We're going to start off by talking about a few predetermined topics we got lined up for you guys. Then in the second part of the show, is when I'm going to take your live comments and questions. All right. Let me see if I can do this. And yes, we can. All right. Let's get things started off here today. Shall we, guys? And today we're going to start off with this. Well, you guys may have heard. We've been talking about it a little bit. There's been a lot of whispers, some talking about a Jimmy Olsen and Gorilla Grodd show. And, you know, I've kind of been. Are we really going to have Jimmy Olsen in three different things before we ever get Batman? Are we literally going to have Jimmy Olsen in three different things before we get Wonder Woman? Wonder Woman? And you guys have known my thoughts on that. But today, the official announcement came out, and I have to admit, I am a little bit more intrigued. Variety is here reporting that the official title is now officially greenlit. HBO has officially put in the series order, and it is called The People vs. Gorilla Grodd as a mockumentary series set at HBO Max. Skyler, Gizondo, and Jimmy Tatro are going to be starring in it. Now, of course, Skyler plays Jimmy Olsen, and Jimmy, he's been in a bunch of things recently, but, of course, he got his big breakout thing in American Vandal, which is not the only connection to this. But listen to this. HBO Max is officially moving forward with their DC Studios mockumentary series now titled The People vs. Gorilla Grodd. The show was first officially reported back in November of 2025, but now HBO Max has given the show an eight-episode order. Now, this is where it gets interesting. The logline for the show states, a super-intelligent ape being played by Tatro is convicted of murdering his father, the king of Gorilla City. In an eight-part true-crime docu-series, The Daily Planet's Jimmy Olsen reopens the case investigating whether Gorilla Grodd was wrongfully convicted in one of Metropolis' most famous murder trials. Okay, look. Everything I said before, guys, about it feels very wrong that we're literally going to have a Jimmy Olsen character in Superman, in People vs. Gorilla Grodd, in Man of Tomorrow, before we even get Batman in the universe. I mean, there's just something off about that, and I don't change my thought on that. However, when you realize that this is going to be showrun by the two guys who created American Vandal, which was amazing. American Vandal was so funny and so good. And it played on that whole true-crime wave. Like, what was the main one? That main one that got everybody interested, and it was that kid who got convicted of murdering his girlfriend, but the reason we're revisiting whether or not he actually did it, I can't remember the name of it. I'm sure a lot of you guys in the live chat remember. It was like the most famous podcast in the world for a while. But anyway, American Vandal was kind of a play on that. And for them to bring this into the world of DC, I'm not going to lie, guys. I kind of low-key love this. Again, I'm not taking away any of the stuff that I said before about the fact that, listen, we're getting an awful lot of projects here before we even have two of the three Trinity members in the DCU, like TikTok everybody. But if you were to ask me in a vacuum, the creators of American Vandal doing a mockumentary true-crime docu-series of one of Metropolis's most intrepid reporters reopening a murder cold case that saw Gorilla Grodd be convicted and diving in and investigating that in a vacuum, I would say, hell yes. Yes, all of this. Listen, if I'm going to be honest, this just sounds like a straight-up fantastic idea. I think it sounds wildly entertaining. Again, that does not take away any of my previous feelings that we should be getting Batman going before a Jimmy Olsen show. We should be getting Wonder Woman going before a Jimmy Olsen show. Maybe meet Flash. Maybe meet Cyborg. Maybe meet Aquaman. I don't know. But this by itself, in this vacuum, I think sounds absolutely wonderful. Like, I like it way more than what I thought it was going to be, which was a traditional narrative procedural show. Mockumentary-style docu-series about a crime that Jimmy Olsen doesn't think Gorilla Grodd committed. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't completely tantalized by it. I think it sounds really good. Anyway, Rob, we've been talking about this, the idea of doing Jimmy Olsen and Gorilla Grodd show, which still is a bit of a head-scratcher in general, I admit. But I gotta say, I love the sounds of this. I don't know, you finally got to read the logline today like I did. What do you make of it? Well, again, it's certainly a high-wire act in terms of writing. And I think they've got the right people involved to do it. But, you know, I hope it doesn't descend into. I mean, it's kind of like what I hoped would happen with She-Hulk. You know, I wanted to see a comedic show set in the MCU that would deal with what are the legal ramifications of metahumans running around doing all kinds of things. You know, how does that affect the MCU? To me, I thought the possibilities of storylines and characters showing up and cameos and yet a real examination into what would happen, you know? And we didn't get that. And to me, this could be a really great both a really interesting show about the DC universe itself, but also at the same time a meta send-up and very comedic look at our own world. You know, it's a mirror reflection of what's going on in our own world today. And that's where great satire comes from. So when I was reading this, I'm like, okay, okay. You know, I mean, people forget that Jack Kirby introduced the new gods in the pages of Superman's pal Jimmy Olsen. Yeah. So, you know, we could see some really interesting, I mean, I'm in for this, man. But again, I admit, it's going to take a real deft touch when it comes to the writing of this because it could go off the rails really fast. But if it doesn't go off the rails, it could be classic. And that's what gives me a little bit of hope right now is the fact that the two guys running it are the guys who just literally wrote the book on how to do a show like this when they did American Vandal. Right. Because I was shocked how fun and entertaining and funny that show was. And it never once, because that show felt like from episode one, it felt like any minute, like you said, at any minute, it could go off the rails. And it never did. It never did. It always did. It always, like, skated on that line. And if they can bring that to a show like this, and again, the same kind of caveat that we apply to Lanterns, guys, it's HBO. When do they miss? Rarely. Rarely. And, you know, John, James Gunn said this was something they were pitching before Peter Safran and him took over the DC universe. So this has been a show that they've been discussing for a while. And like you said, if it's HBO. I mean, if you think about HBO comedies, all the way back to a favorite of mine, Dream On, from the early 90s, which, you know, Brian Ben-Ben is Martin Tupper, which I guess is on Tubi now. I think this could be great stuff. I really do. Now, I see some people in the live chat, understandably so, saying something like, yeah, but this isn't what the DCU needs right now. You know what the DCU needs right now? Well-received properties. Yeah. That's what they need. It doesn't matter because, listen, what do you think would be, what does the DCU need right now more? A great people versus Gorilla Garage show that critics and audiences really love or a Batman movie that people are lukewarm on? Now, obviously, all of the things being equal, we would all say great, fantastic Batman movie. But at the end of the day, winning cures everything. Right. And so if this show comes out, and if it's even 75% as good as American Vandal, this will be exactly what the DCU needs. The DCU needs wins because, listen, Peacemaker great, Superman great, but we're coming off of a big loss with Supergirl. And, you know, guys, they seem to get their footing back. Lanterns was fucking fantastic episode one. We'll see if it goes off the rails or not. Can't wait for Sunday. I'm looking forward to it. I'm just hoping it doesn't go to crap after a great intro. But, I mean, you follow, okay, fine. Supergirl was, you put that one down in the L column. No argument from me. 100%. It was a bad movie. But you follow that up with