Giddy Up Full Show (16/09/26)

This episode of Giddy Up with Gareth Hall featured the Wednesday Agenda segment with trainers Troy Causton and Kelvin McEvoy. The main discussion centered on the Victoria Derby, with concerns about its Group 1 status being at risk of downgrading by the Asian Pattern Committee. Causton and McEvoy debated whether the Derby distance should remain at 2500m or be shortened, with Causton arguing for solutions rather than opinions. The conversation touched on breeding trends favoring sprinters over stayers, the challenges of selling staying horses, and the need for industry-wide changes. Trainer transparency about horse health issues, including viruses and foot abscesses, was highlighted as important for educating punters. The segment also covered Matthew Cartwright's removal from a Sydney horse in favor of Zac Lloyd, with McEvoy and Causton discussing owner prerogative versus jockey loyalty. Post-race jockey interviews, particularly Harry Coffey's, were praised for providing valuable information. Later, professional punter Kingsley Bartholomew joined for Beyond the Barriers, sharing insights on resilience, bankroll management, and the importance of reinventing yourself in the ever-changing punting landscape.

Speaker 2Yes, good morning. This is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall. And this Wednesday, it's the 16th of September. Where is our life going? How quickly has this year gone? It's already the middle part of September. Unbelievable. Well, it's a big hello to you listening on your local RSN 927 dial and SEN track dial, wherever you may be listening on the SEN and RSN apps. Of course, if you're listening to us a little later on, on the podcast, it's great to have your company. Of course, if you're watching us on racing.com. Big show coming your way. Jeez, these segments become popular. The Wednesday Agenda. Troy Causton and Kelvin McEvoy to talk about a host of different topics. In the first hour, the Australian President and the Australian Vice President of the Trainers Association. Kingsley Bartholomew will be my special guest for Beyond the Barriers. I was thinking what path I would go down with Kingsley. Obviously, he's one of the most well-known punters in this country. And he's got an opinion on how he thinks the game's going at the moment. But I thought, like, we can talk a bit of politics. But for the majority of my audience, I reckon they would think that they'd be sick of all that. So we might just see if he can help us back a winner. His strategy, how he goes about it. Any advice that he can give us. Whether he's changed the way that he's punted 20 years ago to the day to what he does now. So his favourite trainers, his favourite jockey. So I'm looking forward to catching up with the King. That's just after nine o'clock. We'll find you plenty of winners today across the three codes with bag of tips. We'll concentrate on the thoroughbred venues right across the country. We're at Canterbury, Caulfield, Heath. A perfect day in Melbourne today. Doonbin, Bella Clava. It's Bella Clava Cup Day. And you know one man's forgotten where he's come from. Alvin McEvoy usually would have missed that meeting, but he doesn't even know where Bella Clava is these days. Belmont, Launceston, night racing there. So looking forward to that. The best from the West with Darren McCauley. And then we'll talk Greyhound racing. The weekly chase with Jason Adams and Georgie Ferugia. And Jason Thompson, the champion Greyhound trainer, will join us as well. After he qualified a couple of his stars for the million dollar chase. Winning the Tamora Cup there on Sunday. Giddy Up always brought to you by Bet365. It's never ordinary when it's brought to you. Bet365.com. Bet365. What's gambling really costing you? For free and confidential support, visit GamblingUpOnline.org.au. And the Caulfield Underwood Stakes meeting this Saturday. Group 1 racing at its very best. Plus, you'll get to see the mighty Brisbane Lions take on the Hawthorne Football Club on the big screen after the races there at Caulfield. Let's get stuck into the Wednesday agenda.
Speaker 1Send in your questions on 0499 736 736 to the Garrard's Horse and Hound message line. It's time for the Wednesday agenda. Troy Caulston.
Speaker 2Hello to you.
Speaker 1Morning, Gareth.
Speaker 3How are you? Good. Thank you, mate. And Calvin McEvoy. Hello to you. Morning, Gareth. And amazing what you said off air that this Wednesday agenda is now outperforming the Monday means test by about 20%. Not quite.
Speaker 2Not quite yet. But Louie's got the numbers there. I think you've made up some ground, but they've got a bit of a head start on you. But if you keep up the work that you're doing at the moment, like the sky's the limit for you, Calvin.
Speaker 3Wayne Horse has got a very big following. That's all. Yes.
Speaker 2Yes. I thought it was Johnny. Yeah. Well, Johnny O'Neill thinks he'll try. Back to the Caulfield Cup there, along with Ozzy and his connections. I think he's dreaming a little bit, but in this game of ours, you need to have confidence and you need to have, and you've got a dream, don't you, Calvin?
Speaker 3No doubt. No, Johnny's, to be fair, he's putting his money where his mouth is. He's buying some nice horses and yeah, I heard how confident he was and it's good to see. Were you happy with half yours there on Saturday? I don't think the horse could have ran better. I really think it was an amazing return over a mile, which is well. Well, short of his best, um, he, he, you know, he was, I think he got beat four lengths and he ran the third quickest sectional. So, um, I think he ran enormous. Everyone's talking about all these other horses in the race, but, uh, I couldn't have been
Speaker 2happier. So as a trial, I'll ask Troy here. So you've got a horse like half yours and he hasn't won since the Melbourne Cup and he's running great races. Like he's run some brilliant races without winning. Like, um, obviously you've got to set these horses for races. 2000 metres. 2000 metres for him and then the two miles of the Melbourne Cup. Um, but it is a, a, a situation with these horses that you've got to build to your grand final and hopefully the brakes go your way.
Speaker 4Yeah, spot on. And they're not, uh, they're not machines. They need to build up and they need those miles in their legs to be able to get where, um, Calvin and Tony want to take him. Uh, I thought it was an outstanding first up run for as far as the Melbourne Cup, uh, is concerned.
Speaker 2I think Autumn Boy is the perfect example. Like Chris Waller, he didn't use that first up. Group one race as a trial, but that horse was, he was okay. I thought first up in a memory, but then you watch him second up in that race and you think, well, did you want to be on him third up? And there's going to be horses like Sir Delius. What did you make of him?
Speaker 3Well, I thought it was a bit of a boxing match up front. Um, it was interesting. It really was perspective. Yeah. And in saying that, it's not like they went really fast. It was actually still a bit of a sit and sprint. So I, I don't think that probably, um, suited a lot of horses, but, uh, yeah, tactical. I, I was very pleased that our horse was at the back relaxing while a few of these other fancy horses were, um, going toe to toe early. Yeah.
Speaker 4He's probably, he's probably run really well, Sir Delius, when you think about what he's done, the work that he's had to do to get across and then hold on like he did. I thought it was a pretty good run.
Speaker 2Would you want to be on him for the Cox Plate still?
Speaker 4Um, I think it's, geez, I'll tell you what, if she's a, she's an alibi I was going to the Cox Plate, I know who I'd be on. But, um, Sir Delius, I thought that was a great first up run for a Cox Plate preparation for sure. Yeah.
Speaker 3I think he's more open than he'd just been a, yeah, I mean, you've been talking, you, you've had him over the line for two years. Who, Sir Delius? Yeah, you have.
Speaker 2Well, he would have won last year. Well, he may have, but we'll never know. No, we'll never know. And, um, Johnny O'Neill sat in Troy's seat there on Monday saying that it's game on. And is Autumn Boyd going to the Cox Plate? No, I think Autumn Boyd, like, I had a chat to Guy Moldcast, who's part of that team yesterday. Chris Waller wouldn't give too much away, but sometimes with Guy, you get him on because he's a bit of a character. And sometimes he lets things, he doesn't. Um, he, he, he, he doesn't think sometimes like he should be thinking really like he said, oh, Lindemann, it'll be hard to beat in Melbourne. I said, oh, so Lindemann is going to Melbourne. Oh, no, no, no. I don't know. I don't know if that's happening. And he, and I said, so from a stone perspective, and this, this was a comment that really interested me. I said, so Guy, if Autumn Boyd, is he worth more if he wins a Cox Plate or a Golden Eagle? Did you hear those comments? No. What do you think he said?
Speaker 4Um, by three times.
Speaker 3Yeah, that's interesting. But he, he lives in Sydney, doesn't he? Yeah, he does live in Sydney.
Speaker 4Oh, and I probably, it's hard to quantify that at this stage because the Golden Eagle is so new. Whereas the Cox Plate, um, you think of, think of the stallions that have won the Cox Plate.
Speaker 3What have you got? Seamus Award. He's, he's not a commercial stallion as such, but he's a good stallion. He's a great stallion. Adelaide won the Cox Plate. Yeah. But in recent times, what have we got? Adelaide who only came out for a year or two. State of Rest. State of Rest.
Speaker 2They stopped up at Newgate. He's flying in Europe at the moment, State of Rest, and they sent him home and gave him a year off. I don't know if they can get him back or not. Oh, we've got a very nice State of Rest. Have you? I've got a good one too.
Speaker 3Very nice State of Rest. I won't be telling you much more information, Gareth, but there are shares available. State of Rest. Yeah. Mine as well.
Speaker 4Funnily enough, my, I think mine's going to be a bit of a stayer, which we'll probably get to during this, uh, segment, but, um, I've still got some shares in her as well. She's the only one I've got shares left in.
Speaker 2Well, they, they tell me they're, they're, they're nice horses, the State of Rest.
Speaker 3So, well, Tony, this particular horse, my father, Tony wants to keep 50% off and I've
Speaker 2told him he's not allowed to. Yeah. How much is he? How much will it cost us? Oh, it's not, it wasn't expensive. I think it was a hundred grand. And so, so State of Rest is the perfect example. Like he was, he won in three countries, I think at group one level, and it's been difficult for him to make a go of it at start. They, they gave him a year off at Newgate basically. And he's getting some nice results. I think he had a nice result across the weekend in, in Ireland or the UK. I think it was Ireland.
Speaker 3And think about it. His Cox Plate, he's, he's been, you know, finished alongside Animo, who's the hot new stallion, isn't he? You know, and people argue that maybe Animo should have won that race, but that was a very big performance and, and, you know, they raided through the roof. So I think he's a massive chance State of Rest.
Speaker 4Very difficult for stallions in their third year as well. You've got first year, they're always very popular. Second year, you get a bit of a flow on. Third year, nothing's out on the track yet. Everyone's sitting back just to wait. They don't want to put all their eggs in one basket. It's a very difficult year. Yeah.
Speaker 2And then you've got like, so Animo's different. He was a Cox Plate champ, but when you talk to Darlene, you're trying to like, he was so popular, Animo, because he should have won a Golden Slipper. Like he was a star two-year-old as well. And then he trained through and should have won more. It's a strong argument that he was, he was really unlucky in a Cox Plate.
Speaker 3It's funny, Gareth, when you go, when, when we go to the sales each year, generally in January, Magic Millions, there's always one first season stallion that is just the flavor, the hot. Everyone's talking about it. And, and it was Animo by a hundred miles this year, wasn't it?
Speaker 4I only managed to pick up one, but I can tell you it's, I wouldn't swap her for any of my other. The Animo. Oh, she's outstanding.
Speaker 3We trialed a colt last Friday, first two-year-old trials at Flemington. So look, I think they're going to be, they're going to be a horse that gets there at two, but trains on.
Speaker 2So if I gave you a hundred thousand dollars now, we've gone off script again. You'd get about 5% of the Animo this year.
Speaker 3No, no.
Speaker 2So, no. Say if I got a million dollars. All right. So, um, would you prefer to buy three state of rest or one? Animo after what you've, what you've seen.
Speaker 4Three state arrests. Purely on numbers, three compared to one, you're going to get.
Speaker 2You might get a good one.
Speaker 4You might get a good one and you buy one. Someone has a million dollars and they want to buy one horse or five or six. I'm always going to say five or six.
Speaker 3Spread the risk. Yeah, I agree. But, um, maybe you could buy two Animos and one state arrest.
Speaker 2My phone's starting to ring. It's, um, um, it's, um, so we forgot about, so you think Reggie, Reggie goes, how can you forget? So you think.
Speaker 3Of course. What a, what a stallion he is.
Speaker 4He's been outstanding.
Speaker 3Been an amazing stallion, but again, very difficult to syndicate for any trainer.
Speaker 4You buy them and you cannot sell them.
Speaker 3And he, he won, he sired three group one winners in one day, a couple of years ago.
Speaker 4And one of the best racehorses in the world, wasn't he?
Speaker 3Yeah.
Speaker 2So they're tough to sell. This is what I can't get in the racing game. All right. Um, so one of my favorite sizes prior to Dubai, he had Bella Nipatina and pride of Jenny, both dominating. At weight for age, winning Everest, then doing what pride of Jenny was. And, um, he wasn't as popular as some other stallions that we've, we don't know of. And that's what I can't work out. Grouse stallion.
Speaker 4But grouse stallion, pound for pound. You can't sell them.
Speaker 2So that doesn't make sense to me.
Speaker 4A lot of things don't make sense. In the breeding game, it's so tough. It's so just, it's trendy and it's what people want. And if you don't buy with the trends, you go broke.
Speaker 2So isn't there opportunities for owners and breeders to change their minds? And set to get, um, value in this game. Like there's obviously opportunities for value then. If that's the case.
Speaker 4Yeah, there is, but it just, it's going to require that person to go out on a limb and take a risk.
Speaker 3And maybe a little bit of patience as well. Like, I think, um, I think that's the thing when we have owners that are keen to buy into a yearling at the sales, their first question is, is it going to be a two year old? And I think that's just the way it's going. And I mean, I love two year old racing more than, more than anyone, but, um. Um, if you do say to the, that potential client, look, we think it's probably going to be a three year old and get better. They sometimes don't really want to be that patient, you know, that that's the issue that we're sort of seeing.
Speaker 2So if you go into, this is another, so if you go into a pub, all right, say in Melbourne, you go to the rising sun hotel and you've got the punters there on a Saturday, it's a great pub. And you go to them, you name me the top three races that you want to win. It's the Melbourne cup, Cox plate, could be a golden slipper. Maybe the balaclava cup, but the top two will be the Cox plate, maybe the Everest now. So Everest Cox plate, Melbourne cup, they're the three and two of them, you've got to be patient middle distance horses, or you have to look from outside of Australia. To me, that doesn't make sense that you, you, um, and, and that's my concern for the Cox plate at the moment, because you, you listen to you guys and all of the, the, the breeders and what's working commercially in this game. It's sprint. It's sprint. It's sprint. It's sprint. It's sprint. It's sprint. It's sprint.
Speaker 4And it gets back to, and everybody's entitled to spend their money on whatever they want. You know, these, the big owners, they're spending two to 300 million a year in Europe, buying all these horses to come down here. But what's it doing to our breeding industry?
Speaker 5Yeah.
Speaker 4It's that's money. That's not going back in. That's us not being able to buy those staying or, you know, horses that are going to take a little bit of time because everyone's just buying them ready made from Europe. So it's very, very hard to get people to invest back in horses that are going to take a bit of time and get them to the classics.
Speaker 2But surely that's changing in a way now, because it's so difficult to buy these horses in Europe. Once upon a time, we could find a horse in Europe, but now with the Middle East and America, the way that they've changed their game in a way.
Speaker 3Well, I think there's a small pool, pool of owners that are still buying at the big level, but they're probably a pool of owners that are in two or three camps, aren't they? I mean, we see, we see them. We see them in a lot of the other nominations and again, this is nothing against Ma or Waller, they're not doing anything wrong. They're in two camps. Yeah, they've got 10 or 12 of the 17 nominations in there, those sort of features and, um, it's, that's what makes it difficult and yeah, credit to them. They're not, they're just, they're flying. That's why people are going there.
Speaker 4But maybe that is a good thing though, that, that, that it, that it is becoming harder and harder and more expensive, but it might, it might encourage those owners over here now to put back in and maybe buy a nice state of rest or so. And give them some time.
Speaker 2Cause you got to give these horses opportunity, state of rest. And it was sad to hear that Henry said that they'd just given him the year off basically, because if you, if these horses don't get the opportunity, then you're never going to solve the problem that we continue to talk about.
Speaker 4It's hard, but Henry's also running a commercial business. That's what I mean.
Speaker 2So I'm not having gone, but he just explained it to us. And then you, then you just think, well, um, we just, we're, we're not going down that path to breed stays because commercially you can't do it. Yeah.
Speaker 3Maybe that's a segue into talk, talking a bit more about this Derby thing, which caused a bit of controversy. A hundred percent.
Speaker 2My phone. I said, it wasn't even me that wrote the article. So we'll discuss all of that in just a moment. This is the Wednesday Agenda.
Speaker 1Join the conversation. Text us on 0499 736 736. Live across Australia. This is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 2Welcome back to Giddy Up. We'll get onto the Derby. Um, we'll go up, obviously haven't read your rundown, but it was a good segue anyway, Kelvin. So we'll get to the Derby. And I love Nick Williams. I think he's, he's got plenty of passion and obviously invest a lot into the game. Um, he quite tweeted the grab that you put out there yesterday. We put out yesterday, last week regarding your thoughts on the Victoria Derby and he, and it reads, this is his social media post. This is a very sad situation. Erase it. It's been run since 1855. They would want to have compelling reasons to change it. I didn't hear them in this segment. I encourage all those, including handicappers who like to talk down the race to look at the subsequent successes of horses out of the race. It's pretty good. In fact, much better than most other juvenile group one races, perhaps rather than changing the distance. What needs to be looked at is how the handicappers are rating these races. And then he goes on to say about the Derby conversation. I've been told by those who are meant to know. All the trainers want VRC Derby distance shortened. So I thought I'd ask a few, I got a very different response. In fact, only one agreed if they want a 2000 meter group one, it's already on the week before is called the spring champion stakes. And I've had a host of other correspondence from different people in the game. Breeders owners, punters, trainers, especially a few trainers regarding, um, whether the Derby distance should stay the same or they should change it. And I don't think. There's been more of a debate that has divided an industry like this.
Speaker 4That's good. Yes. In my opinion, that's good. And you know what? Yeah, I'm, I'm not doing it to be an agitator and, and guess I've won a Derby and I loved it. It was one of the greatest days that I've ever had on race course. I don't want it to become a group too. And if everybody read my article, that was my, that's what I'm scared of. I don't want it to get downgraded. I want the pattern. Look, so you know what? Let's I'm not against keeping it at 2,500. I'm just trying to come up with a solution. So rather than everyone have a crack at me and say, don't change it. I'm not against, I'm not against it at all. Let's come up with a solution so we can make it better. Let's stop spending 300 million on horses in Europe and develop our horses so that we can get, um, Derby runners. We can get a better field. We can get a bigger field. We can get horses that go on and race as geldings as at four and five in our wait for age races. Perfect. Okay. I'm, I'm all up for that, but you know what? Everybody let's come up with solutions, not opinions. Everybody's got opinions. Let's come up with some bloody solutions.
Speaker 2And, but why should our Victoria Derby, it's the Victoria Derby. Well, like it should always be a group one.
Speaker 4But it is at risk at the moment that the, that the Asian pattern committee is talking about downgrading it to a group two, if we don't improve it. So I'm stating facts. I'm not, it's not my, it's not the Australian, it's definitely not the Australian trainers association opinion. And I, I'm literally, I've spoken to Calvin and a few boys at, um, Flemington and whatnot. This is my opinion, but I'm trying to come up with a solution. If it's wrong, no problems. You know what? Someone get on the phone, speak to me. I'm more than happy to talk to anyone about it. I don't want it to be dropped to a group too. If we can keep it at 2,500 and it's remains a group one and we get more interest in it and people stop spending money in Europe and spend it here on our horses coming three. Fantastic. I love it. That's great. It's good for. Our industry. It's good for the games. Good for participants. Good for owners. Yeah. Calvin. See, that was a, that was, that was, well, that's what it should be. But I agree with Joey. I I'm very passionate about it and, and I, and, and it is my opinion and I'm not here, as I said, I'm not here to make trouble or anything like that. I, I want racing to be better. And if we can make it better by keeping it 2,500, let's do it in the right place.
