Speaker 4it in melbourne town leading up to this race yeah well we've certainly had it all our own way without any rainfalls so um good fall this morning all right then what are we expecting there tomorrow afternoon yeah as um as mark alluded to top of 25 um looks like we're going to get a north wind from 15 to 25 to 20 k's i should say sorry uh which is that headwind in the side straight now the 1200 meter shoot so um we've seen when you know those wind velocities from from that direction um good sort of uh muddy up races but uh certainly at 15 20 k's i don't think it has too big of an impact okay will we get an upgrade i would have thought so it's um it's really sort of difficult time of year well while the uh top temperatures um you know the mid to high 20s you know the overnights and mornings are still quite cool so it's very easy to do when it comes from irrigation standpoint so we'll sort of play it conservative and um and i imagine we probably get to a three somewhere in

Speaker 3this is the tag it of course yes the kickoff proceedings prince eric's running today so it will come out i've got no real opinion what will win for that reason i'll give you a couple that i'll have something on at big odds very small bets to kick the day off seven and nine flag flyer and hurricane flag flyer look it's two wins before a spell we're against houdini and bring forth which is quite competitive in a race like this it came back around flemington unsuitable trip straightened up with politely done politely done left and right and then it's a good race but it was still quite a good run i don't know why it hasn't raced since that's a query but at its very best it's not hopeless in a race like this and it's seventy one dollars hurricane number nine it's been trialing well you don't have to go back far and it pretty much finished alongside cavalry in a race at flemington one's well in the market and one's around twenty to one so there's plenty of other chances i don't have a firm opinion if you want to have something small on seven and nine you should get a run for your money with at least one of them

Speaker 3i liked it first up was fifty to one and it should have won or gone very close to winning i thought the wet track might pull it up the other day but it just sailed down the outside and bolted in it's come back in fantastic form it's got a great chance again all right emperor zoo yeah it's going fantastic it's standing up to just a mountain of racing it gets back onto dry ground but it won that maiden at packing them on the dry really well that won't pull it up it'll get a great run just behind the speed it's right in the mix

Speaker 3couple of starts but hasn't fired really i don't like it i don't like the horse and look i'm not going to say i can't win it's chris waller it gets a beautiful run just behind the speed it's getting fitter it hasn't shown anything to say it's going to be strong at 1800 meters it will get a good run
Speaker 2if it won i'd be losing on the race so when we analyze this first race from a map perspective and also a pattern perspective it's going to be a good run if it won i'd be losing on the race what are you looking for that will give you confidence later on in the day well this there's
Speaker 3a horse here called slain who was scratched from the midweeks where it probably would have been outclassed at the midweeks it's decided to run here it's 150 to one yes strong barrier one with the three kilo apprentice it leads over 1200 or 2500 it just hammers forward and leads now it's got the potential to borrow up inside them here and really put on a good tempo so i think you'll see the first run at a genuine tempo which will give you guide to how the track is.

Speaker 3it's the one that sets up beautifully for the race it ran on well on the synthetic on debut it didn't beat much the other day having said that riverly prince is not a useless maiden froggy had them covered he just came out at the 500 straight around them gave it a couple of slaps at the top of the straight and then just jogged to the line to win by nearly five it looks like there's decent pressure in this race i would think he would park about fifth or sixth inside i don't think any of them are world beaters i think it's an oaks and derby preview but don't think any of them are world beaters but it looks like it's a real stayer it'll need to get clear at the right time there'll be some tiring leaders i think icu's a good bet number two frank whisper geez a slow wind down at geelong it just reeled in a couple of average horses and got there you wouldn't be raving about it if you didn't get raving off that one has been back to the trials it's been in two really hot trials it's most recent one at sandown was good so maybe it's just improving as a horse it'll be sitting in the same spot as icu it'll have clearer air it's got a chance they're the two i like number five bohemian boy comes through the best form race that race at sandown it ran okay it's got to prove it can run the distance and nine quick finish went forward led the synthetic went for home a long long way out so the wind wasn't too bad it's another one it's a harder race it's got to prove it can run the distance and nine quick finish went forward led the synthetic and it has to run the trip but i like three i think it's a pretty safe each way play uh three

Speaker 3starts yeah unbelievable anyway what are we doing here mark two to beat 11 winner's edge to beat behavior uh winner's edge had a great little campaign there on wet ground in those good races second to cosmic crusader last time dry tracks no worries got good dry form had a lovely tick over jump out good barrier park fifth or sixth and the way it's going it flies around here at caulfield i think winner's edge is the way to beat 11 behavior it's going great behavior now all its form in recent times has been on wet ground as well which is a theme of the day but you go back to that ruder oil run down the straight on the dry ground i think it'll run terrific so they're the two i like two to beat 11. make a case for one spywire terrific recent trial just draws wide needs some luck three uh bevs nine look it's forms good that most recent trial it's a concern for sure look like it was ridden along and not going far and six peloton having the first start for the new stable three trials it's a great run 1100 meters it's perfect distance

Speaker 3well as long as they've got some history of handling the firm that's fine the ones that you know they make their debut on heavy track or their first few runs are on wet ground and they get onto the dry you've got to go back and have a look through the trials see if there's any dry form see how they trialed if not they're certainly a query but if they've got previous exposure and they've run well they should be fine yeah let's have a look at the thousand guineas pro you

Speaker 2so you were so bullish about her first up at caulfield and she never went a yard never went a yard yeah and so under those circumstances you need to give her
Speaker 3one bad run because it was just too bad to be true wasn't it if she got beat three links you say you got it completely wrong yeah but she got beat whatever 10 or 12 and didn't fire
Speaker 2so something's not not right yeah um this favorite lax gate speed as graham being pointed out there yesterday. Is that a concern that she'll get too far back?
Speaker 3Well, she jumps okay. Jumped okay last time and drifted back from the barrier. The issue here is that Mystical Realm and Rebel Tuesday are drawing one and two. They've both got more speed than her. So Geordie can't afford to end up eighth or ninth on the fence. He's just going to be in a position there where he's completely dictated to. So he's got to make sure somehow that he stays off the rails and gets clear air to work into the race.
Speaker 2What about Portanari, the second favourite for Blake Sheehan and Lindsay Park?
Speaker 3Well, you're hoping with Portanari that dry ground is the key. Otherwise, you'd say it won't run 1,400 metres. That was a query. Like, it ran the Quisette, ran okay, but there's nothing to say it was needing longer. Went to the 13 and was pretty much staggering over the line. It draws wide, needs a lot to go right. You're hoping a dry track helps it. Otherwise, it won't run the trip. Talk me out of Saintly Dancer. Well, it'll go forward, get a good run. They just got way too far back last time. You take the Garners, a car run before that. It'll get a good run for John Allen. It's probably first down to the fence. Whether it's quite good enough would be my only query, but I wouldn't talk you out of it. If you like it, I wouldn't talk you out of it.
Speaker 2But a big plus maybe with the way that that track will play, if it can put it into that spot that they're hoping she can be put into at the start.
Speaker 3I was surprised with the tactics last time going so far back. That just gave it no chance. It made a little burst and it just couldn't get any closer. I think you'll see a much better effort written forward. Whether it's quite good enough is the query.
Speaker 2I think they're all surprised with how far it got back there the other day. Let's have a look at the Caulfield Guineas Prelude. No scratchings to report just yet. And it's a good little betting race here. This race here at Caulfield, which is race number five. We've got the Trent Busset and Natalie Young trained three-year-old Blind Rays, the favorite at 270. Wolf Gap, who was a big second behind Blind Rays there the other days at $3. American Eagle, 420. Toronado Valley at 17. Sarah Fox at 17. And big prices for the rest here, Mark. Is it a race in three?
Speaker 3I've got it down to more race in two with five and three. I think American Eagle is my little query of the three favorites. I'm going to go number five, Wolf Gap, who I thought was fantastic first up. They drew wide and rightly so. First go at 13, bigger fish to fry. They rode it quietly and let it run on. Now, the way the race was run, Blind Rays kicking quick, kicking clear. Wolf Gap had no chance to win, but really flattened out and gave chase. Now, it draws better. Still got a tricky gate. Got a couple inside it looking to settle the same spot. I think Ethan will look to be, he'd love to be fifth outside, tracking the two favorites into the race. I think Wolf Gap's got a great hope. Three Blind Rays went into that first up run off only one jump out. Given a great ride, got clear. Wolf Gap did peel ground off it. Blind Rays got a tricky gate. There's a few inside that might drive forward. I think he'll be positive and want to go forward. Can certainly win the race. Two American Eagle. Just had the beautiful spot on that track at Caulfield. That was 1,200 metres. I don't think that was a great race. Look, he's got a tricky gate as well. He's got to make a decision. And a little roughy here for the place, number four, Joint Venture. First exposure, race day to dry last time. You would have to say it was given absolutely no hope whatsoever in the run. Diameter came out of that race, and it was a similar, got home okay, Joint Venture. Diameter should have won at Flemington. It's just not the worst at massive odds. It'll be. It's in a great state. They will run the trip and not the worst at big odds. So five to beat three, then two and four.
Speaker 2No, Vallis, you were keen on that gallop at last start.
Speaker 3Yes, I was. And I paid the price badly, don't worry. Look, it's had the jump out since. I'm not sure how they'll ride it. They may well go forward. It's drawn well. It can improve. But that last run, the way Judas Tree went, that mightn't be much of a race, that last race. So this is harder.
Speaker 2Can we see an improved performance by Confederation? He didn't have much luck there the other day. McDonald was caught three wide with no cover.
Speaker 3I don't, I'm not, no, I've dropped off it, Gareth. I know it covered ground. It was just a run. Now you can have it. Did you think Wolfgat would get that far back first up? Yes, it had to. From the barrier, the last thing you want to do is gas them first up when they're not ready. You cook them for the whole campaign. So they chose the sensitive path, knowing the horse would run well ridden like that. Knowing it may well cost it the race ridden like that. But you've got a horse to work with for the rest of the campaign. When you come to Caulfield Guineas day, you don't want to do that. You don't want to have had a gut buster first up and ruined your horse.
Speaker 2And that's when you do your form for these, these horses in the early part of their preparation. Sometimes you can nearly put a line through them because you've got to think about what the end goal is.
Speaker 3Well, you remember that horse, uh, who was it? One of Peter Moody's filly when Sassapio won the race at Flemington. Olé Dancer, was it Olé Dancer? Yes. Like they drew wide and they had to make a decision first up. They went back. You don't want to kill the horse first up. You've got a whole campaign ahead of it. It's like you, you go out for your first run and you run flat out for two far, it's going to take you ages to recover from it. So the last thing you want with a horse is to do that. Yeah.

