Giddy Up Full Show (14/10/26)

The program covered a huge week in Australian racing, headlined by the 150th Caulfield Cup and The Everest. Ka Ying Rising remains the dominant Everest favorite despite drawing barrier 11, with connections unconcerned given his tactical versatility. In the Caulfield Cup, Calvin McAvoy expressed relief at Half Yours drawing barrier seven and confidence his horse has matured since last year's emotional campaign. The King Charles Stakes promises a fascinating clash between Pride of Jenny, Autumn Glow, and Ceolwulf, with owner Tony Ottobre confirming his mare will target the Empire Rose afterward and possibly the Northerly Stakes in Perth. A significant portion of the show addressed Victoria's twilight racing debate. Sam Freedman argued the schedule places unsustainable pressure on stable staff, many of whom finish late and must return for early trackwork. He called for better rostering, accommodation support, and greater consideration of participant welfare. Troy Causton acknowledged these concerns but defended twilight meetings as essential for turnover and prize money, urging the industry to adapt rather than resist change. Other topics included Blake Shinn's controversial replacement by Jamie Spencer on Royal Supremacy, jockey weight minimums, and whether She's Alibi should contest the Cox Plate or Golden Eagle. Tony Ottobre also revealed Jenny the Fox would represent his slot in the Southside series.

Speaker 1questions on oh four double nine seven three six seven three six to the garrett's horse and hound message line it's time for the wednesday agenda and it's time for the wednesday agenda and it's
Speaker 2course the wednesday agenda brought to you by bet three six five it's never ordinary when it's brought to you by bet three six five let's welcome in the team the president of the australian trainers association and one of our leading trainers is troy caustance he is in the house once again hello to you troy hello gareth how are you great time of the year it's unreal there's plenty happening and
Speaker 3so much happening so much to talk about and um so busy is this your favorite
Speaker 2time of the year or you prefer
Speaker 3autumn oh no this time yeah there's nothing like the spring it's um you know we're we're on show at the moment if you don't enjoy this time of the year and you're in horse racing get out yeah it's
Speaker 2basically i reckon once caulfield guineas commences uh the caulfield guineas day is on yeah right until the end of the flemington carnival 100 and i know people wanted to push back the carnival but i reckon the people who just follow racing for the spring they they go to champions day and then that's it they they head off yeah exactly and you know there's still there's
Speaker 3still some good racing going on and i think it's going to be a great time for the horse racing after after that and uh we've worked on that quite hard to try and retain and we're doing a good job i think we are too but uh you're right though the uh the general public probably get to that and then sort of switch off a little bit i
Speaker 2don't know what's happening with my wednesday agenda team i'm so proud of you every time i turn the tv on there's troy causton's like oh um emergencies was a great show well don't everybody involved there i thought i like brownie and felix was sensational it was a bit funny wasn't it yeah it was mytho was great it's good fun yeah yeah um and every time i turn the tv on there's troy causton's like oh and every time i turn the tv on there's troy causton's like oh and every time i turn the tv on there's troy causton's like oh and every time i turned on the tv yesterday or um was scrolling through social media calvin mcavoy he hasn't missed an opportunity to be interviewed especially during this caulfield cup week and i think he's at the airport as we speak he's heading to the ready to run sale there in sydney for english hello to you calvin morning gareth morning troy how are you hello how many interviews have you done calvin well we are
Speaker 4dealing with the um reigning caulfield melbourne and he's relevant at the moment he may be troy told me yesterday that uh in a couple of weeks will be irrelevant so okay who knows
Speaker 3maybe well it depends if he wins or not yeah might not be
Speaker 2any chance giving tony some air time like he yeah he's he's
Speaker 4doing his fair share don't worry yeah all right then
Speaker 2let's get stuck into the agenda we'll start with last night's barry draw of the everest um it was some spectacle it rained throughout but there was a little bit of drama as there always is now carrying rising still a dollar 40 troy with bet 365 he's drawn barry number 11 which is the second widest gate um is that a positive or a negative it doesn't matter no he could have
Speaker 3drawn 27 and still beaten him
Speaker 2i think yeah i think it's to be my opinion on this calvin i think it is a positive because zach purton's always said that he gets a little bit fractious in the gate and david hayes pointed this out yesterday that he didn't want barriers one or seven because if he got one or seven he's going to be a little bit fractious in the gate and he's going to be a little bit fractious in the gate and he's going to be a little bit fractious in the gate and he's going to the first horse to go into the gates so he'll be one of the last to go in and then he can just bite his time find some rhythm and then move across the field and then try and dominate and own the race like he did last year yeah i
Speaker 4think it's all right honestly i mean i'd probably prefer to be car you can draw on 11 then tempted drawn one to be honest but uh um a lot of rain around i think i had something like 60 or 70 mils so by the time the everest is getting around you know three wide miles i think it's going to be a lot of rain and i think it's going to be a lot of the place to be yeah
Speaker 3in fairness it's a ripper race isn't it like if you take car ying out and i know that's all we're talking about because we do think he's going to beat them but if you took him out have a look at that for a an assembled field of of good sprinters like you've got to have total respect for the rest of the horses in it
Speaker 2is it the best field that we could produce uh close to what else would you have um jigsaw yeah jigsaw yeah maybe yeah there might be a few maybe a few three-year-olds yeah i
Speaker 3suppose you can't knock jigsaw back yeah yeah the next episode
Speaker 2there's a few three-year-olds that i reckon would be in it if it wasn't for carring rising yeah maybe yeah yeah but it's still it's still bloody good isn't it yeah it's a great race it's a ripper race have we got those comments david hayes regarding the heavy track i want to play you these comments that he made with emma freeman and greg radley in last night's coverage of the barry draw what's the number where you start to get a little fearful um i think five six and seven i think it's a little bit more than that i think it's a little bit more than that i think can tolerate eight i'd start to worry nine i'd myself so that's david hayes so it's the unknown of a heavy eight or a heavy ten yeah yeah exactly and
Speaker 3there's that little question mark in the back of uh david's head but i still think he'd be pretty confident
Speaker 2you're a punter calvin what price would you take for carring rising if it was a heavy eight we got two dollars
Speaker 4last year didn't we at one point when all we got three when you were sitting we got three dollars when you were putting those rumors out on twitter gareth yes yes um look i don't know i mean it's very hard to have a bet on a horse that short i i think he'd be fine he's a he's the best sprinter in the world
Speaker 3and hong kong's an
Speaker 4interesting one isn't it hong kong's an interesting one because they get they do get days where they get 50 or 60 or 80 mil but their track it shut in and just drains it doesn't make any difference at all so um i've been there days that it's you
Speaker 2yeah um so yeah i reckon we might get close to two dollars if it is a heavy track um by the time they jump i still think you'll beat him yeah i agree with you and um yeah i think it would be great for the race in this you know in a way from a narrative perspective they
Speaker 4put blinkers on giga
Speaker 2kick yes they have yep yep barry 12 is no good looking forward to seeing him like it could be if he drew where say jolly star did he can do no work follow the speed with carting rising and then try and burst through like he did last year i like i was a fan of giga kick i think seven eight dollars was a big price but what does he do from the gate now calvin like he has to go back to
Speaker 4last he'll be three wide with well or three wide with cover you never know especially if the if it's a wet track they they might not go directly on the rail you know like they might just be a very wet outside gates aren't that bad can
Speaker 2you explain why tempted firmed into $4.50 after drawing gate one um there's plenty of speed to her outside there calvin like gate one would you be happy with that gate or not with
Speaker 4her i don't think so um they probably she's probably firmed in more so with the rain around probably yeah um look she gets she's got an amazing turn of foot so i think the main thing is that if she can get the luck at the right time you know she'll be switched off um she'll be you know in a pocket at some point if she can get out of that pocket well we know she's got a mighty turn of foot especially on a wet
Speaker 2track it will be a difficult ride i reckon troy for chad scofield because he might have two or three horses that cross him and then he's got to get to the better ground he's got to try and find the the right horses um to follow and then give us some clear galloping room to wind up the other
Speaker 3thing with her is her wet forms on soft ground as well not heavy so that i think that's quite interesting and depends what it's going to be i suppose if soft ground probably suits her um but she'll she'll just she'll just race her normal way i don't think they'll be changing too much with her i
Speaker 2think the big win is as well from the draw ninja loves a heavy track they tell me he's at 26 dollars but he gets a nice gate headwalls perform well he loves it yeah he's 51 dollars jimmy star is okay on on rain affected tracks jolly star and angel capital they've drawn perfectly but i reckon they're better suited to a slow track to a good track i think heavy track might be yeah tough work for them so um it has made it a little bit interesting now and then blue door's the interesting one jamie melam's jumped off half yours to ride her and she's at 51 dollars and she might be the early leader but how long will she hold on for she won't be holding out these horses i
Speaker 3know she's a good filly and i've got respect for her but she won't be holding out
Speaker 2these so that's a look at the everest um we'll get to the caulfield cup in just a moment but the other big race there on saturday is the charles pride of jenny takes on autumn glow takes on char wolf if it's only four or five horses in the king charles is that a success like despite the quality do you like for me i can't wait to see what kane rising's going to do but i think it's nearly the race of the day anywhere in the country saturday yeah
Speaker 3like it's going to be outstanding isn't it and so many different storylines coming into that yeah um you know he's he's autumn glow going to pop them off uh he's pride of jenny going to get her own way and be too good for them it's it's fascinating i'm really looking forward to it as well even though it is only four or five horse race but um gee it's
Speaker 2going to be a great race to watch less is more sometimes calvin no one should be getting held
Speaker 4up or we don't need speed
Speaker 2humps do we know no i
Speaker 4suppose and i mean there's been a lot of talk on this show about um match races um you know what's better a two horse match race or a four you know four great horses yeah i'd probably prefer to watch the four great horses
Speaker 2yeah i think this is as close as we might get to a race like this if you've got autumn glow char wolf pride of jenny i don't think tom kitten's going to be there the only horse that i think might be paid up is militarized five there's i
Speaker 3can't tell you what's in it at the moment because sydney doesn't do progressive acceptances but i can tell you there's five accepted at this stage
Speaker 2there you go so i reckon it's autumn glow char wolf pride of jenny and militarized maybe just folk or a horse like that they might have paid up with not sure were you surprised i didn't go there with mr
Speaker 3brightside um not um you are are you cal i'm you know i think they want to yeah they i think they really need to get this next run right so yeah but the boys would be
Speaker 2there's a chance it's going to be a firm track there on crystal mile down cox plate day and they've been looking for a rain affected track um his best trips a mile i know he's probably going to take on like he's taking on the best of the best but if he's been to get a guy where he's at this is his opportunity isn't kelvin on a rain affected track yeah it'd be
Speaker 4interesting to talk to um the boys as to whether if pride of jenny wasn't there would they have gone i know that um you know they don't like racing her which is fair enough not many do but um yeah as as you said it's most likely going to be a good track at those next two potential races the crystal mile and also the champions mile um i know last year was heavy but uh he was going to get his conditions in a small field i would have been going there if i trained him
Speaker 2troy he goes to a crystal mile you've been talking to the boys i actually haven't spoken to him
Speaker 3about weighing it up yeah i haven't spoken to him about uh what they get what they're doing and where they're going with him i'm
Speaker 2not sure no so i wonder what the other horse is there so autumn glow child wolf pride of jenny it will be militarized one more maybe god's window um or just folk or a horse like that because the prize money is pretty good to finish four not too bad are you with child wolf 350 now to beat autumn glow yeah i'm autumn glow yeah i'm with autumn glow calvin autumn glow
Speaker 4and then autumn glow all
Speaker 2the way yeah and then we go to the caulfield cup now i think you're still over the moon you got a big smile on your face barry seven you'll come in a few more half yours uh mark sarah rides he should be able to put him where he wants to and a few of your major main dangers have drawn badly calvin
Speaker 4yeah it was we were really happy to get that draw i mean high pressure mile and a half contest the barriers are important and what we've been dictated to a little bit in his last couple of runs with drawing outside and just having to go back so he drew beautifully last year in the caulfield cup he drew two um you know he jumped from probably six at this stage and yeah i think mark will just be able to give him a restful run which is what he's going to need gareth you know third up 2400 at the caulfield cup you know he's going to be able to do that he's going to be able to his preparation was sort of geared towards a cox plate so being third up at the 2000 we're now going to be third up at the 2400 so um we feel he's done enough work there's no doubt about that but you know if he'd drawn barrier 18 well it makes the task much harder uh we're very happy with the barrier zara galloped him yesterday morning he loved him and what did he say what did he say well he was coming out of the tunnel at flemington i just saw him give a little pat i think that was enough uh he loved him he gave him a good feel they had a nice solid gallop on the course proper at flemington was it was proper staying work and he handled it beautifully had a healthy blow that'll clean him up and uh no mark was really happy how do you feel going to
Speaker 2this year's caulfield cup compared to last year i
Speaker 4feel less pressure this year last year he was the horse everyone was talking about he was you know one of the shortest price favorites in a caulfield cup for some years and i think he's going to be a great guy i think he's going to be a great guy you know 100 years or something so um this year i feel like we're not getting spoken about as much which i don't mind um what do
Speaker 2you mean you don't you're telling everyone's got no idea that haven't tipped him basically
Speaker 4i just told no i told you you've got no idea um look i i prefer it this way last year i was a mess going into this week i'd handled myself terribly and i just i felt the pressure uh personally and uh you know he's done it now he's been to that level and um you know he's gotten it a mile and a half and beyond so um we know he's an elite stay he's going to get a lovely run and he'll just need the luck at the right time and you know if he can carry that big weight he'll he'll he'll give a great account of himself i'm sure of it
Speaker 2so what did you learn from last year describe how you're a mess and how you've been able to learn from that experience to make you um better this time around i think it was
Speaker 4just we hadn't been well i personally hadn't been in that position before like you know with you know you've had group one and group two and one favorites and and good horses that you know you're going into big big races but this felt very different it's one of the majors major races and um to have him that short he was in with the right weight everyone all the pros would had him over the line effectively and um you know i just you battle with your own emotions because at the end of the day they are a horse they've still got to eat their dinner every night they've got to not get a temperature not step on a shoe they've got to be right all these little boxes that need to be ticked that that the general punter probably doesn't know about or doesn't think about that horse trainers go to bed worrying about wake up worrying about and you know troy can attest to this as a trainer you're basically waiting for something to go wrong that's what you do and um you know i i didn't sleep much the week going into it and i and i think that's probably why i showed a fair bit of emotion when he crossed the line because it was pure relief uh from my point of view
Speaker 3yeah troy happens all the time and and we put so much in and and people you know i think any sport that's as high pressure as ours is we're all so competitive but and we do like we that so much can go wrong does it
Speaker 2get easier for you been in the game for a long
Speaker 3time yeah it does the the older i've got the the the better i handle situations um and the more i've come to accept that shit happens um and and it just does like you don't want it to today i've got a beautiful filly that's um a frankel filly that was meant to be running in the first being sold tomorrow um close to if if things went right and she won today it's close to change my life sort of stuff um she's got to come down with a bit of a lurgy and got some mucus in her throat and we've had to scratch her so you know things just happen on a on a knife's edge and you've just got to deal with it and get on with it
Speaker 2but like um we're going to take a break but that's i wanted to have a chat about this and why you've brought it up now so you had this two-year-old filly by frankel yeah it's rare we see a two-year-old buy that champion sire up and ready this early you're going to sell her at the ready to run sale for english is what we do tomorrow which is what you do as a business perspective um she might go through the ring now 300 400 000 because of her trial but if she wins today there's a chance you could get one million maybe more yeah i think so
Speaker 3how do you sit with
Speaker 2that
Speaker 3like it's terrible it's it's it's really really hard and my business manager i i hadn't told him that she's been crook so um you know but it just is what it is there's nothing you can do about it you can't stop them contracting uh little lurgies here and there but um that sort of stuff can be life changing you've just that's why calvin talks about when um half yours went over the line the relief that we get um it's because it's that's why we do it yeah it's it's it's really really tough but it's really really rewarding when it
Speaker 2goes down and so does have you seen will handle stuff differently to you and you be here then like um you see a little bit of wielding you when you're
Speaker 3of course yeah and he's probably we'll like in
Speaker 2your training yeah sorry well and
Speaker 3he's also my nephew yeah so that helps a little bit but um yeah i i watch the way and i try and coach him so i see myself as a bit of a coach with him coming through and i think a lot of training partnerships are like that um tony would be exactly the same with calvin and obviously the hayes boys would be the same as well so you try and coach them and uh nine times out of ten when something pops up or something goes wrong uh the older guys have been through it seen it done it um dealt with a hard owner or something like that um so i'm just here to coach and guide will um and and getting through it and show okay well that that happens we just need to do this get on with it and keep going
Speaker 2calvin how difficult would it have been for lucy yeomans and tyler donaldson last week their horses run out of there skin and they've prepared them beautifully changing colors and welcome to the show second third and the churrac and both look like they were going to win at some stage in that race but for young trainers like that that that have been dreaming of winning a group one and they get so close like um how difficult would it be for them to regroup and get going again after that that um that situation there on saturday yeah look of
Speaker 4course it's a bitter pill to swallow you've got it's a really tough one because you're so proud of your horse and your systems and you've presented that horse and they've ran to their peak and you've been beaten right so i think it's probably more of a test of character as to you know you either have a chip on your shoulder and you get dirty on it or you you're proud of your team and the fact that you've proven that you're up to that level and although it didn't go so well i think it's probably more of a test of character you know that it will the other one just back on the what we're talking about like annabelle nation the whole week leading to the corporate cup i was just thinking about annabelle nation with zaki cox plate morning temperature you know that was her he was a dollar 60 or something and that was just that opportunity that was there gone and it's very hard like she may never win a cox plate you know and that's what that was was what was going through my mind and you know another thing that punter general punters probably don't realize is this time of the year the spring is when horses get crook it's the change of weather it's probably out of any time this is the time where you pick up little bugs and temps and um it's very very hard but you've just got to stick to your processes and pray that nothing goes wrong so the most nervous
Speaker 2you are is when you walk into those stables saturday morning to check the temperature
Speaker 4oh 100
Speaker 3and it's it's 100
Speaker 4as soon as that's getting ticked off and and well we trot
Speaker 3and canter ours on a on a on race morning as well just to make sure that they're okay and and bright and yeah
Speaker 2and well oh four double nine seven three six seven three six to join our conversation on the garrett's horse and hound text line we'll take a break and then we'll continue on the wednesday agenda
Speaker 1join the conversation text us on oh four double nine seven three six seven three six live across australia this is giddy up with gareth hall
Speaker 2welcome back to giddy up the it's nationals are arrived as well we're the second shipment so stinger glass the japanese horse arrived um monday and i think all of the rest of joseph o'brien's horses basically have arrived overnight as well so they're all here look out yeah it's great you might have six or seven maybe in the melbourne cup joseph o'brien who's the horse to beat outside of yours of course in the caulfield cup calvin um i think
Speaker 4zaran is still going to be very hard to beat back on good ground i think cosmic crusader should he run the trip um i think george yeah yeah there's there's some nice horses in it i don't really know i haven't had a chance to really dive into it just yet i wanted to wait for the barriers to come out and um then we'll start looking looking into it i suppose troy uh royal
Speaker 3supremacy for me i like half yours i really like him much as it pains me to say it in front of kelvin but um i'll be going i'll be cheering for him that's for sure but i think royal supremacy can
Speaker 2run a good race royal supremacy jamie spencer takes the ride the star european jockey um and also ray dawson rides amphitry who is one of the favorites for this year's i thought blake shin was booked on um i thought
Speaker 4blake shin was booked on royal
Speaker 2supremacy they might have changed i'm just having a look now
Speaker 3jamie spencer's down on
Speaker 2him yeah jamie spencer is down all right blake hasn't got a ride no which is unbelievable really must have double
Speaker 4they must have they must have double booked him
Speaker 2did they so despite harry coughing um riding full confidence yesterday i still think he's one of the best staying jockeys in the land harry coffee and he hasn't got a ride um either either is blake shin so it begs the question here troy um how much is it a risk to go with an international jockey compared to a local jockey with the class of a blake shin for
Speaker 3instance in fairness in in that field blake shin could probably only ride him in the land harry coffee and he hasn't got a ride six of them anyway i don't think he can get down to 54 and a half so there's only six that would be in his weight range and i'd still question mark he can ride 55 and and text me if you're listening blake because i know he does love listening um yeah i think under 55 having a listener of the show would be too hard
Speaker 2would you if you if you'll say envajar and roger varian i know ray dawson um is he stable right and he's had his best ever season ray but this is his he'll he'll rock up the caulfield for the first time never ridden here and then ride in a caulfield cup but but would you prefer blake shin at 55 than him at 54 and a half i would but i'm not roger
Speaker 3varian yeah yeah
Speaker 2a hundred
Speaker 4percent i'd prefer we gareth we um we had coco's son who ran terribly but we she had no weight and we flew caris teatnatt and paris who i get on very well with he's a lovely guy great rider oh my god yeah it was just a great ride and i think it's a great ride and i think it's a great ride it's a disaster train wreck and you know it was it was we should have just gone with a local lightweight rider so i think um yeah i think often you can be trying to do the right thing in that situation it might not work
Speaker 3i did i did the same one night and it was mooney valley i think it was manicato night from memory a few years back and i had two good runners and i i managed to get joe marera far out he just slaughtered both of them because he was literally he was there for the manicato and
Speaker 2nothing else i don't think like and i always have this this argument with a few people say these jockeys like right like ryan moore hasn't stuffed up too many occasions he's a he's in rare air like a zach pertner james mcdonald damien lane for instance that have had success craig williams has done it on numerous occasions traveling internationally that they can rock up have less than 12 hours there in the country and then compete but these jockeys sometimes this is different to the caulfield cup but like some of those jockeys they get to come and ride in a melbourne cup like william buick and who's a champion rider but he's competing in a breeders cup which is nearly one of their biggest carnivals of the year in the in america so they're going to basically three different time codes um they fly to australia they have less than 24 hours or just over 24 hours here and then you want them to compete against jockeys that they don't really compete against around flemington over two miles in our biggest ever race i just if you play the percentages it's difficult for them to perform at their best yeah
Speaker 3yeah a hundred percent yeah um and but at the end of the day the other thing that you've got to think about is that we if you know if i'm taking a horse overseas i took frosty lane over with us when he rode the astrologist he rode him in dubai then he went to ascot and rode him there and i know he's an international jockey but sometimes you prefer someone that you know someone that knows the horse someone that knows your stable someone that knows how you operate so that's why i see why they do it um and blake shin has just text me he was booked to ride royal supremacy and kieran told him that they double booked um and then he was taken
Speaker 2off wow for jamie spencer yeah
Speaker 3and he can write i'm sorry blake blake can write 54 and a half there you go
Speaker 2and jamie spencer like he's a he's a he's a he's been a great jockey over in in europe he's like one of the best he's a great sit sprint jockey and he suits their tracks he's a good fella too he's a ripper fella but he hasn't got a great record here in this country terrible yeah that's that's just the fact of it yeah 100 so there you go jamie spent and and you know and you know what i hope he wins the caulfield cup now jamie spencer well he might i hope he wins the Caulfield Cup, but I find that stagnant. Well, he will now you've said that. What price is he, Royal Supremacy? And he's going pretty well of late, but he has won races of farcical tempos, like Q22. I don't think he can win anyway, he's $20 odd. He'd be $15 if played out.
