Speaker 3purton's opted to get onto her back there on kaying rising he's much further back than expected into the straight savvy holly in front tempted she's showing the desire she's showing the desire she's showing the desire she's showing the desire she takes the gap and she's going after savvy holly they beat up blue door now kaying rising gang ending with his work and headwall down the outside tempters drawn clear by two kaying rising and headwall they're trying hard tempted two lengths clear from kaying rising jolly star late tempted clings on and she won the everest tempted beat kaying rising you could hear the rule from
Speaker 2around the country there's some great um watching on social media from caulfield to randwick when um those wonderful gallopers down that straight at randwick um fought out that race and tempted was too good for the champ kaying rising chad scofield joins us here on giddy up good morning chad congratulations mate hi
Speaker 4gareth yeah thank you very much it was amazing day has
Speaker 2it sunk in yet yeah it
Speaker 4has it's um it's been uh it was a busy day at the races on saturday obviously you win the everest but then you can't really sort of enjoy it that much because you you straight into the silver eagle and then the massive king charles but um yeah we're able to sort of have a bit of a celebration yesterday with a few friends so yeah it
Speaker 2was good we'll talk about char wolf in just a moment he's a strong possibility of heading to the cox plate i think he's nearly been confirmed to go to cox plate on saturday but talk us through the race um barry number one were you confident with barry number one before the
Speaker 4race to be honest i was i liked it i mean if she had have drawn wide say 10 11 12 it would have been horrible because she is a horse with a pattern who is to get back and run on and um from barrier one it just enabled me to sort of jump and let her be where she wanted rather than have to bring it back just to find cover um and i certainly made the most of the barrier i've jumped her out and it's probably the first time i've ever given her a squeeze out the gates and asked her to show pace and be prominent i normally just sort of let her drift back and relax but um i used her up a bit early and just banked on her quality late and she never let me down were
Speaker 2you surprised with everyone going forward in the early part well not really
Speaker 4i mean kaiying rising is a dollar dollar 10 favorite so we weren't going to make it easy for him yeah and i think me just punching up on the rail just just added to that pressure and in the end it almost forced zach purton to have to come back to find his cover and he ended up where he ended up yeah
Speaker 2um when did you think well i've nearly got him where i want him to get get him and i'm all of a sudden um you're the horse to
Speaker 4beat pretty early on i mean i i must be honest i anticipated he'd jump a length in front and be way too quick for blue door and lead quite comfortably that's that's how i saw it but it definitely wasn't the case savvy haley got a flyer um i jumped very quick myself but um we went pretty i felt like the pace was pretty good the pace was very quick early um but he wasn't there and i knew that and once the race sort of settled down and i was traveling in the box seat i was i was very
Speaker 2happy yeah um she's an amazing mare she just keeps on getting better with that turn of
Speaker 4foot she certainly is um i only started riding her last prep as a three-year-old um she had a light autumn and she was extremely good but um she's really gone to a new level with that spell and and this is a really good race preparation um i thought she was just so dynamic and brilliant first up in the thousand meter race and she improved off that and second up she was even better and probably her best win i thought until yesterday where she peaked again so um she is improving and she's obviously in in the care of the right camp and they've done such a good job to sort of manage and and help sort of extract the
Speaker 2best out of her can char wolf win a cox plate on saturday i'm very happy
Speaker 4he's going because i believe he can um he hasn't won a race this preparation which is frustrating because he's absolutely flying um hasn't quite had a a race sort of shaped the way he wants it you know he wants to sort of get get some speed on and and have a bit of a high pressure race and we haven't found one of those as prep yet but even in the races that aren't suitable to him he's running extremely well and um he deserves he deserves another big win under his belt we've seen
Speaker 2him dominant in a high pressure 1600 meter race he's he's going to get a high pressure 2000 meter race with light infantry man and land legend involved in this year's cox plate will that suit him stepping up an extra 400 meters
Speaker 4i think so yes um he's he's an extremely good miler but he over 2000 now peak fitness i think it's i think he's ready for that and um he's definitely got the stamina you know you're running second in the derby as a three-run on a heavy track so the stamina is there and the turn of foot's there too
Speaker 2um well done chad can't wait to see you in melbourne with charles but what a performance by that man tempted to beat kane rising in a race us racing fans won't ever forget really for a long time anyway so well done um great ride mates and um yeah we'll see you at flemington on saturday thank you so
Speaker 4much gareth i appreciate it good on you
Speaker 2there's chad scofield there let's get stuck into our break down on giddy up it's time for the melbourne breakdown
Speaker 1with david gately gator
Speaker 2good morning
Speaker 5to you good morning to you gareth and hutch and what a great day's racing it's become if you're in melbourne and sydney or just a horse racing fan which we all need to be and clint hutchison
Speaker 2hutchie g'day mate how you going i am well that's good how are you more importantly yeah pretty good
Speaker 6yeah pretty good we might
Speaker 2have a chat about this everest after having chad scofield on the show just a little bit more about the race and what did you
Speaker 6make of it oh look they've done a great job with that race haven't they it's fantastic spectacle you could see all the people on course and it it's a race that delivered again i mean full credit to kieran marr and the team were tempted and chad i thought chad's ride was brilliant um made the most of the gate he uh as he said they weren't going to do car you getting favors and i was a bit perplexed at the time that uh didn't sort of press on early with with car ying rising but um obviously there was a lot of speed underneath and chad made the most of it delivered a great ride and deserved the win have you had a look at
Speaker 2the numbers yet for the everest the early sectionals yeah
Speaker 6they were rolling
Speaker 2so he's a very
Speaker 6fast horse he's a very
Speaker 2fast horse so do you think that he could have maintained that speed that's
Speaker 6the question i'm asking wow i mean well you'll never know i would i would think on what he's done in the past quite possibly yeah you know he's a pretty quick horse so yeah um so zach in your to me to my eyes that came out a little neutral and probably was a bit would have been a bit surprised that um so many kicked up told the spot but they're not going to make it easy as chad said That was it. So at watching it live, I must admit, I was a bit perplexed. I was like, oh, okay, he's not going to be up there. And now it's a different role for him. Um, look, it was still in a massive run and defeat and he's, um, the barrier probably helped him last year when he won and it was, it went against him this year. So he's run two great races. The, the, the, the worst thing for me though, is that he's probably both times in Australia hasn't quite, well, we've seen in the trials, he hasn't quite come to the form that we're used to with him. We've seen that in the trials and then on race days turned out and race really well. But yeah, I was, I was surprised that he wasn't, you know, pressing on early cause that is his asset. His asset is rolling at a high tempo and, you know, putting a lot of them in the hurt locker. So it was a different role for him, but Hey, it's the big occasion. It's the big day. You gotta, you gotta deliver. And Chad did that.
Speaker 5Gator. Yeah. I don't think they used his maximum, um, you know, inverted commas, God given talent. Um, so yeah, they haven't used a hundred percent of that. I think that's what's costing the race, but he doesn't, he's not the same horse here. He's still awesome. He's unbelievable, but he's not invincible. You know, as evidenced by defeat on Saturday, a couple of trials and a one length win last year. So he's just, he's not the same horse. He's still awesome as a say. Um, but it seems to be a chink in the arm. All horses are different. You know, black cover only travel once and she sort of fell in, you know, or, but you know, she'd be world-class athletes that day. And she's still one, that's her only job, but she wasn't the same horse, you know? So it's, it's, it's, um, it's something we have to factor in. So pre-race I'm saying, I said, if, if this is, if this is Hong Kong, he's a dollar. Oh, one. If this is soft, um, track and Ramwick, he's probably a dollar 40, um, heavy track. Ramwick, he's probably what dollar 92 dollars. So, um, he's, he's still ran enormous. Uh, I think if they wanted, if they had their time over, they'd ride him differently, but it's not how the world works, mate. You know, how many games would we have lost as a footy coach? If I knew after the game, what the others were going to do. Um, it's not how it works. So it's no good saying that.
Speaker 2How good is he stamped at much?
Speaker 6Oh, she's exceptional. Yeah. You know, I mean, and I think the good thing, they had a game plan on the day. They've executed it brilliantly, but, um, yeah, I mean, Chad to, to be positive there and hold that spot. Um, one in two. I think, um, you know, she was, she was close to good speed. Most of those around them. I don't know how much depth there was around her, but she, she absorbed that speed and kicked home and was too good. Like she deserved the win. She was great last year as well. Wasn't she? So she's the real deal. And, um, yeah, she's, that was a super performance. I think she's, uh, she's top notch.
Speaker 2What does this do for Kane rising with his legacy?
Speaker 6I don't, because we all thought
Speaker 2he was invincible.
Speaker 6Yeah. You know, he's still, he's still run a huge race. Unbelievable. Really another bound as well. So you can't be, I mean, it's a game of inches. You know what I mean? It's a shame for his legacy, but look, it's a great race. I think it's actually good for racing in a way that, you know, they've come down and okay. They've tasted defeat. I think he's had genuine excuses personally, but irrespective of that, that's what racing is all about. We want to see the best against the best. And, um, you know, on the weekend, it was tempted today and she does, she thoroughly deserved it. Yeah.
Speaker 2Um, child will finish second to autumn. So she was awesome on Saturday. Autumn glow. Can child wolf gator when a Cox play?
Speaker 5Yeah, he definitely got a seat at the table. Has any, um, in a year where there's no standout, we keep saying there's no loose brochure. There's no VSS Dana. Um, and if with the greatest respect, if Sir Delius and Aliana are your favorites, the door is wide open for a child or a three-year-old or a bird man, or, uh, you know, I could make a case for six or seven without even thinking. It's going to be a ripper, but gee, there'll be some different opinions.
Speaker 2Hmm. Hutch. I think it's great for the race. He's rocking up. He's a good, he's flying.
Speaker 6Yeah. He's absolutely flying child wolf. And like it's taken a superstar to beat him too. I mean, and, uh, I think I love the backup. We saw how good the backup can be on the weekend as well. We had all levels and even more so probably will as much so at the, at the top level too. So now he's, he's going particularly well. You'd want good speed. You usually get that in the Cox play. And, uh, Joe pride's a great trainer. And, uh, you know, I think it's going to be a good race. Yeah. It's funny how racing works, you know, Chad, uh, winning Everest and all of a sudden he's now he's in the Cox play that, um, it has a funny way of working sometimes racing. It would be no surprise if Mr.
Speaker 2Chadwick. Yep. He's a big time rider, Chad. He doesn't make too many mistakes in the big ones. And I, child wolf, he can get a strong 2000 meters with high pressure. He's nearly the horse to beat.
Speaker 6He'll run a big race. Well, it's interesting. You talk about Chad being a big race rider. He absolutely is. We interviewed him on the triple trail last week and he, he was, I could, he was supremely confident. Yeah. Um, I know it was carrying in the race, but he, you know, when you get that feeling, when you talk to jockeys, like they just, he felt like he could win the race and he did. And I think he has this very similar feeling with child.
Speaker 2It's 15 minutes past eight, simply sensational moment of the week. There's so many to choose from this week. Oh, four double nine, seven, three, six, seven, three, six to join our conversation on the Garrett's horse and hound text line on the other side of this break. We're going to relive cool field cup day. Join the conversation.
Speaker 1Text us on 0 4 double nine, seven, three, six, seven, three, six live across Australia. This is giddy up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 2Welcome back to giddy up Gareth Hall, David Gately, and also Clint Hutchison with you as we break down this meeting at cool field. All thanks to Woodside park, the home of celestial legend brewing in the Doncaster mile, a group one tough in the round with Guinea's a group one and lower river devastating winner of the group one Dubai world cup, the son of the size sensation into mischief. The cool field cup was the feature there on Saturday. Let's relive this race.
Speaker 7Around the corner at the 350 from soul of Spain from Kingswood out wide Kingswood coming at him. Kingswood takes the lead 50 meters to go. It's the grace and George chasing Kingswood, but Kingswood. So it was a drama pack cool
Speaker 2field cup this year. Sadly, we lost a hope he wins with that fall and half yours went down about the 200 meter mark. They haven't had an inquiry into how that fall was caused just yet. So we can just dissect that with the team in just a moment. But where do we, we'll start with the winner here, Hutch Kingswood. He was very good. Obviously he was coming off that. Might and power stakes run the week before when they went lickety split and he, he, he was just dominant three wide without covering. It didn't matter. He raced away.
Speaker 6Yeah, it was a, it was some performance. Was it? Well, you're right though. He put the writing on the wall the week before against, um, a very highly touted horse and she's an alibi. Of course I know that land legend wanted, but it was still a race that rated really well. They ran good time. And on the backup, I think, um, real poor it's here to, to Gavin Betch. Good. I mean, once again, he. It was encapsulated in Matt Hill's core, you know, veggies one and good ride. I mean, look, I know it was why without cover John Allen, but he had a couple of decisions at different stages to make, and he drew poorly. Obviously the fence was a spot to be, and he couldn't find it, but the way it was always going to happen at some stage to the day, the race races were going to unfold a little differently. And I think being handy enough and in the right spot at a key time worked out well, but he, he deserved the wind Kingswood. He was great.
Speaker 2They can be genius rides in a way three wide without cover. If you can own it. Dictate that race out wide, then it's better than going all the way back to last.
Speaker 6Well, it defied what was sort of happening all through the day. And there was probably reasons for that. When you go through what happened in the race and the Caulfield cup, as often as the case, there's moves at some stage, Jamie Spencer, obviously throughout the anchor far too soon and far too much. And, um, it, it really changed. Had it, it really had a sort of knock on effect in terms of then other horses making their move, et cetera, but all that. It was, it was, it was a really good win from Kingswood and what a job he's done with it. Like it's unbelievable. Yeah. Benchmark 70 to a
Speaker 2Caulfield cup winner, um, Gator, unbelievable.
Speaker 5Really? Yeah. Look, he, he, he'd been terrific. All prep. He'd been in a couple of fast run races and I've waited for age and said, well, um, he'd been still traveling well coming into the straight. I thought he was flying his horse and he's just got to get back and notch, um, to a handicap. The 20 hundred was an unknown. He had one go at the trip, but it was a very heavy. Track and he didn't finish off. I don't think he handled it at all. He obviously runs the trip given he was wide for the first thousand here and still beat them. Um, yeah, so it's all on him. Second, third, fourth had softer run and he still beat him, you know, and they beat fifth. Okay. Um, and even the running six beat that horse. Okay. So, um, yeah, that's, that's the way I look at it. Uh, it's, it's a case of all on as him, you know, everything's a great ride when they win, but I'm in the horse drew barrier five thousand. What do you, what are you going to do? You got to, you're going to have to play for a bit of luck. Um, he did get cover from that when they made that mid race move, which was really helpful. I think, but it's hard to reference. He looked out and they weren't winning out there and he still beat him. So, um, no sucking behind, I'm afraid.
Speaker 2Say George might back up into a Cox play. They're still saying how he pulls up in the jar was third. Can he win a Melbourne cup on that?
Speaker 6Well, at least he's run. Well, yeah, you know, he, he, he drew gate one, didn't he? So he was in a spot where you want to go. wanted to be and he had he was on the right sort of ground in the race, you'd have to say he had his opportunity, but he's run well and there might be a little improvement, although sometimes they can come off that performance a little bit. But, you know, they'll be encouraged. And why wouldn't you have a shot if you've run third in a Caulfield Cup? You go, well, let's have a crack.
Speaker 5Gator? Yeah, look, he ran well. It was interesting that Dawson's Creek, after the race, said maybe he ran out of fitness. I mean, that's pretty much a trainer's job, isn't it? Isn't the coach's job to get him fit? Anyway, he ran really well, but, you know, every possible chance. So this is historically the best guy for the Melbourne Cup, and he probably fits the right profile this year of being international.
Speaker 6Apparently that's what I need, a trainer. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Not like Gator. No, no, no. He's as fit as a fiddle.
Speaker 2He would never go into one of his big grand finals unfit. Cosmic Crusader, I thought Piker gave him a peach. He couldn't have had enough on him. And especially when you have a look at the numbers, it wasn't like a strong 2,400 metres. He's like, this is his race, Cosmic Crusader.
Speaker 6Yeah, I thought they'd probably go back, ride for luck, and hug the fence and, you know, try and find the spot because it was going to be too difficult. Amazing bit of riding. Yeah, get the 1-1. That was great. And he had, yeah, he kind of had his chance. Look, first go, the 24. It was a strange run in the way that almost on the line he seemed to be coming again, didn't he? Like, I wouldn't say he didn't stay. And he had a good run in the race.
Speaker 2Maybe Pike, he's right. You can't ride him that close. Maybe he was too good of a ride.
Speaker 6Honestly, I'm, yeah, he seems to be better when you're just a little more conservative with him. Like, he's run well. He found a spot, but he's had to use him still to get there, and that's dulled his finish for mine. So I completely agree with that. And I wouldn't put, yeah, that distance range past him, but maybe a conservative approach.
Speaker 5Gator? He's a ripper, isn't he? You know, we sort of mentioned him as a poor man's northerly. He just has a great will to win. He tries his backside off. He did give all of those in the finish a bit of weight as well. And I don't think there's any doubt he's probably 1.4 length better. Well, that was the margin on a soft five or six, isn't he? But, yeah, what a great, genuine athlete. He's got a great mix of class and courage. It takes you a long way.
Speaker 2Yeah. He'll back up in a Cox play. I know Bob says we'll wait for Tuesday morning, but he'll back up in a Cox play. He's your $1.10 with you, is he? Yeah, probably the backup, yeah.
Speaker 5Well, he's got a history of backing up well, hasn't he? Yeah, yeah. So, you know, he's just that sort of athlete. He's like normally, you know, those tough Jamaica, those sort of tough boys and girls can do it.
Speaker 2Others can't. He might be the forgotten horse at the end of the day in the Cox play. What's the weather doing, Gareth? Is there any rain about? There's a little bit of rain Friday, Saturday, but I give up on it. I got sunburned in Sydney on Saturday. They told me it was going to rain all day. Did you put some on top of the melon? Yeah, no, no, I didn't, no.
Speaker 6I mean, you're getting a bit light up there. Yeah, yes, very light up, very light.
Speaker 2I didn't like the photos I took as well. I thought, you can't put them on social media, Gareth. What has happened?
Speaker 6Which is when you get in those lifts and you find out there's patches
Speaker 2of this thing that you didn't realise. What has happened to you? Kings Valley, Saran, they're okay?
Speaker 6Yeah, I thought Kings Valley was good because he got in, you know, he's part of that incident. Yeah. But Saran, I think he was a, it's early days and he's going to be a nice horse, but he had to be. He got a pretty good run around. I'm not sure. Would you make a Saran's run, Gator?
Speaker 5Yeah, well, I mean, he followed the runner up, didn't he? St. George and couldn't get past him, but wasn't thrashed. He ran okay. It's probably about his mark. You know, given the way the track played, he was in the perfect spot following the right horse and just wasn't quite good enough.
Speaker 2Yeah. Horses that you want to be following the other call for your carp. I'm still. I've got a ticket on Middle Earth. I'm still pretty happy that I have a ticket on Middle Earth, Hutch. Heading towards the cup.
Speaker 6Yeah. There wasn't a lot. There wasn't a lot out of the cup that I really thought I'll follow that going forward, to be honest. No. For the Melbourne Cup, I'll be picking a different form line.
Speaker 2Yeah. What about you here, Hutch? I mean, Gator?
Speaker 5He just upgraded me. Yeah, look, he kept finding the line, didn't he, Middle Earth? And we know he ran really well. He ran really well in the race last year. We know he's going to be peaking for the race. I do think this year's Melbourne Cup looks a little deeper, though.
Speaker 6Yeah. Yeah. Don't multitask, Gator. No, no. I've just got a text message.
Speaker 2Michael Brow's coming on at 11 o'clock. Oh, is he?
Speaker 6I've just got that confirmed. 100%. Good. I was worried there was something wrong with the wiring for a second. No, no, no.
Speaker 2Now, let's have a chat about this fall. It was hard to watch. It was hard to watch, and obviously, it's just when you have something happen like this in such a big race, and you're a racing fan, you know the ramifications for it. It does leave an awful feeling in your stomach, and you hate to see it. And, yeah, it's heartbreaking to see a horse get put down after the race, and I hope he wins. And then you try and look at, like, what cause this fall. I've had a look at it a few times. It's an interesting one, because you see James Johnson, and obviously, with his horse. King's Valley and Green Spaces come together, and Green Spaces, to me, come in a little bit, and then James obviously got in contact with Green Spaces there, with King's Valley, and then that forced Green Spaces to lose his footing, and then that's what happened, and then the fall got caused that way, in a way.
