Welcome to BrewSurst field on the campus of Utah Tech University for tonight's baseball match-up between regional throws and future conference foes as the trailblazers take on UNLV from Las Vegas for the fourth and final time this year. Hi everyone, I'm Spencer Rodack here on 91-3 radio blaze. First broadcast in a while, last time Lucas and I were with you was Monday of last week as the trailblazers took down BYU and completed a perfect 4-0 road trip to northern Utah this week. The trailblazers start the week off with the hustle and rebels tonight and then have a three game series against Tarleton State and the two teams are tied percentage-wise for first place in the conference. So a big series coming up this weekend Friday through Sunday, but first this midweek fixture. And so far this year, teams have played three times. This is number four. UNLV has taken two of three. The trailblazers did, however, back towards the end of March, played two games in Las Vegas and lost game one, 11-1. Then rebounded to take game two by the same score. They're first ever win against the hustle and rebels in program history. And tonight on the hill for Utah Tech, it is Ryan Martinez, the senior right-hander who sports a 605-ERA, a 5-1 win loss record and his 14th appearance in just his second start of the year. 19-3 innings pitch for Ryan. 23 hits allowed, 15 runs, 13 of those earns, 7 walks, 14 strikeouts, 2.95 batting average against. We're about to get underway here. UNLV is ready. So leading off for the rebels will be the centerfielder, the senior Reggie Busy, followed by the second baseman, number six, Marcos Rosales. And at least batting third, shortstop number five drew Barrigan. It will be Busy who leads off and will get the Utah Tech defensive lineup here in just a moment. As Martinez, Reddy is the first pitch. Now Busy into the box. And the first pitch taken for a strike. Martinez led the trailblazers and starts last year, a different role this season out of the pen. And second pitch is low for a ball. Just start number two on the year for Martinez. Utah Tech in this midweek fixture. And a pitch called strike. Number one two count as Busy has yet to swing at a pitch. Utah Tech and UNLV in this midweek fixture. Trailblazers with that big conference series. So not the same lineup you normally see. The swing and a miss from Busy for strike three. One batter down and one strikeout. For Martinez on the hill. Now the second baseman, the junior Marcos Rosales. Trailblazers as I mentioned, have a big three game series against Tarleton State. Here at Brewstersfield coming up this weekend. And Martinez, the first pitch is high. Fastball to Rosales for ball one. Utah Tech over the weekend. Two of three at California Baptist. And it looked like the batter tried to call timeout on that pitch. And he had his bat down and the umpire said, I don't think so. And the pitch was fired in for his strike from Martinez. So it's a one one count to even things up. And a low pitch and a swing and a miss. But it looks like the bat caught Andrew Pyle. And quickly while Pyle is gathering himself. Did not look like it felt good. And why would it? So Utah Tech defensively from first to third. It is Cooper Smith tonight getting the start of first base. McDaniel at second. PD Soto junior at short. And Ryan Craypole at third. Manning the hot corner. In the outfield from right to left. Ryan Martinez getting the rare start to junior in right field. And then center is man wearing. And in left Finnegan Stewart behind the plate is Andrew Pyle. Most of the catcher starts at least since conference play have started have gone to Ty Johnson. But Pyle with the start tonight in a non conference affair. Ty Johnson will be daching for the trailblazers today, however. And the one to pitch just high outside to two count. Do even it up to the UNLV second basement. Two to pitch. And swung on, fouled back. We'll do the two to again. Trailblazers trying to get back on track. They were shut out on Sunday in the series finale at CBU. And only had two hits in the game. Six nothing loss. And that pitch is golfed low and lifted into right field in a base hit. And stumbling with the baseball as Martinez, not a normal starter. And because of that, Rosales will get to second. Got trouble picking up the baseball twice. We will see if there's an error on that play. And there will be at least the one. So a hit for Rosales, regardless. And then an error on Martinez because he had trouble picking up the baseball and throwing it back into the infield. So not the best start for Martinez out and right. Getting a rare start today. First pitch called a strike to the shortstop Drew Barrigan. Barrigan, a 391 average, the best on the team. Martinez wants a new baseball. So they'll toss that aside. Martinez did play a little bit in the weekend series at CBU. The Trailblazers come into this one. 28 and 16 overall. That pitch is popped high and out of play down the first base foul line for strike two. And quickly in and out two hole is Rosales. Or Barrigan, excuse me, Rosales is standing on second. Martinez, they look back two second. And now the pitch, the O2 delivery. And it's sent to left center. Does it have enough? It does. It's