Speaker 4Huntington Bank. Less than a week from now. Syracuse plays UConn again, but this time it's in basketball for an exhibition game. Here's what we want to see.
Speaker 5You are locked on Syracuse. Your daily podcast on the Syracuse Orange. Part of the Locked On Podcast Network. Your team, every day.
Speaker 4Hi, everyone. Jackson Holzer, Locked On Syracuse, on today's show. We are less than a week away from Syracuse basketball being back in action. It's not for the regular season. That's not until early November. But Syracuse next Tuesday night plays UConn. Yes, UConn again, ladies and gentlemen, in an exhibition contest. So on today's show, we are going to go over what we want to see in that game from Syracuse. We are going to begin the show by discussing Amari. Amari Monroe first, and the fact that he is eligible to play for Syracuse basketball. All that and more coming up here on today's edition of Locked On Syracuse. And before we get to everything, today's episode is brought to you by Kalshi. For a limited time, download Kalshi and use code LOCKEDON to get $25 when you trade $25. Kalshi, trade what's next. So we got a positive update in the eligibility saga of Quinnipiac Transfer Forward. Amari Monroe, if you recall, back in early August, Jerry McNamara surprised the Syracuse world. And he made a pretty significant addition by getting Amari Monroe, the 6'7", forward from Quinnipiac. But as has been the case ever since they got Amari Monroe, we have not really quite been sure whether or not he is going to be able to play for Syracuse. He is a part of the many 5-for-5 lawsuits going on across the nation. Yes, we are. Once again, talking about that here on Locked On Syracuse. But I promise you, this is a positive update with Amari Monroe. So on Tuesday, Monroe was granted a preliminary injunction from New York State Supreme Court Justice Jean Marie Westlake. And what this does, it allows Amari Monroe to play for Syracuse for the time being. Now, at the time of this recording, it is not yet official, but it is expected. That the NCAA is going to appeal the injunction to a higher court. Now, what does that mean in layman's terms? It means that Amari Monroe, for now, can play for Syracuse basketball. But at some point in time during the year, it is possible that he will once again be ruled ineligible to play for the Orange. So this is something that you're going to have to bookmark for the entirety of the basketball season. Until we get to that. Until we get a final conclusion with Amari Monroe. It's the same deal with Justice Ross Simmons and Syracuse football. Right now, he's eligible to play. So he has been playing for the Orange, obviously. But there could come a point during the football season where Justice Ross Simmons can no longer play for the Orange. It's the same thing with Amari Monroe. And I'll tell you this, with Amari Monroe, we will cross that bridge if and when we get there. If he is no longer allowed to play for Syracuse basketball. But at least for the Orange. At least for now, he has been granted the preliminary injunction. Therefore, he is eligible to play for Syracuse for the time being. And I expect that next Tuesday night against UConn, we are going to see Amari Monroe suit up for the Orange. Again, that is my expectation. We don't know that to be official. We don't know exactly what Sherry McNamara is going to do as far as his rotation standpoint during that exhibition game. Now, let's move on to actually talking about. What to expect next Tuesday night, Syracuse exhibition contest against UConn. What do we want to see in that matchup? Okay, we all want to see Syracuse win the game. Okay, we all get that. But what do we really want to see from Syracuse against UConn? Well, number one, in my opinion, is the starting lineup. Now, I know that kind of sounds obvious. Of course, you want to see the starting lineup. In action, it's not about seeing the starting lineup in action. It's about who is actually in the starting lineup. Because this is the first time in a few years where the starting rotation doesn't seem set just yet for the Orange. We may have a decent idea of what it could be, but we don't know for sure. The last couple of years, yes, I know it was a different regime, but we knew what the starting lineup was going to look like. In this case. I think everyone has different thoughts about what they think it's going to be. John Rothstein has his thoughts. I have my thoughts. You probably have your thoughts. Feel free to drop your starting lineup prediction in the comments section below right now. This is not necessarily a good thing or a bad thing. Okay, this is not meant to be a positive or a negative. Like, who's in the starting lineup? Is that a bad thing that we don't fully know? Because we knew in 2025, and we knew in 2026, and we know how those seasons turned out for Syracuse. There's a little bit of a. There's a little bit of uncertainty with this starting rotation. Mainly, who are the starting wings going to be? That's the question mark. I think we know who the starting point guard is. It's Garway DeWall. Seems like he's healthy and ready to go for this season. Luke Wilson is in all likelihood going to be the starting center. And Sadiq White, in all likelihood, is going to be the