for the golden rose of course the big race for the what happened there today regarding the big news in australian racing and big news in australian sport with peter volandes officially um announcing that he will be leaving racing new south wales and a statement from racing new south wales earlier this morning it reads racing new south wales today announced that its long-serving chief executive peter volandes am will leave his role at the end of his current contract after an extraordinary period of leadership that has transformed thoroughbred racing in new south wales the entire australian racing industry mr volandes has served as chief executive of racing new south wales since 2004 during which time he has been the driving force behind unprecedented growth in rage wagering revenues which has led to an unparalleled returns to owners and participants in the new south wales at thoroughbred racing industry peter volandes is quoted in this release today he says naturally this is a very sad day for me i put in my heart and soul into racing for 22 years i've been fortunate to work with outstanding loyal and hard-working boards of directors and staff i was just a member of a dedicated team of professionals who were able to generate outstanding outcomes for racing new south wales as a team we went from a struggling jurisdiction to a world-leading jurisdiction i take this opportunity to thank everyone who has been in our team i will miss them greatly and i wish them um the industry and i wish the industry success so when you have a look at his record and the way that he started and when he started his role at racing new south wales like he came from being the boss of harold park and the trots i think he got a job offer there to go to new zealand racing to run new zealand racing and then he took up the the role with racing new south wales he got the race fields legislation which was a massive game changer not for not just for racing new south wales but for australian racing he got new south wales racing through equine influenza during the covid period as well the prize money levels since he's been in charge so in 2004 they were racing for 45 000 in town and today they race for 160 000 in town and the country prize money has gone from 5 000 to 27 000 and one of his greatest legacies of course will be the everest and the way that he reshaped the spring in new south wales so when you have a look what he's been able to do um in racing new south wales it is it is unbelievable his legacy will live on forever um and he'll go on now to be the executive chairman of the nrl i think that'll be announced the next 24 hours as well um so yeah it's going to be interesting to see what happens now with racing new south wales i would imagine graham hinton would be a short price favorite to take over that role he'll be the interim ceo i would imagine that will be announced shortly um i guess they'll have to open up to everyone but i'm thinking he'd be a very short price favorite if they put the market out there for the man to take over from peter volantis um i think his other major strength and what made him so successful peter volantis was his ability to get the best possible deals done with the new south wales government which allowed him to pour the prize money like um the the record prize money for the new south wales government back into new south wales racing um and he was able to get some great deals done with the with the new south wales government over his tenure of the 22 years there as a ceo so yeah i think we all knew it was coming and it's been official today that peter volantis his contract ends on the 30th november so um he's on long service leave as he runs the nrl at the moment but mr volantis role with racing Speaker 3very good he's had a couple good thousand meter gallops and um i think we're looking forward to a nice race different tempo for him different 1400 meter tempo but zach will work at it i'm sure uh you know there's a couple that probably bang forward i'm assuming war woven from day one's going to hold some sort of position with rachel king on you know it's it's um different race isn't it to the races he's been in a couple of people say oh you know he needs high pressure race but who knows 1400 and uh i think zach the beauty of zach was a lot of top jockeys uh they ride their race first the they ride the horse first in the race

Speaker 3the sunday after that race i thought he's a bit jari and then monday tuesday wednesday i still wasn't 100 happy on him wednesday so you got to restructure him don't you yeah so we've had a um you know reshape him into this 1400 he was four weeks between runs into the slipper so and he's not a he's not a horse that carries any like fatty sort of uh feel on him he's clean winded and he's uh he's a big horse he's 10 kilos above his slipper weight but he's i think that's just normal growth you know so i think he's fit certainly the data on his recovery from those says we're on the right track with him so uh i think uh it's

Speaker 3so you know what if someone said to me can you win the court of guineas with that horse and you train him for it i i think you'd be ideal for it i think those home affairs horses when you When you eventually get the right ones, he's going to be like any good stallion. They're going to get more of an extreme choice. He gets Oaks winners, he gets Melbourne Cup winner, and he gets fast horses. So I think he's just going to be like that if you haven't got the right horse. But I don't think 1,400 metres will be a problem for him. I think if he has a relaxed way in running on Saturday, that'll give him the best chance.
Speaker 2Is this an audition for him for the Coolmore slot in the Everest? I don't know if you had a chat to Tom Magney a bit. They have a few horses in the Golden Rose, Central Europe, and of course, the clear second favourite they've got an interest in was St. Gothard as well. Is it an audition? I haven't had a
Speaker 3direct chat to Tom. I actually spoke to him the other day about something else. But I would think he's got a big circle around this horse because if you do a sort of, what benefit does the race offer for that colt, it's a boom race, the Everest. So if you've got a three-hour colt that wins the Everest, it's genuine group one. It's the biggest 1,200 metre race in the world now, basically. And wow, you wouldn't have to be a genius at marketing to market that one, would you? So I think three weeks is beautiful, dropping back, freshen up. I think it's a good recipe, and that is the way I'd be going.
Speaker 2Yeah. And you'd take on Cahing Rising. He's arrived safe at the sound at Canterbury, but you've got to be in it to win it, I guess.
Speaker 3Look, it's a Cahing race. It's Cahing year, and I'm under, no, I wouldn't say to anyone, you know, guess I'll just go there and finish in front of him. You know, Cahing's the one. That's fine. But it's a horse race, and you never know. It might rain. Yeah, it could rain. Well, you never know. It's Sydney, and it is Randwick, and, you know, we got four meals at Rose Hill the other day. They got 50.

Speaker 3So it's coastal rain there sometimes, and you just never know.
Speaker 2The gods might be on our side. It's a big weekend. We've got feature racing everywhere you look. So that's Guesthouse in Sydney. At Moonee Valley, you've got Charmstone and a Manicato Steaks with the rail out, the 13 metres, and she's drawn Barry 11. Your thoughts there?
Speaker 3Dickie Gate. And I don't know if you go on my buddy, Blake Shing, who said, well, Gigi's mistruth is the go. I'm off Charmstone, on to Gigi's. There's one thing, but, look, I know my horse. I know that mare. Yeah. And she is pretty peaky and in brilliant form, and she'll take a forward position. It'll be up to D-Lane or when she won't be getting back. But I think a bit of pace on, like, you know, Rothfire, Baywatt, Napoleonic, Pericles maybe, you know. Bit of bang in the race. But anyway, she's
Speaker 2in good order, and I think she'll run super. The Fian's a fascinating race. You've got Pride of Jenny's first up as a $2 favourite, Mr. Brightside, who's third up, around $4.60, and then Sabato's second up at $6, and Treasure of the Moment's looking to bounce back, and she's at $5.50. It's an intriguing race this year, the Fian Stakes.
Speaker 3Well, you either, if you say Pride of Jenny wins, which you're entitled to, well, then you just say, how do I ride my horse to run well, which is what we'll be doing. And it seems a Pride of Jenny race, doesn't it? But, look, I want to run him in the Cox Plate, because the Cox Plate's at Flemington this year, and he did run a pretty gallant second behind Bia Sestina. So we're heading that way, might and power, into the Cox Plate at Flemington. That'll be him. I'm not saying he could go and win, but I think the training of him, he's going beautifully in his training. And, you know, I just think that the tempo of those smaller field wait-for-age races is nice for him. And you never know. Anyway, that's our ambitious project.
Speaker 2Sun Bliss, your autumn sun filly, stepping up to the 1,200 metres. She gets a lovely gate there on Saturday.
Speaker 3Well, you can do your sums on her. Should have been a last start winner, in my opinion, in the 1,000 metres at Sandown. Do your sums there, and there's your form. So if you think she's good enough to beat these fillies, and I think she's good enough to run first three, had a little bit of trouble with her being a bit. Well, cantankerous into the bridle, but she's better now, and I'm pretty happy with her. And I think she'll run well. I think she's a talent that we haven't got to the bottom of yet.
Speaker 2So she's an interesting runner there. In the JRA Cup, see that storm, your import? Well, the punters
Speaker 3who backed him not last start, the start before, did their money on a wet track. So dry track, you'll get the real horse. Wet track, no good. And if that's the case. If that's the case, I think he's a nice little each-way chance there. Drawn a gate to have the run of the race with Craig Williams on. And don't drop off him. He's a nice horse, and I think he's going well, and I think he's a nice each-way chance in that race.
Speaker 2Come together and Bugsy are at big prices over the 1,100 metres. Your thoughts there?
Speaker 3It's a hard race, isn't it? It's this time of year. There's good horses hidden in that race, no doubt. Bugsy won't run. I can't work out how to ride him from barrier 13. He'll run in the Dane Hill. And come together. I know he's coming off a maiden, but I like that horse to be. A very good horse to race, and probably a black-type winner coming. And I thought I'd dodge the Dane Hill and find an easier race, and this is not the case, because there's a nice race with heaps of speed in it, and he's a speed horse also. So I don't know how Zach rides him, but anyway, testing, testing for him.
Speaker 2SpaceRider was very good first up. He goes around over the 1,200 metres, race three there at Mornington Saturday.
Speaker 3Yeah, I don't know where he positions up in that race. I'm going to run him, and Ethan's probably a good rider to ride him off the speed and finish off, and you're at Mornington on the tight track. So there's a few things there that he has to get over. But look, the horse physically is going great, and he's capable. I think if the right things happen in the run, he'll finish off strongly, and he can do his stuff there.
Speaker 2Bird of By, what would you make of his run first up after that long layoff?
Speaker 3He wants a mile. Mile and a half. No, I bet him.
Speaker 2He's scary. It'll go around, and a mile and a half's in. The Anzac Classic over the 2,400 metres. Leon Croy, he's flying at the moment.
Speaker 3He is flying. Suitable race, and he's a very good winning chance. I think Jamie rides him well, and he'll love Jamie on him. He'll have just a little go around in the first half a dozen there. If he gets the right run in the race, he can win.
Speaker 2How did Sir Barge and Planet Red come through last week's race? Run there and the Sir Rupert Clarke?
Speaker 3Planet Red, horrible. Don't know what's wrong with him. Off to Syntigraphy. Worst run ever. Did you find anything? I haven't done it yet. We haven't done it yet, but horrible, that horse. And Sir Barge will show up in the mile. He'll show up in the Touareg. Nice race for him. Don't drop off him. But he's probably, I think he's best suited between a mile and 2,000, that horse. And I think the five diamonds up here for five-year-olds with however many millions, that will be the go for him.
Speaker 2All right, then. But yeah, he'll show up in the Touareg. Night racing's back at Cranbourne Friday night. You're like any of your runners there. You've got a big team engaged. Gold Chariot looks tough to beat.
Speaker 3Cash out. Yeah, I agree. I agree. We'll cash out the system emergency, isn't he? Yeah, we won't get a run. Something like that. Yeah, no, Gold Chariot's my chance there. The others are learning.
Speaker 2And if the right things happen there, he can win that for sure. Or Bain, do we have something on that Gallop or at Mowi today?
Speaker 3Can do. There's a lot more speed on it. I put Linda Meach on the other day. He did and he did and she did. And now Olivia rides to come back off. I haven't done the stretching yet, but I'm assuming there's a pace on in front of that horse. But yeah, he's there about. He's there about.
Speaker 2We're probably not going to light up the sky with him, but he's there about. No. And have you got many two-year-olds Merv wants to know? Like this is the time of the year where we see a few of them jump out or trial up there in Sydney? I'm down on numbers this year.
Speaker 3I've usually got about 80. I've got 65. So I've been abandoned. But we've got some nice horses and I'm never in a big rush. I see those two-year-old trials at Randwick the other day and I thought, must be a million-dollar prize money here. I'm missing something.
Speaker 2It was weird, wasn't it? I can't understand why they're off the bridle at this time of the year.

Speaker 3It was good. And Saturday week, benchmark race. She pulled up super-duper. I was going to go four weeks into the angst. But Sunday morning, she was kicking her heels up. I said, righto, you're not having a holiday. You're racing. It's Saturday week.
Speaker 2Beautiful. That's all I needed to know. I can tell the boss. I won't get a bonus or anything like that. You don't need a bonus.

