You know her as the multi-talented star of the Little Mermaid, the color purple, Gronish. We all fell in love with her as one half of the duo Chloe and Halley. Well now she is shining in her solo debut album release, Love or Something Like It. She is soulful, she is grounded, and I know she's the kind of housecaster. When she walks in the room, she lights it up. Nervous. Yeah. You cute that performance. The doctors were like, "World Series, we come." It is so good to have you at the house. Thank you for having me. I am so glad to have you. This is so pretty. I literally tell everyone I'm like, "If I get invited to somebody's house, that's a big deal because you don't let everybody in your house. It's your space." Hello. But this space is also your space, you know what I mean? I hope you feel just as home here as you're doing your own home. Speaking of, I figured we'd go ahead and get you a Shirley Temple. Get started. Oh my goodness. Now do you prefer your Shirley Temple with a sprite base or a ginger rail base? I always go by the sprites. Are you like a sweet? Yes. Okay. I'm sweet girl all day. I know that's right. But then let's get it on. Now I go ginger rail. Okay. Because normally I'd also be adding tequila. Now you say it's sweet, right? Yes. Give me all the sweets. Tell me when to stop. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Like that? Haha. Who's it? You going? Bam. Thank you. There you are. Wow. And I'm going to go ginger rail. I'm going to go ginger rail. I've never had it with ginger rail. You've never had it? Okay. You try it first then. Is it good? I like it. Well, it's probably not going to be sweet enough for you. I was sick because I'm not putting that much in mind. There we go. Bam. Cheers. Cheers. Wow. Perfect. I got ginger rail fears all in my nose. That's what we need. Right? How happy you immediately got. Okay, so we've got wings. Lemon pepper wings for lunch. Oh my goodness. Wow. We got the wings here. Wait, you made these? Yeah, girl. This is amazing. You can cook. Yeah. We be cooking. This looks so good. Let me get some salt and pepper on these though. We're going to have to do a little. Mmm. A little salt, little pepper. As you know, you've got to season your food. Mm-hmm. I like a lot of season. Same. Same. Season the food. Where are you from again? Born on the east coast. Born in New Jersey. Okay. Raised for most part in yourapolis. Seat, that's why. You know what I'm saying? Why you like flavor. Yeah, you got to season it up. Season it up. Okay. Now, you like flats? I do. Over wings. Only flats, yes. Only flats. I like all flats. My wings that border is lemon peppers, extra well done, all flats. I'm with you with the extra well done. Yes. Have to be extra crispy. But now, the flats just seem like a struggle for no reason. Really? Yeah, right. Yeah, because the drum, you can bite that thing and you move on. With the flats, you've got to like, you've got to throw up damn sides. Just to try to eat the food. I just feel like it's just, it's better. The drum is just a lot. It's too much on the end. I don't want all that. I kind of like taking my time. Actually, hold on. Now, I'm thinking about it. On my life that I've known you, you've been vegan. Yes. When did the chicken wings, when did the chicken wings start? Well, I had a pass because I was pregnant. Okay. And I, at that point, when I was pregnant, I was like, I'm listening to my body. What is my body craving? I'm going to give my body what it needs because I'm growing all human right now. Exactly. So I think my doctor was like, well, if you start craving something, it means that your body is like deficient in that. So I was craving a lot of chicken and like beef. It was so weird. And I hadn't had it for 13 years. What was the first thing you had? I had Chick-fil-A nuggets. And that was all I wanted. Because me and Chloe, we were in Atlanta. We used to order Chick-fil-A so much. We would eat it so much. It was so good. And then we became vegan. And that was like the only thing I missed. Like I remembered thinking about them being like, if I could only miss them. Right. Yeah. Did you ever have the burger? Did you ever go back for the. No. Even now, I tried like it in and out, but I don't like it in and out. You didn't really miss nothing though with it in and out. Really? Did I go to the wrong place to get the burger? Maybe not the best burger. Oh, it's good. Yeah. Maybe not. You know what I mean? That's where I messed up then. Should we take a picture of it? How do I take a picture of it? Yeah. Look, I'm like, make it pretty. Make it pretty. Hey. It's so cute. Thank you. Thank you. Get in there. Oh my goodness. You're so proper. I was just going to use my fingers. Listen, so was I. But you know, they be on me. They be on me. They be on me on the YouTube. Really? I can't believe you didn't put no gloves on the day of my house. Come on. That's what I said. I got these big ass tongs looking ridiculous. Here we go. Now see, I like them a little. I like the skin to be crunchy. Yes. And the meat to be soft. But not wet. You know, when it's like. Not wet. You know, you. Yeah. Exactly. You know, I realized coming here. I didn't eat all day. Where do you have rehearsal? Yes. I didn't eat there. All I had was tea because I was singing. So you were saying he's ready to eat. I'm