Governor Gavin Newsom on the Midterms and Trump’s Latest Threats
29m 11s
The podcast features a mix of lifestyle, security, and political content. It promotes WHOOP as a simple, data-driven wearable that helps users understand their health without constant notifications, especially valuable for parents managing sleep and recovery. ADT is presented as a reliable, trusted home security option, offering peace of mind through 24/7 monitoring. Odoo is introduced as a comprehensive business software solution that streamlines operations for small companies. A lighter segment highlights Blinds.com as a way to enhance home comfort and well-being. The majority of the content focuses on political analysis, with strong criticism of Donald Trump’s leadership, including accusations of lack of accountability, foreign ties, and cronyism. Governor Gavin Newsom emphasizes the urgency of protecting democratic processes, citing voter suppression tactics like Prop 39 and the manipulation of election integrity. He calls for a renewed political movement centered on transparency, economic justice, and voter turnout. The episode concludes with a powerful call to action, urging the public to engage in the midterms, defend democratic institutions, and support a more equitable future. The overarching message is one of resilience, vigilance, and collective responsibility in the face of growing political and social challenges.
This episode of the Midas Touch podcast is brought to you by WHOOP, the wearable health and fitness
coach that gives you personalized insights into your sleep, recovery, strain, stress,
and overall health. Listen, I've tried a bunch of wearables and I found a lot of them to be
so overwhelming. I don't need another screen constantly tapping me, pinging me, and sending
me notifications. But that's what I love about WHOOP. The WHOOP 5.0 wearable is screenless,
so it just sits quietly on my wrist collecting data. Whenever I want, I can open the companion
app and get this incredibly detailed picture of what's happening with my body and actually
use that information to make proactive decisions. And with a one-year-old, sleep has become a bit
of a luxury. WHOOP helps me pinpoint the things that are actually affecting me. Did that 4 p.m.
cup of coffee hurt my sleep? Did that run on the treadmill bring down my stress? How well am I
actually recovering? WHOOP gives me a full picture of my health without overloading me, and it's
helped me build a healthier routine around what my body is actually telling me. To learn more,
head to WHOOP.com and join today to get your first month free. That's WHOOP.com.
And there have definitely been nights where I've gotten into bed, realized I forgot to set the
alarm, and instead of getting back up, I just arm it right from the app. It's super convenient. ADT
offers customizable systems that can be professionally installed, and they have the
most company-operated monitoring centers in the industry, helping protect your home 24-7. Their
technology can also help first responders locate you faster in an emergency. For me, it really comes
down to trust. I use ADT, I trust ADT, and having that protection gives me one less thing to worry
about so I can focus on my family and my family. I don't have to worry about my family. I don't have to worry about my
family and actually enjoy those little moments at home. Visit ADT.com today or call 1-800-ADT-ASAP.
When every second counts, count on ADT. It's five o'clock. Your employees are headed home,
but you're still updating spreadsheets, switching between software, and wondering where the day
went. There's a better way. Odoo brings accounting, sales, inventory, CRM, and more together in one
fully integrated platform, so you spend less time managing software and more time managing
software. Odoo brings
running your business, because your workday should end. Eventually. Try Odoo free at Odoo.com.

Lock the certification of the Alaska Senate vote before the vote even takes place. And this has
been widely panned as the most vexatious and frivolous lawsuit. Watch what he says while
he's flanked by DeSantis. Here, play this clip.
Any thoughts on the Alaska lawsuit?
Well, I'm the one that said do it. They have two guys around named Dan Sullivan running.
I know.
So the Democrats put up a guy, never, I don't think you ever voted before.
All of a sudden, he decides to run for the Senate, and his name is Dan Sullivan.
One is Daniel S., one is Daniel J. The Daniel J. is the fake,
and he wants to change his middle initial to Daniel S., but he said this has nothing to do
with politics. And Daniel J. just so happens to be funded by liberal donors. Imagine that. What
a coincidence that is. By Act Blue.
Okay, but he has nothing to do with politics. No, it's a disgrace.
And then it got even worse during this,
whatever you want to call it, press conference on the tarmac next to DeSantis,
where Donald Trump was asked about statements made by Tom Barrack, his ambassador to Turkey,
who said that he believes that Donald Trump may launch an invasion against Iran this weekend.
Donald Trump said, well, that's news to me. I don't know. Folks, this is matter. These are
matters of war and peace. And he's just like, I don't know, baby. I don't know.