Speaker 2Welcome back to Giddy Up. This is Giddy Up Stable Mail. The Manicato Stakes this Sunday on the 27th of September at Caulfield. Group 1 Speed comes to the Heath, and tickets are just $25 at Ticket Tech. Clayton Douglas joins us now because he's got Giggy Kick going around in the Manicato on Sunday. Hello to you, Clayton. Good morning, Gareth. It was a funny old race that, Moy. Was it just a complete forgive run for your boy?
Speaker 4Well, yeah, it was a funny old race. They ran good time from the front, so it was probably really mathematically important. It was impossible to sort of get into the race, and just with how sort of even to steady tempo they went early, it was going to make it hard. So, look, he still ran good time. He seemed to have pulled up well. He's improved from the run, so stepping up to 1,200 is a big advantage to him. He's obviously much better suited out in trip, and from that good alley Sunday, I'm expecting him to run very well.
Speaker 2It was so important, I reckon, with the rail out where it is. And a lack of speed in this year's Manicato, well, it looks like it's a lack of speed on paper. He needed to draw a good gain. He's been able to do that.
Speaker 4Yeah, that's spot on. It probably was going to be difficult if we drew Tenner out, and with that good alley, it gives us that option to at least hold some sort of spot and be able to sort of dictate where we need to be. So, yeah, like you say, it sort of looks to map pretty well for us. And, yeah, look. Looking forward to seeing how he goes second up.
Speaker 2Is there a key to him, however, that, like, you want to use that gate? But I think some of his best races are when he just gets left alone that first part of the race, and then he can finish off and get a cut into the race. But do you think that he can settle in the first half from that gate regardless? Well, yeah, correct. It's all dependent on how quickly they go.
Speaker 4Yeah. You know, you're right. He is definitely better left alone sort of that first half of the race. And that's sort of when we see him at his best. And probably if it's not a mad tempo race, he probably does just naturally from the low draw maybe a spot closer. But, yeah, look, like I say, you know, we know what we get with him, and he's got his established racing pattern. And, you know, we won't be out to be changing that too much. It'll just determine how he begins and where he lands in the running. But it looks like where he's drawn. And with the dangers around him, it looks that he should get a pretty good run.
Speaker 2You sound pretty confident.
Speaker 4Yeah, I am. You know, he's going well. Yeah. You know, I think he's in great order. I can't fault the horse. His work's been good. He's taken the benefit from his first up run. You know, out to 1,200 metres, he's unbeaten at Caulfield. I love him. You've talked me into it, Clayton. It's all I needed to hear. I love him too. So, yeah, I've always got confidence when I take Giga to the races. That's for sure.
Speaker 2Leopard Shark, like she was really good first up. What do you make of Leopard Shark's chances in the Jim Maloney?
Speaker 4Oh, it's a bit of a hopeful prep at the moment. It's sort of, she threw wide the other day, went back. She found it hard to get into the race behind Pretty Baby. Find it hard to see us turning the tables on that horse. It looks like it's probably a rising star. We probably need to draw a nice barrier to sort of be able to hold a reasonable enough spot. Looks like from that awkward draw, we may have to sort of come back to get in, which might make it difficult for her. But we'll be happy if she can run a place there on Sunday. It'll be a good effort for us.
Speaker 2Perilous fighter. Can he cause an upset in the fourth race over the 1,000 metres? Horse number three there at Mornington Saturday.
Speaker 4He seems like he's going really well. Mornington form. He's good. He's had the one run here. He run fourth in a Hariba Stakes. Looks like there's a heap of speed in that race and he's drawn well. So he's going to get the right run. He tends to take a run or two before he gets to his top. He's getting a bit older now. But I think at a big price, I think he's a reasonable each way chance.
Speaker 2Foxenberg's knocking on the door Friday night, surely?
Speaker 4Yeah, he's going well. He ran into a really fast one first up and he was good at Sandown the other day. So third up. He's probably ready to go. I do think it is a very competitive race on Friday night. It's come up quite strong. So he's going to have to be at his best. But he's a really good chance. Expecting him to be hard to beat.
Speaker 2All right, Dan. Any winners outside of those horses that were mentioned? You've got runners at Mowi today.
Speaker 4I've got a horse in the 1,100 metre maiden having its first run for me. It's sort of solid up pretty well. It was a big price before the scratching. But… King Cumber. Yes, King Cumber. Yep. Her trials have been okay. I thought she'd be a reasonable each way chance. She was, yeah, massive price earlier in the week. But with the scratching, she's come right in. But I think she can run very well today.
Speaker 2If I gave you $100, Clayton, what would you do with it this weekend?

Speaker 2We're going straight out. He's a big price giggy kick. I think he's being disrespected at the market for a funny old Mowi when no one really passed the horse that day. So we'll have $100. $100 on giggy kick.

Speaker 5He's good. I know he probably led a few punters down at Flemington. But I honestly believe he was just a bit uncomfortable on the straight course and probably a combination of the good three track and the straight track. And he just only got beat 1.6. But he just didn't quite look like he was going to ever at any stage go on and win the race. But I think his Caulfield record, he's undefeated there. And he's drawn a gate on Sunday 5, which gives us a couple of options. He should get a nice run. And I'm hoping that back around the bend we'll probably see ourself on a good surface again. There's no rain in sight. But I think he'll definitely be more comfortable back at Caulfield.
Speaker 2Well, there is a bit of rain on Saturday. Depending on who you ask, they could get 15 to 20 mils. Now, obviously, that can change a lot. But it's going to be a cold day, they tell me. I'm going to the footy. That's good. You've got to bring your scarf.
Speaker 5Yeah, cooler weather. And if we do get a shower of rain, that would certainly be perfect.
Speaker 2Yeah, I know maps are hard to, like, it's a group one 1,200 metre race there at Caulfield with the rail at 13 metres. So who knows what will happen with the map and what the jockeys will be thinking regarding how to ride their horses in Sunday's race. But on paper, Tom, it looks like it's a lovely map for Harry because you've got Baywack and A Live Another Day that look the genuine speed in the race.
Speaker 5Yes, I think. That if he jumps cleanly, which he tends to, he should just get a nice up on pace sort of run. And if something wants to press forward and try and come across and sit outside the favourite, you know, then we'd slot in fourth one off. And if not, we'll just slide up outside the favourite, I would think. But try and keep it all pretty simple. And look, it's eight individual group one horses or group. Group one winners in the race. So it's certainly going to be a test for our horse. He's reasonably inexperienced in comparison to the opposition. But, yeah, I'm hoping third up and he's nice and fit and sound. So I'm confident that he'll run to his best.
Speaker 2Yeah. Exciting times for everybody involved. I guess at the start of his preparation this time around, this was his, like, first big test at group one level.
Speaker 5Yes, and I mean, now that we didn't perform as well at Flemington, it probably closes a few doors for Cup week. But at the moment, we're just taking it one run at a time. And I'm sure that he'll front up on Sunday, I should say. I'm used to the races being on a Saturday. Yeah, I know. And run very well.
Speaker 2If he does perform well, and the market suggests that he will there, Tom, I know listening to Harry, and that was great insights for all of the racing fans out there to get Harry's thoughts after Live Another Day went around there at Flemington. But he did say that he would give him another go down the straight at Flemington. Is that still a possibility? Or would you maybe think now that we'll wait maybe to the autumn to give him another chance down the straight?
Speaker 5Look, I think that horses are always better. For having the run down there. And that race, the way that it turned out, the winners sort of came more to the inside and lose some. Wynne Moores won six races down the straight. So he was up against experienced straight horses. And the horses that sort of sat more towards the centre of the track didn't really come into the race where he was. But, yeah, I mean, it would just depend on the scenario. You know, I wouldn't shy away from the straight. I would love to see him on a soft track down the straight. And I described it a little bit like driving a manual car and going from third to fifth and missing a gear. That's what it looked like to me. Whereas around a bend, he really gets through his gear as well. And he's got a great turn of foot. And he couldn't really show that turn of foot down the straight. So. So hopefully Sunday we're
Speaker 2back in business. Makes sense. It makes sense now to us, Tom. We appreciate that analogy. Now, if I gave you $100, of course, what would you do with it this weekend?
Speaker 5I'd have to stay loyal to our horse. And I'm hoping for owner breeder, Andrew Harrison. He's been, we've had this Manicato in our sights for probably six months now. So we, hopefully everything falls. Into place, but I'm sure it shapes to be a really good race. So I think the race clubs will be thrilled with the lineup of sprinters

And I reckon you could, you could probably talk. about your build-up to that moya stakes that describes horse racing in a way you weren't going to start um was the rain coming or not oh we might be starting you wake up saturday morning they have more rain than expected uh we'll probably scratch if it's a um if it's a downgrade to a heavy eight and then all of a sudden the weather changes and we don't see rain and then the rain comes five or so minutes after the racing of the moya and it was dry enough for your man to win a first group one yeah it was uh it was honestly meant to be yes uh
Speaker 6you know i actually spoke to my apprentice the other day uh about racing and she said oh you know things just aren't going right i said you do realize you're in a game that's designed for people with thick skins or lacking of mind because we actually prepare ourselves at two o'clock most mornings to get ready to lose because even the best get beaten about 80 of the time so uh you know it's uh it's not a game not for the faint-hearted but uh yeah that's why when we uh when we do have a bit of luck you got to make sure you celebrate them my grandfather was a wise old man who did uh train several group one winners in ireland and uh he did tell me that uh i was ever lucky enough to win a group one and i remember the day i did it i don't deserve to win another one so , uh i thought i ran with his theory and uh we've been able to win more than one

Speaker 6uh look you know i understand what people say that yeah she doesn't run 1200 but uh she did run second in the fastest coolmore ever ran uh and i think that's the key as long as these she does run the 1200 a bit as long as there is speed uh for her uh saturday with the rail being where it is and where we've drawn might be a little bit of a trick for both her and jamie to get her the cover she requires to settle properly uh but yeah it's up to them now uh boss herself is in as good an order as i've ever had her so uh yeah we're going there in really good order just um hopefully uh the race sort of maps we were hoping to draw sort of you know three four five six something like that where she could just fall on there you know fall out of the gate and take a prominent type of step what she did in the moya um from barrier nine jamie's gonna have to uh sort of ride her a bit more so up to him and her now yeah

Speaker 6with the track the way it is and especially if it plays a bit later in the race and if it plays a bit later in the race and if it plays a bit later in the race and you know it's not going to give you what an easy time and be right probably has to not be a sit sprint he has to run it truly yeah because that would suit him better uh what a couple of the other horses that have drawn water going to do if it is a bit later if with the rail out like that are you going to go right back off a slow you know off a uh a tempo that makes it very hard you know to kind of you know to get a little bit of speed into it i think it's going to be a good race i think it's going to be a good race i think it's going to be a good race i think it's going to be a good race hard to catch a horse like beaver what do you change your arm and go forward so it'll be interesting to see it may end up a messy race it might end up a really you know truly run 1200 and give everyone their chance so that's what we're hoping for yeah uh but that will be up to the jockeys when the when the machine's open how's

Speaker 7well he raced um probably his best race in australia's last start yeah it's sort of he's just been a work in progress i think um albeit in his work at home and his trials he shows a turn of speed but in all his races you know as he did in europe he was he's just a down stayer so i think this week will give him an opportunity to race as he did in europe and and make it a true staying test and uh and see if that's not the answer to stimulating some

Speaker 7him if you saw him work of a morning you're lucky we're not punters because he'd be broke because every time he put him out on the track he works efficiently good enough to win you know a good staying race here so but he's yet to oh we're yet to run him so he's got to run him so he's got to run him and give him a chance to do that

Speaker 7still part of him and it always adds to a bit of fun when we're sending out the messages because especially when the cricket's on so but no he's um he's a great man you got

Speaker 7well it's a tricky one to be honest yeah um one horse is going to be sort of bowling along up on the speed and and has made dramatic improvement from his first up win and one horse will probably take a sit and look to come late so um i think both horses were extremely happy with it it's just unfortunate they have to mate because um stars got balloted out of the race last saturday you know so um they're just great chances and um you know i couldn't split the pair of them we're just so happy
Speaker 2with both cross tasman boy was a big run first up in a red hot golden cup and that form has um been a great form race the the golden cup and he was mighty first up wasn't he well
Speaker 7he you know he was a strong form race and he started favorite and ran well so um but you know michael's also good oars and um and so you know he um he's but both horses we have in that race um you know got bright futures and and um and particularly mr chaplin's drawn well you know so he's gonna get a box seat which at rose hills a big advantage you know so um we're happy with both um no illusions as to the strength of the race but um wouldn't be surprised to be the horse saluted

Speaker 7raced very well and consistently um you know this season and last he ran well in the bdc sprint uh he ran well first up and where they blew the clock apart and you know obviously the horse around third come out one a group one on saturday last week so uh it's a decent enough race so um he's got a great racing pattern for caulfield um he looks to map well and uh he'll get every chance because he's going he couldn't be going any better you know it's just it's a case as you'd expect because um i suppose everyone's trying to duck and weave away from carling rising and there's a couple of progressive horses that are stallion prospects that like napoleonic that would like a good one on their cv one
Speaker 2of what muns will think if there's a photo finish um between giga kick and napoleonic there's no doubt being the man that he is that he would prefer napoleonic to nail giga kick because he's a stallion but i wouldn't

