Speaker 2And kicking off Stable Mail here on this Thursday is Tommy Stokes, the co-trainer, along with his father, Philip Stokes. And they've got some big chances, especially at Caulfield on Saturday. Tommy, hello to you, mate. Morning, Gareth. How are you, mate? Good, thank you. Has life changed for you since you've been on the ticket now for a few months or a month and a half?
Speaker 3Nah, not at all, mate. Work's still the same. Jobs are still the same. Just get a bit more recognition, which is great.
Speaker 2Regal Award. Can he win a Rupert Clark first up?
Speaker 3Yeah, we really think he can. I think it's his best chance to win a Group 1. Handicap conditions. Gets in nice in 52 and a half kilos. And we've got him very forward. He's been tuned up with two pretty solid jump outs. And then he didn't have too long out after the strad broke too. So we had the Rupert Clark in mind a long way for a long time. And he's ready to go. Just need him to jump. Absolutely. He hasn't had those jumping issues his last probably two or three runs, which is great. And even in his jump out.
Speaker 2I'm touching wood, Stokesy. I'm touching wood. I didn't want to jinx you. So am I, mate.
Speaker 3Oh, am I. Yeah, we know he does do a lot wrong. But he is maturing and he's drawn low, which is great. And yeah, we couldn't have him in any better order, to be honest.
Speaker 2So you think mentally this will be the best that you have in this preparation?
Speaker 3Yeah, I think so. Sort of the penny starting to drop. Mind you, he still does get very fierce in his track work. Early days, this prep, we thought this might be the prep we can take the earmuffs off and improve those couple of lengths. But we took him off a couple of gallops to go. And he lit the track up on fire. So we're keeping him on. And yeah, we're really happy with him.
Speaker 2And I guess if he jumps, he gets a lovely gate in this big field. We know that he likes to be on pace. But Nydorf should have some options there if he can get him to go at the start.
Speaker 3Yeah, if he jumps, that's half the race over for him. You know, that's the key. He's going to be a roll forward horse. I'd be surprised if anything else leads him up. Especially fresh.
Speaker 2Yeah, it's going to be a terrific race. And yeah, he's a big chance for Eagle Award. He's been well supported too with Bet365. What do you do with him after this? Do you go to the Chirac?
Speaker 3Yeah, that's definitely an option. We've also got the back of our head. A Golden Eagle is also on the cards. But obviously, some superstars are lining up in that. So we're going to have to weigh up our options after Saturday.
Speaker 2Deacon was superb there the other day. Can he win a Naturalism?
Speaker 3He definitely can. He's in career best form, in our opinion. His first up run was super. There was improvement there. They ran some seriously slick times first up in that race. So we gave him a little jump out in between. Three-week gap between runs. And we're really happy with how Deacon's going. He should be a genuine winning hope from a low draw as well. The Barrier Gods have been really good to us this Saturday.
Speaker 2We're not getting $51 this weekend, however.
Speaker 3Yeah. Yeah, that's right. He's sort of shown that he's definitely up to him. So he's a winning hope. So where do you think he'll be in the run from that low game? He'll be just off the speed, I would have thought. I haven't had a chat to Lockie yet. But he's very versatile. He can be close to the speed or sit off it. So he's drawn a good barrier to sort of be where he wants.
Speaker 2And in the 1,000 guineas per hour, do you think Rebel Tuesday can improve?
Speaker 3She's obviously in a hard race. Her form probably looks average to the eye. Her sort of first few runs is prep. But she's just looking for a barrier and a dry track, which she gets both of those on Saturday. And she's peak fitness up to a trip that should suit. So she'll run a career best. I'm not sure if that's good enough. It's probably not. But she'll run a lot better than a market price suggests.
Speaker 2We'll put her in our trifectas in first fours. What's it been like teaming up with Noel Keller, who makes another comeback in recent years? Recent times. And he's been riding now for a little while. But he seems to be teaming up with your team. And he's going pretty well. Noel?
Speaker 3Yeah, he's sort of started off the season in really good order. We've gone along with Noel for a very long time. Sort of his old man and my old man go back a long way. And it's good to team up with him. He's actually very invested, even in the track work and sort of placement of the horses. And he's working very hard. I'm not sure how much track work he's done in previous years. But he's working hard and riding well. So it's good to have him on board. He's making his own luck, I guess, then, it sounds like. Yeah, absolutely. He's very determined and it's good to see.
Speaker 2You've got a host of favourites there at Morpherville. How many winners?
Speaker 3Oh, mate, I was looking at the markets yesterday. And, jeez, they're all lunders in my opinion. I don't know if it's the Noel Keller tax or what. I think it's the Stokes tax. Extremely well played. Yeah, they're extremely well placed. They're probably all just city-class horses, but they're all in their right races. Not many of them have upside, to be honest with you. I don't want to sort of deter you from them. But they'll run for their best. And if that's good enough, yeah, they'll be going close. But probably Bargain Boy is a good price. And he's probably got the most upside out of the lot.
Speaker 2So that's race six, number two, Bargain Boy there at Morpherville. That's why we ask you this question. Tommy, if I gave you $100, what would you do with it this weekend?
Speaker 3I would go 50 Deakin, 50 Regal Award. Just in career best form, I reckon.
Speaker 2So race eight, number 11, Deakin and the Naturalism Stakes. $50 on the stayer. And then Regal Award to win a group one. Race nine, number 13, in the Sarupa Clark Stakes. Tommy, always great to catch up, mate. We wish you the best of luck this weekend.

Speaker 2Welcome back to Giddy Up, great meeting at Corfew on Saturday, the Sarupa Clark Stakes. It's one of the best Sarupa Clarks we've seen for quite some time. It's going to be a beauty. You've got the defending champ Seppels that'll be going around after he's really good second in the Strudbroke before he went for a break. And he's also got his stable mate there engaged in Von Hawke, who was also very good in that Strudbroke from a terrible gait that day. And their trainer Cliff Brown joins us here on Giddy Up. Cliff, good morning to you, mate. How's things? Good, Gareth. How are you? Good. Thank you. I can't wait to see Seppels back. Can he go back-to-back in the Studbroke? Sir Rupert Clarke?
Speaker 4Look, I'd be surprised. I think the record of horses first up is very poor, and that sort of makes sense. But, you know, they had a deep campaign into the middle of June, and, you know, I think the other horses, a few of them that ran in the Stradbroke, resume as well. And in order to give them a break and come back, you know, you sort of end up at this race. Yeah.
Speaker 2So what would be the difference between him, say, this year compared to last year then? Is it just that race fitness?
Speaker 4Yeah, absolutely. He's got to come on it. You know, this race will really bring him on. You know, last year he'd had three trials and had a run as well. So, yeah, no, big difference.
Speaker 2What's his big grand final this time around?
Speaker 4I think the Champion's Mile.
Speaker 2Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 4You know, I think that's the sort of race, and that's, you know, he'll be right for that, hopefully.
Speaker 2You had a wonderful spring last year. Like, he was mighty in this race, but his best run was that Golden Eagle when he just had a champ in front of him.
Speaker 4Yeah, he did. Look, he had a really good spring. You know, he won that race, as you said, or I said, at Caulfield, and then the Rupert Clark got interfered with in the Tourac and then was brilliant in the Golden Eagle, as you said. Look, he hasn't done much wrong. What he doesn't like, he hates a shifty surface, and he got that at Rose Hill. He doesn't mind it heavy, as long as you can get a bit of footing in it, you know, as bizarre as that sounds.
Speaker 5Yeah.
Speaker 4But, no, no, he's good. He's a lovely horse. He'll run well, but I'd be surprised if he won. I'd be more than happy.
Speaker 2Yeah, yeah. No, surprised. What's your expectations with him? What's the tick then? Is it first four, first five?
Speaker 4Oh, look, I think if he ran first four or five, I'd be more than happy. You know, you can run fifth and still be a bit disappointed, too. You can run fifth and run very well. So I think race complexion and luck in running, all those things. So it's one of those things. He could get held up and run eighth, you know? So I think it's, you know, difficult if you make early predictions.
Speaker 2That's a very good point you make, Cliff. Fonahawk, geez, he's underrated, isn't he? Yeah. He was mighty in that Stradbroke.
Speaker 4Yeah, he was tremendous. He was good in the lead-up. You know, he's been, as you said, he's probably a bit underrated. He's won a Waterford Crystal Mile. No, he's a nice horse. I think he's very good. He's a little, I'm very pleased with him. He's probably more forward than Seppel.
Speaker 5Okay.
Speaker 4He's never run, I don't think I have, over 1,400 metres first up, but he seems to be far more tractable. Yeah, look, I think if he gets to brakes, he'll run a really good race. I'm not saying he's going to be going to go out there and win.
Speaker 2No.
Speaker 4But I think he'll run better than people think.
Speaker 2So you're surprised that, like, there shouldn't be too much between these horses. Seppel's around $11. We bet $3.65, and you're getting, what, close to 50 to 1 for Fonahawk.
Speaker 4Yeah, I suppose the, you know, yeah, I suppose it's probably a fair point, especially at the weights and things like that. No, I think he's really in good form. You know, neither horse were raced early in their lives, so although he's seven, Fonahawk, he's still, you know, got plenty of life left, and I think he's really in his career-best form at the moment.
Speaker 2Big field with some tempo in that last race, you would imagine anyway, but we've just got to hope Saviard gets a start. He's the third emergency at the moment. It was a pretty good seventh there first up.
Speaker 4And that's what you say, you know. You get held up, and you run seventh, beating the two lengths, or a bit over two lengths, and he was great. He ran incredible sectionals that day. Look, if he doesn't get a run Saturday, he'll head to Bendigo, Sunday, so there's options for him, and he's still got to do it, but he looks a nice horse.
Speaker 2Yeah, he looks like he's above average anyway, doesn't he?
Speaker 4He does, yeah, and the form around him, I think that's always very important. The form around him's always stacked up well, so, no, nice horse.
Speaker 2A few questions coming through for you, Cliff. Do you go to the Epsom with one of those horses on the way to, say, a champion's mile there, maybe with Seppels?
Speaker 4Look, probably Fonahawk. Yeah. I would be tempted to, well, not tempted, if he runs well, he'll definitely head that way. Okay.
Speaker 2Yeah, and what do you do with Seppels in between then?
Speaker 4Not sure. I'll just see how he runs. You know, that'll determine whether he needs another 1,400, whether I can try the mile next. It just depends. Yeah.
Speaker 2If I gave you $100 this week, Cliff, what would you do with that?
Speaker 4If Savioid gets a run or goes to Bendigo, I'd have it on him.
Speaker 2Beautiful. So that's race 10, number 19, or in Bendigo, those fields will come out a little later today. It's great to catch up with Cliff. Good luck this weekend, mate.

