Speaker 3sort isn't it obviously i look i never thought i'd see an nfl game live um watching don lane a thousand years ago on channel two two weeks after a game um to to see that come to fruition was pretty amazing um with my brother and his little ones who loved their 49ers that was awesome um obviously you know freeman as long as a cracking game i'll show them replay but um they um they were just too good for you despite the the silking they were too good and brisbane look i i thought that i think a lot of people thought they'd bounce back because when their backs up against the wall they've been able to do that i think their peak's still better than anyone's yeah um but they don't hit it as often as they should they're like the pondolawi of

Speaker 2correct yeah you only have to win when it matters yeah so we'll see how they go against of course hawthorne at the mcg on a saturday afternoon one of my favorite days is that saturday and preliminary final weekend because obviously the friday night but you got terrific racing like seven stakes on saturday at uh ram week you got the shorts as well which is nearly the final lead up to the everest and then in melbourne what a day it's going to be there at caulfield we've got the stakes which is one of the better underwoods that i can recall for some time looking at the field and also that sir rupert clark stakes and when you get a horse like tom kitten at the top of the weights lady shannon doll is going to be rocking up there's some progressive types um it's going
Speaker 3to be a beauty there on saturday gator no 100 it looks uh can't wait even for the noms to get through to come through that's uh let's tell you know how much we still still love this great sport after so many decades and remiss of us not to mention cheese and alibi off the top i know you but uh yeah just it's amazing to have her and autumn glow you know and we've only only a couple years ago seen the seen winks and then via sistina so and then this horse called kaying rising what
Speaker 2a time to be alive yeah it is a great time to be alive let's get stuck into the breakdown and we'll kick it all off as we look back to the group one macaibi diva stakes at flemington on
Speaker 4saturday the alibi route down the center of the track is also closing side side up to another will 250 out but she's a alibi glides on by then came autumn boy sir delius light infantry man she's a alibi 100 meters to go puts up two legs almost three legs what a magnificent win she's a star she's a alibi so she's alibi was brilliant gator and she did it
Speaker 2easily in the end to offer a moderate tempo for a group one but we sort of expected that didn't we she went she never really looked like getting beat no she looked to be traveling sweetly for a long
Speaker 3time i mean had the perfect run um i don't know there's too many big you know great big race riders and cool hand luke nolan i mean johnny cat might have i might have identified him as cool hand luke when he was an apprentice yes um testing my memory but um he just doesn't he's unfustered isn't he and nothing bothers him i love having him on when i'm when i'm backing a horse and um she had the perfect run but she didn't need it um she was just a little bit of a last one she was still jogging when they're all at max effort and these are proper athletes you know um and fails on by and um she look she didn't have she couldn't smash the clock if you're going 11 lengths below group on average um she had no chance of smashing the clock overall but the sectionals home were excellent as you'd expect from a good athlete off a moderate tempo right yeah what i did look at was last year's race which was a bit of a bit of a joke um you know so they went about 66 second first thousand this year um and they were all at max effort still 11 lengths below group one average but they would have led last year's field by about 25 lengths with 600 to run um and uh winner too good autumn boys the hay list really of um poor old hay poor old autumn boys in the back of she's an alibi a bit hasn't he and great to see another wheel back i think he's just a dry tracker you know i think he's a really really good horse this thing um but i just every time it's a wet track i think we risk him dry
Speaker 2track let's start including him it was a race i think it was a race i think it was a race i think i like them they're the first part of the race i reckon they went harder than we thought because treasure the moment worked from that wide gate so dillius wanted to be part of it as well i thought nolan's right early doors was she's alibi to make those work in the first and those horses i just mentioned the first couple of hundred meters was um exceptional so they all did a little bit of work i reckon to find their spots once they found their spots um it was a tempo that they were all comfortable at but yeah um she was just dominant and it was great to see something like that at flemington i reckon there was 10 000 plus there at flemington on saturday and uh she's getting people through the gates there's no doubt about that peter moody telling the team on correct weight yesterday that she's most likely now gated just to have one more run this spring so she'll go to a she'll go to the golden eagle on the back of a troll at packenham there's other options she could go to macaibi diva i'm not a macaibi diva a might and power but she'll have to be what two thousand meters back to 1500 in three weeks or she goes to a turac but she's probably going to get well she will get too much weight in a turac so um and we don't get to see her on champions day which is a little unfortunate because of the quick backup it's only a week between the golden eagle and and also champions day so we'll probably only get to see her once more this this spring but i love the way that peter moody talked about and explain that to us yesterday is that you got to look after her she's a four-year-old mare and we'll look after this time around and then hopefully we get to see
Speaker 3her for three or four more years after that yeah that's rule number one isn't it so you know i went And that was the rule. So you look after your athletes. That's rule number one. And it is non-negotiable. Everything else comes second. So that's what these great trainers do. Certainly Peter Moody, certainly Chris Waller, and pretty much all of them these days, don't they? So if that's your starting point, you're in a great place for longevity and sustained success.
Speaker 2What do we learn from the race outside of She's Alibi? It's going to be awfully hard to beat in a Golden Eagle. We'll start off with the, we'll go down how they finish. We'll start off with the second horse, Autumn Boy. He's a very good colt. And it was a great ride, I reckon, by Mark Sarra. And he finished a clear second in the end. I'm just having a look at the Epson market now because James McDonald's been booked. And he is, he's still the, well, he's the favorite basically because She's Alibi is at 350, so she won't be there. So Autumn Boy, $4, well-written, 4.33, and then Attica at 10. Mr. Miller at $10, and Altoff is at $11. Would you have him in front of well-written after watching him there on Saturday?
Speaker 3Yeah, I would have, and I do. And I had him as clear topic for that race
Speaker 2until you told me he was staying in Melbourne the whole time. Yeah, I apologize. That was a joke. That was my fault.
Speaker 3No, no, look, they obviously had two options with a really good horse. And if you look at his record without She's Alibi there, he'd be a five-time Group 1 winner, if you don't mind. Yeah. So look, he's not... He's not She's Alibi, obviously, because she keeps beating him easily. But he's very, very good. He's, you know, we talk about the A-pluses and the A's. So the A-pluses, I've got She's Alibi, Autumn Glow, obviously, Kai Ying, and then a whole stack of A's. And he's in that group, I think. He's an A-horse, as is another Will. I don't think Sidelius lost any admirers. He was under pressure a fair way from home and battled on really well. I think he's clearly looking for further now that he's a little bit older and did more than enough.
Speaker 2And when you have a look at Autumn Boy's career, as you pointed out, there's no She's Alibi. He's definitely not going to the Aston handicap. He'd be a multiple Group 1 winner and he's still got to carry a little bit of weight, I would imagine, in the episode. But yeah, he wouldn't be going to that race. So I reckon he's going to be hard to beat and he does get McDonald in that race. So we talked about another Will who was mighty. He was back to his best. Sir Delius, listening to some experts who watched him in the yard, I think he's going to be a little bit better. I think he's going to be a little bit better. I think he's going to be a little bit better. I think he's going to be a little bit better. I saw him in the yard as well. He was off his head in a way. Not off his head, but he was right on his toes. He was a horse that was excited to be back at the race, as it looked like. Was he a pass mark, the favourite for the Cox Plate in your eyes, Gator?
Speaker 3Oh, for sure. Yeah, I think he battled on really well all the way to the line. 1600, as he's become a little bit older, I think he's just right at the, obviously, right at the bottom end of his distance range. Was he a length off second? I don't know. I don't know.
Speaker 2Yes, and that won't be happening, unfortunately. Not this year. No. So you just don't think that 2,000 metres, and it's a stronger tempo race over the 2,000 metres, that Sedelius could hit back against his alibi?
Speaker 3Well, he's proven it the trip, and look what he did to Autumn Glow last year at the 2,000. So, you know, Autumn Glow was a hot favourite. She has an alibi with a hot favourite, but he was too strong for her at 2,000. So that's in the back of my mind. The more I look at she's an alibi, though, I think she'd be a lot stronger than Autumn Glow at 2,000.
Speaker 2Yeah, so you think that she'll be a better 2,000 metre horse than Autumn Glow. And saying that, Autumn Glow wasn't too bad over 2,000 metres.
Speaker 3No, she was really good in a fast run race, wasn't she? Yeah. The only knock on her that day was she didn't get past Lindemann. But look, she ran really well, and it was her only career defeat.
Speaker 5Yeah.
Speaker 3She's something else. But I don't know. Look, I'd have my life savings. Eight bucks on she's an alibi to beat Autumn Glow at 2,000. Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2And just having a look at the past Golden Eagle winners, like, they say that this hurts the Cox Plate. And Autumn Glow won it last year. She probably would have went to a Cox Plate if the race wasn't around last year. Maybe. Maybe, yeah. But she's proven now that they won't go down that path once again because they believe she's a sprinter miler. So, Lake Forest, Obambubamai, were the international horses. I wish I win. Moods probably thought he could get to 2,000 metres if he really wanted to, but that was never in his thinking. They went to the Everest instead. On Thunderstruck, Colette and Colding, those are the other horses that have won it. So, I know that there's talk about, oh, and, jeez, how much is this race hurting the Cox Plate? But when you have a look back at history, sometimes I think we can get caught up in the moment. Like, if she's alibi wasn't in this era, then, I don't know. I don't think this conversation would be as dominant as it is now. And I can understand why people are talking about it. And we would all love she's alibi to come here for a Cox Plate. And I don't know. And I was thinking, what other options or what other ways that Racing Victoria, working with the clubs, could do to get she's alibi to stay in Melbourne? Whether you put on a bonus for a Cox Plate into a Champion Stakes and Moonee Valley and Flemington work together, I think there's a few options that you could do, definitely. Like, if Harness Racing can put on a million-dollar bonus, surely, surely Racing Victoria could. Yep. So, but as Moods pointed out yesterday, is that this is a $10 million race for four-year-olds. So, even if you put on the bonuses and the Cox Plate was worth $10 million, it's still difficult to give up an opportunity to compete against your own age group for $10 million at the end of the day. Yeah.
Speaker 3Well, not much to add. I mean, you're spot on. And we had the same conversation with Alan Thunderstruck and Mick Price was saying, what do you want me to do? It's a $10 million race for four-year-olds. I mean, every single person, I think almost every single person in the history of racing would go down that path. So, I think what's relevant or pertinent around the Golden Eagle is, you've mentioned the winners, but the number of Group 1 winners behind them subsequently are the winners. I mean, all those races have been phenomenal. So, look, my query is just the programming of the race. I love the race, but my overarching view is the long-term survival, not survival, the long-term flourishing of our great game. And I think a best chance of that is all working together. And if we all did that, I think the race would exist, but in a programming, a better structured program. That's just my two cents.
Speaker 2And it's like when you look at, say, we'll talk about this on the means test, but you're at a board meeting, and you're at a board meeting for Racing New South Wales, and they're thinking, what is the best for Racing New South Wales? And what they've been able to do with the King Charles especially, and the Everest, of course, and now this Golden Eagle, they have interrupted the Melbourne Spring Carnival. By putting the King Charles where it is, and by putting the Golden Eagle where it is, it is difficult to have these horses compete at a Cox Plate, and a Champion's Day, because there's only a week between those races. So from that point of view, it has worked from a New South Wales point of view. Now, it's a different conversation if you're out of board for, if it was just for racing in this country, basically. You wouldn't have the same conversation. So that's the difference between our sport compared to other sports in a way, Gator. And I don't know, and there's people that will debate this, and they'll talk about it, but I don't think you're ever going to get, get the answer that everyone wants, because it's the way that the racing game's set up.
Speaker 3Yeah, no, look, I disagree with the last part of that. I think eventually we will all be working together, because racing will have to. Because of the competition, because of, you know, cost of living, all these things, punters now betting in 120-something percent markets, 75,000 dual acceptors and scratchings. We have to keep racing to flourish. I think we all will eventually, you know, maybe this generation, maybe the next one, all have to work together. And I think it's inevitable, but it just might not happen in our lifetime.
Speaker 2Well, hopefully it will. Mr. Brightside, good three, and we've mentioned this a few times here. As soon as he gets to a good three, he just doesn't want to stretch out. And it was a beautiful track when you talked to a few of the riders there on the weekend. It was a perfect good three, if you know what I mean. But, yeah, he wants it softer, I think, Mr. Brightside, after watching him on the weekend. And we might get to see him. There's a strong possibility we get to see him at Caulfield on the Sunday after the AFL Grand Final. And he reignites his rivalry with Pride of Jenny.
Speaker 3Yeah, wow. I think that'd be a great race to watch. I mean, he's clearly, you know, I think he can come back a notch, but as a nine-year-old, he's entitled to. Yeah. He's on 20 races. So, - Yeah, no knock there. Obviously, if you give, I'll pull it up a bit later. as well so um yeah second up off a long break the so no worries there the um the query uh with you know these uh these horses as they get a little bit older is um you know the up-and-comers you know same as footy and nfl and every other sport they sort of go past them it's inevitable yeah it's just a matter of when but credit where it's due that track was sensational on saturday i know we're the first to i'm the first to um really get upset with track bias and and trying to make it a level playing field for punters so we can win um but that was even roseville as well
Speaker 2tracks played beautifully yeah well done everybody involved there so well said gator and from a cup's perspective who do you want to be on she's a hustler half yours i hope he wins she's a hustler
Speaker 3half yours or half yours i think it's going to be obviously harder for him at the wake but certainly a good return
Speaker 2he would struggle to win a race unfortunately half yours he might be going as good as he as he was last year but he can't win a melbourne cup at top weight and um i don't think he can win a proper weight for h horse he might run out of his skin but that's that's who he is i think
Speaker 3yeah i think that's fair you know i think um you know handicaps are there for for a good reason and you can win our greatest race up in the weight like very elegant and gold trip but obviously you just need to be better than them and he did win the race clearly last year so i wouldn't be putting the cue in the rack if i had a share or a ticket but um but the task is

