Speaker 2that's tracking really well for a nice spring porter's one of my favorite horses in your stable i love the way how he makes his own luck but he hasn't got a great first up record danny can he improve on that look we've given him a lot of good results and he's got a lot of good results
Speaker 3three trials but you're right he's always that races right on speed and and makes the running so generally improves out of a run or two um as i said we've got him as forward as we can be without running him but you'd have to be wary on his first up record if they go too hard can think so be competitive uh look he's been super competitive in everything he's running this time in uh he's because of that he's had to step up in grade and you know this is this is probably the strongest race he's ever contested but uh he's got a lot of good results and he's got a lot of good results
Speaker 2he's racing really well what do we make of your seamus award philia thera now she won at a big prize on the boot flemington on a heavy track but um gee she was impressive like she raced um like she was should have been a short price favorite she blitzed her rivals on that day
Speaker 3um how good is she yeah well that that's you know the thing that gives you plenty of um hope that there is a good motive there she went to that race you know really just to have an education style run um not particularly over prepared for it you know she had a couple little trials with no pressure put on her um but she turned up that day and really salvaged the line so she's certainly a lot more forward for us now you know she's had a lot more experience since she trialed down the straight she trialed in that trial against the good horses on race day there two weeks ago so um whatever she showed us at flemington in june there's a lot more advanced you know experience wise since then um she's taking on some you know better three-year-olds for sure than what she took on at flemington but we have got some aspirations that she's got more than her share of ability and the firmer track there on saturday yeah don't worry wet or dry you know she she looks to have enough talent to take it to whatever surface could she be a thousand guineas horse we're hopeful you know it's um it's that time of the year where you run them and you
Speaker 2find out and she's in that category that's appeal this is her biggest test i guess on saturday
Speaker 3yeah the bar keeps raising for her because um she's got a lot of experience and she's got a lot of experience and she keeps winning you know that's a good problem to have she's she's up three kilos from her first up win at flemington um but she's taken natural improvement from that yeah this was always a a race we had in mind to potentially give us a springboard into the group one in three weeks time so um we'll go there with no excuses you know she had a really soft dish win first up she's had a jump out of the heath there 10 days ago um she's going to present in great shape on
Speaker 2saturday and gold coast bell was very good you know she's got a lot of experience and she's got a lot of the other so you think mary in your stable last week no exactly she hasn't done much wrong either
Speaker 3she's she's sort of won four in a row and seven starts five wins they're both building very impressive records and and they're both mares now that should get better as the season progresses

Speaker 3uh i think i just stick with what you know you're going to get which is sass appeal she's going to bounce put herself outside leader um you know she she's a very progressive horse and she's going to give you a great sight so that's race 10 number 11 and i think it's seymour today uh they're just all first uppers on on wet ground so we're just hoping that they kick off with nice runs really all right then geelong geelong bit similar um probably paris wins actually if it's first emergency but if it gets a run uh there tomorrow she's drawn well she's got damien lane on board she she's probably one that's a good each way chance so that's race

Speaker 5What's the cut-off day that you've got to decide Everest or King Charles because they're two different preparations?
Speaker 4I guess probably three weeks, the lead-up run. If you're going to Everest, you're probably going to a Scirocco or something like that. If you're going to King Charles, you might have time to go to Melbourne for a race like the Maccabi Diva. I'd say in the next week, we'll make a decision for sure and let everybody know at the same time.
Speaker 2That's Chris Waller now. You get refunded if it's – or she's not in the first official nominations for the Maccabi Diva. So she's $5 at the moment. The way I read that, Paulie Sebastiani, I don't know if you're hearing the same thing that I was hearing, that if she goes down the Everest path, she'll go to the Scirocco, it looks like, then to the Everest. If she goes down the King Charles path, there's a strong chance she could come to the Maccabi Diva.
Speaker 6So you're saying back her for the Maccabi Diva stakes, hope that they don't nominate for that race. And then you get your money back because if they do go down that path, she always start $5. What price would she start if she goes down? She'd be odds on.
Speaker 2Yeah. So if she goes – if they say they're going to the Everest, you'll get your money back. The only concern I would have if they do say they're going to the King Charles, there is another option for Chris Waller, and that is the seven stakes. And that's been a traditional lead-up that he's used with other horses like Fangirl. So it just caught my eye there or it pricked my ears that when he mentioned the Maccabi Diva, but I don't know, as I said. But you'd have $20 on it. Chris Waller as a trainer.
Speaker 6She's short everywhere else in the country. I think with the tabs, she's 280. Chris Waller as a trainer, do you see him with horses like this more going to the mile? I mean, he's trained incredible sprinters over the last couple of years, but in my estimation, he's always been the premier mile-to-middle-distance trainer in Australia, arguably the world. He, in my estimation, will go down the mile path. I think that's what he's going to do.
Speaker 2Yeah, well, who knows? I'm hearing both sides here. Twice. There's a chance he'll go to the Everest and there's a chance he'll go to the King Charles. Twice, number one. Have you got Pete Moody's grab from his podcast, Moody on the Mic? Yes, of course. This is what Moody's had to say to Mitho and Roger Aldridge on Moody on the Mic yesterday, which was also, I think, pretty interesting.
Speaker 7We got our pants pulled down. We got beaten fair and square by a better horse without excuse. So that's life. We went, we tried, we didn't conquer, but we lived to fight another day. I'll have to assess it. My filly, when we see a few more of the horses come out that might be running in the Golden Eagle, is my filly going to be sharp enough or good enough to win it, that race at 1500? Or do we seriously put the Cox Plate back on the agenda, thinking that she might tell us she wants 2,000 metres this time round because we're still learning each and every time. But we certainly won't dodge Autumn Glow going forward. But we'll just sort of pick our mark and place it where we think she's best suited. And if that involves taking on Autumn Glow, so be it.
Speaker 2So there you go. It was just a Golden Eagle last week. This week, it's the Cox Plate that may be your chance. So that's the beauty about Australian racing. There's so many different options. You can let your horse tell you where they think they should be going. So yeah, the Cox Plate may be a chance. Probably a small chance, but still now. This is obviously tougher there in Melbourne on Saturday race three, number nine. I'm speaking off here. Yeah. These races start to get stronger now as we draw closer to spring, but, um, look, that was his first opportunity at his right trip and he got back to good ground, which really
Speaker 9helped him. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, he's got a good team, beautiful ride. Uh, they went very quick in front and he ran a good overall rating. So it was a good performance. Um, the horse is Mickey Mouse. He's in the zone. Very, very happy with him. Um, we won't get good ground, but we'd like to think that he'd be fine on soft ground, hoping it gets to a six and keeps improving, um, drawn wide. So he'll roll forward. That's his racing style. And I, I do think he's over the odds there at 10 to one. He, um, he's, he's a good rider. He's a good rider. He's a good rider. He's a good rider. I think he's a good rider. He, um, he's really in the zone. The horse he's going super and, um, he's rock hard fit. So I like him. He's got a very good overall record and he's a winner.

Speaker 9We really like this car. We've been pretty vocal about it for a while and, um, he's nice and fit. He's he's just, he was a bit of a handful as a younger horse has really come good in the brain. And, you know, like first up he bonged the start where a second up, he was nice and calm in the barriers and he flew the gates, rolled along at a quick tempo and kept going. So he'll put himself up there in a race that, um, there's a few that want to just take a little sip. Um, so I reckon he's, I reckon he's a good little go each way at that price. Um, we really like him and, uh, he's there to run very well.
Speaker 2He has been supported a price as well. Phillip Island. He's got a good track. Your thoughts there?
Speaker 9Yeah. I think he's fine. He's he's trialed, um, on heavy tracks here.
Speaker 2No problem. Planet red and some barge. Could they cause it upset in the group one Mimsy steaks?
Speaker 9Probably unlikely. It's a particularly strong addition. Um, they're better at a mile. Um, they've both had beautiful campaigns, you know, everything's gone to plan with them. Uh, planet red drawn gate two won't have to be far away. And, um, you've got Blake Shin on, which is great. And Sabah has drawn the outside gate. He'll have to go back and finish off. Um, that mightn't be a bad thing at Corfield come race eight. Uh, but, um, yeah, I would, I would expect there's a couple there that are a bit sharper and that have probably been set for this race. Whereas, um, these guys are kicking off and have got bigger things installed later on. You're a great form student. Who do you think the horse is to beat there in the Mimsy steaks there Saturday? But I think he'll run very well, just whether he can pick them up over the 1,100 against some horses who are probably a bit more forward.
Speaker 2The mail is that Rose Hill, when this horse steps out, he has this horror about him because he's a big unit, Michael.
Speaker 9He's a big boy. Yeah, well, he was 564 kilos in the morning of the slipper and 563 the day after, and at the moment he's around 580. So he's a big, big unit, but you'll see his coach has come in the last seven days. He's glistening. He's got muscle on muscle. He's a big powerhouse horse. So, yeah, you'll like what you see in the yard there. He's a lovely, lovely colt. Naturally, races will bring him on.
Speaker 2Can Grand Impact go one better, this preparation in the final event?
Speaker 9Yeah, I really think so. He's building to a win. Was excellent first up. Was even better second up. We had a bit of length, like a bit of weight, against a favourite of Bjorn's who gets right down the weight. But Zach Lloyd, drawn five, third up now off a long break. He'll run very well. He loves getting his toe on the ground. He's a great winning chance.
Speaker 2If I gave you $100, what would you do with it this weekend?
Speaker 9Yeah, I'd have $100 on Grand Impact. I think he's the most likely winning chance.
Speaker 2That's race 10, number two there at Rose Hill on Saturday. Anything for us at Bet365 Seymour today?
Speaker 9Oh, not particularly. Actually, I reckon Enea, he's the Saturno Aladdin on debut, and he was 10 to 1 earlier. I think he's worse in each way. He won his first three trials last prep well, and got through bad ground. And his trials have been okay this time around, but he's a nice horse. Not a bad maiden, that, but I think at the price. He's nice and forward, and he's shown good talent in the past.
Speaker 2That is a good race, that third race at Seymour today. There's a few with big spruiks on them, so looking forward to that. Text message coming through. If we had to back Big Sky in a futures market, what race would that be, Michael?
Speaker 9Well, the only one available for him is the Coolmore. He's a sprinting, high-octane colt. We don't see him getting past 1,200 this preparation at all. So his program is Poseidon, Danehill, Blue Sapphire, Coolmore. So that's the only race you could back him for. He trialed well on Monday. He just edged out Streisand in a strong heat. And he'll trial again on this coming Monday, and then we're off to the races.

I thought he was a really good late at Newcastle. And we actually have a really good opinion of him. So, as he gets more mature, he gets used. To Australian racing, I think he will go continue to improve. So, another exciting pick up for Derby.
Speaker 2Punton, quick back up, back in trip slightly. Your thoughts there?
Speaker 10Yeah, I thought he was really good last Saturday. Probably unlucky to run into a very good horse. He looks great. He's recovered well. And he's got a good gait. So, be able to put him on speed, utilise that fitness advantage. And no doubt, the favourite's going to be hard to beat. But he is. He's a nice horse. And I think he'll run well again.
Speaker 2Blue Door, gate one, second up. Your thoughts there from gate one?
Speaker 10Yeah, exciting race. A lot of good three-year-olds here. And Blue Door was a really good first time out. In some ways, I'd probably want to space her runs a little bit better. But she galloped well on Tuesday. I'm hoping there's improvement. It's only going to be her third start ever in a race. So, as time goes on, we'll learn a little bit more about her. But she's very fast. Hopefully, from gate one, she'll be able to put herself right there. And I think she should be hard to catch. Albeit, you've got to respect pretty much every other runner in the race. The Golden Slipper winner. There's some very good horses there.
Speaker 2I was hearing maybe even Everest for her. Is she that good?

