Giddy Up Full Show (21/09/26)

The Monday edition of Giddy Up with Gareth Hall covered a dramatic weekend of racing headlined by the Caulfield track controversy. The rail was moved from seven to eleven metres on race morning after jockeys identified safety concerns with exposed plugs in the straight, prompting calls for an independent review into track preparation processes. Ben Melham was the star of the day, riding a Group 1 double for Chris Waller. Angel Capital finally delivered on his potential in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes, while Buckaroo proved too strong in the Underwood Stakes, establishing himself as a serious Cox Plate contender. The Naturalism Stakes saw Zardo qualify for the Caulfield Cup alongside Saint George, while Blind Race's dominant Caulfield Guineas Prelude victory marked him as a rising star. Joe Pride joined the show to discuss Marzu's upset win in The Shorts and confirmed Pride of Jenni's campaign path. Chris Waller's concerns about Aliana's 58kg Melbourne Cup weight sparked debate about the handicapping system, with the champion trainer suggesting the weight could be detrimental to her long-term career prospects.

It's a minute past eight. Let's get stuck into our Monday show.
Speaker 1On Giddy Up, it's time for the Melbourne Breakdown with David Gately.
Speaker 2Hello to you, Gator. Good morning. In fact, we'll get Gator in just a moment. Clint Hutchison's with me as well. Hutchie, hello to you. What a weekend you've had. Good morning. The Mighty Lions. It's all happening. Yeah, it was a sensational weekend. I thought some great racing after a slow start and a controversial start there at Caulfield. Autumn Glow was excellent there in Sydney. And then the Mighty Brisbane Lions came from, picked themselves off the canvas.
Speaker 3And this was after Angel Capital got the cash for you as well. You've been waving the Capital flag everywhere, haven't you?
Speaker 2Unbelievable. And I'll tell you what, because Benny Mellon was at his very best on Saturday, I thought we've got to kick it off. We've got to kick off the show with him because this was one hell of a ride aboard Angel Capital in the Sir Rupert Clark Stakes.
Speaker 4Yellow jersey, recon behind them, then war machine. Regal Award straightens 250 out. A run for Lady Shenandoah up on the inside. Seeples battles on and behind them, Angel Capital right down the outer. Regal Award approaching the 100, Seeples and Angel Capital on the outside. The enigma himself, Angel Capital takes the lead and wins from Seeples.
Speaker 2Angel Capital, he'd been... Well, he'd been close to winning a Group 1 throughout his career, but Saturday was his day. And he was given a peach there by Benny Mellon, who is one of the best big-time riders in the country. And he joins us now. Benny, congratulations.
Speaker 5Morning, fellas. Thank you.
Speaker 2Surely Mr. Zhang gave you a good sling there after that, that ride there on Saturday.
Speaker 5He actually wasn't there, the boss, on Saturday. But they're all very happy to see him finally take off that Group 1. He's, you know, he's always had the ability. He used to win one. And as I said, he's been stiff not to have won one until now. But when he gets his right, you know, his right set up and right conditions, he's a very good galloper.
Speaker 2How confident were you going into this contest, especially after what happened there at the start of the meeting with the rail being pushed out to 11 metres?
Speaker 5I was actually really confident he would win. And then, as I said, he's just such a big horse. And he's just a little bit awkward. And like I said, he needs all the track he can get. And so when they chopped it in half, I was a little bit, dim my confidence a little bit. But I always knew we were going to get a pretty sweet run for him. And the right sort of run that he needed with the right tempo and the right surface for him to be able to produce his best.
Speaker 3Yeah. Well done, Benny Hutchins. So the key with him, I mean, obviously he's been frustrating for not only the pundits, but obviously connections as well. But so what's the key? He needs the firm track in 1400. Or could he win over a little bit shorter if he got the right sort of tempo?
Speaker 5Yeah, if he's got the right tempo. But I mean, he's a little bit awkward to place because I think he's well suited to the handicap conditions yesterday. Obviously, you know, we had speed in the race. You've got horses down on low weights that tend to run along a little bit. And his advantage is he can quicken down off, you know, fast sectionals. Run throughout. So I just find when he, these middle distance weight for age races, especially in Melbourne, they sort of lack a little bit of tempo. And at 1400, he can, you know, he can want to get up on the chewy a little bit and overdo it. And then sometimes in a 1200, you know, they go too quick for him. And he just, he's such a big horse, he takes a long time to wind up and find his action and find his rhythm. When he does find it, he's, you know. He's very good. But yeah, he just needs things to go right for him a little bit. And when they do, you can see how effective he is.
Speaker 3Would have been satisfying for you though, having so much to do with the horse from such an early stage as well.
Speaker 5Yeah, for sure. He was deserving of a group one. And obviously, you long purchased a horse from Clint McDonald. But I've had a lot to do with him, obviously, before he went to the races. And he always showed us that he had that kind of ability. And, you know, they do a lot for the industry year long. And it was good to see him be able to tick off a group one for them.
Speaker 2So if Chris Wall asks you, Benny, what do we do with him next? Do we go to an Everest and take on Culling Rising? Or do we step him up to, say, a Chirac with 1600 to 1600 meters with a little bit more weight on his back? What would you do?
Speaker 5Well, I actually had a little conversation with Chris and ultimately it would be probably up to Chris and year long. But I'd really like to see him on the last day. And the sprints run there a little bit fresh. And even with some blinkers on, I just find that the straight track racing suits him. He was unlucky not to win when I rode him up the straight once before. I just think, you know, up the straight, he'd get a chance to build and find his action. You know, and the blinkers might just help him take up a little bit better in a 1200 meter trip. So that was just an idea that I'd floated with Chris. And yeah, I mean, ultimately it would be up to Chris and year long where they decide to go with him.
Speaker 2What about Buckaroo? It was all the talk of a two horse race basically heading towards that Underwood Stakes between Lindemann and also Cosmic Crusader. And I know he SP'd around five or six dollars, but in a way, Birdman was the forgotten horse a little bit there, Benny.
Speaker 5He was a little bit. And, you know, he really came into his own last preparation. I felt from the beginning of his prep, last prep, that he'd really improved as a horse. Really acclimatized well. And he ultimately went on to win that group one up in Queensland. And he'd come back this time and he obviously ran really well first up. He's, yeah, he's been a real revelation, the horse. He's really come into his own. Yeah, I was a little bit worried sort of approaching the corner when the speed sort of come on via Lindemann. I was tracking Cosmic Crusader and he came off the bit a little bit. And so did myself. I just give him a click up into the bridle and he picked him up in, you know, two or three bounds. And then I sort of found myself in front too early, which he was too good and went away from in the end. But I find he's a better chaser and he's probably better suited to just getting there a little bit later than what he did on Saturday. But you'd like to think he's a really genuine live chance in a place like the Cox Plate.
Speaker 3Yeah, I think he proved that. Definitely, yeah, it was a good performance. Not a bad stable to get a couple of great ones for either, Benny.
Speaker 5Yeah, it was actually my first one for Chris and he's been a good supporter of me of sort of recent times. And yeah, it was certainly fantastic to be able to get a group one doubles for him and repay him for that support.
Speaker 2Look out, J-Mac. Here comes B-Mellum, yeah. He's got to feel what J-Mac feels every other week.
Speaker 5Yeah, he's got an easy job, J-Mac. Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2Keep that white Kiwi up in Sydney. Hey, Mood said after the race, he said, this is his quote, he said, after Briar to Waltz, of course, Mood said that, Mellum said, he said the track was too hard. I said he rode her too cocky. Your response to that, Benny?
Speaker 5Well, look, I obviously got a bit of criticism over that, but I do know that mare well. And she's, I've got no doubt she's a better horse when she can get her toe into the ground. And you could see by the times that they were running. That it was, you know, the ground was quick. And even down the side, although she was leading, I felt as though I didn't, you know, I didn't have a lot there when I pressed the button on her. So, and that was due to her feeling the track. So, I had to, I cuddled her for as long as I could because I was just a bit worried about how much was left in the tank. And when I let her go on the ground, she did, she did, she tries her heart out. But ultimately, I felt she just... she didn't really hit her top on that ground. But anyway, everyone's been told their opinion.
Speaker 2You had a pretty good day. And at the start of the day, obviously there was controversy because they had to move the rail from the seven-metre mark down the straight out to 11 metres.
Speaker 3Ben's forgotten about all of that. He's just remembering this day. Yeah, I know. What a magnificent day. What are we talking about, plugs? Who's got plugs?
Speaker 2I need a few of these days off the top of my head. So explain what happened, Benny.
Speaker 5Well, obviously everyone saw the state of it. It was a little bit unfortunate, but thankfully they were able to rectify the situation. I suppose the concern from a jockey's perspective and trainers was if a horse galloped over one of those plugs and kicked the plug out and the next horse came along behind it and stuck their foot in a hole, it could have been sort of catastrophic, to be honest. But plugs are a common practice, and I've seen them before walking the tracks, but it was the first time that I've put my walking stick in the ground and actually a plug's come out with the stick. So anyway, as I said, fortunately enough, it was able to be rectified in a timely manner, and thankfully for me, we were able to kick on with the day.
Speaker 3And once they moved that rail out on the other side of effectively where all the plugs were placed and they were all sort of in the straight, how did you feel that the track did right?
Speaker 5Yeah, look, I felt it rode a little bit sort of leaderish to begin with, and then the inside, it just copped a little bit of wear and tear, and off a genuine speed, you were able to make ground, which is evident sort of later in the day. But just with the rail out that far, as Mark Zara said, you've just got to get your angles right a little bit. You don't want to be sort of exposed too far. Too early and you're covering a heap of ground around the turn. You've got to sort of, you know, wait as long as you could and nearly till you'd straightened before you edge out to make your run.
Speaker 3It's going to have a big impact then on the Manicato, Benny, because they're saying that the rail, I think, is out 13 metres.
Speaker 2That'll announce this morning. That's what I'm hearing. That's been confirmed that the stewards will have to have a look at the track and then they'll make the decision. That'll be interesting. Yeah. Who are you riding in the Manicato?
Speaker 5Skybird at this stage, I think. I think that'll be weather dependent.
Speaker 2Yeah. The rail at 13 metres will be interesting, as you point out, Benny. Like for the punters out there trying to do their form.
Speaker 5Yeah, it just makes for ordinary racing, in my opinion. Yeah. Explain why. Well, it's just, obviously, it impacts the field sizes. I don't think it will, they said, when I, yeah. Well, I thought there was enough horses getting around on Saturday with the rail in that position. So, obviously, it's going to be out further and tighter again. So, yeah, look, it might be ideal, but at the end of the day, I'm not sure what options they have. Anyway, it'll be much better suited in their true position.
Speaker 2Yeah, I think on Sunday that they'll have the rail out 13 metres and then by the time the Caulfield Guineas meeting comes along, I think we'll be back into the true or close to anyway. Anyway, it was an interesting day there at Caulfield on Saturday, but you had a big day, Benny. Big time rider. Yeah. Group one action. Obviously, you followed Pikey's speed map there in the Underwood Stakes. You followed Pikey everywhere he went and away you went.
Speaker 5Yeah, I knew nobody would have done their forehand. I would have gone to his coach and told him where he was going.
Speaker 2And then Angel Capital, mate, who would have thought? Surely, you'll get a few service fees there with the son of Harry's angel after that group one victory, surely.
Speaker 5You never know your luck in the big smoke. One will be fine, mate. It'll be okay. I'll be happy with one.
Speaker 2It's good to see you're the star of the household once again with those two group ones. It'll only last a couple of weeks, so enjoy it.
Speaker 6Yeah, I will. I will.
Speaker 2Well done, mate. We appreciate your time as always. Thanks, guys. There we go. Benny Mallon. He's it. He rode beautifully there on Saturday, especially with those two horses. Oh, definitely. Buckaroo and Angel Capital, yeah. We'll take a break. Gator's going to come on the line straight after that. It's 8.14. This is Giddy Up on this Monday morning.
Speaker 1Join the conversation. Text us on 0499 736 736. Live across Australia, this is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall. On Giddy Up, it's time for the Melbourne Breakdown with David Gateland. Hello to you, Gator. A very good morning to you, mate.
Speaker 2What did you make of the weekend's racing?
Speaker 7Oh, it was fabulous. Some great racing. I've had a great time. It was a little hiccup at the start, but I thought the track played pretty well. It looked a bit up and in early, but then things levelled out really quickly, and by the end, they were edging off the inside, weren't they? It was like the core field of old.
Speaker 2Yeah. There's a few text messages coming through. There's an elephant in the room. I'll get it out of the way nice and early. Gareth, your show is sponsored by the MRC. You even had the logo over your left shoulder, at least to meet you a compromise in discussing the track issue. That is incorrect. I can say whatever I want about the track. Now, I've rang a few people. This has got you fired up. No, it hasn't got me fired up. It hasn't got me fired up, but there'll be a review to this.
Speaker 3Who's doing the review?
Speaker 2I think that it should be an independent review. Racing Victoria will talk to the MRC. At the moment, the MRC, they believe they produced a track that was ready to race on Saturday. The jockeys, you heard from Benny Mellon that they thought it was unsafe, so they talked to the stewards, and the stewards who take control of the racetrack once they get onto the course deemed that they had to move the rails out 11 metres, and that's what they did. The meeting went ahead. Now, this can't happen again. This can't happen again, really, because you can't have a race meeting where everyone's done their form, and the rail's out seven metres, and they push it to 11. So, everyone needs to get together, and they need to get around a round table, and they need to work out what happened, why this happened. They need to do a proper review. They need to come back and tell us, and then we can all move on and enjoy a wonderful spring carnival, Hutchie.
Speaker 3And it's a pretty- Oh, look, there's something must be wrong with the processes if they thought it was fine. And then you get- Yeah. And it's deemed it isn't. And I think if you were out there and you saw what was happening, then you'd understand that you could understand concerns, put it that way. So, yeah, in terms of tracks, et cetera, leave it to people who do it. But you'd have to, from an outsider's point of view, and from someone who's a layman with regard to all that, well, you think, well, what's happened here? What's gone wrong there? You felt that the track was fine, and the jockeys and stewards feel it isn't. So, there's something wrong.
Speaker 2And I would imagine at the end of the day is that the MRC- MRC can produce the track thinking that it's ready to go and it's a safe track. But if the jockeys walk the track, and there's a few of them that believe that they can't compete on it because they think it's unsafe, then it's- The stewards have to listen to them because if something does happen, and the jockeys warn the stewards and nothing can happen, and then everyone's in big trouble. Yeah.
Speaker 3Yeah. I mean, just before Gator steps in, and I'm sure he'll have an opinion on it. But, I mean, my understanding is that, yeah, they often have these on tracks. But I'm not sure of when they're normally put in and how much, you know, whether or not you necessarily compete on them. Often, they're on the other side of the rail. So, I'll look that up.
Speaker 2And this is when the review, hopefully, will come out, and it'll explain it to us all. And, like, as you pointed out, Gator, when they moved out the rail to 11 metres, I thought, oh, what's going to happen here? Like, big fields. I thought the track, from a punting perspective and watching, I thought it played pretty well. Every horse had their opportunity. They did get to the middle part of the track. As the meeting went on. But we had horses win from everywhere there on Saturday Gator.
Speaker 7Yeah. Zero issue from that perspective. So, you know, thankfully, you know, I think, you know, we're all on record, many of us anyway, saying kind of need to be treated as, you know, first and foremost. But even beyond that is obviously safety. I guess the question I'd ask is, what would have happened if jockeys didn't walk the track? If they didn't or weren't able to on that given day for whatever reason? And so the problem was never found. I think that's the question I'd be asking. And how do we alleviate that going forward?
Speaker 2And that's what the question, there's a lot of questions that need to be answered. But the MRC have got professionals there presenting the track and they thought that it was ready to go. And then the stewards and then the jockeys who alarmed the stewards, then they walked the track and they made a decision. Hang on, we've got to move the rail out. Yeah.
Speaker 3So once again, there's something wrong with the processes somewhere. Correct. Because if you're checking and thinking it's okay, now there's a problem. If the jockeys are checking it and saying, no, this is not, then they need to have a sit down. I wouldn't imagine. Yeah.
Speaker 2And so, and like at the end of the day, whoever is right, whether there was an overreaction or that the MRC got it wrong, that there needs to be a decision. That needs to be a practice that this doesn't happen again, because you can't have the rail go from seven to 11 an hour before group one day when people have started to bet on a race track. But I think that, yeah, it'll play out over the next couple of days. And the rail will go from seven to 11 an hour before group one day when people have started to bet on a race track. And the rail's out, which is going to be interesting for a group one day, but I think that they've got no other option, but to have that rail out there.
Speaker 3Once again, I'll leave it to the track managers. I'm not sure if there are, I mean, I don't know. Could they go back to the true and then come out again? I don't know.
Speaker 2Anyway, let's get stuck into our breakdown and we'll kick off with the Angel Capital Race. Again, the Sir Rupert Clark Stakes. We just watched the replay Gator and it was his day. It was a beautiful setup. He got the rock hard track that he wanted and he won like a good thing. in the end.