Speaker 8yeah it's a lethal combination so i don't know where i fit into the scheme but um she's going really well of course she she set up a track record speed last time at the 1100 at rose hill and was beaten by arguably the best cult in the country um i say arguably hopefully yes it will change on saturday but uh uh she's going really well her work on tuesday was good she's fantastic and um i think it does set up to be a fairly good race for her she said she's going really well she's going really well nice time between runs yeah and she's a very quick fully so we'll try and utilize that speed
Speaker 2nash in front straight to the front and be hard to catch i would imagine would that be the plan
Speaker 8i hope so and that sounds about right hang on the front increasingly
Speaker 2yes hang on nash um war woven now he was very good the other day he gets an inside gate which should be a big tick can he beat guest house there on saturday yeah
Speaker 8well no doubt he's a superstar horse and you can't really worry too much about the others at the end of the day i'm really happy with him his first up run he had to go back last time he had to sit outside lead uh i think up to the 1400 really suits his work on tuesday was the best we've seen and he looks absolutely amazing no doubt we'll probably need a little bit of luck and running but if he gets it from gate one it is the most economical way home uh and it's not just guest house you've got the wallop four or five obviously thank god out there uh tron bolts are really nice uh amongst others so it's never an easy race to win but i do think he's very well set up it's been a smooth preparation he looks great he's obviously a cult um so there's a lot riding on it and i'm really confident the 1400 will suit him so uh definitely a lot counts for a lot of different horses in this race on saturday yes

Speaker 8sensational well i'll tell you what pretty much it goes like this when they agree with my horses and what i'm doing i think they're good judges and when they don't i don't but if i listen to them i'd probably still be working for my old man in new zealand so at the end of the day you got to make your own decision and you've got to work with the team you've got and rachel king's riding better than anyone at the moment um and she is uh look from gate one he's got natural speed so we're going to be able to you know the option to lead there or right behind the speed and um i'd back you to make the right decision and that was quite funny seeing a few of the uh twitter sphere blow up they got pretty thick pretty thin skin they have haven't they they wouldn't say a lot of they wouldn't have a crack at you and me they wouldn't dare social media
Speaker 2no now poor old rachel because you're such a big personality um she's probably a little underrated i reckon rachel king because all of the the cameras go straight to you and she probably doesn't get the accolades that she deserves but you're right she is flying at the moment isn't
Speaker 8she she is flying and she's a big race jockey too and i go back to obviously the success we've had with arapaho she rode him really well um and big races the sydney cup ride really does stand out her ride on green spaces in the derby in the autumn was outstanding that was 10 out of 10 and of course the big one in melbourne the coolmore stud stakes uh which was a very important race for osmosis uh she was able to just take the the race up lead and um was dominant so i think in the big time she's very good um she doesn't get carried away she doesn't get too too worried about the situation so now she's riding really well good winner yesterday grafton street um you celebrated like you won a group one there

Speaker 8he's never run at 1200 and i think he is going really well he's a superstar horse he's definitely one of our favorites and i was very lucky to get him um to train so of course he's good at caulfield he won the futurity there over 1400 um 1200 a little bit of a question mark i must say i was really hoping we would draw better but sometimes you can overthink gates as well so i think from gate 10 he'll probably be able to blend in uh probably just behind midfield and he has got a good turn of foot so it's going to be interesting it's really a really really tough race as you expect for two million and a time-honored uh race so it will be good to be down there and i haven't been to caulfield for a long time so looking forward to getting back there and i hear it's a pretty big day down there yeah

And I thought, what great exposure for going forward to go to 2000, uh, because it opens up a whole sort of lot of options come the autumn, not the spring as we've taken the Cox plate off the table. And, you know, you've got Australia cups and BMWs or whatever, and, uh, the point Elizabeth and those type of races. So, uh, yeah, and, and the experience horses take from that first run over that trip is. Uh, very important also.
Speaker 2I believe. I think one of, when you look through black caviar's career and her legacy that, that week, when you went C4, 1400 back to the light, the lightning over a thousand, you just shook your head in disbelief what she was able to do within a week. Um, which is a, which is more difficult to do what she did or to do what she's alibi will try and do 2000 back to 1500 within three weeks going to a different state.
Speaker 9Oh, listen, I think that's a much easier proposition. Yeah. Um, and, uh, the record of horses at top level mile and a quarter back to a mile, which it basically is, uh, is very, very good. And we've set time. And again, uh, we've seen a lot of three-year-olds do it, guineas and those horses back to a Doncaster. We've seen a lot of the older horses do it, uh, from the Rand back, back to the Doncaster over a period of time. I think that three week break is, uh, perfect. And, uh, you know, she, she's a little bit more seasoned. Now I wouldn't have done it last preparation as a three-year-old, but now she's more seasoned. Uh, I've got confidence in her ability to, to overcome it. And, uh, and, uh, you know, there was never a thought of running Cox plate seven days back to the golden Eagle. Uh, it had to be one or the other, but the three weeks I think is ideal. I could have gone Turnbull four weeks, um, back to the 1500, but I just reckon it really probably suits better. I don't have to train her. She can train herself. She can maintain herself and takes the science out of it and less risk of myself or Catherine stuffing it up really.
Speaker 2Well, it's exciting. Um, great for the Caulfield cup carnival to head to, um, Caulfield Guinea's day and watch her in a, in a, uh, mountain power stake. So that is bloody sensational mood. Initially you looked at 13 and think, oh, terrible, terrible, terrible. But then you think, oh, well, uh, if he was in one or two, he probably has to heal up 30 and he's got 800 meters just to cruise and he's going very good. That cult. The east. Well, he's always, he's never, ever thought of as he, uh, he was 80 to one in a new market after running third in an Oakley plate. He's a damn good cold. He's a high class sprinter. Um, and I think, uh, we'll have a closer look at it. But I think, uh, I think he's there to run big.

Uh, so we won't waste it on. Saturday unless, uh, something untoward happens.

I thought he was very good in Sydney late the other day, uh, out to a mile and a quarter, 14 days back up off Rose Hill. I don't usually do, but he just thrived in his work on Tuesday. Speaker 10He can. Yeah, we get blinkers back on. Yeah. He will, they go on for the first time. We've all seen him trial in them. He had a little gallop, uh, during the week and he looks better. And, um, yeah, we would be scratching our heads if he didn't run back to form or, or was, very close to, um, to the finish.
Speaker 2Has he been frustrating? We had Ozzie Kerr on, on Giddy Up yesterday for Beyond the Barriers. And like, um, he's, he's had a campaign where he's been promising and promising, but it just hasn't gone his way after those really good trials.
Speaker 10Yeah, it's frustrating. Cause you know, he's, he's obviously got the ability. Like he splits last week, um, with the next episode, which is next level. Um, yeah, he's trialed very well for a couple of preps now. And then. You know, he hasn't quite put it together, um, on the track, but then. You look at his races and you break them down. He has had a few things against him, but, um, you know, there are so many, there are so many excuses you can make. So hopefully, um, you know, he does what we think he can. We've got full confidence in him. And main thing is he's, uh, he's of full health. So that's, that's the main thing.
Speaker 2And it was a funny old Moyers. Clayton Douglas pointed out like no one really passed a wall. So, um, be interested. Interesting to see what happens there on Saturday in the Manicato with those horses coming out of the Moyer.
Speaker 10Correct. Then I've, I've, we finished upsides angel on the day. Um, we will get, we were in a bit of a bumping jewel and nothing just made ground. So, um, we're, we're a lot more confident. I mean, we were happy with him traveling down, but naturally you love them to have. More time in the state after a truck trip, he's had more work. He's 14 back to 1200. He looks better. And, um, Browning. He has been very pleased. So there's a lot more going for him.
Speaker 2Um, the one, the mayor pride of Jenny, she goes around in the thing. She loves this race and it looks a lovely race for her again.
Speaker 10It does. Yeah. Ground's going to be fast, which she, she will really enjoy. There's a few in the race that probably don't want it as quick as what she would like it. And, um, yeah, we're, we're very pleased with her. I got interviewed during the week and she's just in a really good spot. Um, physically she looks amazing and, and she's beginning. Very well in her trials and work and recovery has been spot on. So, um, can't wait for Sunday to be very deserved of her. If she can win another fee and, and, and great for Tony and deck.
Speaker 2Yeah. So, um, is it just a, like, obviously she's getting older. Um, but there, there looks to be no sign of her slowing down.
Speaker 10Not at all. No, I think she's, she's, she's just seasoning. I mean, we're in uncharted territory to a degree. Um. In just the manner in which she races, but she's just so strong, mature. And, um, yeah, she, she's a wonder mayor really. But, um, the fact that she can keep, she keeps coming back and she is the way she is. That's, you know, that's the special part about it.
Speaker 2Another wheel was so good there the other day. Your thoughts there.
Speaker 10Much better, which he needed to be. Um, he had a, you know, tough enough run, you know, he was forward working, but that didn't go much pace. And, um, he fought off a couple of. Good wait for age characters like, and really put his hand up. So again, he's been a horse that I'd have a long time out through a few, um, nicks. And, uh, that reset has really helped him. So hopefully he gains a bit of confidence from our stuff.
Speaker 2Yeah. Platinum pearls, an interesting runner earlier on in the day. Um, she's been mighty in her first couple of starts and she gets McDonald.
Speaker 10She does. Yeah. It's very pleased with her. We think she's a Philly that will stay on. So the fourteens well below her. Petri, if I believe, um, which will be in time, but she's certainly quick enough and going well enough, um, to be figuring.
Speaker 2She's in the Scarborough state. She got some nice feelings, but I'm excited to see what over the bridge can do.
Speaker 10Correct. Yeah. She's in a few different places. She's in Friday afternoon as well. But, um, I see that she has come up second favorite in the Scarborough and being well-documented you had, um, Adam and Sam on during the week. And, uh, she is, he is the banner horse. And the only horse running at that front bridle. So, um, yeah, she's the classy Philly. I think she's got plenty of upside and she should figure wherever she goes this weekend.
Speaker 2Can you compare it to the other Phillies? Who would be your pick? You've got Ghana's a con calamari ring and lady Catalina.
Speaker 10Uh, out of the four, I'd probably have, I'd probably have calamari ring on top, um, closely followed by I'd say over the bridge. The only thing I don't like about Ghana's Saturday is the draw. Um, she's clearly got the best exposed form, but, um, it's just drawn a bit awkward. So rail out where it is. She could be at a tricky spot unless she begins very sharply and presses forward.
Speaker 2The JRA cups of beauty over the 2000, um, smoking Romans, rural supremacy, detonated Jack with JL on a board and then land legend. Your thoughts there, who would be your pick?