Anyway, so, a wall open is also in that race. Yes, Gareth. And I think he's been going absolutely superbly. He was a very good two-year-old. He won three of five. Awkward gate, no doubt. He's going to get back and probably more than likely get back. But he'll be hitting the line hard. And his trials have been excellent. And his work on Tuesday was absolutely first-rate. So, if he had drawn as well as Blue Door, I would say there's nothing between them.
Speaker 8Okay.
Speaker 10And as he gets over further, he's probably going to get a little bit better as well. So, it's an exciting race, no doubt about it. But only with two great chances.
Speaker 2And when should we back wall-woven then?
Speaker 10Well, I'm not saying to even have a bet. But the more you bet, the more you help racing and the more you help my pocket. So, make sure you start now and just keep putting it on.
Speaker 2Is there a good race in wall-woven? Because I really like this galloper from this, like, as a two-year-old. And I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do as a three-year-old.
Speaker 10Yeah, he's actually, he will probably go to the run of the roads two weeks and then into the Golden Roads, which is his main aim. Yeah. And I do think he'll win. I think he'll be better at 1,400. But he's a very good-looking horse. He's got a great attitude. And I think the best is yet to come, definitely, from what we've seen at home. So, he's an exciting horse. He's one of the horses that you definitely want going into the spring. And I think he will stand up.
Speaker 2And no blinkers this time around, the reason for that?
Speaker 10Yeah, we just took him off. Last time, we went into the slipper and put them on. And a bit of an awkward gait. We thought we had to utilize probably his fitness jump and get him traveling. But he went in good. The race and the slipper will be it from an awkward gait.
Speaker 2And then we go to Amazing Eagle. You seem to be on top of this horse's issues, Amazing Eagle, at the moment. He's going great guns.
Speaker 10Yeah, he's not straightforward, but he has plenty of ability. And I think out to 1,200 probably suits. He gets into this race with absolutely no weight and a good gait. So, he should be able to put himself right there. So, I'd love to see him break through. He's got some good form now. Two of his last three, he's been... Beaten by the subsequent stakes on the last week. So, he's going well. I think he gets his opportunity on set today.
Speaker 2If I gave you $100, what would you do with it this weekend?
Speaker 10Oh, that's a tough one. $100 Quinella, Blue Door, Wall Rover.
Speaker 2Race eight, numbers six and four. I love that. Anything for us? A Gosford on a Friday?
Speaker 10Temptation will no doubt improve from her first up run. And I think she can run really well.
Speaker 2Gosford and Murray must've been so happy with you because I know that he's got the staying training ability in the family, but geez, it was a good return by Greenspaces. Bring on that Caulfield Cup.
Speaker 10Yeah, well, he's won the Caulfield Cup, of course. Murray, he won it with Mongolia and Cannes. And then he got second to the Melbourne Cups. The Melbourne Cups are one big staying race. It eluded him. He had a second, I think, fourth, two-fifths, a lot of runners. But he was very good. He hit the line nicely. Obviously, a really tough race. They went along, and he'll go to the Chelmsford Stakes Saturday week, and then continue to build up from there. So, looking forward to getting him out and trip. I think he's going really well. A little bit bigger and stronger from the autumn, and nice horse going into the spring, especially over a trip. So, Caulfield Cup,

Speaker 10Oh, Caulfield Cup is the main name, and we'll just get there and then consider where to. He's definitely a little bit sharper than he's been because he bred a three-quarter brother to trek and we'll see. He's got a great pedigree. Good morning to you, Sam. Morning, Gareth. Inca Runa. We all know she's got plenty of ability. Can she win first up in a pretty good heat there on Saturday, Group 3 level?
Speaker 12I suspect she'll probably improve for the run. Obviously, a pretty strong race. I think once she gets probably to mayor's grade. We toyed with the idea of going to the mayor's race Saturday, but didn't feel she'd probably be quite ready for the 1200. So we've kept her to the 1100 first up. She'll have a soft run in transit. She'll run well, but I think she'll probably improve for it.
Speaker 2I think everybody's looking forward to seeing American Eagle back at the race. It's especially all of his owners there with MyRaceHorse. He's drawn gate one. Your thoughts there on the McNeil stakes?
Speaker 12Yeah, obviously it's really exciting for MyRaceHorse that that ownership model's really taking off and they've been great supporters of ours. He's a really progressive horse. You're longer involved with him as well. He's obviously still a cult and we harbour some ambition to get him to some good races and Saturday's a stepping stone for that. He's drawn a soft gate. He's first up and the McNeil isn't a grand final for him, but it's a nice kick-off point and it'll probably tell us where we're headed moving forward.
Speaker 2So his grand final's undecided this preparation?
Speaker 12It is a bit. We've often used probably the McNeil as a way of working out whether you go on a sprinting campaign or you head out to the mile. Not entirely sure exactly what he is going to be yet, but he's got those two options, those two paths to go down. He's obviously got a race to that level, but that's sort of where we're thinking he'll head down one of those two routes.
Speaker 2What's your speed map thinking here from an inside gate with him?
Speaker 12Look, second start in a race, hard to predict, but I'd say he'll begin and he'd be in the first four or five, I would think. I'd say he's capable of taking up a leader's back position. But Mark will sum it up on how he starts. Like I said, it's not a grand final, so you're not going to bust him out of his comfort zone to go and win the race, but as long as he's having a good experience and running very well, we'll get a guide on where we head after that.
Speaker 2Tom Kitten's at $21 with bet $3.65 for the Memsie Stakes. Has he been disrespected in this market here, Sam, in your eyes?
Speaker 12Look, I think it's probably a reflection of the race. I don't think we probably envisaged it coming up quite as strong as it is. I do think probably the Sydney horses will probably have a bit of an edge on the Melbourne horses coming into the start of the spring is my view. They've had much warmer weather, probably had really good access to tracks, and the horses generally are look and feel a little better to start off the spring, and my view is always that they start to even out once you get to that Caulfield Carnival and onwards, so he'll improve for the run, Tom, but he's obviously was a really good fresh winner in a much weaker race last preparation. I wouldn't shock if he's running very well and steaming through them late, but I'd probably feel the Sydney horses might
Speaker 13just have the edge. And who do you think the horse to beat is then?
Speaker 12Well, I thought Angel Capital was a very good runner. I know he's a little bit maligned with punters, but he's from a trainer's perspective and the way he ran first up, he'd be pretty confident coming into a second up run out to seven furlongs, and yeah, I thought he'd be the one to beat.
Speaker 2And then we go to Al Dukie. Can he bounce back in the final event?
Speaker 12He's probably better at a mile. Not a race with much speed inside him, so Willow knows him well. I'd say if he begins, he'll be able to slow forward and take up a forward position somewhere in the first five or six, and yeah, you never write him off. He's just a good old-fashioned campaigner who will appreciate a bit of sting out of the track, and he generally raced really well there, so he'll run well, but he's probably going to be just a bit better suited out
Speaker 2to a mile. The former international horse, I think he was in Hong Kong, wasn't he? Unbelievable. Unbelievable. Your thoughts there in the third race at Rose Hill on Saturday? Yeah, he's
Speaker 12an interesting horse. I thought he's run, you watch him closely, his first up run was probably a little better than the markets giving credit to for Saturday. He was poking through a bit late. He was a bit fresh early. Yeah, it wouldn't shock me if he runs well above his price. He works quite well, that horse. I think he'll run a good race.
Speaker 2Botanical Boy's going well. He's third up. It meets a couple of nice ones in Sydney in race number five there on Saturday.
Speaker 12Yeah, he's ready to peak his next couple. He's a big horse. He's taken a couple of runs to tighten up, and his coats have just come through, so finds a hot race, obviously, and first time up there, but yeah, I think he can run well. He's probably an each-way
Speaker 2chance. And Street Artist, what do you make of the gate there? He's been pretty good, this preparation. And he deserves to win one, but could you take 280 about him?
Speaker 12I mean, no, I couldn't. He's running really well. His last run was excellent. He just blew the start, which he can do. You're sort of going with a plan to be a bit further forward, but it just depends on how he begins from the gates. Interestingly, he probably can run very well ridden off the speed and shows a nice turn of foot, but it's a low percentage play in a horse race when you're having to run down progressive horses, so got a good jockey on board. I think if he gets the right run and he's close enough turning for home, he'll run very well, but he looks a bit short in the market, I thought, yeah.
Speaker 2Sam, if I gave you $100, what would you do with it this weekend?
Speaker 12I'd probably go 25 each way, unbelievable. Wow. And I'd go... 50 to win American Eagle. Beautiful.
Speaker 2So race 7, number 9, and race 3, that's at Caulfield, of course, American Eagle in the McNeil Stakes, and then I like this. Race 3, number 1, unbelievable. I'm just having a look at my Bet365 account as we speak there at Rose Hill on Saturday. I think we're getting a good price because Athelwolf's all of the rage at $1.55 for Matty Smith. Unbelievable. Speaker 12Yeah, he's on a guinea's path. He's going to resume in the McKenzie Saturday week, 1300 Sandown. Tried up really well with American Eagle last week. Actually just had his measure. So yeah, he's come back in very good shape. So he's on that sort of path.

Speaker 14Yeah, thank you, Gareth. Good luck. On behalf of Lindsay Park, we're so excited to have our champion back. It's a great song and an even better racehorse. And, yeah, looking forward to his first up run for the spring.
Speaker 2Now, we were discussing this yesterday on the Wednesday Agenda with Troy Causton and Brent Serafa regarding Mr. Brightside and what a training performance it would be if you could get him to win, in this field especially, but first up after such a long time off. What do you think about his chances there tomorrow or Saturday afternoon?
Speaker 14Yeah, it's certainly... It's star-studded field. Like, it's... By no means is any group one easy, but this one in particular has come up quite hot. I think he's going as best as we can have him for a first-up assignment after so long off the scene. If he wins, it will probably cement the superstar that he is. But, as always, from nine, we'll have our tasks and we'd love the track to be a little bit firmer for a first-up assignment after so much off, but he's pretty versatile as well. It just means the ground's a little bit more testing, but it's... It's... It certainly doesn't take away from our excitement.
Speaker 2He doesn't have to prove anything anymore, Mr Brightside, but what would be a pass mark in your eyes come Saturday?
Speaker 14For me... For me, personally, I'd love him to finish within three lengths. Yep. Just as a... And that's a pretty high benchmark, to be fair, because it's very dependent on the run we get from the barrier.
Speaker 2What do you do with him after this? Is there another clash, maybe, with Pride of Jenny and a fan, or do you go down the path of a Maccabi diva and take on a She's Alibi? And... There's a chance Autumn Glow might even go down that path now.
Speaker 14Yeah, it's... It's actually an incredible array of options after this first-up assignment. So, not only is it going to be based off how he pulls up himself, but also a little bit where the opposition are going. So, there's a lot of tactical now, so I'd love to be able to steer everyone in the right direction, but at the moment, it truly is a blank canvas.
Speaker 2Now, let's... So, yeah, so, Mr Brightside, just can't wait to see him back at the races, and... He'll run a good race, but whether he's good enough, time will tell. So, that's Mr Brightside. Stealth of night, this mare that... What did you think of her first-up effort there the other day? Just didn't go to plan?
Speaker 14Yeah, it didn't quite go to plan, and certainly was below her best. She's come up very well supported in the market. Her best form is on top of the ground.
Speaker 8Yeah.
Speaker 14We're willing to give that run on the soft track, but we will want it to be an improving track. It's probably the only asterisk going, into the race. It's a great barrier. It gets in well with Jackson's claims, but we just would love the track to be a bit firmer if we were to be very confident.
Speaker 2Our WA listeners are looking forward to hearing what you have to say about Machine Gun Gracie, who's second up on Saturday, stepping out to the 2,000.
Speaker 14Yeah, I thought her run first up, she really jumped, travelled strongly fresh, and then was left a bit flat-footed in a pretty good race, and then stuck on well through the final 200. Her track work at home has been very pleasing, she's an absolute athlete. Obviously, we've got Craig Williams on board from 11, will probably be nice and positive again, but she just probably wants the track a little bit harder as well. Just really hoping this Melbourne weather turns the fans on and starts drawing this track out a bit.
Speaker 2Cruiserweight hasn't had much luck this preparation, or well, especially over the last couple of weeks, and now he needs to get into this race on Saturday. It's the third emergency.
Speaker 14Ben's scratched behind the barriers, he's gone through all the processes to clear them, and he passed with flying colours. So, if he does get the luck of scratching, I think we need three to come out. It's Ethan Brown, barrier four, and 55 kilos, I think he'll be running a very forward race. But if we don't get the scratchings and he does come out as an emergency, there is an option the week later at Sandown.
Speaker 2What do you do with Stylish and Wineglass Bay? Your thoughts there?
Speaker 14Stylish is a, I think she's ready to go with it. She's ready to go with a good barrier with Blake Sheen on. The first-up run was very much like a trial. She just needed the run at 1200, and this is her sweet spot, 14. Wineglass Bay is a New Zealand galloper that we're still learning a bit about, and there's other options for him Wednesday as well. He's got the visitor's draw at 19. I don't think they know he's been transferred to a Victorian trainer yet, so he got the visitor's draw. But there is an option for him on Wednesday that we'll strongly consider if we don't see the desired scratchings tomorrow morning.
Speaker 2Can Photograph win first-up in race five, the Quartz of Stakes?
Speaker 14Dickey Gate against a lot of informed horses, so the stable feel is that she'll need a lot of luck in running to be challenging it, and the run will really bring her on.
Speaker 2A live another day is the favour in the heath, but he hasn't come up against a horse like a War Machine that he'll come up against on Saturday. I know it wasn't the perfect start to War Machine's campaign there at Flemington when he was scratched at the gates. Your expectations with him on Saturday? I don't know.
Speaker 14Yeah, it was very nice of Flemington to offer us a course proper gallop in between races that he decided to take on himself, but we've been thrilled with the way he's come out of that. We took our time. We took him back to the trials. We've been working on his barrier manners, and as you said, he's getting in very well on the weight spread barrier four. He's probably worth taking a chance on, and his fitness is well ahead of where it would be normally for a first-up run.
Speaker 2Rich on bubbles in the McNeil Stakes?
Speaker 14We'll need to balance, and get a bit of cover and be joining in late from a wide barrier. If he drew a better barrier, we would be more confident.
Speaker 2Okay, and then the last race over the 1,400 metres, Storm Leopard. Your thoughts there? He's first up?
Speaker 14First up? He's really looking like he's come of age from his three-year-old to four-year-old year. First time stepping out against the older horses, but we've got aspirations over further for this horse, and he's looking forward to seeing him kick off. He should get a lovely run in transit from that gate.
Speaker 13Is he Caulfield Cup horse?
Speaker 14He's a potential for sure, definitely. He's obviously another one with a number of options that we can go. He's obviously got quite a high rating after running so well in the autumn as a three-year-old in the Derby, so he's another one that can be looking as well for the Group 1 dreams, but also a little bit of lower-hanging fruit in the Group options too, if that's the way we want to go.
Speaker 2From a trainer's eye, what did you make of Café Millennium N? Mr. Brightside's track work there last week?
Speaker 14Yeah, I think Twitter made it pretty obvious that they thought Café was going particularly well, so we can't fault him. He's got an unbelievable knack for drawing gates for the double. So logically, he'll be having to go back for cover, and he'll be rattling home late. I think he'll be really... I think he'll be in everyone's black books for a second-up performance. We might have to get too far back from that gate, but he really is working well, and he's also very fit, so the soft conditions shouldn't be too much of a worry.
Speaker 2And what did you make of Brightside's track work there? Just explain that to the people out there.
Speaker 14Yeah, very typical of Mr. B, to be honest. We weren't worried. We trotted him up in the morning, and he really improved out of it, and then his last piece of work on Wednesday, his recovery was exceptional. So he's just tightening up the way that he needs to to compete at the highest level. We'd love to... We'd love to give him an easy kill, but no such things exist when you've got the record, the form record that he does. So we had to give him a bit of tough love, and he's really responded to it.
Speaker 2Run, Harry, run in Sydney or Melbourne Saturday?
Speaker 14We're leaning towards Sydney.
Speaker 2Okay, then. Can he win in Sydney? Obviously, if he can. That's where...
Speaker 14Yeah, we do think he stands a better chance in Sydney. Good gate, Timmy Clark on, and a drier track for him. So he's also pretty good on that Sydney leg.
Speaker 2If I gave you $100, what would you do with it this weekend?
Speaker 14I'd have $100 on Cruiserweight if he gets a run, but if he were to be scratched, I'd be having $100 on War Machine.

