Speaker 3well chris welcome back to melbourne uh autumn boy had us been around here this morning at flemington what did he do and what did you make his work uh he had a thousand meter gallop and
Speaker 6it was just standard work uh had a good look down the straight and uh seemed to be stretching out fine has he come on since he's first up running the memsie he's come on well he's uh fitter for the run and uh yeah visibly he looks a little bit tighter which is how i want him to look and uh he's come on well he's uh fitter for the run and uh visibly he looks a little bit tighter yeah big open space here at flemington he'll appreciate in terms of your hand in the maccabi diva how many are likely to run uh we could have five still a little bit of um decisions to be made uh in terms of which five um i would say buckaroo birdman uh eliana will travel down from melbourne and um autumn boy and possibly i hope he wins eliana how's she after that first up run she's good um obviously she's got a lot of work to do she's got a lot of work to do she's got a lot of work to do she's got a lot of work to do she's got a lot of work to do she's got a lot of work to do she's a little bit flat but sectional times probably suggested that they went a bit quicker than she was comfortable with and just got a bit tired late although nash ruler said the last 200 meters was fine so based on what he said and her her recovery i'm happy with her and uh likewise i think

Speaker 3In terms of the others, Birdman and Buckaroo For Aussie Kia, they both ran well, I thought, in the Memsie.
Speaker 6Yeah, they got home well, and they've come through it well. The mile will suit them both better. We may split one of them up, obviously, the Underwoods the following week. Buckaroo's won that before, and Birdman runs well at Caulfield. So we'll just see how they draw, what the race is like, and which one might be held back.
Speaker 3And I hope he wins. She's second up after that first up run in the Lawrence?
Speaker 6Yeah, she'll come on with the run as well, and a mile on the bigger track will also suit. Obviously, you'd see the best once she gets to 2,000 metres, but I think it's an important stepping stone towards a race like the Turnbull.
Speaker 3In terms of the quality of the field, I mean, there's no hiding in the Group 1s at this time of the year, but it looks like a really strong edition of the Maccabi with Mr. Brightside going for four straight. You've got Sir Delia, she's our alibi. It's a tremendous race.
Speaker 6Yeah, it certainly is. Yeah, so I guess that's what we've come to expect at this time of the year, and it's good to be back. Flemington looks fantastic this morning. It looks like they've done a great job through the winter months to get it in the shape that it is now, so it'll be good racing. She's an alibi. She's a superstar. She had a tough run first up, but I'm sure she'll come on well from it. And the likes of Sir Delia, so I've been keeping a close eye on him. He's been trialling well up in Sydney. So, yeah, Mr. Brightside, he was awesome first up and a few of ours there as well, so it'll be a great race.
Speaker 3Just on Steel Wheel as well, who had a gallop here this morning, I suppose it's hard to line up the Sydney versus Melbourne form. Where does he sort of rank among your good three-year-old colts?
Speaker 6Well, we're not sure, and that's why we want to run him, just to see where he does fit in. Sentimentally, there's a little bit of hope in our favour. He's a brother to September Run, and this is when she found her great form. I think she was a champion three-year-old sprinter of her year, and she found form in a similar type of race. And he's done everything right in Sydney, so we just want to see how he performs down the straight, and then he can go through to a Dane Hill and hopefully a Cornwall, but they're big steps.
Speaker 3You've had a bit of luck with Ironman Invincible Colts in the Cornwall. Would it be nice to get a third?
Speaker 6Yeah, it sure would. Yeah, it's a good race and an amazing spring, and just getting these colts, it's a lot of fun, just to gradually encourage their improvement, and some of them get there, some don't, but, yeah, start with a positive mindset and give them the opportunity, and normally they continue to improve.
Speaker 5And your five in the MacGyver Deva probably have bigger plans going forward as a stepping stone, but is Autumn Boy probably the top seed for one of the better teams?
Speaker 6I guess so. Like, he's a good miler, he's a Guineas winner, and James was happy with his first-up run. He didn't get a lot of luck over the last 200 metres at Caulfield. So, yeah, it's an important race for a colt, especially him.
Speaker 5Carl Jung Rising winning over the weekend is that tempered match race sort of discussions?
Speaker 6Not really. No, the match races are a long way away for everybody, so it's good to talk, but it was great to see him come back the way he did. It was great. And he's creating a huge impression around the world, so that's great for racing. So, yeah, when the time comes, we'll get a little bit more involved.
Speaker 5Michael, there's a race named after Michael Moroney on Saturday as well. Yeah. Obviously a countryman. You wouldn't have spent too heap of time down here, I wouldn't have thought.
Speaker 6Always... Yeah, well, we used to share the town, when I used to come down here, and he was just great to have a yarn with. And he's loved his history of racing and just an amazing man and a great horse trainer, a good person. So, yeah, it's great to have a race named in his honour.
Speaker 3Just a quick one on Baybark. Was there any consideration of him stepping out to the mile here? There was.

I think that's a good thing. big way and then he storms into calculations there with the cox plate market but at the moment with the horses that we know um it does look a lovely race there for sir delius clinton mcdonald isn't far away he's about to join us of course he's got strides and engaged in uh at flemington on saturday the blue diamond champ and then of course he's got a couple of interesting runners at sandown tomorrow some progressive types that he'll be sending around in what horses he's got the um tales of time which is a horse that i know that our man trent mason held has got a lot of time for and simply steffy as well um that's beautifully bred he did have a big opinion of this horse at her first preparation and it'll be interesting to see how she goes there tomorrow simply steffy so tales of time and simply steffy we'll have a chat to clinton about those two chances there on a wednesday afternoon simon wilde has been good enough to join us he's got an interesting runner there at sandown tomorrow of course the shiitaka was the race that was postponed until tomorrow afternoon after the storm hit um sandown on saturday afternoon i think he's ready to go now because persian spirit is the warm favorite for the shiitaka stakes and he's ready to go simon wilde g'day simon thanks for your time pleasure um how is persian spirit because did you go back home after saturday night yeah we we
Speaker 7um we brought him home and yeah uh yeah we just um he's just he went to the beach and then he had a a light sort of gallop at warnable uh yesterday morning um just to keep things ticking over um but yeah he seems he seems to have handled it all really well and uh you know hoping um you know just hoping it goes ahead he's funny horse he's been to the this has happened to him three times throughout his career where he's gone to the races and had to had to come back so he's actually an

Speaker 7complicates things a little bit because with the horses going into the spring you know we plan to be first up three weeks till his uh second run and then two weeks into hopefully the rupert clark and you know it uh you know we thought it was all working out so well there was only seven runners and the pattern of the day was really going to suit him um but now you know and you're obviously you taper off a bit towards the race uh so yeah it throws the the plans out a little bit but um look warnable were good enough to let us um you know just do a bit of evens on the grass yesterday and like i said it's not ideal but um you know you just got to work around and we're lucky we've got you know we've got the facilities to to sort of um you know roll with the punches a little bit so uh you know he lives in a paddock he's you know he's quite a you know at this time they're in a good environment so i'm sure he'll he'll fun up and and run very well because in a

Speaker 7yeah it's funny he's got good wet track form but that was in in lower grade i actually think the drier the better for him uh i know no one cup day last year he um you know on a reasonably firm track he he shows a terrific turn of foot on top of the ground so i think he's his best ground is really a four or five um but i mean you you'd never scratch him on a on a wet track but um yeah i think i reckon he's more dynamic

He just got in between horses and he, uh, he really resented it. He's, um, he's still not the, you know, furnished finished article. Uh, so he's got a bit of, uh, you know, learning and growing up to do still, but, um, yeah, he's, he's in good order and we're pushing on. It was just a nightmare,
Speaker 2wasn't it? The other day you're in trouble a long way from home. Yeah, that's right.
Speaker 7He, um, it's funny. A lot of his wins, he's always got to the outside, um, in a lot of his runs and he just got wedged in between. He had them, you know, on either side and in front and behind him. And he, uh, yeah, he just really panicked. So, but yeah, he's, he's still a bit raw and, and, and that's him a bit. So, um, you know, probably this time next year will be when he's going to be really at his best.
Speaker 2Geez, Warrnambool, it must be just humming at the moment. There must be a great energy, um, around the training facilities there because I don't think I can recall, and I might be wrong and you would know better than I, Simon, but, um, a better group of horses trained out of Warrnambool than you've got now.
Speaker 7Yeah, I, I think you, you, you'd be right. And we've had some, you know, over the journey there have been some really good horses coming out of Warrnambool, but, and trained in Warrnambool. But yeah, just at the moment there's, um, you know, Tom's got a, assembling a great little team there of sprinters and, um, yeah, it's, uh, you know, it is, it's, it's exciting. You know, we don't sort of get the, the blue bloods down here, but it's great when you can compete up, you know, in the big time in this, at the spring carnival and, you know, it's the beauty of racing. You're, you're always a champion.

How are you? I'm very well, mate. I appreciate you joining us on this busy Tuesday morning. First of all, how is Hort, this horse on Daboo that was heavily supported on Friday?
Speaker 8Yeah, Hort's obviously very disappointing for everyone, for the owners and for the hunters, but she put up chronically shinsaw, which she hadn't shown any signs, but Ben said she dipped at about the 50-metre mark. And we come back in and obviously I was steaming and I'd done my money. And we tried her out. She was doing great. She was doing great. And we tried her up and couldn't really feel. She was probably a half out of five. And the more she cooled down, the worse she got. And by the time we got her home, she was quite sore on both front legs and had shin splints and she's gone to the paddock. So it hasn't been a good 12 days for McDonald Racing, to be honest. I think in cricket it's called the Golden Ducks. We've had four runners for four zeros. So anyway, we live to fight another day and we'll see how we go.
Speaker 2I apologise. I was at the Lomaros on Friday at the Brighton Cricket. It's a great club racing luncheon. Anyway, they asked me for a tip and I said, "Well, the mail is this horse from Clinton McDonald. He's probably the greatest punting trainer going around. They're declaring this horse the mail is. The jumping out of trees to back it, you should just get on." Anyway, drops out the back and unbelievable scenes, really. You just couldn't make it up.
Speaker 8It's a terrible way to do your money when you seem to be pulled up and it does hurt. And I had a number of private phone calls coming through, calling me a number of things under the sun. Did they really? Yeah, I said, "Just get in line, boys. So get in line, take a number and I'll get back
Speaker 2to you." That's a bloody disgrace if that's true. I can't believe that would happen.
Speaker 8It is quite incredible that people are that low. But anyway, we move on.
Speaker 2And you pick up private numbers. That'll do me. I thought you'd be no chance.
Speaker 8Well, I was hoping for someone ringing me to give me my money back, but it wasn't.
Speaker 2I don't know. Some betting firms paid out in bonus bets, they were telling me anyway. But my bookmaker did it. I definitely did it. What about Streisand, mate? Is she ready to go on Saturday?
Speaker 8She's as ready as she needs to be. Obviously, we want to get to a cool moor. She's in great order. Everyone's probably seen her trials. She trialed beautifully here at Cranbourne. And then we took her across to Cranbourne Racecourse and we gave her a very quiet trial. I wanted to ride her quiet because that's how we're going to ride her on Saturday. 59.5 kilos on her back. I don't want her up doing the bullicking work like she always does. I don't think she's there yet. And we'll ride her quiet. She worked this morning here. She worked very well. Ben Mellon came in and rode her. He's very happy with her. So she's where she needs to be for run obviously trying to peak her for a cool more as a grand final so she goes around the the captain
Speaker 2tebes there on saturday um does she definitely go to the cool more is there a chance that maybe you long have got too many of their star three-year-olds that'll head down that path and she might be a horse that they aim up at a champion sprint well that's definitely a possibility and
Speaker 8obviously with uh you long you know everyone's very lucky to train for them they've got so many nice horses uh you know i've got another nice colt there from tales of time that's looking to go to a cool more so yeah i think uh you know the proof's on race day uh what i can tell you is that strizan's consistently good every time she steps out so she'll be ready to go to whichever race that uh we needed to go to if you long you know tap me on the shoulder and say you know we've got enough colts going there uh let's go to a champion sprint she'll be going there otherwise you know they drop by the wayside uh strizan will be ready to go to the cool more i'd love to take her against her own age uh i think she's got autumn three-year-old sort of take on all those older horses but at the end of the day um you know it's you long's decision they own the horse they they pay the bills and uh what they want to do is uh you know i follow instructions is it a do you get to know
Speaker 2as a horse trainer whether these two-year-olds like a strizan who had it she never really missed a big dance did she in a two-year-old season have come back as a three-year-old or we won't find out and you won't find out until saturday but what i have seen over the time you
Speaker 8know every time there's a two-year-old he's come back bigger better stronger all that crap and plenty of them fail so i'm happy to wait till uh race day with her and uh i feel that the feeling i'm getting from her is that she's in great order i don't know how much she's improved but uh you know she's by magnus who we all know that that breed get better with age and uh i can't see no reason why she won't um she's very similar to hayes you know she's very tough very understated all she does is eat sleep and work
Speaker 2and uh she's very easy to train um tales of time he's a cop by pinna turbo the daly stallion he's racing in the year-long colors he's got to carry 61 there tomorrow afternoon in a benchmark 64 would you be backing him around 245 with bet 365 clint yeah well yes he's a very good cult and i
Speaker 8think he's flying i think he's tried against the older horses this time in and uh proven that he's a decent cult and you know the trial with here comes to start who i thought ran very well the other day in the moya probably ran the second fastest last 200 of that race so he's a decent cult uh the only query i have and i always worry about his weight now he's carrying 61 kilos um and you can get one of those horses down the bottom with just that little bit less weight he's first up uh but he's done a pair of work i think if he's going towards a cool more he should just be winning and uh that's what we're
Speaker 2hoping to see tomorrow and simply stephy i reckon you've had a big opinion of this horse i think she was nearly on the level of streisand in a two-year-old season now i could have been hearing things and i might be wrong um but she's first up as a three-year-old philly on wednesday afternoon your expectations with her this time around yeah i'm sorry in the same boat
Speaker 8with a lot of my horses at the moment these wet tracks are just sort of really sort of dampening our spirits a little bit um she's better on top of the ground i feel and we've got a number of horses in the same position so sort of even track work you know we've been sort of dogged by wet tracks down here at cranbury only due to you know the weather and and when we do get grass as well but uh yeah i think we've had the most of the time we've had the most of the time we've had the most of the rain we've had for the five years since we've been down here at royal cranbourne and it's been very wet but i think the track can dry out for sand down she gets in terrific at the weight so i think she's carrying 52 um and she's getting a lot of weight off those older horses which i think is a big plus so she'll sit back i think she'll be very strong late uh caitlin hollywood's apprentice to us now and she's riding terrific she's put in all the work and uh she knows the horse well and

