Speaker 2to you troy causton's the president of the australian trainers association morning gareth morning calvin how's your fort going it's
Speaker 3unreal that's i'm very excited this morning yes why because my amazing wife is watching us on
Speaker 2for the first time ever well it's a bit disappointing to mrs causton's we've only been going on for four or five weeks and she is she is a wonderful woman as well to put up with me
Speaker 3um is she happy with the ford um she she likes likes driving it she doesn't like parking it that's okay yeah yeah she's okay
Speaker 2calvin mcavoy um obviously sponsored by ford as well hello to you the melbourne cup winning trainer and caulfield cup
Speaker 4winning my wife loves the f-150 she actually doesn't let me drive it demi she she doesn't
Speaker 2mind watching you on tv or is she doesn't like watching
Speaker 4us she turns it right off and she gets home from work and sees your face still on the tv is that because you watch
Speaker 3him so much yes she
Speaker 4does like you gareth but i think um i think it all becomes too much sometimes
Speaker 3that's what my demi
Speaker 4says isn't the
Speaker 3um isn't the winning you're in stuff fascinating for the melbourne cup oh geez i reckon it's given me a bit of a new interest to to follow it and just get a little bit of context and because i'm not massive on uh european form and stuff like that and the horse is coming down i just reckon this is it's just gives us that bit extra to to have a really good look at what's going into the cup
Speaker 2the melbourne cup to me is always my favorite race of the spring carnival like the cox plate's our greatest race and i thoroughly enjoyed that um but i love the melbourne cup because it means so much to so many different people and it's the race that is still our biggest race clearly in the country so i think it's a really good race and i think it's a really good race and i think it's a 100 regardless of what other people say yeah i
Speaker 3know anybody that thinks that they can argue that the melbourne cup is the biggest race in the country needs to have a good hard look at themselves because uh there's some other great races in the country but the melbourne cup is the one that changes people's lives oh richie
Speaker 2calendar in new south wales this is what he had to say the other day i don't know he's probably doing it deliberately so i read it out here on our show and i'm good on you richie and everyone has an opinion i love strong opinions we have strong opinions i'm about to play some of your opinions and i'm going to play some of your opinions that you were completely wrong about me um yeah both of you i'm looking forward to this so we've kept the receipts don't worry about that we keep the receipts when you get it right but this is what richie had to say in his race net column he says we are eight days away from the melbourne cup and i don't recognize the race anymore it's the melbourne cup a race i've loved for the best part of 50 years but it needs a reconnection or a shift in direction to sustain its importance for the next 50 years don't say no you will agree forget that i live in sydney we all know that the melbourne cup is our greatest race but it's on a downward spin in popularity and we need to turn that around australian racing needs all our major races to be successful all states flow off each other's success even through even though each state has had to fight their own piece of the punting dollars since victoria bombed the state's agreement on the wagering distribution and he goes on to say i've spent my life in racing i bet most days watch races every day and i read and write about the sport i love i'm passionate about australia racing as anyone you will find sydney racing yes he goes this is i'm not against innovation the everest and the quokka is proof of that they've been great successes even if some find it hard to accept they have created stars attracted huge crowds and given punters a fast exciting races featuring horses they know and follow um and i agree with richie with that last paragraph especially about the quokka but do you know what will be the biggest crowd of the year at ascot this year melbourne cup day yeah it'll be bigger it'll be bigger than the quokka and do you know when i was in sydney for the everest and i went for a walk around some of the um wonderful areas with some hubs yeah pubs and club and and um restaurants yes not clubs and you know what i reckon i saw about five or five or six i did write it down and they were advertising and promoting come to our melbourne cup luncheon in sydney yeah yeah so it'd be interesting
Speaker 4how long since richie's been he'd be an avid listener of the of the radio 100 scn giddy up he should tell everyone when was the last time he actually was at a melbourne cup because um be interesting
Speaker 3oh i actually i get what he's saying you enjoyed it last year of course i get what he's saying a little bit and i reckon maybe there's a little bit of a disconnect because there's not enough um australian horses going for it but that that's that's up to our um the breeders in in our country and and in new zealand we need to probably do something about that which is which is a much bigger issue than what you're talking about
Speaker 2it's more than that troy like um it could be a benchmark 58 it still be our biggest race it's the melbourne cup yeah it's the race that um say say um my fiance demi like her family i went there for a family lunch there on sunday now they don't know anything about racing and they only watch racing on one day of the year and that is melbourne cup day so they still um have their their bet on melbourne cup day they obviously watch the races but they only do it that day um that first tuesday november and that's why the melbourne cup will always be our biggest race and it's why it separates it from every other race yeah and not by and not by just a little bit it's the biggest race of the year by the length of the flemington straight and i would imagine you would understand that calvin after winning it yeah no for
Speaker 4sure it's i mean we're involved in racing and it always felt out of reach but um and you know it said it's it's the life-changing race and the big race but it really is and um it's very hard to explain the feeling but um you know it like people continue to tell me when i we have a bad week of the year just remember what happened last year and um yeah it's i want to get back there but um it's a good check by the length of the straight that far ahead of the
Speaker 2rest yeah and you can see it already like it's dominating the sporting landscape in this country especially here in california so it's a good thing that it's a good thing that it's a good thing that it's a good thing there the vrc do a great job with their breakfast with the stars um yeah and it'll be all over the the the news in the in the next week or so
Speaker 3amazing journalistic talent yes paulie sebastiani was best on ground by a million
Speaker 2miles how did you go there paulie did you enjoy yourself a lot of fun
Speaker 5mate a lot of fun good to see all the major players just front
Speaker 4and center in that um chris waller interview and he was he pushed the other journals out it's good he knows he knows the questions to ask no no
Speaker 5was asking questions gary no
Speaker 2i know sat there like stung mullets no and tj and all that he energy to live for him like there's some other journeys from the free-to-wear networks and um tj i i texted him i said like tj's question was sensational okay um sir delius he doesn't really like swimming like come on tj oh it was funny but yeah well done paulie um you were superb but it is the it's it's the special race for so many there's so many different factors um and obviously there's a lot of international flavor into this year's race as there always is but most of these horses are owned by australians really but they're trained by joseph o'brien so um it'll be interesting to see how it plays out regarding the top 24 because at the moment wath and racing or wath and racing they're one of the biggest players in world racing i reckon you'd probably go cool more could dolphin could dolphin cool more and then wath and i've reckoned third now you yeah they've made it you know they just
Speaker 4last couple of years and um yeah like it's uh george bowie who trains hopewell rock he's a good friend of mine and um i just talked to him this morning he's just landed in america for the breeders car he gets straight on a plane to um get to to melbourne so i hope his horse gets a run because is he nervous yeah i mean he's a long way to come not to get around one way to come but uh if it misses a run i'll take him out for dinner he'll be fine so what so the
Speaker 2scenario today is that if sulkum finishes top three um he's in the cup and even if the euphrates wins and sulkum finishes second the euphrates probably gets a half a kilo penalty but that is not enough for him to get into the melbourne cup so basically sulkum's in the top three he's in the cup and hopewell rock is out if sulkum misses the top three but the euphrates wins there's a good chance we might get a half a kilo penalty some years they haven't given a penalty to the bendigo cup winner but the euphrates is in horses like um king's valley who's backing up again he would need a two and a half kilo penalty yeah yeah and like i
Speaker 4mean credit to him that what a tough horse he is and he's been running unbelievably well but if he wins today it's a big ask to then get back up and go again next tuesday over two miles but no he won't he won't so you're saying he's going to try and win his way into the melbourne cup and then not run in the melbourne cup no no it's impossible for him
Speaker 2to get in yeah right yeah unless he wins by 20 links that won't happen no um so yeah that's it it's yeah so it's kind of and then the ct scans are done today or yesterday so the results for that second shipment for instance those internationals that arrived on the second shipment their results will come back today and then that's one of the
Speaker 4most nerve-wracking things yeah connections i mean i remember going through it last year like we've got a beautiful sound horse but the problem is you you know there can be something that's been on that horse forever mightn't be any issue at all but they may they might not be able to do it they might not be able to do it they might not be able to do it they may rule them out so delius well there you go it's a very nerve-wracking thing and um so how long does it take for the so you get the ct scan how long does it take for the result yeah so what they do is uh say it gets done on a monday morning um you should hopefully have the results by tuesday evening because it's sent to i think three different specialist surgeons over the world and it's a randomized they don't know what they're looking at independent and um that's how long it takes to kind of go to where it needs to go and then come back so i think it's generally like i mean we we sent half yours for one he was already booked in not wanting to continue and run but just to check he was okay and i think he went in on the monday and we got the results tuesday night okay
Speaker 2um so what happens for instance all right if you've got a melbourne cup hopeful that's in the market they get the ct scan and he doesn't pass it so you know today sometime but then you've got to tell your owners and you're thinking what do we do we go and scratch him straight away do we just leave it to said they not pay up um like it racing victoria can't do anything about it because it's up to the owners to make the decision who they tell i think the
Speaker 3owners the owners deserve to know first but the punters need to know straight away they can't be
Speaker 4taking bets on an all-in market but that's
Speaker 2i know but they shouldn't know but so um how do you think the policy should be then so if you don't say if half yours doesn't pass the ct scans yeah um and you've got your big group of owners that you need to tell so but i don't think there's too many
Speaker 3trainers out there that would try and hide that like you'd make sure that you tell your owners first because they're paying the bills and then you'd get out get it out as quick as you possibly could um to make sure that everybody knows that that that he's not going to be running the awkward
Speaker 4thing is gareth if the horse doesn't pass the ct scan and isn't allowed to run the melbourne cup it doesn't mean it can't go to sydney and run in a race up there so it's an order thing and then you're basically tarnishing that horse correct having a problem that it may not have yes so that's the dilemma the owners have got
Speaker 2the trainers go if they and and some of them might want to move on their horses one day anyway so
Speaker 4so if a horse fails the ct right yeah for the melbourne cup can it run in the champion stakes um no
Speaker 2i don't think they would are they ruled out
Speaker 4of victoria for the spring yeah but they yeah okay yeah but we should get some clarity yeah i don't know that's why sir deal is went
Speaker 2to the paddock i'm pretty sure he was allowed to race issue wasn't he
Speaker 4i actually think he was able to run and they in sydney he was able
Speaker 2to run i think he dominated for a race so maybe get paul bloodworth on the phone and ask him i'm pretty sure that i'm pretty sure that they can't um but the thing is is that if you've got a ct scan that doesn't you say you you fail the ct scan then they might go the owners go all right then don't tell anyone he's failed the ct scan we might say he just had a foot abscess and we're going to scratch him and then we might see if we can go to hong kong no one's doing that no no one's doing that but then they like sometimes other
Speaker 4jurisdictions might look at the ct scan i think what gay is saying is then the owners that have paid all this money for a horse they're not going to shoot themselves in the foot and but if they
Speaker 3if they don't if they're running in the melbourne cup and all of a sudden they go for their ct scan and they're not what does everybody think you know come on yeah i know but that's why the foot
Speaker 4abscesses do happen bad bloods happen temperatures happen i get that if that was the
Speaker 2case then the racing victoria would just announce that um yeah that horse didn't
Speaker 4pass the ct scan so should that be policy it gets announced straight away i reckon 100 by racing maybe the owners need to be consulted and say look when you're in the melbourne cup and you're going for the ct we need to um for the public and the punters once the results come out yes you'll get a phone call to the trainers it's posted uh on the website or something i think it's probably transparency especially because it's our
Speaker 2biggest race of the year and there's a lot of people punting on it um especially now in the futures markets and it's john hill pointed this out ages ago and he's had a lot of experience with these international horses he believes that he would go as far as saying that um have um something next to their name saying they have been passed i believe by the ct they have passed this ct scan so you can bet with confidence that that's not going to stop them getting into the race because there's a few out there that the ct scan might say that they're not ready to go into a melbourne cup but the trainers think that they're fit enough um so yeah and there's usually one or two each and every year and we haven't heard too many this year which has been a little bit different usually we get like
Speaker 4do you think though that's more so because um the owners that are buying these big expensive imports are getting a bit smarter they're getting them done
Speaker 3overseas yeah whereas before no point
Speaker 4bringing them over they're not going to pass that's what we used to do before it became this big thing you'd buy them and you'd only stumble across this when the rule came in but that's why
Speaker 2furious that year when a young broogle passed the scans obviously in europe but then came here and worked around that where i'd be track and then obviously something happened didn't pass the ct scans so it can't happen with these international horses so yeah i think there'd be i don't know if there'd be nervous connections there might be just waiting to see when they're not nervous you're not ready yeah speaking of nervous connections ct scans have come back here and then and then um that would be devastating if you got the call and said that your horse hasn't passed the ct scan so you're not taking your place in the melbourne cup what's
Speaker 4the feedback from willow on your horse james j braddock um gareth we'll talk
Speaker 2about that in fact we'll get a grab what will i had to say about whether he's been on the back of james j braddock straight after this this is the wednesday agenda troy cawson's carathal and calvin mcavoy with you join the conversation
Speaker 1text us on 0 4 9 7 3 6 7 3 6 live across australia this is giddy up with gareth
Speaker 2hall welcome back to giddy up merv says do the one dollar punters really care where the horses come from everyday punters maybe but on this one day of the year the once a year punters look for colors and omens not horses passports 100 right merv totally agree with you there hygiene agenda i'm in the general public every day the everest had some pool but everyone talks about the melbourne cup functions and race it literally is the only race my family know as they don't know or follow racing richard's obsessed with racing new south wales go to a cup meeting country new south wales no one goes go to one in victoria and it's huge that's from maca hey lads love the show i reckon the last few years the melbourne cup is going back we lost it to the internationals a few years ago and with horses like mr monaco chocolates and a few other local hopes getting trained by local trainers um it's starting to come back um where i thought it should be it's just it's not all about the internationals anymore. Can you start looking, at the melbourne cup horses from and you can start looking at the melbourne cup horses from early in the autumn that's from joel from toulon that's what you were saying a little bit yeah um and then and then like it then there's some argument is there too many when you're in races because there's i think it's seven or eight at the moment and you get a horse like hopewell rock who's got 54 and a half on his back and misses out on a melbourne cup start that's i can't remember that happening ever 54 and a half you'd be like you you think you're a little bit unlucky i mean you don't even get the hundred thousand dollars for rocking up and you can't because you're not an emergency because you there are there are no chances they take when they're coming out 100 um good day gentlemen how harsh is it on the international horses coming to australia they miss out on the start of the melbourne cup it's an expensive exercise for nothing yeah it's a choice if they're good enough they can win everybody does have a choice um yeah that that was interesting so you were talking about craig williams not jumping aboard james j braddock i didn't know that now in the lead up to the melbourne cup well we've got a grab have we this is what he had to say he was talking well paul sebastiani was the the leader of the the media scrum yesterday when craig williams was having a chat at flemington
Speaker 6i haven't been on him and i won't be on him until race day so he won't sit on him no no we spoke to joseph yesterday and he said uh he's got it under control and looks like i'll see him in the mounting yard on the first tuesday november i do what i do every time you know there's many horses i ride that it's part and parcel of the first time you ride them is on the race day so that's not unusual for us these days we can fly into different parts of the world and ride horses the first
Speaker 2time so that is interesting i found it interesting troy that the internationals or joseph o'brien i think he's got a philosophy why he doesn't like the jocks jumping on before race day i
Speaker 3had a high level meeting yesterday which i got some very very good information out of it and part of it was the reason for this that joseph doesn't allow um our jockeys to go out there is because it might have been last year or the year before one of the jockeys went out there and got the work completely wrong yes and stuffed it right up and he said no we'll just leave it to my guys they know exactly what i want and exactly what they're doing and i totally get that you've got people that have been riding the horse every day and our jockeys they're so professional it doesn't matter whether they've felt them i often get asked you know has you know if craig williams has craig ever ridden this horse before and i'm and i i explain it doesn't matter um we would never put craig williams on a horse if it required intricacies to know what was wrong with it you know we do get horses that certain jockeys that suit certain horses but uh as a general rule our track riders are pretty bloody good it was interesting because
Speaker 2they they tell me with the joseph o'brien how he trains his horses as they just gradually build up to to race day so they get faster after each scallop so they'll be going probably the fastest scalp they have on the saturday or the friday before the melbourne cup it's fascinating yeah so the monday before the melbourne yeah the monday so if the
Speaker 4jockey jumps on he doesn't know where they're at really and to be honest like um if if uh you know yeah they train so differently the way the way we train it and then our jockeys aren't used to that as well so i can totally see joseph he would have sent out one of his best riders and uh it'd be no different to um if um ray what's ray the jockey called ray dawson yeah um rampage ray if he wanted to come ride work uh i probably wouldn't put him on natural fling this morning in her final place at work before the cool more saturday so i think it's just what you know and uh i i get that for sure yeah
Speaker 2and mcdonald he said i'll go on right trust your instinct they said no you used to stay home we'll see you on tuesday um and so that's that's the way that they they do it i blame james mcdonald really because i i said to him you stuffed it up for all the local riders getting on these international horses loft was the horse i remember i still remember it like it's yesterday and we were working i think i just started giddy up was my first spring and mcdonald rode loft down that straight at flemington and he worked like a new market i think he went 11 and a half or something ridiculous and mcdonald reckons he couldn't hold him um but all of the track all the trainers at the track there that day said that is the best piece of work we've seen by any horse for quite some time we can't believe he's going in the melbourne cup aussie kerr was there and johnny o'neill was in the horse as well all these aren't these these horses aren't beatable in the melbourne cup he'd done a suspension the day after mcdonald broke him down he went too quick so yeah i blame mcdonald for not allowing anyone or the local jockeys getting on these international horses um and yeah so yeah it's going to be interesting to see how these internationals go because we just don't know how they're going in a way we know
Speaker 3how point of law is going
Speaker 2but
Speaker 3the best piece of information that i got from my i've got a werribee spy right and he's he's right in amongst the werribee horses and i said listen i'm going on giddy up tomorrow morning i said give me something give me a piece of information that i can tell the listeners about a horse that's out there that's absolutely flying that's going to go under the radar and it was james j brady oh there you go yes can you believe it yeah gareth's own yeah yeah yeah well there you go gareth to be what
Speaker 4price is it those sort of horses you just must be going yeah all these side gigs that you're doing like uh yeah that's what's affording you well
Speaker 2you told me once you get that feeling you've got to eat like it this is what you live for so i thought why not try and get it i
Speaker 4might be hanging off your coattails this year
Speaker 2100 yeah well you can come to the after party calvin since you didn't invite me to yours last year still paying it i didn't get invited and i still went really i never knew how
Speaker 4many friends i had until the
Speaker 2tuesday night we're going to talk about the cox plate straight after our next break but you boys talking about functions you've got one together tomorrow is that right yeah it's
Speaker 3going to be brilliant it's at the aduda gala hotel and myself and calvin which is probably the the lesser of the four people that will be there but hosted by nigel carmody yes also going to have mark zara and mark hunter okay yeah so what an absolute treasure trove as long as nigel
Speaker 2asks the tough questions
Speaker 3to mark hunter maybe you could brief him tomorrow i will brief him but whether he's got the you know to well you look brief man i'll ask hunter the question yeah you should i used to do
Speaker 4some of my best work at the duty gala when i was 18. so there's been a long time i think it's been done up a little bit maybe new yeah it's a massive refurbished to get in there it's the second best
Speaker 2pub in the northwest yes the stakes there are unbelievable we had a great function the giddy up function last friday it was packed um i'm still paying for it but yeah it'd be within walking
Speaker 4distance of my new house too gareth the ascot value would be the
Speaker 3first thing you've paid for
Speaker 2yeah yes yes yes i will he just bought a 3.2 million dollar house you just bought a 3.2 million yes on that note it's 28 minutes past eight we're going to take a break um they tell me calvin didn't like the cox plate at flemington he'll explain why next
Speaker 1join the conversation text us on oh four double nine seven three six seven three six live across australia this is giddy up with gareth hall i'm gonna
Speaker 2clarify um one piece of important information sean kelly's let me know if a horse is withdrawn this week by the order of the stewards owing to veterinary protocols we will announce that after the owners are notified i think that's what i said you did say that yeah so i thought that the owners had um depending on i must have um you're making things up no no i must have misheard the person i was talking to but i thought that the owners have the right to tell everyone if they didn't pass the seat to see sean kelly
Speaker 4listening yes powerful listeners of this show
Speaker 2yes he's a good man sean kelly um the cox plate calvin i had a great day i
Speaker 4actually had a great day gareth because i didn't have a lot of runners and i had a couple of uh mid-strength beers on the hill which i enjoyed but the only thing i'll say is it it's certainly um and and this is expected it didn't feel full although they had no it wasn't it was 35 000. i know but hold on a second which is 10 000 more than what they'd get the valley being full yep but because it's a different setup and a different amphitheater it didn't feel full to me um i still did a great job and you know i think it was well done by the vrc of course and andy and mooney valley for getting it all organized but um it just didn't feel like the traditional yeah of course that's
Speaker 3just my opinion mate mate did we did we opportunity lost like the cox plate's probably never ever going to be run at flemington again um you know and i thought i i went in with a massive expectation thinking that we were going to get 60 000. and i just thought i mean like everybody's going to want to go there and maybe it just fell a little bit flat because of that but it was still i still had a great day i i thought it was ripping and most importantly um turnover was up so 16 you tell me which is enormous
Speaker 2that is a massive result yeah and that just proves that's flemington is the home of racing in this country and the punters love to bet what was that what was that what
Speaker 4was the start you just said 16
Speaker 2yeah yeah and in fairness
Speaker 3to the valley uh field sizes were up from 11 uh to 11 from 8.9 which that that has there one less race because they didn't have the two-year-old race yeah so there's a less yeah nine races they didn't have the two-year race last year i think they normally had 10 10 races yeah i think they do no because they usually have the night before and it was condensed to one okay there you go
Speaker 2um but it was a it was a terrific day like the the race was superb um but you're right 35 000 at flemington felt like 5 000 at mooning valley and i talked to a few of the jockeys when they went out onto the track they said it just lacked that like they had the legendary sign and it just like that i'm sure it felt pretty good to
Speaker 4the connections i'm pretty sure bob peters loved it. Yeah, that was good to see him
Speaker 2emotional. Well, Uncle Bob said, Gareth, your Wednesday agenda team, they showed me no respect whatsoever. And I said, you're right, Uncle Bob. And this is what Troy Causton's and Calvin McAvoy had to say on this show. In fact, I didn't get the I didn't get your comment when you said he's got none, Troy, but this is what you had to say, along with Calvin last week. I won't recall this at all. The toughest challenge. Andrew Illegal Joe Pride backing up Charles Wolfe after a grand final in the King Charles and then traveling to Melbourne to compete in a cock plate or Cosmic Crusader to run again and back up after a core fuel cup.