ready. Okay, well, let's go ahead and eat then. Channel. That wing was so good. Uh-huh. I'm good to like, pretty eat now. Don't pretty eat now. Okay. Because you know what I'm saying. You know flats, you have to. Yeah, because it is. You got to do stuff. Yeah, you got to work. Mm-hmm. I love that the wind sound just went. It's so big. This is fire. Is it good? Yes. Mm-hmm. You see that? You see how easy that was? Yeah. That was easy, huh? Mm-hmm. This is just more fun. I got to get in there. Now you got to push stuff through the middle. See that? Mm-hmm. But the pieces feel like better because they're just like. All the work you had to do. I'm going through it. No, we were talking about like the ritual of food sometimes, right? So I like oysters. Mm-hmm. But I like a raw oyster. You prefer like a cooked oyster. Yes. I don't want to chew it. Really, you like the slime? I don't know if I really like oysters at all to be honest. What I like is the ritual. See? I like talking about them. I want to dress them and see the tower. See that's like me, though. This is nice. I can go through it. You got something to do. Something to do. You've got this album called Love or something like it. I don't want to dig into here in a bit. So we're going to play a little game called Love and Elite. Love and Elite. The scenario is here. You'll read them out and we'll see. If you love it, you'll hold the paddle up. Let you love it. If you leave it, you'll hold this paddle up. Okay. Okay. Pets on the bed. I kind of love it. What? I kind of do. I'm not a dog person. I'm a cat person, okay? Okay. So I have a cat Poseidon. Okay, I have hair too. So they do. But he's so sweet. And he likes to sleep on the bottom of the bed. So it's not like all in the sheets. So it doesn't feel like nasty or anything. Right. Because he's on the end just like. But like most cats, like, you know, they're inside most of the time. Yes. I could understand that a little bit. If you saw what my dogs do when they come out here. Are they big dogs? They're big dogs. Okay. And they live a big dog life. Okay. With big dog smells. We're not putting no big dogs in the bed. See, I get that. get that. You say yo. - You're all cat, though? - You might like. Plus they're really independent. You can leave them home. If you have to leave out of town, you just leave out food or get an automatic feeder and they're fine. They're very independent. - I don't know about the cat. (laughing) - Making life decisions based on your zodiac. (laughing) - No. - It's that, ah ah ah. - Are you an Aries? - I am an Aries. - Okay. - But I don't make life decisions based on being an Aries. I just like-- - What is the most Aries thing about you? - I think I'm a little blunt. I think sometimes people don't understand, well, realize that about me until they meet me. And they're like, "Oh, you have a little something to eat." I'm like, "Yeah, I guess so." - I guess so. - Now you know. - Yeah, I think people think I'm like, "Hi, I'm like, no, I'm not." (laughing) - I have known, y'all, you and your sister, you and your family, really, for over, I'm going to 10 years? - Literally, yeah. And so to see y'all grow up into the incredible artists that you are growing up into, growing into becoming, but also the incredible women that you are becoming, it is unreal. In these last couple of years, what's been the thing that has surprised you the most about the women that you're becoming? - I'm definitely finding my voice more now, being 25. Like, I think they say your frontal lobe fully develops when you're 25 or something. - Okay. - And I feel like I'm like better at making decisions now. I'm better at being stronger and using my voice for myself. I think that was something I was a little like, used to be a little more timid than I am now. So I still am a little bit, but I'm like coming out of that shell. - Yeah, or agrees. (laughing) Or the rooster is like, "Yeah, I found your voice." - Oh, calling instead of texting. - Calling instead of texting? - No, I'm sorry. Unless you're somebody else. (laughing) - I'm sorry, no. - Unless you're somebody I really love, and I'm like, really excited to hear from. - You can text me. - Is that how you feel? - I feel like if you're gonna call, text me first. - Yeah. - Like the surprise FaceTime. (laughing) And I hit you with a text back as you're still calling. I'm like, "Hey, you good?" - What is up? Why are you FaceTime? - Hope is not an emergency. - What is that feeling, FaceTime? - I know. - I think maybe it's the camera that pops up when you see yourself. - Yes. - Maybe that's what feels like. Why are they calling me right now? - What? - When you see yourself. - I agree. - AI generated videos. This is no shade, but I mean, I like AI. I think there's awesome things about it, but like music videos and things like that. - Yep. - Those things are so exciting when they're real and like. - I agree, but I'm gonna tell you this. - Yeah. - When you see a whale jump out the ocean onto the boat and knock everybody off and then look right into the camera and wink and then jump back into the ocean, I'd be like, "Aye me." - Isn't it crazy how real it seems? - Yes, let me tell you something though, it's not AI. Your voice on this album. - Thanks. - Baby, I know I see why you've been holding on to it. 