starting power forward. It's who is going to start on the wing for Syracuse. For Syracuse basketball this season. I think that one of the starters is going to be Temple Transfer, Aiden Tobiasen. He should be one of the leading scorers for the Orange this season. So that's one guy that maybe you can pencil in. But you can't put him in pen. You can put him in pencil. Can't put him in pen. And then the other wing spot, it comes down to a few players. Omari Monroe, we led the show with him. It's certainly possible that he's in the starting lineup. He's a really talented player coming over from Quinnipiac. Why not? You have Sienna transfer, Gavin Doty. We saw Gavin Doty last year at Sienna with Jerry McNamara. He had himself a damn good year. Maybe he's going to find himself in the starting lineup day one for Syracuse basketball. Or better yet, why not returning sophomore, Kyan Anthony? He could also be in the starting lineup at the wing spot. In fact, that is what CBS Sports' John Rothstein is projecting. He thinks that Kyan Anthony is going to be in the starting lineup. And I believe we talked about it on. A show last week or the week before. So we'll see if Kyan Anthony ends up being in the starting lineup for Syracuse basketball this season. But the point remains, the number one thing that we want to see here on Locked on Syracuse in the Syracuse-UConn exhibition game is, what is Jerry McNamara's starting lineup? Is he truly going to reveal what the starting lineup actually is? Is he going to throw a curveball in there and start someone that nobody is expecting at all? That. Maybe isn't even going to be the case when the regular season rolls around? Is he going to try to throw people off guard? Or is he actually going to start the five that are going to be suiting up? Or not suiting up, but going to be starting when the real games roll around in early November? So with that said, what do you think the starting lineup is going to be for Syracuse? Who do you think are the two main wing players for this team? Comment your thoughts right now in the comments section below. I think John Rothstein is pretty spot-on. That's my personal take. I think that if he says that Kyan Anthony is going to be in the starting lineup, or at least he predicts that, well, he's got really good information as to why he's making that prediction. So I think it's going to end up being Kyan Anthony and Aiden Tobias on the wings, but it could be different. So comment your thoughts right now in the comment section below. Now, when we come back here on Locked on Syracuse, we will continue going over things that we want to see from the Orange in their exhibition contest against UConn. And it's this next one. We're going to talk about here. It's something that they didn't really show in one of their exhibition contests last year that I hope with a new regime, it's different this time around. I'll explain more next on Locked on Syracuse. College football is full of games you plan for all year, but sometimes the best memories come from the games that you almost missed. season rolling around so guess what ladies and gentlemen you're going to want to keep it locked right here on locked on syracuse hit that like button hit that subscribe button help us reach our next goal which is 7 000 subscribers all right now back to the content portion of this episode ladies and gentlemen what do we want to see from syracuse basketball in their exhibition game next tuesday night against the yukon hosties we led with hey we want to see what the starting lineup is we're going to see what the starting lineup is we're going to see what the starting lineup is going to look like since we don't really know what it's going to be this season the next thing that we want to see from syracuse specifically is maximum effort sounds simple sounds like i shouldn't even really be talking about it isn't that a baseline expectation for any team that we watch whether it's syracuse or another team of your choosing that you love maybe you're a big bills fan a jets fan giants fan whatever it is you're a big hockey fan hockey season just started or you're a big knicks fan congratulations on the nba title don't you want to see your team play with maximum effort now why do i bring this up with syracuse basketball specifically yeah i understand it's an exhibition game it does not count towards the standings you can lose and it won't matter you can win and it also won't matter it's an exhibition contest for a reason but what exhibition games can do is help set the tone for a season in either a positive way or a negative way because exhibition games are where you can build habits for the season good habits bad habits think of it like practice practice how you play right in practice you should be giving your all because in the game you're going to be giving your all same deal in exhibition games now i know what you might be thinking right now jackson you're kind of overselling this you're kind of overreacting a little bit what do you mean this is just an exhibition game blah blah blah blah you know you're putting too much on a syracuse yukon exhibition i understand why you may feel that way i truly understand it however and i want to preface this by saying i understand that most of the players are different