Speaker 3Andrea, in my opinion, it's kind of, it's an afterthought really, isn't it? Well, I think
Speaker 2I don't know if it is an afterthought.
Speaker 4It could be. I think I'd rather be in Charles Wolfe's corner. I think the way Chad looked after him a bit late, there was obviously spoken about, they thought about it. He ran very well.
Speaker 2But traveling to Sydney, how much will that take out of us? Travelling to Melbourne?
Speaker 4Yeah, travelling to Melbourne.
Speaker 3Six-year-old Gowdy, if it was a three-year-old filly or something like that.
Speaker 4He'll have to do no work, whereas Cosmic Crusader's going to be seventh up and he ran well, but yeah, I'll take
Speaker 2Charles Wolfe. All right, then. It's going to be a great race. Can't wait. Sorry, Uncle Bob. It was a bloody good afterthought, I can tell you that. It was an afterthought for the Caulfield Cup, but it wasn't an afterthought for the Cox play, if you know what I mean. What a tough horse.
Speaker 4Credit to him. Well done, Bob and the team and Willie and yeah.
Speaker 3So did he not stay for the Caulfield Cup? Is that our opinion?
Speaker 2No, I think the key to that horse is not using him up at the start. I don't think you can use him up at the start. I'm just trying to get a positive out of all my negatives.
Speaker 4I'd love to see him back up again in the Champions States and he will and he'll probably be winning there as well, especially if the rain
Speaker 3comes. Yeah, that is an afterthought.
Speaker 4Yeah. I'm too scared to knock him out.
Speaker 2I'm not knocking him. I don't think it is an afterthought. I reckon Bob would have worked this out in his head at the start of his preparation. Obviously, Andrew Leak's done a great job to keep him up and to keep him motivated. Does Bob listen
Speaker 4to the Wednesday Agenda? He would, wouldn't he? I think he does, yes. On the podcast.
Speaker 2Liam definitely does. He's grandson. So this horse, so he goes to the Caulfield Cup. I think the key to him and talking to William Pike about him is that he just can't do any work at the start. So the Underwood, he rode him too close and Birdman went straight past him. Caulfield Cup, he rode him too well. He had to go forward and take that punt from that gate but he did too much work to get to where he needed to get to and then he just didn't finish off. On Saturday, he just said, well, I'm just going to ride him out. I think he will, I think he's I think he's ridden best. It was an outstanding ride. And he was last. It was a brave ride but he knew his horse and away he went. Now, he goes to a champion stakes now. He will go to a champion stakes. He's pulled up well. So that's a lock. He should be favourite for that race. And then he's going on that plane, the charter plane back to Perth and he'll run in the pinnacles where he'll be trained by Michael Grantham. Yeah, that's good. That is unbelievable really, isn't it? Good on him.
Speaker 4Yeah. And I think Bob knows the horse so well that, you know, the preparation he had in Perth before coming to Melbourne, he ran five times in six weeks or something, didn't he? Yes. He had a busy time and he performed so well. So, you know, Bob, Bob would have been laughing at us all. No doubt when we were knocking the horse.
Speaker 3In more serious matters, what did we think of the entertainment?
Speaker 2There was a problem with the stage. Did you say that? Where they couldn't parade really in the mounting yard?
Speaker 3That was a bit annoying. But I just thought the Johnny Farnham, I'm not sure what they were trying to do there. You think they missed the mark? Yeah, they missed the mark completely. I'm not sure. I'm no genius. You know, I'm not the expert when it comes to that, but it just missed the mark, I thought.
Speaker 2Yeah, I didn't really take much. Yeah, I didn't take enough notice of that. I think I was at the bar. The entertainment. Yeah.
Speaker 3Lining up. He wouldn't have been lining up because it wasn't hard to get a drink on Saturday. What did you
Speaker 2do with Sir Dillies? Can he bounce back in a champion stakes or is he done?
Speaker 4No. Look, I've been really in his corner, that horse. He's not trying. Yeah, maybe he's not trying. I thought they'd done a good job with him getting him and that was his real opportunity to peak and I was disappointed in his run. I don't know. Is he running as well? He'll probably run. Talk us through Adrian Bott's interview after the late.
Speaker 3I don't like the pile up on Adrian. I think it was a.
Speaker 2From a trainer's perspective, was he with Richo, the great Richo or was he with. I don't know, but. I think it was with Richo. Yeah, Richo. And it was great for him to talk to the media and obviously he's got a relationship with Jase that he's confident that he can have a chat to him after getting beat. I like to see like I'd nearly prefer to listen to the beaten trainers than the winning trainers. Yeah, and I
Speaker 3think that's imperative. I reckon that's a really good thing that we do interview the beaten trainers afterwards because there's a lot of people that backed Sir Dillies and wanted to know what happened. I think it was an off-the-cuff sort of comment that of course if he could take it back, he wouldn't have said it again. Maybe what he meant was he's an older bull, so he's a stallion and maybe he just needed that bit more extra work and he thinks that there is more improvement to come. I hope that's the case because I get it. Like if everybody out there punting on Sir Dillies wanted him right and ready to go for the Cox Plate, but maybe Adrian just thinks that that'll top him right off for the
Speaker 2champion. I think that's common sense, Troy. I think I know what we, I think we all know what he was trying to say, Adrian. He probably didn't word it great because, um, Gay's never won a Cox Plate. I think we all know that this horse, this was prepared to be at his best on Cox Plate, 100%. It's not like I'm going to leave him a run short, so he leaves something up the locker for the champion stakes.
Speaker 3I think it was really taken out of context, but there's a lot of people piled
Speaker 4on him. And who knows, maybe he walked back in the yard after the race. This is what we don't know. And he had a bigger blow than Adrian expected. Maybe he was having a puff and that's, that was just a comment that he said and thought, you know, things you don't know until you get,
Speaker 2you get to the race. And then they would probably sit around a table then when they're analysing Sir Delius and go, well, we stuffed that up, haven't we? Really? If he's blowing after the race and he wasn't at his best. Yeah, but that's me guessing.
Speaker 4I don't know if
Speaker 3that's what's happened or not. And the other thing, a horse can have a really hard puff if there's something not quite right as well. So there's, there's lots of different
Speaker 2things. And it must be difficult training a bull that's been to a few wars and gone through a few pain barriers. Like he did in that course. In that Queen Elizabeth, and he's been a mighty horse and they've done a wonderful job with him, but those big bulls, he might just like.
Speaker 3That might be it. He might have had a nose.
Speaker 2You know what, I don't know if he wanted to do it anymore. He may be looking after himself and look,
Speaker 4gelding's do that, mares, it's not just bulls that can do it. If they, if they. They go off, they go off. If they, if they go, I remember Sunlight. This is, you know, she was just got to, I think it was a five-year-old career or, and she just had a switch that flicked and that was her. She had two runs in Adelaide in the Sanctuary and the Moyer. There are two career-worst runs and we retired her. She just, she, that was her done.
Speaker 2Boys, will the young crowds that have been getting to the Flemington Carnival the last few years be able to afford the increased prices of Carlton Draft stubby? Plus have a bet. $15 a stubby is crazy. It's, I don't know how much it is for about $12 for a pint these days. I thought they, I thought they worked on that and got it down a little bit. No, not for the Carnival. Okay. Um, morning Wednesday agenda. Um, Geoff from New South Wales here. I have one question for all of you with regards to the Melbourne Cup. Melbourne Cup day and the on-course crowd. That question is what percentage of the crowd go and support the horses? Owners excluded, of course, from observation appears and is fed to us by the TV media that it's about the celebrities and parties such as the Marquise, et cetera. And a follow-up is how many tab windows and bookies are on course for the Cup these days? It seems racing is secondary now to the party event of the year. I disagree with that.
Speaker 3Um, yeah. I reckon a lot of people that you see go to the Melbourne Cup still look at the horses, bet on the horses. And when you, if you're watching it on television, they do show all the birdcage and everything like that, but that's a part of it. That's, that's part of the party. And I disagree with that.
Speaker 2The Melbourne Cup is an event.
Speaker 3Go and watch, go, go and have a look at the 80,000 people that are out in the GA, they're, they're enjoying themselves and looking at the horses.
Speaker 4I think from our point of view and Troy, like, you know, when we're there working and carrying a saddle out and, and sort of closer to the horses, there's a lot of people like, um, you know, there is a lot of people out looking at the horse and the types, the good horses and around the manor yard. And, and, you know, maybe. Maybe they're just showcasing that because
Speaker 2it's a big part of it. And the Melbourne Cup crowd is different. It's the Melbourne Cup people, as I said, come to the races, um, and they come for, um, the one time in the year and they come for the Melbourne
Speaker 3Cup. Good. And I hope that they tweet and I hope that they get on social media and tell everybody that they had a fantastic time.
Speaker 2I was blown away with the people outside of Melbourne that rock up to the Melbourne Cup as well. So it's truly, um, one of our greatest events. It's like the Australian Open, um, AFL grand final. It's an iconic, um, day in, um, Australian sport. It does a hell of a lot for the Victorian economy.
Speaker 4Was there any other disappointments out of the Cox Plate, Gareth? You backed light infantry, man.
Speaker 2Yeah, he went, it was, do you know, that was the perfect situation where you just kick yourself and you didn't read the race as well as you should. Those three year olds, Mark Hunter was all over this, those three year olds were always going to jump and those, those old stays would have to be at their top to get past them early doors. And that's what's happened there and they just blown up, like they got beat a long way and they haven't had the time. Like it's a bit like the pride of Jenny factor and you see it with her and you saw in the Cox Plate. As soon as she has to go into fourth gear after 150 meters, she can't go back. So it's, she's on, she's going straight to the fifth gear and she's, um, it's too early to get there. Like land legend wins when he walks to the front and then puts the foot down. That's why 12 was a bad barrier.
Speaker 4Correct. Yeah. Bad barrier. Well, I think it didn't matter what barrier. Didn't we argue about this last week? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker 3Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker 4I wonder if that was Kieran pushing or Bon. Um, probably Kieran.
Speaker 3All right. I don't think Bond's going to worry too much about it.
Speaker 2If I had the money Bond had and I had $200,000 spare, I'd go on a Cox Play. Yeah, 100% you would have. Every day of the week. 44 minutes past date, plenty of text messages coming through. I'll get to them in just a moment. This is Giddy Up on the Wednesday Agenda.
Speaker 1Join the conversation. Text us on 0499 736 736. Live across Australia. This is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 2Welcome back to Giddy Up. All thanks to Bet365. This is the Wednesday Agenda. Troy Coulson's Calvin McEvoy, Gareth Hall with you. Hey, G, everyone loves sticking the boots into Werribee every year. I somehow didn't hear anyone saying anything when the internationals ran 1-2-3 in the Geelong Cup. Time we started giving Paul Downs, the Werribee track manager, some praise for the condition he presents his track in every year. You praise Liam O'Keefe. Time to praise Paul Downs. That's from Murph. Good on you, Paul. Great job. I'll praise you if James A. Braddock wins the Melbourne Cup. If a horse is pulled out due to the scans, all bets should be refunded. You're betting on something that never had a chance to win, and these scans are different to every other race. I can see where you're coming from, Zach, but that's why it's called futures betting. That's the risk that you take, and we understand the risk these days with the CT scans. Do people care that the Australian Tennis or F1 are always won by internationals? No. If not for the international horses, the Cup would be a listed race at best. That's from Alex. I think the internationals do add a lot to the race. The big problem with the vet protocols is pre-post betting every year. There are European horses in the market with no chance of ever getting on the plane because they failed the pre-quarantine vet checks the previous year, and it is kept confidential. One thing I would love to see on Melbourne Cup day is the highway slash country final type race. How good having all the owners of country horses and their owners at Flemington race before the Cup. I agree with that, but I was talking to Travis Noonan about this. They've got to change those protocols a little bit regarding, I think it's like, if you don't train 15 metropolitan winners, then you're eligible for the country series. Yeah. That's wrong.
Speaker 3Yeah. It probably needs to be looked at. There's some good trainers. It's not perfect.
Speaker 2No. It's far from perfect. So trainers are eligible for that race, the trainers who train in country areas, and I include Warrnambool, but just, but Ballarat doesn't count because I can't, I count that as a provincial training facility like Cranbourne. Pakenham. Pakenham. So trainers who train from that set up, I don't think should be eligible for that country series. That's just me. People will disagree with it, but it's going to be dominated by city trainers,
Speaker 3basically. It is, but they are city trainers that had less than 15 winners. So that's, that's, you know, put on another race for them, like a midway.
Speaker 2You agree, Kelvin?
Speaker 4Um, yeah. You haven't thought about it,
Speaker 2Kelvin? Uh, no, I agree with you totally, Gareth. Yes. Yes. What about the Victoria Derby? It's worth $3 million. So that's made you decide to start your filly in that race. Has that been announced yet? Probably not. Oh, this is exclusive.
Speaker 4So can you win? Well, the last runner, last filly to run in a Derby was in 1990. Yeah. Uh, the last place skater was 1985 and the last winner was in 1923, but, but our filly has beaten the Colts, already. Um, she ran quicker time, uh, in the ethereal than the Caulfield classic on the same day. And obviously, you know, the VRC putting the money up to $3 million compared to the 1 million has been a reason why we've elected to switch. Uh, the fillies probably, in my opinion, looks a bit stronger this year with those couple coming down from Sydney. Um, so just a little bit left field, but you know, it often is a wakeful into the Oaks. Why can't we go Derby and then maybe back up in the Oaks? So you will back up? I'm not sure if we will, we will consider it.
Speaker 2Okay. Um, I love what he's thinking. I would do the exact same thing. I was just, it was an easy sell to Mr.
Speaker 4Zhang. Um, yeah, uh, look, they have another, they have another runner in the Derby, uh, true tone with, with Wallace. So that was the, the risk was whether they wanted to run a affiliate against their other runner. Um, but Danny Ralston, who's the racing manager, had a good conversation. We put the case forward and, um, they came back and we're happy to happy to support it. We still don't know how good this Philly is. Well, she's very hard to get a guide on Gareth. She doesn't do much at home and every time she's been to the races, other than when she won, um, her synthetic maiden, we've probably been not that confident and I will give Tony, my old man, a pat on the back. She won a synthetic maiden. And he mentioned Oaks in the, um, post-race interview and I gave him a spray about it. And I said, just you just open yourself up and you say things like that. And sure enough, she's, um, look, she's going to be running the, how do you ride her or she goes forward on the back of school or someone like that. She goes forward and she just needs to draw a nice barrier. Jaya knows her well, and, um, she's very fit. Um, look, I'm hoping it's the right decision that we've made.
Speaker 2I'd say it's a interesting Darby. And it is what it is these days with our staying prospects,
Speaker 3credit, credit to RV and the VRC for coming up and trying something different. And it's worked because all of a sudden there's going to be at least one Philly. I've, I haven't had a look at any other Phillies accepting.
Speaker 4I don't believe so. I mean, it hasn't been the last runner was 1990 Troy.
Speaker 3Yeah. So it's worked. So what they have done that they've tried something a little bit different. Um, if it improves the quality of the race,
Speaker 4fantastic. Two kilos is significant over, over 20, 2,500 meters. You look at the Melbourne cup. I mean, we want to South, I know it's different, but we want a South Australian Darby with Coco's son being a Philly. Um, a couple of seasons ago, she, she was unlucky in the Oaks and backed up and won the Darby. So, um, you know, there's we're keen to try it. She's nice Philly.
Speaker 2It's a good little race as well, because we're seeing most of these horses compete in the lead up races. And then you've got this, the different form lines. So the champion stakes, um, form, which is, um, the favorite stormy Marco who was fourth. And then you have the, um, Jonathan Mons owned horse. Call me air. Um, that was third in that race. So stormy Marco is the favorite. It's a good battle between the Sydney and three. Three-year-old and the, and the Victorian three-year-olds. And I don't think anyone really has a clue here because.
Speaker 4Well, they're all on trial.
Speaker 3I'm on trial. Just over half an hour to go. There's only 14 accepted. So far, Kira Kira Mars haven't been in the Darby.
Speaker 4There's 19 accepted. So if I can refresh my refresh, um, is refused to curtsy of Philly, Thomas Carver. Yes, it is. Okay. He's accepted. Yeah. Yeah. Um, I think that, yeah, so there's two Phillies accepted and, and look, Danny O'Brien's horse was very, very impressive on Saturday, but I don't know if it'll stay. Yeah. Well, Blake Shin mentioned that it felt in his post race interview. He said, feels like a 16, 1800 meter horse, but Danny O'Brien certainly knows how to win a Darby. And, um, yeah, those couple need to come down from Sydney, which is never easy. No, but, um, anyway, I like to run a hierarchy. I thought I thought
Speaker 2hierarchy ran really well. I agree. I've identified hierarchy. We got that on record when I identified it at 50 to one,
Speaker 4Sam Friedman, very confident.
Speaker 3Trouble is trouble is hierarchies. Currently sitting at 16th. So he's just in the field.
Speaker 2If a Philly gets in front of him and I do my money. Cause of you, Calvin, I'll be right. But both Phillies are in, in front of him at the moment. What are you doing? Lee Jordan? Like you gotta let the Colts and before the Phillies, they can run the Oaks. Anyway, I've got to take a break. We'll come back with plenty more straight after this.
Speaker 1Text us on 0 4, double nine 7, 3, 6, 7, 3, 6, live across Australia.
Speaker 2Please bring back the 2,500 meter race on Darby day. Make it the last qualifying race before the cup. I don't know why. Well, not many. Like, I don't think it works. Does it anymore? Does it might work this year? Yeah. You would, you would have thought they'd have a couple of nice choice. I mean, King's King's Valley would have went around. So we went, been to go cup into the last, race yes. I'll come. Good morning, Gary. Surely these scans regarding overseas horses has to be sorted before the. Pay a fortune to get here. Why not get someone from here to go over and do the scans before they come? They do from Bob. They do. So they're going to do them twice. The international horses because they work in between.
Speaker 3So they get scanned over there. They come over here, they do their work and then they need to get scanned.
Speaker 2And the biggest problem that they've had is that obviously they've got different surfaces over there in Ireland or England where they work at new market or belly Doyle or Joseph O'Brien. It's facility. And then they come to a completely different surface at Werribee or they have a race on a hard track at Caulfield and it can just change change. So that's why they have to do them here as well. Love everything you do. Calvin and Troy. I was listening to Richie Callender on another station the other day and he was saying the handicap always gives bending a cup winner the penalty they require to make the Melbourne Cup field thoughts. Um, I don't think that will be the case. He can't give, he can't give the Benny a cup winner three kilos. I G can you ask Calvin what the plans are with the expensive taste out of the Geelong classic held up at a critical stage.
Speaker 4We're going to probably try and get her into the Oaks, I think. Um, yeah, she was held up. I'm not sure. Yeah, it's a bit of a throw at the stumps, but we've done all the work to get her out to that trip.
Speaker 2So we're going to take a break on the other side of it. We're going to talk about this cool more. What a race. This promises to be if the rain comes the next episode. Well, it's all over, isn't it? Calvin, if it doesn't look out, Calvin says, This is Giddy Up.