Talking about war here. This is so utterly despicable. I want to now bring in California Governor Gavin Newsom, who I interviewed moments ago,
had a lot to chat with him about, about Donald Trump's despicable behavior and the fact that his
cognitive and physical health is so bad. And I want to now bring in California Governor Gavin Newsom,
who I interviewed moments ago, had a lot to chat with him about, about Donald Trump's despicable behavior and the fact that his
cognitive and physical deterioration is getting worse. Let's bring in that interview.
Let's bring in California Governor Gavin Newsom. Governor Newsom, great to see you as always.
I just want to first talk about Donald Trump's behavior lately. I mean, it's always bad. It's
getting weirder and more dangerous. He's talking about men's asses. He's making weird noises.
I fear just young generations, all people just watch this behavior. I just want to get your
take on what you're observing right now. You're observing the end of a President
and see as we know it. You're observing someone that's coming to grips that he's
lost the American people. His time is up. The people around him are increasingly starting to
jump ship quietly, many respects, some more publicly. You saw the act of desperation,
which was in and of itself extraordinarily jaw-dropping in terms of directing the DOJ
and the United States Senate race in Alaska, saying they will not certify the outcome unless
it's their outcome. This is, you know, this is the beginning of the end of Donald Trump
as he's known himself. He's never experienced lame duck status. He's never experienced a kind
of powerlessness that he's experiencing today. He's really been exposed as like a loser though,
right? I mean, like the behavior is very weak, very much a loser. You know, you could say,
give me a little more time. Give me, here's the plan.
Straight up or moves this, that, and the other. Turns out, I think we all knew this. Dude is just
a loser. You see why he bankrupted everything, his whole damn life. No, and that's what's being
exposed. You know, we've talked about in the past, I used to refer to him, to you directly. I said,
he's weakness masquerading as strength, but I don't even see, I don't even see the mask now on
in terms of the masquerading as strength. It's just, it's weakness across the board. It's
court decision after court decision, rebuking him, including just today on the National Guard
question that finally went up to the Ninth Circuit and the Court of Appeals overwhelmingly
rejected his arguments across the spectrum. He's being exposed. He's being played. And the fealty
and the weakness that he's demonstrated, bending the knee to Putin, the weakness that he's displayed
to she, to our enemies around the globe.
Is also extraordinary. So it's an alarming time. It's a sober time for us in terms of the work we
have to do in terms of the time left between now and November 3rd. But this is, this has been a
hell of a week as you, as you describe it. Look, it's not a foregone conclusion that we'd be where
we are now. I think lots of people actually feel who love democracy stronger than ever, but there
were very grim and dark times. And I want to remind everybody what a big deal prop 50 was and how at
that point, we were in a situation where we were in a situation where we were in a situation where
at that time, you standing up doing prop 50 sent a message, not just to California, but across the
country of fighting back. So as we approach the midterms, I'd love to get your reflections of
prop 50, but the broader fight that prop 50, I think triggered nationally.
You know, for me, it's, it's, it, yeah, it was the act and the resolve to fight fire with fire,
to stop trying to win an argument as the other side was consolidating power,
to make a different case that the right is ruthless. And we as the
Democrats need to be in our politics a little more ruthless. That politics had changed. That
means we need to fundamentally change. And I think it was reflected stylistically and substantively
in terms of those lines that were redrawn. But we also drew other lines, and that's lines
of consciousness across this country about so many of the previews of things to come.
And we said at the time, the federalization of the National Guard was a preview of things
to come. Four thousand of our National Guard's men and women federalized. We saw seven hundred fifty
active duty Marines sent not overseas, but to the second
largest city in the country when we kicked off that campaign for democracy uh we were introduced
to a guy by the name of greg bovino uh looking as if he was you know cosplaying just getting off a
set of a 1930s uh movie dressed up accordingly masked men unmarked cars no identification we
said that was a preview of things to come election day board tech teams border patrol tactical units
out there on election day trying to intimidate uh free expression free speech uh all of the assaults
on trust and confidence in our elections and and here today just reminding everyone that
just a week ago he threatened to arrest me and other election officials just a week ago
in california if we count all the votes including 20 000 that he quote-unquote identified
as votes that he says are illegal so this guy's not screwing around we can't take the eye off
the ball everything we've done the last year year and a half has been important uh but even after we
know after we crush it on november 3rd we have to be vigilant because i could see some michigas with
with with johnson uh and i could see some uh some assaults uh on truth trust and the rule of law
uh that will make all the rest of this look like it was a spring training
we want to ask you about those attacks on california where they stand right now but talk
about what you expect to happen in these midterms as you look ahead what do you see happening and
what do you want to kind of call out in advance as well regarding mag and mike johnson and what
you expect they may do after i think it's going to be a historic trouncing but i would love to