Speaker 8got pneumonia so he's quite sick there for a little bit and he's all good now but i'm just going to give him a really nice break probably give him eight to nine weeks in the paddock hopefully get some good spring grass and then come back and start again but uh it's been very hard to keep the faith but i still know how well that horse can gallop he's as good a galloper as i've seen and i think now being a gelding like most of us should be i think he'll be concentrating and hopefully get back to winning

Speaker 2gareth hall welcome back to giddy up all thanks to bet365 it is great to have your company on this tuesday morning it's another exciting week ahead when it comes to racing especially in sydney and melbourne um highlighted by the mckibie diva there at flemington as we already pointed out this morning there's some great three-year-old racing in flemington on saturday you've got the run to the rose um on saturday as well from ramwick so looking forward to that there's a couple of star three-year-olds that'll be on the road next week so we'll see you next week stepping out at rose hill on saturday you got the theo marks as well um so yeah it's a great weekend of racing coming up it was a terrific weekend last weekend and this man i reckon was pretty excited to watch kane rising do what he did there on sunday afternoon racing and sports.com's adam blanco hello to you adam thanks very much for your time as always mate always a pleasure gareth how are you this morning good thank you so when you were watching kane rising what was your first reaction once you heard the time
Speaker 10um check it yeah probably my um who did that time yeah that was probably first um such an outlier it was um and then basically anticipation for the next half a dozen races because i wanted to get um a better feel for the the conditions because so often track records and and times like that are a function not just of good horses and i don't think anyone's doubting that the horse is a good one i don't think anyone's doubting that the horse is a good one but the conditions obviously have a large part to play as well and he did have very slippery conditions there but that's not to say he didn't run a time figure that was world class and about
Speaker 2as good as sprinters go i would say okay so from a time figure perspective when you analyze the numbers um how good of a performance was that can you compare it to another performance when it comes
Speaker 10to your figures uh yeah over sprint trips so the the peak of black caviar is is it you know that's about where i haven't got much else at that level over over sprint trips so um yeah that's that's where you're talking there i think the the black caviar days when she was really torching it against sort of hey list was at the 1400 back to a thousand in a lightning where she um she absolutely dropped the hammer that day that was probably as fast as as they go and and the tj when hey list had her absolutely shot to bits well this time figure is um if it's not exactly what she was producing there it's it's within the margin um so that's that's how i would put it um so that's that's what i'm seeing there it's it's within the margin of error so um anyone who tells you with absolute precision that he's 0.047 or something you know better or worse is um they're having a bit of a lend of themselves they're lost in model land gareth i think it's it's sometimes when you get that close it's time to step into the real world and just appreciate it a little bit because there are certain things that aren't captured in models and it is easy especially if you're quite good at it and if you have a good model you can kind of get a little high on your own supply a little bit some of the time and you can sort of forget that there is things that you don't capture and it's probably worth just taking a deep breath breathing it all in and enjoying the the racing on a more subjective level as well it was beautiful to watch you knew
Speaker 2you were watching something quite special when zach put his foot down he just raced away um but then once mark mcnamara read out the time he just had to go and um he just had to stop it and then rewind it just to see if he actually said what he said but you make a good point so if you if you're if you weren't old enough to watch black caviar do what she did um i'm sure you would have watched the replays of the superstar mayor um we are seeing another black caviar basically dominance in front of us right now yeah absolutely i would think i did think um black caviar at the time it's
Speaker 10sort of hard to believe you sort of think wow this is and people would have said it at the time once in a lifetime etc um and they probably i don't think they would have said it at the time they were being ridiculous or over the top but it's um we've got another one and i i don't think anyone making any credible measure of things could could seriously say that there's you know she'd smash him or he'd smash her or one way or the other i think if anyone's way out on a limb on on that jewel on that hypothetical jewel um and it's a fun one it's a good pub debate that one um but i think if anyone's right out on a limb they're being stupid back in the days when far
Speaker 2up was going around they probably said you'll never see another far lap it took us a little they probably said you'll never see another black caviar carling rising coming along you'll probably never see another wink thanks maybe autumn glows come along um where are it's been quite amazing really over the last say 25 30 years the superstars and champions and the horses that have just completely dominated that we've been able to see um it's been unbelievable really yeah there have been some
Speaker 10some really special ones i was actually when you look at it as well there are certain ones that are absolute champions that have been quickly i don't want to say forgotten but usurped in it in a way i mean even horses like i mean winx to some extent globally yeah it was alongside say and they enable yeah i feel like they had similarities i mean no one in the northern hemisphere would would dare allow you to say that winx was the equal of enable but ratings wise there wasn't much in it um and yeah horse like that and it's just you know they're um they're very quickly usurped aren't they i think you're being kind to autumn glow to refer to her as winx just yet
Speaker 2no i'm not but i'm saying like she's gonna start a double 10 in a in a king charles in a few weeks time
Speaker 10around that anyway yeah she's she's very very good i think the when you get to where kaying is and where winx touched um and i think kaying is probably if if you wanted to really nerd out on it you could maybe argue about winx's absolute peaks but i think he's done it so repetitively now that he's sort of moved his mean up above her he operates probably on a slightly higher plane than than she did and i know that'll offend some people yeah um but he's probably a bit more of an outlier statistically than than she was he's probably starting to move away from the um winx sort of conversation or even the enable conversation or whatever of modern greats and move into that sort of flight line frankel conversation where i i don't think he's them yet either i should say he's sort of probably drifting in the middle somewhere but he's probably moving from one conversation to the
Speaker 2other so in your time who's the best horse that you've rated is it frankel yeah yeah yeah frankel
Speaker 10and flightline are probably the two that were um equinox was the other horse i was going to mention there who was an absolute worldy but very quickly has has probably you know those conversations those pub chats move quickly he probably doesn't come up as maybe he could and should but i in my time rating horses and i wouldn't claim to be an american expert by any stretch but i can get my hands on the data and so nerded out over it for a while and then flightline was um sort of almost like a model buster if you like i mean kaying rising running that sort of time i know i can sort of try and explain it away with um conditions on the day etc but you are moving into where they're sort of hitting that that outer limit of of horse performance where it does you know at the very margins that's where models themselves tend to you know struggle a little bit when you start to get out to those outliers and those extremes and he's moving over into that but yeah in my time frankel was um was probably it and and flightline was the sort of wow is this he didn't have the same could i say aura gareth he probably didn't have the same obvious appeal because he was relatively fleeting flight line but by the time everyone was convinced he was gone um but yeah what he did in his very brief time was a little bit insane to be honest it didn't it didn't make a lot of sense to the models i suppose and that's that's how you know they're good one thing that kaying has done to point out is um he's run now over 137 times and i think when we get i'm saying that in time form language but i think it's universal language for world-class performance he's done that seven times post everest in a row and that was the number of 130 in a row that frank will manage to reel off at his absolute peak he went out off seven uh i haven't got better than that so he turns up at ram with looking to break a real nerd record there one for the absolute desperates um kenny run 130 plus eight times in a
Speaker 2row and yeah i think that's his greatness and everyone says he's not beating much but consistently he's turning up up running those times and producing those figures um and you just point out that's greatness when he is in the same conversation of frankl um and joining him regarding that particular stat so yeah i think he's just frozen adam blanco so we'll get back to him in just a moment in fact we'll take a break and i i do apologize if i did come across saying that i'm putting autumn glow in the same conversation as winks i didn't mean that i said that autumn glow is going to build up a record she's going to start a dollar 10 in a race like the king charles probably if she's alibi doesn't go down that path but um i didn't mean to say that she is in the same breath as wings she has got a long long long long way to go 10 minutes tonight we'll catch up with adam blanco once we unfreeze him live from canberra next year on giddyup

Speaker 2100 but if i i if i did mean it i i would i would own it but i must have stepped up with the wording that i use and i apologize for that but she will she could she could get into wink's type of territory she keeps on winning but as i said she's got a long way to go she could tempted could but
Speaker 10she has even further to go um but she did briefly there i suppose win well enough and fast enough the time was good and i think it was interesting actually what chad scofield said about she probably traveled a little bit too quickly she was probably in a gear above herself over a thousand meters there um but she still managed to eventually find those feet and really put it away so there's probably a brief moment after after that performance and putting a number on that performance back right at her absolute best at a thousand meters um or very close to it um there's probably a moment there where you think oh wow maybe we do have something to um to stick it to this hong kong nag come the mountain race but um 24 hours later he kind of shut that down a little bit um but it was a good concord very good concord as i said she was back essentially at her best and and headwall was um back essentially at his best too and i dare say with a cleaner run through he probably runs to a new peak which is um i think a massive hat tip to to maddie smith who's having an absolute run at the moment and headwall's another one who's run right up to that and then an old mate there in in beadman who i had flagged as a potentially very very good horse off his two-year-old form and thought he might be slightly undersold because he'd done it on the mud up there at the gold coast um i've been proven largely wrong in the sort of 18 months since then but i think there was a little flicker there on on saturday that maybe he's ready to um be the horse i i thought maybe one day he could be which is to say a fringe group one horse over sprint trips but um depending on where you aim this spring being a fringe group one horse isn't gonna get you far no i reckon so just having a
Speaker 2look at the horses that are in contention for the everest tempted will get a slot i think they want a slot with bave whack but they'll have to watch and see what he does in a manicado um ninja or jamaica if he's booking to the everest they're on saturday yeah there are slots to be taken and he's
Speaker 10promising as as any in fact from a ratings point of view ninja tempted and a live another day are all basically i think 121 21 19 and all with pluses and peas all over them so they're all at that sort of level at that level ready to move into the the top flight in australia and the top flight at the moment as we've discussed time and time again looks pretty shaky with the the two stars jimmy and joely who are a few pounds ahead of that so 123 four um but probably looking like they're you know maybe i'm being unfair but let's say on the way out big bad briasses i'm sure wayne's going to tell us that he's come back bigger and better than ever but i'll believe it when i see it yeah flying um so he's in that sort of low 120s as well but he's been patchy and as i said i'll believe it when i see it i'd probably rather be with that trio who have come back and won and have upside and are close enough anyway yeah so you've got um jimmy

Speaker 10wouldn't you he could run into the money um yeah yeah optimistically you probably do i mean i don't know the economics of it um outside of just trying to pick a horse who can run really well in it i think if you were trying to get the most out of beadman in in my view which is to try and win races and i'm not collecting the prize money i'm just betting on them so i um i don't really care what the pot is at the end i i wouldn't go to the everest because i think i wouldn't back him in there no you might back him in and there are other races i could bet he looks like a sydney state source for sure and certain i tell you there's a you could come down and run in a scalacci or something like that which would be extremely gettable for him we might ask you if you got yeah so if you got nine to four you have a big enough bet who needs the everest if you have a big enough bet at the nine to four in a scalatch especially if you're on your wage at racing and

Speaker 10in my eyes she is our best defense at this stage i don't know if it's as good as she is but she's going to be our best defense at this stage clear cut on the numbers so i think you could look at the same numbers and interpret them differently so there would be still debate about who is the biggest defense in our office anyway um and i know that my greek mate doesn't necessarily agree sorry take us inside the inner sanctum of

