Speaker 3how's things well
Speaker 2thank you um there's always a bit happening at this time of the year i see your brother's horse wine dark sea gallop this morning with damien lane aboard so um we're just waiting a decision you might know um if they're going to go to the melbourne cup or not he's passed all these scans they tell me i think they're going i'd yeah i don't know i think they are going yeah hopefully i think harry
Speaker 3harry just called me um asking me about uh flights oh so he's definitely
Speaker 2going that's good news wine dark sea he's just coming for a holiday yes well he might want to watch satana glow when the cool more stud stakes she's flying at the moment that cara why
Speaker 3she just said i'll watch her win yeah
Speaker 2well he doesn't want to come and watch her lose does he um you've got gate four betty mellum you're happy with the gate first of all
Speaker 3the gate's probably a hard one to really assess in the day um naturally you probably always favor drawing a bit higher um and the speed looks to be there but in saying that as i said you don't really know today do you and the positives of her she said two goes down the straight so she's pretty good so i'm going to have to wait and see what happens but i'm going to have to be accustomed uh to that racing whereas you know she's not like it's a first
Speaker 2time down the straight yeah um how is she trained on after that devastating victory in sydney defeating um paradox him it was a real match race i know paradox him didn't finish second on that day but she was brilliant off that hot
Speaker 3tempo yeah uh no she's she's been you know had a really good preparation and we feel the sort of right prep to land on this day um in the best form possible so yeah i've been very happy with the work that finished her off her gallop yesterday morning and if anything felt like she'd come on again so yeah we're looking forward to the weekend
Speaker 2poor old zach he should be riding her really
Speaker 3yeah he's been messed i don't want to say he's
Speaker 2been messed around no he's been messed around he should have been like he had that right and well written obviously he didn't go to plan there and then he was booked throughout that car there on golden eagle day and then obviously jamie gets suspended and the opportunity comes up again but i guess that's racing sometimes it's a business these days and you gotta sometimes it's going to go your way and sometimes it
Speaker 3isn't that's right um i think you know he he he probably did the right thing of retaining his bookings i think some of them have fallen away um which probably frustrates him but um he's a he's a team player and he'll be back in the saddle one day
Speaker 2mcdonald wouldn't have kept his booking
Speaker 3yeah exactly he
Speaker 2would have said i'm off to flemington well
Speaker 3i think zach's biggest problems at the moment is uh he he he can he's getting a lot of offers and um he sort of feels entitled to try and satisfy everyone which he's not going to be able to um so i said to him the other day
Speaker 2it's a good problem yeah um and so what about if the rain comes uh look
Speaker 3well she's had two two goes on the wet uh soft seven at warwick farm where she won very well and then she won down the straight on a heavy eight as a two-year-old obviously those are probably the two weakest races she's contested um but she you know handled it well enough um looks like she flies on the on the dry as well so yeah um difficult to know probably her best performances have been on the dry but she hasn't really had an opportunity on a wet track to put in a performance like
Speaker 2that and just going back to the jockey geez benny mellon he's a he's a great fellow like you're not losing much there if anything because he's one of the best big-time riders going around b mellon
Speaker 3he's he's fantastic in these races yeah very good straight rider we've got absolutely no issues yeah he
Speaker 2walks the track he knows where to go yeah he's a greater he's a great booking for the philly um who do you think the horse the beat is
Speaker 3um probably naturally the the next episode um particularly if the rain came yeah um but i think you've got to respect uh chris's horse he's got a good good sort of sense of timing um with these races and um i know james a bit of confidence about him has she
Speaker 2surprised you how good she's become
Speaker 3um i guess we knew she was probably a stakes level pretty early and then she's just kept raising the bar um she's got a tremendous uh mentality that's probably you know help helps her you know you can switch her off in a race very easy you can switch her on very easily she's versatile um travels very well touch wood and uh you know she's just sort of that sort of complete package i guess and
Speaker 2with paradoxing him in the race it usually means it's going to be a a high pressure 1200 meters but as john o'shea i remember him having a chat to us at the start of her preparation he was thinking even that she could get out to four 1400 meters this prep yeah well
Speaker 3that i guess we'll we'll might have to learn about that at some point um but yeah we got no issues with a you know strong run 1200 she was strong at a very strong 1200 the other day um so you know relaxed as well as you said so you know good turn of foot you know good speed
Speaker 2would suit um in the vanity race two over the 1400 meters many say that you have the second favorite the philly by pina turbo and pin up sheila like how good is she
Speaker 3yeah we've got a good bit of time for this philly um she she was unbeaten as a two-year-old and it was probably a bit unlucky first up at warwick farm and then ran well in the reginald allen giving a good bit of weight to the winner she probably just made a few mistakes again that day just slightly over race mid stages and then just lost a bit of focus up the straight um just applied winkers just to hopefully aid her um but she'll keep improving and she's you know our future is going to be in this grade. So you can make a good case for it this weekend.
Speaker 2Napoleonic, can he win a race? Can he win a race? Well, this is the most winnable race you've been in, I reckon, for quite some time. Would you agree with that? Yeah, absolutely. I think,
Speaker 3you know, his run in the missile was excellent. The form around that was fantastic. And the other day, probably didn't quite see the best of him. He wasn't horrendous, but just probably not the best of him. First time core field, a bit of a messy race, rail out, et cetera. We've looked forward to getting him to the straight. Always felt like he'd be effective down, you know, in that sort of, sorry, down the straight. And he's back in a, you know, grade that's a bit weaker than he's been contesting.
Speaker 2Yeah. Well, he's taken on Hanky Alfa, who was a benchmark horse in New Zealand, but won like a good, a really good horse. First up for Cindy Alderson. So he does get his chance there, Napoleonic, on Saturday. Could we back him with some confidence?
Speaker 3I don't see any reason why not. I think if the rain came, that would only suit him.
Speaker 2All right, then. And then we go down to the 1100 metre race, Argylewood, in race nine. Your thoughts there?
Speaker 3Probably a stronger race than we'd hoped for. She's, you know, been stakes placed. This is probably one of the strongest, most stakes races she's contested. She's effective down the straight, though. And again, we've always wanted to get her on a wet track. So if that rain did come, that should suit her. So she'd be a sort of knockout. We'd be delighted if she could run a hop.
Speaker 2You got some big chances at Randwick on Saturday as well. Azarax in the first race, Chad Schofield rides. He's never really far away. He'll be third up on Saturday.
Speaker 3Yeah, he's been running well. This isn't the strongest Saturday race on paper. His run the other day was probably better than it looked. Just wrong race shape. Probably rode him a little bit too close with how it shaped. And he would have improved off that run. So he's an each-way chance.
Speaker 2Geez, I like Samarelle. It was a confident boosting. Not a confident boosting victory because she won at her previous start, but she was well placed to win at Eagle Farm. She's a beautifully bred mare by Savabill out of Smashing. Can she go on with it and make it three on the trot?
Speaker 3You summed it up well. She is building in confidence. Probably something she just lacked through the last stage of her three-year-old season. She's racing really well. Mentally, she was slightly hardly stronger than a three-year-old, but she's putting it all together well now. And that's probably reflecting. Slightly awkwardly drawn, but again, a stepping grade, but she's improving.
Speaker 2Beautiful. And then you've got Chicks in race six over the 1,300 metres. Zach Lloyd takes the right.
Speaker 3She'll need to improve again. This is the toughest race. This race she's contested, but it was a good win first up. She beat Scopey Mare, who's hopefully coming into race.
Speaker 2And then the former import stars in their eyes. He goes around in the Sydney Gold Cup. He's the favourite with Bet365. He does deserve to break through. He hasn't had much luck this prep.
Speaker 3No, he's been a bit unfortunate. He was very good fresh, and then he just got beat on the nod with Pinhole at Rose Hill. He then ran in an 88-2,000. He's up in the weights and didn't draw very well. Ended up taking him back. It's just the race shape. And probably Rose Hill isn't really his favourite circumference. Back to Ramwick will suit a bit more of a testing 2,000. Better gait. He's got a massive swing with the weights with the two horses below him in the market, which gives us positives. Any rain would be a positive. But he's knocking on the door. He wouldn't be a surprise.
Speaker 2If I gave you $100, what would you do with it this weekend there, Tom?
Speaker 3I'd go. I'd go on to the Ashes betting for 2027. I'd have it on England at $2.10.
Speaker 2Well, you had no chance, really. We're back. We're going to dominate South Africa in that final test in Desider. But there's a long way to go. Do you want horses? I bet you that Marnus Labuschagne won't be playing in that Ashes series. Yes, horses would be great.
Speaker 3I'd go 50 win pin-up Schiele and 50 win. So race two,
Speaker 2number four, pin-up Schiele in the Vanity. You've just dented my confidence. I thought the Hayes horse would be awfully hard to beat. And then race six, number 13, Setono Glow in the Coolmore Stud Stakes.
Speaker 3One of them wins will be a bit of profit.
Speaker 2Yes, yes. And now tell me, anything today?
Speaker 3We've got one filly, quite a nice sort of staying filly in the Mile Maiden called Forsaken. Yes. She's about 440. She's actually a nice filly. Whether she needs another run before we sort of get to, you know, she might need a bit more experience, a bit more racing, but she'll be winning races and I wouldn't be surprised.
Speaker 2So that's race five, number 14, Forsaken today there at Wyong. Good on you, Tom. We're seeing you in Melbourne this weekend.
Speaker 3John's got the trip this week. And then I think I'll go down maybe Sunday, Monday or something like that.
Speaker 2All right, then. We look forward to having you in Melbourne. Have a wonderful day. We appreciate it. Tom, and good luck this weekend. Thanks, Gary. There's Tom Charlton. 15 minutes past eight. We're going to go to Werribee straight after this. We'll catch up with one of the leading owners in the game, Aussie Keir.
Speaker 1Join the conversation. Text us on 0499 736 736. Live across Australia. This is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 4Clever. Murphy, the veteran, the sidestep, the banana. Mark Murphy to try and win him for the Blues of the Dead. Back to Kennedy. Kennedy to Walsh. Walsh with the right foot banana. That hit the front of the Blues.
Speaker 2I can't believe James J. Braddock isn't wearing the Carlton silks watching James J. Braddock to one of his final pieces of work, of course, before the big race on that first Tuesday in November. And he joins us now on Giddy Up. Of course, he's got a host of chances throughout Cup Week. Ozzy, welcome back to Giddy Up. Morning. Morning, Gareth. Thank you. That get you up and about the Blues. Did you hear that? Oh, you probably did. Yeah, absolutely. We've got Sammy here.
Speaker 5Hey, Sammy. Welcome to Giddy Up. He brought a foot.
Speaker 2Hey, Gareth. Brought a footy with him. I said, no footies allowed in quarantine. So you're there to watch James J. Braddock. How is he?
Speaker 5Oh, look, he's settled. I've got Kevin here next to me. Hey, Kev. And he's just giving all the lads a rundown. And there's about five horses now working in line. I'll just show you here. If you can see that, Gareth. Yeah. There he is with Chantel. Hold on. There he is. Give us a wave, Chantel. Yeah, there he is there. James J. Braddock. So Chantel actually came out here with Loft about four years ago, unfortunately. James McDonald broke him down. That's you saying that, Gareth, not me. But yes, his last piece of work. So she's come back today and now working with Joseph O'Brien. And she's been taking care of James J.
Speaker 2Braddock. And so how many more gallops will these horses have before that Tuesday?
Speaker 6Yeah, Gareth, they're just going to build up steadily up to the end of the week. You know, that's the way Joseph does it. You know, he builds in the beginning of the week to the end. So everyone's really happy here. Mick Halford's overseeing the horses. He couldn't be happier. You know, we got great news yesterday with the scans, which is obviously a big relief. A couple of more trot-ups to go, et cetera. But in terms of from what we're seeing and feeling, these horses are absolutely booming here, which is what you want to see.
Speaker 2My mail I'm hearing out of Werribee, and I don't want to put you on the spot, Kevin, so I'll ask Ozzy. They tell me that James J. Braddock is the best of them. That's what I'm hearing anyway, Ozzy.
Speaker 5I've only seen half of them, Gareth, and to me, from the eye, he just looks unbelievable. His coat's glowing and he's settled, which is one of the concerns I had. But he's as calm as a lamb. He's just perfect, to be honest. Couldn't be happier with the way they've prevented him. And, yeah, it's just all systems go. Obviously, this is probably the time where you just get nervous leading up to the last few days. But, mate, you should have been here. I mean, you could have rang the boss and said, you can take an hour or two off. No, we should have. We might have to cut you out of the group. No, no, don't do that. Don't do that. I don't know if you can look here, but there's a big crew standing on the platform down there, and I don't see you there. No, do you know what?
Speaker 2It's an honour to be in the ownership of James J. Braddock. And I can't sleep. I can't sleep. I'm that bloody excited, along with Demi. And I've been telling friends about it. And, yeah, you've got to pinch yourself, really, that you've got a runner in the Melbourne Cup. But I don't know how you do it, Ozzy. You've got a few horses and do it each and every year. It is nerve-wracking. Even waiting for the CT scans to come back, you think, oh, please, please let them come back.
Speaker 5Yeah, there's a process you have to go through. Yeah. You have to go through with your mind. And you're right. It's just, first, it's trying to get him into the race. than obviously having the form and then you've got your vetting and your CTs and there's so much that goes into it that most people don't realise. Yeah, you're right, it's very nerve-wracking until you actually race and then the race is over and done within a couple of minutes. So it's, yeah. In most times it's pretty disappointing because it's never easy to win. No. It would have it any other way and the experience is just great.
Speaker 2You're checking the weather every two minutes, yeah, it's what it's all about. And Kev, Joseph, obviously he's over in the States at the moment for the Breeders' Cup. You said, I don't want to go to the Breeders' Cup anymore, Australia's your second home and you're here helping with his charges heading towards that Melbourne Cup. Trust your instinct, how is he? He's the second favourite for the Cup and defiantly he's the third favourite. Sons and lovers, they tell me he's a great each-way bet and then you've got Goody Two-Shoes, you're finished second. for his second in this race last year, and she's nearly the forgotten horse again in 2027.
Speaker 6Yeah, well, look, Garrett, I've said to you before, you know, if any one of these were our only one, we'd be making the case, you know. They're a really well-credentialed bunch of horses. Look, the barrier trial is going to be important for a few of them, you know, some more so than others. But I still do feel Sons and Lovers is overpriced. You'd love to get a low draw with him. You know, he can sit handy, a bit of cover. He's pacey at the, at the trip, you know, but I could sit here and talk to you for an hour, but all of them, because they all have their chances. But look, the weather is the big variable as well, Gareth, because, you know, I spend an unhealthy amount of time on rainfall radars at home, but he's going to be spending the next few days on here as well. Cause the, everyone tells me what these Melbourne forecasts kind of, what do they say? They're having an each way bet. They're going one to 15 mils, things like that. So we know what that track is like, but
Speaker 2if it rains on the day,
Speaker 6Gareth, I think.
Speaker 2Is James J. Brady? Yeah, James J. is the one.
Speaker 6Yeah. Yeah, he's the one out of all of them. They would really love that, you know. It wouldn't be ideal for all of them, but it would definitely be a big help to him, I think, you know.
Speaker 2All right, then. Sorry to do this to Kylie Rogers, but I hope it pours down on Melbourne Cup Day. I hope it doesn't stop raining.
Speaker 5Well, we want it to rain the night before or the morning and then beautiful sunshine on the day.
Speaker 2That's what we want. Well, it was such a great drainage track. Maybe rain for a bit of the morning and then it dries out as we get closer to the Cup. So, Ozzy, what's your best chance for the week? Apart from James J.
Speaker 5Braddock. Well, I've got a couple of runners, obviously. In Sydney, we've got Mr. Miller in the Golden Eagle, which will be hard. But I don't really have any strong chances this week at all. Jimmy Starr will win, won't he? We've got Jimmy. Yeah, Jimmy Starr's probably the one. that stands out at this point, so I think he's the one for us. But, yeah, he has two strong runners in Sydney, Jimmy Starr and Mr Miller. Yeah, yeah. And, yeah. It's bloody exciting then. And I've got – probably unhinged is actually probably my – actually, you know what? Unhinged is probably my best bet at Flemington, I reckon.
Speaker 2So if I gave you $100, you would have it unhinged. Can you get – I see Johnny Barker and Semmy Walsher in the background. Can you get Walshy? Because his producer, Louis, he works for us, and he says that he's living the dream. Hey, Walshy, Louis didn't want to ask you personally, but do you mind just dropping his rent down a little bit because he hasn't backed a winner for a while?
Speaker 7He's actually tipped me a few, so I'll probably owe him a little bit. As you know, Gareth, I'm not too knowledgeable on the horses, but Louie's been a good mentor for me and always keeping a keen eye on the show. And Gareth and I are new for a long time, so hopefully we can get a cup winner together.
Speaker 2It'll be something else. So what's he look like, Walsh? Are you ready to go? And how are you going to prepare for Cup Day? He'll be a good partner.
Speaker 7Yeah, I was a bit nervous. It's probably the first time I've padded a horse, so I didn't know what I was going to do and thought my fingers might have been taken off. He actually, every time he's strolling by now, He's given us a bit of a side eye and a nod. So he's got a bit of confidence about him. And Kevin Ozzie and JB have given me some good word that he's looking good. So they're the experts. I'll take that advice.
Speaker 2And the great Johnny Barker. Barks, you've had a lot of success with Ozzie. I think you went to school with him as well. But what would it mean to you to win a Melbourne Cup?
Speaker 8Look at me super, mate. Absolutely super. But to your point, Ozzy's been unbelievable with the boys. Just the little WhatsApp group that we put together has been absolutely hilarious. You know, we were half a length from winning the Cox plate and we've got James J in the Melbourne Cup. And it's all thanks to Ozzy, which is great. But we're super excited, mate.
Speaker 2What was it like getting, I don't mean to interrupt you with these delaying or it's difficult for me to try and time when you're finished, But what did you feel like when you went down in that Cox Plate? Because obviously you're so proud of the horse, but you get so close.
Speaker 8Yeah, look, as you said, we were super proud. He did an amazing job. Look, he had to shift a couple of times to get out and lost a touch of momentum. But when he got out, he exploded. cosmic crusader had a had a nice head of wind on the outside and hadn't hadn't um had to run into any trouble so he he got him in the end but she's super proud mate and we um aussie took us out on saturday night um there's quite a few of us that had an awesome night um just reflecting on the fact that we've got a super horse under under our uh under our belt two weeks yeah aussie uh aussie cities he's bounced so uh it looks like we might go to champion stakes and um have a bit of fun
Speaker 2there too. So you're going to win the Melbourne Cup and the Champions Stakes in the same week what about that and Aussie would Jimmy Starr back up on Champions Day?
Speaker 5Look I'm not sure at this point I'm probably leaning to just going straight to the 1400 metres after that but I'll speak to Kieran once he gets out this Saturday and then we'll make the call but at this stage Birdman will probably probably run next week, and Jimmy will probably run in the all.
Speaker 2Beautiful. And Aussie, Johnny Barker, I was there lucky enough just to watch from afar that the speech that Aussie gave to the group straight after Birdman went down and that Cox played, it was inspiring stuff, and hopefully Sammy Walsh was taking notes because he'll have to do that next year when he becomes captain of the Carlton Football Club, and Maltsey could learn a lot from Ozzy with his inspirational speeches before and after the rates of the jockey. So, hey, boys, bring it on.
Speaker 8Yeah. Yeah, it was Alistair Clarkson-like sort of stuff. It was extraordinary. I think there was half a dozen boys that were keen to actually get the boots on and head out and get after it, get the mouthguards in. But it was super.
Speaker 2I loved it. Benny Mellon's never ridden a better ride then. He pushed down at the right time. He gave it a peach, mainly because Ozzy motivated him with that inspiring speech before the race. Good on you, boy. So, Ozzy, if I gave you $100, what would you do again with it this weekend?
Speaker 5Unhinged at Flemington, Gareth. I think that's, yeah. So, Bray and myself have got that runner. Bray bred it, actually, from a mare that we had called Hinge. So all the best to Bray and Chris Waller for that. I think it'll run. As in the Carbine Club.
Speaker 2Yes. It's fair to say everyone would be unhinged if James J. Braddock wins that Lexus Melbourne Cup on that first Tuesday in November. I already told Hutchie I'll take a week off. You won't see me. And bring it on. Hey, we appreciate you all. Good on, Kevin. Good on you, Sammy. Good on you for turning up the track work and barks. Great to meet your brother there on Saturday as well. What a legend he is.
Speaker 7Well-produced show today, Gareth. Yeah, beautifully produced. Louis set us up well here.
Speaker 2He said to me the other day, he said, well, she reckons I need to get on camera a little bit more. So we've got him on a couple of occasions. And he's just been dominating.
Speaker 7Yeah, he's playing it down that he doesn't like the limelight, I reckon, Gareth. He's screaming for a bit more.