Speaker 3his strengths basically gator yeah his best runs are in really fast run races aren't they so uh that seems to be his one would um you know so when he sees a pride of jenny or um other races i think the australian cup the tab australian cup but he won it was a fearsome run race and he just he absorbs that pressure really well um when you're going this sort of speed at 1600 he's out sprinted so he lost ground as i straightened up but then then good through the line so that's him all right then we'll see you next week

Speaker 2that's a problem but we can we can go that's all right yeah yeah um just let us know i know it's a long way for you to go outside of your comfort zone and i won't reveal what suburb you live in but port melbourne's a beautiful place um simply sensational moment of the week there's a few that are coming through i forgot to mention this from the top we might get to see this horse in a melbourne cup it won the saint ledger on saturday the 250th running of the british saint ledger it's um one of five classics of course in britain racing and saffy osborne in the 250th running of the saint ledger won it on joseph o'brien's horse highway man at double figures it was about 11 to 1 it was a history making performance by saffy she was on the front page of all of the tabloid papers in the uk and there's a strong possibility that this horse will be coming for the melbourne cup and saffy will ride so there you go and she's half australian these days saffy osborne um she goes out with sam cavanaugh who is the ceo of kiramar racing so we can claim her a little bit um so there you go well under saffy so that could be nearly my nomination i reckon for my simply sensational performance of the week let's talk about the three-year-olds across the weekend we'll start off with the beside it bjorn baker i saw him at the races i reckon i caught up i'm not i saw him having a one of his pots he was having um at flemington in the members area and i walked past him and i reckon he was probably on his fifth or sixth and i thought maybe he's going to be a little bit more successful i thought maybe he's going to be a little bit more successful i thought maybe he's going to be a little bit more successful i thought maybe he's going to be a little bit more successful it's not a great idea to have a chat to the great man after after he took out another feature race but he was holding court there at the members what a man he is and this is what happened when he's three-year-old went down the straight at flemington on saturday
Speaker 4paradoxium 350 meters to go led by about a length and a quarter big sky and boobay about to launch hard kick under pressure organized crime out wider followed by buxy so the leader is paradoxiums got the way was here led by about a length and a half two in second place and boobay paradoxium trying to straighten up but it's clear and paradoxium won it by a length
Speaker 2and a quarter he did a few things wrong but he was very good still and he won pretty easily gator
Speaker 3what did you make of the beside in this year yeah he was too fast wasn't he so you know no reason to overanalyze things he ran along 29 5 6 first 500 so good solid clip sort of some two lengths below that group three average for three-year-olds uh he was left alone uh but kept running despite running about a bit so i think the other point is he gave a kilo and a half to him boobay and still beat him um so look he was terrific overall time good if you're breaking one three you're going really well uh the phillies were faster off a slower early speed and they carried you know two kilos above weight for age so if they race together saturno glow and i'm overexcited um beat him but that's not his fault he beats who he beat and he beat them well i don't think in boobay lost any fans had enough right on the ground and he beat them well so i don't think he beat them well and boobay was right on the line so either you know i think some fitness to come there and big sky with the 58 and a half he had the same weight as the winner and he battled on well bugsy was best of those closers and they beat the fourth horse pretty clearly so they're the ones to follow
Speaker 2yeah so paradoxium um is he good enough to go to a cool more now year long i've got two options i think they've got angel capital who they'll have to drop back from a sarupa clark stakes or they've got paradoxium which way would you go uh angel capital yeah for an everest oh for an everest i thought you said a cool morning that doesn't make sense no no you say for an everest so yeah they got two options i think you're along at the moment
Speaker 3yeah uh so i think look i think paradoxium's probably at least going to be on speed and might hold on for a play um angel capital i think i'd prefer him at 1400 for what it's worth
Speaker 2captain tebes is for the three-year-old phillies this is what happened and johnny o'shea was bullish about her chances but i think the scary thing for opposition is that she's got a lot of chances that he reckons she will be better over a trip maybe getting out the seven furlongs later this campaign but this is what santana glow did in the captain tebes there on saturday at flemington
Speaker 4towards the inside where gin twisters held together 350 out from lady catalina lucky brook for zane overexcited and satono glow launching claims down the outer at the 200 they've got to gin twist satono glow struck the front from overexcited it's a tono glow about a neck in front of overexcited trying to lift satono glow about a neck in front of overexcited trying to lift satono glow is just in front and scored satono glow from over so she was far too strong in the
Speaker 2end the second horse was very good as well and they raced away from the rest overexcited second at only her second race start scintillation was back in third the other big talking point out of this race was strizen who was beaten three lengths but never looked like it there on the weekend gator
Speaker 3no she didn't uh she was in that bunch for third so between third and ninth there was one length over all of them um the quinoa had near three lengths on the rest of them so uh you know and ran really good time here so satano guys run one two eight six off a near 32nd first 500 so um the boys division the poseidon uh they would have been leading uh the girls division by about two two and a half lengths uh with with 600 to run um yet satano go and overexcited were able to run faster time than them overall and add to that the winner gave two and a half kilos to overexcited and still beat her so she's carried um at set weight effectively two kilos more than the poseidon winner so you know death by analysis i should get a job on um yeah uh but yeah no she was she should be unbeaten satano go and she was exceptional I loved the win I loved the substance on the clock um I'm a huge fan I just went the wrong way with that top pick Streisand over her but um in the great tip I tipped them both backed them both sorry overexcited really good start number two let's bear that in mind off an exceptional debut win plenty of merit on the clock she's beaten everything else and I think she's beaten by a really good one so she wouldn't have lost any fans the next challenge for her is she's got to improve if she's going to turn the tables why because she carried two and a half
Speaker 2kilos left and and from that race after watching the winner do what she did surely you got to stay at the sprint trips with her and maybe aim her up at a cool more now yeah look I'm not going to
Speaker 3second guess John O'Shea and Tom Charlton they certainly know what they're doing when they get a good horse don't they so um it'd be interesting uh what she does do she seems to travel really well so I couldn't imagine a 1200 meter cool more being too sharp for her um she'll just find her

