Giddy Up Full Show (22/09/26)

This episode of Giddy Up with Gareth Hall covered a wide range of thoroughbred racing news ahead of a busy spring carnival. The headline story was the arrival of the world's best racehorse, Ka Ying Rising, who has settled into quarantine at Canterbury and is a short-priced favorite to defend his Everest crown. Yulong CEO Sam Fairgray joined the show to discuss Angel Capital's impressive Group 1 win, the plans for Treasure the Moment, and the success of the operation's stallion roster, including the popular first-season sire Devil Knight. Hall of Fame jockey Craig Newitt also appeared after being elevated to legend status in Tasmania, reflecting on his career and the horses that defined it. Later, the futures panel of David Gately, Trent Mason, and Mickey Gannon analyzed key spring targets, including the Caulfield Guineas, Golden Rose, Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate, King Charles III Stakes, and Melbourne Cup. The panel expressed reservations about Eliana's weight and campaign, identified Guesthouse and St. Gothard as leading three-year-olds, and flagged Highwayman and Trust Your Instinct as emerging Melbourne Cup contenders. A major talking point was the Melbourne Racing Club's review into Saturday's Caulfield meeting, which declared the track safe and criticized the jockeys and stewards for moving the rail unnecessarily.

Speaker 3good morning gareth
Speaker 2how are you good thank you was there a relief to see angel capital do what he did there on saturday
Speaker 3absolutely yes uh he's obviously always had the ability there and uh he's just needed uh thing to swing his way and um and on saturday uh it did and uh i think uh it was a lovely result for us and um i think you know just uh ben was very happy as well because he knew the horse had the ability there it was just a matter of uh everything falling into place and it worked out
Speaker 2beautifully like he didn't get held up he was always in a wonderful spot when benny mellon got into the center of the track he really never looked like getting beat down that straight there at caulfield no
Speaker 3he's um he's got such a big stride on him he just needs to uh be able to have clear air and build momentum um and you know not have any interruption in the straight so um you know he was a bit unlucky a year ago uh in that but uh on saturday he was very very impressive
Speaker 2so from a from a a breeding operation perspective now um so what does it mean for angel capitals does mean this is his last season is the one group one enough would you like to win more with him um will that change his value so how does that all work out
Speaker 3now so with a stallion um like angel capital you want to um you know try and keep building his profile um obviously um you know he'd you know had a good reputation um but after winning a group one that um you know cements um you know his future as as a stallion but you want to be able to keep building on it and um you know we need to sit down over the next uh week or so and just map out which direction we go with him chris will um give us some feedback once he's um come back in the stable after some time out in the paddock and uh see whether we um you know head down the everest path or you know look at something like the last day of the um flemington carnival the championship sprint yeah
Speaker 2betty mellon pointed out that just freshened him up and put the blinkers on him down the straight he might be a horse worth watching there down that straight there at flemington on on champions day but i guess the everest um is a big carrot to throw in front of you obviously you've got to beat carling rising which will be very very difficult but you've got a slot so you've got to you've got to use one of your horses would he be the number one seed or will you look towards one of your three-year-olds like a paradoxium i
Speaker 3think at the moment he's probably the uh the number one seed um and you know obviously with him you know a big factor is getting the dry track uh so that's something that you know will definitely come into play um you know watching the forecast you know hitting them to the everest and and how that's going to map out but you know obviously carrying rising is going to be very hard to beat but it's great prize money um you know all the way down you know to fifth and you know even you know to 12th you're still you know getting your money back so um you know we'll uh we'll have one of our uh resiners um there and our slot and um and uh you know there's still a lot of other slot holders that are looking for horses so we may end up with two
Speaker 2horses maybe yeah and and what about his his racing career so how long does he race on now for your record
Speaker 3so we um you know he'll you know he'll race on through the spring and and then uh you know there's a couple of nice races in the um in the autumn you know for a horse like him um you know to um to run in that you know if he uh if he could win them it you know adds to his value as a as a stallion so um you know we'll just uh you know get through the spring and and then um you know just place him right to uh to make sure that um you know he's uh you know increasing his uh potential as a stallion could we see him overseas possibly um you know mr chang is um you know he'd he'd love to see him maybe go to to ascot and um you know that uh you know the the straight there at ascot may be uh you know with a slight climb may be uh really suitable for a horse like um angel capital so um you know nothing's uh nothing's out of the question
Speaker 2all right then um treasure the moment will you start here on sunday afternoon in a fee and stakes
Speaker 3that's the plan at this stage um you know after you know the the disappointing run um at flemington um you know the vets went over and matt went over and um nothing uh nothing to miss with her but uh and she's uh bounced back and she's she's bright and she's well so uh the plan at this stage is for her to run on sunday in the in the fan so
Speaker 2is it d-day for her then on sunday in a way i think uh i
Speaker 3think you definitely want to see you know her bounce back um she's been very consistent all her career and uh you know the race there in the maccabi diva was uh you know not too bad to be true really that's
Speaker 2right that's right yeah and we know mr zhang is like she's still his favorite horse isn't she
Speaker 3definitely you know to uh you know so uh no we'll we'll look after her but uh you know she's obviously um you know very important to the the whole yulong team so um you know we'll see how she goes on sunday and reassess things from there
Speaker 2manny lorry's done a wonderful job with her so is still the is the caulfield cup the aim with her still if she if everything goes to plan sunday
Speaker 3if everything goes to plan you know sunday i think um i think that would be um you know where she'd
Speaker 2likely head yeah um she's got some exciting three-year-olds i'm most excited about omelong do we get to see him on saturday the son of extreme
Speaker 3choice so he's uh his aim is the the superimposed um and um you know he's sort of at this stage heading uh on a derby path um you know with him but uh he's a he's a horse that um you know kelvin and tony have always had an opinion of and he he just seems to keep on on stepping you know uh up each start so um you know he's exciting horse to have heading into the spring and um and let's hope he could uh be at flemington
Speaker 2on derby day okay what about the sprinter there for chris waller omelong the um i think i got mixed up uh i know what i know what horse you're talking about i'm just trying to think about its name but um we haven't seen omelong that um since um i think rose hilly won in july that big chestnut for chris wall that was so impressive. That's right.
Speaker 3He's, uh, you know, he's a lovely colt and, uh, he looks to, he's come back and, uh, had a couple of trials and trialed impressively. So he's on a cool more path. Um, so he's, uh, I think the plan is he'll likely kick off in the heritage stake, uh, first up, which has been a successful path, uh, pathway to the cool more. So, um, that's, that's the plan with him, but, um, you know, he's a, he's an exciting horse and, uh, untapped potential at
Speaker 2this stage. And what about Paradoxium?
Speaker 3How is he? He's really well. He, uh, he came through his, uh, trip to, to Melbourne and, and the win there, uh, very well. So he, um, he's likely to run next in the Roman console, um, and then, uh, and then back down for the cool more. So, but it was nice just to see him be able to come down and, uh, and travel, um, have the run down the straight, handle that well, um, albeit still, you know, a bit green, be able to win. And, uh, but, I think the key to him was, uh, being able to travel him. Obviously, um, he was favorite for the magic millions last year and traveled up to the gold coast and was withdrawn after getting a temperature, but, um, you know, he's traveled back to Sydney and, uh, he's, uh, he's come through the race really well.
Speaker 2I reckon that horse we were talking about before with the McEvoy's La Polo there for your Derby chance for Tony and Calvin McEvoy. Hey, um, um, you must be excited to represent New Zealand with well-written.
Speaker 3That's, um, it's very exciting. She, uh, after the Warriors getting beaten, uh, well-written is going to be there for representative here in, uh, in Australia now. So, uh, she's, uh, she's well, um, and, uh, you know, she'll be heading over, uh, to Sydney soon and, um, it'd be exciting, uh, when she gets here.
Speaker 2You've been in this game a long time, Sam. Um, was it a difficult decision to, to take off Manny Cartwright or is it just the, the world that we live in? It's a, it's a big business and, um, it's really difficult to knock back a rider like a Zach Lloyd and his own backyard. And I think
Speaker 3that's, um, you know, that's what it came down to. Um, you know, the, the decision, um, you know, to put Zach on and, and Manny hadn't, uh, obviously he's, uh, done a fantastic job. And, um, but you know, when, uh, when you're bringing a Philly over from New Zealand, you want to have, you know, someone who knows the local, you know, local riders knows, you know, the horses really well. And, um, you know, Zach's been right in fantastic form. So, um, you know, I think it's great. That we've, um, able to secure him to, to rider.
Speaker 2Yeah. A lot of questions coming through for you, Sam. Very popular man. I hope he wins. Um, I love her in the Caulfield Cup. Can you ask Sam, does he share my confidence? That's from Tony.
Speaker 3So I hope he wins. Um, she's next up on the Turnbull. Um, and interestingly, she never, uh, she didn't win until she got to 2000 meters. So, um, she's had five starts over 2000 meters. I think she's won two group ones and two group two. So now that she's getting up to the right distance, um, you know, I think, um, we'll see, you know, her, um, start to shine. And, uh, she was strong in the last hundred meters in the Maccabi and the Turnbull will, uh, um, you know, tell the story with her, whether she's on track for a Caulfield Cup.
Speaker 2And how's the start of the breeding season going for you along Sam?
Speaker 3Fantastic. Um, you know, we've, um, you know, obviously had the three young horses and Private Harry and Devil Knight and Binrock, and they're all, um, getting their mares and foal, which is great. Um, you know, plenty of foals being born. Um, we've got, um, you know, a few lovely foals, um, out of some of the nice mares that Mr. Zhang has purchased, um, over the past few years. And, uh, you know, the likes of a Tissue has a, a lovely filly by Alabama Express and Coco Sun, um, she's got a lovely Pierrata Colt, um, Chains of Lightning and Alabama Express filly. So it's, it's a great time of year. Um, you know, we're, you know, there's plenty of grass here in, in Victoria. And, um, the season started well.
Speaker 2Yeah. Um, that is exciting. And then like that, they tell me Devil Knight. I've had a few people get in contact with me. He's very popular. You can't get into him, that first season sire.
Speaker 3That's right. He's, um, you know, he's, he's, you know, been very, very popular, obviously, um, being by extreme choice and a blue diamond winner. Um, you know, he's, you know, being very, very well received and, uh, he's taken to his new role, uh, exceptionally well. So, um, he's got a, a good career ahead of him.
Speaker 2And that property that you will set up there in the Hunter Valley, is that far away?
Speaker 3Uh, Sejinho, so, um, you know, it's, it's, it's a love, it's a lovely property and, um, we, um, you know, it had been a sort of a boutique, um, breeding operation for broodmares without any stallion facilities. So, um, we built stallion facilities there and, and obviously have the four stallions there, um, this, this season. So, um, you know, we've got about 160 broodmares, um, on it. Um, on the property at the moment. And, um, uh, and we'll probably send some more mares up, um, from Victoria to get bred to those stallions.
Speaker 2And that's been a pretty easy transition then?
Speaker 3Very easy. Um, the staff that, um, yeah, all the staff were retained that, uh, were there when we purchased it. So it's been a very easy transition. We're there. They're a great team, um, you know, hit it up by Brian Clark and, um, you know, they're doing a great job.
Speaker 2Well, we appreciate your time. Thanks for all those updates with those horses, mate. And good luck. Um, for the rest of the spring, we appreciate your time here on Giddy Up.
Speaker 3Good as gold.
Speaker 2Thanks, Gary. Sam Fairgray, the CEO of Yoolong. 15 minutes past eight, Craig Newitt, who became a legend in TAS racing there on Friday night. So he'll join me next year on Giddy Up.
Speaker 1Join the conversation. Text us on 0-4-double-9-7-3-6-7-3-6 live across Australia. This is Giddy Up. Giddy Up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 4Extreme choice in front. Flying Arty with a length and a half to make up 100 left to go. Extreme choice is going strongly, though, and he'll score. Extreme choice, two lengths to Flying Arty. Big quinella for the stables.
Speaker 5Miss Andretti and Magnus settle down to fight it out. The two LZs are now takeover targets. Dandy Manners finishing fast as well. Miss Andretti's digging deeper, and Miss Andretti, she's a champion.
Speaker 4She goes on to win the King's stand. Buffering for home. Leading narrowly. Here's Sama Reddy. She loops them on the outside. Sama Reddy and race past Buffering with 100 to go. And Sama Reddy is starting to sprint right away, and she'll bolt it in. Sama Reddy by three, widening on Buffering.
Speaker 6Then came down the outside, Perfect Promise. It's Ladder the Manor in front. Fields of Omar and Perfect Promise out wide with Valedictim. And back to the inside. Great is great. Ladder the Manor grabbed by Perfect Promise. And Perfect Promise will get up and beat Ladder the Manor. Fields has got up to run.
Speaker 2Yeah, on Friday night, it was great to hear the news that Craig knew it. It was inducted or elevated to legend status in the Tasmanian Racing Hall of Fame. He's ridden over 34 Group 1 winners or 34 Group 1 winners all around the country. And as you just heard there, he's ridden some of our best ever horses. And when I think of Tassie Racing, I think of Froggy Newitt, the cleaner, Mystic Journey, Bowtied. And he's been a wonderful ambassador for Tassie Racing. And he joins us now. Froggy, congratulations, mate. You thoroughly deserve that accolade there on Friday night.
Speaker 7Thank you very much, Gareth. Yeah, it's very humbling and very honoured to be in that category. And yeah, it probably hasn't quite sunk in, to be honest, mate. I was inducted into the Hall of Fame 13 years ago. So, I mean, there's quite a few people sort of in the Hall of Fame in all different sports. But there's only very few that have been. There's only very few that have been elevated into this category. So, yeah, it's very humbling.
Speaker 2Were you expecting it Friday night?
Speaker 7Yeah, they give me. They actually rang me. They rang me last year to see if I was going to the awards night. And I said, no, I won't be going. So, I think they may have had an idea that they might have done it last year. But they rang again this year. And I said, oh, I probably won't be. There'll be races on the Saturday. And then he rang back 10 minutes later. And he said, well, this is what's happening. And I said, well, I've got to go, don't I? Yeah. Give me a couple of tables. And we'll be there.
Speaker 2Yeah. And so, what does it mean to you, Froggy? I know that I read there on social media when I wake up Saturday morning that it's like one of your greatest ever achievements. But it is something quite special to be elevated to a legend.
Speaker 7Yeah, I definitely think it is, Gareth. I've been very fortunate to ride a lot of champion horses over the years. Obviously, Miss Andretti winning at Royal Ascot sort of right up there. But obviously, some of our better size even now. It's a little extreme choice. I was the one that won their group ones on them. But I think to be put into this category, it's something they can sort of never take away now. So, for a kid that grew up just aspiring to be just like his old man, albeit he was a jump swatter and I was never really going to do that, to be recognized as one of the state's best ever. Yeah, it's very humbling.
Speaker 2And do you pinch yourself with the career that you've had? When you look back now, you've been riding for a fair while, Froggy. Who would have thought how quickly our lives go? But it's been some career, really. It's been some journey.
Speaker 7Yeah, I've been very fortunate. But it hasn't been through lack of effort. I've worked very hard my entire career. I mean, in my speech on Friday night, I was riding track work when I was nine years old for Terry Rose at Deloraine. The authorities these days would execute you if they found out a nine-year-old was dead. riding track work so it's all i've ever dreamt of doing um i was very fortunate that my old man terry rolls leon wells they're the ones that really got me kick-started um and then obviously when i moved over to be apprenticed to to the friedman brothers it really took off but it hasn't been through a lot of effort but i've been very fortunate too like i've never had an injury in the 26 years i've been riding i've never had time off with an injury so i mean you look at ollie who probably broke nearly every bone in his body probably probably more than once um jimmy cassidy all those guys like they've had extended periods off through injury whereas i've been very fortunate that i'm even though i'm a little bit heavier now i've always been a lightweight rider and with no injuries it's it's just enabled me to basically just do the same thing day in day out without without um having to worry about it
Speaker 2you've been there but you've never think that you've been able to achieve i reckon as you just pointed out
Speaker 7froggy yeah absolutely i um i was very fortunate to team up through a lot of years with with mcpice who we had we had a great run i think i rode 17 or 18 group one winners for him and obviously lincoln rupee summer ready pompey ruler um so i've been i've been very fortunate to um to get on a lot of good horses which which at the end of the day is what we what we strive to do does that still drive
Speaker 2you today to make sure you try and find your next champion and throughout your career like you recently won a new market your fourth new market there with cabela's fb and baker but you've got that you've got that knack to always find a good horse um
Speaker 7yeah like i said i've always been sort of a a lightweight rider so you you pick up those nice three rods like your extreme choices your schnitzels in in the plates and those sort of horses with no weight but then i've also had the um the the big weight for age horses like your pompey rulers and that so every year i i did have a dry spell there for a while i think i went 10 years without a group one winner but it wasn't through lack of trying i ran a hell of a lot of placings in them obviously lofty striker you ran two or three just just off the main the main um groups in in the group ones but to get the other to get another new market which um sort of broke the record of of the harold badger and the ollie um to to stand alone in in a prestigious race like that um yeah it's very humbling and you haven't
Speaker 2forgotten where you come from regularly you go back to tassie froggy when you probably don't need to so why do you
Speaker 7do that i've always i've always had the opinion my old man gave me some advice very early on he said just don't ever forget where you came from so i uh obviously this time of year i i didn't go back sort of through winter but obviously this time of year the uh the carnival's starting to to crank up again now and over the last few years we've seen that tassie they they can produce some nice horses so there there's a few over there that i've i've been managed lucky enough to get on um so i look forward to their their carnival and there's a couple of their trialing today which they'll kick off in races over here so yeah it um it works it works out very well for me and um as i've always said it doesn't matter i've got a saddle i'll travel so it doesn't matter where i've got to go to write a winner i'll uh i'll go
Speaker 2who's the most exciting horse that you reckon is racing in tassie at the moment froggy i
Speaker 7think i think the philly that um that that i won all the all the um mares races on last year of course is star farrow red sonaya um she she looks exceptional um there's a philly trialing today that's very fast she won at caulfield only a few months ago swift force for for the keys and and scotty brunson she's trialing this morning she'll she'll kick off in a race over here so she's very fast if we can contain her speed i'm sure she's got a black top winning her over here for
Speaker 2sure yeah can sonaya what can her her level be when she comes over here
Speaker 7i don't really know it's um she she just she just kept improving last preparation so she's obviously not going to run in the spring here but she'll be ready to go to the uh i think she'll try to go back to back in the carpet charge which is at devonport in january and then um i don't know she could probably get to a race like uh like the sangster or something like that in adelaide how many
Speaker 2more years left in your froggy because you it seems like like from afar you could ride for another 20 30 years froggy
Speaker 7well my body's really my body's really good so it's um and like i said i've never had an injury so i think that like what do i go there 52 yeah how old are you i'm 41 so yeah i would think i've still got a good 10 years in me barring injury um and i mean it's um there's a lot of guys back home in tassie actually that sort of that they retired for 10 or 15 years and then made a comeback so um they uh obviously they've had injuries throughout their career but i think that's the main thing just try and stay healthy stay fit and while you're riding what isn't getting
Speaker 2rides um there's no reason to stop and how many how many kids you got these days froggy
Speaker 7got five boys mate yeah and one of them which is the little fella that wants to be a jock yeah that's rain he's uh he's he's just turned nine so he's got six years to go before he can kick off so you'll you'll you'll be around there'll
Speaker 2be a father son rule there yeah yeah like uh lebron and bronnie
Speaker 7james um um no he he he's right into it so um it um it's it's something to look forward to but my oldest too like um i don't know if i'm going to be able to do it but i'm going to be able to do it i'm going to they uh they got a duck to get out the door these days so they're um they're going into they're going into big big men now so um but they all play sport which which sort of gives me an outlet away from racing so it's it's something that i uh i look all look forward to on the weekend will you move back home
Speaker 2mark you finish up your racing career or is victoria home now for
Speaker 7you victoria is definitely home um and and obviously when um when it's time to hang the boots up um if you ask me i'm going to say i'm going to say i'm going to say i'm going to say it's a little bit different than me i i probably might go back but if you ask my wife we'll be on the gold coast so okay i think yeah i think she'll pull rank
Speaker 2there um what do you got to look forward to this weekend what about on sunday there on manukato stakes day yeah it's
Speaker 7pretty it's pretty quiet um but i have picked up the ride on um dan mars horse at limson son yes um he was he was a shade disappointing the other day but um without seeing the final field he's a horse that'll race on speed so i'm going to be on the gold coast so i'm going to be on the gold coast so i'm going to be on the gold coast i reckon uh where the rail is going to be um if we don't get any rain i'm thinking it's going to be a a cricket pitch and with the rail out as far as it is you might take a fair bit
Speaker 2of beating yeah um geez so you you want to be up in front there at caulfield on sunday if that rain doesn't come but there is rain expected on saturday so who knows what's going to happen there but yeah i think
Speaker 7with the rail out as far as it is probably doesn't matter whether it's firm or or wet there's not there's not much track there to work with so it's um it's going to be very interesting it will
Speaker 2be interesting froggy from a jockey's perspective like um how are you approaching it then because for a group one day we've really
Speaker 7never seen this no it's horrible mate it's it's it's it's not what you want as a rider because it it you you'll know after the first couple of races um and and just by by gut feel what with what we've raced we've raced with the rail at majority of places as far as what it is and it just seems to be the same trend every time if you know if you're not in front on the corner you're uh you got no hope so it could uh it could make for messy racing um hopefully it doesn't but time will tell did it
Speaker 2surprise you how well it played then after they moved it to 11 meters on saturday um not
Speaker 7really because it is actually a night well it's it's always been a relatively good track albeit a little bit tighter than obviously your family can do that but i just for me as a rider it was just um yeah it's frustrating because you um early early on it looked like it was going to play real on speedish but then it then it did change throughout the day but um i just yeah it was was not not a good look but um yeah unfortunately sometimes these
Speaker 2things happen yeah it'll be interesting to see what happens on sunday but um anyway we can we can look forward to a big week who you're following in the footy
Speaker 7i'll go for freo i'm going for freo um obviously pos obviously pos um the valet in the room he's best mates with luke ryan so okay got to know know luke ryan a little bit so um yeah there'll be an interest there and i mean bridgman they're um obviously they've got a tasmanian coach so i've got a little bit of soft spot for the old boy as well but um they've they've uh they've been around the dance for a number of years now so it'd be nice to uh to give them a little bit of
Speaker 2someone else a crack well when you walk into that jockey's room mate there's no i think you're the only legend there at the moment um and it's obviously you've got the you've got the certificate to go with it mate so well done um great achievement what you've been able to do for tassie racing's been remarkable and it was well deserved there on friday night so congratulations thanks very
Speaker 7much gareth there's
Speaker 2craig new at their 8 31 we'll take a break and then it's our future show coming up next i'm david gately's and far away and trent mason howdy he's been at track work this morning at course and he's been at track work this morning at course and he's been at track work he's got the latest racing news for us
Speaker 1Join the conversation. Text us on 0499 736 736. Live across Australia. This is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall. Welcome back to Giddy Up. We're in for it.
