Speaker 2with gareth hall yes good morning it is giddy up with gareth hall on this tuesday it's the 15th of september it's a big hello to you listening on your local scn track and rsn 927 dials wherever you may be listening on the scn and rsn apps of course if you're watching us a little later on on the podcast it's great to have your company and of course watching us on racing.com what a show we have for you this morning it doesn't get any better really we'll be catching up with the champion trainer chris waller to kick off proceedings he was at track work today at caulfield um so looking forward to catching up with chris the history maker in saffy osborne will be joining us live from newmarket this morning obviously saffy created history there on saturday in the uk by becoming the first female jockey to win a classic in england and she did it in a big way as well winning the 250th running of the english saint ledger and that was her first group one on highwayman for joseph o'brien and it could be one of several horses coming up for the melbourne cup for joseph o'brien so we'll have a chat to saffy looking forward to that adam blanco from racing and sports.com the respected ratings man in the game of thoroughbred racing will be joining us live from canberra um so looking forward to dissecting what happened there on the weekend with his ratings and also looking forward to this weekend we're going to catch up with harness racing victoria's ceo matt isaacs as well henry plumtree from cambridge stub will join us it was a good weekend in fact it's been a really good month for cambridge stud so looking forward to catching up with henry breeding and bloodstock with guy moldcaster bella youngberry the superstar young rider from brisbane will have a chat to us we'll find you some winners tomorrow with the midweek masterclass team looking at durban caulfield clava canterbury launceston and belmont and then we'll find you some winners today with bag of tips two minutes past date you can join my conversation our conversation here anytime you want on a giddy up um by on the garrison hound text line oh four double nine seven three six seven three six that's oh four double nine seven three six seven three six and don't forget this saturday it's caulfield underwood stakes day um group one racing at its best and the afl finals will be played at the end of the week so we'll see you there and i'll see you there and i'll see you as well so um terrific day to get out there at caulfield on am saturday afternoon to watch the afl finals and of course watch some group one racing that underwood stakes is going to be a really good race and of course the sarupa clark stakes it's one of the best sarupa clark stakes i reckon we've seen for quite some time um and those fields will be out there tomorrow but as i said a few of the stars were working at caulfield this morning so chris waller isn't far away um saffy osborne as i said she will join us she was a terrific race and she's going to be a terrific story wasn't she saffy uh every time i've watched social media there over the last 48 hours saffy keeps popping up um she's had several interviews over the last couple of days but she's a terrific ambassador for the game um she's got this wonderful attitude when it comes to the the sport of thoroughbred racing and being a jockey i i didn't really know that she had a choice when she was growing up either to go down the eventing path or be a jockey she could have participated at the olympics she was that good in that field but she decided to be a jockey obviously her father jamie osborne is a trainer in the uk and she was able to live her dream there on saturday by winning her first group one in that english saint ledger so looking forward to catching up with saffy she she'll have to wait the weights come out i think today for the melbourne cup so um if highwayman gets what 54 and a half and under she'll keep the rider record in the melbourne cup aboard that galloper um if not she'll probably have to go and look for another ride but there's a chance that maybe joseph o'brien who could have six seven runners in a melbourne cup would give her an opportunity and she'll be definitely in australia to ride amazing journey who is a horse that was paid for or who was bought for big money there from kiramar and his team off jamie osborne and his connections um and that horse will be set for the golden eagle and it's around 20 odd dollars i think melbourne baywack and those type of horses lead the market um but yeah um be interesting to get her thoughts on amazing journey as well but looking forward to catching up with saffy and if you've got a question for adam blanco today on the garrett's horse and hound text line 0 4 double 9 7 3 6 7 3 6 let us know because he'll be joining us um after we have a chat to saffy osborne this morning and we'll dissect what happened there on the weekend the macaibi diva stakes meeting and also what happened there at rose hill with adam blanco and i'll see you in the next one bye bye so um we'll have plenty of time for your questions 0 4 double 9 7 3 6 7 3 6 but it's five minutes past eight to kick off the show now here on giddy up it's always great to catch up with the champion trainer chris waller who's been in melbourne um this morning watching his horses gallop there at caulfield and he joins us now thanks for your time chris my pleasure gareth um how was caulfield this morning it looked like it was it was a beautiful day in melbourne town yeah fresh fresh start but
Speaker 3it's a beautiful day and the other track was perfect and we're going to have a look at the race this morning and uh horses went about their work in the right way and everyone's happy how
Speaker 2many runners will you have in an underwood stakes on saturday oh i'm not sure um a few few little
Speaker 3things to weigh up a couple of them will be entered for um sydney and melbourne which would be aliana and lindemann both both entered for both places so those two sort of undecided but will have the likes of birdman and
Speaker 2buckaroo and um there so uh we'll be well represented so take us inside the inner sanctum then when it comes to deciding where you go with a horse like a lindemann because um it looks like you'd be a great chance on the map i don't think there's too much pressure looking at the nominations at caulfield and underwood stakes um but then there's only five or six and he probably won't beat autumn autumn glow but um he's a chance to run into some good prize money there in sydney
Speaker 3as well yeah that's about how i see it as well as much as we love winning group ones uh we're well represented in both races so i've got to put the owner's cap on and say well where were they where are they where do they want to go and where are they going to get the best prize money so hence the reason for i think weighing up both options kenny kenny run um the top two in sydney or kenny run top two in melbourne so once the fields come out that sort of um um
Speaker 2I guess for owners and trainers and we discussed this on the means test with johnny o'neill and wayne hawks like um racing in melbourne and sydney is in a good place when you get that opportunity to choose where you want to go for the best possible prize money to suit your horse
Speaker 3in a way well you're talking like two hundred thousand for running second um and then the million dollar race like you just saw two hundred thousand pulling up at the end of the room you'd know it was there and um well we would chris don't worry i've got i've got shares in horses too and if i've got a half share in a horse you can really it's a big deal if that money comes in so yeah yeah that's what it comes down to and i fully respect punters and they want to they want to know as early as they can but we're trying to try and look after the punter as well as the owner
Speaker 2yeah um linderman jeez he was really good second up anyway yeah after his first up effort that's just that's just him in a way yeah for sure
Speaker 3no he was gifted the race um last start with a soft soft time in front so that was a good way to say hey you're on your way back and there's a bit of confidence for you but it'll be up to him now yeah um especially in underwood he won't be gifted that same lead and and likewise if he was to run and run in sydney um he'd have more than go breathing down his neck pretty quickly if that was the case so there's a good way to get his confidence back um and um yep and it that does
Speaker 2help horses bounce back into their best form easy decision to scratch buckaroo and birdman there last
Speaker 3week and save them for the underwood stakes yeah it was it was hard at the time with scratching from the good draw but hindsight hindsight proved to be right and um yeah so they've they've dodged a bullet last week against she's alibi she was brilliant wasn't she yeah she was great what did you make of her oh awesome yeah really good yeah yeah she's she's seriously awesome that was great to see um probably fit her second up and um pete's done a great job with her and yeah she's just going to be i don't i don't want him to look after her too much because she's going to be around for a lot longer yet if he does i reckon it was pretty cool
Speaker 2it was i don't know if you heard that interview on channel 7 with pete moody yeah i was taken by it i
Speaker 3really was um it meant a lot to me little things like that do touch do touch it so you ought to
Speaker 2blame these only giving her one more run this spring chris so she'll go the golden eagle and i reckon hopefully like autumn glow how many more seasons will she race for oh it's hard to tell
Speaker 3like she's owned by breeders and um they're always a little more conscious than just the genuine race goers so um like they'll be thinking of a grading career as well. Whereas you and I, we just push on and just keep marching on. But, yeah, so a little bit of respect will be given towards that, I'm sure. So her form would ultimately tell. But, gee, the prize money in Australia is so good, it's hard to stop a good horse racing if they're in their peak.
Speaker 2Yeah. I was reading an article there the other day, and you said, I haven't had that feeling for a while. You were quoted in the press. That was Autumn Glow working there. Yeah. On Saturday. Yeah. Just explain that a little bit more to us, please.
Speaker 3Oh, you just get that sense, the feel, not looking at stopwatches or anything. But there's certain things, like I was down by the rail, and you see them come. So they did set thunder past, like they shake the ground when they go past you. If that's not enough to get you tingling, then the speed that she runs certainly is. So, yeah, it's quite a – I love watching the races. I watched Flitwick. I love watching the races down in the mounting yard right by the winning post normally and get a feel for the horse and their breathing and even when they're galloping. So I just got that feeling that you very rarely get to that level that I got on Saturday.
Speaker 2Do you get that opportunity much to watch your horses? Obviously, track galloping at the races, you get to do that, but you'd have so many horses that you would have to watch there at Rose Hill and when you come to Flemington. So do you get that opportunity? Do you get that opportunity to see them close up like that?
Speaker 3Not really, no. Well, this morning at Caulfield, it was good. We took six horses there, and I got to watch all six of them. But if I had stayed home at Rose Hill this morning, you're basically looking through the binoculars in the dark, and they're about 300 or 200 metres away from where I watch them. So, no, you don't get that same feel as you do when you're up close and personal.
Speaker 2Yeah. Can't wait to see her in the Seven Stakes Autumn Glow, and then we'll get to see her at Flemington, hopefully. In Melbourne.
Speaker 3Yeah, I would say so. Yeah, after the King Charles. Yeah, one race at a time. It's a long sprint, but that's the plan. Yeah, so the owners are keen to get her down here and so on.
Speaker 2Lady Shannon Dale, she is well-weighted, I reckon, in a Sir Rupert Clark Stakes.
Speaker 3Yeah. Yeah, well, that's sort of an invitation. I just want to see her draw well. She galloped left-handed this morning at Rose Hill in preparation for a trip on Wednesday night. So we'll have a good look at the barrier draws. I think you've only seen her once in Melbourne and she was a little bit unlucky in the Manicato. She drew wide, never really got into the race from that point, but she could easily bounce back left-handed if she drew a gate.
Speaker 2I was also reading there on the weekend that you were surprised, I don't know if you were surprised, but how popular Aliana is. And she was the once, I think she's second favourite still for the Melbourne Cup. She has got a big following, hasn't she, Aliana?
Speaker 3Yeah, and it just shows you what weight the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups have because I guess that's where a lot of it's coming from. Obviously, she's a Derby winner and she's won her last, well, prior to the first up run, she'd won her last two at Group 1 companies. So, yeah, we've got a lot of requests to see how she's going and the feedback's been good and hopefully we can see her bounce back on Saturday. Yet to decide whether it's an Underwood or in Sydney in the Seven Stakes, if she drew wide in the Underwood, I'd be leaning towards Sydney.
Speaker 2Okay, and then you'll come to Melbourne for a Turnbull and then a Cox Plate Melbourne Cup. Is that still the plan?
Speaker 3Yep, yep. We sort of always sit the Cox Plate and then on to a Melbourne Cup. That's still the plan. Yeah.
Speaker 2Angel Capital, is he ready to go to try and win this Group 1?
Speaker 3Well, everything's good at home. He looks well. I think he'll appreciate it. The likely conditions on Saturday, which will be a better track, first up, well, not first up, and then maybe he struck a softish track, which I don't think he's as comfortable on. So, back on a good deck, as we say, on Saturday and hopefully a good draw. He could bounce back. He was very unlucky in the race last year.
Speaker 2Yulong probably got a couple of chances or horses they're looking for for their slot in the Everest. It's Angel Capital and Paradoxium who won down the straight. They're at Flemington on Saturday. Could you make a good case for Angel Capital for the Everest when you're talking to the Yulong team?
Speaker 3Yeah, if he was to bounce and win on Saturday, for sure. Yeah, he'd love to. Well, he ran well in their slow run in the Everest last year.
Speaker 4Yeah.
Speaker 3He got home really well. So, he's pretty versatile, 1,200 to 1,400, as long as there's speed on.
Speaker 2A lot of our listeners continue to ask me every day, Chris, in WA, of course, as we go through WA on SEN Turf. How's Joker's grin going? And we get to see him finally, I think, at the races on Saturday.
Speaker 3He's going along okay, but it's probably a little bit premature. He's actually got a bit of a setback this morning.
Speaker 2Oh, okay.
Speaker 3I've only just put a message through the owners, and they're probably waking up to it now. So, don't try and make a big deal of it. But I'm telling you the truth. He's just had a minor setback with a temp, which will normally bounce around pretty quick. But, yeah. I realize the listeners will be listening in, but try not to spoil the owners. Let the owners hear from me first. But that's the story. Yeah, slight temp this morning. We can normally turn them around in five or six days. We saw Baywalk had one in the seven days. He was winning a group one race in the fashion that he did. So, it's just something that we deal with head on and be honest about it and get them to turn around quick. But that was the biggest disappointment of my day. Yeah. 4:30 this morning, seeing that flash up on my computer screen from Sydney. And because he's dead set flying.
Speaker 2Yeah. Bloody horses, Chris.
Speaker 3Yeah, he'll miss Saturday, but hopefully we've got him back next week.
Speaker 2All right, then. So, that's Jokers. Grinjolly Star, how is she?
Speaker 3She's terrific. Yeah. She's exactly where we needed to be. All boxes ticked. She's ready to run. Oh, she's fresh and ready. Ready to go.
Speaker 2Yeah. Is that your, just back to Jokers grin. Is that your greatest fear? I was listening to Aidan O'Brien during the week and he said he's had a really challenging season that they had a low grade virus that's gone through Billy Doyle. And, um, he's had to spell horses early and he just doesn't know sometimes until they go to the races, like, is that your greatest fear as a trainer?
Speaker 3Yeah, it is. Yeah. And, um, as I said, just dealing with it head on is the best way to deal with it. Um, some ways it's good if they get a temp early in the prep, because it's just like, I guess it's like COVID, um, if you get the virus and, um, you get over it quick, normally you're felt, you're immune to it the second time and, and they just fit back into the system. But as soon as they get a temp, I get them straight out and, um, take bloods, make sure the bloods are back to normal when the bloods are perfect, straight back in. If you could turn them around quick, like we did with Baywalk, you're, um, you don't miss a beat. If it's early in the season, but if it's the week leading into a race, there's, there's no way around it. They don't run up to their best. So it is a fear. Um, yeah. And that's, it's, it's why as a trainer, you just never really get to relax. You just, you just don't know what's around the corner and, um, you might be celebrating a massive day on Saturday and you just, you just never get too far ahead of yourself because you know, Monday mornings or Sunday mornings, just around the corner.
Speaker 2Yeah. Um, and it's like, how do you deal with it? How do you make sure that you, how do you make sure that, um, it doesn't spread to the stable? Obviously you've got good practices.
Speaker 3We isolate them. So it's going back to your COVID rules and, um, isolation is the key. Um, getting them out of the population, get them to the farm, get them to a paddock, uh, within 24 hours before they shed the virus. That's what works for us.
Speaker 4Yeah.
Speaker 3Um, so that's why it's so important to have accurate temperature taking. And, um, it's more so in the spring. The autumn, it's, it's a lot more relaxed, but it's, it's this time every year that there's always something bubbling.
Speaker 4Yeah.
Speaker 3Um, and it, and the severity of it's always different every year. This is this year, it's just a low grade virus and, um, most horses won't get it. Some horses will get it and they'll get over it very quickly.
Speaker 2Um, who's your number one seed for the golden rose?
Speaker 3Um, we've got a few there and, um, um, you can make a case for a few of them. Um, the likes of Tronville was terrific. First up, uh, um, sit in Gothard was brilliant. First up the other day, uh, central Europe's bubbling away nicely there. Um, I think 1,400 meters will really suit him. And, um, story Marco was very good. Uh, the likes of Campione D'Italia, he was a little bit disappointing first up his trial was a fast mark. He'll still go there. And then we're just starting to deflect with a few like hit tricks. He might come down to a stud stakes. Fireball might be the same. He might come down to Melbourne and, uh, they're the ones that I'm just reeling off the top of my head. Um, so yeah, I think those first ones would be out of those four Tronville, central Europe.
Speaker 4Yeah.
Speaker 3Uh, sitting Gothard and stormy Marco and comes down to barrier draws and who's best on the day.
Speaker 2I've got a couple more questions for you. I know. that you have to go. Johnny O'Neill was telling us there yesterday on the means test, he reckons Auden Boy can win a Cox Plate. And he was so good there in the Maccabi Diva. How difficult of a decision will this be whether he's only four once, but you've got She's Alibi in a race like a Golden Eagle in 2026. And then it's probably a really winnable Cox Plate this year.
Speaker 3Well, I guess both races are group ones now, so I can't use that argument for leaving the Golden Eagle anymore. Yeah, good question. We know he loves 2,000 metres. He's going to be a stallion, and the Cox Plate would be pretty good, but so would a Golden Eagle. So I guess there's a lot to unfold. He's going to go back to Sydney, probably run in the Epson, where we think he's well-weighted, and I think make a decision after that.
Speaker 2He's going to be hard to beat in the Epson. I thought, gee, I couldn't believe when I saw his weight. He is very well-weighted, isn't he?
Speaker 3Yeah, I guess he's in pretty well. Yeah. Yeah, you always like to see them have half a kilo less, or a kilo less, but yeah. A few more. It looks like it's a good horse, isn't it, with Horseman in Zealand, well-written. Yeah.
Speaker 2She's got, I think, 55. How many would you have in a Manicato?
Speaker 3Oh, I'm not sure yet. Bay Vark would be a definite, and then just Barrier Draws. Barrier Draws this week will tell us a bit more. Yeah.
Speaker 2Any in the Derby, the Victoria Derby, or will you go to the Spring Champion Stakes with your three horses?
Speaker 3We'll try and have something there, for sure. Sort of the ones we get to the Derby are more the latecomers, like Preferment was. Riff Rocket was a bit different. He'd already had runs on the board, but yeah, it's just to stay as you sort of put in your hand, runs up in the next few weeks would be the ones. Stormy Marco's probably a Spring Champion horse, whether he got to a Derby, I'm not sure.
Speaker 2Would you like to run a three-year-old in a Cox Plate this year? Because usually, apart from militarise, I can't recall too many three-year-olds that you would have put in a Cox Plate.
Speaker 3Yeah, I think it's a bit hard for them, but saying that, there's others that have done it. I think they just need that good grounding as two-year-olds. Don't they, if you try and do it in their three-year-old year, it's not going to be easy, but yeah, lots of options, lots of things to play out, and it depends who our top seeds are. Like if we've got a horse that's an old horse that's going to be hard to beat, I'd be less inclined to put a three-year-old in it, unless that three-year-old really needed it to make its resume, other than they look
Speaker 2after you. Well, we appreciate your time, Chris. You're giving us some ... some great time today, so we wish you the best of luck this weekend. I can't believe you're a Panthers supporter, not a New Zealand Warriors supporter. Gareth, I
Speaker 3mix and match my teams as it pleases, and I'm not afraid to say it. I'd love the teams that are going well. I love the underdogs coming through and following them, but yeah, I've got two teams, Warriors and Panthers at this stage. What's the best
Speaker 2book you're reading at the moment for us? What's inspiring you?
Speaker 3I can't even remember its name. It's something about a dream team, something about the skill of making a dream team or something like that. I'll text it to you, yeah. It's a bit boring, but it suits me for what I'm trying to do at the moment. It's about getting a good team together.
Speaker 2Well, you've got one hell of a dream team at the moment with your stable, so good luck, mate. Thanks for your time, and safe trip back to Sydney. Thanks, mate. There's the champion trainer, Chris Waller. It's 23 minutes past date. Who are we going to have next? Is it Safi Osborne? Adam Blenka will be joining us next, and then we'll have a chat to Safi Osborne.