Speaker 2Yeah. Is it a little bit disappointing, however, to have a housemate that really struggled off the halfback flank for the Bannockburn Football Club this year?
Speaker 7Do you have to? He's had a big pre-season, though. You'll watch out for next year.
Speaker 2He needs it. I did some running with him the other day, and he was gone after the first 200 metres, but you might be able to give him a little bit of guidance. Hey, boys, we appreciate that insight.
Speaker 6Yeah, hey, Gary. The lads were saying me and you have to get out on the tan one of these days before we go away. We're going to have to have a head out.
Speaker 2Do you know, Kevin Blake is a bit of a marathon runner, Walshie. Now, Kevin, Sam Welsh is one of our best runners in AFL football, of course, the number one sport in this country. You should ask Sammy if he can take you around the tan. I reckon I looked at your figures there. You were going about five minutes a K, I reckon, unless I read it wrong.
Speaker 6Yeah, that's not very fast.
Speaker 2Yeah, that's slow work. While she does that backwards, Kev, he does that backwards. Hey, boys, it's a lot of fun. I appreciate it. Ozzy, I appreciate you. Thanks for letting me live. Letting me live. the dream um i can't wait for tuesday and um um bring it on thanks boys gareth open up that wallet
Speaker 5open up that wallet for denny really nice dress outfit yes yes i've got much left now big day we'll go and get them all
Speaker 2right mate see you brother thanks there's a key there um there you go paul you would have loved that full of uh for the blue supporters um that'll probably i reckon i'd probably prefer to win a melbourne cup than a grand final or you reckon that's the other way around yeah he says they'd probably rather win a grand final we're going to take a break on the other side of it um tony golan will be joining us

Speaker 2back to giddy up 38 minutes past state so what we know just going back to that melbourne cup a lot of people are texting in so um what we know is that i've been talking to trett mason how do we've been talking to the different connections in the melbourne cup um there's two horses that are yet to be ticked off regarding their scans that's the japanese horse stinger glass and also saint george now um it doesn't mean they're not running in the Melbourne Cup but they're going to be running in the Melbourne Cup they just got to get the scan results back we might not know until lunchtime there but the rest of the runners have basically been given the green light um after having their ct scans ticked off now um obviously the results not coming back for those two horses means that they might have had to do a pet scan which is the other scan that they need to look into a little bit deeper with those horses so um yeah so we're just awaiting so for me personally and i'm this my job to give you information that i know especially when it comes to punting is that um they haven't been ruled out of the melbourne cup those two horses just yet they just haven't been given the green light yet so i wouldn't be backing them if you like stinger glass or you like saint george i'll be waiting until you get it um we get um told that they have been given the green light um and passed the scan to compete in the melbourne cup so um that's what i'll be doing at the moment i wouldn't be backing stinger glass or saint george i'll just be awaiting clear as i said um and i want to make this clear they haven't been ruled out of the melbourne cup but we've talked to all of the connections that have been um along with trent mason out of that have um that are in the melbourne cup and they've all told us that they have been given the green light with the ct scan and a lot of like kevin blake as he put out on xd yesterday that joseph o'brien runners have passed so a lot of the the connections are letting everyone know which is terrific but the only two horses that have been given the green light are the ones that have been that we haven't um haven't been told that they have passed as yet uh saint george and also stinger glass and pride of jenny trent mason how to reporting as well this morning here to chat to kirimar and it's looking unlikely um unlikely that pride of jenny will be going around in the champions mile on saturday week so she's taken a little while now to get over that injury that has seen and missed the empire rose and of course the king charles um a few weeks back we'll continue on giddy up stable mail it's 40 minutes past eight we'll catch up now with the champion queensland trainer tony golan and has pemry going around the cool more stud stakes hello to you tony yeah good
Speaker 9morning gareth how are you
Speaker 2good thank you mate um pembrey you've kept her fresh we know that she can be devastating fresh can she win in your eyes um or do you believe that she can win a cool more against these um talented three-year-olds galloping down the straight and that cool more stud stakes on saturday
Speaker 9yeah look it's a hell of a race um i don't know if any of us are going to go there on a sad day just thinking our horses are going to win it's such a strong deep race um but look i can't be happy with the preparation really you know obviously a first up run she was brilliant when she was nice and fresh up and then went back to the race a fortnight later and it just doesn't work for her so enabled us to be able to give her the time now a couple of weeks off sort of back in had a really good prep with her in sydney got down to melbourne in the middle of last week and she's settling beautiful at flemington so i can't fault the preparation for the cool more and know how good she is when she's fresh so she certainly gives
Speaker 2herself a chance yeah um and when she is fresh she's dynamite as you pointed out um she heads down the straight how do you think she'll handle that i don't
Speaker 9think it's a problem for her to be honest i mean you never really know i guess till you put them down there but as far as the you know 1200 up the straight i got no concerns at all at the distance i mean she's around 1200 around wake up the rise so she can do that she'll get down the straight it's just got to handle the occasion and obviously the class i mean there's a lot of a lot of really nice three girls in this race it looks like you know a really good bunch of three rolls this year so she's um but she's when she's sharp and fresh she's as good as any of them spring trips and
Speaker 2what's her best ground um i don't think
Speaker 9it matters really unless you can get through wet ground so that wouldn't bother if it rained yeah um but i think she's just as effective on top of the ground she ran really you know fast time at that round we got on a pretty good track that when she won first up this prep so look i don't think ground an issue for her so if it was to to rain and we were to get to a really wet track then no problem all right then
Speaker 2it looks like she's perfectly drawn with speed um around her with natural flinging eight and um paradox he was not far away in gate 13 yeah well you
Speaker 9saw at the trials at warwick farm the day she's jumped down she dropped her head and she's happy to relax and be where you want i think more with her it doesn't matter so much how we ride her we can we can be close you know it looks as though we'll be just behind a couple of really speed horses and and hopefully present and give herself every chance and inside the furlong but i think she's pretty adaptable she's not a real one-trick pony she can sort of lead or take i think the key for me with her is just the preparation getting that right and i feel fresh is is best for her we've seen her best ratings peaks have been off her fresh runs so i feel the preparation is important and then you know from there well i'll just just give her a good ride there's no really one way to ride this philly i think we can do pretty well do what we
Speaker 2like on her it's um exciting mate you sound quietly confident with pembury obviously one of the best horses that you've trained
Speaker 9she's a good sharp philly i mean she's not not much to look at she's only a weird little thing and she's got good speed she's got a good speed she's got you know and um she's got a good bit of tenacity about her like i said she ran the 1200 fresh up at ramick no issue ran fast time and she's gonna have to do something similar or better on um on saturday for me she looks better than when she did first up she appears to be in really good condition like i said settled in very well down here so you're as confident as you can be that you've done everything right in going into such a deep
Speaker 2race um what about at durbin on saturday we're on a heavy 10 at the moment what do you think the conditions will be like there you've had a lot of rain in southeast queensland
Speaker 9yeah we have we needed it so i'm not going to complain too much about the rain um then doing a vastly different beast to what we see at eagle farm you know it dries out much quicker but if we happen to get a few clear days some of the weather's quite good up there today not a cloud in the sky so if you know we can get a few clear days no rain at all that that track will improve to what level look i'm just not sure but you'd hardly think it'd get out of the genuine soft range
Speaker 2yeah what's your best in do at durbin um oh
Speaker 9probably cardinet early in the card i think she's lucky the other day she got back i had to go around them she looks pretty well placed up a good draw in a 65 but we've got a sprinkling you know good chances throughout the meeting but you know for me it's more weather watch let's see what sort of track we're going to get and then then we'll be able to delve into what our better chances are closer to closer to saturday all right
Speaker 2if i gave you a hundred dollars what would you do with it this
Speaker 9weekend i'll have it on cardinet at
Speaker 2durbin race four number 11 cardinet with benny thompson aboard go and get them in the cornwall stud stakes with your philly in pembury tony we wish you the best of luck and thanks very much for your time as always thanks gareth cheers mate there's tony gold the champion queensland trainer 44 minutes past date we're going to take a break nick ryan shane jackson will be my special guest next welcome back to giddy up 47 minutes past date um shane jackson's not far away we'll hear from nick ryan as well paulie derby day i've said this on a few occasions to everybody when like um they asked me what's your favorite day of the race yes there's so many to choose from now but i always say derby day when you walk through those gates at flemington there's something special because you know that there's four wonderful days to come especially if the sun is shining everyone decked in their black and white and there's no better feeling i reckon for us racing fans would you
Speaker 10say this is the purest day gareth you've got the best horse horse flesh going up the straight and around the circle at
Speaker 2flemington flemington have changed the way that they go about it i think champion stays the the day full of quality because that's where the champions turn up and the champions World Champion Sprint and Champion Stakes, and we're going to have the champions there, Tempted, Autumn Glow, and Cosmic Crusader. But, you know, Derby Day is a special day. The famous classic, you've got the Coolmore, which is a stallion-making race these days. It's always been great fun watching Pride of Jenny in a Empire Rose. We get to see Lady Shenandoah and a few others go around this time around. And then it's just the start of four wonderful days and the build-up to the Melbourne Cup, the final field's announced at the end of the day. You have the Barry draw, and then you look forward to the greatest race of all. It's my favourite day, Derby Day.
Speaker 10Derby Day is my number one day on the racing calendar.
Speaker 2Is it because of the anticipation for the rest of the week?
Speaker 10Yeah, you've got big group one days, and everybody dresses up in the black and white. It's traditional, and you've just got great betting opportunities this weekend as well, which hopefully put some money in the bank account, mate.
Speaker 2It's like the start of a holiday when you get registered, ready to go, and you know, well, you jump on that plane or you jump in the car knowing that you've got a whole week to look forward to.
Speaker 10Hopefully the weather holds up too, eh? That'd be nice.
Speaker 2Shane Jackson, he's got a couple of big chances. This could be his biggest day on Saturday, and he joins us now. Shane, hello to you. How are you going? Good, thank you, mate. How would you describe Derby Day in this country?
Speaker 11Oh, it's a great day. It's one of the old-fashioned big days of racing. Anyone you talk to, they always want to go to Derby Day, and everyone wants to win a derby, whether it's overseas or here. It's always, you know, it's one of those races where it's been around forever and a day, and hopefully they don't go mad and change the distance of it and leave what's not broken as it is. But, yeah, it's going to be exciting to be a part of it.
Speaker 2Hear, hear. Hear, hear, Shane. Now, what about King's Nets? We had your own Antonio Odebrecht basically say he's betting up. He reckons he's the horse to beat. Do you share his confidence?
Speaker 11Tony's a confident man, but I'm glad he was. I'm a bit of a low baller, I suppose. I was going to the Geelong Classic with this horse, and Tony said, why not have a crack Saturday at Caulfield? And I thought that the 2,000 might have been a bit sharp for him, and I'm thankful that he definitely aims for the stars. And, yeah, so he was good at Caulfield, and I'm confident. I think he's better. His gallop Tuesday morning was better. It was better than the gallop leading into Caulfield. His horse is both maturing physically and mentally. He was so green his first run and improved a bit his second run, and third run he won. And even at Caulfield, I thought, you know, he got there and it took him a while to actually get his bid in front. He was having a look. He even sort of had a nip at the horse beside him. So, yeah, if he can have improved another bit, I don't think the distance is going to be an issue. I know he's a schnitzel, but on the motor, you know, the motor was a proper stare. And, yeah, I don't think the distance is going to be an issue if we get a nice run in transit.
Speaker 2Do you think he's better than he was at Caulfield now?
Speaker 11I think he is. I think he's, like, not better, but he's in a bit more switched on, a bit more professional. Melissa Julius rides many gallops here, and she galloped him leading into Caulfield, and she thought he was great. And she galloped him here the other morning on Tuesday on the course proper, and she thought he was definitely more professional about it and let down better. So, the occasion is the biggest problem, I think, not problem, but that'll be his biggest task to get over. He's quite a hot, fizzy sort of a horse, and at Caulfield, he bubbled over for the first half an hour and then settled into it, whereas we're going to be there three hours before the race for the derby. So, we want to get his pre-race manners right, and then hopefully we're drawing well, so hopefully the race can look after itself.
Speaker 2And how do you ride him? I think the draw's all important for these three-year-olds trying to get 2,500 metres, and you get that perfect gait, to put him where you want him, really.
Speaker 11I think so, and I'm not going to tell Damien Lane how to ride, you know. These good jockeys, you can, as they say, good jockeys don't need instructions, and bad ones can't carry him out anyway. So, we're drawing well. The biggest thing is going to be get him to relax, switch off, and Caulfield was a bit the same. You know, he bubbled over in the mountain yard, and Damien, as well, has been a good jockey. He's a great horseman. So, he went around to the barriers and got his feet out of the irons and got him relaxed. Again, that was the winning of the race, really, because once he began, he switched off and relaxed, which we're going to have to do over 2,500. He needs to go asleep and just have a nice, smooth run into it, and if he can be producing him halfway down the straight, I think we're going to be very, very strong to the line.
Speaker 2You're a good form man. Who do you think the horse to beat is?
Speaker 11You're telling lies now if you're saying I'm a good form man, really. I'm nothing on ye blokes. I think the Friedman horse look was very good, and the Geelong Classic, his name goes above my head, but the Godolphin horse, I think, is. Hierarchy? Yes, yes, but there's a few. It's no give me a race. I know everyone loves saying it's a winnable derby, but go and try and win it, and I'm sure everyone's in the same boat. You know, there's a lot of good horses in it, as there should be, for $3 million. So, yeah, I'm just going to worry about my own horse. I'm not going to worry about the opposition and wrap him up in cotton wool here and get him there in his best order as I can, and he'll come down to the Flemington Stable on Friday from Warrnambool. He's just back from the beach here now, and, yeah, if we get there, if we get there, which we will, in one piece, and he gets a nice run, I think he's going to be giving us something to cheer for.
Speaker 2Beautiful man, as you point out. It's a great test for Jockey. You pointed out that with Damien Lane, how he's got to have. He's got to get all of his tricks out, basically, to try and help King's Knits settle. It's a great challenge for the trainer to get the. to get their horses to settle and compete and get a strong 2,500 metres, and that, to me, is why the derby's so special. It's something a little bit different. Three-year-olds in the spring trying to get out to this trip, and if you win the derby, you've done your job, I reckon. What else do you need to do? You're a classic winner.
Speaker 11Well, that'll be a dream. Look, it's a privilege at this stage of our training setup to have a runner in the derby, to be honest. It's our first Group 1 runner. But, yeah, it's leading to a lot of sleepless nights. I'm not getting much sleep at the minute, and, you know, checking the poor old horse 25 times a day will probably annoy him at this stage. But, no, it's going to be great to be a part of it, and, yeah, hopefully we can get a result we're very close to.
Speaker 2How good is his son of Pessance de Lune in high falls?
Speaker 11Yeah, he's breaking the mould a bit. I think he's pretty handy. You know, he's still raw, and his first win was on heavy ground at Hamilton, and that was my little query coming to his second start at Warrnambool. It was about four, and, you know, being a Puy Sance, is he going to be just a bit of a mudlark? And he let down, and he put him to bed, albeit it wasn't a very good race by any means. But what I did like about him was he was still green. You know, Johnny Allen said after, he said, I was nearly half afraid to give him a slap, which he didn't. He said he felt like he was nearly going to whip around. He was having a look around, and he had still plenty in the tank. So to win like that with a bit in the tank shows us plenty of promise. He's in, obviously, on Saturday. He's drawn well. He's in the market. We're going to accept for Tuesday as well, for the three-year-old race on Tuesday as well. And then when those fields come out, we'll make a decision one way or the other which way we're leaning. Just go for the best chance of winning. So, but, oh, he's plenty of upside, plenty of promise. Very lucky that, Jerry and the crew don't want to sell him because we had plenty of offers. So, yeah, no, it's nice to have a few nice youngsters coming through. This time last year, we were more so the older secondhand stock, and we still have plenty of those, which is great. But it's lovely to have some of these younger horses where you haven't reached the bottom of them yet, and it's exciting.
Speaker 2And it's great to see. I think this would probably be one of the last of the stars of Besant's Dalloon. He's coming towards the end of it there. It's sweating him. He's been a mighty horse. He's one of my favourites, the big grey. Yeah, and it's great to see him have a horse like High Falls there. Shane, I've got about a minute left. If I gave you $100, what would you do with it this weekend?
Speaker 11Well, you'd have to split it up a little bit. I think you'd have something each way on King Schnitz. I think Fujita San on Cup Day is going to be a great chance. You'll have something each way on him. And I'd say a horse called Newfoundland will be good value in the Heritage Cup. He's slipping in. And under the radar a bit, he's had a couple of good runs. He wasn't beating a million miles in the Moonee Valley Cup and didn't get a very hard ride. And he's going back to benchmark from Group 2. And I think he's just peaking at the right time. Beautiful. 2800 right up his alley. He looks to be back to himself. He ran second in it a couple of years ago and ran very well in the Adelaide Cup. So I think he'd be a bit of value as well.
Speaker 2I've got 10 seconds. What's your best at Warrnambool today, Shane?
Speaker 11I suppose as long as this rain stays away. It's come through a soft five. I think it's thought it was six after walking it. But we are, it is a twilight meeting. So if we get back to a nice, dry five or better, I think she's a good chance.
Speaker 2Go and get him, brother. Go and win that derby. Thanks, Shane. Cheers, guys.
Speaker 1Text us on 0499 736 736 live across Australia. is Gideon with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 2Welcome back to Gideon. What's up, Gareth? All with you. What a stable male we've still got left for you ahead of Derby Day and Golden Eagle Day. Nick Ryan, Peter Moody, Paul Massara and Jack Turnbull, the assistant trainer to Kira Marr. We'll kick off this hour chatting to Nick Ryan. G'day, Nick. Morning, Gareth. How are you going, mate? Would you just ruin the party with a gelding and a cool more stud steaks and cost a lot of farms and connections millions of dollars?
Speaker 4Yeah, I've got absolutely no issues doing that, Gareth.
Speaker 2I've been getting a lot of text messages throughout the week regarding doubt time. Is he ready to, like, how confident are you that he can win?
Speaker 4Oh, look, he's, we're obviously going into a cool more, so I don't want to be overconfident, but as far as the horse is concerned, I couldn't be happier. He's had a faultless prep. He's continued to progress. He's done well. He looks a million dollars. Yeah, every box is ticked to say that horse is well and he's going to run well.
Speaker 2You happy with the gate?
Speaker 4Yeah, very. He's got Paradoxium to his outside. He's got next episode outside Paradoxium. Naturally, you tend to like to draw out down the straight, don't you? So, very comfortable with it.
Speaker 2Beautiful. And what about the ground?
Speaker 4Yeah, look, I'd probably embrace any rain. You've seen when he's first started on a soft seven. His father won. He's won two on a heavy eight, Doubtland. Look, I think he's very adaptable, whether it be good three or soft, but I'd lean towards a soft track knowing that he gets through it. But yeah, he's both.
Speaker 2Beautiful. So that's a good push for Doubttime in the cool more. Anglais has been one of our horses that we've followed ever since we did Beyond the Barriers with you. You gave us a good push for this filly. She finally broke through with the victory last start. Can she win away? Are you grateful at a price?
Speaker 4Oh, why not? I suppose, like you said, from day one, I've wrapped her up, haven't I? And I've been pretty open about it. And she's just a great physical to look at. She's obviously a $280,000 Sydney Classic purchase, and she's got a bit of class about her. We had to do a little pivot when she got beat at Kilmore at $1.60. She didn't really come down the hill that well. She was a little bit plain. So I just gave her a few days out in the paddock, and we reset. She trawled in the blinkers, or she jumped out in the blinkers here at Flemington and then went and won convincingly and very impressively at Ballarat last week. So she's going to get a chance, and she's on trials
Speaker 2that day for her own. I know you're a great trainer, but $14,000 to $2,000. And I think, is this the same campaign Strictly Business had last year by winning that maiden and then going on to a Wakefield and then an Oaks? I think it is.
Speaker 4It is. Yeah, it is. She won the same maiden at Ballarat. So, look, it's not by design. It's just happened. So, look, she's done plenty of work. She's very clean-winded. Ethan Brown jumped her out at Flemington and then rode her at Ballarat, as you know, and he did suggest that further is going to be a go. So, look, she hadn't pulled up well, and she wasn't as well as she is. You know, she wouldn't be there, but she's put her hand up. She's extremely well. She's put up well. She actually did a bit of work this morning. I galloped her on the grass this morning, and she couldn't be better. So, yeah, really happy with her. So, $2,000, no problems then? Well, at this stage, we're not going to know until Saturday, but she's shown every indication that most certainly wouldn't be an issue.
Speaker 2All right, then. If I gave you $100 this weekend, what would you do with it, Nick?
