Ethan Brown will join me. He's just a top class jockey. He's come back from Hong Kong and he has been in some really good form. But he had a big day there on Sunday. Jimmy Starr, of course, was the highlight. And he's got a decision to make. Now, I just had a chat to Aussie Kerr. He won't make that decision regarding Jimmy Starr until around Thursday if they go ahead and try and work out a slot there for the Everest. But at the moment, Ethan's got the right of Saran, who was the favorite for the Caulfield Cup with 53.5 on his back. But the problem that Ethan might have is that Jimmy Starr and Saran will be competing on the same day. Now, I know Aussie's got a lot of money, but I don't think he can fly him from Sydney to Melbourne in that amount of time. One day it might happen, but not in 2026. So Ethan Brown will join us. John Singleton, he's one of the great characters. Love him, Singo. He's going to join me at the top of the second hour. Blue door. She's going to go very quick. She's going to add a lot of intrigue to the Everest. And she's going to slot in the Newgate GPI racing slot. Of course, she's the daughter of Stay Inside, which stands at Newgate. So Henry Field's done a deal with Singo and Bjorn Baker and the team. So we'll catch up with Singo. Looking forward to that. Yes, as well. I forgot you'd be on your victory lap post-Lions on Saturday. How'd you hold up? How'd the ticker hold up? Um, it was. I thought we were down and out. I thought I was Patrick Payne and D. Oliver on Northerly. Um, I was under the bat. But they found a way, the mighty Lions. So it was great. And I've jumped on the Knights bandwagon as well. I'm loving that story out of the heart. Yeah, why not? Yeah, why not? Why not? Um, Pride of Jenny was back. That just made the weekend even more sweeter. And then I thought Jimmy Starr was excellent. He might be our first point of call here. Like, blinkers on, back to 1,200 metres. What did he do to your clock? Um, Jimmy Starr there on Sunday afternoon. In the Group 1 Manicato Stakes. You said clock, right? Clock, yes. That's what I said. Yes, yes, yes. I beg your pardon?
Speaker 3Jimmy impressed my clock. He did get everyone up and about, Jimmy, however. He did. When he performs like that. It was six to midnight, actually. Yes, yes. Welcome to SBS. I mean, racing.com, anyway.
Speaker 4Great start. He impressed my clock. Yes, yes, yes, yes. Um. Yeah, one, two, three on my clock, which is just short of his very, very best, but good enough to say that this was a return to the best of Jimmy. And it had been a sneaky handful of runs since we'd seen the best of Jimmy. So I know that he's got enough runs on the board that we weren't sad.
Speaker 2He's just frozen. He's got that excited. We just lost him a little bit. So I think someone's called him again. Enough flat runs there. Yeah. Sorry, mate. Gee, we might never see this. Oh, you got me? No. We just lost you. Someone must have called you or something, but we lost you for a little bit. Anyway, take. You were talking about Jimmy Starr.

Speaker 2You are. One, two, three, you were saying.
Speaker 4One, two, three, which was a return to something like his very best, which was good to see because there'd been quite a few runs there where he'd been not poor, but certainly not at the very best of Jimmy Starr. So it was nice to see him show that he's still got it because he just slipped out to enough runs to start to be a little bit concerned that we'd ever see the best of Jimmy again. So we've seen it. And we know what that counts for. And it probably puts him bang there with his old sparring partner, Jolie Starr, the other Starr, and Tempted, of course, who's about as good as them, but probably with a bit more upside and sparkle, I suppose. So she, I suppose, Tempted is our premier sprinter and our biggest stumbling block ahead of Kai Ying Rising. But all of them have, well, all of them just need him to be off his game, don't they?
Speaker 2Yeah. Or not for him to turn up, basically. I had a chat to Ozzy. Yeah. Yeah. Like, he's not guaranteed to go to the Everest. They're still weighing all that up. Obviously, it's a bit different this year with the dominance of Kai Ying Rising. And I just had a look at the slots. Like, Inglis, unless they purchase that slot off Inglis, I don't know if they'll go down that path, being a son of Purr and Canto and a New Zealand-bred galloper, Jimmy Boy. Newgate have gone Blue Door. We'll discuss that in just a moment. Chris Waller Racing. I don't know if you'll give Kira Marr a leg up with Jimmy Starr. He's probably going to go Jolie Starr. Mulberry Racing. Mulberry Racing's an interesting one. I think Savvy Halle, they identified her as their Everest horse, and she did win well last start. Coolmore, I think their three-year-old guest house is their number one seed still. Fairway Thoroughbreds is Ninja. James Harron, he's still undecided. Max Cole, Steve O'Neill. Whitby, Madden, McCann, and Warehead have gone with Headwall. The tab, I reckon, might think about Jimmy Starr now. Kai Ying Rising with the ATC in Hong Kong. Year-long investments. I don't know who they go. Angel Capital's probably still favourite, and Godolphin's got tempted. So there's only a few slots left, really, when you think about it. So surely he gets a slot, but they've just got to get the deal that they want, basically.
Speaker 4Yeah, and you're right. The deals would obviously be differently shaped this year with so much of the EV taken off the table by the big dog from Hong Kong. Jimmy in the tab feels like a reasonable matchup. He's probably been okay. I think it's a fair play to them over the journey. But at the same time, I think he's still a popular horse with punters. I think he's a bit of a. His name's Jimmy, for starters. I think people get around that. I still think the loudest roar I've heard in a pub in the last, say, two years. Of all the good horses we've had running around in the last two years, Jimmy the Bear winning the Winter Championship final absolutely lifted the roof off my local. So there's something about the Jimmys.
Speaker 2What about Blue Door? Did that surprise you that she's going to slot in the EV? Yeah, it probably did.
Speaker 4It probably did. I know they took. Well, I didn't exactly fall off my chair. And someone's got to run in these slots. And she's speedy. And three-year-old fillies have done well in not just the Everest, but wait-for-age races in the spring in general because they get into those races because they're ahead of the curve. So in a sense, before we've even started, they're always well handicapped, if you like. So she's well in. But she's not going to be in the spring. She's also not as fast or as good based on what we've seen so far. And I think we've seen something like.
Speaker 2We might have lost him again. We might get him on the phone, but we'll give him a call. So we'll get his explanation on Blue Door because she was an interesting decision there by Newgate. But you can understand it when you break it all down. So they've done a deal with John Singleton. Singo is one of the great negotiators, along with Henry Field. And Henry Fields decided, well, She's a fast filly, Bjorn Baker, great marketer. She's by stay inside, so we'll use that leverage as well with her getting to the slot because it is one of the most talked-about races on the Australian racing calendar. And as Bjorn Baker pointed out, it is great for business, really, if you've got a horse in a Everest, and that's what they've done with Blue Door. Adam, you were just mentioning that she's very quick. She adds a little bit of a difference to the Everest. She's got that X factor about her. I think she'll be in front with 200 metres to go.
Speaker 4You think she'll be in front with 200 to go? Yeah. Do you reckon? I reckon. I did see all the chatter about her leading Kai Ying and that thing. I think that's really up to Zach, isn't it? Yes. Because Kai Ying is – she's fast and she is speedy, but he's faster and speedier and stronger. So I would think if she tries to really lay up with him between the 800 and the 400, that sort of middle quarter, he will blow her up and she will fall out the back of the telly pretty quickly, I would say. I'd be riding her to run 1,200 as efficiently as she can and try and pick up places. I think that would probably be the
Speaker 2way to go about it. I wonder if they can do that with her.
Speaker 4Yeah. Yeah. I mean, it's not like they're going to be going slowly because Kai Ying's sort of rolling speed is going to be – that's heritage stake speed, if you like, comfortably so. So it's – she'll be allowed to run along at a good clip for her and run as well as she can. I think we'll see the very best of her. I would be surprised if, you know, this sort of scenario should bring out something like the best of her. Where that fits in would be the question and it would be a pretty big question at this point. But as I said, three-armed fillies have slightly overachieved here and I wouldn't be surprised if she's another, but I would be staggered if she was still in front of the 200 of Kai Ying.
Speaker 2Outside of Kai Ying rising, I don't think it's going to be a vintage Everest field. It would be interesting to see. We'll see the makeup of it shortly. What about Guesthouse? What do you make of his performance? Because Michael Kent Jr. told us yesterday that they will push on towards an Everest after his run there in the Golden Rose.
Speaker 4Yeah. So it was a tricky setup going in and it got trickier very quickly as the race developed very quickly. And when you get races like that – so Warwoven has run a really, really fast time. So the time that was required to beat him was really, really – really fast, of course. So when that happens, you really need to be in a complete flow state. The situation for any of those horses to run faster and beat Warwoven in that scenario were things were going to have to go incredibly smoothly and they didn't. He still got lit up, which is interesting when they – we say the pace slackened. It didn't really. He just got lit up when he got on heels a little bit there and then there was the bumping jaw with Goddard and little things like that in a race where the margins are so fine to be able – to be able to run time that quick. The margins are so fine that even the smallest setbacks can have a large effect. So an exponential effect, really. So I think you can be hugely forgiving of horses coming through a scenario like this. So I'd be pretty forgiving with Guesthouse and I'd just press on as per – I'd take very little out of this run for Guesthouse.
Speaker 2Well, Warwoven was very good. Bring on that Caulfield Guineas. I don't know – I don't know about you, but I know you love that Caulfield Carnival, but it's one of the most anticipated – Caulfield Guineas, I reckon, in the last five years. Now, I could be wrong saying that, but that's just the feel that I've got because I think that there's always been maybe one star or two stars, like an Animo back in the day that have headed to a Caulfield Guineas. But this year, like you've got the winner of the Golden Rose going towards a Guineas. Usually they're going towards a Cornwall or something like that.
Speaker 4Yeah, that's true. Oh, it's good that you're looking forward to it. I'm looking forward to the Caulfield Guineas, Gareth. I think I am every year. But, yeah, he will go there with dominant form claims. He will – it's more likely – for the same reasons that I'm saying Guesthouse, we can be very forgiving. With Warwoven, he'll go there with a dominant, dominant rating of the Golden Rose. Yeah. But there is a – there's a lot more left-hand tail than right-hand tail, if that makes sense. Yes. There's a lot more chance of him coming off that rating than going on with it. It's not to say he can't, but there is a lot more chance of him coming off that rating. There's a lot more chance that he goes the other way. And if you look at the history of Golden Rose horses coming to Melbourne off those big peaks in Golden Roses, they do regress quite a bit on average. It's not to say all of them. And then, of course, we've had horses like the Autumn Sun and Ole Kirk come down and do the double. And the Golden Rose has actually been far and away the best form line in a Caulfield Guineas. But the ratings difference between him and, say, Blind Rays is probably not as big on the track in a Caulfield Guineas as it will be on paper going forward. So, I would be a little bit wary of that and a little bit wary of him just reeling off this a little bit if it doesn't go so smoothly. Because it should be said, Rachel King's ride here on Warwoven, and I know maybe some of it is circumstance, but as a. And everyone else will have their commentary. And most commentary around good rides is around the visual aspect of those rides, the bravery and all that, which is fantastic. And when. I love hearing other jockeys praise good rides because you learn something from that. But from my perspective as someone who just sort of nerds out over sectional times, this ride. This ride was awesome. Yeah. To send him through that race. I think the last two splits were sort of 22.96, 22.98. Like, basically, the eight to the four, the four home were identical. And he was just taken through that race so beautifully. It's about as good as it gets, really. So, the end result of that is a huge margin and a big rating. But you've got to back it up. Well, he doesn't have to back it up. I shouldn't say that. He can probably come off this rating and still win a Caulfield Guineas. Certainly a modern Caulfield Guineas, they're typically not one with a rating. But he has had the opportunity and the scenario to do it, whereas the others haven't, really. So, a blind race and even those horses through there still haven't had a race that you'd say really panned out to run a big rating. And then that's where we see that. They don't win as often, but historically, rating to rating, the horses off the Prelude sort of do better than the horses off the Golden Rose. I don't know if I'm making a whole lot of sense there.
Speaker 2Yeah, I think you've got to just try and work out then, and we've seen this a few times, Autumn Boy might be the perfect example going out of last year's Golden Rose into one of the best races. Towards the Caulfield Guineas from a different profile perspective and the way that Waller trains his horses. And you're thinking Trombolt's always going to be peaking for a Caulfield Guineas and not a Golden Rose. So, he's probably got more improvement in him than Warwoven. And even, and then it sounds like, this is what I interpret from you, is that you've got to work out here how much Warwoven might drop slightly and how much Trombolt will increase and whether Trombolt will go past him. But that's the great game, I would imagine. And we try and work all that out.
Speaker 4You're staring into my mind, guys. That's a scary thought. It is actually. But I do see Trombolt there and I do think exactly what you're saying, which is that this race is over. I mean, they've broken 121. Like, this race is finished before Trombolt's even got his teeth into it. Before he said hello. Yeah, whereas the Caulfield Guineas will almost certainly set up differently. They'll get a chance to breathe and he'll get a chance to use his lungs and he'll get a chance to get into the race and get stuck into Warwoven and have a dig at him. And I think that can produce a very different scenario. I don't know what they're going to do with. I don't know what they're doing with Central Europe. My boy. Where are we?
Speaker 2I've jumped off. I loved him and I've always had potential in him. Like, I saw the potential in him and I didn't mind the tactics even though no one knew about them, really, with the change of tactics. That's why they've got to get rid of that rule. Tim Clark's probably the best pointer that you're going to get for a change of tactics when he jumps off. He did go lickety-split, didn't he, in the early part, but. Oh, he barbecued him. Yeah, and he might not come back from that. Like, I went for a run yesterday, first up, for a long, long time and I thought, oh, I might do some 400s and I might not return. You know what I mean? It was a gut-buster. I'm not comparing myself to Central Europe, but what I'm saying is that. It might actually be a fair comparison. You've won as many races as each other.
Speaker 3Yes, we both should be gilded nearly anyway, even though he's the son of Frankel. Yeah, he's spent
Speaker 4his whole life waiting to get into the right race. He's never been in the right race. This is as close as he got to it and he's been given a nice bake, so I'm not sure where. Where is his race now? I'm not sure. And how, as you say, how much does he feel this? The Gareth effect. He might be. He might be a little ginger off the back of this.
Speaker 2I could just imagine Mr. Magni, I don't know if he smokes cigars, but he's in the Caribbean and he's looking forward to watching the Golden Rose and he's sitting up there, Mr. Magni, and he's going, all right then, let's see how we go today. And he sees the high-priced Golden Slipper winner, Guesthouse, having a bumping duel with St. Gothard and then his other horses burning up the carpet there, going ridiculous sectionals out in front in Central Europe and he'd be thinking, what is going on here, Tom? What is going on?

