showing their work or showing their process. But content that converts doesn't just say, look what I can do. It says, here's what you haven't been seeing clearly about what you're doing and the problems you're having in your business. And that's a really big difference. And so when someone has a perspective shift, they start to reevaluate their current situation and start thinking, wait. Maybe this is the reason that I'm not getting the cells I want. Maybe this is the reason my social media isn't growing the way I want it to. Maybe this is the reason I can't fix this problem that I feel like I consistently have. And once they're able to see the problem differently, they start looking for a different solution. And that is where you come in as the designer with your services. This is why perspective shifting educational content can be so powerful when it is then right. Not boring generic three reasons you need a brand strategy. Blair, we don't want to hear it. We've seen it 80,000 times. Nobody wants to read that. But when you're able to call out your audience on the way they're behaving in their business and the result that's coming from their behavior, it starts to shift their perspective. And it makes them see the gap in what they're doing and they become open to the solution. And that's where you slide in. But I also want to heavily highlight the fact that at the end of this video, I said DM me. I asked for the sale. And this is what so many designers are not doing enough. They think that their audience is just going to come to the conclusion themselves that they need to reach out to fix the problem. No, you got to tell them, other workers, okay, you got to tell them DM me, let's hop on call and pinpoint what's not working for you. You got to make them comfortable and to add another layer on to this in the video at the end where I'm inviting people to DM me, I am showing myself. I am showing my face. I am getting them familiar and comfortable with the person that is speaking to them beyond just hearing my voice. So I definitely think that helped as well. And the final point that I want to make with why this post performed incredible for me is the fact that all of these things I've been talking about created self-recognition. People were able to read what I was saying and think, wait, that's me, I'm doing that. And I didn't do it in a way that talks down to them. And this is hard to do. It's hard to convey something like this without being negative. But I was able to say, hey, here's what you're doing. But it's probably not producing the result that you want because of x, y and z. And here is why a design
can fix that problem. Oh, and hey, I'm the designer that can fix that problem for you. And I walk them down that journey without offending them. A lot of designers are out here posting work, but they're not saying anything that makes somebody feel seen. They're showing logos, they're showing mockups, they're showing the color palette, the brand process, they're showing their services, they're showing off the brand reveal, and nothing's wrong with putting that content out there. But those visuals alone do not create urgency. They create admiration, but admiration does not create action. Someone can love your work and still not inquire. Someone can save your post and still not buy. Someone can think you're incredibly talented and still not understand why they need you right now. You could be far more talented than another designer out there, but if the other designer knows how to convey ROI and create urgency in their content, that client is probably going to choose that other designer over you, just because they were able to convey a problem the client is experiencing that you were not able to do in your content. And this is why whatever you're posting needs to do way more than just showcase your work. It needs to do way more than just share fun facts. It needs to create self-recognition and make your idle client say, "That's exactly what's happening in my business." I didn't even know how to explain that. I need somebody like this who understands what I'm going through. When your content can do those things, that's when it is doing its job. I would rather you post one intentional piece of content a week that makes your dream client feel deeply understood than post 10 pieces of content that just take up space and make noise on the internet. And some of you right now are hiding behind consistency. You're posting often, but you're not saying anything strong enough to move people to inquire with you. You're showing up, but you're not leading your audience to book with you because you're not asking for the sell. You're creating content, but you're not actually creating demand, because those things are not the same. And this is actually what we're going to dive deeper into inside our generate demand workshop happening in social butterfly club or marketing membership. Again, we have bonus workshops that go along with this entire series that are going to help you implement these strategies. If you are tired of showing up and people just liking your post, saving your post, but nobody actually inquiring, I want to help you make content that's going to move them to book you today, because you should be able to realistically make one to three pieces of content a week that's highly converting and have inquiries without feeling like you have to post five days a week. If you posted after the last episode or if you're about to post, here's what I want you to do differently. I want you to stop asking, what should I post today? And I want you to start asking, what does my idoclient need to realize