Speaker 2A special treat here on this Tuesday morning. What about this team that we've assembled for our future show? The one, the only, David Gately. He's even made it into the studio. So it is with a great pleasure to welcome in Gator.
Speaker 8Hello, Gator. Hello, mate. Not a fan of. Getting outside of. Outside of the house. Melbourne traffic and third most livable city in the world, you know.
Speaker 2Yeah. Did you swim here or.?
Speaker 8I didn't swim here, but I swam this morning and then drove the car in. It's nice. How many k's? Oh, we did about four, four and a bit.
Speaker 2Yeah. How long does that take you?
Speaker 8About an hour and 15 with a bit of talking in between.
Speaker 2So you've done four k's, so 20 laps is a k, isn't it? Basically 50 metres.
Speaker 8Yeah, sure. And that's 80 laps. What do you think about? Well, this is a great question. You think about all sorts of things, but ran onto some heels this morning and said, sorry, my brain was in last week's quaddie.
Speaker 2When was the last time you swam four k's, Trent Mason, how was that?
Speaker 9Never. No. No good at swimming. No. Team sports for me. Yeah. Played basketball last night. Did you? How'd you go? Three threes, but I don't want to talk about it. No, no. All right, Steph Curry.
Speaker 2I was a bit of a Djokovic then. Not Djokovic, Djokic. I should say, yeah. Same country. Now, what about Caulfield? You were there this morning. No, I didn't go. Oh, didn't you go?
Speaker 9No, my colleague Andrew Eddy was out there this morning. I thought I'd prioritise coming in here. Well, I appreciate that. Give my time to you, great man. It's going to be interesting, isn't it? The rail out 13 metres. Well, what it does do with the compacted field sizes, the squeeze is on for the Manicato.
Speaker 2Extragalactic looks like she might miss out.
Speaker 9Well, I don't know because speaking to Catherine Coleman there on Saturday, although Galen's son's only rated 100. So, that horse will probably miss anyway. Point Barrow, I think, will miss. 102. I'm not sure if they were planning to back up. So, yeah, 16 have nominated. A field of 13 and four emergencies. That's down to 15. Right on the precipice. So, it's down to 14 now. Hedged. Gavin Bedgwood said he was going to have a look at the Manicato. Wasn't sure, maybe the Gill guy. So, it's going to be touch and go. It's going to be Trent Edmonds and the Connections going to be pretty nervous over the next 24 hours.
Speaker 2Yeah, yeah. So, J-Max probably booked his tickets anyway. Yeah. He'll be here regardless.
Speaker 9Yeah, he'll have some other rides.
Speaker 2Mickey Gatton joins us. Hello, Mick. G'day, G. How are you, mate? Good, thank you. Good to see K-Rising's arrived in Sydney safe and sound. I wonder how many updates we'll get of K-Rising over the next three weeks.
Speaker 10Yeah, hopefully we get one every hour. That'd be good. And, yeah, looking forward to getting back out there and checking him out in quarantine. Just make sure you lock up that Twitter account, yeah?
Speaker 2Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. It wasn't my fault last year, but I'm too nervous to report on him, really, K-Rising. Gator. Yeah, how much has changed since we last talked to you regarding your future place?
Speaker 8Well, I'm still really happy with the Wine Dark Sea Caulfield Cup thing, especially that TMS tells me D-Lane's the pilot. Okay. So that doesn't upset me. We're not on a great terms, D-Lane and I, after the on-display thing, but we're mates overall. Yes, you haven't forgotten about that. Sub-three-hour marathon. Poor D-Lane.
Speaker 2Yeah, the Melbourne marathon's only in a few weeks' time.
Speaker 8Yeah, 10th of October.
Speaker 2Are you going for that?
Speaker 8Nah. No, you've been there, done that. Nah, shorter stuff for me. But, yeah, so that's a good result from that perspective. Green Spaces, who we had, Caulfield Cup, was just fair the other day. Yes. So there's some concerns there. Still happy in Melbourne Cup, although, so I've got to finally trust your instincts there with our double Highwayman's come out of nowhere, a horse we probably want to talk about. Yes, we will. He looks exciting. Yeah. So, yeah, so Cox Plate's changed a little bit. I think the door's open for a good three-year-old.
Speaker 2Hopefully we don't go and have a look at the tickets, because I did have yellow jersey. He was in the paddock. Now, obviously, he hasn't come up this preparation. I think he's got some problems with his feet, so that's why he hasn't been striding out. So he's into, he's sent to the paddock and will be back in the autumn. But there's a few that have really put their hand up, like Saran and those type of horses. I'm pretty sure I had Saran at $34 for a Caulfield Cup. So we're going to try and find you a few winners now. We'll start off with the Caulfield Guineas, which is the start of the carnival, really, after the football season. Trombolt's at $3.60. Blind Race at $4. So it's a competition. The best Sydney three-year-old taking on the best Melbourne three-year-old. What team do you want to be in, Gator?
Speaker 8So historically, the cheat code for this race is the Sydney's best three-year-old just comes down and wins it. It's been literally a license to print money, hasn't it? I think this year's a little different, given what I saw from Blind Race on Saturday. He has a proper seat at the table now. He hadn't even, he'd just trialled when we did the show last time. We mentioned him because he trialled. Brilliantly, I thought. And then two exceptional wins. So all of a sudden, he'd be near top seed if the race was tomorrow for me right now.
Speaker 2Yeah. Mickey Gannon?
Speaker 10Yeah, I agree with that. I think he's got a fair bit of upside Blind Race. Looking forward to seeing what Trombolt does next. The market's pretty much got us surrounded there, Gareth. You know, you work your way through it, we'll probably see in the Golden Rose what a central Europe can do and get a really good indication as to his ability now gets out in trip to a trip that's probably more suitable. What's his $17? Yeah. In this market. So he's probably the one that if you really wanted to gamble on, depending how he went in this, he'll probably wait for a barrier draw for the Golden Rose G, because I think that'll play its part as well. But if he runs top three, I'd imagine he'll shorten significantly in a Caulfield Guineas. Outside of that, it looks pretty thin. So Blind Race should be his favourite.
Speaker 2Under focus? The year-long horse?
Speaker 10Yeah, you make a good point. I think they're pretty much side-by-side. So under focus. I think he's sort of got on the back of Central Europe, and for mine, had probably the better of the two runs in the race. So I think they're probably both around the right price to find out. And you'll both get to see them on Saturday, Gareth. So if you're looking for anything that will shorten, they'll be the two. And I think you just have a look at the barrier draws, do your Golden Rose form there, see how it works out, and whoever finishes in front will probably end up being third favourite. I couldn't possibly have a wall woven there. St. Gothard, leave me out of St. Gothard as well. So. And diameter, remind me about. It was running Saturday.
Speaker 2It is running Saturday, and I want to back it after what I saw there at Flemington.
Speaker 10So the question that I posed to you was there, Jocky's comment suggesting that maybe he wouldn't have finished as close as he would have, just visually probably looked more like he was a red flashing light than what he was. Did you mention that?
Speaker 2Oh, well, I had a quick chat to Andy McIff, and he said, well, Jason pointed out that if he did get that gap, how much horse he had left in him, but he did get held up down the straight. So I think most jockeys might say that when they get held up.
Speaker 8Yeah, we'll never know, will we? I'll ask the great man, Mick. What's the knock on St. Gothard for you?
Speaker 10I believe might be going to a Coolmore.
Speaker 2Yeah, I think he does drop back in distance, St. Gothard. So he's a Coolmore horse. Yeah. I think he's the one to beat on Saturday in the Golden Rose. You like him? Yeah, I like him. Is he better than Guesthouse?
Speaker 8I don't know. 1,400 metres? The thing with Guesthouse is. If they could do a baywalk on him and just go to the front and keep running, I'm really nervous about that. Has anyone spoken to anyone about tactics with Guesthouse?
Speaker 2No, not with Guesthouse, but he did sit behind the leader there the other day, and he did show tactical speed, Trent.
Speaker 9I spoke to. I was at Cranbourne yesterday. I spoke to Michael Ken Jr., because Mick Price is in Sydney looking after the Star Cult, and they are so confident. They are just so confident that he's the one to beat, which is not necessarily that stable. They're pretty measurable. I think they're pretty competitive when it comes to their horses, I reckon. I just think they think this horse is just better than the opposition.
Speaker 2Well, they do like talking up their stallions, Cornwall. You even see Aidan O'Brien sometimes say this is the best horse that he's ever had at Belly Doyle. Yeah, nearly every season. So, I'd love them to. I know, Mickey, I don't know if you can help me out here. Why can't they go to the front with Central Europe to stop him pulling? Just say, all right then, mate, if you want to run, we'll let you run.
Speaker 10Yeah, it's probably just not the way the stable do it, but I understand your sentiment and agree. And it probably gives him his best opportunity to win the race because I think you want to be in front of Guesthouse, who at this stage is clearly better than all of these, Gareth. So, I think that. I'm not sure what the price is that Bet365 are offering for the Golden Rose. He's $11. $11. No, Guesthouse for the Golden Rose. I think we're going $2.75. I'd imagine when the Barry draw comes out and if he draws something like 1 to 6, I suspect he'll start closer to $2.10, $2.20. Yes. And I think he'll win the race, to be honest. I think he's got panels on them.
Speaker 2Okay. So, Guesthouse, $2.75. Guesthouse to win the Golden Rose.
Speaker 10Yeah. Yeah. I know we're not covering that race, but.
Speaker 2No, we just did. Yeah. Well, yeah. $2.75, yeah, we bet $3.65. You can boost it to $3.
Speaker 9So, just on the pre-draw, I think James McDonald is leaning, the male is leaning towards sticking with St. Gothard.
Speaker 2Yeah, I think he is riding St. Gothard, yeah. Gear change? We'll find that out. That is interesting, yeah.
Speaker 8He just didn't run straight, did he, the other day? No. I just wonder if he's a blink of a horse. Did he get checked?
Speaker 2Was it his fault?
Speaker 8Yeah, he did get checked by, well, whatever did run out on him.
Speaker 2Yeah. I don't know. But I know that St. Gothard is important to Coolmore as well. So, this is Coolmore's race. They've got Guesthouse, St. Gothard, and Central Europe. Yep. They play a major, major, they have a major hand in this year's Golden Rose, Coolmore. 8.43, we're going to take a break. You can ask the boys any question you like, 0499-736-736 to join our conversation. on the Garrett Swilson Hound Tech Slide. We'll come back and have a look. We'll look at the Caulfield Cup next.
Speaker 1Live across Australia, this is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 2All thanks to Bet365. This is, of course, our futures show. And don't forget Sunday. It's going to be Sunday, the Manicato Stakes meeting, because Pride of Jenny is back at the races. Taking on Mr. Brightside. Hopefully that rain does come on that Saturday, just a little bit anyway to make sure it's a good four, depending on how many in the race. Like I thought there was going to be four or five, but there might be more. If there's more than eight, you can't have it at the first or second race. So it'll have to be a quaddie league.
Speaker 9Did you ask Sam about Treasure of the Moment?
Speaker 2Yes. Fiend Stakes. She's running. Yes.
Speaker 9So she'll be there.
Speaker 2So it'll be a good little race. Big test for her, isn't it? Yeah. Well, it's D-Day for her in a way. Yeah. So how many horses have you got in the fiend?
Speaker 9I reckon there'll be eight. Eight. Around about that. So that'll be a quaddie league then. I don't think Kieran is going to run any stable, mate. It's a lot of infantrymen that's been nominated and one other, but I don't think. Another Will? Yeah, another Will. But I think he's loathe to run anything to chase Jenny.
Speaker 2Yeah. Yeah. She does make people think at this time of the year, like do we want to give them a gut buster?
Speaker 9Zambardo will be there, which would be good. Yeah. He was good first up.
Speaker 2Brightside, and just to see her and Brightside go at it each other, what a rivalry that's been over many years. Two nine-year-olds. Yeah. Should just have them two, basically. Let's move on to this Caulfield Cup. It's an interesting race because the favourite, Saran, now is nice and short. He has his place now in the Melbourne Cup. He got a half a kilo penalty yesterday after winning the Naturalism. St. George is $8. Eliana, she's 26 into 13. But unless Chris Waller is lying to all of us, then she's not going there. But it's sort of like, I don't know how I describe this, because it's the most common question I get asked, Gator. Is she going to the Caulfield Cup? But no one wants to believe Chris and Connections. Like they can't. Everyone thinks it's the best race for her, apart from the most important people involving Eliana. Coach. Yeah, the coach. The coach says, well, she's a Cox played horse. Yeah. So I don't know how many times I have to say it, but I wouldn't back her for a Caulfield Cup.
Speaker 8No, no, she's not going to be there. It's going to be really hard to win it. Like they're hard enough to win anyway.
Speaker 2Yeah. Birdman at 15. Enver Jarr's at 15. He's Adam Blenko's horse. Half yours 15. She's a hustler 15. Like half yours will go there. I bet you any money that he'll be there. Caulfield Cup. Caulfield Cup. Yeah. Wine Dark say $15. Green Space is $21. You're still with the European Galloper.
Speaker 8Well, I've got no reason to jump off. Certainly with the jockey engagement hasn't put me off. He's still got to get here and acclimatize. But I think the door's wide open this year for an import. These are all good horses. You know, and their favorite. But there was two lengths over eight of them, you know, in the naturalism. So there's that. So George gets a little weight swing back on the favorite Zaran as well. Not that relative weights are everything as Point Barrow proved on Saturday. But it's still a factor.
Speaker 9Yeah. Just for the Zakuma fans out there, he won't be in the Caulfield Cup. So he's going to the Herbert Power on route to the Melbourne Cup. So I thought he was a really good run. He's going really well.
Speaker 2I'm going to chase Ozzie and Kieran. But I don't think they're going to give Zaran another run. If they do. It'll be a turn ball because they can't afford to get another weight penalty. I would think that. Yeah. Why would you do that? I'm like the more I look at this race and I know that he's probably got to improve a little bit. But Stafford for Timo Brian at $21. He's going to be my play each way. And they still haven't booked a rider for him. But he definitely will be there in that Caulfield Cup.
Speaker 10Mickey Gannon. Gee, question. Yeah. Ten ability for Willie Haggis. Is that horse coming out?
Speaker 2No, I don't think so. Is it, Trent? Willie Haggis hasn't. No, that's not coming out. Sorry. Okay. No,
Speaker 10it's good to know. It was $101 and definitely shouldn't have been. So no firm opinion on the Caulfield Cup for me at this stage. But defiantly going to Caulfield Cup. No, he's going straight to the Melbourne Cup.
Speaker 2He goes straight to the Melbourne Cup. So the horse is at the top of it.
Speaker 10Yeah. Wouldn't surprise to see if Uncle Chris changes his mind because we know he's definitely against the, uh, the weight of a Melbourne Cup. But, uh, you'd think still Alien is in line for a cross plate.
Speaker 8He won't change his mind.
Speaker 10I'll leave it to you, boy.
Speaker 2You're all over it.
Speaker 8Yeah. Where's, um, where's Kingswood headed? T-Mass, this is a question for you. Yeah, it's a good question. I thought he was terrific on Saturday.
Speaker 2Yeah, me too. He's Caulfield Cup. Caulfield Cup, $34. Oh, yeah, he is. He is Caulfield Cup. $34. Yeah. Each way. You're telling me that I should have something on?
Speaker 8I thought he was terrific. He rode a hot speed. He traveled well for a long time and was beaten by the A-graders. You know, I think, um, I'd be a bit excited if I had a share in that.
Speaker 2And he can handle any conditions as well. All right, then. That'll do me. Kingswood each way. $34. We'll take a break. We'll come back with plenty more. This is our future show on this Tuesday morning.
Speaker 1This is Giddy Up. With Gareth Hall.
Speaker 2Gareth Hall with you. Trent Mason. Howdy. David Gately. And also, of course, Mickey Gannon for our future show. There's plenty of text messages coming through on the Gareth's Horse & Hound text line. 0499 736 736. If you've got a question for the team. Is Asterix in any cups? Loved his run on Saturday Gator.
Speaker 8Yeah, I thought he was terrific on Saturday. I gave him a hope there at huge odds. And he ran really well. He just found two better. But he had 58 and a half. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. He gets the weight relief. So he gets a weight advantage on Zahraan there as well. So it can make a case. Good little horse.
Speaker 2The Euphrates that was impressive second up Gator.
Speaker 8Yeah, he was good, wasn't he? He's got, um, I like the way they rode him. Sustained speed from the front. That's what I'm thinking is going to be his best asset, especially as an, as an endurance athlete. So, um, he's not going to do a might and power, but he could go forward and run well in the race.
Speaker 2Gee, when does O'Brien's horses get scanned and arrive, please? Um, I think most of them, Trent, have been scanned. And I think they, um, well, the first shipment of international, so that'll be, you know, he's two Caulfield Cup runners in Starford.
Speaker 9September 27. Yep.
Speaker 2So it's after the grand final, basically.
Speaker 9Yep. Starford, Omni-Man, Small Fry, Kislyar.
Speaker 2Yep. So they'll arrive.
Speaker 9Along with Point of Law for Kieran, Amphijar for Roger Varian and Wine Dark Sea.
Speaker 2Yeah. And they've all passed their scans. My understanding is all of those horses that Joseph O'Brien wants to come out, um, they have been given the green light. So there you go. So you, if you like one of Joseph's horses, you can back them with some confidence. Obviously they're going to be scanned once again. Yep. Yep. Um, so we'll just keep. Keep an eye on that. We'll get through.
Speaker 10Yes. Caulfield Cup. You've, um, just sort of. Yes. Uh, lit a fire underneath me there a little bit there. So you're afraid he's $13. Yes. Uh, Juro Kibo will meet it at this stage. A kilo and a half better at the weights if they go this way with that horse. And it was only beaten less than a length there on Saturday. The way the track play probably suited, you're afraid, is a bit more. Getting $51. Okay. Juro Kibo. Okay. Because $13, you're afraid he's. So I think you should have a bet on Juro Kibo. Something small around like $51. There you go.