Speaker 15for the first time yeah that's the plan yeah i've never been to australia full stop um my my wife spent some time in australia when she was younger but i've never been i was very close to coming a couple of times um but it just didn't happen i would have got there covid year i'd say but then obviously that got completely kiboshed so yeah look really excited man man to come to see it all and um i see it all firsthand because i have spent a long time looking on thinking about it um you know and i suppose playing playing um you know lucky to be involved in some runners there over the years um via joseph and that's
Speaker 2so um yeah all very exciting now joseph o'brien was on nick luck's podcast there the other day and we nearly um choked on our cornflakes when we woke up the next morning and it read that joseph could have 10 in the melbourne cup six is the record robert hit robert hickmont back in 2013 um obviously that would be the plan if everything goes to plan um do you think you'll have how many runners do you think you'll have in the last couple of years i don't know i don't know i don't know
Speaker 15lexus melbourne cap first of all um well look garrett it's tough because you know yourself there's an awful lot of time between now and then there's an awful lot of um criteria that needs to be met you know the like at the minute i think of the ones that that are potentials i think there's six of them that are rated high enough and you don't want to have satisfied the the the ballot conditions etc and then there's there's a bunch more that will run before then and hopefully either lift themselves up um high enough to to and get qualified etc or i think there's there's well there's certainly the intention and the hope would be to bring a few down and run in the likes of the geelong cup um or the the mooney valley gold cup and potentially run their way into the field um so look at there's there's a lot of moving parts um but look you know i think you have to be realistic too i know it i know it makes for a great headline you know 10 in the cup etc but if you don't you don't have to be realistic too i know it makes for a great and you and i and i and i am a betting man but garrett if you if you offered me 50 to 1 about joseph having 10 in the starting gates in the melbourne cup i wouldn't have a wager you know i think if if you were in a in the all high position to offer uh me or any of the team five you know i think we'd be absolutely delighted to get that money there um in the starting gates because um look they all all i think all bar um to the horses two of the horses um are owned by jp mcmanus all the others are owned by different individuals you know plenty of them are australian um based connections look everyone's mad excited everybody wants to compete they know joseph's record in the race he has a proven ability to to get them through everything they need to get through get them down there keep them in good shape down there and look you know go and be competitive in in one of the great races so um we we have an issue up in this part of the world guard and i understand why why people might might um screw their screw their uh forehead up a little bit when they hear 10 or you know any trainer having a bunch of runners like that we have issues up here in some of our national hunt races with uh some of the biggest most powerful operations um you know flooding big handicap fields with a view to keeping out opposition and things like that and and that's problematic but i think this is different you know every horse here um is put being put through a really arduous really really expensive process to travel you know around the world to go and compete um no one's no horse has been sent down there unless they're considered to have a realistic chance of being competitive and if they satisfy all of the qualification criteria um to me i i know people would say of course he'd say that i couldn't care less who trains them if the horses are on their way in and their connections have got them down there um you know they're more than entitled to be there so um look i think it's mad exciting of course i do but um like i say i definitely wouldn't be expecting him to end up with 10 half that would
Speaker 2be lovely i think it's a credit to joseph and his team because a lot of the australian owners our big owners have identified joseph as the trainer who they believe that can get the job to win them a melbourne cup obviously joseph's been able to do it on a couple of occasions um for lloyd williams with rekindling and also twilight payment but australian bloodstock aussie cur just to name a few have got horses with joseph because they know that he can get the job done during a melbourne spring but i love jp mcmanus because when i was um in the uk for a little while in ireland i i i love jp jp mcmanus especially his horses over the jumps in those famous colors and um it's great for australian racing that someone like him is desperate to win our great race
Speaker 15yeah and look at i know he he may not be super familiar to to i guess your your listeners and viewers yeah and that are based in us but but i i really couldn't over emphasize the significance of jp mcmanus in jump racing yeah you know like this is if we had a hall of fame like he he's probably the first man going in there because for oh god 40 plus years you know he has just been the most incredible supporter of national racing like god i don't know what the number is but it'd be what you know what well over 100 horses and training um a lot of them with you know small battling trainers um for whom you know jp's support matters a huge amount and um and you know look everyone knows what this game is like like jp's won everything in jumps racing and yet he still has the enthusiasm of a of a 25 year old man for the game you know and guys like people come and go in this game we all know um especially when they when they have some success you know it can it can the the the allure can wear off but but guys like him men like him are just one in one in a billion um so for the melbourne cup to have captured him um as it did last year and you know it was it was a case that you know goody two shoes you know had been running over fences earlier in the year and and look she ended up really clicking um back on the flat and the the the proposal was put the jp to look maybe she could compete in this race and um you know his family members came out and really threw themselves into the experience i know they have their these are big betting people they they they they they live for betting and i know the call of the card the call of the card was something that massively excited them they love that and um look at since then it's been a case that we we want to get back down there we want to compete um we want to experience this again and have a crack and um and that's that's that's great for the cup it's great for international racing um look we the whole team and joseph and joseph himself obviously um look we we just love the concept of of the world getting smaller and smaller i've been able to go and and have a crack and compete and try and win and and have a great time doing it you know that's that's what it's all about for us i'm with kevin blake here on giddy up

Speaker 15them in yeah i think you know they're in i think he can get in yeah yeah it just could it could be a little bit tricky like starford has been a bit of a revelation this year he's found improvement he he beat a mayor of mine at the car earlier in the year and really really upset me at a big price in a group in a group three but um he's been a bit of a revelation his sire like it's it's a mad story his his his owner breeder stood the stallion privately himself he's a horse that he raced um there would there was no real commercial appetite for him he's a very small horse he stood him himself covered it covered a few of his own mares and um he he's popped up with a few with a few right ones and what he's done is he's been a bit of a revelation and he's been a bit of a revelation this this guy is one of them and uh it's it's a phenomenal story look i think i think he probably needs to do a little bit more to get there yeah but we're going to get a chance to do it um the caulfield cup is a race that we haven't explored um you know compare it can certainly compare it to the melbourne cup um but look it's a race that makes plenty of sense i have a liking for omni man um don't be i know his form can look it looks a little bit um jagged but i wouldn't be put off by that um if we could do it again i think it's a great race and i think it's a great race and i if we can get him there and he's probably on the cusp of where he needs to be to get in um you'd absolutely love to have him in the field and if not um there are some options for him um you know in the in the days and weeks to follow that which is great look we're working through the program at the minute you know setting up um you know first preference options um you know fallback options you know potential second outings for them down there um look it's a great racing program the prize money is fantastic and um and look we we're we're really going into this with uh with a bit between our teeth to go down and
Speaker 2compete you know um in the melbourne cup you've got trust your instinct around 26 with bet 365 um your horse excuse me james james james j braddock uh defiantly sons and lovers goody two shoes who was second in the cup um last year in tennessee stud um who do you think and i know that you might be a little bit biased with james j braddock but who do you think the picks are going to be in the cup um
Speaker 15at the moment would be for joseph oh look it's really tough lots of different profiles lots of different styles um like look james j is the young horse um he's gelled um since his last run you know i can't wait to see him there in two and a half weeks at leopardstown and just see how he behaves himself and see how we see what he's like as a gel link because we'll be we'll be learning along with everyone else but look i think when when joseph won the cup with rick kindling i'm as a as a northern hemisphere three-year-old and charlie appleby wanted the the year after with cross counter um with with the same type of profile i think we're all thinking to ourselves okay this is this is the way that we want to approach this but look with the since the i guess the the enhanced veterinary protocols have come in it's it's proven a little bit more difficult to get three-year-olds um into the gates um so look james j came through his first scan and he satisfied everyone and hopefully he can he can continue to do what he's been doing for a while and continue to do that he's off the perfect rating um so look he's very interesting um but look in terms of the other profiles like defiantly is such an interesting horse he he's just a revelation um you know it's incredible his his his if he gets into the field he'll be the third um producer of his mother to run in the melbourne cup which is pretty bananas um and he's just come alive you know he i met some of the the oz bloodstock guys there in the springtime they were over to see al rifa run in france and i defiantly came up in conversation and i just i remember i got i i think they were actually quite insulted because i got quite enthusiastic and i'm like i can't wait to see this guy at ascot he he's just perfect for the ascot snakes and they're like oh yeah really really like yeah oh he's so slow he's so lazy he he's he's perfect for this race and they're looking at me going we're after buying a slow lazy horse um but but that's why he looked at the time and look the blinkers have just completely uh focused his mind and look he was a revelation um in france the other day and dylan gave him just the as as he has the last twice he's just you know giving him these really aggressive front running rides and um and really showing him in a different light and look if he makes the starting field for the melbourne cop that that change that changes the race i think he's in that i think he's in yeah oh oh he's he's guaranteed iran he's got the rating and he's qualified but just in terms of you know coming through everything else between them and then yeah um it's just if he's in the race that's a different that's a different melbourne yeah you know that's and and he gets to the front and he starts winding from a long way out you know that that makes that race a european style two-mile contest and it'll be absolutely as i like to say guard he'd be dragging them all out to deep water dipping their heads underneath and see who's who you see who can keep their head down there the longest because because he because he can go deep
Speaker 2goody two shoes i i love her um hopefully that um she can come back and go one better this year and she gets a firmer track and um yeah so there's so much to talk about mate we could talk all day but it is exciting now do the australian jockeys ring you to try and get on one of these horses or not
Speaker 15yeah we'll be open to all conversations now garrett because uh there's we're just only talking about it the other day because you know quite a few of these if if they do make it you know they will be pretty light and um you know option options for light jockeys light like international internationally experienced jockeys from our neck of the woods would be pretty pretty small a number you know wayne lorton went down and gave um goody two shoes you know a beautiful ride last year and you'd love to have him on the team again um you know dylan brown mcmonigal you know joseph you he doesn't go super light um so you know there's going to be opportunities there and if um if any if any of the the top jocks in australia are listening to this and they like the sound of it you know do get in touch because it's going to be we're starting to think about it all right and um there's going to be opportunities there i'd say you know yeah hey mate we can't wait to