Speaker 1Join the conversation. Text us on 04009 736 736. Live across Australia, this is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 2Welcome back to Giddy Up. Adam Blenka is not far away. Great to have your company on this Saturday. Good morning. The Caulfield Underwood Stakes meeting. This Saturday, Group 1 Racing and AFL Finals. Tickets are just $25 at Ticket Tech. Paulie Sebastiani joins me. Paulie, always great to catch up with Chris Waller. It's nearly impossible to get through everything that you need to have a chat to him about, and his time is precious, of course, but Lindemann and Eliana, I don't think they're... Big question marks whether they come to Melbourne or not.
Speaker 5Very good morning to you and everybody in the land of Giddy Up. I know Trent Mason-Alder did tweet that Blake Shin has been booked for Lindemann, but whether or not he comes down here, the map, as you suggested to Chris and off the top, looks reasonable for Lindemann if they come down to the Underwood, but as we know with Chris, as he mentioned, they'll make their decision closer to race day.
Speaker 2Autumn Boy is an interesting discussion to have. Is he a Cox Plate or is he a Golden Eagle horse? No decision just yet. Golden Eagle would be favourite, but geez, it's a good... I reckon the Cox Plate is right up his... his alley this time around. 2,000 metres. If he runs well, say, in an Epsom, and he's going to be hard to beat in an Epsom, like he's got 55 and a half and the Marewell Redden's got 55.
Speaker 5Just a good horse, isn't he? It's great to have that versatility with a horse like that and for a stable like him, and the way he loomed up into that Maccabi Deva Stakes and the way he finished off his race would suggest that he's going to be very, very strong up and over those middle distance trips, and that's what we know with Chris. Gareth, is that he loves those middle distance, wait for age, and handicap races. The mile to 2,000 metres, that is Chris Waller's sweet spot, and he's got an army again to tackle this spring with, and Johnny O'Neill rightly pointed out that Autumn Boy is a horse that's definitely going to take the stable moving forward, and we haven't quite reached the ceiling with that horse yet, which is great for Chris Waller and maybe for futures punters as well with our friends at Bet365, eh?
Speaker 2Yeah, I'll say just having a look at the Epsom here and the handicap, we've got, she's Alibi 350, she won't be going there. Autumn Boy, $4, well-written 450. Like, he's got a, under the weight-for-age scale, he's got a kilo and a half on well-written Autumn Boy, so and Attica at $10 has got no weight on his back and gets the blinkers on for Joe Pride. Mr Miller needs to get into the race, Eltoff as well, Skyhook 13, Charwool 15, I don't think goes down that path, Hedley Grange at 15, so I think Autumn Boy and even Attica at $10 might be a good play there for the Epsom. Plenty of text messages coming through here.
Speaker 5How about the lady, Lady Shenandoah this weekend? She's one of the big stable representatives coming into another big Group 1 weekend of racing. She's been a stalwart for the Waller stable, favourite for the Sir Rupert Clark. She'll need
Speaker 2to draw well, but this is a chance to win a Group 1 along with Angel Capital, like 1,400 metres. There's not too many Group 1 1,400 metre races around for horses like Angel Capital, and I think that Baywax is a perfect example of that. 1,200 metres, whether it's too short for him, whether he can get out and control the race like he does over 1,400 metres, we'll find that out in a Manicato on Saturday, but Angel Capital gets his opportunity to win a Group 1 on Saturday as well, so that Sir Rupert Clark's a beauty. Nice horses resuming there, like I can't wait to see Seppels back at the races. He was second in a Golden Eagle behind Autumn Glow last year, so it's a great race, and the Underwood, like if Lindemann doesn't go there, then, and I know Bob Peters doesn't like his horses to be ridden on speed, but it's a perfect opportunity for Pike and for Trav Noonan and for all of Cosmic Crusaders fans, for Pikey to get him to jump and then give him an opportunity on pace, because he could nearly take it up, I reckon, Cosmic Crusader, because you've got horses like Birdman and Buckaroo that won't be doing that. So, yeah. They'll have
Speaker 5to use his fitness edge over those horses who are slowly building into their preparation, and we know, last prep, what he was able to accomplish over that 1800 metre distance. It's almost his sweet spot, and the step up for him looks ideal. He's handled Corfwood really well. His run last start was sensational, and as you said, if he draws well with Pikey aboard, he's going to be very very hard to stop. Could settle in the ironic position of the 1-1.
Speaker 2And there is a chance Lindemann will go to a Cox plate this year, so he's at $6 in Underwood stakes, Cosmic Crusader, $3.20. Birdman, Buckaroo. Birdman can settle on pace, but he won't be leading Eliana. She won't lead. Kingswood won't lead. St. George is going to the Naturalism. Evaporate is to the PB Lawrence. And then there's horses like Peaback and Solcombe and those horses. So, yeah. There looks to be no pace whatsoever in an Underwood stake, so it will be interesting to see what path Chris Waller goes down with a horse like Lindemann for Saturday, whether they go to the seven stakes or they go to the Underwood stakes. Both races worth a million. One's a group two, one's a group one. Handy kick. Yeah. We're going to take a break. It's 8.31. On the other side of it, Adam Blinko from RacingAndSports.com will be joining us.
Speaker 1Join the conversation. Text us on 0499 736 736. Live across Australia. This is Giddy Up with with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 2Welcome back to Getty Up. Chris Waller just sent through the text message, The Science of Dream Teams. So that's Mike Sarni that's done that particular book, and you can obviously download it on Spotify as well. So The Science of Dream Teams, that's the book that Chris Waller is reading at the moment. I reckon Adam Blanco would be all over that book because of the dream team that he's established there at RacingAndSports.com, and he joins us now. G'day, Adam.
Speaker 6Gareth, how are you? Book recommendations from Chris Waller. There you go. I'm going to chase that up.
Speaker 2Yeah, you should, actually. I think he likes to read books. I think he loves his dynasties and learning from different coaches, and I find him a very intriguing and interesting man, Chris Waller. He's got this, like he treats his, like he is in a, he's competing in a sport, isn't he? So he treats his team like they're athletes, basically, and not just the equine athletes, but also the staff that work with the horses, trying to get the very best out of them. And he reads. He reads all of these books to try and give him an edge to make sure that he continues to be at the level that he is. So, yeah, he's a very interesting chap when you get to sit down with Chris Waller.
Speaker 6Yeah, no doubt. No, he's a smart man, and his record speaks for itself, really. I know he's got a lot of horses, and so people will sort of say, well, you know, he's got all the firepower, but it does take, I mean, you can look at stables with similar firepower around the world, and you can see that it's not as straightforward as just getting them in the door. You've got to actually, once they come in, you've got to produce with them, and I don't think that's any easy task, but he does it well.
Speaker 2It's the management, even like the one percentage that he touched on today, is that, like, Joker's Grin's got a virus, so we don't get to see him at the races. And so you've got to isolate him straight away so the virus doesn't spread throughout the stable, and you'd have all those practices down pat because it can be a complete and utter nightmare if a virus goes through a stable like Chris Waller's. And we've seen it a little bit, as I mentioned before, with Aidan O'Brien, he said that they've had a low-grade virus that's gone through Ballydoyle, and we haven't seen his horses compete at their very best, you could say, during the European summer. So there's so many different variables that we probably don't know about as punters. It's not as straightforward as we'd like it to be.
Speaker 6Very true, and some of them we probably should know a little bit more about if they're things like viruses that have been hanging around for three months in a stable that sends out a virus. Yeah, a virus that sends out multiple short-priced favourites in Group 1s, maybe that should be listed or out there or available information for some people. But that's a battleground for another day.
Speaker 2Yes. What about, what excited you most from the weekend?
Speaker 6You'd probably have to, I wish that it was the three-year-olds, Gareth. I wish that it was, but it probably wasn't. It was probably the default answer back to the Maccabi Diva and not just she's an alibi, who is obviously outstanding, but the runs behind as well. I think that's, if I'm a little sour, if I'm a little cold on the three-year-olds in general and I'm still hoping for more from them, at least with the Maccabi Diva, so we've had the Winx and the Maccabi Diva and even the Memsie, I feel like that scene is well set up. I think we've got a good set of horses in there.
Speaker 2Did you expect that from her? Was she better than you thought she would be there on Saturday, she's alibi?
Speaker 6No, I mean, without wanting to be a Tuesday's expert, that seems about right. I think that fell in line roughly with what the market expected as well. So I think as a punting nation, we can pat ourselves on the back and say, we got that one about right. We knew what was coming.
Speaker 2Even the whirlpool got it right as well.
Speaker 6Even the whirlpool got it right, yeah. When those favourites win, they tend to get it very right. But yeah, even the runs in behind there, I think you'd be more than happy to walk away with Sir Delius from that and say he's run essentially what he's run first up over a mile in the race. In the past year, so he's on track for Cox Plate Day, which is where all roads lead for him. And then even, I thought she's a hustler, was terrific. And I really liked the run of half yours. So I think all of that set the big names up for the spring ahead.
Speaker 2We just had Chris on and I asked him about Autumn Boy. He was very good. Like, do you take on she's alibi once again in a golden eagle or do you go down the easier path and try and win a Cox Plate?
Speaker 6The easier path. Yeah, he'd probably look at it really and think the winnings, yeah, maybe it's potentially easier, but there's not much in it. No. That's a very good question. I would be, I'd have to sit in this garden here in the sunshine and think very long and hard about that. I was actually looking at the decision for she's alibi as well. And she goes to the golden eagle and I think they're basically on record saying we're going for the cash.
Speaker 4Correct.
Speaker 6But if you do the sums, the opportunity cost is something that probably needs to be considered. And if she runs in the golden eagle, it seems like she won't run again before the golden eagle. And it probably wipes out Champions Day on the last day. So if you actually, if you assume that she's sort of twos on in a might and power and twos on in a champion and even money in a Cox Plate and then do the sums on what those races are worth. And even if I was mucking around with this yesterday, a bit of back of the envelope maths, because I'm clearly, not busy enough. Even if you consider like she's a 10% chance after the might and power to not make the Cox Plate and then a 20% chance not to make the champion stakes. Even with all that value calculated together, she'd still need to be inside $1.50 in the golden eagle for that one run to be worth more. So it is, you do, I know that you get one big payout in a golden eagle, but you do forego a lot. So the decision isn't maybe that straightforward financially, I don't think.
Speaker 2I think it's more than that. Listening to Moods there the other day, I think Chris Waller has got a lot to answer for regarding this as well, because Moods did point out that he admires what Chris Waller does with his horses, especially looking after them. And they want to race this mare on till she's six or seven. So they're probably thinking, I reckon as well, that if we go to a Cox Plate and then champion's day, are we too taxing on her and her four-year-old spring, spring, year, and do we just look after her and give her one more run? And then we can run in three Cox Plates after this.
Speaker 6I often, this is actually, would be a great conversation to sit down over a quiet port with Chris Waller and, and some other hands on horse people and talk about, because I always look at this and think there's this assumption and I don't know whether it's true or not in the very little digging that I've done, I can't say that it is true. But there is this assumption that if you don't have a run now, you'll get it later on. And I'm not sure that it just doesn't actually by my read of the racing population and where horses race and how often they race. And there could be a bit of two-way cause going on here, but if you don't run three times this spring, you don't just get those three runs later when she's six or seven. And in fact, horses who have tended to race more at two and three have been raised more as older horses. And that could be, as I said before, it could be going the wrong way. They race a lot. Because they're sound rather than their sound, because they race a lot. So I can see that. And I would have to concede. I'm a big advocate for practice over patients. So I think they should at least consider that. Cause I think that there is obviously courses for courses and different horses are suited to different things and they need, you know, some horses are going to need heaps of time and less racing and to be, you know, keep gloves if you like. And, and others are going to thrive on, on racing itself and get better with racing and horses, like any athletes would get better with practice and with racing. Um, yeah, it's a really interesting discussion that one. And I think it's, um, I worry sometimes that we've tipped from, and I only say I only worry about it because I'm a punter and a race fan and I want to see these horses. So I'm, I'm thinking from a selfish point of view, I just want them out there. Um, but I do think sometimes we've, we sort of cheerlead a little bit for patients. Like it's absolute genius when they, you know, we're off to the paddock and it's like, wow, what a patient training. That's superb. But we never actually get to see what they've foregone. Yeah. Um, and how much, how much have they left on the table by, by going to the paddock? Was it actually a good decision? I mean, maybe, maybe not. Um, you know, you could say she might get to run in three more Cox plates, but she might get to run in none and she might forego, you know, three goes at it this year. So it's all a bit of an unknown, but that's how I think that's an interesting conversation. Anyway,
Speaker 2we might ask Troy Causton's and Calvin McAvoy tomorrow on the Wednesday agenda. Yeah. It's Chris Wallace or like we've, we've been able to, we've talked to him a little bit about this. And I think the perfect example is Eliana last year. Everyone says, why wouldn't you go to a Caulfield cup with her, Chris? And he had this philosophy that if you go to a Caulfield cup, even though it's 400 meters extra, it could break her heart. And then we miss out on trying to win Melbourne cups and Cox plates, like multiple group ones with her. We might win that Caulfield cup, but how much has that hurt us down there in the long run? So, and, um, as Wayne Hawks pointed out yesterday, it's like they're different horses these days. Like they're not, they're not made like they were used to. Like they're not the same horses that they were 10 or 15 years ago. So,
Speaker 6uh, no, I think that's true. I don't think anyone's really advocating for campaigning like juggler and octagonal. I think we understand that the game has changed and the game's changed on and off the track. So that's not, um, that's not going to happen. We're not going to say, you know, juggler having a 75th run for the campaign. on the quick backup for the eighth time. i understand that but yeah it's a very interesting conversation because i think there is probably a um a slight divide between the sort of data nerds and and the people with hands on the horses and both of them probably have something worthwhile to say and it's it's probably like so many things
Speaker 2gareth the answer is probably somewhere in the middle who would you be backing over 1600 i know we get i know we saw it over 1400 there the other day and the wink stakes um but what prices would they be autumn glow she's alibi so they met the king charles it's interesting because we're a
Speaker 6very simple numbers point of view so she's alibi ran to one two six on the weekend so they're both now they both have a peak rating of 128 they've both run over 125 three times so their profile is um very very similar and outstanding both of them on on that very simple measure they are um they're in the top 10 mayors of the century in australia both of them um but i still think in in probably we go to the races tomorrow it's closer than it was at 1400 because i think the mile was in you know we saw that on the weekend i think that was worth something to she's alibi um but i wouldn't go my feel getting away from the numbers for a second my feel is that autumn glow is is sort of 60 40 yeah yeah so what's that dollar 68 v 250 i think would probably be something like it head to head yeah there you go um as chris waller you have a view there i know that you think autumn glow is better than winks
Speaker 2as per last week yeah yeah that's a good point you make but after listening to chris waller he goes i just um i was watching her gallop there on saturday and it was unbelievable work um he said i haven't seen a horse gallop like that for a long long time so uh yeah i don't know i like it she's alibi um she's she's becoming uh the people's horse in a way because of the story regarding her the gnoll and pete moody and and fred nosky so i think it's great for racing hopefully they'll meet again maybe in the autumn um i reckon i reckon it's a little closer than that like um it'd be interesting to see what does happen next time so do the numbers yeah over 1600 meters so um yeah we'll have to wait maybe a few more months but it'll be worth the wait i've got to take a break i'm going to come back there's plenty more to discuss it was great international racing on the weekend i want to ask you about those three year olds as well

Speaker 2gareth hall welcome back to giddy up adam blanco from racing and sports.com is with me um adam what three-year-old do you want to be taking home after the weekend um i have a little bit of a
Speaker 6feeling a little bit of a thing for under focus in sydney he's a horse i'm um yeah he he's hitting the vibometer with a with a bit of pang at the moment but um as a rule i'm still waiting to be swept off my feet i did have a i was sort of skimming through um the the fillies looking for sort of potential flight thousand guineas fillies and i couldn't really see like that cupboard feels very bare doesn't it um well woven's a nice horse he's now run over 106 times which makes him you know more than anyone else in his generation but he's still a ways short of um guest house is the highest rated horse of of that group but he's second which tells you that there's a big gap there behind guest house waiting to be filled with good ones um and you'd like to think that there'd be whether it's guest house himself or or another there'd be one that jumps the bar that guest house has been to already so um the answer to that question is i'm i'm still i'm still searching i'm still swiping around on tinder they're looking for my uh looking for my dream date gareth i can't find one that i'm yeah natural fling almost had me i'm and i'm not nearly i'm not completely going on that i've hit bookmark on that one okay um yeah no i'm nothing springing to mind rapidly
Speaker 2i gotta say is is so dearly still the horse to beat in the cocks plate for you
Speaker 6yeah i probably yeah he would be i haven't sacked dalyana off the first up run and i i think chow wolf is closer to him than than maybe the general thing so i think that that big trio is a genuine big trio and i think birdman belongs in there with them i think he's another one who might be slightly undersold so is so dearly it's the horse to beat in the cocks plate yes do i think it's clear cut and that he's a dominant or imposing favorite or anything that anyone should be scared of running into no i think it's um i think there's a big four there if you like and and we've got a what should be i think a pretty fierce betting contest for the cocks plate which is always nice yeah um and then can
Speaker 2you give us a little bit of background on the cocks and how it's going to play out um yeah well i think the cocks are going to play out in the cocks plate um and the cocks are
Speaker 6going to play out in the cocks plate um and the cocks are going to play out in the cocks plate and the cocks are going to play out in the cocks plate and the cocks are going to play out in the cocks plate and the cocks are going to play out in the cocks plate and the cocks are going to play out in the cocks plate and the cocks are going to play out in the cocks plate and the cocks are going to play out in the cocks plate and the cocks are So maybe that, maybe that. But I don't think, I think if things were, if we had ourselves a fair fight, we just stood in the middle of the ring and threw haymakers, I think She's Alibi would walk out.
Speaker 2Beautiful. We're going to take a break on the other side. I'm going to ask you about the Melbourne Cup and maybe a few of those international runners that competed over the weekend.
Speaker 1736, 736, live across Australia. This is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 2Welcome back to Giddy Up, Gareth Hall, with you Adam Blenko from RacingAndSports.com. You always got to trust your instinct, don't you, Adam?
Speaker 7You do in this game, you do. You trust, trust your instinct. I'm trusting your instinct.
Speaker 2I'm trusting your instinct. Out of all the runners across the weekend in Europe, he's the horse that caught my eye. Now, am I on the money or not?
Speaker 6You've got a straying eye there, Gareth, to go looking out the back of the telly there at about 2am on a Sunday night. For the whole weekend, that's the one that grabbed your attention. It was a perfectly acceptable stopgap run before Melbourne. It looked exactly like how I think they would have liked it to look. Jan Breugel, who we all know down here for not having come here, was running away from it at the finish there, but we know that that's good form and the winners, the superstars. So, yeah, they'd be more than happy with that. But he had a good weekend, Joseph, for the 50th time this year, I suppose, and he continues to strengthen his Melbourne Cup squad there. So, Sons and Lovers ran really well on the Saturday and I think he's about as good as Trust Your Instinct. I think they're both pretty similar and good types. And then Highwayman has emerged out of absolutely nowhere to be a Melbourne Cup chance. So, I think the story is that they are thinking Melbourne Cup with him as well, which is, yeah, he has emerged very quickly out of nowhere. He was rated 59. I think it was 59 or 56 after three starts.
Speaker 2Starving story. I think it was even lower than that.
Speaker 6Yeah, I think officially it would have been, yeah.
Speaker 2Yeah, I had a chat to Safi Osborne this morning. We recorded it. And she goes, it's one of the most remarkable stories, really, from how far this horse has come in a short amount of time to win a St. Ledger. And not just win, he did it pretty easily in the end.
Speaker 6Yeah, and ran to a good number. So, yeah, wow. It's, yeah, you do not see that every day. That's for sure and certain. He was, he went from legless to superstar very, very quickly.
Speaker 2Correct. It's similar to like, I don't know, defiantly. He's come a long way in a short amount of time as well for Joseph O'Brien. So, he's got some team. He might have six or seven in the Melbourne Cup.
