Speaker 1giddy up it's time for stable mail this man will play a
Speaker 2part both in melbourne but especially in sydney i speak of the champion trainer joe pride good morning joe yeah good morning um it is some week isn't it yes yeah in both places is it cool for the cup day everest day great day child wolf's got the rain i guess that he that he wants has he got enough rain to beat autumn glow um i think
Speaker 3so yeah there's a bit more this morning so um i think that that tracks you know i'm assuming anyway given i thought we got the other night it's going to be pretty pretty well affected um and um you know i think it's one of the one of the things that he possibly needs to to beat that me you know we're racing against a few times and be competitive against it but we've also some of the competitions we've been against her have been pretty moderately run affairs you know where i just don't feel like it's uh you're seeing the best version of my horse um so we've hopefully been a pretty genuine Saturday they were going
Speaker 2then they weren't going but now she is going pride of jenny when you heard the news there um that must have put a big smile on your face joe
Speaker 3oh yes yes and no i mean she's another very um so you know healthy respect for her but um yeah i think in in terms of the context of trying to beat not trying to beat pride of jenny but trying to beat um autumn glow yes um she she should help us um ensure a decent uh ensure a decent tempo and a you know hopefully good fair contest where the best
Speaker 2horse wins yes well we're guaranteed now even if it's a small field to get a strong gallop with her in the race um and we all know what child wolf can do off a strong gallop
Speaker 3yeah yeah it's definitely the best version of him you know it's four four group ones uh they've all been you know um good contests with with plenty of tempo and and that's um to say that's the best
Speaker 2version of him so it's only a small field i nearly would have preferred just to have four in it or even three um yeah child wolf autumn autumn glow and pride of jenny like that is a race worth going to ranwick
Speaker 3to watch yeah it's a
Speaker 2race that the um
Speaker 3doesn't need sort of uh any extras in there and they'll you know they'll obviously dominate the betting those those three horses anyway so um look can't wait i think it's going to be a it's going to be a great race it's a shame it's on so late in the day actually i thought maybe i was hoping it would be before all the sprint races because the track's going to be pretty carved up at that point and um yeah i just think it's sort of not lost on the program but i'm not gonna be honest with you i'm not a big fan of 10 races on a card um but you know if that's helps turn over and everything else but i think on a day like this should be all about quality and you know having having these horses run after you know a couple hundred other horses have run over the track i'm not sure that's the best in their best interest yeah
Speaker 2it'll be interesting to see how this track does hold up with all that rain um that has fallen especially on that tuesday and who knows how much rain will come friday and saturday um i've been we've had you on this show and i've listened to you on other interviews like i think it's the blinkers with the combination of
Speaker 3a decent tempo um he runs a rating really highly at the moment so yeah i'm i'm not sure if it's as much as what it was last year from the epson to the to the king charles but um i think it's the blinkers with the um probably doesn't need to improve as much as last year so i don't know tricky tricky question like to actually quantify um i just think you'll see the very best of cheer wolf on saturday you know and if that's good enough to measure up well we can we can um we'll see an exciting race yeah
Speaker 2i can't wait for that race the emirates is going to be a great spectacle the city stakes are beauty but this is the race that i'm really looking forward to autumn glow charvel from pride of jenny um and then because it's going to be on a rain affected track most likely and you've got pride of jenny in the race is that rule out now backing
Speaker 3up to the cox plate no no no no no um look probably easier to quantify that than the blinkers question yeah um i would say with 30 chance of going to the cox plate 70 chance of waiting for um yeah waiting for champions day
Speaker 2because it's a like you have a look at the cox play it's going to be a truly run race as well with a couple of kiramar sources like a light infantryman and even land legend that did what he did there last week um so yeah he's got a few good options char wolf and i guess you wish there were a few weeks apart you could have gone in all of
Speaker 3them basically yeah yeah yeah for sure um yeah the weaker parts of the killer it's yeah it is it is close you know um what about
Speaker 2attic tap back to the 1300 meters and what did you make of him there in the epsom
Speaker 3oh look it's a disappointing result yes um i sort of anticipated us getting in a pretty serious contest that day and having a bit of tempo on and you know i was disappointed um he's straight up around them and and then it was left left wanting in the straight for good reason um just sort of thought of bringing him back in trip he's been successful in getting some speed into his legs and um i think he'll run well here but better to start after no
Speaker 2and that will be the golden eagle when he steps up to the 1500 meters so um that's how he can race eight the silver eagle then you've got a couple of chances in the sydney stakes cold crusher and king secret
Speaker 3yeah um cold crusher running this race three times and runs well in every year and starts starts to sort of prioritize every year i think his biggest beating margins less than two lengths in this race yeah so he's uh he's sort of constantly underrated by the market this horse but that's all right um going well had his normal run back that he has at warwick farm and likes a wet king secret disappointing last start pretty sure he's just looking for the blinkers and he's got them on for the first time saturday wet track wouldn't be an issue for him see him running really well
Speaker 2and then in the saint ledger stakes you've got anthracite that was so brave the other day to do it all the way um juji kibose the race he won a metro but couldn't get a start in a corfell cup and many say that he would chance at the bottom of the weights in the Caulfield Cup so I guess he's the horse to beat there as well.
Speaker 3good chance we won't go around saturday i'll probably wait till next week rose hill gold cup is something i've got on the yeah in plans for him but i might want to run in between so probably unlikely to run at this stage on saturday and
Speaker 2then the old boy the nine-year-old private eye comes to caulfield we know he loves the track and distance 1400 meters um he looks ready to win this race yeah yeah he's in he's
Speaker 3in great shape he won it last year yeah and um he's at the stage of his life now we've got to handpick his fights a bit for him yeah and um and that's what this is quite clearly you know you're gonna run for more prize money up here last week but um just wanting to see him win and i think this is the right uh the right contest for him market tells me it is i i'll be honest with you i don't do a lot of melbourne form so i'm not really across his opposition i know of them but not really across his opposition but i'm not really across his opposition but the market tells me we've found the right race for him and um he'll come down tonight i think it's his 16th interstate trip um a real warrior so he'll be uh he'll be the punters elect on saturday for
Speaker 2sure can you compare him to this time last year no look i mean
Speaker 3off the run against cosmic crusader um going going just as well um he looks just as well as he did this time last year disappointing run there when he didn't get to the end of the run there when he didn't get to the end of the run there when he didn't get to the end of the run you know on speed uh two two back then i thought the other day he was good but nash just said he he felt the very firm ground a little bit there which you know probably gonna get something similar at caulfield i'm not sure how caulfield's racing at the moment but i hope there's a little he can just get his toe in a little bit but um he's in terrific shape
Speaker 2i don't know if you'll be able to do just that i reckon it'd be it'd be a it'd be a firm track come saturday there would that be a concern if they go to a good three oh yeah look i think
Speaker 3he's okay it's not it's not like he just can't perform one of those i just think i prefer him any horse that age really just the track with a little bit of giving it so if they stop preparing tracks uh no it'll be good for it'll
Speaker 2be good for the start with but um we had a little bit of rain at the start of the week um and but it's it's going to be good weather there friday saturday so he's
Speaker 3early ish in the day yeah you might be
Speaker 2right i want to see him um four or five four or five yeah he's race four race five yeah so you might be right you're probably right at the half time mark where it's starting to dry out um in the second half of the card so you'll be right joe nothing to worry about hey i get this question i've got a host do you know how the putters know best sometimes joe and every time we talk about arctic you know they go why are you getting him out to 2000 meters i don't know no that was from david and josh and then 753 um about getting out would you ever get him out to 2000 meters yeah look
Speaker 3there yeah look yeah good chance good chance you will but i mean you've only got to look at his last run to see why we're not going to 2000 meters yeah yeah i mean what what i'm trying to do and and maybe i haven't explained it well enough but what i'm trying to do is make with any horse but this let's talk specifically about this horse make the best possible attica we can you know as a race and that's my job as a trainer you know and punners think it's to deliver a horse to the races they can have a bet on a saturday but it's it's to make this the best possible version of himself he can be and this horse is by lonro out of a street cry mayor right who was a really good 1400 meter horse he was a lazy cult who was probably fortunate enough to beat up on some substandard three-year-olds in the spring and win a group one over 2000 meters now he hasn't got the pedigree and he isn't really the type that i would think he's required to make a 2000 meter plus horse which a lot of people have been telling me it's what he is now now that he's gelded he's much faster he's got a lot more intent in everything he does and that was pretty obvious there when you look at his the way he's come back this preparation so to stretch him out over ground now i'm not giving him the best possible horse but i'm going to make him a faster horse which was where the better prize money is so it's an ongoing experiment that's probably going to take six to twelve months and i can't do it i don't want to do it the other way around if i stretch him out over ground now i'm going to dull his speed and i could never make a fast horse out of him so that makes sense that's what that's what that's what it's about if that if that makes
Speaker 2sense yeah 100 child warfare you're going to 2000 and we stay at the mile for him on champions day yeah
Speaker 3i'm not sure i'm not sure actually um it was probably a bit of it would come down to you know what happens on on saturday obviously but um and you know can he if he can't beat autumn glow on saturday yeah there's probably a bit of you know given what's in his favor it's probably a bit ambitious if she's in that mile to want to race against her again so um i'm i'm open-minded if i gave you a
Speaker 2hundred dollars this weekend joe what would you do with it i'm
Speaker 3having a straight on cheer wolf yeah
Speaker 2geez you've been well supported you got six dollars this time last week he's into three dollars fifty now so the putters agree with you um we wish you the best of luck mate we appreciate you coming on the show as you always do um yeah bring on that king charles it's going to be a beauty great thanks very much there's joe pride 15 minutes past eight we're going to take a break on the other side of it bjorn baker he's trying to win an everest he's trying to win a sydney stakes and he's trying to win a caulfield cup with his derby winner on saturday join the conversation text
Speaker 1us on 0 4 9 7 3 6 7 3 6 live across australia this is giddy up with
Speaker 2gareth hall welcome back to giddy up all thanks to bet 365 this is giddy up on this thursday as we get set for caulfield cup day and everest day um plenty of feedback on my car in rising jacket um a lot of people loving it so as i said i think it's going to be a great day for the you can purchase them at the races or go to sackburton.com um but george says you're a bandwagon person now gareth to me that's really disappointing as a true aussie uh let's hope you get beat that's a bit i'll jump on bjorn baker's bandwagon at the moment he's on fire and he joins us now hello to you bjorn thanks for joining us yeah
Speaker 4thanks gareth thanks for having me on um it's
Speaker 2been a big week yeah it's an
Speaker 4exciting week obviously uh looking forward to the weekend there's a lot going on um only one thing worse than being busy and it's been quiet yeah yes what
Speaker 2about um more woven how's
Speaker 4he pulled up pretty good yeah happy with him um so he's uh gonna have an easy go tomorrow and we'll just see how we go over the next few days yep
Speaker 2so is he locked in for a cox plate or you're just keeping a close eye on him and if he pleases you then you'll confirm that he'll be going to that great race on saturday week that's it yep beautiful um hopefully you're coming because we we want to see you at the giddy up luncheon on that friday at the ascot vale hotel is it a sellout yeah it's a sellout already as soon as i've mentioned your name how much it's two hundred dollars it's
Speaker 4a good hundred dollars good drink package it's poor entertainment and bad opinions you're joking there'll be a lot of expired beers and food down
Speaker 2there well you're going to give a bit of your percentage to overpass and all that we might give away you know i don't know we'll do something we'll do something we'll do something we'll do something i think trent's coming along trent buster um j mac will be there you'll be
Speaker 4wanting to get some extra rations for the troops if trent lee's biscuits going what about on
Speaker 2saturday um let's go through your runners where do you want it we'll start with the 150th running of the caulfield cup can you do it with green spaces from gate 18
Speaker 4i think he's been building nicely last time didn't suit too much the they went really um didn't go overly quick in the metropolitan gate 18 obviously makes it really tough we're gonna probably need a heap of luck and and i think if we roll forward we're not going to be able to finish off so it is a race they tend to go quick enough um if you can get back relax uh and he gets the brakes maybe he's in there with a show is he a better
Speaker 2chance at a melbourne or a caulfield cup in your
Speaker 4eyes uh well we'd want him to to hit the line well to go forward to a melbourne cup but your gate 18 could make it tricky at
Speaker 2caulfield but your jock is on fire at the moment um she's always been a really good jockey but i reckon she's elevated herself in the last six months especially
Speaker 4rachel king yeah it does help you get on good horses and uh if it
Speaker 2wasn't for you yeah you
Speaker 4elevated me i've elevated her but i think it comes down to wall wave and it's definitely helped uh but she is riding really well she rides well in the big time races yeah and one thing that i can't uh talk about rachel and not say she's a very very hard worker she does a lot of work at home she's at warwick farm two or three times a week and um she's crucial in terms of educating our young horses and trial trialing a lot of them as well so um they're part of it she does put in the hard work and and she definitely deserves what uh she's getting at the moment just another jock
Speaker 2basically you'll put on the map yeah and let's be honest um dance to the boom uh race three eleven dollars eric caulfield first up yeah
Speaker 4the last two proofs probably haven't been up to watch she's capable of. She isn't one of those. She's got a good gait. And I would love this race to be 1,200, but 1,100, she can probably run well fresh. She's definitely fit enough. And hopefully she can get a gun run just not far off them.
Speaker 2You've got Unleashing firing. She's on fire at the moment. Can she win again?
Speaker 4Yeah, I think she's going well. It's not a couple of scratching. So I think she has got a really good turn of foot. I've also got Polo Fied in the race. She'll roll forward. Doesn't seem to be a whole heap of pressure there. But Unleashing, she can handle all tracks. And I do think she's actually better off when she's sort of held up. If they don't go overly quick, it won't work against her. And she should be able to finish off and be very strong at the finish.
Speaker 2So you are in the Budgie Smuggler. They were nearly equal favorites there a few starts back. But so you are on a winning streak. He's looking for three on the trot. And the Budgie Smuggler is looking to bounce back to some of his best form. Can he do that on Saturday and beat So You Are in a St.
Speaker 4Ledger? Yeah, probably not too much between them. On recent form, you'd go So You Are. The Budgie Smuggler, last time it didn't work out, he's sort of outside lead. They didn't go overly quick. In some ways, it would have probably turned him to roll to the front. If there's any rain around the wood, it's better for him. He doesn't mind the cut in the track. And 2,600 probably suits pretty well. He's sort of boxed on in the Metropolitan. So he's not out of it. So probably leaning that way just purely because he does have the form, current form. He's definitely in great order. He'll open his gallop well on Tuesday. And he'll be able to put himself forward out of trouble.
Speaker 2All right. And then we go to the race that you will play a strong hand in. And it is the Sydney Stakes. In fact, it is the Toyota Forklift Sydney Stakes. Toyota Forklift. Of course, you're the face of that organization. Overpass, gate 19, first up. We all know that he's a dynamite horse first up. Can he win from that gate, barrier 19?
Speaker 4Well, Toyota Forklifts and Overpass. Yeah. Himmler, work hard all day, every day, reliable, down, never break down, always work, always there, hard workers, and lift by the front. But Overpass is in great order. Of course, he was an ascot in the middle of the year, went a fantastic race in the King's Stand. He's won this race two years ago. We actually ran a quicker race in the Everest, won a bill in the patina. We know time doesn't always count. But he's in good order. But it's just an awkward gate. Obviously, a bit of a concern with the weather. We know he can get through a soft track really well. But if he gets sort of soft seven and a heavy eight, we might not be quite at his best. And from that gate, he probably needs to be. Pericles is going well. I thought his first up run was good. He looks better. And he's a class horse. So if it does become a little bit demanding and get a gun run, I think he's on a tough race. This next one is going to struggle.
Speaker 2Do you start Overpass regardless?
Speaker 4Yeah. Yep. Yep. Yeah. You have to, I think, as part of the race conditions with the Sydney Stakes is an emergency for the Everest.
Speaker 2Oh, there you go. Blue Dawn. She's got 51 on her back. She's been thrown in the deep end in the Everest. Your thoughts about her chances?
Speaker 4Yeah, she is thrown in the deep end. But she's the youth in the race, only the full start. She won first start off one trial at 1,100 in the kindergarten on a soft track. So I do think she'll get through a wet track pretty well. She's been on firm tracks, and she's sort of been, you know, close to the track record in the last couple at Rose Hill. So I do think she's had a perfect preparation up to the 1,200, gets in with no weight. Of course, Jamie Mellon, who's one of the really top jockeys in the country, one of the best jockeys undoubtedly that can ride the weight. So from that point of view, we've got a little bit of confidence. I think she looks better than she ever has, and she's got a really good fitness base, and she's got speed. So I expect her, if she's not leading, she'll be very close to it.
Speaker 2What's your expectations with the new market winner Cabela's in the Everest?
Speaker 4Yeah, a big weather watch. I actually think he's going better than his first up run. He's improved. He looks great. I would prefer to see him on a good track, though. I think even first up, he's struggled. If the track was a soft five, I wouldn't be too worried, but a lot will depend on how the next two days go. But I think even prior to the new market, he was very good when he came second to Joel. I think he's going to be better than his first up run. And I've got a feeling he's building that way. He might not be completely out of it for a top half finish anyway.
Speaker 2What about within the law first up in the Silver Eagle?
Speaker 4Yeah, tough race, no doubt about it. You've only got to look through if it starts top to bottom. But she can be very good. Last preparation, she's a little bit mixed. She'll probably be able to get back in the second half. And if she can finish off, we'll be happy enough going towards it. The Golden Eagle.
Speaker 2All right. Then if I gave you $100, what would you do with it this weekend?
Speaker 4Oh, $100. I'd put it on unleashing.
Speaker 2Yes. Race three horse aid unleashing for Jason Collett in race three at Round Week. Any winners today? Imperial Royale and also the horse named after you, Stallone.
Speaker 4Yes. I'm about to go to the gym actually. Are you really? I won't be living up to that name. So Imperial Royale's probably the better of them. She's a good chance. She's building nicely up in Trip a little bit suits.
Speaker 2And congratulations as well. I know we mentioned it from the top, but you're a Caulfield Giddies winning trainer now. You've won the Golden Rose. He's some horse more woven. Unbelievable what he's been able to do. The sort of state.
Speaker 4He's fantastic. And yeah, I must say it's been a big few weeks to get a colt like that. Possibly a once in a lifetime colt. But he's got a great attitude. He's good looking and he can go forward. He can relax off them. And he's just got so many, um, I guess, different skills at the stage of his racing life. So he's, uh, he's made us look all good. That's for sure.
Speaker 2Has he found a home yet after his racing career? Obviously the phone would be ringing off the hook. Surely as a Golden Rose and Caulfield, Guinea's champ, that was the $2 favorite for the magic millions before he was scratched when he shouldn't have been scratched.
Speaker 4Favourite, Gareth. It was a tough day, mate.
Speaker 2He would have been worth an extra $5 million if he won the magic millions.
Speaker 4Oh, I guess, uh. Star 2 year old. Yeah. And Superstar 3 year old. The highs and lows of racing. He hasn't got a home yet. Um, but I think that possibly could, we'll see what happens, uh, next week. Maybe after the Cox plate, if we get there. All right. Um, and I think Jim Clark, he bought him. He's buying a lot of good horses. And, um, he'll be able to, uh, the, the manage that sale process that can get fairly complicated, but I'd like to hope that, uh, he's going to get a great chance at studs. I can't wait to train his offspring.
Speaker 2Beautiful. We'll have the limousine pick you up from the airport to make sure you get to the Ascot Vale Hotel. We can't wait for you. And we appreciate you joining us as always here on Giddy Up on this Thursday morning.
Speaker 4Yeah. If I go next Friday, does it mean you don't hand me on the phone like this every week? A hundred percent.
Speaker 2Well, as you pointed out, if you weren't going any good, I wouldn't be handing you. But unfortunately, like, uh, for you, for your sake, obviously you are going pretty well. So we do have to talk to you.