Speaker 1join the conversation text us on 0 4 9 7 3 6 7 3 6 live across australia this is giddy up with gareth hall welcome back to giddy up all
Speaker 2thanks to bet365 it's never ordinary when it's brought to you by bet365 for free and confidential support visit gamblinghelponline.org.au tickets are just $25 at ticket tech for the peninsular cup at the mornington race course this sunday november 1st and keep on sending your text messages in on the garrison hound text line 0 4 9 7 3 6 7 3 6 and um the boys have got a gig there tomorrow afternoon at your favorite pub troy the duda gala it's a great name it's right next to flemington isn't it yes it is it's on
Speaker 3racecourse road in kensington i think it's good
Speaker 4fun we'll get into troy we'll give him a bit of abuse we'll get into zara
Speaker 2i think you've got to ring the pub for tickets or go to their website um it's a little cheaper than the giddy up luncheon so maybe the talent's not as good oh well yeah you probably did have j mac mind you the feed's pretty good at the
Speaker 3avh as well i gotta say that the good friend good friends are racing at the one
Speaker 2of the great pubs now we
Speaker 3don't
Speaker 2discriminate here who wins the the derby then i i've got i'm playing two horses well we've played two horses here on giddy up stormy marco and skua i think the horse to beat is hierarchy yeah i'm the same
Speaker 3i'm going with hierarchy yeah
Speaker 2we're on hierarchy if it gets a run yeah we're on it's still 16th you'll get a run sure yeah yeah um someone asked how
Speaker 3we're looking at the fields it's it's a thing that we have in victoria called progressive acceptances yes and if you have had a horse in the race you can log into your system
Speaker 4and see it's a trainer's portal i don't know how gareth gets on there i don't know how he's got
Speaker 2you should i can't reveal my sources i just get them sent to me um a lot of trainers are so like it but you guys know um quicker than anyone really you
Speaker 3see they um they're bringing it in in queensland so they're having it but i think they they are not allowing it in new south wales which i found really interesting kira mar and
Speaker 4chris waller are the only two trains that don't put the jockeys down so um the next episode mark zara's name's not next to it but i mean i'm sure there was um do you think they should put the
Speaker 3jockeys down no it's up to them that's their prerogative i don't think they should put the i'd say that uh both of them sit back and they see barriers do they well yeah exactly so they'd have their jockeys booked and they'd know who they've got and probably tentatively it only
Speaker 4really matters for if you've got multiple runners i mean we've when you've got one runner and one jockey booked it doesn't really
Speaker 2matter yeah is it difficult runners but obviously so i think chris waller would book four or five jockeys and i don't even know if he tells them what horse
Speaker 4they're riding i don't think he does and and um that's the power chris waller's got they're all you know lucky to be riding for him and those good horses so i think i think he's got a lot of uh good on him yeah doesn't really work for me but doesn't work for any of us he probably does that because
Speaker 2in case calvin mcavoy rings and says well you should be riding this horse and then they go well i'm riding one of waller's but i don't know what which one i'm
Speaker 4riding i think is i think look if there's a couple there's not a lot between and the barriers come out and one draws barrier four and one draws barrier 15 j mac probably if it was a flip of the coin um for which one wanted him to be on he would probably pick the one on the in the good
Speaker 2barrier um so that's a look at the victoria derby and then the big race of the day really is the cornwall stud stakes it's a beauty isn't it um the markets are down at the moment because the final fields um are getting organized as we speak so the favorite will be the next episode and it is definitely the horse to beat you've got the philly satono glow and also of course calvin mcavoy's horse and tony's natural um and then you've got the galling doubt time we've had a bit of money for doubt time with bet three six five but it's a really good race saint gotha they tell me flying and i reckon sea queen will be going to cup day or oaks day oaks day under focus
Speaker 3is staying with us and i can tell you it looks outstanding if anybody wanted to have something each way on here and
Speaker 2that's a year-long horse that they've got a lot of time for and louis the lip louis clifton he's walked in and declared one he goes why is paradoxium fifteen dollars it's fifteen dollars yeah it's more yeah it won't be getting twelve hundred i don't think but in saying that it did go eight seconds of furlong when jason collett wrote it the
Speaker 4other day unbelievable that trial like i was in the grandstand we had natural fling yeah and she had a we wanted to do very little um had emr sign and she was beaten probably i don't know how far um but we were happy what we saw and then when you got the section it was back through the heart rate that is they don't go quicker i'd love to i'd like to get bring bjorn up i'd love
Speaker 3to get this historically historically and i i beg to be wrong if i am but when you see a horse trial that good um they don't usually equate to that in the race and i've seen it before as soon as you
Speaker 4said that he'll come out win by four you know
Speaker 3what and then i'll say i was wrong and you can play again i think that i think that's the way
Speaker 4bjorn trials his horses and gallops he's a strong trainer he likes to give them good hit outs and that's the way he trains well i might be wrong but i've
Speaker 3seen a few horses do that in the past and then think oh gee whiz that was so good and then follow it into the cool more and they just don't
Speaker 2go on with it do you did you do you watch social media did you watch bjorn's day like andrea baker does a wonderful job so she followed her husband around um one morning yeah yeah yeah on a gallops morning and paradox in gallop and there was like it was before his last start effort and he looked at his clock and said but those don't work like that so he could be a horse that just burns up the grass every time he steps out for a gallop but yeah you that's going to be the big question mark with a horse like paradox him is whether he can go that quick for 1200 meters well it was
Speaker 41200 last start and he led controlled and looked like he was going to kick and then fell fell so maybe he wobbled that last 100. maybe bjorn thought that he needed a good hit out because his fitness wasn't up to it i hope we draw near him um personally i'd love to see natural thing with some cover she hasn't had it we were so excited coming in to see that and i think that's a really good thing to do and i think that's a really good thing to do and i think that's a really good thing to do and i think that's a really good thing to do and i think that's a really good thing into this race thinking we'll get good ground which she's never seen either yeah and looking at the forecast it's they're saying up to 20 mils which will obviously really suit the next episode and uh not our affiliate as much but anyway imagine
Speaker 2if the doubtland galloping flashes down the outside defeats the next episode going
Speaker 4good too and i think it's getting
Speaker 2blinkers on is
Speaker 4it yes um yeah well i reckon that
Speaker 2is a smoky the next episode
Speaker 42.7 million what's it worth if it We've got the half brother at home, so I'm looking for it by I'm invincible. How much did that cost you? It would have cost you a bit. $600,000. Okay. It's an amazing race. Before he had done, like, I think he'd won that race in the Gold Coast.
Speaker 2Okay. Yeah. Yeah. Um, so Pembrey's another interesting horse. She's a filly that's very good fresh and she's been kept fresh. Craig Williams rides. St. Gothard with the blinkers on. My man is flying.
Speaker 4That's the one that scares me the most. Over the next episode. Um, well, he's the obvious one, but, but Chris Waller. Can Chris get it right in the grand final? He's won seven Coolmores and, um. He's not bad at it, is he? He's won seven Coolmores and I've been noticing that horse. He's had a couple of, um, gallops with the blinkers on, but not the trials, but the blinkers go on. I think. Do they, Gareth? You know, and, um. Then do the blinkers go on. Obviously he brought brother to a, to a, um, Coolmore winner.
Speaker 3And Boobie was good, wasn't he?
Speaker 4He was good. Yeah. It's a great race. I don't know.
Speaker 2Can he? Ethan Brown. I think he, my understanding is he might have rode the next episode. The other day, because Mark couldn't. And, um, he was on in Boobie and then thought, oh, I might go up to Sydney and ride Jimmy Starr. Um, I remember. I reckon, I reckon, and Boobie, you'd have to prove out of sight to beat in the next episode, weren't he? Or prove just a little bit, but Lloyd Kennewell has done a great job with him. But Gareth, you know, all these,
Speaker 4these stallions with their big futures. And, um, I remember when Sunlight won the Coolmore and there was Zuzane and Lean Mean Machine. And there was. Yeah. Yeah. And, uh, Rittenby and Longleaf and all those horses in behind. And we won the Coolmore and ruined a few of the, the days there. So anyway, let's hope the Phillies can prevail again.
Speaker 2So I might get bet three, six, five to do a Wednesday agenda. We do a top four. I reckon we'll do a top three with you three. You get to pick one each or maybe two. So Coolmore stud stakes. Um, if you really like one, let us know as we go through these cards. I know the Barry draws.
Speaker 4I like the, I like natural fling.
Speaker 2Yeah. Natural fling. Top three. Top three. Yep. Carbine club stakes is always a good little race. Um, it's a great, it's a great. You just want to see the field there. Yeah. You just want to see the field.
Speaker 4Strong tempo is a nice horse running over the, of the haze. I think it's unbeaten, isn't it? Yeah. Yes. That's a nice horse.
Speaker 2All right then. Um, we got the Victoria Derby. I don't like the Victoria Derby unless you've got $15 for Stormy Marco. It's a difficult race really. What price is hierarchy? Um, he was about $11. We might play him top three. Yeah. The wakeful stakes. I've got one for you here. Um, Tharwa. I reckon he'll run a top three easily. Who trains that? Chris Waller. McDonald will ride that horse over the other one, your color. Oh, yeah. Interesting. Amazing. Yeah. Um, the vanity, the best bet of the week, nearly. Um, Regal Ambition.
Speaker 4Yep. We're just hoping full confidence gets a better ride than last start.
Speaker 2I can't believe you sacked Harry Coffey. No, it's disgraceful for you, Calvin. Where's the loyalty, Calvin? No. Where is it? Where's the loyalty? Like, I don't. Listen, John McNeil was in on Tuesday morning and he galloped the filly. Um, Jonathan Munns, I'm just like, come on, Munns. You know, you know the other thing. Come on, Munsy. What are you doing? You should have kept Harry on because you know why? Harry would have put his hand up and said, yep. I made a mistake there at Kilmore. But like Harvey Shane in the test, he'll make 100 because he's getting given another opportunity. Munsey, you should have given Harry Coffey another chance.
Speaker 4Harry Coffey got in, went back in the jockey's room and put an ice pack on his head after that run. He had to sit down for a minute, I think.
Speaker 3You know she's eligible for a maiden.
Speaker 4Yeah. I've been watching how you've been training recently. I'm running them out of their gate.
Speaker 2What about Wayne Hawks and Team Hawks Federalists in the Golden Eagle? We'll talk about that race in just a moment. I said if Federalists beat She's Alibi, I know you've got to double it more than the other day, Wayne.
Speaker 4Is that race on this weekend, is it? Yes, the Golden Eagle, yeah.
Speaker 2We'll talk about that in just a moment. I reckon she's the best bet all week, nearly. Regal Ambition. She was $3 yesterday, now into $2. The Rising Fast, it's a good little race. The Damien Oliver's a beauty. If the rain comes, I reckon Warning will run a massive race. And there's one at a price if it goes there, Wellwall, as well, first up.
Speaker 3My horse will bounce back there.
Speaker 2Which one's that?
Speaker 3Zoo Sensation. Yes.
Speaker 4He will bounce back. Cote Atlantique at odds. That'd be odds, wouldn't it? I'm going to try and get that for our slot.
Speaker 2We need a, we need a horse for the Supernova Packer. We're rambling on a bit here, Gareth. And the last race, the Empire Road Stakes. Surfing Bird. Lady Shenandoah.
Speaker 3Yeah, Lady Shenandoah for me.
Speaker 2All right then. What about the Golden Eagle? She's Alibi. Barry Six, perfect for her, Troy.
Speaker 3Yep, spot on. Can't be beaten. Yep, can't be beaten.
Speaker 4John O'Neill, didn't he, didn't he tip Keira Maher's horse?
Speaker 2I did a, I did a little bit of ringing around after Johnny declared that horse. And they tell me it's international forms okay, but it would need like a masterclass training performance once again by Keira Maher for that horse to get close to she's Alibi.
Speaker 3What price is Bayvucked? Bayvucked is about $8. Barry Ten, going to have to work hard, $1,500.
Speaker 2Well, that's it set up, isn't it, Bayvucked?
Speaker 4Yeah. Tell you what, Jimmy Starr will just win the Russell boarding. And Mr. Miller, Zach Lloyd on, Zach Lloyd on. What price is he?
Speaker 2Golden Eagle, that's a good horse. Yeah, but he can't get close to she's Alibi. Okay. I'm tipping she's Alibi, don't worry. Barry is $6.90, I think she is. That's a good price really for her, isn't it? I'm just having a look at the market now with Bet3. She's $1.80, she's Alibi. Autumn Boy, $8.00. Baywax at $8.00. Skyhook, $13.00. Baywax at $13.00. Amazing Journey, $17.00. Mr. Miller's $26.00. Wow. We'll get through a few text messages before we say goodbye. We've talked about the Cornwall. Hey, guys, speaking of the Cornwall, look at Ali Barber. He's come on from his first up run in the day and he's flying. He will be in the finish. That's from Hoffie. What do you think of Ali Barber? I haven't looked at it properly. No. I think the problem with the number of runners a trainer can have is, it's detrimental to racing. Race 1 Sydney today, 16-horse field down to 10 after Waller nominated 9 and scratched 5 of them. It happens every week. John O'Shea said there is a salary cap in every major sport in the world, EPL, NFL, NBA, et cetera, but not racing. Contentious, yes, but in my opinion, it's ruining racing and certainly I rarely bet when the big stables have 3 and 4 in the race. That's from Philip. We've had this conversation a little bit or it's come up. Your thoughts on all of that?
Speaker 4I think the issue could be fixed if it become harder to scratch on a Metro meeting because maybe it would, you know, maybe Chris would, those trainers may accept with less if they're 50-50 with running, like the Hong Kong model, which we've spoken about a lot at the ATA level, Troy. You know, the last thing we want is scratchings in Metro racing because it's a bugger's turnover. So if it's harder to scratch on a Saturday or a Wednesday, it might sort of naturally fix that. What do you think, Troy?
Speaker 3Yeah, we're talking about that at committee level at the moment. Yeah. So we want to push RVL and give them the go-ahead for it. So it is something that we will be consulting with a lot of our members in the association. So we'll have more news on that in the next couple of weeks. So is it a situation with the scratching or
Speaker 2restricting stable numbers? No, we can't restrict stable numbers. You can't do that.
Speaker 3I totally get that though. And I do think that's a bigger conversation that we need to have and I equate it to, I like the John O'Shea's analogy, but if you take the salary cap and I'm going to get beaten up here because I'm the ATA federal president and it's a hard conversation to have, but if you gave no salary cap on Brisbane and Fremantle, would you want to watch AFL racing in three years' time? AFL football in three years' time? Probably not. But, you know, what do we do to curb, you know, it is, and I don't want to come across as sour grapes, but we're here to make our sport the best that we can. And the way that it's heading, is it going to be the best that it can be over the next 10 years? I'm not sure, but I don't have the answer. And far be it for me to sit here and say that, you know, Chris Waller and Kieran Marr are getting too big. I can't do that. But I do think it's something that needs to be discussed and on a higher level than, you know, the Wednesday agenda. So, well, it's a pretty high level, the Wednesday agenda, Troy. Sorry, with all due respect.
Speaker 4I think it's different. You can't compare as much, but in Hong Kong, I think they can only run two in a race. Is that correct? And they're restricted in stable numbers.
Speaker 3I don't, and it's very, very hard. But the club pays the trainers, it's a completely different.
Speaker 4We're all business owners and, and to start putting rules in like salary cap or numbers, like we'd have to be, you know, those trainers, you'd be tearing their, you know, the revenue down. Imagine that, as you said to Chris Waller, who's got, however many hundred in work, I don't know, oh no, you can only have this many. All the staff, the employers, his revenue would be cut in half. I get it.
Speaker 3And I'm, and I'm totally for that. And I said, that's not the answer. And I don't have the answer, but do we need to talk about it?
Speaker 2The answer is the owners in a way, because the owners are the ones that dictate how many horses these trainers have. So you have a look at all of the major farms. They give all of their horses or their best horses, apart from Godolphin, who would be Kieran Marr's biggest client, but they all go to Chris Waller and I find that interesting because they've got to sell horses to everyone else to stay in business.
Speaker 3But, but you just still, Chris and Kieran are the two biggest buyers at all the yearling sales. Yes. So if you, if you've got a horse that gets passed in, who are you going to give it to, hoping that they're going to buy off you next year?
Speaker 2Yeah. So it's a difficult one. I just think the other trainers need to try and step up.
Speaker 3Yeah. I've spoken to Mick Price about it and he said two words to me, be better. Yeah. And it's very, very good. It's very true. And any owners listening,
Speaker 4I can take another 50. I've got 50 boxes ready to go. Are you all ready to take on Marr and Waller?
Speaker 2And do you know what, one day they were happy. Maybe we need to combine, get a super stable.
Speaker 4It is funny. I spoke at, uh, on two nights ago, um, at the VRC, they did a member's night, which was fantastic. And Chris Waller was the other speaker and he went before me. And, um, they introduced him and, you know, 208 group one winners. And when I got up, I, I just said, I'm only 200 group one winners behind Chris, but, uh, we're on the way. But amazing effort.
Speaker 2All right, then boys. Um, what about the winners this week on cup week? All important, the male from you two.
Speaker 3I like, you want to go first purple streak. Purple streaks running today and he's a really good chance. He's a lovely horse. And first up today, I think he'll run really well with the frosty lane on board. Uh, I really like, I think zoo sensation, um, can bounce back. His work was absolutely excellent on Tuesday. You didn't leave it on the track. Did you, uh, no. No, no, no. It wasn't too hard. I said it was excellent. I didn't say he went too hard. Uh, and I tell you who will run a good race is he'll rip. We'll want a good race on Tuesday on Melbourne cup day.
Speaker 4Yes. Well, we're tipping all week. Are we? Oh, I got one left field on Sunday at Mornington. Sabrina with the blinkers on in a 1200 three-year-old Phillies maiden. Uh, she'll be very hard to beat. Uh, obviously we like natural fling, uh, Monday at Ballarat, a mayor called Milady. Rose will be a good chance of winning. And then, uh, I like a two-year-old Colt that ran second, the debutant who's run, running the Maribyrnong on Tuesday. Royal press, Royal press Wednesday. There was a Frank cool Philly that worked the house down on the course property yesterday.
Speaker 3Well, she actually worked with Chris laser's horse and she will be running in the English banner race next Saturday. But if everything's
Speaker 2well, if everything's well, I can tip her next Wednesday. All right then. So next Wednesday is going to be the biggest show of all. The back of the Melbourne cup. Yeah, unless James, James, James will be off the bench. No, I said Pauline. Come on. I appreciate everything. Um, I said to Ozzie, I'm so grateful for the opportunity to get into this horse, but if I win, I won't be seen for at least a week.
Speaker 4No, I'll give you some advice. I was at the beach and track work the next morning, five o'clock AM, and I felt on top of the world. It doesn't matter how many hours of sleep you get. If you win a Melbourne cup, you'll be there and you'll be feeling a million bucks.
Speaker 2It is a good feeling the next day. I can tell you all the text messages we got today. Where is it? Um, I'll keep going down. I know I was rare. Uh, we're rambling on here. Gareth. Come on, Jay. You've got the guest keeping things on the straight and narrow. You spoke for that long and lost track of what you're talking about. When you do 25 hours on radio, you can't be perfect every minute. Can you go good on your brother? Have you great week? Enjoy. And I went to his luncheon yesterday. I was, I was homeless when you turned up. I didn't forget about underdress all the, all the, like it was. It was a luncheon with all of the high rollers of Melbourne society. And he's complaining about owners, getting owners. Entrepreneurs. I was the only one that was broke in that room and the rest were like multi-millionaires. And there was the food. Yes, very good.
Speaker 4And he was very offside that Richo was in charge, not him. And I said, man, I can't afford you.
Speaker 2Richo was very good. He was funny. He was. And do you know what? Oh, man, I met your beautiful sister for the first time as well. I never know you. She was a security guard.
Speaker 3Isn't she a DJ now as well? Where's she DJing? DJing at the Ballarat Turf Club last weekend.
Speaker 2Well, you've just taken over. No one knows you've got a sister because it's all about you, Calvin.
Speaker 3Liza's a ripper and like polar opposites of Calvin in a good way.
Speaker 2Can I tell an anecdote? Have I got time? Just quickly. So Liza, I'm leaving. I said, thanks very much. And I thoroughly enjoyed it. And I'm done. You were great. She was telling us about growing up with Calvin. And she reckons one day, because she's two years older than you, isn't she? So one day Calvin walks into the room and he sits down on the couch and he just plots himself down on this big couch there at the McAvoy's and turns to her and says, you know what, Eliza? I just love money and I'm going to make all the money that I possibly can. And he was selling watches and everything like that. And I said, he's one of the greatest hustlers I've ever seen in the game. So well done, Calvin. You are, you had this vision. He's gone red. Because he knows it's true. You had this vision and you are living up to all that you wanted to be when you were a kid. All right. Good on you. Good on you there, Calvin. Thank you, Troy. Now come back. 21 minutes past nine. Mark Starr is not far away. We'll hear also from Peter Fitzgerald. They're selling a few Melbourne Cup horses. Wine Dark Sea. Hmm. That'd be interesting. And also, sorry. Wine Dark Sea. And also, I'm for bands for sale. As well. Yeah. Ray Hickson will join us from Asia, New South Wales. And Mark Starr is not far away as well. Time for a break. Plenty more to come straight up. Excuse me. Paulie Sebastiani, did you have fun at Flemington yesterday? I did. You were superb. It was a lot of fun. Thank you. I was so proud of you representing Giddy Up because I had a lot of feedback and they said you were clearly the best on ground. Thank you. What was the highlight for you?
Speaker 5Craig Williams handing out lollies to everybody. What a legend. They were very, very tasty too. And he fist bumped all the journalists after the presser. He said, oh yeah, that's a tough question, Paulie. I said, yeah, that's what we're here for.
Speaker 2Well done, mate. Thank you. Now you've taught me a lot. You've taught me well. Any winners? Did you get persuaded? Did you hear any mail? You did, didn't you, that you haven't told us about?
Speaker 5St. Gothard, I don't know how much you can take from track work, but through the line and past the post, he just looked like he was steaming. Yeah. Ready to run an enormous race. And Lady Shenandoah, thank you for informing us again of Brian and Jenny not going to the Empire Rose and taking top odds. Yeah. You'll be well rewarded if she lobs on Saturday. I appreciate that.
Speaker 2What a telling restaurant you're taking to me live on the street.
Speaker 5Yeah, we'll go to Daniti's, mate. Don't you worry about that.
Speaker 2What about Nick Ryan's horse in the Cornwall G? I reckon he goes pretty good. He does. That's from Mitch. G-Man, can you tell me if Blue Dream is accepted for the vanity? I'll do that in the ad break for you, Damien. Who is riding True Rebel? True Rebel is.
Speaker 5Will Blake Shin hold the ride there?
Speaker 2Or is it Billy Egan? I'll double check that for you. Can you ask Troy what we did about Verdu? I know you've copped a lot of grief over school, Gareth. You've included. But if the rain comes, he's going to be hard to stop out in front. That's from Sean. Thank you, Sean. I appreciate that. 26 minutes past nine. Peter Fitzgerald for Inglis will join me next. They're selling two online, two horses that'll be going around in the Melbourne Cup. Vorban and Wine Dark Sea. So we'll talk to Fitzy about that straight after this here on Giddy Up.
Speaker 1Text us on 0499 736.
Speaker 2True Rebel, yeah, is Billy Egan. He's on it and Boo Bay as well. So he's got a couple of really nice rides, Billy, on Saturday. Our next guest is a superstar. He's done it all, really. Peter Fitzgerald. He's the face of Inglis, if you ask me. And the Inglis online sale is always fascinating to watch. Each and every sale, there's always something interesting. But this time around, there's two horses that'll be competing in the Melbourne Cup that you can buy a share in. And if you ask me, just having a runner in the Melbourne Cup is living the dream. And we're now joined by Fitzy. He joins us now. G'day, Fitzy. Gareth, how are you, mate? I am very well, mate. So the two horses that you can buy shares in are Vorban and Wine Dark Sea.
Speaker 7Exactly. You just mentioned living the dream. There's nothing stopping you from living the dream. On Tuesday, you know, you could get involved here. You can get 1%, 2.5% of one of those horses. And so Vorban, we've got five shares going. So to fill everyone in with a unique, I wouldn't say one-off, but an all-girl spring carnival sale where there's shares in two horses going to the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday. You get a raw ascot as the sale, you know, before ascot week over there where some horses or shares of horses that are running that week at ascot are up for grabs. And it's something that we've used. We've looked to start here in Australia for a little while. And this is, I'd like to think that, you know, the starting point, the first step in something that could really grow over the years. And to kick things off, as I said, that there's two horses with shares available who will be running at Flemington on Tuesday. Now Vorban, everyone knows Vorban. I think this is his fourth Melbourne Cup, started his career in Europe. Obviously, he's been out here with Kay and Adrian for a couple of seasons now. I think he might've come for the Cup maybe two years ago and it never went back. Now Vorban, there's five shares in Vorban. In this, you know, special spring carnival online sale on English Digital, which closes at four o'clock this afternoon. There's three, two and a half percent shares. And then there's a separate two, one percent shares in Vorban. And then Wyndark C, who is well in the betting for the Caulfield Cup. And, you know, it probably wasn't his greatest run of his career, but we've seen many internationals come out here and not fire in their first run, but then, you know, develop and acclimatise more into their second run, especially from Caulfield Cups into Melbourne Cups. So, yeah, there's two, two and a half percent shares in Wyndark C up for grabs. And I mean, this is literally you're buying the dream, as you said, you know, you can buy a share today, it'll be Wednesday afternoon, closes at four o'clock. In less than six days after that, you know, you'll be in the mounting yard at Flemington for the race that stops the nation.