Speaker 2You'd love a, you'd love a wet Caulfield Cup, wouldn't you? Yes. Um, so we'll take that on board. So we're backing Juro Kibo and Kingswood so far at a price. Um, Trent, how can dark body qualify for the Caulfield Cup now after the weekend scratching? Uh, yeah, that's a good question. A bit of power. Yep. Yep. You'll have to go there, but it's not ideal. No. Um, a few more questions coming through. Any chance Middle Earth and the Caulfield Cup has returned well and horses up in the weights have a good recent record in the race. I don't know if they'll go to a Caulfield Cup. I don't know if they want to get penalized. The Melbourne Cup is their big dream and their big aim.
Speaker 9Yep. Um, just 086, as I mentioned earlier, Zakuma, um, don't back that horse for the Caulfield Cup. He won't get in. He's going to the Herbert Power and then the Melbourne Cup.
Speaker 2Yeah. Um, a lot of text messages about Aliana. Well, I don't think they can't do, like if the main aim for Aliana is the Cox Plate, they're not going to go to the Caulfield Cup because Chris Waller won't back her up in a, in a, um, in a Cox Plate the week after. So I know everyone wants her to go there. Well, most of us, or most of the punters that I talked to here on Kitty, I wanted her to go there. Um, but it's not going to be the case. I think half yours is, because when you have a look at half yours, this spring carnival go to 57 and a half in a Caulfield Cup, wait for age in a Cox Plate and then 59 in a Melbourne Cup. Um, if I said to you, which is the race that is most winnable for him, what would you say
Speaker 8now? Caulfield Cup. Yeah. Yeah. Especially with the way it's a bit compressed, like carrying 59 over two miles. I know he won the race very well last year, but you've got to be significantly better than them with 59. And, and I don't think he's that.
Speaker 2Yeah. There is a case he might not win another race.
Speaker 8Well, same with every horse.
Speaker 2Yeah. Yeah. Because he's a great horse and he won't be far off them, but now he's at weight for age and, um. He's been penalized for winning a Caulfield and Melbourne Cup, which you should be. Should be. Yeah.
Speaker 9Yeah. And if he doesn't, I'm sure the conditions was disappointed. They're like, what a run they've had with his horse.
Speaker 2Yeah. Job done. Yeah. I wouldn't care if my horse never won another race after they won a Melbourne Cup.
Speaker 8If I could go to Teranguin and Ballarat and win, I'd be. Yeah. Yeah. Let alone a Cup style.
Speaker 2We'll take a break. We're going to come back and we're going to preview. I don't know how long it will take us to preview the Everest, but that will be the race next on the agenda here on our future show on Giddy Up, all thanks to Bet365 here on this Tuesday. Tuesday morning. Text us.
Speaker 1on 0499 736 736 live across australia this is giddy up with gareth hall welcome
Speaker 2back to giddy up this is our future show plenty of text messages coming through so we'll get to all of them i promise you as the morning unfolds 0499 736 736 giddy up brought to you by bet 365 it's never ordinary when it's brought to you by bet 365 what's gambling really costing you and the manikato stake sunday the 27th of september group one action there at caulfield tickets at 25 ticket tech let's have a look at the everest carding risings arrive so he's here in australia and he's safe and sound we saw him trot around this morning there at canterbury and he is a dollar 36 yep um you can boost him to a dollar 44 with bet 365 guest house nine dollars tempted nine dollars jolly star 15 angel capital 17 he looks like he'll be there babe whack at 17 giga kick 26 headwall at 26 jimmy star at 26 ninja's got a start at 26 dollars and then you go out to horses like beadman and saint gothard and live another day at a big price here gator you put this horse into your multi anyway a dollar 60 was he or dollar 50 very astute yeah value there yeah their um value so you you shot well yeah no i'm
Speaker 8good like that this is the horse that ran 106 the other day yeah yeah okay just checking
Speaker 2yeah it was at chart 10 okay yeah
Speaker 8and no other horse ever done anything no not even got close yeah yeah just
Speaker 9quickly g there was a text or question about juji kibo they're going to accept today for caulfield
Speaker 2cup yep so he'll be there so if you're taking the 51 then um you're in play yeah you're in play um so what do we do with the everest hop like surely there's going to be a market out surely with bet 365 we'll have to talk to brayden so it gives us something to talk about um who finishes second hmm
Speaker 8well that was the brownlow chat wasn't it yeah you know so those are backing bond favorite out yeah or um uh smith got to run for their money for sure but um yeah so it i think it's a good way to probably look at the race because it does look a one horse race i mean he won it last year effectively underdone you know not only is he better this year they're going to train him to peak for the race yeah so i just don't understand how they get anywhere near him it's
Speaker 2like how i don't know how i describe it to people like um for the punters out there it's sort of like lebron james coming to play in the nbl oh yeah or someone like a kevin geran or someone like that
Speaker 9how good did he look getting off the truck yesterday yeah like it's just over yeah and
Speaker 2last year to last year yeah yeah like last year they just they he was a lot softer last year like zach didn't let him go on that lead-up race trialed like an average horse yeah um they obviously did too well at canterbury as well because that was his first time traveling away and he just enjoyed life too much there at canterbury i feel him yeah yeah um beautiful place of the world yeah yeah yeah and um and zach will trial him in a few weeks time and he'll probably play he'll he'll say he tried only fair okay just to take the pressure off him but um i hope they let him go there on on everest day because it'll be something else i can't believe
Speaker 8he's a dollar for it's ridiculous
Speaker 2and if he could talk it should be nick dacos odds yeah if he could talk he'd be probably thinking who the hell like i'll watch the shorts on the weekend and say i'm competing against mazu who if he could talk to him doesn't even want to go to the gates if
Speaker 9there is one gator who's his biggest challenger and gano
Speaker 8tempted gato you first i mean okay i'll go first then because i started the sentence but um tempted ran second last year she's going every bit as well she comes up in the weights but she's an obvious one we don't know how good guest house is yet but um everything else is six to seven
Speaker 10lengths off i
Speaker 2think yeah gano yeah if i if i'd
Speaker 10have a bet it would be guest house because we know that you know tempted can't beat kaiying rising home and we're not sure of guest house ceiling but that seems ridiculous because he'll be putting the race kaiying rising so it is interesting uh what's the only element of risk is a horse coming overseas potentially getting you know falling ill that's about it so you work out the odds on that and that's about
Speaker 2the only way you get beat it's a dollar 36 i guess um well probably more like
Speaker 10a dollar and five
Speaker 8yeah i remember doing form when black caviar race and that was that was what i would say like what beats her cardiac arrhythmia yeah not even that yeah she couldn't even get beat when
Speaker 2she did two hamstrings at ask it that's how good she was people forget about that maybe he didn't really want to start a bit she did a hamstring yeah she
Speaker 8traveled with the wetsuit oh that's good
Speaker 2so you saying bolt you go and win a hundred meter sprint but you've you've you're twang your hammy
Speaker 8against world-class athletes because they all won group ones after that behind her didn't they
Speaker 2i think like i think when you look back on that luke nolan was so unfairly criticized because he knew that horse better than anyone he was looking after her and maybe like like and she still won at the end of the day the only job is to win the race right correct yeah just um so looking at the slot holders for the everest this year the hong kong jockey club kaiying rising the tab gator you'll have to lock up something pretty early now pretty shortly i would imagine early but yeah yeah headwall for tab well i'm hearing that but would they be happy there on saturday i think he's okay he was okay gator would you think of his run
Speaker 8yeah the race shape was dead again yeah you know he ran okay he doesn't really know how to run a bad race that horse so at least he's going to be in that yeah third to sixth chat
Speaker 2chris waller jolly star um max whitby neil wear it and cole madden steve mccann they went with briasa i reckon they'll give briasa an opportunity to see what he's going to do and i think he's going to be a good horse in the um in the premiere mulberry when i was hearing the discussions there with this slot um savvy hell yeah um english i don't know cool more guest house yulong probably angel capital james harren will probably sell his slot yep um and if kiki runs well i reckon he'll get a slot like jonathan mung's will just buy one any three-year-olds um
Speaker 9paradoxium no unless yulong does a deal but why would
Speaker 2you want to go if you're a three-year-old like you sacrifice maybe a cool more when you can't win yep but i talked to god modcaster about that i don't know if and even if you finish second behind carling rising what does that do to your value it's interesting when he said that it's worth three times as much to um um what's the autumn boy if you want a a golden eagle than a cox plate yeah i found that interesting i did too um newgate gpi racing they try to get headwalls so they're in the market so beatman's been ruled out no they're not okay he's ruled out and codolphin have got tempted so baywack will get a slot if he runs well on the um what about the king charles talking about short price favorites like is she gettable the mighty autumn glow she's a dollar 25 she's alibi is not there at four dollars pride of jenny's not there at nine char wolf at 11 like char wolf's the big danger um and then you go to our like a headley grange at 17. most of these horses in the market won't be there like mr brightside he might be there brightside tom kitten at 17 gringotts at 20 to 1. like is she is she beatable
Speaker 8gator oh look it wasn't the win of the year no on saturday but i just don't think she's a natural leader no you know she wouldn't be the first athlete in history to um you know to be ridden outside of what's ideal for her and and you know she still won the race she was still quite strong winning the race so um is she beatable off that uh well i look put it this way if she's a dollar 25 and kaying's what a dollar 35 if you gave me a free thousand there's no betting which way i'd go with it yeah oh
Speaker 2yeah yeah yeah um gano yeah really
Speaker 10good point um look vulnerable more than kaying rising a hundred percent char wolf gets a really like if he gets a really good setup and his on yeah rain affected rain affected track blinkers on you need some speed in the race and i'm not sure where that's going to come from so there's your big question marks but yeah i'd say your gator is absolutely now that kaying rising should be shorter than autumn glow if you're comparing those um but then what price would you want to take child without seeing that sort of setup maybe 21 because who knows if you're going to get that it seems highly
Speaker 2unlikely yeah well if you're a child joe pride believes he can beat um autumn glow with the blinkers on and if he does get some give in the ground um he thinks he's a big chance he thinks he'd be a bigger chance if he can um persuade tony otterbrader said pride of jenny down the highway oh yeah which would make it really interesting but that won't happen i don't think so um would you have gone to a cox plate or a king charles with char wolf because he hasn't proven himself at two thousand meters
Speaker 8yet oh i thought that was mick um the uh yeah look he's um i think that's a that's a salient point that he's he's big a plus performances have been at 1600 over there the cox plate this year is probably gettable though yep you know with sir delius is a hot favorite he's a very very good horse but he's not via sistina no he's not romantic warrior is
Speaker 9he he's good flemington horse and if he got a bit of cut in the ground are you going to be a great chance in the cox plate at flemington the key to him is
Speaker 2having pace in a race and whether we'll get that with autumn glow in the race and it might scare a few off in the king charles so i think that's the key to his success and he's just got to try and chase wherever part of jenny goes and unfortunately she's coming towards the end of her career and she um will be going to an empire rose and unfortunately he can't can't qualify for a race like that
Speaker 8charles send chief
Speaker 2little rock yes yeah yes yes just trying to
Speaker 9answer as many as i can g off the text regarding horse placements because let's be honest that's what i'm here for uh there was one about attrition just spoke to mitch friedman via text hill stakes is his main name race he won in sydney two years ago yeah terrific terrific run he was terrific
Speaker 2100 to 1 wonder what they'll do with linderman we'll get to him in just a moment whether he goes to a turnbull cox plate or they go back to sydney for the hill stakes um would autumn glow be any chance against carrying rising fellas we'll never know but i would have loved to have seen her take him on in an everest um but he would have started what price what would the market be if they said that they were going to an everest with autumn
Speaker 8glow oh she'd be second favorite clearly yeah
Speaker 2it'd be probably a
Speaker 8dollar fifty yeah but yeah i think and it should be what four dollars yeah um thoughts please and
Speaker 2live another day in the manicato to place two dollars into the mighty lines of dollar 66 that's from bernie track
Speaker 9conditions are key here with all of another day yeah tom dagny tom davinick has made it very clear he doesn't want a good three or you know he wants a bit of give in the
Speaker 2ground yeah how is autumn glow shorter in the market than carrying rising well the lads have just explained that they don't know we're carrying rising in the race would be interesting to see what that win slash place pool total is outside of the whirlpool it would be interesting but at least he has to pay a dollar oh five with the whirlpool high gator and co my horse ran shocking on saturday and the trainer got a vet to look over it and said it was the fifth horse to pull up lame due to the track um so it was a firm track there be interest yeah so what's the name of the horse i don't know okay yeah it's helpful yeah um hey guy my top picks for the big three are envajar serdelius and stinger glass in a melbourne cup we'll get to that um attrition goes to the hill stakes could you please ask trent how much omni man needs to do to make the caulfield cup and get his rating up i think he's in the caulfield cup isn't he omni man
Speaker 9no i don't know if he is yeah i don't know if he is so um i remember speaking to um albert bosma from uh what are they called again the tissue colors go racing go racing thank you uh and i think they said caulfield cup it's uh melbourne cup and i think they said caulfield cup it's uh melbourne cup is the the main goal there so he might not even he needs to go to geelong yeah july i think they were saying i think just from memory they were saying my horse
Speaker 2is in the caulfield cups is that oh starford yeah hey we'll take a break we're going to come back and have a look at a few of the other features the melbourne cup will preview that race next year on giddy up for our futures show join the conversation text us
Speaker 1on oh four double nine seven three six seven three six live across australia this is giddy up with gareth hall welcome
Speaker 2back to giddy up some breaking news the mrc just released their uh media release regarding their review into that track on saturday and it reads the melbourne racing club's review of last saturday's underwood stakes meeting has found that the track as presented was safe for racing and that the turf plugs used in preparation of the track had been correctly installed the review concluded that the jockeys were incorrect in their view that the turf plugs made the track unsafe and that the decision to move the rail out four meters shortly before the first race was unnecessary melbourne racing club ceo tanya fullerton said the findings of the club's review were clear our review found no safety issue with the caulfield racing surface the turf plugs were correctly installed the track as presented was safe for racing and the rail did not need to be moved the track subsequently raced safely and fairly throughout the meeting dozens of people said that the track was safe for racing and that that the track was safe for racing and that the track was safe for racing and that the track was safe for racing and that the track was safe for racing and that the track was safe for racing and exactly the same turf plugs remained on the other sections of the track that continued to be raced on after the rail movement with no issues from jockeys and horses the jockeys clearly did not understand how turf plugs work the jockeys claimed that being able to pull the tops off the plugs somehow showed that the track was unsafe is nonsense turf plugs are routinely installed a few days before a race day and are always able to be physically pulled up as grass plugs take at least two weeks to bind with the rest of the turf profile this has been standard practice for over 25 years and is not a problem they remain in place while horses gallop over them with no risk to jockeys or horses so that is a strong worded statement there by the mrc so we mentioned this yesterday it was he said she said basically the mrc believed that they presented a track that was safe the jockeys and racing victoria stewards deemed it unsafe so that's why they moved out the rail an extra four meters so that's a review i don't know if it's an independent review or review by the mrc um but they're standing by their team um and that is a ceo that has led from the front in a way um sticking by her team standing up for her team saying that the stewards and the jockeys got it wrong there on saturday
Speaker 9trend yeah it's an interesting one isn't it i just wonder if they're so out of it that it was safe they've come out swinging
Speaker 2that is how much did
Speaker 9they stand their ground and say we don't need to move the rail like this is okay yeah that's
Speaker 2what i can but i think when the situation with all of that is that when the stewards arrive on track they are in control of the meeting so it's their decision if they deem a meeting or a track service unsafe then they call off the meeting regardless of what sam bennett's and tanya fullerton at the mrc say so um so they own the track basically it's their decision after rob montgomery had a chat to the to the jockeys and they were concerned then they made a decision to move the rail out um so yeah and at the end of the day as well the jockeys if they feel unsafe riding on a surface then you've got to listen to them because if something happens and you didn't listen to them then there's all sorts of problems everybody
Speaker 8involved yeah no they got a strong seat at the table and rightly so um they have to be listening to and and they don't need to be turf experts to have a concern yeah they just they ride the
Speaker 2damn horse that's where the gray area is because the mrc um are defending their track and as as tanya fullerton said it was unnecessary to move the rail okay
Speaker 8here's a question then where's the rail this sunday now then 13 yeah but still oh why yeah i'm gonna go back to the true now yeah
Speaker 2and that's what like when you talk to people there's only one lane they moved it out four four meters so why did it come out 11 meters so we might see if we can get tanya fullerton on and ask her that very question
Speaker 10we'll change yeah i do remember and trent probably better pick me up on this but there was a wasn't there a review uh of the track not so long ago a few years ago and they basically came out with a straight bat and said it's just play on from here it was like full support of the board sort of stuff similar to what we've
Speaker 2seen today uh how long ago i don't know i can't recall i'm gonna go two
Speaker 10thousand maybe two years ago i don't remember i don't remember what happened yesterday yeah it just seems like a bit of a theme there so it'd be interesting like it doesn't seem like an independent review but anyway just just uh asking the questions
Speaker 2well as as i said yesterday um there was a lot more to play out on this yeah and it's difficult to have an opinion on it when you're not there and i'm no track expert um but there's track experts there and they've got a big team there marcy sam bennett's michael's suey they've got a few people looking at that track and then to say well they got it wrong by saying that it's right to go i think gator's question
Speaker 9is is really important here i base on this statement that we've just been alerted to why is the rail out 13 on sunday and so what
Speaker 2we've got we've got a big issue now in a way because you've got racing victoria and the racing industry um compared to what the mrc think yep
Speaker 8yeah so all i see it is as a learning opportunity so what what did the jockeys and stewards miss like educate them yep so okay this is what you said you found so this is why it's safe even though you have concerns this is why it's safe but bring up evidence to
Speaker 2support you and i like we we mentioned this yesterday regardless who is right this shouldn't happen you shouldn't have like before a group one meeting we shouldn't rock up to caulfield and have the rail move out 11 meters i think we all agree on that yep yep so you just got to stop that happening and so as you point out it's all about learning and education so where the stewards and the jockeys obviously mrc think they were wrong so educate them on why they were wrong but then the jockeys adamant like that they were right so it's just a it's a really um if
Speaker 10this happens all the time gareth why if you know they say this is something that happens on the regular how many times have the jockeys pulled the pin or made that decision or the suggestion they did like an irregular uh thing to me yeah anyway um
Speaker 2there's the statement so we'll find out some more information i think with the the information i gathered someday when i made a few calls is that it's the stewards that deem where the rail is i think in consultation with the mrc so i would imagine why they that's why the rails out 15 meters or 30 meters i should say um but yeah just away from
Speaker 9that there's another question here around Athelwulf and King Pedro. King Pedro had an infection, so he springs up in the air. Last I checked and I touched base with Matty Smith. Have you spoken to him this week, Matty Smith, G? Yes. Oh, no, last week. Leaning towards the Metropolitan ahead of the Bart Cummings. Correct, he's not going to the Bart Cummings.
Speaker 2Yeah, the Metro for Athelwulf. Is he up to it? We're going to talk about the Melbourne Cup now. Gee, he's exciting.
Speaker 8You'd think he's certainly up to a Metro. At least. Just having a
Speaker 2look at the Melbourne Cup market. Do you want to do the Cornwall? We'll do the Cornwall and then we'll do the Melbourne Cup. Guest House $4.50, Natural Fling $7, Paradoxium $9.00. It's a Tono Glow $9.00. The next episode looks to be back on track. He's at $9.00. St. Gothard at $11.00. I don't know where Angel's Fury is. We might ask Sam Cavanaugh when he comes in. And then you've got Blue Door $15.00 and Boo Bay at $15.00. Omelon at $15.00, who we get to see on Saturday. Who wins the Cornwall? I guess is it Guest House's Cornwall to
Speaker 8lose Gator? Well, I think he deserves to be favourite. I mean, he just ran a track record. First up, we haven't seen him since. We will get to see him on Saturday. He's got to come back to $12.00. He wouldn't be the first horse in history to fail doing that. But most of those that have failed in the Cornwall have come back from a mile when they just haven't had that speed in their legs. So I'm not overly concerned there. I think the Phillies, Natural Fling and the Tono Glow represent a strong danger. I think they're both exceptional and run time to prove that. The next episode was much better at his trial, but he wouldn't be the first horse in history to trial average, then have an extra trial well and still run average.
Speaker 2Yes, yes. You've been all over the next episode, Trent. I have. You've been following him everywhere he goes when he's arrived in Melbourne. I said he might be
Speaker 9the best colt in the land come the spring. That was a while ago. My confidence started to waver after there were a couple of below par trials, but it was good to see him bounce back there, admittedly in jump out conditions last time out.
Speaker 2The only thing with the favourite for the Coolmore, if he goes to the Everest to see how much that, because it took him a little while to get through his first up effort at Guest House, if Carrying Rising runs the time that we expect him to run, what will that do to a three-year-old?
Speaker 9And he was jarry post-race too. Mick Price wasn't happy with him for a couple of days.
