Giddy Up Full Show (22/10/26)

This episode of Giddy Up with Gareth Hall is a comprehensive Cox Plate Day preview, built around interviews with leading trainers and an international racing expert. Bjorn Baker discusses War Woven's remarkable spring, which has produced Golden Rose and Caulfield Guineas victories, and acknowledges the difficulty of backing up against older weight-for-age stars in a high-pressure race. Adrian Bott reports that Sir Delius is progressing well third-up and should be suited by a firm surface and a kind draw. Joe Pride explains the decision to run Char Wolf in the Cox Plate after last week's race did not unfold to suit, citing the horse's strong staying pedigree and favorable barrier. Trent Busuttin covers War Woven's condition and Blind Bay's wide draw, while Kieran Marr reflects on Point of Law's dominant Geelong Cup victory and his Melbourne Cup prospects, also naming his leading Cox Plate contenders. Kevin Blake provides an insider's view of Joseph O'Brien's sizable international team, the improved veterinary protocols, and several Melbourne Cup candidates. The show closes with support-race selections and betting suggestions, setting up an eagerly anticipated Flemington meeting.

Speaker 1now on giddy up it's time for stable mail and you can send in
Speaker 2your questions as well maybe you got a question for one of the trainers they're about to have a chat to oh four double nine seven three six seven three six on garrett's horse and hound text line and we have a new favorite as well for the melbourne cup with bet 365 the king might have sold kiramara melbourne cup champ point of law wasn't he devastating with an amazing victory in the geelong cup there yesterday it was 26 with bet 365 and now he is the favorite for the great race on that first tuesday november so we'll have a chat to kiramar um just after nine o'clock but let's catch up with the superstar trainer from sydney bjorn baker who'll be training with us in the next couple of weeks and we'll see you next week trying to win his first cox plate with this three-year-old war woven who's been in unbelievable form this spring winning the golden rose and also of course the golf caulfield guineas and he joins us now bjorn thanks very much for your time on this thursday morning
Speaker 3yeah garrett thanks for having me on and uh exciting weekend coming up no doubt so uh looking forward to it spies at cranbourne
Speaker 2said he worked like a star there on tuesday morning
Speaker 3yeah well he's gonna need to uh no doubt about it um it's a tough race and uh it's a big ask he's been up for a while but he he's got speed he's proven himself against his own age group uh and he's pretty tractable he can go forward and back and that's one of the things that ring craft he's got um some have it some don't yeah it is a cox
Speaker 2plate so it is the the great race but this year's going to be it's i think it's going to be a brutal cox plate with land legend and light infantry man um do you think your three-year-old can absorb that pressure and still finish off on saturday
Speaker 3oh he's got a good gate he's not going to do a lot of work and i think the key is just putting him where he's comfortable we look if you talk about speed and pressure i think the golden rose went quicker than probably any of these horses could go so he can definitely go fast the 2040s are another another big jump but um you know he's going in he's he's got a really good base he's well and um if he's going to win the cox plate he's gonna have to beat these old tough season campaigners
Speaker 2and you are a master trainer and you've been able to show that especially since you've arrived in this country and your last five years have been exceptional but to get this horse to peak golden rose day to peak corfield guineas day and then to do it again on cox plate day how difficult is that or is he just a horse that allows you to do that
Speaker 3oh with the horse really at the end of the day they do the talking and um you know i think it's going to be a really good race and i think it's going to be a really good race and i think it's going to be a really good race and i've got pretty understanding owners it's still uh magic millions day wasn't the easiest day so he's definitely bounced back he had a good preparation in the autumn and you know you you think about the the cox plate it's pretty special uh race what's your favorite one in the cox plate gareth do you know
Speaker 2what when i fell in love with this beautiful game bjorn i can still remember it like it was yesterday saintly in 1996 you had all our mob jelang juggler philante um and then saintly trying to win the cox plate and then you know i think it's going to be a really good race and there was four around that bend and um beam and he got saintly home and then he went on to win the melbourne cup so that's probably my favorite moment clearly the horse from heaven what about you
Speaker 3do you know your bone crusher song yeah yes bone crusher bone crusher do you remember that when bone crusher out waverly star took off at the 600 and then the filbert just to make it a kiwi trifecta that was that was uh undoubtedly the highlight of my cox plate viewing yes it gives
Speaker 2me goosebumps when you describe you know that song do you know the song no i don't i don't you should
Speaker 3google it get it up for your listeners it's one of the great songs so now it's all done with ai so you've got to understand back then yeah pretty tough to create a catchy melody like that rachel won't
Speaker 2be taking off for the 800 is this it his
Speaker 4name's bone crusher
Speaker 2oh yes yes oh i love it do you reckon they'll have a song named after war woven after saturday
Speaker 3i'm hoping you should actually play it and it's an entirety just remember three of the first five inducted the australian race and all the fame with kiwis don't forget that no i'll
Speaker 2never forget that and do you know what your social media i keep on saying this this and this is why you were named for it i'm not going to forget that i'm not going to forget the name the personality of the year at new south wales um which wouldn't be hard these days but anyway it was pretty
Speaker 3much just like one of those awards for attendance right yes yes we didn't win anything um actually that's a little bit like my sporting career but back then you didn't get
Speaker 2for attending yeah so um but that that that social media post that you put up before the everest saying that like uh you've got to be in it to win it that gave me goosebumps with the music behind it so um i can't wait for the video for saturday with war woven you'll have to have some bone crusher in it
Speaker 3surely yeah we'll see what happens but no it will mean a lot for everyone so under no illusions um come saturday morning we have a bit of angst for sure so it's a special race it's one of the great races of the world and at flemington i don't think it's going to make a whole heap of difference between flemington and mooney valley i guess the first time around caulfield he handled that pretty well but it's only his first time so second time left hand and maybe the bigger track it's not necessarily a bad thing
Speaker 2well no pressure glenn boss i remember i heard him saying in recent weeks that um this horse is better than so you think or could be better than so you think so that's a massive rap for a horse like war woven of course by the good horse when he sees one
Speaker 3bjorn he does he does indeed and uh there's not many better judges than him i like it when he's on my horse yes i remember he took um a stepping magnetica when she won the the uh strad break so he's a very good judge um
Speaker 2other runners there at flemington point and shoot first go at a thousand meters down the straight your thoughts there
Speaker 3yeah i actually like him i think he gets into this race pretty well in the conditions um he was good over 1100 first up i think the straight line is pretty good i think the straight line is pretty good and i think the weight would suit him one concern maybe a bit of running around and the second concern he has been slow out of the gates at times so over a thousand if he misses it we're in big trouble but um i think he's going really well he looks good he's going to head down tonight and i think he um yeah he gets into the race pretty well on his day he's very good he can be a little bit hard to catch yeah he
Speaker 2just needs to jump i guess as you just pointed out over a thousand meters but if he does jump a thousand won't be too short for him
Speaker 3uh he'll be hitting the line hard hopefully they go quick enough there's plenty of speed in the race
Speaker 2perfumist in the infitation over 1400 meters aaron bullock gets a great opportunity there yeah and
Speaker 3she was outstanding first up i think she had excuses last time wide gate really bad track she looks phenomenal her work on tuesday was very very good and from a really good gate she's going to get in the gate four with the emergencies out, I think Aaron Bullock will be able to do his perfect stalking. ride just right there um maybe one out one back and she's going well uh if the track's good i think she can bounce back
Speaker 2and then robusto goes around over the 1600 meters in that final event
Speaker 3had no luck first start but a tough race and plenty of weight but i think he's a good chance so um he's definitely not out of it i think he uh um he'll probably roll forward and he'll be able to put himself in the first three he's very good at the mile at ramlock that's where he does excel and he looks fantastic so on his day he is very good no doubt um uh the stadio mistala up the top and anthra side of the ones to beat but he's in good order
Speaker 2and then um regimental colors goes to durban that'll be a big day if you can get three winners in three different states
Speaker 3yeah awkward gates i think we'll save her um maybe look next wednesday she's going well though so keep an eye on her
Speaker 2and a few questions coming through who's the horse to beat in your eyes for the cox play
Speaker 3yeah it's a it's a tough one everywhere you look that's pretty good i think sir delius jumps back to um what he did in the queen elizabeth and maybe last spring he's very good um ali hana you have to respect chow wolf uh unfortunately i know chow wolf well um i think he's going to be hard to beat uh blind race you've got karen mars sources he's flying at the moment so everywhere you look um it's not easy um even attrition was a good winner in sydney last time so it's definitely a tough race um and if he wins he's going to deserve it
Speaker 2if i gave you a hundred dollars what would you do with it this weekend
Speaker 3hundred dollars oh i'm not going to say war waving because every time i do that it doesn't work out so i'll put a hundred dollars to win on perfumers race eight number
Speaker 210 there in the invitation at ranwick on saturday bjorn we wish you the very best of luck you go and win that ws cox play
Speaker 3murray would be proud thanks gary now just make sure you play that song in its entirety i know you dabble and chop off a few of these here we go see you see
Speaker 2you mate there's bb look out if he wins the cox plate on saturday it's 12 minutes past eight the bone crushers song we'll play it to a break here on giddy up this is giddy up stable mail coming up next adrian bod who has sir delius along with gay waterhouse will be my special guest of course sir delius is one of the favorites i think his second favorite at the moment with the bet 365 for the ws cox play

Speaker 1on 0 4 9 7 3 6 7 3 6 live across australia this is giddy up with gareth hall
Speaker 2welcome back to giddy up gareth hall with you let's catch up with adrian bod who's got of course sir delius along with gay looking to win her first cox plate um there on saturday with one of the favorites of course he was the favorite for a long time and now he is the second elect with bet 365 i'm just before we catch up with adrian um bjorn baker said yeah favea in the last race is his best there today at gosford but adrian's been good enough to join us good morning adrian hey morning gareth um can you compare sir delius um before that queen elizabeth in the autumn um right now is he in that same form in your eyes yeah look
Speaker 6he's he's certainly building towards that peak performance that we needed from him um at a soft enough run over the mile and i think that just uh told for him second up in what was sort of a good sort of truly run 2000 meters there and on testing track he was chasing there and it just sort of just found him out in that race and it obviously showed where we needed to get to off off the back of that run but uh was pleased he's able to have that tough run that he needed um at that stage going going into the cox plate because obviously high pressure race itself um but we just needed that run to sort of really bring him on which it has is
Speaker 2there any concerns that he is a bull and he's getting older now and he's done a lot throughout his career and he's always been as genuine as they can be and i think that's come but um is there a chance that he might be thinking about it these days or you think it was just fitness there the
Speaker 6other day look that's always a possibility with those um horses at certain stage of of their careers um yeah there was a few little things that he was doing in the start of the prep that um he hadn't sort of done in preparations um previously um just even sort of his um pre-race parades but i think the deeper we've gotten into the preparation that the fitter he's been able to get um and sort of as the workloads increase that sort of really just help sharpen him up and and sort of really help keep him keep him focused um on what he's doing at
Speaker 2present because when you have a look at this he's cox player it's going to be a beautiful setup for him really they're going to go fast it's going to be high pressure um and he's probably going to get um the the conditions that he wants
Speaker 6yeah i think um you know everything on on paper looks to map um as you'd like to see it uh where the speed's drawn where we're drawn relative to it uh yeah we we've got a kind draw got exactly where we want it to be um you know flemington's a track he's been very successful at um you know he's third up now as you said pressure looks to be there so um there looks to be a lot of things um in his favor and you know i think he you know he's got some um he's got a lot of things um in his favor and you know he's got some wet track form i think getting back on a better surface is actually going to be positive for him
Speaker 2as well yeah i think that's a very good point you make and and it sounds like you you think that he is a better horse on top of the ground than when the rain comes i
Speaker 6think that's what we've seen certainly from where his peak performances have come from they haven't necessarily been on on heavy tracks even though his action is good on them and he can handle them and be be effective um yeah i think his pbs can can be on a on a fast run surface it's exciting
Speaker 2and and for gay obviously you've had a great association with gay and um she's won nearly every big race in this country but she does it would be fitting if she could walk away with a cox plate anyway it's hard to believe that she
Speaker 6hasn't won one really yeah it's like obviously that just goes to show how incredibly tough you know this particular race is is to win and why it means so much to so many people um you know it takes a pretty unique um you know it takes the best of us to be winning this this type of race um so yeah it'd be fitting we'd love to do it um hopefully we can pull
Speaker 2it off yeah is this his last preparation or do you think he'll go again in the autumn before maybe he retires to
Speaker 6start look um that's obviously a decision for the ownership group to um sort of sort of weigh up you we've still obviously got the um um autumn um autumn next next year um and then i guess performance is through there would would sort of uh dictate everything um do we get to
Speaker 2see you in melbourne on saturday yeah can't
Speaker 6wait to get down there i'm looking forward to it
Speaker 2yeah um surfing bird was exceptional there second up can she go on with it over the mile at group two level there
Speaker 6at flemington yeah good good test for her um she certainly looks to be well placed in this race if she can read you know repeat that performance or or even improve on it um great to see the um you know fitness she'd taken from that first up run she's a bit soft in in sydney so uh but a nice tough run there brought her on um she's got to step up to this to this grade now but she's very effective at the mile um she enjoys uh you know the racing level way of going she's been very effective and very successful down there and um she seems to keep improving for us and she's got
Speaker 2to take on the boys who have got pretty pretty handy credentials albeit they might not be at their best at the moment but it's still a big test for her you're surprised she's that short in the market she completely dominates um the market there and the group too
Speaker 6well that's it it is going to be a test for her um she does have to step up to you know that that open class wait for age level and um yeah she's not necessarily a big mare herself by by any means um you know she's taken a fair bit of time to let her mature and get to this point uh but that'll give us good indication um you know the next couple of options forward if she's sort of um you know backing up in a um in a in a mire there against the mares or um you know whether we're looking to bring her back up here and get her out over a little bit further there's a couple of options for her coming
Speaker 2up our emperor goes around over the 1200 meters in the brian crowley stakes there in sydney on saturday your thoughts about this colts chances i want
Speaker 6to be really forgiving of him um he's run into really high pressure races and just from the draw he's had he's just ended up in a in a really difficult position being stretched the entire race and never really had a chance to sort of find a rhythm or travel in his um in his run so that's obviously told told late um finally gets a good draw um back in class and ideally a race with less pressure um you know i think that's going to give him his opportunity um yeah it's a nice race for him to try and bounce back in if if he can't on sunday it's back to the drawing
Speaker 2board yep the calendar presnel over the 1600s a is the key to revenge is just getting him
Speaker 6to jump yeah he um he he jumped a bit awkward there the other day from a wide gate he was a month between runs he'd had a setback and missed the run into the dolden rose so he was probably a little bit sort of vulnerable going into that latest run so he didn't need the hard luck that he that he that he received um he's come out of that really well runs brought him on nicely always felt the mile would be a suitable race for him so um naturally stepping up to that sort of trip with the tempo if he can be that little bit more prominent and um sort of dictate turns that's that's that's going to help you
Speaker 2what about thrice a major bill at a price in the last over the 1600 at
Speaker 6ranwick yeah both resuming um may find the mile uh a little bit sharp for them um but a nice race to kick them off in and
Speaker 2i think today gosford for us there adrian
Speaker 6um i think marcus port's been racing quite consistently for us um back in grade off in town there last start so um yeah he he should appreciate the the trip there so that's
Speaker 2race five number four there at gosford and the euphrates and vauban how they pull up after yesterday's
Speaker 6geelong cup yeah uh all pulled up um come through the run fine this morning um you know frady's obviously um disappointing off what we're hoping expecting from him um you know he didn't quite let down as well as he he can when pressure came on um vauban was always gonna um improve off the run just being first up there so i thought his effort was uh certainly encouraging and plenty of positives to take from it to bring
Speaker 2him on yeah what do you do with your
Speaker 6frady's now uh just assess over the next couple of days with no firm decision yet
Speaker 2all right then and just um just the last one surfing bird does she push on to the empire rose can she
Speaker 6yeah potentially yeah she could back up there um we could look at a couple of other options for as well but that's uh firmly in her mind if i gave
Speaker 2you a hundred dollars this weekend adrian what would you do if you got a hundred dollars this weekend what would you do with it interesting um
Speaker 6let's go with sir delius i'd be disappointed
Speaker 2if you didn't good luck brother there's adrian bot race eight number five sir delius he's 100 play in the ws cox plate it's 24 minutes past eight this is giddy up and giddy up stable mail as we get set for cox plate day don't go anywhere we've got plenty more to come joe pride and trent boston to join me next join the conversation
Speaker 1text us on 0 4 double 9 7 3 6 7 3 6 live across australia this is giddy up with gareth hall this is giddy up on
Speaker 2this thursday morning all thanks to bet 3 6 5 and i tell you what everyone was so happy um once we heard that char wolf was backing up into the ws cox plate after his effort there in the wsc plate he was so happy and i tell you what everyone was so happy king charles behind autumn glow um he gets a lovely gate he'll get a high pressure cox plate um and he gets a massive chance and the market suggests he is a big chance he's been probably nearly the best backed throughout the week with bet 3 6 5 and joe pride he's trying to join us here on giddy up joe hello to you morning it was great news once you told everyone there on the sunday that char wolf is is heading to melbourne
Speaker 7town yeah he needed this sort of a certain set of circumstances that were going to allow him to to do that after after king charles run and you know our our weaknesses from last week became our strength for this week because what we wanted last week was a wet track and and pride of jenny in the race and if we had both those things i don't think he'd be here this week but we didn't get those things the race didn't go his way he didn't have a tough run he seems to have pulled up really well so i feel like this is the best melbourne assignment for him as opposed to
Speaker 2champions day okay so he won't do both i
Speaker 7doubt it yeah highly unlikely
Speaker 2yeah um how difficult is it to travel the horse however on the week back up especially i don't know how long he has to stand on that
Speaker 7truck for about 10 about 10 hours no no look it's not it's not difficult for these old horses they they handle it really well yeah um touchwood really have a problem with the horse traveling um particularly the older horse i think it'll be a lot a lot more of a problem if i was traveling a young horse yeah um in terms of the backup i think if the rain comes on the weekend i think uh horse on the backup i think the rain comes i think in cosmic crusader and she will for the
Speaker 2tools to be yeah i agree with you there i think that um i don't know if the rain will come or not we're going to have josh holt that'll join us a little later on it's just a guessing game with this weather joe but um it is predicted to come at some stage on saturday whether that's during the meeting or maybe after the meeting but that is in the lap of the gods as they say um with char wolf we all know that he loves he's probably nearly one of the best horses in the land on a high pressure mile race he's proven that in the king charles victories um will he enjoy a high pressure 2000 meter cox play easy for me to
Speaker 7say yes but i don't know
Speaker 2yeah
Speaker 7yeah he's one run second in the derby yeah it's different he's got a very very much in um his damn side um very strong staying pedigree um if you look at your damn side he should be running around caulfield cups and melbourne cups yeah um but um we haven't tested him out in that way um but it's not to say that he can't do it yeah
Speaker 2and barry number three you're perfect
Speaker 7yeah now we've got to pick that one um one of the one of them is an inside ish draw um just so that we can limit the amount of work we're going to do if he is going to run a really strong 2000 which i think he will he is not going to be ridden really close to the speed so that draw hopefully allows him to be maybe midfield and i think in a race with extremely high pressure it looks like it's going to be i wouldn't want to be in that first group chasing not with my horse anyway no um but that that next pair or two back from there that's where he needs to
Speaker 2be that's like with barry number three it is a big advantage isn't it with a horse like charlotte i think so yeah um so it's exciting mate and obviously it's it's it's a really fascinating cox play now do you read it this year because it's got speed it's got the three-year-olds it's got the stars like sudelius and aliana we're expecting them just to explode for their grand final so how do you
Speaker 7see it yeah look i think it's a great race um and you know punters are never content i've heard i've heard a lot of people say that it's a great race i've heard them howl in the last few weeks when they've had short prize favorites so they can't have a bet and now they've got a an open race and they're howling because the short prize favorites aren't there so i mean you're not going to keep them happy but i think in terms of quality of contest very good horses fighting up against each other a good tempo on at a very fair racetrack yeah it's a great race now i think
Speaker 2it's one of the better cox plates from that perspective when you know that you've got a racer you've got guaranteed speed you've got the x factor for weight for age middle distance horses coming together with different form lines i reckon it's one of the best races we're seeing for quite some time because of that joe so um it's a really good
Speaker 7contest and i think that's the way it'll unfold too you know the three-year-olds are the hard one for for anyone to predict we don't know how strong this group will be until they're into their three year old year and that's when we'll see how many of them have measured up and one at weight for age and and and one you know major handicaps throughout the year but it's too early to be measuring them up against these other horses um i would say it's a really good race and i think it's a really good race and i think it's a really good race and i think it's a really good race and i think it's a they would be more advantaged if kieran ma didn't have his two front runners in the field yeah um and possibly more of an advantage to them if it was at mooney valley um could be wrong on those things that's just my feeling on it at this stage yeah it's
Speaker 2interesting most of the trainers that i've talked to agree with you i know kieran ma was adamant when i asked him about those three year olds he goes i don't think they can win gareth because of the the tempo that we'll set with our two horses so um and then others say that they might be suited by that so that's the intrigue to this you're going to be running through a pain barrier they've never had
Speaker 7yeah and that's the thing some of these old horses have been tested at this at this level quite a few times and i just can't help but feel that's got to be an advantage and it's going to
Speaker 2be the survival of the fittest so i'm looking forward to it um what about i tell you he's an old marvel that mazu isn't he a beauty
Speaker 7yeah yeah he's been a terrific horse so um he's out he's outside he's welcome here in sydney he's um he's playing games pre-race and he's going to come down and join um kieran stable in melbourne okay um so this will be his last start for for my stable and uh happy to hand the reins over he's been a fantastic horse for us but i can't run him at ramico rose hill anymore he's just become too much of a handful pre-race i want to say a handful he's not not a nasty horse but he's when we're trying to get him onto the track he knows every inch of that race those two racetracks and he's he's jacking up and he's sort of taking the piss with the ponies and it's just it got a got a bit too hard but he's still i feel like he's still got racing and he's racing really well it's only two starts ago he won a million dollar race um so he'll be a great horse for him and he'll be a he'll run well
Speaker 2what a unique individually is that he
Speaker 7sure is he sure he's one of a he's one
Speaker 2of a kind at marzu if only he could talk i wonder what he would say to you as he says goodbye he says i finally got the better of you joe so good luck kieran um race number 10 at ram week you've got the two favorites you scratched anthracite from last week and astatio mistella oh he's a beauty as well he's got to carry 61 but he's been well supported here on saturday at ram week
Speaker 7you know he should be carrying more weight than he is it's a quality handicap but i don't underestimate what it means you know yeah the weight's the one thing but what it means taking on an up-and-coming horse who's going to get nine kilos off him and give away a head start um you know he hasn't raced at the level uh salem mustala has so far anthracite uh and just to talk people through my thinking there so i was more than happy to give him a crack at 2600 last week and i just but i didn't think it was the right race so he's he'd had the grounding to run that kind of trip to I've wanted to find another nice race to run him and that's ended up being the Rose Hill Gold Cup, which is another week away. So I needed a run in between, being a three-week gap between runs and this is that run. That doesn't mean to say he can't win. He's not there for a look. He's there for a good hit out and he races up on speed and makes his own luck. I find it hard to split them because of that weight difference and I think for quality punters, they just stand those two out and they don't have to worry about that leg.
