Giddy Up Full Show (21/10/26)

This episode of Giddy Up with Gareth Hall, aired on October 21, focuses on Geelong Cup day and the build-up to the Cox Plate, which will be run at Flemington this year. Troy Corstens and Calvin McAvoy join the show to discuss the Caulfield Cup fall involving Half Yours, who escaped serious injury and has been cleared by a CT scan. The stewards ruled the incident a racing incident, and the panel agrees with the finding while acknowledging the emotional toll on connections. The conversation covers the Cox Plate barrier draw, with Eliana drawn in barrier 10 and Land Legend in barrier 12, and the panel debates whether Middle Earth deserves a start. Zac Purton's ride on Ka Ying Rising in the Everest is also analyzed, with the panel defending the champion mare despite her defeat. Corstens makes a case for merging services among Melbourne's racing clubs to redirect savings to participants, and the group discusses the success and strain of twilight racing. Tom Magnier of Coolmore Australia joins to discuss the breeding industry, Guesthouse's injury, and the Everest slot arrangement with Giga Kick. Corstens also highlights the threat to greyhound racing in Tasmania and its funding implications for horse racing.

Speaker 2well thanks to bet three six five troy cawston's hello to you geez you got a busy uh morning care who's always busy on a wednesday it's a great time to be alive this is my favorite time of the year hello to you calvin mcavoy morning gareth you're looking
Speaker 3very swish yes today new tarot cash number yeah as if it's not going to be
Speaker 2hugo boss yeah yeah now you tell me this calvin you go oh geez you're dressed up for the geelong cup i said yeah of course it's still on cup it's the it's their biggest day of the year um and you do need to dress up he goes i was only going to wear shorts and a t-shirt like that's disrespectful for a to disrespect the geelong cup like that i i was disgusted i will
Speaker 3be there and i'll be dressed up nicely don't worry about it yeah what are you wearing i don't know i've got to go home and i might have to go and buy
Speaker 2a new outfit yes first of all how are you feeling mate it's been a tough three to four days especially what happened there on saturday um just describe your emotions and what you went through there on saturday
Speaker 3afternoon yeah it was um it was a really tough day on course obviously one probably one of the toughest days i've had on course and and um you know the the the emotions that went through myself and our team and and um you know we're excited you're there built up thought our horse had a really good chance and then when that fall happened um you know it was it was you don't really know what to feel you know first of all you don't know if the horse is okay um basically the the the field was going past the winning line i was at the fence waiting for them to go past to go out on the track um at that moment didn't know whether our horse was up or not um i looked up and i saw number one saddlecloth and a chestnut horse cantering past which was the first sign of relief from my point of view and then look to the left and you don't know how the jockeys are so um mate you know i went to the left not to the the horse was to the right he seemed okay went to the left ran down on the track um elise zara was behind me and um you know getting down there it's not a very good feeling when you don't know what you're what you're coming into and uh first of all i saw mark sort of he was sat up with his hands behind his back so that was good to see and and i saw jai was um in the ambulance sat up as well so that was the the first thing and and yeah it was it was a horrible day and um for our horse and obviously you know feel very sad for the waller team and the just feel very blessed that we took a horse home and um unbelievably he seems to be quite good you know he he's um got some cuts and bruises and some lacerations but you know he's uh back out having a hand walk twice a day and um full of beans and we actually had him booked in for his ct gareth um to go on to the melbourne cup uh on on monday and we elected to do that anyway not because we're continuing on with the prep but obviously it would just show if there was something and got the results back which were just clear and perfect so um he's a mighty tough horse and we feel very thankful that
Speaker 2we've forgotten um that is great news and when i was watching that race and i couldn't quite pick up who went down and then when i realized it was half yours and it's the melbourne cup champ on caulfield cup day and then mark sarah's down and then you're just trying to work out who the other horse was and it was a hope he wins and then jai mcneil um and we've through this like we we live through this sometimes in racing don't we try this is part
Speaker 4of the game i i um i was at the everest and yeah i'm having an amazing day yeah and watching the caulfield cup i only had eyes for one horse which um is obviously because my mate trains it and yeah um i don't bet so uh i was just interested in him and i watched him come down and just the the shock and the horror and all of a sudden uh you're you're in another state and i was i was i was desperately ringing on the phone and you don't want to drive people mad but you also want to know straight away yeah um so yeah it's horrible we don't we don't we never ever like to see that obviously we um we love our horses and and our animals and and most importantly we love our jockeys being safe so straight away i heard that half yours had got up but but i was more interested whether to see both boys were were up and moving and that was a massive relief soon as i heard that
Speaker 2and like with half yours you don't want this to happen to any horse and everybody in the racing industry love and adore their their horses but when it when it's a horse as well known as half yours like he's the melbourne cup and caulfield cup champ i've i thought that the job that your team did with yourself and your old your old man and tony the the way that you updated the public was so important for the game because um um that's what i think everybody wanted to to see and we didn't know what was happening and then when he got back okay and um did you feel that extra responsibility in a way it's not he's not just your horse anymore he's everybody's horse yeah
Speaker 3we did gareth and um we were conscious that you know he's a profile horse isn't he and and um and the other thing that can happen is chinese whispers in this game like you know um it can be people can talk and and the last thing we wanted was for false information to get out there and um you know first and foremost we wanted our ownership group and our staff to know what was going on and we wanted to get out there and we wanted to get out there and we wanted our staff to know what was going on so we um we've got a whatsapp group and and with all of our all of our staff in ballarat and flemington we made sure everyone was aware and just continued to update them all the way along along with the owners and and and obviously the public and yeah we thought just putting those things out on social media would have would have been not a bad thing to do and it's been very well received and just another thing on the horse and it shows how tough he is gareth like troy would know this as a trainer you can have a horse that steps on a shoe and has a bruised heel and they can stand in the back of their box and sulk for three days and this horse has gone through a mighty um fall and he's bright and well and just he's it's like he wants to get out there and work so he's built of something different and um you know the prep is over for him but uh he'll be back in the
Speaker 2autumn i'm sure take us through the inner sanctum of chris waller and how he deals with the the pain and and and also the the heartbreak of losing a horse like i hope he wins and it wasn't just the chris waller camp like um there was a lot of pain and a lot of pain and a lot of pain and a lot of there was a lot of emotion there with the yulong team as well so yeah for sure take us inside the inner sanctum out of the trainers and how do you deal with that with your staff well chris waller
Speaker 4yeah it was very he's got some uh terrific people behind him and around him and at a team that can just help him get that information straight out which is vital everybody everybody nowadays wants everything instantly so that the quicker we can get that sort of information out the better um and chris waller is he's going to feel like that feel that like we all do like he just because he's a bigger trainer and he's got a lot more horses than the love them just as much as we do um so and i also ran into mr jean uh after the races and he was he was he was devastated you could tell that he was and you think about the horses that you long scott but um everybody feels it like this so it's so important to have the right people helping you
Speaker 2do that sort of stuff and the staff members that look after these horses they're like they get up at 3 34 o'clock to to feed them and then they go and walk them in the afternoon they they obviously build up a devastating you've got you've got an association with a
Speaker 4group of um participants that have taken a horse to the races that day that they think that she's you know she's a good chance of running a really good race and all of a sudden they're going home without without her it's you know it's it's devastating and
Speaker 2well onto the mrc and racing victoria because they tell me that they get in contact with the trainers quickly and they provide counseling for everybody yeah which is fantastic and needed it's good yeah um we had the stewards inquiry there that was conducted yesterday which i thought was terrific we mentioned this on monday we thought like wayne was saying that uh wayne hawks on the means test that it could probably be his latest saturday before these jockeys come together for the inquiry but we thought why would you wait until then when um the the two jockeys that fell they look like they are okay to talk now you get rachel king on zoom um and then obviously they did the hearing there yesterday which was great but they found out it was just a racing incident calvin that there was no one to blame and um those jockeys that were interviewed rachel king um james johnston joey mcneil mark sarah and i think it was ethan brown who wrote saran was also interviewed and obviously there was a little bit of movement inside from rachel king and then james johnson also was part of that interference but they decided it was a racing incident now um your horse was involved do you agree with the
Speaker 3stewards look it's of course i agree with the stewards i think we're very lucky in victoria to have a you know rob montgomery and his team are one of the best in australia i think there's um certainly this is a good lesson for racing victoria and the stewards to get an inquiry done quite quickly because from my personal opinion and watching the couple of angles that we can see which is the chopper shot and i was certain that young james it was in the wrong i thought he'd ridden out taken out the the hind quarter of rachel king's horse rolled in just it looked very messy and and it shows that they've got obviously much better angles than we all can see and when i read that there was no findings and it was a racing incident i must say i was really surprised um but i spoke to mark zara at length yesterday afternoon and even jai afterwards and mark explained it and he said it was just a number of things there was four or five little things that happened all at one time and he said mate your horse was so unlucky to fall because when the when the impact happened he basically got through that and it was opening back up and mark was about to go for him but he just clipped the heel of zaran so half yours near front heel hit zarans as it was all opening up and he was just he said you could do it a thousand times and 999 he
Speaker 2wouldn't fall um i agree with you there because there is a lot of people with opinions and they're trying to look at the footage that they've got troy and they haven't probably got the angles the stewards might have plus they haven't got the information coming from the jockeys yeah and i reckon the jockeys would have been emotional as well after the race and they think well um because when you had a look at it when you looked at it for the first time it looked like there was interference definitely from either king or johnston that caused the the fall yeah and and
Speaker 4i did that straight away so i watched the replay four or five times but at the end of the day you need to leave it to the experts that's what they're there for and that's why we do have the best integrity team you're not one of the best it's i reckon it's the best in australia so you know we leave it to them let the expert do their jobs we've all done our jobs and then we can comment on it afterwards knowing that they've done the best that they could they've done it
Speaker 2earlier without the jockeys information i don't think so like you
Speaker 4can't do it without the jockeys information you know you need mark and you need mark fitting well and um you know if if the timing wasn't right it wasn't right we've got a there's a process for it all to go through and we need to respect that process and mark mark and joe were
Speaker 2probably part of that yeah um and like you you're a big winner at the end of the day after your horse walks away but um geez your horse looked like it was traveling sweetly um calvin that's the hard part isn't it yeah it's look at the end
Speaker 3of the day it's a horse race and it doesn't matter does it but um we're just happy that we took a horse home um mark did say on the phone he goes he said mate he was about to explode i don't know if he would have won but he would have been right i don't know if he would have won but he would have been right i don't know if he would have won but he would have been right i don't know if he would have been right there i'm telling you you would have left the race course just thinking the melbourne cup is his to win even with the weight so anyway doesn't matter we'll be there next year yeah all
Speaker 2right and kingswood was the winner by the way that was a massive effort from that horse i don't know if the caulfield cup form will stand up heading towards the
Speaker 3melbourne cup your thoughts there oh look it's hard to say it won't i mean obviously kingswood's not going um well done to gavin what a performance and hasn't he been a good horse for him and going back through his form he's um hasn't ran many bad races did he
Speaker 4buy him online or was he kingswood was i believe he was sent out to manny raymond and then and then
Speaker 3he was transferred to gavin and he's had him since 2024 i reckon yeah he won a benchmark 78
Speaker 2yeah um won
Speaker 3the first start yeah then
Speaker 2won the coonji at his next start now he's a caulfield
Speaker 3cup and he went to this went to sydney running like the hill stakes and things like that what a group one in new zealand he's been a bloody good horse so um look yes um zaran and those horses yeah interesting how they how they go um saint george etc but it always stands up i think they always said that last year
Speaker 2yeah well it hasn't like caulfield the caulfield cup has been a fair guide to the melbourne cup you've had without a fight and half yours that have won it i think um night's choice um night's choice no he was a bendigo cup wasn't he they vowed and declared for any second i think in a caulfield cup and went on to win the melbourne cup but from market expectation it hasn't been a great race for the melbourne cup the caulfield cup um but i don't i don't i don't think we're going to see the caulfield cup winner i mean the melbourne cup winner come out of the caulfield cup this year um 16 minutes past eight we're going to take a break we'll continue on the wednesday agenda straight after this this is giddy apple thanks to bet 365 join the
Speaker 1conversation text us on 0 4 9 7 3 6 7 3 6 live across australia this is giddy up with gareth hall
Speaker 2now welcome back to giddy up gareth hall with you troy caulson's calvin mcavoy um we're going to get to the cox plate barry draw in just a moment it was an interesting barry draw i like the way that they do it where the connections have to choose their draw um yes cal night's choice did that yeah finish 15th yeah i apologize no problem yeah so he finished 15th in a caulfield cup midfield in the bendigo cup and then won the melbourne cup they let the shackles off they did yes um and then they won the melbourne cup they won the melbourne cup they won the melbourne cup um 19 minutes past eight this is what zach purton he's he's been under a little bit of um not pressure but he's being criticized for his ride on carring rising depending on who you ask and has divided them the racing fans opinion really um did he do a good job or um did he ride it to the carring rising to perfection there in a way in the in the everest is what zach purton had to say yesterday on giddy up
Speaker 5well i think under the circumstances and you know obviously i've only got a split section second to make that decision um not like everyone else who's had a number of days now to analyze all the data and pull it all apart and i think under the circumstances i made the right call you know and i had to make that on the spot i gave the horse his chance to still be able to run
Speaker 2a race so what did you make of all of that the commentary after the everest with carring rising um it was a shock defeat in a way i know tempted was the second phase of the race but i think under the circumstances i made the right call and i think under the circumstances i made the right call um it was a shock defeat in a way i know but everyone expected really carring rising just to turn up and and win the
Speaker 3everest again um i watched it in the caulfield um trainer's room and uh yeah i was really surprised he didn't look to have this the speed early um and obviously they went very fast there's no doubt the jocks up there they didn't want to give it give it to him easy which is what you expect but i thought the horse was as david hayes said a mighty run uh he was really happy with the run just not the result and you probably swapped barriers you swapped the results well done to him but i think under the attempted chad and the team there she's a mighty mare but i don't think he lost any admirers and it was just a tough run from a wide gate where they didn't let him have anything any favors you were there on everest
Speaker 4day troy yeah amazing so many parts of it that i absolutely loved a couple of little parts that i didn't love yes um just a bit of the crowd was booing when car i can't yeah i didn't hear
Speaker 2that but i couldn't believe it i heard a bit of it i was i was up
Speaker 4high and i heard a bit of that and i was it was kind of you know and i was thinking what are they booing and i was it was a bit disgusting it's not right because um you know he's absolute superstar champion we need more horses like him but maybe maybe it was the crowd i don't know they're a bit younger and you know maybe they're being a little bit parochial for um for uh the local horses and the locals so maybe we get that and they just need some education on on how we need to act at the races but
Speaker 2sometimes you know i felt like uncomfortable i didn't actually hear the booing but when i heard about it was i i really couldn't believe that they would be carrying rising but it's a sporting contest yeah yeah champions get booed all the time if you're going against them but i found that we need to cop it on the chin yeah i found like um But at least they're invested. Yeah, well, that's it.
Speaker 4And it's a very different crowd. You would have noticed that as well. I'm not sure how we keep all those young kids coming back to racing. They keep on coming back now at the Everest. They come to the Everest, but we need them coming back every second week or every third week or three times a year.
Speaker 3Tell you who ran well was bloody Headwall. It wasn't that exceptional. I wonder whether he'll come down to the sprint or whether they'll go the Russell Paul.
Speaker 2I think he'll come down to the sprint because he doesn't get 1,300. He's a good trainer, Matthew Smith. Yeah. So what did you make of Cain Rising?
Speaker 4Oh, he's outstanding. Some say he's
Speaker 2not the same horse. No, I think that's garbage.
Speaker 4Eight weeks in between runs. Yeah, and you think about all the other horses. All the other horses bang like perfect preparations and stuff like that. Maybe they'll need to put another race on in Hong Kong. Or does he have to come down here early?
Speaker 2Do you think David Hayes?
Speaker 4Maybe he needs a lead up, and that might have helped that a little bit. But, gee whizzy, it was wrong by half hour. If he'd won, if he'd won, if he got over the top,
Speaker 3it would have been, you know, like we'd just be applauding everyone and everything. Yeah, exactly. Look, I'd say David Hayes feels sick because the horse got beat. But, gee, he's gone well, and credit to him for coming. And how good did he handle himself? I know it's been very well said about the media. And, like, that's a lot of pressure and a lot to put up with when you're trying to actually do your job and train the horse as well. Does he, so from a
Speaker 2trainer's perspective, so you look back and you think, well, I think it's. And we've asked Sack this on a few occasions. He's probably not the same horse. I don't think you can disagree with that. He's not the same horse here in Australia that he is in Shatin. So is that to do with the rein effect of track or a little bit more given to the ground? Is it the way that he turns the corner here at Randwick? Or is there a situation where, like a football coach, and David Hayes will be analysing, geez, how do I travel this horse to try and get him to perform like he does at Shatin?
Speaker 3Look, I think the most, J.D., I spoke to J.D. about it yesterday. Like, he's in quarantine for five weeks. In that five weeks, I don't think he sees another horse. That's a lot for a horse. Like, I mean, that can, you know, horses are herd animals. So it's, I think that probably plays a huge part in it too. So maybe next year, David will bring a string out to Australia, bring four or five, and maybe that'll make him feel a bit more like home. Not all horses are as good travelling. Well, Romantic Warrior did that.
Speaker 2He always had a travelling partner. Remember, it was meant to be competing in general.
Speaker 3I think David did. He did bring one horse, one other horse down as his partner. But some horses maybe aren't as good when they do travel. And it's hard to say. I mean, all the ratings experts, and that's much over my head, this rating stuff, but they'll say he didn't produce the same rating as back home. But sometimes they just don't when they travel.
Speaker 4Yeah, exactly. And think about the opposition as well. Like, what's, you know, Jolly Star, Headwall, Tempted going to do to those horses up in Hong Kong as well? Like I said, it's different for different.
Speaker 2It is the toughest. It's the toughest job in your game, I would imagine, to travel a good horse.
Speaker 4Yeah, it's never easy. They need to settle in and relax and take to the water. And, you know, there's so many different things that go into it.
Speaker 2I'm looking forward to that champion sprint now because you'll have, I reckon, Jolly Star will be here. Tempted will be here. Headwall will be here. I reckon Jimmy Star has a strong possibility of arriving here because I don't think he qualifies for the bonus there to compete in the Russell boarding. So I think for the first time in a long time, we might. We might have the edge on Sydney here with this Champion's Day. And Champion's Day is quickly becoming the biggest day of the spring from a quality perspective because it is called Champion's Day for a reason. And you're going to get the best sprinters, Autumn Glow will rock up in a Champion's Mile. And most of these horses that we'll talk about in just a moment for the Cox Plate will stay on.
Speaker 3Yeah, I think Lee Jordan and Kylie Rogers and the VRC would be just so excited. And that initiative, a couple of. I don't know how many years. I don't know how many years ago the Champion's Day thing started. Four or five now. Four or five.
Speaker 4Gee, hasn't it built? Yeah, it's built. It just goes to show, had we said, oh, no, no, this is the way we do it. The McKinnon's always on Derby Day. When they've changed things and how good is it now?
Speaker 3Welcome to Victoria, the greatest state in Australian racing. And it's no doubt going to be the best day.
Speaker 2Imagine if Moonee Valley and Flemington merge, you could like have a $20 million like Cox Plate on the final day of the Flemington Carnival. Far out. Into a $10 million new market. I was just choked on his cornflakes. We'll get. Oh, sorry. I've just knocked my headphones off. He might knock your headphones off. He's having a good morning. Shut up, Gary. Yeah. Yeah. So Champion's Day and Fisher will be there as well. You'll be getting. You got backstage tickets last year. No, I didn't.
Speaker 4I thought you did. No, I was actually up in a box last year to watch Fisher. But it was a great fun because they cut the beers off. Oh, did they? Yeah, we got up there and next minute Fisher comes on and they say, oh, sorry, no more alcohol. So I have spoken to Kylie about that. Hopefully they can fix this issue. But you know what? Hopefully. Take an Esky. We can fit an Esky.
