Giddy Up Full Show (07/09/26)

The Monday edition of Giddy Up with Gareth Hall covered a massive weekend of racing across Australia and Hong Kong. The headline story was Ka Ying Rising's extraordinary first-up win at Sha Tin, where the David Hayes-trained gelding broke his own track record with a time of 1:06.11 for 1200 metres, winning by nearly eight lengths. Jockey Zac Purton indicated the horse still has improvement to come as he prepares for The Everest in Sydney. The panel discussed whether any horse can challenge him in the $20 million race, with Tempted's Concorde Stakes win at Randwick providing a potential local contender. At Sandown, My Gladiola finally secured her first Group 1 victory in the Moir Stakes for trainer John McArdle and jockey Jamie Mott, a popular result given their long-standing partnership. The race was run just before a severe storm hit the track, forcing the final two races to be postponed. Pretty Baby impressed in the Atlantic Jewel Stakes, while Evaporate won the So You Think Stakes. The Randwick meeting saw Lindermann win the Chelmsford Stakes for the second straight year, Bangkok Hottie take out the Furious Stakes, and Hedley Grange continue his good form. Fangirl finished third in what may be her final race. The show also featured interviews with Jamie Mott, Mickey Gannon, and previews of upcoming racing, including the Memsie Stakes and Maccabi Diva Stakes at Flemington.

Speaker 1on giddy up it's time for the melbourne breakdown with david gately and the melbourne breakdown
Speaker 2brought to you by woodside park the home of celestial legend brewing in the doncaster mile at group one level and tough in the randwick guineas at group one level as well speaking of group ones um he's a group one operator david gately g'day gator
Speaker 3morning to you mate i have no idea where to start today um given that intro what a great um recognition of bruce mcavaney firstly i've been lucky to work with bruce and i don't think there's any better um but what do you say about cading rising um i know it's a melbourne review but it'd be remiss of us not to mention one of the best racehorses i've seen well when i was
Speaker 2watching hong kong racing growing up clinton hutchinson i thought there'd be nothing nothing get close to me and i thought i'd be able to get close to him and i thought i'd be able to get close to clean hutchinson the best thing to come out of hong kong sarcasm on a monday morning hello to you it's not your strong suit yes i'm like i never thought i'd say anything better what what i have
Speaker 4been impressed with is your dedication so far this morning after arriving here a little early and seeing your morning ritual yeah and and how you treat your body as a temple yeah yes yes there's a lot that's consumed by the way yeah gator got me onto the hydro lights when you wake
Speaker 2up um so you have a hydro light and then usually i used to do it after you had a hydro light
Speaker 4had a drinking session but i'd um i just do it every day now yeah well um maybe you don't know if carling will need the hydro lights that was a pretty good performance but maybe he will but no it was a good weekend a lot of good talking points yeah feature the moya was fantastic but
Speaker 2we'll get into all that all right then that's gay to point out you got a lead with carling rising after he did this last night at charting
Speaker 5purton's making a true statement here 400 to go carling rising's five in front the rest must look up and think oh no not this again because the champ is now six clear of co-partner prance and then came magic control lucky with you 21 15 seconds split look out sydney he's coming back and he's coming back looking just like that carling rising beat home co-partner prance oh listen he's got improvement
Speaker 6there's no doubt about that that's why i gave him a bit of a push give him that blow you know we're trying to bring him back and we're trying to bring him back and we're trying to bring him back and we're trying to bring him on for the everest but he handled himself really well and he changed his
Speaker 2leg that's what i liked so that's sack purton talking to um tom wood i think after the race i think it was tom wood or one nick child nick charles um you were close yeah it was close but what a performance there hutchie in your time covering this beautiful game have you ever seen
Speaker 4a horse like no i mean um you know when you get as we know with rec with record times they're always a function of how the track's playing and conditions i think there was a little there was a minor tailwind sort of down the back and probably down the side and it didn't affect them in the straight um but and he got a very firm track but it's all the same all the same this is an unbelievable performance um you know i've already rated the meeting and it's clearly a new peak for him by a margin as well and he's carried the top weight as well and that's not even weight adjusted so it's some sort of performance and i i thought it was really interesting that zach you know zach was a bit he he had in his mind i want to test him today i want to give him I think a harder run first up. So we're closer to where we need to be, you know, for the Everest and, and just bring him on nicely. So yeah, it was an incredible performance. Incredible.
Speaker 2So he beat his own track record by about five lengths. When you saw the time, what was your first reaction? Can that be right? Yeah.
Speaker 4Yes. You wouldn't think that. 6.11. Yeah. Unbelievable. I mean, look at once again, you've got to put into context a lot of the, I mean, he beat the rest of them by about eight and they've gone to sort of, they've easily clocked their best times.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 4To put it in simple terms, I reckon the track was riding about a second faster than standard for 1200 and he's gone too fast, two, two seconds, basically faster than, than standard. So it's still an incredible win.