Speaker 2So when do these, when does it come to an end, the online sale? So it wraps up this afternoon at four o'clock.
Speaker 7So that went live on Monday. We announced it on Friday afternoon. We set up, you know, it was up there for people to see. The bidding opened on Monday and it closed out this afternoon, which gives enough time for ownership details to be changed through Racing Australia for the registration of the new owners to be accepted online and in best bets and in race books, et cetera, et cetera, because it can take sort of, you know, 24, 48, 72 hours. But yeah, literally, I mean, there's, as I said, there's what, three, five, seven shares available in these two horses where anyone can jump on. So I want, I mean, whether we've said before, whether you've got 1% share or 100% share, you get the same thrill, you get the same ticket, it's the same mounting yard, it's the same horse, it's the same champagne, you know, the same bottle, you know, in the winning owner's room afterwards. So it's literally the first time this has ever happened, you know, in this part of the world where six days out from Melbourne Cup, anyone can go and buy 1%, 2.5% in one of these horses and beat it at Flemington next week.
Speaker 2So Vorbet, at the moment, there's six hours and 27 minutes. That's 30 seconds. So 2.5% for Vorbet and 10,000, the other one's a 9.5 thousand dollar bid at the moment. 9.5 thousand for 2.5%, the 1% is 5,000, and then Wyanduck Sea, it's 35,000 for 2.5% for both those 2.5% shares. Is this all Australian bloodstock or is it owners inside of Australian bloodstock? How does that all work?
Speaker 7That's a bit of both. I think you'll find mainly it's the owners within side Australian bloodstock, and you know what, to their credit, you're never going to get, well, obviously if they come out and win the Melbourne Cup, that's a bit different, but realistically, you're never going to get more value for your horse six days out from, you know, one of the greatest races in the world, you know, but on the flip side, there's no better time for the buyer to literally get involved because, as I said before, they will be in the mounting yard at Flemington if they want to be, you know, on Tuesday afternoon. So I don't think it's the, I don't think it's the Australian bloodstock. I don't think it's the Australian bloodstock. There's also a couple of shares in Rindervan, who's off to the $2 billion race here in Sydney, the Five Diamonds, in a couple of weeks. I think it's the Australian bloodstock. Now, he's a First Light racing horse, and again, it's just a couple of shares, or one actually, 2.5% share from the First Light ownership group, so to speak. There's lots of owners, you know, in those syndicated horses. So, you know, it's just people offering up the opportunity for them to try to maximise their value of their share. But also, as I said on the flip side, it presents these opportunities for the first time in history, at least in this part of the world. first time in history, at least in this part of the world, for people to get involved. And, you know, the prices you just, you know, read out there, you're looking at, what, $10,000, $9,500 for the Vorban 2.5s and, you know, a bit more for the Wine Dark Sea. But, you know, people with punters clubs and syndicates can find $10,000 or $15,000 to have a runner in a Melbourne Cup. I mean, that is literally what Trevor's made of in our sport, right?
Speaker 2I understand Wine Dark Sea is going to Gallup tomorrow and then Damien Lane will see whether to give it a tick of approval to go to the Melbourne Cup. At the moment, they are desperately wanting to go to the Melbourne Cup with him. So that's an important Gallup. I got a text message from a couple of friends today. I'll read out one of them, Fitzy. There are shares in Vorban ahead of Tuesday's Melbourne Cup. Five of us should throw in $1,000 and we take 1% for $5,000, meaning we would need to earn $500,000 to break even the last 12 months. He's had five starts and collected $591,000. So he would have to do that again, which would be hard. You finish sixth in the Melbourne Cup, you get $160,000. So there is still an opportunity. You're paying for the privilege, I reckon. But he's a nine-year-old Vorban, but he's trained by Gay and Adrian. And yeah, I think it's great to have an opportunity. I reckon, I don't know how much it'll go for. I don't think $5,000, unfortunately, will get it done, Fitzy. I reckon you'll probably. I don't think so.
Speaker 7And I'll tell you what, you know, for the 1%, one of them's at $5,000, one's at $5,000. So even if you worked off, you know, figures around that, and you had six blokes put in $1,000 each, to go to Flemington next Tuesday, you're going to. What's a member's ticket to Flemington cost? It's going to cost $300,000 or $400,000 or $500,000 minimum, wouldn't it, for Cup Day? Yeah. Yeah. So you're getting half of that back for your $1,000. Yeah. And you're getting the experience of a, you know, mounting yard at Flemington.
Speaker 2I don't think there's a mounting yard included, I don't think. We get owner's ticket, right? Yeah, yeah. If you're an owner of the horse. Can you get into the mounting yard? I don't know.
Speaker 7But it depends if you're an owner of the horse. Yeah, yeah. Again, it's a member's ticket for the day, right? Yeah. If you're not in the mounting yard, the member's ticket's cost you $300,000 or $400,000 or $500,000. Yes. At least, I would have thought. Yeah. That's even if you can access to them. They might be tickets that money can't buy. And then you're in the lottery for not only the Melbourne Cup, and as you said, he's nine, right? Absolutely. But he's still racing well. He's fallen these last couple of runs. He's actually really been quite strong. As we know, there's so much prize money around at the moment for these staying races. Either for the rest of the spring or into the autumn and whatnot. I just looked at my – before I came on, and what have you guys got? 35 mil of rain due on Tuesday alone, I think. Yeah. And another 10 or 15 or 20 due on Derby Day. So, you know, we've all learned over the years what he doesn't like are hot days and hard tracks because he gets into that mounting yard and he's sweated up. You know, back when he was – I think he started favourite in one if not two Melbourne Cups. And he got stinking hot days down in Melbourne and he turned it on to the mounting yard and he was a blightish. He turned up white by the time he got on the track. Just didn't sweat. And he'd run into the race beforehand. But again, come Tuesday, cooler day, 35 mil of rain. Loves his – in good form. You know, for five or 10 grand, you get a chance in the lottery. Look out. As well as an experience for a day out. So, it's just rare. It's unique. This is literally the first time it's happened here and it's something that I honestly think, you know, next year, year after, year after, this start might have, you know, 20 or 30 or 40 shares in four or five or six different halls. Maybe not in the Cup, but at Flemington during the week. I think that's the plan is to expand it a bit and to really have a, you know, a wider focus on the group ones or other races at Flemington during Cup week and making this something that continues to expand. And this is the first time people can get involved. And as I said, four o'clock this afternoon. Get your partners' cup together. Get a few mates together. You know, get involved. Get a share. You're joining Australian Mudstock, you know, and every child on the track. Trying to avoid a dark sea. I mean, he's only had 11 starts and won four or five races. I think he won by 13 or 14 lengths three starts ago. And then he beat Dubai Honour two runs. But he's run before we come out to Australia. He knocked off Dubai Honour. And we all know what he did out here. He won a couple of Queen Elizabeths and I really might have won a Ranford. And, you know, he was toe-to-toe with Very Elegant for a number of seasons. And she obviously won the Melbourne Cup herself. So the form's there and the opportunity's there. And you've still got, what, it'll be six or so hours to get your crew together, get a few bucks and see how you go.
Speaker 2Way you go, Fitzy. Well, we appreciate you coming on. It will be fascinating to watch how it all unfolds throughout the day. So just register. If you haven't got an account with English, you can register online. You can start bidding and away you go. Good on you, Fitzy. Thanks very much for your time, mate.
Speaker 7I look forward to going to the back end and watching the bidding happen and seeing Essie and giddy up with Gareth, putting those bids in and getting involved for the listeners. Yes, we'll see how we go. And take one for the team. Take one for the listeners.
Speaker 2I've already got a dog. I've already got a Melbourne Cup chance. I only need the one. Good on you, brother. Thanks for that, Fitzy. See you, mate. Thanks again. Peter Fitzgerald from Inglis. We'll take a break. Mark Sarra's not far away. We'll also catch up with Ray Hickson. In fact, Ray Hickson will join us next. You'll see Australia's and world's best at Sydney's Everest Carnival. Golden Eagle Day coming up on Saturday. Ray Hickson from Racing NSW joins us.
Speaker 8G'day, Ray. Yeah, morning, Gareth.
Speaker 2How's things? Good, thank you, mate. Proxima D was too good in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes and she could win an Oaks now. She's the short prize favourite with Bet365.
Speaker 8Yeah, wasn't she good? She'd made a habit of winning by narrow margins, but she put a bit of a gap on them in the Spring Champion. I think they were good. Lupein sent Monophilia down to try to win the Oaks quite a few years ago now and I think she ran third, but she, Proxima D, just looks bomb-proof. She's able to sit on the speed. She responds to pressure. Yeah, it's going to be very interesting to see, you know, that field come next Thursday and how she goes, but she'd be brave to think she couldn't do it again.
Speaker 2What about the Golden Eagle on Saturday? Like, she's alibi the Victorian Barry Six. She's a short prize favourite, Ray. Is she over the line?
Speaker 8I don't think we've seen. I don't think we can claim anything's over the line. We've seen her get beaten at short odds. We've seen Carying Rising get beaten at short odds. So, look, she's clearly the horse to beat. I think the barrier suits her quite well. I think when Fred went up to draw the barrier, he was the second last to draw one out and there were six and ten available. So, I don't think either were particularly causing a problem. The only question mark with her is how she copes with the drop from 2,000 to 1,500 metres. Look, every time we've seen her at Randwick, she's been excellent, even in defeat behind Autumn Glow. But, look, it's a good quality Golden Eagle field. You know, the likes of Bayvark up there, Skyhook's racing well, Autumn Boy. He'd be pretty sick of seeing the side of she's an alibi, wouldn't he? But, you know, the great thing about the Golden Eagle, Gareth, I'm sure, as you're aware, is the charity aspect. And a million dollars out of this 10 million is donated to charities connected to each runner in the race. They receive 10% of the prize money. So, for example, the winner, if, say, it's she's an alibi, the donation will be about 525,000 to the Roy Simmons Foundation, which is the charity connected to her. And it was interesting hearing Fred Novke talk last night about the charity aspect of this race and how great it is. A charity that's close to his heart, that's involved in the race. It's not the one that she's an alibi is connected to. But speaking to him, he was just rapt that so much money goes to good causes and that racing's able to do it. So that's the great thing about the Golden Eagle. It might be a $10 million race and it's a group one and it's an excellent race. But, you know, a million dollars goes to some very good causes.
Speaker 2Yeah, I agree with you there. I think that's really the best part about the Golden Eagle. Like a half a million dollars to a charity does go a long way. And there's 18 opportunities for charities to earn good money there on Saturday in the Golden Eagle. And then we've got Warwick Farm today. Six races, but geez, it's a good little race meeting on a Wednesday afternoon. Have you got any standout punting options for us here, Ray?
Speaker 8Yeah, look, the two horses I like the most on the card, and we've got an odds-on favourite in one of them, which is Love Story in race five. So I'll leave it aside. But I quite like the races either side. Number four, number two, Ellipsis. I think that if she doesn't win today, she'll win next start. I thought she was excellent first up from a sticky draw. She's drawn a lot better and a lot fitter. So I think she'll run really well. And she's an artist, a horse that obviously Melbourne hunters would be very well familiar with. She campaigned down there quite a lot. She was very unlucky in the Nibison a couple of weeks ago. I feel like she's bursting to win a race. And the last today, that's Taylor. Taylor made for her. So, look, those two horses are the two I'm keenest on today. But it could have started just a little bit earlier than three o'clock.
Speaker 2Yes. Well, you're the boss at Racing NSW. May we have a talk to Mr. Hickson and see what you can do. Mr. Hinton and see what you can do.
Speaker 9Well, yeah, I think there are probably bigger issues than that.
Speaker 2Yeah, Mr. Hinton's just got you covered just a little bit. But you're not far off him anyway.
Speaker 8Just a bit, yeah. I think he's pretty safe. Yeah, look, it's still a good meeting this afternoon and Obviously, we've got the Golden Eagle and we've got the big dance meeting on Melbourne Cup Day on Tuesday as well, which has really developed into a good race day that complements, you know, the big race. Yeah. So, anyway.
Speaker 2Good on you, Ray. Go and get them, mate. We appreciate your time as always. Bring on that Golden Eagle and we'll be backing those two horses today that you've recommended.
Speaker 8Give them strength.
Speaker 2Thanks, Gareth. Here's Ray Hickson. Thanks to Racing NSW. Race four, number two, Ellipsis. And she's an artist. Race six, number four. Time for a break. The champion, Hoop Mark Zara, will join us next. Welcome back to Giddy Up, Gareth Hall. With you, Paulie Sebastiani. Fields will be out pretty shortly for Flemington, Derby Day and also Golden Eagle Day at Randwick. Can't wait to dissect this Bendigo Cup. Meeting with Myles Fitster. So looking forward to that.
Speaker 5Runnison, do we know if it's going to the Carbine Club? I've got a little mail that they might not be going there, Gareth. Yes, Benny Mellon. I don't know. I'll find that out. Might be one to do some digging on, mate.
Speaker 2Yes. Now, just having a look at the vanity. Regal Ambition will be tough to beat. But Blue Dream is going. So someone asked if Blue Dream was going. It is going. So it's been accepted.
Speaker 5And Ben Mellon has been booked to ride. Fantastic. Someone's got a ticket for 50 to 1 off the text line, Gareth. Have they really? Yes. Someone's messaged through asking about that particular Gareth Brown and they've got a decent sized ticket. So good luck.
Speaker 2Tommy Spence is also going to join me. He's been joining me on Saturday on race card. Very good judge. And he's going to join me with his best bets there from Bendigo today as well. So, yeah, looking forward to dissecting those cards.
Speaker 5Now, Hopewell Rocks from the Bendigo. Cup will be keeping connections. We'll be keeping a keen eye on what Solcombe does. Is that right? Yes. He needs to finish top three, Solcombe.
Speaker 2That's correct. If Solcombe finishes top threes into the cup, the Euphrates needs Solcombe not to finish in the top three. And if he wins, he'll get a half a kilo penalty. And that will probably be enough for him to get into the cup
Speaker 5and replace Hopewell Rock. Can confirm. I just did get a text message. Runnison has not accepted for the Carbine Cup. There you go. Yeah. Runnison has not accepted.
Speaker 2It's still a nervous time if you're back to Hopewell Rock. And I've mentioned this a few times. Unless someone doesn't pass the CT scan, there's probably a good chance that Solcombe does maybe run into the top three. Anyway, the champion, Hoop Mark Sarra, is ready to go. Mark, welcome back to Giddy Up. Thanks for your time, mate.
Speaker 10Cheers, Gareth. How are you feeling? Yeah, good. I did some gallops yesterday and punched out five jump outs just this morning. And, yeah, feeling good. I'll be cherry rocked for Saturday.
Speaker 2Were you worried? After that fall that – just talk us through that fall once again. And, obviously, it looked terrible when you were watching it live. So, just talk us through it.
Speaker 10Yeah. So, I was sort of coming through. I was starting to make ground quick up on the inside. And there was just a bit of interference. And I just clicked a heel there. And I think most jockeys know when you fall, you can nearly self-diagnose your injury straight away. Yeah. Because the stuff you break. Or what you know wrong is the things that hurt straight away. If things hurt later, it's usually you're fine. So, I fell and I obviously had the wind blowing out of me. And I was just hunched over. And I was sort of feeling my legs and arms. So, I said, look, don't feel too bad here. But I just saw that my ribcage and around where my lung is, all that part was pretty sore. Because that's what got hammered. I think I was lucky. I've already broke my collarbone before. So, it's got a big sort of knob on it where it's all calcified. So, I reckon if I didn't have that. It probably would have been the first thing to go. So, you get that. You go to hospital. And then you sit around for hours waiting for scans and all that sort of thing. And you just hope everything's all right. Yeah, obviously very sore. But luckily, there's no major damage.
Speaker 2And the vest that you were wearing, didn't the horse go over the top of you well? So, I guess that played its part.
Speaker 10Yeah, I think Bo Mertens might have clipped me on the way through. And I'm not sure if Jai actually got me or not. I was lucky the horse went. Half yours went right. Yeah. Yeah. And I went left. So, I didn't get rolled on. But when they fall like that, when their legs get from underneath them, you've got nothing to brace. You just get speared straight into the ground. And I was very lucky.
Speaker 2Yeah. And they tell me that you were pretty confident that you were going to go very close in that Caulfield Cup.
Speaker 10I would have. Look, I was sort of that inside line of St. George and Zaran. And we had a speed slope. We sort of got taken out of it a bit. I reckon I would have been finishing right up the bum with Craig Williams on St. George. Yeah. It would have been a great Cup trial. But anyway, we're just happy that me and the horse are both alive.
Speaker 2Thank God for that. I think everyone was like, yeah, you're watching that race. And Kingswood wins the race. And you're happy for Gavin Bedgegood. But everyone's heart sinks, basically, when they see that. When the jocks go down, the horses go down, especially in a Caulfield Cup. They tell me. That you were blown away with the response that you got from your friends and family and the racing fans out there.
Speaker 10Yeah. I think I made the comment. I said, I got more texts falling off than I did for winning the Caulfield Cup. So, yeah. Look, the racing people, as harsh as they can be on you, when you're in times of need and when you have a bad fall and that, everyone seems to rally around. So, yeah, it was nice.
Speaker 2You're much loved, mate. There's no doubt about that. And then, from a mental perspective, as an athlete, competing on the biggest stage of all now during that Flemington Carnival, and you have something that happens, how do you deal with it? Is it easy to get back on the horse? Or do you, like, is that a challenge for you to be mentally right to go if that gap's there again that you just automatically take it?
Speaker 10Yeah, I think it's no mental challenge for me. Like, if I was right in the last race and I could have gone, I would have went. I was actually, I was more filthy when I fell because I thought I was going to run so well. And I was just, I was filthy. And then after, I'd think about my injuries. But everyone was like, oh, you're so lucky. And I was like, I want to go on close to winning. I'd go close to winning. So, I think mentally, no problem. Yeah, like I say, I had to wait a week. If I could have ridden last Saturday, I would have. But the doctors, we just wanted to be, you know, on the side of caution, which is fair enough. But, no, I can't wait to get back out there. I'll be no worries.
Speaker 2Let's be honest. If you're on the short price favour and the Cox Plate, you would have been there at Flemington on Saturday.
Speaker 10Yeah, 100%. I was sort of said, I was lucky my ride was just having, you know, it was more or less having a look around before that you wouldn't have thought he could have won the Cox Plate Middle Earth. But, yeah, I would have been pushing every boundary I could have to ride there for sure.
Speaker 2You're riding for Kiramar in the Melbourne Cup. I don't think I've ever seen a trainer really hit form. And he's been a great trainer for so many years. But his team are just firing at the moment. He's always been confident. He's always said that Middle Earth is his best chance to win a Melbourne Cup. Do you share his confidence, Mark?
Speaker 10Yeah, well, I just love the fact that he, after the horse won in Brisbane, he was just like, righto, let's just set it for the Melbourne Cup. So, I think he had in his mind that he ran a slashing third last year and he wasn't going to waste any runs or waste the handicap. And I think he gets to the race that he's finally ready to win. And Kieran's got his chair right. Like you say, he's flying. And I don't know how many runners he's got now. I've lost count. But the fact that he's saying, mine's a bit. I'm not sure he says that word to anyone he can remember on the interview. But I hope he's right and away we go.
Speaker 2Oh, I laughed. I mean, like, what's your favourite colour at the end of the day? Like, you know you're going well when you can't remember how many horses you've got in a Melbourne Cup, Mark.
Speaker 10Absolutely, yeah. Like I say, he's flying and happy to be on one of them. And if he's given it the big tick, I agree with him.
Speaker 2You work with him closely and you're good mates with him. What makes him so good, Kieran Marr?
Speaker 10I think, like, he gets there to these trials and that sort of thing and, look, he runs his eye over every horse and he's able to change the work, if need be. Like, he doesn't just go, right, this is our set work. Every horse does this. He, like, he'll come and he'll look at it before a trial or after it. He'll go, well, I know we're meant to go to the races in two weeks but we just can't off seeing that and how the horse looks, so we'll wait. He listens to feedback and he's got a really good young staff. You know, he's got good young people who are happy to listen and learn and it seems to work.
Speaker 2That's the key. Like, I think most of his staff are under 30, including, is Will over 30? I don't know, Will Bourne, he might be now, but, like, Sam Kavanagh is under 30, the CEO, so he does like youth, Kieran.
Speaker 10He does. I think he likes young people willing to learn, not some of the older people being in the game for a while and might get a bit cranky and be set on their ways. Where he likes, like, a fresh view, younger people, happy to adapt with the times. I think it's a good idea.
Speaker 2We're quickly approaching 9:58. It's okay, man, I'm just going to take a quick break because I do get cut off at 9:58, then I've got to ask you about the next episode because I've just been talking to my weather man and it looks like the rain might be coming, which I would imagine would put a smile on your face ahead of the Cornwall Stakes. So the champion Hoop Mark Saar is my special guest. This is Giddy Up, all thanks to Bet365. Don't go anywhere. We'll continue on our chat with Mark Saar straight after this here on Giddy Up on this Wednesday morning.
Speaker 1Text us on 0499 736 736 Live across Australia This is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall
Speaker 2Welcome back to Giddy Up The champion Hoop Mark Saar is with us He's got a big book of rides there on Derby Day The next episode, mate How excited are you for this cool move?
Speaker 10Yeah, he's been one that's sort of just been coming along beautifully This prep took a little while to get going But unfortunately I didn't get to do his last trial on Friday Which I was a bit disappointed But Tom Stockdale I think gave a glowing report I did a gulp after the Dane Hill Which he flew in So I think he's just going to be cherry ripe Like you say, a bit of rain around A bit of rain helps his cause Look, I'm convinced he still goes pretty good on the dry But he's proven on the wet So might slow the others down a bit as well
Speaker 2How much better will he be coming out of that Dane Hill? Because he was first up from a long time there in that race
Speaker 10Yeah, I mean you think You know, Kieran Hawes has always improved a fair bit into the prep He's aimed him up just to, you know, this race second up He's had a trial in between Every time I've seen the Hawes He's just looked better and better So I expect him to just be absolutely cherry ripe for the Dane Hill
Speaker 2Can you compare him to a Tentiris?