Speaker 3We'll sneak an Esky. Oh, yeah. Yeah.
Speaker 4But hopefully they get a bit of good weather this year. Just a little bit of luck and it's going to be bursting at the seams.
Speaker 3I thought the ponchos gave a real nice touch.
Speaker 4Yeah. Yeah. But how many did it hold back though? Imagine an extra 10,000.
Speaker 2It was a really appreciation day. There for racing. As a racing lover, I was so proud of the game with how far it's come there last year because they talk about the Everest and Everest is a great day. And hats off to everybody involved there who have innovated and made sure this is one of the great days on the world racing calendar now, Everest Day. But there's nothing like Flemington. Like if you went to Derby Day last year, you want to talk about a young crowd. Yeah. That was outstanding, wasn't it? There was a young crowd decked out in the black and white, respecting tradition. The rule from pride of Jenny was something that will live with me forever when she took off at the 600. So I've been to both Everest and it was a great day and it was a great atmosphere. But Derby Day and Cup Day and that Champions Day when Gigi Kick and all those boys, those racing fans there on the front lawn road when the champions started to lift, I think racing was in a good place. And there was a younger crowd last year at Flemington. Oh, especially Derby. Warfield, it was a young crowd. So I think racing's in a good place. Are you surprised, however, that they're only going to get like, when we asked Michael Brough on Monday when he joined us, I thought we'd get, before I knew any of this with the capping and all that, how many people can turn up to Flemington for Cox Plate Day? I thought that 50,000 would be a number that would be a no brainer.
Speaker 3But he said 35. Yeah. I suppose there's two ways to look at it. Like the VRC want to protect their bird cage. They want to protect their bird cage area for their big four days. Is that the right thing to do? Or is it, should the view be from the VRC, this is another way, another day to open our doors and make some money. Maybe they're concerned that people, if the people go to Cox Plate and spend their money on that day, they won't come to Cup Week. But I still think, you know, if they get 35, it's going to be a good day. But I thought it would be more.
Speaker 4I think Michael was playing it down a little bit. I think they just opened up to the, there might've been a little bit of confusion with whether VRC members are allowed to go and they've cleared that up in the last couple of days. So if you are a VRC member, get on down, you know, it's going to be an amazing, you might not ever see a Cox Plate run at, at Flemington again. It's like, it's like, yeah. Will you be there, Gareth?
Speaker 3Are you heading back to Sydney this weekend? No, I'll be there, Kelvin.
Speaker 2It's sort of like, you're like, you got your, yeah, you're playing your local cricket club and you let the opposition play on your cricket ground for a practice match and you give them the second wicket and make sure like you don't really open up the fridge for them. And, um, so it's a bit like you. You've got to make sure that, um, you've got to, um, have your cricket ground ready to go when it matters most really.
Speaker 3It's like when them trainers like Bjorn Baker come down and he calls us Mel Boring, but we actually don't let him into the proper trainer's room at Flemington. He's in the visitors and, um, maybe this time we'll let him in where the real beer is.
Speaker 2It's going to be a great day anyway, Cox Plate day at Flemington. I can't wait for it. And, um, it is the home of racing. I don't care what you say. You can go to Flemington, you can go to Randwick and you can go to other racetracks around this country. But Flemington. When you walk through those gates, the aura of that joint, um, is unmatched in this country.
Speaker 3Have you spent much time on the rooftop, Gareth? No, actually, you know what? Sometimes I do. He's too busy working.
Speaker 2Yeah. Right. Bit like you. I've never been up there. No, you wouldn't. Of course you haven't. It's right on. Johnny Course gets up there. He's outstanding. You see me throwing my hands in the air at the end of the day. It's right on 8.30. We're going to take a break. We'll come back and we'll analyze the Cox Plate next.
Speaker 1Join the conversation. Text us on 0499 736 736. Live across Australia. This is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 28.33. If only we could have the microphones on during the ad break with Troy Coulson and Calvin McAvoy, the president of the Australian Trainers Association, the vice president of the. Just looking at some of Troy's plates. Sometimes we have to agree to disagree. Yeah. Flemington, looking at the weather now, I said to the Giddy Up family on Monday, I promise you I won't talk about the weather until Friday because it's just a waste of time. It never really eventuates as it's predicted on a Monday, but I'm reading it out right now on a Wednesday. Possible rainfall, three to 20 mils. So Josh Holt is. This is Saturday. But Josh Holt told us on the last week saying that if it's three to 20 mils when you're reading your weather report. It's a 75% chance that it'll be three mils and then 25% chance it'll get to 20 mils.
Speaker 4Mine's telling me seven mils, which means that will be, uh, Flemington a good four.
Speaker 2Yeah. Perfect. And it's a difficult, it's a difficult, um, um, weather report for Liam O'Keefe because it's beautiful weather, um, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. And then there's rain predicted on Saturday. But if the rain doesn't come, he's still going to irrigate. He sort of can't take that punt. I don't think it matters at Flemington.
Speaker 3You can irrigate and it'll be fine. It's, uh, as we know how well it drains and we know he's not too bad at the Cape of Lamb. So I think it'd be fine.
Speaker 2And the most even tracks, I don't care what anyone says is when it rains during the week and then the track curators don't have to worry about watering their tracks.
Speaker 4Yeah. It's the most even watering. So watering obviously, uh, with sprinklers is artificial, whereas, um, it's very natural. It's coming down by rain.
Speaker 2I like the way how they do that Cox Plate barrier draw. It's add so much interest. Now there was like, I couldn't believe they chose barrier 10 Faleana and not like, I'd love to have, like, I know Bjorn Baker was taping himself when War Woven, he goes, oh, they're going to pick barrier two. We've talked about our strategy. I would love to have a camera on James McDonald when they pick barrier 10 Faleana instead of barrier nine. I know it's only one barrier, but that can make a big difference. That can make a big difference, Troy.
Speaker 4I watched it and it was, um, I'm not sure who the lady was, but gee, I don't think she needs a castigating this morning for doing that. Does she? The poor bugger. She, I saw her go up and she's about to put it on nine and right at the last second she changed it and put it on 10.
Speaker 3Maybe 10's her lucky number. Yeah. On her birthday.
Speaker 2It's not a great, it's not a great lucky number to have in a. I reckon she'll still win. Yeah. Faleana. Isn't James
Speaker 3McDonald the best jockey in the world to be fair? Well, I reckon he's got the,
Speaker 2he's got the toughest draw now. I reckon. Ryan Reyes and Eliana have got the toughest draws.
Speaker 3I love, um, Chow Wolf, barrier three. Perfect. I just thought if he, if he can, um, travel, Joe Pride's a great trainer. I think Sir Delius is spot on. Been watching him in the mornings. He looks amazing. I'm hearing different reports. Nah, I reckon he's spot on. He had a good strong go up yesterday.
Speaker 2I had some mail on Monday and this is, I don't know if this concerns me or not.
Speaker 3Is this like your Carl Jung rising mail last year?
Speaker 2No. Well, that was a man. That wasn't him. That was a man, you idiot, Kelvin. Um, but the, the, the mail that I got from my spies at Flemington, now I've got a lot of spies there from trainers to strappers to track work riders. So I can't reveal my sources, but he's had the blinkers on at the start of the week. So I asked Wayne Hawks about that. I go, Wayne, I'm hearing that he's got the blinkers on at track work on a Monday morning. He goes, oh, that doesn't mean anything, Gareth. I thought, well, but I'll ask you trainers. Surely there's something in that.
Speaker 4Oh, not really. I don't know.
Speaker 3I mean, no, I think there's definitely something in it, but no, I do, but, but I mean, he doesn't have them on for Saturday, does he? So, so maybe Gage has had a look at him in the blinkers and. Oh, I'm trying to make a decision whether to put them on. Yeah. He actually ended up galloping yesterday with no blinkers. So, um, yeah, I mean, I, I love seeing all the horses like that have blinkers first time, but unfortunately he doesn't have them on on Saturday.
Speaker 2Hmm. Um, is it a situation that is there a, and this is just my opinion, my, is there a situation where you can have a bull that has been to like a, a few wars of, of recent times and he's done a mighty job and can they just go, oh, I've just had enough here.
Speaker 4Of course they can.
Speaker 2I'm not going to put in like I used to. A hundred percent.
Speaker 4Yeah. Send me the stud. Yeah. Yeah. A hundred percent that can happen. So, and you see it, you do see it quite a bit when you're with that, when, when you're training them, you know, you, you, you can see them sort of switch off and they just don't want to do it anymore.
Speaker 2And the way that he worked, Craig Williams made sure that he just knew that he was there. For a, a, a solid piece just to say, okay, mate, you might just have to have one crack for me, one more last crack for me. And we've got to get ready for Saturday.
Speaker 3I think everyone's, I mean, first of all, blinkers are a training tool. Like we gallop, if blink, if a horse is galloping on their own and we think they might need to do more, they might have a set of blinkers on. The other thing is it was only three starts ago. This horse beat, uh, won the Queen Elizabeth and beat Autumn Glow. He's had two runs getting ready for, this is his grand final. The Cox Plate was always going to be third up. I reckon everyone just needs to ride.
Speaker 4I still don't think he's going as good as he was last year.
Speaker 2No, I'd be taking him on and he'd probably win by five, but I know there's been, I know there's been some commentary about the quality of the Cox Plate, but for me, this is one of the most, I can't wait for this Cox Plate because you know why it's got it all. For one, we know it's going to be a truly run race. So the best horse is going to win when you've got, and I love the way that they went about picking the barrier for land legend, barrier 12, because as Kiramar pointed out after he won the mountain race. In power that the small field suited him because he could just do what he wanted to, to get to the front. There was no one that was going to take him on. And from barrier 12, Ethan Brown can just leave him alone, look after him, um, and then get to the front under his own steam, which is. I question marked it.
Speaker 4I just thought, you know, you go to barrier six, you go to it and I get the hustle and bustle, but you're still, you're six closer. It gives you the chance to jump out as long as he jumps good and get across. Easily. I don't think he's going to get it as easy as he did the other day.
Speaker 2Is he? Well, I think everyone knows that he's just going to go flat out.
Speaker 3I thought it was a really smart decision. And the other thing is you've got four or 500 meters. The, what you're taking out is the risk of him missing the start, getting crossed. And then you're, you're four pairs back on the inside. Can't get anywhere. And then it's a non-event for him. We saw two starts ago when he went back, it was a nightmare. So I think that I think light infantry man and, um, and what's it called? Uh, land legend. It's the person. Perfect barriers for them.
Speaker 2Do you know what? Like if you could choose the barriers for these horses to make it the best possible race, I reckon they've done pretty well. I think it sets up now to be a classic. Is St. George backing up as well? Yeah, he's backing up. I did some, like, I don't know about you guys, but I can, I can understand how people would be a little upset that these two horses, Middle Earth and St. George are in the Cox plate.
Speaker 3I suppose Kieran will just argue. He did it with Gold Trip. Um, Gold Trip ran in the Caulfield Cup, the Cox plate and won the Melbourne Cup.
Speaker 2But don't you need to be proven wait for age group one horses to get into a Cox plate. Um, unless you're a three year old. But Middle Earth is a hundred to one. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker 4Realistically, you can't see Middle Earth. Should, um, did you ask Mr. Browell about the decision?
Speaker 2Do you know what? I didn't think about that at the time. We're under, we're under a little bit of pressure. I'm sure he'll be back on your show soon. And, and, and Wayne was firing questions at him left, right and center. I've, I should have got to the Middle Earth question, but I know there was debate yesterday. I was hearing out of Flemington that there is a possibility they're going to leave Middle Earth out. I don't know. Would you have left Middle Earth out, Troy? Um, look. For the Cox plate sake. It's a wait for age championship of Australasian racing. I think in, in, in days gone
Speaker 4past, they probably would have. Um, so I don't know. I'm a, I'm a bit of a. I would have left him out. Yeah. Oh, I'd probably over quantity. Yeah, that's it. We, we want the best race that we can possibly have. But if Kieran thinks that Middle Earth should be running, we probably need to listen to him a little. Do you know what? He probably win.
Speaker 2Yeah. Johnny Allen flashes down the outside. You know, I can understand both sides of the argument. I, I know I'm sitting on the fence here, but I would probably, if I was on the committee and they said, well, and you've listened to Kira Mara on giddy up throughout the campaign and Middle Earth, I would say, all right, then if you want to give him another run on Cox plate day. Go to the Moonee Valley Cup. Yeah. Um, who wins? I reckon I'm leaning towards a lot of victory, man. And I haven't given up on my old mate, Cosby Crusader. I'll tell you the finishing order.
Speaker 3Yeah. Eliana wins. So Dillia second, Chow Wolf third.
Speaker 4Okay. How does McDonald ride Eliana? Uh, he'll be sick as he rides everything else. Yeah. Extremely well.
Speaker 2Yeah. I don't think there'll be, I wonder if like he, I reckon it's a really difficult ride for McDonald. Um, mate, you need to relax. He'll be fine. What do you, who do you think wins Troy?
Speaker 4I like Eliana. I think she just wins. I've, I've been saying that for, um, quite a while. And I think that she, I just think that she's
Speaker 3the perfect prep.
Speaker 4Hasn't she? Oh, like, and her last run was outstanding. Her run through the line. She'll be spot on for this. Ready to go. Chris has a bit of a knack of, um, getting the ride on grand final day.
Speaker 2Who's got the toughest challenge. Andrea legal, Joe pride backing up Chow Wolf after a grand final and a King Charles, and then traveling to Melbourne to compete in a cock plate or cosmic crusader to run again. Um, and back up after a, a, a core fuel cup.
Speaker 4Andrea, in my opinion, that it's kind of, it's an afterthought really, isn't it? Well, I think, I don't know if it is.
Speaker 2It could be like,
Speaker 3I think I'd rather be in Chow Wolf's corner. I think the way Chad looked after him a bit late, it was obviously spoken about, they thought about it. He ran very well.
Speaker 2And then traveling to Sydney, how much will that take? Traveling to Melbourne?
Speaker 3Yeah.
Speaker 4It's it. I don't think it's six-year-old Gowdy. If it was a three-year-old Philly or something like that. He'll have to do no work.
Speaker 3Whereas cosmic crusade is going to be seventh up and he ran well, but, uh, yeah, I'll be, I'll take Chow Wolf.
Speaker 2All right then. Um, it's going to be a great race. Can't wait for it. And, um, what time is it on Saturday? I haven't, I haven't put out a time just yet, but. It's normally at 3.30 or 4 o'clock. o'clock or something. No, it's usually later.
Speaker 3Caulfield Cup's always fun. 515, I think this is about 450 or
Speaker 2something like that. I think it's the second last race, isn't it? Last year they played it late as it went into the Channel 7 news because they wanted to give it the chance to rate the highest that it could possibly rate.
Speaker 4There's a good question. Would Middle Earth be in if it was at the Valley from David? I reckon that is a good question. Maybe because it's at Flemington.
Speaker 2I want to be on Middle Earth for a Melbourne Cup. I love his preparation. I reckon he'd been trained at the minute for that great race. He ran third last year, didn't he? Yeah, he was mighty. We're going to take a – we've got a few questions coming through. Do you think that the three-year-olds can be competitive? I think they can be competitive.
Speaker 3I don't know if they can win.
Speaker 4Yeah. I like War Waven for second. I would have loved to have seen Blind Ray's draw a bit better, but I still think he'll run really well.
Speaker 2All right, then. I'm getting a lot of feedback for sitting on the fence here. Unbelievable stuff, really. It could be me and my audience from time to time. I'm going to take a break, and we'll come back with plenty more. Troy Causton wants to have a chat about. Burgess. He's going to come off the long run, so I'm looking forward to this. Don't go anywhere.
Speaker 1Live across Australia, this is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall. Welcome back to Giddy Up.
Speaker 2Gareth Hall, Troy Causton, Calvin McEvoy. Calvin was just mentioning that. He should be on the emergencies. Budget's not big enough. Yeah, Troy said they wouldn't have you, which is fair enough as well. Now, let's get out. We need people that are funny. We're going to be a little bit more serious here now. Wayne Hawks was, did you hear Wayne talking to Michael Brough? Excuse me. Yeah, on the memes test last week. We talked about mergers. Michael Brough was very good. He answered a lot of tough questions as the CEO of the Moonee Valley Racing Club, and this is what he had to say when I asked him, I think it was me, I asked him about whether the three clubs should consider to merge. Do you think the clubs need to merge? Why? No, I'm just asking you.
Speaker 6What's the benefit? You've got three metro clubs in Melbourne. We've all got our separate identities. You've got a separate membership base. Sponsors. Yeah, there's a little bit of crossover. The sponsorship's an important piece as well. Deals with advertising. Yeah, what's the benefit of the three clubs merging up?
Speaker 2Wayne Hawks. It's like Dickie Neath is popping up. Troy, you heard that interview. Yeah, of course. What did you make of it?
Speaker 4Two words to Michael. Why not? Yeah. Why not? And I totally get it. Because he doesn't need to. Let's look at it. How do we know that he doesn't need to? And I'm not saying that our clubs lose their identity and we merge all the members and that sort of stuff. I think it's really important that, you know, let's retain the three clubs, but let's merge services. Let's have a look at that. If we can save, all right, and the figure's been bandied, 40 to 50 million. Even if that's not right, what if it's 15 million? What if we can save 15 million by getting together and having a look at it? That's 15 million that we can put back to participants, okay? So I'm here every day for the trainers that I represent, but not only the trainers, the owners, the punters, the staff, the strappers. If we can save. If we can save 15 million, there's 1,400 maidens a year in Victoria. So if we save 15 million, that's 11,000 roughly that we can put on each maiden in Victoria. Charles Kassar goes to the races next year, next week. He's bought a yearling last year that his owners have been paying up for the whole time. All of a sudden, he can go to the races and race for 50,000 for a maiden, gets his win. It entices everybody to put it back into the industry. Buy him another. You know, Rhys Goodwin buys one off Inglis Digital. He can take it home, get it going, get it up and going, win a maiden, win another $50,000 maiden, and just everything just keeps turning over. If we sit back and we don't change and we all say, no, we don't want it, how do we know we don't want it? You need to look.
Speaker 2Well, you heard him.
Speaker 4He didn't answer the question. Why not, Michael? Don't get me wrong. He did answer it later on.
Speaker 2He goes, basically, we don't need to. We're out. We're a financial club that's going to be one of the most powerful sporting clubs in the land after this development's all finished. Why do we need to do it?
Speaker 4Because we need to get more back to participants because we put the game on. Yeah. We put the sport on. And if we don't put the sport on, if it becomes harder and harder for us, he doesn't have a product to show.
Speaker 2Yeah. So then he's got members. And my argument to all this is that then why don't you take it to the members? MRC members, the Moonee Valley members and the VRC members and ask them.
Speaker 4Let's do a study. Let's do a study and see if we can save some money and give it back to participants. What's the big deal about that? I'm not saying that we need to, you know, shut down Moonee Valley and the members. I'm all for it. We need these people staying as members and we need VRC members. But let's have a look at where we can save and what we can do to make the sport better. So what would you do? I'd get someone that's a lot smarter than me.
Speaker 2But have a look. Haven't they done this? Didn't Mara Morrison come on and tell everyone that they've done this study and there's a report that's been done, an independent report that tells you that there would be $50 million that would be saved? And then you talk to Moonee Valley and the VRC and they say that's a load of rubbish.
Speaker 4Let's have a look. Let's see. Well, they've had a look.
Speaker 2But no one, who do you believe?
Speaker 4Well, I'm not sure. Let's get it out there. Let's put it in front of me so I can have a good look at it. And then I can say if it's not there, it's not there. And I'm barking up the wrong tree.
Speaker 3Tell you what, Gareth. You can count five microphones in this studio. Imagine you had you, Michael Brow, Vin Cox, Tanya Fullerton, and Aaron Morrison. That would be a really good conversation. Do you know what?