Speaker 3I've been, I've actually thought a lot about this since, and I've read a little bit on. I've read a couple of the comments, I've read a few of the critics or whatever, that of, of some comments are smashing and I think what people, um, a few of the comments I've read, the main thing is, and it's real, we cannot lose group one status, right? That is the main thing. The other thing is, um, all, all the people that have tweeted about, you know, how great the Derby is like, I've got shares in Derby horses. We can't sell them at the moment. All trainers are probably not going and putting the position of the trainer. We're not going to go to the sales. And he used to say. as much as we'd like to on those lovely horses. is because they're harder to sell it's a chicken and the egg right if we've got orders coming out coming like if we've got orders and people saying hey i'd love to buy 10 in a derby horse it's going to make trainers go out and buy more of those staying types that actually isn't happening at the moment so it's sort of not helping itself the other thing is and i said this to troy the other day like if it's a matter of they need to make the derby rate better and again this is from the asian racing pattern asian pattern committee it's nothing to do with anyone here maybe they should pump maybe they should go on a three-year plan pump some money into it at 2500 yeah and then re-evaluate changing the distance and i was sort of for changing the distance i've thought a bit more about it but make it worth three or four million dollars and see if that changes the
Speaker 4ratings before you change the distance yeah there's a solution perfect come up with the
Speaker 2solution i think it needs more money if you if you're going to go down that path really because then it does that's not easy though like no it's not because where does the money come from exactly and
Speaker 4we're we're currently holding prize money levels where we can and rbl have worked bloody hard to do
Speaker 2that but that's but that's like and you make a good point there calvin everyone can um rah rah about geez how dare you try and change history and and ring up and take a share in a derby horse
Speaker 3because if people are wanting to buy them we're gonna buy them yeah it's supply and demand and
Speaker 2then breeders will breed more and people want to and and people want to go oh well the breeding industry aren't breeding more stays but they can't survive because oh well we better we better do the right thing for australian racing and breed more stays and then you go to the sales and you're not making any money and then
Speaker 3the breeders are breeding stays take him to the sales and they're passing and they're losing on everyone they're going to stop doing it that's just business right anyone would do that business so i think there's a lot of little things that need to change um and yeah i think culture we
Speaker 2need to change a whole culture that that we've developed over the last 15 years but that's what i like i and that's what doesn't make sense to me in a way when you can walk into a pub and you go what race do you want to win and say the melbourne cup and the cox play and i think the everest would be in that conversation i don't know paulie either what would you say paulie what
Speaker 6race would you want to win he wants to win the english premier league yeah yeah with us so what races would you want to win i'd be happy with the melbourne cup look i'm a traditionalist right i'm old school and i would prefer the derby to stay group one level but if they have to change a change but for me it's a melbourne cup yeah i love love love the melbourne cup there's a reason it's it's called the race that stops a nation because
Speaker 2it does correct what about you louis what race would you want to win the cox play so there you
Speaker 4go when i was younger i was cox play and then as i grew up it's the melbourne cup i'd love to win i've only ever had two runners so that's what i can't ask me yeah what race well you've already
Speaker 3won he wants to win a cox play what race you want to win the cox play oh i do but the melbourne cup and and it is genuinely genuinely like the race right and my old man's lucky enough he won a cox played a long time ago so he's won all three yeah and he said nothing compared to the you know winning the melbourne cup what it actually does changes your life yeah correct it really does so
Speaker 4so all right this is the get you on sen on a wednesday morning get you the vice presidency
Speaker 2of the ata so and you get some it looks like he's got a sponsorship with ford if he's wearing the ford bag free coffee as well gareth yeah free coffee as well i thought you'd be a holder man but you're a ford man ford man through and through we can talk about that a bit later on so tell me this then kelvin um you win a melbourne cup so do you have people now email you for orders saying find me a melbourne cup horse because you've had that ability and shown that you can
Speaker 3win a melbourne cup i had more emails saying why didn't you email me about half yours when you were selling him you know and and the thing is i mean he sold quite quickly but yes i think a little bit but um where do they want you to source these melbourne cup horses is it the sale or from overseas well it's it's generally from more so from overseas but sometimes i don't want to learn right because they don't want to wait you know it's a if you're buying a stayer we all know this and that we're not going to beat around the bush if you're buying a staying yearling and you know it's going to take a couple of years and then you get to the point where the horse is not good enough it's a slow burn so that is the risk that you've got to take and i think um but that's what you need to do to try and win a melbourne it's only an extra year isn't it generally and i think the good like look i think if you've got a top class horse that's going to be a stayer they're going to be performing back end two three anyway yeah i think they will yeah so i find that interesting like um yeah and the other thing gary sorry there is a lot of money a lot of really good money in this country but especially this state victoria for staying races like there's more money in i
Speaker 2don't think racing victoria and the pras could do too much more no they well they can't it's just
Speaker 4i i don't know i don't know the answer i'd love if someone came to me with it and i'm more than happy to work on it and do what i can as the ata president to encourage more breeders to breed i'm
Speaker 3just looking at all these text messages coming about this state of rest they're gonna have to be quick gary because there's only there's not much left now well i've got 10 percent yeah get in
Speaker 2yeah um you're 10 percent in mind as well we'll get to some text messages good morning team um can we please ask calvin about a horse called jarred of dar and what it's being set for is that how you pronounce it jar bar dar jar bar dar um i'd love to get an update there probably one of the owners can you update your owners instead of them asking no there's only there's only one one owner
Speaker 3an owner and his family very nice horse that um we were lucky enough to be given he's had a couple of starts ran second and natural fling on her debut at caulfield yeah he's had two jump outs and he's heading to caulfield on the 27th for a three-year-old 1100 meter race hopefully he might be uh i'm not going to say a cool more horse but that's sort of around those those races
Speaker 2so you think he's arguably the best cox plate winning stallion he's a beauty that's from stew um imagine what the autumn sun could have done if the golden eagle was wasn't around that's a good point um was it the autumn sun the golden eagle wasn't around when he wasn't around adam i will be a great stallion just like the autumn sun so so you think reduce choice balispray all one or perform well in a caulfield guineas the caulfield guineas isn't got that same aura about it anymore really as a stallion
Speaker 4that's dropped off because of the way the way that the cool more is gone do you think boys
Speaker 2new zealand still produce good staying prospects or has that market changed as well it's changed
Speaker 4in a great way and um not in a great way in a bad way in my opinion i think that the news that they're and i'm probably going to get smacked for this as well but they had a real opportunity where new zealand was just as and everything like that and i reckon a lot of them tried to come over to and they had faster mares and faster stallions and they went away from the breeding stairs so
Speaker 2in saying that new zealand when you have a look at the last five years they've produced some of
Speaker 4the best sprinter miles world racing they've done that well but they were known for producing the
Speaker 2best days yeah the only way to yeah golden 60 there's mr brightside thunderstruck um they had a purple patch there for a long time kane rising did i mention him you did um he's a freak but let's be honest only way to improve breed is banned two-year-old racing obsession with precious um can only be changed by force silly silly yeah that won't happen is the issue that owners don't want to buy potential derby winners or we can't breathe them or trainers don't know how to prepare a horse to win a vrc garbage comment okay we don't know how to prepare horses
Speaker 4to win a derby that's that's stupid comment but they're not out there if you said go and buy me a just go right through to find you know everything sprint a mile of base now yeah and and young yeah
Speaker 2um hey guys the suggestion the other day of having a derby run for four-year-olds is a good one maybe we can have a 2000 guineas run for three-year-olds on the card there on their first saturday at flemington and then maybe have a four-year-old derby would that work maybe but it brings into
Speaker 4account i think that we're what differentiates us at the moment is the derby that european horses cannot run in our derby or they just don't whereas if we had a four-year-old you could get the three-year-olds from europe to come down and
Speaker 3probably dominate and the other thing is um hong kong love buying maybe not so much victorian derby but they love the queensland derby form because they can buy a nice three-year-old their four-year-old
Speaker 2derby hi team we are worried about the grueling test of a derby 2500 for three-year-olds is it feasible to drop the weight scale so they carry less weight to stop that concern i don't think a couple of kilos is probably just do what they do in hong kong make it a four-year-old derby will be the only state and it'll keep them horses in the country instead of being sold to hong kong we need to be different and make the race 10 times better in saying that there's a lot of people that might buy staying prospects because you can sell it onto hong kong because you can make good money
Speaker 3from that why don't we keep it how it is and then put another race on a four-year-old derby in victoria yeah be careful if peter villani is listening they might they might do it and see
Speaker 2um hi gareth i live in your favorite part of the world new sir i'm a teacher in a big school with 200 staff i can confidentially say only one other staff member would know the everest no students have heard of it everyone knows when the melbourne cup is on and we don't get the day off so it's not because of that that's from special there you go it's interesting you are very famous in noosa too yeah i found that out the other day i love
Speaker 4noosa where's the nick question what's that horse you've got nick charming nick oh charming nick yeah i actually watched a gallop the other day just so i could answer every i reckon every week we get a chance 700 000 owners at gallop very good on my time
Speaker 2to take a break we're going to come back we had an interesting conversation with chris waller yesterday regarding like um he told us on air in fact about joker's grin i said our joker's grin going because he was heartbroken he said you wouldn't believe it gareth he's he's got a virus this morning i said oh i've had all my stars gallop basically and um this has just ruined my morning and then we got onto the conversation about how you handle such a situation in a stable and then i heard a grab from i don't know brian so about how he's had a a low level virus that has um ripped through belly doyle and it affected their season there's no doubt about that on the weekend he did so there must be over that virus but we're going to talk all about that straight
Speaker 1after this here on giddy up join the conversation text us on 0 4 double 9 7 3 6 7 3 6 live across australia this is giddy up with
Speaker 2gareth hall welcome back to giddy up the gareth horse and hound text lines on fire today isn't it louis 0 4 double 9 7 3 6 7 3 6 um i want to play some comments this is what chris waller had to say to me yesterday about joker's grin he did get back to me after that conversation so he had a foot abscess or he's got a foot abscess that caused the virus so they're hoping it um hopefully the the they can get over the foot abscess and he goes around on saturday but it's probably unlikely um and then this is what he had to say about the virus say then and then after that i know brian talking about also that they've had a a low level virus that has been going through belly doyle for most of the european season isolate them so it's going
Speaker 7back to your covert rules and um isolation is the key um getting them out of the population get them to the farm get them to a paddock uh within 24 hours before they shed the virus that's what works for us yeah um so that's why it's so important to have accurate temperature taking and um it's more so in the spring the autumn it's it's a lot more relaxed but it's it's this time every year that there's always something bubbling yeah um and the severity of it's always different every year this is this year it's just a low-grade virus and um most horses won't get it some horses will get it and they'll get over it very quickly christmas cough
Speaker 8going to the start yesterday and that's uh listen it's one of them things that you're never uh prepared for uh obviously for the last couple of months we've kind of been fighting a very low-grade infection through the whole place through all the horses two-year-olds and three-year-olds and listen it pops up every now and then and disappears pops up in their bloods it pops up in their scopes and you can't be sure where it is but obviously before we run any horse they're always blooded and scoped to make sure that they're perfect and but you don't know sometimes when you travel them it brings it out and it's one of those things that's been there for a couple of months it's we're dealing with it um like you have to you have to keep it going um no horses ran until we're 100 percent are sure but sometimes when they travel it brings some little things to the forwarder so a great insight by the two
Speaker 3champion trainers two of the best in the world give everyone else a chance when those two but
Speaker 2i think it's and part of the wednesday agenda the main aim of this segment is to um educate punters from a trader's perspective because sometimes we just think it's black and white like geez how come this horse went so well it went dreadful there the other day but there's obviously different excuses that we don't know about yeah always and we and we do
Speaker 4our utmost i think um you know the majority of professional stables all scope and blood horses before they race especially on a saturday um so and it does pop up and i think that i think the good thing about um australian racing now is how open trainers have become about telling people about this stuff so it's educating people more to to actually know what's going wrong what happened there um and another thing i think we're going to talk about later is um like the the post-race interviews with harry coffee and craig williams the more open that we are and the more information that we get out to punters and owners i think the better the transparency is and you know let's let's
Speaker 2tell them everything is there a fine line talking to the media calvin and even to your owners like um how much is too much knowledge really what's happening behind closed doors yeah
Speaker 3that is a it's a good question gareth because i suppose um when we talk about within your businesses and trainers like we're talking about maybe a horse is flat for a day or um blood comes back back and it's got an saa mo probably 99 of owners and punters don't understand what a saa is a serum amyloid a it's an you know inflammatory marker on blood right it's about um our experience in in probably reading that blood along with your vet but i reckon half the time if you if you said absolutely everything it could be taken far too much out of context up to and i don't want to sound disrespectful to maybe an owner that doesn't quite understand what it means yeah yeah so you've got to protect i mean no one's running a horse if they're not 100 healthy like we're all not not doing that because you run a horse when they're not right it'll flatten them for the prep yeah but it is a real thing coming to this time of the year the spring with the change of the weather which is what chris said that horses do get little viruses here and there and i remember the week leading to the corfield cup last year half yours is the favorite the horse is spot on and perfect and i was just for having flashbacks to my great friend annabelle nation cox plate morning zaki temperature and i just and i just was having nightmares about this like waiting for sleep could you know i was waiting for something to go wrong which is not how you should think and um you know that and i can say now that particular week we had two horses in the same barn this is a 30 horse barn at fleming it's not a big open place that had uh one of them had a tent one of them had a bad blood and i was just thinking that could be half yours pop up friday morning and thank god he didn't but it's a real thing and i think you do everything you can to um keep everything healthy but it can happen do you have practices in place
Speaker 2then so if you've got a horse that's a virus like chris pointed out it's like covert race yeah you
Speaker 3isolate them as quickly as possible absolutely i mean everyone would do that or like troy's got a farm you know we've got farms we use um just trying to get that them out of the system population because you think about it we're not a big operation like we've got we've got 30 boxes at flemington um boxes at ballarat but at flemington say it's got our 10 hopes for the spring if you get a virus go through there that's your spring gone decimated and it can
Speaker 2be no one's fault no do you think that say for a stable like belly doyle now aiden was transparent then but do you think the punters would have loved to have known a couple of months before it's a difficult situation where you don't really want because if that happens then then
Speaker 4like it would cause you more headaches you can't there's there's no way aiden o'brien's running a horse on saturday if he thinks it's got a virus the virus might have gone through you can't but there's no good um warning everybody oh there's a virus going through to put people off because it's likely not to have had an effect and as i said aiden o'brien's not going to run a horse that he thinks is affected yeah he wants it going there and winning like every other punter that's had their five dollars on so there's no way in the world that he would hold back stuff like that if it right he'd scratch yeah and the horse wouldn't be running has it been like um sometimes you hear
Speaker 2rumors oh there's a virus going through flemington but it's impossible because if if causton's has got a virus that must be coming from cranberry yeah yeah yeah training facilities like but yeah like if a virus goes through cranberry for instance if it's going through the mar camp not necessarily goes through the price kent junior team does it oh it's hard how do you quantify it you know we
Speaker 4don't we don't all use the same vets and we don't all you know the same blood the other thing
Speaker 3stuff the other thing gareth is like it's no different to you you were crook a few weeks ago when you had those couple of days off but like you can feel the effects of that for a week or two after even though your blood's back to normal your temp's good you're eating your training but it
Speaker 2still might be lingering now it's interesting i think it was just an interesting topic to bring up with you guys because um you might be punting really well you might do the form and you might get your speed map right but like there's still things that can go wrong and it's out of your control um and it's like training horses and in every aspect of life in a way but i just found that interesting that um there's so many different variables in this beautiful game we're dealing
Speaker 3with animals at the end of the day this is what everyone needs to remember these are animals with
Speaker 2their own brain their own you know um we're going to take a break we're going to come back with plenty more this is giddy up in the wednesday agenda join the conversation text us on oh four
Speaker 1double nine seven three six seven three six live across australia this is giddy up with gareth hall
Speaker 2oh four double nine seven three six seven three six to join our conversation um you've been big on this troy post-race comments from jockeys we're lucky enough that we get to see a few these days um harry coffee we'll play harry coffee talking to the owners of a live another day after his disappointing effort there's the short price favorite in the bobby lewis at flemington on
Speaker 9saturday obviously it's disappointing because he probably didn't deliver to how we know he can go like the horses that are beating today i personally believe he's got lengths on them i think you just put it down to it's his first time down the straight he's the type of horse that every time you serve something to him he gets better from it i wouldn't be shying away from the straight in the future we just have to back him in and know he'll be better for the run down the straight i personally believe as i said already he's better than them he just didn't handle it his first day experiencing it but i think you soldier on towards caulfield back to where he knows two weeks we all get our confidence up again um it is disappointing today but don't lose too much faith or worry just yet he's learning still he's experiencing new things and he'll be better for today's outing the track's beautiful i know we have some concerns you know that he does like soft ground he is good on soft ground but to me he didn't feel like he was jarring up he was just very unsure of his job out in the middle of the track so he'll be better for it and yeah hopefully we bounce back to our best at caulfield in a couple weeks time so there's
Speaker 3harry coffer you've taught him well calvin i'll tell you what that was exceptional he outstanding although he rode that horse beautifully he kept after he slaughters one which he does do a little bit yeah and he comes out and talks so eloquently and beautiful our owners just love it i said he rode that one beautiful but he's done it and they fall in love with him they forget about the bad
Speaker 2ride yeah and so do you think that um from a jockey's perspective if they just listen to harry any young jockey coming through the ranks it's like and i talk to a lot of owners it goes a long way for them keeping rides or getting rides the way that they and trainers love it as well so important yeah how they communicate yeah
Speaker 4so important i've actually done a talk to uh some of the apprentices coming through um and and just how important that after the race is because you think about these owners and the trainers how much they put into these horses and the jockey gets on for two minutes and if they get off and they you know they probably some of them don't care but if they get off and they show that they don't care you know it's just heartbreaking whereas you get off and you get an explanation like that from harry coffee and that that's exceptional that's that's the kind of information that everybody wants to hear from you and that's what i'm trying to do is i'm trying to make sure that everybody wants to listen to after a race and he's told you exactly what happens so the punters they they get confidence go okay well he didn't handle the track we'll see
Speaker 2him around the corner next time and go from there and yeah and you think well was it a good three with him and you think um um maybe he wants a soft track but harry point out he didn't jar up so you can give him another opportunity on that track if you're taking in the advice there from harry i i
Speaker 3believe in first time down the straight horses get it wrong a bit like caulfield like we've said we go to caulfield some horses go to caulfield for the first time and i'm sure there's plenty of owners and punters and trainers that think it's rubbish but i believe that some horses don't handle the
Speaker 4straight and it's like mini valley yeah yeah you know horses some horses handle it some don't how
Speaker 2do you go with educating your owners when the jockey say something that you disagree with
Speaker 3oh um we just say our point of view we always always send the jockey feedback out even if we don't agree with it because um i know that sometimes maybe a trainer won't send out a jockey report because they don't agree with what they said but everyone's entitled to an opinion it's just information you can say look x said this we don't agree uh blah blah blah but i think
Speaker 4information's key for the owners i wonder whether it's worth and um this is out of nowhere but is it worth because we all get these videos now of our jockeys post race in the big races is it worth putting them up on racing new south wales and racing and racing.com and having that information
Speaker 3there for people they're doing it for the group ones but i mean they're like they're they're there aren't they there's a camera at like they should do it for every race through the car yeah
Speaker 2well you gotta they gotta get permission from the owners and yeah it's the it's their ip i mean when
Speaker 3they get back into the jockeys oh yeah yeah cold standing there saying yeah that's only in for the
Speaker 4in the big group ones though yeah all right and sometimes that's only a little bit of a you know it didn't handle the straight or you know whereas you get something like that that we could put up on a on a website and yeah you click it and not it couldn't happen on the day but in the future
Speaker 2we we get this there's a there's a few different examples of that i think pride of jenny's got her own website now so we get the updates of um what kieran has to say about her i don't know if bob
Speaker 3peters is it true you've got one of them plush toys on your bed yes yes yes why wouldn't you i
Speaker 2love pride of jenny um so there's like i think it's great and the more that the racing industry can be transparent like that and provide us with content like that has to be better for the game yeah i think so and if you and that's the responsibility if you're in this game and you love it and you and like you you're you're providing that type of content then you're helping out the game which is which is a big just all you
Speaker 4need is permission from the trainers or permission from the owners if the owners don't want it given out that's that's that's up to them that's fine you don't want like when we got this date of rest
Speaker 2philly um when you get this date of rest um this horse works sensationally the odds will come up at 50 to 1 i think everyone gets on like you don't want that to be sent out to everyone i actually
Speaker 3want to back it for the derby now next year
Speaker 2we'll see what we can do it's 10 to 9 let's take a break we'll come back with plenty more straight after this
Speaker 1join the conversation text us on 0 4 double 9 7 3 6 7 3 6 live across australia this is giddy up
Speaker 2with gareth hall we're running out of time again but we'll have to go over so hopefully we'll pay you over time um the big news and this this lit up a lot of time and i think it's going to be a the garrison hound text line yesterday matthew cartwright has been told that he won't be writing well written during her sydney campaign into an epsom and a golden eagle zach lloyd who's arguably the second best jockey in new south wales definitely i reckon he's in the top five for jocks at the moment in this country gets the opportunity people there's a lot of people i reckon more than say i reckon the majority of my listeners say that was unfair on maddie um what's your take on it as a from a trainer's perspective we'll start off with you calvin well first of all isn't it amazing
Speaker 3that twitter's blowing up about matthew cartwright getting taken off of this horse and on the flip side craig williams has won 10 group ones on mr brightside he chooses to get off and no one says a word he chose to write so it doesn't matter but if it was the other way around if the hayes boys said we want you off it would be the end of the world and they would cop it and i just don't know what i just think there's always reasons behind things yeah stiff from maddie cartwright's point of view he's done a great job but it's the owner's you know prerogative to choose who they want that horse is coming to australia to contest big races and they want a local good jockey so i mean um sometimes it's uh we're in a tough competitive industry you know fighting for a lot of money and i think i think they've just got to roll with the punches sometimes i i sort of had a a good hard
Speaker 4think about this and i don't stand on either side i get on the fence i am going to sit on the fence on this one from a distance i'm going to sit on the fence on this one from a distance i'm going to a journalistic point of view a good journalist always takes both sides and and analyzes both and puts them both out so if it is definitely it's definitely up to the owners if they want to put zach lloyd on go for their life that's that's their prerogative they pay the bills uh if that's what they want that's what they do the other fact is that um i and i heard trent mason held are talking about luke nolan and peter moody and the loyalty that they've had what would have happened would luke nolan still be luke nolan now if peter moody had taken him off black caviar after he'd won seven in a row and two group ones i think so was this matt cartwright's chance to be the next luke nolan i'm not sure like that's
Speaker 2what i that's the way i see it i think nolan probably like he had typhoon tracy and all that yeah so there's a bit more but and i've seen a little bit in wa i know wa is a little bit different but my time over there like jimmy taylor would never take off jason brown under no circumstances like he was his jockey and if you didn't want jason brown to be the next jason brown um riding your horse and take your horse out of my what if he had a group one star and
Speaker 3it was a risk of losing the horse getting a fight about a jockey yeah i don't from my point of view as a trainer i'll never have a blue with one of my owners about a hundred percent mick mick price
Speaker 2taught me that 20 years ago he said never lose a horse over a jockey yeah and like the owners if they're paying ten thousand a month eight thousand whatever we have to tell me troy is five with me yeah you it's your decision you should decide who rides your horse yeah hundred percent yeah and yeah and even james mcdonald gets told what horse he has to ride these days he doesn't necessarily
Speaker 4pick them it'd be gut-wrenching but it's all it could also make the make maddie cart ride as well like the way that he takes it and the way that he moves on and keeps going with things everyone's going to sit back and say good on you mate you just had a crack you got you got delta shit card
Speaker 3but you've you've made i think how you're right troy how a young jockey or any jockey handles that situation a lot of the industry will be watching and if and there's particularly jockeys we've seen it that have been taking a horse throwing the toys out the cart they start bagging the owners and the trainer behind their back it's a it's a it's not that big an
Speaker 4industry and career defining it can be correct yeah yeah why do we fall to get back up again
Speaker 2type of attitude yeah it's a big wheel and there's a lot of athletes that go through that and it's not just tools racing people get dropped for grand finals cricketers get dropped from the test side um yeah and you know what with luke nolan there's people like luke nolan's a superstar jockey at group one level grand final jockey 42 group one he's been outstanding you would love for him to ride your horse on a big stage like the pressure that he was under with black caviar and he got the job done he got the job done every time he was perfect yeah well what would have like of course moody wants to go to war with l9 yeah um there's still plenty to talk about we're going to talk about the melbourne cut weights this is your case to make your case to the handicapper race victoria i will not start half your yeah i don't know you still got time i think tomorrow isn't it uh yeah tomorrow yeah are we talking about it now no we're going to talk about it after the break just wait hold you i know joseph o'brien is trying to um talk down his horses so they so they get the weight that he wants so pearl david's got a difficult well he's got to make a decision he's going to upset people and he's going to probably please some people so we'll discuss all of that next year on giddy up
Speaker 1Join the conversation. Text us on 0499 736 736 Live across Australia This is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall
Speaker 2Alright, we've got 10 minutes I've got to run through the next 10 minutes here, Louie Is that okay? And then Kingsley Bartholomew will be joining me for Beyond the Barriers Melbourne Cup Waits Like, will you start him regardless? Half yours?