Speaker 10oh he just drifts in yeah yeah absolutely well that's true of every christmas party in canberra gareth that's just might drift in that's ricky stewart turns up yeah oh yeah that all just comes with the territory yeah yeah um the debate though i mean the debate is is whether so ratings in themselves are it's important probably to remember that ratings are for the most part anyway it depends on your parameters if you like but it's for the most part a task in description so the ratings describe what has happened so they don't necessarily and we can get confused and people do get confused about what they're using their ratings for is it is it description or is it prediction um so time form ratings are descriptive they describe what has happened um in a principled statistical manner but they don't predict the future there is a predictive element to them obviously higher rated horses win more often than lower rated horses but they don't necessarily out predict the market for example the market has information beyond the time form rating or the rating of a speed figure
Speaker 2of a racehorse what kind of information can you give us an example what information they would
Speaker 10have there in the market so the market is beyond simple things like the market is able to figure out whether this race well i say able to figure out is to estimate fairly efficiently over time whether this race is suitable for this horse so kane rising's rate at 137 if he turns up in the kunji tomorrow yes i'm still back there would be i would probably be tempted but there'd be a price and the market would do a good job of figuring out how likely he was to run to that rating over 2000. things like barriers they're not going to worry kane rising because he's fast um jockey bookings and the real big one that the market is clever at figuring out is how well the sample which is to say the ratings that we have in the book represent the total distribution of a horse and another way to say that would be it's really good at picking the upside yeah um so as i said ratings describe something but horses if a horse goes 100 110 in its first two starts i think it's silly that you wouldn't sit there and go well this is 110 horse you'd think well based on hundreds and hundreds of other horses who have done this and there isn't actually that many that have done that exact example well they typically turn out to be 130 horses so the ratings themselves are not predictive they're descriptive and it's in that bit that the um the fists start flying at rnshq that's the it's over that sort of section that we can we can debate and argue and decide okay well there's not a lot of debate that tempted around 120 plus or minus some error margin on the weekend um but there is some debate about whether she'll run 125 in an everest or whether she is absolutely maxed out at 120 and she'll struggle to run it again um so that's where the that's yeah that's where the debate lies and it gets heated it gets heated
Speaker 2who's more of a chance in your eyes to run 125 guest house or tempted
Speaker 10do you know you've it's as if you've got the office bugged because that is exactly where the debate between well me and simon in particular at the moment lies he would tell you that it's guest house and i do see his point um and i think it's probably tempted and i don't think he sees my point i need to make it clearer yeah well time will tell and that's the as adam um
Speaker 2as adam o'brien said enough i've got to get that clip so i can just keep on replaying it when we have these type of discussions the best part about racing is people's opinion and you are well rewarded if your opinion's right like you'll be able to take um simon you'll have a bet for i don't know red rooster or one of the the king's least chicken in canberra the best ever restaurant in canberra where you can have that bet who beats who home and between tempted and guest house and that's the beautiful part about racing i reckon so um it is going to be interesting the everest um cutting rising at a dollar 40. i think if he turns up and he's ready to rock and roll and he trials nicely he'll start probably a dollar i5 on the world pool i would imagine come come that saturday

Speaker 10perfect storm getting in just before the storm there for my gladiola and she was well placed obviously and i think they would just be so happy that it was at san diego not mooney valley because i think that played to her strengths and then once you do get that lovely setup and everything you know the stage is set there's a bit of pressure on johnny mccardle there to to produce her at her best tick he did that and then there's a bit of pressure on jamie mott to uh not stuff it up and tick he did that so um perfectly executed and and yeah she was bang there with her lightning second from first up last prep so i suppose the next challenge for for her is to to be able to take that deep into a prep and to to replicate it over and over again and even improve on it if she wants to win something even a bit better but um she doesn't really need to i suppose that's a that's a great moment and um yeah so i can she is she i mean every time a horse wins a sprint now it's you know a bit like every time a horse wins a staying handicap with her was that a melbourne cup horse is that an everest horse um i don't think she probably is and i think she'd probably be best to avoid it but um she's done her job to some extent
Speaker 2um mr brightside's looking for four macaibi divas on saturday and it was a great one by craig williams what a legend he is i was talking to a few of his owners there the other day and they said forget macaibi diva if he wins four macaibi divas it should be the mr brightside stakes after saturday i said well i'll sign the petition yeah yes three melbourne cups are hard to beat i was telling them but anyway mr bright so they should name a bar after him at flemington if he can do that anyway what a champion he's been um if blake shin rides him like craig williams rode him there like that he's going to be a legend he's going to be a legend he's going to be a legend last year will she's alibi still be too quick for him with her turn of foot um do you know that would

We'll be hoping he does turn up, Light Infantryman, looking at the market that I see in front of me now, Adam.
Speaker 10Yeah, Light Infantryman would actually benefit. He's not going to beat them in a dash. So it would suit him to rip it along and it would probably suit her, which in a weird game theoretical way rolls around and suits her again, so it doesn't suit him. Now, that does sound a little bit tricky, but she's good enough that, I mean, it's a very soft alarm. I'm not smashing the red button here and saying we have a problem. But, yeah, there's a little question for her to answer there because she has done her best work in high-pressure situations. And I think the analogy I always make is that it would be easier to beat Tiger Woods at sort of putt-putt than it would be to beat him on a championship course over 8,000 metres. He'd beat you by further when it got harder and the easier it is. So if they're running a time in the 60s, well, a lot of horses can do that. Whereas if you take the time and you say, OK, and this is why Aidan O'Brien, I think they've been stuffing it up lately, but this is why Aidan O'Brien always wants those races won and run in really fast time because he backs his horses to be the fastest and says, look, I'm going to set the bar up here and back my horses to jump it. And if you're too weak, you won't get there. So if it's going to be running one in 60, all of a sudden there's a lot of horses that can get there and you don't chuck those weak ones out. So that would be some sort of niggle. It would compress the probabilities of winning as well. So, yeah, if she's an alibi, you'd love Light Infantryman to be in there and just running them along. It doesn't have to be crazy, but just running them along at a reasonable clip to make it a fair test and to make it, well, a test at all.
Speaker 2We've got a few more questions and we've got to take your picks before we let you go. It's well written, the way that she went there on Saturday winning the Pras here, because a lot of our friends in New Zealand want me to ask you this. Does she deserve to be favourite for the Epsom?

Speaker 10Attic is humming along for it. So they're probably the two that quickly spring to mind, but she's rated better. Yeah. So if that's what she's got to race, if they were the two that she had to race well as they're going, they should come across the Tasman charging chest out. They should come across like Vikings. Yes. That's what they've got to race. Autumn Boy, you know, I'd be a little, that will take some more beating, although he was only just a returner. And wasn't in, she was better than him first up. So I think she's a bit more special, a bit more electric than autumn boy as well. So, um, yeah, she deserves to be favored. Absolutely. She's a ripper. And I hope we look at these sort of similar profiling horses coming across from New Zealand and they do have a terrific record. I know we, we like to, you know, we get a bit snobbish, um, and we'd like to look down our nose. We're going to look down our nose at someone. So we'd like to look down our nose, you know, at the horses, particularly the non-classic horses over there in New Zealand, um, but the ones that have come here. Here have typically run their numbers and she's got good numbers. So, um, I would back her, you know, maybe four weeks before we're claiming her as one of our own, if she does well.
Speaker 2She'll have an Australian jockey, I think as well. I don't know who, but probably he can't ride. I think he's still in contention. But, um, yeah, they haven't made the decision who actually rides. Now I've got 10 of the best questions sent through from our listeners on the Garrett's horse and our text line. Speaker 2Um, who was the highest rated horse carrying rising has beaten. How does that compare to black caviar? That could be a difficult question without notice.
Speaker 10Yeah, that is a difficult question without notice. Cause I will inevitably forget one, but it's nothing that is. And I like to make fun of the, what's he beaten brigade because that's obviously we can measure them beyond something as simple as beating good horses, but it does feel like he does. He is a good enough horse, a great enough horse. In fact, to deserve, to have better opposition, if you know what I mean, he's um, black caviar benefited, I think from having such brilliant rivals, like having, and it wasn't just, Hey list with buffering and the list goes on. There was actually, you know, even horses like epaulette and rain affair and these sort of horses, they were terrific, terrific sprinters. It was a vintage era for sprinting and she just happened to be dominant and an outlier, even in a, in a. In a vintage, you know, time. So, um, yeah, it is a shame that at this stage, the names that spring to mind are probably the best of Helios express and, uh, Saturno rev are probably the two best horses that he's, he's knocked around and he could obviously knock around far better ones. Um, unfortunately we don't really have anything better than them to offer up a sacrifice either, um, at the altar of Kaiying rising. It'd be nice to, you know.
Speaker 2Yeah. Poor old Kai rising if he could talk, you'd say shut up. Like I'm beating, I have to beat, I'm smashing give me something to challenge me and we haven't got anything.
Speaker 10He would love, I think he would love to have something to challenge him, but the cupboard is largely bare. I think you'd have to say that there's not a lot there. Maybe he could go and race that, um, it's a horse called Englishman on dirt over in America. Yeah. That'd be. He's, um, he's very fast. He should go and race him on dirt. Now that, then the legend would grow.

Like the, she is a better comparison than wings for autumn glow. Yeah. She's, um, she's very much in that sphere and, and you're right, she probably does get, get forgotten. We were talking about this before. There are better horses than her still that they get quickly forgotten in, in those debates, but I suppose there's only so many, um, pub debates that we can have.
Speaker 2I'm pretty sure Adam tipped the arc winner at a decent price last year. What's your thoughts this year? And there's a couple of other questions there cause STAD was placed there in France on the weekend. Would you send him to Sydney for a golden Eagle? Um, that's from Damien.
Speaker 10Yeah. Erdan Ali beat him for Francis Henri Graffard in a ridiculous 93 seconds for the long shot mile, which obviously on a day of, um, when carrying rising was, was running 106, um, you had to, you had to run something pretty special against the clock to get anyone's attention. But Erdan Ali on an ordinary Sunday would have, um, would have got the time for you. If to run, uh, to run that I don't have a faster time for the long shot mile in, in the books. Um, but Gustav was disappointing behind him all the same. And, um, I think I'm not sure all is, all is entirely well with him there. So, um, I think it might be back to the drawing board with Gustav.

Speaker 2stakes is always a good race basically to kick off the spring for these three-year-olds and made quite the impression they're on the boo um have you been happy with him on his way back to the races after dominating that race on the hillside track at sandown in the middle part of
Speaker 13winter yeah he's been good mate he's um he's going along really really well at the moment he's obviously had two nice trials just to sort of bring him back to a good level of fitness and um obviously a few gallops in between and he's going along really really well obviously even prior to his first start we we made a plan to hopefully be heading for these better races over the spring and everything's sort of just gone the right way which is good to see so how do you get him to a cool more stud stakes now he's got a winny he's way in doesn't he he's got to keep running well and um you got to earn your right to be there for a race of that caliber so uh i just felt that after obviously his super win first up it was obviously time to put the brakes on and and obviously it already sort of set out a program for him and just sort of wanted to be the new kid on the block a little bit i don't want to be going around in august so to speak i want him to sort of be peaking for for when he gets to
Speaker 2well the 31st of october yeah um what's your expectations with him on the road on saturday do you expect him to go really close yeah i would i think there's nowhere to hide you
Speaker 13sort of got to be ready for these sort of races as a cult you're sort of uh you got to be prepared if you're off your game you're not in the finish so you need to be as ready as you can be without being ready if that makes sense yeah and um that's probably where he's at he's he's in really good shape really good order coat looks pretty good um but with room for improvement for obviously to get to hopefully the dane hill and the cool more after that is he a better horse than organized crime uh good question henry field won't want to listen to this no he's about to join us in just a moment is he yes yeah he's one of my good mates henry he's a good fella look in fairness um i think they're both pretty high quality cults i think mbube is a lot more straightforward remote control car risk he can put him where he wants in the run whereas uh organized crime has a few traits of his full brother king's gambit he wants to get that head up and just be a little bit aggressive he's a lovely cult 540 kilos of him and he moves well and he worked terrific this morning but he's just got to get his match play right so i think a lot of people didn't expect him to go from a sale maiden to you know two more hops to win a vein stake for his second start and i think he's taken more progression since then to now so he's definitely going the right way as well um and he's a horse that's probably at peak fitness for the sheer fact he kicked off late in winter um and now he's got a lot of time to do that so he's got a lot of time to do that so he's got a lot of obviously he's gone right the way through but both lovely cults to deal with they don't put a foot roll on the ground and um they eat work and sleep every day they just do it the right way for
Speaker 2you so it makes my job a bit easier so both will go around there on saturday yeah ethan brown was
Speaker 13pre-booked obviously for organized crime he wanted to stick with him yeah and obviously mark zara wanted to always ride uh mbube he's done all the work on him and he was keen to obviously commit early so it was good is eternal warrior better than both of them i'll be doing disrespect to blue bloods and the owners of that if i said that yeah he's uh he's a lovely horse he obviously won on debut uh he probably should have nearly won a blue diamond yeah it was enormous yeah if he drew a barrier he probably wins the race but they don't pay out on should have and um obviously unfortunately he he had a bad injury when he arrived to sydney and um he was obviously sore up there he's been in rehab ever since the horse has made really good progress but he you won't see him over the spring unfortunately right okay so it'll be more so an autumn carnival horse so um he'll just be basically getting ready for for the autumn next year and hopefully he's the the young horse the fresh horse back for autumn because he's a he's a lovely horse he's a really nice cult and as i said like to have three really nice good quality cults in a stable of a size of stable with 30 and work i think it's a fantastic
Speaker 2achievement for our team yeah as i said you got one hell of a team at the moment and there's a mayor called karen with two r's that i'm looking forward to seeing we haven't seen her since the 10th of december of 2025 and on that day on the booze she beat a horse by the name of sass appeal who goes okay lloyd so um how is she going and will we get to see her this week sometime yeah you will i reckon
Speaker 13i've entered her for geelong friday yeah morphville saturday sale sunday um you'll more than likely see her at one of those places um you've got to treat her on her own merits rather than the sass appeal Performs huge out of the race because I think Havisource, something gorgeous, was also a city winner in stakes after that. That maiden was very hot. We thought she'd nearly win that day. She was actually very good odds.