Speaker 4he's no stranger to looking up and seeing one of his high-priced cult things sent out as a pacemaker. So he gets a bit of that at home. He would have looked familiar.
Speaker 2Who says there's team riding? It was great competitive riding. I thoroughly enjoyed that competition between McDonald and Zach. And I think Guesthouse was a little bit to blame, but McDonald made sure he got back into that pocket pretty quickly. He was saying, hey, young buck, I'm the boss here still. Yeah, no, I agree with that.
Speaker 4I think the J-Mac-Zach-Lloyd thing in Sydney is. Yeah, it's one of the big sort of talking points and theater points in Sydney racing at the moment, I reckon. So, yeah, long may that last.
Speaker 2Morning, Gene. My question is, Guesthouse, after he got beaten five and a half lengths in a very rough edition of Golden Rose, when a high-profile colt gets knocked around like that and misses the placings for the first time, do you completely forgive the run due to the racing difference, or is he a sack heading to a high-pressure race like the Everest? That's a good question. I guess that's gut feel once again, in a way. You don't know how a colt will react.
Speaker 4I mean, in a sense, you could say he was stiff in a blue diamond and quickly bounced out of being knocked around in a blue diamond to win a gold slipper. So he can do that for sure and certain. The bigger problem is being able to run to the level that might be required in an Everest, which is going to be higher than he's ever run before, and is he ready to run a peak? I think high-pressure Golden Rose to an Everest, that's a good setup. I like that. Yeah. And, yeah, it's just about whether or not he can run to that level. And if he fronts up, I think there are certain stables, a lot of stables, that I think you just go, okay, if you're happy to front up with him, I'll back the stable in there and they'd be one of the stables that I'd say, yep, if you guys turn up there and you say Guesthouse is ready to rock and roll, I'll take that on face value.

One of the horses that isn't really being mentioned, and its run was huge considering it was still there at the finish after running some very fast sectionals early, working across from that wide barrier. That's from Mitch.
Speaker 4Yeah, great shout. I think that was, I think I'm right in saying that was outside of a Manicato win 12 months ago, the best run of her life. Charmstone. So she's an older man now, but she hasn't lost a yard based on that. And there's, I wonder what the race is for her. I'm not entirely sure where she lands her race. Yeah, it is because she sort of put herself, well, she won two group ones now, I think. So she's put herself in that spot where she sort of has to go chasing the top table. And obviously it's very hard to win at the top table. Yeah. And looking at it, it's the champion sprint, I suppose. But there's a Cox Plate Day where she, she stubbed her toe as an odds-on favourite on Cox Plate Day last year. She might have another stab at that, perhaps down, it'll be down the straight this year, won't it, or at Flemington. So maybe have a stab at something like that. But she was terrific. You're right. She was terrific. She only just blew out in the last little bit. And that was fair enough, given the pace.
Speaker 2True. Yeah. She's a very good mare. Underrated, I reckon. A little bit Charmstone. Trent Mason had put out this yesterday regarding the Danehill form, because someone's just asked, Michael, in fact, good on you, Michael. Thanks for your company on this Tuesday. You said, can you ask the great Adam Blanco? He's top three contenders for the Coolmore. So Guesthouse Natural Fling, equal favourite, St. Gothard at $8. Guesthouse Natural Fling, $7. Blue Dawn, $9. Centerno Glow, $9. The next episode, $9. And then you go to Paradoxium and Eleven Warwoven at $9. Mbube at $17. Having a look at the Danehill, which is always a good lead up down the straight to the Coolmore. You've got the next episode, Natural Fling, Mbube, Big Sky, Ash, Overexcited, Doubt Time, Stretton, Ruler, Ellie Barbar and Bugsy that will compete.
Speaker 4There's a lot of sort of base camp horses there without horses. I mean, Natural Fling is fast and well-made for it. The next episode, the trial pervs are disgusted by his behaviour in the lead up to Saturday. I think they're back.
Speaker 2I think they're back after watching him the other day in Melbourne at Cranbourne. He hit the line. And even at Flemington, he was pretty good down the straight and that jump out. So I've got a feeling that the stable, say, bring on this Danehill. We might, like, he might have not enjoyed the Sydney trials. He thinks it's too early on in the season. Let me, I'll get down to business shortly, but I'm not going to shut off. I can't keep up with these trial pervs.
Speaker 4Unbelievable. They're here, there, they're everywhere.
Speaker 2They were happy with Jimmy Starr. They said, finally, finally, finally. I told you. I told you he was trolling nicely.
Speaker 4They won out in the end. Yes, yes. And it had nothing to do with Jimmy's racing record. No, no, no. I think maybe the next episode, I've seen some commentary around, and I suppose we get this every year a little bit, like you're giddy about the Caulfield Guineas and so you should be. And I would never want to tell anyone not to get pumped up about a race. But I have seen some commentary around that we're looking at a vintage Coolmore and what a great Coolmore it is. And I look at it and think it's lacking for a star. It looks like the two-year-old turned three-year-old crop overall. There's lots of. Lots of nice horses there. There's no absolutely stamped star. Natural Fling's on the cusp of that, and I suppose the next episode looked like he was on the cusp of that as well. But Guesthouse towers over them a little bit, presuming Warwoven's going Guineas and won't be here. Yeah. So Warwoven, for example, runs a really good rating in a Golden Rose. I think in line with what Bivouac did, I think it was only Astern and Manawanui who have run a better number in the Golden Rose itself in the last. Oh, in the history of the Golden Rose, I suppose. It's only a short history. But St Goddard and for second is actually very weak. It's a weak second because there's a huge big chunk of fresh air between Warwoven and the Chasing Pack. And that says a little bit about this crop in general to me. The best races have been either poor or, in the case of the Golden Super and the Golden Rose, well won but without much chasing. So there's still a huge hole there in that Coolmore. The names you read out, I hear a lot of horses that I think, you know, the Mbubes and there's a lot of horses in there that I think that's a really nice horse and one that I'm interested to follow. But is it a Coolmore horse? That feels like a lot. Someone's. But I suppose it is.
Speaker 2Someone needs to put their hand up. And I guess someone will, but we just got to work out which one it will be.
Speaker 4There will be a winner. Yes. I'll guarantee you that much. Take a stab also the next episode. If the trial purves give me the all clear, they give me the green light. I was thinking he was something like it.

Speaker 2The Thousand Guineas is interesting. Regal Ambition is now at $4. Pretty Baby at $5. Regal Ambition went straight past the South Australian Barbados Philly there on Sunday. Like, we don't have much in this. And then Regal Ambition is the one that stood up off in a promising form and really good sectionals first up but even better on the weekend. So now she looks exactly like it to me. So she's a really good favourite. And Pretty Baby had run a strong number before that. And I think she came off it slightly and she can probably bounce back to it. But you'd think that Regal Ambition deserves to be sort of chalked up in front of. of her now. But that looks the A1 form. Does Over the Bridge get there? Will she get there that quickly?
Speaker 2I don't know if she will. I think maybe. I'll have to have a talk to the team. I think they're weighing that all up. But I think that 1,200 metre million dollar three-year-old Phillies race towards the back of the carnival might be her go. But yeah, we'll chase that up with the Kiramar team. I think they're still weighing. She was nice as well.
Speaker 4Yeah. Yeah, so it was sort of a moving day, if you like. We needed movement and we got it on Sunday there at Caulfield. A couple of really nice Phillies. And then you've got the Sydney Phillies, like Sarge is coming down, I assume, with Global Gold. Yeah, he is. She looks exactly like what Sarge brings down to Melbourne every second year and wins something nice. So she's been stamped Wakeful Philly from the day that they sent her to Sarge's joint, I would have thought, Global Gold. So she'll come down and probably run in the 1,000 guineas off the flight and probably the others. They'll fit in, but I think Regal Ambition, where those Phillies are at, like Bangkok, Hoddy & Co and Striking Alibi, Regal Ambition was with them, if not even a touch better than them. They're on the weekend and she's got there very quickly. So she might be the standout.

And his jockey, Ethan Brown, joins us now. Ethan, congratulations. Just describe that feeling for us when you let Jimmy Starr loose down that straight at Caulfield.
Speaker 8Yeah. G'day, Gareth. Yeah, I'm not sure how to describe it, really. It's a feeling like no other. Yeah, he's electric when he's at his best. And we've seen that on Sunday. And yeah, when horses are that electric, I mean, you don't get that very often. No. So it's a hard feeling to describe. But it's certainly good.
Speaker 2And I think your ride was sensational. And Johnny O'Neill and a few others pointed this out yesterday. Is that I think the most important part is when you got squeezed at the start. And you're about a length and a half off the second last horse. You didn't panic. Talk us through your thinking there after the start.
Speaker 8Yeah, well, it was. We had a pre-race plan. And it wasn't to miss the kick like that. But it was just to go back to basics, essentially. It can be. A frustrating horse with his racing style. But yeah, when he missed the kick, it was. Yeah, there's no point panicking and digging him up, especially with the blinkers on the first time. So we had to ride a patient race. The race shot really set up well for him. There was good speed on. We were able to get him to the outside and away he went.
Speaker 2Yeah. He's a fast tempo sprinter that needs tempo on over 1,200 meters. Is that when he's at his best? And you're? Yeah, I think so.
Speaker 8And it certainly helps him. But as you've seen in the Everest, we didn't get a mad tempo. And he drew wide and we're able to slide up. I think he's a horse who just thrives on a bit of room. So, yeah, that sort of get back style when the speed's on suits him. But, yeah, if he does draw wide, he obviously steps slow. But he builds mid-race. Yeah. So we're always looking. We're always learning about him. But, yeah, it's brilliant to see him back to somewhat near his best. That was a super performance. And bearing in mind, he was only second up. So given he comes through the run well, hopefully he can go on with it.
Speaker 2Yeah, exciting times. Was it the blinkers or was it the setup that saw the real Jimmy Starr?
Speaker 8Yeah, I think we put the blinkers on just to change things up a bit. But in all honesty, I think if the blinkers, if they weren't applied on Sunday, that he still would have won the same way in the same fashion. He's a genuine horse. And, yeah, I think what happens Sunday just proves the sort of horse he is and the setup that he needs in his races to get the best out of him.
Speaker 2I guess it's an interesting, well, it's a good dilemma to have. But when you're a top jockey, you want to have to make these decisions. But I think Ozzie Kerr told me this morning that they'll make a decision on Jimmy Starr. Whether he goes to an Everest or not and whether he can get the deal that he wants by Thursday. And if he does go down that path, then you're on Saran at 53.5 in a Caulfield Cup. Have you decided what you would be doing or would you be talking to Ozzie to see what the best move would be?
Speaker 8Yeah, there's no decision being made yet. The beauty of that is they're two very good horses trained by Kieran and owned by Ozzie and his crew. So, yeah, we haven't made, well, I haven't made a decision yet. Obviously, moving day on Saturday with Saran and Turnbull will tell us a lot. But, yeah, we'll let that work itself out. I mean, Ozzie and Johnny will have a big input with what they have to say. So, we'll let that unfold. Yeah, it's a good problem to have, but they're two very good horses and it's a decision that won't be made lightly.
Speaker 2And 53.5, when we had a chat to Ozzie last week, he said that you said there'd be no problems. Have you already started the campaign to get down to that weight if you need to for the Caulfield Cup?
Speaker 8Yeah, I have. I have started that. I started that when Saran won in the fashion that he did. But my weight is really good. I've been training well and eating well. So, yeah. That won't be a problem. Yeah, I've been getting to the races well under the weight that I've needed to be riding. And to put that into perspective, I've been riding 55 every Saturday. So, I'm well on track if that event's right.
Speaker 2It's exciting, mate. So, well done on the weekend. You've got some nice rides tomorrow. Semantics, Salaray and Handy. It was a handy victory when you took off there the other day for Jason Warren.