Speaker 3Well, yeah, I mean, it's really unfortunate But these are the rules that have been put in place for the jockeys, haven't they? The weights have gone up The minimum's gone up, which has meant the max has gone up There obviously isn't much around from overseas Al Rifford didn't nominate So you're going to get 59 So it's looking like, I ran into David Hagen yesterday And started hurdling a little bit of abuse at him And he just said, mate, I'll do it Do you think that will work? I'm not sure Probably should have No, to be honest, he explained it well And I mean, you should get him on your show, Gareth No, we are Because we are I think they're just in a difficult position But it is disappointing because Like, we want And this is self-interest But we want the winner from the previous year To be competitive the next year, don't we? And I saw something on Twitter A guy put up a video With all the last 30 years Horses that have ran the next year with big weights And I mean, other than Mackay Bedeva, it's pretty
Speaker 2It doesn't happen Even the great Vinnie Rowan, those type of horses can't do it
Speaker 3But look, he's a two miler So, you know, as long as his form's good And he's healthy, happy and sound We don't have to tell you our place, but As long as the trainer doesn't stuff it up as well Caulfield Cups, his race Well, look, we're going to go to the Turnbull I think his run was very underrated I think everyone talking about how good Sir Delius went He went great, but I think our horse went as good
Speaker 2You reckon you can beat Sir Delius in a Turnbull?
Speaker 3Yeah, I do 2,000 metres at Flemington It's moving day, isn't it? And it's going to be moving day for our horse And we'll decide what we do after that
Speaker 2Yeah, I love the confidence there Yeah, well, you've got to have confidence Yeah, and so I guess it is difficult Because history tells you you can't win a Melbourne Cup But he's flying at the moment But that's handicap racing Can't eat history, Gary No, you can't I've tried And that would be something special if you can go back to back What are you going to do with the most talked about hype horse In the country, Yellow Jersey? Well, I copped it on Twitter
Speaker 3Saying he should have been in the Balaclava Cup today Yes, yes But I should have replied We've already got three of them at home So, look, he galloped well As discussed, he jarred up out of it We're going to accept him in the Rupert Clark this weekend Who rides? Daniel Stackhouse There you go 53 kilos And we'll see what barrier, et cetera, comes up But he galloped really nicely yesterday morning
Speaker 2It'd be great for stacking to win a group one
Speaker 3It would be, indeed Yeah, absolutely
Speaker 2So, you just don't know him, do you, really? Because you're going from 1700 to handicap 1400 Well, we're just trying to throw everyone off the scent That's all Yeah Do we have enough weight for age horses for the current racing calendar? Underwood stakes Seven stakes this weekend We had, of course, the The Kybie Diva last weekend Fee and Turnbull Martin Power, King Charles Cox Plate and Champions Day to come It's that middle part Outside of Grand Final Day for these horses The Underwood might have five or six in it The Seven Stakes might have five or six in it Who knows how many the Fee and will have Hopefully it's a match race between Pride of Jenny and Mr. Brightside And then you've got The King Charles will be a decent field The Martin Power And then the Turnbull So, it'll be interesting to see what the size of the fields are there
Speaker 4Yeah, exactly It probably comes back to our breeding industry a little bit there as well Because we put so much emphasis on these younger horses And these sprinting horses And they retire very quickly In my opinion So, maybe
Speaker 3Probably, again, most of these horses are in a couple of camps You know, like, I think if that was Yeah, I don't know
Speaker 2Spread out, yeah You never know What about Who wins the Underwood Stakes? Who's favourite? The favourite at the moment in the Underwood Stakes It's been changed The Cosmic Crusader 250
Speaker 3No, I like the Waller horses Lindemann? 1, 2, 3 Lindemann, Buckaroo Birdman 1, 2, 3 Disrespectful for the WA horse You sound like Mark Hunter No, no I just They look amazing I see those horses in the mornings at Flayden They look incredible
Speaker 2He was very good the other day, though
Speaker 4Cosmic Crusader
Speaker 2It'd be fascinating All of the criticism of Pike's Ride If Lindemann doesn't go to the Underwood Stakes How does William talk Bob into leading? Because he's the only leader Like, he can sit outside the leader And I know Bob doesn't like to lead But if Lindemann doesn't go to the Underwood Stakes Lindemann doesn't go there Birdman, Buckaroo can't lead Aliana is probably in Sydney Kingswood won't lead Piggyback Like, those horses Attrition So who's going to lead? There's no leader As rubbish talk until we see barriers anyway Kingswood could probably lead, I guess What about in the Sir Rupert Clark Stakes? Tom Kitten's the top weight He's a double-figure chance at 15 Lady Shenandoah, 4 Warnie, 7 Evaporate, 8 Angel Capital, $9 Regal Award, $9 Planet Red, $11 Sabarge, $11 Where is your horse? $26 $21 yellow jersey
Speaker 4I'm even further down I'm furiously refreshing the progressive acceptance Harry Jott, 51 I'm sitting on the edge of number 16
Speaker 3I mean, this is, I don't, who knows It's a Rupert Clark, which is a, you know There's horses right down on the weights And these are the races that throw up Interesting results I remember we nearly won this race with Dollar for Dollar Who wasn't a group one horse And he led and kicked and just got run down So it'd be interesting
Speaker 4We won it with Lord Luskin He was a group three slash listed horse
Speaker 2All right, then let's get through these text messages Hi Gareth, there's a lot of talk about transparency Why don't we have a horse's racing weight and current weight? That's from William
Speaker 3I'll tell you why I know they do it in Hong Kong Everyone's scales are so different Like, I could put a horse on the scales at our stable And then walk 40 meters to Troy's scale And there could be 10 kilos difference I think in Hong Kong, they all use the same setup And again, could it be paralysis by Over analysis to the punters?
Speaker 4And we did try it for a while at Moonee Valley I remember, it would have been 15 years ago That you walked on course and you weighed your horse And then it was recorded, but it didn't go anywhere
Speaker 2Morning boys, love the debate You could 100% go down a staying distance series For three-year-olds, similar to the Sydney Sprint Series Derby worth double points as the grand final Races in the weeks before The derby actually means something Rather than just 12 three-year-olds Running 14 second splits down the back
Speaker 4Who's that from?
Speaker 25-2-9
Speaker 4Oh, they read my Very good My piece of paper
Speaker 2G'day lads, the late, great Bart Cummings Would be rolling over in his grave With any talk of the derby distance being short In regards to Jamie But they wouldn't train horses like Bart used to
Speaker 3There was no Everest talk back then Would they have been against the concept of the Everest?
Speaker 4And in fairness, it's probably They're full of anabolics You were allowed to use anabolic steroids back then So that's not even an argument
Speaker 2The climate of racing in Australia Has changed owners want their investment They put in back quickly Would an idea be that a trainer could reduce fees For stays to encourage owners to be paid Patient and encourage more It's a great idea
Speaker 4But it's just as expensive to train a stayer As it is a spender
Speaker 3Yeah, and I mean Yeah, I'm not going to get down
Speaker 4We can't No You know
Speaker 3It's not a charity
Speaker 4No, we're not trying
Speaker 2We can't lose money training a horse Yeah I applaud Troy Causton's And what he just said About staying races and breeding stays No true words said Would love to win a Melbourne Cup It's my favourite race of the year Seven weeks to go What a great win last year Half yours, Calvin Great ride by Jamie Mellon
Speaker 3And the state of rest I tell you
Speaker 2He could be the next one Yes, yes
Speaker 4If it's not sold by the end of the day I'll go here I'll be disappointed
Speaker 2The annual discussion of the derby distance Is so boring Do we have to change every tradition? The Oaks has rarely mentioned The VRC should stand its ground Derby winners and competitors stand up That's from Dulcet
Speaker 3This is where people are getting a bit wrong It may not be the VRC's decision Yeah, exactly It may be to keep it But if they lose Group 1 status
Speaker 4And if it was the VRC's decision I would have heard from them by now And I haven't heard from any of them Because they know what I'm talking about Is the truth
Speaker 2Breeding is a ruffle Just like life Look at Secretary Great stay by champion Spreading side bowl ruler Gareth, can you get Troy To talk to the VRC So it doesn't take me 20 minutes To get a drink? I heard a few Like we are We've had a few stories like that Over the Like I I had Demi went with her Friend Sylvia They had no problem They were at rooftop And they said getting their drink Didn't take them that long They were in the VIP line No, no But in other parts of Flemington They do need to get better at it Like you can't be waiting That long There was a lot of social media About that Yeah Which I read quite a bit of it And I think they'll address it But they need to address it Pretty quickly And I think
Speaker 4With the new catering company Coming on board They're still learning
Speaker 2But it's been a long time now That catering company They need to get better No, they're just They're just new It's been for a No, no But it's been for the last two months They've had a three or four meeting That's not a long time
Speaker 3I think I think also They're getting compared a lot To the MRC Who have done a mighty job with In terms of prices and beer
Speaker 4But in fairness To the VRC They were probably They were coming off What was the crowd last year? I think it was like
Speaker 2Yeah, but they had Five or six thousand
Speaker 4And they had 13,000 this year
Speaker 2They probably didn't They do a great job The VRC But they would have learned A lot of lessons I would imagine there on Saturday And you can't compare The beer prices From the MRC to the VRC You should get someone on, Gareth We will The MRC have got Kylie's coming in, remember? Yes The MRC have got Several pups So they can do Probably better deals Yeah But Here we go Morning, gents Is it possible to introduce An incentive scheme For owners and breeders That includes the Derby? Increase the prize money Of the Derby But include it as a spring option In a three and four year old scheme Awesome solution Yeah, qualifying three year olds In the spring Golden Rose and Cornwall Corfew Guineas and Derby Qualify three year olds In the autumn as well Yeah Different races I like that idea
Speaker 4That's my That's my whole Three year old series idea
Speaker 2Hi, G The agenda is fantastic Enjoying it immensely Some ideas I have For the Derby Troy is so right In my view Make the Derby The centrepiece Dedicated to three year old Champions championship, market the Derby around three-year-olds, you could build a three-year-old championship with points accumulated, qualifying for the Derby. Bring back the Derby as a qualified for the Melbourne Cup. Win the Derby, dream of the Cup. My view, Derby would be like this. Derby distance, 2,400 metres, three-year-olds at set weights, $3 million in prize money and designated lead-up races and a bonus, et cetera. Brilliant. Really good, yeah. There's so many great ideas coming through. Gareth, Troy and Calvin, this segment is better than any advertising to educate owners in the complexity of training the elite horses. That's from Steve. If the guys could choose one stallion to breed a VRC Derby winner, what would it be? Stay abreast. We've both got one for sale. I don't need to breed one, I've got one. There's so many coming through. I feel, Calvin, we need to win a Bella Clava today. Have you got one? That's from Scott.
Speaker 3No, I forgot the nominations.
Speaker 2Most people don't have the patience and the pockets to weigh it. It's a society issue. It's a society issue as well. Instant success, instant results. How is Walsh Machine the price he is? Yeah, we'll get to it. I'm going to keep a few of those text messages because some of them are really long and delicate. Now, Ford, great supporters of Calvin and McAvoy Racing now and the Trainers Association.
Speaker 4Yeah, we're very lucky to, Ford are coming on as our major sponsor along with Sportsbet. So, just a fantastic partnership moving forward that we've worked on very hard over the last six months. Stephen Bell's done an amazing job, as have Jared and Cliffo from Ford and looking forward to everything that we can give our members going forward. Sensational.
Speaker 2You can mention Sportsbet as well if they're supporting the Trainers Association. Sportsbet, they are our major contributor. Yeah, bought by Brett365 and they do a wonderful job with Country Racing Victoria and all the money they put in. I'll tell you what, Gareth,
Speaker 3Victoria and I were lucky enough to go to the big annual unveiling of Ford's new products and there's a new car called the Bronco and it's a camping, you can sleep in it. It is really good. It suits you, I reckon, Gareth. I actually put your name down for one, Gareth. You've got to wait a little bit but I reckon with Troy and my push, we might be able to get you to the top of the list.
Speaker 2I'm more of a Ford focus man, I think. Me trying to reverse park a Ford Bronco might cause a traffic jam in Melbourne.
Speaker 3Maybe a Mustang for Gareth. No, I tell you, we were lucky enough just to get a Ford F-150 and they are beautiful beasts.
Speaker 2When we go shopping, Demi doesn't let me drive because she's embarrassed with my reverse parking. Hey, a lot of fun, boys. I think you are making a difference now. I think your passion about ideas, not everyone's going to agree with ideas that different people have but if their heart's in the right place because they want to make this industry better, debate and discussion needs to be encouraged and that's what we'll try and do on the Wednesday agenda and I think it's been your best one yet. Oh, thank you. Yep, and you want me to ask a few questions with Kingsley. What's the number one question you want me to ask?
Speaker 3No, I just, I'm really looking forward to listening. I think we should have been part of the interview. Yeah, I'm looking forward to listening to it. Well, you know what?
Speaker 2You can stay around if you want. No, we've got to meet with Ford. Yes. We actually have. Any winners? If I gave you $100 this week, what would you do with it? We'll start with you, Kelvin.
Speaker 3I just think today it's a good race at the end of the day. One day at a time, she's $12 to $15 and I think she's a nice each way bet. That would be all I've got this week. That's what Tony tells you. Don't leave the jersey out on Saturday. Yeah, one day at a time.
Speaker 4I've got a really nice staying horse running on Saturday having a bohemian boy. And I think if you had $50 each way on him, you'd be going okay.
Speaker 2Beautiful. Benny Allen riding?
Speaker 4Yes, he is. I'm glad you're loyal to his stable jockey. No, no, no. He's suspended.
Speaker 2Harry Coffey. Harry Coffey. He's a good jockey, that Harry Coffey. Yes, very good. Thanks, boys. There's Troy Cawson's Calvin McAvoy. That's the Wednesday agenda. Beyond the Barriers next with one of the most, well, he's the most recognisable name, I reckon, in Australian punting. Kingsley Bartholomew will be my special guest.
Speaker 1Join the conversation. Text us on 0499 736 736. Live across Australia, this is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 2Welcome back to Giddy Up. Gareth's awesome hand text line 0499 736 736 because if you've got a question for our next guest for Beyond the Barriers, send them through. Kingsley Bartholomew would have to be one of the most recognisable names in the Australian punting industry and he has been a pro punter for decades now. He's got the King's Zone, Wolf Den. He's been able to establish those businesses to help and educate young punters especially and it's great to have him as my special guest for Beyond the Barriers on this Wednesday morning. Kingsley, thanks very much for your time, mate.
Speaker 10Thanks for having me on, Gareth. Appreciate it.
Speaker 2I think everybody's looking forward to this. Now, if I'm a young man or a young woman that wants to be a professional punter, how do I go about doing that?
Speaker 10Rob a bank?
Speaker 2Yes, yes, yes. Is there still opportunities? Because there's a lot of people that love their racing and they see people that have been able to make a living on the punt. Is there still opportunities for someone to do that in today's world?
Speaker 10Of course, there's opportunities. It's obviously very hard. My advice if you want to be a professional punter for a living would be not to jump in. I don't want to be a professional punter like anything. It's a gradual process and it's about building up a bank so that you can get through that tough run. So if you do want to delve into the professional punting landscape, I would suggest just starting off by doing it on weekends and maybe just doing it on Saturdays and still having an income. When I started, I always had an income. I always still worked at the races and worked out at the Greyhounds as well and make sure I had an income coming in. So can you do it? Yes, of course you can. A lot of smart kids out there developing some really smart systems and automated betting and AI and all these great buzzwords. Of course you can do it. You've just got to have belief and that bank to keep you. The hard part really is keeping that bankroll going because I don't care who you are, you go through bad runs, and you've got to manage them.
Speaker 2When you fell in love with the punt, was it the love of the racing game or was it the love of the punt?
Speaker 10It was the love of the punt.
Speaker 2Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 10It was the thrill of backing a winner and doing the form and finding value and later on developing systems as well. So, mate, I love racing, but it's gambling for me. It's the thrill of backing a winner and I still love it today. I still love developing new ideas and new systems and working on things and analysis and trying to get money down nowadays, which is a hard task as well, but it's all part of the game. But, yeah, for me, and that's why I love the Melbourne Cup betting and the Call of the Cards so much because you can get on and it is that thrill of the punt and finding a winner and winning a heap on one race.
Speaker 2What's the greatest life lesson the punt's taught you?