He's a good chance for Cliffy Brown, so we'll get on the phone and he'll give us an update there. And he had some chances at Ballarat tomorrow. I don't know if Castle and Hive will get a start, however, in that gold nugget. But Sam Freedman joins us. He's got some key runners, especially at Caulfield on Saturday. Hello to you, Sam. Morning, Gareth. Exciting time of the year. You've got two very, very progressive three-year-olds in the Caulfield Guineas Pro League. We'll start off with American Eagle. He was good there the other day from a nice gate.
Speaker 6Yeah, he was. He got the right run. He was straightforward. Race couldn't have panned out any better. He began well from the gates and put himself in a spot and was, you know, very straightforward. It was a solid performance. You know, I'm not sure it's the A form, but, you know, he's, all you can do is beat what's in front of you.
Speaker 2So he did a good job. A little trickier from Saturday's gate for Mark Saar from gate number eight. What do you think he will do from there?
Speaker 6Not sure. I haven't had a chat with Mark yet, but the horse has got some gate speed, you know, if he wants to use it. Got a fair bit of faith in the way Mark rides our horses. So, you know, if he has a strong view on where he wants to be, I'm not going to take that away from him. But, you know, there's a, there's a bit against him. He's got to go from soft track form to a firm track and he's got a sticky gate. But, you know, he's a progressive horse and, you know, if he's a good horse, he'll, he'll, he'll offset the gate and he'll, he'll be hard to beat.
Speaker 2Where do you think Wolfgap will settle tomorrow or Saturday?
Speaker 6Well, he should be a bit closer than last start. He's got a nice gate. He's had the run. You know, he's building into his prep. He's still, I think he's still got some, some improvement in him out of Saturday. He's very strong, good doing Colt. So he'll improve again from the weekend. But, you know, he, he's, he probably needs a good hit out. So, yeah, he'll be a bit closer and, yeah, he should be, should be very strong again late.
Speaker 2Who do you think will be better over the 1400?
Speaker 6Look, I think I've got more confidence in Wolfgap running a strong 14. Um, you know, I think anyone watching him last start would agree with that. And American Eagle, I think he's got a bit more of a sort of, as soon as you ask him, he quickens. So he's very, very straightforward in that sense. You know, he quickens down, um, you know, off the dimes. So it'll come down to a little bit, what, what runs they get in transit. The gate's probably in Wolfgap's favour. But, um, you know, I think if they went steady, I think it, it, it'd probably suit American Eagle a little more than, than Wolfgap. He can just take a little bit to, to build through his gears and, you know, around Caulfield. If he, if he sort of drops the bridle, you know, he'll take a little bit to pick up, but I think he'll be the strongest of the two late.
Speaker 2Inkaruna, um, she was okay first up. She gets lane from a low gate. Your thoughts there in the 1200 metre man's race, race number six?
Speaker 6Yeah, I thought she ran quite well first up. I don't think she, I don't think she ran quite well first up. She ended up in probably the best ground as it happened on that day. You know, that, that, that meeting was generally, those sort of inside lanes were a little bit preferred, particularly at that stage of the card. So, um, she knocked up a bit late. She's drawn a softer gate. She presents a bit fitter. Um, 1200 is probably, you know, that's, that's probably as far as she wants. Um, but she'll get a, she'll get a nice run in transit. And we've left the blinkers off again. We've probably got them up our sleeve. So the third up runs, third up, fourth up. So, um, it's a good little man's race, but you know, she's, she's very consistent. She'll, she'll, she'll give you a site for, from a place perspective.
Speaker 2And Point Barrow gets a new jockey, um, on Saturday, the daughter of Blue Point. So Mark Zara takes over there. Um, she gets a tricky gate as well.
Speaker 6Yeah. I mean, Barrow's for her probably not as significant as can be for others. You know, she's arguably, she's probably been much better when she's drawn wide actually, cause she can build through her gears and, and get herself in touch at a point when, you know, she can, she can launch at them. So, um, look, she's very good mayor. She's, she's going very well. Um, I, I think this is probably, you know, the most straightforward race. She's contested for, for a little while, but a lot of respect for bridal waltz. It's got very good forms, very well weighted. Um, so, and it'll, it'll probably get a better run in transit. From a map perspective, we'll have our work cut out for us. But from a talent perspective, I'm very happy taking her to the races. And if we're in touch on the point of the turn, I think she can be all over them if the track's fair and they're making ground.
Speaker 2Yeah, that's a good push for Point Barrow. Good to see Tom Kiddin taking his place in the Sarupa Clark Stakes. We don't get to see this too much these days in our handicaps, but this is nearly a proper handicap. Seven kilos between the top and the bottom weight. And he's got to give two and a half kilos to horses like Evaporate and Seppels. But he's earned that. Can he win with 59? The question is, I guess, in a Sarupa Clark Stakes, Tom Kiddin on Saturday, Sam.
Speaker 6Well, yeah, I mean, you know, the alternative was to go and run a nice fourth or fifth to she's alibi. So I had a chat with the team at Godolphin. I was pretty. Firm on heading to the Rupert Clark. You know, we're clearly aware he's going to have a big weight, but. Yeah, he's 570 kilos. He's carried like, yeah, for me, the weight's not not going to stop him. I think he'll he'll run very well. You know, and I do like the the nature of a handicap for him because you get a lot of tempo. There'll be horses. There'll be some horses gasping for air at the 1400. In a strongly run race. And I don't mind the draw because the men's he probably wasn't ready for a hard run. And he certainly didn't have that. But he's he's he's ready now to, you know, make a make a long searching run if we need to. And. Yeah, I mean, he's got the weight for a reason that, you know, he's he's won his share of group ones. And, you know, he's ultra consistent. The market's disrespected him in my view.
Speaker 2100%. I can't believe he's $26 now.
Speaker 6Yeah, it's look smarter minds and I will set the market. But it's yeah, it's a it's a it's a little disrespectful for his record and everything like that. But he's I think he's going well. He's where Tuesday was was very good. And, you know, if any of them have chinks in their armor, you know, Tom will be a Tom will be all over them late. So I think you run well.
Speaker 2I've just got a feeling now down the outside Tommy kit. You've talked me into it. Sammy Zara put him in your quaddie. Yeah, 100% pigs and mud syndicate will be all over it. Look out. They'll go straight to where the East English sailor fee wins. It sounds like next next year might be more Adelaide magic. Yes. Yes. Yes. Forget about Tassie. Now we're off to Adelaide. What about the Barry clad at Ram? We can race for the hippo takes the ride.
Speaker 6Well, he wanted a big prize last time out. Sticky enough. Gates doesn't generally win out of turn. But, you know, he's going well. He's in form. Winkers went on last time out. So they might be sort of the key to him now. So he'd be one to one to throw in an early quaddie or whatever it is early. You know, he's yeah, he's tracking along.
Speaker 2Well, the Cameron handicap punch lane gets an inside gate. The inform to me. Look, but that's a red hot Cameron handicap this year at Newcastle.
Speaker 6Yeah, it is. And look, I think the horse probably needs soft, soft or heavy ground. And I'm not sure we're going to get that. So we'll have to make a call on whether he takes his place. He's difficult horse to place, you know, and he's got it's bloody enticing because he's got a good guy. Good jockey. Yeah, he can make his own luck. But yeah, I think he needs it softer, heavy to see his best.
Speaker 2Usually got some good chances today at Mornington, especially in the Cadolphin Blue.
Speaker 6Yeah, Parkay, she's half sister to Tentiris. She's got very good speed, fast filly. Thousand metres at this stage. Yeah, that's that's a trip, you know, so I'd say she'll be up near the front of the bus and she's pretty forward. So I think I think she can be hard to beat.
Speaker 2Yeah. And then you got Ladhar and Lonestar in race six.
Speaker 6Yeah, Ladhar, she's first up. I think she'll probably improve for the run. She's probably one of the class horses in the race, but she's got plenty of improvement in it. And Lonestar, yeah, he probably needs to step up a notch. So we'll, yeah, that's a go with him.
Speaker 2Can you win the gold nugget with our duker tomorrow at Ballarat?
Speaker 6Um, he's probably another one just needs a bit of soft ground. So, um, yeah, we'll, uh, yeah, we'll, we'll, we'll, we'll see with him, but drawn a good gate. And I think he is going, I think he's going well. We just, um, yeah, we, we, we didn't get a lot of luck last time out at Corfidron wide. So he can bounce back, but just would like a bit of sting out of the ground.
Speaker 2And looking forward to seeing if, uh, your snitzel filly, um, go around that first race at Ballarat. She had big reps on her.
Speaker 6Form looks good on paper. Obviously ran behind Sertano Glow on debut. Um, and then we were a little disappointed in our last run in the autumn. Um, trials have been pretty good. You know, it's sort of time to step up and play ball now. So, um, yeah, we'll, we'll, we'll, um, we'll see if we run from that gate, but yeah, it could, could be a filly to follow.
Speaker 2I've got some questions for you after this question I'm about to ask you, but Sam Freeman, a hundred dollars. What would you do with it? I, what would you do with it this weekend if I gave you a hundred dollars?
Speaker 6Uh, I don't know what the price would be. I'd have probably the same race multi with, uh, Wolfgap and American Eagle, you know, probably both, both to run top, um, top three, hopefully.
Speaker 2Beautiful. You've been listening to Troy Causton's and Calvin McAvoy on the Wednesday agenda, Sam. It's a long segment, Gareth. Yes. Yep. Any, any tips for us? We might have to get you on.
Speaker 6Um, yeah, I, yeah, I was listening to a little bit of the debate around the Derby, um, over the last few weeks. So what's your, I hold a slightly different view on, I can understand Troy's perspective around making sure we keep it a group one. Um, my view on the Derby is it's a very unique race to prep a horse for it takes a very special and unique horse to win the race. You know, any trainer. We'll tell you my sources won't handle it. And that there's the argument there that it's too early in the season, but I think that's the part that makes it so different. You know, it draws on a very different sort of horse to handle the prep and to, to get to that sort of trip at that stage. Um, and I think it, it does throw up horses that, that, that can really go on, you know, you, you, you've got plenty of Victorian Derby winners that have gone on to some good races. We had warning a few years ago, ended up running in the Melbourne cap. Um, you know, you, you got riff rocket that went on with it. I, I think it's got its place on not, maybe it's slightly controversial. I, I wouldn't mind if it, if it's downgraded to a group two, it doesn't change the race. You know, it's still, it's still a Derby. It's still a very unique race to get to, and it's still going to hold relevance. It doesn't hold relevance from a breeding perspective. In any case, so, so whether it's a group two or a group one, I don't know, maybe I'm on my own and thinking who cares, you know, it's, it's a staying test. You call it a 2000 meter race. You may as well not call it a Derby, call it something else. And what, what's, what you're not testing the horse. You've got a spring champion the week before the argument for me is, yeah, it's a reflection of the entire calendar and the way that it's positioned. You know, you, you, on occasion, you'll get a. A spring champion winner, try and back up and travel, which is near on impossible. Um, so you're not going to get that generally, but you know, you're, you're, you're butting your head against the wall. If you think we're going to get to be in Melbourne to, to line up and how that, that calendar looks for a spring champion into a Derby. But yeah, that, that's for me, how you'd get a stronger race is to give that as the, the main lead up. And. And, and go from there, I'd have no issue running horses in a, in a Derby if they're, if they're ready for it. Like I said, you need a unique horse with a, with a good constitution, a good brain. And for me, the group one part of it is, you know, is, is not, is not, is not that important, but I could be alone in that.
Speaker 2Yeah, you make some really good points and it is the Victoria Derby after all, like it's a, but as Calvin pointed out and Troy and a few other trainers, is it difficult for you to sell shares in horses? Is that you might buy at a sale for a Derby? Absolutely. It is. Yeah, it is.
Speaker 6But again, it's, it's, it's still part of the challenge. You know, the challenge starts at the sales and it goes all the way through to winning the Derby. So there's some great stories that come out of Derby winners. You know, warning was bought for 60 grand in Adelaide and was initially bought as a trade horse, which the owner's got a shock when we couldn't get him trolling up any good to get to Hong Kong. But. every Derby winner has got a unique story and I can understand the trepidation around buying stays but you know you've got to take a punt if you want to win a derby you've got to you've got to take a punt on buying some stays and being patient and your owners have got to do the same and the reward is there um i wouldn't be against increasing the prize money even if the race were were downgraded to a group two you know i think it's there should be just reward there for owners and trainers that you know are willing to to push the horse to get to the race and you know no trainer is going to line their horse up unless they think it's handling the prep and and going to line up and and run well um but yeah i think it's you know you bring it back to 2 000 meters and you know you want to tell me we don't breed stays and we don't have all that i mean that that's not going to help you know you just get you'll get a a spring champion 2.0 and you know sydney may end up putting on a a mile and a half five million dollar race to replace it and you know i think it's going to be a really good race and i think it's going to replace the victorian derby you know so i don't think it should change and with regards to the asian patent committee i'm oh it for me yeah it'd be great if it stays
Speaker 2a group one but if it ended up a group two soviet we didn't have a committee for six or seven years anyway so like something and and races like an everest and those type of races didn't even have group status so and everyone knew that the quality of those races anyway and i agree with the prize when he's there you're running the horse yeah and it's like black type and i've always and i think guy molcaster made a good point when i asked him about this is like i know black type's important but you tell me a horse that finishes third in the tazzy oaks it gets black type that puts more value on her like yeah exactly everyone can work it all out when they go to the sales these days with ai and and all the information that comes your way you can work out if the mare was any good
Speaker 6really well and i think that's right buyers and breeders are right in tune with yeah with what the real black type races are and there's there's obviously a heap of them but um you like you said you know we we'd have fillies that could could go down to tazzy and win their stakes races and the breeders and owners that that have them would rather win a saturday race at flemington you know one the prize money is probably better and two the mare is on tv in front of in front of everyone and everyone knows it was a good mare you know it's probably got more value than than than winning it at launceston so um yeah i think the black type discussion is i'm not going to say it's not got relevance it's obviously got an important part of the the whole breeding industry but from a derby perspective you know no one's no one's realistically standing a victorian derby winner and expecting to um you know observe is obviously you know the one that that came out and won the australian guineas and showed that he's got speed derby isn't the thing that's put value on him it's it's it's the guineas so um that's just my view
Speaker 2now you make some very good points hard to argue sam and i think that racing you don't want to make it boring like if you're going to have all these races at the same distance and um the same horses like um a 2000 meter race um within a week of each other um and you see it even with the the seven stakes to a underwood stakes it becomes boring in a way as i said it's it's a broader
Speaker 6discussion that you know i'm not um breaking new ground to say that the competing states is is unhealthy for racing on the whole it's it's great for owners and trainers that can you know position their horses where they see fit tom kitten's probably a good example of it um a horse like that 15 20 years ago would have to be racing against you know she's alibi autumn glow and they'd all be running against each other every couple of weeks yeah um which is better for the sport on the whole but i love the lead up to a derby you know when you're going through the form you you've got the query on which horses are going to run the trip which horses are going to handle it which horses aren't you get to you get to the half mile and you know some are starting to really feel the effects and some are just starting to to get into their work and yeah i think it's i think it's just too unique it'd be a shame to yeah to be changing it well you just