Speaker 2It's probably 101 to get that to happen. And you don't have to get Troy Causton, says the president of the Trainers Association. You had Troy, Jonathan Martins, Aaron Morrison. You probably have Vin Cox and you'd have, and then Michael Brow, or you could have the chairman, Adam. So you could have a few people that you could. I don't know if this table would be big enough.
Speaker 3But what's wrong with having that sort of conversation for the industry as a wider.
Speaker 4That's all I'm talking. And I'm not, I'm not here to be disruptive and I don't want to shut any club down. I want to make racing as good as we can possibly have it.
Speaker 2And you know, I think that the clubs do work together. I think there's a lot of work that goes beyond closed doors that we don't know of. And Aaron Morrison, when he took over the job and he's been very good at this with the hat, they have, um, um, they have workshop spaces. Basically that all of the different clubs and bodies like the Trainers Association, the Owners Association, the Jockeys Association, you regularly meet, don't you?
Speaker 4Yeah,
Speaker 2we've got, uh, no,
Speaker 4it's coming up. We've got a forum coming up again on the 2nd of December.
Speaker 2And so when you have those discussions, I think it will be on the agenda. We're going to talk about more of this straight after the break. The phone lines are going off. The text message, the Garris Horsetown text message line is going off as well. Um, we're going to take a break and continue on our Wednesday. We're going to take a break and continue on our Wednesday agenda next. It's interesting here. This is the Wednesday agenda. The different numbers that get thrown around. Um, but then I did ask, I did ask, uh, Michael Brow. I go then. So do you put more money back into? The prize money. If you become the, the, the, the successful club, which you, you, um, want to become. And obviously they're in a good place at the moment. So, but he goes regarding the prize money. That's not their job. It's the PRA's job, which is racing Victoria.
Speaker 4Yeah, I get that. But if, uh, they also get club funding as well, but if we, if we, if we make it better, we make it more efficient. And as I said, if we, if we are saving this money back end, why are we not looking at it?
Speaker 2He said that if they did like get rid of, say, if you did merge, um, if you did merge the clubs, he says that like, you only, I'd be only saving like a million and a half, a million and a half. He said, Oh, who said that? Michael Brown, a million. And if you got rid of like the racing manager and a few other people that doing, I don't think we need to talk about who we're getting rid of. No, no, but that's what I'm saying. That's what, if you're merging everyone together, not sure that's right. That's why it's from 50 million to a million. That's what I mean. He's
Speaker 3the CEO. What's better for the, what is, what would be for the betterment of the Victorian racing industry? Okay. What would, what would make the Victorian racing industry better? No merger or merger? You tell me. Well, I think that if you merge the services, yeah, a hundred percent.
Speaker 2That's what I'm talking about. Yeah. Just depending on, um. So we all agree. So we can move on. Yeah. It's, um, 8.57. It's quickly approaching, um, nine o'clock and we still got plenty more to talk about. We'll have to get that round table. We'll have a little discussion, but I reckon that would be a lot of fun and we'll get Troy involved as well. I'm going to talk about the Geelong Cup. It's become a great race. Well, it always has been a great race, but this is one of the better Geelong Cups that we've seen for quite some time. Of course, it's in the second year with the golden ticket. So looking forward to that. Um, so we'll discuss all of that. Um, plus we want some, oh, you've got some numbers on Twilight Racing. Yes. Yes. They've got everybody talking last week as well. It's 8.58. It's great to have your company on. All thanks to Bet365. join the conversation text us
Speaker 1on 0 4 9 7 3 6 7 3 6 live across australia this is giddy up with
Speaker 2gareth hall we won't have enough time to go through all the text messages on the gareth horse and hound text line it's a busy hour coming your way we're going to have a chat to tom magny the boss of coolmore australia to talk all things the breeding game with tom how that breeding game is going in this country um so always interested to catch up with the boss of coolmore here in australia um and then of course we'll wrap up breeding bloodstock i should say we'll wrap up the wednesday agenda and josh mclaughlin will also join us with his best bets coming out of the jump out so looking forward to that josh mclaughlin making his debut on giddy up on this wednesday morning and then it's a big bag of tips after um 10 o'clock this morning so we'll try and find you a few winners there for one of the biggest days on the country victorian racing calendar and this is a great geelong cup i'm looking forward to it calvin terrific race yeah it
Speaker 3is it's going to paint the paint a bit bit more of a picture i think it's good having these races closer to the melbourne cup isn't it then you know there's winning your ins sort of well you don't like that
Speaker 2you don't like the winning your in races that are six months ago at the end of the autumn i don't not like them but i mean
Speaker 4they're successful have they been yeah how many are running i'm not going back got that horse
Speaker 3doesn't he that's a good one yeah yeah and is it running over a mile this other yes i like that i like that from graham i think that's really good it's you know he could have obviously nominated it for the 2500 but he thought we're on track you know get more out of the mile race than a trial doesn't need to have a big a
Speaker 4long distance
Speaker 2race he should have went in the cox
Speaker 4plate what about what about vorban first up
Speaker 2that'll be some effort yeah it would be some effort you're afraid he's everyone was trying to tip me in a caulfield cup it's been well supported to win a geelong cup yeah yeah um i reckon there's a point of law is it is it the one they're talking about it's definitely starting i find that really interesting he drew barriers six in the mooney valley cup saturday and he's drawn barrier 18 at geelong and they decided to go to geelong and not to flemington on saturday
Speaker 3comes from 13 though
Speaker 2doesn't it yeah um but he's very good small fry yeah they got a big opinion of him solcom i think with these internationals is that you can understand their rating and you can try and predict what they're going to do and you can try and predict what they're going to do might do in this country but you just don't know how they've traveled no point of law has lost dumped the rider a few times there at werribee didn't stop versus down no it didn't but that was on the tuesday it wasn't two weeks out yeah um but it's good it's good
Speaker 4that we get to see them as well before yeah before the melbourne
Speaker 2cup if they go that way 21 into 11 for solcom lit steals into 550 from seven for danny o'brien um and then you got omni man is another international 19 one smooth operator he won the mooney valley cup last year he didn't run in geelong because it was too wet or there was i think he was entered for both but he goes to geelong um and he's won a geelong cup before who's that one smooth operator yeah okay um
Speaker 3that'd be interesting right yeah
Speaker 2so yeah who are you
Speaker 3tipping um point of law you what have you heard then kelvin oh just that he's a very very good horse so yeah um you know they were very keen to get him into the the corfield cup he didn't get in um but he's a very very good horse so yeah um you know they were very keen to get him into the corfield cup um obviously they would have paid decent money for him good form uh he's probably the one how how
Speaker 2difficult is it to get a horse off a plane and i know that kiramar has been training point of law um at harry eustace's for a little while but like to train a horse out of werribee i've never done it no i've got no idea i'd like to do it yeah have you heard it like have do you talk to trainers that that you're great mates with jack turnbull for instance
Speaker 3yeah look i think i think it's okay i don't think it's particularly a hard thing to train them out of werribee other than it's just if the horse handles the trip or not i mean we buy horses from from europe and from new zealand and sometimes even from from coming over from new zealand they're just a bit out of sorts and they need to have some time so these horses have been bought on the premise that they're going to be running in the spring carnival that probably puts a little bit more pressure on the trainer to you know try and get it right and if your horse you know gets off the plane and is a bit tucked up and probably not eating great you know you're under a bit of you know you've bought a tried horse off of a trial from new zealand and you're under no pressure so i don't know um but i'm sure it's not that difficult if the horse is handling it well
Speaker 2troy um what are you asking me about geelong about training a horse out of that international complex you've been you've been reading too many text messages flying through i'll tell you i was
Speaker 4looking i thought i was going to give my tip which i'm going to tip who are you tipping i'm tipping let's deal that's what i was looking at and you went on for too long then i just lost concentration yeah yeah but um paul lansky uh i'm going to give you a tip i'm going to give you a tip i'm going to and danny o'brien and obviously vow and declare fame hopefully uh they can have a good result with
Speaker 2here and these sources aren't cheap like um text messages come through decent money for point of law four and a half million wow so they have to win a pretty good race to get double a couple of pretty good races yeah um let's have a chat about twilight racing what did you get what was the feedback that you got from last
Speaker 4week troy the feedback on the uh line was quite uh some of the
Speaker 2from the participants
Speaker 4no some of the um text messages were quite horrible saying that it's going to be on my head when somebody runs off the road no no no that wasn't fantastic but uh obviously obviously we don't want that but i can tell you gareth that vaughn lynch has let us know that after two thursday twilights have been a total increase in wagering of 21.4 yes so that's it that's telling you exactly what we've been banging on about people prefer to punt in the afternoon but it's
Speaker 2an expensive it's more expensive to put on those meetings because obviously for us no and for racing victoria as well because you got a you got staff that have to work later um that's all relative yeah 100 so um obviously they're a success the twilight race meetings from a turnover perspective otherwise racing victoria wouldn't do them yeah um but what feedback did you get from the participants that listened to you last week and talking to sam freeman because you both had different views
Speaker 4yeah very different views and that's why we're on the committee and i i respect sam's view but um you know when if we people hate change a lot of the times people hate change but we need to we need to put the show on for the punters that are that's what makes our game what it is so yes we need to look after participants and i'm not saying that we don't but maybe we need to adapt maybe participants need to look at starting training later you know heaven forbid that happens yeah but let's let's lean into what uh the punters want and if it's increasing wagering that increases returns back to participants and that's what we need to do and everyone's happy calvin yeah it's
Speaker 3um you you hung up when we had this debate there
Speaker 4no you didn't you're
Speaker 3weak you didn't you didn't want
Speaker 4to
Speaker 3have a
Speaker 4crack
Speaker 3at sam i had to get on a plane um there's all you know i think we've got enough information and sam is on the ata committee with troy and i so he's seen enough of the information provided to us from racing victoria and from sports bet and um who are putting a lot of money into the industry here in victoria that um twilight racing is here to see you next week stay uh probably needs to stay um but i can see both sides in a way i don't particularly like it personally of course my staff don't like it and it's easy to say it's easy to sit here and say well um you know give that person the morning off tomorrow we are in a staff crisis like we're under the pressure i could do with more staff at both flemington and ballarat and it's difficult to find the right people so when the pressure comes on about having to give that person the morning off which you need to do or you need to try and do it only creates more tension and pressure on the crew that are working back at home so i don't know what the answer is it's it's obviously here to stay twilight racing we need to adapt i know we need to adapt but we need to you know that we need to also find a way to help us trainers and the people uh putting the show on to you know get more staff and better staff and that's why there should be a racing school in victoria um funded by the industry and i know that's been loosely spoken about but i think it's a good idea to do that previously but they have one in britain british horse british racing school and when sam and i and and jack and ben and everyone was working in new market you'd get the staff arrived they've done a 12-week course uh where they literally go and live in the racing
Speaker 2courses in victoria they're not getting they're not
Speaker 3done look with all due respect to to those courses they're not the same they're a couple of days here and there putting a head coat on these are this is an intensive 12-week um course where they stay at the the racing school and they're not getting they arrive into the stable pretty well educated and can straight away do the job yeah and i think the industry going forward needs to figure out how to do something like that
Speaker 2and so it sounds like this is just me listening to both sides of the argument here troy it sounds like they would love to adapt trainers like calvin and sam but they don't think they have the staff to allow them to adapt all
Speaker 4right so let's let's work out let's look at it and how do we make that work yeah you know let's let's go back and say okay if we start at 7 00 a.m is that going to attract more people to come and want to work in our industry i think it is and i've been banging on it for about it for a long time but we again at the end of the day we get a lot of pushback uh a lot of people that don't want to change but if that if that's what we need to look at yeah but troy we've tried to get
Speaker 3flemington to push the hours back and we can't get another half an hour at the vrc yeah
Speaker 4that's that's different and we're why is it different because because they've got an eba with their track staff and um you know there's 16 of them and and what's what's good for the work What is for the betterment of the industry in Victoria? Mate, I'm with you and we should be pushing back and we should be finishing at 10 or 10.30 at Flemington and it's something that we will be working on over the next three months.
Speaker 3Trainers and stables need more support and if we can't get half an hour extra at the VRC to train.
Speaker 4We can. Kylie's already said that we're going to get an extra half an hour straight after this carnival and then we can renegotiate for next year. We've got to, we've got the, we need to stop letting the tail wag the dog. We need to be upfront and we need to push this really hard. If we want real change and we want racing to get better, everybody needs to open their eyes up and have a real good look at what we're doing.
Speaker 3Gareth, I don't think the Victorian racing industry has ever been in a better position in terms of people that are wanting to improve and to actually, you know, like the amount of time and effort Troy's putting in, in the ATO. That's not a paid gig. He's doing that as well as running his own business. I just think it now needs. To come to the party where everyone can sit down and work collaboratively. And if we can do that in five years time, we're going to be in the best position out of anyone in the world of racing.
Speaker 2Um, and you went to Tassie recently as well.
Speaker 4Yeah, I had a really, I've had the most interesting week you've ever seen. I was lucky enough to, um, go to Canberra last Wednesday night and sat at a table with, um, six, six or seven politicians that are all very keen on racing, which is, we need, we need these guys. We need, we need these guys behind us and, and working for us. And then I was also lucky enough, not lucky enough, a greyhound racing down in Tasmania. I'm not sure if everybody knows, but it's in real trouble and the current liberal government has teamed up with the greens and they're trying to get rid of greyhound racing down in Tasmania and everybody can sit back and think, oh, well, you know, it's greyhound racing. It doesn't affect horse racing, but it, my damn sight does. I can tell you if they take greyhound racing away from Tasmania, it's going to take out a hell of a lot of the funding. And I wouldn't be surprised if horse racing fell over. So I'm doing my utmost as the federal president to try and make things change. I met down there, we met, uh, Stephen Bell and I went down and met with, uh, Pauline Hanson and, uh, Barnaby Joyce. And then we also met with, uh, Richard Dowling and Dean Winter. How was Pauline? Um, and amazing, absolutely amazing. And I, I judge people, Gareth, for how I meet them. I'm not big on, um, listening to, you know, what people's perception are in the media and that sort of stuff. And she's, there's no doubting her love of Australia and Australian culture. Uh, I spoke to her about the lack of, um, people coming through our game and she looked me in the eye and she said, right, how do we fix that? We need to get racing back into schools. Um, and I said, well, schools, we used to do Melbourne cup tours and everything through primary schools because it's a wagering product. Now, all schools have moved away from that because they make us feel. Bad because that's how they want us to feel. So, um, she's got, she had a fantastic, um, outlook on horse racing and, and came up with some really good ideas. And, and Barnaby Joyce, I mean, geez, he's so passionate, um, and gave us some really good ideas on what we should do for horse racing. He'll be running the country soon, this bloke, won't he? I've got no. Troy, yeah, 100%. You know, I'd be leaving
Speaker 2the training game and you'd be on the One Nation ticket before you know Troy Causton's. And so we, we, if you're. If you're a racing fan, vote for One Nation, it sounds like. I think the most, the scary part about the racing industry and you talk to people in Tassie is that if, if there's an election and there's not a majority government, then racing can be vulnerable like it was in Tassie. It's really, really scary. And so Jeremy Rockcliffe can come out and say, he supports all three racing codes and he's there for them. And all of a sudden he needs the Greens to help him with the majority, to get a majority government. And then he throws them under the bus. Yeah. Um, and then. He lies to them and then basically says, we don't really care about your livelihood. We don't think you're, you're, we think you're cruel animals and that's why we're going to stop greyhound racing. Yeah, which is garbage. It's absolute garbage. And it's disappointing for a man to change his mind because of self-interest. That's all it was.
Speaker 4Right. So now everybody listening, get on your email, send, send, send an email in and it's not about supporting horse racing. It's a supporting racing in general. Like let's not let these people tell us what we're doing. And we, we, you know, how many thousands of jobs are going to be gone if that falls over in Tasmania? I'm going to spend six or seven minutes with these text messages
Speaker 2on the Garrett's horse and our text line. I know Louie, I'm going to be running behind time, but we've got over 300 messages in about half an hour. I'm a chance of getting a parking ticket. Well, you're a good chance too, but lucky driving a Ford, they should let you off. Yeah. Um, what about the public? If a day at the race has become more affordable, it sustains the whole industry. That's from SJ. Um, this is my opinion. However, Victorian racing doesn't have a car. They don't have a leaderboard, basically too many cheats. Phil Andes was the leader, got things done. He deserves a statue. Is the gap between Australia horses and K-ing rising smaller than the gap between Hong Kong horses and K-ing? Yes. Yes. I think that's a very good text message. Hi guys. This talk about merging is insane. Well, for the VRC and the Moonee Valley Racing Club, at least, especially the latter, they're rolling in it. The MRC on the other hand is definitely need handouts. I'm not sure that's right. You've got that a bit wrong. The MRC is flying. It's one of, it's probably the most powerful sporting club.
Speaker 3The MRC is so well, they've, you know, they've got pokies, they've got pubs. They've done business really well.
Speaker 4Have you asked for their, um, their, uh, thoughts on the merger?
Speaker 2Who? MRC. Yeah, I think that they would be, I think they're a lot more open to it than the other two clubs. Cosmic Crusader, the perfect platform to map a beautiful race. If he can slide in midfield, one off the fence, you'll get every chance to storm home, particularly with the forecast for wet on Saturday. Do you reckon he can get the job done and win? And I'm think I'm the only one that believes in him really. Cosmic Crusader? Yeah, you are.
Speaker 3Yeah. Calvin? Um, look, I've got others ahead of him, you know, yeah, he's, he's a very good horse.
Speaker 2Do you think that, um, one smooth, smooth operating valet king in the Melbourne Cup, two old stays who've been to the Cup before, I think that they would need to improve. On the booing, in the Caulfield members, there was a couple of groups of people booing most of the Aussie horses, including Jimmy Starr and Tempted. Um, hey, Gareth, can you ask the fellas what they think of St. George? I thought he was picking up towards the line. Is he a big chance in the Melbourne Cup? Well, he's going around in the Cox plate on Saturday.
Speaker 3I think he's a great, I mean, good horse. Yeah. Um, he ran very well and, uh, I don't know how it goes Saturday, but he'd be a good chance if he stays tomorrow.
Speaker 2Some of the online stuff directed at Jabez Johnson on social media was disgusting.
Speaker 4That's a disgrace. And, um, Paris Stanley actually contacted my wife who contacted me to try and do something. I think about it. So hopefully, uh, it was dealt with.
Speaker 2Yeah. And there's good people around Jabez to help him through all of that.
Speaker 4Yeah, exactly. He's a, he's a young kid and, um, he was on a horse that, that caused a mistake. Leave it, let the process work out. He was found to, um, not be at fault. So I heard he was getting death threats and everything. Like it's a disgrace. Yeah. People need to get off their phone and, and cancel their Twitter accounts if they're doing that sort of stuff.
Speaker 2I like your panel's expert opinion on the suspension of Jamie Mellon on her Sydney ride Mahuna. Compared to Rachel King's non-suspension on her ride in the Caulfield Cup. Um, you probably haven't seen it. I haven't seen it. I haven't seen it.
Speaker 3Um. She's getting suspended a bit, Jamie. Yeah, she is a little bit.
Speaker 4She tries hard.
Speaker 2Um, super show with Troy and Calvin. Any news on the racing blogger this year? That's from Merv. Logsie. Logsie. I don't think he's coming out this year.
Speaker 3Logsie. We wouldn't be able to afford him anymore. No, he's turned it up. He's bigger than Troy Corson.
Speaker 4He was, he was certainly did a fantastic job though last year, didn't he?
Speaker 3I thought he did a really good job.
Speaker 2Hi, Gareth racing. Victoria is not in a great place racing. Cut week may be, but, but for the rest of the year, it's not. Um, in Victoria, declining turnover, increasing costs, declining wagering, declining prize money. Too many, I don't know. There's no decline in prize money, I don't think. Yeah. The prize money hasn't moved.
Speaker 4Wagering, um, holding.