Speaker 6Well, to be honest, the stewards have still got to deliberate and work out what's at fault, but, yeah, it looked like he made contact with the hindquarters, which is almost. Yeah, and then, you know, the horse screwed Green Spaces back around, and, look, the bottom line is there was significant interference, and unfortunately, you know, there's a couple of days a year where you don't want it any day, but if. No, especially this day. this day, and in particular, these races, because there's more eyeballs on them, so, absolute tragic for, obviously, connections of, I hope he wins, and all concerned, and a racing incident was caused by interference to the eye, and I think there was a lot of concern. Yeah, there were multiple factors in there. The stewards will go through it. I've only seen it a couple of times. I didn't want to sort of go back and watch it too many times, but, look, yeah, it's just one of those very unfortunate things that we don't want to see, and the good thing, I suppose, out of it, or thankfully, I should say, that the boys are okay in terms of Mark and Jai, because. They were so lucky. Yeah, we weren't getting a lot of information on how they were, and one of them hadn't sort of moved for quite a while on the track, so, you know, fortunately, they've walked away from it injury-free.
Speaker 5Gator? Yeah, look, I think the key is that the why, as you referenced there, the why is really important, you know, so what happens when, in any jurisdiction, in anything around the world, if something, you know, happens that we don't want to see, we need to examine it forensically and circumvent these things happening again. Now, it's never going to be perfect, you know, I watch Formula One and cars run off the track, and I went to a game of local footy once, and a young man, you know, got into all sorts of trouble with a head knock and didn't end well there, so things happen in the world that are not ideal, but we can't all just sit in our room and do nothing, you know, it was a Richmond plug hit by a tram crossing Punt Road, for God's sake, so we can't just do nothing, but we need to know the why, if we understand the why, if a plane crashes, what do they do? They examine the why. And they stop it happening again, we're not aiming for perfection, but we want to get as close to that as we possibly can, but the outpouring of emotion, certainly from the stable and of this horse, I hope he wins, was beautiful, you know, talking about his nature, his kindness, that sort of stuff made me happy.
Speaker 2Yeah, and it's racing, it's going to happen, it's been, unfortunately, it'll happen again, and you don't like to see it, and you don't want to see it, but this was a situation where, you know, it's going to happen, it's going to happen, it's going to happen, it's There were riders taking gaps and then there was gaps closing. And unfortunately, we had this accident that happened. But the stewards will have to have a look at it because.
Speaker 6They will and I wonder whether or not.
Speaker 2With James Johnson. I don't know if he was steering the horse as well as he should have been. And there's no doubt Green Spaces comes back in and then they just take Mark Zara's ride. So the stewards will have to deem whether it was just a racing accident or James Johnson and Rachel King. I think maybe James has got more to answer for than Rachel. Whether he had to steer his horse better. And I think that's what they'll
Speaker 6have to come to the conclusion. Well, and as Gatiss said, it's probably even beyond that. I mean, I know back in the day they used to bring stewards in. They have in a lot of jurisdictions and they may well have done on the weekend. Just to give them a gentle reminder. Hey, you know, you know, obviously. High stakes. High stakes. Ride carefully because you, you, you, you know. You're under close, closer scrutiny than normal. And we have got to be aware of that. And we can't let ambition and et cetera, sort of get in the way of, you know, looking after fellow riders and the game itself.
Speaker 2It's 8.31. Gareth Hall, Clint Hutchinson, David Gately with you. We'll take a break. More of the breakdown next.
Speaker 1Text us on 04009736. Live across Australia.
Speaker 20-4-double-9-7-3-6-7-3-6 to join our conversation. We'll get to the text messages towards the back end of the breakdown on the Garrods Horse and Hound text line. Let's get to the Thousand Guineas. This was the other group one on Caulfield Cup Day. And this horse, about three weeks ago, they didn't think that she was good enough to win a Thousand Guineas, saintly dancer, but this is what she did on Saturday.
Speaker 7The first to straighten in the Thousand Guineas. 3.50 out by a length and a half held together from Ice Lady, wanting to lay in on top of La Aranda Poba. Then over the bridge behind them, D'Armas and Regal Ambition down the outside. Saintly dancer, 150 metres to go. Given her head, two lengths in front of Ice Lady, whose way would saintly dancer going? Great guns, a length and a half. Saintly dancer won the Thousand Guineas from Ice Lady.
Speaker 2Yeah, she was terrific, saintly dancer. First of all, Clint Hutchison, it was very easy. It wasn't easy. It wasn't easy to make up ground there at Caulfield. I think everyone, including the MRC, are looking forward to digging up this track and starting again.
Speaker 6Yeah, I mean, that three days of the carnival, the first day was the best. It was a quick track. And then I think, interestingly, so they've obviously watered the next couple of days. And yeah, we had a clear pattern on the weekend. So anyway, that race there that we've just highlighted, the Thousand Guineas pacing pattern suited them, didn't it? They didn't go that quick. And it was, rails and run was a big plus on speed. Where the Ford you were, the better it was. And that's what happens when you have a horse like that. And they've run one-two in the run one-two home. But I, as I said on Saturday and the coverage, Gia, I think the best filly for mine's run third, clearly. I mean, not many did what she did. I don't know what they'll do, if they'll carry on and pick something else up out of the preparation. But I wasn't actually with Regal Ambition on the day. But in hindsight, she was the best run for mine.
Speaker 5Gaynor? Yeah, not much to add. I'm not sure what the next iteration of the Caulfield track is, whether it's, you know, that same grass, it's Kikuyu, it's AstroTurf, it's blue with green shades and yellow tinge. I don't care what it is, but let's get it as fair as we can so punters can be protected and stay involved in the great game. But, you know, the more we see this sort of thing, unfortunately, the more punters we lose.
Speaker 2Yeah. And so they're going to, and I think they've been, they've been upfront about it, that their track's tied and they need to start again with it. And they will do the renovations.
Speaker 6I mean, it's good to having a renovation, because they clearly need it.
Speaker 2Yeah, they clearly need it. And yeah, and I'm looking forward to seeing it come back in the autumn. I think it's off for a long time. It'll come back for the start of the big races, really, next year. So Saintly Dancer, Ice Lady, Regal Ambition, that was the top three. Top three in the 1000 Guineas. Other feature races there on the day, well, the Henley Home Sprint. Tommy Dabinick, he had a big day because he got the double with Shadow VAR. In fact, I ran into Joe O'Neill at the airport on Friday and he told me you'd get a double. And he did exactly that with Shadow VAR and Cavalry Girl. But this is what Cavalry Girl did on Saturday afternoon.
Speaker 7The favourite Cavalry Girl held together by three quarters, beds nine. Then I'm foxing. Don't hope. Two up along the inside from Gallant Sun. Brought towards the centre and back behind them, pallets on. Cavalry Girl at the 150. Kicked into gear about a length and three quarters. Don't hope. Two chasing. Cavalry Girl, 50 metres to go. Cavalry Girl has it won. Cavalry Girl, a length. Don't hope. Two beds nine.
Speaker 2She's a good mare, isn't she, Hutch?
Speaker 6Talented, yeah. Yeah, she had the right form. But even more so, I think, importantly on the weekend, she's got gate speed. And, you know, once again, it was a good day to have her racing pattern, that's for sure. And that's what happens ultimately. So she's had a great preparation. She's clearly come back, improved this campaign. And, I mean, the pleasing thing from their perspective, I suppose, would have been that there's no doubt she's a little better on a wet track, but she's been able to sort of do it on better ground there on the weekend.
Speaker 5Gator? Yeah, it's pretty, I mean, she's very fast and she ran fast time. 56 through is a good gallop, isn't it, from the front? She'd be dominant this year. But as Hutch said, all on tracks with a bit of gear. But she's hardly inept on dry, obviously. And she just kept running too fast. Simple as that. You know, I was with Bev's nine, thinking he's earlier in the prep. Might better to get her here at three times the price. But I can't make any excuse because he's at second. And don't have to return to form, albeit, you know, in that perfect spot for the day.
Speaker 2In the Tristark, we had a chat about Shadow Vars. She made the most of her opportunity with the track. She was at gate speed. Jeez, it was getting late by the time we ran that race. But she was far too strong, Shadow Var. Concord Connie was a beauty.
Speaker 6It was a day that was never going to end by that stage. It would have been pretty long. Yes. But you know what? A lot of punters stayed out there and were enjoying themselves. So that was good to see. They would have got value for their money. I was surprised how many people hung around because there was no, the stewards sort of weren't sure when that second ambulance left, how long before we were going to start the last race. Yeah, well, I was strongly with Concord Connie. And by the time we got to that race, I was realising quite quickly that that one wouldn't be winning. And I thought her run was enormous. But, you know, Shadow Var's a very talented horse. Once again, pace pattern, not so much pace, but the pattern on side. And it was going to be hard to beat anyway, just at Caulfield and when it was good. But I tell you, I think Concord Connie's one to follow where there's a 1,400 metre race at Flemington isn't there. Correct, yeah. She'll go there. She'll be hard to beat.
Speaker 5Gator? Yeah, she's no slouch, Shadow Var. For sure. You know, she rolled along with a good, solid, clear three length above average and, you know, kept going too well. But I don't think there's much doubt who the better horse is. But, yeah, it's just not the way it worked out on the day. And the money, look, punters aren't silly. They watched the first 56 races and had been there, some of them, for 12 hours. You know, and Shadow Var's where the money was for obvious reasons. It was too, too, was in front at the end of the race on the day. I won't say too good, but was in front at the end of the race.
Speaker 2King's Knits or Quick Finish win a classic.
Speaker 6Hutch? I don't think so.
Speaker 2No. The favourite of the ethereal stakes, Miss White Titty's in the paddock. So they weren't happy with it.
Speaker 6Yeah, it was interesting there. I think they said, you know, like, I'm not sure about that whole bunch, to be honest, but there was sort of, a couple of them were tracking well. Miss White Titty looked like she was travelling and then she was gone. Mm-hmm. And I think it was Fringilla in the same race. It looked like it was travelling, then it was gone. It was a bizarre, bizarre sort of race, really.
Speaker 5Yeah. Gator? Yeah, they're strange, aren't they, these three old fillies? And the boys as well. But fillies seems to be more prevalent. Things change so quickly with this age demographic, especially as they get out to middle distances and beyond. Like, we often don't even know the Oaks winners running until 14 days before an Oaks in Melbourne and Sydney. So. Yeah, things can change quickly, and obviously a different kettle of fish as we get to Flemington, Wakefield, and then Flemington, Oaks.
Speaker 2Is War Machine back, Gator?
Speaker 5Yeah, good, good little win. Um, the stable said he was back. Uh, he couldn't have asked for a better run. And if you asked him before the race and his connections, oh, we'll take the run trial, but I was looking forward, he'll, he'll go two lengths behind us. If you can't win off that. Rationale, you're probably not going to win another race. Um, but things panned out perfectly. You know, I think he was probably the second best run in the race. Um, you know, private eyes, you know, not getting any younger, but just missed the run that he took and all of a sudden he's two links behind that horse, um, and then ran on strongly to just me now give war machine credit. When he saw him coming, he was in for the fight. So he's, he's, I mean, you can't fluke a group one. He's, he's a good horse war machine and I reckon he's sort of he's back, but not group one back. Let's put it that way.
Speaker 2Yeah. Hey, I'm going to take a break. I want to have a chat about the blue Sapphire stakes next. And I want to get all of your questions in here on the Garrett's horse and hound text line.
Speaker 1Text us on 0 4 double 9 7 3 6 7 3 6 live across Australia. This is giddy up with Gareth hall
Speaker 7coming up to the turn and still five links off the front behind those. This horse is half pipe with Marthiano and doubt time pocket full of cash in front from Jabba da then came barracks. Who's trying desperately to get out and does get out straight and rule to the outside closing to barracks at the one 50 was straight and ruler then Marthiano and doubt time right down the outskirts. Marthiano coming at barracks. They go to the line photo finish. Very close, close here.
Speaker 2Marthiano defeats barracks and doubt time. Um, the blue Sapphire stakes. That was a massive upset. They're hutch. I think it surprised everyone, including the stable and the punters. Well, there's going to be a stage of the day where
Speaker 6they're also going to go up, going to go forward and try and do something. And, um, it, it unfolds. And this is what Gator was mentioning earlier about for the punters. And, you know, there's a tipping point. And for me, that was almost this race. A lot of them sort of were going out and putting a little bit of a pace on or whatever, but hard to find. Yeah. But I think it was a shock to the stable and it was a shock to me. I couldn't find it. So I did. Did you find it? No chance, no. I even asked JD on Thursday.
Speaker 2celebrating up in Sydney at this stage, I suppose. Yeah, well, I couldn't. Even Barrick surprised me a little bit. He stepped up. What did you make of the race there, Gator?
Speaker 5Yeah, it was an odd one, wasn't it? A fearsome sort of speed. And not only that, they were cutting each other up. And those at the top of the market significantly under-behorn and overexcited, missed the start and didn't look the same horse. Yeah, it was sort of left to Marfiano, who got the good run through. And, yeah, I didn't give it any hope. Barrick was good, you know, just tightened at such a key stage, but wasn't the better part of the track, probably. Gee, that time was terrific, wasn't he? Not many were coming from three lengths left, for sure. And he charges and just misses. If he just got the first couple of hundred metres right, he's your winner. Loved the run of Half Pipe as well. Gee, that was a sneaky gem of a run. I think Maywell have won with even luck as well. And, again, against the pattern, so perhaps one to follow there.
Speaker 2Yeah. Hey, horses to follow from Caulfield Hutch?
Speaker 6Oh, I think there were quite a few. Anything that was wide on the way it was run out wide. It's a couple of good runs. I thought Star of Macedon was a really good run. Is it Your Colour? Yeah. I thought from back in the field. Will they go to Oaks with her? Yes, yes. I thought those were two that I remember on the day thinking, gee, they were good runs, and probably more so. And then the other one, obviously. Obviously, Concord Connie, I thought was a great run.
Speaker 5Gator? Yeah, pretty much. I mean, historically, it's a great way to find value in it. If you're, you know, making ground or on speed in a run. If you're defying the pattern. So, all of those horses Hutch mentioned, I'd add Half Pipe to that. Regal Ambition, Concord Connie, and, you know, Doubt Time. Pretty much all of them. So, do your videos, and you'll be. I think if they got your money on Saturday, you can get it back.
Speaker 2We'll take a break. We'll come back with your questions next here on Giddy Up.
Speaker 1Text us on 0499 736 736.
Speaker 2Let's get through a few of these questions on the Gareth Horson Hound text line. This is Giddy Up, all thanks to Bet365 and the Monday broadcast. legend time for a quick break on the other side of it we'll come back with plenty more next join the conversation text us on 0 4
Speaker 19 7 3 6 7 3 6 live across australia this is giddy up with gareth hall welcome back to giddy up
Speaker 2all thanks to bet 365 let's continue our breakdowns thanks to woodside park the home of celestial legend brilliant in the don castamola group one tough in the roundwick guineas at group one and lowell river devastating winner of the group one dubai world cup and the son of size sensation into mischief uh mickey gannon joins us here on this monday morning to break down this meeting at roundwick on saturday hello to you mick yeah good day g let's have a chat about the everest and what a performance by tempted too good for carrying rising what did you make of it
Speaker 8good place to start uh the everest yeah look full credit to chad full credit to uh kieran marg being able to utilize barrier one and land the position in run where she did so i think first and foremost before you talk about you know rides and everything else if they didn't land in that position i don't think that they probably win the race so it was very very good barrier do win your races you know we spoke about it on um on tuesday i'm not only wednesday gareth about you know barrier one was that going to be an advantage for tempted and at that stage we thought it was i think as the week went on we thought you know rain affected track we're going to be on a no better than a soft seven um it'd be a disadvantage but we got back to a soft five the track actually time wise raced from that should start to a good four um so it was and you're going to see the presence of almost dust sort of puffing up at some stage so i was you just you that that track played closer to a good four there on saturday especially come race seven for the everest but um great ride chad great effort from the track curators to you know for the track to get back to you know racing in that shape as well so as a starting point jay that's probably the starting point for the
Speaker 2everest when you break down the numbers for the everest like how quick did they go on the early part um and what did you make of carrying rising's performance and the ride from zach purton
Speaker 8yeah so a few things to break down um falling's faster than group one to the 600 meters which you'd expect in the best sprinting race in the world potentially even expect them to go a bit quicker garrett so um no surprises that that was the speed especially we spoke about the stand-up all week and there's a couple of quick horses in and amongst there drawn underneath the ride itself i think some you know without giving an opinion um off the bat let's talk about some some facts so here's the third horse into stride you can see that over from the overhead vision um then from his uh 12 to a thousand twelve hundred to a thousand meter mark there was a six fastest horse in the race and from the thousand to the 600 meters which is probably the biggest point here to take out of the race here was the 12 fastest so the slowest horse in the race from the thousand to the 600 meters jay now i question if that allows the horse to then run up to his you know maximum aerobic ability let's call it how much energy is it the horse have left and if you're going backwards when a lot of horses are going forwards or at least maintaining it's going to be very very difficult now i don't i don't i'm not here to say it was a it was a good ride or a bad ride or maybe it's just a victim of circumstances like it's tough from there if you wanted to give your horse every chance to win the race um on paper after assessing that you i'd say you would have should have gone forward and should have sat three wide and i think it's as simple as that however if you're going backwards and you're whatever um he's a very very good racehorse gareth that unfortunately was a victim of circumstances on the day and got beaten by the narrowest of
Speaker 2margins so zach probably thought he was going too quick in that first furlong and then um he restrained the horse in that period of the race and i can see why he was the 12 quickest under those circumstances but when you have a look at those numbers in um when you tell us those numbers it's sort of like maybe you should have the foot down zach and if he gets beat he gets beat but he's on the quickest racehorse in the world i'm right into his strengths and and just let him run basically spot
Speaker 8on oh you would have been happy to see three wide no covering and if you get beaten by the barrier and you get beaten by the occasion so be it but you can tell the tender like so she's got enormous but she was she was on empty at the 11 after 1100 meters so we had 100 minutes to go she was dead set on empty and he still had water off her so you know i know that zach sort of suggested that you know uh headwall came outside and and sort of gave kaying rising a spur i just think he had genuinely more to offer so and he clearly did that the sectionals tell you that so i would have thought if he had his time over zach you know if it was saturday morning again and he had his time over he would um he would be in his mind all right we're just going to be positive no matter what because we're clearly on the best horse here and i don't people will tell you that that track was shifty etc etc the way the time suggests it was a good four so um i think you could put a line through that sort of narrative that's been created post-race but when you're on the best horse and you've got an awkward draw sometimes you just need to be bold and maybe zach just thought the horse was that much better than them that he would win from there and he nearly did so i don't know how critical you could be of a ride like if you go in i don't know what the instructions were with team hayes as well maybe maybe they said listen mate this horse is so much better than them get covering and let it rip you know and if that's what it is that's the way it's going to be but not great for the punters i guess that were on the boosted price um
Speaker 2and maybe he's just not the same horse at ram week he he had a lovely run last year when he drew a middle gate and this year he drew a wider gate and um it didn't go to plan so i think if you swap the barriers with tempted and carrying rising the result changed but that's racing no doubt he's
Speaker 8there's no doubt about that gareth and i could you could just you can wait for it in 15 minutes time when uncle wayne will jump on and he'll say barrows win races gareth um there is no doubt k and rising is a better horse than tempted but that's that's neither here nor there tempted got the job done and great ride and it's not always about best horse we talk about it all the time the best horses don't win don't always win the races in fact they probably only win best horse in the race probably only wins 30
Speaker 2percent of the time yeah um what about tempted will go down the straight now at flemington which is terrific news for that carnival so she'll be going around in the race um k and rising goes back to hong kong what'd you make of the beaten brigade there and this year's everest yeah
Speaker 8jimmy starr was disappointing obviously was slow out and just never never featured in the race like he didn't get to run anywhere near his best so um you know to finish her idea given everything it was pretty good i thought headwall was exceptional if we ended up on a rain effect the track headwall potentially could have won that race um didn't you know that good four surface isn't up his alley jolly star very good ninja it was probably what you'd expect from ninja cabalas was good given his few excuses as well so um yeah i thought cabalas probably ran well and truly above expectation there and as the headwall um the rest of them pretty much ran to where you'd
Speaker 2expect yeah um autumn glow i think she proved she's the best horse in the land she did it with ease to take out the king charles char wolf um is just running out of his skin at the moment he finished second i can't wait to see plate now yeah
Speaker 8he can win a fox plate
Speaker 2yeah i reckon 100
Speaker 8you know what unfortunately and we wanted you know pride of jenny was in the race we're all racing on a wet track i have no doubt the gap the margin would have been significantly closer now whether or not autumn glow so char wolf is still couldn't get the autumn glow at that setup well we'll never know but um she had every conceivable chance and she should have won by the margin she won by you know she had militarized the track into the race a stable mate and you know she's got a lot of experience he somehow landed forward you know more forward than he usually does so um good to show good to see some intent there at least um but she should have won by that margin gareth um brain affected track and pride of jenny in the race you might have seen a different story but we didn't it comes back down to you know race shape plays everything people want to tell you speed maps don't matter and race shape doesn't matter
Speaker 2it means a lot yeah um so char wolf what price do you think he should be in a cox plate is he better than eliana and sir delius at the moment
Speaker 8i i still firmly believe that aliena is should be the favorite but no idea i'm just bringing up the market as a speech he's equal favorites so delius char will fight 50 look he wouldn't i think he would prefer a rain effect attract track to move the needle on an aliena albeit she'll handle it but i think it'd be more in his favor now i don't want to go to this bureau of meteorology because we've been hammered by this last week and and unfortunately we still gave to rain and we didn't get the you know the prediction spot on but there's an enormous amount of rain forecast late saturday night so who knows what we get we're going to learn our lessons what is it what do they say on the fireball don't get beat by what you know what we know is we just worry about it on saturday morning uh moving forward but um yeah it could move the needle i'd say i'd have aliena first pick char wolf second seed so delius third war not too far behind him i think the gap if you were keen on the three-year-olds the gap between
Speaker 2uh yeah hey this is a good question jolly started being tempted down the straight would you agree
Speaker 8with that really good question i'd And I think the gap would close.