Speaker 3Gator. Yeah. He doesn't need any advantages on the clock, does he? He doesn't need fast tracks and tailwinds. That's for sure. But no, he's, I don't know. I keep thinking of Deion Sanders speaking to the NFL coming up this weekend. And as I remember, he was doing his thing that he did every week as an NFL player and one of the best athletes in history. And he was sort of starting to fade a bit and said, I think he's lost a yard. Well, he had one to lose. KU could lose, could lose some of that and still be, be panelling opposition. And, but it's not just that time in isolation, is it Hutch? I mean, he's consistently running these freakish times and, you know, I know ratings aren't everything, but to, to, to actually find one on the clock comparable to Black Caviar, I never thought I'd see that.
Speaker 4No, exactly. Exactly. Gator. And I think I did see something on X-Last, even Timeform, Simon Rollins from Timeform, I think had them up at 138 or 139 on their sort of stuff. So it's going to, it's going to sort of create.
Speaker 2Set all types of records.
Speaker 4Yeah, it will do. But look, it's exciting for racing in terms of that, you know, we want the stars of the sport and he is something right out of the box as we know. So it's, it's incredible.
Speaker 2So he goes into quarantine. I think he went into quarantine last night.
Speaker 4He went in yesterday afternoon, 3.30, two hours after the race. There you go. Or an hour after the race or something.
Speaker 2And so he'll be, he'll be sitting out for Sydney, as David Hayes pointed out in Giddy Up last week. They learn a little bit from their experience last time around. They probably had him a little underdone heading into that trial. And then he probably, as you would, um, you would. No better than anyone, Hutch. He probably wasn't at his best. Was he there on Everest?
Speaker 4He wasn't. I mean, I think they had a, he got away from that a little bit and he was up in body weight and they hadn't got the work into him. And that would look, there was a learning experience and he's still one that these things happen. That's what the really good ones can do. David Hayes was interesting yesterday because he mentioned that like he's had to recently move stables in Hong Kong and the horse, the horse adapted straight away, like in terms of his own stable, like he's so adaptable. He's got a, he's got a great, um, attitude, I suppose, as far as that's concerned and the travel he loved. Yeah. After his trip to Australia last year, like he said, he thrives that he's put on weight since last year. So he's put on another 30 pounds and improved.
Speaker 2And you're going to love Zach after the race. Oh, there's improvement in him. Like good luck beating him in the Everest. Like if you thought, well, he was ready to rumble first up and that's understandable. There would be improvement in him, but he's just done that with something up his sleeve.
Speaker 4It's still, I mean, he's still obviously, once again, he's got to travel things, got to go smoothly, but there's no reason why, why it shouldn't. And, um, yeah.
Speaker 2What price will he start with the whirlpool? If everything, if he gets here. Safely and does everything right. What price will he start?
Speaker 4I reckon he'll start about a dollar 10. Yeah. He might start a dollar. He might start a dollar five. He'll start shorter.
Speaker 2That's what I was thinking.
Speaker 4Like if, yeah. What, what price go to you'd remember back in the day when black caviar was running around and what, what was she going around and when she was sort of running in the top echelon of races, a dollar five, dollar 10.
Speaker 3Yeah. I don't see too many dollar tens from memory, but it's all here. Um, yeah. I remember tipping against you one day early. Um, so I don't think I'll go against K in, uh, in the, in the tab Everest, but, um, yeah, look with the, he, he looks. The definition of invincible, you know, I think of Martin Power when he was doing his thing and Black Caviar, obviously, and then along came Winx. I don't use that term too often, but he fits the profile.
Speaker 2It'd be interesting to ask Mr. Massara today if he still maybe would be interested in that invitational race with Kane Rising.
Speaker 4You've had a lot of traction over this, Gareth. There's a lot of talk. Have you upset people by talking of this invitational race?
Speaker 2No, I don't know about that. There's some people that say it's a million to one and then that we're making this up. Yeah, I'll have a dollar on it, a million to one. Only because it was David Hayes that brought up on his show that he'd be interested in the invitational race. So they're talking about it behind closed doors before anyone thought that this was their own idea. I'd love to claim it as my idea if it did happen, but I reckon there was a strong possibility that it may happen as long as Hong Kong would allow it. And they would have, like in Australia, they would have it on Golden Slipper Day or Australia Cup Day. And then you'd be able to go back to Hong Kong to compete in that international race.
Speaker 4Well, first things first, let's look forward to the Everest because that'll be a great day. And I've had a lot of people text me, you know, from everywhere saying, oh, we're going to make our way this year to the race because they want to go see it. So that's what the horse's good ones can do.
Speaker 2We'll get to Tempted in just a moment as well. We'll talk about her performance. And she was very impressive, but she's a $9 chair with about $3.65. He's probably still value, but he still has to get over here, he's carrying rising. He's at a dollar. He's at a dollar 40. Plus he did what he did there on Sunday after David Hayes had to have a media conference to say he's got a bruised heel.
Speaker 4Yeah. Any little thing with these horses gets blown up a bit, doesn't it?