Speaker 10Resilience. Just resilience to get through because 80% of my bets lose. 20% win. So you're wrong a lot more than you're right, but it's just it's self-belief and it's getting through those hard times and how to get through them and getting down and doing the work and doing the analysis and continually have to get up. So to be a successful punter, and I said this earlier, I don't care who you are, you do go through bad runs and there's a lot better judges out there than me. There's a lot smarter people out there. And there's a lot more successful punters out there than me as well. But one thing that I have got is enormous belief in my own ability to get out of a hole. And that doesn't mean on a day. It means getting out of a bad run and managing that situation in a logical way, doing the work that I need to do. And that might mean taking a break as well for a month or two and recalibrating the model or the system or the way I'm betting and looking back at it. But it's taught me resilience and it's taught me you can get out of, you can get out of anything and everything's not too bad. Like we have a bad day on the punt. We think, oh, the world's ended, but it's not really the end of the day. And that's why there's so many gambling messages out there nowadays. And one of the ones that I love is there's no last race because it's so true. Like we get so caught up in the day of winning and losing and you're in a hole and you've got to get out that day. But just take a breath and get through. Just get through to the next day and then it all starts again. So I'm punting. I've been punting seven days a week for the last, I don't know, I'm 51 now, probably like 25, 30 years I've been going seven days a week. So, you know, it can wear you down, but you just need to keep moving forward with it and having belief in yourself if you've got that bankroll as well, which we just talked about, which is the hard part for, it's the hard part is managing the bankroll a lot of the time. Even if you have it, if you have a winning system, you're still going to have that. And with the cost of living now, you're still going to have that big downturn. And that's the real hard part for people coming through nowadays is that bankroll management. And that's the question I do get asked the most is about staking.
Speaker 2What about, what's the longest break that you've had?
Speaker 10Probably, I think it was about 15 years ago. I took two or three months off. And I just felt I wasn't at the time, my model wasn't good enough. work on the form and work on the model and get it better. months when i say i took two months off i was still working but i was just working on the form and i didn't bet um that's probably the only time where i haven't i've really taken a a period away from betting and it was funny actually is it is amazing how clear my head became and how the clarity that i had during that two or three month period and i thought to myself is is this how is this how normal people sort of feel when when you don't have because i bet on everything i've been on sport i've had a racing i'm betting every state and it's just go go go all the time and i thought is this sort of how normal people feel when they don't have the stress of gambling all
Speaker 2the time and it it was a different feeling no any and like i've listened to you speak on a host of occasions i've been lucky enough to interview you on a few times um and what i think that separates you from others is that and i don't want to get too spiritual here um but you do have that belief and it's the positive outlook and it's the positive outlook and it's the positive outlook that you have and i don't know if you visualize it or is that it's that feeling that you believe that you deserve to to be a winner and then even if it's not going your way you'll be able to to get the the job done eventually and i think that's it and i've had like i can i've had that from a personal perspective that's been my greatest challenge in a way from a to you can to be a good pun but to actually believe that you deserve that you know the money coming your way like i think that's an art when it's it's not an art but it's a it's a it's an ability that you re if you don't have that that you really need to work on it to be successful at this game well i don't i don't think it's um it's just in
Speaker 10punting it it's in life like you've you've you've got a but it's not so much i believe i deserve it it's it's it's i believe that it'll turn it's i believe when you do the work when you really really do the work on anything and you're prepared and you know what you should be getting in return for what you you're doing it does give you enormous belief that i've always had an enormous belief that i'm going to win because if you if you have a real understanding of gambling and you know how to gamble and that's what's lost a little bit nowadays is that real education of actual gambling and and the figures everyone's so caught up in what's going to win but i've seen like if if you're a really good judge and you don't know how to gamble if you're a great form judge but you don't know how to gamble you won't win long term but if you're if you're a really bad judge or you do know form at all but you do know how to gamble you're a much much better chance so what gives me that belief just coming back to what you're saying gary you're a really good judge if you're a really good judge you're a much much better chance so what gives me that belief just coming back to if you're a really good judge you're a much much better chance so what gives me that belief just coming back to if you're a really good judge you're a much much better chance so what gives me that belief just coming back to if you're a really good judge you're a much much better chance so what gives me that belief just coming back to what you're saying gareth what gives me that belief is a lot of the back analysis and a lot i know i know how much work i've put is a lot of the back analysis and a lot i know i know how much work i've put is a lot of the back analysis and a lot i know i know how much work i've put into into into getting what's in front of me the form getting what's in front of me the form getting what's in front of me the form that i'm betting off i know what the that i'm betting off i know what the that i'm betting off i know what the form's done in the past form's done in the past form's done in the past i know that i'm going through a bad run i know that i'm going through a bad run i know that i'm going through a bad run because i've seen it in the data because i've seen it in the data because i've seen it in the data previously previously previously i know this is just a bad run and i've i know this is just a bad run and i've i know this is just a bad run and i've just got to get through it just got to get through it just got to get through it what is hard is when what is hard is what is hard is when what is hard is what is hard is when what is hard is when you have to reinvent yourself when you have to reinvent yourself when you have to reinvent yourself and by that i mean the market changes and by that i mean the market changes and by that i mean the market changes or or or a lot of your form factors people have a lot of your form factors people have have cottoned on to might be back in the day um mark reid and dominic byrne were extremely you know geniuses at ratings and that was back in the 80s and they would have made a lot of money through that period and then the 90s came and people sort of cottoned onto a bit and by 2000s the edge had sort of gone and now that the ratings edge has gone but what is hard is reinventing yourself and you've got to keep up with new technology and that just comes back to a work ethic and also a belief that you can do it and not getting too bogged down in your ways now it's ai what you know what does that hold or new data coming in it's sectionals back upon a time now it's a lot of um you know it might be video analysis or or updated measures stride length and all this sort of stuff that people are coming coming up with new measures so you've got to keep on top of it and if you do find new angles that is what gives you the belief and and the confidence to keep going if the analysis that you look back and go this is this is just a bad run i i will get through it and you know i embrace it as well i i i i half love the bad i don't know if it's the sickness i've got but i half i love the bad runs and the challenges because i think no one else is going to get through this no one else is going to get through this and i am going to get through it and i am going to come through the other side and when you do what a great feeling it is yeah
Speaker 2you embrace the storm or that famous grab from the boxing coach you're a firefighter and the fire at the moment you get through this away you go like i'm fascinated just hearing you then like how many times in so you're 51 now you've been um gambling for what more than four decades now three and a half decades how many times have you reinvented yourself in that time
Speaker 10oh plenty yeah plenty i'm always looking for new i'm always looking for new techniques i'm always looking for new data and it doesn't matter if i'm having a good run or a bad run i always i always think i can get better and i always i never think i'm having a good run even when i am having a good run and i look back and go she's like she's all you know i was betting up then she was i was having a good run when i'm inside of it i still think i'm not doing i'm not doing well enough not in a bad way but just in a way that i'm always trying to push forward and always trying trying to get better so i'm trying to be honest with you and but the the big sort of change that i made was doing a lot a lot more things publicly and sharing my information and educating people starting with wolfden and and that was a way of sort of reinventing myself but it's fun like doing different things it's fun in a way and after you've been gambling that long just sitting in front of a computer for you know 20 years it's it's fun to do different things and i know that like one day and i love what i do so it's fun it's not work it's just it's it's exploring different avenues and get finding different techniques and meeting different people it's this job this job is
Speaker 2amazing it's so much fun and you wake up every day and it doesn't matter if there's a main in atari or wodonga or or you got midweek racing today and you're trying to beat the market work out the track conditions the scratchings and then that thrill of finding a winner or getting the quality or then there's no drug like it really back in winners and um we're all got that bug basically yeah it never gets boring back in a winner doesn't it hey i've got to take a break kingsley bartholomew is my special guest for beyond the barriers um i'll get to your questions i'll promise you i'll get to your questions towards the back end of this interview kingsley's with us until around 10 past 10 i reckon then you've got to go mate but we appreciate you coming on giddy up we'll take a break we'll come back with more of kingsley bartholomew for beyond the barriers on this wednesday
Speaker 1join the conversation text us on 0 4 9 7 3 6 7 3 6 live across australia this is giddy up with
Speaker 2gareth hall welcome back to giddy up all thanks to bet 365 kingsley bartholomew is my special guest here for beyond the barriers um king who were your mentors growing up uh my first job in
Speaker 10the game uh was with warren woodcock yeah the late warren woodcock um and then i moved my my first um job with him was when i was 17. so i learned a fair bit with him but then i moved um with my brother sean got his license and that's where i really learned a lot from sean yeah especially around around the gambling side around how important it is to be um either backing horses at the right price or laying horses as short and how important percentages are and uh reading the market as well so i really learned a lot um from him around around the gambling side of the game and moving moving further on from that around the form side i learned a lot from daniel o sullivan around the rating side of things um later on he was he very kindly taught me a lot about um rating horses and you know the importance of times in
Speaker 2racing um there's a question i get asked a lot about your brother sean like describe sean for us
Speaker 10oh man sean's a genius yeah sean's an he's an absolute genius and um i bet with him through um my younger days well i worked for him as a bookie um and then he uh he went and worked up for mark reed up in in darwin for a while and then came back i think he got his license again it's a long time ago now i'm just trying to remember but we punted very successfully together um off the back of a um a model that he developed and we had some great times together um on track and then and then off track as well once betfair came came uh available and we left the race course because they wouldn't let us look at betfair anymore can you believe that that they wouldn't let us look at betfair and look where betfair sort of is now but back when it first came out the the authorities didn't want us looking at betfair at all so we left the track um and worked together out of an office and punted together very successfully and then went her own way. But, no, Sean's a genius. He's a – he loves a punt probably more than what I do. So it's in the blood. Is he still punt today? Yeah, he still goes hard. Yeah. Yeah. No, he's still betting up. Yeah, absolutely.
Speaker 2You should get the King and Sean back. That would be just for one Saturday on the Wolf Den. That would be – YouTube numbers will just go through the roof, King.
Speaker 10Well, he's got some great stories. That's for sure.
Speaker 2Was there a time in your early days that you were punting? And I remember you telling me that you used to do your bank and then you learnt lessons from that. But was there a time where you thought, well, I don't know if this is for me and then it's getting too hard?
Speaker 10Very early, before I sort of kicked – I went and – I was joking with someone earlier. I've got an advanced diploma in business and marketing. I went and did a course. I went and did a course when I was 20 years old, a two- or three-year course. And then I guess I thought racing really wasn't for me. And then I tried to get a job in an accountancy firm, believe it or not, and I didn't get the job, thankfully. And then I went back to the track and started working at the track again. But apart from that, no, I never thought that it really wasn't for me because I saw the money that I could make elsewhere by working for somebody else and I saw the money that I could make on track, one, for working for other bookies or punters and, two, the money that was just flying around back then. It was very different on track where you saw – you actually saw the cash and you saw the money that you could make and you saw the money that other people were making and you could learn from other people. And so I saw the opportunity. I saw the opportunity much greater on the racetrack than I did working, you know, in a corporate job or working for somebody else. But apart from that, no, I've never looked. And one of the reasons why is because it's so hard to learn a craft as well and this is the only one that I know and it's probably, I don't know, it takes so long to do anything. Yeah, I could go and learn something else but I love it and I don't want to do anything else really.
Speaker 2I don't know if I could. No, why would you want to do anything else? What's been the most significant win of your career? Might be not the biggest win but the most significant win.
Speaker 10The most significant wins of my career would have been early on for sure. When I was probably 22, 23 and I hit two superfectors in one week. A superfector, we don't have them nowadays but that was a pick in one race, picked the first six in order. And we used to have a, there used to be a lot of big jackpots back there where no one would get it and 100,000 or 200,000 would roll over and all the guys on track, all the pros on track would put in, you know, a certain amount. I might put in 2,000 or 3,000 and we'd get, we'd get a pool together of say 20,000 and we'd play the superfector. Anyway, we hit two of them in one week and I won a couple of hundred thousand. So that gave me the kick bank-wise. So that would definitely be the most significant wins in my career, I'd say for sure.
Speaker 2A lot of text messages coming through. We're going to take a break on the other side of it. It's just going to, I'm going to be a curious punter king and I'm going to use your knowledge and expertise to help all of us out regarding this spring carnival. And I think there's going to be a lot of people that will enjoy the next 30 minutes or so. So we'll just concentrate on the punt, the way you go about it. And there's so, talking about reinventing yourself, like even the whirlpool coming in, like how do you use that to your advantage? Because it's in now, we're going to live with it. So yeah, there's, there's a few other different types of factors that I want to ask you about as well regarding the punt. So more from Kingsley Bethomu for Beyond the Barriers coming up. Next year on Giddy Up.

Speaker 2Welcome back to Giddy Up. My special guest is Kingsley Bethomu, of course for Beyond the Barriers, the pro punter that has become the biggest, like I think he's the face of pro punting or the, the face of punting in this country. And it's great to have him on the show. King, the staking plan, obviously it's the most common question that you get asked. And there's a host of questions coming through on the Gareth's Horse and Hound text line today. So if you've got, if you're, say if you've got a thousand dollars to bet a month or a thousand a year, so how would you stake it? Is it 10%? Is it 5% of your bank?
Speaker 10Yeah, it's a great question. So let's just work off, say you've got a thousand dollars for the month. It depends how many days, days you're betting really. I would I would break it down. If I had a thousand, the key to any staking plan is staying in the game. If, if you go through a bad run. So if you've got a thousand dollars for for the month, I would break it down into, and you only bet on Saturdays. I would break it down into 250, $250 per for the first Saturday. Yeah.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 10And then, I would, I always say I bet to win a certain amount and I have a certain amount on the horse. So depending on how much you've got, you might be, you might bet to win and you can change these, these, these numbers according to your bank, obviously, and according to how much you want to win on favorites and how much you want to win on roughies. But basically I bet to win a certain amount and I have a maximum bet amount and a maximum race amount, which is usually the better amount that's I know. That's a little bit confusing, but just using that example, say you've got 250 bucks to bet with on a Saturday, I would bet to win, say $50 and my maximum bet might be $20 for example. Yeah. So for horses is 10, 10 to one you're having, you're having $5 on that horse, but you can change it as well. You, you might say, I want to bet to win a hundred dollars cause I want to win more if I find a $10, 20 to one winner. So then your maximum bets a hundred dollars, but sorry, you bet to win amounts a hundred dollars, but your maximum bet amount, just leave, leave it the same at $20. So in that scenario, you'd have $10 on the horse instead of 20. But the key with any staking plan is staying in the game. So when you don't want to knock yourself out halfway through the day, especially when you've got good bets coming up later in the day, and you don't want to knock yourself out for the month as well, halfway through the month. So it might look like you're betting too small, but there's plenty of years left left on your life. And there's plenty of races. And it's about sort of just about getting through it.
Speaker 2I think that's a great example because we have the Wednesday agenda with Troy Coulson's and Calvin McAvoy. And that segment is designed to educate the punters as well through a trainer's eyes. So you can have your staking plan and you might think half yours is the greatest bet ever. Um, and Calvin McAvoy and your bet, and he gets B or he's disappointing. You put all your most of your stake on it because you thought he was just unbeatable, but then he comes back with a virus or that. It's like, it's out of your control as a punter. So you might be doing everything right, but it doesn't go your way. And the luck's not on your side. And I guess that's why you have to have a really strong staking plan where you do have to have a staking plan because you've got to take into those variables. It's not going to be your fault. If you lose some of the time,
Speaker 10exactly. And everything's just an edge. At the end of the day, we think, oh, you know, this is a moral, this can't get beat, but everything can get beat and everything's just an edge, whether it be a, you know, a 10% edge, 20% edge, 30%, one or two or 3% edge half yours on the weekend. Blah, blah, blah. It might be, you know, it might be $6 and, but it's a true chances $4.60, or it might be $2 and it's true chances $1.70. You're never really going to get big scenarios where it's a $3 chance, but it's a bit, you know, you're getting $3, about $1.50 chance. The bookies just don't allow that. So as I said, 80% of my bets lose. So it's really, really important that it's really, really important that you do get that staking, right. And you just, and you view it as it's just another bet. Yeah. It's not, don't get so emotionally caught up in the fact that, you know, I think this is going to win so much and when it doesn't get beat or you're unlucky luck as a, you know, beautiful way of evening out in the end. And if you get all the other things, right, like your selection process and your staking, then you do finish in front. And obviously the odds that you're taking as well, extremely important and, and, and luck, good luck, bad luck, good luck, bad luck at the end of the day, just it does. We, we tend to focus on the negative of the bad luck or how unlucky was I, how unlucky was I, but the truth is probably we forget the good luck parts and, and, and remember the bad luck parts and then, and get down on herself a little bit too much, but it does even out.
Speaker 2King. How important is delegation to being a successful punter? I've gone down the method where I don't do necessarily all the form myself. I've got friends and I turn to, I analyze the markets. I listened to shows like giddy up and then I bring all that information together and then make my assessment, but mainly I'm watching the markets and then investing. Um, what's your philosophy with all of that learning how to delegate and, um, not necessarily just following your own form, getting other information from different sources. I guess you just mentioned Daniel O'Sullivan, so that would be the perfect. example there.