Speaker 4Oh, well, look, you lean towards down. Doubt time, just the way he is, is a good price. But, you know, we're racing for big money, so it's not about the punt this weekend, Gareth. For us, it is.
Speaker 2For us battlers, it is. For me, it's not. So, you've got to give us something. Would it be $25 each way on both, $50 each way on doubt time, or we go to winner's sister at witchy proof?
Speaker 4No, I'll just have $50 on the nose at doubt time, I reckon. I'm very confident in the horse as well. I'm not saying he's. going to go out and win. We're obviously talking about a cool more, but I just. I couldn't be happier with how the week's gone or the two weeks has gone since the blue sapphire. He's actually strengthening up in work. Everything's spot on, so. Yeah, fingers crossed.
Speaker 2Beautiful. We'll have $100 on doubt time then, Ray. Six, number 11. Good luck, Nick. Thanks for your time, brother. Thank you, Gareth. There's Nick Ryan. Always great to catch up with the champion trainer, Peter Moody. Moods, welcome to Giddy Up. Thanks for your time as always, mate.
Speaker 12No worries, Gareth.
Speaker 2Are you on the road?
Speaker 12I'm driving between Packerham and Belgrave South. Oh, there you go. Yes, yes. I am on A road.
Speaker 2So when does the mayor travel up to Sydney?
Speaker 12She ends up this afternoon.
Speaker 2Okay, then. And how is she, mate?
Speaker 12She's good. She's good. Can't fault her. Happy, healthy girl. Had a little breeze. Just had a three furlong. Three furlongs on the course proper Tuesday morning just to stretch her legs and open her lungs up. And she seemed great and seemed to really enjoy it. So, yeah, listen, she's in a great spot, mate.
Speaker 2Yeah, this is she's alibi. Of course, we're talking about her as the odds-on favourite for the Golden Eagle. So that tough run over the 2,000 metres, have you got any concerns now after watching her the last couple of weeks?
Speaker 12No, no. Listen, I haven't got a worry in the world. Quite a few other people have, so I'll let them carry the worry. And we'll just. We'll just push on.
Speaker 2Well, if you don't worry moods, no one else should. So she's going to be hard to beat then.
Speaker 12She's in great order. You know, we were looking for a midfieldish draw to outside. We've come up a six. Probably puts a midfieldish thereabouts. You're always going to need a little bit of luck in running. I see there's a couple already out. Yeah. I think we're down to a field of 16. So, you know, you would think she probably settles in front of half of them at least. Maybe. We're not going to look to. And a little bit of luck rounding the turn. Hopefully, Baywack doesn't get to go even time in front and rack them and stack them, which can happen with Nash on a front runner. You know, everything gets their chance. And, you know, she's too good for them.
Speaker 2Surely not. When there's $10 million up for grabs, he won't be able to get away with those sectionals. Nash, surely not, moods.
Speaker 12Well, he goes about having to get away with a bit, doesn't he? He does. He does.
Speaker 2But, Trump, he's riding. He's riding. He's riding. He's riding in good form. So, yeah, she ticks a few boxes and he's got to travel up there nicely, which she's done pretty well in the past anyway. She's used to it by now, I would imagine.
Speaker 12Elizabeth's sticking to the same routine. She's been up there three times now. Guinea's Doncaster. And then when she ran second in the winch, she'll be in the same box, same stable, same routine. Didn't see any sense in changing anything. So, happy days.
Speaker 2And my old favourite pounding, he's knocking on the door, isn't he?
Speaker 12She's racing well. You know, he doesn't know he's eight. The body's got a bit of wear and tear. But, listen, it's a nice race for him to run well in. Good prize money. Have a throw at the stumps. If he doesn't win, you know, he'll run top three or four. And he goes there fit, well and healthy.
Speaker 2You've got Pikey on Autumn Lover. Can she cause an upset in the vanity?
Speaker 12Well, the last two runs have been good. Just drawn that slightly sticky again. I'd love to see her out of three or four and be third paired. Where's she going to land? The track map's a little tricky. She'll be down the centre strong. Just a matter of if the race map enables her to get into it.
Speaker 2Is Gallant's son ready to win third up to 1,200 metres down the straight?
Speaker 12Yes, in good order. Happy with him. He looked very good in the gallop on Tuesday. Just followed it up with a bit of pace work this morning. And he really looked sharp, that colt. I think he'll run very well.
Speaker 2And can Desert Lightning win the Damien Oliver?
Speaker 12Well, he was unsuited back to 1,100 the other day, but it was just a gap run that we had to have. He's back to his right trip now. Just once again, don't want to look for excuses, but he just maps a little ugly from the 12. But if he gets the right run, he can run like this five or six Desert Lightnings up the top there, and they all seem to take turns, so let's hope it's his turn.
Speaker 2And Betty Mellom, he's back on brighter waltz.
Speaker 12Yeah, well, he didn't have another ride in at this time, so she's in good order. I would have liked to have probably drawn higher than lower, but he was happy to run her in 1,100. She gets the same conditions as the last couple. She's raced very consistent, hasn't she? So back 100 meters, makes her own luck on her about the speed, and has been very good down the straight in the past. So you would think she's going to run competitive also.
Speaker 2Yeah, and the rain won't hurt her if it does come there on Derby Day.
Speaker 12No, no, any showers there late in the day, you wouldn't shy away from that at all.
Speaker 2And I think a pack of them for us?
Speaker 12Oh, just, we weren't having a shower of rain out here. I was just talking to Cam Miller, our track manager, and we're hopeful we might have got back to a five, but just had a bloody shower, and might leave a bit too much moisture in the ground, so we'll have to reassess our runners in the morning when the, see how the track comes up.
Speaker 2If I gave you $100 moods, what would you do with it this weekend?
Speaker 12Gallant sun, I reckon.
Speaker 2Beautiful. Interstitial alibi, of course, but we'll have race four number 600 to win gallant sun, I love it. You go and take all that money off the New South Wales trainers and owners up there, Moots, and do it again.
Speaker 12We love that Northern money. They do it to us plenty, so it's nice to give them a little bellyache every now and again. Have a great weekend.
Speaker 2Good on you, Moots. There's Peter Moody there. We'll take a break. Paul Massara not far away and also Jack Turville.
Speaker 1Live across Australia, this is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 2Welcome back to Giddy Up. The interesting part to this Saturday's VRC Derby is the Sydney horses coming down after competing during the Sydney Spring, and Cormier and Stormy Marco that competed last week in the champion stakes over the 2,000 metres. Cormier, after the barrier, draws down the favourite with bet 3,65. Paul Massara is the co-trainer, and he joins us now. Paul, thanks very much for your time.
Speaker 13No worries, Gareth. How are you?
Speaker 2Good, thanks, mate. How is Cormier?
Speaker 13Mate, he's OK. You know, it's been a big week. We've obviously had to have the tough run in Sydney and then travel down to Melbourne. He's only a youngish, kind of inexperienced horse, so I won't lie to you. The whole concept of running down here has been a bit of an afterthought. We were planning on, you know, his last race being Saturday in Sydney, but just given the. the depth of the race down here, and he did come through the race unscathed in Sydney, so we thought, you know, we've just got to take the option. But I'm not sure, just at this stage, you know, how well he's rebounded. He seems fine. But, you know, young horses and travelling and a week between runs. If it was another week, I'd be. I'd probably have a different conversation. But I'm just a little bit sceptical of the travel and everything else and what it's taken out of him.
Speaker 2You've been in this game and experienced so much, so it's. it sounds like that you would be a little concerned to see how he would go on the back-up then this weekend. You're more hopeful than confident?
Speaker 13I'm hopeful more than. much more than confident. Yeah, that's my general feeling. He's fine. He's not, you know, there's. He looks OK, but I'd love to see him kind of jumping out of his skin and he's doing everything right, but without kind of, yeah, you know, showing any over-exuberance. But he's eating well. He's come through it fine. I just find with these back-up horses, particularly younger horses, you just never know until you send them around. So the ones I predicted would run well in the past haven't and the ones I thought didn't back-up that well did. So I'm just going to have to wait a little bit till the weekend. But we're, you know, we're helped a lot by the barrier. You know, it's a really convenient barrier to have. And, you know, we should be in a nice position coming to that first turn. So all of that bodes well. But, yeah, just the short back-up. It was two weeks between runs, so I'd be much more confident.
Speaker 2Well, is he. If he's as tough as another Maurice that we've seen in the last couple of weeks in Cosmic Crusader, he'll be okay, mate.
Speaker 13No, absolutely. No, they are a very tough breed. Yeah. And that certainly gives me a fair bit of hope. But, yeah, they're certainly a tough breed. He's just not as seasoned as, you know, Cosmic Crusader. Another year under the belt and it might be a very different story. So, anyway, we keep our fingers crossed and another kind of, another day to go and he's eating well and hopefully just, you know, pumps himself up and puts his best out in the day.
Speaker 2He has been placed twice on a heavy track, but would he prefer it dry?
Speaker 13I think he prefers probably just the cut out of it, you know, just being able to get the toe into it. I don't think a hard track would bother him. You know, the heavy, I don't really think he loved the heavy. I always thought that soft is fine, but heavy was a bit much. He always ran well on it. But we felt that we'd never really found his top gear on the heavy. Different style of races. I was sure the races, this is obviously a. Probably it's going to be an easier test if it's on firmer ground. But I don't know what's forecast. But it does look a little bit overcast. Is there much on the horizon?
Speaker 2Yeah, about seven mils now. It has changed on a daily basis. But I reckon there'll be some rain at some stage there on Derby Day.
Speaker 13Yeah, I don't think that'll worry us too much.
Speaker 2It's bloody exciting, mate. We get to see the mare at Flemington on Champions Day, Autumn Glow. I don't know how many she'll have to compete against, but I think it's terrific. There'll be 80-odd thousand there. Fish will be playing. Autumn Glow will be there. It doesn't really get any better, does it?
Speaker 13No, it'll be fantastic. We're all very excited about that. All the feedback's been great from the stable about her. So, yeah, I think she travels down later this week and settles in. And we're very excited to see her come down here for the first time and, I guess, left-handed for the first time. But I think she's done plenty of work in that direction at Rose Hill. So, everyone's pretty confident she'll handle leading on the other league.
Speaker 2If I gave you $100, what would you do with it this weekend, mate?
Speaker 13Oh, what would I do with $100 this weekend? Oh, gee. I'd probably keep it.
Speaker 2All right, then. I might have it on. I don't know if I'll have it on Cormier now. Who do you think will win the Derby? Have you got Stormy Marco covered? He's probably thinking the same way as you are.
Speaker 13I think it's in exactly the same boat as us. Yep. And I'm tipping it was a bit of an afterthought as well. Yep. But it's drawn a difficult alley. So, it makes it a little bit tricky. And I'm sure, yeah, I think it's in the same boat as us. But looking at a lot of the Victorians, you know, I think quite a few of them won't stay out. Yeah. And I don't think it's a particularly strong bunch this year. So, I really don't know how it's going to pan out, to be honest with you. Yeah, it's all a bit up in the air, I'd say.
Speaker 2$3 million Victoria Derby, that's what you're there for. There's a lot of prize money to be won.
Speaker 13You've got to have a crack. And it might be the last time in my career that I've ever, you know, it's a favourite in a Victorian Derby. So, you just, as long as you fit well and healthy, you know, we'll be going around and doing our best.
Speaker 2Thanks for that, mate. Appreciate you coming on.
Speaker 13Pleasure. Thanks for having me.
Speaker 2There's Paul Massara. 18 minutes past nine. We'll take a break. On the other side of that, Benny Willis from My Racehorse will be joining us. Looking forward to that. Gator's not far away. Jack's just trotting up some cup horses as we speak. So, we might do Jack Turnbull after Gator this morning. So, Ben Willis from My Racehorse will be, my special guest in the studio next year on Giddy Up. Welcome back. This is Giddy Up. 21 minutes past nine with My Racehorse. You can own a debut winner racing on Cup Day. Head to MyRacehorse.com. Ben Willis from My Racehorse. They're in for another big day. They seem to be going every second week these days because that's how it's all panned out. They've had a big day on Everest Day where they got a couple of winners and those horses will be backing up once again. Mostly at Randwick, but they've just purchased this exciting galloper from Clayton Douglas' stable that our trial watchers were all over before it won there at Mornington on Saturday. I'll get to that in just a moment, but Ben's with us now. Ben, hello to you. Hello, Gareth. Is this the biggest weekend in racing? I know we say Everest was a big one, weekend, Caulfield Cup Day, Everest Day, but I've said this on a few occasions. There's nothing like Derby Day when you get set for Cup Week and now you can throw in the Golden Eagle.
Speaker 14I know, exactly. The thing I love about Derby Day and obviously the Everest does it as well, but the whole Melbourne Cup Week, it's that one time of the year that people not really following racing week in, week out actually come together and get around the sport and I think that's really important and seeing the massive crowds flock to Flemington, there's nothing quite like it, is there?
Speaker 2Yeah. So with all, how many owners, would you have at my racehorse?
Speaker 14We're tipping on 90,000 at the moment.
Speaker 290,000? Yeah. So if you did a poll of those 90,000. Yes. Because they're all racing. They would vote Giddy Up as their favourite podcast. Yes, 100%. I appreciate that. We get a few of them text in asking Gator and Mark Hunter and a few of their experts how their horses are going because they want to, like that's what the experience is all about. Yeah. But if you did a poll with the 90,000 people that are in the racehorse, and you're stable and they're all racing fans because obviously, why would they go into my racehorse if they weren't racing fans? What race would they want to win most?
Speaker 14Yeah. It had come down to two races, the Melbourne Cup or the Everest.
Speaker 2Okay, there you go.
Speaker 14I think they would be the two. Yeah. Yes, there would be a few for a Cox Plate as well. But I think it's those two or three races that would be coming up the most frequently.
Speaker 2You've had a Melbourne Cup runner, haven't you? We have. Yes.
Speaker 14He was the 2013, third fastest horse in the race, which was good. Yeah. Just fine.
Speaker 2But you're a winner anyway, I reckon. Yeah. If you have a Melbourne Cup. Oh, exactly. If you have a Melbourne Cup winner. Getting a horse into the race was outstanding. Yeah, runner, you're a winner. Yeah. And there's a lot of nervous connections at the moment trying to work out if they're getting a start, so you are, how much weight does he need to get into the race? It's part of the great game, isn't it? It's noisy to get in.
Speaker 14Yeah, yeah, definitely. And it's exciting. They do a great job finalising that field as well.
Speaker 2The Group 1 Golden Eagle, it's worth $10,000. It's worth $10 million. It's our richest race. Yeah. And you've got Decorum and Apocalyptic, both in excellent form. We just had Moods on with She's Alibi. He's quietly confident, you could say, with the $1.90 favourite there with bet $3.65. Can you beat her?
Speaker 14Look, I think she'll be tough to beat. Like, she's the class filly or mare in the race now, isn't she? And she's drawn an absolute peach in six. We'll get the right run. I think our horses are both, over the odds when you look at Bivak and Skyhawk and you look at the Silver Eagle and yes, Apocalyptic won, but Decorum crossed the line with those other two as well. So I think our horses are both great, um, each way chances.
Speaker 2Yeah. Um, how is the buildup towards a Golden Eagle? Yeah, it's good.
Speaker 14It's different. It was like, it took the jam out of our donut on Tuesday when the barrier draw came out and both horses landed in the car park. But I think it's still, it's still exciting. Um, as you said, both horses are in ripping form and they'll put in a good race and you know, that $10 million when you don't have to share it with a slot holder, it's a bit different to running in Everest, isn't it?
Speaker 2Yeah, it is the most valuable race in this country. And it's a
Speaker 14group one now as well. So, you know, for a mare like Apocalyptic, if she can add some black type to her CV there, it's great. Um, speaking of mares looking for
Speaker 2group one glory unleashing, she's been unleashing some brilliant, but, but, um, sectionals towards the back end of her races. She has to do it the Melbourne way of going, but she's trying to do it the Melbourne way of going. So, you know, I think it's a good race. I don't know if she would want pride, like if she wanted pride of Jenny in the race or not with her pattern.
Speaker 14I don't think anyone in their right mind would want pride of Jenny in the race if pride of Jenny is at her best. Um, and I don't think the stable would run her if she's not. So I was, yeah, we were pretty happy that she wasn't in there, even though she would have provided tempo and unleashing is a get back runner. Um, but yeah, you're right. Like she did run, I think it was the first time she was in the race. Um, but yeah, I don't know if she would want pride of Jenny in the race. So I was, yeah, I don't know if she would want pride of Jenny in the race. Um, but yeah, I don't know if she would 400 and 200 of the entire meeting on Everest day, which is crazy numbers. So she's, she's a good chance. She's did track work this week. The Melbourne way of running on a tighter circuit at Warwick farm, like Flemington will be a little bit easier for her. You would think, I think she's a great chance in there. She's bloody exciting to watch. She was an $80,000 purchase. So she's doing great things. Um, where did you get her from the Melbourne premier sale?
Speaker 2Yeah. It's been your favorite sale over the time.
Speaker 14It's hard to beat, um, the Gold Coast magic millions, isn't it? Like just because everything that comes. Yeah. Like every, the whole event, the week, the fun. Where have you had the most success? However, the 2024 magic million sale. Okay. That's where we got apocalyptic ninja, King Kirk, storm leopard for four stakes winners from eight yearlings. We bought. So that's pretty, who was your blood stock agent then? Damon Gabbity. I saw him the other day.
Speaker 2He was closely with the McAvoy's.
Speaker 14He always lived with the McAvoy's. He's a good man. Yeah. Yeah. He's, he's great. He's well-connected. He's very
Speaker 2well-connected. He's got a few gigs then, hasn't he these days? He's obviously, isn't he? Like he works for the McAvoy's. He's got connections in WA and now he's that, oh, when he's got a resume like that with my racehorse.
Speaker 14He does a fantastic job for us. Him, Emma, myself, and a few other people. We sort of run this blood stock operation and yeah. Emma Friedman. Yeah. Emma Friedman and Damon Lee. The show and he is very good.
Speaker 2People probably don't realize that about Emma, do they? Like she's such a, she's one of them. She's really my favorite media talent. Like I love watching her. I think she's been so great for racing. She's got that ability to get people to relax when she interviews them. Um, obviously she's got a great background in, in, in the racing game with her family, as you well know. Um, but she's very good at picking horses and she's got a good eye. Um, and she works closely with you. Well, that's what I hear anyway.
Speaker 14Yeah, yeah, no, she does. She's very, she's very good. Um, she has a great eye for yearlings, trialers, race horses. Um, yeah, just very well educated and well connected and well connected. Definitely. Now we're lucky to have her on.
Speaker 2Can Ninja win the Russell boarding?
Speaker 14I think he can. Yeah. I think, um, the barrier doesn't help, but also the favorites haven't really drawn well. Their grafter burners has drawn wide. Jimmy stars draw. Right. Headwalls drawn three, but he gets back. So he's going to need some luck. I think Ninja at 13 would have loved six, seven, eight, but he'll go forward. He gets some good galloping room out there. Plenty of time to find a spot in running.
Speaker 2Yeah. Um, he's been a great horse as well. How did he, how did you go Everest day? Um, explain that experience for us because you had a big day with a few winners.
Speaker 14Yeah. I was still walking through the tunnel to try and see the Everest cause there were so many people in the mounting yard. I actually barely got to see the race. Um, but I thought he ran really well. He was, he was a length and a half to two lengths off the winner. Um, tempted. I thought he did a great job. He came out of that run. Well, the day itself was the best day we've ever had on the track for sure.
Speaker 2Yeah. Two winners. Yeah. What does that do for your business?
Speaker 14Obviously it's the best marketing that you can do. It is you need. And that's why, you know, we're talking about the bloodstock team. It is so important that we get good horses to run in those races and, and hopefully win those races because it drives credibility and people, people want to be part of that fun and that excitement and that journey. And so, yeah, it's, it is really helpful when they get over the line.
Speaker 2I get this question a lot. And we had a few questions coming through yesterday when there was selling Vorban and I think, um, Wine Dark Sea, I think they took that off the online sale, but like, so mounting our tickets. So do they go into a draw with you guys? How does that all work?
Speaker 14Yeah. So we'll have, let's say 2000 owners in a horse and we might get 20 or 30 mounting yard tickets. That's sort of standard, which is fair enough. Exactly. So we will go out to that ownership group and say, enter this lottery. If you want tickets, it's like going into the ballot at MCC to grant final tickets. They go in the draw, random probability. We just, the system pulls out 20, 30 owners and they get their mounting yards. Yeah. How good. And then the race clubs are really good as well because they're like, like there are some days that are an exception, like, uh, Everest day, Derby day, the cup carnival, but most race days, there's so much room on course. So the race clubs are really good at giving us extra members or GA ticketing to get as many people in as possible to just watch their horse run.
Speaker 2Yeah. Yeah. Which is understandable really.
Speaker 14It's good for them.