Speaker 13She was very good. She's a lovely mare and I wasn't happy with the way she'd come up over this last preparation. I trialled her and I just felt that it was all too soon after her win. She just wasn't handling life as good as she should have. Put her away, spelled her, and hopefully much to the happiness of the owners. They've been patient and she will return hopefully this week and she's going very, very well. She trialled good. She's worked well, but hard to place a four-year-old mare, Gareth, of her ilk. I think she's a stake source in the making, but just to try and get her to winning ways again straight away, this time of year is not easy. There's no free kicks around. So wherever she goes, she'll be hard to beat. She has to draw good, otherwise you'll see her scratched a few times.
Speaker 2Yeah, so we'll back out. If she goes to the races, does that mean you're confident?
Speaker 13Yeah, look, if she goes to Geelong, obviously she's going to be very hard to beat in the market. Everybody's seen her and everyone knows her. They're all waiting for her, I think. But, yeah, she's a quality mare and just needs to – I just want to get her back to winning ways before I sort of raise the bar with her.
Speaker 2But she's a – I think a stake source in waiting. Do we get to see Meridius this weekend? We haven't seen him since he defeated King Zephyr in that good race in the winter.
Speaker 13Yeah, he's flying. He won't go around this weekend. He's just sort of holding back a little bit. I'm just sort of waiting for his coat to let go. And I'll be honest, I'm trying to keep him to fuel runs as possible, working back from the Grand Final, which will be Magic Millions in January. It's actually not that far away. So Magic Millions Cups is Grand Final. Looks like I've got a slot for the Supernova and the Meteorite. Well, we've got a slot.

Speaker 13Well, I think my bloke's probably the right one for the 1,400 pack. It looks his sort of ideal race. But, yeah, like I said, I'm going to keep him fresh one run into the Meteorite and then obviously to the Supernova and then it's a month to Magic Million. So it's actually, it's a pretty straightforward situation for that horse. He's going really, really well. He's lightly raced and he's actually going better than ever. Okay. Couldn't be happier with him, to be honest.
Speaker 2You will see him. Could you do deals? You could probably do deals with two different slot holders, I reckon. One for the 1,200-meter race and one for the seventh furlong race.

Speaker 2How are you? I am very well. Now, I read an article recently. I don't know what publication it was. I don't know what publication it was. It was maybe TDN, I think it was. And one of your quotes, you had asked for your advice. And it says, "The more positive your intent, the luckier you will become." I'm a big believer in that. Yeah, I really believe that to be true. So what is your intent and a mindset going towards this year's Everest with the slot? Oh, great, great question.
Speaker 14Great question. Very difficult year because we're basically trying to handicap the right horse to run second, third, fourth. So we made a play for Headwall there on Sunday, which was unsuccessful. So we bid on him. And I think they're in negotiation with other parties. And we are looking, yeah, just keeping a very open mind. And we've had a bit of luck with the last three years. We've had a winner of fourth and another back. So just keeping an open mind and just really waiting closer and closer to the death.
Speaker 2Because it's great to have the champions. It's great to have a horse like Cahing Rising because there's going to be a lot of people that will turn up if they've been lucky enough to get a ticket for Everest Day to watch this superstar go around in Cahing Rising. But from a slot holder's point of view, it does make it difficult. Is there a situation where you go, "All right, then Beedman went well enough. We own him. We own him." Obviously, you're in partnership as well with your slot. But you're going to get $700,000 back if you even run last with Beedman. Would you consider him? Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker 14For sure. For sure. I mean, I think when you look at like the – if you look at the – you take Cahing Rising out, you know, he's run home on Saturday in like 31/6 of the last 600. You know, so I think he could – he wouldn't disgrace himself in an Everest, I don't think, based on his run on Saturday and based on his best ratings. He'd be in the mix of horses that would run well. But he's going to run in the Manicato in three weeks.
Speaker 12Yeah.
Speaker 14And if he gets to win in the Manicato, then he would be a logical horse to put in the slot. So definitely, he would be one of probably six or seven that we've got an open mind to as far as playing on our slot going into the Everest this year.
Speaker 2Yeah. Obviously, it's a lot of fun. Do you enjoy the process of trying to identify a horse and doing the negotiations? I still can't believe you haven't –
Speaker 14The two things I love most in the world are identifying good horses and doing deals, right? Yes, yes.
Speaker 2I was born for this. You need to take the camera and follow you around, Henry. It'll be box office.
Speaker 14Yeah, no, I really enjoy it actually. It's a great concept. It's a great success story. And, you know, it's lovely to have a race that – a race that, you know, these horses – you know, they're horses that we've seen race so many times in Australia. They're not foreign horses that are flying in, flying out, or horses that have had a couple of runs in Australia. They're horses that we – as Australian racing fans, we know and we've followed their whole careers. Yeah. I think that's what makes it so great. You add a horse like Kaiying Rising in the mix, who's a world champion, and it just – it makes for great theatre.
Speaker 2Yeah. I don't – you can tell me to mind my own business here, but we were talking about it yesterday on Giddy Up on the Means Test with Wayne Hawks and Johnny O'Neill. So, when you're doing these deals, I guess, with Headball, is it a deal like – how do you go about it with Kaiying Rising in this race? Obviously, it's going to be difficult for a horse like Headball to beat Kaiying Rising. So, do you give them more for running second and third? And then, obviously, there's $700,000 if you finish last, but you probably need some return on your investment. Yeah.
Speaker 14You've got to protect your downside. That's the key. Yeah. Protect your downside. When you know you can't win, which you probably can't, which you never say you can't win, but you know, mathematically, the odds are against any horse beating Kaiying Rising. I think Headwall's a great horse, and that's why we went after him. But, you know, I think you've got to protect your downside. That's the key to it. And, you know, he was a horse that fit our profile. He's in form. His pick rating was very good. The Matt Smith stables are really firing. You know, the stables are going particularly well. So, you know, and he's got that wait for age form. But equally, you've got to protect your downside. You know, like writing a check for $700,000 goes. If it goes the wrong way, it's, you know, it's certainly, you know, it's, you know, you can certainly ruin what would have been a good October if you're blowing up the gut to $700,000.
Speaker 2Yeah, so it'll be interesting to see what you do then. So that's Beedman going to the Manicato.
Speaker 14He'll go to the Manicato, and that'll be a good race. I think Baywalk's going there and some pretty smart horses. So it'll take a good one to win that race. I assume the horses that run well in the Moyer on Saturday will go there?
Speaker 2My Gladiola, correct. Giggy Kick will be there. It'll be a great, great race. Live Another Day's the boom horse, the Country Galloper from Warrnambool. He'll go to the Bobby Lewis and then to the Manicato. So it's going to be a beauty. I reckon the winner of the Manicato, or maybe even the top two or three, will be getting slots in the Everest if they want them. I think for sure.
Speaker 14I reckon the top three in the Manicato will perhaps all get slots. It's my feeling. It's my feeling on it. I think that's probably right.
Speaker 2Who's the most exciting horse racing in the Newgate Colours at the moment?
Speaker 14You know, we really, really have high hopes for Campione d'Italia. He came out of the two-year-old stage and was doing a lot wrong and still winning Group 1s. And he put in a clunker first up, which we couldn't quite work out. Like, Chris has been absolutely delighted with how he's been going. Everyone's been galloping him. You know, couldn't have spoken more highly of his work. So he'll trial on Friday more than likely and go straight into the Golden Rose. And I'd love to see him. I'd love to see him bounce back. Because he's a horse that I think has immense natural ability. Hopefully he can put his best foot forward in the Golden Rose.
Speaker 2So he's your Caulfield Guineas horse?
Speaker 14Is that the plan after the Golden Rose? I'd say more than likely he'll go. If he runs well in the Golden Rose, go to the Caulfield Guineas. And they're very happy with him. So I could see him running a much improved race in the Golden Rose. We've got a colt running on Saturday, actually, in the farm colour. It's called Organised Crime that we bred on the farm and retained a part of. And he's a... He's a talented horse with Lloyd Kenny. He was a full brother to King's Gambit. He's got a lot of King's Gambit's... He's got a lot of King's Gambit's kind of mannerisms. Lots of ability, but it goes a bit fiercely. I think we ran King's Gambit in the Poseidon. And he ripped and teared the whole way and capitulated. So hopefully Organised Crime can settle better on Saturday and find the line strongly. But he's a pretty smart horse.
Speaker 2We just had Lloyd Kenny on the show just before you. What a lady though. He said there's not much between his two three-year-olds. He's got Mbube, of course. He's the equal favourite in early markets for the Poseidon. But he did give your horse a good push. Obviously, he's got a lot to learn. But Ethan Brown wants to ride him. And he nearly won there the other day. He was a big price and he ran a big race. So, yeah.
Speaker 14I'm sure it's just like his full brother. If Ethan Brown, who's obviously a star in the making, a very, very good jogging, if he can get the first half right with him, he'll run after the second half himself. Just getting him to settle the first half is the... He's that horse, I would think. Much like the family. But no, it's good. And then we've got Militarise running in the Theo Marks on Saturday, who's been a good old stalwart for the team. And we've got a big crop of two-year-olds about to sort of have the pressure put on them over the next month or two. So, no, it's really exciting times.