Let's have a look at race number six on the program, and this is over the 1200 meters for the mares. Um, Shadavar the seven is out, so no Shadavar. Let's have a look at the Bet365 market here, and you've got Bridal Waltz. It was very good behind to live another day there the other day at 250. Point Barrow at 460, Custom at 650, Photograph at $11. She is in Melbourne, Photograph, Inka Rooner at 13, Stardom at 15, Miss Freelove at 17, and then here comes the Star at 20 to one and Ole Dancer at $23.
Speaker 3Tricky race in a way, because you're guessing how a lot of these horses are going. Now, having said that, I've come up with the two favorites tend to be three. So big deal, but Bridal Waltz, good scratching of Shadavar for Bridal Waltz. That leaves Stardom as the only other leader in the race. I'm sure B Malum's drawn inside it. He'll look to jump, take control. These two mares met over in Adelaide. There wasn't much between them. Bridal Waltz got a four kilo weight turnaround. She was good enough first up. She had a beautiful run in the best part of the track, live another day was too good. For it, but still ran well. Look, it'll be fitter. It'll control the race. It'll give a big kick. I don't want to back it at $2.40, but it's the one to beat. Three Point Barrow. It comes through that race at Sandown in the Moyer. That, look, that was just, I don't know what happened that race. They just didn't change order. Bazelball rewarded, extra galactic, either missed the kick, got knocked over by Cavalry Girl after the start. Nothing changed order at all. Uh, Point Barrow gets back on the dry. She'll be, she'll be a long way back. She should be charging. I'll put number nine Stardom in for third. If it happened to fly the start and lead, it could take catching. I don't think it could sit outside bright or Wilson beat it, but if it happened to fly the start, it'll give you a big site. So not a race. I'm going to get involved in 10, three, nine. What do you make of the live another day form? Um, well, you're making excuses down the straight for it being a straight and the horse not handling it. I thought, I thought they would own the race a lot more than what they did. They let hedge. We own the race. Blake Shin just controlled the race on hedged. I sort of sat a length and a half off it. If you'd been down the straight walking it, I thought the best lines was sort of two, three, four, five. So out where it was, was probably not the best ground. So I didn't think they owned the race. Speaker 2welcome back to giddy up it's always exciting when the melbourne cup weights and caulfield cup weights come out david hagan does a wonderful job the chief handicapper there for racing victoria and he joins us here on giddy up g'day david thanks for your time but g'day gareth great to be here now this is the second year that you've raised the cup weights now it was designed because after um consulting participants in this beautiful game of ours they wanted the weights to go up so it would give more opportunities to more jockeys to ride in these
Speaker 8cup races that is essentially correct yes this is the second year of the increased uh weights policy so that that requires us getting a 59 kilogram top weight in both the caulfield and melbourne cup and from 2021 to 2022 we're going to be able to get a 59 kilogram top weight in both the caulfield and melbourne cup and from 2021 to 2022 we're going to be able to get a 59 kilogram top weight in both the caulfield and melbourne cup and from 2021 to 2024 prior to that it was only 58 kilograms that was the minimum required um and over the course of the last 15 years there's been a number of challenges with the weights and we've had various different policies in not only the top weight but the acceptance top weight with the acceptance top weight at one stage was 58 and then it was 57 then it was removed and then in the say the last few years after covert the challenges the jockeys were having um getting to meet those uh those weights and then owners not being able to choose their preferred riders or choosing their preferred riders and then at acceptance time weights either not moving enough or moving up uh we had a situation where my iraqi was two kilos different when weights were released in the caulfield and melbourne cup by the time he got to the caulfield cup weights then went up two kilos so encompassing all those issues and different changes in policy and after consulting with the broader industry um it was just agreed for last year uh that the top weight would go from 58 to 59 and the minimum for both cups would go from 50 to 51. so that's one part of the question um or one part of the issue in terms of why horses have higher weights than they were looking back historically the second part of the issue i suppose with some of the feedback um over the last few days from from yesterday afternoon is the difference in melbourne cup weights and caulfield cup weight so if you're looking at the caulfield cup weight scale that looks relatively true even though it's one kilo higher than previous years where the trick comes in we don't have a natural top weight as we do in the caulfield cup with sir delius so delius didn't nominate in the melbourne cup so effectively what happens there half yours who is 57.5 kilograms in the caulfield cup he then becomes the top weight in the melbourne cup but he has to move up from 57.5 to 59 and then everyone off the minimum or a new their true weight to the minimum they all move 1.5 kilos as well so if there was a horse that was on the true weight of say 50 kilograms he is now 51.5 and everyone who was a true weight of 49 and a half if there was such a thing as a true weight and i could use it they simply then moved to the new minimum of 51 as well so their weights don't change but everyone else moves up 1.5 kilos in
Speaker 2the melbourne cup so if sir delius comes out of the caulfield cup as expected half yours still
Speaker 857.5 he does and that's the next part of the equation so when we get to acceptance time we've got to have a horse in the weights at 57 kilograms yes if not then weights move up to that now the difference at acceptance time is that the minimum will move with the top weight so if the top weight goes up one everyone including the minimum will then go up one of the minimum will become 52
Speaker 2kilograms i've got a few questions for you david if denise martin and chris waller ring you up and say why should we start um eliana in a melbourne cup with 58 on her back what would you say to them
Speaker 8i would say look i must to be fair even when i look at the melbourne cup weights traditionally from where they've been previously they do look high but once you actually go through the field and the relativities in those races and i think it'll probably take a week or two for that to become more apparent in terms of where she is and in terms of her weight from last year um she was now as an older horse that's the equivalent of 54 and a half so i haven't got carried away in terms of what she's done in the last year and a half although it has been very exciting the temptation was there to take her a little bit further but she's effectively moved two kilos versus the weight for age scale from where she was last year so her true weight in these races is 56 and a half and i would encourage them look at the caulfield cup weights see the relativities to those horses and understand everyone's moved the same into the melbourne cup and when we made this policy change um as of last year we did take into account the fact in the caulfield and melbourne cups this century so 25 or 26 um runnings now if you include 2 000 then the equal two horses in the top of the weights or the number of one and two saddle cloths and and tires in weights they're basically outperforming um their participation rate by by nearly double so that's in the caulfield and and melbourne cup so it tends to be a little bit more difficult it tend to suggest that even though the weights are going up if you if you're number one and number two on the sutter cloth or even you've got a better than pretty much double chance of winning than you have for other horses down in the weights yeah i guess the argument to that is that they'll
Speaker 2go well i can understand the weights have gone up but it's still difficult to carry 58 or 59 around flemington over two miles but um it'll be interesting to see what waller and the connections do with eliana now like do they go cox plate champion stakes instead of the melbourne cup i reckon half yours will go to a caulfield cup now with 57 and a half it looks a better race for him than the melbourne cup if he wins the caulfield cup for instance would you give him a penalty for a melbourne cup now this is this is this
Speaker 8is a dilemma um and i haven't tried to think too far ahead um and i'm i am bound not to be making um predetermined decisions on it but it it does pose as a as a tricky one um i suppose there is one argument to say against the horses or emerging horses down the weights um he's already then giving away an extra kilo and a half to horses at the bottom the trick there is though with the weights being raised he may not be giving away um that eight kilos other than chocolates who obviously is 51 and guaranteed a run in the race the minimum might end up still only being 52 or 52 and a half at this stage and for those that have ballot orders and can see them online if you want to get into the race i'd say at this point generally top 50 which is sort of piggybacks um mark at the moment gets in and the caulfield cup without first acceptance is being taken um i would say it's probably number six 30 60 um before that's been taken so you might find that there's a substantial number of horses who where the minimum is actually higher um returning to that question with half yours look it's a tricky one um it will depend on who's in the caulfield cup if there are say six or seven horses he hasn't met that are going to the melbourne cup yeah that will have a bearing um it'll be the margin um the authority of the win um and then taking into account that he's already at 59 in the in the melbourne cup weights but look ballpark figure if he narrowly got home uh look guessing maybe there's a half and if he won authoritatively well yeah i'll wait i might wait a couple of weeks before i have to get to that
Speaker 2um i remember last year talking to you and we all thought sir delius was the best weighted horse say for the melbourne cup who do you think the best weighted horse is this time around
Speaker 8uh look that's that's a tricky one i'm a little bit concerned about not so much concerned i'm just i'm always i guess looking at horses that haven't been fully exposed and i guess that's the job of all the participants correct they're trying to get into the race without without being fully exposed so um i suppose mchar wine dark sea defiantly while they do appear to be weighted up to their um their best if i was to use the ratings they've got them in europe compared to other european horses they'd be even higher in these weights but i've taken a more holistic view that we've really only seen them perform once um at group level in terms of winning like this either at a distance for the first time or at their group level um so i think those three emerging horses look they're really hard to handicap i can't handicap them more on what they've done so far but i think they're better than that and the other one probably stinger glass he has the same rating as warp speed uh so i've given him effectively the same weight if warp speed was in this race taking into account the new scales um and i think he's going to win the race i think he's going to win the race i think he's going to win the race i think he's going to win the race i think he's going to win the race and look he was he almost won another another bound he wins the race so i think those four internationals pose enormous interest and i'd be stunned if you say one or two of them weren't putting their noses into the finish so they're the four that i think i'm watching really closely