Speaker 2Yep. If I gave you $100 on the weekend, what would you do with it, Joe?
Speaker 7I'm having it on Cher Wolf.
Speaker 2Yeah. Race eight, number one, Cher Wolf in the WS Cox Plate. Can't wait to see him there at Flemington, mate. It's going to be some race. We appreciate your time as always.
Speaker 7Great. Thanks very much, Gary.
Speaker 2There's Joe Pride there, the champion trainer. Trent Busseton's about to join us as well because he's got his three-year-old Blind Rays. He's also looking after Woolwoven or Woolwoven staying at the Busseton Young Stable there at Cranbourne. And Blind Rays, I reckon it's a tricky gate for Blind Rays. So it'd be interesting to see what Trent has to say about it and what Jamie Mellon, does she take a punt and go forward with no weight on her back with this three-year-old or does she just try and ride him for luck with this speed that's guaranteed up the front end there in the Cox Plate with Land Legend and Light Infantry, man. So it'll be interesting what he has to say there. And he's got a couple of nice three-year-olds going around in the golf bars and Joel is one of those. She was impressive there the other day and she gets Craig Williams from a low gate. Trent Busseton joins us. Hey, Trent. Thanks for your time, mate.
Speaker 8How are you, Gareth? How are you? How are you?
Speaker 2Thanks. I am well. How's your week been?
Speaker 8Yeah, good. No complications. All's well. So a couple more sleeps.
Speaker 2Who's worked better this week, Warwoven or Blind Rays?
Speaker 8I did not see Warwoven. He galloped on Tuesday at Cranbourne and we were at Flemington so I didn't actually see Warwoven. Natalie watched it work and by all accounts, it worked pretty good. It looks very good. It looks. ready to go for sure.
Speaker 2I guess you'd prefer he's buried as well. Like, what do you do from gate nine?
Speaker 8I would say we'll be sliding forward. I think the only positive out of it is I think there's no question Land Legends going forward from its draw in and Light Infantrymen no doubt going to go across so hopefully hopefully we can go across underneath them and get across but obviously we would like some cover but that's what it is. Jamie will sort it out.
Speaker 2Yeah. How do you think you would go with this? As Joe Pride just pointed out, these three-year-olds will have to go through a pain barrier they've probably never really felt before. How do you think you'll handle that?
Speaker 8Everyone's saying that but the three-year-olds go through a pain barrier every year in the Cox Plate. The Cox Plate's always a high-pressure race, isn't it? At Moonee Valley every year, they're all going flat out at the school so it's not like any other Cox Plate's not high-pressure. I mean and three-year-olds always have a record in it so I've got no problem with it being a high-pressure race. We've got 49 and a half kilos.
Speaker 2How's he trained on? Obviously he's had a good campaign so far. Has he improved or is he the same horse that we saw on Guinea's Day?
Speaker 8Look, we were very happy with him on Guinea's Day. He certainly hasn't taken a step backwards and he's only fourth up so I hope there's improvement in him but in saying that he was pretty well on Guinea's Day so he certainly hasn't gone backwards anyway. He looks great in the coat. He will present at his best so he's good enough.
Speaker 2It is bloody exciting anyway, mate. I know your owners are excited. This is what you live for, really.
Speaker 8Yeah, for sure. We could have run in the VARs or gone up to the Spring Champion Stakes but not very often you get a chance. It's a genuine chance in a cocks plate so we're certainly looking forward to it and we think he'll run well.
Speaker 2Who's the horse to beat in your eyes?
Speaker 8Warwoven and Sir Delius. I mean, if Sherwell or Waller's mare, Eliana, if they win, it's no surprise. You know, it's cocks plate. Anyone at 10 can, you know, if they win, it's no surprise but Sir Delius is the benchmark at the end of the day. He's beaten Autumn Glow over 2,000 so and, you know, Buen Sources is flying airborne so I think they're the two to beat.
Speaker 2Both in the two classics, I reckon, heading towards Flemington, the Oaks and the Derby. I think we're all waiting still for a three-year-old really to put their hand up. Jolie, could she be that filly to do that for the Oaks? Yeah, if she could perform well in the VARs on Saturday.
Speaker 8I hope so. Like, we held her up especially to get back to Flemington instead of going in the Ethereal. I think fillies have got a good record in the VARs so, yeah, she's very progressive and she galloped up well on Tuesday so but they are always races that change complexion this week. You know, like, you get the VARs and you get the Spring Champion stakes so I'm picking something out of the Spring Champion stakes will pop. and head down for the Derby or the Oaks but, yeah, we're pretty confident Jolie will be very hard to beat on Saturday.
Speaker 2She's performed well on a soft and heavy track and she was okay there on that good three but it was only over the 1,400 metres at Caulfield. If she's on top of the ground, your thoughts there with her?
Speaker 8I don't think it's an issue. I think it's just circumstantial, sort of. When she ran at Caulfield, they were just too sharp for over 1,400 and she got bumped around a bit but she was solid through the line. She's got a good, a good amount of action. A firm track might be an issue.
Speaker 2And you're going to go to the races there on Saturday with Gil Gaius instead of the meeting now, I think, tomorrow in Victoria? Cranbourne? Yeah. Yeah,
Speaker 8we're the majority owners so you've got no pressure from outward owners. He's not there for a spin round. The horse of Hayes' the ridden tycoon horse, it only just got the better of him by a nose. Two starts ago and it's run well. Last start and it's in the market at 10 so he'll run well.
Speaker 2All right, then at Cranbourne tomorrow night you've got Lath Lane, Sumo Sandy and Pariah Pearl. Any winners there?
Speaker 8Pariah Pearl, genuine each-way chance. Hard to beat. Sumo Sandy probably needs a run from the draw. Lath Lane, the run was better than it looked last start. It was stuck down on the quicksand at the Seymour track on the rail so only got beat a couple of lengths after drawing barrier one but I think probably our best tomorrow is a filly at Ballarat, Laguna Nene. Beautiful. I think she'll be winning.
Speaker 2We've got a bit of money to spare at this luncheon tomorrow. You'll be part of the fun obviously as a special guest. We might have to put all the punters club on that filly then. That's it. In race six. Truck loaded into it. Yes, they'll buy you a helicopter back to Cranbourne that night if you can get the chocolates for us there, Trent. But hey, we wish you the best of luck. If I gave you $100, what would you do with it this weekend, Trent?
Speaker 8Laguna Nene into Jolie.
Speaker 2All right then. Laguna Nene at Ballarat tomorrow into Jolie. Race three, number 11 at Flemington. We appreciate your time as always, mate. Good luck this weekend.
Speaker 6Cheers, Gareth. Thanks.
Speaker 2There's Trent Busset in there. Time for a break. This is Giddy Up Stable Mail. Robbie Archibald and Tyler Donaldson-Akin will join me next.
Speaker 1Join the conversation Text us on 0499 736 736 Live across Australia. This is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 2Welcome back to Giddy Up. This is Giddy Up Stable Mail this Thursday morning on Cox Plate Day at Flemington. Rob and Annabelle Archibald have got some strong chances, some interesting gallopers going around and Rob joins us here on Giddy Up. Rob, hello to you. Thanks for your time as always. Hi, Gareth. How are you? Good, thank you, mate. Gee, his half pipe was enormous there. He's on the quick back up. He goes around the Red Anchor Stakes. How's he trained on or recovered from last Saturday?
Speaker 9Yeah, he seems good. Yeah, I agree. I thought his run was excellent. He's just a little bit unlucky at a vital stage. But yeah, he's had a quiet week. But we haven't sort of gone to the well too many times with him. So hopefully the quick back up he will handle. That's obviously the query. But he'll appreciate the big track this weekend. And I think he's, you know, as long as he handles the back up, he looks a nice chance.
Speaker 2Was that always the plan to back him up after that effort at Caulfield there on Saturday?
Speaker 9No, not necessarily. It was more just with the run he had. He never really had a crack at them. And we thought if we're going to back up, it's probably the right opportunity. And we just thought it looked a nice race for him on Saturday. And yeah, look, he's sort of been running that same race all prep really. So hopefully just the big track at Flemington suits and he gets his chance.
Speaker 2Yeah. How do you think he'll handle the straight?
Speaker 9I think it should be fine. I mean, I think he'll suit him perfectly. I think he'll, yeah, as I said, he certainly should get his chance.
Speaker 2I mean, the Crockett stakes over the 1200 metres. We get to see Cheyenne. We all know she's a very good filly. How would you assess her performances this preparation?
Speaker 9Oh, frustrating, really. I think first up run, she didn't, you know, she had no luck. She was wide and I thought it was just okay. The other day, I thought it was hard to get much of a guide on as she ran home the fastest 400 of the meeting, but the way the track was, I don't know. I thought she had excuses, but she's going to need to perform on Saturday. She had a little jump out, a bit of a confidence-boosting jump out in between, and again, look, she should get her chance and we'll get a much better read from her here.
Speaker 2Yeah, she meets some nice fillies down the straight there at Flemington. Do you think she'll enjoy the straight as well?
Speaker 9Yeah, obviously, query how she handles it, but I see no reason why she won't. She's pretty straightforward. We've put a crossover on her just to try and get her just racing a little bit better than she has been her last couple. Just at certain stages of the race, she's wanted to sort of overdo it a touch, so hopefully she just executes a nice first half of the race and she should be very strong late.
Speaker 2In the Five Diamonds Pro, you'll settle up a couple of chances there. Crystal Clear, that's at $21 there with bet $3.65. An each-way price and depth of character. As well, can any of those two cause an upset first up?
Speaker 9Yeah, both first up. Both good horses on their day. Crystal Clear's trailed up quite nicely. Yeah, he's got a good first up record, so expect him to run well in depth of character. There's no slouch either, so look, they'll obviously improve for the run, but they're there to run well, and as you said, good each-way prices and be disappointed if they're not thereabouts.
Speaker 2Cigar Man, a perfect play there at Doobin Saturday.
Speaker 9Yeah, both, obviously, Cigar Man's been running well. He was a good winner. Two wins. Two starts ago, and he was narrowly denied last start, and perfect plays coming off a nice midweek win back up to Saturday grade. So both look nice chances.
Speaker 2All right, then. If I gave you $100 this weekend, what would you do with it, Rob?
Speaker 9I'm going to go with Cheyenne. I think she gets, you know, I just feel like she's building well, and if she just gets that little bit of luck, I think she should be right there.
Speaker 2So that's race four, number one, Cheyenne there at Flemington on Saturday. Any winners at Scone or Canberra tomorrow?
Speaker 9Rolling home at Scone. He's in that Class 1 1300, and another horse in the same race called Breakout. But rolling home's a good winner last start, so I think it'd be hard to beat.
Speaker 2Yeah, rolling home there at Scone tomorrow. Good on you, Rob. Thanks, Gary. There's Rob Archibald there. Tyler Donaldson-Akin was nearly one of the stories of the spring there in the Chirac when his horse was a mighty third welcome to the show in that Group 1 handicap there at Caulfield to kick off the carnival. And Tyler had a couple of decisions to make. Does he go to Flemington, or does he head to Scone? He's heading to Sydney for the Five Diamonds Prelude, and he's heading to Sydney, and he joins us now. Tyler, hello to you. He's about to join us in just a moment. So we'll catch up with him. Welcome to the show. An excellent chance there on Saturday, I reckon, there at Rural Round Week. I reckon he can win that race with Ashley Morgan aboard. So what price is he at the moment there with bet $3.65? Well, he's at $7. The Clichy Boulevard linebacker at Evaporate, they lead the market. But the way that that horse is running, he's got a lot of money. The horse went there. Welcome to the show at Caulfield. Boy, he's got to be a big hope. And he joins us now, Tyler. Hello to you, mate. Thanks for your time. Okay, how are you going, mate? Good, thanks, mate. Was it an easy decision to go to Sydney instead of Melbourne with him? No. No. Why did you go to Sydney?
Speaker 10The money's hard to turn. I turned down with a race that I thought was slightly weaker. Question mark, travel.
Speaker 2Yeah. He went to Goulburn, performed pretty well. The travel, does it bother him?
Speaker 10Not really. I mean, like I said, it always takes something out of him to a certain degree. But he's down there. He arrived at John Thompson's this morning. John's been fantastic. Last time he went there and won it at Randwick. So we stay with John again. He does an A1 job, so we'll see how he goes. He's all reports. He's arrived safe and sound. I'll fly up tomorrow night and be there for Friday night, obviously, and Saturday morning track work and race him and see how he goes. But, yeah, it was tricky. But, you know, do you go to Melbourne, no travel. He's won at Flemington. Against horses, you'd say he's got a really good chance against. A couple of handy enough horses in there that have been proven over, you know, same distance and pretty good grade. So a bit of a question mark there. But then you've got Sydney with the prize money that's obviously double, nearly double, and a field that you could nearly argue is slightly weaker. Yeah. Out of a barrier that's favourable. I was hoping that one of them, one location would draw a wide barrier and a hard field and make the decision easy. But it didn't end up being that case, you know. So we've gone Sydney with the idea of what the original plan was, which is five diamonds prelude in the five diamonds, into the possibility of then looking at the railway or something back home in Victoria. But, yeah, either way, we went Sydney.
Speaker 2He was so. He was so big in that Turac. Has he trained on well since then?
Speaker 10He appears to have. Yeah. There's nothing that shows that he hasn't. Excuse me. You know, he was a month from the listed race into the Turac with a trial in between. Obviously worked well. Two weeks now into this race into Sydney with the travel. Always a little bit of a question mark. But if he delivers similar to what he did on Turac Day, you'd say he can. Yeah, very, very close and win it. Yeah. It's just, yeah, just the travel always takes a little bit out of him. But he travels well, stables well in new locations. He's a nice, quiet horse. So it all goes in our favour as far as having to venture in different locations to hunt down the fields and the rewards we want.
Speaker 2Will you go and get them, mate? If I gave you $100 this weekend, what would you do with it? I'd put it on the nose. Beautiful. That's what we love about your race. Nine, number seven. Welcome to the show at Randwick in the five diamonds prelude on Saturday. Your time is always, mate. Thanks, mate. There's Tyler Donaldson. Akin will take a break. Trent Edmonds to join me next. He's got, of course, Extra Galactic going around in the McEwen Stakes at Flemington on Saturday.
Speaker 1Join the conversation. Text us on 0499 736 736. Live across Australia.
Speaker 2Welcome back to Giddy Up, Gareth. Paul, it's great to have your company on this Thursday morning. It's an exciting time of the year. And Trent Edmonds has got East Philly flying Extra Galactic. And she deserves to win a race like this. And she'll be hard to beat. You would imagine the McEwen Stakes, James McDonald's being booked again. And Trent joins us now.
Speaker 11G'day, Trent. Hey, Gareth. How are you?
Speaker 2It's got to go your way one day in a big race, I reckon.
Speaker 11We can hope. We can hope.
Speaker 2How is she?
Speaker 11She's fantastic. I can't fault her. She's had a beautiful time between the Manicato and now. And freshened up nicely. She's sharpened up as well. I think she's going better than she was before the Manicato. So, all is well.
Speaker 2Yeah, if that's the case, and if she can handle the straight, boy, she's going to be hard to beat.
Speaker 11Yeah, I would hope so. And that's the million-dollar question, isn't it? The straight track. But I think that she'll be fine. I don't see any reason to say no. As to why she wouldn't handle it. And, yeah, as I said, she's perfect at home. And we've had a faultless preparation. So, can't fault her.
Speaker 2Yeah. I heard that you had a few offers to go to the Everest. Was it tempting?
Speaker 11Yeah, I did. And there was a few sort of sleepless nights about it. Just tossing and turning. But I decided against it. Just want to try and build a profile. hopefully for the next 12 months and um you know i liked it to sort of a football player or a tennis player sort of obviously afterthought but she was trained for moira and manikano and then um whatever happened after that you know i just sort of didn't really have it on the radar unless she come out and won both of those races so um yeah it was it was tempting but yeah just decided against it and just holding it off for 12 months it took all
Speaker 2of my power to have a crack yeah and there's always next year um what do you do with her after this there's a few options for her i would imagine just
Speaker 11see how we get through saturday um obviously uh there is some temptation to run in the champion sprint should we get a nice result on saturday um we could hold her back for the all the week after or freshen up and go to the winter bottom the only only problem with the winter bottom is um it's sort of very deep into the spring and you probably need to be going to the paddock to prepare for autumn um to give yourself enough time and a little bit of a spell you know yeah
Speaker 2if i gave you a hundred dollars mate what would you do with it this weekend having a
Speaker 11straight on that's race five
Speaker 2number eight extra galactic there at flemington the mckeown stakes you go and get a mate appreciate that good good man thank you there's trent edmunds um heaps of text messages coming through get them in for kevin blake he will know everything about the international horses that you need to know for the melbourne cup so if you've got a question for kev let us know um john sargent and kiramar will join us to wrap up giddy up stable mail and this listener makes a good point why is point of law that you're afraid he's an omni man still in the mooney valley gold cup they should be scratched i agree they're not going around so i just scratched them which takes out the percentages there for the market we can punt but they should be doing that now it's 8.58, time for a break.