Speaker 7for trent yeah it um yeah she she won very impressive i think she's got good ability and without you know i mean there are certainly nice fillies in there but again at the same time they're sort of all fillies and they're not all fillies and they're not all fillies and they're that have won one or two races, so with the threat three-year-old filly such as her, once you break that maiden, there's not a lot of options. It's sort of you're either all in the group races or you're taking on tough older horses. But certainly the draw makes it tough. She'll just have to go back and ride her to run well, ride her to hit the line and see how we fare.
Speaker 2Yeah. Blind Rays win again in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude?
Speaker 7I think he will. I'm sure. Look, I mean, the Freedman's horses, they look good. No doubt the second horse the other day at sectionals were pretty good, and American Eagle does look a very good horse. So you're probably the top seed out of the Melbourne Colts anyway for getting the Gunn-Sydney Colts. I think probably whatever wins that race on Saturday, I'd imagine would be the sort of Melbourne horse to be in the Caulfield Guineas. Yeah. I know, again, they all do, but he'll take big improvement out of that first up run. Yeah, I certainly think he can win.
Speaker 2How does she ride him from that gate?
Speaker 7I think either one or two things. He'll push forward and sit outside the leader or lead, or he'll go the other way and drag him back. We'll leave that up to Blakeo, but it might be a good opportunity to go back on him, being that it's not the grand final and seeing if he can finish off. But I'll leave that to Blakeo. If the horse brings out the lid, he'll sort it out.
Speaker 2Let us know what you're going to do. I don't know if I want to be backing him at 2.90 if he's last, but you never know. You'll have to tell us before you do. Tell us if you're going to tell Blake to go back. Let us know, Trey.

Speaker 7Yeah, look, he's obviously, he looked a super horse and then he's had his problems and it's always hard to get them back to what they were. If he ran up to his best, he could certainly be hard to beat. It actually wasn't a bad run last time. He got shuffled back and they sat and sprinted and he hit the line good without the flashing lights. He really needs to step up in this sort of race if we're going to hope to get him back to something. But again, wide gate, we're just going to have to go back, cop our medicine, but can't fault him, happy with him. So I think he'll run well.
Speaker 2Yeah. Keen Observer, Sabretooth compressing over the next couple of days. Any winners there?
Speaker 7Keen Observer can be hard to beat. He's dipped them out to 1,400 metres trying to chase one of those $100,000 English maiden bonuses and he just didn't get the extra 200 metres. So back to 1,200, shades go on. I think he breaks through tomorrow.
Speaker 2If I gave you $100, what would you do with it this weekend?
Speaker 7I'd go $100 on blind race into a horse kicking off on Saturday. I'd go on Sunday back for this campaign called Mount Saviana.

I thought I just want to... I'm so keen to see what you have to say about him.
Speaker 9We've just been waiting for the rain to stop. The tracks have turned him up a bit. That's all it's been. No, he'll run on Saturday. He's been ready to run for a few weeks now, so he'll take his place. Probably he can run well. I'd say he's got a good bit of improvement to come. He's been pretty trying to prepare horses for the carnival. So, yeah, whatever he does Saturday, he's certainly got good improvement to come.
Speaker 2And this filly, Profligate, I know a lot of good judges are tipping her on Saturday. She was excellent, wasn't she, first up?
Speaker 9Yeah, well, she's never run poorly in the three starts that she had. She won her first start in a race, and then she ran second to blind race in the Anzac Stakes on Anzac Day, over 1,400 metres, and then first up in the Atlantic Shield. So she ran very well there. Probably wasn't 100% comfortable on the... ..on the slow track. So we think with a good surface come Saturday, she'll be more than competitive.
Speaker 2Yeah, and she settles... Where do you think she settles from that lovely gate?
Speaker 9Well, she doesn't have a lot of gate speed. That's going to be a little bit of a trick with her. So she'll... Yeah, we want to ride her to where she can be comfortable and give her a chance to finish her races off. Because we think probably once she starts stepping up to the mile and possibly on the bigger tracks, like Flemington, she'll really be well suited. But hopefully she'll be no worse than midfield.
Speaker 2OK, so 1,000 guineas horse, but do you think she might be a better oaks horse?
Speaker 9Well, I think she'll be better still when she gets to the Edward Manifold.
Speaker 2Yeah, there you go.
Speaker 91,600 next start after Saturday. So I think she'll be really well suited. But the races are at Caulfield, so you've got to go to Caulfield.
Speaker 2Yeah. Could she get to the oaks distance?
Speaker 9She's not bred to. I'm not a real big fan of three-year-old fillies going to 2,500. All the colts, to be truthful. So I'd say more than unlikely that she would go to the oaks.
Speaker 2What a world we're living in, Bea, when you've got a horse that's qualified for the Melbourne Cup but you can't get a run in the naturalism.
Speaker 9Well, he has.
Speaker 2Oh, has he?
Speaker 9He's got to start. Yeah, he's got to start, yeah.
Speaker 2Yeah, he's all ready to go then. You've got your jockeys fired up, pikeys ready to go.
Speaker 9Yeah, we're very fortunate they had a similar race in Sydney to Kingston Town. And a couple of the horses which were in front of him decided to stay up north. So, yeah, he's going to start, which is very pleasing. So, yeah, the horse is in good shape.
Speaker 2Yeah, Valiant King is out and Travolta is out as well. I should have known that. So can he win on Saturday?
Speaker 9Well, he can run very well. I think probably still short of his best distance, but the horse is going particularly well. He's trained in good style since his first up run. Still got a little bit more to come. He's coming. He hasn't quite come yet. Still a bit woolly, but he's getting there. So, you know, Saturday is another stepping stone. But look, I'm sure he'll run well.
Speaker 2I guess, are you training him differently in a way, this preparation, because you know what your grand final is?
Speaker 9Oh, not really. He messes more with him. He's got good residual fitness from, you know, running middle of May and had a bit of a short break. So we're just letting each run just sort of bring him on that bit more. So he'll run Saturday and then he'll possibly only have one more run before the Melbourne Cup.
Speaker 2All right, then. Mine and Sonny, what can you tell us about this debutante there tomorrow at Ballarat?
Speaker 9Well, she's a filly. She's had a couple of jump outs. She's come along. She's taken time to get to the races. We haven't rushed her. I would think that probably whatever she does tomorrow, she's certainly going to improve with the run under her belt, but she could certainly sneak into the money.
Speaker 2Jeez, that was a good return by She's a Hustler.
Speaker 9Yeah, she went well, didn't she? Yeah, very good. So, you know, we were pretty delighted. I thought if she could run top six in that, in that race, you know, we'll be on song. And she certainly did more than that. And, you know, sectionals were good. I think the thing with her, everyone sort of forgets, like the races up in Queensland, most of them were on pretty ordinary ground. So her best form is always on good tracks. So we got that last Saturday. So certainly think that's probably been a bit of a turnaround for her.
Speaker 2If I gave you $100, what would you do with it this weekend?
Speaker 9Yeah, I think I'd be putting it on profligate.
Speaker 2Beautiful, so that's race four, number five. There's a lot of love for you, as always, on the text message, Beggy. But I promise this person, he's asked me a hundred times, Autistic Power. This is my first horse with Graeme Beggy, he's so great. I can't wait to see it race. How's Autistic Power going?
Speaker 9Well, he's doing a bit of pre-training at this point. And he'll be back in the stable, I think, about next week, I think. But he's a nice horse boy, a horse called Novair. He's had one little trial, or jump out, I should say, and went shinny, so we tipped him out. Obviously, being the grandson of Savaville, so we've given him plenty of time.

Speaker 10on a tag it over the 1800 meters yeah he's in really good form um in in his right class so he's off a quick turnaround i think he's come up favorite which is deserved and uh we don't do much with him in between he just goes back and forth and he's got a lot of time and he's got a lot of time to get back out the single but um yeah he is a great chance if he can carry the weight what'd you make of your topic future there the other day he was okay he he just got caught out for the change up in speed he's fairly one-dimensional he's a stained prospect of the future so if we step well we will go forward and take it up on saturday i think all right beautiful spy why can
Speaker 2he win over the 1100 meters in the third race well he can definitely win on ability but he's just
Speaker 10gone awkward so we're working back from the magics and he's got nice improvement so he'll be in each