Henry, it is an exciting time of the year. How do you think the Australian breeding industry is going at the moment, and obviously in the world that we're living in, what's the sales been like for your stallions?
Speaker 14Yeah, the sales have been good. They've been good, I think, particularly in the last month. I would say through the winter, we were down on bookings. People were sort of sitting on their hands, humming and harring, worrying about government tax decisions and the economy and interest rates and all those things as far as how much money they're going to spend breeding their mares this year. But I feel like in the last month, we've had more bookings through August than we've probably ever had in previous years. I think people were sort of sitting on their hands, but fundamentally they're going to breed their mares and bookings have been very strong. We've obviously got only one news day in this year, Wadden, who's been really popular. He's been really popular, actually. He's been great. He'll breed a big book of mares.
Speaker 2But all in all, the bookings are going pretty well. How do you think the racing industry is going there when you have a look at the, like, from a breeding perspective, obviously, you would get a strong hand on it because people are breeding. Obviously, they've got faith in the industry at the moment.
Speaker 14Yeah, I think the industry is, there's a lot of positives in the industry. I do think that it's contracting and we need to be mindful of that and we need to be probably working, you know, working all together to make sure that our industry goes the right way and keeps building and progressing and not sort of regressing. And so, yeah, I mean, it's really probably important that, you know, I think that we need to, you know, we need to really try and work out how to help small breeders better and owner breeders better. And, you know, for the big operators, I think everyone's doing pretty well, but we really need to, you know, the key to our business, Gareth, is to make sure that the guys with two, three and four mares are doing well. That's the key. And we need to probably, I think, as an industry, do better to help the smaller breeders because it's... It's not easy, it's tough, it's tough and they're the foundation of our industry. How do you do that? Well, I think you need to... We need to create better opportunities for education, better financial structures that can help smaller breeders. I think, like, we need to revamp bobs, for example, in New South Wales. Like, it's kind of... It's not what it used to be. I think we need to, you know, help small breeders, you know, achieve their objectives, be it via helping them, you know, from an educational perspective, but also from probably an incentive perspective. And we really need to probably sit down as an industry and take a look at it. Like, I think the, you know, the racing industry, you know, for the most part, is good. Like, for example, at the moment, Gareth, like, you know, we can depreciate a mare at the age of 12, right?
Speaker 12Yeah.
Speaker 14That's how the rules work. So, once again... When they get to the age of 12, you can depreciate it. If you bring the age of depreciation down to six, it would be a huge incentive for breeders to keep breeding. And if that was to happen, you know, that would ensure bigger field sizes, more turnover, et cetera. So, there's a bit we can do. And I think that, you know, in the industry, we need to really sit down and try and work out how we can make it more attractive for people to stay in the game.
Speaker 2Yeah. Extreme Choice, what a superstar he is. Like, how's he going? He's obviously expensive to go to because he's good and obviously, he has a limited booking. But what a champion he's been.
Speaker 14He's a phenomenal stay-in. Like, we'll never have one again like him. No. You know, he's obviously the only stay-in in the history of Australia to sire. He's the only Australian stay-in. He's the only Australian stay-in. So, Trisham did it also. But he's the only Australian stay-in ever to sire a Melbourne Cup winner and a Golden Slip winner. But what's phenomenal about it, Gareth, what is actually incredible is that both of those horses, his Golden Slip winner and his Melbourne Cup winner, run a mares that cost no more than $1,000 each. So, what's going to be fascinating now over the next few years is seeing how his progeny perform out of the better mares. Like, you know, for example, we bred a mare, Magic Time, yesterday. Phenomenal mare of Yule Longs. And, you know, he's breeding mares of ours that are Group 1 winners and producers. And, you know, he's got Lady of Camelot going to him. And the quality of mares he's covering now, he's covering the absolute cream of the cream. So, I just can't wait. The next decade of his life is the most exciting because the quality of mares, the average mare they've got for $1,000 to $1,000,000.
Speaker 2Yeah, stay with us, Henry. I'm going to take another break. But I want to ask you a few more about your different stallions. But I don't think Extreme Choice, we're getting too many. Speaker 2with gareth hall welcome back to giddy up gareth hall with you busy hour coming your way we've got the midweek masterclass team not far away as we try and find you some winners on a wednesday afternoon but my special guest is the managing director of newgate in henry field um henry we're just having a chat about extreme choice um so how many mares can he serve now in a season
Speaker 14so basically one mare a day we're working him on so and and that's he's got a he's got a major issue with his libido yeah um and so you know he he breeds one a day and if we keep him to one a day then he he goes into the shed and he and he and he um and he handles he handles that and uh um and and we've had a great success like his percentage striker out of getting mares in fall now is excellent compared to what it was but we just can't overwork him and um uh we've we've had actually a one of the the the the probably the most highly regarded stay in fertility specialist out from colorado for the last uh a few weeks ago for the week who watched him recover you know um get ready and get set up for the season and and test his semen and and that type of thing so so we try to we certainly try to to get all the best specialists in the world studying him and um and and every every extra pregnancy we get is is obviously worth a huge amount to us so so you know it's um yeah it's it's it's he's a phenomenal stay in my so just lucky to have him yeah do you think he can improve that well i don't think he can improve greatly but i think if we can get like yeah we're going to improve him three percent four percent you know by you know and it's and it's you know an extra an extra couple of mares in foley you know it's three hundred and fifty thousand dollars so he's the most expensive stay and it's ever stood in australia service fee and he's he's every day he's got one mare you know he breed one mare and he's got three mares looking for one spot so he's the demand for the demand for his service is huge um but we're just lucky to have him and and as i said like from do what he's done you know he he's i think one in every 25 he's run as a group one when there's one in every 14 of his colts to go to the races end up being commercial stallions he's got the highest stakes runners ratio of any stadium in the southern hemisphere um he's just an amazing so and he's done that as i said before he's done it all out of all out of for the most part pretty moderate pretty moderate pretty average pretty basic mares because when he was deemed to be subvertile for the first four years we just wanted to get some runners some soldiers on the ground right so we basically gave nominations away for free so a lot of the good horses that are bred that are bred in bred by extreme choice have been bred by them that we've seen race well a lot of them were out of basic giveaway nominations just free nominations that people given because we just they were doing us a favor by giving the horse a few few poles on the ground and giving him some runners so he's just an extraordinary sire wow what a story he is
Speaker 2and we get to see these type of stories with these stones and they can have a more interesting career he was a very good horse extreme choice but a more interesting fascinating career off the track like that is resilience um at its very best in a way with extreme choice
Speaker 14with what he's amazing so i'll tell you something else he's the smallest i would say without exaggeration he's the smallest stallion in the hunter valley wow he's actually 15 he'd be maybe just over 15 hands he's he's tiny but he's got a huge action he's got a great temperament i'll tell you something else is extraordinary about extreme choice given i watch you know most basically every one of his progeny run they very very rarely get beaten in a photo finish yeah um if if you're if you're back to an extreme choice and it's a it's in a stretch duel with something else 50 meters out from the post you can almost count your money because you've got a big head and they just put their head down and i think that's something which you know stallions pass on to their progeny if they've got that absolute desire and will to win um it seems to really you know it's something that is highly hereditable and and and um yeah no he's um i just wish he i just wish he he liked i wish he i just wish he liked he he liked uh the breeding shed more because um but but but we're lucky to have him and we manage him with you know the hopefully because of how we manage him we have great community for us and that can be a very important part of the story he's only he's only just turned
Speaker 213 so he's got many many years ahead of him i reckon it'd be interesting conversations with your team there at new gate how you do manage him because um so how do you go about choosing the mares that go to him now is it because you look after your good clients you try and get the the group one mares so how does that all work now well well we have we have a we have a really good
Speaker 14shareholder base in the horse yeah um and and and so so obviously we we you know we we we can only breed a certain amount of times with each year can only get you know a certain amount of covers a year because it's so he's so restricted but we'll you know usually we would look to go through the shareholder mares and then and then we'll try and breed those um we have then you know some outside mares that all come to the farm so the most important thing they all come to the farm and then i'll tell you what we read the mare that we think is the most likely to go and fall is a mare that we think is the most likely to go and fall is a mare that we think is the most likely to go and fall is a mare that gets bred so we have a vet that vets them like he's vetting them all the time like basically on the hour here and looking at looking at their their reproductive um yeah how they're how they're is there any fluid inside them how far they are from ovulation and trying to basically you know it's a bit like it's a bit like you know betting on horses you're trying to handicap handicap which which out of the three or four mares lining up is the most likely mare to go and fall and and then that generally is the mare that gets bred um but certainly we you know we have a we have a sort of protocol in place to make sure that um you know we do the best for each each and every share on the horse too so so it's it's it's not easy and and it's it's it's it's really quite stressful because there's so much riding on it but but you know every time we have a live fault one in the following unit by extreme choice it's certainly um it certainly gives us a lot of joy and the team a lot of joy and and and you know every every single day because you know we're getting one scan result back a day every day i get the phone call from from jim carrey and i'm like oh my god i'm going to fall i'm going to fall i'm going to fall whether the mare was in fall or not in fall on that particular day to extreme choice and and that can very much dictate my mood for the day so jim carrey he's probably the most famous
Speaker 2type of farm manager going around these days jimmy carrey we might we might have to get him on the
Speaker 14show one day oh you should i'll tell you what he's uh he's he's i don't think he's a better farm manager in the country in fact i'm sure there's not he's he's a gifted farm manager but he's also one of the most gifted chefs you ever seen too okay oh my goodness you've never seen a guy cook unbelievable so we had we had um a few people over last night for dinner and then you know he's amazing how he cooks but just a phenomenal horseman and um phenomenal horseman jim and and and and really a uh a huge asset to the team and and and you know at the end of the day um you know he put so much of his heart and soul into into managing those mares for extreme choice and and certainly
Speaker 2for him we wouldn't be getting the results we're getting you've got a very interesting roster i'm out for middle distance stars he's a cox plate champ he's by star spangled banner and boy hasn't he done a job we had anthony myth and tell us the story about star spangled banner and it is one of the great stories as well with the job that he's been able to do especially now in europe um but what are you expecting from state of rest in this country well so it's very interesting because
Speaker 14because he had he had some uh very very attractive first yearlings we were made up to 440 000 and and actually we've got three or four trainers telling us they really like what they've got buying the two-year-olds that you wouldn't expect but you know they're hard they're hard work the middle eastern sources even though he was a cox plate winner and an exceptional exceptional four-time global girl winner it's you know the demand for the service fees is not easy breeders breeders certainly you know that it's you know they're they're not the preferred um type of horse to breed the middle eastern horse by the by the breeders which are our customer base so so so we're going to give him a year off because this year which is fourth season we've given him one year off he'll definitely come back to australia next year 100 it will bring him back next year we just wanted to give him a year off because his people are very very low and we think that he's a horse that's got a fair bit of upside so we thought if we're going to rest him this is probably the year to do it but the minute we told irt we're going to rest the horse he's just had a winner after winner over in europe and he's got two or three very very smart ones uh like i think i think we we cancelled the shipment uh and then the next day he had like an eight length winner or something so so um but that's how that's how it works but he's certainly shaping up as a horse that yeah he was a really good horse it's just there you know the the you know we are like whatever whatever you know articles have been written about the breeding stays victorian derby all the rest of the reality is we are a nation that breeds fast horses we're famous for breeding fast horses what and that's also what our market's built around and and and so so so you know there's definitely a place for these really high level middle eastern sources and i love them i absolutely love them but but you know you know that certainly they're not as easy to get outside mares to as as the golden simple would be
Speaker 2or the or the cool more stud stakes when it would be are we getting to dangerous territory with that mindset then going forward especially like if you're trying to buy horses for longevity and getting horses ready to go because um it's not easy to buy like brett like a you try and buy a easy to buy one of those horses at the end of the day.
Speaker 14I think one of the issues is that if you breed a staying horse, if you breed to a middle-distance horse, you take the foal, then you've got to grow it out. It takes a long time to get into the races. What we know is that the European horses at this present point in time are a superior staying horse, right? Pound for pound, they're a superior middle-distance horse. We know that. And we know that our speed horses are better than theirs, right, as a general rule. So the issue, I suppose, is that you have all these European horses shipping in when they're three- and four-year-olds. And so you can breed the middle-distance horse, the staying horse. You can spend years and years growing it out. You can get it to the races. It might be half a smart horse. But the problem is that then you're going against racing against the Australian breds to racing against all the overseas breds. And it's very difficult. And the reality is that the European horses, let's face it, if you want to buy a good middle-distance horse, at the moment they're a better product and they're expensive. But you buy a ready-made horse. And so it's difficult. I think where there's real opportunity is probably breeding horses that are the Sprinter Mylar types that have more longevity. So you look at a horse like Overpass, for example, like those types of horses, or Headwall, or all these types of horses, the Jeveris-type horses, that can race three-, four-, five-, six-, seven-year-olds that are not going to get knocked off by the European horses once they turn four, as a generalisation.
Speaker 2I've got a couple of questions before we let you go, mate. I see that you're getting into the ready-to-run market now, that you'll be sending a few horses to the English ready-to-run, but you're going to be sending a few horses to the British ready-to-run, and then you're going to be sending a few horses to the British ready-to-run. Do you think that could be more of the future, regarding that people that are looking at these horses, they know that they can run, the turnaround isn't as long, and at least you can have a bit more information in front of you that you can suggest, well, this horse can gallop a little bit, and then I'd rather pay maybe a little bit more for them, or have a little bit more of an idea if they can gallop than, say, buying them as a yearling.
Speaker 14Totally. I think, Gareth, I think the breeze-up ready-to-run market in Australia has got more scope and capacity and upside than any other market. You know, America, Europe, and even New Zealand, to a lesser degree, have really done exceptionally well with their two-year-old ready-to-run horses, and there's absolutely no reason. Australia should be, we should be brilliant at this. We should be the best in the world at it. We've got great horsemen, great finders, man, it's great prize money. We've got Asia on our doorstep. There's no reason for, like, the advantage you have watching a horse gallop, even, let me tell you, so we go and buy 20 colts here at the yearling sales, right, and we buy beautiful horses, we buy lovely horses, we've had a lot of success, I think we've had 15 stallions come through our colts program in the last 10 years, right? But if you go buy them, and then, you know, a few months later we break them in, we'll trot them up, right, which we do with our vet, Johnny Walker, and I can tell you this, the horses, the trot with the magnificent actions, and you look at the move, even just trotting up three days after the yearling sales, the indication you have then as to which your better horses are going to be are massive, I think, massive. Like, the horses that really move, even at a trotting gait, give you a big advantage to try and work out which is going to be the best horse. But when you can go to the breeze out of sale and watch them actually work, watch their actions and their demeanor coming on and off, and all those different things you look for, you've got a huge advantage as a buyer. And I think Inglis have really done a phenomenal job. Like, you look at, there's four or five stakes when two-year-olds came out of the sale last year, including Tronvolt, who's, I think, a star in the making. I think the breeze out of sale is going to be huge for the domestic market, and I think that any Australian trainer agent syndicator that's not working at sales is doing a big disservice for their clients.
Speaker 2Yeah, I agree with you there. I think it, especially, like, Inglis has made some great inroads, I think, in the past, and I think Inglis has made some great inroads, I think, into their breeze up sales. Like, New Zealand are the leaders. They've been the leaders for quite some time. And when you have horses like Mr. Brightside, Golden 60, Warmonger, those type of horses that came out of a ready-to-run, I missed a few. Giddy Up Worry was one of them. But there's good horses that come out of that sale. The Asian market, they think it's a lucky sale, and then, obviously, it grows in popularity. But it looks like now, with Hard Kick maybe coming out of that sale last year for Lindsay Park, that it's going to be going to be, it's going to get a lot harder, I reckon, to buy the horse that maybe you want at these breeze up sales.
Speaker 14Well, what we want, like, you want better horses in there, right? So, you know, the stronger the market is, the better people reinvest the year after, and it can snowball. And I can see a situation in three or four years' time where we have 500 or 600 horses in the breeze up sale in Sydney, and it's a big market. And what should happen, Gav? What should happen, Gareth, is you should get really well-paid for the good ones, right? And you should really struggle to sell the bad ones. Like, if you've bought a bad yearling that's got a bad action, right? Like, you know, what you find in Europe and America, particularly, is that the good ones make a lot of money, and the bad ones you can't sell. And that's, you know, you take a big discount for them, right? And that's what should happen. Like, you should get really well-paid for the good ones. And if you've bought the wrong horse, and it's not much good, well, you should get, you know, you should lose money. And that's the risk you take when you pin hook and buy breeze up horses. But you've got to back your judgment, back your eye, and have the right people getting them ready. And I really think that, you know, there are some changes that I think English need to make going into next year that I'm sure they will. And I think that the market's got a phenomenal amount of growth attached to it. And especially being in Everest week, Gareth. Like, Everest week in Sydney, it's almost to be like Melbourne Cup week. It's not as big as Melbourne Cup week, but it's got that same feel in Sydney. Like, Friday just basically closes off in Sydney for the day before the Everest. Like, no one goes to work. They're all at lunches, and it's got that sort of Melbourne Cup, cup-type feel to it now. You're going to encapsulate a good horse sale into that market, which they're doing. I think that there's phenomenal upside for that sale,
Speaker 2and I think it'll be really exciting to be part of. I've missed, if I do invest in anything in racing, I would have invested into the Inglis online sales a few years back, but I missed the boat. But I'd be investing now into their ready to run. I agree, I agree, I agree. I think it'll go gangbusters over the next few years, especially if you keep getting results like hard kick, and you do it over the Everest week. Yeah. Yeah. I think it's massive. Will you be there this year? I will be. I don't know if we are doing our show. We should do our show, but it's cool for a couple of weeks. Yeah, if you're not, you should be. Speaker 3Probably, I might sound a little bit silly because you're usually very bullish anyway, but I just think my first glance at Sir Delius, I think he's primed and ready to go. to run a big race and really give she's an alibi race over 1600 meters he looks really progressive and forward this prep he's had two trials in sydney which he's both won and his work this morning was really good he looks really sharp i think he's ready to um run really well first up over the mile which is a distance he hasn't won at before and he's never won below 1800 meters but he's had two starts at the mile he ran second to lindemann in the challenge for last year and third in the very elegant behind autumn glow and aliena so yep i think he's going to make a real race of it on