Speaker 2I don't know where that person gets their information from, but that is wrong. Wikipedia. Yes. I don't think listening to the trainers say they need more support. Try being a small owner, breeder boys that know it doesn't make any sense to do, but will. Never stop because the love of the horse so much. How about the trainers association gets together and looks how they can help small time breeders race their horses. That's what I'm trying to do. Organizing an extra half an hour, um, on the grass for a course, proper Gallup. We might ask Tom made any of that question. Anyway, we can't get through all of them. Have any winners for us, boys. Uh, it'd be much appreciated.
Speaker 3Pretty quiet this week. We've got, um, I think we've got a nice chance on Friday in. I think it's going to be, I think it's going to be a little bit better. I think it's only going to have one runner on Saturday at this stage. We're going to back the polo up, um, and give him another run and, but I'm pretty quiet. I'm going to be admiring the sport and probably, uh, we might
Speaker 2get you on SCN track with tags and the boys on Saturday afternoon. If you're doing nothing, I need a couple of red bulls.
Speaker 3Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.
Speaker 2Um, so Sabrina on a Friday. Yeah. I'm Troy.
Speaker 4Uh, I, I've got a couple of jewel acceptors this week, which we don't usually do.
Speaker 2It'll be happy with you.
Speaker 4Uh, tell him I'll try and make our decision as quick as possible, but, um, all business runs in a very winnable race at Cranbourne on Friday night. I think she is probably going to be our best and will be very hard to beat.
Speaker 2Okay. And there's a few questions. What's full confidence doing? Full confidence. We're going to, oh God. Do you know what? It wasn't one of Harry's great rides, but he couldn't do anything really. He was stuck behind horses. Oh, I don't know about that. Yeah. But anyway, do you know what I, it was one, it wasn't a great ride by Harry, but do you know what I love about it? About Harry coffee, the way that he bounced back the next day, he delivered a couple of beauties there. Oh, don't worry.
Speaker 3I love that he feels it, and he knew that it wasn't one of his best. She's a nice filly. The problem is we kind of needed her to win that to get into the vanity. On Derby Day, we're still going to progress forward and hopefully gain a start, 1400-metre stage race. I think Regal Ambition's going there. So she's a good filly. We may even nominate her for the mile race or something. We want to get her to a stage race. Enjoy Geelong today. I might ring James McDonald up and see if he's available to ride her.
Speaker 2Yeah, I reckon he'll be right and going. Put a word in. Yeah, 100%. He's listening, isn't he? Yeah. He should be.
Speaker 3Yes. What about, say, anyone is at Geelong? Ruda Royale might bounce back. Yes. He's later in the day back on firm ground, but we're sort of each way chances there. All right, then.
Speaker 2Thanks, boys. Troy Causton's Calvin McAvoy. Tom Magney will join me next, the boss of Coolmore Australia. This is Giddy Up, all things Tibet 365. Welcome back to Giddy Up, Gareth Hall with you. Great to have your company on this Wednesday morning. Geez, that was an action-packed Wednesday agenda. Speaker 7I just wanted to say before we start that I noticed that you're very well-dressed today and that Troy and Calvin were wearing baseball hats. But to be fair, I'm on a fitness group with both of them and they posted workouts from Turkey a couple of weeks ago. So I think when the baseball hats come off there over the spring carnival, we're going to see a dramatic difference. I might even go myself.
Speaker 2Well, I have to get to the Geelong Cup today, so I had to dress. I'm like I'm going to the races because I've got to get straight there after 12 o'clock. But were you at Everest Day there, Tom, on Saturday?
Speaker 7Unbelievable day, the Everest. It's just going from strength to strength. It's getting bigger and bigger. And you go to the races these days and you feel like you're old in your mid-40s. Yes, yes. It says a lot about the game and it's got people all over the world watching it. And I've obviously a lot of people that have, you know, are coming down for the Melbourne Cup from overseas this year to see what it's all about and that haven't been before. And I'm saying, you know, as amazing as the Melbourne Cup is, you've got to also do the Everest. People are watching racing in Australia and seeing the product that we have. And it's, you know, it's getting worldwide attention. And I think, you know, fair play to everybody, you know, it's Peter Blandy's brainchild. But to everybody, uh, at DATC, um, I think, you know, hats off. Uh, they did a really, really good job. And, uh, racing is just going from strength to strength.
Speaker 2Um, I see that you went with Gigi Kick. Obviously you did a deal with Jonathan Munns. Um, and you would probably would have liked to have a three-year-old representing you in, in this year's Everest that unfortunately didn't go to plan with Guesthouse. But, um, I guess it's one of those years that sometimes it can work and sometimes it doesn't work out. When you've got a slot for an Everest and you're trying to get the horse that you want into that race.
Speaker 7Very much so. Obviously we had Guesthouse penciled in, uh, Guesthouse, uh, you know, he sustained an injury, uh, in the Golden Rose. Uh, he's back here at the farm, uh, now recuperating. Uh, he'll be out for a couple of months, but as Mick Price said, he's a very sound horse. Uh, he's got the most wonderful temperament. Um, so he's handling it. Well in his stride, but, um, yeah, shame we didn't have him, uh, in the Everest. Um, but God, uh, tempted was, was very impressive. And, you know, carrying rising what, what that horse does for racing, um, you know, to see them battle it out down the straight was fantastic, but yeah, you'd like to have a horse obviously in your slot, but giga kick Jonathan Munns. Uh, we have a great relationship with Jonathan. Um, so that was, uh, an easy decision there, but look, it, it, it wasn't our, our initial plan and, and these things happen. And, uh, you know, you move on, but, um, yeah, we'll, uh, we'll, we'll, hopefully we'll be there again next year. And do we get to see guest house in the autumn? Uh, that, that's the plan. Um, but you never know. Uh, he's, as I said, he's sustained the injury and he's going to be, uh, in, in box rest for quite a while. Um, and then we'll see how we go after that. But, you know, the horse has to recuperate and there's, um, there's a lot of water to go under the bridge. But I was talking to Mick Price on telephone this morning and we just got to take this day by day, but it is looking like it's going to take a bit of time, but as I said, he's a sound horse, he's got a great temperament and, you know, the way he won, um, his first start back, uh, the San Domenico, uh, he was ultra impressive that day. And, um, you know, the, the golden rose wasn't to be, um, but, you know, we, we're very excited as we know he's come back at three. We know he's come back. He's a good horse and, uh, these things happen, but, um, yeah, we'll, we'll be doing our best to, uh, to get him back, but God, he's a, an imposing horse. He's very good looking and we'll just have to see, but I, I, I, I would say if you're listening to Mick Price, um, you know, we'll, we'll be as positive as we can, but, um, yeah, it's, it's a wait and see game.
Speaker 2Um, Tom, obviously Coolmore is one of the biggest empires, if not the biggest empire in wheel racing and, um, you're the cool guy. You're the Coolmore principal here for, um, Coolmore Australia. Um, how is the, the breeding game going in this country? Um, uh, how would you assess it at the moment?
Speaker 7Um, well, I suppose you could say that at the moment, um, people are a little bit negative on the economy, um, uh, a little bit negative on the economy, but I've seen that happen overseas. And you only have to look at the sales in America this year. Uh, and you have to look at the sales in Europe this year. I mean, they're smashing records. They're knocking it out of the park. Um, and I think, you know, my answer to that is that, um, when there's effectively a little bit of a drought, right. Those that, that sow the seed, right. When the rain comes, they get very well rewarded. And I think that it's important, you know, that, that people keep breeding their mares because, you know, when, when things, when the tables turn, um, those people will be up in magic millions, uh, you know, effectively popping corks where some might be at home looking at, at empty paddocks, if you know what I mean. Yeah. And I think that you only have to look at, at the Everest. Um, at the weekend and, and the, the Melbourne spring carnival coming up racing is healthy, is very healthy here, if not the healthiest in the world. Yeah. And, um, we have an amazing product. Prize money is very good. Overseas investment is very good. And I think that a hundred percent, uh, we're going to be going to the magic millions, um, Easter sales over the next couple of years, all those sales and, and just really, really realizing that the reason that these records will get smashed is because, you know, Australia is in a very healthy place, has a, sorry, has a very healthy, uh, industry and, you know, it's, um, I think there's a lot of green shoots to come. And as I said, um, a lot of positives and things that around the world, people are very jealous of what's going on in Australia. And, um, yeah, I think, uh, it's, it's, there's a lot to take out of it.
Speaker 2What would your advice be to, um, the racers? bodies to stop the fall crop from falling at the moment. So what do you think should be done to to obviously um change the trend there with our fall crop here in this country um i
Speaker 7think that as i said the biggest thing is that you know breeders realize that that there's no upside in leaving that mare uh empty as i said when when uh the economy comes back um and what is already a very strong uh industry here will get stronger and stronger and stronger and if there are uh lesser foals there's obviously lesser there's lesser um when you have more demand and you have a smaller fall crop like these prices are going to get stronger and stronger and as i said the people who breed their mares will be rewarded and and the people at home uh looking at empty paddocks or at the magic millions uh watching everyone else's draft they'll regret it yeah because the you know there'll be champagne corks popping in some in some places do we
Speaker 2do enough for the smaller breeders in this country you know i speak
Speaker 7to henry field uh quite a bit and henry's you know got these ideas that that you know we should be doing more with the likes of bobs uh and things like that to incentivize them um so yeah there's there's plenty of of ideas out there that is getting discussed at uh border levels like the tba and places like that um but i think definitely that we should be doing things to incentivize uh breeders but as i said in saying that uh you know we have a very healthy product uh prize money is very good um the the sales companies do an excellent job year in year out and you know the the sales prices aren't falling they're getting stronger and um you know people are getting rewards and
Speaker 2you've got a one hell of a roster there at coolmore um like home affairs has just been unbelievable really to kick off his stallion career um um st mart's basilica had a wonderful day there on saturday with saintly dancer leading all of the way in the group 1000 guineas um so what about the the sale for your stallions during this breeding season have you been happy with how they've been performing um so far
Speaker 7well i suppose you look at a horse like shinzu and he was the best uh full he had the best of the full sales so i think that uh come the magic millions and the uh english sales next year that um shinzu will come out on top um if he was a stock price i would be uh piling into him and i wouldn't be selling him uh he's obviously a very well-bred uh golden slipper winner um you know who's obviously been well supported and i think you look at a horse like home affairs um he he's gone into another level but the frightening thing about him is that he's just keeps on accelerating uh in what he's doing and getting better and better and i suppose you know we were making hay with him and in the foaling units now you're probably harvesting diamonds with a horse like him but you look at a horse like switzerland um switzerland obviously won the the cool more like home affairs did and i would put my hand on my heart and say that switzerland is having the best foals of any stallion that i've seen in cool more australia in my years here um so i would say that the mares are breeding their horses back to him the the mares are falling they're having very good foals they're coming back to him so i would be go very long on on switzerland um you know uh but then you look at at at switzerland and you look at at shinzu and and being by schnitzel galileo or sadler's wells had you know a good son in a great son in galileo um galileo had a good son and it was frankel uh i'm invincible had his best son in home affairs you know these are all great stallions and i think that when you look at at schnitzel and you think okay i've got shinzu in switzerland i think it's um history has a tendency to repeat itself and i think that um we will be looking at two very very exciting horses there um obviously we've got you know city of troy uh he's very popular very good um foals on the ground but the horse i'm very excited about is superset yeah um superset is uh he's going unbelievable he is the the names that are lining up outside his door every day um effectively the the the girls outside his bedroom every day would make james bond jealous because you took a big and that's what you have to get with him yeah yeah we did but but you know you look at him and and we're very fortunate that the the best breeders are supporting um superset and and everybody who comes to see him absolutely loves him and as i said he's got uh he's got the best mares in the country coming to him and um we're extremely grateful for that but you can't make uh this happen without having the support of the breeders that we do um and and the people involved in these stallions you know effectively we are in a golden era at coolmore yeah um you know last year was probably the toughest year uh we've had you know we lost uh fastnet rock obviously had been retired but so you think and and wooten bastard so you think died uh yesterday one year and you know but we're very fortunate in that a number of years ago we've had you know we've had you know we've had you know we've had you know we've had you know we've had you know we've had you know we've had you know we've had you know we've had you know we've had you know we went out and and we we bought the mares and and we bought the stallions um and you know we have a very very serious lineup of stallions in you know switzerland shinzu superset home affairs city of troy and i was at chris waller's yesterday and he said to me that the best two-year-old that we have is the best two-year-old that we have and he said to me that probably a st mark's basilica out of tiggy wiggy i think the james mcdonald uh didn't need his morning coffee after that uh gallop so so obviously say marks did very well the other day so he's a very exciting stallion going forward but as i said we're we're in the golden era but also we we have the stallions we we have the mayors we have the clients but more than anything is that we have the staff and the people and nothing can happen at coolmore globally without the staff that we have and the families that support them uh we're just extremely grateful for everything that they do um you know at the stud farms we start early like the racetracks in the morning and these people are given their everything and at five o'clock 5 30 they're still working um and they've got a smile on their face it's a long season they don't complain and and you know we get to stand up on on the podium and pick up the trophy but it really is those people back at the farm that make everything happen and we are so grateful for them
Speaker 2um tom the melbourne spring carnival is about to get into full swing and we've got no representation from belly doyle this year um what does racing victoria need to do to have a chat to yourself and and your legendary father john magnie and aiden o'brien to change their mind and sending a horse like mini hawk to japan and get her to come to melbourne for a cock's plate
Speaker 7um obviously you know the spring carnival is um unbelievable uh you know at flemington and you'd love to be there um we'd love to be there but but you know there there are there are things that are in place things are improving but um you know um we we just are probably it's probably just not suiting uh what we're doing at the moment in terms of you know um the way we can do things so uh what we're doing is probably at the moment uh going to places like japan um but you know if we have the right horse to come to australia and and and the the systems are you know can can suit uh the way we do things for example like i think that aiden can can train the horses to the to the way he can you know um we'll be there um we're not we're not in any way uh boycotting or sulking or anything like that but it there's there's other jurisdictions that probably better suit what we're trying to do and and it's it's easier to get there but you know we're we're um we're massively uh we'd love to be here at the spring carnival and we'd love to be here at the spring carnival uh absolutely love it uh like uh jp manis's horse is coming down from europe this year um joseph his horse is coming down this year and we'll be cheering him on and it's uh you know maybe maybe it'll be next year yeah um but uh i know aiden uh joseph has obviously um uh won the melbourne cup twice and i i think it's definitely um there's There's a cabinet in Aidan's trophy cabinet there for him sometime.
Speaker 2Yeah. Is there a chance that we might see a horse like Constitution River or the son of Star Spangled Banner, Gestad, standing at Cornwall next season here in Australia?
Speaker 7A hundred percent. Obviously, Gestad, he could definitely come here. He's got a very good pedigree. We know he had the ability. I think I'd love to stand a hundred percent, but I know that Anthony Mitten has been knocking on my door a few times, but I don't think I'll be letting him have that one. But yeah, Mitten reminds me of these things regularly. So yeah, Constitution, Gestad, there's plenty of horses there to look at. But we have horses within as well here, like St. Goddard. He. He is going to the Coolmore, all being well. And, you know, he's so close to that, to getting that job done, that if he was to win the Coolmore, he'd be massively exciting as well. Hey, tell me, you worked very well, St.
Speaker 2Goddard, yesterday. Very well.
Speaker 7Yeah, I got a little WhatsApp from James and from Chris. They're very happy with him. We've been so fortunate to win the Coolmore with Merchant Navy and Home Affairs. Switzerland, it really is a stallion-making race, that Coolmore, and we're very delighted to be. Very excited to be associated with it. But yeah, if St. Goddard can win that, I think the next day we've got on. We're getting on a plane to go to the sales in Keeneland in America. But definitely, it's the one race I would love to repeat.
Speaker 2Now, Tom, I know you would have heard a few whispers. Can you help us battlers out? Why? What are you hearing from Ireland regarding Joseph O'Brien's team here for a Melbourne cap?
Speaker 7Joseph obviously has a fair army coming down this year. And, you know, Joseph, he'd have it all worked out well. He wouldn't be bringing anything down that doesn't have a chance. He's done it twice before. So, yeah, I'd be watching him very carefully. But I know I might even pick him up from the airport and just chat to him on the way in.
Speaker 2Do you reckon you'll ever hand over the keys to Joseph when Aidan says, I've had enough? Well, probably Aidan will probably never retire, really. He loves it that much.
Speaker 7A hundred percent. But, you know, it's amazing. You see, you know, Dad got involved with Aidan when I think, God, Aidan might have been 26 when he came to Coolmore. Yeah. And I remember Joseph was there when he was like, you know, a young kid and he was almost at the age of 10 years old. You could have almost called him the assistant trainer. Yeah, he was that knowledgeable. But, you know, there's Danica, there's Sarah, there's Anna. The whole family is talented and yeah, there'll be O'Briens putting names on trophies for a long time. But I know one thing, I'd say I'd be retired well before Aidan's retiring. I know that.
Speaker 2Well, Tom, thanks very much for your time. Tell Aidan that he owes me a night. He's going to host a special. He's going to do a sportsman's night with me on a Monday night before a Melbourne Cup. So he needs to get that Melbourne Cup. It's the only race he really hasn't won.
Speaker 7No, it's definitely on his radar. Yeah. It's very much on all of our radars. But as I said, there's people working behind the scenes and hopefully we'll be there again. But as I said, it's, you know, racing in Australia is in a really, really healthy place. Prize money is phenomenal. The crowds are the envy of the world and you know, for Coolmore to be in Australia, it's a huge privilege to us and yeah, long may it continue. Thanks very much for your time.
Speaker 2We really appreciate it, Tom. Thanks. There's Tom Magney, the boss of Coolmore Australia. Time for a break. We're going to come back with plenty more bag of tips not far away as we preview Geelong Cup Day.
Speaker 1Gareth Hall with you.
Speaker 2If you've got a tip for us at Geelong, let us know. The Geelong Cup meeting. Mark Hunter will join me shortly to preview the Geelong Cup meeting. 0499 736 736. So send in your tips. Text messages there regarding your selections or top selections there for the Geelong Cup meeting. You might have a winner there for us at Geelong. 0499 736 736. We'll take a break. On the other side of it, looking forward to catching up with Tom McLaughlin. He's going to be our special guest. Josh McLaughlin, I should say. He's going to join us straight after this. Really looking forward to catching up with Josh McLaughlin from Jig Racing because he is a man that can identify a horse at the jump outs and he's going to be joining us on Giddy Up each and every Wednesday. He joins us now. Josh, thanks for your time, mate. Welcome to Giddy Up.
Speaker 8Very good morning, Gareth. Good to be with you, mate.
Speaker 2How's things? You're going to give us a tip for Geelong Cup Day as well, but we're going to start our segment each and every Wednesday with the maiden victory of the week. So where are we going here?
Speaker 8Yeah, I think you don't have to look too much further than just one o'clock back to last Friday, Gareth. There was a three-year-old maiden there over 1,000 metres. It threw two of our best jockeys in the land out there for the one ride in Marks R and Damien Lane. It's a brilliant day. Just won the race. Strike package was second. I don't think there was much between. I don't think there was much between them on the night, but I think two very good three-year-olds. Strike package is a $1.7 million wooden Basset Colt, which would be much up to your liking. And Glenn Dacis is a three-year-old for Stewie Cameron, and he's a gelding, Gareth. He ran very, very good time. He was just outside Jigsaw's track record. So while he's a gelding, without knowing for sure, I'm sure he's attracted plenty of interest to be shipped off abroad.
Speaker 2So that was the best maiden of the week. What about the best maiden of the week? What's the best jump out horse that we should be following from a punting perspective here out of the jump outs?
Speaker 8Yeah, well, look, I'm not creating any, you know, I'm not coming up and being a genius here by saying that Angel's Fury is probably the best one that we've seen from the jump outs in the past week and a half. She's always been an exceptional track worker. She's probably one of the better track workers in Victoria, but she looks to return super this time in. She's had two years of preparation. Her last one, she had Ethan on. She settled out the back. She just got to the middle of the track. She let down. She ran very quick time. She's ended with two races this weekend, Gareth. One, a benchmark 70 over 1,000 metres at Cranbourne on Friday. It's a pretty hot 70. There's horses like Parker who's unbeaten in there. Valoroso is very good to see the oldest in semantics, even Rosatic for Reece Goodwin. So it's a good 70. But the other race we've got at Nom 4 is a 1,200 metre race up straight. So I personally, as a punting guilty side of you, certainly hope they go to the 70 because on Friday night, because we haven't seen her over 1,200 metres. And as we know, the straight can pull up a horse from time to time.