Speaker 4Yeah, it's nice. It's nice, Gareth.
Speaker 2If you weren't, if you weren't trading winners, we would have, I would probably, I'd say good day to you, but we wouldn't need to talk to you at the end of the day, but you're a superstar trainer. The punters want to hear from you, Bjorn.
Speaker 4Yeah, even a blind squirrel can find the odd acorn. Good luck. Good luck punters. If you want to take Don K, you can rise in this weekend's a chance.
Speaker 2Do you reckon you can get him beat? Do you reckon he's beatable?
Speaker 4They're all beatable. It's a game. You got to back yourself.
Speaker 2Is he a better horse than Farlatt to come out of New Zealand?
Speaker 4You guys didn't kill him, but the Americans did. You claim him. Three of the first five in the inaugural racing, Australian Racing Hall of Fame were Kiwis and the British. The best horse in the world is a Kiwi, and you'll see him on Saturday. See you, folks.
Speaker 2Hey, go the, you'll get smashed in the rugby league Thursday night.
Speaker 4No, I don't think we will. I don't think we will. You guys are a little bit soft underbelly, physically and mentally. See you, team.
Speaker 2Merry Christmas. There's Bjorn Baker. Lunatic. But geez, he's flying at the moment. It's right on 8.30. We'll take a break. We'll come back and have a chat to Graham Begg and Clayton Douglas. We'll be my special guests here on Giddy Up Stable Mail.
Speaker 1Join the conversation. Text us on 0499 736 736. Live across Australia. This is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 2Welcome back to Giddy Up. This is Giddy Up Stable Mail. This Thursday morning, all thanks to Bet365. And don't forget, this Saturday, we're celebrating 150 years of history with the running of the Caulfield Cup. And tickets are still available, $65 with Ticket Tech. But I would hurry. Tickets are flying. So it's going to be a big day there at Caulfield. And Graham Begg will play a major part. He's got She's a Hustler engaged in this year's Sportsbet Caulfield Cup. And the champion trainer joins us. Graham, hello to you. Thanks for your time, as always. Yeah. Good morning. Can you win a Caulfield Cup with She's Out? a hustler well she'll
Speaker 5give it a good shake um she's getting back onto her preferred surface uh wasn't happy at all in the heavy ground at flemington uh and you know it was a very you know strong run race so just found her wanting the last 200 meters uh so you know we'll try to ride her to get a nice comfortable run getting a good rhythm and uh at least where she's drawn and allowed to be able to do that so there was a lot of
Speaker 2horses that got beat a long way um in that turnbull stakes there at flemington a few weeks back heading towards the caulfield cup so for us punters out there graham and with your experience did we just forget about that if we like horses like saran and she's a hustler and um back them to bounce back on top of the
Speaker 5ground yeah look i think uh that's certainly be the case it just depends on how much the run's taken out of them you know if it had been three weeks between runs it probably would say you know uh it'd probably be more beneficial but it is what it is but it was a very strong run race obviously the turnbull stakes and a few horses were found wanting in that ground but uh look let's we know that she likes good ground her form on good tracks is really good so um so we're looking forward to getting her back on saturday to possibly a good three
Speaker 2um and i guess barry six is perfect um there's a few of the the big dangers they've got tricky draws but um barry six seems to be the perfect draw really
Speaker 5yeah yeah she'll actually probably come into five with uh one of the emergencies drawn in that gate um so yeah it's a it's a it's a good uh start anyway so if you can draw well and uh and can be not too far off the speed but you know no worse than midfield and uh give yourself every opportunity i guess she's had the one run at the track and distance and been a winner when she won the zipping classic last year and i think that's a good start for her and i think that's a good start for her and i think that's a good start for her and i think that's a good start for her and i think that's a good start for her and i think that's a good start for her and i think that's a good start for her and i think she's got that in a favor
Speaker 2the henley home sprint over the thousand palatine he was very good um first up for your stable to win over 1100 meters he drops back to the thousand your thoughts there yeah
Speaker 5well we've kept him nice and fresh and well he's done very well in the stable since uh his first up win for us so we just felt that going to this race he's going to be more attractively weighted uh rather than go to last week which was wait for age so in with the 55 and a half on his back so he seems to be very well treated and uh i'm sure he'll run well and obviously he'll he'll relish being on a good track
Speaker 2too yeah and minimal's done a great job for you since you've had him
Speaker 5yeah his runs have been both been you know uh quite useful runs uh in good company um so he's come off having a long layoff so uh he's going well just drawn a bit of a trap gate about the outside gate barrier nine so he's probably gonna have to take his medicine and just go back a little bit uh and give himself every opportunity i hate seeing horses have to work up that hill yeah it tends to take a big toll on them um and uh it's pretty hard on them trying to finish their races off so we'll just have to give him as resting as run as possible so he can
Speaker 2win but we'll need a ton of luck from that
Speaker 5gate well it's just a bit of a trap gate barrier nine you know from from the 1400 so you know aren't you so uh anyway we'll uh we'll work him out and i'm sure you'll get a good ride were you happy with sakuma there
Speaker 2last saturday in the herbert power
Speaker 5yeah i thought he ran well i just thought he shortened up probably the last 200 meters of the race um you know i don't know whether it was the firm ground or uh going to 2400 for the first time this preparation and it was a pretty solidly run race so he's taken good benefit from from the run uh so we're very happy with him uh he is going to have a good run again before the cup he'll have a a 1400 meter jump out here at crampon eight days before so uh yeah so looking forward to getting him to flemington on the big track if i gave you a hundred dollars what would you do with it this weekend graham
Speaker 2what are we going to do we're going to have 50 each way she's a hustler love it in the caulfield cup race nine number 14 that would be something like um i know how much caulfield and what caulfield means to you but to win the 150th running of the caulfield cup um it's going to be a bit of a challenge for you to win the 150th running of the caulfield cup um it's going to be a big day there saturday absolutely yeah hey splashback trolled nicely yeah she went well she went well yeah splashy's going well so tell sammy yeah load up we need the rain do we or we're okay if the rain doesn't come oh i
Speaker 5think there's a little bit forecast for next week but she's pretty good on good ground as well but uh it certainly won't do her chances any harm if we do get a drop of rain but she runs in the mckeown stakes that day week so yeah she's prepping up well so we're very happy with her look out jigsaw
Speaker 2splashy's coming for you down the straight there at flemington there you go good on you mate thanks for that graham pleasure there's graham big there we're going to take a quick break on the other side of it clayton douglas will be my special guest of course the trainer of giga kick who's looking to win his second everest tomorrow or saturday afternoon
Speaker 1join the conversation text us on oh four double nine seven three six seven three six live across australia this is giddy up with gareth hall head up the

Speaker 2a horse he's been giga kick he's been close then to win his second everest and he rocks up um saturday afternoon from gate 12 nearly the forgotten horse but i know a couple of really good judges are starting to tip him definitely for a place um with the rain that's arrived in sydney town this week and his trainer's done a remarkable job with him and i speak of clayton douglas and he joins us now clayton good morning to you good morning gareth it's been a bit of a different build-up with giga kick this year heading towards the everest
Speaker 7yeah it has actually um yeah we're just sort of going about our business and um no he seems like he's in good order he arrived yesterday afternoon and at ramwick and he settled in really well and i can't fault him and hopefully um hopefully this rain keeps coming is he
Speaker 2the forgotten horse oh look he's
Speaker 7probably he probably is on this wet ground if it does come um i think that'll probably sort of spike a bit more interest um you know he's obviously his first up run was over the thousand in the moya and what sort of funny old race that and the other day the track we probably expected it to be a bit softer and the rain never came so we know he loves loves soft ground and he'll hopefully get that saturday and first time with the blinkers on this week so um yeah we'll see how
Speaker 2we go that is exciting um and we're having a chat to a few of the other trainers that join me throughout the week on givy up and they're all very excited about the track and they're all very excited about the it's a wonderful recipe for a horse that has been around as long as geeky cats and you haven't put the blinkers on him but um history tells you when you do put the blinkers on a horse like this that hasn't needed it that they can find a length or so um do you think that would be the case
Speaker 7yeah look we're sort of obviously um we're hoping you know or are you
Speaker 2confident that will be the case or you're more hopeful more
Speaker 7well it's hard to say with him because he's been such a genuine yeah all the way through but um i did i did have him on him a couple of years ago and sort of had a bit of a plan that i may have potentially was going to put him on in an everest a couple of years ago and and i elected not to at the time he's still a little bit horses you know he's a horse that can get a bit hot and a bit over the top so this time around i sort of always had in the back of my mind that sort of stirred up this preparation if we were to get to an everest you know in a race that looks to be a lot of speed um you know we can afford to put these blinkers on and give them a try and um he's been very good and he works being great can't fault the horse um he's going to need a little bit of luck from the white alley and you know you'd anticipate he'll be off the speed but you know you could maybe think that the track the inside might be um not where you want to be so it might work out in his favor but um he's going great very happy with him he's obviously coming in off two sort of inconclusive runs you would have loved to seen him savage the line his last run and and sort of come here you know knowing that he's sort of ready to go but i can't fault him he's great order he looks terrific he's tightened up and he ticks all the boxes from my end
Speaker 2and the gate i guess we won't know if it's a good gate until after the race or how this track's playing anyways we get closer to the to the everest is that how you see it
Speaker 7yeah i would say so yeah it all depends how much rain we get i think and probably be more so what sort of rain they get race day and um yeah how the pattern of the day so we can tend to play out i know we we were sort of drew a good gate in a tj a few years ago and um we were sort of stuck on the inside we come out presented i wish i wouldn't have a nice free-flying run from out wider having drawn the outside alley so um you know third up we know he's He's in great order. He's definitely tightened up. He's had a really good week He's travelled up well. He's had a trial in between his last run and Saturday. And, yep, I'm sure he'll run very well. He's never let me down before, so I'm sure he'll put his best foot forward.
Speaker 2And I reckon the best push that the putters can get is that yourself and Jonathan Munns and Rocket Douglas have decided to try and get a slot there for the Everest. So I think that says it all with the old boy.
Speaker 7He's a beauty. Three Everest, it's been a great ride with him, and he's got a great record at the. 1,200 at Randwick. So, you know, he did run really well behind Jolly Star in the autumn in the TJ. So I'm sure he'll run very well, but obviously we've got a fair amount to climb with Kajing Rising.
Speaker 2Yeah, but he just loves his day, doesn't he? As you pointed out, it must be the atmosphere or something. It just gets the. we see the best of him.
Speaker 7Funny enough, I think he's probably got the best record in the race. A hundred percent. To be fair, cheekily.
Speaker 2He just loves Sweet Caroline. That's his go.
Speaker 7That might be the go. I might have to play it more often before he runs.
Speaker 2Are you sleeping with him this week? Yes. Yeah, I'll be
Speaker 7sleeping with him this week. Don't worry. I'll be able to tell you everything about him come Saturday. But no, no, he's in very good order. He's obviously a seasoned campaigner. He's travelled up terrific and I'm very pleased with how he takes shape this Saturday.
Speaker 2What about Leopard Shark in the ethereal stakes there at Caulfield on Saturday in race two?
Speaker 7She's an interesting one. I brought her up to Sydney a fortnight ago and ran her in the dulcifier. It wasn't a bad run. I thought that she might have been suspect of running the mile, but my jockey, Rachel King, has said to give her a try out over 2,000 metres, so I'm going to trust that. And look, she's actually a really tough horse and I think she's had a really good week. She worked really well Tuesday morning on the course properly. She needs to come up from what she's done. But if she does run out 2,000 metres, she'll be right in the finish. I'd say she could probably take up a nice enough spot from the middle draw and she'll give herself every chance. But it'll be a wait and see to see whether she can run out 2,000 at the moment.
Speaker 2All right then, mate. So that's what you see here at the trip, Leopard Shark. If I gave you $100 this week, what would you do with it, Clayton?
Speaker 7I would be having it on giga kick because I just hope that the rain comes and can hopefully see little white. White blinkers coming down the middle of the track and getting over the car ink. So I'll start out with giga.
Speaker 2Race seven, number three, giga kick in the Everest. The play there for Clayton Douglas. Go and get them, mate. We appreciate your time as always. Thank you very much. There's Clayton Douglas there in his best mate giga kick. I reckon he'll run a mighty race on Saturday once again in the Everest. We'll take a break. J.D. Hayes to join us next. We'll be right back. We'll be right back. It is 8.51. Father and son about to join us. We'll have J.D. Hayes in after nine o'clock. He's a legendary father. The Hall of Famer David Hayes will be joining us here on Giddy Up. But J.D. joins us here on this Thursday morning. G'day, J.D. Morning. Thank you for having me. Was it difficult not to run Mr. Brightside in a King Charles with the rain around Sydney this week?
Speaker 8Yeah, it was a decision that we contemplated heavily. But we felt out of his last run that we would just love to see him trial and make sure that he's back on song, which we really do believe he is. And we thought it would be better for him to place him against the weakest competition that we can, not the hardest competition that we can find. So that was the reason why we elected to, give him a little jump out tomorrow at Flemington, head towards the Crystal Mile.
Speaker 2Fringilla goes around and raced to a call field. Very impressive the other day at Geelong. Obviously, this is harder, but that was some effort. Can she win stepping up to the 2000?
Speaker 8We think so. She's bred to get the trip and she's absolutely best out of that run and it rated highly. So it ticks a lot of boxes for us and I think she'll be awfully competitive.
Speaker 2How's Photograph going? She goes around the Olingi Stakes.
Speaker 8Yeah, she needs wet tracks. If it's not going to be soft or heavy, she won't go around, but she is low-level flying. We just need to get the conditions to suit with her. So hopefully we get it next week.
Speaker 2All right, then. And then we go to War Machine. He looked like he was flying and then he had an interrupted start to his campaign. How's he going now?
Speaker 8Yeah, he hasn't had much luck starting from when he was favourite in the Ori Star and burst through the barriers. And then he resumed really nicely over at Caulfield in the Heath Stakes there. And then we ran into Rupert Clarke from a wide barrier, which was an idea he was just too keen. And then since Rupert Clarke, we just have been plagued with wide barriers and wet tracks that she doesn't like. But we finally, patience is a virtue, seem to have found the right race for him, barrier four. And the way that he trialled, we think we've got the War Machine of old back and really looking forward to seeing him on the weekend.
Speaker 2Well, the real War Machine would win this, wouldn't he?
Speaker 8You'd think so. He is a Stradbroke winner and his quality is outstanding when he's on stage. Here to shock? Here to shock. The old boy, he's still got a race hit him for sure. We've incorporated a bit of jumping into his daily routine that's really fired him up, which is good. So he'll run a good race too.
Speaker 2And that's at the Harry White Stakes with War Machine and here to shock. And then we go to the Henley Holmes Sprint over the Thousand. Oak Hill has been trialling enormously. Can he win first up with D-Lane aboard?
Speaker 8He looks like he's coming. He's coming back better for his Queensland time in Queensland. So really looking forward to it. And as you'd expect in the Thousand Metres, there's a lot of speed on. But this race, it does look like a heap of speed on. So it could set up nicely for him.
Speaker 2And a Thousand Metres first up, this would nearly be one of his better set-ups, wouldn't it? With a heap of speed on paper.
Speaker 8Yes, yes, hopefully. So hopefully that works out as it does on paper, as we know it can often not quite work that way.
Speaker 2Regal Ambition is now the equaliser. Regal Ambition is now the equal favourite with Bet365 with Saintly Dance and the Group 1000 Guineas. She's done nothing wrong this time around, JD. Are you happy with her?
Speaker 8Yeah, no, she hasn't missed a beat. We think she's pretty special. So hopefully she's able to show that on the weekend. She just hasn't got terrific gate speed, so not too unhappy about the barrier. Hopefully we end up in a three-wide line with a bit of front cover and she can chime in and really round off a strong mile.
Speaker 2How special is she?
Speaker 8I'll tell you after the weekend.
Speaker 2Yeah. But you've got a good feeling that she is special. Is that what you're trying to tell us?
Speaker 8Yeah, I've got a good feeling that she's of serious quality, Gareth. Look, she's only had a handful of starts and she'll be better in the autumn, but the way that she's doing things gets you out of bed in the mornings pretty easily.
Speaker 2All right, then. And then Marfiano's at a big price first up after a Queensland campaign, and that is in the Blue Sapphire Stakes, which is a good race, as it always is for those three-year-olds.
Speaker 8Very, very strong. We've tried it up nicely, but it'll be improved for the run.
Speaker 2All right, then. Round week race 10, Test of Love. First up, your thoughts there, or second up now?
Speaker 8Yeah, I know Dad's gone on right now and said he'll shit himself if it's a heavy, but if it is a heavy, Test of Love will love it. And looking forward to seeing if it is going to keep raining here in Sydney.
Speaker 2Okay. So if it is a rain-affected track and it does get to the heavy range, it looks like with the rain around Friday and Saturday, it's going to be a tight track anyway, would that suit Test of Love? And you get Zach Pertin aboard as well.
Speaker 8Look, it will feel a little bit different to day two of the ball when he won on the heavy 10, gracing the turf of Royal Randwick, but look, he definitely gets through the conditions.
Speaker 2Don't worry about a heavy track for Carling Rising?
Speaker 8Nah, not too worried. Not too worried.
Speaker 2Are you going to Morfaville on Saturday with your two horses, or are you just waiting to see? We'll see a little bit later on whether you'll go to Adelaide or not.
Speaker 8Still contemplating Tsukushima, but definitely going with the cash. I think he'll bounce back. Beautiful. He's gone to Adelaide and won before, and I think he'll be no different this time.
Speaker 2And if I gave you $100, what would you do with it this weekend?
Speaker 8I'd put $100 on Fringilla into Regal Ambition.
Speaker 2Race two, number eight, into race seven, number nine. So the two three-year-old fillies to shine for Lindsay Park on Caulfield Cup Day. You go and get them, JD, and enjoy the ride there with Carling Rising once again with your family there in the Everest, mate. We wish you the best of luck.
Speaker 8Thank you. Don't talk about the weather too much with Dad, please.
Speaker 2No, he's had enough. Anyway, is it Cranbourne?
Speaker 8Yes, I do feel Renarsson. He's very short-priced, but he's a pretty good horse. He won impressively and I think he'll do it again.
Speaker 2Beautiful. Thanks for that, JD. There's JD Hayes. This is Giddyup. All thanks to Bet365. Good morning, Gareth. Any chance Johnny Sadler on before he retires next month? A legend of our sport. Have a great day. Yeah, we're going to try and get Johnny Sadler for Beyond the Barriers. He retired during the week. He'll go out, I think, in November. He's one of my favourite people in racing, Johnny Sadler. He's a great character, wonderful horseman, wonderful trainer. He'll have a few stories to tell us as well. So we'll get him on in the next few weeks. It's 8.58. We'll be right back.