Speaker 2So I'd be a little hesitant taking that price about Guest House, even though he's probably the best horse sitting towards the Coolmore because of yeah, you just want to wait and see how he gets through that Everest there, Mickie.
Speaker 10Yeah, spot on. So it was out of my mouth. So I think St. Gothard's the horse that you want to back at this stage around that $11 mark. Guest House, if they go to an Everest, which that's the suggestion, more than happy to sort of risk him here in a Coolmore, whether he even turns up or not, who knows. So St. Gothard, I imagine that is the absolute target for this horse, and we know how good Chris Waller is setting his horses for that target. So more than happy to take the $11 there.
Speaker 8He was a she wasn't on my my spring preview, Saturno Glow with the Oz Racing family, all your great show, but she's my pony now, with a $300.
Speaker 9Yeah. Tales of Time, could he win a Coolmore?
Speaker 8I'd be surprised, but the upside leaves me trepidatious.
Speaker 9Gano, your thoughts on this
Speaker 10Yulong Colt? Can't be very competitive. Just needs to, it's a quantum leap, I guess, from where he's at this stage, so that's probably the query, and I'd just like to sort of go with some of these more sort of hard and proven early figures, but you know what? It's a pretty good horse, Tales of Time. So yeah, if you get a good place for us, Trent, I think that's a good bet.
Speaker 2It's 25 minutes past nine. We're going to take a break, and then we'll preview the Melbourne Cup.
Speaker 1Text us on 0-4-double-9-7-3-6. 7-3-6. Welcome
Speaker 2back to Giddy Up, Gareth Hall with you. The big news this morning, just breaking, the MRC have released their statement regarding their review into the track on Saturday, and they said the movement of that rail was unnecessary. That the jockeys and the stewards got it wrong, and the rail should never have been moved. And it was a strongly worded statement there. By the CEO of the MRC, Tanya Fullerton. So it is going to be a big story, I reckon. At least for the next 24 hours. Because obviously there's an issue there. And it'll be interesting to hear from RV. Yes. And their response to that.
Speaker 9Yes, I'd imagine that will be on my agenda today. Angel's Fury going to the Crockett next.
Speaker 2I say she's still around. Did she have a setback? Don't know. No. We'll ask Sam Cavanaugh. He's about to join us. Let's have a chat about the Melbourne Cup. And with Bet365, here is the market for the Great Race. The favourite is defiantly at $11. Half yours, $13. James J. Braddock's been the big mover since the weights were released on Thursday. Craig Williams booked to ride at $53.5 at $13. Saran at $13. Eliana, $15. Highwayman at $15. Chocolates at $15. Trust Your Instinct at $15. Atherwolf at $17. Stinger Glass at $17. Wine Dark Sea, $17. St. George at $20 to $1. Sakuma at $20 to $1. And then Goody Two Shoes, $26. Hopewell Rock at $26. Small Fry needs to get his way into the Cup. He's at $26. Sons and Lovers at $26. Deacon at $34. Green Spaces $34. Middle Earth, $34. And Point of Law, they tell me he is flying. He's at $34. I don't know if he'll get into a Caulfield Cup just yet. Asterix at $51. I don't think I've missed it. I don't think I've missed any there. I hope he wins at $51. Who do you want to be within the Melbourne Cup, Gator?
Speaker 8Yeah, so nothing's changed from that perspective for me. There's been some emerging and exceptional performances since our last chat and said aforementioned email. But I've got no reason to drop off defiantly from what I saw in the Kugelay, the way he powered away from them. He's just a different horse since they put the gear on him. Trust Your Instinct, a six-year-old but lightly raced. I liked him as well, so no reason to jump off him. Wine Dark Sea, we get to see him. I've seen a Caulfield Cup in a lead-up, so that's he was my original third pick. The one that's emerged is Highwayman, the Northern Hemisphere three-year-old with three neat wins in a row. In the latest, he beat a good one in Enceladus, who just won a Group 3, Gordon Stakes, I think, and one at Royal Ascot. And there were gaps behind and even the third horse, who was 6.7 lengths away, was only five lengths off Goody Two-Choos prior to that, who was obviously beaten narrowly in this race last year. So it's a really good case for Highwayman on a number of fronts. Um, so I'm, I'm, I missed him in the first run through, but he's now on the radar.
Speaker 2Highwayman's an interesting horse because he's one of the most interesting thoroughbreds that I've come across for quite some time. He got beaten 50, 40 lengths, 50 lengths in his first three starts, around that mark anyway, out of sight. He didn't really get going until July, and then he wins a classic, the St. Ledger. He gets 56 and a half. So he's been weighted like Jan Bruegel was after he won the St. Ledger. Yeah. And I remember he had a Brian telling me that Jan Bruegel was a dead set moral if he turned up. Um, so he's got to carry 56 and a half, which would have been 55 and a half really, um, back in the old weight scale. So yeah. And it'd be interesting. I think that, um, I don't know who rides him as well. Highwayman? Yeah. Saffy? No, she won't get the ride. No, I think it would be one of his senior riders, either Dylan or they might use a senior rider. Here they can ride 56 and a half. I think there's a few, a few jocks putting up their hand and trust your instinct. I think it's the big one as well for Joseph O'Brien. Um, the question is Mickey Gannon, Eliana 58. We touched on that yesterday with you. Um, I wonder if Chris Waller will run her or not. I reckon if I was a betting man, I reckon it's a genuine 50, 50 chance at the moment.
Speaker 10Like that's good news because 51, 58 kilos. It's a massive impulse, but I think she's good enough, Gareth. Yeah. Isn't that, that was, yeah.
Speaker 8Isn't that what Makai Bedeva carried to a third Melbourne cup? It is 58 and a half.
Speaker 9No 58. Yeah.
Speaker 8She hasn't achieved what she had.
Speaker 2No. So in the old weights, that'd be 59. And she was a three-time Melbourne cup winner then. Um, or two-time Melbourne cup winner. Um, she won a Cox plate in her final year. So she hadn't won a Cox plate before that, but I think I, and I can't recall who she was competing against in her Melbourne cup of your time, so it's difficult to have an opinion. I should look back on that. But when you handicap that race with the nominations that we got, I don't think he had any other option, but to give her that way, really.
Speaker 9Is the market right, Gata, that she's the best local hope, Eliana?
Speaker 8Uh, look, there were really positive signs on Saturday. Um, on the first up run, it'd be a hundred to one, you know, but there were positive signs on Saturday. Um, I'm looking at history and, and I'm not totally sold yet, you know, uh, many athletes, especially a stayer who has an average first up run historically, they're less likely to go on and win a big race. Plenty have done it, but plenty more have not had a great prep.
Speaker 2So with Chris Waller, I don't think, I think he believes that with the horses that she's competing against like 58, she's probably good enough to win that race, but his concern is whether he can get her, he can get her back after that, like he reckons it's the toughest race on horses, the two miles of the Melbourne cup, he's seen it with Buckaroo. can't pick up his legs after failing in his last couple of Melbourne Cups and whether That will break her heart going forward Carrying 58 That's his concern But that's what the industry wanted They wanted the weights to be raised So they can have more jockeys to compete in the race So you can't have it both ways No you cannot
Speaker 8And I certainly take his point I mean there isn't Most trainers Pretty much all of them Now have a fabulous rapport And understanding of the athlete And he's probably captain of the team So I can see what he's thinking But what he will know Is every horse is different So if that's Jamaica A horse like Jamaica Would just thrive on hard racing I'm not sure Eliana's that
Speaker 9No Not that I'm here for my tipping G But I'm in love with Sakuma I just think this has been a brilliant preparation He got the golden ticket early So Graham Begg's been able to Really do what he wants with him I thought he was super there on the weekend Got chopped out between Zaran and St George Found again Hit the line Good weight I think he's right in it
Speaker 2I'm just trusting my instinct in the Melbourne Cup $15 We'll see how he goes Monica Brown I think he's going to be riding Highwayman Or Trust Your Instinct I think he's He's the number one rider for Joseph I think Safi will get a ride We'll ask her boyfriend Who's about to join us Good timing Yeah and surely If your boyfriend's CEO of Kiramar Racing If you want to stay in a relationship The long distance relationship You say to your boyfriend Well if you want to see me You get me a ride in the Melbourne Cup I don't think it's that hard
Speaker 9Especially after you've just won a St.
Speaker 2Leger Yeah And Monday She should nearly be the face for the Melbourne Cup Here we go There's a heap of questions coming through We'll quickly go through Champions Day Champions Sprint Tempted $3 Autumn Glow $4 Jolly Star $4.50 Baywack $11 The interesting question here is What race does Autumn Glow go to?
Speaker 8The mile race
Speaker 9Yeah the mile
Speaker 2Champions mile Yeah but there's a chance They're thinking about the Champions Sprint Because they want to give her a rehearsal Ahead of our Royal Ascot
Speaker 9They are very keen To have a look at the straight Before Royal Ascot as you said I think it'll be in the Autumn
Speaker 2Okay Yeah So the Champions mile She's what $1.80 That's a good price Yep Yeah She's alibi won't be there Because she'll just go to the Golden Eagle Yep So And then Champions Stakes Is a bit like the Cox Plates Her dealings will be hard to beat Eliana If she wins the Cox Plate I reckon she'll go to the Champions Stakes So she's at $5 Yep Any opinion there Gator Or is it a little bit Watch and see After the other Grand Follies That we've had a chat about
Speaker 8Yeah I wouldn't launch in yet Based on The Ducks are still lining up For that race aren't they
Speaker 2Yep We'll come back and Read all these text messages Plus of course We'll get our staking plan From the team as well For their futures plays For the upcoming Spring Carnival Join the conversation
Speaker 1Text us on 0499 736 736 Live across Australia This is Giddy Up With Gareth Hall Welcome back to Giddy Up
Speaker 2I've got my $100 play So it's Gator So it's Trent And so is Mickey Gannon But we'll get to them In just a moment We'll go through all these text messages That are coming through Jeez there's plenty of text messages Coming through Regarding that statement From the MRC There's only one problem With the CEO claiming That jockeys don't know What they're talking about Apparently Um Um She Should be a horse rider As well Well that doesn't make sense Um A few more text messages Coming through Stinger Glass Coming up for the cup That's right Yep Yeah So it'll be interesting To see how that Japanese horse goes Athel Wolf's my tip I reckon he's a big local chance Does he have to win the Metrop To get into the Melbourne Cup? I would think he would Yeah Will Alden Glow Run in the Champions Sprint? No She'll go to the Champions Mile You understand Like Yes Yep Um Um You guys are kidding Eliana is no chance With 58 in the Melbourne Cup Um A few more text messages Coming through It's interesting
Speaker 10Jay To that To that statement as well Because it's a good point Because most people think That that's ridiculous But Using Dan O'Sullivan's top rate He has every single horse That's uh With a weight here And If you rate her up near To her peak Um She's clearly on top So there you go Something for the punters
Speaker 2Gano thinks Eliana is Maccabi Deaver And very elegant Give it a spell Gano Um Adam Blanco will join us next week To go through the internationals But trust your instinct Is his Um On top selection For the Melbourne Cup I feel like Joseph O'Brien knows He has the right horses After sending out Goody two shoes last year Her form isn't anywhere near that Of the ones that he is sending over This year Maybe last year Was a recon mission for Joseph She's a forgotten horse A little bit Goody two shoes But this is the race that She is Yeah They want her to win She was well beaten there the other day Yeah She needs a dry track As well Are we expecting Jenny To have another start Between the Fiend And Empire Rose Um I don't know if we are I think they would like to But I don't know
Speaker 9She went to the King Charles In between last year

Speaker 1Text us on 0499 736 736 Live across Australia This is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall Welcome back to Giddy Up
Speaker 2Great to have your company Always brought to you by Bet365 It's never ordinary When it's brought to you by Bet365 What's gambling really costing you? For free and confidential support Visit gamblinghelponline.org.au Great to have a couple of guests in the studio Sam Kavanagh that we know well He's the CEO, of course, of Kiramar Racing Hello, Sam Morning, Gareth And Adam Holland is our special guest Because Unbridled is a new What would you call it? It's a Venture Yeah, new venture ownership opportunity That you can get involved with Kiramar Racing And Adam Holland is the owner of Kiramar Racing The man behind it, Adam Thanks for joining us, mate Morning, Gareth Thanks for having me So tell us, Sam What Unbridled's all about
Speaker 13What's inspired you to do it? There's a few inspirations But at the crux of it is We've obviously got a big fan base at Kiramar Racing And a lot of those fans can't afford to get in a racehorse And we wanted to open that up And provide them a way to get involved with us At a different price point to what we usually offer And that Brought about Unbridled
Speaker 2Yeah, so it's micro shares, basically It's micro shares, yeah Yep And has it been successful so far, Adam? How long has it been going for?
Speaker 14Well, we've obviously launched Friday last week And then was generally available to the public on Saturday So it's been an exciting process You know, something that worked closely with Sam on And we've got two horses to start with Which are, you know, very exciting horses One of them will be running in a group three Potentially on Sunday I believe that's the plan Yeah And then we've obviously got a horse Who's targeting the Golden Eagle $10 million race So, you know, a great opportunity for anyone to get involved And I only wish this was a thing when I was in university Plunting away Because I would have loved to have got involved in horses like this
Speaker 2Yeah, so how much does it cost you to get involved?
Speaker 13So, over the bridge is $155 And Amazing Journey, who's going to the Golden Eagle Is $349 Yeah, $349
Speaker 2And that's all you have to pay Yeah, exactly One-off payment, yeah Do you think there's a case where you could go and talk to Like, different owners who've got superstar horses That are going to the Golden Eagle To see if they would be interested In sharing their journey
Speaker 13with thousands of other owners? Well, it's a funny thing Because, obviously, we want to get Unbridled Into the best horses possible And we've obviously chosen a Golden Eagle horse To go with first Or one of the first two horses And with that, you're sort of You're mixing and matching your different types of ownership styles So, but remarkably, we've had very good uptake From those that went into Amazing Journey Outside of Unbridled So, and you'd actually be shocked We've got a nice flow of the business Of people buying, coming through And a bit of a ticker to see who's purchasing And some of the names that come through You'd be shocked Yeah, yeah To see that I don't know whether they're just Just trying to see what it's all about or whatnot But, or supporting us But some of the names on there were big owners That are in the biggest horse we've got So, it was quite surprising And it was interesting And, yeah, it's a good It's going to be a good opportunity
Speaker 2How difficult is it to set up? Because there's a lot of people It's a lot of people thinking like Tough enough This is a genius idea from a stable like yours To start up something like this
Speaker 13Well, I suppose you've got to have Vision You've got to Have money You've got to have a bit of money It's not easy to set up There's obviously different compliance and licensing You've got to go through with ASIC To make it all Yeah, ASIC approved And then you've got to build the software Which sits behind it And holds the funds, the wallet Transactions It's not simple So, I suppose The reason we can't do that Is because you've got Adam, myself And a few others in the team That Kieran gives us the green card To go off and try it out
Speaker 2And how did you get involved? The boy from Manchester
Speaker 14Yeah, it's a funny story really I mean, it goes a long way back To probably when I was in university I didn't grow up around horses or anything I was just a punting and handicapping in university When I was in my dorm in Liverpool And I suppose took myself on a wild journey Out of Manchester And ended up doing a stud course The national stud course in Newmont I did that I did the BHA development program I obviously just finished the Godolphin Flying Start Which was where I was introduced to Kieran Marr Sam Kavanagh and all the team Especially, you know, Jack Turnbull Looks after me well at Cranbourne So, yeah, I've been along a long road But we're here now
Speaker 2So, your journey So, you came through Godolphin Flying Start You're just a punter and a racing fan In the northern part of England Yeah And was this your brainchild unbridled? So, you're basically the face of it now Well, yeah, I suppose
Speaker 14Yeah It wasn't my idea But I remember having a conversation with Sam Yeah When I was with the team at Magic Millions Which is, you know, the start of this year Around the idea And it's something I, you know, I was really excited about I've always thought that we could make racing Way more accessible to people like myself Who would never be able to afford ownership And if we can do that with some real, like, highlight horses That we've got at the moment And bring them into one of the leading stables You know, in Australia But also the world It's such a great opportunity For the fans Like, this is great Like I said before I would have loved to have done something like this When I was in university
Speaker 2It is the way of the future I think there's no doubt about that Because it is difficult to own a horse these days In today's world especially But this gives you an opportunity And an affordable price to enjoy the journey
Speaker 13It is On that, I actually joked with Adam the other day I said, you know, we weren't going to do this business And then you came along We thought we'd do it And he believed me But we were going to do it the whole time But Adam's been a tough guy Terrific find He came to us via Godolphin On the flying start Gave him a crack And he took it with both hands And that's led him to this Yeah, I think more broadly On the economics of what's going on in the world Cost of living, etc I think the bottom end might be Might be feeling the pinch a little bit But they still want to be engaged They still want to go to the races They still want to get the updates And now to get involved in genuine stakes horses You know, they're running in A, a group one The fillies in the group three on stage On Sunday, potentially Or most likely But yeah, I think to align with What's going on more broadly That sort of brought it about And people can stay involved
Speaker 2Yeah And it's sort of two businesses now What I imagine
Speaker 13Yep, yeah So obviously we want to keep them distinct But look, I'm sure that there'll be people That start off in Umbrella Get a bit of a taster And then graduate on to CMR And the true and tried traditional way of ownership Yeah Yeah, but it's a bit of a It's a bit of a lot of work It's a bit of a low ticket It's like, it's like It's a one-off cost It's up front Similar to the MyRacehorse model It's, it's, it's up front You know, once you've paid for it If, I mean, our horses are good horses And they're going to stakes races But if, say it was a yearling You're paying a hundred bucks Say it never makes stakes grade Well, you, you The cost was two years ago Yeah, yeah So it's, it's Yeah, it's like having a bet Alright, then there's a
Speaker 2Heaps of text messages coming through So I'll get to them in just a moment Like Um There's a few asking how they get involved And there's a good question here I'm in charge of our punters club And we want to get involved We have six of us in the club Which share package would be the best to purchase there? So I'll get you to answer that question Straight after our next break here on Giddy Up This is Giddy Up on this Tuesday morning It's great to have your company Still plenty more to come As we get into our third hour On this Tuesday morning Join the conversation
Speaker 1Text us on Overdose - 736-736. Gareth Hall
Speaker 2with you on this Tuesday morning. It is right on 10 o'clock. Our special guest in the studio from Kiramar Racing, the CEO, Sam Kavanagh, and Adam Holland, who's looking after Unbridled, which is a new micro-share business that Kiramar's set up. It's interesting because I think there's going to be, surely in today's world with the way that it is going, I would imagine there could be a few more racing stables that might want to go down this path. But as you point out, Sam, it's taken you a long time to get this up and running and it has cost a lot of money, but it'll be interesting to see if it takes off.
Speaker 13Yeah, it will be. I do think there'll be an opportunity in the future for, say, the industry to create a micro-share software for all trainers to use, something like that. Yeah, I think that's.
Speaker 2Yeah. Possible. A few questions coming through. So that question that was posed just before that ad break, so if you've got a punters club and you've got six people in that punters club, what option would you. So they could probably purchase a few horses, I would imagine.
Speaker 14Yeah, yeah, for sure. I mean, the best thing we have available at the moment, and it's obviously limited to 100 tickets, but we have a package for the Melbourne Cup Calcutta, which is where you join Kiramar and his team along with Unbridled Racing and their team. It's on the eve of the. The Melbourne Cup, so the Monday. And you have to buy a share in each of the founding owner horses, which is Amazing Journey and Over the Bridge. And you have to buy five in total. And I think if I looked before, there's probably. I think there was around 50 tickets left for that. So there's not many. They're going to go very quick, and that'll be a hell of a night.
Speaker 2Unfortunately, no one will be turning up to that Calcutta because we're all at the Rising Sun Hotel for Giddyups, Melbourne Cup Calcutta. It's down the road. Where do you have yours? We're at the Albion rooftop this year. Okay, there you go. Look out. So, yeah, there's plenty of options. And how many do you want to get? How many horses? Will you go to the sales or will you keep buying these tried horses?
Speaker 14I mean, for the time being with the launch, I think tried horses is the way to go about it because, you know, people like a proven product. And you've got a horse like Over the Bridge, for example, running on Sunday who won first time out. I think she put up the same figure as Snapdancer did on debut, which is obviously also a Kiramar horse. Like, people are excited by that opportunity. And then Amazing Journey. You know, he's a proven horse in Europe. He's going to a Golden Eagle. Like, you know, there's not going to be many opportunities where you can buy into a horse who you know is going to target a group one.
Speaker 2It's Safi Osman, your beautiful partner. She'd been booked.
