Giddy Up Full Show (30/09/26)

This episode of Giddy Up with Gareth Hall covers major developments in Australian racing. The National Tote is set to launch this weekend, with Tabcorp CEO Gil McLaughlin explaining it will unify betting pools across states, offering deeper liquidity and reduced takeout rates for win and place bets. While acknowledging challenges like short-priced favorites in World Pool races, McLaughlin emphasized ongoing reviews and future international commingling possibilities. Racing Victoria's Paul Bloodworth provided an update on seven international horses that arrived for the spring carnival, with three likely for the Caulfield Cup, though no Cox Plate contender emerged due to global competition. He discussed potential bonuses to attract top internationals. The show also addressed the 12-month disqualification of trainers Grant and Alana Williams over a prohibited substance case, which they are appealing. The Turnbull Stakes was highlighted as a pivotal meeting, with weather conditions likely to affect track ratings. Trainer Kelvin shared insights on his stable's prospects, including Half Yours and Natural Flung, while the panel debated the merits of Mr Brightside's future and the impact of the AFL Grand Final on racing schedules.

Speaker 3hello to you calvin mcavoy morning gareth congratulations on the
Speaker 2weekend yeah i appreciate that it was a great weekend for pride of jenny hello to you troy causton's hey g how are you good yeah it was a great weekend it was a great game wasn't it it was it's one of the best yeah and that's coming from a man who doesn't even like at all i know it was uh i
Speaker 4found it um astonishing i just sat there and could not
Speaker 2leave my seat it was unreal it was live sport at its very best yeah really good did you enjoy the
Speaker 4sunday group one meeting at caulfield um i usually so i go away every um grand final weekend i've got a group of friends there's 30 of us that go up to my farm and um unfortunately will had to go to uh up to brisbane for for something so i had to go to this meeting and i found it quite good actually i i um i don't usually go on the sunday on grand final weekend but i found it quite a good meeting
Speaker 2i think friday night still works better than the the sunday afternoon 100
Speaker 4bring that bring that back any day of the week but as long as as long as it's at mooney valley i think it's back next
Speaker 2year i think we're back yeah
Speaker 4they i think they're due to start racing in september next year so i'd say that this meeting will be back it'll be
Speaker 2its first test i reckon yeah
Speaker 4of course yeah
Speaker 3um calvin did you enjoy the sunday uh i did yeah i did i thought it was um yeah i thought it wasn't too bad gareth didn't have a winner but i would have enjoyed it more if we had a winner two horses ran very well but uh they looked to get not a bad crowd for a sunday kieran enjoyed it i think yeah
Speaker 2what a what a day from kiramar like five winners two of his big like best horses i reckon that he's ever put a bridle on in pride of jenny and and also jimmy star were able to make um some like it's outstanding is that she's just a freak like um or do you think there's going to be more nine-year-old mares that have been able to race later on in their careers there should be as long
Speaker 4as they're sound and and right like we do rush them off to the breeding barn very quickly in in our caper because there's so much money attached to doing so and i suppose it takes a mare like jenny to really bring that prize money in to to stop a breeder from going to the barn
Speaker 3i think she's a freak yeah and i've heard jack and and kieran talk about it like she's made she she defies what you're meant to do as a trainer and and you know continually they think that she's you know when she when they don't think she's at her best she comes out and wins when you know she just continues to um do pretty crazy things and uh i thought on saturday like she was never she wasn't under pressure as early as she normally is so she was just going to that flying and obviously was very impressive
Speaker 2yeah it's interesting like bray he he tells me all of the work that he does with her before she gets to kirramars like she goes to a farm where they look after her and they go over her and they treat her um so she is like a full-time athlete in a way yeah well
Speaker 4that's the majority of good horses are nowadays
Speaker 2yeah and so you like it's a pre-season that the train is like he he basically gets her ready to send it to kieran at the end of the day
Speaker 3those um those really good horses uh you know we see it all the time the ones that are competing in the spring autumn even winter in queensland you don't get a lot of time off so you need to have a sound horse which she obviously is she's obviously made of concrete um but you know they basically are always in training they might only get a couple of weeks and i think another thing is you don't really want your good horses going out and getting really fat and you know getting out of shape because it takes you a long time to get him back in yeah i think that yeah
Speaker 2i think the afl plays in our old plays these days they don't really have seasons like they have a they have maybe two weeks off after the end of the season and then they've they're given a program to make sure they're ready to come back um for pre-season because if they don't do that work leading into pre-season there's a strong chance that they would get injured again so the world's changed sports science has changed and it's not just the human athlete it's the equine athletes as well
Speaker 4horse trainers have changed like in that way as well like i'm not into big spells anymore and and and i base my thoughts and my training on exactly what you're talking about yeah you don't see an afl player just not doing even in his two weeks off he's going to go for a run or do something just keep himself active and i think that's the key with young horses as well short spells let them get over and if they've got an injury and stuff like that obviously it's very different but i think gone are the days where you just tip a horse out for three months and just give it time off uh they just turn into into
Speaker 2jubble take us inside the inner sanctum of lindsey park mr brightside he was down the track there and he's third run back this preparation and a fan obviously social media can be a positive it can be a negative and everyone's got their different opinions they should retire him they should race on um and there's a lot of people that probably don't know the horse that are having opinions your thoughts on what like take like from a trainer's perspective do you just shut that off well yeah you've got to i mean
Speaker 3because then you've got owners having opinions as well because they're listening to different people of course but that's what the territory that comes with having a 10-time group one winning horse like he two starts ago he ran second in the mems he went enormous he then ran on a on a firm track which he didn't like and they came out and said that and then on saturday although the track wasn't rock hard we've seen it time and time again prior to jenny brings horses undone and once again he was there taking the field up um the pressure was on early and and it didn't suit the horse and he obviously ran below everyone's expectations but um yeah i think it's probably a bit premature to be if the horse is sounding well uh and the boys will make the right call um but i'd love to see him freshen into the the champion's mile on the last day i reckon that'd be his go
Speaker 4troy i reckon oh
Speaker 3that's warfie time i reckon
Speaker 4it's warfie time for mr b okay i think it's warfie time so i love it he either needs to um step up or stand out yeah the boys are going to make the right decision and very interesting i i was told this week what warfie time is going to be and i'm i'm where it actually came from because i didn't understand it yes um and it turns out that in freemantle a good friend of mine from from freo told me that when the painters and dockers were working at the docks in freemantle they'd play that or whatever or say it's warfie time and then they'd get the rest of the day off with full pay okay there you go so when it goes to the dockers they took the rest of the day yeah yeah 100
Speaker 2usually it's worked okay but the last four minutes was extraordinary stuff the brisbane lions um they rallied and and and were able to pull off one of the greatest ever victories in grand final history but so mr brightside so from a trainer's perspective like it's a difficult one you want to look after the horse's legacy yeah um you don't want to see him finish down the track but he's still enjoying racing he's uh he's a gouty yeah um it's a fine line and it's a long time in the paddock like
Speaker 4don't forget and he's he's going to get looked after for the rest of the day his life because that's what we do and but he's going to be around for another you know 20 years
Speaker 3probably and he might have just looked after himself a little bit like they they do that gelding's to it and he's bloody nine years old and yeah he started looking after himself and he's not letting go a lot of them are doing it three and four um you know he might have protected himself a little bit when it got tough and and uh but look the horse looks incredibly well like compared to when he ran second in the mems he first up yeah um when he was a bit woolly and wintry to how he um he looks he looks incredibly good so they'll make the call and whatever they whatever call they'll make those there's three big opinions there and yeah i'm sure they'll go back and
Speaker 4forth you've got to at least have another run like if you get um If you get a rain-affected track. Look what's happening this weekend.
Speaker 3He would have loved to have been there this weekend.
Speaker 2Yeah, that's what I mean. It's sort of, you've got to look at the weather and you've got to make sure that you get to that track that he wants. And unfortunately, you might go through a whole spring and there's not another soft track there. But that's okay.
Speaker 4The boys just have to make that decision because the last thing that they can do now is probably run him on a flint-hard track again and get that result because everyone will be calling. Yeah. What do you think, Gareth?
Speaker 2Well, I just think that you just let Lindsay Park do what they need to do with that horse because even with the Pride of Jenny people, yeah, you've got to retire her. It's unfair. They don't know the horses. Pride of Jenny might just love racing. She doesn't want to be a mum. And the thing that I love about people in racing and especially the racing fans that don't work with horses, oh, the horse doesn't want to, like, the horses can't talk. No one knows if they want to race or not. But they can show you, I would imagine, at home if they're enjoying their work. And they're lapping it up. And my experience with horse racing and having horses is that they would far, they would prefer to be in work than not in work.
Speaker 3Yeah, for sure. And I think, like, no trainer that's got a horse like that horse has put them. On the map. He was there, has been their banner horse for five years or something. And, you know, we've all got horses that are special to us. I mean, Troy had Barrick Hill recently. The last thing you want to do is have the horse disappointing yourself and everyone else. So I'd say they're going to bed at night thinking about the horse. They're waking up thinking about the horse. And there's a lot that weighs on the trainer and in trying to make the right call.
Speaker 2He's been the perfect horse to kick off their trading career. He came along at just the right time.
Speaker 3Just after another trainer knocked back buying him first. Yeah, yeah. Did you? My father. Tell us that story there, Kelvin. He got called. I think Matt Tillett, who was working for us, got a phone call. Nice bull bars for sale. I think it was about 150, 160 grand. And, um, and yeah, we just didn't do it. Just couldn't thought it was a bit too much money for a bull bars. Yeah. And, uh, it was knocked back and there you go. That was Mr. Brightside. So that's the game we play one door shuts, another one slams in the face.
Speaker 2The old man, obviously learn after you said, I've got a St. Jane for you.
Speaker 3Look, I probably would have made the same call, you know, like we were finding horses difficult, difficult to shift. And, um, who would have known back then? Have you asked Lindsay Park while I took it? Uh, they had bigger bank. Yeah. I think, I think they, they just, I mean, they had to, I actually don't know. I think David Hayes, was it David Hayes that liked the trial? I'll have to check that.
Speaker 4Yeah. I'm not sure either, but I know that he, he came at a perfect time for the boys. If you remember though, yeah, sort of David had left and, um, Tom, Tom had left, Tom went down the water bowl and the. And you know, there was a real sort of question mark and he came along at the perfect time and the boys showed what true champions they are, I think with, uh, alongside Mr.
Speaker 2Brighton. I think he's nearly the most, I know they've had some champions at Lindsay Park, but even in Colin and David's time, but especially David, I think he's nearly the most important horse that. Better loosen up. Well, I think, I think so, he came, he came along. Um, when David took over from Colin, but I think, um, I think Colin was around when David took over where David went to Hong Kong, COVID came and the boys just sort of like left out to swim in a way. Um, and this horse came along and it took him a while to win his first group one. He was like close up in that, uh, the Cantala and that final day of that carnival where
Speaker 3he got beat at, uh, Ballarat in a maiden, I reckon.
Speaker 2Yeah. Or Bendigo or Ballarat, I backed him that day. Never backed him again. Yeah, that's life, but what a horse he's been and you know what, he'll go out when they think he's, he's ready to go out. I think Rob Heathcote, um, um, did it beautifully with Rothfire. Like he would always say, even when he won that Doombin 10,000, that the horse will tell me, I know, I know him back the front. He'll tell me when he's, he's had enough. Um, so I hope he runs a big race and he wins.
Speaker 4Hopefully, um, hopefully Mr. Brightside gets a spot out at Living Legends. Cause, uh, geez, he'll put some bums on seats out there, won't he?
Speaker 3They've got a pretty nice farm themselves.
Speaker 4I know, I know, but it'd be nice for the public to be able to go and see.
Speaker 3If I was the Hayes boys, I'd rather look at him myself every day. You are a bloody selfie.
Speaker 2Yeah, well, you can probably come there maybe every three months or so. Then go back to Lindsay Park. Um, 14 minutes past that. We're going to take our first break here on the Wednesday, Jen.
Speaker 1Join the conversation, text us on 0 4 double 9 7 3 6 7 3 6 live across Australia. This is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 2Welcome back to Giddy Up. This is Giddy Up on a Wednesday on the Wednesday agenda, 17 minutes past state. The national totes not far away. So looking forward to catching up with Gil McLaughlin, the CEO of Tabcorp. He will join me straight after nine o'clock. Hi, Gene team. Given see what I see is history of hip fractures in 2024. Do you think racing Victoria needs much stricter pre-race vet checks for horses returning from major bone injuries? Unfortunately, it was tragic that we lost see what I see there on Sunday afternoon. Um, but racing Victoria and the way that they go about their, their pre-race vet checks, especially with horses that have had injuries. Um, in previous times I've had horses that, you know, um, that you, that they get, um, triple checked over when they head to the races.
Speaker 4Second to none, our, uh, racing Victoria vets and the protocols when it comes to horses returning from injury. So, and I'm not saying you don't know what you're talking about, but, um, they, they are so stringent when you have a horse returning from injury, there's checks upon checks upon checks.
Speaker 3And you're talking about a trainer that's a Melbourne Cup, Corfew Cup, Cox player. There's no way in the world he would
Speaker 4risk, um, that horse if he knew what was going to happen.
Speaker 2Morning boys. Hope all is well. Just wondering, Gareth, is Birdman now being set for the might and power next week or still a chance to go to the Turnbull this week? Well, he's most likely to go to the might and power because it's weight for age and not set weights and penalties. And he's a recent group one winner. Plus I don't think he enjoys the wet that much.
Speaker 3So just looking at progressive acceptances for the Turnbull as we speak, 12 current acceptors. Seven, Chris Waller and Birdman is in there currently.
Speaker 4Kieran Maher hasn't accepted yet though? No, he's not.
Speaker 3No. I can see. They're accepting late.
Speaker 4Seven of 12, Mr.
Speaker 2Waller. So, but as we saw in the Maccabi Diva, Ozzie and Chris Waller, aren't frightened to take that clip there for the, the, the scratching fee to make sure that they give their horses the best opportunity to perform, um, at the, in the most suitable race. Like he explained why they did that with Birdman the other day. Um, and they wanted to leave it to the last minute, mainly because of the weather. They want to make sure that their horses are racing on the surface that they want them to race on. So they scratched race day morning, I reckon Birdman and, um, Buckaroo and save them for the, the Underwood stakes. And in the end, it worked pretty well for Birdman. So the weather this weekend is atrocious change.
Speaker 3I'm just looking now tomorrow, 10 to 25 mil Friday, nine to 30 Saturday, three to 15, all at Flemington.
Speaker 2So they might not race if that happens, half yours is just
Speaker 3there looking at probably be a soft six with the way it
Speaker 2drains, just explain moving day for us, boys. We hear this a lot. And I reckon there's been a few Saturdays that could really put their hand up to say, well, I am moving day, but it's been a tradition racing that the Turnbull stakes meeting has always been moving day Troy.
Speaker 4Yeah. Well, and what we are coming into is the big day. So we're coming into the Caulfield carnival, the, the Guinea's and the Caulfield cup, they were coming into Cox plate day, and then we're coming into the. The Flemington week, and I suppose it's the day this coming Saturday where we find out who's going to stick their hand up and, um, perform or who's going to be a pretender. So it, it really, I think Saturday is moving day.
Speaker 2Yeah. Um, are you nervous, Calvin? No. What for about half yours? You've, you've, um, he's stuck up for the room. Yeah. Like you think he's a wait for age horse. I do. Um, he gets his chance in a Turnbull stakes to prove you right. And then you make that decision. Whether you go to a Caulfield cup and a Cox plate.
Speaker 3I'll tell you why it's moving day. It's, uh, you've got the first two year old race of the year here in Victoria, which is exciting. You've got the Dane here, which is setting the picture for a cool more. It's basically a mini cool more superimposed stakes. He's got all the, the Derby and Oaks hopefuls, obviously the Edward manifolds leading into a thousand Guinea's. Uh, and then you've got the Turnbull and you've got the horses that will be choosing Cox plate or Caulfield cup. So I think that's why it is.
Speaker 2So dearly, it's a two 50 Ali on a $3 bird. Birdman full 50 cosmic crusader at nine. Um, Buckaroo at 11 half yours at $13. He's a big price. Your boy, if it's a heavy track.
Speaker 3Yeah, he's a, he's a big price. Um, he is a big price and yeah, I think the rain comes, it's exactly what he's going to be looking for. And hopefully he can draw a barrier, which he hasn't had since Melbourne cup day and, um, won't have to be too far back.
Speaker 2Hopefully he's been, he's obviously he's the Melbourne cup champ. So everybody wants to talk about him, but, um, do you find yourself under? A bit of extra pressure with him because, um, he's the, the Melbourne cup champ and everyone thinks that, well, um, or everyone hopes that he can win another race or is it just a situation where anything now that he does is a bonus and the pressure is off after you've become a Caulfield Melbourne cup champ?
