Speaker 2Yes, good morning. This is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall on this Thursday. It's the 1st of October. It's a big hello to you listening on your local SEN track at RSN 927 dials. Wherever you may be listening on the SEN and RSN apps. Of course, if you're listening to us a little later on on the podcast, it's a big hello to you and also to our viewers on racing.com. It's a big Thursday show, as you would expect ahead of this weekend's racing. We've got the Turnbull Stakes meeting at Flemington. It's moving day. We're on weather watch. How much rain will Flemington cop over the next couple of days? If the rain that is predicted does arrive, we're expected to be on a heavy track. I think there at Flemington on Saturday. There's also a little bit of rain around in Sydney. So who knows what the track conditions will be there at Randwick. But as we've learned in the past, we can have our thoughts and look at the weather bureau and try and analyse how much rain will come on a Thursday. But as I said before, we have learned a few lessons that a lot can happen in 48 hours when it comes to the weather. So we'll try our best to try and find you a few winners and identify the horses that might handle the ground come Saturday. With a massive giddy-up stable mail to kick off proceedings. So Danny O'Brien will join us, Graham Biggs, Sam Friedman. We'll have a chat to JD Hayes, Lloyd Kennerwell, Jack Turnbull, Adrian Bott as well. So that is a massive line-up. David Gately will join me just after 9.30 for Gator's game plan. So he's ready to go. We'll go for a good hour there. And you know the drill with Gator. We go through some key categories to kick off our meeting with him. To try and help us set the platform. The form for our punting plan comes Saturday. Then it's up to you, the selectors, to ask the coach Gator a question. And you can ask that question on the Garrett's Horse and Hound text line on 0499 736 736. We'll find you some winners today with bag of tips. And then we've got the Thursday form lounge as we go around the country trying to find you a few winners. With our experts at those Metro meetings outside of Sydney and Melbourne come Saturday. Giddy-up always brought to you by Bet365. It's never ordinary when it's brought to you. By Bet365, what's gambling really costing you? For free and confidential support, visit gamblinghelponline.org.au. And as I said, 0499 736 736 to send your text message on the Garrett's Horse and Hound text line. Two minutes past eight, let's get stuck into our Thursday show.
Speaker 1Now on Giddy-up, it's time for Stable Mail.
Speaker 2Always great to catch up with Danny O'Brien. I just did a spot on Gary Lyon and Tim Watson's show there. Who? Just about 20 minutes ago. And I said, Danny O'Brien's coming on Giddy-up to kick off proceedings. And Gary reminded me to tell him that he's the second best sporting icon to come out of Kyburn. But I would disagree with him. Danny O'Brien, I reckon you're in front of him now. Once you win a Melbourne Cup, you're in front of the Melbourne Footy Club superstar, as I say hello to you.
Speaker 3Yeah, we often have that rep. They've only had one street parade for a previous Kyburn identity. And that was for Melbourne. I was going to tell you when I brought the Melbourne Cup back there.
Speaker 2Yeah, I should have reminded him that, but I will next week.
Speaker 3We're very good friends with the Lyon family. My mum and Gary's mum are very close. Very good people.
Speaker 2Sensational, mate. Are you wanting the rain or not wanting the rain?
Speaker 3Look, I think on the balance, we wouldn't mind it. Gold Coast Bell's obviously very effective on it. Autumn and Grinzing's run well on it. Lip Steel's capable on it. So it wouldn't worry me if we did get the rain.
Speaker 2Yeah. We'll start off with. Lip Steel, because this is a race that if you win, you're into a Melbourne Cup. The Lexus Bark Cummings over the 2,520 metres. I reckon the key to her is the 54 kilos. Would you agree there?
Speaker 3Yeah, I think you're right. Yeah, we obviously focused on the Archer and the Bark Cummings, giving ourselves a couple of chances. Now, you know, from acceptance time onwards, the Archer didn't go our way. When those top weights didn't accept in the Archer, and all of a sudden she's got the 58 and a half. It set that race up for being a far more complicated event. And then the way that race panned up from a speed perspective with her sitting up front on a really hot speed, left her vulnerable with the big weight. So I thought her run was really solid. And we get a much better set up this weekend with her on the minimum. And, you know, I don't think we'll get a replay of the way it was run in the Archer.
Speaker 2No. So how do you ride her from that gate there on Saturday?
Speaker 3Oh, look, she's naturally going to be handy. Yeah. She just has that ability to begin, and we don't take that away from her. So I expect her to be in the first three or four. She's been effective there. She ran second to Whiskey on a Hill, who's a very good wood tracker back in the autumn in the Roy Higgins, and she got through it well that day. So, no, no, she gets there, you know, with every opportunity to hopefully win her way into a Melbourne Cup.
Speaker 2How do you approach trading these days? Because as you point out, there's been a couple of opportunities to win a race to get into a Melbourne Cup. Trying to get them to peak when it matters most, but also saving a little bit of petrol in the tank in case you do get to that first Tuesday in November.
Speaker 3Yeah, look, they're all very different individuals. Now, she's half-sister to Vounder Clare, but a very different horse. You know, she's probably about 420 kilos. He was 520 kilos, a big hulking gelding. But ironically enough, he didn't have the capacity to race as often as she does. She's very, very tough. So, you know, he went into a Melbourne Cup with two runs. He ran in the Turnbull and the Caulfield Cup, whereas we'll certainly, if she does get there, she'll have had five or six. And I think that's the right way to prepare her because she bounces out of her runs really well and only improves out of them.
Speaker 2Yeah, Affle was the favourite at the moment, but Matty Smith telling us that if there's too much rain, they probably won't come to Melbourne. So, it's unlikely that he does come to Melbourne, the favourite there at the moment for the Bark Cummings, and he'll stay in Sydney for the Metrop. So, Matty Smith on weather. Watch and you'll have a decision, I think, later this afternoon regarding the favourite for the Bark Cummings and Athelwulf. Gold Coast Bell, it was sometimes like, when you looked on paper the other day at Flemington, it was just too good to be true in a way. It just looked the perfect map for her. But as we've seen so many times in racing, that those maps and the expected tempo, you can get it completely wrong, Danny.
Speaker 3Yeah, and she was probably her own worst enemy by being half a length slow and I guess if we'd had our time again, probably you'd ride her a bit quieter when she's slow away like that from a wide gate. But having said that, I didn't, I thought she was entitled to hang on a bit better. Once she got there, she got some cheap enough sectionals and I thought her run was just fair. Now, whether that was second up, she's certainly been well since and she hopefully gets a much better run on a soft circuit to really bounce back hard. And she went around even money in that race and she only needs to reproduce her first up run to be very hard to beat there on Saturday.
Speaker 2Yeah, all right then. So that's a good push for Gold Coast Bell. What did you make of Autumn and Grinsing at Ballarat the other day?
Speaker 3No, it was almost a replay of Gold Coast Bell coming off a very strong first up win. If anything, we probably again rode her a bit too close. But she was in season that day. That's the only thing I can sort of, put up as an excuse because she's a filly that we were, you know, we're still optimistic that she gets to the deep end of the spring for a wakeful and an oaks. And this has always been a race that we use for our three-year-old fillies that we won it last year with getting a good feeling. I think Miami Bound ran third in this race on her way to an oaks. It's generally a spring defining race for these nice autumn, sorry, spring staying fillies. And yeah, we're going there really happy with her tomorrow. We've got the good draw. She can be ridden a bit softer and still not get too far off them. But, you know, we're hoping that she can announce herself as a filly for Melbourne Cup week.
Speaker 2I think everyone's excited to see what True Rebel can do. He comes out of that really good Bendigo maiden and then franked that form with a victory there the other day. He goes to a superimposed over the 1800 meters at headquarters. Your expectations with him?
Speaker 3Yeah, look, as you said, he's lightly raced, he's two runs have been good. He's a laid back, big sort of gelding that looks like he'll get to 2000 meters, maybe further. It's a good progression for him to get his chance at his home track to see where he might get to later in the spring. So no excuses. The horse has done well since Geelong and we're expecting him to run well.
Speaker 2Heavy track with him or is it just unknown?
Speaker 3Well, I think if it got really, really wet, I'd probably bring him, keep him at home and wait for maybe Caulfield because he's just, again, he's not a horse that strikes you as being a heavy tracker. Like he's just, there's too much of him. The more substantial horses, weight wise, I find it just that bit harder for them to drag themselves through the real soft ground.
Speaker 2All right then, mate. If I gave you $100, what would you do with it this weekend?
Speaker 3Let me think hard about this. I haven't given you punters too much of a good steal the last couple of times.
Speaker 2You've been in pretty good form before that.
Speaker 3Yeah, I probably think that on a wet track, Gold Coast Bell could bounce back really hard and particularly if they're going to bet $4 or $5 and that's probably a good bet
Speaker 2That'll do us nicely and the Rose of Kingston Stakes, Gold Coast Bell with M. Zara is in red hot form at the moment, he always seems to get into the groove at this time of the year when the big money races arrive so that'll do us Gold Coast Bell race 5 number 7 The pride of Kyberum, it's great to have you on the show once again Danny and good luck this week at Flemington
Speaker 3Thanks very much Gav
Speaker 2There's Danny O'Brien, 10 minutes past 8 we'll take a break, Graeme Bigg will be next here on Giddy Up Staple Mail this Thursday Join the conversation
Speaker 1Text us on 0499 736 736 Live across Australia This is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall
Speaker 2Welcome back to Giddy Up, Graeme Bigg's got a wonderful team engaged there at Flemington on Saturday but I reckon he was up and about after watching Arouse do what she did there on Daboo at Ballarat to kick off that meeting and he joins us now, the champion trainer. Hello to you Graeme Yeah, good morning. That was a win of a really good horse on Daboo there Arouse yesterday
Speaker 4Yeah, you'd like, she showed nice ability at the jump outs and trials and things over the last few months, I'd just like to see them do it on race day obviously she got the job done yesterday, I really like the way she lowered the last sort of 200 and stretched her neck out and found the line with a little riding.
Speaker 2Yeah, what have you got in mind for her down the track this spring?
Speaker 4Ah, we'll just let the dust settle, we won't
Speaker 2One race at a time. Too lofty ambitions just yet, we'll just let everything settle down and take a deep breath It's a million dollar thoroughbred stakes race for three year old fillies at the back end of the spring. Is that right? It's over 1200 metres too Yes, yes, on your biggie. Anyway, let's go and have a look at Flemington on Saturday. What horses do you want and what horses don't you what horses don't want the rain come Saturday with your team? Right, the ones that don't want the rain
Speaker 4would be probably she's a hustler, doesn't want it too heavy she gets you soft okay, King's F is not great in that sort of ground Profligate, okay slow so yeah, so bit of a mixed bag there, but a couple of the others you know, have got nice credentials on soft to heavy ground, Roscoe Romer and amenable so they seem to get through it
Speaker 2okay. Can Roscoe Romer run a race then second up in the second race there? He certainly will, he just
Speaker 4put a line through the first up race it was just a farcical run race and you know, she come out a little bit sticky and got back behind him in a walk race, but her sections were very, very good finding the line so just forget about the run first up and mind you, she hadn't raced since last November, so the run sort of tidied her up a bit and it was a first go up the straight, so look, she certainly can turn her form around.
Speaker 2Alright then Profligate, what did you make of her effort as favourite there the other day?
Speaker 4Thought she ran very well, obviously the braille was out on that day it was out 11 metres, it was well documented hard to make up ground, they backed it off mid-race, the leaders and they were the first two across the line so she got back and she found the line really well I'm pretty confident that she's going to be very well suited at Flemington on the big stretches and getting to the
Speaker 2mile. Yeah, it looks a better set up at Flemington over a mile for her, but if it becomes a heavy track, do you get concerned then?
Speaker 4Ah, look, you know what it was pretty soft the day she raced at Sandown first up, so she seemed to have worked the line pretty good there, so we're at the premier track, so I can't see any reason why it'll be
Speaker 2that bad, you know? Alright, then I think it's the key to this meeting as well as how much rain they have on race day, so we'll just cross our fingers and toes Silicap goes around in the mayor's race, of course over the 1400 metres she's first up
Speaker 4She's first up, she had she's had three trials and jump outs now, she jumped out last Monday, she does like soft ground, drawn a pretty awful gate, but still in all she will handle the ground and she certainly can run well, she's a three times stakes winner, so she's not out of her depth
Speaker 2there. So she can win first up? She's fit enough.
Speaker 4She can run very well, she's big odds so she can, you know, each way hope
Speaker 2for sure. That'll do us, and then she's a hustler it was an eye catcher first up she's been well backed after that for a Caulfield Cup, what do you want to see from her come Saturday?
Speaker 4Well, something similar, you know obviously we're just going to ride her where she's nice and comfortable and, you know, find the line obviously up to 2000 metres you know, it doesn't look to be a lot of speed in the race, probably you know, looks like the Sidelius will probably take control you know, looks like the Sidelius will probably take control and, you know dominate the race from up front but she'll be hitting the line well but she's going particularly well at this stage and certainly come on for the first up run
Speaker 2Yeah, it looks one of those races where you're going to see these days, you're still progressing to their grand finals get back off a slow tempo because it looks like there's a lot of infantrymen who depending on if he's ready to go or not, if he's ready to go, they'll put pace in that race in Sidelius, but apart from that, it doesn't look like there's too much speed and the Turnbull this year
Speaker 4No, it's a bit pedestrian, but look, it's only two weeks of the Caulfield Cup from Saturday, so they've got to start putting their hands up and figuring in the placings
Speaker 2What about in the Gilguy Stakes to Bergerac and the punter's pal, King Zephyr, how's he
Speaker 4come back? King Zephyr's in good shape, he had a preparation up in Queensland, things didn't quite go right, he's one look, if it's soft, it's okay, but if it got in the heavy range probably would pull him up a bit but to Bergerac, he seems to be all types of going and he relishes the straight
Speaker 2Alright then, so that's a good push there for to Bergerac maybe put him in our quaddies in race 9 and then Amenable was very good for your stable first up, he has performed nicely on heavy tracks before without winning, how's he trained on?
Speaker 4Yeah, he's come on beautifully like he hadn't raced for some months and so it was good to get him back to the races in competition and he found the line well, it was a very, very strong race, well strongly run race that race at Sandown the leaders sort of really clapped it on, so it was a bit of a survival of the fittest, but he ran very well and he's had a nice break between runs, so he's had a little bit of downtime on the water treadmill and then brought him back in the stables and his work's been really, really good and he looks
Speaker 2in good shape. So that's a good push for Amenable in the last race there, so on Saturday, if I gave you $100 what would you do with it Graeme? We're going to put it on Proflagate Yeah, Proflagate in the Manifold Stakes, race four, horse three, any winners at Cranbourne there Friday night?
Speaker 4Well, that'll be determining the weather, how we shape up there but look, both horses are going very well headbanger, put a line for a first up run, she sort of came out of the gates a bit screw with and sort of slipped on jumping, so she can certainly put herself back in the frame I'd prefer her on top of the ground but Castellito's been going very well and she's drawn to get a good
Speaker 2run. Good on you B, thanks for joining us on Giddy Up as always mate. Cheers now. There we go, there is Graeme Big Sam Friedman joins us here on Giddy Up to continue on Giddy Up Stable Mail. Hello to you Sam. Morning Gareth. I think a few people were keen to see Semantics take on a rouse there yesterday at Ballarat but she was a late scratching, is she okay?
Speaker 5Yeah, she's fine, she's actually about to do a bit of work here at Pinecliffe so she just had a little I think she caught herself just coming off the truck and just had a little bit of blood on her heel which is 100% this morning so you might see her on Sunday, she's a very good filly so we'd like to have been lining up yesterday, she's going to have a very bright future.
Speaker 2Yeah, alright then, that's, looking forward to seeing her at the races shortly you've got some strong chances right across the country on a Saturday, you'll feature at Flemington and Randwick, we'll start off at Flemington, the Belmont Gangster and Cabrioli both horses in the market, in fact first and second favourite, can you split these
Speaker 5two? Look, I think a bit of a watch and see with the Belmont Gangster he trialled very well last week he's coming in off just the one jump out but very clean winded horse and had some good form last prep, obviously Ten Commandments has really gone on which bodes well for him, I'm actually starting to wonder whether he is sort of more of a short course horse, you know more so than all sort of really stretch out in trips, so it's a bit of a watch and see to see how he hits the line I'd say he'll be back in the field and working through them, he'll love soft ground so that won't bother him, Cabriol nice win at Corford I just thought the ground was probably a bit firm for him there we nearly pulled him out, so he's another one that loves soft ground you know 1,000 to 1,200 shouldn't be an issue and he's probably one that puts himself up on the speed and he's had to run this prep so I'd probably lean towards Cabriol but I think the other horse will be closing off very well.
Speaker 2I reckon if my memory can recall me right that Annie Mack have said that we should have something on a Bayer maybe for an Oaks this is her third start, she's still a maiden, she goes around in a manifold stake, she's $71 with bet $3.65 your expectations with her on Saturday? Yeah
Speaker 5look to be frank she's not been the easiest to sort of get a guide on, she works quite well at home and she's - Yeah, I've seen her do some nice gallops probably hasn't quite put it together. Put the crossover in tongue-tie on her, which she's actually carrying herself a lot better with that on. She's been quite raw and quite green. She raced a little fresh the other day up to the 1700. Look, she's a big price. I do think she'll stay a trip, no problem. So, you know, I'd rather see her ridden a little more conservatively on Saturday. So, you know, just watch her hitting the line and hopefully, you know, we're trying to build towards an Oaks, but, you know, there's plenty in the same boat and there's a very fine line between an Oaks and a Jericho. So, yeah, we'll see where we fit in.
Speaker 2Looking forward to the Dane Hill. This is nearly the race of the day for mine.
Speaker 5Overexcited? Yeah, she's very good. She was a bit green the other day when she hit the front and probably, you know, the winner just had the drop on us and was a little. You know, had a bit more race craft and sort of went past her and she's actually responding again on the line. So, look, second start in a race. She's only had her first ever trial of this preparation. So, she's taking some big steps forward. I think she's improved plenty again. And, yeah, I think the fillies are probably, well, I don't know. My view is the fillies are probably right up there with the Colts this year. So, thoughts of Tono Glo was excellent. In that race. And, yeah, I wouldn't swap her for anything there. I think she's pretty good.
Speaker 2What about Zimbali's?
Speaker 5Yeah, Zimbali's. Look, again, the question is whether to go out and trip with him or to come back and trip. I keep watching back on his Blue Diamond run and, you know, coiled up over a sprint trip. He actually sprints quite well. I think we've. Well, I think I've probably pulled the wrong. I mean, with him so far this prep, he's been ridden positively and obviously over the 1,300. And he just hasn't looked strong late, to be frank. You know, he fell in the other day. He was a strong maiden. But just my thinking is he's possibly more of a sprinter. He's a half-brother to Tempted. So, yeah, I want to see him ridden quietly. And, look, he's a big prize, but he'll close off well. And, yeah, just trying to keep him for sprint trips. I just. And even last prep as a two-year-old, I didn't think he was savaging the line at 14 and a mile. He wasn't screaming further. So that was the reason for coming back and trip.
Speaker 2Just back to the filly. She'll handle the heavy track. She's out of a Stitzel mare and by Sue Star, of course.
Speaker 5Not a problem. She'll love it.
Speaker 2All right. Then Inca Runa goes around the Gilguy stakes.
Speaker 5Yeah, she's probably one that may not want it heavy. It's a good run the other day. She gets the blinkers back on. She obviously won the thoroughbred club last year. With the blinkers. So she can run well, but we'll just keep it on the track. There's the option to wait and go to the Scolacci next week at Caulfield. So we'll just wait and see what that track is.
Speaker 2In Sydney, you've got a couple of the price punch lane goes around in the fifth race over the 1600 meters.
Speaker 5Yeah, needs it wet. So there's a little bit of rain for Saturday, but he'd need that to fall. If it comes, the horse is going well. We're just. You know, he's getting older and we don't want to be lining him up on ground that he just doesn't seem to let go on. So got to be a little selective with where he lines up. So again, Saturday, we'll need to hope for a bit of rain. If he gets that, you know, he'll he'll run well.
Speaker 2Tommy Kitten, he steps up and trip and drops in weight for this Epsom handicap. Your thoughts about him?
Speaker 5Look, pretty glad to be getting into the mile. He's drawn well. Yeah, Hieronymus knows him really well. It's obviously. He won the spring champion on him as a three year old. Yeah, look, he's going well, the horse. I know people probably get bored of hearing that, but I do think he's he's tracking well. He's run the other day again was was good. I mean, he's just looking for the mile. He's actually Mark came in, sort of struggling to pull him up. He was he was just getting into his work. So he's been crying out for the mile now. And. Yeah, obviously, he's got a bit of weight, but, you know, I think he's in what's a very good. Good handicap. He's not without a chance. I think he can get a run where he can settle closer and possibly, you know, be midfield, something like that. Obviously, we saw in an all star mile, he was able to settle a lot closer. And I think hopefully from the gate, we're able to do that on Saturday.