Speaker 6Yeah, well, I think those ones, there's a few there that I think, you know, I know that he's starting to, as you say, he's getting horses to change. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. He's changing the colours a bit. And defiantly, you're right, he's another one who wasn't without talent, but his talent looked very specific and it looked very much stamina. He looked, let's be honest, slow.
Speaker 2Yeah, he did.
Speaker 6But he, he did. But he, you arguably looked a little bit quicker at Goodwood without me being convinced. And then in France last time, he was much, much quicker. Yeah. So, yeah, he's turned that horse around. From a Jerry Godel. There's a handful that he's bringing down here.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 6Yeah.
Speaker 2From a Jerry Godel and Coxplayed horse.
Speaker 6So, yeah, he looked like he would be staying on at the finish of the Jericho and maybe looking for a bit further still. But that's changed. And now maybe, I suppose you do have to take him pretty seriously. And so there's a handful of ones that he's sending down here as well that I think are just boats. But I suppose maybe when you have a look at Highwayman and defiantly, you think, well, maybe I should just be a little bit careful before I start absolutely slating these horses because he's, he's having one hell of a year, Joseph. It's not even just at the top level we're seeing. We're seeing it right throughout. And it's also, I think one of the, the things, I mean, I know we're talking about his stayers here and he's obviously a great trainer of stayers, he's, he's won races at the Cheltenham Festival. He's, you know, he's got a good set of jumpers as well. So he knows what he's doing there, but he's also got fast two-year-old fillies. He's got, you know, sprinters, milers, he's got it all. So he's, he's versatile and he's, as I said, as well, he's versatile at levels as well. He's, he's got all these great group one horses, but he's doing terrific things at a lower level as well.
Speaker 2We'll continue on our chat about Joseph O'Brien. Brian Stratt after this here on Giddy Up with Adam Blenko.

Speaker 2with gareth hall welcome back to giddy up adam blanco from racing and sports is my special guest bella youngberry is about to join us and then trent mason how to with all of the latest racing news um then we'll catch up with henry plumtree from cambridge stud guy moldcastle will join us and then uh saffy osborne an interview i recorded this morning she will join us as well on giddy up after she created history by becoming the first female jockey to win an english classic by winning the 250th running of the english saint ledger so it's a really good interview there with saffy osborne what a star she is now adam um have you changed your mind with any of your future plays after watching those videos
Speaker 6international races there on the weekend with any of my future plays um no i haven't seen a caulfield cup threat come from abroad that's that's not mj just yet i don't think um because the two joseph is sending for that that's they're not the ones we saw on the weekend the ones on the
Speaker 2weekend are melbourne cup only i believe is that right um which yes yes yeah yeah i think he's um
Speaker 6i think the two or three that he he nominated for caulfield looked um yeah i'd be very comfortable holding an mj ticket against them the omni man and omni man and maybe i can't even they're such high maybe small fry who
Speaker 2chased hope well small fry's got to get to the melbourne cup so um and for jars 15 now we bet 365 for the caulfield cup johnny o'neill says he's going to trifecta it so we shouldn't even bother he's got saran saint george and what was the other horse that he had point of law of course and i said point of laws okay no chance because no way no way johnny gosden would let the king and the queen um give away a horse to kirimar racing to win a melbourne cup what else oh stafford's the horse at 21 like my spies were telling me he's a caulfield cup horse but you've just um not just called um poured water over it but um ice cold water over stafford's chances unfortunately for us omni man's the other one yeah
Speaker 6as i said joseph's making you know joseph's training well enough that maybe i think he could make a fool of me but i'll um no i'll hang out i'll hang out on that limb and say no yeah it's a no from me for them they don't look the type so i'll um m jar is um he's 15 he's much better than them yeah he's much sharper much better than them and much more caulfield cuppy
Speaker 2than them i think yeah um beautiful mate you're ready for take your pick on this tuesday morning let's pick them all right then here we go paradoxium war woven war woven i wonder where they'll go with war woven caulfield guineas i was surprised when i heard that but anyway he's mum yeah there's stamina
Speaker 6on the damn side i think there is probably some um yeah you could do that i think highway man or chocolates uh highway man i wanted to go the other way but i but no it's probably the highway man is more likely to win it he's almost as good as rekindling was for the same stable coming down here it's just that he hasn't come from such um it's all happened so quickly but
Speaker 2he's there now so why wouldn't you back him off that then in a melbourne cup i'm just having a little more price he is now for a melbourne cup um you've talked me into it highway there we go he is what 15 now so he's probably rock bottom but he has passed the ct so is he yeah yeah okay well
Speaker 6that's a big hurdle jumped yeah i think most of them are going to be going to be going to be going to joseph jones you always look like he'd jump hurdles yes yes yes yes linderman bird man oh jeez don't do that to me gareth that's um i can't pick one for fear of upsetting the other one i love them both so dearly um bird man but it hurts linderman cosmic crusader
Speaker 2oh big linderman big linderman yeah so there's no it's a no brainer for chris to to go to call for linderman it's a tono glow natural fling natural fling joker's grin smoochino
Speaker 6did the galati party come to a stop in adelaide over the weekend i need to check in there
Speaker 2yeah it was it was a good run by smoochino in fact um i reckon that i'm going to chase that story up with indy one app but i reckon he could be a manicato horse smoochino am i dreaming there i thought he was excellent there in the
Speaker 6the wiley handicap uh i'll have to dig a bit deeper to find out if you're dreaming or not my first my first vibe take there is that you're um you're out on a limb okay she's alibi autumn glow 1600 meters the final one today um yeah that's a head v heart head autumn glow heart cheese alibi i'd like she's an alibi to be the best horse in the country i think autumn glow is autumn boy
Speaker 2bavewack
Speaker 6anywhere specific or just in general which one do i want in my barn this spring they might go to a golden eagle this spring and do i have to um can i overrule chris waller on campaigning yes it's too late
Speaker 2for me to get bivocked into the rupert club yeah and that's too late now he's a manicato but okay well i'll take autumn boy and i'll win the epson all right yeah he will like can you believe that well written got 55 and he got 55 and a half i feel bad about that because i was banging on a
Speaker 6about how she was so badly underrated by the handicapper over there and i think i spurred
Speaker 2the local handicapper on it's your fault the poor kiwi he's like i'm going to stay out of mr zhang's way i think her last start she beat media was it media world i think it's media world yeah yeah she beat him well she beat him well i know she beat him well but like um poor old autumn boy's been beat by she's alibi and um she's got a kill like he's he's a kilo and a half better off at wait for age so i think he's beautifully placed yeah yeah hey um they're off about levels
Speaker 6in the epsom are they yes oh sorry yeah i'm getting sidetracked now you've got me thinking
Speaker 2about the epsom what a race what a race it's going to be um i hope they go to the cox plate with autumn boy but anyway um time will tell hey always a pleasure time shall tell i'm looking forward to thursday next week um so the pun is preamble who isn't the pun is preamble simon dinopolis has been in great form one of the greatest voices in podcast history simon dinopolis yeah ask him that question for me can you uh i'll listen this question for you on thursday joker's grin smoochino i will i'll ask him that and he'll um that's
Speaker 6exactly the sort of question you get very passionate about one way or the other although i think it might be a bit like lindeman birdman for me he might be um it might be hard for
Speaker 2him to split them but i'll ask it's been disappointing tell him a little lately too since he broke one story he hasn't really fired back since then so i know it was a big story and he's probably going to win a walkley for it but um he's gone quiet since all right well all the
Speaker 6whispers he gets these days are not fit for public consumption thank you thanks adam there's adam

Speaker 2bella youngberry there at doom but on saturday the queensland metro jockey premiership i know we're early on in the season what we're about a month and a half in but she's four in front bella of ben thompson and ryan maloney what a start to the season for this young gun from queensland and as chris nelson pointed out yesterday when i've talked to a few people that follow queensland racing a little closer than i is that she's just got this x factor a natural gift on top of a horse and bella joins us now good day bella hey guys how are we um i'm
Speaker 9very well how about that on saturday oh it was pretty good to uh notch up my my second uh metro treble i was i was pretty pumped i thought i might have had a stab at my first floor timer but i just didn't quite get there yet again yeah um so how long you been riding for now um i think i've been running for uh race riding just over two years yeah and so how did you get into it um i'm not from a racing background at all i was just that little girl that loves love ponies and then begged dad for one when i was about six years old and just to go to a riding club and sort of learnt through pony club and i i eventually got a few off the tracks from the sunshine coast and retrained them to be my show jumpers and that's sort of how i fell in love with the thoroughbred and they sort of led me led me to the racetrack and so how did you get an
Speaker 2opportunity at the racetrack then did you go looking for an opportunity or um through pony club you're able to to meet people that helps you get to say adam campton's place it's it's quite a
Speaker 9funny story how i got into actually my my dad obviously the web man he was flown out to birds for one year for the races and on on the plane he was sat next to jockey called nathan day and um they got to talking and then dad obviously told him what i wanted to do and and nathan got me my first job um up at the sunshine coast to learn to ride track work for daryl hansen
Speaker 2and there you go the rest is history the rest is history um was it like when you first started did you feel that that um this was this is what you were born to do was in an easy transition um what what was your first impressions of riding a thoroughbred at track work
Speaker 9it was just a big burst of adrenaline i obviously just loved the horses they they were everything to me and i always wanted to find a job that i could work with horses and be paid that way and when i found out this is just something i latched on to and i sort of sat on my first one track work and thought holy spagoli this is this is different to my little pony covers and and then i think ever since i had my first gallop or jump out i just it clicked from then and i knew this is all i ever wanted to do
Speaker 2and it seems like even if you you haven't been in the game for uh like only two years it's just like only two years it's amazing that you've got that ability already to read a race and to put your horse into the right place so like is that just being um if you just picked it up quickly because obviously um you're a natural at it or do people help you do the form um so how you how like what what would you put that down to your success with your ability to read a race um it's something i've really
Speaker 9worked on probably the most out of everything in my writing um since i started it's always sort of been drilled into me that it's probably one of the most important things is to be able to read a race and i certainly couldn't when i first started so i knew that that was my weakness and that's what i wanted to work on and eventually turn it into my strengths um i always just watch a lot of races if i'm not at the races i'll be watching them and you know i try to learn off what other jockeys do and follow and try different things that they do and um obviously i've had very good mentors like robbie frad and michael carl um around me who have you know gone through replays and i've sort of just learned along the way how to do that yeah and what do you think the secret is to being a good jockey
Speaker 2to being the best what in what would you say that would be right now oh i think i think probably
Speaker 9being able to take the good with the bad um is probably one of the most important is being level-headed and and you know being able to cop having a bad day just as well as having a good day and just sort of staying grounded and just remembering where he came from really yeah um
Speaker 2gary youngberry is a superstar channel nine television weather presenter and he's been like they tell me in queensland when you put the news on he's part of everyone's family basically he's been doing it for that long but the poor old weather presenter he's been doing it for that long the poor old weather presenters in the racing industry they cop a bad whack from time to time because they say that they never get it right when it comes to predicting the weather um your old man how good is he at it like does he get the weather right when you say oh dad i'm on a horse that enjoys the heavy track on on saturday um do you think the rain will be coming is he spot on usually
Speaker 9um i can't talk i may be amongst those keyboard warriors sometimes when he tells me to take a rain jacket to work and i end up sweating or he doesn't tell me and it ends up raining or i need a wet track this week it's coming and it doesn't come or i need a dry track and he forgets to tell me that's going to be a heavy 10 but when he does get it right it's certainly helpful insight
Speaker 2yeah um and um has it surprised you with how well that you've gone this season
Speaker 9yes definitely i i sort of never thought that i'd be in the position that i am riding for the trainers that i'm riding for and i was only talking to my dad maybe a couple of days ago and i just said you know what i'd had a i had a bad day and i said to him you know what two years ago my worst day in town is would have been my dream so yeah how good's that definitely yeah it's it's something i'm very proud of that i've i've worked towards and you had just proud that i sort of just kept chasing even even when things didn't seem possible or out of reach but yeah
Speaker 2um when did it like has there been challenging times for you in the early part of your career
Speaker 9yeah absolutely obviously when i when i started out um i certainly wasn't the best it wasn't it was hard to get support um early days and i traveled far and wide and thankfully um i went on a three-month loan and got a bit of support out west which is where i gained my confidence i think obviously confidence is a massive thing in racing that is also another big thing that that makes is is confidence and i was quite lucky once i got up and going to continue with that support and
Speaker 2continue building confidence well um you're a star of the sport now bella and it's great to see the success that you're having and especially like yeah yeah you're riding a lot of winners for as well so it's good to have the support i guess of queensland's premier trainer because you are getting plenty of opportunities and that ride and live a little you timed it to perfection there on saturday um looks like liver little is definitely a promising stay going places
Speaker 9no he certainly is i know i know tony has a has a good opinion of the horse and um obviously he thought he could win on saturday which he did and there was probably a point in the race where i was starting to get a bit worried it was getting a bit messy but thankfully i knew what sort of horse i had underneath me and he could get the job done and lots of people at the moment like to tell me the stats that tony and i have and i love to remind him too yeah yeah yeah so i said i'm not going to
Speaker 2ride for him tomorrow he must have forgot to um bring your manager but you've got some nice rides anyway and i'm sure you'll be back on the golem runners there on saturday but bella thanks for your time well done and um yep good luck for the rest of the season you go and win that premiership now i hope so thank you so much for having me there's bella youngberry young star and um yeah she's just riding beyond two years at the moment trent mason howdy he's become the biggest news breaker in the game these days he'll be joining us next thanks to racing.com here on giddy up on
Speaker 1this tuesday morning join the conversation text us on 049736736 live across australia
Speaker 2this is giddy up with gareth hall welcome back to giddy up trent mason howdy from racing.com joins us g'day trent morning jay morning everyone you've been busy mate um your work's been sensational especially at the start of the week when we're trying to work out where all these horses are going but the big news yesterday that you broke sack lloyd gets the ride on well written which was no real surprise i think we always knew that there was going to be an australian jockey on her um but it's been now official that he gets the ride on on this superstar kiwi man yeah and
Speaker 10this has been a polarizing decision the social media community have been split on this a lot of people saying smart choice zach's a gun and rightly so and i think it's been a polarizing decision and he is and a lot of people feeling for maddie car which i understand as well my personal stance on this is i think it's a very good call i would have done the same thing at the end of the day the owners own the horse they're entitled to do whatever they want they need to pick their best asset to get the job done in a 1.5 million dollar race now zach lloyd is one of the best young jockeys in australia one of the best jockeys in australia in my opinion he's certainly in the top 10 i would have him uh maybe even higher and i think it's a very good call i think it's a very good call and maddie cartwright's top five now zach yeah i agree with that and maddie cartwright's never ridden at ranwick so he's done nothing wrong on this mare in new zealand but it's a different ball game in sydney so i think they've made a good call on the right decision i can understand
Speaker 2and i love the the passion racing fans have but if you own that horse and you had a choice between zach lloyd and maddie cartwright to ride at ranwick i think that you most of us i'm might be wrong but you would you would you'd go it's a no-brainer for me you go zach lloyd yeah
Speaker 10absolutely it's no different to a football team picking their best team like geelong made a hard call in dropping sam deconing for two finals it's just what you've got to do to try and win the win the game or the race so i think it's a good decision and he'll give her that mare every
Speaker 2chance and he might get his opportunity something that happens um in the future that he might get back on well written many cartwright and he's done a great job with her like they're unbeaten
Speaker 10seven out of seven two group ones he's done nothing wrong and and that's what connections have said matt's done nothing wrong he's still a big part of the team and her future he's going to continue to ride her when she goes back to new zealand yeah so i just think it's understandable and for those people saying oh this is a disgrace there's no loyalty in racing that's just garbage there is loyalty in race look at peter moody standing by luke nolan like a lot of people she's alibi than lute and moody will just not entertain it they've stuck fat through thick and thin those two 35 group ones together and he just won't have a bar of no but if you're moody
Speaker 2i think you're just backing luke nolan every day of the week you proved that on saturday and they combine to be unbeaten with black caviar Like that is a combination that know their games better than anyone. Um, so it's just, it's, it's horses for courses in a way. And people go about loyalty in the game of, um, horse racing these days. Like it's, it's a million dollar business and, um, like the jockeys jump off more than the jockeys jump off more than the owners sack the jockey. Yep. Yeah. So if there's loyalty in the game, like Craig Williams, is he riding Mr. Brightside over Sir Delius?
Speaker 10Yep. Exactly right. Yeah.
Speaker 2And you can understand why Williams would be riding Sir Delius over Mr. Brightside. So it's just the world that we live in these days.
Speaker 10No, it is. It is.
Speaker 2Um, what else have you got for us? You're at Caulfield this morning. He's always interesting, Chris, while he joined us from the top. Yeah. I listened to that on the way in. I think that, um, and he's hard to read from time to time, Chris. I think that he'll stay in Sydney with Aliana and Lindemann. Do you? Yeah. I think Aliana will definitely stay in Sydney.
Speaker 10So it's interesting because there's seven nominations for the seven stakes. If those three that he mentioned all come to Melbourne, i.e. Aliana, Lindemann and Lady Shenandoah, we've got a four horse field for the seven stakes. And what price does all, I mean, she's going to be ridiculous. She'll be a dollar five regardless.
Speaker 2Yeah. Yeah. But it could be a four, four horse race if they all come here. So what do you do with Lindemann? You look at like on, on paper, he's the only speed in the Underwood state. And you'd lead them up in a seven stakes and he probably runs second to Autumn Glow on the seven stakes. I think it's 200,000. Um, but I reckon he'd nearly be the horse to beat, I reckon, if you went to the Underwood.
Speaker 10Yeah. I think there's every chance he gets, uh, particularly given that it's going to be good ground there on Saturday at Caulfield. So it could be hard to make ground. Um, we've seen Caulfield become a little bit leaderish when the track's pretty, pretty firm. So, uh, forecast in Melbourne is very good for the remainder. It's the latter part of the week. So we'll see what plays out there. Um, I think it's just all draw dependent with a lot of Wallace horses. He waits until the Wednesday when the final fields and the draws come out and makes the decision on how he thinks the horses get their best chance. And he spoke about the ownership. I think you're right. Lady Shenandoah is probably the most likely to come to Melbourne because she's racing the same interests as Autumn Glow, Hermitage are in both. So they'll want to avoid that. Um, and it does look a good race for her with the weight. So if she draws well, I think she's a big chance in it. Yeah, I just don't know about Lady Shenandoah though, like she's got a bit of identity, like what is she?
Speaker 2She could be a 1400 meter group, one winner on Saturday. She could be. Yeah. Yeah. There's a few horses like that. I think if you were like what we have so many options for these horses here in Australia, but one option that they, we don't have for these horses is a 1400 meter race in the middle of the spring. Like there's this kickoff points, like the Winx and the Mimsy, and then the Serupa Clark at the back end, but for horses like ladies. Shenandoah and Baywack and Angel Capital, and you could even really put Jimmy Starr in that category. There's no real 1400 meter, big grand final race for these horses. So, um, Baywack has to go back to 1200 meters of the Manukato, whether he can be dominant when like he loves to own races. Has he got the speed to own a race over 1200?
Speaker 10He looked very good today. Gee, Sammy Highland not happy with, uh, my, my support of Zach Lloyd. What did Sammy say? Oh, he's not happy at all.
Speaker 2He said, give me a spell. Cart riders. He's done a super job on the horse. I'm beating on her. How do you go to the top level? If you don't get the opportunities, he's done nothing wrong and he gets sacked. And that's a good argument too, from Sammy Highland. Like what, so Matty Cartwright goes, what else can I do? Mr. Zhang I'm seven from seven. I've handled the pressure of the Kiwi and Caraca millions day. And you give me the lemonade and says, say, see you later. I'm going to give it to the opportunity to Zach Lloyd.
Speaker 10Who's won a golden slipper and multiple group ones. And he's one of the best jockeys in the country. Yeah.