Speaker 2People that they can get to the races, enjoying the race day experience is better off for their club and it is, and the game. A hundred percent. Um, um, he got another run at round with, uh, with BM Baker. Yeah. More should.
Speaker 14More should. Yeah. Race three. I think he's drawn barrier five. I'd trade up his barrier for one of our other horses, but look, he's first up. He's got 61 kegs. He'll, he'll run well, but I don't necessarily think he'll be a winning chance, but he'll be running very well.
Speaker 2Yeah. Um, and then you've got, um, this horse that you just purchased in Regal Harry. Did you say his debut? Yeah, it was sensational. We had everyone tipping him. Um, all of our smart trial watches identified him from the trial. And he, he paid pretty nicely in the end. Like he drifted slightly, but he won with a leg in the air and he pricked his ears on the line. Um, I don't think he cost Clayton Douglas much either. So obviously he's been able to get this horse to go and progress pretty quickly, but he looks like he's a stakes horse. Definitely. That's what we're thinking.
Speaker 14Yeah. Like the figures and times he ran as well would support that. And Clayton has that big opinion of him as well, where he thinks he's a stakes class horse in waiting. Um, his debut, his trials were awesome. They were actually trying to keep him quite hidden, but the horse was just going way too good that they ended up getting him to the track and he won as he did. He ran the fastest 1200 meters of the meeting. He fastest final 200. These figures were very good. And now he'll go to cup day in the listed Amanda Elliott over 1400, um, for three-year-olds. And yeah, he could be a really good chance there. He's got a great turn of foot, that horse, as you saw there. He was kind of level with scoot at about the final furlong and then just put it to the sword quite comfortably. So how do you get involved with that horse? You go to myracehorse.com and you'll see Regal Harry. You can also scan the QR code that's up on the screen. Okay. There you go. That'll take you to his offering page, but he is $180. Yeah. Maybe there's an early bird special on at the moment where you can get him a little bit cheaper than that, but shares will run out on him.
Speaker 2So how many would you like? So, um, you're purchasing, you're purchasing. You're purchasing this horse. They're micro shares, of course. So you get $180 for micro sharing in Regal Harry.
Speaker 14Um, when does it cut off? Once we set, so we bought 35% of him. So that gets us the colors on the horse. And so that'll be 3,500 shares at 0.01%. Yeah. So once we've sold those 3,500 shares, so we do have 90,000 owners. They don't all buy straight away. Do they get first option? We just put it up on the site and whoever wants first. Crack at it can, but we launched him yesterday and we've already sold over 50% of him.
Speaker 2So you better be quick.
Speaker 14He's on a very fast run, right? Yeah. He should be sold out by Derby day. I think. Yeah.
Speaker 2So you just scan there and it takes you straight to it. Exactly. If you're watching us on TV, if you're not watching us on TV and you're listening to us on the radio or on the app, um, you just got to go to myracehorse.com.au and away you go. That's it. Um, it's exciting, mate. So have you got anything in the breeders cup?
Speaker 14We do actually. We've got, um, a horse called. We've got a horse called Barchio in the breeders cup sprint. Yes. Um, this is our American business. Uh, yeah, he, he's going quite well. I think he won on, um, Royal Ascot as well.
Speaker 2Have you outdone the Americans?
Speaker 14I hope they're not listening. Yeah. I think we've got them covered. Look, they've won. They've had two stars. They've won a Kentucky Derby. They've won a Kentucky Derby and a pre, um, what was it? Was it the Preakness Stakes? Yes. Which sees the gray. Yeah. So both of those horses have gone to start. Barchio is going quite well. Yeah. They had another horse straight. No chance. who won a few sprints. um it's probably pretty even at the moment but they had a couple of year head start on us we've
Speaker 2got him i think if i think you've claimed to my mail is hey paulie what were you just saying there because he's a proud italian of course
Speaker 10well you know gareth that you always talk about my dating and love life yes how's it going it's going going along well now but sure yes as you gentlemen would rightly know means kiss in italian oh there you go that's correct yeah so maybe uh you learn something every day exactly right bacho means kiss in italian imagine
Speaker 14all of our american team will be giving each other lots of kisses if it gets up that's exactly right there's a few questions
Speaker 2coming through can you buy if i wanted to buy something for my like my old man can i do that yeah on his behalf yeah what
Speaker 14your best way to do it is buy it out of your own account and then email our customer support team okay you support at my racehorse.com and they do a share transfer over to his account yeah additionally you could also just buy a gift card i say yeah it's
Speaker 2like two thousand dollars and they can get 10 horses exactly yeah
Speaker 14and do that it's a great idea so we do either share transfers if you want to buy the horse or you can just buy a gift card and give it to him
Speaker 2and they can redeem you know what i'm going to do that for christmas it's a great father's day
Speaker 14christmas day that's the best present ever it is because they don't pay another they don't pay any more 10 horses yeah you pay once that's it so it's like it's a great present and you have a code
Speaker 2so if you say a thousand dollars or 500 you they can monitor how much yeah yeah it just comes it
Speaker 14works like any gift card yeah yeah
Speaker 2gara yes just disappointed well you're sorry there's no more money on that card who got to it hey um if i gave you a hundred dollars ben
Speaker 14yes what would you do with it you know what i'm i'm gonna go the ninja unleashing double so
Speaker 2that's ninja in the russell boarding yep um and unleashing in the group one empire rose at flemington that's it beautiful we are to buy a few shares and regal harry harry if that gets up if there's any left in him you will be able to and so just if you're watching racing.com uh you can scan it with your camera and then you go straight to the the site otherwise go to my my racehorse.com.au follow the prompts and you can find um regal harry and away you go and you'll have a runner um on cup day in the mandalas that's it hey we appreciate your time as always mate um we'll catch up with you down the track no doubt but good luck this weekend likewise thank you very much there's ben willis for my racehorse david gately to join me next for gator's game plan ahead of derby day and golden eagle day
Speaker 1join the conversation text us on 0 4 9 7 3 6 7 3 6 live across australia this is giddy up with gareth hall on giddy up it's time for gator's game plan with david gately you know the
Speaker 2drill now for gator's game plan this is one of the biggest of the year as we sit down with our coach david gately and we prepare for derby day and golden eagle day so we go through the key categories with gator our first athlete that we are picking as our best bet it's the key player the toughest race to work out the d-day horse the highlight race and then the night watchman which is a winner in either the last race in sydney and melbourne and then it's up to you the selectors to ask the coach skater a question as you prepare to try and back a heap of winners on the this saturday and let's welcome in the star of the show david gately hello gator
Speaker 15and a very good morning to you mr hall yes um bring on derby day and there's two good races in sydney too which
Speaker 2is good yeah um we just had ben willis on for my racehorse and i'm just having a look at your uh oz racing email um oz racing form.com and uh geez you've been kind to the my racehorse horses this weekend he was he had a big smile on his face pretty boy well i
Speaker 15hope he likes six placings yes
Speaker 2yes yes um and it's a big week for you mate because you're just dominating as well everywhere you look channel nine um obviously working for sky racing you're a man in demand
Speaker 15well long may it continue i think uh i might uh upgrade to someone better looking soon and luckily for me ryan gosling's really not into racing he's more a movie sort of guy so we're pretty safe on that front for the
Speaker 2short term comparing yourself to ryan gosling are you the ryan gosling of the racing industry gate is that what you're trying to say i know suze is a lucky girl yeah but
Speaker 15yeah oh look i think it's a fair comparison either that or a tennis ball i can't work out um which one
Speaker 2all right then the um best bet this weekend the key player who is the first equine athlete that you are tipping um this weekend or you are picking in your side yeah first
Speaker 15picked first magnet on the board race two number one regal ambition who was obviously a brilliant winner at corfu at 1400 they went to the mile i was pretty keen on her sort of hoping for a level playing field yeah so um yeah bendigo was no good for us
Speaker 2yesterday like come on cup day yeah it was hard to make up ground anyway
Speaker 15yeah no i think absolutely we need to get better at that um same story along the week before so and i saw i saw it coming both weeks and because it happens every year protect the ground inside um track looks amazing great cover grass oh blah blah all we want is a level playing field and if you can't do it find someone who can and and if if you can't do it then can can someone call them out on it why does everyone just go oh no it's fine you know there's no governing body to say to protect punters and um and also if you're an owner seven of the eight horses can't win
Speaker 2yeah and that that's the that's the problem really isn't it like i had a few people who owned horses there yesterday at bendigo and a few in the cup as well um and they rock up and then and they know that they're no chance all of a sudden insane that barclay square did finish towards the back end and cut the corner but it is um it does make this game tougher and i guess that we have to put up with it we've been putting up with it for a little while but i don't know what they need to do there and we've said this all along um maybe they need to have everyone come together and try and work out a different plan um to help each other out
Speaker 15well things won't change if no
Speaker 2one wants to change
Speaker 15it if your priority is the track looking amazing these tracks and and not racing fairly then fine keep going with it but then punters will eventually get sick of it um you know they've got enough against them as it stands with taxes and percentage markets and scratching epidemic and jewel acceptors and um that that we if you can get a level playing for it at least i think they're at least they're a chance to back their judgment and enjoy the sport but um as i say i saw i saw it coming everything i tipped almost was i thought would settle first three same at geelong um but it's not about us adjusting it's about us as an industry getting it right and then someone overseeing it saying hey let's protect the punters first perhaps the track doesn't look immaculate doesn't have a great cover grass but plays fairly ask every punter i reckon 100 out of 100 would take that yeah i
Speaker 2totally agree with everything that you've said just there gator um in saying that regal ambition is our best at flemington or your best race two number one yeah we did go off track a little bit we took a couple left and just on that how do you think flemington and ramwick will play it's a difficult predicament once again for liam o'keefe with the rain that is predicted on saturday how much does he have to water it's um it's a guessing for him a little bit but he's got to try and guess
Speaker 15right yeah that's right and look that's that's really a challenge but um i mean the thing with liam is there we know stone unturned to get it right that's for sure um you know he you know he's into i think he's got the bureau on speed doll um there and so it's it's a best guess scenario for him but i'll leave that in his very capable hands from our perspective punters um rail true true again it was interesting last week wasn't it so inside held up really well early even a couple of straight races which was a little surprising but then things leveled up and by the last three races all the winners were down the middle of the track so trifecta in all three of those races so it sort of swung around and and i'm expecting you know a level playing field um with that to the traffic inside i'm not expecting uh mad on paces saturday that's for sure and it's
Speaker 2going to be interesting as well because the rail is true again at flemington and this is the first time that we've ever had consecutive saturdays with the rail being true after having that cox plate meeting there last week because the rail has to be out three meters and that's the the furthest it can go out there on tuesday so um yeah i wonder if they'll be getting off the fence there at flemington on a saturday afternoon more than likely but
Speaker 15let's let's monitor those early races and you've got to keep adjusting as we saw last week yeah ranwick yep uh rail back true yeah no worries there you'll be able to run on i just wouldn't make my run on the inside right now i'm not going to run on the rail i think um that when the rail's back true that hard inside is generally not the a plus spot so the
Speaker 2key player is regal ambition that's the first magnet on the board now we work out uh the toughest um race now on the programs in sydney and melbourne and the long division races the group one tab empire rose with no pride of jenny lady shenandoah is now the 2.40 favorite with bet 365 surfer bird on the quick back up at 460 concord connie six dollars idle fly ten dollars unleashing at 10 sass appeal 13 salty pearl 20 to 1 silica 40-1, Pillow Fight, 40-1, Ponder Lowey, 70-1, and Jenny Maltzabella at 100-1 here. Gator, are you with Lady Shenandoah?
Speaker 15Yeah, look, she's obviously a winning hope. I certainly think she's short enough, but that was a terrific win in the turret, wasn't it, against the males with 58. How was her tenacity that last 100? You need a will to win in this game unless you're simply better than them, but none of these are, so that's a trait that we need. Interestingly, when she clashed over a similar race in the autumn, she was beaten. She split Idlefly, who beat her, and Treasure of the Moment. So that obviously brings Idlefly into it off a couple of forgive runs, and I think it tells you that Lady Shenandoah is beatable at the price. Obviously, Surfing Birds Fly and beat a couple of group one winning males last week, if you don't mind. And Unleashing and Concord, Connie, the fascinating ones, eight to ten to one, and they're both very good, I think. Obviously, Wait for Ages is a challenge, but I'm going back to last year when Idlefly was that up-and-comer. They backed her as if she was unbeatable. Tens into 380, she underperformed, but then came out. It's one of those things where punters got it wrong but got it right in the end because she came out and beat them in the autumn. So, yeah, it's an interesting one. I expect Unleashing and Concord, Connie, to measure right up, and they go in everything for mine, but, gee, it's a tough race.
Speaker 2So you're telling us Idlefly, it's like selecting a player that didn't get a kick when you thought he needed to get a kick, or she needed to get a kick in a game of footy, and she didn't live up to those expectations that day, but you persisted with her or he, and they went on to kick five goals the next match. But that's no good to us if we backed them to win that game.
Speaker 15Yeah, I understand that, but I think what you have to factor in is what conspired or what were the circumstances around the reason that athlete, whatever the sport is, that underperformed to your expectation. And in fairness to her, this prep, you know, she was probably in the wrong race second up, stayed at a shorter trip. She'd been never on the track her last two, and they just don't win that often, especially at the top level when they're covering that sort of ground. So is she flying? I'm not sure, but I'm hedging my bets she's fifth pick and in the quaddie.
Speaker 2So unleashing is your top selection at $10 from Surf and Bird, Lady Shenandoah, Concord Connie, and Idle Flyer makes up your top five there. The D-Day horse is in the Russell boarding. It's Ninja, who's coming out of an Everest gator. Please explain why.
Speaker 15Well, I think he's really talented, but he can, let's say, you know, have a little perhaps. Yeah, no, I think he has a little thing between the ears. He is, which is a good place to do it, I guess. But look, he was terrific winning first. That wasn't a fast time. Forgive that second up run. It was a non-event back in 64 wide. You know, they always win. Copped a bump at a key stage at the Everest. I think should have finished closer. I think getting to 1300 might be the key to him. He's three for three at the trip. I think he was every bit as good as Jimmy Starr and Headwall in the Everest, and he's a better price than them. But look, I'm happy to back in. And if they're too good for him, I'll cop that on the chin.
Speaker 2Yeah. 1300 metres for him.
Speaker 15No problems. Three for three at the trip.
Speaker 2Yeah, perfect. That probably says it all. You've got Jimmy Starr in for second, Headwall for third. 1300 has to be a concern for him, doesn't it?
Speaker 15Well, he's sort of racing like it's okay. Yeah. But, yeah, to me it is still, well, it's a box that's unticked. Simple as that. So we don't know until after the race. He did loom to win the Everest, and, you know, did he have enough right on the line? Maybe, you know, you can argue that. To the end of time. But, you know, they're the A pluses. So, again, I couldn't tip him on top based on that, but he's in the quad.
Speaker 2We're going to come back and have a chat about our highlight race this weekend. In fact, it's become the highlight races, because there's four Group 1 races that we have to look forward to this weekend, three at Flemington and one in Sydney. So we'll come back with a look at those races next with David Gately for Gators Gameplan. Welcome back to Giddy Up, Gareth Hall with you, David Gately as well. Our highlight races. We'll start off with the Coolmore. This is a beauty down the straight there at Flemington on Saturday afternoon. It's going to be interesting to see who starts favoured. I reckon the West Indies are going to be the best. The weather might decide that. If the rain comes, it'll be the next episode. If it doesn't come, St. Gothard might fight him for favouritism. At the moment, the next episode's at 380. St. Gothard at 440. He's been clearly the best back since the fields were officially announced there yesterday. Totono Glow at 5. Natural Flings into 650. Pembrey at 11. Paradoxium at 16. Underfocus at 16. And then Doubt Time at 26. Mbube at 29. Still will. Stretton Rule at 40 to 1. Ali Barber at $61. The Machine Gun at $61. And then Marfiano at 70 to 1. And Stretton Rule is the outsider at 100 to 1 here, Gator.
Speaker 15Yeah, what a race. It is each and every year. And so going into the race, I was pretty keen. I thought the barrier jaw would decide, and a bit of weather, would decide which way I went. I wasn't overly concerned weather-wise because both the next episode and Totono Glow are well and truly proven on the track. They're wet and even heavy ground. So, I just wanted to see the barrier jaw. And when the next episode drew 14 into Totono Glow 4, the choice was made for me. I just can't imagine by race six on Derby Day that they'll be anywhere other than middle of the track and beyond. And he just should get the perfect run with clear air, sits off them. And you know he's going to be strong late based on what we saw first out where he ran down Natural Fling right on the line. He's never been at 1200. But gee, it only takes a couple of minutes. But gee, it only looks a positive, doesn't it? So, he's on top. So, Totono Glow, I didn't have anything between them, to be honest, but the barrier jaw has tipped me one way over the other. No surprise there's big money St. Gothard, given the Wolvoven form and the fact that it's Waller and Majamak, right? So, I think that's a key factor with that and the history in this race. So he's third pick. Just hasn't seen wet as your reference there.
Speaker 2And then you've got Natural Fling and Pembrey, the two fillies, four and five. And Nick Ryan gave us a good push for doubt time. You've got him in your top six there. We might have to have something each way on him, Gator, if we like him at a price. It's a big price.
Speaker 15Yeah. Yeah, he was terrific in the Sapphire. I think if he put himself in the race, the first hundred, he probably wins that. The challenge for him is turning around a couple of lengths from the Danehill. I just wonder if he's better on drier than wetter, but I guess we're still building a
Speaker 2profile him. The Derby's an interesting one. It's the other group one that we haven't had a chat about yet at Flemington. Call me, Andy. Andy, I'm going to ask you a question. If you listen to Paul Massari, he should be 20 to 1. He's nervous about the backup. It's been an afterthought. They weren't coming, but then they looked at the field and thought, geez, this is a wheat field for a $3 million raise. We've got to have a crack. I reckon Stormy Marco could be in the same boat, whether it's an afterthought or not. Most likely is at five. We'll chat to Chris Waller tomorrow. True Rebel 8.50, King's Nets at 11, Machete at 13, Hierarchy at 13, Valis at 15, Skure at 15, ICU at 17, Cignetti at 19, True Tone at $23 here, Gator. Who wins the derby?
Speaker 15absolutely no idea but um uh what i'm gonna do is back a couple at a price and um that i think will definitely stay the trip uh and will um most likely uh yeah sort of run well i mean look a lot of the forms intertwine with each other in in the lead-ups to this even the philly you can tie into icu and a few of those so i'm going to tip skewer and back he and valus they both draw a little lawfully, but I think they'll go forward to offset that. And Skewer settled better last time. I thought he was really brave. I like his strength through the line again. And Vallis has run well to blind Rays. A few of these haven't been able to manage that. So they're the two I've got, but gee, there'll be a few in the quaddie.
Speaker 2Your numbers there are Skewer the 7, Vallis the 6, Stormy Marco the 2, Kingsnitz the 4, Cormier the 1, True Rebel the 3, and ICU year the nine so it's a tough derby who knows what's going to happen in that classic there on saturday news is coming through we mentioned that there was two horses that were waiting um confirmation whether they had passed the scans or not for the lexus melbourne cup i've just been told by managing part owner ozzy kerr that saint george has been given the tick of approval so saint george has been given the all clear to compete in this year's melbourne Cup. The only horse that we're waiting on now is Stinger Glass, the Japanese horse. And we should know, I reckon, we should have some details regarding that at around lunchtime today. It's 9.58, time for a break. This is Gator's Game Plan And all thanks to Bet365. Continue to send in your messages on the Garrett's Horse and Hound text line, 0499 736 736. That's 0499 736 736. Of course, Giddy Up always brought to you by Bet365. They've got some wonderful offers this weekend, which I'll tell you about in just a moment. But let's have a look at the other group one across the weekend. And it is in Sydney. It's the Golden Eagle. And with Bet365, She's Alibi is the odds-on favourite, which is no surprise there. She's come up with a lovely gate for Saturday's big race. And Peter Moody says she is ready to go. She'll travel up later today. And at the moment for the Golden Eagle, she's $1.80. Bivouac at $7. Autumn Boy at $10. We've got Skyhook at $12. Amazing Journey out to $21. Apocalyptic at $20 to $1. Decorum, $26. Mr. Miller, $26. Regal Award, $31. Attica at $30 to $1. Within the Law at $34. Here, Gator, would you take $1.80 about She's Alibi?
Speaker 15Yeah, look, probably, you know, if I was out there sort of socially having a fun day, I would say I would take anything that or better, preferably better. But, you know, yeah, best horse, a good place to start. It's just unprecedented, certainly for her, coming back sharply in trip, isn't it, with three weeks between runs. And it's not like she's going to be able to do that. It's not like she quickened off a dime at 2,000 metres. It took her an hour and a half to wind up. So that's the concern. And that's probably why you're getting the price that you're seeing, you know, near even money. So, you know, off that, she wins one in every two, right? So, yeah, so it's a quandary for me. Best horse, box ticked, back in trip could be a problem.