Speaker 2I agree with you there. Having a look at the other races there, the Sydney Stakes, well, under Kelly Sweeter, one of the good guys of racing, he was able to get Grafton Burners. He's been flying to burst through the centre to win the Sydney Stakes.
Speaker 8Great ride. Really good ride from Nash for an inside draw. At that time of the day, we thought, oh, these horses are going to struggle from the inside. But, you know, the track did dry out. Great ride, great win. Great training performance. And Grafton Burners is well and truly back. They went pretty slow. So, again, suited, close enough, good enough, cut the corner, so to speak, and was good. You know, a horse like Skybird has gone exceptionally well. She was our top pick on, I think it was Thursday when we were doing a race on the Sydney set. And we were thinking we were going to be on a soft seven at best. And she's gone exceptional. So, Mitch Freeman is doing a fantastic job there with her. Any rain-affected track that she gets, she'll be very, very competitive moving forward.
Speaker 2Horses you want to be following out of that Sydney Stakes?
Speaker 8Yeah, it would be Skybird, rain-affected track. We'll stick there. The race was okay. I think it's, you know, basically the results sort of just turned out the way, you know, the way they did and no real like, oh, my God, I want to back that horse next start. But Skybird went track for sure.
Speaker 2What about the performance there of Apocalyptic in the Silver Eagle defeating Skyhook Skyhook and Baywalk Decorum was back and forth. It was a good day for the My Racehorse team there on Saturday.
Speaker 8Complete fill-up for them. So, full credit and Apocalyptic, eh? So, you know, 1,300 metres and we thought, just get to the mile with this horse and everything will be okay. But a very, very fast run, 1,300 metres, really well suited. Baywalk, you know, every chance I thought. And even though they went quick, that's sort of his go. Skyhook, okay. But, yeah. What do you say about Apocalyptic is she's just found a mark, a high-pressure race. She's deep in her preparation. There was big spruiks and everyone thought she hadn't come up. Here she is. So, she was good. The other horses were okay. I wouldn't say, you know, what we say about within the law, make good ground, but should have high-pressure race. So, I think what we saw, we can just trust the race and the finishing position there. No real like, oh, you've got to forgive that horse.
Speaker 2The Kosciuszko. Chains of Love, just getting over the top of Band of Brothers.
Speaker 8Yeah, the rich get richer, hey?
Speaker 2Yeah. One for the battlers there. Chains of Love winning there for Arafield Stud to take out the Kosciuszko.
Speaker 8Good on them, full credit. Like, you know, the race is there for them to go in and they're allowed to turn up and win it and they do. So, you know, until anything changes there, you keep doing what you're doing and you keep getting the job done. Good win. Again, no real surprises. Band of Brothers was really good. We thought that Band of Brothers was probably going to be good. It was probably going to be better on a rain-affected track, so really good performance there from that galloper on a dry deck. So, your pence had excuses, could have finished a little bit closer. And then, again, it was a really fair day of racing and you generally do see it, you know, as far as the track plays because the rails out three metres. We spoke about it, you know, rails and runs not an advantage, albeit a couple of them from the shoot start got up rails in one run. But you want to be slightly off fence and they get to the middle of the track, lane 6 to 12, where the winners came from. And every horse really got their opportunity to get there. And really get their chance. So, yeah, well done. The best horses sort of came to the floor there at Randwick.
Speaker 2Horses to be following from that meeting at Randwick on Saturday?
Speaker 8It was one of those meetings where I thought, you know, everyone's got their chance. So, nothing really stood out as unlikely. I thought unleashing has gone to a new level. So, that was a pretty good win. Plenty was a bit disappointing. So, I want to sort of work back and work out why maybe. So, you are good. So, I think we just trust the horses that came out on top as the best horses and the deserved horses. I don't think they have to do anything crazy with that set up. Get a fix back to the inside. He's back knee, he's best. So, rain-affected track for get a fix. A few horses, rain-affected track for char wolf at some stage. Hopefully on Saturday. And a head wall rain-affected track. So, a few horses that sort of charm. And then I spoke of Skyler as well. So, a few horses that overachieved on dry decks. That will be well-suited on rain-affected track if they get them. But this time of year, you may not. So, otherwise, a real straight bat. But a great day of racing. Great coverage everywhere. And I thought it was really good, Jay.
Speaker 2Mark says, I don't know why people are squealing about Ryze and getting beat. Tempted was the best run and deserved to win after. Tempted got to the lead at the 200. He had all that distance to pick her up. It wasn't good enough. That was from Mark. Morning, Jay. What do you think about Zach Purton's mindset going to the race on Saturday? Looking back, he didn't seem as confident as he should have been. And he was on the best horse in the race. Maybe that slightly negative mindset played into his decision not to push forward. Of course, we don't know what he was instructed to do by David Hayes. That's from Kluze. A few people have brought up that. Yeah. But that's Zach Purton when you talk to him. He's never really overly confident.
Speaker 8And usually, in these. We spoke to him Saturday morning on Giddy Up Saturdays, 9, about 9.35. We spoke to him. And he just seemed cool, calm, and collected. And, look, I don't think you can, you know, I think that's what you want from your jockey. I don't think you want someone that's up and about and, you know, over the top. So, it's the same as your horse is parading. He's an absolute professional. He'd be taking it in his stride, and he was. I guess from the outside looking in, you'd think, oh, he looks a bit lethargic, you know, because of the way he's sort of communicating. But he's certainly not. He's switched on. He's one of the best I've ever seen. Look, unfortunately, Gareth, victim of circumstance, barrier draw, and a slightly negative ride. And these things happen, but the horse is kind of enormous.
Speaker 2I think, yeah, Zach Perton, regarding his mindset, he's been pretty good in big races before. So, I don't think he could blame that. But you know what?
Speaker 8Like, sometimes we can get a little bit wrong, and he's got it wrong by 0.2 of a length. Yeah. It's not. The horse didn't run eight.
Speaker 2No. Barney says, pre-race Zach mindset was, I have a lot more time to come across than Hong Kong at the 1,200. He gave away his tactics, and they pounced the other rider. Ninja was a great run, had spicy martini on his outside, whole race. And then, when Tempted made her run, Blue Door came back on him. He had to balance up again and still try it hard. Yeah, point. Does Mick Gannon think Calamari Ring would have finished closer? Did have much luck.
Speaker 8Yeah. Yeah. I agree with that. It could have finished much closer. But, you know, I don't know. I don't know even about that racing general, to be honest. Yeah. It doesn't jump out at me. It's like, back me next start, any of those runners. Beyond the Reef was good, though, from back there. It was a good run. Cloudy Scout, the horse, had got us home in the top four multi. Give it strength. I think. Yes, we got the top four multi on the weekend.
Speaker 2It was like, we got the mega boost horse beat, unfortunately. But, Carrying Rising, that was. But, apart from that, we're okay. I reckon that weekend pre-race top four multi was an unbelievable result for the Giddy Up supporters.
Speaker 8A maximum bet of $20 for the punters on Carrying Rising at $2. Or, whatever you've had on the top four multi at tens, or whatever it was. I can tell you what the better result is for the punters. Yeah. It's exceptional stuff. And, you know, good work from the boys.
Speaker 2And, four out of six. I mean, eight customers got four out of six in the six horse challenge. So, they got $1,250 each. So, there you go. That was the best result there. And, the six horse challenge, yeah, we bet three, six, five. So, there was eight customers that got four out of six. Confirm it's not me. No. I wish. I think I got two or three this week. Anything at Caulfield that is worth following in your eyes, Mick?
Speaker 8No, not really at this stage. I've got a lot of work to do there. Half pipe, basically, has just left me on the floor. So, I'll get to that meeting when I can overcome the emotional damage of that run.
Speaker 2All right, then. Well, you go and get it, Mickie. We appreciate your time. And, we'll catch up with you later on in the week. Thanks, brother. There's Mick Gatton there. This is Giddy Up on this Monday morning. We'll take a break and come back with plenty more next. Welcome back to Giddy Up. Some news coming through from Trent Mason, how's that, from Racing.com. Jai McNeil and Mark Sarra are both recovering at home. And, I know Mark Sarra's trying to ride on Saturday. Half yours is okay. It's okay, but his spring is over, or likely to be over. Yeah, you can't see him coming back this spring. Half yours. He'll go for a break after he recovers there from that fall there on Saturday. Well, there's nine horses confirmed for the Cox Plate, which includes Charles Wolfe. But, there's a couple of important decisions still to come. Like a Cosmic Crusader and a few of the Kiramar horses that competed in the Corfu Cup on Saturday. Cadolphin are giving serious consideration to running tempted in the champion sprint. I think. I think she's more likely than unlikely. Jamie Mellon will appeal her suspension as it stands. She's due to miss Derby Day. She caused interference there in the Sydney Stakes. Vauban and the Euphrates to be among the noms for Wednesday's Geelong Cup. I think Small Fry will be there as well. Affleworth is a likely starter for the Moonee Valley Gold Cup. And, Craig Williams will ride. And, Kingswood is set to go to the paddock after winning the Caulfield Cup. Saintly Dancer and Blue Door are off to the paddock and miss Waititi as well. as well, is in the paddock after she finished down the trek in the ethereal. He was the favourite there for the VRC Oaks before Saturday's race. It was a really good meeting in Perth as well. They've got a good horse in King of Light who was dominant to take out the feature race, the Group 3 there, the Arrhythmic, on Saturday at Ascot. And that carnival's starting to heat up because, obviously, it's basically the start of the lead-up races as we get set for the railway stakes and also the winter bottom. And there'll be a few horses that we saw on Saturday that'll be competing in the winter bottom. And then, of course, they've got the Northerly, which there's a strong possibility that you might see horses like Buckaroo and Pride of Jenny in that race. And then they've got the Gold Rush over the 1,400 metres, which will wrap up that carnival. So looking forward to catching up with Pete to break down that meeting at Ascot and get your questions in for Wayne Hawks and Johnny O'Neill because they'll be ready to go for the Monday Means Test. Wayne Hawks. He is so excited for this Monday's Means Test. So he's ready to go just after 9.30. In fact, I might take a quick break now on the other side of it. I'm going to catch up with Pete Anthonis to break down what happened there at Ascot on Saturday.
Speaker 1Live across Australia, this is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 2Welcome back to Giddy Up, Gareth Hall with you. We're about to have a chat now to Pete Anthonis as we continue our breakdowns of these meetings across the country. Of course, all thanks to Woodside Park, the home of Celestial Legend, brewing the Doncaster Mile at Group 1, tough in the Randwick Guineas at Group 1, and Lowell River, devastating winner of the Group 1 Dubai World Cup and the Son of Sire sensation into mischief. Pete Anthonis joins us.
Speaker 9G'day, Pete. Yeah, morning to you, Gareth.
Speaker 2What did you make of that Ascot meeting on Saturday?
Speaker 9Look, there's certainly some really big numbers. A couple of the tempos, namely the one in race four for the three-year-olds, won by Roger. That was very, very quick and probably more so expected, I think, a lot of the form experts would have anticipated. And look, in the end, Roger has got their world perfect race shape, but he's come out and he's absolutely put the number on the board as well. So, look, it's probably not knocking, say, what Treasured Legacy has done because that horse is way too close to that early tempo. But Roger's certainly. He's stamped himself as a horse that's going to be challenging, obviously, for the WA Guineas. That looks as obvious. We spoke to BJ Ryan on Trek Wait yesterday, and obviously they're pretty excited with his prospects. But then also Rockfest in the last race, which probably on the one hand speaks to how well our girl can run stuck on, given the tempo just completely first up just did not suit that horse whatsoever. And she's clearly the best of those horses on pace. But Rockfest has come back in a very big way. So we've got some really exciting horses that are still lightly raced and on the up, but they're looking all of a sudden like they might be able to contend for some of these better races going forward. And we haven't even talked about the features yet. So it was a good day of racing.
Speaker 2Is King of Light the best horse in WA now?
Speaker 9Look, I wouldn't go that far. And it's not knocking the horse whatsoever. I'm just a little bit mindful that he does obviously have a few issues. The numbers. The numbers on the weekend were very impressive over the last 400, last 200. Slow tempo race, he got back, he was along the fence tracking Bon Joy. Lucy Fiores has produced one of the great rides there at the top of the straight, just to bring him to the outside and get him clear galloping room. But look, he's done all he can. And you're trying to almost view this through the lens of what price is he going to be in some of these features going forward. He's going to be meeting better horses than what he saw there on the weekend. And he's going to find better tempo. I'm still just mindful in the back of my mind. He didn't have the best of things in that northerly. He did start $2.50 or so against Cosmic Crusader. So it's a great SP profile. But he did have a little bit of a hip and shoulder. And then he gave up the ghost and was a very fast tempo race. It was a long preparation and all of that. But you still need to see these horses come out and produce figures on a very fast, brutal tempo. And obviously a horse like Cosmic Crusader can do that. Can King of Light do that? I'm not sure. Maybe you won't have to, though, this preparation. But I'm anticipating if, say, a horse like Pride of Jenny rocks up, well, all of a sudden the northerly is going to be a good horse. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. It could be run at a very fast tempo. But does that mean they maybe zag and go back to a gold rush? There's all these options available for him. So he is obviously very good.
Speaker 2I tell you he's very good, hot and high. Her record says that. Eight starts, seven wins.
Speaker 9Yeah, look, she is very good. And look, that, just going through her numbers this morning, that's as good as she's gone first up. It's just shy of her personal best. So she's improved. And, yeah, look, the inside wasn't exactly the place to be there on the weekend. And I was obviously playing at Sweet. Just at the price. And there was market support for that runner. And on the turn, I almost thought, well, I could almost have, you know, the entire account on playing at Sweet. She was just travelling so well. And hot and high was under pressure. But once she found that gap in the straight and she was just able to balance up, I think that's probably the key thing. Once she was able to balance herself up, she's got a really good point-to-point speed. And she can put herself into the race. And that's going to take her a fair way. So, again, another four-year-old that's just got a lot of scope, a lot of improvement to come, you'd say, just given that that was first up. And, look, it was just an even tempo. If they go quicker, I think she probably can handle that as well from what we've seen in the past. So, look, she's one that obviously stamps herself. She's going to be short pretty much every time she goes to the races or at least, you know, the top couple in the market. So, yeah, she's got a lot in her favour going forward.
Speaker 2Beautiful. Horses that we need to follow, mate?
Speaker 9The run of Awesome Boy behind Hot and High was just ridiculous. I honestly don't know how the horse still managed to keep going. If he got clear run, he might have even won. And so, Awesome Boy was one of the big flashing lights. So, I thought London's image was really good. I know I was keen on her going into the race and, look, worse in midfield, you know, through a wide line. Not necessarily her go, given she's got the ability to roll forward. But I thought that was a very impressive first up run for her. And clearly, there was plenty to come. The market didn't want her. And, yeah, the way that she hit the line, I thought that was a good indication for her.
Speaker 2Good on you, Pete. Thanks for that, mate. And did you go to Caulfield on Saturday?
Speaker 9I did. I don't know if the internet turned up for me, though. I'm still trying to connect. Get a bit on. But, yeah, Cosmic Crusader, I think he just found one better on the day. But I thought for his first run at 2,400, that was a very, very good effort. Does he go to the Cox Blake G? Have we heard?
Speaker 2I reckon he will. No, we haven't heard. I think Bob's going to confirm that tomorrow. Yeah. But history tells you Bob doesn't mind backing up his horses. So, I reckon, yeah, he's more likely than not.
Speaker 9Perfect. I'm looking forward to Saturday. I think a bit of rain forecast potentially Friday night, Saturday morning. So, obviously. Who knows? With the flippers on.
Speaker 2So, do you know what? I'm bearing myself from trying to predict what the weather's doing on a Monday heading towards the Saturday. There's just no point anymore. So, why bother? There's two months that can go wrong. Good on you, Pete. Cheers, Gareth. There's Pete Anthonis looking back there at WA on Saturday. Trent Mason, how it's been everywhere he joins us now.
Speaker 10G'day, Trent. Morning, G.
Speaker 2Now, what have you learned today?
Speaker 10Especially from a Cox Plate perspective. Yeah, so I had a good chat to Jack Turnbull from the Kiramar Stable. They have two confirmed at this stage, Land Legend and Light Infantry Man. Land Legend is Ethan Brown. Light Infantry Man is Harry Coffey. No decision as yet. They were having a meeting this morning to determine whether any of their Caulfield Cup runners will join that pair in Saturday's Cox Plate. So, I speak to Royal Supremacy, Zaran, St. George and Middle Earth.
Speaker 2All right, Ben. Cosmic Crusader, they'll make up their decision tomorrow. But Bob will just say, I don't know. We'll see how he pulls up. I reckon he'll go to the Cox Plate. What do you think?
Speaker 10Yeah, I think he'll go too, especially with the forecast of rain on the day on Saturday. It makes it tough for Liam at Cape this week, doesn't it? About 30 degrees and fine every day up until Saturday.
Speaker 2No, nightmare. Nightmare.
Speaker 10Between 1 and 20 on Saturday. So, he has to water during the week because if you don't get that rain, obviously, on Saturday, you're cooked. So, yeah, tough for the track curator there on Saturday.
Speaker 2Beautiful. A few horses going to the pack.
Speaker 10Yeah, a few horses going to the paddock. Blue Door in Sydney, St. Lee Dancer, who did a tremendous job. She's only 435 kilos, the Thousand Guineas winner. Some news out of OTI. Diamus might go to the Empire Rose, coming out of the Thousand Guineas on the weekend. There you go. She could just see three-year-old Philly. Small Fry runs in the Geelong Cup for Joseph O'Brien and OTI on Wednesday. Miss Waititi, the one-time Oaks favourite, has gone for a spell. She was very ordinary there. On Saturday, might have just all come too soon for her. They're going to give her a good spell and bring her back for the autumn.
Speaker 2Now, just having a look at the Geelong horses that have accepted so far, and bear with me, it's going to be a really good Geelong Cup. The Tassie Stasva, Vauban, the Euphrates, Wooden Vernie, Barkley Square, One Smooth Operator, Solcombe, Torrezzino, Point of Law, Valiant King, Lit Steel, Small Fry, Man's All Blue, Omni Man, Jennifer Moody. Who's hurry? Carrie Vegas, Jack, and Sapphire Siren. That's one of the best Geelong Cups we've ever seen.
Speaker 10Yeah, very strong. Yeah. Spoke to Jack about Point of Law this morning. They've obviously got high hopes for this horse. I saw him have a spin at Werribee on Thursday of last week. Kieran was out there to have a look. Yeah, he's a nice horse. He was a little bit fresh, but now looking forward to seeing him make his debut in Australia.