Speaker 2Yeah. All right, then. Angel's Fury. She's always had big wraps on her. So we'll follow her closely. And you've got winners for us on Geelong Cup Day, mate. I've got my pen ready to go.
Speaker 8Yeah, beautiful, Gareth. And just before that, another jump out horse for the punters to chime in. It's already been really well backed this morning, but it's a first starter at Mornington. It's in race four. It's the Clayton Douglas number 10, and it's called Regal Harry. It's been five into 320 as I've just sort of been sitting on hold here to you. So I'm not sure how that happened. It might have been you. But anyway, this horse ran one of the better last in a jump out I've seen recently. So there seems to be a fair bit of intent here. Draws gate two. I think they'll show intent, even though they haven't in their jump outs. Put him in the first four, and he should be hard to beat. So that's one for the jump outs, Gareth. But on Geelong Cup Day, I was going to say Aurora Bell, but she's in the unbackable odds now. She's been heavily backed, 250 into about 165. So if you did want to get involved in that race, I think you could do worse than possibly just playing exactors there. I was still with Dagger, who comes over from Tasmania. I think she's been missed in markets. Got a good fresh record. Liked her jump out at Mornington recently. And I think Yum's ready to win as well. So my one little query with Yum is, Geelong can tend to be very much biased to horses that, they're on pace, particularly when it's good ground. So where she gets in the run, it's a little query. But I'd play exotics in that, and then I'd go to race eight, Gareth. I think Immortal Stars, good play at around that $7 mark. She's had two nice jump outs. Ethan Brown jumps on, gate one. Can't see her getting any further back than possibly leaders back here. And going off the jump out, my most recent one when she went across the line with Splashback, I think she's right in this at an H-way post.
Speaker 2Beautiful. Love your work. Thanks for that, brother. We appreciate you.
Speaker 8Good on you. it, Gareth. Thanks, mate.

Speaker 2with gareth hall welcome back to giddy up gareth hall with you on this wednesday morning it's a busy hour coming your way we'll preview geelong cup day um with mark hunter in just a moment so looking forward to that it's a one hell of a meeting there for this geelong cup meeting we've got the warwick farm preview with mickey gannon we'll go right across australasia to try and find you some winners with bag of tips today so um it's coming up shortly but you'll see australia's and the world's best at the sydney everest carnival where racing hits its peak of course we just had the running of the everest there on saturday in sydney we've got the golden eagle coming up in just under two weeks time the invitational for the mayors this week and ray hickson from racing new south wales joins us here on giddy up ray hello to you g'day gareth good good
Speaker 9to chat to you mate so what an everest it was yeah
Speaker 2and what a day it was it was it was it had it all really um packed house and then one of the great upsets really i know that she was the second favorite tempted but i think the majority of that 50 000 strong crowd thought that carg rising would win again
Speaker 9i think most people did think that um the tempted effort was outstanding in her own right gareth i mean i think we aren't we underestimate that but i think we're we underestimate her effort to win the race as well but oh look you know carting rising um you know there's been a lot of talk about his well there's a lot of talk about the ride i guess and well i don't think zach could have done a whole lot more really um he gave the horse as best chances he could on stances and he only failed by a head so um look let's hope he comes back next year and we can uh we can do it all again
Speaker 2yeah um he's definitely coming back next year if everything goes to plan with him anyway so that will be one hell of a build-up as he looks for redemption carring rising in 2027 but um it has become the biggest day in sydney racing one of the biggest in the country now everest day because it's not just the everest but you got the sydney stakes the cosi osco is a great spectacle for the country trainers and then the king charles where we got to see the country's best tour strutter stuff in autumn
Speaker 9glow yeah it's quite a good program overall isn't it um fairly good program overall i think it's going to be a good program overall isn't it um fairly good program overall isn't it um fairly good program overall isn't it um um fairly you know plenty of different highlights the country people get their their moment in the that's always great to watch um the i mean arafil won the race but i don't um i don't know if people realize but there are a bunch of 10 guys from scone who picked chains of love to run in that race um i had a chat to one of them a couple of them you know they're all sort of you know your average kind of guys and and they've come away with a good chunk of that million dollar first prize to go between them because they're all sort of you know they're all sort of you know they're all sort of you know they're all sort of you know they're all sort of you know they're all sort of they bought a five dollar ticket in the cosi osco and um you know they got the right to choose so i mean yes arafil won the race but i think it was a little bit more than that and that goes that goes a little bit unnoticed i think about the cosi osco because it's just you know quite often average people behind the behind the winners that we that we see up on the stage so um i'm looking forward to this saturday actually while we're talking about randwick um spring champion stakes day and and the invitation um the five diamonds prelude and races like the craven plate and we get to see some two-year-olds in the kirken plate the spring champion gareth has a field um with two fillies global gold and proxima day um barrier draws made it look a little bit interesting that should be uh out pretty soon and the invitation obviously that field is it's fairly well known um interesting to see if jerry gong can go one better than she did last year and um look it's a good little field for the invitation i i think for you know for the mayors that are around
Speaker 2and you got the five diamonds prelude as well evaporate linebacker um welcome to the show i wonder if tyson donaldson aiken goes there instead of flemington on saturday um obviously has accepted okay there you go whether you know
Speaker 9i'm not sure whether he's accepted in melbourne as well but he has accepted in the five diamonds prelude so what what happens there all
Speaker 2right beautiful and um he was one of the great stories to come out of the turak he was so brave and defeat where he finished third so yeah another and then the golden eagle she's alibi will be heading there to ramwick to take on autumn boy zach purton back in town he'll take the ride there on chris waller's three-year-old cult so um yeah that'll come around pretty quickly the golden eagle i think
Speaker 9the silver eagle threw up some some opposition as well and apocalyptic back in form and skyhook was excellent bavark was was quite good within the law hit the line really well there so look it's shaping up to while we do have a a star headline act in uh she's alibi um you know she's got a few pretty smart ones to to beat and she's got to do it coming back from 2000 meters as we lighten power so uh that barrier draw is next tuesday evening uh for the golden eagle so we'll we'll see what unfolds then don't
Speaker 2worry mate she'll brain them she's alibi um she'll give them a galloping lesson can't wait to see what she can do there on saturday we like to see we
Speaker 9like to see good horses do their thing as we do with autumn glow um on saturday we like to see good horses do their thing as we do with autumn glow um on saturday she was just outstanding and you know we know chay will snow slouch at all and she had his measure up pretty comfortably yeah and you only had to look at the gap back to third
Speaker 2good on you ray thanks for that mate we'll catch up with you next week good luck gareth
Speaker 9cheers mate there's ray hickson
Speaker 2from racing new south wales we're going to take a break we'll find you some winners with bag of tips next with our preview of the geelong cup meeting

Speaker 10yeah it's it's calm which is a big win as opposed to uh last year um obviously rails back in the true we do have overcast right now which i'd love to see a little bit of sun come out and brighten the join up which it is forecast to do uh top temperature of 23 and it's just subtly blowing in and so the sun should pop out and hopefully sooner rather
Speaker 2than later all right then so is there any rain predicted there was a shower was in there in the
Speaker 10summer so there's no chance of rain but there's a 20 30 chance of rain so and that was similar yesterday as well which we got absolutely zero um look i reckon we'd be really stiff to get anything so i wouldn't bank on any rainfall at
Speaker 2all will we get an upgrade
Speaker 10i don't think so like i put out uh two and a half millimeters uh from 2 a.m to 4 a.m just before track work which which set it for 30 millimeters for the week and just with the way this morning's gone like it's very benign and and no sun as i said and i'm still got my gumboots on so i'm not going to be able to get on here outside the manning yard um still a bit of moisture on the leaf so look i think we're on a genuine genuine four today and it'll be there all day um
Speaker 2how do you think the track will play will wind conditions come into play here for geelong
Speaker 10cup day uh it is picking up the southerly sort of towards the end of the card so maybe geelong cup the southerly is blowing in up to about 20 kilometers an hour um sometimes people do say they hit the straight and it hits them in the face and it is hard to make ground um but look that that's hard to say i've seen northerlies also really be on pace uh sort of wind as well so look i think if if you're having a little bit of a bet geelong in the true position it's always beneficial to be in the first half for the field no doubt it's just the way the track plays with the layout the hill the tight turn so look that's that's how i'd be banking on it it did that probably a couple years ago before the classic winner came from last at about race five so look that that's just a safe bet to be on pace at geelong when we're in the
Speaker 2true good on you mate have you got any whispers for us jimmy what are
Speaker 10you hearing i like lindsey's he's got only one today uh i think it's mr natural with a good horse likes a bit of giving the ground and i don't mind o'brien's with steel for the cup okay
Speaker 2sticking with the locals i love it hey you enjoy yourself shane bennett just sent me a picture the oz equipment rentals sen track marquee's ready to go so bring it on we'll see you there this afternoon mate good
Speaker 10stuff g look forward to it there
Speaker 2we go there's james dalton it's on giddy up it's time for the hunter's edge with mark hunter this is unbelievable stuff we've got the great man on a wednesday hello to you mark hunter you morning gareth morning all how's things mate yes a round of applause um well i'm confident that you can tip the card today at geelong what do you make of this program
Speaker 11you're not bad you rang up and said can you get one special and it became the whole meeting you're going beautifully today you've done well um geelong cup day i've actually taken a parlay two three four five and that will do me for the day if i get it right i get it right if i get it wrong i don't do too much it's a pretty tough day look i heard jimmy talk about the track it can be hard to make around there on cup day just make things a little difficult through the day if it's like that
Speaker 2benny caluzzi hello to you hello mate how are you good thank you mate um always great fun geelong cup day you've got the three-year-old classic and then the geelong cup and it's the golden ticket into the melbourne cup this year have you got any futures plays that you need to win
Speaker 12no i don't i can't say i've ever been to a geelong cup day but you're right it is a it is a bit of a moving day and it shapes the uh the rest of the spring for sure do you think there's a chance that
Speaker 11we could
Speaker 2see a melbourne cup winner
Speaker 11today mark um gareth if point of law or small fry or even come out and win the geelong cup well they would race into calculations for the for a melbourne cup
Speaker 2let's have a look at the first race and we'll get to the geelong cup in just a moment here but um the first race is a benchmark 70 scratch the five sapphire siren and the nine no room as benny
Speaker 12caluzzi open race mr o'reilly our 3.40 favorite from not to look 4.20 for your own good has been the big firmer here into five dollars was much bigger earlier in the week in roaring engine 550
Speaker 11i'm going to tip number three not to look i think it's one of the better bits of the day it's a real patrick payne improving stayer we showed a bit more speed early speed at murray bridge was never going to lose it's far too good here there's not a lot of speed in the race i think mr o'reilly looks the leader i'm hoping that mickey d can send this horse forward park fourth or fifth and can win to beat number 12 roaring engine who's getting fitter we'll get back and just need some luck but stable do race well here to mr o'reilly a horse that's got around 2500 meters it's had a trial since that last run looks like getting a soft enough lead and give it every chance and four for your own good got a tricky gate won an awful race last time this is harder but it's on the improved so i quite like number three here not to look so it's 12 2 and 4 3 12 2 and 4 to kick off the race we're going to have a look at the next race we're going to have a look at the next race we're going to have a look at the next race we're going to have a look at the next race we're going to have a look at the next race we're going to have a look at the next race
Speaker 2three twelve two and four to kick off proceedings on your lock cup geelong cup day we go to race number two the benchmark 66 over the 1100 scratch the two yes yoshi the four purple streak the 11th tennessee spirit and then you can throw out the 14 kippus and the emergency the 16 here ben royal rendezvous three dollars
Speaker 1280 in favorite where does he get to from that wide draw from 10 warriors six dollars 50 immortal triumph seven dollars 50 has been a good go and spirit of wealth eight dollars
Speaker 11No idea I'll give you four numbers here No real order 9, 10, 13 and 18 Number 9, My Zephyr It's another stable that raced well down here at Geelong So you've always got to watch their horses I thought it ran well First up will be fitter We'll certainly need some luck from the draw 10, 10 Warriors Look, it's a good horse I thought its troll might have been better But give it a chance on what we've seen on race day 13 Vane Champagne Big watch here A little while between runs The stable loved this Geelong Cup day Pulling off a plunge An 18 Royal Rendezvous It's pretty hard to believe it hasn't won a race since that debut effort It's getting closer to a win But as Benny said It's going to need a lot to go right from the barrier So very tough race 9, 10, 13 and 18
Speaker 2Race number 3 It's over the 1300 metres Benchmark 70 Aliro, Charming Nick and Attachments And many of the experts Telling me that this former Kiwi mare Auro Bell is the best of the day here Benny
Speaker 12There you go And she is the best back runner of the day as well $1.70 looking to remain unbeaten Aurora Bell from Misty Whisper $4.80 Quite a talent in her own right Yum is $7 And Lario is nines Look, it looks
Speaker 11the winner Gareth I'm not sold on the hype just yet It's two wins in New Zealand on soft ground They were okay without raving Come to Ballarat Totally controlled a weak race Got clear Was entitled to win And did The thing here is There looks to be Just looks to be no pressure up there Up front So it should just bounce Put itself in front It should control the race It clearly looks the one to beat From number 2 Lario Who will just be poking along on the fence Running on strongly first up 11 Misty Whisper Got a long way back last time Hopefully can settle closer And 10 Yum Who got going through the line last time Might need further But will be running on So it should win Aurora Bell 7-2
Speaker 211-10 What about for the Tasmanians That are listening this morning With Silver Dagger Their 5 year old mare
Speaker 11Yeah Troy Trolled really well Silver Dagger trolled really well And it's drawn a gate Where I would think it parks Second or third So it would be I wouldn't talk you out Of a place ticket on Silver Dagger I don't know if I could beat the favourite But I wouldn't talk you out Of a place ticket
Speaker 2Race number 4 You've got It's over the 1400 metres Benchmark 66 Scratch the 2 6 7 Karen doesn't take her place The 16 and 17 In race number 4 What do you make of this race now Here from a market perspective With no Karen Benicoluzzi
Speaker 12Yeah it looks another tough one $4.20 in favour of his brass In pocket from Olay Royale $6.50 Mr Natural $7 has been a good go All week In power in the Beaties 8s
Speaker 11I think Karen's off to Cranbourne Friday Gareth you can back it there I'll tip number 3 Olay Royale I think it's not a bad little horse This horse It was a good win Good ride And the inside was the spot To be at Ballarat Before a spell But won well Came back Again had the beautiful trail Just behind them at Ballarat But got the job done nicely Just draws for the perfect run It'll be fitter It's better suited 1400 metres And I think it's the one to beat 14 Mr Natural Big win last time The Stables horses Absolutely fly down at Geelong So look for it to be charging again They're the two I'm thinking Will dominate the race 12 brass in pocket Nice horse Solid trial Got a chance And maybe number 8 power In the Beat Who gets back onto dry ground Which will suit that horse Fitter for that first up run 3 from 14 for me 3, 14, 12 and 8 Did someone else
Speaker 2Did someone bet $20 Mr Natural?
Speaker 12Yes It wasn't us No But it still has been back with us
Speaker 2Yeah Into $7 now You want to You want to see them running on Running on don't you With Mr Natural Mark It's going to get a long way back Isn't it? Yeah that's what they thought
Speaker 11Last time Gareth I think every leader had won that day Until Mr Natural stepped out And he Rounded them up from the back So yes It would certainly be advantageous For its chances If you can make ground
Speaker 2But this is a tougher race Than last time isn't it?
Speaker 11Yeah it is It won a poor race Like on form On form you would think This is a big class rise But Lindsay's horses at Geelong They just fly So I'm certainly not saying You can't win
Speaker 2Like if you went back And played Rezzy's Back in the day For Benny's team At Caroline Springs You'd get 72 touches Mark
Speaker 11What are the reserves Gareth? Was there a game before?