Lanterns, if it stays as good as the premiere episode was. And then you follow that up with Clayface, that if that's even half as good as it looks, we're all going to be happy. And then you follow that up with another really good show. Am I still going to be? Am I still going to be whining like a little bitch that we don't have Batman yet? Yeah, probably. But just when you start whining, you're going to get Man of Tomorrow. And if that's great. Yes. And then if that's. So, I mean, what they really need, especially coming off of Supergirl, is quality stuff. And the people behind this give me a lot of hope. So I got to tell you, I'm warming up to it. I'm warming up to it a lot. I say do what you want when it's a series. If it's a series, reach for the sky. But the pillars need to start being established. Yeah, I agree. Anyway, guys, question is for you. What do you think about this? Apparently, they are moving forward. And I like the name of the show, to be honest with you. The People vs. Gorilla Grodd as a mockumentary docu-series right in the vein of American Vandal. And look at that being made by the guys who made American Vandal. I love the sounds of it. I like the looks of it. It could go, like Rob was suggesting, this could go way wrong. Like She-Hulk did. It could go way wrong. But if they strike the right chord, this could be kind of awesome. Anyway, whatever you guys think, jump down to the comment section below and let us know your thoughts. All right, guys. With that down, let's move on to this. So we were just talking about, you know, the state of the DCU and all that kind of stuff. And the fact that lanterns. Got off the ground to an incredible first episode. Like, honestly, when we started hearing about it's going to kind of be true detective in the DC universe, I started getting some pretty high hopes and high expectations. But could they actually deliver on that? And then I watched the first episode and I'm like, damn, they did it. This is true detective in the DC universe. And it feels amazing. And the performances are top notch. The story. Is gripping. They're seamlessly jumping between time periods. I thought this is off to a great start. Well, looks like I wasn't the only one. Because according to the story and deadline, everybody wanted to tune in to watch lanterns. Lanterns premieres among HBO's Max's top titles, besting DC Studios predecessor, the Penguin. And it wasn't just the Penguin. It was others as well. Deadline goes on to write this. The company confirms that. The show was a success. It was a success. It was a success. It was a success. Those of several tentpole series, including it. Welcome to Derry. And you guys remember like how it, how big that show premiered. It was crazy. So it out, it outdid it. Welcome to Derry. It outperformed the Penguin and it out to perform true detective night country, which by the way, I think is underrated amongst the true detective seasons. Anyway, those who went on to average 27.1 million, 19.8 million and 17.5 million global viewers respectively. Making a good case for the trajectory of lanterns. All right. What I am not surprised about because I saw the episode, like most of you guys did. What I'm not surprised about is the fact that people like the show so far. Like that doesn't surprise me because I think it's great. And so I'm not surprised. A lot of other people think it's great. I think the last I checked, like the critic rating. It was somewhere around a 92 or 93%, maybe 94 or something like that. Um, strong audience scores to all that kinds of not surprised about that, but here's what I am kind of surprised at. I didn't know if anybody else was interested in the show other than me. Like, remember we're talking about the first episode. So the word hadn't gotten out that this, I mean, yeah, there's some reviews that come out guys, but like word hadn't gotten out. That the series is great. There hadn't been word of mouth yet because people hadn't seen it. So I'm not surprised that people liked it. I am kind of surprised that this many people were interested in tuning in and watching that first episode and considering how good it was. I think it's ratings are only going to go up. I mean, I think this is probably going to end up being the highest view DC series, maybe ever. Um, so I, I'm, I'm going to be honest with you, Rob. I'm kind of surprised. By these numbers, pleasantly surprised, but surprised by them. Anyway, question is for you, Rob, what do you think about these numbers? They're saying like it actually outperformed penguin and outperformed it. It's one of their biggest debuts ever. I don't know. Are you surprised by those numbers? And do you see these ratings going up, going down? What do you think? Well, look, you know, first of all, I think people forget that they've got two great marquee draws in Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre. Yeah. Aaron, Aaron peers coming off. A rebel Ridge and that movie did very well and people loved him in that because he kicked ass and Kyle Chandler is not just Friday night lights. He was in that show. What is it? Bloodlines? Yeah, he was great in that. He was great in that and he's turned in not a bad performance. Um, and I think the, the, the pairing of those guys was sort of irresistible. You know, you see him, I think a lot of people might have tuned in, not even knowing it was a superhero oriented show, but it ticks a lot of boxes. I mean, I think it's a lot of people who are just like, Oh, I'm going to go with this guy. I'm going to go with this guy. that a lot of people tuned into this show and are loving it, but we'll see how it goes for the next seven weeks. Well, that's my next question for you is like seeing the numbers that it got on it's for its initial episode and having watched the episode as you did, what do you see the trajectory being for the, is this going to be like one of those WandaVision things where the word gets out and the, the viewing just increases from week to week? Do you see it plateauing a bit? Do you see it declining? How do you see it performing moving forward? Well, it's, it's hard to say because the only question, the only answer I could have for you is, well, if it's good, people continue to watch it. It looks like it's going to be good for me. I mean, I think that, you know, you've got gold in the relationship between the two of them. There's a really good secondary cast. There's all kinds of interesting stuff going on. And at the end of the day, it's also a mystery. So I think people are going to want to know what the hell's going on in this town. So I, I think that we'll know, you know, know a lot on Sunday night when the second episode is aired, but I I'm optimistic that the show is going to do quite well because if it does, I wouldn't mind seeing more DC characters treated not to this specific take, but shown in, in a more mature grounded light. So I'm looking forward to it. I think it's going to do well. I talk about the mystery of it. I mean, I've already seen 5,000 theories about the ending of episode one, like people are engaging and, you know, here's the thing, Rob, like you mentioned that there, you know, there's a bunch of people who don't like it. I don't know, man, the numbers say there's not that many people who don't like it. Right. I mean, there's some, obviously there's some because it's art arts can hit everybody differently. So they're just naturally, there's gonna be some people who watch it and say, ah, this doesn't work for me. And that's totally fair. But I, I'm actually, kind of surprised about how well this thing has been received. And again, I'm, I'm kind of surprised by the numbers we got already. Lanterns? I mean, it's good. We knew that, but I'm kind of surprised by how many people decided to tune in to watch episode one. Did you watch episode one? What do you think is going to happen to the viewership numbers going forward? Was that big debut, just a flash in the pan because people were curious, or do you think it's going to grow? I don't think it's a big hot take. And I don't think it's that much of a stretch to say it's pretty much universally agreed upon that the best drama on series TV right now is the pit. I mean, not only are viewers obsessed with the, with it and winning all the awards, but I've gone to a couple of Paley fest events, guys, you know, you know, those things are where the, all the TV people get together and the couple that we've gone to