Speaker 3The other thing I'll say
Speaker 4about the jockey situation is you talk about the top and you're talking about the Zaras, the Lane, like Ryan Moore, they are like the F1 drivers. I think they can go anywhere pert and compete. They're in a different level.
Speaker 2Yeah. Gareth, these are world-class jockeys that are tied to the stable. Why would the question be asked if Roger Varian should be using his jockey? Amazing. That's from Semi Highland. Gareth, the big question is why did we go through the ridiculous exercise of having a minimum top weight rise when good riders are still missing out on rides? Is it better to lose top riders or top horses, such as Eliana? That's from David.
Speaker 3That's a really good question and something that they've looked at for the Melbourne Cup. Obviously, the Melbourne Cup has the minimum top weight, whereas the Caulfield Cup, it's a bit lower,
Speaker 4isn't it? Yeah. Terrible rule. Terrible rule.
Speaker 3There's no interest like self-interest, Kelvin.
Speaker 2I think it's a difficult one, isn't it? Do you want Eliana or do you want James McDonald and Mark Saar and Blake Sheehan and Hughie Bowman and
Speaker 3Zach Burton? They're our best jockeys and you want them all riding in our best races. That's what we need. We're here to showcase our sport and that's what people want to see.
Speaker 2We'll take a break. It's 8.33. We'll come back with plenty more. This is the
Speaker 1Wednesday Agenda. Join the conversation. Text us on 04009 736 736 Live across Australia. This is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall. Welcome back
Speaker 2to Giddy Up, Gareth Hall. It's 8.35. There's a heap of questions coming up. Coming through. Troy, what do you make of Cosmic Crusader Barry 17? Is that a good or bad draw for him?
Speaker 3It's got to be bad, doesn't it? Like it's going to take an absolute W pike speciality. You said he couldn't win anyway. I did and I'm just I'm trying to and I got slammed last week on the thing because I said his father Maurice didn't get, didn't win over 2,000 metres. I meant he didn't win past 2,000 metres. So I knew he was a champion 2,000 metre horse but um and if you look at his pedigree he shouldn't be getting past a mile. So I know he was very good over 2,000 metres last week but I reckon to get the 2,400 on Saturday he needed a plum draw, a brilliant ride and he might still get the brilliant ride but jeez it makes it hard for him out there, doesn't it?
Speaker 2It's 8.36. This is what Kieran Marr had to say when I had a chat to him on Monday when I asked him whether the three-year-olds can win the Cox play in a speaker war woven and blind race. Can any of those three-year-olds like a blind racer or war woven win a Cox play? No. No.
Speaker 5Why? Because it's going to be run at a very hot tempo. Yep. Yep.
Speaker 2Um, is that because you've got light infantrymen and maybe of course playing legend? I
Speaker 5suppose they could, you know. The three-year-olds have a great record and but you know, when seasoned horses it's tough when races are run like that.
Speaker 3Do you agree with Kieran? I totally disagree with you. Um, jeez, I think a hot tempo is going to suit a horse like blind race. He probably doesn't have to do a quarter start. Won't break his heart, will it? Oh, I don't think so. Like he's, he's going to be he's going to be coming into a plum. He had a really good strong hit out on Saturday. Um, I think it'll suit war woven as well. So I disagree. I think they can both run really well in a Cox play in a very, very open Cox play this year.
Speaker 2Yeah. Calvin? Yeah, I think
Speaker 4this is a year that they can probably do it. I mean, there's no Winx or VS Sestina this year, is there? I think it was like one of those years. It would be very, very
Speaker 2difficult. You just let us know when you have to board Calvin, all right? You can, you can head on to the flight anytime you want.
Speaker 4No worries, mate.
Speaker 2Thank you. All right, then. Um, and the other big talking point out of Saturday from a trainer's perspective is that the, she's Alice, but she's alibi story, like track record time. She went enormous at her first go over 2000 meters, but now she's got to be freshened up to get back to the Golden Eagle trip of 1500.
Speaker 3Don't discount Peter Moody and Kat
Speaker 2Coleman. Yeah, a hundred percent.
Speaker 3And, and there's a reason that she's a dollar 80 favorite. Um, they, the guys would have sent her down. She would have gone down the beach for a few days, probably just waited in the water a little bit. They'll freshen her up beautifully. She's got three weeks, goes up there, rock hard fit, had a really massive hit out. That won't flatten her. She was third up. She's going up there for, she'll smash them. She, and what's going to beat her? That's the other point. I think there's a few trainers
Speaker 2changing their minds now. Like Chris Waller was adamant that, well, he did tell us the other day that Autumn Boy was coming for the Cox Plate, but now he's thinking that tough run, we might have a crack now at the Golden Eagle,
Speaker 4Calvin. Um, look, I don't discount discount moods and that. Wasn't ideal, I don't think. I think in their mind, they went there thinking that that'd be a sedate tempo. It'd be a, you know, it'd be a 10 home two, 10 home three, and it certainly wasn't the case. And I think you probably see on Moods' face when she got beat. He was obviously in disbelief for one, but I'd say he was in the back of his mind thinking, gee whiz, she's had a really tough run. So like, you know, like, um, I said yesterday somewhere, like the term, all the horses behind, um, the winner, like I said, Delia's like our horse, half yours. Having that really tough run is probably what they need as long as they bounce through it well. If they, if they lay down for three days, then you're in trouble. But if they, if they get that very hard hit out, uh, and then they bounce out of it, bring them on
Speaker 3enormously. That's an issue, Cal, if they're backing up in a week. They've got three weeks. So, I, you know, I can't see it.
Speaker 2I've got a question for you, all right? And, um, people blow up at me here saying, Gareth, you can't do this. You can't have one rule for one horse. And, um, obviously, favour one horse and not the others. But if you're Moonee Valley or Racing Victoria or Ladbrokes, for instance, why wouldn't you just go to Peter Mooney and Fred Nofsky after that and say, mate, we'll pay you appearance fee to turn up for the Cox Plate now. Don't worry about that late nom. We'll pay that for you. Um, and we want you in the Cox Plate. We think you can win the Cox Plate. You've had that tough run. I know, I know it's a, I know it's a money thing going to the Golden Eagle, but let's try and make up for it. And, like, if you go and win the Cox Plate and then the champion stakes, we'll give you a million dollar bonus. Yeah, and I. Would people in the industry get upset if Moonee Valley and Racing Victoria spent money on that?
Speaker 3Probably. Yeah, I think so, because it's a bit sort of, um, elitist and you're sort of singling out one horse. Is it good for racing, though? Yeah, probably. Is it good for Victorian racing? Would it make more than a million dollars,
Speaker 4would it make more than a million dollars back doing it? Like, it's all about if you're investing in to make, is it going to be another million dollars of turnover in the race or something like that? I'm not sure. Well, they did it for Leith.
Speaker 2They did it for Leith Grisseur.
Speaker 3Yeah, true. Yeah. Yeah, what's the difference between doing a local horse? All you're trying to do is, um, promote them to stay and, um, you know, Michael Brow probably should have come up with that.
Speaker 2But Victoria, yeah, Victoria, like, to. New South Wales have been throwing the first punches when it comes to this, and they're laughing, basically. They're in Sydney saying that we've got She's Alibi and, um, Autumn Glow. We will see Autumn Glow, maybe, for Champions Day. But there's a chance that you could have gone to Ladbrokes, for instance, or one of the sponsors, and go, all right, then, how can we put together a package to try and entice Fred and Pete to stay in Victoria? And if they're going to a Caulfield, Might and Power stakes, and they've nearly, um, she's did what she did over 2,000 metres, like, there's a chance to try and, all right, then, Pete, then why don't you stay here now?
Speaker 4She'd be a moral in the cocksplate.
Speaker 3Yeah, 100%. I don't like it. I really don't like it because I'm a racing purist, and I think, uh, it is this time of the year where we have the eyes on our sport. We need, I would love to, imagine that cocksplate if she was in it. Like, it just gives us so much more. Instead, we're splitting our resources, and we're going to Sydney, and we're going to Melbourne. I really don't like it.
Speaker 2But you might have to think outside the square and do business differently. Or maybe keep these type of forces there these days. Um, it's 8.42, we're going to take a break. Are you going to stay with us for a little while, Calvin? Because Sam Freeman will be joining us to talk about Twilight Racing, straight after this break here on Beauty Apple. I'd love to hear that.
Speaker 4I'd love to hear that, but I might have to duck off, I reckon. So I'll listen later on.
Speaker 2All right, good on you, Calvin. Good luck. See you, mate. Good luck buying a horse that they're ready to run. If you find a hard kick for us, let us know, can you?
Speaker 4www.macaboyracing.com.au We've got some breeze-ups. We're going to find the next Tom Bolt, the next hard kick.
Speaker 2Let's go. Thank you, Bjorn. Appreciate that. We'll catch up with you later. We'll take a break. Sam Freeman to join us next.
Speaker 1Text us on 0499 736 736 live across Australia. Welcome back to Giddy Up, Gareth Hall
Speaker 2with you and Troy Causton. You're so right, Gareth. That's the first the waving lady. Acceptance fee. There is actually only a million. difference in prize money. 4.2 to the winner for the Cox Plate and 5.2 for the Golden Eagle. But a group one would easily counter the million prize money. Garish, she's alibi, will have to beat Baywack and Auden Boyd to win a share of $10 million. Easier proposition than Sir Delius Aliana, etc. That's a good point. Moonee Valley Racing Club let Black Caviar have a barrier between her and Hit Angels in Amoya back in the day because he was a nutter. Precedent is there for elitism and favouritism. There was a couple of, there's a lot of love for Blake Sheen on the text line as well after getting pushed off for all supremacy for Jamie Spencer. Someone said to me just then, actually it was me, it'd be like picking, if Australia and England had their greatest ever test side and you had to pick one side between the two nations, like picking Monty Panesar over Shane Warne. Please. Anyway, he probably will be three back the fence and we're all supremacy and get out and write an absolute treat, Jamie Spencer. And told us he told us so. We're going to take a break on the other side of it. Sam Friedman will be joining us. Welcome back to Giddy Up Gareth Hall with you. There's been a lot of debate and talk on social media. Regarding Twilight Racing now in Victoria. Racing Victoria this season have converted 16 meetings in the daylight savings period from day to twilight meetings. So three on Wednesday. So they've become twilight meetings from day meetings and 13 on Thursday. Now they've done this. They've done all of the data. They think that this can make the industry at least three quarters of a million dollars in additional net revenue. So that does, that's after they pay the extra prize money to these twilight meetings. But it's got a few people in the industry from a participant perspective that aren't happy, Troy. You lead the Trainers Association. You would have been in talks with Racing Victoria.
Speaker 3We were. Our whole committee, we had a meeting about it and they showed us the figures and they showed us how much more the turnover we got and they showed us how much more was going to be coming back into racing. And we all agreed and signed off on it.
Speaker 2Sam Friedman. I don't know if he is a fan. He's not, but he was in the meeting as well. Was he in the meeting? Sam, hello to you. Thanks for joining us.
Speaker 5No worries. Thanks for having me on.
Speaker 2Twilight Racing. Explain why you're not a fan.
Speaker 6Yeah, look, I take on board the idea behind it and there's good intentions with it to keep prize money at a level that everyone's comfortable with. And, yeah, you know, here's the buzzwords of turnover and increased revenue and everything like that. I just, my view is it's at what cost. And I did raise this in a couple of meetings that, you know, the staff that are at the coalface on the ground doing the work, you know, we've got a Sydney stable and I'm sort of getting more and more staff sort of sent to an extent that we've now seen arduous nature of Twilight Racing and getting home late and, you know, the reality of track work hours, which is often the argument, you know, start working the horse later the next day is largely flawed just due to, you know, the way that training tracks are set up. So, yeah, my view is that there's got to be a much better balance than what there is. I mean, Warrnambool tomorrow finishing at 6.30, you know, for local trainers, no problem, but the large, you know, the large portion of horses that are trained are not in Warrnambool with respect. So, it's yeah, I think it's just, it's a challenge that the industry is obviously facing to keep prize money levels the same, but, you know, there's got to be a balance that's looking after participants and to be completely frank, I just don't think that stable hands and those at the coalface are getting much of a saying at all.
Speaker 3Troy? You're spot on, and it is tough, and I'm not denying that, Sam, but I think, you know, at the end of the day, we're an entertainment business. We need to roll, and we're out there to put the show on. The show's not putting us on. So, if we can do stuff to get more eyes on our sport, more wagering, more turnover, it's returns to us and returns to participants. If we want prize money to go back and start dropping and levels to go down, we can't, you know, we can just forget about this sort of stuff and not look at it. What we have to do is adapt. And you're spot on, Sam. I know it's really, really tough for staff to be getting home at 10 o'clock at night and then having to get up the next morning. But let's reschedule. Let's reschedule stuff for staff and start, you know, start leaning into it and having staff that literally only go for that sort of meeting. And the other thing about the Warrnambool finish at 6 o'clock, you've got to look at the, we've got a lot of trainers down in the Western Districts. And when the night meetings are on at Pakenham and Cranbourne, I've got a lot of Warrnambool trainers ringing me saying there's too many night meetings at Warrnambool and Pakenham. So, all this is doing is evening that stuff out. So, it's got to be even for everybody.
Speaker 2Is it easy to adjust your business then, Sam, to cater for these twilight meetings then so you can have your staff as fresh as they possibly can with the schedule that's in front of you? Yeah.
Speaker 6Well, look, we've had meetings and come up with some strategies to help aid our staff when they're racing late. And I think what punters probably don't realise is, you know, hypothetically if we've got a horse in the last at Warrnambool tomorrow night, they're getting home at 11.30 maybe and they've got to treat the horse with some electropaste and put it away, feed it, check it, make sure it's settled. Then they've got to drive home. They might live half an hour away. And, you know, what used to be the expectation would be that you're back in at 4.30 and work in the morning, which is quite clearly unsustainable. So, we've started trying to roster them off the following morning for when they're supposed to be working. But you know, on top of that is largely a staffing crisis for trainers that you know, there's a clear shortage which has been well spoken about. And so, you know, then it just piles more pressure obviously on the staff that are there the next morning. And, you know, I understand for the entertainment industry we are here to largely serve punters who are funding the game. So, I'm not under any illusion that we are above what's you know, putting money in our pockets. But, for the staff, you know, if you put yourself in their shoes and you go why would I keep doing this if hypothetically I can go to New South Wales and have a much better work-life balance that caters for that. So, that's sort of my view on it. The balance for me is out. And I had this discussion, I've had it with Troy and had it with Aaron Morrison a couple of times to further extend to Twilight's is those night meetings that finish at 9.45, 10 o'clock and some of them into the footy season which for me is just baffling because there wouldn't be anyone watching Pakenham on a Thursday night when you've got Collingwood and Melbourne at the MCG. So, I think it's just got to be a bit more a bit more smartness to how it's going and have a better balance. I'm not saying get rid of them entirely but it's just where to, you know, they're introducing more now. At what point do they go okay, we're not racing through the day at all and we'll just have night meetings. You know, that's sort of where it's heading and if you want to have as much turnover as possible you know, you essentially make it like a pokey machine and I think it just it detracts from yeah, the core of the industry and the people that are putting the show on and doing the work.
Speaker 2Yeah, there's plenty of text messages coming through on the Garrett's Horse and Hound text line. I've got a few more questions for both Sam and Troy. I'd be interested, did you do a poll? I've got about 50 seconds before I get cut off. What would be the percentage of trainers if they were asked the question whether they like these meetings or not?
Speaker 3Oh, I'd say a lot wouldn't like it but then you've got to ask the question, did they like the extra $2.2 million wagered on both of those meetings? And then in turn, the extra $70,000 plus that came back into the industry on each of those meetings. So we need to, we can't just sit back and say we don't like it, we don't want to do it. We need to adapt and we need to change and we need to lean into it.
Speaker 2It's 8.58, we'll take a break. We'll continue on our chat with Sam Friedman and also Troy Causton's about Twilight Racing in the state of Victoria. This is Giddy Up, all thanks to Bet365. This is the Wednesday Agenda on this Wednesday morning.
Speaker 1Text us on 0-4-double-9-7-3-6-7-3-6. Live across Australia, this is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 2Welcome back to Giddy Up. Troy Causton, Sam Freedman's just basically replaced Calvin McAvoy as he's jumped on a plane. And both Troy and Sam are making really good points about the debate regarding Twilight Racing. My two bobs worth here. Now, if I just arrived from a different sport and didn't know what you guys were all about, and then I analysed it all and sat back and said, all right then, guys. So you're telling me you've got three clubs, and this is Racing Victoria's numbers, that you're saving, if you merge these clubs, or you work to come together. And now I know some clubs will debate this number that Racing Victoria proposed, but they're saying around $50 million. And then you're sitting here and you're having a debate of saving three quarters, or making an extra at least three quarters of a million dollars by having Twilight Racing and moving 13 race meetings from day to twilight so the participants have to work longer in the day. People will say you're crazy. It doesn't make sense.
Speaker 3In fairness, that's the figure of two meetings. So we can't judge these figures until we see them. So you say three quarters of a million. Yeah. And it's still a substantial amount of money coming back to participants. But, mate, I dead set agree with you. And I'm not talking, like, we don't need to talk about mergers of the clubs. The clubs can still retain their own identity, which is exactly what I think they want to do. But the merging of resources, HR, marketing, like there's so many things that we could sit back and look at and have a crack at. It'd be absolutely. It'd be absolutely unjust if we didn't.
Speaker 2Is that what you find frustrating, Sam, when you hear numbers like that?
Speaker 6Yeah, absolutely, yeah. I mean, it's. I think all participants, you know, would like things run with a lot of continuity and, yeah, unfortunately, there's different priorities for different race clubs and everyone is. Yeah, there's self-interest involved with. a lot of race clubs that are. And that's fair enough. You know, it's their own club. It's their members. But, yeah, I mean, the broader discussion for me is simplified in that the staffing crisis isn't improving. And I don't think those in offices and at Race in Victoria are quite in tune with just where it will get to if we don't do something. To both retain those that are in the game but also attract staff to it. Like, I watch my staff who work their arse off and I admire them. They love horses. They love what they do. And often I sort of look at it and go, geez, like, you've really got to love this game to be in it. But you'd love to attract people that, you know, don't have a history of being in it. A lot of the young people that are in it, you know, have had horses from when they're a young age or their family are in racing or anything like that. I just don't think there's enough to draw them from somewhere else. And at some point, those resources to source staff are going to run dry. And, you know, like I said before, there's other jurisdictions that are catering to them a little more than our own. And I think it's important that they're becoming a bit more of a priority.