Speaker 10A little bit They've got similar sort of quite laid back nature And the next episode is a little bit better out the gates Has been than Tentiris Tentiris is a water horse You walk out and then you build and sprint So yeah, they're both back markers Yeah, there's a little bit of similarity there
Speaker 2And forget about winning Melbourne Cups This is the big race, isn't it? Like he's won a $2.7 million cold purchase at the sales If he wins, he could be worth 30 plus Surely there's, like, you would have done the deal already For obviously getting, what, a service once every year, I reckon, with him And away you go There's your superannuation And there's your super, basically That's what I'm trying to say there, Mark
Speaker 10Yeah, I mean, I think that'd be a given, I'm sure, with the owners If I win that for them, I can give that It's never a given I mean, I won the Cornwall on Merchant Navy Who everyone was saying, here's your superannuation And I think he did three years at stud And Cornwall got rid of him to South Australia So you just never know how they're going to go at stud But this horse has got the breeding and the looks, I think, to go very far Once he finishes racing
Speaker 2You had a few options, I think, in the Victoria Darby But you've chosen Vallis, is that right?
Speaker 10Yeah, that's right I've been on him I actually did a bit of work on him really early in the prep Look, another one that Kieran's had set for the race His team's flying It's a very even year Sort of didn't love what I've seen out of the bars on Saturday And, yeah, so we're going to go this way But, yeah, I think there's a number of chances in the race So it looks pretty open
Speaker 2Yeah, it is a pretty open derby, isn't it? But it's worth $3 million We'll see most of them out, do you think? Because that extra 500 metres can be a long way for these three-year-olds
Speaker 10Yeah, for sure I think you can take that Probably 75% of them won't run the trip And you usually just hope for a good barrier And, you know, the best resting run you can have possible To, you know, save your horse for the last 400 If you do any work on these young horses They tend to blow up before you can get to the straight
Speaker 2Yeah Anything in the Empire Rose?
Speaker 10Idle Fly in the Empire Rose for Maddie Smith
Speaker 2That's a great ride
Speaker 10Yeah, she did tick along okay Probably just needs to find her best form But she got an each-way chance, I would have thought
Speaker 2She was off the map this time last year in that race And she was no match for Pride of Jenny But it was hard to make up ground that day So, yeah, I think that's a good ride What other rides are you looking forward to on Saturday?
Speaker 10Well, we've got Warnies in Damien Ollivier He's trying to go back-to-back there So he'll have a good chance Especially if there's a bit of rain about as well Yeah Yeah, that's probably it The group ones and him
Speaker 2Will you be on Meridius?
Speaker 10Yes, I think so I don't have to tell my manager about that But I'm pretty sure
Speaker 2And then the Melbourne Cup You're riding, of course, Middle Earth Have you got an Oaks ride yet?
Speaker 10No I can't even name a filly that I've been riding That's been going much So I have to hopefully pick I couldn't even tell you what's favourite in the Oaks But yeah, I'll try and pick one up there
Speaker 2But it's your time, isn't it, mate? You love it Obviously, you had a great race But was it with McDonald last year Where you got four in front of him And kept that advantage? It was, wasn't it, last year When you started Derby Day on fire?
Speaker 10Yeah, yep Yeah, that's right I got pinched a break on him When he wasn't there at four And then I think he won We went head-to-head In about the second or third race on Carp Dainty I think he beat me And he was spruiking a fair bit He was sledging Yeah He was sledging And I think he rode one winner For the rest of the car It's always a good battle It's good when he's down He's very competitive Very competitive It makes it more enjoyable to ride short
Speaker 2We need more sledging, really From time to time And you're great I reckon you'd be superb mic'd up That would take it to new levels To get new eyeballs on the racing game Zara mic'd up
Speaker 10You'd have to do a fair bit of editing Before I went through
Speaker 2Yes, how's the NFL going?
Speaker 10Going alright It's been a bit up and down year But I was keen on a couple on the weekend That won My Vikings are 6-0 So, yeah It's going alright
Speaker 2So, have you booked the Super Bowl yet, then?
Speaker 10I'll be going to LA this year So, any West Coast Super Bowls, I'm there Locked in Just got to work out my flight path We'll be right
Speaker 2Now, it must be a big cashie for you tomorrow If Mark Hunter's speaking At an event that you're speaking at What's the pub called again? Near Flemington? The Duda The Duda Gala The Duda Gala It's a great pub It's the second best racing pub in the North West Behind the Ascot Vale Hotel But it's some line-up I want you to ask Mark The tough questions as well
Speaker 10Yeah, I think I'm on half the appearance for you Should be a good afternoon If you haven't got a ticket You should get down there It should be a bit of fun I think Kelvin A couple of your crew up there Kelvin and Yeah, Troy And Troy So, it's a good little panel Should be a bit of a laugh
Speaker 2I said to them when they left They're like They're saying Why can't we get paid to be on Giddy Up? And I said Well, you're getting paid there tomorrow But I had a look at the line-up And I saw Hunter and Zara And I don't know how much It costs to get you two out To an event And I thought These poor blokes aren't getting paid much Unless they've got a big budget This pub So, there you go They do it for the love of the game Yeah, and so we should
Speaker 10They'll probably sell about five horses each While they're there
Speaker 2Yeah, a hundred percent Well, mate I know you love this big stage There's nothing better than what Zara In full flight in front of a packed house At Flemington, mate It must be something It must give you It must be an unbelievable feeling When you're dominating Derby Day In front of 80,000
Speaker 10So I enjoy the walk-ins Just even the walk-ins Great, the crowd Different vibe Derby week Cup week, sorry So, yeah Really looking forward to it
Speaker 2The best quote ever After you got beat I think towards the back end of the day Yeah, it was close I think you finished second I don't know what losing feels like So, hopefully that's the case for you on Saturday Good on you, mate Yep Cheers, Gareth There's Mark Zara The champion hoop Seven minutes past ten We'll take a break On the other side of it Um We'll find you some winners With Bag of Tips Join the conversation

Good, thanks, mate What are you expecting today?
Speaker 11What I'm expecting today Is different to what I expected over the weekend We had a heap of rain over the weekend And the forecast this week Was sort of pretty cool And not overly dry in conditions It hasn't been overly warm But we've had sunshine most of the week So the track's dried out beautifully So, yeah, we're lucky to come up with a good fall Okay So any
Speaker 2rain predicted this afternoon?
Speaker 11No, no rain at all predicted It was beautiful blue sky This morning It's meant to be cloud increasing And the clouds are starting to roll in But it's a light breeze No rain So it's a really good day To be down at the races
Speaker 2All right, beautiful So any wind conditions to report?
Speaker 11No, sort of A lot of moderate southwesterlies Which come across them in the straight Or a bit of a headwind Out of the 1100 shoot But they're not overly significant It shouldn't affect racing conditions
Speaker 2So any pattern today? Or every horse should have a pattern? People should get their opportunity No, I think since we've had these races
Speaker 11Played really I see no reason why it shouldn't So, but yeah, we'll see how the day pans out
Speaker 2Good on you, Wayne We wish you the best of luck in the club there today
Speaker 11No, thanks very much
Speaker 2There's Wayne Tucker there Benny Calusi, hello to you from Bet365 Gareth, how are you, mate? I am very well You're looking forward to this weekend How are your future plays heading towards The Flemington Carnival?
Speaker 12Yeah, I've got a few Stormy marker Oh, that's I told you on Friday Yeah, thank you Thank you for that, uh, stormy Marco and call me air and my two big ones for the Derby, both at a nice double-figure price. And then I've got a couple of multis rolling through Sydney. But, yeah, those are the two main ones. Anything in the Melbourne Cup? Nah. My couple that I had in the Melbourne Cup won't be running. One of those was Aliana. Had her at 100 to 1.
Speaker 2Yep. So that sucks, but it is what it is. Yeah. She wouldn't have won anyway, mate, after watching her and the Cox play. How's she going to win a Melbourne Cup on that?
Speaker 12I thought her run was fantastic in the Cox play. Birdman kicked back to beat her. Yeah, but the eye can lie to you a little bit when they go that fast. Yeah. They can be on tired legs late, but you get them out to a staying trip and they don't go as fast.
Speaker 2If you think Aliana should be in the Melbourne Cup, then Cosmic Crusaders should be in the Melbourne Cup. He went straight past that. He could run in anything. Yes. Is he going to the Northerly? He is 100%. Is he 350 for the Northerly? I'd have to check.
Speaker 12He's definitely going to the Northerly. He can win the champion stakes as well.
Speaker 2Yeah, he'll win the champion stakes. He's going to beat him over 2,000 again after watching him.
Speaker 12So with bet 365, he's currently $3.50 favorite, 375 with a bet boost. I mean, Birdman off a slightly softer tempo.
Speaker 2No way he's beating Cosmic Crusader. He might be able to turn the tables. Pride of Jenny's in that race too.
Speaker 12Champion stakes? No.
Speaker 2Oh, the Northerly. Yeah. Yeah, sorry. Birdman, I think he's going ahead. That'll be confirmed today, Birdman. So they are pushing.
Speaker 12And Aliana, not sure yet?
Speaker 2I'm not sure. Chris Waller usually makes his decision today. Okay. Yep. Myles Fitzs is ready to go. G'day, Magic Man.
Speaker 13Hello to you, G. Hello to you, Benny. Well done on the best and fairest as well, Benny. Thank you, man. It's a superb year you've had with the footy. So well done on that. And hello to the viewers.
Speaker 2They give you best and fairest, folks, when you just hang out the back and get all the cheapies. Yeah, pretty much. Yeah. What do you get for best and fairest? Is there a clause in your contract that you get a bonus?
Speaker 12No, I don't have that in my contract. Just the trophy? Just the trophy and a medal. And yeah, thanks to all my fellow defenders out there for doing all the hard work for me. Did you thank your beautiful partner, Olivia, in the speech? Yes, I did. Oh, that's good. And the host gave me a nice leg up. To do so. Did we tell you you were going to forget? Oh, he reminded me.
Speaker 2Morning, Liv. Milo, Bendigo Cup's one of your favourite days. Did you go to the Calcutta there last night?
Speaker 13No, no Calcutta last night. The pub got sold that I did the Calcutta at. So it's been a great event there. The boys are on track today and probably a bit disappointed I didn't get the call up. But that means I can sit here with the screens on and dial in. This is hands down the best punting day for me statistically over the last. Seven or eight years. Nearly for the entire carnival. So I'm always super keen, Bendigo. Unbelievably fair. Rail in the true. Good four deck. It's one of the best punting services in the country.
Speaker 2I've got the Bet365 account ready to go there, Myles, with your confidence at Bendigo today. We'll kick off in the first to mate and plate. Hot Sambas are scratching the five.
Speaker 12Scoville is our $2.60 favourite here for Ethan Brown and Kieran Marr from Resident. $3. Running Rich has been the really good firmer this morning. $4.60 and Magnasaurus Rex $5.50. They're the only four in single figures.
Speaker 13Interesting race. All come out of different sort of maidens. Running Rich, I can understand why with the upgrade in the track there to a good four from a soft seven. That's a horse that'll be sitting up on speed where Resident and Scoville are probably going to be those pairs back. I'll still have it as a race in two between Resident and Scoville, the two and the six. Probably leaning towards the six Scoville. So I'm going to play there with a bet. And then save the two Resident. Definitely have Running Rich. If it plays on speed, I'm happy to sort of concede that in the first race for Chelsea Jokic and Jared Robertson. And then included the one Magnasaurus Rex behind it. So I'm going to play six, saving two from three and one early.
Speaker 2So he's six to play, save on the two, and then three and one for the minor placings. Race two, benchmark 64, 1,300 metres. Some bliss comes out the five. So that means there's only a field of five. And this benchmark 64, Ben.
Speaker 12Very small field. Purgatorio, our $2.90 favourite from Soundbite. Soundbite's been 3.80 into 3.20 this morning. Centenary Florin has been the big drift up. Out to $4.80, open $4.00. Hydro Rush 5 and Nicky Ivey is $7.50.
Speaker 13Well, as you know, I was pretty keen on Sun Bliss in this. It comes out. I'm still probably happy to risk Purgatorio. So I've landed with the sixth Soundbite here. Coming out of that Kilmore run, the last 600, they're very, very good, and especially on a good deck. Purgatorio coming off the soft deck there at Geelong and does get back a bit. Can be a little tardy out of the gate. So I've got Soundbite box seating. I do think it'll be very, very hard to beat. I am six from the three, then the one and two. Six, three, one, and two in this race.
Speaker 2Six, three, one, and two in the second race. Three, benchmark 66 over the 1,100. This race is a beauty. Scratch the one, the 11. The 14, Simply Steffi comes out. The Emergency Semantics was the favourite. So it took a lot of the percentage out of this market. And Subgrinder, the 16, is also out.
Speaker 12Yeah, this is much tougher. Purple Streak opened $8 on Monday. It's now $4.40. No deductions there. So a lot of that money was early. Eucana, $5.50 from Prestige Lucky. Also $5.50. Ben Allen's only ride for the day. And Star of Omaha is on that same line.
Speaker 13Yeah, one of the more wide-open affairs on the day. And a few horses. Here, that if you're in love with, I couldn't talk you out of them. I landed on the five, Eucana, for Mitch Friedman and Dean Endel. This horse has got plenty of ability, we know, from the previous prep. Second, first up here. And I think can go one better. Really hard to ignore a couple of others here. The four, Purple Streak, depending on what they do from that gate. I think they've got to roll forward, and they will anyway. Has a pretty handy record. Also, the three and the two, I wouldn't talk you out of them. Saviard with Bean, we've been a tad disappointing. And the two, Romantic Miss, has completely and utterly broken the clock at the last couple. So, I've landed on the five, four, three, and two. Look, however you want to play it, you can. Probably maybe a small nibble, the five. Maybe a small nibble, the two, as it's over. But I won't be going too hard here.
Speaker 2A couple of interesting runners here. Star of Omaha, my man, Mickey Harvey, is involved in this horse. Obviously purchased by Kira Marr, by Will Bourne. It's first up for Kira Marr. Has there been much money for her here?
Speaker 12Not really. Not really, Jay. It's sort of just holding its price at $5.50, open six.
Speaker 2All right. Then I reckon she's a watch horse there. Star of Omaha there in the third race at Bendigo today. Race number four, benchmark 66 over the 2,400 meters. Scratch the two, eight, 10, 13, 16, and 18 here, Benny.
Speaker 12And I'll tell you what, there has been plenty of money for this Kira Marr runner. Malek was $2.30 earlier this morning. It's now into the red, $1.90. A couple punters got better than $3 on Monday. Yahoo Bar is $5.50. From Celtic Park, $9. It's a big drifter. Open $6.50 on Monday. So it's out the door. And No Rumors is $11.
Speaker 13Yeah, I got a fair bit of this horse at the open. And I'm happy to keep playing. I know it's a 66 over 2,400 meters, but I'm pretty keen here on the seven, Malek. Coming out of that 66, the last race it was in, I think if you go back further through the preparation, I think you can see that it does have a bit to offer. Very late, it was good as well, which is what you want to see from these horses going to 2,400 meters. Outside of that, I'm happy to play sort of four, one, and six. It's wide open when you get outside of that horse, but it's all one-way traffic here. One of the best of the day. Race four, number seven, Malek.
Speaker 2Race five, 1,600 meters, benchmark 75. Keenan Nuff and Savannah Chill, the seven come out here, Ben.
Speaker 12Jenny, you think is our favorite. The owner has been met with some really good support in the last couple of hours. $3.50 into three from Cushioned, $4.60. Kiwi Jenny, $6. The Muffin Man, $7. So, Tony Otter. Bray, I reckon he's got three in this race. And Itsukushima is $11.
Speaker 2He did tell us yesterday, Tony, Jenny, you think is the one that he'll be backing.
Speaker 13Well, Jenny, you think's in my numbers. I've got Cushioned on top just. I do think that the price on it on offer, I'm happy to play. More than happy to have a little nibble on the 12 as well. 11, 12, three, and nine. But not a race I want to dive in sort of Greg Lagana style here over the mile. Another one here I just want to have a little bit of a look at. But I think 11 and 12. If you're sort of playing around those two, you can't go too far wrong.
Speaker 2So, 11, 12, three, and nine. We're going to take a break. This is Giddy Up. And this is our preview of Bendigo Cup Day with Bag of Tips. Myles Fitzner, Benny Caluzzi, and Gareth Hall with you. We'll come back and have a look at the quality legs for the Bendigo Cup meeting next.
Speaker 1Text us on 04009736736. This. Is Giddy Up. With Gareth Hall.
Speaker 2We're up to race number six with our Bendigo Cup preview. The Bag of Tips. Thanks to Bet365, Gareth Hall, Myles Fitzner, and also Benny Caluzzi with you. But, Paulie Sebastiani, you've got our boost tours here with Bet365.
Speaker 5Yes, I do indeed. Race four, number seven. Malik, Johnny Allen, and Kieran Marr combined in this staying event over 2,400 metres. We're getting $2.10 with our friends at Bet365. With the boost.
Speaker 2There you go. That's that. That's one of Milo's best bets as well. It sure is.
Speaker 12It sure is. And it's been $3.40 into odds on with no deductions over the last couple of days.
Speaker 2Race number seven. Benchmark 70 over the 1,300 metres. Scratch two, four, eight, 10, 11, and 12 here.
Speaker 12Yeah, just while we're on air right now. Yes, Yoshi's just been hit again. So $2.60 into $2.40 and now holds favouritism back from Lorbra. $2.60. It's been a firmer as well this morning. The only other one they're backing outside these two favourites is Wings and Propellers. at $8. Yep.
Speaker 13Violet? Yep, another one I'm more than happy to dive into, and I'll keep backing it as well. Yes, Yoshi, crossover noseband off, nose roll on, first time. All this horse has to do is emulate the run from a couple back from the Sir Henry Bolting handicap, and I think it'll be taking care of these. The one issue here is barrier six for Ethan Brown. Now, Yolo and Miwa can push up, and so I need, yes, Yoshi, to be maybe tracking a horse like wings and propellers. Now, the 10 and the six, wings and propellers, and Lorborough will probably lead them out. Yes, Yoshi, if it can get across there for Ethan, and in Ethan we trust he's going at 25% or 28%, his last 100, should be able to sit in the 1-1 here and roll out on them and be two good late. So, yes, Yoshi, a special, the 11 from 10, 5, and 6. So 10 and 6 will be on speed. The 5, you'll have your heart in your mouth with Per Semper from the back of the pack, but 11 a special from 10, 6, and 5, the numbers here.
Speaker 2Right. Race 7, benchmark 70, 1,300 metres. Scratch 2, 4, 8, 10, 11, and 12. So 2, 4, 8, 10, 11, and 12. This is a good little race as well.
Speaker 12It is. We've got one deep in the red here in Dirty Look who's enjoying a wonderful campaign so far. In terms of weight of money, it's the best back runner of the day, $1.60 in from black figures from Legacy Bay, $6.00, Alero, $7.00, and Flying Embers, $10.00.
Speaker 13Just another one that when we got the black, you had to pull the trigger and go you've got to trust this track and you've got to trust these horses on a good surface. So Dirty Look on top, for me, I think it looks, yeah, probably too short now, but if you've got the early money, well done. Outside of it, you can probably play Legacy Bay, I think second up for Moody and Kath Coleman, I think will go really well. I've included the one Alero for Kieran Maher and James Johnson goes third up here and comes out of a nice race, which was that one Paul 78 there at Flemington on a heavy 10, I think can improve off that run. Outside of that, as well, maybe Flying Embers for Tom Dabinig and Shelley Inglesey, the Winkers go back on that horse again. The three Dirty Look, again, one out probably, 14, 1 and 6 are numbers outside of it.
Speaker 2All right then, so three special from 14, 1 and 6. We move on now to the Bendigo Cup, the Ladbrokes Bendigo Cup over the 2,400 metres, worth a half a million dollars. Taraman saw the 11 is scratched, along with the 14 affluential for Andrea Leake and Bob Peters. So this is an interesting market. This is an interesting race and there's so much up for grabs here, especially from a Melbourne Cup perspective, Ben.
Speaker 12100% there is. In Kings Valley, our favourite, he just keeps running through brick walls, doesn't he? $3.40 and the Betboos here is quite popular from So You Are, $4.20. Lidsteel has been a drifter, despite being down near the minimum, $6 out to $8 since open. Solcombe is $10 and the Euphrates goes forward again at 12s.
Speaker 13Interesting race. You've got horses coming out of, Caulfield Cup in Stafford, Geelong Cup, you've got a few of those and then Santora out of the Herbert Power along with Machine Gun Gracie. I'm using the Geelong Cup form as a background here. I know there's one, the Kings Valley out of the Moonee Valley Gold Cup. The Geelong Cup form is it for me. So I've gone with the horses I thought ran pretty well in behind the internationals there, that being Lidsteel and Barclay Square. They're probably the two for mine. They're happy to have a Dutch play. So the eight Lidsteel were getting a good price hit at the moment. It ran fifth. And Barclay Square, I mean, this is a horse that I just continue to back. You can keep taking him in the top finishers markets with Bet365. Big open track. There'll be tempo on with the Euphrates and the like here, even including So You Are. I think a couple of those roll forward. Machine Gun Gracie will have no option but to go forward as well. Lidsteel can sit in behind them and then watch for big Barclay Square down the outside. So I'm eight and three with a bet. Outside of that, the five Sulcombe and the six Kings Valley can round out my top four. So eight, three, five, and six. But I have included a couple of others in the quaddie because I had to go a little bit wider in one of the quaddie legs because a few of these have been pretty short.
Speaker 2So it's been some campaign for Kings Valley. Unbelievable really. I think I was reading
Speaker 12fourth or fifth run at 2,000 metres plus in the last month. Yes. Which is unbelievable.
Speaker 2That's an iron horse.
Speaker 13Yeah. You'd have to put the flag up eventually.
Speaker 12The current state of play of who can get into the Melbourne Cup?