Speaker 2says we'll be doing wa stable mail today we will we'll be catching up with a few trainers just after about 11 20 11 25 today aaron morris and the ceo of racing victoria will join me straight after 11 o'clock so i'm looking forward to that and then we've got tassie time towards the back end of the show david gately's not far away with gator's game plan so if you've got a question there for gator let us know on the garrison hound text line oh four double nine seven three six seven three six one of the most interesting runners in sydney on saturday is wild atlantic he's a son of exceedance he's unbeaten or he's trialed really nicely um in preparation um for his debout effort he's had the one two three four five trials he's won four of those um he's had the one two three four five trials he's won four of those um he's had the one two three four five trials he's won four of those um he's had the one two um and he was very good in the the troll reef in his third back on the 14th of august and he's been he's been backed heavily you could have got 26 about wild atlantic at the start of the week he's around 7 50 now he's trained by team hawks and michael hawks joins us here on giddy up michael hello to you hi gareth how are you good thank you is that any of your money wild atlantic there with wild atlantic ahead of saturday's san domenico i'd actually like to know how much
Speaker 16money does it really take to move that sort of figures because i'd be very very surprised
Speaker 2And what the figure is, Gareth, to be honest. Well, I think there's a little bit there. Once it was 26 and then obviously a few smart punters have jumped aboard and I've been reading social media. There's a few good judges that have liked the trials of Wild Atlantic. And then I think the momentum builds. Team Hawks, son of exceedance, trailed nicely. It'll be odds on if you give us a push.
Speaker 11Well, you've been trying to get me all week. You finally got me. You haven't replied to my text on Monday when I said, should we be backing this horse? So I thought, well, they must like it if they're not getting back to me. I'm a busy man up here, Gareth. I'm a busy man. They tell me you've been going to get all your facials and everything like that for the night of nights tonight in New South Wales. Not me, mate. I'm working. So I'm one of those people in the backstalls. So who's going to this awards night tonight? Bjorn's not going. You're not going? I have no idea, mate, to be honest. I couldn't tell you. I thought you might be there. You love that sort of stuff. No, I missed out as well. So there you go.
Speaker 2So, all right, then, Wild Atlantic, what did we make of this colt by exceedance?
Speaker 16Look, everyone's seen his trials. He's a lovely colt. He's done everything right. He's just needed a lot of time to come to hand. He's by exceedance. He's very much like Dad in that sense and that frame and that mould. But he got there as a two-year-old. He trailed well. He's a two-year-old. He just needed the time. We've given it to him. Look, we're under no illusions come Saturday. But you've got to look at the race at hand gas. Now, I know you said before heavily backed. You know, he's 26.50. He's in the $7. You've got to look at what's in the field, like gift house, slipper winner, pay-go, pay-go, war woven, you know, size in Queensland winner, music time, place getter, golden gift winner. Like, that's the field. You're up against. So, first of all, does he have the ability to line up in a race like this? 100% he does. But what he lacks is the race craft that that's something that we don't know. Obviously, he's a first starter going into it. But his trials have been super. We can't fault the horse. The horse has plenty of ability. Everybody's seen it. But now he's just got to go and transition it into race day come Saturday. And first and foremost, it was all about the barrier, what sort of barrier we could draw. If he drew wide, we weren't going to run. He's drawn a good marble in barrier four. So, look, the horse is there. He's ready. He's going to perform well, but he just probably lacks that racecraft.
Speaker 2That racecraft, like watching his trials, he does get keen. Um, what do you think that he needs to iron out as he, as his career, um, as he, as he starts his career?
Speaker 16Look, he's just, he's like a young, young baby, like a child that they grow and they mature. And they bounce off one another going to school when you see him walking down the road, hand in hand. And that's what he's been like. It's, it's not the ability side because we wouldn't be putting a horse of this color in a race like this. You know, we did it with, um, nepotism. He probably should have arguably won his first race and he was 40 to one. He'd come out and won a group one over over a mile as a two year old. So you got to know your horses. You've got to know their ability. It's all fair to say, oh, let's just run in a race because it's there. You've got to be known. We are. At this bloke's got the ability, but he's still learning his craft. He's still a baby. He's not the fair finished product and he's got a long way to go, but it's a starting point. And yes, we're expecting him to run well. But then again, you've got, as I said, the race craft comes into it. The track comes into it. You know how the, the speed, the tempo, he can get a bit keen. And these are all little things that we, we, we iron out as we go as a, as a racehorse trainer. But is he an exciting horse? A hundred percent. He is. He's very. Very exciting. And I can't wait to see him on Sunday. Where do you think you'll land from that draw? Oh, look, he should be hopefully, you know, one out, one back could be the ideal spot, but it all depends on tempo and how things play out. Everyone wants to be, you know, fourth one out, of course, but he's drawn the right marble. He's drawn barrier four and I'd rather draw four than eight. And if he drew eight, he probably wouldn't be running. So barriers this day and age is, it's a, it's a very key element to, to winning races because horses are so even. And this is a very even field and in my opinion, yes, we're taking on those horses. But as I said, the quality in this race, it's very small, but it's unbelievable. Really. He's old man might've cool more. Is that the dream? But everything's a dream at the moment when they're a cult until they get that, uh, ultimate gear change. And you know, this bloke, he's, he's shown all the right signs. He's got the right temperament. He's got the ability and he's just got to come out and do it. So. Look, he's very exciting. He's probably. Lips at the moment because he is the, I suppose, unproven horse going into a race like this and everyone's seen his trials and that's why he's probably the hot topic and everyone's talking about it. So, um, the horse is great as well, going into it, can't, and I can't really fault and for everyone that's listening, he's, he's going into that race, but at the odds that he is like, you know, slip on his $5, he's sevens or seven 50. There's a lot of, there's not much difference there.

Speaker 17case for, um, I would say eight of them, eight and a half, maybe But you can only have one on top. And, look, again, similar to the McNeil, I was oscillating between three of them. So I thought on a bone-dry track, if it's a bit leaderish, I want to be on Baywalk to around Corford. He's only been to 1,400 twice. He's won them both brilliantly in very fast time. In one of those, he beat Jimmy Starr. Went back and had a look at that race. And Jimmy Starr was every bit as good as him, though. He was back and wide on a day you really had to be up and inside. He had a myriad of excuses last prep, Jimmy. But it's getting close to his D-Day, I think. But, look, he's trialling as well as he ever has, I think. And I don't know what the knock is on Angel Capital. Maybe the drift, I'm not worried about the gate. Maybe the drift is that J-Mac picked another one. He's on another horse. And that's not a knock on Benny, of course. But I just wonder if that was the reason. And he is much maligned, but he's a good horse. So there's a three I want to be with. And I'll work my betting strategy around. And then, outside of those, I can make a case for Cosmic Crusade. But I can't get him in at $5. Mr. Brightside, I want to see. Treasure the moment, I'd like to see. But, you know, concede can win. And same story, Autumn Boy. So, great race. Jimmy Starr on top. Bring it on.
Speaker 2Yeah, it's a beauty, isn't it? You're getting a good price now for Angel Capital. Now, McDonald, I think, had the choice. But Benny Mellum's got a great record on this horse. He's a proven big-time rider, Benny Mellum. As I said, he gets on well with Angel Capital. And then, Autumn Boy, it was interesting to see that McDonald rides this horse. And it's into $10 now. So, it's got so many different storylines that you're trying to work out regarding the Memsie Stakes. Like, which horses are fit enough? There's a few horses here that will rock up at Caulfield. And this is their big grand final or the first of their grand finals this spring. And then you get Mr. Brightside, who's the interesting runner here, Gator. Like, he loves 1,400 meters. He loves Caulfield. He's a dead-set champion. But could you back him at $11 here, first up against this field after such a long layoff?
Speaker 17Look, as a nine-year-old off a long break, it's challenging. But, gee, he's a hard horse to pot, given what he won. I run one bad race, inverted commas, in a couple of years. And he had excuses there. So, genuine excuses. So, look, he's a ripper. What a star. And his will to win is phenomenal. So, I'd hate to be in a dogfight with him. But I'm going to work against him, even in the quaddi. If he wins, I'll cheer. You know, I'll be clapping. But I'll be out of the quaddi. Yeah.

Speaker 17Going to go to Sin City, race 10. 10 races race. 10, number 12, Amazing Eagle. That was a really good chase. I thought fresh. Prima Bella's obviously franked the form. And they ran good time. He was well backed. Look, with 52 and a half, he had a benchmark 94. He looks, it's a winnable weight, isn't it? So, race 10, number 12, Amazing Eagle. Pat up.

Speaker 17Yeah, well I think Bridal Waltz is a winning hope. She was beaten two lengths by a war machine first up last spring. So it's easy to tie in. I think she's a better mare now. She trod well. And I think it's advantaged her on soft ground over war machine. She's been on wet ground five times. She's won three of them. One of the misses, she was wide all the way and as good as any running. in the race in the Group 1 Galaxy. So she's trialling. Well, there's a really good case for Bridal Waltz. The name of the other horse in the Heatherley was?
Speaker 2That was just Bridal Waltz. That was the only horse I think you mentioned. Treasure the moment in the Memsie.
Speaker 17Oh, in the Memsie, yeah. Look, she won this obviously brilliantly last year, didn't she? So that gives her a case. She was beaten first up last time in, but she led. I don't think she's a natural leader. Is she a length or so off them perhaps since this time last year
Speaker 2or let's find out. Hi, Gareth. I love your show heaps. Thank you. I'm just curious on your thoughts with Salty Pearl returning to the track this Saturday in the Group 3 quarter. Do you think she can win for barrier eight over 1,200 metres? That's from Rob. Your thoughts there, Gator?
Speaker 17Yeah, look, I think she's strongly in the conversation. Obviously, she was really competitive with Belle Cheval last prep at 2,000. I think what's probably more relevant is her last rest of run. She wasn't given much. I hope, you know, the way that race unfolded and really found the line. So, look, she's trialling great and she's definitely in the mix in the courts.
Speaker 2So, yep. Hey, Gareth, any chance the Giddy Up team would do a champion stake state preview at a pub in Melbourne on the Friday? A couple of tips just to discuss and give thoughts on the race card. Went to something similar a few years back at the Mail Exchange Hotel for a Derby Day preview and it was awesome to hear from Michael Kent Jr. and Dr. Turf on that day. That's from Benny. Speaker 17Oh, no. I think he's a really good horse, you know, and he's bred to just keep on improving. Add to that, he's in the right stable to keep on improving, you know, and they don't get every problem child right, this stable, but they get most of them right. You know, very elegant was a clown in her younger days. So was Nature Strip. But they just got the best out of him, you know, Chris and his team. So I'm expecting them to do the same with Central Europe. And he's my pick of the three-year-olds to run well in a Cox play

It doesn't pertain to pure form, but he asks, what gear change or equipment adjustment do you pay the most attention to when doing the form? And that is especially critical with a lot of horses resuming. We have some horses gilded. Maybe some blinkers are going on. So there's a nice one to start from, Zach Stewart. Gator?
Speaker 17It's a good question. So the way I look at it is each horse is different, right? So each athlete's different. If I see a two... A young athlete clearly not concentrating, but there's a lot of talent there, and they come back gilded, that's generally something that I'm interested in. Same story with a gear change, where you see a horse lacking concentration, blinkers go on or not settling, and maybe they come off. And they're probably my two favourites.
Speaker 6Another one there, Pauly? Yes, we've got one here from Paul Waterboard. Thank you very much to Paul. Great name as well, by the way. Gator, heading into the spring, if you could only have one Victoria, and jockey ride all your horses, who would you go to? Good question, Paul. Put Gator on the spot here.

Speaker 17Yeah, look, I'm not sure. I think I agree with this talent there and had a good look at her on Saturday. I'm keen to see what she does. You know, she's only had, you know, a very lightly raced career to date. So, there's plenty of room to move. There's plenty of good races if you've got a handy horse. So, look, you're probably not going to beat the A-pluses, but as I say, there's plenty of good races.