Speaker 2What about the speed in this race? Moots was worried that Baywack might be able to get an easy lead in front, but surely not in a $10 million race.
Speaker 15Well, he runs fast anyway. So even if he's a solo leader, he'll run along as he did last start. And I liked his fight. If you were potting his run, I thought he was brave when he was collared, you know, 1,500, the end of that, that might sort of really mean regular awards. The other one who has great natural speed is clearly a work in progress between the years there. But I'm expecting a truly run Golden Eagle, absolutely.
Speaker 2I think the key to Baywack is he gets to go to the lead, going through his gears, and he's not at his top, a bit like what we saw with Land Legend and Light Infantry Man a little bit. Like, if they're at their top from the start, then it's difficult for them to finish off. But if he can just go to the front off his own terms, he's always going to be hard to beat with the sectionals that he can reel off, say, the last 800 metres.
Speaker 15Yeah, 100%. And, you know, we can absolutely relate that to humans. If you're at the top of your threshold at the start of any test of endurance, you watch what impact it has on you at the end. It won't be good.
Speaker 2No, you've taught me that. I remember when I was training for a marathon, I said, Gator, I was just flying in the early part, doing like four-minute Ks, and then I just hit a brick wall. I just didn't time my run whatsoever. So, yeah, you can try. If you're going to run 5Ks, go flat out. Run the quickest you can in the first K and see how you finish off. But that's just common sense at the end of the day, Gator, isn't it?
Speaker 15Well, it's not necessarily common sense, but it's a learned skill, I'd imagine. That's why I guess there's 100, you know, running coaches and so on to help us work that out and produce the best, our maximum energy over that distance. It needs to be spread. And that's why people who say, you know, ride them forward, ride them here, they're not motorbikes. Mate, you've got to, they've got to suit their individual profile. And yeah, your first K really should be your slowest.
Speaker 2She's Alibi, Skyhook, you've got him for second. Apocalyptic at a prize for third. And then within the law, fourth, Biwak, fifth, Autumn Boy, sixth in Regal Awards, seventh. So you've got some value around She's Alibi there if you're playing multiples.
Speaker 15Yeah, so I think it's a great race to play. You know, perhaps some exotics try first four, even the real value will come if, you know, if she doesn't quicken in time and can't reel them in, She's Alibi. And that really opens the door for a couple at 20, 30 and even 40 to one. So that's why I'll be playing the race.
Speaker 2Yep. This is Giddyup. All thanks to Bet365 and races one, two and three on Derby Day at Flemington. If your runner doesn't win, you'll receive a bonus bet back. That's right. Miss the winner and you'll receive a bonus bet back. Head to the rewards page in your Bet365 app to opt in. Eligible customers, only terms and conditions apply. And we appreciate everyone chiming in and participating in our conversations. It's all about you at the end of the day. The select is to ask Gator a question to help you back plenty of winners this weekend. Hi, Gareth. This is from Bar Plates. He's a regular. Keelan Gator's thoughts on Flemington race eight, number one. Great salty pearl.
Speaker 15Yeah. So her form ties in, you know, through a few of these, through Shadovar and Co. The reality is there's probably a couple that are a little bit stronger than her and faster than her at 1600, especially at weight for age. But that's why she's at the price she is, I guess.
Speaker 2What about Gigi's mistruth in the last?
Speaker 15Yeah, an interesting one. Obviously, a forgive run last time, blowing the start on that track was, you know, your race was pretty much over. She didn't, didn't savage the line, but I'm happy to, to forgive that run. Okay. And a couple of close up group ones against the males prior gives her a live hope here.
Speaker 2Okay. I thought you'd nearly start to see other people with Gigi's mistruth, but you're hanging in there. Sixth pick. Yep. Hey, Gator, like Hedley Grange at round week to have better luck and win also like, we'll start off with Hedley Grange. Your thoughts there?
Speaker 15Yeah, look, it's a, it's a tough one. It's a tough race for Hedley, but the thing is for him, he's very, very genuine and tough and he has had a couple of forgive runs. So he's more an exotic player for me.
Speaker 2What about Gallant's son? Moods gave this a good push. In fact, with his hundred dollar staking plan, he says, let's back Gallant's son. His third up gets the 1200 metres at Flemington there on Saturday. That's race four, horse number six with Bea Shin aboard.
Speaker 15Yeah, I'm forgiving the Manicato miss. Um, and, uh, in the Corfewood sprint. I was right with a key rival. That's fine. Ends day did place in a new market here. So yeah, in the mix for me, another one who's six feet.
Speaker 2Brett goes, I've just signed up to get his group one service. Can you ask him if I'll receive Saturday's tips? Usually they're Wednesday night. Aren't they Gator? Is this a different service? No, no. Wednesday night.
Speaker 15Um, so yeah, no, if he, if he signed up after last night, yes. Um, just shoot me an email and I'll forward.
Speaker 2So [email protected]. I was racing form. And as I said, it's the way to go because you get the Bible, forget about best bets. Um, I was racing form. You hit the Melbourne and Flemington, um, um, tips. You get six or five horses that he likes in each race. Sometimes I with an explanation why, um, it's perfect for us battlers. So that's I was racing form.com Gator. What are your thoughts on quick finish? Being the first Philly since 1990 to run in the Vic Darby last winter was 1923. Isn't this what the Oaks is for? That's from Greg. Not when there's $3 million an offer, Greg. Speaker 15Yeah. And then I might, uh, they might back up anyway, but yeah, I'm going back to Caulfield 19th of September. Um, so quick finish was able to lead and beat ICU. Um, I think I see was probably the slightly better run, but it ties the form in ICU went to Geelong and was arguably the best run in that race machete beat him. Um, and then ran well in the superimposed behind Valis and code. They're here. So it ties in.
Speaker 2Yeah. The first race. Can you ask how he thinks the roaring sun will measure up in the carbine club? Merv says, looks a nice type while it dominates this race every year. Thanks. That's for Murph. Good on you Murph.
Speaker 15Yeah. Yeah. No, it's, it's tends to be a, a C waller race. Doesn't it? The carbine club. He knows they know the right horses to target and, and I tend to win it a lot. He was terrific. I thought in the same race as key rival here, Glen or key, the winner of that race, graffiti tycoon was a dollar 50. Um, and boasts a second to Mr. Miller, who's a pretty good horse. He's ran well in a group one Epsom. So roaring sun, you have to think 1600 or suit. Yeah. I think he's a winning hope fourth pick.
Speaker 2So what we've learned in that race at Flemington so far, and this is our job here on giddy up to provide information to try and help you back winners. Um, Ozzie Kerr's got Jimmy star and a few big chances across the weekend. When I asked him for his hundred dollars staking plan, he didn't really hesitate. He went with Hunter hinged in that first race at Flemington. Mcdonald and wallet combined. And it's concerning when the second favorite in high falls and he's trying to Jane Shane Jackson says that we're going to nominate him for that three-year-old race on cup day, and then we're going to weigh up, which we think a better race is for him basically. So he's the second favorite. You'd probably want a little bit more confidence coming from the second favorite, um, or their camp anyway, ahead of a race like that.
Speaker 15Yeah, it's right. He's he's looked, there's a number of exciting horses in this race. Um, It was really the race that Eliana emerged fangirl. emerged yeah but before the race we didn't know how good they were so it can unearth a really good one and some of these have only had two or three career starts so yeah high four was interesting runner um i'm sort of hoping they'll wait for cup day but we'll see what
Speaker 2happens so if you if you were um the racing manager for shane jackson that's what you would recommend i haven't seen
Speaker 15the fields for cup day but
Speaker 2it's got to be easy in this one it does yeah um ryan's got nothing on you gator your pockets would be heavier than his for sure 100 that's ryan gosling we're talking about yeah yeah um as we move on here we'll remove that one hey g unit can you ask gator dog about swain's day and race four on saturday now this is the horse that was a former kiwi now with the archer balls sways and day is it 15 dollars run on well first up on the fence that day at caulfield also thought we'll just go and ask about that horse first of all
Speaker 15yeah i think he's a great roughy he's uh one of our better roughies on the day i was racing fam i think he's about 15 bucks uh he was back and wide with no trail caulfield the race was one inside plus he's not a thousand meter horse yeah he still hit the line anyway interestingly he's clashed with hanky alpha in the past new zealand i went back and another look at that race he he beat that horse sort of fair and square hanky alpha copped a little bit about half a balk at the hundred but swain s uh swain's day beat him um you know quite comfortably and we saw what hanky alpha did on heavy ground at flemington looked brilliant so
Speaker 2good roughy i think yeah that's a good roughy so around the 16 chance i think that's ways and day and then so i think that's how you pronounce that horse in the first race at flemington which Mitch wants to know if that Gallup is over or not. It's at $41 there with Bet365, trained by Trent Busset and Natalie Young.
Speaker 15So it's named after Tim Zura, the wicketkeeper, surely. I don't know where you were going. It does look a bit like Scrabble Prog, Tim. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2I apologise. Probably one of my favourite cricketers then, obviously.
Speaker 15Yeah, clearly. Not one with a photo in the bedroom. But look, I thought he ran quite well last time. I actually gave him a hope at a big price, but he went back at Caulfield over those 20 races. So, you know, unless you're Winx. Yeah. I thought he ran quite well, but I'm not sure he can win this, but he can win a nice race. So would you back him? No. Not at 40 to 1 in this race, but if he could run a really nice fifth, bob up at 12 to 1 somewhere else, I'd load up.
Speaker 2Thoughts on Sassapilgate. It was huge behind changing colour at the last start, and she'd have been $6 or less if they'd gone to the Empire rose you're getting nearly 18 for her on saturday that looks obvious your thoughts there it's a good
Speaker 15call um the query for her is the wet you know um if if the rain comes it doesn't advantage her at all she'd love one of those caulfield geelong bendigo rose hill rail out yeah tracks wouldn't
Speaker 2she yeah yes so there's no real speed in the vanity gator and 1600 back to 1400 looks troubled to me this one's whoever this is no name 643 i think they're having a little bit of a crack at you gator regarding your best bet on the program um well let me tell you
Speaker 15she hasn't won yet and she hasn't lost either so let's see um there's certainly a way to find out they'll race each other uh i am aria you know set up quite a strong speed last time didn't she yeah and with the likes of beautiful you and miss dividend i think there's enough speed for her and plus it's flemington so they can sort of blend into it if she's within three or four lengths as they straighten um i'd be really confident
Speaker 2gator what do you make of blue dream in the vanity race two at flemington
Speaker 15uh she'll be back last on imagine blue dream um and you know i'm not sure she can run past regal ambition but it's not as if she's uh she's a thousand to one here she's about you know 13 14 dollars and um i'm just looking at her her last uh run she was brilliant really a thousand to 1400 Start 3 is not textbook.
Speaker 2No. Morning, gents. What a time of the year it is, 100%, whoever that is. Gator, what are your thoughts on Samarell in Race 5 in Sydney?
Speaker 15Yeah, another one who's not out of it. I was surprised she was double figure odds. This is one of those benchmark 78s, which is most of the card. And this race might fall away a bit. I'm sort of, I think the advantage for her would have been if Perisher went to the other race. It does make a few of these, the task for a few of these a bit harder, but I've got her in the game.
Speaker 2Sixth pick. You've got Cavalry at the top, Parish, your Botanical Boy, Columbus and Kulabar in your top five in front of Samaral. What else have you got here? King's Knits and the Derby, your thoughts there?
Speaker 15Well, I'm tipping Vallis and backing Vallis, you know, second pick and backing him. If that's the right form, he must have a case. You know, it was only his, what, fourth career start. He was a month between runs and beat that horse. so he's not going to get the same set-up, I don't think, but he acts like he'll stay fourth pick.
Speaker 2G'day, legends. I mean, legend and Gareth. Baron Gary looks ideally placed in the Sydney Cup. Thoughts, Gator Dog? That's from Benny from the Bull. Good on you, Benny boy.
Speaker 15Yeah, it was more a singular than a plural. I agree. Look, Baron Gary was too excellent Wednesday's prep. He measured right up, didn't he, last time? Just missed Anthracite, who came out and won again. The weights aren't everything, but they favour stars in their eyes. Barron Gary's second pick. All right, then.
Speaker 2My coffee's arrived, so that means I might have to take a break here in the McCafe downstairs. Well, under the team out there for getting me a coffee. Cappuccino with honey, they go, that's a weird order, Gareth, but I embrace it, really. Smart boy. How many rehearsals do you have to do for Channel 9, Gator?
Speaker 15I think we're only doing one this year, but it's all day tomorrow, so that should be a lot of fun.
Speaker 2So what do you rehearse? So you rehearse, like, this horse will win race one, It's also win race too. They really need you, Gator. I see what you're saying.
Speaker 15I'm not bright. Yeah. And it doesn't take a lot of brain power, which it doesn't. No, we just rehearse a few things at the screen and do a mock Manning Yard. And I can't tip the loser because they're not, you know, it's like that fake horse game at the tab, which we love.
Speaker 2Do they have our chemistry, Gator, or do you have to work on that in rehearsal?
Speaker 15Our chemistry? I think, yeah, no, I think that comes naturally for Ryan and myself.
Speaker 2we're going to take a break it's 17 minutes past 10 we'll come back with all of your questions next here for Gator's Game Plan join the conversation
Speaker 1text us on 0499 736 736 live across Australia this is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall
Speaker 2welcome back to Giddy Up Gareth Hall David Gately with you. We'll continue on the text messages or going through the text messages on the Gareth's Horse and Hound text line here. Questions for Gator. Hi, G and Gator. Love the show. Gee, since you read out all the text messages, it sounds like they come from the same person. Are you able to mix it up, reading all the texts in different voices? That's from Scotty B. I don't know where you're going there, Scotty B, but I don't know what else I can do, really. You're not going to get a job with the Simpsons, are you? No, no. Maybe Paulie Sebastiani can chime in, but I can't, I can't deliver different voices. I've tried in the past. I just look like an idiot. Really. Um, I wish I could do it. I wish I could do it. I was thinking about doing a stable male and me taking off the trainers with the way that they answered the questions like Mick Price's dog, Chris Waller, Kira Ma talk about, yeah, there could be a little bit of fun, but I just haven't been able to just to, you know, master that just jet gator. But I'm working on it behind closed doors. Yeah. Good morning, Gareth. Gator tipping, unleashing a ninja. Oh, boy, thank God. I'm sitting down. There you go.
Speaker 15Getting excited. I haven't won yet, but I think they'll run well.
Speaker 2Liam wants to know, morning, boys. Thoughts on race one at Flemington? Stars of Macedon. Thought it hit the line well last start. But, Liam, I reckon Star of Macedon hits the line well every start.
Speaker 15Yeah, look, she was terrific. He was terrific winning the maiden. Just, it looked a bit green, a bit lost around Caulfield to my eye and came again late against a pretty savage bias, that's to be said. Gets to the mile, gets to Flemington on the upward spiral, I think over the odds at around that $8.
Speaker 2What about Anthracite, raced nine at Randwick?
Speaker 15Yeah, well, he can win because he wins most time he runs at the moment. He's a ripper. He's got a great will to win. I thought he might have been a little vulnerable back in trip last time, but no, he was a bit too good. He beat many key rivals in this race prior to that at 2,000. A few of them have a weight swing, but weights aren't everything.
Speaker 2Yeah. Can you ask Gato about Cignetti's chances in the Derby?
Speaker 15Well, all the form ties in. So it's the same. You can make a case for most of these because they're all running against each other. They're all, you know, within a couple of lengths of each other. So who gets the right run? Who's going to run the marathon trip out? You probably get the result you want if it's in. Will you be worried if the rain comes for Eagle Ambition Gator? Yeah, well, it's a little bit of an unknown, isn't it? Checks notes, gee, Regal Ambition. Where did we go? She won on a soft seven, won her maiden in really good style, being in stipulation with a big gap to third. So at least handled, you know, a seven. Obviously worse than that's an unknown.
Speaker 2Hi again. The last time I was extremely confident of a horse winning a big race was incentivized in the Melbourne Cup and kept backing it. And I felt the same way about the next episode and I've continued to back it and surprised it has been blowing thoughts there. Well, you did get beat in the Melbourne Cup. Unfortunately, it was probably the biggest run, but you didn't win.
Speaker 15It's huge. It was huge. You deserved to win. And you pulled up sore.
Speaker 2Yeah, and he hurt himself. It was a massive run. So you got it right, but you got it wrong. Correct. Yeah, if you know what I mean. Yeah. Can the next episode, he's obviously a massive chance in that race, Gator, in the Cornwall.
Speaker 15Yeah, well, I mean, look, you sort of touched on it. He beat Natural Fling. He was only first up in Natural Fling, you know, so you'd have to think it's advantage him 1,200 and maybe improvement slash fitness to come.
Speaker 2He's a better horse than Natural Fling. I think he's proved that on a couple of occasions now, even though Kelvin won't admit it. What's Gator thinking of Autumn Boy on Saturday? That's from Daryl.
Speaker 15Well, the challenge for Autumn Boy is an obvious one. He can't ever really get close to She's an Alibi. If he could map out a program that would give him a hope, perhaps it would be She's an Alibi going 2,000 metres, not quickening and coming back in trip, though.
Speaker 2Yes. Yep. And they've all changed their minds. Chris Wallace changed his mind a little bit with Autumn Boy's preparation. Cox Plate. One day, Golden Eagle, the next. But he, understandably, just moving the magnets, really, with the plans because he saw what he saw was She's Alibi, and he thought, well, maybe she is vulnerable now. That's why he's decided to pivot and go back to Sydney. And I would have probably done the same, Gator, after watching that race there in the Might and Power. Morning, Gary and Gator. If you're saying it's a good week for running on at round week, can Jimmy still be a good bet? That's from Wigger. Also, after you answered that, what's Gator's favourite Will Farrell movie?
Speaker 15So, Jimmy Starr, yeah, look, he was quite good in the Everest, I thought. He kept closing without ever looking the winner, didn't he? Obviously, the Manicato win was terrific with the blinkers back on. So, I think he obviously won this race last year really well. I think it was at Rose Hill, wasn't it? But no worries, obviously, Randwick. I think it's actually advantaged him at Randwick. And drawing out, I think it will be a plus on Saturday. She's a winning hope and second pick. So, favourite Will Farrell cameo was probably his little cameo in Wedding Crashers, was it?
Speaker 2Yeah, very, yeah. Meatloaf! Where's the meatloaf? I love meatloaf now. Hi, Garrett. Not a lot spoken about amazing journey that probably gone under the radar as unraced in Australia, but stable seemed confident and have flown Safi out to ride in the Golden Eagle. And our man, Johnny O'Neill, declared it there on Monday on the means test. But the people that I ask say that it will need a miracle to be competitive against a horse like she's Alibi. But the man that can produce a miracle is Kiramar.
Speaker 15No doubt about that. So, it's hard to pot, you know, that stable. And it's an unknown, really. Look, I'm working around that horse, but we get stuff wrong.
Speaker 2Nepo Baby in the last, your thoughts there, Gator?
Speaker 15Yeah, good value hope. I liked the fight last time. I think she's a little bit underrated as an athlete and she'll be in the wider quaddie.
Speaker 2Feels like Christmas Eve, Gator and G. Love the show. Surely you think Santana Glo will love the straight at 1200 more than the next episode turn of Foot is Insane. That's from Ruben.
Speaker 15Yeah, look, I think she's a brilliant filly. She had her best for the day last time and blew them away. Went straight past Paradoxium. There's that form. And Boubet and Co. It's just a barrier. I had nothing between her and the next episode. Nothing between them. The only thing that was going to dictate who I tipped on top was the Gator.
Speaker 2Gator, tell me why Gentle's still paying $34 in race nine at Flemington. Draw him well in the flying. That's from Chuck.
Speaker 15Great trial. Really good return win. I think it was probably a bit lucky to win. It was probably the third or fourth best run in the race. And you wouldn't think we'll get a leader bias this time, but not out of it.
Speaker 2What about Warnie in the Damien Oliver?
Speaker 15Yeah, well, Tom Chambers is going to Sydney with Pericles. So, Warnie becomes sort of top pick. I think Gate One is, you know, I'm not sure how that's going to play out. But I think back to 1,400 is okay. Has a nice relative weight swing on a few. I'm going to back him in Kings.
Speaker 2Apocalyptic. You've given her a good each-way chance.
Speaker 15Yeah, look, I was a bit disappointed in myself last time leaving her out of the cotty because I thought she was going really well. Like, she had her a horse to follow. But I didn't think she could beat Skyhook and Baywalk. But she did. She beat them narrowly. But I think 1,500 is only an advantage to her. So, yeah, good, good roughy, perhaps.