Speaker 8he really is yeah i mean for his first four starts um you wouldn't have been picking him in a maiden uh even before going into the the saint ledger last start um fairly very conservative view on him and i was having trouble in terms of placing him down towards you know horses that had listed and group three form where and where did he sit in the whites and then now after the way he has come out and won that saint ledger uh overseas and here they've rated him the same as young bruegel yeah now young bruegel got 54 kilograms in the melbourne cup i've rated um highwayman exactly the same just with the new scale who he goes to 56 and a half look i haven't heard the feedback from overseas yet but i know when we gave young bruegel 54 kilograms um aiden i think considered it a bit of a luxury weight he might have even called it i think a handicap he

Speaker 9second dino yep i think he's got to be careful not to turn into sit and sprint with chow wolf i know chow needs a fast tempo but he's come back a lot better so i think you've got to put him margin on him first you got to put a margin on idle fly and from there you should run second so if we reckon if we're going off what a horse's pet trip pet setup is gringotts is 1600 meters ram week good 4d and he gets that on Saturday, G, so tick, tick, tick.

That lands, striking alibi, three pairs back on the outside and behind that horse. I think Bangkok Hottie probably takes its medicine from the gate here up to 1,400 metres, and Global Goal has to do the same. So it's an intriguing race. I just love the sectional strength of late of striking alibi. They're in the furious stakes. I think it's a positive map, positive jockey change, Gano. And that should lead to this horse getting every possible chance to be at its best over 1,400 metres. The horse I'm scared of is Chilly Girl and Global Goal. Chilly Girl probably looked like it wanted 1,400 metres last time, a little bit flat, gets a soft lead. And Global Goal has had that tick over trial, Gano, with the winkers on and really responded well. But striking alibi on top and one of the better bets of the program for me in race seven.
Speaker 12Yeah, it's a little bit different. Definitely in a sense of speed map-wise here, Dino. My query is, I thought Kieran would be able to be more positive Bangkok Hottie and land outside leader, but that'll be what it'll be. Roshini is probably obviously the fly on the ointment there. And Chilly Girl, to your point, she did look a little bit more dour last time, but her work through the line wasn't exactly screaming 1,400 metres. So query's there, but we all land in the same position, no matter how you get to it, Dino. I'm with striking alibi. I think she's just right place, right time. I really love to work through the line last time, and she gets Jay McEvoy, a bit of a jockey upgrade there, and maps to perfection, Benny. So happy to be with striking alibi.

So she will have to be put into the race somewhat, winner of the Shredbroke. And I'd imagine she's probably top eight in run. Mount Coupe, Grav to Burners have speed. What do they do with Jolly Star from the wide draw? You know, she's more than likely going to probably, I'd say, settle midfield with cover, like, or just end up four-wide exposed. But she's got an Everest slot, you know, sign up if they want one, right? Ninja's got one sign up, so I can't imagine they're too positive. So I guess those two horses are going to be sort of three. Or four-wide with cover. And Hedwell will be backing behind them. We'll need some luck. But he's clearly the horse I want to back here. There's going to have to be some sort of intent for him to be more screwed down than the other horses. He's going to have to produce what he produced last start. And if he does, I think he just wins the race. 1,100 metres, second up. No problem at all. I know Dino's concerned about the long break second up. But I think it'll be a different set-up for sprinters as opposed to stayers, Dino.
Speaker 9Yep. Fascinating race. And a little fly on the omen yesterday. Tommy Berry suggesting they're going to... It's sort of dragged back from the draw, which has added layers to it. It's not just the shorts you've got to dissect here. You've got to somewhat dissect the Everest and who's got slots, who's got the intent to run in this race. And you've touched on it there, Gannon. Hedwell's the one who doesn't have a slot. Jolie Star will more than likely take Chris's spot. And Ninja's already got one. So what do they do? I would suggest a lot of these are probably running for second in the Everest. So I think you've got to pick up as much prize money as you can before you get to Everest race day. So then I flip the script and go, well, there's intent for all these horses here. So Ninja's beginning. They're beginning really, really well here. So I dare say Tommy Berry's hand might be forced in the sense if Ninja jumps well enough, there's a spot there midfield, no doubt, for this horse to slot in. So I can't see it going back to last. If Ninja slots in within four lengths of the leader, I think this horse wins the race. Jolie Star will be praying for a three-wide line. If they get that, she's got every possible chance. And, yeah, my knock is the price around that $3.30 for Hedwell, second up off a long layoff. No doubt he can win the race. It's just not my profile. And if the setback wasn't there this week, gee, I thought Joker's grin was an almighty chance in this race. I don't think I've seen a horse trial as good as this for a while, and he is flying. So Ninja on top, and I'll save on Joker's grin, Benny.