Speaker 2Yeah. And there's no tempted for Beska in the last race there over the twelve hundred meters on Saturday.
Speaker 5Yeah, well, she left him well behind at the three hundred meter mark. But he he stuck on pretty well, actually. And he's yeah, he's probably found a really suitable race jockey on board. He'll make his own luck. And he's he's going well for a race like this for sure.
Speaker 2Any winners on a Friday night for a Sam? Well, I guess it just depends on the weather track.
Speaker 5Yeah. Yeah, I wouldn't feel super confident. I think the fire is coming out of a strong maiden. She ran well and third to Kieran. I see that on the stakes race on Sunday. So I don't know what price she is, but she she'd be a good chance.
Speaker 2All right. Then if I gave you a hundred dollars this weekend, what would you do with it?
Speaker 5Yeah, it's a good question. I'd go straight out overexcited.
Speaker 2So that's right. Six horse eleven in the day and he'll stakes at Flemington. So there you go. Love it. Good on you, mate. Thanks for that. Good luck this weekend. Thanks. There's Sam Freeman there. I'll send me there. Have I lost him? He's gone. Can you just give him a quick ring back? I'm going to ask you one question because there's a horse that everybody's got is asked me about today. He might not answer, but call me coach is the horse that everybody wants to know about because he won nicely there the other day at Cranbourne on a Friday night. He was impressive at that provincial track there in New South Wales and he's well in the markets there for a cool field getting to be lost him. I'll make sure I find out how. What are his thoughts on call me coach? Yeah, I think he's rung back the great man. We'll ask you if I need to get his opinion on this because some people are tipping me tipping me each way. Call me coach to call feel good. He's sorry Sam. Heaps of people ask me to ask you about call me coach. Could he be a major player in a call feel guineas?
Speaker 5Yes, he's a chance to run. So obviously coming out of a very different form line to what the main horses are. But he's pretty good horse. He's going to do a bit of work at Caulfield next Tuesday. He he's taken a while actually to work out Melbourne direction, to be completely frank. He actually went into the track this morning at Mornington and yeah, so we've got a bit to work through with him to make sure he's got the you know, the the brain to handle it. But good horse. Yeah. Yeah. If he lines up, he'll be there to run a big race.
Speaker 2Appreciate your time as always. I promise you. That is it. Thanks for that, Sammy. Thanks, Dave. Sam Friedman there. We'll take a break. We'll come back and we'll continue on Giddy Up Stable Mail next.
Speaker 1Text us on 0499-736-736 live across Australia.
Speaker 2Welcome back to Giddy Up. This is Giddy Up Stable Mail. Always great to catch up with JD Hayes, Lindsay Parker. Got some nice chances at Flemington on Saturday. Hello to you, JD.
Speaker 6Good morning. Thank you for having me.
Speaker 2Bella Devina goes around in the Mirabinong Troll Stakes over 1,000 metres. What are you expecting from this two-year-old on Daboo?
Speaker 6Look, she's benefited from having a look down the straight. She's improved out of sight since the trial and thinks she'll run a nice competitive race on Saturday. You got a great
Speaker 2record with your two-year-olds, especially early on in the season. How is your group of two-year-olds this time around?
Speaker 6No, we think we've got quite a nice batch and quite a nice few two-year-olds trying this morning at Caulfield. So, looking forward to seeing how they step out.
Speaker 2All right, then. So, could we back Bella Devina or is it just a watch and see?
Speaker 6Look, I reckon she's in each way, I hope. I know Calvin McElroy's quite bullish on his three in the race. They have trialled up nicely. So, I think watch and see at the moment.
Speaker 2All right, then. Esmaili's won on a heavy track before. He was pretty good first up. Can he win? Race two there down the straight over the 1200 metres.
Speaker 6Yeah, I think he's a very good winning hope. He's trained on beautifully. His first up run was good. He's good in their own effective track and ticks a lot of boxes.
Speaker 2Will Portinari get 1600 metres?
Speaker 6We feel like she'll get it quite easy, especially the way that she hit the line last start. She's rock hard fit, deep into a campaign, barrier 15. We're not too worried about it because she is a horse that we like to let play. She's got good balance. Brought her a bit close the other day at Sandown and it sort of backfired. And I think she'll eat up the mile and marks her on board, I think is a big plus.
Speaker 2Stylish. Hasn't had much luck from the gate as well. She goes around, of course, in the Rose of Kingston stakes.
Speaker 6Yeah, she'll be suited by the wet track as well. So she's deep into a campaign and she's very good at the 1400. This is deep placement, but hopefully they get a bit of back and black tight with her.
Speaker 2What about War Machine and also Arkansas Kid in the Guild Race? Will Portinari? guy.
Speaker 6And yes, look there, the War Machine, he's just from the wide barrier. We tried to ride him cold and he resented it. So just forget about his last run in the Rupert Clark. He's a good straight horse. He doesn't like it too wet, but he does like a bit of sting out of the ground. So hopefully we don't get as much rain as predicted. And Arkansas Kid's a very good straight horse and he bounced back last start and will be competitive.
Speaker 2And he loves it wet, doesn't he, Arkansas Kid?
Speaker 6Yeah, he seems to grow a leg in it. So he does have to to beat a horse like Skybird, but look, he gets the conditions to suit.
Speaker 2What's your expectations with Cafe Millennium on a heavy track?
Speaker 6He's better on a good surface, that's sure. But he's a very good Flemington horse, so hopefully it counterbalances and he's able to go two better.
Speaker 2Good opportunity for Jackson Radley in a Group 1 Epsom handicap. Can he win it on Plymouth? Can he cause the upset?
Speaker 6Well, I think. He'll be blowing a lot of people out of the quaddie if he does. Plymouth is building nicely. I'd be hesitant to say he could beat the likes of Wellwritten and Autumn Boy, but you never know. It's a handicap. He gets in a lot of light weight and he is going well as a horse, but I'd say he's on a five diamonds path.
Speaker 2Surely Carbon Arnos, he won't knock us out of the quaddie, will he? In Sydney, he goes around the last race. He brings his best.
Speaker 6He likes to make his form. You'd have to keep him in there as a keep safe, because if he turns up, he can.
Speaker 2Yeah, he's not the worst. He's got a $226 chance because of what you just pointed out. Like, at his best, he would be competitive in this race.
Speaker 6Correct. At his best, he'd be. Yes, he'd be 10 to 1. But he does like to. He has a few committee meetings in his horse, and we're just trying to work out how to get consistency out of him.
Speaker 2Yeah. What about at Cranbourne Friday night? Any winners there? You got some nice chances?
Speaker 6Some nice chances. It's going to be interesting to see with the rain about. But Renaston, we might not. Oh, Resonance, sorry. We might not run from 10, but he's a nice horse to stick with.
Speaker 2All right. Then should we back Legend Beast in that Highway Benchmark 70 today at Warrnambool?
Speaker 6Look, he's definitely going to get the 3,000 metres. Yes. And he's on the quick backup, which is a tick as well. So I think he's a nice each way hope.
Speaker 2If I gave you $100, what would you do with it this weekend, JD? Portanari. Portanari there in the manifold. So race four, number five, with Mark Sarr aboard. How is Mr. Brightside the champ?
Speaker 6Yes, he's having a good, quiet week. Yeah. And we'll be looking for soft track. So I wish we were racing this weekend. It looks like it'd be conditions to suit.
Speaker 2So wherever the rain is, Mr. Brightside will be there.
Speaker 6Yeah, if he could organise the rain, Gary, it'd be great.
Speaker 2I'll see what I can do. And how is the old man's horse, Kang Rising?
Speaker 6Yeah, don't believe anything on Twitter this year. He's perfect. Yes, yes, yes.
Speaker 2So he trials next Tuesday, that's right?
Speaker 6Yes, next Tuesday. And he's travelled over, seriously, in very good order. He's ticked every box. And hopefully it stays that way for a couple of weeks' time.
Speaker 2I'll put in my order for a Kang Rising jacket. Hopefully it's not far away.
Speaker 6Yeah, hopefully they've got it in your size, Gary.
Speaker 2Yeah, that's a good point. I've put on a bit lately. But anyway, hey, JD, always great to catch up with you, mate. And good luck this weekend. There we go. There's JD Hayes. It is 37 minutes past eight. I've got some great news. I've got some great news for you as well. I mentioned this on Gary and Tim's show just before I came on, on 11.16. And Paulie Sebastiani's been on fire. Like, it wouldn't matter how much the beers cost. He'd still be able to afford them after. I think with all of our boost horses this week, you haven't missed, have you, Paulie Sebastiani? There you go. He's on fire.
Speaker 7No, haven't missed one. No. Two from two. Hoping to go three from three today. Six dollars yesterday. Yes, Venetian choice.
Speaker 2Very good. And the money came for that galloping. So, what is the boost horse today?
Speaker 7Well, you're going to laugh. We're going to the 3,100 metre high weight race at Warrnambool. This is unprecedented. Well, it's not really unprecedented territory because last year we made a bet boost horse in a Jericho Cup qualifier. And we got the job done. Race two, number one, Black Peppermint. Will Gordon and Patrick Payne combined.
Speaker 2Hard to beat.
Speaker 7That is our bet 365 bet boost horse for today. Good luck. If you're having a play.
Speaker 2So, Black Peppermint, $2.70. I wonder what we'll get boosted to. Around $3, I reckon. Correct. Big day in Kalgoorlie today. Haddon's Day over in Western Australia. The first of their two-day carnival. And the VRC now. We were meant to have Kylie Rogers on, but she couldn't make it today. But what about this? So, because they've done a deal with Asahi, the VRC, beer this weekend on Saturday will be available for the Turnbull Stakes meeting. So, a schooner of Carlton Draft and Carlton Drive, Carlton Drive, 3.5% will be $9.50 for VRC members and $12.50 for the general public. So, beers this weekend at Caulfield, $9.50. And that's for the members and for the general public, $12.50.
Speaker 7And if you're paying by card, there's no surcharges today.
Speaker 2Unbelievable. So, that is great news. Bargain everywhere. And then they've got the Flemington Fortune, which is. I think this is a great initiative from the VRC. So, race goers get the chance to win a share of $100,000 by correctly tipping every winner on the card. Now, the way you're going, you probably could do it. If no one tips the entire card, the person with the most correct winners who went as earliest will win $10,000. So, basically, if you turn up to Flemington and you play the Flemington Fortune, the earlier you are there, the more chance you have got of taking some of the $10,000 anyway. So, you have to be on course to play that. So, to be eligible, entrants must submit their tips on course before the first race and remain on course until after the last race. So, just repeating, you can go to Flemington on Saturday. You can buy a Carlton Draft, the best beer in town, for $9.50 a schoony if you're a member, $12.50 if you're not a member. And then there's a chance you can walk home with $100 large by tipping the card. It can be done. It is possible.
Speaker 7Pretty good selling point.
Speaker 2Yep. So, there you go.
Speaker 7And then you know what you can do? You can multi all those runners together with Bet365 and you'll maybe collect even more. How's that? Yep. There you go.
Speaker 2Beautiful. Perfect. Good on you, mate. Thank you. Beer's cheap when you go to the races today. You can go to Caulfield and you go to Flemington, you get a schoony under $10.
Speaker 7No surcharge either on the card.
Speaker 2Yeah. So, the MRC, what is it? $8.50, I reckon, for a schoony? About that. Around that anyway. Hey, good on you, Paulie. Thanks, mate. Good luck with the BetBoost today. Yep. No, we wish you the best of luck. Thank you. The pressure is on you once again, but you're just lapping it up. It's 90 minutes to 9 o'clock. We'll take a break. We'll come back and we'll continue on Giddy Up Stable Mail on this Thursday morning. Welcome back to Giddy Up, Gareth Hall with you. This is Giddy Up Stable. Lloyd Kennewill joins us now because he's got his star three-year-old, Mbube, going around in his much-anticipated Danehill Stakes on Saturday. Lloyd, hello to you. Good morning, Gareth. How are you? I am very well, mate. So, Mbube goes around the Danehill Stakes. Is he ready to rock and roll?
Speaker 8Yeah. Look, if you're not ready now, you'll never be ready. No. You've got to have them at their top, ready to go against this quality of horses. It's a super race on paper. You wouldn't be surprised if the winner of the Coolmore in a month's time comes out of this race at all, that's for sure.
Speaker 2You'd love to prove Mark Zahra wrong, I would imagine. Mark's riding a lot for me.
Speaker 8We're going really well. Yeah. It's a good little combo. And I've got a really good backup in Ethan Brown riding a fair few of them at the moment as well. So, they're both doing a bit of work and it's paying off for us and them. So, no, it's all good. It's part of the business. Yes. You've got to make decisions. And when you're one of the better riders in town or one of the best, you're going to get off a great ride. And the big stables usually hold out, don't they? Yeah. Usually, they get their man. Yes. What about if it's a heavy track for him? Yeah, good question. I'll probably leave it to race morning to decide whether we run or not. Okay. Just for the sheer fact, you want to see what the track ends up like. He won on a heavy 10 at Sandown first up. I can't see the track being anything like that, hopefully, at this stage. But he won very well on debut, but he's definitely better who is on top of the ground, you know?
Speaker 2Yeah. I remember you walked the track that morning. You were weighing up whether you start or not. Thank God you did for the putters who got on at a big price. Unfortunately, it wasn't me, but there was a few that day.
Speaker 8Yeah, good on them. Good on them that they found him. He's obviously a quality galloper and he's a quality race. So, we're hoping to make our presence felt, that's for sure.
Speaker 2So, if you don't go around on Saturday, and most likely you will, but what other option do you have for him then heading towards a cool more?
Speaker 8Well, the way the races for the three-rods are planned, I think it's. Because of the tracks that they're at, these lead-ups for these races are very well-spaced, which makes it hard sometimes to keep them going and make sure we do the right thing by the horses. But next week is the Blue Sapphire as well as the Scalacci at Wait for Age. So, there's two races there that we'll look at if we don't go around, but it'd have to be an absolute quagmire for him probably not to go around and rain on the day, and I would think otherwise he'd be going around, you know? Yeah. We've sort of set for this. We're very happy, and he had a very quiet jump out the other morning there. And Billy, what do you think? Billy Egan jumped on him and was wrapped in the horse. He thought there was obviously a lot of improvement since he sat on him on debut when he was a passenger. the horse can obviously do the right thing for us this week.
Speaker 2What about Swift Star going around at Cranbourne on Friday night? She was very good on Naboo.
Speaker 8Yeah, nice filly. Got a fair amount of talent herself. I would highly suggest that she'll come out if that rain comes. Cranbourne can't handle that sort of rain, the amount of rain that we're meant to get. And she's a capitalist filly, and capitalists obviously are clearly better on top of the ground than not, you know. So I would think that'd be the case. But if she goes around, I'd expect her to be hard to beat. But my theory would be she probably won't.
Speaker 2What about Karen? If she gains a start, she probably will. There'll be a few scratchings.
Speaker 8Well, there could be. She's another one. I'll be honest, I don't want to run her on the last race on a Friday night at Cranbourne. If they even get that far, to be honest. So I dare say she won't go around.
Speaker 2If I gave you $100 this week, what would you do with it, Lloyd?
Speaker 8Oh, we're left to probably one horse to race for if we have a runner, Gareth. So let's go straight out on Mbuwe. Let's go for the juggler.
Speaker 2It's bloody exciting, mate. I can't wait to see what he can do on this day in here. It's a terrific race. It's got everybody talking. I guess we always get excited.
Speaker 8It's probably the race of the day that everyone's keen to see. And I really like the barrier draw for us. So hoping that we can see the best of Mbuwe on Saturday against a quality lineup of horses. Who's the horse to beat in your eyes? Great question. I think the next episode has come right on. I thought his trials in Sydney were plain. The master trainer's probably got him fit now because he's had four trials, I reckon. So four trials leading him. Kieran doesn't leave him not fit. I'm saying that he's the one to beat, in my opinion.
Speaker 2Yeah, I agree with you. So it's going to be a fascinating race. There'll be horses that put their hand up and there'll be a few bubble bursts. There's no doubt about that. And at Dane Hill, it seems to happen each and every year. So looking forward to it. Good on you, mate. Thanks for that, Lloyd.
Speaker 8Thanks, mate. Cheers.
Speaker 2There's Lloyd Kennewell, 8.48. In fact, we've got Indy Wynette who joins us now because Smoochino makes his Victorian debut down the straight there at Flemington on Saturday. Indy, hello to you.
Speaker 9Hello, Gareth. How are you?
Speaker 2Good, thank you. Jeez, it was a good run first up in SA there the other day.
Speaker 9Yeah, it was massive. Everything didn't go our way with the weight and getting crunched out the barriers and all that. But yeah, he pulled up with a big abscess after that. Okay. He's just improved so much since that bursted. So yeah, I'm very excited to head over to Flemington.
Speaker 2Yeah, what are you like? How are you feeling having a runner at headquarters?
Speaker 9Very nervous, obviously.
Speaker 2How many times have you been to Flemington, Indy?
Speaker 9Zero. I haven't even been to watch races or anything. So it's going to be first time for everyone.
Speaker 2Yeah. Austin wouldn't have been to Flemington. I wouldn't imagine.
Speaker 9Yeah, I don't know. If he was to watch, I don't know. I'm not sure.
Speaker 2First time at Flemington, you've got a runner in the Gill guy in a pretty handy field and it's going to be pouring rain or it's going to be a lot of rain in Melbourne over the next 48 hours. That's what's predicted anyway. So how do you think he will go on a rain-affected track?
Speaker 9I think he'll go okay. He won the Northern Stakes on a soft track. Yeah. Yeah. Last start in WA. He gets through it okay. I wouldn't want it to be too soft though. That would make me worry. But yeah, we're committing today and heading over.
Speaker 2So yeah. He'll start regardless then.
Speaker 9Well, as always, the horse comes first. So even if we go there and it's no good, the horse will come first. And it will be a no-go. But I'm hoping they don't get as much as they're predicting.
Speaker 2Yeah. I think everyone's excited to see what he can do and how he can measure up. It does look a lovely race for him if he can turn up at his best there on Saturday.
Speaker 9Yeah. And I think with the wide barriers, it's good for him. You know, he goes in last. So he doesn't have to stand in there for a long time. And being that wide gate, I think, yeah, he should just ping the gates and do his usual smooth Chino race pattern. So I'm hoping, yeah, that will be the go on Saturday.
Speaker 2And how do you think he'll handle the straight?
Speaker 9I actually think it will suit him better. It's, you know, every sort of race he's been in where he's had to be behind someone or next to someone, he gets keen and can get his head up and wants to run early. So I think a bit more tempo on up the straight will suit him a lot more. He can just get into a better rhythm without, you know, having to be restrained too much.
Speaker 2Yeah. And it's also a good chance. A challenge for Austin Gallardi, who gets the best out of this horse, but he gets an opportunity to take on Australia's best riders as well. And I guess the other challenge for him is obviously trying to write this horse down the straight as well.
Speaker 9Yeah. He's very excited. We've been chatting a lot. You know, I just said to him, just treat it as another race. Just treat it like you're in Perth. You know the horse, ride the horse. You know him and don't get caught up in it, in all the hype. But, yeah, he's very excited to head across.
Speaker 2And he's racing, I think, at Kalgoorlie today. Then he'll jump on the plane, probably with Pikey, and then come down to Flemington. And that's good. I reckon it's good that Pikey's there as well in the jockey's room just to help him out.
Speaker 9Yeah, for sure. Yeah, I think it's going to be really good. And I hope he gets a few winners today, get his confidence up.
Speaker 2Yeah. No, it'll be some story. The young trainer from Albany who lives in South Australia with a superstar horse, with the jockey not many people would know about, turning up to Flemington on Saturday, winning a Gilguy Stakes. So it would be some story. And I think you've got the horse to do it, Indy. And you're on fire as well since you made the move because I couldn't believe it. And I was kicking myself. The money that we've lost on Brave Apache throughout the days backing him at Albany, it was Bella Clava Cup Day, and I was watching the races. And he won at, what, $17? And he never really looked like it. I liked getting beat. And I thought, you are. And I saw and I thought I should have a dollar each way on him. But it was good to see him win a race anyway.
Speaker 9Yeah. Well, it must be you then whenever you don't back him. So you're not allowed to back him anymore.
Speaker 2No, I promise you I won't. But you've had a pretty good time of it since you've made that move. Your horses are going great.
Speaker 9Yeah, they've all gone really good. It was the first time training on a track for me. We're based on a race course. And I was a bit worried with how I've got to change my training. And, you know, it's not really my style, but now obviously I ride all my horses. So I know them. I know when they're feeling good and when they're fit, when they're ready, it helps. It helps heaps. So, yeah, they're all going really good at the moment. We've got quite a few in the pipeline that haven't shown their faces yet at the races. So, yeah, hopefully it keeps improving.
Speaker 2Love it. If I gave you $100, what are you doing with it this weekend?
Speaker 9Oh, I have to just go on Smoochino.