'Cause you said not a world gotta be ready first. Y'all not ready all the way just yet. What was it about love or something like it? Why did that title feel like the title for the album? - I feel like I've gone through such like a transitional last four or five years of my life. - Yeah. - It's been so beautiful to be on this journey and also kind of find myself through it and relationships and your relationship with yourself and you know, I think it's really cool that question. Sometimes when you leave something, you do wonder. You're like, "Well, what's that love or is it something like it? Like, what is this, what was that feeling? Is that truly what it is? Well, I ever experienced that again. How am I ever experienced it?" And I felt like it was a really fun topic to kind of dive into. - Yeah. - 'Cause all of my songs kind of fell under that file. - You like love? Something like it. - Yeah, exactly. - So, I don't know. I just loved kind of filing my songs like that and going through the journey, finding is it or not. And then the listener can answer. - I'm with that. - Yeah. - There is the journey that the musicians are taking you on, but you automatically load that thing with your own experiences. - Yes, I mean, that's why I love listening to other people's music. I mean, I find moments where I relate. It takes me back to whatever specific moment where I was feeling this way or I had goosebumps at this concert. Like, this one, Sizzasong. Oh my gosh, nobody gets me by Sizzas. I've watched her at the Kendrick concert perform it when she was in the Fairy Wings. And I was like crying. 'Cause it was so beautiful. And I love how songs hold certain moments for you. When you hear it, you can experience that moment all over again. - All over again. I'll never forget where I was when I heard "Do It" the first time. (laughing) Immediately, I was like, (laughing) Oh my God, I just, you couldn't, I came to this day. What is up, neighbors? Okay, so I wanted to take this time to say thank you for all of your support, your likes, your comments, your shares. This has been an incredible ride with you. And I love that y'all rock with it, so tough. I also wanted to take this time to ask you to check and make sure that you are subscribed to the show. We've got over 200,000 neighbors that are a part of this thing and the energy is real. And I want you to be a part of it. Also make sure that we are able to do all that we have planned for house guests to bring it to you. So come on, be a part of that. You don't wanna miss it? Okay, now back to the episode. You've got some serious bangers on this one. Like, you've got some music that people, they're not gonna send people for a loop, I feel like. But also you've got some incredible collaborations on this album, Gorilla Ray, Mariah the Scientist. And then there's, I'm pretty sure I heard our pal, her and Chloe. - Baby, it was something about that song. I said, "Oh, I didn't realize it was 15 minutes long." Had that sucker-on-reheat? - Really? - What was it like to get back in the studio to create together you and your sister? - The funny thing is we were actually in the studio together for that song. I had, I was in the studio one like 2 a.m. night and I made like the first minute of the song, like the first in hook. And I was like, I need to hear my sister on this. Like, I need her to finish it 'cause there are certain songs that I'll start and I'm very like whenever I create something. I'm very like, if I don't like it, I'm by, I don't wanna touch it again. Like I'm just like, yeah, I just, I'm like, okay, but there's like a thousand songs I've forgotten about and they're just gone into the universe. - Where is the laptop, honey? - Sometimes I hear like this one, and I'm like, Chloe can finish this. Like I hear her voice on it and it was funny 'cause she was in Legos. - Okay. - She travels with her equipment and shit. - My sister is like a frickin mad scientist. - She is like a mad scientist. - She's literally a mad scientist genius. So I sent it to her and she's like, yeah, I'm by the pool and Legos, I'll do it right now. And like, it sends me like a thousand-- - I love that you slipped into Chloe's voice. - Like, it sends like a thousand vocal tracks of like beautiful harmonies and I'm like, I was like crying, let's think to it. - How did you and Ray connect? - I love Ray, I don't know how we connected. Like years ago, it's probably like how you and I met. You just meet when you're young and then you like somebody and they stick in your life and Ray was somebody, I think me and Chloe, we used to have sessions with her all the time and we would just be like, who is this beautiful being? She's such a light, she's so talented. I collaborated with her on three songs on this album. - Yeah, to me, it seems like a signal of like real collaboration, real understanding between-- - Yeah, real chemistry, yeah. - Yeah, Glorilla. - Yeah. - Like how did that happen? - Well-- - 'Cause I mean, when she come on the track, wow, here we go, get 'em go! - Yeah, I love her. People like make this joke on Twitter that we sort of look similar, like we're like cousins or like, she's like the evil twin version of me and I'm like, and so when I see her, we took a picture next to each other. We really do, like she looks like our fans. - She's 100%. - Yeah. - She's the birth