Speaker 10It's an interesting one. I think he's going to be very hard to run down. I do think one thing that hasn't been spoken about enough this week is the fact that Nash Rewiller isn't riding him. And he's been a big key to Lindemann's success because he just knows how to perfect those sectionals in front. Blake Sheen isn't going quite as well. It's going to require a really smart ride to take off at the right time because I think Cosmic Crusade has got the better, better turn of foot. Hopefully Cosmic Crusade is right on his hammer. I'm going to tip Cosmic Crusade. He's fourth up. He's shown a real likening to Caulfield. And Birdman and Buckaroo, they can both run well, but they'll probably be in the second half of the field, won't they? It's interesting.
Speaker 2And this is a question that gets asked a lot. Why isn't Nash riding Lindemann? Now, whether he was booked into Gringotts before Lindemann, he didn't know what Chris was doing. Or the other perspective to all this, he just thinks Gringotts is flying. I'd go with the former rather than the latter. Yes. So you think he'd prefer to ride Lindemann. He probably would at Caulfield.
Speaker 10Chris just makes these decisions so late. So jockeys have got to make their mind up early.

Speaker 12Can I suggest that maybe Nash wants to get back on like a big dance or something and win another five mil on Gringotts. So he sort of keeps the ride there. That's a very good, that's a very good argument.

Speaker 12I don't think he'll lose anything with Blake's chin though. I think they're cut from the same cloth to be completely frank, you know, coming through the, the, uh, water house sort of set up and he'll be fine, uh, Blake shins. So, uh, rolls forward, um, slow, fast tempo. I don't think it really matters cuz he's, he's good at both. I think he's just continuing to improve throughout his preparation. Sure. He's been to, uh, this track before and this track and trip, and, but that was years ago, completely different horses time is as the horses continue to go to a new level and I think he'll be able to do that here on Saturday. Very, very easy bet to have, um, interesting to see. We're, uh, Willie Pike lands, cosmic crusader G, but, uh, I think I've got him mapped to land in the one, one. Yeah. From there, he will get every possible chance. The question is for mine, who's a better horse at this point in their career. Is it cosmic crusader or Linderman? And I think Linderman is, so that's the way I'll be going there.
Speaker 9Yeah, he somewhat snuck up on everyone, Lindemann. We sort of had him as that second-ranked, sort of extremely well-placed horse. But the figures he's put up in his last four starts, they're of a top-echelon horse. I look at the figures that Cosmic Crusaders produce, and he's sort of got to go to a length or two-length near career peak to win this race. He can definitely do that, but what I would double down on is we always touch on Lindemann as a 2,000-metre horse, maybe saw him out. His best distance prior to that was 1,800 metres. So I think if you had to pick any Group 1 to win for him, go back sort of 12, 18 months, it would be this race. So he gets every possible chance. You lose nothing. I think he should be favourite. Where does Cosmic Crusader land? I'm not quite sure, but Buckaroo and Birdman were also very good late in that Memsie too. So Lindemann on top, and I think he'll start favourite Saturday.
Speaker 10Yeah, and just to answer your question, I think you were saying Birdman-Buckaroo price difference. I think just with the race might be run, but it's an advantage Birdman because he's got a bigger turn of foot than Buckaroo. Buckaroo probably wants more speed on.
Speaker 2Yeah. Race number eight to Naturalism Stakes. This race is an interesting race because you've got Valiant King piggyback who's out now.

Speaker 11Yep. Zaran is the best. Back to runner so far. They've chipped a little bit away at St. George, but they also like Machine Gun Gracie at a price. They've been having a few bets at 19 and 17.

Speaker 12It does. Yeah, absolutely, G. So it'll be interesting to see what sort of goes forward with it. Do they be more positive on Dark Bonnet? Obviously, that horse, he was sort of back in the ruck and probably wasn't ideally suited. What do they do? Zaran, G, now draws a much better gate. What's it had? Eight, 10, 11. Can they be more positive on that horse? I think they can, and I think that's pretty much game, set, match. If Zaran's within two lengths of the lead to sort of come to 600 metres, I think he just wins the race, Benny. It's as simple as that.
Speaker 10Yeah, he's got to be on top for me. I just think $2.80 is getting really, really tight now. I probably wouldn't be betting at that price. Two horses that go on the quad, he wouldn't, Vernie, just complete forgive run last time. Just did way too much work. And Machine Gun Gracie, I agree. I think it'll roll forward and give a bold sight. There you go.
Speaker 9Yep, no speed on paper. I think that's why we're suggesting these horses that are going to land up on speed and drawn well are going to be advantageous. I just can't see the price difference between Deacon and Zaran. I know Zaran was much better late, but Deacon took off on the turn, did a stack of work off that fast tempo around the corner and then just faded the last 200 metres. That was first up. I think second up can land in front of Zaran. You're getting $2.30 around that a place versus $2.70 for Zaran. I just think the place bet for Deacon's a terrific play here. Race, no speed, inside draw, up in distance and strips for the G.
Speaker 2Race nine to Sarupa Clark Stakes, 1,400 metres, still no scratching. So Harry Jott, the first emergency, and Tennessee Bound, the second emergency, are still looking to gain a start in this group one. Here's Aki Tunbridge.
Speaker 11Yeah, interesting market. So Lady Shenandoah is up the top, $5. You've got Regal Award at $6.50. Angel Capital, yours at $8. They're backed Warnie as well. And one other, yeah, they like Regal Award as well. In terms of the hold, though, I can tell you that 41% is Lady Shenandoah and 22% Angel Capital, second best backed.
Speaker 10Benny Caluzzi, who wins the Sarupa Clark? Oh, who knows? It's really up for grabs this race. I was a big fan of what Warnie did last start at Sandown. He might be back and buried a little bit, but he's a result for me. Evaporate's also a result for me. I know the wide draw's a little bit of a sticking point, but he might have really come of age, this preparation. And Persian Spirit at $26. He started favoured over Warnie last time. I think he can run a bold race as well. Dino?
Speaker 9Yeah, fascinating race. Plenty of speed. There's a lot to dissect. Seppels was one I looked for early doors. First row was outstanding. Second row, scratching the head. So I moved on from that. I think Lady Shenandoah gets a chance. Inside draw, 1,400 metres. I think she got every possible. The roughy that I... that I wanted to spec was Sabarge. I think we referenced that Memsie race. Out the back, snag, 59 kilos. And was the fourth best home there in that race behind Birdman, Buckaroo and Co. So that's good form. Now goes 59 kilos to 53 kilos. Draws out. I think I'll back both those horses, G. One inside, one outside. So Lady Shenandoah, Sabarge, at a big price.
Speaker 12Mickey Gannon, yeah. Yeah, I found it hard enough to sort of identify one clear winner here, G. But Lady Shenandoah, she definitely gets a chance from that draw. And I think she's probably the best suited to win the race. And you're getting the right price to find out. So I'd have her at top. Wouldn't shock to see Sun God with some even breaks be really competitive in the finish. Warnie, Benny's made a good case for Warnie. Tom Kitten was a complete wrong price. And then they bet $34. That was ludicrous. Because there is simulations here where he gets the right race shape and they do overdo it. And he flies over the top. And I agree with Dino, with Sabarge. So all of those runners, you'd be throwing them in your quatties for sure.
Speaker 2No angel capital there, Mickey. I'm nervous now.
Speaker 12Um, no. Why? No, sorry, G. Uh, look, why? I guess it comes down to being price sensitive. And I think there's plenty of horses here that have figures that are very much around his that are much bigger prices. So a horse like Sun God with 52 and a half kilos compared to an angel capital of 56, figures are right there. They're basically aligned. And you're getting $26 for one and $8 for another. So there's a big spruik on one who should be winning group ones. And there's no spruik on another. Comparatively, I just don't see it. I don't see any value in it. So if we're looking for quatties and value to extract value out of a quattie, that's sort of what you're going to do. You've got to leave some of these shorter horses out. But yeah, look, run top four, please.