Speaker 11leave some legacy leave some legacy look i think like peter volandes traded look i think like peter volandes traded look i think like peter volandes traded in power and politics very well gareth in power and politics very well gareth in power and politics very well gareth like that was his great strength his like that was his great strength his ability to influence decisions and move ability to influence decisions and move ability to influence decisions and move things forward i guess things forward i guess things forward i guess part of that meant that he was you know part of that meant that he was you know part of that meant that he was you know a divisive figure amongst australian a divisive figure amongst australian a divisive figure amongst australian racing ranks he racing ranks he racing ranks he you know he famously pitched new south you know he famously pitched new south you know he famously pitched new south wales up against victorian racing and wales up against victorian racing and wales up against victorian racing and backed in his product backed in his product backed in his product um you know he made the old line about um you know he made the old line about you know if they're if they're mcdonald's and i'm kfc i'm next door to them like i'm competing with them it's you know so it created a a very competitive environment some may say a less than cooperative environment on occasions and yeah perhaps yeah that that's led to some of the national well not peter no just the way things have evolved over that time has led to a less than ideal national landscape but you know peter valendi's remit was for the betterment of new south wales racing and you can't argue the fact no in the old farming analogy he's let's let the place in a better better spot than when he when he turned up 22 years ago and look i would have to say this sort of discussion discussion with a few people this morning around this certainly in my time there's been no bigger racing administrator i'd argue that he would sit up there and the top sporting administrators in terms of profile and influence across that time if that's how you measure those things um yeah there are i guess you know there have been concerns raised the last few years about the nature of the power that racing new south wales has and and and the way that's been operated during peter's time um he's operated within the remit that he was given by the um you know by by the thoroughbred racing act and that act is now under review so you know it may be the case that there will never be an opportunity for another peter valendi's to come within you know the racing spectacle the way that sort of legislation is moving towards and the you know the more i guess restrictions put around this role but he was given a lot of um opportunities to do what he wanted to do and reshape things the way he wanted to reshape things and you know he built credits through his you know through his performance during the ai crisis uh through his performance through establishing the race field stuff which really changed the the funding nature of racing fundamentally and he led the line on that with terms of the high court challenge and what that went on with that um yeah across the way so you know i i think that he enabled himself or gave himself the platform and you know the racing the new south wales racing industry gave him the platform to do the things he needs to do where that sits now and and whether that's now the way that things are designed moving forward whether a a race in new south wales with a ceo with that power um is something that racing wants to have moving forward that's up to the new south wales government but it's certainly been an extraordinary
Speaker 2time in racing yeah and um it'll be interesting to to watch unfold the next chapter in new south wales racing will allow maybe other states to come closer to new south wales um what will be the approach um going forward and and obviously um when you listen to people who have um power not just in racing in in but especially outside of the racing bubble like to see what volandes has been able to do in a quick amount of time in the nrl like to become an executive chair and it didn't take long for the clubs to vote him in to give him a tick of approval to have all that power in one of the biggest sports in this country alongside the afl of course um it'll be interesting to see how it goes now from a racing perspective with no peter volandes what what does that world look like and you as you pointed out the the the the the his major strength for mine was his ability to work with governments to get the best possible outcome for the industry it'll be interesting to see how that goes now in new south wales
Speaker 11yeah i i think that like moving forward i mean clearly there has been uh an opportunity given there for graham hinton who's been his long time offside i think spent 12 years of the chief operating officer role for graham hinton to you know have done this role on a temporary basis for four months to sort of give him a platform i guess to you know be the leading candidate moving forward and if you're a you know if you're a betting man you'd have hinton you know in the top of the market yeah yeah you're having the top of the market for this type of stuff like I think it is interesting to see what that looks like going forward. that report will will obviously determine what whether the scope of racing new south wales's powers and um whether that changes or not i think that you know in my time in racing expecting massive changes often changes fall short of what people think they will be so i guess from that perspective maybe the the changes and that's just my personal view is that maybe those changes won't be as um i guess comprehensive as as some may anticipate yeah i would think that obviously racing new south wales will go through a process now um and determine you know who is the best cgo to lead them forward the board will need to be able to appoint that ceo the ceo will obviously need to fit certain uh parameters um you know obviously there's processes going on in queensland at the moment with racing queensland and their ceo there's a process about to be undertaken in wa with uh rawa's ceo over there so you think that the process would follow similar lines particularly given the profile of role you know this has become you know the beginning of the process and i think that's going to be a big part of the process and i think that's going to be a big part of the process and i think that's going to be a big part of the process and i think that's going to be a big part of the process and i think that's the biggest role in australian racing regardless of the fact where which um uh you know which of the uh you know victoria new south wales has that you know the bigger industry racing new south wales has far more power than racing victoria because of the nature of the way things are set up over there and there is only one metropolitan club which as we know racing new south wales is currently running under administration yeah so they currently not only run you know the racing itself and the pra as we call them they are also through administration obviously through the administrator through morgan kelly uh effectively in charge of uh the atc as well so it's an enormous power that role has enormous responsibility um yeah it'll be fascinating to see the process that happens through that the other question gareth which has been asked of me a few times this morning is what's to stop peter valendi's being appointed to the race in new south wales board now this is a really interesting one because as far as i can see there's nothing in the thoroughbred new south wales thoroughbred racing act and i may be i
Speaker 2how much time has he got like he's going to be the executive chair of one of the the second or the biggest sporting organization in this country
Speaker 11well he's been able to um i mean he's been able to do both jobs the other way for a while but um i guess the point being is it would be interesting to see because i think there's an expectation with the racing industry so basically what happens is in december i think there's two roles in the race new south wales uh board come up for renewal now we'll see what happens i'm not 100 locked in at the moment but i think there's a lot of work to be done but this will happen but yeah given his influence and his respect and esteem he's held within uh levels of new south wales government and also by racing new south wales and those within the decision-making realm of new south wales racing that if peter valendi's would end up on the russian new south wales board sooner or later now i don't know what what does that look like i'm not too sure how does that work in he might come out and rule that out today and said i'm definitely not going to do it but given everything that's transposed and given how you know a lot of the details that we're going to be talking about in the next DNA, I guess, of New South Wales or racing New South Wales is built around Volandi's brand of the way that he's doing things. It wouldn't completely surprise to see that happen. So we'll see. We'll watch that one intently. As we know in racing, you know, you never ever get too surprised by what might happen, Gareth.
Speaker 2No. Interesting times. There's no doubt about that, Brent. And he says he stays on to the 30th of November, but is he still on long service leave? When does he come back from long service leave?
Speaker 1116th of November. So he's got two weeks to clean out his desk and move. But yeah, we're already seeing signs Graham Hinton is, you know, I guess putting his own stamp on that role to, in terms of the way that he does things. I think Graham has obviously been part of the way that Peter Volandi's has done things, but there's only one Peter Volandi's. They don't make Peter Volandi's every day.
Speaker 2And you can talk like we've got a people, there's a few on the text message line and the majority of them are applauding Peter on what he's been able to do. And I think that maybe, his time's come at a good time to take on a new challenge with the NRL. But, regardless of, of like, regardless of what you think of Peter Volandi's, you can't argue about the, what he's been able to do for race in New South Wales. It's there for everybody to see. It's impossible to debate.
Speaker 11Yeah, absolutely. Like, you know, and, and that, that legacy is there. The race has undergone massive changes and he's negotiated them through those changes in that time. I said, there's two things that I said that either don't make Peter Volandi's every day. So you're not going to pull one out. I can't find, I think another racing personality that could fit where Peter is. And Peter came into that role. People knew what he was able to do at harness racing before that. Yeah. He wasn't, it wasn't like he was an unknown quantity at that stage. People knew the way that Peter did things. So you don't make, the second thing is, as I mentioned before, is whether then the, the, the legislation or the thoroughbred racing act in New South Wales becomes a bit more restrictive and creates a degree of greater, I guess, accountability between racing New South Wales and the government. Now, the hazard review is not designed to necessarily change that, but there may be aspects around that. But what will be interesting is I think people who want change and have advocated for reform within New South Wales racing, we'll see this as an opportunity where they can, you know, I guess, push their case forward. We'll see what happens in the next little bit. But it's like, it's been a fascinating 22 years. It's been a fascinating, probably last three or four years for Peter Volandi's in racing. I said, we knew this day was coming, Gareth. I think we, none of us are surprised that this is, this announcement has come, but I think it's now what, you know, that's the question. What, what happens from here? It'll be really interesting to see how this plays out because this is a massive role. This is a huge role in racing and important appointment.
Speaker 2Yeah. Um, he did it his way. There's no doubt about that. Hopefully we see it in Victoria a little bit as well. Like, um, and I don't think we'll ever get to see it where everybody comes together and New South Wales in the last little bit, it seems to be divided with some aspects of the industry, but, um, yeah, it'd be, it is an interesting time. There's no doubt about that, but, um, yeah, he heads to the NRL now. That'll announcement surely is just around the corner and, uh, it will be fascinating to see what happens, especially with it has a review. It's a long review.
Speaker 11Yeah. Well, we're still, we're still waiting. I mean, it's been with the government, it's been with the government since July and the next, the, the, the, the state, the state elections in March. Yeah. Yeah. Do we see it before March? I don't know. Like, let's see how this plays out.

No, because he's been given one of the biggest jobs in, in Australian sport with the NRL. So, um, I think he's moving on because of a new challenge. Um, a few other messages coming through, no matter what you think of him. Volandis was a leader has put New South Wales racing in an amazing position. He's a winner. That's from the boy from the bull. Um, despite your patagiric, Gareth, um, there's a lot of happy people. There's a lot of, uh, New South Wales racing people that are delighted that PVL he's finished. Um, yeah, I, I, you can't argue that there's some people that were disgruntled with Peter Volandis by the time. Um, in the last couple of years, especially, but as I said before, you can't argue with these, with what he's been able to do and the results that he's been able to provide for the people of, um, race in New South Wales in race in New South Wales, Jimmy stay spring form looks superior to any other time of the year. Only one and a half lengths of carrying rising last year's Everest. He's going to be a big chance. I think in the Manicato to bounce back. It was a funny old Memsie. Um, it was sort of two races in a way. Like Bay. Whack was off and gone. And then there was the pack behind by black and, um, and he, and he did hang a little bit Jimmy star and no one really passed each other in that race. So it'd be interesting to say, and it was a bit like the Moyer as well. So, um, obviously different form lines, but it's going to be interesting to say how few of those horses that failed in their first up assignments bounce back under a different circumstance there in Saturday's Manicato. Speaker 2You're a beautiful man. Some big news today regarding Peter Volandi, so there's been plenty happening, obviously. It's such a busy weekend for us racing fans, because it's Friday night, back Friday night racing, and then Mornington, and they group one day at Rose Hill with the Golden Rose, and then we butter up on the Sunday these days for the Manicato.
Speaker 13Yeah, it's changed a bit, obviously, with usually the Friday night meetings at the Valley. But no, look, I love the set-up, can't wait for it. Mornington's got some real promising gallopers. You know, there's Concord Connie returning, so we'll keep an eye on that while we're watching the footy. And then, obviously, the Golden Rose in Sydney, what a great race. And then all roads lead to Caulfield Sunday. And it looks like a spectacular meeting as well, so bring it on.
Speaker 2MCG, Wi-Fi with 100,000 people. It's pretty good, so you can watch the races in between the football. But yeah, we'll see how we go on Saturday. What about, obviously, everyone knows Gator's game plan and how we go about it. Gator's our coach. He's our captain coach, in a way. So we go through some key categories to kick-start our meeting, to help us try and find a few winners over the weekend. And then we leave it up to the selectors, which is you, the audience. 0-4-double-9-7-3-6-7-3-6 on the Garrett's Horse & Hound text line to ask our captain coach any question you want about the horse racing this weekend. You can ask about the football as well. Where do we start with our first category? And it is, of course, the best bet. Who's the first athlete that you're picking in your side this weekend?
Speaker 13Yeah, race nine in Sydney, a horse called Skyhook, who was heavily backed. First up, and he looked in trouble to me on the turn. He wasn't really responding to riding, but then he just got stronger and stronger, didn't he? Yeah. I think off that, you'd think he'd absolutely eat 1500. And there were little queries on him when he went to 1600 last prep, but he was dominant. And, gee, that regular ward form looks good now, out of the Fred Best as well, given that horse is excellent, running the Serupa Clark. So, look, Private Eye's a really good horse, but he comes off a blow par run. I don't think there's any other opposition. So, clear best for the day.
Speaker 2All right. Then what about the long division race, the hardest race for you to work out across the weekend?
Speaker 13Look, I've gone to Mornington and Race 8. It's the last leg of the quaddi. There are some up-and-coming gallopers. Obviously, Buckley's one of them. They've also accepted for Caulfield on Sunday's an emergency there. So, I wonder what they'll do. Obviously, VIP won like a really good horse. So, he's the first up, and he has a massive weight advantage on Buckaloo. There's Victoria Spirit. I think he'll improve sharply drier, you know, if it is drier. The weather's changing every 20 minutes, is the prediction. Perfect tan. I don't know what to do with Mr. Verse, but he's good enough. And Flying Valley was back last time. So, a lot of angles to that race. We'll keep an eye on things as we get closer with the scratchings, but a tough finish for the quaddi, I think. Yeah, which way did you go right now, then? Look, I'm happy with VIP. He's won like a good horse at Tandem. I love the way he put them away. Certainly some substance on the clock, as was Buckaloo. But, look, if they were level weights, I'd probably be Buckaloo. But, yeah, it's a big weight advantage. Yeah. The D-Day horse? D-Day. We're going with Blue Door in Sydney. So, yeah, look, she was good first up. She led. She quickened. Chilly Girl beat her. She beat everything else. She led in the other race, Tandem. Yeah. Yeah. Turns out Guest House ran past her and broke the track record. So, how do you knock her? But there's still a school of thought. She's an inverted comma speedy squib. Yeah. So, much less opposition here. So, look, I'm happy Tobacco should be in the parlay. But, gee, it's time. The highlight race? Pretty obvious. The Golden Rose, I think. A great race. And Guest House probably deserves to be favoured, you know, off that track record when we just ran. Reference and Stable think he's the next far lap. And he's a very good horse. Tipped him in a Blue Diamond. Probably should have won. Of course, second pick in the slipper. Excellent win, overcoming difficulties. 11 to 1,400 second up. He's an easy. Off five weeks between runs. But you back the Stable and he's probably the one to beat. I think Under Focus is the one. He's a massive cry. Yeah. Then you've got St. Gothard will rise. And then Trombolt will improve. Your horse, Central Europe, in the mix, too. Great race. Yeah.
Speaker 2It is. It is. It is going to be a – it's always – it's like only worth $1 million, but it's worth so much more in a way because of the value for these colts if they can win a race like this. The Night Watchman.
Speaker 13All right. We're heading to Sydney there. And race 10, number nine, Bandura. Pretty promising horse. I think he's better than 78 grade. Nice, quiet trial. Nice through the line. Easy maiden win at the start of the last perfect and terrific second up. And then they showed up with those Provincial Championship horses, which are, you know, they're bottom. I mean, stakes horses.
Speaker 2So, happy his way. Yeah. Plenty of questions coming through on the Garrett's Horse and Hound text line. And we'll kick it all off with this Caulfield track that a few people have already asked. Like, how are you approaching Caulfield Sunday Gator with the rail at 13 metres?
Speaker 13Oh, look, I think we have every right to be a little cautious. Yes. You know, but what I look at is recent history over ancient history. And recent history saw the track play well in the last meeting here. You know, it's a bit, it looked a bit up and in early. But, you know, they weren't hacks. Those horses were winning. In the last few races, they were edging off that inside section. So, with a bit of rain about Saturday, anything from 4 mils to 15 will probably dictate a lot of things, I'd imagine. But, yeah, again, I'm hoping for a level playing field and I'm expecting one.
Speaker 2Yeah. Where do we start with your questions? We'll go with the fiend stakes. Gay, are you with Mr. Brightside or pride of Jenny?
Speaker 13Look, I'm happy to tip pride of Jenny. I'm happy to take the stable at their word that she's back. The trials are telling you she's back. You know, she's not getting any younger, but neither are any of us. But her last couple of first up runs have been really good. Once upon a time, she'd be pretty flat first up and then she was dynamite second up. But they're obviously training her a little different. She's matured. So, I think she's clearly the one to beat. I think her main rival, Mr. Brightside, can improve. I certainly think. The other main rival in the other world just needs a bone dry. So, I just wonder how much rain will fall for him. I'm on a risk treasure at the moment and pounding out of that.
Speaker 2It's interesting because we like to use the analogies from a human and equine athlete here when we talk about our game plan. But, like, you would have coached a few players that are getting on in their career and they've had a really good previous season and they come back again. They might be training really well, but it can quickly. You can quickly fall off the cliff in a way. Yeah, your body just can't do what it used to do. But pride of Jenny's remarkable that, like, you just watch her trials and it looks like she hasn't lost any zip in her legs. And, yeah, she's an interesting watch this spring once again.
Speaker 13No, I agree. And you wouldn't have been put off by the trials, would you? The only thing in the back of your mind is, you know, the nine-year-old. But there's been plenty of, you know. You know, good horses competing well at nine years of age. You've just got to take each horse, you know, at face value, on their merit and their own profile, I think.
Speaker 2Yeah. It's going to be interesting because, like, she's first up over 1,600 metres and Brightside will be third up taking her on. They've had some wonderful clashes over their journey together. But I don't think we've had this set up where he's probably got some race fitness on his side taking on pride of Jenny. Jenny, who's dynamite first up, especially when she steps out of these 1,600-metre trips. But that's interesting, I reckon. See if he can set a little closer.
Speaker 13No, I agree. And, obviously, he comes off a forgive run. He was second up off a long break as well. But his wet track stats are outstanding. So, he'd love a bit of rain. She's fine with it. But I think it's advantage him if we get really wet.
Speaker 2Yeah. The Manicato is the other feature race on the Sunday. And this is from Joel. He says, Moody makes a really good point. Why doesn't anyone take in consideration Baywack's 1,200-metre form? It's nowhere near as good as his 1,400-metre form. Surely, he's vulnerable come Sunday. Your thoughts there, Gator?
Speaker 13Yeah, look, I think he's a false favourite. I certainly think he can win the race, though. In saying that, he's third pick for me. I agree. I think he's a 1,400-metre horse. That's where all his A-pluses are. You know? When he's been at these 1,200-metre races, they sort of swallow him up a bit. You know, I'm referencing the Coolmore and races like that. I go back to his second Jolie Star, though, in the Canterbury Stakes, when he was second up last prep. That was 1,300. You know, if he runs to that, he's certainly strongly in the game.
Speaker 2Yeah. What's Gator think of Dark Bonnie? That's from Jackson Bell.
Speaker 13Look, I don't know. No. So, I think I've tried to. I've chickened out a little bit here. So I couldn't really tip him on top who over-raced so fiercely last time. But what I've said in my comments for the Oz Racing family is, if he does relax early, he's the one to beat. But how would you know? How do you trust him to execute the first half of his race correctly based on what we saw last start? That's the challenge for him.
Speaker 2Hey, Jay Unick, can you ask Gator Dog what he thinks about all of the slow races at the moment? That shorts last week was an embarrassment. Million-dollar race and they walked. Ronnie Duffsey called it out on Sky. Why are good jockeys sometimes so uncompetitive? And Corford and Rose Hill on rock-hard tracks make it even worse. As usual, punters are the ones who suffer. That's from Mitch from Bathurst.
Speaker 13Yeah, look, that race was not really a race, was it? Yes, obviously, Jolie Starr covered a bit of ground. She was sort of put into the race to some extent. But Ninja and Headball, Headball's a get-back horse anyway. Ninja, I think they got that wrong. And it was, I agree, it was a bit of a joke of a race for a group. You know, I think a few of them had their eyes on other prizes. And we have to be mindful of that as punters, I think, and factor that in because it's a common thing. And we've been speaking about it here for 12 months or so.
Speaker 2And we talk about it every year and the punters blow up. And sometimes we can get frustrated. But at the end of the day, we've just got to learn from history in a way these days. Like, you've got to. Profile each and every horse. Work out what they're thinking as connections and then try. And that's part of the puzzle. Like, Ninja's already in the Everest. They don't want to give him a gut buster. Even though if they went forward, it wouldn't have given him a gut buster with the tempo. But that's what they were thinking. We'll go back. And it didn't worry them if he won or not there on Saturday.
Speaker 13Yeah, and I think that's wrong. You know, I think you need to go there. Yes. Everyone should be going there to win the race. I think that's a point that.
Speaker 2I think they were going to win the race if it all played out for them. But they weren't going there to. It was sort of like if you're a football coach, you're not putting your best player in the midfield. You're hoping that if it gets down forward and he kicks you four or five goals and you win, well, so be it. That's how I would.
Speaker 13Yeah. Yeah. Look, it's interesting. And again, that's a reasonable analogy. So I remember coaching. Once we had a round 18 game, we were sewn up top two spot. We were going to play the elimination final either way. We played a few out of position. We still went there, you know, with an appetite for the contest, sure. But didn't show our full hand. And then we were able to turn it around a week later. So I think that's a pertinent metaphor or analogy.