Speaker 3Uh, no, look, the pressure's not off. Um, um, I mean, I think it's a bit like Mr. Bright side. This is the territory you have when you've got a great horse and, um, you know, I'm not comparing them, you know, half yours is one, two group ones, but he's one. Two significant races. Um, I think I looked up gold trip who won the Turnbull. uh went past
Speaker 2romantic warrior he did now
Speaker 3he went through after winning the melbourne cup the season before he went through a sort of autumn winter campaign didn't win a race and then he came back and then he won the turnbull so um i do think and i've spoken to a lot of trainers that have won melbourne cups or people that have been involved in horses that won a melbourne cup it's a very taxing race and taxing preparation that sometimes their next prep they don't bounce and um you know our horse although i do believe he should have won the q22 not that we want to ramble on about that anymore he sort of wasn't looking like he looks at the moment like his coat's back shining like it was last spring and i'm excited i think the horse is going well and i think you know why why can't i be bullish about it a really nice you
Speaker 2should be and rule supremacy and pounding frank that form now on saturday i reckon yeah for sure this is a good question just explain the difference between weight for age and set weights and penalties
Speaker 4you so weight for age is the scale yeah um on their age and their sex and that's that determines the weight they get set weights and
Speaker 2penalties the boys get 59 the girls get uh four year old and over yeah yeah and then as you're younger
Speaker 4the younger horses get a weight relief yeah set weights and penalties goes on how many good races group races group one races that you've won uh so everybody gets the set weight and then whatever you've done on top of that you get extra normally in the last
Speaker 312 months yeah it's a 12 months yeah so that's why horses that have been really good horses previously they even group one winners maybe two or three years ago they get protected a little bit in the set weights and penalties and horses that are in form although they mightn't have won uh their rating might be lower but if they've won a group three in their last 12 months they cop a a couple of kilos or they win a group two that's how it works so i
Speaker 2asked that question because the turnbull stakes form ones can be a little bit misleading and not misleading in a way but i think the perfect example is romantic warrior and um when he competed in the turnbull stakes then it's easier for him to go back to wait for age
Speaker 4yeah we came out and um won the cox play didn't yeah yeah yeah that's a good case in point um so
Speaker 2so dilly's 250s he's the horse is he the horse to beat still calvin or do you think he's vulnerable after his first up effort because he was a real it was a bit
Speaker 3of a handful in the mounting yard uh no i mean i think he's probably the horse to beat i saw him yesterday he looks incredible incredibly well he was on the bounce and even willow sort of mentioned that he's nice and fresh and i listened to gay waterhouse's interview following her piece of work and she mentioned that she worked him over five which um you know i think he's probably shorter of of a working gallop uh distance than what she normally would have so maybe she feels like they put a lot of work into the horse getting him ready first up at a mile and now um she wanted to just take the take the pressure off a little bit freshen him up into this race but i'm looking at the turnbull last uh yeah i mean it's a it's a it's a it's a who won it last year via sustainer um
Speaker 2turnbull stakes she might have won it last year i know she got i'll have to double check that um anyway good race no so delius won it last oh he did too but it
Speaker 3was a good the format of that
Speaker 2race was fantastic i remember it always been a great form race and that's the the path that chris waller's always followed with his superstars who are you tipping gareth um i'll have to wait for the weather you'll be cosmic crusader no doubt no i don't think so i don't think so i think he might beat half yours home cosmic crusader i think sir delius is an interesting runner because just take us through um and you just pointed out that i thought that was fascinating to see the gay waterhouse yesterday short sharp work like fartlek training in a way for for sir delius um yeah do you change it up
Speaker 3like much mid preparation with your horses oh no doubt i think all trainers do but i think there's a difference in when you're building up um early first two runs to when you're sort of maintaining but um i think there was a lot of intent shown and this is me completely talking from what i've watched on the trials there was a lot of intent from gain adrian with those three strong trials um to have him ready for the mile first up and um you know he ran okay with not a lot of luck but he didn't he wasn't dazzling was he so maybe they think that having him right on the bounce up to 2000 now they think that a little bit fresher a little bit fresher might be what suits him and so do you change your horse's work
Speaker 4once once they're up and racing yeah 100 like once you've got them up and got them fit it's then maintaining them and keeping them happy yeah you don't need a lot of hard work unless you've got a big gross horse yeah you don't need a lot of hard work between races you've really got to uh just keep it nice and balanced i guess
Speaker 2with those stones they might be different to train to the gowling so you've got to keep them interested yeah a little bit yeah exactly that short sharp work
Speaker 4could probably switch him on for
Speaker 2saturday yeah um how would you train half course without giving too much away
Speaker 3look he's quite forward and um i think his weight's where it needs to be so yesterday morning he galloped uh on the course proper same as uh sedilius but he worked over a mile and uh it was very much just last two and 25. he didn't need to do too much I thought um he had a stronger gout seven days before that and um he's got a he's a lean um naturally fit horse with great lungs so second up 2000 is exactly what he needs but it's very different to to other stays that we've trained previously that needed to the work port into them
Speaker 2you know is there one particular horse throughout your careers that you change the way that you train them and then all of a sudden they jumped out of the ground and improved out of sight
Speaker 3well i'd have to yeah i think there's been horses that you've um you've actually just not galloped you know like once they're up in racing yeah just don't gallop them between runs and that seems to be how they've you know been better and there's horses I can't you know name a horse off the top of my head but they might need galloping two or three times a week to keep them stimulated so you know we're dealing with animals that have brains and they're all different there's probably no different to how you coach footy close
Speaker 2and that's why you see sometimes horses do improve when they change the environment in a way that's why every other trainer's got um farms like you these days yeah exactly
Speaker 3I think there's a lot like horses changing trainer and and say improving and I say improving with my um I I think most of the time that is just a fresher Outlook in a new environment Lucy yeomans
Speaker 4has done a magnificent job you know is Lucy a better trainer than Chris Waller because Chris Waller had um that made you can't say that but different um different environment different way of training and she's done an unbelievable job yeah and it's a good story isn't
Speaker 2it to get a horse off Chris Waller and to have the success that she's been able to have with changing colors and then to win a group too and she'll get her opportunity now changing colors to try to make on pride of Jenny in a Empire Rose on that first day of that carnival but um that's the horse that you need to kick off your career basically because she's going to get so many I would imagine anyway opportunities to train for people like um Bray and Ozzie Kerr that's going to share in that
Speaker 4horse she's going to but she still needs to get results because you know those owners want results but she's she's a hard worker and um she deserves everybody she's come through
Speaker 3the Kiramar school and had a relationship with a lot of those owners like knowing them and you know she was she was right up in the in the forefront of you know Kieran's team and um that mayor in particular of hers she's just probably the sort of mayor you need to take on prior to Jenny because she was right back switched off and um coming down the outside it was interesting talking to Ozzie
Speaker 2this time last week for beyond the barriers and there was a like I won't mention their names but a few um of our younger trainers texting in like ask Ozzie how you get opportunities to get horses and I was really interested to hear his answer for that question he said well um it's difficult for me to give you a horse if you're untried in a way but if you've got a really good horse that you think's got ability give me a call um get me in and then if you do the job away we go like it's
Speaker 4too that goes twofold as well though because yeah younger trainers have probably got owners that they and and oh sorry I'm talking from me so yeah if I've got a really good horse do I go to Shane Morrissey and Rupert Leah that have supported me for the last 20 years or or do I say here's here's one for you Ozzie because you know you want a fine line it's a very fine line do I want Ozzie in my stable 100 I do and I've had him in once with the Titan blinders yeah um but do you do you know you if you know you've got that good horse do you go to a new person or do you go to people that have been really loyal to you yeah it's such a hard thing to do yeah it's a hard thing to do yeah I'm sure it's a hard hard place to be yeah
Speaker 2well it's a business decision at the end of the day isn't it like um yeah you've got to try and attract these type of owners into your stable and then what do you need to sacrifice um and first of all you probably need a good horse but that's that's the game it's 8 31 I'm going to take a break this is the Wednesday agenda all thanks to bet 365.
Speaker 1join conversation text us on 0 4 9 7 3 6 7 3 6 live across Australia this is giddy up with Gareth Hall
Speaker 2welcome back to giddy up what did we learn from the three-year-olds you reckon last week in the Golden Rose obviously all woven raided through the roof but he did have gate number one he was given the perfect ride by Rachel King and depending on what ratings expert that you talk to like if he does that he'll win the Caulfield guineas and he'll be competitive in a Cox plates I'll take him on and I I've got a I don't know you can from a trainer's perspective um I reckon that there's probably more upside in trombone that there is in war woven even though he was beaten by four or five lengths and trombone
Speaker 4was first up, wasn't he? No, he was second up. Was he second up?
Speaker 2Yeah, but like, I think that they, the way that Waller trains, he was ready to go for a, the Caulfield Guineas is his race.
Speaker 3Yeah. Yeah, I believe, I agree with that. Gee whiz, he was impressive, the winner. He was impressive, wasn't he? Yeah, I thought he was.
Speaker 4Yeah, he was like, if you believe what you see. So what makes you think that he can't come down and win a guinea?
Speaker 2Well, I just said, no, I'm like, I think that like when you peak like that and he went like he did, can he do it again? Of course he can.
Speaker 3Yeah. Of course he can. And did I read St. Gothard's now going to the Coolmore? Straight to the Coolmore, yeah.
Speaker 2It was interesting. Guest house? Guest house, he goes straight to the Everest. Yeah, okay. What'd you make of that bumping jewel?
Speaker 3And what does that do to a horse? Look, it's not ideal, but I mean, we're talking about a big, gross cult. I mean, you know, they go one of two ways. Either. A big, gross cult cops a bump like that. Loves it. And they spit it out and don't want any part of it, or they grit their teeth and go on. So I don't know the horse, but I don't know if it was enough of an excuse just to blame the bump. He was beating, what, nearly six, was he?
Speaker 2Yeah. Yeah. Maybe he doesn't get 1,400 metres. Maybe he's a sprinter.
Speaker 4Yeah, hopefully that's the case because he's going to need to be on his A grade for the Everest, isn't he?
Speaker 2You see the Blue Door is into the Everest. So you would have got off, as I would imagine, if Blue Door's getting into an Everest, you would have had offers with Natural Fling?
Speaker 3Yeah, there was quite a bit of interest, even pre-Moya and post-Moya. We elected to, look, I think if she'd won the Moya, definitely we would have probably done it, but we felt that she can run an Everest next year. Okay. Was that a difficult decision? Not really. Not really. I mean, it's very hard, isn't it, to go up there and take on Kying Rise.
Speaker 4Three-year-old fillies as well.
Speaker 3Attempted did it last, ran second last year. She was probably up there, wasn't she? Or did she come from down here? No, Attempted was up there. Yeah, she was up there. And our view has always been the cool one. I feel, I know you can do it, but we just thought, I love the idea of the Dane Hill, give her a look down the straight and go there.
Speaker 2Is the theory right that if you're running to Kying Rising as a young horse and he does belt you up and run some times that we expect him to run, that it does break your heart going forward? It didn't hurt Attempted. Yeah, I was about to say, it didn't break Attempted's heart. No, 100%. So. Yes and no. That's a myth. Yeah, I reckon it's a myth. That's a myth. Yeah, I think it's a myth.
Speaker 3Yeah. I mean, I think we're not in the game of running second. We're in the game of trying to win and I don't think any horse can beat Kying Rising.
Speaker 2So. So you can't put your horse into the deep end too quickly then? Or you can't? Like is it, like playing an 18-year-old kid in the seniors when he's not quite ready? Two-year-olds and three-year-olds, we do it all the time.
Speaker 4Yeah. So, and you've just got to find that stuff out. But I think it's different when you're talking about, like Calvin can tell you, a natural fling in the moyer.
Speaker 3She would start four in the moyer.
Speaker 4Yeah. Yeah. That's, that's probably, that's probably more of a question mark than anything. But I think she, she held it in.
Speaker 2If they've got the ability, they'll stand up. I think Esha, I think Shay Nicholls last year, she was very quick and then she's been moved to, to Queensland. Maybe she just wasn't up to it anyway.
Speaker 3Yeah. Maybe she was just sharp and early. I don't, I don't think she'd won a stakes race leading into the moyer either, but natural fling, you know, she's not a small finicky little filly. Like she's, she's a home affairs, built big and strong and we thought she'd handle it and she did. So looking forward to Saturday.
Speaker 2That downhill's a beauty. Natural fling the next episode, overexcited and boobay, big sky pocket full of cash. Who's your biggest danger?
Speaker 3Castillo King. Uh, I, I, it's a great race. I'm very confused about the next episode and you just can't discount Zara and Mar and I just, they trialed him quiet and you know, the camp is very confident. I thought Reece Goodwin's horse trialed very, very well. It's got to go from, it's got to step right up and I think Sam Freedman. His horse is a really nice horse, overexcited. So you're going to be, I think there'll be some really nice horses come out of it.
Speaker 2Yeah, that is moving day white. Like next episode, couldn't go a yard at the trials in Sydney and then he's trialed a lot better in Melbourne. So, um, it's going to be a great race. Yeah. Very good race. Who are you with, Gareth? Um, you know what? I'm just going to sit back and enjoy this race. I think your filly's very good, but that jump out, they didn't let the next episode go. I hope pocket full of cash runs a big race for Reece Goodwin. I think that'd be terrific.
Speaker 3I'm sure. Well, the way it trialed, it looks, it looks a beautiful horse. I saw him, I thought, gee whiz, what's he by? Rich enough? Yeah. Oh my God. He's a beautiful horse.
Speaker 2Yeah. So I hope he runs a big race. And Boobay as well. Overexcited was, there's big reps on that.
Speaker 3Sam Freedman's declaring that too. A hundred percent, isn't he? He's bullish, yeah.
Speaker 2He's a good judge, I reckon, when he declares one. He used to be a good judge. Yeah. I'm not sure.
Speaker 3Maybe. We'll see today at Ballarat. He likes one today at Ballarat. Which one in the first?
Speaker 2I think so. Yeah. We'll take a break. We'll come back with more of your questions and the Wednesday Agenda.
Speaker 1On 0499 736 736. Live across Australia.
Speaker 2This is a Wednesday Agenda. You're having a look at the early acceptance sectors there at Flemington.
Speaker 3There's only 10 in the Turnbull now.
Speaker 2Yeah. Who? Read them out.
Speaker 3Sedelius. Yes. Half yours. Aliana. Aliana. Half yours. I hope he wins. Cosmic Crusader. She's a hustler. Asterix. Soul of Spain. Buckaroo Deacon. Oh, so he's out. Birdman. He might come back in. There's still 20 minutes to go.
Speaker 4Yeah. 930. They closed, didn't they? Yeah. Well, there you go.
Speaker 2Plenty of text messages coming through. Retire the old fella. He doesn't owe anything. He doesn't owe anyone anything. If he enjoys being in work, keep him in work. Give him a job. Perhaps being a pony. He can travel to the races with young horses, et cetera. Retirement doesn't mean being a paddock. That's from Paula.
Speaker 3I agree with that.
Speaker 2Yeah. Can you ask Troy if he thinks the Manicato meeting will also go back one week like the AFL Grand Final next year? That's from Brendan.
Speaker 4Yeah. 100% it will. Yeah. We always fall in with.
Speaker 2No, that won't happen, surely. Why? Because then you have to move the rest of the program. So, you can't. You can't. Then you'll have to move the Melbourne Cup. Can't move that.
Speaker 3Melbourne Cup's always the first Tuesday in November. Yeah, okay. I'm wrong.
Speaker 2So, they'll have to. I don't know what meeting will be AFL Grand Final weekend next year. All right. It's been a slow start of the week with me because it's obviously the Grand Final. Usually, I'll have that straight away. You look a little bit dehydrated. Any chance, yeah. Hi, when Jenny was racing out of form 18 months to two years ago, she was at the stage when she was just giving up, gone at the 300-meter mark. That's when people were saying, retire, Jenny. But it's going a lot better now. That's from Keith. I think the key to Jenny is placing her in the right races and making sure, like, the King Charles and the Cox Plate and those type of races, when there is genuine tempo nearly guaranteed. Is not ideal for her.
Speaker 3Goes good fresh, too, doesn't she?
Speaker 2Yeah. But those fan early group races to kick off preparations, like the horses taking her on, don't really want to go and sacrifice themselves and have a gut bust early on in the preparation. And you lived through that with half yours at the Gold Coast, et cetera. We did. Hi, Team Kelvin. Which horses are you scared of in the Dane Hill that could turn the tables, a natural fling? Any roughy? None of them.
Speaker 3No. You're that confident. Does she handle the weight? She's effective on soft ground. Heavy, I don't know. I think she'll be better on a good fall.
Speaker 4Well, if you're heavy, it's going to be interesting, isn't it?
Speaker 3Well, if the rain comes.
Speaker 2Yeah. Would you scratch if it's a heavy track? No. Big difference having a run on three-year-old filly as opposed to an on-speed three-year-old filly getting carved up by carrying rising. It's going to be interesting to see how far Blue Door can go with carrying rising on that stage. Will be. Morning, Garrett, Troy, and Kelvin. So, Dilley is for the Turnbull. No offence to half yours. I'm a big fan. Backed him in the Melbourne Cup last year. Didn't have enough money on him. He's warming up. Wait till the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup. He was bred by the late Cole McKenna for the staying races. Actually, a Jericho. Thanks. No offence taken. Thank you. Good luck Saturday. Exciting racing ahead. Love this time of the year. Have you made your mind up on the Caulfield Cup yet?
Speaker 4No. No. Are you going to target a Jericho?
Speaker 2He'll be going to the Caulfield Cup.
Speaker 4What weight will he get in a Jericho?
Speaker 2We're going to take a break on the other side. I'm going to touch on this really interesting story. I'm coming out of WA with Grant and Alana Williams, their premier. Our WA's premier stable that yesterday was announced by Racing Wager in Western Australia that they've been disqualified for 12 months. They've immediately appealed that disqualification. So, I'll touch on all of that straight after this.