off the scoreboard for a two run shot. Drew Barrigan delivers a two run horror. And the hustle and rubble is having early lead. So UNLV trying to take this series outright in the fourth game between these two teams. Future conference foes in the Mountain West next year. One, the last game here in St. George, eight to six. And then took or split the games in Las Vegas. Now that it's not the start we wanted, your Utah tech. Started with a strike out of bussy. Had Barrigan in an O2 hold it. Barrigan crushed that pitch off the scoreboard. And so it's to nothing UNLV. First pitch to the catcher Garcia strike, waist high. And the next pitch is low from ball to even the count. Catcher Garcia, about a 3-23 on the year. Solid number four, catcher. Off speed is low for ball two. So Martinez, after getting a strike out to start things out. And getting the short stop there again in an O2 hold. Instead gave up a two run homer on the next pitch. And now he trails this game after a good start. At least through the first batter. Is that pitch valid away to even the count of two two? The two two from Martinez. Pot foul out of play behind the netting. So another two two coming. As I mentioned, Martinez last year was the leader and starts for Utah tech shifted to the bullpen this year. It does have a five and one win loss record. He still has an ERA over six. And that pitch is lifted into right center field. And it will be. The center fielder Hudson Man wearing taking care of it. At the wall for out number two. So some loud contact off the bat. For the catcher Garcia. And now the designated hitter Cooper chef. Softmore, batting 308. And the first pitch is a shock ground or crippled charges. Throws over to first. and the ball is in and out of the glove of Cooper Smith. And so, safe at first is the D.H. Chef, and that will be an error as Crayple's throw took Smith off the bag. At least put an error up on the scoreboard. We will see if they charge it to Crayple on the throw. It was off-line and into the base path, but also it did get into the glove of Cooper Smith and he couldn't hang on to it. So, either way, Chef on first via the error. And now the left fielder Jack Sammon takes the first pitch for a strike. So two errors and a two run homer so far, allowed by Utah Tech. Not the start, the Trailblazers wanted as they tried to split this four game series. And get back on track after losing Sunday's Series finale at Cal Baptist. UNLV on the other hand, they had a conference series with Nevada Reno and dropped two of three as well. That pitch low, one-one count. Utah Tech 13 and 6 at home, they're 6 and 3 in the whack. They're tied for first percentage-wise. The state with a sweep over the weekend is now eight and four in conference play. They have played one more series, so the way the math works out, percentage-wise it's a two-way tie at home. The standings. One-one is popped high, down the left field line and out of play. One-two count now with two outs. The UNLV left fielder salmon. Martinez trying to get out of this inning. It will likely be a bullpen game. It will push Martinez as far as they can go. I'm sure they want to win this baseball game. Throw over the first, back safely, his chef. Not as important though as this weekend's series when you consider that is against co-first place, Tarleton State. Utah Tech wants to stay in front of the Texans after the weekend. They'll have to win the series. A sweep would be fantastic, but you would take a two out of three and still have a one-game lead at the top of the league's damage. Throw down a second and they get chef who is trying to steal a great throw by Andrew Pyle. And chef is out on the base pads caught stealing so that ends the top of the first. As salmon was still up to bat. We'll head to the bottom of the first. The trailblazers up to bat for the first time after giving up a two run homer in the top of the frame. Utah Tech with their first half bats of the game. It will be second baseman Kyle McDaniel leading things off in his normal spot. Then the center fielder number 15 Hudson Man wearing batting third. Third baseman number 22 Ryan Crepel. For UNLV on the mound. L.J. Manning is 14th appearance. First start of the year. The R.A. of 10 in 18 innings pitched. About 17 hits. 20 runs all of them earned. Nine walks 32 strikeouts and a 246 batting average against. Defensively for the hustle and rebels. From left to right it is salmon. Busy and hurdle. And from first to third Garrett Tonto Rosales, Barringin and Myro. Garcia behind the plate. Of course Manning on the bump. So Utah Tech in an early two-nothing hole if you're just joining us. Two run home run in the top half of the first. By UNLV shortstop Drew Barric. That's where we stand as Utah Tech taking their first plate appearances. And it is Kyle McDaniel lead off. And he swings at the first pitch and dumps it in the right field for a base hits. So coming out aggressively. Trying to get those runs back. Are the trailblazers at the plate. Now Hudson Man wearing to the plate. Man wearing it. It's gotten his batting average up. He struggled to start the year at a really good year at Saltley Community College last year. He's always been good defensively, but earlier