Speaker 10i think it's how you compile it yeah i think that i don't think anything should overrule sort of it depends and everyone's different and there's so many different ways to do it and i mean i could create a system where i just completely throw everything out that that that i ever thought and okay i'm just going to get everybody's information um and i had actually on wolfden last week i had a guy asking me he said he bought 15 or 20 subscriptions one of them was the king zone but um he he buys 15 or 20 subscriptions he's saying i think i've got too many subscriptions you know what should i do and i came up with like a point system for him where you allocate x amount of points uh for certain tipsters or or um or information that he's getting based on their past results so really it really comes down to what what you think the tipster or the piece of information is contributing to your overall system if somebody isn't if you don't know the answer to that it's very hard to know it's very hard to know what sort of weight to put on it really if you don't know how much it's contributing to your overall system then you're just going by feel and and you should probably be keeping some sort of records of it who's the um you know who are the better tipsters if that's too hard i'll just put an equal weight on it and sort of i don't think one should overrule the other but i i think outside information if if you handle it correctly is great because there's so many different views in the game and that there's so many you know smart punters in the in the media now they're
Speaker 2offering their information for free do you factor in trainer information um and what kind of rating do you put the training information if you do take that in um how hard no i i don't take it i don't
Speaker 10take any jockey information or trainer information uh in at all i find i find that when i listen to them trainers or jockeys they just tend to be tipping their own horse yeah a lot which which i understand and they i don't feel that they've got the majority of if trainers and jockeys have got a full view of the field and what they're up against they know their horse but they don't know the opposition as well as sort of what i would so if it was available in in a data form and you could give me the the tips or the information that you've compiled over the last two two three four years with the trainers i'd like to go and have a look at it but yeah my feel is and and they've got to be tipping their own as well they can't come on and say i think this horse is he's not hasn't worked well you don't hear that very often it hasn't worked well and i know i don't like its chances today so we can't back half the
Speaker 2field no um we're going to take a break we're going to come back with more of your questions next this is beyond the barriers on giddyup our special guest is kingsley bartholomew
Speaker 1join the conversation text us on oh four double nine seven three six seven three six live across
Speaker 2australia this is giddyup with gareth hall welcome back to giddyup kingsley bartholomew is my special guest for beyond the barriers um the text messages are flying through on the garage source and our text line this is a statement agree a break week or more reset the brain like turning off the computer punting all poker um hey kingsley i'm a big on the uk races they use fsp percentage which is the finishing speed percentage on most of their races uh race form that i've started to implement this into my form is this something that you look at or have heard of something i've found very helpful that's from jay so yeah finishing speed percentage is the finishing speed percentage
Speaker 10you mean finishing speed percentage i'm not really familiar with finishing speed percentage but i know in the uk they're just starting to um introduce sectionals into their data so it's obviously something to do with uh with the with the finishing speed as a um as a percentage so maybe it's how much the ground the horse made up on the field yeah um i i would look at how accurate that data is is coming in because it's just being introduced so with any new data it's very hard to know whether it will add value straight away without having a backlog of testing so i wonder if there's any history
Speaker 2i think it's something with the average speed and they can measure that with the closing sectional so it brings like the efficiency of the race the pace etc so yeah it is a little complicated but um it's there's always these different tools and philosophies that we learn about all the time so yeah i think it's going to be interesting to see if we can make it work and we'll find a winner merv says can you please ask the king what is one edge in punting that he used to take advantage of
Speaker 10but due to the changing punting landscape is no longer uh i would probably say speed rate speed ratings um definitely are no longer available no longer there's not not a great edge in speed ratings anymore because they're so widely widely publicized and even further than that sectionals nowadays like the last 200 meter sectionals used to be a big advantage and now the edge in them has gone as well as you know you we see um vincent cardi and and and all these great um analysts coming on and talking about last you know the sectionals and the speed and they went hard early and and and slower late so yeah i'd i'd say anything that's sort of pub really publicly available now the edge goes very quickly on
Speaker 2two things to propose to kingsley his thoughts on the whirlpool and how you how you yeah how do you become like we've had a lot of questions come through over the last six months regarding the whirlpool and um obviously you can if you're a saturday punter if you're backing roughies you bet best tote um if you're backing favors you've got to back back them on the fixed odds really don't you these days but i love your thoughts sorry on the whirlpool yeah well
Speaker 10everything comes back down to percentages doesn't it and it's not it's not a great look for racing when it's not it's not a great look for racing when it's not it's not a good look for racing when the fixed odds bookies are betting two dollars and the and the whirlpool's paying a dollar forty or a dollar fifty on the tote and a lot of the time the the roughies aren't you know they're just around about the price i think we had a situation which everyone was you know very excited about with gold trick one about two years ago or three years ago when the whirlpool came in and and paid overs and everyone remembers that one but everything comes back to percentages in the end and the whirlpool's got extra percent percentage in it and that's why we see these favorites plus rounding and that's why we see these um horses playing short i'm excited about more money in a pool no not really when when the takeout's so big the majority of the money you know is coming from overseas so it just comes back down to take out really so i don't get excited by something that offers very very little value and to me the world
Speaker 2pool offers very little value hopefully they get it right with the national tote um and um what do you make of that then and what would your advice be to people i think it's a great i i i'm pro
Speaker 10national tote big time um as long as it's promoted and i have i've seen very little promotion about it i'm not sure when it's when it's going to start well i think it's october but i i think there's
Speaker 2they've they've got to tick off a few more boxes that's taking a little bit of time and i think it's a little political as well so that's maybe why we haven't heard so much about it um in recent times so yeah that's a good point i think it's a little political as well so that's maybe why we haven't heard so much about it um in recent times so yeah it's never easy what a world we're talking something going on what about um but yeah sorry
Speaker 10yeah sorry i think it's a great i think it's a great opportunity to to build those totes pools back up because at the moment we've we've got three totes and and punters can't bet with confidence into them um via exotics or win or place because the pools are just so small nowadays so i think it's a great i think it's a great opportunity to build those pools back up um once everything's in place and and tabco have a real desire to grow that it'd be great to see some some carryovers and some promotions and some and some lower percentage markets that really drive and stimulate turnover and create interest especially in those the big sixes or the superfectors and things like that
Speaker 2that i talked about earlier um how do you go back analyzing losing bets well that's the key the the
Speaker 10key is to analyze sort of where where you lost so yeah i'll look back as been through good runs and bad runs and all the time i'll analyze them sort of as a whole the winning bets and the losing bets and working out whether you know there's a section of those bets where i'm not not as profitable it might be on first up horses or it might be on it might be in a certain price range where i'm overstaking horses over 10 to 1 for example it might be nowadays there's not as much value in favorites as there used to be so i might go back and have a look at odds on favorites whether i'm i need to be harsher and i need a bigger overlay whether to back those horses also look when like i'm putting in a lot of um effort into when i bet at the moment whether i'm i'm betting as soon as the markets come out with a smaller state or should i wait till 9 00 a.m when the minimum bet kicks in or should i just not bet with bookies at all and just bet on betfair or should i wait till sort of 10 minutes to go and what type type of bet sort of goes into into those different brackets so yeah analyze
Speaker 2this in every way is extremely that is intriguing i'm going to take one more break and then after that we've got another 10 minutes with the king a lot of love for the king on our text message
Speaker 1line on the garage source and our text live on rsn and sen track this
Speaker 2This is Giddy Up with Gareth Horn. Here's my special guest here on Giddy Up Beyond the Barriers. Kings, we're going to have quick hands here because I've got so many questions. I'm going to try and get through as many as I can in the next 10 or so minutes. Hi, Gary. Can you please ask Kingsley's opinion on betting in Cups futures and the market percentage put up now and whether he thinks it's worthwhile? It seems that the corporate bookies are much more on the ball than they used to be. You have to start late and watch races live to be ahead of the curve. I managed to get Highwayman at the hundreds, but it was wound in within minutes. Previously, you would have 12 hours or so before the market reacted. Your thoughts there, King?
Speaker 10Yeah, I agree. Corporate bookies are getting a lot smarter. There's a lot of percentage in those futures markets. I don't bet into them. And even if I could get on, I wouldn't do it anyway because you're just risking too much. I'd rather wait till the day of the race.
Speaker 2Yeah, I'm like even today from a moment. From an emotional perspective, I like the Trotter that we're close to on Giddy Up, Wicked Confession. The fixed odds came out with the tab, which always first about an hour and a half ago. I've been waiting all day and I must have got, and it's $10. And before you know it into $3, $2.40, and then $2.40. And I missed that after I waited for a day and a half basically waiting for the fixed odds to come up. And then it just ruins your day, really. It just breaks your heart. But you've got to get over it and you've got to let it go. But it's hard to let go. The most famous and successful punter in the US in the 1920s and 30s said, pick them to win, back them to place. What do you think of that philosophy?
Speaker 10Pick them to win, back them to place. Yeah, I mean, yeah, it all comes down to the odds. I don't bet for the place, but I'm not saying I shouldn't bet for the place. But back in the day, in each way, bet was a great bet because you got a quarter of the odds for the place. But nowadays, the way the corporates have structured their place odds, it's more like a fifth. And they... It goes in line with the field size. And, you know, if there's a big field, you'll get a quarter. So, yeah, I love backing a roughy for a place. Yeah. What about... I don't know about the favourites for a place, but a roughy for a place I think is a good bet.
Speaker 2The percentages are so high these days. How do you work them to your advantage? Or like, how do you analyse these markets so you can make money?
Speaker 10Well, you've just got to pick the eyes out of it. I used to back sort of three or four race. But the real trouble is what the... Trotter. You just described $10 into $3 without... And you were ready and you wanted to get on.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 10That is the real problem why there isn't so much value in the market anymore because there's a lot of smart people that are just betting as soon as the market goes up, bang. They're putting up 130% and then smart punters are coming in and knocking it into shape. And it's still remaining 125 to 130%. And then, you know, come race day, you've got to beat that 125 pretty set market. So, there just aren't as many holes in it. I'm not to say there aren't any. But there just aren't as many. So, you've got to be more selective about your bets than you used to be. Be patient. Yeah. I mean, you've got to be patient. You've got to pick your chances and wait till there is a real, you know, really good overlay. And I often say don't have any lazy bets. Don't back it just because, you know, I want to be on this horse type thing and I don't think it's a good bet. Just make sure your bets are all... You're all happy with them come jump time.
Speaker 2King, it's taken me around four. Four years and about 40,000 of losses to finally build a system that works. And I'm starting to become profitable most weeks. My issue is controlling or stopping the need to regain that initial investment at speed. How do you harness these psychological hurdles of being behind? That is a terrific question.
Speaker 10Yeah. Firstly, well done on building the system and getting the system to where it is being profitable. But it's about looking forward. You don't want to go back. And one thing when I was coming through, and it's still in my mind, I don't want to go back to sort of where I was. And you don't, it's so hard to build up to where you've got. It's so hard to build up to where you've got. So just keep looking forward. Always look forward whether you've had a bad day or a good day. Always look forward. And it's about the next day because you can be a good pundit for a year or two years and you have one bad day and you can wipe the whole thing out. So it's about looking forward, keeping your head and not getting too greedy as well. And if you are having a good run, Yeah. Yeah. If you are having a good run, don't get too overconfident and start chipping up and thinking that you can't, you know, you've got the game whacked because it'll whack you back in the face pretty hard. So it's just about consistency and being happy with where you're at and also building up slowly. If you want to build an increase by five percent, you have a winning week, increase by another five percent. Slowly, slowly. It's about staying in the game.
Speaker 2Kingsley, what about any near misses and what it may have cost you? A photo going the wrong way, a horse that's been held. Maybe an unlucky runner. That's a good question from Carl.
Speaker 10Yeah, I mean, it happens every day, but I just put them out of my head and just go on to the next race and don't worry about it too much. I'm sure, I mean, there's been a heap of them, especially in the football. I bet a lot on the NRL and the refereeing decisions and you get done in the last minute. And I also had a big bet on Brisbane when they got beaten by North Queensland and JT kicked that field goal.
Speaker 2Oh, no.
Speaker 10Right at the end and Ben Hunt knocked the ball on. But, you know, I don't know. You just, it's all part of the torture that we love and we just move on and you worry about the next race. I never look back.
Speaker 2Yeah. Hi, Gareth. It is my belief that every fixed odds market should have a percentage associated with it. I think this should be legalised. Can you get Kingsley's thoughts on how important this is? That's from Rob.
Speaker 10Yeah, I think I agree. And I think if it does, it's teaching people about percentages. Well, I think it's a great idea. And another idea, I won't go into. But another idea I had was taxation associated with percentage. So the bookies that are prepared to bet lower percentage are paying less of tax than the ones that are putting up high percentage. Percentage is huge.
Speaker 2That's just common sense. And that should happen too. Reward the bookmakers that are helping out the punters. And the governments are going to make more money if they do that anyway. What's your favourite, how do I, I'll summarise this. What is your favourite? What's your favourite area to bet in? Is it maidens? Is it metro meetings? Is it benchmark 58s? Is it horses resuming from a spell? Is it first starters?
Speaker 10What's your go-to? It's probably on tracks that are biased, I would say. Tracks that favour leaders I've had the best results at. So back in the day, it used to be Caulfield and Rose Hill were extremely leaderish. So it'd be tracks. Where you can get on, where I find bias is that, I would say, the best. Like Moonee Valley was another good one when it's leaderish. Or sometimes the inside might be off at Morfaville or that sort of thing. So it's on biased tracks that I'll have the best results, I think, a lot of the time.
Speaker 2Who says tracks that aren't fair aren't good for racing? Kingsley. Many successful punters stress the importance of feeding the market back into your analysis. To what extent should you do this when you are confident? Are you confident of your own analysis when the market disagrees?
Speaker 10Yeah, a lot of people say they feed the market back into their models. And what that means, it's mainly designed for tote bedding a lot where they'll feed the market back in. But all it is doing is sort of smoothing out your own market. And I think it's a great idea. There's no doubt about that because it's not going to change your opinion. It's just going. It's going to smooth it out and average it out. So you might have a horse that you mark $3 that's $20. And that might, depending on what weighting you put it, might end up around $10, for example. And it's not a $3 chance. And if your form's good, it's not a $20 chance. So it's sort of making your market more realistic. So I do think it's a great idea.
Speaker 2Two more questions for you, Kingsley. I like this one. Is keying rising value at the moment at $1.50?
Speaker 10Is anything ever valued at $1.50 nowadays? Well, some say. Especially these far out from the road.
Speaker 2I saw a few. Brad Davidson on Tabby said that $1.50 is value if you think it's $1.20.
Speaker 10Do you get your money back? If he doesn't come and he doesn't run, do you get your money back? That's the question. I mean, if you knew he was going to be behind the barriers and he was fit and he was healthy, I think he's a genuine sort of, he's a genuine falls on chance, judging by the way. The way he won first up, he was awesome, wasn't he? He looks a genuine falls on chance and I don't think autumn glow can get near him. But the risk is he's not coming or he gets sick or something like that and then he doesn't show up. So I'd rather take, I don't know if you get your money back. I know you did last year, I think. But I'd rather take $1.25 or $1.30 and know he's behind the barriers and he's fit and well than $1.50 right now.
Speaker 2When do you start doing your Melbourne Cup form for the call of the card? Is it when the weights come out? On Thursday, which is tomorrow, of course.
Speaker 10Yeah, I'll start having a look once the weights come out. I saw it defiantly won really well over in France and I watched Aliana the other day. So there's, yeah, I've just been having a look, but yeah, I haven't got too much into it at the moment. Yeah, once the weights come out and the Turnbull was a really good guide last year with half yours, Sir Delius, half yours. That was a really, really high rating race. So I'm really interested in the Turnbulls. and seeing the times out of it and seeing the runs out of it. But, yeah, the Maccabi Diva was a good one. Half Yours was a good run on the weekend as well. Lisa wants to know if you're married. Yeah, married with two kids.
Speaker 2Sorry, Lisa. Been married for 23 years. And how do you deal with, yeah, like, obviously she loves the, like there's a few text messages that have come through today, trying to educate your partner about the punt as well. So they let you bet.
Speaker 10Oh, that's, yeah, that's, yeah. I don't think there can be two in one household. I don't try and educate Ainsley about the punt at all. She sort of lets me do my own thing. And as long as, like, don't come home with a bad head on and start complaining, she's fine sort of thing.
Speaker 2Each way trifectas, Quinella, or you're just a straight-out punter?
Speaker 10I'm just a straight-out punter these days. But I'd love, like, if the Whirlpool takes off, not the Whirlpool, the National Tote takes off and those pools get big, and I'll definitely look at, look at playing trifectas. It's just so hard now because the pools are so small. Yeah. Hey, any winners king today? Yeah, I liked a race in Balaclava, believe it or not, later. There was two horses that were both around $7 or $8. In race nine, number two, Bootlegger, and number nine, Snoopy Now. I thought that race had a bit of value. I've only had one early bet at Caulfield, the favourite in race six. Number 11, Cabriolet, I took around $2.30. Yeah, about it. Yeah, I thought it looked a pretty hard day today.
Speaker 2Hey, on behalf of everyone here, mate, we appreciate you coming on. This conversation, we all love, as punters, we love your stories. The last thing, I promise this to the last one, what's the biggest win that you've ever had? You've probably already told us this, I reckon.
Speaker 10The biggest win I had was when the Roosters won the 2018 Premiership, I think it was, against Melbourne Storm. So that's the biggest win I've ever had. On a horse, the biggest win I've had was when Shocking won the Melbourne Cup, back in 2007, I think.
Speaker 2Yeah, three-way without cover, what were you thinking, midway?
Speaker 10I was thinking he was gone.
Speaker 2Yeah, what a run that was.
Speaker 10Yeah, absolutely.
Speaker 2And King's Zone and Wolf Den, how did we get involved?
Speaker 10Yeah, King's Zone, go and sign up. It's free to sign up, theking.zone. If you want to sign up to Wolf Den, just get into the app store, type in Wolf Den and download the app and get on there and meet other punters, get into the community, have a bit of fun and share some knowledge. Pick up some knowledge, share some knowledge, have some fun and let's go, let's back a winner.
Speaker 2Yeah, love your work, mate. We appreciate you coming on and telling your story as well. We could speak all day, we could go for hours and hours, but we appreciate you giving us a little bit of time on this Wednesday.
Speaker 10Any time. Thanks, Gareth.
Speaker 2Kingsley Bartholomew, what a star he is. And punters just love listening to other punters and he was exceptional today. There's a heap of text messages coming through today, Paulie, do you want to take a break? And we're going to spend five minutes on reading out a few text messages again. Most of them were for King.
Speaker 6Yes, let's do it, Gareth, let's do it.
Speaker 2There's a few coming through that I can answer as well, so we'll do that straight after this.
Speaker 1Join the conversation. Text us on 0499 736 736. Live across Australia, this is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 2Love it, Gareth Hall. We see plenty of text messages coming through. Gareth, I'm a member of the Geelong Football Club, but do I have a say on the coach or who's playing? Regardless of what I'm paying as an owner, I'm taking the trainer's opinions on jockeys every day of the week. My opinion is overruled by the trainer. That's interesting, Paulie. I think that some people think that. You would say I got voci-sacked. Yeah, well, you did. Imagine if you were an owner. Geez, you'd be annoying. You'd be a compler. This is where this horse should be.
Speaker 6No, no, no, no, no. I take a balanced approach like Troy and Calvin do.
Speaker 2Morning, Gareth. From a punting perspective, can you ask the King what his view in New South Wales? We have two rating country, provincial and metropolitan, but in other states they have the metropolitan. I'll have his view on that. Oh, that's, yeah, we'll get to that one day. That's a complicated question. What else have we got for you? Hi, Gareth. Everybody's saying that people, they don't buy stays. We have all these slot races and they are all for sprinters. Why is there not a slot race for stays? That's a good point. That's from Steve. I like that. Yeah. Lack of locally bred stays, lack of early two-year-olds. Who are we actually breeding? Deck Bates got taken off prior to Jenny because he didn't blow.
Speaker 6Didn't blow up.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 6And then he got back on. And then he got back on. Yes. Because he didn't blow up. Yes.
Speaker 2You take it on the chin and move on. 100%. Let's get stuck into bag of tips and see if we can, if we can find a few winners today.
Speaker 1The Giddy Up Bag of Tips for Oz Equipment Rentals. Supplying equipment to the construction, mining and roadworks industries. OzEquipment.com.
Speaker 2And Benny Caluzzi joins us on this Wednesday morning. Hello, Benny. Gareth, how are you, mate? Good, thank you. The fields are out for Sydney, which has excited you. What can you tell us?
Speaker 11I can tell you that we've got seven acceptances in the seven stakes. I imagine some of them will be scratching for Melbourne, but as it stands, Autumn Glow, barrier one, Aliana, barrier two, Lindemann, barrier three, Idle Flyer, four, Lady Shenandoah, five. We've got Gringotts in six and Chairwolf in seven. So you'd imagine Chris Waller has three dual acceptances there.
Speaker 2Yeah. And he'll probably scratch maybe one or two. And what about the shorts?
Speaker 11Shorts is interesting. Jolly Star's drawn 11 of 12. Ninja's drawn nine of 12. And Headwall, the other big chance, has drawn five. Interesting. Wasn't Joker's Grin not meant to be?
Speaker 2So he's accepted. He's accepted, yeah. Yeah, Chris told me after the show, yesterday, that the virus was caused by foot abscess. And they're going to try and treat that foot abscess. And hopefully it bursts in the next 24 hours. And then that gives an opportunity for them to start. But they wanted to accept to make, like, give them the chance to see if you can get over this foot abscess. Um, and if he does that, then they can start him, but it's probably highly unlikely that he races. So you'll be scratched.
Speaker 11Well, if he does run, he's drawn barrier three. Yeah.
Speaker 2Who was down to ride him? Adam Aranis. Yep. Hippo. Yeah. We're going to find a few winners today, and this is bag of tips on this Wednesday. All thanks to, of course, Bet365 with Top Tote Plus. You'll get the best payout across all three national totes. Imagine what you could be buying instead. Oz Equipment Rentals, supplying equipment to the construction, mining, and roadworks industries. OzEquipment.com. Sam Bennett joins us because he's the man that's looking after the Caulfield heat track these days. Sam, hello to you.
Speaker 12Morning, guys. How are you, mate?
Speaker 2How much rain did we get yesterday, mate?
Speaker 12Not enough. Okay. Yeah. We only had 0.8 in the rain gauge this morning, so yeah, sort of spent the day sitting in my hands waiting for rainfall to come that didn't quite eventuate, so we ended up putting four mil on yesterday.
Speaker 2Okay. So four mil yesterday, and we're at? We're on a good four. How do you think this track will play?
Speaker 12Yeah, as you said, good four as of this morning. It is that warm season turf, Kikuyu, which is just bouncing out of dormancy, so it won't be your sort of typical good four that we've sort of been accustomed to when it's actively growing at its absolute peak, but yeah, certainly horses will be on top of the ground and rail back in the true position, which we haven't raced that true position for quite a while now. So I would have thought most racing sort of conducting. It's quite significant southerly 20 or 30 Ks, which is a tailwind out of the 1,200 metre shooting down that side straight, so I think we've got two 1,100s of 1,000 and a 1,200 metre race today, so certainly something to watch out for.
Speaker 2All right. Beautiful, mate. Thanks for that.
Speaker 12Too easy. Cheers, mate.
Speaker 2Clint Hutchison from racing.com joins us here on this Wednesday to go through this Caulfield meeting. Hutchie, great to have you on Giddyup. Giddyup again, mate. How's things?
Speaker 13Yeah, things are good. Thanks, Gareth. Interesting with that wind, isn't it? Could be pushing them along a bit by the sound of it, so the punters are going to have to be aware of anyway.
Speaker 2That's why we'll be watching you, mate, because you'll be able to give us an update like you always do. I love how you move the marbles during the match at quarter time, half time. Sometimes we might have to do that today if the wind plays in a certain way.
Speaker 13It's not about moving marbles. I've lost my marbles. That'll be about it. But we'll see. How we going?
Speaker 2Race one's a maiden. Madam Doubtfire comes out, and this is over the 1,500 metres, Benny.
Speaker 11St. Fox stepping up and tripping is the $3.20 favourite from Melbourne Boy, $4. Both have been well back this morning. Scar Roll, $4.60, and Mason is $6.50. Hutch?