Speaker 2So if you're finishing later, why can't you start. Start later, Sam? Would that work?
Speaker 6It would work to an extent, yeah. I mean, look, we're fortunate at Pinecliffe, for example. We work off daylight. There's no lights on the track here. So, you know, when the clocks changed the other day, we now pull the horses out to work at. First horse goes out at 6.30. Cranbourne, first horse goes out at 5. Sydney, the first horse goes out at 5. I'd have no issue starting. I mean, I did a fair stint in Newmarket and we used to pull out at 7 o'clock and then in winter, you'd pull out at 7.30. We'd work through till midday and we'd start the afternoons later. What we'd also do in the UK was I travelled quite a few horses around England and we'd, you know, I'd take horses from Newmarket to Newcastle, for example. And what the race clubs did for the staff there was second to none. Like, you would have accommodation, they'd put on food, the staff would put the horses in a box, they'd feed them, they'd hang out for a few hours, the staff would get a break, they could have a sleep, they'd get something to eat and then it would properly cater for them. And it would actually be, I looked forward to getting on the road. You know, you'd actually have a bit of a breather for a bit when you get there and then you'd make your way back the next day. So often we'd stay overnight and we'd take, you know, a few horses there and they'd help look after them. And, you know, we're not. We're not resourced in Victoria at the moment to do that. But I think that if this is to continue to go in the direction that it is, that is something Racing Victoria and all race clubs who are keen to hold Twilights need to be factoring in that, you know, having the horses and staff stay for a day or so would be well worthwhile.
Speaker 3Troy? It's really good feedback and I think that's something that we can work towards. So I don't disagree with Sam when it comes to that. We've got a lot of staff. Our staff are imperative. And I don't want to get on here and bang my chest, but I've been banging on about a later start for so long it's not funny. And at the end of the day, we need to make racing the best possible product that we can. So if we need to change our staff, change our rosters, change our schedules, so it's better for the punter, so the punter can come home, finish work in the afternoon, sit down, have a beer, have a glass of lemonade or whatever they want to do and then start punting on our game, it's going to improve things for everybody.
Speaker 2And I love all three codes. So I've grown up following racing and the three codes. And I always think when we have this debate in the gallops, I think about the greyhound and harness racing industries. Like Saturday night, the last race at Menangles at 11 o'clock. Now they still have to get up. They don't get up as early as the thoroughbred trainers, but the, the last race at Melton is at five to 11. Like they're getting home at three or four o'clock in the morning. So, and then with you pushed out the, the gallops meetings further back, then obviously the trots and the greyhounds get pushed back as well. So yeah, it's a, it's an interesting debate because if Sam points out, you're having a chat about the welfare of the participants saying the thoroughbreds, well, it can't be good for the other industries as well. A hundred percent,
Speaker 3but it can't be good for racing. If, if we start reducing prize money as well. And that, and I think, I think, yeah,
Speaker 6sorry, I think what else is, you know, there's, there's just so much research now about the significance of sleep, for example, and you wouldn't find someone in racing who's well rested. It doesn't really exist. And I just think, you know, with women getting armed with more information, mental health and everything like that, it's, it just needs to become a much bigger factor, you know, that's balanced into things. And at the moment it's, it's going for the cash and not actually, um, factoring in anything else.
Speaker 2So the other question I ask, um, so if you've got staff, all right, Troy, and you want to manage your staff and they're going to go to Warrnambool today, or they're going to go and work at night meetings or twilight meetings, um, does the prize money increase cater for your, your bank balance regarding how much you have to pay staff extra time or how you have to put more. You mean per meeting? No. Yeah. Per meeting. Or just say, if you've got Gareth that works for you, my staff are going to Warrnambool.
Speaker 3Um, they get a race day amount plus their hours that they work. Yeah. And if they're going to Flemington, that's the same,
Speaker 2but do you have to put on more staff to say, if I work during the day, I go to Warrnambool, I come back home, I get home late. Yeah. It depends. Um, then do you want me to come back to and do the first shift there at Flemington the next morning? Or you're saying, no, Gareth, you need to have a break. You've had a big day. Um, we'll replace you.
Speaker 3So it's not, it's not a matter of just being, being able to replace someone because we, we actually run things really tightly. And I know exactly what Sam's talking about when it comes to that. Um, ideal in an ideal world. Yeah. Let's do that. Let's, you know, if someone gets home at 11 o'clock, right. Oh, you have the morning off and we'll see you in the afternoon. That's what I'm saying. We need to, we need to fold in and start changing schedules so that we can adapt for this and we can keep people happy and keep them sleeping. Can you do that? But with the staff, it's very, it's very difficult, but we, we need to do it. The alternative is that we start losing prize money. And the game, you know, falls away and we're racing at 11 o'clock at night, like harness is. So we don't want that.
Speaker 2Yeah. It's a, it's a, I don't know what the right solution is. It's, it's a difficult situation for race in Victoria. Obviously they're, they're a non-profit, non-profit organization. So they're there to try and make as much money for the participants that put on the show at the end of the day. And to their credit, cause you could have been critical in previous years about maybe they're spending too much money on the at RV, but they have cut back. They cut back massively. to 20 million dollars so um i don't think they deliberately i don't know matt walsh put out an article who ironically worked for racing victoria so they don't they don't go out there deliberately to um annoy the participants and make it harder for them in my
Speaker 6view there's no there's no malice in what victoria are looking to do it's coming from a place of trying to um make it work yeah exactly and and that's why what i'm arguing is not coming from a place of like yeah um being heavily critical it's just to say that someone's got to be looking after these guys and they don't really have a voice you know so it's it's got to be factored in because you know often it's everything is is is centered around the monetary side of it but it just needs yeah they need their own say in all of this well that's up
Speaker 3that's up to us then sam tell your staff that's going to warner bullet and not getting home till 11 o'clock to have the next
Speaker 6well correct and that's what we do that's what we do now like i also you know the argument i don't run your horses there is so flawed like as you know troy if you if you've got a horse that's suited to a race the owner deserves to have the horse in the race you know that's that's how it
Speaker 2works yeah would the owner understand then to pay extra for that staff to go and win that race at warner bull will they understand that
Speaker 6i don't think that wins maybe yeah if it goes there and runs eight i'm sure they'll be yeah why don't you go somewhere else i
Speaker 2think i think that you've got to have these these these conversations um i think it's important you have them on platforms like this because um if you don't talk about it and more people don't understand where people are coming
Speaker 3and i think it's really yeah it's been fantastic people actually understand what we took sam and sam and i are great mates and don't get me wrong we disagree on this um but we're very good and we're both on the board of the ata and that's why we have the interesting meetings these days it is but that that's why i love having the the younger dynamic on there so that we can get um different perspectives and and we can try and agree we're not always going to agree but um that's what we're there
Speaker 2for um sam how do you go when you um disagree with calvin in those meetings who wins normally get the boxing gloves on he can box a
Speaker 3bit cal yeah he can a
Speaker 2um hierarchy is a beautifully bred galloper um out of collette he was one of my favorites won that golden eagle on that bottomless track there at rose hill um but he was impressive there the other day can he go on with it today sam he's
Speaker 6a talent he's a real talent he's um he's got some tricks up his sleeves so we'll have a couple of us there saddling him today he's not um yes yeah he's not it's not come straightforward for him the whole race day experience and um and you know abiding by what we need him to do but of little doubt he's got got very good ability so if he handles it all well he's um yeah he'd be he'd be right in the game today he'd
Speaker 2be the best bred horse in australia today probably for the week by the bar we out of collette so um obviously he's bred to be a star so do you expect him to win or would you be like should we back him with confidence or should we go so royal the philly by so you think so royals this is sort of a uh stop gap
Speaker 6for her to get to hopefully a wakeful so i think you'd expect to see her get back and and work home i think hierarchy's got a bit more tactical speed he'll probably put himself in the first three or four and um i think you'd just just if you've got the time you'd watch him in the mounting yard you'd watch him go to the gates and if he handled it well then you'd um you'd have something on him
Speaker 2for sure beautiful that will do us i know ethan brown's excited to get a board hierarchy once again today um you've got a few runners across today as well you've got um ria the only other one there in sydney at rose hill dylan gibbons rights your thoughts
Speaker 6there yeah look she's this is sort of a d-day for us you get some soft ground good draw um breeding barn beckons i think if she doesn't put her hand up so um fitting well it just needs to needs to improve did you
Speaker 2go to the king charles with tom kitten or save him for another day we
Speaker 6will save him for the craven place okay saturday week so it's three quarters of a million 1800 meter group two um pretty lucrative and yeah want to get him back in the game and then we might see him on the last day and either the mile or the
Speaker 3last day and then we'll see what we can do with him sam if there was a 2000 meter three-year-old group one on derby day worth four million would you have gone there or still gone to the paddock with call me coach
Speaker 6well call me coach actually pulled up pretty shinsaw so um yeah to be fair he's actually been battling a little bit of shinsawness throughout this prep which is pretty remarkable um very very talented horse i'd love to have said yes we'd be lining up a hundred percent but um jonathan was he floated the idea of going to the cox place and he's been doing a lot of the plate but he um yeah it was taken out of the hand he pulled up shinsaw so he good effort man i haven't
Speaker 2asked i haven't asked mr munns what does he want the derby to stay or does he want the derby to go back to 2000 sam i wouldn't
Speaker 6dare to speak on behalf of jonathan i'll have to text him i'll
Speaker 2have to text him off i forgot to ask him because it was probably the best test case there whatever he was thinking when he's got a horse like i may have
Speaker 3had that conversation with him six months ago might have been 12 months ago yeah
Speaker 2um i wonder
Speaker 3which way was it um to be to be honest i i think that he would like it at 2000 meters but you know what get jonathan on and ask him yeah we will yeah very good when it comes to that sort of
Speaker 2stuff hey sam there's a few text messages some agreeing some disagreeing but i think you would love this one sam should be running racing victoria so there you go on that note we'll leave you i can't afford him yeah i know thanks mate awesome thanks guys there's sam freeman there um there's plenty of text messages you want to get through them now troy um morning all i know it might be a bit extreme but what happens when someone falls asleep at the wheel and is injured as they have been going all day yeah well
Speaker 3we need to stop that sort of stuff and that and that's by scheduling um rosters and stuff like that we avoid that and there's no trainer that would ever want that no matter how much money is going back into racing so it's a silly question ask sam and troy
Speaker 2if the industry could create a platform with stables like theirs could engage a local strapper so they're strapping them in and they're going to be able to do that and they're going to be able to travel to these meetings e.g find a local strapper from warnable it's a really good idea my brother
Speaker 3actually came up with this idea about 12 months ago just couldn't quite get it off the ground but it's a fantastic idea imagine having um professional staff waiting at the the track to do your horse and go from there
Speaker 2why couldn't you get like professionals there'd
Speaker 3be some licensing issues and stuff like that is there oh well there would be because you've got staff that aren't usually with your horses and you're still responsible for them so it's not that easy but it's a great idea
Speaker 2yeah there's professional strappers however that work around the the circuit especially in the in
Speaker 3the breeding game like there's professionals that do uh yearling leading all the time good point
Speaker 2anthony i'm a four-hour drive from warnable and look at getting a train i have a horse in the last at 6 30 the last train is 6 30 ridiculous that's from warren hi we keep hearing trainers can't get their staff early starts they want staff to work more broken shifts the almighty doll the industry wants more help trainers with staff etc that's from keith i don't know where you're going there with that keith sam is a big fan of your horse and i'm a big fan of your horse and i'm a big fan of keith sam is a big fan of your horse and i'm a big fan of your horse and i'm a big fan of your horse um and maybe you need to also speak to the likes of reese goodwin and amy yagi from smaller stables who have been vocal on socials about the twilight racing um and i think we covered off pretty pretty
Speaker 3much uh both sides didn't we i think i think um amy and reese both agree what sam was talking
Speaker 2about yeah and i think reese has got horses at warnable today has he yeah hi guys there's a rule that's oh no tomorrow i should say at warnable hi guys there's a rule that staff need at least 12 if you're putting horses away at 9 p.m at night how can they legally get up at 4 a.m the next day low paid stable hands really need a union to protect their health and conditions
Speaker 3and i um i actually tried to start an association for the staff probably 10 years ago and it didn't get very far because they struggle to stick together i
Speaker 2work for the broadcast i got home from cranbourne at 1 a.m start at corford 8 a.m the next day and that's good for turnover flemington is worse than a 10-hour day saturday with 10 races roll that into country meet sunday which could be anywhere from 6 a.m start they've hit the line in the sand with profit over welfare i understand where you're coming from mark but the broadcasters shouldn't be allowing you to do that
Speaker 3yeah exactly that's uh that's a you like i wouldn't be allowed to do that no i don't think
Speaker 2we'd allow anyone no so there you go um there's plenty of text messages coming through and we'll get to them as the morning unfolds but we'll be here all day now i didn't ask calvin his best but he didn't mind a few i think he likes the cold over the philly today in that two-year-old race um what about you from a punting perspective this week troy
Speaker 3um today i've got we've got two runners he'll rip who he'll run a massive race and uh i think verdot can bounce back actually blake shin on board and i think he'll run a nice race as
Speaker 2well all right then um what about your tip
Speaker 3in the everest oh geez it's hard to get you can't go past car you and i'll be there which i'm uh off to canberra tonight then sydney tomorrow and staying up for the everest i'm really looking forward to i've never been to one
Speaker 2before no they tell me it's out of this world now they're ready to run sale it's happening this week obviously i don't want to bring it up once again but it's been a tough day for your business with that philly scratch tip yeah how do you pronounce her son and son and so she's out that she's not she's out of
Speaker 3the race today but she's still going through
Speaker 2the sale tomorrow yeah and then so will you try and buy her back i've got
Speaker 3another partner in her uh shane morris Morrissey that is very keen to hang on to her, but But at the end of the day, an auction is an auction. And if someone comes over the top of us, so be it. My horses are all for sale when they go to that.
Speaker 2You think enough of her that you reckon. I love her.
Speaker 3Yeah. She's an absolute beast. She's not big, but I tell you what, she's got a heart of a lion.
Speaker 2Yeah. Rural Press. Calvin gave it a good push today. Jaya McNally thinks that why the Philly has race experience, I think Rural Press might be the best of their chances today. Yeah, I think it's got a bit of talent. Do you like this middle day? At Caulfield with
Speaker 3the rail out 13 metres. I think it's very traditional. You remember some time ago, the Thousand Guineas used to be on today. Yeah. And I do think that that has been good pushing it back to Caulfield Cup Day. So I really agree with that. I think it's a nice relevant day. Caulfield gets its moment in the sun, which it deserves. And it's good racing today, isn't it? It's really good racing.
Speaker 2I'm looking forward to it.
Speaker 3And leads into. Saturday. Exactly. It leads into. To Cox Plate Day and then leads into the Flemington.
Speaker 2It'll be a packed joint at Caulfield and Round Week. It's one. It's a great day for the advertisement of racing when it's nearly a sellout. And it's a sellout at Round Week. It's close to a sellout at Caulfield. I think you can still get tickets at $65 at Ticket Tech to celebrate 150 years of the Caulfield Cup. I had an interesting.
Speaker 3I went to the Caulfield launch, the spring racing launch last week. And Ming Dynasties, both his Caulfield Cups were there. And obviously, Dad was with Bart for both of those. And I got a photo of me and my brother riding Ming Dynasty. Oh, I just thought he's sitting on his back. And then a photo of me with the Caulfield Cup. So that was fantastic.
Speaker 2The text message line has gone off. Mainly because of that debate with the Twilight Racing and that Blake Sheen got kicked off for Jamie Spencer on Royal Supremacy. Well done, mate. Hey, I've got to give it to you. Like with you trying to obviously having your own business with Team Causton's racing with Will Larkin. And then doing a job that you don't get paid for as the president of the Trainers Association. And there'll be a lot of trainers that would agree or disagree with you. And then you're going to try and make the right decision that you think for the betterment of the game and the future of the sport. I think racing is lucky to have people that care like you do. I know there's a lot of people in the game that do as well. But you're actually trying to do something about it by doing the role that you're doing. Yeah, thanks, Gareth.
Speaker 3I'm a bit all out there at the moment. My wife calls me Eddie everywhere. Yeah, yes. And she's. Yes. I think she's a bit sick of seeing me everywhere. But one thing I am is extremely passionate about racing and I'm extremely passionate about it being successful.
Speaker 2And as Sam pointed out, with all the debate that we've had today regarding mergers with the different clubs. And there's a lot of proud and like well-respected people that are with all of these three clubs in Melbourne. And everyone has their own different opinion on how they're going. Should they merge? But at the end of the day, what. If everyone's passionate. And love for the game can come together and we can try and get close. And make it better. Yeah, make it better.
Speaker 3I reckon it'd be a really good podcast to have a few people in the room. Yeah. That can sit there and talk about this and about mergers and the clubs and why clubs wouldn't want to do this sort of stuff for the betterment of racing. Maybe we should look at doing something like that. Yeah, we're going to try and do that.
Speaker 2I would love to get Jonathan Munns on this show. It'd be a great podcast. Yeah. Kylie Rogers or Vin Cox now. Yeah, Michael Brown. He's so passionate as well. All the team there at them. At Moonee Valley. Because I think they'll have. You would listen to their sides of their stories. But at the end of the day, they all have their heart in the right place that they want this game to be.
Speaker 3Everybody. Yeah. We're all in it because we love racing. Yeah. We just need to all get together.
Speaker 2Yeah. Mike at Kanga to be the chair of the meeting. That'd be some fun. Yeah. Good on you. There's no one more passionate than Kanga, I can tell you. He'll rip. We'll get on heel rip today.
Speaker 3Yeah. You can have something on heel rip with confidence.
Speaker 2And since you've been on this show, your stable's flying at the moment. So well done. Good on you, Troy. Thanks, Gary. There's Troy Causton's there. I think Tony Ottobre will be our special guest next. He's got an announcement to make regarding his two slots there for those Southside slot races at Cranbourne and Pakenham later in the spring and the early part of the summer.
Speaker 1Text us on 0499 736 736. Live across Australia.
Speaker 2This. Welcome back to Giddy Up 0499 736 736. I'm hearing as well with that conversation that we had with She's Alibi and Wide Inc Racing Victoria or Moonee Valley or even Ladbrokes put an offer to Moods and Fred Noski to get her to stay after even what happened there on Saturday in that Might and Power Stakes when she ran out of her skin to finish second over the 2,000 metres. That was her first. Crack at 2,000 metres and get her to stay in Melbourne for a Cox play. I reckon they might have approached them as well. That could be the whisper I'm hearing that they said, OK, then there might be something that we can put together for you to try and entice you to stay in Victoria. But as a few people have already text through, Gareth, you're only four once. And this is an opportunity where She's Alibi will get to compete against her own age group. Over 15. 100 metres, but for $10 million. So, yeah, and they've already committed to that. And why wouldn't you go down that path, despite what maybe that a few of the different organisations might have thrown at the She's Alibi team to try and get her to stay for a Cox play. But, yeah, it's interesting. 928, Tony Ottobre, not far away. He will be my special guest, of course. The owner of Pride of Jenny, and he's got a slot in the Southside Slot Series. So I think he's going to announce his horses for the Meteorite and the Supernova next here on Giddy Up.
Speaker 7Pride of Jenny had reserves. Two and a half. Another will. Mr. Brightside's beat. And Zambardo down the outer. Pride of Jenny at the 150. Still a good two and a half. Treasure of the moment. Zambardo. Pride of Jenny going great guns. It's a three-peat that has thrilled us all.
Speaker 2Pride of Jenny wins. Oh, yes. Pride of Jenny will be in Sydney on Saturday to compete in the King Charles taking on, I think, four or five horses. But Autumn Glow will be there. And so will Char Wolf. And her owner, Tony Ottobre, joins us. Tony, hello to you. Welcome back to Giddy Up, mate. G'day, Gareth. How are you, buddy? Mate, how is the champ?
Speaker 8Yeah, she's in fantastic order, mate. She is, I don't know, mate. She's just a blessing in disguise, this horse. It's unbelievable what she's doing at the moment.
Speaker 2Can you beat Autumn Glow and Char Wolf in a King Charles?
Speaker 8Well, it's a bloody tough ask, I'm sure. We wouldn't be going up there thinking we can't do it. She's at the moment. She's in a. A different headspace than normal. She's galloping a lot smoother. She seems to be doing a lot more effortlessly. So, yeah, we'll be able to see what she can bring to the table this Saturday. And I'm looking forward to that.
Speaker 2Are you betting Uncle Tony?
Speaker 8Just a little bit.