Speaker 2And so that's, that's the argument, Matt Cartwright would have the Mr. Zhang would go, well, if you, well, you had to go to New Zealand to get your start and to kickstart your career after you struggled to get opportunities in Melbourne. Now we're racing against the best jockeys in the land and I get the opportunity to get Zach Lloyd. He's probably second behind McDonald in Sydney. Um, it's too good of an opportunity not to have Zach Lloyd. What would you do?
Speaker 10What would you do?
Speaker 2Well, I can see both sides of the argument. Yeah. Yeah. But if he was my horse, oh, that's a tough one. If, if they were riding for my life, I'd go Zach Lloyd. But if I had millions of dollars and he did the good job, I said, oh, we'll give you a crack. It's a bit like what Safi Osborne, she'll join us at the top of the next hour. She gets an opportunity late from Joseph O'Brien. Um, obviously there was a lot of jockeys in Ireland cause they had feature racing there, Irish champion stakes weekend. And so she gets an opportunity. She makes the most of that opportunity. And now as Kevin Blake pointed out that she should get, hopefully a few more opportunities now after proving that she can mix it, um, with the best on the big stage and she wins that group one. So it's a game of opportunities. He's, you would think Maticato, I'd be thinking, well, I've created this opportunity to give me a crack at these big races in Sydney and I still miss out. But yeah.
Speaker 10Um, just on the Maticato G you, you mentioned that in Bayvac, gee, it's shaping up well, the field. Uh, so this is Sunday week, the day after the grand final at Caulfield 1200 meters, group one there, my gladiola, uh, after her group one breakthrough last time out Bayvac to giga kick skybird all of another day, extra galactic Jimmy star slick trial yesterday, Napoleonic trolling, well in Sydney, Biedman, GGS, mistruth, Pericles, and charmstone.
Speaker 2One of the best Maticatos that we've seen for quite some time, Sunday afternoon after the AFL grand final. Yep. And that is racing.
Speaker 10That is at the day, as soon as the siren goes on that Saturday afternoon, we are right into racing. Ready to go.
Speaker 2And you have Mr. Brightside and maybe pride of Jenny. Yeah.
Speaker 10Yeah. If it's, if the track's not hard, Mr. B will take on his old sparring partner, pride of Jenny. I tell you what, I know you're pride of Jenny's number one ticket holder in the fan club. I can't believe how well she looks at her age. I've seen her at cram in the last two Mondays. She's absolutely humming.
Speaker 2And she'll win the, I reckon she'll win the empire rose again.
Speaker 10You'd be a brave man to bet against her. She's spot on. And the way Kieran spoke about her yesterday and then the next episode as well, I asked him about the next episode and I said, Oh, is he still a leading cool more contender in your eyes? And he was almost offended by the question. Like he looked at me and went, Oh, definitely. Definitely. He was emphatic. So that's exciting. The cool was going to be a ripper as well.
Speaker 2Well, he did say to me after that trial in Sydney, the jury's out on the next episode.
Speaker 10He told me yesterday he was disappointed with that trial.
Speaker 2Yeah. Yeah. Well, you just had to say it. You just had to say it.
Speaker 10Yeah.
Speaker 2Basically, your eyes don't lie in that situation. So, um, yeah. So pride of Jenny, I wonder how many will turn up to the fair.
Speaker 10Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker 2So there's a few, there's a few trainers that hate competing against pride of Jenny, especially early on in their preparations because of how hard she goes. Um, and bright sides being there, done that. They've had some great, great tussles, haven't they?
Speaker 10Over the years. Well, I think they've said, and, um, correct me if I'm wrong. I think Grace Hayes has, has said, I think on a few occasions that, you know, he, he's always the one having to do the donkey work to cart the field up to her and, um, they've had some really good battles. So, um, that was good news that he's come through. Okay. He pulled up lame, but trotted up fine. Spoke to Benny Hayes on Sunday morning. He's okay. So, uh, he'll press on. You'll be right. Um, but yeah, they'll just be keen to avoid, you know, hard tracks with him from now on, I would imagine.
Speaker 2It's getting an exciting time of the year. Those courses will get the weights for the Melbourne Cup. That's today. Thursday? Thursday or Sunday. Thursday. On this week. Um, and Joseph O'Brien, I think he's going to have more than five in the Melbourne Cup. Sounds like it, doesn't it? Someone just sent in a text message, Joseph will have seven, Waller will have seven, and Mara will have seven. Um, so yeah, that'll be intriguing. I think most of them have passed even the CT scans I'm hearing. So we don't have to worry about that.
Speaker 10Yeah. That's good news, isn't it? Yeah. Yellow jersey is an interesting nom for the Sarupa Clark. I'm not sure. I'm not sure if they're going to accept. Yeah. Um, but I spoke to the stable on the weekend and they said, they're going to have a look and throw in a nomination. So they did, uh, um, an hour about whether to go first up in the Memsie. Um, so maybe he's too brilliant to, to get a trip and he's going to become a. He's confused everyone. Oh, he has. Yeah.
Speaker 2He like, he was at, was he at Caulfield Cup or a Cox Plate horse? He won over 2,400 meters in France. And you think he's a genius, Andre Favre. Like you watch him here in Australia and that he, they can't hold him. Yep. Yep. And how did he get 2,400 meters? Yeah. And he was disappointing there at Caulfield. That was a flop.
Speaker 10Yep.
Speaker 2So I reckon Calvin and Tony want to get the next run right with him. Yep.
Speaker 10Um. Regal Award will be hard to beat. I reckon they've really. In the Sarupa Clark. Yeah. They've got this guy going really well and they think this might be his best opportunity to win a group one, this prep. Yeah. First up, he's going to be ready to go. Lockie Neindorf, if he draws a gate with his weight, I think he'll be right there on top of the ground.
Speaker 2We might have to give Philip Stokes and that a call. We need, we, we need a horse in the, um, Supernova and the Meteorite. Okay. Like he'd be perfect 1,400 meters at Pakenham on his home track. Yep. Um, Jigsaw, I don't know if he's going to go to the slot race. He might, he might, I reckon he might go to Winterbottom. Yep. Jigsaw.
Speaker 10Yep. He, he was, he trialed well again yesterday. So, um, for those asking Jigsaw and the Manicato, my last conversation with, yeah, Scalacci. Um, she said she'd probably bypass. the Manicato and go to the Scalacci. Natural Fling, I think he's going to go stay against her own age and go to the dane hill um so and just on the next episode kieran said probably two runs into the coolmore so i would imagine that'll be dane hill blue sapphire
Speaker 2coolmore we'll run through some quick questions for you the hour we're going to call you the hour from now on which was established by daniel harford back mark stevens mark stevens yeah i saw him at the races devo um so why you call the hour because you get up nice and early yeah i used to
Speaker 10do on my old rsn days um steve-o got me when he was producing breakfast to follow the overnight scores and come on early and give her a rap so i was the night owl is matt cut is matt cartwright
Speaker 2sacked when i was working for melbourne job led to an interstate investigation then the interstate guys would get the job i don't consider myself sacked it just made sense to use local knowledge that's a that's a very good point from gregor i don't think he's been sacked this well he has
Speaker 10been in a way well it just yeah and it's it's local knowledge i spoke to steven marsh yesterday and he was at pains to to to say that matt's done nothing wrong
Speaker 2we've just got we want local knowledge surely if you're seven from seven you have done the best you can can't do any better you deserve your chance if you stuff it up or aren't good enough then you could get replaced at least you know where you sit how are these jockeys meant to know if they're up to the big time if you never get the opportunity that's from marcus um yeah so there's strong
Speaker 10arguments for both sides i hear and there's one here uh as the great bob sugar says in jerry it's not show friends it's show business yeah cartwright just needs to keep working and prove everyone wrong no one owes anyone anything in life that's very true like outside of and matt cartwright is a very good jockey who's come a long way but he probably still needs another horse or another two good horses and a few more group ones to really put him on the map good on you mate we appreciate your time train there's another one here just quickly uh piggybacks chances in the underwood she will go she'll run piggyback will either run in the naturalism or the kingston town
Speaker 2bony face will run in the kingston town just with the underwood field i went through it just before um it's going to be a smallish field as well yeah the underwood so you're going to have where is the underwood market a lot of these horses are going to a naturalism so aliana unlikely buckaroo yes linderman yes oh unlikely or 50 50 um cosmic crusader yes birdman yes evaporator um rupert clark rupert clark kingswood yes middle earth naturalism no
Speaker 10supremacy no so kieran will have one runner in the underwood and that's middle earth and then pinstripe is not going to go to underwood i don't think so but i've texted j no he's naturalism and
Speaker 2piggyback 50 50 naturalism so that's confirmed one two three four five five in underwood
Speaker 10burnman buckaroo cosmic crusader kingswood middle earth linderman maybe it depends how many chris ends up with in the race but yeah it could be a small field there you go the fields will be red hot on saturday though the support card the how now it's going to be a good race you've got point barrow in karuna shadavar um you got the preludes for the the boys and the girls uh so now looking forward to it and
Speaker 2the weather's going to be amazing 25 degrees get to corfield 25 ticket 25 tickets at ticket tech you get group one action um a great handicap race that's when racing and it's best for the
Speaker 10racing purists and it'll be a big field too yeah be great betting the under the underwood
Speaker 2stakes is always intriguing and then you can watch the brisbane lines belt hawthorne after that big
Speaker 10screen can i just plug one of my i don't have to do this but i'm really enjoying doing a series called where are they now uh last week i did pompey ruler okay um which was uh very well received i bumped into seamus mills at the midweek races last week and he was reading the story and he he said i actually looked after pompey rule i want to work for mick and he was my favorite horse and anyway the subject this week is tester rossa who won the sir rupert clark stakes in 2003 he's still going strong at 30 years of age at binary stud oh how good's that so that'll be up um maybe
Speaker 2tomorrow if not thursday beautiful we'll keep an eye on the racing.com website for that good on you good on you al thanks mate there's the al there trent mason how the time for a break we'll come back with breeding and bloodstock henry plumtree from cambridge will be my special guest next
Speaker 1join the conversation text us on 0 4 double 9 7 3 6 7 3 6 live across australia this is giddy up with
Speaker 2gareth hall welcome back to giddy up it's time for breeding and bloodstock on giddy up and i tell you what they've always done an extremely good job cambridge stud an iconic farm in world racing but they're having a wonderful time of it with their stallions just producing black type winners week in week out and this would put a big smile on our next guest his face in henry plumtree and he joins us now hello henry thanks for your time good morning gareth it's been morning it's been um a wonderful
Speaker 11time you've lost my number no we've we got it back we we got it back good on please where have you been i've sat in my office with the boys and said you know i reckon gareth lost my number he hasn't spoken to me for months i did text you the other day
Speaker 2there was something i think it was who was it tommy wood put out on from hong kong that jolly star um there might be something wrong with her and then we got that quickly clarified that she was okay and she was ready to go at the trials the next week but you must be excited to see her back at the races
Speaker 11on saturday i'm going i'm going to go over on friday for saturday's race i mean look it's a it's a sort of look and feel situation with her because i think when they've done that trip to and back you don't really know whether they've still got a bit of jet lag until you run them she looks she looks well um it's been well documented that she lost a lot of weight on the trip over to london um you know she had a 41 hour flight and that's knocked her around a bit but she's got most of that weight back on and chris um chris has been keeping a very close eye on her obviously at rose hill she had 10 days at the farm when she got out of quarantine and she enjoyed that but i think it's a sort of look and feel situation saturday we'll see how she runs there and then make a decision about
Speaker 2what happens next and she surprised you um because i remember having a chat to you before she went to the uk and you thought well we probably missed the everest this time around because we we don't want to rush it back and um we'll just concentrate maybe down the straight obviously she's enjoyed her time back in in australia since she's come back
Speaker 11in the back of my mind and good judges have used to say to me all the time that horses will go maybe two preparations and then they need a proper break in the back of my mind with her she hasn't really had a long break since the middle of november last year after the champions sprint um she's had a week here and there um but not a proper six week down in the paddock spell and i think that's you know she'll tell us on saturday whether that's weighing on her or not and um you know i but you just i can't second guess what chris waller's doing in his team you know they've they've done an amazing job with her and you know she's got all the regulars around her you know chris harwood who rides all the time and lee her strapper and you know everyone's happy at the moment but we'll run it on saturday and see what happens
Speaker 2she's sort of states doing a great job
Speaker 11well saturday was just a bit of the whole weekend was a bit of a red letter weekend for him because apart from the winners that he had he's he had a couple of fillies that ran really well first time out beautiful filly of tiar cars that ran third in the stakes race in christ church on saturday lovely filly that we ran it to rapper on sunday got beaten ahead first start and obviously that colt in sydney gareth he's very excited about that and he's got a lot of people that are fighting for all the connections there and it's a real nod to kiora stud shane wright and his team there who were persuaded to come into the horse as shareholders and good on them they sent a beautiful mare to him and they bred that colt and he made a lot of money in the ring and um you know it's i just wish the rest of luck with him because it's he's in a great team with bjorn and jim clark and all those guys they're a bloody strong team and uh you just want them to go well i wish i'd kept i wish we'd bought into the horse now
Speaker 2yeah yeah he's he's a good he's a good colt yes and um how is your like obviously we're into the breeding season now and we've talked to a few big farms of recent times and they say that numbers are going pretty well regarding the bookings what about the one of the biggest farms i think you are the biggest farm in new zealand so how's it all tracking there for you look the biggest isn't
Speaker 11really the the right word i mean we might have the most numbers but yeah yeah we we want to be we want to be a big player in an industry where we rely where everyone knows that we rely on everybody else for their support that's the the major thing you can't push the barrow that we're trying to push here at cambridge you know brennan and joe without the support of the industry in new zealand and we've got really good support but we're looking at a situation gareth of declining mare numbers and that's the issue for new zealand is that their mare numbers have dropped from probably six or eight thousand years ago, they're now down to sort of 2,800 active mares. And a big stud like us, if we're standing six stallions, we're taking 600 of those mares, hopefully. That's a big chunk of the market. So what we need is we need that enthusiasm. We need that positive sort of vibe that the industry needs for the next five years to get people back buying brood mares and investing in the breeding industry. That's what we need. I think it's going the right way, but that's what we need. Our bookings are good. Could they be better? Yes, they could be.
Speaker 2What about the interest from Australia now with a few of your bulls?
Speaker 11They're sort of still semi-circular, sort of looking inwards, the Aussies. We do get good individual support from Australia. Half a dozen farms. John Muir has supported us from New South Wales. As I said, Kiora shareholders in Sword Estate. Arrowfield were shareholders in Sword Estate, but they're having a bit of a restructure at the moment. So their share is just about to change hands. Bruce Wilson in Melbourne. Glen Tree has been a big supporter of Chaldean, which is great. Catherine Haynes at Burn Among North, she's been a great supporter. I've been a big supporter of the Chaldeans the last couple of years, but it's not a flood, Gareth. Not like it was when I first came to New Zealand 30 years ago. If these Chaldeans take off, we're hoping for a flood.
Speaker 2They're basically about to launch. Well, sort of start, I reckon. Hello, Usame's doing a good job.
Speaker 11I'm realistic about all of them. They need breadfruit horses. Hello, Usame's doing a great job. Jim Zane's had 18 stakes with us, and he's had a terrific record with his runners. He needs a breakthrough horse. He needs a group one horse, and that might happen this spring. I mean, there's enough talent for him around. I think David Payne's colt is a really good horse. His full brothers with Chris Waller, he's a horse called Hello Captain. He's a very good horse. There's a few of them around, and we're just waiting for one of them to be that breakthrough horse that takes off. There's a very good filly here, which I think you may see later in the spring at Flemington, a filly called Drops of God. She's by Hello Jim Zane. She won a group three back end of last season. She's got a beautiful pedigree, and she's very talented. So, look, fingers crossed.
Speaker 2We have many in the ready-to-run sale in New Zealand?
Speaker 11We don't sell at the ready-to-runs. We unload all of our yearlings at Karaka. We don't sell at the ready-to-runs. We unload all of our yearlings at Karaka. It's hard to do both things well, and we have a very good consigning bench in New Zealand of ready-to-run bearers, and I think they're best left on their own devices, those guys. They know the market well. It's consistently the best ready-to-run sale in the Southern Hemisphere, that sale, and I've got no reason to believe it won't be another bumper sale this year.
Speaker 2No. I am always great to catch up with you. I definitely haven't lost your number, Henry. I definitely haven't lost it. Are you coming?
Speaker 11Are you coming over?
Speaker 2I don't think we are this year. I don't think we are, but I'll be over there for Karaka Millions in January. Will you? Yeah, I'll be there. We've got a TV camera these days. We're on racing.com, so I think that took us a little ... Yeah, so we couldn't do it for November, but we're doing it for January. So, we'll be there with bells on. But you can watch the sale, I think, on racing.com. So, yeah, we'll be there. I'm looking forward to catching up with a cup of tea and a scone with you.
Speaker 11Well, I'm now in New Zealand. I'm now a New Zealand citizen, so I might give you a rack of lamb and something else to take home.
Speaker 2Beautiful, mate. Thanks very much for your time, as always. Good on you, Gary. He's a great man. What a legend he's been in the Bloodstock game for many a year, Henry Plumtree. Time for a break. Guy Moldcaster will be joining me next.
Speaker 1Good morning, Gareth. How are you today?
Speaker 2I am very well. You sound excited, which has made my day, Captain. You've had a good week?
Speaker 12Well, I mean, we had to put up with a whole lot of buing last weekend, so surely it can't happen two weeks in a row.
Speaker 2I want to ask you about the ready-to-run sales, because it was interesting having a chat to Henry Field there last week, saying that they've changed their business model in a way slightly that they'll be sending four or five horses to their ready-to-run sale, thinking it's an opportunity in the market where they can obviously improve their business. Do you think you'll see more farms doing that?
Speaker 12Yeah, I think, Gareth, when the farms see that these horses make exit at the yearling sales and then they go on to sell very well at the ready-to-run sale, the farms probably can see the fact that they should be doing it rather than giving someone else a profit out of it. So I think in a smaller way for bigger farms, I think it makes sense that they don't have the huge production costs like the man on the street. Mm-hmm. So if they get a good result out of a couple of horses, it's good profit for the year.
Speaker 2Do you think that you will be ... What about from your clientele? Are they asking you to go and try and find horses at the ready-to-run sale, because there is a quicker turnaround?
Speaker 12We'd be sort of looking to be buying at the ready-to-run rather than selling at the ready-to-run, Gareth.
Speaker 2Okay. Most of the clients ... Yeah, I mean buying. Are you getting more interest from your clients to buy horses at the ready-to-run?
Speaker 12We've sent out a bit of a prospect. I'm sure we'll get some interest. We bought a few horses there last year for a couple of clients, but yeah, I think it's definitely a way to go, because you are nearly a year further down the track.
Speaker 2Yes. Yeah, and I think people are becoming ... They want to see their horses race quicker, and buying a yearling, it's expensive, plus it takes a while to get them to the races.
Speaker 12Yeah. Yeah. That's a good point. There's a huge amount of the two-year-old population running before Christmas, and there's not a huge amount of them running until they're three. There's probably ... There's pros and cons for all of it, but I think it's hard enough to get a good horse, but waiting for it's half the battle as well.
Speaker 2Yeah. How do you think the breeding season started, Guy? There's always talk about these horses, the new stallions. Obviously, we'll get to see ... Yeah. ... some first-season stallions, see how they go at the sales when that commences, of course, at the start of next year. So is it a nervous anticipation from these breeders at this time of the year?