Speaker 13Yeah, interesting race. I mean, I was with St. Fox last. I thought it was going to be hard to beat. Maybe it didn't handle the wet track, so maybe it deserves another chance. But I've gone around it. I think Melbourne Boy can get it done here. I thought both career runs. It was on a soft track at Geelong, just got a bit too far over its ground. There's been some form out of that race, and I thought second up, sticking to 1,500. Hopefully, he can get it done. I think his closing sectionals have been pretty good. It's not a strong maiden, I've got to say that. Scarola, I think we pronounce it, the seven, is racing well. Sort of looked beaten, didn't it, behind Boy's bounce? I like that form, but stuck with Scun's pretty well, and I'd imagine he's going to run well. Zoo City brings the same form configure. And Mason? Mason? I should say, from the Wally Yard. It looks like it wants a bit of ground, but... Judged out pretty well, D-Lane, and with a good stable, looks a nice source. I think it's a winnable race. I don't think there's a real standout. I went 5.783 and think it's pretty open.
Speaker 2So 5.783 there for Hutchie. Race number two, Benchmark 70. Leighton Vostok comes out, but there's some good support for this Chris Waller favorite here, Benny.
Speaker 11Yeah, Nyeena's been smashed ever since the markets went up. $2.60, you've got $3 with you. It's our boost horse, yeah. Yeah, that's the boost horse. So all business on the second line, $5.50. Of the view, also $5.50. And Twisted Love's a bit of a drifter, $6.50.
Speaker 2What are you thinking, Hutch?
Speaker 13Yeah, I like the money for Nyeena. I thought she'd be pretty tough to beat, to be honest. I was really impressed with her last run at Caulfield behind Poolea, and she got to the line well from a long way back, and I think going up to a mile looks nice for her. She's going to need a bit of luck, though, isn't she, from gate one, because she can get back a little bit, but hopefully she gets what's required. On fleek's a good horse, jumped out pretty well. Probably will improve with the run and be better over further. I did like the run from number five, Twisted Love, first up for Benji. His stable's absolutely flying, and it got to the line pretty well. It was a benchmark 62, but you'd imagine it'll strip a little bit fitter as well. And Kiwi Jenny got home okay last start. But no, I'll be with the favourite. I thought it was one of the better bets on the card.
Speaker 2So 1, 6, 5, and 8, but keen with Nyeena here for Chris Waller and Logan Bates from that inside gate. Race number three over the 1,100 metres. Certain impact is a scratching. In this match, it's a scratch. This is an interesting betting race as well, Benny.
Speaker 11It is. Our favourite, Valeroso, returns gilded, and the punters are all over him early. $2.40 from Inner Gold, $4.20. Cab Frank, $5.50. That's your first starter. And Sound System, $7.00, and a big drifter today.
Speaker 13Yeah, too clever of me. I got on Sound System early, and all it's done since I backed it, Gareth has drifted.
Speaker 2I thought it was me then, Hutch.
Speaker 13Look, I thought Sound System's form last preparation was solid. I mean, it jumped favourite in two of its last three starts. It was $3.00 the other time, and I thought the jump out was good, and it will need a bit of luck, but look, I'm hoping it gets it, and if it does, I think it can win. It's races, like I said, rate pretty well. Look, there's absolutely no knock on Valeroso. It ran fifth on debut in the Vobie Showdown. It's generally a good race. Went too many excuses, but it was thrown in the deep end, wasn't it? And it's jumped out since. It's been a good race. It's been outstanding. So, obviously, there's a lot of support around that horse, but I still think Sound System, $7.50 each way, makes a fair bit of appeal. Outside that, number four, Lomu. It got to the line well first up. It's a nice horse, and the debutant, Cab Frank, number one, is another one that's shown something in the mornings. I went $8.00, $9.00, $4.00, $1.00. I'd be backing the $8.00 each way.
Speaker 2A few scratchings in the fourth over the $1,100. $2.00, $4.00, $11.00, and $14.00 come out here, Benny.
Speaker 11Egyptian Dance has been really strongly backed this morning, $3.60. I think Benny's going to win. I think Reggie's going at 32% for his last 50. Zoodazzler, $4.00 from Handy, $6.00, and Nyala has been $11.00 into $9.00 as well.
Speaker 13Yeah, with Egyptian Dance, I think it's probably about the right price at the moment, but it's not an easy race. There's some really nice horses going around that are either making their debut or have had one run and sort of put away and come back. I'm talking about the likes of Five Handy, 15, Zoodazzler. They've both had one run last prep, and they've both jumped out really really well. In conjunction with that, the 12 Swiss Stars, another debutant that's gone well. So on 3, 5, 15, 12, honestly, that's a race where I think you'd probably wait a little closer, see where the market takes shape. I think any one of them could probably win, but I'm happy to be with Egyptian Dance. He's had a jump out since his second one day at a time, and he's a nice horse. He's ready to win one. He should get the right run there on speed, too.
Speaker 2So 3, 5, 15, and 12 in race four. We move on to race five, first leg of the quaddi over there. 1,800 metres. Scratch the one and the nine here, Benny Caluzzi.
Speaker 11Yeah, best back runner of the entire day here, Killin' All. Looks ready to win. It's into the red, $1.85 from Torkin Stern, $5. Bit of a drifter today. Best time is $8.50, and then the four is $10. I'm not going to go for that name. No, well, that's fair enough, too.
Speaker 2Who do you like here, Hutch?
Speaker 13I think the favourite will win, I think. I'm not surprised the money's been there for it. I've got it marked a bit shorter than what it is. It was a good run the other day. Wide. No cover. It's a weaker race, and it just once again needs a little bit of luck in running. If it can get us, I thought Killin' All looks ready to score. So best time brings us in form, number three. Torkin Stern's going pretty well. Number five for Beji once again. It'll probably land right on speed. Of course, it led the other day, and Rip Currant's another horse arriving in form. So there's some horses in form here, but I think Killin' All brings the right form. And like I said, I think $1.85 wouldn't be shocked if it shortened a fraction more. But it will need a bit of luck in running.
Speaker 2So $8.35 there for Hutch in the first league of the quaddie, but keen on the favourite. $8.10 come out of the benchmark $78 over the $1,000 here, Benny Caluzzi.
Speaker 11Yep, and they just keep backing Cabriol on return here, the well-bred Godolphin horse. $2.10 into sunsetting, $5.50 on the second line. Esmali, $8.00. It's the drifter today, out from six. And La Astro Chat, they've had a go at this at big odds. It opened $16. It's now $8.00 with only some minor deductions.
Speaker 13Pretty keen on Cabriol. I thought it was the best of the day. He's a nice horse. You know, he's got figures that are sort of clear of a few of these. You're really just banking on him getting the right run and turning up to do what he did or can do. He fired fresh last campaign as well. He's liked their race. He's got a fair bit of upside probably than most of these. There's a couple here that do have some upside, but no, I thought he'd be tough to beat. Like Czar on board, and hopefully he can do what he did last campaign and win fresh up. Outside of that, the $12.00. Sunsetting, it's racing pretty well. Should get a good run from there. Ismarly is another one that I think has jumped out nicely for the Hayes camp. And it's also lightly raced. Of course, it won three last campaign and looks a nice horse. So he'll just need a bit of luck from his barrier. And Costella, awkwardly drawn as well out in 10. So I think the principal chances have all drawn a little bit wide here. But Cabriol, the best of them. And if he can get the right run, I thought he'd have a class edge on a couple of these.
Speaker 2So Cabriol, Hutch's best. I think Kingsley Bartholomew was saying that. He's best as well today. So $2.10 there with Bet365, that favourite. Scratch the 2, 6 and 7 in this benchmark. 70 over the 1,500 metres race 7, Benny.
Speaker 11Encanto Star 2 is on here. $1.50 and really well back from Katsumi Orochi. $6.00. We've got the benchmark, $7.50. And Anglin with a bit of a gear change is $13.00.
Speaker 13Thin race. I think Gareth Bavitt should win it. Encanto Star has been pretty impressive. It's the last couple and don't see any reason now why it won't be very hard to beat going to $1,500 today. I think it's been really well placed here by the Mark Camp. And of course, Katsumi Orochi competed against it last start. And he'll strip a bit fitter, but it's hard to see him turning the tables on that run, isn't it? So like I said, there's not much depth in this race. The benchmark probably had an excuse the other day, but I didn't need to produce something. It hasn't yet. And Glenn Finnan will be a little bit fitter second up, but it really falls away. So once again. It's a short price favorite. It probably should be winning and if it gets the right run in the race. And I can't see any reason why it won't.
Speaker 2So it's a skinny quaddie today. Some short price favorites in the first three legs. And Jimmy's brother, what's the shortest price favorite of the day? Around $1.50. It's a good race to conclude the program for a Wednesday. I like this race. Two electric Elvis comes out. No sea palm, the nine. The 15 and 16 are out as well here, Benny Caluzzi.
Speaker 11You might need a couple more. One more for the quaddie here, Gareth. The Volta $4.60 and favorite from attachments has been well back $5.50. National code went up $11 is now $7. So good support there and Leo Charlie $7.50.
Speaker 2Which way are you with? Who are you with here Hutch?
Speaker 13Oh, this is, this is wide open. I mean, you might be able to go skinny in the earlier legs of the quad. He'd probably won a few here. Um, look, my original selection got scratched. I'm left with national code. He's got a good chance in the race. Good each way chance, um, was a bit unlucky actually last start. National code, I thought just held up at a, at a key stage and probably should have finished close. That was the race one by dirty look, which a couple come out of, but yeah, I think he's, he's got a good chance. The Volta didn't really love the jump out to be honest, but, um, the Volta's form, her forms certainly rock solid and you know, she was running against likes of a Gold Coast Bell and Concord Connie last prep and not finishing too far behind them on a couple of occasions. So that reads well, but what's that I'm going to, I think you might want to throw in a quaddies express. Class and look, it's, it's definitely a bit of guesswork here. It's been awful at its last two, but I'm putting it down to the heavy nine track. It's the last start that was behind electric Elvis who came out and I'm just hoping on top of the ground, he can, he can fire because he's formed last campaign. He ran some great races. Once again, they were throwing him around in some stakes races. He ended up in the Australian Guinea. He's like, he's a better horse than what we've seen in this campaign for sure. Um, and I thought one day at a time might be able to bounce back as well. It was pretty good winning a couple of starts back and. Probably does it in there. Gareth, I went 13, 11, five and 14, but you could probably add another two or three winning chances in the race.
Speaker 2You're quality here at, um, at the heat track at Caulfield today there, Hutch.
Speaker 13Oh, you love a quality. Don't you, mate?
Speaker 2I think everybody loves a quality. I'm, I'm, I'm not a great, I'm not a great quality taker these days, but a lot of my listeners do. And do you know what, Hutch? I've got your quality here for you. You got three, five, eight, first leg, 11, one out, second leg, seven, eight, nine. third leg. Is this right? And then you're coming home with 2-5-7, 11-3. And 13 and 14.
Speaker 13Yeah, I reckon you could probably, if you wanted to go even skinnier, just go one out in Canto Star if you wanted to go a bit skinnier, I think. But happy enough for that.
Speaker 11Hey, Jay, speaking of quaddi, shout out to the St. Bernard's boys. $150,000 they got the quaddi in a group together. So well done to them. They had Pondoleo in it.
Speaker 2I forgot his name, but they were legends of the Ascot Vale Hotel. They got the quaddi at Flemington as well. They only had two horses in the first leg. She's Alibi, and then they went field, field. How good. I said, that's so bloody easy. I don't know how I didn't do that, actually. Sounds easy, doesn't it? And you know what, Mike? What's your best, just recap your best bets at Caulfield today.
Speaker 13Best bet, best bet, race six, number 11, Cabriol, and next best would be race two, number one, Neena.
Speaker 2And my mates love just following Hutchie Honkers. How do you get involved with Hutchie Honkers? Because you've got Happy Valley on a Wednesday night as well. And they just sit there. They have a couple of Chardonnays, maybe a few Peronis, and they just follow you in, Hutchie.
Speaker 13Yeah, well, it's never easy at the start of the season. But Happy Valley tonight, I think there's a couple of good chances. I think Zach's got a good chance. Race three, number one, Noisy Boy, go well. And I think Zach's got another good chance for Dave Eustace, actually, in the sixth on Dazzling Fit. Race six, number one. There's a couple for you, Gareth.
Speaker 2But if you just go to Hutchie Honkers, and you can get all of your tips and analysis, it's pretty easy, isn't it?
Speaker 13It is, mate. HutchieHonkers.com, get involved, have a bit of fun.
Speaker 2HutchieHonkers.com. All right, then, thanks, brother. Thanks for that, Hutchie.
Speaker 13Cheers, mate.
Speaker 2There's Clint Hutchinson there, 10.33. We'll take a break. We'll come back, and we'll preview Warwick Farm.
Speaker 1Join the conversation. Text us on 0499 736 736. Live across Australia, this is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 14Oh, we're from Tiger Land. A fighting fury, we're from Tiger Land.
Speaker 2In any weather, you will see us with a grin. The mighty crazy. We'll be right back.
Speaker 11In the first final, so we weren't the favourites by any means, and we won't be this weekend either, but who knows what can happen. So who are you playing? Playing Werribee. They've been the top dogs for a couple of years now.
Speaker 2Yeah, and they beat you last year's grand final?
Speaker 11Yeah, they beat us in overtime.
Speaker 2Okay. Is there any chance that you can beat them this time around?
Speaker 11Of course, there's always a chance. There's always a chance, but we go in as the underdogs, no doubt.
Speaker 2So what would the market be with bet 365?
Speaker 11I'd say we'd be 260, 270. I can see. What does that make them, a dollar?
Speaker 2Yeah, well, you're the bookmaker. So you're telling me you're still a chance.
Speaker 11We're always still a chance, Jay. You know how finals are won. They're won by want and desire more than skill a lot of the time.
Speaker 2Mickey Gannon joins us. You just got to go and take a leaf out of his book. He's one of the greatest ever soccer players to play in the Northern Beaches. Hello to you, Mickey Gannon.
Speaker 15That's outrageous, Gareth, but I do appreciate it. A bit of David Goggins sort of stuff there, showing your desire. If you throw a bit of Tom Papley belief in there, Benny, you'll be all right.
Speaker 2Good luck to the Swans. If they can beat, this victory against the Dockers will be far better than the Brisbane Lions if they can.
Speaker 15I've had something on them to win the flag.
Speaker 11Look, it's probably a bit of a reach, but they're seven bucks if they win this week against Freo, which is not out of the question, home game.
Speaker 15Is it a long, is it a stretch, Benny? If they reproduce anything near their form lines, gee whiz.
Speaker 11I don't know. There have been some, when Freo are on, they're on, but there has been some vulnerabilities at stages in games.
Speaker 2They got Brisbane in it. They jumped, they surprised Brisbane there, Sydney, with how well they played a little bit. But I wonder if Sydney could have beat Brisbane if Brisbane showed up like they did last Saturday. But you never know. You only can beat who you beat. So I hope the Swans do make it into the grand final. What's that saying? What's that saying that Kane says and who else says it here on our show? Kingy? No, is it Kingy? Don't get beat what you know. Yeah, don't get beaten by what you know. Yeah. And we know that the Vatican, I was going to back it today, it's $7 into $5.50 in the first race with bet $3.65, Benny.
Speaker 11Has been well supported. So has the favourite keen to exceed. It's been $3.60 into $3.00. No deductions here. We love to see that. Crescent King, $3.20 from Vatican, $5.50. And better by far is $6.00.
Speaker 2Mickey Gannon. Why are you keen to back? Because you know what? I went and had a look at this race. The breeding. And I know it's had its issues, the Vatican. But like, remember Dean Watling tipped us, check me, the daughter of Prague is one of the trial horses. Oh, I should say the son of Prague, check me. They will go like last week's pay, I reckon. And Vatican will just smoke the pipe and whooshka. As long as McDonald doesn't get held up.
Speaker 15Yeah, it's really, it's a really open race. And I'd say a lot of these horses will progress well and surely beyond the main. And they'll be able to get to the Saturday grade for sure. Plenty of speed. So the weapon named after Benny. Check me, we'll be there. Better by far will come across for sure. Crescent King has speed. And I think it sets up for a couple of horses. Keen to exceed Vatican. And even, I'm going to go with Fiverr. That's how Dino reckons it's pronounced. Anyway, the nine. I know we'll get their chance here today. And if you're looking for one at value, I'll give you some numbers in order. We'll tip the nine. Nine from the seven, four and one. I reckon Gareth. Because I really like the trials of the nine. I like the trials of the seven as well. But I think the nine five will get last crack at them. Wouldn't be betting up necessarily. Very competitive race. And I expect a lot of these horses to go beyond this grade.
Speaker 2So nine, seven, four in the first. But playing some value there. Maybe with the two waller runners in the opening race there at Canterbury today. Let's move on to race number two. And the scratchings here. Well, where do we start? We start. No clock. No Vatican. Because he's in that previous race. Scratch the eight, 10, 13, 14, 15 and 16.
Speaker 11And this is the best back runner of the entire day. That's not even really that close. It's been hammered. Saffron Vale, $1.65. Nearly 700 punters already have taken that bet boost. Dr. No is $4.20. Calucan Beauty, $5.50. And Afari, $8.50.
Speaker 15Yes, it's short but sweet. Saffron Vale. She'll be getting the job done, Gareth. She should have finished a lot closer. She probably should have won there second up. She ducked to the inside second and got the job done there. I think it's a pretty good form line as well. I think Blessed Eagle has ability. So I think it's clearly on top. I really like Afari. Not a great draw. We haven't spoken about it yet. Rail is in a true position. And there's a fair bit of wind in Sydney today. Really doing its thing. Early spring is the wind in Sydney. But I think you would like to be outside leader 1-1 running line there today just to get a little bit of protection. And Afari could get that. But so will Saffron Vale. So 6, 9, 2, and 4. Gee, I think it's just too good for them.
Speaker 26, 9, 2, and 4 in race number two. We move on to the third race at Canterbury today. Mark Roden was keen on Doradus. And it's been well supported. $3.50 to $2.50. Now it can scratch the $11, Benny.
Speaker 11It certainly has Doradus. $2.50. Nash probably comes across straight to the front from standard deviation. $3.20. Supreme Sovereign, $5.50. I think it's run. Third at its last three. And Fio Prospero is $11.
Speaker 15Yeah, I'm going the other way. This is sort of taking on Doradus as a leader. Look, it might be suited. It might not. Count T.Kill Kenny is also another leader in the race. And I think they might drive each other crazy. Dolce Dior comes across. Andron, think I do as well. So there's a fair bit going on. 3, 1, 7, and 2. I think Doradus would definitely give a huge start. But I think standard deviation there for Chris Waller. Ran a career peak last time. That was second up. 1,900 metres. And that was 15.52. 1,900 metres on this occasion. Second is far better suited now. Third up. 1,900 metres. Gets a little bit of cover. I think can settle probably 1-1 with James there. If not, two pairs back running line. And just peel off. And be the one that comes after Doradus there. And more than happy to make it the best of the day. It's a really challenging day, G. 3, 1, 7, and 2.
Speaker 23, 1, 7, and 2. We're going to take a break here. This is our preview of Canterbury in Sydney with Mickey Gannon and Benny Caluzzi. All thanks to Bet364. And we'll have a look at the quaddie leagues next.
Speaker 1Join the conversation. Text us on 0499 736 736. Live across Australia. This is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 2Welcome back to Giddy Up. Chris Waller has just sent out a media release regarding Joker's grin at Reeds. During a live radio interview yesterday, which was on Giddy Up, I was asked how Joker's grin was progressing. He explained that he had recorded a minor elevated temperature that morning. And based on the information available at the time, there was a possibility he would need to go to the paddock. Following the interview, further examination identified soreness in one of his feet. Our ferry located and treated an abscess, which appears to have been the cause of the elevated temperature. His temperature has since returned to normal. And he has been entered to race on Saturday. Subject to the approval of the stewards, we will continue to monitor. to monitor his blood profile and assess his soundness before for the race. Jokers Grimm will only take his place on Saturday if we are completely satisfied that his blood results are normal and he is 100% sound and fit to race. We hope this provides clarity regarding his condition and his fitness ahead of Saturday's race. Chris Waller racing. I think that's excellent for the punters, Mickey Gannon.
Speaker 15Yeah, it's great work. Good work by you yesterday, Chris, and good work by Chris being on the front foot on a Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. to get that information out there.
Speaker 11Yeah.
Speaker 15It's good.
Speaker 11Yeah, that's all we want. Now we just need the meteorolace and where all the other horses are going.