Speaker 2Yeah, and it was a sad day as well on Saturday, mate. Obviously, there you were reporting what was happening and unfolding. Um, but to lose a horse like a, I hope he wins there. Um, in a cool field cup yeah you feel for everyone involved that not like chris waller and his team and especially the the year-long family that loved that mare as well and a lot of her and a lot of people in new zealand um that had a great bond with i hope he wins because that's where she started off her career
Speaker 10yeah absolutely no it's very tough uh scenes there on saturday on one hand you had gavin bedge good and his team reveling in the glory of the biggest win of his career and then you look down the other end of the track and got two horses on the track and two jockeys as well on our immediate thoughts with them and one thing i do want to say is um i want to give a special shout out to john kanga who he was simply remarkable there on saturday the way he just rushed to be by the aid and he's very close with john mcneil but i don't think it would have mattered if it was any other jockey he just rushed to um give them assistance and do whatever he could and he then drove the boys to hospital and uh stuck with them for most of the night so and he was reporting on x yesterday on updating people on their condition so um just in terms of you know an administrator and he's no longer an official role with the mrc just to be so proactive and get information back i thought it was first
Speaker 2class and mark sarah yeah well said mark sarah and john mcneil it's um amazing but they are set to be riding on saturday um tough individuals so there
Speaker 10you go yeah mark sarah in true sarah fashion yesterday put out a message showing his back he's a bit stiff and sore but nothing that a cold glass of champagne won't fix so um that's the uh the best medicine for mzara and um this is his time of year to shine so you wouldn't put it
Speaker 2past him great news to half yours is in fine spirits calvin mcavoy telling me this morning um he's most likely he'll be heading for a break um so yeah most likely i i think they're still making up that decision but um he's in good spirits and um which is terrific to hear as well after that fall on saturday yep
Speaker 10just a couple of other snippets gee well uh you've got me um spoke to jason walsh from godolphin on saturday after attempted one the everest and he said they're really uh going to give strong consideration to running her up the straight in the champion sprint they haven't green lighted it as yet they'll have a think about it but i want to give her a look at the straight with a view to the autumn and then a potential international campaign down the track so that'd be great if we could see her at flemington on champions day she's now a dollar 60 favorites and jason walsh said she's up there in terms of the best sprinters they've had um in his time with godolphin going back to the champion sprint and she's up there in terms of the best to 2009 alongside Seapoint and Tent Iris. So such a high opinion of that mare. Jamie Mallum suspended on the Everest Day. She will appeal that suspension. She's hoping to ride to Tono Glow in the Cornwall Stud States.
Speaker 2Good on you, mate. Thanks for that, Trent.
Speaker 10Good on you, mate.
Speaker 2There's Trent Mason out of there. We'll take a break. The means test. It might be the best ever means test today. They are fired up. Wayne's coming off the long run like shy back to back in the day. So Johnny O'Neill and Wayne Hawks to join me next.
Speaker 1The Monday Means Test with Wayne Hawks and John O'Neill.
Speaker 2Time for the Monday Means Test, yes. Hello to you, Wayne Hawks. Morning. Morning, Gareth Giddy Uphall. And hello to you, Johnny O'Neill. Well, you did tip it.
Speaker 11You did tip it, Hawksy. You did say it. I did say it was the second best horse in the world. I've had so much rubbish thrown on me this week. And there you go.
Speaker 2You know when you've got your little shoebox, you keep all the receipts? Wayne's been trying to find that shoebox and he has. So we'll get to that as the morning unfolds. You talk crap.
Speaker 11I don't know what you've done between weeks, but jeez, you've trimmed up again. Look at you. Wayne's had a bit more weight. Look at you. He's had a cracker. I haven't, actually.
Speaker 2The Giddy Up hat. We've got more hats now. They were sold out. So this is the official merch.
Speaker 11You got one of those, Hawksy? No. I can't get one either. And I've got a head for a hat. Yes. Everyone says I've got no hair. I need a hat. What is that hat? That is our hat.
Speaker 12You don't like it? You're kidding. No. Mate, I wouldn't wear that to a shit fight. What do you mean by that? Well, you know what? I probably wouldn't be invited, but if I was, and I also say that is not the hat.
Speaker 11That is the hat. Wayne, with the weight you've lost, that hat would be too big for your head. Yes. Your head's getting small. Anyway, let's get-
Speaker 2Have a little peek on it. Hello, I'm Gareth Hall.
Speaker 11Let's get stuck into the King's Gambit. You started it. Looks like Alfred E. Newman this morning. I don't know what he looks like.
Speaker 2Let's get stuck in the King's Gambit. What a day it was on Saturday. We had the running of the Everest to kick off proceedings, and I couldn't believe what I was seeing, but Kying Rising got beat by Tempted. It was a great run by Tempted, and Kying Rising nearly got there. One more boundary was in front, but the race had it all, and the talking point after the race is, should Zach Purton be more aggressive with Kying Rising? Should he be? Yeah. Did he do enough in the early part? We'll discuss all this as the morning unfolds. And Tempted, she just continues that rise. She had gate one, and Chad Schofield proved that he is a big-time rider. He gave that an absolute peach. I know he had gate one, but he got that horse to travel. He put her in the best spot, and he couldn't believe it when I had a chat to him this morning. He was in front of Kying Rising at the halfway mark, and from there, he said that he thought he was in the driving seat, and Tempted did the rest. And then the Caulfield Cup. Just so many mixed emotions. I was watching it from Sydney, and you knew there was a nasty fall, which involved two really good horses, and two jockeys went down, and I hope he wins, and half yours, and then you were thinking about John McNeil, and also Mark Zara. And then the story with Kingswood. It was never on the track. Three wide without. Recover. And continued this dramatic rise of Gavin Bedgcood, who lived his dream to win a Caulfield Cup. And then we learned of the news that a Hopi win had to be put down, and the devastation there from the Waller camp and New Long. And we're worried about the jocks, Mark Zara and John McNeil, because the races were put back to what the last race went at 10 to 7. And then half yours. It was great to see a social media update when I was in Sydney, and you watched him. Heading back to the tie-ups. Yeah, so it was just mixed responses, mixed feelings there after watching that Caulfield Cup. But they tell me Mark Zara and John McNeil are a strong chance to ride on Saturday, and half yours is in good spirits this morning. So, yeah, it was a great day, but yeah, it was tough to watch that Caulfield Cup, Wayne.
Speaker 12Yeah, obviously, you don't like to see that at any, any stage in the proceedings. And you know what? It doesn't happen very often. For how many races, not just race meetings, for how many races that we put on around the nation, it's just a coincidence that it happens in a few of the big races, and it has happened in some of the big races. And while we're talking on it, I don't know whether it's the right thing to do with Racing Victoria hiding the vision, because at the end of the day, they've cut it out from the 400 to the 200. Now, if you really want to go and find the vision, number one, you'll find it. Number two, if there's a multi-car pileup somewhere today, and it's going to be on the news tonight, they don't close the road down. There's a dotted white line between you and the person next to you. So, the end result is, unfortunately, this does happen. And you know what? For the way that our tracks are, the circumference of them, we probably should have more. So, my point is, we do such a good job, and the jockeys do such a good job out there, and it's, you know what? There's always going to be the do-gooders, going to come out and rah, rah, rah. But, I mean, they're not. These do-gooders are not out there going off at the government for having. They are with the potholes, but they're not talking about the dotted line between me coming to you at 100 kilometres an hour, and there's only about a metre between us, is it? So, it doesn't happen very often, and you know what? It makes you sick. I mean, you just look away. And, I mean, I haven't watched it because I looked away, and then I haven't gone back to watch it. Truthfully, Johnny was talking to me before we came on air, and that's why I went back to watch the replay, that I knew that. They were very lucky. that it actually had disappeared. So, you know what? As Gerard Waitley said once before, you're messing with history, because at the end of the day, it's there, and it should be there for everyone to see. It's a horse race. They're animals. This does happen, unfortunately, but you know what? It happens very, very, very rarely. It's just that, like, you don't want it to happen.
Speaker 2You don't want this to happen on any day, but especially in a corporate car.
Speaker 12But doesn't that happen in a Formula One Grand Prix, where Grand Prix drivers have gotten hurt before and things like that? Yeah, 100%. So, it does. It happens. I mean, it's the nature of the beast. So, it doesn't happen very often.
Speaker 11Yeah. I think the thing to add to is, look, we ride, and I'm not saying they don't ride competitively around the world. They do, but we ride much tighter here. They ride tighter in Hong Kong as well. But our tracks are tighter, Johnny. They are. They are. That is true, Hawksy. That's true. But the majority of international horses that come over have generally come out of fields of six and seven and eight. Happy to sit three deep, four deep with cover. A lot of those races have got mile straights as well by the time they straighten. So, there's plenty of room, Hawksy, for those horses. Sure, the track circumferences here must have something to do with it as well. But we do ride so competitively. We do ride so tight. You know, you've got 18 horses that are 500 kilos plus with jockeys that are 50 to 60 kilos riding in those races. And you've only got. have one horse lay in or one horse make a mistake, and when you're riding that tight, it should happen way, way more than what it
Speaker 12does. This hardly ever happens.
Speaker 2We might go to our first of our categories, and I'll get to the Koeing Rising and the Everest and the Caulfield Cup, but we'll get straight into the stewards' room. Mr. Hawks and Mr. O'Neill, can you please report to the stewards' room? So the stewards are going to have an inquiry into this for Wayne. Yep. What do you think will happen?
Speaker 12Well, what has to happen is that the jockeys have to meet in the stewards' room. And the reason why it's not on, you know, you couldn't Skype it today, is obviously the stewards will want the jockeys to be able to involve John McNeill and Mark Zara to be able to give evidence, because the stewards have to be comfortable with everything. So there's two pretty important pieces of information. Now, John McNeill might say, got no idea what happened. I remember coming to the home corner, and after that, I woke up and, you know, I was on the ground. But that's okay. That's okay from the point of view of that is his evidence. But the stewards have to. conduct an inquiry so the next time they'll all be able to be together who knows it might be cocks plate day i don't know whether boys will be riding at geelong wednesday but they'll be hoping we said they're you said they're hoping to ride next uh next saturday it's um on cocks plate day so maybe it maybe it's going to be there but obviously the stewards have to do their due diligence why does it
Speaker 2have to be at a race meeting when there's something so significant like this why can't they do it i mean i get the impression
Speaker 11they should this should be done today yeah and people should be sitting down and looking at i know a horse has lost its life which is absolutely horrendous but if if you do go back and i'm sure that you can get the footage i saw the fall mark zara went over i've got no idea i mean i text straight after the race will born like my god he's the luckiest bloke in the history of the world he went over those handlebars and it could have been absolutely disastrous and the vest saved
Speaker 2him because that horse hope
Speaker 11stood on him so so no matter what happens here these things should be happening on monday and and if the jockeys are fit because it's because it's unfair now to think that if the interference was caused by aggressive riding and i don't know i can't say that um if it was whoever caused that yep doesn't get a right to get a stay for the next four weeks and ride over the carnival they should get they
Speaker 12should get time tomorrow okay okay but but no one no one's no one's gonna no one's gonna have a stay for four weeks so the the most they're gonna have to wait is to saturday so at the end of the day though if
Speaker 11they do wait till saturday hooks you though they can take rides the following week and they're booked and then they get a stay but is that correct yes so so they could ride derby day hawksy you're telling me now so but the thing is just well
Speaker 12yeah but what i've been told is that there's no no no one to blame anyway i mean i don't know if there is or not but i'm just saying for the people have you seen it no so you haven't well you know what yeah i've seen a horse laying all of a sudden i saw a half yours go and then i was watching that then i then i saw a jive but because it's you you got to go back and watch the replay i mean you know you can't you couldn't no one could give any evidence hypothetically off that watching it live so i thought you might have watched the replay for us today no i watched it 25 times and i'm
Speaker 11telling you green space is hung in badly i don't want to hang in badly yeah right green space is hung in very badly at one stage of the race and severely interfered with king's valley and severely interfered with zaran that was getting off the fence on the back of st george now whether that had anything to do with the fall i'm not sure i'm not saying that and i'm sure i mean i'm sure rachel wasn't trying to trying to dart back in and cut people out i think james johnson yeah she
Speaker 2ran in slightly and james johnson was the one who was the one who was the one who was the one who was run into green spaces and then that made
Speaker 11him um lose balance and then the interference okay and then zaran same interference off the back of sitting got off the fence on the back of st george with room was about ready to unleash and got pushed i think he reckons he could have won
Speaker 12off in his second but i i didn't watch it and someone will say why didn't you watch it excuse me i did well i didn't watch it because i don't want to see that i don't want to see that as a horse lover that i don't care if it's my not my audience i don't want to see that i don't want to whatever it's not what i want to see i've seen i've seen enough of it in my life that those things just stick in my memory for forever and i think i'm a better person for not not not seeing that again so but hang on so when it's all said and done if someone is to blame that that he or she is going to get their just desserts coming up now mark zara drove past the waterloo drove his wife was driving and i'm sure it was them and he was in the passenger seat this morning now he could be going to the physio the chiro the bloody dentist i mean how do you know he hasn't lost half a tooth i mean yeah so so to be fair saying that it should be today well you know at the end at the end of the day i mean jai mcneil was in hospital and he was in there okay if the jockeys
Speaker 2are right to give evidence today it should be today i don't understand why it isn't especially when it's such a big case or a big hearing like the caulfield cup because it could have just been a racing incident and when you've had a look at the video a couple of times and you've got to hear i think it's important for this particular inquiry that you need the evidence from the jocks it won't
Speaker 12no and you do need the evidence from the jockeys because they're the two involved and as i said even if jai mcneil says your honor i don't remember a thing that's his evidence that's okay there's no problem i think my
Speaker 2information that he does remember okay
Speaker 12okay but i'm just saying hypothetically jai said he didn't remember that's okay but it's still not going to change what's actually going to go down if someone's going to get in trouble they will still get in trouble so does it need to be rushed forward to today i don't know i mean i reckon i don't know whether jai mcneil could be stuff going there and marks are either let's be honest with you i don't know about it i mean you know that they've got to get themselves right so the first thing you're going to say is they need to be looked after first yes they could probably do it the next day the next day but they're trying to get back and ride work but johnny's
Speaker 2point is if someone's caused interference that's caused a fall on a call for a cup um and they get an opportunity to ride on this saturday or the saturday after because the inquiry's pushed back that doesn't make that and i don't know it's the way it's the way it always been but it doesn't mean to say it's no the jockeys have got a big day on saturday and then they've got to worry about this inquiry
Speaker 12that look look that's that's always something and i've i've i've never been a jockey and so i don't know what it's like but what shits me right off is when the jockeys laid out for the next race and you go where you been you go i've been the steward and i've been talking about another race earlier in the day or whatever and i'm thinking well you should have your head on about my race not looking at a previous race or the cock or the corfell cup last saturday so there is there is some there is some merit in that but but this is their job they are accustomed to it the jockeys are used to it they deal with this in and out the stewards room like you know you go in now the change rooms that's all day every day so they are used to that environment let's say i i don't love it i mean but then jockeys will say well we don't want to stay back till after last then have three hours of inquiries after the last race either so there's there is a balance but my mail is is that no one no one will get into trouble yeah
Speaker 2we're going to take a break and come back with plenty more right after this this is the monday means test join the conversation text
Speaker 1us on 0499 736 736 live across australia this is giddy up with gareth hall
Speaker 2um plenty of text messages coming through well said wayne why are we hiding a racing incident that has that has happened are they ashamed of the sport they want us to gamble on it and get involved in the sport but they want to hide the unfortunate situations that happen in the
Speaker 12sport no they want the that's from semi-highland do good is not to see it yeah but at the end of the day if you want the footage
Speaker 2you'll be able to find it yeah um hi gareth no judgment or commentary about the caulfield cup but should claiming apprentices be permitted to ride in group races let alone group ones that's just a thought that's uh you can't have that ab some of the great stories come from apprentices winning on the big stage well it was
Speaker 12always like mooney valley you're back in the day with the trots you'd have 100 drives before you came to mooney valley i don't think there's a bad thing from a pecking order to get to to get to a stage myself
Speaker 11yeah i don't think we're making any calls on jockeys we're just saying that there's a significant incident that has happened they need to work and they'll get the stewards and they'll work out what the situation is if the horse is laying under pressure in some instances i would imagine there's not much a jockey can do about it just quickly it's
Speaker 12not just that then the stewards panel that was there on saturday are the same people that have to front up as well on the yes yes yes all right then we'll
Speaker 2take a break and come back and have a look at that performance by kingswood oh we don't have to tell a break yeah there we go i've got to get that right one day kingswood was very good kingswood yeah herculean drew a terrible terrible
Speaker 12barry and was three wide the uh the entire four wide five wide six wide fair nick him yeah my horse was three wide it'd get beat a furlong and uh and they'd be still you'd be walking off the track by now me too it was it was a performance like shocking winning the melbourne cup yeah herculean the julian the one the one two things about it they backed off in the race and if you're going fast you're in trouble sitting three wide back and off you you've got a better chance if you're wide facing no no no no i'm not i'm not disputing that mate it's hard to do in a 1200 or 1400 if you sit three wide in a 1200 meter race around warwick farm or around caulfield same thing one long straight around the home corner you normally don't it was a
Speaker 2massive effort it was a massive effort we'll come back and have a look at the replay and i want you to to talk through it um straight after this break here on giddy up this is the monday means test gareth hall wayne hawks and johnny o'neill with you
Speaker 1join the conversation text us on 0 4 double 9 7 3 6 7 3 6 live across australia this is giddy up
Speaker 2with gareth hall welcome back to giddy up gareth hall johnny o'neill and wayne hawks with you this is the monday means test let's have a look at this call for your cut with kingswood who was so dominant he was off the track three wide with no cover um in the end it was a proactive ride by johnny allen because he had that terrible gate and he made sure that he put that horse in the race unfortunately that is close that's as close as he could get um and then he didn't panic and he let that horse find his rhythm and he came off that fast run might and power stakes the week before and he was too good way it
Speaker 12was well it was a bad bad barrier and uh he's one of the very very few that did overcome a bad barrier and win and you know like he was three wide the entire he was three wide the entire five and six wide come in the corner now we can't watch the replay because here we are yeah we can well they're not going to show you the home corner no because his ride from the 600 on well before that they backed off and that's what helps because if you're three wide facing the breeze if they're not going hard it's not so bad yes it's a caulfield cup and yeah it's a mile and a half but he let all those horses go cosmic crusader was inside of him johnny allen he let him go he let him go let him go well most people are upping them for the rent and away they'd go and i mean he just sat and sat and sat and sat and sat mate you see good you see good rides that was ridiculous what he did from the 600 meters onwards i i think it's one of the great greatest rides of the year from the 600 meters i i thought it was unbelievable because you the natural reaction is to go and he just waited and waited and waited and then he powered to the line it was um i'll tell you what won the
Speaker 11race for him those horses taking off ridiculously early but going around and giving no no no that's what i'm saying and just giving him just a little bit of cover if he had to sit out there and kept working the way he was he just had a bit of cover out there with those horses going early that was only 600 from home though yeah but i know i know that but he still had a chance just to and then when he unleashed that's one of the most herculean efforts i've ever seen in a caulfield cup the other
Speaker 2part that helped him when you have a look at the the sectionals that are coming through is that jamie spencer did pull out the anchors so three wide without cover it wasn't a hectic tempo and then the others took off but that's my point yeah if
Speaker 12you if you're three wide in a fast run race you're in diabolical straights but uh but the end result is to sit three wide in any race these days in a good a good strong tough race normally you get busted and get beat a furlong and a half so it was uh an amazing amazing performance and as i said that ride from the 600 meters find the footage don't go to racing.com find the footage and you will uh you will see it it was just incredible
Speaker 11what he did and just going through the race if you look at it i thought st george got held up at a really crucial time and ran second ran really well um in for jar looked like it had improved from the run for me i had a look at it in the mounting yard it'll definitely come on was suited by the way the track was racing being forward but ran well and will no doubt run well in the cup uh they cost themselves a cox plate win by running cosmic crusader so you know i mean i think i think it was a sit and he could be the forgotten horse heading into the cox play please stop it king's valley was huge czar ran was huge treasure the treasure of the moment ran really well considering was off a reasonably disappointing run and i thought um middle earth who's a 3200 meter horse one of ours run really well the rest of them hang on hang on you're missing one bye-bye you're missing one
Speaker 12which one jamie spencer what was his performance how did he ride it come on i actually saw him i don't care what you i don't care what you're catching i don't care what you saw him what did
Speaker 11you think of his ride well i thought he went forward like he was going to i thought he sort of controlled the race at a reasonably slow tempo he gave it a pretty good gave it a pretty good ride and the horse probably wasn't good enough it might be a wet track of that horse i
Speaker 12think yeah i think it's a good horse i think it goes good but what are you saying about cosmic crusader gareth your uncle bob did he get it right or wrong
Speaker 2well do you know what no no did he
Speaker 12get it right or wrong well honestly he got
Speaker 2it wrong because he didn't win the caulfield cup but it was a great ride by william pike in the early part to land from where he did outstanding but was started 350 in the cox plate but maybe maybe it was too good of a ride maybe maybe he's a horse that just doesn't like to be this close way no it was a perfect ride it was a jet it was a mile and
Speaker 12a half it was a mile and a half race you're you're talking about him in in shorter races getting back further it's a mile and a half he drew a crap barrier he jumped he didn't go in theory he didn't go forward he just jumped he came across he's like one one after he's gone 300 meters he's given the best ride ever was swinging at the 600 yeah kingswood's outside of you traveling well but you just want to be on cosmic crusader coming to the corner and he to me he gassed out and didn't run the 24 yeah and i and i think
Speaker 11the track also helped him because you it was very very difficult to make ground from the back so he was able he put himself there and he was able to hang on as a
Speaker 2result maybe it was too firm for him or he didn't see out the 2400 meters because he was coming again on the line but myself
Speaker 12it was probably more the 20 2400 meters because he was coming again on the line but myself it was probably more the 20 2400 meters but you know what you get the chance of the corfield cup very rarely and then obviously if you if you if you ran through the line in the corfield cup you you've got a massive uh carrot to say let's head to the do you back up in the cop's plate with him it's
Speaker 2going to be a fast run race
Speaker 12you'd have to put you'd have look it might
Speaker 2be a slow track as
Speaker 12a as a horse trainer you have to the only person that can that can tell you that is the trainer if if your horse is hard and tough and that's what you'd half prepared him yes it's there to do if it's an afterthought they never win he's had five or six runs now going into it he was up he was up early in august up and ready and cracking that was his race on saturday you had to run in for mine you had to run in one or the other and i did say i'd run in the in the in the cox plate but i understand why they ran in the corfield cup because not everyone wants to win the cox plate i mean someone might say i want to win a corfield cup more than a cox plate because the other thing is as i said you've got the carrot if you run through the line in the corfield cup you go you know what i'm going to win the corfield cup i'm going to win the corfield cup first tuesday november mate i'm never going to have another chance with a great horse to have a runner in the melbourne cup that's got a realistic chance so let's have a crack so i reckon good on bob for throwing the dice and having a crack and he didn't disgrace himself yeah he ran well i thought i thought i thought he ran amazing but i don't reckon that pike had him too close because sitting back he did no work to get there now if you had worked hard to get up get across get in and then i've got over racing and all that sort of stuff you could you could argue that but he got there so easy and did such a good job william pike from the uh from the get-go and that's why the wizard is well that's why he's called the wizard let's be honest because he is a whiz and uh and the horse ran as best as he could on the uh on the day
Speaker 11the rain comes it'll run yeah i would have thought i would have thought and you got to
Speaker 2give credit to we haven't had a chat about gavin bedggood like he took this horse over and had his first run with kingswood um after coming from maddie raymond stable um and it was the um i think it was the 24th of september 2024 that was his first run 28th of september and he won a benchmark 78 and then he won a coonji after that and now he's a caulfield cup champ
Speaker 12i don't think it's going to get out as the greatest caulfield cup in the history of history but one of the biggest ever wins without doubt but i tell you what i don't think you would care he's got the trophy he's got the money i agree with that but you know what they're these races are a bit thin and that's why you need to be in it to win it and have a crack because they're they are so hard to win i mean it's like that day we were there at flemington and someone said oh it's a weak group one a weak weak stakes race james cummings spun ran and said just tell me when that is because i'm happy to go and win those weak stakes races because i've never seen a weak one yet so you can only beat what's there to be beaten but i wouldn't say i wouldn't say the format of that's probably going to stack up to be the wow factor johnny
Speaker 11yeah i think i mean he's obviously a great trainer he's had a 10 year old get beaten four or five lengths beyond autumn glow in a how much how much was that race worth the other night five yeah that
Speaker 2was well that was just well placed because there's only five horses in the right i get it but he won
Speaker 11the seymour cup last week he's on fire yeah he was really good for his extraordinary luck i mean i think they bought it during the weekend or two weeks ago a couple of weeks ago yeah for not much money and it was sold within 10 seconds really well there you go so i think um you know he's obviously dealing with a lot of stock that has been recycled and run he seems to be able to get those horses to improve a lot um and you know i think probably for him to get to the next step now he's got to get all those owners that are wanting to buy those horses to go and support him go back in and buy a heap of yearlings you know so that's what he needs so johnny we had
Speaker 2him on beyond the barriers and we were having a chat about his he's he's rising the trading ranks and obviously he learned from robbie lang and spent time with robbie griffiths before that and he's got a great record with tried horses and but he says like he can't get like it's difficult for him to sell his healings because everyone's got him pigeonholed as tried horses and he goes it's frustrating he goes i'm proving i can get these horses to do great things after getting them as tried horses but no one really will trust me in getting these he's not going to
Speaker 12get that 600 000 yearlings but how do you get there but he'll get
Speaker 11there he just needs to be you know consistent he needs to make sure he's presenting the best way he possibly can all of the time and work hard on the ownership group that he's building that are enjoying a lot of success i mean sometimes fundamentally Yeah, you go.