Speaker 1736, live across Australia, this is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 2Welcome back to Giddy Up, Gareth Hall with you. The big news yesterday, not just in WA racing, but Australian racing, was this announcement from Racing Wager in Western Australia. They put out a media release mid-afternoon. It said, Racing WA stewards have concluded deliberations with respect to penalty in relation to the charge issued under AR240, to which Mr. Grant and Mrs. Alana Williams had pleaded guilty. After considering all matters, Racing WA stewards determined to impose a disqualification of 12 months effective immediately in consideration of the time their licenses were suspended prior to granting a stay of proceedings. In relation to that suspension, the period of disqualification will be adjusted by 29 days and will expire on the 29th of August. When determining this penalty, this is the penalty with Starry Heights, who had Ritalin, which is an ADHD drug in its system. And it broke down in that Kalgoorlie Cup and, unfortunately had to be put down um and when determining the penalty the stewards considered among other things the plea of a guilty to the charge and the personal considerations of mr and mrs williams the intent and purpose of the rule which is fundamental to maintaining the integrity of the racing industry the nature of the substance detected which is a prohibited list a substance thereby having the status of being a permanently banned substance that all those submissions were made with respect to the this is the key point here to the detection of the substance being due to contamination the stewards were not satisfied that there was sufficient basis upon which to accept those submissions consequently the inquiry was unable to establish an accepted explanation of the detection of the substance and previous penalties issued in other matters so they get 12 months now um straight after that alana williams and grant williams sent a letter to their owners um and part of that read alana and i devastated by this decision we believe the penalty imposed is grossly excessive and disproportional and does not properly reflect the circumstances surrounding this matter we have instructed our legal counsel to immediately take the necessary steps to appeal this decision we will also be seeking a stay of the disqualification pending the determination of that appeal so um they won't be having any runners this weekend their objective now is to try and have horses um they with the stay to have them were they successful with the state um they're they're going to have that's still going through the the legal process as we speak so they want to have horses ready to go so they can nominate next tuesday um i know that they were very very surprised with the 12 months disqualification they can't believe it they're confident that they can win this on appeal um it's been a situation that's gone on for far too long now it's nearly 12 months since that situation with starry heights so from a trainer's perspective troy and you're the president of the trainers association the australian trainers association like it is a difficult one for everybody involved obviously the stewards have got to do their job um but they believe that this was a contamination um grant and alana williams um and um they basically can't believe that they've been given 12 months yeah that's
Speaker 4the thing is that they need to prove how the substance got there um and without knowing what happened it probably sounds a bit like they can't they can't exactly put a finger on how it got there where the contamination come from but if it is contamination it does seem um 12 months it's bloody hard for um to pick up a training business and
Speaker 2what does that mean for a trainer of that size to have 12 months
Speaker 4off oh it's uh it's going to be really really tough for them knowing grant and they'll be back and and wa they'll get over it but gee it's going to be it's going to be a big speed
Speaker 2bump for them yeah and um so they'll appeal and then as i said before i think they're pretty confident that they'll be able to get off um but yeah i think it surprised a lot of people yesterday that they did get the 12 months and as you pointed out if you're not in that hearing it is difficult to have an opinion um on that situation so what we can do is we report the facts yeah and obviously we got that letter from grant and alana and we're going to be able to get the 12 months off and we're going to be able to get the 12 months off and we're going to be able to get the 12 months off and we're got that letter from grant alana williams um to their owners and then the media release from racing wagering and
Speaker 4they'd be absolutely gutted and that you know they'd feel that they've let everybody down and in their heads they don't think that they have because they're they're obviously saying that yeah um they didn't do it and
Speaker 2it's like we saw that sam and anthony got a month but that was a different circumstances because they were renting at pine cliff with grant alana williams they own their own property 12 months is a long longer than a month it's a lot harder and they've got all of their stars ready to go um and i think some will be kicking off their campaigns kelvin head of the the summer carnival there so that's even makes it difficult so when
Speaker 3so when um when do we find out if they get to stay on well i think
Speaker 2that over the next couple of days right yep they'll be trying to hurry this process through i don't know if it's if the disqualification starts immediately do they have to get their how long do they have to get their
Speaker 4horses off that property they'd give they'd give them time if they're not you know it becomes a welfare issue if they say you can't be on the property and you can't feed them that that's just stupid so there'd be processes that they'd have to go through yeah
Speaker 2is there a foreman that grant alana can look after their stable in the same way david uses looked after kieran mars i don't not one that he didn't
Speaker 3know that aaron purcell was the trainer
Speaker 2yeah um can i can you ask kelvin about full confidence today at bellaran and say it's last run against regal ambition looks good for him and does barrier 13 dent your confidence kelvin yeah
Speaker 3i'm a little bit concerned about the barrier but we wanted to get her racing um hopefully she can have a bit of luck three wide with cover and um yeah the form looks all right we like the philly hopefully she can win
Speaker 2today all right then how many winners
Speaker 3for you today uh we've got a couple of nice chances i think um race one's a nice philly but it looks a hot race each way chance you're confident you can beat sam not semantics not really semantics has tried out very well but i think she can run top three and i think she's got a good chance to win i think she's got a good three at 12 to one i think that's a good good um each way bed i think um expensive taste is at each way chance and and probably full confidence is the best i would think yeah any winners later
Speaker 2on in the week apart from half yours and natural fling we've got
Speaker 3three two-year-olds running which is exciting in the in the maradong trial they will try it up well um can you tip a two-year-old or is it just too hard i think you can tip a two-year-old but you need a lot of things to go right and they've got a they've you know we might be on a wet track they've never seen a wet track because there hasn't we haven't you know we haven't trialed them on it so but there's some nice
Speaker 4horses if it remained a soft five what's your best in a two-year-old
Speaker 3i think the animo cult anchor is the best and lapolo runs on saturday in the superimposed gareth i think he's a very bright cult looking forward to him and obviously natural fling half yours and we've got a nice day i'm i'm up and about about saturday
Speaker 2yeah it could be either a day of joy or a day of heartbreak you'll be right we're used to this train yes i've got three
Speaker 4runners saturday and i'm praying that the rain doesn't come okay well you're in all sorts i know
Speaker 2i know um there's text messages coming through they pleaded guilty the horse died deserved 12 months that's like there's a difference between pleading guilty to presentation yeah and pleading guilty to administration yeah exactly
Speaker 4and i don't think they're um i know they're not pleading guilty that they gave it to the horse so yeah you know they're just trying to explain where it came
Speaker 2from yeah and the difference in that racing wa treats presentation charges as a capital offense in all other jurisdictions these tread is more a minor infraction punishable by a finer or suspension
Speaker 4every every case is very
Speaker 2different that's not right um a few text messages coming through here um how many two-year-olds will you start early on in the season kelvin
Speaker 3well we've got three accepted for saturday yeah because they're all ready to go we've got two trialing uh tomorrow at caulfield that will be targeted towards the debutant stakes they're actually they haven't got the bendigo race anymore so there's an english restricted race coming up but but pre you know in this first month or two here in victoria there actually isn't a huge amount of racism for that reason is why we're going to start the three the philosophy
Speaker 2the philosophy why you're starting your two-year-olds um to kick off the season like there's a lot of trainers now holding them back
Speaker 3uh just because simply they're there and they're thriving within the stable they've jumped out well and um they're eating up and they're sound and you know it's it's we've got two colts in a philly but if this philly was to run second or third in a listed race it's you're nearly setting your future up you know very early on so i think you've got to take your opportunities when they're there when will we see your two-year-old story i'll have my first
Speaker 4runner in the debutant as well i've got a franco philly that i think is very very good called sonnets okay you're not selling any of those being sold the day after to the ready to run yep there you go yeah she breezed she trialed last week when her trial by i've seen this
Speaker 3movie before yeah is that
Speaker 4a risk to do that yeah very much so yeah but uh i'm a risk taker
Speaker 2yeah so if it wins you get double the amount that you wanted if she fails and you're in trouble yeah yeah so it's like it's worth a lot more than that she's a she's a
Speaker 4franco philly with a beautiful page she wins
Speaker 2by 10 on the beat you think oh no why am i selling her well
Speaker 4hopefully i'll have someone that can buy her but every everything that we sell is for sale and i i can't um you can't backtrack i can't pick and choose which ones i want to keep otherwise i'll i'll never be able to sell anything and that's the
Speaker 2different way that the the trainers can make money yeah exactly yeah and
Speaker 4i need to do that too to um fund the rest of my uh training life yes hey boys
Speaker 2you go and get in this weekend hopefully the rain doesn't come for you troy hopefully the rain comes for you calvin that's the trainer's world that we live in um and uh good luck today ballarat you're heading to ballarat i'm not but tony
Speaker 3will be there oh yeah probably with a tie on and then he'll be doing a great job tony it looks great
Speaker 2all the time you keep on dominating boys thanks for that appreciate you coming on giddy up as always for the wednesday agenda we're going to take a break on the other side of it looking forward to catching up with gil mclaughlin he won't be far away of course the ceo of tab corp um and gil's going to have a chat about the national tote which has got everyone eagerly awaiting to see what it does look like for us punters what it means for australian racing what it will mean for not just the thoroughbred code but also of course the greyhound and harness code so there's plenty to discuss with gil mclaughlin coming up after nine o'clock this is giddy up all thanks to bet365 it's great to have your company on this wednesday morning join the conversation text
Speaker 1us on oh four double nine seven three six seven three six Live across Australia, this is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 2Plenty of text messages coming through, 049-736-736 to join our conversation on the Gareth's Horse and Hound text line. Next year, because of the AFL Grand Final going back a week, it'll be Turnbull Stakes Day on that Sunday. So Turnbull Stakes Day on that Sunday. WG Central Europe Plans, Paddock Guineas and Cornwall. That's from Troy from St Kilda. I've got to chase that up. I'm not quite sure what they're going to do with Central Europe, but he did have a gut buster there the other day there in the Golden Rose. Hi, Gareth. All the talk lately with the Guineas has been with the Caulfield Guineas. Why is the Caulfield more prestigious than the Thousand Guineas? That's from Warren, because it's a stone-making race, Warren, the Caulfield Guineas. The Thousand Guineas is always a great race as well during that carnival. And there's some nice, talented fillies going around, and this year's Thousand Guineas that I think everybody's looking forward to. Calvin did give a good push for full confidence. That barriers the concern a little bit. She'll go back, and stepping up to that 1,400 metres should suit her. And that Regal Ambition form does look pretty good now. What other text messages have we got for you today? There's plenty of text messages coming through for Gil regarding this national tote. What if you're trainer and owner? Race clubs won't let you win a race. How do you survive? They done my horse at Warwick Farm, so I. That doesn't quite make sense, that text message. We'll keep on moving on. Sometimes when you write your text message, it'd be great if you could read it before you send it to me, but in saying that, I should be able to read it as well. But sometimes it can be difficult, trying to do two or three things at once. Paulie Sebastiani, what's your best today? That's a very good question, Gareth.
Speaker 5I did the form last night. I do like. I do like Graeme Begg's first starter in the first at Ballarat aroused. Okay. To beat Semantics. Yeah, I'm just a little concerned with the barrier. The 10, the 1 and the 9, they're all the first starters in that race. Semantics aroused. Or rather, Semantics is having its second start. She's having her second start in her career. But the two first starters look nice horses. It's a tricky, tricky race. Cavill Avenue, very hard to beat. I think race 6, number 9, there's been good money for it. But I don't have an absolute best today, so I'm not going to lean the punters into anything. You fired yesterday. Yeah. We went well yesterday with the Matt Laurie debutante. Nadia Daniels gave the horse an absolute peach up on the speed there. She's riding in good form, Nadia. She is. She is. So that was a nice result.
Speaker 2Paul Bloodworth will join us shortly. Looking forward to that to give us an update on those international horses that have arrived in Melbourne town, especially for the Coolfield Cup. Some of those will go to Geelong and Moonee Valley Cup. And of course, later on, if they can get to a Melbourne Cup. So looking forward to catching up with Paul. Those races there were bet 3, 6, 5. They're out 2 for the Group 1s on Saturday. The Epsom Handicap's interesting. Both Autumn Boy and Well Written have drawn nicely. Now, Autumn Boy is the favourite at $3.40. Well Written at $5. She's been easy. The big mover is for the Joe Pride Cadolphin Runner in Attica at $6. Charwulf at $11. And Mr. Millers had support. He got a start. He was 50-50 of sneaking into the field for the Epsom. But he will take his place. And Idle Fly is at $15. And then, of course, in the flight stakes, they would be concerned with the number of horses that have paid up for the flight stakes because basically it's a race in four. With Global Goal, Striking Alibi, Striking Alibi and Bangkok Hottie. So not much between those three fillies in the market. $2.75 for Global Goal. Striking Alibi, $2.75. Bangkok Hottie at $3.50. And Queen's Gamble is an $8 chance. The rest are at a big price and they're making up the numbers for that flight stake. Hey, we'll take a break. Gil McLaughlin. Oh, he's ready to go, Gil. Great to have the CEO of Tabcorp, Gil McLaughlin, joining me here on Giddy Up on this Wednesday morning with the National Tote just around the corner now. The much-anticipated National Tote. Gil, thanks for your time. Welcome to Giddy Up.
Speaker 6Thanks, Gary. Thanks for having me.
Speaker 2It's been a long wait for this National Tote and we'll officially get to see it on Friday. Is that right?
Speaker 6Yes. Sort of a soft launch Friday and a hard launch. Saturday. But, you know, depending on who you talk to, it's sort of 10 years in the making. So it's been a journey and there's been different issues at play, but Friday we'll have deeper liquidity and national pricing and we're looking forward to it.
Speaker 2What will the National Tote mean for punters?
Speaker 6I hope ultimately greater price stability and more competitive pricing. And, you know, it's in the short term. I think we'll find, we hope that will grow and liquidity will continue to deepen and there's a longer term plays around coming in internationally and that's, we hope, it's a window to the future. I think we'll be supporting it strongly with generosity and hopefully augmenting that liquidity. And longer term, it'll be new products and, you know, appealing to people because we've brought in a sort of exotic style bet. That we can, that we can grow.
Speaker 2Working with the corporates to build those pools. How's that been going?
Speaker 6Well, we're, it's a journey and we've got, we compete where we compete. We also believe that we can, you know, there's a, we're already a wholesaler in many areas and, you know, that's all I really say on all that.
Speaker 2Yeah. All right then. So the National Tote, it'll kick off officially, on Saturday. So punters, there's a few text messages coming through. If they've got tab accounts in New South Wales and Victoria and outside those two states, you won't have to change your account. It'll all come together for you.
Speaker 6Yeah. Or one deal. It'll be one seamless transaction. We've already, Gareth, had a, you know, we're comfortable with where we're at. We had a sort of a quiet launch on, I want to say Friday last week. We did it. We've already done a meeting with Warwick. We've done others. So, you know, I think people won't have noticed and it's been pretty seamless. And so wherever you are, bet into the quality, bet into the pools and you'll feel no difference, but hopefully better pricing and a better product.
Speaker 2Will we get to see a big difference, you reckon, for the greyhound and harness punters as well?
Speaker 6We think so, yes. And I mean, it's going to be, I would think have a dramatic uplift or change for, for, for, for greyhounds and harness on sort of weekly meetings. It should look very different. I mean, I'm not, I'm not promising the world here, Gareth, but it will look different and we'll, in terms of the depth and hopefully the stability and the competitiveness.
Speaker 2I think you mentioned before there'd be special offers for the punters there with Tabcorp. What will they be going forward? More jackpots? What else can they look forward to?
Speaker 6Well, there'll be jackpots. So there'll be some specific stuff, promotions on Saturday, clearly. And I don't want to run ahead of the, of the promotion, but there'll be jackpots and seeded pools and the generosity plan will target exotics and other stuff. So if you want, if you like exotic betting or you're looking for promotions or you want deeper pools, look around and we'll be appealing to all the customers, you know, starting, starting really heavily on, on Saturday. So Friday will be, you know, the official launch, but a soft launch in the sense to make sure you're working nationally across all codes and all meetings with, you know, a huge day racing across Randwick, Flemington and the Gold Coast tracks we, you know, we're partners with and, and multiple group ones and a big day of racing. And I hope you have, look like trifectas on Saturday, Gareth, that'll be a focus for us.
Speaker 2Well, we're going to follow Mark Hunter, of course, on Friday, he loves his parlays and roving bankers and all that with the trifectas. So we'll, we'll lean on him. We'll, we'll lean on him on Friday to help us back when we're at Flemington on Saturday. But there's a few questions coming through on the Gareth's Horse and Hound text line regarding the takeouts. Obviously different states have different takeouts. How's that all going to work, Gil?
Speaker 6So part of one of the biggest challenges, Gareth, was, was synchronising those. Yeah. So there is ups and downs effectively. And I don't know if you, I don't know how much detail you want, but no takeout rates changed more than 0.5% The win and place takeout rates have both reduced by half a percent. And a couple of the exotics have gone up by half a percent. Some have gone down by 0.5%. So it's tried to synchronise as most efficiently as we can through the three pools. So, and they'll be subject to review. So there's a first phase to get it through with the three PRAs. And so, you know, the most any takeout rate is in exotics is by 0.5%. Some have come down by 5%. Like a treble has come down by 5%. And the win and place have come off by 0.5%. So I feel there's a positive story in that for funders. And, you know, again, I'm going to come back to say we're going to review that. And there's a lot in store in that because we can control that now. We need to continue to work with our PRAs and partners, but we, you know, we want, you know, this is peer versus peer betting. We want it to be, and we think we can work hard on that.
Speaker 2So when will that review happen? So how long do you give it to say, okay, then we can think that now we can take and change the takeouts? Is it six months? Is it three months?
Speaker 6I don't think, I don't put a fixed timeline. It'd be a constant review. But what we do know is there are tools to make it a bit more dynamic and to be, we can be on it now where we've got a national token. We've got one set of takeout rates and we can actually lean in on it because it's an important part of the racing industry and we need it to be competitive and it's a priority for us.
Speaker 2When you took over as the boss of TabCorp, did you think it would be this hard to get a national total or is it has gone a little bit smoother than you thought it would?
Speaker 6Good question. I don't think anything's easy in a fragmented world. And when you've got tech issues, regulatory issues, stakeholder issues, commercial issues, which evolved here, I don't think I'd expect it to be easy. And I knew that it's people who try and do this for a long time. So I guess I, but there certainly was times when this felt difficult, but we are here and I think it's good for racing and it's good for punters. And I hope ultimately long-term we're good for sport, sport punters as well. And we've got plans for into the new year about what that might look like with product development.
Speaker 2So will there be pools that you can bet? So if Brisbane take on Fremantle, Mount AFL grand final, instead of taking a fixed dodge, you can bet into a pool. Um, is that what you're thinking? That'll be fascinating.
Speaker 6Yeah. And I think then you take also, you know, the world's fragmented and, but, and parimutuel commingling, actually has got a lot of people looking to actually have deeper pools. This, this, this issue exists across the world. Yeah. If you took global sports like soccer, you could actually imagine where all the pools can link up globally. So there's, we started doing that. We we've talked about, um, uh, world, um, you know, pooling on a global basis and there's a version of that, which we hope we, you know, we, we soon, if you're having a bet on the Melbourne cup at a high street shop in new market, and you're betting with the UK toe, hopefully you'll be betting into our pools here and that's what the plan is. And then you roll that out and you're going to, I think you have the same view of the sport.
Speaker 2Um, two more questions before we let you go and we appreciate your time. I know you're a busy man today. Um, the world pool races, we say a lot of, the short price favourites paying shorter on the tote compared to, um, the fixed odds. Um, what would you explain that to the punters? That's just the, the way that it's all set up. And obviously there's more people I try to explain to my listeners, but the more people there's more money that have been punted on those favourites. I know the take out slightly bigger on the world pool, but, um, obviously you can, you don't get restricted really on the tote.
Speaker 6So it's three things I'd say that first of all, to all the punters out there. Yes, that's a problem because what actually happens is, you know, when you've had like last spring, when you had horses that were going off shortly, you know, obviously carrying rising, but business Dana and others, um, um, with the Hong Kong, there's a lot of money coming from Hong Kong and they like backing favourites. So we're working on that. We're looking at options over the spring to ensure the world pool price is stronger for the favourites. Um, and longer term, we're working with the Hong Kong Jockey Club on takeout rates. And, and how will we resolve all that? The other part I'd say to you is if you do have a, um, you know, a carrying rising and you want to back something else, then the price is going to be better with us than the fixed price generally. Yeah. And so, um, what, you know, that's the points I make it that we're acknowledging it. We're, we're going to do stuff to support that during the spring with looking at takeout rates. And then there's also, you know, statistically 60% of all before national toe, 60%. Several all group one winners have been better prices on the tote than they have been fixed price.
Speaker 2Yeah. But I'm happy to hear that you agree that the takeout rate for the world pool is too much. And obviously you're working on that.
Speaker 6Um, yeah. And, and, and it's more of that, that journey gathered about, about solving these issues rather than being denial about them talking about and going, yeah, it's an issue. Yeah, it's an absolute, absolutely an issue. So we're going to have a more tactical solve for the spring and then working on a long term, plan to resolve it because, because we need to resolve this.
Speaker 2Yeah. What about emergencies for the cup?
Speaker 6Well, that's a, that's a technology issue. And we'll solve we've made a, I don't want to run ahead and get too detailed on it, but we are in the process of executing on a transaction with it. We've got a different type where we will to solve that technology issue.
Speaker 2Yeah. That would be good. I reckon I'm having emergencies for the carpet. Um, it is a change.
Speaker 6All I'd say to you is what's the space? Well, yeah, on all of these things, they take time, but it's not, we're not in denial about things that need fixing up. Yeah. We need to, the partners will have issues. And when I arrived and had my own versions of these issues, they're just either a tech issue or regulatory issue or, or a stakeholder issue that just takes time to resolve. But I hope the majority of things we have, we're on a journey for, and please be patient. And thanks for everyone's loyalty.
Speaker 2As this job surprised you when you've taken over, was it, what you expected? Was it harder?
Speaker 6Um, it certainly hasn't been easier. Yeah, no, we were on a journey guys. We're going, we're going okay. You know, we can do better and to the loyal tab partners out there. Thank you. Where, where this is an important step this weekend. It wants to have all the problems in one move. There will be, there'll be races where the favorites going off short and the fixed odds, but we've got lots of things to do that. And there's a lot of times that are not going to be the majority of times. That won't be. We look forward to everyone's ongoing support.
Speaker 2We wish you the best of luck, Gil. We appreciate you coming on giddy up, updating the punters there because it is a, it's a big weekend to Friday to Saturday in the history of Australian racing with this national pool coming into play. So, um, I know there's been a lot of hard work and negotiations happening behind closed doors. So we wish you the best of luck.
Speaker 6Thank you, mate. I appreciate this.
Speaker 2We'll go. Here's Gillian McLaughlin, the CEO of tab corp and we'll take a break at 16 minutes past nine. And on the other side of it, we're going to catch up with Paul Bloodworth. The racing manager there at racing Victoria.
Speaker 1Join the conversation. Text us on 0 4 double nine 7 3 6 7 3 6 live across Australia.
Speaker 2Paul Bloodworth joins us now, the racing manager there for racing Victoria. Always great to catch up with blood because head of racing for racing Victoria, because it's such a, a terrific time of year and exciting time of the year, especially when the internationals arrive on Australian soil and Paul Bloodworth is ready to go. G'day Paul. Morning, Gareth. Are you happy with the amount of horses that have arrived here in that first shipment? Is that what you expected? Yeah. I mean,
Speaker 7look, we, at one point thought we might have a couple more horses, a little bit disappointed. We didn't end up with the Cox plate horse this year, but, um, yeah, the, the, the, the horses that have arrived, uh, on Monday morning here, the seven horses, uh, they're a good, good crew of horses and, uh, they just starting to stretch their legs here and, um, getting ready for races like the Caulfield cup. Um, probably of the horses we've got here, there's probably three Caulfield cup runners, uh, wine, dark sea, empty jar and staff it, uh, a couple of others may go to the coffee cup if they managed to sneak in, but otherwise they'd probably end up in races. Like I'm the Geelong cup and the mini Valley cup, trying to win their way into races like the Melbourne cup. So, so yeah, I'm really happy with the horses that we've got here at the moment. And we've got another seven horses in pre sport quarantine around the world. At the moment that will arrive in October,
Speaker 2just back to the Cox play. Um, because at the start of July, we all thought that we might get a couple of stars for the Cox plate, mainly because this year, the races is being held at Flemington and the mile that we're getting from Europe is that they would prefer to go to Flemington then say Mooney Valley, but for no horses to turn up, have you like when you sit back and review this at the end of the spring, why do you think that's been where we can't get an international horse for, for the Cox play?