Speaker 1join the conversation text us on 0 4 double 9 7 3 6 7 3 6 live across australia this is giddy up with gareth hall welcome back to giddy
Speaker 2up gareth hall with you on this thursday morning i can't wait for the next hour the champion trainer kira maru is just completely on fire at the moment he'll be joining us um and uh he had a big day once again yesterday geelong kevin blake who is a superstar media performer there in ireland and england he dominates the airwaves and he's also the racing manager for joseph o'brien he knows these international horses back the front so i can't wait to have an extended chat to kevin blake this morning here in our studios in melbourne on giddy up and then of course we'll be catching up with david gately for an all-important gator game plan out of cox plate day but kira maru is he ready to go the champion trainer he is um and let's catch up now with kieran who i don't know if we got point of law that won yesterday and i'll catch up with kieran now he's ready to go hey kieran congratulations well done mate thank
Speaker 12you guys um great
Speaker 2result it was a great result wasn't it like obviously he was a horse that you purchased off the king and um he arrived here in australia a lightly raced galloper um we heard some stories at werribee that he was a little bit mad but then to see him do what he did there it was an unbelievable performance did he surprise you
Speaker 12no no not at all um he's you know his form out of europe was very good um you know he's a horse as i said to the owners and connections yesterday um you know he definitely had enough ability to win the race it was just whether uh he got it all right um you know haveling it's only still only his first race in preparation and he's still quite quite raw but i said to him said to them that uh you know he definitely uh has the ability the big question
Speaker 2is how did eileen do it how did she talk the king into selling you a horse like that who's now the favorite for the melbourne cup because he always wanted to win the melbourne cup the king and he's just giving it away
Speaker 12that's fantastic you know like he's obviously you know well he he wasn't um a cheap horse by any means um he was well credentialed and you know we we paid a price for him that um yes you know um hopefully he's a cheap horse in the end but um you know um fair play to the owners he's traveled over you know as i said to them if he won yesterday um fantastic we can entertain the idea of going to the melbourne cup if he comes through fine but if he didn't win you know you probably don't want to go to the melbourne cup anyway with such a young
Speaker 2horse who rides now oh yeah i'm gonna
Speaker 12work that out this morning jeez your
Speaker 2phone would have been busy i would imagine
Speaker 12it's been very busy
Speaker 2so will it be a local international hoop uh most
Speaker 12likely a local yeah um and i remember
Speaker 2throughout the spring mate i've asked you that question who's your best chance in the melbourne cup and you've always said middle earth has you has your mind being changed now after watching point of law at geelong yesterday
Speaker 12uh no i reckon middle earth prep is just going along very well these statistics are good and you know you've got to have the engine to win the melbourne cup and he's certainly got that um yeah i still think he's he's right up there i think um chocolates is gonna have yeah pretty well the ideal prep and get in with the nice weight and uh yeah i think saint george saint george is going on very well as well let's have a chat
Speaker 2about the cox plates um i think it's going to be a good one i think it's going to be a good one um it is going to be a great race and you're going to have two horses that'll be setting some tempo you would imagine in this year's great race i i can't believe that light infantry man's 31 so what's he done wrong at the market he just continues to drift but i thought he was mighty in that turnbull
Speaker 12he's he's 2000 meter form that flemington is his best form he's been beaten you know he's last up in the turnbull you know he's had he's had all the good horses behind him um it was only cosmic crusader that got over the top of him and um yeah he the stronger the race the better he goes the stronger the tempo um yeah i was a bit surprised at the price as well but um um i don't really know the answer to your question why is he drifting um i don't know maybe he's an older gelding i don't know i was a bit bewildered myself but anyway the market's the market is it fair
Speaker 2to say that it's a big positive that land legend is in the race as well because even though he led there the other day he seems to be a better chaser following like a pride of jenny like he did in that australia cup
Speaker 12yeah well the generally if you've got if he's doing it if he is the tempo um you know he's so fast but if he has another horse like him like a prodigy or a land legend he seems to just go that little bit better and i think it's just the case of the tempo is stronger therefore he goes better rather than having something to chase
Speaker 2um how quick do you think that they will go well he went
Speaker 12um he went track record pace at core fields um and he looked comfortable doing that so uh i would imagine we'll try and do the same thing yeah who's
Speaker 2your best chance in a cox plate
Speaker 12light inventory man i think saint george is not far away either okay
Speaker 2blake shin gets the ride there um mooney valley gold cup um you've got juja kabo king's valley um jenny vermoosa mr monaco who's your best there
Speaker 12uh i think uh juja kibo as um juja kibo there's not much between a couple of juja kibo is in great form um i reckon he's probably in career best form um king's valley was you know i reckon he should have been fighting at the finish in a uh corfield cup so i think he's he's in very good order um jenny vermoosa whether um yeah whether we go here here or bendigo and mr monaco is in good form as well winning the bar cummings so um i would say juja or king's valley yeah um another
Speaker 2wheel can he bounce back over the mile
Speaker 12i think he can yeah right the other day whether it was just a little bit quick turnaround off a off a good run um my is the only real reason i can come up with he does mix his form a fraction now he's older but um uh i think the gap between runs flemington he's good a mile he's good yeah there's a few ticks on saturday a lot of people
Speaker 2asking me about angels fury where do you start her this weekend does she go to cramburn or does she go to flemington
Speaker 12uh i'll have to work that out yet um i've always sort of i always sort of like the idea of cramburn yeah and then going up in trip um but uh the the race at flemington the crockett did come up softer than expected so hence why she's in there um
Speaker 2we're back school for the derby should we still be confident um he's on the quick back up here in the golf bars your thoughts there yeah he just
Speaker 12got it wrong on saturday um well i haven't made up my mind whether he takes his place yet but i'm not sure i'm going to be able to do that i'm not sure i'm going to be able to do that uh i think he is the right horse for the derby it's just getting him right so whether we think he needs to run again or not he just he was actually good through the line but he he was far too keen um far too keen during the race and it just took the shine off him and just upset his whole rhythm so uh yeah he's still very much on track the derby's um still quite open i think um so um yeah yeah yeah he's the right horse but we need to get him right scaroly
Speaker 2goes around there and the um champion stakes there in sydney he's been each way price nash rides your thoughts there
Speaker 12uh wraps yeah uh he's he's had a he's had a great preparation scaroly just you can see he's uh he's not the fully sort of furnished well-rounded product yet he still does little things wrong but he's got a bit of heart scaroly each each time he's sort of challenged in the closing stages he's He's right there for his rider, and Nash sat on him now. He's drawn well. He's an each-way chance for sure.
Speaker 2Can Viviera Elias win a Craven plate?
Speaker 12Again, there's tried and true form in this race. Elias will roll forward, and Lindemann, and there's not much between them. So, yeah, if he gets things to go his way, he's going to be not far away.
Speaker 2Your favourite horse, Kieran Starr. The horse named after you goes around the Brian Crowley Stakes. You decided to go to Sydney with her. Your thoughts about Kieran Starr?
Speaker 12Yeah, Craig Sneasby. I was shocking then. Anyway, the horse is good. That's the main thing. I've really come on the right way from her first start, this prep, and I think it'll be very hard to beat. It's probably one of our better chances for the weekend.
Speaker 2You've got spywire barracks. I can't go through all of them, because we'll be here all day. If I gave you $100 this weekend, Kieran, and you've got 10 commandments there at Cranbourne, you've got a few nice chances there at Cranbourne on Friday night, what would you do with $100? Because you are on fire. It's been an unbelievable run that you're having.
Speaker 12I would have something on Rosarito in the Kirkham. Yes. Just a little sniffle there. All right. Maybe something in good place. Yeah. Kieran Starr, I'll have the majority. Yes. That would be me. All right. Then beautiful. Maybe Angel Fury.
Speaker 2All right. Wherever she goes. We'll be backing her with some confidence. And Tempta, does she come to Flemington for the champion sprint?
Speaker 12I think she does. Yeah. We're the team of speaking to Andy and Jason during the week. And yeah. Keen to give her a look down the straight. Yeah, she's travelled down to Melbourne. So she hasn't been down the straight, so she's handled most things so far. So she's in good form, so looking forward to that.
Speaker 2And how's pride of Jenny?
Speaker 12Pride of Jenny, yeah, coming good. Sort of hung around and she was a bit sore for a while. That little infection she had, but she's on the mend.
Speaker 2Yeah. And Pyrose still?
Speaker 12Yeah. Still at this stage. It's not smooth sailing, but yeah, there's always ups and downs. Exciting, mate. Geez,
Speaker 2you're having a run and a half. It's been unbelievable to watch. We wish you the best of luck this Saturday and we appreciate your time as always.
Speaker 12Cheers, Gary. There's
Speaker 2the champion trainer, Kieran Mark. Kevin Blake, to you. Kevin Blake, to join me in the studio straight after this. Text us on 0499-736-736. I'm excited to have our next guest in the studio.
Speaker 1We've talked to him a fair bit here on Giddy Up in
Speaker 2the lead up to our Melbourne Spring Carnival, but he's a man that I've admired from afar. He's a racing expert. He's a racing expert at the races, which is like the Sky Racing, Racing.com of Ireland and England. He works for ITV Racing, which is like the Channel 7 coverage there in England and Ireland. But he's not only a media star, he's a bloodstock expert, and he also is the racing manager in a way, or the race planner for Joseph O'Brien, who could have five or six runners in our great race on that first Tuesday in November. And he joins us in the studio. Kevin, welcome to Giddy Up. We appreciate you coming in, mate. No, I'm delighted to be here.
Speaker 13I've been watching and listening from afar. You've been on in my hotel room non-stop since I've been here too. So it's great to be here. How are you feeling, mate? Is Melbourne what you expected it to be? You went to the Geelong Cup there yesterday. How would you describe your first couple of days? It's been great. Look, we set out to be non-stop from start to finish.
Speaker 2I've never flown this far in my life. I don't know how it's supposed to feel. Everyone's asking me, are you all right?
Speaker 13my younger years, I used to jump in the van with Ken, the barrier and go and follow the ballydoll horses around and at that time joseph was literally you know three and a half foot tall welded to his dad's hip just watching everything and you know aiden you know aiden and marie as well as everything they've achieved in racing you know they've managed to somehow like raise their four kids really really well to be very successful in their own sense and you could see that from when he was tiny like aiden was trying to involve him and making sure he was involved and you know kids can go one way or the other with their parents they could they could they can listen or they can go to complete opposite direction and joseph just listened clearly and um you know what's what strikes you when you're working with him and he comes from you know the background that he does and everyone will you know assume privilege and etc but you know he's like a guy that was born in the gutter you know he's so hungry he wants success yeah and i'd say there's no doubt he has a bit of a chip in his shoulder that he wants to show that look i'm not just aiden son you know i'm joseph o'brien and i'm going to go and make my own way here and uh do things um that that his dad hasn't done which he's already done in the melbourne cup and look he's he's still a very young man he's only whatever 33 and um look he's only getting going really he's least
Speaker 2he's unbelievable really and aiden he tried there for a few years in a melbourne cap and i don't know if he's given up on the melbourne cap i talked to tom magnier there yesterday and he says that the lads um the cool more lads still want to win a melbourne cup but um the melbourne cup is one of the big grand slam races around the world like i remember when shayt muhammad won it for codolphin like that was the the melbourne cup the kentucky derby the arc de triomphe they're the the big races that you want to win yeah um so i'm sure that uh i don't know if they're a competitive family or not whether i i like joseph would go come on dad and you can't be you've got to have the melbourne cup on your resume and i've already got two
Speaker 13yeah they're the most competitive people you'd ever meet that you wouldn't think are competitive yeah yeah they're not very outward but they're they're they're fierce and look the melbourne cup i think it's one of those things that when people get down and see it that changes everything yeah you know that changes everything they realize oh my god you know this race is worth a lot of money that's that's the obvious thing but then you get down and you feel it and i'm i haven't been down to feel it yet myself but i know because i've been a little bit fixated with it for 20 years yeah but i think that's that's the case with the race and look with aid and with cool more you know they went very close a couple of times you know the last obviously five six years have been have been challenging yeah um you know the vet protocols you know there's there's been there's been a lot of frustration with them at times um and that's boiled over at times too and i i've been guilty of that uh more than once yeah and it was it was very genuine and heartfelt in the moment but look we we feel things have improved this year yeah and there's been there's been some personnel changes and you know we from our side have felt that the process has been uh a bit more pragmatic and and and sensible this time around and look as a result there's a real big team of horses down here and i think you know you hope charlie appleby starts coming again you know he stopped coming because he was he was pretty um frustrated he was pretty angry when i talked to him yeah he was pretty put out the first year of those protocols and you know i think he said as much look i'm not having runners down here again until things change but you know what i
Speaker 2reckon if he aiding came here he would probably and it's difficult for him because he's got the so much going on and it's tough to soak it all up but i don't know and you probably you understand it a little bit better like the melbourne cup is our race it's like the outside of the racing public everybody watches that and and um we couldn't really afford another fatality we probably went too far but we had to in a way um but now hopefully as you point out like joseph he's brought an army here to australia so obviously it's starting to work a little bit better now the balance is starting to get right and i think it's going to be a good time to get back to it yeah look a hundred
Speaker 13percent and look look we really we do get it like yeah we we do we really get it because we're through we have been through and i suppose they're still going through yeah yeah you know with the grand national you know we we get a comparable level of negative scrutiny from the same sorts of um you know blue-haired people when the when the time comes i heard you
Speaker 2on piers morgan that day you excellent a wonderful ambassador for the game that was a massive audience that you had to perform in front of but just to explain what this game's all about in a
Speaker 13look it's tough and it's it's a horrible feeling when you're being scrutinized and your your intentions are being questioned you know when we know beyond question yeah you know what how much we all care and how much effort is put in to make it make sure that the the risk levels are as low as possible it's frustrating to be scrutinized like that and it can it can lead to almost fear driven decisions and then they're usually not good ones yeah and you know and there'll be a like we did and i know there's definitely a view up here that initially the increased vet protocols you know did go too far and you know that that was very much my view you know the full body bone scan i thought was a barbaric thing to add to ask of a horse yeah thankfully it only lasted for one year um what a horse state of rest is to come through that and come down and win a cocks plate you know and we feel that year by year they're being the protocols are being adjusted like i still think there's maybe one thing, at least one thing that needs to be looked at. There's still a bit of a discrepancy there with horses, international horses that have had like orthopedic surgery. Historically like much earlier in their life, they're not eligible to come down here. So that would have been, the example for that would have been something like Etigal Diamond. They would have loved to have brought him down last year but he'd had a screw much earlier in his life which basically made it the red line that he couldn't come down. But I suppose the contradiction is if Etigal Diamond had been switched down to an Australian based trainer, he could have been he would have been eligible to run and that's a clear contradiction to me and I think there's a very logical case to be made to change that and for the horse to be allowed to go through the rigorous process that's there and if they're considered suitable to come forward, they should be allowed to. But really that's my only poke left at them. I think where we, like the standing CTs it's tough on a horse to be sedated so heavily but I think it's not unreasonable.
Speaker 2No. I think they're getting the balance right now and we've seen that with more representation especially from Europe this time around. I've got to take a break. Don't go anywhere. I've got to ask you about these internationals. I want to ask you about Point of Law who was so dominant but Small Fry and Omni-Man were very good behind him in yesterday's Geelong Cup and then of course with a few of the internationals that we haven't seen just yet. This is Giddy Up. My special guest is Kevin Blake and David Gately's not far away either. For Gator's Game Plan ahead of Cox Plate
Speaker 1Day. Text us on 04009 736 736 Live across Australia.
Speaker 2My special guest is Kevin Blake, the international racing expert who does work there for At The Races and IT Racing in Ireland in the UK and obviously is the racing manager for Joseph O'Brien as well. Were you surprised with Point of Law yesterday in the Geelong Cup?
Speaker 13I wouldn't say well I was a little bit. You know I would I didn't feel he was value as price now. I was just poking at his his UK form a little bit because look they're well credentialed races but I didn't feel that they were necessarily the strongest renewals of them this year. But look he's unexposed you know lacked experience, had a tough draw, you know had had a tricky time in Werribee now you know because our guys have obviously been watching them very closely and one of Joseph's lads, Dara Davis, has actually been riding him out because I think that the rider they had for him was having a tough time with him in there. He's not easy.
Speaker 2Well I don't think we should be allowing if you've got a, I don't think Joseph wonder if Joseph's still going to allow that, his kid to ride his horse. He can't be giving Kira Marr an advantage.
Speaker 13I was going to say Kira Marr better get the checkbook out because yeah, Dara deserves a big bonus. But look, there's a great, there's a great team spirit there in Werribee, you know even amongst the, I suppose the rival teams, you know, everyone's come a long way and you know they'll always help each other out because they'd like to be helped out if they needed help too so. I was really impressed with them, you know, they were brave to go forward like they did, you know, with what can be quite a free-going horse and they seem to go along really well. I'm not as familiar with the section of the pairs over here but they seem to be, you know, going along really well and look, it was a bit of a sickener not to run them down. Yeah. But look, when you're bringing a big international team of horses such a long way and there's so many variables, you know, you're just, you're delighted to see them run as well as they did but we're not here for silver medals either. And you know, for those two in particular, Small Fry and Omni Man, like that was their potential ticket to the big dance which is what it's all about. So I'd be, I'd only be lying if I said I didn't want to go to bed a little bit deflated but you're just, you're delighted to see them run so well and do their connections proud, you know.
Speaker 2Because they're done now, it's unlikely they'll get into the Melbourne Cup, Omni Man and also Small Fry.