before they're ready to invest in my services? That question will help you change everything about your content. And here's the next exercise that I have for you. Think about a situation from today, literally anything. Maybe it's why you picked your coffee this morning. Maybe it's walking through a grocery store. Maybe it's a client interaction that annoyed you. Maybe it's a website you clicked out of because you couldn't find what you were looking for. Maybe it's a brand you instantly trusted without even knowing why. Now ask yourself what part of that connects back to branding, design, customer experience, trust positioning, or buying behavior. Because everything you do in the way you behave is a customer insight. What makes you choose something to us? Something ignores something. Get frustrated with something. Click away from something. That is the same psychology your clients are operating from. And using this type of exercise, you can realize what your clients are doing in their business that's not working and how to start making content that helps them self identify that problem and go to you for the solution. This type of stuff is what makes your content feel original. This is what can give you a point of view. And this is what helps you stop sounding like every other designer online. Even think about the content that you save or that you stop and watch or that you stop and read. And ask yourself why did I read that? Why did I save that? I mean there are posts that have not a lot of likes or engagement that I read all the way through. And then I save it. And then I ask myself why did I like that post so much? Why did it hook me? How did it make me self identify? And how can I create posts in a similar format that are targeted towards my dream clients? Again, you don't need a lot of followers of viral piece of content or an unsustainable amount of posts to get clients in your inbox. You just have to be able to say the right thing at the right time and point them to the solution. In our generate demand workshop happening in our marketing membership, we are going to help you actively start creating momentum for your business before you even leave the call. Like I said, every single one of these workshops, you are taking action on the call. You're not leaving with drafts, you're not leaving with ideas, you're leaving with shit going out and getting visible. And I would love for us to collectively start a hashtag where we can all go support each other and see what we're all creating. So use hashtag hot designer summer if you want your post to appear under this series. I think it will be really cool and inspiring for all of us to start posting with that hashtag and then be able to go and look at how other designers from this community are creating their content, are conveying these types of messages and showing up using the strategies I'm sharing here. You already know I'm all about community over competition. There is more than enough clients to go around and support all of us. And listening to this does not build momentum action does. And I want to see you taking the action. In the next episode, I am breaking down what actually makes clients say yes right now in this day and age where AI and artificial intelligence and fake design is taking over everything. If you want to attend the generate demand workshop, go click the link below and join our marketing membership. I'll see you there. Podcast Summary
Key Points:
A single Instagram reel in February 2026 booked the speaker’s design business for over three months, proving that posting less with more intention outperforms frequent, low-quality content.
The post’s success came from specific, targeted messaging that called out the dream client’s exact problem—creating DIY graphics that don’t sell—rather than generic branding advice.
The content shifted the audience’s perspective on their own problem, making them self-identify and see the speaker as the expert solution.
The speaker explicitly asked for engagement at the end (“DM me”), showing that asking for the sale is critical, and she also appeared on camera to build trust.
Many designers focus on visibility (followers, views) when the real issue is messaging; content must create self-recognition and urgency, not just admiration.
The speaker recommends posting one to three intentional pieces weekly, using daily observations as customer insights, and joining the “hot designer summer” hashtag for community support.

FAQs
The key factor was a single Instagram reel that delivered a specific, perspective-shifting message to her dream clients, not the number of views it received.
Posting less with intention allows you to create content that truly resonates and makes dream clients self-identify with the problem, leading to inquiries, rather than just posting frequently without a strong message.
A visibility problem is about reaching more people, while a messaging problem is about saying the right thing to the right people. You can have high visibility but still get no inquiries if your content doesn't make clients see their own problem clearly.
By calling out a specific behavior or problem the client is experiencing and articulating it better than they could, which makes them reevaluate their situation and become open to your solution.
Asking for the sale, such as inviting viewers to DM you, is crucial because it guides clients to take action, rather than assuming they will come to the conclusion themselves.
Designers should focus on creating self-recognition in their content, making clients feel understood and see the gap in their current approach, which creates urgency and leads to inquiries.