Speaker 13For Amazing Journey? Yes. Tentatively, I think. I don't know if she's had the conversation with the, with the trainer, but, um.
Speaker 2I think she's right to go. We're going to say she's been booked officially today for Kiramar. Um, but what a story that is, mate. You must be super proud.
Speaker 13Yeah, I'm super proud of her actually. It's, um, yeah, I mean, she. She's a consistently good jockey over there. She only gets a handful of the opportunities that, um, that other jockeys get over there, over there, given she doesn't have a job for anyone, um, per se, um, like that, you know, the top jockeys do, whether it's Godolph and, um, Judd Monn, et cetera. They've all got a go-to jockey. She doesn't have a job like that. So I think she punches well above her weight in terms of, um, riding over there and where she sits in the championship over there with such limited opportunity and then yeah, to knock, to knock the. Uh, group one off is pretty special. I mean, you know, like I've heard a lot of people say, you know, right time, right place. Um, you know, lucky, et cetera. It's like, well, Joseph O'Brien, he doesn't, he's not a lucky trainer. He's a superstar. And I think he, he looked at the options and she was the best available. And so he chose her and she delivered. So it's kudos to her.
Speaker 2And, uh, she's been like, it's been front page news over in the UK. Um, as you would know, Adam being a UK boy and like, it'd be great to see you get a ride in Australia. Sure. There's, she could even make goody two shoes white now, I reckon, forget about Wayne Lord. And, um, so there's a chance that she, if Joseph got five or six, surely gives her a start in a Melbourne cup.
Speaker 13You'd think so. She, she rides anyway. She has a bowl of pasta the night before and wakes up 50 kilos. So she should, the, the weights, no problem. It's just, yeah. Whether there's one that is there.
Speaker 2Yeah. Um, what about, um, from a call for the Melbourne cup perspective? Now we know that Adam Holland, who is with Kiramar racing. But he's a boy from Liverpool. He's all over the international forum. Oh, sorry. Manchester. How dare I get that right?
Speaker 14My dad would kill me. Yeah, I know. So we'll take that back.
Speaker 2Whoops. It's like saying that you're from Chris Wallace stable. If you work at Kiramar's, um, so who's the best chance? I'll ask you a couple of questions. Who's the best chance from Kiramar stable to win a, a Melbourne cup?
Speaker 14Yeah. Well, I mean the market, the market speaks quite loudly for Zara and after his performance this weekend, and he's a horse who actually, when I was at Crambon at the end of last year, he came to the stable and it took my eye out straight away because I knew his form in Europe. I mean, you guys might have not known him too, too well yet. Cause he hadn't run on your shores, but he was, he was a very, very good horse. He was second to Amalok, um, in the King Edward, I believe it is the group two at Royal Ascot and it was on quick ground that day. And like, although he can handle quick ground and he goes fine on it. I think like when he was in Ireland, he preferred a bit of give like good ground probably. Um, he'd be the number one. I would say, um.
Speaker 2Okay. Did you get the Aussie Kerr tipped it to us at about $26, I reckon a few weeks back. Did you take that?
Speaker 14Yeah, we had a little.
Speaker 2Oh, there you go. And I had to believe after I thought, Oh, a couple of runs in the winter, but Aussie did talk us into it. So we appreciate that. I've got a question for you. All right. And you've got to be honest with me because we're great mates with Will Bourne and all that. I don't know after this question, we, we, we might not be, but I have some fun with Johnny O'Neill. He sits in that chair. Why would the King sell a horse to Will Bourne? Will Bourne, that's going to win a Melbourne Cup.
Speaker 13Did you, did you not watch the Royal procession up the straight at, I did. So was it, did you not see that where Eileen Marr was sitting at the table that day when they had lunch.
Speaker 2Eileen did, she asked the King to give, um, Kerr one of his better horses because obviously John Gosden prepares, um, point of law that I think we'll get into the Caulfield Cup or is it 50, 50? Yeah, point of law. I think he'll get in. So, um, can he win a Melbourne Cup? Or a Caulfield Cup?
Speaker 14He can certainly win a Caulfield Cup. I would have thought like he's, he's only had a few starts and like, I was actually at Newmarket the day he won the group three, the Bahrain, um, trophy. And he actually improved massively from his run at Ascot. He was a bit unlucky at Ascot as well. And, um, he beat a pretty solid field, like Galliam ran in the St. Ledger. Um, and like, he's always been a pretty well talked up horse, a Galloway horse. Um, and I think that, you know, elsewhere in the field, there was a few that he had to turn around the form with, I think there was a good golfing horse in there. The name slips my, uh, my mind right now, but you know, he had to overturn the form at Ascot and he did that in good style and he looks impressive that day. And I'm, I was quite surprised they managed to get him because it's hard to get a horse off John Gosden. No, you don't, you don't do that. And the king. Yeah, exactly. Yeah.
Speaker 13So the king is, the king is pretty straightforward these days. Yeah. Mrs. Marsh is pretty close.
Speaker 2Yeah. Eileen, she can take a bow. She should have got a free share for getting the deal done. Um, who's the best, who's the best international outside of Kiramar in your eyes?
Speaker 14Best international coming to Melbourne, coming to Melbourne. Yeah. Do you know who I'd actually give a big shout to is, um, Hopewell Rock second in the E ball. But if you watch the race back, the jockey dropped the whip in the final strides and he kept going. And I, I am a strong believer. He would have won that race had the, kept the whip in his hand. He's about $34 shot. I was just looking at sports, but before he qualified
Speaker 2for the Melbourne, you're looking
Speaker 14at bet three, six, five.
Speaker 2Yes. Yeah. You're working. Yeah. Bet three, six, five years. Yeah. Come on, Adam. Um, you should be better than that being the. Salesman that you are these days.
Speaker 14I don't have an account with them at the moment. No. Well, we'll get your account. Don't worry about that.
Speaker 2So Hopewell Rock. Yeah. Um, that's Watson racing. That's the first runner that I'll have in this country. Jimmy Doyle's been booked to ride.
Speaker 14Yeah. Um, well, yeah, I thought there was talk about Zach Lloyd potentially. I did hear that too. Yeah. Because that came out over to George's when I was there at the end of George Bowie.
Speaker 2Yeah. Um, so what about any of Joseph horses?
Speaker 14Um, yeah. Trust your instinct. Yeah. So he was, he was a big eye catcher earlier this year at the Cora and then also in the Irish state ledger the other week where I thought it was a very solid prep room for, for coming straight over to here. Um, yeah, I'd give him a very strong shout.
Speaker 2Pride of Jenny. She's the favorite horse. I think that, um, in Kiramar stable for me, she is anyway, will she have another run after the fan or she'll go straight to the empire race?
Speaker 13Yeah. I heard you speak about that early. I'm not sure the trance, but I would say she'd go straight there. She runs very well, no matter when, when or where they run as she runs.
Speaker 2Well, I don't think you'll be. You're going to the King Charles with her, even though the Joe pride desperately wants you to go there with char Wolf. Um, who's the best chance for Kiramar to have a big group, one winner in your eyes over
Speaker 14the spring, over the spring. Um, that's a good question.
Speaker 13The next episode in Cornwall. You reckon he's back.
Speaker 14Yeah. I'll tell you what, we'll go amazing journey in the golden Eagle.
Speaker 2You won't be betting. She's alibi surely.
Speaker 14Does she go there?
Speaker 2Oh, okay. That's got me thinking. Yeah. As well. Cause I've heard a few whispers, but I'm too scared to say it on this show.
Speaker 14But since you bring it, I think she will, I think she will go, but I would agree with what you were saying for about 2000 meters.
Speaker 2So training performance, it'd be a great training performance.
Speaker 14And I think she's definitely the best horse in that market. Um, at the moment, but you know, I'm of the opinion that we've racing the further the distance they have, the more time they have to sort themselves out in the race. And there's more time to, you know, overcome trouble. Let's say, I think, you know, Randwick, you want to be on the front end, like if she even just doesn't get in their posse somewhere, maybe she'll have a bit of trouble. I'm thinking $1.70 about a race that's like, you know, over a month away. Yeah, but she's been so
Speaker 2much better than her opposition. Yeah, she has.
Speaker 13She's got wings. If anyone can freshen one up to bring them back, it would be Pete. It's Pete Moody, yeah. But if she bolts up in the 2000.
Speaker 2$10 million on the line. Your old man, your old man talks to Pete Moody all the time.
Speaker 13Does Pete need the Kanga?
Speaker 2Well, I think Fred Novak, he doesn't mind the Kanga. But in saying that, there could be a bonus. Someone might give him a bonus.
Speaker 13They're not scared to take any race on that, I would say.
Speaker 2Well, they could just treat her like a standard bred and just go like might and power, Cox Plate, and then back her up into the Golden Eagle.
Speaker 14I'd really like her for the Cox Plate. If she went there, I think she'd win.
Speaker 2Yeah. It's going to be a great carnival. I think there's superstars everywhere you look. And there's a few other questions coming through before we let you go. And I've got to get going because I'm running behind time. How do you get like, if you're a young person listening to the show right now, Adam, and you're a boy from Manchester that has just a punter in Manchester, you enjoyed the game and then you got into the Godolphin startup course and then you arrive here in Australia and you're looking after Unbridled, a big business these days that just started in Australia. So what would your advice be to someone young trying to get into this game?
Speaker 14Yeah. Well, enthusiasm. I think that's one thing I'd probably never lacked. Yeah, passion. I absolutely love the game. You know, I could spend hours on form every evening. That's like, that's what I do when I go home. My missus would kill me for that as well. Yeah, yeah. But, you know, enthusiasm, putting yourself out there. You know, it's a game of people who actually want to help you. I've found that in my few years in the industry from, you know, 21 till 24, which I am now, people have always wanted to help me because I've shown like an initiative to get out there. And I originally got on the BHA development. And that was my start. And as soon as I got that, you know, I haven't stopped. And taking every opportunity that comes your way and putting yourself out there is the way to go. People will help you in this game.
Speaker 2And you employ a lot of, like, your racing manager, Riley Morgan, just arrived from WA. And he's, I think he's in his mid-twenties. You're in your early thirties, I think, as the CEO for Kieran. Mid-twenties. Mid-twenties. Jeez, I'm so sorry, Sammy boy. So there's, it's a very young business.
Speaker 13Yeah, well, you've got to stay young. I mean, it's a Kieran philosophy. Like, there's a few races. There's a few reasons why that is. It's, it's, um, yeah, it's young energy. Um, it's, you're trainable. Um, he likes people to come in with a blank canvas so he can teach him or teach them his way. They don't come in with any preconceived ideas or this is how it's taught. You know, I have to do it this way. Um, yeah, young people are probably more open to change. And that's why Kieran is so successful.
Speaker 2So in your mid-twenties, looking after such a big organization like Kieran Marr Racing, are you enjoying it? It's been over a year now. Yeah. I am. Yeah, yeah, yeah. There's always a challenge. What's the biggest challenge in like, has it surprised you, the job?
Speaker 13Uh, it hasn't surprised me, but I'm learning, I learn a lot every day. Um, the biggest challenge is, um, is, is staff. Um, and, and with that, just, um, the lack of staff in Australia in racing, um, I, you know, guys come on your show all the time to speak about it, but people getting into racing, um, riders, et cetera, we don't have a particular program where someone can go learn to race. ride um you can't train them yourself um yeah so that would be the biggest issue but um no there's a lot more good than
Speaker 2there is issues yeah um well it's um exciting really isn't it to have so many young people working in that organization and will born have to be the oldest now would he yes yeah well we wish you the best of luck on bridal just look it up on the website away you go adam um if i gave you a hundred dollars what would you do with it this
Speaker 14week this week or over the bridge on sunday over the bridge scarborough stakes yeah i think she's four dollars at the
Speaker 13moment yeah all right we'll get on thanks for the other one you missed before angel fury yeah what is happening with a little hematoma oh okay she'll um yeah she'll go to the crockett yep and then there's a little more don't think so i think they'll be too quick but there's a little million dollar race at the end of the spring
Speaker 2yes yes for the three-year-old fillies yeah it's called the thoroughbred something like that yeah thanks for that boys all right thanks sam another ceo of kiramar racing and adam holland great to meet you mate we might get you on as a regular because i i do love his passion and enthusiasm you can be our international racing sign that contract with louis clifton out the back of we've done the deal good on your brother thanks gary there we go we're going to take a break we're going to come back with plenty more straight after this this is giddy up all things to bet 365
Speaker 1join the conversation text us on 739-736-736 live across australia this is giddy up with gareth hall welcome back to giddy up
Speaker 2gareth hall with you this tuesday morning now a lot of people asking where we get these giddy up hats from i'm told louis we're in the the the process of working it all out so i'll let you know as soon as they can go on sale um caldi lorio has just um caldi oreo from the mrc has just updated us regarding so the home racing club have come out this morning um with a statement by their ceo tanya fordson and it said basically the jockeys and the stewards got it wrong the rails should never have been moved um to the 11 meter spot there down that home straight on saturday it should have stayed at the seven meters um and then a few of us asked the question then so why is it going out 13 meters then on saturday or sunday for the manicato meeting and um carl's just let us know for the further to our media release this morning we've had some questions from media relating to sunday's rail position the blow provides clarity so the reasoning for the rail being placed in the 13 meter position on sunday for the manicato meeting is that the rail was incorrectly moved out to 11 meters from the home turn to the winning post last saturday this allows fresh ground to race on for sunday's meeting had the rail remained at 11 meters for this sunday it would increase the likelihood of riders leaving the rail across the nine race car the reason the rail isn't moving to the true is to protect the protect the track for the caulfield cup carnival so um it is um some clarification regarding all of that so it's been a big morning um regarding that track there at caulfield once again it's 18 minutes past 10 got a couple of very special guests joining me now here on giddy up taylor childs and nathan rose now taylor is racing victoria's workforce development program jockey coach and jockey nathan rose is rv's track work rider development coordinator and a former jockey of course and there's the ride to time series and state championships happening this weekend which is exciting for so many young riders they'll get a chance to compete on the weekend and um taylor and nathan join me now first of all nathan thanks for joining me thanks for having us and taylor hello to you hello we might get a little bit closer to the microphone yeah so we can hear you so um guys tell us a little bit about the track work rider development coordinator and a former jockey of course taylor is racing victoria's workforce development coordinator and a former jockey about this ride to time series what's it all about nathan oh taylor you can tell us
Speaker 15yeah um so ride to time it's a program run through pony club victoria um racing victoria um sponsor it and it's a great initiative that we have it's um all about a grassroot program to get young people a bit involved into our industry yeah um they're pony club kids and it's a competition that they have where they compete over a thousand meters on a racetrack and um yeah it's all about optimum time so getting to a certain pace and um whoever can get closer to that time wins and so
Speaker 2how do you qualify then so where have they been competing at to try and make it into the final
Speaker 15yeah so um there's lots of state qualifying events so i go around to different pony clubs to teach them a bit about the competition and you know a bit about it and then um those riders are able to try and qualify for the competition so um we have about 20 riders coming to cramble on friday night and yeah it'll be a really exciting day for them
Speaker 2all and so it's on grand final leave at south side at cranburn there friday so that's where the final will be conducted because usually it's at mooney
Speaker 15valley yeah that's right so yeah usually it's at mooney valley but um yeah this this time it's at cranburn um under the lights which will be pretty exciting for them and um yeah it'll be a great
Speaker 2atmosphere have you seen obviously these how what are the age of
Speaker 15these riders um so they're from i think any between probably 8 to 24 years old so they're probably about 18 to 24 years old so they're about 18 to 24 years old so they're probably about 18 to 24 years old so they're probably about 18 to 25 i think okay so a broad range
Speaker 2and have you seen people go on there and get into the industry from this this this series yeah there's
Speaker 15actually um been a few even the jockeys riding in the riding ranks now have done ride to time there's a few of them um and obviously also you know a lot of jockeys go through pony club and it's a great grassroots you know program as sam
Speaker 2kevin i pointed out he runs the biggest stable in this country um the biggest challenge is getting staff and track work riders is a major problem for the majority of stables that i talk to anyway how's it all going nathan in the recruitment of getting not necessarily jockeys but track work riders it
Speaker 16is difficult um there's a lot of different moving parts to it now um you know we really need the support of the industry to back those young riders and give them opportunities um there's certain stables that we work with that are really really good i'll name tiar cow yeah they've got two riders that have sort of just started they're doing our on course ridership and they're doing our on course ridership and they're program with Race Victoria which we offer every week at Cranbourne and Pakenham for students The two students there, they're still riding every week with Wynne Shand on course, but then they're being supported by Ben and Mark Walker that they're also riding every day on appropriate horses and the progress that they've made by having those opportunities is what's making them become riders.
Speaker 2So how do you get involved in that course then? So if you're listening today and you want to be, and I think there's, I get a few text messages on the Garrett's Horse and Hound text line is that they want to ride track work or they want to get involved in the game, but they've never had any experience with
Speaker 16a horse. That's a difficult point is that for entry to it, we need them to have at least a base level. So obviously if you get in contact with us, we're happy to refer you to some people that we're really, that we know within the industry that are great at teaching and supporting young riders and building up a good base that then if they're placed in an appropriate workplace, that they've got opportunities to continue to progress.
Speaker 2Because I think that's like, you can make a good, if you're a good track work rider, you can, it can be a, a job where you can make a good living because obviously if you're very good at, um, a job like that, a lot of the biggest stables, um, would love to have you because it's such an important job for the success of their barn.
Speaker 16Yeah, it is. Um, there's say down Mornington, uh, Cranbourne way, obviously you've got some pre-trainers that operate outside of different hours, the normal track work riders that they work in the morning, they then go to these pre-training places and earn more money. And that's, that's how they earn their living. Um, I know Archie Alexander messaged in last week as well. And he said that his riders, you know, he looks after them and supports them. They get paid a good enough wage. That's, that's their sole, sole job.
Speaker 2Yeah. Um, and, and Taylor, what would your advice be for these younger people wanting to get into the game and how, how, what would your advice be to them to get into this industry, whether it be a, a track work rider or a jockey?
Speaker 15Well, yeah, when I go around to party clubs, you know, I bring my, um, um, tracks, my jockey saddles along and the track pad and they get to put the silks on as well. So, um, you know, I show them that, you know, there's not only a pathway of being a jockey, there's lots of different avenues. Um, you know, you can be a vet, a steward, a barrier attendant, and there's so many other avenues out there. And these kids already have a lot of, um, um, like horse skills and knowledge, and they've already got a step and a leg up into our industry if they wanted to go down that path. So, um, you know, I tell them instead of possibly going for their first job at, at McDonald's or a supermarket, um, they've already got those key horse skills and they can get a job into our industry.
Speaker 2Yeah. So how do you go about, so how do you go about, um, how do you go about talking to the parents
Speaker 15basically? Yeah, that's right. Well, um, I think, you know, once we explain to them, you know, there's so many different avenues and pathways, they don't have to go down the jockey path, especially cause I think a lot of the parents think, oh, it's a bit too dangerous, but you know, it's a, you can um, student, like students go to university, they have a job, um, you know, in the morning at the stables and they go and study. So, um, that's the thing about racing. It's pretty flexible. So there's, um, you know, opportunity there for, for everyone.
Speaker 2Yeah. And what would your advice be to the stables then, um, working with these younger kids and, and, um, obviously giving them an environment that they want to go and enjoy each and every
Speaker 16day? We need them to give them an opportunity. Um, so we have. We have our Stable Start program as well, which we run in conjunction with, um, we run that with different organizations as well. So we've got Equine Studies with Box Hill. Um, I think we had, I think it was 60 come through with the support of Lindsay Park, um, that they weren't their basic horse handling skills and occupational health and safety. So those kids are ready to go into the workplace at a basic level. So we need the industry to support them. Yeah. Um, you know, what gets disheartening for me is. Is that I'm only where I was because people supported me and gave me an opportunity. I was sent an email by a parent of a 15 year old who had approached 10 different stables and they either hand passed them back to Racing Victoria or didn't even respond. So for me, that's really, really disheartening. And, and it's hard when we are in an issue where we need more staff that we need that give and take to support from the industry to bring these people in.
Speaker 2So that doesn't. So why don't they give them the opportunity when there is a, there is a shortage of staff? Is it a case? Is it a case where they just haven't got enough time?
Speaker 16Time is a big thing as well. The pressure that we're, we're not blind to it at Racing Victoria, that the pressures from trainers with work covers, with hours, with staff is just incredible. Um, and then they've got the additional pressures of owners, um, cost of living crisis. It all generally does pile onto the trainer and it is very hard for them to find time and appropriate horses for these young people to learn on and make mistakes. Yeah. Cause that's what we all do. When we start learning.
Speaker 2Yeah. And, um, and Racing Victoria with the programs that they've got of, uh, trying their, their best in a way to try and, um, get these riders up to scratch before they go into a stable. But I guess it's difficult to have them really ready to go.