Speaker 12Sometimes you don't need to. I'll call it Joe Pride. And no one's going to say he's not a bloody good trainer, but Joe Pride is not known to being the two-year-old trainer. It's as simple as that. And I mean, Joe bobs up at the yielding sales, but I mean, he's not a prominent yielding sale buyer and things like that. But I'll tell you what.
Speaker 11Give Joe Pride the right horse on the right day, he'll kick your butt. I mean, I don't know Benji very well, but what I will say is that he's got a wonderful success rate with these tried horses. He's a really hard worker. And when it's all said and done, the proof's in the pudding. Go back and have a look at the results he drives. So he's got, I don't know how many owners, but there'd be hundreds of owners in those horses. So he's just got to take them on the yearling journey and he'll get them there. And he is a hard worker.
Speaker 12You love to see more, you love to bend to go, you love to kill more. And he's there saddling and strapping and having a go. So he's there at most of the meetings. He's not centre foreman. He's going himself.
Speaker 2So Johnny, is there a Melbourne Cup winner out of that Caulfield Cup this year?
Speaker 11I think it's interesting when you say that because. I mean, I was really impressed with Zoran's run. I know that people will be disappointed, but.
Speaker 2A lot of people thought he went under.
Speaker 11But he got, you know, he was sort of sixth the fence on the back of St. George, tracking beautifully. Then when they took off, and I'm not quite sure who took off early, but whoever took off early turned it into a lunatic asylum way, way, way too early from home, which gave. Well, they were walking. They had to do something. Well, I get it. I get it. Then you blame the jockeys if they don't. How did those horses go?
Speaker 2Tell me how the ones went. Sol of Spain was pretty good under the circumstances. How far did it get beat? Not far. I think he beat home Middle Earth.
Speaker 11He was back just having a look though, so. Yeah. You let him do that? Well, he was going to win if he could win, but he was always get back in that race and you couldn't make any ground. So the horses that I think.
Speaker 2Sol of Spain was beaten 4.7 lengths.
Speaker 11Okay. So I think the horses that can go on are definitely St. George. Definitely the horse that ran third. Envejar. Envejar. Definitely Kings Valley on the basis that the whack it got wasn't too bad and it pulls up okay. Zah ran definitely. And outside of that.
Speaker 2Wine Dark Sea? No, please stop it.
Speaker 11Middle Earth, that's it. You don't want any of the others. No. No, that's it. So it'll be interesting to see outside of that. I think you're going to. You'll see a good one go around Wednesday in Geelong.
Speaker 12Yeah, we'll get to that.
Speaker 11Yeah. It'll win the Cup.
Speaker 12I say it every year, but I'm going to say it again. Should last Saturday have been Cox, Plate Day and then next Saturday, Caulfield Cup Day? Why can't we play with it? Why can't we try it once? Do you know what? Uncle Bob would be happy if that was the case. Michael Browse coming on. He would have won the Cox Plate. That's a perfect analogy there.
Speaker 2Yeah. Michael Browse coming on at 11 o'clock. I'm looking forward to that way. And you're going to ask him the tough questions. Have you got your notes ready to go?
Speaker 12Here's my book and I don't have any notes.
Speaker 2I don't have any notes. You can ask him after 11 o'clock, would you be interested in changing the dates for the Cox Plate? It'll suit the tracks.
Speaker 12Yeah. Jeez, we've got some text messages. I'm ready. I'm ready.
Speaker 2We haven't even got the cane rising yet, but I want to. He got beat anyway. Yes. I want to talk about Autumn. I want to talk about Autumn Glow and because Charles will front second while we're on the Cox Plate conversation. This is what Autumn Glow did on Saturday afternoon to win a five horse King Charles there on the weekend.
Speaker 3Come around the turn. God's windows railing through. Just folk turns in front of Miller to rise. Here she comes, Autumn Glow. And then the twinkling of an eye, she put pay to the leaders and Chaya Wolf being wound up three lengths away. She's got 200 to go, Autumn Glow. Chaya Wolf is chipping into the margin only to a minor extent. Autumn Glow really opening up the shoulders. Chaya Wolf's trying his heart out, but Autumn Glow is going to win the King Charles the third and land her fifth group one.
Speaker 2So she was awesome, Autumn Glow. She never really got out of second gear, but Charles Wolf has been confirmed to come. Come to the Cox Plate. He's at 550. Aliana, 450. Sir Dillius, 450. Wall Woven, 450. So three equal favorites now with bet 365 for the Cox Plate. Charles Wolf at 550. Birdman, nine. Blind Rays, 11. Cosmic Crusader, 13. Light Infantryman, 17. There's still no decision on Autumn Boy. He's at 20 to one. Land Legend, $26. And then Attrition at 50 to one. So what are the top four favorites? Aliana, Sir Dillius, Wall Woven, Autumn Glow. Equal favorites at 450. And then Charles Wolf at 550.
Speaker 11It's going to be a race. It's a race this week. I mean, this is the exciting thing from an owner's perspective, to be honest, Talksy, is that we've got a Cox Plate this year where you don't have an absolute standout horse like an Autumn Glow or like a Shiza Alibi. Via Sustena. And like a Via Sustena who won last year. So from an owner's perspective, everyone goes in with a realistic hope of winning the race, which I think. I think makes it more exciting, probably not if you owned, you know, the champion horses that we've just mentioned, those three. But so this is a really open race. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a little surprise here. So we'll see. What's the surprise? I've got a little. Kinder surprise. A little kinder surprise. Tell us. Oh, look, I think, I reckon Light Inventory Man's flying. I reckon too. I reckon it's airborne, this horse.
Speaker 12And he's 2,000 metres of Flemington, Johnny. And look, he's 16, 18 dollars.
Speaker 11He's 2,000 metres of Flemington. He's had a couple of cracks in the, in Australia Cups a lot. He's won the last two and won both of them.
Speaker 12That's my point.
Speaker 11He ran second the other day and put crazy pace on behind Cosmic Crusader. And I think he's going really, really well. You know, is he up to the class of Sir Delius? Is he up to the class of Eliana? Is he up to the class of the three-year-old who looks like he's a star? Pretty good one. And to be honest, gee, Wolf, I mean, Joe Pride's done a really good job with that horse. It came back from a terrible injury. It was airborne. You were potting it all the time. And I was well and truly on the back. Get lost. And then, so he's done a really good job with that horse. And he's won two King Charles and just run second in the third. And to get beaten two and a half lengths behind the best horse in the country or in the top three horses in the country anyway, probably the best. I think it's, you know, it's got to have a chance, but it's hard to back up from those races. You've got to come down, as Hawksy said before, like if horses are specifically set for that race, the one that we all, and certainly I haven't been potting, but I've been, I'm happy to take him on is Sir Delius. But having said that, Gay has said. Yes, she was.
Speaker 12You've been potting him.
Speaker 11Yeah, well, but what I'm saying is Gay's set a very clear task and sort of programming. Of course she has. So there hasn't been any sort of moving away from what you wanted to do. Gay and Adrian have set that horse specifically for this race. So you're tipping light infantry, man. I think he's going to have a great each way hope at $17 or $18. I don't know whether he's going to win, but he is a great hope at 18 bucks each way. I think it's. And Whirlpool, I know that we're bet $365. Today, the Whirlpool, he'll be better than that because the shorties, they all jump into them and the tote prices on that Whirlpool blow out. You get an extra 10% if you're backing on the tote with bet $365. Well, there you go. Hey, I'll be tuning in there.
Speaker 2Mail is, I saw that my mail is that Sir Delius was trotting around Flemington this morning with some blinkers on, Wayne.
Speaker 12Got no idea.
Speaker 2What does that mean then?
Speaker 12It means nothing. Okay. It means nothing. Plenty of horses wear winkers and stuff like that. Yeah. And, uh, and, um, when he, what are those ear muffs, ear muffs and things like that. So who are you tipping for the Cox play? Sir Delius. Sir Delius. I think, I think he's been set for the race. First up, second up things, things, things didn't go very well at all. First up, second up, you're chasing the, uh, the mad leader 700 meters from home and probably out of his comfort zone. And I just reckon 2000 at Flemington, it's going to, uh, just going to sit him, you know, just have him absolutely spot on three-year-olds.
Speaker 11Uh, I don't know if he's going to be the only one that's going to be able to do that. I think he's going to be the only one that's going to be able to do that. I can't believe the difference in the price between blind race. Yeah, that doesn't make sense. That doesn't make sense to me. Well, we know why it is because one's trained by Trent Cussivan and Nat. I'm not, I love them. I've got horses with them, but right. If it was trained by Waller or it was trained by Ma or by Bjorn with a rah-rah, it'd be,
Speaker 12it'd be $7. Yeah. But I think it's also too, that it's a bit like when a horse wins, it's always favorite next start. And the horse that runs second can be 10 or 12 to one. It's next start. You're thinking I've only got beaten two inches to it, but you know. I was interested. Just Warwoven, he's a winner. That's one thing you can't take away from Warwoven because he is an absolute winner and he keeps winning.
Speaker 11So. But you reverse those runs in the guineas and blind race beats Warwoven. Don't worry about that. Blind race got taken on 800 from home, 600 from home. Warwoven just. Just sitting back eating a peach.
Speaker 2My, my, um, when I talked to Kieran Ma and this is what I've got in the back of my mind, I said, can the three-year-olds win a Cox Plate? Without hesitation, no.
Speaker 12I agree with Kieran. Yeah. I don't, I don't, I don't think the three-year-olds will be good enough, but, but in saying that if it's a year where you're going to have a crack with a three-year-old, if you're going into it 130% spot on, cut the BS, if you are absolutely cherry ripe and was set for this race, it's your chance. Yeah. Because it's a very, very even race, but, but in saying that. Can you win a Golden Rose? Can you then have another grand final in the, in a Caulfield Guineas? And then can you have a third grand final in the Cox Plate? Arguably you can't because, but, but he might be the exception. I mean, as I just said, he just keeps on winning, winning, winning. And in 12 months time, we might look back at Warwoven and go, holy crap, this is the best horse in the country. He is an absolute superstar, this horse, but he's going to need to be because without doing ratings, cause I don't. Whatever he ratings. I mean, if he rated the other day, he has to outperform himself for his win the other day to be competitive in the Cox Plate. So it's probably easier to say, no, they're not. not going to win than be chipping them and backing them.
Speaker 2And the race will rate through the roof because of the speed that's guaranteed in the race on Saturday with your horse, like Infantryman and Land Legend. It's 20 minutes past 10. That was our discussion on the Cox Plate. We'll come back and analyse Everest Day at Randwick. It's 22 minutes past 10. Let's relive the Everest there on Saturday afternoon.
Speaker 3Purton's opted to get onto her back there on K-Ying Rising. He's much further back than expected. Into the straight, Savvy Hulley in front. Tempted. She's showing the desire. She takes the gap and she's going after Savvy Hulley. They beat up Blue Door. Now K-Ying Rising getting into his work. And Headwall down the outside. Tempted's drawn clear by two. K-Ying Rising and Headwall, they're trying hard. Tempted two lengths clear from K-Ying Rising. Jolly Star late. Tempted clings on. And she won the Everest. Tempted beat K-Ying Rising.
Speaker 2So Tempted beats K-Ying Rising and Pauly Sebastiani. I'll go to you here, mate, because Wayne has got a few receipts. Oh, which receipt do you want? You can start.
Speaker 13Just roll the tape, Pauly. All right, let's go. This is the first receipt.
Speaker 12Beat K-Ying Rising, Wayne. She's the next to Takwa. Sit back and do what she did. And to go past those horses, she flogged them. You know what? They're not superior horses. Let's be honest and blunt about it. She is a superior, superior horse. She nearly won a Blue Diamond. She nearly won a Golden Slipper. She was dominant at three. They've looked after her. You know what? You've really got to give credit where it's due, because most people go one too many. Most owners want to go one extra. And you know what? They've backed off and they've done all the right things with her. She is a star. And to watch that horse win on Saturday, it absolutely. It absolutely just reminded me of Chautauqua, because that's what he used to do week in, week out. And that's what she's actually starting to do. And as good as what we think she is, you know what? We need to be wrapping her up even more, because we spend plenty of time on cosmic crusaders and horses like this. This horse is an absolute star. And she is obviously the only one that can take on the superstar from Hong Kong. And where is she going to be in the run compared to him? I mean, you probably want him to draw 12 and she'd be a little bit closer. But she's so dominant when she sits back off them. And I'd love these two to be going head to head with 200 metres to go. It might be the second best horse in the world. Who tipped it?
Speaker 11She's amazing. She's amazing. Amazing. I mean, you just don't run sectionals like that. And to be honest, it was just so arrogant on Saturday. Got back, tried to find a spot, couldn't do it. Just kept going back. Just kept dragging it back. I'm sitting looking, wow, you must be so confident to be doing that. So it might be the second best horse in the world. I don't think. Sprinter. No, I'm saying I think it's elite horse. She is. I think it's going to be. And I think you're right, Hawks. She is elite.
Speaker 2So that was a couple of weeks ago. And then we go, hey, wait, Wayne, you've got more.
Speaker 13There's plenty more. Do you know how long this was? Do you know how long ago this was? Six months, isn't it? This was 27 weeks ago, this receipt. Roll the tape. 27 weeks ago.
Speaker 12If Kay Rising draws barrier 12 and 12, gets caught three wide, he won't win the Everest either. He hasn't got panels on these horses. He jumped, flew across, lobbed one, won in theory in the Everest, and he won by length and a half. What did you just say then, Wayne? You can't do any more than that. No, what did you just say then? I said. I said, if Kay Rising. Yes. You know what I said. No, I didn't. What are you trying to say? I was just wondering if I heard it right. Concentrate. Concentrate. If Kay Rising is in the Everest and he draws barrier 12 and he gets posted three wide, you reckon he just still wins, do you? Probably, yep. Probably. Oh, well, you know what? You're allowed your opinion, but I don't agree. Because I don't reckon he's got 12 on us. Yes. Jolly Stars won five group ones. No, no. I think what you were saying, Hawks, even about Autumn Glow, right?
Speaker 11Wayne. What you were saying about Autumn Glow, the thing. The thing about Kay Rising is it won't get caught three deep because it's got enough pace to push forward and find a spot.
Speaker 12But hang on, what if it does? J-Mac was caught three wide on Nature Strip in an Everest and Nature Strip was the boom most of the time. Mate, barrier draws. Johnny, what happened to you? You didn't draw the right barrier. You come out sideways. You got whacked. You're out of play. Your sectionals are amazing. You run fourth or fifth and everyone goes, oh, that was crap. Well, it wasn't. You just didn't have the right run in the race. So if Kay Rising draws a. If Kay Rising draws the outside barrier and has a shocker in the run, he hasn't got laps on these horses to be able to do it. It's as simple as to be able to beat them. So same thing. I'm not bagging Kay in Rising, but he still has to have the right run in Transit because what horses can do crazy stuff? Well, there's very, very few. You see it in the lesser grades where they can be caught wide and do a bit of work and get away with it, but not at the top level. So Hawksie. Because when you go and look at every racehorse, they have to have the perfect run to win, Johnny.
Speaker 2So that's Wayne Hawks. He's just been up and about. And since Saturday, he's been like. No, you. Yeah, I've got it right.
Speaker 12That is such bullshit. Can I just tell you something? It's absolute rubbish. I was not up and about.
Speaker 11Now, be fair. For our listeners, we need the numbers for Saturday night. Saturday night? Yeah, I want the. That's one of the numbers. It was Saturday night. I need them. I need them because I'm telling you. I'm thinking Saturday night was one of the best. That was one of the greatest calls of all time. And let me. Let's say this. Hawksie did say that if it drew the outside and attempted drew in, which is exactly what happened, it drew 11 or something, attempted drew one. You did say if it got caught three deep the whole way, it couldn't win. What I will say watching the race, as we all saw, I don't think the horse ever looked comfortable at all on the weekend. He had his head on the side. And I think the point that we made earlier is that normally Zach would push forward and sit outside the leader. I'm not quite sure why he didn't do that. Only he would. He wouldn't be able to tell you that. And he obviously had ultimate confidence in the horse, but clearly you draw a gate. You don't use your gate speed, whether he had it or whether he didn't, I'm not sure. Cause he didn't look comfortable, but to consider the fact that he did sit three deep the whole way and run, run that champion mare down to a head or whatever, again, going back to what we said about Shiza Alibi the other day, it got beaten $1.40. It was a disaster. Like they're all saying it ran well, I think this is a little different in that, you know, she had every chance the other day and he didn't.
Speaker 2Zach's been quoted. He said, um, the moment we drew Barry 11, our hand was, our hand was dealt a bit. Nobody would have predicted the leaders would go as quick as they did. If I rode the ears off my horse to be up there with them, he may have collapsed and fall into a hole as well. I didn't have a choice other than to come back, pop in, give him a chance with some cover and let him finish the race off, which he did. So that's what Purton was thinking. That's what he's been quoted. Um, and that's. A Sydney morning Herald. Um, some say that he should have kept on going way.