Speaker 3wait yeah until the barry draws i reckon yeah i think that's a good shout uh chris was um speaking very positively about aliena certainly not panic stations there with the good mayor for the trainer i know a lot of people have been a little bit or a little bit concerned with their first up run but um i think chris is you know he knows there's so much water to go under the bridge he wants to have a ready to peak on grand final day over the two miles at flemington which is so far away um so you'd be backing in the trainer but i do think we'll see significant improvement

Speaker 2These Wednesday afternoon meetings are becoming a lot of fun at the moment with the Spring Carnival, of course, in full swing now. We're on the Kensington Track in New South Wales tomorrow on a soft five. The rail's out two metres. We're at Sandown on the Hillside Track. We've got the Chautauqua Stakes, of course, that was transferred from Saturday after the storm. Ipswich in Queensland, Belmont in the west, Murray Bridge in South Australia. And we're back on the synthetic at Devonport, the final synthetic meeting before the night season kicks off in Tasmania at Launceston. Kicking off the midweek masterclass is Mark Rode, and he joins us now. G'day, Mark.
Speaker 15G'day, Gareth. How are you?
Speaker 2Good, thank you, mate. What do you make of this card?
Speaker 15Look, it's probably not completely up to the standard of a midweek we'd expect at this time of year, but it's not too bad.
Speaker 2All right, then. It was a better meeting last week, wasn't it?
Speaker 15Yeah, I think maybe because it's Kenzo. Maybe they're just waiting a week. It was a better meeting last week for sure.
Speaker 2So how do we back a winner?
Speaker 15I'm going to start in race two. I'm going to back two of them here. The top two, in fact, number one, Caviar, and two, Unhinged. Starting with Caviar, he was okay first up at 1,200. They stepped him up to 1,400 second up at Newcastle. Led and was run over lakes by Concrete Storm, but they did put a margin on the rest of them. It was a very good run. And Waterhouse Spot Camp, stepping it up in distance again, which is always a good sign for mine, looks the obvious leader. Going to be around $5, looks a very nice bet. Unhinged, who was early. Favourite, a sort of equal favourite now. Didn't have much room at Canterbury first up. Going to just trail Caviar here and get every chance. I can't see it being a hot speed either. Joe McDonald hops on. A couple of others. Things in the market like Beaches and True Tone, I just think are too short. They're going to get back in the field. I don't think that'll help. And Wonka, I think, number four, was flatted by a very slow pace last start. So I think we've got enough value to back one Caviar and two Unhinged.
Speaker 2So one and two in race number two. What else have you got for us, mate?
Speaker 15Just one more. Another race for me tomorrow, race four. Number five, Columbus. We're going to have to take a bit of a shorter price now. Anthracite, number four, has come out. But it was the main danger in my view. So he's probably more likely to win now. Columbus still can get around 270-ish. Problem with him, I think, he's got no turn of foot at all. So they have stepped him up in distance. He's by Dundee out to 1,800. Barrier rate, look, I just hope they go forward on him. If they go back, I don't think he's going to run past him. But I'm sure they're aware of that. He's settled pretty close to the speed in most of his runs. He chased the dominant winner, Deep Pleasure, last time at Warwick Farm. Kept grinding away. Looks like the extra 200 will suit him perfectly. It's not the strongest race of all time. And I think at around 270, 280, he's still a pretty side bet.
Speaker 2We'll be disappointed, McDonald, if he's not listening to you on the way home from the trials there, Mark.

Speaker 16We'll start off in race two. We'll be on a good track at Ipswich. A 10-metre rail, keep in mind. Number four, we own a Chevy trained out at Grafton. A good third at Doombin. Two starts back and then have a look at the run last start at Doombin. Got into all sorts of trouble. Missed a start or ran into some trouble just after the start and then couldn't get a crack at them in the straight. Was beaten 3.4. Should have finished a lot closer than that. Wide gate, I'd say. Andrew Mellon will go back and try and ride this one completely cold. We own a Chevy, but, gee, it was a good thing beaten. I probably would say last start. So race two, number four, we own a Chevy. Race three, horse number five, Diamantina Rose. She likes Ipswich. She hasn't won there, but she's placed all three. She does like the short 800-metre trips. Two of her five wins, she's placed on four occasions. Her last start third at Eagle Farm, over 1,000 behind Bonfire Spark. That was a Saturday grade race. Before that, she bolted. She bolted in at Gatton. She bolted in at Kilcourt, and she bolted in again at Gatton. So from that gate with no weight, very hard to beat. Race three, number five. And we'll go to race seven. Number four, Yowery. One for Tony Golan and Bella Youngberry. Now, Yowery's had quite a few runs this prep, but I did like the third here last time, over 800 metres. I like the way that he finished off there. Back to the longer triple suit. Gets that claim for Bella and looks well placed. So race seven, number four. And just a saver on three, Gemeldy there, too. He ran a cracking race. He ran a cracking race at Toowoomba last start, but draws a wide gate. So probably goes back. Over 10 metre rail, that might be a problem. So a couple of dollars each way, Gemeldy. But Yowery, the main play in that last race. And I'm going to go right out of my lane here, Gareth. Am I allowed to do that? Yes, 100%. And I just heard Mark talk about race two at Randwick tomorrow, the Kenso track. And I know he gave a mention to this horse, number six, True Tone. I absolutely loved that debut run at the Provincials in New South Wales. That was at Kembla on day two. The last 200 metres was huge. By done deal, gets an extra 350 metres. There's nine in the race at the moment. You can back it each way.

Speaker 17Oh, yeah. How good did they come up? Plenty of red wine and cigars been smoking over the last year or so. Yes. Anyway, we're back off the red wine and cigars for a while and back in the full punting this spring. And what a card we've got to start with Wednesday. Wednesday here at Sandown.
Speaker 2And where did you get your teeth whitened? You've got to give her a plug.
Speaker 17Oh, yes. Son Ria, teeth whitening in Collingwood. Go see Bec. She's the absolute best.
Speaker 2Yeah. All right, then, Mylo. Love it. Now, what are we doing? What are we backing tomorrow?
Speaker 17We're going to... I just want to keep an eye on a couple early. Now, mindful of the track, here's currently a soft seven. We're expecting some rain between 3 and 6am tomorrow morning. So, depending on where the track gets, we've got to keep an eye on that early. I want to mention, we've seen a couple of these three-year-olds early on in the day. So, race number two, there's a horse here, number six, full confidence. I've really enjoyed what it's done at the jump out. It's on debut for the McAvoys and Harry Coffey. Regal Ambition, we haven't seen for some time. And it will probably start favourite with bet 3, 6, 5. So, I'm going to back full confidence and have a savour on Regal Ambition. And hopefully, I can get the day underway started well. We move to race number five. Interested to see these three-year-olds here. Tales of Time, this three-year-old colt for Ben Mellum and Clint McDonald here. It's currently better than even money and looks a one to beat. But again, Jack Aranda's the horse that's going to be proven on a wetter surface. So, look, it's backing the one if we probably stay in the soft range or we can see if we can sort of back the two to win the same amount, the one and the two, if it gets a little wetter. Where we start to really get interesting is we'll go to the Chautauqua now. Persian Spirit's been heavily backed, draws low. Harry Coffey, we saw what it did last start. But if you actually go back and have a look, that run of Warnie was nothing short of super. He was the fastest last 400, 200 of any horse in that race. He was flying late. Mark Zara aboard here this time. And we're getting probably 420 with bet 3, 6, 5. Now, Tennessee bound looks like the horse will probably want to try to lead at 54 kilos. Persian Spirit's going to be up there somewhere. If Zara can get Warnie close enough, he's going to be running over the top of these over the 1,300 metres. And just that extra 100 metres, I would have loved if it was 1,400. But he's going to be a really good bet in race number seven. We're going to go with the three warning. And then we move to race number eight. And this is another interesting one where we're going to take on the favourite here, Changing Colours. Now, I know this horse has performed in wet ground. It's very, very short, though, at the price. The horse I want to be with is Castle on Hive Cliff Brown. Now, I've followed this horse for a long time. Go back to that. That Sandown Heavy Eight run had 54 and a half kilos there. Was mowing down Stay Silent, who had 55. Now, this horse goes up just a fraction in the weights to 55 kilos. Stay Silent's gone up to 60 with the two kilo claim. Gets 58. And we're getting $8.50 and $2.15 on a horse that was essentially mowing Stay Silent down. So I think Castle on Hive is well over the odds at $8.50 and $2.15 each way. So Warnie and Castle on Hive are going to be my two main. But I've got a big eye on full confidence earlier in race number two. And then Tales of Time and a Jocanda for the Hayes Yard in race number five. But a very, very good meeting. Look, the complete and utter best on the card looks in the last, in the clues for Paddy Payne and Billy Egan. He's got to carry 61. But I think with Bet365, he's still getting close enough to $1.95 for it. And look, that'll probably jump close enough to sort of $1.70, $1.80 tomorrow.

Speaker 18Yeah, very early, obviously. We haven't seen any markets yet, but there's a couple of really good maidens, I think, to keep an eye on. And one of them is one of my better bets, race four, number 11, Princess Daisy. This horse jumped out really well before a Morpheville debut a week and a half ago, and she was absolutely off the map, $8.50 to $3.80 in the opening race on that day. It was a significant pusher. There was a bit of talk that she'd run well, and she had excuses. She had good speed. She lost a bit of momentum on the corner and then had to switch back inside. She was beating 2.4 in the end, but I think from a perfect gait and no weight, I think she can turn this around. So Princess Daisy, race four, number 11, is my first of mine, and then race six, number seven, D'Amelio. I think you best forget she went around first up and badly held up at Morpheville. This is on the 6th. Same day behind Daisy Du. She was beating almost nine lengths, but she was just basically had to put a handbrake on to stop her running over the top of horses when nothing went right in the home straight. She gets a two-kilo claim for Jordan Weatherly, and she had some success in these colours for the Book family at Morpheville last weekend. So I think D'Amelio will be very hard to beat, race six, number seven.