of a spirit. - Which is gonna be birth of a spirit. - Birth of a spirit. - I love her acting. But we just connected off of that and then I DMed her the song and she was so struck by it. She loved it. It was like, yeah, she sent her births right away. And I listened to her when I work out, like all the time. - To get you through. - She's like, turn up music. - Exactly. Talk to me about a Mariah. How did that happen? - I think I sent her like three records. And that was the one that she gravitated towards the most. I was like, she really wanted to be on that one. - Right. - It was really beautiful that she chose to be a part of that one 'cause I feel we have connected over having sort of similar experiences on, I guess just personal relationships being in the public eye. - That part. - And having so much chatter around you and what, you know, people's opinions and things. - Right. - She's always been such a kind person to me and supportive. She'll always take me like, hey girl, you good? And I'll text, are you good? And that sort of thing. - Yeah. - So this song felt really appropriate. Just to talk about like what a woman goes through and what being alone feels like, and sometimes that ache of wanting to just be with somebody. And I don't know, it was a really beautiful time to make it with her and I was very happy that she was a part of it. - You have had to navigate some beautiful things publicly 'cause you've grown up in front of us, right? You've had to navigate. some of the things that many of us get to navigate in private. Yes. You've had to navigate on a very public scale. Yeah. I know how I feel. Yeah. And I know how I'd be ready to activate. Yeah. I just wonder what it feels like how you are now moving through this space with what feels like more control. I feel so much stronger and more like confident in saying what I have to say. Yeah. It's even clear on this album. Yeah. But you're you are utilizing that. Yeah. With this project, I mean, that was a lot of it was a lot of fuel that I had for this project. And I don't know. I just feel better. Like I feel clearer. I feel stronger. I feel like I'm now entering into a new phase of my life. Yeah. And I was telling my label because we were all trying to figure out, you know, a release date and things like that. And I'm like, this because some of these songs are from two, three years ago. Like I was in a, yeah, like a lot of them, a lot of them. I wrote a while ago and then I finished up recently and I was just in a different space. And so I told my label, I was like, this is the year I have to put it out because after this year, these songs are not going to feel like honest anymore because I'm not carrying that. Yeah, I'm not carrying it. So I want to just leave it here in 2025. And as I move on to 2026 and more years, I'm like in a different space, like even the music I'm making at this moment, it sounds slightly different from this album, you know? Were there lyrics in particular that were harder to sing, harder to perform or to convey than others? Well, the timing that some of the songs were recorded in, everything felt very truthful to the moment I was in. Yeah. Like by true lip, for example, it was a harder song to sing because it's like a vocal kind of acrobatic song. That's my favorite. Thank you. Thank you. It's like one of those songs that when you're finishing it, you're like, ah, like great. It's out. And it's healing. It's therapeutic for you to kind of write. I just call them my diary entries and just put melodies to them and release them into the world. You hit me with an interlude. Yes. Baby, it's two folks going back and forth. There seems like maybe in a couple going back and forth and who was that bitch in Miami? I said, "Hellie, I want to know what it was about for you to be able to bring that energy to this album, to your debut album." Yeah. You know, I felt like there had to be kind of a really angry moment in the album because we go from, you know, the being, oh, so lovey-dovey. This is you for it. This is amazing. And I really, I was like, how do I make it so the change to like the darker songs? Don't feel so abrupt. And how can I get there in the story? And so, yeah, it's been a little dramatic exaggerating a little, a little theatrical. Right. Because personally, I love listening to albums that have a storyline and they take you with them. Yeah. So it really helped the direction of the rest of the songs because I had to put in somewhere where it all changed. Right. And then I go into like the sadder songs, the more reflective, self-love, like how did I get here? Who am I? Do I love myself enough and those sort of songs going into the resolve, which is honestly more of the story learning to put all that love that you're throwing and pouring and outward to put it all back into yourself. Into yourself first. Yeah. Talk to me about the brave face. This was a collaboration between you and Ray. Yes. How did this song come to be? Yeah. Well, this song came to be like a year ago, I think. I was just in a space where I think I was realizing that I was pretending. Like I was pretending like I was good, I was pretending like I was okay, and you know, sometimes being in this industry, we have to show up on red carpets and smile and act like you're this perfect human being when, you know, that's