Speaker 2I don't know if you mentioned this, but we have in hierarchy in the Derby. We've liked hierarchy for a while. Looks a lovely race for this son of Dabawi out of Colette.
Speaker 15Yeah, look, we'll certainly stay. Just a matter of how fast he does it.
Speaker 2Yeah. Is the Oaks favourite a moral gator? That's the David Payne filly. What's her name again? Proxima Dea. Yes.
Speaker 15Yeah, look, I think she deserves to be favourite. I mean, everything about her says she'll be strong at a marathon trip. She just seems to get stronger and stronger when she's under pressure, doesn't she? So she beat Global Goal, who won the flight stakes. They beat the boys there. So, look, I wouldn't be betting against her right now. Let's see what happens wakeful.
Speaker 2Well, she would have been a firm favourite for the Derby if she went down that path because she beat the two favourites pretty easily there in the spring champion stakes. So I'm surprised they might have not thought that she could back up and the extra few days would help her cause going to an Oaks. But, yeah, she would have been hard to beat in a Derby, let alone an Oaks. Hi, Gareth and Gator. They say that you should always forgive a horse on one bad run. Not that it was a bad run, but Russian Rock was heavily backed into 290 the other day. You're getting $35 in the Derby. Your thoughts? That's from Jeff.
Speaker 15He was well backed, wasn't he? And I was going into that race thinking, oh, I might have missed something here. I had the guy in fourth or fifth and he probably, I probably expected more. But I take that point on board that SP profile and backing is generally a reasonable guide. He's just got to turn the tables on a field. I'm not sure he can.
Speaker 2And Sonona and Jackie and James as well wants to know this. Can you ask Gator why he's gone against Lady Shenandoah and the Empire Rose?
Speaker 15Look, it just becomes a price thing. So I think she's best suited to the race. She's best suited at weight for age. She's been at 1600. Well, her sole defeat was that 0.8 link second to Idlefly when they last clashed. I just think she's beatable and she's $2.40.
Speaker 2But you know what, Gator, you're in the game of tipping winners as you always tell us. If you didn't know the market before you, because this market's been out for a little while and we've sort of known the field, before the field has been announced, would you have tipped Lady Shenandoah? Because most of the time you do not know the market.
Speaker 15Yeah, that's right. It's a good question and a good point. So the job really is to tip who I think will win. And I think all five of these that I've mentioned have a clear winning hope. And I guess. Idlefly has proved that because she's run past Lady Shenandoah at 1600. So I look at that and think, how can she be $2.40 and Idlefly and Unleashing and Surfing Bird who brings in, you can tie the four men. How are they, you know, $8, $10, $12. It just doesn't make sense to me logically, but I get some insurance through the quality if Lady Shenandoah wins. Um, hopefully I'm still alive.
Speaker 2Hey boys, best week of the year. Gator, what chance pounding in Sydney and the gold cup surely gets a run of the race. That's from Rick from the sunny coast.
Speaker 15Yeah, he's come back. Well, hasn't he? Yeah, he's really genuine. Um, he's closed off our latest with weight, um, against some real up and comers. Look, he's always a thread in these. I've got him forth pick, um, your parlay Gator, please. Alrighty. Better head to a fabulous Flemington. We are race two, number one, regal ambition into race six, number one, the next episode into race nine, number four, flying for fun will
Speaker 2be flying for fun if we're getting all three of those right
Speaker 15at Flemington, we
Speaker 2will surely fly for fun, deserves to win a race. Or was she one of those mares that always finds trouble?
Speaker 15I'll tell you after the race, I tipped her in this last year at a big price and she just found one better, but she ran really well.
Speaker 2Um, what about your best in Sydney? Gator race for
Speaker 15number four, real nation. She's got to jump cleanly. I think, and he's the best for the day. She, if he misses a start again, we're in trouble.
Speaker 2And I, Gareth, you mentioned that St George has now been passed to run the cup. Any update on the Japanese horse? Not yet. So soon as we know, bill, we'll let you know. Um, what does Gary think about point of law being favored in the Melbourne cup coming off a Geelong cup win on a leader bias track?
Speaker 15Yeah, look, he was, um, he was, he was really good though. It wasn't he, uh, you know, there were gaps behind. He ran time, you know, I think, um, on writing sort of ballpark ratings. He's he's around that media puzzle. all sort of areas. So all of that is likable. History says they don't win this great race at start number six, though. So that's in the back of my mind.
Speaker 2And on Monday, I was just thinking how we're going to do your segment. So we'll talk about, like, we'll debrief a little bit, but it's sort of like we're looking ahead to the grand final with the Melbourne Cup as well. So we'll have a look about what we need to look at and dissect there from Saturday's race meeting, because most of those horses are coming towards the end of their preparations anyway on Derby Day. We've got a few horses to follow, but you and I will concentrate on the Melbourne Cup, Gator, I reckon.
Speaker 15Yeah, good plan. Yeah, I'll have all that form done Sunday. I was racing email out Sunday, hopefully lunchtime, and I'll be prepped up to chat with you Monday, mate, and we'll game plan the Melbourne Cup away.
Speaker 2When will you make your decision on the Cup, or have you got a pretty good idea?
Speaker 15I've got a pretty good idea. You know, I'm just oscillating between probably four of them at the moment. Yes. And I think those four I'm really happy with, subject to barrier draws and CAT scans and all sorts of things.
Speaker 2Yes. Coach, are you going to tell us who those four are? Do we have to wait until, like, Sunday at the Select or Monday?
Speaker 15Well, two of them have been since our Cup preview shows. Yeah. By the way, thanks for not mentioning, I mentioned Kingswood in my Coffee Cup. But so defiantly trust your instincts are right at the top of my thoughts and have been for a couple of months. Yes. And nothing I've seen since then tells me I'm going to change my mind. St. George was a lovely, lovely Cup trial in the Cox Plate. So he's in the mix. And I'm very interested, obviously, in Point of Law, based on the fact he's been here and done it, and the others have not yet.
Speaker 2All right, then. So defiantly trust your instincts, St. George, and Point of Law. But as you tell us, before we go out to battle on Sunday and try and punt our hearts out, make sure you keep on trusting your instinct and you'll be right.
Speaker 15Yeah, it's a good place to start. Don't doubt yourself. Good on you, Gator.
Speaker 2Have a great day. Good luck. Eliminate Channel 9. There's Francesca Camarni, and then there's Gator. He's the star of the show. Ollie's telling me – oh, not Ollie. Louie's telling me to look at my phone. What have I missed? There we go. So we've got no Jack Turnbull, so he's unavailable. So we've got to push on anyway and continue on with the show. But it's always great to catch up with you, Gator. Good luck for the Channel 9 coverage, and we'll catch up with you on Monday.
Speaker 15Yeah, looking forward to Saturday in the week.
Speaker 2Punters go well. And speak Monday, mate. Thanks. There's David Gately for Gator's Game Plan. 34 minutes past 10, time for a break. We're going to come back with Jesse Gower next. Welcome back to Giddy Up, 0499 736 736. To join our conversation, Paulie Sebastiana, you've been watching closely. What has been the best push that you've got this weekend?
Speaker 10Oh, from Stable Mail. Very good question. Yeah. Very, very good question.
Speaker 2We might get Louie to come into the studio as well and get an early tip because Crofty keeps annoying me on the text message.
Speaker 10He said gallant son. Moody's push for gallant son. And Jackson with his horse in the Carbine Club. But they might go to the race on Cup Day. If they go to the race on Cup Day, as Gator quite rightly pointed out, he'll be very, very hard to beat in that event. Let's go with Aussie Curran unhinged.
Speaker 2Yeah, I reckon that's the best push. Because he loves Jimmy Star. I thought he would say Jimmy Star. Louie? Morning, Gareth. Sammy Walsh getting you tickets? Nah. Is he going to be captain of Carlton? I forgot to ask him that. You're probably better off asking Paulie. No, but you know, and you just won't tell us.
Speaker 16I don't think yet. Okay, so how many more years? I reckon he's one more and then I can see it happening. Okay, and then after that? I don't know. Is he captain material? Does he give you some speeches from time to time? I think he is. He's got a good head on his shoulders, Gareth. Okay. I just got to clear something up. Here we go.
Speaker 2So when I found out St. George was past the fitness test, I quote tweeted, Trent Mason, how did it be?
Speaker 16I've just seen this. Yeah. Well, past the test.
Speaker 2But it makes sense once you read it, doesn't it? It does. People text me in and say, that's sad about, that's. Gareth's tweeted saying St. George has passed. No, he definitely hasn't. He's passed the test.
Speaker 16Someone commented, rest in peace. You've written him off to heaven. No, no, no.
Speaker 2Unbelievable, yeah. I apologise there, but everyone knew what I meant, didn't they? Well, not everybody. Well, it did because I quote tweeted a quote tweet, which was explaining
Speaker 16why horses haven't passed the test yet. That comment saying rest in peace St. George is getting a few likes, which means that people do know, like, what you mean. And they're laughing at the joke. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Very funny. Very funny. Very funny. Yeah.
Speaker 2Who's your best push that you got this week?
Speaker 16Or today? I thought Moods was keen going. And there's just something about Nick Ryan when he comes on. Oh, he sucks you in all the time, Nicholas. Oh, I know. And he has with Anglais about eight times.
Speaker 2You're back at every start, Anglais.
Speaker 16You think it's the next Maccabi Diva. He's got this quiet confidence about downtime. So, yeah. Tight lipped. Yeah, I don't know. I don't know. But I like Cindy Alderson's horse this weekend, Gareth. I know you laughed at me this morning. No, I didn't. I didn't laugh. Hanky Alpha. Very good. Yeah, very good first up. Wetter the better. I don't know what rain we're going to get. We'll find out tomorrow morning. Josh Holt's going to-
Speaker 2Have you got his members tickets yet? Otherwise, he won't come on. It was your job, wasn't it?
Speaker 16Hey, don't look at me.
Speaker 2Yeah. So, who knows what the weather's doing? They say seven mils.
Speaker 16Yeah. I think late morning. Well, every time I check, it's late morning. Yeah, yeah. So, maybe by around the time the meeting starts. I don't know. But we'll find out tomorrow.
Speaker 2All right, then, mate. It's going to be exciting. I can't wait for Saturday. Saturday. What was your best push? My best push today, I like the way Gator's thinking with Regal Ambition, but we probably missed the price. When we set it, when the futures were out, it was about $3. Paulie's taking you on that race.
Speaker 16Yeah. Who's he with? The O'Shea Charlton horse.
Speaker 10Okay. Winker's first time. Map ahead of Regal Ambition. That's that pin-up Sheila, isn't it? Yep. J-Max on. Yeah. And Tommy Charlton gave
Speaker 2that a good push.
Speaker 10She's a nice horse, pin-up Sheila.
Speaker 2Very nice horse. Yeah. I don't know. There's a few horses I like. I reckon Hun Hinge is probably the best push I've got. Yeah. Because when you listen to Shane Jackson, he's got the second favorite, and he doesn't think he's even going to, or he's weighing up whether he runs on Saturday or Tuesday or not. Star of Masseton, you're going to have him. And I think McDonald's picked the best out of the Waller horses. So, yeah, I think Hun Hinge could be the play. Yep. Good on you, boys. Thank you. Who have we got next? Jesse Gower. Jesse Gower from NZB. Yep. All right, then. So, Jesse Gower to join me straight after this. This is Giddy Up All Things. Bet365. When it comes to Melbourne Cup time, you know the ready-to-run sales in New Zealand up far away at NZB. They're in the middle part of November. Jesse Gower will be watching the Cup. Usually, she rocks up. Not for Derby Day, and then she gets back home to Cambridge and gets ready for everyone rocking up to New Zealand for the ready-to-run sale. She joins us now. G'day, Jesse. Good
Speaker 17afternoon or morning over there, Gareth. This year, I am not heading over to Melbourne, disappointingly, so I'll be watching from home. Yes. But, yeah, it's just a shame. It's always a good fun over at the Carnival.
Speaker 2How's the build-up going towards your ready-to-run sales? Yeah, it's been really positive, Gareth. So, the breeze-ups have been online for about two weeks now, so there's been plenty of time to have a look at them. In all, before the sale, there will be about four weeks of viewing of the season. So, I'm looking forward to that. I think it's going to be great.
Speaker 17It's going to be great. uh gareth so it's the breeze ups have been online for about two weeks now so there's been plenty of time to have a look at them um in all uh before the sale there's there will be about four weeks of viewing of the horses and being able to see their gallops um before they actually go through the ring and uh the general vibe is really positive so um a great way to track this is looking at hotel bookings seeing how what the interest is like and who's actually going to be here for the sale and um i can say with confidence that we we're going to be seeing a lot of our great mates from australia um hong kong huge turnout from hong kong as always uh yeah it'll be a who's who um attending the sale and um and i think we can expect to see as as many if not more um this year trainers um you know agents and whatnot on the ground here at karaka i think
Speaker 2the best guide that you can get is that the people that rock up to these ready to run or this ready to run sale over the last say three or four years maybe five years now they just keep on coming back because they find nice horses and it's easy for them to get clients into those horses so um looks like the australians will be enforced because the last couple of years they have spent up big at this sale jess they have in
Speaker 17fact they there was a huge increase in australian spend with the 2025 ready to run sale um so historically this market's been dominated by hong kong um that it's such an easy formula uh for hong kong buyers um to utilize you know two-year-olds they're already broken in they're ready to go uh there's less time to wait before they can get them up there but our australian and domestic new zealand buyers as well have cottoned on to this formula as well and ultimately um this is not a patient game there are a lot of people who don't really want to wait to see their return on their investment and and this as a result this sale has carved out um just a huge reputation and and it fuels itself so the more demand we have for the top lots the more our vendors supply the high quality top lots those book one style pedigrees um and horses with you know very good confirmation and uh and as as a result where the turnover keeps increasing the um and the um the interest from australian buyers as well as you know the consistent hong kong spend as well as up there so as a result the records keep on being broken uh not only is the is it uh record-breaking on the track with our our results uh from graduates of the sale but also the the sales results are unsurpassed globally as well when you
Speaker 2have a look at the final 200s some of the superstars out of the sale um they completed their final furlong when they breezed up like mr brightside went 10.90 one and tino 1116 for h.a 1104 lucky swayness who was a superstar sprinter breezed up in 1114. char wolf broke 11 he went 10.77 golden 60 one of the all-time greats not of not just hong kong racing but world racing 10.48 um and war machine also went a similar time so there you go um yes
Speaker 17and if you look at the the average time from the breeze ups a couple of weeks ago it was a nine so many of our super graduates from the sale have gone slower than the average time so i think you know as much as people you hear people say oh it's not all about time there's some really cool facts and insights that the very best horses don't necessarily breeze up in the best time at all although of course you know you can never entirely apply a rule because war machine and golden 60 break that but uh uh you know these all of those top those group one winners we've had 33 sale in the last five seasons all of them have breezed up on that same 200 meter turf surface at tirapa and so you can really look at these times and look at these successful graduates that have come from the sale and seen what they've done and think crikey there's no reason why this next group of 400-ish uh two-year-olds wouldn't be able to achieve the same or better as they go on to their racetrack careers so how
Speaker 2do we get involved at the sales is there still accommodation available there jess so i've talked
Speaker 17to my people yeah and yes there is in fact there are a few rooms they're still at our gorgeous double tree uh by hilton karaka so and that's that's a that's a very cool place to be uh you don't have to leave the grounds um at all you can dine there you can you know get up in the morning have a yummy breakfast stroll across to the um to the complex only 200 meters away on the same grounds and and then head back for drinks the horseshoe bar dinner whatever afterwards it's super cool and very easy to do and i think it's going to be a great experience for easy but if you like a bit of nightlife and want to see central auckland then we can shuffle you into town as well so lots of cool ways to to see and do the realtor runs now
Speaker 2it's fascinating to work out who likes to stay at the complex and who likes to party um so there you go um i know guy moncastle likes to party that's why he's always a bit late when you need him to come and join you for breeding and bloodstock on giddy up on those mornings but it's always a lot of fun hopefully we can find our next golden 60-year-old char wolf and um because your new zealand dollar is kind to us aussies you get about a 20 discount already before you start to bid so away you go all
Speaker 17right it's sensational when you when you put your hand up and know that you can knock off 20 immediately i think it probably ups the confidence slightly i recall mick price saying oh i didn't mind looking at that aussie dollar rather than looking at the new zealand dollar when he was putting his hand up just this time last year so yeah it definitely makes a difference and and good on australian buyers who can um capitalize on that our poor old kiwi buyers can't so much so you might as well make
Speaker 2the most of it good on you jessie thanks for joining us as always
Speaker 17thanks gary there's

Speaker 2welcome back to giddy up we welcome our friends now joining us in western australia on se and turf Great to have your company. They join our audience on rsnsentrackracing.com. And if you're listening to us a little later on the podcast, a big hello to you. You can check out racingqueensland.com.au for where Queensland is racing today. Mitchie Abaya, our greyhound expert, joins us now. Hello to you, Mitch. Hello, G-Man. Great to be with you again. What do you like, brother?
Speaker 18There's a few I like tonight at the Q1 Lakeside, which will be a great night of racing. Hopefully the weather holds up because last week it was pretty grim and doesn't make for fast times. Now I want to start in the first race, one, number eight, Sargent. It's been well-backed. It's around $2.90. It's a young pup on the up, trained by Jetta Cutlack. I reckon this dog maps to absolute perfection. Mad Rail is inside in six and seven with a bit of speed as well. So this dog should get every opportunity. Just looked a bit uncomfortable off box one last time out. Didn't really handle the pressure and the start prior was brilliant. So that's race one. One, number eight, Sargent. Roll over to the next play. I've got a little, what do you call them? Terry two play, Toddy two play, whatever you want to call it. I want to go to race four, number four, She's All Fire. This dog's got brilliant early speed. Looks the likely leader on paper. There is a bit of speed coming across from the outside, which is my only concern. But around that $3.20 mark, I'm happy to have the play there. And then the saver is a huge, huge price. And it's the eighth Samson at about $80, I think, off box. Eight is one of the craziest $80 pops you'll ever find. This dog's form is not that bad. And it maps really nice. There is dogs in six and seven who want to cart for the fence. So I think at that price, it's worth a top three, top four play anyway, let alone the win play. Roll over to my next best. It's a bit of a price too. Race six, number one, Day C's Max, around $4.60. The dog's got brilliant early speed. The three wants to smash off the track. Should give us plenty of cover early. The two's got no speed. This looks one of the best plays. On the card, gee, I reckon win top two. I reckon they're going to be my main two plays for it. And then I've got one more, race eight, number seven, My Boy Bingo, $4.60 or thereabouts. Dog's drawn absolutely perfectly. Wide runner in eight. Mad railer's in four, five, six. I think this dog should get every opportunity to come out and win.
Speaker 2We have the Top Gun as well happening next week. But we get the field announced today. Do you think there'll be any surprises there, Mitch?
Speaker 18No, I think there are. I think they play pretty safe nowadays, don't they? They put the big guns in. And I think after a few people piped up a couple of years ago that dogs that they thought should have got in, I reckon they will play it quite safe and pick the big dogs. Would you put Without a Trace in? No, I wouldn't. No. But I think they will pick the dog based on the record throughout its career. Exactly right. And they will want Without a Trace running. Because if it comes out and wins, it'll be a nice old headline, I reckon.
Speaker 2I beat Miss Envy anyway. She could start now.
Speaker 18I don't know about that. Miss Envy's a very good animal. But if we say the best of Without a Trace, well, it could be raised on.
Speaker 2We haven't seen the best of first since Marnus Lavashay made runs for Australia. Which was a couple of weeks ago. No, he's been. When did he make runs for Australia?
Speaker 18I'm kidding. He made a blob line. He was the only man to score under 40, wasn't he? But look, I don't think that they will leave her out. But I think Beautiful Child's probably a dog to follow out of that. I reckon it can beat Miss Envy.
Speaker 2Yeah, the Queenslander. Hey, good on you, Mitchie. We appreciate your help as always.
Speaker 18Cheers, mate. We'll be on again tonight, 6 till 10pm. Myself and Big C Smith. So hopefully we can find a few winners for the punters.
Speaker 2You can dissect all of that. We appreciate you. That's Mitchie Abay. Listen to him on SCN Track tonight from 6pm. Talking all things greyhound racing and backing you plenty winners on a really good night of chasing action right across the country. Now time for the Thursday form lounge. Thanks to the Rising Sun Hotel, South Melbourne, backing winners with premium steaks, high quality service and the thrill of every race day. Pauli Sebastiani, Monday night, what are you doing? Are you doing anything on Monday night?
Speaker 10I'll be at the Rising Sun Hotel, Gareth. Yes, that's where we have our Melbourne Cup preview.
Speaker 2We'll have all the big names there. It's going to be a lot of fun.
Speaker 10Yes, shall be. I can't wait. Put on a nice spread, couple of drinks as well. A few steaks.