Now, this Off-the-Track Carnival continues to get bigger and better each year, and it's very important for the racing industry because it does give opportunities for our beloved thoroughbreds to have a career in racing. And they do have a career after they finish off their racing career.
Speaker 19Yeah, that's exactly right. So this weekend at Bonio Park, we've got our second Off-the-Track Carnival. Now, this is our flagship event in our Off-the-Track and Equine Welfare programs, and this is strategically designed to be just on the eve of Spring Carnival. It is putting life after racing and post-racing careers forefront, and we've got an opportunity to show everyone, the community and the local industry what life after racing and post-racing careers are. So this weekend, we're going to have over 500 retired racehorses competing. You know, they've retired from racing, and they're so trainable, athletic, and versatile. It's amazing that they can go from one career to another. At this weekend, everyone can come down. It's free entry, free parking. There's food trucks. There's viewing areas, the lot.
Speaker 12Yeah.
Speaker 19And to see what post-racing and life after racing in Victoria really looks like.
Speaker 2So how do you know? If you've got a thoroughbred at home, if you own a thoroughbred with a group of mates, do you know if your horse is going to be any good at this?
Speaker 19Oh, well, that actually is a very good question. I think, look, the trainers in particular and the owners, they have a good understanding of what their horse might be good in. So it's a bit, it's literally horses for courses in that not every career suits every person. So it's really about finding the right role for the right horse. So that could be dressage because they don't love jumping, or it could be eventing and combined training because they do love jumping. You know, they've got a need for speed. And then we've got some really beautiful horses that'll be in the show horse classes, which is a bit like a Miss Universe contest, essentially. The good looking ones. The good looking ones. That's right. So it's really about finding the right role for the right horse. And the beauty of this weekend is we've got different disciplines. So whatever you're good at, we'll try and accommodate you.
Speaker 2And I've talked to a few people that have had off the track horses before, and it's not necessarily the fastest horses that make good equestrian horses. You can have a horse that can't go a yard, but can be a champion in the race. In this field.
Speaker 19That is exactly right. So a horse recently competed at the World Equestrian Games in Germany.
Speaker 2The world.
Speaker 19World Equestrian Games. A horse called Come On Houdini. Yeah. And, you know, basically not very good racehorse, but went on to represent Australia. And, you know, it will be shortlisted essentially for the Olympics. So you don't have to be a champion on the track to be a champion in the equestrian arena.
Speaker 2And they can be valuable prospects, can't they?
Speaker 19Absolutely. Yeah. So this horse of Sophia Hills. You know, if he goes on or will be going on to the Olympics and this world equestrian stage, like, yeah, it's amazing the value and the care and the love and amazing how they can essentially turn their hoof from one career to another.
Speaker 2Yeah. Like, is it going better than you thought it would if you get 500 thoroughbreds turning up to compete at something like this? It surprised me when I had a look at the numbers.
Speaker 19So we actually, as part of our off the track program, we support 200 events statewide across all different disciplines each year. And last year, we had over 6,000 entries in those events. 6,000? 6,000. And that's up 16% from the previous year. So there is a massive demand. And last year was amazing. The community and the feel of the event was just unbelievable. We thought it would be popular. But this year, when we opened the entries and it was sold out an hour and a half, I think we were all genuinely surprised. It was, we put on more classes. So this year, we've got rising star classes. Standalone rising star classes for horses that have retired in the last two years or less. So it's really competing against horses that are not long off the track. We've got bonus awards for the, I was going to say the oldies, but for the masters in the riders. We've also got next generation for the younger riders. And what's really important is we've actually got an industry award, a best performed industry award in each class, which is a cash bonus for licensed and registered participants. So trainers, jockeys. You know, permitted veterinarians, the like. There's extra bonuses for them as well.
Speaker 2Because now we see that a lot. I talk to like different, different trainers and I go, so what happens to those horses that have been retired? And some of the horses, most of them they tell me, go to the staff members that obviously love what they do and they go, I want to take this horse home because I've built up a bond. Yeah, that's right.
Speaker 19So on the weekend, we've got over 70 riders competing that are licensed within the racing industry. So the crossover is huge. And we've also on Sunday, which is going to be our feature event, one of the feature events, is our Melbourne Racing Club Foundation Celebrity Show Jumping Challenge. Yes. And this is where the trainers take on the champion equestrians, take on the jockeys. So it's one for the ages. And last year, the crowd was huge. This year, I think...
Speaker 2Jamie Mellon would be hard to beat, wouldn't she? That's right.
Speaker 19So Jamie Mellon, Celine and Dan Stackhouse are going to be the jockeys in the equestrians. Yep. We've got Amanda Ross, Stephen Hill and Dami McAvoy. And the trainers, which I think they're going to be pretty hard to beat personally, the trainers, we've got Matt Lorry, Lucy Yeomans and Charlotte Littlefield who are pretty established equestrians before they came trainers. So I think they're the dark horses.

Speaker 2Welcome back to Giddy Up. Gareth Hall with you on this Tuesday morning. It's right on 11 o'clock. Melissa Ware, Malware, is our special guest. The Racing Victoria GM of Equine Welfare. At Bonio Park on the weekend, a three-day carnival will kick off. It is Racing Victoria's off-the-track carnival. Over 500, or 500 thoroughbreds will compete over the three days. And prize money up for grabs is around $260,000 now.
Speaker 19Yeah, that's right.
Speaker 2So that's unbelievable. So, like, what is the, like, is there the Melbourne Cup of this three-day series? What's the best prize to win or the biggest prize to win?
Speaker 19So the beauty with this event is it's actually every class has the same prize money. So it's $5,000 for first, and then it goes down from there. And so whether you are coming in early, the grassroots, we've deliberately kept this event to be super accessible, super inclusive, it's very egalitarian, everyone can compete. But also, we've really focused on the grassroots part. So whether you're in the high classes or you're in the grassroots, the lower level, the prize money is the same.
Speaker 2Yeah. So do you find that more people now, especially the people that love doing this, are buying off the track horses? And who do the off-the-track horses have to compete with, in a way?
Speaker 19Yeah. That's a really good question. So, look, there's always been a market for retired racehorses and thoroughbreds. So even when I was a kid growing up, I grew up on off-the-track thoroughbreds and took them to Pony Club and competed at Melbourne Show and things like that. So there's always been a market. Now, just over 10 years ago, Racing Victoria created the off-the-track program to really essentially formalise and market the great work that's being done by so many participants. And yes, we are building demand, absolutely, but it's not to say that people weren't ever doing this great work previously. So we've really formalised it. We know equestrian riders, they can choose any breed of horse, but obviously we want them to take a retired racehorse, a thoroughbred. And so my job and my team's job is to incentivise and reward those owners and riders for taking those horses. So they could choose a warmblood or a stock horse or any other breed, but we really want them to choose a retired racehorse.
Speaker 2Yeah, I think it's such an important part of this industry. And the biggest challenge I reckon that we have in this industry is the welfare of these thoroughbreds, and it's important that the society see what we can do for these horses after they finish their racing career. Do you think going forward, obviously the prize money is really good at $260,000, but the advantage that we have is that this is a billion dollar industry. Is there a chance going forward that maybe the prize money for all these different classes to give, incentivise people getting involved with the thoroughbred in this part of the game, the equestrian world, we'll see more money put into this?
Speaker 19Absolutely. I think this, you know, this is really just the beginning, not only for equine welfare programs, but also for this event and the insatiable growth and appetite for this event. I think we've all been blown away. And there are so many great people doing such great work, whether it's industry participants, so trainers, stable hands, owners, but also so many off the track owners as well. And we know horses can live till they're, you know, well into their twenties and they might race until they're just five or six and there's 15 years that we need to be caring for and looking after these horses. And we know the industry does a really great job of rehoming and caring for these horses. Um, we're not going to take our foot off the pedal. My team's very committed. Um, and you know, yes, we have made a lot of progress. There's always more work to do, but I think if we look back over the last 10 years, we've now got 14 post racing programs to support horses. Um, you know, our, our equine welfare funds, you know, sometimes we differ from different other principal racing authorities and that we aim to support horses before, during, and after they finish racing. We're not just a retirement fund for when they finish. We know that, you know, there's nearly, um, between 1,800 and 2000 horses that retire from racing in Victoria each year, about 35% of those go to the breeding industry and the rest, they need to find homes, you know? And it's not like rehoming, um, a dog that you can put in an apartment in the CBD. They need land. The owners need, um, uh, the financial capability and it's a long-term investment. You might have 15 years, the little, um, off the tracker I've got in the paddock at the moment, you know, he's 21 this year. So it's, um, about finding long-term caring, educated homes.
Speaker 2How much does it cost to look after these horses, say for a week?
Speaker 19Well, I think we probably usually work off, um, between five and six months. So, um, I think it's, um, between five and 10,000 for a year, you know, if they're just in the paddock, basically, and that's really the, I guess, the basics of, um, feeding, rugging, dentistry, farriers, things like that. And so, like we said, it's, it's, we know that equestrian riders can choose any breed of horse. We want to incentivize them and reward them for taking a retired racehorse.
Speaker 2And how long does it take them, say, say if I've got a horse now, um, and it's trained at Flemington, it's retired, the trainer says, he's done enough. Um, he can't go on. He's not going to be a racehorse. Like, obviously you can manage that injury, but how long will it take someone to make that, um, transfer from being a racehorse to the equestrian world, whatever field he's suited to, or she's suited to there?
Speaker 19Look, it's really how long's a piece of string, right? You know, if you just want to ride up the paddock and, um, have a pleasure horse to ride around your farm, it's probably not going to take as long as getting to the Olympics, for example. But I, you know, in the past, and I know a lot of our retrainers are putting a couple of years work into these horses to get them to that really competitive standard. Um, yes, you can put sort of three or four months retraining with a professional in, and that's obviously, you're going to get a lot more bang for your buck rather than, I guess, someone who's just started back riding, who's starting to retrain. So there's a fair few factors in that. Um, and it really depends on what your goal is for your horse. So if you want to go to pony club once a month, or if you're trying to, um, qualify to get to the OTT carnival. Or Melbourne show, for example, you know, they become an athlete in their own second career. So there's a lot of physio, uh, massage, uh, dentistry, nutrition. There's a whole lot of factors that go into, to, um, re-educating that horse.
Speaker 2Yeah. Um, and were you surprised with how quickly this sold out? Cause it only took a couple of hours once the nominations came up.
Speaker 19Yeah, we, we were going to have the entries open for an hour, but literally it's, uh, for, for. A month, sorry, but literally within an hour and a half, it had sold out, you know, massive waiting lists. So, um, it is a super, super special event. Um, we've got lots of supporting programs around it. So we run a really quite big, um, clinics and coaching program. We support nearly a hundred clinics across Victoria each year. And last year we had nearly 600 horses come in for discounted clinics. So there is lots of, um, appetite and support for learning and education and transitioning these horses. Yeah.
Speaker 2Um, we can, like, obviously you went two to three days with the popularity of a carnival like this. We go to four next year.
Speaker 19Well, um, the sky's the limit, I guess. Um, we obviously don't want to overcommit and we really, we probably really want to cement, um, this event to make sure that we don't go too big, too fast. But I see this being, you know, a flagship event on our calendars, on the racing calendars and on the OTT calendars for many years to come.
Speaker 2Yeah. Um, so we have this three days. We have this three day carnival coming up this weekend. Who's the biggest name thoroughbred that'll be turning up there to Borneo Park?
Speaker 19Well, the beauty with this event is you don't have to have been a champion on the track, right? So as long as you're registered in the Australian or an international thoroughbred stud book, it doesn't matter what state you live in, you can come down. So, and compete. But we've got lots that, you know, probably, um, weren't that successful on the track through to horses like Without a Fight, Hartnell, Eduardo. Wow. We've got some big names coming down. So it's amazing to see these horses that were genuine champions on the track that are going to become genuine champions in the equestrian arena.
Speaker 2I caught up with Reggie Fleming the other day in Brisbane and, um, obviously he worked with Codolphin for a long time and Hartnell, he loved Hartnell as much as I think he nearly, he nearly loved Statenley. So, um, and Without a Fight's an interesting horse because obviously he had some injury concerns, but he's a Caulfield Melbourne Cup champ and he's got another life, which is great.
Speaker 19That's exactly right. Particularly these.
Speaker 2Opportunity to have a different career.
Speaker 19Yeah, that's right. And we see that a lot with geldings in particular as well. So obviously the champions aren't going off to the breeding barn, but to put them into these, um, equestrian careers is, I'm not sure we could have, you know, better flag bearers to show the care and love and the support that the racing industry gives these stars of the show.
Speaker 2Is there off the track horses that are competing against the very best equestrian horses in the world in a way? I know that you mentioned that we had one at the world championships, but are we getting our horses now that people are. Finding that they can compete against the, the, the, the better horses around the world?
Speaker 19Yeah, it's an interesting one. Definitely. Yes. And there's been many thoroughbreds over the time that have represented Australia on the international stage. I think what's interesting is that a lot of those big equestrian horses, like they were purpose bred to be equestrians and we are taking horses that were purpose bred to race and then they're becoming champions as equestrians. Like, I just think, you know, yes, it's good. You breed a good warm blood, but these horses have. Two careers and can excel at both, which is pretty remarkable.
Speaker 2Yeah. Um, nature's trips doing a good job as any.
Speaker 19Yes, absolutely. So.
Speaker 2as well show jumper yeah so there you go um i reckon get out there on i might even head out there now you've talked me into it melissa i think it'll be something that i've never really got into i'm a racing fan i love the horses but it's um obviously going to be something a little bit different and that celebrity show jumping challenge um will be happening on sunday so jamie mellon maddie laurie charlotte littlefield demi mcavoy and amanda ross will be some of the big names there daniel stackhouse will be there who will finish last the jocks oh i think you're
Speaker 19a brave man to say the jocks are going to come last they're very very competitive do not um are you competing melissa no i'm busy running around trying to run the event with my team um but in the future you know love to i know a couple of my team are competing um one fiona mcintyre she's our operations manager she's currently at adelaide royal competing at the moment yes drives back sunday night at athens
Speaker 2before she's down at bonio this weekend okay and if you can't make it this weekend the um melbourne show is just around the corner yeah so is there an off the track category there yep absolutely
Speaker 19melbourne melbourne show we've got a special partnership but also what's actually really important um the 20th to the 30th of november is national thoroughbred week we're still doing some work on that at the moment but that's when all the stables clubs retrainers um and industry participants open up their door for the general public to come through and see how racehorses are treated and cared for and really get in behind the scenes so that's a really great one to market in your diaries from the 20th to the 30th of november
Speaker 2well you're making a real difference melissa um congratulations with you with with what your team's been able to do obviously there's challenges going forward um but this looks like it's only going to get bigger and better the off the track racing victoria carnival so um if anyone where is bonio park bonio park is down on the mornington peninsula
Speaker 19it's only an hour and a bit out of melbourne it's a very good freeway come on down yeah not that many so it's easy to get there it's easy to get there just off the highway beautiful um we'd love