Speaker 17and I think you can make a case. You know, given this horse probably, you know, should have beaten Commit last time. Commit was right with American Eagle, and his favourite. So, on that line, I think 25-odd to one is way over. Yeah.
Speaker 2Morning, Gareth. Can you ask, Gareth Gator, does he think Storm Leopard is a chance in the Caulfield Cup, considering he runs in the Tallic and he's great, and he had a great third of green spaces in the Derby, especially first time over 2,400 metres? That's from Mark from the Central Coast.
Speaker 17Yeah, look, off his trials, he looks to have come on. You know, I think green spaces had a fair margin on him in the Derby, didn't he? So, that's his challenge. He's got to improve quite a bit to beat home that horse. He will have a little weight advantage, I think, that horse. And his trials have been great. So, he runs on Saturday and we'll get a good line on where he's going in this prep.
Speaker 2Stefan, I appreciate the nice words, Stefan. He says that, I don't know if I can read this out exactly, but Gator, what do you make of Planet Red? Because does he make you nervous? He cost me about eight multis as the banker of a few of my multis last time this horse was in work during the autumn, Planet Red. Obviously, he's still not over it. But do I know I need to back him here, Planet Red? How far can he go, Gator?
Speaker 17Look, he's big odds on Saturday in a group one. He's an entitled to be, you know, you would think. He's a good horse. Whether he can beat these at group one level, I have my doubts and the odds tell you that. So, look, I think there's a good race in him this prep. It just depends if they can dodge the A pluses.
Speaker 2Gator, we all know that you're keen on Jenny Maltabella. She plays a part in your parlay this weekend at Caulfield. Why do you like her so much?
Speaker 17Well, I think she's genuinely the one on the upward spiral. And her run last time, you know, given the ride and run she had was, I think, clearly the best run in the race. She had no hope to savage the line. She had the audacity to do that off such a wide run. She gets Jamie Mellon taking over with no weight. And he gets to 1,800. So, yeah, look, she's on the up, keen runner. I think she runs well.
Speaker 2I think she's better than 78 grade. Do you think Machine Gun Grace will be ready to go on Saturday? Or with the Melbourne Cup being her main target this year, she's being trained a little differently. That's from Sean.
Speaker 17Yeah, I'm certainly going to wait and see for further. But I think they'll be expecting hitting the line sweetly would be a pass, Mark.
Speaker 2Liam from Tamworth's got a couple of questions for you here, Gator. How does Yellow Jersey perform for his first up assignment this time around? I know you're keen on him.
Speaker 17Yeah, look, you wouldn't be being put off by the trials. You know, he looked terrific. To my eye, he made Barnabara look second rate. And I know it's just a trial, but still part of the puzzle, right? I think his Australian debut run was terrific. He looked home, heavy nine track. He was beaten by a really good wet tracker who was fit and absolutely flying at the time in more eternal. So I think it's a great starting point for him.
Speaker 2Good morning, lads. How does, and then also Liam wants to know about a theory in race seven, the Philly there and the McDonald's. What do you think, Neil?
Speaker 17Yeah, look, I liked the recent trial. I think the debut win was really good. I obviously had panels on them. It was held up the entire race and still beat them.
Speaker 2So it has to come up a notch for trial well. Race number four in Sydney, Gator. Aaron from Tassie wants to know who have you got on top? I like the way beside the ocean run home last start out to 1500 metres and comes out of group races. Surely that gallop is a good chance. That's from Aaron. Yeah.
Speaker 17Look, I think 11 to 1500 second up is generally quite a task for most of these athletes. But he's looking for further. I got feel when I say that that sort of distance jump early in a prep. I think one more run, you know, and then I'll jump on is what I'm thinking.
Speaker 2Boys, what is middle earth preparation look like leading up to the Melbourne Cup? He has Nash on him this weekend, which seems like a statement to me. Keep up the good work. That's from Bob from Bathurst. Well, I know that Kira Mara or the team think that he is their best chance of Melbourne Cup. Call Melbourne Cup glory on that first Tuesday, November. Of course, he was placed last year. I think he's going towards the Caulfield Cup on the way to the Melbourne Cup here, Gator.
Speaker 17Yeah, that's a logical progression. He was obviously terrific in the race last year. Early signs this year might have a little bit more depth. Obviously, he was right with goody two shoes in the Melbourne Cup. That horse has since gone back home and run really well against a couple that are coming here. So, yeah, look, I think he's certainly on the radar
Speaker 2for many in their doubles, I think. Does Gator have Shadow VAR in race five at Caulfield just going to the front and winning?
Speaker 17Look, she's going to be mighty hard to beat. The last three times she's been at 1,200, she's won them all. She beat the males first up. Patton helped, but she was tough. I like how tough she was. Gate one, she will lead inside. There's a bit of pressure, though, you know, on paper. And what I don't know yet is will gate one be an advantage? Or disadvantage or even? I think there's a great roughy in this race. Her name's Flyer. She's 33 to one. She beat Shadow VAR last prep and meets her six kilos better. I thought her win last time was terrific. So I think she's criminally underrated, Flyer, and she should be about $6 and she's 34 of them.
Speaker 2McNeil stakes intrigues with the horses on a Guinness path and a Cornwall path. Can you break down which horses go where and how important and the barrier is over the 1200 at Caulfield. I'll try and ask you, I'll answer the first question. Seize the day, I'm unsure, but maybe the cool more for that son of I'm invincible. Unit five, I think they're going to try and get to the cool more there. Confederation's a guineas horse. American Eagle, Sam Friedman's going to make up his mind whether they go down a guineas path or a cool more path. Saturday will tell them basically which way they should be going. And Etheria is a thousand guineas horse and so is Autumn Lover. That's what I know so far, Gator. Barriers in this race, how important are they?
Speaker 17So, Caulfield 1200 or sprint races, chute races, there's only the one turn. Barriers never really put me off too much. What's more important is the pattern on the day. So, if you draw in in those chute races and the fence is off, it can be problematic. If you draw wide and the fence is on fire, you're in trouble.
Speaker 2Hey, Gator, did you see Nash Rilla's ride? Nash Rilla's ride yesterday at Canterbury Park. It was aboard, of course, Joe Pride's horse, Castle John. He says, what about Nash's ride yesterday? Will he do it again in the Memsie? What do you reckon?
Speaker 17Yeah, I think Baywatch is a clear winning hope. I just don't know if we are on a wetter than a soft five. Obviously, what he's been able to do is run really fast time. And he's 2,400 metre winds. You know, we referenced that earlier. In one of those, he beat Jimmy Starr, his favourite here. So, look, I think it was a bone-dry track. I'd probably have him on top, you know. But just with a bit of rain about Friday, I've just lent to Jimmy Starr.

Speaker 17Yeah, I certainly listen to the trainers because, you know, they know their athletes better than I do. But you've got to trust your eye on what you see. Look, he couldn't have trialled much better, that latest heat. But they're just... The general rule is they're just really hard to win on debut. You've got to be pretty damn good.

And after being held up for a while, for a long way down that straight trial, well, and Damian Lane is on, I think this filly has some talent. Good on you, Bailey. And as Danny O'Brien pointed out, she's ready to run a big race. And her main aim, if everything goes to plan, will be the 1,000 guineas. Gator, you're keen on Bullinette Princess as one of the best roughies of the day?
Speaker 17Yeah, look, I think with the blinkers on here, third up, she won third up last prep. She was terrific given the pattern of the day at Caulfield. She certainly won't be the first nor the last to win their next start after running on, against a track buyer.
Speaker 2Hi, Gene Gator. Do you feel that GigaKick's last spring carnival and what races do you feel it would be suited to this spring? That's from Corey. I reckon the Manicato's got his name written all over it this time around, Gator, for GigaKick. Yeah, fair call.

Speaker 17He's genuinely exciting, isn't he? You can make a case he should be unbeaten. He did walk in fresh. He ran tight. He's home with weight. So he's on top. I'm going to have a saver on Stagnum at double figures.
Speaker 2It's an interesting horse, Mr Miller, because Aussie Curd told us that if they can get into the Epsom, he'll be a horse that'll be in the market there, definitely in the top five of betting. So that is interesting. They've got a big opinion of that Kiwi, but they need to race him to try and get his points up so he can get a start in a race like the Epsom. And I like the confidence with Stagnum there because Michael Hawks gave us a good push with that Gala. Gallop of this morning. Hey, G, Darren again from Canberra. What does Gator think of Sir Barge in the Memsie?
Speaker 17Yeah, look, he's probably similar to a couple of others. The group one weight for age is maybe a bar that's a little too high for him to win the race, but he's trialling really well. He's got former and a few of these. Look, I think he'll run well without winning.
Speaker 2Gator's thoughts on Rotarra Tarki in Caulfield. Expecting it to settle behind Shadow VAR and go very close. Yeah, she's a bit underrated, isn't she?
Speaker 17She's not getting any younger, sure, but she always trials well and she won a similar race, I think, first up London Springs. She got an easy lead that day on a bit of a leader's track. So I'm just working around her as a key winning hope, but not out of it.
Speaker 2What's your take on Revengeance in the San Domenico this weekend, Gator?
Speaker 17Yeah, fifth pick. You know, I think there's a couple that I'm certainly happy to have ahead, but his latest trial was good. He beat Music Time. He's in this race. He beat Spicy Miss in a Golden Gift. He had that by choice form. You can tie that in through Pembrey last week and a few of those. So, yeah, fifth top rated runner.
Speaker 2Hey, lads. What do we do with Banavara and the Heatherly? Started at $1.70 and had a big boom on her Australian debut. Now getting $12. Thoughts? That's from Murph from the Gold Coast.
Speaker 17Yeah, it was long odds on there, no doubt. And it was beaten, as we know. Look, trialed well. I'm not sure what to make of the heat. Yellow jersey raced away from the heat. But it was only a trial. You know, and the stable aren't known for their trial heroics. But, look, I've got yellow jersey on top. Banavara is sixth top rated runner.
Speaker 2Hey, Gareth, when Big Papa, I think that's you, Gator, Big Papa, does the form, how important is the side form line? For example, when the Magnus and Churchill's are racing on a wet track, I feel very confident. That's from Matt.
Speaker 17Yeah, so as a blanket rule, I tend to shy away from blankets. Blanket rules, you know, like those. You know, I think each athlete's different, you know. And, you know, we often use the analogy that Ian Thorpe's brother can't swim. And so I like to just treat them all as individual athletes rather than have those blanket rules.
Speaker 2But every little bit helps, right? It does. Hey, lads, love the show. So can we normalise Pikey doing the trip across the country to ride Cosmic Crusader again? Cosmic Crusader's ride. Last week was epic. Does he have the class over this amazing Memsie Field? This is Cosmic Crusader. Does he have the class to win from Gator 11, basically Gator?
Speaker 17Look, I think he'll run well. Yeah. His two wins have been terrific, haven't they? So, look, I'm not sure. It's going to come down to price for me. And at the moment, he's around $5. I don't think, I think that's too thin, you know, for him to take those odds of him beating Angel Cafford or beating... Beating Baywalk, beating Jimmy Starr, home, but he does have a fitness edge.

Speaker 17Best ruffy, you've mentioned her, race five, number seven flyer, who's beaten Shadow of Our Home in the past and is eight times the price for some reason. So I'll leave this track with her, but she's a great ruffy, I think. In Sydney, I don't really have anything at a price on top. I think it's a pretty up and down sort of day. Perhaps those outside. You know, he's in the market. Race six, Harry got styles, I think, can run well. He's 20-odd to one.
Speaker 2Do you just take $7.50 for another wheel, even though he's drawn the car park there, Gator?
Speaker 17What I'll know by race 10 is how this track's playing and I'll know how dry it is. So I think with another wheel, it's drier the better. Soft five's okay. Six, I get nervous whether I risk. His trial was great and he's a group one winner. Claim helps. Look, I'm happy with him on top, but it'll come down to... Because we've got 5,000 lead-up races before race. Yeah, so we can have a good look at how the track's playing, have a good look at the track condition and bet accordingly.
Speaker 2Hey, guys, does Gator think... What does Gator make of Chocolat's chances in race three tomorrow at Corfitt on Saturday? Had no luck two back and was strong through the line at Flemington last start. That's from Gary.
Speaker 17Yeah, I think she was a really good risk last time. She's got... Between runs back in trip, I knew she wouldn't quicken, but she was good through the line. Now gets back out to 2,000 metres. She's struck a pretty strong race. You know, she's got Dark Bonet and St. George in there and even this deal.
Speaker 2But I think she's a key player, fourth pick. Gator, what do you make of horses that pull up with cardiac arrhythmia and then they come out and win at their next start? That's from Mel. It seems to happen a lot, Mel. They should put out the form guide, I reckon.
Speaker 17Well, a lot of form guides do. Don't they? They tell you... Yes. Yeah, that if you've had that affliction and we know these athletes can bounce back really quickly from same. So it doesn't have any impact on them. In fact, I remember Joe Pride telling me one day that it's some of the best... Well, no, we were actually on course. I was TVN doing an interview and we were off camera and this horse just won it 20 to 1 and it was coming off with cardiac arrhythmia. And he said, before the camera was on, he said, sometimes it's the best prep because they just haven't had a hard run and they're fresh. And anyway, so it wasn't the last horse to win coming off that affliction. It won't be... It wasn't the first one, it'll be the last.
Speaker 2Can you ask Gator whether he ever cashes out or always lets it ride? That's from Anthony. The latter. Yes. I wouldn't expect nothing less from you there, Gator.

But if I did send it, and if I do have one, this is what it will look like. The last three races. So I'll go Blue Door in the Santa Monica Eltoff in race nine and Amazing Eagle race two. So we're going to come home like Burnbra, hopefully.
Speaker 2If some people are saying Gator the Dark Bonnie will be winning a Caulfield Cup, surely it wins Saturday's race.
Speaker 17Look, I think he's either a 2,500 metre horse or he's not much good because he doesn't quicken, but then he gets stronger and stronger in his races. I think he'll eat 2,000 metres. I'm tipping him on Saturday. He's not in my Caulfield Cup doubles, but I'm interested to see where he gets to in the prep.

Speaker 17Beat him three quarters of a length and they meet on similar weight terms. So, you know, I think he's a dangerous second pick. Why isn't Gator tip Sassapiel on top? Second top rated runner. Since they win everything, I'd probably back it. But she did enough first up without raving. Good wins last prep around group one and group two fillies. Clearly a winning hope. So she goes in everything.