Speaker 2Yep. Love it. That's the Gill guy. Smoochino there. Indy Wynette. You go and get them on Saturday. Enjoy Flemington. There's no place like it, Indy. You'll love it. Oh, I can't wait.
Speaker 9Yeah. There we go.
Speaker 2Indy Wynette, the trainer of Smoochino, who goes around in the Gill guy on Saturday afternoon at Flemington. Time for a break. We'll come back and we'll wrap up this hour. And then after nine o'clock, the assistant trainer to Kirraman, Jack Turnbull, will be
Speaker 1joining me here on Giddyup. It's 499-736-736. Live across Australia, this is Giddyup with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 2Welcome back to Giddyup. Gareth Hall with you. It's quickly approaching 8:58. So far for Giddyup stable, mate. What's been your best push, Paulie Sebastiani? We've had a good couple of pushes, I reckon, this morning.
Speaker 7Mate, I don't know how wet it's going to get at Flemington. I think Smoochino's a great chance.
Speaker 2Yeah, I reckon he's a great chance as well.
Speaker 7It's a good, good each way bet, I think. Great to have Indy Reinert on, and she's never been to Flemington.
Speaker 2Can you believe that? It is some story, isn't it? And Austin Ghilardi, I doubt that he's been to Flemington either. I don't know. So he's at Kalgoorlie today, and then he'll get on a flight and come to Melbourne, and he'll have his chance to ride a winner there at Flemington. It's a darn good horse. He is a good horse. Very, very good horse. He was massive there first up in South Australia. He should have won. Nothing went right for him.
Speaker 7No, had the heavy weight as well, and up the straight, he's a really nice straight line horse as well. When he flattens out into those home straights there around the bend, he looks pretty quick. So I think he's a nice play there for the $100 staking plan.
Speaker 2Portinari was interesting from J.D. Hayes, 1,600 meters getting back on a heavy track. So I found that interesting, but he's a pretty good judge, J.D., so he's hard to argue with.
Speaker 7Wide barrier of the concern there. Yeah. Wide barrier of the concern.
Speaker 2Yeah. 0-4-double-9-7-3-6-7-3-6 to join our conversation on the Garrod's Horse and Hound text line. We've got Jack Turnbull coming up next. We'll talk to that. A lot of people asking me about Matty Smith and Affleworth. Now, they'll make a decision later today. It's a difficult decision. They don't want to come to Melbourne if it's a heavy track. They'd rather stay in Sydney, but they would prefer to come to Melbourne, if you know what I mean. So they're going to make their decision as late as possible, whether they come to Melbourne or not, with the favorite for the Bark Cummings. It's 8:58. Jack Turnbull to join me next here on Giddy Up.
Speaker 1Text us on 0-4-double-9-7-3-6-7-3-6. Live across Australia, this is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 2A fellow Lions supporter, Jackie Turnbull, joins us, the assistant trainer to Kira Maher on this Thursday. G'day, Jack. Have you recovered from what? What a weekend for you. The Lions dominate. They'll not dominate, but they win the unwinnable match, really, at the end of the day in an AFL grand final. And then your team put on an absolute dead set clinic there on Sunday with five winners, including pride of Jenny and Jimmy Starr.
Speaker 10Yeah, it was an amazing weekend. We seem to have a pretty good affinity with the grand final weekend of the last couple of years with Southport and Jenny. And I think we had a four-timer last year on the Sunday at Mornington. So. It's been, yeah, very fruitful. But, yeah, this weekend, just with Jimmy winning the group one, getting back to form, Jenny winning a third fee, and then the Lions, it was, yeah, one to remember.
Speaker 2It was a magnificent performance by two of the best horses, I reckon, Kieran's put a bridle on in pride of Jenny and also Jimmy Starr. They're so exciting in different ways. We all know what Jenny does. And then Jimmy with that acceleration. When he's on song and it goes his way and he gets the set-up, that he wants, and Ethan can get him to the outside, boy, he's exciting to watch.
Speaker 10He really is, yeah. I mean, he broke 33, then he broke 22. Like, when he's right and he's on, he flies. So it was just a great race to watch. It was very similar to the Oakley. And, you know, he missed the start. He's a bit slow out. We were never that confident, really, until, well, I wasn't, until about the 700. And then he got on the back, I think, gladiola. And it was just a. It was a really nice watch out for that.
Speaker 2It was just good. It was like watching the Brisbane Lions. Jimmy Starr, he missed the kick. He was two lengths behind the second-last torch. You think he's got no chance. And all of a sudden, he thought, oh, he might have a chance here. And then with 100 to go, he knew that he was home. So, yeah, great to see. Is Ozzy, I don't think, I think Ozzy's making his mind up today, whether he goes to an Everest or not. Or has he made that mind up?
Speaker 10No, I'm not. I haven't actually spoken to him. I haven't spoken to him in the last couple of days. I know Kieran has. But it's, as we know, it's all to do with what deal we may get and who may offer the slot. So, there's a few factors to go into it. But main thing is we're in the perfect position to pivot and head there if we like.
Speaker 2Plenty to happen over the next couple of days regarding the weather. So, we'll go through your runners first of all at Flemington. Now, Lero King Tut and Naval Academy over the 1,200 metres, race number two at Flemington. Who would be your best chance there?
Speaker 10Well, best chance would be Lero just with how he returns. King Tut's been trialling up very well and does enjoy getting his toe in the ground. Naval Academy does need to get back to form. He is affected down the straight, but he needs to pull his finger out.
Speaker 2This is a lead up to a derby, the superimposed. The horse that we're on in the derby on Giddyup is Skewer. What's your expectations with him? The Godolphin Galloper there, the son of Gaius.
Speaker 10I thought he was a ridiculous price.
Speaker 2Why is he that big of a price?
Speaker 10Yeah, I don't know. I'm not sure, but that's fine. I think he's got good improvement. He's going to be better for blinkers. He gets blinkers on this weekend and the rise in trips. So, I'm sure why he's not wanted in the market, but yeah, he can go out there and show what he's capable of and then we can progress.
Speaker 2He'll be wanted now, I'm going to know what the bookies might say. Gareth's backing him. He might drift. He may even further, but I can't believe the price as well. He's 31 into 23. He was a big price skewer. So, that's exciting. What about Vallis and Melbourne Boy?
Speaker 10Vallis is on the up. We were thinking of potentially going to a Giddy's, but we've opted to go this pathway onto a derby. He was much better last start. It closed off really well. And Melbourne Boy was good against Scarol, who's then gone on to run third in the start. So, Melbourne Boy is very much a staying horse. He needs everybody. He needs to be in the top three in terms of the trip, which he's going to start getting.
Speaker 2But we've got three genuine chances. Yeah. Stipulation, Frank, the Regal Ambition form, and Regal Ambition, Frank, the Stipulation form in a way at Geelong the other day. Your expectations with her stepping up to a mile
Speaker 10in a Manifold Stakes? I think the trip's okay for all our fillies. Well, the two that are going to run Stipulation in St. Louis. So, the only thing would be the shorter turnaround in race times. Yeah. So, the two that are going to run Stipulation in St. Louis. But she appears to be in good nick. She's got nice cover on her, and she's very much on the up. So, I think the eight furlongs would be okay.
Speaker 2Yeah. All those fillies, like Saintly Dancer, she was good there the other day behind the stable, mate.
Speaker 10She was, yeah. Ran a nice figure. Was well and truly beaten by Ice Lady, who was good. She led that day. But, yeah, we opted to go here with Saintly rather than Thousand Guineas for the moment. It's probably our best chance to win a stakes race. So, she's in good nick. So, hopefully, she runs back to how she was last up.
Speaker 2Out of those fillies and the boys that we just mentioned in the superimposed, would you be concerned with any of those gallopers if it was a heavy track?
Speaker 10If it was bottomless, it would be a query. I think Melbourne boys find Vallis is okay in school, get through it. Saintly Dancer wouldn't be convinced. But, at least they're early, and the track itself wouldn't have a lot of racing on it.
Speaker 2All right. Then we move on. We move on to race five. And the horse that will love it will be Tennessee Bound, you would imagine.
Speaker 10For sure. Yeah. She's going to get her conditions. One of a couple on Saturday about saying that they're going to thrive in that ground, if we do get it. But, she's found her race.
Speaker 2Yep. And what about the Oaks winner in Queensland, Fireball Miss, who's first up?
Speaker 10She is first up. And she's first up off one jump out. So, she's not a big horse. And she's very clean winded. So, she'll kick off here. And, you know, we might make her. Weighed to an Empire Rose second up. That was the plan. But, she'll be there running on, ideally, to then be better second up.
Speaker 2I'm excited to see the next episode. And if the rain comes, surely, are you happy to see the rain come? Because he was awesome on a heavy track.
Speaker 10Yeah, correct. He's very effective in the ground. And I was walking back next to him with the track work today. He just looks so well. He's picked up in the last two weeks, which he needed to. But, he's just in the zone. And if we get. If we do get a drop of rain, it's going to really help him.
Speaker 2Yeah. So, that's a good push for the next episode. And I think there was concern whether he had come on when he was in Sydney. But, he looks like you've got him back now.
Speaker 10Yeah, that's right. I mean, his second trial was just a pass mark. We were expecting of a lot more. And he's since come down here. We've changed a little bit. We were originally Poseidon. But, a few more trials, a couple of gallops, and just the travel. But, he's really come on physically.
Speaker 2Jeez, piggyback will love a heavy track there at Flemington and a Bart Cummings. And Juju Kibbo, he's been going super well of late. And he comes to Melbourne.
Speaker 10Piggyback's in good shape. She's arrived safely. Juju, we're still deciding with. Okay. So, we'll have to see. Mr. Monaco looks well. He was good first up. Didn't make a lot of ground last start. But, if you just go off that first up run, then he's obviously a decent staying prospect and gets to the ground.
Speaker 2And, what about Jenny Vermoes?
Speaker 10She loves it. I'm confident she'll go well. I mean, she was good last start against one of ours, Chocolates. She gets to the ground. She tends to race best off slower run races. So, it'll be interesting to see how much pace is injected. But, second time at the trip, fourth up. You know, there's a lot to like about her.
Speaker 2Light infantry man, I think, is the key to the Turnbull stakes. He wasn't quite ready to ride him when he shows his best, when he's on the road. He's on pace and setting a solid tempo. How do you ride him in the Turnbull stakes third up?
Speaker 10Oh, we've drawn the gate just to pop out and roll. Like, you're not giving him a squeeze and you're not trying to lead, I wouldn't suspect. But, we'll let the pace form around us and just keep him happy. He's a horse that doesn't possess a turn of foot. He just lengthens and sustains. And, as you said, we're now in a position to pitch third up right trip to be really sort of, turning the screws. And, he's one that likes the grounds, which is always nice to know.
Speaker 2Well, the question I think most punters will be thinking now, then who does lead in the Turnbull stakes if you don't want to lead on light infantry man?
Speaker 10That's a good question. But, look, we're confident with who we have. And, if they don't want to lead, then, you know, we might just be left there. But, for the moment, you know, we haven't got a plan as such just to be that horse. He's got the ability to be tractable. He can sit behind and all go in front, which is, which is always nice.
Speaker 2So, Ryan's the Caulfield Cup champ. What are your expectations with him in a Turnbull Stakes?
Speaker 10Well, it's his first opportunity against the big boys, really, at the conditions. But, he's got good wet track form and he was very dynamic when he won last start. And, his track work with George has been supreme. So, it's more excitement, I think, because, you know, in a week's time, we might be looking back and saying, "Who have we got here?" So, Yeah, it'd be one of those races to win that really puts your foot down with authority and it's exciting. But I do think he's capable. I reckon his form back in Europe and how he's trained, how he presents, he could really put his hand up.
Speaker 2What's his form like on a heavy track?
Speaker 10He's had a go on a heavy track as such back overseas, but we're confident he'll swim. So I don't think it's a negative thing.
Speaker 2I reckon at the start of the spring when I asked Kieran his best chance at a Melbourne Cup, he said Middle Earth. Do you think if I asked him that today, that Middle Earth would still be your best chance in the Cup?
Speaker 10At the moment, you would have to, yeah. Middle Earth's a different operator to a few of our others. He needs 2,400 and this time around he's seasoned, he's bigger, he's got a little bit of weight, but he's had that experience and obviously running a good race last year. This time last year, we were really having to work hard to get him involved. This year, he's taking us there on his own. So I think if you pin Kieran down, he would probably hold him first for the moment, for sure.
Speaker 2St. George, if it's a heavy track, your thoughts there?
Speaker 10Well, he's not going to love it if it's a heavy track. We've found that in the past. He gets through soft going, but yeah, if it was to be worse then and it was starting to get tired, probably not. But thankfully we are in a good position going forward to be where we want to be. But for his sake, hopefully it misses the majority
Speaker 2of it. Jeez, Kings Valley was a sneaky good run behind Serrana, St. George and the Naturalism.
Speaker 10He was, yeah, and he needed to run well. His first couple were pretty lackluster, so closed off nicely. He's going towards the Corfield Cup. It's a big step up in class, but it's just another run at a mile and a quarter and then we can go to the Corfield Cup.
Speaker 2Your chances there in the Gilguy Stakes, Jenny the Fox and Jimmy Ricard, your thoughts there?
Speaker 10Well, Jimmy Ricard's come down, so he looks a million. Very imposing type. Loves soft ground, hence he's come back for it. So he's first up off a long break, but track work's been good. Joe and Kieran have given him plenty of work, so he's a classy horse when right. And Jenny the Fox, I would imagine may take a run and then she'll probably poke up to 14 in the next couple of starts.
Speaker 2Yeah, and Tenka Marmich, he's the favourite now, but he might even firm in a little bit more, because he won on a good track there the other day at Ballarat and the Golden Nugget. He was so impressive. He travelled sweetly and we all know how effective he is on a track like this if it's a heavy track there at Flemington.
Speaker 10Correct. I think end of the day, if we get the rain with the weight he's got, he will just continue to firm. But he'll be one I'll be looking forward to late in the day for sure.
Speaker 2What about Fantify?
Speaker 10She's been going well. She's mixed form a little bit. When she first came to us, we were of the opinion she didn't like soft ground, but then she's run okay on it. When she's right, she's capable, but it'd be hard to back her with confidence, especially if the track deteriorates that far.
Speaker 2At Ram, with Crown of Fire, does she go the Dulcify instead of the Flemington race? Yes.
Speaker 10Yes, she does.
Speaker 2Are you happy with her?
Speaker 10She's good, yeah. She got a little way back last start, but her work late was good. The rider who was on that day, which doesn't come to mind at the moment, was very complimentary of the run, which is always what you're going off to. She's there to run well.
Speaker 2That is a good push. Who did ride her that day? I'll tell you who it was. It was my computer loads. It was Dylan Gibbons, who's a good judge. There you go. I think it was Dylan Gibbons, it was. Then we go to race five over the 1600 metres. Rock Empire represents the mass stable.
Speaker 10Think it's on? Well, and we've drawn a better gate just to flow. He seems to be a arty, on-pace galloping horse, and now that we're deeper into a prep, that'll be his chance. But hopefully the headgear does help.
Speaker 2So you'll have runners in the Metro, but obviously the rain might be an advantage to certain gallopers coming to Flemington. So when do you make up your mind regarding those three?
Speaker 10Well, Juju at this stage will stay, but today, you know, we've got opportunity to travel tonight, and that is Chandler, no problems. But it looks a nice race for him. He ran a very good race last start, so it could just be his go.
Speaker 2She's Vivienne. I know she was only okay for a start, but she's $91. We all know at her best she wouldn't be far away in an Epson with 51 on her back.
Speaker 10No, she was okay. I thought she was a pass mark for mine, but hopefully there's plenty of pressure. She's got no weight, because when she's on, and there's speed, she can rattle home late. So it's one of those big races that you want to be in, because generally that creates pressure, and that's why she's there. So hopefully second up fitter, she's
Speaker 2better. The Premier Stakes sees tempted your superstar sprinting mare. She's $1.65 with Bet365. How's she trained on after her devastating first up victory a few
Speaker 10weeks back? She's excellent. From all reports, I watched her gallop during the week, and I've actually never seen her in the flesh, believe it or not, but she's an imposing figure on the gallop, and I know Jo's very happy. Kieran's very happy. So yeah, for our sake, hopefully she goes there, is as dominant or more dominant, and then can tackle the big fella in the Everest.
Speaker 2With her gait, she'll go back like she did there first up, but that turn of foot just gets her out of trouble, really, doesn't it?
Speaker 10Yeah, it does. I mean, her ability to quicken is amazing. She's just got so much pace, and it's what makes her a good horse, obviously. But yeah, I'm not sure what Chad will do. He'll have a few different plans, but main thing is she'll be able to get himself out of a hole if they do find himself in one.
Speaker 2Do you like Navy Pilot in the last?
Speaker 10I do, but he needs to be at his best Saturday. He's drawn sticky, and he's a horse that runs very well fresh first up. There's a few staff internally that backed him first up at a big price, which was a good get, so hopefully he continues that, but I thought the class of races was hard enough for him Saturday.
Speaker 2What a team you have engaged there at Flemington and also at Randwick. I don't know how many horses you got in, but maybe 30, I reckon. Close to that, anyway.
Speaker 1025 at Flemington, we've accepted with, so it's a monster day. It's very exciting. It's what it's all about, to have the horses running in these types of races and in form, so hopefully we can continue that form off last
Speaker 2Sunday. I reckon that's a record, 36 horses. We nearly went through there for the Marg camp, both at Flemington and Randwick on Saturday. But wait, there's still more. We need a winner at
Speaker 10Warrnambool today. We do need a winner. I will go with, if the rain doesn't come, I'd go with Mr. Sue. Yes. If it does,
Speaker 2Invisible Magic. Alright then, so race eight, number three or two. Love that. And I think at Cranbourne, tomorrow night, we're just waiting on the weather there a little bit.
Speaker 10Talking to Tim Bailey, he's very concerned about a washout, so depending on the ground and conditions, if we stay on the turf, I'd have something on Keelanore, but we'll just say there's 40 to 60 mil forecast down here, so it could be a non-event.
Speaker 2Beautiful. So that's race six, number eight. And this is what you did to us last week, Jack Turnbull. I'm going to ask you the question, of course, if I gave you $100, if I gave you $100, what would you do with it this weekend, Jack? $100?
Speaker 10Well, I would go I would go Royal Supremacy into Jimmy Starr.
Speaker 2It's just legendary type of stuff, Jack. The Lions win. You delivered an 81 multi, that was, I think, around $80 or $70. We had a host of text messages came in on Monday and then, of course, you had that day there on Sunday. So, mate, it had to be nearly the best weekend of your life. Hopefully you followed your own advice and had something to go on that multi.
Speaker 10Yeah, I did, which is great. Yeah, I got a few texts as well who were listening off owners and friends who had had a dabble, so it doesn't happen very often, but you're very grateful when it does.
Speaker 2So if I gave you $100 this weekend, Jack, what would you do with it?
Speaker 10I'd be going the next episode into
Speaker 2Ten Commandments. So race six, number three, the next episode in the Dane Hills Stakes and then the final event at Flemington, race 10, number 11, Ten Commandments. You're a bloody star, Jack. As Robbo says, gee, Jack's my favourite guest you get on. His tips always win or they're about. So there you go. A lot of love for you on the Garrods Horse and Hound text line, Jack. We'll let you go, mate, and good luck this weekend. Not a problem. Thanks, Garrods. There's Jack Turnbull, the assistant trainer to Kieran Maher, of course, looking after his stable at Cranbourne. 90 minutes past nine. We'll take a break. Adrian Bott to join us next.
Speaker 1Text us on 0499 736 736 live across Australia.
Speaker 2Some big news coming out of the VRC once again this morning, and it reads the Victoria Racing Club today announced that Chairman Neil Wilson has advised the board that he will not not stand for election this year and will conclude his tenure. as chairman and board director at this year's annual general meeting scheduled for the 15th of December. Following a comprehensive succession process, the VRC board has appointed Vin Cox as the club's 23rd chairman to lead the club into its next chapter. So Cox will formally assume the role at the conclusion of the AGM on December 15 with Wilson remaining chairman until then and working closely with Cox to support a smooth transition, particularly through the upcoming Melbourne Cup Carnival. So Neil Wilson has been with the VRC for a very long time. He was also the CEO of that wonderful club and then he became chair. He's done a lot of great work for the VRC. He's been a great servant of that famous race club and he hands over the reins to one of the very best operators that we've seen in the racing game, Vin Cox, who had a wonderful time of it as the boss of Godolphin. He's been on the board as well for a long time. And yeah, the VRC are in good hands with the leadership of Vin Cox. So Vin Cox to become the chairman of the country's most famous race club, the VRC, at the AGM meeting after the 15th of December when Neil Wilson officially resigned. So there you go. Adrian Bott now joins us because Sir Delius goes around. He's champion galloper in the Turnbull Stakes on Saturday. Hello to you, Adrian. Hey, morning, Gareth. Are you concerned with. Are you concerned with all this rain around for your boy?