Speaker 10Benny? 1,100 to 1,400 isn't necessarily a great setup, but Savoyard is a very talented horse. Yeah. I think $4.20 is a good price to find out. He'll be motoring late. Gets in so well with a 53. Cruiserweight's a deserved favourite, but Savoyard is the bet for me. Needs one more scratching. It'll get it. Yeah.

I don't know a lot about the horse, but the figures it's put up are exceptional, and I think it's a really good setup for Savoyard here. 11 to 14, some sort of query for sure, but you've seen it handle a high pressure 1,400 metres, second start in its career, put up a really good figure. So wait until we need to start, get to start. I think you're going to be winning. But the good news is, Gareth, if it doesn't, you get your money back.

Speaker 14the best bet for me, or the one that I think looks the good, I mean, obviously Autumn Glow, but I'm not going to steer you into her. Keeping on this horse, Joseph Ible's a pretty handy trainer down to the south of Sydney, down towards Canberra. And he's got a horse called Barron Gary in race two at Rambwick on Saturday. This horse sat three wide over the 1400 at headquarters here in Sydney. Gee, and it's a very good horse. Tricky course and distance to do that and win. And he was gone on the home turn and should have dropped down. He just kept on surging to the line. The overall time for the race was well inside standard, about three quarters of a second inside standard time. His late splits are pretty good. He might be sort of a potential stakes horse. I think we find out tomorrow. He's in a mile, a midway mile. I think he, off what he did first, off where that trajectory is going, he should just put him away. But as I said, he just needs to go and do it one more time. Then we can go, yep, this guy's on his way to good things. So he's the best up in Sydney outside the Wonder Mare. So just in Sydney, in the Kingston town stakes, just keep an eye on the horse called the Euphrates. He's a big lumbering thing. And he ran in that Chelsea Stakes and Lindemann first up. They sat and sprinted. I don't think it suits him. He's got four miles, 3,000 metres in Europe. He was with Aidan. He's now with Gay and Adrian. He had about 100 weeks, nearly two years off. And that was his first up run. So keep an eye on him from a Metrop point of view. I know it's only a group two these days in Metrop, but he'll still get a good field this year. And then down your way, sort of hearing that through the middle will be the way that Caulfield will play. And I thought in the two features, look, I can't go past Lindemann, mate. I reckon with that extra run under his belt compared to everyone other than Cosmic, he gets the dictating front. And I just reckon, we'll find out with Cosmic on Saturday. But I reckon, I don't know what your thoughts are, but I just wonder if he's a 2,000 metre horse or is he more of a 14 miler and he won the Northerly over in the
Speaker 2West? What do you reckon? It's the second question I'm going to ask Pikey today after I want to know what his speed map is when he joins me after 11 o'clock for Great Man. But it's, I think that Bob wants him to be a 2,000 metre horse. Like only good horses did what he did 1,400 to 1,800 in that preparation in the summer there in WA. I just think he's a horse, I don't know. I think 1,800 metres might nearly be his sweet spot to tell you the truth. So, it'd be interesting to see how Pikey will ride him tomorrow.
Speaker 14I didn't want his comments to be honest with you. I mean, we all, he's got to give it to
Speaker 2each other. I love it. And you know what, everyone deserves to have their opinion. And you can agree with and you can disagree with people. And someone that I look up to told me this and it always has lived with me. Do you know what the most, the biggest, the best gift that we've got in life? It's a choice. So, we can make a choice and do whatever we want really. Sometimes we make the wrong choices. But Pikey can listen to those form experts or he doesn't have to listen to them. But Pikey just needs to be himself and it's, and it's, he's been pretty successful at doing that. So, as Mark Hunter pointed out, that he didn't think there was anything wrong with that ride. He thought that he rode him pretty well there in the Memsie and then others think differently. So, it's the game that we live in, isn't it? It's based on opinion and some are going to get them right and some are going to get them wrong.
Speaker 14Gareth, if we didn't all have different opinions, there'd be no such thing as a market. The industry wouldn't exist. So, we should appreciate different opinions, not shoot them down. But that's the Underwood anyway, mate. Look, I'd love to see Pikey come out and get the job done. He's a very good horse, Cosmic Crusader. But I just like Lindemann. I just like the fact that Blake gets control in front. And then the horse you've got to be wary of, of course, is Buckaroo. He was second in the race last year, the third dealiest. Some would say there's no third dealiest this year. And he won the year before. And he did. He won two years ago with a brutally fast tempo. And then last year, they just jogged in front. So, he's a horse that's very adaptable to a change in pace. He can win off any tempo, which is not always the case with a lot of animals. And then just down there, what else have I got down there for you, mate? Who wins the Sir Rupert Clark? Oh, you know what? I'd love to see Tommy Kitten get it. Like, come on. What a turn up that would be. Go watch the replay of the men's. Very good. He's never got out. He's never got a crack at them. So, he was just humming around and behind them. Look, he's got the way. But we all know what time. Like, he carries 59 when he runs a weight for age. We know what times he can run under weight for age. The question is, can the others go that quick with weight off their back? And I don't reckon. I reckon most of them can't. So, I reckon Tommy Kitten's an each-way player. And I find it real interesting. And he's been causing a few headaches of punters with the placement of his horses. But I find it very interesting that Chris Waller's got Sun God going there first up as well. Because he's won his first up run last two preparations. Albeit in easier grades. But if a bloke like Waller thinks he can have a crack first up at the Rupert Clark, it tells me that his shorts must be going very well at home.

What do you make of this card, first of all, at Ellerslie? Where do we start with your best bets?
Speaker 15Look, I've got a couple of bets at Ellerslie. One, I'm looking for a bit of value and one has come up really short. So, race one and race two is where I'm betting at Ellerslie, so getting it all out of the way early. Race one, there's a three-year-old called Magnate, who I think represents really good value. It's a fairly even line-up of three-year-olds. He's won a couple of trials really impressively leading into his debut and, look, Andrew Campbell wouldn't travel the horse unless he thought he was a chance. So, in a race where I think it's pretty open, Magnate is the horse that I've decided to go with. I love
Speaker 2it, Jane, when you've got a value runner at $9.40 in the morning on a Saturday at $14. It's a beautiful thing. What else have you got for us?
Speaker 15Look, well, outside of that, the other one that I like at Ellerslie is very short in the market and it comes up in race two, the 65 Overground, and the runner that I like here is a horse called Paper Moon, and I have thrown him out previously, but I just thought he picked up his maiden win really strongly last start. He won by about six lengths, and what I liked about it is he ran the fastest last 200 metres, which suggests that going out to the 2400 metres on Saturday isn't going to be too much of an issue for him. He's the only real natural leader in the race as well, so despite drawing out a little bit, I think he can work across and lead pretty effortlessly. Beautiful.
Speaker 2And then we're racing, of course, the other meeting in New Zealand tomorrow. We go to Trentham, I'm pretty sure.
Speaker 15We do, and it's the three-year-olds at Trentham that I'm interested as well, race number two, over the 1000 metres. Now, just for full like being very open. I actually have shares in a filly going round in race two at Trenton. And I'm tipping against her, but that might prove to be the wrong thing to do.
Speaker 2Nothing worse when your horse wins and you didn't tip at all back it. But I love your transparency there, Jane. We appreciate that.
Speaker 15I've put Ronaldo on top here, rather, number one. He made a huge impression on me as a two-year-old. He had three runs. He won his first two. There's been really good form out of those two races. Then he finished fifth in the Manawatu size Prodigy Stakes at Group 1 level. He was very raw. He was a very big two-year-old. He always looked like he was going to improve. And I like the way he's trialled. The blinkers are going on. The trainer has said 1,000 metres might be a little bit sharp for him, which I do tend to agree with. But I think that on potential, he's the best horse in this race. So I'm hoping that with the blinkers on, he can run really sharply first up. My filly is a filly called Varvey. She's still a maiden there, but she was stakes placed behind Lara Antipova as a two-year-old. She's actually trialled up really smartly with blinkers on. She'll wear blinkers again. But she's in the same boat. 1,000 metres is going to be a bit too sharp for her. But being transparent, the trainer has said to us, if you normally are $5 each way back up, put $10 each way on it this weekend. That'll do us. He's quite confident, but I think she's running into a really good horse in Ronaldo.