this year struggled at the plate. But he's brought that average up to 268. And look over for Manning and the first pitch delivered for a strike waste tie. And Man wearing fouls that pitch back. For strike one or strike two would be even the count. What am I saying? Strike two, oh two count. Apologies. Got a dial in here in the first inning. Manning looks over in first and there goes McDaniel. And the throw is a ball in the dirt and the catcher Garcia can't handle it. And so Kyle McDaniel gets a stolen base. So a runner in scoring position and I was going to say I wouldn't be surprised if we saw Hudson Man wearing lay down a sacrifice bun. Since Utah Tech is one of the top teams in the nation at sack buns. Instead McDaniel takes a freebie to second base. So really no need for a sacrifice bun. And now of course there's two strikes anyway. Now pitch. Here's shins for strike or ball one. Soon as Man wearing obviously got that second strike. That took the bun out of play. And so McDaniel decided to get in the scoring position on his own. And that pitch another one low, same spot below the knees. And so that means we have a full count. First payoff pitch of the evening coming from Manning. The payoff pitch. Man wearing swings at it. It's trouble in right field and it's dropped. And it will be a double for Hudson Man wearing. And Man wearing is quick. So we rounded the bases. Hit into the exact right spot. The gap in shallow right. And hurdle was on his horse trying to get to that baseball. He even got glove on it but couldn't hang on. But because of that potential catch. That meant McDaniel left second late so he stands on third. So still two runners in scoring position with no outs. For Ryan Crayple. First pitch inside and high for ball one. Crayple coming off a solid week in those four games. The three at Cal Baptist and the one game on Monday at BYU. Six for 10 at the plate. You say, well, how did he only get 10 at bats in four games? Well, it's because he walked seven times. And he's on base 13 out of 17. And that pitch is a wild pitch and it's high out of the glove of the catcher. And in walks McDaniel to score one is the ball one back to the backstop. And now it's two to one and Hudson Man wearing advances to third. You will take it anyway. You can get it if you're Utah tech. So now two one score line. Manning still yet to record it out. Crayple takes that pitch at the knees just below the knees. but it's called a strike either way. Umpires tonight, Chad Veter. The home blade umpire, Jeff Kluft over its second and Dax up to the third. And a chop grounder, it's over the head of the first baseman, got the high bounce and an RBI single in a shallow right for Ryan Crayple. We've got a tie ball game, 2-2, here in the bottom of the first. Took just one of those awkward high bounces off the infield dirt over the outstretched arm of Nikki Garatano over at first. It was enough to sneak out of the infield and have the DH tie, Johnson. Johnson batting 350 on the year. Really solid option. Generally, first position is a catcher is the first pitch is low in the dirt from all one. But he does DH relatively frequently. And D.H.ing today is, if it was a conference game, he would more than likely be behind the plate. They still want his bat in the lineup tonight. Throw over to first to keep Crayple close. Garatano dropped it but soft throw so the ball didn't get away from him. Still the one out of the Johnson. Pitch his way upstairs for ball one. Ball two. That pitch not close very similar to the wild pitch that allowed. McDaniel to score the first run for the trailblazers. Manning looks over to first. Johnson swinging a miss for strike one. I think he was trying to send that over the fence. Two one count, hot foul. Behind the plate. Even the count at two two. It's Crayple over at first after a strong week last week. The on base. Highs keep rolling for Crayple. There he goes. Toss over to first and now he's in a bit of a pickle. And the throw to the shortstop who was covering the second base bag is into the outfield. And Ryan Crayple not only had a stolen base. They'll slide into third. It really did look like he was going to be thrown out. And it was the shortstop bearing and who was covering the bag. The throw was well wide toward the left side of the infield. So the wrong side of the bag trying to get Crayple. If the throw would have been on target, they would have had Crayple by a mile. They caught him leaning off first. And Ty Johnson rung up strike three looking. And that's the first out. So I'll have to look at the live stats. I would assume they credit. We will see actually. I will check that in just a moment. If Crayple was credited with a stolen base, although I think it would probably just be a straight-up error. Based on the throw. So now Brian Martinez in that first pitch bounces in front of home plate and away it goes. And it actually hit Martinez on the top of the foot. And Crayple thought he was going to walk in with a run as the pitch went all the way to the backstop after bouncing in front of home plate. But instead home plate umpire chat Veter says that clip Martinez. So Crayple has to stay at third. That would have been to go ahead run. Either way Crayple on third Martinez on first, just the one out. Or the left fielder Finnegan Stewart. 