Like he's taking on sprinters here, where in, say, the MEMS, he's taking on middle distance horses, most of them anyway, getting out to a trip.
Speaker 13And, yeah, look, I think we've summed him up. I think simply he can clearly win the race, there's no doubt. But coming back to 1,200, beaten many an athlete before. Yeah. And he has a profile where he's got three elite Group 1 wins. They're all at 1,400.

Interestingly, he, go back to his last prep and he was right on the heels of Stars in the Rise again behind Tazema. But King of the Sea was in that race, who was a one-time Metrop favourite.
Speaker 2This is an interesting question. Bargest, Bargest, the South Australian galloper that's unbeaten. Caulfield race one, number six, $9. Visually, this horse is very good. What do you think, Gator?
Speaker 13Yeah, two starts, two easy wins. Aggregate margin, 5.4. Beat a horse called Azilis, latest. 4.2 lengths was the margin. That horse was 3.2. Six lengths off. Pretty baby prior to that. So, good case at the price, but it's a good race.

So you expect pride of Jenny to go again, which is interesting. That's from Don. Hey, Gator, what do you think? Thoughts on Rose Hill Race 7 Modella? Huge win first up, and I think this prep will be the making of this horse.
Speaker 13Yeah, I like her as a horse. She struck a pretty strong race, the gold pendant, but it was a really nice ride and win last time at Wyong. She's been on the heels of these before, so she's competitive without probably being favourite, yeah.
Speaker 2Hi, Gareth and Gator. What's your thoughts on Charmstone this weekend? Loved the show. Good on you, Mitch. It's interesting that Blake Shins jumped off.
Speaker 13Yeah, look, I think she's a really good mare. She strikes a strong Manicato. She won this race, of course, last year around the valley. Won it well. Big barricade. I think Lady Shenandoah was in that race. And then rock solid in the William Reed first up last time. She sort of loomed to win there, but didn't quite finish it off. That was the jigsaw sort of woman who was flying at the time. So can make a case. Place hope for mine.
Speaker 2Hi, Gareth. Can you please ask? David, how he keeps his cool after a sick beat like on display a few weeks ago. It must be hard because if they cut back to me after that, they would be needed the bleep out dump button and probably be a broken desk and the form torn to shreds. He must be like Gandhi. Speaker 13Yeah, it's a good one, isn't it? So what I try and do is just a couple of things. Just remind myself that it's not about me. So, you know, my job is to, you know, explain to punters what's happened and, you know, do it analytically without the without, you know, bringing my own sort of punting into it. So I try and do that doesn't always work, but I try and do that. So in that particular instance, I did reference, you know, she's run enormous on display given she's three wide from gate four. But I also said it doesn't decry from the wind of Pondalawa who produced an outstanding finale.
Speaker 2Yeah, yeah, it's just, as they say, that's racing Concord. Connie first up to win easily on the unsuitable track. That's an easy kill. Then another harder run at Caulfield three weeks later into the Empire Rose. Is it her or Jenny that you want to be on for the Empire Rose there, Gator? Well, one, there are other
Speaker 13opposite ends of the spectrum, aren't they? You know, they're like Scott Pendlebury playing, still playing really well. It's a kid who has 25, 28 touches and who do you want in, you know, in the next season? So I don't know the answer to that. I think in our preview show, I tipped Concord Connie to win that tab Empire Rose. So I think she can measure right up without being a good thing, right?

Speaker 13Yeah, I don't think it would have mattered how they rode him last time. He just didn't stretch out on that track. It was pretty firm. Obviously, his first up run was really good. He was brave, beat all of Cosmic Crusader. So, you know, that's group one form.
Speaker 2Does Gator give Ectra Galactic a chance in the Manicato?
Speaker 13Yes. Nellie had her on top. I think if she drew wider, I'm going to back her and I'll live another day and see if I can make some money.
Speaker 2G'day, Gareth. Would you or Gator have any idea what race Charbel will run in the Epsom or the Turnbull? Either, Chris. He goes to the King Charles at his next start and then they might go to the Cox Plate, but they'll definitely be at Flemington for Champions Day. So, there you go, Chris. So, Char Wolf, you're up to the King Charles next. Hey, Gator. I'm with Scintillation in race four, the Scarborough, and see what I see in race seven at Caulfield on Sunday. How do you rate them? We'll start off with Scintillation. Johnny O'Shea gave her a good enough push this morning.
Speaker 13Yeah, look, she was good, I thought, at Flemington, and they kept on too. It was a fast race. They were in much faster time than Paradoxium on the day. She didn't quicken, did she, when that smart Quinoa sort of left her for dead. Then she picked up that last hundred, was really nice. So, everything about her. Everything about that says, yes, 1,200, and there's no Saturno Glow in this race. But, look, there are some smart ones there also.
Speaker 2How is Beeman $23? Beating less than two lengths by Tempton, it would be $1.40 in this race. We'll get back, but looks in each way special at the odds.
Speaker 13It was a good finale last time. He's generally a length or two off a couple of these 8x8 athletes, but he's in the mix. I think, see what I see, just going back half a step. I think drier, the better for her.
Speaker 2Yeah. Beeman runs well. I think he might get a slot representing Newgate, of course, in the Everest. Morning, guys. How does Gator think Spirit of Wealth will go on Saturday race tour at Mornington? This horse has had huge reps on her in Sydney, and now with Kira Maher.
Speaker 13Yeah, I didn't know what to do with this race. It could have easily been a long division. I mean, it would have been $5 the field. So, I'm oscillating between Spirit of Wealth on top or Plunger. Plunger draws wide, but pretty good horse, I think. Yeah. The Spirit of Wealth was a really good return for the new stable. Just missed Educated for second. So, I've gone for over 14, but can win.
Speaker 2Coles says, can you ask Gator's thoughts on Platinum Pearl and the Jim Maloney stakes? Obviously, up in class, but interesting placement by an astute stable.
Speaker 13Yeah, look, she's obviously still a maiden, but she won't retire one. That's a solid debut to St. Lee Dancer, who was second last week. Group two to our best ruffy, Ice Lady. They just missed it. Seymour, the winner there had stakes grade form as well. So, look, she strikes a pretty hot race. I think with Pretty Baby and Cherry Bombshell, doesn't she? But certainly one for the exotics.
Speaker 2Okay. Hi, guys. I think the spring has shown that Moonee Valley is the second track in Melbourne. Don't think Caulfield has been a good punting track this year. That's from Drew. Well, the figures don't suggest that, Drew. Turnover up once again at Caulfield on the weekend Gator.
Speaker 13Yeah, look, I love playing there. I do get frustrated sometimes when we have a gone pre-day. But, you know, I love playing at Caulfield. And the Valley, you know, now that the new Valley is exciting.
Speaker 2Yeah. Who was your tip in the Scarborough at that Caulfield on Sunday for the Phillies?
Speaker 13I'm going to go with Cheyenne, who had excuses first up. And, yeah, I think she's on top. But I'm scared of over the bridge. And there's a horse called Omaru in that. He's 34 bucks. She can run well.
Speaker 2What's your thoughts on Muktalef in the fourth race in Sydney?
Speaker 13Yeah, he's an interesting one. Obviously, he did some early work last time. The winner did beat him comfortably, though. Yeah. He does have a two-kilo swing or one-kilo relative weight swing on said winner.
Speaker 2So, you can make a case there. What does Gator make of War Machine, the last at Caulfield?
Speaker 13It's difficult to come in right at the minute. I know there were some excuses last time. And he was sound first up. Unsuitable trip. But, yeah, D-Day looms there.
Speaker 2Yeah. Hi, Jeanne Gator. Your thoughts on Gangster Granny? She goes around on Saturday. She was pretty good there the other day.
Speaker 13Yeah, she was much better, wasn't she? She was first time of all the key runners through the Chiraco. And she's only been at 1,400 metres once before. That was in the invitation last season. Yeah. And she was three wide, no covering. And still beat all the. Well, she was close up to Steffi Magnetica. So, yeah, no, she's in the game.