Speaker 3the Rose Gator yeah look the winner did a good job he went up and said second I went 35 8 first 600 so he had his chance to win and he keep going strongly to score I think saying got that cost himself you know by running about I wonder if there'll be a gear change there for him um I thought he was terrific to get so close and I think if he runs straight he wins under focus the start was pretty costly you know he's a he's a he was our top pick in the golden race he was a top pick in the golden race wasn't he so I don't think we've lost any fans there at the big price and Central Europe battled on well all the way you know um he did get the first half of his race uh manners were better than last up so he's on the improve and they beat the rest pretty clearly you mentioned Trombolt who
Speaker 2did more than enough given the task he was set so guest house 275 for a golden Rose St gotha had five goals well woven six Trombolt nine and then Central Europe 11 under focus 11 goals and this will be the race where then the trainers make the decision are they cool more horses or are they a Caulfield guineas horse St gotha will be a cool more horse guest house will be an Everest cool more horse well woven interesting hearing Bjorn Baker yesterday thinking that he could be a Caulfield guineas horse Trombolt a Caulfield guineas horse Central Europe a Caulfield guineas horse and I would imagine under focus would be a guineas horse so in saying that gator when you have a guineas market um and these Sydney horses are still going to come to Caulfield and get the job done and we've seen many a good horse a good three-year-old not handle Caulfield but Trombolt is the five dollar favorite well woven 750 American Eagle at nine and then stormy Marco at nine under Focus at ten dollars and a horse like Central Europe you're getting thirteen dollars um so I'm looking forward to the Caulfield guineas this year I reckon it's going to be a beauty there's a lot of handy Sprinter miles I reckon in that age group

Speaker 6because he probably didn't deliver to how we know he can go like the horses that are beating today I personally believe he's got lengths on them I think you just put it down to it's his first time down the straight he's the type of horse that every time you serve something to him he gets better from it away from the straight in the future we just have to back him in and know he'll be better for the run down the straight I personally believe as I said already he's better than them he just didn't handle it his first day experiencing it but I think you soldier on towards Caulfield back to where he knows two weeks we all get our confidence up again um it is disappointing today but don't lose too much faith or worry just yet he's learning still he's experiencing new things and he'll be better for people I know we have some concerns you know that he does like soft ground he is good on soft ground but to me he didn't feel like he was jarring up he was just very unsure of his job out in the middle of the track so he'll be better for it and yeah hopefully we bounce back to our best at Caulfield

Speaker 8yeah i'll be honest um meeting really doesn't really screw down a lot um so you just we i know we i had an idea um where i'd probably like to be um but i was i was mindful that um both um the delius and a moment uh maddie lori's horse treason the moment yeah present moment they were going to probably have to work by me um and horse occurrence might have it to do so as well so i was going to have to make sure they were going to have to do a little bit to sort of get by me so um but the work the race did work out well um you plan for what you plan for the rest of the race and hope for the best and that's probably what worked out um on saturday so after that initial
Speaker 2burn i guess in the first couple of furlongs um did the tempo go to plan after that in your eyes
Speaker 8is that what you're expecting uh well you just never you you never know what to expect i suppose but i just thought once i found out order that they would have gone to come back um like uh right so i did last year he walked yeah um and and he was hard to run down so i thought well i'm going down the result as a result so um he was always in a position where he's uh going to be controlling the tempo so um but um just put the shuffle up with um another wheel going to go to the top um then uh blake came away from from fence and then forced uh craig williams on civilians out again um i just always just let it all unfold in front of me and i just i just smoked my pipe and read packed it and kept smoking it so uh they worked out perfectly for me um obviously she's a different
Speaker 2horse to ride compared to black caviar we all know the success that you had with her but um what do you love about her what what's the best thing about she's alibi in your eyes um probably fred
Speaker 8to be honest because he's really embraced he's really embraced um he's the ownership of her and he's allowed to share but he's been really um he's made himself really available um to everywhere all you all the press outlets and stuff like that so i don't like doing this much so no um so he he's really taken that on board and he could be congratulated for it and i really like it too because i don't have to do it as a result but just just the story of fred like uh the mayor side and she's amazing um but um just fred just buying her for 10 000 in the right he's been on board for 10 000 years and um i think that's that's something um you dream about and he's still he's going through that dream as you speak and he's been very um open and and allowed everyone

Speaker 2it's it's been wonderful and it must give you confidence too trump because we all know the relationship that you've had with moods over such a long time and all the success that you've had under the under so much pressure at times especially with black caviar but you've always been able to to um succeed at the highest level when there's been pressure on you guys but um it sounds like fred's just um obviously he expected to win there on saturday but he gives you the confidence as well with the belief that um just to go out and do what you do
Speaker 8best well that's it um and well they're not they're very similar so you you do and if we get beat we get beat like i don't the world won't end so um you go out there and he that's what he said when we um fred said when um pete decided to take on autumn guy first up in the wings he said well i've been beaten before so we might have a crap show um and that's that's the wonderful mindset to come go into racing like there was a lot of there was a lot of because he's obviously very short in the market is it is it expectation of um success but uh we're we we are in a um a competitive race um atmosphere and things things happen in racing and and some of us it's out of your control so um he's a he's a realist um and or both both peter and um fred are so uh you're always in a good fun moment to go as a result because of it
Speaker 2yeah and you're right um you're right luke because i was going to say say this for the means to us but like this horse is exactly what racing needs and um you've got pete moody is terrific with his time fred nosky has just embraced this and and given us all hope that you can find a horse online for ten thousand dollars and and and live the dream and even your story mate um everything that you've been through like all the injuries that you've had after the black caviar era and um how many comebacks that you've actually had and the perseverance and the belief that you've had in yourself not to to give up in a way luke and to um continue to to strive to for greatness and um i think your story is part of this is inspiring in itself mate with everything that