Speaker 11No, not at all. He seems to have the ability to handle those conditions. If it brings a little bit more stamina into it, I think all those things are just going to play into his favour.
Speaker 2How do you ride him on the weekend? Because obviously there's not too much pace on paper. We just had Jack Turnbull on. He goes, I don't really want to lead with light infantry, man. We all thought he was the leader. Could your boy take it up if Craig Williams wants him to?
Speaker 11Yeah, look, I think he's. Certainly got the pace to do so and wouldn't be afraid of doing that by any means. Yeah, he was forward over the mile and, you know, enjoys the. You know, does seem to enjoy a high-pressure race. So, yeah, he's sort of got to do a bit of work to inject that out of ourselves. Yeah, I don't see that being an issue either.
Speaker 2His last race before the Cox Plate, so there would be improvement in him, but you're confident that he can run a big race come Saturday and we get to see him close to his best anyway?
Speaker 11Yeah, well, that's it. It'd certainly need to be. So, you know, after Saturday, three weeks away from the Cox Plate, you'd want to be pretty close. So, yeah, with that, want to see a very strong performance on Saturday.
Speaker 2Yard Watchers thought he was a little bit hot in the yard there the other day first up. Is that just him or was he a little bit fresh there first up in the Maccabi Diva?
Speaker 11Probably a little bit unusual for him. Haven't seen him get quite as warm as what he did. But just put that down to him. Yeah, obviously, you know, feeling well. Had him, tried to have him a little bit on the fresher side going into the mile race first up to be effective there. And yeah, he may have just sort of paraded in that manner.
Speaker 2All right, then. So we watch him in the yard and hopefully he's back to the old Sir Delius then come Saturday and then we can light up because it does look a lovely race for him, Adrian, if he's ready to go.
Speaker 11I'd expect him to parade much, much, much more along with how he previously was. Yes, he has.
Speaker 2Should we have something on Campbell Dino in the bar coming? She's his heavy track forms. It reads well.
Speaker 11Yeah, well, if you do get that rain or the track conditions suit, well, he does thrive under those conditions. You know, he's a bit disappointing. Second up last prep as well and was able to bounce back. So not concerned by that run that he had there last start. Step up in trip should be a big positive. I thought his first up run was excellent. Yeah, obviously, I would like to have seen more from him last start, but I can certainly be forgiving of that.
Speaker 2All right, then. We all know the success that Gay and yourself have had with two-year-olds and you saddle up a couple at a breeders plate, Flying Houdini and Stasis. Your thoughts there?
Speaker 11Yeah, Flying Houdini probably looks more the natural, sharper two-year-old type from what we've seen and the way he trialed. He's got a good tactical speed and a nice pattern for those young horses and Stasis, I thought, was still an excellent trial in his own right. He was doing his best work late. He's an improver and one that I think we'll continue to see a lot more of deeper in his career, but probably in terms of Saturday's race, Flying Houdini's probably the sharper type going into the run and a nice hand in the fillies division. They've all drawn a bit awkwardly, unfortunately, but I'd probably say Bourbon Beat was probably one of the more impressive of the three out of the trialers.
Speaker 2We're ready to back Savagram yesterday, but you saved him for the Delsify. I know there's big wraps on him. Do you think he can show his best stepping out to the 1600?
Speaker 11Yeah, he can do. He's probably been a little bit unfair on the horse to assess him off his last couple of runs. He's obviously very good first up, breaking his maiden and sort of didn't really do much. He didn't really have the ideal races to progress him and sort of remained at a distance short of his best at that grade and some high pressure races probably just didn't suit him. So getting out to the mile at Randwick's big positive and he's just going to be better suited the further he goes as well.
Speaker 2It looks like he can find the front there on Saturday as well.
Speaker 11Yeah, if he can control things, tempo of that mile might suit. It was a bit frantic there at his last start. So he had a few excuses.
Speaker 2Jeez, you've done a great job. You've done a great job with the Euphrates. That's been some training performance. Can he go on with it now in a big race like the Metropolitan?
Speaker 11Yeah, I'd like to think he can. I'd like to think we've still got some upside left in him and particularly as we sort of see him race over further. He was excellent there last start, the way he sustained that speed over that trip. And I guess the best thing about him is he can keep sustaining that over the course of the race. Over further. So if he can do that, that certainly makes it difficult for the opposition to get into the race running those types of sectionals.
Speaker 2And then you got fully lit when in Epsom.
Speaker 11Obviously, he bumped into Autumn Glow in the Epsom last year. He got a few factors to suit, race run to suit, and whether he can get as good a run this time through. But he's got a nice draw. He's down in the weights. Probably a race with still a little bit more depth to it than it was last year. It's a strong race. Yeah, he's going well and probably arguably had a better lead up this time through.
Speaker 2All right. Then if I gave you $100 this weekend, Adrian, what would you do with it?
Speaker 11I'd stick with the Euphrates to keep winning for us. I feel there's still a bit more upside with him.
Speaker 2Yeah, the Euphrates race 7, number one in the Metropolitan. On Saturday, any winners at Kembler Grange today?
Speaker 11Dignifying would probably be the best of the two. But in saying that, he may just need a little bit further as well.
Speaker 2All right. Then that's race four, number five there in Sydney today or at Kembler Grange. Good on you, Adrian. Thanks for joining us as always, mate. Good luck across the weekend. Just a quick plagiarism. Does he come to the Guineas?
Speaker 11No, he'll stay up here for a couple of the Tap Craig calendar present or races.
Speaker 2Yeah. All right, then. Thanks for that, mate. There's Adrian Bott. It's right on 9.30. We're going to take a break. Coming up after that, we'll be catching up with David Gately for Gator's Game Plan ahead of this magical weekend of racing.
Speaker 1On Giddy Up, it's time for Gator's Game Plan with David Gately. Good morning to you,
Speaker 2Gator, you beautiful man.
Speaker 12Well, a very good morning to you. I could say the same about you.
Speaker 2Yes. Now, I don't like it. We're at the selection table on a Thursday before Saturday's big match, Group 1 racing. For us punters trying to find out if we can, trying to work out how we back a winner. Basically, it's the start of the spring for me anyway, after the AFL Grand Final. I don't know if you're in Sydney, you've got the NRL Grand Final on the Sunday. But it's Epsom Day there. But it's just a dilemma that we have. Like, as the coach, you sit us down and say, make sure you pack your screw-ins on Saturday.
Speaker 12Yeah, it's a bit like that, isn't it? Obviously, I mean, the good thing is we've got three different weather bureaus and we're all seeing different things. That's really handy. But look at his hard work predicting the future and there'll be plenty of feedback if they get it wrong, I'm sure.
Speaker 2Yes, yes. But I think. I think we'll be on a soft to a heavy track. I reckon, yeah, at Flemington anyway. Sydney, I reckon, would be good to soft.
Speaker 12Yeah, happy to work on those. Yeah, see how we go.
Speaker 2Yeah. Let's get to the key categories now for Gator's game plan. Everyone knows the drill by now. So we go through some key categories with Gator and then we leave it up to you, the selectors, to ask the coach a question to help you back a winner this weekend. So we always start off with the first athlete that we would be picking in our team this weekend is your best bet.
Speaker 12yeah look i'm pretty keen on genesis runner race four at ramwick horse number one who was really good to the line first up and ran by diameter who came out mine of course last sunday then strong home again second up at 1400 made good ground on a horse called tenenbaum that horse was terrific in a very fast golden rose um gets to 1800 1600 looks it looks a plus and clear best for the day all
Speaker 2right then so that's race four um what number is that gal number one number one race four number one um then we go to the long division race the race that's the most difficult race for you to try and sort out across sydney and melbourne on saturday
Speaker 12yeah so it's a common theme the last race at melbourne is saturday i think it's a set play to make it challenging for us in the quaddie but um we'll take a few and keep an eye on the weather and certainly we'll see what happens next week so we'll see what happens next week certainly we'll know the pattern by race 10 but the paris lane is not easy to sort uh given you've got 10 commandments we know as a swimmer um but back to 1400 he's proven vulnerable before for that horse you've got just party was good first up hot form race then luck was second up how heavy does he want it coated lantique was terrific that same race and should handle the ground no worries and we'll see what happens next week and zuto can win but i don't know how wet he wants it amenable is amenable unfortunately for that horse and step hard he's tried well i don't think it even ends there tough
Speaker 2finish yeah that is a tough finish there at flemington on saturday um and then we move on to of course the d-day
Speaker 12horse yeah so um yeah blue door was dynamite last week um hopefully gold coast bell yeah can uh be the same she was obviously an exceptional winner first up ran you know quality last 600 figure asterix you know wet track um then did a bit of work after a tardy start at flemington she went down swinging um she certainly wasn't bad i just wonder if she's better on wet ground so um that's what i'm thinking she's actually unbeaten on wet ground in races beyond a thousand meters not a not a layup the rose of kingston but um you know if she's she was two dollars ten last time wasn't she yeah so it's d-day for her i think back on wet ground might be the
Speaker 2key and danny o'brien gave her a really good push this morning so in fact he made her his 100 staking plan there at flemington on saturday and then we move on to the next category is the highlight race for you gator what race are you looking forward to most yeah look
Speaker 12i'm gonna get the dead head uh dead heat between the tab turn bull stacks and the tab epsom they're both time-honored races and fabulous races history says the turnbulls uh the one um that generally gives you the corfield cup winner um and even you know often the melbourne cup winner uh i i had a bit of trouble splitting alyana and serdelius um and and the advantage of a wet track is clearly uh half yours whether whether or not he needs to up a couple of lengths on this well he does because they beat him by a couple lengths last year on a dry track and cosmic crusade he gets back on the wetter ground so terrific race to turnbull i've learned to alyana narrowly when she was uh third up last prep she won and beat serdelius um the tab turn uh the tab epsom is genuinely a four-year-old's race i've got no reason to to to jump off autumn boy and well written they're the two i'll i'll play there but a few for the quaddie the likes of attica idle flyer um for
Speaker 2the wider quad just back to the turnbull stakes um it doesn't look like there's that much speed in this year's race like light infantry man jack turnbull telling us that he'd prefer not to lead and serdelius looks like he's the only other horse that could be on the speed here um alyana doesn't like to be on pace william pike told us that they rode cosmic crusade at too close there the other day saint george will get back she's a hustler will get back if yours will get back saran um who knows where he'll settle from gate number one buckaroo needs time middle earth on a melbourne cup campaign same with i hope he wins and asterix and deacon so yeah it's going to be interesting to see what tempo we see in this year's turnbull stakes gator
Speaker 12yeah look i wouldn't be surprised if serdelius took it up she's a hustler i think they'll go forward surely um uh king's valley right empty man forward but not yeah he's not a natural leader i think either so uh yeah look doesn't look fearsome does it and it's probably advantage serdelius by race 8 we'll have a really good idea on on the pattern there's some i see a bit of chat about you know if it gets really wet at flemington yeah i think it'd be an advantage up and in i'm not a subscriber to that theory but i will be keeping a close eye on the early races and that might be the key to uh to finding
Speaker 2the winner in this year's uh turnbull there's a i think there's a lot of rain that's predicted today but the key to flemington if the even if it's heavy rain that comes today and tomorrow it's just a it's a beautiful track with its training so um it's it's able to handle all of that i think where it gets tricky for the punters and we've seen it on a few occasions when it rains during the day it just like different horses handle that type of surface different than they would if it wasn't raining if you know what i mean gator well 100 was the perfect example of that you just
Speaker 12meatloafed me oh sorry
Speaker 2sorry sorry about to
Speaker 12mention there and then she struck a wet track the next year and bolted it so different sort of wet tracks good good
Speaker 2call from you yeah um and that's why when um we're trying to work out the best possible plan to back winners on saturday is that um we have to make sure that we are moving with the match i guess the game because it can change pretty quickly on a saturday
Speaker 12100 and um you know i think that's one thing that's evolved in a number of sports hasn't it um sort of being able to adapt on the run and not not every punter gets that opportunity if they put their bets on but um but all we can do is inform them as best we can and yeah you know they'll certainly be doing that on racing.com and we'll be doing it on sky um and i'm sure and i know channel seven do the same so yeah let's let's arm the punters and protect them and hopefully have a
Speaker 2win and if they if you're listening to the team on scn track on a saturday afternoon but i think it's um there's no excuses this weekend gator because like the footy's finished surely they won't be playing cricket this weekend so they'll be able to watch the races so don't blame anyone but yourself this weekend unless you've got a wedding
Speaker 12yeah good call from you yeah no cricket's washed out generally first three weeks
Speaker 2yeah isn't it everyone gets used to pray for right
Speaker 12they go to the races yeah i
Speaker 2think cricket always starts let us know 049-736-736 on the garrett's and hound text line it always starts in the first weekend of october so yeah um it comes around pretty quickly the night watchman gator obviously you've told us about melbourne so you must be going
Speaker 12to sydney yeah i'm going to sin city race 10 nepo baby number 14 she's a big price for a good mayor um that was a very good seventh first up back and held up she's actually still last at the 200 and then really found the line drops three and a half kilos gets to 1200 joined on much closer look she's not a model but i can't believe she's 18 bucks yeah
Speaker 2what about your parlay
Speaker 12gator oh bang last week bang bang don't mention all right well i was about to mention it as well
Speaker 2but i thought well you'll get in before me but i was i was ready to go i was ready to go no i was
Speaker 12just at the front here in my local and that little ticket that part was awesome you can pack up now guys we're done thanks um grace for you
Speaker 2two out of three and bad bet when you get it like well done yeah yeah
Speaker 12yeah no we need we need to celebrate our wins correct you do they don't happen often race for number one genesis runner first leg into race five number 16 unleashing oh my god last time yes into race nine number 15 skybirds are crossing over states which we can do that's the first that's the first it's not a first but it's rare yeah
Speaker 2it is rare i love that interstate parlay two and three it's in operation this week as well gator so we'll have to get a quality like the pools will be
Speaker 12enormous you should have seen me out on the sydney harbour yesterday just just so shirt off shirt off oh yeah yeah no like yeah no shirt and tie but it quickly shedded for this thing i promote the one pool should be awesome
Speaker 2so this was the obviously it's a new look sky racing they tell me with the promos and all that so you're part of that yeah
Speaker 12i just think it was a bit of a promo photoshoot but i haven't seen the finished product yet they told me it was awesome so who am i to who am i to argue with that
Speaker 2you go for a run along the shores of manly
Speaker 12well manly's a hike from darling harbour but um yeah no just just a local there yeah a lovely morning it was i've got a lot of i used to frown on a lot of time for sin city these days yeah a
Speaker 2lot of people when i go to manly my own my old hometown um a lot of people tell me that they see the gator um not the gator not the gator of the water kind in the city but the gator of the see, but the gator running, of course. alongside the beachfront there at Manly. So there you go.
Speaker 12Flash of light at 5.30 pace.
Speaker 2You can't go anywhere. On the other side of it, it's up to you. The select is here to ask the coach a question about this weekend's racing. You can join that conversation on 0499 736 736 on the Garrods Horse and Hound text line. So more from David Gately next here on Giddy Up. I think after we do these shows, we're on YouTube at the moment on SEN Track. So we just started that up again. So you can watch the means test, the Wednesday agenda, Gator's game plan, Giddy Up stable mail, Mark Hunter's, the Hunter's Edge, and also the weekend. So all of those shows and segments will be up on our YouTube channel on SEN Track that we've got up and running once again. So if you missed the show on racing.com or on any of our podcast channels, you can sit back and watch it on YouTube as well. Let's get to the questions. 0499 736 736 for Gator on this Thursday for Gator's game plan. Hey, Gator, I like Attica and the Epson. You give him a big chance, don't you, Gator?
Speaker 12Yeah. He's a key winning hope. This is his first prep as a gelding, of course. And he was quite good first up with his big weight and was safely held in the autumn by Autumn Boy. But now Gelder blinkers back on 1600. Yeah, fourth top rider in the quaddie.
Speaker 2And what about plaintiff in the premier? Can he cause a bit of an upset? That's from Winkers.
Speaker 12Gee, I thought they'd go to Flemington, drawn wide, the swoop, wet track, in a race full of holes and question marks. But they've decided on the tougher assignment, the premier stage. I think she's ready to win. It's just, I don't think it's her race. But who am I to argue with that?
Speaker 2Cosmic Crusader in the Turnbull. Love soft ground. What's your thoughts there, Gator? That's from Mickey.
Speaker 12Well, he keeps running really well. So, you know, he was terrific in the Memsie against the Patton. A couple of dynamite wins before that. And he was very good in the Underwood. But he just found one better. Birdman, back on dry ground, ridden closer. He was clear second best and ran well again. I don't know what the knock is on him. I don't have any reason to doubt him at 2,000 metres. Look, in my humble, I think he'd love a soft rather than a very heavy. But he's in the quad fourth pick.
Speaker 2Question for Gator. Thoughts on Sue Sensation in the last beat and most of these with more weight last prep when flying. Went to Brisbane, underwhelming. And two underwhelming runs. This prep. Out to 1,400 metres. Seams over as in the last. Troy Causton. I reckon Paulie Sebastiani, if I can recall. I reckon Troy gave Sue Sensation a good push there yesterday.
Speaker 12Yeah, so I think the key to Sue Sensation is 1,400 metres. Yes. I'm not totally convinced about a heavy track. And that's my query. Add to that. He's not exactly. He's not exactly flying either. So I've got some question marks. I mean, he's 20 to 1 for probably a reason. At his best, he's probably, what, a $6 chance in that way.
Speaker 2Yeah. I think the big question mark is Paulie Sebastiani just kindly reminded me is that, and you just brought that up as the heavy going. If that does eventuate there at Flemington with Sue Sensation. Hi, G. What about Autumn Boy? He had a gut busting run at Flemington two weeks ago and now travels back up to Sydney for the Epsom. Are you, are you at all worried that that hard run plus the interstate flight trip might flatten him? I thought it was a confidence boosting run there at Flemington the other day, Gator.
Speaker 12Yeah, look, I agree with you. He was saved for one run and ran home strongly. What was that? Just an even tempo. So I think it was the perfect run, really. You know, I take the listener on board that anytime you compete a group one level against superstars like Cheesley and Alaba, it's going to take something out of you. But this stable, no issues traveling. The horses, this horse himself traveled interstate, might have caught the guinea. So I'm fine with him.
Speaker 2Gator, I followed Platinum Pantheon, the Kiwi through the Brisbane Carnival. He turns up in the last race in Sydney. Zach Lloyd jumps on. I think he is promising. Your thoughts? That's race 10, horse number 10 there at Randwick Saturday.
Speaker 12Yeah, so that could have easily been a long division race itself. Gee, there's a number of horses you can make a case for. And hence, we've gone for a couple of value, runners in Nepo Baby and even Navy Pilot. They're both around 20 to 1. I think Platinum Pantheon is in the game. I'm not, look, I think longer than 1,200 would be helpful. I'm not overly concerned about the gate, certainly by race 10, a chance.
Speaker 2I see Pete, he's obviously handed the reins over to Graeme Hinton. Maybe you can talk to Graeme to try and stop these benchmark class races there at Randwick for you there, Gator.
Speaker 12No, we could have a chat, I'm sure, if you listen to me. If you listen to me, I'm not.
Speaker 2Yes, yes, good luck. G'day, Garth and Gator. Gator, what are your thoughts on Skewer in the Superimposed? Decent odds for a horse you'd think would eat up the trip. Your thoughts there on Skewer? Geez, it was a good push from Jack Turnbull.
Speaker 12Yeah, Skewer. That's in race
Speaker 2number three, yeah, the Superimposed.
Speaker 12Alrighty. I'll tell you while I'm looking, searching my notes, who I've got on top. And it's a horse called Aragog, who was terrific last. Last time, and just didn't quicken, but built speed late. I think we'll eat the extra trip. As for Skewer, I liked the win at Seamall. Five weeks between runs, stepping to 1600 start three. There's a stack of upside. You go back to the debut, he's beating a horse called Something's Burning. So, gee, that ties in nicely. Yeah, one of many I can make a case for in the Superimposed, what a horse he was.
Speaker 2Yes, he was one hell of a horse. He was one hell of a horse in the Superimposed. It's 9.52, we're going to take a break. We'll come back with more of your questions with Gator for Gator's Game Plan. Great to have your company on this Thursday morning. David Gately is with me for Gator's Game Plan. We're going through your questions. Asking our coach a question about this weekend's racing to help us back a winner on Saturday, Gator. I also want to know about Athelwolf. Now, we don't know where he's going. They're going to make a decision late today, Gator, whether they go to the Bark Cummings or the Metrop. They want to come to the Bark Cummings, but they don't want it to be too wet. So, probably they might stay in Sydney, but who knows?
Speaker 12Yeah, we'll wait and see. I mean, you know, I certainly see where they're coming from given the trepidation around the. the. forecast, you know, and there's no governance that they have to do it yet.
Speaker 2No, yes. But you can understand where the owners are coming from. You leave that decision to the last minute, really. Yeah, no, fully. Fully understand, yep. Yep. But it's not great for the punters trying to work out what's happening.