Speaker 2So, like, $100,000? Just a little bet. I'll just have $100,000 on her. As soon as I saw she was, like, backed off the mat with Tab, I thought, oh, she's definitely going. She's going to the King Charles.
Speaker 8Well, it's not that much, but it probably would be an emotional bet. Yeah, yeah. I mean, Char Wolf's an absolute superstar. He's won two in a row. And, you know, Joe Pride, he's a brilliant trainer. He'll have him peaked for this. They would be targeting the King Charles as his main race to win. So, it's going to be a tough ask. It's going to be really interesting because he'll be at his peak. Autumn Glow, of course, she's a superstar. And, yeah, it just depends on how the race pans out. Only half a dozen horses. It should give everybody a fair crack at winning the race. The only thing that can slow us down a bit is win conditions. If there's no win conditions, you know, we're fine. That's why you'll see that at the Valley, the pride of Jenny's always gone. It's done extremely well because it's in such a bowl that, you know, there's no wind at all. And, you know, a couple of gusts of wind can actually put horses off when they're going at top gear and leading, whereas the guys out the back are getting cover. And that's our main concern is wind factors.
Speaker 2Was it a difficult decision not to go to a cocks plate with her this time around?
Speaker 8No, not really. Not at all. We've already, we tried it once before and it didn't work out. And our goal is the Empire Rose. So I want to come back to Flemington. The racing, the race course of Australia and knock off the Empire Rose once again. The atmosphere there is great. Victorians at Flemington absolutely love that kind of racing. And we've had some great success there. And, yeah, this is a bill. build up to that particular race we didn't have any other choice but to uh to tackle this mile race in sydney because there's we haven't got a mile racer on saturday on caulfield cup day that she could have entered into so you know we need to plan her correctly um into what we would like to win and that's the empire rose
Speaker 2um so she goes to the king charles and then she'll go to the empire rose and then we'll get set um for another autumn so she'll continue to race on which is exciting
Speaker 8yeah yeah absolutely but it's going to be up to karen um if he wants to just throw in a a nom in some of the other races such as the um the sprint there's the uh sprint championships the mile and the 2000 meters on champions day and and of course there's always a race up at um down at western australia where um would you
Speaker 2go there uncle toe would you go there uncle toe would you go to a northerly over 1800 meters to western australia you
Speaker 8know something if she's going if she's going well um i'd love to take her there because i'd love the western australian people that uh racing people to actually see her physically yeah it's more like you know um so she just she won australian horse of the year and she was voted that by all the other states uh other than victoria so you know all the other states had a had a saying um who'd be the race horse of the year and of course western australia um you know would have uh more than likely picked her as well so no i feel i sort of owe it to western australian racing fans that you know to take her over there and let them all have a look at her so that
Speaker 2would be my only place
Speaker 8robert but it's all up it's all up to karen that's where we're going
Speaker 2to go mate so that would be would you go railway and northerly or just the northerly with her
Speaker 8at wait for age we definitely only go if we go it'd only be for the one race yeah uh 1800 meters is really where she's at yeah and uh 1600 she's really good 2000 meters she just gets there but 1800 is uh really um her sweet spot we we might
Speaker 2be getting a heavy track there on saturday or a slow track it's going to be rain affected anyway what's her perfect surface these days uh good
Speaker 8fours really where she she's that's perfect for her um she has handled the heavy before and and the slow her record is quite good there i think she's at um four in the heavy for two wins so she can't handle it but ideally um chiao wolf can handle better obviously because he's he's an absolute mudlark we've seen what he did last year in uh at the spring carnival at flemington so um yeah he's the main danger yeah um i'm more worried about chiao wolf than um autumn glow but not autumn glow but i'm not being disrespectful to autumn glow as a champion but this is going to be a sort of different race than what she would be used to so it's going to be high pressure from uh go to woe um with little time to actually relax a little bit so yeah uh and chow wolf well we've seen he's got the runs on the board so
Speaker 2she starts regardless anyway if it's a heavy track you still go around
Speaker 8yeah look we do need this run and they're under her belt it's either we go there or we trial um but um you know like it's a five million dollar race mate it's yeah yeah even if she runs third she gets 425 000 yeah and it's just interestingly enough that'll take her over the mark which will which will um give her the top she'll be in the top 10 money earners of australia ever so yeah she needs to break that uh 14 million dollar barrier and um she'll be in the top 10 of all-time um stakes winning um what price money winning horses so yeah that'd be an effort in itself now
Speaker 2you've got um you're part of the south side slot series so you've got um to find two horses for the media ride which is at cranbourne on the 21st of november and the supernova over 1400 meters on the 12th of december um at packenham you've got a big team of jenny horses what are you doing for these slot races tony yeah well
Speaker 8south side racing you're doing a fantastic job down there and you know it's great to actually put that in place you're doing a fantastic job down there and you know it's great to actually put that in place after the spring carnival down at flemington there's not much on offer after that and uh yeah they put up a couple of one million dollar races that uh at cranbourne and i think that's a fantastic idea and i um i supported that by buying a slot two years ago so this is the third year running um when uh prior to jenny one australian horse of the year i went a little bit crazy and i bought i bought a horse that i thought would be a good sprinter by and we named it jenny the fox so so i paid a little bit more than i normally would pay for a horse um but she's giving us a lot of joy uh at the moment and um she's going extremely well she ran fourth in the meteorite last year yeah to uh to jigsaw um so we're taking her back again um she raced last week so the prime in her for the meteorite and quite possibly the supernova as well so generally i've got 1600 meter plus horses um but she's one of the only ones that's uh you know i've got a lot of horses that i've got in the sprinting um in the sprinting area um of my stables yeah so
Speaker 2jenny the fox at the moment she'll represent you in the meteorite and also the supernova more
Speaker 8than likely the supernova but we'll see how it goes there's three weeks i think november 21st is the um meteorite and i think three weeks later is the supernova so we'll just see what uh where we're at but she did it last year she did both and then she went on to um the magic millions um in january she ran second got written in the photo for the million dollar race so she's quite competitive she's come back in super order um last uh saturday she's unfortunate she was three wide no cover for the entire race and uh she still went to the line pretty well so i was very pleased with her run last week
Speaker 2um now tony we've got a slot in the both these races so the meteorite and supernova if you want to um freshen up pride of jenny for the 1400 meter race we'd love to have her mate that would make my day that would be one of the greatest days i'll ever have if i had pride of jenny on my side for giddy up um just freshen her up after the empire rise forget about perp they'll hate me saying that and we'll just go straight straight to packing them mate i'll pack out the joint
Speaker 8well i can guarantee you that won't be happening keep dreaming keep dreaming buddy
Speaker 2i thought i thought i'd ask um anyway how's the pride of jenny website and the merchandise going how do we get some
Speaker 8mate kyle kyle uh thompson um started all that up fantastic young man he's about 26 so um he's been a jenny fan for a couple of years and um i don't know where it came about but at some stage uh you know i thought you know prior to jenny website to go really well because you know we can't really do a lot um you know trying to save the world yeah yeah so um we're just talking about that and he said yeah you know well let's start one up and maybe you can do it you can run it you can make the profit but 10 goes to a brain cancer charity and i'd be happy with that so he's grabbed it by the uh by the horns pulled by the horns and uh has run with it done a great job i mean there's some great stories there's some great pictures and videos um so the pride of jenny fans can really have a look at that and uh they can go ahead and buy the um some of the memorabilia that comes along with her and those little plushies are a big hit at the moment they sort of seem to be popping up everywhere we might uh buy ourselves one of the plushies and go away on holidays and take pictures of her uh yeah i've been bloody different positions so um yeah it's a great idea and uh yeah kyle thompson's done a good job uh good man now
Speaker 2tell me this tony if i gave you a hundred dollars what would you do with it this week with your horses how many winners have you
Speaker 8got for us i'd put it on um king snits on saturday in the three-year-old 2000 meters uh race at caulfield
Speaker 2beautiful king snits that'll do us nicely hey go and get them in sydney mate we appreciate your time as always um i don't want to wish you too much luck in these flight races i'd love to beat you tony i'd love to beat you but if i if i get beat you can beat me all right all
Speaker 8right buddy yeah you take care my my very good friend good on you hey
Speaker 2tony everyone's like i've got a heap of text messages now from wa they have woken up this morning and they've heard you just say what you've said so they say bring on the northerly yeah well
Speaker 8they'll pick you up from the
Speaker 2airport they said tony i'll take you out you've been booked for three lunches
Speaker 8already yeah well i'm sure the western australia racing club over there would actually help us out to get her over there um and that wouldn't be a problem at all but yeah look if she's going well she will definitely go to western australia well
Speaker 2there you go thanks for that tony we appreciate your time as always and uh good luck um for the rest of the carnival especially with our girl pride of jenny in the um king charles and then the empire oh it's good on you mate there's tony otterbray 943 steve griffin the ceo of greyhound racing new south wales will join me next join the
Speaker 1conversation text us on 0 4 9 7 3 6 7 3 6 Live across Australia, this is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 2Welcome back to Giddy Up, Gareth Hall with you on this Wednesday morning. Plenty of text messages coming through. A lot regarding the staff situation in racing and twilight racing. Mixed responses from our listeners. Totally agree with Sam. Staff are not machines, neither are jockeys. Tire staff is not great. We go on about the well-being of the horse. What about the staff looking after the horses? Be realistic. So Sam Freeman going to race any horses during twilight races? What else have we got? It's a health and safety issue. Ridiculous. The figures Troy is using are based on three competitive totes, and now there is one. The cost savings for TAB will not result in increased revenue for the racing codes, and you all know that. Well, we don't know that. You have to put the races on when the customers want to bet. I bet. Restaurant owners would love to have dinner service finished between or before 6 p.m. With 10 horses in the last twilight race, that may affect 10 stable hands in the whole industry to get home late. Really, Sam? Hi, gents. Regarding twilight night racing, what effect does it have on the horse who generally starts their day at 4 or 5 a.m.? Do they have to be trained different times? That's from Tim from Warrnambool. I think horses, what I've learned with horses, that they're used to. It's a routine, so I think that they would get up regardless. I didn't want 6 a.m. or midnight international flight departures from Tala Marine, but changed my lifestyle and adapted. Horse racing and its staff need to do the same. That's from Greg. Love listening to the guys and their thoughts on topical issues and their collective desires to move forward for the industry they love. I've got a consulting IT background. I would love to be able to chat to them tonight to see if there's some use cases on scheduling which can be resolved. Happy to do this when free. Once 6 p.m. comes around, my wife and I watch the news and home and away. So our punting day is over. We don't bet on twilight meetings, so turnover is less from us. And that's from Laurie. A lot of people do the opposite. So, yeah, it's a good debate to have so many different opinions. We'll take a break. Steve Griffin, the CEO of Greyhound Racing New South Wales, to join me next. And then Zach Burton. He's confirmed now quarter past 10 this morning. Welcome back to Giddy Up, Gareth Hall with you. And you can witness history when the Ladbrokes Million Dollar Chase brings down the curtain on Wentworth Park on October 16th. And Greyhound Racing New South Wales have announced a new home for Metropolitan Greyhound Racing after, of course, well, the next chapter for Greyhound Racing in New South Wales with Wentworth Park, of course, having its final meeting on Friday night. And the CEO of Greyhound Racing New South Wales, Steve Griffin, joins us.
Speaker 9G'day, Steve. G'day, Gareth.
Speaker 2Thanks for joining us, mate. So you announced during the week that you've got a new home for Metro Greyhound Racing in New South Wales.
Speaker 10Yeah, we have. And it was just great. We wanted to make that announcement before, obviously, Friday. So as people are saying goodbye to Wendy, they know where the next spiritual home of the sport's going to be located. And they get a sense of what it's going to look like once we finish construction in a few years' time. Look, it's disappointing we weren't able to make a smoother transition. We were hoping to get a couple more years' extension out of the Wentworth Park lease. But the government's made its decision, so we just need to move forward in the best way we can. And now we've got a very solid plan and we've got a very, very good precinct that we're going to develop. And I think the main thing in all of it is, apart from being, you know, it's going to be a fantastic racing precinct, it's going to be able to give the sport an ability to earn revenue outside of racing, which is critical today in today's racing codes, where you get ebbs and flows of wagering, as we know, and that are affected by economic downturns and so forth. So we're building something that's going to really sustain the sports into the future.
Speaker 2There was critics saying, it's fair with the government that you didn't get the money that you deserve with finishing up there at Wentworth Park and enough money to build your next home. Will you have enough money to build the home for Metro racing that you want to have going forward?
Speaker 10Yeah, look, we're still in discussions with the government in relation to compensation. That discussion hasn't finished. So I certainly know the government has given us feedback that they're very open to, to revising that offer. And so we're hoping in the next few weeks, we'll get a bit of visibility of what that looks like. And I'm pretty confident it's going to be much better than the original offer, because that was cobbled together very quickly, Gareth. You know, they made that decision on a Saturday and they made the announcement on the Monday. So they didn't have a lot of time to line up their ducks. So I think they've had a lot more time to think about it. We've been able to make representations to them and explain to them what we want to build. And they're very open to that. They're open to the fact and supportive of the fact that we want to build in Western Sydney, which is helpful. So I'm pretty comfortable that we'll get a better offer from the government because they are supporting ground racing, which is great to see. But we also have been saving our money too, and we've done well in that regard. So, you know, we're confident we've got the money. Look, if we have to push it further, and these things always sometimes add to costs. So we always got the government who's agreed that we can come back to them if we need to get a loan. How much money do you need, Steve? I'm absolutely confident. Between $50 and $70 is what the experts are telling us. But, you know, cost of construction these days, it goes up rapidly. So, you know, we're looking at two or three years time, you know, we could add extra costs to that. So, look, we've got the financial reserves certainly to do the lower end of that budget. But if we need to go and extend ourselves, we've certainly got the capacity to repay a small loan from the government to make sure it's delivered to the government. But we've certainly got the capacity to repay a small loan from the government to make sure it's delivered to the government. We've certainly got the capacity to repay a small loan from the government to make sure it's delivered to the government. it's delivered to the sport in New South Wales.
Speaker 2What kind of tracks? Like that Kew Parklands track, he's got three tracks. So what will you be looking to build there at Richmond?
Speaker 10Yeah, similar. We're going to have three tracks. So we had a working group of key trainers who sort of fed into what we should build there. And they wanted a track similar to the Geelong track with a big one-turn track and a two-turn track on the inside. We're probably going to separate them. We've had a look at Geelong and we probably want to separate them a little bit because I'm not quite sure that the Geelong works all that well. But so we certainly want to have the two, the one-turn and the two-turn. And we'll have the straight track as we already have out at Richmond already, where it'll be the same, in the same positions and other thing. But having those three tracks at the one precinct makes a lot of sense.
Speaker 2What's the best for the welfare of the dogs these days? When you do your study with the different tracks or is it important to have options for the trainers and the canine athlete to have different opportunities to compete at the different structured tracks?
Speaker 10Yeah, I think there's room for straight track racing. And I don't think we've done enough to sort of develop that into something that really the pundits will go for. And plus we're running. We're running in the middle of the day. So, you know, we really haven't given a crack at night and that's where we operate. We operate in the night. We shouldn't try to compete against thoroughbreds during the day, but we should really be looking at straight track racing at night under lights. And we want to do it on synthetic turf and use drones and so forth just to make it a bit more innovative. So we'll be looking to do that next year. But look, straight track racing statistically is much safer. There's no two ways about it. And so we're committed to doing two more straight tracks and use of files over the next few years. And we think a good mix of networks would be three tracks and then about 12 or 13 traditional one and two turn tracks. And if you have that good mix, I think that then opens it up to, you know, different types of dogs. And they're all a bit different. And the trainers say to me, there's just some dogs that can never do oval track. Well, if we've got some straight track racing, then that creates a pathway. And if we've got a dog that's not a dog, then we've got to do it. So it's a great thing to be offering both modalities of racing, because again, it keeps the greyhounds and ensures they have a racing career and we don't have to rehome them as pups.
Speaker 2Yeah. There's plenty of questions coming through for you, Steve, as well. Obviously, he's got everybody talking with this new announcement regarding the new home of Metro Greyhound Racing there in New South Wales at Richmond. I'm just going to take a quick break if that's okay. And then we'll come back and we'll continue on this chat because we've got to, of course, look forward to this million-dollar chase, the final night there at Wentworth Park on Friday night. They've packed out the joint. It's a sellout. You can't get a ticket. It will be some night as they farewell one of the great iconic venues across the three codes in Australian racing. Time for a quick break. We'll come back and continue our chat with the CEO of Greyhound Racing in New South Wales, Steve Griffin-Neck.
Speaker 1this is giddy up with gareth
Speaker 2hall welcome back to giddy up my special guest here is the ceo of greyhound racing new south wales steve griffin um they've just announced that in a couple of years time they'll have a new home of greyhound racing in richmond there in new south wales with three tracks um so with the three tracks will it be like was will you be able to close down tracks in new south wales and um make full use of this investment there at richmond look at the moment
Speaker 10we just don't foresee any need to close any more tracks we're actually uh hoping another one lithgow next month and it'll be one of the best tracks in the country uh was out there last week it looked fantastic and can't wait for racing to start there so you know people just carry on about the sports being closed by itself it's just a lot of rubbish yeah um at the end of the day uh the new precinct will just add value uh to our footprint and create a new spiritual home for the sport that we can all be proud of when we go there and to race and you know the feature races like the mdc we're having on friday so it won't crowd out any racing in new south wales it'll just be the jewel on the crown and that's the way it will be we've already done our right sizing in the sport as you know last year a lot of people are unhappy about that and unhappy that i that i did it but at the end of the day we've now got lots of clubs the clubs that are there are now very profitable as a result of that so now we've got the right size footprint for the sport to move forward um as i said we'll be developing a couple of more straight tracks over the next couple of years to add to that footprint and i think that'll be the right size for the sport moving forward over the next two decades how many times would you
Speaker 2race a week at this this new facility it'll
Speaker 10be at least three probably more i think certainly twice in terms of the straight track racing but i think the one and two turns would definitely race once a week and potentially the straight track once but you'd want to get good return here out of your investment and we're going to put you know up could be something like 70 million dollars investment so we want to certainly want to see a return and we'd certainly think you know a minimum of four races a week would would
Speaker 2take yeah we just lost steve we'll see if we can get him back there um he was just talking about how many times they would race at this new facility that will be built in a few years time there at richmond um and i think that'll be one of those things that we're going to be able to see if we can get him back in a few years time i think that'll be one of the things that we'll be able to see if we can get him back in a few years time i think they're going to spend up to 70 million dollars hopefully they'll get the funding the majority of that from the new south wales government but as you pointed out they're still in discussions with the government regarding what compensation they will be getting with the closure of wentworth park that iconic venue that will come um that it's um time hosting greyhound racing will come to an end on friday after 94 years um and when you think of greyhound racing in this country you think of wentworth park it is one of the most iconic venues in the country it's one of the most iconic venues across any coat here in australia if you're in sydney and you say i'm off to wentworth park people know that you're going to the greyhounds um and i don't think you can say that about too many venues outside of the thoroughbred industry these days like obviously harold parks now um being closed for a while it's gone they've gone to menangle mooney valley for the trots and victoria's now of course at melton so um yeah it'll be interesting to see what happens now with this new chapter in new south wales but it'll be a a night of celebration and it'll also be a sad night there at wentworth park on friday night and steve it is a sellout mate um 94 years of history comes to an end there on friday night how are you feeling about all of this yeah
Speaker 11look i'm most of all uh i'm hoping that it doesn't rain too much we've got a fair bit of rain up here and i don't want it to ruin the event but you know i think everyone i was there on saturday night uh to say say farewell to ronnie arnold and ron but um you know you always have a bit of a tinge of sadness obviously um you know something i went to and since the 1980s and so it's obviously everyone's going to have a lot of mixed feelings about it it has been the spiritual home for the sport for so long 96 years so obviously you know that's going to play out but we just want people to come along on on the night and make one more lasting memory and we've got a great event uh plan and lots of great activities and and people will be able to walk on the track and we'll take a little memento away of the track and and so we want to do all that in a way that respects the history of the place and gives people that fond memory and lasting memory uh of such a significant icon in the sport yeah
Speaker 2um and there'll be how many people you're
Speaker 11expecting we're expecting certainly over 6 000 we've sold out a few weeks ago so it'll be it'll be packed and and we've gone to extra lengths to make sure we've got pop-up stands everywhere so there's been no queuing so yeah um you know as i said let's hope it doesn't rain too much we have a tendency to have drizzle yeah every mdc um but you know a little bit of drizzle won't dampen the dampen the enthusiasm but um just like it to be reasonable weather
Speaker 2and and for people to have a great night we've got about 20 or 30 text messages come through for you steve i haven't got enough time to go through all of them but i think the most common question i'm getting at the moment is what is the relationship like at the moment with greyhound racing new south wales and and i think it's going to be a lot of fun and the new south wales greyhound brainers owners and trainers association which is the gpata yeah i i i sort
Speaker 11of raised this in a in a media release on uh yesterday at the end of the day i think people get confused about javada's role in the sport and i people think that they're they're regulated they're not the pra no um during this w is the pra we're the ones responsible under the law to make sure that the sport is administered well uh we get maximum returns of investment and back to participants but seemingly people think that javada's got to do certain things and and be in charge of those sort of things and they just don't understand the dynamic um i've got javada's got a role it's a it's a grand racing club just like there are that there's mrc
Speaker 2and the atc and you know correct
Speaker 11mate exactly that yes they're they're originally an advocacy uh welfare body but they've morphed into running tracks so they ground racing club we registered just like any other ground racing club and at the end of the day um you know we we're happy to work with all clubs to make sure we get the best interest of the sport but the jabota is not does not run the sport it does not administer the sport and that was just the point i was making yesterday look look there's no ill will in that sense we just want to make sure like any relationship there's always sometimes some conflict uh so re-establish boundaries and that's what we're seeing here but we just got to have a willingness for everyone to work together in the best interest of the sport and as i said yesterday was just me telling telling everybody um despite i don't know what the historical uh aspects were but at the end of the day it's gmsw that makes the call on where the tracks go uh and we obviously we base that on on good feedback and consultation with everybody but it's it's people had this view that it's jabota and i just don't understand where does jabota
Speaker 2want to go well obviously
Speaker 11they want to do a range of things and and they have a view about their ability to deliver metropolitan racing so and other things so but at the end of the day it's gmsw's job to take all that on board and make the decisions what's in the best interest of the sport at the end of the day we're the ones that have the license with the government and are responsible for it and we take that obviously very seriously um and it's our job to get the best return on participants um and you know jabota being a club certainly has its right to to you know let us know what they want to do and how they want to do it but at the end of the day we've got to be there to make the call and yes sometimes people aren't happy with that call but you know nine times out of ten i think people are
Speaker 2yeah hey we appreciate your time and clearing out clearing up a few things for us here this morning um steve but we wish you the best of luck on friday night it will be a it'll be a night many people won't ever forget the final ever meeting at this iconic venue wentworth park we'll be there i can't wait to get back to winnie park it's been a wonderful venue and we wish you the very best of luck with your team there that meeting friday night thanks for joining us as always and bring on the million dollar chase absolutely thanks garrett see you friday there we go steve griffin the ceo of greyhound racing new south wales bag of tips coming up next
Speaker 1join the conversation text us on live across australia this is giddy up with gareth hall the giddy up bag of tips for oz equipment rentals supplying equipment to the construction mining and roadworks industries ozequipment.com back to
Speaker 2giddy up it is time now to find you some winners on this big day of racing right across the country but once again caulfield will take center stage with the running of the time on and kunji handicap which is in the latter part of that meeting at caulfield today this is the second of their um three-day carnival and sam bennett's hats off to you sam well done to your team that track played beautifully there on saturday
Speaker 12morning garth yeah thanks for that obviously a pleasing day from our end um yeah two more to go people
Speaker 2are quick to criticize but they should pat you on the back when you completely dominate so you got the rail at 13 meters today what are we expecting
Speaker 12yeah that's right rail out 13 so we're obviously there uh about two and a bit of light marking there in the sort of the first you'd say probably three lanes at the front straight um i'd imagine they probably use those lanes up early and look to the middle of the track with us aerating the outside two metres.