Speaker 2she she's i think we're all and it's not going to have happy happen this spring but um i think everybody would love for you guys to have another crack at autumn glow and you to go past maca and
Speaker 8get it give it to him after the line too yeah i don't know it's good for racing i'm not sure how many years i haven't actually how much longer probably a little more i'll be about um obviously she's got a very good record yeah that she is yeah she's the principal in her uh our um our breeders yeah they're probably mindful of um them not leaving at all on the tracks but uh pete and fred well fred loves the race horses yeah this is what he's doing of course so i think we'd look after a for a four year old season because uh mares they they they probably take a bit longer to furnish than uh than their male counterparts and as a result they just keep improving probably into their five and six and sometimes even seven year old seasons so yeah um if that's the case we've got three good years in front of us so if we look after uh give her a chance um she'll raise
Speaker 2the longevity hopefully um thousand guinea scores i i've loved her i remember talking to wiley and pete i reckon before her first start and he said that um she's going to be a good filly especially when she gets over 1600 meters and i thought she was excellent there and the mike maroney on saturday autumn lover can she win a thousand guineas on that we'll be close

Speaker 9as expected gareth yeah rail at five meters uh top six in run was a significant advantage but generally is at that setup it was pretty hard and fast sort of surface uh gee probably playing closer to a a good three uh the track but um i think it was eight out of ten winners were top
Speaker 216 run but no real surprises there um what do you make of the race or what do you make of the meeting we'll start off with the feature race there the run to the rose and um war woven was too strong
Speaker 9yeah too strong and it's interesting sort of set up so the the shape of the race gareth they went pretty quick early to the 800 meters so the first 400 meters was fast and then they really just you know put the anchors uh on there dropped the anchor i should say and uh really sort of set up for a war woven so look there's some merit in some of those horses in behind i think war woven got everything to suit castillo king came across and then um his run was okay uh st gothard's one was pretty good what woven did sort of run out in the straight as well gareth so i think he was adding some merit to saint gothard who's then almost put a bit of pressure on central europe late so from the race itself i heard that the potential that they want to maybe take war woven to a guinness i'd be shocked if he yeah i'd be shocked if he goes beyond 1400 meters um i think that might even be his level of 1400 meters max maxing out of what we saw there on saturday saint gothard was really good gareth you could definitely follow him with a bit of confidence uh if he didn't if warwever doesn't come out on him i think he probably wins the race would you agree with that
Speaker 2um i thought he had his chance still saint gothard i thought he had his chance to run down more woven um yeah he did come out on him late under focus is really good yeah he was good he went past central europe what have we made of our horse here we've given up on him yet or i reckon i'll give him one more chance 1400 i think 1400 is going to be his best trip even getting to a mile
Speaker 9he's a victim of his own hype isn't he really and we're probably going to blame there but yeah he's a victim yeah by a frank call so he's going to be better to the 1400 meters we've said all along that we want to be on him for a goal or something like that but i don't think he's going to be able and rose and if if you know and he's spd five dollars so um if there wasn't a mid-race slow down i think he he sort of finishes a lot closer and he's only been beaten 1.84 length so he's probably out of this race yeah he and under focus are the two going to 1400 meters that i'd be really keen on jeep so i wouldn't be dropping off but everything's price sensitive in this game so if it was two dollars you'd be a bit nervous yeah what horses do you want to be taking out of that race uh central europe and under focus the two horses trombone was good but you'd want to be closing off well if you settled that far off them uh call me a disappointing plagiarism disappointing brazilia is only okay i'd be taking on war woven next start g skyhook um was too strong in the theo

Speaker 9we made the tear each way well we're on skyhook to win and magnitude around a place so that was good it was a good result um for those tuning into to winners here on saturday uh the race itself really good ride from uh from kieran ma i started kieran marg goodness me i'm sure he'd do a good job as well kieran mcavoy uh came across i went slow again so i came across dictated landed a really good position natural does what nash does on sandpaper but skyhook good magnitude good i'd say a faster tempo play would have helped magnitude get a little closer get into a dog fight he appreciates that but he's come back in good uh good fashion uh midnight in tokyo is probably disappointed expected to be a bit more uh from her g but moving forward i think skyhook and magnateer is the ones and they finish in the top two so obviously start probably a bit shorter
Speaker 2next time i was kicking myself savvy hallie 20 to one like if you give her for one bad run i think they i think she'll get into the everest the mulberry really yeah i think that's they think that at the start of the preparation that was their horse for the everest i think she's owned by um well i know that she might not be in the owned by mulberry but um obviously brad whitip trains for that organization who has a slot in the everest so i think they were talking anyway whether she's done enough now to get into that race time will tell but um she did enough to win she was very good i thought there on the weekend yeah she was really good and she set a good tempo
Speaker 9so you know she's nash has just done what nash does went out dictated and proved too good for them so full credit to the horse and i think you know going back on going back through her profile and thinking you know how would let her go go around at 20 20 to one and when she gets in front and she rolls with natural ruler board that's when she's clearly at her best and first up last preparation was a gold coast and didn't put up a great figure got beaten 2.5 and and didn't lead and then similar this this preparation first up 11 meters didn't find the lead and didn't run near her best when she's out in front rolling that's when she produces her best and she's certainly done that so it'd be great to see her in everest it would be great to see her in everest it would be great to see her in everest on speed with natural wheeler aboard why not horses to follow from that

Speaker 9rip it up we'll start nice and early gee i think better late was really really good in uh in the midway just pressured and um unfortunately brought undone by j mac and nathan doyle nothing worse yeah that hurt i thought it appeared was really good so you can follow that as a winner in um in race number three uh race four there's a few horses we can follow gee i thought scripted um was pretty good sectionally beside the ocean and it is zero was zero was flying home so beside the ocean it is there are clearly the two genesis runner in race six like any any form of positive ride there from karen um he did it on skyhawk but not a genesis runner that horse wins that race um so you could follow genesis runner version wonder was good too with excuses got smashed out the back of course savvy holly we can continue to follow her um she was really good on speed so we'll stick with those g what about intent like we all thought

Speaker 12golden eagle is that is the sole focus now i only see two ways of going there she won't go to sydney again before the golden eagle so unfortunately the king charles which is the perfect race but it's run in sydney um so that's i would say 99 off the table so that brings us back to probably caulfield and you've got two races in three weeks you've got the turac or you've got the might and power do we give her exposure to 2 000 meters um and then go three weeks back to the mile of the or the 1500 of the golden eagle and that's a well-worn path for a lot of years a lot of trainers have done that very successfully with good horses three weeks 21 days back to a mile so and does that give us you know it's a little bit autumn glowish in the in the queen elizabeth you know if we go and run in a might and power and see at 2000 strong does that then open the door for us at the queen elizabeth or australian cup or whatever come the autumn and and maybe a cox plate this time next year or if she doesn't fails to run it out you know you maybe you take off the table uh option but and we don't need to flog her around with 60 kilos on the back for you know i'm listening to you said i'm i don't know what weight she'd get i suppose it depends what norms but she'd get a significant weight now um and option c which is probably the smart play is we don't run again until the golden eagle i would think if she runs before the golden eagle it's probably a caulfield in the might and power if she doesn't run uh we'll have a trial and go straight to the golden