Speaker 1join the conversation text us on 0 4 9 7 3 6 7 3 6 live across australia this is giddy up with gareth hall welcome back
Speaker 2to giddy up this is giddy up stable mail on this thursday morning as we get set for one of the biggest days on the australian racing calendar it's everest day in caulfield cup day for us racing fans it really doesn't get any better david hayes is about to join us we'll catch up with the kira marstable and then we'll have a chat to bob peters who'll be trying to win his first caulfield cup congressman went so close for him in 1988 he thought he wanted bob back then three race callers were calling at that meeting they all called his horse winning but he lost that photo and ever since then he's been trying to win a caulfield cup bob peters and he gets his chance with cosmic crusader who is the favorite we've bet three six five after bolting home in a turnbull stakes a few weeks back so we'll have a chat to the champion owner breeder from wa also in the next 30 minutes but it's always great to catch up with the hall of fame of david hayes and i've said this before but racing is lucky to have ambassadors like zach purton and david hayes um and i think it's a blessing that they have got the best horse in the world because they have been brilliant with their time with the media promoting this great game when they've got the opportunity to take this game to new heights um with them training the world's best horse in kane rising and he has dominated the conversation this week not just in this country but right around the globe um as he heads to the everest for the second time and uh david's with us now good morning david thanks for your time mate yeah good morning gareth um how are you feeling
Speaker 9on this thursday morning um look he did his final piece of work this morning and he had a contingency from hong kong watching him yes um there were probably 30 people and when he worked well he was able to work well and he worked past the crowd and they clapped it was very nice um but the ground was probably yielding and he moved beautifully on it and wanted to go faster and two minutes after the piece of work you wouldn't know he'd work so no we can't have him better and we're just sort of keeping one eye on the weather if the tracks like it was this morning i'm not at all concerned yeah um and probably the one thing we are worrying about we can't do anything about it but we're is the weather uh jack is less confident on on uh slow to heavy than i am but i i'm okay slow and heavy i'd have a concern so he goes
Speaker 2106 there on a good track at chartin to win first up before coming to australia um i know there's concerns over a heavy track but there is the other side of this he could love a heavy track
Speaker 9david yeah look um i brought him off a heavy track yeah and that was my concern about buying him was the forms on wet ground and and look the chief executives he ran 18 so it got put up yielding but the other horses the mere mortals on the day ran 110 which is as you know pretty slow in hong kong yeah so i would say that was a slow track but zach who rides him and gets a feel um just thinks um he's better on rock hard and you probably would when you're running five records in five runs uh so we know i think he's pretty good on everything do
Speaker 2you know what david you taught us this last year we love zach and he's great with us here on giddy up and i love how he goes all about it but you know what i'm not i'm not being fooled by him like i was last year and you told us that like he said i don't know about the gate i'm worried about the track no it's a good gate for tempted gate one i think it's a better gate than if she drew outside like um there's been nothing positive so i reckon that he knows that he's on the best horse and he it doesn't really matter but you're right he's just trying to take the pressure off him just a little bit
Speaker 9he gives himself a bit of
Speaker 2wriggle
Speaker 9but the good thing the good thing about zach is he rises to the occasion and uh the occasion doesn't get to him and uh once i put zach on i just uh try to relax because he gets the job done he's done it 21 times in a row and probably one time an international race they've got it wrong and he's still one yeah um but zach of course he blamed others but uh i'd give him 29 out of 10s and probably a 7 out of 10 in the international which he won so we we can't be so he gets it right and i wouldn't want anyone else on the horse
Speaker 2and you've done an amazing job with him just to keep him doing what he's doing like i know he's got the ability but you're nearly breaking track records every time he steps out like he seems to be getting better david under your guidance extraordinary really looking at
Speaker 9him today i've never seen him better and he's just thrived at canterbury um the people out there quarantined say they've never seen a horse settle in as well and i think that's the case he's waits where we want him uh you know i know it's a long time in racing 20 48 hours but um he's absolutely perfect you've done
Speaker 2it all in this game are you enjoying like i know that it probably gets easier as you get older and you've had the experience with many a champion throughout your time um but it seems to me you're embracing this um with coming rising
Speaker 9i just know forever how long i train i won't get another one like this one um he he's in the stratosphere where my other champions have been exceptional horses but k ying like winks and black aviar have been absolutely at the top of their games for the best well my horse for three years and they were nearly four so if we can keep doing it for another year he's surely an all-time great
Speaker 2yeah well there's no doubt about that he's already an all-time great do you sometimes have a quiet moment with him and you look at him and um um obviously you've got a relationship with him but do you like why are you different to the others um have you been able to work that out
Speaker 9look i i just pinched myself with him and my staff do and the main thing we try to do is keep it as normal and consistent as possible with this horse and not tumble into spoiling him or using me as an exhibition horse we're very strict on his routine and uh and that keeps us not getting overawed by
Speaker 2this champion yeah but he must know he's different in a way no no other horse has six people with him when they travel or people clapping after a piece of track
Speaker 9work yeah yeah look look i've never seen it in my lifetime um and you probably pete moody or or chris waller could tell you what it was like in the hype of their horses but uh this fella's got that sort of hype you know he he gets more to the to have a trial and it gets so scrutinized and it's only a trial it's uh you know i said to zach before the trial it's a bit overwhelming to see how many people go to watch him especially with when i know that we're not racing
Speaker 2yeah it's it's pretty cool but i'm and um i think we're just lucky to have a champion like like him at the moment especially he being based in hong kong and he gets to come to this country like the everest has always been a great race but this has well and truly put the everest on on the map worldwide now with kane rising coming gareth one thing i want to say is that the everest has always been a great race but this has well and truly put the everest on on the map worldwide now with kane rising coming gareth one thing i want to say is
Speaker 9that the everest has always been i think i'd like to say is there's a comment like with winks and with black caviar that they beat nothing but they actually beat these horses beat the best horses around and make them look moderate they're not moderate but they make them look moderate and they say he beats up the same horses in hong kong but they forget he's come down to australia last year and beat the best from australia probably not at his best so um if he's beating nothing australia's got nothing yeah it's a crazy statement it's just a stupid statement and and i just get sick of reading it on twitter
Speaker 2yeah i can't like but even you just have to have a look at the times like he's beating track records like that that that says it all to me um yeah and he's beating the
Speaker 9clock what splinter hasn't erased or dodged yeah in his three year at the top uh he takes on everyone um so uh i don't think he's beating nothing
Speaker 2no um barrier 11 um you see him just cruising across and then trying to dominate and own that race like he did last
Speaker 9year yeah well he he cruises across at chartin with 300 meters yeah or 250 and this time he's got 650 or 700 and most of the most of the field are off midfield horses so i can see him getting across very easily i think it's a good barrier yeah um and then what do you do with him saturday morning does he have a trot around or yeah he he does a very in routine he goes out at the same time as every day but he'll just do a a modified bit of slow work just so he's mentally that's all about having you mentally right on the day nice and calm not too fresh
Speaker 2and when do you get to relax like troy and calvin um join me for the wednesday agenda troy causton's and calvin mcavoy and calvin was explaining that he couldn't sleep last year with half yours until the next week and then he was like oh my god i'm not gonna sleep Saturday morning when he checked on him and his temperature went up. He was right and he was right to go. Is that similar for you? Is it Saturday morning once you check him in the morning or is it once you saddle him up?
Speaker 9Well, stage one of race day is the morning, meaning he's eaten up and his temp's fine and he canters and he's ready to go. The step two is that he gets off the float because he's not used to travelling on a float and he hasn't run amok on the float. And stage three is that he relaxes. And when I see him relax walking around, my job's basically done and then it's over to Zachary.
Speaker 2Yeah, well, we wish you the best of luck. Is there any chance that you could find me a hard kick, David, at the Inglis Ready to Run sale?
Speaker 9Well, I'm standing here now and I'm looking at the big poster of him and it was a good buy and he's next to Ruby Lott, who I bought here before. So I'm two for two. So if I can help, I'd love to.
Speaker 2What is the secret of finding a good Ready to Run horse?
Speaker 9I think that they all run 10.5. I could run 10.5 the way they – they all run fast time. But it's the way they go into the gallop. I like to look for a relaxed horse, not a fizzed up one. And if they're running 10.5 in a relaxed manner, which trainers tend to know because they train them, I don't like aggressive horses. So I look for – the moment I see them aggressive, I just put a line through.
Speaker 2All right. Then we'll check out the – the Inglis website and when Lindsay Park buy one, we'll see if we can get in because you couldn't sell hard kicker. You kept him for yourself basically last time.
Speaker 9Yeah. So what happened was I kept him to go to Hong Kong and I was home around the fires and he might have started them. He galloped up the track and he was flying and the boys talked me into leaving him in Australia and have a crack at the Blue Diamond and he won the lead up. And he slightly wrenched his joint so we've kept him in Australia. Yeah. But I'd say he'll finish his career in Hong Kong. Yeah. But he'll come back in the autumn for sure. We've given him a good break. He was just a bit immature and wasn't ready for the Dane Hill and those races. So we've given him every chance to be a good horse and a nice break. Hong Kong – in Hong Kong, it's more about four- and five-year-olds, not two- and three-year-olds.
Speaker 2And I guess you'll just have to wait for Kaling Rising to retire before you take another spot. Britta to Hong Kong. Be unfair on hard kick to line up against him. No, hard kick's unfortunately in a different suburb. Yes, yes. J.D. was lucky. He didn't give too much away. Usually he's bullish with a few, David. But he says he's regal ambition. I go, he said she's quite special. I said, how special? He said, I'll tell you after the race, Gareth. Can you tell us, David?
Speaker 9Well, the boys are getting plenty of winners, but they're searching for a new top. Top liner. And they haven't been obvious this spring, but all the boys individually told me, I think this is a good one, Dad. And she certainly looked good. She came from last, circled them, and went against the trend and won beautifully. She's got an average barrier again, but there's something she's done that makes the boys really love her. And so far, they've been absolutely correct.
Speaker 2So that's regal ambition, of course, in the Thousand Guineas. You must be proud of the boys before we let you go. Because they've done a mighty job, David, really after the bushfires at the start of the year. It seems like that's a long time ago now, but they've done a mighty job.
Speaker 9Yeah, it's only eight months ago that we were absolutely decimated. And it did slow us up where they had to change all their routines and tracks were shut down and spelling facilities shut and stables blown over. So, yeah, I would say they'll get much, the autumn and next spring they'll be back to normal, I think. If I gave you $100 this weekend, David, what would you do with it? I think I'd back the boys' horse in the Guineas. Yes. And then just go all up the champion.
Speaker 2Race seven, number nine, regal ambition into race seven, number one, carrying, rising in Sydney. Of course, regal ambition there at Caulfield. As I said before, David, you've been a champion, mate, with the promotion that you've done for this great race. You don't say no. You're not going to say no to an interview. We appreciate it. I've got the K-Rising jacket on that I've got off staff. It's a bit tight. I think it's jockey size, extra large, but I love it. I like the colours too.
Speaker 9We can change it. It was amazing with all the Chinese owners there today. A rainbow came over Canterbury just as it's working. And they're the same colours as K-Rising, of course. So we all got very excited.
Speaker 2Yes, yes. It's just meant to be. It's meant to be. Well, you enjoy yourself on Saturday as well as you can anyway. I know there's a lot of pressure on you, but it's going to be some race. It always is. And we're looking forward to seeing what your champ can do again. Okay. Thank you, Gareth. There we go. Hopefully talking to you after. Yeah, we will be. Make sure, yeah, Monday morning we'll probably.
Speaker 9And I'll get you a bigger jacket. Yeah, that'd be appreciated. You look smaller on TV.
Speaker 2Thanks, mate. There's David Hayes. It's 15 minutes past nine. We're going to take a break. And Jack Turnbull will be joining us here, the assistant. The assistant trainer to Kieran Maher. Well, Kieran Maher throughout his illustrious career has had good runs before. He's been in and out of form, but most of the time he's in form. But I don't think I've seen, his horses go better than how they're going right now. And a man that plays a large part in all of that is his trainer, assistant trainer there here in Melbourne in Jack Turnbull. And he joins us now. Hello to you, Jack. Morning. Thanks for having me. I think the stable's never been better. And that is saying something when you have a look back at his career,
Speaker 10Kieran Maher. Yeah, we are having a really good run, which is fantastic. I'm not sure how it ranks across his career, but yeah, we felt like we've had a pretty good go of it through winter. And, you know, we made a point of that to finish off the season really well. And naturally with that and the numbers we have, you know, that generally flows, but to have horses healthy, placed correctly, get the right luck, et cetera, is another thing. And thankfully it's fallen our way.
Speaker 2I think when you can get your tactics right and you can do the job that you've been able to do with Land Legend, for instance, I think that says it all in a way. And he can, yeah, I think, that's what you think. Well, I think we're going okay.
Speaker 10Yeah. Well, he was a magic result for Bond and Judy. And that particular race, it was obviously very small that the race itself has thrown up some results in the past with the globe being one I can think of. And we wanted to roll. We drew low. And the idea was to run top three to get qualified for a Melbourne Cup. He'd been out of the Knicks for a while in black type races. And thankfully he pulled out a really good performance. And credit to Brownie. He pulled off a masterful ride.
Speaker 2And they're going to pay up now for the Cox Plate. I think Kieran indicated that to us on Monday and Ethan Brown as well. But Trent Mason has just confirmed that we'll see Land Legend and Light Infantryman both in a Cox Plate. So it's going to be a truly run Cox Plate this year.
Speaker 10It'll be genuine speed. That's for sure. But both horses are in good order. And I, I saw Land Legend yesterday in Ballarat. He's come through it fine. Infantryman, you would have seen Gallop Tuesday. He's on one. So it's a good time of year to have horses fitting well and the right races are shaping up for them.
Speaker 2I know he went down in a fast run Queen Elizabeth, but I keep going back to his Australian Cup victory light infantryman when he was able to follow a hot speed and follow pride of Jenny that day. If Land Legend can lead and take him into the race and he's got something to chase, I reckon, he could be the knockout chance in a Cox Plate. I think it's a big plus for him that Land Legend's going there.
Speaker 10He'll be only benefited for Land going into the race. There's no denying it. So he is one that Kieran and the team have always gloated that the faster the race pace and the harder it's run, the better he goes. And there's not many horses that can get past pride of Jenny at 2000 meters. And he's one of them. So I'm sure if Land Legend can get past that, if Land Legend was in the same mood Cox Plate day, he would thrive off it.
Speaker 2Let's have a look at your runners at Caulfield first of all, Vallis and Skua. You gave us a good push for Skua there at Flemington. I thought he was mighty despite finishing sixth. Geez, he's at a big price. Once again, Vallis is the favorite with Bet365 at 330. Should there be that much between these two three year olds?
Speaker 10They shouldn't. Villis is the pick. He's definitely profiling better on exposed form. But if you keep an eye on Skua, and actually watch his individual runs, I still think he's going as good. And he's a horse that we're very confident will stay on. So we're here Saturday and then naturally onwards to a Derby where you can still get a reasonable price. So he's definitely on the up.
Speaker 2What about your filly there in the ethereal stakes? Levarte 1400 to 2000 here.
Speaker 10Yeah, which will say she's bred to get a mile and a half plus. We're trying to get her to an Oaks ideally, but, It's a bit of a jump, but she's not going to lack fitness she's been in a little while she's had a good grounding the gate's not nice uh so i'm not sure where we get there in running but um she's a philly we have full confidence that we'll stay on and she's got the class
Speaker 2um just back to that three-year-old race that where do you think those two horses will get to in the run from those gates could
Speaker 10scua lead he could yeah he's more of a tight battle he forward and flowing yeah um the lease is a little bit more dynamic he's got to turn a foot that horse so yeah we'll speak to the lads but i'd say zara rides him as he breaks on your small field so you're working it out as they um sort themselves out what about signature
Speaker 2scent she's been in good form this prep she goes around the leading stakes
Speaker 10she does yeah strong wide but we're out of the um out of the chute sort of set up there so it's not a concern but she likes the track she didn't fall she's got a nice gap between she's at a trial at ballarat with ice lady uh in preparation for this and um this is her grand final if she was to win it sets her up at the time of year to potentially go and breed but um we're happy with how she's training race
Speaker 2number four is the gothic stakes does calamari ring stay in melbourne
Speaker 10she went north to contest okay yeah all
Speaker 2right then so she doesn't go around there so the thorn caster milson's point yep
Speaker 10the thorn caster arrived this morning so we've drawn a reasonable alley there which is pleasing um i thought he's last was was just okay he was very good at wild but um we believe he's of the caliber of his class and um sydney form generally proves to be superior especially around the provincial areas so if he brings out his best he um he should figure
Speaker 2the thousand guineas over the 1600 i remember talking to karen i don't know if i talked to you about saintly dancer um i didn't think that you guys thought that she was a thousand guineas horse and then she did what she did there at flemington and now she's favorite for the thousand guineas
Speaker 10yeah it's funny how it works um we're we're always conscious of her condition actually she's not a she's not a big horse she only weighs 440 which is not big um and we just didn't want to go one too many uh so we treated the edward as a grand final in a way and uh look she proved us wrong which is which is a great part of it so she was she was very good on the day she's thriving she's maintained that that base weight and uh drawn a very good gait in a small field so she deserves a chance
Speaker 2karen was weighing up whether he goes to the 1200 1400 or the 1600 on saturday he's gone to the 1600 with over the bridge and the thousand guineas how does she win from that gate a very good
Speaker 10question um i'm gonna have to leave that up to mark but in terms of speed like there's ice lady will poke forward from a wide draw saintly dancers there platinum pearl probably takes a pull in his second half so yeah it's just going she steps she's versatile and she's she's pretty streetwise like she can go forward she can travel behind and um you can use her that way but uh thankfully we've got a bit of confidence with her she's a very classy horse so um yeah mark's gonna have to be very good
Speaker 2why is ice lady 12 and saintly dancer four dollars jack can you explain that for us
Speaker 10i cannot but um i'm hopeful yeah they get it wrong because ice lady in terms of all sort of facts and figures you know she's capable of of what could be a better run performance than saintly dancer and the beauty of young horses is you take them to the races each start and they're improving and changing and um i do like the build-up ice lady said she's had a month between little trials she's up to a mile and um brownie gets along with her very well so she's there this saturday to to run a peak and really um take the race by storm and
Speaker 2platinum pearl comes through the regal ambition pretty baby form lines can she improve enough to beat those two um up to 1600
Speaker 10she could and she can i just don't like the gate we're going to be back so if it's dominated from the front and if caulfield is playing caulfield like then it would be tricky and if anyone watched her run last start she arguably could have won or got a lot closer she got held up at the top of the straight so um she's there to run as good as she can she's got the class she'll be onwards to an oaks and that's that's it she's definitely a staying type of philly and um she'll just need the most amount of luck i would suspect uh come saturday
Speaker 2who's the best chance out of those four phillies best
Speaker 10chance i'm going to go with ice lady uh i do like her lead up run i've got a bit of belief that she will excel and be better um faintly dance is the interesting one i mean she she pulled out a huge performance on a wet track and we're not going to get that so that's something to consider but um we we've got a really good run and runners we've got four of them and we can definitely win but i'll lean slightly towards
Speaker 2ice lady and with the gate speed of both those phillies ice lady saintly dancer saintly dancers drawn inside of ice lady is isolated got enough gate speed to get in front of her if ethan wants