Speaker 2wonderful retirement his story's inspiring in many ways as i pointed out before and um he set back after one he won that group one two-year-old race the jj atkins and then he was he was the talk of australian racing in the early part of his three-year-old season um and then you nearly lose him with that terrible injury in sydney um and we thought that he would be retired five or six years ago and he's probably had there'd been times i would imagine robbie that you would have retired him on a few occasions but he always found a way to come back um yeah
Speaker 12he did and that that's the amazing story about him gareth that he suffered an injury that for most horses would have been the end of their career and he wasn't too far away from being the end of his life to be honest it was that bad but look he kept coming back and as you said in your intro he was an extraordinary horse that of his 47 starts 17 of them were group ones and 10 of them were group twos so he's pretty much raced at the highest level for the latter half of his career and pretty much each campaign you know he took us to the top of the mountain he always gave us plenty to cheer about that's for
Speaker 2sure and he taught you a lot i guess i think he taught a lot of people a lot off fire throughout his career in yeah and i
Speaker 12think that's what you know it's part of the aussie racing psyche to a degree isn't it the underdog you know you get up off the canvas and it's like i'll buffering in those early days from in my career and i think that's what he taught me and i think that's what i think he taught me in my career he had 18 runs in a group one before he won one and then he won you know seven of his next 12 starts and rothy's been sort of not dissimilar in that he was always a little bit of an underdog and and here he was at two winning a group one and he set an australasian record winning another group one you know at the ripe old age of eight really quite a story do you

Speaker 12get in the office and open a couple of bottles of red we watch it over and over again we do that pretty regularly but now it's look as i said i'm not sad i'm actually very happy it feels like a relief to be honest because every time we put a saddle on his back and and i'm i was busily arranging a new home for him yesterday and and ollie's ollie's on his way back from melbourne he's been looking after him he's my right hand man and uh he's been looking after him he's been looking after him he's been looking after him um and i think ollie's keen to have him so we're going to get him re re rehomed and retrained under the uh the queensland off the track program up here and i think ollie's going to be the first to put his hand up to look after him for the rest of his career so all rest of his life so yeah that's great news and

Speaker 2disappointing because highwayman obviously the state ledger winner he's he rated similar to young bruegel who um we've mentioned this a few times if i can recall i don't know brian said he would have been a moral basically if he rocked up there to that first tuesday and in november for that melbourne cup but he didn't pass the ct scan so um they've decided to keep him at home highwayman which is a little unfortunate because he would have been hard to beat i would imagine in a melbourne cup so um he's still going to play a major part joseph o'brien and at least those internationals we talk about them a lot in the last month or so trent but it's just good to see the first shipment here and then you'll see horses like james j braddock and trust your instinct and as you point out the stinger glass the japanese horse arrive here in a few
Speaker 13weeks time yeah that's and Olivia Cold, my colleague, will be out on the beat there to wherever she usually is at this time of year and be able to update the viewers and the listeners with all the latest on how they're settling in, which is, you know, it's such a key part of it, isn't it, with so much travel involved, how they settle in and acclimatise. So stay tuned for the latest information there. But, no, they add an interesting element to these races and looking forward to seeing what they can do in the next, well, next month or so.