Speaker 10um saintly dancer how do you ride her on saturday a lot closer than what we did yes we we um got that wrong unfortunately and she had too much work to do from where she was so she has good gate speed normally so i've imagined she'll be first for the race but i think she's going to be the first for four or five in running, but of the three, she's the pick. The two other fillies are very progressive. Vice Lady ran behind Freedman's filly that ran second Saturday, the Captain T's, so she's got nice form, and Mystical Realm will really appreciate the step up to 1,400.
Speaker 2Who's the pick of your horses in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude over the 1,400?
Speaker 10I'd have to go with Sarah Fox. She was good first up, and the rising trip will definitely suit. Tornado's had a lot more work put into him, and he's got the addition of blinkers, so we'll be better. And Valise, he's had longer from second up to third up. We've got to run him back a bit faster, and he'll be an improver, but I'll stick with Sarah Fox.
Speaker 2Can Custom beat a handy group of mares in race number six over the 1,200?
Speaker 10If she pulls out her best, she's capable, but it's going to be hard to emulate what she ran to last start, but she's on the up, and she's drawn reasonably well, and Brownie gets along with her. So she's an each-way player, but she'll need to be at the top of her game.
Speaker 2What are you looking from Middle Earth and the Underwood Stakes?
Speaker 10Just to finish closer, I think we're right on the money with where he's at and where he needs to be at. I think he's in great form, but obviously the trip's a bit short, so he gets blinkers on. He'll be ridden where comfortable, and if we're beating less than five, that'll be a big tick.
Speaker 2You've got a host of chances in the naturalism, and some have got terrible draws. Johnny O'Neill said he's going to trifecta, the Caulfield Cup, and two of those horses are going around in the naturalism, and Saran, who was very good the other day, and also St. George, who seems to be flying. Your thoughts with your runners in the naturalism?
Speaker 10Yeah, we take a good hand, but I'd have to stick with Saran, just drawing a better barrier. The pair of them, Saran and St. George, have been galloping up together, and it's been a very nice watch just to see them come up, but St. George is sticky. I was talking to Zara yesterday. I'm not sure what he's going to do, but that's why you put him on. Yeah, OK, the Sushi, he just needs ground. He's working towards the Melbourne Cup. Piggyback, drawing well from a low draw, so that's ideal, and Kings Valley needs to gain a start, but he's drawing poor. So, yeah, we've got a mixed bag in that race.
Speaker 2Jeez, you want her to be on Warnie a long way out in the Chautauqua?
Speaker 10For sure, yeah. Good speed from Tennessee Bound, who's currently in emergency, but, yeah, he's a horse that thrives. He's got pace and pressure, and it's a quick turnaround, and he's got 55, but he's obviously in good form, so it's a great opportunity for a group on race.
Speaker 2Even that was like, what, Sunday, Monday, three or four days later, since, obviously, he was meant to be running on that Saturday. Does that have an impact with a horse like that?
Speaker 10For him, it doesn't. If you had a horse that felt the run or, you know, like a prior to Jenny who puts 110% in, you'd probably run, run back a bit flat, or you just don't go there. But for a horse like Warnie, he thrives, he bounces out of these events, and it's just an ideal setup for him.
Speaker 2Would it surprise you if Tennessee Bound won a Sir Rupert Clark Stakes if she does get a run?
Speaker 10No, it wouldn't, only because of the weight. And if Caulfield's playing Caulfield, then she could be in front, do it away, and hold on. Because she's in good form, and it's obviously a big, big task. But, you know, I hope she gets an opportunity to put her hand up, because she deserves to at the weight she'll be given.
Speaker 2His fundamental nature, is she in Melbourne or Sydney on Saturday?
Speaker 10She has just arrived at Crown Lodge in Sydney for that race up there.
Speaker 2Yeah, beautiful. So, Dad and Dave and Jenny's meadow represent your stable then in the last.
Speaker 10Yeah, that's right. So, they'll be, unfortunately, second half from wide draws. Two individuals that'll step up and trip very quickly. But, they'll be finding the line, no doubt.
Speaker 2All right, then we go to Sydney. Rock Empire's, in each way, prized fourth up this campaign.
Speaker 10Yeah, hard fit, drawn a touch awkward, but will no doubt break, go forward, and hopefully improve off his last start.
Speaker 2And Sydney does look a lovely option for fundamental nature. Clears second pick. In fact, she's equal favourite now with Bet365.
Speaker 10It's ideal. And with the program that's upcoming for her, she can string two or three. So, yeah, she's a talented mare. She was very close last start. She just missed a kick, but all reports is that she's travelled up there well.
Speaker 2Who's your best chance in the Kingston Town Stakes?
Speaker 10That's a great question. I mean, depending where we go, piggyback, mostly followed by the Monaco or Jujo, I would say.
Speaker 2Yeah, just piggyback. What's your gut feel? Does she stay in Sydney?
Speaker 10I'd say south. She'll come south. Okay. Yeah. We'll have a chat with the team and then everyone else. But good options to have when you draw them one and six. Yep.
Speaker 2Gringotts. Now, Nash Ruella, I don't know if this is a good push or not. Lucky, you would have had an opportunity to ride Lindemann in Melbourne as well. And obviously, it was nominated for that race in Sydney. But he sticks with Gringotts. He must be flying at the moment.
Speaker 10They are very confident, and so they should be. I mean, we are trying to slay a giant up there. But horses. In great order. And we saw that from his return. So, he was devising a few plans after his last gallop. So, I'm not sure which way he's going to go with how he rides him. But we're very confident in our horse. Although, yeah, we've got a big task ahead of us. I'm sure he'll run very well.
Speaker 2It's going to be intriguing from a tactical perspective, isn't it, this race? Like, there's no leader at all. So, I wonder what Nash will do. It will be fascinating.
Speaker 10Yeah. I think it is. I mean, how he was approaching the race was intriguing in itself. Yes. Can you give us an insider?
Speaker 2We can't have that just yet. We'll have to wait and see. We might sit on that for a moment.

Physically he's okay, he's a bit soft in condition and with that we've... been a bit tougher on him and he had a good stretch behind jimmy they ran some freakish splits and sectionals and he's pulled up very well so um we feel he's back to where we need him to be dane hill first up and then you've got that nice month between into a cool more so i

Speaker 11affair i reckon on saturday it will be for sure i mean those small fields you um yeah you hope that someone makes a bit of tempo because they can turn into terrible races if you don't get a With our mare, she needs speed. We saw that when she won the group one, the quicker they went, the better. She's a mare that has to sort of settle and get it right the first half, so we probably can't do much to help the other mare. But anyway, she's going very well, and hopefully set her up to go maybe to the Epsom after this.
Speaker 2So some people say then, and you can explain this to our listeners and the punters out there, like if there's no speed in a horse like Ida Fly that needs speed, then why don't you make the pace? But it just doesn't work like that, does it?
Speaker 11Yeah, it doesn't. Some horses can adapt and they can control their speed and they can just do it within themselves easily. She's just one that will just go exactly the other way. She'll go flat out and just burn herself up. She hasn't quite got that. She's just a little bit highly strung and she wants to compete the whole way through the race. So you've got to try and harness that energy, get her to... have that good finish. So, yeah, unfortunately, she's not one that can do it. Top and bottom, but, yeah. They get better as they get older, generally.
Speaker 2What mark did you give her last start?
Speaker 11Look, I was sort of fairly conservative in that she was coming out of... You know, she'd been racing basically mare straight. She was into open company the other day. And it was, you know, like a horse like Hedley Grange, she's competed at many group ones through last preparation. She's a very solid horse at that level. Like, I thought those sort of horses at that trip would probably beat her. But I was hoping that, you know, maybe if they overdid it up front, she might be able to get home and run a strong race from the back. But she's ended up sort of a bit close in the run. And the speed was genuine. And so it just didn't fall her way. But she was, again, some good horses. I thought it was a pass. She's definitely better at a mile. We know that. So, look, I'm happy with her. And all that's been good at home. So, I think we're going in the right direction. It's just a matter of getting in the right race now. And, of course, at this level, there's nowhere to hide. Once you're running in group twos and group ones, you know, they're very competitive races.
Speaker 2So, is her program after this, the Epsom and then probably the Empire Rose, is that what you're thinking?
Speaker 11Exactly. That's right. I'd say that's the way we'll end up going. We've got the Hill States also there in the back of our mind and maybe Cox Plate. Probably, I think the around-the-mile is... She's very good at the around-the-mile. I think once she gets this run under her belt, she'll be cherry ripe to go to the Epsom.
Speaker 2Headwall, he was very good first up. Was that more of a relief to see what he did there after nearly, well, a year off, basically?
Speaker 11Oh, 100%. Like, you know, you can do whatever you like at home and you can get prepared. You know, you've got to get prepared as best you can to go to those good races. But you just never know when they've been off that amount of time. He was a bit hot in the paddock, which is not unusual for him. To be sweating up. But he doesn't sweat up like that normally. So, I guess I was a little bit concerned. But, look, he put it together. He was really good. Like, he's just ready to go, the horse. I think, you know, if he can back that run up, if he can produce that run again on Saturday, he's going to be hard to beat.
Speaker 2Yeah. Do you think he can?
Speaker 11Oh, yeah, I think he can for sure. Yeah. He's just, like, he's one of those horses that, you know, because of his pattern of racing, he is... He's not the punter. Because he seems to, you know, he gets back and he finds trouble. But that's his pattern. And, look, one of these days, he's going to get a clear run. He's going to get that lovely run that, you know, a dream run. And he's just going to go bang, I'd say. But, you know, he's just frustrating a bit because he gets back and he's in these big fields. He's always looking for a gap.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 11But he's definitely got the motor.
Speaker 2Now, Matty, we had a chat to Henry Field the other day. He gave you a call with Connections and he couldn't get the deal done. He wanted you for the new gate slot there for the Everest. Yeah. The deal is you're the most popular man going around. Your phone has to stop ringing. You just got to pick who you want to go with, who you want to take to the dance, the big dance. Have you made up your mind yet, Matty?
Speaker 11No, it's just a matter of getting the right deal. Yeah, yes. You know, it's hard to get into these races. You know, you've just got to make the most of, I guess, you know, for the owners. And, you know, it's a long haul, isn't it, to get to this race. And, yeah, look, I'm hoping that he runs well Saturday. And we get a deal done. And when we get to the Everest, that's where we want to be.
Speaker 2Yeah. It's a difficult year. I reckon because the dominance of carrying rising and and I think everyone has come to the conclusion if he turns up at his best and he gets a dry track um he's going to be mighty hard to beat like he's a dollar fifty and he's still in Hong Kong like I think that says it all so from a negotiation point of view um I guess it's different this year compared the other years because you're looking for better deals if you finish second and third um I don't know how it works but is it
Speaker 11different compared to previous years oh it is it is look I think everyone's like most people are fairly reasonable about yeah what they want to get out of it I don't think anyone's asking for anything that's not fair I I do think it's different because carrying rising obviously dominated the market um if he turns up you know he's going to be hard to beat uh he's got to get here he's got to travel everything's got to go right I guess we're on our home home track so to speak yeah so um yeah look I mean I guess you can overthink it but just try and keep it simple you know everyone's happy for but in previous years I think there was you know a lot more 50 50 going on and yeah and things like that all the way down and and uh because it was so open I think people prepared to you know take those deals but now I think the slot holders are getting a bit concerned they just want to get their money back so yeah which is fair enough too I mean keep the race going year after year
Speaker 2it's a great race if I'm a slot holder then and like and we've all got money these slot holders if you've got head ball just say all right we'll just give you the slot we're going to get 700 if you run last just give us the money if you run last and then you can have the slot and see how

Speaker 13happening no it is that and uh I'm not sure if they give out uh Purple Hearts to um four hours to a soldier into a little bit of a cold which I picked up at the NFL game but okay yeah I'm I'm fitting that bill and I you know I think I think they should um yes But I also understand, you know, courage comes in many forms.
Speaker 2How do you get rid of your cold? Do you go to a sauna? Do you fast and just drink water? How do you go about it? Obviously, do you stop working out?
Speaker 13No, no, no. But high-intensity stuff comes back a notch. Let the body do its thing, mate. Sleep and hydration are still king in a world of sport science.
Speaker 2Yes. How long have you had it for now? Are you getting over it or is it just at the half-time mark?
Speaker 13It's hard to tell, isn't it? Because, you know, when you're this robust and this courageous, you know, I want to be a lion. But, you know, with soldiers, it's like the perfect storm. But we're getting through, mate, in all seriousness. You're right. It's a fabulous day's racing. And we've got a mix of weight for age and handicap racing. We know handicap racing in Australia is the envy of many around the world.
Speaker 2How do you think these tracks will play, Caulfield and Randwick, this weekend?
Speaker 13Well, seven metres, Caulfield, four metres spot latest. It was an odd sort of day, wasn't it? It's like watching the Formula One. For most races, not much changed. In most races, there are a couple of... When the distances got longer, they were able to run on. So it's really weird sort of stuff. So, you know, yeah, that's been the last couple here. Prior to that, you were certainly running on out wider. So not much wind about Saturday. So that tends to be a factor, apparently. So we'll see how we go. Sydney, don't know either. Rail six, three metres spot latest. Track played well off Hardingside. We'll all take that, I reckon. Last time we had a six metre spot, though. It was up and in. So, let's see.