Speaker 2Hey, guys. Are we still keen on well-written The Epsom next Saturday? That's Tommy from Noosa. I think I stuffed you up, didn't we, Gator? Because we thought that Lord and Boy wasn't going to The Epsom when we were doing our futures show. Because unlike Chris Waller to change his mind with his forces, but he did say that we'll stay in Melbourne. And then they decided to go to The Epsom. Maybe because they probably worked out or they found out that he was only going to the Epsom. He's going to get, what, 55 and a half on his back.
Speaker 13Why wouldn't you go to The Epsom? It's the perfect race for him. Yeah. We actually said that in our preview show a month ago. The perfect race. It's a great race for four-year-olds as a rule. So, he's top seed for me right now. Well-written second pick. I think she can win. I like her a lot. So, they're both four-year-olds and that's the profile I like.
Speaker 2At Caulfield Sunday, did you give any chance to Gin Twist? Yeah. A few of my mates are in that horse. How are they? They ask me every second hour, how's Gin Twist? What have the Hayes boys said about this horse? What's Gator think? What's Hunter think?
Speaker 13Unbelievable, really. Yeah, I think it's unbelievable if he can ask me what I think. Look, she had it in the fast captain on teams, but not badly. Yeah. It was a fast race as a reference. It was mostly a run-ons race. She'll be fitter. She has beaten Bugsy, huh, who's here and in the market. So, you've got to work a little bit, but you can make a case. Trey Magnum feet win at Mornington Gator. I certainly hope so. Yes. You know, it turns out. That's good form, the behaviour form, given she was on the heels. He was on the heels of some pretty good ones again last week. So, look, I'd love a drier track. I don't know if we're going to get it now, but I just think she's a length or two better drier.
Speaker 2Let's see. Morning, Garth and Gator. Thoughts on Decorum for mine? Way too short compared to Cross Tasman. That's from Wigger.
Speaker 13Yeah, I really like Decorum, but I do think Cross Tasman's a danger. I'd be surprised if anything else won it.
Speaker 2Yeah. I can't believe, Gareth, you haven't mentioned Central. What's Gator think?
Speaker 13Yeah, look, you can make a case. He's in the mix. He covered grounds last time and kept closing. Everything about that tells me he's ready for 1400 now. So, they look to be winning the battle with him, settling earlier too.
Speaker 2Yeah. Do you think sometimes, do we read too much into this Gator? I'm thinking that 1400 metres, they've had trouble holding him over shorter trips. So, with you there. With the booking of Tim Clarke, is that telling us that there might be intent? So, Timmy, just do what you do best. Put him on speed and just let him run if he wants to run.
Speaker 13Yeah, it's very possible. I guess the battle you're waging with that is, are you teaching that athlete?
Speaker 2Bad habits. Yeah.
Speaker 13So, you know, but some, you just would have seen plenty run along at a high speed. You know, that a good high-octane endurance athlete can sustain speed. So, maybe that's him. There's certainly a way to find out. But there's also quite a potential cost if you get it wrong.
Speaker 2Yeah. What about Stormy Marco at $31? One of our listeners wants to know.
Speaker 13Any chance? Probably not this race, but I think it's a good race in him.
Speaker 2Yeah. All right, then. Another Will, could he be the blowout on Sunday in the FIEN?
Speaker 13I think he can win if it's bone dry. You know, I just think that's what he's become, a dry tracker.
Speaker 2Yeah. As simple as that. One for Gator, not weekend related, but interested on any sorts on the next episode. And in the Coolmore, gave Natural Fling a touch-up in Queensland.
Speaker 13Yeah, no, he certainly did. First two trials, I wouldn't have your money on him. But the latest trial, there were really positive signs.
Speaker 2Yeah. So, he trained a lot better, didn't he? he trained on tuesday night and he come back on thursday night and he was far better Autumn mystery, crazy odds in a JRA Cup. Your thoughts there?
Speaker 13Yeah, look, not out of it at all. JRA Cup, I've got him six.
Speaker 2Which is race, yeah, three.
Speaker 13Sixth top-rated runner. Yeah, I can make a case. I thought he made grand last time against the top. Was it 11 lengths below average tempo? So he's ticking over nicely, I think.
Speaker 2All right, then we'll run through a few of these other questions. Diamond Gator should have won there the other day against McDonald. I love these holes from an inside gate. Can you share my confidence? That's from Tony.
Speaker 13Yeah, really hard to beat. He ran well fresh with his 61. He wasn't in the right part of the track, and then we all saw that last time, didn't we? No luck. He looked at a bit to give to my eye, but his two mile runs as a two-year-old were both very good.
Speaker 2Liam wants to know, what do I do with Sassapil Gator?
Speaker 13Yeah, I'm not sure. I'm not sure, especially with the rain about now. Yeah. So I think I'd like to, I'd have her on top if it was bone dry. I thought she was good last time in a high-pressure race, but rain hurt.
Speaker 2All right, then, sorry. Who was that horse who you tipped at $41 again? It was in the Scarborough, wasn't it? Aymara. Aymara, yeah. Speaking of Tiaka, what do you make of Gigi's mistruth?
Speaker 13Yeah, well, I mean, she's a group, one mare, was in a handicap, but it's another challenge here, but one of many, like Charmstone, you can make a case for, at least for exotic.
Speaker 2Yeah. You're tipping Guesthouse, aren't you? I've tipped Under Focus, actually, at the price. Oh, okay. Guesthouse is in your numbers. Yeah, so I think he can run well. Yeah. What do you make of Guesthouse, then? Because Mick Price, I reckon Mick Price gave him a good enough push this morning.
Speaker 13Yeah, look, I think he's the best horse. You know, I don't think you can do what he did first up or overcome what he did overcome in the flipper and win and run that sort of time if you're not much good. And he's a big, strong horse, keeps improving every time we see him, right? Yeah. I guess the query is 11 to 1,400 second up in five weeks between runs, given he did pull up a little bit. He certainly, let's say he felt the run first up from what the bio reports.

Speaker 13Let's head to Rose Hill. And it's a parlay three, so they all have to win. And, look, I think they can, hence, you know, I tipped them. Race five, number six, Decorum. Race six, number one, Blue Door. Into race nine, number two, Skyhook.

Speaker 13Yeah, look, I think Brisbane's best is the best. Friot's been more consistently higher across. So, if you drew two graphs, the Brisbane peak's higher, but the Friot's one's more consistent. The bottom few in Friot bother me, concern me. I'm happy to tip Friot, but more because I want to cheer for them.
Speaker 2Okay, then. I thought you would always tell me, Gareth, when you're trying to analyse any type of,
Speaker 13just pick the fastest horse. I know what you're going to say. Yeah. It's a good way to look at it. Yeah, look, I'm just hoping. I think it'd be a fabulous contest. But if Friot can just overcome what was obvious to me in the prelim, that their bottom four or five aren't quite up to it. If they can overcome that with a five-man bench, they can win. But that's the challenge.
Speaker 2Would Lockie Neal surely get off at a peel? Your thoughts there?
Speaker 13Look, I think he should play. You know, I think if you're using that precedent, of a really clean record, we use it in every other aspect of society. So I think it's valid. But that's just my two cents, mate.

Speaker 14Yeah, at number five, we've got Aroused from Cranbourne on Tuesday. Sorry, Monday. Unraced, grey and big-trained filly. Might not have been beating much at the jump ads, but she's been doing a good style without overly exerting herself. Gained plenty of experience since January and has progressed well along the way. Quietly handled with winning narrowly at Packham on the quicksand two weeks ago and backed it up with a superior performance on Monday. Was happy to take a lead, sit wide enough at mid-track to out before extending strongly to score decisively on the line. She looks ready. We're going to go now on this daughter of a Group 3 winning sprinter, Myla, who scored on debut and might easily follow in her dam's footsteps.
Speaker 2Okay. You found one for us that'll be racing this weekend, Jadzia for grey and big, who trialled nicely on Tuesday.
Speaker 14Yeah, lovely race filly, Jadzia. Showed plenty of promise before an excellent debut at group level. A shade disappointed next time out, but put away after that. And then bought in for a farcical victory on the, or whether it, I don't know, I don't know. I don't know where she's going to be. I'm not sure. She was very good at Cranbourne on Monday. Jumped well from a wide draw and was happy to sit on the speed about nine off the fence before cantering clear under a stronghold. She's run a nice time easily and can go on with the job this spring. She's definitely an outside chance at the odds on Sunday.
Speaker 2You found King Tut at the trials as well, or the jump outs at Cranbourne on Tuesday?
Speaker 14Yeah, like the race five-year-old King Tut has always been prominent in his jump outs, but it performed stylishly with great enthusiasm this time around. He held up out wide and came home strongly to score with plenty in hand on the all weather two weeks ago. And he followed that up with another encouraging performance on Monday when well away before kicking through, closest to the inside and scoring well on the line, holding out 94 rated King Zeppa. Has a faultless record first up and King Tut looks to add to that this
Speaker 2spring. Aurora Bell at Flemington on Friday?
Speaker 14Yeah, the undefeated Kiwi mare has caught a few eyes so far and has created a good impression since joining the Hayes team and continued along that path on Friday. Showed plenty of speed when leading throughout two weeks prior. We're narrowly defeated under, very strong hold. I mean, the other horse was flattered by victory. Um, the winner subsequently scored on race day and was only in front, you know, went very hard ridden on the line compared to Aurora Bell, who's under a triple hold. Uh, she could have won that if she wanted to. Um, took a seat on Friday behind a very speedy and promising mare before running her down late, went again strong through the line. Aurora Bell's definitely ready to go now and looks set to add to her undefeated tally of this campaign.
Speaker 2And what about Cabellus? You found Cabellus? Cabellus there at Rose Hill on Tuesday for the Baker camp.
Speaker 14Yeah, I don't think any horse has been trolling better than Cabellus of late. Uh, two weeks ago, he was all over stablemate overpass who was hard ridden to hold him out on the line. Uh, when winning narrowly, uh, Cabellus could have breezed by easily if he asked to do so. Um, on Tuesday at Rose Hill, he went straight to the front, did all his own donkey work, canter long in front at leisure. Uh, and before being asked to open the pipes over the last 200 where he cleared out by a wide margin. And he's definitely ready to go now. Yeah. He's a pretty good horse first up, but he's a machine second up. So watch out for Cabellus soon.
Speaker 2Matty, we had, uh, we had the two year old trials there at, um, ran week earlier on in the week. We had some two year old jump outs at Flemington today. Um, natural fling in the next episode, jumped out at Flemington heat one today as well. I haven't had a close look at that, that heat just yet, but I'm looking forward to watching those jump outs at Flemington this morning.
Speaker 14Yeah. Um, I've, I've, I've seen them and had a good look at them already, uh, in the first one, uh, natural fling. She did what she does. There were two or three others, but cash, uh, starting off the cash, um, uh, the good, uh, the goo, but what's he called? Uh, Mbouba. Mbouba. That's it. Yeah. Mbouba. And, um, you know, the, uh, cured my horse, they were on the trials. They were, they were held up well off the pace. Um, so you really can't read too much into them. Um, on paper, uh, you know, on the sort of look and even second look, the second horse pocket full of cash performed pretty well for a, a one-start winner on the sand. Yeah. Um, risk would, wouldn't have to be pretty happy with him, uh, in the two year old trial, uh, one was pushed out to win very clearly, but I, uh, I think I mentioned to you last week, the Hayes Philly. Um, she overrides slightly this morning. Okay. Uh, I think she's a winner. Yeah. I certainly wouldn't be riding her off cause she was very strong to the line. She was held up in behind the winner. Um, she overrides, He pulled her back right to the inside of the worst part of the track. He then just let her stride a little bit, but, you know, she obviously wasn't there to go flat out. But through the line, she was enormously strong and she galloped on very well after the line. So I'd still be watching out for Bell Delita.
Speaker 2All right, then. Who are we backing from your black book?
Speaker 14Look, I'm a little bit reluctant to go too far ahead at the moment as we know the weather's a little bit dubious over the weekend. I did mention Jed Zaya. I'll have a little play at a multi again. Race one, top two, Tales of Time at Caulfield on Sunday. Race four, number eight, Jed Zaya, top five. And in race five, Pride of Jeannie to win. And that's around 750 or so.