Speaker 10to yeah she does yeah she's not slow um i mean she matched motors with signature scent 10 days ago and she's a very fast horse signature scent so um i would suspect if she was right and she stepped clean you know we could either push or pull and be where we want but she would be quick enough
Speaker 2fred's was so impressive leading all the way there on manicato stakes day barracks obviously johnny o'neill and those punt road syndicate colors that are on fire at the moment um as a big opinion of this galloper nash gave him a peach at a midweek meeting in sydney the other day first up can they win a blue sapphire stakes on saturday they definitely
Speaker 10can yeah barracks is a talented horse he's very keen at times and he's he's taken plenty of work from the team up there but uh he comes down with a lot of confidence behind him he's arrived safely this morning drawn a good gate craig on so there's a big um few ticks there and threads run a class record maybe off the top of my head last start at caulfield in a handicap so they've drawn similarly they'll be landing in in similar positions and they deserve their
Speaker 2space now we go to the caulfield cup the running of the caulfield cup for the hundred and twenty-first time in the hundred and fiftieth time saint george we'll start off with him he's nearly equal second favorite with sarah now we've bet 365 he's 850 saran eight dollars um i will ask you about both these horses both in the aussie care colors can you split
Speaker 10the two i lean towards the run slightly i still have confidence in him i'll be not in the whole spring and i'm not going to let one disappointing run sort of rule him out so uh saint george is in a really good place i mean he's just behind him and that's naturalism and run a credible race in the turnbull with conditions not to suit so um they're going to be in very similar spots um pretty much the same weight so it's hard to split but i will i will sort of lean towards the run
Speaker 2and we added this chat to graham beg with um he's me going to the the caulfield cup as well who finished down the track in that turnbull stakes um of course he's got she's a hustler but you have a look at saint george and saran in the form book and they've got two duck eggs next to their name like just to forgive run they just didn't handle the ground or were there different issues to explain why they were beaten that far well
Speaker 10with the run he was a little bit closer so he was riding that tempo wait for age first time heavy track and and he was underwhelming and he just couldn't absorb that pace so he's a young horse that we we do need to remember and um given the class the track and how it was run he just didn't come up but we put a tongue tie on just to help relax travel better he goes up in trip he gets back on a firm track he gets back to handicap conditions so i think he'll thrive um and as i said i don't think you know one false run is going to rule him out so it takes a bit of um trust but uh you know he's a promising horse all right then
Speaker 2and then we move on to um you got several runners in this year's caulfield cup we'll go to royal supremacy now he's won a couple of nice races in recent times he won the qe 22 there in the queensland at the end of the carnival and then he won nicely last up but he was able to get away with whatever he wanted to in front when he won those two races um is he good enough to win a caulfield cup with more tempo in a race he is
Speaker 10yeah he's a different horse than last uh preparation he was very keen last time and and since queensland and traveling and just growing up he's really softened so he has um pinched a few races from the front having slow sectionals where people haven't contested him or put pressure on but um he can only do what he can and i think with the way the race is shaping up saturday there's not a lot of natural pace he will be forward he can flow and it could be a similar run event to what it was when duke assessor won the race so um he's got a low weight he's going to be where you want to be naturally in the call for cup and he ran fifth in the last year so he's had that season and
Speaker 2middle earth and king's valley
Speaker 10middle earth is better he's warming uh he gets winkers on he's drawn 11 but i think he comes in one or two spots so i'm sure he'll run a credible race there's no reason why he can't um but naturally he's going to be at his best in a two mile event being the melbourne cup
Speaker 2then we go to sydney we'll start off with calamari ring so she does go to sydney there and betty mellum rides the reason why you're going to sydney quality
Speaker 10of the field i think she's better off up there and the way the weather she thrives in wet ground so um yeah we've got a strong hand up there naturally but i think at the value that she represents she's quite a good bet because she's going very well and the 14 is a huge plus in the
Speaker 2man's race vivier um she gets j mac over the 1600 meters this looks a lovely race for her
Speaker 10it does yeah slightly backing class you would say um which is which is sort of where we're at but we've drawn a good barrier so hopefully we can posse up a touch closer and um i see she's been pretty well found in the market i think she's second favorite so hopefully she gets it done
Speaker 2for peterbucks a lot of us giddy up punters and the mickey gannon followers were devastated that juja kabo who won a metroff in the fashion that he did can't get a start on a caulfield cup but he goes around the saint ledger and piggyback as well your thoughts there
Speaker 10it's a very nice option for juja it's disappointing um we didn't get a start but um good prize now on offer uh you know the trip's fine he's going to get his toe in which he loves so hopefully we can um you know be winning that and then we can bring him down to victoria after but uh he's definitely the one to be in that race we would think
Speaker 2piggyback will love
Speaker 10the conditions she should she was disappointing last start um adam sent her down to victoria and we thought she had it all her way in terms of you know where she was going to lob and travel and and she just wanted to get in and and she just didn't want to partake so she pulled up fine we sent her back and um she needs to get back to her best so that will be seen but um the team are happy so hopefully she can get back to
Speaker 2form are you happy with barrier one with tempted in the everest i know she had that draw last
Speaker 10year uh i i guess we are um race seven on the day with the weather that's coming or i just had a chat with tom charlton he said the rain's just stopped and everyone knows about 60 million a week so my query would be that time of the day you know where do you want to be is that inferior ground you need to get off it um you know that's where you'd think jimmy's going to be better placed but um she's she's a freak you know she's going supremely well she's only second favorite to the best sprinter in the world and um she gets through soft ground so there's
Speaker 2plenty to like what about
Speaker 10jimmy jimmy's good jimmy's had a carbon copy lead up to this race as he did to um winning his last start so the teams are very happy blinkers stay on i think we're better off being out there because if he does step a bit slow which he can um you know we can dictate and he generally quickens better around horses than
Speaker 2inside and can pride of jenny i know she's in single figures but can she cause the upset in the king charles and beat autumn glow and char wolf
Speaker 10well she can i mean she's she's a wonder herself um everyone can see what what pressure can do to good horses we saw last week she's an alibi she travels um fine and she performs as good as she was first up the little knock would be the ground um she's a she's a horse that definitely prefers it sort of to be faster um for mine anyway so that that would be interesting but um if she shows up on the day and she's in a mood then she'll take some catching as you know but it's going to be a crack hot field it's great for racing on such a big day and um be hopefully a good day to close off um both randwick and uh
Speaker 2we're going to have a little bit of a break and then we'll see what we can do for the rest of the
Speaker 10week but we'll see what we can do for the rest of the week thank you for joining us and we'll see you next time thanks for watching and we'll see you next time if i gave you a hundred dollars what would you do with it this weekend jack hundred dollars i think i'll definitely have uh
Speaker 250 on calamari in sydney and in melbourne as i said i'll stick with um ice lady in thousand guineas so that's race two number one calamari ring and 50 on the ice lady race
Speaker 10seven number five at caulfield in the thousand guineas any winners at cranburn tomorrow night uh cranburn cranburn front page editions a nice feeling she's going uh and crocodile he got beaten by a decent one last start up to a mile he's very fit so they're probably our two best at cranburn
Speaker 2black aces who i think i am and fully justified um your thoughts there should we back any of those at warner bull
Speaker 10who i think i am is a is a good chance for sure she um she was better first start in victoria she's come down from new south just trying to make um a maiden her maiden but um of the the three we take down i'd be having something on her
Speaker 2all right mate we appreciate your time jack you're great with your time as always good luck this saturday thank you
Speaker 10anytime there's jack
Speaker 2turnbull there gator's game plan not far away it's 9 36 we'll catch up with bob peters maybe after we finish with gator here on this thursday morning it's great to have your company here on this um thursday morning so we'll get david gately ready to go for gator's game plan so that means get your questions in on 0 4 9 7 3 6 7 3 6 on the garrett's horse and hound text line
Speaker 1join the conversation text us on 0 4 9 7 3 6 7 3 6 live across australia this is giddy up with gareth hall on giddy up it's time for gator's game plan with david gately always great to
Speaker 2catch up with david gately for gator's game plan but this is grand final week for us here as we talk to our coach ahead of everest day and caulfield cup day hello to you gator
Speaker 11a lot of pressure grand final week no doubt but um i've got
Speaker 2to apologize to you the coach early doors you know how the coach says you got this assignment i want you to go and find out some information about opposition teams and i want you to get back to me and report and i said no problems and i reported straight back to you and i said calamari ring i'm pretty sure gator she's going to stay in melbourne and then when i asked jack the question i thought he would just say yeah we're going to melbourne gareth and then when he said that he's going to sydney my heart broke i thought oh i'm in trouble with the coach here so i apologize gator that is my fault i take full responsibility and um i probably won't get a chance to coach the team i don't think in the pre-season now anyway yeah
Speaker 11no that's um that's had an impact yeah that was our that was our best in melbourne
Speaker 2um so sorry do you know i thought that was the case um but anyway um but jack turble if it makes you feel any better says that she's the best chance clearly in sydney in fact he made her a play for his 100 staking plan so there you go it is exciting so who is and everyone knows the drill now so with gate every thursday we go through some key categories like the key player who's the best bet of the weekend the toughest race to work out the d-day horse the highlight race we've got two races this weekend and then the night watchman which is the last race um in either sydney or melbourne we try and find you the winner there and then it's up to you the selectors to ask gator any question you want about this weekend's racing as we prepare for battle to try and win on the punt on saturday so um obviously we've had to change plans at the selection table who is the first athlete you're picking now
Speaker 11all righty um i guess we'll go to sydney for our best race 10 number three will be cross tasman um yeah good horse i think you'd have to be to test decorum latest giving that to you horse weight so look he's got to um he's got to carry 60 again but um pretty keen he's the one to beat made him the best in sydney on the big 10 race card there so
Speaker 2that's race 10 number three cross tasman in sydney and then we go to the long division race which is a very tough race to try and sort out is the sydney stakes which is the consolation basically of the everest on saturday and just having a look at the market here with uh bet three six five of course the sydney stakes is race six you had overpass at seven dollars but hates a heavy track charmstone eight dollars mahuna at eight napoleonic at nine skybird at nine graft of burners at 10 beam at 10 pericles at 12 generosity at 16 joker's grin at 17 king secret 19 gangster granny at 19 yellow brick at 21 dollars golden strand at 23 then one arua at 26 dollars good luck here gator
Speaker 11yeah no this is uh this is a tough one um what i know about mahuna is she's really genuine look she's not a star superstar she's really really good horse obviously you know she's a group one winner but she'd be tempted still can't get over that but sure you know slip out look i loved the fight to win the galaxy third up last prep she hits this race third up and she was wide in the premier and still beat a lot of key robbers in this race so i'm happy with her on top but yeah there'll be a few for the quality generosity can certainly improve but i don't think she's going to prove and you know charmstone's good but not great don't know what to do with overpass now napoleonic draws the car park and certainly skybirds in the strongly in the mix as well so yeah tough one how are you trying
Speaker 2to work out how this track will play there in sydney on saturday
Speaker 11coach oh i thought this was this isn't the comedy channel no this is um yeah uh yeah sometimes we try yeah six to eight mils predicted 71 no we learned
Speaker 2something we learned something did you i know you listen to us religiously here and get up but you do you do play on both sides these days because you're such a superstar with all of your media commitments but josh holt paulie sebastiani he did explain something to us here which i didn't know so he says when you're looking at the weather report all right and it says say 10 to 70 mils 75 chance that it's 10 to 70 mils and a 25 or i don't know yeah 25 chance that is the 35 mils. So if this is 10 to 35, you just look at the 10 mils, basically, if you know what I mean, Gator.
Speaker 11Yeah, I know what you mean, and I heard that interview and I'd only missed that window by 40. No, it was good. No, it's good. It is hard work predicting the future. Believe me, I know.
Speaker 2Yes, yes. So we've got a few in the quaddie. Mahuna, Generosity, Charmstone, Overpass, Napoleonic, and Skybird in that Sydney Stakes. Then we go to the D-Day horse,
Speaker 11the veteran. Yeah, so end of sentence, all right. D-Day horse. I didn't want to
Speaker 2give it away at the end of the day. Yeah, no, fair call. You can tell him. I like this horse. He probably thinks he's hardly done
Speaker 11by. Yeah, I thought it was a comma, that's all. So race five, number one, is Private Eye. So look, he's obviously not getting any younger, but none of us are. And look, he was safely held by Skyhawk Gladys, but he had to give that up and come off two kilos, and they ran fast time. I think this is around his mark these days. And he probably gets the rails trail here. So look, happily on top, Private Eye, you probably couldn't load up, and it's probably time for him to win again.
Speaker 2The D-Day horse has been on fire this time around, especially in the last six months or so with you, Gator. So whatever you're saying to these D-Day horses, or if they're listening to us in their boxes here on Giddy Up, it has been working. Maybe we just need, Gator, where the report from, like one of our listeners has just sent to us, 674, the number is, it's just pissed down at Randwick for 30 minutes, and more to come until midday. That's the weather report that you need, Gator. Just get a window,
Speaker 11buy a window, put it in.
Speaker 2The highlight races, we've got two this weekend. Of course, the 150th running of the Caulfield Cup, and then the Tab Everest as well at Group 1 level. Number two, Cosmic Crusader at $5. We'll start with the Caulfield Cup. We've bet $3.65. Then Saran at $8. St. George at $8.50. Wine Dark Sea. The import there for Harry Charlton at $9.00. Or the UK Gallop at half yours, the defending champ at $11.00. And for Jar, for Ray Dawson. I read up on Ray. He's a good story, Ray. He's had a colourful life. But he gets his chance to win a Caulfield Cup for Roger Varian at $12.00. Royal Supremacy at $15.00. The, who were, Jujica Bow at $15.00. The Euphrates at $15.00. So, they're the two emergencies. She's a hustler, $17.00. Stafford at $19.00. I hope he wins at 20-1. Kingswood at $23.00. Point of Law won't get a start at $26.00. And then you go to Middle Earth at $29.00. And Kings Valley at $31.00. And Treasure the Moment at $34.00. And then the Melbourne Cup champ of a few years back, Knights Choice is a big price at $34.00. And you've got the Derby winner at $34.00 as well, Gator. Who do you like in the Caulfield Cup?
Speaker 11Yeah, he is quite a good story, firstly. Ray Dawson. I loved his little TV series. Look, I don't think it was a creek. I think it was more an estuary. But, look, it's not something I want to, it's not a hill I want to die on. You know, happy, look, happy to tip Wyanduck. See, she was, he was in our doubles two months ago. Then they drew Barry at $19.00. So, it's great stuff, really. But, look, his 2026 form is really, really good. He's easy to take a line through, through Dubai Honor, who really had no right to beat at the weights with $61.00 given his rating. His dry track form is super. And taking a line through Opportunity, you know, placed in an e-ball. There's a lot to like about him. I think Enfjars are certainly a danger. Brings in a really similar form on Hedrall's Gate 1. So, what I know by Race 9 is how the track's playing. They were getting off the fence yesterday, weren't they? Later in the day. So, I'm happy with Imports 1-2 this year. The, Australian contingent are all good, but they're all crossing the line together in most of these lead-up races. The asterisk on that is Cosmic Crusader, who won the best lead-up, and he won it well. But, he wanted Sydney's reign probably. He wanted a better draw. And he's unproven at the trip. So, he's hard to load up on. But he'll go in everything. He's force-pick. So, your
Speaker 2numbers in the Caulfield Cup, and as I keep on saying, each and every Wednesday night, if you're with the Oz Racing fan, family, ozracingform.com, you get a comprehensive preview of all of the races in Sydney and Melbourne. And, Gay, you've given your top six or seven rated for the Caulfield Cup. So, Wine Dark Sea, Enver Jar, St. George, Cosmic Crusader, Kingswood, Half Yours, Saran, and then She's a Hustler. Who's the horse that makes the top eight?
Speaker 11Yeah, so there's the top eight there, and I'll probably end up playing some Exotics first fours around those eight, and hope for a bit of luck, and certainly wide coddy, second coddy, skinny as well. I'll play it in the Caulfield Cup this year, so we'll just get a line on the track and how it's playing as we get closer to the race, which will have an impact as well. But always a great race for the Caulfield Cup and Oz Racing. Normally get eight to ten in the big ones, the Caulfield Cup, and certainly the Melbourne Cup, I'll give a top ten as
Speaker 2well. And how do you ride Wine Dark Sea? He has proven that he's got gate speed for a European stay. Do you think Lane tries to go forward and land in a spot? Because I'm paper, there doesn't look to be too much pace in this year's Caulfield Cup. On paper. Look, yeah, I'd
Speaker 11imagine that's plan A, and then there's probably a plan B and C for the top pilots, and D-Lane's certainly one of those. So I'd imagine they'll press on first couple hundred and then assess if they're off pace three wide with a trail perfect the way the track played Wednesday. But if he can get up near the speed and they don't go hard, obviously without doing too much work, he's going to take some beating, I think.
Speaker 2That's a look at the Caulfield Cup, the first of our highlight races. We'll take a break and we'll come back and have a look at the Everest with
Speaker 1David Gately. Text us on 04009 736 736. Live across Australia, this is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 2Plenty of text messages coming through on the Gareth Horse and Hound text line. I got this one from Carl Gator. Listening in from Bali, can't tell you how much I love Gator. He's sarcasm, wit and dry humour is elite. Could listen to him all day. There you go, Gator. Gareth, are you talking about the weather and have a D-Day section with Gator? I think you should watch a movie called Pressure About Weather Forecasting for the Real D-Day. That's a great movie. I've never heard of that. Is there a movie called that? I don't know. I'll have to check that up, Will. Juju Kabu could have won the Caulfield Cup, Gator. Can't believe he never got a start. Doesn't make sense to me.
Speaker 11Yeah, look, it was close. You know, they're really difficult. What do they say? It's often harder to get to the start line than the finish line. But he probably gets a good consolation with the sub-ledger. And a bit of rain in Sydney won't hurt him.
Speaker 2What does Pike do, Gator, from gate number 17? Tom wants to know.
Speaker 11Well, this horse has proven he's not a box seat sort of horse, is he? So I think, especially first try at the trip, you let him find his feet off midfield, three wide with cover, it'd be perfect. Look, he's going to run well, because he runs well every single time he runs. So it's hard to see him running poorly, but it's just there are little things that make his job a little more difficult, that's all.
Speaker 2Keep sending in those texts, 049-736-736. We'll take a break and we'll come back and have a look at the Everest next here on Gator's Game Plan here on Gideon.
Speaker 1Text us on
Speaker 2049-736-736. Now, I've just probably missed time. I ran a little bit today. We've been so busy with Giddy Up Stable Mail and I haven't timed my show as well as I should, and I'm backing up a few breaks here, Gator, so I do apologise for you, but sometimes you've just got to own your mistakes, and I've stuffed up my show. I've stuffed up here, but anyway, I'm going to take another break in about a minute, and then we'll be right. I promise you that. Hey, Gator, night's choice in the Cup. Dry track. Surely he's a big price at $34. Trent from Swan Hill wants to know.
Speaker 11Yeah, he's racing really well, isn't he? You know, obviously a touch unlucky. I thought he had his chance last night, but he ran well. I think Pinhole and Co had been competitive here, so
Speaker 2he's at the top of his game. They say you can't win from Gate 1. You haven't won from Gate 1 at Caulfield Cup since 1941. Liam says. How does Enverger do it?
Speaker 11Well, he'll go forward. He might even lead, so then they can steer to wherever they want with what's-his-face, Estrie, and the saddle should be good.
Speaker 2I'm getting reports, people sending me videos of Randwick, and it's pouring down. A bit of like the scenes like Peter Moody did that day there on that Saturday morning before the TJ Smith, was it? And the meeting went ahead, and it was like a beautiful day. I got sunburned then. But anyway, there's a lot to play out, but it is pouring down at Randwick as we speak. We'll take a break, I promise you, straight after this to kick off our 10 o'clock hour that we'll preview the Everest with David Gately here on Giddy Up. It is great to have your company this Thursday morning.