Speaker 16Mate, we're going to start off. In race one, Bohemian Angel. Now, this horse hasn't broken through this campaign. However, it's racing well. The rise to 1250 metres is ideal, Gareth. Now, just hoping settles a bit closer to the pace this time. No reason why it can't. I've got a rate at about a $4 chance. It has come in a bit. It is an open little race. But I think if there's a race that this horse can break through, it is this one tomorrow. So, race one, number four, Bohemian Angel.
Speaker 2Beautiful. What else have you got for us?
Speaker 16Mate, going for a bit of value here. Race three, number seven, Teardrop Rotation. Now, strips fitted for that first up run was on heavy going. Now, I also wanted to mention with the better going now, I think we are going to start seeing a few form reversals. And I think this could be a horse that will be much better suited on good going. So, obviously, Stable's had an opinion of this. It's had, what is it? Had five runs in black type company in its career, mate. So, obviously, it hasn't quite lived up to that reputation. But I think back in this grade, I think it's well drawn to give us a nice sight at double figure odds, mate. So, I've got a rate at a $6 chance.

Speaker 16Mate, we're going to go to race four, number two, Codename. Now, we mentioned. Mentioned this horse as a horse to follow in our, a couple of weeks ago.

First of all, I just want to know what your speed map is tomorrow, if that's okay in the Underwood States.
Speaker 17You've stirred everyone up, Pikey. I was waiting for the TV shows in the morning. I'll get all the information on where I'm allowed to be.
Speaker 2Mate, I've known you for a long time, brother. I've never really heard you this fired up, mate. It sounds like you've had a gutful.
Speaker 17I think this is actually, I want to clear the air a little bit. I think everyone's misunderstanding where I'm coming from, and a few of my words were probably wrong, so they've been directed wrong.
Speaker 13Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 17So I'm going to clear up. I just didn't like the fact that there was what I was calling gurus out there doing speed maps of where and how I should ride a horse. Yeah. Absolutely, you do your tips. And you do your form, and you look into it. But going as far as to say, needs to be pushing out here and getting up. And it's not, and this actually has nothing to do with my ride last start with Cosmic Crusader. This is just in general. It's something that's sort of always been a little bit annoying to me, that I feel like some of these form analysts can try and have influence on a race, about where a horse should sit and how a race should be run. That was mine. main gripe really. Yeah. So, and which is fair, whether you did or didn't like. like the ride, the ride to me is irrelevant. That's in the past, that's done. But yeah, that speed map side of it really gets under my skin a little, I guess.
Speaker 2So talk us through that ride there in the Memsie, Pikey.
Speaker 17Yeah, well, obviously I had a tricky speed map. Some of them had me pressing on to be outside the leader, but I think they missed one little fact that he hasn't jumped very well since being in Melbourne. He actually hasn't jumped very well for a while. Tried to remedy that with a tail and the man on his head. And while he did get out better, he kind of flopped out. He didn't actually step out very clean at all. My one instruction was make sure I get cover. I've seen Jimmy Starr there. He was my only option for cover. So I elected to grab hold and follow Jimmy. And why wouldn't I? He was, I think he was a favourite right up until I think I overtook him late in the bedding. Yeah, then obviously went pear-shaped from there as well. Got in a bit of a bumping duel and a tussle down the side. And ultimately the horse runs fantastic. And I was sort of out of position for half the race or all of the race, I guess. But I didn't have a lot of good options either. Slow away and then working up the hill. I don't know. You can look at it either way that you want. I don't think I was winning that race anyway. The winner won very well. And did I cost myself second? Possibly.
Speaker 2Yeah, that's how I feel. We had Mr. Peters, Bob, on after the show there on the Tuesday. And he said, well, the instructions to Pikey is that he's a slow beginner. But you make sure that you, I don't want you going forward, digging him up and then being three wide without cover outside the leader. And then he gets keen. Because we've worked on him to make sure that doesn't happen. And he would have been really angry with you. I would imagine if you did get keen in the middle stages. Because that would have made your job, I would imagine, Pikey, listening to Bob, a lot more harder to try to get him to settle over the 1,800 meters come tomorrow.
Speaker 17That's right. And Mr. Peters always looks at the big picture. He never gets caught in the moment. He's always looking for the next race and even the next preparation. So, yeah. That's definitely something I've worked hard at, making sure that he does settle. And, yeah. And that's right. And he said to me, make sure you get cover.
Speaker 2Tomorrow's another interesting race because Lindemann looks like he's the leader. And then you've got Pinstripe who would probably go forward. And then you might be a horse that has to sit outside the leader. Would that worry you, Pikey, if that's the case?
Speaker 17No, I think as long as he lands there and he's comfortable. But I think, like Mr. Peters said, he doesn't want him scrubbed up to be there. So, I'm sure he would be completely fine there. I think he's a pretty sort of happy horse. He doesn't give much grief at all other than just not being all that fast away at the moment. Yeah. So, I think if he landed there, it wouldn't be a problem in the world. What's his best trip? Well, it's hard to know, isn't it? But I definitely think it'll be around the 2000s or 2400, somewhere there. I know, I just know that Mr. Peters' horses, they always seem to thrive under that more pressure. The further you go, they seem to just keep coming into their own. So, I don't see why he wouldn't be any different. He grew up in the same mould as all the others.
Speaker 2So, I think he's got a nomination for the Caulfield Cup. But I think, talking to Bob, it's Underwood Stakes, maybe. He's got a lot of power. Then to the Cox Plate, depending on how he goes. And if he can stand up and win tomorrow, like the market suggests, he'll probably head towards a Cox Plate. It is exciting, Pikey, anyway, I reckon, is it? That you've got a good horse to be part of the Melbourne Spring Carnival once again?
Speaker 17Absolutely. It's great. And I've caused a fuss along the way, too. So, hopefully, I pull my finger out and get a result tomorrow. So, I'm really enjoying it. I'm in a lucky position. I've been offered a really nice horse. To be competitive in these races. So, yeah, I've got my saddle and my frequent flyer points are racking up. So, I'm having a good time. And, like I said, though, as well, it's all results-driven. I want to get the job done.
Speaker 2Personally, Pikey, I'm loving it. I think it's great that you're showing your personality. You're believing in your own ability. And you're sticking up for yourself. And people can make their own decision. But it's been a lot of fun. And I think, as you pointed out, Pikey, what game we're in, we're in the end. We're in the entertainment business. And I think the game is better off when you've got athletes like you in the game that do have a little bit of fun and say what they want to say. Because the game is better off for it. Because you have a look at social media. My show, for instance, we haven't stopped talking about it. And it was on all of the racing shows there yesterday. I think it's great, Pikey. I'm looking forward to the salute. Have you got something in mind?
Speaker 17No. I'm not much of a saluter. But, look, I just want to get the job done. I've put myself in a position where I'm in a bit of a hide and nothing now that I've opened my mouth. So I need to back it up and get a result. But, overall, I do. I enjoy the banter. I love it. Like, if someone wants to be over the fence and tell me I didn't do a good job, not a problem. I keep telling everyone, look, I'm the best cricketer. Sitting on the couch, every ball comes out the middle. I'm just the best. And that's part of the fun. Absolutely, people get involved and give an opinion. It's part of the game. That's part of the punt. That's their prerogative.
Speaker 2Embrace it. Yeah, it sounds like you're embracing it as well. Have you had a chat to Mr. Peters? Has he been hearing your comments, William?
Speaker 17No, but he will probably tell me to be quiet shortly, I would imagine. He's been away. I think he's been away in Europe. So, yeah, he hasn't got a hold of me just yet. I'm sure he will talk to me tomorrow.
Speaker 2Gone are the days, Pikey. You used to be like, you needed Mr. Peters more than he needed you. But these days, I think he needs you more than you need him.
Speaker 17Oh, no, not a chance. I wouldn't ever think of it that way. No, no. But, no, I definitely sort of, I'm not sure how to put it. I'm enjoying this whole trip and I just want to get the result on the board. For what he's shown him. He's bringing me over and I just want to get the job done for him. And, yeah, as I said, I've opened my mouth, so I've got to back it up.
Speaker 2And I guess, do you feel as well that you need to get it done for WA? It seems like there's a lot of support, as you would expect, Pikey. But everyone will be cheering you home, I reckon, in your home state.
Speaker 17Yeah, you're probably right. It probably is a bit of like I'm flying the flag for WA as well. So, yeah, I want to represent well. And also... So, you know, represent our racing well as also with the, you know, with the rating systems. And this horse looks like he can, you know, keep those ratings safe for a few, for a little while yet. So, I feel like it's a bit of a responsibility that we've all got now that we're here to do the best that we can, you know, represent home and keep our races up in the ratings.
Speaker 2I'm surprised in a way that... Do you say, do you listen to the commentary? Do you listen to the... Do you listen to the noise or are you... Or do people tell you, Pikey?
Speaker 17No, mostly I don't listen to it at all. No. I don't have any... I don't have any social media. I don't have Facebook. No, I stay right out of it, generally.
Speaker 2You should get social media now, I reckon.
Speaker 17I might sign up. No, it was a bit full on early in my career. I didn't like a lot of the stuff going. But maybe, maybe I'm a little more out in the open. Maybe. It would be good. I could cause a little more banter.
Speaker 2Well, I'd love for you to get this Group 1 because I don't think you... Do you think you've got something to prove, Pikey? I think you've done enough throughout your career that you've got enough runs on the board.
Speaker 17Ever since I've been riding, everyone's always wanted me to come east and prove myself. Yeah. I have done at different times and I've failed at different times as well. That's racing, so... I'm always, you're only as good as your last ride, so I have something to prove to myself. I don't have anything to prove to anybody else.
Speaker 12No.
Speaker 2Would you ever think about coming back east again or even if you've got an opportunity to go to Hong Kong? Because I know talking to Douglas White, he reckons that you were starting to get warm before you headed back home.
Speaker 17Yeah, well, that's because my ribs were sticking out. I was dying of starvation. But no, look. I did actually start to come good a little bit late in my career there, but I'd probably already made up my mind mentally. And look, never say never. You know, that's how my career has kind of unfolded a little bit. I never expected to even have an opportunity to come east, let alone, you know, be in Hong Kong at one point as well. So, never say never.
Speaker 2No. Sukuma tomorrow in the natural, isn't it, Pikey? Your thoughts there?
Speaker 17Yeah, another lovely ride to have. to have. Really looking forward to it. His first up run was fantastic. He's savvy the line late. A bit more distance certainly won't hurt. Drawn right there in the middle. So, yeah, really looking forward