Speaker 2Yeah that's a good point you make I just walked into that one Didn't I? The 3 year old Geelong Classic Um Who are the scratchings here? It's clear isn't it? Clear Yeah Clear the scratchings
Speaker 12Which is no deductions
Speaker 2And Chris Waller and Yulong Have the favourite here
Speaker 12And a really well backed favourite True Tone True Tone $2.90 Bringing down some New South Wales form From Moshidi Is $4.20 ICU $6.50 And on Shalada Gareth $8 Really keen to see How this horse finishes up
Speaker 11It's favourite for the derby I think on Shalada Off that win at Warner Well look I think True Tone will win It's coming down It's jumping from 16 to 22 But you don't doubt the stable It beat Tharwa Who was almost the run of the race On Saturday at Caulfield It just gets the perfect run For Damien Lane He can just put the sleep Behind the speed There's not a lot of speed You get a beautiful run behind them And I think True Tone will win To beat number 6 on Shalada It's a really promising Patrick Payne stayer It's got absolutely no gate speed It'll flop out It'll be last So it faces a big task to win But you can't do much more Than what it did last time 2 ICU Getting back onto a better track It's got good form for the race I'm just worried about the barrier If they punch it forward And 11 Crimson Ore Coming down from Sydney Just looks like it will relish the distance If it's far from the worst of big odds I think number 1 wins 1-6-2-11 Who leads here Mark? Well Gareth That's a good question There's not much speed I see you Well Maness Cold Shower Murshidi Melbourne Boy I would think the leader Would come from that 4 But once they find their spot I wouldn't think they'll be going hard
Speaker 2So that's a look at the first 5 races We're going to take a break And have a look at the quaddi legs On Geelong Cup Day Next with Mark Hunter And Benny Caluzzi
Speaker 1join the conversation text us on 0 4 double 9 7 3 6 7 3 6 live across australia this is giddy up
Speaker 2with gareth hall welcome to giddy up gareth hall mark hunter and benny caluzzi mark what about that punter we bet 3 6 5 the other day after you left me there on the hundreds edge for the friday preview of caulfield cup day zach tumbridge was explaining how this is one punter that from a hundred dollar bet was going for 700 odd thousand i think wasn't it betty yep and he cashed out before he cashed out 300 000 and they asked him what would you do if you had carring rising running i said there's no chance that i'd be i'd be cashing out off a hundred dollar bet you'd let it ride but you'd feel sick now wouldn't you well
Speaker 11i wouldn't think you'd feel ecstatic
Speaker 2oh have you ever had that um you've probably been in um that position before not for 700 i wouldn't imagine mark but um no i had a
Speaker 11quaddie going at stall and uh i had seven out of nine going and i was paying big and i was on a sunday and i was a little under the weather on the sunday and i wasn't really paying attention so the two i didn't have was 33 to 166 to one so i had good bets on them to save the 33 to one chance one so it wasn't a dreadful result but then the dividend come through they paid on three legs in the second so i got the quaddie as well so that was uh because i hadn't paid attention well because they didn't pay no one had to win her oh okay back in the day of no jackpots they paid on three legs in the second so geez when that happened oh that's going back 20 20 years 25 years that's uh because of my stupidity i'm not paying attention i did save but i got both bits
Speaker 12you're blessed so the latest was he cashed out
Speaker 2was it yeah he cashed no he didn't cash out he let
Speaker 12it roll he let it roll yeah he
Speaker 2let it roll
Speaker 12he probably had a bet on tempting thinking he was going to get
Speaker 216s in cop days yeah well yeah but that's because it's the toe they must be late or something i know you've been on to that benny but that's a debate for another day um what did you make of um what'd you make of the caulfield cup in the everest mark well as
Speaker 11you know gareth we were at the everest it was a sensational day absolutely sensational it was uh we were lucky enough to be sport by hospitality so i'm not sure how to go in the gym queuing up for drinks and whatnot but um it was a magnificent day they opened the doors you know so you get the noise of the crowd on the outside that was the first time i've been there and i'll be going back for sure caulfield cup funny run race funny run race not really a real staying test so not the usual guide to the melbourne cup i don't think
Speaker 2yeah cox play we had the barry draw there yesterday um i loved it like land legend barry 12 big tick i reckon you would i don't know i don't know i don't know if you've ever seen a barry draw i would have picked barry 12 with him would
Speaker 11you it's a great idea like last year they whoever whoever picked early and drew inside via sistina made a dreadful mistake because they would then have to kick up when via sistina made the rush down the side yes they were they thought they were choosing well last year drawing low gates and they couldn't have chosen any worse uh this year that's it's two two magnificent picks for the kirimar horses 11 and 12 they couldn't be better suited where they are from the barriers
Speaker 2um who's the worst drawn horse in the cox
Speaker 11plate blind rays and aliana
Speaker 2yeah even if aliana went barry 9 instead of barry 10 did that surprise you that is i can't
Speaker 11explain that that's extraordinary
Speaker 2mcdonald's that good he goes i want you to give me an extra challenge there on saturday and it doesn't
Speaker 11make sense at all whoever did that
Speaker 2um who's the best drawn then
Speaker 11oh all the ones in chow wolf all those horses that are drawn in uh we'll go over and draw two great draw chow wolf drawn three is a great draw you know i haven't got him in front of me but attrition drawing low gives it the chance to get where it wants to get to so delius is well drawn the two the two losers are blind rays and aliana the rest of all drawn okay what's the market now
Speaker 2we've bet 365 ben i think
Speaker 12it's uh four dollars fifty a piece for both aliana so she didn't drift
Speaker 2after the draw no she
Speaker 12didn't but what i will say is it's still sort of futures market when it goes from the tuesday we'll get a proper market today once all the final fields come out were you birdman chose one instead
Speaker 11of five um not really i think one's okay benny mallum's just got to decide how close he rides birdman i think war woven will cross him straight away you've got to ride birdman relatively quietly as we've seen in the past but you're not jumping and dragging back to ninth or tenth on the fence and he's got to decide war woven will probably cross him straight away but then he's got to decide all those other ones attrition and chow wolf and all those horses drawn those i haven't got him in front of me but those horses there he wouldn't want to be letting all them cross him so he's got to decide how much work he makes makes use of a birdman early i don't think
Speaker 12there should be too many hard stories anyway no with the tempo
Speaker 2well you know how to ride birdman you reckon you've got the key to that horse there mark
Speaker 11well i think you rode him too close to the australian cup gareth that showed up it went up to queensland j mac going and rode him absolutely perfectly having that last strike at them so benny's just got to decide where that spot is on on saturday in the run yeah
Speaker 2he's got to drop out and let him finish off but it'd be interesting to see well he did win a we'll talk about this on friday but a strong run doom and cup but he has he hasn't performed at his best in melbourne when it's been a truly run race but yeah it's so much intrigue i think it's a bloody great race this year the cox player it's one from a putting perspective trying to work it all out you're guaranteed a strong pace so the best horse is most likely going to win it's going to be some fun watching it this time around anyway we've got to get there race six um is a benchmark 70 just having a look at the scratchings here for the first leg of the over the 1700 meters you can scratch the 12 13 and 15 here benny stung
Speaker 12easy our four dollar 60 favorite from calius five dollars of those uh high up in the market it's it's your firm up stay humble five dollars fifty and a diva seven dollars yeah really
Speaker 11tough race i'm going to tip number eight calias it just has to repeat the performance it put in on its home track last time it sat midfield come to the outside just swept past them for a big win now it's only had the two runs back it should be fitter it draws to need some luck and again you're hoping you've got a track where you can make some ground to beat number four stay humble who will punch forward probably lead the race and be hard to run down 11 revolver getting fitter was just okay first up a little roughy here number 14 so long ago not a bad horse this horse got barrier two had no luck first up it's massive if it can poke through it's got a place chance stun the favorite look put it in if you want it didn't do much first up didn't have the clearest passage it's fitter it's got barrier one it'll get a beautiful run it does need to improve off that first up run so i'll go eight four uh eight four eleven and fourteen
Speaker 2eight four eleven and fourteen in race number six we go to race seven which is the geelong cup over the 2400 meters a few scratching because the fuel going to mooney valley or the mooney valley cup at flemington on saturday so torresino is out the seven valiant king comes out the nine no man's all blue the kiwi the 12. jennifer moose the 14 is out and the tazzy horse asfa also comes out here yeah it looks a solid
Speaker 12addition in the euphrates is getting out a little bit in this market for the 3.80 which means you get 450 with the bet boost small fry we've just taken some really good bets for this horse in the last half an hour it's into 4.80 second favorite wow point of law is five dollars let's steal six dollars and sulkum the old boy 21 into 11.
Speaker 11i'm going to tip 8 10 11 gareth so i think number eight point of law the two imported horses i don't know what they do from the barrier they've drawn terribly and they both need luck but point of war this is a really nice horse the run in the queen's vase was a beauty two starts ago got sped out the back ran on well for fourth set up on the pace last time wasn't really suited by the tempo or whatever but was still far too good it's gone forward and it's gone back overseas it draws wide it looks like a few especially if it's leaders by race seven there's a few that will be looking for a spot up the front so it's certainly not clear-cut what ethan brown does and it's certainly not clear-cut that it will get every chance in the run from that barrier but i think it's a good horse point of law uh 10 small fry this is another one that's gone forward overseas it's gone back it's settled midfield in the 4 000 meter race but it's gone forward over shorter draws wide you can win for sure if it just has any luck early 11 let's deal interesting they've taken the crossover off with steel i don't know if that means they're going to let it run or not it's got barrier one you think it would get every chance on the back of the euphrates and and go awfully close so there's a three eight ten eleven next best number two the euphrates look it might win i thought it was pretty soft laid up there in sydney it's had three runs back off a long long spell probably getting onto a firmish track by now i think it's under the odds for mine i'll go 8 10 11
Speaker 2and 2. 8 10 11 and 2. i think it's great that you got the geelong cup as a golden ticket into this race mark but it is a handicap um so maybe you don't get the best horse going to the melbourne cup
Speaker 11well there's not many probably coming out of it that can go on to win a melbourne cup so i don't think you'll you know point of law or small fry or with deal you've still got a competitive horse down in the weight in the couch so now
Speaker 2i think it adds to the things so point of law um are you surprised there is this the best lead that you can get that they're going to start from gate 18 around geelong instead of gate 6 at flemington
Speaker 11yeah that's sort of surprised me a little bit um because i'm not sure how it races gareth i'm not sure the racing pattern it's just shown both different methods overseas so they would probably look at this race and i don't think they could come up with a clear scenario of the best way to go about winning the race but i think it's a pretty good horse point of law i would have been happy to have something on it in the caulfield cup if it got to start there and it's going to be very hard to beat here but you don't want that much to go wrong in a race like the geelong cup from the you know over this distance from that
Speaker 2barrier bred by king charles point of law um so yeah it'd be interesting to see what ethan does do from that gate let's have a look at race number eight over the 1200 meters benchmark only four scratch the 10 11 and 12 here benny kluze yeah not
Speaker 12yet again another open race ever rain our four dollar favorite from celsius star five dollars lardy char five dollars fifty this horse opened ten dollars on monday i've only had uh six cents of deductions and keep you cool he's six dollars but we've got six horses under six dollars fifty in this market i want to keep
Speaker 11you cool i thought it was not given much hope at all first up at mornington back in amongst them not the clearest passage i think it's fitter it draws outside and there's some speed under it but i'm hoping for a positive ride by james johnson punch forward get outside the leader control the race and i think keep you cool will be very hard to beat eight ever rain delane trailed this twice and he had jumped off to ride just the journey so i don't know if that's a great sign but i thought it trailed well now it draws three it'll end up midfield inside it'll just need some luck to get clear at the right time and be running on five immortal star resuming gate one take sit leaders back at every chance and one celsius star who was good first up sort of young apprentice big day down there at geelong just needs everything to go right in the run but i think if three has a bit of luck early can run very well three eight
Speaker 2five on one and race nine benchmark 78 you can scratch the six seven eight nine 13 and 14 as these horses um get set this is a heat of the mcc series eight which is the final coming to you at um flemington on oaks day um and it's over the 1500 meters here benny it is and bella
Speaker 12verona is looking for three straight victories here three dollars 50 in favor from sulek three dollars 80 it's been the big big go in this race into second favorite somewhere is five dollars and mr verse also five
Speaker 11dollars uh look it's an even race i'll go three ten twelve is the main one number three somewhere who i've been sticking up for all the time it just has interrupted campaigns has time between runs little setbacks i thought i had every chance last time it's been a while between runs had a trial since it's an absolutely perfect race for somewhere but it does need a win ten bella verona she looked terrific last campaign now she's come back with two wins but you wouldn't say either of them was really impressive she draws wide she needs luck she's got a chance 12 sulek sulek's an interesting one it ran well first up it struggled at 1600 before so it's got a chance to win it's got a chance to win it's got a chance to win it's got to prove it can run 1500 and it's trying to do it second up that's the little query with sulek but it goes in and fourth pick maybe number 11 untapped after a few other scratchings i'm left with it for fourth so three ten twelve and eleven all right then
Speaker 2so let's look at the geelong cup meeting this afternoon what about your best bets mark best
Speaker 11bet is aurora bell gareth it just sets up beautifully for race three number seven aurora bell is the best and i thought
Speaker 2it would be a good match for the race three number seven race one number
Speaker 11three what about your quad first leg go wider if you want here four eight eleven and fourteen second leg eight ten eleven third leg one three five and eight and come home with three
Speaker 2ten and twelve three ten and twelve have you had any bets for the
Speaker 11melbourne cup of recent times no i don't think i have no i haven't got involved yet yeah i'm gonna bet i won't no i won't see the odds i'll have a bit shortly all
Speaker 2right four eight eleven fourteen eight ten eleven one three five and eight third leg and then three ten and twelve a lot of feedback coming through genius choice of barry tenfelliana can follow the two marhorses over and end up behind war woven and blind raise into fifth all over from there there you go um maybe that that's what mcdonald will do i don't know if he can do that to tell
Speaker 11you the truth he'd have to he'd have to erase a few horses out of the race
Speaker 2field to do that i think yes um thanks for that mark thank you there's mark hunter there we're going to take a break mcgannon to join us next join the conversation text us on 0 4 9 7 3 6 7
Speaker 13 6 live across australia this is giddy up with gareth hall welcome
Speaker 2back to giddy up it's 10 40 benny kaluzzi now mickey gatton joins us to preview this warwick farm meeting hello to you
Speaker 13mick good boys uh good for their warwick farm rails at three meters i suspect sort of on paces to some advantage today g but uh tricky enough card but we'll find a winner
Speaker 2seven races first race a maiden over the 1300 meters scratched the four and the five here benny kaluzzi yep and we've
Speaker 12got a two dollar sixty favorite here he's been really well done backed all over harry from social graces three dollars twenty explosive express five dollars and zahav is six dollars but there have been quite a few deductions in this race
Speaker 13yeah pretty low race to kick off i think the favorite has come out so three eight one nine or the favorite this morning at seven o'clock anyway all over harry was pretty good they're running second newcastle 1300 meters on speed states that out of meters has a fitness edge over many of the rivals here i don't think many of these have a great future though three eight one
Speaker 2and nine all right then so three eight one and nine that's race one race number two and we've got a few scriling the one scratching here our emperor comes out of this benchmark 68 good little race here benny kaluzzi yeah just
Speaker 12the one scratching but but it was a big one 23 cents came out rumba our three dollar forty favorite from donatello four dollars good go there dignifying four dollars eighty is reggie bayless's only ride for the day and devil wings five dollars
Speaker 13six dollars six one four and five best bet of the day ramada these horse might have a bit of ability to manage to find j mac here which is a rare occurrence for uh for fred chrissy lee so they've had 13 rides the last 12 months 46.2 g sorry sorry i was just
Speaker 2talking to louis asking for something so don't worry so you're right what
Speaker 13do you just after a bit of a coffee or a bacon egg no no no no there's
Speaker 2something just um i need it done in this studio otherwise it's going to kill me so anyway i apologize that's okay
Speaker 13i'll keep going uh there they strike at 46 percent uh for 12 months so a huge profit on turnover those two and they get together and obviously they combine at the right time ramada looks a horse on the art was pretty good there around week sat some six lengths off them at the 800 meters made good ground to finish within two lengths uh kieran to james i think that's a decent form line in that race the winner goes all right and i think this horse should be far too good for them uh the one there donatello has ability natural will i goes to a lower draw suited comes off a good run there um winning in a 64 illawarra grains a lot of illawarra grains form stacked up so that's interesting that tracks are playing pretty fair six one four five best of
Speaker 2the day the six all right then um ramada for chris lees and james mcdonald's six one four and five what i was also trying to get louis attention is that um mark hunter said he was going to have a parlay two and three each along and we've got a heap of text messages coming through he only gave us two horses so um mark if you're going to mention something at the start make sure i should have followed up anyway so we'll get that sent through race three benchmark 72 over the 2130 meters backhanders are scratching and the 12 botanical boy comes out bloodham girl just
Speaker 1252 and a half kilos after this claim is yeah three dollar 40 favorite from zonk star four dollars hallowed halls four dollars 80 and lagana has uh been well back this morning eight into six dollars
Speaker 13yeah i can understand the the money for lagana in this race i'm just sort of going from an angle of not much ability here i think bloodham girl probably has a little bit more upside at least more scope for improvement and continue to improve from sort of 12 14 16 now 18 and then 2130 meters here this afternoon so she might have a bit more scope for improvement with that 52 and a half kilos she gets in really well sienna's writing in great form and just going to lean that way happy to throw um the three zonk star there for uh maddie smith tommy berry takes a ride gets a jockey upgrade wasn't too bad canberra it's a fair upgrade um step up in class i should say from canberra to work farm but obviously has some ability to this horse i'm sure zach lloyd was riding his horse yesterday but uh anyway tommy berry is aboard and sort of that'll give us eight three two and four the numbers so eight
Speaker 2three two and four for mickey gunn gun and after the third race let's have a look at the fourth race straight after this break here on giddy up because that will kick off the quaddie so we'll go through the quaddie there at warwick farm next year on giddy up
Speaker 1join the conversation text us on 0 4 double 9 736 736 live across australia this is giddy up with gareth hall welcome
Speaker 2back to giddy up we're previewing warwick farm the fourth race over the thousand benchmark 72 346 of the scratchings here we've got benny caluzzi and mickey gannon with me benny your turn race number
Speaker 12four we've got equal favorites here horseshoe hill and bruce i am three dollars forty a piece from confidentiality four dollars valerie six dollars in from seven dollars fifty earlier today and she's my x eleven dollars
Speaker 13well numbers here race four eight ten seven and eleven i really like horseshoe hill i think she's a horse with plenty of ability and we saw her in group races uh last separation and beaten by pattern and race shape sort of against on quite a few times she's got a fair amount of ability she gets an opportunity to show that sure a thousand meters might be a little short trials have been good jason collins been aboard on the trials draws well in barrier three in a race where i think it's a fair bit of pressure from out wide so we might be holding our breath late but i think she will be the best closer in the race for 10 confidentiality national willow for joe pride trials have been okay you do see a margin of 10 lengths but swordplay and pembury were often gone on that trial so ignore the margins trial was pretty good for her confidentiality 8 10 7 and 11 you in the quality we'll take we will just take the 8 and the 10 8
Speaker 210 8 10 7 11 with the sen track oz equipment rentals marquee today shane bennett's listening he's um in the marquee by himself right now and he usually gives everyone like he gives us a punters club he shouts the punters club we haven't had great success over the last couple of years i'm just trying to weigh up the best type
Speaker 13of play here like do you tell shane to keep his phone on i'll shoot him a couple messages that's what they all say
Speaker 2they all say everyone wants to be the hero put their hand up but i reckon we we we have one bet don't you reckon mickey gannon just have one
Speaker 13bet well how's it worked in the previous years we gotta learn well we've had
Speaker 2multis we're going to the dogs the trots the gallops we haven't really missed out on any races so you gotta have a group quality don't you but he's but he's got tags there he's got sam highland he's got mickey gannon he's got cam luke there'll be a few others that'll be walking into that marquee to give him advice yeah um
Speaker 13yeah well i think i think benny's on so you want a group quality that keeps everyone engaged to the end of the day yes uh so go wide and come home uh narrow that's what we're going to do there um so we'll do that we'll um we'll have the best bet i can the probably easiest way for these to get around engaged here you go shane just text me you said don't let gareth have a bet so there you go um that's legitimate i'll send that across g just in case you think i'm making that up
Speaker 2i'm not even going to be bothered turning up then you're going to be unbelievable he said he needs
Speaker 13the captain david taggart to lift as well so there's a bit going on yeah i think like a place multi who keeps everyone engaged across the day as well so you can you can do those yeah or you can just lose everything on the greyhounds because that's a really good move yeah
Speaker 2yeah yeah race number five we're up to it's over the 1400 meters scratch the five and the six what are you doing here take it away benny yeah
Speaker 12maybe just put it all on the cornella here because they're only back in two horses probability theory a dollar 80 has been smashed and the same might have a good one and america three dollars 20 is quite a talent as well on its day it's 12 and longer for the rest
Speaker 13what we might be doing is is uh backing the favorite and saving the second favorite which you hear a lot of that going around but they're no special i'll be uh i'll be with probability theory on top short enough though nine seven three four i don't think it's not between the two barriers going to be played part as will speed maps so both these horses have ability benny spot on they should run one two albeit you know you could also see a scenario where america is out the back and rushes home into third so how many probability theory i think gets the job done and the nine clearly on top from the seven nine seven three
Speaker 2four nine seven three and four and race five those two in the quad ig nine and seven in the quad all right nine and seven so we've got eight ten in the quad and then nine and seven then we move to race six benchmark seventy two scratch the nine fourteen seventeen and
Speaker 12eighteen super fabulistic is our three dollar fifty favor and just rocks steady at that mark from storm season five dollars standard deviation five dollars fifty and we're seeing a bit of a for great idea eight dollars fifty into seven dollars today yeah
Speaker 13if i had drawn a gate great idea i think it'd be a great bet but that's awkward for a really awkward start point to the mile at warwick farm so i received really high pressure race my starting point in the race was high pressure who's going to handle that and maybe looking some horses they're coming back in a bit or or looking for further and i've fallen on standard deviation a horse for j mac and walla's gone 1900 meters had two goes there 800 meters now comes back to a high pressure 1600 meter race and i think that'll probably play in its favor so from a price perspective you're getting what around six bucks has been mentioned it's the right price to find out you get a really good setup 11 15 4 and 5 to 15 aura you have plenty of that jl don't you worry no shortage another horse it goes 18 back miles so that's the way we're sort of playing yes we need this the pressure on is super fabulistic doritos storm season great idea even zen master there for olivia chambers uh pushing forward i think we'll see a high pressure mile and i think the 11 15 4 and 5 can all be in the finish for the quaddie we will take all
Speaker 2four of them so 11 15 4 and 5 race 6 and all four of those numbers as mickey pointed out does they all go into the quaddie race number 7 benchmark 72 scratch the 9 11 13 14 15 and we're going to see a high pressure mile so that's the way we're sort of playing 15 16 18 19 20 and 21 this is over the 1300 here ben beneath the rock