Speaker 13going to happen no but if she goes to the golden eagle and she wins the golden eagle what it's going to do is it's going to make the golden eagle a better race as in history excuse me and i'm not a mad historian from that point of view i'm not jared waitley or bruce mcavaney that you know i i i want to be moving with the times and things like that and the golden eagle wasn't invented 20 years ago so all of a sudden if you get horses like this that can win all of a sudden it elevates the golden eagle to a much much better race and and it is because of the prize money and that you're four years of age only once and you can't she can't run in the race next year and you know so there's always going to be time put it this way you might run 2000 i don't know but you might run 2000 this prep but next prep or the prep after you might be able to run 2000 as an older horse and the other thing is why why do you need to you know what i mean you don't you don't have to it's one you know journos always ask you on racing.com and things like that yeah yeah do you reckon it'll run further do you reckon it'll run further i mean you know you don't have to she doesn't have to run anywhere past a mile if she doesn't want to so luke nola reckons she'll be a better 2000 meter horse well it was the autumn glow wasn't it last preparation you know everyone thought she'd run 2000 and i still she did well i still reckon she did but she didn't win so everyone went oh she didn't run 2000 hang on a minute she got beat two lengths to sir delius like it's not like it's hack forms so at the end of the day it is all and i've said this how many times i've said this when you got the great horses then it gets very difficult because behind the scenes you're mentally frying yourself thinking i have to get the right decision we've got to do the right thing and i know that you did the same in a benchmark 64 somewhere but there's a little bit more pressure when you've got these sort of uh these sort of horses so quite interesting that you know peter said that they might run in the uh the might and power over 2000 would you do that um i don't know because peter also said he wouldn't run he may not run her again until the golden eagle now as a as an outside trainer looking in that's that's that was a bit of a wow for me that that that raised my eyebrows but smiling not not negatively going gee is she that sort of horse that she could go into that race fresh because it's a fair way to the golden eagle and i know you could have a barrier trial in between but it's not the same as being race hard fit isn't but other but there's not
Speaker 2too many options for her like she goes to a churrac with 60 on her back johnny and that's probably too tough on her and she's not going to be able to do that and she's going to have to do that and she's going to have to do that and she's going to have to do that and she's going to have to do that and her and not fair on her and then the might and power where she's 2000 meters back to 1500
Speaker 11within three weeks yeah look i mean i get the impression moods will just trial her yeah as you said so he's running for 10 million dollars he doesn't need to go around in the other two races and she was very dominant on the weekend i think from a from a keen sort of racing enthusiast we have an opportunity at the moment to watch three absolute freaks run over the next 12 weeks so kying rising is going to come out and we're going to get to watch she's an alibi in in that big race in sydney so ultimately you know there's uh there's going to be a lot of excitement around those three horses i'm actually glad that they're not meeting i think um let's well because i think what we need to do is just enjoy those horses in the races there's races put on for those for those horses so you know the the star from hong kong kying will come out and blow them away and blow them away in the everest there's no doubt about that um and then you're going to have she's an alibi just an emerging horse that as we're saying moods wants to look after her and race her for uh for another three or four seasons so go and win the 10 million um you don't need to be running in in any other races i wouldn't have thought and then and then you've got a man who doesn't want to compete against her of course well i mean i think and i think from um our perspective it opens up opportunities in some of the other group one races now so the underwood on the weekend is a winnable race for a number of horses you'll then go to the might and power it's a winnable race for a number of horses um i'm not quite sure uh the macaibi what's the 2000, the Turnbull. Might and power. No, the Turnbull, the Turnbull. So that again now is a, is a winnable race for a number of elite horses, Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup. So outside of that, um, it opens up opportunities for plenty of others. I think.
Speaker 13Wayne? Another thing Peter said was the, you know, the 2000 back to the, back to the mile. Now I'll bloat the nose. 1500. 1500, sorry. I'll bloat the nose a bit more about it than I, and a hell of a lot more is John Hawks. And he reckons that's a load of crap when everyone goes, oh, I don't know whether they'll be able to do it or not. Cause you know what his question always is? Why can't they? And this is coming from him. This is not coming from someone that wouldn't know. This is coming from a bloke that does know. And he said, wouldn't be a problem. I'm not talking about this exact horse, but just when, you know, you often hear people talk about, oh, gee, it's coming back in distance. And he always says, well, what's the big deal? What, what, what, what does it, what does it matter? You know what I mean? Really? When it, when it's all said and done. So.
Speaker 2You surprised we don't see more of that, say from Caulfield Cup to Cox Plate?
Speaker 13Probably. Probably. You know what I mean? I mean, it. Look, it's, I suppose it's probably a thing that's not done that often, but I mean, you had to run the Caulfield Cup and you had to run on Derby Day in either race, the McKinnon or the Dalgety or whatever it was called back in the day. And you had to do that. And, you know, cause Bart said you had to do it. So you had to do it. So all of a sudden Doremus went Caulfield Cup straight into a Melbourne Cup. And then that pretty much changed everything. And now we don't even, in theory, we don't even have Melbourne Cup runners on Derby Day anymore. So in 20, 20 years, things have done a complete change and that's okay. Cause the sport's changing and it's not. Not that the quality of the horse isn't there. And the toughness of the horse isn't there. That's part of the problem because you've got to run on a Saturday and then back up three days later with, in theory, no help whatsoever. I haven't seen any, I haven't seen an easier win in that race. That's the easiest, that was extraordinary. Can we, can we look at the race because it was very muddly upfront. Wasn't muddly as in slow tempo, but there was a lot of horses getting, you know, didn't have the perfect run in transit and if we don't win, win, win these days, oh, it's going no good. And was Sir Dilley's that bad a run? Was he? He ran okay. I thought, I thought, I thought all autumn boy ran really well from the back clearly. Can we just go back one step though, before we analyze this, the Wink Stakes is perfect example of it ran crap, it ran crap. It didn't run good. It didn't run good. Have a look at the form out of the Wink Stakes. Now it's stacking up everywhere. Is that right? Because horses have run in the Winks, have gone on to bigger and better things. And we looked at a lot of horses and everyone's gone, oh, that didn't run so good and everything like that. So even the mems are like autumn boy, I'm just saying, put that in perspective.

So go into Sydney Harbour. Go into St Kilda Marina. Have a look at the boats that are sitting there. They get used twice a year. Look at paintings on the wall that are worth a fortune. You never use yours, do you? I don't have one. I've got a rubber ducky. So at the end of the day we do this for ego. And if you look at blokes like Chris Waller, he sets everything for the cocks plate because he's told me himself that is the race that I want to win. That is the race. So that's why you're setting these horses for those races. And we have a choice. So I reckon that's a good thing. We don't have, I'll tell you what has happened and this is a fact. What has happened with horses the middle has gone from the middle and dropping and the middle to the top has getting very thin. So the middle to bottom is getting lower and the middle to top has raised and there's less horses at the top and there's more at the bottom and there's less in the middle because let me tell you, some of these horses that are winning black type races today, they would not have won 25 years ago. And some of these horses that are winning at Sandown today would not have been good enough to win midweeks at Canterbury and Sandown and they are week after
Speaker 11week. And you've got to look the other way too, right? There are three-year-olds that are down that came down on the weekend. Both Sydney horses won the lead up basically to the Cornwall, right? So they're down here for that. He could chuck as much money as he likes at a horse race up there but the Cornwall is a stallion making race. Correct. So that's why they bring the horse here. It's not even a prize money scenario, right? So he could chuck whatever money he wanted to, Peter, at those races in Sydney to keep them there, but they wouldn't stay. They'd come down here. So it's just a mix and match scenario. Well, you send the horses, we can get the best result and follow the money where you can.
Speaker 2I just think sport, I love the sport of racing and sport's at its best when you get to see the best take on the best. And at the moment there's one real grand final race and even this year, the best feel won't be assembled for the Everest because of the carrying rising factor, I think. But there's not too many

My brother has told me every year he's been there, he said it's like being at a normal off-season Saturday. No one turns up. People are turning up for the prize money that have got connections, but the public are not turning out. Everest Day is huge. But what they can't compete with us is, from Caulfield Guinea's day on, we're it. We're up and about and we have the carnivals and you speak to the Nick Smiths and people like that from Royal Ascot and those buggers are just in awe of what we do over the spring carnival. It is, you know, it's on steroids what we do.

Macarena drew 20 out of 20 and was in front with 200 to go and ran fifth and got beaten a length and a half. And she draws barrier one, she wins. So She's Alibi draws a crap barrier for her and gets you into all sorts of trouble. Because remember there was a field of 16 and that emergency was one of the imports which they invited. So then they turned the race into a field of 20. It's too many runners.
Speaker 2So the Golden Eagle, you get 5.25 for winning, you get 2 million for second. Correct. A million for third, 500 for fourth,
Speaker 13250. And you know what? Go and have a look at the Cox Plate. Look at the Cox Plate, please. And tell me what the winner of the Cox Plate's going to get. It'll be three. I think it's around that. Yeah, it'll be around that. So I mean to run second in a Golden Eagle is going to be worth nearly the same as winning the Cox Plate. Cox Plate you get around three

Speaker 2I've got text messages coming through. My simply sensational moment of the week was seeing 13,000 fans at Flemington. They didn't expect that many, but to see all the young fans in the sun, we are back. So that was terrific. It was a great day there at Flemington. Massive crowd.