get your take what you think but you know it's interesting i'm going to rally here with our
friends at lyonna seiu a lot of labor leaders and and incredibly diverse crowd but you know these
are crowds you're seeing everywhere i've been all over the country in probably 11 12 states at least
many parts of the country in the last few weeks and you're seeing it it's just crowds that are
spilling out you can't find venues you can't find people you can't find jobs you can't find jobs you
can't find venues big enough because people continue to outperform in terms of showing up
for not only themselves but for each other for for their state our country and the world we're
trying to build and it's just the energy's off the charts and the early numbers are off the charts
the early voting it's real this is happening and so it's not i don't think it's conjecture anymore
we're seeing you know it's election day today it's election day tomorrow
in most states certainly in california the last day of the election happens to be
on november 3rd but we're seeing this soon it's a tsunami but we're also seeing this guy sharpen his
knife we saw the doj sharpen its knife up in uh up in alaska we've seen them sharpening the knives
uh in terms of preparing to do what they did after january 6th uh and mike johnson is as you suggest
completely supine uh i ran out of the knee pads uh we are on the third printing of the knee pads
to send to johnson uh and his colleagues in congress uh he will do anything to maintain
his power and so we have to right after this election's done now we dust off refocus recalibrate
and have our legal teams continue to focus on making sure that the folks that are congressional
elects uh across this country all get actually sworn in to the house of representatives and
what i believe will be a majority in the senate what do you see happening in those 100 day what
would you want to see happening in those 100 days in terms of accountability you know corruption's
at the top of people's list right now along with affordability people get that these things are
inextricably intertwined trump and his oligarchs are getting richer than ever as the people are
getting screwed so what do you want to see happen in those first 100 it's both end you got to do
you've got to be we've got to be relentless uh in terms of accountability
you just have to be you can't you can't we cannot allow what happened in the last two years it's not
happened in 250 years we can't just as much as i want to turn the page our better angels we can't
there needs to be accountability and it needs to be driven by the facts and law not politicians not
the feelings i mean what are the where were the laws broken uh you know we we can you know assert
that didn't seem right when you had four executives including the executive from rolex come in with
130 000 million dollars you know we can you know assert that didn't seem right when you had four
executives including the executive from rolex come in with 130 000 million dollars you know we can you know assert that didn't seem right when you had four executives including the executive from rolex come in with 130 000 million dollars
you know we can you know assert that didn't seem right when you had four executives including the executive from rolex come in with 130 000 million dollars gold bar from switzerland and all of a
gold bar from switzerland and all of a
gold bar from switzerland and all of a sudden their
sudden their
sudden their tariff rate went from 39 to 15 uh that
tariff rate went from 39 to 15 uh that
tariff rate went from 39 to 15 uh that doesn't seem right but was it against
doesn't seem right but was it against
doesn't seem right but was it against the law might be uh same thing that
the law might be uh same thing that
the law might be uh same thing that happened 46 tariffs and vietnam that
happened 46 tariffs and vietnam that
happened 46 tariffs and vietnam that dropped to 20 after eric trump and the
dropped to 20 after eric trump and the
prime minister of vietnam got the approval on the golf course doesn't seem right is it illegal might
be the board of peace it's about getting a piece of the middle east and jared kushner wickoff doesn't
seem right did they get a piece is that legal is that across the spectrum albano we can go down the
list not even getting to meme coins and god forbid i'm not even talking about sneakers or our watches
or you know bibles uh but all that needs to be pursued with vigor as we also pursue a relentless
focus on wages a relentless focus on mobility a relentless focus on housing in this country
and start to focus on democratizing the economy not just saving our democracy remind our audience
what prop 39 is and why it's so important right now and why you're out there talking about it just
so they know what is it why what what's the what's the point what's the position it is there's a
direct throughput for what they couldn't achieve federally with the save act and now what they're
trying to do in states like california
to try to restrict the franchise of voting period full stop it's not complicated
it's not complicated why tens of millions of dollars have come from out of state by right-wing
republicans it's not complicated to know why a right-wing republican mega leader in the state
of california put this on the ballot it's to restrict the ability to vote or restrict the
likelihood that people's votes will be counted we should be doing precisely the opposite but this
they know does not ignore to their political power and their influence and so for seniors out there
that have to come up pursuant to this initiative and put their social security nothing goes wrong
there your last four social security numbers on the back of an envelope that anyone can see if
they get one wrong after voting 20 30 years without having to do that their vote is thrown out it's
going to slow down the voting process it's going to disenfranchise seniors disenfranchise people
of color it's going to reduce the participation uh in uh the you know in in our uh foundational