Speaker 2But wow. He's just one of those horses that you'll remember where you were when you watched him, especially after that performance there last night. And I think once Mark McNamara read out the time, you thought, hey, that can't be right.
Speaker 4No, exactly.
Speaker 2He's made a mistake. Yeah. And now he's probably great.
Speaker 4I just hope, to be honest, I know, I hope obviously we see what he's capable of when he comes down here. They'll be more attuned to what they need to have him closer to his best.
Speaker 2Would you be scared? Is there any possibility if he turns up on a heavy track? Now, David Hayes said that won't be any problems for him.
Speaker 4How can he say that? Well, I think that's difficult to say with confidence.
Speaker 2Yeah. He says he's worked him, like even when he was at Lindsay Park before he started off his career. Oh, well, fair enough. We hope he doesn't go on a heavy track. He'd still probably win by five. It might make it interesting. Good. 12 minutes past eight. Plenty of text messages coming through on the Garrett's Horsenown text line. Good morning, Gareth. Well, there are racing gods and they shine down on John McArdle on Saturday. God bless him. Five minutes before the race, sunglasses and sunscreen. Five minutes after. It was a different world. So well done to Johnny McArdle. Shartin raced faster than when Gout Gout ran 1966 Gator and everyone broke their PBs. Everyone has to find a negative, don't they? Sometimes I, Gareth, where I've been a huge racing fan for 35 years. And yes, they watching Kying riding that or Kying delivering that performance gave me goosebumps. Um, it was the performance of the century. He could be the best horse I've ever witnessed. Um, there you go. Kying rising. I've no words, actually four words. Wasn't the race incredible? 106.11. That's from Wendy's, um, from Port Melbourne. Yeah. A lot of love from Kying rising. He's. He's only having the one run in Sydney. He's not coming to Melbourne. No, no, he's going back to, um, he's going straight back to Hong Kong. Cause he's got that path as last year. He's got that race in China. Hasn't he? I'm not sure if that's going ahead.
Speaker 4That he'll be, he'll have the lead up race in Hong Kong. So I'm not sure about the, the Chong far racing. Yeah.
Speaker 230 minutes past eight. We'll take a break. We'll come back and have a look at that Moyer meeting.
Speaker 1Join the conversation. Text us on 0 4 double nine 7 3 6 7 3 6 live across Australia. This is giddy up with Gareth hall.
Speaker 2Welcome back. This is giddy up this Monday morning and it's the breakdown. All thanks to of course, Woodside park, the home of the devastating winner of the group. One Dubai world cup. His name was Laurel river. The son of the size sensation into mischief, the feature race there on Saturday afternoon. And thank God we got there the last couple of races. We're moved to Wednesday after there was a big storm that, that hit sand down late Saturday afternoon. But thankfully we were able to run at the group one more stakes. And this is what happened there on Saturday afternoon.
Speaker 7I bird Roth fire. Next is extra galactic. Who tried to cut the corner further back, generosity, and then basketball rewarded giga kick with three behind it. Here comes the star. One of those cavalry girl, 300 meters to go natural fling on the outside, shown her head by gladiolus coming into it too. And. They were followed by extra galactic GGs, mistruth, cavalry girl at the one 50, my gladiolus peppering away their natural fling.
Speaker 8Cavalry girl, my gladiolus, my gladiolus, my gladiolus.
Speaker 2So my gladiolus gets there. Um, it was just a, a narrative that only racing can produce in a way. How'd she, you were there at sand down. Johnny McArdle came on radio Thursday and then Saturday morning with the boys on first word after he heard Aiden jolly describe how much rain that they had. And there's rain. So he said, I'm going to go to the races and we'll see what happens. And then I walked outside after I finished work here at SEM. Um, and I couldn't see a cloud in the sky basically. And it was, it was beautiful. And then obviously the storm came late, but another, was it 10 or so minutes and then she would have been a little bit of trouble. Yeah. Shout out to the, to the bomb as well. The weather bureau, they've done a great job once again.
Speaker 4I mean, um, anyway, we were thankful for it throughout the season. In terms of the weather conditions, but you're right, the stories in racing are amazing and I think a very popular win with a lot of people, because we know the relationship between Johnny McArdle and Jamie Mott, um, in racing galley, you don't see, you know, like there's a lot of highs and lows of various relationships and they don't always last, but this is one of those Hollywood ones that has lasted and, um, we wanted to see him get a big win and they got it with a, with a girl that deserved it to be, to be brutally honest.
Speaker 3Yeah, well summed up on a number of fronts there. Um, yeah, she, she's a ripper. She's certainly a ripper fresh, uh, and I took 10 tires to beat her first up last time in and he had to produce something pretty special link on Saturday, the ability to pause you up a bit closer, even at a thousand was probably the key given it was one of those Grand Prix races. Nothing changed the whole race was so weird. Um, for a thousand meter race run at a good speed, they all just found their spot and followed each other around. It was a bit strange, but look, she was. She was gallant, a Cavalry girl had the match fitness and a really good work tracker and she made her work for it. And naturally look, she measured up really well. Uh, the little queries going into the race were back to a thousand and her lack of experience, I sort of ignored those didn't thinking that I didn't think they were going to be factors, but turns out they both were. So, you know, I heard, I heard Jamie Mallum say something like that. She's just not quite, uh, you know, there yet. Um, and even, you know, some good judges saying back at a thousand, she beat her at 1200. I think Jamie backed that up as well. So as I say, she measured up well, ran well, but found two, two a bit slicker.