Speaker 2Well, I guess he doesn't know yet. Billions. Yeah, what race are we up to? Race number four, West on Dalby at 350, Unstoppable 360, Snack Bar at 480, Harry's Evidence at $7, and Magical Moments at $8. Spaceball is a $11 chance here. Who are they backing, Benny?
Speaker 11They're backing West of Dalby or Dalby. I'm not sure how you go with it.
Speaker 2Depends what part of the world.
Speaker 11It went up a big price, $11. This race has been hit with lots of scratchings, albeit. So $3.50 from Unstoppable, $3.60. Snack Bar, $4.80 goes forward, and Harry's Evidence is $7.
Speaker 15Yeah, I do understand from a ratings perspective why you might be backing West of Dalby, but gee whiz, last win. If I'm getting this right, 2023. So you can go around without me. Five, two, 13 are the numbers here. Happy to lean the way of Harry's Evidence. Third up here, Peak Fitness has really good track figures. Can roll across from a pretty fair start point and land forward of midfield. I think a chance goes to get that bit right. I think he can win the race. On speed, Moss Gold, Magical Moments. Other than that, not a huge speed influence. So it's a really great race for Harry's Evidence to get. Into the winner's circle, nine, five, two, 13.
Speaker 2There's Mickey Gannon's numbers in the first league of the quaddie. The scratchings in that race are four, seven, eight, and 11. We move on to race number five over the 1,100 metres. You can scratch the 10, 11, 13, and 14 here, Benny Caluzzi.
Speaker 11Yeah, well, we haven't seen Water Legacy in almost a year. This horse has been gilded. It's been absolutely smashed into the red now. $1.90 from Fierce, $2.70, just holding his price Albany Road is $9 and Tremonti is 19s.
Speaker 15Do you know the owner of this horse, G?
Speaker 2Yeah, I think it's our colleague on Saturday morning for winners, the face of Picklebet, Brett Baker. He says it's the best horse Bjorn's got. So I don't know if he's lying to us or...
Speaker 15Well, that seems like absolute garbage. But the money suggests that the horse is flying. You get James McDonald on the board. I think they strike. They're around close to 30%, maybe just under when they combine. The Kiwis, they get together. And the horse looks to be flying. I spoke to Bakes yesterday, actually. He was, I don't know why, but he won, in my opinion, on the race. I think he bet before me anyway because it's been absolutely smashed. I think it wins Water Legacy. You get to Matt Faber's over Fierce, who was very, very good there at Warwick Farm, put up a huge figure and can be competitive here. But I just think the difference between the two is the barrier. And Water Legacy is going to find a better position around him. And Fierce is going to be out wide. And caught on a limb, likely. I think the high-pressure race will set up well for Albany Road. Can run a place in Poker Jack. This has been poking around in Saturday races. Now it gets here to midweeks. Two-killer claim can be there about 8-2-4-7.
Speaker 28-2-4-7 race five. Sorry to interrupt the Canterbury preview, but the fields are out for Caulfield. It's a group one day. We're all excited. Everybody wants to know what the market or what kind of fields are they. They're pretty good fields. It's 1,000 guineas prelude. We've got Grinsinger Heart Barrier 14. We've got Athera Barrier 5. We've got Portonari Barrier 13. Proliferate Gate Barrier 3. Saintly Dancer Barrier 4. Caulfield Guineas prelude. Tornado Valley 3. American Eagle 8. Blind Rays 9. Wolf Gap 5. There you go. And then we've got the Underwood Stakes. Field of 9. Enderman Barrier 1. Buckaroo 8. All over. Yes. Attrition 7. Pinstripe 2. Cosmic Crusader 3. Birdman 4. Middle Earth 5. Kingswood 9. Aliana Barrier 6. The Naturalism. You've got St. George Barrier 20. Barclay Square 19. Deakin Barrier 2, just to name a few. Saran Barrier 8. For the WA listeners, Machine Gun Gracie Barrier 13. And for the... So Rupert Clark Stakes. Here we go. Tom Kitten 14. Evaporate 17. Seapools 5. War Machine 18. Angel Capital 7. Lady Shenandoah Gate 1 with C. Williams aboard. Warnie 3. Ferocia 8. Von Hawke 6. Planet Red 10. So Barge 13. Yellow Jersey 16. Regal Award 4. If he jumps, look out. Sun God 2. Persian Spirit 9. Recon Barrier 2. Harrier 12. Harry shot the first emergency barrier 15 and then Tennessee Bound, the second emergency. So that is the Rupert. So Rupert Clark Stakes. So there you go.
Speaker 11It's a great race. Probably the best edition in a couple of years at least.
Speaker 2Yeah. We're going to take a break. We'll come back and have a look at the next two races at Canterbury next.
Speaker 1Australia. This is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 2I've enjoyed this. I can't hear what's happening on Channel 9, but Dave Campbell, he's not a great fan of horse racing. He's just interviewing the lead actor of Farlap. I forgot who his name was, but he was a champion actor because it's the celebration of the 100 years of obviously since we saw Farlap, I think. And then there's a musical. We've got to get the actors on for that musical because I'll be going to it. I hope Dave Campbell goes to it, celebrating an icon of Australia in Farlap. Anyway, Mickey Gannon, we're up to race number six here and we've got taxation. Something that I need to look at in the next couple of days. $1.60, Blitzkill at $8.50 and Hallabella at $8.50 here. Are they backing taxation?
Speaker 11They are. I'm doing mine on Friday. I'm not looking forward to it. It's been even money into $1.60 with only minor deductions. So crunch, basically Blitzkill $8.50, Hallabella $8.50 and found the gold. It's $9. Mickey?
Speaker 15How about a take on taxation? What price did you say it was, Benny?
Speaker 11$1.65 now.
Speaker 15Dangerous, dangerous. Look, J-Mac Stig, the horse, she obviously has ability. I think we didn't mind her and Ruination last time. But look, I just think it's a different setup. He might be stuck, the veils, four pairs of the fence and that could be an awkward position. So you're going to need an absolute 10 out of 10 and I think you're paying the J-Mac tax. So happy to take this horse on with Flight Crew, Zach Lloyd, I should say, from the wide draw can come across and I think he has some really good figures at this setup here at Canterbury, 1,100 metres. If she can run up to any of those, I think she can be competitive and we're getting the right price to find out. And what's a pretty competitive race outside of taxation? 2, 5, 9 and 12, my numbers.
Speaker 22, 5, 9 and 12 and in race seven, you can scratch the 2, 3 and 6 here, Benny Caluzzi.
Speaker 11Cobra Club, $3.60 in favourite but has been a little bit of a drifter this morning from Fierceness, $4.80. It's the money horse. Savvy Spy, $4.80 as well and Papa Blue, $5.50.
Speaker 15Didn't know which way to go between Cobra Club and Savvy Spy. I've gone the way of the five. Cobra Club just do a little less work in the run with Savvy Spy as they've become a wide draw. 5, 14, 11 and 7. No real confidence in the last.
Speaker 25, 14, 11 and 7. Best bets, Mickey Gannon?
Speaker 15Best bet, this is the one and not a huge amount of confidence. I think it's going to be a good one. I think it's going to be a good one. I think it's going to be a good one. I think it's going to be a good one. I think it's going to be a good one. But that is the play, race three, number three, standard deviation. I think we're in that $3.20 mark. And the best value play on the card, race four, number nine, Harry's Evidence.
Speaker 2Race four, number nine and race one, number seven, the best each way play all day. That's G Hall's. That's G Hall's, mate. What about you? What about you, Benny?
Speaker 11No, I might double up a couple.
Speaker 2Beautiful.
Speaker 11A few small multis, but I'll be heading the books for Saturday today.
Speaker 240 seconds we've got left, so I need your quality, Mickey Gannon.
Speaker 15Quality, yeah, let's do that. Where do we start? Race four will be a good place to start. We'll chuck the nine, the five and the two in. Nine, five and two. We'll go to race five. We'll just have the eight, the two and the four. Just in case they ever do it, now Boniro can go for the top. Eight, two, four. Race six, the two, five and nine. And in the last, five, fourteen, eleven and seven.
Speaker 2Five, fourteen, eleven and seven. Nine, five, two, eight, two, four, two, five, nine and five, fourteen, eleven and seven. Your number's there for the quality. Good on you, Mickey Gannon. On you, lads. Good on you, Benny Caluzzi.
Speaker 11Thanks, mate. See you Friday.
Speaker 2We'll take a break. Yeah, looking forward to that. More of Bag of Tips next.

Speaker 23us now good day maca good morning g big build-up once again yeah absolutely baseless with fact
Speaker 2hasn't been that long no but you are looking a treat um i don't know who does your facials these days but you are the metrosexual of the racing industry i reckon there's no doubt about
Speaker 23that yeah well you've been saying it for a while mate but no one's listening no what about
Speaker 2last saturday michael lane's got this gallop of firing at the moment
Speaker 23yeah she's certainly doing a great job and fantastic for the mccrosty family particularly uh greg mccrosty who follows in the footsteps of his mum and dad barry and jan who've raised horses with michael for a long time and other trainers of course they've had such wonderful success with their their colors the cerise and blue which have frequented the winner's circle on many many occasions and it's great to see that the next generation i spent a bit of time in the goldfields in fact i play football with greg going back many many moons ago and it's just sensational to see him follow in and enjoy the passion that his mum and dad barry and jan have enjoyed for so long in in racing very rarely do you go to a race meeting without them being on course so it's a really good result it's a good result for michael lane to stables back in some form at the moment i love the interview that i
Speaker 2did there with gary crispin um not because i did the interview but because gary crispin sounds like he's a bit of a character clarified that sound like you no i'm joking this is what gary um had to say yesterday about a punter who he didn't know that gave him a call after backing him i had a hundred to one there on saturday talking about punters uh sad you know
Speaker 24uh no sunday sunday morning was sitting there and i got a phone call and i was like oh my god i got a phone call from the east yeah and it was a bloke by the name of michael rung me and he said you don't know me he said but i just want to ring up ring you up to thank you and i said what for he said i backed your horse i said oh no problems well done and he said i've got a gift coming for you a bottle of grange and uh i said oh you don't need to do that but he said no no it's coming my wife told me i had to so there goes the wife again you know yeah yeah he's got a bottle of grange coming over for me and uh i said no no it's coming my wife told me i had to so there goes the wife and um he said that before he got off he said that he he was going pretty bad he was down to his last 500 so he put the lot on and he said he had 250 250 each way so i don't know if
Speaker 2it's a story or if it's true there you go that's a great punting story cob there's a few elements of that story that that's um quite unbelievable really um but you know if it's true yeah i reckon
Speaker 23that story no
Speaker 2you think it's true i reckon well depending you couldn't make it up no if gaz gets if gary gets
Speaker 23the the grains and we know it's true but i love the fantastic now good on him too look what a weekend it was though um when you had admired winning uh 101 dollars a 10 year old um now its previous win was at northern in 2022 before that november 2021 um we're heading to 2021 and 27 right at the moment there so for gary to stick with it and keep the horse going good on him uh i wouldn't have been able to find it with a pair of 10 by 50s um all back it with borrowed money to be quite truthful but somebody has um and it's great to see that someone gets rewarded for their their patience and their perseverance and their love for the horse a 10 year old and of course on the same day we saw so war win as a 10 year old as well and then i went to northern on thursday yeah and um a nine-year-old by the name of olden who hadn't won for 1506 days it bobbed up and they backed it as well what's going on there gareth i mean it did sit was it a weekend for pensioner benefits or something going on was it what
Speaker 2did you have a good weekend i'm joking oh yeah i had a really good weekend it gives us all hope doesn't it cob hey that admires that admired all right um its last victory as you probably like it at one at belmont on saturday but before that it won at 150 to one on the 16th of august 2025 like it's quite unbelievable really basically within a year of um his two wins he's won at 100
Speaker 23to one so there you go he's an absolute bloody marvel mate that's a lot and um what about the
Speaker 2punter his last 500 he was going bad so he's at his last 500 on this horse hopefully got a fair
Speaker 23it's it's extraordinary to think that you're down to your last monkey and you're going to put it on admired at 101 as i say you you wouldn't be doing this with borrowed money but this place got his own quite clearly yes and he's pinned the ears back and he's had a crack at a horse and i hope he's got an absolute bankroll there and yeah um then does the caller get anything as well as the
Speaker 2trainer did you call i missed i was i was uh where was i was at the ascot vale hotel so i couldn't
Speaker 23hear the commentary but i heard the yeah i did i brought him right yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Speaker 2but you got the photo right did you i didn't i didn't hear it flash down the outside what else now we're going to move on because chris wallace just sent out an email not an email it was a social media post um and i'll just get it on my phone right now i did have it and then i here we go it says revelations about joker's grin during a live radio interview yesterday which was on giddy up i was asked how joker's grin was progressing i explained that he had recorded a minor elevated temperature that morning and based on that information available at the time there was a possibility he would need to go to the paddock following the interview further examination identified soreness in one of his feet our ferry located and treated an abscess which appears to have been the cause of the elevated temperature his temperature he's he's has since returned to normal and he's been and he has been entered to race on saturday subject to the approval of the stewards we will continue to monitor his blood profile and assess his soundness before the race joker's grin will only take his place on saturday if we are completely satisfied that his blood results are normal and he is 100 sound and is fit to race we hope that provides clarity regarding his condition and his fitness ahead of saturday's race chris waller racing so that's terrific that's a great update there so some good news i guess in a way that hopefully gets over this abscess and we see
Speaker 23him at the races on saturday in the shorts there darren yeah it's such a frustrating time of course since he left wa there in the care of bernie milliner i think bernie also may have encountered some of those hoof issues that you've touched upon there with joker's grin i think they were niggling in the background they may have impacted upon him from time to time not that he did a lot of racing here before he went over to chris's stable of course but he he seems from what we can gather at least to have had these little niggles and it may well have you know been a result of navicular problems so good result there a better result than what it would have been after the news that you broke yesterday there and the clarity that's come through from chris there this morning so hopefully fingers crossed for those owners involved in joker's grin they get to see him run in sydney at some time soon because it has been
Speaker 2frustrating the dream still alive i guess for the everest but they probably need a lot to go right
Speaker 23before the shorts on saturday you do you need everything to go in your favor and you certainly don't need niggles like that to put you behind the eight ball so um yeah maybe that's uh still a dream but um i think if you're a realist you'd say that you you'd be making up the numbers if you did get there yes given the fact there's a few horse coming from hong kong now the henley
Speaker 2homes blackers is a wonderful job with henley homes it's the henley homes underwood stakes on saturday cosmic crusader andrea leak william pike barry number three i pose you this the question cob because you know bob peter's better than most and you've been talking to him um you've talked to him a lot throughout your career interviewing him um in your time in racing he he's got barrier three if lindemann comes out which there is a possibility that he will come out and be and he'll stay in sydney for the seven stakes there's no speed whatsoever in this race buckaroo um kingswood could lead but birdman buckaroo horses like um eliana um those type of horses are more sit sprinters in a way middle earths on a melbourne cup path i don't know what they'll do with pinstripe stepping up and trip he could go forward but would there be a would there be a world that bob says to william mate you go and own this race and lead
Speaker 23oh yeah well this is the old chestnut isn't it yeah with with bob's horses he doesn't like them being in front uh they've been there i think we touched upon this a week or so ago in fact a couple of weeks ago after the memsie when william was uh criticized i thought unfairly um so it's hard to know you know we have seen him lead but as i mentioned at the time gareth it was against inferior opposition to what he meets here i just think that willie will come out assess the situation and then have to take matters into hands and look you know by default if you finished up there in front so be it so be it uh they'd have to run him down and he showed you know what an outstanding horse he is and he's come of age i think this preparation and what we've seen so far in in victoria so you know you've just got to let the cards fall as they may when the gates open you don't know what the tactics of other riders are going to be at this stage it's just all speculative and willie has the opportunity to size that up certainly from barrier three i think he's in the driver's seat no matter what happens no matter what unfolds there in the early stages of the underwood he's got um sakuma engaged as
Speaker 2well there in the naturalism stakes which is his melbourne cup right at the moment for graham big but it'd be great to see cosmic crusader for wa racing to win this group one i have he's the favorite with bet 365 around 2.50 before the market went down after the official um field was announced so um he's going to get a lovely gate he's going to be closer this time around he's got the race fitness on his side he gets to 1800 meters which many say is his premier trip there's no there's no excuses really for him on saturday maca if he's good enough he'll win i reckon on saturday yeah
Speaker 23fair call no that's exactly right too if you're good enough everything falls into your favor you get the right draw and you know if the horse is absolutely in the zone and there's no reason to be concerned at the moment then he'll take a fair bit of beating so i think west aussie horses have a quite a reasonable record over the years in the underwood stakes going back so um yeah he might be
Speaker 2able to add his name to it albeit trained in victoria yep um belmont on saturday and the boulder cup on sunday there's plenty to look forward to yeah a couple of meetings there that
Speaker 23we probably will shine the light on there with tab touch stakes to darty going around once again going for four straight having won the finally he'll line up against a pretty similar uh opposition again royal torrenado likely to come forward certain times i think is the interesting run with the interesting runner with the upside uh boulder cup bit of a rerun of the cool gardy cup over the 2100 opportunistic beat the jester sun they'll go to it again the jester sun's drawn another horror gate uh lavelli i didn't think that there was a lot of uh you know change to what we saw there in the boulder cup um there are the meetings to follow of course with cowgirlie just around the corner um there is some other news too here that i think we should touch upon gareth and that's to do with
Speaker 2the pinjara race club okay i was gonna ask you that relationship with mad it wasn't on my rundown but i know that there was some big breaking news and i um told our listeners that this might be happening but this is a big story if it's true maca yeah well it is true i've
Speaker 23confirmed with the chairman of the pinjara race club no official word for a magic million at this stage however the relationship between magic millions and the pinjara race club has come to an end and the magic millions will officially move back to ascot to be run next year this is probably a decision that very few saw coming certainly not the pinjara race club given the great relationship that they've had with magic millions since they took the race over back there in 2016. i think it needs to be remembered that when the magic millions was first run in 1999 and i recall it distinctly there was a complete lack of interaction from the public the crowd was small and the crowds weren't ever that great at ascot during that time it was centered around the yearling sales obviously and um you know it it always provided a very good platform going to the sales but the pinjara club took over uh magic millions wanted to do something to rejuvenate the race or at least generate some interest in the race the prize money remained the same for years and years and years pinjara though developed the day into their biggest turnover wise attendance wise atmosphere it created a great energy because of the community around the region there from mandira who could travel across all of the race goers they had to um you know develop this day uh rain hail or shine and they copped all of it uh nature's for the first couple of years a 44 degree day and then torrential rain which nearly washed the meeting out first couple of years but they pushed on they were getting very good crowds there and nothing's changed except for the fact now that magic millions have pivoted and they want to go back to the city i don't know if it's a good step or not i think it's retrograde probably um and disappointing from the pinjara club who would have closed down late next year with the big development of their new building so they would have missed a magic millions however you know we've seen some great horses win their super smink and she's a builder have gone there and smooth chino and valor road and the crowds have been fantastic uh along the way there's a different energy about it as opposed to running that type of a meeting in the metropolitan area i don't necessarily know if racing and wagering wa were happy about it i don't necessarily know if perth racing are all that happy about it that's the feeling i'm getting at the very least and i know that the pinjara race club have been blindsided by this and they're absolutely disappointed that the relationship and their number one day won't be run down there in february like it has been who's just some big news in regards to to that is that is that a magic millions decision or does rawa have to yeah completely as i as i understand it having spoken with the chairman of the club yesterday as late as yesterday he informed me that he was advised by um barry bowdy church from magic magic millions that um this uh relationship would end and uh the decision had been made to bring the magic millions back to ascot so we might get dave house i think it comes a big shock to the club yeah you know i i recall at the presentations the the great adulation magic millions bestowed upon pinjara for what they've done and they seemingly on the face were very very happy but for whatever reason and we'd love to know what the reasons are they're going to bring it back to the perth metropolitan area and run that race meeting at ascot as i understand it as of
Speaker 2yesterday direct from the pinjara race you know what we're going to do darren we're going to get dave houston or barry bowditch on the show to explain that decision because there could be a a legitimate reason for why they are doing that they might think it's ready to go back to ascot they want to build on that day and to have it in the city they think they might get more people there and as long as people know why they made that decision if it is i'll just
Speaker 23say this i'll just say this right off the top if it goes back to ascot let's hope that they put more into it than what they did previously because it was a very very benign meeting as i recall all of the meetings that were run there up until they left and they developed the relationship in 2016 with pinjarra so they got a lot of years to get it right and it never worked it never worked with the crowd uh there just didn't seem to be the buy-in and at that time of the year or year um you know there's a lot of holiday makers down there at that pinjarra region they developed the big crowds and the atmosphere and the interaction it was something different and something unique what do you think and it gave you know our number one provincial track a platform to profile a big day of racing last so if they're going back to the city let's hope they're going to do it a bit differently to what they've done in the past that's all i'm saying you you talk to
Speaker 2a lot of people in the industry um darren what do you think the participants want uh well i i
Speaker 23think there's probably a a core group maybe maybe i'm only speculating of trainers that may not want to travel the one hour down to pinjarra okay on that particular day um
Speaker 2i i'm as i say i i'm not sure we might do a giddy up investigation i might do a giddy up
Speaker 23investigation see if i can come back well i'll let you go on that uh you can be the bloodhound and you can track down the reasons why but all i know is what i've been told and i have had it confirmed okay by the club itself but there's been no official word from anyone in an official capacity
Speaker 2at magic millions what about a winner today and we'll talk about that tomorrow there's a big story just broken there by darren mccullough he can do it all um the old cob that pinjarra has lost the magic millions carnival or the magic millions day now bob's got an interesting runner at belmont today really interesting yeah i think it's a really interesting runner i think it's a really um is it still in or has it been scratched treasured legacy treasured legacy was still in the last time no it's in it's in it was the horse that tried like a jet um beautifully bred as all of bob's horses are it's an ollie kirk philly and um was off the map and failed there on the boot bumper in there buttering up again the putters well there were um legitimate excuses
Speaker 23for treasured legacy the day that it went there and went around a dollar nine and a half dollars ninety they discovered that she was in season after the race they discovered after the race that she was shinsaw she's had throat surgery since then so there's a lot of factors at play here but she trialed the house down and she was the talk of the barrier trials there for weeks treasured legacy before that um unplaced run first up when expectations were so high now again she's trialed up really well she'll be very short whether or not you want to back her at a dollar seventy or the orabouts well you know that's entirely up to the punter but i'd be suggesting here that we just uh look on and see what she can do here this afternoon. Let her deeds on the track do the talking. Trials are different to race day, and she's clearly had some issues.