Speaker 2She will not get one ounce more than 60 kilos. Bart had everyone bluffed. Of course, she won't run again until the Golden Eagle. Worried 1,500 too short if did. That's why the Golden Eagle is 1,500 in place there. A few more questions coming through. Johnny?
Speaker 13Well, it used to be 1,500 at Rose Hill. 1,500 at Rose Hill. It's just a brilliant, brilliant distance. That's why they moved the race to Randwick. Yeah. And it hasn't made any difference to the crowd participation because, as I said, people just don't turn up.
Speaker 2The beaten favourite was a little bit of another day. He was a short prize favourite down the straight in the Bobby Lewis and he finished fifth. We'll play the grab from Harry Coffey. This was a terrific insight as well, talking to the owners after the race.
Speaker 6Obviously, it's disappointing because he probably didn't deliver to how we know he can go. Like, the horses that have beat him, I personally believe he's got lengths on them. I think you just put it down to it's his first time down the straight. He's the type of horse that every time you serve something to him, he gets better from it. I wouldn't be shying away from the straight in the future. We just have to back him in and know he'll be better for the run down the straight. I personally believe, as I said already, he's better than them. He just didn't handle it his first day experiencing it. But I think you soldier on towards Caulfield. Back to where he knows. Two weeks, we all get our confidence up again. It is disappointing today, but don't lose too much faith or worry just yet. He's learning still. He's experiencing new things and he'll be better for today's outing. The track's beautiful. I know we have some concerns that he does like soft ground. He is good on soft ground. But to me, he didn't feel like he was jarring up. He was just very unsure of his job out in the middle of the track. So, he'll be better for it. And, yeah, hopefully we bounce back to our best at Caulfield. A couple of weeks' time.
Speaker 2So, there you go. There's Harry Coffey. Would you forgive him for that run?
Speaker 11Yeah, look, some horses just don't handle it. And I saw the interview with Tom during the week and he just sort of said, look, the horse is airborne. Can't be any happier. And as long as he gets down the straight, he should be able to win. So, he never looked comfortable, really. He sort of was thereabouts. Got his head up a couple of times. And so, look, you know, get him back around to bend again and we'll see.
Speaker 13It's the hardest place to win a race anywhere in the country is down the straight. Seasoned super horses have gotten beaten up the straight of Flemington and, you know, whatever, mentioned him for a while. Chautauqua. He never won a group one 1,200 up the straight. He won the Lightning, but he didn't win a 1,200. And he's got so many mates that just don't run as good up the straight as what they do around a bend. And the biggest, biggest anomaly about the whole lot is we don't generally go hard to the outside fence anymore like we used to in years gone by. But having had most of my horses in Sydney, you would think being on the outside fence, it makes a difference. It's better for them because that's the way that the fence is on the right-hand side. It makes no difference. They still want to roll. If any horse is going to lay, they'll lay in away from that fence. And it doesn't make any sense because in Sydney, that's the way they, their lead legs, their right leg, they're hard against the fence. But you're going to ask the jockeys, if they're going to do anything, they'll always roll away from the outside fence. So that doesn't make any sense either. It's a very, very unique place.
Speaker 2So Manicato Stakes, he's still the second favourite. Are you confident? Are you confident Jimmy Starr's a better horse than a live another day?
Speaker 13Yep. Yeah.

Speaker 13Would that just fire everyone up? I've got a slot race, 1400. And that's why the All Age Stakes in the autumn ends up being the great race because everyone runs in it because it's really the last group, one of the autumn. And there's very, very few 1400 metre races that are around. It's a bit like having your sprinter in the spring. There's not enough races for your sprinters in the spring. But in the autumn, there's stacks of them. And in the spring, we've got Caulfield Guineas, Thousand Guineas, all these races. And Coolmores, there's not enough of those races in the autumn because they use our three-year-olds to bolster up the older horses in the autumn. We'd love to get some names on these text messages.

Speaker 2girls have got that my other chris martin the seymour ceo says great singer yeah very good singer ready just wanted to rule the world here we go just wanted to correct a couple of comments wayne hawks made about seymour on yesterday's show this is two weeks ago the suggestion that the track drains at 700 millimeters per hour is simply ridiculous if it drained anywhere near that quickly we wouldn't be able to irrigate it the actual drainage rate is around 80 to 100 120 millimeters per hour there was also a comment that if seymour had received another 70 mils before the first race last thursday the meeting would have been called off of course it would have been in serious doubt 70 mils on top of the amount of rain seymour and the wider regions already received would test any turf track in victoria the fact is the track improved from a heavy 10 to a heavy eight and raced extremely well winners came from on the speed and back in the field and from the inside and wider out track teams across victoria are dealing with an incredibly difficult winter by all means analyze tracks but comments need to be factual continually um saying tracks and people working their backside off or having a crack at tracks and people working their backsides off to present them present them in the trying weather conditions doesn't help anyone they were all yellow hope these facts get clarified there you go i'm not going to say who told me that they drained at
Speaker 13700 mils an hour because it'll throw someone on the bus but i will go back and ask them and then come back and clarify next week hang on that's number one number two if you if any track has 50 mil of rain before the race you're going to be called off i don't care who you are it was flemington that year that uh i think it was kira mcavoy won for the shake there was the the mountain enclosure was underwater and epsom road was underwater and we raced on a seven later that day i was the one on after the last with shane anderson and i tore strips off of seymour racing club because that kid and i don't know his name but he was a young boy who was the curator there was getting the shires now kicked out of him because when that track was in big trouble and seymour was out of whack for four years now correct me if i'm wrong four years might have been three and a half but it was years that track was out i drove past seymour and went to the track a couple of times just to actually observe it so i actually called them out on after the last with shane anderson years ago because everyone was into the curator when every other person involved and every other person that had an input all stood back and went hiding all right then yeah so i was told it was 700 and i won't say who by because it's an industry person but i will go back Back and ask that person after the show. Because my point was that if you had draining at that sort of amount, you're 300 metres above sea level. If it drains like that, we're going to need Noah's Ark to get us out of the trouble.

Speaker 13After the track was first put down, that's what it drained at. 600 or 700. 600, 700 mil an hour. Yeah. Then, so it was crap. They then had it at 600, 700 mil an hour. That's when they were throwing dish plates back and horses were getting black eyes left, right and centre and horses were nearly losing eyes. Then they went and they reconstructed the track and the track is now at 60 to 80 mils an hour. So technically, no, not technically, I was wrong and I was wrong, but I was- So you apologise? Well, I apologise for how the track is right now. No, no. Don't laugh. I've got no problems with being wrong. I'm wrong every bloody day. I'm wrong every day of the week. So I am happy to say that I'm wrong from that point of view, but it was the previous track that they put down, we never, we raced on for two minutes, was 600 to 700 mils an hour. And the people that were in control of everything stood back and that poor bugger that was the young curator at Seymour, they hammered the hell out of him.

And one of the great stories is Tyler Donaldson-Aitken, the job that he's done with Welcome to the Show has been extraordinary. And it was a great victory there. So it might, it might come down and blow them away. But I will say that Guesthouse is certainly going to know it's in the race with those two horses. And I really thought, you know, going back to Chocolates, I think to have a, to have a daughter of a Melbourne Cup winner, now knowing that we're going to run in a Melbourne Cup for, for Lawrence Eels, similar ownership and Paddo and a few of the crew, they put the blinkers on, master move. And, and Harry Coffey. And Harry Coffey went bang. So I thought it was terrific.