316 hitter this season. Martinez thought about going and then Finnegan Stewart founds off the first pitch out of play down the left side. [Crayple screaming] Stewart had a big series against Utah Valley. Tied a program record in game three with a pair of triples. It sends that pitch the other way found on the right side of the infield. But it is quickly 0-2 on Finnegan Stewart. Martinez will go on the pitch and now trouble the throw home and safe now out. Is Ryan Crayple. They threw down to second to try and get Martinez. And the throw was wide and a bouncer and so they threw home. After they realized they wouldn't get Martinez. They did get Crayple at home. It's like a close play. Unfortunately we don't have a replay review. And I don't even have access to replay at all. We have to go with what the umpire says. Look back to second now with Martinez standing on second. And a grounder. That didn't make it out of the infield on the left side. Barringin picked it up and realized he had no chance to get Finnegan Stewart over at first. So he threw it to third but Martinez was already standing there. So an infield base hit for Finnegan Stewart. So the first baseman Cooper Smith with two outs and runners on the corners. Smith at 246 average on the year. That's 15 RBIs. That was a chance to put Utah tech in front here in the bottom of the first. Manning looks over to first and the first pitch is low and outside. We're ball one. Two Smith. So we've seen some chaotic plays from both of these teams. Errors hit by pitch. Wild pitch. Throw home as the batter was out and now Cooper Smith takes one off the body for another hit by pitch. This is something we saw the last time in Las Vegas in game two of the series than the trailblazers won 11 to 1. There were a lot of hit by pitches in that game. By UNLV. That game was back on March 22nd. Four hit by pitches in that game. Against Utah tech. 15 total walks in that game by the UNLV pitching staff which led to a trailblazer run a little victory. That pitch is swung on and missed. For strike one to the catcher Andrew Pyle in the eighth spot. Bases are loaded. The pile not known for his back in the catcher hole. Certainly there are more or defense. Chopper to first that's taken care of. For out number three. By Nikki Garotano. So the trailblazers get two runs across the time of ball game. But they leave a few on base three runners left on base. Crepe will also thrown out at home. So the two run in and could have been more. But we head to the second. Here for Martinez, Tame Fox and on the mountain. He's a junior from Venice Beach, California. And the pitch is in their waist high and fastball for a strike. Throwed a lot of fastballs in this at bat. Full count, pay off pitch coming. Fox's pitch is low and inside for ball four. And the lead off, but not a lead off, but a walk for McDaniel at the top of the order. Now Hudson Manward. He had a double, he's one for one today and he came round the score, the tying run. He looks to deliver here with McDaniel on first. First pitch to man wearing his low for ball one. Fox and with a unique delivery takes the baseball. There's a couple digs into the dirt with his shoe. Kind of bounces a little bit on his front leg. And then pitches quickly once he gets to that point. Throw over to first and McDaniel back in safely. Now to 1-0. 1-1 count is that pitch has taken fastball waist high for a strike. Both of these teams looking to get back into the win column today before big conference series this weekend. I'll throw over to first, trying to keep McDaniel close to you back in safely again. Another throw over to first, did he get it and it was close. First base, some buyers says McDaniel back in safely, but that was a close call over at first. Now a new baseball for the pitcher Fox. Certainly doing his due diligence on McDaniel who thought about taking off. Got a little bit down the bag and decided not to go and then man wearing swung through a high fastball for a strike. So now 1-2 count. Another throw over to first, McDaniel. Back in safely again, that one not as close as the third throw over, but that's four tosses over to first to try and keep McDaniel on the back. To be fair, he did still second in the last inning. So I understand why there he goes and the pitch is high and no throw from the catcher Garcia and another stolen base. This one standing up for McDaniel. Now the count is even at 2-2. So now this becomes an RBI opportunity for Hudson Man wearing 2-2 pitch swung on and lifted in the right center field. And making the play, getting under it to make the catch his bussy center fielder for out number 2. That does advance McDaniel to third. But with 2 outs, it's now up to Ryan Craypole. Try and bring in and go ahead run. He tied the game in the bottom of the first with an RBI single. First pitch is high and here are the letters for ball 1. Daniel 90 feet away, taking a lead off third. And I change up. Just missed the top of the zone and it's a 2-0 count. 