Speaker 7It's a good question. Uh, certainly wasn't for the lack of trying, uh, the many value racing club, uh, sort of in conjunction with race in Victoria, try, you know, made some attractive offers to, which stables around the world, uh, you know, one horse in particular clan again come for the Cox fight this year. And they all considered it greatly, but you know, it is a long trip and there is lots of options for those sources around the world. I'm in Cal and again, it's a good example. He's going back to the Japan cup chasing a very lucrative bonus to win the race again. Um, so we, it's a very competitive landscape when you're looking at that 2000 meter horse, like the cups are a different kettle of fish, if you like, um, given the unique nature of the hand, of the handicap of the handicap status of those races. And the horses that try to try to run on those races, uh, whereas the Cox play you're competing with arcs, you're competing with Japan cups. Um, you're competing with British champions day. A lot of the horses that we targeted are going to end up on British champions day on call for cup day. So, so it is difficult. Um, but I know the club of determined to keep going and hopefully next year when the, when the Mooney Valley racing club hopefully returned to Mooney, Valley on the new track, um, we'll have a couple of internationals there, but, um, it is, it is, And the club know this, that it is a very difficult landscape to compete in around the world for that type of horse.
Speaker 2So when you, like, obviously you're looking for solutions to try and get these horses or maybe one or two internationals to come for our Great Wait for Age race, the Cox Plate. But as you pointed out, it is situated in a really difficult, it's in a tough time slot to compete with big race meetings and big races around the world. So even putting up the prize money, it would help, I guess. But how much prize money would you need to persuade, say, Calanda Ken to come to Australia instead of Japan?
Speaker 7Well, it's a good question. I mean, increasing prize money, no question, would help. It's already very competitive, but races of similar nature around the world are at similar prize money levels. And when you can sort of stay home and compete in those races around the world, you may compete at the same level. Now, you may be competing in stronger races, potentially, against the best in Europe or the best in Japan. But, you know, when you're faced with the quarantine and the long trip here, if you're racing for similar prize money in your own jurisdiction, that sort of can sometimes be the more attractive offer for the owners and the trainer. But, yeah, I mean, look, of course, prize money increases would assist. I mean, the club, as I said, you know, they sent out some very attractive offers for, with travel incentives attached to some of the best horses in the world. So, I think that's the approach. And it has worked in the past. I mean, Romantic Warrior is a very good example of that. Liz Griffier. So, it is possible for those horses. It's just you've got to, really, it's kind of a little bit timing-wise. You've just got to get the right horse with the owners having the right ambitions and then you can land them. So, we'll keep trying with the club. And I'm sure that over time we'll see, we'll see some horses returning for the Cox Plate.
Speaker 2Could Racing Victoria work with race clubs in this state to have bonuses to try and persuade them? Would that work?
Speaker 7Oh, absolutely, yeah. Well, Liz Griffier, when she came, there was a million-dollar US bonus for a horse that won the Takarazuka Kinnan and then won the Cox Plate, which she managed to achieve. So, yes, they definitely would help having bonuses attached to, that have to be probably races run overseas and then come and win the Cox Plate. But that's certainly something we've talked about with the club over time. At the moment, they try to use travel incentives, but that is definitely something that we'll look at in future as to whether or not we return to having some bonuses linked into the Cox Plate. And the Japan Cups are a very good example of that. They've got enormous bonuses for races that you win around the world and then come and win the Japan Cup. And Kalandigan did that last year and will aim to do it again this year. So, they can be very effective when you've got the right horse. Yeah. So, you know, it means you also don't have to increase the overall prize money for the race if you've got that bonus linked to it.
Speaker 2Yeah. So, we get the internationals to step out for the Cool Fuel Cup. Is it too early to ask you who do you think settled in best? Are they giving much away the connections? Do we need to send a spy to Werribee, Paul?
Speaker 7Well, Olivia Cole from Racing.com was down here today, so she's probably the best spy so far. But, look, I mean… From what I can gather, and just chatting to the lads here, they've all settled in well. No one's showing any signs of, you know, the long trip. They're both… Oh, sorry. They've all been out on the track the last two days, really just stretching their legs at this point, and they'll start winding up the work in the next week or so. So, no, I think it's really interesting. We very rarely have horses that don't travel well anymore. Yeah. IRT, who travel the horses, do a fantastic job in managing that. And they have their own flying grooms on the plane looking after the horses the whole way. And I think it's just over the last 20 years the process for flying horses around the world has improved immeasurably. And you see that horses are travelling all over the world, you know, to all parts of the world all the time. So, yeah, it's not really… It's actually the exception to the rule where you have a horse that gets here and doesn't settle in and doesn't travel well. So… I think they also… A lot of the horses also… You know, most of them are coming from big strings of horses in their stable, and they come here and they get the one-on-one attention. And there's loads of horses that really appreciate that, from what I can tell anyway. So, yeah. So, no, at this point, everyone's very happy with how their horses are travelling and starting to settle in.
Speaker 2I think you make that really good point, Iron. We'll try our very best to make sure that we get as much out of the participants there. As we can. But you can do all the form that you want when you have a look at these international raters, and you can analyse them with all of the data and the times that they're running. But I reckon the key to having success with these international horses is working out, firstly, have they enjoyed settling into Werribee? And as you pointed out, some horses getting that one-on-one attention can jump out of the ground. They can be three or four or five lengths better horses here in this country compared to what they are back home. And we've seen it with a few horses over the time. So, I find that the most interesting part with these international horses, getting to Werribee and working out. And sometimes you can hear different rumours as well, Paul, as you well know. Some that you can believe, some that you don't. But I think it's a key to see which horses have jumped out of the ground, if you like, when they arrive in this country.
Speaker 7Oh, absolutely. And I think the poster boy for that is a horse called Prince of Arran. Yes. Who was a. Was a moderate performer in Europe, probably a Group 3 listed horse. But Charlie Fellows, to his credit, had a thought in his head that he'd really appreciate the one-on-one attention and he'd really appreciate the travel. And he came here and, you know, as we know, he ran three placings in Melbourne Cup. Probably should have won at least one of them. But you see it every year. There's always at least one horse in the yard that jumps out of the ground. And Goody Two-Shoes last year is probably a good example as well. You looked at her form and you sort of looked at it and went, "Oh, I'm not sure that's going to be good enough to win a Melbourne Cup." But she just, you know, jumped out of the ground, as you said, and nearly pulled it off, only getting beaten by a horse in a generation and a half yours. So, yeah, it's absolutely right. I would say don't believe all the rumours, Gareth. If you've got any questions, just give me a call.
Speaker 2Yeah. There was another one that loved life, Media Puzzle. Exactly. He surprised a few, I think. He won a Geelong Cup and then won a Melbourne Cup, that famous Melbourne Cup with Dee Oliver aboard. Yeah. So we might be able to find one this year. There's a few questions coming through. And I think these are – I'd be interested to get your answers to this question. So when you sit down with RV and Aaron Morrison and the executives and the board, like how many internationals is the right amount of internationals for the Melbourne Cup?
Speaker 7Well, that's a hard question to answer. My view on it is – and we're probably referring to the amount of horses Joseph has this year targeting the race. Well, I think they're just Joseph,
Speaker 2but I think we had 10 or 11 last year, if I can recall.
Speaker 7We had 10 international runners last year from six different countries. Yeah. Look, you know, we've – I think the most internationals we've ever had is 12 in the race, which is basically half the field. I mean, you could mount a case that that's probably too many. But at the same time, I was just saying to someone this morning that, you know, with the nine horses that Joseph's bringing, they're not going to get much change out of $1 million for shipping costs to bring those horses here. They're also paying all the costs for their staff and owners and everyone to travel. It's a huge exercise. And the Melbourne Cup is a handicap. If you have got form wherever you're trained, that Dave Egan allocates you a weight that gets you into the race, if you then make the effort to go through our veterinary protocols, go through our quarantine and come here to take your place, I can't see any reason why anyone would begrudge that. It is a handicap, and it's open to horses that have qualified. So we will see. I would expect this year we're probably looking at about eight or nine international runners. You would have to think, like, several of Joseph's, like Small Fry and Omni Man, they'll need to win races to get in. There's no way they'll get into the race without winning, say, a Geelong Cup or a Mini Valley Cup. But, again, you know, they're taking their chances. They've put the horses on the plane and gone to the effort to go through what's required to come here. If they then come and have a throw at the stumps at a Geelong Cup and happen to win it, well, good luck to them, I say, that they take their place in the race. And, you know, that's the same with, I guess, any horse around the world.
Speaker 2Yeah, and I think it's, when you have a look at the colours that they'll be running in, for Joseph O'Brien, like Wine Dark Sea defiantly in the Australian Bloodstock colours, James J. Braddock will be racing in Aussie Curse colours. So a lot of the big Australian owners now have identified Joseph as the man to get an international horse to travel out here and win a Melbourne Cup. He's won it twice. He's won a Cox Plate. So he seems to be the go-to man, in a way, for these Australian owners, the big Australian owners, to get a horse, give it to Joseph, race in Europe, and then hopefully get them into our melbourne cup and i reckon it's great where you get jp mcmanus um one of the biggest owners in world racing legendary in jumps racing have also like goody goody two shoes come out here and um how he wants to win a melbourne cup so yeah i think um i think there's a good mix of internationals i reckon eight or nine is a perfect number i reckon for our great race um you were very good on the tip last year i reckon if i can remember wine dark seas at 11 with bet 365 and the jar at 15 and where we staff it at 101 here on giddyup um so who's your pick of the caulfield cup and the other horse um that interests me as well that i don't think has got to start the king's old horse um point of law point of law is it going to start in the the caulfield cup yet um short answer
Speaker 7is no i think he's in the 30s um at the moment after the last round of dex there's another round of decks next week so we'll know a little bit more now look he may sneak in it'll just depend on how many of those above him that drop out over time and as we always know there's always um some horses that drop out for various reasons on the way to the caulfield and melbourne cup um he's a nice horse a three-year-old he's um got really good form in england he won a race called the baleen trophy which has been a race that several horses have run in and run well and then come out here before a horse called dogo legend won it a few years ago and then came out and ran fourth in the melbourne cup so um look at this point i i would say i don't think there's much between emf jar and wine dark sea on their form yeah um they've both won group three races at their last start one emf jar at goodwood the glorious stakes which which was a winning you're into the caulfield cup and uh wine dark sea won the jeffrey freer at newbury and that's that's by far their best in races so um and they've both got similar ratings and similar weights in them in both cups so you know i i don't think there's much between them i know the aussie bloodstock guys got a big rap on wine dark sea and he certainly was very impressive at his last start and beat a horse good to buy honor in that race uh that a lot of people know that he's probably on the on the over the hill to some extent in his career but um still still competitive at the top level so and emf jar had his first run at a mile and a half at goodwood and the second and third horses have come out and run really well since so the forms held up well as as well so i don't think there's much between them it'll probably come down to as you said earlier and how they settle in here um and how they draw in the caulfield cup that both those horses seem to like racing on speed so um you'd hope that they draw a good gate and can get a nice run up on the speed so yeah so i mean look at this point i would say and the price of staff it seems a little bit over his his best form is probably at a mile and a quarter yeah two thousand meters um but he has got uh a little bit of form in a mile and a half as well uh look i just would say hey you look at the forum book with joseph it's a little you almost
Speaker 2throw it out the window yeah these days they've jumped out of the ground a few of them like highway man defiantly if you watch them early on in the year you'd think well i'd be struggling to win a class one but um exactly
Speaker 7exactly and and you know so you just trust that he thinks he's got the right horse um and what i would say about him is i think he'd probably prefer a little bit of cut in the ground um all his best form in europe has been on soft ground so um if we did get some rain yeah uh leading up to the caulfield cup that might bring him right into contention so uh anyway it's it's an intriguing uh you know uh prospect in the next few weeks to see how these horses uh settle in and and get to the race
Speaker 2and damien line damien lane he rides um wine dark sea i don't know and for char have they got a jockey for
Speaker 7that galloper uh yes i think um ray dawson who rode the horse to win at goodwood will ride the horse is my understanding ray dawson geez
Speaker 2that took me off just a little bit but anyway um well
Speaker 7look he's he's um he's probably not in the top ranks of uh european riders but he's a he's a very competent writer very strong writer and um clearly got an association with the horse now so yeah she looks like roger's gonna be right gonna stay loyal to him so no he'll be fine
Speaker 2he'll be right um big day flemington moving day that turbo stakes is a beauty the final race to try and get a golden ticket into the melbourne cup with the bark cummings just having a look at the early acceptors there boy it's a big field and who knows what the weather will do as well so it will be the true meaning of moving day turnbull stakes day at flemington on saturday paul
Speaker 7uh it looks a fantastic day i sort of was talking to lee jordan before and he took me through some of the numbers across the day and some of the horses in it so it looks like a fantastic day let's just hope the weather's a little bit kind to us uh over the next few days it seems lee said that liam o'keefe doesn't have any concerns about the amount of rain that's forecast and how would you know really whether or not it'll be at the top end or the bottom end or somewhere in between so it looks like we'll probably be looking at some sort of soft ground i would have thought if if we even get half the rain that's forecast but um but you're right it's it is moving day and it will determine where loads of horses go for the rest of the spring so uh always a fantastic day uh after the footy's finished and
Speaker 2we crack on into spring unbelievable just the last one before we let you go you're being brilliant with your time did you get any turnover figures from sunday it looks like it was a healthy crowner talk to a few of the corporates they couldn't believe the um how well that day was from a turnover perspective it wasn't far off the meeting that was at the valley friday night um so they were over the moon i think with it being on obviously sunday afternoons it's a it's a much challenging time slot for turnover compared to saturday of course yeah
Speaker 7look we have got some initial numbers in and it is it is up on that mooney valley money on the friday night um that we ran previously um so which is really pleasing yeah sunday you're right it can be a problematic uh time slot but we had a bit of clear air not racing with any other sort of metro venues so that that would have assisted and it was it was a cracking day's racing and i think i think pride of jenny actually draws the punters in as well yeah at times he's got such a huge following um such a fantastic horse so that that may have drawn some eyeballs to it but no a really pleasing result and we've seen some good numbers from a wagering sense so far uh in the early part of spring so let's hope that that continues and i'm sure it will with with a meeting like saturday um with such fantastic fields um yeah it'll be it'll be a great day i would imagine go on
Speaker 2your paul we appreciate your time no doubt we'll be talking to you a lot over the next couple of months good

Speaker 8300 to go media world alabama lass here she comes now well written up on the outside tardelli out wider on the track then sterling express and she's a dealer well written comes to alabama alas on the inside alabama less well written gets her at the hundred and she draws away well written makes a seamless progression from princess of the turf to queen of the turf second over yeah she's
Speaker 2the pride of joy of new zealand racing at the moment well rich and she's had the seven starts for seven victories this daughter of written tycoon she's won more than 2.4 million dollars in money. That was her first up effort you just heard there in the past. She played at group one level. Her first group one is an older horse or outside of her three-year-old year. And she comes to Australia for the first time in our famous Epsom handicap. And she is a clear second favourite. She's been a little easy despite her drawing barrier number three for this group one on Saturday. She's trained by a dead set superstar in the training ranks in New Zealand. His name is Stephen Marsh and he joins us now. Stephen, thanks very much for your time.
Speaker 9Hi. Good to be on the show.
Speaker 2Thank you. How is she? Has she travelled to Australia yet?
Speaker 9Yes, she did. She got here, left New Zealand early evening, got here late last night, arrived at Randwick just after 10 last night and I couldn't believe how well she travelled. She hadn't turned her hair, didn't sweat. She's been on a couple of plans. The young horse came from Australia to New Zealand and then going down to the Thousand Guineas down at Rickerton. She also went on a plane. So she's well travelled and I couldn't have faulted the way she arrived last night. It was amazing how good it was.
Speaker 2That is sensational news. Are you happy with the barrier draw?
Speaker 9Very happy. I got asked by a couple of people if I could pick one gate, what would it be? I picked four, so we'll certainly take barrier three. It'll be a long way out at barrier 19, but three is very good.
Speaker 2What's her perfect conditions? There might be a little bit of rain around on Saturday. What would you like for her?
Speaker 9I'd like it to stay exactly how it is now and be firm, but it does look like a little bit of rain coming, but the better the track, the better her action and the better her turn of foot. So really hoping that the weather stays exactly how it is today and we'll be right.
Speaker 2What did you make of her wait there for the Epsom?
Speaker 9Certainly, it was a bit more than I thought and, hey, look, I'm certainly not one to complain, but I sort of didn't feel it. I didn't think we'd be as close to probably the favourite autumn boy. It's a fair lump of weight, 55, but yep, we've just got to take it and carry on. But what did you think? Did you think we'd get that far?
Speaker 2Well, I thought you were a little bit stiff. I think the autumn boy team were over the moon when they saw the weights. Yeah, absolutely. I think that, geez, you've been waiting to your best. But everyone's telling me how good she is in New Zealand, so I guess we'll get to see there on Saturday. But I think the year a little bit stiff that you got that much weight compared to, say, an autumn boy who's been behind a season alibi in recent times. But I guess the handicap has got a job to do and that's your weight and we'll see how you go there on Saturday. But, yeah, it'll be interesting to see how you measure up. I think everyone's excited, Steve. I think that when you get a. Racing in this country is so much better when we get a boom Kiwi coming to race in our big group ones.
Speaker 9Yeah, absolutely. No, look, it is exciting and how she wins, the handicap was bang on. And I'm certainly not saying he's not. But, yeah, I guess we just weren't quite expecting that. But, look, she's won two group ones, which. And she's beaten out a lot of horses, so I guess she certainly deserved a little bit of weight.
Speaker 2Yeah. How good is she?
Speaker 9Well, I think she's very, very good. She's exciting. She's got a great turn of foot. Who runs at a mile, New Zealand, 1000 guineas. And then, you know, the Karaka mile was. You know, they've been probably her two most devastating wins. So, I think, you know, with the draw, if we get a good track, I think you'll see her at her best. And, yeah, look, I think she's pretty untapped at the moment. I like the way she, you know, fresh up as a four-year-old, she's beaten those good quality weight for age horses in New Zealand. And I really like her very late in the piece. Like, the last sort of 100, 200 was very good. And just suggests that the mile now is just bang on for her. Yeah.
Speaker 2How are you feeling? How much pressure on training a mare like this? Obviously, she's more than just a thoroughbred horse, really, in New Zealand. She's transcended that sport, like, she sold out Ellerslie the other day for Kiwi Day, and she's been a horse that's been able to get New Zealand racing on the front page of the page, of the newspapers.
Speaker 9Yeah, look, I feel good about it. Privileged to have her, to be honest. It's nice. I mean, I guess this is why we do this, is to get a horse like this. Hey, I think probably come Saturday morning, I'll get a little bit, well, the heart rate may raise a couple of beats, but, you know, if you're not like that, you're probably in a coffin, aren't you? So, it's a great day to be, and you know, I'm not feeling nervous at the moment. It's just, I guess you just hope they travel well, and they do well, and just seeing her today, even, we took her straight out onto the track this morning. She's out on the track at five this morning, and, you know, she's just canted around beautiful. She's just such a happy mare, and that's what you want to see them travel and just, do everything what you want, because that's, I guess, the most important part.