Speaker 13Yeah, like it would need to completely fall apart numbers-wise for them to get in so they're more than likely going to be looking to the Saturday after the Cup. Queen Elizabeth. That would be the most obvious one definitely for Small Fry. Omni Man would maybe have another option or two. Like he ran huge, you know, missed the kick a little bit on it early, you know, was the only one to get in. He was the only one to get into it from off the pace, you know, got flung very wide off the bend. You know, he's like, to be honest, I kind of fancied him yesterday. I thought he was price yeah um he's a talented horse he's going to have a big day yeah he's going to have a real big day in the not too distant future i think
Speaker 2the market's probably overreacted a little bit point of law is now the favorite for the lexus melbourne cup with bet 365 at eight dollars trust your instinct nine dollars defiantly eleven dollars um and then you've got your horse and i've got a small share now and james j braddock at 13 so like it is bloody exciting um um so who's the best of the the joseph o'brien runs you probably get asked this all the time yeah and i always kick
Speaker 13it kick straight to touch because we've got a lot of time to go between now and then but look to see the two horses run so well yesterday and and look they're not second stringers but you know it the the five that are that are guaranteed in you know you hope and you think are up a level and to see point of law do that as well was very encouraging for james j because you know point of law laws form in the uk you know the races he's running in they're the races for the three-year-olds that aren't quite good enough and sharp enough to run in the likes of a derby you know which james j did and did very well so you know they're going to end up carrying quite a similar weight in the cup now and the point of law has come down and shown he can do it in these in in this environment which you know puts two big two big ticks next to his name james j hasn't done that yet but um to see that three-year-old form which has been it gets poked out a little bit at home that the three-year-old middle distance form at the minute just so so to see point of law do that you know is very encouraging but look i feel i feel they're a real strong bunch of horses yeah and they've all traveled well they're all training well they're all super fresh um you know it's all moving in the right direction
Speaker 2at the minute is to finally sharpen up to win a melbourne
Speaker 13cap well this that's the main question for me garrett like when it comes to draw and hopefully we get that far um i'd like to see him drawing out a little bit yeah because when you watch his runs he can be a little bit slow at the start and if he was drawn you know two or three and he misses the kick by two lengths that you know they'll kill him yeah because you want him to get to the front yeah you know you he does he races in a very unusual way and if he found his way to the front in the cup that changes the race because he he is going to be merciless from the front yeah you know he can go a gallop and he will start pouring on the coal from you know four down five down and you saw in his most recent race in the cargillay you know he was up against some some really well credential stairs and he completely cooked them yeah you know he completely cooked them because he took them to a very uncomfortable place a long way out and he just drowned them yeah and if you know in my in my mind's eye you know i would just love to see what would happen if he if if to find he's in a position to start pouring the coal on you know halfway down the back straight in the cup because that's gonna who rides him i i have a pretty good idea but i just you know yourself
Speaker 2i've got a pretty good idea too yeah i don't know can i can i have my guess and you can or i i it has to be dilla mac doesn't it surely well because he knows how to ride it um i think he's it'd be it's a like it's a he'd be tricky horse to ride to get right i would imagine he'd be a tricky horse to ride to get right i would imagine i would imagine as well yeah
Speaker 13well look the nature of joseph and i'm with him long enough to know not to step out of line with it is you don't make a decision until you have to make a decision we've we've a pretty good idea of what way the the ball is going to hop with all of them but things change and you you hate to um i suppose give people a bum steer by saying right this is what's going to happen and something changes and and circumstances change and things change so when do you make your
Speaker 2mind up with your jockey oh it's as
Speaker 13late as it's as late as possible like i say look in my mind they're 99 locked in yeah because you would have
Speaker 2had to book jockeys then and then you'll decide who they ride yeah it's so
Speaker 13it's so competitive for the top jockeys and look we you can you can rest assured that we're going to have a pretty a pretty spectacular lineup of jockeys all being well but um i just wouldn't like to give anyone a potential wrong steer by saying he x rides y and so on but but look dylan knows him really well and like you say but he'll be here he oh yeah yeah yeah look he's just come back he's like dylan's had a had a mental year really because he's had the best year of his career in terms of the wins he's had and it's just been spectacular but he's also had two pretty serious falls and injuries um but look he came back a week ago he's ridden the winner and look with every passing day he's going to be getting better and better yeah and look i know uh you've seen him down here before but this lad's the he's the real deal yeah
Speaker 2and um no he's exciting because and the job that joseph's done with defiantly because kisly are the horse we've got a heap of text message coming through through there like if you watch kisly he's beaten defiantly we're all on defiantly at royal ascot and we couldn't believe like he got beat by kisly and he's not even in the in the field yet for the
Speaker 13melbourne yeah yeah look i fancied defiantly at ascot as well you know but look we're probably still learning about him in a way and we we knew the headgear we certainly very much hope the headgear would be a big help to him that day but we didn't we hadn't really i suppose figured out that he would be a big help but we didn't we hadn't really figured out that he would be a big help but we didn't we hadn't really figured out that he would be a big help but we didn't we hadn't really figured out that he would be a big help but we didn't we hadn't really figured out that he would be a big help but we didn't we hadn't really figured out that he would be a big help but we didn't really figured out that he would be a big help but we didn't really figured out that he would be a big help but we didn't really figured out that he would be a big help but we didn't really figured out that he would be a big help but we didn't really figured out that he would be a big help
Speaker 2soon enough yeah how exciting is that to have a horse like that like he's like a pride of jenny in a way that um she's our superstar that runs flat out for most of the way so the blinkers has done the trick it's going to be exciting to see what he can do hey i've got to take one more break then i'm going to get your top three um don't sit on the fence either kevin blake we're paying you the big bucks here to have an opinion we'll take a break gate is not far away as well um and we'll get um kevin blake's top three for the melbourne cup next join the conversation text us on
Speaker 1049-736-736 live across australia this is giddy up with gareth hall welcome back to giddy up david
Speaker 2gailey not far away for gator's game plan but kevin blake is our special guest um obviously he is the superstar fat the racer's and itv in in ireland in the uk as i mentioned at the races like sky racing and itv racing's the channel 7 coverage that they have over there on free to wear tv and then he's joseph o'brien's assistant trainer so i want you to put your media hat on not joseph o'brien's hat on um your top three for the melbourne cup right now well you
Speaker 13see i i'd never do that gareth because the problem is yes i hate i hate and i just sometimes you're obliged to lock in selections early yes and it's a key to get you to lock in selections early and it's a key to get you to lock in selections early and it's a killer because we don't know what the ground is we don't know what the draw is a very good point you make and it could things can flip and i just myself i just hate doing it because no one likes changing their mind when you when you've locked yourself in publicly and even though if you think it's the right thing to do so um i'm definitely not going you're not you can pull and drag me now but you're not going to lock me in but i'm more than happy to go through them all and i'll ask you quickly
Speaker 2because i've only got about five minutes or so left trust or instinct nine dollars he settled in well yeah
Speaker 13look they've all settled in well That goes without saying, thankfully. He's a funny, he's not a funny horse, but he seemed like he leveled off in Ireland and found his level until he went up in trip. Yeah. You know, and since then, he looks to have lifted his level again. He's got a great set of tools for the race. You know, you can ride him any which way you want. He's been ridden a little bit quietly since he's gone up in trip. Travels, quickens, loves fast ground. So has the right credentials.
Speaker 2Why is Goody Two Shoes $26 after she finished second in the cup last year?
Speaker 13Yeah, I don't know. Because the pre-race, you know, we really didn't want the rain for her last year. You know, because she would gallop down the road for you, you know, and she ran huge, weighed in Lord and gave her a beautiful ride from a wide draw. She had a bit of a hold up earlier this year. She went out to Saudi and got travel sickness, so couldn't run and then needed a good break after that. So that's why her form has, I suppose, an Aussie shape to it, you know, is run to run improvement. Don't worry about her. Last run, that's what, you know, I'd be happy to overlook that. And look, this has been her thing all year, getting her back here. JP McManus and his family, you know, got such a massive kick out of the whole thing last year. And JP's coming down himself this week. I'll warn you. Is he really?
Speaker 2Yeah. Do you reckon we can get him on Giddy Up or not? Because he'll be one of my favourite people. Along with John Magney, I'd love to interview JP McManus.
Speaker 13I'd be impressed if you get him on. Yeah. I'll try.
Speaker 2He's the very best.
Speaker 13Yeah, you'd really enjoy him. Yeah. And he will definitely be at the call of the card. And I would be suggesting to everyone to keep a close eye on that table because the. He's a punter, isn't he? One of the biggest. The Sundance Kid was his nickname. That was his background. You know, he was an on-course bookmaker. And he would have had some absolutely legendary punts over the years. And in a scenario like that, where there's the sort of volume available that there is, at least. At the call of the card. I'm not pre-empting, but just keep an eye because he could do something pretty cool.
Speaker 2Does he have to get the tick from Joseph to back it?
Speaker 13Well, JP, he's not. He wouldn't be an emotional punter. He punts to win. And he would be arming himself. with all the relevant information before he pulled the trigger. Hey, what about Sons and Lovers? There's been no chat about Sons and Lovers, and this surprises me a bit because he, like the Red Sea handicap at Saudi that he won earlier this year, it's not the same, but it's not an incomparable race to the Melbourne Cup, and he zipped around there, travelled so well, you know, he seems better than ever, and again, I just think he has the right set of tools for this race, and there's been no chat about him at all, and that's dangerous because he is a factor for sure.
Speaker 2Kislyar, can he win the Moonee Valley Cup Saturday?
Speaker 13Look, in a perfect world, Gareth, we'd love to go to the Cup fresh. Yes, but that won't be able to happen.
Speaker 2Well, look, it could.
Speaker 13I wouldn't like to say the decision is locked in because he's right along the borderline, and it just depends on what the guy's risk appetite is like. We had him very well lined up for a handicap hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival last March, and we were very, very sweet on him, and he missed out by one to get in there, so it might be one spit and twice shy. But look, if he goes to Flemington, you know, his draw looks kind. You know, he'll be a big factor on the day if he goes there. Beat defiantly at Ascot, you know, stays well, easy, prominent ride. You know, again, like to me, Gareth, the Melbourne Cup, and I've been obsessing about it for long enough, as much about class, it's about tool sets, you know, in a European context, because there's lots of real good stairs in Europe that you really shouldn't think about sending down here because they don't have the tool set. And Kislyar has the right tool set for the race, I believe.
Speaker 2It's bloody exciting, mate. We could talk all day, but we'll get your top threes. We get closer to the Lexus Melbourne Cup. We'll talk to you on numerous occasions because, obviously, there's still a lot to play out. Key gallops, buried draws.
Speaker 13You haven't even mentioned James Jay. No, well, we're going to talk about James.
Speaker 2In fact, I was about to mention him. I don't want to keep him under wraps, but he looks like he's beautifully weighted. If Defiantly goes flat out, will that be an advantage or disadvantage for him?
Speaker 13I think he'll stay. I think he'll stay. You know, his mechanics, his pedigree, you know, I think he's going to stay. And look, in terms of handicapping and weights, you know, I think there's a very clear case to be made that he's potentially well handicapped because he's handicapped off the bases I was running, and he's handicapped off the bases I was running, in the derby. And as you know, like, he lost his mind before the derby. Like, it was really bad. Like, the public wouldn't even realise how much he lost his mind because they didn't show it on TV because it was 18s only. He just, he was very bad. He was very bad. I've never been as upset in my life. Thought it was, you know, this once-in-a-lifetime experience. You're there, the rain has come, you think it's all lining up, and then he does that. I could have just melted into the ground
Speaker 2How will you handle Melbourne Cup day then?
Speaker 13Well, look, he's two stone lighter now. He's been kelded, and his behaviour before his most recent run at Leopardstown was impeccable. He's very fresh and well here. Like, he is still a man, and he still takes a bit of handling, but his mind does seem to be more settled. And I loved his run at Leopardstown. It was picture perfect in terms of, you know, he went there needing the run, and there was no pressure on him. He already had enough done to be guaranteed. He had a run in the Cup, and in pure form terms, like, he ran very close to what he did in the derby. And like I say, those form lines, to me, are up a level to what Point of Law was doing in Europe. So. Look, yeah, just needs wet. The rain would help. Well, look, it was fast ground at Leopardstown last time, and when he won his derby trial in the spring, so it wouldn't be a concern. But if, like the derby, if the rain fell, you just know he's going to love it, and there's plenty that won't. Yeah. And look, we've got Craig Williams as well, so.
Speaker 2Big time jock. What would it mean to you to win a Melbourne Cup? Off the scale. Yeah, you can't put words into it, really. Like, it is the. I think having a run is living the dream, but if you can win the Melbourne Cup.
Speaker 13Oh, look, experience of a lifetime to be here. Forget about the English derby. and have that involvement. You know, he's just been a dream horse, Gareth. Yeah. People, you know, there's people who spend tens and tens of millions to try and experience these things, and they don't get there. No. You know, so I'm not taking a second of it for granted. And the Cup in particular, just to give you a quick anecdote about me and the Cup. Yeah. Back on Mac, nearly 20 years ago, I worked for an Australian trainer called Jeremy Gask in the UK for two years, and his main owner was a guy called Tony Bloom, who owns Brighton Football Club. He's a big, big owner in the UK and Ireland, and he's married to an Australian lady, and we were given the instruction, if you can buy a horse that gets. that gets to the Melbourne Cup. You know, that is it. So since then, like, I've just been fixating on what it takes to get to a Melbourne Cup, and we almost got him there. We ended up getting a horse called Shawadi. Yeah. He hit a few bumps on the road. He ended up going back to Alan de Roy Dupree. He eventually came up here. He won the Herbert Power, and he missed out getting into the Cup by one. Yeah. You know, so my journey, my personal journey with the Melbourne Cup goes back a long way, and, uh, for Joseph to have won it twice is some of the biggest thrills I've ever had without even being there, just watching it on TV. Just epic stuff. And to be here with a direct involvement, mind-blowing, to be honest.
Speaker 2Yeah. Well, will you go and get him with James J. Braddock? Tell him, Joseph, forget about the rest. That's the one that he wants, that we need to be winning the Melbourne Cup. But bring it on, mate. You're going to enjoy it. We appreciate you coming in. We'll get you in on a few more occasions, if that's okay. Before we are great, race, mate. We love it.
Speaker 13Yeah, I love this game. It's the only thing I want to think about. And coming in, talking racing with you guys, it's not a job.
Speaker 2When you're running down the Yarra River, just think you're James J. Braddock and Williams goes for home just to find a bit of extra energy in that last two Ks, mate, on your long runs. But we appreciate you coming in, mate. Sit back and listen to, he's one of our best form gurus, David Gately, for his game plan before the Cox Plate, and hopefully he can help you find a few winners. No, thanks so much for having me. Pleasure. He's a star, Kevin Blake, and we're lucky to have him in this country. He's going to be a great ambassador as well, telling the storylines of why racing is so great in this country to all of his friends back home in Ireland and the UK. Gator will be joining me next for his all-important game plan ahead of Cox Plate Day.
Speaker 1Text us on 0499 736 737. Live across Australia, this is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall. On Giddy Up, it's time for Gator's Game Plan with David Gately. And Gator joins us.
Speaker 2Hello to you, Gator.
Speaker 14Hello, mate. We're about to get a wriggle on. It's race one in a minute.
Speaker 2Yeah, I know. I appreciate that. Obviously, we don't, Kevin Blake, he was, he could join us today, but we're going to keep you longer. I know there's a few text messages coming through. This one was probably the best one. He, as I just get it up onto my computer screen, right now. Hey, Garth, love Kevin, but we need Gator on as I block out an hour in my work diary every Thursday between 9.30 and 10.30. And my boss thinks it's for personal development and I'm going to miss the back end of it today. Sorry, Craig from Tamworth. I'll make up for it. Now, Gator, how do you think these tracks will play on Cox Plate Day at Flemington and then, of course, at Randwick there in Sydney?
Speaker 14Yeah, no, it's certainly development. We think that's for sure. Yeah, look, I'm not sure. Well, Flemington, the three different bureaus have three different temperatures and rain predicted. But look, as the odds racing MO went out, rail back true. Obviously, nine metres turnbull, very wet. I thought it played okay. No disadvantage to be up there. Straight race in the middle of the track and beyond. Expecting, you know, nine out of 10 Flemingtons, you get your chance. So, but off, that hard inside rail for the straight races. Randwick's back to six metres. The last time we had a six on pace has had a really, really good day. Track played well last week, three metres. So I'm a bit nervous there.
Speaker 2Yeah. 0499 736 736 to get your questions in on the Garrod's Horse and Hound text line. So many questions already flowing through for you, Gator, because it is a big game plan. We've got Cox Plate Day and obviously the invitation meeting. We'll get to your key categories after our break there just at the top of 10 o'clock because then we can have a good stretch there going through your key categories. The key player, which is your best bet. The toughest race for you to sort out. The D-Day horse is an interesting one this week. The highlight race and of course the night watchman. And Gator, congratulations last week because I had a friend that I accidentally sent your email to and he boxed up your numbers in the course of the week. The Caulfield Cup and he says he'll shout you lunch whenever you want. So the Oz Racing fam, if they did that, they had a wonderful day on Caulfield Cup Day. So God bless you.
Speaker 14Yes. Yeah, I think we put that one on the app as well. The first four in the trifecta of the Cup. So with five picks. It paid $19,000. Do you think I took it myself?
Speaker 2No. No, well my mate did and I don't usually forward your email, but yeah, I had to omit that. Might be a new subscriber. Yes, yes. Time for a break. We'll come back with more next. live on rsn and sen track this is giddy up with
Speaker 1gareth hall and then it's
Speaker 2up to you the selectors to ask our coach skater a question about this weekend's racing all in the bid to try and work out a plan to help you back winners on saturday so gator let's start off with the key player the first athlete that you're picking in your football side this weekend to make you some money so who's your best
Speaker 14bet all righty race eight round week number one lazara so she was beaten in sort of quick time first up and went to 1400 won the gold pendant the the girls she beat uh she actually made some better at the weights here into this the fourth horse was surfing girl who went to corfin and won really well in fast time she's just so well suited to the second level mayor's race so she's competitive at the top end because she tries really hard but she just lacks that touch of class for those a pluses but these second level races are perfect for her um draws out a bit but um and has 59 but as i say relative weight she's in well made her the best so
Speaker 2race eight number one lazara your best of the day on saturday the long division race now it is frustrating and i mentioned this a few times like this horse is there that won't be running and they're still in the market the euphrates won't be there horses like point of law won't be there and there's another one that's raced there on wednesday that won't take his place as well so um so yeah but it's a tough race to work out because there's different form lines everywhere you look in this year's mooney valley gold cup yeah that's
Speaker 14right and um you know i think uh you know stable scratching the horse when they start running is is obviously important but um yeah let's not worry too much about um punters it's a good race so the mini valley cup isn't it like it's a lot of depth to it um obviously got a the international kesla creates a lot of interest given what we saw yesterday at geelong and you got a really exciting horse king pedro can he win this second up at 2500 atherworth very exciting horse probably had excuses last time did he want the euphrates to run better yesterday probably but he's you know in his own right a really exciting galloper so and then a couple of other key hopes draw out so um yeah it's a tough one the uh the mini valley car who did you tip I've gone with king pedro in the back of my mind um is just that that he gets to 2500 pretty quickly he's only 12 weeks between runs yeah a lovely return at wait for age he hit the line really sweetly you know he's beaten all of these in the past or many of these key robbers in the past I think he's he's in Melbourne yeah um but yeah the the uh Asterix is there so he's on top but a few
Speaker 2for the quaddie it's interesting in that race because you've got your tip King Pedro from atherwolf kislyar as Kevin Blake just pointed out from Joseph O'Brien stable they're gonna leave it to the last minute they think he's a better horse fresh he's on the verge of getting into the Melbourne Cup do you take the punt Gator and keep him fresh where you think he'll be at his best for the race that he's here for but if you don't run in the Moonee Valley Gold Cup there's a chance he doesn't make it in so um and it sounds like if he goes around the Moonee Valley Gold Cup he might not be at his best there in the Melbourne Cup so it's a difficult decision to to make so um yeah and then and then you've got Kings Valley I don't see in your numbers there like he was a mighty in a Caulfield Cup
Speaker 14yeah it ran really well no doubt um so he would you know if all of the if for many of these don't run yeah um he certainly you know shuffles right up the batting order doesn't he yeah um D-Day horse uh D-Day let's head to Randwick and the Craven plate and Tom Kitten who I thought he was really good in the Epsom you know given his weight um he uh was not too far off chairwolf who then chased autumn glow he meets some key rivals here up to wait for age significantly better at the weights I'm talking 7.5 kilos and I'm thinking if attrition can run down Linda man then Tom Kitten
Speaker 2can yeah I reckon it is his day Tom kitten so I like the way you're thinking your DNA horse has been on fire of late now we get to the big one the WS Cox plate it is the highlight race and the market is a fascinating Market now for this year's race at Flemington of course and it's still over the 2040 meters so Delius is the favorite 420. so look I think the door is open for the three rods this year um you know
Speaker 14given there isn't an excellent standard they're all really good horses don't get me wrong you know I could have an eighth pick and um you can make probably just as strong a case as your top pick or second pick so I'm going to tip all woven who was so so good winning that the Caulfield guineas and of course the the Golden Rose um you know I don't see 2000 pulling him up should get a good run off a strong speed here um so he a little safer bet on the other three old blind rays and with the older horses um so if if the track is uh you know rain affected so the it looks like three to four PM maybe when the rain hits it's definitely advantage Cosmic Crusader we saw that in the Turnbull he left Sir Delius and aliana behind albeit with a fitness Edge um a dry track advantages the likes of Birdman and those sort of Gallopers so um track condition is going to be key um but I'm happy with the uh the three-year-olds this year and yeah um I think they'll run really well I don't think they're going to Street them but um I think they're going to run really well in the race
Speaker 2so yeah so you're with four woven Cosmic Crusader blind race and Sir Delius and aliana and then charwolf like it is a great race Sir Delius you've got fourth pick in aliana now they're at the top of the market why would you be taking them on a little bit there Gator
Speaker 14yeah no they're winning slopes I just I just need a need a pecking order gonna um and Sir Delius uh look you you wouldn't say he's flying uh this prep but he's going okay um the key to him is third up so the last two times he's third up he's he's a huge spike in his hashtag ratings um so if he repeats that again he can clearly win the last two times he was third up he sailed past versus Dina who won the Cox plate then of course he didn't take his own place um in in near track record time so if he if he Peaks third up again he can obviously win so he goes in everything aliena is a star um so I'm just looking for little tiny things to to you know to have your pecking order have your batting order in in the order it is and I just think she's looking for further you know she's not quickening in her races a strong speed will help um but I'm and and you know but it didn't really help her in the Turnbull as much as I thought it would all be it on a wet track so she's fifth pick but again in the
Speaker 2quad I've got a question for you Gator and legend and a lot of infantry man Kira Mark could train you to win I reckon the way that he's going at the moment you could turn up to a wire to win that that higher man race like against um all age groups and be the world champ the way that Kieran's training at the moment like a lot of inventory man has broke the track record to the he still I know that it was her first go at 2 000 meters but he still beat she's alibi who would be what price in this year's Cox played if she went down that path you're getting 41 and light infantry man um Cosmic Crusader was the only horse that got past him the other day in a Turnbull he's at 29 like I don't reckon they'll be stopping there on Saturday
Speaker 14no it's a good case you made um you know I think that she's an alibi um form or in sequence is really relevant especially after Kingswood was right there and just won a cool field cup off a wide run um so somewhat potting that race even though they break the track record and I can't keep up with the ratings I'm gonna say gurus but anyway um just just watch the race now he's um so look they can both win because there's your case exactly that lightning vision man just beat home a Liana and so Delia's um and he I think the perfect scenario for him is tracking the hot speed yes and that's that may well be what happens so um good case you know I think Kieran obviously a phenomenal trainer but he couldn't find an hour and a half for me at Hawaii
Speaker 2no I reckon he might I tell you I reckon he might um um and then too darn discreet is the night Watchman and that's it yeah look
Speaker 14yeah she's flying if it was set weight she'd be the better the day but obviously she's got 60 um and the up-and-comer Sovrato six kilos less so I'm scared of her but two down discreet's flying um she's three for three at the trip I gave her hope in the tour it turns out it was just a bit slick for her 1600 staying there um I think she's come back enormous wide second up huge first But so she's top pick, race nine of mine. She's really backable too. But I'll have some insurance home quality-wise if we're alive.