Speaker 2has been able to do with two darty he just continues to win this seven-year-old by de meriti won back in august the first of august um and then he won of course on the 15th of august and then he won his biggest ever race in the finally there on saturday defeating a pretty handy field with one of the great guys aboard in sean o'donnell and justine joins us now here on giddy up justine congratulations well done with him again yeah morning gareth thanks that was very good yeah like has he surprised you with how much he has improved in a way the job that he's been able to do this time around
Speaker 21oh i mean i'm not surprised that he's winning because i mean he's always showed us a lot of potential but yeah we just couldn't seem to manage you know his things that were wrong so yeah it's been a a fair old wait to to get him sound but um no he's showing us exactly what we
Speaker 2thought he had it's just a proven case that you got to be patient sometimes and um have some resilience and persevere with it and i think it's a good thing that he's been able to do that with these type of gallopers because they can reward you even at seven well that's how many
Speaker 21what i think he's had like 24 starts or something he's just very lightly raced but you know it was all because he had so many problems what was his biggest issue well the first biggest issue he had a fracture in his bent lock yeah so he had to have 12 months off for that and then um i don't know i think in the same sort of time he had like a hidden spur in the back of his knee where he couldn't see it on x-rays or or anything like that until we got him scanned again and then we had to get that removed but i think that was also a problem as well that it's just something we
Speaker 2couldn't find yeah and so um it seems that he's on top of all these issues now you've never really
Speaker 21had him better well no we've never been asked to get yeah um a hundred percent but now he is and uh it's good he's loving it and there's no signs of
Speaker 2any of those um injuries that have hurt him in previous campaigns that he seems to be on you yeah on top of them now and um look out going forward with him i guess what have you got planned
Speaker 21for him now well i mean he ran in the tab touch mall in a couple of weeks yeah and we just sort of looked how we go about maybe giving him a tiny little let up and you know um look for a race boom couple races boom at ascot yeah and do you think he can keep him going
Speaker 2maybe deeper into the year or is he a race by race proposition still
Speaker 21well he's been since like i said he's had that um all that injuries time and he's just sounded the yeah he's like i say he's lightly raced so there's plenty of racing left in him and he could probably just have a couple of week let up and
Speaker 2and running the that's got yeah um so that well done with him justine it's a credit to your your training to get him to do what he's been able to do um how many horses are you working at the moment um i've got 14 at the moment yeah obviously machine gun lots of babies lots of babies machine gun gracie was your star you did a wonderful job with her um what have you made of her since she's come across to the east yeah no well i was happy with
Speaker 21her run uh the other week so uh you know stepping up from a mile to 2000 she didn't disappoint so uh we're still we're still going forward i think for another 2000 meter race yeah was three weeks from her previous race um yeah but fingers crossed all goes so well with her but they're very happy with her and
Speaker 2yeah what do you think her best trip is is it the 2400 meters hopefully of a corfield cup is that
Speaker 21the dream with her yeah well that's what they're that's what they're aiming is the the corfield cup but she's trying to get in there as well so uh yeah um well you know at least she can run 2400 and she's been um competitive over there so
Speaker 2um yeah we'll just see how she goes yeah um sometimes was like obviously that she did a great job for you in in western australia sometimes you wish that you're over here still
Speaker 21training her oh you do what do you i'd love to be over there uh training it but yeah i'd love to be over there training her but i'd love to be over there training her but yeah yeah just see that isn't it it'd be nice if they had races for her here yeah yeah you just want to run those win those three-year-old races you pretty much get kicked out there's nowhere to
Speaker 2go no unless you go on a working holiday but it's a bit difficult to run two businesses these days i guess yeah just for one horse i know yeah um who is the best horse outside of two darty in your camp at the moment
Speaker 21i mean he's going really well you know running in the races that we want you know that you want them to be in uh i mean jazz session she'll come back to run at ascot shimonoseki she'll come back to run at uh ascot i think she can stay in a little mess so
Speaker 2we'll see where she can get to yeah what about the nun do we get on that calipron wednesday
Speaker 21yeah as long as it's not i don't think she's overly keen on the west so as long as we don't get
Speaker 2a a bit of rain yeah we'll keep an eye on what's the what's the conditions looking like at the

Speaker 22Yeah, I think Enver Ducifovic's in for a good day at Mowi today. And it wouldn't be the first time he's had a good day at Mowi. So both of my best bets are trained by EJ. The first of those, race two, number four, Marin. There's been some key scratchings in this race. Barrier one, he was beaten last start at Geelong at start two. But he was up in distance from 1,200 metres five weeks between runs. And the horse that beat him for the in-form bedroom camp, Torkin Stern, went to benchmark 62 grade subsequent to that and bolted in at Seymour. So that's obviously really good form for maiden grade. And his biggest danger in the market, Dalette, is a horse that isn't really proven or is unseen on a wet track as well. You mentioned that heavy track. So I think barrier one, he'll get the job done for us, Marin. I'm pretty confident in that race two, number four. And my next best on the program, King West in the last race, seven, number one. He was back and very wide behind. The sail rocket, main man cash last start. But in that 1,000 metre race, I thought he was unsuited. He's most suited at 1,200 metres. That's where both of his wins come. And he's another one drawn barrier one. This is later in the day. But I do expect Maui to have some sort of advantage to be closer to the speed. And I reckon up in distance today, second up, King West will all but lead these for a very long way.
Speaker 2So that's race two, number four. Race seven, number one. Your plays there at Maui this afternoon. Do you have a quaddie for assault?
Speaker 22I do, mate. Pretty strategic. So if you've got your pen and paper out, hopefully your pen's got a little bit of ink. Because I'm going very wide in the first two legs. So only seven races today. Race four is our first leg of the quaddie. One, two, three, four, five, eight, 13. Race five, our second leg. One, two, three, six, eight, nine, 12. If we don't make it. If we don't pass at least the first leg, I'll be pretty flat. Our third leg, just three and four in the third leg. Lean to the moon down from New South Wales, resuming with the Noble Camp. Good wet track figures. Excellent Bendigo jump out. The three and the four. Machinist. Machinist is a good wet tracker. And in the last, I'm standing at King West. Just one in the last.

Some of the best greyhounds in the country will run around low 25 seconds. For a greyhound of her inexperience, I thought it was a super run, and I think she'll be incredibly hard to beat. Again, race eight, number eight. Also, race 10, number eight, Jane's Jet. This greyhound absolutely flew around the 390 last start. Back over the 457 here, got a solid record off wide draws, and I think those two girls will be incredibly hard to beat. Race eight, number eight, race 10, number eight. Just quickly. We'll talk about it tomorrow, about the Ron Hawks World Cup. Your girl, Miss Envy, has been a drifter, $1.85 out to $2.20 after her shock loss on Saturday. Speaker 23Yeah, tomorrow night, Adam. We're deciding to have her back on the track, a little freshen up after a Queensland campaign, but it's going to be a tough task. Like, Gates' gem's got the draw over her, so she's going to have her work cut out.

Speaker 23Yeah, there's a good bunch there. You know, I'm Wilmer, and you hate to get name in ones, but, yeah, they're going to be a good bunch, and, you know, I reckon they'll push forward right through the ranks into the open-class races towards the end of the year as well.
Speaker 26Yeah, so Vic bread, obviously. We've got the Pacers finals coming up on Saturday night.
Speaker 2Draws aren't out yet, are they?
Speaker 26No, they'll be out any minute now. I'll keep refreshing while we're on air. But I think, you know, naturally, Emma Stewart and Clayton Tonkin dominated. This is a series that they've dominated like no other. Some stats I dug out this morning. Over the last decade, there's been 40 finals for two- and three-year-old Pacers, Gareth, and they've won 25 of them. I mean, that's... It's incredible, but I think the Alan McDonough side story is really good too. He obviously works for them, but has a few himself in work, one of the most popular blokes in the game. And also, I think this, Karen Manning's having a hell of a year, isn't she? You know, she was such a big part of the end of Dominion with Love Me Too, and it looks like she could have three really good drives in these finals in some high, most exciting, and my better half on Saturday night as well.
Speaker 2Paddy, any chance that you could get a few more paces in these VicBread finals?
Speaker 23Yeah, I know, Jay, it's not ideal. But yeah, we're always working on it. But yeah, definitely could do better.
Speaker 2It's astonishing, really, the success rate of Stuart and Tonkin, especially in these VicBread races. They are very hard to beat.
Speaker 26Yeah, and just time and time again. I mean, we've, you know, over the years we've seen some stables have diamonds. We've seen some prominence, haven't we? But particularly when it comes to this VicBread Breeders' Crown time, they did set themselves for the back half of this year, though, didn't they? And they also didn't have the Brisbane carnival they would have liked to have had. That, by their standards, that was a, I'd say, very disappointing carnival for them.
Speaker 2They do concentrate on these series and these juvenile races because they haven't had the success with their, they've had good success with open class horses, but you would probably think that when you have a look at their Grand Circuit record that they would have a lot of success. That they would have more success, especially with the success that they've had with their juveniles over the journey.
Speaker 26Yeah, and of course, Bayer Biscay looked like he was going to be a horse to run in all the big races. He's having a stint at Alaba Stad. They'll try and get him back, but it's a wait and see on him. But, yeah, I'd be interested, like, Will's back in action. And, Will, you were part of that free-for-all last Saturday night. He's just in beast mode, Captain's Knock, and he's on the back up again this week.
Speaker 28So, yeah, he's always proved throughout his whole career, Adam, if he's in the zone, he's nearly any horse in the country has struggled to beat him if he gets, you know, the right draws and stuff. When he was airborne through that series, the Carnival Cup series, he was the same. Like, he was near unbeatable. He set path over 2,800 at Walgreens, went like 52 winning, holding off Don Hugo and Max with easier trips. So, he's a great horse, and he has been his whole life, and he's close to the million, which he deserves. And, yeah, it's interesting to see how they juggle his career from now on in.
Speaker 2Was he going to the Victoria Cup, Gary? He was going to the Victoria Cup, but he's just going to have a, he's going to breed to a few mares and then go to the Victoria Cup.
Speaker 26I mean, the challenge is obviously keeping them focused on racing when you're doing that. But if they're doing it at the moment, it's certainly working, that's for sure.
Speaker 2He'll win by a lap, looking at the field there on Saturday again. There's Maxie in that race.
Speaker 28He won't beat Nyack or Max Delight by a lap, but he'll be very hard to beat.
Speaker 26Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2Well, at least about five metres.
Speaker 26Nyack's got that great gait speed, and, you know, you would imagine he'd be happy to sit on him first up, Nyack. But he was enormous in the Inter-Dominion. Like, he went to a whole new level, Nyack, in that final.
Speaker 2But would you back Captain's Knock now if he drew the pole in that Inter-Dominion? No, no. If he was in the form, like, if Grimson got him, say, a month earlier, in the form that he's in now, what would he have done in the Inter-Dominion?
Speaker 26Surely Captain's Mistress would blow him away, wouldn't she? Probably, but he's better than Minos, Captain's Knock. Yeah, but Minos was in the zone in that series. So, speaking of Minos, he and Swayze trial tomorrow. Dangerous. Yeah, dangerous. His main name is Jeff, they tell him. Yeah, but Kingman might be in the... It could be half a Miracle Mile field.
Speaker 2Well, hopefully Luke doesn't get sucked into Jason going 150 or 147. But anyway, it'll be interesting to see. Well, Luke likes to give him a hit out anyway. So, it'll be interesting to see where Kingman's at because, God bless him, I think he'll be winning the New Zealand Cup, Will Rickson. So, you keep a close eye on the New Zealand Cup champ for me tomorrow.
Speaker 28Yeah, looking forward to seeing him in action. Yeah, it'll be... As I said last week, the free-for-alls coming in at the back end of the year here are pretty exciting. So, even in the Victoria Cup, there's going to be a lot of good racing.
Speaker 26And we've talked about this before, haven't we, Will? But it's that consistent, hard free-for-all racing that has changed the dynamic of our feature races. The number of New South Wales horses that come out of those races and travel and win, you know, really big races in a state or even in New Zealand. Like, Kingman... Kingman and Swayze won the last three New Zealand Cups between them. There is no better grounding, is there?
Speaker 28Yeah, well, I think you say all the time, like, you can run midfield in a free-for-all, a strong free-for-all at any, really, Albion Park if you're racing against Sleeper Fame or Melbourne. It's very draw-dependent and same at an angle. Like, you can run midfield and then come out and win a huge race your next start. And, like, you can run huge races without even running in the placings. It's that hard when they're running. And, you know, it proves that you've got to be hard-fit when you come up against the big, strong horses that look like the last couple of years. Max Deloitte, yeah.
Speaker 26You and Maxie winning the Nullarbor, another example of coming out of that sort of racing.
Speaker 2Did you hear the big news out of Western Australia? Tim Gossage mentioned the other day the Leap to Fame is basically nearly ready to go for the Nullarbor. Now, nominations closed yesterday.
Speaker 26Okay. Yeah. Well, then we should have an announcement sooner rather or later.
Speaker 2That was the mail that Tim Gossage got. He must have been at Gloucester Park or something on Friday night. Whether Goss is right or not, time will tell.
Speaker 26Yeah. But he usually is. Well, look, we hope he's right. And as we said, it would make sense. But there's still the fact that Grant Dixon has seemingly shown zero interest in ever going there. But maybe it changes with no Cambridge and his last campaign of racing.

Speaker 23Yeah, she had a scan yesterday, G, and it all went well. Probably have to take things a little bit slower than we first thought. But, yeah, she'll be all good. Beautiful.

Speaker 23I would say so, yeah. Right. You could probably – like, if you really wanted to, you could probably have a go at it. But being the horse it is, I think – I think you'd probably take the time proportionally.