Speaker 16It is like, again, to, to look at some cases that we've got, we've got a young girl that was at Kira Mars. Um, she was at Cranbourne. She wasn't suitable for Cranbourne. They, she went through our on course. Program. She was there week in, week out. She then went to Fingal for sort of one or two days a week and built up her riding skills there. And now she's out at Ballarat and she's working, uh, in the roundup with the breakers and things like that. So her progression level has only got to where it is now because she's been supported by the stable. Um, there's another one with Mick Price and Michael Kent Jr. Really supportive of this girl. Her base skills weren't great, but she's been a big credit to herself that she's worked hard at the on course lessons. She went out. To a pre-training facility every single day after work and rode there and built up her skills.
Speaker 2Yeah. So. Hi, Gareth. It's unfortunately almost impossible to learn to ride track riding in the country. I've got a degree in equine, equine science and have ridden for 20 plus years. I'm not young, but want to learn, getting opportunity to learn how to ride is super hard. Um, but I guess then you sort of got to try and make your own luck and continue to work at it. And there's opportunities where you can go to the pre trainers, for instance, and they might give you an opportunity to do that.
Speaker 16Yeah. Again, um, I apologize. Forget the name of the young boy that was here earlier, but it is that passion and that striving for it. It's something that you really want to, if you really want to do it, you can make it work. There are many avenues in horse racing. There's lots of great people.
Speaker 2And, and the pony club. So if you want to, um, compete in this series, you have to just go and join a point at pony club. Yeah, Taylor. Yeah, correct.
Speaker 15So yeah, you have, you're in the club, pony club, and then you get the option if you want to compete and go down, you know, the path and the competitions of ride to
Speaker 2time. Yeah. And so how many people will compete? 20 make the final.
Speaker 15Yes, correct. So we've got 20 riders, um, on, on Friday night. Um, but we've had a lot of competitors go through and yeah, it's your top two riders from each zone. So yeah, it's exciting.
Speaker 2Then everyone will have it. Like it's, um, I guess Moonee Valley was something else. One of the great race tracks before, obviously it was shut down, but still it's a Cranbourne's going to be great fun under the lights. Um, and I guess there'll be a few of the big name jocks. He's there on a Friday night. They'll be able to meet them and, and, um, um, have a chat to them as well. So terrific initiative and you can watch it of course, on racing.com.
Speaker 15Yes, that's right.
Speaker 16Yeah. And then on Monday, we've got another initiative with pony club, Victoria. We've got 30 young, um, young riders that are coming into Flemington into racing Victoria. So they will then have a strength and conditioning session with our apprentice, um, gym coach from the VIS. They will have an education session with Lisa Stevens, who's the jockey psychologist. And she'll, uh, talk to the parents and the kids about working and, you know, becoming an adult in the workspace and that it's a safe space. Um, and then they'll also have a mechanical horse session as well. So that's their, there's 30, 30 families that are coming in on Monday.
Speaker 2And do you find Taylor that these pony clubs embrace you?
Speaker 15Yeah, definitely. Absolutely. They love it. Um, again, it's something different. So, you know, your basic is dressage, show jumping, cross country. Um, I come along and bring the silks and the track saddles and I get them. And to get up in the, you know, jockey position pretty much. And they can go for a can or around. And again, the kids love it. Something different. And, um, I think after that, that's when they get pretty hooked and they want to find out what's next. Like what else I can do.
Speaker 2So, yeah. A lot of our superstar jockeys have started that way as well. No horse background or no racing background, but it's been through the love of the horse through, um, the equestrian side of it. And now they've become dead set superstars of this game. Yeah. Correct. Yeah. So hopefully we find our next. Next champion there on Friday night at Southside racing, Nathan and Taylor. Thanks very much for joining us. So if we want to get involved, just go to the racing Victoria website and all of the information that you need, you can find it is there.
Speaker 16And, um, there's contact numbers for myself or Danielle Smith, who's our department lead. Um, please contact us, phone, email, whatever. Um, if we don't have the answers, we will find out the answers for you and we will get back to you.
Speaker 2And I think also for some racing stables out there, like, um, they can work closely with you. And how they can, um, improve their business in a way to help these younger people. And that will eventually help their racing industry, but hopefully themselves as well.
Speaker 16Most of them are very, very good. Like we are really appreciative for the ones that do take that time and invest the time and effort. And it's not just with the track work riders is the younger staff and building them up to having a career in racing. Um, that's just what we need to keep doing.
Speaker 2All right. Then thanks very much for joining us. Good luck on Friday night. Job well done. And thanks for explaining all of the information that you've been able to tell us. tell us today. Good on you, Tyler. Good on you, Nathan. Thank you. There's Taylor Childs and Nathan Rose, both working for RV, Taylor, the Workforce Development Program coach and jockey. And, of course, Nathan Rose doing a great job with the track work rider development as their coordinator and also a former jockey. You're missing being a jockey? Not at all. No. It's better.
Speaker 16Not in the current sphere. It's just so hard. I looked at, I know it's a bit at this time of year, but at Geelong, I think it was the last ride, there was 21 individual group on winning jockeys riding there. Yeah, it's difficult. That's where it's at.
Speaker 2Yeah. Thanks, mate. Appreciate it. Time for a break. We're going to come back with plenty more straight after this, including, of course, the midweek masterclass team, as we try and find you a few winners tomorrow. Plenty of text messages coming through. Hi, G. Easy to read with the MRC position now. The Caulfield track is going to be a disaster for the carnival and the blame game has started already. Jockeys are the bravest sports people in the world. If our jockeys believe the track is unsafe, then as we as an industry support their decision, cheers from Campbell. Hi, Gareth. It's unfortunately super hard to get into track riding. I just mentioned that one from Holly. Yeah. Yeah, you can, these Giddy Up hats. Demi actually, my partner, my fiance, she purchased one of these. You can buy them online. So, yeah, but we're going to try and make our own, our own Giddy Up hats be similar to this. And we have designed a few of them, but they are not this one. You can definitely buy online. A few more text messages coming through. Where do we go? A few questions about Nashville Willer. He's riding Gringotts in the big dance. That is correct. Amazing journey. We'll stay in Australia, correct, after the Golden Eagle. That was the Kiramar horse that we're talking about that will arrive in Australia to take on She's Alibi in that Golden Eagle. It's 10.36. Sky Mall Castle will join me next for Breeding and Bloodstock. And then, of course, we've got the Midweek Masterclass team that will try and find us a few winners across the Wednesday Metropolitan tracks right across Australia.
Speaker 1Join the conversation on 0499 736 736. Welcome to Breeding, Bloodstock and Banter with Gareth Hall and the Captain. Good morning to you, Guy.
Speaker 17Good morning, Gareth. How are you?
Speaker 2I am very well. I am very well. How much would have the breeding game been watching these trials yesterday in Sydney? And we've seen a few of the two-year-old trials as well, all the jump outs in Melbourne in recent times over the last couple of weeks. But usually we see a few media releases that their first season size or these two-year-olds that we're seeing for the first time, like the animals, et cetera, they've hit the ground running, Guy.
Speaker 17Yeah, it was actually interesting. I noticed yesterday and went back about three or four years and the tempo of these trials has actually slowed down a lot, Gareth. I mean, a lot of the winners were sitting back midfield and coming to the outside under minimal urgings and getting the job done and looking pretty good doing it. Whereas back in the day, they used to just go as fast as they could for the 800 metres.
Speaker 2Yeah, times have changed really, aren't they? They're starting to look after their two-year-olds a little bit more and getting them ready to have their campaigns kicking off, say, towards the back end of the year instead of the spring, I guess.
Speaker 17I'm not sure exactly how many years ago it was, Gareth, but they used to have double-figure amounts of heats for both Colts and for fillies. Yeah. And I think yesterday there was something like 60 horses trials, you know?
Speaker 2Yeah. And what impressed you most? Like, we saw a few of the animals and they looked unbelievable.
Speaker 17Yeah, I think it'll come down to the breeder's plate and the gym crack. And I think the way it sort of looked there yesterday with the track drying out and the wind picking up, that it's probably going to be $4 a field in both the Colts and the fillies division, which means it's going to be pretty even. It's probably going to come down to barriers a little bit too.
Speaker 2Yeah. So, Angel Capital, how important was that victory for him there on Saturday?
Speaker 17Well, I mean, you can only say he's unlucky so many times. And on Saturday, Benny Mellon gave him a beautiful ride and he got the job done and that secured his stud future. And now, if they're talking about Everest and that, and he can go and run a place in Everest, it makes him even more valuable.
Speaker 2Does it matter if he does it when another group won now? His job's done?
Speaker 17I think if you go through history and the number, the number of stallions that have gone to stud, some of the very best ones didn't win a group one. Some of them only won one. And as long as they've, you know, as long as they've competed in the group ones, it probably comes down to how many group ones you win as to what your service fee's going to be.
Speaker 2The only small problem from his victory on Saturday, I don't know if the year-long team would be using the race call, the Enigma. He wins the group one. It was a great call by Matty Hill, but I don't know if you can market a stallion by calling him an Enigma.
Speaker 17I think if you go back through his form, he had genuine excuses a number of times, but I mean, yeah, I get it, but I'm sure that, you know, with the days of AI and everything, you can dub another call over the top if you need to, can't you?
Speaker 2Yeah, a hundred percent. But he is a horse that obviously he'd been threatening to win a group one and the luck came his way. He got the surface that he wanted. Benny Mellon gave him a peach and he never looked like getting beat. And I'm sure as Chris Wallace pointed out and James McDowell, McDonald, like usually if you win one group one, there's a strong chance that you can run a few more guy.
Speaker 17Yeah, well, it's the time of year where there's going to, you know, there's the horses in Sydney and Melbourne are spread out a little bit. So there's opportunities every weekend for a good race. So I'm sure they'll find the right race for him and give him a chance to win another one.
Speaker 2Were you surprised to see She's Alibi go to a might and power on her way to a golden race?
Speaker 17Golden Eagle. I don't think any, anything surprises you with moods and, and I, you know, and I think, I think, you know, running over a trip can harden them up for it to come back and trip it. It's happened in the Randwick Guineas and that coming back to a Doncaster. So I can't see why it won't be any difference with her.
Speaker 2Yeah. It's going to be fascinating to see what she could do.
Speaker 17Well, she'll probably do what she's done the last five starts, Gareth, and just give them a good old fashioned spanking.
Speaker 2Go bang. Would you start Eliana with 58 on her back in a Melbourne cup?
Speaker 17Doubtful, I would have thought. I mean, I, I get it that the weights have gone up, but I mean, you know, what did half yours have last year and what are they expecting him to carry this year? You know, like they haven't missed him, have they?
Speaker 2Well, you've got to give someone top weight, don't you, Guy? And if he's the best credentialed horse in the race, well, there's no other options for the handicapper, no other option for the handicapper, but to do what he did.
Speaker 17No, but he still hasn't missed him, has he?
Speaker 2No, but what, I think they desperately needed a Sir Delius to nominate for the Melbourne cup. He nominated for a Caulfield cup. And if he nominated for the Melbourne cup, we're not having this conversation anymore.
Speaker 17No. No. No, but I mean, it's just, it just is what it is. But I mean, somebody, somebody always feels like they've been a little bit hard done by, don't they?
Speaker 2Yeah. And I don't think like, I think, that she's got the ability to win a Melbourne cup with 58 on her back against the field that she might come up against there on that first Tuesday, November. But as Chris Waller pointed out, it's like, I've got to go, I've got to go home and patch her up after that race. What damage would that do to her to compete in the Melbourne cup around Flemington over the two miles in a high intensity race with 58 on her back? Like what harm will that do to her next season or the season?
Speaker 17Well, I mean, I think, you know, you've got to realize she's, she's reasonably versatile, even though she's only one, you know, she's won a couple of group ones at the 2400. I think she's just probably nearly as good at 2000 meters and, you know, in the autumn, there's a lot of races around for her. And then next year, there's a lot more races around for her again. So, you know, to go and run in the Melbourne cup with 58, does she get any more weight in it next year if she wants to run?
Speaker 2Yeah. Well, this is the year, like, if you think you're going to be winning a Cox plate or going close, then, um, you sort of got to have a crack for this year's Melbourne cup. If you think she can win more weight for age races. So, and the way that the Europeans are, um, uh, like attacking the Melbourne cup these days, they're not bringing their best days like they used to once upon a time. They're, they're bringing the progressive types and some of them, they're hardly starting because they don't want to, um, they don't want to get up in the ratings because they want to to have a winnable weight for a Melbourne Cup. So the games, people have become a lot smarter, really, trying to get into the Melbourne Cup.
Speaker 17Oh, exactly. But, I mean, it still makes for good racing. I just think Eliana, 58, you know, with the two-kilo sex allowance, it means she would add 60 if she was a boy, you know?
Speaker 2Yeah. Who's the best three-year-old for Caulfield Guineas at the moment?
Speaker 17That race looks pretty even. There's a few more going around this weekend to try and cement their chances, but I'd say that Blind Rage would probably be nearly the favourite at the moment. Yeah. Is he better than Trombolt? Well, Trombolt's going to run on Saturday, but he's drawn just inside the outside fence. Probably doesn't make it easy. No. But some, you know, horses have won the Golden Rose from outside barriers, but the last five years it's been 1-1-2-3, you know? So, it doesn't give you that much confidence, does it?
Speaker 2No. What did Central Europe draw?
Speaker 17I think the five Waller horses drew 9, 10, 11, and 13 or something, and 12 as well, so.
Speaker 2Yeah, well, they're going to have 13 for Central Europe. They've got to handicap Waller somehow. It looks like they've done it at the Barry draw. It was a proud day for New Zealand racing, in a way, with an ace high doing what Blind Rage, the sire of Blind Rage, so, geez, he's shot well there, Trent Busseton.
Speaker 17Yeah, he did well, I think. But, I mean, the horse actually had quite a good pedigree further back. I think seed changes in the pedigree and that sort of thing. So, obviously, he was smarter than the rest of us and got the horse at pretty good value.
Speaker 2Yeah, he'll go to a Cox Plate as well. Do you reckon a three-year-old could be competitive in a Cox Plate this year? Is it a. And we've seen them have success in previous years as well, but I think. The Cox Plate is crying out for a three-year-old.
Speaker 17Yeah, I think we've still got a lot of water to go under the bridge before we start contemplating that horse winning Cox Plate myself, Gareth. Yeah, it's a. You know, everybody's got the opportunity to dream.
Speaker 2They do, they do. What about these ready-for-run sales? You got them covered at the moment there, Guy, or when do you start to look at them? Because we're going to have some breeze-ups there for the NZB sale. Coming up in three weeks' time. And then, of course, Inglis have got their ready-to-run sale ready to go during the Everest week.
Speaker 17Yeah, I think the breeze-ups are on the 29th of September for Inglis and Magic Million. So, I've got the shortlisted down to about 60 horses to check out, and so it'll be interesting to see how they breeze up.
Speaker 2And what do you look at when you're watching them breeze up?
Speaker 17I just look at action and look at how they deal with the day, you know. But, I mean, everybody's got an opinion. Some of them don't make much money. Some of them make a lot of money. Some of them end up good, and some of them don't, you know. Yeah. It's just like buying a yearling, really, Gareth.
Speaker 2It is. Is it so? You reckon it's similar, or do you have a. Can you get enough data to help you choose, like, their length stride and all that? Can you get that information?
Speaker 17The only thing you can't see, Gareth, is how hard they try.
Speaker 2Yeah, and that. If only you could talk to them, Guy. You could interview them.
Speaker 17If only. If only they could talk back.
Speaker 2Yes. Well, you pick winks. You must have saw something.
Speaker 17Yeah, it was a while ago now, Gareth.
Speaker 2It was a while ago. Now, there's a question coming through, Guy. When you head to Melbourne, should you buy a tram ticket or train ticket, or should you just let it ride?
Speaker 17Well, did you say who sent the questions?
Speaker 2No, they didn't have any name on that. No, no. I just heard a whisper, anyway.
Speaker 17Yeah, yeah, I know. Well, I actually went on a train with a bloke who didn't buy a ticket. Yeah, and you got. And the lady said he'd only get a warning. There you go. And then a week later, is it the mailbox or the fine for $150?
Speaker 2Yeah, there you go. So make sure when you go on those trains, it's only going to cost you a dollar. You just put your card there, and away you go. Hey, what about the captain's pick?
Speaker 17Gee, the captain's pick? Well, the rug. The Aussie rules was pretty good on the weekend, with the lead changing quickly in the last bloody 10 minutes, wasn't it? Yes. Somebody was on Sydney, and they managed to get one behind for the last bloody 15 minutes, so that was very good of them. Yeah. And then Brisbane just jumped out of the ground and got it all sorted as well in the end. So that's going to make for a great game on Saturday, isn't it?
Speaker 2Yeah, it is. So have you got a captain's pick?
Speaker 17Well, I was just. Having a look at things there, Gareth, and the fields are not out for the weekend except the Golden Rose. I don't mind a horse running tomorrow in race two at Warwick Farm, number eight, each way at $14. Consulate. It's not a bad horse.
Speaker 2Consulate. That'll do us. Race two, number eight, in Sydney tomorrow. Good on you, Guy. Thanks for your time, as always.
Speaker 17Are you off to the grand final on Saturday, Gareth?
Speaker 2Wouldn't miss it, Guy.
Speaker 17Wouldn't miss it. Wouldn't miss it. What are you cheering for?
Speaker 2The mighty lions, of course.
Speaker 17The mighty lions.
Speaker 2Yeah, yeah. We'll get the chocolates, hopefully.
Speaker 17It's actually amazing that Melbourne hasn't even got a team in the final, isn't there?
Speaker 2Well, it's a true national game.
Speaker 17That's why. Yeah, I think they've all moved to American football now anyway.
Speaker 2No, no. It's still the most popular sport in this country, the NFL. The NRL are not far off them, but American football is very popular. So it's quickly growing in this country. There's no doubt about that. But I know you're a full AFL fan, aren't you, Guy? AFL, NRL, racing, all of the above, Gareth. Whatever you can bet on. Thanks for that, Captain. Have a great day. See ya. There's Guy Moldcaster. We'll come back with plenty more straight after this.
Speaker 1This is. Gideon with Gareth Hall on Gideon. It's now time for the Midweek Masterclass.
Speaker 2Welcome back to the Midweek Masterclass. Let's try and find you some winners. We're at Warwick Farm, Geelong, Eagle Farm, Northam and Gawler tomorrow afternoon. Mark Roden joins us to kick off the Midweek Masterclass because we are going to Warwick Farm in Sydney on a good four. The rail's out five metres from the thousand to the winning place and three metres for the remainder. Hello to you, Mark.
Speaker 18Hello, Gareth. How are you?
Speaker 2Good, thank you, mate. Where do we start with your play?
Speaker 18I'm going to start in race two, a benchmark 68-4 three-year-old. We've got a fairly short-priced favourite here, number six, Payton, who I think is a very good chance in the race, but I'm going for a little bit of value in the form of number three, Blessed Eagle. It sort of shared the lead in a small field last start and was sort of outgunned by Sequin late, but I think that was a pretty reasonable race, even though it was a small field and looked pretty moderately run. Sequin ran in a big race. He raced on Saturday and was a bit outclassed, but the third horse has won since. Blessed Eagle's going to go forward. Payton can just miss the start, half a length or a length, and from barrier one, if he gets caught it up, he might be in strife. Look, he's going to be hard to beat Payton, but I think at around 650 compared to about 230, I'd rather be with Blessed Eagle.
Speaker 2Do you give Consulate a chance?
Speaker 18I'd rather see it. I mean, I know McDonald's back. It won on a very wet track when it won last prep. I'd rather have one look at it, I think.
Speaker 2All right, then. Keep an eye on that Galloper. So race two, number three, Blessed Eagle. What else have you got for us?
Speaker 18Over to race four, I'm very taken with the first up run of number seven, Samarell. She won a maiden on Dubu in her first prep and hasn't won since, but I think four or five of her nine starts have been a crew ball listed level. So they've got an opinion of her, and she hasn't quite measured up. She did run second in the regional lap on the Penova last spring, but she hasn't quite measured up at that level. She got back to last or close enough behind Queen's Gamble last start, closed off really well, passed the entire field, bar the winner, who won by about three lengths. Look, with the rate of that five, I don't love backing them if they get back, but she just showed such an impressive turn of foot there. I think she might be able to run past these as well. Around her, it's a very even race. I think anything above $3 is pretty backable.
Speaker 2Beautiful Samarell race four, number seven. Anything else for us, or we'll just play those two?