Speaker 12I think the sales companies have been around and done their inspections, and they've probably given the farms a pretty good idea of which ones they'd like to take to which sales and that sort of thing, and that sort of settles down over the next month or so. Yeah. So it's been a nervous anticipation. I mean, it's been a nervous anticipation. I mean, it's been a nervous anticipation. I mean, it's been a nervous anticipation. I mean, it's been a nervous anticipation. I mean, it's been a nervous anticipation. I mean, it's been a nervous anticipation. I mean, it's been a nervous anticipation. I mean, it's been a nervous anticipation. It's been a nervous anticipation. It's been a nervous anticipation. It's been a nervous anticipation. It's been a nervous anticipation. It's been a nervous anticipation. It's been a nervous anticipation. It's been a nervous anticipation. It's been a nervous anticipation. It's been a nervous anticipation. It's been a nervous anticipation.
Speaker 2Yeah. It's been a nervous anticipation. It's been a nervous anticipation.
Speaker 12It's been a nervous anticipation. It's been a nervous anticipation. It's been a nervous anticipation. It's been a nervous anticipation. It's been a nervous anticipation.
Speaker 2It's been a nervous anticipation. It's been a nervous anticipation. It's been a nervous anticipation. It's been a nervous anticipation. It's been a nervous anticipation. It's been a nervous anticipation. It's been a nervous anticipation. It's been a nervous anticipation. Yeah. It's been a nervous anticipation. It's been a nervous anticipation. It's been a nervous anticipation. It's been a nervous anticipation. It's been a nervous anticipation.
Speaker 12It's been a nervous anticipation.
Speaker 4It's been a nervous anticipation.
Speaker 12It's been a nervous anticipation. It's been a nervous anticipation. It's been a nervous anticipation. It's been a nervous anticipation. It's been a nervous anticipation. Yeah.
Speaker 4It's been a nervous anticipation.
Speaker 12It's been a nervous anticipation. It's been a nervous anticipation. It's been a nervous anticipation. It's been a nervous anticipation. It's been a nervous anticipation.
Yeah. It's been a nervous anticipation. It's been a nervous anticipation. It's been a nervous anticipation. It's been a nervous anticipation. It's been a nervous anticipation. Yeah. It's been a nervous anticipation. It's been a nervous anticipation. Yeah.
Speaker 1Join the conversation. Text us on 0499 736 736. Live across Australia, this is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 2Ready at Bloodstock with the Captain Guy Moldcaster. Hey, Guy, what do you make of the Everest this year? Obviously, Caring Rising's got a slot in the Hong Kong Jockey Club. They've teamed up with the ATC. Max Whitby, Neil Warrick, Cole Madden, Steve McCann haven't gone with the horse just yet. Chris Waller most likely would be Jolly Star. Godolphin would go with Tempted. Fairway Thoroughbreds have gone with Ninja. Newgate GPI Racing, they tried to go with Headwall. I think Headwall's got a slot. I don't know who it is with. Maybe the tab I'm hearing. That's just the whispers there on the grapevine regarding maybe Headwall getting a slot. But year-long, they've got a couple of opportunities. Paradoxium or maybe Angel Capital. Coolmore, Guesthouse, we'll probably... We'll probably be favourite there. So how do you think these slot holders will go? Do you think that year-long and those big organisations will just try and go with one of their own horses thinking, well, we're not going to beat Caring Rising, but if we go with one of our own horses, at least we'll get the $700,000 back?
Speaker 12Well, I'd say most of the other slot holders would be praying for a typhoon in Hong Kong and the plane can't take off. It'd be the best start. That'd be the best result for most of them, Gareth. But apart from that, I think you're probably right that a lot of them don't really want to do a deal on a horse that can probably only run third or fourth, you know?
Speaker 4Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 12And I mean, it's really good for racing that Caring Rising's coming, but for all the people that have got a slot, I'd say they'd prefer if he didn't come.
Speaker 2Yes, yeah. And it's difficult to negotiate when there's a horse that's going to be as short as a dog. $1.50, $1.40 at the moment in the market. We're a couple of months away from the race like that. What do you make of She's Alibi? She's going to be hard to beat in the Golden Eagle. I know if I owned an Autumn Boy, I'd be going to a Cox Plate. Why would you want to run second to her again, Guy?
Speaker 12I've only run second to her three times, Gareth. So, you know, I mean, but I had a look at his prize money. It's not too bad, Autumn Boy. He seems to keep getting a pretty good check all the time. But yeah, I'd say that, you know, She's Alibi, Autumn Boy probably has got those next few races at her mercy and moods can just pick which way he wants to go with her, you know?
Speaker 2Is it worth more to Autumn Boy if he wins a Golden Eagle or a Cox Plate from a stallion perspective?
Speaker 12It'd probably be worth three times as much to win a Golden Eagle.
Speaker 2Wow. Yeah, explain that for us.
Speaker 12I just think that, you know, people, in Australia looking for sharp horses, you know, he's already won a group one mile. And if he happened to win 1500 against a field like that, I think it'll hold a lot of credence for a stallion, you know, potential.
Speaker 2He's been thrown in at the weights for the Apsum as well.
Speaker 12Oh, what are you, a handicapper now?
Speaker 2Well, I can't believe Wellwritten got 55 and you got 55 and a half.
Speaker 12Well, it's unbeaten. It's a superstar.
Speaker 2Yeah, I know. Who did it beat the other day? Media World. Could even win a Classic. It could even win a Group Three Hawks.
Speaker 12Hey, Gareth, Gareth, the handicappers have been doing this job for a long, long time.
Speaker 2Yeah, I know. You got lucky, Guy.
Speaker 12You know exactly what they're doing.
Speaker 2You got lucky. I'm still, ask Guy what he thinks. I'm still trying to get my head around the Wellwritten jockey decision. I simply can't believe that. Your thoughts, Guy?
Speaker 12What, that Zach Lloyd's riding it?
Speaker 2Yes, yes. No, Matt Cartwright. They can't believe the giddy-up listeners. The majority of them are blowing up saying, it's unfair on Matty Cartwright.
Speaker 12Hey, when they get beaten, the jockeys don't come and help you hose it down afterwards and buy you a cold beer to make you get over it, do they? They just take all the accolades when they win six in a row.
Speaker 2He hasn't got beaten, so he hasn't needed to do that.
Speaker 12He nearly got beaten once.
Speaker 2James from Von Cluser sent through a text message. Has he really? He goes, can you ask Guy, is there any difference trying to identify, a good colt or a good filly at a sale?
Speaker 12Well, I mean, you buy colts for some people, you buy fillies for other people. I don't know where he's trying to get with this sort of angle.
Speaker 2But there's no, there's like, I guess like if it's, is there a difference picking a good athlete that's a filly and a good athlete that's a colt, basically?
Speaker 12Not at all. Not at all, really, Gareth. I think you're looking for the same sort of attributes, really. Yes.
Speaker 2Have you got a captain's pick for us, Guy?
Speaker 12I'm sort of, I'm sort of leaning towards Lindemann. I think that... Whereabouts? In Caulfield.
Speaker 2Okay, there you go. Well, do you know something we don't? We had Chris on today and he said it's still 50-50, but you would know.
Speaker 12No, I don't know. I've got no idea. I just thought that that would be the race for him.
Speaker 2Yeah, I reckon he'd be hard to beat at Caulfield as well. It looks a lovely race for him.
Speaker 12Well, he was $6 about two hours ago. Now he's $4.40 with sports bet, but I don't know.
Speaker 2There's only maybe four or five, maybe six in the Underwood Stakes and five in the Seven Stakes. So there'll be small fields in both of those feature races there on Saturday.
Speaker 12But they'll be very good races all the same, Gareth.
Speaker 2Yeah, and they're going to be interesting from a tactical point of view as well. So I'm looking forward to seeing all of them. It's great to see the champs. And then I think Lindemann's going to be hard to beat if he comes to Caulfield. Blake Shin booked a ride. And he'll just lead, walk, and win, I reckon, basically.
Speaker 12Yeah, yeah, you'd think so. You'd think he'd be hard enough to beat, I would have thought. And, like, looking at the other horses in the market, like, there's not that many horses that are going to go and put too much pressure on them, are they?
Speaker 2No, like Buckaroo and Birdman can't. Eliana's probably going to stay in Sydney. Bob doesn't like his horses ridden on speed, really, in Cosmic Crusader. So Pinstripe looks like it's going to go around the Underwood Stake. So he might go forward stepping up in trip. But, yeah, it'll be an interesting race. But I can just see Lindemann walking out in front and sprinting too quickly for opposition. Who's the best three-year-old in the land?
Speaker 12Well, we've got a lot of water to go under the bridge before we start worrying about that one, Gareth. We had the heat.
Speaker 2I had to apologise. Should I jump off? Should I jump off Central Europe?
Speaker 12You know, it's going to be pretty open from here on in.
Speaker 2Yeah. Should I jump off Central Europe?
Speaker 12No. Beautiful. Why would you do that?
Speaker 2Because I've been bullish on him and he can't run a place for me. But I'll stick that with him.
Speaker 12That's only the peer pressure getting to you, Gareth. It's all these experts, the so-called experts, picking on you, Gareth.
Speaker 2Do you know what I hope? I hope he goes to the front in a gold. It's like Frankel did. Just let him run.
Speaker 12Won't happen, Gareth. Well, that should happen.
Speaker 2Won't happen. Just let him run. Like pride of Jenny. Like pride of Jenny. Just say, all right then, son, let's go.
Speaker 12There's no room for leaders when you've got war woven there.
Speaker 2Yes. Well, there we go. It's going to be a fascinating golden rose. We'll see you in Melbourne one day, hopefully anyway, Guy. Take care, Gareth. Have you got any international horses that you purchased?
Speaker 12We're working on one. At the moment, one's nearly done, but it's not a high-profile horse, but we'll just take it through the system and see where it ends up.
Speaker 2Always a pleasure, Guy. You have a great day, Gareth. Same. There's Guy Malcaster. Safi Oldsman's about to join me straight after this. The history maker after, of course, she won the English Saint Ledger there on Saturday. She became the first female jockey to do that, and it's 250-year history, and that was her first group one as well. So I'm looking forward to you hearing that chat, that I recorded a little earlier this morning with Safi Oldsman, and we'll have that interview for you next year on Giddy Up.
Speaker 1Join the conversation. Text us on 0499 736 736. Live across Australia, this is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 13About five legs splitting them all, and it's Highwaymen who now takes the lead, and Saladus towards the outside. Amelia Harehart is right. On the inside, Hattin, Rebel Rocker is trying to rally. Galleon still has a chance, and they're now towards the final furlong. It is Safi Oldsman and Highwayman. He's out in front by two lengths to Enceladus in second. They have now gone clear. Highwayman has got the lead. Another 100 yards to go. History is made in the 250th Saint Ledger, and Safi Oldsman is a classic winning rider. Highwayman wins in a 1-2 for Joseph O'Brien.
Speaker 2It's the moment English racing, in fact, world racing, won't ever forget. That was Highwayman winning the 250th running of the English Saint Ledger, and it was ridden by Safi Oldsman for Joseph O'Brien, and Safi won her first group one, but she created history in doing that because she'd become the first female jockey to win a classic in England, and it was quite amazing being the 250th running, of course, of the English Saint Ledger, and Safi, she stayed up for us on this Monday night over there in the, the UK to talk to us here on Giddyups. So we really do appreciate it, Safi. Congratulations, first of all. Every time I go onto my social media, I see you. I don't know how many interviews you've done in the last 48 hours.
Speaker 14Yeah, there's been plenty. Yeah, it's been slightly mental, to be honest. Yeah, I can't really believe it.
Speaker 2So tell us, like talk us through the week then. When did you realise that you had a ride in an English state ledger?
Speaker 14Sort of our entries, sort of confirmations and stuff for Saturday get done on Monday and I was booked on him on Monday afternoon and it was quite funny because I had to sort of got a phone call from a journalist on Monday morning saying, like talking about my rides for the St. Ledger Festival and they were like, obviously you'll be excited for the St. Ledger 250 years and I think I said something like, oh yeah, you know, it's nice. You know, I obviously don't have a ride in the race, but it'll be nice to watch it. It's going to be a great race and all this stuff. So when that article came out on Wednesday, I looked a bit silly.
Speaker 2And then did Jasek give you a call? How did all that work?
Speaker 14No, like we obviously on our sort of booking system, you just have like all your rides that your agents booked and all this stuff and I just suddenly saw it appear on Monday afternoon and I looked at it and I was like, I think that horse is in the St. Ledger and I clicked on the race and I thought, Jesus. It actually has quite a good chance in the St. Ledger. So it was a bit of a shock, but obviously Dylan Brown at Monaco is off injured at the moment. And Joseph has a lot of jockeys, but it was Irish Champions Weekend as well. So most of his jockeys were over in Ireland. So, yeah, a lot of, I suppose a lot of stars had to align for me to even get on the horse. But yeah, it was firstly a real honour to get such a good ride for Joseph. But then to sort of win a St. Ledger was pretty magical.
Speaker 2So talk us through the race, or even before the race. When did you start to believe that, geez, I can actually win this?
Speaker 14He just got into a really beautiful rhythm and I was probably further forward in the field than I thought I was going to be. I thought sort of he's a very lightly raced horse that has stepped up the levels very quickly and it was his first sort of shot at the top level. And I think maybe my one concern might be he might be sort of a bit inexperienced for it or a bit green and I kind of got, I got to sort of two poles, sorry, the 400 or whatever you guys say. Very good.
Speaker 4Thank you, Cathy.
Speaker 14Very good. The four, I got to the 400 and I suddenly thought, God, should I take another pull? And I thought this is not exactly where I was expecting to be, sort of cantering down to the 400 thinking I've actually got a proper shot here, but I knew I had some very good horses still tracking me through the race and the one thing I knew he would do was stay. And he saw it out very well. There was a sort of a slight moment where I thought Joseph's other horse was going to come to beat me and sort of came to my quarters and then he very quickly disappeared. And I thought, oh my God, like I think there was some more sort of explicit words going through my head at that point. But yeah, it was sort of once he went over the line, it was a fairly sort of out of body experience. I think British classics, group ones in this country. This country is so hard to come by and especially our classics, like there's five of them every year and I kind of, you dream of winning one, but whether you actually believe that that's going to be reality is hard and yeah, I kind of always thought like if I ride for the next 10 years, I thought, well, I've got another 50 shots that we're trying to sort of win one. But yeah, I didn't expect it to be this year.
Speaker 2Yeah. And so like 48 hours, basically nearly after the... After winning a Saint Leger, can you remember that feeling? Like you just mentioned it was an out of body feeling, but like, was it a, but that 24 hours after, just describe that when you do something like that, that's so great.
Speaker 14Yeah, I felt pretty sort of overwhelmed by the response from it really. I just kind of, I woke up on Sunday morning and I had 421 missed, sort of unread WhatsApps and I didn't really... I didn't know what to do, but yeah, like we're literally at this time of year, the whole way from sort of March till the end of October, we're racing sort of seven days a week. So I was straight back to sort of Doncaster on Sunday and then Windsor today and then Yarmouth tomorrow. So it keeps moving fairly quickly. It doesn't really give you a chance to really sit and reflect on it all. But no, I was quite happy to have a winner today because I hadn't ridden a winner on Sunday. I managed to win on my last ride today and that was a bit of a relief to sort of get the monkey off your back.
Speaker 2And it's, I guess when, when something like this happens, I was listening to an interview with your father, Jamie Osman, and he was mentioning that you've been ambitious throughout your life. This is always something that you wanted to do. You could have been a superstar at eventing, but you decided to be a jockey and you've always had these ambitions and dreams and I don't know if he was saying that you probably had these expectations that you, you think that you had the ability to do what you did there on, on Saturday. So when that all happens, like, is it relief? Are you proud? Is it, you're wanting more? Can you describe that for us?
Speaker 14Yeah, I think, I think when you sort of, and you're a kid that's grown up in racing and you just, I was obsessed with it from a really young age. And you have these dreams of riding group one winners and classic winners and all this stuff. But it kind of feels really far out of reach a lot of the time because like over here the sport is so dominated by the sort of the powerhouses of Coolmore, Godolphin and Juddmont and other big firms like that and now sort of Wasteland as well that it's, unless you have one of those big jobs, like it's, it's quite hard to sort of know when that next big opportunity is going to come from. And yeah, it was quite surreal, like, to sort of not have had a ride in the St. Ledger on Monday morning and then sort of a week, sort of five days, six days later, won a British classic and yeah, I can't, yeah, it's kind of hard to sort of put into words really but I always felt like, I think this is sort of my sixth season riding and yeah, if you told me on the sort of first day that I had a ride. That I would have won a British classic, I wouldn't have really believed you, I think. I think, I think one of probably my biggest fears was always looking back on my career when I retire, like I understand that this job isn't forever. It's a really small period of your life that you and I've always tried to sort of remember to enjoy it as much as possible because I really understand that I won't be able to do this forever. I, whatever happens for the rest of my career, I feel like I can always look back on Saturday and feel like it all meant something. I never wanted, I think that was the biggest fear of mine was sort of retiring one day and looking back on my career and thinking I didn't achieve what I wanted to and yeah, a British classic was right at the top of the list so to think of yeah, ticks that one off is yeah, very special.
Speaker 2And we've seen it here in Australia, like Michelle Payne being the first female jockey to win our greatest race. She won the Melbourne Cup and then Jamie Mellon went on to do it and I was at a function the other day with Jamie and she was speaking and she goes, I go to the hair salon and people go, oh, what are you doing? She goes, I'm a jockey and oh, you're the jockey that won the Melbourne Cup. And she can win group ones all around the world. She can win group ones every weekend, but she'll be remembered for winning that Melbourne Cup and the significance of that victory in her career. And I guess it's similar for you in a way because you've become the first female jockey to win an English classic, like no one else can take that away from you now, Zafi.
Speaker 14Yeah, I think that's the thing that's really special is like two best female jockeys and Hayley Turner and Holly Doyle, like they had their first, Hayley was the first woman to win a group one outright in this country and Holly was the first woman to win a European classic in France. And it's one of the things that sort of stick with them for the rest of their lives and it's really special to sort of have my own one. And I suppose in this country, like when I was in Australia, like it was really nice to have so many girls riding whereas in England, there's a few of us but there's not that many like there's so many days where I'm sort of sat in the waiting room and I'm the only girl there. So yeah, I think it means a huge amount. And I try not, I suppose when we're all doing the same job as the as all the guys, it doesn't really feel any different. But I suppose when you actually take a sort of step back and look at it all that it actually it really does mean something.
Speaker 2And I think it's a level playing field. That's what makes racing so great that you can have females and males compete on 11 playing field at the highest level. But that victory that you achieved there on on Saturday, I would imagine that now that you'll be able to inspire. I think it's a new generation, hopefully, of young girls that want to get into the sport to that want to be the next. Steffi Osborne or Holly Doyle now?
Speaker 14- Yeah, I suppose that I've never set out to sort of be a role model for anyone. I do the sport and I do my job because I love it. And if I can inspire anyone else to do it, then that's a real honor and an added bonus because even sort of on Sunday when I was back at Doncaster and they have sort of family fun day at Doncaster on the Sunday and there was so many sort of little girls there and they all sort of come up to you and tell you they wanted to be a jockey and it's really sweet and yeah, it kind of, it means a lot because I was one of those kids at one point, like I was one of those kids going to the races when I was tiny asking sort of Hayley Turner for her autograph and stuff like that. So yeah, it's a real sort of full circle moment.
Speaker 2- Yeah, was there a couple of special people that when you got your first, the phone that really put a smile on your face when you got their text messages or WhatsApp or was it just too overwhelming when your phone was just going off after that victory?
Speaker 14- No, it was really nice. I'd like obviously spoke to mum and dad and some of my family, but obviously spoke to Sam. I know what you're getting at, but yeah,
Speaker 2I spoke to Sam in Australia and. - Your beautiful, your beautiful boyfriend. - He's Sam Kavanagh, of course, the CEO of Kiramar Racing and he does a wonderful job here in Australia, but I guess I think he wish he was at Doncaster that day as well.