Speaker 12Well, that's that that's easy in hindsight, but the truth is, I mean, did they have a pre-planned game? We drawn Barry 11. We've just got to take our medicine and we've just got to go back. I mean, that's what we don't know.
Speaker 2It would have been that that would have been, it wouldn't have been, no.
Speaker 11I would have thought, I would have thought they planned to sit outside the leader, but maybe they went too hard. If Zach said they went too hard, they went too hard. It was Zach's going to say that though. Yeah, I agree. But again, go back and have a look at the race. He never looked comfortable that horse. He was. He had his head on the side and he, and that's not how he races. Right? So he, so I thought he ran huge.
Speaker 12I thought he had a, he had a shocking run in transit. You, the only one that's going to know whether he really handled the track or not is Zach. One stride before the post he's got beat. Um, what do you get beat officially? He got beat officially 0.2, three of a length. Yeah. One stride past the post he's he's half a length in front. So if he wins by half a length, we're not even talking about it. We're going, oh my God, Zach's ride was amazing. It was so good. It was this, it was that, and we w we wouldn't even contemplate that. I mean, at the end of the day, last year, right? He had the perfect run. He lobbed into third. He was on the fence. He popped around, went around one or two horses and he won by length and a quarter. He didn't win by track record time. I said at this time last year, Brousser and Jimmy Starr in the premier ran way quicker time because everyone in Hong Kong kept talking about the times, the times, the times, the times, the times, times only means so much. You've got to look at the race for what the race is and last year. He had, he had the best possible race and he won good on him. And you know what? He didn't have things quite go his way on Saturday. And he's just gone down by proverbial bees. You know what? He was the best horse in the race and he is the best horse on the race. He just wasn't the best horse on the day. Now I reckon, well, before we go onto that, if you swap tempted and, uh, carrying rising barrier, it's as simple as that. I mean, you don't see what the course is. The core field cup winner did on Saturday. Hardly, hardly ever in, in any race, let alone a group one race. So he didn't have things go his way. Kay. He is not 30 links superior. If tempted was in Hong Kong and carrying wasn't she'd all, but be undefeated as well. So, you know what? He's done an amazing job. Like tempted had to travel half an hour of the races. He's had to travel 12,000 kilometers together. Right. So, you know, yeah, I agree. I agree. He's here. Went pretty big. No, no, no, no, he didn't go pretty good. He went bloody amazing and he nearly won. I mean, he didn't get flogged. He didn't get beat a furlong. I mean, one stride off the post, he was in front and two strides. I reckon he was about two or three links in front. So take nothing away from tempted. They backed off her. They didn't give her one extra run last prep. I've just set her for this race and everything's fallen into the place. And as I said, two weeks ago, we're not giving her enough credit for what she's done. Now, if you look at the market, it was a dollar 35 favorite. It was 19 to one about her. and Jimmy Starr. so she would have been odds or even money favorite i suppose on saturday if he wasn't in the race but same thing as i've always said don't be shy of one horse that's a superstar because things don't always go to plan and you know i mean but i but the funny part is with with autumn glow and black caviar and winks it's all this win win win but no one went ah that was terrible or that was so disappointing i mean i think racing was the great winner and also it's a bit like the footy any type of athletics no one wins wins wins wins wins to get through to the grand final i mean footy teams and rugby teams and what no matter what code you follow no one goes all the way through so to have the have the black caviars and the winxes and the autumn glows is is rare rare air so he's a star and you know what i really hope he comes back next year because he's earned his crack to come back next year let's hope he's in one piece let's hope he goes back to hong kong and wins uh the second sunday in december and in the 1200 up the straight and he does what he does because he's still the world's best horse his time form rating won't drop hers might go up a bit but he certainly won't drop he
Speaker 2did write better than her from that right he has to yeah
Speaker 12he ran better than she did even though she won but the name of the game is to win correct so at the end of the day we see it time and time again where wow look at that horse that was the best run in the race but it
Speaker 2didn't win the right did it hurt his legacy because no because no
Speaker 12i think i think it enhanced it yeah i think it enhanced him because he had things not go his right way i mean fair dinkum tuesday morning everyone was everyone was tempted mad everyone was boohoo and kaying rising i mean he's had he hasn't had much go right for him and you know what i don't know i mean he's two trials i mean the experts are saying oh he was flat from the trial and this and that he trialed like that last year and then he came out and did what he did what's kieran's horse's favorite in the uh the cool more the next episode didn't they have a couple of ordinary trials everyone oh hang on a minute yeah mate trial stop looking in the trials everybody race days where it counts and one thing about these great horses is they know when the game when it's game day they know they know the ferry is coming in they know they're getting a shampoo they know if you're sprinting it up race morning these buggers know what's going on and they know when it's race day so they know the difference between a barrier trial and a race day and people put too much emphasis on barrier trials and not enough emphasis on what you do on the day yeah
Speaker 11and just on the other horses i thought jolly star was huge geez headwall ran well ninja ran well i don't know what nash was doing on jimmy star but anyway he ran well too here what did you want him to do what do you what well he could have showed some intent before the corner that would have been good you know just some just anything like you know he's run home the last fastest last furlong of the race uh hawks he highlighted this you know a couple of years ago we've spoken about it consistently you just can't win those races from back there and and i think we were a little disappointed because we were hoping we could run third you know we didn't think we could beat kay in rising or tempted um but you know his sectionals were extraordinary the last furlong got home and run sixth um but i thought ninja was good headwall was good jolly star was good they're all and i'll tell you what there's some great sprinters but i think tempted in australia anyway has got them all covered pretty easily i think the best thing about the race was the form actually
Speaker 12stacked up jolly stars jolly star has won five group ones she's she's won a new market by four lengths i mean you don't win new markets by four i don't care what's in the race you don't win that race like that she's a high class horse has gone to europe come back her first up run she should have won but she was the car young rising she drew a bad barrier and she had no luck and she got beaten she should have won i mean they've worked her out to a tee they know her so well don't run her as much have a mad fresh and she runs her absolute best and tell you what their champion's going to be a race
Speaker 11if she goes there and tempted goes there it sounds like they will go there both will really star
Speaker 2change his plans down go to the if it was me i
Speaker 11would but it'll be up to aussie and karen but if it was me i'd be going to the russell russell boarding you'll be going to the yeah i'll be going to the russell ball so what's the right i'd go there and then it's a no no no
Speaker 12no no no so so so what's the russell boarding it's a million dollar million half dollar bonus for the horses that have run in the everest correct if you win that race it's a million and a half bonus no it's a point
Speaker 11system you have to run in the race yep and it's the three races the is it the challenge the first one okay i think she won that didn't she i think she won that yeah she won that then she won so she's got enough points the problem is that i don't believe that you can earn the bonus if you haven't unless you're running
Speaker 12the three races you can say you can say what you want about money and prize money because sydney outranks melbourne let's be blunt about it but here's a perfect example of people going no no no i want to go to melbourne i want to be their cup week and i want to be involved cup week there is nothing like cup week everest was the biggest day for the next five weeks of city there'll be 17 people at the races it's not the same for the next four weeks in next you know five or six massive race days that we've got everyone wants to be a part of so yeah it proves that it's not all just about the money yes we're seeing she's an alibi going for races in sydney worth 10 million and that but they're they're one offs but here's a perfect example they've tempted and um and jimmy starr go no no let's let's let's go to melbourne to try and win a race cup week up the straight there'd be nothing better than the thrill of the killer and it's from a gym it's not going to change any owner's mind no and you know you know the other thing i want to know is did sheikh muhammad get up at whatever time it was and watch that race because i reckon he must win some group ones in australia and he must have no yeah no no idea until he wakes up wherever he is in the world and goes oh gee i want a great i reckon he would have watched the everest i reckon he would have too with car young rising because that is bragging rights it was to watch that so
Speaker 2they've had so many great days great days godolphin but listening to it was one of the best on saturday i think one of their best because they had a big one double there at asco as well
Speaker 11i'm just looking forward to this last day this sprint now because if joely star and tempted go
Speaker 2there yeah and you get all the glow for the champions bowl i mean that
Speaker 11that last day of the carnival it's going to be unbelievable
Speaker 2it's become the best day of the spring carnival from a quality perspective
Speaker 12well let's put the races on the saturday like like melbourne cup day and oaks day don't have the quality races they've got a few but not the full depth sad day is derby day it'll be amazing it'll be huge but the best but the best horses i've ever seen in my life i've never seen in my life i've never seen in my life i've never seen on champions day run on champions day and to be fair it's aptly named champions day because all the best are going to be there
Speaker 2i've got to take a break michael brow the ceo of mooney valley to join us uh for a special we don't have too many people to come in enjoy the means no one wants to no no one wants to um so after 11 o'clock the ceo of the the mooney valley racing club michael brow will be our special guest but we're going to take a break here and come back with our yes yes yeses in our own nose you join the conversation
Speaker 1Text us on 0499 736 736.
Speaker 3Yes, yes, yes. Yes, yes, yes. Yes, yes, yes.
Speaker 2My yes, yes, yes to kick it all off for the means test. It is one of the great days. I think it's nearly, for me, my favourite days of the spring carnival. The Melbourne Cup is always number one. And then I reckon Everest Day, Caulfield Cup Day, it's number three for me. Champions Day is just in front of it. But it's quickly, like I was in Sydney for the first time. It was my first Everest. What do you think? Oh, wow. What a job they've done. It's incredible. That atmosphere is electric. Everything involved with the race day is, it's such a special day. You can't, like it's packed out. The atmosphere is, I've never really witnessed. It's an atmosphere like that, really. On a racetrack.
Speaker 12Where were you watching the big races? I was everywhere. Members. But you were actually outside. You were in everywhere. Yeah, I was everywhere. You were actually outside though. I was outside, yeah. Okay, so you were in amongst them.
Speaker 2100%. And I was lucky to watch the, I was upstairs to watch the Everest. And just seeing the 50,000 people from the one end to the track to the other was a sight to see. And they were all invested. The roar of Cain rising when he loomed up and then tempted. Just told him. The roar of Cain rising on and the people's reaction after that. It was terrific. And to get 30,000 there at Caulfield Cup Day as well. You can't fit too many more into Caulfield. So it was jam-packed. So I think that's great for racing, to tell you the truth. Like to have racing, to have that many people turn up to these two big events on the same day in two different
Speaker 12cities is terrific. So everyone still talks about it. Someone said to me this morning, Sydney should have their carnival. We should have ours in Melbourne after Sydney's had theirs. No. So if you look at last Saturday, and I'm asking you this question, Gareth. If you look at last Saturday, every 20 minutes, it was nail-biting hair on the back of your neck stuff. I mean, racing just won, won, and won on Saturday. Every 20 minutes, there was something quite amazing happening. As opposed to having one meeting where every 40 minutes there was something happening. Yes, we don't have all the jockeys together. I get all that. But gee whiz. The two days. You know what? The two race meetings didn't compete against each other. I mean. I think they actually complimented each other.
Speaker 2I think the MRC have done a great job by embracing the Everest as well. And Peter Volandi, he's made this point on several occasions. He used to run racing New South Wales, and still he's thinking the top job. I think Graeme Hinton officially takes over at the end of November or December. Were you in his suite on Saturday? No, I wasn't. You didn't get an invite? No, no. No, but he needed. How's he listen, Uncle Peter? Yeah, yeah. Well, but they needed to make an impact in the spring because they were getting. belted by Melbourne and they've done that with the Everest well into my, um, My mate, Dean Watling on Giddy Up, he tip-tempted to beat Koeing Rising. He was brave enough to do that. And Wayne, of course, you're my yes, yes, yes. Unbelievable, you were, with your prediction there in the Everest.
Speaker 11Lee, we want those Tetzelotto numbers, mate. We need them for Saturday. My yes, yes, yes, I saw the Oaks winner. Saw one of the most extraordinary Oaks trials I've ever seen. In all of the years watching racing, couldn't make ground at all, a horse called Your Colour, trained by Chris Waller. So any early betting on the basis that we know it's going there, make sure you tune in. Kelvin and Tony McAvoy, I wanted to give them a huge wrap for the communication around Half Yours. They put a heap of social media out. Correct. Gave everybody the appropriate updates around Half Yours because there's a lot of people clearly concerned about the previous Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup champs. So well done to you guys for communicating openly to the racing public. Kieran, again, what an extraordinary day. Wins the Thousand Guineas, wins the Everest, runs second in the Cup. Just keeps delivering. Congratulations to Blakey Shin, I would have thought. Coming back from injury, win the Thousand Guineas and win that Group 1 that he's been chasing down. And I thought Chad Schofield's ride and well done to him. I spoke to his old man yesterday, actually. Glenn is up and about trying to book him for horses and stuff. So well done, Chaddy. Terrific win and great recognition. Great recognition for someone who works really hard in Sydney.
Speaker 12Great. Why are you on that? Great ride, Chad, because when you are riding a horse of that calibre, we were only saying this a week or two ago, very easy to take off before acceptances, very easy to get an itchy backside and want to go or stay too long. And he just rode that horse to absolute centimetre perfect. And if he had a stuffed up half an inch, she gets beat. Have you got yes, yes, yes's, Wayne? I do, I do. The Caulfield track renovation. It's happening today. It's happening. Thank God. Oh, my. We have, we have, we have. Can't believe Johnny hasn't mentioned the Caulfield track yet. We've wrapped and we've potted Caulfield for years and years and years. And I'm so, I'm genuinely so glad that the track's going under the knife today. So what, what they've done quickly is they've, they, they've cut the grass right back to almost zero. They're going to go and take five centimetres off the whole track. Then they're going to give it a bit of a tickle up underneath. Then they're going to lay the track out. This is going to take four weeks. And then for the next 10 weeks after that, they're going to water the crap out. And so we're back in time for the autumn carnival. So Caulfield has been, you know, Caulfield's been a terrible track. Let's be totally honest. And I'm not bagging Sam Bennett, the curator here, or anyone involved. I mean, this track is old, it's tired, and they're doing the renovation on it that it actually thoroughly deserves. Yeah. And that we actually need for, need for racing. Because I've said it week and week and week and week and week in and out that, you know what, we're just not doing enough about these tracks, especially in New South Wales, let alone if you're going to narrow mine and places like that. But at least they are doing something about it. And you know what, Flemington's ready to go on the knife and Cox Plate, Moonee Valley actually is.
Speaker 2Yeah. Any yes, yes, yeses? Any more yes, yes, yeses for you, Wayne?
Speaker 12Thank you for, thank you for saying what you said about me. You didn't, and I'm being genuinely humble about this. You didn't need to say it. I just call it for what it is. I call it for how it is. And I mean, you know what, it's not, you don't always get it right. Thank you, Wayne, for doing that.
Speaker 11Thank you for doing that.
Speaker 12I actually try and take all the bullshit out of it. And I genuinely mean that. I try and take all the BS out of it so that I just call it how it is. And you know what, sometimes you're not always right. And you know what, you do get it right from time to time, but probably one of our biggest things in our industry that we don't do enough of, we don't do enough telling of the truth. We love smokes and mirrors and truths like poetry. Very few people like poetry and very few people like the truth, but I just try and call it for how it is. And I thought Caghing Rising's getting beaten on Saturday lost no admirers, and I actually love the horse even more for getting beat, as silly as that sounds. I thought it was fantastic.
Speaker 2Well done, Wayne. We're going to take a break. You've been in fine form. It's 10.48 as Josh has just texted in. Wayne Hawke's best ever performance today. Insightful. Learned heaps off him today. And accurate on Caghing Rising. We're going to take a break and come back with our own notes.
Speaker 1736, live across Australia, this is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall. Sit down, Johnny.
Speaker 2Oh, no. See Johnny watching the replay of Jimmy Starr. Be careful, Johnny. We can see you've got no hair now with that camera angle. He's just having a look at.
Speaker 12He's just showing me the replay of Jimmy Starr. Yeah. And he ran good. Yeah. He ran good.
Speaker 2He ran good. Was he. Mickey Gatton said that Jimmy Starr was disappointing.
Speaker 11No. Mickey Gatton.
Speaker 2You've got to talk to the microphone.
Speaker 11Take a tablet, Mickey Gatton, please.
Speaker 2My own nose, Johnny O'Neill. What do you mean? No, no, no, no. For Johnny O'Neill. Point of law, barrier 18. Yeah, not good.
Speaker 11That's no good. That's no good. When's that? Geelong cap. What else? Wednesday. Can you give us the other updates in Geelong? What else? Barrier 18.
Speaker 2Geelong, Vauban barrier 12. The Euphrates barrier 8. Wooden Verde barrier 5. Barclay Square barrier 6. One smooth operator 7. Now, Solcombe 2. Torrezino 16. Point of law 18. Valiant King 3. Small Fry 13. Littl Steel 1. Manza Blue 17. Omni Man 15. Jenny Famous 14. Harry Currie 9. Asford 10. Vegas Jack 11. Sapphire Siren barrier 4. I reckon point of law.
Speaker 11Will you run from 18? Don't know. I'm going to have to ring Kieran.
Speaker 12It's a good race. Good race. Great Geelong cap. And you know what? It's just a great fit, that race, isn't it?
Speaker 2A few of them will go to the Moonee Valley Cup. And if you win the Geelong Cup, you're in the Melbourne Cup. You're all I know, Wayne. Your hat. Do they make them for men?
Speaker 12Do they? Yeah. Is that corduroy or what is it? You can buy them.
Speaker 2You're buying them? $35 on merch, SEM.
Speaker 11Yeah, they do, actually. I like them. They obviously sold out of the men's ones. Now, I didn't design it. They didn't offer me one.
Speaker 12What a bugger. Sold out of the men's ones. Try it on, Wayne.
Speaker 2What is this? Your big mouth. I won't fit your head.
Speaker 11Yes, it will. His head shrunk, mate. Look at that.
Speaker 2Look at that. Now, that's what I'm talking about. Uncle Wayne. Alfred E. Newman. Have you got any onos? Yeah, I do. Yeah? I do.
Speaker 12Keep going. We've got about a minute and a bit. Zach Burton, militarize. I don't know what the instructions were, but why would you want to be taken off 700 from home? Because I'll tell you why. He got beaten under half a length, and there was third, fourth, and fifth. There was half a length between third, fourth, and fifth. There was an extra $300,000 in prize money. $300,000 in prize money. Should have run third. It's 300 grand difference in what he earned to what he could have got. He got 140, I think, and should have got 340 grand. As I said, I don't know what the instructions were, and sometimes we can be too critical of jockeys when you don't know what the instructions were, but I don't think taken off 700 from home. What are you trying to do? Out sprint Autumn Glow? If you sit there, you're not going to beat her anyway, but you've still got to be riding together. Give your best chance in the race, and for the prize money in those races to be running the second, third, fourth, and fifth is life-changing for some of the owners. Henry Field, that's life-changing, 300. Well, you know what? I said for some. Some, yes. I didn't say for all, but I just thought, no one ever comments on those sort of things, but I reckon, you know what? Don't sit there and say how great, great, great everything is when that was pretty average.
Speaker 2I'm going to take a break. We'll get Johnny O'Neill's own nose next. See you next here on Giddy Up.
Speaker 11Johnny O'Neill, your own nose. I've got two quick ones. Those riders taken off too early in the Caulfield Cup was ridiculous. Yep. Just completely destroyed the race. Doesn't that happen in most races today? And, well, yeah, but geez. It's a Caulfield Cup, mate. I don't know. Yeah. And anyway, I don't know if anybody was at, well, the people that were at Caulfield, how many did they have? 30-odd thousand. It was crazy. Just over 30,000. Magnificent. Beautiful day. Weather turned it on again. Melbourne Racing Club. Stewie K, a very good friend of mine who was a racing enthusiast, big owner, he said he wants to give an oh-no to the band leader. The bloke was wobbling all over the joint down the straight with that sporting band that were carrying on like open lunatics. Did you see him? No, I wasn't there. Oh, it was something to see. It was something to see. So we don't know who he is, but the band leader was wobbling. Well, he was there wobbling and dancing and doing the spins. And I don't think he was a real, I don't know what he was, but anyway. So there's an oh-no from Stewie K. Good on you, Stewie.
Speaker 2There you go. Time for a quick break. On the other side of it, we've got Michael Brow, the CEO of the Moonee Valley Race Club. He'll be joining us. There's plenty to discuss, Wayne, and you're ready to go? I'm good. Yep. You said it's going to be a Michael Parkinson-like performance from you today.
Speaker 12No, I don't think so. I'm not saying about that. Yeah. We've got Michael Brow, not Michael Parkinson.
Speaker 11There is a good oh-no on here, and we've given Saintly Dancer, the winner of the Thousand Guineas, no recognition whatsoever. No. So that's an oh-no from Warren from Killsop. So we need to give, well, we need to give. It was a very good win.