Speaker 2So basically there's only two horses and they are Sulcombe who needs to finish top three and the Euphrates who needs to win and hope that Sulcombe doesn't finish in the top three because no one's getting past Saran or well, the Euphrates can't go past Saran.
Speaker 12You'd think two kilos would be the most that they could
Speaker 2cop. Yeah, they won't cop two kilos in this race. Half a kilo I reckon. The Euphrates only needs a half a kilo. Kings Valley and that need two and a half I think. They're not going to get two kilos for winning a Bendigo Cup.
Speaker 12Didn't the Geelong Cup winner got two kilos? Two kilos, yeah. The Metrop winner got two kilos as well. Unlikely though. Unlikely.
Speaker 13Just on that, it's interesting to see the form lines. You talk Kings Valley, so he's been, he went around $101 in the Turnbull. Of course, he's beaten 11 and a half. He then went to the Caulfield Cup, which was probably I think the peak run there. He went to a softer Moonee Valley Cup. He gets beaten by Juju Caboo, who came out of the Metropolitan. But we've seen the Euphrates. I don't think it's going as well as what people think. So I'm happy to risk that Metrop form going forward again. But geez, you're going to the well once again. From the 19th of September this horse has had four runs. So it's another horse I've just had to take essentially on. Being that this is going to be a bridge
Speaker 2too far. I think what I've learnt this spring these days with modern technology and the way that these horses are prepared, I don't think it really matters how far they're going. How deep they go into their preparations these days. Because obviously Kieran Marr would know best Andrew Leak with Cosmic Crusader. They're backing up Cosmic Crusader and a Northerly after the champion stakes. It's just the modern times these days.
Speaker 12It's remarkable isn't it? I think it's case by case. You trust Kieran. You can't play that. But it also takes a very good and a very tough horse.
Speaker 2Race number nine is the Benchmark 78. This is a heat of the MCC series, which the final will be conducted on Oaks Day. Scratch the 5, 14, 17 and 18 here Ben Caluzzi.
Speaker 12Belmezan has been a really good go here into $2.40 and outright favourite from Cole Clink, $3.40. Hutchie always tells me to call it Colonel Clink. Rosa Outarola is $4.60 out to $5.50 and they're the only three that they want.
Speaker 13All things being equal here, Belmezan should kick their heads in. Now the only query about this is where it gets to in the run. This is a horse that can be back in run. If it's trying out a fraction and playing on speed you're going to see a few of these go forward. Black Storm, Chest of Gold, Van Roy, High and Proud might even be up there. I've got Belmezan a bit of a special. I've included the six Rosa Outaria and the three here as well to round out a few of these numbers late in the day. I'm going to go tighter in the quaddie, but I am 11, 6, 3 and I don't know really if you want to add one more for a top four, maybe even look at the 16 probably.
Speaker 211, 6, 3 and who knows, he finishes fourth basically from Milo. Bendigo Cup Day, Milo, your best bets?
Speaker 13Best bets, 4-7 Malek, 6-11 Yesyoshi, 7-3 Dirty Look and 9-11 Belmezan. I've also taken them in an all up. I probably don't go diving too hard into Dirty Look now. You're only getting the black. If I give you any indication of what I'm thinking with the quaddie, I am 11, 1 out, Yesyoshi. Then from the 3 and 14 then in the cup, I am 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 and 8 and I come home with 11 and 6. So super short in the quaddie, wider in the cup and looking forward to a big, big day at Bendigo and of course Belmont.
Speaker 12The mile was all up. The four leg multi currently with our boosted prices is 23-1.
Speaker 223-1. Yeah, like it. It could be a big day for the punters or it could be a really tough day. There's a lot of good things on paper. Feast or famine we call it. Yes. Bring on that Bendigo couple. It's a great day. It's a day that Milo has dominated in previous years. Let's hope he can do the same on this Wednesday afternoon, Milo.
Speaker 13Let's hope so too. Just before I let you go, G-Man, to go on from yesterday. Belmont, we've got the couple there. We go race 1, number 1, official business to knock off one last resort. Race 3, number 6, gentle touch, a special in there for Simon Miller and Chris Parnham. And then we roll into race 5, number 4, Reginette. At $4.40 with bet 365 and race 6, number 5, jackpot bingo. Around about the $4 or $5 mark as well. So four big plays at Belmont and a big day at Bendigo. Look forward to chatting later on in the week, boys.
Speaker 2Good on you, Milo. Thanks for that. There's Milo's Fitzner with his Bendigo preview. We'll come back with plenty more. We've got previews left, right and centre on this Wednesday. Have we got acceptances? Take it away then, Benny, before this
Speaker 12break. Yes. What do you want to do? Straight to the derby? Yes, please. Okay. Cormier, barrier 3. Stormy Marco, barrier 16. Oh no, barrier 16,
Speaker 2Stormy Marco, the worst possible
Speaker 12gate. But wait, there's more. True Rebel 17. So that's not good. Moshidi, 18. How many in the derby? And Vallis, 14. 19. A full field of 16 and 2 emergencies. There you go. Empire Rose, Lady Shenandoah draws 8 of 11. Surfing Bird, 9. Unleashing 10. Idlefire, 7. And Concord, Connie, 6. And then what's the other group group on the, um, the Cornwall, the Cornwall, let's go to round race six. The next episode is drawing barrier 14 and 14 down the straight. Paradoxium 13. So that's his bunny to chase. St. Goddard gets a blinkers back on or blinkers first time. He's barrier six. Natural fling eight. Perfect. And who's the other big chance? The tono glow is four.
Speaker 2So everyone wants to follow Paradoxium.
Speaker 12He'll just go where the best ground is. Well, it's interesting because the straight was playing towards the inside last Saturday. But with all the speed in the Cornwall sort of drawing the outside, maybe it's a little bit different.
Speaker 2With the weather around as well. It's not a great barrier. He can't be favourite now, Stormy Marco, from that guy. He can't do any work. So McDonald will have to go back to last and try and weave his way through. Cormier is probably going to firm right in.
Speaker 12If you took the $8 Cormier, you're probably looking pretty tidy.
Speaker 2Yeah, he's just got to get the trip. What about Skua and those type of forces?
Speaker 12Skua has drawn 13. He'll just roll forward anyway. Signetti 12, ICU 10. Hiroki's drawn 4.
Speaker 2That's a good gate for Hiroki.
Speaker 12I wasn't sure if Hiroki was going to run. Yeah, he's definitely running.
Speaker 2Yep. So Milo's best bets at Bendigo. Race 4, number 7. Race 6, number 11. Race 7, number 3. Race 9, number 11. And he's quarter 11, 1 out. 3 and 14, second leg. 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 and 8, third leg. And he's coming home with 11 and 6.
Speaker 1Text us on 0499-7365. 736 736 live across australia this is giddy up with gareth hall welcome back to giddy up it's been a
Speaker 2bit of fun we're all over the places we always are on a wednesday morning benny caluzzi and now mickey gannon joins us g'day mickey
Speaker 14good morning to you g and benny how's things

Speaker 14bit of golf this morning living the dream just got back to uh jump on with you cover off warwick farm we don't start till three o'clock this afternoon so that's a late one and just having a look at these uh barriers that have come through for saturday so uh the cool more is fascinating isn't it the next episode drawn one of the next episode of warwick farm we're going to be talking about warwick farm wide paradoxium there's a few yeah key speed influences out there natural fling and pembury as well i wonder where they're gonna look the better going sort of being back towards the inside i think benny might have just alluded to that earlier so be interesting to see what they do here from uh from that start point i'll tell you
Speaker 12what g how do they beat regal ambition in
Speaker 2the vanity it's home isn't it touch wood touch wood touch wood
Speaker 12what's it drawn it's
Speaker 2home it's mickey d okay um yeah i think it's nearly the bed of the the week but it's probably short enough now it was two dollars it was three dollars this time yesterday i'm sure about three six five
Speaker 12we'll give you 250 that
Speaker 2could be our mega boost horse could be yep yeah regal ambition i'll put that in has mickey d been in good form has mickey d been in good form yeah he has been in okay form
Speaker 12hasn't he everyone's in good form according to you jay yeah you're fine
Speaker 2what do you reckon is he not in good form i'm
Speaker 12checking it now but i've been back too many of his horses mickey d yeah off the top of my head i don't i don't think he's going the best no no he's not he's he's down slightly recently okay so he's
Speaker 2he's going terrible time to bounce back yeah yeah he needs to lift basically but good horses like he's riding a thousand guineas i thought it was a good ride under the circumstances what else was he going to do from there yeah the track was a bit funny yeah he was beaten by the track um do you know what i'm going to do i'm going to come back and we're going to have a chat to mickey gannon i'll see if i can actually hear you next time around join
Speaker 1the conversation text us on 0 4 9 7 3 6 7 3 6 live across australia this is giddy up with gareth hall welcome back
Speaker 2to giddy up we're so excited the we forgot about there's a warwick farm meeting that we're meant to be previewing but the fields are out for derby day um so i can i can hear you now mickey gannon there was something wrong with the desk actually i had the volume down to zero um so um so stormy marco barry is 16 um true tone barry 15 so mcdonald can't jump off stormy marco because true tone's drawn better they're drawn alongside each other and you're disappointed too in the wakeful you've got a bad barrier draw for one of your plays there oh i hadn't backed you up yet
Speaker 12but i was gonna back thawa at nine dollars all in and she's drawn barrier 18 of 18 yeah so that's a bit sticky what i will say about stormy marco he should come in two spots to barrier 14 because emergency one is drawn eight and emergency two is
Speaker 2drawn one okay there you go um it's still not a great draw and he's been the best reward in the cool more i think most of the big guns are drawn pretty well like paradoxing in the next episode next to each other st gothard can follow um horse like natural fling um it all depends which side they go so tono glow's got it like i reckon she's a star but barry four on paper there's not much speed around her well barry's barry nine so she's speed as well so it's not bad now for the phillies because they can
Speaker 12follow each other barry forward the way the track was playing last week down the straight probably good yeah but i don't know if it's going to flip on saturday natural fling's drawn really well in eight yeah she might be one of the map horses have you had any early bets there mickey gannon
Speaker 14yeah yeah backson got uh quite a few times so yes keen on him i i think he's drawn perfectly to get on the back of a natural fling because we know he can land four to midfield next episode it's interesting so out there back wide they're going to be towards the outside and there's no horse that's going to take him to the race so paradox him's not going to take him in the race paradox is going to be eight lengths in
Speaker 2front of him yeah yeah i wonder if paradox him can get 1200 meters
Speaker 14he needs to go do some yoga some breathing work paradox him he was going
Speaker 2seven and a half seconds of furlong seven and a half seconds of furlong in the trial so um be interested we just had a couple
Speaker 12sydney ones as well so i'll just quickly read out these russell balding barriers jimmy star 16 of 17 headley grange 10 pericles 2 graftaburner 17 ninja 13 headwall beautiful in three joker's grin nine mahuna eight and king of russo 17 in the russell boarding so
Speaker 2it's the sydney stakes and everest coming together yep all right then um so yeah great day of racing can't wait bring on derby day now let's have a look at this gareth does
Speaker 14the yes the chat of the derby distance just completely go out the window now you've got you got 16 plus two emergencies over 2500 meters like you know we're just not
Speaker 2playing on from it um the derby debate over 500 will go on until i die if we want it could be next year if james j it could be wednesday if james j it's gotta stay
Speaker 1225 yeah i reckon
Speaker 2it'll stay 25 can we just stop
Speaker 14talking about it gareth
Speaker 12i am you're the one who brought it up please there's talk of it going back to 2000 and going to five mil yeah do we never want a three-year-old to run in the cox plate again that's that's
Speaker 2basically what you're saying you might as well put extra money on the cox plane instead of the derby anyway um people are sick of hearing it so we're going to move on and try and find you some winners at the sahi super dry plate 1400 meters race one host of scratchings here put a line through the one two four eight 13 14 15 and 18 here
Speaker 12plenty of deductions nearly 30 cents worth and it leaves quarterback our two dollar ten favorite from schnitzel's girl 420 nevada falls six dollars 50 in from a pretty big price earlier and how do you say this one mickey g ligularia is nine dollars for godolphin
Speaker 14benny it's what we go with uh plenty of chris's horses are coming out a few of them head down there to the carbine i believe glen orgy the roaring sun potentially we'll wait and see what happens there and go through that barrier later on but the quarterback clearly on top i really like his work there uh first up he was doing really good work behind barracks and a farry both horses have ability they also had pattern in their favor on that occasion and the quarterback made really good ground was really good to the line that was 1200 meters gets to 1400 meters the tick over trial uh sienna reamer who's flying a really good apprentice uh jumps off and jmack on uh that just strengthens the chances there so 12 16 9 11. i think the 12s get a job done i thought since the girl had um her opportunity to get the job done last time behind italian spirit the margin was significant enough wasn't a big enough gap behind them for me to really get excited 12 16 9 and 11 in the first having it back to 12. i'll
Speaker 12tell you what the quarterback would have been very hard to beat in this race
Speaker 2yes mr fabulous a scratching race or number seven and race two in the benchmark 78 over the 2400 meters here ben savvy
Speaker 12spy rock hard fit goes forward is our 2.50 favorite from nikosi 4.60 it's been a little bit of a drifter today can't say the same for night's armor it's been really well supported 7.50 into 550 today and andron 6.50 keen
Speaker 14on the six sonic bender here for santa grandma this horse made up really well good ground kieran mcavoy's board went back from a wide draw last time spot on them some 10 lengths of the 800 meters and made good grounds uh that was over 2400 meters now a second time 24 100 meters for the preparation andron won that race arguably say fell in or probably you could suggest that it was just suited by the pattern of the day um it's six dollars here sonic bender seven i think they should be um so better to be much shorter than that horse and i think savvy savvy spy comes from a hawksbury benchmark 64 some of those hawksbury figures are inflated that doesn't stop the punters betting to them happy to take it on it could be it could be okay but i don't i don't really have much time for it i think sonic bender's clue the horse to back here gets perfect profile perfect um time to claim two kilos in 52 kilos with the apprentice numbers are six five two and three six five two and
Speaker 2three race two race three 1400 meter benchmark 78 scratchings
Speaker 12are clear clear of scratchings and clear of deductions as well which means komodo dragon has just been a really good go weight of money into two dollars twenty from verbill is five dollars felix majestic is five dollars fifty just keeps on bumping into one or two better and stallone 750.
Speaker 149825 the numbers here um nana on top i really liked her effort down there at caulfield maker grounds it was a strong enough race gets up here with what again 53 and a half kilos really good claim so dropped significantly away is rock hard fit and finds a race where there's a fair bit of pressure felix majestic stallone burge and komodo dragon they'll all roll forward i'm happy to take on komodo dragon it was pretty impressive there second up winning over the 1250 the medieval farm um had excuses like over race you know there was a few sort of issues probably should have been ridden with a bit more intent but now they might overdo it this time ride with intent with four other key or three other key speed influences in the race happy to take it on and i think nana is the one we can you get the right price we're back the nine each way the eight stallone there lands on speed rock hard fit can be competitive 9825 race
Speaker 2four is that's the first leg of the quaddi yeah these first leg of the quaddi race three um first race is at three o'clock in sydney today race four vinery start handicap 1100 meters regimental colors is scratching the one good little race this year benny it is
Speaker 12it's four dollars a field ellipsis is our favorite looking to improve second up from ballet delight four dollars 40 it's been met with some decent support since open scenic points been the drifter four out to four dollars 80 and shady road is 750 into five since monday
Speaker 14couple of these meet again the two ellipsis goes on top numbers are two 11 four and three ellipsis was pretty good there made good ground just too far back off drops in grade um obviously she has to carry the 61 kilos which might slow it down a little bit but i think if she's out in front high balling she'll get every possible possible chance to win uh ballet delight 55 kilos gets in might have to check that might end up being half a kilo over there with james on but we'll double check that um later on and then we'll see what happens next week we'll see what happens next week was pretty good there on debut all you can do is win pattern was definitely in her favor on that occasion but i think she's got ability and that would obviously obviously suggest that given they go to the midweeks benchmark 72 so 211 43 happy to take on kajenga i think ellipsis will get the better of it so 211 43 g
Speaker 2move on to race number five and this is over the 1400 meters the toyota forklifts handicap um nana comes out because it goes around in that earlier race benchmark 72 um and then we'll see what happens next week we'll see what over the 1,400 metres here, Ben.
Speaker 12And it is the daughter of Justify and Love Story. Very, very short here. $1.40 for the Coolmore team from Chilli Margs. They're actually backing this one, even despite the favourite. $10 into $7.50. That's where the money stops. Reflect is 10 out to 15 and Live is also 15.
Speaker 2Plenty of love stories after a few Chilli Margs there. In your time, they tell me, Mickey Gannon.
Speaker 14Yeah, just love the Chilli Marg, G. Still do. In fact, look forward to sharing one with you next week.
Speaker 2Yep, I'm a big Chilli Marg.
Speaker 146'1", 4'11". Keep them away from me. 6'1", 4'11". Love Story rolls across. Look, she's an improving type, I justify. She'll continue to improve. 1,200, 1,400 metres. 6'4", 1,400 metres. Lands on speed. What could go wrong? I think she'll be very, very hard to beat, but not the right price to back. Diddle Dumpling's a horse that does interest me. It was really good. First up, 1,200 metres, Warwick Farm. The Winkers went on, I think, second up. And she regressed significantly. They're taking them off now. So after two starts with the Winkers on, she might bounce back. If she bounces back, she can give Love Story a bit of a run for her money. We'll only take the two in the quad here. Numbers are 6'1", 4'11".
Speaker 2Race six over the 1,200. Benchmark 88. Scratch the 10 and the 11 here, Ben.
Speaker 12She's an artist. Probably going to be hard to beat here. $2.60 and favoured in the last from Hilly Air 550. Asgard at $9. Amazing Eagle. Can he find some of his better form at nines? And Cantiamo is also that price.
Speaker 14Yeah, she's an artist. She got us last time. We backed her. We had a good bet. And unfortunately, the ride was not up to it. That was group three grade. Gets to benchmark 88. We get Zach Lloyd aboard from a really fair start point. Just hope they're not too far off them. You know, Ford of midfield will be a great place to be here this afternoon. Regimental colours, Asgard of Fierce and Monty Cates. They can all put pressure in the race. I think she's an artist. Sort of sits six, one off the fence and should just be bar too good for this slot. The six, Hilly Air has plenty of ability. They're fine. They're fine, J-Mac. So it wouldn't shock to see this horse continue to be backed. And he has really good first up credentials. So his figures, career peaks come first up and they're fine, James. So expect to see a good performance today and probably a horse that could blouse them late. Four, six, five and seven. And my number's there.
Speaker 2Best bets, please, at Warwick Farm, Mick Gannon.
Speaker 14Yeah, we'll go nice early, Gareth. We'll go race one, number 12, quarterback. Race two, number six, Sonic Bender. The best value play anywhere in the country. Race three, we'll back the nine as well. So you probably play your place multis race two and race three and back the one quarterback in the first. Quaddie? Righto, let's go. Race three, believe it or not, we will have the nine, the eight and the two. I'm taking on Komodo Dragon, so it could be all over early. And we'll go to race four, the second leg. And that is the two. And the 11, two and 11. Race five, the six and the one, six and one. And we'll come home in the last leg. Race six, four, six, five and seven.
Speaker 2So nine, eight, two, first leg. Two, 11, second leg. Six and one, third leg. And then six, four, five and seven on the way home. Good on you, Mickie Gannon. We'll catch up with you throughout the week. You'll be in the studio live for the weekend preview. Can't wait. Thanks, lads. Good on you, Benny Caluzzi. We'll catch up with you on Friday as well. And you'll be here Monday and Tuesday.
Speaker 12I will. I will. Gee, no capes with the top four multi this week. Yeah, I know. Take your cape off.
Speaker 2Yeah, it was disappointing, wasn't it?
Speaker 12Let's just get one home.
Speaker 2Look at him. He wins the best of the bearers and he's yapping. Unbelievable. You know what? I haven't been able to sleep. I was so sad that I let everyone down. So I apologize for that. But you got to pick yourself up and try and lift.
Speaker 12That's it. We'll be back.
Speaker 2Good on you, Benny.
Speaker 12See you, mate.
Speaker 2Thanks for that. Now, we're going to catch up shortly with Chris Nelson. I thought he'd be ready to go right now. Chris O'Nelson. Then we'll have a chat. We'll get Claydo before 58. And then Darren Carroll. We might go through some of his best bets as we continue on Bagger Tips. Lincoln Moore at Murray Bridge likes race 3, number 12, Pocket Pyro. Race 4, number 3, Wee Wee Mishree. And race 5, number 2, Nosy by Nature. So 3-13, 4-3, 5-2. At Harness Racing meeting at Shepparton today. Fake Collection, race 3, number 7 for Fake Collection. Race 5, number 5, Lather Me Up. And race 7, number 6, Millie's Boy. Other tips there from Darren Carroll. So that's race 3, number 7. Race 5, number 5. Race 7, number 6. Michael Dumasney, thanks to Harness Racing New South Wales, the home of the Carnival of Cups for Australian Music Royalty, meets Quality Harness Racing Action. He likes Better Cup each way. Race 1, number 10 each way all day. And race 5, number 9, Wee Wee Mishree. And race 9, babbling, babbling each way. Race 1, number 10. Race 5, number 9. So that's Bathurst. That's the story there. Paulie Sebastiani, what's your best around the country?
Speaker 5Oh, best around the country. I like Kieran Marr's horse in the first at Bendigo today. The two-year-old filly Scoville, the three-year-old filly, sorry, Scoville, who ran second behind Aroused, who of course ran really well there on Cox Plate Day up the straight at Flemington. So she is race 1, number 6, Scoville. Ethan Brown, Kieran Marr combined. Roman Insidegate will either lead or sit behind the leader.
Speaker 2Why don't you get Louie to come to the microphone as well? Take your headphones off. We can see you in the background there, Louie. Hello, Louie. Come on, Louie. Come around. He's a bit gun-shy, I think. He's a bit gun-shy. He dominated the microphone there yesterday. Louie the Lip. Louie's got a special for us.
Speaker 5Yeah, he's got a special. Take it away, Louie.
Speaker 15It's a bit boring, but I'll back in Troy Cawson's horse, Purple Street. Okay, 4-0-60. Yeah, I've followed that horse since first prep. I think it's got a bit of ability. He never said to his face that he was going no good there for a while,
Speaker 2and now he's flying.