Speaker 12But anyway. Well, I mean, the sport. the owners would be running for $4.50 each Saturday if there were no punters. And. Stick of chewing gum.
Speaker 2Yep. 80% of the revenue is from the punters, basically, for these PRAs. So, you make a really good point there, Gator. Eliana's only won two Open Weight for Age Group 1s. The Ranford was a jogging sprint and the Tancred, she beat a nine-year-old. And Wallace Day, she is a good horse. But is she an elite weight for age horse, Gator? That is the question, according to one of our listeners.
Speaker 12It's a valid argument. I mean, we would have got a great guide in last year's Cox Pay, wouldn't we? Yeah. But she just didn't have any luck. So, yeah, I think we're going to learn something. I think those points are salient. Obviously, she's beating Serdelius, though. You know, and it's not as if Dubayana was going poorly. He's a world-class athlete himself. So, you know, she's tested all them glow as well, hasn't she? So, look, I think she's really good. But it's getting really close to time to stand up and be good.
Speaker 2What about stipulation in the manifold? That regular ambition form looks good.
Speaker 12Yeah, I think she's way over the odds here. I think they went up double-figure odds in a couple of agencies. I liked the debut of St. Lee Dancer, Platinum Pearl. That obviously ties in. And the form's been well-ranked. And they're just no match for regular ambition. That horse, of course, beat Pretty Baby last week. It was coming off a triumvirate of a terrific win. So, look, she's a Frankel filly. I think getting the 6,900 on the up. I'm really happy to play her in the race. Conceived, there's plenty of dangers. But I think she's a great player.
Speaker 2So, that's stipulation. And the manifold there at Flemington. We'll take a break. It's quickly approaching 9.58. And then we've got a 30-minute period there where we can ask Gator any question we want. So, join our conversation, 0499 736 736, on the Garrett-Hawson-Hound text line.
Speaker 1I'll see you next time.
Speaker 2Gareth Hall, David Gately with you for Gator's Game Plan. It's right on 10 o'clock. Hosted text messages coming through, so we'll try our very best to get to all of them in the next 30 minutes. Let's kick off with Mona Leeseworth and each way ticket and race five in Sydney, their Gator.
Speaker 12Well, she's pretty hard to knock given she keeps on winning and she's building this fabulous record at 1600. She just strikes a couple of really quality mares still on the up in the prep and she's deep into the prep, but she only has a little knock. And I'm pretty keen on unleashing in that race with no weight. But yeah, she's impossible to knock.
Speaker 2Beautiful. Hi, Gareth and Gator. Call me crazy, but what are your thoughts on the 13 new looking race seven at Flemington? Do you know what? I love the way you're thinking here, Heather, that is. We'd love to hear from you because we do love to hear from you. We do love to hear from you, but put your name to it as well. It was horrible last week, but on a quick backup, getting to its optimal distance and it does love a wet track. This will be a big improver and we're getting odds to find out, Gator. Your thoughts there on you? Look, I don't know what price I'm getting there with bet 365, but I'll have a look now.
Speaker 12Yeah, look, the best is good enough. The two runs back have been nothing, anything resembling good, you know? That's the query. How do you trust the horse to turn it around? The wet track can certainly help, but this horse was good enough to beat. Juju Kubu and Campaldino last prep and was right on the heels of Mr. Monaco. So all the form ties in if he's back to his best.
Speaker 2So that's $126 there with bet 365 new look. It was going to be, I remember when it won that lead up race to the Sydney Cup in the autumn and all it needed was a heavy track and it didn't get it. I think that's when he shows his best on a track that is bottomless. And he might get that at headquarters there on Saturday. So there you go. You could take the pun of a dollar each way on him. Morning, Gareth. When it comes to handicaps like the Epsom, does Gator place more emphasis on barriers or weight? Would he prefer a higher weighted horse with a better barrier over a lightweight horse with the worst barrier? That's a good question from Murph.
Speaker 12Yeah, so historically you can certainly win. From Widegate, Epsom and Doncaster. You know, there's generally fast speed. Generally, they have the rail true for these meetings and you can run on. You know, obviously, not obviously, but historically, recent history says the inside rail and the rails short round because in the A1 spot, they get off the fence. So I tend to gravitate A to the better athlete and then let the other stuff fall in behind. But this race in particular just has a great profile for four-year-olds. I know what the boys do on one, which I don't. Absolutely love. No. But we've got a good pilot.
Speaker 2And we're giving a couple of double passes away today as well for Flemington on Saturday. So Pauli Sebastiani, he's right on the ball when it comes to the better questions. So he'll decide who will get that double pass to Flemington on Saturday afternoon. How many double passes have we got? Two to give away. Terrific. AG unit, a couple for Gator with a bit of rain around in Sydney. I like a couple with lightweights. And Chispert with 50 kilos looks over. Is it 20 to 1 in race 5, Gator? Your thoughts there?
Speaker 12Chispert, that's. That's Chris Wallace
Speaker 2or Screamer claims too. So it gets him with 50 over the 1,600.
Speaker 12That's that benchmark 94 with unleashing in it, Noblest, Polymenia. I think the problem for Chispert is it's just a better race than a 94. It's probably a bottom-end stakes race even with the depth to it. But, yeah, not the worst.
Speaker 2No. What about Mitch also from Bathurst? Good on you, Mitch. Thanks for listening. The Clichy Boulevard. He reckons this horse can run a mighty race in the Epsom.
Speaker 12Look, I've seen plenty worse 50 to 1 pops. I'll give you that. That was a really soft win last time. Is she a length off some class-wise? Yes. But that handicap brings her back into it with no weight, doesn't it? So, yeah, again, far from the worst.
Speaker 2Hey, Gator and Gareth, what's the knock on Savvy Halley? She hit back. Well, last start after pulling up lame. And she's nearly beaten Tempted earlier on in the year. You're now getting nearly $4 the place and 20s to win. And she loves it wet. I know that they thought she was an Everest horse. And if she runs in the top three on Saturday, she will be in the Everest. She'll represent Mulberry. So, yeah, it'll be interesting to see how she goes.
Speaker 12Yeah, it will. Look, she was back to her best last start, obviously. And she beat a decent field. Ran a good time, 188 there. She tested Tempted last prep and was gallant in defeat, wasn't she? But that was 1,400 on a soft six. So, I think back to 1,200, it's clearly advantage Tempted.
Speaker 2But, look, she's a big price. Has Gator taken a Caulfield-Melbourne Cup double this year? I know a few people have Saran at 100 to 1. Unfortunately, I'm not one of them. That's from Mervyn Swervin.
Speaker 12Yeah, I have. We've done a couple of preview shows and identified my double. So, they're alive still. They haven't lost yet. If they run, certainly, you've taken the overs there because he'll head to the race and run well in it, I'm sure.
Speaker 2And the horse that you've taken your double with, Wine Dark Sea. Landed in the country. That's a good start. Yeah, that's a good start. That's always a relief. Thank God. It's past the CT scan and it's here. And you get D-Lane who rides. Yeah, not upset about that. The Euphrates Gator. What are your thoughts? What's on him? Too much weight, question mark?
Speaker 12Look, it's not easy with 59, is it? But I think he's a really good horse to offset that. He held on well against the A-graders first up. Tripped way too short. Then they let him run last time. Loved that. And that really suited him. He's got a good depth of endurance, hasn't he? I mean, he's like 3,500, hasn't he? Yeah. I think he can win, but Atherbrook's the key to the race.
Speaker 2And what is Gator's best? It's Genesis Runner Race 4, number one in Sydney there on Saturday for the Freedmen's. Yep. So there you go. And don't forget this Saturday with Bet365, we'll be paying an extra 10% on top of the National Tote Dividend on all tote bets in every race at Flemington, Randwick, Eagle Farm, Murray Bridge and Kalgoorlie. That's win, place, quinellas, exactors, trifectas, first fours and quaddies. That's that extra 10% on top. Eligible customers only. Terms and conditions apply. What are you really gambling with? Hey, Gator in the Dane Hill, it's a beauty. Do you take a hard-fit natural fling down the straight potentially on a testing track or the next episode first up?
Speaker 12It looks like I've tipped natural fling on top. She obviously blipped them first up, ran great time. And I thought she was good in the moyer. You know, they were saying, you know, some good judges were saying she's vulnerable back at 1,000 and not quite seasoned enough. I was like, nah, I'll tip her anyway. I think that's fine. Turns out they were right, you know, and I was wrong. Because she's. She ran well, but Jamie Mellon got up and said, yeah, she's just not quite seasoned enough and back to 1,000 didn't suit. So, anyway, we learned something. Overexcited to danger. I think she's a really, really good filly. She'll need to be to beat natural fling. But her run at Flemington Chasing, Sotono Glow, at the start number two, gap third. That third horse was Scintillation. That's the horse the natural fling beat first up in the Croisette. The next episode is hard to load up on the trials. But the last time he clashed with natural fling, he beat her easily.
Speaker 2Yeah. He'll love a heavy track as well. Even though he's first up, he's the son of Scintillation that just relished those conditions. He'll be a better horse. And talking to Calvin McEvoy yesterday, I think he has. He's admitted that he will be a better horse on a heavy track than natural fling. So, you're getting 440. Whether the fitness for natural fling will be the difference, time will tell. But, yeah, he's an interesting horse the next episode. So, if you forget about those two trials in Sydney, you'd probably. He'd be favourite, clearly, but. Yep. No doubt. Yeah. Sam Friedman was interesting, Garda. He reckons the fillies are as good as the colts.
Speaker 12Well, they keep running faster times.
Speaker 2Yeah. That's usually a good sign. Yes. And Boobay. We'll see how good a judge Zara is, because he's jumped off the ride the next episode. Yeah, he has. And if you watch. If you watch those jump outs, pocket full of cash. Is he a big price at $21?
Speaker 12Yeah, fourth pick for me. He trialled with natural fling and matched motors with her. Given a little bit of a niggle, but nothing major. And I bet the next episode, seven lengths in the heat. It's just a trial, but he looked great.
Speaker 2And Doubt Time's that horse that Nick Ryan, The Connections, pulled off that plunge with on the boo there at Caulfield. Could you have him at $34?
Speaker 12Oh, look, I'm never going to pot one at 33 to 1, because you can't win either way. But I would mark him a similar price.
Speaker 2Yep. G'day, Gareth and Gator. Can Deacon run a place in the Turnbull? He's going to. Sydney. Sydney, yeah. That's from Gary from Mildura. Great place, Mildura, Gaz. Love it. I grew up there, so I should love it. Morning, Gareth and Gator. Does the great man think tempted is a put-in take-out job on Saturday? That's from Scotty from Wall's End. Hey, Scotty. Yeah.
Speaker 12Yeah, look, I don't think she's immoral, but I think she's probably going to be most people's top pick, given that brilliant change-up speed first up. And she beat Hedwall, who then went to the Mazu race, and that was a bit of a barrier trial. But I think it's an advantage here, 1,200, over 1,000. So happily on top, but again, a few for the quaddie.
Speaker 2Chris Waller has Beside the Ocean at, what, $17 with Bet365 in the Rose of Kingston on Saturday. Do you give her a chance if she gets into the field? She's the third emergency. There's a chance that she will with a heavy track.
Speaker 12Yeah, I agree with that, and I think the horse is absolutely flying. Whether or not she can win a group two Rose of Kingston set-based penalties remains to be seen. But going well without luck, that horse.
Speaker 2The Dane Hill tip you just heard, Gator there, he's with Natural Fling over-excited there, and the Dane Hill, so he's with the fillies. Jake goes, hey, guys, I like doing more place multis. I'm wondering Gator's thoughts on this. I like this. Cabriol top 10. Gold Coast Bell top 10. Aleana top 7. Ten Commandments top 9. Well, you'd be disappointed if you didn't get that multi, Jake, I reckon.
Speaker 12I agree with your statement, yep.
Speaker 2Yeah, I don't know what price you would get there. Let us know, Jake. Autumn, because that reads well. That's a big cushion, top 10. Yes, top 10. Autumn lover in race four at Flemington seems prime for $1,600. Blink is on. And on the. The form from her last race seems very strong.
Speaker 12That's giant. Yeah, and I agree with all of that. I mean, it's just such a tough race, isn't it? But it's going to come down to who's there. So, look, if Atherwolf isn't there, Jujubee, I heard they're leaning to Sydney, are they? Yeah, that's it. And a couple of others, I think Giant won't handle the heavy. So, yeah, you know, it may fall away, and that brings those horses into it.
Speaker 2Could you please ask Gator what track conditions he set his tips at? So, heavy. He's a slow track at Flemington and a good to slow track at Randwick. Happy? Yeah. Thoughts on Lady Shenandoah on the Epson. Surely runs a big race. That's from Sam from Manly. Good on you, Sammy boy. If she wins an Epson, I'll. That'll do me.
Speaker 12Well, you can make a case. I mean, she was right with Idlefly last prep. Yeah. And she ran well in the Ripper Clark. Probably not in the A-plus ground. So, she's eighth top-rated runner for me. But what that's worth. Would you put her in your quaddie? I'm probably not going to go that wide. I'm probably not going to go to eight. But I wouldn't faint if she won, but I'd lose.
Speaker 2Shovel, who's one of the shovel techs in a lot. He's Maggie Payne's old man. Maggie works at Flemington. He's one of the greatest farmers ever seen, basically, out near the Riverina, Gator. I don't know if he could handle the Mallee, but he's a good man, Shovel. I might give him. I might buy a few head of sheep he can sell for me. I wouldn't make a farmer, but you probably would, Gator. He wants to know about Arangog, that colt by Dundeele and the Yulong Colours for Tommy and Philip Stokes, who goes around the Superimposed on Saturday.
Speaker 12Yeah, look, it feels like manual labour, but I see what you're saying. Fully suit me. A singlet would be okay. Look, I'm going with Arangog on top in the Superimposed, and he just didn't quicken in the expert play, but his last 100 was really good. I know he was a big prize. Yeah. But he beat Hunter. Last week's Quinella. Diameter, something's burning. I think he looks desperate for 1800. Nine bucks, thereabouts. Good value play.
Speaker 2Tough race. Good morning, guys. Can I please ask Gator if Greenspaces is cooked, or is he now at the right trip in the Metropolitan of Sydney on Saturday? That's from David from Lakes Entrance.
Speaker 12G'day, David. Yeah, look, I'm giving him another go. I just wonder if they stayed at that middle distance one run too long. He didn't finish off as well as I'd hoped, and now he gets. He's to the 2400, so back. You know, I'm giving him another go.
Speaker 2G'day, G-Train. Morning, gents. Probably should be asking Hunter about this whole scene as though it's his love child in Barclay Square. He does love Barclay Square. He knows that horse well. He gets him on his right day, Barclay Square. Can he win on Saturday?
Speaker 12Depends who's in the race. Yeah. So, you know, with those, the backcomings, we'll reference those who are still dual acceptors. If a few of them scratch. But the advantage for Barclay Square is clearly the rain, you know. You'd think there's a couple of these he just wouldn't be overly competitive with on bone-dry ground, but he was wide and good last start. I mean, he's a good roughy, asterisks on who's there.
Speaker 2All right, then, well written. Crowman reckons she's a moral. Where have you got her in the Epsom Gator?
Speaker 12Second top-rated runner. Obviously, she's unbeaten. The form behind her keeps standing up. She's run for time to back her up. She's not brilliantly weighted, but I think she fits the profile.
Speaker 2Four-year-old, second pick. We thought we were smart when we did the future show. We rang Steve Marsh. We'll go, oh, we got the over $7. She was into $4, $3.50 straight after that. Then Chris Wallach, well, who knows if they changed their mind, but he indicated that they're going back to Melbourne after his second there in the Bikabi Divas. So he became favourite. She's now $5 or $6. So we'll probably get $7 again on Saturday for well-written. The great game. Yeah. 15 minutes past 10, we'll take a break. More of your questions with David Gately on the Garrett-Sawson-Hound text line 0499-736-736 to join our conversation this Thursday morning.
Speaker 1Text us on 0499-736-736.

And don't forget this Saturday with Bet365, they'll be paying an extra 10% on top of the National Tote Dividend on all tote bets in every race at Flemington, Randwick, Eagle Farm, Murray Bridge, and Kalgoorlie. That's win, place, quinellas, exactors, trifectas, first fours, and quatties. Let's continue on with the questions for Gator. Hey, G, can you ask Gator who he thinks is more upside, Mbube or Big Sky?
Speaker 12They both looked in need of the run to me, first off. Mbube was quite sort of soft over there. He was a little bit over the line, but he was close up. They crossed the line together. Big Sky first up off a long break. You'd think he'd be much fitter as well. So the problem with that race is that the girls over Excited's race was just significantly faster.
Speaker 2Yeah. So who's better, Mbube or Big Sky?
Speaker 12Who's better? Yeah. Look, if I had to pick one going forward, it would be Big Sky, probably, but it's not something that I'll have to worry about.
Speaker 2No, that's a good point. But Pete worries about it. That's why I asked you. Good on you, Pete. I know Jack Turnbull was great with his tips last week, but naming a race after him, really? That's from Scotty. He tipped over. Everyone should have a name raced after them if they're tipping 80 to 1 multis. Morning, guys. Just interested in David's thoughts on the criminally underestimated King of Rousseau
Speaker 12at $60. He's been a damn good horse to me, that thing. He is underrated criminally. It's a hot race, though, for him. I think there is another good race in him. I'm just not sure he can beat these.
Speaker 2New Look's question was from Lucas from Carrum. Yeah, love the show, lads. Good on you, Lucas. You know what, Lucas? You've talked me into having $1 each whale on New Look, so I appreciate that. Morning, Gareth. Flemington Saturday looks a lottery because of the weather. I usually bet on Melbourne opening prices. Can't do it with this meet. Found Gold Coast Bell, nothing else. What is Gator's confidence level for the day? That's from Baz.
Speaker 12Yeah, look, there is some trepidation, obviously, given the reasons you've outlined. Yeah. We're just not 100% sure what we're dealing with, even final fields. We don't know yet. We certainly don't know any track pattern, although the track's been playing well of late. So I'm a little nervy, but always quietly confident because you've done the work.
Speaker 2About the flight stakes, the flight stakes is the final league of the Princess Series. Do you trust the fillies who have been racing hard all spring to run out a strong 1600? Are you looking for a horse arriving fresh, specifically for this race? There's not too many to choose from in this year's flight stakes.
Speaker 12No, and they all come through the same race, don't they? So, yeah, it's sort of the cards are there in front of you. I think sometimes you've just got to trust what you see. And it's not as if they're deep in the prep, Global Gallop, Striking Alibi. They're only hitting this third up, aren't they? So, happy that way, Global Gold on top.
Speaker 2Yeah, I'm with Bangkok Hottie. She just keeps on getting the job done. I was having a laugh with Luke Ferney because they sold that horse to the connections of Chris Wallace, Striking Alibi. And he thought he did pretty well out of it. Now he thinks he sold it too cheap. Sure. It's a great game. Great story, Gareth. Appreciate that. Yep. Hi, Gareth. It's Tommy C., the Burnley Street Bandit. Good on you, Tommy boy. I'm a big on unleashing and own a few shares. She'll be winning this Saturday. You bloody heard it first. Good on you, Tommy. You've got her on top, haven't you, Gator? Yeah, it's one of your best, yeah.
Speaker 12strength. I think she should have won last time. I think she was a run.
Speaker 2One of many things I love about Gator's analysis is his ability to intertwine form with runners. I've always wondered though, how far back does Gator look? Does he go back one or two preps or even further?
Speaker 12Yeah, look, obviously as you go further back, it's a longer history. So I think we touched on it earlier. You do need to evolve and adapt as we go. What can often happen with these athletes is they can just become more adept on certain types of track than they were as younger athletes. I've seen it a thousand times. It's still part of the puzzle, sure, but recent history tends to win out more often than older history.
Speaker 2Do you think Barrier 6 will suit Moby Dick? Now the track is going to be wet. He still is trying to get out at Mornington. That's from Ross.
Speaker 12No, he was luckless last time. Good old Moby. Yeah, but gee, I'm loathe to put anything after Jimmy Stardust turned into Farlap again.
Speaker 2Yeah, he was good, Jimmy boy. I wonder if they're going to. Are you announcing that he's going to be your slot horse? Surely he's going to go with the Tab.
Speaker 12I haven't heard. The phone's been on, but no call.
Speaker 2Well, it's a difficult one as the coach there of the Tab side regarding the Everest. It's sort of you dropped him, didn't you? You had your meeting with him. He said you didn't want him, and now you've got to pick up the phone and say, oh, mate, I might have went off too early.
Speaker 12I love you again. When you're quiet for the job, you left and come back. Yeah. What's that called?
Speaker 2That's the coach. That's why you get paid the big bucks as the coach,
Speaker 12obviously. But yeah, it's like going back in the twos and having 40. You're back in the good books.
Speaker 2Yeah, 100%. Yeah. Headwall has to be a huge chance at the prize. Second up rated down off a huge layoff, but Fresh arguably should have beaten Tempted. We'll rate up again third up. That's from Chunk from Maryborough in Victoria. Good on you, Chunk.