Speaker 12Could we not say about Apocalyptic and all these horses that won on Saturday as well? So there you go, Warren. What's amazing about that horse was they said it weighs 435 kilos. Yeah. That is so small for a horse.
Speaker 2Time for a break. Michael Brow to join us next. Thank you. join the conversation text us on 0 4 double 9 7 3 6 7 3 6 live across australia this is giddy up with gareth hall welcome back to giddy up we're going to get through most of not all of your messages but the boys out the back will pick out the best few because i've got to give a couple of tickets away to the geelong cup meeting in the oz equipment rentals ultima hotel se and track marquee
Speaker 11you can uh you're gonna have my two members passes if you want yes
Speaker 2yes you two are going to get a bit uh close together now look at that stick together come on come on let's stick together why are you so much taller i didn't
Speaker 11know you know why could
Speaker 2you sit in his wallet what a beautiful couple you are um our special guest we're going to get serious now our special guest is the ceo of the mooney valley racing club in michael brow something a little bit different for michael and his team this year because the cox plate will be run and won at flemington michael hello to you good morning gentlemen
Speaker 11i didn't realize karaoke yeah yes seriously before we start here yes what about xavier's goal yesterday amazing he's kicked goal of the year michael's michael's xavier brow yeah so xavier brow all of we need melbourne victory to be all over him by the looks of things pointing where the ball needed to go south melbourne was extraordinary it was pretty happy with extraordinary goal i would have thought his dad was pretty happy too yeah he's
Speaker 14bragging right he doesn't get the ability from his dad we're trying to
Speaker 11get michael on 15 minutes ago but he's been showing everybody in the foyer and everyone coming in this goals over here so be assured you got a proud dad are we um barcelona real madrid um
Speaker 14uh he was man city until all that blew up just recently okay there you go yeah i'm happy to take a brown paper bag yeah yes yes
Speaker 2hawks he's good at those aren't you
Speaker 14yeah well that way you did your best work
Speaker 2those are those bags how are you feeling heading towards flemington for your cox plate
Speaker 14relaxed it's a very different build-up yeah this year the flemington team yeah all credit to kylie rogers and her executive they're pulling the operational side of it together the final field will come together over the next 24 hours acceptance is closing at 12 o'clock tomorrow and shaping up i think to be one of the great races of the spring carnival so what input do you have with the race day well we've set pricing in conjunction with the vrc we're doing a lot of the sales we're obviously doing all of the marketing and our team led by ben spall's doing a lot of work to pull together the right fields for the the races yeah so how many people you're
Speaker 2expecting there at flemington
Speaker 14i think a genuine crowd in the mid 30s would be the target we don't i would think that would be disappointing yeah we'll do we need the flemington members to to take up their ticket offers this this week so we're going to be doing a lot of work on that week that's been a little
Speaker 12bit slow so what happens there michael with the uh being i'm a flemington member so what what as a member what what what do i get it's more to to manage the
Speaker 14expectations on the crowd the flemington members just need to register right to get a free ticket that's all they need to do so the the medallion or the digital ticket of flemington members got they need to get a ticket tech ticket to right and swipe that through the day so any so any vrc
Speaker 12member can go can go to mooney can go to flemington but it's a mooney value charge correct and be in the members and have the same right so
Speaker 14the take up there's been a little bit slower at this stage but yeah it's a genuine crowd of 35 000 i think all the hospitality now is sold out we don't get access to anything under canvas so the bird cage the nursery car park all of that's being held over for the four days of flemington which is fine um but no it'll be a it'll be a unique a unique running this year so just quickly
Speaker 11on this flemington membership scenario how do they get on and do that michael is there is there a website we get on to to register
Speaker 14or do we just the the vrc will be sending out an email to all the members to to do that this week so they did they did last week yeah do it before you turn up at the races on saturday and what is their capacity then we could comfortably hold 45 to 50 000 people so the the it'll be a comfortable crowd if it's mid-30s yeah the weather forecast we would have liked a little bit better you know on a monday looking forward to saturday liamo keith i'm sure doesn't want that you know up to 15 mil but if we get 35 000 people there i think that's a good result what do you think would have been
Speaker 2the crowd for cox plate day at flemington wayne well if it
Speaker 12was a it was a money valley you'd be you'd be getting 25 000 the way that the track's configured now it was 22 there you go the last
Speaker 14few years so it's up it's up 50 on where it's been
Speaker 12where where where it gets where it gets hard gareth is the week after week after week it's just it's just it's as simple as that you know what i mean so but if you're looking at a pure race day why wouldn't you want to go and see the inaugural race day at flemington 2000 meters at flemington yeah there's nothing better now it's not the same as being at the valley it's as it's as simple as that because the valley is unique it's like in a happy valley in uh in hong kong but to have the first running of the cox plate she's almost getting goosebumps that's ridiculous so you know what i mean and and we spoke we spoke before about the quality of the field yes there's not the absolute standout but i don't think that's a bad thing i think sometimes when you've got autumn glow when you've got carrying rising in the race that can take it take things away a bit i think from a spectacle point of view autumn glow's race was only fair to watch it i mean it was a small field of five horses there was only two that had any chance yeah and the best was one the second was ran his guts out and the other three shouldn't have been there it's as simple as that so i think from an ownership
Speaker 11perspective we were saying earlier the cox plate this year talking to mike johnny it excites me more than normal because there's so many chances there's seven or eight live hopes in the race um i think you'll be surprised i reckon you'll get north of 35 000 i think the momentum is huge we come off a great caulfield cup carnival uh where they did a terrific job and then we'll go in we'll have a wonderful cox plate day and then i think the momentum around racing at the moment in this in this market is so positive i'm sure there's a stack of entertainment on as they normally would be
Speaker 14so it'll be a fantastic day just one point that the wayne made then i'll just clarify as well the cox plate will be run over two thousand and forty meters yeah so if i was it when we didn't have given us oh is it the 40 meter extension wow oh there you go well it's interesting under the way for age scale um you know before the the first of november anything beyond 2 000 meters the three-year-olds get in at 49 and a half or 47 and a half so potentially got the the two the two horses coming out of the guineas war woven and blind ray so to put those two colts in at 49 and a half it adds a different dimension to the cox plate this year okay are you concerned about
Speaker 11cosmic now it's 2040 knowing that you think it's only a two thousand
Speaker 12meter horse i think i think i think i think he'd be right every year if he runs and you know what let's let let's hope for the cox plate that he actually does run because we know what his records like 2000 meters at flemington is uh is fantastic but i tell you one thing we didn't speak about earlier gareth and i'm going to bang on about it until the day i die stop giving these mares concessions when you've got um you know she's getting a one or two kilo concession running against the boys autumn glow yeah it's a it's a it's a wait for a sorry yeah it's it's as simple as that stop giving these mares concessions because these mares are belting the boys like there's no tomorrow and we they still keep getting in with the uh with a better weight now we did this with the three-year-olds 25 30 years ago john hawks was winning with all the three-year-olds including a cox plate with octagonal and um he ran all of the three-year-olds in those wait for age races and was was beating them all he was beating serious horses then they raised the weights in for the three-year-olds these mares need to be looked at seriously yeah let's get past that and
Speaker 11then we'll tackle that yeah it sets up beautifully after saturday for next year for you though doesn't it yeah it does yes it does back home you'll have she's alibi you'll have autumn glow
Speaker 2will they will you get back home michael that's the big question everyone's still like it's one of those situations with the redevelopment here at mooney valley um you've been on the record on several occasions saying that we will have the cox plate back at mooney valley in 2027 but it's like wayne trying to um talk about alyana going to a caulfield cup when she was never going to a caulfield cup um so yes that was my opinion yeah that's your opinion but people don't think you'll get back there you can guarantee everyone that you will have the cox plate at mooney valley in 2027. yeah we've had people
Speaker 14doubting us doubting our ability to pull off this redevelopment since the idea was first first hatched in 2009 yeah the proof's in the pudding we said we'd close down for a period of time we said we'd build a new race course you were out there two weeks ago i think i'd be keen to get your impressions on it and i was down at the work site this morning there's a hundred blokes working there today um you know the turf's set to go down in less than four weeks time is that on track it looks is that on track it is yeah it is on track okay yeah so the turf's been growing now for more than 18 months down at packing them yep they'll harvest that i think the first the first turf will be laid on the 12th of november it'll take them three to four weeks to do the whole track simil have been unbelievable contractors to come in and do all the work i think originally we thought they'd have it completed in april they're now suggesting they'll be off the site on the the 17th of december so it's been an incredible three months to get the work done and it just looks brilliant to to stand on the balcony of legends there and you can see on the western side the apartment towers yeah we'll have a apartment towers that are 100 meters high on that western side you've got the brilliant city backdrop the the skyline of melbourne effectively on our back fence and then on the left-hand side at the east there we've got brunswick hill so the atmosphere the amphitheater we're certainly really recreating that and we look forward to cutting the ribbon on grand final leave next year i think
Speaker 2everybody's excited i went there a couple of weeks ago i couldn't believe how quickly it's come up and obviously you can't really have an opinion on it whether it's going to work or not until you actually see it and you have that first race meeting but it looks like you're ahead of schedule um well it's going to work did you wear demi's hat when you went to
Speaker 12no i didn't actually it's it's going to work it's just it's just a matter of of how well well whether you like it or not compared to the old booney valley but in saying that i mean if you go and look at the our last renovation or construction in victoria was the uh the inner track at caulfield now that's now that has raced way better i mean it was nicknamed the bike track before it started and it has raced way way better than what we uh than what we actually thought so we have got smarter and better and cleverer with these uh with these track constructions there's no doubt about that but the thing the thing is though is the track is one thing though michael i mean we we we said this on on uh on on this show uh six months ago you can go you can go across the road into the um where'd you take because you've had
Speaker 2have you had your doubts over the mooney valley track wayne whether to be ready to go no oh well no not about
Speaker 12the track itself yeah but the track is just about the
Speaker 11facilities the track is only the track is only one part
Speaker 12of it because the tunnels are obviously built but you've got to build grandstands you've got to have all the construction done and as we said with the grand prix you're on a flat surface you can get harry the hirer to come in and put up all your tents and you can pay a fortune to sit on metal metal seats now you can't put construction up and then halfway through then have your harry the hirer come in and put your tents over the top so do you think that within 12 because it's 12 months now to the end of the day so you reckon in 11 months time we're going to have a grandstand built no i never said that
Speaker 14i know no no
Speaker 12no but that's why i'm asking
Speaker 14no we haven't so we've said that we're delaying the the construction of the grandstand we'll come back to whether it's formula one bird cage australian open style temporary infrastructure it'll be a different race day experience for two our schedule would be come back 2027 cox plate 28 and then immediately after the 29 cox plate start building a spectacular grandstand facility we showed some renders at that media lunch we did a couple of weeks ago so there will be a period as we graduate back so we'll have 12 to 14 race meetings in year one we'll come back then 17 or 18 meetings in year two and then we'll build that grandstand and the turf will be fully set there and we'll have a grandstand there and it may be that so why are we waiting we're paying for it so that the club's paying 250 million dollars out of our pocket to build this build a grandstand it's going to cost 250 that's the whole company the whole company the whole complex is 250 million so so we're going to
Speaker 12so we're going to have portable we're going to have portable facilities for two years at muni valley yes okay yeah i
Speaker 11tell you what i find interesting is the quality of those portable facilities that get put up around the grand prix and a number of events that are the most successful the golf all of these things incredible right unbelievable i'm not quite sure about um attendance and how many numbers you can get in but it would be an interesting thing to ask you we invest so much money in these massive grandstands millions and millions and millions tens of millions hundreds of millions of dollars and in those instances when we look at that from a flemington perspective from a muni valley perspective they're probably full half a dozen times a year yeah right so the question is do you need it do we well we'll do you need them number one do you go more for the this type of style where you concentrate on building a terrific grandstand but don't don't put the expense into everything else and use the pop-up facilities as you
Speaker 14need them yeah and that's that's the model that we'll come back to so the grandstand will accommodate six or seven thousand people in that building when it's done but a major event like a cox plate is supported by the temporary infrastructure bill we had 38 000 people there to see winx winner fourth cox plate in 2018 there was 7 000 people in the grandstand you open up infields you open up the lawns it's a it's a very different experience now a night race meeting's four hours in duration now it's not ideal we'd love to be coming back and cutting the ribbon on the complete end product but because we're paying for this ourselves we're not getting one dollar from the racing industry we had a five million dollar grant come through the government but 245 the 250 million dollars is coming from the club we're not going to bankrupt the club to have a grandstand two years earlier we're cutting our cloth accordingly there's an apartment building that we're set to commence that's almost half a billion dollars in revenue we're the majority shareholder in the residential development across mooney valley park and that's what's funding the redevelopment of the race course so can't you borrow money though unbelievable we we have and we are we've got the debt facility in place no no what
Speaker 12i'm saying is couldn't you couldn't you with the grandstand just do it now then pay it back over the next couple of years no so we're
Speaker 14managing the cash flows through the program with the mooney valley park development this is a this is a once in a hundred year project you know we've been racing on that site since 1883 we don't want to be paying interest on interest on interest um and then have no nest egg at the end of this i
Speaker 11think your program's unbelievable i think the pop-up facility is going to be incredible it provides a different opportunity a brand new experience the most important thing is you're seriously great nick it's 100 so many of these functions really i'll tell you i mean you'll go to flemington we love it don't get me wrong but it's it's a magnificent facility but the amount of money that they put into that grandstand and you would know better than i would know and the majority of listeners because you're there saddling horses on a wednesday and a satellite in the middle of winter with 84 people at the races and you sit back and what they have to then do is look for other ways to drive non-traditional revenue to fund it i reckon this is the best idea ever yeah like we go to the gold you go to the grand prix you go they're unbelievable you go to
Speaker 14a marquee at at the formula one there on the pit straight yeah you're not going to have a better day yeah the the beauty on that is you can theme it up and you can change the look and feel but you know we're confident that we can have more than 20 000 people there at the 2027 cox plate using this footprint we've got this massive new home straight like the last cox plate on the old track we had a front lawn that was about 100 meters long and then we had these big apartment towers coming up the end here we've got a home straight now that will be 317 meters long and wider track
Speaker 12so you're going to get bigger field sizes we've
Speaker 14got a 27 meter wide track we've got a home straight that goes out from 173 meters to 317 trust me wayne trust me i'll get you there on opening night it will be
Speaker 2spectacular um so you say you fund this all yourself so yeah or um obviously five million dollars from the the racing fund but this is a like it's a massive punt really at the end of the day yeah
Speaker 14it is we we came up with this idea in 2009 because we had a we were cash poor asset rich with the land so we've got freehold land we had net member assets when the rezoning went through in 2015 our members had equity of 84 million dollars in the club today we're over 400 and we're 20 done we're the second richest sporting club in the country i hope
Speaker 11you're on a big bonus my friend
Speaker 12but he's done
Speaker 14a good job and in fairness isn't
Speaker 12that the same as anthony thompson he's seventh generation whedon and if he sold his property be worth a trillion dollars but they're not going to
Speaker 14sell it are they so the values come from the redevelopment yeah yeah the residential development is what's increased the value of the land yeah you have a look at the financial strength of our club as i said today we're the second richest sporting club in the country the one we've got to chase the down is the melbourne racing club we put a gap on flemington on the vrc you have a look here in victoria the three metro clubs are the strongest in the country yeah we've got net assets across the three metro clubs of 1.2 billion dollars every other metro club on mainland australia 550 million combined so if call for if call for
Speaker 12losing six to eight million dollars a year just to run races and that's that's a fact we know that how much are you losing a year just on running race means because these are the things that people are losing they're losing a lot of money they're losing a lot of money they're losing a lot of money they're losing a lot of money they're losing a lot of money don't know and i don't think it's that big a secret because that is a fact it's about eight million dollars give or take what the melbourne racing club lose just to put race meetings on for the whole year yeah there's
Speaker 14different ways that you can look at it so at an ebitda level so before depreciation amortization and interest this year mooney valley will post a result north of 20 million dollars the three metro clubs this year will post at the ebitda level a result north of 75 million dollars which i think is a lot of money i think it's a lot of money i think it's a lot of money i think it's an incredible effort incredible now we've got different business models the melbourne racing club yeah they were trailblazers under mike simons and brodie arnold you know 10 or 15 years ago with the the pokies business
Speaker 11hotels and stuff yeah they
Speaker 14redeveloped the the car parks there for the apartment product
Speaker 12you know but jim charmer's no disrespect you didn't ask my question though eight million bucks is what it costs to run the melbourne racing club and just the racing only i understand i understand race meetings three tracks yeah no doubt they have they got more than three they got five oh well you got mornington you got two at sandown and two of course at caulfield but my point is if they're losing eight million bucks a year to run races only i understand their pokies and everything are making up for it what is mooney what what is that the equivalent with mooney valley you've got to be losing money no because we all do every every every racetrack loses
Speaker 14money we we cut our cloth accordingly we've managed our finances unbelievably tight over you know this is my 19th year at the club we've got we finished the financial year the three metro clubs combined had debt on their balance sheets of 260 million dollars the three metro clubs the melbourne racing club of that 260 198 flemington 52 mooney valley less than 10 so we haven't put ourselves in debt and that's that's with us funding the first 70 million dollars worth of work that you can see out at the valley today we've only started drawing debt facilities in august this year so we're in the financial strength across mooney valley what we've done in the past 15 years as i said we're we're at 400 today it's going north so
Speaker 12where are your members as far as have i mean some members must have dropped off because the club's not there and that would be to be expected it's not a smart so the members that signed up to be
Speaker 14there for the final running of the cox played they paid one year and they're getting two yeah so we haven't gone back to the members to get them to pay again this year so that'll carry through and and we don't want to have to charge our members and that's why i was asking the question when they come back we want it to be we want it to be we want it to be one of the best value tickets in racing so actually what just
Speaker 11for one when you were talking about um the melbourne racing club losing eight million dollars putting races on the key in any of these businesses as you would say michael is understanding diversifying you got to right and no doubt and so even though the melbourne racing club will be saying that they probably forecast that was going to be a challenge for so they needed to i think i think i think i think they
Speaker 12budgeted for 10 and then he lost eight last financial year so i i totally get that but what the the the average person that joe blow listening right now doesn't understand is that midweek at sand down is costing a fortune to put on the industry is not making money out of that if we didn't have cox plate and corfield cup day they're the days that make the money flemington would not be flemington without uh without their couple i'm going to
Speaker 2take a break on the other side of it we'll continue on our chat with the ceo of the mooney valley racing club um in michael brow
Speaker 1join the conversation text us on live across australia this is giddy up with gareth hall welcome back to giddy
Speaker 2up it's a special means test the ceo of the mooney valley racing club michael brow joining us on cox plate week as we get set for the cox plate to be run at flemington for the first time um there were some interesting numbers there michael and we'll get to a few of the questions you can see the text line um but um some um interesting numbers regarding how much your club is expecting to make obviously with um the the reconstruction there of mooney valley so um and the sale of the units and the sale of the units do you think your club um do you think the clubs need to merge why no i'm just asking you yeah what's the
Speaker 14benefit you've got three metro clubs in melbourne we've all got our separate identities yeah you've got a separate membership base sponsors you know there's a little bit of crossover that the sponsorship's an important piece as well what's the deals with advertising and yeah what's the benefit of the three clubs yeah
Speaker 2other than the numbers you were talking about before regarding the clubs and how you think that they're financially they're set up and obviously mrc and um mooney valley are in a good spot um and flemington made a profit this year but there's there's many participants that i talked to i think racing victoria for it as well that these clubs need to come together yeah i've had a robust
Speaker 14discussion with aaron morrison he he came out and suggested that there's a 50 million dollar dividend there for the three clubs if we were to do that i think it's going to be a big deal it's going to emerge i don't believe that at all like we're running why would they make that number
Speaker 2up then it's it's a
Speaker 14fairly basic assumption that they've worked off so um you know they've added up the expenditure across the three clubs and said just shave 10 off and there's 45 million dollars if only life was that easy you know if only life was that easy um you know we run an incredibly efficient business model at mooney valley there's no largesse at all we're not you know we're not living beyond our means we've had this major redevelopment project in the pipeline for 15 years we need to see it through the club will come out of this incredibly strong you know the melbourne racing club they're doing a brilliant job running their businesses the vrc it's great that since kylie rogers has gone in coming out of covid with neil wilson their return to profitability as i said on the balance sheet for these three metro clubs there's net assets of 1.2 billion that'll be two billion dollars in the near future you know we should be incredibly proud of what these three clubs are building the atc they'd be incredibly envious of the strength of the three metro clubs can you sustain
Speaker 2prize money then well
Speaker 14that's racing victoria's role to sustain prize money and last 2025 i haven't seen the 2026 numbers yet but prize money and returns to industry participants so jockey riding fees and the like 320 million now the the return to industry participants is as high it's ever been based on the wagering turnover that racing's generating could racing victoria be more efficient possibly possibly but you know clubs out of 526 million clubs as shareholders in racing victoria our cut on that was less than
Speaker 290 million dollars can racing in this state be more efficient with the clubs than if you put your resources together like yeah yeah for instance as people that back office yeah back office or even like having a ceo like a having their own like um someone looking after like a leah mckeefe looking after all the tracks yeah
Speaker 14it's been tried before like i've been in racing administration for 30 years i've seen shared services come and go i've seen mergers come together you know it's one thing to say sell off epsom yeah that'll be the the future fund for the industry there's not a dollar left of selling off epsom that's long gone um yeah racing victoria under andrew jones encouraged southside racing to merge packingham and crambon have come together they're orphans now they have no no standing in the industry at all yeah they're not sitting under country racing they don't have a seat at the table with industry i don't know how that gets resolved in the near future but it should be now you know there's obviously efficiencies that can be had you know there was a time when country racing went off and bought all the marquees i'm not sure if they're still putting them up at all the country race meetings but if i went back to the office after this interview and i said i'm going to cut my head count in half through finance it marketing payroll and human resources i'd save a million and a half dollars it's a long way off the 50 million that race victoria i agree with you 100 on that and
Speaker 11the other thing that i think is a little bit uh preconceived is that the race clubs all get on really well there's this whole scenario that you know it's one versus the other versus the other i've never seen the three ceos and the three chair chairman chair people workers closely together and collaborate understanding their audiences what they're trying to do for the public and put the show on and i think it's done really well and i think sometimes when we continue to look at how do we save costs let's get procurement in as you say let's get rid of the people that have worked in the back office that make mooney valley what it is for 25 years because they're in a finance area and we'll get somebody but you say
Speaker 2that johnny you say that johnny but how can you have a pra in clubs and be so like um so um way off regarding the numbers when it comes to mergers and have different philosophies well because
Speaker 11because other people in my opinion yeah michael probably has a bit of me because there's better interest for other people other than the people that are running the clubs yeah so fundamentally if the three ceos and the three chairman and the boards and the people that run the clubs represent those businesses can deliver a wonderful experience run their own businesses and work behind the scenes to collaborate where they need to that answers your question i would have thought i mean you know we've always been very um picky on the tracks as you know um and we're a huge fan of of liam but that doesn't mean that the guy that runs the valley and and the guy that runs he's done
Speaker 12a good job so just come from rosehill to
Speaker 11be fair yeah so here's a scenario so it's easy for us to have an opinion and want to consult with the people that are running the clubs and the people that are running the clubs and the people that are running the clubs and the people that are running that stuff too because flemington for us has been the most consistent delivered track fair track for a very very long period of time yeah so you know we align to the argument
Speaker 2they're not the argument the discussion i when i hear different administrators talk is that it is a game where you sort of have to make sure that you're getting everything right and it's difficult to um it's difficult to try and sustain prize money in today's world without um obviously everyone working together closely and when people say about merging the the clubs and if aaron morrison believes he can save 50 million dollars and he can put that back into prize money that's the that's the conversation that you have with the different administrators around around the but aaron doesn't know it's no surprise no he doesn't it'll come as no surprise
Speaker 14to aaron that i've got the view that 50 000 is a fanciful number yeah it just 50 million 50 million is a fanciful number and you're not alone on
Speaker 2that people from the vrc that i've talked to have the same opinion yeah so i've
Speaker 14been at mooney valley this is my 19th year i know every number in that business back to front and if someone can come in and tell me there's a million dollars on the ground that i should be picking up please please do one
Speaker 12one thing as a participant we talk about this over and over and over but we never actually know what we're actually talking about because it's not smokes and mirrors because sometimes you can't actually say you people in the back of your mind it's not the truth but you can't actually come out and say what you want to whether it's whatever, we can't always say. But as a participant, you don't own it. You run it and you are the gatekeeper by day and by night and you'll pass the baton over. So at the end of the day, we don't know enough in the industry about what our industry actually is. And I reckon if you asked the footballers, they'd probably say the same thing probably about the clubs and the AFL, that they don't know exactly what's going on either. So it's a hard thing to understand because, I mean, around the water cooler or at the pub or whatever, how many times do people talk about industry stuff? Sometimes that information has got nothing to do with anybody. We're so far off the mark.