Speaker 14- Yeah, I suppose so, you might have to ask him that, but yeah, Doncaster's a long way from Melbourne, but no, it was really special. Like I rang him and he obviously sort of stayed up to, he got up to sort of watch the race, which was really nice. And yeah, he kept, he sort of, I spoke to him a couple of hours afterwards and he said, "I can't get back to sleep." And I was like, the adrenaline was sort of pumping around my body and I think he was a bit the same.
Speaker 2- You can't fight love, Safi. Now, highway man, Joseph O'Brien is going to the Melbourne Cup with him. I was having a chat to Kevin Blake, he's racing manager last night. Now, if he doesn't get Dylan's way, you're his rider in a Melbourne Cup. Now. I think the weight's come out this week. If he, so I think we're wanting what, 54 and a half. That will, that will do it, won't it, for you? That if he gets that weight. - Yeah, that would do it, see. - He's your ride in the Melbourne Cup.
Speaker 14- Yeah, wouldn't that be great? Come on, Racing Victoria, give him 54 and a half.
Speaker 2- Imagine all of the publicity that you'll get if you come out to ride highway, man.
Speaker 14- Oh, think of all the publicity Racing Victoria will get. - Yeah, that's what I mean.
Speaker 2A hundred percent, and so that would be like, I know that you're coming out to ride in the Golden Eagle. There's a strong possibility you're gonna be riding Amazing Journey, who's trained by Kira Ma, that was formerly trained by your father, that they paid big money for. But the Melbourne Cup, I guess that would be a race that you would love to win as well, like everyone else in the world.
Speaker 14- Yeah, everyone wants to win a Melbourne Cup. I was, I was actually sort of, I was injured. And during the sort of Melbourne Cup carnival last year, and I was sort of hobbling around on crutches next to Sam. And it was an amazing day to watch. Like it was, I actually went to sort of every day of the, at Flemington and it was, it was amazing. And they put on such a great show and it was a brilliant atmosphere to be a part of. And I'd quite like to have a ride in it this year.
Speaker 2- And so like, could he win a Melbourne Cup, highway man? Like what kind of feel did he actually give you there on Saturday?
Speaker 14- A pretty good one to sort of win a British classic. He's obviously a pretty good horse, but no, like I haven't won a Melbourne Cup, so I don't know what it takes to win one.
Speaker 2- I think he's a great chance.
Speaker 14- Yeah, I agree. He's, he's a very unexposed horse that is, all he's done has improved through his career. He's very straightforward, got a very good mind on him, which will obviously stand him in good stead in a race that has sort of so much build up to it. And yeah, he's, I would obviously, I don't know him very well. I only met him for 10, sort of 10, 15 minutes, but yeah, he's, yeah, I couldn't see why he wouldn't go there
Speaker 2with a seriously good chance. - It's amazing in this beautiful game of ours is that you can have an animal that changes your life and you only spend 10 or 15 minutes with him and then you say, see you later, but thank you very much.
Speaker 14- Yeah, it was quite funny. I was doing an interview afterwards and they said, would you obviously, you'd obviously love to ride Highwayman in the Melbourne Cup? I said, well, yes, obviously I would, but you know, if I never see him again, I'll love him forever.
Speaker 2- And you'll probably have to go and see him again. You'll, I guess when this is all finished, it's go to Ireland and say, Joseph, where is he? And have a glass of champagne with him because that will, yeah, he'll be a special, like he goes down in history as well as the horse that helped Safi Osman become the first female jockey to win an English classic. So that's exciting, amazing journey. It's a horse that, it's a beautiful name now with the story that you've just produced over the last couple of days, but this horse is heading to Australia, trained by Kira Marr, formerly trained by your father. They paid, well, probably-
Speaker 14- I know him very well.
Speaker 2- Yeah, you know him very well. They paid probably, probably, probably, probably, probably, half of Sam Kavanagh's salary there at Kira Marr Racing for this horse. So that's a lot of money. And he comes to Australia and Will Bourne says, "He's never really purchased a horse "to finish second in a race." And that's what they'll be trying to do in a Golden Eagle. Obviously, she's alibi as a horse that dominates our markets, but how good is amazing journey? And describe him for us here in Australia.
Speaker 14- Well, obviously, she's alibi as an absolute monster, but no, he's a very good horse. He was pretty immature as a two-year-old. He took a sort of a while to really find his feet and it wasn't until sort of this year that he really sort of showed what he was capable of. He won a very sort of competitive handicap at Ascot and then went on to win a heritage handicap on King George Day and really showed his class that day. He's a really good-looking horse. He's only gonna improve. I think he'll suit Australian racing. He beat a horse that day that went on to win a stakes race, two starts afterwards of haggisers that they think very highly of. I think he'll be, he's very versatile trip-wise. He can go anywhere between sort of six furlongs and a mile. So no, he's a really cool horse. And if he was gonna have to leave Dad's, I'm glad he's going to Kieran's.
Speaker 2- Yeah. Like, were you sad to lose him? And obviously when you realise that Wil Bourne is trying to buy this horse, who works for Kieran Marr as their bloodstock man, like did he make you do the deal or how did it come across? So then like, I guess that you would've made sure that you'd be riding this horse at a Golden Eagle if the deal did go ahead.
Speaker 14- Yeah, well, yeah, Sam actually was there one day that he won sort of only on the all-weather at Kempton on his sort of first, second start of this year. And he said, that looks quite nice. And I think I said something to him like, yeah, don't you dare try and buy him or something like that. And then three stars later, he's on his way to Australia. So I was like, I wasn't very happy with him that day, but no, it's a good result sort of for everyone. And no, he wasn't an expensive yearling. He was, I think he was a 30 grand yearling. So to get a good return on him was brilliant and for his owners. And yeah, hopefully he goes on to do very good things in Australia. I think he'll suit it down there.
Speaker 2- Yeah, I think he's around $26 or something like that with Bet365. So he's a horse that they respect in the market. Obviously, she's alibi dominates that Golden Eagle market at $1.66 at the moment. Is he in training? Is that David Eustace's place or is he in, when does he go into quarantine?
Speaker 14- Yeah, I think I'm not 100% sure. I'd have to ask him, but I think he's, he's at Harry Eustace's in Newmarket 'cause most of their horses go there once they purchase them and he'll obviously be in quarantine and then shipping down there soon, I presume.
Speaker 2- Well, sensational, Safi. We're so happy for you. And when do you come to Australia? And is it just before Australia? Is it just before the Golden Eagle or will you be here a little earlier than that?
Speaker 14- I'm not sure yet. Our sort of champion's day, which is the final day of the sort of official flat season in England is on the 18th of October or something like that. So yeah, sometime after then.
Speaker 2- And when are you going to tell Sam and give him the ultimatum, basically? Love with Safi or who are you going to choose, Safi or Kieran? So when do you have to make that ultimatum to him?
Speaker 14- I don't want to ask that question. I don't think I know what the answer would be.
Speaker 2- I reckon after you win the English Saint Ledger, he's definitely moving to the UK because you're going to make all of the money now. There's no doubt about that. Poor Kieran's going to lose out. But we're so happy to have you here. I'm so happy for you, I think you're great for the game, Safi. But your authenticity after that race and I've listened to a few of your interviews and the way that you represent this game that we love, I think it's important that we have ambassadors like you and you should be super proud and we look forward to seeing you in Australia. And hopefully the handicap is nice to you and Highwayman gets your weight. Please. And if he doesn't get your weight, I reckon Joseph's going to have about five or six in it, surely. If you win a Saint Ledger for him, you'll be able to get a ride.
Speaker 14You're making me get a bit red now.
Speaker 2Yeah, or Sam or Kieran will have a ride for you. Anyway, so you'll have a ride in the Melbourne Cup. We'll make sure of that here on Giddy Up.
Speaker 14Thanks, that's very kind.
Speaker 2Good on you, Safi. Thanks for staying up with us and you can go and do some washing now and eat some dinner. Thank you very much. Thank you. Thanks, Gareth. What a bloody superstar she is. That's Safi Osborne, the first ever female jock to win an English Saint Ledger there on Saturday. We're going to take a break and we're going to come back with plenty more on this Tuesday morning. This is Giddy Up, all thanks to Bet365.
Speaker 1Join the conversation. Text us on 0499 736 736. Live across Australia, this is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall. On Giddy Up, it's now time for the Midweek Masterclass.
Speaker 2It is now time for the Midweek Masterclass. It is now time for the Midweek Masterclass. It is now time for the Midweek Masterclass. It is now time for the Midweek Masterclass. It is now time for the Midweek Masterclass. And we'll try and find you some winners on a Wednesday afternoon. And Mark Roden joins us. We're at Canterbury tomorrow in New South Wales. And it's a good little program there at Canterbury. And just having a look at the conditions. We're on a good four rails true. Hello to you, Mark.
Speaker 15Hello, Gareth. How are you this morning?
Speaker 2Good, thank you, mate. What are we trying to do from a punting perspective tomorrow?
Speaker 15It's not a bad meeting. Some of the races are a bit tricky because they've got big fields at the moment with emergencies. So we won't actually know what they look like. Until tomorrow morning. But, yeah, I think there's a couple of winners there.
Speaker 2Where do we start with your place?
Speaker 15Starting race three, the 1900 metre race of the day, Benchmark 72. I like number one, Dorados. It went up clear favourite in the first markets that came out on this race. And it's been replaced now by number three, Standard Deviation. But I agree with the original processes on this one. I think it brings clearly the best form into this race. He won here over 15.50 two starts ago, an aggressive front-running ride from Zach Lloyd. And then he... They took him to a set-day race, and he was even more aggressively ridden. And it almost worked. It worked. He was just run down in line by a proxima day there. Look, I think that's easily the strongest lead-up form in this race. I can't explain the drift at this stage. That back thing's like, well, Standard Deviation looks on the up. I can make a case for it. Supreme Sovereign's been 18 to 480. I couldn't take it. That's $10, to be honest. I don't know what that's about.
Speaker 4OK.
Speaker 15So I think, just with the money for the others, we're getting a good price for Ardis. He's in great form. He'll be leading. He's got Nash on. He looks a nice bit.
Speaker 2Perfect set-up there. Nash on a leader at Canterbury. Race three, number one. What else have you got for us, mate?
Speaker 15On to the last, another one that will be either leading or very close to it. Also been a bit easy in early markets, too. This is number five, Cobra Club. But look, on paper, been disappointing at last two, after a big win at Illawarra Grange on the inner track there. I think the key to it might be a good four. It's never run a place on anything worse than a good four. His last two starts... They've been on softer ground. And he's won two and been placed three times on good tracks. So I think that's the key, or I hope it is anyway. Again, it's Jay and Adrian, T. Clark on a leader, you know, just as good as Nash for mine. I think he'll be very hard to beat. The interesting runner is the stable mate who's sick in emergency, 14, Savvy Spy. It's the main danger if it gets a run, I think. But as it stands and with a certainty to get a run, I'm pretty happy with number five, Cobra Club.
Speaker 2Beautiful. So race three, number one. Race seven, number four. Five, your place there at Canterbury. Just from a putting perspective. And so for horse drifts, after you really like it as soon as the market goes up, is there any philosophy that you have regarding that? Or would you be more concerned if it's drifting, say, two minutes out before they jump?
Speaker 15Yeah, definitely. The last two-minute market over the, you know, over the 12 months is going to be pretty accurate and hard to beat. You know, not in every... Just because something drifts doesn't mean it's not going to win. That's not true. But the early market, you know, people can't get on for as much. They're much more reactive because they're not settled. They're going to be a lot more volatile. But the last two minutes, they really do settle down.
Speaker 2Good on you, Mark. Thanks for that, mate. We appreciate it as always.
Speaker 15No worries. Talk soon.
Speaker 2There's Mark Roden there. Chris Nelson joins us. We're racing at Doobin, back at Doobin on a Wednesday afternoon. Just having a look at the conditions there. We're on a soft five, rails out six metres. At Doobin on a Wednesday afternoon. You can check out racingqueensland.com.au for where Queensland is racing today. Hello, Chris.
Speaker 16Good morning to you, Gareth. I would say that you'll be looking at a good four because it's a beautiful day tomorrow. Today, mid-20s and partly cloudy mid-20s tomorrow too.
Speaker 2Had a great chat with Bella Youngberry. Gee, she's an impressive young lady.
Speaker 16Yeah. Yeah. She's great to chat to. She's very polite. Very respectful. Obviously, being brought up very well, Gareth. Yeah, she's a lovely girl and getting the results of hard work. I was reading something the other day about her that, well, she might have told you. I didn't hear it earlier, but all her friends went to formal end of school and she didn't. She went to track work the next morning.
Speaker 4Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 16No, she wasn't worried. So she's driven and she's certainly getting the results. So good on you, Bella.
Speaker 2What are we doing at Doobin tomorrow?
Speaker 16Race two, horse number nine, Cedrella, for Kelly Schweder and Ron Stewart. Now, I liked the second at the Gold Coast last time. I put the blinkers on this one and he reacted. He was very strong in the lead and ran them along at a good tempo. He gave plenty down the straight. He was run over by Agadou very, very late, right on the line. Now, Agadou, we know he's been racing well in these maidens midweek, so the class doesn't worry me at all. Back 50 metres, good gait. I think you'll find Cedrella will be a lot harder to get past this time around.
Speaker 2Race two, number nine.
Speaker 16Yeah, race three. Now, the obvious here is number nine, Fluorescence, or Fluorescence from Heathrow. He's a great coach, stable, who ran well on debut, but do you know I like this trial at number two, Mellor Magic from the Golan Stable. Ben Thompson will ride. First starter, one of the damn Mellor Sun won a Blue Diamond Prelude back in 2012. He cost $130,000 at the Magic Lid in sales 2025. He's had two trials. The first of those, he beat Pierontes, who was super impressive, winning at Sunshine Coast on last Friday night. And the second trial, he got back and he ran on very well. To almost nail Wilco, who is number five in this race tomorrow. He was going a lot better than Wilco. He's just really impressed me at the trials, this guy. So we're going to have something on him. Race three, number two, Mellor Magic. And race eight, sports number six, Don't Ya Lover. Last couple of runs have been very good. She hasn't had much go her way. She's finished second and third. She draws gate one tomorrow for Ben Thompson. So, look, hopefully she can kick up, find a spot. And if there's a gap there, I think she's a big chance. And to taking that gap and winning the race. She's only lightly raced. She probably should have almost won at least one of those two runs this prep. She gets her chance to break through. So race eight, number six, Don't Ya Lover.
Speaker 2So race eight, number six. I've only got seven races at Doobin tomorrow.
Speaker 16Sorry, race seven, number six. That's my mistake. That is just habit. That's all that is.
Speaker 2No, I'm thinking maybe they haven't put this race up on Riser, but that wouldn't make sense. So, Don't Ya Lover. We'll be loving her tomorrow. She can get the job. Done. And hopefully, Benny Thompson, more importantly, can have a big day. He's already four behind Bella Youngberry. So, he might need to have a big day.
Speaker 16He's going to have to chase pretty hard. That's for sure. It could be very interesting. So, he'll be all out to close that gap. And Bella will be all out to extend it.
Speaker 2Good on you, mate. Thanks, Chris. Thanks, guys. Cheers. We're going to continue on the midweek masterclass next. Myles Fitzner to join me.
Speaker 1Join the conversation. Text us on 0499-777. 736-736. Live across Australia. This is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 2Welcome back to Giddy Up. We're in Victoria at Caulfield tomorrow for our Metro Wednesday meeting. We're on the heat track there at Caulfield. So, Sandown's having a well-earned break. We won't be racing at Sandown for five or six weeks now. And just having a look at the conditions there on the heat track there tomorrow. At the moment, we're on a good four rails true. And Myles Fitzner joins us here on Giddy Up. Milo, hello. Hello to you.
Speaker 17Hello to you, Gareth. And hello to the listeners.
Speaker 2What are your early plays here at Caulfield tomorrow?