Speaker 7yeah look he did he won well um as you say it couldn't have been a more ideal setup for him and that historically is what he's needed you know he's needed a little bit of a goldilocks scenario um and i don't think he's disingenuous at all i think he's he has great application and appetite for the contest but his challenge is he just doesn't quicken immediately especially over the shorter trips but then builds his speed builds his speed so that lends him um or leaves him vulnerable when gaps close they don't quicken into them um this time you know if you're off a really strong speed midfield to always cover clear air on a level playing field if you're good enough you win um and he was good enough and he won uh sepals was um really good he was an exceptional winner of this race last year and this year up to 56 and a half you know but the relative weight and sitting closer to that um that speed than the winner he beat all bar one and uh regal award was was terrific wasn't he um i know he only had the 52 and a half but he going 47 and a bit of change first 800 as his jockey said lucky he just couldn't get that 200 meter rest that he probably needed mid-race and what he needed i thought was last time's corfield track where leaders were winning everything um you know and then he probably holds them off lady shenandoah is such disappointing um and that was the race i think you know von hawk good for the right race evaporate forgive file um i've had enough of per
Speaker 3and spirit and a few of them yeah hutchy yeah i can't really add too much to what gator said i mean i think angel capital deserved it uh good performance look i want to mention cliff brown's pair what a run from sepals first up decent speed gee that was some sort of effort and going back through sepals form i don't know i think there's uh there's another good race in has to be the track doesn't it you think so next start second up like it'll uh and you know the good thing with sepals it can take a position it'll handle any ground von hawk goes the epson so i thought both of those were outstanding but um i thought lady shenandoah probably had a chance didn't she she she was she was there if she was good enough yeah i think lady shenandoah that's
Speaker 2lady shenandoah these days um she's a good third or fourth place i see your face screw up there i feel sorry i feel sorry for her because she she's she's a multiple group one winner yeah um but she just um has been able to she's competing in a generation few of a few stars that are just better than her um so i think that's a good thing i think that's a good thing i think that's a good thing i don't i don't know where she's going to win her next race from no well you would have thought this
Speaker 3was a good opportunity for her although historians of the race say that to carry that weight and win
Speaker 2was very difficult for a mayor i think the big question like where is the next race angel capital
Speaker 3is going to win i think they'll go to the everest um i think that's where they'll probably correct
Speaker 2they will go to the everest yeah it's either him or paradoxium you probably go angel capital wouldn't you oh there's there's a case for a three sure yeah which one would you go if you're mr zhang gailer i know that you're on the show the um the tab selection committee but if you're on mr zhang's committee there year long would you go paradoxium or would you go angel capital yeah i've left the phone on no one's rung me but um
Speaker 7yeah i think angel capital beat time paradoxium you'd think but i also think he's vulnerable back at 1200 i don't have him as a live either of them are top four live top four hope yeah um any other
Speaker 2horses that you want to be backing at their next start what races can they win coming out of the race if they want to win the race i think they'll have to wait and see what happens but i think they'll have to wait and see what happens but i think they'll have to wait and see what happens um regal award it was some task they set him in a wonderful training performance really to get these horses to do what he did first up maybe there's a track in him um feroce was good von hawk warny um tom kitten hutch yeah he ran well yeah i mean it was always difficult where he drew
Speaker 3what was going to happen there that he'll go back to he'll go back to wait for age now right so correct i think they'd be happy with that performance i mean there's a couple there i'm just not sure if they're going to win i think they're going to win i think they're going to win i'm just not sure what to do with now like so barge sort of got going when it was all over but i don't know i haven't been that much that taken with either run from him but does he is he looking for further maybe um and regal award regal award was sound as gator said no the one there's only really one i mean i think if apparate pulled up with an issue as well so that that is worth bearing in mind but seppals is the one that i thought wow i mean because there's still i think a bit of room for improvement with his source who's not overly taxed at this stage either hasn't had a whole heap of start so he's a horse he's a nice horse with a good profile and i think he can pretty competitive next time out depending what's in the race i mean i'm not sure what's going to be in the um sure at the moment the market has
Speaker 2angel capital five dollars seppals five dollars regal award nine buck louis 11 with bet 365 and then out to horses like sir barge at 11 so it does look a nice race for him um he's probably too short now and angel capital won't be going there but that's a look at the sarupa clark stakes it's 8 26 we'll come back and have a look at the underwood stakes next
Speaker 1join the conversation text us on 0 4 9 7 3 6 7 3 6 live across australia this is giddy up with
Speaker 4gareth hall on his back as birdman followed by pinstripe buckaroo and middle earth around the corner 350 to go kingswood up to lindemann cosmic crusader and on the archipelago side birdman made a line of four and attrition up on the inside birdman's gone to the front of the 200 birdman put up a length cosmic crusader who can't find birdman is coming away under hands and heels draws the whip comes away birdman too good two legs cosmic crusader so birdman was
Speaker 2sensational there hutchy he raced away and he beat up on his rivals in underwood stakes the question i pose to you can he win a cox plate against sir delius i think he can yeah why not he's in good
Speaker 3form he's um he's winning the race and he's going to win the race and he's going to win the race and doobin was great um was it the dooming cup that he did yeah he's pretty they've found they've found they've found him out now haven't they sort of what suits him good ground but i think he'll handle most conditions but this is sweet spot in this distance range i think even though they bought him i think to compete over further he's um he's going really well his last 12 months has
Speaker 7been fantastic gator uh yeah in a shock to no one uh this stable have worked out their athlete so that's what they do that's what they they do i mean you look at so nature strip went to this stable then very elegant went to this stable after the the darren weir thing and um they were real problem children um to say the very least but i think we all saw extraordinary talent in those two athletes um so look i'm on record i think they're probably the best i've seen you know and and you know going back to some immortals that includes you know cummings and hayes and colin hayes and um they just get their athletes to perform that's their only job if you strip everything else back that's your only job as a coach to get the best out of all of your athletes um and that's what they do and birdman was a problem when he came here maybe he hadn't acclimatized maybe he hadn't whatever the whatever the whatever the reason to get him right and his last two years he's been a great athlete he's been a great athlete he's been a great athlete uh nine months have been brilliant you know he loomed to win an australian cup he was going to win that by seven until he just didn't handle the ground didn't let down on that near heavy track goes to queensland wins exceptionally well sales past pride of jenny and then that went on saturday was excellent i mean it's not as if cosmic crusader was going poorly um you know he's not a hack is he and he gave him windburn not only that he gave him windburn 14 to 1800 second up
Speaker 2so he's now on what birdman for the cox plate he's 650 so deal is 325 we bet 365 aliana was much better there on saturday i'll get to her with you in a minute gator she's at seven dollars an olden boy at nine dollars so birdman big tick cosmic crusader hutch what do you do with him next do you push on to a cox plate or do you think he went like a caulfield cup hope
Speaker 3i haven't had a lot of i haven't had a deep think about it but um like he's he's his campaign has been very hard to knock yes like he's he won his first two then he was very unlucky i think in terms of just the barrier in the way the race fell for him leading into this and i thought the comments post race from willie were willie pike were really interesting you know he said he and that's how it visually sort of looked you know he's he's they've ridden the race here because they felt that lindemann was going to get a cheap lead now lindemann went there and didn't hang around they went quick and his comments post race i think i might have had him a little close he didn't track up into the race like he can and he looked more dour didn't he i think the visuals backed that up so you know i think um once again it probably is a horse that he he'll ride a little bit on more field they've ridden to the to that tactic on the weekend given i think in their mind thinking lindemann's the horse to beat i've got to be a pair close ultimately he was probably close enough so that in that's a very long way of answering your question but i'd go to the cocks i can i can
Speaker 2just hear wayne hawks here on the means test i'd pikey i can't believe he got sucked into everyone's speed map i think i think it was i think it was i think it was a very long way of answering your
Speaker 3i think 99 or 95 out of 100 people would have looked at that race and go well you don't want to let lindemann get away from you so you're going to be close enough and you know in another world where they don't go that quick he's in the right spot but they just weren't a bit quick but he look birdman might have probably beats him anyway so and you but you've been beaten by a good one who's probably going to be one of the main favorites in a cocks plate gator your thoughts
Speaker 7on cosmic crusader yeah he was good he beat everything else clearly you know he had a problem and birdman was too good and not only was birdman too good he was as i said he was only you're early in the prep and you're second up. So, look, had they both hit this fourth up as a target race um you know i would probably look at it a little differently but it's all on us birdman for those reasons i do think cosmic crusade is a length better soft five um and i 100 agree that he's better ridden a pair colder than that you know i think some people still think they're motorbikes and put them wherever you want um yeah it's not i don't think it's the reality um you have to ride them for their best um to use that you know the the get the maximum energy out of them or the wattage power speed at the right time um no different to human athletes in that regard you know i can't see pride of jenny winning a race box city um you know nor nature strip i can't be very elegant leading and winning a race so it's it's i think it's an important factor um and and with that strong speed he was just as you guys are referencing he was just niggled a fair way out wasn't he but um just couldn't hold off birdman beat everything
Speaker 3else rock solid a couple of those other races he ran and he tracked up so well and he gathered them in in like two strides over shorter which is harder to do but like he's a talented horse i think he's you know you'd be you'd be pretty confident he'll run well whichever path they decide to go
Speaker 2but caulfield cups is that what they're no i think that bob's thinking of a few different options whether he thinks he can beat these horses at weight for agent of cox plate or he thinks that he might be in the mix yeah have a go yeah um attrition was it was great to hear mitchell friedman talk on the first word he said this horse around an improved race especially if there's more tempo and he they put him into the contest even though he box seeded he finishes third linda been chris waller telling the the newton boys on correct weight yesterday that he just didn't handle caulfield plus he pulled up with a bit of an issue but they haven't given up on the cox plate they i think that they're going to assess him in the next week or so and there's a possibility they'll give him a chance to win the race so i think that's a good thing i think
Speaker 3an opportunity at flemington i'm holding a grudge i thought he was a good thing on the weekend a lot of people did oh look he just maybe it's caulfield but gee whiz he was gone all fairway i don't know they went quick and and maybe maybe with the maybe back at flemington it'll it'll be better for him but i don't maybe it's direct i mean maybe some horses don't handle them you know both ways are
Speaker 2going someone described me lindeman after his first up effort this preparation he's the worst best horse that i know he's a pretty good horse he's a pretty good horse but he can do that just have a shocker like he's done that i'm telling me yeah gator yeah you can have an
Speaker 7off day can't he but um you know second eye that's fine um i don't begrudge him too much off that but it's uh you know i think the reason why he was popular um he got a really firm track he looked like getting an easy lead now they didn't make it easy on him did they three point three lengths above group on average is a pretty solid clip um but still he's beaten you know lengths and but look it just just not not at his best i mean you go back to his previous two there's a meta run you beat home autumn glow if you don't mind so you know that that's that's worth
Speaker 2noting you can't take that off him but that was off speed that day when nash just said they're going too quick for me he still beat him home gas don't be don't be qualifiers on this i'm
Speaker 3100 he has also run well at flemington and he's failed in the past at caulfield maybe he just
Speaker 2doesn't like caulfield maybe just back him now at 50 to 1 for the cox plate then if it was around
Speaker 7i could have 10 bucks on him at 50 yeah he's an interesting horse linderman so um we'll see what
Speaker 2happens with yeah he's talented enough to be very maybe he needs nash to whisper in his ear maybe i don't know um what about there was uh aliana talking about cox plates it was a different tempo race for her on on saturday compared to say what happened there in the wink steak skater so what did you make of her then after analyzing her performance on saturday yeah so it's interesting
Speaker 7because i think she did a great job on the first look i'm like you know yawn you know had the rails trail out to bed picked up late others made moves before the turn she crossed the line with them you know she crossed the line with uh charlotte no slouch yeah green got tonight or flyer so you wouldn't put that on your cv would you but then i then i had another look um and had a look at the the chopper shot as well and i'm sort of turned around a bit i like the way she built her speed all it's fair enough second up 1600 if she's going to win a melbourne cup or run well in it but then the last 50 she was starting to really build so i marked it i just put in my notes here
Speaker 2just real positive signs um but let's see another run interesting to hear chris wallace saying that weighing up whether they started a melbourne cup now because she got 58 on her back yeah everyone's gone up in the weights haven't they they have yeah but i think he's off i think he understands that but i think he's she's still a relatively young horse whether that will break her heart if he sends her around flemington with 58 on her back over two miles that's so is the corfield cut back on the radar then i don't think so i think they'll go cosplayed into champion stakes if that's the case yeah but i he might be he might be just talking it down christopher and go well we'll see you in the
Speaker 7melbourne cup still but he could do the lee friedman thing can he oh i'm only going to run her if she watered the track yeah yeah but it's too late to bring the weight down the problem is
Speaker 2he started his campaign too late you're going to start the campaign before the weights come out not after we're going to take a break we're going to come back and have a look at the naturalism next
Speaker 1join the conversation text us on 0499-736-736 live across australia this is giddy up with gareth hall
Speaker 4he left the fence around the corner gave a run for deacon up on the inner they were going to start the campaign too late you're going to start the campaign before the weight come out not after we're going to take a break we're going to come back and have a look at the naturalism next we're followed next by asterix zaran now launching down the center also son george running on and wootton bernie over on the far side across the track zaran sprints to the front of the 100 and exploded away zaran coming clear from son george zaran what a link son george so zaran defeat saint
Speaker 2george saint george now qualifies for the caulfield cup people thought geez he's just cocky johnny o'neill what is he talking about when he said you know what gareth i think i'll trifecta along with his part owners the caulfield cup he said um and saint george and saran were part of that trifecta for the caulfield cup they both
Speaker 3ran excellent looking good yeah i love the i love the winner and i love to see that from him um on a quick surface or a good was a quick surface and that's what he's been looking for gee i mean it's pretty exciting for them because he's lightly raced he obviously had a lot of ability in in uh in ireland having run in the irish champion stakes over there and starting well in the market and then coming here he he highlighted gator on that debut with his closing sectionals there there was something pretty special about him and he's probably had excuses um i reckon just with the way tracks or different circumstances but we got to see
Speaker 7what was under the bonnet on the weekend yeah it's a good summary hutch i said he was probably as good as any run in that race first up given the wet track not really his thing given the race shape you know in the days pattern um he was the best of the closes and quite clearly i think the other advantage to him on saturday was not only he drew well and st george asterix um et al did not um but he got the drier track didn't he he got up in tripping and fitter um and a really good win like he didn't immediately quicken when when they pushed the button ethan brown but once he built his speed it was really strong and that augers well doesn't it for 2400 i don't think st george would have lost any fans though um you know he covered a lot of ground with 58 and a half and still learned to win it um asterix uh was huge odds for a good horse he ran really well machine gun grace every chance you know led with 54 nine lengths below average had his chance left the rail perfect ride um wouldn't burn it the injury is a cream was good late so was king's valley if there's a knock on the race the eighth horse has beaten two lengths yeah um nice choice
Speaker 2i thought was pretty good at a price as well yep me old boy sir that's a knock isn't it if they're all running well yeah that's a query i think 550 for the caulfield cup st george eight dollars was very good in sydney at 13 birdman won't go there at 15 even though the chris wallace said we'll keep that door open i reckon you'll see half yours in a caulfield cup hutch i reckon they've they've analyzed the weights and think well his best chance maybe this carnival to win a big one will be the caulfield cup over the cox play to melbourne cup with 57 and a half when he's back um like we didn't touch on buckaroo could you back him in a caulfield cup no no not for me um
Speaker 3he was a very very good run i mean he got he got checked at a key stage for a stay at fleming he's a flemington horse all day melbourne cup wise where's he in the herbert power isn't the herbert power yeah he goes there yeah but i mean they're already in the cup yeah so yeah but they're going
Speaker 2to win some prize money as well as b said he goes like has it changed your campaign regarding the melbourne cup because you know you're in it he goes well you have to yeah but he said no he's he basically said we'll keep to the they're ready to he's ready to win when we want him to win but they're probably realistic that i don't know if they can win the the melbourne cup it's not an easy race to win but he's he's in there with the chance is he better chance than chocolates yes i think so okay gator for the horse yeah they're both um i
Speaker 7think they're both live top 10 hopes without without any chance i think of being top here
Speaker 3yeah um the other really good i'll actually like an import for the cup but i'm just saying i think defiantly he's got a good chance defiantly he's coming
Speaker 2come a long way like they didn't tell me it was much good then all of a sudden a couple of starts over in the uk
Speaker 7With the blinkers on, something changed with him.
Speaker 3Blinkers on in the pre-Kergolay, and he led up there, and he was really good. And you know where you're going to be with him, and you want to make it a test. It'll be an interesting cup this year, actually, the Melbourne Cup, because if he goes forward and makes it a test, look out. Look out.
Speaker 2And Highwayman's another horse that's intriguing, too. He got beat out of sight his first three starts, and then he's become a superstar.
Speaker 3Joseph O'Brien, I mean. Wow, what a star.
Speaker 2Caulfield Guineas Prelude, talking about rising stars. This was nearly one of the performances. In fact, I think, Gator, with your poll, it was the performance of the day, wasn't it? Blind race?
Speaker 7Yeah, he won the popular vote.
Speaker 2We'll watch that replay, then I'll get your comments on it, Gator. All right.
Speaker 4But blind race, cruised away with 100 metres to go, was challenged, but this is easy. So impressive. Blind race bolted in.
Speaker 2Gator, your thoughts there?
Speaker 7Excellent. Just an excellent win. I think if you are writing the script pre-race, you probably didn't have the horse made to work early up outside the lead. If they're going 47.7 first 800, some three lengths above class average, then you get a peaceful time mid-race. But if you're going 47.7 first 800, some three lengths above class average, then you get a peaceful time mid-race. But if you're going 47.7 first 800, some three lengths above class average, then you get a peaceful time mid-race. But then they take off earlier and make you absorb that pressure. So it didn't pan out perfectly by any stretch of the imagination. Yet, he absorbed aforementioned pressure, then raced away with Blake Shin just giggling. You know, I don't think he was ever anywhere near full throttle on that horse. Softest of wins. Yeah, nothing short of excellent. Fast time.
Speaker 3Yeah, that was an impressive performance. He's really come on nicely. I think, I don't know. I don't always read a lot into it, but certainly people that have, you know, examined them in the yard and do a good job. They said, you know, he was, he got very warm before his first up run. There was room for a lot of improvement. They said he looked a different horse on the weekend. I mean, he, he, he was very, very convincing there on the weekend. There was an excuse for American Eagle. Like he, he runs a clear second, doesn't he?
Speaker 2Amy Yagi pointed that out, um, about blind race. He was, he was really warm there before his first up run.
Speaker 3I mean, he travels well. He can take a spot. He's, I haven't sort of, I'm not all over this Sydney sort of three-year-olds gator, but there's obviously one pretty handy one up there and, uh, he's, uh, it looks like those two are probably going to be vying for favoritism for the Caulfield Guineas.
Speaker 2The Caulfield Guineas is crying out for a three-year-old to win, to win nicely and then going into a Cox Plate. And I think it was great to hear Trent Buston and say, well, we go to the Caulfield Guineas, but if he does well there, we'll see a Flemington for the Cox Plate. So, I think he's $17 there.
Speaker 7I think he's $17 for a good three-year-old this year in the Cox Plate.
Speaker 3Well, and he's, he's by Ace High, isn't he?
Speaker 2Yeah. He's a proper New Zealand bred, bred gallop.
Speaker 3He's a nice looking horse. Yeah.
Speaker 2Hey, we'll take a break. We'll come back and we'll wrap up the breakdown. Plenty of questions coming, um, on the Garrett's Horse and Hound text line as well.
Speaker 1Join the conversation. Text us on 0499 736 736. Live across Australia. This is Giddy Up. With Gareth Hall.
Speaker 2Welcome back to Giddy Up. This is the Monday Breakdown. Thanks to Woodside Park, the home of Celestial Legend. Brilliant in the Doncaster Mile at Group 1. Tough in the Randwick Guineas at Group 1 level. Lower River. Devastating winner of the Group 1 Dubai World Cup. The Son of Sire sensation into mischief. Arch, let's have a look at the race that had everyone talking anyway, especially Peter Moody. After the 1,200 metre mare's race, Point Barrow was successful. She was very, very good. Bridal Waltz. Betty Mellon thought she could do it. She, the, the, the surface was a little too hard for her. That's why he cuddled her and let her go when he did.
Speaker 3I mean, I said on the day, I thought he was a bit cute. Um, in fact, immediately post-race.
Speaker 2If you're watching us on racing.com, here's the vision.
Speaker 3Also between the four and the two, because you know, what happens is you're not building your advantage. You're letting a horse like Point Barrow sort of, uh, bridge that gap. You're not going to beat Point Barrow in a 10 foot, nothing against the winner. It was a fantastic win. Thought he could have let, um, Bridal Waltz probably roll a little bit more at that stage. And try and take advantage of your advantage. But cause she was good through the line too, but take on board what he said. But, um, I'd be in moods as camp. Let's put it that way. Point Barrow is well and truly back. However, Gator.
Speaker 7Yeah, she was terrific. Wasn't she? Um, she's a good mare. She's a ripper. Um, yeah, obviously we had to forgive the Moyer run given nothing ran on the Monaco Grand Prix race. Um, great stuff, but you know, back to the call field where she flies and she's well driven up the straight as well. So there's another good race. In her, um, and in Corona, every possible chance into third, I like to run a mystery love for the right way. Um, but I think the point on Bridal Waltz is, is really salient, not only just on the numbers, on the hashtag data, but her, her great strength is her will to win. So I think you get her to a top and then let her fight, you know, it would be my personal view for what that's worth.
Speaker 2Yeah. So both agree with Pete Moody, basically.
Speaker 7Oh, for this particular athlete. That's the way. So, uh, yeah, if she was a different horse, um, who, you know, was a speedy thing and, and needed to be cuddled, sure. But she, I don't think Bridal Waltz was that she's a, she going back and watch her Sangster run. She was under siege. He just keeps fighting. She's a ripper.
Speaker 2Horses to follow Gator.
Speaker 7Well, I quite liked, um, again, right race, right? Mystery love out of that race because I don't think she's ever going to beat them, but, um, she was really good, uh, in that race. I think she knocked in for a terrific prep. Um, and obviously blind race, you know, the runs and George, those sort of horses, uh, easy to like.
Speaker 2Yeah. What about you?
Speaker 3Um, look, I, as I mentioned to your sepals, I backed sepals to win. I'm going to keep it simple. I'm just giving you one. That's all we need. And we're on and you're, you're in form at the moment. Your team's in the grand font. I saw you wearing the cap the other day. A hundred percent. I'll be wearing it away all year. And now you're getting, getting it out.
Speaker 2So I'll be putting it, I'll be getting out the track suit as well. I've got the full ready to go later on the week. I'm lucky. Neil gets off. Hot. Surely. Wow. How can you see that vision? Was it from an iPhone about a kilometer away? Like, uh, it's a good one. I figure it's, uh, what is, what about your take on that gator?
Speaker 7Well, I mean, there's a precedent with a good bike tax, isn't there? Yeah. A hundred percent. Easy. You know, well, yeah.
Speaker 3Gareth would have no hope.
Speaker 7But add an extra week for horse.
Speaker 2Anyway, we'll get some text messages. Without doubt, the performance of the weekend has to go to the aptly named blind race. The A-side Garnie had to work early to get outside the league. When the swoopers launched their attack a long way from home, it looked like the pressure was really on, but horse and she never panicked. Once blind race balanced up, found another gear and absolutely smashed that field. Um, a lot of thoughts there, Gareth. No one thought to check the plug. Seriously, always a circus. Punters are over it. Um, be interesting to get the review back. Uh, I might get you on when the review comes in, Hutch. Yeah. Why don't they have a track gallop at 8am on race day morning? Just one to two, three, one, two, three horses. And try and get it, um, most predicted use lanes. Well, they do that at different tracks when there is a training facility there. You see it a lot.
Speaker 3You know what's amazing about all this? We keep talking about having a track walker as well. Like how has this not picked up until that time, apart from anything else?
Speaker 2Yeah. Um, Lady Shenandoah had her time in the sun early in her career when Walla knew he had autumn glow in the wings. She's a good man, Lady Shenandoah, but she has reached her limits. Um, who's your tip in the Melbourne Cup, lads? Well, you've already given. You've given yours out haven't you, defiantly.
Speaker 3I just looked up it's, it's, I think it's co-favorite now. Yeah.
Speaker 2Who rides? I wonder who rides that horse. Was it Dylan Brownman? Yeah, but he's got a few options there. Um, he might be a good lead. A live another day just wins the Manicato. How do you think this track will play now? A few questions for the rails out 13 meters, Hutch.
Speaker 3Look, it's hard enough on the day. You want to ask me.
Speaker 2You usually, you can type into the computer and all your data comes up with all of the 30 meter rails out there.
Speaker 3Post plugs.
Speaker 2How will. This track play. I could surround go to be the champion stakes off the call for your cup and not the Melbourne cup. That's from Michael. I think the Melbourne cup is the main aim. Asterix is in great form has to be a live chance in the cups. Gator.
Speaker 7I like him. I think it was a crazy price on Saturday and, um, he ran a great race. He just no match for the corner. I, but he had 58 and a half.
Speaker 2Efferage Adam Blinkos selection is over, um, is over the line in the call field cup, Gareth 54. And he's back, um, to my, uh, that to my eye, the naturalism looked like a field of forces, all hitting the line. Well, towards a cup rather than a query of being a bunch finish. There you go. Um, my highlight of the week, Gareth was Christmas winning the four mile steeplechase, uh, part owned by Rick McIntosh. Great effort by Paul Prusk over in New Zealand. So well, not everybody involved there.
Speaker 3Also had a good little run of light.
Speaker 2She's alibi. Who's going to take her on in the mind. Power. That was interesting for moods. Wasn't it? 2000 and three weeks later. Back. Two, the 1500 meters.
Speaker 3Yeah. Well, when you say who's going to take her on it, uh, hopefully plenty, cause we want to see racing, don't we? I mean, uh, you don't want to see everything broken up as often the case.
Speaker 2Well, moods has got faith in the call field track. Then if he's taking, she's alibi there on the open day, take her anywhere. Wouldn't be good on your boys. Thanks. Gator. Great work. Bye. Thanks. Archie.
Speaker 3Cheers, man.
Speaker 2Joe pride to join me next year on giddy up.