Speaker 12Yeah, look, I think this should be a proper race. The last one wasn't. Yeah. And he did test Tempted first up. All these are facts. 1,200, no issue.
Speaker 2Morning, Gareth. Jake the Rattlesnake here. Why isn't Bangkok Hottie not favourite? Leads and wins. I totally agree with you. There's not too many believers with Bangkok Hottie. There's a few of the other experts on Giddy Up that laugh at me when I tip her. But we've always had the last laugh with her, I reckon. Yeah. No, the last two you have.
Speaker 12Not always, but she's good last time. I think the win had a lot of merit. If you're sitting up second and you're going 46 and a half versus 100 and you still win, I think the win has the real
Speaker 2merit. Yep. Back Valley at King last year after his Newcastle Cup run. Jewel acceptor, wet or dry. Place chance in Melbourne Gator. Also home rule in the last. That's from Billy.
Speaker 12Home rule Bob's up every now and then loves it. Where there's a positive for a home rule. What was the other horse?
Speaker 2It was valiant King. We haven't seen the best of him for a while. It's hard to come in. Yeah. I like the setup of Attica, but will he handle a heavy track Gator? I don't think you'll get a heavy heavy.
Speaker 12No, it's not going to be heavy. It doesn't rain in Sydney.
Speaker 2Be fine. No. Few of the rival few of Attica's rivals. I've been having a chat too. And when I've asked them, what horse are you scared of most? They say Attica with no weight on his back.
Speaker 12Mm. Yeah. Blinkers on.
Speaker 2Yeah. Correct. Any thoughts on Astral Flame at 19 to one in the Rose of Kingston? Well, yeah.
Speaker 12Been competitive with a few of these in the past. So you'd think has a case. Yeah. I think we'll go forward. We'd love an on-speed pattern.
Speaker 2Morning Gareth. If Gator had to compare his football ability to a current racehorse, who would it be? I'm thinking pride of Jenny just leads from the front, runs through the pain barrier and breaks the opposition. Hearts. Geez, that's a fair compliment to be compared to pride of Jenny.
Speaker 12Yeah. No, good call.
Speaker 2You might win the double pass for Flemington if he keeps that up, Merv.
Speaker 12Yeah. No, keep the keep the ego problems. I keep them coming. Um, I was thinking more that horse that there was a hurdler back in the day and he he did a bit of racing on the flat country cups. His name was he's a knob.
Speaker 2Okay. Hi, guys. Love your show. Does Gator give Mr Monaco a chance in the Metropolitan?
Speaker 12Um, yeah, look, I do. He's beaten with steel in the past. Yeah. Probably a bit luckily, but um, he made ground in the Kingston town. He won a manual cup set up last prep on what granny beat a horse called Juju Akiba, who's who's much shorter in the market. So there's a case.
Speaker 2Yeah. Harry from Aubrey. G'day, Harry. Saintly dancer, a chance on Saturday. Flemington race four. Well, um, Harry, Jack Turnbull says that she doesn't want it too wet, basically.
Speaker 12Okay. Yeah. I think she struggled a bit in the Atlantic jewel on that shifty, but she wasn't in the best part of the track either. Um, but I have similar concerns.
Speaker 2Hey, I want to back half yours, but I can't back him now because of that gate.
Speaker 12Hmm. Let's see how the track's fine. You know, if, um, let's see how the track's playing. It's going to be the key to
Speaker 2that. Um, Josh, your thoughts on St George and the Turnbull, especially at a barrier 13 and Zara not being on board.
Speaker 12Look, he's fine. Uh, a very, very wet track would significantly worry me. Um, you handle soft ground. Well, I think anything worse than I'm, I'm, I'm cautious, but he's going really well and set weights penalty. See, it's not wait for age.
Speaker 2Remember? Yeah. Um, yeah. And that's an important factor to take into consideration, go to set weights and penalties. So there's going to be some horses like a buckaroo that won't ever get this advantage until next year's Turnbull stakes over their opposition. Yeah, that's right. Yeah. Yeah. You've got to give him a chance. Don't you? Buckaroo because of that out of it by any stretch. Yeah. Wet track tick. Could you ask her if he thinks I would be taking unders at $4 and regal ambition in the thousand
Speaker 12guineas? Um, $4. Uh, I'm not sure is the short answer. The longer answer is I think she's extremely talented. I loved the win on Sunday.
Speaker 2Morning, Jane gated this guy to give skybird a hope this Saturday. If it's wet, I think it's one of your best, isn't it?
Speaker 12Yeah, I'm pretty keen on her on a wet track. Um, in a race, there's, I don't know where to start or finish, to be honest, but, um, she's the one that, uh, is well-weighted a she'll handle the wet. B was probably written too close to hot first up. I think a colder right here, which it was second up last prep. She ran jolly start or length and change. I think if she runs to that, you know, she can win a
Speaker 2Gil guy. There's going to think there's a solid tempo in the Epson to give. wolf the pattern it wants uh
Speaker 12yeah the challenge for chow office is clearly the um the 59 isn't it but he's a very good horse and his last start was that of a coming winner uh the epsom it would be a very a pretty rare occasion when these big mile races are not run at an extremely strong tempo um and i'm looking at the speed map now and uh yeah no this it looks to be genuine speed fully lit healthy matcha latte perfumist um i'm they'll run along at group one speed i'm sure jake is a
Speaker 2fellow triathlete from palm beach i love our listeners they come from all over the country the world we've had people from ireland new zealand text in today i feel like maca on a sunday um hey gareth and gator dog can la burrito overcome the wide barrier in the manifold certainly a talented horse meets a tough
Speaker 12race yeah it is a tough race um i i didn't have on my radar but um you know for a myriad of reasons but um so she'd surprise me
Speaker 2to be fair um sean wants to know about idol flyer and the epson and cole jay wants to know about mr miller and the epson oh dear
Speaker 12i've got to fly a third she was good fresh stayed at 1400 one one too long in hindsight seconder strong home latest has two kilos swing on show so i think she's in the game mr miller he's really promising isn't he he was good at newcastle against the race shape and um he can measure up with no way he's six to pick i've got five
Speaker 2minutes left gator we're going over because i've got so many questions coming through i'm not going to get all through all of them but i'm going to try our very best here we go we'll hurry up the um the process here you're ready um what's with 34 with stretton rule a huge campaign last prep and uh was unlucky fifth in the slipper huge overs your thoughts there
Speaker 12gator yeah you can make
Speaker 2a case of that yeah god's window is epson especially if the rain arrives yeah
Speaker 12best of the blowouts for me that's
Speaker 2from josh from perth good on you josh have you heard which race piggyback is going to on saturday i reckon she'll be in the bark cummings cole austin galati and smooth chino and the gill guide is going to give them a chance uh smooth chino good return with the
Speaker 1262 ran well in a clock i put him in the race not sure how wet he wants it great
Speaker 2story indy white out rocking up for the first time at flemington she's never been gator i don't think austin has either um hey boys keith from waga here does 10 commandments get it done in the wet if
Speaker 12it was 1600 he'd be one of the bets of the day 1400 backing trip has its challenges yeah i followed
Speaker 2the great man for years and i rate him incredibly highly thanks for that um i know they're talking about you gator but i think gator's resource comparison may be one of the greatest his greatest pieces of work that's from sean totally agree there hey listen to the podcast every day love the show what's gator's thoughts on columbus in the first round
Speaker 12week uh columbus yeah look went to 1800 kenzo good effort with the 59 done deals Will, four-year-old on the up, 60 kilos, the challenge, second pick.
Speaker 2Yeah. Here we go. We've got a few more coming through. The next one I want to ask you about Jigsaw. I think she goes to the Scalacci. Oh, he goes to the Scalacci. I'm pretty sure that they want to get back to Perth for a winner bottom. Hey, Gator, what's your thoughts on Pinhole and the Metropolitan?
Speaker 12Yeah, good win last start and beat a handy one in that dozen. Their ISU, I think, would be in the market here.
Speaker 2So in that second layer of chances for me. Last one. When watching the races live on what may be a track that is cutting up at Flemington, does Gator trust his eye and looking at the track itself, kick back, et cetera? Does he look at the times and judge the track conditions off that?
Speaker 12Look, I think times are important, but rain on the day can be very treacherous. I'd back the eye and see who's handling it and, and keep an eye on track pattern will be the king, I think.
Speaker 2Just recap your parlays, Gator. You've only got the one, actually.
Speaker 12It's an interstate parlay. Yeah, true that. Race one and one Genesis runner into race five, number 16, Unleashing into race nine, Flemington, number 15, Skybird.
Speaker 2You were superb last week, Gator. You got the parlay, great time of the year to really be in red hot form. We wish you the best of luck this Saturday. You'll be on the Melbourne form panel with Trav Noonan and Mark Hunter. On Saturday, and you enjoy the rest of your day, whatever you may be doing.
Speaker 12No, thank you, mate. I'm looking forward to Saturday morning and then I'll be out at Flemington Saturday. So come and stay high.
Speaker 2Where will you be? Where will you be?
Speaker 12Oh, I don't know. Wherever, out of the rain, hopefully.
Speaker 2Yes. Yes. All right then, with your shirt on, good on you, Gator. You should be doing a Cane Corns with your shirt off, I reckon. Maybe you still haven't done one of those walk and talks.
Speaker 12No, I think it's a rough head, Cane, so I'm going
Speaker 2better than that, you know? Yeah. Have a good day. Ciao. There we go. There's Gator. Hey, Pauli Sebastiani, who wins the double passes for Flemington on Saturday?
Speaker 7Well, we've got two sets of winners, so Merv for his question pertaining to the comparison of a footballer and who. So if Gator had to compare his football ability to a car racehorse, who would it be? Get that out there, Paul. Jeez, bit of a tongue tie.
Speaker 2What was the horse?
Speaker 7Pride of Jenny, and then Gator said he probably- He's a knob. Yeah, correct. Well done to Gator there, bit of self-deprecation. No, you're a knob.
Speaker 2You're a knob. Oh, thanks. Yeah. No, that was a horse, I think. Yeah. And then Pete, who asked-
Speaker 7Mr. Sebastiani, I'm
Speaker 2not calling your boy a knob.
Speaker 7Trust me, I've been called worse than that by her, mate. Don't you worry about that. And then Pete asked about Mbube or Big Skyen, who has the bigger upside as they go head-to-head at Flemington this weekend in race six. So congratulations to Pete and Merv for the double passes. Hopefully, you can get down to Flemington on Saturday. A brolly, though, from what we're hearing.
Speaker 2Yeah. We'll cross our fingers and toes. Good on you, Paulie. Thank you. The big news out of the VRC today, and we've mentioned this a few times, but Neil Wilson will be leaving his post as the chair of the VRC. He's been there for a long time, CEO chair, done a lot of great work for that famous racing club, and one of the very best administrators I've come across, and Vin Cox, he will be the man that will lead the way now with the VRC. So there you go, some big news out of the Victorian Racing Club today. 10:35. On the other side of it, we're going to come back with plenty more on this Thursday, including a few winners today with Bag of Tips.
Speaker 1Join the conversation, text us on 0499 736 736, live across Australia. The Giddy Up Bag of Tips for Oz Equipment Rentals, supplying equipment to the construction, mining, and roadworks industry. OZEquipment.com. Let's find you some
Speaker 2winners today with Bag of Tips across the three codes, all thanks to Oz Equipment Rentals, the Mighty Ultima Hotel, and Bet365. And Bet365 this weekend, they'll be paying an extra 10% on top of the National Tote Dividend on all tote bets in every race at Flemington, Randwick, Eagle Farm, Murray Bridge, and Kalgoorlie. That's Wynn Place, Quinella, Six Actors, Trifecta's First. Fools and Quatties. We're at Warrnambool today in Victoria on a soft six, the rails and the true. Race three number, excuse me, race five number three, Celibate, and race seven number 16, Crossover Kid, the tips from Benny Ascari. Paulie Sebastiani, who are you playing?
Speaker 7Ben Boosthorst, race two, number one. Warrnambool, Black Peppermint. Get on. Do you reckon? Three from three this week, we're going to go.
Speaker 2That's the aim anyway.
Speaker 7650 Bet365 customers took the $6 Venetian choice yesterday. We cleaned them up. Zachy Tunbridge was very, very happy with how all that panned out, and fingers crossed we can get the job done today in the 3,100-meter high weight benchmark 70. You're on fire, really. That's all we can do. And you have that much confidence. Cashed up, ridged it rock and roll. Seeing them beautiful. I can't wait to see them.
Speaker 13I'm excited. multis is race four number one star turn it's short but it gets the beautiful map so that would be the one that many will include in multis i'm not really tipping it at a dollar 35 but if you want something to have in the multi as that would be the one to have race six number seven harris tyrian double figures this dog around 11 this is a ludicrous price this dog's a very fast animal i know the one's got ability blue rocket ship but this dog harris tyrian maps beautifully no speed in boxes five and six minimal speed in box eight zipping alcoraz i reckon this seven can just carve across lob to a position to be too strong it was brilliant two starts ago had no luck last time out so race six number seven is a really nice chance best on the program gareth race seven number four she's mayhem up to 600 meters huge plus i've got a feeling georgie ferruge even i haven't spoke to him will be with this one as well she was massive last time out had zero luck even money looks a really nice play race seven number four then roll over to the next one over to race eight number five misty rico loves the placing you can back it each way eleven dollars and two dollars fifty and then to round out the card race nine number six five birdies around 14 or 15 dollars same thing take it each way it will settle midfield and storm home late so full book there plenty of value to be found and race seven number four is the best what
Speaker 2do you like in adelaide tonight anything that
Speaker 13stands out uh to be honest i uh haven't got to the adelaide side of form yet but there's plenty of good racing the cup heats there's five of them um i will give one tip that todd gray will be on sky racing he'll get again and can you believe yeah he's a great man tony gray he's a great man but i'm saying utter stupidity last week taking on the fastest dog in greyhound racing in wrongly accused what on earth it's a dollar ten head to head he's the fastest dog on the planet you just cannot as much as you want to tip the sa dog you just can't go again the best dog going around and he broke the track record in the process so great racing there it's going to be a cracking adelaide cup final and good luck beating wrongly accused
Speaker 2yeah bring it on he's he doesn't need to go around the heats he's he's in the final already because he won the the match race series there last week good on you mate spot on
Speaker 13mate have a great day and uh tune in tonight for anyone who wants six till 10
Speaker 2p.m yep we will uh who's on with you tonight
Speaker 13i think i've got corey smith the big fella's back i reckon so i had dame dollar last week now see smith look out what a combination that is the gang's back thanks
Speaker 2mate there we go great to catch up with um mitchy abay georgie fergie's crook as a dog he tells me so he's sent through his tips tonight at sandown race three number one ferrets knock and espawar race eight number one so three one eight one and a q2 park lance he likes race eight number four moat magic and race nine number four sweet lidet so race eight number four race nine number four time for a break on the other side of it we'll catch up with jesse gower from nzb
Speaker 1welcome back to giddy up gareth hall with you it's 10 51 it is great to have your company we're
Speaker 2heading to new zealand to catch up with jessie gower from nzb and i think she's at the property of sam beatson who's one of the superstars when it comes to the ready to run side and i think she's coming up in um auckland in the middle part of november of course the breeze ups are happening in under two weeks time now on the 12th and 13th of october at the tarapa race course and jess is with us now g'day jess hey gareth nice to see you yeah we are we're at riversley park i'm here with sam beatson and uh he's actually just been informing me that
Speaker 14he wants to be a part of the tarapa race course so i'm happy to be part of the tarapa race course so i'm happy to be part of the informing me that he was galloping the horses uh at tebrapa just this morning so we've got a very uh current update from him
Speaker 15now sam yeah so we we yeah hey gareth hey sam how
Speaker 2you going brother now you're one of the best judges i've come across which horse should we be buying from your draft and like you've never
Speaker 15let me down really yeah well you didn't buy the last one and it went okay i think it won a group two quando but um and charlotte i might have mentioned to you last time as well so um and charlotte i might have mentioned to you last time as well so yeah we've we've got a few there um so well we've got 40 46 or 47 47 catalogues so i'm sure we've got one there for you gareth yeah
Speaker 2well i'm looking for can you give us one that we should be buying maybe your top two oh i've
Speaker 15got a real expensive to sort there that we uh paid three thousand dollars for that looks like he goes very good um you know we've got all sorts uh nice day inside um we've got plenty of plenty of sort of horses for all areas uh i can't give you one in particular to be fair right now
Speaker 2yeah all right take it away jess oh well
Speaker 14actually there's a gun runner over my shoulder uh chestnut there so i think one of the things i thought was quite interesting about this catalog we've got 460 horses in the book and uh and we've uh and there are 119 stallions represented so it's uh it's a huge range and um and if you look at the 47 that that sam's got for riverside park there there's only i think there are only a couple of duplicates you know it's really um it's it's a it's a huge it's a really rangy kind of uh catalog where there's something for everyone yeah and so
Speaker 15like when you um yeah we have a broad traders sorry
Speaker 2sorry mate you're right
Speaker 15yeah we sort of try and cater for everyone have a broad range of stallions just uh obviously you know we sort of cater for australia hong kong malaysia you know we sort of cater for australia hong kong malaysia uh even the local market so we have sort of plenty of um flavor there for all sorts of buyers and um you know there's uh plenty of value to be to be bought i think so
Speaker 2sam what do we look for when we're buying these horses because obviously i think the game's changed with the way that you prepare these ready to run horses because there's a lot more data that we can take into consideration so um what do you think we need to be looking for when we watch these
Speaker 15breeze ups i think uh probably the movement you know how how easy they do it i don't think necessarily time's a big thing a lot of people like time but the way they're doing it how their action is and if they're comfortable doing it that um in their own skin um you know their temperament and things so everybody likes different but um different sorts of things so uh i think movement's probably the
Speaker 2number one yeah and so when golden 16 char wolf and you broke them in for these breeze up sales did you realize do you think that they had something special in them
Speaker 15um they both had a lot of ability but they were both quirky horses so we hadn't done a lot of galloping they both uh i think golden 60 went in with one gallop and char wolf didn't go in he didn't he had a nice strong three-quarter he didn't even have a gallop going into it but you sort of knew he uh he could do it so we we actually sort of kept him nice and quiet and doing things i think jonathan uh riddell wrote him that year and just said he hadn't had a gallop but i'm pretty sure you'll get down the straight fine what she did so yeah he's uh i think you can overdo it with them so we we take things nice and slow and educate them and on the day they sort of put their hand up
Speaker 2it's bloody exciting mate i know that you put in a lot of work for for this sale um last time maybe two years ago you broke your leg are you fitting ready to go for these breeze ups
Speaker 15oh just hanging in there getting a bit older the the body's hanging the shoulder is not so great but uh yeah no no i'm okay i think i think it's just old age gareth no you're
Speaker 2looking a million dollars in jessel um the breeze ups are on the 12th and 13th of october we can watch all of those um breeze ups there on racing.com and the nzb website and then we just got to get to the sale in november yeah exactly
Speaker 14so we we breeze we film every every one of these four 460 horses uh galloping on the straight uh at at tirapa get their times up quickly within a matter of days and and the footage as well give you all the info you need so you can really assess this catalog and have a good look at what's in it before getting down here to new zealand to actually see them at karaka and see them going through the ring on the 18th and 19th of november so just it's a sale that serves so much information and you can get a good look at what's in there and what's going on and you can get a good look at what's going on and you can get a good look at what's going on and you can get a good look at
Speaker 2We've got the Hannans today and then the Golden Saddle and Kalgoorlie Cup day on the Saturday. And for Giddy Up's WA Stable Mail, Dan Morton will be joining us. Hopefully we'll catch up with Mickey Grantham as well. He's got some key chances across the weekend. And then we've got the Thursday form show with Chris Nelson and Johnny Kelton will join us. And then Matty Reid with Tassie Time to finish off a busy show on this Thursday morning. But always great to catch up with Pete Anthonis. Hello to you, Pete.
Speaker 16Yeah, morning to you, Gareth. It's a cracking card, I'll put it that way. I reckon I've done this meeting in full probably the last six, seven years. Yeah. And this is as difficult as open a Hannans day in that time. Quite often we've had a lot of scratchings or running sort of angling towards a Saturday, but maybe dual nominated. But this card has got angles everywhere.
Speaker 2It's an interesting Hannans handicap. Could you think maybe, oh, this race might be hurt a little bit because of the golden saddle, but it's a terrific edition of this year's Hannans.