Speaker 1Text us on 0499 736 736 live across australia this is giddy up with gareth hall back to giddy up you can join our
Speaker 2conversation anytime you want on 0499 736 736 on the garrett's horse and hound text line david gately is with me for gator's game plan and gator i've got a few messages coming through as well from the oz racing family you've been having you've been in good form um really good form we're tipping winners at 15 yesterday you got the quaddie paid around four dollars there for the oz racing family so it's been a good month paid four dollars well fourteen dollars i said didn't
Speaker 11i oh sorry 14 oh well the quaddie i think quaddie paid four thousand yeah yeah which was good feedback um yeah that is good from the punters and yeah it's a bit of play money for a challenging couple of weeks and then of course cup weeks hopefully we've got a bit in the bank yeah well
Speaker 2it's it's good to build a bank before some of the toughest weeks of racing but we love it and the everest well he's a dollar fifty now kane rising so he continues to drift in this group one feature the country's best sprint race it's the world's best sprint race tempted at 480 jimmy star 13 jolly star at 16 ninja at 23 blue door she's 34 into 29 giga kick 40 to 1 angel capital with the blinkers on along with giga kick here at 15 61 spicy martini the strad break champ at 51 headwall at 61 savvy hallie at 71 and then you go to overpass and skybird at 100 to 1 but they're the emergencies cabalas is 126 dollars there for the everest gator your thoughts yeah
Speaker 11look it's um it's obviously it looked a one horse race for about 12 months didn't it yeah um but the last seven eight days um there's clearly some areas of concern uh you know the uh the rain um another fair trial you know at best given his lofty standards you know and it's not as if he paneled them in this race last year kane rising um but he won it and he won it quite well so my conclusion is he's just not the same horse in australia that he is in hong kong he's still outstanding but i don't think he's invincible and unbeatable um for those reasons outlined so um that's but he's the starting point of the race and clearly the most likely winner and as he gets out to a dollar 50 it becomes very tempting pun intended to um to back him so um gee look i can't wait to watch the race as far as a betting angle is a whole different challenge i wonder
Speaker 2what price you'll start i think if it's a heavy track you'll get closer to two dollars
Speaker 11and a dollar fifty wow gee even money um yeah it's uh yeah look the stable aren't overly worried about the no the the rain i think david hayes was quoting if it got into the heavy range he would start to get concerned crap himself yeah well he's poetic if nothing else our man dave um part-time work for hallmark and the and zach and zach i don't think i look i don't think i'll take zach with me on holiday i think he's he's a little a little on the pessimistic bless him um but uh look he does play it down a bit and but look it's look it's going to be a and i cannot wait to watch the race it is fascinating how far this race has come from its inception to to what it is um but if i'm team tempted or jimmy star or certainly ninja on heavy ground i'm licking my chops i'll tell you that he
Speaker 2i'd love to see you lick your chops he's no conor mcgregor is he zach purton but that's just the different athletes and how they approach um their their big their big days like zach purton as david hayes point out because if this was his explanation to me gator when you're trying to work out the the athletes and the people that you talk about it doesn't matter what sport it is um but david was telling us because he's got so much expectation on him every time he steps out in hong kong because he's riding a lot of favorites he's under a lot of pressure because he's on all these favorites and everyone is backing zach purton so when he's interviewed about any horse he plays it down a little bit but now this is going to the extreme when he plays down koeing rising like the gate's no good it's a better gate for tempted um i'm scared on a heavy track the grass is too long i don't know blah blah blah so i reckon deep down he's because he's a big time player zach i reckon he's confident that he'll just blind them away to tell you the truth
Speaker 11yeah look it is basic psychology isn't it um and he probably probably doesn't even know he's doing it it's just subliminal yeah and it really works for him and i've seen a million athletes in in in a million different sports tackle it the same way they just take pressure off themselves and i think it's a great way to operate and it keeps you humble too so
Speaker 2there's a bonus there yeah um so tempted are you happy with gate number one if
Speaker 11you're the blue army um no i i would have i would have chosen seven or eight if i could hand pick it um but i can't they'll need a plan i think there's no way in the world i think the fence will be the a1 spot is that i think we all can agree on that so they'll need a plan and some clear running
Speaker 2because the plan is like you don't want to ride her outside your comfort zone but there is a chance that you could be three back the fence here when there's a door and a few other horses that might get in front of her yeah
Speaker 11the way she's been winning ridden cold it's really difficult to um to uh to put her in the race i know jimmy star was put into the race last year and ran well but i'm convinced he's a better horse ridden like he wasn't in manicato and sue so um yeah so they'll they'll need a plan they'll need some luck
Speaker 2if it's a heavy to slade track what horses do you want to be with the minor play six gator
Speaker 11oh look i'm not changing any of my selections so i think kating rising just picks himself he's really difficult to to tip against you know i remember tipping against winx in a cox plate she only won by 15 i think and um you just look like an idiot um tempted to logical danger ninja is an extremely talented athlete you know he's not all there mentally but um i went back and looked at his two heavy track wins and certainly get through it and jimmy star back to his best latest that's my top four um and happy to stick with that
Speaker 2yeah all right then um giggy kick yeah so i think
Speaker 11if it gets really really wet um it's advantage him with the blinkers on he certainly tried well in them so um he's competitive without winning i think what
Speaker 2about the waller runners angel capital with the blinkers on and jolly
Speaker 11star angel capital on a wet track i don't care what's on her head she's at that he's a thousand to one plus he's not a horse and jolly star wants it soft as well um you saw her brought undone by magic time and co on heavy she still ran quite well but she's not as
Speaker 2effective what about um headwall he loves her own effective track
Speaker 11yep it's going really well and a forgivable run latest and obviously if he didn't do well i think he's going to need a little bit more practice i think it's going to be a good run and i think he's going to need a little bit more practice i think he's going to need a little
Speaker 2bit more practice i think he's going to need a little bit more practice i think he's going to need a little bit more practice i think he's going to need a little bit more practice i think he's going to need a little bit more practice i think he's going to need a little bit more practice i think he's going to need a little bit more practice i think he's going to need a little bit more practice i think he's going to need a little bit more practice i think he's going to need a little

We'll come back with all of your questions next here on this Thursday morning.
Speaker 1Text us on 0-4-double-9-7-3-6-7-3-6.
Speaker 2Well, thanks to Garrett's Horse and Hound. You can send us a text on 0-4-double-9-7-3-6-7-3-6 to ask our coach, David Gately, a question. Or you can watch us live streaming on Facebook as well as racing.com. But on Facebook, if you leave a comment in the comment section, we'll give away the best question there as well. A double pass to the Giddy Up Cox Plate Luncheon there on the Friday, of course, before the Cox Plate. Let's get stuck into this, Gator. Lucas says, hey, G and Gator. If you could. If you could know one thing before every race that isn't available to the general public, whether that's a horse's true fitness, the stable's confidence, or how the track will actually play, what would you choose and why? That
Speaker 11is a good
Speaker 2question
Speaker 11to kick
Speaker 2off proceedings, Lucas.
Speaker 11It's a clubhouse leader
Speaker 2for the
Speaker 11past, boys. That is a
Speaker 2clubhouse leader.
Speaker 11Beat. Yeah, no, track pattern every day of the week. But it's a great question. Yeah. I just think if you get a level playing. If you get a level playing on the field, then, you know, the onus is really on me or us. And that's the way it should be.
Speaker 2Hi, G. This is from Doc. Can you please ask Gator what his thoughts are on Platinum Pearl's chances in the Thousand Guineas and her last start run?
Speaker 11Yeah, look, she was good last time in a decent race. Much like at a key stage, it was only start number three. So, you know, as a rule, the Frankels, they do continually improve with racing, don't they? And she gets to 1600. So, I could certainly make a case. And she's sixth top rated runner.
Speaker 2I can't work out this market in the Thousand Guineas, Gator. I reckon it was an afterthought in a way for Kiramar to go to the Thousand Guineas with St. Lee Dancer because they didn't expect her to do what she did on that rain affected track there at Flemington. But now she's 320. Like they're talking, regular ambition could be Lindsay Park's next superstar. She's 420. Can you explain the market there for me? You got over there. The Bridge 6, the Armis at 9. Ice Lady was far too good for St. Lee Dancer last start. She's $12. And that's the way Jack Turnbull's gone with his $100 staking plan. Pretty Baby, $10. The Armis at 9. They had to pay up the late entry fee for her. And then Lara Antepova at 20 to 1. Sing Your Song at 20 to 1.
Speaker 11Yeah, it's a fascinating race, isn't it? Because there's a few of these that are still so early in their careers. I don't remember too many Thousand Guineas. And a few of them hitting it at starts three and four. One of them over the bridge is jumping 1,200 or 1,600 from a wide gate. You've got a few that look to be dynamite on wet tracks. But they're going to get a good track on Saturday. And then you've got Diamus coming down from Sydney. But Cherry Bombshell came here and didn't do anything. So I'm just not sure where they're at. What I do think is Regal Ambition's a really, really good filly. And that was the win of a good one last time, coming wide before the turn. It wasn't a great day to be a swooper early. Yet she swooped over pretty bad. But she'd been flying. So I'm more than happy with her on top. She'll be in the parlay. And Saintly Dancer, fourth pick. Ice Lady, seventh pick. A few for the quaddie. But Regal Ambition, more than happy as our top-rated runner.
Speaker 2So you've got Regal Ambition and Over the Bridge, one and two. But they've both got awkward draws. How do you expect them to get into the contest, their gator?
Speaker 11Well, they just want a level playing field. So if I get that and tempo, then they're good enough to win. From what I saw on Wednesday, there were certainly positive signs. So that's the way I go into most meetings and sometimes to my own detriment.
Speaker 2What about the tempo there? Are you worried that maybe the two Ma runners might dominate on speed? They're an Ice Lady and Saintly Dancer?
Speaker 11Well, what sometimes happens, not always, young athletes getting to a trip for the first time, there can be more speed than what's expected. As a rule, even without that factor, so that's a bit of a guess, you've got pretty good speed, haven't you, with Saintly Dancer and Ice Lady. You think rolling along with a strong enough clip, Grinzinger Hart's another one who you'd think would push forward. Lady Antipova probably there. Diamus there, without necessarily wanting to lead, but they had pressure. So, and even Over the Bridge may press on. I wonder what they'll do there. But, so I'm expecting a truly run 1,000 guineas and let the best horse win if it's a level playing field.
Speaker 2Hi, Gator and Gara. Thoughts on Stafford in the Caulfield Cup? The market has missed it, in my opinion. Two starts back at run a few lengths off Lambourne, who was fourth in the King George behind Kalpana and Calandergan. And Bay City Roll, who just ran second in the Arc de Triomphe behind Dariz. We didn't miss it. I think part of our future show, correct me if I'm wrong, we're on a 100 to 1. I think we are anyway. I think we are anyway on Stafford. Give it strength, Gator.
Speaker 11Yeah, no, 100s is a good price. No left, it was going around well. And look, I think it's an international year, so he's in the mix. I just thought the other two internationals would be better suited, Caulfield Cup. I thought Stafford may be better suited with some Joe out of the track and maybe a longer trip. So I've just worked around him, but I've sort of contradicted myself, haven't I? Thinking it's going to be an international year.
Speaker 2Morning, Gareth and Gator. Not seeing a natural leader with the Euphrates. He's not getting a start. Is it she's a hustler in rural supremacy? Or maybe one of the internationals?
Speaker 11Rural supremacy, yeah, I think he's quite a. I mean, he did a great job of leading last time, albeit he's not going to get away with that minus 11 link sort of stuff. Enfajar could easily lead this field, I think, from gate one. I think Kingswood goes forward as well from a wide draw, and she's a hustler, probably same story. So you're right. It doesn't look fearsome, but there's 18 athletes and they're all looking at the same data.
Speaker 2Hey, Gator, I like Chains of Love and Race 5 at Roundwick. I'm also liking Gallant Sun and Race 6 at Caulfield. Can I get your thoughts, please? We'll start off with Chains of Love in Sydney.
Speaker 11Yeah, can win. Certainly 53 and a half. Bolted in fresh last prep. Went on to run well in the Creswick Stakes at Flemington. A light, the latest trial win. And third top rated runner, Herr. Who was the other one?
Speaker 2Gallant Sun. Gallant Sun.
Speaker 11Yeah, it was a sneaky good run last time. And he's got some form around a few of these. So I wouldn't say he's out of it by any stretch of the imagination either. And where have I got him?
Speaker 2Fifth pick. Hey, Gator, 0-2 good in the last at Caulfield seems over. Surely they will be coming down the outside by race 10. That's from Jay.
Speaker 11Look, I think she's over the odds for sure. I saw $12 there yesterday when the Oz Racing MO went out. I liked the trial. The $1,100 was a bit too sharp for her fresh last time in. But she's won two of her other four first up runs. And second pick.
Speaker 2Morning, boys. How is Ice Lady $12 when she beat Saintly Dancer last start? E-Brown sticks too. I'm really strong as well on Gigi's mistruth. What's Gator's thoughts there on Gigi's mistruth?
Speaker 11Yeah, I think she probably becomes our best bet for the day now. Gigi's given Calimari ringers apparently in Sydney. Yeah, so I think she's just probably too good for these mares, even with the 61. Ice Lady, yeah, you can easily make a case and you have made it. You know, beating Saintly Dancer the latest and that horse wins by six. You don't need to be the late, great Dean Lester, do you?
Speaker 2No. Is Charwolf a good chance against Autumn Glow with the fast-paced wet ground and Blinker's Gator?
Speaker 11Charwolf, I think he is a serious danger. I think he's flying the Blinker's back on as a reference there and he loves wet ground. I would not be surprised at all. It's one of those races she's really hard to tip against because she wins every time she runs up to 2,000 metres. But he's a big danger.
Speaker 2Yeah. Who's a better chance, Autumn Glow or Cain Rising?
Speaker 11Who's a better chance? I still think Cain Rising. I would, if I'm framing a market and had to lose my money, I don't think I'd be giving $1.50 or better. And Autumn Glow, I could probably give about $1.50. So that probably answers that.
Speaker 2Thoughts right now with Gator? Hasn't done with the Calamari reviews that well? And you sound a bit crook too, Gator. You're okay? Well,
Speaker 11I just picked up a bit of a cold from a lovely, good sharing and then.
Speaker 2Oh, Suze, no, not on. No, not a great time. Yeah, best clubman.
Speaker 11She's out, best clubman. And then we went to the James concert Sunday and singing our lungs out. So that didn't help. Okay. What a great gig, that one.
Speaker 2Yeah. What concert was it?
Speaker 11James, a band from the. They're still around, obviously. They're not dead, but their big album was in the 90s, like all great music.
Speaker 2I was more Olivia Dean operator last week.
Speaker 11Yeah. Nice work.
Speaker 2You're the man I always wanted. Sydney. Stakes looks very hard, but I think Beeman is a good chance. Gets Purton, who won the race last year. last year forgive last start and was huge at ranwick first up
Speaker 11yeah it was a big run went to probably didn't get around caulfield i don't think so forgivable can make a case at a big price can
Speaker 2you ask ada gareth he thought some cavalry girl really thought she would start at dollar 90 on shorter with her form she goes around the sprint race there at caulfield saturday look i think it
Speaker 11was a wet track she would be dollar 90 um she's hardly inept on dry ground by any stretch yeah and she's dynamited a thousand meters so she's going to take a power of beating no doubt hi g
Speaker 2unit can you ask ada about beam when we ask that question harry from aubrey what horses are the best chances to do the cup double keep up the great work obviously wine dark sea
Speaker 11well we think if he and enfa jar can win a caulfield cup then they might be chances to do the double i've i've i'm taking internationals you first leg caulfield cup but different international second leg um is how i've played my doubles this
Speaker 2year lenny boy says hey gator your thoughts and treasure the moment her long-term aim has been the cup two runs ago she ran second to jenny last start was 15 lengths off land legend at the 600 meters and kept grinding to finish only four lengths behind him sure surely a great each way
Speaker 11bet yeah look she probably gets a good run um you know and and she's she's shaping like she wants 2500 now i didn't think she was dynamited the trip as a three-year-old philly she won the oaks but um i thought she'd had enough on the line but she looks more seasoned now um i've got her outside the top eight but i wouldn't faint at all if she ran well
Speaker 2the kiwi platinum pantheon is a great each way play in my opinion in the silver eagle this is from 790 won't mind the wedding we'll be strong late anything gator yeah
Speaker 11good good return from that horse the challenge with the silver eagle is baywatch and skyhook with group one horses everything else in the race looks a benchmark 100 listed um so i think they've got a class edge on a
Speaker 2few hey team can you ask gator's thoughts on scripted race 3 number 14 just can't seem to win always in the finish not often you have a horse that every time you go the races you think you're a good chance that's from taylor um a part owner from adelaide good on you taylor
Speaker 11yeah good luck with the horse good to have a smart one isn't it but um yeah look um this is a pretty hot race i think for scripted and the the set weights and penalties make it make it uh challenging hi
Speaker 2guys seeing is believing saint george two starts ago wide the whole race five wide around the home turn had no right at all keep on coming an absolutely outstanding run to run second last start too far back on a bog track forgive that one i just can't ignore what i've seen with my own eyes what do you think gator that's from wayne well
Speaker 11i picked up every single word of that sentence except the name of the horse um saint george oh yeah no clearly forgive run latest he doesn't get through heavy ground um but he was flying prior to that agree 100 he's um where is his third pick for me
Speaker 2or fourth one of them ruben says concord connie is immoral i don't know if she's immoral but she's hard to beat yeah she wants
Speaker 11a level playing field she wants speed if she gets all of that and gets around caulfield she's um going to be mighty hard to beat but there are some some unknowns hey g i
Speaker 2really like i'm ari in race four and overexcited in race eight at caulfield i think asterix can run a sneaky good race in the cup and should improve big time over the 2400 meters what's gator's thoughts i am aria race four and then overexcited in race eight
Speaker 11yeah i'm aria we gave her a good hope at a huge price later she went down narrowly and you can't suck too much given the winner covered more ground than us but gee she ran well and she was terrific in the captain teams coming through underneath them against the pattern so um i think she'll run 1400 and she's in the mix overexcited clear top pick for me in the blue sapphire i think she's really smart yeah back on the dry ground if you can test the tono glow you can win these what
Speaker 2about um asterix in the cup yeah look he's
Speaker 11probably in that second or third layer of chances isn't he um he's going really well but is he going caulfield cup well gator's thoughts on kingswood yeah he's a winning hope i wish he drew a gate um i think he's going super he's up on strong speeds the last two he's traveling well he's just finding a couple a bit stronger but that's been it's you know wait for age so um it looks a really good caulfield cup lead up to my eye he's been to 2100 meters only once yeah and he didn't finish off but he struck a very wet track that day what about
Speaker 2i hope he wins chris waller's best chance according to chris and the caulfield
Speaker 11cup yeah kept closing latest and on that you know we think would peak for this um to 2400 so all of those signs say she's there to run well um i think she'll run well without winning
Speaker 2um well tempted would that turn of foot be taken away if it is a heavy track with her gator
Speaker 11well i mean she's proven in it isn't she so um i think they would probably prefer it firmer than heavy but you'd have to ask them um just surprised they didn't you'll accept but um yeah she's um she's going to be hard to beat
Speaker 2um jane gator what do you think of doubt times chances in the blue sapphire tomorrow was the top run in the dane hill i think on a dry track we'll go close and there's a sneaky chance from the cool more that's from gary
Speaker 11yeah i've got no idea what his ceiling is he's only had two starts but both of them have been good you know he went to um to the dane hill 10 weeks between runs and he's another one a couple in that race who look much better suited on dry ground agree and he's going to be hard to beat and gets to 1200 fourth pick for
Speaker 2christ sakes where's the parlay i'm going to wait just till here i'm sorry everyone but i'm going to wait just a little bit because i missed i i thought well what why you're gonna you're gonna listen to the coach the selection meeting before you get the team if you know what i mean yeah you can't just get that that team and then leave the team meeting you know what i mean i'm morning g can you ask gator about churchill's choice in race three at ramwick
Speaker 11yeah so this is an interesting little race sorry i just why are you laughing we get these hundreds
Speaker 2of text messages come through but some just pop up and um we had a big bunch of just come through there and then tanya tex gator sounds hot today
Speaker 11yeah the photo doesn't back that up um keep going son keep going yeah yeah ish went back in the tibby and made good ground one second up this horse her mile form's really good this is a good race um six pick
Speaker 21-800 gator here is
Speaker 11pocket full of cash in
Speaker 2the blue sapphire chance back on top of the ground i think can
Speaker 11improve for sure trial really well with natural fling like the debut win then perhaps two wet lands time so gets another go um hey
Speaker 2gator does media training cover staying calm and composed if your tip has been beaten by a lip and really should have won that's from joe
Speaker 11this is challenging so um define media training so i started tvn and they said here's a camera sit in front of it that was the extent of the media training um and in a shock to no one was crap at it but um i think you just learn yeah yeah oh yeah um i think you just learned to just stick to the things you actually know about and do your research and and and you're okay you can get around most things but it is challenging though when when something doesn't go your way it's um you've got to put your your emotion and your money aside and and cover it for the the greater good that that's that's what has to under underpin everything i think i
Speaker 2think why you're such a success on get on and i don't think media training can teach you this but just being your authentic self gator with your dry sense of humor works beautifully see so you just keep doing what you're doing um that's why you've been a legend 12 i reckon 20 years now it's been that long silver eagle i've got to get we're in a hurry gator because he's telling me i'm i'm in trouble here with my timing bave whack um should he win over 1300 meters well the last
Speaker 11time he was at the trip he beat all by jolly star yeah and and she beat him right on the line so yeah this is a fascinating race because he's better credentialed skyhook doesn't have that same form but skyhook looks to have come back enormous um so i didn't know which way to go i lent to baywatch for that reason
Speaker 2though um gator i'm with juja kibu in the saint ledger they're telling me he could have won the corfield cup surely he wins that or is that just too easy no i think i
Speaker 11think it's a perfect consolation prize for him yeah um especially with
Speaker 2a bit of rain about yep all right then should we back calamari ring gator in
Speaker 11sydney i didn't want to ask that
Speaker 2question i didn't want to ask that
Speaker 11yeah she's top pick in the regional island but all acceptors of late they've been going well have they so yeah i'm sort of pulling their tail a bit
Speaker 2um gareth i can't believe you haven't mentioned pride of jenny you must think she can't win i don't know about that she's she's always a chance gator isn't she
Speaker 11well she's always a chance yes because she runs fast time from the front um so hence you win a lot of
Speaker 2races um it's a disgrace gareth you haven't mentioned the kosciuszko with gator um so here we go this is the final question we'll leave you But you tipped the Kosciuszko. -
Speaker 11Yeah, we spoke about chains of love though, didn't we? Yeah, we did. I'm going to tip Soya Pence, who won really well in July, kept fresh, was really good in this race last year and meets Chidiak four kilos better. So, look, a few for the early quaddi, but Soya Pence on top.