Speaker 2All right, then Katie, you just mentioned a few of the, um, well, Jamie Mallum speaking to the media after the race there with the beaten jockeys. Let's hear from the rest of them after the Moyer stakes there on Saturday.
Speaker 9Jamie Mallum, Natural Fling.
Speaker 10Yeah, look, she was great. She's still inexperienced and still immature. Um, so I was very impressed with her. Um, I think she'll be better over further too. I didn't think she needed it, but I think she got to 1200.
Speaker 9Now Mark's are a giga kick. I think a thousand, just a bit sharp. We're sort of back, um, you know, it's not rough, but crash into each other back there. A few of us and, uh, ladies just get all got away from us. Craig Williams, cavalry girl.
Speaker 11Yeah, her performance was brilliant. She was so, uh, cavalier in defeat credit to Tom Dabbinger trainer and all the team around her. And, and the owners had a great ride and she's now run second in group one at wait for aid. So she's really keeps stepping up every time they've asked her to.
Speaker 12Ben Mallum, Skybird began really fast and I just took advantage of that in a, you know, on pace dominated. Race the latest set up first for home or first foreign running. So, um, I think she probably wants a little wetter. She'll come on for the run, but I was pleased with the run. Brad Ruella, Rothfire.
Speaker 13Yeah, really pleased with those race just at a thousand. I would just be too sharp for him. He's not getting any younger, but I think that this today's race will sharpen him and bring on the manicota. John McNeil, generosity.
Speaker 14Yeah, she just, um, found them a little bit too sharp down the hill. First time under pressure that put me a little bit too far out of contention, but I thought she made up really good ground late.
Speaker 2So there's a beaten. Jockeys. Do we put a line through geeky now over a thousand meters?
Speaker 4To be honest with you, I know there was a lot of market support from a lot of better judges than me make a good case for him, but I just, I don't feel he's a thousand meter horse. I never really have. He got away with one barrier early in his career and, um, what happened, what sort of transport on the weekend worried me to be honest. And I know that you could have argued probably that sand down might've been a better track for it, given all those factors, but you know, the thing was in this race as well, and it looked that way on paper, there wasn't for a thousand meter race. It was actually a lot of sort of run on sprinting types and there wasn't a lot of pressure as Gator sort of, uh, well, as Gator said, it was the on pace dominated. I, they got away with this sort of first pretty cheap three or 400 at this level. When you get a cheap first three or 400, they're all going to run home in similar times and you're not going to make up much ground. And that's exactly what happened.
Speaker 2Um, he's $7 now Gator for the Manicato stakes over 11 other days, $3 and Bay whack a $4 50 chance. Um, your thoughts on geeky. Keep going forward now.
Speaker 3Yeah. Well, the, I mean, the, the challenge for her historically has been sustaining a campaign, um, and, and clearly she'd be bit more furnished now and a bit stronger um so she needs to still you know tick that box and run strong 1200 to win a manicato doesn't she so um there's a challenge for her i know with a couple of those runs into her camera she's had issues you know some some throat issues and so on and some slow recovery so there have been genuine excuses what else i think i don't know i was you talking about giga kick there i was talking about my gladiola giga kick yeah yeah um yeah no that's probably my bad i um thanks for listening the last time i concentrated on this grade four um yeah no giga kick that was my query going in as well um and i had the same sort of touch i've missed something here everyone's tipping it now in fairness to this horse on saturday nothing ran on so we still don't know but look i'd still risk him at a thousand certainly
Speaker 4into a prep yeah i mean he's there's some like i think bezzable rewarded might have finished long so i have no disrespect to that horse but you know like and there were horses that probably had inferior running conditions and i think that's what i was talking about i think there's a genuine like where do they go with him now is he it was it was a below par right they'll go to the medical yeah and i look i thought the good run in the race was i know extra galactic got badly hampered out of the start at the start and it put her on the back foot very early and i think she lost that spot where she might have got yeah and it could have been interesting had she not been interfered with earlier with cavalry girl i think shifted in at the start and yeah i think that's a good thing i think that's a good thing i think that's a good thing i think that's a good thing i think that's a good thing i think that's a good thing i think that's a good thing i think that's a good thing i think that's a good thing i think that's a good thing
Speaker 2cavalry girl to 52nd in a group one like what a job that tom dabinick's done with her amazing yeah etra galactic she might win a group one um yeah um generosity was probably a little bit
Speaker 4disappointing but the market actually ran pretty well because it was sort of back and wide yeah and just that last hundred meters if you get to see the drone shot you'll just i haven't gone right through the times but it caught my eye thinking it was you know mission impossible
Speaker 2it was pretty good through the line it surprised me gaeta would you make a point barrow one of our
Speaker 3this is matt from brizzy wants to know yeah look did more than enough in a race where nothing ran on you know they so completely inconclusive um in probably went as well as she could given all you know for that main reason race shape i think race shape is absolutely king you know