Speaker 2If you want to have some dinner there, it's the best pub to have dinner at. I'll be there. I don't know if you have to book it. You'll have to book your table. I'll get in pretty quickly. I think it might be sold out, but just try your luck. I'm sure they'll fit me. Ring them up and say, Pauli Sebastiani said that you've got a table for me. I'll fix them up. Yeah, don't mention my name. No, I won't.
Speaker 10No. They'll charge me triple.
Speaker 2Yeah. Chris Nelson joins us. Check out racingqueensland.com.au for where Queensland is racing today. Doombit on Saturday, Chris. Oh, it's a heavy 10, but it's a beautiful day in southeast Queensland, I've been told by Gerard and a few others this morning. Will we get a track upgrade?
Speaker 19Yeah, we will. And just on the rising sun there, I'll stop Pauli there. Just rock up at the door and say, do you know who I am? Just pull that old line. He'd be fine, wouldn't he?
Speaker 2Yeah, well, he does that a bit these days. He should be right.
Speaker 19Yeah. Yeah. Yes, the track has improved already this morning to a heavy nine. So that's a good thing. Yeah. Beautiful day. A bit of breeze around too, and no rain in the forecast right through to the weekend. So I would. I would say we'll be back on a soft surface come Saturday, which is good news, Gerard. Very good news. It is great news.
Speaker 2Tony Golan said Carter Nett is his best race for number 11, but he did say that he'll just have to wait and see what this track is like before he has a little bit more confidence in tipping us a horse there. And I thought that was disappointing. Tony, I see you can't really sit on the fence. We need winners now. Pembrey gave a wonderful chance to win the Coolmore. Whether she's good enough, time will tell. But she's ready to run at her best.
Speaker 19I thought she was sort of out for a while, and we might see her in the summer. But she's shown up there, which is interesting. But he wouldn't be sending her down there and making the trip if he didn't think she was up to it. And as for Carter Nett, well, I'll get to Carter Nett in a moment with the tips. But let's kick off in race two. Horse number two, Your Attitude. Now, this is a small field. Windstar and Your Attitude dominate. They are the two on form. Windstar was a winner at Doonburn last start. Yeah. Only beat a field of. Six, so five rivals. Went straight to the front. Did run them along and kept going well. That was over a mile. Your Attitude won at Hawkesbury over a mile. But I reckon Your Attitude from Chris Wallace Stable has got 2,000 metres written all over him. He's by the autumn sun. He really only surged late to win that mile race at Hawkesbury. I think he's the one here. I think the market's got it around the wrong way. They've got Windstar odds on, and Your Attitude's second favourite. But I think it'll tighten right up before we get to this race on Saturday. So race two, number two, Your Attitude kicks us off. Race four, horse number 11, Cardinette. The one you just mentioned looks very well placed. Probably would have made it three straight if not for running a little bit wide on the turn there at Doonburn last time out. She balanced that well. She hit the line strongly at the end of 11.10. She gets 1,200 metres this time. She's placed both runs on soft ground, so it shouldn't pose any issues. She does get back, but I think she'll be hard to hold out. And it doesn't look a strong field. There's not a lot of opposition there. Race four, number 11. Race seven, horse number four. Now, I want to back two here, but predominantly number five, she moves two. Who is also accepted in Sydney at Randwick. And as I checked a couple of minutes ago, still going at both venues. So no scratching anywhere as yet. She put the writing on the wall, 1,600 metres last start. That was her first run for almost three weeks. She was rising 250 metres, and she finished off really well in a race not run suit. So she looks ready wherever she goes. The other one there from the same stable is Tempranella. I pulled out a piece of paper. And I pulled out the wrong piece of paper. So I'll go back to that in a minute. Race seven, horse number Tempranella. Number 15, there it is. Tempranella, also trained by Chris Waller. Cracking run at Doonban last start. End of 13.50. She was really strong. So she's looking for the mile two, and she gets it. And she's double figure. So back both of those. Numbers five and 15 in race seven. And we'll finish off with one of Tony's in the last. I hope he gave it a bit of a wrap. Number seven, 10 deep. Who's got its foot right on the till, as they used to say, Gareth. Yes. Doonban behind Just Precious last time. I love the way she hit the line late. She's going to be third up. She's going to be fitter. She gets the claim for Bella. And she draws well. So race 10, number seven, 10 deep. Can send us home with a big smile on our face.
Speaker 2There'll be a few people 10 deep there by the end of Derby Day. Could be the only bit for everyone. Yes, yes, yes. So race two, number two. Race seven, number five. Race seven, number 15. And then you've got race 10, number seven.
Speaker 19Yeah, so five and 15 in that seventh race. Predominantly the five, but you've got to have something on the 15 as well.
Speaker 2Yeah. All right then, mate. We appreciate that. You've got a tip for us on any of the features there this weekend?
Speaker 19I'm going to go with Tharwa in the. Wakefield? In the third, in the Wakefield. Yeah. I don't like the barrier, I must admit, but I did like the run last start. So Tharwa for me. The Coolmore, the next episode, and St. Gothard are the two for me. I just worry about the track and the weather at this stage, but they are the two. And I'm going with Lady Shenandoah. The Derby. I found absolutely impossible. So I'll probably just have a couple of dollars on the one that I like from the Wallace Stable, which races the Derby. Which race is it?
Speaker 2Stormy Marker or Your Tone?
Speaker 19True Tone. True Tone, sorry, yeah. I followed this horse all the way through, even at Geelong, I thought the run was okay. By a done deal, he just wants ground. He's going to be ridden cold, you'd think, from that wide draw. He might be able to get home into a placing at least. So we'll have something each way at the price.
Speaker 2It's an interesting one because, as Paul Massara pointed out today, it is an afterthought for those Sydney horses that had a grand final. The week before, now they're going to travel to Melbourne and do it again over the 2,500 metres. But I guess time will tell.
Speaker 19There's no standout, is there? No. There's just no standout. And then the wide gates come into play as well. Yeah, I found it very, very difficult. I found most of the races very, very difficult at Flemington. So I wish you all the best of luck down there.
Speaker 2Okay. There you go. All right then, Chris. We appreciate that.
Speaker 19No problems at all. Have a good weekend, Gareth.
Speaker 2Cheers. There we go. There's Chris Nelson joining us. It's 10 minutes past 11. This is Giddy Up. We're going to take a break. We're going to continue on the Thursday Form Lounge next. Mickey Grantham isn't far away. It's 13 minutes past 11. This is the Thursday Form Lounge. And always great to catch up with our next guest. He's a superstar. He's a superstar, Mickey Grantham. And you can tune in to Racing WA TV on 7 Plus and Racing.com, your ultimate destination for everything racing in the West. Mickey Grantham, welcome back to Giddy Up. Good morning, Mr. Hall. Long time no speak. Yes, I know. You're always too busy for us these days. I know. I've dutted you a couple of times. Yeah, I know. I know. I've done you this morning. Too bloody good for us. Oh, please. Now, tell me this, mate. What were your emotions like after watching Cosmic Crusader win that WS? Cox Plate last Saturday? A horse who's very close to your heart?
Speaker 20Well, I was more disappointed in the fact that I didn't go over. I got the opportunity to, and I didn't want to put the mock on him, nor have I ever backed him in my life either. So my emotions were high for the whole operation and everything. And I got a lot of congratulations as well, but I couldn't really do anything. Andrea took him to that next level. And, you know, it was, yeah, I can't believe it, but it was still an unbelievable sort of a thing, isn't it? Did you think that he always had that in him? Hard to say, Gareth. What he was doing here was obviously probably the best source that I had at the time. And, yeah, you obviously watch, you grow up watching all that Melbourne racing, and you'd never probably think you'd have one come out of the stable and do what he did. But, you know, the belief is always there. But, no, probably not.
Speaker 2Did you think he had the constitution to have the campaign that he's had?
Speaker 20Yeah, he's an iron horse. His work, I spoke to him a fair few times when I was riding him. He's just one of those happy-go-horses. And, yeah, he has that will. He has that will. Nothing knocks him down, that's for sure.
Speaker 2Yeah, 100%. And I talked to Bob on Monday or Tuesday, Monday, and he said that there's a strong chance that you'll get him back for the Northerly. How exciting is that?
Speaker 20Oh, that'll be good. I haven't, obviously, you know, that was, our discussion that he'd always come home, whether he races or not will be a time to tell. But, you know, if it was my horse, I'd be doing exactly what the boss man is doing and putting him in the championships. You're over there. It was like us last year after the Northerly when we put him in the gold rush. He only had to wait. He's already up and going. So what's the point of bringing him back? And anything could happen to him. He can get travel sickness on the way home, not to mock him, but you might lose him. So he's over there. So go for it, I reckon.
Speaker 2So he goes to the Champions State. And then he'll take that charter flight back to WA where he goes back into your name and you'll prepare him for a Northerly. And he's going to be hard to beat in the Northerly, you would imagine. Might be a great race with Pride of Jenny and Buckaroo engaged as well. So we always usually get a three-year-old that adds a little bit of X factor. So I can't wait for that Northerly. If it, like, there's a long way to go, as they say, Mickey G, but at the moment it promises to be one of the great Northerlies. It'll be a great race.
Speaker 20Obviously, Dad does the airports for those charter flights. And that weekend, on the Monday, I think, obviously, Mr. Calthorpe's got a plane booked and that could be the plane Cosmic's on. So they've already asked me to help. A lot of his workers have gone away. So I'm going to have to tell the boss man I have to pick him up.
Speaker 2Yeah, well, you'll be picking him up. No one else will be, I would imagine. You'll be straight back home.
Speaker 20There'll be a diversion back to the farm, I think. I think the boss man would love to give him a pat.
Speaker 2Okay. And so. The platform that he had before he headed over to Andrea League. So he had a bit of a pre-season, didn't he? In the heavy sand, the way that Bob likes to prepare him.
Speaker 20No, he wasn't here. He was. Hannah and Liam done a lot of arena work. He had, I think, a few minor, you know, shelf problems with a few rashes that he gets. And, you know, for a moment there, it probably wasn't looking like he was going over. And Hannah and Liam done a lot of arena work. But before he left to probably condition him for that truck ride over. So, yeah, like I say, everyone's played a big role in it. So, yeah, it's.
Speaker 2So he didn't fly over, he trucked.
Speaker 20Yeah, you know what the boss man's like? He's a hard man. He is a hard man. He's on the truck.
Speaker 2He won't be coming home on the truck anyway.
Speaker 20Actually, you know what? I don't know if he trucked the flow now. I can't remember. I reckon he actually flew.
Speaker 2Yeah, he would have. I don't know. There's a couple. I remember the greatest ever. training performance that I've ever come across in any code. And you would know this man quite well, Tony Silevich. So Mr. Magical Mac. In the trotting days. Yeah, in the trotting days. Mr. Magical Mac, he competed in the Inter-Dominion. He galloped at the start and he was okay still. And he finished midfield. I think it was the Inter-Dominion that Quinnie won. I'm pretty sure it was. Yeah. And then he left on the Monday. He drove from Sydney across the Nullarbor all the way home. So. Nose out. That's like three days of travelling. Yeah. And then he turned up on Friday night to lead all of the way in a free-for-all at Gloucester Park. Smashed him. And smashed him. Yeah. The greatest performance. And then just came out and doing it. Yeah, the greatest performance I've ever seen, really. He was a miracle man, Tony Silevich.
Speaker 20Anyway. Sure was.
Speaker 2He sure was. Back on track, streamlined, the first race over the 2,200 metres. Your thoughts there?
Speaker 20He acted like a bit of a dummy last start when he got outside the leader. Obviously, he had a few issues with him pulling. And that's how he works at home, sitting outside. And then that probably went a little bit slow. And I would have probably, like Krista, had put a fair bit of pressure on at 1,000 in that last start to the lead. Obviously, he just kicked away. And our bloke being a bit of a dummy that he is, sort of got a bit lost. So, unfortunately, being sort of half a small field on a Saturday, he's going to have to try and find a bum and either be put into it or he just jumps too well, unfortunately. So, he's going good. He gets the trip. He'll get there. He gets the trip. That's no doubt about that. So, you know, it's just another good race for him.
Speaker 2Like clockwork, Chris Partham, 1,200 metres.
Speaker 20Oh, we're going up against another one of the boss men. Yes. So, I don't know which tail I'll be hanging on to.
Speaker 2Yeah, yeah. You've got the yellow cap. Does that mean anything?
Speaker 20No, we'll have the other cap. We'll have the other cap. We'll have the olden day hat. All right. The quartered cap. Yeah. But, no, she's gone really well. Yeah. Obviously, got beaten by a very good race. A very good horse the other day. But our best thing the other day when she raced over that short trip was that she actually jumped and travelled and put herself into a spot. And, you know, if she can do that in this sort of field on Saturday and take that bit of luck out of the equation and sort of get rid of it in the manner that she does, I think she'll be hard to beat.
Speaker 2What race have you got in mind for her as the big grand final as you head towards the
Speaker 20carnival? At the moment, it's just race by race. You know, if she does something, she's going to win. If she does something special again, I just think she'll end up in the mayor's races. I don't think she's going to be a winter bottom horse. I don't think she has that real good tactical speed. But she'll just probably end up in the mayor's races. And, yeah, you just never know. I'm like, you know, after Saturday, the boss might say put her in the R.J. Peters. I don't know. It's just whatever sort of comes and however she goes, really.
Speaker 2Is she a sprint or a middle distance horse? I don't know.
Speaker 20You know, we obviously got over 2,000. She was at the end of her campaign. Yeah. Lying over a mile. I don't know. I can't answer that.
Speaker 2Yeah. Western Miss and Hollow Knuff go around in race number seven.
Speaker 20Yeah. No, Western Miss is probably the most exciting horse from our neck of the woods for us. Obviously, a fair few tactical problems. Sorting it out race by race. Obviously, the adrenaline gets her race day. She's beautiful at home like most horses. So, yeah, it's just another race where Christopher's going to have to try to find a bum early and you know, and use her speed late. So, she's going along really well and I was very disappointed with Hollow Knuff's last start. Didn't really find too many niggling problems when I got home. So, hopefully, just put it down as a trial run, which was a bad trial, but I think he'll improve off his work that he's done.
Speaker 2Everyone can't wait to see Western Lady back at the races and Nicky Arna also goes around that last race. Your thoughts there, Mickey G?
Speaker 20Yeah, I think we just leave up to loose as Western Lady. Obviously, a 1,400 is going to be a mile too short for her. She's got a big prep coming up. She's actually in fold to Machino as we speak. So, I think she gets three days after the Perth Cup and that's her deadline to be racing. So, she'll be racing with two heartbeats anyway. But she's going really well at home. So, just for one, for us to make sure that she's hitting the line and she can get through to those bigger races, hopefully. And Nicky Arna was. good yellow diag. got caught three and four wide and sort of made a bit of a run and ran out of steam. So obviously a pretty good horse in the race Rockfest as well. So it's probably going to be a hard race to probably even capture him, to be honest.
Speaker 2Good luck with it all, Mickey G. We appreciate your time. Can't wait to see Light Clockwork. She's one of my favourites. And Western Mist go around on Saturday. Just go Light Clockwork into Western Mist. So race four, number nine, into race seven, number nine. And, yep, good luck with Cosmic Crusader when he gets back home, the Cox Plate champion in Northerly. I'll be giving him a pat regardless. Yes, good on you, brother. Well done, mate. Thanks for that. See you, bud. Bye. There's Mickey Grantham there. 23 minutes past 11, we'll take a break. Big news coming out of the Melbourne Greyhound Racing Club at the Meadows. Corey Smith will join me to announce the Top Gun Fields.
Speaker 1Gareth Hall with you.
Speaker 225 minutes past 11. I need to pass this information on. I've just been having a chat to Aussie Care. St. George, like they thought he passed and then he might not have passed. So there's confusion everywhere. So wait. Until he hears some more. Yeah, I think it's a question mark there now with St. George. So who knows these days what's happening with these scans. But that's the information. I'm providing you with the information that I get. I think everyone's a little confused at the moment. So we'll just wait and see what Racing Victoria has to say about all these CT scans. But at the moment now it was Stinger Glass and we thought St. George was okay. But obviously he's back with the question mark alongside Stinger Glass's name. question mark alongside stinger glass's name um corey smith joins us from the melbourne greyhound racing club g'day smithy
Speaker 21g'day g pleasure to be
Speaker 2here top gun announcements yes everyone's eagerly awaiting in the greyhound industry no
Speaker 21it's it's always interesting everyone has their own opinions but we we enlist a panel from all around australia to to come up with these fields and we're we're pretty comfortable and confident that uh this is the best possible all right the big question
Speaker 2everybody wants to know, did Without a Trace make it or not?
Speaker 21Without a Trace did make it. Did? Okay.
Speaker 2So all of my experts say she didn't deserve to be there.
Speaker 21She has lost seven in a row. So there's probably a fair. When was the last time she won? May. Nah, it's been since then I reckon. Has it? Yeah, I think June she broke a track record at Bendigo. I'm not sure if she's won since then or not, but yeah, look, the bulk of her resume got her in. She's obviously a very exciting greyhound. She hasn't been at her best, but when you pull it apart and you see the races that she's been contesting and still running meritable runs, but probably not up to her standards. But the panel decided it was worth giving her a crack.
Speaker 2Okay. Who else is in the top gun there for the stays?
Speaker 21So in the stays, and this is just in alphabetical order, we've got Aiden's Warrior, the old marvel there for Jason Thompson and Team Lord. Beautiful Child from Queensland, who trialled at the Meadows last night and went pretty well for a first look. Electrify, who is one of the more exciting dogs in the country magpie hector who i probably consider the best dog in the country he's going around mapunga lara who's made nine group one finals miss envy who is an absolute superstar in her own right any distance anywhere she just gets the job done and sin city bandit new south wales dog who's come down into the care of jason thompson as well and then without a trace and the two reserves are amron toy and charmer who is over from wa as well so jam-packed normally the stay almost picks itself year in, year out. But I think this was one of the hardest ones on record. Plenty of depth.
Speaker 2Who starts favourite, Miss Envy?
Speaker 21Miss Envy or Magpie Hector, I reckon. Box draw dependent. Miss Envy obviously has the early speed. Magpie Hector's the stronger type and he was unbelievable in a Sydney Cup recently. So cracking field and I'm sure the bookies will have it very, very interesting after the box draws on Monday night.
Speaker 2Yeah. All right. Then what about the sprinters?
Speaker 21Another one that was full of conjecture And you've got a lot of dogs that have done some really good things, but probably a little bit further back, whether they're in good enough form or not for this, that was always going to be the hot talking points. But again, in alphabetical order, we've got Canyon Mayhem, the Melbourne Cup champ. Then we've got Canyon Talk Now, a dog that is an absolute rocket ship. He's a Group 3 winner, and he's won, I think it's 15 from 19. Wow, X Factor. Yeah, X Factor, X Factor. Jungle Johnny, who, one of the fastest dogs in the country, multiple track record breaker. uh mapunga reward the old superstar he's uh he won
Speaker 2the claimer basically on yeah i mean million dollar chase yeah the masters
Speaker 21race he was he was incredible winning that he's got an unbelievable resume and it's a superstar in his own right speaking of superstars off the chart the golden easter egg winner um we haven't seen the best of him in recent times either but he is on the way back pound keeping up from new south wales around second in the million dollar chase and has won a a group two and a group three as well uh storm hustler who's one of the most informed dogs in the country we saw him through that national series was the victorian state champ and then wrongly accused one of the fastest dogs we have ever seen goes in as well and the two reserves he's a pearl uh who's a multiple group one finalist in indy melman who's a group one winner track and trip and you could have made a case for probably another five or six of them jay there's there's plenty of good dogs that miss out each and every year in the top gun and this year is
Speaker 2no exception can you mayhem can you talk now the x-factor jungle johnny mapunga reward off the chart pound keeping storm hustler jason amos will be happy there and wrongly accused yeah ripping field only one slot pick for the phoenix at the moment and that's
Speaker 21wrongly accused yeah they
Speaker 2could have got that wrong after watching him last
Speaker 21start well if he comes out and wins a top gun yeah yeah yeah
Speaker 2well i've got to talk it down don't i because we missed out um all right beautiful mate a little bit of controversy there who are the first reserves
Speaker 21uh so he's a pearl is the the first reserve in in the sprint and in the uh stay as it's amaran toy so both dogs that probably toy stiff yeah i think every dog that's in that reserve pool and there's probably a few that missed out as well a genuine winning chances there's so much depth uh we got people from all around who are they well we got uh we got wayne seekman up in queensland wayne billet in new south wales who will be going to queensland of course got the big job up there shaw matheson over in SA and then James Vandermart and Jason Adams.
Speaker 2James Vandermart and Jason Adams. We might have to put them in a hot seat next week.