uh you know in well a bottom line this is a disaster designed to hurt the democratic party
reduce the amount of people coming out and turning out to vote people see prop 39 on the ballot what
what should they do vote no come on i mean this is not complicated uh it is in it in this in this
is you know what's what's wonderful this is waking people up as well because it's part of not only the
extension of what happened or didn't happen as it relates to the federal save act and what's
happening in states across the country it's consistent with prop 50 in trying to rig the
election before one vote is cast it's all connected all this weaves together these are all
component parts of what this administration is doing with the doj and irs fbi these power
ministries are doing in this country with the church and the people of color and the people of
this country what the treasury is doing in this country to hold power to take this republic from
us to take it out from under us and so prop 39 is critical to defeat uh and i think it's going on
down to defeat as long as we turn out the numbers uh that uh we have been uh but we can't as i said
today in this rally you can't run the 90-yard dash man uh we cannot everything that got us this far
we got to get over the line on the third you know i've seen you as the governor of california though
also kind of serving as a reminder in the broader international community speaking to international
leaders about what america was and what we can be in the future and i've seen you in brazil i've
seen you in europe i've seen you i've seen you in a bunch of locations but i want to get your
take on that is how important that is but when you see whitcoff and kushner kind of dumb and dumber
trump's scumbag real estate friend from the 80s and the 90s you know in whitcoff
and kushner the son-in-law corrupt as hell running around i think it's just embarrassing to our
country i want to get your take on that well it's humiliating it's embarrassing i mean the founding
fathers lived and died to hold concentration to call power uh dittocracy to account i mean this
is this is what this is oligarchy this is what happens in in putin's russia this is it's it's
humiliation we've lost our moral authority we've lost it in this country it's an extraordinary
thing to do in such a short period of time and you know these are the same folks that were licking the
putin now one of the two you just mentioned was out there calling him humanitarian thank you so
much for taking someone off the streets incarcerating them illegally holding them
hostage and then using them as a bargaining chip uh so that we could continue to make more monies
continue uh to light things up uh in ukraine it's a hell of a moment no moral authority the
lutnik family doubled their net worth in the last year you've seen the 2.2 billion dollars from trump
you talk about kushner's you talk about just the the cronyism that we're seeing now uh and the
self-dealing with the family eric uh and don jr the 6.3 billion dollars they've received uh in federal
contracts uh with their new uh startups in in critical minerals and drones i mean it's jaw
dropping and this is what we know god i mean just imagine what we don't know and every other day we
heard about 50 million dollar bribe to get a part in the war and that's not what we're talking about
just two days ago it took 13 months of investigations to learn about world liberty
financial and the fact that the security advisor at the uae wrote a half a million billion dollar
And the Trump family got close to $300 million of that five days before the inaugural.
And then we find out a few weeks later that it got high-valued NVIDIA chips in return.
They sold out our national security.
I mean, this is all happening.
And that's, again, that's in plain sight.
And it's still, we're coming to grips with it.
And so that's why, again, I do think accountability is foundational.
But I also understand, yes, we need to paint a positive alternative vision where we can
all feel like we're part of that.
We're seen, we're included, and we're going to be held at a time when people don't feel
this economy is nourishing and the dream no longer applies to them.
And so both and needs to be the vigor that we bring to this new majority and a positive
agenda.
There's a chapter in our new book, WTF America, which talks about what we observed you do.
Is that this book right here?
That is, there it is right there.
Is that you in the back of this book?
You know, when you hold it.
When you hold it up like that, that's what they would call a frame mock, right?
You can put my face next to you like that.
Wow, look at this.
Is this available in bookstores today?
The fourth brother right there.
Look at that.
Look at that.
I just, I was told by someone, they whispered, they said, you know, the best way to buy this
book.
And I was thinking, is it Amazon or local bookstore?
They said, no, no, no.
The best way to buy it is to buy it in bulk.
And I was like, wow, that's, that's, that's interesting.
This is a great Christmas.
This gift, holiday gift.
There's a chapter on your, thank you.
There's a chapter on your experience where during the fires, there were all of the, you
had to deal with all those disinformation silos coming out and they were talking about
smelt fish and reservoirs and things that were so false.
And at first you thought, and this is what we write about in the book.
Like, look, this is just the right wing echo chamber.
This stuff's so crazy.
I got a job.
I got to do, I got to focus on the people.
I'm being the governor.
And then about.
Day one and a half, you were like, whoa, whoa, this stuff's catching on.
Like I have to respond.
And I, I write how it's informed kind of, I think your communication style, you know,
one where we write in the chapter to reflect on that and to talk, uh, talk to us about
how important that is going forward, because I think it's a big deal, you know, in terms
of building information, a fire hose of truth to fight back against a fire hose of lies.