the producers and stars who are on the stage when they get, when they get around to the question of what are you watching right now? Everybody's like the pit, the pit. I'm obsessed with the pit. Like every single one of them. I remember I was at the Paley fest event for shrinking and one of the guys from shrinking is now on. The pit as well. He's on both. And like the show runner of shrinking is like, just get me an invite to see the, like the, the advanced screener. Give me something. Get like, get me in touch with somebody on the show. Like even people in the television industry are completely obsessed with the pit. Anyway, it had a great first season. Then could it follow up with season two? My God, season two was probably even better. And now, even though it's not coming out till January, they want to, remind you they're coming back because they kind of surprised a lot of people by dropping their first trailer for season three. Of course, you remember at the end of season two, Dr. Robbie leaves for a sabbatical and we now see him coming back and talking about, he didn't realize it'd be this hard in the trailer, but here's the thing about the pit and about this trailer for the pit. It stressed me the F out as it should. Oh my God. Even just watching the trailer in all the best ways. I was getting so stressed out. And you know what? It would be easy for a show to go. Let's just be a shock show where, you know, we'll show it's a, it's in an emergency room. So you can show a lot of gross things or they can go late. Let's just go real drama or they go, Oh, let's make it a real character show. The pit has found a way to be all of it all at once. It is incredible characters. Like the characters are all so unique and, and contrast so well and all have great depth. The stories that they're dropping. These characters in are emotionally compelling. And I get like that one story we talked about already, the storyline last season about the mom who was dying and she had her kids there and like, ah, but like, I feel like almost every single one of the storylines that they drop their characters in are compelling. And then, on top of all that, they give you the gratuity factor of like, Oh my God, they just saw through that guy's leg and like, ah, and, and as a cherry on top about four or five or six times through each episode, I'm legitimately laughing out loud. Like it's, it can be when it wants to be legitimately funny, which brilliantly breaks up that heaviness that is so inherent to the show that they know everyone, once in a while they pepper in these really good laughs to kind of let you breathe for a second. And then it's right back in with a pencil to the torso, right? It's, it just does that. It's brilliant. And Rob, I watched this trailer and I got all of those feelings. I got all of it wrapped up in this little like minute and 30 second thing. Anyway, where's your anticipation level like for the pit season three right now? And ultimately, what did you think about the trailer for it? Well, look, this show is, is a, a terrific show. And what I'm surprised by is when you start it, it's almost like being on an amusement park ride. Your, your adrenaline goes up. You know, you can't, this isn't a show that you sit back and, you know, drink a mint julep. It's, it's, it's, it's the kind of like Dr. McCoy, you know, in the south you're, you're, you're, you're like you said, it's, it does have humor, but it's tense, man. I mean, the camera's always moving around. Nothing's stopping. And you know that there's always going to be some calamity around the next corner. And what is that going to be? And I love all the actors and I love the fact that, that when you're, you're so, the show is so immersive that you can't look away and it's, it's really interesting. So obviously I think everybody's responded to it. People recognize it's excellence. It's like, it's like they've taken every, everything that medical dramas have given us for the last 60 years. And distilled it into this modern thing that, that only could exist now. And as for the trailer, again, you know, it's, it's, it's the pit and I, I can't wait, you know, I, who knows what's going to happen, but I love this show because it goes by so fast. Oh yeah. And I, and I feel if I had like, sometimes there's days when I'm like, I didn't accomplish much. I sit down and watch a lot of those when I sit down and watch this show, I feel like I've gone. I've gone through something. So every episode makes me feel better about my life. It is one of those shows where I mean, it's one of the five or six shows that Ann and I make sure we watch together. But every time the screen goes black and the first credit comes up, we're like, what, what, wait, it's over. It's over. Like it's, there's not like shows. Shogun did that to me. Yeah. Yeah. Um, and, and not a lot of shows do, but, but that, this is one of the ones that do that. Every time the episode's over, like, no, no, no, no, no, no. Like you, you just hanging on wanting to see it next. And I know Jonathan, is this a show you've been watching? Yeah. And you know, I was going to say just kind of going off of Rob, what he was saying, you'd actually nailed it perfectly when you said it's a show for our time. And it feels so real. I mean, to steal your term, it's not really your term, but you use it a lot. The verisimilitude of it all. Yeah. Yeah. Do you guys remember the movie, the proposition with Guy Pearce? Oh yeah. Oh yeah. So it's a weird comparison, but Denison and I agree with him. Denison used to say that movie had, was so real that you felt like you could smell the Cowboys, the characters and everything around it. You literally feel like you can smell the stress off of the people in the pit. Yeah. And like, like you can smell, like it's so real. You feel so in that hospital, you can get all of the senses into it. The way they do that is incredible. So you feel like you're just pinned in there with them. It's incredible. And by the way, I forget what the episode count has been. What's it been? 13, 14, 15, something like that. And look at that streaming world. They're able to put out a new season every year. Yeah. I thought that wasn't possible. Anyway, I just, I just love this show so much and I'm so happy that we're getting our first glimpses of it. What did you think about this first trailer for the pit season three? If you're not watching this show, I mean, look again, it's art. It's not going to be for everybody. Maybe it won't be for you, but I think there's a good chance you'll like it. You should go check it out. independent third-party firm looking at what would the economic impact be on la and in california should paramount and the warner brothers merger go through now of course you guys remember netflix was also trying to get their hands on warner brothers and i think i speak for all of us on the show when i say our general preference was that nobody by warner brothers and that warner brothers just be left alone as its own thing but you remember that netflix was trying to get it now should had netflix have gotten it it would have been netflix entering into the movie the the theatrical movie business something they had never been in and one of their what big strong commitments was we're not going to touch warner brothers it's going to stay as its own thing it's going to operate its own thing we're not going to lay anybody off because we have no overlap we are our streaming company they're a movie company blah blah blah but we knew just by the nature of it because paramount is also a theatrical movie platypus economics available now wherever you get your podcasts company that there would be some redundancies and when there are redundancies that means layoffs well indiewire is now reporting on a report that was done that showed that the paramount purchase of warner brothers could cost the studios 4,500 jobs and over 10,000 jobs in the entertainment space in general this is the entertainment conglomerates will force the companies to cut costs aggressively as they try to pay down nearly 80 billion dollars in debt which of course will be out of the total 110 billion dollars of debt the study's authors estimate that the merger could have as much wider impact across the states putting at risk 10 360 jobs ranging from producers and agents to people who rent sound equipment so this is all of course a third party independent assessment that was commissioned by the local