Speaker 2Yep. So where do you think they'll get to?
Speaker 12Yeah, they obviously don't want to go too far. As I said, we've aerated the outside two and then we obviously hosted Gallops there yesterday and the week previous sort of inside of that aerated lane. So I'd say, yeah, through the middle of the track later in the car, I would have thought. But the inside, it's recovered quite well considering and I would have thought that they'd at least use it for the first three or four races.
Speaker 2And how's the preparation going for Caulfield Cup Day?
Speaker 12Yeah, going well. I was contemplating being hands-off with it with the forecast we had for Monday in terms of rain that didn't quite eventuate, which was unfortunate. But yeah, look, it'll pretty much be watering this evening, watering Thursday and Friday into Saturday, which looks to be a nice warm day with a top of 25. So we'll have to ensure there's enough juice in it to get through the day.
Speaker 2Any wind conditions today to report that might have an effect on the pattern?
Speaker 12They forecast a south-east. It's basically 15 to 20 k's. At the moment, it's tending more southerly. But maximum gusts is just over 20 k's. So I wouldn't have thought that play too big of a part in how the race is a run today and, you know, a top of 16 degrees and overcast. I don't think the track will improve at any great rate.
Speaker 2Good on you, Sam. Good luck today and for the rest of the week.
Speaker 12Cheers, mate. Appreciate that.
Speaker 2There's Sam Bennett. Now, Myles Fitz is not far away and Benny Caluzzi, but Zach Burton's been good enough. He's going to join us at 10.15. So we might take a break. We'll come back. We'll come back with Zach Burton to discuss quickly the barrier draw for Koeing Rising and his reaction. I haven't heard from Zach just yet to see what he has to say. So we'll listen to the champ straight after this here on Giddy Up and then we'll have our preview of Kunji Day at Caulfield this afternoon with the magic man, Myles Fitzner and Benny Caluzzi. The build-up to the Everest is something else and all of the talk is Koeing Rising. He drew barrier number 11 yesterday at the barrier draw and his champion rider, Zach Burton, live from Hong Kong, joins us now on Giddy Up. Zach, hello to you.
Speaker 13Good morning, Gareth.
Speaker 2Your first reaction?
Speaker 13I don't. To be honest, the barrier, it's not what's worrying me, it's the weather. I think he can handle any barrier. From 11 there, he's just going to slide forward outside the leader and if the inside is off, which it might be, he's probably going to be in the best part of the track anyway. But, yeah, the weather watch is the more important part. But, you know, there's nothing we can do about that. He's a gelding, he's a racehorse, he's going to race. People are starting to speculate whether he's actually going to take his place in the field or not. Yeah. He will run. Yep. And we'll see how we go.
Speaker 2So, we'll just talk about the barriers and then we'll get onto the track. Are you happy that Tempted, your biggest danger, has drawn barrier number one?
Speaker 13I don't think it's the end of the world for her. She drew inside last year as well and followed the fence around. I think if the track is soft, everyone will be getting off the fence and she'll get that nice run through the inside on the fence. So, I don't see it as a big negative like other people. Of course, she does like to track up, peel out and let go, but I don't think – I would have been more concerned for her if she had have drawn sort of mid-pack and been one off the fence in the middle of a couple of horses getting bottled around during the run and not been able to get out. So, I think barrier one is actually a bit of an asset for her.
Speaker 2Tactically, however, can you keep an eye on her because you know where she's going to be?
Speaker 13I won't be keeping an eye on her, no. I'll be facing the front and keeping an eye on what's going on ahead of me. But, you know, having drawn barrier one, sometimes they can be sucked into trying to take a more prominent position and we know she's better when she's given a bit of a chance. So, Cad's going to have to find his rhythm there. You know, does he use the barrier and lay up a little bit closer with the soft ground or does he ride her quiet and trust that she's going to get through it and run us down?
Speaker 2Obviously, you're a rooster's man, so you've got more connections than anyone around the Randwick region. They had over 60 mils there last night. The track at the moment's rated a heavy eight. What are you hearing come Saturday?
Speaker 13What am I hearing? Well, I've got lots of friends in Australia, as you know, and they feel like they need to play the weatherman. I'm getting constant updates of the weather. They're sending me videos of the rain coming down. It's a bit annoying, to be honest. I'd rather not be worried about it. But they feel like they need to play the weatherman. They feel like they want to be a part of it. And they're certainly sending me as much info as they can. But, yeah, anyway, it hasn't looked good. There's been plenty of rain coming down.
Speaker 2This is what Hazy had to say yesterday. Obviously, we're having – that was the – we had the media conference there or he was talking at the Barry draw after he drew Barry 11. But Emma Friedman and David Hay – Emma Friedman and Greg Radley asked him the question about a heavy track, and this is what he had to say. What's the number where you start to get a little fearful? I think five, six, and seven I can tolerate. Eight, I'd start to worry. Nine, I'd **** myself. I thought he was the positive one, Zach.
Speaker 13Well, that is him being positive. So him showing a little bit of reservation rings a bit of an alarm bell there. But, no, listen, there's nothing we can do about it. He's either going to handle it or he's not. All it's going to do is bring him back to the rest of the field. But how much is it going to bring him back? We're going to find out.
Speaker 2What's your gut feel? If it's a heavy eight, do you think he'll handle it okay?
Speaker 13My gut feel is we're going to be okay.
Speaker 2Yeah. Well, if you said he wasn't, we might get $2 or $2.50, Zach. So I wonder what price you'll start now. Like I was listening to a few of the different traders for the different organizations here in this country. They're thinking maybe you could get $2 if it's a heavy eight.
Speaker 13$1.80. Yeah, I'd certainly be surprised if he wasn't to blow in the market to a large degree, actually. You know, you've got some track and distance specialists there at Randwick that likes off-ground up against a horse that's very tight in the market and we don't know what we're going to get. So you'd think it's going to level out a bit.
Speaker 2Take us inside your thinking now. Do you have to ride him differently if it's a heavy track? So how would you go about it, trying to get him to find some rhythm? So what can you do to help him?
Speaker 13Yeah, so that's a good question, Gareth, because I'm used to riding him on dry surfaces that I have a good understanding of what his rhythm is and what he's capable of, but that's completely different on the soft ground. So I'm just going to have to try and feel it as we go. My feeling is, you know, I don't want to disappoint him. I want to continue to allow him just to use his action and glide along at whatever speed comfortable that is for him. Whether he can keep up with the leader or not, we'll find out. If that's the case, I'll have to try and help him through the ground a little bit, but if he's handling it, then I'll just keep him in that rhythm and hopefully when I let him go, he's got enough there. But I think the trial at Rambic last week, he had a nice couple-length buffer on the field until he pricked his ears and he was on the wrong leg coming around the corner and he gave up that ground until a ninja came to him and then sort of went with him. If he's to go more of a race speed and he's got that two, three-length gap on ninja and some of the other horses that have to then make up that ground on him, he's only going to find one or two lengths and that makes it a very interesting race. And if he happens to get through it nicely and he finds three or four, well, you know, that's going to be more than enough. But, yeah, I don't know. I'll just have to feel him as he goes on the day.
Speaker 2Yeah. When do you think that you'll know? Is it after 100 metres or until you've got him? Until you let him go?
Speaker 13I think I'll get a pretty good feel sort of half mile out on how he's going on the ground. But it won't be until we top the rise and we let him go that I'll know, you know, whether he's relishing the ground or not. Are you enjoying this build-up? There's nothing like it, really. It's a 12-month build-up that just seems to get put on steroids 10 days out with the way he trials. But, you know, it's great to be a part of it again.
Speaker 2Yeah. Yeah. Hey, we can't wait to see you back here. So when do you arrive? Friday morning. All right, then. So you play a round of golf and then get ready to go.
Speaker 13I don't think I'll be playing golf this week. The forecast doesn't look like it's going to allow that. I'll just take it pretty easy. I've got a few things to do.
Speaker 2Yeah, you'll probably have 25 media conferences to do when you arrive here, mate. What's your best tonight, your best ride?
Speaker 13Oh, jeez. Shooting to win.
Speaker 2All right, shooting.
Speaker 13Shooting to win deserves to win. Whether he can or not, he's a tricky horse that doesn't like to win, but he's going to get his chance. If he doesn't win, he's going to be second or third.
Speaker 2Tom wants to know, who do you think your biggest danger is after the draw?
Speaker 13I think the three we know, Tempted, Jolly Star and Jimmy Star. So, yeah. There you go.
Speaker 2Pretty easy. Good on you, Zach. We appreciate you. Hey, Tom, you and David have been sensational. they should pay you an extra bit, I reckon, for all of the work that you've done to help promote this great race on Saturday. We wish you the best of luck, mate. Safe trip to Australia. Good luck tonight. And, yeah, bring on the Everest.
Speaker 13Well, David lives for it. And just in case he was going to slip into the barrier drawing incognito, he had to show everyone his socks. Yeah, 100%. Just to get the front page of the paper again.
Speaker 2I'm looking forward to getting my jacket, the Kang Rising jacket. In fact, I'm just checking to see if it's arrived yet. It's been sent. Oh, beautiful. I'm ready to go. Hopefully it's there. Hey, brother. Thanks, mate. Go and get them this weekend. There's Zach Pert and the champ. We'll welcome in Benny Caluzzi. Hello to you, Ben.
Speaker 14Hello, mate. What did you make of that? No, it's good, isn't it? It's an interesting chat. What I will say is there's plenty of bookmakers out there saying, oh, we'll give the punters $2, we'll give the punters $2. What do you reckon Bet365 will give us? I don't think we'll get anywhere near that.
Speaker 2I think maybe $1.60. You know, Braden's all that. Like, I've met Braden. I think I'm going to meet him this weekend. Surely he's our mega boost towards carding rising. Surely he gives us $2.
Speaker 14Well, hopefully. We'll see by Friday. But what I will say.
Speaker 2Well, can you get onto that now to see if that's a possibility?
Speaker 14Yeah, I can. Yeah. I can. I can ask. But it's a heavy eight right now, and he's still $1.40.
Speaker 2So. Yeah. Miles Fitzgerald joins us now. Miles, hello to you, mate.
Speaker 15Hello, G. Hello, Benny. There is zero chance of you getting $2 for some mega boosts.
Speaker 2Well, we could.
Speaker 15Why not? Zero chance. Come on, Miles. Mate. You're part of the Giddy
Speaker 2Up family now on a Saturday morning.
Speaker 15I would dead set love it, but there is no chance of that happening. Ben says he'll try, and he will, but I guarantee you, the boys will say no.
Speaker 2Well, I might try. I might ring Braden to see how. Like, he's always talking up a big game, and now he's the wham-bam trader, and we'll see how good he is then. They've got us the last few weeks. They can afford it. What did you make of that chat with Zach? What did you learn, Milo?
Speaker 15Well, I learned that you're getting a jacket, and we're not. No, no. There's a few jackets for us. There's a few jackets we'll be getting.
Speaker 2We'll be giving him away a couple of jackets.
Speaker 15Yeah. Look, when Zach says, when you asked him about Tempted, and you said, oh, will you be keeping an eye on her? And he said, no, I won't be. That's all I needed to hear. Yeah. He's only concerned about getting the horse to relax, and then putting them away. Like David said, you query over the horse over a bottomless, but you've still got to understand it's the best horse in the race. So, you know, wet tracks are wet tracks. I'm not a wet track punter, but look, he's the one to beat, clearly.
Speaker 2He'll be a wet track punter if I get you $2.
Speaker 15Yeah, I probably would be then, I'd imagine, Garrett.
Speaker 2Let's have a look at this Caulfield meeting. Can't wait for it. There's a lot of my mates heading out there on this Wednesday. They're going to have a good day. A couple of Asai's, no, Carlton Drafts for $8.50, and away they go. Are they employed, Jay? Hey? Are they employed? What do you mean? Yeah, they are employed. They're just going to have a Wednesday afternoon off, and they should if they're a racing fan. The debutante stakes over the 1,000-meter Sonos. You've got to feel for Troy Caulston's. This is a horse that he's been saving, trialed nicely, and he's right. If she won today, this daughter of Frankel, he probably sells it at the ready-to-run sale for a million, around that anyway. He'll probably still get $300 for her, but she's got a temperature this morning. He has to scratch her. It can be a cruel game. I think that they thought she'd run a mighty race. So what's the market doing now? Calvin McEvoy told me this morning that we should have something on Royal Press.
Speaker 14Well, plenty of punters have. It's been $2.50 into $2.20, obviously some minor deductions. Soldi's been a real good firmer, $4.20 in from $5.50. Marle Fushy is $4.60. It's on the drift despite having a bit of race form, and Fabian is $8.50.
Speaker 15Milo. Gareth, this is a day I think we can have a bet. I'm going to have a bet here. In the first, I've backed Soldi and I've saved Royal Press. I think that's the form that we need to take out of that trial, the Caulfield trial, as opposed to some of these others. I do have a bit of respect for Calvin's other runner. Milo Fulushi is not the worst either, and sort of drawn low in a smaller field here as well. I'm 6-2, 5-1 with a bet Soldi and a saver and all the profit on Royal Press, but it's not sort of a massive go here in the first, especially for these two-year-olds. All right, then.
Speaker 2We move on to race number two. And I'm looking forward to this race. Scratch the one, boys bounce safe for Saturday. Kototo, the three, refused to curtsy the 11. Sam Friedman said it this morning. Watch themountingoutonracing.com. If Amy Yagi gives you the tick of approval, then get on. Basically, Benny Cluzy.
Speaker 14That's a very good push. What I can tell you is that True Rebel didn't open favorite with us, but he's been smashed into $3.20 from Written Empire, $4.00. Rock solid hierarchy, $4.20. It's slightly. Pretty easy this morning. And Cruden's Tycoon, $6.50. Charlotte's horse is $9.00.
Speaker 15Miles. Hierarchy, pretty straightforward here. I think we can have a bet nice and early. Amy Yagi does a great job. And look, for those that can tune in and love the mounting outside of things, but I'll be backing this horse regardless. So hierarchy for me, dangers are clearly True Rebel. I think Written Empire has its claims. And you can also include the eight cliff runner at a big price for Danny O'Brien. Two, six, seven, eight, but we're back in the two.
Speaker 2Two, six, seven, and eight. Race number three over the 1,400 metres. Get on your blackers, Henley Homes. If you're looking for a home, go to Henley Homes. This is the Henley Homes handicap over the 1,440 metres. Scratch the four, seven, 12, 14, and 15 here for this benchmark 70. And Lloyd Kennewill gave us a good push for Loud Charlie yesterday there, Benny.
Speaker 14Money's pretty strong with it as well. It's our $2.65. It's our favourite looking for three straight victories from Stealth of Night, $5. Porter should go forward, $5.50. And Escarp has been a bit of a drifter, $7.50 out to $9.
Speaker 15Milo? Yeah, this is a race I won't be touching, Gareth. There's a host of chances here. Loud Charlie on top, Zara inside draw. Maybe the fence, I just want to get a good look at the track by this point of the day to have a decent look as whether or not you want to be hard rail or just coming off that rail. So I'm three, five, one, and six, but certainly won't be having a bad day. Can vouch for the Henley home, sir.
Speaker 2Yes, three, five, one, and six. We move on to the fourth race over the 2,400 metres. The Tobin brothers celebrating life's handicap. Wood's too dry for him. He is out the six. What's the market doing here?
Speaker 14Market's keen to be with Leon Cree yet again, $2.50. The big firmer in this market has been Autumn Heat, though. Went up $8.50 on Tuesday. It's now $5.50. Savvy Santa is $6.00. And Federer is $7.50 and slightly easy today.
Speaker 15Milo? Yeah, really, really opening the account here, G. I've had a good each way bet at the open on Beachpad, the three Beachpad for Declan Bates and Shane Jackson. We mentioned this in the midweek masterclass yesterday. And then I've also backed Leon Cra to win the same amount and sort of $2.50 on offer there, $2.40 other places at the moment for Leon Cra. So a really good solid bet here on those two. My number's five, three, one, and 10. Five, three, one, and 10. But I've had a crack here to open the account. Five at 2,400 metres.
Speaker 2So Leon Cra there for Miles, for Mick Price, Michael Kent Jr. and Blake Sheehan. It's 31 minutes past 10. That's the first look at the first half of the card at Caulfield. We'll come back and have a look at the Quaddie Leagues next. Benny Caluzzi, Miles Fitzner with you. We are previewing Kunji Day there at Caulfield on this Wednesday afternoon. We're up to race number five, which will kick off the Quaddie over the 1,400 metres. Benchmark 84. Scratch for three, 10, 13, and 15 here. Bucklew, what price are we getting for him today, Benny Caluzzi?
Speaker 14Well, currently we're getting $3, but he has just been replaced as favourite because there's been a stack of money for Jet Smash to the emphatic last start winner. $3.80 into $2.90. Bucklew is $3. That means everything else is on the drift. Fundamental Nature up $4.60 out to $6. And fear not, $7 out to $10. They only want two here.
Speaker 15Milo. Fascinating race this, Gareth. I've used that 84 at Caulfield as the lead up. That's what Presser, Fear Not, and Heel Rip came out of. Presser and Heel Rip absolutely flew home. Their last 600s were super impressive. Fear Not draws a little bit wider in nine. So the map here doesn't really favour a horse like Bucklew. So this is a horse that it's drawn for. I've got Space Rider, Chasey Dreams, Fear Not, Villasaurus all coming across and making it pretty difficult for it. Heel Rip and Presser should be rails in run if not one off. Jet Smash. Gets to the lead. So Heel Rip and Presser represent the bigger value here out of all the runners. I mentioned this yesterday. They should be both well into the double figures with Bet365 at the moment. We're still getting $13 as we can see and $21. So I think those two horses map the best. I've ended up here at 6, 14, 7, and 2. But I did include the 5 in the leg of the quaddie, which I'll read out at the end in Fear Not because that's a race I'm using. But I think Bucklew gets too far back. It'll continue to drift. And especially once a really rain-affected surface. And I think this track might be a bit hard for it.