Speaker 13Yeah, so I touched base with Danny Rolston from Yulong yesterday and this was more so me just thinking that maybe they pivot and go to a Cox Plate as opposed to sticking to the original plan of the Caulfield Cup. But Danny's saying at this stage, assuming she comes through the run fine and that she hasn't suggested otherwise at this point in time, a day or so afterward. They will continue on to the Caulfield Cup at this stage, but they are leaving the door open. or a jar for a Cox Plate should they decide to change their mind and pivot. So her next run will be most likely the Might and Power stakes. At least there's another rival there for Shiza Alibi. I've got three or four at this stage, including Treasure of the Moment, Kingswood and Zambardo that will take on Shiza Alibi on Saturday week over the 2000 at Caulfield in the Group 1 Might and Power.
Speaker 2Yeah, and it's going to be interesting with that Might and Power because there's a few horses, even Chris Wallace stable, like Buckaroo and Birdman. Set weights and penalties, it's a different ball game compared to, say, from a weight for age, Might and Power. So they're just weighing that up, especially with a horse like Birdman. But Birdman, and then the weather's going to be dependent as well because there's a lot of rain at Flemington. So there's some trainers that want to avoid a wet track. And so they might keep their horses for that Might and Power because they think it's a better lead up to their big grand final. So there's still a lot. There's still a lot to play out regarding, I reckon, the Turnbull on Saturday.
Speaker 13Yeah, that's right. I put up the Lockley field, post the meeting there on Caulfield on Sunday. And look, it's an indicative field only. I mean, there's no guarantee that that will be 100%. As you say, there's still so much to play out. And that weather could be significant, Gareth. We know Flemington's such a great draining track, but I think there's up to 20 mil forecast on Thursday and 15 on Friday. So I'm not sure how that impacts things for Liam O'Keefe and his team. And it depends on how much we get, I suppose. But, yeah, you're right. Ozzie Keer said that he might change and run one or two of his in the Might and Power. He's got Light Infantryman, Birdman, Buckaroo, Middle Earth. So, yeah, I'm not sure how the field is going to play out. We'll wait to see what happens with the acceptances tomorrow. But it's going to be a very strong race. Serdelius, obviously, there. Vauban was an interesting nomination yesterday. I didn't have him in my mix, so I'm not sure if they accept with him. And half yours, who worked out. Or Gallop this morning, I should say, at Flemington for the McAvoy's. And they're pretty bullish on how he's going as well. So, no, it's going to be a beauty. And the Dane Hill as well, as you know, I'm very excited about, G.
Speaker 2You are. I'm going to play a grab from Jack Turnbull. You caught up with Jack Turnbull yesterday at Kiramar Stable. And you asked him about one of your favourite horses. I don't know if he's your favourite at the moment, even though he's only won the one race, the next hour, a couple of races. But the next episode, he will go around in the Dane Hill. Once upon a time, he was the favourite for the Coolmore. He'll be the favourite. If he can win the Dane Hill, he'll be the favourite for the Coolmore. He'll be the favourite for the Dane Hill down that straight at Flemington. And this is what Jack had to say to you yesterday, Trent, when you were at his stables there at Cranbourne.
Speaker 13And the Dane Hill is going to be a hot race up the straight on Saturday and lead up to the Coolmore. And you run your good cult the next episode.
Speaker 14We do, yeah. He's really come on. Had a look down the straight on Thursday and chased a hot filly in McAvoy's out in front. But for what we were there to do, essentially just taking a look down the straight, we were extremely pleased. They himself ran pretty quick splits. And, you know, physically he's come on. So got a good feeling about him. He's a talented animal and looking forward to getting him back to the track Saturday.
Speaker 13He's really turned a corner and come of age since he's come down to Melbourne, hasn't he?
Speaker 14Yeah, he has. He's just, with the weather up in New South Wales, he was just hanging on to his skin a little bit and he was holding on to his weight. So he's had that trial. He's had the jump out. He'll do a little bit of work tomorrow and then we'll be off and racing. But physically, you look at him now in a bit of light and he's. He looks spot on.
Speaker 2Are you believing in him, Trent? After watching him trial the last couple of times, one at Cranbourne and then, of course, jumping out at Flemington last week?
Speaker 13Yeah, I'm certainly more confident than I was after his two jump outs in Sydney, G. But I'll probably go there on Saturday hoping that he does it. I'm not confident that he can beat Natural Fling given where she is in terms of her preparation. She's had that really slick jump out the other day. She was good in the moya. Her first up win was exceptional. So I'd have her ahead of the next episode at the moment. But I'd just love for him to come out and make his statement there on Saturday. You know, high-priced yearling who was a good two-year-old. He beat her fair and square on the Gold Coast, had to do it the hard way. And I just think it would be really good for the Coolmore if he can come out and put his hand up there on the weekend. The other runner I'm really looking forward to seeing in that race, G, among others, is Pocketful of Cash. We've seen Lucy Yeomans have a horse that's really put her on the map and is now the flag bearer for her in changing colours. I think this could be the same. Same horse for Rhys Goodwin. He's such a talented horse, this guy. Admittedly, it was a Pakenham synthetic maiden win where he created that big impression and he's got to stand up and go up a few gears to be competitive with this lot. But the way he's been working, I've seen a lot of him at Cranbourne and Rhys has just got that little glint in his eye that I think he knows he's got a pretty good one here. So hopefully he can really put his hand up there and become a really good horse for Rhys Goodwin, who's a really good young trainer.
Speaker 2Some news on Smoochino. Former WA star that's now, of course, based in South Australia.
Speaker 13Yep. So Indiana Wynette made the move from Albany to Goolagy in the last 12 months and she's got her stable star, Smoochino, who's had a first-up run in Adelaide where he ran third in listed grade. So he'll have his first run at Flemington. What an occasion this will be for Indiana Wynette to have a runner on a big meeting at Flemington in a Group 2 guild guy up the straight, up against some of the best trainers in the country and as well. For her jockey, Austin Gallardi, and I'm glad they're sticking with him and he'll come across. I spoke to him on text yesterday. He's riding at Kalgoorlie on Thursday, G, and then flying over to Melbourne on Friday. So I'm going to have a chat to him later today and do a feature story on Austin and just what it means to have a ride on a big spring carnival meet at Flemington. I just think it's a great story and he'll be highly competitive. He's such a talented horse, Smoochino. We've seen him mix it with some of the good sprinters from over our side in the quarterfinals and races like that and it'll be a really good test and no doubt a massive occasion for both trainer and jockey.
Speaker 2I'm sure William Pike will look after Austin when they get to Flemington on Saturday. Of course, Pikey back in town to ride Cosmic Crusader. Just quickly, mate, there's a few text messages coming through. Speaker 13Yeah, interesting. I spoke to Matty Smith yesterday. Still undecided. He wanted to have a good look. Look at the nominations. And he'll leave his call late. Craig Williams is booked to ride him in Melbourne if he runs in the Bart Cummings. Okay. Plaintiff? I'm not sure on that one. I'll have to follow that up. Just some news. A couple that are missing from the Dane Hill. I can let you know. Paradoxium goes to the Roman Consul. He will not run in the Everest for Yulong, so it's still looking like Angel Capital for them. And the other one going to the Roman Consul is Sotono Glover. I think many thought she might be in the Dane Hill as well. So she goes back to Sydney.
Speaker 2Best thing, the Jimmy Star. They're going to make the decision by Thursday regarding the Everest. So I'm just having a look at the slots there for the Everest. So you've got Inglis. The big news yesterday in Australian racing was the appointment, the official appointment of Graeme Hinton as the Chief Executive Officer of Racing NSW. He was, it was a unanimous decision by Racing NSW Board to appoint Graeme Hinton as their CEO. He will officially start on December 1, of course. He's been the interim CEO now for a few years. He's been the interim CEO now for a few months with Peter Volandis working with the NRL. But he's been at Racing NSW as Peter Volandis' right-hand man now for more than a decade. And he joins me to talk about his appointment here on Giddy Up. Graeme, first of all, congratulations.
Speaker 15Thanks, Gareth. Appreciate it. And thanks for having me.
Speaker 2This is something that I would imagine that you've always wanted to do.
Speaker 15Yeah, I wouldn't lie if I did say it was something I coveted. I think I jumped on your program straight after Peter making the announcement. He was going, and said it was a job I wanted. And I'm very, very excited and humbled by the fact I've now been given that opportunity.
Speaker 2So did you always expect to get this role? How long has the preparation been in the planning of you taking over from Peter Volandis?
Speaker 15Look, 10 years as Chief Operating Officer, I think I wouldn't have stuck out this long if I didn't think there was a prospect of getting there in the end. And likewise, you know, I think the board's view was, well you know having done that succession plan it was I was a natural person to step in when peter went on leave and then they met beyond that and did their own consultation and formed a view and as i said it's humbling really to be given that that chance now and i'm also very very grateful to peter and all his support that has not just sort of trained me and taught me how to be a good racing administrator but sort of helped me build some relationships in this industry that i think you're going to allow us to take things forward and get even better
Speaker 2yeah um what did you learn the most from peter voland he's working alongside him
Speaker 15it's a good question peter's contrary to the view that a lot of people see peter in the media which is often quite a strategic part of how he operates peter valued loyalty above all else and and when he got loyalty he gave it back in spades and i think that's a really really important character trait it's something that's that's often lost in some people and and they have a transactional nature of working with you whereas when people come and they see you and it's a very upfront and honest conversation you aren't always going to agree and you aren't always going to be on the same page and you may not always get a deal done but if you if you can act with integrity and and approach things the right way that that allows you to build that loyalty and and that's the sort of relationships that i think this industry is going to need as it moves into the future where we are going to have some challenges and we do need to work on it together what is your biggest challenge maintain the most important thing is maintaining racing's relevance which relies on us having a really strong communication plan publicly around our equine welfare programs and and gambling harm and also to maintain that relevance you need to be an exciting entertainment prospect we're competing for people's disposable income so to do that you need to be enjoyable and if racing gets to the point where we aren't enjoyable we aren't cool we aren't something that people want to be doing with their time then we'll go ahead and do that and we'll do that and we'll do that and we'll do that backwards very very quickly it's
Speaker 2a i guess it's a fine line because we are in the entertainment business um and the majority of our revenue is from the punting dollar um how do you make sure that you as you pointed out with responsible gambling make sure you're on top of that but also encouraging people to to punt and and telling everyone it's okay to punt
Speaker 15look it comes down to being an entertainment expense and i think a healthy industry fund by wagering is funded by people who spend whether it's a hundred dollars two hundred dollars fifty dollars whatever their budget may be but spends within their budget and enjoys it so to achieve that you've got to grow your pool of customers and one of the misconceptions in this industry is that oh we want we you know we want big punters and we want to lose their money and and that we enjoy seeing you know seeing people with gambling problems that's not what we want and it's not healthy if we see that so i i went the pitch and i said i'm not going to do that i'm not going to with alongside Aaron Morrison, Paul Erickson and Andrew Horlacy from Thoroughbred Breeders, we went and appeared at the Senate inquiry into the gambling reform legislation. And I tried to really hammer home that point. And I, you know, they gave these examples of some pretty poor conduct by some wagering operators a few years ago. And we agreed with them. We said, look, that's abhorrent. We don't support that. We don't want that. We want an industry funded from people that are betting within their means. And we need to push that message out there. The analogy I often give is if I had the choice of going out for dinner and drinks with some friends and spending $300 on a bottle of wine or going to the pub with a couple of mates having a few beers and spending $300 having a punt, I'd pick going to the pub every time. And that's how I choose to spend my entertainment budget. And that's the narrative I think we need to get out there more often. And it's not easy to do, but it's something we're going to have to keep doing over time.
Speaker 2Does racing look after the punter well enough?
Speaker 15There. Be a customer at the end of the day. So I think any business that says, yes, they look after their customer well enough is probably resting on their laurels. So I'll say, no, we don't. And there's no single silver bullet solution to any of those problems. And there's also a completely diverse range of punters. It's very different. A professional punter who earns their living from this industry as compared to a punter who spends $20 every Saturday afternoon having fun with his friends. So there's no easy fix to that. But there are some very common things that are very important to all punters, like accurate and timely information, access to vision and access to replays and access to tips. And those sort of things are common to all. And as well as maintaining a really important integrity system. So it's at the forefront of my mind because looking after our customers is the only way that we not only sustain our revenues, but we grow them moving forward.
Speaker 2How has turnover been?
Speaker 15It's a little bit up and down. In New Zealand, it's a little bit up and down. In New South Wales at the moment, as compared to last year, because we had a pretty bad run of weather last year. So we're well in front, but it's a bit hard to gauge the actual market. I'm quite positive for what the Spring Carnival will hold for a couple of reasons. I think the federal government legislation, now that it's passed and the wagering operators have some certainty, I think you're going to see them be able to open their shoulders up and advertise a little bit more and also promote generosities a bit more because they know what the framework is that they can and can't do. So that should yield some benefit to punters, should yield some more revenue for us, which is a good thing. I think also Tabcorp's launch of the OnePool will coincide with some promotions from the corporate bookmakers as they sort of counteract Tabcorp's momentum there. So again, I think that would only be a good thing.
Speaker 2What will the national tote look like for the punters? And when does it come into play? There's been different dates that have been circled around. Even we thought maybe it was happening last month or so. But when will the national tote come into play?
Speaker 15Look, to be honest, I don't know the answer to that. We granted our approvals for it a couple of months ago now. It is not an easy thing to do. I don't envy the Tabcorp technology and regulatory teams having to coordinate all of this across all the different states as well. You've got to appreciate that the national tote that's been put together hasn't blown up the historical structures of each of the state-based totes. They've just smashed the pools together. So that requires a bit of work to stand it up. But it was also the fastest way to get it done. I think the national tote will add another dynamic to the market. It won't be a wholesale change. It won't change the world. But it will allow some customers, especially winning customers, somewhere else to get set for a bet. And I think that's a good thing.
Speaker 2Yeah. Your relationship, racing New South Wales relationship with the breeding industry, how would you describe that?
Speaker 15Look, I've had texts from most of the major breeders in Australia and the New South Wales Breeders Association and the Oswald Spurred Breeders Australia in the last couple of days to say congratulations. I think they want to work with us. And I think there's a lot of water that's gone under the bridge now, especially over the past 12 months that you've seen the patent matters being shifted over to the Asian Patent Committee to review. My general ethos, and I'm not diminishing the patent or the importance of the patent to breeders, but as a punter, they don't really care. The Golden Eagle, being a Group 1 or not a Group 1, does not change the amount of betting on the race. The Everest, whether it was or wasn't, doesn't change anything. In fact, we made fun of sort of promoting it, that it was the best race that wasn't a Group 1. So it doesn't change that core product, but it is important for breeders. Therefore, it is important for us and we do listen to them. We are going to head into a period over the next couple of years where we need to find a pathway out of it being managed by Asia. It's not the first thing I want to tackle in my tenure as CEO, but it is something that is going to come up. And as I've said to many people over the last few months and years, we're happy to talk to you. Come and see me, try and work out a way to get it done and we'll listen. I can't always guarantee we'll deliver what you want, but I'll at least hear how we can do it and take your views on board.
Speaker 2And the other interesting, talking point now with your appointment is Racing NSW's relationship with Racing Victoria. At the end of the day, you're rivals because you're competing for the same dollar. But will there be a chance that maybe you work a little bit more closely now with Racing Victoria?
Speaker 15Look, what a lot of people also don't see is that we work very closely with them every day. Our stewards and investigators and vets and racing departments are in dialogue with Racing Victoria's equivalent on a daily basis. We do a lot of work at Racing Australia to manage the national ecosystem of racing. There's been this furphy for a while that, oh, Racing Australia is incompetent, it doesn't meet, it doesn't progress anything. Well, it actually progressed hundreds of things every year. It just had an ideological issue around the patent because there was a competition law problem. So it is a bit of a misconception, but that being said, you know, Aaron Morrison picked up the phone with me and said congratulations the other day. He and I have known each other for a little while and we're happy to have a dialogue. As I said to him and I've said to a few others lately, there'll be times where we're apart. You can't always agree on everything. And in fact, when you're in competition, more often than not, we're going to be apart on a matter. But as long as you treat that respectfully and you approach issues in the right frame, I think that's a way that at least you can move forward and land the things you can land and understand where there's things that you can't.
Speaker 2And I think that's one of the most important things that we've done in the last year or so. Yeah, I think that's one of the most important things that we've done in the last year or so. be different to peter volandis
Speaker 15well there's only one peter volandis i'd be very very foolish if i thought for a second i could live up to his uh scale of achievements or certainly his way of doing business uh i think i'd crash and burn very quickly if i tried to do either of those uh i can only approach this job in my own lens you know i grew up following this industry i've loved it since i was a teenager and betting on it since long long before i probably should have been um so i approach it through the lens that every day i come to work and try and make it better i take the burden that i've got stewardship of an industry here that employs somewhere like 35 000 people in new south wales provides enjoyment to hundreds of thousands and that that lands on my shoulders under the direction of the board so i take that very seriously and everything i do will be to protect those jobs and keep this industry going in the right direction
Speaker 2yeah um how excited are you now it's been officially announced and um we all know that you're the new ceo and it'll fish like you're you're doing the job as we speak but um it's your job on december 1. yeah look i'm
Speaker 15a very humble person i just want to get on and do it now yeah uh you know it was a very somewhat of a surreal day yesterday with all the announcements and text messages and congratulations i just want to get in and do the job i've got an afternoon full of meetings lined up with people to uh take on board their views and solve some problems and uh rip and tear that's all i want to do now and
Speaker 2the everest has been amazing it's a sellout
Speaker 15yeah it's a sellout it's a game changer yeah in sydney uh we're a bit envious of uh victoria not for many things but one thing we're envious of victoria for is you do events yeah we don't have events in sydney we there's a grand final on this weekend which will be a sellout and it'll be great and that's it so the everest come along out of nowhere and all of a sudden sydney has another major event it's not just an event for racing and it sells out and it's great for us it's actually good for our city and we do it all ourselves we get not we don't get one cent from the state government or from destination new south wales we roll our sleeves up we promote it we encourage people to fly in from overseas and interstate and we've we've created a behemoth now and it's sold out before i spent one dollar marketing or promoting it and sold out in record time so we're very proud of that but we also don't rest on our laurels we've now got to grow the days around it we've got to make sure the everest keeps up that momentum moving forward
Speaker 2it's quite astonishing really how quickly it has grown the everest it is
Speaker 15and the bit that actually surprises me is it gets younger every year see our concern was we were quite proud in the early days we we recruited the younger audience that's what we were trying to do and we thought well that audience might stay with the race and the average age of attendance would go up over time the opposites happened it's actually the average age of attendance has gone down last year was the youngest everest in history i haven't got the stats for this year yet but that that's a really an amazing achievement when you think about it that racing has continued to attract a next generation of audience year on year now for
Speaker 210 years can you get stats and data that that um tells you if that younger crowd stays in racing after going to a day like the everest
Speaker 15we do every person every other race meeting they go to we track all of that i'm very much a details guy and one of my favorite things is the end of the carnival being able to go and look at all of that it informs us where things go wrong as well so there have been everests in the past where we had a low conversion rate in terms of a low number of people that came back to other events and then you look at it you go through your customer surveys and you realize well you know the with between us and the atc we didn't put out enough toilets we had the bar cues were too long we've got to deploy more people to different areas of the track and we've learned over time how to do that better and better um so yeah look the answer is yes we track them all and it's one of our very very high priorities to get them coming back the
Speaker 2big question now is who replaces you as ceo yeah
Speaker 15someone knows uh glutton for punishment i reckon um look the reality is i'll probably look to put a couple of people on um spread that workload a little bit and and just see then who steps up so i'm a big believer that you've got to earn it i'm not gonna i don't have anyone in mind if i drop straight into that role we'll look to recruit a couple of people we've got some in our business at the moment and i want to keep bringing them through the ranks too so i don't want to discourage any of those from having their eyes on my job one day i now want to sort of uh spread that load and see who steps up over the next couple of years well graham