Speaker 12yeah 3.60 favorite here well enough back from you're not the king 4.20 i'm not sure if they've forgot the apostrophe on that name or not nitro 4.80 in from seven and street artists this is mark's horse i believe it's uh it's not well liked in the early betting five out to seven
Speaker 2because it's four five two seven three four three that's why i never win street artist anyway you're a young man
Speaker 13benny a bit of a road scholar there mate it's good to see um not just a pretty not just a pretty face at two five nine and what do i have there the one is one of those horses have come out this morning have i missed one of the nine has come out hasn't it so we'll have to go two five one and we'll chuck in the four albeit it doesn't like winning um nitro i think is the best horse in the race so 1300 meters at a high pressure big field early on was a bit of a career but now a pressure's come out of the race and i really like his work at the trials he's good horse he's proven first up to you know he's obviously run uh first and placed but also proven to put up good figures so i like that this is his race to win i think he's got more ability than a benchmark 72 on a wednesday two five one and four the numbers we fell on as far as quarters go for that it'll just be the two five and the one sorry
Speaker 2mark say two five and one what about your best bets at warren
Speaker 13farm just the one best bet g uh race two number six rumba dar i think we'll get the job done getting a good price and it'll start clear favorite um by 250 i've got a couple for you at geelong as well obviously your boys heading down there for a big day if you don't mind tell me what it was mark's thoughts race one number two mr o'reilly any push there no
Speaker 2he did haven't have it in his top four oh
Speaker 13it'll win uh race six number five stung any opinion on
Speaker 2her so race one number two and race six he's got the five he potted the five as well staying he said well you can have it in your quality but he hasn't got it in his top four either
Speaker 13unbelievable well if he manages to get me done twice i'll buy him dinner yeah
Speaker 2so race one number two and race six number five the great game tell you what
Speaker 12there might be three thousand combinations in these uh group quarters yeah
Speaker 2a hundred percent that's why you need to have one person taking the reins and to analyze all that's why g halls goes to the grave yeah that's why i can i'm i can take in all of the expert tips that i'm getting shane and analyze them we'll see like if shane gave me 500 today and i'll report but i'll turn it into 3 000
Speaker 13gee i reckon if shane gave you 500 it'd be gone in the second greyhound race anyway you're a bit
Speaker 2all right then mickey you're being smart now can i hang up on him see you later mickey have a great never in your life good on you boys see ya there's mickey gannon good
Speaker 12on you betty boy what's um are you going to along today no definitely not gee but um i do see that the fields have just dropped for saturday at uh what do you make of the ramwick uh there's a few good races i think lindemann versus tom kittens a nice little clash in the craven plate yes spring champion diamond of barrier six cormier barrier eight snorley marco seven global goal three and proxima dia is nine of nine okay
Speaker 2did they accept with central
Speaker 12europe no they
Speaker 2have not no um and what about
Speaker 12invitation yes invitation lazura's drawn 12 of 14 there's uh two emergencies in the race idle flyer eight super smink the the widest draw 14 firestorm 11 two lorries 13 jeringong was awesome the other day yeah barrier seven all right
Speaker 2then benny we'll have the weekend preview of things to maccas on friday and we got the top four multi as well we did it paid over nine dollars yeah yeah you beauty so that was poor old brayden he doesn't get his bonus so um i don't know i don't know i don't know i reckon i know that people sometimes can be critical but we'd be way in front with the weekend preview top four the
Speaker 12top four multi is well in front yeah well in front the people who complain about it not winning don't take it every week no which you need
Speaker 2you've got to be consistent and you do take it every week so you can give us a balance sheet on friday that'd be much appreciated good on you benny see you mate there's benny kaluzi we'll take a break we'll continue on tips next we'll go to new zealand we'll go to queensland we'll go to south australia and we'll go to wa as well um and It's 10.58. Speaker 2our best bets around the country in fact australasia here with bag of tips check out racing queensland.com.au for where queensland is racing today chris nelson joins us g'day chriso good morning gareth how you going good thank you mate take it away with your best change is going to give me the control of the pundits club after i um i said that i'll um turn the money into a profit today backing myself in front of everyone so i'll be calling on you chris oh well we've got
Speaker 14a heavy track and you know my thoughts on heavy tracks gareth and i'm not they're not my favorite and look we we will be getting some more rain this afternoon and a deluge tomorrow apparently so we're looking forward to that anyway uh race five as i said yesterday i want to back a couple here number five ready for the trip who was just a huge run uh last start behind japanese they meet again here just that wide no cover the entire trip was entitled to just fade in the straight but uh he kept going and he was only beaten three quarters of a length on the line that was an exceptional effort from ready for the trip now he's had to go on heavy for an effort but he has won and placed numerous times on soft ground so we'll give him a chance number five ready for the trip and savour number 14 in the race also for chris waller look she's just caught my eye her last couple she's been quite strong to the line she draws a gate here which means she could settle closer um she hasn't won on soft and she hasn't seen heavy but she's placed twice on soft so maybe something small just as a saver they're also a number 14 savour uh the other one race seven horse number 15 don't doubt missy well she's been racing very consistently pretty much all prep uh now her last start effort was at the uh at doom and she ran third there behind ready for amy i thought that was quite quite a good one she got back as she does but she ran on quite well now she hasn't seen heavy but she's placed both soft track runs and she gets down a little in the weights here her form has been pretty good i like that run too back at the sunny coast that was good from the back of the field so we'll have something also number 15 don't doubt missy but i am a little bit wary gareth i don't like wet tracks and when the rain's going to come during the meeting or possibly during the meeting it just doesn't help so we'll go with those cross our fingers and see what eventuates today and tomorrow you'll
Speaker 2probably tip the car now chris oh thanks

Speaker 18here comes roger and is going to give them a good rogering first up and roger is going to make it three for three game set match
Speaker 2roger oh roger's become the people's champ because of d mccall and he joins us now for the best from the west hello to you darren
Speaker 19good morning gareth uh someone sent me a baseball cap yesterday and it had emblazoned just the word roger um above it make roger and then it had ing and lowercase font great again yes yes why not and it's
Speaker 18going to give them a good rogering first up so we're gonna that is
Speaker 2we're gonna we're selling merchandise so we're gonna call it um we're gonna sell those hats um give it a good roger
Speaker 19you better speak to eden young first part owner of roger i think he's already onto that oh
Speaker 2there you go there you go copyright
Speaker 19he's inundated he's inundated at the moment i think the name itself lends itself to so much creativity and yeah you know a little license and i think people are starting to see the fun side of it you know i think he was asked yesterday is your horse named after roger federer
Speaker 2well we hope so after you said game set match
Speaker 19well it might be roger but it could be anybody else it could be roger daltrey it could be you don't remember roger daltrey from the who uh but it could be roger moore from 007 we don't know who this roger is but you know what people are talking about this good looking horse who could win a
Speaker 2guineas yeah if it will open up the the um the the lines or we can't open up the lines but text in on the garrett's horse and hand text text line um who should this roger horse be named after which roger let us know oh four double nine seven three six seven three six roger roger federer i like the way you were thinking there with roger federer um dan morton's loving it um you've just this is this is going to go right off here roger's gonna roger's gonna be the most popular horse in wa but um he's got the ability to back it up darren that was a hot pace and he just had that turn of foot off a hot pace which is what you want and hopefully the owners don't sell him to hong kong keep him in australia
Speaker 19they they oh well you know i can't speak on all the behalf of the owners but uh you know maybe one of the major players is quite wealthy he doesn't need that much but uh look you know what he's here for the guineas he'll go to the guineas i i was very strong in roger's corner the other day um not just for the fact that we're having some fun with him and his name and the fact that he's also developing a bit of a cult following yes and now not only here but everywhere everyone seems to be following the source roger but he's got bling he's got a blaze he's got white socks he's a beautiful chestnut and he's three for three and what he did on the weekend that again i think showed his versatility i made a comment saturday morning that this horse you watch him he'll just drop his back as good horses do they'll just drop it down and find that extra gear and you know that they've still got gears i don't think dan's got anywhere near to the bottom of him at this stage and this is just a statement without knowing fact yeah but when you look at a horse he's make the shape of the horse he's got mile written all over him and i think that he's progressing in the right way so he's a complete package and at the moment he's doing everything that dan's asking of him and um i can't wait to see him line up in a in a wa guineas there on on group one railway day i know we're
Speaker 2getting ahead of ourselves but it'd be interesting to see how many three rods will go to a northerly pride of jenny is there whether they would like yeah that'll be that'll be interesting um
Speaker 19that's good that that sets it up i think it's a wonderful attraction for perth racing i i did mention the other day i don't think uh that we'll we'll have a horse here since we haven't had a horse here since vo rogue that could do what pride of jenny will potentially do that was way back in the 80s cyril small came over of course with vicky rail and and and voro just absolutely set the ascot track on fire there to win the race that is now now is the northerly it's had a few name changes as you're aware of but i think it's a wonderful attraction for perth racing i think that sets it up i think it's a wonderful attraction for perth racing i did mention the other day i don't think that we'll we'll have a horse here since we haven't had a horse here since vo rogue that could do what is as you're well aware so we haven't had one like him except for her now coming in this is a big bonus i think it'd be good to see the noms were very good as we probably have been touching upon over the last week or so the noms are very good all the strong stables represented now whether you know some get here more than some get here i'm not quite sure but it sets it up for a great carnival once the spring is over there in melbourne and they finish up in sydney
Speaker 2um we've got a we've got a we've got a punnett's club there on geelong cup day with shane bennett from oz equipment rentals and he's he's giving me control um cob so we wish him the best of luck there with his big um so i said well while we're on air they're all listening at the moment as they walk in to the marquee we've back paparazzi here um at three dollars thirty there we've bet three six five so give it strength they're about to move into the gates for the second um so he was great roger who is the best if i asked you right now who is the best horse in wa who would it be
Speaker 19well i think that there's a few that we can pick from i think already i think that king of light could potentially be the next best yeah what he delivered first up there on the weekend in the eurythmic dan morton's got such a strong stable of horses they're gearing up for all of the big ones but he's only ever had the one defeat and that was of course in the northerly his first crack as a three-year-old and he got knocked around and uh you know he probably had had enough but the the bruising nature of group one racing told he's a stronger horse what he did on the weekend i thought was outstanding you've got hot and high dion luciani's mayor who's the same she's seven out of eight there and uh you know her only defeat was by a breath she is such a good mare and she'll keep finding and finding the the hotter the heat in the kitchen the better she'll go i think and um when they when they come at her they know that they've got a fight on her hands so she is a boomer you've got horses sitting down just below them that haven't quite reached the benchmark basset hound we keep talking about he sits around a 77 rating he's 13 in the all-in winter bottom market that's enormous respect and he'll go around on the weekend and we're looking forward to that to get him up there and getting him more ratings points so he can qualify for that and you know um talking about the four-year-olds a horse that's gone just under the radar a little bit for mine on the weekend and again he's got that low rating and that's rock fest dan and ben pierce's four-year-old yes he was the horse that ran third behind your fate and he's the phoenix and king of light when king of light won the faretha and and the guineas and of course he had the setback and it's taken a little time to get him back but boy what i saw of him on the weekend i like he's all horse he's a he's a specimen and you know whilst he is um i think what's still a 75 rate or thereabouts of the weekend he's got to win a peter's stakes to qualify to get into the railway i really hope that he does because this batch of four-year-olds is exciting they've still got plenty of racing in them and we need horses to take over the mantle of the western empires and co yep that have been there and yeah done that do you
Speaker 2reckon he's finished on western empire i thought he was okay there on the weekend and watching me right speak the
Speaker 19other you learned yeah and look you know we're going through a big change with things we mentioned this again on the weekend you know you you don't have the polish of the the brilliant alana williams in the at the moment with with what's going on in their circumstance and i haven't heard any more about the stay i know it's put in but we don't know whether or not um it's going to be heard in the appeal date but you know you don't have to have much go wrong and you can be a percentage or two away from what you normally do and things don't quite go the way that you hope now i'm not saying that he was disappointing on the weekend but um when he learned to them he'd give it away and that's not his go he's normally the one hitting the line so uh we'll sit back and assess maybe after what we saw there and and and what you know we're going to hopefully see again from this great horse but they don't race on forever um and he's been an absolute superstar
Speaker 2yeah um and it's going to be a great carnival i reckon it's got a great mix as you just pointed out um from the the the horses that have been there done that and reached great heights with some um rising stars coming through the ranks and then with the quality from the eastern states taco beats paparazzi in a photo there you go tough day to the punters club but you know um why don't we fall to get back up again darren now cosmic crusader corfield cup now to a cox plate someone told me um if the indom if the inter-dominium was next week you'd enter cosmic crusader for that bob but i love it they're bred to be racehorses um he would people go it's an afterthought i reckon bob would have had this at the front of his mind when they prepared this horse um for his preparation and i reckon he's a chance in the cox play why can't he win the
Speaker 19cox play will you tell me what's largely different from the turnbull well
Speaker 2there's nothing really it's wait for age it's not set weights and penalties um rage yeah it's white no trouble yeah he's got to take on some three-year-olds but that's it
Speaker 19that's all right he's no northerly but northerly came out of a corfield cup winning and absolutely gave them a pants job in the cox yeah late that year it was just a track gallop for him so there's no reason why he can't come back barrier eight there he was given a beautiful ride by willie just don't think he got the mile and a half at the end of it all gareth it was just the last furlong that he he felt the pinch and now he comes back to 2000 flemington where he won the turnbull um um you know he dominated there and he dominated many of the horses that are his rivals on the weekend uh what why can't he why can't he go out and win a cox plate yeah uniquely as it is around flemington not many valley of course good on bob having a dip why wouldn't you you got a horse who's absolutely rock hard fitting and you know that you'll love flemington and you know that at the end of the 2000 he'll be there and uh have his head somewhere in front i
Speaker 2agree with you i think he's a great h-way bet and you know what a bit like the turnbull stakes he's the forgotten horse um and he's a big price if the rain comes that'll even help his cause more and piking can just he doesn't have to really worry about anything he can just drop him out and hopefully get a card into the race and i think he rode him too well there the other day was it was a pike special from that gate to land where he did but as pike he said after the race william he said he's probably he probably settled too close um so yeah i reckon he's a great each way chance and all right and it's going to be a truly run cox plate with the two ma runners that are set to set yeah yeah yeah a lot it's going to
Speaker 19be run 2 000 meters and that that'll just suit him beautifully there he can switch off uh pikey can get him to just find his rhythm and put him in the right place and then he's going to be able to get and put him to sleep and then get him going again and you know they wouldn't have had to do too much with him through the course of the week and it wasn't a gut buster for him in the corfield cup either he did sit in the sweet seat all the way and got out at the right time he just didn't get the 2400 strongly to win the race but he was right there so you know he's a he's a super chance and we'd love over here at least to see him win that as well um our attention's going to be on irish day gareth we uh we've got the big irish day card here featuring the belgravia stakes the belgravia as they like to say it on irish day and you've got the returning baity back in action yeah um he's a machino he's up against mitchell pateman's um winner of the max simmons big red zoo um pistone is another very talented horse that the inform mitchell stable have got going around at the moment he's a machine uh uh he's got a very talented horse we've got a very talented horse that we've got uh another very good addition it was um so the the casey boys haven't won this race yet and surprisingly i was just going through some past belgravia stakes winners it's a fair old roll call isn't it early season three-year-olds king of light last year um super smink three years ago amelia's jewel four years ago search and rocks went on to become a grand mayor and then perfect jewel perfect reflection that's just uh in the last 10 years the horses that have won that and and dan morton and simon miller have dominated it but yet they don't have a runner in the race this year so um the casey boys who have had this great crop of last season two-year-olds have got them back and there's some real talent there including of course baity who maybe should have won a caracatta plate the size of perth stakes and totally dominated but for missing the start badly in the caracatta and the fire of giddy coals has made the form fantastic with his blinding run first up there's a lot of horses over here at the moment which are creating an enormous amount of talk and it'd be the best that i've probably struck for a fair while gareth um which is fantastic for what we can expect over the next month or more and it's
Speaker 2exciting because william pikes obviously with his commitments in melbourne and he'll be you in melbourne for a few more weeks landing up to the carnival but there's a lot of jockeys that are riding horses that he usually writes like a fire of giddy coals and those type of horses beaty and he would probably still get first use but if they if those jockeys like a lucy fiora wins on these type of horses um then it's hard to take them off really unless pike's got a guaranteed return to them when we mentioned
Speaker 19roger earlier you know yeah roger will go to a guineas and you know you'd imagine that chris part was putting his hand up to danny morton now and saying i want the right i'm here i want a commitment i'll give you the commitment and it works both ways so um you know that's one that pikey probably won't get back on at this particular stage possibly possibly you're right you've got you've got chris you've got lucy uh the hyphenator all sitting in the wings waiting to pick up these rides and you know brad part of them probably you know in that tier of jockeys as well so i think it's going to be a lot of fun and i think it's going to be a lot of fun and i think so while pikey's away the other boys will play and they'll play as hard as they can to try and get the best rides that they can going into the the premium races of this pinnacles carnival
Speaker 2100 hey can you do me a favor on irish day then cop
Speaker 19yeah go on mate can
Speaker 2you call the first race um as an irishman to be sure to be sure
Speaker 19i can do that for you just entertain us
Speaker 2we're in the
Speaker 19entertainment it's a great day irish day is wonderful one of the best days it's one of my favorite days they are there en masse the irish they don't miss i wish we could have irish day once a month um because the crowds are just overflowing um it'll be a huge huge day there um and just on the weekend gone the second saturday meeting normally is a bit more quieter than opening day because everyone's excited to be there and to get back to headquarters normally it's a bit quieter last weekend was completely different they introduced a new concept called the ascot social and the demographic the young people that turned up on mass was overwhelming uh they had a particular area for them near the 100 150 meter mark they had the obligatory dj pumping out his music down there they were well dressed they were enjoying it and when the meeting sort of continued to unfold the crowd got bigger and bigger again and again the outside running rail and they were taking a genuine interest in what was going on not just the social side of it which many do but a genuine interest um and coming back and and getting involved uh and actually acknowledging the the winning horses with you know cheering and all that type of thing so it was that demographic 20 to 25 year olds and it was just heartening to see it um the way that uh a day which would have normally been a bit on the quieter side there and a bit flat after a big return um could produce those kind of numbers so perth racing might have something there that is going to get bigger and bigger as time goes on ascot social day two of the new season i like what i saw love it
Speaker 2um good on you cop we could talk all day but we appreciate your time as always and we'll catch up with you next week good as go

Speaker 2fearless bandit that was the first time i've um heard that race call back russell veach and he just nailed it the final ever race there at wentworth park 94 years of history and magical ang who i don't think the trainer peter legosiani's won now three million dollar chases gave a chance as i welcome in the team hello to you georgie ferugia
Speaker 21g'day mate g'day jace how are you i'm well boys good to be here on what was a special night lots of memories that come out of it as soon as you
Speaker 2heard that roar even in the first race and then the second race like there's there's rules of different race tracks and thoroughbred tracks harness tracks but um when you get six and a half thousand wentworth park and you can't move in the favorite lobs in the first and rails through that raw like it would live for me for a long time there jace yeah i
Speaker 21think most of us feel like wentworth park in in recent years when no one's there it's one of the worst tracks in australia from an atmosphere point of view when it's packed the way the noise bounces around the joint is just the joy in australian racing so yeah early on when those favorites were lobbying um the joint was rocking but unfortunately not in uh peter legosiani's case but um the result of the main race ended up being the more the most hush hushest noise that the crowd produced or not given she was uh bolter's odds well i
Speaker 2think everyone was stunned weren't they georgie
Speaker 22yeah look she just outpaced them and and she was off and gone and in fairness to her she ran 29 46 and i mean all three of us are pretty big fans of storm hustler and he's run the start before the race before he went 29 48 so she's she's matched up with a greyhound that we think he's emerging and he's probably a phoenix uh shot it was like the coliseum wasn't it there it really was the the crowd the noise catching up with people um it is and even the setting of wentworth park as i said you can never be able to replicate that smack bang right in the heart of the city it
Speaker 2was it was awesome and why do you need to do the form for a million dollar chase just follow pl yeah pl peter legosiani joined us after magical ang calls one of the greatest upsets in the 94 year history of wentworth park and he joins us now um as it's sunken yet peters we welcome you back to giddy up in the weekly
Speaker 23chase good morning guys uh i don't think this one will ever sink in um yeah uh surprised shocked uh yeah all those three uh the two feelings and uh the third one well i can't say on air because yeah i've already been uh hammered for it on social media but uh mate um just uh trial of emotions uh after the race and uh look we we we went into that race hoping and praying you know you have a look at those uh there was a string of dogs there that that had the form on the board and and and just read you know million dollar chase winners you know or soon to be million dollar chase winners you know i think you know seven out of the eight you know i think i was the one the only one left out to say that i couldn't win it so um to win it you know kudos to ourselves to the to the dog more importantly she's you know uh we got her right on the night and she did the rest so um you know yeah to answer your question mate i'm shocked i think you
Speaker 2described your first million dollar chase as a miracle or a fluke i remember you telling me friday night how would you describe this one the two colonnaded
Speaker 23together we'll put in a bag shake it up and just throw it in out in the air you know on a windy day and let it blow away that's explain it to you is it just you know it it wasn't meant to be it just wasn't meant to be and it and it happened pete
Speaker 22congratulations again uh i've told you congratulations a few times and uh sort of taking the p1 double s out of you for your language on air which i thought was was awesome because it's just pure emotion and um you know us in this room haven't been able to experience winning a race like that but her winning that race against what you said against that field she's won 13 out of 37 does it change your way of thinking for the next six weeks now i mean were you originally thinking of coming to melbourne are you thinking of coming to Melbourne now, I mean, what changes now with Magical Ange after, you know, not destroying that field, but beating a top-quality field?