Speaker 2So Milo taking on the favourite, or maybe a couple of the favourites there in that fifth race at Caulfield there to kick off the quaddie. We move on to race 6 over the 2,000 metres. The Emergencies come out here. The 16, 15, or the 14, 15, and 16 here, Ben.
Speaker 14Yeah, interested to see if Milo's taking this one on because it's been the best backrunner of the entire day. Yeah, our son. $2.30 into $1.95 now from Empress Zoo. To be fair, also brings good winning form. $6.50, but a bit of a drifter. Extra rush. $8, and politely done, also $8.
Speaker 15Yeah, I am taking it on. I mentioned yesterday I want to take on a horse that's going from 66 level at Ballarat and didn't really sort of run the legs off the clock there either on a good four at Ballarat over the mile against a horse like Emperor Zoo who's coming out of town winning form over a benchmark 74. I'm with Emperor Zoo. I think it's one of the bets of the day. We're getting $6.50 and $2.10. This is like an unbelievable price for a horse that I think can roll across, dictate to where Yasun sits. If it has to cross Yasun, he'll make it work early, Jabes. The map is the fascinating part. If Jabes rides his horse well, Yasun will end up leaders back and Emperor Zoo will end up outside leader. Extra rush leads it up. I honestly can't believe the go for this horse, so happy to take it on. Emperor Zoo, best bet, $1.6, $13 and $3, the numbers here. But yeah, I think politely done is probably a bigger danger than Yasun.
Speaker 2$1.6, $13. Three, Emperor Zoo. Miles Keane on the Kiramar Informed Galloper there in race number six. Race seven is the Kunji Handicap over the 2,000 metres. This is the feature of the day. Group three level, scratchings are clear.
Speaker 14We put up $4.40 for the favourite, Dark Bonnie, on Monday. It's been popular all week, but especially on Monday, got hammered $3.60 now from ZerYab, $5.50. It's one of your map horses. Pounding comes here, the softer option, $7, bit of a drifter. And Air Assault, also part of that speed battle, is $8.
Speaker 15Well, bang on, Benny. It maps everything, and the horses that map the best and are running the best at the moment are the Kiramar horses. So ZerYab and Smoking Romans are the two for mine. ZerYab on top. This horse comes out of that 84 at Mornington over the 2,000, where it probably gets a similar sort of set-up. I think this horse can sort of roll and dictate. Again, with Jabes, Ethan Brown and Smoking Romans, I mean, he'd ride a rocking horse to win at the moment, Ethan Brown. He's airborne. We're getting a massive price for it in this market as well. I think it's $19.04. I mean, that's just ridiculous out of a stable at the moment that's airborne. And the horse is still putting up reasonable numbers. I'm happy to go 8, 3, 1, and 6. I'll give Pounding some hope and Dark Benny some hope. I think you've probably got to include even Statuario, maybe running on if they go a little bit too hard, but that'll depend on what happens with Sunset Park and Ambassadorial. But I think they can control them from the front here, the Kiramar horses, and get it done.
Speaker 2And Race 8 over the 1,100, scratch the 4 and the 15 for this benchmark, 78, Ben.
Speaker 14It's the Taswegians at the top. Swift Force, $3.20. Craig Newart's only ride for the day from Trey Magnick Feek. Looking to bounce back, $5. King Tut, $8.50. Just rock steady at that mark. And Lorbra is $10.
Speaker 2Had a chat to Craig Newart yesterday. Miles at Trackwork, he said that he went and trialed her and galloped her before that first race at Launceston there the other night. She's flying. She just needs to do. She needs to do things right. If she does that, she's a well above average filly. So looking forward to seeing what she can do today in this last race. The pride of Tessie these days, Swift Force.
Speaker 15Yeah, I agree with Froggy. How much he gets touched up here getting forward is the answer to the race. And in Froggy, we trust. I think it's one of the better bets of the day, Race 8, number 8, Swift Force. I do have some respect for Rosa Aderea after its run, its last run. I know that it comes up fresh here, but that's stable also going well, essentially fresh, but it sort of went career peak at the end of last preparation. So looking to improve. And the 13 Romantic Miss, where it gets to in the map, probably might be able to sit just behind Lita and maybe get run favours. On 8, 7, 2 and 13. 8, 7, 2 and 13. But I dare say you can nearly take the 8-1 out. And if you were lied by that leg of the quaddie and knew you had a payout, you could probably back a few around and save and or lay out the quaddie.
Speaker 2Your best, Milo?
Speaker 15Best of the day. Race 6, number 1, Emperor Zoo. Unbelievable price. Especially, you're getting better for that horse to place than you are for Yasun to win, which makes no sense. So 6-1, Emperor Zoo. I'm actually going to roll with the next best. I've had two bets in two races. Race 7, I've backed the 8-3 in the Coogee, Zirab and Smoke and Romans. And race 3, I've backed Hill Rip and Presser, both each way. This is probably my biggest betting day of the spring so far here at Caulfield. So hopefully things unfold the way I think they'll unfold. But I'll probably even have a bet race 8, number 8, Swift Force, if we've got plenty in the kitty and the map's playing out to how I expect it to today.
Speaker 2What about the quaddie?
Speaker 15What we're going to do is I'll give you the full numbers, but you can also take one of these with just Emperor Zoo and Swift Force one out. So the first leg, 2, 5, 6, 7 and 14. Second leg, 1 and 6. That's just Emperor Zoo and politely done, leaving out Yasun. Leg 3, 1, 2, 3, 6, 7 and 8. 1, 2, 3, 6, 7 and 8. And we come home. With 2, 7, 8 and 13. That's $240. I'd go small percentage, but really, you can probably take one with Emperor Zoo and Swift Force one out.
Speaker 2What was your first leg numbers again?
Speaker 152, 5, 6, 7 and 14.
Speaker 22, 5, 6, 7 and 14. And then the second leg, 1 and 6. Third leg, 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8. And then you come home with 2, 7, 8 and 13. Correct. Go and get them, Milo. Thanks for that, mate.
Speaker 15Hey, appreciate your time. Don't forget race 2, number 8 at Ascot.
Speaker 2Yeah, race 2, number 8 at Ascot.
Speaker 15Luna will do.
Speaker 2Yes. I'll jot that one down as well. Thank you, Milo.
Speaker 15On you, Benny.
Speaker 2There's Milo's there. Milo's fits now. Extra Galactic is going to go to the McEwen. Looks like we'll take on Jigsaw. James McDonald, Trent Mason out of reporting. We'll be riding her on Cox Plate Day.
Speaker 14Jigsaw, can he go down the straight? That's the big question. It might be her opportunity to get him.
Speaker 2Yeah. Time for a break. On the other side of it, we'll preview the Rose Hill meeting. We'll begin with Mick Gannon. The Caulfield Cup fields are out here, Benny Caluzzi. We know the Caulfield Cup and the Thousand Guineas. What other races are we looking forward to here?
Speaker 14I'm looking forward to.
Speaker 2The Blue Sapphire.
Speaker 14The Blue Sapphire, yeah. It's going to be a good race.
Speaker 2Tales of Time, Barrier 1, Doubt Time, 11. Jabadar, Barrier 12, Organised Crime, Barrier 3, Barracks, Barrier 5. Overexcited, 9. Pocketful of Cash, Barrier number 8.
Speaker 14The Caulfield Sprints. Cavalry Girls drawn really good in Barrier 5. Gallant Sun, Just to Her, Inside in 4. Peloton, 6. Saluted's got plenty of speed out in 8.
Speaker 2And then the Harry White Private Eye, Barrier 2. War Machine. War Machine, 4. Willard, 0, 6. Here to Shock, 7. Zoo Sensation, 5L. Rocco, 1. Cartoon Graveyard, 3. And Amenable, Barrier 9. So the fields are out for Caulfield Cup Day. Let's welcome in Mickey Gannon. Hello to you, Mickey. Morning to you, G and Benny. What do you make of the Barrier draw for the Everest, the big winners and the big losers?
Speaker 16Not sure there's too many losers, to be honest, G. A lot's been spoken about. Tempted being a loser. You know, she drew Barrier 1 last time. And was in a pretty good spot there. Sure, there's some speed. More speed influences drawn low. That could suit her. I expect them to get to sort of the middle of the track anyway. So I don't think it's too big of a negative. I think even missing Kazaki was spot on. I think in and amongst runners wouldn't be great for her. So not terrible. Kaiying Rising, a bit of work to do there. Cabalas, Blue Dwarf, Savvy Halley drawn thereabouts. So I don't think it was good to hear him suggest that they probably wouldn't look to lead and sit outside leader. So that sort of gives us a bit of formation on the speed map. So Giga Kick, I think it's perfect. I've noticed you said this morning and a few others said, Dino as well, that that's negative. That's where else we want him. The only outside ripping home, right? So he can suck up behind them and away we go. Headwall, Jimmy Starr is probably the one that's probably drawn to advantage on last year with those speed influences right there. So he'll be well suited.
Speaker 2All right, let's rip through this program at Rose Hill. Mickey Gannon, we're on a soft seven. Soft seven. Railout four. Will it stay? They must have had that much. It's raining there at Rose Hill if it's a soft seven. So that's the conditions we've got today. The first race over the 1,200 metres for the three-year-old. Scratch the two, six and nine here, Benny Caluzzi.
Speaker 14Afari's been really well backed here, looking to break this long string of seconds. $1.80 from rain delay. Funny name, that. $4. Yotai is $10. It's been a huge drifter. And Nevada Falls has been 21 into 11 since Monday.
Speaker 16You have 28 mils of rain at Rose Hill. So you go for a good quarter. Soft seven. Rail's at four metres. Expect just off the fence and leading to be no advantage, but top six in run two is still be some advantage. So it'll be a good test for Afari here, who's struggling to win races, but she gets her opportunity today. She's got the fitness edge against plenty of her rivals. Eight, five, 12 and seven. But D-Day, Afari G.
Speaker 2Yep. Eight, five, 12 and seven to kick off proceedings. 1,400 metres made and is the second race. Scratch the 10 and the 13 here, Benny Caluzzi.
Speaker 14Italian spirit. Is he our $3? $1.60 favourite here. Went up $4.40 on Monday. No deductions from Sapphire Legend. $5. Schnitzel's Girl, also $5. And along the same theme, Cotterletter Cut at $8.
Speaker 16Interesting speed map here. Imagine the Italian spirit rolls forward from that draw, Waterhouse and Bott and Cotterletter Cut. Nashville will hold the position. So it's up well for Schnitzel's Girl, who is third up here, 1,400 metres by Schnitzel. Imagine this thing out. It's not going to be a negative with her. And she went 11 to 1,400 metres. last start and went closed, so with that stripping fitter, and she can be competitive and i guess the question would be asked why is james not on her well she's got 54 kilos uh james will be on the two uh aruza i'm going to go with uh who tried really well by the order of sun not sure on debut rain affected track is going to be ideal but she can be very competitive but i think the 14 clearly on top 14 2 12
Speaker 2and 1 14 2 12 and 1 in race 2 we go to race number three over the 1100 meters a few scratchings here 1 2 4 9 10 11 and 13 come out here
Speaker 14ben yeah really intriguing race a lot of new season three-year-old fillies on debut one of them is our favorite born to fly $2.40 from testing my patients is $4.40 ballet delight is $5.50 and uh my docane is $5.50 but it's all about the favorite
Speaker 1614 6 5 and 12 i really like the trials testing the patients i think that um she'll land top four and run be very very hard to beat outside of that g anything could happen here won't be betting in the race but keen to see them all go around here in race
Speaker 2number three so 14 6 5 and 12 race number four over the 1100 meters scratch the one and the three here um for this benchmark 72 ben yep it's left
Speaker 14the gartha as our $4 favorite screen icon's been a really good firm $4.40 even touched shorter at one stage moscatel $4.60 and hellenic bell is just holding
Speaker 16its price at $5.50 12 11 ace two moscatel on top by schnitzel it's pretty good there on debut ram week 1100 meters beat senior song some decent horses in that race rolls forward probably sits outside later or leads depends on what j mac does hellenic bell 1100 meter start point and rails and run will be an advantage here and that's why i have the 11 in there for second 12 11 8 no real confidence in the race first
Speaker 2leg of the quaddie race five there's eight races would you believe on a wednesday afternoon in sydney um scratchings are clear as well what is going on there's a field of 13 38 meals of rain there's been limited scratchings yeah what a world we're living in what's the market doing here benny caluzzi the markets
Speaker 14with j mac and wallah no real shock there it's into three dollars golden century uh grafton street's been the drift day it's been the drift day it's been the drift day it's been the drift day it opened favorite he's now getting out to three dollars so equal favorites but it opened pretty short on monday and the coast is six dollars and sonic bender 11 into nine
Speaker 16yeah we're getting a really good pricey golden century so benchmark 78 retains j max comes out of high pressure races and i think we'll get a high pressure race here back in grant back in grade i should say home track so taking plenty of boxes and um i thought ken may bay was going quite well there last time as well so beaten by a horse was in good form now gets a really good setup here barry three i think you can win the race and i think three dollars is a very very fair price my number is two three one and eight that's a little lead towards those getting soft runs back towards inside but i think golden century wins race number
Speaker 2five g so two three one and eight in race five race six is a beauty there's a couple of really interesting gallopers here scratch the four and the seven for this benchmark 88 few serious goes
Speaker 14as well punting is our three dollar favorite but this is the go perisher i went up eight dollars on monday five dollars fifty this morning now three dollars fifty so it's the strongly backed runner knobbler is four dollars forty and mr chaplin six dollars i got a knock at the door
Speaker 2the other day from the postman and i thought geez what's he delivering and he knocked on and said gareth you better go on perisher the mailman is strong here they're coming from everywhere to get to tell you you should be backing him
Speaker 1414 cents of deductions but this has still been 11 firmer which is huge mickey gannon that's
Speaker 16interesting isn't it james wrote in a trial and he was 55 dollars and he's got a lot of money and he's got a lot of money and he's got a lot of money and kilos isn't on here um interesting heavy track run in where's the list and that'd be over in ireland yes uk somewhere uh was clearly the worst run of his career so interesting to see how he goes good luck to the the connections uh i have five six eight and nine in that order i think knobbler i'm gonna go with noble noble um he's a horse on the art trial exceptional last trial was absolutely flying ready to fire here first up uh don't have any concern over a soft seven i think he can get the job done puttons has beaten up horse out in front if they let adam farah get away with uh racing murder he can give an enormous sight perisher um there is respect there for that horse of course and bestella absolutely no doubt that this horse can fire on a rain affected day race
Speaker 2number seven benchmark 78 scratch the one two three and seven here benny caluzzi metalli cut
Speaker 14two dollars down the line and he's got a lot of money and he's got a lot of money and he's got a lot of money and he's got a lot of money and he's got a lot of money and he's got a lot of money ten and very popular as favorite but yet again second favorite has been the biggest firmer i'm adonis now four dollars twenty diddle dumpling is eight dollars and chili marks is eight dollars as
Speaker 16well yeah six five twelve nine i'm keen to back metallic cat she went to completely level second up last time rain affected surface and she gets that same set up here again and she was pretty well and she was pretty good and she was pretty good and she was pretty good and i think she's been doing really well and i think she's been doing really well i think she's been doing really well but i think she gets every possible chance to win the race if there's a horse to beat her it has to be jasmine rouge um james sticks for an okay performance nothing to write home about but it's a wide draw and gets a good draw this time around but about them both so metallic how best of the day i think it wins i'm gonna save jasmine rouge i'm gonna play the exact as well hopefully we can get a result and you probably even back jasmine rouge to play spend your price we're getting about the five you're probably even back jasmine rouge to play spend your price we're getting about the five
Speaker 14down the page it is ten dollars and two dollars sixty five in place yeah
Speaker 16so that'll be how i'm playing it back to six to win back to five to place and play exact as well i'm pretty confident six five twelve nine i think twelve i'm a donna's good horse by i am invincible i'm not sold on the soft seven there and the nine scolato fourth um race
Speaker 2number eight scratch the one six eleven and
Speaker 14fourteen here benny very open race four dollars a field pulsator looking for three straight is our four dollar favorite from jasmine rouge and jasmine rouge and jasmine rouge and jasmine rouge and jasmine rouge and jasmine rouge duke of iraqis five dollars bit of a firm there chappy five dollars fifty went up elevens on monday but fourteen cents come out and azarax is 750
Speaker 16big watch chappy i thought it was good through line like post um uh post the line there in the trial so big watch there j mac on i'm just gonna watch the race not betting the 15 pulsator goes forward gives an enormous sight as well by us since we're all sticking out of the ground shouldn't be an issue 13 15 16 and then three oh shamus i know this is well short of his best but he's an enormous price if they just happen to overdo it here he can definitely run into the placings and yeah 34 you've got to include him in your best
Speaker 2there in sydney on this wednesday mickey gannon
Speaker 16mates i'm gonna go with uh race five number two golden century i think it's just all sort of um coming up millhouse for him so race five number two race seven number six metallic cat the best as well and you've got a jasmine rouge in your in your exotics there as well the six and the five what do you make all right let's kick off race five and we're gonna have the two one outs we've got to race six the second leg we'll have the five the six uh the eight and the nine so a little bit wider there five six eight nine the third leg we'll just have the five and the six jasmine rouge metallic cat and we'll come home in the last 13 15 16 3
Speaker 2beautiful so two one out five six eight nine second leg five six third leg and then 13 15 16 and three in the final leg good on you mickey gannon

Speaker 2back to giddy up it's a busy final hour coming your way and it's great to have the company of our friends now in western australia joining us on sen turf for the final hour they join our audience on rsn sen track and also of course on racing.com you can check out racing queen Queensland.com.au for where Queensland is racing today. Chris Nelson joins us for his best at Eagle Farm.
Speaker 17G'day, Chris-o. How are you going?
Speaker 2Good, thank you, mate. Take it away with your best bets.
Speaker 17All right. Each way, race two, number six, and that is Seatic Flash. First run for the stable was an absolute cracker at the Sunshine Coast. 1,400 metres should suit, so each way you'll get near enough to double figures. Race five, horse number two, Shervington. You'd think he'd be too quick for these over 1,000 metres, wouldn't you? Yes. He's drawn gate one. He does show speed. He's got a good first up record, and he's trawled up nicely. So race five, number two, Shervo. And the best bet of the day, we have to take short odds, but race six, number five, Monotone. Look, very impressive winning first local start at the Sunshine Coast. Bolting in by over six lengths can bring that form to town and win again. Race six, number five.
Speaker 2So race two, number six, race five, number two, and race six, number five, your best at Eagle Farm.
Speaker 17They are the three, and only six races today, so a little boutique meeting at Eagle Farm.
Speaker 2You enjoy yourself, Chris, so thanks for that. Thanks, Gareth. Cheers. Wake up with New Zealand racing. Kick your day off with a Kiwi bet. What's gambling really costing you? For free and confidential support, visit gamblinghelponline.org.au. Mark Clayton joins us. Clayton, hello to you. Where do we start with your specials today in New Zealand?
Speaker 18We're going to go late for the start, Gareth. Good morning to you and the Bag of Tips listeners. Race eight, I've got a special here. Drawn out a bit, but I think number 10, our Solana, going on her last start, fresh up run at Ellerslie. She's set three. Rewired the trip, and she never laid down. She was in the fight right to the end behind in day one. She's not a bad sort of horse. I think our Solana's the best of the day.
Speaker 2Beautiful, so that's race eight. Number 10, what else have you got for us?
Speaker 18Earlier on from the same Stephen Marsh stable, and a nice little filly, Royal Asset. I've been watching her, her first up run at Talpo behind a really smart type in Riptide. It was really good. She went into third that day, went to a high-rated race at Tarapa, and she was making good ground really late. So I really like the way she savages the line, Royal Asset. I know she's a bit short, but I think it might be a good way to get in nice and early.
Speaker 2That's Royal Asset, race three, number 10. Anything else, mate, before we let you go?
Speaker 18Look, I got an early morning phone call this morning. One of the coat pullers was out in force, and he's up bright and early. He's ready for this one coming up in the next at Tauranga. You've got four minutes, and he liked the 10, Chama Royale. Got a big rep on it, so getting a bit of a push. It's a good price.
Speaker 2Beautiful. $21. You'll be the king. You'll be the king clutter if this wins. Chama Royale. I'll pay for it, mate.
Speaker 18I'll give it.