Speaker 2Coach, do you think we should give your parlay out now or wait to the end of the show after we go through all the questions? We can roll now and then repeat later.
Speaker 14All right, then.
Speaker 2All right, then. You're the boss.
Speaker 14All right, then. Well, you just made that up, race. Race six, number two, Tom Kitten. Yes. Race eight, number one, Lazura. Race ten, number one, Estadio Mestalla. Obviously, Sin City.
Speaker 2Yep. So that's race six, number two, Tommy Boy. Lazura race eight, number one, The Invitation. And Estadio Mestalla race ten, number one. And do you know what I'm going to do? I'm going to give Gator like half an hour to try and pick out his Cox Plate parlay. Because I know those text messages will start to fly through. Has he got one at Flemington? Don't go anywhere. That was going through the key categories with Gator for his game plan ahead of Cox Plate Day and the meeting at Randwick. On the other side of it, it's up to you to ask your question to Gator on 0-4-double-9-7-3-6-7-3-6. That's on the Garret's Horse and Hound text line, 0-4-double-9-7-3-6-7-3-6. So your question's next. Could I mute you, Gator? Was I muted? Yeah. That's a setback. I wish we could see you because of, obviously, restrictions. We can't, but that's understandable. I love the picture that we've got of you on our screens at racing.com.
Speaker 14What is it, Beaker? What is it?
Speaker 2No, it's, I don't know. It must be one of those Flemington preview photo shoots that you had for Channel 9 or Channel 10.
Speaker 14Yeah, I just had a look. It's quite a nice suit, that one.
Speaker 2Yeah, it is, actually. Price is right. So, yeah, Juju Cabot could have been very competitive at a Caulfield Cup as an emergency fourth upper for three weeks. Should settle on speed relatively easy from the wide draw. Do you agree with bar plates?
Speaker 14Yeah, look, it depends who's in the field. But, obviously, the more scratchings not only takes the depth away from it, but makes his job a bit easier to get across. And, you know, it's brought many an athlete undone, though. Barrier 500. Yes.
Speaker 2Hey, Gator, I think Ray McNearo is over and can win. This is the McEwen. Your thoughts there from Winkers?
Speaker 14Yeah, no, he's a winning player. He's a winning hope for sure. Obviously, no luck first up. He tried super leading into that. And he gave Jigsaw a really big scare when they clashed in the quokka. So, there's not a lot between them. Probably, what was that, 8.4 of a length? Yeah. So, that makes him a winning hope for sure.
Speaker 2It's an interesting one, that McEwen, because Extra Galactic's the favourite at 270. First go down the straight. Cindy Oleson doesn't know if Jigsaw likes the straight or not. He's $3. Now, there's a strong argument to say he should have won there the other day. He's at $7. And then Ray McNearo at $9. Didn't have any luck first up. Marzouz at $10. And then Splashback at $12. Arkansas Kid at $16. Lafrakas at $70. So, it's a fascinating race this year, the McEwen stakes down the straight.
Speaker 14Yeah, it is that. I think Extra Galactic, I think the straight will really suit her. Jigsaw's been there. He wasn't the same horse, though. Yeah. So, I don't think that's fair. But it is still a box that needs to be ticked. Smooch, you know, you're right. It was terrific first up. Just missed Skybird. Skybird went to Sydney in the Premier and arguably should have won it. Yeah. You know, it was luckless. So, case made there. Look, I'm tipping Extra Galactic, but, you know, there's no way she'll be solo in that early quarter.
Speaker 2Yeah. So, yeah, Extra Galactic, Jigsaw, Ray McNearo, Marzouz, and Splashback in that race. I can't see Smoochino's name there, Gator.
Speaker 14Yeah, no. You can make a case for sure. I just went back and looked at the quokka. Jigsaw and Ray McNearo were simply better than him. So, I think they're probably, that's the conclusion I drew.
Speaker 2Morning, Gareth. Cosmic Crusader ran in the Caulfield Cup last week and is backing up in the Cox Plate this week. With a heavy racing schedule stretching all the way back to August, is fatigue going to catch up to him? That's a question.
Speaker 14Well, no athlete stays up forever, but the, you know, what trainers, the competitors' job is to identify the strengths and weaknesses of their athlete and get the best out of them. And he seems to thrive on racing. He's more a Jamaica type, I think, than a Winx. Winx had, what, four run preparations, maybe five. So, you know, sort of more brilliant, lightly framed. But he seems more in the Jamaica mould that just thrives on racing, even northerly. You know, those sort of tough endurance gallopers that thrive on the contest. Yeah. And training.
Speaker 2There was a question there that I saw, but I've just lost it. True. While we're on this topic, the great late Dean Lester always said, the best lead up to a Cox Plate is horses coming out of the Caulfield Cup. So, it could be the right move from Bob for a Cox Plate to go to the Caulfield Cup and dropping back. And I guess St. George comes under that conversation as well.
Speaker 14Yeah, look, it's a tried and true formula, but it depends on the athlete. So, it's no good just having a set formula. And, you know, I think Chris Waller, for example, as good as any trainer in the history of the sport. So, he won the oars at the Epson with a horse coming back from 2,000 metres. Yeah. That obviously really suited that horse. Then he tried it the next four years and they all didn't quicken. So, it just depends on the athlete.
Speaker 2Hey, G, can you ask Gator Dog about all the mystery money for him last start when he made that long run at Caulfield? His run was huge at Flemington the start before. I think he's going, I'm sneakingly good. This horse, that's from Mitch from Bathurst.
Speaker 14No, I agree. The horse is going well. Whether or not this is a little bit hot remains to be seen. But the horse is going well for the right race.
Speaker 2Your thoughts, Gator, on Angel's Fury? It was very impressive in her first prep and has trialled like a jet leading into her first up run. Should be $3.50 or less, in my opinion. Kieran was leading towards maybe Cranbourne over Flemington, but he was still undecided, Gator.
Speaker 14Yeah, I did hear that. So, just let me know. Just let me know when you know. Yeah, the trial, you wouldn't have been put off by the trial. She was brilliant. She sat back, hooked out, and just zoomed past them. It was great work. Interestingly, the maiden win was pretty soft. She beat a horse called Portnari. Egyptian Dancer was sort of some six lengths away. And that's the horse that chased Aroused, who's in the market. So, they can be tied in, these two.
Speaker 2Hey, G, boys. Chocolate's no intent last start with the blinkers off. Looked like a fitness run for the Cup. Blinker's back on here. Does Gator give her any chance? It's a slightly strange set-up. Yeah, back to the 1600.
Speaker 14Yeah, nah, it's not the right race for her, but she's airborne. She'll just tick over beautifully into the great race. And she's a live top ten hope for sure.
Speaker 2It was interesting talking to Kieran this morning. Like, his best Melbourne Cup chance all along, he said Middle Earth. And he mentioned Chocolate's over point of law. Do you think it was an overreaction from the market? I have him favourite after winning yesterday's Geelong Cup.
Speaker 14Point of law? Well, I mean, he looked great. He absorbed pressure. He ran time. I know on paces dominated the card, but they had a great cover of grass. That was good. But, yeah, look, he was terrific at start five. So, look, if I'm framing a market, he's right at the top of it on what I saw. We know that race, when they rate well coming out of that race, we know they run well. And in Melbourne Cup, as a rule.
Speaker 2But as Kevin Blake pointed out, they were the second stringers of Joseph O'Brien's army. The good ones were waiting back at Werribee.
Speaker 14Yeah, everyone's got a better one at home. But they haven't shown it yet, and he has.
Speaker 2Morning, G-Man and Gatorade. Thoughts on Lazura, which is your best bet? And Extra Galactic. He likes them both, Liam. So, he's answered those questions for you. Gatorade, how's he going? Do we need better odds to find out? Yesterday, I backed Everard. Gatorade, hashtag Everpain.
Speaker 14Yes. Yeah, she was luckless. I just wondered if 1,200 might be a bit sharp for her first up. But, you know, you can argue strongly she should have won that. So, she's come back well. So, Delius, look, what you're banking on, as I said earlier, is his third up profile. That's what you're betting on. If he runs like he did last time, he can't win. You know, because Cosmic Crusader left him for dead. Light Infantryman didn't come back to him. But, if he improves and spikes like he has the last two third up runs, yes, he can absolutely win.
Speaker 2I reckon he's like a veteran in your footy side these days, Sir Delius. He's been a multiple best and fairest winner for you. A great servant of your footy club. But, he's getting a little older. I don't know if he's going as hard as that football since he's had it, you know, as he used to. And, whether he's got that appetite to, you know, go and dig deep when you're wanting to.
Speaker 14It's a fair point. And, I'll tell you straight after the race.
Speaker 2Yes. Yes. If only he could have a chat to us. I, Gareth, would love to get your thoughts on Wonka in the Spring Championship at Group 1. Or, Gator's thoughts at Round Week this Saturday. He did beat Genesis Runner.
Speaker 14No, he did. Yeah. And, they all crossed the line together. So, all those coming through the lead-up race. So, I guess they all have a case. There were five of them, weren't there, across the track. So, that's why I went with Global Goal, who doesn't come through the blanket finish race.
Speaker 2Mm-hmm you've got global gold, proximate debt. Dia for second, Diamond a third, Stormy, Marco and Scorolli there. In your numbers for the spring champion, which is a group one level for the three-year-olds. Hi, Gareth. I was interested in watching the start of the Everest. David Hayes has always said that Cain Rising was always the last horse to load yet in the Everest, he wasn't. Maybe that may have caused him to jump out a blitz slower. That's from Carmine. That could be the case. I don't know. Gator, you have any thoughts on that?
Speaker 14No, no. I thought he jumped well and, yeah, ran really well. It just wasn't in front at the end.
Speaker 2Raph, this is a good question. Morning, guys. What constitutes a great ride? Last weekend, we saw Kingswood sit four wide without cover, yet he wins the Caulfield Cup and you're all hailing it as a great ride. Yet Cain Rising did seem like it's beaten a nose and you're all bagging Zach Purton. My point is not all winning rides are good rides and not all losing rides
Speaker 14are bad. 100,000 million percent. Yeah. I don't know. I don't know how every single ride that ever wins, the first thing your expert says, oh, great ride. So anyway, I'm trying to steer away from that on Sky and praising the jockey, you know, when tactically they really do get it right rather than, you know, so in fairness to Kingswood, he drew a barrier 20, didn't he? So probably given the gate, you know, it wasn't a bad ride. He was probably lucky, he was definitely lucky when they took off mid-race and he got a trail second half, but great win.
Speaker 2Terrific win. I guess that that ride there from Johnny Allen is that he didn't panic and he let that horse continue in his rhythm. And he made a decision to do just that. He preferred to do that than be out the back.
Speaker 14So, yeah. And saved him for one run, you know, like there were plenty making two or three runs and, you know, there's plenty out there that think that's a good idea. Historically, you're less likely to win.
Speaker 2And I think it is underrated a little bit when you've got a jockey, outside the leader, three wide without cover, if they can rate their horse and rate it to perform when they want them to go, if you know what I mean, Gator. I think that's hard how quick you're going.
Speaker 14Yep. And every athlete's different. You saw Antino take off in a truck and win by six. Now, for 90 of 100 other athletes, that wouldn't work.
Speaker 2No. Yep. If a woman is a $4 favour for the Cox Plate, surely blind raises good value at $15, Gator.
Speaker 14Yep. No, I agree. Look, I think their runs were equal, had equal merit. I love to blind raise his effort. Yeah, it was leader, it's sure, but he absorbed pressure, he still kicked. And it was only the last 125 metres that were woven, got the upper hand. So, I don't think there's much between them. They thrashed everything else. They're in good time relative to older horses. I think they both run really well.
Speaker 2All right, then we're going to take a break. We'll continue on with your questions next for Gator's Game Plan. This is Gator's Game Plan. 049-736-736 to join our conversation on the Gareth's Horse & Hound text line. Morning, Gary and Gator. A lot of experts saying Jigsaw should be favoured. I think Extra Galactic looks perfectly set for this and will love the straight and drawn out. She would definitely be favoured, in my opinion. We've talked about that wigger, and guess what? You're right. She is. She's now the favourite with Bet365. With a genuine slash fast tempo, does Middle Earth have a chance, or is this just a lead up to the Melbourne Cup, Gator, in your eyes?
Speaker 14Yeah, I liked his run in the Caulfield Cup, certainly from a 30-200 metre perspective. So, I think that's the race where he runs really well.
Speaker 2Do you think that Barracks has a chance on Saturday? I think he's a serious horse gator.
Speaker 14Yeah, top pick, and actually made him the best for the day. I really struggled a bit for a standout, because I'm scared. He was a bit stiff of half pipe. He was every bit as good as him last week, especially against the pattern. But Barracks absorbed pressure, shot through, and was only beaten on the line. I thought the run was terrific. He gets a softer run here. So, Barracks, race two, number four, top pick.
Speaker 2And the Keora stud mile over the 1,600 metres, one of our listeners wants to ask you, Gator, is Surf and Bird too short? She's 250 against also like Buckaroo, Evaporate, Another Wheel, Von Hawke for Ocha. She is, yeah. She is tight.
Speaker 14It's funny. I do the form before looking at a market, and I came back to her, and I thought, oh, this might be even a little value play. She might be five or six bucks. Whoops. But look, she was terrific winning at Caulfield. Yes, pattern helped, but she won well strong, time good, relative to the group one on the day. And that's where a lot of the key rivals come out of. So, I can see what they're thinking. I'm going to have a safer bet on Pondolao, who's somehow 25 to one. Yes. And a few for that early, according for the quad, six, seven, eight, nine, yep, first league. The wet track's really important, though, for on display and Another Wheel. Yeah. I think they want it drier.
Speaker 2Yeah, so you were Surf and Bird, Pondolao, you had a prize Von Hawken on display. So, with the Oz Racing fam, if you got the Bible from Gator, you'd probably look at that and back Pondolao, to tell you the truth. Well, you can back them both or play some
Speaker 14exotics and make some money that way, hopefully,
Speaker 2yeah. Yeah. Frank agrees with you. I'm all over Warwoven and Cosmic Crusader. Can Gator find a chink in Cosmic Crusader's armour? That's from Frank.
Speaker 14Yeah, so, I mean, he never runs poorly, so he's not going to do that. But he doesn't win every time he runs either. You know, and Birdman did sail past him on a dry track. Then the Turnbull in wet, excellent. Caulfield Cup rock solid with his 56. So, good strong case. He's sure to run well without being immoral.
Speaker 2Shout out to the producer, Louie. He just passed me. G'day, Louie. I was big on Sulek in the last, the Geelong yesterday also. His run club teammate is hot. There you go. I don't know what that's called. Oh, boy. Maybe Louie can come and explain that. It's from one of your mates. 571 is his number. Hi, Gator. Von Hawke is a favourite of yours. What's your thoughts on Saturday? Can he win a weaker race? That's from Brad.
Speaker 14Yeah, well, he won this last year with 57. So, I don't think he's poorly weighted. I thought he was running the. Both runs back in strong group ones have been really good. He's absolutely, you know, a winning hope and third pick.
Speaker 2Gator, usually we see a horse come out of the spring champion as a strong or flashing light run to be one of the favourites in the Derby. Who do you think that could be this year? That's from Stuart.
Speaker 14Yeah, I'm not sure. Because, again, referencing they all crossed the line together, didn't they? In the lead-up. And a filly beat them. Prox and Medea. So, the filly. I got the fillies one too this year. But I think all of those. Boys, Stormy Marco, Diameter, Scorolli, you know, Wonka. If they continue to head that way, subject to what happened Saturday, I'd have them strongly in the conversation for the Derby Saturday week.
Speaker 2Thoughts on Strictly Business in the Moonee Valley Cup? Have a 100-1 Melbourne Cup ticket. Really hoping that is her grand final and she's as good as Brisbane, the Brisbane Lions. That's from Lynchy.
Speaker 14Yeah, look, I wish her well. I liked her as a younger. I think a 100-1 is probably fair, though, now.
Speaker 2Valiant King, the place slash top five in race seven. Good bet from Barrier 3. That's from Billy.
Speaker 14Yeah, he's good enough. We know that. You know, it's that sort of race that may well open right up once we know who's running.
Speaker 2Is it time to start to see other people instead of the very frustrating Enzudo? That's from Duke.
Speaker 14Look, he was pretty good last time, I thought. His first at-run was a ripper. And then. Just that race shape. You know, two tracks where you're up and in. Anyway, slow learner me.
Speaker 2Another ACK punting tragic here, Gareth. Well, God bless you, Rob. ACK, you've got a lot to answer for for us punters. Thoughts on Berman back at Flemington. Of course, Assumption College, ACK. This has been his grand final. The three-year-olds are often after thoughts. And Sir Dilley is just not going as well. Is he overs? And Eliana's the big danger. So, Rob, thinking that Chris Waller will be hard to beat in the Cox Plate.
Speaker 14Yeah, I think it's dry the better for Birdman. Yeah. So, when he ran past, Cosmic Crusader were up to a good three. And then they scratched from the Turnbull wet track. He was rock solid, wasn't he, in that fast track record. Underwood crossed the line with Kingswood. She's an alibi.
Speaker 2Case made. Roy LaCourte in the Kirkham Plate. I like his trials. What do you think? That's from Steve. And that's that first race in Sydney on Saturday.
Speaker 14Yeah, lovely trials. No doubt. He quickens nicely. Won the first trial really well. And then joined key rival, Macho, in the latest. And got the upper hand. Wasn't overly exerted either. So, nice work at the trials.
Speaker 2Hi, Gareth. I see Gators Lucero as his best. Superspeakers in each way chance at 41s, I reckon. As it was very unlucky first up at Rose Hill. And it's still looking. For clean air. That's from Paul.
Speaker 14Yeah, it was certainly a figure-file runner. And you'd think it'd be fitter as well. So, you can make a case at a price. I was sort of looking for that horse in something a fraction easier. But, yeah, not out of it.
Speaker 2Just going to have almost an angel in his numbers. Was huge behind Sir Quinn last start. Thought that horse would probably start favourite here. That's Flemington Race 4.
Speaker 14Yeah, it was a good finale. Crossed the line with Jacaranda. And drawn to swoop out wider. Look, I think. - I think he's gonna run better than a 25 to one pop, that's for sure.
Speaker 2So, hi, Jane Gate. I backed Sakuma months ago for the Melbourne Cup. How do you think he's going? Yeah, he's going okay.
Speaker 14I don't think he's airborne. You know, I gave him a good hype in the Herbert Power. Others were better, but he ran quite well. He wanted to run in late, which I didn't love. So, yeah, that's where he's at, I think.
Speaker 2In that Kia or Stud Mile race, is Asheville Flame second up? Got a chance? Steve wants to know.
Speaker 14Yeah, certainly if we give her one last time, did a pair of work. There was
Speaker 2money for her, too,
Speaker 14off a good trial. So, gee, she'd love an on-pace track.
Speaker 2Geez, leave me alone, everyone. Like, they just continue to give it to me, Gator, about Central Europe. I'll ask Gator about Central Europe. I don't know if he's tipping it. I couldn't back him. He's like, I'm seeing other people. What about you, Gator?