Speaker 2welcome back to giddy up 049736736 to join our conversations being a big show so graham hinson he takes over from peter volandes is in that interim ceo role as we speak but he will be officially um appointed the ceo of racing new south wales on the 1st of december so big shoes to fill um but he thoroughly deserves that job he's he's got a similar story to aaron morrison in a way he's done a great job leading race in victoria um they were both ceos for a long period of time they know that business inside of out uh inside out there got a passion for the racing game and he's got a passion for the racing game and he's got a passion for the racing game and um yeah he gets his chance now to lean in his own way there with racing new south wales and i think the interesting part reading the um articles regarding his appointment there's a lot of the the big industry players there including someone like gay waterhouse that have uh applauded the um announcement and his appointment as the ceo of racing new south wales so he's got the the support of the industry behind him i guess it's a new chapter in a way as well in new south wales racing very interesting to see how he goes but as you've just heard he's been on giddy up a couple of times he's a very good operator and um yeah he gets to build his own legacy now at the helm of racing new south wales um paulie sebastiani we've got bag of tips coming up shortly looking forward to that we do midweek master class i enjoy the midweek master class at this time of the year because there's some nice horses going around both in sydney and also ballarat there tomorrow

Speaker 17we all mom and dad started the business in 1987 so it's their 40th year of business um they basically started in their garage and they've grown it to a company that exports product all around the world um we've got product in the u.s new zealand we're about to launch into europe and um it was just a small little business in sydney and that's what it's a great
Speaker 2australian story really with your mom and dad having a crack and building this business up from scratch yeah so
Speaker 17basically they they went into business to to pay for racehorses that's that's where it's where it's all started so
Speaker 2the racing's always been in
Speaker 17their blood yeah they they love the racing so they've got a few horses so what in the
Speaker 2world do you think is going to inspire them to do this business like or what what was the brainchild for them to to think well we can make a go of this
Speaker 17yeah i think um early on when dad was a kid he had he had they had a little farm and they had obviously issues with animals and he really was interested in the health and well-being of animals so um that's what the products that we we've developed are for and for the health
Speaker 2and well-being of animals yeah and so like the racing industry um we've developed a number of different um other businesses regarding the the industry to help the animals so um tell us a bit about your association with the racing game yeah
Speaker 17so we we're all the way from um you know broodmare farms and stud farms all the way into um the racing and racing and training side of the business yeah um we've you know we've we've um we're across new zealand with with uh living my classic we've done that for 14 years so that's a group one that comes up on the 10th of july and we've done that for 14 years so that's a group one that comes up on the 10th of october yeah um we're heavily involved in harness racing as well um we've been sponsoring the menangle races for a long time and yeah before that harold park
Speaker 2yeah and your products and all that obviously they've been a success and you've been able to um build a strong business behind them so who's been obviously there's a lot of science that goes into all of this and you must have a really good
Speaker 17team behind you yes we've got an r&d team we've got um we've got a vet that for over 25 years his his background's microbiology um we've got qa chemist and a regulatory affairs
Speaker 2person yeah yeah so the world keeps on changing obviously you would have had to continue on to develop these these different products as well over time yeah so
Speaker 17i mean like even the biowormer project we started that in 1997 um it's taken us took us 20 years to come up with a registration now we've got registrations in 30 countries tell us about that biowormer yeah so biowormer is a fungus um it was originally isolated on pasture it's fed to grazing animals it passes through the animal um intact and then into the manure and when the worm the parasitic worm larvae hatch it consumes the um parasites in the manure and breaks
Speaker 2the worm cycle okay then um and so now it's it's been you can take that all around the world
Speaker 17yep so yeah it's it'll be you know 30 over
Speaker 230 countries yeah and so if you're a trainer in the racing industry and you want to use some of the products like how do you go about approaching you in a way like how does that how does that all unfold so you get the best out of your athlete as well yeah so
Speaker 17all of our products are available through all good produce stores um our veterinary medicines are available from vets so you can get those from your vet as well
Speaker 2yeah and um you're working clay like i think you're pretty busy at

Speaker 17yeah so i did i did my 10 years um a few weeks ago and we had a little celebration for that so that's really
Speaker 2good and you enjoy it was it everything that was always something that were you pushed into it or you wanted to get into
Speaker 17it oh i did i did a degree at uni um i did ag science at uni and i did a degree at university and i did a degree at university i've always had an interest in my i mean my my final year project was on the biowormer and i went out and did a few things and then decided that my dad said oh i think it's time to join the business and i i started off i've packed product i've mixed product i've i've done all that but um i've represented the company in the us and um in in uae and new zealand and all over australia and it's been it's been fantastic
Speaker 2was it something that you expected it to be once you got inside that business no definitely not what surprised
Speaker 17you most um just just the enjoyment of being in the business and satisfaction of being part of a part of the family business yeah you've had some
Speaker 2wonderful products livermole comes to mind yeah
Speaker 17so livermole's been around for for over 70 years and still still the number one is it still number one yeah why is it so popular um i think it just gets results that's yeah that's the main thing is gets gets results yeah

Speaker 17at the moment i'd have to say tempted tempted's probably the best horse um i mean i i i took a like until before she ran in the golden slipper um and i followed her through her whole career i think she's just a fantastic filly do
Speaker 2you know which horses are using your products oh there's a whole there's a whole yeah um and so like and you've got a few racing in your colors i see in the the um oz horse colors you've got attrition who was very good there the other day osbury color sorry yeah he was very good the other day yeah so
Speaker 17he'll run in the hill stakes in a couple weeks time he's won the hill stakes before do you reckon he can win again i think he's he's he's going very well um mitch friedman's got high hopes for him this prep so um and and mom dad really excited they had a cox plate runner last year there even though he ran fourth they still had a cox plate
Speaker 2yeah i guess that's everyone's dream melbourne cup cox plate i guess the everest these days as well yeah um out of the horses that we need to be following in your colors
Speaker 17um we've got a couple of young ones coming through we've got just osbred who's a justify filly she's out of a half sister to done deal yep um and we've got osbred waratah who's a half to suntora she's by gayeth yeah um they're two two-year-olds i think that'll be really exciting they'll be trained by brad witter out at
Speaker 2hawksbury and so you use a few different trainers i think um brad witter um friedman mitchell friedman you've got horses with
Speaker 17kieran maher yeah um we've got she's an artist with kieran maher yeah um but i think yeah the exciting ones are those young two-year-olds they're so well bred um we picked him out as weanlings they should have been pinhooks but um dad decided to keep both tell us a bit about the
Speaker 2pinhooking journey that you guys
Speaker 17have got yeah so um i i said a few years ago we should we should pinhook a few because we didn't want to we're not bringing as many as what we have we still have at one mare we've got a mare due to lofty strike we we think he's a really up-and-coming stallion so um but we we bought a street boss colt for 160 000 at the english weanling sales yeah and sold him for 290 000 he's with um friedman's now yeah and he looks like he'll push on as a two-year-old as well like most of the street bosses have yeah um and then next year we've got a poise out of a half sister to star spangled banner that's going to um english sales and then we've also got an ole kirk philly as well okay my
Speaker 2special guest shannon lawland sales manager and international animal health of obviously their family have been involved in this business um since 1987 chris and lynn lawler and they are big players in the australian industry both the racing and breeding industry do you get more of a thrill pinhooking one or winning a race
Speaker 17oh it's pretty nerve-wracking pinhooking yeah because you don't know what the result's going to be no um and i mean you well i think we had about 40 inspections on that street boss colt and 16 hits on x-ray and i mean he's ended up in a good stable so obviously and we kept a share as well so just for interest
Speaker 2and so do you breed to sell or breed to race um we're breeding breeding less but we always
Speaker 17breed to race
Speaker 2yeah and like with your products they're international animal health um i guess when you're pinhooking it's important to get their nutrition right yeah 100 so can you give anyone some advice out there that are listening to you obviously you're an expertise in this field but um what is the best way to go about to develop your young horse, regardless if you want to move them on and you want of pinhook them i guess even if you want to make sure that they're ready to go by the time they
Speaker 17become a racehorse i mean we've got a product called livermole feed optimizer pellets and it's got a whole heap of vitamins and minerals amino acids it's got um probiotics and enzymes and everything in there to to help those young growing horses and the studs that have used it they get excellent results um and i think you know that's that's the building blocks is getting the vitamin mineral supplement right from the beginning and they

Speaker 17yeah i actually i actually breed cattle i've got cattle here at the show i bought them down from we drove we drove out to forbes and put them on a truck and they've they've headed down here so they've done about 13 hours of driving and they'll um they'll get shown tomorrow afternoon noon at the melbourne show so

Speaker 2will new zealand try and get him back or do you reckon or because he's a sort of state or do you think he'll stay in australia i think probably
Speaker 19having won that race gareth that there's probably some australian interest and i am hearing that there is a bit of interest in him it probably just comes down to the fact of of what sort of number they want to pay and you know if the if the ownership group are happy to sell a piece or the whole lot of the horse or what happens next is probably up in the air for the next couple of weeks but is it doesn't it make the caulfield guineas a very very interesting race it is going
Speaker 2to be a great race i mentioned this dad and blinko before it's it's the best build up to a caulfield guineas that i can remember for quite some time guy
Speaker 19yeah and we're going to have you know we're going to have the melbourne horses and the sydney horses coming together for the first time you know in in big bigger numbers you know i know that uh i know that guest house was in the golden rose on the weekend but we probably didn't get a totally totally you know true line on him with the interference but uh but the winner was still pretty pretty bloody good wasn't he yeah i think it's going to be a great race i think it's going to
Speaker 2yeah and like even trombone he had an autumn boy type of run i reckon heading towards the caulfield guinea so i reckon he's on the way up where the way woven peak there on saturday i guess time will tell yeah well
Speaker 19we don't have to wait long it's only another 10 or 12 days away isn't
Speaker 2it would you be scared if you're blind raised or do you think he deserves to be favorite the melbourne cult um i don't
Speaker 19think blind raise really brings any convictions to the race it's been pretty impressive and you know when they when they're going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be when they whipped around the outside of him the other day you know like he did a pretty good job to lift you know when horses get taken on before the turn it's often very hard for them to find find again but he did it pretty easy didn't he and
Speaker 2what does that this mean for new zealand racing in a way or the breeding industry to have a sort of state do that that was his first group one winner of course blind raises by um um ace high yeah so it's um it's good for the new zealand breeding industry guy definitely
Speaker 19yeah so it's every every little bit helps when you you know australia's got a lot of big studs and a lot of big stallions but new zealand's only got a you know a few commercial stallions and for horses like that to get on the big days in australia it makes a big difference what did

Speaker 19it's sort of been pretty well documented really gareth i mean it happened it probably didn't need to happen it probably didn't make anybody happy and turn the page and get on to the next

Speaker 19uh yeah i think so i think uh it'll be interesting to see what paths they take i'd say guest house would probably freshen up and go to the uh you know the everest which which would be good i think uh i think 1200 meter pace he'll probably be a bit more attractable and uh and saint gothard i'm not sure what they're doing with him

Speaker 2the thousand guineas is uh obviously that market's changed complexion a little bit um the thousand guineas as i look at the bet 365 market, Captain. And I'm just having a look at the futures race here. And you've got the South Australian filly that was the favourite, who's now been replaced in the Thousand Guineas. So Pretty Baby's $5. Regal Ambition, $4. Over the Bridge was impressive at $6.50. Global Goal at $7. So Regal Ambition, she looks like a filly that she looks pretty good after watching her on Saturday.
Speaker 19Yes, definitely. And, you know, and Under the Bridge was pretty good too. So I think there's four or five you could take into that race at this early stage.
Speaker 2Yeah. What do you make of the Turnbull States? Can Eliana defeat Sir Delius?
Speaker 19I think Eliana's just coming right at the right time, Gareth. And I think you're going to see her probably nearly at her best this weekend.
Speaker 2Should you be backing her then, if that's the case? Does she like the wet?
Speaker 19I don't think she has. I don't think she has any problems with the wet at all, Gareth.
Speaker 2No, that is exciting. Have you made up a decision who you like in a Caulfield or Melbourne Cup just yet, Guy?
Speaker 19Not yet. Not yet. But I listened to Adam Blanco this morning. He thinks a fair few of them have wasted an airline ticket on them.
Speaker 2Yes. A couple of steeplechases he basically pointed out. I thought that was a little bit harsh. I don't mind Spod Fry if he could get into a Melbourne Cup after winning a Geelong Cup, maybe.
Speaker 19Yeah, but the thing is, when you're actually over there, in Europe, Gareth, they do think they just turn up here with a satchel and they put all the money in and then they go back to race for carrots and bananas, you know? Yeah. But, I mean, you know, they come every year and they've won a few times, but they haven't actually knocked the lights right out, have they?
Speaker 2No, and it's a different world that we live in now because the handicap are caught up with that progressive three-year-old, whether they can get here and they have to carry weight these days. So there's not too many of them coming here. Most of those three, three-year-olds going to four, they find it difficult to pass the CT scans. Highway Man's not here. We thought he might be coming out, but they've decided to stay at home. The St. Ledger winner, Trust Your Instinct and James J. Braddock, they prick everybody's ears. So looking forward to seeing them come out in the second shipment. But our locals are going to be hard to beat, I reckon. Yeah, definitely. Saran, who's a former importer, is the favourite for the Caulfield Cup. I think everyone's waiting with bated breath, Guy, to see if your great mate, Christopher Waller, will start Eliana in a Melbourne Cup with 58 on her back.
Speaker 19Well, we had this discussion last week and I sort of thought that they probably wouldn't, but maybe if she happened to win this weekend and she happened to win a Cox Plate, they might line up with 58.
Speaker 2Yeah, it'll be difficult to knock back an opportunity in a way to not go to a Melbourne Cup. Melbourne Cup, even if she's got 58, if she wins the Cox Plate, because she'll get 60 next year if she wins the Cox Plate.
Speaker 19Yeah, well, obviously, you're talking through your pocket, Gareth. You've obviously got some sort of investment. No, I haven't backed her. Because you're very keen for her to run.
Speaker 2In fact, I don't want her to run because I backed a few others around her, to tell you the truth, Guy. So, well, from a racing perspective, of course, I want her to run, but I missed the price anyway. So it'll be interesting to see.