Speaker 1Join the conversation. Text it. on 0499 736 736. Live across Australia, this is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 2Welcome back to Giddy Up, Gareth Hall with you. It's right on nine o'clock. Plenty of text messages coming through on the Gareth's Horse and Hound text line. I'll get to them in just a moment. Busy second hour coming your way. Joe Pryde will join me and then we'll break down, of course, that meeting at Randwick with Mickey Gannon and then the means test just after 9.30. Thoughts on I hope he wins, wins the cup very good the other day. I reckon she'll be primed for the Caulfield Cup, I hope he wins. A live another day just wins the Manicato. What that? How in God's name does he beat Bivouac? It's going to be an interesting Manicato now. If the track is a good three, a live another day will be scratched. Why was Marzu able to get away with the sectionals that he did? That's a very good question. We'll ask Joe Pryde that. Good morning, Gareth. I think the highlight, we mentioned that about Christmas. Ben Mellon's right. The ride on Bridal Waltz was perfect. Any criticism on a ride like that is completely wrong. Hello, Gareth. Loved the show. I recently relocated to Canada and listened to it daily. I appreciate that. I'm interested in Gator's thoughts on Ben Mellon's ride on Bridal Waltz. Ben gave Angel Capital and Birdman 10 out of 10 rides. However, it looked like he was caught napping on Bridal Waltz. Winner had momentum. Well, Danny Gator and Hutchie just pointed out that they thought that maybe they, well, they agreed with Moods. Maybe Benny Mellon did ride her a little cute. But as Ben pointed out, he thought she's better with a bit of give in the ground. And he was looking after her and thought that even if he did let her go, she wouldn't find as much as everyone thinks that she would have. So those were interesting comments by Benny. It's a minute past nine. Just before we get to Joe Pryde, I don't know what you think about this. I want to get your feedback on it. This is just an idea. 0-4-double-9-7-3-6. 7-3-6 on the Garrett's Horse and Hound text line. You can text in your thoughts here. So on Sunday, you're going to have a fee and stakes. And at best, there might be five horses engaged in this year's fee and stakes. That's at best. Now, if it's a good three, Mr. Brightside won't be running. So if he turns up to the call for your races and they upgrade the track and it's a good three, they'll scratch him. So if there's only four or five that will accept for the fee and stakes, why doesn't the MRC and the VR and the racers, Racing Victoria, get together and say, we'll race the fee and stakes the first or the second race. And then we'll use it as a marketing tool, the two warriors going at each other once again, pride of Jenny, Mr. Brightside. So it guarantees that Mr. Brightside will compete there on fee and stakes day and Manicato stakes day at Caulfield if the fee and stakes is an earlier race, say race one or two. Because he will go around at Caulfield if it's a good four, but they won't run him if it's a good three. So if you're an administrator and if you're a racing fan, do you want that? And if you're an administrator, would you listen to the fans and say, okay, then let's make sure it happens. Let's make sure we say Mr. Mr. Brightside take on pride of Jenny on a good four track in the early part of the meeting there at Caulfield. So as a racing fan, would you like that to happen to be guaranteed to have a race like that? Let me know. Oh, four double nine, seven, three, six, seven, three, six. That's oh, four double nine, seven, three, six, seven, three, six on the garage. So how, on the text line for me, it's a no brainer. Make it the first or second race. It's a perfect race to market. When you get the two stars competing against each other, once again, bright side and pride of Jenny, and we can go out to Caulfield and see those two champs in action. It's three minutes past nine. What about this from Marzu, the old boy that was successful, of course, in the shorts on Saturday.
Speaker 8Now, keep raising an effort, going after Marzu, then King secret, spicy martini, jolly star and headwall. It's starting. To unwind Ninja right down the outside. Marzu still shows the way. King secret coming through the middle. It's Marzu taking out the shorts. Marzu by a half length by the King secret or jolly star.
Speaker 2Yeah, you got to love him Marzu. I think that you could hear it in Darren Flindell's voice there in that call there. Like Marzu, he does it again. He causes the surprise to win a race like that. And he's trying to joins us now, Joe Pride. Congratulations, Joe. Did he surprise you there on Saturday?
Speaker 9Yeah, I guess he did. Um, it wasn't, it was, he found it hard to hide the surprise there Darren. A little comical, little laugh at the, at the end of the call. Um, and I don't think anyone but Gadges has sourced the win. He's been a, um, he's been there abouts in these sort of races for quite some time now. That was just nice to see him. Nice to see him snare one. so there was a lot said after the race, about how easy a time you had it. And I was looking through those sexuals this morning. It was 10, three, 10, four, 10, five. Like he's still going pretty quick.
Speaker 6Yeah.
Speaker 9But he's ran low one out of two and change. They don't get too much quicker. And it would have been a brave jockey that came out of the pack to take him on at some point because they'll be, they'll be bringing themselves undone. And, uh, he just had his little, his little birthday there on Saturday, which was great.
Speaker 2He's just a fascinating horse, Joe. Like I, and I said this to you last time I had a chat to you. I think Gosford was the race club that did a wonderful interview with you that he has to go to Gosford to trial because he doesn't go out to the, to the start, to the other racetracks. Cause he's too small. He's smart in a way. He's just, he likes to play games. So you got to play games with him. Um, he might,
Speaker 9he might, he might finish off his career down your way. I'd say, because I think that's probably about all I'd have left once he finally says no to Sydney racing would be because he's, I think there's still miles in his legs. He's, um, he's a sound old horse and mentally he, he genuinely wants to do it. Um, I think the pre-race stuff is just another, another world for him. I don't know what he's going on his head with that stuff.
Speaker 6Um,
Speaker 9because, he actually enjoys being in work and everything else, but, um, yeah, I would have thought Melbourne's more opportunity for him because there's a new set of tracks, which he doesn't know. I'm taking a little while to work them all out. So,
Speaker 2so what do you do with him now?
Speaker 9Uh, go to the premier. Um, yeah, he's, he's sort of gone through these races the last few seasons and, and done really well, you know, I mean, there was one year there, I think it was, it was before I, I, I was training Peter Snowden and he didn't win a race in the spring and he won, he managed to win, um, I think a couple, two or 3 million, dollars in bonuses with a sports bet series. Um, credible horse and amount of prize money he's been able to earn. Um, but, um, yeah, he's a lot of fun. He's a good character to have around.
Speaker 2Do you go to the Everest or you think a Sydney stakes would be a better option? Oh, look, I think so.
Speaker 9I mean, he's been in a few Everest, he's had his chance to, to go there. The only thing that would make him competitive in an Everest, I would have thought would be a really wet track. And that might, uh, that might bring, uh, bring and done a few, uh, including the Hong Kong horse, but who knows? He, he looks like he can, he can do anything. So probably wouldn't even stop him.
Speaker 2Yeah. Um, it is going to be interesting to see what happens. I reckon, um, with the Everest and how they go about the negotiations and all that there. So, um, yeah. And who's going to actually turn up to take on carrying rising. So there's a lot to play out there. Char Wolf was excellent, mate. It was superb.
Speaker 9Yeah. No, really, really happy with him. He's, um, it's been a shame. We've had to start this preparation with three runs on, on firm tracks, but, um, the best version of him clearly comes when he gets a bit of sting out and, um, and a bit of tempo set about Chad's ride there on Saturday. I thought he just showed a little bit of an issue. I wish sort of Nash had sort of gone a bit earlier.
Speaker 6Yeah.
Speaker 9Um, and I'm saying that they bring the mare undone, but that first hours was, was pretty easy for her. Um, I'm not sure that she might've just broken the minute and then just a dash home, which, you know, we've seen in the past doesn't suit my horse, but I thought he ran really well.
Speaker 2Can you beat the great mare? You know, can, Charles with blinkers on.
Speaker 9Yeah. Yeah. It probably needs the sting out as well, but, um, we certainly can, you know, and it's not me, you know, making some big statement. Yeah. We're going to roll her. It's, it's, I'm not, I think that's the best version of this horse is as good as any horse getting around. And I'm, I don't think I need to duck and dive away from opposition with him when he's, when he's in that, um, in that good form. So, uh, yeah, two things. I was three things. I'd love to see a bit of pressure in the race, a bit of a wet track and we'll, we'll guarantee that he will definitely have the blinkers on. Yeah.
Speaker 2Um, and if he does run well there, would you back him up in a Cox plate?
Speaker 9Possibly, but then I've also got the other two options in Melbourne within the mile and in the 2000 on champions day. So, um, plenty to play out, but, uh, and, uh, you know, if I don't think it looks suitable for you here, I can see there's going to be a wet track for the Cox plate. We might, we might go around the King Charles altogether. So I'm honestly the most important thing for, for me isn't, I took him to the race of Saturday to work out whether he was, he could be competitive with that now. I'm convinced he can now, but the most important thing for him is just to get him on some soft tracks.
Speaker 2Yeah. Soft tracks. And I guess he's a real grand final horse because he, he's guaranteed tempo in a way in these, these, these grand final races. Well, you would hope so anyway.
Speaker 9Yeah. Yeah. You'd be pretty surprised that the King Charles was a field of four or five. You know, it's just, well, you'd be very disappointed if it was, uh, um, yeah, like hoping, hoping there's, um, a horse in there to make a bit of a genuine contest out of it and, you know, made the best horse win.
Speaker 2Talking about blinkers, Attica 51 and a half on his back and an Epson. Um, he's going to be hard to beat, isn't he now?
Speaker 9Yeah. You look, I think he's, he's clearly the white horse of the race, uh, where he, where he lacks his race craft. And I'm hoping that the, the blinkers will give him that last little, um, bit he needs. Um, So he's still alive. they're pretty lightly raced. Going to give him a pretty solid hair in the trial tomorrow and with the blinkers on and we'll use that as our guide as to whether we use them on race day. I don't know that they're, like as a colt, he couldn't race without them. As a gelding, he clearly has got a little more race sense about him now and he's working things out, but they just may add something more to him and we'll find out tomorrow what will be a pretty serious trial because I've got Weeping Woman in it. She can run along a little bit and it'll be a contest where he's at a decent tempo. We'll get to see how well he settles and how well he finishes off.
Speaker 2It was a good day for your team. Were you happy with Headley Grange and also King's Secret who were both placed in their respective races?
Speaker 9Yeah, I thought they went terrific. King's Secret's probably next run and the run after. We peaked runs for him. Headley Grange was great. Unsuitable sort of tempo for him. Very hard ground, which again, probably not ideal for him, but I thought the team went. Really well on Saturday. We only sort of got the one gold medal, but four bronzes as well, so we'll settle for that.
Speaker 2Who rides out of Kieran the Epsom?
Speaker 9Kieran McEvoy.
Speaker 2Yeah. I knew you had a jockey book. I just couldn't remember who it was. Always a pleasure, Joe. Any winners for us this week?
Speaker 9What have we got this week?
Speaker 2Something for us battlers.
Speaker 9Maluku will be hard to beat on Wednesday at Warwick Farm.
Speaker 2Race five over the 1,200 metres. That'll do us nicely. Should you have got that protest there with taxation? Is that yours? Yeah.
Speaker 9Yeah, for sure.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 9I was convinced I would have. They tell me that it wasn't to do with the margin, but I feel like they thought it was. But anyway, I just defied them to tell me that she wasn't going straight past that horse when she ran up to it. She had time to get past it and I think she would have won by half a length, maybe a length. Yeah, look, they don't get them all right, and it's not to say that I'm right in this instance, but I didn't bother working. I don't like social media because I know how social media feels about $1.40 pops. There would be some very biased comments in there, but honestly, just watching it through the lens of, you know, I've watched plenty of races in my time, I thought she should have won.
Speaker 2Do you get an explanation there from the hierarchy, the people in charge, why that protest wasn't upheld?
Speaker 9No, look, I didn't ask one. I did ask if it was close, and they said it certainly was, but look, at the end of the day, can you give explanations for those things? It comes down to an opinion, doesn't it? Yeah, it does.
Speaker 2Yeah. And that's why, and everyone, like, this is why we love this game. It's all based on opinions, even from the stewards, really. Yeah. Handicappers based on opinion, like how much white horses get or how many points they get after victories, and yeah, it is what it is. We know it. Yeah, it was an interesting protest, I thought, anyway. It gave us something to talk about on a Wednesday afternoon, Joe.
Speaker 6That's it, exactly.
Speaker 2Well, thanks for your time, mate. Looking forward to saying, I think Charles Wolfe especially, like, I think that the King Charles needed Charles Wolfe to do what he's been able to do, this preparation, and you to talk him up and have that belief that you can take on Autumn Glow, because it looks like now that, yeah, it's going to be a really good race.
Speaker 10Do you think Pride of Virginia will come up?
Speaker 2No, she definitely won't come up, unfortunately. Definitely won't. No, no. So she goes, the plan for her all along has been the fiend stakes, and she might only have two or three against her, and then the empire rose. I think they desperately want to win an empire rose with her. My understanding was that they didn't want to go to a King Charles, because it's only a week back up then into the empire rose. I think they would love to find another race for her in between the fiend and also the empire rose, but they just got to work out what race that would be unless they just give her another trial. But she can't win it. I don't think she could win a... A King Charles against... Yeah, but she can help me, yeah. Yeah, 100%, yeah. Isn't that important? Maybe you can give Tony Ottobre a call, see what he has to say. No worries at all. Good on you, Joe. Thank you. See you, mate. There's Joe Pride there. 14 minutes past nine. Mick Gannon to join me next.
Speaker 1Join the conversation. Text us on 04009736736. Live across Australia. This is Giddy Up. Giddy Up with Gareth Hall. It's now time for the Monday Breakdown with Mick Gannon.
Speaker 2Time for the Monday Breakdown for, of course, Sydney Racing at Randwick on Saturday. Thanks to Woodside Park, the home of Celestial Legend. Brewing in the Doncaster Mile at Group 1 level. Tough in the Randwick Guineas at Group 1 level. And Lowell River, a devastating winner of the Group 1 Dubai World Cup and the Son of Sire sensation, into mischief. Mickie Gannon, hello to you. Morning to you, G. How do you think that track played at Randwick? How do you think that track played at Randwick on Saturday?
Speaker 11Yeah, a little bit disappointing for the punters, really. You really have to be sort of top four and run. So, yeah, on speed, horses, back towards the rail was a significant advantage. We thought it would be some advantage, but probably not as brazen as that, G. Some tempos played their part. You know, you can speak about the shorts and, you know, they just gave that race to Marzou. And well done. I think someone texted me during the week about that horse suggesting it wasn't a chance. We probably took it on. Mahuna was in the race at that stage. Obviously, Mahuna come. He comes out and the speed map changes a lot, but full credit to that punter. And, yeah, disappointing, G, for a big day race. But what do you do? It's got to go back to the true at some stage. So, it is what it is.
Speaker 2Yeah. And we've seen a few upset results in these lead-up races to the Everest before. I remember Hawksy's horse that never won a race after it. What was its name? Won it about 50 to 1. It'll come to me in just a moment. Yeah, Rupert Lee colours. Yeah, Rupert Lee colours. Hasn't got close since. But from an Everest. I think Wayne might have tipped it that day as well. Yeah, I'll work it all out shortly. Jolly Star, what did you make of her?
Speaker 11Yeah, she was really good, G. She had drawn a gate and had been in a better position or if they had a bit of speed in the race and I think she just wins the race. So, you know, she's come home in lanes that you couldn't win in. So, yeah, I thought she was more than a pass mark and she's well and truly on track for an Everest.
Speaker 2Spicy Martini, King's Secret, third and fourth.
Speaker 11Yeah, Spicy Martini probably had. A bit more favours than King's Secret and Jolly Star, but I thought she was still good. She's probably gone to a new career peak there. So, she'll continue to improve and she'll improve significantly out in trip in a high-pressure race, I'd imagine, Spicy Martini. So, I think she's on track for an Everest. King's Secret wasn't too bad in behind there as well. Ninja was really good. I know a lot of people wanted a pot Ninja, but what do you do from there? It was on the cards. We knew it was going to happen. So, his run was good off a slow tempo, back wide, running down in the lanes where no horses were winning or even let alone winning, placing in across the day. So, complete forgive, drop Ninja. It's exactly what you'd expect, Gareth. You know, he spoke about it 42 days. I thought Headwall was disappointing for us because obviously we needed him to run top four, but yeah, I thought of a slow tempo. I'm surprised I just didn't cuddle up and stay back towards the inside, given the pattern of the day. Sort of went back wide and then you sort of went back and wide and raced against horses that might have more talent than you being. Jolly Star and Ninja in the inferior going. So, I would have thought you would have probably taken more of the inside lane and rolled the dice a little bit more for Headwall, but you know, he's what it is. And look, potentially a little bit flat second up. You know, Dino sort of pushed towards that. I don't think that is the case. I think just racing the inferior going with the speed and tempo against.
Speaker 2I'll never forgive Headwall. He robbed me of my greatest ever moment, really, going to the last leg of our weekend preview top four multi. With Angel Capital, all the hates and criticism I got were going with going with that horse. Um, anyone, um, but anyway, well done Gareth.
Speaker 11And I'll take, I'll take all for responsibility for that because you did your job.
Speaker 2I can't believe you haven't dyed your hair yet. If I had to dye my hair, why haven't you dyed yours?
Speaker 11That's a good point you make Gareth. Um, look, I'll consider it. I'll go to the selectors and see what they've got to say.
Speaker 2Joker's Grin is another big talking point out of this race. He just didn't turn up. Obviously he had. An interesting week as well. So, um, yeah, it'd be interesting to see what Waller does with him. Yeah.
Speaker 11Completely forgive. I tried to allude to a little bit without sort of making a big deal of it. And obviously the horse is fine, but you are going to miss work. You would have missed the Gallop at some stage. You know, it is, it is what it is. There's no problem. He is, he's a good horse. Just forgive it. And we just move on. We, we kind of knew what we're getting ourselves into, but the SP is, you know, it started at $8.50, so I find that hard to work out, but anyway.
Speaker 2Um. Let's have a look at the other feature race there, which was the seven sunrise States over the 1600 meters. We'll replay the performance of autumn glow. It was two good failure and char Wolf. Unfortunately, our mega boost tours, and I need to take responsibility for this, um, with Gringotts who was beaten two links. He wasn't far off then, but he finished fifth at the end of the day.
Speaker 8So they're trying to get into the race. Autumn glow is a narrow leader from jail. We're trying to sustain the run on the outside and it's game on green gotses, but fighting on strongly autumn glow. She's lifting from green got chair. Wolf is trying to sustain the run, but autumn glow gets two lengths in front. They try to attack her on the turn and she's going to blow them away. I only on a charge time in a second.
Speaker 2So autumn glow. Very good. Aliana, what did you make of her there? Mickey Gannon.