Uh, I love that.
And, and literally I just got the book.
I can't wait to read that chapter.
And thank you for that.
And I'm dead serious about everyone.
Come on, you guys are tuning in.
Cause you love these guys.
And the idea that you wrote this book is what a gift to all of us.
Uh, but for me, uh, yeah, I was in the back of my.
And, but candidly, I, I felt like our party was in the back of our heels.
We're being shape-shifted CRT, ESG, DEI, anything with three letters.
You have guys like DeSantis.
We're starting to roll back harder and national rights.
They anti woke act.
They were rewriting history, censoring, historical facts, even just last year, close
to.
Just under 12,000 books were banned in the United States.
And, you know, and, and I just, what the, why is this happening?
And, and so often I was finding myself on the receiving end of it,
playing in this defensive posture.
These guys were leaning in, they were controlling the narrative.
They were dominating the narrative.
The facts didn't matter.
Narrative mattered.
And they have the surround sound, the one American news, Newsmax, not
just what's going on at Fox and the missing disinformation that's 24, seven out of.
That's sewer.
And so for me, there was a recognition.
Again, I said a moment ago for things to change, we need to change.
And that means, you know, you got to look in the mirror.
It's no longer pointing fingers.
And so that, that was a point where I realized, I mean, we're just getting crushed.
And, and they're defining the terms and these lies are spreading around the world.
I'm getting phone calls from friends and family are like, I didn't, they, they
really sincerely believed a lot of the bullshit and that made me realize I had to do.
Something more smash mouth.
I had to lean in.
I had to take risks.
We had to be more clear, less, you know, you know, no more long winded answers like this.
Just, just right in your face, push back, fight, you know, fight fire with fire in the context of what we do with prop 50.
But in terms of how we communicate clarity conviction, if we have a point of view, let's express it.
If you're going to come after us, we're going to go over and over and over and over and over and over and over again.
Meaning you have to be in there for the long game.
We can't be situational.
Communication matters and Biden with respect.
This is my reflection.
It's not an indictment, but I think the Biden administration had what many of us have.
And that's the enlightenment theory, which is somehow good ideas sell themselves.
And in Biden had plenty of good ideas.
He delivered real results, the chips and science act, the IRA, the infrastructure bill, what he was able to do across the spectrum of 400 bipartisan bills and gun safety and all kinds of, I think, extraordinary things that he was able to accomplish, but they didn't succeed.
They didn't sell themselves.
And so people didn't believe it.
They didn't know about it and they didn't buy it.
And so we've got to sell consistently, sell our, you know, our points of view, don't sell out, don't sell our soul, but continue to communicate and do it more efficiently, effectively and more relentlessly than we have in the past.
And that was what I learned quite literally stepping there in the embers, not just the ashes as those fires were raging in Southern California.
Final question and final message you want to send to the people.
The people before we go, just how important is this moment right now?
And there may be people saying, do I need to participate?
What should I do?
What's your final message?
Come on.
It just, I don't dream of regretting.
I mean, this, this is one you're going to hold each of us are going to be judged, but I think more harshly, we're going to judge ourselves to the extent we contributed to this moment in a positive and enlightened way.
I, this enough don't fall prey to the cynicism and the anxiety out there.
Don't fall prey to notion that somehow this thing's a fatal complete, that we can just dial things in.
We've got to dial it up.
We got to send one of the most powerful messages ever been sent in the history of this country.
And we've got to send that message to the rest of the globe to your point.
So the people all around the world hear us, that we are not the American, this country, it's not over that.
We're just beginning that we're resilient.
This will be in a process of renewal that all of us are going to be repairs of the breach that the best is yet to come and that the status quo that we all have.
Can.
Tempt for does not need to continue after November 3rd.
We collectively, we, all of us together can end Donald Trump's presidency as we know it.
And let's prove that point.
Let's not just assert it and let's turn out in record numbers and that's all then reconvene the day after the election and continue that work as we have to come that deep, hard work that we're going to have to advance moving forward.
Yeah, I feel really good heading into these midterms polls.
Don't vote.
So people need to get out there, but I want to remind everybody because.
So much happens in the new cycle.
I really want to emphasize how important prop 50 was, and I know it'll be remembered historically as a real moment where people fought back against what the Trump regime was doing, taking agency and to see a leader like you, the leader of a state with the third largest or fourth, the third largest economy in the world, um, you know, step up and take that fight on, I think will be remembered.
I want all of our subscribers.
And viewers to, to also reflect on that moment, as I think we'll be celebrating a big day together, governor Newsome.