Speaker 18Look, if you want to have a two-horse plane race three, I thought number two, Piero Ladd, and five, Upton Street would be hard to beat. Around those odds, you could probably back both.
Speaker 2All right, then. Beautiful. We appreciate your time as always, Mark. Thanks for that.
Speaker 18No worries, Gav.
Speaker 2There we go. There's Mark Roden. He's two main plays. A race two, number three, Blessed Eagle, and race four, number seven, Samarell. His main play's there. We're hoping to catch up with Matt Hyland, the boss of the Victorian Jockeys Association, around a quarter to 12 today. Is that when he can join us? Okay, so he's just in a meeting, so we'll catch up with him. We're going to continue on the Midweek Masterclass after this, so we'll try and find you a few winners at Geelong, Gawler, of course, and South Australia as well. Northam and WA and Eagle Farm in Brisbane. So we'll continue on the Midweek Masterclass next.
Speaker 1Live across Australia, this is Giddy Up! with Giddy Up!
Speaker 2Gareth Hall. getting up um busy final hour coming your way we welcome our friends now listening to us on their local se and turf dial throughout wa chris nelson will join us in just a moment also going to catch up with mitch lewis who's back in action great ad mitchie lewis back he's been in fine form for betsy.com.au link and more and we'll get matthew french's best bets there from northern tomorrow afternoon um looking forward to catching up with helen harding of course the trainer of the jester's son so she'll join us um to talk about her biggest win as a trainer and that happened in the boulder cup there on sunday we've got bag of tips today um big facing the breeze it's been confirmed that leap to fame will be heading to wa who would have thought that to compete in the nuller ball the slot race next year um and then we'll finish off the show with maddie highland the president or the ceo of the victorian jockeys association um we'll get his thoughts on that statement there from the mrc who basically said i'm not going to be a jockey i'm going to be a jockey i'm going to be a basically pointed out today that um the track was safe to race and the jockeys got it wrong regarding um them moving that rail out of course it was the jockeys and the stewards that um the mrc believe got it wrong so the rail should never have been moved from that seven meter spot there down the straight on saturday so it's a very interesting time in victorian racing at the moment chris nelson joins us he's done the form for us um at that meeting there at eagle farm tomorrow you can check out racing queensland.com.au for where queensland is racing today chris nelson hello to you good morning
Speaker 19to you gareth good morning to all the listeners how do we back a
Speaker 2winner tomorrow mate
Speaker 19uh at this stage it's been really really dry so the track would be uh good uh we are expecting maybe a shower or two tomorrow morning though so i'll update you on that in the morning a couple of tips at this stage but we could add to that easily tomorrow uh race three horse number five exuberance trained by tony golland daniel moore will take the ride now three runs for the golland stable good first up at the gold coast excuses second up but that last start was really good at eagle farm behind russian ripper uh she was forced wide all the way she was beating one three quarters and she gave plenty down the running so from gate four tomorrow without any scratchings well placed race three number five exuberance and one from the trials race four number eight buttercup from down your way formerly trained by tom dabinig uh now with james healy on the six of eight so consistent without winning this mare but i did like the trial uh here on the sunshine coast a week and a half ago just uh cruise down the outside won that trial with a lot in the tank and some of these might struggle a little bit but i think buttercup's probably close to a win so a definite market watch but at this stage off that trial a good chance race four
Speaker 2number eight buttercup so race three number five and then buttercup race four number eight so exuberance and buttercup i have plenty of exuberance over buttercup um my buttercup little um muffins that my mum used to make they were the days they were the days weren't they chris so thanks for that brother no
Speaker 19worries have a
Speaker 2good day jesus been dominating this man mitchie lewis from betsy.com.au and uh he joins us now hello mitch good morning g how are you man good thank you mate how's the cricket season
Speaker 20uh quickly approaching of course yes yep in pre-season so sun's been out so we'll be able to get a couple good hits in so fingers crossed
Speaker 2where do we start with your plays mate at geelong
Speaker 20tomorrow yep so i'm just going to start look there's there's not a lot of value in the early parts of the card g so for now i'm going to target the last couple in the quaddie legs race five uh i'm with eight aradio for the haze team jamie melamon this mare resumes she's had some pretty handy trials um she's sort of threatened a few times before breaking through excuse me at packing them late in the prep so barrier four i think she lands in a good spot one of her main dangers in the market the nine cushions i'm a big fan of contesting some group races but i think that horse is going to be better over more ground so for me aradio might get them here fresher and i think that's going to set up well for that horse yes
Speaker 2so that's right
Speaker 20then right what
Speaker 2else have you got
Speaker 20for us race eight's the next one so changing market i'd assume here because the eight it's a yes is your current favorite i'm i'm not sure this plan will be but he raced yesterday so he might come out of the race yet the one that i like um is another horse resuming the four sun devil for o'brien damian lane on won its first two races in its first prep python and sale then went to flemington in a stronger race finished down the track but you know first prep third up deep into that prep might have had enough looked really nice in two trials so i think coming in fresh sets up well barrier nine maybe was the only thing that held me back a little bit but there's not a huge amount of speed i thought mr assertive the 10 lead but i think it's going to be a good race for me and with she's my ex outside sun devil damian line might just be able to attack on that horse find some cover and be in a good position so off the trials i think that's a horse i'd be keen to be backing it early the four sun devil beautiful race eight number four sun devil anything
Speaker 2a galler tomorrow
Speaker 20mate yeah look uh waiting on markets um there's a couple i like but prices where they're going to get to is always the main query this time race three horse number seven lafont in the staying race for me just the out of the box race i think that's going to be a good race for me i think that's going to be a good race i think that's going to be a good race i think in class i think as anyone wants from 11 but gets an easier race here and i think the key might be the drying track i'm not sure having a look at some of his races how much he loves it too wet so barrier two if he can settle close enough i think he'll be finishing strong and if the track's even he should be running on so yeah he'll be my play at this stage and then we'll have to wait and see with some of these other markets so race three number seven lafont so race five number eight
Speaker 2race eight number four at geelong and then race three number seven lafont and we can get all of your tips mate and we can watch all of your work and read all of your work at betsy.com.au
Speaker 20correct g man that gauler set is up and loaded into the app so yeah wait around there markets you know hopefully sort of 1 32 o'clock and hopefully we get a good price on a couple
Speaker 2beautiful so that's betsy.com.au for mitchie lewis's work there and you are seeing them beautifully at the moment so we appreciate your time as always mate thank you g man i'll chat you soon good luck there's mitchie lewis thanks to racing sa lincoln moore sent through his best race one number three luna vista race three number six extra chill and race five number one dampen so one three three six five one matthew french at northern race two number 13 maybe maybe maybe and race three number three rory's revenge so race two number 13 race three number three we're going to take a break helen harding will be joining me next year on giddy up after she took out the boulder cup and with the jester's son winning that feature at kalgoorlie on saturday
Speaker 1join the conversation text us on 0 4 9 9 7 3 6 7 3 6 live across australia this is giddy up with gareth hall followed by
Speaker 21caramundi as they come into the straight it's la valliere with the candy kid down the outside lillian here's opportunistic with the jester's son running on the and satino as well they're across the track in the middle opportunistic hits the lead the candy kid the fence together with also lillian and the jester's son running on the and satino as well they're with the jester's son it's the jester's son with opportunistic the jester's son's going to go on and win the esperance galloper takes out the boulder cup the jester
Speaker 2yeah it was a great victory wasn't it there in the boulder cup there on sunday afternoon at kalgoorlie on the goldfields there in western australia helen harding's been a very good trainer for many a year based at esperance but that was her biggest success there on saturday or sunday winning the list of 125 000 boulder cup with the horse by the name of the jester's son who started off his career there with lindsey park and then was purchased online by helen and her connections for twenty two and a half thousand dollars and it's fair to say he's been a pretty handy buy and helen joins us now here on giddy up helen congratulations
Speaker 22thank you morning gareth yes it was a very exciting day for all of
Speaker 2us yeah were you expecting that on sunday
Speaker 22look he was definitely in with a chance on his um look he's come back a lot bigger and stronger this campaign and he's done nothing wrong second in the cam boulder cup then one second in the tats and a very close second in the cool gardy cup but you know you have to get some pretty good horses so i thought he could definitely run top three but um so it wasn't unexpected but it was a pleasant surprise so
Speaker 2why did you like him to purchase him for twenty two and a half thousand dollars online oh look i
Speaker 22had nothing to do with the purchase the people that purchased the horse had shares with him at lindsey park okay so when he went online they bought him and sent him over to me to train which was very nice
Speaker 2i say had you known the did you know the owners before they sent the horse yes i have i have had
Speaker 22horses with them before yeah and quite a few over yes and when
Speaker 2what was your first impression of him when he arrived um he
Speaker 22was a nice horse and we thought he'd be a handy horse for um esperance and calgooly but sort of he's just got bigger and stronger and better as as he's gone through like always been a struggle to keep the weight on the horse um yeah this campaign is just a lot bigger and stronger and yeah holding his weight on the horse and he's just got bigger and stronger and he's conditioned really well
Speaker 2so just describe esperance for us like how long you've been training there for and um what is it like to train a thoroughbred from that part of the world
Speaker 22oh it's just great for training we have a great facilities we're always on the grass for fast work um good climate doesn't get too hot too cold only issue with their distance you've got to travel to go to other race meetings but yeah we've got a very strong club down here and it's you know we get a lot of big numbers over our season we're i think we've got two two South Australian trainers coming over to base here for the season. won last year so yeah now it's getting stronger every year and how
Speaker 2long does it take you to get to Calgoorlie from Esperance uh four
Speaker 22hours that's a nice short drive for me just
Speaker 2around the corner then Helen it is for me yeah and what was it like for you that have been in this game for a long time to to win a listed race like the Boulder Cup what did it mean
Speaker 22to you oh it was very exciting like I went so close in the Esperance Cup this year with the horse um I thought he was very unlucky not to win it so that sort of made up for um the disappointment of going down by a nose in the Esperance Cup so yeah it just meant everything been coming up and down that road for a lot of years um yeah so it was nice to win a big one
Speaker 2and it's um to combine with a young rider who's just come out of his his apprenticeship and um he's got plenty of ability we know that his brother's one of the best jockeys in WA but Sefer Johnston Porter um this is probably the break that he needed I guess as well as a senior jock
Speaker 22yeah look he's been riding for me for a long time um he just clicks with the horse and like you put him on the horse and you have the utmost utmost faith that he's going to get the job done they seem to sort of know each other really well yeah um when he got when he got stuck on the fence he was only instruction we don't go to the fence and then he's on the fence but that was not through his doing so yeah he did a great job I think he's riding really well I think he's very underestimated and perfect he doesn't get the opportunities he should get
Speaker 2yeah it looks like there was a big crowd there at Kalgoorlie on Sunday
Speaker 22yeah the weather was really good um cool guy had a cup day unfortunately it was raining and south they didn't get much of the crowd but you know nice weather draws people out are
Speaker 2you dreaming to win the cow cup now with
Speaker 22him well you always dream again he's untried over 2300 I think when when cold I think he'll get the trip um you know when he led in person one I always said to the owners I still think he's a better horse sat back he's not really a front runner I think he's he's going to win I think he's going to win I think he's going to win get longer distances if he's ridden cold like that
Speaker 2yeah and how many horses are you working Helen
Speaker 22I've probably got 20 in work at the moment because not many race fit ones that I'm going to cow with but it's sort of getting ready for the eskimo
Speaker 2season now and when's
Speaker 22that start about the third weekend in November yeah
Speaker 2and it goes right throughout the yearly part of autumn is that right yeah I
Speaker 22finished on the long weekend in March
Speaker 2okay there you go um and it is a beautiful racetrack beautiful part of the world if you haven't seen it yet it's a beautiful racetrack it's a beautiful racetrack it's a beautiful racetrack it's a beautiful racetrack if you haven't been there so um if you're around WA and you want a bit of a track and you love your racing go to Esperance and you ask for Helen she'll give you a tip usually train two or three winners per meeting anyway Helen oh
Speaker 22not lately it's a struggle to train winners these days
Speaker 2well so happy for you Helen it was a great story um terrific performance by the jester son he's been a bargain buy at the end of the day and um you go and get that Kalgoorlie cup
Speaker 22I'll work on it thanks Garrett
Speaker 2Helen Helen Harding there um 15 minutes past 11 we'll talk some harness racing next as we face the breeze um before that of course we've got bag of tips and then we'll face the breeze and talk some harness racing join the conversation
Speaker 1text us on 0499 736 736 live across Australia this is giddy up with Gareth Hall the giddy up bag of tips for Oz equipment rentals supplying equipment to the construction mining and roadworks industries ozequipment.com let's try and find
Speaker 2you some winners um this afternoon across the three codes really looking forward to that meeting at Swan Hill the bet 365 Swan Hill meeting is my computer just um stuffs up so I've lost all the stuff that I needed anyway Dave Strelaw joins us and he's done the form for us at Swan Hill I'll help you out
Speaker 23Garrett you wouldn't believe it
Speaker 2I've got my computer in front of me and it's something I've put my phone on the delete button I've deleted the rundown so I apologize um I know the bag of tips I've sent it I've sent it a million times Oz equipment rentals the mighty ultimate talent bet 365 top tote plus so away we go salts hey well done to you mate Nick Foote he's one of racing's very own we claim him he's just I've just read Tommy Morris he's got a gig in the AFL grand final he's second AFL grand final so well done footy you superstar
Speaker 23yeah outstanding Tom probably could have changed his tweet to saying foot yeah two units was was assessed as being one of the best four umpires in the game and that's why he's selected so no it's a brilliant effort as well and you know he did face a bit of adversity at one stage this year so to come through that and I don't think it can be underestimated the pressure that those officials are under like big crowds you know a blow of the whistle or or leaving the whistle out of their mouth can send one team to a grand final and keep another team out like that's about as high pressure environment as you can get so yeah he's thrived this year and um yeah his second grand final won't be his last no
Speaker 2100% I think you put him under more pressure from time to time but um yeah I agree with you it is it isn't it like um they've got that amazing ability to do that job um with a hundred thousand people screaming at them basically um and on different sides of the fence depending on who they're going for so they do a mighty job and um yeah he thoroughly deserves that opportunity so I went on to to Nick foot so does he still get to do the podcast or they put him on media ban I
Speaker 23think uh no we've got some time on Thursday to go beautiful record the podcast which would be good so yeah he's um he's got a busy week but it just happened to fall fall out way that um on record day he's got a few hours where we can get in and
Speaker 2talk some racing um looking forward to this Swan Hill program are you confident yeah I'm looking
Speaker 23forward to it as well generally on the sort of um you know your Mondays Tuesdays Thursdays whatnot you you look at the meeting you you might find three sometimes four bets but I've got an interest in every race today I think it's a good program uh we're on a good Ford tracks probably going to continue to dry I'm certainly favoring horses that are going to be up on pace but yeah I've got a good interest in today
Speaker 2take it away with your plays then
Speaker 23uh I'll uh start with my best bet comes up in race three number five so star unfortunately some scratchings this morning take away a little bit of the price but I think um he's close enough to a good thing he's coming through some maidens in his first preparation that are just so much better than what any of these other horses that we've seen on race day have contested and the way that he's jumped out leading into this I expect him to improve uh I don't think it would matter if he sat four wider I think he would just destroy these race three number five so star uh my next best on the program comes up in race one oceans 407 race one number 10. uh this is a horse that debuted granted went around a big price at Bendigo but it was a very strong mate and it was won by zambales uh written Empire's come through and won since there's a few that are going to Geelong on Wednesday that's in terms of a country made and it doesn't get much stronger and I thought he stuck out quite well he's bred to get oh she sorry um he's bred to get a little bit further so Harry coffee on drawn out no speed underneath I think he'll take her to the front and um the rise in distance looks suitable race one
Speaker 2number 10. so race three number five race one number 10. your selections there at Swan Hill your quaddie
Speaker 23please yep um all this available as well on the racing.com tipping hub you can see my suggested plays for each race uh the quality starts in race five today eight race program five nine twelve race six two four six race seven six eight twelve fourteen and bring it home in the last with two six seven eight ten love it salts
Speaker 2we wish you the best of luck at Swan Hill enjoy your week and um yep the two units podcast to drop Thursday night looking forward
Speaker 23thanks mate appreciate it here we
Speaker 2go here's Dave Stree law Luke over Nessie and joins us Tari race one number six Tasman deal is his best and race three number one rich star so race one number six race three number one Chris Nelson at Emerald he likes race five number two hoo-roo what a great name that is hoo-roo and race three number six out of aces so race five number two race three number six you can head to the trots.com.ufx but harness racing tips and in-depth analysis for all major Victoria meetings soho play girl for Darren Carroll race three number four and race five number two for Ringo so three four five two harness racing New South Wales the home of the Carnival of Cups for Australian music rules he meets quality harness racing action at um menangle today race two number four bird song for Amanda rando race four number one Don Hunter and race six number seven one more reason the tips there from Amanda rando and at Gloucester Park for Glenmore he likes race two number one March freeway race four number 11 Rikiro Raider race five number 11 star of Orion and race six number one Grace Alice so two one four eleven five eleven and race six number 11. you can check out racing queensland.com.au for where Queensland is racing today Georgie Ferugia has done the form for us for Q1 Lakeside G'day Georgie G'day Garen how are you brother good thanks brother take it away with your specials please
Speaker 24yeah look Q1 Lakeside race two number five is where we're back off Hollywood Hogan a greyhound who who debuted last week there was good money for him the trial form had been good Gareth um and his run was his run was excellent uh it was eye-catching I don't think the box draw would matter too much they've come for him again today and I think he'll uh win at his second race start race two number five Race 8, number 8, our girl, Charlie, was really impressive. Her time was very good last week, winning on debut. And I think she'll just repeat the dose again, race 8, number 8. The other one, the class factor, I think, of all the program, race 11, number 6, Blue Art. You've been racing over the 457 metres, Gareth, which is okay for him, but I prefer him over the 550, which is where he goes to today. I think the shorter trip would just sharpen him up a little bit, get him into a nice enough position, and he's the class runner of the race. So just recapping, race 2, number 5, race 8, number 8, race 11, number 6. And, of course, we'll talk to you tomorrow about these match races in South Australia where we get to see wrongly accused go around against Dashing Slay and Like A Rock and Electrify. So there's a lot of Victorians looking for a one-way ticket into the Adelaide Cup final if they're the fastest of the match race winners.
Speaker 2Looking forward to that. Love the match racing in Greyhound Racing. And I'll tell you what, Georgie, you are a specialist at that. So I'm looking forward to fighting. You win us.
Speaker 24Yeah, it should be good fun. As we said, the Victorians usually go over there and dominate. We've seen without – sorry, I was going to say without a trace – wrongly accused trial around 30 and 10. The track record's 29.84. Looks like the weather's going to be good in Adelaide. Let's see if anyone can give that a nudge.
Speaker 2Good on you, Georgie. Thanks, mate. Talk soon. There's George Ferrucci there. It's 25 minutes past 11. We're going to take a break. We're going to come back with Facing the Breeze. Will Rickson and Paddy Lee to join me.

Morning, G. How are you? I am very well. Is Paddy ready to go? Not quite yet. We'll get him in just a minute. But the big story that's broken in harness racing this morning is that Leap to Fame. He's heading to WA for the Nullarbor. So Kevin and Kay Seymour have purchased a slot for the Nullarbor, and they want to take Leap to Fame across to Perth for that slot race, and then I guess they'll stay on for the Fremantle Cup. So you won that race last year with Max the Lightwheel.
Speaker 25Yeah. It was always interesting how they had it so close to the New Zealand slot race, and some people had to make a bit of a decision. They had Don Hugo's and a like of what way they were going to go. So Max got the right year, and it all worked out really good. But yeah, it might be a little bit stronger over there this year. So it's exciting for WA to see a horse like Leap to Fame there if he makes it.
Speaker 2Yeah, and Paddy Lee, hello to you. Hey, G. How are you? Good, thank you. I think it's great for harness racing in Western Australia. It's a strong harness racing community, and they'll pack out Gloucester Park for the Nullarbor now because you'll have the Nullarbor to kick off the Western Trail. And then you'll have the Quokka, and the Sand Gropers move to Saturday night. But Paddy, to get a horse like Leap to Fame, I remember when I was over there and Lazarus arrived, and everyone was talking about the greatness of him. But I think Leap to Fame's got a different aura about him. And under lights at Gloucester Park on a Friday night, you do not want to miss it, Paddy.
Speaker 26No, you're 100% right, G. It's huge for the industry, huge for WA, and yeah, hopefully everything, we can get brought together on the night, and I reckon he'll put on a hell of a show.