Speaker 13Well, we don't have a Morale. She's an elbow this week. But we don't have to cop that sort of price. So, I found it a little bit harder this week to label a best in both states given... I'm just really a little unsure of track patterns, which is so important in the modern world. You know, we do our job. So, hopefully, we get a level playing field anyway. Long-winded answer. Race 6, number 10, bridal waltz. No answer to the winner fresh, but look, she was clear second best and had War Machine behind her. I don't think I'll be potting a live another day for the rest of my life off one fail up the straight to pop that form. What I will go back and look at is the fact this girl, bridal waltz, is the best in the race. She's the best in the race. She's the best. She's the best. She's the best. She's the best. She's the best. She's the best. She's the best. She's the best. She's the best. She's the best. She's the best. She's the best. She's the best. She's the best. She's the best. She's the best. Speaker 2I don't know. Ryder Waltz, the best bet of the day, race six, number 10, at Caulfield on Saturday. The long division race, the race that it took the coach a little while to work out, and it's in Sydney. It's the Aramond Park Shorts for the sprinters, most of them trying to get to an Everest. Headwall's the favorite at 340. Jolly Star at 380. She is back from that campaign in Europe where she finished third at Royal Ascot. Ninja at $5 with bet 365. And then we go to King's Secret at $12. Jokers grins the intriguing horse. He wasn't going to run, and now he's going to run. He had a foot abscess that gave him a temperature, and it looks like they've got over that problem. They'll get his blood back in the next 24 hours, and that'll decide whether he takes his place. The Boom WA Spritter. Marzu at $13. Mahuna at $13. And then the Queenslander, he's been trialing nicely, Graft the Burners at $21. And then, of course, we've got the Group 1 winner, the Stradbroke champ, Spicy Martini. At $23 here, Gator.
Speaker 13Yeah, what a race. But I don't know who's going to win it. Hence, I made it the long division. I mean, I can make a fabulous case for these horses, but I won't really know until after the race. What I do think, and the reason I've tipped Ninja on top, is because he seems to be heading north with his profile. He was excellent. He was excellent. He was excellent. He was excellent winning first up. He's trialled brilliantly either side of that. I think he's absolutely a Group 1 talent. He's in the conversation for Tad for an Everest slot. I know he's being taken. The challenge for him, he's doing it each and every time. I think he's got some challenges between the ears, and he's a great coach. He's got a great trainer. So, I'm happy to tip him at the price. It's interesting. I'm not always price-driven, but he came up $250 in Jolly Star. Six bars. He'd probably go the other way.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 13But because of these reasons that I think he's still heading north on the upward trajectory and can measure right up, all of a sudden you're getting the price you might not get if he reaches those lofty targets that we think he can reach. Does that make sense? Yeah, 100%. Yeah. So, that's my reason.
Speaker 2If you're picking a footballer, say, on your footy team, you've probably got the proven performers like a Jolly Star and even a Headwall. He's probably a little bit different. But... Ninja's one of the star junior players that kick four or five goals and he's seen you to boo, and you think that he can be a genuine A-grader.
Speaker 13Yeah, it's a good analogy because those young players, every time they step up, they seem to measure up, and they're the ones that you can really land on and trust. Headwall and Jolly Star have proven it at the highest level. And I just... I just don't know that they're getting any better. So, I'd be surprised if they are. They're both still fabulous and proper Group 1 horses. So, Jolly Star, of course, won this last year. She had a torrid run and still beat them. Headwall chased Jolly Star in a new market. She was better than him.
Speaker 5Yeah.
Speaker 13And she meets him better at the weights here. She's the best suited at the weight. And Headwall, of course, pipped by Joker's Grin. So, it all ties in, in the cocker. Joker's Grin's a fascinating runner. He's trialling about as well as Ninja. But this temperature spike thing, I remember going into a half Ironman off a temperature spike setback. I thought I was right, but I was not and underperformed. It seems to happen to equine athletes a little bit, but not to all of them. So, it all affects them differently, right?
Speaker 2It did happen to Baywack.
Speaker 13Yeah, and it's happened to many, you know. And some go through it like a brick wall, but others, more... More often than not, in my empirical evidence, it tends to take them a run. That's what I'm thinking anyway.
Speaker 2I think Chris Waller's been excellent with the information that he's provided us. And it sounds like it's different to a virus. It's more that foot abscess that caused the temperature. Now, I'm no vet, but that's what it sounds like to me when you read the explanation from Chris Waller. So, he'll get his bloods back today, I think. And if he's right to go, he'll be there. They tell me he was flying, Joker's Grin. The trials were telling you that. Yeah, yeah. And he still came from last to beat a good field that day in a quokka. So, obviously, he's got the ability. And I think everyone in WA has been looking forward to seeing him have a crack in the Eastern States. And hopefully, we get to see that on Saturday. I reckon Smooth Chino, I know this is getting off topic a little bit, but he was mighty first up in that race in Adelaide on Saturday with 62 on his back. So, I think these WA sprinters might measure. But we'll see how they go. We'll see how he goes on Saturday if he does take his place. Headwall, has the tab been talking to Matty Smith? Gator, can you let us into any of the secrets there?
Speaker 13Look, earlier in the week, we had a chat about Headwall. And so, I think that's definitely at least partially on the radar for those with much more say than me to at least make a phone call. Yeah. Because I get a feeling that they're leaning towards an up-and-coming three-year-old. It's probably the preference. But we'll know more, hopefully, after this weekend. Yeah.

Speaker 13horse here where are we heading all righty race three And at Randwick, there's a horse called Victoria Spirit who I tipped first up off a really good trial and I was nervous about a wet track. I don't think he handled it at all. Plus, it was that day at Caulfield where he landed any spot and finished any spot like every other horse on the day. It was great stuff. But I just think back on dry ground, you know, this is a recipe I like to use. So if I see a horse that's trialled really well and then has a genuine excuse first up and sometimes again second up and then things do pan out, well, all of a sudden you're getting a really good price for a good horse. So I think he can run really well. There are a couple of dual acceptors there that are really key to that race, though, in the market.
Speaker 2Yeah. And there's a few text messages coming through regarding the Newcastle dual noms. They won't make their decision until later this afternoon or tomorrow. And I know it's frustrating for all of us punters. And the interstate dual noms, we get to find out today, but... I guess if you own a horse and you're paying whatever you're paying a month, Gator, and you are wanting the trainer to make the best decision so you can earn some prize money, I can understand that. I know it's frustrating for us punters, but if I owned a horse, say Mr. Miller, for instance, and he needs to win, he needs to win to get into an Epson, then you're waiting to the last minute to work out what horses are going where. I reckon, anyway. That's just... And I can understand that the punters need to be put first. But I think there's an argument for both sides. And I'm getting a host of text messages coming through. But it's a big business these days. And if you're a trainer, you can understand if they're playing within the rules, then you make your decision as late as possible, Gator, I reckon.
Speaker 13Anyway. No, look, it's a valid argument. It's worth debating. I guess to offset that, the other thing you've just said is if we mandate a time, then everyone will know where everyone's running. Correct. Earlier. So maybe that's the answer.
Speaker 2And I think that is the answer. So if the PRAs are getting complaints by the punters who do fund the industry,

But, yeah, I think, Cosmic Crusader, if he's within four lengths, he's going to look the winner at some point. Yes. Who are you tipping in the Underwood? I'm happy with Cosmic Crusader. He's been to 1800 once.

Speaker 13He did it doing what he's doing here, 14 to 1800. He charged home and he had a horse called Apulia safely held behind him. That horse was then, you know, had been really competitive with Birdman in a blame. He hadn't he? So, look, it's not always that easy. You know, and I think Lindemann is a danger, especially if we get a Grand Prix day.

Speaker 13Then Lindemann, they won't run past him. So, track pattern's going to be king for my betting strategy into that. They can only tip one on top and that horse will be Cosmic Crusader.

You can boost her to $5.50. Regal Awards, $7. Angel Capital, $8. Evaporate, $8.50. Warnie at $10. Seppels at $11. Cliff Brown indicating that he probably will need the run. War Machine, $16. Yellow Jersey, $16. Sabaj, $19. Feroce, $20 to $1. And then Tennessee Bound, $20 to $1. Planet Red, $23. Tom Kitten, $26. Sun Gods, a progressive type at $26. Then Persian Spirit, Harry Jott. John Hawke, all at a big price. But they have ability. It's a great race.
Speaker 13No, it is that. Yeah, and, you know, there's a few, you know, at the crossroads, I think. You know, you talk about the likes of Angel Capital and, to a lesser extent, Lady Shenandoah. I take the point on Tom Kitten. I mean, you don't have the 59 unless you're a really good horse and achieve what he's achieved. He would have loved last year's tempo. 46 and change, first 800.
Speaker 5Yeah.
Speaker 13And it was fearsome. I don't think Steeples will go out that hard this time. So, yeah, look, I think the play in the race for me, or the top selection at least, is Regal Ward, who, well, I think we all agree he's an exceptional talent. But, gee, he's brought himself undone a few times, more than once. But he's trying really well, and he's jumping cleanly from the gates in the trial and that's been an issue for him. He was simply better than Skyhook when they clashed. He's just a better horse. Skyhook comes back and wins really well. I like the four-year-olds in these races. I was pretty keen on Steeples last year. And I think he can run really well. I'm surprised, pleasantly, that he's up near double-figure odds. So, Lady Shenandoah is the saver bit. Certainly a few for the quality, but I think Regal Ward can jump cleanly. I don't think they'll be able to go as hard as last year. And give a great start if the track's dry. Yeah.
Speaker 2A few people have asked, "Gate one good for Lady Shenandoah?" I'd probably prefer she not draw there if you like her, but you never know, do you, really, until you see how this track is playing on Saturday.
Speaker 13Yeah, that's going to be the key to it. Not so much her herself, but the track pattern. So, if the track's a level playing field or the inside's advantaged, all of a sudden, bang, you know, she's right in the mix. But I like the draw for her. Subject to exactly that. She can be within four or five lengths of the lead and just needs clear running at the right time.
Speaker 2Geez, just before you give your footy side the last couple of minutes, the final word, you're probably getting Regal Ward and Angel Capital by themselves just quickly for a word before they step out and say, "This could be your day." You probably deserve to be a premiership player at Group 1 level, but go and do it. Yeah, that's right.
Speaker 13You've just got to execute, right? Yeah. So, you've just got to execute. That's the basics. And then, if you're good enough, you win.

Do you back Waller's judgment? He clearly thinks a lot of Mr. Miller. Or do you put a line through those not weighted to advantage? Obviously, Jules Nomm, but if they both lined up, do you focus on weights and measures or potential?
Speaker 13That's from Ben. Yeah, it's a good question. So a really good question. So look, weights and measures are absolutely a factor. But I could list you 5 million times in the last 10 years that it has meant nothing coming race day. You know, if we're relying on mathematical ratings, you know, we'd all be millionaires, wouldn't we? Because it's just cut and dry, but it's not the reality. So absolutely, in my humble, lean towards... who you think will win, you know? So in other words, who's the one that's heading, you know, in the right trajectory. So, so often, because the handicapper hasn't caught up with them yet, you get the better price and they can overcome it. Who do you think's the better horse? Cool. I think Al Toff right now is... Look, if he can... I know he had a weight advantage, but if he can leave Attica for dead like that, and that second up win was so soft, wasn't it? Gee. So Al Toff for me, but Mr. Millers does have a bit more scope still.

Hillside she was when the winner sprinted, as a lot of them were. But once she picked up, that last 100 was really lovely work. So she gets to 1,400. Look, I think it was 1,500. I'd be keener. Is 1,400 still going to be a little bit sharp? That's my little query. But, yeah, so I'm happy to... The shortened version is she can win, she's second pick, and I'm going to back her.

Speaker 13Yeah, look, this race is subject to some really key dual acceptors. The likes of Stealth have not cruised the weight. We now know where fundamental nature's running in this race. So in saying that, Unleashing's first up run was very good. You know, held up at a key stage. Winner gave a windburn, but this horse had no momentum. Picked up and really found the line. I think... Can win. And he's top pick subject to the final field.

Speaker 2Morning, G. Firstly, after the weekend, I think Central Europe might be the new Wotan. He's just a non-winner. Time to let go. It's a difficult one around the selection table. Like, he's one of those players that you love. And you've got to argue with your fellow coaches that he should be playing centre-half forward still when they probably think, you know, I don't know. He's like the Oscar Allen in a way. He's probably a little bit better than Oscar Allen. But does he play this week or do we drop Gallup? So, I've got to give him one more chance, Central Europe. Speaker 13The rule of thumb of the Norm Smith is you've just got to pick a player who's better than the comp they're playing in. So, that's a recipe that stood the test of time for a long time. And even when, you know, the lesser likes have won it, like Isaac Smith, I think we all, a lot of us, think that Dangerfield probably should have won it. But, I mean, he was better when the heat was really on early. So, anyway, that's just an opinion. No, knock on Isaac. He's a great guy. But that's the rule for that. And, you know, it's been a great betting strategy for me, that Norm Smith thing.