Speaker 2Zach Loy gets to ride her for the first time. Will he jump aboard her before Saturday, or is she a pretty straightforward mare to ride?
Speaker 9No, I'm not going to bring her in. I will leave Ava to, just to ride her. She's only going to be going very quietly, and she's not a horse I don't think that he has to get a feel for. I'd rather her jump on race day and get the feel on the day. She's a real race day sort of horse, and actually, he doesn't need to be going around on the air, so no, everything's good.
Speaker 2And, Marcia, you've been on fire. You're fighting for the premiership early on in the New Zealand racing season. At the moment, we talk to our New Zealand experts, and they say that you probably never train better. So, in saying that, with all that pressure now on you, what winners have you got for us today?
Speaker 9Yeah, well, no things that we've usually pretty slow to start the new season, but I thought we had a tough enough sort of day on the home track today, but I thought Confectionist early on in the piece, I thought she's unbeaten on the synthetic. I thought she could probably win again, and I thought she might have been the best of the day for us.
Speaker 2Beautiful, mate. Any winners this weekend outside of well-written?
Speaker 9Yeah, well, I haven't drawn perfectly, but I've also really raked. It's actually an ex-Australian Galloper, and the same colours as well-written. Called Hidden Achievement. It's 75-1200. I think that draws a pistol out. I think he's drawn barrier 10, but a little bit of luck. I think he's a pretty exciting colt. He's around second in a group. One is a two-year-old here.
Speaker 2And was it hard for Matty Cartwright to jump off, and how has he been since that news?
Speaker 9Look, he's been brilliant. You know, he's taken on the chin. Obviously disappointed, but totally understood, and look, he's just carried on. He's still ridden there, and he came in and rode her in her final piece of work, and he's been rock solid. So, certainly a testament to the bloke he is.
Speaker 2As a few of the jocks have told me, he can go either two ways. He can make them stronger and more determined, and they can kick their career off, or they can sulk, but looks like he's done the right thing. So, we wish him the best of luck, and you the best of luck, Steve. We have run out of time, but you go and get them with your mare this weekend. It's great to have her in Australia, mate.
Speaker 9No, I really appreciate it. Thanks for the support, and I'm really looking forward to it.
Speaker 2Good on you, Marshy. Steve and Marshy there. Let's take a break. We'll come back with plenty more. We'll wrap up this hour, and then we've got a big third hour coming your way, highlighted, of course, by Bag of Tips.
Speaker 1Text us on 0499 736 736. Live across Australia, this is Giddy Up with Gareth
Speaker 2Hall. A lot of love coming through for Steve Marsh. I think everybody's hoping Well Written can run a big race there. Pauly Sebastiani, I think she's got a perfect draw. Hopefully the weather's nice to her, and there's not too much rain there at Randwick on Saturday. She's waited to her best, I reckon, 55, but I guess she's still untapped in a way. She's unbeaten, so this is her greatest challenge. We all know that now in the Epsom on Saturday. Trying to figure out what beats her. What factor beats her? Warden Boy was pretty good the other day.
Speaker 5Yeah. She just settles up on the speed. She races tractably. She's raced the Sydney way of going in New Zealand. I think Attica's a big chance. Yeah. No weight on his back. All reports from Stephen Marsh here, she's going to be travelling well, and she's fit and sound and ready to rock and roll.
Speaker 2Like, this is, as I said, whoever she beats, she wins. It'll be clearly the best horse that she's beaten. But she can only beat what she's beaten. That's correct. Exactly. In New Zealand.
Speaker 5Exactly. She made the step up to open grade last start. Put them away, and a couple of slaps down the backside. She just went whooshka past Alabama last. She was fantastic
Speaker 2first up. I'm just having a look at the Bart Cummings nominations. In fact, I'll get to them straight after 10 o'clock. This is Giddy Apple, thanks to Bet365. It's great to have your company this Wednesday
Speaker 1morning. Live across Australia, this is It's Giddy Up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 2There's a few text messages coming through. Affleworth, well, it's been accepted for both the Cummings, the Bar Cummings and the Metropolitan. I think the preference was to come to Melbourne for the Bar Cummings, but I think that they want a dry track, so they're going to weigh that up. I don't know if they'll get a dry track in Sydney or Melbourne, so it's a difficult decision for Matty Smith. With this stay on the rise, Affleworth, it'd be great to see him in Melbourne for a Bar Cummings, and it would be terrific for our great race, the Melbourne Cup, for a horse like Affleworth to win the Bar Cummings and win it well. He might be Australia's best chance if he can do that. He's untapped at the moment. We don't know how good he is, but he has sizzled the track the last couple of times he's been around, and he's done it pretty easily. He's been ridden like the best horse, and he's proven that. But wherever he goes to on Saturday will be his biggest test, so we'll just keep a close eye on that, and we should have Matty Smith hopefully on the show tomorrow. That horse that Stephen Marsh told us that we should be backing is Hidden Achiever. That's on Saturday, and he does lie confectionous today in the early part of the meeting in New Zealand. I don't know what race that horse is in. I think it's race four. Today, Matta Matta. What price are we getting there? Pauly Sebastiani is all over it. He doesn't miss a beat, because he is the face of New Zealand racing on Giddy Up. No price at the moment, so we'll have to just sit and wait. No price. No price at the moment, no. Matta Matta today. No price at the moment.
Speaker 5Hidden Achievement is the name of the runner. It's racing around on Saturday, race number four. Gee, it's racing around Saturday. Race number four is the one he told us to keep an eye out for. All right, then. Beautiful. Race four, number five, Hidden Achievement, Matta Matta, jumps at 10.5. Past 11 in the morning, for those who want to have a play. There you go.
Speaker 2Okay, there you go. What was the horse that he liked today? Confectionist. What race is it in? I actually think Jane Ivel's tipping that today for the breakfast bowl of tips. I'm just having a look at the markets now. Confectionist. There you go. $3. Okay. So that's race two, number four, and it's in about 52 minutes' time.
Speaker 5Correct, yep. Jane Ivel made it one of her best of the day on breakfast bowl of tips. You can find that on the Racing New Zealand podcast page.
Speaker 2I tell you what, Dahlia got it. One hell of a roster of stallions, both in Victoria, at Ngambi, or just outside of Ngambi, in the Hunter Valley as well. Diamond was an impressive winner for the Blue Army there in the group two stud stakes. And Lisa Manning, the Victoria nominations manager for Dahlia, joins us here on Giddy Up. Hello to you, Lisa.
Speaker 10Hi, Gareth. How are you?
Speaker 2It's like it must be easy going to work in a way with the stallions that you have in your backyard, both in Victoria, and New South Wales.
Speaker 10Yeah, it does certainly make it a little bit easier when the stallions are, when we've got a roster this strong. And yeah, it's a great lineup we've got this year. And you know, it takes a lot of hard work to get there. A lot of, a lot of stallions that don't make it, but at the moment we're doing a, you know, we've got a great, a great lineup, which is fantastic. You don't need to, you
Speaker 2don't, yeah, well, you don't need to market Animo anymore. I've never seen a horse. He's had so much raps on him like Animo has had to kick off his stallion career. And I guess he was the talk of the sales ring in the early part of the year. Everybody wanted an Animo. He was the first season sire that set the sales auditorium alight. But then you reckon, like, it doesn't matter what they were going for in the ring and they looked the type and his records, his record speaks for itself. He was a brilliant two year old. He should have won a slipper. And then he, he won. He went on to do what he did as an older horse, being a Cox plate champ, a Guineas winner, but you need to see his progeny do it on the track. How much of a smile did that put on the faces there of the people up the top there at Dali, including yourself when they saw those first set of trials in Sydney recently?
Speaker 10Yeah, it was pretty exciting, Gareth. We, you know, it's always, it's always nerve wracking when you've got first season sires, you know, run with runners in two year old trials. So, um, and you just hope you actually have a few in those early ones. And, um, yeah, Animo, you know, look, as you said, he's an amazing horse. He was an amazing racehorse. He's a beautiful stallion and he's been so well supported. So it's just brilliant that he's, um, you know, he's, he's made such a great start. Um, and fingers crossed, you know, he's got the two in the breeders and the gym crack. So fingers crossed for them. Um, hopefully he can, he can get a winner or even a stakes placing at this stage. Would. But, um, yeah, it's, you know, and obviously we, we've got a few in our stables and they really liked them. And, you know, the word on the street is that they're just very easy to train. Good temperaments, lovely types, which obviously we know. Um, and hopefully they can run.
Speaker 2Yeah. And it looks like they can run. And, um, I think people forget, like he was a superstar, middle distance horses and all the horse, and obviously the team there kept him in training with James Cummings, but he was a pretty early two year old as well. So has it. Surprised you really, that he's been able to produce two year olds who are up nice and early.
Speaker 10I don't think it's a surprise, but it's always, you know, it's, it's always nerve wracking at this time of year. Whilst he was a brilliant two year old, you know, he did, he wasn't, he, when you look at him, he's not, he's not a typical two year old type, um, physically. So, you know, you never know what they're going to produce. I mean, you get the likes of, um, you know, horses like. Piero or those sorts of horse, you know, he was a champion. Piero, but he, you know, he, he gets, you know, three year olds and beyond as a rule. Whereas, you know, so you just don't know what you're going to get, but, um, we're all, you're always hopeful and animals certainly, he couldn't be going any better at this stage, so we're, we're very happy.
Speaker 2Another one of your superstar stones is you don't need to market because he's record is, um, is pretty good. He's too darn hot. Um, and when weeks goes to you, you've probably done your job, really, you know, that you're going pretty well.
Speaker 10Yeah. He's, um, he's flying. Too darn hot. You know, the book, the book that he covered last year was just absolutely elite, um, you know, the, the falls on the ground that he's got at the moment, you know, he's actually got a half to, um, cylinder and diameter. Okay. Uh, just being born, uh, a cult, which is fantastic, gorgeous horse. And then obviously the Winx Philly, who is just, you know, she's outstanding. Um, as I said, the best fall she's had so far. Um, but you know, he, his book last year was just, it was so good. But it's just getting, it's gotten better. Um, over the, you know, the last six months with this, you know, or even with this, the spring, um, the horses that he covered last year, those mayors, a lot of those mayors have had good pedigree updates, um, you know, he covered the likes of, well, he's covered the dam of observer, Jolie star, um, Ted Tyrus, Attica, um, the list goes on blue door, natural fling, transatlantic.
Speaker 2So, um, he's going to have some, yeah, there's going to be some pretty handy siblings that are. Halves to, um, um, some great horses that are by too darn hot. So why do you think that all of these big studs with their best mares are going to this, this stallion?
Speaker 10Well, he's obviously, you know, he, I mean, he went to start with a huge record, um, as a, as a racehorse and a, and a massive pedigree and, you know, Dubawi, you know, he's, he's one of the best Danes in the world. So to get our hands on a horse like him was just, you know, you know, we were all over the moon, um, and then, you know, and, and other breeders are obviously just aware that he's just such a nice, he's just such a, got a great pedigree, got a great physique, got a great race record, you know, they don't get much better. Um, so he, you know, he, he obviously got a lot of good followers early days, but last year's, you know, you know, his fee went up to 250,000. Um, so obviously you're going to get the best of the best, um, and you know, he's producing the best at this stage. So hopefully you can go on with it. I mean, Bangkok hotties running as one of the favorites in the flight, um, under focus was third in the golden Rose. So hopefully, you know, there's a lot to come for him yet. And, you know, with having that quality book last year as well, he's, he's, he's on the app. Yeah.
Speaker 2One of our favorite horses on giddy upper cylinder. Now, um, James Cummings used to have the drive and we still don't know who the driver's name is, but we did a future show and we gave him a call. And he tipped a cylinder at 60 to one. It was nearly one of the greatest. If he won that calm golden slip of that day, it would have been probably giddy ups, greatest ever triumph really. Um, and he was so brave. He finished second, of course. Um, but then he won a new market down the straight when he flashed down the outside and he's at stud at the moment. And my mail is that his first yearlings, um, are getting the big tick. Now I think we're going to see. Uh, a lot of the cylinders at the magic millions in January. What are you hearing? I know you can't really like, uh, I'm hearing good things, Lisa. Um, so I can't wait to see his progeny at the sales.
Speaker 10Yeah. He's, you know, he's a very exciting horse, obviously with the pedigree he's got and the race record, um, but he's physique, you know, he's one of, he's one of the best looking horses you'll look at, particularly, you know, when you're looking at those, you know, you're, you're looking at those elite. two-year-olds, he's just so typical and he's stamping his stock just like himself and i mean talking to the sales companies i mean obviously we've seen a lot of them but now that the sales companies have been out and about looking at all the yearlings wanting to go to sales next year they are just you know they're raving about them you know just he's just throwing consistent good strong physical types which obviously bodes well for the sales ring yeah
Speaker 2and he's the half brother of course that diameter who won there on sunday the stud stakes he's going to be hard to beat in a corfield guineas but he's by a very underrated siren brazen bow and i know that this all means a lot to see waller because diamond of course trained by sea waller but he also looked after brazen bow
Speaker 10yeah absolutely um he you know he he's a he's a horse that obviously was a very good two-year-old yeah but um and you know loves the mile and you know now looks like he's really going to hit his straps at three and you know that mile that mile sort of distance really suits him and i know chris has got a huge opinion of him so fingers crossed for the corfield guineas um but yeah brazen yeah he's he's a favorite of all of us to be honest he's a he's a he can get you a really good two-year-old um he's he gets a mare going he's proven he's commercial he's at a really really value value fee we think um and you know he sits there with um you know two down hot zoo star and written tycoon on five five percent stakes two-year-old stakes winners to runners so you know that's a huge achievement for a horse that doesn't have the number of runners um necessarily because of his he's had noted fertility issues over the journey but you know he's he's a very good stand to get your mare away yeah um and for a horse that's got not the numbers of the likes of you know he's got half the numbers of written tycoon and the same amount of stakes winning two-year-olds so um on percentage so yeah he's he's a great option for breeders you've got a young mare she's a great he's a great one to get them away i tell you that's
Speaker 2also a great option is pinniturbo now he was one of my favorite sprinters when he was trained up there in europe but are you surprised that he might be producing
Speaker 10derby horses um well again actually he's a good example of what we were talking about earlier he's you know it's not surprising um you know shambadal himself obviously is a sire of pinniturbo and he was a miler um and pinniturbo whilst he was he was he was he was a sire of pinniturbo um and he was a sire of pinniturbo an excellent champion champion two-year-old and three-year-old he just he's got the pedigree he's got a staying pedigree if you have a good look at it it's it's all staying blood so it's not necessarily surprising um it was good to see him get some nice two-year-olds early but um it's interesting because a lot of the trainers are telling us that they're you know more three-year-old and beyond which is obviously where where that's coming uh now we've got global global goal as again a favorite in the flight stakes and zambales is hopefully going to come back and you know he was such a consistent good two-year-old um but yeah that i think it's not it's not surprising but it's
Speaker 2not no and i reckon um i just forgot that horse's name it raced i think it was last saturday at cool field um one of um trent buston's shouldn't have won icu um i reckon that'll be competitive in the derby trent was funny guys i went to the magic millions i went to buy a magic millions winner a two-year-old classic winner and i bought a derby winner so there's no rules in this beautiful game there's absolutely no rules and um observe obviously he's the son of gareth he was your superstar three-year-old um but he's had a small hiccup to kick off his stallion career um i think he had a colic attack is he okay now how's his recovery going
Speaker 10yeah he's he's going well gareth thank you um he's unfortunately not a great way to start off the first season so i but luckily it was a it was as far as colleagues go uh you know horses that have had to have surgery it was a very you know it was a quick surgery he's made a really he's making a really good recovery um he hopefully will be back covering mares again in in november um all going well uh however obviously you do miss you do miss a month in october or you know a month and a bit but he had covered um a number of bears and his fertility was exceptional so that was the that's a positive and you know there's plenty of horse people that are looking to cover mares in november so hopefully he'll get a good look at it again
Speaker 2being a son of garth let's hope he can do a job i think for the australian breeding industry especially hopefully maybe siring a few of the star um staying prospects there in the next three to four years um what a what a roster you have bivouac brazen bow broadsiding cylinder gayeth harry angel's doing a job i reckon he would have been proud of angel capital his son's been through a little bit he's had his few knockers but he stood up and was counted for the other day in the serupa clark um the horse that got scratched out of the barriers there that everyone remembers traffic ward and they tell me he's gonna um have one hell of a career at studs saying pinto turbo paleli so what a roster you have there um so if you want to get involved with any of your stallions how do we go about it
Speaker 10lisa uh well you can ring any member of the noms team we're all on the website so um or you can um you know send it send through a request on the website or yeah basically just get in touch with one of us it's pretty simple send your mare
Speaker 2and you can help them get to the right stallion that you think that um might work for for their particular mare good luck trying to get into one mo but you never know your luck show me the money show me the money all right good on you lisa thanks for joining us we appreciate you coming on giddy up and um good luck for the rest of the breeding season

Speaker 11uh we've got some pretty high winds at the moment we've had them for the last sort of four or five days so it's been pretty tough watering yeah um but yeah nah we'll uh we've yeah i reckon most likely we'll probably see an upgrade with the 24k winds okay
Speaker 2will they play so what's it what's the northerly mean there for bellarat so what um will that advantage leaders or do you need a little bit of cover yeah
Speaker 11probably a little bit of cover around the side so be headwind down at the 600 and then it'll come across them in the straight for 400 meters so um yeah a little bit of cover and then yeah get out yeah good
Speaker 2field stay looking forward to this meeting mate we wish you the best of luck yep no worries thanks gav good on you ben harris there looking after the bellarat track um let's welcome in the team benny kaluzi joins us here for bag of tips to preview this bellarat meeting hello to you benny oh gee how are you mate i'm very well mate and miles fitzner joins us g'day milo
Speaker 12hello g hello benny and hello to the listeners um interesting
Speaker 2to see how this track plays it's a beautiful track ballarat big spacious track but it will be firm um obviously with those northerly winds just above 20ks milo it's going to be interesting to see the pattern early doors
Speaker 12yeah it certainly will be you want to keep an eye on it and look we've noticed again this morning the scratching of a few horses one of them notably in kingsbury which i did like which has been scratched this morning so there are a few scratchings to get through but um hopefully you can see a pattern emerge you know bellarat bendigo those sort of tracks they're really good to get at normally so just wait and have a bit of a look and then you can apply your bets with confidence clint
Speaker 2mcdonald obviously scratched a few of his horses today and most of them were in the market so the percentages have changed since we were chatting yesterday milo the first race is a maiden for the three-year-old phillies scratch five six and seven
Speaker 13here benny kaluzi semantics has been backed all week he's now our even money favorite from a real house good money for this runner uh just this morning on debut three dollars twenty scoville is eight dollars an egyptian dancer nine dollars as
Speaker 12mentioned yesterday g man uh really good race between two horses here i've got a lot of time for in semantics and aroused i've got semantics just on top uh only for the reason of one race experience and that was that run at sand down behind divine dot and stars of don So Semantic's on top with a bit of a bet. Really keen to see this arouse from Go Day. This little filly of Graham Beggs with Geordie Childs in the saddle cost a bomb, obviously, and hopefully their place is horse well. So I'm 10-1 outside of that. The two Egyptian dancer, I think, is some hope with Damien Lane aboard for Gavin Bedgegood. And then I've added the nine in Scoville on debut for Kieran Marr and Tommy Stockdale. So I'm 10-1, 2-9, but really keen on the 10-1 to be sort of finishing in the sort of 1-2 finishing.