Speaker 2Yeah, so I think that McCarvey's purchased a slot. Kingman, who's probably got to step up, dare I say it, a little bit. He's not in that New Zealand Cup form or that Hunter Cup form when it was a massive run, but he's purchased a slot too, so he'll try and get over there. You've changed your tune, Gareth. No, I'm still, I'll still back him in. He just got a pace. He galloped there the other day. You beat him, actually, with max delight. So well done there, Will. The old boy just keeps on turning up. But it's a long season, so what leap to fame, whether he goes to the Victoria Cup or not, time will tell, but he's definitely going to New Zealand. Then he gets back to New Zealand. He'll go to a Hunter Cup miracle mile, then to WA, and then he'll finish up, I reckon, in Queensland once again for the Inter-Dominion. So that's a hectic campaign, Will.
Speaker 25Yeah, I reckon he'll nearly bypass Melbourne. I'm not sure he'll go back there if he's going to Perth. I reckon he'll. Even for a Hunter Cup? To Queensland. Yeah, I reckon he'll go to New Zealand and then Blacks of Fakes in Queensland, and then he'll freshen up and just worry about sort of the Newcastle mile and Miracle Mile, which sort of works in pretty well because you're not long after that on your way to Perth. So I could be completely wrong, but I reckon he'll miss one of those, and if he was going to miss one, I reckon it'd be Melbourne.
Speaker 2It's still a major challenge for him, however it costs to park, because. Yeah. So there's one kryptonite that he's got. Well, his kryptonite is his gate speed, in a way. So if he draws the front row, he isn't guaranteed the front if there's a horse like a Kingman or a. I don't know if Captain's Mistress will go over for another boar or not, but there's horses in the past that have been holding him out. So Gloucester Park means that if he does draw the front row, Will, it doesn't necessarily guarantee him of finding the front. And it is competitive racing in that park. It's part of the world. So it'll be interesting to see how he goes around Gloucester Park. Your thoughts on that?
Speaker 25Yeah, I think it will suit him the way the racing is there. You know, I guess he wouldn't want to. He'd be happy now he did not draw that well in a nullable of only 10 in it. I don't think he'd want sort of an inside draw too much, because he can just work his way. And over the distance, we've seen how strong he is. So 2,800 nullable. And then the 3,000 Fremantle Cup looks. Yeah, geez, he'll be hard to beat, won't he, Gareth? Yeah, he'll be mighty hard to beat. If he shows up in his best form, I think he'll lead it up. And his runs at Redcliffe before have been unreal. And Newcastle's a pretty flat track, and he went like 49 flat there. So I don't think the half is going to be an issue. As you said, he could put on a show.
Speaker 2It's going to be interesting, Paddy, as well. So the locals, they did hold out Lazarus three wide without cover once upon a time. So they don't really like handing out, as Will's probably worked out. And Cameron Hart quickly worked out on a few occasions, didn't he, Will? Yeah, he hasn't been back. No, he hasn't been back. Locked him around. Jack Callaghan, even though he's found love, he didn't last long either. So they do drive a little bit differently over there, Paddy.
Speaker 26I don't think Prince was a fan of the Rubbin. When they were pushing him around a bit, he just got a little bit scared. He had to come back home. But yeah, no, they race competitive over there, and they're not afraid to put their horses on the front end and make a good, strong tempo race of it. But like Will said, I reckon with that distance, as we've seen Larry this year when he had to go back to last in the Inter-Dominion, he just eats that up for Brekkie. So it'll be great to see, and it'll be a really big build-up and hold a huge aura, I reckon.
Speaker 2Yeah. Who's the biggest danger to Leap to Fame at the moment? Of course, it's Captain's Mistress, but I don't think they'll clash on too many occasions now, Will, unfortunately.
Speaker 25Yeah, it's a clear answer. Yeah, I'm not sure. I would have said Got the Chocolates if he didn't go amiss, like if they were both aiming up for a New Zealand Cup. But, I mean, the best two horses racing at the moment in form of Captain's Knock and Captain's Mistress is pretty close to a return. So, I guess. I guess you could say them two right now. But, yeah, it'll be interesting to see what way it all plays out.
Speaker 2It was great to see the old boy win again on Saturday night.
Speaker 25Yeah, that was awesome because he's been going really good, Gareth. Yeah. They went like 51 and he hasn't drawn that well in against Captain's Knock, his last couple. And I've been super happy with how he's felt. And Aki's been really pleased with him too. And I was actually doing the form on Saturday night. He's only won the Null Ball this year, but he's run some awesome placings. So, I think he's still earned about $700,000 for the year. So, just to win another one on him was good because he really deserved it, the way he's been racing. And I think I looked at his sectionals, he got home in 25.7 wins. So, he's still got the speed in his legs. He's just an amazing horse.
Speaker 2In all seriousness, like Kingman, like he was brewing in a New Zealand Cup. He won a Victoria Cup. I still think it was one of the biggest runs of the whole season, his Hunter Cup run, when he got decked and lost all those meters. And then he loomed. He loomed up on the home turn. It looked like he was going to win. But, Paddy, he hasn't been the same horse since. When you lose a stowing like that, how hard is it to get him back? And he didn't go too bad, I guess, on Saturday. Like he galloped and then Luke McCarthy made sure he didn't knock him around because what was the point? But how hard is it to get a stowing back to race at their best after they lose form like he did towards the back end of his preparation?
Speaker 26Yeah, I guess. - This is a difficult one, Jay, because I think Maybe he tapered off towards the end of his preparation and he was looking for the paddock. And then he gallops on Saturday night and, like you said, Luke's knocked him around. So it'll be interesting to see over the next month how he performs. But when you come back to how you thought he maybe tapered off, I think he had a huge preparation, especially travelling to New Zealand a couple of times and those sort of things. It may have just taken its toll throughout the whole preparation and some of those big runs taken on Larry. I know it would have taken a lot out of him. But I guess, you know, if anyone's going to get him back to his best and manage him in A1 form, it's going to be Luke. So I guess he'll just be a watch and see over the next month to see where he's exactly at.
Speaker 2Do you think you can get him back, Will? You watched him closely there on the weekend. You didn't see much of him because you were too far in front. But your thoughts?
Speaker 25Yeah. Yeah. Like I. I don't agree exactly what Paddy said. If there's. I'm going to disagree with what Grimo said. If there's anyone to get him back, I think it is Luke. You might have to get Grimo on the show to ask what he thinks of the way he's going.
Speaker 2Yeah, yeah. Yeah, we won't actually.
Speaker 25Gareth, but. No, he's. Yeah, I feel like his trials and his first up run, even though things didn't. Like, he made the break. But you've got to remember, he also made a break in the Vic Cup and the New Zealand Cup and still won them both. So I think he's still not. Had his best and I'm sure Luke will, you know, place him and do what he has to do to get him back to his best. And I wouldn't be riding him off for sure because we've seen when he is right, he's a freakish talent.
Speaker 2Hey, Paddy, so many great stories Saturday night. The art of success, this daughter of Art Major, she is some horse to do what she did to defeat Miss Ari in Wicked Confession, who led them up. The time was 1.53.9 and she did all of the work from an outside second. Second row draw, basically.
Speaker 26Yeah, 100%. Yeah, she was a huge run and she probably put the writing on the wall over the last six months. She's just. Whatever challenges have been faced in front of her, she's just taken them in her sight. So, no, Emma and Clayton have done a great job with this mare and they left an even two bucks on Saturday night. So that was even more value for all the happy punters out there.
Speaker 2Not that we're unwrongly. I mean, not wrongly. We thought she could lead and win, but obviously not, Paddy. A birch at four didn't come through.
Speaker 26But Wicked Confession's done a great job as well, although I may have gave her a little pot there at one stage. I think for the value of the horse that they bought her for and for her to go through and done what she's done, I don't want Taylor to give me another slap like last time she saw me when we gave her a little pot on the radio. So, no, they've done a good job with that horse as well.
Speaker 2Yeah, you were wrong. But, yeah. Yeah, the winner was too good. Sam Neame, what a story that was, Paddy, for the Pacers, at 100 to 1 to win the Vic Bred four-year-old trotting end tires and goutings final.
Speaker 26Yeah, Darren Pace and young Blake's first group won. He drove the horse a treat. He gave it every opportunity and took the shortcuts. And, no, it's well-deserved for the family. And they were exciting races to watch on Saturday night. You know, there was some good-priced winners and some good, strong contested races. So, no, it looked really good. And even Gatesy's jam. I think she's found some super, super form. And Norm Willman was huge to sit outside her and got as close as she did as well.
Speaker 2Yeah, and rocking with attitude back from her Queensland campaign, took out the trotters free-for-all. And what about Catcher Wave? Like, he's won two-point-something million dollars. But he has had his critics over the journey because he would lose races that you would think he would win. But you would love to have him. Miracle mile champ. He's won another ball. He's won a Fremantle Cup. He's been a monster. Mighty horse for Andy and Kate Gath.
Speaker 26Yeah, 100%. And I know they were talking of retiring this horse, Pauline and David. So, yeah, when he bobs up and wins again, I think it's going to be mighty hard for him to retire him. And, yeah, Andy's handled him beautifully all the way along. Kate drove him terrific on Saturday night. But I think that just goes to show that when a race has run to suit, he's always in it and he just shows up. He's always showed up in the big stage. So, it'd be good to see him back at his best form because, coming into some of these better races, it'd be nice to see what he could do and probably just boost the races up a little bit as well.
Speaker 2Yeah. He's an interesting horse. Yeah. Yeah, he's a very interesting horse. Funny sort of horse, isn't he, Jay?
Speaker 26Yeah, I know he would have given Andy his challenges over time. And, yeah, I think he's just – it's funny how he's always bobbed up at good value in such good, prestigious races as well. And I know Miles, he's keen to get on that plane. And get over to New Zealand. So, he'll be – he had his wings out on Saturday night and he's ready to fly.
Speaker 2Yeah, 100%. He's just loving life, isn't he? He just loves a holiday these days, Milesy.
Speaker 26David Miles. Yeah, he's a frequent flyer traveller. So, yeah, Milesy, he's ready to rock and roll. And I know how much the holiday excites him. So, I reckon he'll give the Kiwis something to chase if he can get his mare in tip-top form like she can go. And especially with her lead-up run on Saturday night. Yeah. Yeah. Terrific.
Speaker 2Yeah. The big talking point out of Sydney as well was Lucasso. Can he win a Eureka, Will Rickson, after watching him in his first couple of starts now for Seton Grima?
Speaker 25It's hard to say that he couldn't. I guess Gareth is an X-Factor horse, isn't he? Yeah, I might be a bit critical on him. But he sort of got home in 27 the other night flat. And I think he broke 26 to start before. So, yeah. So, I wouldn't be just saying it's his race to lose. I think there's still plenty of other horses that are going to be giving him a really good challenge. It's an interesting talking point in the Eureka because in previous years, I feel like a lot of people could sort of get a feel together by this point. And I sort of got no idea what else is going to be in the race at this stage. I think Amer and Clayton will probably hold a strong hand again. But, yeah, look, I think he probably deserved to be favourite because he's. He's just on sheer ability. But he's still got a fair bit of time from now and then. So, I've seen him market. He was $2 something. I think you'd be pretty game to sort of get into him at that price this far out. But, yeah, it's definitely a. It's good that there's one locked away. He's locked away for the Eureka now. So, it will be interesting to see what comes next and who the next one is to get locked away.
Speaker 2Have you got one, Paddy, for the Eureka?
Speaker 26No, we probably just have a three-year-old filly there that we'd want to see a little bit more of her and probably only look to, you know, maybe take value of the draw just because of the sex. But, no, we're still open to finding the horse we need to try and win the race, G-Man.
Speaker 2History tells you the three-year-old's difficult will to win a Eureka.
Speaker 25Yeah, for sure. For sure. That's another big point. But, as I said, it's an interesting. It's interesting. Like, our best four-year-olds this year so far have been sort of Kiwi bred. So, it could be, like, a really even and great race. So, it'll be interesting to see what comes out of the box to get the slots.
Speaker 2Hey, any winners coming up for us, boys?
Speaker 26I'll go to Kilmore. Race four, number four, Jill will be clips in the maiden. She's made a meal of her first two starts, but she should be winning that. Who's driving? Uh, J.P.
Speaker 2Lee. All right, then. He's finished the celebrations there from the footy season. Good to see him back concentrating on what pays the bills. Will, have you. Yes. Have you got a winner for us, Will?
Speaker 25I've got a nice three-year-old filly. I'm going to Bathurst to drive on Wednesday. Of course, she's a Delaney. Middle of the car there. Strong bad, but she's a nice filly. I think she's my best chance for the week. Got one at value today, I think, Gareth. It's called Alpha Strong. It's a Trotter. It can do a bit wrong, but it does everything right. I reckon it can win. I think it's about race three today, so maybe it works.
Speaker 2Just believe. As long as you've got the hands, then you'll be all right, mate. You won't gallop.
Speaker 25Yeah, well, I've thought that before, but I've galloped plenty, so we'll see how we go.
Speaker 2We have full faith in you, boys. Great to have you back on the show. We'll catch up with you next week. Looking forward to that already.
Speaker 25Thanks, Gareth. See you, G-Man.
Speaker 2There's Paddy Lee and Will Rickson. We'll come back. We've got a statement from the Racing Victoria. Victoria's stewards regarding the media release that was sent out by the MRC this morning regarding that the stewards and the stewards got it wrong by moving that rail out to 11 metres from the 7-metre mark in the home straight. And Matty Hyland, the CEO of the Victorian Jockeys Association, will also join me to wrap up Giddy Up on this Tuesday morning. Now, there's been some development regarding the review of the Caulfield racetrack from the MRC and also from Racing Victoria this morning. It was an explosive statement this morning by the MRC, and it reads, The Melbourne Racing Club's review of last Saturday's Underwood Stakes Day meeting has found that the track, as presented was safe for racing and that the turf plugs used in preparation the track had been correctly installed now tanya fordson the ceo of the melbourne racing club is quoted and i read our review found no safety issue with the caulford racing surface the turf plugs were correctly installed the track as presented was safe for racing and the rail did not need to be moved the track subsequently raced safely and fairly throughout the meeting dozens of exactly the same turf plugs remained on other sections of the track that continued to be raced on after the rail movement with no issues for jockeys and horses it goes on to read the jockeys clearly did not understand how turf plugs work the jockeys claim that being able to pull the tops off the plug somehow showed that the track was unsafe is nonsense turf plugs are routinely installed a few days before a race day and are always able to be physically pulled up as grass plugs take at least two weeks to bind in with the rest of the turf profile this has been suggested by the jockeys and horses it goes on to read the jockeys clearly did not understand standard practice for over 25 years and not a problem they remain in place while horses gallop over them with no risk to jockeys or horses the stewards were placed in an extremely difficult position with concerns raised by jockeys less than an hour before the first race with a limited time available they were unable to properly consult our track team about the purpose installation and condition of the plugs before making the incorrect decision to move the rail our track team complied with that direction so the meeting could proceed but this is not how these issues should have to be dealt with on race day the new inspection process will give jockeys and participants confidence in the racing surface and allow genuine concerns to be identified and addressed by stewards and race clubs well before racing now racing victoria had put out this statement um and it's from the integrity services general manager of rv and jamie steer and it reads based on all the evidence available to us the jockeys and participants have been able to identify and address concerns of the track track in the home straight we stand firmly by the stewards decision to order the movement of the rail on race morning at caulfield the stewards must prioritize horse and rider safety at all times they were not prepared to compromise that position in the circumstances presented to them on saturday the stewards acknowledge that the track staff at all venues endeavor to present an optimum racing surface for all race meetings on this occasions stewards identified areas of concern with sections of the track in the home straight several riders subsequently raised similar concerns with the stewards the stewards ultimately formed the opinion that sections of the track were unsafe for racing on that day and this was the view shared by multiple senior riders the stewards will continue to act in the best interest of the industry and all stakeholders with safety and welfare at the forefront of their minds so um it's interesting um so mrc have got their story the stewards and the riders have their story and now the ceo of the victorian jockeys association matt highland joins me matt hello to you what do you make of the statement there by the melbourne racing club this morning
Speaker 27g'day gareth yeah no it's look it's uh interesting comments but um look all i can really say is that um you know we we support the view of our riders and and uh for obvious reasons i mean they're the people that are going out there you know doing the job and and they're in you know if their view is that the safe is at the track inconsistent or has got safety issues well it's well within their rights to raise it with the stewards and the stewards addressed it from there you know clearly the stewards were on the same page as those riders that spoke to them on saturday and uh you know um i just really from our perspective i think it's a bit rich to be attacking you know the people that are actually going there and um yeah getting on the back of these horses and riding horses when they've got raised concerns around the surface and the inconsistency of the surface and uh to sort of suggest you know as you know post a review that you know they don't know what they're talking about um yeah that's a bit that's extraordinary you know
Speaker 2so how do you fix this problem then well i
Speaker 27think that i think the issue gareth i mean as far as tracks going who'd be a track manager you know like it's a tough gig and and i'm i'm you know i'm i'm i'm it's not for me to to determine what needs to be done or should be done clearly the club are aware you know the issues were raised now they've done their review and and clearly with their track managers and so on but i mean to suggest that uh people that are walking tracks every day of the week when they go out this is a group one meeting on the day they're going out walking tracks every day that they go and ride and to suggest that they don't know anything about the preparation of tracks that's an incorrect statement that's just ridiculous have you seen anything like this
Speaker 2have you seen anything like this regarding a situation with these with the situation they face there on saturday
Speaker 27well you know from time to time we have issues with tracks and we have you know riders that raise issues with tracks yeah i've seen it before where stewards of you know there's been differing opinions but everyone's opinions are obviously respected and uh you don't these people got no idea what they're talking about they don't know what they you know they don't know what they're looking at and retrospectively the wrong decision was made there was there was concerns in regards to the service surface the people that are going out there and riding need to be respected it's it's not an easy job and if they've got concerns around the surface or they don't have complete confidence why would you go out why would you go out there and ride you know like it's and so they they you know they went through the right channel they raised it with the stewards the stewards had a look at it and they said you know they're not going to do it but look at the track they they you know clearly agreed that they they were concerned with it and and they took the necessary action you know yeah
Speaker 2um so what happens going forward do you talk to the mrc to try and work out
Speaker 27and um no i think that's a that's a racing victoria um for them to work through that i mean our expectation is that when our members turn up to caulfield on sunday they'll be on a consistent surface they'll have no issue with the surface and the day will progress that's that's it as far as we're concerned but but you know um you know racing victoria clearly have put a statement out they'll work with the mrc the club will you know they've done their review and they've they've um you know they'll do what they need to do to ensure that they prepare a track that's 100 safe and consistent for racing and everyone will play on that's that's my expectation yeah and i think
Speaker 2we're going to have a chat to tanya fullerton she's going to join us tomorrow she was busy this morning but i think that the paramount is the safety of jockeys at the end of the day and and the horses as well so they've got to produce a safe surface now they believe that they did and the jockeys um weren't safe to compete on that surface unless the rail was moved out and i guess the jockeys and the stewards they have to have that last say because you pointed out they're the ones that are competing i guess they won't compete if they don't feel safe so
Speaker 27it doesn't get any clearer than that yeah it's uh at the end of the day they're the people that are going out there you can have differing opinions and that's clear but to suggest those people don't know what they're talking about is you know or they don't know you know they got it wrong and they don't know what they're talking about these these people are professionals too you know they walk tracks as often or more often than anyone and and i'm not suggesting for one minute that that those that prepare the tracks you know we far from for us to to say that they don't know what they're talking about or they don't know what they're talking about they don't know what they're looking at you know like that's that's a debate that you just don't want to get involved in at the end of the day concerns were raised on the weekend the necessary action was taken and play on yeah it's not about who's right or who's wrong it's about the people going out there in their workplace feeling a hundred percent confident that you know it's there's no issue with the track as simple
Speaker 2as that thanks for your time maddie good on you there's maddie highland the ceo of the jockeys association yeah so obviously there's there's a misunderstanding from these parties um as this mrc release is stated today um with their review so we'll catch up with tanya alaska who did the review yesterday and obviously they've been quick to get this out and they're backed in their team um the mrc tanya fordson has said that and um and then obviously rv's backed in their team as well so you probably wouldn't expect any anything else from these two organizations but um we've got to work out and hopefully there's a plan involved and the talks behind closed doors are happening that we don't have this situation again and we'll talk about this tomorrow morning as well with the wednesday agenda team so that is it for giddy up thanks for your company as always it's been a busy show well under the team out the back there they've been superb as always i appreciate your company here on giddy up on this tuesday morning and hopefully you can join me tomorrow morning from eight o'clock and we'll kick it all off with the rv mcavoy who will be joining me on that wednesday morning to kick off our show and hopefully tanya fordson will join us as well a little later on on that wednesday morning but for now have a great day