Speaker 2How about that, mate? You've had so many wonderful thrills on the racetrack, but that was some performance there by your colt.
Speaker 20Yeah, no, it's, look, that was, that's got to be the highlight of our racing lives, really. Really? I think. I think there's probably a few ingredients to that. You know, the disappointment we've had with War Wove and around the Magic Millions and sort of the two-year-old campaign, which was obviously exciting and had its highs with the Pago Pago and, you know, a great run in the slipper. But, look, I think it's just a vindication of, I think, where we thought the horse's ability was. I mean, I think, I can't, I can't say that any of us thought, you know, he was going to go and blow them away the way he did. But what I said in my sort of speech after in the winner's room was that, you know, I don't know that I've seen Bjorn as confident. He's normally pretty measured when it comes to the big races. He can get pretty confident sort of around a mid-weeker. But, you know, during the spring carnival, he sort of goes with a bit more into himself and he's a bit more reserved. with these with these. predictions and and i just could tell that he was confident um and i know rachel every time i spoke to rachel after the races you know she'd sort of give me a good feedback about where she thought the horse was and i think her anticipation was growing with every run so no uh it was a thrill it was a hell of a
Speaker 2thrill just tell us how tough that morning was on magic millions day this year
Speaker 20well it was tough yeah it was really tough because we were very confident um you know and and we were happy with the horse and obviously you know there was just a differing of opinion about you know the the horse's guide on the day and you know i know that racing queensland are very well intentioned so there's no malice there but um we just saw things differently and the horse was ready to go in our opinion and so we thought we were you know a very strong winning chance and and um and look it didn't work out but um we've we've got the i mean the alan frogley and and bjorn's team all did such a great job to be able to um to be able to give us the joy we had with him in his two-year-old campaign nonetheless um you know he ran an almost in the slipper and he won that pay-go-pay-go and just had a great campaign but bjorn always said look let's just look after the horse and he's going to have a three-year-old uh three-year-old campaign um and you know we think we can get to the get to the top of him and and he's pulled it off so yeah the disappointment is joyous
Speaker 2for sure have you had a call from the lindsays at cambridge stud yet
Speaker 20uh yeah i know that jim spoke into my bjorn spoken to him they're thrilled as they should be um you know it's such a shot in the arm for the new zealand breeding industry and you know the the lindsays i know have put an extraordinary amount into the industry over there and you know if you ever get the chance to go over and have a look at cambridge stud it's it's um it's like nothing i've ever really seen so uh they over the success they invest so much in it and sort of stayed is a really exciting stallion i see yet another um two-year-old philly trial extremely well just a day or two ago so uh hopefully hopefully more to come yeah so
Speaker 2like um how does this deal get done now obviously he's a stallion prospect um without giving too much away like can you take it inside and in a sanctum with your ownership group about how you go about getting the best possible deal because um when you have a look at back the last five years what a time you've had at ridgemont like from storm boy to paradoxium and and now to this cult yeah i
Speaker 20guess this one's a little bit different to storm boy and paradoxium in that um i suppose a lot of the uh value in storm boy and paradoxium's deals was sort of future upside um so a lot of the structure with those were kickers involving them going and reaching uh the heights that that potentially they'd put in their grand finals whereas uh war woven is different in that he's he's won his grand final really um you know the the golden rose is an extraordinary stallion making race and and so what he's done for us now is that he's he's won it convincingly i think we'd sort of be in a position i feel if he had just fallen in um and uh you know i suppose you know would would he have sort of obvious value i'm sure he would have but you know to have won the way he did against such an extraordinary field um i think we felt as though we and we feel as though he might be one out of the box um and so look obviously he's going to be an incredibly valuable um cult for for most studs but given he's he's won that grand final for us we sort of at the moment might just sit on our hands and and look there's no time really to do anything before caulfield guineas anyway so caulfield guineas will will will play out and and we'll see where we go from there um i think a horse of his profile is it's relatively unique in that you know you've got a pre-christmas uh precocious animal who looks the way he does um who won key slipper lead-up races and had a really you know significant chance of winning the grand final so i think he's going to be one of those horses i think he's going to have a really big two-year-old profile um the big consideration with those sort of horses is do they go on at three and do it and he he's improved into his three-year-old campaign and i think bjorn's view is that he's going to continue to improve so we'll ride that wave with with the ownership group and bjorn and and probably um see out this this preparation you know we'll i'm sure there'll be some meaningful
Speaker 2conversations about uh where we go to next i guess the big question now he had that big grand final in a call for your guineas and even maybe do you go on to a cox plate if you continue on your merry
Speaker 20way i i think i used the term grand final in in in um more more referring to his sort of commercial upside but as far as his racing grand final goes um you know bjorn has always been of the view that this horse while he's you know he's got a lot of experience he's got a lot of experience you know an electric sprinter he is going to be able to get a trip so yeah if you look at his pedigree that's certainly on the damn side that certainly rings true so um we're going to take it race by race you know we're going to uncharted waters every time we step up and trip but bjorn's view is going to keep getting better and better um so we'll just see how he goes in the core field he's really confident he's going to get a mile um 2 000 meters is you know another two furlong so that's again uncharted waters now the cox plate is is certainly uh the dream but uh we'll just take it one race at
Speaker 2a time um paradox seems bloody exciting as
Speaker 20well yeah he is he is i mean he he and um he and uh war woven have been sort of neck and neck they go on different paths paradox him certainly more of a um you know uh sharper six furlong type than than war woven but you know war woven is is a group winner over that distance too but i think paradoxium is is uh just a huge huge uh play in the cool more we're really really confident um and you know to see flemington down the straight the other day a few weeks ago where he's never he's never run down the straights um he was out by himself with no rail to follow and no horses around him so it's such an encouraging start um and probably an indication of of what you know we may see with a bit more fitness um in a few weeks time on derby day so i know bjorn and the stable again are really really confident see him um we'll see him in two weeks time and then three weeks into the into the cool more

Speaker 20few we've got a really exciting prop this year actually we've got um we bought the daughter of sunlight uh from coolmore which is great i mean she's not gonna be early but she's she's a great one to have in a future broodmare band we've got um got the sister to classic legend who's probably going to trial in the next couple weeks we've got um got nonny this weekend in there in the breeders plate um he's a big beautiful animal cult um his favorite this weekend so it's sort of it's hard to line those two-year-olds up in those breeders plates i don't really know um where they're all at there's a there's a few obvious types and a few interesting horses in that race so i wouldn't say that i go into the race you know uh knowing the form but i'm very confident in in in our uh bloke and beyond very confident and um so exciting weekend for him and animo is just a hell of a exciting stallion for the industry and hopefully he gets off to a good start well what a

Speaker 21was good on saturday um there was a saturday meeting in the five meter position i think on the 12th so two and a half weeks ago and it wasn't too bad i mean you would certainly want to be in the front third or front half of the field that was a plus but it wasn't a dynamite rail you could sit one off the fence and make a make your run so look certainly front half of the field but not too bad
Speaker 2all right then where do we start with your place
Speaker 21i'm going to start in race five this is an interesting race um i do think one of the three at the head of the market will win um and i've landed on number eight sabagram who has been a bit disappointing he he was backed off the map uh two starts ago in the up and coming and sort of settled off pace and ran on okay but never really looked like winning behind plagiarism then in the ming dynasty he was in the market again he was speed about 550 led in what didn't look like a hot pace and weakened he was obviously pretty disappointing there but they pressed on and stuck him in here up to 1800 he's by severville should get the lead on his own i think and i just yeah why would they do it is my question if there was anything wrong with him or if they didn't think he had the ability so i'm just taking some sort of lead from the stable putting him in this race i think it's used come up favorite he dominated at newcastle last start this is harder hallowed halls uh no luck at all or at farm last start uh but i don't think the market's missed that but it's certainly a chance but with a bit of a query number eight everything you hear
Speaker 2is that he's a good horse over graham and i think that we'll finally know if he is a good horse or not come tomorrow because he will get that set up that he should be able to lead and get the front surely over 1800. there's no excuses yeah yeah

Speaker 21got for us uh keen to bet in the last actually yeah lord remlap's been backed into equal privatism it it's one two highways in photos i i look at the time was pretty good last start but there's a no margin there amongst the place getters look highway form outside of highway races unless there's margins i don't like so keen to bet and i've found two at double figure odds actually number nine santana for team hawks uh didn't miss a place uh in any of its runs last solid four morgan victoria didn't mind its trial wasn't asked to do much i think there looks to be plenty of speed here and he'll sit off it and you can get around twelve thirteen dollars i think he's an easy bet to have as is number eleven duke of arrakis i think the key to him might be fresh he won uh back in june last year he won his maiden in pretty good time at kensington uh earlier this autumn the sort of just gone he was placed behind napoleonic and i hope he both group horses uh in his first up run there and he's first up uh again tomorrow look he typical waterhouse pot trial i thought he was you know asked to do a fair bit and kept going but that's just how they trial i think and you're getting what eighteen dollars i think he's uh another easy bet to have in this race uh in a race where i don't like uh the one very much uh metallic cat the other waterhouse runner is the chance that he's drawn a bit wide but those two roughies will do me nine and

Speaker 22good morning to you gareth good morning to everyone uh just the seven races at durban tomorrow eight meter rail and i'd say we'll get a few scratchings in the morning just the way these races pan out with some wide gates etc uh race one number one imminent appeal one for chris anderson and emily posman uh three off for emily will carry 57 of like both runs the debut at the sunny coast was good sitting wide and last time out behind metric in a sprint home he was never going to win but he kept finding the line the margin was just over two lengths but he was closing it all the way now that was 1200 tomorrow is 1350 he draws a lovely gate and the opposition don't look overly strong so that's his race i think race one number one imminent appeal and race three number four head hunter uh last start third in saturday grade in fact the last few of all been in saturday grade drops in weight here 55 kilos for ben thompson and rises to 1600 meters which will suit he has won over 1600 meters and that was here at durban and he too as i said he drops in grade drops in weight does not need a strong uh bunch of rivals at all so at this stage they are the two one number one and three number four but i'm sure i'll add to that tomorrow gary beautiful looking forward to

Speaker 23look i'm going to talk about a couple of races after i'll talk about the plays because it's a great card here at ballarat so we're going to start uh we're going to go into race number three and we're going to play horse number 11 full confidence here uh for the mcavoy team now this horse is around about five bucks i know it's drawn really badly but this horse went under the regal ambition and we've seen what regal ambition has been able to do uh come out and do and we've also seen what stipulation has been able to come out and do both subsequent winners out of that race now drawn bad that's fine we can back full confidence at five dollars and all we have to do is save the two head jet for ben millen and clint mcdonald if you want to but i'm backing full confidence straight out that regal ambition form is going to stand up anywhere same with the stipulation form so there's my first one race three number 11 full confidence we move to race number four on the card this is where we do back in ben millen and clint mcdonald with kingsbury this horse goes second up here after it probably did a little bit wrong there at geelong in a 62 where it was highly expect around 3.80 uh draws low melamine the saddle and i'll get to 60 kilos second up will improve and uh i think we'll be getting the job done close enough to one one of the better ones of the day race four number five kingsbury and then we go to race number five now there was a dollar seventy opener here for gay waterhouse and adrian bott this is my lay of the day uh and we've had a good run with that i'm actually going to pack the 11. jenny you think here for tony ottobre the mighty uh group two winning tony ottobre team for jenny you think jet stanley and kieran marr out of gate four this horse is ready to win i reckon um two goes at the journey uh for a win and a place hasn't been to ballarat before where it gets a little bit of room and uh i think the seven dollars is way over you nearly get even money to play so jenny you think will be the value play one thing i want to mention before i go g man is race number one is an absolute cracker between the ten semantics and the one arousal um those two horses are both in the mix can't wait to see uh arousal and what it does but um semantics we've all had to deal with them a few times but um it looks the one to be but there's a three-year-old race in race six which is just absolutely super um keep your eyes on it if you want to watch a race tomorrow or a form race going forward but you've got milana spirit inner gold high falls of shane jackson's a nice horse turbo saint for yulong and the mcdonald team handy for ethan brown and jason warren's a nice horse cavill avenue's ready to go it's an absolute belter of a field race six so i'll be watching on race six but that's going to be a very very good form race rolling forward out of ballarat now