Speaker 13So, if we think Frio will still win the flag, then who's the player in that comp that, if there was another league, they'd go and play really well in it. So, I'm thinking... Luke Jackson, Shea Bolton, Sirong are probably my top three.
Speaker 2I think Brisbane Hawthorne. No one really cares what I think. If whoever wins that game will win the flag. I think the Lions. I'm scared of Hawthorne. They've had that week off. Sam Mitchell is keen and Kane calling him a genius. But, jeez, we've got a lot. If we're going to be dropping Oscar Allen, that probably just sums the depth of our side. So, hopefully. Now, his record on bone dry tracks is really good and he draws better than key rivals here. So I'm happy with him on top. And if he runs to expectation, you know, and many are tipping St. George to run well in a Caulfield Cup, then hey, presto, he has a case.
Speaker 2Here we go. I've got a few more coming through. Morning, G and Gator. I simply don't see how Headwall doesn't give these windburn. Ninja is on an Everest path wide barrier. I can't see them using him up and potentially overdoing him. Jolly Star off an overseas prep. Headwall to win by two lengths minimum. There you go.
Speaker 13Yeah, that's certainly a strong opinion. I think in a really even race in my humble. The thing with Headwall is if you can argue strongly, he should have crossed the line with Tentor, who's second favourite for an Everest. Pretty easy to like, isn't he? I guess you go back and look at his form and Joker's grin's beaten him fair and square. And so is Jolly Star. So, yeah, so I think he's a key winning hope. Absolutely. Absolutely. But there's two sides to that coin.
Speaker 2David, thoughts on a Benchmark 100 at Caulfield on Saturday and can Behaviour get the job done again?
Speaker 13Yeah, I'm glad I risked that horse back to 1,000 last time and pipped us right on the line as predicted by the stable. So well done to them. Bit too good. So back to 1,100 is no negative. This is a stronger race, you know, but this horse has a weight advantage over the likes of Spirewire and Winner's Edge who have performed against, you know, group two, group three, three horses.
Speaker 2Now, Baron Gary has been bloody good to me. Do you think he's a great place Saturday? Gator, diggity dog.
Speaker 13That's from Kirsten from the Bull. Best for the day. Sydney needs a level playing field. Comes up to 16 and a half, so there are challenges. Speaker 13Look, I'm going to tip the Euphrates, who held his ground well when beating at the Chelmsford and fit a much better suited 2000. And he's much better suited this weight scale away from weight for age. So he gets that weight advantage on green spaces and co, doesn't he? And his other key rival starts in the rise, George Wide. So he's top pick, but there'll be a few for that early quaddie home. Hopefully we're alive.
Speaker 2I think I've got to chase that information regarding Mr Miller and also, of course, LTOF. I've got so many different sources. Yeah, I'll chase that up. But, hey, Gator, thoughts on Hadley Grange?
Speaker 13Yeah, well, I mean, when's the last time he ran poorly? He wouldn't even know how to do it. I don't think. He's a ripper. Now, obviously, 61 kilos is a challenge because if weight didn't mean anything, you know, science wouldn't be a real thing. So that's the challenge, the 61. But, you know, it just depends who he's competing. The combatants are, whether it's LTOF or Mr Miller, they've got to give him a lot of weight because of what he's achieved.
Speaker 2Hi, Gareth. The pun is getting a fair go with place odds. I think when markets are above 118%, bookies should be forced to offer quarter odds for place and each way bets. We had this chat with Kingsley Bartholomew there yesterday on Beyond the Barriers, Gator. Like, it is difficult when the percentages are this high. Whatever I'm trying to say, anyway. They're as high as they are these days. But, yeah, it is what it is.

But I heard Chris talk about him on your show, G, and suggest he's absolutely flying. And you referenced those trials, and he looks like he's trucking up. The latest was behind Jolie Starr. So I think we got a good guide on how she's going, how he's going. I think he's a forgotten horse in the shorts on the weekend. Hopefully turns up. His map's not too bad. There's speed on. But he's absolutely trucking along, and he's probably a forgotten horse in the sense of first up and in the sense of an Everest. So excited to see Joker. Joker's Grin back at the races.

Speaker 15Yep, Unevincible from the Smart Mare Sprite. G, I think this is the second foal out of Sprite, if my memory serves me right. Crestfield Silks. First trial, this was in a nice enough heat. Good time. I just like the way this horse sliced through the field. He did a lot of things right, G. And for your debut trial, that's always a nice sign. And good pass the post as well. Always look forward. That was 7, sorry, 816 metres. Look for a second trial now before that galloper heads to the races.
Speaker 2Cruising the stars, Scotty Collings likes this horse. And so do you, Gator. I should say Dino, number three.
Speaker 15He does. Hey, I'll take that as a compliment, G. Gator's the man, the goat. Thank you. Lightly raced four-year-old mare, G. A three from three last prep, then dipped the toe in highway grade, running fourth there in a nice enough highway. So I always like that first preparation. That's a pretty smart form line. Second prep now, impressive 750-metre trial at Goulburn last Friday. And I think this four-year-old mare cruising the stars can probably knock off a highway this time in. So look for her to return, maybe one run, and then they'll head into town to look to knock off that highway, like I mentioned.
Speaker 2Number two, Caballos, one for Bjorn Baker. We all know he's a group one winner, so he's got plenty of ability, but he's caught your eye at the trials.
Speaker 15Yeah, it's interesting, G. He's won a group one. He's run seven. Second in Expressway, group two to Jolie Starr and Lady Shenandoah. But if you think in your mind, you probably don't put him in that echelon rankings-wise, but he's shown again. He's come back in outstanding order. This was a hot heat over pass, took it out. Silph, who goes around, he raced 10 on the weekend, was in it, and she's a terrific trial. But he looked sort of a length or two better than these gallopers, so he's back in a big way. Went out to the prep running, I think, sixth there in the quokka. But I dare say, G, he's up at the right time. We could maybe see him in a premier. Would be the race he goes to, and potentially then they look for an Everest or a Sydney Stakes, or they keep him up for maybe a champion sprint at the back end of the year. But Cabalas are back in a big way. And then pin-up Sheila.
Speaker 2Three words for the O'Shane Charlton camp. He's your number one seed.
Speaker 15Yeah, correct, G. A filly that I thought we'd see sooner rather than later this spring, but they've taken their time, though, O'Shane Charlton camp. She won two from two last preparation, both in the metro grade, one on a heavy eight and one on a six. Off five. So handles all conditions. Lovely looking type. The two trials she's been beaten by, Luxa, Crescent, King G. That reads well. And the latest was Global Gold, who had the tick of a trial. The winker's on there the other day. So trial form's elite. Form from last preparation is terrific. Not sure where she ties in this spring, but she can win first up wherever she goes this preparation. She's my number one this week.

Speaker 2Hello to you, Matty. Good morning, guys. Good morning, listeners. How's things, mate? We've got your top five trials ready to go. We'll start off with the shot. Shyster, Andrew Dale prepares.
Speaker 16Yeah, the unraced three-year-old, the Shyster, has gained plenty of experience at the jump nets over the last year and has improved steadily along the way. He found his way to Cranbourne for the latest pair, including a good effort on the all-weather, followed by a very smart performance on Monday. Was one of the best away before moving through smoothly on the inside. And once given half an inch of rain on the turn, the Shyster scooted away under no pressure at all. Ran about eight links quicker than the heat that, Jimmy Starr, won in the process. And Jimmy's heat had a very hot tempo up front, set by a couple of good pacemakers. So the Shyster's down to a debut at Chuka on Saturday. And that's a course that probably suits this galloper if the race doesn't come too soon after his effort on Monday.
Speaker 2Okay, and then you've got pocket full of cash. This is a progressive type for Rhys Goodwin.
Speaker 16Yeah, once race with a pocket full of cash, he showed plenty of dash on debut for a soft win on the all-weather, where the track had packed him. You know, he might not have beaten much, but there was a subsequent winner in group three, fourth place getter, Phillip Island, well in his wake. Phillip Island was a bit slow away that day, but pocket full of cash had him well covered. Returned to the trials on Monday, pocket full of cash after a brief layoff and was happy to sit off a good leader and care to pass him without any real question being asked. From the saddle, it was a nice looking return and the race course won't be too far away.
Speaker 2And then you've got Jarbadar, number three for the McAvoys.
Speaker 16He's an interesting one. Twice race three-year-old Gelding Jarbadar made light work of an ordinary bunch of maidens on debut before facing the stiff task set by Natural Fling next time out. Stuck to his guns manfully there and beat the rest clearly in second place. And since, interestingly, joined the McAvoys stable, so he's the stable made of Natural Fling there. And on reappearance was eye-catching when scouting the outside rail under a very strong grip, for a soft second. Returned on Friday and again scattered wide when hauled back to the rear early on. most relaxed cantilling along with his head on his chest before letting down very oppressively without exerting himself at all for a decisive victory a return to racing is now on the cards and uh jarbada looks to have a significant leeway off the market 64 so he's a very promising recruit
Speaker 2for the mackinac team we're all looking forward to seeing concord connie back at the races for charlotte littlefield she makes your top five as number two yeah i've always been a big fan of
Speaker 16connie she really hit her straps last campaign and looks to go on with the job this spring was slowly away with a good second to gallant sun first time out and gallant sun signed up with a nice trial the other day uh stepped out on tuesday connie uh went uh much better from the gates uh she's happy to take a lead before pushing up the inside and kicking clear in the runs of the line with a handy enough ex-hong kong rated agent galloper in her wake um connie looks on the other side of the line and she's on the other side of the line and she's on the other side all set for an action-packed spring and will be hard to hold out as she continues to progress
Speaker 2through the grades and then number one cavill avenue for lindsey park and team hayes yeah once
Speaker 16raised cavill avenue would have been a good thing beaten if unable to overcome a less than clear passage and solid buffeting on debut she probably bumped into two or three horses there as she tried to get through as it was she proved too strong and took care of a very handy nick ryan philly in the next start at flemington and going up to queensland and running fourth in the size there uh she's given a quiet time last week when returning but was conspicuous late when finishing on the hills of ray bagnerio who was third that day at packingham uh jumped well on tuesday but was happy to take a sit on the outside of the leader about a leg and a half back cruised up without any animation from the set of what's our soft wind on the line while the uh 76 rated leader was pushed right out which was a very good thing for the team and i think that's a very good thing for the team and i think that's a very good thing for the team and i think that's a stable mate um cavill avenue looks to have plenty of scope to build on it won't start with and look for her to return soon and be very hard

Speaker 17october so less than a month away now yeah so it's ramping up i live right by the cambridge track here in the waikato so i've got front row seats to how this influx of two-year-olds uh comes about uh down here and they're just rolling in you see those familiar regal farm riversley park um all of them just bringing these these youngsters in to educate in advance of the breeze ups the same is happening over in mata mata right now and also elsewhere in smaller doses um so yes 12th and 13th of october is when they'll breathe all at tarapa on the same grass surface um and we'll film them and time them and whatnot so people have a really nice amount of time um just over a month to really have a look at them before they go under the hammer at karaka in november
Speaker 2and we get all the information that you need really these days and
Speaker 17today's world for sure we time them we film them but we also give them all of those background details as well what sort of surface they were running on what the conditions were on the day weather-wise um we give the the potential buyer as much information as we can just to to take any of the mystery out of it really you know you buy a yearling and you have to do your guesswork off what it looks like what it's what its pedigree page tells you and uh and how it walks yeah but with this these this two-year-old sale and with nzb in particular you know we give you very comparable conditions for these 462 year olds and uh you can have a really good look at them and see what their action would be and uh you know we all the big races um are on a turf surface and that's why we insist on on breezing them up on that uh regardless of uh the the circumstance at the time
Speaker 2weather-wise and whatnot yeah and all the big um all the big stallions are represented especially from a new zealand perspective prazer savabill perencanto um sham express the sigh of kane rising you've got a frankel a two darn hot street boss hell bent um torrenato which is um of course the pride and joy of victoria at the moment he's our leading stallion here in home affairs so um there's some big stallions that are represented and it looks like it's going to be
Speaker 17another terrific catalog as well yeah it has the makings of a ripper of a sale the stallions that's the most stallions we've had in a ready to run sale so we're looking at 119 uh the progeny of 119 different stallions represented in this book um huge representation from australasian uh the big guns but also uh up and coming uh stallions as well and certainly the new zealand stallion ranks aren't uh going anywhere there's new additions all the time and we see that too so there's real depth um there's a huge amount of black type on the pages and i know i've mentioned this last year and it's the same again this year book one pedigrees are here um and book one types as well these horses are very much geared to this market our vendors are meeting by demand so every year it's just it builds on itself you need the sale does not take a step back and we're super proud of uh of the book that we can offer this year