Speaker 2Have you learned anything from Michael's discussion today? Yeah, I have.
Speaker 12But one thing I do want to ask Michael is we were just talking off air about what are you making out of dissecting off the corner of the track? What are you actually making in selling the apartments? What's the ideal number that you want to come out with at the end? Because this is funding everything you're about to do.
Speaker 14It's not a number that I'll disclose on air. There's some commercial sensitivities. We're the majority shareholder in what is a full billion dollar redevelopment of the Moonee Valley Racecourse. So across the journey, you need to trust me, Wayne, that we're across the detail in here. We've taken measured steps all the way through. We've got brilliant partners in Host Plus in Hampton. The quality of the product's incredible. We sold two penthouses not long ago, one for five and a half million, one for four and a half million. And the feedback from those that have moved in onsite is.
Speaker 12Tony Ottobre living in one?
Speaker 14He is. No, I knew that.
Speaker 2I knew that. Tony, appreciate you telling everyone where he lives now.
Speaker 12Gareth, we can't all live in Parkdale at 3195. Gareth, you hate me saying that.
Speaker 11I think the great thing is the funding model that you've put in is going to cover all of your redevelopment. You're going to have some surplus.
Speaker 12That's right. So what's it actually costing to build a grandstand and rip up the track and put a new track down?
Speaker 14$250 million will be the investment from the. The club. So you're getting $250 million. We're getting more than $250 million.
Speaker 12No, no, so you're getting $250 million for that and how much fat you're going to have at the end. Stop it. He's not going to give you the number, Wayne. He's the politician. I feel like I've got elbows sitting next to me. You've got some surplus.
Speaker 14It's good. So, Wayne, I've lived these numbers. No, I'm not saying you haven't,
Speaker 12but as an industry participant, these are things that we don't know. And I understand that you haven't sold them. So it's ethically unfair and contractually you can't say, but as industry participants, because we all know that Corfey wanted to merge with Moonee Valley and Moonee Valley said no and there was talk about that.
Speaker 14But it wasn't a merger. It was a close down.
Speaker 12Well, yeah, it was for you. For Moonee Valley, yeah. They wanted to take it all over and then shut Moonee Valley down and then sell Moonee Valley off. And there's a lot of people that think that is what still should happen. Why? Because they think that $400 million to go back into the industry might be better than actually racing at Moonee Valley 18, 20 times a year. Yeah, but you need to appreciate,
Speaker 14the club model, you look at our constitution, our club rules. There's no mention of Racing Victoria. There's no mention of the Melbourne Racing Club. There's no mention of the VRC. We're an independent racing club, a member based organization. Now the members don't get the windfall if Moonee Valley ever sold off. If we had, we had two choices. We could have got to 2025, we could have run the last race meeting and we could have sold off the whole site, taken the future profits that we get in from our share of Moonee Valley Park, plus land value. So for the purposes of the exercise, let's say we end up with a billion dollars. There's nothing in our constitution that says that money has to be gifted to Racing Victoria. Where would that money go? Well, I collect like, so the members get it. We don't, we don't need to worry about that because we're building a new race. Because they're not doing it. No, but what I mean, yeah, but the Melbourne Racing Club doesn't need our cash.
Speaker 2But you, you, you, you, you exist because of racing basically.
Speaker 14Yeah. Yeah. We should be congratulated. We should be congratulated to, to be going. It's the boldest ambition that you could imagine to come through and build a metropolitan racing track, six kilometers from the center of Melbourne. Yeah. You talk about, you talk about location, location, location. Yeah. Industry participants aren't getting clipped a hundred million dollars this year for the industry to fund the redevelopment of Moonee Valley. Prize money hasn't been impacted. Turnovers down a little bit because of the transferred meeting model, but the industry will, when it's done, they'll turn it up and they'll see the spectacular vision that we've got. You might even get a pat on the back and say, well done. You pulled it off. Now I've got, I've got, I'm, I'm
Speaker 2definitely running out of time here. Can I get a pat on the back when it's all done, Wayne?
Speaker 14And say, well done. You pulled it off. I'm not, I'm not, Michael, I'm not against you.
Speaker 12I'm just saying what people are saying because I'm here with the microphone. I'm not for or against.
Speaker 14There's no one that knows the project better than me, Wayne. And trust me, I'm not against you.
Speaker 11You've got great loyal people around you too, which is terrific, which is terrific to see. And Adam Lennon, we love him.
Speaker 2I've got a couple. A couple of questions. Um, the Cox play, will it ever go up in prize money? So you, it went up to six. Do we need it to be go up there? Did you try and get she's alibi here? We did. Yeah. And they said no.
Speaker 14Yeah. Peter, Peter elected to drop her out at the second acceptance stage. So there was no distraction on, I had conversations with Peter after she ran at Flemington, um, to see if there was any chance that he'd change his mind. He steadfast that the golden Eagle is the plan.
Speaker 2And could you put on a bonus for him that he could. Couldn't say no. Or is that dangerous? We've had bonuses in the past.
Speaker 14Yeah. Yeah. I, I think you need to keep the integrity of the race. Yeah. There's a horse that may be paying a $200,000 late nomination by 12 o'clock today to run in the Cox. Land legend. Well, that's yeah, he will. Yep. He will. Yeah. So yeah, w we, we can't say to Kieran might post 50 grand and you're in we've advertised it's 200. He's got to pay 200,000 by 12 noon today. So yeah, the committee has discretion on how the final fields composed. I don't think we have. The discretion to go and offer one horse, more prize money than the other that, that doesn't sit.
Speaker 2Well, yeah. Hey, when you've, you weren't asking that question that you always say that the Caulfield cup should change with the Cox play.
Speaker 12So is there ever, it happens every year, but moving Cox plate day and Caulfield cup day, swapping them around. If it was one club, that's what could happen. Cause we saw what happened in Sydney with moving Canterbury guineas and making it around with guineas and things like that. It probably doesn't matter to you.
Speaker 14If I could change one. Yep. One thing. In the spring carnival calendar at the moment, I'd put the King Charles. A week earlier to have a two week break into the Cox plate. Yeah. Yeah. Touch wood, touch wood. Joe pride's going to bring cheer. Wolf days. He's coming. Um, you know, he was 30%. He's 50%. They were bullish after, but if he's coming, that's fantastic. You know, I'd love to see a sequence in the program where the star horses, whether it's 1200, 16, 2000 meters can progress through the ranks. And yeah, you don't want a Cox plate to be an afterthought. You know, we, in 2023, we had 58 four-year-olds nominate this year. We had 16. Yeah. That's the impact of the golden.
Speaker 11I agree with you. I agree. I think it's a really good idea.
Speaker 2Yeah. And it's going to be difficult to compete with that now with the golden Eagle.
Speaker 14Yeah. But the, I think 2018, the Cox plate went from three to five. Yeah. We've had different bonuses in the past year for the first time we ran out of the six, the extra million, 100%. Of the extra million went to the winner, $4 million. So we think we're pretty well, you know, you know, it's enough because the only
Speaker 12ones you're going to attract to some of the overseas ones. And do we need them to make the Cox plate, the Cox plate? You do need overseas horses. Well, I don't know about that. I mean, we don't have all the overseas horse this year. Never. We're talking about, yeah, this is a great race. And what was Johnny's? I reckon Michael would like an overseas horse. The Melbourne cup should be worth $30 million. It's a fact because what he generates that race, it's only worth 10. And I say only, it doesn't need to be worth. It doesn't need to be worth any more. Because the other thing is the great horses are ruining telephone numbers in prize money. Now it's the bottom end of the industry that we need to push up.
Speaker 11Seven chances. It's going to be an incredible race day.
Speaker 2It'll be fantastic. Thanks for joining us. We could talk all day, Michael. Thanks for coming in. And we might have to have it. It's taken a while to get me here. Yeah, I know. I appreciate it. I appreciate it. I've been kicking Wayne under the table to look after you too. We've been trying to line the diaries up, haven't we? We appreciate you coming in with the means test because these boys don't like anyone taking the line. We appreciate the limelight from them, but we appreciate you coming in. That's not true.
Speaker 12Garris, do you want a giddy-up hat? Do you want a giddy-up hat? Because I don't.
Speaker 14I don't think I could pull that hat off.
Speaker 7That's another bang. Keep going, son. Keep going. Love it.
Speaker 2Thank you, Michael. Take a break. Thank you, Wayne. Have a great day. Good on you, Johnny. See you later, G. See you, boys.
Speaker 11Hey, G. Wednesday, Aurora Bell. Okay, yes. Something for the battlers. And then go to the Brisbane races midweek. There's a horse called Warigo. Warigo River, trained by Tony Golan. Two for two, gang.
Speaker 12And my tip is get to Flemington to see the Cox Plate on Saturday. It's going to be one hell of a race.
Speaker 2All right. Well done, Wayne. Time for a break. We'll come back with bag of tips.
Speaker 1The Giddy Up Bag of Tips. The Giddy Up Bag of Tips for AusEquipment Rentals. Supplying equipment to the construction, mining, and roadworks industries.
Speaker 2AusEquipment.com. We're going to find you a few winners today. Thanks to AusEquipment Rentals, the Ultima Hotel, and of course, Bet365. Paulie Sebastiani will be giving out a double pass as well to the marquee for Geelong Cup Day. Let's catch up with Nick Noon, who's done the form for us for Echuca today. Hello to you, Nick.
Speaker 15Morning, Gareth. Yeah, we've got a. a meeting from Echuca today. Looks great weather out there. Truck's a good four. And the truth, it does look a very tough punting program, in all honesty, but hopefully we can find one for the listeners.
Speaker 2All right, then where do we start with your place?
Speaker 15I'm going to play in the back two races of the card. I thought the early races were quite tricky. So race seven, number seven, and here comes Wazza. He's a first-up winner out of Chuka over this track since last campaign. He's jumped out well for this. He's a local. He can put himself near the speed. I thought he probably should be the favorite in that race and happy to play him each way. So race seven, number seven. And then race eight, number one, was the other each-way player that I thought in Adudu Glass. Probably brings in the best form, chasing Frosted in time, last start at Kilmore, back to 1,000 metres, I think suits him. I think he can also give you a bit of a show each way today. So two plays later on the card, not super confident, but I thought they were a bit over the odds.
Speaker 2Beautiful, mate. Great stuff over the weekend. What was your highlight?
Speaker 15Oh, geez, it was a big weekend. I think it probably has to be the Everest start, just everything that came with that and the result, the talk after the race, plenty of commentary on social media around that curtain's ride. So, yeah, that's definitely the highlight.
Speaker 2The great game. Good on you, Nick. Thanks, G. There's Nick Noonan there. And we've got a few of the other tips, and Paulie Sebastiani's ready to go to read them out.
Speaker 13Ready to rock and roll with those, G. We'll get the BetBoost horse out as well for the putters. This is a Chuka race for number 11 today with Bet365. Meet the Prince, $3.50 out to $4 for those who play with us at Bet365. So, hopefully, we can start the week on a winning note. Head to thetrots.com.au for expert harness racing tips and in-depth analysis from all major Victorian meetings. Darren Carroll today, he likes two of those at Terang. Race three, number one, swimsuit. That's race three, number one. And then race six, number eight, Keyang, Minnesota. So, at Terang today for DC, 3-1-6-8. Jane Ivel out of New Zealand today. She's going to join us momentarily for the New Zealand wrap, but her selections are going to be Platinum Attack, Asturia, and Waimea Bay. Those are the ones she'll be focusing on today for her selections. And then we head over to Pinjarra, Glenmore. Race three, number one, Morsas at Pinjarra for Silky. Race four, number seven, Band of Rock. And race six, number eight, Sugar Shake. So, 3-1-4-7-6-8. For Glenmore at Pinjarra. And Luke Hovenessian, he likes a few at Musclebrook and Orange today. So, at Musclebrook, race five, number six, Nugget Smart. Race seven, number five, Jason Darren. So, 5-6-7-5 at Musclebrook. And at Orange, he's race five, number six, Oni Speed. And race seven, number 16, Media Coverage. So, 5-6-7-16. Make sure you get on the Betfus Tours as well. And we've got heaps of vouchers to hand out, Garrett. The Ribeiras for the Simply Sensation. Double passes to the Geelong Cup. And we've got a whole heap of double passes for the Ascot Vale lunch as well that we need to hand out to the best text message for the morning too. So, plenty to give away, Garrett.
Speaker 2Beautiful. We'll take a break. Jane Ivel to join us next. Good on you, Paulie Sebastiani.
Speaker 16I've spoken about that before. He might go to Rickerton. There's some opportunities there at a lesser level, over 1,200 and 1,000 metres. And then you've got the railway, of course, Caraca Million Knight Group 1 back at Owlersley, which is probably where we'll see him head.
Speaker 2All right. And it comes around pretty quickly, doesn't it, Jane? These carnivals in New Zealand, obviously, the big races come up in the summer period. So, before you know it, we've had a few group ones already in New Zealand over the last month or so, but then the summer carnival will be in full swing.
Speaker 16Yes, certainly. And obviously, right at this point in time, the focus is sort of on the three-year-olds in New Zealand as they build towards Rickerton. And we've got the 2,000 and 1,000 guineas coming up in a couple of weeks' time. And then Christmas is really where it happens, as you mentioned. Sort of Boxing Day, New Year's Day, and then into that meeting at the end of January for Caraca Million. So, look, I think there's some horses you can follow out of the Owlersley meeting, particularly in this race. Jaffe got back and was pretty unlucky. Where's the Colours of Cambridge stud? She's a Group 1 winning mare, and I think she'll pick up another good racer over the summer. And Perfect Chaos was really good as well out of the Stephen Marsh stable, a three-year-old taking on the older horses. And I thought she found the line really nicely. But talking about sort of leading into. The Guineas, Astoria was very good in the soliloquy on Saturday. Generally a really good guide to the 1,000 guineas. It's the first time we see these three-year-olds sort of get to 1,400 as their next step to a mile. And, look, Astoria has been terrific. It was a very patient ride by Michael McNabb. Settled her in a position where she relaxed. She worked into the race and sprinted really well. And, look, she's had two wins from three starts now. And the only time she's beaten was when she finished runner-up to Old Fashioned in the Hawke's Bay Guineas, and that's pretty good form. Old Fashioned's probably one of the leading contenders for the 2,000 guineas. So that's another race that certainly people can take a little bit out of. Miss Magnetica was an eye-catcher, so was Dash and Dixie. Lagura was the only one that sat up on speed and still finished in the placing. So, yeah, I think a really good guide as we head towards the guineas as well.
Speaker 2Good on you, Jane. We appreciate your time as always. And, yeah, we'll catch up with you later on the week.
Speaker 16No problem. Thank you.
Speaker 2There's Jane Ivel looking back at a big weekend of racing. New Zealand will come back, and we'll wrap up Giddy Up on this Monday. It's been a busy show. A few prizes to give it away, so, Paulie Sebastiani, take it away.
Speaker 13Good morning to you again, Gareth. Yes, it has been a very busy show. The Simply Sensational. The Simply Sensational moment is won by Rothwell Smithy. Well done to you, Rothwell. He said he was at the Doonbin Members Bar on Saturday. He was with a mate who slapped him on the back and said, she's going to beat the champ, obviously referring to tempted there. We both had a thrill, a chill with goosebumps. Loved that amazing feeling watching great races, like we all do, Gareth, like we all do. Yes. So, Rothwell Smithy is the winner of the Ribera's voucher, so congratulations to you. The winner of the Ascot Vale Lunch Double Pass goes to Big Boy Michael. So, on you, Big Boy, he said, my performance of the week goes out to David Hayes. Be humble in victory and defeat. He was first to congratulate Kieran Ma after tempted won the Everest. Also, his availability all week to media was fantastic and showing off his horse, Ka Ying Rising. Ka Ching Rising. So, well done to you, Big Boy Michael. You are the winner there of our double voucher, our double pass to the Ascot Vale Luncheon on Friday, which is a big Cox Plate Lunch.
Speaker 2And I've got a few tickets to give away, too, for that Geelong Cup meeting there on Wednesday.
Speaker 13Yes. Who was your annoyingly good performance of the week, Gareth? Have you got one? I think it has to be Kingswood.
Speaker 2Yeah, I think it's sensational. Or tempted, one of those two. But I'm going to give it to Kingswood Three White without covering. Got the job done. Give it a veggie.
Speaker 13He deserves it. Yep. Well done to the family as well.
Speaker 2Good on you, Paulie. Thanks, mate. Thank you. There's Paul Sebastiani. That wraps up Giddy Up. All thanks to. Bet365 on this Monday morning. We'll do it all again tomorrow morning from 8 o'clock. And, of course, you can listen to us on SEN Track, RSN, and watch us on Racing.com. We'll have the means test on YouTube a little later on, so just subscribe to SEN Track on your YouTube channel. But have a great day. Thanks for your company, as always.