there's only i believe two rotation players and i think that's a good thing i think that's a good thing i think that's a good thing players returning from last year's roster that's tying anthony and sadiq white unless you want to count noah lubdell and calvin russell as well but two main rotation players back and an entirely new coaching staff and regime i understand that most things are different from last season however the reason why i'm bringing up maximum effort in the first place is because of what we witnessed last year syracuse had an exhibition contest at home it was against pace and it looked like syracuse didn't care that's how it looked now maybe they did care and they just simply played poorly in the exhibition contest sure it was evident that they were not a good team last season we understand that i'm just saying how it looked and last year it looked like the syracuse players did not want to be there it looked like the pace players wanted to play a real basketball game and the syracuse players were just out there because well they were obligated to be there they had to it was an exhibition game on the schedule let's just get it over with and i remember in the post-game show after that game it was a mini post-game show because that's what we do for exhibition games we only do mini shows and i was really upset i was angry i was angry because this was a team that did not deserve the benefit of the doubt and yet they're out there against pace in an exhibition given a lackadaisical effort that's what it was it wasn't that they were missing it was a lackadaisical effort that they were showcasing to all of us and my whole point was like i said earlier it's about building habits in these exhibition games it's not necessarily about winning it's not necessarily about losing it's about building quality habits for when the real games roll around and i'm not saying that syracuse stunk last year because in an exhibition contest against pace they did not display the same quality as they did last year they did not display maximum effort or at least they did not appear to display maximum effort but there were many times over over the course of last season where it looked like maybe syracuse was just mailing it in that they had simply given up and that they were done and that they knew where this season was heading maybe that could be traced back to the fact that in the exhibition games specifically that one against pace they didn't really care they were just out there just because given a lackadaisical effort so even though these are exhibition games and that ultimately yeah what i like to see syracuse win we would all love to see syracuse beat uconn in an exhibition contest sure it does not mean anything if they win it does not mean anything if they lose what we want to see is this team play with some heart play with some grit that every player that enters the game we want to see them display maximum effort that's what we want showcase that you want to be on the court we understand it's exhibition we understand it does not matter but at the end of the day even in exhibition games it's good practice build good habits because pretty soon the regular season is going to roll around and whether you have good habits or bad habits based on your exhibition contest doesn't matter early november is going to happen and the real games are going to start and you're going to have to figure it out and you might as well build positive habits in your exhibition game and that starts with this one against uconn so i understand that it sounds so simple self-explanatory why are we even talking about syracuse showing max effort it's because you can build quality habits and i want to see this team play with some heart and some grit even though it's not going to be a yeah the game technically does not count and by the way i have full faith that they are going to do that i have full faith that this team will go out there led by jerry mcnamara and they're going to give it everything they have maybe not final four intensity but they're going to give it everything they have they're going to treat this in my opinion like a real basketball game even if it's exhibition they're going to treat it like a real game at least for the players that actually get on the court which i think is going to be most players what do you want to see from syracuse in this exhibition contest against uconn comment in the comment section below when we come back here on locked on syracuse there's one more thing that we really want to see from syracuse in this matchup against uconn and it's something along the lines of a lot of players seeing the floor wait did i just spoil it maybe but we'll talk about it next on locked on syracuse college football is here and the predictions keep on rolling who's going to make the college football playoff who's going to win their page and that was in early august when jerry mcnamara said you know what i want to add to this roster and he landed amari monroe monroe was on board jerry mcnamara was on board the team was on board they want to improve they want to make the ncaa tournament this season and let's hope that this move ends up working out for syracuse basketball let's hope that amari monroe stays eligible for your business try for free