Speaker 2Yeah, a couple of big wraps on those fillies. We did get a good push for Sabrina, who's on debut. She was favourite for the debutant stakes in her two-year-old year, and then obviously has had some issues. So she's at $13. I don't know if Calvin thinks he can beat the dolphin filly, but he reckons that she can run top three. And Uganchark, there's some big wraps on that. Robbie Griffith. Travis, trained galloper as well from the trials. So that's a good little race to kick off proceedings there at Dowling Forest this afternoon. We move on to race two, and it's a maiden plate over the 2000, scratch the three in the emergency. The 16 comes out.
Speaker 13Another big firm here. Expensive taste went up $8 with us on Monday. It's now $4.40. Equal favourite with Tears of Happiness. Ben Malum rides a kilo over here. Courting is $5.50, and Lollies Galore, the other one in single figures,
Speaker 2at $8. If you watch Milo on Friday night with his wine, and wines and winners, he's got expensive taste.
Speaker 12I'm certainly not good at the courting either, Gareth, if you keep watching those as well. That's the way I'm leaning in this race, though. I'm going to stick with the 12, get off, and again, Tony and Calvin and for John McNeil, I think we're getting a reasonable price about it. I've got it to beat expensive taste, so 12 to beat 13. We're right down the bottom here. The 14 Tears of Happiness, drawn poorly. I've got that in the run third. And I did have a little bit of time. Four at the two in Lollies Galore for Pete Moody and Kev Coleman. 12, 13, 14, and two, the numbers there.
Speaker 2The maiden over the 1,400 metres is race three. A few scratchings here. The two, four, six, seven, and ten. So some horses that were right in the market come out here, Ben.
Speaker 13Yeah, $0.28 of deductions here, so plenty of them. Full confidence. Punters are fully confident here. $3.20 from Braemar Hill, $5. So Royal, $5.50, our debutant. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. And we've got panty-panty tens.
Speaker 2I don't know if he was playing it down or not, Kelvin, today. But he goes, wide gates, a little concerned. But the scratchings help his cause. I know the emergencies come into play as well. But I know you were keen on this filly still, Milo. Full confidence. Oh, yeah.
Speaker 12And I've been filled full of confidence with the scratching of hedge yet. I thought that was the only horse that could get it. Look, $2.90 or $2.00, $3.00, I think Benny said, is close enough to a pretty good price. So it is one of the better bets of the day. And we should have a good look by then. As to whether or not these horses with cover can still run on. So $11.00, full confidence, one of the better ones of the day. I think Braemar Hill for Phillip and Tommy Stokes can run into second. I then included the $13.00 and the $14.00. But look, once the scratching of hedge yet happened here, I couldn't have been more excited. So this will be one of the better bets of the day, the $11.00, full confidence.
Speaker 2Full confidence, Miles, is exactly that. In the third race there at Ballarat. Benchmark 62, $1,400. Scratch the 2, 4, 5, 6 and 7 here, Benny Caluzzi.
Speaker 13Which leaves Perfect Knight quite short here at $2.50. Plenty of deductions yet again. Venetian Choice, $4.60. Even despite those deductions, this is a big firm. Went up $13.00 on Monday. Miscellaneous $5.50. And Celestial Splendour is $9.00.
Speaker 12Once Kingsbury came out of this race, I was sort of scratching around to try to find a few. Because I had it clearly on top. Look, I've ended up landing. Landing with the $9.00 on top here in front of the one comic hero. I think with the clone here for the Cunninghams, I think can run a good race. I ended up $9.00, $1.00, $12.00 and $8.00. But look, with the scratching of Kingsbury there, it probably wasn't a race I was diving into regular going to stall.
Speaker 2So $9.00, $1.00, $12.00 and $8.00 in the fourth race for Miles. We're going to take a break here. This is our preview of Ballarat this Wednesday in Victoria. On the other side of it, we'll have a look at the quadileks.
Speaker 1This is Giddy Up.
Speaker 2All thanks to Bet365, Benny Caluzzi, Gareth Hall and Miles Fitzner with you as we preview, of course, this meeting at Ballarat. This is the shortest price favourite of the day coming up in the Benchmark 66 over a mile. You, son. Trained by Warwick. Waterhouse and Bot. No scratchings to report here, Benny.
Speaker 13Yeah, I was going to go with you, son. You, son. You, son. You, son. Who cares? It's the best back runner of the entire day. That's what matters. It's into $1.90. The punters are smashing the $2.10 bet boost. Crocodile has been a slight drifter because of that. $4. Jenny, you think $7.50. Nick's choice, $17. But I thought this was one of the better races of the day. Just checking on Milo there. You OK, brother?
Speaker 12Yeah, no, I'm going OK here, my friend. I'm sitting up the top of a hill here before a sheep auction in the middle of New South Wales. So I'm going all right, my friend. Hey, this race is fascinating. I want to take on Yasun. Now, this is Gate 12 with sort of 20 to 27 kilometre an hour winds. This is a horse that's got to do work early, bowl along in front. It'll have wind in its side pretty much the entire time. And Geordie's not going to have much of an option other than to roll forward. Now, can it win? Of course it can. But at $1.85, it can win without me. Now, I did tweet the pride of Jenny. to see if I could get any
Speaker 2mail on Jenny,
Speaker 12you think. I've got a tweet back saying you can tell him when he said Jenny would never win another race. That's what I think of that. So that was good to answer there from Tony. I'm still with Jenny, you think. I've got the 11 on top here in front of Crocodile. I think Crocodile's been going pretty well without winning. I think the team even know that this horse is putting up some pretty good numbers behind the scenes. So it's been knocking on the door. So I've gone 11, 9, 5, and 10 easy done. But I'll only be having two or three in this leg of the quaddie.
Speaker 2Race 6, 1,200 metres. A heap of scratchings here. Unfortunately, we don't get to see a few of these horses that we're eager to see, including Moana Spirit, the 1, the 4 High Falls, the 5 Turbo Saints, Shepardos, the 11, and then the 14 and 15, the two Emergencies come out here, Benny.
Speaker 13This has been a huge go for Cavill Avenue out of the Mayor Devious Maid, which is well named. Yeah. Entered $2.90. It was $5 after scratchings this morning. Handy is $5. Mull of Kintar, also $5. And Wonderful Sky, $7.50. But they are keen on the 9.
Speaker 12Yeah. And some of that money is mine, Benny. I've had a crack here. Cavill Avenue as well from day to day. I just think one with the wind and the map, it's perfect. As mentioned to you yesterday in the midweek masterclass, this is a really, really good race. This is going to be a form race going forward. I've got Cavill Avenue to 9 in front of the 8 Handy, and I've got some time for the 2 in a gold, and then the 6 Wonderful Sky. So I've got 9, 8, 2, 6 with the 9 being an on-topper and a bet.
Speaker 29, 8, 2, 6 for Milo and race 6. We move to race 7, and you can scratch the 3, 5, 10, and 11 here. This is the benchmark 66 over the 1,200.
Speaker 13And these cars will be looking to go back to back with Aurora Bell unbeaten. She is our $2.60 favorite from Corrito, $3.20 back from a spell. Sulek is $4.60. Sulek is $4.60. Sulek is $4.80. And Storm Bender, $7.50. Another good race.
Speaker 12As both of you would know, I'm really keen to back these colors when they come to Australia. You don't let them down, do you?
Speaker 2You're their biggest fan, the punt rate syndicate, Milo.
Speaker 12Kind of found cruiserweight before anybody else did when we got $4 at Swan Hill. And then everyone wanted to jump aboard the bandwagon. Look, I'm taking. Are you still aboard that bandwagon, Milo? Absolutely. Absolutely. Don't get off. I've got Sulek on top here, though. I don't think. I don't think Cadillac will win the race before, but Aurora Bell's in it. Just from that draw, I'm just sort of tad sticky. When you go back and look at a couple of these races, too, this horse has got serious ability, Aurora Bell. But I just wonder whether or not from that draw with Ethan Brown, how this race maps out, whether or not cover's going to be available nice and early. And I think this horse needs it. So I've gone $4, $6, $9, and $8 in this league of the quaddie, but I'm only using $4 and $6. So Sulek and Aurora. But I'll read that to you shortly. But my numbers here, $4, $6, $9, and $8. No bet, though, because I don't want to think I'm going to face if Aurora Bell comes out and pounces them.
Speaker 2And then race number eight, $6, $8, $9, $14, and $16 are the scratchings in this Benchmark
Speaker 1366. And YOLO got the big confidence-boosting win last time around. $3.80 has been firm all week. Bold Bordeaux, $4.20, gets the shades on first time from Gina's A Star 550, and Hotspur Real is $6.
Speaker 12Really good race to finish the day. Pretty keen on Bold Bordeaux, the topping here for Benny Allen. Again, one that draws low, getting a reasonable price about it. So I've gone with one to beat the 10 here. Gina's A Star. Now, Gareth, this is a horse I've tipped you nearly at double figures. Yes. Last time on the golf course of Mitch Freeman to get disrespected in the market again. Another horse that's drawn low. One, 10, 12, and 4 to finish. But you could probably have a bet on Bold Bordeaux and Gina's A Star. A bit of a dutchie there to finish.
Speaker 2Best bets, Milo?
Speaker 12Best bets, race three, number 11, full confidence. Race six, number nine. cattle avenue and then look you can have a nibble race one number 10 semantics in the first but i just sort of want to maybe see uh some of these conditions before i'm really diving in so they're the three best value of the day race five number 11 jenny you
Speaker 2think um and what about a quaddie
Speaker 12please uh the first leg 11 9 5 second leg 9 8 2 and 6 third leg 4 and 6 and we come home 1 10 4 and 11 that's one hell
Speaker 2of a preview from you today milo on top of the hill i appreciate it you have a great day and we'll catch up with you later in the week
Speaker 12so chat later boys there's
Speaker 2miles fitzer their fields are out benny we've got the fields out for um ran week on saturday you so we had two of the group ones that were out there yesterday what have we got here the midway handicaps a good race you get horses like columbus and those type of horses so they improve the
Speaker 13premier i think we go straight to headwalls drawing then barrier 2 ninja 14 so that's that's an interesting gate 14 and 15 will they go forward will they go back tempters drawn 11 mahuna in 10 cabalas in 7 and mazu will inject some speed in 13 so it's a it's a good race 15 15 horse field the premier so what
Speaker 2we got from a everest perspective here so cabalas is probably on trial headwall's got a slot ninja's got a slot um graft the burners no golden strand no savvy hallie if she performs well finishes in the top three you'll see her in the everest she'll represent mulberry um and plaintiff's an interesting runner low gate was pretty good the other day it'll be interesting to see how plaintiff goes but tempted's got to overcome a bad draw on a big field but she gets back anyway and that turn of foot gets her out of trouble it's
Speaker 13probably not the worst draw in the world for her ninja 14 is not ideal like do they just go back given the everest is the next start or do they chance their arm and go forward potentially risk getting caught wide i'm not sure it was a pretty
Speaker 2good night there the other
Speaker 13day yes i think i think you can be a little bit forgiving of that yeah so
Speaker 2we know the epsom field the metropolitan so afferwolf has accepted for both he's got gate four in the metrop um you're afraid he's buried two solos spain six we know these horses deacon three green spaces barry nine um juja kibo five valiant king one the budgie smuggler 11 piggyback seven at the baskin eights mr monico 12 pinhole on the quick backup 13 still blaze barry number 10 the flight stakes only a small field only about four chances there bangkok hottie striking alibi gold and queen's gamble um what else have we got here the dulcify um it's it's got savagrame he's going around today has he been scratched he's been scratched he's going saturday um and then you've got these two-year-old races that everyone's looking forward to the gym crack um for the two-year-old phillies friedman snowden waterhouse and bot beer baker a shane charlton um and then you've got the breeders plate so michael friedman johnny thompson chris waller bjorn baker nonu will be the favorite after that trial there for the son of animo so we might need
Speaker 13some help from uh dean wattling and uh ganna on friday to unpack those those two races it's a
Speaker 2guessing game let's be honest these two-year-olds on the boo and uh flemington in the fields out just yet no not quite after wolf is he is he
Speaker 13coming to melbourne well i don't think
Speaker 2he wants it wet if the rain look there's 25 and 15 mils it's going to be a lot of rain and it's going to be expected tomorrow and friday yeah and even rain on the day i
Speaker 13hope he stays in sydney i think a lot of futures punters do as well yeah i think the preference is to come to melbourne yeah that's what jules valance was saying he does a bit of work with
Speaker 2maddie smith yeah so there you go hey we'll take a break we'll come back it's 10 38 mark rodent will be joining us to preview the rose hill meeting join the
Speaker 1conversation text us on 0 4 9 7 3 6 7 3 6 live across australia this is giddy up with gareth hall
Speaker 2welcome back to getting up the fields are out for flemington now so they've come out there betty kaluzi they have do you
Speaker 13want to quickly go saddlecloth one half yours barrier 14 sir delius nine light infantryman three cosmic crusader four aliana two beautiful asterix 11 zaran one i hope a wins five middle earth six soul of spain 15 jewel buckaroo eight she's a hustler seven uh saint george 13 deacon 12 kings valley 10 and the big omission there is birdman has not accepted for
Speaker 2the turnbull he's been saved of course for um the mind power under set weights and penalties he's just better off in a mind power even though he's got to run into she's alibi plus the weather i don't think he likes a wet track yeah um so that's going to be a good little race um it is moving day a few of those horses where they like will half yours go to a corfield cup or a cox plate after saturday it's not a kind gate despite the conditions probably suiting the the melbourne cup champ come saturday what other races have we got here um you've got the gill guy down the straight war machine arkansas kid hedged um smooth chino gets barrier 14 for austin galati that's probably a good barrier for him down the straight king sephir's back barrier 10 in karuna barrier four skybird could get the conditions to suit barrier um we have the bark cummings what's afflewolf he's drawn barrier eight craig williams has been booked to ride there um the dane hill stakes stretton rule of one big sky seven the next episode six elibaba nine zambalis five bugsy two and boobay eight so interesting that zara's chosen the next episode over in boobay doubt time 11 pocket full of cash barrier three natural fling barrier 10 so that's where the speed's going to be and we've got the gill guy down the straight being over excited barrier number four um so it's going to be a terrific meeting looking forward to
Speaker 13it just for the future punters yeah if you can get a price for uh birdman to run a hole next week if you can get dollar 70 dollar 80 out there somewhere i think i think that's gone now isn't it it might be gone now but yeah even a dollar 60 is probably
Speaker 2overs yep i would run run as fast as you can if you can get that um 10 42 mark rodent joins us to preview this rose hill meeting g'day mark
Speaker 14g'day gareth how are you i've done that before i've done that before i've done that before i've done that
Speaker 2before you know tried to get there i remember we backed antino because i thought i did the ring around we thought there'd be three runners in the fiend stakes yeah there was four and he ran fourth um so and he just went down on that occasion but that sums up my my punting life really in a nutshell so yeah dollar 70 dollar right there's simply he should run second oh you should surely um what are you making this rose hill meeting mark
Speaker 14uh i usually love this meeting the spring wednesday at rose hill but it's been knocked around by scratching again there's a lot of small fields yeah and just every
Speaker 2wednesday you just you can't do the form until race day morning well
Speaker 14that's especially in these maidens you know that even even a hundred thousand dollar maiden there's a bunch of scratchings race two's 18 down to six
Speaker 2yeah it's unbelievable really obviously it's just too much money these people got too much money they just keep on training paying up for trading fees and not racing even in a hundred thousand dollar race yeah amazing race one scratch the one two five six seven eight ten eleven nineteen and twenty here benny
Speaker 13they are taking any price yeah g low key a dollar 45 and they just keep betting no matter how short it is i only is six dollars fifty from sapphire legend eight dollars and schnitzel's girl also eight dollars mark yeah oh look i
Speaker 14wouldn't i don't think i'd take a dollar 45 but it's hard to see it getting beaten um it was odd song when it got beaten at kenzo first up but it and thread did dash home in sub 11 or around 11. couldn't see many of the others matching that should get its own lead up to 1400 looks the winner i thought central's girl with jmac on um would sit closer in the run and give us sight iomi is another chance and the first start of sapphire legend got home okay on a trial but hard to go past the nine all
Speaker 2right then so the nine low key we're getting a dollar fifty today but threads has franked that form race number two this is another maiden over the 1200 meters i'm going to give it a try we're going to see if we can get it to the top of the hill we're going to see if we can get it to the bottom of the hill we're going to see if we can get it to the top of the hill we're going to see if we can get it to the bottom of the hill we're going to see if we can get it to the top of the hill we're going to see if we can get it to the bottom of the hill we're going to see if we can get it to the top of the hill we're going to see if we can get it to the top of the hill we're going to see if we can get it to the bottom of the hill we're going to see if we can get it to the top of the hill we're going to see if we can get it to the bottom of the hill He's a good judge when he tips us one. He identified Barracks as the best of the day. So there you go. If that's the lead for the punters out there. 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12. Wait, there's more. 14, 15, 16, and 17.
Speaker 13The scratchings here, Benny Caluzzi. There you go. Plenty of scratchings, but still no deductions here. Oh, sorry. 11 cents of deductions. I thought there wasn't too many. Barracks and Afari, both equal favorites, $2.40 apiece. But Barracks has been clearly the bigger firmer this week. Quarterback, $10. And Gerrion is $10 as well.
Speaker 14Mark? Yeah, look, this is only six, but interesting. I originally, when I first looked at the 18 of them, I thought if Afari gets a run, I might want to be on it at a slightly better price than this. And I was worried about Barracks' first up at $1,200, because he hasn't run past $1,000 in a race, well, at all yet. And his first up at $1,200. But with the field of six and Nash on, he could get control. So I was originally leaning 18. Look, it's not going to be a betting race for me, but I could nearly see Nash controlling this. I don't think they want to lead on a far east of feet and leading a couple of starts to go. So I think two will be in the driver's seat in this race. Eight are in the big danger. Wherever you like after that, 10 in the first starter and 13 shanty next best. But yeah, it does look a two horse race.
Speaker 2So Ma taking on Waller. Waller's got, this is, and Waterhouse and Botter got a run. Shanty won't put pressure on Barracks.
Speaker 14I wouldn't have thought so. I mean, it was on pace at Hawthorne on Dubu, but I don't think they'd want to go too hard.
Speaker 2Yeah. So there you go. You're probably in, when there's small fields and Waller's got multiple runners, you just back the roughy out of his field. So Gary on's probably the play. We move on to race three and you can scratch the one, two,
Speaker 13five and eight here. It leaves Concrete Storm at our $2. $2.60 favorite looking for three in a row from Anthropoid. $4.20. Stallone, $4.80 has been the biggest firmer in this market. Went up $8.50 with us on Monday and Siragosa is $5.50.
Speaker 14Mark? Yeah, going for a little bit of value here. Number three, Oakfield, Utah. I think his country provincial form is just as good as the two down the bottom who lead the market at nine and 10. The knock is he's giving them a fair bit of weight. He's won five out of eight. So his rating's gone up and he's carrying 61. But I like this. He's been at Newcastle last start. There was nothing wrong with it at all. And we're getting much better price than those others in the market. So we'll go with him on top. A little bit speculative, but at the price, happy to be with him. Concrete Storm keeps improving hard to beat. Interesting Stallone's been back. I can sort of see why. It's going to map well with Nash. I thought it was pretty disappointing at Warwick Farm last start. I was giving it a little chance in that race and it was in the right spot and was pretty weak late. Concrete Storm has Stallone form as well, which is another reason I wouldn't want to take $2.60 or whatever it is. Anthropoid, okay, at Kimball. Last start gets J-Mac. I thought Siragusa ran well at Kenzo last start. It had actually been my fourth pick. But Oakfield-Utah are a bit of value in this one.