government to take a look at and see what would happen now again to be fair to be fair to paramount whenever you have a uh vertical or a yeah vertical kind of merger like this you're going to get overlap you're going to get redundancy just for example if you have somebody who's the head of sanitation in on the studio lot well you don't need two you need one and and that always leads to some layoffs this would not it's not like paramount would be the only one doing that we've seen that happen with other mergers and acquisitions it'll always be a part of it but what they weren't prepared for was that that number was going to be quite that high and when you're talking about 10 000 jobs that gets kind of excessive and listen i think that would be 10 000 jobs guys and that's not paramount being jerks about it i think that would be paramount just literally going in and saying what jobs do we still need and what jobs do we not and you don't keep jobs that you don't need to pay for just because i mean you cut those jobs and that's just one of the things again paramount wouldn't be the only guys what's that not with their not with their debt i mean but it's what happens whenever there's a merger right so this wouldn't just be a paramount thing this is a thing that generally happens but that doesn't take away from the stark harshness of the reality of this will probably mean within those two studios alone 4 500 people are going to get fired and then the effect on the current state of the lawsuit why it's happening and why it doesn't look great for paramount right now step one the clayton act which is the law of law specifically says that it prohibits any mergers that may substantially lessen competition in an industry or tend to create a monopoly well what defines whether it lessens competition or creates a monopoly what's the definition of that the law doesn't say but then the supreme court did step in and said the definition is 30 the supreme court threshold the court held that a horizontal merger resulting in a single firm controlling at least 30 of a market creates a rebuttable presumption that the merger is inherently anti-competitive and unlawful to section 7 part 1 the law says you can't have a merger if it lessens competition and could lead to a monopoly part 2 the supreme court ruled that the definition of that is 30 if a merger creates a 30 domination in a market that lessens competition and that can lead to a monopoly step 3 the judge hearing this case has already ruled that it looks like the state has provided evidence that this merger will result in paramount as it says in the one line on this combined firm market share alone the court is persuaded that it can presume that the proposed merger is likely to violate antitrust laws that's it that's what this whole thing is about anybody you hear anybody else chirping trying to make it sound like it's about other things this is it this is the law the law says can't have a merger if it creates anti-competitiveness the supreme court said the definition of that is 30 and a judge has already ruled yep it looks like this merger is going to create more than a 30 which ergo violates the law that's all this is about now they're still trying to see if they can settle this and i hope they do but the only way this is going to get settled is if paramount voluntarily gives up some massive assets that would take them under the 30 threshold so whether that means giving up hbo max whether that means giving up all the tv networks not just one of them all of them whether that means keeping everything else but giving up warner brothers pictures they're gonna have to give up something settlement means you gotta give up something and so far the only thing paramount has said they're willing to give up is cnn and that's a one percent thing that's nothing that's a nothing burger in all this it doesn't move the needle so i hope they're able to settle this and not drag everybody through a year and a half long thing of this but anyway rob we've talked a lot on this show about you know the lawsuit we've talked a lot about uh why the things we like the things we don't like all this kind of stuff but now we have this independent third party thing giving us this report putting now actual numbers to it this could cost up to 10 000 jobs which again would not be this isn't paramount's fault because that wouldn't be unique to paramount but it doesn't change the fact that it would be 10 000 jobs as somebody who has worked in this industry for as long as you have for somebody who has worked with unspeakable numbers of people who are affected by what goes on in this industry and as somebody who's worked in this industry in this district uh what did you make of this report and what really stands out to you the most well look i think it's it's really terrifying to be honest because the ramifications are not just within the industry it's with the entire city of los angeles i you know i was watching a video yesterday about sunset boulevard which is a place that i spent a good 20 years frequenting going to clubs when i was in my 20s and going to other places like the house of blues when i was in my 30s and it's basically gone you know all of these so many storefronts are closed and this is the world famous sunset boulevard where all the rock and roll clubs used to be and the problem is there's no industry la people don't realize how dire it already is here and to lose all of the more all of these jobs if we're not going to bring production back to this city the the the industry is you know it's it people have to understand that it's everything it's bars it's restaurants it's dry cleaners it's car dealerships it's all the other businesses that require economic ancillary ancillary businesses yeah for everything if if there's 10 000 jobs probably multiplies out to 100 250 000 jobs i wouldn't be surprised that every one person out of work that's 25 more people that are out of work because of all the different go ahead i'm sorry jonathan i don't know and to your point it's just like this came off of a big promise that paramount was in the best position to move this this industry forward by what consolidating it and shrinking it and making fewer jobs and fewer you know it's like come on well also you know you think about these you have two major film backlots and my first regular industry job was i worked for the senior vice president of feature film production at warner brothers bill young and when i worked there this is in the you know 89 90 the lot was a buzz you know there was we had 15 films going at any one time and a lot of them were being shot on the warner brothers lot in burbank you know and you you're butting up against universal studios on one end you walk a block down and there was disney and it it was a buzz with activity and then over the last 35 years more uh everything has gone to canada chicago louisiana georgia now things are moving over to england i mean we're killing our industry and it's it's it's not just the industry itself it's everybody that benefits from a healthy economy and la is is a city that it we're a zombie city as it is and by the way i just want to i still see some people in the live chat going on about guys you got to start spreading this around the there's a myth that gets perpetuated about this it says well why didn't anybody try to stop the disney fox merger they did the department of justice sued to stop the disney and fox acquisition and what happened was they settled how did they settle disney gave up a big chunk of the stuff they gave up fox news they gave up a like tons of local networks they gave up fs1 they gave up fs2 they gave up a lot of stuff which is why fox still exists fox is something separate and different and they call the studios now called 20th century so again just clarify that they did sue to stop the disney merger it's just that they settled and disney was willing to give up a big chunks to take them under the 30 threshold that's what we're all hoping can happen now with the paramount warner brother deal anyway guys whatever you want to know about disney what do you think about this whole thing now jump down into the trailer for wildwood came out which is of course being directed by uh travis knight gorgeous trailer uh oh just just a remarkable trailer one of my favorite trailers of the year anyway travis knight who also directed kubo and the two strings directed the best live action