Speaker 11Yeah, she was great. So, um, one of the doubters, uh, we thought she'd be fine and she's fine. She's on track for Cox plate. I think she'd be. very, very hard to beat and we've said it all along. she'll you know think she'll win a cox play hopefully go to melbourne cup gareth i don't think the 58 is that big a deal so uh let's just hope that chris um pushes forward there you know she's a five-year-old man now and she you know so i think sometimes you've got to roll the dice with a little bit but i think she'll still be really really competitive in a melbourne cup yeah but she was great her her work across the line what 16 meters um second up her work was fantastic they went slow so the race shape didn't suit her at all like they properly walked here um for this level of race uh i'm shocked gee that nash wasn't more positive on gringotts early i understand you know watching it i understand it was a pretty good spectacle to be fair until autumn glow proved too strong but i understand the thinking but i would have thought that they would have probably tried to stretch out a bit more char will fantastic on track and art of flyer again not suited slow tempo so you know this this will be a proper form race yeah eliana 58 it
Speaker 2was interesting listening to chris waller yes done correct weight um and the decision that he'll have to make whether he wants to send her around with 58 on her back i think we all know that the weights have been raised and um like i think she's got to carry a half a kilo more than what very elegant did when she won the melbourne cup when you analyze the weights and obviously you take in consideration um the raising weights there that go up a kilo but i think chris waller's worried his concern is um in fact i'll play the grab that what chris waller said to the boys there yesterday on the correct way when he had a chat to to nick and
Speaker 12travis noonan i couldn't believe she got 58 in the melbourne cup um i'm not whinging but holy heck it makes it hard um for a horse like elliott to win a melbourne cup with 58 she's a mirror like that's that's equivalent to 60 for a for a culture of gilding like yeah she's a good horse but she's won a derby a ranvier and a tankard um but she's got five and a half years of experience in that um and she's got 58 or a 60 equivalent for a male um but kai be diva a pretty good horse she won her third melbourne cup of 58 and a half and poor old eliana i don't like i just can't get
Speaker 13my head around it to tell you the truth yeah it is interesting isn't it with the new landscape with the 59 kilogram top weight required in the melbourne cup is this something that you're not necessarily in agreeance with the way the rules are now sort of situated for the handicapping
Speaker 12look i've got multiple horses so it's gonna it's not good it's it's um it's not gonna affect me but i think the owners of eliana deserve a chance to be running in a melbourne cup like the horses before her uh with a fair weight so um i don't know i don't know it's um i don't know where we're getting as simple as that and i'm not whinging but um i'm just saying eliana like she can't win a melbourne cup 58 can she well
Speaker 13i don't know i wouldn't put it past her in terms of what we saw in the tanker it'd be a great challenge as a racing fan i'd love to see her try and do it but see that's yeah no i get
Speaker 12what you're saying but we're going to patch them up after the race and uh it breaks their heart it's a tough race so yeah it's an interesting one and uh i don't want to cause a debate or or um get get political at all but all i'm saying is i'm not very happy with elliana's got 58. yeah so that's chris waller talking to the noonan boys
Speaker 2i think that the point that i took out of all that is that it's the 58 that he's worried about her carrying around flemington over the two miles um and whether that will break her heart or not and whether he could get it back after that for another preparation or two so i think that's the decision he'll talk to denise martin about way up um so yeah um she's 15 for the melbourne cup and um it'll be it'll be interesting to see when he does make his decision there like i know you're james mcdonald's been booked to ride eliana but um he'd be getting a few options i would imagine outside of her if chris waller decides to go the other way so it's going to be interesting to see
Speaker 11how that all plays out there mickey gannon yeah it's probably there's two questions right one is what's the best for the horse and and her moving forward and being you know competitive in future cox blades and and other races towards the back end of the carnival and then obviously autumn carnival as well versus can she win a melbourne cup with 58 i think she can win a melbourne cup but you know chris has obviously got other things in mind other than just winning a melbourne cup and he has other horses so i understand both sides of it but yes i think she could win yeah
Speaker 2and i think that's the season or the year we're in with the melbourne cup when she nominated she's a proven weight for age group one winner so she had to be weighted that when um with the with the the way that the the nominations were played out for david hagen the chief handicapper so half yours is the top weight but um her record's a little bit better than half yours even though he's won a call for what price is she for a cox plate she's third favorite behind birdman around seven dollars okay i think she'll win a cox plate all right then if she wins a cox plate i don't think they'll go to the melbourne cup they'll go to the champion stakes i reckon
Speaker 11okay um well if she doesn't win a cox plate they probably wouldn't go to a melbourne cup either
Speaker 2would they well if she finishes a third in a cox plate like they did it with very elegant yeah they went to the melbourne cup because they think well we can't beat them wait for age two thousand meters at flemington um why would you go to a champion state we might have a crack at a melbourne cup but if she does it easily they think well why not go to a champion states and try and win the cox plate the year after so yeah sure yeah it's an interesting it's an interesting debate to have um char wolf the blinkers go on a soft track could he beat autumn glow like joe thinks he might be
Speaker 11able to yeah yep certainly can needs the right setup but yeah a few more horses in the race speed blinkers on a bit of bit of cut out of the ground soft six would be enough i think this is
Speaker 2when we start to back char wolf forth up and beyond um and it'd be interesting to see the makeup of the king charles this year as well because as as as joe pride pointed out there he would love pride of jenny to be involved in the in in the king charles but i don't think that would be happening um you've
Speaker 11tried to push into a fan for four weeks so yeah you know joe was surprised this morning but you know if he's got to listen jenny you know he's got to listen jenny i think he's got to listen jenny you goes to a fee and gee whiz be hard to be yeah but five horses again that's a disappointing sort
Speaker 2of setup there isn't it the t-row stakes um bangkok hottie um she was too tough for her rivals once again striking alibi did find a bit of trouble global gold third who who's the horse you want to
Speaker 11be taking out of that race well you've done it again with bangkok hottie well done full credit but striking alibi should have won the race just to start it this is truck interference at the start yeah please mate if you go back and watch the replay uh crossed herself the race in the first 50 meters so interference at the start and went backwards there held any sort of position striking alibi clearly wins the race global goal was pretty good but bangkok hottie got the job done again and all you can do is win these races gareth and and she did and she was good she was strong and gee i'm glad that they listened and went more forward because the talk during the week was all going to go back and it would she wouldn't have won the race from back i can't believe just give me some
Speaker 2credit if i beat you there mickey i'm only joking anyway didn't i didn't i just say well you're a fadees can it win it won the kingston town could it win a caulfield cup
Speaker 11um it's a good question no i'm gonna go with no but just just purely because of the way that the the tracks played there and and how advantageous it was on the day i thought like if you want to compare runs solo spain was enormous given the way it all sort of played out but it was there is merit in the time and the speed that this horse runs so ran so um yeah those top three i think you could add some credit too i think travolta as well you get a bit of credit but
Speaker 2that's travolta isn't it so um the short answer no other highlights there from saturday's race meeting baron gary's become a really good story off the track and he found a way to win again in
Speaker 11the midway yeah exceptional and what a winner was so three wide no cover the entire and got the job done so that's what you like to see um on a day where it was just completely unsuited to do so so um we will follow him we followed him first up we followed him here again didn't get much of a price in the end the sp to dollar 65 but um good good good to get one winner on the day anyway uh
Speaker 2nine agent in the 1400 meter race went from a four dollar forty chance to a dollar eighty after a couple of hundred meters when mcdonald landed outside the leader
Speaker 11just too good just too good and and even he's right on the collegiate boulevard was exceptional as well gareth so um to get her where she was she's gone enormous she'll go to a big dance i believe that's where she'll be aimed at as i'm not sure if there's any markets if she's in the market there but i'm just surprised if she gets beat in that race she's absolutely airborne night agent a great ride to land where um he did there unleashing was good in that race so we can follow unleashing uh for sure just needs a steer what about horses to follow mate yeah unleashing uh so throw unleashing in there i thought heather grange was great you can't possibly win at that tempo so that's how much you can do with that i thought linebacker was really good as well as a few horses from back on in that field out of genuine excuses in the race there from race five uh we've touched on uh most of these other ones obviously striking alibi uh for sure global goal stays there and we're going to follow every horse out of the seven stakes and i think yeah it's tough to sort of suggest we follow many out of the shorts because you know they're all going to go up against kane rising so that makes it tough from a betting perspective those are
Speaker 2right then it does it does with kane rising like he's just got to rock up he's just got to rock up and um be interesting to see what price he does start um just one quick question Atherwolf, after winning that race at Newcastle, your thoughts there in the Newcastle Cup? Could he be competitive in a Melbourne Cup?
Speaker 11Well, we haven't seen his ceiling, have we? So we want to see him fully tested. So at this stage, yeah, the short answer is yes, he can be. Do you know what weight he's got?
Speaker 2I'll have to double-check that. It's 51 or something, I think, yeah.
Speaker 11Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, absolutely can be competitive. Just continues to improve, right? So, look, he might have come all too early for him. A four-year-old, he only had about six or seven race starts. But, yeah, he could be competitive, G, for sure.
Speaker 2All right, mate. Thanks for that, Mickey Gannon. We appreciate your time, as always.
Speaker 11Well done, G. Good weekend for you. The Lions, of course. And then you've got Angel Capital Home and Bangkok Hottie. Wow, mate.
Speaker 2Wow, what a rare weekend. Good on you, Mickey G. See you, mate. That was the breakdown of Randwick-Tinks of Woodside Park, the home of Celestial Legend. Brilliant, the Doncaster-Molar Group. One tough in the Randwick Guineas. And Laurel River, devastating winner of the Group One Dubai World Cup, the son of Sire Sensation, into mischief. We're going to take a break. We're going to break down just quickly the meeting on the Gold Coast and also at Morpheville and then the means test. They're ready to go and there's plenty to discuss with the means test team this morning. Johnny O'Neill and Wayne Hawks will be joining me with that segment in about 10 or so minutes.

Speaker 2Welcome back to Giddy Up. Let's break down that meeting in Adelaide at Morpheville on the weekend and Heath Pope joins us. G'day, Popey.
Speaker 14Good morning, Gareth.
Speaker 2I trust you well. Yeah, I am well, mate. How are you going?
Speaker 14Good, mate, good.
Speaker 2What did you make of that meeting in Adelaide Horses that we need to be following?
Speaker 14Yeah, mate, the track was playing. Playing on pace. Inside barrier is also an advantage. I think it was seven of the nine runners drew barrier seven or less on paces, so basically looking for runners going forward that race best against the race shape. Race one, now, it was basically the first two here, the two Victorian visitors, Chicago Blues and Miss Mahjong. That was the shining light runner of the race, mate. Arguably, they both settled back off a slow tempo. Miss Mahjong especially found trouble, really hit the line late. That is your black booker from race one.
Speaker 2Yep.
Speaker 14I think Bilk, race two, the maiden race, Bilk, this horse is very close to a win. It does show pace in its races as well. Tempo in this was actually quite solid, so I think it actually did well to hold on for second, so race two, Bilk, is your black booker. Now, let's go race three. I think I did label one here. I thought teardrop rotation was a good one at odds on Saturday, and it ran a decent race. I think it's got a race in it soon. It wasn't far away. It was a bit over a length away, had every chance. Now, the winner of... Tennessee Spirit, the Victorian visitor, race four, that's a horse that, if it comes back over here again, it had everything go against it. It was just simply too classy for them. Now, I was on code name, had zero luck. This is a runner where I'm hoping it'll just, in my opinion, this does have a race in it. Had no luck, and let's just hope the market overreacts next time.
Speaker 6Okay.
Speaker 14The winner of race seven, mate, I want to go to somewhere soon now. This horse did show promise last campaign, and it looks like it's come back a much better horse, and also it'll be better suited over a longer trip. The way it really hit the line, put them away, this is a horse that, I think it's got a number of wins in it this campaign. It could go through its grades. Okay. Yeah, the stable, they trained a double. Andrew Glewis and Jason Holder rode a double as well. What else have we got? I think that's about it, Gareth.
Speaker 2Yeah, and that's all we need. So what would be your bet? So somewhere soon, the horse that we desperately need to be following, you reckon, out of that meeting?
Speaker 14Absolutely, mate. Honestly, I think it's got the potential to go through the grades, and also clearly better over a longer trip too.
Speaker 2Yeah, well done too. You tipped us, of course, Graham Begg's, horse, Peloton, that was successful there on Saturday, and Angel Capital as well, Popey. So you had a fill-up there at Caulfield on the weekend.
Speaker 14Oh, mate, I had to follow you with Angel Capital, didn't I say?
Speaker 2We all followed Mark Hunter, I'd say, anyway. But, yeah, it was, yeah, so well done, Popey. Hopefully you made a little bit of money there. Paid for the anniversary.
Speaker 15Absolutely, oh, jeez. I need a more than that, do you?
Speaker 2Good on you, Popey. Thanks for your time, as always.
Speaker 15Thanks, Gareth. Good luck. Good luck, everyone. Thank you.
Speaker 2There's Head Pope there. Plenty of text messages on the Gareth's Horse and Hound text line. Lady Shenandoah had her time in the sun early on in her career when Walla knew he had Wardham Glow in the wings. There you go. Lady Shenandoah hasn't won an open company just yet. I wonder where her next win will be coming from. I reckon this might be her last season. Hi, Gareth. After Saturday's races, surely Birdman deserves to be shorter than Eliana in the Cox Plate. Well, he is with Bet365. He's the second favourite with Sir Delia Steele, the firm favourite there. Can you boys explain to me why Walla isn't considering Eliana for the Caulfield Cup? Her best performance was over the boys in a similar distance range. And if he's worried about breaking her in this year's Melbourne Cup, surely she runs in the Melbourne Cup as a five- or six-year-old. Well, she's five now. There's a lot of people that think that the Caulfield Cup would be a lovely race for her, but Chris Waller wants to win a Cox Plate with her. And he loves the Cox Plate. So if he goes to the... If he goes to the Caulfield Cup, I don't think he'd want to go to the Cox Plate with that quick back-up of a week and then dropping back and trip. So that's the reason why he doesn't want to go to the Caulfield Cup with her. Great idea about the Fee and Gareth. Like the 60s and 70s, some top races were early on in the day. I said this just before, and we'll discuss it with the means test team. Like, if there's only going to be four or five in a Fee and Stakes, and there's a strong possibility that we get an upgrade in the second half of the meeting to a good three, or even after a few races, and Mr. Brightside will only race on a good four, then why don't you make the Fee and Stakes race one or two? And then you can market it like, head to Caulfield to see these two champs, Pride of Jenny and Mr. Brightside go at it. And you guarantee that Brightside will be there on a good four track. That's what I would do if I was the MRC in Racing Victoria. Wondering, read Joseph's horses. How do you boys think that they will go with their build-up and the way that they will be prepared for this year's Melbourne Cup? Well, Joseph O'Brien's had experience in winning Melbourne Cups, especially he's had experience with getting the best out of his days at that facility at Werribee. There's horses that will need to have a run before the Melbourne Cup. There's horses like James J. Braddock and Trust Your Instinct and Highwayman that will go into the Melbourne Cup now without having another race after they finished off the European season. So, you know, he knows what he's doing, Joseph, and you can back him in. And that's why he's got so many horses ready to go for the Melbourne Cup because owners who, especially even Australian owners and international owners that want to win a Melbourne Cup, they've identified Joseph as the man that's been able to do it. So he's got a lot of horses that have been given to him with the main aim being the Melbourne Cup and he could have five or six in it. It's 9.42. The means test isn't far away. We'll come back. We might try and find you some winners. It's the day before the means test with Bagger Tips on this Monday morning.

Speaker 10Hello, Gareth. Nice to hear your wonderful voice this morning.
Speaker 2We're on a good 4 at Warrnambool. It's been a while since I reckon we had a good 4 surface there in the western part of Victoria. The rail's out 9 metres, 8 races. We're going to kick off with your best bet coming up in the second race.
Speaker 10Yeah, I had to rub the eyes a few times when I saw the good 4. It refreshed, but no, stayed a good 4 and I think we're going to get a good 4. in a nice, firm racing surface. So, as you say, race number two, number eight prime pattern. is my best of the day. Second preparation, this horse had four runs through the first prep and ran really well in some nice enough two-year-old races and has form around blind race at the back end of that as well, which obviously reads really lovely now, returning three jump outs this time in. They've been slick, including the latest one. It was a really good 1,000 metres second to Parquet on hillside. Now, Parquet went to the races the other day and won really well on debut there. At Mornington, that horse looks to have genuine upside, speaking of the Freedman team as well. So, the form around that's good in the jump out. Comes here first up, Jason Warren trains. Note Jason Warren and the Hugs and Kisses, very prominent as two of the three owners of the horse and I know Jason, he loves money and he'll be trying to win this race first up, second prep for Prime Pattern. They do have to beat Tuscan Rose, who looks at debut on his trial up really well, but I am very firmly in the corner of Prime Pattern here on
Speaker 2return. He's produced a couple of horses of late Jason Warren that have been well supported and have bolted in, so that's a good push there. And then your next best comes up. It's our Boost horse, and it's in race seven.
Speaker 10Yeah, I like this. Another 1,400 metre event. Magnetic chest, deep into a preparation. It's been racing really well. It's only had the eight career starts, and five of them have been this prep. One of them, Mount Gambier Maiden returning, and then went straight to a 62 at Bendigo and won that as well. Put himself up in grade a little bit, but ran well at Sandown, Bendigo behind Electric Elvis, and then last time out at Geelong. The Blinkers replaced the Winkers, and that last time out at Geelong, that was behind Encanto Star. So Jimmy's brother, who they do believe goes pretty well, is really starting to put some form on the board. Magnetic chest, chased it out wide, and was just green a touch late. I feel like that horse could have finished much closer had it just had his mind on the job a little bit. So really happy to see the Blinkers replacing the Winkers here. Draws perfectly for Johnny Allen. Barrier three, and looks to be really hard to beat. I think jumps, races, handy and looks very, very well placed in a race that the other well, a couple of the other dangers are sort of stepping out of
Speaker 2Maiden Company. Yep, so that's race seven, number two. Your quaddie, first leg, six, seven, eleven. One, three, five, second leg, two, three, four, third leg and you come home with three, five, eight and nine in that final leg there, Sammy boy. Give us
Speaker 10strength today, my friend. Good track at
Speaker 2Warrnambool. Alright, then looking forward to watching you on racing.com this afternoon. Thanks, Sam. See you, mate. Luke Overness in at Grafton likes two horses. Race four, number three, Patriotic Intention and race six, number three, Wishful Thinker and at Narrow Mine, race five, number three, Nor Nor West and Inyan. Race seven, number ten. You can head to thetrots.com.au for expert harness racing tips and in-depth analysis for major Victorian meetings. Just the one best bet at Charlton for Darren Carroll. Let's race five, number two. Amanda Vilmer, race five, number two. And Glenn Moore likes three, Pinjarra. He likes race one, number seven, Just Like Flair. Race two, number eight, Pocket of Dreams and race three, number eight, High Stakes King. So race one, number seven, race two, number eight, race three, number eight. Time for a break. On the other side of it, it is the Monday Means Test with Johnny O'Neill and Wayne Hawks.
Speaker 1Australia. This is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall. The Monday Means Test with Wayne Hawks and John O'Neill. Time for the
Speaker 2Monday Means Test here on Giddy Up. Johnny O'Neill joins us. Hello, John. Morning, my friend. How are you? I am very well. There's plenty to discuss today. And Wayne Hawks, live from Sydney, is ready to go. Hello to you, Wayne.
Speaker 16Morning, Gareth. Morning, Johnny. How are we both? Yeah, pretty good, mate. Thanks. We've been sitting here waiting for you. We want to know what's going on.
Speaker 17Yeah. He's a busy man these days. Let me tell you, anyone in Sydney, just stay off the M4 between the M7 and Church Street. It's not much chop this morning, the traffic here in Sydney out west, but I'm here. I'm
Speaker 2here. It is. Like, we've had two-year-old trials already in Victoria, but there's the official two-year-old trials at Randwick today. It's a live broadcast on Thoroughbred Central. They're not as exciting as they used to be, I reckon,
Speaker 16Johnny, now. What, the two-year-old trials? Yeah. Oh, look, I think, for owners, it's great to get out and see what's going on. I think half the challenge is that most of the trainers only use them for education, so... Yeah. And then you generally see gay dominate and, you know, I mean, Chris Wallivary rarely wins any...
Speaker 2I think he's won the third trial today. Did he really? Well, he must be a good horse. He must be really good. Have you got any trialling today, Wayne?
Speaker 17No, no. Look, they were 20 years ago, it was the Mutsi event. The new first season sires out and everything, but, um, I just get appalled year after year after year when they're pulling the stick and they're riding them out like a race day. I mean, I don't understand it whatsoever. I mean, they're barrier trials, they're for education and that's what they're for, and my father always said, when you start putting a dollar value on a barrier trial, we'll concentrate on winning a few more, so if you've got the... if you're a stud and you've got the new stallion, you know, whatever the... I don't know, what is Animo? He's the hottest property in the country right now as far as the first season, um, two-year-olds go, well, you know, if Animo came out and went bang-bang and had a couple of really impressive winners this morning, Darley's or Godolphin's phone would be running hot because there'd be some people, I'm sure, booking in some more mares, so from that point of view, it's, uh, it's good, but I think it's 49 two-year-olds trying, which is not a bad number, to be fair, because I've said this many, many times, Gareth and John, that, uh, our early two-year-olds are becoming less and less and less, and I would be a massive advocate to say no two-year-old racing before Melbourne Cup week or, you know, even, even make it December. Magic Millions won't want that because it's going to stuff up their two-year-old race, but we're just, the two-year-old field sizes pre-Christmas are just getting smaller and smaller and smaller year on year because they're just not strong enough, these, uh, these two-year-old types, and you go and look at all these beautiful, big, expensive, especially colts, where are they? I mean, they're, they're, they're very, very hard to get, they're hard to find, and they're hard to get, they're really those big colts, and that's one guarantee I can give because I've had two many, unfortunately. Let's get stuck into
Speaker 2the King's Gambit, and I guess it's Caulfield on Saturday, there was controversy, controversy at the start when the rail was moved out four metres down the home straight from seven to eleven metres, and then we had two Group Ones, and I think the track played pretty well after that, um, when you had Angel Capital flashing down the centre of the track to win his first Group One, and then Buckaroo, well done to you, Johnny O'Neill. Birdman, Birdman. Oh, I shouldn't say Birdman, it was too good, of course. Thank you, my friend, but Buckaroo ran huge. Yeah, he was okay. Birdman takes out the Group One. How'd your horse go, the Perth horse? Ran well. He was second in the Underwood Stakes. First of all, what did you think about this rail at the start of the day that was moved from the seven to the eleven
Speaker 16metre mark? One thing I will say is maybe we should put more holes in the track more often. I thought the track played pretty well after about race three or four, so um, you know, look, it's an unfortunate situation for the Melbourne Racing Club. They addressed it pretty quickly, I thought they overcame the issue pretty quickly, and it was a great day's racing. So, um, an issue they overcame, so well done. We've got to take our hats off to them for that, and I'm sure they'll be doing plenty of work around trying to work out what was wrong. Wayne?
Speaker 17Yeah, pretty disappointing. Pretty ordinary effort by everyone, well, not everyone, but the people at Melbourne Racing Club, because after 7.30 on race day, you expect everything to be good and as good as you can have it. There was no rain impediment, there was no, you know, there was no, well, weather is probably the word I'm looking for, there's no, there was no weather to stuff up the track and to, you know, it might be fair that you say the race, the race track played pretty fair, but you know, you don't want group one days where the rail's at 11 metres, because there certainly were horses, and I spoke to you yesterday, Gareth, you know, my horse in race one, Melham said he just didn't get around that, the tight surface, and maybe he wouldn't have got around Caulfield anyway, but the further out you go, the worse it is, and we're probably just very lucky that, uh, someone picked it up an hour before the first, but on that, I have spoken to, and my father, we spoke to Race in Victoria, and they're actually going to put, they're actually going forward, they're going to put out something more, um, how would I say, official, because we didn't really get anything official. If a track goes from a five to a four, if it goes the other way, from a four to a six, we all get updates, and then we have the choice to scratch and everything like that, so going forward, what they're looking to implement is that after 7.30, if anything you know, not sinister, but if anything serious goes on with, uh, with race day, just call it that in general, they're going to put it out there officially, and then that way, all the participants will be able to be up to date with what's going on, because you've got owners ringing you, I was in Sydney, I wasn't there at Caulfield Saturday, and you've got owners ringing you, and you're going, mate, I've got no idea what's going on. All I know is that there's a stuff up, we all saw the pictures, um, that were going around, um, of the, um,
Speaker 2the plugs. I've got to take a break, I'll come back and we'll discuss more of this straight after, after 9.58. This is Giddy Up on this Monday morning, the Monday Means Test. It is great to have your company, Gareth Hall, Wayne Hawkes and Johnny O'Neill with you. You can join our conversation any time you want on the Gareth's Horse and Hound text line 0499 736 736. That number is 0499 736 736. More of the Means Test next year on Giddy Up.