Speaker 2We better let you go so you can back it, because we need to back it as well. So thanks for that, Clodo. We'll be watching with interest.
Speaker 18Good on you, Gareth. Thank you. Thanks, mate.
Speaker 2Thanks to Racing SA. Lincoln Moore sent through his tips at Balaclava. Race three, number 12, Pocket Pyro. Synthonize race four, number one, and race seven, number three, Extra Fling. So three, 12. Four, one, seven, three for Lincoln Moore at Balaclava. Scotty Embry at Ascot today. His best bet comes in race five, horse eight, Mr. Mellon, and race three, number 11, Queen Diva. So five, eight, three, 11. And Darren Carroll at Kilmore likes race six, number nine, Smarty Bean. Race seven, number eight, My Mate A. So six, nine, seven, eight at Kilmore for Darren Carroll. Harness Racing New South Wales, the home of the Carnival of Cups, where Australian music rules. He meets quality harness racing action. Amanda Rand. She likes race one, number 11, Lexi, and race four, number two, Nathan Street. So race one, number 11, race four, number two. This is Giddy Up on a Wednesday morning. That was Bag of Tips. Thanks to the Ultima Hotel, Oz Equipment Rentals, and Bet365. On the other side of it, looking forward to catching up with Ben Willis, the man who is basically the face of my racehorse. And aren't they having a run at the moment? He'll be joining me in the studio straight after this. Welcome back to Giddy Up at six minutes past 11. My racehorse, they've been in the news of late. They're beating K, rising in trials. They could be winning in Everest on Saturday. The more rain, the better, they tell me, for Ninja. And Ben Willis from my racehorse, of course, the managing director, joins me here. Ben, welcome back to Giddy Up.
Speaker 19Gareth, thanks for having me. It's good to be here. Talk us through that trial for us. Well, look, I think what I've been saying to everyone is Ninja came out and won the missile, did a really good job, and then he ran in the shorts and he was a little bit flatter, optimally, like plenty of excuses when you think about the race shape and nothing really made ground out wide. What that trial was really good for was just showing us that he still wants to be out there running and gave all of our owners a boost. And then we got another boost last night at the Barrier Draw with drawing Barrier 3 and the rain coming down. It was absolutely heaving out there.
Speaker 2Now, he's had success and he's been a pretty good horse in the early part of his career at Ninja. He's one of your headline acts. But that trial victory over Carling Rising was probably his biggest victory of all, really, from a marketing perspective for my racehorse. You were everywhere, basically. The nightly news, we talked about you, front page, back page of the big papers in this country.
Speaker 19There was a lot of noise about the trial, wasn't there? Yeah. It was good. It was good. I did read a couple of things where some people were speculating that maybe we asked Michael to try and get Ninja to try and beat Carling so we could get some publicity out of it. But 100%, even if I did, Michael would just laugh at me and tell me to go where I'm meant to go.
Speaker 2100%. And did you make the, was it the photos there of you beating Carling Rising? Because I would have bought one if I owned, and I was talking to this to a few of my colleagues here the other day, if I beat Carling Rising, the world's best racehorse, even if it's at the trials, I'd love to have that in my, in my pool room at home.
Speaker 19We should, um, I think we might start making trial win frames anytime one of our horses win a trial. Well, it's different.
Speaker 2It's a, you don't beat Carling Rising every, every day, even if it is a trial.
Speaker 19I think, I think it's been blown out. A proportion? A proportion, a little bit that, um, like we, we just wanted to give our owners something, this is a really exciting journey for our owners, the road to the Everest, so we just wanted to give them an opportunity to have it as a keepsake. Like you could have bought the photos direct off the photographer for 500. So we thought, well, why don't we frame them up and sell it to them for a hundred. And you know what?
Speaker 2I've got a lot of friends in my racehorse and it's all about the journey. Exactly. So we're not in there to make money. It's just to get the updates from Michael Friedman or the Kira Mars or all your trainers that you use. Um, and then. To enjoy that, that experience. And if you've got a horse, you've got a horse, we'll get Gary Lyon into, um, my racehorse, um, he was just knocking on the window. That's why I was distracted. But, um, like that's part of the journey. And what about this? How many owners have you got in Ninja? 17, 0, 1, so 1,701.
Speaker 19Yeah, that is, um, and they all will be there. The majority of them, I would imagine on Saturday. Yeah. There's obviously a few that can't just due to where they live and it's, it's difficult. Um, tickets were hard to come by, but we've got an event the night before for the day before where there's going to be about four to 500 people there and Michael will be there. Tommy. Um, so it'll be a really good Ninja Prey event. I imagine that 500 are heading to the track the next day. So yeah, it'd be a good spectacle. Are you starting to dream? Dream about winning. Look, if it's a heavy track, Ninja from 12 to 1400 meters, he's form. It's pretty impeccable. Um. Um, reads really well. So I think, I think when he gets out to the six furlongs on Saturday, not necessarily starting to dream, but I think he's capable of being a top four chance.
Speaker 2Yeah. Yeah. And what is it like, um, obviously my race horses had a wonderful time of, especially the last couple of years, but what does it do for your organization to get a horse into an Everest? Yeah.
Speaker 19Well, I think what we've been saying is when you first launch the business, you circle a few races that you want to get your horses in. And the Everest is obviously one of those big races that it's important to, if you're offering elite racing and an affordable price, then having a horse run in the Everest is the perfect demonstration of that. Right. So these owners were able to buy in for about $150 now racing for 20 million prize money. So that all of that world, it's really important. Um, and you know, on the day, our undercards really strong, we've got platinum pearl down here in the thousand Guinness, which is kind of getting missed a little bit. Um, as well as two runners in the group, three angst on Everest day, and then another two in the silver Eagle being apocalyptic and decorum, who's a horse we've just bought and people can now own. So I think, um, I think overall ninjas, the headline, but it's a really strong card that hopefully helps demonstrate what sort of bloodstock we like to buy and what race days we like to set them for.
Speaker 2But like my race horse, when it came to, um, everyone started to know who my race horse was when authentic one, that 20, 2020, 2020 Kentucky. Darby and it gave mums and dads and everyone a chance to mix it with billionaire owners on probably nearly the biggest stage in world racing that Kentucky Derby, like, um, it is the race that everybody wants to win in America. And then you've been able to do that here in Australia and you've had success, but I think the biggest, I'm not saying this because you're here, but you have been picking the right horses and that's not easy going to the sales, identifying these horses, and now you're getting the rewards by competing in guineases and Everest.
Speaker 19Yeah, definitely. Damon Gabbard, he leads up our Bloodstock team.
Speaker 2He's done well, Damon.
Speaker 19He has. There's a pretty savvy team behind it. Emma Friedman does a lot with us as well, and the trainers and their Bloodstock teams. But everything we look for behind the scenes and also at the sales, it is kind of nicely coming together. You're right. Because they are getting good results on the track.
Speaker 2Because you can't have, like, this is a game judged on winners. And if you're not getting there, yeah, that's reality. It doesn't matter if you're in your business or you're a trainer or you're a jockey. Form expert. Yeah, form expert, giddy-up shows. If you're not providing people with winners, it's the name of the game.
Speaker 19Correct. Yeah. Definitely.
Speaker 2Yeah. So how many horses will you offer for people out there? So you go to the sales. How many are you trying to – and then you're buying tried horses now, like Decorum. So what is the process there? If I'm wanting to get into one of these horses now,
Speaker 19what's the best way to go about it? it yes so right now jump onto myracehorse.com decorum is running in the silver eagle he just drew barrier two actually yeah we'll improve on a wet ground and um so you can buy him for i think it's about 315 dollars yeah um then you got a runner on saturday so that's that's how you do it so you can get in now yeah you can get in right we've only got about done about 70 percent of him so we launched him at the start of the week he's selling fast um but you can get in right now and then yeah you've got a runner saturday but it's like online shopping you go to the website pick your horse add shares to your cart hit buy and you
Speaker 2can scan now if you're watching us on racing.com um and win a free share and a cult by the same messiah as ninja
Speaker 19yeah so this is a horse called slash he's by farnan out of um nakatan who actually produced uh political debate who was the jj yeah the cool more horse um yes yeah running cool more colors yes yeah um so we've bought the half to him at the easter sale and he's only 58 but we're running a competition with sen at the moment where until friday 11 59 p.m you go free to enter 60 takes about 60 seconds win one of 10 shares in slash okay yeah and so you
Speaker 2can scan right now if you're watching racing.com or if you're listening to on the radio just go to the website that's it yeah yeah um and then you've got runners all over the country as you pointed out what are you looking forward to most outside of ninja this saturday yeah which runner yeah which one apocalyptics in the silver eagle yeah she is and
Speaker 19i'm like it's been over a year since she was able to win so hoping she can get get back into form we've got decorum in the same race i think i'm leashing in the group three angst is our best chance okay yeah she comes out of um a race win last last prep yeah last race and she's 1600 will only improve on the wet track drawn a bit wide which doesn't seem to be a problem but she's got a lot of potential she's got a lot of potential but i think she's our best winning chance i think
Speaker 2someone was telling me at the pub there the other day he goes gareth how are you like i got a few racehorses in i got a horse with mr zhang like he loves me mr zhang i said oh that's it's pretty good to get a horse in with one of the most powerful owners going around in world racing yeah and he goes yeah i've got one with my racehorse so yeah and that's the american eagle yeah so how about that there's blake bragging in the pub that he's got this horse with mr zhang and how they they well he does yeah he does yes yes so they come together and mr zhang um and he's not a bad cold
Speaker 19either no he's he's not unfortunately he we're going to go to the tap craig and he just sort of pulled up sore one morning so target him towards the magic millions guineas 1400 meters two million dollars i think it is we didn't get a lot of luck in that race last year but hopefully we can redeem how do you go managing all these owners it's my team yeah we've got a really good team um that manage the customer service handles quite a bit uh they're full full-time full-on but how many how
Speaker 2many work for you
Speaker 1910 yeah yeah yeah um and then we've got a really good tech platform that helps with the scale but the owners generally speaking are awesome yeah like they're they're so good to deal with they're so supportive of what we're doing and when they're asking questions it's because they're generally genuinely curious so they're not hard to deal with at all they're the
Speaker 2proper racing fan aren't they they are and they're getting experience that if you didn't come along they probably wouldn't be able to have this
Speaker 19experience yeah correct yeah that's it so if we can keep providing them a good experience that's the that's the thing that we try and do we can't control the race outcome but if we can run events get them the track do stable tours and and they're sort of paying for that entertainment experience yeah that's the most important part mr waitley jerry waitley's
Speaker 2old man um he loves it like in jerry and i remember talking to mr waitley about it and like absolutely he lives for it he's not there to make money but he's got melbourne he's had melbourne cup runners he's had group one runners and it's just something for him this gives him a purpose basically like a lot of the people out there that have these shares yeah
Speaker 19it does it gives him and you know it creates great memories you have a bit more things to talk about with your mates you get to the track you're still that you're still so invested in what the horse does because you're following their journey from like we've got we've got one horse at the moment prince kirk he's a full to king kirk who won the breeders played on david and um tragically passed and we bought him even before he was a weanling so we bought him as a in the paddock as a foal when he was still on his mum and he's now trialed twice and won both and about to get to the races and that two-year journey for our owners has been amazing yeah
Speaker 2yeah hey mate keep doing what you're doing um i think it's great for racing it's important for racing and i wish you the best of luck with everything um involving ninja i think it's good to have a my racehorse um and i was listening to emma and greg radley there last night and two of your owners were in the rain i
Speaker 19don't i don't know if that's true or a stitch up but it wouldn't surprise me if they were i think i think they deserve tickets if they haven't got them and they
Speaker 2deserve tickets in the mounting yard um so you can scan there on your tv screen win a free share in a colt by the same sire which is farnham of the everest runner ninja um of course he'll be racing for 20 million dollars on um saturday afternoon thanks for coming in ben gareth thanks for having me mate you're a good man ben willis the managing director of my racehorse it's the best from the west coming up next with darren mccoy join the conversation text
Speaker 1us on oh four double nine seven three six seven three six live across australia this is giddy up with gareth hall tune in to racing wa tv on seven plus your ultimate destination for everything racing in the west on sen track this is the best from the west welcome back
Speaker 2to giddy up gareth hall with you tune into racing wa tv on seven plus and racing.com it's your ultimate destination for everything racing in the west darren mccoy joins us g'day maca hi gareth
Speaker 20good morning to you that was a great interview too by the way wonderful if they're over here i'm not quite sure whether they are or not no we'll get them over there don't they don't they engender some excitement they
Speaker 2do don't they and it's not for everyone but i i think that um yeah i think that the people i talk to anyway that are involved they love it so there you go um fantastic it's
Speaker 20a great concept and a lot of people getting a lot of fun and enjoyment and we saw many out there at the opening of ascot last weekend also doing exactly the same it was a fantastic return the excitement's there and we've got a really busy couple of months coming up too from ascot right here in wa so we're i think set for some pretty exciting racing
Speaker 2hey that was a great day you could feel the atmosphere there through your microphone at ascot darren yeah you can
Speaker 20really tell the difference can't you from the move from belmont park where we're quite isolated away from the crowd and the crowd isn't anywhere near as big as what it is of course at ascot and they sit virtually under my feet in the broadcasting box the majority of the crowd on the members and it just seems to revamp the atmosphere a little bit reverberate up and of course it's got that theater-like feeling when when you go back to headquarters the better horses the better racing the quality of the racing improves and of course the atmosphere lifts with that and that's a good point that you made i listened back to one of the races on the weekend uh bassett hounds racing just the roar the um the great level of excitement and and the drive the crowd were giving um the finishes of those races and we saw some great racing some tight racing again on the weekend and it makes a big difference it really does convey the atmosphere of what ascot racing is all about
Speaker 2when i think about the caulfield cup cob i think about northerly back in 2002 when i yeah um when i think about wa racing and their connection with that caulfield
Speaker 20cup you know um it's quite funny you should mention northerly because this saturday being the 17th of october he was foaled down the road and he was down at oakland park the old oakland park in marybrook on the 17th of october 1996 so it'll be 30 years to the day this saturday that northerly arrived into the world the son of sir heat out of north bell at marybrook and of course six years after he was foaled down there went on to win carrying 58 kilos the the caulfield cup i think that was the highest weight since ming dynasty had won way back in the day back in the 1970s for bart so um yeah just one of his many many great group one wins and of course a week later he went for a leisurely gallop around moody valley and picked up his second Cox Plate. We knew that it was a certainty after winning the Caulfield Cup the way that he did. So it's 30 years this Saturday, the day of the Caulfield Cup, the race he won in 2002, that he was actually born. So there's a nice little bit of Caulfield Cup history connected with the great Fighting Tiger.
Speaker 2He was one of the horses that caught my imagination to get me involved in this game. I loved him northerly. He was just a champ and he looked beaten and he would come again. And those clashes that he had with Sunline, especially through the Fane and then to the Cox Plate, they were legendary. And he was the Fighting Tiger. And I guess there's a horse by the name of Cosmic Crusader, as Bob Peters has pointed out. We're not trying to compare him to northerly, but he gets his chance to win a Caulfield Cup with 56. And then if he can do that, he'll get his chance to back up a week later and win a winnable Cox Plate this year.
Speaker 20Yeah, he's got it all ahead of him, hasn't he? The Crusader at the moment. He's certainly no northerly, but he's a very, very good horse. And this is a race that Bob Peters would dearly, dearly love to win. Of course, I think much has been spoken about Bob's narrow defeat with Congressman back in 1988, when Rossi McDonald's Impacira got Congressman right on the line. In fact, I think, and I remember the day, because we were all cheering for Congressman as a West Aussie. All of the callers, I think there were about three race callers back in those days, three or four. And every single one of them, I think, went for Congressman in the photo. They had three developed prints. That was back in the day when they were printing photos, not pixelating them with computers like we see today. But everyone thought that Congressman had got the job done. But the photo showed otherwise an Impacira won the Caulfield Cup that year. Bob's had a few other runners along the way. I think he had Real Love, who ran in the race about 10 years ago. And Inspirational Girl was only beaten three and a half lengths when she ran behind Durston in 2022. So Bob's been there. He's gone very close to winning the Caulfield Cup. And he's got a super, super chance with the second favourite. I think he was still second favourite, about 550.
Speaker 2I had a look earlier. He's favourite now, is he? Yeah, last week that he's going to the Caulfield Cup.
Speaker 20Right, OK. Well, over here, it's currently on TabTouch. He's about a half a point behind Zaran at $5. So looking at the market, but they could fluctuate from corporate to corporate. So anyway, we're talking shillings and cents.
Speaker 2Yeah, that's been a good, that's been a good go then for Zaran overnight. So there you go.
Speaker 20It's firmed up anyway. Yeah. So look, you know, he comes into barrier 14. He'll go back and, you know, Willie will ride him as Willie does. He knows the horse like the back of his own hand. But if he's going to win a Caulfield Cup, this is the right year, I think, to be winning it. So whether he gets through that then and comes back to the 2000 metres at Flemington or the Cox Plate, we'll wait and see, first of all, after the weekend. But exciting times from a WA perspective with Bob's horse going around there, trying to win
Speaker 2him his first Caulfield Cup. It's going to be an exciting time. I love how he's going to a Caulfield Cup. It is a tricky draw, but Pikey hopefully can follow her back and we'll get to see him at his best, even if it's a good four, maybe a good three by the time we get to the Caulfield Cup there on Saturday afternoon. The nominations, the first lot of nominations have come through for the Pinnacles. But one of those that wasn't nominated was Pride of Jenny. And this is what Tony Ottobre had to say today when I had a chat to him and asked him about whether he'd like to go to WA or not with her. And of course,
Speaker 8there's always a race up at Western Australia.
Speaker 2Would you go there, Uncle Tony? Would you go to a northerly over 1800 metres to Western Australia?
Speaker 8You know something, if she's going well, I'd love to take her there because I'd love the Western Australian people.
Speaker 2So that's Tony Ottobre. So if she's going well and ready to go after, say, she runs into King Charles and then she'll run in an Empire Rose. And Kieran says, let's go, Tony. He wants to go for the northerly. So he wasn't in the first NOMS, but I think it's only 500 to join in with the second NOMS there, Darren.
Speaker 20Yeah, yeah. Look, they've got that option. It'd be a wonderful attraction if she could come across Pride of Jenny. She would certainly add a bit of quality to the carnival. The nominations, of course, came from all the big yards. You know, Wallamar, the Archibalds, there were NOMS, from Henry Dwyer, the Freedies, Pete Moody, Kath Colman, you name it. They're all there. Bjorn, the Caustons, Graham Begg, good to see him back nominating horse. Whether they get here remains to be seen. Mickey Price, the Hayes boys, Robbie Griffiths, who's a regular. They all threw in a stack of nominations for all of the races. We've got the Railway on the 21st of November, the Winterbottom on the 28th, and, of course, the Northerly, the last of the group ones, on the 5th of December, the million and a half dollar guy. Old Rush, that's on the 12th. So, yeah, big NOMS, good NOMS, and, you know, let's hope that some of them arrive here. Some of the big-name trainers bring the best of what they have to come to Perth, and they do arrive here.
Speaker 2I reckon there's possibilities, talking to different people over here, that you'll get Jigsaw, Ray McNeary, that's a big tick for the Winterbottom, and there's a strong possibility you might get Buckaroo and I don't know how much weight you get. So, some of the big names. So, if those names turn up there, Darren, it will be one of the most anticipated pinnacles that I can recall.
Speaker 20Yeah, absolutely. There's a lot of water to flow under the bridge, as we see every year. We get the NOMS. I think these are really good. These are a strong list of nominations that I've had a glance through last night. So, I think that gives us a bit of confidence, Gareth, going forward, and if they can fill up a plane that's coming across from the east, well, that'll be an added bonus for Perth racing as well. And, of course, we see some of the locals kicking off, once again, Western Empire back in the Eurythmic with Watch Me Rock. Of course, it's a different look now, isn't it? They're with the Grand Delana, currently under disqualification. I did speak with them yesterday, and they'll be submitting their. their stay of proceedings and appeal application through Damon Shield tomorrow. I think there was an expectation that they'd submitted that, but that's not the case. So, that'll be put through tomorrow. Jason Pateman's currently standing in as the caretaker trainer in the meantime, until they get their stay heard, and then we find out more about the appeal. But it's a bit of a different look with Western Empire, who's been trialling super. Jason Pateman, Jason Lyon, not a combination, you see, with that Group 1 star. But it's a good result for Jason Lyon, who's establishing himself here in WA. So, they'll be going around. Watch Me Rock, the stable, mate. A couple of the Group 1 horses there. The stars are really starting to emerge. Now, King of Light, he'll line up there. The winner of 6 of 7. So is Hot and High. She's the winner of 6 of 7. She'll go around in the Crawford Stakes on return. Drew Barry of 1. We're looking forward to seeing where she goes to from here. She'll be pressing on out towards the mile of the railway. And the other very good mare back in the Crawford is playing. That's sweet. So, some interesting noms there for the two feature races coming up on the weekend, of course. And notwithstanding, the horse we've all taken a bit of a shine to. In fact, he's developed a colt following. I see that Roger is going around. He's two for two. He's going around in that three-year-old.