transformers movie with bumblebee but then he directed masters of the universe and i thought masters the universe was poop um i i was really excited about it guys i because it was travis knight i was thrilled with the cinema con presentation they gave us a year ago and i had high hopes for it and i thought it was just poop not the worst film of the year by any stretch it had it had some things going for it i think both of you guys liked it a lot more than i did i enjoyed it there was just scenes that i hated in the beginning but overall i enjoyed it yeah so i mean i i thought again i just thought it was poop had some upside but garbage and the box office reflected that i don't think it made 120 million at the box office no 113 global 113 113 globally dune 3 is going to make more than that on opening weekend domestically um so there's that but it got a big robust advertising campaign it got a lot of awareness raised and like i said i may not have liked it but these two guys did and i know a bunch of you guys did as well and so it was really interesting to see the hallowed reporter put out that you know it's a really good movie and i think it's going to be a great movie and it's going to be a great movie and i think it's going to be a great movie and i think it's going to be a great movie because they were so young they were taken in by the gen x and millennials though the few that went to see the movie they took their kids i saw it personally but but gen z was not there and you need that gen z like audience anyway guys question is for you masters of the universe a movie i didn't like but a bunch of people did and it did absolutely crappy at the theaters like it lost a ton of is on the way and you know we've talked a lot about uh ticket sites crashing and now they are projecting that this is going to eclipse spider-man brand new day's opening weekend box office record some people even whispering the number 400 million as an opening weekend which i think sounds mathematically impossible possible but i'm not going to write off anything at this point well it is an avengers movie and as such it kind of is the culmination of a number of things and so marvel decided to put out an official list homework if you will for people of 15 things you are supposed to watch 15 things you are supposed to watch before going in to watch avengers doomsday now one of the things that i've always said guys the nightmare of a cinematic universe is you have to make sure you avoid ever putting out something that requires homework for an audience to go see it well marvel's got homework for you 15 films 15 projects you're supposed to see let's take a look at seeing what they say you need to watch to go watch avengers they're saying this in no particular order you got to watch the original x-men you got to watch x-men 2 notice that they're not saying x-men 3 uh you have to watch captain america the first avenger you got to watch the avengers you got to watch avengers infinity war and endgame notice no you don't have to watch ultron uh maybe they'll maybe they'll put that on the homework list to watching a vision quest you got to watch loki on the tv side you got to watch shang chi and the legend of the ten rings you got to watch spider-man no way home which may or may not suggest to the audience about some people that might pop up in doomsday but they're saying you they marvel saying you got to watch spider-man no way home you got to watch black panther wakanda forever you got to watch captain america brave new world which i guess you got to understand hey wait a minute why is uh why sam wearing the shield you got to watch dead pool you got to watch dead pool and wolverine interesting yeah huh you got to watch dr strange in the multiverse of madness you got to watch thunderbolts understandably there are some of the main characters in this one and you got to watch fantastic four first steps which is understandable because there's a bunch of characters here that have been introduced in something else all right look rob one of the things that went through my head when going over i guess it's been about a year now going over everything that happens in doomsday one of the things that really stood out to me was you know one of the really good things about doomsday is i feel like well they will not catch every inference and they won't catch every wink and they won't catch every reference i feel like this is getting back to marvel's bread and butter where a new era is coming and i feel like this is getting back to marvel's bread and butter where a new era is coming and i feel like this is getting back to marvel's bread and butter where a new era is coming where a new era is coming and i feel like this is getting back to marvel's bread and butter where a new era is coming viewer could honestly just jump in and watch it and not feel lost they won't understand the relevance of everything that's going on in the scenes of course but i feel like this is a story that if you didn't know anything else you could probably step in and never feel lost like the movie will keep you up to date they'll let you know what you need to know along the way and you'll be good now somebody who does know the library of the mcu will probably get more out of it sure but i feel like this is getting back to marvel's bread and butter where a new era is coming viewer could honestly just jump in and watch it where a new era is coming and i feel like this is getting back to marvel's bread and butter where a new era is coming like they understood their reference yeah they're getting back to not needing they're not they're getting back to not needing to do homework before jumping in and watching it there's some interesting things here on this list loki i mean i get uh because loki and his role currently in the universe probably got to have a little bit of an understanding of that get it and the tva and the tv yes and the tvas there's there's a couple of key moments that involve the tva shang chi tells me that he's not just going to be fighter number five in the background there's going to be shang chi's has going to have a relevant role to play in this movie which is great spider-man no way home um talking about you know talking about incursions and other other worlds and stuff like that much like doctor strange in the multiverse of madness i think those are the projects that kind of lay the foundation of that deadpool wolverine also has a little bit of that dealing with multi uh multi-universal stuff captain america brave new world again introduced sam as captain the new captain america and of course the new falcon and things like that and understanding that there's why there are two avengers teams well this is a movie that's going to help explain that as well as thunderbolts and and fantastic four of course because we get introduced to them um i i don't know about infinity war and endgame or first avenger or i guess you should know that but i don't know about should know who the x-men are but this is a pretty long list rob of things they're saying you got to do is homework um when somebody asked me i think on the show a few weeks ago and they said john if you had to say there were like three things that you should really make sure you watch before watching doomsday and i said well maybe infinity war and endgame just to kind of make sure you're up to speed and probably maybe thunderbolts and fantastic four because that's where we're at but i think you're good otherwise what do you think about this list what if anything on that list is standing out to you it's like oh that's interesting that marvel put this on the list and had somebody asked you what are like maybe three things i really should watch before watching this what would you say to that that's a lot well first of all i would say what's interesting about this list is it it there is a fun factor involved you know the fact that you you can now do some homework and over the next four months you can sit down and watch these in order and i do think that there's more more in these movies about setting up the mechanisms for what's actually going on for instance like the idea that the villains in in no way home were pulled out at the moment of their own deaths you know that they were that they were brought into our universe and that that there is their fate is involved and the thing with loki it explains the tva and the sacred timelines and what incursions all mean and i