Speaker 2really suit um but in the quaddi fourth pick sir delius um has he been passed the fit to run in a cox plate well he doesn't have to pass any scans to run in a cox plate only the melbourne cup so last year what they did is they did the scans before the cox plate which was a mistake because i think he would have been able to run in it really if they didn't do those scans he would have been able to compete in the corfield cup and then do the scans after the cox plate which he probably would have gone very close to winning and then they would have ruled him out of the melbourne cup but because they did the scans before the cox plate he was ruled out for both races but now since he's had that preparation back in sydney um he doesn't have to do those scans for the cox play so he just needs to do a scan for a melbourne cup if he goes down down that path which is highly unlikely i would imagine gator yeah i don't think

Speaker 18that we identified g five-year-old gelding's only had 11 starts for the one win but greg hickman's probably one of the most underrated trainers in sydney this horse has gone really well went out to a spell off a win g which i would say is a really good horse for a win and i think it's a always like and back-to-back trials around the horses like scenic point and incognito that bodes well enough for this galloper so superada one word is number five this week so it's s-u-p-e-r-a-t-a

Speaker 18yep brett and georgie cavanaugh obviously train up there at scone his trials at musclebrook back on the 19th of august beat a horse by the name of syllable g who comes out of trial quarter maybe two weeks ago and beat it pretty well so three-year-old gelding by farnan i really like these fun and see first up and at the trials they tend to be going really really well so this is a thousand meter trial after being let up 15 weeks at sa you'll head straight to the races off that and we know they're a bit of a plunge stable so we have to be quick to get the odds
Speaker 2about on the fritz also we know well stormy marco for chris wall is your number three trialler
Speaker 18yeah well all the way gee when this horse probably was going around uh in the brisbane uh winter but has some really really strong form lines obviously uh won a hawksbury race before then going on to run third in the jj actions behind uh tron bolt so i think maybe a later maturing compared to tron bolt and a couple others but the trials practice prep um it's had the one over sort of the seven 900 meters there behind refusing kieran star i really liked it maybe a sneaky left field horse who can make that progression to three now um and skip past a couple of the stable mates maybe that are already up in light so stormy marco goes in the
Speaker 2black book number two kieran star uh for kirimar yep gee comes through the zack's trial of stormy
Speaker 18marco probably a teeth talent as a two-year-old for the autumn didn't quite hit its straps but did win a couple of races and had some good formal lines around penbury and co so i think this horse has come back in terrific order was its first trial as well look for a second trial now but when kieran's horse has come back in terrific order it's first trial as well look for a second trial well in their first hit out gee i always take note because he doesn't push him a whole lot at the trials and they often when they do that means they've come back in great order so i think kieran star's one of those and check mate for luke pepper is your number one trialer check me gee yeah impressive horse uh this three-year-old colton i know you can sort of see on social media i put a video up for betsy with this horse and it's skipping away there at the camber knuckton trials 900 meters around incredibly fast time beat the horse's by 12 lengths i know you can look at that trial and go wow yes a lot of horses do this they get the race day and blow up but there's layers to this lukey pepper's an outstanding trainer he rarely even trials these horses geofficially he normally gets them fit at home gets them to the races first up with no official trials and even when he does trial them they're hard on the bridle so speaking to luke he didn't expect this for this horse to to put a gap in him like that he just wanted to have a solid hit out there but um they've always had opinion for this check me hopefully goes around maybe next week somewhere um it's ready to go the races off that and it's a very very impressive horse so i think they knock back some good offers from hong kong and they're going to race on so that's always

Speaker 18in our trial report jr i think back in uh the autumn i suggested it was a very very smart cult and then i think we're going to have to wait and see what happens next week i think it's going to be a very very smart cult and then we're going to have to wait and see what happens next week i think we had it last week you know they say talks is best three-year-old they're thrown in the deep end into san dominico stakes but the hawks have a phenomenal record off two trials and they send their horse to the races off one trial over the last year i think they've had two winners from 42 starters so always a good push when they do trial them twice and i think wild atlantic can blend into that race really well i think open 26 dolls or something around that so it's in the sevens but yep really

Speaker 18we are g we are we got uh gosford tomorrow interesting friday meeting but uh race two there number nine payton one comes out of black book zack lloyd o'shane charlton um and i'm not sure saturday g you're not sure if there's a lot that we want to touch on saturday it's a bit of a tricky meeting there um we'll stay away from their yellow jersey obviously goes around at caulfield short enough but that horse comes through the trial report too so probably payton tomorrow race to gosford and yellow jersey caulfield race nine

And then you also got a chance about a year ago, wasn't it, now that you went over to Europe to check out what that's all about, and you even got an opportunity to compete there.
Speaker 20Yeah, I've had a really great few seasons, getting good opportunities from trainers. And, yeah, there's a few good horses that have taken me around the country and I was able to go to France and then got an opportunity in Sweden. So I was able to do a bit of sightseeing and a bit of work around there. So, yeah, I can't complain so far.
Speaker 2So what are you looking forward to most about this trip, Geordie?
Speaker 19Yeah, obviously, like you said, it's a lot of a different calibre of racing to sort of what we do over here in the mainland. So it's sort of something to be challenged to adapt to their style of racing and, yeah, just to compete against, yeah, the Australasian's best young drivers.
Speaker 2Because they're not too aggressive over in New Zealand, are they, Geordie? They like to hand up at the 600. Oh, yeah, no. You won't do anything like that, will you? No, no. You'll just launch them.
Speaker 19No, exactly right. 100%. The more speed, the better, I say.
Speaker 2Ryan, who do you model yourself off? Like, do you have an idol that you look up to in the sport of harness racing?
Speaker 20Yeah, when Cam Hart first come to Sydney, he worked for my dad, Shane. And I got to spend a bit of time with him and was able to see him kind of come from the country and progress into a world-class driver. And, yeah, I've always, you know, stayed friends with him and looked up to him in his driving and to see, you know, what a job he's done from then to now. It's pretty cool.
Speaker 2So you boys put in a lot of hard work. So, Geordie, just describe a day for you.
Speaker 19Yeah, so I'd get up about six in the morning and, yeah, obviously work for Kate and Andy Gath. I've been here for, yeah, I'd say nearly five years now. So, yeah, come to the stables in the morning and sort of work. Till around lunchtime and then, yeah, usually either sort of get ready to head off to the races or if I, yeah, don't have a day or night at the races, so I just head back here at, yeah, three in the afternoon and, yeah, help feed up and just do that sort of thing. So, yeah, it keeps me busy and occupied. What about you, Ryan? Because are you based in Shepparton?
Speaker 20Yeah, family's based in Shepparton. Dad's just scaled back on a few horses now, so just recently. Doing a bit of work for Jess Tubbs at the moment around, just around the corner from Geordie. So, yeah, a bit of a stable change.
Speaker 2And so how many Ks a week would you do in the car there, Ryan?
Speaker 20Yeah, probably about the same as Geordie. I don't really count the Ks, but, you know, you can be up racing up to six or seven days a week, some weeks, so it all adds up.
Speaker 2Yeah. And, like, you get to compete on New Zealand Cup Day. You must be looking forward to that, Geordie.
Speaker 19Yeah, 100%. It's always, you always see the videos they post. It's always a great atmosphere and always, yeah, great days racing. So, yeah, to be out there a part of the actions, yeah, something I'll be really looking forward to do.
Speaker 2And what's it like working for Andy and Kate Gath? Legends of the sport. They've done so much in their time in this beautiful game that we love. So, what is it like working for Andy and Kate?
Speaker 19Nah, absolutely love it. They're always, yeah. Always willing to help out if you ever need it. And, yeah, they've been great to me, giving me plenty of, yeah, opportunities with the driving and stuff like that. And, yeah, you're always, always learning something new. There's, yeah, always something going on. So, nah, it's, yeah, I'll be forever grateful for, yeah, what they've done for me in the sport.
Speaker 2And what's it like talking to Catch A Wave? I know you had a couple of drives on him, I think, when Kate was out.
Speaker 19Yeah, no, he's a lot different at the races than what he is at home. Yeah, I saw it. When I drove him at the races, we, yeah, took a bit to get out onto the track. But once we were out there, it was smooth sailing. The best horse that you've driven there, Ryan?
Speaker 20Best horse? Can be hard to go past Fox Dan or Bay Biscay. They've had some really good seasons in the past two years. Yeah, and I'm, yeah, probably one of them.
Speaker 2And what's it like driving for MSU and Clayton Tonkin? How do we know if you're on the best ones or not? Do you get first preference or is it Mark Pitt?
Speaker 20No, I think Mark Pitt's their man most of the time. But I've been lucky enough to jump on some really handy ones of big chances and big races. So I definitely can't complain. And I've been lucky enough to be in a lot of good races in the last few years, which has been great.
Speaker 2Now, you're going to be trying to beat me in the running of the bulls this year. We embarrassed the Birchett boys last time around. Barry boys and all that. It was one of the sweetest moments that I can remember that I've had beating them on that day. But they reckon they'll get me this time around. And it's basically up to you, Ryan. So have you got one?
Speaker 20It was a great win by you, Gareth. Good horse you picked out. And it was very, very impressive. Yeah, it didn't go to plan for us this year. So we're going to have to come up with something to beat you. Yeah.
Speaker 2And how's it like training for the Birchett boys then?
Speaker 20Yeah, great. They've been really great supporters of Dad and my family. So, yeah, they've been great. We've all gone into the property there at Murchison and started up a pre-training business for thoroughbreds and standard breds. And we're all just great, great lifelong mates. And it's been great to work with them.
Speaker 2Now, your sister does a wonderful job with Wagering Wednesday, thanks to the Shepparton. Harness Racing Club. Michael Bellman, I've got a few text messages coming through today that he was able to get a winner for the Wagering Wednesday team. You've got some great drives tonight. It's a terrific night of harness racing with the heats of the Vic bred at Kilmore. Do you have a winner for us? We'll start off with you, Ryan, and then we'll go to you, Geordie.
Speaker 20Yeah, I've got a few tonight. It looks very competitive, so it's hard to really stamp a winner for me. I think my best chance from the draw would be Mount Barker Boy for Emmer and Clayton. And I think I might have five or six other drives that are big place chances as well. And, you know, it wouldn't surprise me if they popped up.
Speaker 2All right, then, Geordie, do you have a winner for us?
Speaker 19No, probably not a winner. But, yeah, there's a little horse, Sriracha, that I'm driving. He was an impressive winner, yeah, last week at Shepparton. So he's got a nice inside background. So I think, yeah, he'll be up against it a little bit today. But he'll be a good one to follow.