Speaker 2So I like it. Some each-way play there. An each-way play in race three. Oakfield-Utah for Scotty Singleton and Kieran McEvoy. 3, 10, 7, and 6, the numbers there for Mark Roden. We'll take a break. We'll come back and have a look at the quaddie at Rose Hill this afternoon.
Speaker 1Text us on 04009 736 736.
Speaker 2It's 10 minutes to 11 o'clock. Mark Roden's our special guest doing the Warwick Farm meeting today. And Rose Hill, I should say. I wish we were doing Rose Hill on a Wednesday. It's been one of those days. Benny Clues, he's with me up to race number four. Over the 2,400 metres, benchmark 78, scratch the one and the five here, Benny. You're doing well, Geoff. My team won three Grand Fours.
Speaker 13Yes. I wouldn't be here. Ken Mare Bay, our $2.20 favourite from Golden Century, $3. It's been well supported. Country Kilkenny is $5.50 and spends a lot, $6.
Speaker 14Mark? Yeah, not going to reinvent the wheel here. Ken Mare Bay is, looks the solid obvious favourite here. Has a run at 2,400 under its belt now, which I think is going to be important. Been second there to a period, and I sat that race last time out. Golden Century's second pick here is just completely untrustworthy. He ran in the same race. His Ken Mare Bay last start was back and was awful. You could say McDonald gets on. McDonald rode him three starts ago and he ran last, but his best form would win this. So I have no idea what the market's going to do with him. I don't know what to do with him myself. One of the two should win, in my opinion. Three spends a lot for third, and six County Kilkenny for fourth. But yeah, not too much to get enthused about away from the favourite.
Speaker 2All right, then. So two, four, three, and six for the minor placings. We go to race five, second leg of the quaddie, 1,800 metres at Rose Hill Benchmark. 72, scratch the two, seven, and eight. No Savagram, which is unfortunate, Mark, but we'll get a marker here with Benny Caluzzi.
Speaker 13Think it's you, our $3.60 favourite here. You might get a little bit better than that later on today. Hallowed Hall's on the back up, 480 from Aura, $6, and Shinoni is sevens.
Speaker 14Yeah, I think one of the. I mentioned yesterday, Gareth, I like Savagram, and I thought the other chances were think it's you and Hallowed Hall. So down to two main hopes, in my opinion. Now, I think there's a fair bit of market percentage in horses that could be a bit longer. I'm going to think it's you. Pleased to hear Ben say it might get a bit longer later. I'll just back it again. Look, it's won a weaker race last start. There's no doubt about that. But he won by a margin, and he looked pretty stylish doing it. And he's drawn barrier one here. He'll just be behind leader here, I think, getting the absolute run of the race. Number six is a big danger, Hallowed Hall. Anyone who watched the replay of that race, he was very unlucky. He was going to be in the finish until he was checked out with about 100 to go. Then completely switched off. He's a big danger. Could nearly save on him. After that, I'm out to maybe number nine, Aura, who closed off well at Kenzo. First up, and Cryptolema's next best, who should lead. But I do think one of four or six will win.
Speaker 2So four, six, nine, and five in race five. We go to race number six. And this is over the 1,300 metres. Scratch the four, five, seven, 11, 13, 14, and 15 as these benchmark 72 horses go at it here, Ben.
Speaker 13It's not a bad. No BM72, though. Regal Problem, $2.40, looking for three straight from Erdijarj. It's one of the more interesting runners of the day. 4.20 into $3.60 this morning. Live $7 and Miles of Glory $9.
Speaker 14Yeah, I find it hard to get away with Regal Problem. I'm pretty similar to the market, to be honest. This is Regal Problem's first prep for Joe Pride. Two out of two. Ran a really good individual last 200, winning at Kensington last start when she ran down Titania. Look, the knock here, she goes up in weight. There's a few that she makes considerably worse at the weights for that. But she's just completely, you know, spiralling upwards for Joe Pride. And I don't blame the bookmakers for putting her up at such a tight quote. I've got her on top. Erdijarj is the very interesting runner. Obvious danger. Soft trials. McDonald on. Drawn for a very soft run, too. And her form last prep was good enough to be in the finish here. So it's the obvious danger. Third, I thought, would be number 12, Outer Lines. Didn't come up last prep. But before that, it's fresh form. And two previous preps was very good. Trials OK should be leader, outside leader here. And Titania Miss, I think, is one you can throw in at odds. She ran Regal Problems about a length two starts ago. Then ran in the Fletcher Mayors race at Newcastle and was outclassed. She can bounce back to mid-weight grade.
Speaker 2So 2.17, 12 and 1. And then we go to the last race, race 7. A few of the connections there weren't happy with you yesterday. Of his favourite. Lord Radlap. I think his
Speaker 14other one will win.
Speaker 2Yeah, there you go. No, no, the young boys, they got a slot in the Kosciuszko. They own this horse. They go, tell Mark that he's dreaming and we'll be winning tomorrow. So there you go. You love it. Benny, what's the market doing? You'll get a better price now. Amarone's not tipping it.
Speaker 13Well, Metallicat, drawn wide, is our $3.80 favourite. Slightly easy this morning, though. Lord Remlap is pretty firm. $4.00 gets a nice draw from Barrier 2, looking to remain unbeaten. Snack bar, $6.50. And Santana is $8.00.
Speaker 14Yeah, well, I'm going to have to stick to my guns and leave it out of my top four now. Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, look, it can win. It's drawn for a soft run. I just think, as I said yesterday, two narrow wins in a highway. It's not the sort of form line that excites me, but it keeps winning. So it's all the best to him. Look, number nine starts Santana at odds. I've got on top. Yeah, look, I think it's going to get a very nice run, but high on the speed. Its form last prep was good enough for this. The one that. I might be completely wrong about, apart from Lord Remlap, is number 11, Duke of Arrakis. First up last time, it ran third behind Napoleonic and Ohopi, who are, like, grades above this level. Yeah. Well, not great after that, to be fair, but it has been gelded since. And, look, it's probably midfield in hopefully a fast pace. It gets a chance of $26 or something. Yeah. And completely unfancy. No one's backed it yet. So I could be very right or very wrong there, just throwing it in for second. Metallic Cat, oh, expected drift a bit. I think it's probably got the strongest overall form in the race, but brawn 13 and speed inside, it's going to need a bit of luck. Snack Bar, ultra consistent, gets a soft run again. Should be a place chance at least. And, yeah, number one Lord Remlap.
Speaker 2Yeah, we'll have to put that in the quaddie. But nine and 11, each way plays their Santana and Duke of Arrakis. Well done to Steve. Stephen Marsh, confectioner, getting the job done there in New Zealand, the second race. So you know when we didn't have Sky Racing, went up here today, so gets the chocolates, confectioner. So well done to Marsh. He's already got us a winner on this Wednesday, which is a good start to the day. Hey, don't go anywhere. Mark Ronan will recap his best bets for us, and we'll get a quaddie off Mark as well as we recap that preview there at Rose Hill today. Then after that, we'll continue on Bagging Tips, and we'll find you plenty of winners on this Wednesday across the three codes. This is Giddy Up, all thanks to Brett365. Speaker 2um race seven number 11 so race seven number nine and race seven number 11 race five number three your plays there um and a quaddie mate sure uh first
Speaker 14leg we'll keep it narrow early two and four and uh first leg four and six in the second leg uh one two twelve and seventeen in the third leg and the last leg three four nine eleven with number one in brackets that's up to you whether you want to throw in 100 what was the
Speaker 2first leg again two and four two and four so two four four six one two twelve and seventeen and then three four nine eleven and if you're a fan there of nathan palmer and the lucky partner who owns of course um lord renlap um you can put the one in there as well you'll probably win by three today lord renlap um never been a bigger no yeah good on you brother well you've been in fine form you really have a miss for us on the midweek masterclass so um we appreciate you coming on here mark no problem
Speaker 14at all talk to you soon there's
Speaker 2mark rodent there benny caluzzi what's your best today uh i don't really have one you're staying out you're looking forward to saturday well
Speaker 13a nice little sort of theory i like to follow is a jockey who only has one ride for the meeting adam hieronymus metallic cat the last of rose hill and there's a couple there's a couple there at ballarat as well i think jamie malum only has one on hers the racing preview podcast up tonight yep up tonight looking forward to it so i'm heading the books for the next couple of hours and i'll be uh scouting prices when they come out and
Speaker 2so the team are ready to go you'll have your racing preview multi up tonight or tomorrow uh
Speaker 13tomorrow morning it'll be up how's it been going it's it's positive we're in the positive it's probably profit on turnover about 60 percent that's all right can't can't complain
Speaker 2but it would be nice to get one better we can't miss these days on giddy up with the weekend preview multi in fact we had two bites at the cherry and got them both
Speaker 13yeah plenty of scratching so i think they only paid about two dollars fifty two or sixty each winner's a winner a winner is a winner and lazura three bucks how about that jay she started at dollar 70 and bolted

Speaker 2right there mate what are we doing at doombin today
Speaker 15uh we are going with now we had quite a few scratchings as i mentioned yesterday we could have so we'll go race one number one i think this is the best of them even into peel both runs have been very good as i mentioned wide on debut stuck on really well and then second at eagle farm last time ran on well the end of 1200 so 1350 looks very suitable draws a decent gate for emily posman who's riding well and we'll take three off so race one number one uh race two i generally try and stay out of these distance races but this horse number one super fair he's going well she's going really well at the moment she just loves getting out over a trip uh she was too strong last time at the end of 2040 for iconify they meet again iconify better at the weights but up 200 meters you'd have to say super fair much better placed i think she'll be too strong for them again so race two number one and i'll just throw in this one each way didn't have it in the mix well i actually sort of did but race six number 10 she moves too she caught the eye first up at doom and we did mention her as a black booker a couple of weeks ago behind stanislaus uh usually takes a couple of runs to come to hand but she might be more forward this prep she doesn't step up anything in distance but she draws a good gate for ryan maloney and what got my attention is there's been good money for her so i think we're going to have something each way race six number 10 she moves to for ryan and chris waller so race
Speaker 2one number one race two number one race 10 number 10 race six number six
Speaker 15number 10 yeah six number 10 if there's 10 races i'm in trouble because i only got to

Speaker 2too beautiful just having a look now um race for number 16 dollars no not
Speaker 16lady iris no lady iris
Speaker 2oh sorry 550 550 sorry race for number three i got mixed up lady it's all good money i think yeah 550 that race is in what 54 minutes time what else have you got for us well
Speaker 16i'll go for another track specialist and race six uh top of the page you've got to take on a dawn pop from the steven marsh stable maybe didn't label it a good thing but i think above the clouds he says his best form for cambridge synthetic and i think it's the last meeting for the season so i think you want to go with a bang beautiful so

Speaker 21We've got one tomorrow night. Race three number seven at Kilmore, Soho Playgirl. She was really good first up. Bit plain second up but trainer error. Expecting her to go a hell of a lot better tomorrow night. Good luck.
Speaker 1Thank you. Text us on 0 4 double 9 7 3 6 7 3 6. And they're off.
Speaker 22Jungle Johnny began nicely out in the six. He's charging over. He'll find the front. Tour Galaxy's two lengths away. Second then came Heartstyle Girl. Back behind them Windra or Heart. Then came My Pharaoh Magic Band. A long way back now at Pax Pro. Bostonia. Went 5-4 to the first marker. And he's flying Jungle Johnny. He's eight lengths in front of Tour Galaxy. Followed by Heartstyle Girl and Magic Bandit. The fastest ever to grace this line at Wentworth Park. He's charging home. Is he gonna break the record? Yes! He will!
Speaker 228-8. 28-8 Russell Veitch. Great call that night at Wentworth Park. You had to have a look at the the board once again. Or listen to Russ if you're listening to that call to see if he was right. 28-8. They don't break 29 seconds. The champs haven't been able to do that. But Jungle Johnny did that on that night there at Wentworth Park. And he's now the favorite. He's at $5.50 for the Million Dollar Chase. Mark Gad is his trainer and he joins us now. Mark, hello to you, mate. Thanks for joining us on Giddy Up.
Speaker 23Hello, Gareth. Not a problem at all.
Speaker 2He's a star, isn't he, Jungle Johnny? And to run those type of times, it just beggars belief, really. Yeah, it does.
Speaker 23I. Yeah, it does. I. I haven't had a dog, obviously, as fast as him. He's. He's got a massive motor. He's, you know, the first couple of steps of his races are his worst steps. But after that, when he gets going, he's definitely got a V8 engine.
Speaker 2If it was match racing, there'd be no betting, really, would there? But it's just him trying to get through a field when there's good dogs around him so he gets the opportunity to run the times that he can.
Speaker 23Yeah, that's right. He's. Look, you've got to. To win the big races, you've got to draw good. And you get that luck in your. In running and. And to get that luck, like as I said, you need to draw good. So you get. Well, in saying that, he did draw good on Saturday. Was it Saturday? Yeah, Saturday night in the blacktop and he completely stuffed it. But that's dogs, mate. They are animals and they make mistakes. So. But look, when he does things right and he's drawn good, he's hard to beat.
Speaker 2How do you make sure that, like, you've been a superstar trainer for many years now, but like a lot of people ask me when it comes to greyhound racing, why don't they just jump every start? But how difficult is it for a trainer to make sure that they are on their game each and every start? I guess that's the great challenge for you guys.
Speaker 23Yeah, it is. Especially with a dog like him when they're so fast. He's a dog I'm constantly. I'm constantly working on just. It's a fine line. You've got to keep him fit. But I can't work him too hard. He's got. He's always sort of had wrist problems and he had a toe taken off and he's got a bit of arthritis in that. So you've just got to maintain him well and just try and keep him happy but keep him fit enough at the same time. And that's what I'm trying to do at the moment with him.
Speaker 2So. Yeah. Momentum's a beautiful thing in all sport, but especially in greyhound racing. It's a beautiful thing. Especially in greyhound racing. And if you can get him to fire and go around those track record time, he's what? He's broken four track records in his career so far with a million dollar chase and then into the rich Victorian races, it could be some end to 2026 for you,
Speaker 23mate. Yeah. Well, we're sort of. We're looking to probably pull up stumps at the end of 2026, at the end of this year. So it'd be nice to. I'd love to get him down to Melbourne and draw a good box. I've just sort of drawn car park every time I get down there. And with a dog like him, five seconds down in Melbourne, you've sort of got only shorter runs, five-second runs to the first turn. It's nearly impossible in that grade for him to get over. So. Yeah, but if he. I'd like to sort of get him down to Melbourne and draw inside to show what he can do. So we'll get back down there, maybe for the Top Gun or the. What's the other. The Melbourne Cup we'll be back down for as well, so. Yeah, so. No, he's. Look, he's. The dog's going good. He's going as good as ever, but he's just going to need that little bit of luck and with dogs drawn around him and. Look, I think he's up for a good couple of months in front of us.
Speaker 2Oh, that is exciting, mate. And then how much is an advantage for him, especially with some of the interstate dogs that he's been there, done that? And before he's done that, he's best at Wentworth Park. Yeah, it's a
Speaker 23massive advantage when, you know, whenever the dogs. You know, whenever you've got to travel interstate, it's always a lot harder. So this time, they're coming into our backyard and. Yeah, it's. You know, like, the track's 50 minutes from my house and, you know, he knows the track so well and it really is a massive advantage. So. Yeah. Hopefully, we can use that advantage in the next couple of weeks.
Speaker 2And what would it mean to you, Mark, to train the winner of the final race at Wentworth Park, the Million Dollar Chase?
Speaker 23Oh, it would mean a lot. I sort of haven't even. Yeah, it hasn't even sunk in that Wentworth Park. It won't sort of sink in until I stop going there, I think. I'm sort of just concentrating on what I've got to do. And all of a sudden, you know, that last night will come and we'll race and then we'll never go back. So, yeah, it'll hit me when I'm. Because I've been going there since I was a kid, so basically 40 years. Yeah, basically 40 years I've been going there and it's been headquarters to me for the last 20 years. And yeah, it just. It actually feels really funny. It's hard to explain. But like I said, I don't think it'll hit me until we stop racing there.
Speaker 2Yeah. Why has it been. Why is it such a special place?
Speaker 23Well, it's, you know, it's. We lost Harold Park, I think it was in the 80s. And then this was, you know, when you say city racing, city racing is, you know, in the city and it's the best dogs. And this is the last city track in New South Wales. And just being in the heart of Sydney, it's. Yeah, it's just. I don't know. It's just. So special, yeah. It's just Wentworth Park. But it's. I suppose it's like Moonee Valley, how it was. And, you know, each place is unique in its own way. And Wentworth Park is certainly that. But I think the fact that we'll never have city racing again, just with the way the world is now and, you know, what land's worth in the city, they'll. I think the horses will sort of always stay in the city, but greyhounds will be moved out and the land's worth just. It's just worth too much money. So. But it's like Melbourne, they've got. They're out at the meadows now, which is out a bit further. And that'll happen with us. And New South Wales will get pushed out. And so, yeah, that'll probably be the end of city racing for New South Wales. And it'll. Yeah, I'll definitely miss it. I love the joint.
Speaker 2Yeah. It's got so much history. I think when people, like even in Sydney, living there for the years that I did, it was an iconic venue. Even if you didn't follow greyhound racing, you knew what Wentworth Park was all about. So it'll be a night of celebration there on October 15. Let's hope it's one of the very best million-dollar chases. And you've got the favourite, mate. And don't worry. Have you. Has anyone been on the phone to you regarding a Phoenix slot?
Speaker 23I did. I had. I had a phone call and we're in negotiations, but they didn't end up getting the slot. They were negotiating before they knew.
Speaker 2So what do I need to do, Mark, then? I've got a slot. The Giddy Up family got a slot in the big race, SCN track.
Speaker 23So. Well, you can. You can ring me when you get. When we get off.
Speaker 2100%. I was going to do. I was going to do negotiations on air. But we'll see what we can do. And, yeah, we'd love. If we. And we're lucky, mate. We'll draw box one.
Speaker 23Oh, mate. If you can do that, we'll go a long way.
Speaker 2As long as you promise me you'll be up and firing by the time we get to December.
Speaker 23Yeah, he'll be firing.
Speaker 2All right, brother. Well, I'll give you a call off air anyway. But, hey, don't forget about us anyway.
Speaker 23No, I won't. Definitely not. Thanks, mate. Good on you, Giddy.
Speaker 2Good on you, mate. Mark Gat, the trainer of Jungle Johnny. He's $5.50. He's probably short enough in a million-dollar chase. But if he gets any type of luck, if he draws low, good luck beating him when he can break 29 seconds in that iconic venue. And when you have a look back at the history of. Wentworth Park, all those years. Those great dogs that have competed there. He's the only dog, Jungle Johnny, that's broken 29. 22 minutes past 11, the weekly chase. Jason Adams will be joining me here in the studio. That's next here on Giddy Up.
Speaker 15Time for the weekly chase with Jason Adams and George Ferugia.
Speaker 2Hello to you, Jason Adams.
Speaker 24Great to be back, G. Lots happening. Yes, exciting time.
Speaker 2I need box number one if I get Jungle Johnny. Do you know what? He's a good bloke, Gatty. He is. He's a good bloke. He's sort of like, my problem is I say yes to everybody, which is going to be a concern when I do these negotiations on behalf of Giddy Up and Hutchie.
Speaker 24Yeah, you'll get yourself in the put. But I don't want to boo Santa. No. And even with more pace than him.
Speaker 2Well, you know what? They might go crash bang into that first turn.
Speaker 24Well, then you can't go into the race relying on luck, can you? But you know what? Sometimes you've got to think a little bit differently.