Speaker 2Beautiful. And the last one, sing your song because I've had something on in the guineas. Am I mad?
Speaker 11Sing your song. No, outside of the top six. But I wouldn't say mad. Mad's a stretch.
Speaker 2Yeah. You're parlay gator.
Speaker 11All right. We've had to change tack here. So, we'll go Caulfield race three, number one.
Speaker 2GG's myth. Sorry, I'm just – sorry, I should have interrupted you. You're getting worse. You're nearly Jimmy Jakes-ing me here. So, go again. Sorry, sorry, sorry. Go. Take it away.
Speaker 11All right. Let's do it. Race three, number one, GG's myth truth. Into race seven, number nine, Regal Ambition. Into race eight. Number 12, overexcited. Here's a parlay.
Speaker 2Two, three. Race three, number one at Caulfield. Race seven, number nine. Race eight, number 12. Parlay two and three there at Caulfield. It's been a mighty effort, gator, to hang on like you have. You look after that voice. You'll be back at Caulfield on Saturday?
Speaker 11Yeah, they don't give out purple hearts for this sort of stuff, but I think they should. Yes. I'll be out at Caulfield on Saturday. I'll have a bit of cover this time after third-degree burns out there Saturday. It was awesome. But I'll be out there. At Caulfield. So, yeah, plenty of punters. They had a great day. It was a lot of fun, and the vibe was brilliant.
Speaker 2Love racing. Love the vibe. And, yeah, you slip, slop, and slap, and you probably need a bit of vitamin D to look after that voice. So go and get them and rest up, gator.
Speaker 11Take care. Go well, punters.
Speaker 2Go too hard on Suze. It's not her fault that you got Suze. No, no. Yeah.
Speaker 11No, you've got to ride the good with the bad.
Speaker 2Good on you, mate. Thanks for that, David. Ciao. There's gator's game plan. Bob Peters to join me next. Of course, the owner-breeder of Cosmic Crusader. Welcome back to Giddy Up, Gareth Hall with you. I've got one for you in the derby. I've just got confirmation from Sam Friedman that hierarchy was very good through the line. We had a chat. Sam Friedman yesterday. Hierarchy in the derby. $17 there. We bet $3.65. He'll go to the VARs and then maybe on to the derby. But that will be the plan. He's that beautifully bred colt. By Dabawi out of Collette. Probably nearly the best bred horse in the country. So he'll head towards the derby. Talking about someone that can breed a good horse, Bob Peters has done that throughout his life. And he's got Cosmic Crusader trying to win a Caulfield Cup for him. On Saturday, the 150th run. And he joins me now here on Giddy Up. G'day, Bob. Thanks for your time. Good morning. Were you more confident with Congressman back in 1988 or Cosmic Crusader in 2026, Bob?
Speaker 12Up until the barrier draw, I was more confident with Cosmic Crusader. My confidence was dented a bit when we drew barrier 17.
Speaker 2Yeah, not ideal, Bob. But hopefully Pikey can weave some of his magic.
Speaker 12Yes, it's hard for him out there when it's a short run to the corner.
Speaker 2Yeah, he just needs a little bit of luck in that first couple of hundred metres. But jeez, he's got the form lines to win a Caulfield Cup, Bob.
Speaker 12Yes, everything was looking good.
Speaker 2Yeah. Talk us through the decision to go to the Caulfield Cup.
Speaker 12I thought originally that there'd be a lot of internationals in the Cox plate, but there isn't. And I thought I'd be racing against Japanese horses and that sort of thing. But no, the race is there and the horses fit. He's got a bit of weight to carry, which is a bit of a nuisance. But still, we'll see how we go.
Speaker 2And 2,400 metres. Are you confident, obviously you are, that he'll get that trip? When you bred this horse, did you think that he would be getting this trip?
Speaker 12Oh, I don't. I think. I think that he'll be OK with the trip. But you never know until they've run it. And you never know what sort of start he gets now because you've got to use the horse up twice. You've got to use him up to get a position or pull him right back to last, one or the other. So you've either got to use him up and then use him up again in the straight to get home or you're coming from a very. a way back to be able to run them down. So it just makes it a bit harder.
Speaker 2You sum it up perfectly, Bob. Like, if you go back all the way to last, you probably can't win. But if you've got to go forward, you don't want to be doing too much work to get to that spot. So, I don't know. Pikey. I reckon Pike will ride a race, Bob.
Speaker 12Oh, well, we'll wait and see. Sometimes he's lucky, sometimes he's not.
Speaker 2Yeah. And that's, at the end of the day, it doesn't matter if you've got the best horse or not. You do need luck in this game.
Speaker 12You do. And people say that a Barry doesn't matter in a distance race. So I'd argue that because, you know, if you've got a decent Barry, you just drop out and you sit there and then you sprint home.
Speaker 2Yeah, I agree with you. Half yours and she's a hustler, those type of horses, especially half yours, you'll come in a few now and he just lands in the spot that he wants to land in. He doesn't have to do any work and then he gets his chance to finish off. You never know, Bob. Who was that? You're my great mate and one of your great servants over the years, Peter Hall. Didn't he land the one-out-one back on the mare that day in Adelaide from a wide gate in a derby?
Speaker 12Oh, I can't remember. I reckon he did. He reminds me all the time. Yeah. Oh, well, he did very well over there.
Speaker 2He did. So he's trained on nicely, Bob. You've been happy with him. What's the report from? From Andrea Leake.
Speaker 12Oh, yes. Yeah, we speak every day and he's coming along really well.
Speaker 2Yeah. And then you'll just see how he pulls up and then you'll hopefully back him up in a cox plate?
Speaker 12That's a bit of an ask, but we'll wait and see.
Speaker 2Yeah, I know. But if he pulls up, you have to, don't you, Bob?
Speaker 12Okay. Well, you have to because, you know, you never know when you'll have him next year. It's fair. But he'd have to pull up well. We're not going to hurt the horse.
Speaker 2No. And, you know, it's not like he doesn't know how to back up. He seems to have a wonderful constitution. He proved that, I reckon, in the summer of last year in Perth, Bob.
Speaker 12Yes, he came. He won an 1800 weight for age and then backed up a week later and ran second, you know, in a 1400 weight for age. So that gives us a bit of confidence.
Speaker 2How is the family, Sandra? Is she, like, is there? You've always had a good horse, but it's. I guess it's exciting to have another horse on this stage, Bob.
Speaker 12Yes, it's always good to win group ones and good to win them in Melbourne.
Speaker 2Yeah. Back home in WA, like Clockwork, I thought went really well the other day over the 1000 again.
Speaker 12Yes, the distance wasn't the right distance for her, but the race has been a bit of a program for her.
Speaker 2Yeah. What's her main aim this time around?
Speaker 12Oh, next start will tell us that, which way we go. Yeah. A couple of different directions. We, you know, the mayor's race has come up, start in the middle of November. She can race in them.
Speaker 2Yeah. If she
Speaker 12happened to be winning things, then she could step up to the bigger races, but I think that would be a bit of a throw at the stumps at this stage.
Speaker 2I think there's a few of the judges here that hopefully she'll get to a railway stage. Is that ambitious or there's still a chance that their dream's still alive, Bob?
Speaker 12Well, I was surprised with people. I kept talking about it for the railway stage. Yeah. She'd be way below the handicap that she'd need to get a run in it. Yeah. But there's a couple of races there that if they win them, they get automatic entry and, you know, maybe we could look at one of them if she was going really well, but that'd be a bit of a leap, I think.
Speaker 2Yeah. You've got chances all throughout that day there in WA. Treasured Legacy. Looking forward to seeing Treasured Legacy. Weston Miss. Very good. Progressive type. Forever Boy goes around the Eurythmics Stakes taking on some of WA's best horses. And then you've got Nicky Anna going around as well. What would be your best chance here, I reckon, Bob?
Speaker 12Maybe Weston Miss, I hope. She hasn't raced for a fair. It's been a while. We've given her a bit of a break and she's just coming back, but she's showing us some ability.
Speaker 2Yeah, she's a daughter of Gaius that was pretty good over the winter. So there we go, mate. If I gave you $100, what would you do with it this weekend, Bob?
Speaker 12Well, as I said, I'd probably have it on Weston Miss.
Speaker 2Beautiful. Race seven, number seven, and we've got it on Cosmic Crusader as well. So it'd be great if you can win this. you've only had to wait since 1988 you've had a couple of cracks at it since then i remember real love went around was it real love i think for darren weir yeah and she was on pace and was brave that day but this is your best chance bob so you go and get them mate we wish you the best of luck you'll be at caulfield yes i'll
Speaker 12be there all right then
Speaker 2well have a good day mate we appreciate you coming on as always thank you there's bob peters 10 44 we're going to take a break on the other side of it it's trial time with dean watling and also maddie morton
Speaker 1join the conversation text us on 0 4 9 7 3 6 7 3 6 live across australia this is giddy up with gareth hall welcome back to giddy up
Speaker 2gareth hall here g um the data says the ramek race course website is telling us that they've had 10.9 mils of rain so they've had 10.9 mils of rain so they've had 10.9 mils of rain since 9 a.m this morning it's raining heavily in sydney it'll be a heavy track for sure well it'll be a heavy track today um but it's only thursday at 10 47 but they've had heavy rain anyone who backed or was thinking of backing cosmic crusader just cashed out their bed or put their coin elsewhere bob um didn't sound too enthused that's from mitchy well that's bob you know unfortunately i can't believe bob doesn't listen to giddy up he would have known there's no japanese horses going to the cosplay uncle bob we told you oh he's a legend that's bob peters for you but um he's right he's 100 right about cosmic crusade it's a difficult draw like pikey can't go all the way back to last because he's no hope if he does that but he needs to go forward and try and land somewhere um and if he gets in look out but he might be exposed so yeah it's um he's got to make a few decisions w pike there from gate 17 and the caulfield cup on saturday with the favorite i don't think he'll start the price he is now i think he'll drift come come the caulfield cup um 10 48 we'll take a break trial time next steve watling will be joining me join the conversation
Speaker 1text us on 0 4 9 7 3 6 7 3 6 live across australia this is giddy up with gareth hall trial time with betsy.com.au's dean watling welcome back to
Speaker 2giddy up dean watling joins us dean oh hello to you good morning g how are you i'm very well brother um where are you at the moment
Speaker 13i'm just down south g just south of woolloongong and shell harbour but no rain here but i know you just touched on the g there's rain at ramwick this morning
Speaker 2yeah we can't get carried away just yet like they tell me it's going to be a heavy track if someone gave me crystal ball it'll be a heavy track but um there is still a lot to play out it's only thursday but i don't know if they expected this rain today so
Speaker 13um i don't think they've expected it all week g i think they only wanted 15 mil on tuesday got 66 and i think today's forecast was one to five so i think if you're going rising g the way to put it is you probably prefer a downfall uh rather than sustained rain throughout the week you think of a pop plant analogy and i think that's a good way to think
Speaker 2of it there we go dean watling from betsy.com.au he's not only our form judge but he knows his weather and he knows what makes a heavy track and what doesn't um i agree with you there heavy heavy rainfall when you talk to liam o'keefe and the the track curators out there they prefer like heavy downfall than just drizzly rain all day um yeah it's going to be interesting you'll be there dino it's taking yourself into the members yeah well gee there
Speaker 13will be no shirt off in the members it'll probably be a little bit rainy on the day too so i won't be doing that g but i'll be there suited up dappered and i'll be joining yourself and a couple other friends for hopefully a big day out
Speaker 2beautiful mate um now let's get to your top five trials we'll start off with uh number five that's all play for bjorn baker
Speaker 13yep a horse that um probably plenty of punters out there do know four-year-old mare she had an outstanding preparation two back sort of skipped through the grounds and ended up in a sunlight behind grafter burners and nashville drac i just didn't come up last preparation was spelled 17 weeks and first up there benchmark 85 beaten by silver wedding at eagle farm spelled another 19 weeks that tells me something was obviously wrong and the trial the other day gee was outstanding really really fast time put a gap in them early and skipped away so bjorn baker's in form so is rachel king and sword play looks one who can knock off a race at the
Speaker 2back end of the carnival the waterhouse and bot camp of stonecrest number four for you there dino
Speaker 13yeah really well bred a full two best of bordeaux gee you probably remember that horse is a tear i think it's at stud now cool morph my memory serves me right so kia ora have this horse uh two trials and then a 20-week swell brought back with a really smart piece of work there ramek on the 6th of october over 740 meters on speed type of horse there's a couple other horses in the race that looked nice but this horse was doing its best work late stonecrest look for a second trial now
Speaker 2three yep a sneaky
Speaker 13one gee if you watch this trial it's back last not doing a whole lot but it's stride it's action it's just ready to get let loose by kieran mcavoy and they do that late in the trial through the line and set a star was really really well put together there in that trial really well bred out of the the smart man nitin purse so good family good horse and a good trainer matthew smith he's another horse trainer in form up here in sydney at the moment then we got spirit bomb michael freeman at number two yeah shows no silks on the racing new south wales website but where's the typical freedman silks there um out the back another one who pierces through late and looks exceptional through the line hard held and not a whole lot asked by this three-year-old gelding so he's a gelding g i dare say they're going to get him into being a race horse we'd love that look for a second trial as well with spirit bomb two words and then
Speaker 2um that's for michael freeman and then number one's pembury tony golan who goes straight now to the next trial and he's going to get him into the next trial and he's going to get him into the next trial and he's going to get him into the cool more yeah forgotten
Speaker 13horse g out of sight out of mind and i had a quick look the odds there for a cool more you're getting around 13 which i think is massive so you reference these horses first up win in a silver shadow put pay to the likes of bangkok hottie and global goal there's a group two and a group one subsequent winner and then just didn't turn up in the furious stake something wrong they've sort of given a five-week freshen up her child the other day was outstanding you look at her as a horse g um and reference this trial she's got tactics and she's got a lot of speed she puts herself into the race and more often than not you see horses down the straight that is the right recipe so phillies have a terrific record she's 13 i don't think she should be that i think she should be a lot closer to second or third elect behind the next episode so number one this week is pembrey and i dare say i'm gonna have a nibble at that futures price i
Speaker 2love it then so pembrey in the cool more we can get more of your tips at betsy.com.au we betting today dino or this week no but
Speaker 13today's yeah it's interesting g no bets today do we have any on saturday i'm just waiting for markets to drop uh we'll get all up on the website for saturday there is a good provincial meeting as well there but um all eyes are on the big features g so not a whole lot of trialers around this week good
Speaker 2on you dino catch up with you tomorrow mate
Speaker 13thank you g
Speaker 2with maddie morton hello to you maddie boy good morning gareth good morning listeners trial guide jaundice we might get through one or two before we take a break hustle and heels julia sandu trains this gallop is your number five trial this week
Speaker 14yeah she's uh been in her best win fresh except for once on a heavy surface has jumped out very well this preparation looks set for another solid return on friday cranburn uh the form from hustle and heels first jump out has worked out very well with a first up winner and a second place getter in a week there most recently on monday she bounced straight to the front kicked on out wide before the turn and scored by a wide margin without overdoing it she as i said she turns up at cranburn on friday and with maddie she's won first up off this sort of turnaround before when she trialed four or five days before the race um that was also at cranburn so the race looks very winnable with conditions underfoot suit
Speaker 2number four unwavering for graham beak yeah unrace three
Speaker 14actually unwavering has gained a solid reputation over the last months with three public performances along the way beat a subsequent winner first time out was okay with that full throttle uh for trial two and better again on monday she traveled on the speed out wide before stretching out smoothly to win decisively unwavering should be very competitive in a maiden
Speaker 2suit all right then so that's hustle and heels and unwavering at five and four we're about to take a break miss verona number three for team hayes okay
Speaker 14miss verona showed some promise prior to her debut in the english challenge at wonga where she ran a fair fifth in spite of pulling up lame uh that form's worked out very well since with the winner global goal subsequently scoring a group one level uh miss verona returned with a well restrained third and close gallop between three stable mates a week before her notable jump out last friday so that's always traveling strongly under a significant restraint while sitting outside the leaders rump before take a break we'll come
Speaker 2back with more of that just in a minute
Speaker 1join the conversation text us on 0-4-double-9-736 736 Live across Australia This is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall
Speaker 2Welcome back to Giddy Up Busy final hour coming your way Andrew Seabrook's not far away The Managing Director at New Zealand Bloodstock We'll catch up with Dan Morton As we kick off the Thursday Form Lounge Chris Nelson, Johnny Kelton as well And then we'll find you some winners Across the three codes today With bag of tips and then we'll finish off With Tassie Time But we're going through Trial Time and Matty Morton Who we call Trial Guys Top five trialers for the week We've gone with the five Hustle and Heels For Julia Sandu, number four was Unwavering For Graham Begg and we'll go back to Number three here for Team Hayes With Miss Verona Here Matty Morton
Speaker 14Yeah as I was saying Gareth She was always travelling strongly under Significant restraint while sitting outside the leaders Rump before moving by Smoothly without any sort of serious urging At Clemmington last Friday She holds a number of entries between Saturday and Monday Saturday's Bendigo I think And Monday is Etruca She's got two on Sunday as well So we'll see where she turns up She's going to be very competitive
Speaker 2Number two, Gentle Steel Another one for the Sandu camp
Speaker 14Yeah she's also a five year old mare I've gone with all the fillies this week Gentle Steel did a great job Winning Fresh for us last campaign Before her form tapered off towards the end Looks set to return in good heart again This time round after two Solid recent efforts Not give it a hard time And got a little tired late first time out In decent company two weeks ago Before a much stronger effort on Monday Bounded to the front with ease And soon assumed command before scoring clearly In a good race on Saturday But from the gate she's drawn one If she can get an easy enough time in front Gentle Steel will give them plenty to chase For a long time Yeah it's just a matter of whether Waterhouse Horse takes her on or she gets her own way She might be very hard to run down like
Speaker 2What about Angel's Fury because she's Your number one We thought we might see her in a Cornwall Might be too late now But she did jump out beautifully the other day
Speaker 14Yeah it's a bit late for a Cornwall They'll probably go for one of those fillies races Over the cut week or something I've never been reluctant to sing the praises Of lightly raced filly Angel's Fury And I'm not going to stop now A shade fresh and white on the speed throughout But too good upon return two weeks ago Where she defeated Ali Barber That horse then stepped out And ran a very good race in the Dane Hill Behind the next episode 5 Days later On Monday Angel's Fury was again drawn wide But was taken back past the midfield this time And Ethan Brown was happy to sit about 4 or 5 deep With cover Moved up smoothly about 7 wide on the turn And strolled past with arrogant disdain To win by a wide margin The rest went up to much But it was a stylish performance in fair time She's ready to return And the others will certainly know Angel's Fury means business on race day
Speaker 2How much money did you make of Paris yesterday From your black book It was impressive first up in this country for Kira Ma
Speaker 14Well Paris she was 8 into about 350 And don't forget Mr. Whiskers Who was 16 into 5 So it wasn't all mine But we got a little bit out of that I hope the listeners did too
Speaker 2Well done mate We appreciate your time as always And I think we should be backing from your black book
Speaker 14Yeah well like I said I think that filly will run well on Saturday Gentle steel If she gets her own way in front But I think that filly will run well on Saturday She's worth putting in for a place in the multis And the other one is race one Sorry my internet's just gone down again The Trotter horse in race one
Speaker 2Okay yes I know A few good judges tipping that galloper there In that first race Yeah Willow's on board
Speaker 14And out to 2,000 metres She'd sit perfectly by Russian Rock
Speaker 2Russian Rock Yeah
Speaker 14That's the one
Speaker 2Yeah That's a good lead up to the Derby that race Absolutely I hope
Speaker 14that sets everyone up well for the weekend
Speaker 2Good on you Matty Thanks for that Cheers Gareth There we go Matty Morton The man that they call Trial Guy Always great to catch up with our next guest Well he's had some career In the Bloodstock game He's the Managing Director at New Zealand Bloodstock Always great to have him on Giddy Up His name is Andrew Seabrook Who joins us now Good morning Andrew Thanks for your time
Speaker 15Morning Morning Gareth
Speaker 2Pleasure Exciting to see you again In time the Ready to Run sale Because you have a look at horses like Charles Wolfe Who's going to be hard to beat In a King Charles again on Saturday Gringotts And Lucky Swain S Golden 60 You've got War Machine Who's going to be tough to beat According to J.D. Hayes On Saturday as well And the classic winner in War Monker It's been one hell of a sale For New Zealand Bloodstock With the stars that it's been able to produce
Speaker 15It really has Gareth It's amazing how far the sales Come in the last four years Four or five years You know like turnovers Gone from 10 to 40 million Average has gone from like 35 grand to 150,000 And the gap now between the yearling sales Our book one sale And the Ready to Run sale Is really really close And I know you and I Have been talking about it For probably two or three years now And one day maybe It'll overtake the yearling sales That's how strong it has become
Speaker 2And when you see the Asia market And the interest they have in your sale And I think the greatest Compliment that you're getting Andrew Is that a few of your rivals Are trying to catch you They're about 20 lengths off you But they're trying to catch you up With the breeze ups these days Because it is a changing market People want quick returns Trainers want to get a horse Where they go Well we'll be racing in three months Four months time
Speaker 15Yeah it suits the Asia market beautifully Hong Kong buyers love coming down here And not having to wait And what have you But I'll tell you what Even though Hong Kong I think they spend 17 of the 40 million last year Australia has really grown A lot of Australians coming over here And buying the horses And hopefully we can win The King Charles with the Chow Wolf On Saturday But it's not just about the sale With pinhookers these days And the pinhookers as Gareth A lot of our big successful studs Are holding back horses Holding back horses That would normally have gone To the yearling sales And now going to this breeze up sale So the quality has Risen as a result of that
Speaker 2We're seeing some of the big farms as well Then you'd think that they would do it But they are holding back horses as well For the ready to run sale And even we had Sam Williams On the other day From Little Avondale And it's part of their business plan These days They're identifying horses That they think will be better In November than they would Say back in January
Speaker 15Yeah the days are gone Where you have your fold And it just automatically goes To the end of sales And as you say You're like So Little Avondale And Waikato Stud And Cambridge They're identifying These horses early That's my ready to run horse And I think that's only Going to become stronger As time goes on Especially with the influence Of Hong Kong And China's been a really Big growing market for us Gareth Because now the mainland Chinese Can be members of the Jockey Club So they're coming down here now And buying horses For that To take back to Hong Kong
Speaker 2To race And with your team Do you help your vendors now With trying to pick Which horses would be better Suited to which sale?