Speaker 2in reviewing races yeah the other big sprint race of the day was in sydney and attempted for kira was successful first up defeating headwall who was also very good in his first run for a year after winning the concord last year what did you make of that performance there by the mayor
Speaker 3um gaeta well she's got this brilliant change up speed hasn't she um you know it's reserved for really really good ones uh that that ability to you know from you look at the sort of the 250 300 to the 75 say um is just elite that top end speed uh she she doesn't sustain it for a long time and that's going to be her challenge running into k in um because he's just going to run too fast for her but um she'll could she'll acquit us very well against the rest of them do you know
Speaker 2it's going to be interesting with the everest now arch um is that ninja was announced there for my race also and michael friedman on channel seven there on saturday i'm tempted we'll get a spot with the godolphin but there's going to be a few slot holders that'll be thinking they a few of them would have loved for gigi maybe to finish a little bit closer because i've got no doubt jonathan munns would purchase a slot yeah um but them trying to work out a deal with these slot holders now to make some money or even to well you break even because you get 700
Speaker 4i suppose this was always the issue with um a slot holder type of race right it's fine when it's a competitive field and you've got a lot of horses there with with a decent chance but when you've got a dominant horse say if imagine if we had this slot race back in the days of black caviar a lot of people like well they're still good money up for second and third but it's once again it gets back to the deals and everything yeah it's an interesting situation that people find themselves in so i think it's okay if
Speaker 2you could dolphin you got your own slot because you're running for 2.9 to finish second you're paying 700 000 so that's still for sheikh muhammad a good payday really but um if you've got a slot trying to do a deal with the a group of owners to try and take on kane rising it makes it a little tougher so they might just go well we can't get the deal that we want we might just use one of our horses there's no chance but we're going to get our 700 000 back anyway so we'll break even yeah interesting times 8 26 we're going to take a break we're going to come back and have a look evaporates victory there in the so you think on saturday at sandown join the conversation text us
Speaker 1on oh four double nine seven three six seven three six live across australia this is giddyup with
Speaker 2gareth hall welcome back to giddyup this is uh the monday breakdown clint hutchinson david gately joining me here on giddyup all thanks to woodside park the home of celestial legend brewing in the doncaster mile at group one and tough in the round with guineas at group one level and don't forget we've got the macaibi diva stakes on saturday but after that it's the caulfield underwood stakes meeting group one racing and afl finals action from just 25 dollars we'll have the big screen there usually have the preliminary final it'll be played starts late afternoon that prelim so it's probably going to be hawthorne and brisbane i hope yeah what about your team brisbane well you know we're just one of those sources that um we have a bad run but it's like we have a heart fibrillation and then
Speaker 4just back us in our next start it's just like you can't explain how bad we were how about the results though i mean who i mean incredible
Speaker 2wasn't it last one and 12 man tommy papley se and tracks very own one of the greatest ever performances i think i've ever seen in finals football clearly i reckon his best match five goals but brisbane will play adelaide would start favorites and then i don't know gator would you prefer to be freemantle or hawthorne right now obviously freemount are going to beat geelong but then whoever wins that match goes like you can't underestimate sydney kenya but you got sydney at the scg or would you prefer to take it or would you prefer to take it or would you prefer to take on say brisbane at the mcg on preliminary final weekend well i'll tell you i'm going to be a very
Speaker 3nice problem to have but it's going to be really hard from 17th where my team is so um i wouldn't be overly concerned mate i would focus on what we can control which is pretty simple if you if you ever need further evidence of a collective mindset being king over anything else in sport this weekend
Speaker 2yeah yeah that's a very good point you make imagine if we could who would be a horse that goes a bit like brisbane of late well there's plenty of lindemans lindemans are perfect like he's pretty honest first up he looks like he couldn't win a benchmark 58 and then he does what he did there on saturday he's probably a bit of condition like a few of us um evaporate was heavily supported many thought this was a good thing of the day and this is what happened on saturday in the so you think asterix
Speaker 7well back with zambardo so regal zeus about to hurtle down corrigan dip 500 meters to go a length tanking up hands and heels at the moment two legs pinstriped evaporate under heavy pressure down the middle of the course and starting to launch and then freedom rally and zambardo regal zeus at the 200 meters with on the outside moving up boldly evaporate evaporate goes on by zambardo late then pinstripe but evaporate forges on hands and heels from shin and evaporate one pinstripe so evaporate
Speaker 2was too strong watching that race there hutchy um i thought she's lucky nine doors writer wrote a race here to get in front of shin in the early part and then i saw evaporate with his mouth open and he wasn't really coming back under blake i thought you might be in trouble here well i must