today at odoo.com locked on that's odoo.com locked on locked on syracuse i'm jackson holzer final thing that we want to see from syracuse in its exhibition contest against yukon next tuesday night everyone on the court that's right ladies and gentlemen every player in syracuse's rotation for the most part should enter this game against yukon every single player to clarify that and no jackson holzer locked on syracuse final thing that we want to see from syracuse basketball in its exhibition showdown against yukon next tuesday night and that is everyone on the court we want to see pretty much everyone in syracuse's rotation everyone on syracuse's roster to be on the court at some point against yukon now before i continue with this point like who do we want to see why do we want to see them i want to clarify something earlier we talked about how syracuse needs to display maximum effort so i know what you might potentially be thinking right now which is you want syracuse to show max effort to really play hard but yet you want to see everyone in the rotation play so to clarify what i mean here's what i mean i mean every player for syracuse that enters the game against yukon next tuesday i want to see them play with maximum effort does that sound good does that make sense is that a good idea i want to see everyone in the rotation play maximum effort is that reasonable this is where we draw the line between playing this like it's a regular season or ncaa tournament game first playing it like an exhibition game i want every single player for syracuse to display maximum effort but i want pretty much every single player to also get an opportunity to play because it's an exhibition game and there are no repercussions for losing and you don't get a bouquet of flowers for winning nothing really matters as far as the outcome of the game i just want to see max effort from every player that's involved also i don't know exactly what dan hurley is going to do with his rotation dan hurley of course the head coach of yukon i'm i'm sure what he's going to do but i'd imagine he's not just going to play seven guys against syracuse in an exhibition game i'd imagine that he's probably going to play most of his roster in this game because it's an exhibition game and like i said you don't get a bouquet of flowers if you win you don't have any repercussions if you lose the outcome of the game does not matter so that's where you draw the line everyone display maximum effort but also everyone gets a chance to play so now who do we actually want to see on the court besides you know the main guys that we all expect to get significant playing time this season well how about point guard ryan mesh the true freshman i have been saying for a while here on the show i don't know if he's going to be quite ready for a significant impact this season i'm not sure if he's ready to even be a backup point guard for this team but when john rothstein was watching syracuse you know a few weeks ago he had high praise for ryan mesh so maybe we can see some ryan mesh in this exhibition game against yukon how about the center adraman cb he also got high praise from john rothstein he's really developing his game it might take him a little bit of time but he's really developing for syracuse basketball could be a guy you really keep an eye on down the road but i absolutely want to see him in this matchup against yukon and there's more i want to see freshman guard ethan butler i don't think he's going to have much of a role this season but why not this is an exhibition contest against yukon why not see him on the court see what he's got because there are no repercussions if you lose eager martinez another center probably not going to play a whole lot this season but why not let's see it and we'll see you next week on the court in this game i don't know if calvin russell was going to be in attendance for this one but if he's in attendance why not play a little bit of calvin russell of course pending the approval of fran brown for syracuse football but hey maybe calvin russell or maybe even noel abdel the point is that everyone should be able to enter this game this is an exhibition contest where the outcome truly does not matter in the whole grand scheme of things and so this could be really valuable for syracuse rotation players especially the ones that are not going to be playing much this season because when else are they going to get an opportunity to face a team like yukon when syracuse plays duke this season i can promise you that ethan butler is probably not going to play that ryan may not play in that game that eager martinez may not play in that game but in an exhibition against yukon why not why not see what they have because you never know maybe someone can surprise you in an exhibition game and all of a sudden jerry mcmahon has to rethink his rotation so everyone should get the opportunity to play however everyone that does play needs to show maximum effort that's where we draw the line comment your thoughts right now in the comment section below what you want to see from syracuse basketball and its exhibition game against yukon next tuesday night all right ladies and gentlemen our next episode of locked on syracuse we are going to be back on friday no episode thursday