Speaker 2Hello to you, Pete. Good morning to you, G. Hall. What did you make of Flemington on Saturday? Did you enjoy yourself?
Speaker 15I got something on St. Lawrence in the last. So at least I was able to smile or at least give half a smile as I was on the train afterwards. But look, it was a good day. It was a great day, actually. It was T-shirt and shorts weather. Glad I didn't wear the long pants and the full suit like yourself, G. But no, it was a good day to kick off spring. And we've only got things to look forward to. Big flashing light run, Bugsy. I'd love to see him over a little bit. A bit further ground. But I think he's nominated for the Coolmore as opposed to going down the Guinness path. Anyway, that's my perspective. And Sass Appeal, I thought on the replay. That is probably one of the big performances of the day, which will go missed. Very soft late in betting for the O'Brien camp. But she was clearly the best of those runners on pace. So I think Sass Appeal, she's on track for whatever group one she's aimed at.
Speaker 2There was a few critical of her on the text message today. But I think it's more of the expectation, really, because of the price. I'm a bit like Gold Coast Bell. Could not have gone any better. Correct. And there was more tempo in a few of those races, early doors, than we thought. But that's a challenge in a way as well. She had been winning races when she's been able to dictate it out front. And then sometimes you get races when there's pressure on and then you become vulnerable. That's just the way the game works. The slower you go, the better chance you are winning if you're up in front. And the harder you go, it makes it tougher, doesn't it? It's pretty simple, Pete. Yeah.
Speaker 15And we also saw some pretty... Pretty significant slowdowns there on the turn there at Flemington. There was a lot of races that changed complexion very quickly. And, yeah, it's a really good meeting to do the form for and to go through and make sure you've got all your sectionals right and all that sort of jazz. So I've spent more time on Flemington than I have Belmont G. And the main reason for that is, well, we had two 10-year-olds win there at Belmont on Saturday. And I'm not sure if that's necessarily happened before. But Admired was almost one year and one day to the day where Admired won a million to one at Belmont. Same track, same distance. So the connections have leveled, staked Admired throughout his career. They're so far in front, they're probably off to buy an island right now. So were also one at 50 to one. And, Jay, if you'd told me on Friday when we're talking about this horse, Rissols, if you'd told me that William Pike had won four on the day of the eight races and Rissols had run the fastest last 600, 400, 200, 100 of the day and backed into favouritism and I got beat, I've had a really bad day. So I don't even know what you make of this meeting. It was really difficult. The horses to lead and win and to keep going, it certainly suited horses that were back and wide. I'm just going through the maps now and there's about three or four races where the field is completely inverted to the point where the last three or four and run have run the first three or four. So this is going to take me a long time to get through this Belmont card.
Speaker 2Yeah, Haida Gwaii's come back enormous, however. Michael O'Leary and Chris Parnham given a Ginnivan for his second, Jack, for Jimmy Taylor. Well done to Spud. He was all over Hurricane Harley that wins the last, defeating the horse. But you didn't mind Champagne Crusader. Snow God was back in third. What are you laughing at, Pete?
Speaker 15Nothing. It was just, that summed up the day, wasn't it? Chloe has a part. He's done absolutely nothing wrong there. But he needed to be away from the inside during Barrier 3. Obviously, Hurricane Harley was in the three-wide line. Snow God, not for the first time, was just relentlessly back to late and was half a, well, I think, slow out by about one length. So he'd gone to a horrible position in run and in the end, it just suited the horse that was back and wide in Willie Pike. I mean, that's just... He's prototyped for him, isn't it? Just keeping momentum. So I thought the first two, you know, Champagne Crusader, as I said, going absolutely great guns. But it doesn't necessarily help me when I'm on an average price of 20 and Willie Pike nails me in the last. But you mentioned Heidegwai. Fascinating market support for this horse. I mean, obviously, the horse, the mare, can't knock what she did. She won first up. The fighter drift, which was over 1,000 metres, off a really good trial, but it had been spaced. So there was obviously a little setback there in between trials. Now, suddenly... First time, 1,200 metres against far better opposition. She's rocked firm in the market late. Way too good for the market there for me. Just, I could not have envisaged her starting. You know, she was about $6, $7 or so on the exchange, about 30 minutes out. She's jumped $4.33. It's just, the market has absolutely nailed that horse. And again, not for the first time, a race where you're doing the speed map and going, well, there's so much tempo in this race. And they've run a very slow tempo. They've just found their position so quickly. so easily. that they've just gone along at whatever leisurely pace they feel like. So, look, Rissol, she's on track. I assume she'll be going to the Kalgoorlie Golden Saddle or something like that over the next few weeks. So she's absolutely on track for that performance. Haida Gwaii cannot go any better, and she's just added a little strength to her by running out of 1,200, albeit a very slow one. But, yeah, for the rest of the meeting, G, I'm not exactly sure where to point you and what direction. You know, it's just one of those days. I mean, we had Boy Crush in race one that, you know, went from a best-of-the-day win first up to regressing exactly 13 lengths second up. And so, like, a huge regression. So maybe a little bit flat off that first-up win, but that was a legitimate best-of-the-day performance against all the other horses on the day and now just couldn't even get out of its own way there on Saturday. So it's tough doing the form sometimes, isn't it, when you've got the two 10-year-olds? Yeah.
Speaker 2No, I was just saying that you've been seeing them well, but sometimes you've done everything right, I reckon, when you analyse your performance. But you still need a little bit of luck to get the result that everybody wants.
Speaker 15Yeah, I mean, we could talk about the psychology of punting on another day, but you have to actually become accustomed to losing in this game. If you go into any race meeting expecting that you're going to get more things right than you get wrong, well, you're going to get shown up and you're going to lose very quickly. So that's just the way that the game is. You have to be wrong more times than you're right and you only learn from your mistakes. And if you're not doing both of those things, you're not going to improve as a punter. So, yeah, it is what it is. But we do the review and that's the best part of Monday and Tuesdays. You get to just forget about the replays as such and the actual result and you just go through and go, right, who's going to improve next time out?
Speaker 2Now this, Pete, you know how on the means test with Adam Simpson and Gerard Whateley, they do their rankings from their football teams in the AFL. I reckon if you did your training rankings in WA at the moment and you do your, like, I think it's their top four, is it? I think, yeah, they're top four. I think Pateman would have to be in that conversation. I think Grant and Alana Williams. Miller's had a wonderful week. He did have a quiet period before that. And the Gangeemies are on fire at the moment.
Speaker 15Are you leaving out Mickey Grantham, are you?
Speaker 2Mickey Grantham, of course. So there you go. He'd have to be in your thinking as well for your rankings. And the Katie Knight won easily. And what did it SP in the end of Katie Knight 220. So there you go. There's some stables that are in good form. Winchell Pateman, he's a bit like the Gavin Bedge. Is that a good analogy of WA racing?
Speaker 15Yeah, I think so. Being able to get some of those horses from other stables and just take their time and obviously improve them. But Mitch, he's also got a lot of juvenile horses coming through. And I guess it's surprising how quickly he's been able to build his base and his stable numbers. He really feels like he's, you know, one of those trainers who's got a lot of runners suddenly. And they just keep appearing at the trials and running on debut. And, yeah, you have to just... Obviously, he kept going through the form. But that training performance at Sowell was very impressive on the weekend, obviously.
Speaker 2So, Delius, Pete, there's a few questions coming through. What did you make of him in the yard?
Speaker 15He was fantastic. Probably two races beforehand. They got him out of the stables. We'll walk him around. He was really good in terms of his attitude. He got sort of a bit stallion-y, shall we say, trying to assert his dominance there. And then as they got into the mounting yard proper, he got really sweaty. His attitude went out the door. And to be honest, he really basically ran his race to a certain degree before the race. Having said that, G, if you actually look at the numbers he ran there on Saturday, it's almost identical to his winning performance winning the Turnbull last year. So, I actually think it's a bit of a hidden run. And it will go unnoticed. We'll wait and see where he goes next time out and if we can get a price. But he only had improvement to come physically. That's for sure.

Speaker 2Can we have a round of applause for Chris? Like he's a star of the show. But you made some great progress. You made some money for tags on the weekend. Oh, yeah, that's right. You got your multi up. And he was so happy because even though he says, you stink, Chris, so from time to time, even though he's probably your harshest critic, he's loyal. Like every time on the odds couple, he doesn't concentrate because he's putting on your multi. He's either loyal or silly. Yes, yes. That's a very good point you make.
Speaker 16And on Saturday, he was loyal and he was real. That was a good result. Good to get those. And look, a lot of them were for the place. Three of them were for the place. And this time of the year, we've got some pretty competitive racing. There's no stars going around. So that's probably the best way to go this time of the year when we have these sorts of meetings. But yeah, good result. Hopefully we can keep it going.
Speaker 2Horses to follow.
Speaker 16I'll tell you one jockey to follow, Bella Youngbridge. She keeps riding winner after winner. She's a star. She's leading the premiership, would you believe? She's in front. She's four winners in front of Ben Thompson. She won the gold. She won the Gold Coast Premiership last season outright as an apprentice. So yeah, she's just flying. She rode another three winners. Tony Gollum trained two. A couple of highlights before I get to horses to follow. Just quickly before that.
Speaker 2So what impresses you most about her? Is it like watching a netball or a football or a basketball? She looks like she's got the X factor about her. She does.
Speaker 16She knows where to put them and she doesn't panic. I mean, you take, for instance, that win on Liver Little, who was a... a $1.85 favourite in race number two. She went, no hesitation, going straight out to last. And you would have thought maybe at the 500 metre mark, you want to get going here, Bella, because you're still last. And you've got to get to the outside of doom and get past all of them. And she did. She won. So, look, she's riding on a crest of a wave confidence-wise. That's good in any sport, as we know. But, yeah, she knows where to place it and she doesn't panic. And she's good. She can ride them from the front. She can get them through the field. So, yeah, I'm sure it'll keep going. She's riding a lot of Tony Gollins, as we know, and that certainly helps also. But, yeah, leading the premiership's amazing. So, yeah, Graham won six straight. Liver Little, as I said in that second race, he'll go towards the Toowoomba Cup, which is a standalone meeting in a couple of weeks' time. Horses to follow. Race number four, Yet He Moves, for Chris Waller and Jake Bayliss. Just gave them a bit of a start, but I love the sectionals home through the field. There's a win close, I would think, for Yet He Moves. That's one from there. Race number six was a good race. It was one of the best races I've ever had. It was won by Just Precious at a bit of a price for Stuart Kendrick. But there was a couple of good runs there. Cinder C first up had to work for the first 400 metres of the race. Found the front, was a sitting shot. So I think did a good job to hold on and run third. And Speedtacular looks really close now. Two runs back from a break. Placed second on each occasion. So stick with those two. And one out of race nine was a three-year-old race. Rob Heathcote's got one here called Huggy. It was the only maiden in the field, Huggy. He ran second on the baby. What she did behind Maria Clara recently. She was good. She got a long way back. She came wide and she ran on very strongly. The winner got the gaps through and was able to sprint. Huggy had to do it the hard way and did a really good job. So we'll stick with Huggy. She will not be a maiden for much longer.
Speaker 2And I think in Sydney that you're like we're following Chris so out wide.
Speaker 16I haven't gone through the Sydney meeting as yet. I'll be doing that today. But off the top of my head, St. Gothard I thought was pretty good. But there will be others, I'm sure.