Speaker 4admit i thought after about four or five hundred oh we're he's further back than i wanted yeah and he looks like he's over racing this is not working out how i wanted it to but he um you know it's an interesting one i mean he was the class horse he was so well placed there wasn't he in that race he manned pinstripe but i mean if you thought pinstripe could recapture that thing to form from prior and previous run i should say and yeah it was good to see him when he was well supported and rightly so and he's he's actually you know evaporate gator like he's just one of those horses he hasn't probably got the cv he should he's been a bit stiff in a few races could easily read a heck of a lot better yeah i think that's fair and
Speaker 3a couple of times he has sort of underperformed as well um but when he has um been at his best he sat three wide i think in a group one to mr brightside and held on for second or third he went a great race in a in a golden eagle didn't he third to autumn glow so he's a damn good sort of second level horse if you like um but uh he can also have an off day and i think he brings himself undone a little bit there but look he's in the right stable to iron those things out and they're getting they're getting better at that i thought he traveled better on saturday than he has
Speaker 2sometimes in the past pinstripe was an interesting run like i thought geez he's in the box seat here the way that he performed first up but evaporate went straight past him and then on the lining was
Speaker 4coming again yeah that flat spot or i don't know did he did he wait and then go again you need right of feedback there but um i like the way that blake sort of rolled into the race early enough as
Speaker 2well on evaporate and gator cimbardo was placed behind vs sistina and a group one champion stakes can he live up to those expectations we had of him after that race uh look it was a good return he'd
Speaker 3been trialing really well um that race you referenced a bit tom hit nothing in the third probably not a gun wet tracker it was pretty wet that day if i understand that was that miserable um minus 700 degree day it was awesome um yeah but um yes i think the key to him at the at the top level, a really wet track.
Speaker 4The other high line is 700-degree, David. I'm tipping Gator was still in a singlet or had one somewhere handy.
Speaker 3Almost had to bust out the T-shirt.
Speaker 2Did you ever used to wear those skins, you know, those tight skins that, oh, you're always a short man, Gator.
Speaker 3Well, I couldn't wear them because I sweat like a heroin addict. They're not much good to me, Dave.
Speaker 2One of the highlights for me for the day was Pretty Baby, the Atlantic Jewel Stakes. She was the South Australian that had big raps on her, and this is what she did on Saturday, and she lived up to those expectations.
Speaker 7Behind those needing some room, so too Portanari wedged between fillies from Pretty Baby up the centre, then almost an angel and saintly dancers hunting for runs up on the inside, and she's coming on. Garner's a can, 300 metres to go, narrowly in front. Pretty Baby is starting to storm down the middle of the course, though. Pretty Baby goes. Up to Garner's a can and claims her, and they're three lengths Portanari. Pretty Baby, 100 metres to go, is searing away, and the South Australian filly's going to trot in. Pretty Baby won it well from Garner.
Speaker 2Now, she won like a good horse, didn't she? Like a proper group one horse in the making, Pretty Baby. When you were watching her in South Australia, she would be detached from the field, and we couldn't see her keep up in the early stages, and then she would finish over the top of them, but Gator, Jamie Mallum had her nice and close there on Saturday, and she never looked like getting beat there on the weekend.
Speaker 3Yeah, and I'm glad I underrated with her on Saturday, because, yeah, she was brilliant. Ran about four lengths faster than Blind Rays as well. I know relative times on wet tracks can be a bit tricky, but they're the facts, and the margin was significant. I thought it was a really even race. On paper, going in, it certainly was not that. So, it was a one-horse race, you know, second to fourth, a length between them, so outside of her, I guess it was pretty even. David?
Speaker 2Yeah. Hutchie, the daughter of Barbados.
Speaker 4Where does Barbados stand?
Speaker 2Barbados stands somewhere in South Australia. Okay, there you go. He's an 18-year-old stallion these days.
Speaker 4He's got a good one. Yeah, he has. I was with Gator. I underestimated how good she was. I mean, I saw the sort of figures from her South Australian performance, but when you watch, you think, well, gee, you haven't been able to keep up. You sort of, you know, obviously you've run good time, but where are you going to land here? And I just, I wasn't trusting of it enough. And after the race, it was probably one of the performances of the whole day, to be honest. I mean, and she travelled well for Jamie. She just put her in a spot and blew them away and ran time. So, she's a real deal.
Speaker 2Is it a case that our fillies aren't much good? Or she's the real deal? I think we've got some good fillies.
Speaker 4I think the Colts are pretty ordinary.
Speaker 2Yeah. Thousand guineas? Why not? Like, how do they beat her with her, like, stepping up?
Speaker 4Oh, well, I wouldn't go that far. You go from one extreme to another, don't you? You go from, well, they're no good. No, no, I didn't say that.
Speaker 2I just asked you the question.
Speaker 4Oh, okay. You're the form expert.
Speaker 2Okay, then. So, you think she can win a thousand guineas? I think she can win one. Yeah. Have you seen it?
Speaker 4I wouldn't be declaring it and saying she can't get beat.
Speaker 2No, I'm just trying to think. The better performances from three-year-old fillies stepping up to the 1600. Like, Bangkok Hottie was pretty good in Sydney, but I don't know. She'll come for a thousand guineas.