Speaker 5Hey, that was, mate, we give them the rev up, and they come on the Wednesday agenda, and they turn their form around.
Speaker 2No, he never misses now. Unbelievable. He's in red-hot form, the Larkin and Causton's camp at the moment. Hey, it's 10.58. We're going to come back with more of Bagger Tips next here on Giddy Up. ♪♪♪

Speaker 2It's right on 11 o'clock. Big final hour coming your way as we welcome in our friends there on SEN Turf. So in Western Australia, Darren McCauley not far away. But we're continuing on with our bag of tips. So if you're just joining us, Myles Fitzner's best at Bendigo today. Race six, number 11. Race seven, number three. Race nine, number 11. And his quaddie numbers, 11, one out, 314, second leg. He's got a few in the cup. One, two, three, five, six and eight. And 11, six in the final leg. And Mickey Gannon at Warwick Farm plays an all up. Race one, number 12 to win. Race two, number six, the place. Race three, number nine, the place. But he also likes those second two as strong winning chances. And his quaddie, which starts in race three. Nine, eight, two, first leg. Two, 11, second leg. And then six, four, five and seven in the final leg. You can wake up with New Zealand Racing and kick your day off with a Kiwi bet. What's gambling really costing you? For free and confidential support, visit gamblinghelponline.org.au. Before we get to Mark Clayton with his best there in New Zealand, you've got to check out racingqueensland.com.au for where Queensland is racing today. Tomorrow, we're at Eagle Farm. Chris Nelson, hello to you. Today, we're at Eagle Farm, Gary. Oh, today, sorry. I've lost the plot, really. I've seen my great mate chapping his walkie. Yeah, well, you spoke for that long on the last track of what you were talking about. And he just put me off my game. Sorry about that. We're at Eagle Farm today. Yes, we are. No problems at all.
Speaker 16We are. We are, and we're on a heavy nine, and we've had 46 scratchings, so smallish fields throughout the day. We're going to go with race two, horse number 10, Stella Garcia, who's had one start, ran second at Doonban behind a stern effort. Not a bad form line there. I thought she did a good job up on speed. Ben Thompson sticks. Tony Golan trains, I think, with that run under her belt. She'll strip a lot fitter and wiser. She stays at 1,200. Obviously, we don't know about the wet ground, but if she gets through it, I think she'll be very hard to beat. So race two, number 10, Stella Garcia. I did tip race three, number eight, Buddha Bar yesterday. I still think we'll run well, but taking a horse at odds on never been on a heavy track worries me, so you're on your own there if you want to back Buddha Bar at red figures. We'll go to race four, number seven, Ready, Set, To Go, who was around $5 before a couple came out this morning. Still in black figures. I think he's well-placed here. Had two starts. Ran on both. Ran on it well at both of them over 1,200, gets to 1,400 metres, is by better than Ready. So you think he'd get through the ground okay. So that's going to help. We will go with Ready, Set, To Go, race four, number seven. And the one that will get through it, race five, number 12, Tecna. I think we said yesterday was around $26. Nothing like that now, but still double figures. Very unlucky last start. Two heavy track placings I think will run well. Race five, number 12, Tecna. You can back her each way.
Speaker 2Enjoy Eagle Farm today.
Speaker 16Thank you, Gareth. I hope you enjoy your day too.
Speaker 2I will. Wake up with New Zealand Racing. Kick your. Kick your day off with a Kiwi bet. Mark Clayton's done the form for Pukakawi today. We already had one race from that venue. Clayton, hello to you.
Speaker 9Hey, good morning, Gareth and all your listeners.
Speaker 2What are you liking today, mate?
Speaker 9Warren Kennedy, he rode six here on group one day, Railway Day, a couple of seasons ago. And he started off on the right foot today with Sweet Talker. And good on a statling run. But I do like when he's riding in race four. Now, she's only lightly raced. Money's sort of bouncing around between the $9 and $10 mark. And her last one I thought was really good. Her two runs to date have been okay. Her last, our Aussie, I thought showed plenty of merit. And I think not a bad sort of field. But I think Tarina Aurora, number 11 for me here at double figure odds.
Speaker 2I'm just checking what price there. You bet $365. Yeah, $10. Tarina Aurora. So race four, number 11. What else are we doing?
Speaker 9Yeah, well, I've got a lot of respect for Crimson Sky and Celebrate now. Dan's doing a race. But I'm going to go into the other hardest race of the day. Race seven. It'll go. Race seven, number five, Truly Divine. I thought I stuck really well last start. And a pretty competitive maiden field. And had every chance to weaken out late. But just kept fighting and gets me. Back cartwright for Tony Pike. A stable, you can say, is always in form.
Speaker 2Always. I don't know. Always. That's a big call.
Speaker 9Oh, yeah. He never misses much, old Pikey. Yeah, a little bit of class about a stable. I don't go to the races unless they're ready to run.
Speaker 2Yes. All right, then. So we'll back it. Race seven, number five.
Speaker 9Anything else? That's pretty much it today. I thought maybe race two. The quarter's down between the four and the 11. Four just gets a long way out of its ground, Wedding Bell. But she's got a massive sprint on her. And I think at Pukekohe, it's got one of the longest straights in New Zealand. And I thought the biggest threat would be Crown of Perfume. It was pretty good on debut at Matamata. Just never lay down, set on the speed, and kept fighting to the line. And plenty of money for Crown of Perfume. But I thought Wedding Bell and Crown of Perfume in the second.
Speaker 2Good on you, Clay. They're always great to catch up with you on a Wednesday.
Speaker 9Thanks, Gareth. Yeah, love it.
Speaker 2There's my Clayton. Wake up with New Zealand. Hey, Clayton, just quickly. Someone was telling me the other day, Hutchie's purchased half of New Zealand with the media and all that. And they said, can we listen to Giddy Up? And you can definitely listen to Giddy Up on the podcast in New Zealand. And obviously, racing.com. I think you can listen or watch it there and on the app. So you can listen to it on the app for our New Zealand friends. Because we get a few text messages from New Zealand listening to Giddy Up live. So you can do that. You can do that on the app, I reckon.
Speaker 9Yeah, look, I'm not smoking your pipe here, Gareth. But I've been pulled up by so many people in New Zealand who listen to Giddy Up. Yeah. And mentioning the show, how good it is. Or you tipped something out the other day. And I said, what? Look, Giddy Up, that's Australia. He goes, no, no, we all listen to it. And this is from club committeeman and vice president.
Speaker 2I appreciate the Kiwis.
Speaker 9The following is huge. And look, we ran a show, The Good Oil. Chris Nelson was part of it. He was part of our show. Yeah, yeah. And the club we had there. And it just made my life on a Saturday doing the race. And I would have loved to do more. But, yeah, if they could bring that back, yeah, with Hutchie.
Speaker 2I'll see what I can do, Claydo. You can definitely listen onto the app. Yeah. Yeah. So it's the way to do it. And racing.com. Jason Grimson was texting me. He's in New Zealand. So it's easy. Because I had a few text messages come through today. But there you go, Claydo. Hey, I appreciate you, Claydo. Thanks for that. Good luck at Pukakohe today.
Speaker 9Yeah, thanks, Gareth.
Speaker 2Thank you. There we go. From Jig Racing, Josh McLaughlin. I think he was three from four last week. And he joins us here on Giddy Up once again. He's got his hometown cup. He was a boy from the Mallee that moved to Singapore. Now he's back at Bendigo. Josh, welcome back to Giddy Up.
Speaker 17Very good morning, Gareth. How are things?
Speaker 2I am well, brother. Geez, you were on fire there last week. Let's hope we can continue on that good form. But we're going to talk about the best jump out horse that you've seen this week.
Speaker 17Look, I didn't really have a standout this week per se, Gareth. But there's certainly a couple that have been jumping out that are heading to the right maiden. So I think Regal Harry was the best maiden winner of the week last week. Yes. Which we were lucky enough to find on your show last week. But they certainly didn't miss him in bedding. He's operating a 63 now. So whether Clayton shipped him off abroad or not, I'm not sure. But if they headed to a 62 with six and a half kilos, I'd just be looking out for him there. And he'll be awfully hard to beat. So I think they had him ready for that race. But he's a nice horse and he's got a good turn of foot and he can go through his grades.
Speaker 2Yeah, he was very impressive. I don't think he cost Clayton too much money, but he's got a big motor. He did it pretty easily there at Mornington there the other day. More importantly, what winners have you got for us this week?
Speaker 17Yeah, well, we'll have a look. I think Bendigo Cup Day is a great punting day, Gareth. Great punting track. I think Bendigo and Pakenham are the clear two. Two provincial tracks in Victoria that you can sort of do your homework with a bit of confidence without having to wait to see what happens throughout the day. So it's a track that we're keen to get involved in. I thought Dirty Look was the best bet on the card, but she's been well found now. She went up around that 250 mark. She's into some ridiculous price now, about 160 or so. But smaller fields, I don't think, though, we'll settle too far back here with limited pace in the race, Gareth. I think she'll just posse up third or fourth here. Her last win was outstanding. She's had a beautiful little jump out. But since her last run where she went across the line with Wellwell, who's a very good track worker, and he'll line up there at Plumbington on Saturday, I think so. I think she's the anchor for most of the multi bets, Gareth. But probably the two other most interesting runners I thought on the day was, I think in the first, running rich for Jay Robinson will run well. There's been a bit of money for that horse this morning. He's probably unlucky to still be a maiden. He's only had the one jump out, but I wouldn't read too much into that. I think he's probably done a bit of private. Work on his home deck there, leading into this. There's not much pressure in it for a 1,000-meter race. So I think he'll get to the top without having to spend much juice early. And I think with a horse that won't be a maiden for long. So probably play him top two. And the other runner I thought was a very interesting runner on the card is race three, number 13, Star of Omaha. He's had a significant stable change now with Kieran Maher. There's no official. Jump out, but that's not unusual with this camp. Now, I think it's a, when you say one of the. Horses go to a race and they haven't had jump outs and there's money for them. Take that as a positive because they usually show up and run well. So this horse was outstanding first up, last preparation at Flemington. I don't think they're going to be looking to give this horse two or three runs to get her ready. I think she'll be ready today. So just keep an eye on the market there. If it firms late, I certainly want to be in her corner.
Speaker 2Yeah, her run there at Flemington when she was behind Educator. Yeah, it's just like she was tailed off and then flew home. And then obviously she was out the back at her next three starts. But it is a big stable change. Kiramar takes over. So it'll be interesting to see how she goes, Star of Omaha. Currently 550 there with Bet365. Is that all, brother?
Speaker 17Yeah, and there's another horse, Gareth, that we flagged up last week that came through probably the best maiden the week prior. And that was Stripe Package, which is the $1.7 million colt for the. It's Freedman's there, the Wooden Basset colt. He came to a very hot maiden with Splendacious. Splendacious is going to go to a race on Cup Day and be highly competitive in whatever he lines up in. They ran really good time there. He's nominated for three races on Friday night. So I don't know if the acceptance is out yet. But there's two at Pakenham and one at Kilmore. But look, you'd need a very good first starter that we just haven't seen or seen enough of to knock a horse off like him, which the camp are very open about him possibly needing that run first up. So, look, he'll be awfully hard to beat in whatever he lines up in on Friday.
Speaker 2Yeah, it'll be interesting to see which way they do go. But there you go. Let's hope we can make some money today.
Speaker 17Bendigo. Absolutely, Gareth. Time in, mate. And, yeah, good track. The weather's beautiful.
Speaker 2Just get on jig racing as well. You've been seeing them beautifully right across the country, across all codes as well. So, yep, the way to go in the spring.
Speaker 17Beautiful, Gareth. Yep, you can jump on. You can actually, for the next 30 days, you can get it for a dollar. There's no lock-in fees or anything. So, you get the entire spring. We've got Warwick Farm, Eagle Farm, which I've got a professional punter who looks after all Sydney and Queensland. And then I've got the Kennel King, who's just been our number one assassin in recent times. He goes under an Elias, and he won't be mentioned. But he's striking them very well, Gareth. And you can probably put the dots together if you read some of his form.
Speaker 2Yes, yes, yes. I think I know who it is, but I might not give him up just yet. I will give him up one day, I reckon. Good on you, Josh. Thanks for that, mate.
Speaker 17Thanks, Gareth. Cheers, mate.
Speaker 2There's Josh McLaughlin there. Time for a break. That is Bag of Tips. As we go to the break, I don't know if we've got Wagering Wednesday ready to go. Abby Sanderson does a great job. She catches up with all the harness racing drivers at Shepparton on a Tuesday night, and they give out their best drives for the rest of the week. And they've got a pretty good strike rate of identifying some paces and trotters that we should be backing this week. Here is Wagering Wednesday with Abby Sanderson.
Speaker 18Welcome back to another Wagering Wednesday. Things are looking slightly different this week. Instead of our usual Tuesday night race meeting, we're actually racing tonight. So we thought, why not get everyone involved and have all of our tips centred around tonight's racing at Shepparton. A massive thank you to all of the amazing sports who jumped on board and shared their tips with us. And to, of course, our wonderful sponsors in Willowwood Farms. Thank you for your ongoing support. As always, happy punting and gamble responsibly. And remember, there is no better place on a Tuesday or sometimes even Wednesday night than the Shepparton Harness Racing Club.
Speaker 19Hi, it's Darren Carroll. Excellent nights racing at Shepparton. And my tip coming up in race five, and it's number five, Lather Me Up. It's a two-year-old taking on the older horses, but it's first up, Alex Ashwood. And he's got a great record when he produces them first up. And this is a two-year-old that's racing in much better company. And I expect to come with one run and be really quick and two good late.
Speaker 20Good luck. My best tip is to come with one run for Shepparton. Comes up in race number six, horse number one, Our Sweet Jeannie. She'll absolutely love getting back to this class. Has been racing some of the better quality three-year-olds through the elite futurity races here in Victoria. I think she's got the speed to kick up from the inside. She'll have a little bit of opposition from out wide, but I think she'll get the best position. And she's going to be the hardest to beat on the night. For me, race six, number one, Our Sweet Jeannie. Hey guys, my best for tonight comes up in race seven, number five, Jasper Jay for Dave Farrah. I think it looks like a real winnable race and it should be able to handle the others in it.
Speaker 21Me and Billy will have something to say about that, I think. Race seven, number six, Millie's boy. Got a little bit to learn. Has trial wealth. Expecting a good run. G'day, it's Andy Gath here. Been doing the form for Shepparton on Wednesday night. And my best bet is race four, number two, Shanky Warrior for Albie Ashwood. So two runs for the stable for a win. And a second and a close look into my two-year-old had a first start at Melton last week. Catcher captain, which is Andy Gath. Which we have a pretty high opinion of. So what is quite a difficult race. I thought it could probably find the top over the short. And yeah, I know Albie's got another one in. Another two-year-old that goes okay. But I thought if it found the pegs first, it'd be pretty hard to beat. So a Shanky Warrior is my best bet at Shepparton on Wednesday. And what looks like a pretty good betting meeting. So hopefully everyone bets up and enjoys the night.
Speaker 22Thank you. Hey everyone, it's Abby Sanderson here. It's cool to be on the other side of the camera this week. Bringing you my best bet for the night ahead is race seven, number four, which is first up for the stable. A little bit of a sticky gate for it, but I think if she does everything right and gets a good spot, she should be running on mate.
Speaker 1Tune in to Racing WA TV on 7 Plus. Your ultimate destination for everything racing. Racing in the West on SEN Track. This is the best from the West. And hello to you, Darren McCauley.
Speaker 23Good morning, Gareth. Nice to join you again here on this Wednesday as always. Ahead of the Belmont Park meeting today, but of course surrounded in so much excitement and so much pure race day joy that we experienced last weekend.
Speaker 2Yeah. Where would you rate that day amongst the better days in WA racing history? There last Saturday, Cobb?
Speaker 23Well, I think we have to go back to the early 2000s. Gareth, when Northerly was certainly at the peak of his powers and dominating over there in Victoria and of course had won a Caulfield Cup and then claimed effortlessly a Cox Plate. I think that day there, the pride that we felt when he carried the weight that he did to win the Caulfield Cup and we all sensed that when he went to the Valley a week later, he would have, he would absolutely give them a shellacking and that's exactly what he did and one of the easiest wins you'd ever see in a Cox Plate. So I think probably since then, the pure unbridled joy and satisfaction of watching him and I think more so with Willie getting a Group 1 Cox Plate on the board. We know how good he is. We know how popular he is nationally, but to be able to do that and with Bob Peters, who did give him a big leg up when he was a young kid, when he was first starting out, and he gave him the leg up on, I think a horse called Crown Prosecutor way, way back and they've been together despite the different sort of ups and downs that everyone goes through in racing, but they've stuck staunch and it was great to see Bob. I think, show another side to him. We know that at times Bob's got a perception that the softest part of him is his teeth, but it's not necessarily always the case. He does. He does hold a lot of his emotion internally. Yes. And I think that he just felt that it was such an overwhelming day to win the Cox Plate. It meant so much to him and then I think what he made comment of after the race that it was lovely to do it with Willie. Yeah. And I think that was a special moment, Gareth.
Speaker 2And we're just watching the replay on racing.com. It was an amazing victory. He was last as they swung for home and he gave some good horses a start and he got past Elian. He went straight past Charwolf. He went straight past Souto. He went straight past Bedelius and then gets past Birdman when it matters most. His seventh run this campaign, but it was a brave ride by Pikey and we've mentioned this on a few occasions this week. That's the way that you need to ride him. Let him do what he wants to do at the start, regardless of where you are and then trust him when it matters most.
Speaker 23Well, I did say that virtually verbatim weeks ago. You did, didn't you, Cobb? When he came in for unnecessary criticism and I think it was from people that didn't know the horse and didn't know how they're trained and how. The owner likes to have them ridden, quite frankly. So, look, it was a beautiful ride, patient ride. He's had the benefit of going around there at Flemington and I did make the comment on Friday evening on media over here and I couldn't believe the price that they were letting everyone on with Cosmic Crusader. He'd beaten virtually the same field in his previous run there at Flemington. There wasn't much of a difference in weight and I couldn't believe the price. So, good luck to those that finished up getting $10, some even, I think, eked a little better than $10 in some quarters with the corporates and he delivered a result we were very confident that he would. So, wonderful story from WA. In fact, you know, he is only,
Speaker 9I think, about the fourth WA horse
Speaker 23to have won the race. It goes back to 23, easing while Hall of Fame, horse here from another time and era. Aquanita in 62. Northerly, of course, won a couple. And they're now Cosmic Crusader. So only four WA horses have won the race since 1922. And only four WA-born jockeys have won the race as well. Pike adding his name to that list of Damien Lane, Damien Oliver. Ollie's won a couple of times, of course. And Frank Tiger Moore, who came in back there in the 60s.
Speaker 2And so he goes to the champion stakes. But I just can, I'm just closing my eyes now, Cobb, and I'm just visualising what could happen there on Northerly Stakes Day. We get to see Cosmic Crusader, and this is in a perfect world. Cosmic Crusader, Buckaroo and Pride of Jenny. Imagine Pride of Jenny taking off down the back there, Cobb, and Cosmic Crusader chasing her down. They should pack out the joint if that happens. I'd be disappointed if they didn't pack out the joint.
Speaker 23They're packing it out. We saw 9,000 go to the races there for a Belgravia meeting on the weekend. Now, I know that it was Irish day. And when it's Irish day, they support it like no other. But there was, I think, maybe an excess of 9,000 people. And the beautiful thing about Ascot on Saturday, when Cosmic Crusader won, and let's not forget too, that it had come off the back of Smooth, Chino, and Austin, Ghilardi, and Indiana Wine, winning the McEwen Stakes a little earlier. That also drew an enormous response. But the chant for Pikey around the course,
Speaker 17they just stood
Speaker 23back and took it all in. And they were up and about from underneath where I broadcast that top-level member's deck to the next tier, the mezzanine, to the ground floor, and all the surrounds. There was this chant for Pikey, Pikey, Pikey, reverberating around the course. And that there gets. That he is standing up on the back of your neck, no matter what.
Speaker 2So he will come to Perth for the Northerly. People go, I don't know, Bob's only saying that. No, he's not. He'll be there. And Mickey Grantham will train him. A few text messages coming through. Andrea Leak's done the job in Victoria, but she knows that she trains the Victorian horses, and Mick Grantham trains Bob's WA horses. Yeah. So that will be the case, and that will be terrific for WA to have the Cox Plate Champ rock up for the carnival. I think Northerly tried to do it, but finished midfield. Behind old Comrade, who went on to win the Australian Cup, and again, beat Northerly, one of Bob's horses there in the autumn. So it's going to add a lot to the carnival to have the Cox Plate Champion back in WA. And then Smoochino, Indiana White Ant, she's done a wonderful job. She's relocated from Albany to Gawler in South Australia, and she's travelled that horse twice, was very good first up down that straight, and then beats a pretty handy field into McEwen, which included the Quokka. Winner in Jigsaw Mazu. He was able to get past in the last hundred, and Austin Ghilardi. We had a chat to him yesterday, and geez, he's a good kid. He's a fantastic kid. Yeah, he's a good kid, and he loves WA, but he loves that horse, and he's embraced the opportunity. Obviously, he's been under a lot of pressure as well, and he answered all of those critics. He had a few critics, to be honest, heading towards Saturday, and he was able to get the job done. Well, the reveries, they were racing, aren't they?
Speaker 23Yeah, they are. I'm a dozen critics. They're just there, and that's fine. It's all part of the fabric, but it's the tale of two different riding careers where Willie has been the king. He is, in my view, and will always be, the greatest, most successful. His record will suggest that we will ever see here. Then opposite to that, you get Austin Ghilardi. Austin, taller, lankier, through an unconventional type of an apprenticeship where he had to, you know, eke his craft up there in the northwest of the state, broom, when he got a go on, had a bad leg injury, broke a leg, didn't get enough winners to ride on a Saturday at Ascot or Belmont as an apprentice. He just failed. He couldn't get a ride on a Saturday. And despite the protestations of many, because there was a dearth of claiming apprentices at the time, and we know that Austin could ride very capably, they wouldn't budge from the number that they'd established before you could go and ride on a Saturday. And yet, one day after, he could go and ride on a Saturday. I mean, the ridiculousness of that was just so obvious. And now, all of a sudden, he's riding winners in Melbourne. So, you know, good things come to those that wait. I thought he was denied opportunity as an apprentice. And not only is he a very, very talented, you know, not high-awaited, but he's a bit Stevie Arbel-like in his stature. And, you know, when he gets down and he crouches down and he's perfected his craft more and more and more, and he clearly has a great understanding of smooth G-note because he's had 10 rides on him and won seven, he's just developing. But he's not only developing as a jockey, but he's always at heart been a really good young bloke, as you've pointed out there. He's been awfully likeable and, you know, success will continue to come his way. Now, whether or not he remains in WA, well, that's another story. You know, he might decide to seek opportunities. I did ask him that yesterday.