Speaker 1Join the conversation. Text us on on 0-4-double-9-7-3-6 736. Live across Australia. This is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 2Welcome back to Giddy Up. This is the Monday Means Test. Gareth Hall, Wayne Hawks and Johnny O'Neill with you. So just going back to the conversation we just had, Johnny O'Neill. So obviously there'll be an independent or there'll be a review from the MRC. They'll report back to Racing Victoria because you can't have this situation happen again when you start off a race meeting and the rail goes from 7 to 11 metres. Now the MRC believe that the track was ready to go and then the jockeys a few of the jockeys told the stewards that they weren't quite happy when they walked the track and then the stewards who take control of the race meeting they become the bosses regarding what happens with the track as soon as they arrive on course and then they made the decision after talking to the jockeys that they have to move the rail out 11 metres. So there'll be a process that will unfold. Hopefully we'll get answers in the next couple of days and we stop this issue happening again.
Speaker 16So I think where we sit is you know there's a huge issue here and it's going to be addressed. We know that. It's been well discussed Gareth but clearly the challenge is from a Melbourne Racing perspective there's been some errors made but what do you do? What do you call the race meeting off? No. So what I'm saying is like I mean we all wanted to go to the races. We all wanted to enjoy Group One Racing. I'm reading a couple of text messages here and people are saying you know I'd be wrapping the Melbourne Racing Club today because you know I ran 1-2 in the Naturalism and Birdman won the Group One but ultimately you know that Caulfield track always plays forward. We know that. Always has. Always plays forward. Played as expected after that. Played as expected but having said that you know they addressed the issue as quickly as they could. I thought the stewards did a really good job. Melbourne Racing Club collectively came up with a solution. Have the these things happened before? I'm sure they have. Will they happen again? I'm sure they will. The challenge is we just need to make sure that we're putting all of the protocols in place so that they don't right? And if not if there is human error or if there is an issue come up with a solution so that we can race. So I think from their perspective they did everything they could possibly do. Seemed to be a pretty good day at the races. Weather was good. Everyone was up and about. So it seemed to be forgotten pretty quickly outside of the horses that didn't handle it and and you know. Did it stop you?
Speaker 2You're a punter. Did you punt? Yeah I did on Saturday. Yeah I did. Yeah. So the track didn't deter you? No. No it didn't. No. And Wayne you're saying that if there if there's something that's significant like the rail coming out that you should be allowed to scratch. Is that what you were saying just before?
Speaker 17Yep. Any participant. And look I'm sure if you went to where the stewards and said listen this is my case. I was only so so with the rail being seven. But moving the rail at four metres you don't think it's that much. It's one thing that most people have never ever done and they've never ever walked Caulfield. I guarantee that. So if you see how tight Caulfield is when the rails are in the true. You just move out. I spoke to one curator on Sunday. Not at Caulfield. But I said how much moving it out four metres is a massive difference. Massive difference. Four metres doesn't sound a lot. But when you're when you're going out there and you know there's not a lot of room and I saw a grab from racing.com. Kate Watts was asking some of the jockeys when they were coming back in after their races and a few of them come in and said gee it's tight out there. It's narrow and you know what I mean. So it's not what we want. Mistakes happen and I give Melbourne Racing Club one thing in the last 12-18 months. They have been very big at putting their hand up if things have gone wrong which is great number one because our industry is full of smokes. They don't think they've done anything wrong. Everyone loves ducking for carbo.
Speaker 2Wayne they have the review but they were ready to race with that rail there.
Speaker 17So. Well the track wasn't right though Gareth. So at the end of the day if you can pull out those plugs and the plugs never grab then the track wasn't right. Now I'm not saying that was the curator's fault one bit. I know he'd be listening and he'd be shuddering right now but the bottom line is the track was not right Gareth. It wasn't right because if it was right we wouldn't have had the divots that were pulled out and we wouldn't have moved the track. So let's not sugar coat this because if this happened to a jockey, a trainer, an owner any participant we'd be in a world of hurt right now with a massive please explain. So we need to we all make mistakes. I've made plenty today already like we all do but we need to learn from them and try to not make them again. So don't for one second tell me that oh the track was great and everything was good. No no no
Speaker 16I just want to add one thing in here though Mark Hunter sent a text message through who is an excellent form judge and obviously part of the team here and he's basically saying out of all the track walkers did anyone bring attention to the stewards or tell anybody about them?
Speaker 2That's not Mark Hunter. Well if that's
Speaker 16not Mark Hunter whoever it is but the point is okay so he's got Mark Hunter on the bottom of it and that's not it. No he said that Mark Hunter walked the track why didn't they? Okay so the point is like the track walkers and there's plenty of them right there's a lot if you go early in the morning a lot of the professional punters have guys that walk tracks all the way around Australia so did they not pick it up either? Well this is the situation where it's sort of like he
Speaker 2said she said like they thought the track was ready to go the jockeys were unhappy and the jockeys have the final say because they're competing on it if they feel unsafe Who found it? Who found it? Well the jockeys found it and then they reported it to the stewards and then the stewards who take control of the meeting decided that for the safety of the competitors both equine and human athletes that they'd move the rail Well it's good they're looking after them. You've got
Speaker 17one job to do and that's to get the track right as far as walking it goes let me tell you you can walk it if you want and if you want to good on you for going and walking it I don't because I'm not a curator I'm not a track walker and I don't think he'll mind me saying this because it's a bit of tongue in cheek Mick Kent Senior always walks a track and has always said to me I don't know why you don't go out and walk the track and I say Mick just because you walk it doesn't mean to say you've got any bloody idea laugh laugh laugh the only thing you can do and I'm being serious though the only thing you can do is look at your own line in the sand because do you actually know what you're looking at do you know just because you go and do something it doesn't mean to make you an expert so the point with Johnny and that text is whenever there's a problem on most tracks most people walking it don't pick it up so obviously it wasn't it wasn't something that you know that most people saw and quite often how how do they think tracks are going to race to how they do race yeah so much can change
Speaker 2so many so many variables the last one on this I think at the end of the day now Johnny they'll have a review hopefully it's an independent review race in Victoria and the MRC can come out and just tell us what happened and then we can all move on and we learn from a situation like this and it never happens again and the other aspect to this and this text message come through don't tell Wayne that the rail will be out 13 meters for Manukato Stakes Day Wayne
Speaker 17laugh but that but that but that that's okay because we know what we're going in for and then you know what it's not good don't worry about that it's a group one race day and the race the the rail is out 13 meters that that is that is terrible on about 12 levels but the problem is we have lost Moonee Valley so we actually have to compensate somehow somewhere so that's why they're putting it out that way but I know it's out 13 so I know what to expect and so does everybody else geez
Speaker 16b-box is going to be hard to beat right
Speaker 2at 13. yeah that's where you can control over 1200 meters out in front because there's going to be plenty of pace you would imagine in this year's Manukato so it'll be an interesting day hey let's get to Manukato Stakes Day get to the big race integrity here on the means test we'll start off with the Sir Rupert Clark Stakes because it was a performance that I think we all expected it would happen one day and it did there on Saturday with Angel Capital tasting success in a group one for the first time
Speaker 4from Warnie Von Hawk yellow jersey recon behind them then War Machine Regal Award straightens 250 out a run for Lady Shenandoah up on the inside Seeple's battles on and behind them Angel Capital right down the outer Regal Award approaching the 100 Seeple's and Angel Capital the outside the Enigma himself Angel Capital takes the lead and wins he was too good
Speaker 2for Seppl's Angel Capital and we all expected it to happen one day and it did I think there was a good ride was a
Speaker 16terrific ride wasn't it yeah I mean I think a lot jumped off right but you know he might go on now we know he's a really good horse I see he's in the market for the Tourac so they might stick it step him up over a mile I
Speaker 2reckon they'll go Yulong will use him
Speaker 16as their their their horse for the Everest okay yeah well you know I mean outside of that in the race I thought Seppl's run really well was a great ride Brownie was a was a terrific ride I'll tell you what you'd be concerned if you were Kelvin and and Tony with yellow jersey I think he probably needs to go to the paddock and start again and some of those horses take a while to acclimatize but I had a really good look at him and he got back and maybe the track was a little too hard for him too he might want a bit of sting at he definitely wants further but he was pretty disappointed the other two horses I thought were disappointing were McPrice's horses Sabaj I think and Planet Red they're both really nice horses so maybe it was track conditions or tempo or maybe the track was too hard for them not quite sure it'd be interesting to see what the feedback is from from the boys on that
Speaker 17Wayne I'd love to train him I'd love I'd love I'd love to train him he mightn't be the punter's pal but can I be honest is Autumn Blow the punter's pal I mean how many people do you think he's don't have a bet in that race or do you actually just go and have 50 bucks? Have $100 on her and go, you know what, I'm going to put her one out in the quaddie.
Speaker 2Yeah, a lot of people back, I mean, Autumn Glow, Wayne, they put a lot of money on her because they think she's a short thing, yeah.
Speaker 16I'll tell you who I heard from earlier, Wayne, about Autumn Glow. Mickey Gannon, who was one of the best judges going around racing, said that your favourite horse, Wayne, the Werewolf, the Werewolf can potentially beat Autumn Glow. Now, I don't know what planet he was on or whether he had a late night at a nightclub or something last night, but Autumn Glow wouldn't beat, sorry, Cheer Wolf couldn't beat Autumn Glow down a well. Like, please, stop it. Stop that, please, immediately. Yeah, yeah. Mickey Gannon, please, what are you saying?
Speaker 2Well, Joe believes he can win. I know we've gone off script again, but Joe reckons he can beat Autumn Glow with the blinkers on. Okay. Yeah. Wayne?
Speaker 17Goodness me. It's a horse race, and you know what, Autumn Glow doesn't want to have all the things go wrong with her. I'm sure we'll get the Jolie Star, but there's a perfect example of a great horse that should have won on Saturday, so there's no such thing as a good thing.
Speaker 18Yeah.
Speaker 17Back to Angel Capital. It was a great effort, great win. Good luck to them for sticking so long. Yeah, he mightn't be the punter's pal, but remember, punters, without the owners having these horses race week in and week out, you've got nothing to bet on. So he mightn't be your favourite, but when you've got those really top-line horses, they always do it. There's no doubt about that. It's just a matter. It's a matter of when, and catching him can be hard, but everything fell into play for him on Saturday, and he thought the track was fantastic. Just ask him.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 17Yes.
Speaker 2The Underwood Stakes, it was some build-up. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and the man that dominated the build-up was the man from Perth, that little champ, William Pike. This is what he had to say in the lead-up to this, or last Saturday's Underwood Stakes.
Speaker 19I was a bit crusader on the weekend.
Speaker 20Yeah, we're drawing a plum alley. Better check all the gurus, let them know what my speed map is. But anyway, I'll get my chance.
Speaker 19I was hoping you'd say something like that. I like it when you fired up, Pikey. Well done.
Speaker 2Thanks, mate. The FIFO jockey, William. So that was William Pike. The next day, he said that they should basically, that no one should really have an opinion on where these horses should be. No one should tell him how he should ride his horse. And then he clarified those comments, and he probably didn't word it as well as he wanted it to. But he was great. He was a terrific. I love that build-up, Wayne, with Pikey. And in the end, he rode it to what everyone thought he would with the speed map. He sat one out, one back. He was close enough to Lindemann. Unfortunately, Lindemann didn't perform at his best. What's that? He didn't perform at his best, and Pikey said he probably was ridden too close after finishing, of course, second behind Birdman on Saturday.
Speaker 17Yeah, look at that. It didn't have that.
Speaker 2That's Birdman, Wayne. Anyway, go, Wayne.
Speaker 17Yeah, Johnny's happy about the track on Saturday. He got the cash. Everyone's happy. It's amazing. Winners are grinners. Brian Beattie was a former, in theory, CEO of Race of Victoria, and he said, you know the best place to be on race day? He said, go to the winner's stalls. You have less problems down there than all the other stalls, and he was totally right. Where were we, Gareth? With Pikey. Yeah, well, isn't this something that I said about two years ago on this show with you, Gareth? And it went viral. I had a crack at the jockeys saying, mate, get your speed maps and throw them to the Scheisenhausen, because at the end of the day, does anyone actually go back at the end of the day and look at the speed maps? You know what I say at the end of the day? Now that was actually in the right context. At the end of the day, does anyone ever go back, look at speed maps and go, wrong, wrong, wrong, right, right, right, right? I'd be not interested, no, but you know what? If you're doing and looking at that sort of stuff, you have to go back. Afterwards, and look at what worked and what didn't, because speed maps are only a small guide. And you've got a guide, you've got a speed map. The jockey has a speed map. The trainer might have a speed map. Johnny wants to give, the owner wants to give the jockey a speed map. And then the stewards have got a speed map. Well, how many of those actually lock in together? And then there's the other thing where you talk about people that are using it, jockeys are using the same speed maps. Is someone, not is, could someone manipulate the speed maps for their own personal gain? Now, you'd like to think not, but you know what? We're in the year 2026 and anything can happen. But speed maps are only a bit of a guide, really, at the end of the day. I mean, if you get your horse and you put your horse in a great position where the horse is happy and balanced and travelling, they will hit the line better than most others will. Don't always have to win, but, you know, we've never, ever got involved in speed maps and I reckon we've done okay.
Speaker 16I want to give Oz a rap for Birdman. He found him off a race overseas a couple of years ago and was at him and he was a 2,000 metre horse, a wait for age horse. He came out and sort of thought he might have been a Melbourne Cup horse because he'd run over some longer distances, but he pushed really hard. Chris has done an extraordinary job with the horse, really. So I thought... Was he a deer horse, Johnny? Was he a deer one? No, he wasn't over there. He wasn't over there at the top? No, nowhere near the prices we're paying now, Wayne. No, nowhere near it. So he, you know, Ozzie always had great belief in the horse. He was over racing and playing up a bit and probably an example similar to that yellow jersey that when he came, we thought he was going to go bang, bang, bang, and he just sort of didn't settle. It's taken a bit of time. So some of those international horses just do that. And obviously when they're in the care of the best trainers, they get every opportunity. So I thought the race was a... It was a terrific race this year. And I think you'll find the majority of those horses that are looking to go on will probably go to the 2000 metre race at Flemington in two weeks.
Speaker 2The table stakes?
Speaker 16I'd say they all go there rather than going to the Might and Power the week after because you've obviously got to run into cheese and alibi there. And I don't think anybody wants to do that. So for those who are keen to get and watch a similar field, I would imagine take on, and obviously Sir Delia, I guess would be in that race as well. I don't think there's too much between a number of these horses.
Speaker 2Set weights and penalties, which makes it interesting.
Speaker 16It will make it interesting, but I don't think there's much between Birdman, Buckaroo... Eliana. Eliana, Sir Delia. Those sort of four horses at their best, I don't think there's much between them. So it's going to be a really interesting Cox Plate this year, knowing that you're not going to have Autumn Glow and you're not going to have... You're not going to have the cheese and alibi stand out in the race. So it's a race on that, you know, we all want to have a crack at. Would you be scared of a three-year-old, like a blind race or a Trombolt? Yeah, look, I have to say, I have to say, I know Trent's been wrapping blind race for a long time. Huge, huge win on the weekend, but an excellent ride. Obviously Brownie took off early to make it a solidly run sort of race. There are plenty of horses there to challenge and Blake just took his time and let him go around and held his horse together and won very easily. So I would imagine if it goes on and wins the Guineas and can beat Trombolt, Trent will probably roll the dice and run in a Cox Plate. Now, whether it can beat those more mature horses, I'm not sure, but gets him with the weight relief, so good.
Speaker 2A few more questions. Buckaroo, would he go to a Caulfield Cup instead of a Cox Plate?
Speaker 16No, I think he'll go Cox Plate. I think Chris is pretty adamant that he wants to keep him to 1800, 2000. You know, he wasn't fully fit on the weekend and there was always... There was always a concern with the map for him, and I know we're talking about maps, Wayne, but there always was because clearly Lindemann was going to lead, Birdman was going to be a lot closer than what Buckaroo was. I thought Buckaroo finished off really well. I thought Middle Earth ran well too from a Melbourne Cup perspective, the horse that ran third last year. The only disappointing run was Lindemann, really, and that was the question, wasn't it? Like, disappointing run first up, blew him away on a leader's track, controlled in Sydney second up, and then found the right, race here, but has never really gone the Melbourne way of going. So, I'm sure they'll go back and win a nice race with it over the balance of the Sydney Carnival.
Speaker 2Wayne, a couple of questions for you. Can Birdman beat Sir Delius in a Cox Plate after watching him on Saturday? No. No. And would you forgive Lindemann for failing at Caulfield? Chris Waller pointed out yesterday on Correct Weight that he did pull up with a slight issue. He had mucus in the throat.
Speaker 16He'll go back and win that. Two million dollar hill stakes, I would have thought.
Speaker 2But there's a chance that they want to give him a crack at a Cox Plate, so they might give him a chance at Flemington. Would that be worth doing with Lindemann to see if he can handle the Melbourne way of going and then just put it down to the Caulfield track?
Speaker 17Well, who wrote him? Blake Sheehan. He said he just didn't handle the Caulfield track. Now, there's a horse that maybe with the Rail 7, would that have made any difference? I don't know. But Blake said he didn't handle the Melbourne way of going, so that doesn't happen. That doesn't happen very often. You normally find going to Sydney, put it this way, the best jockeys ever would always say Melbourne seemed like a more natural way of going than going Sydney way. They would say that when you canter off to head round the barriers, most horses would jump on their left leg, which is the Melbourne way of going. But every now and then it does happen, and if it did happen to Lindemann, well, you know, take him back to Sydney and run him up there. But one thing, Johnny, can I just say, you're talking about hiding from Sheehan's alibi. She raced over 2000. I was amazing. No, I don't know whether she has, does she?
Speaker 21Well, you know what, Wayne, we'll discuss the decision for Pete Moody
Speaker 2straight after this break here on Giddy Up. This is the Monday Means Test. It's 20 minutes past 10.

Speaker 2Welcome back to Giddy Up. This is the Monday Means Test. Gareth Hall, Johnny O'Neill and Wayne Hawks. The big news that came out yesterday regarding the Might and Power meeting, the first day of that Caulfield Cup Carnival, was the news that Peter Moody told Andrew Eddy there from Racing.com that his star mare, she's an alibi, who's now $1.50 to win the Might and Power stakes, will go to that race over the 2,000 metres. And then Moody, and he's a masterful trainer and you admire him doing something different that not too many trainers I think would do. So 2,000 metres back to 1,500 metres with a three-week break. And he told Andrew Eddy he did that because he wants to try and get her to 2,000 metres. He reckons that she will be a 2,000 metre horse and he wants to try her out at that distance there this spring. And this is an opportunity, Wayne, for Peter Moody to do that. Did that surprise you that he's gone down that path?
Speaker 17No, not really, because at the end of the day, most people that are trying something usually are doing it at the end of a preparation and that's when they're tired, a.k.a. autumn glow. See, I reckon she ran the trip out last prep, but she was just probably tired and over the top and she only got beaten with a couple of links to Sir Delius, so it's not like she got lapped. One thing, and I've said this to you many, many times, Gareth, and you know exactly what I'm going to say. An extra two or 400 metres in this game pulls a lot of horses up. And then if you look at the Olympic Games, I mean, why don't the great swimmers swim the 50, 100, 200, 400, 800? Because they sort of specialise. Now, the great, great horses can do most freaky things and she's an alibi, isn't in that class yet, but she's on the way. There's no doubt about that. You know, she's not freaky yet. She's not in the sunline category yet. So... Will she run 2,000? I think she will, but at the end of the day, if you want to go the might and power and have a crack against her, I suppose this is going to be your time because there is no guarantees that she's an alibi, will run 2,000 metres. Because until you try any horse, pedigrees and everything else mean nothing.
Speaker 2Yeah. What about, like, the Golden Eagle's still her grand final, Wayne, but then to give her a three-week break, she travels to Sydney and then to her performance, her best on grand final day in a way, that's the race that they aimed her up at, at the start of her preparation.
Speaker 17She's going to be hard and fit.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 17Yep, she's hard and fit. Sometimes when you're in the preparation or going, you know, about to go into preparation, the races really don't run the suit. If there was a mile wait for Aiden race, maybe Peter might have run her in that race, but he wants to try her over 2,000. What's she going to be, third up, 2,000 metres, Caulfield? Do you know what? She deserves to be $1.50 and let's hope that she wins and wins very, very well. But, you know, at the end of the day, now is the time to try it. It's like the overseas horses. Don't take a horse overseas when they're at the absolute end of their career and end of their campaigns. You've got to take them when they're strong, fit and fresh, if you're a chance of winning.
Speaker 2Johnny, will you be scared if she's Alibi? So maybe Buckaroo or Birdman would have went to a mountain power. Do you change your mind now? Like you did in the Maccabi Diva, which seemed to work pretty well because you were able to win a Group 1 with Birdman in an underwood after scratching on race day.
Speaker 16Yeah, look, I think that'll be Chris and Ozzy's call, clearly, but I wouldn't be going there. I mean, I'm a firm believer the two best horses in the country, it's pretty obvious what they are every time they front up when they're not racing each other. They're $1.50 or $1.30 or $1.60 or whatever they are. So I'm sure Peter Moody was sitting home looking at that 1,800 metre race on Saturday thinking, why am I going to trial when I can go around in three weeks and win $600,000 or whatever it may be and then... And then go to Sydney. So, you know, I mean, he's an elite trainer. He wouldn't be doing it if he didn't think that the horse could do it. And I'm sure watching the race yesterday was, or Saturday, he was thinking that. So my preference as an owner, and as I said, you know, we'll all have a say, but Oz will control it with Chris, that they both go and run against Sir Delius. And then they'll probably both go onto the Cox Plate, I would have thought, with Buckaroo, you know, being beaten the nose behind the best horse in the country last year and... And Birdman in great form. So I think it'll be a really good race.