Speaker 16Yeah, it's a proper handicap as well, isn't it? It's really got it, you know, obviously Hobo West is the top weight and going down through the field, there's just a lot of horses here that wouldn't surprise if they bobbed up and ran a really nice race. So I guess trying to do the math is probably the hard part and just working out exactly how much speed is going to be in the race because you've got horses like Hobo West, Cool Memory, Avoidance, and then Fast Flickr probably just behind them. The multinationals drawn out wide and really how they run over the first couple of hundred metres will probably dictate this race. And in particular, the fancy chances, mostly correct choice and elite missile, they've just drawn that little bit awkwardly and they'll probably have to go back or at least try and find a spot in the three wide line. And look, if they are struggling to make ground, if they don't get the right tempo up front, maybe it is going to be a bit difficult for them. But look, in the end, I really thought the price for the 10 elite missile is very, very generous. We know how. We know how good this horse is, first up in particular. SJ's got a really good record taking horses to Kalgoorlie full stop. But I just think with his first up record, his trials, everything just putting it together, he deserves to be a fair bit shorter than what the market currently has him. So race seven, number 10, elite missile. I'll probably end up playing a few others in race G. Cool Memory is one. He actually SP'd favourite in this race last year in three wide for a lot of the race and really just didn't seem to take the step into the straight and then he found again late. So I think Cool Memory is probably. Probably a big price, especially if they are looking hard to run down. And Don't Wait for Luck, I think, is the best of the local chances for the Kalgoorlie train runners. So I'll probably play a few there. But Elite Missile is certainly my main play there in the Hannans.
Speaker 2Yeah, so Don't Wait for Luck, around $15. Cool Memory at $7. And Elite Missile, $7 chance there at Kalgoorlie for the Hannans. What else do you like on this program, mate?
Speaker 16Well, I think there's a few roughies throughout the card. Race eight, number eight. Gold Lily, I think, is the best of them. Double figure price, strong barrier two for Ozzy Gallardi. Didn't have any real luck there last time out. William Pike was on board. He had to go back to last offence. It wasn't a great day to be back that far. And I just think with Ozzy Gallardi jumping on from barrier two, he really should be able to hold a more forward position here. So I thought race eight, number eight, Gold Lily was your best value. And I also had something in race six, number five, playing around. It's another SJ horse, so I'm sort of a bit in love with it. It's not SJ Miller today, but, you know, that's about par for us, isn't it? Yes. But, look, just came off like a completely dead trial. Was never in the race there first up. Just got well and truly too far back. And, yes, there's probably some concern over the gate speed and early tempo. But Brad's on for the first time. If he can just hold midfield offence, I think there's genuinely good speed in this race. And I'd rather be sort of more inside than outside for a horse like this, just picking gaps through the straight. So race six, number five, playing around. It's just another horse. Around that double figure quote, I'll be having something on today.
Speaker 2Have you had a look at Saturday's feature races yet, Pete?
Speaker 16I've just started. I've finished the Golden Saddle. Yeah. And I really think the race is going to be suited by the horses on pace. That's just probably not, you know, to anyone's surprise. But we're looking at the speed map, and Lord Sheave is the obvious horse drawn wide. I like the wide barrier for him because I think he can just take his time and roll forward. But, jeez, I love the trails of cessation. I love the trails of cessation as well. I really think her SP, going back to last preparation, she was racing against horses like Oscar's Fortune, London's Image, even the preparation before. I think she was around $3.20 behind Smooth Chino. Now, if you stick Smooth Chino in this race, he's probably favourite in front of Immortal Bliss. And cessation, I think, is going any bit as well as any other horse in this field off her trials. So I think my main play will be cessation there. And, look, maybe something on Lord Sheave as well if he gets out. So just a slightly bigger price. I think $7.50 or so is about the right price now. But not really knocking Immortal Bliss, G. It's just that the map for me just looks so straightforward. Maybe a bit too obvious. But, yeah, they're the speed runners I'll be looking to play there in the Golden Saddle.
Speaker 2West Star would have to be the best horse on ability, or is he just overhyped?
Speaker 16It's hard to make a case for him off last prep. And even his trial, he was, like, under the stick. He stepped fairly away. He was under the stick a long way out behind Lord Sheave. He basically just cruised home in fast time. You're making excuses for West Star, who really hasn't put a figure on the board since that Northern States win. And then he went to Melbourne, and he just hasn't seemed to be the horse since. I know first up last prep he had, he wasn't suited, and everyone was wondering, well, how close would he have gone? He had a number of chances in the starts afterwards, and he just didn't put it together. So I'm not saying he can't win. I'm just saying it's incredibly difficult to recommend backing him at around that $8.59 mark. Based on what we've seen, the last probably five, six starts. But having said that, I think the map's probably pretty favourable for him. If I was Chrissie Barnum, I'd just be following, trying to glide across with Lord Sheave and just jam a spot in the first four. I'd much rather be on pace in that race than back in the field. So I think it will be pretty tactical, just given the fact the speed map is so obvious.
Speaker 2Can the Jester's son win over 2,300 metres in a Kalgoorlie Cup? I think that's the big question mark, isn't it, really?
Speaker 16I don't see why he can't. Yeah. You know, like, you're really looking at this. Field and Opportunistic and Lillian, he was up against last time out. And to be fair, he pretty much just beat Opportunistic on fair and square. Yeah. I don't think there was any real excuses there for the favourite. And then you're throwing in horses like, oh, Grunt, who's come from the city. There's no reason why not.
Speaker 2Yeah, it's going to be a great day there at Kalgoorlie. So it's a big couple of days. I think Peter Moody's speaking there tomorrow. So he'll be as entertaining as ever, Moots. And he's got plenty to have a chat about, of course, with She's Alibi that'll be going around as a very short-priced favourite in next Saturday's Might and Power. So, and I think Darren McCauley, he will be great there at that function there at Kalgoorlie tomorrow. What about Smoochino down the straight, Pete? He's one of the most interesting runners. Like, if he gets a heavy track, how will he handle that? I think talking to Indy Wynette today, she doesn't want it too wet for him. But this is the first time she has ever been to Flemington. On Saturday. And obviously, it's Austin Gallati's first ride at Flemington as well. So, there you go. I hope he runs a big race, Smoochino.
Speaker 16Yeah, and look, there's no reason why he couldn't. I mean, obviously, it's a very intimidating first time down the straight. But, you know, at the same time, it's not exactly, you know, it's not as if he's one of these horses that's going to get too far back and you're going to be wondering the whole time, you know, will he be able to sort of keep up or anything like that. He's clearly got a very good cruising speed. Is there a chance he gets a little bit lost? Possibly. Possibly. But at the same time, he hasn't done anything wrong in his career. So, I really think, you know, it's going to be a good kickoff spot. I always think I'd love to see these horses. There should be more races. I know the Pinjarra Straight's out of action at the moment. But I'd love to see some of our better sprinters, a listed race down the straight G, and then like giving an airplane ticket to basically say to these local trainers, right, we'll pay for your airfare to go to like the Newmarket Handicap or something like that. But give them an opportunity to find out if they can run down the straight in the first place. By opening it up. So, look, that's obviously a story for another day. But Smooth Chino, I agree. I'm looking forward to seeing how it goes. The Machinos, typically, they run pretty well in the wet. And he's got a good enough soft record. It's probably going to be a different kettle of fish, though, at Flemington, if all that rain forecast falls.
Speaker 2And he's out of a gingerbread man mare. So, they usually handle the wet pretty well, the gingerbread. So, yeah, it's, yeah, I hope he runs a big race. And then Cosmic Crusade, it's, it's interesting because Pikey was adamant that he did settle him too close there the other day. The money has come for him since the markets were open there after the final fields on Wednesday with Bet3654, Cosmic Crusader. But he gets a low gate again. And with light infantry, man, they don't like to lead on him, even though he likes to have solid tempo races. But they reckon he's a better chaser. So, like, he enjoys the pride of Jenny Australian Cup set up when he can follow her. He's got a strong pace and that's when he's at his best. So, they don't know if they want to lead. And then you get Sir Dillies, who looks the only real leader on paper. So, who knows what that tempo will be like in that Turnbull Stakes there on Saturday, which would be interesting to see where Pike does settle Cosmic
Speaker 16Crusader. Well, I mean, he doesn't really have to do too much to settle in the first probably four, five, six. But you're exactly right. It's funny that last time or that last start, wasn't it, that Pikey said that straight off and you basically go through the numbers and he's actually close. correct, like they went a little, well, they went significantly faster than I think most people would have anticipated with Lindemann there. But as you said, this race genuinely looks like it could be a bit of a hackathon. There might be a surprise leader or two. Maybe one of the stayers will fire up early, but I wouldn't want to be getting too far back. And we've seen with Cosmic Crusader, his ability to handle the wet tracks previously has not been a concern. He had those really dominant performances there at Belmont. A couple of preps back where he was able to just sit there on pace on wet tracks and really just kick away. So I think it's a great opportunity for him to test himself at the 2,000 metres. And again, it might not be a genuine 2,000, so that actually might be very suitable for a horse first time.
Speaker 2It'll be interesting to see which way he goes after this, because Bob's going to make a decision. Bob Peters, does he go to a Caulfield Cup or a Cox Plate? It is moving day here at Flemington. There's a few horses in a similar spot to Cosmic Crusader. So yeah, I think Bob goes, well, if I can't beat Sir Delius, then at weight four, set weights and penalties, then how am I going to beat him at weight four eight? So I might go down that Caulfield Cup
Speaker 16path. Yep, which makes a lot of sense, doesn't it? I think Sir Delius has probably got the most upside out of all of those runners in the Turnbull, because he just didn't look to have the fitness on his side first up. He really threw it away there late. But yeah, we'll find out a lot there from that race, I'm sure. Looking forward to getting out there.
Speaker 2He's a yard watcher too, Sir Delius. He's, as Adrian Bott pointed out this morning on Giddy Up Stable Mail, he does expect him to parade a lot better. He looked like he was way over the top, didn't he, there on Maccabi-Deva Stakes Day. So it'll be interesting to see how he does parade.
Speaker 16Plenty of water to go under the bridge between now and then, Jay. We'll both literally and figuratively believe we'll see how much rainfall from the next 24 to 48 hours. But I think there's a chance that some of them might actually miss Flemington. But anyway, that's just watching the radar and trying to anticipate it. But we'll see what happens.
Speaker 2Let's hope SJ Miller has a big day on the opening day of the
Speaker 16Kalgoorlie Carnival. Yeah, fingers crossed, Jay. All the best to everyone going out there. Should be a cracking few days there at
Speaker 2Kalgoorlie. Good on you, Pete. There's Pete Anthonis. 12 minutes past 11. We'll continue on with the Thursday Form Lounge next here on Giddy Up. It's 14 minutes past 11. Great to have your company this Thursday morning as we continue on our Thursday Form Lounge. Racing action continues every day across the Sunshine State. Check out racingqueensland.com.au for where Queensland is racing today. And Chris Nelson joins us. We're at Eagle Farm Saturday. Hello to you, Chris.
Speaker 17Good morning to you, Gareth. Good morning to everyone. We are at Eagle Farm on Saturday. The weather should be fine. The track will be good and a four and a half metre rail, which is a good rail position for Eagle Farm. They tend, when it's a little further in, they do tend to steer away from the fence. So this is a pretty fair spot, I would say.
Speaker 2Where do we start with your plays, mate,
Speaker 17on Saturday? No better place to start than race one, and that is with number two, Mercado. Now, Richard Lamming had a couple in here, the scratch pack fair left with Mercado. Gee, I thought both runs have been good this prep. First up, third at Ipswich, behind Ashkirk. That's a good form. That's a good form line. Ashkirk came out and won the Toowoomba Guineas last week. And then third at the Gold Coast behind, we own a Chevy, which is a good form line, too. That horse is very promising and going well. Now, I love the ground that Mercado made late there. That was 1,400 metres. He goes to 1,500 metres on Saturday and we've lost a couple, as I said, so a small field. I did check the prices earlier, but they might have shortened this one up with scratching. So, anyway, I think it'll win. I think it'll be a good start to the day. Any winner, a good winner. Race one, number two, Mercado. Yeah. Race three, horse number one, Global Eclipse. Now, they did scratch this one from the fourth race. Right move. I think the 1,800 metres is ideal. Second, first up at Ipswich, behind Metaphorically. It was no match, but did close late ground and then Metaphorically came out and won at the Gold Coast on Pink Ribbon Day. Then went to Doombin and won convincingly. I thought that was a really good win. He sat wide all the way. He went for a home at the top of the straight, Martin Harley, and he kept going. And look, they were closing on him late, but he did a pretty good job having done all that work. Now, you need to draw nicely at the 1,800 metres start at Eagle Farm, and he's done that in gate two, and I don't see a lot in the opposition. So, I think he'll be winning. Race three, number one, Global Eclipse. Beautiful. They both look good bets. Bit of value. Race five, horse number four, Dark Arts for Tony Golan and Emily Posman. Ran fifth at the Gold Coast behind Berezka. Strata Verena was in that race. Also in this one, also. Sorry, too many alsos there. Also in this race. I think Dark Arts can turn the tables. Dark Arts can turn the tables. Meets Strata Verena a kilo better at the weights, and just strips fitter, and I just think he's peaking now. I thought that run was good against the tempo-making ground, so we'll go with Dark Arts each way. That's race five, number four. And this horse in the last, Graham, I thought he's a pretty good price. He's come up around the $3 mark in most of the markets. He's going for seven straight, if you can believe that. We don't see that very often. Now, his last start went in doom, but he went to 11.10 for the first time. He was very strong to the line. He won by two and a half lengths. I think the step to 1,200 metres is not an issue on Saturday. Bally Youngberry again rides, takes three off. I think he'll be winning again. Just draws beautifully, maps beautifully, and he's a horse in form, and he still looks to be going really well this prep. Well, he obviously is going for seven straight, so I'm sticking with him to bring us home winners in the last race, 10, number five.
Speaker 2Are we tipping Polyglot?
Speaker 17No, I'm not tipping Polyglot. He's an 1,100 metre specialist. That's his go. I'm not saying he can't win, but he's just a real 1,100 metre specialist, and this is back to 1,000 again, which he struck two starts back, and he didn't win. It's funny. Some horses just really, really peak at 1,100 metres, and they have trouble at 1,200 and 1,000. He's one of them. I think every single win has been around that 1,100 metre mark. Now, I'll go with Town Crier each
Speaker 2way instead. Are we giving Brindavan another opportunity? Yeah.
Speaker 17I think Brindavan wins. I think he's too good for those. There's no speed in that race, so Ryan Maloney, I think, would be pushing across pretty quickly. He'll find the fence if something wants to go around him and take it up well and good, but if not, then he's going to get a soft time of it out there. So, yeah, I think he'll bounce back Brindavan for sure. And then the others are looking for something else. And, of course, striking alibi, Gareth.
Speaker 2Yes. You like her out wide there in Sydney.
Speaker 17I do. I certainly do. I'm just worried about that weather in Sydney. I hope it stays away, that rain.
Speaker 2Yeah, well, we don't know. It's from Weather Watch, especially Melbourne and Sydney this weekend, so who knows? We'll find out Saturday
Speaker 17afternoon. We sure will. Just around morning, when it's late morning, when the rain starts to come in, it'll be lovely. Just what we want.
Speaker 2On you, Chris. Thanks, Gareth. Have a good day. Johnny Kelton, thanks to Racing SA, joins us here. Hello to you, John. Good morning, John.
Speaker 18Sorry, mate. I was just getting into the car on my way to the airport.
Speaker 2That's all right, mate. So, you've got Get On SA. Have you filmed it, or are you coming to Melbourne to do it?
Speaker 18No, no. I'm coming to Melbourne to do it. So, heading over there now.
Speaker 2Big day at Murray Bridge on Saturday. Really looking forward to it. Murray Bridge Gold Cup Day. Terrific field, worth $150,000. It's such an important part of the world for racing in South Australia, Murray Bridge, and looking forward to their big day.
Speaker 18Yeah, well said, Gareth. They've really established themselves as a premier training venue in recent years. It's a big, wide track, and yeah.
Speaker 2Do you know what we might do, John? We might give you some time to settle in, and then we'll come back, and we'll catch up with John when he sorts it all out. We'll take a break. We'll come back with Johnny Kelton next year on Giddy Up. Always great to catch up with John Kelton, and we are previewing Murray Bridge Gold Cup Day there on Saturday. Johnny, welcome back.
Speaker 18G'day, Gareth. Sorry about that. No, that's all right.
Speaker 2No, that's all right, brother. Now, it's a good meeting. Obviously, they're expecting a big crowd, and it's not just the Gold Cup we can look forward to.
Speaker 18No, we've got an open sprint there, Race 7. Gee, it is a cracking field. Sir Now, Shadavar, Cash, there's a lot of quality gallopers in that. Even Sir Sway, who we know was Group 1 placed in a Goodwood a couple of years ago, so that's an excellent race, that flying, and hopefully that's one that can really grow on
Speaker 2the calendar. We get Bassett, see Bassett Babe once again as well, so she's always interesting, so it's a good little race. Which wave you let there?
Speaker 18Yeah, just while I'm Bassett, Babe, she actually had a barrier trial on Monday at Morphaville, and to be honest, she was awful. I don't know what to make of that. Certainly one I'm happy to work around in my numbers. Came, came out first up and won, then failed last start after missing the start, and with that barrier trial, I was going around her. Horses I'm keen to back in the race, the first one is Cash. I know he was very poor last time, but Michael Hickmont sort of has made no secret about the fact he had a virus going through the stable, and all of his horses were struggling. We saw last weekend, basically everything he put a saddle on was winning, and I've got a feeling Cash will go a lot better this time back to his home track. Another horse who's big odds in the race that I want to have something on is Rhys de Moor right down the bottom. He's a horse that always runs well at Murray Bridge. There has to be good tempo in this race. Yes, he'll be a long way back, but I reckon he can run a bit of a race at a big price.
Speaker 2Beautiful. So that's a 16, Rhys de Moor, and also Cash. Who do you like in the Gold Cup?
Speaker 18Another very open race. I'm going to go with another horse who's coming out of a weaker race in Snoopy now. He ran last week in the Cup Prelude. He didn't win that, but he ran quite well, and he had 61 kilos on that occasion. A horse that probably has got a few little tricks to him, but around his home track of Murray Bridge, I reckon he'll run really well.
Speaker 2Yes, it's an interesting race. St. Lawrence, he won a race there the other day, and he was able to break through. I reckon he'll enjoy it. What track conditions are you expecting there at Murray Bridge on Saturday?
Speaker 18Yes, they've got a fair bit of race. They've got a fair bit of rain forecast today, but the first rain band that went through earlier this morning, they basically missed. Very difficult to predict. They're saying up to 20 mils of rain, but I'd say some of that would have been in that band that they basically didn't get any from. I'm working on somewhere around a soft five, but I'm very flexible depending on how much rain they get today and tomorrow.
Speaker 2And you think I'm mad here, Johnny. You might think I'm mad, and he's burnt me on so many occasions, this horse. But I didn't mind his run at Bella Clava. It was a terrible gait. Do you give Williamsburg any hope for Garrett Lynch?
Speaker 18Definitely. I thought he ran well at Bella Clava. I thought he was great. Yeah, Bella Clava's a track in recent times that you have to be quite close to the inside rail, and he wasn't. And he sort of made a sharp run at them halfway down the straight, probably entitled to weaken a little bit there. And he's also likely to be fitter for that. Garrett Lynch has got his horses going really well at the moment, so I wouldn't talk you out of him.
Speaker 2Beautiful. So that's Williamsburg in the cup as well. That maybe we could follow. But, yeah, I'm looking forward to that feature race this year. What else do you like as your better bets on the Murray Bridge Skull Cup meeting there?
Speaker 18Yeah, my best bet on the program is in race five, U6, horse number eight. She's a model of consistency, this horse. She basically never runs a bad race. I think in her past 15 or so runs, she's only ever been beaten two lengths maximum. Super consistent there. Shaley Inglesey's been absolutely carving it up here in Southampton. South Australia. And she rode a double last week, and I've tipped her to win a couple again on Saturday. So really keen on her. And another one of her rides in the last race, final countdown. She won on this mare last week. Probably should have won by further.
Speaker 2All right. Beautiful. Anything else for us, mate?
Speaker 18That's about it. I reckon anything you're back, you'll get some value. One other horse I'm having something on in the maiden race, too. Holly Angel ran well at Balaclava on debut. Okay. Royal bred horse. Actually went back to the barrier trials on Monday against some open horses. Trolled up really well. And there were genuine excuses first up when he was forced to get a long way back.
Speaker 2Beautiful race two, number seven, Holly Angel there. Hey, looking forward to get on SA. Go and get him, John. We appreciate your time, mate. Thanks a lot, Gareth. Cheers. Great to catch up with John Kelton there. It's 27 minutes past 11. Tassie time isn't far away here on Giddy Up.
Speaker 1Join the conversation, text us on 0-4-double-9-7-3-6-7-3-6.
Speaker 2Always great to catch up with Matty Reid for Tassie time. The views are better. Tassie, the perfect place to race. Hello to you, Matty boy. Morning, Gareth. Lonnie, Friday nights. We had the first of six consecutive Friday nights last week and looking forward to going again.