Speaker 2What winners have we got for us, Mac? I've got 30 seconds.
Speaker 23Right, race three, number seven, Star Martini. We're playing around the $2.70 mark. I thought it was well placed here. Look, it's got the speed to offset the draw. It drops four and a half with the claim of Jason Lee, 53 kilos and a filly that can run. Each way, race five, number two, at $6 point, Gibraltar, I thought might give us a run for our money. Led them last start, change of tactics, look good, and think that if it can take improvement in that role of a pacemaker, doing it from the top, it'll be hard to beat. Race six, number two, Cosmic Gem at $3.40. I thought we might go again after not handling the rising class. Comes back to weaker company this afternoon. Race three, horse seven, race five, each way, number two. Race six, number two, my best at Belmont.
Speaker 2Hey, Darren, looking forward to your inside running. Great to have Marty Young back on the airways of SEN Turf these days. So we'll have a comprehensive preview on SEN Turf, eight o'clock every Saturday morning. If you're in WA on SEN Turf, if you're not, just the sports entertainment, the SEN app, this gives you a host of different options you can listen to, including, of course, inside running on SEN Turf. So all you need to do is download the app. It's pretty simple.
Speaker 23Looking forward to it, Darren. Thanks, mate.
Speaker 2You're a beautiful man. There's Darren McCauley. It's 11.33. We'll take a break. We'll talk some greyhound racing next. Georgie Ferugia and our special guest is Jason Thompson.
Speaker 1Join the conversation. Text us on 0499 736 736. Live across Australia, this is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 25Time for the weekly chase with Jason Adams and Georgie Ferugia.
Speaker 26...then was Irenka Brett. As striking the front, wider out was Promote Tilly. Promote Tilly got clear. He's a pearl, charging up around the outside of Consigliere. Then came Kiwi Avoca further back. Irenka Brett trying to get going from the back was Storm Hustler. And out towards the tail then was Promote Tilly. But, oh, it's Promote Tilly in front, coming at it, Consigliere. And up on the inside, he's a pearl. He's a pearl, beat Promote Tilly.
Speaker 2That was the Tamora Cup there on Sunday. He's a pearl, books his place into the Million Dollar Chase. So does Consigliere, who finished third or into the semifinals now. And they're trained. ...and they're trained. ...by the champion trainer, Jason Thompson. And he joins us now. G'day, Jase. Yeah, g'day, Gareth. That's your go, isn't it? Go to Tamora, qualify, and then try and win a Million Dollar Chase. Are they going to stay in your name this year?
Speaker 27Yeah, yeah, no, I'll be taking them up. Beautiful. I'll drive and stay at Andy's. Yeah. Get up there the day before. And dogs obviously come from there. And, yeah, no, they'll just stay at home throughout this series.
Speaker 2Yeah, it's one race that you haven't won. No, it'd be nice to, though. It would be, wouldn't it? The bank balance would be a lot better. But do you think you've got the... ...cattle to do it this year?
Speaker 27I... You only need one. Yes. And I reckon we've got... We're only taking two, because Dramatical pulled up a bit average... Okay. ...after Sunday night. So I don't know how long he'll be off. But, yeah, so it'll just be those two. And the one thing, they've got great Wentworth Park for them. We don't have to go and trial them. Yeah. You know, they've probably had more races there than anywhere else. So, I mean, he's a Perl's favourite for the Easter Egg earlier in the year. So, very... I'd be pleased that they're both qualified. So, we'll just keep them at home now, take them over and get up there for the semis.
Speaker 2And you find that tomorrow is the best venue to try and qualify these dogs, because it gives you that break now to really prime them up for the semifinal night?
Speaker 27Yeah, well, that's why I choose to go there. I mean, we've been there three times with Plaintiff, who won there explicit, and now these two. So, the way we sort of plan this series out is to try and qualify, you know, the main one, if not sort of two there, and then, you know, you've got plenty of time. So, if they need a trial, trial them up there, or in the case of these two, they'll just stay at home and take over at home, and we just go straight to the semis.
Speaker 2Yeah. Who's the better dog at Wentworth Park?
Speaker 27I think definitely he's a Perl. Yeah. And Sigley, yeah. Look, he's just a terrific race dog, but I've got no doubt he's a Perl. I've got a very good opinion of the dog. I've got a very good opinion of the dog, and I've got a very good opinion of the dog. So, he's definitely been faster in his wins here at Wentworth Park, and I think the prep that he's going to have, I'm just hoping that he, you know, he's nice and sharp when he gets back there and can start and show his early speed.
Speaker 2Yeah. I mean, you've got this wonderful association with the Lords these days.
Speaker 27Yeah, we're very lucky. Yeah. They've got a lot of dogs. They've got a lot, a stack of young ones coming through. So, we're in a very privileged position that, you know, they've got a lot of dogs. They choose to send their better dogs to home, and it's, we haven't been going too long, but we've had a pretty good run so far, and hopefully it continues.
Speaker 2So, they're training still. Why are they doing that then? What's their, what's their...
Speaker 27Look, I think, you know, they breed, they whelp them down, rear them, break them in, pre-train them and race them, and to then add the factor of travelling interstate, it's a lot. So, Andy and Jodie are very comfortable doing what they're doing, and obviously so are we. And, yeah, we just look forward that, you know, it continues on, and I'm sure with what he's got coming through, hopefully it should.
Speaker 2Now, you've got a slot in the Phoenix once again. You're teaming up with the Lords. That's right, isn't it? So, they're probably thinking he's a pearl then as their number one chance for the Phoenix. But you did promise me that if I got a slot that we'd be able to do a deal, Jason. So, what dog have you got for me? Will he be ready to go?
Speaker 27Possibly, but, I mean, yeah, the dog that won it last year wasn't chosen until two weeks before the race.
Speaker 2That's a good point you make.
Speaker 27Wasn't even in our kennel. So, let's just, a lot of water to go under the bridge. I mean, all these dogs that are going to win. I've never seen so many dogs three or four months out from a race that are going to win a race that don't win it. So, no.
Speaker 2I can't wait as long as you, because I've got my job on the line here. Like, if I stuff this up, I'm in trouble. It wouldn't be the first time. No, no, no. It wouldn't be the first time. So, I need your help. So, yeah, if you find something, let us know.
Speaker 27Always willing to help you.
Speaker 2Yeah, thank you, Jason, because if it wasn't for me, let's be honest, you wouldn't have done this.
Speaker 27Wouldn't have even been in the race.
Speaker 2No. Now, I can't believe you let the lords in. Geez, they must be looking after you. I thought you would have said you can get, we'll have your dog, but you get your own slot.
Speaker 27Yeah, no, no. I know you'll look after us better. Yeah, yes. One saved up for you that we can't disclose yet, that's for sure.
Speaker 2Yeah. We won't tell anyone. Any winners coming up for us around the corner? Something for us battlers?
Speaker 27Yeah, hopefully tomorrow night in Adelaide. I like Spring Victoria, who's in the Oaks, and I give her a really good chance. And also, Inclination in the Derby, but the young dog that we've got at Sandown, I really like him. He's going nuclear, haven't done a lot with him, and he's, yeah, I think he's a pretty nice dog. He's in the first tomorrow at Sandown.
Speaker 2Don't show him off too much, all right? No, try not to. Keep him under wraps. Thanks for that, Jase. Appreciate it, Tom. No worries. There we go. Jason Thompson, the champion greyhound racing trainer. Georgie, what did you learn?
Speaker 28What about that race at Tamora?
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 28He's a pearl consigliere, storm hustler, Indy Melbourne, who's a Group 1 winner, and Dramatical is a Group 1 winner as well.
Speaker 2That's why the Million Dollar Chase works. Because greyhound racing in New South Wales, they want to get these type of dogs to these regional venues. Yeah, it does. And it gets the racing fan an opportunity to see some of the best athletes in greyhound racing to a venue like that. If they didn't have the Million Dollar Chase, there's no way Jason Thompson's going to Tamora.
Speaker 28And, I mean, Jase spoke about the fact that he had explicit there. I mean, you know, a greyhound that ended up winning $2 million. So you're right. Those three now qualify through. There hasn't been much change, Gareth, on Bet365 in regards to them. The market jungle, Johnny, is still the $6 favourite. Consigliere, second favourite at $13, along with storm hustler.
Speaker 2What's he's a pearl?
Speaker 28He's a pearl, $17.
Speaker 2Well, you have to have a bet there, don't you?
Speaker 28Yeah, and you've got to have a bet on off the chart for me. I keep saying this at $15. Unbeaten at Wentworth Park, it's a track that I think obviously does suit him winning the Golden Easter Egg there. So, yeah, that series will continue to push forward.
Speaker 2Semi-final night, you can't put a paw wrong, because if you do, you don't make the final. And then we'll be there. We'll be there for the final night. I'm looking forward to it, George.
Speaker 28Yeah, it will be absolutely fantastic. Now, he didn't give away too much about the Phoenix, but congratulations on getting a slot through SEN. Appreciate that. This is fantastic.
Speaker 2He's teaming up with the Lords. That surprised me a little bit. Obviously, they've got this association now, but they're going to be powerful, aren't they?
Speaker 28Big time. And I think it's a no-brainer to associate or to join forces, because Andy Lord is breeding probably the highest quality of greyhound. He's going to be in the country as it stands right now, so they probably don't have to look too far outside their backyard, to be honest. Yeah.
Speaker 2We're going to take a break. I'm going to come back with plenty more. This is the Weekly Chase on Giddy Up this Wednesday.
Speaker 1Join the conversation. Text us on 0499 736 736. Live across Australia, this is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 2This is the Weekly Chase. We're gonna talk about Phoenix now, Georgie Faruja, as we wrap up, of course, Giddy Up Talking Greyhound Racing. The slot holders for the Phoenix sports bet. Good luck to them. They've won it twice. They won't win it again. David Burke Constructions. Won it last year. They got lucky. Awesome Lodge. They won it. It's explicit. Yes. Tabcorp. The Green Army haven't won it yet, have they? No. J&K Racing, Joshie Famosa, first time. Yeah, and Corey Lee. Yeah. Good luck to them. Lakeview Sires. They've got no good greyhounds, so I don't know how they can win.
Speaker 28Yeah, probably two pretty talented greyhounds. Which way do you go? Do you wait for somebody else to grab wrongly accused and you put off the chart in, so you've got a two for the price of oney?
Speaker 2If I was them, I'd go off the chart and then I'd be able to shop around the other dog because you're going to get the best. But if they own it, you're going to get the whole million if he wins. I'd probably shop around. I'd be off the chart. So you ring me down. It's a little bit of an insurance bet there, isn't it?
Speaker 28Yeah.
Speaker 2Could off the chart beat the organised crime? Wrongly accused. Wrongly accused, yeah. This is killing me, this.
Speaker 28Probably a little bit more unlikely at the Meadows than it would be at, say, Wentworth Park.
Speaker 2And tactics are different because as Jason Thompson pointed out, he picked his dog in the last couple of weeks when he won. But I haven't got that luxury here. I've got to get mine nice and early in a way. So we can start to promote it and build the narrative around it, I reckon.
Speaker 28It's the same thing every year. There's no rhyme or reason. I mean, Ladbrokes went early and won it. Sometimes you can go late and win it. Sometimes you can pick a dog and it gets injured and you can't. I think Explicit was locked in pretty quickly as well for the Thompsons. So yeah, I mean, it depends on what you want your narrative to be. I mean, I'm tipping that SEN would already be on the lookout, right?
Speaker 2Yeah. Well, you're the man who's looking out for us, so hopefully. But who should I go for then? Give me some names.
Speaker 28Look, to Jason's point, it makes sense. I mean, you're two or three months out. In greyhound racing, that is an eternity. Yes. So you can't really bank on even a dog like Wrongly Accused. But look, again, there's going to be some dogs that once, you know what really starts to heat up when the Melbourne Cup Prelude start? That's when you make your move. Yeah, I think so because you can get some interstate greyhounds coming and, you know, they can run some pretty quick time and they sort of just sit on the road.
Speaker 2And the problems say that, like, this is the challenge that we've got, which we're up to the challenge. We've taken on these big organisations like Sportsbet and Tapcourt before. They've got the scope to do better deals than what we probably can do, I would imagine.
Speaker 28I think it's a little bit AFL draft-ish when you hear clubs say, we're just going to go for the best talent available. And I think SEN did that with Amron Boy. We were stiff. Pound for pound, while she's fast, was the quickest in the country. But he was hardly far behind her. I mean, he was a star. So I think if you can stick to those sort of things, I think you'll be, you know, you won't go wrong. The other, the funny thing with all of this is that the much vaunted box draw, brands have won it from four, five, six. I'm not, you know, look, if box one came to SEN, you're not going to knock it back.
Speaker 2I've got that theory with the box draw. Like you want to go box one in a normal world, if it's just any old Saturday, night at the meadows, then that's the draw that you want. But when they're playing a bloody musical before the start and the roar of the crowd and you get all the youngsters near the boxes, these dogs can't hear the lure. It is a big.
Speaker 28Because it's hit and miss. It is a big atmosphere, isn't it? The Phoenix. It is as overtaken anything. Probably we've seen the Irish Derby at Shelbourne Park this week. That atmosphere is just electric. And that run up of the lure is longer and the crowd goes absolutely crazy. But the Phoenix, wouldn't be too far behind.
Speaker 2I need to get some headphones or something for the dog and then turn it on. Can you do that? Or is that against the rules? Noise cancelling. And then turn it on when they're about to jump. Yeah, I doubt you'll get that through, brother. We'll see what happens. Hey, we'll take a break. We'll come back and we'll discuss the big night at Angle Park tomorrow night.
Speaker 1Join the conversation. Text us on 0499 736 736. This is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 2This is Giddy Up. Thanks to Bet365. What about the Emerald, Georgie?
Speaker 28Yeah, Johnny Barbera. Johnny boy. Going one-two, getting the Quinella, impetuously winning the race in 16.25, which is just electric. Again, we mention this all the time. It's just a fantastic series. And the qualification is the eight fastest greyhounds, not the heat winners. And in the consolation, one of the heat winners who didn't make the final, Electrojet, won the consolation. So, again, this time it comes around every year, but the Emerald is certainly well patronised by Victorian participants. $25,000 to the winner, so nothing to sneeze at.
Speaker 2Yeah. What are we doing in Adelaide tomorrow?
Speaker 28Yeah, look, we've got to mention this because it's certainly very Victorian-centric. I mean, Jason Thompson has the favourite with Spring Victoria off Box 7 in the SA Oaks at around 360, but it is a very tight market. David Gill has the pink with all I see at 380, dashing Starlet at 390. The other Victorian... The other Victorian pure silk at $4.20, so it's very close there. In the Derby, seven of the eight finalists are Victorian-trained. And the Anthony Azapati Kenya talk now has been backed from $3 into $2.15. Inclination, who Jason spoke about, is at $6. Then the two greyhounds in the Britain camp, Radar O'Reilly and Mapunga Spirit, drawn quite well. Jason Thompson also has Bold Thruster, who's a greyhound who's a little bit slow early, but really powerful. I was to the line. The WA greyhound has not put a foot wrong. Four starts for four wins, but it's $13 against some of these Victorians. Kenya talk now, certainly going places. You talk about a Phoenix. I think this is one that Anthony Azapati would like to get to town to show everybody how quick it is because its runs provincially have been amazing. And then it won at the Meadows midweek and it ran 29.70 odd. So it's got a big future. Kenya talk now.
Speaker 2Yeah. When do you start to put your foot down and say, hello, I'm... I'm here for a Phoenix. When is it too late?
Speaker 28Oh, look, last year was the latest I've seen probably. I mean, there's been a couple of scratchings where there's been some greyhounds that have need to enter, but it happens the other way too, Gareth. I think some trainers want to put their hand up and contact you. I've seen that in the past as well. I'm not giving out my number, but maybe get in contact with you, Georgie. Well, not yet, but you know what I mean? I mean, they would say, listen, why don't you consider my number? Why don't you consider my greyhound for this race?
Speaker 2Have you got a dog that we should consider?
Speaker 28No, mine aren't quick enough for this. Apart from wrongly accused? Look, this is, yeah. I mean, I know it's only the, well, when we say only the Derby, I mean, if Kenya talk now then goes out and wins the Adelaide Cup against wrongly accused and co, then all of a sudden, you know, some of these greyhounds come into contention.
Speaker 2If I didn't, if racing greyhound racing South Australia had enough money, I would buy a slot and the winner of the Adelaide Cup goes.
Speaker 28Well, that's the disappointing part about, um, I think racing Queensland, we're doing it great with, with, with the flame, weren't they? Like it was a fantastic race and the winner won out into a spot. And so, uh, yeah, it's a shame that that, um, hasn't continued, but now look, we've got eight worthy finalists. Any winners tomorrow night? Yeah, we do. We've got a couple now. Uh, race eight, number seven, Paul Levisa. Really like this greyhound over 600 meters. She's so versatile. She's going to have an early speed battle with Espoir, but I think Paul Levisa. Can win the race race eight, number seven, race nine, number one, ivory inside drawn really well. Clearly does its best racing drawn closer to the fence. Really nice winner at the meadows last start and a little bit of an each way play. I think Gareth in race 11, number one, gold code, uh, absolutely loves the red. It's a good little race. There's greyhounds like a zero, uh, Aston, uh, Aquitaine in the race, little monkey eventuates a good race. But where gold code is drawn, that's why I'm saying, I think it's an each way play for sure.
Speaker 2George, it's a great time of year. There's plenty happening. Million dollar chase. And once the million dollar chase is finished and then the attention really turns to Victoria. You're, you're on channel seven for the million dollar chase. You're up and about. I think you're, I'm going to try and get, you have to come with me.
Speaker 28Well, I'm there, but I mean, yeah, I might just be. No, we need to put makeup on you and away you go.
Speaker 2We'll see how we go. It's going to be a big night. So much history.
Speaker 28Um, do you believe they're selling tickets sort of seat by seat in the grandstand? It could be the biggest greyhound, um, crowd we've seen for. I don't know.
Speaker 2I asked me Kelly about this. They go, well, I haven't got a number until everyone can't fit anymore. That's it's incredible. Okay. All right. Then thanks for that, George. Have a good one, man. And thanks for your company on giddy up. It's been such a busy show on this Wednesday from Kingsley Bartholomew, of course, for beyond the barriers. The Wednesday agenda was the best Wednesday agenda that we've had with Troy Causton's and also of course, Calvin McAvoy. We had a bag of tips today. So hopefully we can find you a few winners across the three codes, Darren McCoy with some breaking news for the best from the West. So we had it all today. You can listen to all those interviews and segments by subscribing to giddy up with Gareth Hall with your local podcast subscriber. But for now, have a great day and I'll be back tomorrow morning from eight o'clock.