Speaker 2And I think Indiana Wynette's desperate to get him to South Australia. Like, they had a double there at Strathalby before he headed to Melbourne. That's right. To ride smooth channel to victory. But I did ask him that question. He's a million to one to move from WA. And I don't think he wants to. I think he's established himself there. It's taken him a long time, as you pointed out, to get the confidence of owners and trainers. And he set himself up. And despite the lure to go and work for Indiana Wynette in South Australia, which he would get plenty of opportunities, he's going to be staying in WA. So there you go.
Speaker 23And we'll be very happy to keep him here as well because he had some depth. He's a jockey that works very hard. He'll pick his saddles up and he'll go anywhere for a ride. Yeah. And I think both boys, in fact, Pikey started his career up there too. Jack Copley used to drag him up to some of those far-flung Northwest Pilbara Gasco and type meetings. And that's where they became horsemen. Not just jockeys, but horsemen. And a lot of the times there's a comparative difference between great jockeys, good jockeys, and then lesser talented jockeys. But these boys have cut their teeth out. They've got to keep their teeth out there before they can certainly, in Willy's case, made it to the big time the way that he has.
Speaker 2Well, you didn't leave Cobwen. You had so many opportunities. So why should Austin? Well, that's right.
Speaker 23There's a lot to like about living in WA. Yeah. Why would you want to leave? Why would you want to leave WA?
Speaker 2Anyway, Asian Bow Stakes and the Prince of Wales Stakes. We've got the Placid Arc Prelude as well, which sees the five Gidgey Coles. You've got Talk & Co back at the races, Oscars, Fortune back at the races. Pissonella. Yeah. Pissonella is an interesting runner, first up for the Kenjimis. And then in the Asian Bow, Bonjoy, Hot N High, Hot N High, Bustler, Western Miss. So it's a great program there, Cob.
Speaker 23Yeah. Terrific racing at the moment. Hot N High, of course, going for, what, her eighth out of nine for Dion and Aspirations, of course, to just get this rating up higher and higher. She's a dual stakes winner now, but she still needs to get up in that hundred plus range. To really earn a ticket there to go to the Railway Stakes, which she's very confident that she will do. Bonjoy was sensational in her return in the Eurasic behind King of Light. She's second up, got a phenomenal record. Four wins from a six second up goes, and Hot N High's no slouch either, undefeated second up in her preparation. The run of Awesome Boy was a monster in the same race to Hot N High there that day, too. Whether he can reproduce that remains to be seen, but it was great to see a horse of his ability produce something like that. What he did in the Crawford at Planet Suite, the run. You've mentioned the other races there, the Prince of Wales and Co. And of course, we keep seeing these four year olds, and I keep sort of harping on about them, but the depth of our four year olds is at a level I haven't seen for many a long day. Basset Hound on the weekend, too, Gareth.
Speaker 2Second favorite for the weekend. For the winter bottom.
Speaker 23Overreaction? Look, I personally think that he's six to 12 months away from physically being matured. I really do. I think it's a great story. He was bought as a result, or he evolved as a result of the same trip that Peter Walsh went on to buy the dam of Amelia's Jewel on that great trip to Royal Ascot with us that year. He finished up going to the TAP sale in Newmarket. Bought that near-bound copy, and she's a great granddaughter of Tommy Smith's Golden Slipper winning champion, Philly, inbounding away. So he's got a link to a great Australian Philly, Basset Hound, by the all-faded wooden Basset. But they couldn't get a bid for him in the sale ring. It's extraordinary. Yet he's such a beautiful looking animal, but he will continue to blossom, and no doubt with maturity, develop into a horse. A wonderful horse for these connections. He's already a wonderful horse for them. But it's a good story. This one's starting to evolve, and he's got a big following, the Basset Hound. um another one that we can have a bit of fun with yeah it's one five of eight
Speaker 2roger and the basset hound going head to head you won't know yourself
Speaker 23cob oh can't wait can't wait we've got some stars over here emerging and he certainly is one of them so uh mate mate maybe if you want to breed a good horse maybe you've got to come to royal ascot with us just ask walsh i think it's turned into about a 20 million dollar exercise
Speaker 2okay and so how do we get tickets to go with you to royal ascot cob give them
Speaker 23my number all right oh do you
Speaker 2do you really want me to give your number out on air oh no no well you're begging us victorians saying we've got no idea all the time cob your phone will go off i don't say
Speaker 23that i don't say that you've got no idea i just think sometimes comments are real judge that's what i'm saying yes yes we love you brother unfounded well you
Speaker 2look after your eye um and we appreciate you coming on the show as always you're not calling today again you're having
Speaker 23uh i'll be there no i'll be up yeah where i'd park the peepers as bruised and battered as they are through the 10 by 50s on the weekend uh we've got uh we've got a couple of big meetings today northern tomorrow's last meeting for this season uh that meeting you've touched upon on saturday and then of course the manning bowling club monday night gareth oh the calcutta yeah the most famous the biggest in perth will be down there timmy walker will be there
Speaker 2how is good on timmy walker used to host the sports daily of course in wa it was a great show diggers and um and i used to go down there when i was doing the sports daily with you used to yeah he used to get paid and i did an unbelievable cop he was he used to run the show yeah and a few
Speaker 23big names from the afl world are getting down there that have come from the area where we all live so we'll be down there on monday night it's the best bang for your buck and the big big pool for the melbourne cup it's part of the tradition well
Speaker 2go and buy james j brady can you can't go wrong darren you'll be right
Speaker 23thank you i will take any tip i can because i haven't quite got a handle on many of these horses made in the melbourne cup so far you go
Speaker 2and get them today we appreciate your time as always always
Speaker 23good to talk with you there's
Speaker 2darren mccall the legend tune into racing wa tv on seven plus and racing.com your ultimate destination for everything racing in the west and scotty embry at belmont today likes race four number four reginetta and lacey marie race two number three so that's five four two three the great molly haynes from grv she's joining georgie ferugia and they'll be having a chat to us and they can explain what's happening without a trace after we had the top gun fields announced there um recently this is giddy up all things to bet three six five join the
Speaker 1conversation text us on oh four double nine seven three six seven three six live across australia this is giddy up with gareth hall so time for the weekly chase with jason adams and george ferugia let's
Speaker 2welcome
Speaker 1in the team
Speaker 2georgie ferugia hello to you g'day mate how are you and we've got an upgrade i don't know where jace adams is because he's picking i would imagine the top gun field he didn't want us to hammer him with these questions did he just he thought trainers were going to be out the front waiting for him why is my dog not picked yes what a replacement molly haynes hello to you long time no see molly but um i've been watching from afar you've been dominating great to have you back on the show
Speaker 24thank you very much now i've come out of retirement um an early retirement come back out and i thought why not jump at the opportunity to get on with uh you and george but jason's actually doing me a solid he's gone to cranbourne for a very big announcement down there and i said well can you announce it here what's happening at cranbourne i can so cranbourne greyhounds will be up and running so the racing minister or the minister sorry has just announced on the 25th of december november sorry so wednesday the 25th of november cranbourne will have their first meeting back so it's a pretty big announcement for the area it's a very highly populated region there's over 200 trainers that are in that cranbourne region and they've got the second highest number of dogs so i think it's very well welcomed and there's lots of good reports on the tracks after three weeks trialing
Speaker 2yeah and so that tracks inside the harness track so it's you got the gallops you got the trots and you've got the dogs there now the tricota the tricota and they have they'll have um neil bainbridge and his team at south side racing they'll have a tricode meeting
Speaker 25absolutely fingers crossed but to to harp on molly's point i have heard trainers trial there and they seem to think that the um circumference of the track and everything seems to be going really well so why was it shut
Speaker 24down there were safety concerns around the the surface so that was i want to say it was 2020 feels like 23 it was a long time a long time coming um but no it is really really exciting news for the region and the nolan so they came to the golf day that we had to launch the dream chasers festival and they said that they're happy to put wrongly accused around there that's how happy they are with the track so that's huge wrongly accused the greyhound that got
Speaker 2taken out of garrett's arms for the phoenix you know what i'm happy they should change his name back to um um organized crime because i tell you that like i thought he was stolen from us from sports bet but they can have him now he's too risky shots fired i like well he's too risky well how can you have him now george he keeps getting into trouble and missing the start please they've gone far too early the sports bet team i know that they've won it before a couple of times but they've jumped the gun look
Speaker 25you you make an interesting point um because there's a little bit maybe i'm jumping the gun with this comment but is there a fork in the road moment here where um he is finding a little bit of trouble in certain races over 500 meters um a little bit of
Speaker 2trouble he keeps getting knocked down because he's got no speed and then he's in all sorts of trouble so he'll need a ton of
Speaker 25luck he's got speed but he yeah he's he's confidence no look at the adelaide cup he got dragged down from behind yeah probably the one you put a line through is the one at the meadows but um he might end up being those greyhounds that we've seen in the past molly like a tim zoo and a mapunga reward and a cumbria jack who applied their trade over 600 as well and then come back to 500 he seems to be one of those greyhounds who he's got so many big fish to fry in the next two months three months so we might not see that but we might see him over 600 because everybody's always known his back end is his best isn't he like he's just incredible run home
Speaker 24dog yeah absolutely look i i don't think sports vet have made the wrong decision i think it was silly of them not to silly of anyone not to have made that call yeah he's still one of
Speaker 25the best greyhounds in the country oh
Speaker 24without a doubt and look not all yeah not all of the best dogs have won the phoenix i mean jack smith got on the phone to me the other day and he said what about a magpie hector in the phoenix situation but i suppose it's similar to you he's not doing his best work he'll be out the back with
Speaker 2wrongly accused anyway but you know what
Speaker 25he'll be running home this is well you can't have it started beautifully here with well you can't
Speaker 2have it you they've gone too early he could have he like he could lose his confidence now after getting um interfered with at the start he's not a brilliant beginner they're gonna go quick but he'll have to he'll have to jump over them over the first turn like that winner of um jason thompson explicit explicit but did he jump over them in a melbourne cup or he missed
Speaker 25trouble by an absolute yeah um so this i'm not downing his ability i'm not
Speaker 2downing his ability i'm just downing his his racecraft this leads us into the top gun he is so
Speaker 24young he has so much to learn and he can do that so quickly like working with him at the um dream chasers launch he is the ultimate professional he was as calm as a cucumber uh like he was an outstanding i'm
Speaker 2happy with our strategy
Speaker 25there's no better timing than the top gun to be on now because otherwise they might have given him a time but he's going to be in a group one race you'd suggest um and we get to see him against the best seven other greyhounds so it's a it's a little bit of a preview to what we might see in
Speaker 2the phoenix 42 minutes past 11 george he's got his top gun fields for us he's going to reveal them next here on giddy up join the
Speaker 1conversation text us on 0 4 9 7 3 6 7 3 6 live across australia this is giddy up with gareth hall
Speaker 2back to giddy up now time to reveal georgie fridge's top gun field um don't forget a few years back he did leave out well she's fast he went on to win a phoenix so georgie
Speaker 25on the top gun panel i don't know who left who left well she's fast
Speaker 2out then who was on the panel well i don't know who was on the panel but you agree you agree with him
Speaker 25because at that stage and we can mention this and preface this before i mention my tips my tips my selections um that stage it was based on purely pretty much on group racing it was yeah there's a few nice little
Speaker 24inclusions to make sure the best current dogs are able to get into this field now should i get into
Speaker 25it yes in no apparent order apart from being alphabetical um we'll go the top gun stays first these are my eight amron toy aiden's warrior beautiful child electrify magpie hector mapungalara miss envy and sin city bandit would be my eight um um jason on our show on our podcast last week said come together with a field of greyhounds that would be the best spectacle and i had without a trace in that field because i think at her best she would be great for the race but gareth i don't know what the panel are thinking but if they if they're going to go off um this this new system it's really hard to have her in the field for mine she's won three of the last 14 she hasn't won a race in town since may it feels like it's been the tale of two careers i mean she burst onto the scene one for group one races there were a long time ago And then she's had her struggles here. Now, Peter Prosciutto has been in the game a long time. He's a terrific trainer, really experienced. Physically, she's fine. And she's trialing at the Meadows tonight along with a beautiful child. It's a mental thing for me, I think. And we talk about her at her best, Molly, where she jumped to the front and go really well. But I've mentioned this on radio before. When she was at her best, her run home times were as good as Magpie Hector's. She'd break 11 seconds on the run home at 700 metres at Sandow, which is, you know, only 10 dogs would do for the year. So she's losing it at the front end and the back end. And it might be controversial. But I just think some of those dogs I mentioned, guys, like Amron Toy had a purple patch recently. He was in form, ran second to Mapunga Hector in a group race. Aidan's Warrior won a Sandow Cup. He ran second in a Sydney Cup heat behind. And he's been in amazing form. So on current form, they have to go through. Beautiful child's the best stayer in Queensland. Electrify on pure ability, I think he's got to be in it and has been in okay form. Magpie Hector picks himself. Mapunga Lara has made nine Group 1 finals this year. So it's hard to leave her out. And she's won one of those. Miss Envy, your girl. And since City Bandits run behind Magpie Hector in the Sydney Cup in a time where he nearly broke the track record, I think she needs to get in as well. So they're my eight. So it'll be interesting to see. Hard to argue. Hard to argue, Molly.
Speaker 24See, I would still be putting without a tracing because I'm for the story. I'm for making my life as a promoter of greyhound racing. Racing easy. And her story is spectacular, whether it's, you know, the prosciuttos themselves or whether it's her domination that she's been able to achieve. I feel like I'd be putting her in over Mapunga Lara. And I'm saying that about some of my very, very good friends.
Speaker 2You might have to go through the archives, as Georgie pointed out, to find her last victory. Like, it's too far back, isn't it?
Speaker 24But it can still happen. I think with females especially when you can just switch back on.
Speaker 25Do you honestly, like, again, take nothing away from her legacy? She's a greyhound of the year. She's a star. There's no doubt about it. I may never have a greyhound that good being an owner. But could you genuinely think she could win that race if she was in it?
Speaker 24Yep. The way she's going? Yes, I do.
Speaker 2What price will she be if she gets in that field?
Speaker 24I think she's like the, I think she's tab in sports, but everyone's worst nightmare when it comes to putting money on her. I think they keep her under. I really do. Generally, don't they? Because you just, you could not get caught having her at Big Odds. She seems disinterested. She could be, what, $7, $8, guys?
Speaker 25Yeah. At a pinch. And I reckon she's racing like a 20, 25 to one shot.
Speaker 24I tell you what, Magpie Hector's an interesting one, though. Purely from the fact he's got a new get up arriving to the meadows next Saturday night if he gets in. Jack Smith was telling me that he took his four-month-old granddaughter for a walk along the streets. He was looking after her. Just dropped into the BMW shop, bought himself a BMW, and that's how they'll be arriving
Speaker 2to the Top Gun.
Speaker 24If he is to get a run.
Speaker 2Well, if he turns up, looks like he knows what he's doing now, Magpie Hector. He just jumps in speed and blows them away, Georgie. I was going to say, have you had a conversation with Jack about,
Speaker 25is this the exception or the rule? Because he's really cleaned up his racing in the last three or four starts where he's put himself in a position to be one-two. And before Gareth punches me in the face, if he's close enough to miss Envy with that new sustained early speed, he will beat her. Yeah. But he doesn't want to get. He doesn't want to get too far back. So has Jack spoken about the early speed that he's shown, like in his last two runs?
Speaker 24Oh, he's just stoked with the dog. I think it's funny. I struggle to get Jack off the phone, and I love having a conversation with him. But when he's talking about the dog, it's straight down the line. The dog's going really well. He's trialling well. And he's in with a shot. So much so, he wants a Phoenix slot.
Speaker 2Yeah, well. That's interesting. Well, if he's got my number, I'd give him a 30-70 deal, Magpie Hector.
Speaker 24I reckon you should be putting him on the spot right now and giving him a call. Yeah. We might give him a call, actually.
Speaker 2I'll have to talk to the boss, Troy Little, but we'll do all of that after this break. And we've got the Top Gun Sprinters field that Georgie Farage is ready to reveal. This is his field, not the official field, but he's got that much of a say that probably we'll copy him. And it'll be interesting to see if they do go without a trace there in the Top Gun, which will be announced tomorrow by Corey Smith. More of the Weekly Chase next here on Giddy Up.
Speaker 1Live across Australia, this is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 2Welcome back to Giddy Up, Gareth Hall, with your thanks to Bet365. Georgie Farage is with me, along with Molly Haynes. Your Top Gun field for the Sprinters, Georgie.
Speaker 25Yeah, I'm going to go alphabetical order, but I'm going to leave the last choice, which really just was a head-scratcher for me, and you might have different opinions. But. The ones, the seven I think should be in are Kenya Mayhem, Jungle Johnny, Mapunga Reward, Off the Chart, Storm Hustler, Winsome Jet, and Wrongly Incused. And the last one was really tough for me. I ended up siding with Kenya Excite Me. She won the Sandgroper. Her form recently has been okay without being outstanding. She ran second in two Country Cups more recently. She's a flyer. But you could fill that last spot, I think, Molly, with a few of them. But they are my eight.
Speaker 24Molly? Yeah, look, I don't disagree. I think you've done a pretty good job there.
Speaker 25Now, I know you were mentioning off here, Kenya Talk Now is another one who's.
Speaker 24He probably just hasn't done enough. Like, he is a spectacular dog. Yeah. But he probably hasn't done enough Top Gun-wise. But Phoenix-wise, which I think is where, as a party's thinking, I just.
Speaker 25Yeah. But again, what are we doing with the. What are the panel thinking? Does he have enough X-Factor where they say, you know what? We're going to roll the dice here. I mean, this is. This is the. Part of the new selection process, I guess, is going to make it very interesting.
Speaker 24Yeah. Yeah. No, it will. And I think especially. You learn so much from a dog when they're beaten. And we spoke about his stand-down run last week or the week before. And it was huge. Yeah, it was a good run. He got held wide. He was lucky to keep his feet. He has a huge motor. And I haven't heard Anthony get up and about about a dog like this in a long time. We were going to interview him.
Speaker 2Yeah, he could have started his case. He might miss out now. He missed out on that opportunity. Troy Little's. Troy Little's about to join us. So have you got some tips tomorrow with the Preludes for the Melbourne Cup?
Speaker 25Yeah, Ripper Preludes. Just quickly wanted to mention Race 7. We've got Mapunga Reward versus Paul Roswold versus Croydon. Corey Lee Heinrich's got three or four greyhounds who started their career in Ireland and are having their second race start in Australia. Wow. I'm really looking forward to those greyhounds. Some of their times, I did some research at Shelbourne Park, were very, very fast. So it'll be interesting to see if that resonates here in Australia. Race 8, number one, Aston Machine, I think, will be tough to beat, drawn really well. Sparring's very short. He should go well as well. And we got one later in the program. Race 12, number one, Dewana Missile, I think will be hard to beat.
Speaker 2Beautiful. And Geelong and Derby Oaks finals?
Speaker 25Yeah, well, we spoke about Kenya Talk now. Obviously he'll be tough to beat. The Oaks are a little bit more open, although the greyhounds that Geoff Britton trains went really well last week. Mapunga Willow? Yeah, Mapunga Willow.
Speaker 24The battle between Mapunga Willow and Reality Secret was huge.
Speaker 2525-40, so only about a length and a half behind what Kenya Talk now ran.
Speaker 24Yeah, so that's on Friday night at Geelong. But I do just quickly want to mention tonight on Sky 2, so the Beautiful Child and Without a Trace exhibition trial. So after Race 3, Beautiful Child, after Race 4, Without a Trace, and they will be shown on Sky 2. So a big thank you to Sky for letting us do that.
Speaker 2Hopefully Georgie's watching Without a Trace after he's just potted her today. Troy Little joins us. G'day, Troy. Hey, Gee.
Speaker 26Hey, guys. How are we?
Speaker 2Would you have with us? Without a Trace in the Top Gun?
Speaker 26No, thank you.
Speaker 2Yeah. Yeah, we're on the, like Molly would, but we're potting Without a Trace. She'll probably win now by five. Now, tell me this, Troy. Who are we picking for the Phoenix?
Speaker 26Well, I'm just going through the top sort of 15 on the market here, and there's a lot of beaten up dogs here, and a lot of dogs are jury out. Oh, no. I'm looking left field. I want something to come really left field in the next sort of few weeks and coming up to Melbourne Cup. Okay. And something might produce, and we might pounce then.
Speaker 2What kind of deal are we doing? 30, 70, 20, 80? Make Pi Hector we could get for 10, 90, I reckon.
Speaker 2610, 90. Well, he trolled good over the short, so he wouldn't be totally out of it.
Speaker 2Should we give him a call next week?
Speaker 26No, no. He'll be out the back in the Phoenix. He'll be too far out the back. But I'll tell you what, it's wide open. Yeah. It's really, really wide open, and anything, any young dog can come through in the next month and really steal. They'll stamp themselves in the top few, so it's interesting times.
Speaker 25Troy, what's your- I've got 30 seconds. Sorry, what's your 1A, 1B here? Is it early speed to get out to the front, and then maybe some Meadows Exposed form for the grounds you're looking at?
Speaker 26Perfect. A and B, George, but I'm a huge Meadows fan, so if a dog's got form, track, and trip, you can't really go wrong. You're going to get a great run for your money, aren't you?
Speaker 2Good on you, Troy. Thanks, brother. We'll catch up next week. There's Troy Little. Mitchell Connors, of course, the superstar young trainer. And Sidney wants a greyhound. He wants to buy a greyhound. So, Georgie, we'll get in contact with you, mate, and away you go. Thank you, Molly.
Speaker 24Thank you very much for having me. Thank you, Georgie. Thank you, mate.
Speaker 2Thanks for your company. We'll be back for a massive show, especially for Giddy Up Stable Mail ahead of Derby Day tomorrow.