Speaker 15No They are experts Sometimes the smaller vendors Might ask And breeders might ask For advice On whether they should go To the full sale Or yearling sale Or two year old sale But you know We've got such professional Horse men and women And that's the other thing With our breeze up sale They're such genuine sellers The consignors here Have to sell Gareth I mean it's not as though It's their livelihood They can't pass the horse in And take it to Ellerslie and run For $150,000 Like you can In Melbourne and Sydney So It's a very genuine sale Where the sellers Have got to sell And You know Our weak dollar Huge You know You've probably heard us Going on about How weak our dollar is For a while now But it really is It's a 20% discount For you Australians So Yeah get in
Speaker 2Yeah And Jesus Stallions are batting You always punch above your weight But you've been a proud Country when it's When it comes to Breeding stars But Like you think It's the Hunter Valley Or these days in Victoria And the Gamby But You've got Like Sword Estates Produced Warwoven Who's the Golden Rose And the Caulfield Guineas Winner this year The stallion making races Um Satano Glow's Doing a great job She's got a filly and a half In Satano Aladdin Obviously Sham Express Is the best horse In the world In Carling Rising And Per and Kando As Sammy Williams Keeps on telling me Gareth he's the Gift that keeps on giving And geez Jimmy Starr's done A wonderful job For him as well So Um And then Ace High Isn't he underrated Like he's He's started to produce Like good horses And he always has But Blind Races are beauty
Speaker 15Absolute beauty I mean what a Quinella for the Kiwis In the In the Caulfield Guineas And And looks like They're both going to The Cox Plate Uh Gareth But you're right about Our stallions They're going so well And Yeah You know you take a horse Like Per and Kando Who you just mentioned He's He started his career Out at three and a half Thousand dollars Down in the Lavendale And now he's Now he's fifty thousand Um I mean Ace High I think he's Twelve and a half Thousand dollars Uh Sort of state When he This crop Were twenty thousand He's gone up to fifty But Which is You know Good money for a New Zealand stallion So but The value there is Is so good too And look Take a horse like Tarzino Who Yeah Looks like He's He's got the favourite For the VRCO It's very impressive Of the Was it the Roman Consul On Saturday Now going to the Spring Champions So yeah now Stallions are going well At the moment
Speaker 2Yeah Miss Waititi there Another New Zealand Um Yeah Affiliate That Mick Price and Michael Kent Jr., they can pick a good New Zealand horse. Mick Price, he's absolutely.
Speaker 15Yeah, loves a New Zealand horse, does McPrice, and hopefully she's running in theory on Saturday, so hopefully she can win that.
Speaker 2So you've got 11 lots by Ace High, I think 9 by Perincano, 2 by Sham Express, and 12 by Centeno Aladdin. And these breeze-ups, we were able to watch them, of course. They were happening last week. What was the feedback, what you were hearing from the buyers and the vendors regarding your breeze-ups at Tarapa?
Speaker 15Yeah, well, the beautiful thing about our breeze-up, we had about 400 breeze-ups on Monday, Tuesday at Tarapa on the grass track, Gareth, and really consistent over the two days. Day one averaged 10.75, and day two averaged 11 seconds. The videos go up live on the internet on our website tomorrow, so everyone can watch the replays and what have you. I think Racing.com are also having them on their TV. But really. Really happy. Just bear in mind when buyers are looking at the times, that Tuesday we had massive headwinds, so they were a bit slower than the Monday. So just be a little bit careful there when assessing times. But really happy with how the 400-odd horses breezed up and looking forward to sailing in about a month's time.
Speaker 2And as David Hayes pointed out when we were talking to him this morning regarding breeze-up horses, and we've bought a few giddy-up horses with Lindsay Park at your breeze-up sale. It's all about, like. It's changed so much these days with these owners and the trainers and the bloodstock agents trying to pick your horse at a breeze-up sale. Most horses can run, as David pointed out, 10.5, but it's the way that they're being prepared now. It's difficult to fool the buyers these days, and there's so much information that they can gather. Your length of stride, they can analyse all of the data with the different technology that certain people have these days. So there's so much information that you can get to make up your decision on what horse you want to be buying at these breeze-ups.
Speaker 15It's such a transparent sale in that there's so much information available and quite an easy sale to operate with all that information. And just people love judging for themselves what they like breezing up and what have you, look at their action. It's not all about the time. Sure, it helps to run a nice time and have a good action, but it's far more than that. We even had an American. We had an American down here for the breeze-ups this week doing the stride data and the stride length. And, yeah, it's amazing all the data that you can gather and what have you. But at the end of the day, the horses can come from anywhere, and some of our champions out of the sale have made anywhere from $40,000 to sort of $350,000. So I'm expecting another good sale next month, Gareth.
Speaker 2Just takes the guessing out of it a little bit in a way. I just asked Sam Beats, and he's pretty good. Every time he tells me to buy a horse, I usually go on to be a state source. So we'll see when we try our luck again. But I'm looking forward to watching this sale unfold once again. It's always interesting. How do we get involved if you're from Australia? It's like you just bring up the New Zealand Bloodstock travel team, and you can book into Karaka for the sale. Is that right, Andrew?
Speaker 15Yeah, that's right. Probably the easiest way is just to email travel at nzb.co.nz. And, Harriet? Or Victoria will take care of accommodation, bookings, and what have you. We've got a wonderful hotel here on site that is filling quickly. I know you've stayed there before, Gareth. It's a beautiful spot there, but it's sort of a 200-meter walk from the complex. But yeah, just email [email protected], and we'll take care of everything. Speaker 2It's going to be a popular sale. There's no doubt about that once again, especially with the 20% discount the Aussies are getting. So, yeah. I think you're going to have a lot of Australians that will be interested to try and find the next Mr. Brightside or a Charwolf or a Golden 60 or an Antino. So, we'll see how we can go, mate. We appreciate you coming on as always.
Speaker 15Appreciate it, Gareth. Thanks a lot.
Speaker 2There's Andrew Seabrook, the Managing Director at New Zealand Bloodstock. Time for a break. On the other side of it, the Thursday Form Lounge. We'll head over to the West and catch up with Dan Morton. It's time for the Thursday Form Lounge. Thanks to the Rising Sun Hotel in South Melbourne. Can't wait for our Calcutta or our Melbourne Cup Eve function there on the Monday night before the Melbourne Cup at the Rising Sun Hotel, South Melbourne. So, backing winners with premium steaks, high-quality service, and the thrill. Live every race day. The Rising Sun Hotel in South Melbourne, a very popular venue at this time of the year. You can check out racingqueensland.com.au for where Queensland is racing today. On Saturday, we're at Doombin, and Chris Nelson is about to join us now to go through his best bets. Before that, I'll read out Johnny Kelton's best bets, thanks to Racing SA at Morpherville on Saturday. He likes race three, number seven, Autumn Rainbow. His next best comes up in race one, horse number one, and I'm a man's whore. Race nine, number 14, is his value. So, his best is race three, number seven. His next best is race one, number one, and his value comes up in race nine, horse number 14. Chris Nelson now joins us here, thanks to Racing Queensland, for his best at Doombin on a Saturday afternoon. G'day, Chris-o. How are you going? Good, thank you, mate. What do you like on Saturday?
Speaker 16Well, look, it's a day where there's a few shorties. Unfortunately, when I did the form, I thought, well, these look good things, and they've come up pretty short. So, which is always a shame. I'll mention them. Particularly, race 10, number four, Golden Strand, looks absolutely just beautifully placed against just our local opposition off that Sydney win first up. So, race 10, number four, the best, but getting a price is the problem. The other one, Propaganda, race eight, number 12, looks well-placed also. Now, a couple that are better odds, race five, number 13, Hilarious, resumes this one, trained by Team Sears there on the Gold Coast. Good form last preparation, did win first up and second up. I did like the recent trial. Gate number one suits, three kilos off for Jade Hampson, so down to 54 and a half. Has one on soft ground, which is what we might get on Saturday. So, ticks a lot of boxes there. Just looking for some market support being first up, but I think we'll run well. That's race five, number 13, Hilarious. And one of Tony Golan's, the import, race six, horse number seven, he's true blue. I thought he's run first up behind Mercy and was good. He was making. Nice ground there. He cut the margin to just over a length on the line. I had 59, carries the same weight. He does step up in distance on Saturday up to 13.50. Now, he draws out. I suppose that's a bit of a sticking point. We'll know more after scratchings on Saturday, how many of those come out and how much. Well, how further in he can come with the barriers. But I think he's got a good each-way chance, and we'll get each-way about him. So, race six, number seven, he's true blue. Both of those each-way, the other two look like good things, but a price is the problem.
Speaker 2That is the problem. But, you know, you never know about the time. We had Zach Pert gave his best ride there yesterday. It was $2.10. It started $4. Paulie Sebastiani couldn't believe his account when he woke up the next day. He got double what he thought he was going to get. It's the best feeling of all time overnight. Like, you put your Hong Kong bets on, and all of a sudden, it pays double that you thought it would pay.
Speaker 16Paulie's blessed. That never happens to me. I wake up the next day, and it's half what I thought I would get.
Speaker 2Yeah, yeah. Well, you know, he's blessed. He doesn't miss these days with our. Bet365 Boost horse. He's been on fire. I reckon that horse you're tipping in race six. He's true blue. Yeah, he was the horse that started off his career in the UK. He was an Ascot runner. Yeah, for First Light Racing.
Speaker 16He's only had eight starts. He's had three of those in Australia, and his two last preparation were quite good. The second up one was an excellent effort, over 1,300. So, yeah, 1,350 ideal. It's just that barrier that's a sticking point at the moment.
Speaker 2Good on you, Chris. Thanks for that, mate. Thanks, Gareth. Cheers. There's Chris Nelson. Check out racingqueensland.com.au for where Queensland is racing today. We'll take a break. We'll continue on the Thursday Form Lounge next.
Speaker 1The Giddy Up Bag of Tips for Oz Equipment Rentals. Supplying equipment to the construction, mining, and roadworks industries, ozequipment.com.

It comes up in race number one at Warrnambool, and it is trained by Tom Dabernig. It is race one, number 11, Villa Grande. Okay, $3.50 there, the boost with Bet365. Yes, need to bounce back after yesterday. Leon Qua was very, very disappointing. Let's have a look good on you, Paulie. Benny Iscariot, Warrnambool, likes race three, number 11, Girl with a Pearl, and his next best is race four, number 10, Mack the Knife. He's quaddie, 2, 4, 7, and 10, first leg. 2, 6, 7, and 9, second leg. Third leg, 2, 3, 4, and 13. And in leg number four, 1, 4, 5, and 9. Luke Overnessing thinks the great tip-off, likes a couple at Hawkesbury. Race one, number one, Angel Hair. And race seven, number three, Dancers, with hooves, so 1173 at Northern Matty, France. likes race two number three Luna Lass and race three number nine Divine Mirage so two three three nine we've got the trots at Swan Hill Darren Carroll thanks to the trots.com.au likes race one number one Aussie Jay Mack and Calexico race seven number nine and then at Ballarat a song of the heart race five number two is his best harness race in New South Wales it's the home of the carnival of cups where Australian music royalty meets quality harness racing action at Penrith race three number two Bev the goat race six number three rock and roll Dave and race seven number two looking good Margie the tips there from Amanda Rando at Penrith you can check out racingqueensland.com.au for where Queensland is racing today Q1 Lakeside and Q Straight for Mitchie Abaya. Mitchie hello to you. Hello Jay man a lovely
Speaker 17day in Melbourne town.
Speaker 2Yes where do we start with your plays mate?
Speaker 17I need to bounce back well the best bets have been winning which has been fantastic but everything else around has been just average so Q Straight race four number two aces up here this dog I've tipped it a couple of times in the program and I think it's been good because it's won both of those now um around 420 it is a bit of a dog chaser but it's a fast dog it'll be up on speed and you can back it each way so I really like race four number two aces up here gets to a good draw I think that's what really counts here race six number two Brownlow um this back to Q Straight hasn't seen it for a little while but does have a really good record up the straight it uh form around Q1 and Q or your Q1 Lakeside's been okay it has been leading it strikes a couple of good ones I'll turn to Beach and Cyclone Tim but when you have 13 starts at a track for five wins three minor placings and your PB's 1888 uh I think you're going to be really well suited here so five dollars two bucks the drum they're the two at Q Straight. Just repeat those numbers? Race four number two and race six number two yeah 4262.
Speaker 2Beautiful and then what about it the um Q1 Lakeside?
Speaker 17Yeah Lakeside race one number one Back Creek Butch look uh it looks a race in two this dog's a very fast animal I think it should be leading if it doesn't lead it can still win coming off speed this is heat one of the derby um Zazu's journey sorry is the main danger now uh it's a Kiwi type it's been good at the track but I think this dog should lead and be really hard to beat. On the programs race two number four Robo I think it gets a couple of cracks at a way to win no speed in three one and two both desperate for the fence and as we know at Q1 there's a bit of a run into the first turn and boxes one and two can often lose a bit of ground darting to the rail so race two number four I'm really keen on in Robo and then we are all the way in race 11 number seven Grimersy Gary even money looks a real uh class drop here and because of the scratching of the race one number one race two number four as the best and race 11 number seven Grimersy Gary beautiful
Speaker 2race one number one race two number four race 11 number seven and then race four number two race six number two for the straight meeting at the Q park lens track today and what about um for the million dollar chase who do you like there Mitch
Speaker 17yeah can you make him I'm really keen on can you make him I've got it uh I've got it up on the social medias uh with another mob as you'll know there's a couple I like on the program I reckon can you make him absolutely beautifully drawn uh handles pressure looks uh to be really well boxed as well I like race nine number one Vista weird on the program the ex-victorian trained by uh Jace McKay I reckon it's going to be awfully hard to beat around the 340 mark and then I had a value play uh race seven number two Sin City Bandit so uh that was over the distance that is in the Sydney Cup final so great racing when he parked Friday we've got plenty of good racing coming up Jay it's uh all starting to warm up I'm going to
Speaker 2wrap up with the dishes yes I'm looking forward to it before you know it I don't know what's happening now I'm doing the coverage on seven I think racing.com tomorrow night for the final meeting at Wentworth Park so I'm looking for who do I
Speaker 17speak to who do I speak to to put a word in so you can come back and host and we can get uh the big dog back
Speaker 2yeah I don't know mate I love to I'll just come and I'll come and see you man I prefer watching it on TV um yeah and um yeah it would be a bit of fun anyway so you go and get them tonight so I'm looking forward to listening
Speaker 17thanks for that mate anytime mate I want with Paulie Sebastiani as
Speaker 2well so don't worry no you'll go and get another coffee you'll get a coffee at his favorite coffee place um I know I know
Speaker 17does he like the cup does he like the coffee there more or the people serving it I think
Speaker 2he's found love to tear the truth he's found love oh that's very
Speaker 17hard that's very hard for
Speaker 2the great man Sebastian I'll tell you right now you know that you're like a girl when you keep going to the coffee place to have 10 coffees a day you spoke for that one you're talking about so much thank you Mitch cheers guys have a good day check out racingqueensland.com.au for where Queensland is racing today Georgie for you
Speaker 18hello to you good thank
Speaker 2you brother Q1 Lakeside and then Sandown take it away yeah
Speaker 18look four heats in the Derby four heats of the maturity so they've swapped over usually we have Q2 but that's on a Saturday night race eight number eight hello Elsa uh she's a gun over the Q1 she's got a terrific record can handle wide draws and we think she'll be hard to beat number four who's they're not part of the the futurity of Derby heats but race 11 number four cash Cruz it was a really good winner last start it's one of those greyhounds that brings a class factor in the race and I think you can offset the box draw here and be hard to beat race 11 number four so that's at Q1 Lakeside of course we've got um a number of Melbourne Cup preludes so it's really starting to heat up that's at stand down tonight there's a couple that I like race six number seven the New Zealander it's hard to tip against this dog Gareth I mean he's just done everything right since he's got here he shows really good early speed there's a couple of dogs with some early speed in the race but it's not absolutely jam-packed with greyhounds who can get to the mark as quick as it can and I think that's okay from the wide drawer I reckon it'll just get a nice sit outside and be hard to beat race six number seven the other one I'm just a little bit of an upset I'm going against one of my favorites in Conzigliere who's about a dollar but I think flying Ducati has just raced so well there at Sandown more recently the set ledger winner I think he'll be uh one to beat race 11 number six at Sandown Park so good meeting there tonight there's a race in race three Gareth tonight where House of Sins who's won seven on the fly for Anthony at the party takes on Mapunga Phantom from Jeff Britain's Kindle that is an unbelievable battle between two very very fast 600 meter greyhounds if you had a look at the market for the fume cup I would suggest that both of them would be in the top five in bedding so we get a little bit of a snapshot uh in regards to those two greyhounds going head-to-head tonight at Sandown Park so there's a lot to look forward to tonight brother
Speaker 2are you with Fanta or House of Sins
Speaker 18yeah I I I'm a huge House of Sins fan and I I know it's probably not as drawn as well as what Mapunga Phantom is but it's just racing with such confidence at the moment I think Anthony has a party wants to push it over 700 meters eventually but with the Hume Cup about two or three weeks away over 600 meters and it's worth a hell of a lot of money at the Meadows I think he's just keeping his powder dry for for that race and then we'll see him over 700 meters he's a star that dog watch out for him he he could make it eight on the fly tonight
Speaker 2good on you mate thanks for that talk soon that is bag of tips and that was Georgie Farooj all thanks to bet365 the Ultima hotel and all's equipment rentals time for a break Tassie time next here on join the conversation
Speaker 1text us on oh four double nine seven three six seven three six live across Australia this is giddy up with Gareth Hall welcome back to
Speaker 2giddy up it is time for Tassie time Matty Reid joins us G'day Matty the connection runs deeper of course Tassie the perfect place to race the carnival's just around the corner and what a night it is on Friday night there at Launceston
Speaker 19yeah definitely the the best of the the night meeting so far since we kicked off in in the middle of September G yeah as you say five weeks until the the new market in the three-year-old cup and uh an increase in prize money for Launceston Knights from this Friday through to the rest of the season so that's maybe bought a few of them out of hibernation but some really good races on that program the open handicap again we get to see glory mission going for three wins in a row tackling zany girl there wasn't much in them last time I think they're both potentially uh heading towards a new market and some really strong support races through that program as well and I think throughout the ninth season so far G we've seen a lot of the winners they're gonna potentially make a name for themselves through the summer which is uh great at this time of year have you got a special for us Friday night uh there's a couple I will be backing at each way odds G race four number 11 copper rain uh he's a horse that wasn't up to aristopolis as a two-year-old but none of them were and then her first run as a three-year-old she drew wide she she got back there and um I thought it was just a bit of a fitness run as much as anything she's got the pole draw from the 1100 tomorrow night which is a bit of a key from that starting point and I think she gets a big opportunity to improve and in the last race uh I'll give you one at any old price halen uh gets out to 1400 senior rider going on good record at the track and distance I think you're shopping 30 plus about it so maybe we could blast out in the last if needed
Speaker 2G so you've got um halen is race 8 number 10 and then race 4 number 9 is one of was their hot moment. That'll do us nicely. Hopefully it's a fill-up.