Speaker 19Yep, we're into the groove now, G. It was a nice program there last Friday night. There were some good winners on that program. Mark Gannon had a couple of really impressive winners go back to back with Glory Mission and Fighting for Gold. Two horses that have spent a bit of time off the scene. I think Glory Mission has put himself into new market calculations with that win. It was only a benchmark 76, but I think he's probably looking to probably progress to a new market in late November. And I think Connections could. Lay claim to having a genuine new market runner with that performance. Very impressive. Zannie Gell, who ran second there. Of course, a horse that we know really well down here in Tassie. She was a standout two-year-old and she was solid at three, but it was good to see her come back near her best. So I think the first couple there are potentially new market horses in the making. And Fighting for Gold overcame the pattern of the night, sort of rail out plus eight. You wanted to be up and in and Fighting for Gold rounded them up and won after nearly a year off the scene. So exciting times. So exciting times ahead there, too.
Speaker 2He's a very good trainer, Mark Anderson. He can set one up as well.
Speaker 19He is, he is. And when the money comes, gee, it's a stable that you sit up and take notice. And they certainly pulled into both of those runners. So I think he's a good chance of having some winners tomorrow night, too. He's only got four in. He's got Super Snippy and Zuni early on and Thickskin and Bellsprout are both in race four. And they're both really strong winning chances, too.
Speaker 2All right, then. From an interstate perspective, horse of the EGG's mistruth. She was just outside of the placings in the Manicato, but I thought she was very good there for Tiago and Blake Shin.
Speaker 19Yeah, you could probably argue it was nearly a career best for her, gee. I mean, she finished fifth, but I mean, there's nowhere to hide at that level. You're running behind Jimmy Starr, who's sort of as good as we have when he's at his top. So I think they're going to pivot now. And look back towards the Phillies and Mares races. I heard the chat that you had with Trent Edmonds earlier in the week. And it's probably a similar sort of spot with Extra Galactic. You can go back to Phillies and Mares now and you're going to be awfully hard to beat. So I think they're looking at a couple of races on Caulfield Cup Day. There's an 1100 metre sprint or a 1400 metre race for her. My gut feel is they probably come back in trip to the 1100. I just think she's a bit more dynamic at the sprint trips, Gigi's mistruth, but plenty of options going forward. And hopefully she picks up another one soon.
Speaker 2Would you make a Vaz for a blonde star there on the weekend?
Speaker 19Yeah, look, they certainly weren't anywhere near their best wet. Wet conditions didn't suit as far and probably did a bit too much work in the race. So he's trending towards a Geelong Cup, which is the golden tickety one for winning in Launceston. And you hope that that kind of didn't put the prep too far back with that run at Mornington. I know he's come back home, but I think Steve-O's keen to persist with that run and blonde star. She was disappointing off the back of a bottle of fresh too. So I'm not sure where they go to her. There's still plenty of time to get both of those horses ready for sort of our major cups over the summer if the Victorian campaign has to be aborted.
Speaker 2And what can we expect from Silver Dagger down that straight over the 1200 metres in a benchmark 78 at Flemington on Saturday?
Speaker 19Yeah. First time, I guess, is always the big unknown, G, as you'd sort of know better than me. But look, she's a bomb fresh, this horse. First up last preparation, she ran fourth in the Newmarket behind Durazzo and was one of the runs of that race. So her first up record's really good. She handles Sting out of the ground. She won't want it sort of bottomless, but I think if something in the soft range will be fine for her and Froggy knew it, knows the horse really well. So she trialled up well at Longford last week behind Swift Force and we know that the Swift Force form sort of stacks up to a Victorian 78 grade, that's for sure. So look, if she brings her best, I don't think she's a $27 chance or whatever she is in the market. So they've got a little Victorian campaign mapped out for Silver Dagger that I think might culminate in the Grey's race. So I hope she does run well and they can have some fun with her. She's been a really strongly performed mare down here for a couple of seasons.
Speaker 2And we've got plenty to look forward to in the sport of harness racing. Good luck to the Tassie drivers, Geordie Chibnall, and also of course, Dylan Ford, who will be representing Tassie in the Australian Driving Championship there at Globe Derby on the weekend. But there's some nice young horses going around there at Launceston on Sunday.
Speaker 19Yeah, there is, I think there's only a field of four in the Wayne Rattray 2 Classic, but some good horses there. Have you met Maynard and Pogacar, met each other last start. Starlon won, I think, broke the two-year-old track record when it won on a windy day in Hobart too. So small numbers, I'm looking forward to seeing how Dylan and Geordie can go representing Tassie over there. I think they've had a little bit of a mixed bag with the drives that they've been allocated. We'll hear a little bit more from Dill shortly, but hopefully they can drive well. And yeah, the two-year-olds, we're not far away from the Avicus and the Dandy Patch at sort of group two level. Those heats are in a couple of weeks' time. We've got a few more two-year-olds, but it does look as though that the ones that we have racing at the moment, there's sort of some good quality there, which is great.
Speaker 2Have you got a winner for us on Friday night, Stapper, before we let you go? Oh, I'll tell you what, G, I'm due.
Speaker 19I feel like the last winner I gave you, the cleaner was running in Cox Plate, so we need
Speaker 2a result. You'll be right, brother. You'll be right.
Speaker 19Yeah, we've got, we've put the mouth guard in, we just keep boxing on and hope that the results turn. Let's go to the first leg of the quaddie. We'll go Fuel on the front. the fire. It was a good run last Friday night in Launceston. Like the set-up here, Luke Dempsey's riding well. And I think the favourite there, Wolf Jr., will be pretty short. So we'll go for a little bit more value and fuel on the fire and first leg of the quaddie.
Speaker 2Beautiful, mate. You go and set them alight there on Friday night. We appreciate your time. Thanks, Jay. Dylan Ford's a gun. He won his first Tassie Driving Premiership in the trots last year. He gets an opportunity to represent Tassie this weekend, taking on some of the country's best drivers at Globe Derby. Geordie Chibnall will also be representing Tassie. And Dylan now joins us here on Giddy Up. Dylan, hello to you, mate. Welcome to Giddy Up. It's great to have you on the show.
Speaker 20Hey, Gareth. Yeah, thanks for having me.
Speaker 2Mate, go and stick it up. All of these big names on the mainland, G. Hall Jr., James Herbertson. Who else will be there? He's going to be hard to beat. Angus Garrard will be representing Queensland. So it's a privilege. Pretty handy line-up there this weekend.
Speaker 20Yeah, it is. Some big names here, obviously, that have competed on the biggest stage. And, yeah, luckily enough, me and Geordie sort of get to go and have a spin around at Globe Derby.
Speaker 2You've had a wonderful year, mate. Well, you had a wonderful season last time around, winning your first Driving Premiership. Do you feel that you're in career best form? Do you feel that now that you're right on top of your game?
Speaker 20Yeah, I sort of. I've always mucked around with footy, and it sort of took my focus away from driving a little bit. I took a step back two years ago, and now I'm sort of reaping the rewards. I sort of always wanted to win a Premiership, and now I sort of want to just keep carrying on winning Premierships, really. Yeah. Yeah, trying to be the best driver I can each week. And, yeah, we've had some success.
Speaker 2How do you think. Where have you seen the biggest improvement, in your driving?
Speaker 20I just. I just think sort of understanding your race a bit better than what I probably was. I was sort of only focusing on race day. Now it's sort of. I'm looking every day. And the more track work you do, and the more you focus on it, you have to get better. That's sort of the aspect, sort of understanding a race. And it's, yeah, it's pretty easy to do form in Tasmania when you look at it.
Speaker 2Yeah. And, obviously, you're getting more opportunities as well. But, geez, there's some good prize money, and there's plenty of opportunities to make a good go of it these days in Tassie when it comes to the sport of harness racing.
Speaker 20Yeah, we're in a good position, prize money-wise. A lot of sort of interstate trainers come and do campaigns here. And, yeah, obviously, they take our money. But the better quality horses we get, the sort of better product we have to produce. And we sort of. We sort of have to up our game a little bit.
Speaker 2Yeah. What are you looking forward to most at Globe Derby on Saturday night? Have you had a look at your drives, and what do you think?
Speaker 20Yeah, I've had a look. Sort of, it's hard to do form. I'm sort of. Tony Pulicino's sort of going to do that aspect for me, and we'll go into depth a little bit later. But I sort of. The Trotter in the last looks pretty handy. He's been coming off 30 and 40. Real attire for Ryan O'Horrick. So, looking forward to driving him.
Speaker 2Yeah. You wouldn't drive too many Trotters, would you?
Speaker 20Nah, I think I've had two guys in Tassie, and they weren't for me. OK, well. That didn't last too long, but hopefully we can turn it around.
Speaker 2Well, we wish you the best of luck there, mate. And I guess you're driving against drivers of the calibre of Gary Hall Jr. and Angus Garrard and Mark Pitt, James Herbertson. Danny Hill's been a superstar for so many years. Emily Sevelko has got a. Great record in WA. So, it'll be competitive.
Speaker 20Yeah, it sort of all comes down to luck of the draw. But, yeah, like I said earlier, to be driving against some of those names that compete on the bigger stage week in, week out is sort of probably going to be a highlight for me and Geordie and something that we'll enjoy.
Speaker 2Yeah. And what about Launceston Sunday? Good to see Dean Braun campaigning a few back in the state that he loves. And you drive Arden seasonally. He's scaped. Surely it wins again.
Speaker 20I'm actually taking a holiday, so I won't be. Oh, won't you be back? No. But, yeah, I've sort of struck up a good relationship with Dean probably the last two seasons. Always been a sort of a friend and a person that had conversations with. And I've been very lucky to drive his horses on his last two campaigns. And she was progressive. She's done everything pretty easy. So, she does rise in grade. But, yeah, I can't say getting beat.
Speaker 2Yeah. Are you going to be on the Tassie Devils bandwagon?
Speaker 20Yeah, you've got to. It's really exciting for Tassie. Sort of coming from a footy background, it's, yeah, exciting.
Speaker 2Good on you, mate. Well, you go and get him this weekend. Job well done last season, winning your first Tassie Drivers Premiership and the best of luck there on Saturday night.
Speaker 20Cheers, mate. Thank you.
Speaker 2There's Dylan Ford. We'll take a break. Liam O'Keefe, the track curator at Flemington, will give us an update on, what he expects the track will be like come Saturday for Turfle Stakes Day. Let's head out to Flemington to catch up with our great friend, Liam O'Keefe. Liam, hello to you. Morning, Gareth. Hey, first of all, I haven't thanked or congratulated you yet. I know it's about a month ago, but you won the Track Curator of the Year for Australia. That's right, wasn't it?
Speaker 21Yeah. I'm pretty sure.
Speaker 2Yeah. Congratulations, mate. Well done. Yeah, thank you.
Speaker 21No, it was good recognition for all the hard work the staff do here. And yeah, it was good to win.
Speaker 2Yeah. And what about on Saturday, mate? What are they telling you at the Bureau?
Speaker 21Yeah, so to break it down into three days, it's about $25 million. $25 million late later this afternoon tonight. So we shouldn't see any rain until probably 2 or 3 o'clock onwards and the heavier stuff more 4 p.m. onwards. That'll be quite solid tonight, around 20 to 25 millimetres. And then tomorrow, around that 10 to 15 mark spread right across the day, maybe a little bit of clearing during the afternoon, but then restarting again Friday night. Saturday's a little bit. It'll be a nightmare if rain comes Saturday after the rain that you predict there Thursday, Friday. Yeah, that's right. That's right. I was hoping that the rain might clear off, you know, Friday lunchtime and then we can get a little bit of drying time into the track and then we'd probably end up on a better side, a heavy, worse side of soft, which would be a great result. But yeah, it doesn't look like that's going to play out. It looks like we are going to get some sort of rain activity Friday night and then, you know, Saturday, which is what we don't want.
Speaker 2Yeah. Are you concerned that the meeting might not go ahead if the rain does come on the Saturday?
Speaker 21Oh, there's always a chance if you get that continuous rain, during racing, it can be an issue for the riders. And that's at any track, you know, visibility can be an issue. It's probably more so off the back of significant rainfall. So, yeah, hopefully it doesn't come to that, but you can't rule anything out when you get these type of weather events.
Speaker 2You are the best in the business. So, someone's throwing you a challenge here, whoever's upstairs. But what does this do now for your track heading towards the big carnival?
Speaker 21Yeah, it's probably one we didn't want leading into Cox Plate, just having that extra meeting and probably, you know, the most important thing for us is we've got a less, you know, a week's less recovery time from Turnbull through to our normal carnival because you have Cox Plate. So, yeah, we'll have a big team in Sunday morning, getting the track repaired straight away and just giving it every chance that we can. We had a little bit of practice last year. I knew that we had the Cox Plate coming. So, I played around with a couple of little things. Last year that worked well. So, we'll do that during the carnival this year and we'll get it up to as best standard we can.
Speaker 2So, how do you go about doing that then when it's cut up after all these horses? And because it's moving day in a way as well, like usually for a meeting like that, you would get a host of scratchings, but trainers haven't really got, there's a few different races, maybe for the three-year-olds and that, but most of the trainers need to run their horses. So, they prepare them for the grand final in a few weeks time. So, you might not, get as many scratchings than you might usually get if it's a heavy track.
Speaker 21Yeah, that's right. They're massive fields, 158 acceptors. So, there will be a significant amount of wear and tear on the track. Fortunately, it is in excellent condition. It's, you know, going to come out of it as best as it possibly can, but we've got some different maintenance we're going to do to the track next week that we normally do, but it'll just help level out the track and give it the best chance to recover as possible. and then hopefully we can get away with at least dry Cox Plate and Derby and Cup Day so we can get sort of that first half of the carnival out of the way before we tackle the second half but yeah hopefully we're getting the bad luck out of the way Gareth and it can improve for Cox Plate Day.
Speaker 2You're looking forward to the challenge of the four consecutive well you've got Cox Plate Day and then Derby Day Cup Day, Oaks Day and then of course Champions Day so Flemington will be at its very best but you're confident that the track can handle that big workload coming towards some of our bigger races Yeah it will be a big workload
Speaker 21like I've been lucky enough Gareth I've worked at Ascot and Goodwood and York and all the other places that do run the five meetings but probably different there they run seven or eight race cards so they're not too badly damaged coming out of each and every race day whereas we run these nine and ten race cards so it certainly does take its toll on the track but yeah we'll use all our maintenance methods that we've we do throughout the year we've got good systems in place and we'll make sure we get the track up for each and every race day
Speaker 2I know that you're in demand you go all around the world there working with the business that you've set up with the VRC and you've been to Ascot and glorious Goodwood in the Middle East obviously different courses it's different preparing a course in the UK compared to say here in Australia at Flemington but have you been able to pick up some stuff and work out some stuff that you've been able to bring to the race day? Yeah I have definitely
Speaker 21like it's probably where more like a Europe type of track Flemington's like a big open galloping track similar weather conditions during their spring summer and autumn obviously our winters are different but they don't race during their winter on their flat courses but yeah I actually have of probably more so the last couple years I've brought some different turf maintenance methods here that we do preparing the track and I'll be rolling them out again this carnival just helps speed up some recovery and just has it in better condition going in so I have cleaned a lot of things from across those tracks and then you sort of form your own methods when preparing a track and lucky enough when you do work at those big carnivals over there they're quite similar to here and that they're run quite frequently over a shorter period with rail movements and and different you know different maintenance methods they do throughout the week so it's been it's been a big advantage for me and it's been great that the board sent me over there to work about ten years ago for a few weeks and and then off the back of that we have we've been able to set up a business where we we literally go around the world helping race courses and not only do you help people you bring all bring all different ideas and relationships back here so it's been
Speaker 2great well you should be proud with everything that you've been able to achieve in this game Liam and we'll catch up with you tomorrow morning with Mark Hunter for see how much rain you did have there overnight but yeah it's it's my show's been dominated by text messages what conditions are we going to get and I've I've seen this dance before on a Thursday morning when we're expected to get all this rain and it doesn't eventuate but surely they can't stuff it up this
Speaker 21time yeah I'm with you it's been one of those ones where sometimes you do miss it but each time I've rang the Bureau they've been very confident that we'll certainly get significant rain today into tomorrow and then Saturday still a bit wishy-washy so hopefully that low can move away and we can get away with a reasonable day on Saturday but yeah at this stage it
Speaker 2doesn't look great and big news with your organization today Neil Wilson who's been a great servant to the VRC he will retire as a chair of the VRC and Vin Cox takes over which is a great appointment I reckon he's been on the ball for a while Finn Cox but some big news there with the
Speaker 21Victoria yeah that's right Neil's done an outstanding job you know getting the club through covert and he was CEO there for a while and I got to work with him pretty closely for a couple of years and yeah full credit to Neil he's done an outstanding job he'll leave a great legacy the club's going to make a really tidy profit this year for the first time in a long time and the club's really been turned around under under him and Kylie and as you mentioned with Vin great appointment great racing person very well respected across the industry and we'll make sure we get behind him and support him I'm sure we'll do an outstanding job but yeah all
Speaker 2onwards and upwards good on your mate
Speaker 21any winners for a Saturday um uh yeah actually I'll go uh Kieran's horse in the Dane Hill uh next episode yes I agree
Speaker 2with you there everyone's asking me if Athelwulf is turning up Matty Smith would have been on the phone to you as well he's not going to make his decision until as late as possible but if the rain I don't know if he's listening to us right now they're probably going to stay home yeah
Speaker 21he he has rang and he didn't say whether he's coming or not but um I did I did tell him it's you know no no good shoes okay it's going to be a heavy track with the outlook so yeah I'm sure we'll make a decision before the truck leaves I would imagine
Speaker 2tonight yep good on you mate thanks for that Liam thanks Gareth Toddy Gray joins us um I I think Toddy he's obviously our greyhound expert in South Australia it's heats of the Adelaide Cup he's doing a wonderful job on Sky racing as well promoting greyhound racing in SA jeez I miss you Bay didn't miss you before Toddy Graves I say hello
Speaker 22to you hello legend yeah I do know I've copped a little bit of slacks throughout the week for that um that race and selection but this is my chance to give a little bit of context with that yes um I did tip dashing Slay to win the series on the whole um Gareth so okay place heavy and dashing Slay did run second yes she got beaten in the closest match race I'll add by wrongly accused who smashed a track record she actually ran the fourth fastest time at Angle Park history in defeat she paid two we got two dollars 80 and even at the jump 220 to play so I I'll sit here I won't I don't regret that tip maybe I'll stand firm that is the most value out of that series as I could that is
Speaker 2good tipping shut up Mitchie I tell you
Speaker 22what um but it does I know I know what people are coming from like technically yes you tip dash and slay to win the series for her to win the series she has to be wrongly accused yeah uh but I don't really like tipping for the place mate the day I I got more chance getting a six pack in the next 12 months I do tipping another place
Speaker 2so you think you were wrongly accused do
Speaker 22you I like what you did there is well played sir well played what about
Speaker 2tonight mate heat to the Adelaide Cup how do we make if I gave you a hundred dollars what would you do with it at Angle Park tonight
Speaker 22all right let's let's spend this on let's spend this as a little bit of an on-the-fly improv but I know what I like here baby my first selection is number race hour one number eight Zinfandel Comet this would probably be a dog I'd probably end up having just a straight out probably 20 bucks of win on it's seven dollars at the moment I think it'll be feast or famine going to the first turn this favorite here forgery can it win yes but it's too short after coming back from getting really tired over the middle distance last start the six and the seven I believe will jump well and Carter did a race perfectly we get around the first turn I think we get that we win if we don't get around the first turn we're cactus so I go race one number eight Zinfandel Comet um I'll throw 20 on that because that can hopefully set ourselves
Speaker 2up for the night beautiful what else have
Speaker 22we got a couple in the Melbourne Cup race six number two King Nanga I want to at least chop out if we run second or third here it's around a dollar 70 to place so I do a little kind of like a 5 by 15 or 10 by 20 on it uh I brilliant run last week brilliant one first up got lost early no luck in transit and hit the line really well uh it's going to beat the three out and the one dog's going to jump well and give it the perfect rail sit uh I'll tell you one thing for sure this favorite could get cut in half at the start by the eight rips of tears that's the big under in the race with four bucks it'll go double figures so race six number two place heavy King Nanga probably like a oh I'll just probably go five by 15 there I know it's a bit weak but I think we can at least
Speaker 2chop out what else I've got about a
Speaker 22minute and a half oh easy I do like to ramble race seven number two jazzy hope it's very small each very small five bucks each way this this is around about 17 at the moment the six and the seven they're your two favorites one of them's not getting around the first turn we're one of the best railers in the state we're not up to the class of the better dogs here but we are the best drawn and we're the best maps so race seven number four jazzy hope and my best bet whatever I've got left throw it on race eight number two mapanga envy this is two bucks at the moment very confident it starts odds on very simple last start brilliant 30 15 all the sectionals were good it'll beat the three out the one dog if it beats the one dog out that's the key if we take the sit behind we can run them down if we love in front of the one we'll beat it that's the best of the best race eight number two mapanga envy around the bet the two bucks whatever I've got left which should be 50 put 50 on it because at least we'll break it well done your
Speaker 2ass is superb enjoy sky racing tonight thanks for your time toddy boy nah much