Speaker 4You'd have to ask Gator about her, because he's more over the Sydney stuff than me.
Speaker 3Yeah, look, I think the Sydney fillies look pretty good, don't they? But so do Pretty Baby. So, yeah, it's something I'd have to have a serious think about. But Bangkok Hottie on Saturday, you know, beat a pretty good field, ridden more positively and ran good time relative to older horses, carrying, what, six kilos above weight for age doing it.
Speaker 2It's 8.37. This is Giddy Up and the Monday Breakdown. We're going to take a quick break. On the other side of it, we'll continue our breakdown of Sandown on Saturday.
Speaker 1Join the conversation. Text us on 0499 736. Live across Australia, this is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 2Welcome back to Giddy Up. This is the Monday Breakdown. Let's have a look at a few of the three-year-old performances on the weekend. We'll start off in the Mackenzie Stakes, where Blind Rays was too good for Wolfgap.
Speaker 7Three and four deep, and Blind Rays made sure it got out, and then shooting break in Eurocanto, and then it got put to the sword. Wolfgap still last, closer to three. 3.50 out with Tornado Valley, and now Blind Rays made a line of three, and went on by two lengths shooting break, and then came Dusty. Blind Rays went for the doctor below the 200 metres and put up two or three lengths. Tornado Valley, then shooting break, and Wolfgap is flying home. Blind Rays, 100 metres to go, had a decent buffer, and Blind Rays an excellent win. Wolfgap a good run second.
Speaker 2Yeah, Blind Rays was too strong, but the horse, though, I think everybody wants to take home after that, Gator, is Wolfgap. That was a run and a half back in second.
Speaker 3No, he was excellent, wasn't he? That's a proper finale. That's a proper finale, no doubt, and Wolfgap was terrific. Obviously, they had a plan, you know, ride cold and find the line. Well, that's what happened, and Blind Rays was good, though. He gave one and a half kilos to the winner and travelled well, kicked on, and won by a decisive margin, nearly two lengths. The query for me is the clock, so they've run near identical first 700 to the fillies, yet had the races been run together, you know, pretty baby would have thrashed them. So, by about that margin, four lengths. So, these boys would have finished in that group of fillies that ran second, third, fourth.
Speaker 4Hutchie? Yeah, no, I thought the winner was, I mean, Wolfgap ran them well, but I thought the winner was pretty good. It was a touch keen, I felt, early on, and if they had have gone a little quicker, might have been better suited. But, yeah, I mean, she's one to understand that's pretty baby. So, I think her aside, there's probably not much between a lot of horses, but Blind Rays was me. It was resuming. It was a good performance. We saw him last prep when he was at the Anzac State. It was, um, Anzac Day Stakes or whatever it was. But it looks good for him, I think, you know, and he showed on the weekend that he can handle, you know, a wake track.
Speaker 2Closer to free is one of those really good two-year-olds that hasn't come back as a three-year-old.
Speaker 4Well, they commented, I think, in the stewards' report that it didn't see out the trip. No. And maybe, yeah.
Speaker 2Stopped too quick, yeah.
Speaker 4Yeah, so.
Speaker 2Back to the jury point.
Speaker 3And pulled up lame. So, he had some excuses.
Speaker 2But the jury is well and truly out and closer to free. Yeah. Yeah. The other three-year-old performance of the day was La Polo. This was the first race. Now, Tony McAvoy at a function that I was at recently said that this is the Derby horse. And he was sent around one of the favourites there on Saturday. And this is what he did in the first race at Sandown.
Speaker 7And then Madame Doubtfire. Around the turn, 500 metres to go. Glide in front of Ko Pung Yarn, who is chased along on the outside. Utopic future behind them. Signetti needing room on the fence. And then came La Polo brought towards the outskirts. 300 metres to go. Glide in front. Tried to dial it up. But here comes La Polo with a withering run down the centre of the track. La Polo stomped up. Race clear. Two lengths. Three lengths in front. And this is over. La Polo is going to be an impressive winner despite a bad start. Very good at the finish.
Speaker 2Yeah, La Polo easily. Signetti didn't have the best of luck. Found himself behind the leader there off a slow tempo. And then Glide was back in third here, Hutch. The winner was too strong.
Speaker 4Was it luck?
Speaker 2Well, he, he decided to head up, didn't he? Yeah.
Speaker 4I don't know. There was no speed on paper. I don't know if he would have beat the favourite. No, I think that's a fair call, but I don't think it was. Um, yeah, I look, I thought it was a race that was, it lacked pace. You're on the leader. You're on the favourite. If you, he stepped a touch slow, but I think, I think you had to go forward. I mean, what was one of the sections there though? Going nearly 14 seconds. It was ridiculous.
Speaker 2Yeah. You would need hydrolyte for that section. You need a bit of hydrolyte, mate.