Speaker 2I reckon there's been a few years where you have been looking for box speed, but there's like, and some of those boxes, those dogs haven't jumped as well as we thought that they would. I reckon the start's a little bit more, in a phoenix anyway, with the atmosphere and the noise and the yelling at the start. I reckon the start's a little bit more unreliable than other big group ones, in my humble.
Speaker 24Okay. So you're looking for class, is that what you're trying to suggest? Well, I'm looking for class. Stand up in a big moment? And you know what?
Speaker 2There might be a chance he could fluke the start and the others miss it.
Speaker 24Yeah, potentially. But I mean, in all the big occasions of which he's had to stand up for, he hasn't. And I'm not being. No. I'm not overly critical of him. It's just the way that he races. Yeah. And when he gets to that class, it's bloody hard. It's bloody hard to convert.
Speaker 2But then you, with your argument here to the, or your belief as you bring it, bring something to the table here, then you can't really have wrongly accused, can you?
Speaker 24He's a bit sharper really than Jungle John. Yeah, but he's not.
Speaker 2He's going to need some luck.
Speaker 24No, he can settle second or third. Do you reckon? Yeah. I'm changing my tune on him a little bit. Are you really? I am. I think. I think he's been a bit more consistent in what he's been able to produce
Speaker 2early. Cause there's a few times when he's won like the nationals. He did get luck that day.
Speaker 24Like he had to be brilliant.
Speaker 2He needed to be brilliant, but in the heats, he missed, he didn't get the luck and he was the best run of the night. But, um, and then the final he needed and the luck went his way. And then his ability gets him over the line, but.
Speaker 24You're right. They're very similar operators, but I think by and large, we're going to see a better first split from wrongly accused.
Speaker 2If wrongly accused, you get him for the, the Phoenix and we grew the first people out for the first slot holder out to pick the draw. What draw would you pick for him?
Speaker 24I mean, it's always reliant on who's around you. Of course. But we're the first, ah, look,
Speaker 2he's a difficult dog
Speaker 24to three. Yeah. That's interesting. I wouldn't want to be, wouldn't want to be buried on the rail, but just slightly off. He can make some good decisions from there.
Speaker 2What about jungle? Johnny would be box.
Speaker 24Number one. You want the inside desperately for him? Correct. There you go.
Speaker 2Um, talking about wrongly accused. He was very good. Like I was expected. You would think he'd win a match race with his motor.
Speaker 24Yeah. I mean, it was, it was, it was bank interest in the eyes of a lot of people last week, not only winning his match and, and dashing slay was, was massive in defeat, but to, to, to, to run the time of which he did overall 29, 72, touch up the track record, something fierce. I mean, I don't think many of us are surprised, but we're always in awe of what this bloke is doing at the moment. So you're right. And everything we say about his racing habits, he's got bigger challenges. I think he's going to be a little bit ahead of him, but at least in the format of which was his challenge last week, he dominated. So now it's just a, a free kick into a group one Adelaide cup finals. So he's reliant on draw, but it won't be the deepest races ever seen.
Speaker 2That's for sure. Are you surprised that he's gone the Adelaide cup and
Speaker 24not the million dollar chase? No, I think we've seen this in the past with greyhounds who possibly aren't suited to a Wentworth park with one like him, whereas we're saying he's not going to go to the front in most situations.
Speaker 2He's not a co-blends or a.
Speaker 24He's not a co-blends. Yeah. I think with the million-dollar chase, it opens it up a little bit more to fairy tales with greyhounds that might have fell in their regional final or just lucky to qualify competing on the big stage where the Melbourne Cup's the best of the best. So narratives and quality in either series, there's stacks of them.
Speaker 2Yeah, we're going to take a break. We're going to come back and we're going to have a chat about this dog called Matt Locke. What a story he is. He'll go around in the Bendigo Cup Friday night, Sandown tomorrow night. We'll have some winners there. And we've got a very interesting discussion regarding AI and how AI is assisting form students and greyhound punters in the year 2026. We're talking greyhound racing. We've got the best from the West coming up. Shortly with Darren McCauley. But there's plenty to have a chat about regarding Matt Locke because he is a dog that's come out of retirement and it's like he's never left.
Speaker 24Yeah, he won a Bendigo Cup, Pete, last Friday night and he lines up as one of the favourites. He's Friday after drawing box one. So, look, it's his second start since he came back from retirement and after one start at Tirog and you thought, geez, he hasn't come back like Tony Lockett, has he? But soon enough we found out he was good to go. So he meets a good field on Friday night. He meets Kimi. And he's going to simulate and impetuously who ran one, two in the Emerald at Hillsville not too long ago. So great race that is and that's the Bendigo Cup this Friday night.
Speaker 2Usually you don't get to see dogs like we've seen in a little bit but the dogs that have a successful comeback like Matt Locke has had is remarkable really.
Speaker 24Yeah, it is and I mean I guess when we're dealing with dogs and it's a reflection of how much they love what they do where if they have retired, whether it be him, whether it be Hector Fawley in the last couple of years, they get home and they drive their families. Absolutely berserk. Correct. Not going racing, I'm itching, I need to get out and it's half the reason why some of these do actually come back.
Speaker 2Sandown tomorrow night, do you have a winner for us?
Speaker 24I don't have a winner. I've got a couple of races of interest. So race four, number five, Power Squeeze. He is an absolute beast. He's an X Factor. He makes all sorts of mistakes in his races. So he's fantastic to watch and he has untapped potential as a stayer. So that's race four, number five at Sandown tomorrow night. And the other race of interest is race eight, as well. I think it's Espoir can turn the tables on Whiskey Whiskers. So race eight, number one, and that is a race worth watching as well. With Electrify, a part of that, he went to the Adelaide Match Racing Series last week. He's another with a lot of X Factor. Greg Doyle hasn't really been able to race him as consistently as what he would have liked, but that's going to be a race to watch as well. So six and eight tomorrow at Sandown.
Speaker 2We all know AI is changing the world and I've talked to many punters in all three codes and how they've been able to use it to advantage them. In doing their form, but mainly using years of experience and knowledge and putting them into their AI systems and then just speeding up the way that they do their form in a way. So time-saving as opposed to problem-solving? Well, I think that AI is only as good as the data that you put into it.
Speaker 24And what you tell it to do.
Speaker 2Correct. So it's no good me putting my data into AI and helping me out with how I can go and do my form when it comes to greyhound racing. But if you put it in or Troy Little, for instance, it's going to be more beneficial than what I can provide. But yeah, it's an interesting time and there's a lot of people that have been able to have so much success with the AI and the programs that they've built.
Speaker 24Yeah, and I'm sure there's guys who have been doing it for years in terms of punting on greyhounds and now getting those time efficiencies under their belt. But what I've been seeing through an email inbox at GRV, there has been an amazing, amazing amount of people who don't necessarily have history in the sport who have picked up that they can invest in AI to code programs. And I think given the purity of the form of greyhound racing, I mean, times are times. There's no tempo. There's limited variation in terms of track conditions. So there has been an amazing influx. We're still trying to learn how they've sort of become aware of the potentials in greyhound racing and why they've come to us. But it's a moving beast. So we're keeping one eye on it and learning on the run. So it's going to be an interesting journey.
Speaker 2I guess it'll be a lot easier to put in the times, et cetera, and the different tracks and the boxes and the one-turn, two-turn tracks and all of that data that you put in there and different trainers. And that information, I reckon, will be a lot easier to compile than, say, the other codes. I guess the tricky part about the AI situation with greyhound racing is that whether it tells you if they're jumping, jump left or right, those type of one percenters.
Speaker 24It's funny you say that because we've got the Isolink system. So we don't have total coverage across Victoria. So in basic terms, it's a GPS system. The dogs are wearing a tag. So we've got all that data.
Speaker 2And that can tell you if they're left, right, off the track.
Speaker 24Yeah, absolutely. It's got, I don't know if it's 40 touch points a second. So there's a lot of information.
Speaker 2The bookies won't be able to survive then if you can provide them with all of that information.
Speaker 24Yeah, I know that. But even for the work I'm doing at the moment, I mean, I'm doing it. I'm doing a little bit of it to save time, essentially. They're still dogs. As Mark Gat said before, they're still dogs. I mean, in the end, you can't control them. They can have their bad days, yeah. And you can't buy the read and understanding of which you can have an animal as well.
Speaker 2I've found that it's basically cut my, like, it's different. So as a journalist preparing for Giddy Up, it's cut my preparation time in, not in half, but it's a lot more easier. Like, you can do more now. You can do more in the same amount of time. Yeah. So it should be better at what you do.
Speaker 24Yeah, I wouldn't call it a service, but at least at GIV, since I've been around and prior to that, the people wanting to use API information or form and whatnot for personal use, we've been quite open in allowing that. When it becomes commercial, it's a different conversation. But I guess word has got around and there's been an influx of inquiries. So where this ends up in, say, a year's time, we'll wait and see. But at least it's another avenue to get a younger generation who are across the technology exposed to greyhound racing and all the best parts about it.
Speaker 2We should have an AI tips to every week now on Giddy Up.
Speaker 24We can do that. Probably pretty well set up to start it.
Speaker 2We'll see if they can beat us. Human v. AI. The robot v. Georgie Ferugia. We should do that. Imagine Georgie is a robot. That would be interesting. But anyway. It wouldn't change. No, good on you, Jase. Thanks, G. If you want to multi tonight.
Speaker 24Yes, please. There's a couple of tips at Ballarat. So race four, number eight, Mapunga Phantom is very short, should win. And then race nine, number three, Poor Gusto at Ballarat as well. So the combination for those, around $3. And ideally, they're both very easy watches. Where do you get these programs? Tech messages have come through already. Programs? It's not the programs. You can go to any.
Speaker 2The information from GRV or Watchdog.
Speaker 24Yeah, you can approach us. You can go to a page that's called Race Starts. Data on the GRV website. And it's not open slather. We still need some information about what your intentions are. But yeah, it's clear there's interest around this. And I think it's only a matter of time before the people using it invest further. And the word does spread and everyone wants to get on board. So yeah, all these AI mobs, you can do some awesome things with them at the moment, particularly when it comes to coding. So I think we're just starting to see the beginning of it.
Speaker 2Gee, do a deal with Jungle Johnny and lay off to make it work for everyone. No risk. Currently $7 to win the feeling. So you can't lose. I probably could still lose.
Speaker 24Anyway. You'll find a way, won't you?
Speaker 2Yeah, yes. Good on you, brother. Thanks for that, Jase. Thanks, Jay. There's Jason Adams there. 44 minutes past 11. The best from the West coming up next with Darren McCauley.
Speaker 1This. Is Giddey Up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 2Welcome back to Giddey Up. Don't forget Saturday afternoon. What about this for a lineup on SEN track? Cam Luke will be hosting. You've got the Captain Tags, Campbell Brown and Josh Jenkins. Live trackside from the Kingston Hotel, which is, of course, SEN house these days. So trackside live from SEN house at the Kingston Hotel in Richmond. Everybody is welcome. Brownie's at his best. Tags will be up and firing. JJ's had a wonderful couple of months and so has Cam Luke. So that is one hell of a lineup for Turnbull Stakes Day and Epsom Day. The trackside team to take you through an afternoon. So looking forward to that at the Kingston Hotel in Richmond, which is, of course, SEN house. So trackside live from SEN house at the Kingston Hotel, Richmond this Saturday. And everybody is welcome. Let's get to the best from the West.
Speaker 1Tune in to Racing WA TV. On 7 Plus, your ultimate destination for everything racing in the West. On SEN track, this is the best from the West.
Speaker 2It's been a big 24 hours in racing news in WA, especially Darren McCauley joins us, the voice of WA Racing. Hello to you, Maka.
Speaker 25Yes, good morning to you, Gareth. Nice to join you again. You're certainly not wrong there. It has been a huge 24 hours and it continued again here this morning, it seems. We had a delayed flight. I've only just arrived in Geraldton. there, there was a shoe out here near the airport overnight. The gunman's still on the run. Oh, wow. Someone caught one in the leg. So, yeah, they probably just delayed the flights a little here just until things were in order. So, anyway, we've arrived now and we get the first of the new season of Geraldton Racing underway right here on SEM a little later today and the first of it, 12.54 WA time. But that's only a side issue as to the big news yesterday, which no doubt you've broken in regards to Grant Delano Williams' 12-month disqualification. I think it's come as an absolute shock and a real turn of events for many here within the industry. So, I'm absolutely convinced and I have been led to believe that already there is a stay of proceedings being sought and that they will vigorously contest this at appeal.
Speaker 2So, reading the media release, I think the one, two, three, the fourth point's the interesting one, that although submissions were made with respect to the detection of the substance being due to contamination, the stewards were not satisfied that there was sufficient basis upon which to accept those submissions. Consequently, the inquiry was unable to establish and accept explanation for the detection of the substance and, of course, it goes on previous penalties issued on that other matter. So, the substance was Ritalin, which is a, a medication used for ADHD patients. So, yeah, they believe that they couldn't work out whether it was contamination or not. There wasn't enough evidence, it sounds like, that they could be satisfied, the stewards. That's why they've got the 12-month disqualification.
Speaker 25It surprised me. I was lucky enough to read the report of Dr. Cynthia Cole, clinical professor in veterinary science, one of the world's most eminent, actually, in equine analytics. And has got great regard globally, as I say, one of the most eminent. And the evidence that Dr. Cole presented, I thought was compelling enough to suggest in every sense that this was a case of contamination. And if I can, I'll just quickly paraphrase a little bit of that for you, Gareth, if I've got the opportunity. And when Dr. Cole was asked in regards to the amount, the 0.4 nanograms per milliliter of the drug that was found, which is obviously a by-product of it, she said that she suspected that the contamination, when a sample contains such a small concentration of the drug or its metabolite, there's no logical reason to administer it to a horse when you're finding 0.4 nanograms of this ricklinic acid. And so, as you can see in this image here, this is a sample that was found in the blood sample collected from Starry Heights. It fitted all the indicators that this was a contamination. That was the conclusion that she had drawn. So, given her evidence, given her standing globally, it surprised, I think, me just reading this when the decision was announced yesterday. I was probably one, like many, who had followed the case quite closely. It's 12 months this Saturday since the incident involving Starry Heights. It's been an extraordinary long, drawn-out, for whatever reason, complex hearing. But I would have thought that maybe a sizable fine would have been the way that they would have gone. But they've deemed not to have seen it that way, the stewards. One of the senior stewards asked me my view on it earlier this morning at the airport. And I gave him my view. I don't think that he was expecting the view that I gave, because I think the stewards are convinced that they've gone the right way with this. And so now it will be left up to another judiciary there in terms of the appeal, the staff proceedings to come. Because the ramifications of this, Gareth, really, as you would know, and every other horse trainer would know, are huge when you're operating a stable of this size and scope and success with the volume of the owners and the staff and everything that goes with that. 12 months. It's going to have extraordinary ramifications for the Williams, team and them personally, no doubt.
Speaker 2And do you know what? After all of this, Darren McCauley, the most important part of racing is integrity. If you've got no integrity, then you haven't got a sport because punters need to be confident when they bet on this product that they're confident that they're betting in a level playing field. So I want to make that clear. But just like 12 months of qualifications, obviously, they think that there's more into it than the stewards and contamination.
Speaker 25Yeah, that's exactly how I would have read that too, Gareth. I think that point you've made there. Maybe there is something else that we're unaware of. I'm certainly not aware of it. I mean, there's always the stories, the scuttlebutt, the rumour. And there'll be some that say that the stewards got this right. You know, there would be many that would think that there are probably just as many or more think that maybe it's a very, very strong penalty given the case in Tasmania, which involved a very, well, a similar circumstance and a modest fine was meted out for that. So given the amount of the metabolite found and the fact that the conclusive evidence from the equine analytical expert, Dr. Cynthia Cole, suggests that this is not much more than contamination, had no effect on the horse's performance. Most would argue that maybe a heavy fine meted out would have been the more appropriate penalty. It's cost an absolute fortune at this stage.
Speaker 2We're running out of time, Colby. I think there's heaps of text messages coming through saying they pleaded guilty, Gareth. There's a massive difference between pleading guilty to presentation because they couldn't really argue that because the horse did have an illegal substance in its blood compared to pleading guilty to administration. So there's a massive difference. There's a massive difference there. Oh, there is. Absolutely. And we have instructed our legal counsel to immediately take the necessary steps. This is a letter from Grant and Alana to their owners to appeal this decision. We'll also be seeking a stay of the disqualification pending the determination of that appeal. So I think that they won't have runners this weekend, but they're hoping that they can get this stay and they'll have runners the week after. And then listening to Team Williams, they're pretty confident that they would be able to get this disqualification upheld. So it's going to be an interesting time because it's such a massive ramifications for the sport in WA. They are the leading stable and they've got some of the best horses in their barn heading towards the carnival. William Pike will be back in Melbourne. Austin Galati as well. Smoochino goes around down the straight. And Cosmic Crusader, can he win a Turnbull?
Speaker 25I thought he was given a beautiful ride by William. He did really well the other day in the Underwood and got beaten by a better one on the day. You know, of course he can win the Turnbull. But, you know, he needs to find an extra length or so and it'll get harder and harder digging deeper into the spring, I'm sure. But he is an undeniable chance once again. We've got a huge few days coming up here, Gareth. Of course, the running of the time on Hannon's Handicap tomorrow starts the two major days of the round. The big luncheon, Peter Moody, guest speaker, with the irrepressible Mickey D, lightening everyone's life up a little bit. And then, of course, the million-dollar Golden Saddle, just waiting for that final field to come through here this morning and the Calgary Cup, which will be like more or less a rerun of the Coolgardie, the Boulder Cups there, where the Jester Sun Opportunistic will no doubt go toe-to-toe once again. So that's about as much as we can look forward to. It's a lot going on. All the good three-year-olds headed back to the trials yesterday. There's some outstanding trials there. It sets it up for an extraordinary early part of the spring with these three-year-olds on return in the next couple of weeks at Ascot in the Max Simmons Classic.
Speaker 2Any winners today? Colbert got about 30 seconds.
Speaker 25Right-o, I'll give you one here. Race one, number two. This is a difficult day there. A lot of horses burst up. No barrier trial. I'm speculating. Prince Eppelet, race one, number two. Race four, number seven. Have a little look at a horse called Anderschein, about $7 this morning. Race seven, number five. I thought if she could lead, $10 was pretty appealing. Pat's last. Bang from the stable. A good mate, old elbow bender, Ash Mailey.
Speaker 2We try to get on to Ash, no answer. Tell him, what are you doing, Ash? I'll have to read him a little later on. I'll see him there. Hey, Cobb, get me some crayfish, please. That would be much appreciated. How many would you like? Two or three. No worries at all. I promised I would have mentioned the grand final. I wouldn't do that to me, old Cobb, because he'll hang up on me. So on that note, I'd love to give you a hug, brother. I'd love to give you a hug.
Speaker 25See you. Bye.
Speaker 2See you. You know, McCauley, he's already banned three mates. He says, I'll never talk to them again after they sent messages straight after the grand final. Thanks for your company. I'll catch you again tomorrow.

FAQs

The National Tote is a unified betting pool for Australian racing. It will have a soft launch on Friday and a hard launch on Saturday.

Punters can expect greater price stability, more competitive pricing, and deeper liquidity. Existing Tabcorp accounts will work seamlessly across states.

Win and place takeout rates have decreased by 0.5%, while some exotic bets have increased by 0.5% and others decreased by up to 5%. Rates will be reviewed regularly.

The National Tote is expected to significantly improve liquidity and price stability for greyhound and harness meetings, making them more competitive.

The Cox Plate faces tough competition from other global races like the Arc and Japan Cup, and the long travel and quarantine requirements make it less attractive for connections.

Around eight or nine international runners are expected this year, which is considered a good number for the race.