2 Craypole. Foxen's pitch is lifted, foul out of play. That is strike 1 on Craypole. It's really only that unique delivery that Foxen has when it's a fastball and he does his thing and then quickly throws the baseball. There was a fastball and it's sent to center field for a base hit for Ryan Craypole and an RBI. So back to back RBI base hits for Craypole. And Utah Tech pulls in front 3-2 as McDaniel crosses home plate with run number 3. Now the D.H. tie Johnson, he's 0 for 1. Struck out looking in the first. So looking for some redemption here. Throw over the first try to keep Craypole close now. He's back in safely. A lot of throws over. And that one is sent into center field to chop grounder into the hole behind second base. Neither of the second base when the other shortstop for UNLV could get to that baseball and ends up in center field. So now runners on first and second and the line is moving with 2 outs. And now it's Brian Martinez. And the hit by a pitch in his first half bat. Doesn't have a lot of at bats this year. Takes the first pitch for strike on the changeup. Martinez, this is just his 14th game played and third start. He only has 12 at bats. The last one technically won't count as an at bat. That pitch weighs time and other out of speed. Strike two quickly. A 0-2 hole for the right fielder of Utah and tech with two runners on base and two outs. Just an 0-83 batting average coming into today. And that's a weak chop grounder to second. So Martinez will walk back to the batter's box. Still the 0-2 count with two outs. And two runners in scoring position. Big chance for Martinez here. Utah tech is taking the lead and now trying to add to it. Ball outside and low in the dirt. Martinez on the year just with the two RBIs. So he could double his total with a hit to the right part, right part of the ballpark. But it's down 1-2 in the count. And a chopper and it's in the left field and it gets past both the third baseman and the shortstop. And it will score both runs. So Utah tech now leads it five to two on an RBIs single into left. From Brian Martinez. And now the mound visit. And no, that is it. Wow. UNLV head coach Stan Stolte. He came marching out and quickly took that baseball from Foxen. He does not look happy out there on the mound. A waiting a third pitcher of the ballgame is we're still in the second inning. And it is fitting and steward up to bad next. Now the 1-1, swung on, ground over to third, throw across the diamond. Gareth Tano over at first for round number two. So a couple of relievers here for both teams having quick innings thus far. It's 39 RBIs as well, which leads the team. I don't think you see that too often. Or your nine hole hitter leads your team and runs driven in. They like him in that bottom spot as the double leadoff hitter from McDaniel at the top of the order. And we will see if we get to the top of the order on the 0-1 count as the timeout was called. Hey coach, Chris Feinhower talking over this at bat with the Utah Tech shortstop. Now it looks like Garcia behind the plate needs to tie his shoe. So this is taking just a moment of everyone's time. PD was ready to get back into the banners box. I'm not sure why Garcia didn't do that during the at bat timeout. Maybe it's a delay tactic. A little bit of gamesmanship perhaps. 0-1 pitch. And it's swung on and a chopper to the shortstop and he couldn't handle it. So PD-So Junior is on the first base back in an error. His charge to Barrigan at short. Really a routine play should have been handled by Barrigan. He just bopped the baseball with PD-So Junior Speed Good Luck. Back to the top of the order now for Kyle McDaniel. One for one. With a base hit. He's also scored a pair of runs as a parrho still on basis. And he walked in his last played appearance. First pitch to McDaniel. Called a strike. Lou Rick looks over to first. The Canturgarcia is you have to swing a bat in this at bat but he's down O2 in the counter early. And swung on a miss for strike three. So great start to the relief appearance for Brock Brownie no matter how long it ends up being that's a solid start. Now the D.H. Cooper chef. Soft more Richard sophomore from Las Vegas. And that pitch is called strike so Brock Brownie dialed in painting the right part of the zone and UNLV hitters are just not swinging the bat. Oh one another one. Down the middle for a strike. Clearly UNLV hitters in the inning so far. It's not liking the pitches they're seeing in terms of a chance to hit them. And now the O2. And it's popped down the right field line and into foul ground out of play into the Utah Tech bullpen. The Redshire freshman last year chef picked up three mountain West freshman of the week. Usually can give you an ining or two out of the pen. We're only in the fourth inning and this is our sixth pitcher total three for each team. So one on a miss for strike three on a half-hearted swing. From chef and back to back strike outs to start his appearance on the evening for Brock Roundy on the hill. And now the left-fielder Jack Samet. One for one with a double. He let off the second with a double. Then got stranded there. That stranded at third. No one was able to bring him across. But Louick has done a good job for ULV in release so they haven't had to use as many pitchers as the trailblazers. W Island is the sixth Utah Tech Trailblazer pitcher.