Speaker 21ready to go launch the spring yeah yeah it comes around pretty quickly it does uh but three months of incredible racing just about to kick off this saturday at the mimsy stakes and goes all the way through to the jericho cup at the end of november can't wait yeah we had a briefing with racing
Speaker 2victoria was great last thursday but it just blows me away the significance of our spring carnival
Speaker 21for this great city and state yeah well it's it's something like 785 million dollar economic value add it's the second biggest major event in australia so significant from a cultural perspective here in victoria um it's right across the states not just the city you know there's 26 country cups um there's so many opportunities to engage the communities right across the state it's one of australia's best um sporting events by far do you think that um all the major governments understand that these days we've certainly left no stone unturned in terms of hammering the message um and you would have seen we've been out there talking about the size and scale and contribution significance of the industry i think it's well understood but it's important that they do because we've got some future funding potentially at risk in the state elections coming up in a couple of months so we're working really really hard to advocate for the industry and all the
Speaker 2good people that we support we might get you a little close to that microphone but um there's plenty of questions i need to ask you first of all the gambling reforms with the advertising now it's going to come into play on the 1st of january 2027 you've been quoted in recent times and you briefed the media as well last week that it could cost this industry 10 million dollars um yeah i
Speaker 21mean we need to work through that and understand the detail um but in in that order of magnitude it's not out of the question um you know and that's a challenge we're with these external forces that impact on the industry you know can catch you out and we've got to respond to that like we we need to uh in other circumstances we spoke the other day at our meeting about the the great things that i'm i'm really proud of and that our team have done to take costs out of the industry business model and how much you've taken around 20 million dollars yeah 20 million dollars uh probably a little bit more than that truth be told over the last three years some really tough decisions we had to make that we forecasted when i when i took over as the ceo um and you know we've reduced the amount of money we've put into the industry and we've reduced our head count by something like 12 those costs have come out we've restructured a lot of our business portfolios and programs and when we do that so that we've got funds available to invest back into the industry particularly into the participant economy well you
Speaker 2have to make more cuts if you're going to lose 10 million dollars because of these reforms well
Speaker 21potentially that that's part of it um and that's an ongoing challenge for us i think the other thing too is understanding whether there's actually going to be some positive benefits flowing back to the industry or not because of course we have one of australia's biggest sports media businesses yeah with racing.com and our associated assets that we operate and you know where there's a potential reduction now in in wagering advertising in mainstream broadcasts in in sports racing does have some carve out and you know potentially our inventory becomes a more valuable opportunity for wagering operators who still want to communicate with with punters and so you know what are those benefits going to be so whilst there could be a hit to overall wagering engagement and turnover on one hand there may be some offset through the fact that we have such um wonderful media assets is it
Speaker 2a challenge then to make sure that you you've cut back 20 million dollars but to make sure that you are catering for the clubs and the participants like um is that a fine balance these days aaron because you've done a pretty good job really um since you've taken over as the boss of race victoria
Speaker 21well that's thanks to the team behind me of course and and many other people in the industry who've provided support and i think we're pretty well aligned around a lot of things but you know you can't always please everyone and people do come at issues from different perspectives and that's okay the the role of the ceo is to make those tough trade-offs and choices you're not going to please everyone all the time but you have to be guided by what is in the best long-term interest of the industry and i think that's the unique role of racing victoria or any pra at all the different stakeholders that we need to support we're thinking about how the industry's sustainable long term it continues to grow and in particular how the people who have everything invested in the industry personally you know in a very deep way how we can sustain their businesses
Speaker 2and participation going forwards in in today's world is this dual place for three clubs um well
Speaker 21especially like if you probably wouldn't design it that way if you started from scratch um but you know they they all offer something different and i think that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's something uniquely different from a consumer perspective and they could still do that potentially under a different structure but that's the structure that we've got to work with at the moment um it does make it challenging in terms of you know decision making communications governance you know i reckon there's a fair bit of duplication um and we were saying before about um all the work we're doing with government and and you know around the reforms we fight so hard for every dollar to come in the top of the business model um you know we've got to you know make sure that we invest that wisely and i think there's a lot of duplication in the structure at the moment is it challenging in a way being the
Speaker 2ceo of a pra trying to get these clubs to work together or do you think that they work pretty
Speaker 21well together well it on at times they do and at times you know they they're motivated to look after the interests of their their members right and we've got to find a way to sort of harness the best of what everyone does and in sort of be clear around what's what's the best role that
Speaker 2everyone can play in the structure overall if you have 60 000 at a cox plate at flemington yep um that would be pretty amazing yeah and we should get that i reckon what are you expecting well i
Speaker 21think i think they're looking at 40 to 50. i think that the capacity does sort of tap out around them because they don't have the um the marquee facilities and the setup you know the bird cage and all that won't be there for the cox plate day so you're working within the existing fix infrastructure but you know a 40 to 50 000 crowd would be an amazing outcome and then how do you go
Speaker 2and tell the racing fan that we're going back to mooney valley where the capacity will be 15 000.
Speaker 21yeah and and around about what they've been used to previously at the valley right so you know that that's a challenge um and lots has been written about this topic i saw that in the article i'll
Speaker 2get that yeah i'll get to that in just a moment but um you know i think it's it's it's all about
Speaker 21being comfortable from from our perspective with the the amenity and the experience it has to be world class right this is more than just a race for mooney valley it's it's important to the victorian brand victoria brand victoria racing it's important to the customers that we're fighting hard to attract and retain that we are able to deliver an appropriate customer experience so how does that
Speaker 2work it's mooney valley's race isn't it the cox plate yep um if they want to run a mooney valley
Speaker 21they can run it at mooney valley regardless or can you step racing victoria schedules the races yeah we ultimately um program races where we choose to see fit you know they have um had that race for hundreds of years uh not quite well 150 plus years um but that would be our decision and the decision to program the race back at the mooney valley the new mooney valley track is something that you know we'll consider across a number of different factors that have been well reported but i think that's appropriate and i think the club understands that they understand that's that's an appropriate um
Speaker 2framework as well yeah do you think it'll happen in 2027 or do you have your doubts
Speaker 21well i i haven't seen enough yet to make a call right i'm aware of what's conceptually planned it's pretty clear there won't be a permanent grandstand and and i don't think there's going to be grandstands of the kinds that we've seen over the last hundreds of years anyway i think you know facilities have moved on from that but some kind of um you know combination of fixed and i don't like using the word temporary because it implies something really sort of basic and casual but you look at the facilities uh these days at the australian grand prix in pit lane you know where the the best drivers and prima donnas in the world are hosted in these amazing facilities you know if it's good enough for them potentially it's good enough for for our customers and fans and the australian open the birdcage infrastructure but we haven't seen enough yet i can't make that it's a difficult one i talked to the people there of
Speaker 2the brisbane racing club recently about their grandstand how much that's going to cost it's but you probably only need a grandstand at mooney valley for the one weekend of the year yeah um so like how much do you spend on a grandstand that hardly would be used in a way so and they've got the responsibility to their club and the members mooney valley to get that right
Speaker 21that's right um but also i think they understand what we're what we're talking about where we're coming from that the experience is going to be a big part of that and i think that's a big part of that the experience needs to be suitable for one of australia's greatest races so you know there's no doubt we're going to have an amazing racetrack facility yeah next year right which should be capable of hosting a large number of the races that mooney valley previously held the night meetings etc and all that the question probably is more around the bigger race events and we're working really closely with the club i want to make that point you know the engagement between mooney valley and racing victoria is very
Speaker 2is very strong and active yeah um outside of the the cox plate like it's it plays an important part doesn't it mooney valley and you can see with the turnover and the figures that you showed us at that briefing there last thursday is that you've had to budget and try and um work out a plan to make sure that you are covering the losses because Moonee Valley is out of action.
Speaker 21Yeah, we have. And we've seen, we budgeted for that downturn for this year. We're in an unprecedented period of time where tracks are unavailable and we're managing through the rest of the network. Moving the Moonee Valley races away to Cranbourne and Pakenham has probably seen a 15% to 20% reduction in turnover on a relative basis, which is around what we expected. But it sort of highlights the importance of getting Moonee Valley back online because punters, especially the weekend Saturday punters, they want to bet on those proven well-known tracks. And there's a premium associated with that.
Speaker 2What did you make of the article Danny Russell wrote this morning in the Age newspaper regarding that? And he mentioned Jonathan Munns, who is the president of the Owners Association. And the vice chairperson now of the MRC that he was the man that led the charge regarding maybe a proposed merger with the MRC and to Moonee Valley. Do you think that will happen or any merger?
Speaker 21Well, do I think it will happen? I think it probably should happen and needs to happen at some point. And that's no surprise. What I'm saying is no surprise to any of the clubs who've had these conversations. We all share the same interest in looking forwards and working out what's a sustainable model. Look like it's hard to get there for sure. You know, in terms of that specific proposal, obviously the Moonee Valley commented on that and it's, you know, it's theirs to comment on. But now long term, I am very interested to make sure that the industry model is a sustainable one for everyone's benefit.
Speaker 2The funding model, when you first came into the job, you wanted to make sure that you work with all of the different bodies and consult with them. Obviously, you're not going to be able to do that. You're not going to be able to do that. You're not going to be able to do that. Obviously, you're not going to be able to do that. Obviously, you're not going to be able to do that. Obviously, you're not going to be able to do that. Obviously, make sure that you cut back a little bit with Racing Victorian and then have a sustainable revenue model from a wagering perspective. You've been able to achieve that with obviously some different challenges along the way. Are you able now to sustain that revenue stream back into the industry to keep the prize money up without the help from the clubs?
Speaker 21Yeah, look, we hope so. But then obviously we have these externalities and the federal government advertising reforms as an example of something that's going to be impactful that we're just going to have to manage like we've managed other things. But if you take that to the side, the trends have been more positive recently. We ended up a year as the most watched, the most wagered and the most attended of any racing product. And that's a bit of a catch cry for me at the moment. And people will hear me say that a lot. And they should be proud of that because Victoria is the number one jurisdiction. But from a wagering perspective, we're still $7.4 billion in turnover. I make that probably 15%, 20% more than the next jurisdiction. We don't run as many races. That's a big number, isn't it?
Speaker 220% more than, say, New South Wales.
Speaker 21Yeah, we are doing well. All the things that we can control, we put on the best product, right? And we've got the widest media distribution. I think that is, and I've said this before, a real significant part of why we outperform, we punch above our limits. New South Wales has got a better deal with the government. They do. And that's the thing I can't sort of yet overcome. And that probably puts them in a position to be investing more enterprise money. So for all the things that we're doing well that are in our control, that's one factor where we fall behind, unfortunately.
Speaker 2You don't think people understand that enough, that you can do the job that you're doing and have the results that you've been able to achieve. And as you said, 15% to 20% stronger across the board. And I think that's one of the things that we've got to do. And I think that's one of the things that we've got to do. And I think that's one of the things that we've got to do. And I think that's one of the things that we've got to do. And I think that's one of the things compared to say New South Wales, but they do have a better deal with the government. Can you go to our government in Victoria and say, well, why can't we have the same deal as New South Wales?
Speaker 21Yeah, well. How hard is that? You can try. And we certainly have been and won't stop. That's for sure. And we can make a strong case because racing is so important. And that's well acknowledged. Our economic contribution, the events, et cetera, so we are an industry worth investing in if the funds were available. I don't think that's in question. The question is, are the funds available here in Victoria? And that's probably our problem. Both sides of politics are very, very strong supporters of the racing industry. So it's not a question of support or intent. The cupboard may be bare. And that's the challenge that we face. Is that your biggest challenge? I think it is. We've got some funding that we've got to roll over through this election process as well. So we're putting... We're putting a lot of attention into that. And as I said before, we're no stone unturned in terms of advocating our case. Yeah.
Speaker 2Big spring coming up, the Memsie Stakes.
Speaker 21Yeah.
Speaker 2Jeez, the racing's like... The Wink Stakes was sensational last week, but it's one of the better Memsies that I can recall.
Speaker 21Yeah, incredible. I think I was looking today out of the field of 12, nine Group 1 winners. We've got the Trive Pector from last year. You know, some amazing horses. It's set up to... It's set up to really launch the spring. So, you know, get excited, punters. And the rest of the card too looks pretty good.
Speaker 2Yeah, it's a beauty. Even Joseph O'Brien, we had Kevin Blake, he's racing manager today. He's going to have a crack at trying to win his third Melbourne Cup. Yeah. He could have five or six runners. What's the perfect number of international runners compared to the locals for a Melbourne Cup?
Speaker 21Hard question. I think it's good to have international runners to bring that, you know, global appeal. It's a global race, let's face it. It's the race that stops you from winning. It stops the nation here, but everyone knows about it internationally and it's part of, again, brand Victoria. You know, we've sort of averaged maybe about 10 internationals the last couple of years. That seems to be a good amount and that's probably where we'll end up. Paul Bloodworth was getting pretty excited about the O'Brien string. Yeah. He's sort of saying it might be six or seven. So, yeah, that looks like the number. I didn't hear your session this morning.
Speaker 2No, he said, I think they'll... I think at the moment they've got about 10 horses that they would love to... that get into the Melbourne Cup. And I think the best part about that is that there's a lot of Australian owners that have identified Joseph as a trainer that can have a horse that competes in Europe and then he has the ability to win a Melbourne Cup. That's right. I think three or four of them are Australian connections.
Speaker 21And if they do win, the prize money will stay here and hopefully be reinvested again.
Speaker 2And I think the best part about it as well, you get an owner like JP McManus, one of the biggest owners in world racing that wants to win a Melbourne Cup. Yeah.
Speaker 21Yeah. Well, hopefully he comes back out and gets to the caller card again. Yeah. He's a big punter on the day too.
Speaker 2A few questions coming through. Are you confident that you can sustain prize money going into the future with the challenges that you face?
Speaker 21Yeah, that's a bit of an off star for us. From outside sources, yeah. Yeah. Well, that's what we're trying to maximise. So restoring the financial position has been very much directed towards our ability to then increase prize money. And as we know, prize money kind of undersells what it is. That's really salaries and wages for trainers and jockeys and returns for owners that are in investing heavily in the sport. So that's a number one priority for us.
Speaker 2How do you think the Metro tracks have performed this year? Yeah, they've been... Especially with the extra workload.
Speaker 21Well, I think that's the point. Yeah. Especially with the extra workload. I think, you know, cut some slack there because of that. And you were at our session the other day and people talk a lot about abandonments and moves and changes. The numbers show that the network has held up really, really well. I think some of the stats we took you through showed that, you know, 50% less, less moves and changes year on year. Over the last three years, our rate of abandonment is only something like two and a bit percent. It's about a third of New South Wales and, you know, half of Queensland. So, you know, the stats show we're actually going pretty well across the network.
Speaker 2Talking to Troy Corsett, the president of the Australian Trainers Association on the Wednesday Agenda yesterday, he mentioned that he would love to see more racing on the Pakenham synthetic track. Even a Saturday meeting going forward. Yeah. Your thoughts on that? And there was even talk that they don't want synthetic racing anymore, Southside racing.
Speaker 21Well, I think Southside racing, their priority is to try and get another inside grass track at some point. And, you know, there's still a couple of years left on the lifespan of their current Pakenham synthetic track. These are big decisions, you know, they cost a lot of money. And in Victoria, the cost of creating a synthetic track is in the order of sort of six to eight million dollars. You've got to spend a lot of money on that. And you've got to spend a bit of money to maintain them for whatever reason. But, you know, it was interesting to hear the trainers saying, well, we love synthetic tracks and we support it.
Speaker 2I showed them the numbers that you gave me and they all agreed, basically. Now, I did have a few calls from some different trainers saying that couldn't happen. But the punters like to punt on the synthetic meetings these days. Yeah. Because at least you know what you're going to get. Yeah.
Speaker 21You've got certainty of the sort of conditions and going, et cetera. And I think the numbers showed the largest numbers in the last three years on a broadly equivalent race basis. And these are, you know, country midweek races that you're comparing to just for context. But the relativity is something between eight and 15 percent over the last three years. It's actually 15 percent, 8 percent and broadly 15 percent this last year gone. So there can be a premium for it. And there's obviously a market for it from a punter's perspective. But it's about, you know, what's the return on investment? But no doubt. out that they're valuable from an insurance perspective. you know across the network we're very lucky to be able to have two synthetic tracks to move races to rather than abandon them and keep the show going um so it's going to be an interesting conversation saturday racing not sure just yet yes um you know they do run night time as well right so you know that that could be interesting i think saturday's punters want to bet on the yeah