Speaker 2What did you make of the feature race there in South Australia on the weekend? You were close with Sydney's Ascent. Sirnau winning the Wiley Handicap. Your thoughts on that race there on Saturday?
Speaker 17Yeah, ever the professional Sirnau. Yeah. You know, always puts himself in the right spot, mate. And always is a tough horse to run down. Full credit to the winner. Yeah, we got close there with Signature Ascent. Had every chance.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 17But, you know, still double figure odds. It was a good each-way play. Now, looking through the Wiley there, Gareth, the run of Smooth Chino now, 62 kilos, found some early trouble, hit the line really hard under that big weight. You know, I'll quote my model here. It tells me it's an... It's an elite follow. So, Smooth Chino was the run of the race. Also, I forgive to watch me win never on the track. What else came out of that recommendation pulled up late, Gareth?
Speaker 2Would you go to a Manicato with Smooth Chino after what you saw there on Saturday? Is he good enough to meet horses like Jimmy Starr at the top of the market, Bay of Wacker, Live Another Day, Mike Gladiol, all those type of horses?
Speaker 17Absolutely. What sort of weight would you get there?
Speaker 2No, it's weight. Fries, white frights, the manicata. Yep.
Speaker 17yeah but i mean at the moment i think it's fair to say we we there's not that many like elite sprinters um so i i think like horses like this coming over from wa um they they will invariably fly under the radar and if it was mine it would definitely be there you could gareth yeah we might
Speaker 2try and see it we'll get it we'll might get on to indy to see what she's doing with um smooth because i agree with you i thought he was excellent under the circumstances and he is not in the market we bet 365 for the manicato so i'd love to see him in a race like

Speaker 17got quite a few here but um mate we have to mention the winner in race two um again gordon richards and damian loyal they've got another one here bar guest as the horse it's it's only had the two starts uh really impressive two wins the way it put that field away by over four lengths uh again this is a horse that my model is telling me is already up to three-year-old lister company um it would not surprise me if this was if this horse was a pretty baby's traveling companion over the next few weeks in melbourne okay uh i would not be underestimating this horse it's really it's a good story because you know obviously on debut two starts ago went around fifty dollars so um i it's obviously been a bit of a surprise to the stable i'd say gareth but bar guest i this horse has got a real future beautiful so that's uh b-a-r-g-h-e-s-t in the second race what else have you got uh where do we go here we can go to okay let's go to race four now the winner philip promise we we actually mentioned this is a future black hooker hooker um a couple of starts ago and uh no i didn't back it uh but it was the run was full of merit it crossed from that really wide draw uh it's sectionals it was still strong through the line it was it's well above 64 grade now however the black book had to come out of the race is golden cloud now this is a major follow um it did get well back uh it's it's first up run was good as well so i think this horse uh stepping up to 1200 meters i think it's going to be a good one i think it's going to be a good one i think it's going to be a good one it's a it's a definite black booker golden cloud um mate we could go uh what we race five navy rock was the winner wasn't entitled to win um but it the way it got the job done came from well back very long wide run uh it can win again mrs pennycracker in that race is also a follow uh has now had the three runs back did win fourth up last prep so i think she's ready to follow and uh what have we got else um okay race eight we've got to mention longer route mate now this horse has been a victim of wet tracks clearly hasn't been suited now this horse got well back uh 60 kilos came with a very long wide no cover run got within 0.3 of the uh the winner at the end mate the run was huge obviously firmer going but this is also a horse that can also settle a lot closer to its races so

Of course, he is the brother of Chris Shaler, who trains in Queensland, so the family have been involved in racing for a really long time, so a nice result for him. A galloper who raced at stakes level as a two-year-old and returned at three. I think the easing in the ground really helped him. He was the horse that was going to get through the wet track conditions and he is the horse that bounces the barrier and puts himself right there, so he sat outside the leader and he showed an initial kick and then probably come to the end of his run. They were sort of coming at him late, but he managed to hold on. Nice effort by the runner-up in Pinafore over Lisa Ladder's stable. She flew home, had the best closing sectionals, but a good return. Waikato Stud put a lot into racing in New Zealand, so it's always nice to see their colours salute particularly at stakes level.
Speaker 2Good result too for the Diddums with War Princess bouncing back there in that open sprint race.
Speaker 19She's been a real flag bearer for the stable, particularly since Trent has joined his father in a training partnership. She did a tremendous job last preparation. They extended her out to the mile and she finished it in behind well-written of course, and both the Karaka three-year-old and the NZB Kiwi. They extended her to CF. It would sort of open up some more doors for her. I think probably answered the question that she is just a bit of a front-running sprinting type of mare and that's exactly what she did on Saturday. Straight to the front, run them along and continued to kick clear. She actually won really impressively in the finish and what I thought was a pretty strong open field there on Saturday. It bodes well for her going forward this preparation. She's won 6 of 12 so she is a real winner and I think when she's placed right, she delivers.
Speaker 2What could be a lovely race for her, Jane, then?
Speaker 19It would be interesting to see what they want to do with her and whether they think that she can get out to or get to that sort of top echelon. Unfortunately, in New Zealand, right at this time of year, there isn't a lot of options. When you've got a sprinting mare. I haven't spoken to DIDS. I don't know if they'd look further afield and look for a race over here. It's sort of listed or group three or whether they might just run her in a couple of maybe listed races over the next little while and follow that progression through the Hawke's Bay Spring Carnival then give her a fresh in and look at races like the Railway. She's had a look at Ellerslie a couple of times and perhaps the Telegraph. It's probably not going to be until the summertime that we really see her at that elite level, perhaps in New Zealand, if that's the
Speaker 2way they're going to look. And the sweetest thing did enough in the Canterbury Bell Stakes there for the Tiago Racing.
Speaker 19Yes, she did. It was a tough win in the end. The three of them went across the line together, pulled away from the remainder of the field. So sort of first, second and third were quite dominant. And look, I just think it's a nice story. She wasn't purchased for very much money. $80,000 by Chris Rutten and Roy D. Burgesson, who have got, Chris Rutten in particular, has got a phenomenal record. He's got a record at picking up horses for not a lot of money. They're early runners. He regularly has had horses competitive in a Caraca Millena in New Zealand and he often turns them over. And that's what they've done with this filly. She was really good in behind seeds at the moment at Group 1 level and the Manawatu size projects stakes at the end of last preparation. This was her first run back. She's had a change of ownership in between times. Actually purchased by Glen Tree Racing. So an Australian-based owner is now racing her out of the Tiakao barn. So Roy D. Burgesson has sort of handed her over to his son Sam and he managed to get the win with her first up. But she's a daughter of Hello You Zane, who had a good weekend as well. He signed another stakes winner in Australia. And of course Cambridge Stud, who Stan Hello You Zane also had Woolworth and win the run to the race in Sydney as well. And he's by Sword of State. So they're
Speaker 2both really good. And they've had a really good couple of weeks. Cambridge Stud. So Henry Plum Tree and the team would be over the moon, I would imagine, Jane. And we appreciate you coming on this show as always. We'll catch up with you again later on the week. But yep, I'm looking forward to the next six weeks or so. In fact, it does really start to heat up in New Zealand as well. And it goes right throughout to basically throughout the year, really, because you've got the summer carnival there in New Zealand.
Speaker 19Yeah, we do. So obviously Hawke's Bay is the focus over the next few weeks with the Howden Mile coming up at Group 1 level. And then you've got the 2040 metre race two weeks later at Group 1 level. So that's always a really exciting time as these horses sort of begin their spring. But yeah, look, we race right over the Christmas New Year period at Group 1 level in New Zealand. So it doesn't stop. I know in Australia you get that little bit of a lull around Christmas time. It's a little bit quiet, but not in the New Zealand. They go right the way through.
Speaker 2We just don't stop these days basically all year round. I think July is probably the only real quiet month for Australasian racing, but there's something happening most months, which is great. Keeps us occupied. Hey, Jane, thanks for your time as always. Speaker 20Oh, look, the obvious obviously she's alibi, but look, can I have a low light? Yeah. High-fiving my mates at about the 150 Yvonne Display's race. I did give a tip out when I was at the local footy and Pondoleo, he came from the clouds and knocked us off. So that was the low light. Was it a big run on display? It was. Look, three wide, no cover the trip. She gave a great kick, but obviously wasn't good enough. Wasn't her day. No.