Speaker 17Well, look, it's going to be a tricky little day. And that's dependent on how much rain we get from pretty well about midday today through till midnight tonight. Now, I'm not sure if a few people have seen the radar. But there's some sort of real patchy, sort of almost thunderstormy type clouds going over. Some heading south. But I think Geelong's copping a little bit at the moment. So. So, hopefully, if Caulfield avoids that, I've done it for a good four. And thinking that horses that play up on speed or that are in the first few are going to be advantaged. We're going to start in race number four. Now, saying that, I'm expecting it to play pretty quick. We're going to start with a value play in race number four. Now, there looks to be a stack of speed here with Hurricane Girl, Capital Affairs, Superbeck, Egyptian Dancer, and Tuzamak for Race Goodwin. All looking to roll forward. The horses. So I want to be with this number $8. horse that's had Tommy Stockdale on its last couple of starts but if you go back it's been in and around blind race that form stacked up again in the Derry McKenzie Royal Tenenbaum these sort of horses so I think this horse can sort of suck box seat maybe get a run at around the $9.50 mark so I'm just going to have a little tiny each way bet there on Nyla in race number four that is horse number eight we're going to move further down the card we'll go to our best bet at Caulfield and this is quite comfortably the best on the card I think this is really the only crack I'm going to have for the day that's race six number 11 Cabriol now pretty happy to back this horse Mark Zara on pretty handy record should get to the front there or thereabouts saw what it did to them at sale in the 66 there and at Geelong before that in a mate and it came to Caulfield hit heavy eight conditions but ran in behind choir point and the high on the hill still carried 57 kilos the others carried 52 and a half 54 the lightweight's got away with it on a wet deck that day so I think Cabriol can get it done in a 78 there and get it done comfortably that's easily the best bet on the card and then if we're still playing on speed and sort of on a good enough sort of deck I'm happy to go with Electric Elvis at hopefully an each way quote in the last now I know it's drawn wide this is race eight number two for Reese Goodwin and Damien Lane it gets to 61 and a half kilos it'll come in a couple of gates to close enough to 15 hopefully 14 and can roll across and sit somewhere sort of outside leader maybe this horse has been going pretty well if you go back through the form the way that Bendigo was very good second at 10 down before that behind Miss Lola and the second at Bendigo behind Visible Magic I mean it was $1.35 that day and just didn't quite get the favors from Gabby and I think it's going to be a good day for Cabriol to get the job done late so that's it around the five or six dollar mark with bet 365 so really only having one major bet race six number 11 Cabriol and then I'm going to have two each way nibbles race four number eight Nyla and then if we've got some money race eight number two Electric Elvis on a very very tricky day at the Caulfield Heath and especially dependent on what happens with some of these sort of pockety rain systems that are coming through over the next
Speaker 212 hours we had an interesting text you sent me through a text regarding the jockey change there
Speaker 17for well written your opinion on that Milo well I can't believe that it's um even being discussed I mean you've got a guy that's uh in Zach Lloyd that's going around at 28 percent his last 50 rides 20 percent his last 12 months in one of the toughest jockey jurisdictions anywhere in the world against a jockey that goes at 12 and a half percent his last season uh just recently yep he's striking at 24 percent but this is in a far far lesser competitive uh environment uh it's a complete no-brainer um I'm not even sure why it's a question that that you're taking Matty Cartwright off and putting Zach Lloyd on um now full credit to Matty Cartwright he's done a magnificent job and he'll get there and you know what he'll get another turn but you've got arguably one of the the most informed jockeys in Australia in Zach Lloyd uh going aboard and that's what you've got to do with these sort of horses when you bring them over from New Zealand because let's face it really she's beat up on Alabama Lash and a few others she's got to come here and and go to another level and um you'd want the best pilot on and so outside of him and probably a few others up there um I mean J-Mac's not going to get on it but um yeah Zach Lloyd's a great choice so I just can't even believe it's a discussion yeah it just fires
Speaker 2up a lot of the punters as well when that happens it always does and it always will but um it's when you explain it like that it is a decision that you can um fully understand why you long have gone down that path Milo as always we'll catch up with you next week but
Speaker 17we appreciate you coming on Giddy Up no dramas mate hopefully you had a few winners out of last week's Wednesday Gareth quite a profitable day yeah we'll go and get them tomorrow Milo
Speaker 2um Lincoln Moore joins us Balaclava Cup Day thanks to Racing SA Lincoln what are your early plays there at Balaclava tomorrow on Cup Day uh morning Gareth I'm hoping you're doing well
Speaker 18I'm hoping we can get it early I guess uh every all eyes will be very uh I guess weary of the track in race one obviously we haven't raced at Balaclava for about six weeks now um well conditions are going to be great up there for Cup Day which is good but I thought in race one number four the obvious child was a horse who put the riding on the wall with a really good debut at Murray Bridge probably gave the winner sidebar five lengths on the corner really motor laid was beaten tick over half length and rises to the 1400 meters here so if they can uh make a bit of ground which I think uh will be obviously uh you know crucial to this horse's chances it's a horse with a lot of talent I think he can win the first that's race one number four the obvious child and then the other horse I think gets its chance on Cup Day is race 10 number four Uptown Monk uh one for the Will Clark and Stable he's got a very strong hand there Will Clark and Charlotte Torby tomorrow and Uptown Monk's the horse that's always promised a lot look he looked like a very smart horse when he uh whacked the field when he's made and then was tried in better races he's had two runs back I think he's ready to ready to peak here on uh on Wednesday and from that good gate Kayla Crowther will be able to potentially just put him up somewhere near the speed and I think he'd be very hard to beat in the last so we're going to try and bookend it race one number four the obvious child and then race 10 at number four Uptown Monk and I think Will Clark and Charlotte Torby can win the uh Balaclava Cup with Sakala Jamie Mellon obviously coming over to South Australia for the big day she's uh hasn't won the Balaclava Cup as yet but I think he can uh he's got a very strong hand there Will Clark and Charlotte Torby that'll all change tomorrow because Sakala's form's really good and I think it's the right form for the race the Mr. Leo McDonald stakes obviously the winner bootlegger draws a wide gate he's going to need a bit of luck aerosol's probably the danger of horse racing really really well he just doesn't run bad races aerosol but I just thought Sakala from gate two with the 54 kilos and Jamie Mellon in the saddle would be extremely hard to beat in the cup we know Will loves to win this he's won it a couple of times and wouldn't shock me if uh they they do it again with Sakala because she's a horse certainly with her hoof right on the tip of her tail and uh ready to win again good on you mate thanks for that no worries yeah looking forward that
Speaker 2Balaclava meeting there tomorrow and um yeah we'll have a bit more of a preview of um that particular meeting including the cup tomorrow on Giddy Up um as we continue on the midweek masterclass we've got Matty Reid Launceston night racing back there in Tassie he likes race four number six Royal Detective and race five number five Miss Lyra so four six five five and Matthew French at Belmont he likes race four number five Cheeto and race three number three Joyo so four five and race three number three Tyler Donaldson Aitken will be my special guest next after welcome to the show was

Speaker 2welcome back to Giddy Up Gareth Hall with you we're about to catch up shortly with our next guest who isn't far away looking forward to chatting um with Tyler Donaldson Aitken after welcome to the show um won a black type race there at Flemington on Saturday he's a great story Tyler and he's got this horse flying I thought he was very good there at Goulburn then at his last start and he's come back home to Flemington and um Craig Newark gave him a peach and he sprinted quickly so I wonder if he's going to be able to do that next time he's going to be able to do that I wonder what is next for welcome to the show so Tyler will be joining us then Gary Crispin's a good story he trains admired who is a 10 year old that won at Belmont on Saturday there were two 10 year olds that won in WA admired's last victory was basically this time last year when he paid 150 to one and he paid once again he was a big price there on Saturday so we'll have a chat to Gary we'll find you some winners with bag of tips today and then Matt Isaacs will be joining us the CEO of harness racing Victoria so he'll have a chat to us at around a quarter past 10 as we start facing the breeze a little quarter past 11 I should say as we start facing the breeze a little earlier um this morning Adam Hamilton will join me and there's some big announcements that HRV will be making well they've already made this morning and um the biggest one of them is that they've got another million dollar bonus so leap to fame just missed out on that bonus last year um so you've got to win three leaps and you've got to win three leaps and you've got to win three leaps and you've got to lead up races to the Hunter Cup three country cups and then you've got to win the Hunter Cup and one of those qualifying races for the million dollar bonus is the Shepparton Cup now it was a great race last year I think Kingman was able to win um and get the job done I think it was the Shepparton Cuppy one I'm pretty sure um I stand corrected but I'm pretty sure Kingman won the Shepparton Cup but this year they're going to make it a standing start so standing start for the paces um were basically it was a new chapter HRV signed a few years back and there was only going to be standing start for trotters but the standing starts are back for the paces and it kicks off for in the Shepparton pacing cup so it'll be interesting to see what happens there with the quality of standard bread that will be heading to Shepparton this year under the new conditions so we'll discuss all that with Adam Hamilton and also Matty Isaac straight after 11 o'clock

Speaker 2up gareth hall with you we welcome our friends now listening to us on their local se and turf dial right throughout wa they join our audience on rsnse and trackandracing.com um for our wa listeners out there some news this morning um regarding joker's grin chris waller telling us that unfortunately at 4 30 in the morning when he got all of his updates regarding how the horses were overnight that um joker's grin had a temperature and he's just sent through an email saying that that temperature is caused by maybe a foot abscess so he hasn't ruled out this saturday with joker's grin he says um he's presented with a mildly um elevated temperature this morning it appears to be foot related likely an abscess brewing you in his hind foot and we are endeavoring to get on top of this it is unlikely that he'll race on saturday however we haven't ruled him out just yet dependent on what we find with his foot over the next 24 to 48 hours so he's flying at the moment as chris pointed out to his joker's grin before this setback he's had a few setbacks he just hasn't gone his way since he's headed over to um chris waller's stable so hopefully they can get on top of that foot abscess pretty quickly and we get to see him in the next week or so so that's the update there on joker's grim i'm the superstar wa galloper now with chris waller it's a busy hour coming your way we've got bag of tips not far away gary crispin will join us after he's 10 year old admired one again at a big price at belmont tyler donaldson aiken isn't far away after his galloper welcome to the show was successful there at flemington on saturday we'll find you some winners with a bag of tips maddie isaacs to join us the ceo of harnessedon and chris waller we'll see you in the next week or so to join us the ceo of harness racing victoria he's our special guest alongside adam hamilton for facing the breeze and then we'll finish off facing the breeze with will rickson and patty lee as well so it's a busy final hour it's been a jam-packed show so far if you missed any of it you can subscribe to giddy up with gareth hall with your local podcast subscriber we've had chris waller join us um who joined us from the top we had saffy osborne the history making jockey from the uk she became the first female to ride the harnessed racing victoria on saturday we'll find you some of the winners as well we'll see you in the next week or so and i'll see you in the next episode of racing victoria on saturday we'll see you in the next episode of racing victoria on saturday by winning of course the english saint ledger adam blanco from racing and sports.com was also great henry plumtree from cambridge for breeding and bloodstock along with guy moldcaster and we had our midweek masterclass team as we try and find some early value ahead of the wednesday metropolitan meetings around the country but let's get stuck into our final hour of course giddy up always brought to you by bet365 and let's kick it all off with tyler donaldson um all right we'll see you in the next episode of racing victoria on saturday we'll see you in the so tyler donaldson aiken after welcome to the show was successful there on saturday
Speaker 19then sass appeal who slid out three wide still about a length off the lead but coming on from run harry run poised as well and then aztec ruler welcome to the show down the center from russian meteor limsel toro had a kick at the 250 but sass appeal now let's rip on the outside with run harry run welcome to the show and cafe millennium and code atlantic also coming on big finish sass appeal 100 to go welcome to the show sass party's trying to get through welcome to the show stomped up and what welcome to the show from a
Speaker 2photo it was a big run by welcome to the show took out um that black type race there on saturday at flemington and he's trained by tyler donaldson aiken he joins us now tyler congratulations how about that on saturday good win wasn't it tough horse yes he is a very tough horse um i thought he was very good at goldman were you confident going into that race second up at flemington
Speaker 20i was confident that the race was the correct race it was unconfident that the barrier was was not ideal obviously drawn you know next to the widest so um there's a lot against us there obviously um his run was massive i mean um making up the ground he did in that last uh last couple hundred meters and um and finishing off the way he did was was sort of a testament to how how well he tries and the sort of level of horse he is um but yeah the the barrier better yeah um he was
Speaker 2third up on saturday he was very good first up at the heat track behind fly and then he wasn't far behind just partying the golden cup and then he wins at flemington um he came a long way in a short amount of time last preparation do you think he's
Speaker 20come back better this time around i think he has i mean his first run over 1200 at um the core field where he where he just got beat um i think he showed he sort of he's he's come back from his spell bigger and stronger again and um and improved so um you know going going off his last three runs this prep i think he's a better horse than what he was last prep and um you know the longer spell and and bringing him back now is sort of um has been uh the right move and and i think he's um yeah i think he's going really well what are your plans for him now well the big blue sky target was um i had a couple i mean i was looking at obviously got racing the golden cup you wanted to try and get into the big dance and be eligible for that um coming sixth and not really getting in um based off that run um i think he's a better horse than what he was last prep and um you know the longer run uh we're then sort of looking at you know blue sky hopes being a two rack would be fantastic in a few weeks time yeah um in between now and then looking at a couple different options um you know based off his run on the weekend um there's there's sort of opening up doors as opposed to closing doors obviously so you got some some bigger targets but um we're just sort of you know the horse is pulled up well we just let him let him sort of come through um that last run and and uh yeah we've got a few few plans to try and execute on
Speaker 2do you think you'll be ready to go later in november and early december will he still be up
Speaker 20for it i think so i mean he's he's last prep he had a long prep a little bit of a let up in in between but he's showing that um how we've been able to sort of train him out of a yard i've got two stabs got one on course and then one just off course opposite kieran mars there and i've been able to train him out of two different environments and particularly the the bigger yards seem to suit him mentally and and physically he's very durable so i think he's going to be a good horse for him so you know he maintained a long prep last prep probably a bit bit more of a pressure prep this one yeah so he's a sort of horse you can give him a little bit of a let up bring him back in and and he's pretty much right to go so i think he could sustain a longer prep but um we'll just
Speaker 2sort of see beautiful because you know what we've got a slot i asked that question because giddy up's got a slot the supernova 1400 meters at packet him a million dollar race that would be
Speaker 20right up his alley yeah it would do kind of a cent i mean that was sort of suggested as well so um you're definitely keen to try and do that so i think he's going to be a good horse for him tackle 1400 again um going forward i mean i think judging off his last prep over a mile he was very strong and you know from what froggy had said and and what we'd thought early on i think a mile is shown to be a good distance for him but with his attitude and how he races i'd love to see him over a bit further if he can get 2000 i think it opens up once again another another load of doors and and with his turn of foot if you can race over 2000 with a turn of foot like that you're very
Speaker 2dangerous has he inspired you to get more horses 100 has i mean the
Speaker 20pre-training side of it now sort of acts as a bit of a funnel into the training side you know some clients that um that have horses and don't have a trainer to go to you can can sort of you know they send them through me and a lot of the clients i've broken in for have um have looked to send horses to me to to race and continue on with so um yeah definitely looking for more horses at the moment i'm just at wangaratta i've got four ready to run horses just had a practice day today so we're um we're still going down the trade route as well which is um still a big focus of my business and obviously i'm going to be doing a lot of training and i'm going to be doing a lot of training and i'm going to be doing a lot of training and i'm going to be doing a lot of welcome to the show was a with the next trade horse that didn't um didn't sell at one of the english sales so um picking horses and looking to pick fast horses obviously a focus there you go
Speaker 2well we wish you the best of luck at the ready to run sales which just around the corner those sales are quickly approaching mate but well done with welcome to the show it's been some show for your stable and we appreciate you coming on giddy up once again and look forward to seeing what like it'd be great to see him in a turac mate so we wish you the best of luck going down the trade route as well and we'll see you next time and we'll see you next time and we'll see you next time and we'll see you next time and we'll see you next time and we'll see you next time and um yeah let's hope you can get him to a a turac there in a couple of weeks time what about this performance on saturday at belmonts on the point of the turn they'd straightened up and hannah
Speaker 21fabuki led for home musgrave eternal romance star walker they're coming down the outside with a bc dark looks as well ms verb back behind them searching for a clear run at the 200 mark star walker dark looks have come together dark looks on the outside with a bc dark looks on the outside though goes up gets a neck clear star walker battling back of old admired down the outside the veteran dark looks in front from admired with a big dive on the outside oh did he get there admired has admired got there another 10 year old did he grab it right on the line dark looks it's
Speaker 2a photo some great stories everywhere you looked at belmont two 10 year olds winning in town on a saturday afternoon and what about this horse admired like he's a 10 year old gary crispin does a great job that was his second 70 second start for his sixth win he's earned close to two hundred thousand dollars in prize money but that was his second win in town basically a year apart he sp'd last time he won in town um at about 150 to one i reckon and he's won at 100 to one on saturday and gary crispin his trainer joins us now gary congratulations hopefully you backed him
Speaker 22yeah good morning yeah well i personally don't back anything but uh my wife had a had a tenner each way on it and me son
Speaker 2to one so uh they were pretty happy yeah so were you confident did you have any um did you think that you're any chance there on saturday because the market didn't you go into every race thinking
Speaker 22you're a chance if the pace is right and unfortunately there's been no pace on any of these races they're not running good times and finally they had a bit of pace on a saturday so
Speaker 2it sort of helped us a bit and we got up yeah he just needs a pacemaker basically yeah well we haven't got two of them no um and did you think he got up because dart looks look the winner but lactar romley he threw everything at the old boy and he lifted for
Speaker 22him yeah he done a good job like that um he um no i i probably thought i was i was just wrapped i was going to run a second to be honest um from the grandstand and uh on the angle i'm on i sure couldn't really tell but uh yeah no to get that result uh it's great and you know for an old horse that's you know been through the mill he's he's had a suspensory injury uh probably what three years ago now so to get him back from that uh that was a great feat in itself yeah um so yeah we're pretty wrapped um but you know talking about punters uh saturday night uh no sunday sunday morning was sitting there and i got a phone call from the police yeah and it was a bloke by the name of michael rung me and he said you don't know me he said but i just want to ring up ring you up to thank you and i said what's all he said i backed your horse i said oh no problems well done and he said i've got a gift coming for you a bottle of grange and uh i said oh you don't need to do that but he said no no it's coming my wife told me i had to so there goes the wife again you know yeah yeah he's got a bottle of grange coming over for me and um he said before he got off he said that he he was going pretty bad he was down to his last 500 so he put the lot on and he said he had 250 250 each way so i don't know if it's a story or if it's true but uh yeah that'd be nice to look collect 100 he boosted it he boosted he got 165 for the
Speaker 2boost i think wow that is a great punting story so you've never heard of him he rang you out of the blue and he told you
Speaker 22anyone ring me after all the wins i've had and this bloke just rung me out of the blue and he he thanked me very much and he said um yeah just unbelievable there you go guys i wonder why i backed it there you go yeah i got no idea and especially if you had your last 500 you wouldn't
Speaker 2be doing that well you've got to admire that don't you the brave being brave like that punner was
Speaker 22um yeah and i thought i always send me a bottle of grange over so i googled it yeah and the grain starts from a thousand dollars and i thought geez that's not a bad sling how could you drink how could you drink that how could you open a thousand dollar bottle bottle of wine well there you go
Speaker 2guys well you enjoy it don't give it away um and it's like it's it's unbelievable that he's two victories um basically his last two victories nearly a year apart were both at belmont both over 2200 meters and he's won on both occasions at 100 to one yep yeah that's correct um yeah no
Speaker 22he's been he's been a good little ride yeah and uh you know we we got into it uh i think we paid the four of us got into it there was starkey um there was the gurney peter gurney and carol gurney and tony cummings and myself and uh we picked him out at the sales and we paid 11 000 for him so
Speaker 2it was a good little purchase now well done gas um great story um yeah so happy for you and um what a job you've done with this 10 year old i think it's great it was great for racing at belmont to see two 10 year olds salute there on the weekend and um well under that punter too enjoy their grains gary we appreciate you coming on mate if it comes all right mate no worries there's gary crispin there time for a break we'll find you some winners with bag of tips next

Speaker 25in the team um hello to you adam hamilton g'day gareth looking forward to this um we've uh yeah some exciting news coming up and uh good to have matt isaacs in here with us and the ceo of harness
Speaker 2race victoria maddie isaacs joins us g'day maddie good morning gareth good morning adam and good morning listeners now we touched on a couple of things that we've been talking about in the past yesterday but i want to get another update before we get stuck into the big announcements that you're about to tell us geez there was a nasty fall there at melton on saturday night and um i read out your updates regarding karen manning there and she's got some um serious injuries to her back i think she's still in hospital overnight anyway at our out there um i can't believe mark pitt walked away
Speaker 25and josh duggan was lucky as well yeah it looked it was one of those falls that looked really bad uh and caused quite some disruption on the night and and quite a lot of angst as as we waited for information to come through but Um, you know, remarkably Mark Pitt was okay and ultimately picked up the drive, the winning drive that Karen, um, Karen had to forego, but it's just a, it's just a brutal setback for Karen who she had that nasty fall. Uh, she was saying, Oh, the irony, I fractured the same three vertebrae, but on the other side, three years ago, she missed about two months at that time. Um, and now she's done this side, but I mean, how tough are these people? Like she went home after that and had a sleepless night and thought, Hmm, this might be worse than I first thought. Goes in three fractured vertebrae, T1, T2, T3, I think it is. And, um, and, and one of them was slightly displaced. So, um, no surgery, but no, no, which I mean, look, that's, that's good, isn't it? But it's still, still going to be a significant recovery time and, and in a season where we were really starting to see. Her right back at the forefront in big races like the inter-dominion and, and, you know, presumably she had love me to your favorite trotter to get a board in the next few weeks for the bill Collins and also a trip across to New Zealand, which would look out the window now.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 26Um, Maddie, how was Vic bread night there on Saturday night? No, it was really great. Uh, always a great night to be able to celebrate the up and comers in our industry. Gareth.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 26And we've got the Vic breads, the fields out just yet.
Speaker 25Uh, no, I'll keep checking while we're on, but they'll be out soon for the four-year-old finals. Beautiful. And never been more relevant. These four-year-old finals.
Speaker 2Our horse needs to draw well. She'll win if she draws to lead. Yeah. Yeah. We can confession.
Speaker 25Yes. Yeah. Well, she was absolutely terrific. Um, in the heat, obviously. So, and that's, you know, artist success looks the one to beat obviously, but, um, yeah, it's the barrier draw is going to be crucially important.
Speaker 2I've recruited another, um, um, star jockey to our syndicate there for the, uh, running of the bulls next year.
Speaker 25Who have you got?
Speaker 2Luke Nolan. I never knew his mum. Was born and bred in Birchett. Well, there you go.
Speaker 25There we, and, um, so Luke Nolan and H coffee. Yeah.
Speaker 2No, we're, we're going to take on Harry coffee.
Speaker 25Oh, there you go.
Speaker 2Yeah. I might try and help Harry out with the horse. Cause he like, he, he couldn't get the job done last and he went to him as Stuart and it didn't help him.
Speaker 25So I know, I think the one they had lined up ended up going a miss close to it.
Speaker 2But, uh, um, anyway, Hey Maddie, this is exciting news. So the million dollar mission begins at Victoria cup. That's the headlines there on the website. So the million dollar bonus. Is back.
Speaker 26Yeah. So, uh, yeah, here to announce the summer of glory for, uh, 2027 slash 2028 now. So we've, we've made some changes on the back of last year, which was an incredibly successful event, you know, re-energizing harness racing's key period of great racing through the summer. Uh, we've included the Victoria cup as part of the chase for a million dollars, uh, uh, for pacing. Um, and we've made some changes to some of the, uh, some of the other country cup races as well, uh, with the inclusion of a stand start. At Shepparton. Um, and, uh, and a preferential barrier draw to the sprint race at Bendigo for the Bendigo cup as well.