think that while you don't i don't think you need to watch anything to understand what's going on in in avengers doomsday but there's so much world building that it would help that if you understood more um concepts rather than plot and there's a lot of conceptual stuff in all of these movies that help you because the culmination of what is an incursion what does this mean you know there's multiple earths involved and there's different characters involved and there's a lot of lore involved and where do the x-men come from well if you saw the void you met gambit and so there's there's all this backstory an understanding of how the universe works that's what i think they're trying to do is is allow you to have a more the german word gestalt you understand the gestalt of it all before you have to sit down and watch for the casual movie going hey look you know what for a family to be able to sit down and prepare to go to doomsday and have this fun you know yeah it's fun it's a fun it's a fun like i would say for marvel it's it's kind of fun you you can talk about what do all these things mean how does it all work together because if you watch deadpool and well if you're watching deadpool one and two you get it but when you get to deadpool and wolverine what is the void who is cassandra nova why what is going on where have they gone what is the tva who are these people deadpool's killing at the beginning of that movie so i think that it's it's good that they're doing all this that said i don't think you watch any of it to enjoy doomsday i think you'll just get it and you'll be able to infer what's going on doomsday is a bad guy he's manipulating time and things go wrong or right depending on who you are this meme reminds me of like yeah one does not simply watch avengers doomsday yeah right uh but you know we live in an age too where you can go onto youtube and do breakdowns of all these movies you can do there's breakdown videos of the entire mc u yeah yeah so if you want to watch that a couple of times or watch a couple different ones you can do that and save some time i watched a great breakdown of of uh when time runs out and secret wars somebody did a great it was a comic book breakdown oh i love those but if you watch it it half an hour long that too pretty much tells you exactly what's going to happen in avengers doomsday and secret wars not exactly you can see how it's going to move around but now you have an understanding of what we're in for okay really good look i know i've said this before okay i know but i don't know if it has ever been more applicable than it is right now this movie should start with a three and a half minute luis breakdown and summary of everything from end game up until doomsday it should be luis and paul rudd sitting in a bar somewhere and maybe release it online and not in the you didn't know what they needed to do i would not do that what i would do is bring back the beloved special presentation they could have done a summer special presentation and it's luis breaking down everything but it's got like three minutes but a three minute special presentation because he does it so it wouldn't be like 50 minutes yeah you'd have to be like a yeah shorter one but i would love to see that dude public service announcement i'd no longer able to play kratos now we you guys remember a few weeks ago we talked about a story that had come out that the studio and dave batista had entered into talks about possibly dave taking over the role as kratos well it is reports no longer variety has now reported it's official dave batista officially set as kratos in the god of war series taking over for the injured ryan hurst and all i'm going to say is this you guys remember we took a look at that picture of ryan hurst before he got injured where he took a picture of himself just standing there that was kratos yeah uh dave who has trimmed down a lot has got some work to do to get himself built back up and if anybody can do it dave obviously can anyway the folks over at variety wrote the following dave batista is officially taking up the mantle of the god of war variety has learned that the actor is now set to lead the amazon prime video tv series based on the video game franchise in the role of kratos it was originally reported earlier this month that batista was in talks to play the role after ryan hurst who was announced as kratos in january of 2026 suffered a torn bicep onset that required surgery and would have delayed restarting production well into 2027 it was a minimum a year it was going to be before he could get back into it it was announced shortly thereafter that amazon and sony which is co-producing were recasting the part all right i really have the same sense here and thoughts that i had when word first came out that dave could be taken over the role of kratos and you guys know i have got an absolute soft spot for dave he's been so generous with me and us in our time he was on our uh our uh hurricane typhoon fundraiser with us uh he's like i went to go visit with him on set of one or two of his movies he's an absolute golden guy absolute golden guy so i thought you know what as a replacement for ryan hurst i i don't know you can do a lot better i don't know if you could do a lot better i mean there's that one guy who was a guy from reacher who played paulie on reacher oh yeah who who i don't know i mean he's massive compared to that little kid have you seen his cosplay as kratos because he he goes around cosplaying as kratos and it's like okay yeah that is kratos brought to life but i don't know that he's a good enough actor at this point to lead a television series all that being said um my general thoughts on it though are this i do still wish it was ryan hurst um he just he definitely got the body for it i mean it's all that but more importantly than that while i believe dave has become a significantly better actor than he was when he started out with guardians of the galaxy like he's become a significantly better actor than he was back then i still feel it's not even that close ryan hurst is a better actor i mean you just have to look at ryan's body of work he is a true legit dyed in the wool screen actor and i think he i think he would have been the better guy to play the role because he's just a little bit of a better actor than dave is right now that being said i think dave is a great backup choice i think he will do well for the role but again a lot of the one of the big questions that a lot of people brought up and i think is still a question that's out there even in this picture you can see he's trimmed down a lot of the body of work he's trimmed down a lot of the body of work he's trimmed down a lot of the body of work he's trimmed down a lot of the body of work he's trimmed down a lot of the body of work he's trimmed down a a little bit of a question mark on it's like hey man you've trimmed down a lot can he put back on that because if he wants to get close to the way ryan was looking he's gonna have to put on another 30 he's gonna have to put on 30 and that's not easy for anybody particularly a guy and he's still relatively young yes but a guy the age of dave batista who i can't remember exactly how old he is but he's in his 50s 57 is he 57 yeah double check that i know he's in his 57 he is 57 yeah a guy who's 57 years old it gets harder and harder to do that it can be done and again dave's got the genetics for it but it's going to be really interesting to see you how well he's able to fill out that bodysuit man so but it's good i again i would have still preferred ryan but he got injured i understand dave batista seems just like the logical choice for the next man up to play it and quite frankly i'm not worried about it at all i think he's going to do a very good job playing the role i think we're going to see the next stage in the evolution of dave batista as an actor and again the only question i carry is the one that a lot of people do about can he get back into that physical shape at this point anyway rob it's now official it's it's dave batista he's the guy it's been whispered it's been talked about the reports came out that they were in talks it looks like they got the deal done by the way there was some question about whether they'll just keep the stuff that ryan hurst shot they're not it is official in in the stuff that they're going to keep everything they shot except for ryan hurst scenes they they've decided