Speaker 21how do you go about doing that yeah i think we're we're doing the right things right we've got that's having confidence that you've got consistently good tracks and facilities right and we've got a variety of great tracks and facilities and we've held up despite some extremely poor weather and and you know mooney valley being closed so that's that's really important very fundamental and underappreciated you know the the other side of it is um programming great races that are competitive with strong field sizes and that's a real focus for us we deliberately took some meetings out of the program this year there were about 160 less races year on year and that's about better matching to the horse population so that we've got strong field sizes that punters can bet into with depth uh you know and also marketing and promoting it and we're the most widely available product you can see a victorian thoroughbred race on every single platform um anywhere you want right and that's been really important in terms of encouraging punters to bet on victorian racing which is the best racing product in australia and that is
Speaker 2important because sustainability of racing is important and that's been really important racing i would imagine is another we've got to keep a close eye on because it's not easy to it's it's it's not cheap to have a horse in training and that means you've got to have

Speaker 21ceo yeah well i think i think um certainly seeing some return to prize money growth and you know growth in returns to participants is is the priority i would like to think that we make some progress around industry structure and efficiency and see some more alignment because i think we can we can grow even further if we can simplify and coordinate a bit better um they're probably two big picture things and continuing to invest in our infrastructure tracks and facilities as as we have been have you done the form yet for saturday uh no not not much mate i think uh jimmy star obviously looks set for the for the memsy if i gave you a hundred dollars you'd have it on jimmy jimmy star although um as a roughy if i if i could take an each way bet i reckon planet red's going to be a horse to watch maybe not this week but through the spring i think um shadavar i reckon i spoke to big joe the other day and uh they're very confident that horse is flying and credit to them that that camp's going really well so um i live another day you know can that become a contender so there's some great races so

Speaker 22Yeah, look, she's pretty good. We've had a couple of little setbacks with her feet, which is nothing new. We've sort of had to fight that her whole career, but it's got a little bit worse. It's preparation, but, yeah, happy with where she's at. She's had three trials, a little bit of a gap between her last trial, obviously, but we sort of had her pretty right, pretty fit. So, yeah, look, I think she'll go well tomorrow.
Speaker 13Yeah, because you had her ready to go a few weeks ago, didn't you?
Speaker 22Yeah, I had her ready for the bow fight, and I was trying to get a bit of black type in her name under a page for her owner and her breeder, Greg McCrossie, but it didn't. It didn't eventuate, so here we are now. Yeah.
Speaker 2I mean, it's pinned deep. The Gangemi's a flying September born. Are you confident that you can win? You're around three, I think.
Speaker 22Yeah, look, she's pretty hard. Yeah, she's a good 1,000-metre horse. She's a true 1,000-metre horse. Yeah, at her best, I think she'd be definitely more than a good chance against that sort of field. So, look, like I say, we did line her up to go on a bow fight, so we sort of got that opinion. Yeah, I'm pretty happy with her leading into the race going.
Speaker 2Jeez, internal wines knocking on the door.
Speaker 22Yeah, she's a bit stiff. She's drawn some bad barriers, and she just doesn't seem to get behind the right horse tracking up into the race. But, yeah, look, she's been a model of consistency. She's definitely backing up from last Saturday. She's had a few nine-day backups, and she's gone well, so I still expect her to run well tomorrow. I think she'll get the right run. She should be fairly hard to beat. Can six-shooter win?
Speaker 2First up.
Speaker 22Well, his record says no on his past history. We don't normally trial him on Mondays and race him on Saturdays, but there was nothing the week later. So he's bouncing around. He's very well in himself, so maybe that might be something different, might work with him, so we'll give that a crack and see how we go. He's been in a long time. He's actually hurt himself a couple of times on his own esteem. He's a bit of a... enigma of the horse. He's hurt himself in his box, and then he ripped his jaw open in the truck on his way home. So he's been up a long time, so he's very forward. If he backs up from the trial, he's definitely an each-way chance.

Speaker 23Eagle Farm will have a good track. The weather's fine. We'll go with the earlier races, similar to last week. Race one, horse number four, Spirit of Bardi. I think she looks really well placed. She's had a freshen up. She drops back to 1,000 metres. Get Bella Youngry to ride. There's no one riding up here any better than Bella at the moment. She takes three off. Look, she's run into Grinzinger Champ at her past three starts. Grinzinger Champ goes up. And again in the later race. But I think Bardi will be absolutely wrapped to see the back of Grinzinger Champ. So, I think she can win. I think she'll be nice and sharp with that freshen up. So, race one, number four, Spirit of Bardi, not Grinzinger Champ. Race two, horse number 11, Sarah Sonnets. Now, the distance race here, Sarah Sonnets is trained by Team C. She's on the gold. That win, too, wow, she was impressive.
Speaker 2Hey, Chris, we might give you a call, mate. It's just breaking up a little bit there with the... Connection. So, we'll give you a call and get you on the phone. So, at the moment, he likes Spirit of Bardi. Jeez, young Bella Youngberry. I've been watching her closely. She sits well, doesn't she? And she gets a lot out of her horses. She is a young gun there in Queensland. She'll outright her claim pretty quickly, I reckon. Especially when she's getting the opportunities that she is getting at the moment with Tony Golan. So, he likes Spirit of Bardi in race one. And in race two, he was just explaining. Why he likes Sarah Sonnets. Is he ready to go, Chris? Oh, he's not far away. So, at the moment, we've got race one, number four, and race two, number 11. Welcome back, Chris. Oh, you were just explaining to us why you like Sarah Sonnets.
Speaker 23Yeah, sorry about that. Don't know what happened there. Yeah, number 11, Sarah Sonnets. She's only had a handful of starts. But that win at the Gold Coast two-back, she just bolted up to them at the top of the straight. And she's a horse that travels really well in her races. I think she's up to winning something like this. And I do like her freshen with the step-up in distance. So, we can back her each way. Race two, number 11, Sarah Sonnets. And I think the best bet of the day is race four, number one, exceed the sale. Tony Golan's got this one going so well at the moment. Only had a handful of starts. Three starts for two wins and a third on debut. She's so strong to the line. Extra 50 metres won't worry her. Chelsea Baker rides her really well and takes three off. So, she'll only rise two kilos on that fast start win. I think she can win again. So, yeah. Get the money early. And look, some of these later races, there's lots of emergencies, lots of dual acceptors. So, they're a bit hard to work out at the moment. But the earlier races are a lot easier to work through. So, we'll go with those earlier ones.

Speaker 24I mean, a fortnight ago, we only got two races in. The last six were abandoned as we found rocks on the track, which is essentially the base of the track coming back to the surface. So, there was two weeks of some pretty substantial remedial work. I think the track staff were probably averaging about 10,000 miles an hour. Speaker 24yeah froggy and barry together they've uh i don't know how many minutes winners they've teamed up for but um they had a had a few yesterday i mean barry campbell had 50 winners last season from less than 200 starters his strike rate was about 30 and he's at it again he had three winners there yesterday barry i mentioned hartman who broke the 1150 meter track record tusker g will potentially go to the golden mile and could be a seven four cup horse early in 2027 that uh hoolahan was a good winner there too so i mean barry would be hard pressed to match the strike rate he got last year but with the horses he's got in his stable i think he's every chance to do so now can the

They're both drawn out in box eight. So we'll be cheering them on. They're outsiders, but you know we embrace that down here in Tassie G.

Speaker 2And Weekend Harness, I've enjoyed the harness racing. I've been following it since I was in Tasmania there a few weeks back, and we've got a good Sunday afternoon program coming up at Launceston.
Speaker 24Yeah, we do. I mean, it's a good time of year. Of course, you were down a few weeks back to the boat side, some good races on, and the harness has sort of slipped into the afternoon slots that have been vacated by the thoroughbreds. So I know the participants are sort of all for the Sunday afternoons rather than late nights on a Sunday, and the wagering's pretty comparable. So, yeah, it's, again, a pretty decent trial that we'll get through August, and, yeah, Launceston's hosting a good card on Sunday afternoon.

Unfortunately, if ever, has to jump from Box 8 against some of the best sprinters in the land, and Mick joins us now. G'day, Mick. How you going? Good, thanks, mate. Speaker 25I'd like to think so, but, like statistics tell you, don't they, the 8 box, it's a bit hard, especially against the best in the land, but he did trial very well. I'm very happy with his trial. If he could replicate those sectionals, well, then, you know, he's going to be in the leading division, you'd think.
Speaker 2Yeah. So, just explain that trial for us at Sand, down.
Speaker 25Yeah, well, I flew over Saturday afternoon with him, and I stayed down at Brendan Purcell's, my mate down at Lara. Took him down Monday night, 5 dead, 1870, which is excellent. And then just sort of dropped off a little bit on the run home, 29.43, but I was happy with that.
Speaker 2Yeah. So, he just... Needs a little bit of luck. Is there a chance that he could, like, is there a chance that he could be in the firing line as they go out of the home straight for the first time?
Speaker 25Well, if he runs 5 dead...
Speaker 2Yeah, look out.
Speaker 25I'd say that, you know, there's a chance, yeah. Look, I've got a big opinion of this dog. I've had some good dogs over the years, but none better than this fella here. He's done a great job since he's been down in Tassie here with me, and he's only had 25 starts. He's had a few, probably about 5 before he came over. So, he's done a great job for me, and he's improving all the time.
Speaker 2Jeez, it's disappointing that you draw an 8. Like, you probably think that you can... Well, you still have a chance from box 8, but if you had box 1, would it be game on?
Speaker 25Yeah, I wanted to draw one, two or three. But once just in his last start there, he absolutely sizzled. He said, I think it's very close to a record for the second section. I went 29.21, which... Which is probably one of the quickest runs been run there for quite a while.

Speaker 25So, no, he's a very, very smart customer, this fella.
Speaker 2Hey, Mick, you're a Hall of Fame greyhound trainer in Tassie. How is everyone going with what the government's doing to your sport at the moment?
Speaker 25Not good. No. Not good. We're in limbo.

Speaker 25He's shelved the bill for the Tom Byrne thing, and it's not a good feeling to be where we're at. You know, at the moment, we just don't know what's ahead of us. They still intend to try and phase us out, but they haven't got the numbers in the upper house. And, you know, yeah, no, it's not a really good place to be at the moment, but we can't do much about it. We've just got to soldier on and hope that there's a change of government next election and Labour are backing us to the hilt, One Nation. Yeah, I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing. And they've polled very well down here in the latest poll, so I'm tipping there will be a change of government here.
Speaker 2It's just not really fair, is it, the damage that they're doing to people with that uncertainty and then making stuff up? It's not. There's good people they're treating just like it's not fair.
Speaker 25Yeah, no, it's treated very unfairly, and it's taken its toll. Look, I've been sort of in fairly well, you know, help and fight this off, and it does drain you after a while.
Speaker 2Yeah, especially when they paint the pictures of people who don't understand that, like, Graham, people are not good people. Like, how dare they? How dare they do what they're doing? And they don't understand, and that's the sad part about it.
Speaker 25Well, the antis, they're just fanatics, and you can't beat them. They're radicals, and unfortunately, you know, like, they can say whatever they want to say, but the minute we bite, anyone bites back over here, you get fined by the integrity unit for, you know, trying to put our point of view across.

King House is a very, very smart pup, probably as quick a pup as I've had in the kennel for quite a while, and Gus, the jet in race nine, he's a group one winner, and he's pretty well graded going into a grade five, so I expect him to salute tonight, so, no, I've got some nice little dogs in the kennel at the moment.