Speaker 2It's 10.27. We're going to take a break. On the other side of it, we're going to talk about the Cups. The weights were out there on Thursday. It's got everybody talking. We had the naturalism there on Saturday. Johnny O'Neill, you know what? You might be right. There's a chance. I thought, jeez, you're dreaming a little bit, but you could own the trifecta in this year's Caulfield Cup. We'll discuss all of that next year on Giddy Up.
Speaker 1Join the conversation. Text us. On 0-4-double-9-7-3-6-7-3-6. Live across Australia. This is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 2Welcome back to Giddy Up. Gareth Hall, Wayne Hawks, Johnny O'Neill. It's a busy show. Johnny O'Neill's got an important meeting just after 11 o'clock, so let's get stuck into the rest of our topics on the means test. This is what Johnny O'Neill had to say last week, and he did cop a little bit of criticism for it. Everyone thought, jeez, he's getting a little bit too cocky. Caulfield Cup.
Speaker 16Good one. This is a rah-rah for you. I reckon the horses that I'm in with Ozzie, that I've got shares in with Ozzie, and one with Kieran, I reckon we'll run 1-2-3 in the Caulfield Cup this year.
Speaker 2So who are those horses, Saran?
Speaker 16I don't know what order they're going to run, but I reckon we're going to run 1-2-3. Do you? I do. Who are they? Saran will be one, St George will be another, and Point of Law. Now, I did talk to you about Point of Law the other day, $126. See what price it is now? $16.
Speaker 2Hard to get one off Johnny Gosden. And why would the King sell it? Because he's a caring lawyer. Why would he sell it? I don't think it's any good, Johnny.
Speaker 16What, you don't think it's any good?
Speaker 2Yeah, so that was Johnny O'Neill being pretty bullish about his stay as heading towards a Caulfield Cup. This is what happened on Saturday in the Naturalism. Oh, we didn't have, oh, I thought we had the race ready to go. Anyway, you finished second, first and second. And won, yeah. Yeah.
Speaker 16Saran, beautiful ride, E. Brown, setback, took his time. Yeah. Zahra, huge ride from 17, went back, gave him a cuddle. Got a lot, and sort of took off a little early. Jeez, you let go, St. George. But Saran had an easier run. And I know Ethan was very upbeat after the race. So, so it was a really good, a really good run and win by him and a great run by St. George. It's been well documented that, you know, the vets that have been looking after St. George where he's feet and errand down at Fingal's done a great job. Yeah. So. We keep our fingers crossed and, you know, we're now qualified. So the challenge was they had to run. Who rides in the cups? Well, hopefully Brownie will ride. Saran. Saran. It'll just depend what weight he gets. And hopefully Mark rides St. George. But it'll be interesting to see because Point of Law comes out as well. So he's got to get into the race yet. But I just sent some information through to the boys in the, in the box at the back saying that Harry, Justice is absolutely over the moon with the horse with Point of Law. He's, uh, he's in quarantine and his work's been extraordinary. Will he get a start at Point of Law? I'm not quite sure. It'll be interesting to see. Look, he may not, but we, uh, we certainly bought him hoping that he would. So if he does, he'll be very hard to beat.
Speaker 2Is the naturalism form the Caulfield Cup form this year? Like it was last year, Wayne?
Speaker 17Yeah, look, you'd have to say it is because they're, they're as good as what, what's going to be running in the race. It's a handicap and your best horse is the race. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. You know, you're running in your, you know, your might and powers and your Turnbull stakes and your hill stakes in Sydney. So I, the Caulfield Cup for years just went a bit, uh, went a bit skew with and went missing. But in recent years, it's been a much, much better race. And I hope it's a, uh, I hope it's a great race this year. And obviously with the, uh, last year, the Caulfield Cup winner went on to win the Melbourne Cup. So we've got to have three cheers for that because any, uh, anyone that can do that, that's rare, rare air to be able to win Caulfield Melbourne Cups. That won't be getting done very often. I know Freedman's did a few years ago. But, uh, and then the McAvoys had done it last year, but, uh, mate, we could go 20 years without that happening again.
Speaker 2Yeah. Hey, I'm half yours now. He gets, I reckon there's a chance you'll go to a Caulfield Cup now. 57 and a half on his back. He's got 59 in a Melbourne Cup. He's $15 with bet 365. Would you go down that path, Johnny?
Speaker 16Oh, look, probably. I mean, you know, he's an elite stayer. He's already proven it. And I think to win a Caulfield Cup and a Melbourne Cup, come back and have another crack at a Caulfield Cup. You got to do it. But I mean, he can't win the Melbourne Cup with that weight. I wouldn't have thought. Um, what did he carry last year? 54 and a half or something? Something like that.
Speaker 6Yeah.
Speaker 16Yeah. It's a pretty big post of weight, isn't it? To carry in the Melbourne Cup second time round. And I think, you know.
Speaker 17Yeah, but there's, but now there's, now there's a minimum, Johnny. Yeah.
Speaker 16And the other thing is, the other thing is, I mean, we've, we've listened to Chris Waller's comments in relation to Aliana and. We're about to listen.
Speaker 2In fact, we'll talk about that now. This is, so I asked, I had David Hagen on the show on Thursday or Friday. Friday. And I asked him a question about Aliana getting that way. And then after that this is what chris waller had to say about all of that on correct weight yesterday with the noonan boys but we'll start off with the chief handicapper race of victoria david hagan talking
Speaker 19about aliana i would say look i must to be fair even when i look at the melbourne cup weights traditionally from where they've been previously they do look high but once you actually go through the field and the relativities in those races and i think it'll probably take a week or two for that to become more apparent in terms of where she is and in terms of her weight from last year um she was weighted at 53 now as an older horse that's the equivalent of 54 and a half so i haven't got carried away in terms of what she's done in the last year and a half although it has been very exciting the temptation was there to take her a little bit further but she's effectively moved two kilos versus the weight for age scale from where she was last year so her true weight in these races is 53 and a half so i think it's going to take a little bit longer to get her 56 and a half and i would encourage them look at the caulfield cup weights see the relativities to those horses and understand everyone's moved the same into the melbourne cup and when we made this policy change um as of last year we did take into account the fact in the caulfield and melbourne cups this century so 25 or 26 um runnings now if you include 2000 then the equal two horses in the top of the weights or the number of one and two saddle cloths and and ties in weights they're outperforming um their participation rate by by nearly double so that's in the caulfield and and melbourne cup so it tend to suggest that even though the weights are going up if you if you're number one and number two on the set of cloth or even you've got a better than pretty much double chance of winning than you have for other horses down in the weights be honest i couldn't believe
Speaker 12she got 58 in the melbourne cup um i'm not whinging but holy heck it makes it hard um for a horse like eliana to win a melbourne cup in the caulfield cup i don't think she's going to be able to win 58 she's a mirror like that's that's equivalent to 60 for a for a culture of gilding like yeah she's a good horse but she's won a derby a ranve and a tankard um but she's got 58 or a 60 equivalent for a male um but can't be a pretty good horse she won her third melbourne cup of 58 and a half and poor old eliana i don't like i just can't get my head around it to tell you the truth
Speaker 13yeah it is interesting isn't it with the new landscape with the 59 kilogram top weight required in the melbourne cup is this something that you're not necessarily in agreeance with the way the rules are now sort of situated for the handicapping in the car
Speaker 12look i've got multiple horses so it's gonna it's not good it's it's um it's not gonna affect me but i think the owners of eliana deserve a chance to be running in a melbourne cup like the horses before her uh with a fair weight so um i don't know i don't know it's um i don't know where we're getting as simple as that and i'm not whinging but um i'm just saying eliana like she can't win a
Speaker 13melbourne cup 58 can she well i don't know i wouldn't put it past her in terms of what we saw in the tanker it'd be a great challenge as a racing fan i'd love to see her to try and do it but see
Speaker 12that's yeah no i get what you're saying but we're going to patch them up after the race and uh like it breaks their heart it's a tough race so yeah it's an interesting one and uh i don't want to cause a debate for her or i'll get get political at all but all i'm saying is i'm not very happy with eliana's got
Speaker 1658 so that's chris wally all thoughts on that yeah look i think i think the biggest challenge is that traditionally and i'd love to go back over the last sort of six or eight years where the international raiders were the horses that came out and i'm not saying they dominated the race but there was always some really good quality credentialed horses that would come out and would sort of get 59s 60 whatever it may be now those horses for whatever reason are not coming out they're either not passing scans and they're not running so if you go through and have a look at the top 10 or 12 horses that we would talk about in a melbourne cup and generally there's probably six to eight horses that can win and then there's a lot of horses that have qualified and the old handicap days of horses getting in with 51 and 52 and those really light weights generally those horses have won a lot of races and they've won a lot of races and they've won a lot of races and less a quality race to qualify unless they're those three-year-olds rising four and the weights have been changed a bit out of europe but we don't really have as many of those in the race this year garris so when you go through and have a look and we start to discuss weights and we start to look at how you would position them half yours has got a lot of weight considering i mean he won the corfield cup and melbourne cup defiantly is a nice enough horse it'll be reasonably competitive czar ran's in very well at the weights i think it'll do what happens in the corfield cup aliana is without a doubt the best staying horse in the country um you know when we're 58 well i think she probably can i mean off the basis of the field then you've got at the wolf is that he's at the wolf well it what did it win it won at newcastle stop it highway man i don't know anything about it james j braddock is the interesting horse who's been gelded craig williams book craig williams booked um the other day that race in iowa was a really good race and i think it's a really good race and i think it's a really good race and i think it's a really good race and i think it's a really good race and i think it's a island that was in it got a long way back it was very good well it just looked like it had a look to me like it was a great was a huge a huge run gets him well at the weights past the scans for somebody that asked on the text chocolates couldn't win a melbourne cup i wouldn't have thought be great to run in it don't get me wrong but different level of form and then you get down to st george and dark wine sea birdman won't go there well then the other horses you're talking about running can't win yeah so just with that like um
Speaker 2i think she had to get the weight that she she did with the horses that have nominated for the melbourne cup so and with the the weights going up but take it's inside the inner sanctum with very elegant like she carried 57 and she finished third in a cox plate before you decided to go to the melbourne cup but when did you decide to go to the cup with well i think i think chris was
Speaker 16always very hesitant and you picked it up in the note that he's got to patch these horses back up right and the melbourne cup is is the race isn't it we all we all want to see the best horses and the best staying horses race but chris was always very very hesitant about running her with that weight um and i think it was just the fact that from a ratings perspective it seemed that she would go to a new peak if she got to 3200 meters so i think there was a fair bit of debate around whether she would run well there definitely was did you want to go look i did i did um i think in the end chris was happy to go but in an ideal world 56 and a half we wouldn't have even been talking about it but the weight she had to carry was a huge was a huge effort to win right so i sort of get up but she was almost at the end of her career when that happened too whereas alyana where that horse sits it can it can definitely win a cox plate it can probably win the champions 2000 meter race the last you know it's going to have the similar horses sir delius and bird man and buckaroo and those type of horses to beat there might be in a you know a three-year-old that that gets him with no weight but i sort of see chris's point in that it's not the be-all and end-all though everybody wants it to be for the melbourne cup and can you come back after carrying 58 and have a really hard run in a melbourne cup and be competitive again i'm sure you can but he'd be looking at wanting to race her for another couple of seasons i would have
Speaker 2thought you know wayne your thoughts on all this rare rang and said he'd like to ride alyana in
Speaker 17the melbourne cup who oh yeah joe maria unless you've already booked him johnny i'm not i'm not sure about your bookings yet but look at the end of the day i i've got to take the pi double five come on chris you're allowed to have a whinge mate you're allowed to whinge you cry when you win brother you're allowed to have a whinge he said it twice there i'm not whinging but you're allowed to have a whinge you're allowed to it's as simple as that when you look at the uh the melbourne corfield melbourne cup winner and what weight he's got compared to her that i'm assuming is what david hagan's getting at gareth when he spoke to you the other day yeah the other thing is did you ask him with 57 and a half for um last year's cup winner in the now he's got 57 after the corfield cup he has 59 in the melbourne cup would he have given him 57 and a half if the melbourne cup didn't have the uh the minimum top weight at 59
Speaker 2um i didn't ask that question but i imagine yeah it depends on who's the top so that so
Speaker 17sure but but let's say 57 and a half for uh half yours in a corfield cup gets 59 to melbourne cup yeah so let's let's just say he was only getting let's just say he was only getting only getting 57 and a half in a in a corfield in a melbourne cup that means aliana is going to get uh what was she going to get 56 yeah correct so if she had 56 would everyone be saying it was an the right weight that's more my point because the because the minimum top weight has been raised from 57 to 59 so that all of the jmacs and the shins and all those sort of guys can have more of a chance of getting a ride in the race that's that's where it ends up i mean i i said it last year i would love to have seen eliana run in a corfield cup but they didn't choose to go down that path so this year they're obviously choosing to and now now she's going to be stung with the weight so you get i agree with johnny you look at the quality maybe the quality's not there this year and david hagen was it was a bit hamstrung but he's still going to get the top weight but he's still going to get a little bit there's one thing about those uh those buggers and i'll tell you what it is whenever you think you outsmart the handicapper most times they get it right and and I'm probably hating myself for saying that, but they do get it right more than they get it wrong. And most times in these great races, the best horses are looked after the best.
Speaker 18Yeah.
Speaker 17You win a couple of races at Sandown, all of a sudden you're carrying 58s to 60s in a restricted race. They don't mind giving average horses 60 during the year, so when you're pushing up to 59s and 58s and 60s with these great horses that really are wait-for-rage horses, they're not handicapped. And, you know, I mean, look what Eliana's done. I mean, she hasn't won as many in the last couple of years, but she's run some amazing placings, and if they hadn't dodged a couple of the great, great horses, she would have won many more.
Speaker 2It's a situation where the jockeys and they, Racing Victoria Tour and the VRC, talk to the participants about getting the better jockeys in the Melbourne Cup so they raise the weights, but then you're going to get this situation. And the situation is, is that do they... Do they want to run their good horses around Flemington carrying these weights? So you can't have the best of both worlds. Well, you can't, no, you can't. It's 10.45. We're going to take a break and come back with plenty more. This is The Means Test.
Speaker 1Join the conversation. Text us on 0499 736 736. Live across Australia, this is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 8Now keep raising an effort going after Margo. Then King Secret, Spicy Martini, Jolly Star and Headwall is starting to unwind. Ninja right down the outside. Marzu still shows the way. King Secret coming through the middle. It's Marzu taking out the shorts.
Speaker 2Marzu takes out the shorts. And after that, Carrying Rising's now $1.36. We bet $3.65 for the Everest, Johnny.
Speaker 16Old freak, that horse. What a run. Congratulations to Joey. He's done a wonderful job with that horse, hasn't he? Yeah. Just to dominate the way it just keeps running up. Is it eight or nine?
Speaker 2And he says he'll have to come to Melbourne because he's run out of tricks with him because he won't go to the start. So he has to try him at Gosford and those places so he can just trick him in a way. But he was great. Jolly Star was pretty good. I think she'll get a slot for the Everest for Chris Waller. Headwall was the horse that's interesting now to see what happens with him.
Speaker 17Well, he ran good first up, Headwall. He was probably unlucky. He probably nearly could have should have. One, but maybe just second up after a 12-month layoff. You know, but he was still hitting the line strong. Marzu jumped lead, stacked him up, did what he's done great and well for so many years. And question of that notice, Gareth, how much prize money has he won? I'll talk when you look that up.
Speaker 211.1 million.
Speaker 17Crazy, crazy. What a great horse and what a great ride for the Connections. So he did a super, super job. Jolly Star drew a crap barrier and it got beat. I'll say it. Week in, week out. And you know what? J-Mac couldn't do anything about it, but just should have won. You don't back them when they draw bad barriers. And she just didn't get in. And she just should have won. Simple as that. It was no one's fault. You knew when the barriers came out. I heard you Saturday morning, Gareth, and you were talking to the boys about speed maps and where she's going to be in the run. And did she punch forward? Did she go back? And she was just in no man's land facing the breeze and just should have won. And there was a big question mark on her, how she was going to come back. Yeah. From England. So she looked amazing on Saturday. I was there and she looked really, really well. So the trip to Europe and back certainly hasn't hurt her.
Speaker 2We're going to take a break. We're going to come back with our yes, yes, yeses, our oh noes. And also an interesting situation regarding the Fiend Stakes. We'll discuss that next year on Giddy Up.
Speaker 1736-736. Live across Australia, this is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 2Welcome back to Giddy Up, Gareth Hall with you, Johnny O'Neill and Wayne Hawks. Now, Johnny, what about this on Saturday? If there's talk that could be five horses, there might be a few more in the Fiend Stakes. But if there's not enough horses for it to be in the quaddi league, would you consider moving it early to the, say, race one or race two on that program there on Sunday? And for the fact that Mr. Brightside will be there, you guarantee that he will be competing because he'll go and compete on a good four. But if it's a track upgrade, which there's a strong possibility if the rain doesn't come, that would be a track upgrade at the back end of that meeting to a good three, he would be scratched.
Speaker 16Well, I think we want to see the best horses race and the best races. And clearly programming has got a lot to do with that. So She's an Alibi goes where she goes and Autumn Globe goes where she goes. But I think for Mr. Brightside, perspective, and I think from an overall racing perspective, if that track, if, if the Hayes team is saying that we want to look after him, it was a hard track last start. We're not going to run him. If it's any sort of firmer than a four, um, you've got to have a look at the track conditions and understand what's what. It doesn't matter whether it's race one, two, three, four, five or six, does it? I mean, all that will happen is the punters will get organized a bit earlier. The people will get to the track a bit earlier. I think you've got to put these horses. In the right races at the right time, because otherwise, if, if they're indicating that if the track does get upgraded, you're going to scratch, you might have a field of two.
Speaker 2Well, there's, there's, there's the argument the other way saying that if I've got a horse that would love a good three, it's not fair if they move the race just for the one horse, Mr. Brightside. But I think if it's a small field under the circumstances, they look at the nominations and it's the class that everybody wants to see Mr. Brightside V pride of Jenny Wayne. So why not? Why not? Why not? Um, move that race earlier on the cart.
Speaker 17No, no, that's not fair. Gareth, what Johnny said is right. That's totally, well, it's totally not fair. You can't just move it. You can't just move a race because this bright sides connection is saying we'll scratch it. We don't have a good four. I mean, if the poor bugger at Corfu is not enough strife now, he's in a world of bloody pain now, because everyone's gone out and said that. So everyone's going to be looking at this track for Saturday, he'll be in the fetal position. I'll make from a call for the curator.
Speaker 2Leave it with, if there's not enough forces for it to be in the quality leg, why not move it earlier? It makes sense to me. Or run it later, run it later.
Speaker 16I think what they're talking about Hawks is the track, the track with the weather, the way the forecast is, if it's going to be warm at any stage, if there's going to be any given that track, it's going to be very early in the day because like by later in the afternoon. So clearly the challenge there is, I mean, pride of Jenny's going there. There's no guarantee. I mean, it's. I mean, she's an eight year old mayor rising nine. Like there's no guarantee if they put up a good three, that she goes there. Um, I haven't spoken to Kiran or Tony about it, but like they'll be wanting to look after her too. Like they've got to go there in a way. Cause it's going to start somewhere. Well, I get that. But having said that they, again, I mean, Tony's been, and Kiran had been placing her really well. So I can't see any point if that track is rock hard. What are you going to run an eight year old mayor rising nine and one of the best horses we've seen. Well, I mean, I just think it's flirting with danger or floating with danger.
Speaker 2I can understand that you can't have rules for just one horse, but if it's not a quality leg, correct. And just then if it's not a quality leg, it's going to be in the first half of the card.
Speaker 17Anyway, yes. Gareth, does the quality have to be in consecutive races?
Speaker 2Yes, it does. Wayne. Yep. Yeah. It has to be the last four races. Yeah.
Speaker 17You can't, well, do you know what it is? What it is. And I mean, if you go and start and flirt and just mess around with a couple of, uh, great old horses that, that, that, that is not, that is not fair. And I mean, I'd be pretty, I'd be pretty peeped off if that was the case. And I was, I had runners in the fee and up against those two horses and they were just manipulating things to suit those two horses. That is not fair. And you, you know what? I can't even believe you're actually saying this, Gareth, that's not fair.
Speaker 16I just want to add to that.
Speaker 17You are a Tony Otterbrae man because you want him on your show, Gareth. Mate, I just want to add to this all.
Speaker 2No, that's just a stupid comment, you idiot. I just think the challenge. It's nothing to do with Tony Otterbrae. It'd be more, it'd be more favouring Mr. Brightside than pride of Jenny.
Speaker 16All I know is we might find ourselves on Saturday. The way the programming is. You might have two horses. You might have two horses in the race. Yeah. Yeah. You might have two.
Speaker 17Well, if it is that, it is, if that's how it is, that's how it is. Oh, that's good for the game. Have two horses in the race.
Speaker 16I'd say what will happen now is there'll be a stack of noms because people will be throwing noms in on the basis that this might happen. I mean, if you say. If you sit back looking at the prize money and it's pretty clear that Brightside's coming out and I'm not even saying that Jenny's coming out, they'll might be completely wrong. No, she'll be there. Yeah. But, but if they were to come out, well, then you're definitely in, aren't you? You're throwing your noms in, I would have thought. Yeah. It's an interesting debate.
Speaker 2Anyway, we've got to.
Speaker 17It's no different, no different in wintertime. It's no different in wintertime when you're, when the track's wet, do you or don't you run? And you've got the option to run and. Yes. When it's wet, no one complains as much as when it's.
Speaker 16But here's my concern with that Hawks here. I've got 1058. Right. Here's my concern with that. They accept with Brightside. They expect, accept. Yeah. They run. Everybody now knows this. So they don't upgrade the track. Yeah. It is a three, but they don't upgrade it so they can't scratch. Yeah. That's interesting. Time for a break.
Speaker 2We'll discuss about that straight after this. That's right.