But they did it last year to celebrate, of course, the centenary year of selling yearlings in New Zealand with that NZB Karaka sale there last year. But they're doing it again.
Speaker 15They are. We're delighted to have that commitment from Cambridge Stud. Obviously, Sir Brendan and Lady Jo Lindsay, they love supporting locally and making sure that everyone has every reason to get to New Zealand for the sales. And it's wonderful to have that support. Obviously, they're firing on all cylinders with their stallions already this season. Al Manzoor, Haloum Zane, Sword Estate, they've all come out and had some good results. So that makes it all the sweeter to be able to offer all of their yearlings at Karaka in January.
Speaker 2Yeah, they're having a wonderful time at Cambridge as well. All of their stallions seem to be really firing, especially Sword Estate, who's got that good colt going around for Bjorn Baker on Saturday in the Golden Rose. And looks tough to beat. War Woven from that inside gate. Al Manzoor, Haloum Zane's doing a good job as well. So it's a difficult market, the stallion market. It's very competitive, but they've been able to attract some nice bulls to Cambridge Stud there in recent times.
Speaker 15Yeah, for sure. And I think we also have the likes of Rich Hill Stud. They commit 100% of their yearlings to Karaka as well. And they've got ace high. And Hoisea, Sotono Aladdin as well. So when you look at all of that line-up of stallions where primarily their stock will be at Karaka, it's a nice feeling sitting here in September knowing that there's a lot of good reasons to get down to Karaka in January.
Speaker 2Ace high is a beauty. Blind Rays was very good the other day there at Caulfield. Who knows, could be the Caulfield Guineas winner this time around. And also he might be a chance to compete in a Cox Plate. He was a cheap buy in New Zealand. And the inspections from your team are in full swing for book A of the yearling sale, of course, and of course the NZB sale there in January. So that process is in full motion as we speak.
Speaker 15Yeah, for sure. Absolutely. And obviously we can't turn our attention away from the ready to run sale. So we're two and a half weeks until we've got breeze ups. We've got a super catalogue of two-year-olds there. And they're building up. Now it's not long until they'll be showing what they can do over 200 metres at Tirapa.
Speaker 2Yeah. So the breeze ups are on the 12th and 13th of October. It'll take a couple of days, I would imagine. But then you can watch them live on Racing.com and Sky Racing. And then you can look at the website. And then you get all the information that you need, that you want from these breeze ups. So you can go to the sale on the 18th and 19th of November and find your next Mr. Brightside or Golden Six. Or a superstar like that. A child wolf would be nice.
Speaker 15Yes. Yeah. Look, the results do speak for themselves. You drop those names and you don't have to say a lot more, I think. And you tally up what these horses out of the ready to run sale have done. The last five years, graduates of that sale have won 33 Group 1 races. It's just phenomenal. You combine the results of the similar sales in Australia. They've won two over the same period. So this sale is a beast all of its own. It's in its own classification in a way. And every year we stand back and think, golly, what's it going to do next? It's a delight to host and to promote. And certainly what we're seeing on the pages of the book means there's plenty to look forward to here at Karaka in less than a couple of months' time.
Speaker 2It's becoming such a massive sale for your organization now. It nearly is. It's as big as the January sale.
Speaker 15When it comes to the average price where we're seeing for the horses, it's just behind it, which is phenomenal. We didn't see that coming. It's something that has shaped itself and driven itself. And when we saw the average creeping up over those years, we were like, good Lord. The demand is here and the results are creating this kind of driving this beast. Yeah. We have book one pedigrees and book one prices and the average price, the average prize money earned by horses out of the sale for the last six seasons, out of the last six sales is $160,000. That's how much they've earned, which is, that's a huge return. It feels like quite a safe sale in a way to purchase it. Not only can you get them to the track quickly, so you've got less risk, less time, less waiting, but also these horses are going on to consistently earn very good money. Yeah. Very good prize money. So it's a, it's a no brainer to get down here really.
Speaker 2And what's the, what's the response been from the Australian owners and trainers? Are they heading to New Zealand? If you want to go, how do you go about doing it?
Speaker 15Yeah, that's been great. Bookings are really strong. I will always find somewhere for someone to stay, but they certainly, it is, it is with, I've been talking to the accommodation girlies here today and certainly demand's been high. So we're chuffed. And just contact [email protected] and we can help with flight bookings and accommodation and transfers and everything you need really. Perfect. So yeah, we'll make it as easy as we can. I reckon it's a really good punting meeting. Stack of value. Let's start in the first race. One, number five, heated rivalry. Look, doesn't really know what winning's all about. Track and trip, 15 starts for six seconds and five thirds yet to win. Yet last time out went 29.93, which is quick enough to win this by panels. I think it's a really good each way play. Look, it's career 16 placings, including one win, 23 starts. It just knows sort of where the finishing line is without being the first one past it. So race one, number five. We'll roll over to race three, number one, Imperial Audrey. What do I say? Last week, we led all the way. Almost got the $1.40 pop beat to make it three from three and we got done close to the post. But this time out, $2.10 off the red. I think strikes a really weak race. Race three, number one, Imperial Audrey. Race six, number five, Pearl Z. Big price, just a little nibble each way. Was unlucky last time out. It is a better dog than what it showed last time out. It can show good wheels and it's just overs at the price. Then roll over to the value play of the night. He's around $2.15, which I think is very fair. So race six, number one, Indy Melman. And as we said, yesterday, the stay at Derry has just gone to another level in the last four to six weeks. Ned McDonald's done a terrific job, pardon me, with this dog, race eight, number two. He's just putting himself in better positions. And he's clearly the greyhound that gets to the line the best. So race six, number one, race eight, number two at Sandown Park. There's a big race worth $75,000 at Q2 tonight. It's called the Golden Chase. Last week's run of Back Creek Butch was unbelievable. He's drawn box one. He's a terrifically talented greyhound. It's not an easy field. It's a difficult field, albeit, but I think he'll be hard to beat. He really had to dig in deep last week to win, and I think he can get the job done. Speaker 18I'm hoping so more than expecting um obviously uh Ignite the Furnace was sort of fairly average out from barrier one last time out sometimes you know they can improve dramatically when they've not really been asked before and um you know but he's yeah three weeks between runs um I think if he gets out like he did last start then hopefully we can we can cross him but um you know if something happens he improves a lot with his gate speed or for some reason our bloke doesn't get out as quick then you know it might it might be a bit more difficult but um we've still got a good draw either way do you think he deserves to be this short um well somebody said to me yesterday that he was $1.75 I thought that was probably a little short to be honest um I mean if he it's probably a price that you just guaranteed to find the front um which he's he's I mean it'd be good if he if he was but um either way it's still a group one there's still going to be a fair bit of speed on early I think and there's some good horses on even if we do cross him that horse is going to be on our back um have a good trip yeah so it helps with he's the boss drawn
Speaker 2nine but yeah so he's $1.80 Ignite the Furnace 380 he's drawn the pole um Trent Wheeler drives for Sarah Wall that'd be some story if um Sarah and Trent can combine as well to win a group one then he's the boss um just keeps on winning but he's got a terrible draw would you be confident if you did find the front he's the boss was to your outside that you'd still be too good for he's the boss yeah he's a

Speaker 18he's on his best behavior he let himself down big time in the in the west bread finally um he just over raced terribly which he's he has done that in the past he just panics he's been the best gated horse he's taken a lot of work to sort of get him to to be tractable um he was I can't even really say he was better at pinjarra because you don't see junior laying out the back of the cart that often like he was a pinjarra but he's done a massive job to to still win that race I think it's a good thing that he's drawn on a helmet and he'll be on a helmet straight away and I'd say it'd be a genuine speed which will help him um he to me he's he's not up to to ideal whisper just yet but if you're going to be on a helmet you've got to be on a helmet and you've got to be on a helmet and you've got to be on a helmet and you've got to be on a helmet but if you know if it was run upside down then I wouldn't be surprised if he if he gave him a shake late

Speaker 18guess it just got to the stage where it was um it was so rare for me to have a drive yeah that I um I kind of only really come out when junior jumped off in the big ones and I would drive them and I guess it got to the stage where I thought maybe it wasn't fair on the horse or um where you know it had been so long between drives and then I'd jump on in a big one that maybe I was I was get to the stage where I was such long gaps I was worried I'd get out there and forget what to do
Speaker 2really yeah I think you're um you're you're a very good driver Justin I think that's sad that you're not driving anymore you're better than most even if you didn't drive that much but I I guess you've got to make a decision um that um you can concentrate on your training and your driving because it's not easy to be a trainer
Speaker 18driver is it really no it isn't I I admire the people that like Aidan and Dylan that can do it I mean financially it's probably something you wouldn't want to really give up but um yeah I got to the stage as well where I'd sort of just run the race over my head you know when you're driving you're not driving you're not driving you're not driving you're driving all the time you tend to sort of just you know the form so well you get into the race and worry about it then but I was probably overdoing the form putting too much pressure on myself during the week um probably fire myself by the time the race comes up rather than and I would rather just concentrate on on worrying about training the horse and yeah just hope junior doesn't get off but it's hard to keep
Speaker 2him off yeah and Luke McCarthy I remember he telling me that it's much easier for him to drive outside horses because you just got to clear frame of mind like you haven't worked them during the week you don't know if they've had a foot abscess or they've had a minor setback and you drive them how you think they should be driven in a way sometimes he said like as you pointed out and even though he's he's one of the greats both training and driving it's um sometimes you can know your horse too well if you know what I mean yeah hundred
Speaker 18percent you can yeah if you've had a bit of a hiccup during the week you know like generally you don't tell the driver unless I mean there's certain things that will tell junior if I think he really needs to know but otherwise I just like if I if I really wasn't happy with it it wouldn't be there so um I think the less they know the better otherwise yeah I would be one that would be sort of probably on the cautious side and potentially you know miss making a move when I should because I'm second guessing how the horse
Speaker 2is um good question coming through here why isn't junior driving this horse tonight ideal whisper because he has driven I guess he trains it that's why
Speaker 18yeah he got to the stage where you know he he sort of he's the boss kept getting a draw advantage he he was leaving it open on draws but he kept getting a draw advantage kept jumping off and we just thought well we thought it was a bit unfair on the horse as well just to sort of have you know somebody different driving it you know junior driving in the heat and then we chucked someone back on for the final and then we just decided to stick with Denny and we're hoping she'd stay available and and just stick with her and and um then they can sort of combine to make a good combination so

Speaker 20uh last start second at doom and was good behind stanislaus that of course was a couple of weeks ago uh just looks to have found the right race here i mean it's not a strong one gets the two kilos off for ryan so down to 59 got a good gate gate number two before any scratchings just looks to have landed the right sort of race and gets the right run so i think uh well placed to win race five number four that's rimbo go to the seventh race now this is the magic innies and i like one here and that's number three high profit now go back and have a look at high profit winning at doom but uh back on the 12th of september beat huggy got a split halfway down the straight and really picked up well only had the three starts one on debut here at toowoomba the home track trained by uh troy pascoe uh then ran third at doom been behind ten gun tommy which is a good form line and then that win last start was dominant i love the way he just powered away from them over that last little bit so he gets an extra 90 meters here and then he's got a good run here hopefully that'll be enough it does look to be good speed in the race so hopefully those leaders will stop and he'll go flying past them race uh race seven number three high profit and in the wheatwood i think there's some value here sj we know he's as tough as old boots number four race eight number four he ran eighth in a doom been ten thousand he ran eighth in a morton cup he ran third in an eyeliner uh he ran down the track in the glass house but that was an excusable run and then he wanted to do but now he resumes here he's a good first up horse he loves the track that's his home track ang jones will ride i liked his recent trial and he's good odds uh he's as i say he's as tough as old boots this bloke uh sj feels like he's been around forever but he's only a six-year-old with 28 starts pat webster trains he trains them really well so i'm going to go each way in the wheatwood number four sj he's got a good chance go and get

Speaker 21play uh trainers have been hanging off waiting for this meeting by the look of the acceptances we've got uh big numbers there probably uh we often get into those parks tracks meetings where we get the smaller numbers trainers trying to avoid that track uh but uh yeah the murray bridge meeting is strong fields very open races we've got the track uh with the rail true and i'd definitely be expecting a good rated track we got warm weather when the rail is true gareth they can they can often sort of get off the inside so don't be put off with wider gates and middle gates okay where do we start with your plays then uh i think the best bet on the program comes up in race one our brave boy for philip and tommy stokes this guy's got uh pretty handy form in victoria and the stokes race is going to be a little bit of a challenge for him because he's got a lot of he's a little bit of a challenge for him because he's got a lot of yardage just so good at placing their horses from victoria over to usa and i reckon this guy fits the and i reckon this guy fits the and i reckon this guy fits the bill yes he's drawn wide but he might have a bill yes he's drawn wide but he might have a bill yes he's drawn wide but he might have a little class edge all right then our brave