that they don't want to have a change of actor halfway through the season so they're going to reshoot all of that and i think it's going to be all of ryan hurst's stuff anyway rob how do you feel about dave batista now being our kratos well i i like dave batista and as you've said you know i think he's actually um come a long way as an actor like i don't know if you saw there was some shorts of his character from the beginning from blade runner 2049 and then he was obviously in the beginning of that movie because they recreated a scene that was supposed to be the original blade runner and i thought he did a really great job in those scenes i just put up a picture i don't know if you can see it but what he looked like at 56 with his shirt off he's a pretty impressive looking dude and um i i think that for for for portraying kratos the way he i think he can do a great job if he's well directed you know he's he's the kind of guy that needs james gunn knew exactly how to deploy him and it was great and i think i've seen him in other things where he's a little wooden a little over the top but um what was that what was the movie with jason mamoa wrecking crow i really liked wrecking crew i thought that was really good and uh you know i watched that and i what a what a winning pair those two were so i um i i i think this is a good choice and you know it's not like they're they're they're trading for somebody who's a slouch no i mean here's he has access he has access to the best dietitians and trainers yeah around yeah and he already knows what he's doing yes it's not like he knows how to do it again but you know the older we get the tougher that becomes oh yeah dude yeah somebody's saying what did we all say about heath ledger dave can pull it off dave is not heath ledger all right yeah a lot of people didn't want brokeback mountain boy but like heath ledger had already shown he was an academy level actor i mean listen i'm all for dave i'm excited he's going to be playing the role but let's not go comparing him to academy award-winning actors it's not the same thing it is definitely not the same by the way i think his best performance as seconds from disasters point out was in a not great movie i thought it was okay though it was okay but he was great i think his best performance was in cabin in the woods or not cabin in the woods uh knock knock at the door knock at the door knock at the door knock at a cabin knock knocking somewhere not in the woods that's the book it was based on knocking knock knock is the name of the yeah he was he was great in that he was really great in that i i enjoyed him a lot i do think that was his best uh that was his best performance so far and side note there's not one of us of the three here that don't trust in ronald moore so right i mean that's what it really comes down to right it's this is a show more important than who's playing kratos more important than anything who's actually sitting in the captain's chair with their hands on the controls and running the show it is the greatest showrunner of all time ronald d moore is doing it so until he screws something up which he hasn't uh i'm gonna give it the benefit of the doubt and uh we'll see how it goes anyway guys question is for you what do you think about this it's no longer in talks it's no longer to be seeing both of them both dune 3 and avengers doomsday if the movies are as good as we think they're going to be this is going to be like a lifetime event for us as film this is going to be a lifetime kind of weekend i cannot wait i'm glad you got your tickets man all right robert writes again i think henry would be a great hank mccoy beast or dracula if they ever do blade plus it'd be fun to see him play a scientist the reason i don't like the idea of him playing hank is i i don't want him to be makeup most of the time uh dracula maybe maybe i could yeah maybe i could see him as a villain as dracula i again hank mccoy wouldn't be my first pick though i think i i would i would have about seven or eight but at the end of the day robert is just about putting great actors in roles big important factors if i want to go to a press screening i gotta drive minimum 45 minutes any depending on where the press screening is i gotta drive either 45 minutes all the way up to an hour and a half to go to the theaters that they generally there's four or five theaters in la that they generally do their press screenings at and the closest one to me is about 45 minutes the worst one which is the amc century city great theater by the way great theater but the amc century city is like for me about an hour and a half to get to so i could go see a press screening of it two or three days before the movie opens and drive two hours round trip or i can wait two or three days and drive five minutes to go watch it at the amc tyler galleria here in riverside seems like an easy decision to me the second thing was when i realized this i get no benefit from going to press screenings none i realized that my out of theater review and my reviews were getting the same exact numbers if i put them out the day the movie came out or whether i put it out two or three days before the movie came out whenever the review embargo lifted there was no difference there was literally no difference so if i gotta drive two hours to go to a press screening and i get no benefit for it what's the point what's the point now i am also in a much better position a lot of those people who go to these press screenings they work for people and they have bosses that want them to go to press screenings i don't have a boss i am my own boss i work for me so i don't have anybody i have to answer to um so yeah there's zero benefit to getting it now look don't get me wrong if i could get a press screening three months before a movie came out yeah i'd probably do most of these press screenings happen anywhere from two days before the movie comes out to five or six days before the movie comes out and even then the review embargoes don't usually lift until anywhere from one day before the movie comes out to three or four days before the movie comes out so what's the point what's the point the fact that i like being able to look at anybody like any fucking moron who comes and says you just said you like a movie because you want access i love being able to say boy you're really stupid aren't you i gave up all access like four years ago i don't go to anything i love being able to say that i i'm not gonna I love being able to say that. But but really the main thing for me for not going to any of the press stuff again it's three things it's that one thing about access but the other two are equally as important if not more important amplifies it is the movie emotional watching it that full house amplified so yeah absolutely 100 and the good audience absolutely has an impact on your experience with the movie hundred percent it does all right the refugine writes one of two what's really for frustrating about these imax 70 millimeter texas tickets is a lot of them are being bought up by scalpers yes which somewhat creates a false picture of how fast they are selling out it doesn't though see here's the thing it would be if scalpers are buying them and they're not getting sold the problem is like we saw with dune 3 scalpers buy them and start selling them for 20 2500 a pair that's fine but then you see that people are actually buying them for 2500 a pair so it it doesn't actually create if there was no demand people who think there's going to be a crash soon because the ai bubble and everything right so i wanted to not just look at what's my potential gain i wanted to look at what's my potential gain i wanted to look at what happens to this proposed portfolio i have if the scenario of a sudden 30 s&p 500 crash happens and i wanted to look very carefully what would happen to this etf and what would happen to this stock and what would be expected to happen to this stock some would only drop 10 some would drop a full 30 some would only drop two or three percent i tell you all of that to say make If there's one thing that frustrates me is I am a huge advocate for documentaries and Hollywood feels to need. Most people don't watch documentaries as somebody who has made a number of documentaries that sucks. But the fact is. You're not going to get many people going to a movie theater to see a documentary. That that's, that's just true. I go to box