Speaker 18G'day Gareth, yeah certainly some drama this morning at harness racing Victoria, a changing of the guard
Speaker 2in place, so what has happened
Speaker 18well chief executive Matt Isaacs who joined us only a couple of days ago, has announced that he won't be continuing on and what I mean by that is he's been on a contract, that contract was up for renewal and he has decided that he's done his time at harness racing Victoria and he will be finishing up in well next month some stage so so look this is it's interesting timing I have spoken to Matt briefly, really briefly about this he just feels that he's done what he set out to do so so look it's going to be an interesting almost four years to look back on Gareth because you know he's had to make some hard decisions, he probably hasn't won a lot of friends in his time there but he inherited a financial mess, so in 2023 harness racing Victoria had a forecast loss of $34 million that was surviving in a false economy funded by government support, that government support dried up, they've had to make some really big decisions in cost cutting, managing prize money which has been incredibly difficult for the participants but financially as a body harness racing Victoria is on target to return a $1 million profit so on face value that's a $35 million turnaround part costs, you know part getting extra income into the industry but you know he leaves at a time where the industry is on a nice edge and I don't think that's overrating it because participants are really struggling prize money is struggling we're unclear on the future of Melton and in his own words from a couple of days ago with us there's never been a more important piece on the chess table for harness racing in this state than what happens with the future of harness racing so we'll talk a lot more about this Gareth, a lot more details will come out Matt did say that he would be available to come on with you in the next couple of weeks when I spoke to him earlier on today I guess I my opinion is now is time for unity in a sport that can be very divided Gareth so I think there's a lot of challenges but it's really time for the industry to unite and try and find the best way forward and I guess more broadly on a national level it's an interesting time for CEOs isn't it with the RQ job in the market, Rawa's job in the market and now HRV in the market as well so you know there's some really meaty roles in Australian racing up for grabs at the
Speaker 2moment. So he's resigned basically you could have told us on Tuesday when we had a chat to him but I understand there was a few things that he was trying to work all out to work out but it sounds like listening to you that he's just he's exhausted basically he's had
Speaker 18enough. Yeah look I mean he hasn't said that in his own words but I mean it hasn't been a fun even when you're the person making the decisions he's not going to look back and say gee that was a fun four years he might say it was rewarding the finances around but it's been
Speaker 2we just lost Adam there we'll try and get him back. You there mate?
Speaker 18I'm here now mate I'm here sorry I've just dropped out briefly but yeah I was going to say I mean he's not going to look back and say gee I absolutely loved that four years because he's had to make some really difficult decisions but but I guess he'll look back on it and say I had the charter to turn the industry around financially and I've been able to do that so I think what happens in the next five years is absolutely not even five years probably two to three years is is critical for what the future of harness racing looks like in this state Gareth so whoever takes the reins is going to have an enormous job. And who will that be Adam? Oh I've got no idea honestly I've got no idea the COO Glenn Lee who both you and I know well is in an acting role until they work through the process I have no idea whether Glenn would be interested in the role you know in a full time capacity I guess we'll learn that over time but whoever takes the role is going to be moving into the most critical two to three years in the history of the sport in this state and that's not overstating
Speaker 2things. Is there a chance that Bernard Saundry who's the chairman could be an executive chair?
Speaker 18As in Boyd by what Peter Volandis is doing at the NRL. Well look I mean anything's possible isn't it? I mean Bernard is a previous CEO at Harness Racing Victoria albeit you know probably 20-25 years ago but yeah I guess anything is possible at the moment Gareth.
Speaker 2Interesting times mate so yeah we'll get Matty Isaacs on in the next week or so it'll be an interesting conversation to have I reckon so when he joins us I'm looking forward to it. Yeah well I
Speaker 18would love to know what he thinks you know we talk about Melton and that's number one but what are the other biggest issues or the biggest must wins for the sport to have a viable future in Victoria Gareth? Yeah and
Speaker 2you know what like when you have a look at his time at HRV he had to make some tough decisions like they were I don't know it's just like telling someone that you can't be like you you're spending far too much than you're making and that is difficult really that is really difficult to tell these hard working participants that are already doing it tough that their prize money was going to be slashed because they couldn't afford to continue to do what they were doing.
Speaker 18Yeah and the participants will argue we haven't you know we're doing what we've done for 30 years so what you know what can we do differently but the bottom line is harness racing is effectively just a company and a company can only spend what it earns and harness racing as an industry has been earning basically you know less and less over about the past 20 years in Victoria. Yeah and this
Speaker 2mountain sale is all important when you have a look at the books and you listen to the people that know and you read the report so yeah it's a very important job.
Speaker 18If harness racing doesn't get the right outcome out of Melton it's I can't see it continuing as a professional industry in Victoria and people might find that alarmist but I just think that's a simple fact. If there's not a nest egg to invest and shape the future of the sport around then it's just going to be yeah we're just going to descend closer and closer to where South Australia has become.

Speaker 19Yeah, we're going to go, well, firstly, I want to just raise your attention to this dog. Now, I copped some flack over it, over the Cushion. A few straight, getting beat a week or two ago. Now, I'm just telling you it's in. Race two, number four, tailored. It's second favorite. It's on the drift. It was a huge run on Monday night, the quick backup. I'm not saying I have a bet, but... What are you saying then, Mitchie?
Speaker 2What are you saying then, brother? What are you saying?
Speaker 19Well, you know as much as I do, G, that how often do you tip something as a best bet one week, and then it comes out and wins the next start when you don't have a cent on. So all I'm saying is it is in today. I'm just highlighting it for the punters, that if it gets out to $5,000, $5,000 or $6,000, it can be worth an each-way play. At the moment, around $420,000, probably not so much a play. They're back to $3,000, and they're pretty confident on it, I reckon. So race two, number four, cue straight, is that one I gave the other day.
Speaker 2Are you scared of Major's story then? Like, what do you know about this?
Speaker 19Well, they are a punting kennel, and when they back dogs, they usually go really well. So, yeah, when I see money around for debutants, I somewhat get a little bit excited if I'm with them, and if I'm against them, it can make you shake just a little bit. But I want to go to cue two. Cue two is my venue where I seem to have the best strike rate. Now, race six, number four, Ideas Girl, actually beat Roma Keeping last week. I liked Roma off the red. It's off the red again. But Ideas Girl just looks to be, well, not the overs, but the dog that wins, to be honest. $2.20 or thereabouts, its second favorite. It beat Roma Keeping last time, that convincingly four-and-a-half lengths. There's no speed inside to hold it out. Even if it idles up next to Roma Keeping, I still think it wins again. So race six, number four, get to the best, which is, race eight, number one, and that is Delghetti. That is New Zealand-type flu two starts ago. Drew Paul last time out in seven. Gets back down to the fence where it needs to be. It's quite short, but you can have the same racer with the two, which is Zipping Alcaraz. So I think race eight, number one, is the best. Just include that in your multis. And then go to the lucky last, race 10, number two, Imperial Audrey. Looks to have the speed to lead here. It's got a wide runner in one who's a slow beginner, wide runner in three, Red Dirt Road, who's got no pace. If the one pushes off, we can still hold. Our line and get pushed off with it and then still be too good. So I think the Red is sickening unders. Race 10, number two, at around that 4.20 quote, is an absolute steal, G-Man.
Speaker 2So $4 Imperial Audrey to take on great terms is $1.35. That's unbelievable.
Speaker 19It's desperate to get off the track, the Red, and I don't think it's got any speed. It can miss the kick and it can hook wide, and we should have plenty of room up the fence with two wide runners drawn either side of us. I think we've got the speed to lead both of them. So we could have a runway up. The inside.
Speaker 2So what we hope there is that Imperial Audrey goes to the inside, great terms goes off and then crashes into a few and gets into trouble and we're off and gone.
Speaker 19Yeah, I think we should lead it anyway. So we just don't want to step with it. We either step, we beat it out and we get to the fence or we miss the kick and we get to the fence and then it pushes off and we have plenty of room up the inside. Just don't want to step with it and get pushed off.
Speaker 2All right, then. Let's hope it just knows what it's doing, Imperial, then. We'll get the chocolates at $4.

Look, Thompsons last year, when they teamed up with David Burke Constructions, they picked that dog really late and it got up and won. So, look, you can go a long way out and a lot can happen in the space of, well, weeks, let alone months. So, I'd be waiting. I'd be keeping the powder dry. But, you know, you've got plenty of good analysts there, especially Troy Little. I'd be picking his brains as much as you can. He was close with Amron Boy.
Speaker 2Not close enough, but that was disappointing from Troy. He needs to lift really.
Speaker 19Well, he was a certainty beaten and, geez, didn't I cop it out there with him? When I tipped against it. But, anyway, that's the way the racing industry goes. And, you know what, gee, if you're in it, we can win it.
Speaker 2You've got to choose a team. You've got to be with us, even though if you thought that we had no idea, Mitchie.
Speaker 19Well, I'm also a part of the blue team, so it makes it hard to add a bit of... Yeah, that's a sports bet.

Speaker 19We've got a practice game coming up this week. First game starts in a couple of weeks and get stuck right into it. So, we're stuck at the moment. A bit of a delay with POMS. There's obviously issues with the visas being approved with the coming into the country. So, I think clubs all around Victoria and Australia are impacted. Okay, there you go. Speaker 20Yeah, Sandown Park is where we'll start race eight, number seven, Paul Levisa. Really good battle with Esquire, especially early. Both of these greyhounds have had really nice 600-metre careers, stepped up to 700 metres and have raced well there, but back over the 600. I think that early speed battle will be interesting, but Paul Levisa, I think he's just racing slightly. I think he'll do better, and I think it will be hard to beat. The other one, race nine, number one, Ivory Inzai, $3 into $1.90. They've sort of taken our price here, Gareth, but to win last start was very, very good. Certainly wants to be closer to the fence, and I can't see why it shouldn't go back-to-back. And the other one we thought was a bit of value, and it's actually come up that way, is race 11, number one, Gold Code. Now, it's a really good race, Gareth. There's some very, very good female chasers in this race, but Gold Code off box one, she's a bit of a talent, especially over 600 metres. So she'll get to the line okay. She's drawing where she's going. She wants to be. And we're shopping around $7. So I just suggest the punters certainly to play each way there. So it's Sandown, race nine, number seven, race nine, number one, race 11, number one, Q2 Parklands. This greyhound from New Zealand, Dalgety, $29.35. I think puts him in the top 10 or 12 times of the year for the 520 metres, and one's inside. We're going to take it in a double with race nine, number four, Zipping Urban, and both of those. So we're shopping around the $3.00. $3.90 mark for both of those to win. I think they'll both be fairly hard to beat.
Speaker 2What about Imperial Order in the last? You're with Mitchie there.
Speaker 20Yeah, that's with Great Terms in the race. Yeah, Great Terms is one of those greyhounds that you don't want him sitting on your hammer. He's a greyhound that gets the line very hard. So you'll know a lot more after that first corner, that's for sure. So we need to be in front. Oh, absolutely. Now, Great Terms, he's probably one of the top 10 there in run, homes for sure at Q2. So you've got to be careful with that. How many lengths do we need to be in front by, Georgie? Oh, you need to be a fair few in front of Great Terms, especially if he's racing really well at the moment, Great Terms. That's for sure. The other interesting runner was that greyhound that Jason Thompson mentioned to you at the start of the show yesterday, which is about $1.80, I think, in the first race at Sandown Park, Garrett. So watch out for it because it's only had a handful of starts and it looks like it's gone. It's got some sort of ability. I'm just getting its name up for you now. That is Going Nuclear, $1.50, around $1.55 now. As I said, it only had the three starts for two wins and that last start at Sandown coming 29.32. So we talk about Phoenix and young greyhounds and all these greyhounds are going to start to be named, especially if they come out and run your 29.20s and 29.10s at Sandown Park in the next week or so.
Speaker 2What a dog that is, Kiwi Birchip. So what's the Kiwi dogs? Is that, is that, I haven't, like there's obviously there's going to be a lot of Kiwi dogs going around these days.
Speaker 20Yeah, they're not, they're not Kiwi dogs though. They're out of a female called La La Kiwi. This is Joshi Furmosa and Corey Lee's Heinrichs greyhounds. They've got, I just did an article coming up. If you have a look and punters can keep aware of this, they've got a lot of greyhounds coming through. They're good 500 metre dogs, but you wait till they step up over 600. They've got a really good team of strong young greyhounds. They're going to have a lot of fun in the next six to 12 months with some of these. So there's that special one, Garrett, that's 44. kilos his name is kiwi hank uh but he seems to be just struggling at the at the minute but uh he's he's one that's uh got a cult following at the moment good on you mate thanks for that georgie