Speaker 14Well, I would have made him the D-Day horse, but unfortunately that was a few moons back. Look, it is a good race for him, back to the 1600, back a notching grade. He was certainly sound in that fast guineas, and if you're giving a couple of those a cocksplate hope, then it's easy to make a strong case for him. Are you tipping? You are tipping him on top, Gator. Tipped him on top. Yes. Very nearly went with, I'm along at the better price, but can only have one on top.
Speaker 2Yeah, why so hard in for third? Central Europe, you're on top selection, and the calendar, Fresnel. I reckon there'll be a race in 20 years' time called the Gately. As the great Gator refuses to do the shirtless walk and talk, can we request a Gator motion with the arms over the weekend if you get the best home on Sky that's from Oscar?
Speaker 14No, I think that can happen. Yeah. I think that's a lay down in that one.
Speaker 2Wasn't Cosmic Crusade entitled to finish in front of Kingswood, given Kingswood had a much tougher run and had to work more? Is it fair to question? All the form out of the Caulfield Cup? That's from David.
Speaker 14Well, I mean, the form, if you look at those two horses, so Kingswood's just been on the heels of She's an Alibi and Birdman, and Cosmic Crusade has just won a Turnbull leading into that. So, you know, they've both run enormous. Third was an international with form around, you know, opportunity, those sort of really good horses, and splitting those was St George, who's been flying. So I think they're all in really good form, but I take the point.
Speaker 2P.S. Kieran would need to find you an extra two and a half hours at the Hawaiian Ironman. That's from David. Come on. They're not running sevens. Do you think Concord Connie is a chance in the Empire Rose, or would you aim lower? I reckon they might go to that Derby race on the other, the Carbine.
Speaker 14She's four, isn't she? She can't go to the Carbine.
Speaker 2Oh, yes. There's another race there.
Speaker 14Sorry. Yeah. Yeah. So. I think she's extremely ready to win. But how does she get into a TAB Empire Rose now? I don't know. She's rating. I don't know if she gets in.
Speaker 2Is McGaw Rovers in race one?
Speaker 14Look, he's, let's call him frustrating. Yes. Yeah. If he runs to that day, he beat, what did he beat? Mike Gladiola, whoever he beat.
Speaker 2Yeah, Ted Tyrus and Mike Gladiola.
Speaker 14Yeah, it's a good scalp, isn't it?
Speaker 2That's a miracle that was that day. It's a minor miracle.
Speaker 14Yeah. It's sort of Milson's point area. Yeah. Please explain that.
Speaker 2Bill wants to know about Stoke and Race One. Could be Jet Stanley special.
Speaker 14Yeah. Well, look, they probably overcooked it a bit last time. Not many good enough to run along at that speed and hold on. But so perhaps a more conservative ride gives her up. She's 40 to one. So, you know, perhaps a good roughy there.
Speaker 2Yeah. The Damien Oller over the 1400 for Connie. Connie. Yeah. What about your parlay in Melbourne Gator?
Speaker 14All right. We're going to go with race two, number four, Barracks. Yes. Into race four, number 11, Aroused. Sort of topical. Into race nine, number one, too darn discreet.
Speaker 2Race nine, number one. Yeah, you don't want to be too darn discreet when you're. Anyway, race four, number 11. Into race nine, number one. Now, we'll just recap your. I've just lost my train of thought for some reason. I don't know why. Your parlay for Sydney's race six, number two, Tom Kitt, and race eight, number one, Luzura, and race 10, number one, Estadio Mostella. Eliana is unlikely to go to the Melbourne Cup. I don't think it's been completely ruled out. There's a few questions coming through there regarding Eliana. You would love to see her in a Melbourne Cup Gator, but I don't think that is the plan.
Speaker 14Yeah, look, I think it's probably not the ideal prep. There's another 2,000 metre run into 3,200, but. Look, I just think she's looking for further. You know, I do think the Caulfield Cup was a missed opportunity, but who am I to second guess?
Speaker 2Do you give hierarchy a chance in the Vars Gator, or are you a true rebel?
Speaker 14Yeah, no, I do think the horse is a chance. You know, he didn't quicken in time there at Geelong, but was really strong through the line. Was actually in front of them 100 metres past the line, which I like to see. You'd have to say true rebel was the better run, though. So, hence, I've got him second pick and hierarchy four pick.
Speaker 2Liam wants to know, is Cheyenne overrated?
Speaker 14Let's find out on Saturday. I think it's D-Day for her as well. She's had excuses both runs back and run well, I think, given the race shapes she's contested.
Speaker 2Yeah. What about Pinhole in the Moonee Valley Gold Cup?
Speaker 14Yeah, well, it depends who's there, right? But I loved the chase. I loved the win in the Herbert Power. He has that King Pedro form from last prep. Now, King Pedro was better than him, you know, hence, I tipped that horse here. But Pinhole's match fit, flying, and he's got a will to win. I like him.
Speaker 2Well, Gator, you've done it brilliantly once again. Sensational stuff. I've thoroughly enjoyed the game plan and bring on Saturday, mate. We'll catch up with you on Monday, but we can listen to you on RSN with Mark Hunter and Travis Noonan for the big form panel ahead of Cox Plate Day. Hopefully, there's no big scratching like that day Zaki came out. Well, Dino was distraught. He was, wasn't he? He was. It was a shame. Yeah, I couldn't believe it when I read. I think I was on that day as well. I couldn't believe when I read it out, the scratching. My phone went off. And then, yeah, you had to say it to believe it.
Speaker 1Live across Australia, this is Gideon with Gareth Hall. Trial Time with Matty Morton.
Speaker 2Matty Morton joins us for Trial Time. Hello to you, Matty boy. Good morning, Gareth. Good morning, listeners. We'll come back with plenty more. Let's get you up on this Thursday morning. Oh, well done there, Matty. I tell you what, rub it in. Like, knock a man while he's down. Unbelievable. What about you could have told us before the race. Anyway, top five trialers this week. We'll start off. There's a horse that hasn't got a name, which is always interesting. He's your number five trialer.
Speaker 15Yes, number five trialer this week. Patience has always been a well-rewarded virtue for Envy Yusufovich and his stable. And he has another very interesting, unreached four-year-old by Hans Yatik out of Superflare. This fellow doesn't have a name yet, but that should be rectified very soon, I think. Plenty of size and shape, so he's no surprise. I haven't seen him trial, jump out or race prior to the last two weeks. First time out, he jumped well, led near the rail throughout, under a solid hold throughout. Didn't beat much, but it was a very strong debut. On Monday, the son of Hans Yatik jumped well again from the outside gate. Remained nine wide on the turn. Give it a nudge at the 200 as Lockie Neindorf pulled his whip through the left hand and continued strongly through the line to score easily. I don't think he's beaten much so far, but this fellow looks to be better than Maiden Grade. And he did run good time on Monday. So, we'll be watching out for him.
Speaker 2Who's number four? One for Gay Waterhouse and Adrian Bott. Harry Lyme is the number four trialler for you this week.
Speaker 15Yeah, Harry Lyme arrived from Sydney with an unbeaten record. And he sold defeat at Flemington. Can definitely be excused. He was taken back from a wide draw and a lead at Dominated Contest. Excellent late and through the line. On Friday, he was straight to the front in the typical Waterhouse Bott fashion. And that was all the other saw of him. Went out to a strong lead. Went for Mr. Brightside and maintained that throughout. Was given an easy time late, but was not ever asked for his full effort. So, look out for Harry over Cup Week. Possibly that 1,400 metre three-year-old race will suit ideally.
Speaker 2Number three is Kakako for Lloyd Cannawell.
Speaker 15Yeah, handy man Kakako has always been good when fresh. And she's returned this week in the sort of form required to continue that pattern. She had a couple of jumps a month ago before being rested briefly. And while they were okay, Kakako looked in much better form this week. Was happy to sit wide on the speed early and turned about six to seven off the fence under a good hold. Moved strongly through the line without being let down. And although second to Hanky Alfa, the mare was shown the persuader and asked to do a lot more to win narrowly. So, I think she was more convincing than Hanky Alfa on the line. And that horse, as we know, debuted very strongly. at Flemington recently.
Speaker 2Number two is Aston. Oh, sorry, mate.
Speaker 15Yep, you're right, Kakako remains a very winnable mark of 71, and her jump out was over a link quicker than Hedgdon and Mbube in heat one,
Speaker 2so it's worth noting. So that's Kakako, K-O-K-A-K-O. Aston is number two, A-S-T-O-N, for Andrew Knoblet.
Speaker 15Yeah, three-start mate, and Aston could easily have broken his start by now with a little luck from unfavorable draws at every outing so far. He certainly displayed enough talent to progress well through the grades this time in. Only his first jump out on Friday, but he went to the lead and stayed there throughout, was challenged slightly in the straight, but powered away in what was an impressive performance. Aston will take a power beating in a maiden first up, and might even appear in midweek in town soon. Either way, keep a close eye out for him.
Speaker 2And number one is Cheyenne for the Archibalds, who of course goes around on Saturday at Flemington.
Speaker 15Yes, and I heard Gage's comments regarding this mare. Cheyenne, she hasn't enjoyed the best of luck with draws and race patterns this time in. Caught wide throughout first up and taken back again in a lead to domination on speed day next time out. Jumped well on Friday, was happy to take a sip before sliding up the inside of the straight and winning with plenty in hand. Strong through the line and never close to extended throughout. Cheyenne's one out of one third up, and provided she gets a good start, and gets the right draw on Saturday, which she has. She'll take a power beating in the Crockett, and hopefully she turns up there, and Angel's Fury turns up on Friday, and we can have a little double.
Speaker 2All right, there you go. What about the horses that we need to be backing from your black book?
Speaker 15Well, that's the. The double. outline just then, so. We'll get on that double if that's how it turns out. Otherwise, we've got to get on the Quinella on Saturday.
Speaker 2All right, then who's your tip in the Melbourne Cup at the moment?
Speaker 15I'm. pretty happy with the way. that horse went the other day, but I'm still with Joseph O'Brien, one way or the other.
Speaker 2Yeah, all right, then.
Speaker 15I'll make my decision at the call of the card.
Speaker 2All right, then. Good on you, Matty. Thanks for that. Okay, cheers. There's Matty Morton, 10.49, time for a break. Bag of tips next.
Speaker 1The Giddy Up Bag of Tips for Oz Equipment Rentals. Supplying equipment to the construction, mining and roadworks industries.
Speaker 2ozequipment.com Time now to find you some winners today across the three codes. Thanks to Bet365, Oz Equipment Rentals and the Older My Hotel. I think Shane Bennett from the Older My Hotel and Oz Equipment Rentals became a. He went viral yesterday. Shane Bennett, I don't know, he was debating or yelling at the protesters. He headed into Geelong Cup Day. Our Bet365 boost horse today, Pauli Sebastiani, comes up in race number four. You've gone cold, haven't you, a little bit?
Speaker 16This week has not been good, so we've handed the reins to Louie.
Speaker 2Yeah, you put. Oh, Louie. There you go.
Speaker 16Regal Harry. Trialled up very, very nicely. Stranglehold in the trials. And it's actually accepted and nominated for a pretty decent race on Saturday, but it looks like they're going to stay local and race today.
Speaker 2Good on you, Louie. Regal Harry race. Four number 10. Thank you, Paul. Thank you. Benny Ascari, thanks to Racing.com, likes race six number nine, Lope Delado, and race five number nine, Late Night Wonder. And his quaddie numbers, four, five, nine, 10, 11, first leg, four, nine, 10, second leg, three, nine, 10, third leg, and then he comes home with a four, six, seven, and nine at Mornington today. Luke Ovenessian, he likes two at Gosford. Hidden News, race two, number seven, and race three, number one, Lion Eyes. Michael Heaton at Geraldton today. And Western Australia likes race six, number three, Catch Carter. And also Ken Oliver, race seven, number one. So six, three, seven, one. Darren Carroll at Kilmore tonight. Mallican, race five, number six, and race eight, number six, Dakota. So five, six, eight, six. Harness Racing, New South Wales. The home of the Carnival of Cups, where Australian music royalty meets quality harness racing action. At Penrith today, Amanda Rando likes race three, number nine, Nothing But Waves, and Ravishing Sloth. Sloy, race four, number nine. Georgie Ferugia at Sandown likes race three, number two, Derry. Race four, number six, Electrify. That is some night of chasing action from Sandown tonight. And at Parklands, he likes race one, number one, Sergeant, and race seven, number six, Beautiful Child. After Beautiful Child competed, of course, in the Sydney Cup last Friday night. Check out racingqueensland.com.au for where Queensland is racing today. Mitchie Abay joins us. Take it away, Mitchie, as I say hello to you.
Speaker 17Morning, Jim. Morning, man. Good to be with you, mate. Cracking day in Melbourne. Hopefully, we can find a few winners up in Queensland. It's going to be pretty wet.
Speaker 2All right there, mate. Where do we start with your plays?
Speaker 17Yep, we're going to go to race four on the program. Race four, number six, Zipping Urban. Around $5. Dogs drawn, really nice. Gets a wide runner in seven. Great record at the track. 12 starts, seven wins, three minor placings. I'm all aboard it. That's race four, number six, Zipping Urban. Rollover to a dog that's got its first start at the track. Race five, number one, Axles Run. In flying form, seven starts, five wins, two minor placings. Great record off inside draws. Grafton times have been a blaze. So, race five, number one, Axles Run. I had a value play come up in race number eight. I'm happy to try and take on this Aston Missile. Geez, it was fast and a teat. Back Creek Butch, I was with it last week. It cost us. Now, it maps beautifully tonight. So, race eight, number seven. You were getting about $1.80 on the place last night when I looked, but that's been chomped up. It's into about $1.60 to place and five bucks to win so race eight, number seven, Back Creek Butch was my value play of the night. So, they were the three I had for you, G-Man, and hopefully we can get a collect. We had a good day at the Q-State last week.
Speaker 2You're on tonight, is that right?
Speaker 17I am on tonight, yeah. I'm back on with C. Smith, I believe.
Speaker 2So, Corey Smith, he's going to announce the top-carned field, I think, for us next week. So, looking forward to that. Andy, when is it Sandown? Is it your liking, I think?
Speaker 17Sandown Park, I thought the meeting was okay. Distance race is there to look at. I wasn't. Look, I thought race two, number one, Corbin Yaxley was going to be really hard to beat off an inside draw. Maxwell, wide runner in two, I thought it was going to be really hard to beat. So, race two, number one. And then the distance race, if race three, number two, Derry, if it doesn't win tonight when it gets everything going its way, I don't know if it'll win one for a while. So, there, the two plays, race two, number one, race three, number two.
Speaker 2And I highly recommend, if you want anyone to mow your lawns or do some whippersnapping or some pruning, get Mitchie Bay to do it for you. Plus, he'll give you tips at the dog. So, basically, you get him for free. Exactly right. I'm going to book you in now since I've moved. I've mowed lawns for 20 years. So, I might need your help. They'll be taller than me then. The lawns will be taller than me. Yes, yes, 100%.
Speaker 17Good on you. No, I'm more than happy to help you out, mate. Come there and I can chew your ear off, give you a few tips, and we'll back a few winners. All right, love it.
Speaker 2That'd be great fun. Beautiful. Doing the gardening with Mitchie Bay and just punning. Imagine. Yeah, how good would that be? Good on you, brother. It'd be brilliant.
Speaker 17Cheers, mate. Everyone tune in tonight, 6 till 10 p.m. SEM track. Lyd Sly, Corey Smith, and myself will try and tip up a storm.
Speaker 2Giddy up. Thanks for that, Mitchie. And with Bet365, they're paying an extra 10% of your winnings on all tote bets on all Australian thoroughbred meetings. This is on Saturday. I know this is every day. That's win, place, quenelles, exactors, trifectas, first, fours, and quarters. So, they're paying an extra 10% of your winnings on all tote bets on all Australian thoroughbred meetings. This is Giddy Up, all thanks to Bet365. We've got a busy final hour coming your way. It's been a big show so far. The Thursday Forum Lounge, we'll head out to New Zealand. Looking forward to that. To catch up with Jesse Gower as well. So, it's a big final hour coming up next here on Giddy Up. Big final hour coming up here on Giddy Up. We'll have our Thursday Forum Lounge, Giddy Up Stable Mail for the WA meeting. Jess Gower will join us and our special guest there with Jess is Eon Kemp from Kilgrave and Lodge there in New Zealand. So, looking forward to catching up with both Eon and Jess. And John Kelton, we've got Tassie time towards the back end of the show. But John Kelton kicks off our final hour thanks to Racing SA with his best at Morfaville. And guess what? The biggest attraction there at Morfaville on Saturday, they tell me. Uncle Wayne. Wayne's heading to Morfaville on Saturday afternoon. How are you, Johnny? You better make sure that the canteen's prepared.
Speaker 4Yeah, I'm well, thanks, Gareth. Yeah, it looks like a good meeting. Again, we're on the main. track at Morfaville, but the weather is going to have a big say. We've got warm conditions leading in, but there's some storm activity and we've got something like 5 to 20 mils coming on Saturday. So, exactly when that hits in the afternoon is going to be critical. I'm leaning to the track, staying in the good range at least for most of the meeting. The main band, the thundery band, will come through later afternoon. So, I'm hoping we can get through most of the meeting first.