So that means you had to buy a ticket there in New South Wales. And then you get drawn out. And if you're lucky enough, you get a slot in the COSY Osco. And then you've got to go out and choose your own galloper. And Nathan Palmer is lucky enough to have a share in Lord Renlap, who is trained at Scotty Singleton Stable there in country New South Wales. So he was eligible for the COSY. And he had no other choice but to go with his own horse. And he joins us down. Nathan, hello to you. Welcome to Giddy Up. Morning, Gareth. Tell us a little bit about how you got this slot in the COSY Osco. How many tickets did you buy?
Speaker 24We got a little group of us together. We bought a fair amount of ticket, but we sort of knew at the same time we needed lots of luck to go our way. The horse had had a good win three days before the slots were drawn. So we were quietly confident that he was going to get a slot. I was actually up at the trial. It was that day with Scott at Scone on the Wednesday morning, the morning that the slots got drawn. I'm not expecting to draw our own ticket, but I was there watching on my phone. I sort of was leaving Scott alone because he's watching his horses trial or whatnot. And watching the broadcast on my phone, and I just looked down, and I seen my suburb and just sort of froze and sort of everyone calling me. Everyone who had a piece of the slot calling me, is that us, is that us? I'm like, man, just hold your horses. It could be, it could not be. And it was about a half an hour sweat. And they ended up calling us and let us know we'd won one.
Speaker 2How exciting. So how many in the syndicate?
Speaker 24I think there's about six of us. Scott came in, a couple of the owners, and then a couple of my good mates. A couple of the owners pulled out and I ended up asking my mate, Benny. He's always just down to, for anything really. And I said, oh, do you want to buy in? And he's like, yeah, why not? And yeah, he's happy you did.
Speaker 2Beautiful. So like how many horses do you have made or how many horses are you in?
Speaker 24We got about eight horses with Scott. Yeah. We got Lord Remlap, who's a four-year-old. We've got a couple of three-year-olds and a couple of babies getting educated now. So, so yeah.
Speaker 2That's exciting. So how long have you been into racing? How'd you get involved in the game?
Speaker 24My whole life, really. Yeah, my whole life, really. My dad's always bred and sort of owned horses. And so, yeah, all my life I've been around the game. It's been good. It's good to play. I have a good horse, you know.
Speaker 2Yeah, exciting, mate. You sound pretty young. How old are you? No, I'm 30. Oh, that's still young these days. Yeah. And so where are you based?
Speaker 24Based out of Hawkesbury region in Sydney. Scott was training out there, and then when he moved out to Scone. Oh, you followed him. Yeah, we followed him. He's a good trainer, good bloke, so yeah.
Speaker 2And so, like, you're living the dream. Obviously, it's a big money race. Have you started to dream what you would do if you won a Kosciuszko?
Speaker 24Oh, mate, it takes up 99% of my day thinking about that race. He's going around tomorrow, so I'm thinking about that at the moment. There's a good chance tomorrow. But, yeah, we'll get past that and all goes well. He's had a faultless preparation. So, yeah, he's ticking all the boxes so far. So try not to get too excited, but at the same time, it's hard not to think about when you've got an opportunity like that.
Speaker 2Well, he's won a highway there the other day on the 27th of April. We saw him win another highway back on the 5th of September. That was when he was first up. Now, you go to midweek class there tomorrow. Obviously, it's another step up a little bit.
Speaker 24I heard Mark before saying that.
Speaker 2I didn't want you to hear, Mark. I thought, gee, hopefully. No, it's all right.
Speaker 24No, I understand. Like, you can only beat what's in front of you. But I think we should tell him to watch the replays instead of looking at the margins. Because if you look at the replay, it was five wide and last coming around the corner. He had to do it the hard way.
Speaker 2Yeah, and so you expect him to win?
Speaker 24Then tomorrow? He's a very good chance of winning tomorrow, yeah.
Speaker 2That's bloody exciting, mate. So, this will be his last run before the Cozzy.
Speaker 24Yeah, that's right. I was talking to Scott earlier. The third up into the Cozzy, two and a half weeks into the Cozzy, everything just falls into place. Faultless preparation. So, I'm sure the other owners wouldn't, but I wouldn't trade my horse for any other horse in the field.
Speaker 2This is what it's all about. This is why you get into the game. And you've taken the punt. You got a Cozzy ticket. And that's all you needed.
Speaker 24Hopefully all our luck's not used up. No. Hopefully there's a little bit more left.
Speaker 2Well, hopefully the other owners negotiated well with you anyway.
Speaker 24Well, I sort of made the deal like when I got the syndicate together, I sort of let everyone know what they were buying into. So I sort of said that when we got the syndicate together, I said if we're lucky enough to pull our own ticket, we'll just go 50-50 with the ownership group. Because between me and my old man, we're majority shareholders. Yeah. So it was an easy decision to make.
Speaker 2Hey, well done, mate. It's some story, Nate. Go and get them. It's going to be – this is what I love about the Kosciuszko. It provides you with stories like this. Yeah, it's awesome. And these country trailers.
Speaker 24There's so many horses, so many good stories already to come out of that race, from Front Page to Far Too Easy, It's Me. Plenty of them. And hopefully we add to that list in a couple of weeks.
Speaker 2Have you got a rider?
Speaker 24We do. Michaela, she's ridden from the first start. She puts plenty of work in. I think she normally goes into Scott once a week, but I think she's been going in far more often than that to this horse. So she's on tomorrow and she'll be on that day.
Speaker 2And that is great because there's so many other options, big names there that can put their hand up for Kosciuszko, but you're sticking with Michaela, which is terrific. Because it's understandable if you went for a big-name jock.
Speaker 24Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, it is. But just with the work that goes on behind the scenes, it's a no-brainer. No. You sort of appreciate it. Sensational. It's a no-brainer.