Speaker 1Join the conversation. Text us on 04009. 736-736-7366. 636 live across australia this is giddy up with gareth hall welcome back to giddy up you welcome
Speaker 2our friends now listening to us in wa on their local scn turf dial great to have your company joining us on rsa 927 scn track also if you're watching us on racing.com hello to you and if you're listening to us a little later on which i know a lot of you do on the podcast um it's time now for our oh noes our oh noes as we continue on the monday's monday means test johnny o'neill wayne hawks gareth hall with you you can take it away wayne yeah i've got two this week well
Speaker 17obviously the biggest one was the melbourne racing club but we won't go over the uh what happened there on saturday with the track but uh i was at kembla grains last thursday and there's the kembla grains track and then there's the inside track the illawarra grange so what do you reckon happened out goes nash or willard before the first to go and walk the track he's walking the wrong track he sees ash morgan and jay mack walking the inside track he runs across at the 200 meters like no one's seen him but then just started waddling his way back and the amazing part was clary connor's triple golden slipper winning trainer was there and he watched all the jockeys go out and clary called and he said you watch he said one of these blokes would go out and walk the wrong track so
Speaker 2we've got to realize what track you're on that's a bit unfair the other one was uh well no it's not
Speaker 17he was walking the wrong track yeah he was walking the wrong track yeah might have been preparing for later in the year yeah yeah the other one was uh i pulled up a corfield on uh wednesday and old mate just dead set stood in front of me with his hand out stop i find out later on that everyone was half driving through and not stopping at the gate that's why he was so stubborn come the last race and i i got there late he pulls up and he i wind the window down he looks at me and he goes are you a jockey are you a jockey this uh this this young uh maori gentleman who i find out later on his nickname was junior yeah his nickname is junior that's how big junior was junior looks at me and junior looks at me and says mate aren't you a jockey obviously i just shook my head and uh could not uh couldn't could not believe that but uh do you know who i am i'm waiting for you junior yeah no i didn't say that and i've never in my life and then you know what he was only doing his job he was only doing his job but uh g was junior i'm uh i i i was going to be a jockey
Speaker 2till i was about 12 years of age mate and that close-up sees you got a few chins i don't know like on that's a few text messages coming through not from me but anyway well that's okay what about
Speaker 17you what about you were there something about mary hair that just going anyway johnny i've got a couple um
Speaker 16my uh my two uh race two at caulfield on saturday the wonderful craig knew it was abducted i say abducted inducted as i abducted yeah inducted into the hall of fame he's my yes yes yes well and wonderful but but the oh no is he either dropped his wedding ring or he dropped something in race two on uh on icu a horse of aussies um clearly should have won went back forward in out round back yeah a huge run so have a look at that and then a horse that i've got a very very small share in the last race at sydney if anybody wants to if you're having a great day and you want to have a bad day uh go back and watch the last race in sydney and she's an artist and hippos ride um who's a wonderful rider but he slaughtered it okay it was disgraceful let's get to our yes yes
Speaker 8yeses yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes there's a couple um well under the brisbane lions into
Speaker 2another grand final we're going to be mighty hard to beat against the freemantle football club and you just pointed out froggy new a legend legend yeah legend of tassie racing well deserved froggy
Speaker 16so job well done um johnny your yes great horses back racing it was a privilege to sit and watch some really nice emerging horses for you guys thank you so much for watching and i'll see you next time as well but the jocks put the show on geordie charles rode really well he rode a double um shinny rode well ethan brown rode a double uh marks uh marks are and then obviously benny mellum congratulations to uh to benjamin two group one winners so uh yeah i thought it was uh it was just fantastic to watch great riders on terrific horses as we uh as we get into the spring and my
Speaker 2other yes yes yes william pike i thought he was superb good fun um i love the way he went about it last last week last week leading up to the underwood pete moody for what he's like um obviously saying what he thought there with benny mellon and benny mellon coming on the show and explaining why he thought it was the right thing to do so i think that's great for racing when you what happened what happened there gareth oh murd said he was too cute on briar uh bridal waltz um and benny explained well she just was feeling the the hard track and he and he that's why he nursed her for as long as
Speaker 16he did so i think that's good for the game yeah right he's point barrow was a good win too wasn't it big wasn't it it's a nice horse that yeah obviously anthony and sam have got to the bottom of it now so it'll uh it'll be hard to beat in that sprint race the last day of the carnival
Speaker 2yes yes yes wayne no i've got none this week okay there you go um plenty text messages coming through gringotts what'd you make of the ride of nashville well look i will say that you know
Speaker 16from nash's perspective he he went out to win the horse worked fantastic last week and and he was pretty adamant that he thought we could really test the mayor um so we certainly weren't riding to run second because if we had have come back a bit and taken it easy uh the way that he ran um i think he probably would have run second so i mean he only got beaten two lengths around fifth but nash definitely went out to win and we saw how good
Speaker 2she is i've got a few questions for you boys um g'day johnny how do you feel that angel capital has won a group one i recall you saying he needs to um um be stood down and assessed by a therapist now he's one do you have um do you have to assess do you have to be assessed by a therapist i'm being assessed by a therapist
Speaker 16all of the time there's no doubt about that but uh as i said again chris waller great trainer and benny knows the horse well and finally found it's the right race and what do you make of jimmy star's
Speaker 2chances with the rail out that far now in a manicato on saturday it'll be interesting to
Speaker 16see we tried him in the blinkers the other day and he went terrific for everybody that saw that in cranbourne so um i'm pretty bullish on jimmy on the weekend i'm not too worried about that
Speaker 2autumn glow was the second leg of the sydney quaddie on saturday that didn't stop punters investing 328 000 quaddie paid over 500 i'd take that any day of the week for your information the second favorite won the first and last league um i agree with wayne it's unfair to all the other horses this is regarding mr brightside um or the fiend stakes being moved earlier on the program to guarantee that brightside competes um maybe wayne is only interested in what's good for wayne not for the game which is fair enough that's from kyle it's a good point kyle
Speaker 17no it's true that's a good point isn't that's a good point isn't it really when do i ever put on my hawks racing i'll tell you what there's hawks he's a legend he says how it is there's plenty of
Speaker 2positive for you hey johnny um i haven't got a hawks racing hat on very rarely do i ever do hey johnny you gotta go get a meeting um sarango the melbourne cup if he runs well in the caulfield
Speaker 16cup i would say yeah any winners for us something for the battles you've got a nice horse running at hawksbury this week called barracks i did tip at early doors for a golden slipper troll good the other day and he'll go around there in a thousand meter race and be hard to beat good on you johnny sunday all right jimmy star get on and garners a khan all right again hopes
Speaker 2um thanks mate hey wayne you're gonna stay with me because we're gonna get through all these text messages if that's okay okay we're gonna take a break and we'll come back with the text messages on the garrett's horse and hound text line
Speaker 1join the conversation texters on 0 4 double 9 7 3 6 7 3 6 live across australia this is giddy up with gareth hall
Speaker 2here's we're getting some great text messages coming through on the garrett's horse and hound text line wayne let's get stuck into them because i know how much you love these
Speaker 17um and we've got a bit of time now i do i do actually yes here we go um mazu my best of the
Speaker 2day no excuses from the beaten brigade i picked him from the trials and his sectionals well unto that punter also good to see you again i'm jimmy star and i'll see you in the next video to see the first animals at the trials when easily exciting time seeing their progeny um that is
Speaker 17exciting isn't it wayne yeah it is i mean animo stood for a hundred thousand dollars he was a great great race horse and won five or six group ones and out of all the first season stadions no disrespect to the rest he was a mile ahead of the others and they were really good sorts and they sold exceptionally well so to be fair the blow torch is on him right from uh right from magic millions back um back in january because they were such good horses and they were really good sorts so it's good to see them coming out and uh doing the job this morning shut up wayne ha ha ha
Speaker 2autumn glow not the punters power back to every start from dubu including seven dollars for the epsom and eight dollars for the golden eagle that's from stew from victor harbour um and that's
Speaker 17okay i was just asking the question do you do you back her at a dollar twenty i'm not a punter so i don't know but do people launch into her at a dollar twenty now we can this is a good new set
Speaker 2wayne's world with the questions coming at wayne i like this this could be our new segment for the means test someone tell wayne it's not manipulation there is no requirement for the fiend to be a specific race number on that day plus having the fiend earlier might get a few stragglers who enjoyed their grand final day but too much at the track earlier in the day, Wayne.
Speaker 17You would never, ever move the fee and stakes, and we'd never talk about this other than having two old horses wanting the track better than worse. You know what? As a participant, it is annoying that it doesn't always work the way you want it to from the point of view of having it's too wet, it's too dry. It's an outdoor sport, and that's what we have to put up with. But if they were going to move the fee in the race one to try and make it better for Jenny and Brightside, that is fair manipulation. I don't care what anyone says. Do I want to see Jenny race and win? Of course I do. Do I want to see Brightside race and win? 100%. Who doesn't? It's a no-brainer. No one wants those horses.
Speaker 2For me, it's a no-brainer.
Speaker 17No, it might be a no-brainer, but it just sets a bad precedence. And what about the other runners in that race? I mean, at the end of the day, there's plenty of great horses over the years that haven't handled a wet track. And have to be scratched. And that's just the way it is. And there's plenty of great horses that actually like the wet and vice versa. So we haven't had these comments very often, but obviously we're at the start of the spring. We've had some really warm weather in Melbourne and Sydney. And, you know, you can see things starting to dry off. So maybe it's going to be a dry summer. That's what they are predicting. But we also quickly, Gareth, we need to get the racing bodies to change these track ratings because it doesn't work. The numbers. Let's change it to the old-fashioned good and soft and yielding instead of dead and heavy. And let's just move it around a little bit. And it'll take the threes and fours and numbers because they're just too close between a four and a three. It's either good or it's not. It's either soft or it's not.
Speaker 2Has everyone given up on Cosmic Crusader? I was thinking it was an excellent run given he was 1,400, 1,800 off three weeks. Should be winning next year around. That's from Ian. That's a good point, Ian. I don't think anyone's giving up on Cosmic Crusader. Interesting to see where he goes next. Autumn Globe, we've mentioned that. Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker 17Yeah, I thought his run was okay. I thought his run was okay. I thought he was there to win on Saturday. And Pikey did say that in hindsight he was probably too close. And does that make a difference? Yeah, some horses it actually does. But then were they riding more towards the way they thought the track was going to be with the rail at 11? But, yeah, you know, look, he was up early in the early part of the spring ready to rock, and I thought he'd be rock hard fit. I thought it was his chance on Saturday.
Speaker 2Disgusting track, Caulfield. Another way of pun is copying it. If we follow the tipping panel from 5 a.m. on Saturday morning, getting race patterns tracked 30 minutes before the meeting, the rail has moved. Obviously, the game plan changed regarding the patterns, et cetera, and we can't even cancel our bets. It's a disgrace. That's from Peter from WA. What else?
Speaker 17Well, that's the problem that you have when it happens. If it's rain effect, well, then you can't help that because that's nature. But this wasn't rain effected, so we've spoken about it plenty. But it deserved it. But you know what? Pete from Perth, he's right.
Speaker 2If Chris Waller trained Bangkok Hottie, I'm guessing she would be odds on every start. What an underrated horse. Yeah, she was very good once again. David Payne, he's a very good trainer. He's proven that all around the world. And he's got another beauty there. Hey, guys, great means test this morning. I look forward to it every week. We appreciate that. Melbourne Cups. Aren't won by great horses. Usually won by the best handicap runner on the up. It is a handicap after all, Wayne.
Speaker 17Yeah, it is. And for a while there, you had horses like Saintly and, you know, very elegant was she's top of the tree as well. So in theory, you had, there's two types of horses that run in the Melbourne Cup and win, aren't they? They're the Coxblade horses that go on or of that calibre, or they were just the great handicappers. But as I've said many a time, we're not breeding staying horses anymore in this country. And there's very, very few. We're very, very few and far between, but I suppose we've not many Europeans coming out this year. We're going to have another great Aussie story, which will be a, which I hope an Aussie horse and connection wins it because it'll be a
Speaker 2better story. I think it's going to be hard to beat Joseph O'Brien. He might have 10 runners in the cup. Wayne, I reckon he'll have between. Yeah. Well, that's yeah. I reckon between five and eight, I reckon.
Speaker 17Yeah. Is that what, is that what we want? I suppose at the end of the day, he's got, he's going to get through all the scans and everything like that. So he's entitled to do it. It's a, it's an open, open race for anyone around the world to nominate. So for the people to say that's too many, well, there's no, there's no right or wrong number. And if he wants to travel from the other side of the world to come out here, well, good on him. And as one thing we know, how many times have they come with their great horse and you know, people's great horse doesn't win, but their second stringer runs an almighty race and runs a place in the cup. That's happened many a time.
Speaker 2Joseph O'Brien's unique in a way, because a lot of the big Australian owners are giving him horses, because I know that he could win a Melbourne company and he likes to come here for a Melbourne company understands where I'll be. And like JP McMahon, it's one of the biggest owners in world racing, especially in Ireland and the UK. Obviously he's, he's the biggest owner and jumps racing over there. He wants to win a Melbourne cup. So he gives goody two shoes to Joseph and says, go and win me a cup. So he's got a lot of owners that want to win a Melbourne cup that give him the horse. And so he's targeted a lot of his, his barn for the great race. So yeah, you can't knock him for that. A few others coming through. It's now no longer a proper handicap race. And this change will actually stop horses accepting half yours. There was absolutely no chance in a Melbourne cup with 59. The Fiend stakes was raised for in 2024 when Jenny won. So that's from Michael. Chris has done some good patch up jobs on Buckaroo the last couple of years. So please don't send him there again. Buckaroo won't be going to a Melbourne cup. Question. For Johnny. We asked him about the ride there on Gringotts. If one of the top jockeys have ridden Marzoo Wayne, would you be raving about a great ride? Rock on Rachel. One of the most underrated riders there. That's from Georgie from Tassie.
Speaker 17Yeah, no, no doubt. Yeah. That was a, was a, was a perfect ride. You jump your lead, you dictate terms. There's no, there's no excuses, is there? So, you know, he, he did a two, he did a super, super job. But to be fair, if you look at it in, in, in, in its entirety, John Lee Starr should have won. But you know what? You look at most big races, most big races, you go and watch the replay of every horse. There's always one, two, three horses that were desperately unlucky that just didn't have the right running transit. But it's a horse race, isn't it?
Speaker 2Yeah. Mr. Brightside and Pride of Jenny are well past their best. Us punters have moved on. I think it's time Gareth and you guys should as well. Fair enough.
Speaker 17When, when Pride of Jenny won, it was a field of four, wasn't it? It was a field of four. Yeah, it was Mr. Brightside.
Speaker 2Was it or was it not a great? Treasure of the moment. Antino. Antino and Pride of Jenny.
Speaker 17Wasn't, wasn't it an absolute belting race?
Speaker 2It was a great race. I remember we backed Antino in the oil markets because I did my calculations thinking there might be only three in the race. Anyway, guess what? Antino came fourth. Are you a good punter, Gareth? Terrible. I'm as good as you because obviously I'm a better punter than you, Wayne, because obviously are the quaddie legs together? Like that'll do me. Unbelievable. Can you please? I don't, I don't, I don't take the quaddie. I don't take the quaddie. Can you please?
Speaker 17No, no. Look, I would very rarely bet.
Speaker 2Can you please confirm if the rumor is true about whether or not this French two-year-old Philly prime time Emmy is coming for the Everest? No, Dan, she's not coming to the Everest, but she's pretty good. I still remember Saran being scratched off a track upgrade at Bendigo in June. Hi, G. This morning you interviewed Joe Pride. Did he say if Charles Wolfe is going to the Cox Plate or King Charles? I'm hoping the Cox Plate is I've had a fixed odds bet. Well, Rick, he didn't rule out the Cox Plate, but he's definitely going to the King Charles and then he'll, he'll weigh up whether he's ready to back up to go to a Cox Plate, but we'll definitely see him in Melbourne. He'll be in the champion stakes or the champion's mile on champion's day. You don't go to 2000 meters with she's alibi and drop back to 1500 meters at Rose Hill. Well, I think Peter Moody knows what he's doing, Wayne.
Speaker 17Yeah, I, I, I don't, I don't think that's an issue. People always think, you know, but as I said before, it probably isn't the right path. And would Peter want to do that? Well, he, he probably has to do it. Other than, other than go to Sydney. So at the end of the day, running her over 2000 meters, when she's third up, going to see whether she runs 2000 is not going to be a negative. And then she's got to run three weeks later over the 1500. And you know what, from racing's point of view, let's hope she wins the, the might and power. Let's hope she wins the, uh, the fifth, the big race in, uh, in Sydney to give it more kudos and more credibility.
Speaker 2Morning lads. Love these chats with Wayne. Speaks a lot of sense and racing. Easy to understand the 1% is happy punting. That's from Cyril. Fancy that. Um, John's horses win two races and the track is all good. Hats off to the MRC. Please surely a little bit embarrassing for the MRC. What did the chaps think about the Melbourne cup? Did you really, Wayne? Why didn't you say it when he was here? Yes. Weak.
Speaker 17Oh, because I was going, oh, when am I have a week and never take a step back against something? Come on, Garrett. Johnny Johnny's telling everyone he's going to trifecta everybody. Caulfield car. He might be right. And he, and he might, he might be right, but I'll tell you what, I don't like the rail at 11 for Jimmy star, but I do like Jimmy star Manicato 1200 with blinkers on the people that back Jimmy star first up. I didn't think there was a great race for him first up, but I do like him in the Manicato, uh, this Saturday, but I wouldn't bet until you see how the track is racing and playing. So the rails going out that far, it might be a dynamite leaders track.