Speaker 2That's because of you, Colt. Let's be honest. That call when you said he gave him a good Roger-ing.
Speaker 9He did. He did. He gave it to the mare. Yeah, he gave it to them. A good Roger-ing. In the 1400 play. I was watching it. He's a showy bugger. He's a showy looking thing.
Speaker 20He's got the white leg. He struts his stuff, Roger. And we like him. We like Roger a lot.
Speaker 2I was watching. I was on Racing.com and you're on Racing.com and I said, Roger-ing. I just thought only Dee McCauley could get away with that anyway. And it was at your best. Play on words. Play on words. No, it wasn't. And you know what? You calling Pride of Jenny would be nearly the highlight for me as well. Past Becca Gates.
Speaker 20I hopefully get the opportunity to call her if she gets over here. Pride of Jenny should be a massive attraction here for us. Mitch Pateman. I know who you're speaking about, Mitch.
Speaker 2He could train you to win the New York Marathon at the
Speaker 20moment. He's having the most extraordinary run and they're backing them too. The stable have got a following, a good punt stable. Yeah. And they're landing good results there too. It's fantastic. Young trainer on the way up. His partner's a terrific young lady, Holly Watson, and clearly a very good rider as well. Holly, as we saw through her apprenticeship, now her development as a junior rider, but he's running at 28% winters to runners average. And 46 place getters to runners at the moment too. So selective, but boy, aren't they just hitting the mark at the moment, the stable.
Speaker 2I've got to go, Mac. He's got the most popular horse, I reckon, in WA, the Wooden Basset, Basset Hound at the moment. That was exciting to see what he did. He had them up and about, didn't he? He did. On the weekend, it was fantastic. What about some winners today?
Speaker 20Winners today, a bit light on seven races today. I think we'll play a little all-up G if we can. I'll quickly run through these for you. Race one, number nine, Bourbon on the Rocks. It's around 265, firmed up a bit overnight. Race three, number 11, Queen Diva. She's at $2.35. She's attracted good backing. The very best, I think, is Mr. Mellon. Race five, number eight at 280. So if we played a multi and all up, $17.40, and I think all three can just about get the job done. So there you are. So we're going race one, race three, race five, numbers nine. Nine, 11, and eight.
Speaker 2Good on you, Cobb. I love those Fighting Tiger glasses that you've got on these days as well. They suit you.
Speaker 20They are. Thanks, mate. Yeah, these are the racing blinkers, G.
Speaker 2They're great. Darren McCauley, always great to catch up, mate. Thanks for that.
Speaker 20Good on you, mate.
Speaker 2Thanks indeed. There's Darren McCauley, the voice of WA Racing, the weekly chase coming up next with Jason Adams and Georgie Ferugia. We'll be right back. Time for the weekly chase with Jason Adams and Georgie Ferugia. Georgie's in the doghouse. He's just walked into the back to talk to Louis and Pauly Sebastiani, and they're screaming like they've won Tats Lotto. He's obviously tipped in the second with a high voltage there at the Meadows and left poor old Gareth out.
Speaker 21He lunges and wins!
Speaker 2Hello, Georgie Ferugia.
Speaker 21G'day, mate. I do want to disturb you while you're on air. Mate, you could have had something on for me.
Speaker 22And it was a maiden, so he's got some sort of mail. Yeah, 100%. Fair dinkum. Any chance you could text me?
Speaker 9I've got a few ad breaks that I could probably get on. Sorry, mate. Apologies. I thought your producer would pass it on. Can I push the blame onto Pauly? No wonder he wasn't concentrating, trying to get that grab that I wanted.
Speaker 2Oh, betting out the back. I don't know if they're allowed to do that. He's flat as a shite and hasn't caught his hat. Now, tell me this, Georgie. Georgie, the final ever meeting at Wentworth Park, the Million Dollar Chase, is the last race. Who wins? Hello to Jason Adams as well.
Speaker 21Hello, G. You two can run the show. That's all right. Pardon the pun. I think pound for pound, the safest beginner is the three, pound keeping. Yes. Sort of went to another level the next start. But without sitting on the fence, if this race was in Victoria, Canyon Mayhem would be favourite in it. And that's not true. That's not to say that Canyon Mayhem doesn't handle Wentworth Park. But the discrepancy early to the marker, it went 5.51 last week. Pound keeping went 5.36. So it just needs to clean up a little bit early. And we know it can do that, Jase, right? I mean, it can go low five seconds when it's in Melbourne. If it nails the start and holds its position, Gareth, it's got to be a huge chance. So we'll ask for Greyhound Racing.
Speaker 2Big stage always stands up.
Speaker 21Canyon Mayhem. Look, did it in Queensland from wide draws in good fields. Just pinged out, went five seconds flat at Q2, which is very fast. So any replica of that and it's
Speaker 22absolutely game on. I think he was beginning better during that period of time, where, as you said, that you want him to get away better than what he did last week. So as much as I don't read a whole lot into it, there is that box one hoodoo that hangs over his head at Wentworth Park. Off the chart faced it last week, he was beaten.
Speaker 21I'll have a theory. The box didn't beat off the chart. He beat himself. Like he just dwelt, Jase. And I think if you can begin cleanly off box one. Yeah, I'm not saying it did beat.
Speaker 22I'm just saying there's that theory out there about it.
Speaker 21You disagree, obviously, George. I don't agree with it, but it is out there. You just love to have box one, I reckon, in a race like this. The other one, Gareth, I can't believe it's $26 is the seven of Andy Lord's fearless bandit.
Speaker 2Well, if it was any good, Jason Thompson would have it, wouldn't he?
Speaker 21I tell you, it's got some good speed too. I don't know. I just think at those odds, it's worth a little bit of a play. Do you know what?
Speaker 2I've got this theory on these big nights in greyhound racing. About the, about the dogs hearing the lure. And some of the more consistent beginners missing it. And some, some of them just timing it better. We've seen it time and time again at the meadows. So essentially this is going to be unprecedented.
Speaker 22This will be the most amount of noise at a greyhound track for 25 years.
Speaker 2Yes. I reckon it'll play a part. You mean from the wider boxes? I reckon you throw out your box speed. I don't think these dogs will hear the lure. I reckon the roar of the crowd for the final ever meeting race. At the meadows, million dollar chase. 7,000 people there. Yeah. That green light goes on. They're not hearing that lure on Friday night.
Speaker 21It's going to play a factor.
Speaker 2I reckon it'll play a huge factor. No doubt. And I've got no doubt. And you asked a few of the trainers. It does play a part Melbourne Cup day, Melbourne Cup night. And especially Phoenix when you've got those lunatics in the sports bet tent. And like a few of the others that go down towards the start. And the roar. And Daniel Emmett goes green light on. No way those dogs are hearing it.
Speaker 21This will be times 10 though, Gareth. Because Wentworth Park, you're right there. I mean, and they're selling single seats. Like it's going to be. And you can imagine everyone going to push towards the fence. Yeah. Oh my goodness. You make a really good point. So do you have a bet in the race then, Gareth? Well, you take a punt that
Speaker 2you try and back
Speaker 21the best dog.
Speaker 2And hopefully it goes your way. It's a bit of a lucky dip because the start's going to be important. But. You just got to hope your dog times at best. Because they'll have to. It'll be a mindset habit thing. When they go into the boxes, they understand it's coming. And then someone's got to time it better than the rest.
Speaker 21Look, and we're obviously, we love the Vicks. And there's only one Victorian in the race. Jase, if he can get down to low 540 to the marker the first time, it's absolutely game on. He cannot be running 550s and expect to lead this. And you're going to be crashing in on you. And when you mentioned a box one at Wentworth Park. So that's where you, where he doesn't want to be.
Speaker 22Yeah. And it's a, it's a non-negotiable for him to begin better. Yeah. Because Jungle Johnny, from my point of view, there is a lack of speed in box two. There's a lack of speed in box four. He's stepping pretty well. If you want to give him an opportunity, no way in the world. I reckon he's in the box seat to get clear air. He's one of very few greyhounds in the country. You are not getting, if you give him clear air.
Speaker 2Imagine if Johnny jumps, just imagine. He's got 8,000 there at Wentworth Park and he's out in front. Would you say he's the most fitting winner? Yeah, he would be. Especially if he beats the track record in the final ever race, his own track record. I reckon that would be a fitting end to 94 years of racing at Wentworth Park when the track record holder wins the final ever race, the million dollar chase.
Speaker 22If he's three lengths off the lead attorney for home, where you think the noise at the start of the race is going to be loud. If he's three lengths off the lead attorney for home, the joint will fall down. That's a pretty good full stop. He can lead, Garrett.
Speaker 21There's no, absolutely no hope he can lead. But if he's, if he lobs second or third, like you guys are mentioning, it's going to be, it's going to be mental.
Speaker 2Absolutely crazy. Other races there you're looking forward to Saturday night?
Speaker 21Yeah. I mean, Magpie Hector began and led with a lap to go. This is the Sydney Cup for the days. That's not his caper. He just races so well there, but I'm really keen to have a play on Aiden's Warrior. I thought his run was excellent behind Magpie Hector. He's probably the safer beginner. Five dollars. He's drawn box. I would say, and there's a little bit of speed in the race, but I think he's racing career best for Aiden's Warrior. And at five dollars, I definitely want to have a play each way for sure. I can't believe they didn't
Speaker 2pay an appearance fee for my girl. She's still injured. Miss Envy. Yeah. She would have been great there at Wentworth Park. Be like pride of Jenny turning up there at Randwick. Probably just waiting for the stay as Top Gun, I'd say. Yeah. So that's Wentworth Park. It's going to be a great night. You'll be there, Jase?
Speaker 22I'll be there looking forward to it. It's going to be special. I think we're just going to look around throughout the night, Gareth, and think, this is amazing, a finny way to sign off from what has been one of the more iconic venues in Australian racing.
Speaker 2It'll be one of those nights, if you're lucky enough to have a ticket, just to go and talk to someone who has probably been there for 50, 40 years, and they could tell you so many stories. And a lot of the big punters that I know started working the bookies at Wentworth Park. Yeah. The big trotting and thoroughbred punters. So there's so much there. So many stories to be told. Brett Lee, the best moment, probably at Wentworth Park?
Speaker 21Yeah, probably at Fernando Bale, too. Winning an Easter egg off a wide draw was incredible. Tornado Tears, I was on track when he broke the track record there. I think he was probably the best stayer in the country by 10. He was that dominant. So that was another special moment. Do you have a favourite moment?
Speaker 22Probably 2015. The Nationals were held there and Fernando Bale won the sprint and the Great Sweet It Is won the distance. I think as far as favourite nights go for me, that's the one that stands tall.
Speaker 2If the dogs could come back in the best of the best over, say, 5.20 at Wentworth Park, who would win? What are the best dogs that have competed there?
Speaker 21I think you have to mention She's a Pearl because of her record at Wentworth Park. I think she was such a flawless beginner that she was just brilliant. Going back, Tent Hill Dole. who won a golden Easter egg while it was still on the grass, I think was one of the best greyhounds Wentworth Park's ever seen. So I'd say those two, yeah.
Speaker 22And Jungle Johnny, as much as we can talk about recency bias all the time, he has produced the fastest runs the joiner's ever seen.
Speaker 2Yeah. And do you know what? When I think the Daily Telegraph are putting their top 20 Wentworth Park moments, he has to be part of that.
Speaker 21He has to be. Yeah. And people have been, probably Jason's copying it too, I've had at least three or four people looking for tickets. When's that happened for a greyhound meeting?
Speaker 2No. No. So, yeah, it's incredible. Brett Lee's my favourite moment, 2001. I didn't even like, I had to watch that replay just to understand how good this Brett Lee was.
Speaker 21Yeah. Yeah. He did the same to win the Australian Cup at the Meadows. Dogs like that don't come around too often where they're that dominant. It's just incredible.
Speaker 2And I keep getting told about he was the last dog picked out of that litter. He was holding. He was hiding in the corner.
Speaker 21I worked at National Greyhound Forum. The litter advertisement came through. I still remember it. They were $6,000 a pup. Um, he sold most of them. He sold Brett Lee for $3,000 because he didn't have any visible testicles. And he was the runt of the litter. Yeah. They found out that one testicle, thank God was, um, it would have changed the breeding landscape in Australia. Um, and then he turned out to be what he is. A bloke bought him, sold him for a hundred thousand dollars. Um. After three or four starts, after breaking a couple of track records, named his next dog family first because a hundred grand back then, I think paid off his house and it changed his life. So yeah, it was incredible.
Speaker 2We'll take a break. We'll come back and talk about the Melbourne Cup Pro. It's never right. It's that time of the year. We'll talk about that next. Welcome back to Giddy Up Gareth Hall with you, Jason Adams and Georgie Faruja. So we've got the Melbourne Cup Preludes that kick off at Sandown tomorrow night. Um, what are you expecting there, Jason? What are you looking forward to most?
Speaker 22Well, all of them probably, uh, can you talk now jumping from box eight? I mean, he's one of the more emerging, exciting young greyhounds across the country. I think you'll handle it. Okay. But there'll be a lot of doubters out there. Given the history of, of box eight at Sandown, but I was really pleased, George, to see the amounts of Preludes that we've got in front of us tomorrow night. I mean, for the first round of them, which is normally you'd get three or four to have a thing, five or six. That's, um, it's a fair sign of what might be to come.
Speaker 21Yeah, absolutely. And in regards to Kenya talk now, you've got to give credit to trainer Anthony as a party, the way he's handled his 18 start career, winning 14 races. He sort of nursed him along in some provincial races, come to town, showed his ability against lesser class. Now we're starting in our, now we're going to see whether this greyhounds got the mustard, but, um, I can't see why he doesn't. I'm looking forward to seeing the New Zealander again, our power fan. And like, I mean, this greyhounds got really good early speed. I think it'd be hard to beat tomorrow at around $2.90. So there's some really, really good races.
Speaker 22Yeah. And for context as well, these dogs need to compete in a Prelude to be eligible, to be drawn in heats. So that's, so that's the purpose of them.
Speaker 2And then the heats are on, they're not far away now, really. 21st of November, whatever that Saturday is. Just over a month. About six weeks. Yeah. Five weeks. Yeah. And then the Phoenix is in the early part of December, the 17th, or the middle part of December. 12th, I think it is this time. Um, any update from your crew
Speaker 21on where you're leaning, Gareth, or are we tight-lipped?
Speaker 2Well, I'm glad I didn't go organized crime. If you can't win Adelaide Cup, how's he going to win a Phoenix?
Speaker 21Because he lost one race.
Speaker 2Yeah. Okay. They went too early, sportsmen. What are they thinking? They could have got a better deal. Um, I don't know. You're the man that's in charge along with Troy Little. I don't know.
Speaker 21I don't know. I don't know. Geez, there's a couple of handy greyhounds.
Speaker 2After how I went in that slot race there in the harness racing at Port Pirie, I think Hutchie's words were to me that the interns could have chose a better horse, Gareth, so maybe I've been, that responsibility has been taken away from me. Um, the grey chase final, having a look at the Bet365 market for this Saturday race, Starnote 350, Mpunga Turbo 4, Surge $4, Cruise Commander at $4.50, Little Monkey at $7. I don't think there's a Phoenix dog here, is there?
Speaker 21Uh, probably not. I mean, Starnote and Mpunga Turbo have both run their hands off the clock in town, but yeah, they've got to prove themselves, I suppose, as they're going through their careers. Starnote, um, was good last week, wasn't he, Jase? I mean, he got into a nice enough position and then powered to the line. He's gone as quick as 29.66 at the Meadows and he's come up as favourite. But their speed from Mpunga Turbo and Surge is at the end, like, I mean, it's not, it's not an easy race.
Speaker 22It's not. As much as Starnote's first split was pretty good. Yeah. But she's not doing that every week, at least at this point in time, whether this is a change in direction, we'll see, but I'd be happy to take him on. And that's probably with the likes of Surge, um, or, or Little Monkey as well. I mean. Got speed, Little Monkey. She goes really well. Yeah. So, um, Box 8, we know at the Meadows, it probably isn't too bad for one like her who can hang a little bit wide too, so she might be the value option at around $8.
Speaker 2A lot of great text messages coming through on the Garrard's Horse and Hound text line about their favourite moments there at Wentworth Park. My favourite. The first place at Wentworth Park would have to be Flying Amy. Talk about a dog so consistent out of the boxers, what a jet. Um, what about. Great Queensland. Yeah. They should break eight track records. Roman Moss, black top Zoom, top Roman Earl, et cetera. This is the launch of Wentworth Park.
Speaker 21Yeah. Yeah. Didn't even know if they were, they raced there. When did Wendy Park open?
Speaker 9Um, 94 years ago. Hmm. Hmm. Okay.
Speaker 21Um. Cause Harold Park was, was really big too.
Speaker 2Okay. So the Phoenix wrongly accused at $4. I might have to have a chat to Mark at straight after the race to see if I can get the deal done if he wins the, if he wins the million dollar chase. He's at 750 off the chart, 750. Can you talk now 10, consigliere at 10, Dramatical at 10, Storm Hustler at 11, Dewanastar at 12. So going, going nuclear, how can you pick it? I've watched the last couple of starts from my drawers.
Speaker 21Does, um, Storm Hustler, particularly your fan base. Yeah. He does.
Speaker 22He does. Mm. Yep. I was thinking exactly that same thing when Jay was reading through that list.
Speaker 21Yeah. He's obviously first reserve for the, for the million dollar chase and, um, I think
Speaker 2there's. Did he win the consolation? What price for the consolation? Uh, yeah, I think he's almost favorite I think for one of them. Yeah. Yep. Yep. So you reckon Storm Hustler?
Speaker 21I just probably what Jason is thinking is perhaps that mix of great early speed, Jase, to put himself in a winning position. It's early speed.
Speaker 22It's mid-race, mid-race pace as well, because it's one thing to get a good beginner who doesn't have that turn of foot when they're going really gets tough when they straighten up down the back. But I think Storm Hustler is, is one that can absolutely do that. He's drawn box six, um, Gareth
Speaker 21in race nine and he's around $4.40 against the likes of Vista Weird and Tour Galaxy and Ritzer Sophie's first reserve.
Speaker 2What'd you make of, um, the interview with Steve Griffin today with the new home for Ray at Grand Race in New South Wales at Richmond, obviously $70 million. He hasn't got the money just yet. He's hoping he'll get it off the government. I didn't hear the interview,
Speaker 21but I looked at all the stuff on social media yesterday and it just seems like they just got to get their house in order and what the hell's going on there. So, um, yeah, it's, it wasn't a, uh, a great look, but, um, if it's Richmond, it's Richmond, but it just feels like everyone's going to get on the same page, Jase.
Speaker 2Yeah. Yeah. I think there's obviously there's different opinions from the owners and trainers, um, so they want to build in a different, I think so. Yeah. But at the end of the day, Steve pointed out it's Grand Race in New South Wales, the PRA, they are running the show at the end of the day.
Speaker 22They are. And so they should be. Yeah. And, um, any decision they make is going to take a big investment of money. It doesn't grow on trees and I'm sure Steve has the absolute best lens about what is possible when it comes to relocating Metro racing in Sydney.
Speaker 21Yeah. It's great to see though, that I think while both camps have a similar idea in terms of building like a queue type complex where we're going to have a one turn, two turn, and a straight track, which I think is important. Yeah. I think
Speaker 2they're going to design a little bit off Geelong, they were saying. Oh, okay. Yeah.
Speaker 22Yeah. There's a lot of land at Richmond, I think, of which they own. So the flexibility of what they have there is probably the upside in going there.
Speaker 21Yeah. Any winners, Georgie? Yeah. I like a couple tomorrow. I just want to mention race three. I was talking to Jason off here about it. Race three at Sandown tomorrow, Mapunga Phantom versus House of Sins, I think is one of the clashes of the night. Okay. The two that I like, the New Zealander, I think will win. Race six, number seven, Opahwa Fanon, there's not a great deal of early speed in the race and went five seconds flat last week, I think will be hard to beat. The other one I'm keen on later in the program is race. I'm going against Consigliere here, race 11, number six, Flying Ducati, I think will be tough to beat at Sandown tomorrow.
Speaker 2Any winners at the Meadows before we let you go on, Vaporize, Little Rat, Shaggy Princess, any morals that you haven't told us about, Georgie?
Speaker 9No, mate. That was the only one that was race two. Thanks, Georgie. Appreciate that. All right, Jase.
Speaker 2Thanks, dude. We'll catch up with you next week. That is it for Giddy Up. It'll be a big show tomorrow. Giddy Up, Stable Mail, head of Caulfield Cup Day.