Speaker 21universal ruler yeah he was he was he obviously only won a maiden but yeah he couldn't have been more impressive he he sort of had to do a bit of work he couldn't fight cross um got stuck in the breeze and he was in fun on straightening a horse on debut that's a pretty daunting task but he really ran away from them and won with authority so he stepped straight from a maiden into graduation company which um you know is never easy but i think one lesson i've learned in probably the last 18 months is if you think they are going to be horses you're better off throwing them straight in the deep end because rating point wise winning the race crucifies you when you get to saturday so yeah that's why he um goes straight into a sat day and i couldn't be happier with him he's a three-year-old against the older horses but um yeah i think he's he's pretty progressive what do you do from that gate uh he's got good tactical speed so he'd roll forward find a spot somewhere on speed and um yeah no weight on his back that

Speaker 22yeah it's a good one uh the weather will be perfect we have no issues with the track or the way it'll play uh the rails back in the true position they headed out of fairway last saturday at the gold coast but it's just a great weekend of racing up here man it's all sea of pink everyone will be dressed to the nines at the gold coast in pink and it continues on sunday we have a pink ribbon race day at the sunshine coast as well so it's a great cause as we know and everyone needs to get behind as much as they can how do we back a winner uh race two horse number one exceed Goes up against Wiona Chevy here. They look the main two. Look, Exceed the Sale was going for three straight last start. Just wanted to lay out around the home turn and down the straight there at Eagle Farm. Probably cost herself the race. She gets three kilos off here for Bella Young. She doesn't even need a claim at the moment. I know you spoke to her earlier in the week. But, yeah, she gets three off. So she'll carry no more weight. Bella jumps on. The other one, Wiona Chevy, will carry more weight than Exceed the Sale will. And she draws an inside gate. So there's no chance in the world she'll be caught wide or laying out this time around. So I think she can get back in the winner's list from that draw. Number one in race two, Exceed the Sale.
Speaker 2All right, Dan. What else have you got for us?
Speaker 22Race seven, horse number nine, Soverato. An interesting runner. Now, there's not a lot of tempo about in this race seven. I'd say Grand Impact and King Tire both go forward. But I'm going to take a pun here. Chris Waller had her accepted also at Randwick. He made a decision this morning to keep her on the Gold Coast. She's had a couple of nice. soft trials. I just think from that gate, she can position up reasonably close with the lack of speed. And I think those leaders could be vulnerable late. Now, we saw her win first up last preparation. She was very impressive. I think she's got a great chance. And look, the money has been there for her so far. If it continues on or she doesn't double her price before we get to race time, I think she's got a great chance of winning that race. So I've just got a gut feeling she'll run really well. That's Soverato, race seven, number nine.
Speaker 2So race seven, number nine. Anything else for us, Chris?
Speaker 22Yeah, we'll go with race eight. Horse number four here, who won so dominantly at Ipswich last start. That's metaphorically trained by Jeff Dunn at Bow Desert. Now, formerly trained in New South Wales. First two runs this prep were pretty ordinary. Then had the stable change and absolutely trotted in there at Ipswich. Now, eased down on the line. The margin was 3.3 lengths. The second horse, Global Eclipse, came out and won convincingly at Doobin yesterday after sitting wide all the way. So the form line's strong. Once again, we get Bella Youngberry on board and gate number one. So plenty of favours there for metaphorically there on Saturday. So I think we'll run well also.
Speaker 2Beautiful. So they're the threes, race eight, number three plays. But we'll finish off with race eight, number four.

And the cup was taken out by Sav on Ice, who was excellent once again. Well, he likes to fire on this day because he goes back to back in the cup, defeating another previous Bella Clava Cup winner. In aerosols. And John joins us now. Good morning to you, John. Looks like it was a wonderful day there at Bella Clava yesterday.
Speaker 23Exactly right, Gareth. The last couple of years have seen a bit of a resurgence crowd-wise at Bella Clava. Huge crowd, good weather. And the crowd, not only were they sort of just being in their marquees, but they were getting involved in the racing itself, which is really good. We had good crowds sort of out by the outside rail watching all the races. Big crowds around the mountain yard. And that's sort of what you'll love to see as a racing follower.
Speaker 2Yeah. And Gareth Lynch, one of his biggest days at the office, I reckon, there yesterday.
Speaker 23Exactly right. He'd only trained one black-type winner prior to this, which was earlier this year with Alenia in the Port Adelaide Cup. He hasn't had Sav on Ice for too long. Previously trained by Daryl Carrison, who's now serving a decent suspension. But, yeah, Sav on Ice, we probably know him more as a wet tracker, which worried me coming into yesterday. But he was super.
Speaker 2What about on Saturday, mate? Where do we start with your plays?
Speaker 23I'm going to wait till the last race. Nickish is a horse that's been absolutely flying recently. She's got a great affinity with the Morphaville Parks track. She's won five races on the parks. Last start, she ran over 15.50, which probably just tests her a little bit. And she also ran into a horse called Fast Tempo. I really like the horse Fast Tempo, and he was super beating her. And Nickish just looks like she maps beautifully. Jordan Weatherly's got the claim. She'll get run of race. If she doesn't win, she'll be right in the finish. And the other horse I think could be really hard to beat for the day is Light the Night in race three. Just went back to 1,000 metres last start. It was too short for him. 12.50, well drawn. He'll get a much better run this time.
Speaker 2Yeah. All right, then. So race three, number six, Light the Night. And race nine, number two, Nickish there. Your selections at Morphaville. A few questions. Nickish, what's your selection? Coming through for you, John. What do you make of Indy Wynette? Looks like she's hit the ground running in South Australia. Brave Apache was excellent. Yeah.
Speaker 23Yeah, she had a winner yesterday. Her best horse, Smooth Chino. I thought he ran a super race in the Wiley last week. Early Tempo probably wasn't as strong as people thought it might be, including myself. He finished off really well under the big weight. Her horses have been presenting well in the yard. And she's had a few horses sort of at lower benchmark level, but they're all running well. So I've been really impressed with her stable since they've come to SA. And, yeah, I'm happy to follow any of her horses at the moment. They're going well.

Speaker 2It was exciting to have night racing back at Launceston last night.
Speaker 24Yeah, it was outstanding. Nice Launceston evening, Jay. Typically a little bit cool, but the weather turned it on for us. The track looked amazing. It raced as we expected. I think most people that did the form thought it would race a little bit to the front, and it proved to be that way. If the leaders got a soft time of it, they proved pretty hard to run down. In a couple of races, they overdid it, and you could make a little bit of ground. So really good to have night racing back, 22 for the season. We're one down. We're there on AFL Grand Final Eve for a program. It will be broadcast on Racing.com. So looking forward to a big season ahead. Imogen Miller had a couple of winners there last night. Glenn Stevenson had a couple as well. And I think there's some good horses to follow out of that. I think Imogen's pair, Lynn Fizzy and Alferino, can work through the grades pretty quickly. And Alpine Fury for Stevo is one that promised a lot early on and kind of hasn't really gone on with it. But I think it was a pretty emphatic win last night.
Speaker 2Imogen had a good day. Fighting Floyd was nearly scratched at the gauge. But then it ran a mighty race at 100 to 1 yesterday at Caulfield.
Speaker 24Yeah, if you had something each way, G, it was a bit of a tough watch. Yeah, heartbreaking. Yeah, I thought it might sneak into the money there late in the piece. Yeah, it was an interesting placement, fighting Floyd. He's been a real favorite down here in Tassie, but he's now 9. So to make the decision to go across the water, there's really nothing for him down here. He doesn't really go in Launceston or Devonport. So Hobart's his track. They found a good race for him, Benchmark 7. And he acquitted himself really well, better than the $101 chance. But yeah, Imogen Miller was on the flight back from Melbourne to Launceston last night. I'm sure she would have loved to see a phone that she had a couple of winners. And then she had to help drive the horses back to Seven Mile Beach. So that's the glamorous life of a horse trainer.
Speaker 2Yeah, 100%. We've got the awards coming up on Friday night. Gigi's mistruth is probably $1.01, I reckon, to win Horse of the Year.
Speaker 24Well, she's... The Group 1 winner in the field, gee, so she's probably a short-priced favourite, as you suggest. But, I mean, she's up against Asphar, who won the Devonport and Launceston Cups, and he's on the way to the Geelong Cup. And Saniya, who's probably the standout three-year-old in a really strong crop as well. So if she is to be successful, Gigi's mistruth with the Horse of the Year, it'll be three successive years she's gone two-year-old, three-year-old and Horse of the Year. And the last... Last horse to do that down here, gee, was Mystic Journey. So she'd be in pretty rare company if she does do that. But, no, looking forward to a great night in Hobart. We'll have 200-plus in the room. We've got some really good inductees into the Hall of Fame, which I'll be able to touch on when we catch up a little bit more next week. And, yeah, it should be a really good night.
Speaker 2Sensational. And Dean Braun, he's a good man, Brawny. And he went to Tasmania and got the cash there on Sunday.
Speaker 24Whenever he comes to... Yeah, whenever he comes to Tassie G, Yeah. He seems to get the cash. He's got... He had two winners last week. And he's got two runners in Hobart. Vivid Dream won last week and is in again in Race 6. And Bear Hunter is in Race 5. So the Braun double Race 5, Race 6. Dylan Ford in the sulky, who's the state's leading driver this year, might be the way to get something out of Sunday's 10 race card in Hobart.

Speaker 24what you thought about that yeah i saw a little bit of the vision i mean the stewards deemed that it was basically the horse's fault so the horse reared uh froggy grabbed on basically as the gates released so i mean the horse was smashed in bedding so there'll be plenty of punters that were aggrieved but unfortunately it's just one of those ones that was the horse's manners that were at fault rather than any issue with i guess the barrier tendon all the barriers so uh bookies

Speaker 25how did that story unfold oh look it's it is quite a long story and so i'll try and keep it as short as i can but um yeah look so i was riding a bit of track work for a few years at home and then worked for gordon elliott before i came out to sydney i went to sydney there for um a few months there and then just obviously it's very hard out there and just was trying to look for opportunity to get going and um adam trinder was looking for an apprentice so i came down to him and look he's been very good to me and gave me some great opportunity opportunities and got me going and i've been with him since i finished my apprenticeship as well so um yeah we have a great
Speaker 2um great thing going which is good um is there any ambition to ride outside of tasmania now because i've obviously you've been able to um put yourself on the map in a way with your success in tasmania