All you have to do is forgive her just that one run and you'd probably make a case she'd be quite hard to beat here. I guarantee it might be a little bit hit and miss, but if she finds her best form, she'd take a lot of beating.
Speaker 2So that's race eight, number 16, never ordinary there at Murray Bridge. Yep, eight, 16, yep. Yep, beautiful. Anything else for us, mate, or that'll do us?
Speaker 21Well, that's probably around about the mark. A couple of others I think will run well. A horse that I have a share in myself, race four, number 11, Uptown Monk. He'd been sort of well below his best, his first couple this prep. We dropped him back in grade last Wednesday and he was a lot better. And I know that his lead up into this run, well, the gallops we've been able to get him and his training's been better than it was leading into his last run. And I'm very keen that he can be hard to beat in race four, number 11, and probably one that'll go around. It's a bit of a price. Race six, number 13, Dirty Deal's been going quite well for Jake Stephens.
Speaker 2So that's Murray Bridge. Mary Bridge, love to get your thoughts on the Gordon Richards and Damian Moultrain gallopers, especially we know Pretty Baby because she was very good in her first run in Victoria, now is the favourite for the Thousand Guineas. But Bar Jest has bolted in his first couple of starts. He's a son of fierce impact. How good is he?
Speaker 21He's untapped at the moment, Gareth. He's doing a lot wrong as well and he's still winning. He over-raced badly last start but it didn't stop him showing a big change of gear. And for horses that do do things wrong and over-race, I think Jamie Mellom is a great choice of rider for him. Whether he can step up in grade or not, I'm not exactly sure and he's not exactly drawn to advantage either. Really like the horse, he's got a bit of X factor but he wouldn't want to do too much wrong. Note on Pretty Baby, I've been wrapped with how she's going and she keeps finding the line well. A couple of little caveats on her form. Each of her last three or four runs, she's had a lot of things go right every time for her. And the other little caveat I've got, she's by Barbados and they're generally wet trackers and she's going to hit a drier track. But if she ran like she had been, she would take a lot of beating. But I've just got a couple of those points in the back of my mind that probably things couldn't have gone any more right than they have for her recently.
Speaker 2I agree with you there. She's very good. But she nearly. She has to be a risk on Sunday if the rail's out 13 metres. And she settled a lot closer in Melbourne than she had been in South Australia. Yeah. But if she gets out the back on a firm track with the rail at 13 metres around Caulfield, she'd have to be very, very good to do.
Speaker 21Yeah, a couple of times where she got a fair way back at Morfaville, they went pretty hard. I don't think she's a horse that necessarily has to get a long way back. But just the point I'm sort of trying to make is when she got back, they ran the races hard and they set it up for her. And then the Sandown run, she was super impressive and she's run a great rating. I'm not knocking that. But if you wanted to script how the race was run for her, you probably would have done exactly what happened.

Speaker 2Horse of the Year Awards. How were they last Friday night? And there was no surprises there. Gigi's mistruth goes back to the past. She's back as Tassie's Horse of the Year.
Speaker 22Yeah, thoroughly deserved for Gigi's mistruth. She's an absolute ripper. She had a brilliant season, of course. Won that Group 1. So it was no surprise, as you say, to see her go back to back. And the first horse to do two-year-old, three-year-old, and Horse of the Year in succession since Mystic Journey. So she's in rare company down here. It was a terrific night, though. The other Horse of the Year winners, Aristopoulos, two-year-old of the year. Of course, six from six. He was the only horse that could win that. Saniya won the three-year-old of the year. She had a brilliant season. She did basically what Gigi's mistruth did the year before. She won both the Group 3s. She beat the older horses. And I heard you chat with Froggy Newitt earlier in the week, G. He gave Saniya a big pump-up. We're pretty excited to see her come back during the summer. The Hall of Fame was a great part of the night, of course. Froggy upgraded to legend status. Colin McNiff got into the Hall of Fame. A couple of champion racehorses. I know you'll chat to Scotty Brunton soon about that, too. And a jockey from the 30s and 40s, Harold Cootes, got in, too. So, yeah, it was a terrific night. A lot to celebrate down here in Tassie and some excellent horses. There's a few of which are on your side of Bass Strait this weekend, G. Of course, Gigi's mistruth in the Manicato. But our two Cup winners, Asfa, he's down at Mornington and Blonde Star. She's at Caulfield on Sunday as well.
Speaker 2Who's the best horse in training in Tasmania, Rob?
Speaker 22Right now. Jeez, that's an interesting question. I would imagine it would be one of the runners in the Barry Campbell stable. I think I'd have to agree with Froggy, G. I think it's Sanaya. I think she's got a real X factor about her. And I'd be shocked if she's not sort of a Group 2, Group 3 type of mare, perhaps even higher in Victoria. So I'm going to go with Sanaya. I think she's a ripper.
Speaker 2And when do we get to see these? When do we get to see these stars back?
Speaker 22Well, a few of them aren't far away. So Swift Force, who was one of our better three rides, trialled at Longford. Scotty Brunton will probably tell you a bit more about her. But Sanaya, I think she's being saved for early in 2027, early in the carpet charge. But the likes of Geraso and Mazzini, the other stable mates, are in the new markets on the 20th of November. So we're less than two months away now. So we'll start to see them come back to the trials and be probably racing by late October. Early November, which is really exciting.
Speaker 2When do we get to see the star three-year-old?
Speaker 22Yeah, he's first up in the three-year-old cup, which is on new market night as well. So Johnny Blacker might look to get one into him before then too. But he's just come back into work. He had a gallop at Longford on Tuesday, but he's not far away either.
Speaker 2And Friday Night Racing, we're going to Launceston for six straight weeks.
Speaker 22Yeah, pumped for that. The next three of them are on racing.com. So I'll be on the coverage with Colin and if great to have racing.com. Backing us down here in Tassie for the next three Friday nights. Good program there tomorrow night. Gee, we've got nine races. A bit more meat on the bone for punters than there perhaps was last week with just seven races. Best for me is in race two, Red Winter. This is a horse I was with last Wednesday night in Launceston. Just burned a bit of petrol to get to the front early on in that race. I think on the quick back up out to 1,200. If it gets to the front again, I'm not sure they'll be getting past it. And then one in race three. That we can maybe have something on it. A bit better value, Sorrel Eagles. It also ran last week. It went back from the draw. Hit the line okay. It was sort of 11 to 14 with a month between runs. I think it'll strip a bit fitter there. And I think we're shopping about 15 or 16 bucks, which is good value for mine.
Speaker 2All right then. I like it when you've got value snapper. You rarely miss. And the Friday night specialist, you'd be like Wayne Kerry back in the day, unbeatable on a Friday night under lights. Um, what about the greyhounds? There was some good performances there. Um, little Dan smashed the clock over the three 40.
Speaker 22Yeah. We've had a couple of track records in the space of essentially three days in Hobart. There was a two year old record in the harness on Sunday, even though it was blowing a gale. And again, on a pretty windy day in Hobart on Tuesday, the dogs, little Dan for Linda Nichols, 1903, that record breaking time. So they're edging closer. They're getting under 19 seconds for the 340. Yeah. Uh, that dog backs up again tonight. Gee. So, uh, race nine dog, absolutely flying. So it might be one for punters there with a little Dan stepping out in race nine
Speaker 2tonight and the harness racing, obviously with, um, no racing on a Sunday. They've taken that time slot, um, during the day, the trots there in Tassie. Have you seen an increase in turnover with that new time?
Speaker 22Yeah, we have, uh, I think the turnover Sunday afternoon is a little bit up on, on what it is on, on Sunday nights, but I think when you add in the extra positive that I think the majority of participants probably appreciate the Sunday afternoon, uh, verse finishing up at 10 or 11 o'clock on a Sunday night, that the benefits are certainly there. So we had a little mid week here in Hobart, uh, yesterday. Ryan backhouse has had a big week. He's debt back from Victoria. He had a couple of winners in Hobart last Sunday and a couple again here yesterday. So he's flying at the moment. We had up to Launceston on Sunday afternoon for, uh, another nine race car.
Speaker 2Well, looking forward to watching you and. Colin McNiff, the hall of famer there, um, on that racing.com on Friday night. Won't be too far. Won't be too long before you're in the hall of fame, mate. So don't worry.

Speaker 2yeah the inevitable um he was one of my favorites like i remember you telling us the story when was it you that purchased him and the old man says he was too small or was it the other way around
Speaker 23other way around yes dad had the eye for him not me but um yeah he was a bit too small and uh yeah we kept him hidden for a little while but um yeah he was uh certainly dad knew what he was doing he was
Speaker 2easier to hide because we couldn't see him really but um not
Speaker 23much of him he did keep growing for a while and as he got older he kept growing a bit so he wasn't too small in the finish but his early days when he was two or three there wasn't much of him at all
Speaker 2yeah like he hit the ground running like he was one of the favorites for the golden eagle it didn't go right that day but he won the silver eagle um and then he sort of lost his way a little bit but then you're able to get him back and i i still in my time covering the game it's the greatest third in the history of running third in any big race when you run third in that all-star mile scotty boy and it was and and racy victoria um did that documentary with the all-star mile following um the certain participants around um in the lead up to the all-star mile and he was able to get him back and he was able to get the all-star mile and there was no doubt without you in that show um it lost a few lengths that you were the star of the show but it was it was some day that day even though you didn't win
Speaker 23uh it was incredible it was like a win to us you know i think he picked up 380 000 for running third so you know it was just an incredible achievement by the horse and everyone that was involved so um and it was certainly a lot of fun doing filming for that so um the people who did it were fantastic and uh it was just nice to get a yeah to get recognized a little bit it was fantastic so i wouldn't change any
Speaker 2of it yeah and what made him so special
Speaker 23oh look he was just he was look he was just loved by all of us in the at home here he was he was our horse he was very special there was a great bunch of owners in him it was just um you know and you'd tasted the highs and the lows the things went wrong after the golden eagle and then he got um pod's disease and uh had a lot of trouble trying to fix that and uh it was just a long road back and it's just i think persistence pays you know where we were working hard to try to get him right and had this the right uh the right atmosphere at home and the right um the right tools to be able to get him right so it was just um i think uh it was uh very rewarding to get him back to what he was um from when sort of had gone backwards from the golden eagle and to get him back to where we got him to was um a great achievement and to everyone involved and uh we just loved the horse he was just part of the it was part of the family lived in the in virtually in the backyard behind the house and um yeah always eyes were always on him and his eyes were always on
Speaker 2us yeah nah i loved you mate i know you'd be missing him along with hell of a street who he was a great horse for the stable as well and he thoroughly deserved that accolade to be inducted into the hall of fame there as well friday night
Speaker 23oh absolutely yeah butters as we officially named him he was just a just a lovely horse and um had a really really good bunch of owners as well um guys that have been with us for a lot of years and uh he was just he was a great horse to us he always um though he only went over there a couple of times he was uh in victoria but he was just always so competitive when wherever he went and whatever he did he was just great and um i had a really good association with uh dean holland with him which meant a lot um and even more these days yeah it was a great thrill to go to be part of their careers and um it was very fitting like i said for him to be inducted on the same night was a great thrill and um yeah myself and tegan had a lot of great times with the horses
Speaker 2um what about you're going to have is swift force the next star from your stable the johnny key
Speaker 23stable yes yeah from johnny yeah she's um she's very very smart me and john have a really big opinion of her probably her only vice is her racing manners yes um she does she's pretty hard going sort of mayor um but she's she's got a great um early speed and uh she raced really well over there last time um coming off the end of the carnival here um had a couple of really nice runs and just she's just um yeah she's a really nice horse she had a trial yesterday at longford won it won the trial comfortably um me and john sort of have set a goal to have her over there to race about the 14th i think it is at caulfield there's a 78 1100 um midweek of cup week i think a really good kickoff point for her and cartoon graveyard the old fella he'll come across with her as well okay
Speaker 2um the team seems seems to be going great guns mate my mail is scotty and you know sometimes my mail can be debatable but they tell me geez you've got some good young horses coming through the ranks
Speaker 23we've got we've got a couple of we've got a a lot of unraced three-year-olds and i think got about 10 two-year-olds yeah um yeah johnny bought up a few at the sales and um clients have sent us horses so we're we're really keen to see what they've got um to offer um a lot of the older horses have been retired now so we're down to about 40 in work which is good but um a lot of babies coming through so um hope we can find one um yeah we'll just wait and see if i gave you

Speaker 23yeah yeah going really good mate um all the uh all the trouble i faced is in the well in the vision mirror and um looking forward and not looking so that's all well behind me i'm going really good mate really enjoying my role here with johnny um and heather they do a fantastic job running the business and allow us to work the horses um at the beach and do what we do best so it's it's been fantastic um i'm extremely grateful and uh yeah that uh traumatic part of my life's over whether it's self you know self-inflicted um i'm going great that bloody that bloody makes
Speaker 2my day scotty because um you're too good to be out of this game you're a wonderful horseman you're a bloody good character and we need characters in this sport and so um will we ever get to see your name in the race book once again or you enjoy this situation where johnny's got the keys and you just play in the background and you're just playing in the background and you're i quite enjoy that
Speaker 23and um i don't have the financial stress or anything like that john allows me to do my part but um look in the future um it would be great to go into a partnership with john and we've talked about that and uh look um let's see how things work out in the next year or two and hopefully that's