office, Mojo, bring up the top 100 grossing films of all time. Tell me how many documentaries are on that list. I'll save you the time. None. There are none documentaries on the list. That is not me. Disparaging. I've made several documentaries. I'm looking at possibly doing another one with a team of people. I love documentaries, but the reality is no one's going to go see that movie. No one's going to go see an Anthony Bourdain documentary about 20 to 30 times. The amount of people may go to see this narrative version of it. Like, and I don't think that's an exaggeration. Say 10 to 20 times. As many would be going to see it. So you got to keep that in consideration to rich. Sometimes principle has to give way to some, some stuff that is just more practical. And the reality is way more people, no matter how little movie money, this movie makes it the theaters, way more people are going to go see it than if they had put out a documentary about it. open okay so if i go to my amc yeah look you get four reservation spots four reservation spots when you have a c a list which is normally plenty but for the next four months i've got three of my four spots taken i've only got one empty spot on my amc reservation list that i can use between now and december i mean it opens back up again once i go see the movie but i mean i've got one slot to play and tax incentives um well you don't put it to streaming like if you're warner brothers you don't put it to streaming because then you don't make a single dollar off of it and you're not allowed to take it as a tax loss right if and remember it wasn't this ownership of warner brother it wasn't the current ownership of warner brothers that greenlit the movie so you have to do make a business decision then do we come out further ahead financially if we just drop it on streaming or do we come out more financially ahead if we just shelve the project and write it as a complete loss and then you have to make the right business decision and for warner brothers the right business decision was to shelve it and every other studio agreed with them because when warner brothers said hey anybody want to buy it all you have to pay us is what we paid to produce it not a dollar more every single studio passed they all passed because none of them believed it was going to make any money so yeah putting it on streaming would have lost them more money than just taking it as a loss now as it turns out ketchup was willing to step up and pay for it and unfortunately and i'm glad they did and i can't wait to watch the movie but unfortunately they're going to be the ones to suffer the financial losses for it now all right luis writes i lost my grandma today oh i'm so sorry any advice on grieving listen i um i lost both of my italian like i i lost both of my mom's parents um years like years and years ago but i still had my italian grandparents still my my nonna and my nonna and uh my grandfather passed away just a couple just a couple years ago and then my grandmother my nonna passed away uh not too long ago and you know i'm i'm the wrong guy to ask i'm too emotionally stunted to really give you good advice except to say that it's um it it doesn't go away like it doesn't go away you just learn to live with it and you learn to make that a part of who you are and you learn to deal with it but i mean i'd like to sit here and tell you that the pain of it goes away it doesn't go away it doesn't go away it doesn't but uh eventually you learn how to make that that loss becomes a part of the fabric of who you are and you learn to live with that and you learn to manage it but it like for me who i'm not qualified to give an answer to that it just it doesn't really ever go away per se all right sin vendetta writes went on the amc app to buy my coyote versus acme tickets and saw that there is an early screening for it this sunday really so i'm taking my mom and i this sunday to see can't wait i'll report back monday i had no knowledge of this if this is true i'm gonna go see it on sunday this movie looks hilarious to me like i think it's gonna completely flop but i can't in standard format one dolby one limax one colossus well here's the problem with that is that's extremely expensive extremely expensive and then it just redefines what regular screens are it's like what the villain in incredible said once everybody's special no one is so if like okay link you turn every theater into a well then none of the theaters are special then something else has to be the special one right but look the bottom line is i was working with amc theaters when they started installing their prime theaters and those were expensive as hell they're so expensive to put in so expensive to put in and i'm not gonna lie i'm not gonna lie i'm not gonna lie i'm not gonna have to put in so no i i don't think you just replace all of your screens with that because that's not simply not financially viable uh but i would like to see an expansion of them and i think they are working at expanding it out snoop i think they're they're working on expanding that out all right uh last question of the day writes uh will glowing reviews for coyote versus acme cause reputational damage among filmmakers and filmmakers working with warner brothers even if not profitable it sends a bad message no it doesn't look filmmakers who aren't children understand that it's also a business a lot of money goes into making these things and a lot of money goes into making these studios run it does warner brothers no good if a movie is great but loses them 40 million dollars it does not matter it doesn't matter to your bank account if your 40 million dollar loss was a great movie or if your 40 million dollar loss was a piece of crap it doesn't matter every like it's it's just funny to me it's it's funny to me how everybody thinks other people's money is not an issue other people's money is not an issue uh but everything in our lives money is absolutely important and money is absolutely foundational things that helps us make our decisions especially if you're a business you're a business and if you do a calculation you realize hey if we put this movie out we're going to lose this amount of money if we don't put the movie out we lose less than half of that well then you're you are first grade moron if you don't take the thing that will cut your losses in half of course you do and any filmmaker who is not a sniveling little child understands the financial realities of that they understand their financial realities that it doesn't mean it doesn't suck and it doesn't mean that it's not unfortunate but it is part of the reality right it's the movie business you you can't just lose money on what a principle well we're just going to put this out because and we're going to lose an extra 30 million dollars just because like that that's not how serious people think that's not how adults think it's a business and you have to do things that are good for business now under the best of circumstances great art equals great business right obsession is a great example of that sinners is a great example of that the odyssey is a great example of that and on and on and on but it doesn't always work right every once in a while you'll get amazing movie that is fantastic but for one reason or another nobody goes to see it and it costs a fortune at the end of the day no matter how good or bad coyote versus acme is and from everything i understand it's really good and i'm excited to see it but the reality is if it tanks as hard as i think it's gonna tank and i hope i'm wrong but if it tanks as hard as i think it's gonna tank then warner brothers becomes absolutely justified in their decision 100 and nobody's gonna look twice at them about whether or not they want to work with them every filmmaker is going to line up to work with them they always will it just is what it is anyway cannot wait to see the movie though i've heard it's fantastic i can't wait to watch it but the unfortunate reality is we're not going to have any problems getting tickets it's going to be pretty easy to get tickets because there's not going to be a lot sold and what i hear here's the best case scenario i hope when it opens and we all go see it that the word of mouth is so good it creates a secondary push for it that's the best case scenario and i hope that happens but i'm not expecting it to happen we'll see anyway guys that will do it for today's installment of the john