Speaker 2Beautiful, mate. How many winners have you got for us? Where do we start? start with your best because Louis Clifton was telling me the other the day um he was with a group of his mates at the pub and the only reason that they listened to giddy up is for your parlay that you give out johnny so there you go you got fans everywhere at the airport no pressure yeah no pressure at all where do we start with your place
Speaker 4uh one of the highlight races of the day is race eight it's a benchmark 84 and there's some pretty handy horses in this race one of the most promising horses we've got in the state at the moment is like a drifter who won a number of races on end in fact he won five in a row last preparation he went to melbourne but it just might have been at the end of his tether then his previous form was outstanding he's trialed up well and if any of that rain does come that would probably be a positive rather than a negative for him good speed in the race he should settle maybe third or fourth in the race and uh with taylor hutchinson on board that who knows him well i reckon he'll be pretty hard to beat another horse who uh who i think will be very hard to beat is the horse that's going to be the best horse in the race might be getting into a shade of a short price now is virtual illusion in race two he's clearly the best horse in the race the main issue for him is the map from the inside gate but jake toroke's got a habit with these short price horses of getting them out of trouble when he needs to so i'm probably happy enough to back back jake in to get the job done with virtual illusion who might have some bigger targets if he's able to win this
Speaker 2beautiful so race eight number six like a drifter and then virtual illusion race two number two anything else for us
Speaker 4uh race three number one boyd has been having a fantastic prep i thought he was a pbf at last start with a big weight and plenty of pressure there's a few other leaders in this race but boyd showed a few times that he can soak up pressure and still be there at the business end good ride for apprentice jordan weatherly who gets a handy three kilo claim uh i reckon he'll be hard to beat the other horse who i've got a lot of respect for in that race is over yonder he actually beat boyd home last start i'm probably going to end up having something on both of them
Speaker 2yep so that's a good one that's race three number one and uh race three number four there mates um bring it on we can listen to you on get on sa as well later tonight with the team
Speaker 4yeah we're over here filming i've actually just got will mccall if in the room with me as well he just wants to make sure you've got his tickets organized tomorrow
Speaker 2we'll tell him we're ready to go i've i've sorted him out um the glue is boys so don't worry mates um your name's on the door so if you just drop john kelton's name um you'll be right so tell the boys they're ready to go um they'll have some fun too thank you very much they need to provide us with a tip or two we might get them up on stage yeah i think
Speaker 4that's a good idea hopefully one of these mccall's can actually tip winners yeah yeah
Speaker 2yeah and tell us if the if the glue is boys are there as well um wayne hawks they tell me his team stays at the um the glue is stable so if you can get him mucking out the boxes and submit evidence there for us and send it send that to me that would be much appreciated all right i'll see you next time i'll pass that on good on you johnny good on you um tell the boys we look forward to catching up with them tomorrow there's johnny kelton thanks to racing sa time for a break on the other side of it aeon kemp will be our special guest as we talk to jesse gow from new zealand bloodstock of course aeon from killgraven lodge as we get set for the ready to run sale at karaka there next month
Speaker 1join the conversation text us on 736 736 live across australia this is giddy up with gareth hall welcome back to
Speaker 2giddy up gareth hall we always enjoy our chats now um thanks to new zealand bloodstock regarding some of the key players leading up towards the famous nzb ready to run sale which will be of course happening next month and jesse gower is out and about on this thursday morning hello to you jess thanks for joining us as always
Speaker 18hi gareth lovely to see you yes i am out and about i'm in the mighty waikato yes uh and i'm at killgraven lodge with aeon kemp one of our legendary legendary preparers he's been with us and present at the uh region run sale for probably more is it more than two decades probably coming
Speaker 19up 25 years now yeah we are so he knows
Speaker 18what he's doing and i just thought it'd be quite cool for you to get a bit of an insight from the horse's mouth really about what goes into preparing these two-year-olds that uh buyers can expect to see up at karaka on the 18th and 19th of november
Speaker 2well and thanks uh aeon thanks very much for joining us mate um your farm has had so much success preparing these uh two-year-olds for the sale what do you think that the key is to making sure that you prepare these horses ready to go um for the first of all the breeze ups and then get them ready for the sale
Speaker 19there next month yeah g'day gareth um our job basically starts way back in february march and we're going to be preparing these horses for the yearling sales and it's just it's the whole process it's towards the breeze update and that's our that's basically our our main goal to start with um because if we don't get a a good breeze up it's very hard to um sell the horses on from there but look it's i think one selection of the right horses um taking a nice tender approach to so we've got good x-rays at the end of the day but look it's just something that we've developed over time now and i think that the approach that we use works pretty well for us
Speaker 2has has the farms like yours changed the way that you go about it especially with the more technology and um the better technology and the more data that the the um buyers can now get before they purchase these horses
Speaker 19yeah probably for me i'm i don't do a lot of the stride analysis and striding i just keep the old traditional methods um just basically and we ride the horses a lot ourselves so we get an idea on how the horses are feeling um and just go on your own judgment rather than putting too many numbers and figures in front of people to just probably confuse the issue at some times have
Speaker 2you been blown away with the success of this this sale especially and um and even talking to people in sydney last week about they're ready to run sale it seems that that the owners and some of the farms now are changing their their mindset regarding these horses and they're not going to be able to sell them in the future they're not going to be able to sell the horses they're going to be able to sell them in the future ready to run sales in this country i know they're popular in other parts of the world but nzb has led the way regarding their ready to run sale but it seems that more people now are trying to identify a horse for the ready to run sale than the yearling sale yeah it's i think
Speaker 19just they've um got a lot more information of the horses when they do get to that stage um like especially when they're purchasing them and like nzb's got a proven record like what i don't know it's yeah and proven record
Speaker 18number of group one horses and that to come
Speaker 19out of the sale is just phenomenal so like the sale itself has a hugely proven record and i think kind of people have trust in the sale and trust in the kiwi vendors um when they come over here to
Speaker 2buy now how do i find a feroce and can you just how was feroce as you prepared him um for the sale i think it's been a long time for that ready to run sale because it was the horse that really kicked off don dom sutton's career in a way he just started off training and he wanted a final ready to run horse so um he could have a quick turnaround hopefully get results for his for his new connections and put his name out there and boy he did the job for him he went on to win a guinness
Speaker 19look it's ferocious he was like he was not a standout horse um he he galloped well he moved nice he was he was a little bit plain but that's been probably two of our classic winners sanxter was very much the same he was just a horse that everyone just wrote time down on their in their catalog pages um so it's just probably identifying how the horse moves and looking at what the horse can be rather than what it actually is now and
Speaker 2how do you do that is that it's like obviously the bloodstock they get a lot of money these days these bloodstock agents um but is it a skill trying to identify that or do you can you get a good feel for that aim as well yeah
Speaker 19we can get a good feel but like even in our operation a lot of it still goes back to the yelling sales yeah um like we're still buying a lot of horses ourselves to sale and basically for us it's how the horse moves it's that's generally if it's a good mover at a walk we've got a nice mover under saddle so for us that's that's probably our biggest um buying point of view for us is that we're still buying a lot of horses ourselves that we go to and then to have a nice type and then a stallion or or a pedigree that we could market to one of the markets eon
Speaker 2you've got i think 47 horses i think jess was telling me that you'll be selling um and they're from star size like sort of state state march basilica he had his first group one winner in australia there on saturday in the thousand guineas with saintly dancer per and canter which we love with semi williams and the team animo saturno muddens flying home affairs speaks for himself and i think you've got a suzanne as well um just i'm just asking for a friend mate i'm just asking for a friend which one should they buy eon oh look anyone
Speaker 19that's listened to me over the last probably three months i've been going on about a morris philly um cosmic crusaders old man yeah that's one yeah one one out of the boxes philly that i've loved since we've had a broken we've been breaking Just a beautiful marine filly. There's a little bit left field for kind of most of my Hong Kong buyers and even some of the Aussie buyers. But anyone that's listened to me over the last three months, it's the one I keep ranting on about.
Speaker 2All right, then. Let's hope no one's listening to you now since you've told us. So you've got your parades today. So how have they all pulled up from the breeze-ups and what's the process now trying to get them to Kauraka there next month?
Speaker 19So they've pulled up well from the breeze-ups. I'm not very happy with how they've come through it, how they all breezed up. Now it's just about putting the information together for the buyers. We had photos and videos all this week. We've done all the x-rays and prelim scopes. So it's now just about putting everything together so the buyers have got the full lot of information that they can, that we can provide them at the sales. But we're also more than happy if people want to give us a call and have a chat to us about, one horse or several horses, we're more than happy to give them the information that we have.
Speaker 2And Jess, the breeze-ups, they'll be shown on racing.com Tuesday morning and they'll be replayed as well. And for our Kiwi friends listening in New Zealand, they'll be played on Trackside in New Zealand and on your website. So there's plenty of opportunity to watch the breeze-ups there.
Speaker 18Yeah, absolutely, Gareth. And we're delighted with the line-up of professional breeze-ups that we saw across those two days. Last week, we got them live online on Friday. So since I've last spoken, they're up online. And it is just, it's a credit to the preparers how well all of the horses breezed, how consistently they breezed for two days. About 400 horses did breeze up. And I think it's well worth a look because it speaks volumes for the quality of horse on offer. And then, of course, with these videos that everyone's working frantically to get up online as well. And you'll see them, buyers will see them being loaded, consistently between now and the sale, along with the X-rays as well. And one thing we always have, our philosophy, is the more information, the better. So NZB just provides, we throw in so at buyers and allow them to make the most informed decision that they can. And this is a proven sale. You know, you don't get 33 Group 1 winners in five seasons without some pretty diligent work going into the sale. And, you know, I'm no expert, but there are plenty of experts who have indicated that this book, this catalogue is just as good, if not better, than what we've seen before. So there is a lot of potential there. I think we can really look forward to a boomer come 18th and 19th.
Speaker 2It's bloody exciting. I need a tour group because you go to New Zealand Cup Week and then you head over to, that's the South Island, then you go to the North Island and then you buy your next Char Wolf and then away you go. And that's all you need to do. And so if people are watching or listening to us right now, Jess, you just get in contact with NZB, if you want to go to the sales, which of course on the 18th and 19th of November at Karaka.
Speaker 18Yeah, for sure. Look, there's still four weeks to go. So there's plenty of time to make a plan, make a booking. Our team, we've got Harriet and Victoria manning the accommodation, all the hospitality. So they can assist with flights, accommodation, transfers, and hotel returns also, even restaurant recommendations. So yeah, we try and look after our buyers as much as possible, our friends. And welcome anyone to come along. And if they need any further information, we're always on the phone as well. And our bloodstock agents are available. They've looked at every force. We've got parades on farm. The week commenced on 2nd of November, where people can have a look firsthand and all of the local agents will be on hand. So they can provide further insight as well before people even get to New Zealand.
Speaker 2I saw a few of your bloodstock agents at the Everest there and they were having a lot of fun. I don't know how much work they're actually doing, Jess. Andy Buick. Yeah, Andy Buick. He just doesn't miss out on a dance, does he? Like he'll be there. He's already trying to sell people horses left, right, and centre. But Aon, we wish you the best of luck, mate. You should be so proud with the job that you've done with your farm for so many years. But you've got a proven record at Kilgrave in producing stars on the track, Hong Kong Derby winners, Guineas winners, VRC Derby winners. So we appreciate you coming on. Look forward to trying to get that Maurice Philly. She'll probably go for a million dollars now after you've told everyone. But good luck with it all. And Jess, we'll catch up with you next week.
Speaker 18Absolutely. Look forward to it. Thanks, Gareth. Thanks, Gareth.
Speaker 2There we go. Great to catch up with Jesse Gow and Aon Kemp from Kilgrave and Lodge. Time for a break. On the other side of it, we'll continue on the Thursday Form Lounge. And Chris Nelson will be next looking at that meeting in Brisbane.
Speaker 1Text us on 04999.
Speaker 2736 736. It's 20 minutes past 11. This is the Thursday Form Lounge. The Rising Sun Hotel, South Melbourne. We'll be there Melbourne Cup Eve for our Melbourne Cup function. It will be a lot of fun. Backing winners with premium steaks, high quality service and the thrill of every race day. We'll wonder if we can get JP McManus there. We might all get blown away with the Calcutta, but that would be something else. If the Rising Sun could get one of the biggest punters and owners in world racing. I'll see what I can do. Don't worry about doing your form for Doonburn. It's been transferred to Eagle Farm because of the weather. As I say hello to you, Chris Nelson.
Speaker 5Yeah, it has chaos up here at the moment. Yes. So much rain, so much rain falling. We've lost Ipswich today. We've lost the Sunny Coast tomorrow night. Now is a Polytrack meeting. And just to give some sort of indication, I'm sure people are well aware of where most are of Australia Zoo, where that is. I think there's been roughly about 200 mils of rain in that area, at least in the last 24 hours. So yeah, lots of rain. So Eagle Farm is the venue now on Saturday at this stage. It's a heavy 10 there also, but yeah, still bucketing down in Brisbane and there's more rain to come over the next few days and right through into Saturday. So whether we get a meeting or not remains to be seen, but it will certainly, be in the heavy range if we do. And that Gold Coast meeting, I see acceptances have been released for that meeting on Saturday. There's no way known that they're going to run on the grass there. So that'll go to a Poly meeting also. So a very, very interesting weekend coming up. And if you had spoken to me five minutes ago, you wouldn't have been able to hear me through all the rain. It was absolutely pelting down.
Speaker 2Never stops raining sometimes in Queensland, does it? When it rains, it pours, as they say.
Speaker 5Yeah, when it rains up here, it really does rain up here. Some areas near Caboolture, which is near that Australia Zoo area, had 300 mils in the last 24 hours. So that's flooding sort of situation. So everyone needs to stay safe, stay off the roads and stay home and do their form for a meeting that we hopefully have at some stage.
Speaker 2Where do we start with your plays then?
Speaker 5Well, I would just look at the moment of these last three races. I did think that race eight, number one, Fleetwood, would be well placed on wet ground. He's had a few runs back now. He's unbeaten on the heavy. He just looks. He looks to have found a right race there on Saturday. So at this stage, race eight, number one, Fleetwood, each way. Race nine, number 10, Dominant Darcy. Now, it backs up from last Saturday. Ran second to Speedtacular. And you'd have to say had every possible chance. But that was her first run for five weeks. I do like her better on wet ground. She's won two from two on soft. She hasn't seen anything worse than that as yet. And I just think with that run under the belt, a little bit of a weight drop for her, Dominant Darcy, and on wet ground. Even back to the 1,000 might suit her better also. So, yeah. Note that race has come back from 11.10 to 1,000. There are a few distance changes with the change of venue. And race 10, number one, SJ. I think he's pretty much right now. He's had the two runs back. He resumed in the Wheatwood. He just got too far back there. His last run at Eagle Farm, he was making good ground late. So I think the step up to 1,600 metres is okay for him. He's a war horse. So he won't have any troubles in the ground. And he looks close to a win. So we'll stick with those at this stage. But as you can imagine, my confidence levels aren't through the roof at this stage.
Speaker 2And the markets aren't up yet because they've had to take the Doombin meeting and then do it all again at Eagle Farm. And the worst possible, like you can understand, and World Under Racing Queensland have made that decision now. Yes. So they've been proactive. Obviously, Eagle Farm is a better track when it comes to the drainage. But it's a different heavy to Doombin. So you've got to go, I guess.
Speaker 5It is. And the contours of the track are different also. It's a much longer run home, as we know. And it's a much bigger and wider, spacious track. So it's not. It's not just you get up on speed and make a dash for it down the straight. So completely different ball game on Saturday should we get to Eagle Farm. But I will keep you posted, Garrett.
Speaker 2Anything out wide then in New South Wales? Or maybe you've got a Cox Plate tip for us, Chris O?
Speaker 5Well, I've only just started doing Sydney. So I'm hooking into that now. But look, I've had a. And look, I've got to sit down and do the Cox Plate also. I have plenty of time with all this rain. I've got nothing else to do. Chael Wolfe has been the one that's had me all the way through. He's just not put in a bad run as yet. So not having done the form 100%, but gee, I reckon he'd be just spot on on the day.
Speaker 2Do you know what I love about this game? You know how much I just love racing there, Chris O. I live and breathe it. And this is like one of my favourite big time races that I can recall that I just. I love talking about this year's Cox Plate. Because from a putting perspective, you listen to experts and people I've got so much respect for on Giddy Up throughout the week. Like you can make a case for Chael Wolfe. If Gator can make a case for the three rods and cosmic crusader, Others will say they can't win. So this is why I love racing, because people have strong opinions. They're different opinions. And at the end of the day, Zayn O'Brien has said, he goes, some people will be rewarded quite well, I should say, for getting their opinion right, and some won't. But this is why this Cox Plate's a beauty on Saturday.
Speaker 5Yeah, and the fact that it's not at Moonee Valley, too, makes it very interesting. I mean, they won't be taking off at the school. They won't be taking off well before the home turn. So it's completely different to previous years. And, yeah, it's very interesting. What's the weather going to be like? Is it okay?
Speaker 2Well, who knows? It's like a box of chocolates. You just don't know what you're going to get at the moment with the weather. They say it'll be coming mid-afternoon. Some say it'll be coming after the last.
Speaker 5So, yeah. Yeah, that doesn't help. We need to put a roof on some of these tracks, don't we?
Speaker 2No, then that would be boring if that was the case. Yeah, I agree with what he's joking.
Speaker 5Sammy Holland wouldn't like it. He loves his wet tracks. Yeah, he does. Yeah. He can have them.
Speaker 2It'll be interesting if Sammy Holland was running racing. Good on you, Chris.
Speaker 5I don't know how many employees he'd have, but anyway.
Speaker 2No, no, no. I wonder if the jockeys would go on strike. I wonder if they would dare. Good on you, mate. Thanks, Chris. Thanks, Gary. Cheers. There's Chris Nelson. Time for a break. On the other side of it, it's Tassie time. What about Demi Pooley-Tabasciani, all right? My beautiful fiancée. She's texting me right now knowing I do the show, and she's like a few of my friends of life. Don't drag me into this, Gary. No, she goes, I really don't want to bother you. I really don't want to bother you, but I need to sort out some things. I need to sort out my leaving plans if we are going to the races, like the Melbourne Cup week. She wants tickets because she wants to take a friend. God bless her. And I said, well, you are bothering me because it's halfway through the show. So I say Oaks Day, I reckon, or Champions. I reckon we'll go at Champions Day. If you had to choose one day for Flemington, she's going to be so happy I'm reading out our private messages on her hair. Okay, look after everyone else except your fiancée. Oh, that's a very good point you make, Demi. I reckon we'll go Champions Day, don't you? I reckon we'll go Autumn Glow or Oaks Day.
Speaker 16Champions Day. Yeah. Unless you want to be a real, real lovey-dovey partner and take her to Oaks Day and make her the centre of attention like you always do anyway because it's Ladies' Day.
Speaker 2What would you do? 499-736-736 if you're in my boat at the moment.
Speaker 16I'm a lover, not a fighter, so I'd go to Oaks Day if it was with the ladies.
Speaker 2Oaks Day, maybe, over Champions Day. I'll be going to all four days anyway. You and I both. We've got work to do, mate. Anyway, there we go. It's time now for Tassie time. Maddy Reid joins us, of course. I'll definitely take her to Launceston Cup Day, Demi. The connections run deeper. Tassie, the perfect place to race. Maddy Reid joins us. G'day, Maddy boy.
Speaker 20Morning, Ger. I enjoyed that. I'm coming across this weekend with a wife a cop's played and then I'm trading her for a boys' trip for both the Oaks and Champions Day. So I've got a few bases covered coming up.
Speaker 2Yeah, a lot of people have the same dilemma that I have at the moment. Not a dilemma, but it's a. So you try and work out, like, what's the best day to take your partner? And then the boys want a day out as well. So I like. But Demi could do both. She loves hanging out with us boys, so it doesn't really matter. But yeah, it's a. When you're trying to work such a. When you're trying to work out your spring plans, there's so many different options.
Speaker 20It's a tough life being a racing wag, I'd imagine, for the. For the wives and girlfriends, G. It's a political minefield that you've got to work through to try and avoid the doghouse.
Speaker 2What about. So you're going to Cox Plate and then staying on. Who are you tipping in the Cox Plate?
Speaker 20No, I won't be staying on. I can't get away for three weeks. I'll be coming back. Yeah, yeah. Look, I've had a couple of plays in the race, G. I thought Light Infantry, man, is a big price and of those at the head of the market, I'm with Aliana.
Speaker 2There you go. I like Light Infantry, man. I can't believe the price of him.
Speaker 20But anyway. Yeah, it just seems wrong. He ticks a lot of boxes and we're getting 31 and 7s to find out.
Speaker 2The only time we backed Erica, well, she's a superstar. We backed her when she rode that Scotty Brunson horse for the Keys and got beat. But ever since then, she just doesn't stop riding winners. Erica Bernberg, the superstar Irish jockey that's just dominating Tassie Racing at the moment. She rode half the card there last Friday night.
Speaker 20Yeah, sort of gone. Gone to a new level, G. She's 12 from 34 in Launceston since the night season began. So she's going as good as 1 in 3 and 4 of 8 in Launceston last week. She's just absolutely flying. She's not really tied to any particular stable down here. She did her apprenticeship with Adam Trinder, so I suppose that's probably the closest connection. She's got the most winners for him than any other train of the season and did have a double for him last week. But yeah, she's fine. She's got six rides on the eight-race card on Friday. Probably no massive standouts. Looking through them, I think probably the back half of her rides she's got within sight for Johnny Black in race six and McVeigh and Karina Maroubra for Adam Trinder in the last couple of races are good winning hopes. But with the form she's in, I'd be no surprise to see get at least one or two winners again tomorrow night. Do you know what we want you to do on Tuesday?
Speaker 2Next time the Longford Trials are on, all right, mate, we want you to go there because all the stars are starting to trial, aren't they?
Speaker 20Well, I did that this week, G. I made the trip north to Longford and rolled in there and had a good look at them. You're 100% right. Erica was on top of Aristopoulos, the gun two-year-old who did what he needed to do there. He only beat sort of maiden gallopers and the time relative to the session wasn't anything major. But both John and Erica were really happy with his work, so he'll have another trial in Launceston in a couple of weeks. before he heads to the three-roll cup. And perhaps the biggest story was the number of sort of new market Goodwood horses that trialled there at Longford. Jess Cruzen, who finished second in the new market last year, was there. Gigi's Gemstones, a former new market winner. You had Perspiration, Magna Prime, Blame It On The Boogie, Flying Concello. So there were a heap of sort of new market horses that all seemed to do enough there. And it bodes well for a pretty strong edition of the race. In a month's time.
Speaker 2All right, then. Who was the best of the trialers?
Speaker 20I thought Jess Cruzen. I thought Jess Cruzen's work was particularly good. He probably does need to find a couple of lengths to turn the tables on Gerardo from last preparation. But he's at the stage of his career where he's able to do it. And I'm pretty keen on Flying Concello too and how well she's going. That's the horse you spoke to Jesse Bazan about a couple of weeks ago with Mickey Stringer. The greyhound legend in the ownership. She's absolutely flying. So whether she can get to that level remains to be seen. But they're saying all the right things.
Speaker 2All right, then. Harness Racing at Burnie. The summer season kicks off on Friday night. And then, of course, we've got the traditional Sunday meeting at Launceston.