Speaker 23Oh, look, you know, when you win races like this, you know, your intentions are to travel. You know, when you beat the best, you know, you want to travel. You do want to race them again and compete. You know, we know she's competitive. Look, we know what this girl can control. We know what this girl can run. We've, you know, she's in our kennel. We just know what these dogs can run, some of these dogs, what they can run. You know, it's phenomenal. The track's getting fast. I mean, Jungle Johnny, you know, eclipsing 29 seconds at Wentworth Park. Who would have thought that it'd ever happen? It did. You know, what a freak of a dog, you know, and there's 29.2, 29.1 dogs, 29.0 dogs that are running that sort of time and doing it more frequently than they've done in the last six months. You know, kudos to our new track curator that we stole from you guys. You know, good old Corey. So, look. Of course, you know, it doesn't change. Yes. Did we have it in the back of our heads? Yes. Will we do it? Well, time will tell.
Speaker 21Pete, speaking of that next six weeks, I'm sure you're aware that SEN have a slot in the Phoenix and Gareth is on the front foot wanting to negotiate with trainers on air. Now, I'll give you first crack. Is there an offering you've got for G-Man and SEN as to what you're willing to settle on for the Phoenix?
Speaker 2Well, don't. You've won a million dollars. So, maybe I'll give you $20,000 in. $20,000? Oh, this is awesome. Well, he did say he was a miracle to win the million-dollar chase. He's got to come all the way to the Meadows.
Speaker 23It's $200,000 if he wins. Now, listen, Gareth. I pray a lot and I believe in God. So, let me tell you something. As long as he's on my side, I don't care what you give me. Yes. I love it, Pete. Just to be in a race like that will be an absolute, you know, credit to us as trainers and credit to the Greyhounds. So, even to be thought about. You know, having a slot, you know, or being, you know, being picked to represent a slot holder, you know, something like that, it'd be great. But, look, until it happens, you don't know. And just make sure I don't do any post-race interviews anymore. That's all. No, no, no. Well, you know what?
Speaker 2We encourage it. If it wasn't any good, then Roscoe, the director upstairs, would have. Toddy, I should say, the director upstairs, would have cut you off, but he just let it roll. I don't know.
Speaker 22I've never heard swearing like that since the Tupac video, man. I thought it was absolutely brilliant. We got the tale of two things.
Speaker 23I was with you on Saturday night, George, so please, all right? Yeah, yeah, yes, yes.
Speaker 2It was. And how are you feeling now? Like, you don't go. And I was staying near Wentworth Park there. So, we're there Friday night. We went home on Sunday. And I walked past it again. It's weird, really. It was like that. It's all over.
Speaker 21They're already taking the boxes out and done all that. They didn't muck around. The morning after, it was stuff being shipped out.
Speaker 23And it was no waiting. It's so surreal. It's so surreal, you know, Wentworth Park's been taken off the old streets. You know, it's been taken off the, you know, the.
Speaker 21Where you nominate.
Speaker 23Where you nominate and where you book your trials and on the clock. And it's just. It's so surreal. And I went and had dinner with my parents last night. And my sister said, so that's it? There's what? Is there going to be a meeting once a month? I said, that's it, Maria. No more. Just no more. And she just. Looked at me and went. You know, she said the F word. You know, she got the F for me. And she went, really? In the blood. I said, yeah. She's in the family. Yeah. And I said, that's it. You know, it just feels so surreal that we've lost, you know, like, you know, Russell said, the lady of Greyhound Racing in New South Wales. And she's gone forever now. So, there's just memories now. And that's all it's going to be. So, where do they race Saturday night then?
Speaker 2Where's the Metro meeting? Gosford, Shotsam, isn't it, Pete?
Speaker 23Yeah. Yeah. Gosford, yeah. It's going to Gosford now for the next 12 months, I believe. And then Richmond will be showcasing the city racing for 12 months after that. And hopefully, we'll have a track that we can call our own. You know, let's hope the two heads, the GBOT and Geronis W, can put their differences aside and do what they should be doing best, is looking after the participant in the Greyhound.
Speaker 22Yeah. I was going to ask you about that quickly, Pete. I mean, what's your thoughts on it all? It's quite disappointing. It's quite disappointing, even from people from Victoria here, that it's got to a stage with all the other people, like animal activists, that are pounding on top of us. The last thing we want to do is fighting amongst each other. I mean, what are your thoughts here? I mean, I think at the end of the day, all participants just want a state-of-the-art track, right?
Speaker 23Of course, mate. You hit the nail on the head. Look, we're killing ourselves with a thousand cuts. You know, us participants are allowing these activists to be active. I mean, we've got to shut them down and shut them down, you know, as soon as they open their mouths. You know, we're not bad people. We're good people. We look after our animal. Look, it's a part of history. It's part of culture here in Australia. Captain Cook landed on Australia with a Greyhound. You know, that was his pet. So, you can't say that we've just brought him in just to race. They're part of our culture. They're a part of our history. You know, us trainers, participants, owners, breeders, we've got to stick together. You know, we've. We're so divided. You know, GWIC's coming to New South Wales, you know, and, you know, a lot of people are making a mockery of what they're doing. Just let them do it. Let them be. They're a bit harsh in some, you know, with their standards, but let's roll with it. Let's live with it. Let's get on with it. Let's just be. Let's just stand as a united front instead of, you know, the backstabbing that you see and the comments that are made on social media. Look, if somebody makes a mistake, they make a mistake, you know. At the end, we're only human, you know. And if you can show me somebody that's perfect or there is perfect out there, I'd like to see it. I think a million of us out there would like to see that, too, because there isn't. So, you know, with this world that we live in today, this unjust world that I believe it is, with everybody being so divided, how about we just put that down? Wave the white flag. Who cares if it hurts your pride and your ego? You know, we've got. Have a look what happened on Friday night at Wentworth Park. Just have a look at that. It was. The word amazing doesn't describe that. It's not fitting. It was. You just. You don't get nights like that. And people came to see the end. You know, imagine we can build something better than Wentworth Park, you know, not identical to the queue, even better than the queue, you know, and replicate what they're doing. And let's see. Bring those people to the track and let's see that as a start, you know, not an ending this time.
Speaker 21As a three-time million-dollar chase winner, have you thought about building your own track?
Speaker 23You can put the kids through school now. Oh, mate, they're going through school. Don't worry. I've already got. They want an e-bike or whatever they call it now.
Speaker 22Oh, you're in trouble this Christmas, Pete. There are absolutely no excuses, mate. We're in trouble every Christmas, George.
Speaker 23No, mate. Yeah, look, we're just. Like I said, we're just wrapped. We've done it three times. Mate, it's a blessing. You know, it's replicable. It's replicable. It's replicable. If it isn't, it isn't. It's just. Yeah, look, life goes on. We're out today, you know, doing the usual scooping, checking, racing, slipping, racing tonight. So, yeah, it goes back to work fairly quickly here. Yeah. Any winners for us, Pete? Sorry, any? Any winners.
Speaker 2Something. Winners? You gave us. You gave us. Your mate has put a line through the million-dollar chase winner, so let's hope you're a better judge than you were Friday night.
Speaker 23Well, let me tell you, as a tipster, mate, I don't get paid. Yes. You know, look, we've got a couple in tonight at Richmond. I think the latter one should go a right rare earth, and that's all I've got to say about that. You're a rare man. We've got a couple in Augusta, too, we're hoping.
Speaker 2You're a rare man, and you're in rare air. Three million-dollar chases, and everyone said, well, this is a race that would change people's lives. Well, it's changed Pete's life three times. How lucky is he? Enjoy it, mate. Congratulations. And, yeah, well done. So happy for you. Thank you, guys. There we go. Thank you, guys.
Speaker 23No, thank you very much.
Speaker 2Thank you very much. Peter Lagoziani. The winning million-dollar chase
Speaker 22trainer, and he's done it again, Georgie. Unbelievable. And it's incredible to think that all three of them weren't really in the market, Gareth, when they won it. Probably Mystic Riot was the most, given the most chance out of all three of them. But to get a $34 winner, I think Hanson Prince was 16s or 17s as well. The Tassie Dog, yeah.
Speaker 2What was the turnover like? Have we got numbers there?
Speaker 21Yeah, big, big. I think it's the second biggest meeting in history. It was in New South Wales. Okay. What was the biggest? Wow. One of the earlier million-dollar chases, pre-COVID maybe. So in this era where we have seen a falling off since COVID, COVID was a high, not that we're lower than what we were pre-COVID, but since that turning point, it's been one of the biggest meetings that the country's ever seen.
Speaker 22And just quickly, Gareth, on what Peter Lagoziani touched on, when is it, when will it become a thing where some journalists online are held accountable? For their comments. There was a couple of journalists who were pretty famous in Sydney who made some comments about grand racing and what happens to them after they finish that are totally factually untrue. And they just, they get on Twitter. They've got their, you know, thousand. Who are they? We'll get them on this show.
Speaker 21The ship's sailed. No, no. The ship's sailed. It's gone. That is a modern era of social media.
Speaker 22But Jason, when are they going to be held accountable for saying rubbish about greyhound racing? And then what shits me is that then there's people who are sitting on the fence making decisions based on a tweet. of these idiots. I know what you're saying. But what's the penalty for them though? pull them up and then what well if they're a true journalist that you do your research and you do your homework and actually do the right thing instead of just making a comment yeah yeah it's just it's ridiculous yeah well
Speaker 2you try and well you call them out and you make them accountable but you like they forget that's people livelihoods and this is what they've they've been um born to do in a way and there's and i think that i get sad oh it makes me really sad that you get people that have opinions that don't know what they're talking about regarding this um and how it affects other people yeah like it's not nice and these kids go to school they're they're they're children of greyhound traders and and it's just it's it's not fair and i think that you should be called out for that yeah um when you make up stuff about people when you don't know what you're talking about just to suit your own agenda just makes me so angry i think that the keyboard's the biggest
Speaker 21weakness in australian society and probably around the world as well so um just just on a more positive note i just want to congratulate greyhound racing new south wales and the way they presented that night last friday it wasn't overdone it was perfect it's a cracker what happened after the last race was just emotional and it was really special they had a a bloke under the spotlight playing the bagpipes towards a long way to the top by acdc it was just it was just fitting it just felt really good it felt emotional and everything it should have been and in the end a strong celebration on what has been one of the more iconic venues in australian
Speaker 2it was a perfect send-off and the best funeral that you could go to um someone said to me i totally agree with that time for a break we'll come back with plenty more straight
Speaker 1after this join the conversation text us on 04009 736 736 live across australia this is giddy up with gareth hall welcome
Speaker 2back to giddy up gareth hall jason adams georgie forage and the top gun panel meets this weekend i wonder if magical lands will get a slot in the top gun is the million dollar chase winner it's an interesting
Speaker 21question yeah at least in my personal opinion and i'm on a panel so i can't say a heap but yeah i mean she's in the conversation she's not a walk-up starter yeah no that's my view yeah
Speaker 22i tell you one dog who's who is a walk-up start in the in the stay as top gun and that was magpie wow i mean is he getting better jace he went 41 28 guys and well only just a touch over a length outside the track well is
Speaker 21this eliminating the the drama of which he faces in a lot of his races by a lot of the time he's not getting that well so his draws have helped of more recent time but he has been more advanced in the in the race of which we've been used to he's the second best day in
Speaker 2the country second yeah clearly miss envy would belt him up every time now i
Speaker 22don't know what her health status is but we'd like to see that in the top stays top yeah i reckon he'd would you right now would you tip him ahead of her or would you still go miss envy
Speaker 21no i'd probably still go miss envy yes even though you think maybe has jack smith's top gun in the race of which we've been
Speaker 22talking about before but i don't know if jack smith unlocked the first 100 meters of his racing or do you think it's just a anomaly it's a purple patch okay what about
Speaker 2jack said uh when they said to him in the interview i don't know who it would have been mick cowley interviewed him are you emotional that we're saying goodbye to whitworth park and in true jacksby style he goes oh probably no we've had success here but jeez i'm sick of climbing those mountains from forbes um and so forbes is probably he's a he's he he travels everywhere really he hasn't really got a home state has he it's new south wales but he'll go up to queensland he doesn't miss a carnival really bit of a vagabond yeah he is um so yeah that top gun um pattern will meet it's pretty easy to pick the first four isn't it yeah
Speaker 21the first four is always pretty straightforward but after that you're splitting hairs particularly still after yeah
Speaker 2oh look again i'm on
Speaker 21the panel so what can i say but you'd assume those two would be the probably the first two to go in uh he'd assume those two would be the probably the first two to go in uh he'd assume those two would be the probably the first two to go in uh he'd assume
Speaker 22he's in tonight wrongly accused dollar 20 at the meadows on a
Speaker 2wednesday no good thing well after the adelaide cup yeah well you know everything like carrying rising and wrongly accused they all get beat yeah yeah like who would have thought magical lands what i've learned in racing is that there
Speaker 22are no rules the the thing that surprised me the most with magical land not not that she's not a fantastic chaser was pound keeping couldn't have began any better either and she was the ended up being the favorite went 29 20 the week before but um pressure was on and magical lands just went whoosh go what about
Speaker 2mini finn she had four runners in the last ever million dollar chase and if you told her before the race the jungle johnny will get belted after the start yeah you think well how do i get beat here well
Speaker 22we mentioned it off air um winsome jet and i think russell beach called it in running like he's sat in a nice position third because he's run home he's probably the best part of his racing but they were off and gone out in front so uh yeah it was interesting
Speaker 21and something we highlighted last week was the potential of the noise playing an impact in some of these races i think look you were closer to the crowd than what i was on the night you couldn't hear a thing but it didn't seem like it made any impact to the way dogs began or anything and they weren't
Speaker 22right up close near the boxes there was there was sort of like a little gate wasn't there where there was a bit of a some breathing there was a few dogs that
Speaker 2didn't jump which we all expect that's life that is life hey um we'll take a break we'll preview this big car at sandown tomorrow night next
Speaker 1join the conversation text us on 0-4-double-9-7-3-6-7-3-6 live across australia this is giddy up with gareth
Speaker 2hall stand down tomorrow night it's this is when basically greyhound racing in this state takes center stage now jace yeah well we
Speaker 21had the preludes of the melbourne cup last week which were pretty hot but as we get this time of year george despite there not being a night it's still a decent car there was a lot of noms and some good races a part of it what's your
Speaker 22number one ranked race i'm trying to work out whether your race seven where hurricane takes on house of sins or is that incredible free-for-all at the top of your building well then you've got
Speaker 21the stayers as well electrify back over 700 meters so he
Speaker 22should win that race though yeah
Speaker 21yeah um from a most likely winner point of view i think sparring race eight number one yeah will be my
Speaker 2best cracking race yeah yeah it is jesus getting to the interesting time of the year especially phoenix perspective like i'm getting itchy fingers really i try little and we'll be looking after our sliding away have you guys
Speaker 21been speaking about it like are you on the move or just sitting on your hands i think they're sitting on their
Speaker 2hands really but i can't say well i say let's get going really i was going to do a deal with peter gojiati and said to hutchie forget about troy dead or true little i just did it i reckon i could have got 2080 out of
Speaker 22him if you did you have you bought any more storm hustler stocks after the weekend jace um no my opinion hasn't really
Speaker 21changed and that's still a very high one but you
Speaker 2know the thing with greyhound racing is that you could probably if you've got a slot you could probably go 20 20 um 2010 2100 like 20 to the to the greyhound owners and keep 80 for the slot holder because you've got a magical end type of situation like it's a great it's a great race for slot holders i if you go and get that deal done with um um like uh what's it called wrongly accused yeah like he could be the best dog in the in the in the race but he'll need luck
Speaker 21well they all need luck in a race 100 if you if you're giving yourself up to that sort of deal you are straight away putting yourself on the back foot and i know you've got examples of magical land i can go through largely a few years ago but how often are we going to get these and 100 000 you want to you want to make sure you're a part of the race i won't
Speaker 22mention the trainer that i seen at at a vet two weeks before that um that uh phoenix and he said what are ladbrokes doing picking scalacci yeah come out and now there's a few
Speaker 2that were doubting ladbrokes i had the last laugh and even sports bet with well she's fast that year so you need a little bit of luck left
Speaker 21out of the top gun 100
Speaker 2but what you do need is belief you need to believe in your chaser and um and forget about all these raps because they went they they smashed the track record they went 498 to that first turn at sandown please give me a spell and i'll give a 60 40 no way and what
Speaker 22about the ooze and ours on on box draw day where oh he's got box one any danger a dog from box one is going to win the finish did you
Speaker 2see mark with um the cox plate last year whoever drew inside v sistina stuffed it up there was there's been people that stuffed up the phoenix box drawer as
Speaker 22well there's another one that i can remember vividly was that i reckon it was aussie secret drew the red and cablens had the three and everyone said oh well that's done for cablens because he's going to get wiped out he missed the start he he let him he let him clearly on the first quarter if you
Speaker 2got a coblens i'll take him every day of the week over wrongly accused at least i'll lead hey georgie where what about your tips i've got 40 seconds all right
Speaker 22race three number two dairy in one of the staying races at sandown tomorrow race three number two dairy for for ned mcdonald who might be a little bit better than me but it's whatever stay in the say in the phoenix with a couple of he's going around uh and the other one is race 10 number seven little monkey who ran fifth in the great chase one by star note get
Speaker 2something on the record we won't go that low probably i'm just stirring the pot really just to see what the other competitors would do just playing reverse psychology well peter gazione's
Speaker 22on the on the um on the call with the owner saying they offered me 20 thank you jason thanks jake uh troy little's going shut up gareth good on you georgie see you brother that is getting
Speaker 2out. We'll catch you again tomorrow.

FAQs

The Geelong Cup is a major Victorian race, and this year's field is one of the strongest in some time. The winner earns a direct entry into the Melbourne Cup, which is why it attracts international and local contenders.

Half Yours was involved in a fall during the Caulfield Cup but escaped serious injury. He has cuts and bruises, is recovering well, and his CT scan results came back clear, though his preparation is over and he will return in the autumn.

The stewards held an inquiry and ruled the fall a racing incident with no one to blame. Jockeys including Rachel King and James Johnston were interviewed, and the panel used multiple angles to reach the decision.

Eliana is a popular tip, with some predicting she'll win ahead of Sir Delius and Chow Wolf. Her preparation and strong last run have impressed analysts, though her barrier 10 draw makes it a tougher task for James McDonald.

The Cox Plate is being run at Flemington due to the redevelopment of Moonee Valley. Capacity is capped at around 35,000, and VRC members have been cleared to attend.

Twilight meetings have increased wagering by 21.4%, which benefits the industry financially. However, trainers argue they strain already short-staffed stables, and some want later training hours or a funded racing school to help.