Speaker 21That's it. And chaired by the CEO at the Meadows, which is Scott Wachach. It's a good panel and there was plenty of discussion, went round in circles a little bit, but came to some decisions in the end that we're really comfortable with, we're really happy with, and I'm sure there'll be plenty of people that have differing opinions. That's part of the fun of the Top Gun.
Speaker 2Love your work. Thanks for that, Smithy. Thanks, Jay. There's Corey Smith there. So there you go. There's the fields for the Top Gun. That's Saturday week. Saturday week. Yep, yep. And you can, the markets will be out pretty shortly with Bet365. I'd be backing Miss Envy. It's tough in the sprinters. Off the chart, there's a few dogs that need to find their best form, really. So, yeah, that's a draw dependent, I reckon, for the sprinters. But it's always a great race. 31 minutes past 11, time for a break. And we're going to catch up with Lincoln Moore. It's SA time and Tassie time. That's not far away. 34 minutes past 11. You can check out daretodream.com.au where the next champion racehorse could be yours. So Lincoln Moore is going to join me with some racing news from South Australia. And then Travis Dowder will join us straight after that. He's Cosmic One at Flemington in Saturday's Rising Fast Stakes. Obviously been in red hot form, the Cosmic One in Adelaide. Toughest test to date, but looking forward to catching up with Travis. He'll play a major part this weekend as well in Adelaide. So Lincoln Moore's not far away. John Kelton at Morpheville on Saturday likes race five, number three, extra fling and race one, number four, it's another battle. So five, three, one, four. And he likes a couple that are longer price as well. Race six, number nine, race eight, number 10 and race four, number five. But he's best is race five, number three, extra fling and race one, number four, it's another battle. Lincoln Moore joins us now. He's ready to go. G'day, Lincoln. Gareth, how are you, mate? Good. Thank you, mate. Smooch, you know, everyone's trying to claim him these days, Western Australia and also South Australia, but his home is Gawler. And that was a big effort to win the McEwen Stakes down the straight there on last Saturday afternoon.
Speaker 22Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, we're certainly claiming him now. He resides here in South Australia. And what a result for Indiana Winer and Austin Gulati. Obviously, he's the reason largely that she made the move to South Australia, a horse that's, you know, future's, you know, His destiny is on the East Coast now in all these good sprint races. So it was a terrific result, not only for Indiana, but I thought Austin to, you know, get that Flemington result. And it was just such a good ride. Just stalked the, you know, the informed jigsaw the whole way. But I thought the way that that horse was able to level out and, you know, hold off horses like Extra Galactic, who arguably should have won out good, just shows you what level, you know, he's capable of competing at while he's up and about.
Speaker 2She goes to Indy Wynette, Smoot Channel. They go to Meteorite now. It looks like they're going to be having the Moonee Valley slot because by winning that race, you get first choice and first Kraken. representing Moonee Valley in the media, right? And they get a pretty good deal. So it's going to be difficult for someone to come over the top and beat that deal from the Valley. So expect that announcement shortly. What did you make of the Gawler Cup there on the Friday, last Friday?
Speaker 22Yeah, it was a, look, the Gawler Cup is always a great race. It was a big field this year with a lot of good country cup form here from South Australia. It was a great result for Grant Young and Brook King with Bamian Buddha. He's a horse that, he just loves Gawler. It's his second Gawler Cup now. And he really deserved that feature. He'd been placed in two of them lead-ups, both the Balaclava and Murray Bridge Cups. And, yeah, he's a horse that just thrives when he gets to Gawler. And I feel like it might be the start of a good couple of months for the stable. I reckon Grant's horses are ticking along quite nicely there at Murray Bridge. And Bamian Buddha, yeah, he's just a good, honest horse. He'd love to own him. And, yeah, it was another feature for Brook King, who's really kicking some goals. She's a very talented young apprentice, Brook, and she's going to get a lot of good opportunities over the next few months going forward. And be a real major player when it comes to the premierships here in South Australia.
Speaker 2There's not a cup carnival that you don't see a few South Australian winners. You start off on Saturday. Churchill Rose represents Andrew Gluis in the black and white in the Wakefield. How good is this three-year-old filly?
Speaker 22Yeah, I think she's certainly one that probably goes over a little bit underestimated just given, look, she was beaten in that Hillsmith Stakes last start by Kasaji. But at the same time, I thought her run was superb because they put a bit of a space on the third horse. And when Kasaji loomed up, he probably expected him to race past and sort of put a bit of a margin on her, but she didn't shirk the task. So I think she goes over there. Look, she draws a good gate with Craig Williams riding. We had Joe Gluis just on the Frontrunner podcast. I'm coming back from recording that now. And he's quite bullish about her chances, just knowing that, look, they've taken a horse to this day over the last five years, and they've had a tremendous record. Obviously, Gold Rush Guru is the one that jumps to mind winning a derby. But at the same time, Freedom Flame went through this same setup last year to run really well in a wakeful. And, you know, I just think she's a real honest horse and is probably a little bit disrespected as far as the market goes. So she's a horse that can put herself in a spot. And it wouldn't surprise me if she ran a bit of a race.
Speaker 2Who's a better chance than the Rising Fast? You've got Watch Me Win and also this Rising Star, the Cosmic One, who just keeps on winning.
Speaker 22Yeah, the Cosmic Ones are really exciting horses. I think there's both crazy prices. The Cosmic One, is a horse that's just taken all before him this preparation. Look, he was, well, I can't wait to hear you chat with Trav about this horse after me, because I believe this horse was virtually retired at one point. He just kept going sore. They just couldn't keep him up, keep him sound. And I think it was the one of the, he was going to the paddock for what could have been his forever home there. And he just took off, you know, and looked a million bucks, Trav said. And he was like, I've got to give this horse one more chance. Well, they have. And he's just been a real, I guess, flagship, horse for his new stable here in South Australia. He was based at Morphaville, you know, until what, three or four months ago now. And he set up a new property South of Adelaide. It's just near Mount, that's escaping me off the top of my head. The town I'm thinking of, it's got a really good golf course there. That's what I can tell you. But beautiful property they've purchased. There was a winery, he's put in sand tracks, sitting there training all the horses out of big paddocks. And this horse is just thriving, but he's a genuine horse. I think, and I just love him. I'd look, I jumped off him two starts ago and copped a cop, the fair bit of flack for doing it because he was very, very impressive on that occasion. But he there's so much to like about his pattern. And you just love horses that like winning and he's, he's one of them and watch me win. I guess he's in the, an interesting situation. He's got the runs on the board. We know he's been racing at a great, you know, a top level for a long period of time. Now it's just whether he's racing just a shade below his best, but Joe Lewis did indicate that he thinks he's going to run a bit of a race. Now, cause he, he carried a bit of a two kilo penalty for, um, some of his earlier wins through some harder races, uh, over the last sort of 12 months. And that's no longer there. So it wouldn't surprise me if he run well, but they're both very big odds for horses that, uh, I think are both well and truly up to a race like that.
Speaker 2Who do you think the best chance for South Australia is during cut week? Obviously you've got some runners in the Johnny let's cup on cup day. And then throughout the rest of the week, um, who would you put your money on?
Speaker 22John let's cup. It's going to be a really interesting race here in Adelaide. Uh, you know, a lot of them horses come out of the goal. Look up aerosol comes back from a, a disappointing run last start in Melbourne, not freedom flames. The interesting one, I reckon the stable mate, she's obviously a well-performed man. She went up to 2000 over in Melbourne there a couple of weeks ago, ran really well, but Craig Williams got off and just said, go back to the 1800. So she, she'll do that on the, uh, on John let's cup day, uh, here in Walfordville and dropping back to 1800 meters with aerosol, I guess, given, his record, he's chasing a third straight win in the race, compressing the weights might mean that, uh, freedom flame will get her a chance to win a good race. I really like her. I always have. She's certainly a, a quality horse. So maybe she's the horse to beat because, uh, there's a few other norms in that, that are likely to go elsewhere. I know teardrop rotation who ran well running second in the goal cup. I don't think goes that way. I believe, uh, Luke O'Connor's looking at potentially taking, um, Placo over to Victoria for a country cup in preference to that race. So maybe it all lands, uh, for freedom flame to win that race. Although aerosol does get stubby back on this week, but, um, it's going to be a really good addition to the John Letts cup. We've only had fields of eight and 10 the last few years, but then I think there was about 17 norms earlier or last time I looked. So it's going to be a really good addition to the race, but, um, yeah, I think there's a few South Australian horses that will, uh, to follow over in Melbourne. I thought the Richard and Chantelle Jolly stable, um, they, they took bread them all there last weekend. It ran really well in that opening race in Melbourne last weekend. That horse is really lightly raced. It's got a lot of upside. And I reckon it'll, uh, it'll pinch a race during the carnival where they go to next. I'm not quite sure, but we know their horses race so well over there with that satellite stable. So keep an eye on bread them all. It's a horse with a lot of upside.
Speaker 2Yeah. So that John Letts cup Tuesday, the feature raise $120,000 there at Morphanville. Um, not color is dominating at the moment. He's a man that you just need to keep on following. It's he's made another comeback, the King, and, he's doing a wonderful job in essay at the moment. So yeah, bring it on. There's plenty happening, mate, um, at home and across.
Speaker 22Yeah. Yeah. Noel's doing a great job. Look, he's got obviously really good associations with the Stokes stable, but getting some really good opportunities for Victorian stables. We seen him win the Murray bridge cup for veggie a couple of weeks ago. And look, you don't lose it. Um, as a jockey, he's got, he's just got class about him. We seen him in a really competitive ride there on the weekend. Jake Taro was on the favorite. He put him in a pocket and was able to win a race. One of the Hawks double over here in South Australia. And he's certainly going to, uh, go a long way to winning a premiership. No, he's certainly a classy rider. He has been for a long time and, um, you can always back him with confidence.
Speaker 2Thanks, mate. We appreciate you coming on.
Speaker 22Giddy up. No worries.
Speaker 2Travis Dowdle now joins us. He's got the cosmic one going around at Flemington, the group three rising fast stakes. He's the star trainer from South Australia. And geez, he's done a great job with this Galloper. Travis, thanks for your time. No, thanks for having me. What's the story behind the cosmic one. Lincoln was just pointing out that he was nearly retired.
Speaker 23Yeah, he was retired for probably 20 minutes or so, I put him on the float and when I said I had enough, I just sort of thought, you know, it might've been his third or fourth prep and he'd gone sore again. Uh, after doing very little, I took him out to the paddock and thought that's probably, you know, he's not going to make it. So I did that. I told the girl where I was taking him that he's probably going to be retired and we need to find him a home. And then I got him out there, let him go in the paddock and he took off running around. He's just such a beautiful horse. So I said, just hold onto that for a little bit. We'll give him one day. One more try. So he's had horses go out for six, eight weeks spells where this guy's had six, eight month spells in between preps when he was younger. And I guess that patience is starting to pay off for the owners now.
Speaker 2Yeah. And he just keeps on winning now, doesn't he? Like he's just got that confidence. He's feeling good and he comes to Flemington at a big price. But look out, I reckon come Saturday, what are your confident levels?
Speaker 23Well, look, we're confident. We, we wouldn't be sending him across there if we didn't think he was up up to it. Interesting thing with this horse is we don't really know how good he is. Um, because he does sort of get the wonders a little bit when he hits the front. Um, he's often sort of been left in front a long way from home. Um, so yeah, look, we, and he's pulled up really well from all of his runs is prep. So he's done it quite easy. Um, most of his starts, um, even if something's been taken ground off him late, he sort of hasn't been fully stretched out. And Ben Price, he's got a good association with the horse. He's, um, sort of said the same thing. He's only ever felt him at about 80% in his races. So if we can get him getting to really stretch out, maybe a good quality field, um, give him, give him a few more horses to sort of run along with. We might be a bit more out of him.
Speaker 2You've got some nice horses going around in Adelaide on Saturdays. Are any standouts there? Like Viant Lovebug is a progressive type and, uh, Ramesses as well.
Speaker 23Yeah, look, Lovebug, obviously, uh, both, both horses very lightly race, but she sort of comes from, uh, you know, a higher benchmark race last start. She drops back, um, drops back in, in a, in a sort of the quality of, of race. She goes up in weight a little bit, but we're going to clean him off her. She's got a really good draw. So yeah, she's probably our best for, for the weekend in Adelaide. Um, she's a nice, nice mare and she's going to go on and win a fair share of races. That's for sure. So it looks, it looks a winnable race on Saturday. -
Speaker 2Yeah. $100, what would you do with it this weekend?
Speaker 23I'd probably have it on her, but I might even have maybe we have $100 to place on the Cosmic one. Real good value going for you.
Speaker 2I love it, Trav.
Speaker 23He's big odds and that's when you have a go at him.
Speaker 2Yep, so that's race four, number 17, the place the Cosmic won at Flemington into race nine, number 13, Violet Lovebug in that ninth race at Morphinville. And Lincoln Moore was just pointing out, Nangita, that's where your new farm is. Boy, you've had some great results since you made that move
Speaker 23there. Yeah, it's been really good. And even this horse, you know, he was one of the first horses to come into work up here. We got it going and, you know, we're trotting him and getting him around in the sand tracks here. And yeah, it seems to be working really well. It's got a long way to come still, but you know, it's got really good bones and the it's got good natural tracks, great water. It ticks a lot of boxes and the horses have really changed and are thriving here. So a few horses that we had in the city were sort of struggling a little bit, especially mentally, and they've come up here and they've really turned the corner. So it's been a really good move. We've got everything out of the city now. We've got everything here. So it's been great.
Speaker 2Well done with all the success that you're having and good luck, especially with the Cosmic one on Saturday. Thanks a lot. There's Travis Dowdle. 47 minutes past 11. That was South Australian time, SA time. Tassie time is coming up next. Back to Giddy Up, Gareth Hall with you. Now I need to apologise. Well, it's just the information that I gathered today with St. George. Just had a chat to Aussie Kerr and there's been a little bit of a mix up with the communication, but he passed the trot up, St. George. So he passed the trot up, but subsequently they've got the PET scans back and he hasn't passed. So he's out of the Melbourne Cup, St. George. And he won't race again this spring. That's coming from Aussie Kerr, the managing part owner of St. George. So there you go. And we're just a mate now. We'll wait on Stinger Glass. So that's the information that I have got. Now, so there you go. We just, when I thought he passed, he passed the trot up, but as I just said, subsequently they've got the PET scan back and he hasn't been able to pass that. So St. George won't be going around in the Melbourne Cup. It's nine minutes to twelve. It's time for Tassie time. The connections run deeper. Tassie, the perfect place to race. Matty Reid joins us. Matty, hello to you. Morning, Gareth. Plenty happening, mate. Friday night racing back at Launceston on Derby Eve. Can't wait for that. Have you got a winner for us?
Speaker 24Yeah, it's been a nice stretch of night racing to open the season, G. Six in a row. We've had Fridays in Launceston and then the next Friday will be Newmarket night. So ten races there. Plenty of opportunity to find a winner. Hopefully we can get a couple for you. I'll go race four, number four, Keon's Kingdom. A horse we're getting an each-way price about. Second up, they went pretty hard on speed first up in what is a hot form racer like the set-up tomorrow night. I think it's a good each-way bet. In the next race, which is the fifth, number three, Nova Largo, should get every possible from a nice draw. But yeah, good depth across the ten-race program tomorrow night.
Speaker 2And then Melbourne Cup days. Are you a bigger state,
Speaker 24Hobart? Well, outside Cup Day and probably some of the big feature race days, it is, G. Certainly attendance-wise, it'll be a sell-out upstairs and probably the downstairs bars packed as well. So we haven't raced in Hobart since the middle of August. Trax had a Renault. It looks a million dollars. There are a few Goodwood horses galloping here first thing this morning. And that Goodwood program is a beauty as well. The last lead-up before the new market. We'll see Durazo go around there. Of course, one of our best wait-for-age horses and won the new market last year. And I guess a host of challenges looking to maybe pick up a Goodwood on the way to having a throw up the stumps at the new market. So yeah, really pumped for Melbourne Cup Day. And of course, the big crowd here will be cheering the local Tassie lad, James Johnston, with his first ride on Mr. Monaco on the big one.
Speaker 2What about Saturday at the Trots? Good program there at Hobart.
Speaker 24Yeah, it's a beauty. The Saturday night programs, we sort of run our big feature nights in this slot. Good for wagering, good for eyeballs on. And we've got a really good program there with the two-year-olds, of course, the Avicus and the Dandy Patch. We've got the three-year-old Phillies Championship. on that program as well. And yeah, a heap of feature races and some good horses. I mean, probably the thoroughbreds getting the headlines, but across chasing and pacing we're really coming into some of our biggest and best races. Of course, the two group ones are in December, being the Hobart 1000 and the Tassie Cup too. So pretty to look forward to on Saturday night. And Adrian Collins will be hosting the coverage for us on the Tass Racing live stream. So good opportunity to tune in.
Speaker 2Sensational, mate. Thanks for that, Matty. Any winners for us or we'll wait until tomorrow?
Speaker 24No, I just, there's a couple there I just gave you, G. Race 4 for Keon's Kingdom and Race 5 for Nova Lago. And if I can find a couple more, I'll flick them through to you too.
Speaker 2Race 4, number 4. Race 5, number 3. Good on you, Matty boy. Thanks for that. Thanks, G. Yeah, Matty Reid there. Braden Howlett's about to join us. Now, the Howletts are a wonderful family there in Tasmania. They dominate the Avicus, which is the featured two-year-old Phillies race coming up on Saturday night. They're they won both heats with Danger Beware and Kooky. And looking forward to seeing what they have to say, or Braden has to say about their chances come Saturday night. Braden, hello to you, mate. Welcome to Giddy Up. Hello to you, Braden.
Speaker 25Yep, got you there, Gareth.
Speaker 2Yeah, got you loud and clear, brother. Who's your best chance out of those
Speaker 25two-year-old Phillies? There's not much between them. Kooky's probably got the front row draw and might find the front eventually, but the other Philly off the back row probably has a bit more unknown and has more ability. But yeah, I honestly couldn't split him at the moment, but yeah, the market says
Speaker 2the same. So Danger Beware could be the best value, but Kooky's got the draw and looks hard to beat if he can find the front.
Speaker 25Pretty much. Yeah, the Danger Beware was pretty good in the heat, and yeah, Kooky, you kind of know what you're going to get with her beyond speed and try hard at, so yeah, we won't complain if either of them get up.
Speaker 2How's Tried to Tell Ya, the superstar pace that went to the Inter-Dominion. How's he come back after a bit of a break?
Speaker 25Yeah, he had six weeks up in Queensland in the sun and come back looking like he was in foal, so I think Rowan said he's trialling next week with the Hobart and the Tassie Cup early in mid-December at the Targets, but yeah, he's really happy with him, and yeah, hopefully that AAA does his wonders and switches him on and, you know, just toughens up that a little bit more.
Speaker 2That is exciting. And they tell me you're the managing part owner of GG's Mistruth.
Speaker 25Probably not in the book, but yeah, I have a bit to do with behind the scenes, so yeah, we've had the ups and downs of racing the last 12 months, Gareth, as you know, so hopefully we jump the gate on Saturday. I won't be there Saturday. I've got six in Saturday night, but I'm sure she'll be there about if she comes out of the gate clean.
Speaker 2And then what about the team of the hell? It's like, have you ever been in better form? You're flying at the moment. 31 wins from your last 99 starts.
Speaker 25Yeah, probably can't say. The stats say that we're going alright, but yeah, we're just getting some, you know, quality horses. We've invested the past couple of years in some younger stock, and all our four two-year-olds have won, and all these other going horses we're getting, you know, they're doing a good job, and I'm pretty particular on what we're buying down here when trying to place them, so that seems to be working, and yeah, we've got some really good owners involved, including Elliot Booth, been a long-time client. Your man Ryan Spice, he's in about six now, I think. He can't say no every time I buy a new one.
Speaker 2He's got too much money, Braden. Hey, I've got about. He does, yeah. Yeah, I've got 35 seconds less than any winners, mate. What are we backing if I gave
Speaker 25you $100? I think our other horse in the two-year-old race, in the race eight, Van Penny, if you have any winnings from Saturday Metro, go and double your money on her, race eight number one, Saturday night.
Speaker 2Race eight number one. We'll try and get it on early, but you keep on stealing those tab prices when the markets go out, so leave it to some of us battlers, if that's all right. Ah, every
Speaker 25man for himself, Garrett.
Speaker 2Yeah, 100%. Don't stop being so selfish, Braden.
Speaker 25Good man, thank you.
Speaker 2And that was Tassie Time, and thanks to the Little Dale Instant Lawn, it's time to wrap it up now. Australian family-owned quality turf delivered on time, every time. Our roots run deep. That was a busy show. Time for a sleep. 11.58, thanks for your company. I'll be back tomorrow morning, kicking off with our Derby preview with Mark Hunter with the Hunter's Edge.