Speaker 19Race four, number 11, Copper Raid. Oh, sorry, sorry, Copper Raid.
Speaker 2Sorry, sorry. I've got to get that right.
Speaker 19And, yeah, race eight, number 10, Halen. Yes. Had a couple there.
Speaker 2So race four, number 11, race eight, number 10. What else have I got for you today? G-Swift Force was, I thought she was home there yesterday at Caulfield, the Tassie mare for Team Keys and Brunton.
Speaker 19Yeah, she went really good again, didn't she? I mean, she's a nice horse. She's probably just her own worst enemy at this stage of his career. She gets a little bit keen and probably overdoes things. And the three times that she's been to Caulfield, she's struck a track where you sort of by the time she raced, you didn't want to be anywhere near the inside, which for a horse that's going to be up on the bunny, it's probably not ideal. But, yeah, look, she'll probably, whether she stays over there, I'm not sure. But I think she'll make her presence felt down here at some point during the summer. And the team have got Cartoon Graveyard in on Saturday, which probably looks a tough race for him under those conditions. But I think they're eventually hoping to get to a Cranbourne Cup with him next summer. And, of course, the superstar Gigi's Mistruth comes a long, long way back in grade and probably looks at a race to get another overdue victory in the Olingi there. But, yeah, we had a bit of our Carnival Form was on show yesterday there. So, yeah, finished second in the Hobart Cup and John Itch was midfield in the Tassie Derby back in the summer and they both struck a blow.
Speaker 2What about in the trots? We go to Hobart Friday night. You've got the group two for the two-year-olds there, the Tassbred two-year-olds.
Speaker 19Yeah, the Tassbred two-year-olds sort of getting their time in the sun over the next couple of weeks. Two heats of the Avicus and the Dandy patch. I thought better than ready. He's probably the standout across those four heats. He's won three or four and been really impressive in doing so. He's got the pole draw there. So, obviously, just a matter of qualifying for those finals which are in a fortnight on a Saturday night program in Hobart. So, always good to get that time slot where we can and looking forward to seeing what looks to be a pretty good batch of two-year-olds. We've got probably some good numbers there across the two-year-old ranks as well, which is great to see.
Speaker 2Posty Troy wants to know, Matty, what's the best pub to watch the races in Hobart?
Speaker 19There's a few decent pub tabs. The Marquis is pretty good. It's a good pub. It's sort of in West Hobart. The Queen's Head down in Sandy Bay is a good one too. And if you're in Salamanca, the Pavilion is good too. So, a few bases covered there. And I'll take a free schooner from any of those three establishments and giving them a play.
Speaker 2Yeah, 100%. Well done, mate. Maybe you can take Posty Troy there as well when he goes to Tassie. Good on you, Snapper. Thanks, Jay. There's Matty Reid there. Always great to catch up with the Hall of Fame when it comes to Tassie Racing and Steven Masculine. He was a superstar jockey. But, boy, he's doing some job mentoring the young jocks in Tasmania. And he's got a couple of graduates out of Tassie that are doing that state proud. And I speak of James Johnston, who will compete in his first Caulfield Cup on Saturday, and Jackson Radley, who's been in terrific form, of course, as the apprentice there to Lindsay Park. And Steven joins us now here on Giddy Up. Good morning, Steven. Thanks for your time, mate. Geez, you must be proud of those two boys. As I say hello to you.
Speaker 20Yeah. Good morning. No, very proud. Very proud. I think everyone in Tasmania that's a racing enthusiast is watching every ride that they both have. And we're very proud of both of them. I mean, only a couple of weeks ago where Jackson nearly got third, he got fourth in the Group 1 Epson. Like, that was a massive thrill for him and a thrill for everybody who's a part of him. And so, yeah, I've got a great thrill of watching him do that. And then you've got James, who won two, Group 3 races in the last fortnight. And he's got this wonderful opportunity to ride in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup. So it's very exciting.
Speaker 2And he's improved as well since he's been here. But Kieran Mahn's got so much faith in him. I was at a function the other day when James and Kieran were speaking and he says James is a man of few words which he likes, but he's got so much faith in this kid's ability.
Speaker 20Yeah, well, I mean, any sportsman, when they get to, to the level of, you know, of eliteness, as, you know, AFL or being a jockey is, you're with elite people around you. So you just keep growing with good company. And Kieran Mahn would be just outstanding. And all these, you know, people that's surrounded with Kieran Mahn, he would just get such good feedback from all of them. And even his talking's improved. Like, he's probably every day gets off a horse. He's probably talking half a dozen times, you know, with track gallops, etc. And so, yeah. His actual talking's improved out of sight just in the timeframe he's been with Kieran Mahn as well. So he's a very, very lucky boy. And, I mean, so, yeah. So things are very positive for him. So we're all going to watch his career very, very closely.
Speaker 2Did you always think that James and Jackson had that X factor about them?
Speaker 20Yeah, I did. Because when they're in the, where we teach them that, they just, they were just hung. They were hungry and they were driven. And then when we take them into the, where we go to the stewards' room to analyse all the races, and we just, you know, I might say one day, well, Jackson, you're going to get a whack today. It's your turn. You've made a couple of mistakes. And, you know, we have a pretty friendly like that. And he was good and copped it. And he was always great at giving feedback back to all the other apprentices as well. And they all had a little bit of banter. And they were just, they were just, you could just see how Jackson and Jabez were just, you know, really, I don't know, they were just so hungry all the time for information, you know, their knowledge, you know.
Speaker 2And you must be proud with the program that you got, because it's not just those two young boys that we're having a chat about. You've got apprentices that are doing excellent in Adelaide, and they seem to be well grounded. That experience that you're doing something right there in Tasmania, to give them a platform to really become successful, and not just successful apprentices, but also when they get out of their time.
Speaker 20Yeah, I mean, it's been proven, you know, time and time again, is a great formula, great nursery. I mean, if, you know, the list goes on, I can say like Raquel Clark, Taylor Johnson, Ziggy Carr, Tegan Borum in South Australia. Then you go Victoria, you go Luke Curry, Craig Newart, Jason Maskew. I mean, Daniel Gant in New South Wales. I mean, Glenn Smith when he went to Western Australia. And then you've got Jackson, Radley, James Johnson. And then our locals, like you've got Brendan McCool, Erica, Cody Jordan, Kelvin Sands, and Dave Perez have gone. And then if you want to go jumps riders, well, we've had Adam Trender and Treadwells. They're excellent touring jumps riders. We've just gone on and on and on of being a great nursery for their career, to be honest. So it's, I mean, the reason why it is a good formula is because, they can ride 80 country winners and still have a full claim when they go to a metropolitan. So they get all this wealth of riding experience underneath them. And then if they've got enough ability and their standards at a good level, well, then they've got the chance to move away from Tasmania and go to South Australia, Queensland, et cetera. And then if they're to the highest level, well, then they get to go to Victoria or New South Wales. So, you know, they've got, yeah, so it's a great formula in Tasmania.
Speaker 2I reckon there's a case that for other states as well, that they should send their apprentices to Tasmania because of the opportunities they would get compared to, say, back home in their home states. And then once they do, a bit like what they do in Hong Kong, I know it's a different ball game in a way, but they can go and learn in Tassie under you. And they've seen the results that you've been able to do with these jockeys that we've talked about. And then they can kick on in Victoria or New South Wales or Queensland, all South Australia.
Speaker 20Yeah, there's no doubt about that. And, I mean, what's been excellent in the last five or six years is the NARS series where the national apprentices have a competition every year. And, I mean, we've become runner-up two years ago. Then we won the competition last year. We beat all the other states. And so that was good recognition. But I think it's everyone starting to realise with Jackson and James flying the flag, it's great marketing for Tasmania. It's starting to, everyone's starting to realise what a great, you know, that it is a good place to actually let them start here. And then they can always, you know, the carrot's there if they're good enough to then leave Tasmania if they get to a good enough standard to go to other places and still have this, you know, this great value of claim, you know?
Speaker 2Yeah. Nah, well done, mate. You should be proud with everything you've been able to achieve with your young riders. And then not only are you kicking goals there, but you've got perspiration. It could be a horse that might be heading to the Tassie. New market in November for Johnny Keys.
Speaker 20Yeah, no, it's true. That's true. It gives me something to do in the mornings to ride a couple of horses in the morning. I do, and I enjoy it. Plus, it keeps me fit. And so I think it's great. But perspiration's come from Kieran Mars, and he's a nice horse. And so, yeah, he's going to go to the new market. He's probably going to have six other good sprinters that surround in Tasmania. So it won't be easy, but he's a lovely horse, and fingers crossed.
Speaker 2All right, mate. Well, thanks for coming on Giddy Up. Um, you did it all on the track there in Tassie as a hall of fame jockey, but mate, you're a hall of fame coach at the moment. Um, so yeah, congratulations with the job that you're doing for Tassie. And I'm pretty sure that you might have a few other, um, young aspiring jocks knocking on your door to see if you can train them.
Speaker 20Yeah. Well, they're smart enough.
Speaker 2They will get on your Steve.
Speaker 20Thanks mate. Thank you.
Speaker 2Steve Maskell, the Tasmanian apprentice jockey coach, and he is doing some job, um, making these jockeys into the stars that they are today. 1146. We'll take a break. We'll come back and we'll wrap up giddy up. I think we've got a very special guest coming your way next.
Speaker 1Text us on 0499 736 736 live across Australia.
Speaker 2Welcome back to giddy up Gareth Hall with you all. Thanks to bet three, six, five. I'm really looking forward to our next guest. She is a legend and inspiration in, uh, Dame Katrina Williams, who is a lady that's well known in the bloodstock industry. Obviously Sam Williams, her husband, um, and Katrina run little Avondale stud, the home of Per and Canto in New Zealand. But, um, Dame Katrina is also behind, um, uh, this wonderful cause called catwalk, which is a, um, which is an organization that helps raise awareness for spinal injuries. And it's dedicated to advancing the understanding and treatment of spinal cord injuries. Now, Dame Katrina was a superstar equestrian rider, um, and represented in New Zealand until in 2002, um, she fell off a horse and, um, obviously had some spinal injuries that have, um, had her wheelchair bound. Ever since 2002. Um, but then she's been able to, um, put together catwalk and in doing that has inspired a lot of people, um, that have had spinal injuries and also raised a lot, a lot of money, um, to help with the research and also try and do, um, medley metal, uh, medical experience experiments to try and, um, get a cure for these spinal cord injuries. And, um, Jimmy Starr, who's the horse that they bred, of course, the son of Perrin Cano, and they still got a share in this horse along with Aussie Care and his connections, will be representing, um, catwalk in a way comes Saturday in this year's Everest. And I think we have, um, Dame Katrina with us now and she joins us. She's about to join us in just a moment to have a chat about, um, what is happening on Saturday, because I think there's a percentage of the prize money, um, that pride, uh, that Jimmy Starr wins there on Saturday in the Everest that will be donated to, um, Team Connect USA, which is a fundraiser, um, basically for catwalk and spinal cord injuries. So it's a wonderful cause. And, uh, Dame Katrina joins us now here on, uh, Giddy Up. Dame Katrina, thanks very much for joining us here on Giddy Up.
Speaker 21Hi, Gareth. Um,
Speaker 2we're pretty excited about the weekend. Yeah, it is bloody exciting. Well, I just told a little bit about your story. Many people know about it, but, um, Jimmy Starr is a special horse to you and your family.
Speaker 21Jimmy has been an absolute rock star, you know, right from the beginning. Uh, he was born, I was talking to Sam today and said, you know, what was he like as a, as a little foal? He said he was a ball of muscle. Uh, he, he never really grew, um, but he did have a couple of x-ray issues and that's why he never got to the sales ring. But thanks. Thanks to Chris and Pete RG co-breeders along with us, uh, we sent him to, uh, Hawke's Bay to, uh, Guy Lowry and Leah there to do some work. He was second in his first start, won his next two. And as they say, the rest is history. Imagine if he could be the next Kiwi to, to climb Everest, eh?
Speaker 2Yeah, it would be something else. And Ozzie Kerr, obviously he purchased this horse off you guys. And then obviously you've kept a share, um, but he's racing for so much more than just Victor and the Everest on Saturday day. Tell me Dame Katrina.
Speaker 21That that's so right. So he's in the TAB slot and part of the negotiations that Ozzie, uh, did on our behalf was that 2.5% of all gross proceeds will go to team connect USA and team connect USA is basically a hand soccer ride from the west coast of the States to the east. Beginning, uh, 30th of December, uh, we'll be away three months and we have a great team around us. It's actually led by two Australians, uh, Julie McDonald and Ginny Warby and my co-captains. And I've got a lovely American girl, Lib Ritterford, who is handling all the PR. So it really is a global team. Uh, but we're hoping to raise millions literally, and some prize money from the Everest, uh, would be, uh, a great part of the whole package actually. And whether he wins or whether he comes last, there's still going to be something in the tank, but oh my goodness. You know, he's a champion already. So top three, that's what we're aiming for.
Speaker 2Yeah, I think he gets 700,000 if he even runs last. So it's a wonderful, um, it's wonderful for Mozzie and you guys and the TAB to come together for such a cause that's close to your heart, your work that you've done with catwalk, with the research to, um, try and work out how you can improve life after these serious spinal cord injuries. And you can get people to walk again, hopefully, um, Dave. And Katrina and in your heart of hearts, do you think you're far off of finding the answers
Speaker 21there? Well, this is actually, this is absolutely the heart of it, Gareth. I've got three tetra friends that are walking and they were told they never would. You know what? One's Maya Vance. She's a trainer here in New Zealand. Another is a friend that used to sail on Prada for the America's Cup. And another girl, lovely Ana Mia, who has been through a lot of training over in Brisbane. So. It's absolutely possible. Uh, some of us need a little bit more help, but we also need to make it happen quicker. So this is a global challenge that we actually can solve in our generation. Yeah. And you know, the reality is if we were putting the money into this, that we're putting man on the moon, we'd have it solved. So I can only thank the thoroughbred industry who have been the backbone, literally of catwalk and this little project, a little shout out to Ron and Judy Wanlis, one of our backbone guys. And there's been so many people get behind us. So, uh, thank you to everybody and, uh, have a little check out on team connect usa.org. Yes. A little bit more detailed there.
Speaker 2And we can donate pretty easily. It's all about Saturday.
Speaker 21Yeah. Yes, you can. And lots of ways to donate there and reach out if you want to.
Speaker 2And we've seen Tommy Prebble who, um, obviously he had a serious spinal injury, um, more than a year ago now, but just seeing his development and the way that he's going about it is bloody inspiring as well. Um, Dame can train the work that you've done. Um, so yeah, I think it's, it's a situation that you, as you just point out that we can obviously make a big difference if we can, um, spend a little money and, and, and try and work out a cure for this.
Speaker 21Yeah. There's, there's, um, there's no quack facts, but what we do know is that by doing nothing, you achieve nothing. Right. Yeah. And we've got the brightest minds working on this at the moment. We work very hard. We work very closely with Perry Cross Spinal Cure Australia, the Christopher Reeve Foundation, all of these groups around the world, and we all want the same results. So the more that we can put into it, the more that we can back it, uh, then we won't have people like us still in a chair at 25 years. Yeah. So you don't find couch potatoes in a wheelchair and, uh, it, it shouldn't mean life in a chair. Not everyone's as lucky as me to be, you know, married to someone like Sam and, and have beautiful family and friends. It's a changing lives for others.
Speaker 2You're a bloody legend, Dame Katrina. You go and get him with Jimmy Star. Um, it'll be a big roar for the big chestnut, flashes down the outside and goes past Kying Rising. Um, he might get the conditions to suit.
Speaker 21He's hoping that's true. We certainly, we certainly
Speaker 2know we're up against it.
Speaker 21He's, that Kying Rising is one hell of a horse, but, um, Jimmy on his day, we've got Jolie Star over coming from New Zealand, another New Zealand horse as well. New Zealand owners. So, uh, and tempted, of course, from the same stable, but, uh, look, we're all there for a fun day and, uh, may the best horse win.
Speaker 2So g'day to Sam. We'll see you on Everest Day, but well done to Ozzy in the tab for doing this as well. And Team Connect USA, go to the website and donate and good luck with the, with the ride as well. Um, Dame Katrina. Thanks for joining us here on Giddy Up. Much appreciated and go Jimmy.
Speaker 21Thanks so much, Gary. See you, see you Saturday.
Speaker 2Bye. Yep. So that is, of course, um, a small percentage of the prize money might be two and a half percent. I think it is donated, um, to Team Connect USA. So if they win at 7 million, so work that out. Um, thanks for your company on Giddy Up. It's been a big show. I'll catch you again tomorrow morning from eight o'clock. Have a wonderful day.