Speaker 20Yeah, great to have Burnie back, Gigi. The club do a terrific job with their meetings up there. They're always really well attended in the twilight slots, I think. About 10 to 5 is the first of eight races there. And Burnie on Friday. And a really good program in Launceston on Sunday afternoon. We've got the Shirley Martin Mother of Pearl for the mares and the Doug Martin Danbury Park Cup standing start event. We see Horatio Speculo, probably the hardest assignment he's had, this preparation in the Danbury Park Cup. And Ultimac for Geordie Shidner, who I know you've spoke to shortly, looks to go back-to-back in the Mother of Pearl. I'll be keen to hear how she's come back from Geordie. She's had a couple of trials. So, yeah, big weekend of harness racing. We're just rolling. Right on the eve of the Carnival, Gigi. So great to see sort of the good animals across all three codes starting to filter back to the track.
Speaker 2Yeah, can't wait for it, mate, as well. I'm enjoying my Tassie harness racing on a Sunday. So, Geordie Chibnall, of course, the girl from Kilmore that calls Tassie home. I'm looking forward to catching up with her next year on Tassie Time. Good on you, Matty boy. Thanks for that. Speaking of harness racing, you have finally recovered
Speaker 20from the bow tide trip to Tassie, Gigi. Yes, yes, yes.
Speaker 2Lucky. Well, I'm lucky to be alive. I'm lucky to be alive after Brent Crawford took me on a wild chase there at Launceston, showing me the nightlife. It was very interesting stuff, Matty Reid. Special type of chaperone. He's a very good man, but you know what you're in for when he's showing you the ropes. Thanks for that. There's Matty Reid. Geordie Chibnall joins us now, of course, the star harness racing driver in Tassie. Hello, Geordie. Hello, Gareth. How are you? You're still a Kilmore girl, aren't you, at heart?
Speaker 21Yeah, definitely a Kilmore girl. You can never get rid of that cold weather.
Speaker 2No, no. Don't forget where you come from. But, geez, you're dominating in Tassie. You must be enjoying it.
Speaker 21Yeah, I love Tassie. Love the lifestyle. It's really relaxed. The people are lovely, and the weather's good at the moment, so no complaints.
Speaker 2Yeah. Who's your best horse there at the moment? Is it the mare?
Speaker 21I train a horse as well called Magnetic Terror. He's a top-class, free-for-all horse here, but my mare is a very good horse. So, yeah. Yeah, I'd say she's definitely getting up there, obviously.
Speaker 2Alter action. It goes around the Shirley Martin Mother of Pearl on Sunday. Can you win with her?
Speaker 21I think she can win. She won the race last year. She's coming back from a – she broke the bottom carpal bone of her knee, so she's coming back from an injury, so that's always a bit iffy. But, no, I'm really confident with her. I was really happy with her trial on Monday, so onwards and upwards.
Speaker 2Yeah. She's just got a winner's record, hasn't she?
Speaker 21Yeah, she hates to lose. She never loses a dogfight. There's been a few races where she's been held out or there's gone quick lead times and she's still fought them all off, so, no, she's a little fighter.
Speaker 2Yeah. How many horses are you working at the moment?
Speaker 21I've got five at the moment. Yeah. Enough to keep me busy because I go to New Zealand in two weeks. Yeah. Yeah, five's a good number.
Speaker 2So you're representing Tasmania again. And this is in the Australasian Young Drivers' Championship. But recently you represented Tassie in the Australian Drivers' Championship in South Australia. Did you enjoy that experience?
Speaker 21Loved it. I had not much luck. No. But, no, it was a really good experience. Amazing people to do it with, made lifelong friends. And Adelaide did an amazing job with the whole night. They really looked after us. So that was a really good experience and I can't wait. Hopefully I can go again next year.
Speaker 2Yeah. Yeah. What did you learn from that experience, driving against the likes of a Gary Hall Jr.?
Speaker 21You learn a lot, actually. Like, Gary's a very different driver to the drivers that we have here, for example. Even, like, Adam Sanderson, he's very different as well. They drive pace different. They go a lot faster in these races, I guess, because no one really knows the track. They just go flat out the whole way. But, no, you learn and you learn to drive different horses that you haven't driven before and different tracks and things. Very grateful for the experience.
Speaker 2And in the Australasian Young Drivers' Championship, you go and get those Kiwis. They hand up at the 400 metre mark and all that, so make sure you don't do any of that, Geordie. But you must be looking forward to showing how good Tassie Racing is.
Speaker 21Yeah, for sure. It's going to be – I'm a bit nervous to go, I'll be honest with you. I don't really know anyone over in New Zealand. I know Crystal Hackett. I was on a junior driver's trip. A couple of years ago, and she was on the trip. But it'll be a good experience to learn their way of racing. There's a lot of different rules. They sent us the rule book the other day, and I had a quick look, and I was a bit, oh, jeez, a bit of racing there. But, no, really looking forward to it. And, again, grateful to Tassie Racing for picking me to go on the trip.
Speaker 2Well, you deserve it because you've been a great ambassador for Tassie Harness Racing. And your results. Speak for themselves. Can you kick off the summer season at Burnie with a few winners? And what would be your best over the weekend, both at Burnie and Launceston?
Speaker 21I think Burnie's a tricky track. I've only driven three winners at Burnie, so I don't really have much luck there. But I think knockout's probably my best chance at Burnie. I think he's in race two, maybe. Hopefully he can get close to the speed somewhere. And over the weekend, I'd say – I'd say that Ultimate Action would be my best for the weekend, most definitely.
Speaker 2Ultimate Action, the star mare there, going around the Shirley Martin Mother of Pearl as she looks to defend her title in that race. Hey, Geordie, you keep on representing Kilmore like you are in Tassie. You go and get them in New Zealand. We appreciate you joining us on Giddy Up for Tassie time.
Speaker 21Thanks, mate. Really appreciate it.
Speaker 2There's Geordie Chibnall there, the Star Harness Racing driver from Tassie. Want to take a break? Do you know what? I see Miles Fitzgerald in the background there, the magic man. He's going to come on Giddy Up. That'll be great. He's just jumped out of the boxes there, ready to come into the studio. I've got a beef to pick with Milo as well, so he'll join us in the studio straight after this. And he's got some best bets as well as we go through some of the features at Ascot this weekend.
Speaker 1Across Australia, this is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 2Great to have your company. It's been a busy show. Don't forget this weekend with Bet365. Races one, two, and three on Cox Plate Day at Flemington. Gosford now a soft six from a good four. Heavy rain continues. So there's rain everywhere in the northern states. No Ipswich today. It's a beautiful day, however, here in Victoria. At Mornington, should be a great day's racing there on a good four. The rail is out seven metres. Myles Fitzner, the magic man, joins us. G'day, Milo. Hello, G.
Speaker 22Did you enjoy the last weekend? Yeah, I did. Yeah? Yeah. They do it well there in Sydney, don't they? They do, don't they? They certainly do.
Speaker 2It's one of the best days on the racing calendar. Like, Caulfield was packed out. Everest Day is great. And then we get set for Cox Plate Day.
Speaker 22Man, what a day this is going to be. Race day rain forecast, too, for what, the next two weekends with hot weather in between. So it's been a tough enough spring to try and find a few, hasn't it?
Speaker 2Well, it's been a tough enough spring trying to predict the weather, really.
Speaker 22Well, the weather, but also we're seeing horses, you know, the last few weeks we've seen some horses sort of go out of their skin, haven't we? So. And I think with the Cox Plate, there's a few that are a bit disrespected in the market.
Speaker 2Who are you backing in the Cox Plate?
Speaker 22Well, I like the decision to run Buckaroo in the mile and then Birdman and Light Infantryman to still stay in the Cox Plate. I think Birdman is, he was enormous. But how's Birdman that price on Ladd-Lencher at $41 or something? Yeah. It doesn't make a lot of sense to me.
Speaker 2Well, what price would she's alibi be in this race?
Speaker 22Well, yeah, a lot shorter than a couple. So I thought Birdman, Sir Dilius is getting to a backable price. I'm happy to take that. Although if this was at the Valley, I think I'd be with him.
Speaker 2I'm with my man, Harry Coffey. I hope Harry can win the Cox Plate.
Speaker 22Light Infantryman. Not without a hope.
Speaker 2No, I reckon he's a big price.
Speaker 22It's a good competitive race, this.
Speaker 2Yeah. It's just a great race. It's a great, like there's some Wafer Age stars, some sensational three-year-olds, Cosmic Crusade adds a lot of interest, the different form lines, like Child Wolf comes to town after having a really good spring without winning. For me, from a punting perspective and from a racing fan perspective, I reckon it's one of the best Cox Plates we've had for a while. It's just wide open.
Speaker 22Yeah. Competitive and wide open. And if you like a certain form line, you believe in that, where there's five that you can choose from. So Child Wolf isn't without it either. I mean, it's a very, very competitive Cox Plate.
Speaker 2And people say it might lack a little bit of class. I disagree with that. No, from me, like there's no Autumn Glow or she's alibi. But yeah. You've got last time, she's alibi and Autumn Glow competed over the 2,000 metres. Horses that beat them are in the race.
Speaker 22Yeah, and that's what you want. That's exactly what you want. And being at Flemington just sets up a bit differently for a few runners. Hence why, if I think if it was at Moody Valley, you'd see Warwoven a lot shorter.
Speaker 2Yeah. These three-year-olds, how are they going to handle this high pressure race? And as Kiramar pointed out, they'll be going track record speed. Well, and that's the thing is
Speaker 22you've got to be up there. It suits probably a horse like Child Wolf. And also probably Birdman.
Speaker 2Yeah. What else do you like on the card there at Flemington on Saturday?
Speaker 22I haven't really finalised a lot. I was interesting to hear you earlier talking about Angel's Fury. That Cheyenne and Aroused race is an absolute cracker, the Crockett. I do believe you can chop early. I thought Ice Cool for David Pfeiffer and Damien Lane. If your dandles are straight, they won't get near it. It's a nice horse. And also Barracks. I mean, you wouldn't go too far to back against Johnny O'Neill, Ethan Brown and Kiramar at the moment.
Speaker 2I wouldn't. They're all flying. Kiramar is in unbelievable form. If you went and had a look around the country for the in-form trainers, well, Mitchell Pateman would be one of them.
Speaker 22Well, that's who we're about to talk about, aren't we? A little bit in WA. Big red zoom.
Speaker 2Are you tipping him in the Belgravia?
Speaker 22Well, with these, this meeting is an absolute cracker in WA. And of course, for racing WA TV, we'll chat to the boys on Saturday as well. But you sort of have to. I mean, Beaty, he's a machino. These sort of runners. I think these horses. It's been almost set up beautifully for it. Boy crush wouldn't shock me for Grassy and Luke Fernie. But I think big red zoom is a really good price to find out. Beaty and he's a machino. I've been with them before. We know how good Beaty is and how good the Casey's are. But I just think probably short enough now. But I thought big red zoom, maybe a boy crush. Both at $10 for about $3.65.
Speaker 2This might be a big call. I've got the Guineas winner for you in WA. Yeah. Godspeed. Yeah. I love him. He was like, he should have won on Daboo. And then he was great defeating head and shoulders at Belmont. Obviously, he's got to step up here. But he's a son of playing God out of a Lonro mare. I reckon the Kenjimis are going really well. I don't think he can win on Saturday from gate 13. But I reckon he's a horse that you can follow.
Speaker 22Yeah. Well, I've liked the playing God so much. I went and got one myself. Did you? Yeah, I did. What are you going to call it, Milo? I don't know. I don't have enough to get into the names. But yeah. all I don't mind that. Good little tickle-up run. There's a couple of really good horses going around. The one thing I do like is we get another look at Basset Hound again. Yes. And he was too good for light clockwork. And light clockwork is going to be better suited over, I think, the mile, where Basset Hound over the 1,000 metres, you want him to open up a price again for Mitch Pateman. But he should be taking care of them in race number seven.
Speaker 2He should really, shouldn't he? There's a lot of pressure on Basset Hound.
Speaker 22Well, I don't – I think he's – after he knocked off light clockwork first up like that, I went, hang on a minute, maybe I've just underrated him. That was the run that I needed for him to put it on the wall.
Speaker 2I think light clockwork, they got it wrong. They shouldn't have dropped back to the 1,000.
Speaker 22Well, I think they're looking at maybe the 1,600, so we had to run somewhere leading up. But it just might have been that they bumped into him. I mean, if they didn't bump into him, he wins, right?
Speaker 2There's Pete Anthonis there. Maybe he probably knows better than us regarding if they got it wrong there with light clockwork there dropping back to the 1,000. Now, who is – If you had to choose one horse, take your pick, Basset Hound or Roger? Basset Hound. Yeah. Yep. I love Roger, but –
Speaker 22And here comes Roger. He's a really nice horse. I mean, we saw another good one the other weekend in Western Miss coming through. We've been following it on SEN tracks since it sort of copped a bad one there at Bunbury, and we've just backed up and backed up. There's some really, really nice horses coming through in WA and getting ultra-competitive, ultra-competitive. Yeah. So, Ritten Miss. Basset Hound, light clockwork, Roger. And it's good. You give them a good Roger in the first up. Oh, gee whiz. Kez Cobb. I think – I mean, out of this three-year-old race, you know, Beattie, Big Red Zoom, there's some nice horses coming through for the carnival.
Speaker 2Yeah. Some – Like, Champions Day is going to be some day, some news fielding the three. So, Autumn Glow and Kieran confirmed that Tempted will be there. So, that's going to be a great day.
Speaker 22If the Autumn Glow and Tempted roll up – No, they are. That's the best day of the entire spring. Correct. Because we'll have the rest of them.
Speaker 2Right? Unfortunately, Char Wolf won't.
Speaker 22That's okay. But I think Cox Plate will be – That's his grand final.
Speaker 2Have you got an opinion in the Melbourne Cup?
Speaker 22I had lunch at the Victoria Club on Tuesday. Tuesday, yeah. And had a good chat to the handicapper and the guys that have gone overseas and got them all. This is probably the year where I think the internationals – I know we've said that maybe a couple of times over the last five. But what we saw in the Geelong Cup, for them to do that, that puts the writing on the wall for a few that are still there that we haven't seen. And your chat earlier this morning, when we're talking about point of law, just made me more keen on James J. Braddock. Yes. And he's a horse that I think I've sort of known about for a while. I haven't deep-dived too far on him yet. But the ground with these, say, five to nine, the ground's going to be everything when we get to this race at the Melbourne Cup. So, race day rain. You know, we talk about these horses handling. Speed and tempo. I think if you gave me one now, I'd probably be leaning towards James J. Braddock and the Japanese runner.
Speaker 2You're a good judge, James J.
Speaker 22Braddock. And what's the Japanese runner's name? Stinger Glass. Stinger Glass. So, I don't know whether that horse can do it in the Geelong Cup, but that was unbelievably tough. I just don't know whether or not he could make an appearance. Him into favouritism shows me that it's more even. I kind of like that because now there's –
Speaker 2It was an overreactionist.
Speaker 22Way up big. Way. And you've still got horses like Zakuma, Chocolates, these horses in the market that are far, far too short. Recency sort of bias on them. Yes. I'm happy to take – the best of the locals is Middle Earth. There's no doubt about that, in my opinion.
Speaker 2Yeah, that's what – I think Kieran, he told us today, what price we're getting Middle Earth with about $3.65. I think it's about $16.
Speaker 22I think he's the best of the locals. And I think if we want to start stacking up a few of these internationals, the best of the Japanese would be Stinger Glass. And I think close. I think close enough to the best of the others is James J. Braddock. That's just how I'm seeing it at the moment. But, I mean, we've got a lot of water to pass under the bridge. I'm hearing this morning – I was just getting my ticket to the Melbourne Cup Call of the Card. They've actually got the big punters there. A thousand sold already, and the big, big punters are in the room.
Speaker 2It'll be the best Call of the Card ever.
Speaker 22Yep. James J. Braddock around $13 to $14. Stinger Glass around the same.
Speaker 2Tony G will be there. He was spending up. And, like, J.P. McManus. And he's one of the biggest punters we've ever seen.
Speaker 22Goody Two-Shoes. Be interesting to see if it gets bet. It'll get bet. And that's the – you know, you can't rule out horses that have proven that they can run 3,200 metres either. But I know a lot of people have messaged me about Hope or Rock, but I think they're going to just destroy horses. Kings Valley, Mr Monaco, Chocolates, St George and Aliana, I'm unsure.
Speaker 2Are you going to put your hand up for a bet there at the Call of the Card? No. With the microphone. Yeah. Miles Fitz is here.
Speaker 22I've done it a couple of times without a go, but it's been more for show rather than – Melbourne Cup is the most difficult race of the year. I'd rather step into – The Calcutta on Monday night at the Rising Sun. Yeah, I'd rather do that. Yeah, yeah. Or the event that we have at the Rising Sun Hotel.
Speaker 2No, we don't have a Calcutta.
Speaker 22Yeah, we have an event if you want to come.
Speaker 2Hey, tell me this. Tomorrow you're coming to the Ascot Vale Hotel. Yes. Liver's going to be serving pints. I think he can. I think he's got his licence. And the bar.
Speaker 22So I won't quite hit the 100 in 100 there at the Ascot Vale. No. Or the 100 in three days or whatever it is.
Speaker 2Can you be there?
Speaker 22But I will be there tomorrow from about 12.30 until sort of 3.30, and then I'm flying up to Sydney for the show.
Speaker 2Okay. So I'm flying from there. You've been enjoying Giddy Up Saturday?
Speaker 22Yes. We're going to start – this weekend, Gano and I, we're going to start our own top four multi. So Bet365 have given us the green light. There you go. And so this weekend, tune in Saturday morning. We'll have our top four multi. Yes. We're going to have our top four multi up there as well.
Speaker 2So you're going – well, you're not really going against this because we're on the same team at the end of the day. But you're going to have your top four. So you're going to choose two horses each. Two horses each. Yeah, you're going to give Zach an opportunity to get Zach Tunbridge.
Speaker 22Well, he can if he wants. He's the boss, man, when you pay the bills. You're the boss. You're the boss. When he pays the bills, away you go.
Speaker 2So, yeah, tomorrow's going to be a lot of fun. So all of the SEN team will be there. I don't know if there's tickets still available. I think there might be five or so left.
Speaker 22I don't have one, but I did think – I spoke to Shilte and he said, mate, just roll up.
Speaker 2I think, yeah. I think if you're giving your tips –
Speaker 22I did like you on the way in that you sort of said, just mention Johnny Kelton at the door. You know how many people are going to roll up and say, I'm going to be on Johnny Kelton's list at the door. I loved listening to that on the way through.
Speaker 2Now, Sean Casey was going to join us, but he's very happy he couldn't. He's talking to Jimmy Taylor too much or something. I don't know why he couldn't speak to us, but he sent through a text message.
Speaker 22Keen on Beatty?
Speaker 2He said, very happy with Beatty. He's a machino. Looking forward to see where we go after Saturday with them. So, so, so God is probably the best chance from the stable.
Speaker 22Well, that leans me – that's good because Beatty, then it looks like there's maybe bigger fish to fry. He's a machino. I was with it at an itch-waste price first up. And, I mean, big red zoom put him to the sword. At 55 kilos V, him running with a hell of a lot more than that. He had 57 kilos from 13. So, I'm still – I still think big red zoom's a big sniff.
Speaker 2Well done representing Messy and Track on Monday and the golf day.
Speaker 22Yeah, we took that out thanks to Greyhound Racing Victoria. So, Troy Little, myself, Corey Smith and Toddy won that by two shots. It was a building. Oh, did you really? Did you beat Jason Thompson? Yeah, they weren't even anywhere near us.
Speaker 2Jason, he wouldn't have liked losing, Jason.
Speaker 22I did check the score of ours halfway through.
Speaker 2Hey, good on you, Milo. We'll catch you again from the Ascot Vale Hotel. We'll kick off the show live. From the Ascot Vale Hotel, from 8 o'clock with the Hunter's Edge, Mark Hunter will be there. And then, hopefully, you can join us from 12 o'clock for a big luncheon. But it'll be a massive show, as it always is. I appreciate you. I thank you for your company on this Thursday. It has been one hell of a show. You can listen to all of our segments and interviews by subscribing to Giddy Up with your local podcast subscriber. Have a great day.