Speaker 2Okay. So it's going to be difficult to win the million dollar bonus.
Speaker 26We have to make it difficult. Um, we had obviously the trotting, uh, bonus go off last year, um, for half a million dollars. And, uh, we almost had the, uh, pacing one go off by, uh, literally about a half head, uh, with leap to fame, almost winning, which is incredibly exciting. But what that's done is made it incredibly challenging to ensure these types of races and the types of promotions and, uh, the insurance markets, not just about ensuring, you know, these types of races. It's part of, I guess, the overall risk profile of insurance companies through whatever's happening in the world. And there's been, uh, a few big bills that insurance companies are facing, particularly through, uh, those fires that, uh, have happened in LA, you know, over 12 months ago now.
Speaker 25I think the other important thing here is the fact that, um, there was a little confusion last year that it was in fact, insured HRV wasn't just putting up the money for it. And that's what made it. That's what made it doable last year, obviously. So yeah, totally get that. So Keyang Zahara winning means that it's, it would have been outrageously expensive to bring the trotting one back.
Speaker 26So last year, uh, last year we, we were able to get, uh, a very economical, uh, underwriting of, um, of the program, uh, you know, with obviously both the pacing and the trotting this year will only be for pacing. And as I've said, we've introduced a number of different, different, uh, elements into the, uh, into the equation to. You know, not just bring excitement, but also make it just that little bit more challenging and ensure that we can get this underwritten. Uh, but sadly, um, you know, with the success of Keyang Zahara, and if you like the dominance of Keyang Zahara, it means that this year, uh, there'll be no trotting option.
Speaker 2I don't think you'll be even here. Keyang Zahara during the summer.
Speaker 25No, but the insurance companies don't know that. That's a problem. They'll think there's another Keyang Zahara coming through. Whereas we know she's generational.
Speaker 2Yeah. So what do you make of the news? So we're getting a standing start. Country Cup back for the paces.
Speaker 25Look, anytime I mentioned standing starts, I, uh, it sparks up, uh, it sparks up quite a debate. Look, it's not something I would have done. Um, but I respect the reasons why, um, I, yeah, look, I'm, uh, it's not that I'm not a fan of standing starts. I, you know, I, I very openly said, I think that, um, well, I mean, the simple facts is they turn over less money than, um, than mobile starts do it. So I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing.
Speaker 2I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing.
Speaker 26I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing.
Speaker 25I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing.
Speaker 25I think that's a good thing.
Speaker 26I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing. I'm not suggesting that all of our races and all of our premium races will ever be stand start again. But I think there's an opportunity for a selection, a summer series, if you like, Adam, as you coined. So I think that that's something that, you know, I'd like us to work through and find a way that we can align all those elements.
Speaker 2It's interesting. Text messages coming through and it's sort of mixed at the moment. And some say that the turnover will be double.
Speaker 25Yeah, but that's just not right.
Speaker 2Yeah, but I guess we won't know until...
Speaker 25Well, history says it's 20% less. Yeah. So that's, and that's over a long period of time, Garrett.
Speaker 26Yeah, the data doesn't lie. And, you know, whoever that text me, you know, great. I'd love to love that ambition. Hopefully they're a big punter and they're going to get involved. Yeah, exactly right.
Speaker 25Yeah.
Speaker 2Yeah, I remember growing up betting on standing starts. And like Ian McKellen, the late great Ian McKellen would be my favorite. He'd just ping them away. But like I've got mates and all that. And on the flip side of the thoroughbred people... People that will come over and you go... I remember the Hunter Cup when we got decked. Was it Mark Purden? And it's sort of...
Speaker 25Well, Christian Cullen got wiped out.
Speaker 2Yeah, broke a few hearts that night. So from a harness racing... I'm a harness racing fan. And I would like standing starts. I can adapt, try and work out what horses will step better. And I enjoy them. But it's hard to try and doing this show and talking to people who... Yeah. I bet on harness racing. They might go to the Shepparton Cup and bet on it for the first time. It is hard to try and get them over when their horse gallops and they take no part. That's the biggest challenge.
Speaker 26Hey, yeah, I understand, Gareth. Yeah, I think then the counter to that is you've literally got six of pretty much the same race. So I think, you know, it is providing that difference. Yeah. It is an opportunity to bring other horses into calculation here as well. Give people an opportunity to participate. Yeah. In some of our great country cups, you know, the Shepparton Gold Cup is a great, um, a great part of our, um, great, you know, great club, a great part of our industry work really hard for the benefit of our participants. We really want to reward that. And ensure, as I said, you know, that, that different type of experience for, for horses and, uh, and punters. So it won't be for everybody, but I think it'll, uh, it'll, I think it'll surprise a few. And, you know, you've touched on some of the failures, but, uh, of stand starts, but I remember Blossom Lady winning two as a stand start. Yeah, it was up in the early nineties and I backed her twice.
Speaker 25And the best race in this part of the world is a stand. And that's, that's often pointed out to me, the New Zealand Cup. So, but they have done, they have done away with, with handicaps in that race. So haven't they? So, and that might be.
Speaker 2Will there be handicaps in the Shepparton Cup? Yes.
Speaker 25Yeah. So.
Speaker 2So it'd be interesting. Will Kingman go there, leap to fame, depending on what handicap they have?
Speaker 25No, they won't go there. No. Well, they won't because like, it's, it's just, it's too difficult, you know, and, and that's the other. Really important thing. If you look back through the last few years of the Hunter Cup, the good horses weren't going to it because there's so many other options. And we now have, you know, slot race in Perth and things like that. But, but I still think there's a place for it. Absolutely. And, uh, and on, we're talking about country, but what I really like is this regional showdown series that you're bringing in as well, which is going again. We talk about other, other people and other horses being part of our biggest night on, uh, on Hunter Cup. Hunter Cup night and, and you're enabling that through this regional series, which is going to have what heats regional finals and a grand final, if you like.
Speaker 26Yeah, we're really excited about this concept. So we're introducing, um, a regional showdown series that will start, uh, we it'll ultimately be for regional horses with an up to 55 rating. Uh, it will, uh, be in regional areas as heats. Heats will lead into semifinals conducted at Bendigo, Cranbourne, Kilmore, Ballarat, Shepparton. Uh, forgive me if I've missed somebody there. And, uh, at semifinals with a final, a $50,000 final culminating on AG Hunter Cup night. So that's a huge opportunity for really strong payday of those types of, uh, um, those types of rated horses. And, you know, we think this is a really good concept that we'll be able to continue to grow and build on in the coming years.
Speaker 2We'll touch on more of that new concept in just a moment, because I've got to take a break. This is Giddy Up and Facing the Breeze. Gareth Hall, Adam Hamilton with you and our special guest for Facing the Breeze. On Giddy Up this Tuesday is the CEO of Harness Race Victoria, Matty Isaac.
Speaker 1Join the conversation. Text us on 0499 736 736. Live across Australia. This is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 2Welcome back to Giddy Up. Um, plenty of text messages coming through as well. Uh, HRV is Harness Racing fan. Standing starts in this day and age. We will go backwards. Backwards again. We're standing start. How about, um, smaller fields with five off the front and allow more room for horses. Kilmore Cup. Back to a stand start, please. This is fantastic news. Um.
Speaker 25And that's a, that's a snapshot of how people feel about it. Um, it's a really divisive issue, but I do see a place for it in small doses. I love the response we're getting to it. And I expected that we'd get that. I think this is one, a chat we can almost park for next. And let's, let's get Will, Will and Paddy, two new age harness racing people who probably have slightly different takes on it and, and get their opinion. You suspect Paddy, Paddy, you'd be supportive of it. And Will would probably think standing starts. He wouldn't know what a standing start is. He barely would have driven in any.
Speaker 2He won't, he'll forget.
Speaker 25He's just come from America where they've never heard of them. He'll have to get the VHS tape out.
Speaker 2He'll be like that race caller when we went to, um, Ireland and he was like, he only calls the mile races and he, he missed it. He's judged the laps. Oh yeah. When they bought the little brown. He was the famous, he was the famous race caller. Yeah. Roger Houston. Yeah.
Speaker 25It's Roger Houston. He called it in a Dominion heat in, in Adelaide one day, only called the winner and thumped the microphone down and no one knew he ran second or third.
Speaker 2Anyway, um, this Victoria Cup, so he's leaped a fame coming.
Speaker 25I don't, I don't think so. I don't think so. I look, it's hard to get anything concrete out of the team at the moment. Um, he, he will resume, I, I understand he's going to run first up on Saturday week at Albion park. Um, but as it stands, it looks like he's gonna, he's gonna do his lead up racing there and go straight to New Zealand.
Speaker 26Gareth, sorry, just to jump in over the top of you there, Adam, but I think you should refer to it as the SEN Victoria Cup. That's a very good point. I just saw that.
Speaker 25But I'll tell you who is coming is captain's mistress and those fields will be out in a minute. I think she might be trialing on Wednesday, not tomorrow.
Speaker 2Yeah. So, well, um, they're all coming back, aren't they? Kingman's coming back.
Speaker 25Well, Kingman's in Saturday night. Yeah. What I was going to mention, you got, that's a fascinating race. So Kingman against Hyman Amish Jeff and he's a punk rocker and Hyman Amish Jeff over a mile first up. Like if you look at that trial last week, he's going to take a heck of a lot of beating. He was, he was the star of that trial. But, um, just before we round out, um, the key stuff, I love this Greek sugars metal. It's a, it's a, it's a really fitting and lovely way to acknowledge a guy who we still miss every single day. Um, and I guess he just. He just epitomized everything that's great about harness racing, you know, and driving didn't he had champion talent, fantastic bloke, did everything he could to promote the sport. Craig sugars and, and had so much of his success during a summer summer of glory.
Speaker 26Yeah. For the, for, for people that, um, uh, unaware Greg, uh, Greg passed away April, 2025. So last year, and we really want to celebrate his legacy to harness racing. And as you said, Adam, he's just the most wonderful ambassador for. I think that we've almost ever seen and, um, you know, a great, just a great person, um, and just a huge loss and a huge tragedy. Um, and I think, you know, this is just a small way that harness racing, Victoria, and the industry can really celebrate his legacy with the naming of the Greg sugars metal. Um, it will be, um, a metal that, uh, ultimately is a point scoring system for drivers, uh, through the summer of glory and all of our group, uh, races. And above, um, and it'll culminate in obviously a metal winner with, uh, you know, a financial reward, obviously the metal itself and on a roll at Melton, but importantly, you know, we're also working with, uh, Jess tabs in the sugars family to elect a charity every year to make a two and a half thousand dollar donation in the name of the winner. Um, so yeah, there's a few elements to it that we're really excited just as a small way that we can, we can honor his great legacy. Yeah.
Speaker 25I think it's a lovely touch.
Speaker 2It's a bit like the, um, Nathan Berry. Yeah, yeah. During the Sydney carnival. So I think that's, that's a terrific tribute to Greg sugars because obviously we're respected by the older generation when it comes to the driving ranks, but a lot of the younger drivers really looked up to Greg as a, as a role model and a hero of theirs at that age really wasn't
Speaker 25in look at Jess tabs and speaking of her, we'll get to her in just a moment, but she put up the most lovely thing about James Herbertson and the win on howdy mate. The other night and how much that would mean to Greg who was, was such a huge part in, in James's career and, and chest hubs. I mean, what a job she's done in that most difficult of circumstances to, to go on with that big team of horses, win two group ones the other night, almost three with like Como, um, having a gear malfunction and still almost winning as well. So, um,
Speaker 2that was her biggest night. I reckon for like, since the passing of Greg sugars, everything that she's been through, obviously that interdimensional. Minion Heat Victory with Fighter Command but to like She's got her team firing, and it's all credit to her and her team. Craig Demler, I think, works there.
Speaker 25Yeah, I think Ryan Sanderson's there now too. Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, just really quickly, you wanted to know those draws. Tim O'Connor's just sent them through. They're all out for Saturday night, or they will be very soon for the VicBred finals. But the four-year-old end tires and Gelding's pacing finals, Storms Collide 1, See the Stars 2, Apollo Storm 3, Fair Plays in 4, I Am the Storm 6, 40 Love 5, Fox Dan 8, Inside the Back Row, The Last Trip 9, and New Shuffle Draws 11. So I don't know where to go there. And then in the four-year-old mares, oh, Gareth Barry 7.
Speaker 2Barry 7, who's drawn inside of us?
Speaker 25With your confession.
Speaker 2Where are the big guns drawn? That's all I want to know.
Speaker 25Well, you've got Miss Ari drawn 3. It'll happen. It'll hand up to us. House Party drawn 6. It'll hand up. Yeah, the big guns are off the back row there. You've got...
Speaker 2Hopefully we get $8 then.
Speaker 25The Art of Success draws 11, Americano draws 12, and Letter Roll draws 13. So 7's a lot better than it looked on face value. And then we've got, obviously, the trotting finals as well. I Am Hellbound and All Righty, both off the back row. So that opens up that four-year-old final. And then the trotting, the four-year-old trotting mares, I Am Wilma draws out the back, and so does Jellaby Dream Lover.
Speaker 2Interesting draws.
Speaker 25Random barrier draws. But the big guns are all, Matt, what's going on here?
Speaker 2It's just a handicap. Look, the handicap, it does...
Speaker 25It's going to make for great racing anyway.
Speaker 2It'll be interesting to see when those markets come up, come out for those finals. I'll take a break. We'll come back and we'll finish up, giddy up, and facing the breeze. Matty Isaacs is our special guest here on this Tuesday morning, the CEO of HRV.
Speaker 1Join the conversation. Text us on 0499 736 736. Live across Australia. This is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 2Welcome back to Giddy Up. Gareth Hall, Adam Hamilton with you, and our special guest is the CEO of HRV, Matty Isaacs. Matty, there's plenty of questions Adam wants to ask you about, but especially, I think, going to kick off with Milton.
Speaker 25Yeah, look. The future of Milton, again, we talked about this a few months ago, and things have been relatively quiet since. Where is it at? Where is it at? And underline for us again how important a financially good outcome for Milton is to the future of the sport.
Speaker 26Yeah, thanks, Adam. I'm not surprised with this question, because it is probably the most important question that sits over harness racing Victoria at the moment. And, you know, I think the simple answer, to that is we are in a little bit of a holding pattern at the moment, leading into the state election here in Victoria towards the end of November. So we've made it quite clear to the current Labor government and any potential government of a coalition or an alternative, whether it's One Nation, of our needs for the right financial outcome with the land that we have at Melton. We have some 75 hectares at Melton. That Harness Racing Victoria invested in some time ago that is worth a sizeable amount to the industry. Now, we do owe government around $86 million through support that they provided and paid out of long term debt in August 2024. So what I what I certainly see is a huge opportunity post-election to be able to get the right outcome there. Indications from both sides of politics have been positive. But until something is formalised and the right process is provided to HRV, I guess, you know, I remain nervous.
Speaker 25OK, so it was my understanding at the time when Harness Racing Victoria made the move from Moonee Valley to Melton that everyone, including the government at the time, was of the understanding that any benefits Harness Racing got out of that, any benefits that they got out of that, any benefits that they got out of that, any, any economic growth in the area would return to Harness Racing. Is that your understanding?
Speaker 26Well, you know, I can't comment on that. That's well before my agency overseeing Harness Racing Victoria. But, you know, what I can say is the government, the Labor government have been incredibly supportive of Harness Racing for a long period of time. You know, we've been heavily subsidised until 2023. Just happened to coincide with my with my start, sadly. And, you know, that subsidy, you know, stopped in March 2023. But, you know, Harness Racing Victoria has been well supported. That's allowed huge investments into prize money and other initiatives prior to that time. You know, we've right sized the business on the back of that since 2023. And we've got the business back on track. And the last, you know, the financial result for the, for Harness Racing Victoria at the end of June 30 will be close to a million dollar profit, which is an incredible turnaround from where we were in. Yeah.
Speaker 25So 2023, I think it was a forecasted loss of about 30, 30 odd million.
Speaker 2634 million.
Speaker 2How do you, how do you turn around so quickly then?
Speaker 26Well, what we've done is there's a combination of, combination of changes. So we've taken, you know, our headcounts going from 128 people to 68. We've driven revenue through Melton. Melton used to contribute just its rent payment and no profit contribution. It now contributes around $2 million in profitability as a venue, plus its rent, which is another three quarters of a million dollars a year. And we've also been able to drive revenue in the construct of HRV and how we generate revenue through our commercial agreements with our wagering service providers. So, you know, there's been a hell of a lot of work done. Every individual contract in the business as a supplier has been reviewed. So it's been a really intense couple of years and that's culminating in getting the business right. Part of that change was a prize money readjustment. $8.8 million of that $34 million was prize money, and prize money had been rebased at 51% of revenue, which is equal to that of Greyhound Race of Victoria.
Speaker 2And will you keep prize money at the same levels or will there be an increase?
Speaker 26Well, when we start to see revenues consistently perform, and the business is in a great place to do that, I would expect that, you know, the appropriate investments in the prize money and other initiatives will be able to be, those decisions will be able to be made by our board.
Speaker 25So what you've been able to do? We've been, what you're saying is, we've been living in a false economy. Up until sort of 2023, we were living in a bit of a false economy. We were paying prize money beyond sustainable levels.
Speaker 26Well, that's exactly right. If you look at the business model of the other two codes in Victoria, and we're funded the same way in this state, so they're the most relevant benchmarks, not harness racing in other states, roughly 51% of their revenues are going back into prize money. And we've benchmarked our same on that, ourselves on that. The challenge we have is the investments were made to, you know, in 2020, 21, 22, 23, on the back of COVID and other reasons to support harness racing that ultimately were trying for growth that didn't materialize. And that additional funding had been stopped by government in 2023. And, you know, we had to make those adjustments. So, you know, the industry's going through a really challenging time and, you know, and had to right size their own business models as trainers and owners and, um, and breeders. And it's very challenging, uh, but growth off the right base is very important. Yeah.
Speaker 2All right then. Um, we are running out of time. I'll have to get you on again in the next couple of weeks. Um, cause there is plenty to discuss. It's an important time. A lot of people want to know these answers as well.
Speaker 25Yeah. And the, and the Victoria cup carnival. I mean, let's, let's cut it back to racing. We're going to have a hell of a Victoria cup, aren't we?
Speaker 26Victoria cup, uh, 17th of October. So I'll be there. Really exciting.
Speaker 25Um, can she do it again? Captain's mistress. I think, um, was it just a golden campaign or can I pose that on Monday? Like is, could she become the greatest man we've seen?
Speaker 2I think it'd be draw dependable. If you've got Kingman or one of those horses and even one of the other Jason Grimm's other horses, if they draw well and she's outside the second row, then, you know, it's game on all of a sudden, but if she draws the lead, she's impossible to beat around Melton over 2,200 meters. Um, it's put your binoculars down basically. Yeah. So yeah. Looking forward to seeing, um, the Vic cup and, um, I reckon the Derby is going to be a great race later on the year as well. So bring it on. We'll catch up with you next week. Adam, any winners for us? We could confession looking at that draw. She'll be winning.
Speaker 25Yeah.
Speaker 2As soon as the prices go out, we'll get on the horse. That was so good to us winning the running of the bulls. And now she'll be a Vic bread winner. Good on you, Maddie. Thanks for joining us. Thanks, Gareth. Thanks, Adam. Great to see you both. There we go. Maddie Isaacson, Adam Hamilton with us. Um, thanks for your company. It's been a busy show. If you missed any of our segments or interviews today, we had Safi Osborne, the English St. Ledger winner, Chris Waller, Adam Blanco for racing and sports.com bag of tips to find you some winners. Just subscribe to giddy up with Gareth Hall. Have a great day. Catch you again tomorrow.