Speaker 2Out of all the track walkers, anyone bring attention to the stewards or track staff that we could have a problem. Mark Hunter. Maddie Welsh, Brett Serafa, all walked it but chicken's about unsafe um but all did say the inside was off yeah um i think they've all explained what they saw there when they walked the track i think peter moody is undecided is what he is doing that's not a good sign no he's he's pretty adamant now that he's going to go to the mountain power and then he's going to go to the golden eagle well said way in the industry is bigger than one horse spiros from sale read the melbourne cup weight weights need to remember jockeys weigh out one kilo more to allow the vessel horse with 58 is carrying 59 so i can see where waller is coming from um which is just just on just just just on just on that gareth yeah can
Speaker 17we actually can we actually go to go to the industry you're you're the you're the man to the industry why do we actually bs and lie what we put out there and we are lying because we are you know and and and whoever that sent the text in is is 100 right whatever whatever comes out in the form guide is a kilo is a kilo different to what they weigh out in so why don't we just accept that and we just say that the weight is is what it is so if you've got 59 the jockey's weighing out 60 kilos i mean i don't know why we i mean we we can go the other way and give them two kilos concession and make it say 58 but i mean we're trying for transparency but that's one thing that i've always never really liked because people always say you're giving the horse too much weight is is it going to stop them from uh from racing and winning that's that that would be one of the things one of the reasons why but it's a national rule and we all do it but i don't think it's right
Speaker 2which is bigger the whinge fest at low cut weights when j mac couldn't ride on the whinge fest with horses i think he's calling chris waller the whinge fest being allocated huge weights is what has become a quality handicap instead of a true handicap there you go um boys mccabee dear didn't carry that much after she won it twice already but different circumstances you can't it's different because the handicap can only handicap the horses in front of the horse and in front of him hi gents if alibi strolls in the mountain power no no no no that's not that's not
Speaker 17quite true hang on hang on hang on all you ever hear these handicappers go on about is history says this two years ago this two years ago that handicappers love saying all that stuff you're right garrett they should be handicapping what's there in front of you and just taking a line but anytime there's a re they've always got a reason it always goes oh back in 1997 this happened with saintly in 2007 this happened with mccabee and you know i mean they've they've always got a reason i mean they've always they've always got a reason why i thought handicapping was supposed to put every horse in the same race and then you want them all up to let them try and run across the equal that was the whole idea of a of a handicap wasn't it hi gents if alibi strolls in the mind
Speaker 2power like expected i can't believe they're not going to the cocks plate they say next year but you know what she could be injured and not race again next year that's from the form doctor but you got a 10 million dollar race form doctor you've got to go there against your own age group yes
Speaker 17do you know what the other thing is though gareth what if that actually happened what if that actually happened and she bolted the 2000 meters and all of a sudden connections went well you know what maybe we'll just stay in uh in in in melbourne and run in the cocks plate maybe that's in the back of back of their mind if she's dominant and ran through the line and just you know became the next sun lines hypothetically uh you know what why why wouldn't they consider it i mean i know they're already saying that they're going up there for that race but gee whiz if she won and won well they might change their mind i know but you don't like um looking after just the one horse but
Speaker 2maybe they could have come together race victoria with the sponsor like they do with sports but i think in sydney regarding the sprinters and say all right then if you can win three weight for age group ones over the middle trip like a maccabi diva might power into a cocks plate and then into a champion's mile champion stakes will give you an extra three million
Speaker 17million then she might have stayed well you have to i don't know that answer because it all it all gets back to turnover and if she's an alibi state here and ran the cocks plate is that is that going to help turnover obviously it will but to what extent that you're offering big kickers for these uh for these horses to stay i mean melbourne v sydney it's uh i've said it a million times there's coles versus woolworths and you've got a choice you can go one or you can go the other and peter's made his choice to stay in melbourne not to go back to sydney and run in the the king charles so he's doing what he thinks right for his horse and i think bloody good on him all right
Speaker 2then way now tell me this um well done with that horse who won there at newcastle a dollar 20 federalist well done a lot of texas text messages coming through there well he was he was probably
Speaker 17nearly the best maidener in the country so um bring on the melbourne he carried 60 he carried 62 which was actually 63 so he carried 63 kilos to victory in a maiden but um in melbourne they're all set weights so you know he's got a lot of weight so he's got a lot of weight so he's got a lot of weight you know on your age and sex what weight you're going to get whereas in sydney most of them are handicaps i think it's 50 50 handicaps but there's not many in the metropolitan slash provincial area that are are set weights i wish sydney did it more but no he did a really really good job federalist and he's been a little bit of an enigma but same thing and that's not his fault he's uh he's had a couple of poor rides and a couple of things that didn't go right for him but one thing that has been a positive is that he jumps and he's been jumping well and cleanly whereas in sydney he's had a lot of reps he'd been out in the back and slow away but i was pretty happy when he jumped and jumped cleanly on thursday something for the battlers um it's a long way away but if he runs newcastle saturday a horse i had in melbourne called hillbilly elegy gee looks amazing he is in since john and michael have had him he's improved about four lengths i reckon look at him but that doesn't surprise me probably doesn't surprise you either garrett no it does you're doing a wonderful
Speaker 2job there you had a few winnings in melbourne during the week at a big price wayne so um you're time as always we got through most of the questions so there you go thank you thank you wayne have a good week yes we'll see you next week there's wayne hawks there 28 minutes past 11 we'll break down belmont with peter anthonis next
Speaker 1join the conversation text us on 049736736 live across australia this is giddy up with gareth hall it's now time for the monday breakdown with pete anthonis
Speaker 22morning to you gareth morning to everyone at home yes um how was your weekend uh you know not too bad caulfield was great it was t-shirt and shorts weather you would have been proud of me there and hanging around caulfield uh we had just a meeting at belmont i think it's fair to say but there was some you know really nice performance here at cowgirl yesterday i think terry obviously touched on the jester's son on friday and we had a really good time with him spoke about that horse teeing off with uh opportunistic in their previous run and once again they paired off a fascinating betting drift on opportunistic i think he went from odds on to almost three dollars there late and uh the stable mate and lillian was backed right in but uh in the end it was opportunistic and the jester's son with a really nice ride from zephan johnson porter so credit to the team there they got a really well deserved uh feature race
Speaker 2victory there in calgoorlie yeah it was a great story wasn't it um helen harding so we'll get helen on there tomorrow i reckon it's a terrific story and uh yeah job well done there what did you make of caulfield did you back a winner
Speaker 22i did actually i had a really good day isn't it funny how when you have a really good day g it doesn't matter what the track or what happened pre-race yes it was a minor you know minor disappointment i didn't get really touched track played perfectly you know it just it's just funny isn't it um so no had a really good day um cosmic crusader it's funny that willie pike basically said he settled too close because the data actually completely agrees with that it's almost an identical figure to what he produced in norvally stakes when he basically was able to clear out with watch me rock but on that occasion he was another two to three lengths off them obviously a bigger field there on the weekend he just basically used the horse up a little bit early just to settle that bit closer but of course lindemann was over racing he wasn't comfortable out there in front and in the end it was the horse off his back in birdman who was able to run him over so i think he's basically gone really well to be honest i know people are probably a little bit disappointed but his figure is almost identical to his pb at ascot birdman i think people forget but he's had some really strong betting moves for him over the journey the australian cup earlier this year gee he was like 350 into 250 in a a really good field um and on this occasion there was no money for him there on saturday but basically all those little factors that we've seen over the last few years he's a really well conditioned horse in fast tempo races and he got the right race there on the weekend so yeah i mean betting it's and doing the form it's all part of his great puzzles that we're constantly trying to figure out what's going on with him so i think it's a really good thing that we've seen over the last few years so i think it's a really good thing that we've seen over the last few years that we're constantly going back and re-evaluating so yeah it was a really nice day at caulfield yeah well said what
Speaker 2about what horses are you following out of that meeting at belmont
Speaker 22i think there's two in both in race seven now uh pistone uh i hope that's how you're pronouncing it otherwise i've almost said something inappropriate uh look didn't get an ideal race shape i they the horse went very slowly that's not what we saw on debut when the horse had an even tempo was able to string them out i know it's obviously a maiden up into a handicap so it's completely different class of opposition but i still think there's more under the hood for this horse and i respect the betting move for it on that occasion and i'm also following sosi got out of the same race it's the tempo they went up front she could not win um she looks absolutely ready to win a race she just needs to draw a gate or a nice map where she's got speed up front and she can finish off so i think they're the two to follow out of belmont that's for sure okay then um i'm going to take a look at the last race and see if there's anything else we can do about it but i'm going to
Speaker 2take a look at the next race and see if there's anything else we can do about it but i'm going to take a look at the next race and see if there's anything else we can do about it but i'm going to take a look at the next race and see if there's anything else we can do about it but
Speaker 22i'm not sure if uh nikimoto sort of half lost the race early in terms of not crossing pin deep because if she crosses pin deep that means the winner pingers is three-back defense yes exactly um but look again another fascinating betting move pin deep was all the market wanted straight as soon as it hit mbls straight in the favoritism and was never looking like drifting again late um that meant everything else drifted out the the gate to a certain extent it's just there's a few fascinating betting moves at the moment in these markets gee just seemingly where there's no real opposition otherwise but we are getting towards the end of the belmont season we've said that a lot so you just need to take these races and put them together one at a time but not long to go until the calgoorlie round and then back to ascot and
Speaker 2away we go yeah and as you pointed out the boulder cup won by the jester's son felon hardy sp480 opportunistic out to 250 um and then lillian as you point out was well supported the other horse in the cerise and white it finished fifth satino for mickey grantham he was third with that galloper so yeah the jester's son the biggest victory in helen harding's career um so yeah well done to everybody involved it was a good story there on saturday
Speaker 22or sunday i should say yeah it absolutely was and it sets up for a really nice uh calgoorlie cup as well there's going to be some metro horses there but jester's son's in such good form at the moment you wouldn't ride him off with the right uh with the right run and the right barrier good on you
Speaker 2pete love your work mate cheers g there's peter anthonis we'll take a break we'll come back and we'll break down that meeting on the gold coast there on saturday
Speaker 1join the conversation text us on oh four double nine seven three six seven three six live across australia this is giddy up with gareth hall welcome back to giddy up time to break down
Speaker 2what happened there at uh the gold coast on saturday they had some good me i had two good meetings there in queensland the second meeting was at eagle farm which is a little bit weird for the punters to try and work out chriso when you've got the second meeting at headquarters there um but anyway what'd you make of that
Speaker 23gold coast meeting yeah it was good uh we got to a good three track uh later in the day which i always love when we have these dry tracks and uh the racing was good uh the track played perfectly even i thought and uh some good performances obviously uh the uh the pink ribbon cup was won by uh rate notice uh which was good for uh robbie dolan and emma bouchard so good luck to them they did very well there uh some other wins on the day precise star of course winning his falling straight race yeah he did fall in didn't he we all thought the danger was going to be north pole who was scratched at the gates so therefore precise star started a dollar 26 favorite and was beaten as you said and i was won by an eyelash over naval seal it made it very interesting uh as for uh riding uh riding results there your belly youngberry got two robbie dolan got two cj graham got two uh three for tony golan two for jeff dunn tony golan got another couple at uh at eagle farm as well and ben thompson rode four weeks ago and he did well and he did well and he did well at eagle farm so i've mixed the black bookers up a little bit this week if that's all right
Speaker 2well warby won so everyone has a everyone that gives hope for a lot of horses out there
Speaker 23yeah it gives hope for that other thing that so we won't talk about captain maverick yeah he just gets uh nailed all the time yeah he uh he had every chance there i'm alone he gave him a 15 out of 10 and he still couldn't get past demarco late so he is a worry uh black bookers race two i'm not here trained by chris and cory munce talia fenland took the ride good effort because sat up on the speed and they went pretty hard in this race set it up for we only chevy to get home over the top of them but gee i thought this one stuck on willie really well only other start was in a maiden at bow desert won that and i said i like the way that uh stuck on with the speed on up front so i'm not here the one to follow out of the gold coast at uh eagle farm now this is a good one i reckon race two race two was a maiden played over 1200 meters i tipped imminent appeal who ran second six dollars so that was good happy with that and i'd say continue to follow imminent appeal however the horse that ran fourth the emergency bound for moscow trained by rob heathcote ridden by sienna grimmer uh very good run luckless debut that was a couple of weeks ago ran into a brick wall in the straight was 41 here on saturday and ran on really well late i think there is a winning store for bound for moscow going forward so it definitely goes in the black book and the other one of course is the one we spoke about saturday morning graffich who won really well first start yeah first start for tony golan uh i thought stuck it out really well felt the pressure late wanted to hang out a bit but gee they went hard in that race and it was the only one of the horses near the lead that actually stayed on so i thought was quite strong to the line and that run at beanstow was a really good one so it is a definite horse on the up yeah
Speaker 2it paid well in the end like there was good pushes from you and i think the stable were keen and um yeah and ang jones rode it like a good thing just barged away out of that pocket and i'm
Speaker 23away it went yeah gate one certainly a big help there that was ang jones's first win back since her layoff with her injury yeah so well done to her yeah got out to near enough to uh near enough to four dollars in some areas which was a bit of a surprise but uh a pleasant one gareth i'm enjoying
Speaker 2queensland at the moment because you got santa green went to eagle farm on saturday you've had a couple of victoria's better apprentices that they're getting more opportunity in queensland so there's trainers that have seen like bella youngberry do what she's been able to do and using the claims these days in brisbane off their peak racing um season there in queensland so it'll be interesting to see how it all unfolds there in the summer with a few of those interstate apprentices maybe coming to brisbane with more of an opportunity there yeah especially in in the
Speaker 23springtime where there's not many opportunities for them down south i mean emily posman's up here she's doing really well uh anna ropa was here i think she went back to sydney but she's she's up here with uh tony golland for a few months and and yeah they're just uh thick and fast up here at the moment they're all riding very very well so it's a pleasure to have them uh in the state good on
Speaker 2you brother thanks for that thanks gareth you have a good day same to you this chris nelson jane ivill will join me next to break down a big weekend of racing there in new zealand
Speaker 1join the conversation text us on 0 4 9 7 3 6 7 3 6 live across australia this is giddy up with gareth hall
Speaker 2welcome back to giddy up it's 44 minutes past 11 you can wake up with new zealand racing kick your day off with a kiwi bet what's gambling really costing you for free and confidential support visit gamblinghelponline.org.au well it was christmas for the victorians there in new zealand across the weekend as i say hello to you jane thanks for joining us jane ivel yeah no problem well done too with the freemantle dockers you won't win this weekend but congratulations christmas was great for me for paul pruska i thought there on sunday
Speaker 24yeah terrific um the horse actually won quite nicely in the end considering he really mixed his jumps going around the course at tiara so he took out uh the great new zealand steeplechase which is probably the prestige race in new zealand in terms of our steeplechases um but look daryl corner junior knows the horse well and he put him into the race at the right time it was a really patient race and he was really patient and he was really patient and he was really proud um and he prevailed to actually win quite nicely in the end albeit uh his jumping wasn't perfect particularly on the first couple of laps but he got himself sorted out and he won the race and he's been an interesting um horse i think for paul pruska in terms of the fact that he was actually bought as a jumper and he's taken him a really long time to get him there but look his opening jump season has looked really promising uh now that he's headed out to new zealand and picked up one of our prestige jumpers and he's been an interesting horse i think for paul pruska
Speaker 2and on the flat there on saturday knockoff um he flew down the outside to win the feature race
Speaker 24the metric mile there at trentham on saturday it was a great ride uh by leah heme to take out um the feature race uh at trentham she had an outside barrier which i think probably concerned her leading up to the meeting but they got a lot of rain there on the thursday night and it was a very very heavy trentham track and she was very smart in the way she rode the horse had him off the rail the entire time um dictated terms so it meant that when she came into the straight she had the ability to navigate into the best part of the track and she put the pressure on really early so she took off on the horse early she put the pressure on the rest of the field and um she executed it perfectly it's quite a nice story he's a family horse and um you know they've been incredibly patient with him he's always shown a little bit of ability but he's a really lightly raced seven-year-old and he's had 19 starts now for the six wins so they've been really patient with him and he's having a really good season this season i'm not really sure what their options are next because there is a horse that likes a bit of cut in the ground so they're going to need a wet spring in new zealand for him to continue to progress but um he's certainly been a horse that's done a great job for them and he picked up his first stakes victory at the weekend there were some
Speaker 2good performances with the three-year-olds at our lease
Speaker 24there was some really nice three-year-old performances at ellerslie uh spellbound he was uh a gallop that i thought would go really well he drifted in the market leading into the run i'm not really sure why but he was the horse with experience and he trialed up really nicely and he got the run of the race and duly saluted they did back the stable mate uh sure breeze was her name a fully out-of-the-box the same stable she was a bit unlucky she um sort of awkwardly away got back and then was held up in the straight so she's probably the black booker out of the race considering the market came for her late uh but spellbound um yeah everything went perfectly for him and he was able to salute and look system of play he's a really interesting colt out of the tiakau stable he's headed towards the 2000 guineas he's unbeaten now two from two uh he stepped out at 1400 meters first up up on saturday so i imagine he's going to take a lot of improvement out of that run so he's certainly one to follow that paid a little bit of money for him out of the ready to run sales i think about 480 000 um but he's a good type and he's certainly delivered on the track thus far i'm sure we'll probably see him in stakes grade next start as he makes his way down to rickerton
Speaker 2tell me about um sophia nolan and hannah alting who combined their the training partnership because they had a good winner in golden wings
Speaker 24there on saturday at ellerslie they did they had a double there and they also had a winner during the week they're only a really small stable two swedish sisters okay who came out to new zealand many years ago and they both did a lot of work for murray baker sophia um actually traveled with mongolian khan and looked after him as his strapper when uh he came over to australia for his cups campaign when he took out the caulfield cup so uh they both spent time with murray baker so they learned from the best in new zealand uh they've teamed up together in partnership and they're doing a really great job and they've got a nice horse on their hands in golden wings he was fresh up at the weekend and he won really impressively and i know they've got some targets coming up for him they're going to go to a stakes race on the last day of the hawks bay carnival and they're even maybe looking ahead to trentham they they're hoping that they can get him into a group one down there so he's a sprinter that's worth keeping an eye on he's really well bred by super set out of the group one winning mirror and xanadu and um they've done a great job with him they've been patient he hasn't been the easiest horse in terms of his mental maturity but hopefully things click for him this campaign i think we'll see him
Speaker 2compete at a pretty good level as a sprinter and a proud day for new zealand with blind raised winning by ace high out of away cruising so um a good result for a new zealand bred horse who might be a major play obviously in the guineas but even a cox plate for trent boston and natalie well he
Speaker 24he he was a pretty astute purchase i think they only paid about 70 000 for him bred by the oak stud um and look he was a winner on saturday that was quite close to me because his grand dam was change, the mare that I travelled with and looked after in New Zealand. So whenever I see descendants of her family go around on the racetrack, I'm pretty happy. She's already had one daughter produce Storm Boy and this is a separate daughter that's now produced Blind Ray. So that next
Speaker 2generation is going pretty well. All right, then I know you're a docker fan, a Kiwi that's a docker fan that I can't quite work out, but hopefully you run second on the weekend, Jane, but we wish you the best of luck and we'll catch up with you on Friday, of course. Yes, you will. Brad's actually
Speaker 24off to the final. It's Luke's fifth birthday on Saturday. So I've decided I'm going to stay at home with him on his birthday. But Brad's off to the final. So it's pretty exciting. I mean, I am a fan by association through Brad, but he's followed them for over a decade. So it's pretty big for him, for them to make the grand final. Yeah. So we wish Brad Taylor,
Speaker 2of course, the racing manager for Sam Friedman and your wonderful husband, the best of luck there with the dockers. Good on you, Jane. Thanks for that. Thanks. See ya. There's Jane Ivel there. The simply sensational performance of the week, $100 Ribera's Port Melbourne restaurant voucher. There was plenty to choose from,
Speaker 25Pauli Sebastiani. There were plenty, but we're going to stick with the New Zealand flavor there. And you mentioned it was Christmas over in Toronto. I like that. Straight off the top at 20 past eight, Jamie sent this through. G'day, Gareth. My performance of the week goes to Paul Pruska and his horse Christmas at Tearoa yesterday in race four. It was a 6,200 meter steeplechase on a heavy track. Christmas settled in the back half of the field. They ran three laps of the track. There were no falls in the race, just a fantastic spectacle to watch. Christmas was too strong. So congratulations to Jamie. You are the winner of our Ribera's
Speaker 2voucher this week. Good on you, Jamie. Well done. Time to wrap up, giddy up. Thanks to the little Llydale Instant Lawn, Australian family-owned quality turf delivered on time every time our roots run deep. Louis Clifton, hello to you. G'day, Gareth. I'm just having a look. It was a great night of harness racing there on Saturday. There was some interesting results, some great human interest stories as well. We'll probably touch on them tomorrow. Facing the breeze tomorrow. Yes. Catch a wave, bounce back. He's been a bit of an enigma himself, but he's won over $2 million in the sport of harness racing, which is some achievement. He won the free-for-all back into the winner's circle. We had the art of success defending our girl, Wicked Confession. Miss Ari was second, but the art of success, what a mare she is. Fox Dan caused a bit of an upset as Emma Stewart bringed up the big double there, taking out another group one as she continued on her dominance of these VicBread races. Sam Nehan was a great story in the Trotters four-year-old Entires and Geldings final at 100-1 for the Pace family, Blake and Darren. A ripper story.
Speaker 25How good was her vision, Gareth? Did you see it on social media? Yes. The family and owners celebrating post-race. It was brilliant.
Speaker 2Yeah. We might get the Pace family on tomorrow. And there was a few other good stories too. Of course, rocking with the attitude. He was a star trotter. She was too good in the free-for-all. And Gatesy's gem's a good horse for Glenn Hunter. He's got her flying. And she took out the mare's group one trotting final.
Speaker 26Plenty to talk about tomorrow.
Speaker 2What have you made of today's show?
Speaker 26Bit all over the shop. We're all the producer. Wayne Hawks stuck in traffic, caused a bit of a setback, but we got there in the end. I thought it's been good. It's always good. The means test, strong opinions. Wayne enjoyed the last 20, I reckon, on his own. By himself. Yeah, he loved it. He had all the spotlight. Who's winning the Brownlow? Look, I don't think anyone can beat him. Paulie and I were just looking at a couple of markets of finding an edge. Yeah, how do we find an edge, boys? Well, Paulie's had a bit of luck in the past to have of picking who gets the three votes in a certain game. Yeah, the markets might've missed it. And he reckons he's found one this year.
Speaker 25Take it away, Paulie. It might pertain to a friend of the gentleman who's in studio with us here. Could be some bias. S. Walsh. Sam Walsh. Yes. So Carlton defeated the GWS Giants back in round 15.
Speaker 2Yes.
Speaker 25And it looks like it's going to be between Walsh and Kripper. And they are both proven poll getters. But Walsh kicked a very important goal at three-quarter time, which I just think the umpires are going to really hone in and look at. What round's this? This is round 15. He's $2. And 75 cents. He's the second favorite with bet 365. I think he should be the odds-on favorite for that game. In my estimation, he was a clear best on ground. He kicked a very important goal. And he was in the purview of the umpires for a lot of that game. And the Quinella, Nick Dacos and Marcus Bontempale to run the Quinella. What price is that? $2.35. You can maybe double them up in a multi. You'll get about six to one. There you go.
Speaker 26Louie? My little one, and I don't know. I don't probably watch enough of Port Adelaide, so I probably shouldn't be. Butters. Should Butters, he's $2.30, I think. And Horne-Francis is like $1.70 for most Port Adelaide.
Speaker 2Butters is going to be about four or five lengths in front before he gets injured.
Speaker 26Well, but do you think he would have won? Oh, I don't know. But would he have won the best in Ferris if he didn't say he was leaving? Do you reckon he would have won the best in Ferris? Well, has the best in Ferris been done? Horne-Francis won the best in Ferris. Just. Just pipped Butters at the end. So I reckon that might be a bet at $2.30 or whatever it is. Zach Butters to win Port Adelaide's, um, well, have the most votes for Port Adelaide tonight.
Speaker 2There you go. It's, there's always so many different options, isn't there? Like, um.
Speaker 25You can overanalyze it. Yeah. You can really, really overanalyze it. We were just discussing the granny this weekend. People are looking for prop bets and whatnot. Mate, you just back Will Ashcroft to win the Norm Smith. Does Lockie Neal play? Of course he does.
Speaker 26He'll get off. What price is he to not play? I don't know. I don't know. There was a little bit in it, but I think he'll get off. Beautiful.
Speaker 2So if he plays, the Lions are $1.65. The Dockers $2.25 with bet $3.65. Like, the Dockers have been the best team all year. Have they? Well, the latter said so. Well, yeah.
Speaker 26Home and away, yes. But it.
Speaker 2The problem is, it's sort of like our big key defenders. Gallup's such an important player back. Um, Darcy Gardner plays better on a tall.
Speaker 25Stressless, mate.
Speaker 2Harris Andrews.
Speaker 26Was it the best game you've seen?
Speaker 2Unbelievable. I couldn't watch the last quarter. I can't believe you didn't go.
Speaker 26I cannot believe you didn't go. I couldn't watch the last quarter.
Speaker 2I haven't had a dart for a while. I had three in about five minutes as I went outside when I was watching it.
Speaker 25Good vision of you on the socials as well, Gareth.
Speaker 2Demi did a fantastic job. There's no better feeling than when your team wins. It was unbelievable. And the devastation when they're like, when are we going to get beaten? I was like heartbroken.
Speaker 25What was better, that or Angel Capital?
Speaker 2Probably Brisbane Lions, clearly.
Speaker 25Not for Mark, aren't I? Yeah.
Speaker 2Good on you, boys. Thank you. Thanks, Gareth. Louis and Paulie done a wonderful job along with Shea. Thanks for your company on Giddy Up. If you missed any of our segments, or interviews, just subscribe to Giddy Up with Gareth or with your local podcast subscriber. Have a great day.