He gave us his time, to give you his time this morning, I should say, as well. Yeah, you get the feeling he's one of those jocks. I actually, whenever I mark him in a race and say he's cooked one or he's been deep or held up or he's stuffed a ride, the very next time he rides that horse, he will not cook it again. He will give it an absolute 10. Like some jockeys, I think, might be nervous to make the same mistakes twice. He is so desperate to right his wrongs that he gives it a 10. So I reckon Cosmic gets every tomorrow, whether it's good enough or not, I have no idea. But he will give it a 10 tomorrow.
Speaker 2There's a few jocks that are in the game that I've seen that have a real competitive, you know, you know, appetite. And Pikey's one of those. Like even when we were at WA, in WA, Pete Anthonis, we used to sit when we were working for Sky Racing and you could hear Pikey yell and discuss when he used to get beat in a photo finish. Like he's a competitive beast, Pikey, and you've seen it this week. He's, he's been a, I've loved it. Yeah. I think it's been great. I think it's been great on, I've loved the comment coming, the comments coming back Pikey's way and it's been good for the game, a bit of banter.
Speaker 19Yeah, I completely agree, G. And even having your own horses that you own, obviously, and when Willie jumps off and he knows he's made a mistake and he's basically not even talking to you and the other owners, he's already walking off muttering to himself. He lives and dies by it probably more than, than most. So, I mean, look, looking at that, it feels like it's a good thing. I think he's a, I think he's a absolutely huge chance. And to be honest, I was listening to a lot of the form judges saying Lindemann. I'm not actually concerned about Lindemann at all. First time with Shin on board, he's obviously not losing too much, but I think Birdman's the main danger. I think it sets up really nicely for those two peeling off late splits. So, go Pikey. I'm on board.
Speaker 2Yeah, Birdman right on his back. But one thing you can't say about Pikey, and if you know William Pike, and from a punter, all we want really is a jockey to go to war for us when our money is on. And he tries, he tries his heart out. Sometimes he might try too much, but he's won a lot of money for a lot of punters over the time. And yeah, he'll be having a fair dinkum crack there tomorrow. So it's, it's, it's built up the perfect type of narrative for a race like that. So bring it on. Anyway, we need a winner at Belmont. Who wants to start with their best bets? We'll start off with you, Terry.

Speaker 18Yeah, go to Pete. I'm just lacking enthusiasm. All I want to talk about is big racing now after listening to Pikey and all this. I feel like a little winter Belmont meeting just doesn't get the blood flowing.
Speaker 2Take the, yes, take the new ball then, Pete.
Speaker 19Well, I think race eight, number four, I have to follow my money with double the fun. I think this horse is just absolutely flying. And I think the speed map suits his horse to the T. Midfield with cover looks absolutely perfect. Tash Faithful sticks and she's getting the best out of this horse. I know, you know, probably should have won there last time out. But I think that form actually holds up really well for this. So at the price, race eight, number four, double the fun. I have to have something on Nicky Motor again. I'm going once more back to the well. Race five, number four, because I think Nicky Motor just suits, again, she's just a really good thousand metre horse and she likely finds the breeze here. And then probably the other horse in the feature I'll have something on is race four, number eight, Searching Times, which I know there's a lot of people that are going to like it. But I think it's a really good horse. There's probably going to be a few opinions in this race, but I think this horse is really, really talented, G. And I think this is her chance to stamp herself for this preparation. So for me, the three horses on the card, race four, number eight. We've got race five, number four, and then race eight, number four. I'll be playing those three and doubles and trebles, the whole lot. The whole shebang.
Speaker 2Hey, do you know what, Terry? What about, no wonder you wanted him to start off with the new bull. I've never heard Pete Anthon is so bullish on a Friday about a Belmont meeting for quite some time. So it's your turn now to take it.
Speaker 18Well, I knew there was a reason we gave him the new cherry, to be honest with you. I'm happy bowling into the breeze this weekend. So I'm with him with two of the three. I've had something small, Nicky Motor. I'm a bit different to Pete with my map. I think they'll be desperate to hold up a King's Honour and Divine Beliefful breeze. I actually think they'll probably just sit in behind with Nicky Motor. But the money last, I think it was fives into, oh, wasn't it? No, not fives. It was sort of $3.50 into about $2.50. It was strong money for a little battler and she missed the kick and that was never in it, but it was the run of the race. So while the money missed, the money was right, I think. So I completely get having a follow-up bet at near five bucks. We've doubled the fun in the last as well. I think it's a two horse race with Cosmic Waltz and it's clearly the better value. Cosmic Waltz is showing a penchant not to want to beat one home. And double the fun probably beats, yes, I know the other day with Streaker got in third. If Tash Faithful doesn't fumble the reins in the final 30, 40 metres. So I completely get that. And I'm with Pete with double the fun. That's one of my main bets for the day. Peter, we still got Peter there. I want to ask you about the Kinnivan price. It opened up $2.30. And I thought, well, I'm not going to be on. That's fine. It was the horse I'd marked favourite. I was $2.50. So I agreed with the local man and it just continued to drift. Every other agency went up $3.50. $3.50, $4.00. And it's basically just pushed the price out to well over $4.00 everywhere. I was $2.50. I think it lands in the breeze. I think it gives a big kick. There's not a huge amount in behind it. Peter, how did you mark Kinnivan? It's the horse that I'm, it's a drift that's scaring me and usually drifts only excite me.
Speaker 19Well, I didn't have a great opinion of this race. I thought it was a really difficult one to bet into. Mostly because Pondmaster just reeled off just such a massive peak first up and I've got no idea how to price that horse. Pike's jumping off. Ozzy's back on. You can't really knock at what it did first up, but I'm always wary of that first up peak. And then Kinnivan, first time $1,200 last time out and kind of ticks the box visually, but it was such a slow walking race that it's really hard to gauge whether or not that was a true test. But then there's no real speed in this race either. So that's a long way of me saying I've got no idea with this race and I don't want anything to do with it. So I couldn't really understand the drift for Kinnivan outside of maybe the $1,200 query is still putting people off. It's a big question mark for me.
Speaker 2I should have asked Pikey about opportunistic because it looks like he's going to be partying in Melbourne on Saturday night. He's not getting to Kalgoorlie for the Boulder Cup on the Sunday. Is the $1.85?