Speaker 6Yeah, pretty good. Just at the stage, you're doing the little bits and pieces, making sure the roses shoot and the marquees are up and everything's in place, mate. So just the last little bits and pieces before a big day Thursday.
Speaker 2How many people are you expecting there on Saturday?
Speaker 6Saturday. Saturday. We want to be ready. We want to be ready. About 8,000, mate. It's a nice number for the Kalgoorlie Cup. But who knows? I have noticed Kalgoorlie people don't like to buy pre-sale tickets and turn up. So you don't really know until the last, mate. That's for sure.
Speaker 2Yeah. And what's the build-up been like for the Golden Saddle?
Speaker 6It's been good, mate. We've had Peter Moody's been good. What a good talker he is. He's been hopping on a lot of podcasts and interviews and those types of things. There's a lot of time. A lot of talk around town, especially now a local trainer again, twice in a row, won the Golden Saddle raffle, Nev Newton. Okay. So he's all excited. But I think, yeah, it's just everyone's ready to go. It heaps of rain last week, mate. Now the sun's out. So it's happy days.
Speaker 2Yeah. And it should be a nice day there on Saturday.
Speaker 6Yeah, mate. It's about 65 mils in the past four days. Yeah. So now all that's gone. It's just the sun.
Speaker 2Yeah. And so the future. The field hasn't been completely finalized for the Golden Saddle. There's a few slot holders trying to work it all out, what horses they go with or not. But it's still going to be a pretty handy field for this million dollar race.
Speaker 6It is a handy field. We're pretty happy with the field considering the horses that we had to, we could get hold of really. And it's an even field as well. You know, there's a bunch of horses that could win. So there's not an out and out favorite, which is really good for the race. But as you said, yeah, I think I thought one horse was heading one way. One way this morning, I got told it might head another way. So there might be two people jostling for spots right at the last minute, which is exciting
Speaker 2as well. So Rissoles has got a slot. Man Crush, Luke and Peter Fernie combining there. Sensations, Spacewalk. Sherino's got a slot. Lord Shiva for Peter Moody teaming up there with Pete Moody. West Star, Simon Mill has done a deal with Sportsbet. And then Immortal Bliss representing Tab Touch. And one of the horses is going to be Peter Moody. I want to win it for Yarra Dale Stud. Barry Drawn. And there's so many good stories in this year's Kalgoorlie Cup as well.
Speaker 6The Kalgoorlie Cup. Yeah. Yeah. So we'll see. It's been a really good series because as you know, mate, this time of year, all the lead up Stania races are out here in Kalgoorlie. It's been a really good story with Helen Harding down there with just the sun. The crowd went nuts last meet when it won the Boulder Cup. So it's life. We have. It's like a head to head at the moment with the Peter's horses, but it's really exciting and it'll be really interesting to see what horses are in the cup.
Speaker 2Yeah, I think it was terrific. We had a chat to Helen Harding after the Jester's son got the job done there the other day. And obviously he's got to go up and trip to win a Kalgoorlie Cup. But that was her first listed victory. Traded Esperance. She's been a star of the Esperance training fraternity and it'd be terrific for her to go on with it. And win a Kalgoorlie Cup.
Speaker 6She's always here in Kalgoorlie. You can class her as a local as well. She supports the club huge. So hats off to her. She deserved all of that for sure.
Speaker 2And the Haddon's Handicap. I guess the Golden Saddle will take her, take away a few of the stars from a Haddon's Handicap, but the field looks okay.
Speaker 6It is a good field. It's probably the best field we've had in a while. This time last year, Gareth, the actual field sides for the Haddon's were actually quite low and quite concerning. But this year they've bounced straight up again. And it's big fields all the way across and in the hands we've got 14. I think there's only two local horses in it, to be honest, two Affernies. Other than that, they're all on the way from Perth.
Speaker 2Yeah. So Elite Missiles first up. Hobo West is very good on his day as well. So yeah, looking forward to that, mate. Well, we wish you the best of luck, Craig. We appreciate your time here. Jason Grimson. He joins us. G'day, Grimo. Good morning, fellas. Good to be on. The big question is, who drives Minos on Saturday night?
Speaker 30Well, I don't know. Can we rush your licence through, Gareth?
Speaker 2Yeah, I know. I'd love an opportunity to drive Minos because I'll be going straight at the front. Will, are you doing anything on Saturday night?
Speaker 29Yeah, I think I'll be driving here, Gareth, but I did lucky enough to drive him at the trials last week and whoever drives him will be in for a good ride.
Speaker 2Well, you think he's home, do you? What kind of feel did he give you?
Speaker 29Pretty good one. I'd say it'd be awfully hard to beat.
Speaker 2Hey, Patrick, have you got your licence? You could even win on Minos on Saturday, I reckon.
Speaker 28Yeah, I reckon Grimo's team's going good enough that I'd be able to do that for sure, G, but no, I'm not quite capable up to that class of driving, I don't think.
Speaker 2And so, was it a difficult decision to drive Swayze Jason over Minos?
Speaker 30Oh, well, I've only just seen the fields now, and I might have to jump off. I reckon Minos will be very hard to beat,
Speaker 2to where he is. Can you jump off? Are you allowed to jump off after you put down the drivers? I guess you can.
Speaker 30Yeah. Yeah, you can, yeah.
Speaker 2It's a bit harsh on Swayze's put you on the map, basically, to jump off him for Minos. Oh, I drove Minos all through the inners.
Speaker 30I love that little horse, and yeah, it's hard to jump off him, put it that way.
Speaker 27Yeah. Adam? Yeah, well, it's great to see them down here, Jason, and you just felt this was a good pathway to the Victoria Cup, and does this mean that Swayze will be in the Victoria Cup as well if he's down here this week?
Speaker 30I don't know. I'll put him in more just to give him a trip away. He's quite fat at the moment, and they do lose a little bit of weight with such a lot of travel down there and back, so he'd need to improve off his trials, but in saying that, last time I brought him up from a spell, he improved every start, so if he's going well enough, he could be in it, but we'll know more after this weekend.
Speaker 27Yeah, I was going to say that with the trials. He's a hard horse to assess at the trials, isn't he, because he really does his best on race day.
Speaker 30Yeah, for sure, and me just driving him last week, I drove him quite hard and we rolled along, but he felt like he was getting back to his best. I'd been quite disappointed before, but just having to sit behind him and driving him, I know. I know when Captain Smith just pulled out, he wanted to go with her. He's just not fit enough to do that yet, but he still felt like he had it.
Speaker 27And Minos looked to come on from the first trial a lot to the second trial as well.
Speaker 30Yeah, he definitely improved a lot, and he's quite a nice horse. I think he'll be in these big races for a couple of seasons. He's improved every time I've done something with him, and after a little spell, he's come back better.
Speaker 2How many in the Victoria Cup, Jason?
Speaker 30Really good question. I'll probably nominate five, whether they all get runs, but yeah, we'll see. They all got good enough form, I think.
Speaker 2Who are they? Dangerous, will he come?
Speaker 30Yeah, Dangerous will definitely come after he's won the other night. Yeah. Minos, maybe Swayze, Captain's Mistress, and if Jeff goes good this week, I think he might,
Speaker 2surprise you. There you go. So they all should get runs, Adam, shouldn't they?
Speaker 27Those horses. Yeah, you would think so. There doesn't look to be a, well, there's not a lot of depth amongst the Victorian horses at the moment, and we know that despite a bit of speculation that Leap to Fame won't be coming down, and the janitor obviously won't be coming down. So yeah, on their credentials, all those five you would think would get a run. So Jason, Captain's Mistress, great to have her back, and this is a, perfect race, isn't it, with the preff draw, meaning she had to get a great barrier.
Speaker 30Yeah, definitely. It wasn't planned for her to have a first start back like that, but it's worked out perfect. You know, it's two weeks before the Victoria Cup. She gets that preferential draw, and it's over 2,300, so it couldn't have worked out any better, and it'll be good to have her back at the track.
Speaker 2Can't wait to see what Kingman can do to you. He'd have to improve about 40 metres, I think. Well, you never know.
Speaker 27Is, yeah, how do you see the race being run? I mean, Jeff's got the great gate speed. She's drawn nicely. Would you, you know, would you expect that she'd want to go for the all-the-way win, or having a trail first up over the longer trip would be ideal?
Speaker 30Look, I don't think Cam will be too happy to hand up to anyone. He's never real keen to hand up to anybody. He's a stalemate, so I'm tipping he'll be wanting to go all the way.
Speaker 2So what's, my, hi, my name's, my name is Jeff then, so do you just, do you come out of the gate, or you just look after him at the start now?
Speaker 30Probably look after him. Yeah. He, I know we always use him off the gate, but he's just as good with a sit. I think we've only drove him with a sit two or three times, and he's won, what, all three, I think.
Speaker 27Yeah. And Jason, that, that was a, that was an incredible campaign up in Brisbane for the mayor. She's had a nice break. Will she only need this one run, you know, with, it was a nice break, but it wasn't, it wasn't a long one. She'll only need this one run, do you think, to be tip-top for the Vic Cup?
Speaker 30Yeah, 100%. She's really forward. She could have just had one trial and went to the races, but I sort of held her back, knowing this race was this week, and a two-week break to the Vic Cup. So it's all worked out perfect that way, and yeah, like, she could go into the Vic Cup the way she is now, I think.
Speaker 27Wow. And then beyond that, is it locked in stone? You'll go to New Zealand, and your bucket list race, the Koi,
Speaker 30Kora Cup? Yeah, look, she's booked on the plane. Minos is booked on with her to go with her. And yeah, that's the plan. We'll take that race first, and then we'll see how she pulls up, and she might have two or three more starts over there. It's quite hard. It's hard to bear weight. But yeah, I might have a few others that'll go over too, for other races.
Speaker 2So you'll set up a satellite stable in New Zealand?
Speaker 30Yeah. I've got a nice filly that I'll take over as well. Who's that? The Queen's Gambit.
Speaker 2Oh, the Queen's Gambit. There you go. Jumped out of the ground lately, the Queen's Gambit. So that's exciting. Will Rickson, will you get a drive in the Victoria Cup, or will you have to go to Wagga that night?
Speaker 27Hopefully, Gareth. Yeah.
Speaker 29Who do you want? This is your opportunity.
Speaker 27He's probably going to drive Max Delight if he comes down,
Speaker 2won't he? In the Vic Cup. Yeah, that's a good possibility. But he might get on one of Grimson's, you never know. That's good. Obviously, he's got five in. He can't drive them all. So yeah, you'll have to like, and it's going to be difficult for the drivers to choose, because there is a big meeting at Wagga, isn't there?
Speaker 29No, Menangal is the middle of the British Challenge Series. The two-year-old semifinals are on that night. So it makes it pretty tricky to make a decision when you're committed to these young horses. But yeah, if Max goes to the Vic Cup, I'll be there. I'll be going with him. I'm committed to Max. So he won really well the other day. If he goes good this week, I'd say he'll nearly go.
Speaker 2Yeah, it's difficult sometimes when you've got a Victoria Cup and the British Challenge on the same night, Adam.
Speaker 27It is, but the calendar is just so crowded at the start and the back end of the year now, isn't it? So yeah, look, it's not ideal, but finding a solution is difficult, isn't it? Because individual states need to protect their own big nights as well. Yeah. And that's right that Captain Smith's will probably spend the rest of this year after the Victoria Cup in New Zealand. So there won't be like a race like the Blacks are fake?
Speaker 30I'd say not. They're just the races they have over there. They've worked out perfect by the timing of them. She can race mares in a couple of the races and she races her own age in another. So we'll let her tell us while she's racing. But I'd say she'll be back. For the summer in Melbourne.
Speaker 2Okay. Why wouldn't you go to a New Zealand Cup with her, Jason?
Speaker 30Oh, there's like, you can cook a horse to earn it, I think. And she's only four and she's raced at the top all this year. So I think you can just go out a little bit too much with them, especially a mare. And it's not what we want for her. You know, we want her to have a good start of the year next year as well. So I think we just want to look after her more than anything.
Speaker 27I guess we're all trying to work out. when we We might get to see Captain's Mistress against Leap to Fame again. And maybe, would you go to a Hunter Cup? Or is that even too long a race for her? Would you be more Miracle Mile focused?
Speaker 30Well, it depends. You know, they've got them lead-up races and that. And you've got that big bonus. So if she won the Victoria Cup, she's eligible for it. So you'd probably have to see after the Victoria Cup. But I wouldn't be scared to take her on again. That's for sure.
Speaker 2All right, then. We've got to let you go, Jason. But have you got a winner for us today? Can you beat Lacasso?
Speaker 30I'm not racing Lacasso. But if I was, I probably would beat him.
Speaker 2Oh, yeah. I thought Jay Graham was Jay Grimson. I apologize for that, Classic Chip. How many winners have you got for us today, then?
Speaker 30Andretti definitely wins. And I got one in the first at Menango on Saturday. Yeah. It should be winning again.

Speaker 27Thank you. Well, Gareth, the opportunities are getting less with Jason driving himself in these big races, aren't they? Yeah. That's the thing. That's one seat filled.
Speaker 2He's stiff not to be in Adelaide this weekend representing New South Wales in the Australian Driving Championship. But, Paddy, what a stable he has, Jason Grimson. It's quite remarkable. He's sort of, he is the Chris Waller of thoroughbred racing in Sydney at the moment.
Speaker 28And he's doing a fantastic job, G. And he's just, he's got them evenly balanced at the top. You know, he picks his races and he doesn't overtax them too much. And, yeah, he just seems like he's ready for a great summer carnival.
Speaker 27Yeah. Well, four of those five, he said, are absolute locks for a Victoria Cup. And Hyman Amos-Jeff is the one that would probably have to earn his way in. Yeah. Good first up, but we'd want to see another big run this week, you'd think, for him to be able to press for a start in it. But, yeah, fascinating. With Captain's Mistress and the opportunities over there. So, she'll actually go to that race in Auckland that led to her joining Jason when she, Nathan Williamson, had that really awful fall at the end of last year. And then she moved to Australia after that. So, it'll be a full circle for her. But great to have her back. And it sounds like Minos from the draw, you think whoever drives him, and it sounds like it might be Jason, would be looking for the front and a great chance of getting the front from that draw. You see that?
Speaker 2Happening, Paddy? I don't know if you've seen the draw, but Bulletproof Boy 2, Jilly B. Nitro 4, Minos 5, and then Swayze 9.
Speaker 28Yeah, I think Minos will be in front if Bulletproof Boy gets to the pegs. I think they'd be happy to take a sit on him. But, yeah, he looked like he trailed terrific the other day. And, yeah, Jason's giving him a good push. So, can't see why he won't run a good race there on Saturday.
Speaker 27Yeah, and Will obviously drove him. Will, it was really noticeable how much he came on from the first trial to the second, wasn't it?
Speaker 29Yeah, he was pretty sharp, especially with how hard Jason's rolling along in front. And he also sits about four karts off the fence when he leads Jason. I should have asked him why he does that because I still haven't worked that out. But, no, he showed in Queensland. He's right up with him. And I'd imagine it'd be awfully hard to beat him in that race. And if Jason drives it, they'll be going hard if they don't. Let him go.
Speaker 2It's a big night for Kingman, I reckon. My horse, he's got to take on Captain's Mistress. But I think.
Speaker 27Well, he took no part first up. Yeah. And you can understand that, you know, probably a long break. But he didn't. There was nothing to be excited about from the run, was there? Like, you would like to have seen him really savaging the line better than that.
Speaker 2Well, he looked after him a little bit. But it's nearly D-Day for him, whether he goes to New Zealand or not. He probably can't go in that.
Speaker 27Well, it's the Victoria Cup first, isn't it? I mean, we're two weeks out from the Victoria Cup. He'd want to be running a booming race this week to be a genuine chance in the Victoria Cup.

Speaker 2winner, Gareth. What do you reckon, Will? Do you reckon he can bounce back Kingman? It's a good test against the champ in Captain's Mistress.
Speaker 29Probably agree with you. It'd be really interesting to see how he goes. It's just awkward racing that over the 2,300, Gareth, when that mare's drawn one. And it's like he might have to duck in early and then maybe come to the outsider for the last bit. So, you know, I think talking to Luke the other night, he said he's ready to. Like, he's had soft trials and a soft run and he's ready to run a good race, he thought. So, yeah, I think it'll be really interesting to see how he goes. But, you know, even if he runs a fair race, he's still going to go to the Cup, I reckon. So, what's a pass mark?
Speaker 27Second. There's enough depth in the race that I reckon. I reckon if he's got a sit park running, you know, running a solid third, it would be a serious pass mark, I think.
Speaker 2Yeah, he should be beating those horses, however, like Springfield Affair and Max. Like, Max, he's drawn 11, so Will's going to be a fair way off him, I would imagine. Take it easy there, Gareth.

Speaker 2No, I love Max Delight, but Kingman, if you. Like, you're not winning a Victoria Cup with Max Delight. So, if he wants to be. He's won one before. I know, but not in today's world. Even though he's been a great horse, Maxie. You're not winning a Victoria Cup.
Speaker 27Hey, Will, who are some stars in this New South Wales Breeders' Challenge series that we should be watching? You know, there's all the hype around La Caso, we know that, but who are some other stars in the series that we should be keeping an eye on over the next few weeks?
Speaker 29I'm pretty biased, but I got a lot of time for Arksea. She was really unlucky not to win the Queensland Oaks. She trialled super last week. She's in at Bathurst tomorrow night. And I think they're pretty keen to try and get in the Eureka as well. So, I think she's, you know, she's definitely my top seed as a drive. The Trio boys are pretty open. Alex Ashwood's horse at Wagga last week. Wastrous. Pretty impressive. Yeah. He's a pretty impressive looking horse. So, it's pretty strong depth around. So, it should be a good series. It's just a shame it does clash. It's a shame it does clash with the Victoria Cup Carnival.
Speaker 2Yeah. What about you, Paddy? Have you got a, have you worked out your Eureka horse yet?
Speaker 28Yeah, no, we're starting to get back going, G. And we've had a fair few inquiries, but you're just sort of working out which way we'll go. We're sort of, we're not going to jump on the Wharfie buzzer as quick as we need to and just sort of hold off a little bit, I reckon.
Speaker 2You've been a little bit quiet, really, haven't you, Paddy?