not the reality, like we're all human beings. We all have flaws. Right. You know, we all have struggles and things that we go through for that song in particular. It was really important for me to just be honest and to just tell some of what I was experiencing and going through and, you know, the reflection that you have when you sit, you look in the mirror and you're like, "Am I doing good? Am I doing good enough? Am I fulfilling my purpose?" And so how did you answer that? Giving myself some patience and saying like, "It's okay that I don't have the answers right now, that maybe I don't know if what I'm doing is good enough, but all I have to do is keep trying. All I have to do is keep putting one step in front of the other every day, like little baby steps every day, like you just got to get out of bed, you just got to try. You just have to try." You know, the song that we created and made me really happy, like listening back, it felt like a mantra, like something to lift your spirits, like whenever you do feel that way. Yeah. I know I was angry with how some things felt publicly. Yeah. I also want to know now how you are processing some of that because it can't be easy. No, it's not. Never. I think I've had a lot of practice, though. I think I've had a lot of practice of people saying whatever they want about me, people making whatever assumption about my character up and it's like, "Okay, that's them." I think it's really powerful when you realize that you don't have to prove yourself to anybody but you and the people that know you and love you and I think that's the most special part of it. But I feel like I've had a lot of practice with Mermaid and, you know, I've had a lot of people just throwing scrutiny, they will say a lot of things and that's okay. Like, we all are going through, everybody's going through something and sometimes social with me, like I even find myself, you just project, you're like, "Look at this girl and drama." You know, you just like to talk about it. It's like something to talk about to get your, you know, mind off of whatever life problems that you have going on. So I understand it to be honest and I just don't take it personal. Really? I mean, therapy, I've been working on myself, it's just, you can't take it personal, especially when you're a public figure. Yeah. That's the name of the game. Because I've been telling you, "I'll take it personal for you." I was like, "Hold up. Let me see." It's okay. We're saying we're saying it again. This one has got a flat back. Let's say one more time, I promise I'm going to wear you last time. This one, what did you mean one more second? I think that there are so many times where people want to rally around, we rally around our people. Yeah. And so I just wondered how you were, would you might want people to know about where you are in your life and how you were handling and managing your own stressors? I just am working on it, you know, like, I'm in therapy, I'm like really excited about my life now, my new stuff going on, my movies that are going to come out next year. Like, I'm in a place where I'm just looking at all of the downpour of blessings and just grateful and excited about the future and, yeah, I want people to be excited for me too. But, you know, the people that aren't, that's okay too, go live your life, have fun. Like, we're all here too. Is it what I'm still going to be here? Yeah. And it's what I'm still going to be out. Yes. What was it like your pregnancy that time in your life? What was it like for you? It was such a beautiful, like, I had such a beautiful pregnancy to be honest. I didn't get sick really until, like, the eighth month. Oh, wow. Yeah, he was really good to me, like, he was a good baby and I felt really powerful as a woman, like, when my body was changing and then I was, I learned how to breastfeed. I think you don't realize, you're like, whoa, wait a minute, like, women are really cool. Yeah. And birth life with God's help and, like, it's really cool, so, I don't know, it was a beautiful time. I look at some of my belly pictures. I'm like, wow, like, it's so much fun till just hold him in there. Yeah. And now he's out. I'm like, wow. So cool. It's like, it's crazy. Chloe told me she had a full freak out in the delivery room. Yeah. Chloe was freaking out. My sister is in pain and y'all need to do something right now. What do you remember about the experience of, like, the delivery of bringing him into this world? It hurt. That's what I do remember. I was in pain. But it was like a beautiful payoff. It felt like it feels like a dream. Like when I think about it, I'm like, that didn't happen. Seeing his face for the first time. What was that like? I knew him. Like, I was like, I know it. Like it felt so, so beautiful to just see your face. Like, wow, this is really cool. It's the trippiest thing in the world. Yeah. It's wild. I've been here that I wanted to talk about because I was like, "Mr. Halley, she grown, grown." What are you talking about? Yeah. Heaven is the name of the song. Yeah, yeah. I've been running through hell, waiting for you to wake up, lingerie with no makeup. Yeah. There was something about the dichotomy of, like, running through hell, trying to find my partner, trying to find this person looking for you and finding it. Yeah.