Speaker 18You're going well when you're turning down $1.80 pops in features on a Sunday, aren't you? You know life's going all right. You say, no, let Chrissie have that one. He can have me nice book of rides. It's in the gold field. So they can cancel the booking. Pike had it at the exchange bar at 6pm on Sunday night, I'd suggest, to celebrate.

I just want to mention the Jester's son in that race It's not a horse I'm going to be backing But I just love the way Zephan Who doesn't get obviously a huge amount of opportunities at the moment Losing his claim He's just riding that horse so well And with so much confidence So good luck I probably won't be betting in the race And I'll just be cheering for the Jester's son Because I think it deserves a feature like this

Speaker 20Yeah, below average tempo expected here Lindemann mapping to get a really comfortable lead Under no pressure We love Lindemann And I've got them profiling clearly on top here Just a pat on the back of my head Perfect profile for this race He meets sort of every historical profiling And ratings parameter factor That I assess is needed to win this race 12 of the last 13 winners of this race Settled in the top 5 And a key danger is Birdman and Buckaroo They both still map Has settled 6th and 8th Quite a fair way back on the slow tempo All the last 15 winners of this race Were 2nd or 3rd up Cosmic Crusader comes here 4th up And 13 winners from 59 runners at 44% POT And an SP under $8 last start Again, Buckaroo and Birdman Don't qualify there Lindemann, we backed him a couple of weeks ago He led all the way And won comfortably To win the Group 2 Challenge For us by a couple of lengths He just maps to dictate here easily again Under no pressure I reckon the only slight concern Is that regular rider Nashville Will is not aboard But Blake Shinn takes the reins And he's a pretty uncomplicated horse to ride I think he's just the type of horse Who's very hard to beat When he's in form and on a dry track Which you'll get You'll get it tomorrow And he just looks perfectly placed And clearly the one to beat

Speaker 20Look, I'm keen on Striking Alibi here She won a set Metro race By three lengths on debut At Ascot Then ran a group two level Which was transferred to Chris Waller She was seventh in a Randwick 1,045 metre trial Won that by half a length The last 400 was plus 4.5 Above standard It was the second quickest Of the 109 trialers On that day at Randwick She beat Revengers Who won the million dollar golden gift For us last prep That really took my eye That trial And then first up She flew home Bit of an unlucky third In the furious behind Bangkok Hottie and Chilly Girl Bangkok Hottie was third up there Chilly Girl was second up there And Striking Alibi was first up I think there's She's open to the most improvement James McDonnell aboard here That's obviously always A positive ride to change No matter who he's replacing And she maps better here too I think she can get An easy 1-1 type run here Or even sit outside the leader She could keep Chilly Girl pocketed If Hachini comes across From the wide gate And Bangkok Hottie Just seems to map Sort of wide no cover Unless she pushes forward also So I can just see Jane Mack reading the situation here Getting an absolutely perfect run On Striking Alibi Who's open to the most improvement Well has won this race Four times in the past ten years And Jane Mack's been aboard And three of those winners I think she's a really promising filly And I think she She wins on Saturday And then wins the flight stakes

Speaker 20Yeah I think the market's got the Favourites the wrong way around here Alduca just meets Absolutely every Single historical profiling And ratings parameter Needed to win this race All eight winners of this Gold Nugget race Have said within the Top four in running Alduca just maps You get a really nice Comfortable lead here From barrier one On a below average tempo Top jockey Damien Lane aboard Is winning him three times For two wins In a close second Alduca's a really Consistent type 23 starts For eight wins In eight seconds He won the Listed anniversary of ours At Flemington last prep He's second up here And he's won his past Two second up runs His first up run I thought was Was quite forgivable He sort of raced Three and four wide No cover Ran eighth But another will Ran ninth in that race And then came out And ran third In the hot group one Maccabi Diva last week So it's a handy form race The favourite in the market You mentioned there Ten Commandments But all eight winners Of this race Are drawn inside Barrier seven Ten Commandments Has drawn thirteen He also doesn't meet All the ratings parameters Usually needed to win this race And he's a bit of a wet tracker And has to face a dry track here So I'm happy to be against Ten Commandments And this thing Alduca And on pace From an inside gate Comes from the ideal Lead up race Maps with an easy lead All his best runs Have been when he's settled In the top two And his failures are generally When he doesn't get that Top two spot Like last start He just tops all the Key ratings parameters Needed to win here And I think he looks A great bet to win The gold nugget

Speaker 21around 35 000 35 grand incredible result that's more than we've ever um raised over the past few years with some significant contributions from uh from a range of people across the racing industry shout out to aaron morrison and his executive team who chipped in a couple thousand there and kanga was there he had his pink shorts on uh running around as long as it wasn't his pink tights well they were pretty tight actually but he forked out uh five five grand and uh harry coffee who's obviously the face of the the fundraiser um he raised it or his fundraiser telly was the the leader with eleven thousand dollars and so to donate 35 grand was was wonderful uh big thanks to the sail turf club and their foundation for contributing ten thousand dollars as well and killmore racing club got involved their members jagged the quaddie and donated that to uh to uh the the team coffee and trv as well so it was it was a wonderful morning out at albert park and thanks to everyone

We're celebrating our group one winners there tomorrow with a new group one winner member category, so it's going to be fantastic to see about 60 jockeys and trainers from yesteryear on course. But in terms of that feature race here, Lady Shenandoah on top, Angel Capital, you don't know what's going to happen there, but nothing to surprise if he finished home over the top. And in terms of the group one, Underwood, I was with Cosmic Crusader, but I'm starting to come around towards Birdman, who I think might just hopefully, the key with Birdman, he's got to just jump well from gate four. If he can land inside that first three or four, he might just be able to show a nice turn of foot and sort of dash that he showed in winning the Blamey and the Peter Young.
Speaker 2The weight came out yesterday for both the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups, and I wouldn't be surprised if you see the Melbourne Cup champ and the Caulfield Cup champ head back to Caulfield to defend his title half yours with, well, he gets 57 and a half there in the Caulfield Cup now, so it's going to be interesting. And plus that naturalism, there's a few horses in the market like St. George that need to finish in the top three to qualify.
Speaker 24It's a long jam to get in, so I think with half yours, should he he's attempting to, should he go to the Caulfield Cup, he'd only be the third horse to complete the back-to-back in consecutive years in the Caulfield Cup. And it is enticing because in effect, if he was to win the Caulfield Cup, you wouldn't expect him to be penalised given the fact he's already got 59 in the Melbourne Cup. So it is appealing. I think if they weren't to run top two or top three in the Turnbull, you'd think it's the more realistic option than the Cox Plate, but the stable know what they're doing there. And yeah, the naturalism, we saw a great depth in the Hedley a few weeks ago. The average handicap rating for the runner in that race was historically high, and that's carried into the naturalism as well. So I think there's a good pool of stayers that are going to be racing throughout the Melbourne Spring Carnival, and that should feed in nicely to our Country Cups