Speaker 4No more than that. But. Yeah, I mean, I think it was, um, poorly executed. Blake's an unbelievable rider, but he got that one wrong. He got one wrong on Wednesday too, but, um, you don't want to see that. But, uh, look, the winner was good. Getting back on a positive note, the winner was really good. And it missed the start by three, but I think it, you can miss a start by three when they're going that slow early, cause he's tacked onto the back and done absolutely, they haven't gone that quick. But yeah, I thought it was a bit of a drop catch in the first on the favourite.
Speaker 2Interesting, Gator, that the McAvoy's think that he's the derby horse. He's by a written tie. Coon out of puppy love. So, um, it'd be interesting to see if you can get to a Derby trip.
Speaker 3Yeah, look, I mean, obviously pedigrees and everything. I saw a sprinting mayor when an Adelaide cup one, one year, but it doesn't happen all that often either, but you just can't rely on it. You have to take each athlete. I think you get their own, uh, on, you know, for their own traits and their own idiosyncrasies and strengths and weaknesses, so the wind was really good. And if they, if they're super confident, he's even better on dry ground, that's gotta be good. Um. But there's nothing on the clock here, you know, 20 links below average, the first section and overall time, some 18 links below. So, you know, I think we might've been competitive with them on foot.
Speaker 2Um, other races there at Sandown on Saturday. Jeez, Gavin Bedge could flying. Um, yeah, ocean bay and behavior brought up a race to race double. Um, cruiserweight was the interesting horse. He had big wraps on him and he couldn't get past Ivan's hero. Hutch, your thoughts there?
Speaker 4Um, it's. It looked like he peaked on his run late and that was what was in the stewards report and I think Ethan Brown might've said, like he almost presented to win and then, and then just peaked on his run late. But he's look, I think there's a couple of things there. He's probably not as good as the wraps were, but he's still a good horse and going to win more races. And he ran well enough, but Ivan's hero just got the right run on the day. And Ivan's hero was, went out a big price. I mean, he'd had form around, um, it was, it was a good run first up in a, in a decent race. I think it was queen Christine that it was placed fine. Wasn't it? So it wasn't, wasn't bad form.
Speaker 2Gator. Um, horses to follow and thoughts in some of the races we haven't mentioned so far.
Speaker 3Yeah, look. Look, I think Fundamental Nature was probably the best run in that race. Just that start was very, very costly to get as close as she did with 58 kilos. I think that's one that got away from us. But, you know, we lived to fight another day there. Yeah, look, I don't know how many more of these really wet tracks we're going to get. So we just have to be careful when we're going forward form-wise.
Speaker 2We just don't know what we're going to get even on a race day these days. No, apparently not. We're going to take a break. We've got a heap of questions coming through for Hutch and Gator. So we'll come back to those questions on the Gareth's Horse and Hound text line next here on Giddy Up.
Speaker 1Join the conversation. Text us on 0499 736 736. Live across Australia. This is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 2Welcome back to Giddy Up. This is the Monday breakdown. Thanks to, of course, Woodside Park, home of Laurel River, a devastating winner of the Group 1 Dubai World Cup and the son of Sire's sensation into mischief. Keep on sending in your text messages on the Gareth's Horse and Hound text line, 0499 736 736, and tell us your Simply Sensational performance of the week and why. The best one will win a $100 Rabira's Port Melbourne restaurant voucher because it's Simply Sensational. Gareth Hall, Clint Hutchison, David Gately with you. Gavin Bedgegood is the Simply Sensational performance of the week. Knows his horses back to France. Back to front. Said behaviour will win in the last 50 metres pre-race. Training the house down. Knows horses back to front. Good to see small stable striking at that amazing strike rate. Hear, hear. He's just on fire at the moment. Morning, guys. I was at Sandown on Saturday and you could clearly see and hear that storm approaching before race nine, yet they let the riders out onto the track. I think something needs to change before we have a terrible incident that happens. That's from David. I wasn't there on Saturday.
Speaker 4It came in pretty quick, but could there be another method where they sort of alerted to that a bit sooner? Fair enough. I mean, I must admit when it came, it arrived, it looked very bleak and you weren't worried because there was a lightning strike in the air and the jockeys were out on the course. So that's something they may look at. I don't know.
Speaker 2Morning, Gareth and Hutchie. Great win by Mai Gladiola in the Moyer. She has been knocking on the door. Such a consistent, gutsy mare. Congrats to Johnny McArdle and team. Well-deserved. And also to Jamie Mott. What a great ride. That's from Denise. From Tamworth. Good on you, Denise. How did Craig Williams not get reprimanded for taking out three contenders at the gates in the Moyer? It was a little bit crash and bang there in the early part.
Speaker 4Yeah, they get a lot more leeway riders in general when they shift ground at the start because horses can jump in or out sometimes, but it's a good point.
Speaker 2Yeah. Morning, Gareth. Gareth, are there any GA tickets available for Everest Day? To see Kaying Rising and Autumn Glow on the same day is worth heading up for, I reckon. That's from Merv. I think it's all sold out. Everest Day. Yeah. You'll be going, though. I think Caulfield Cup. Do you know what? I'm going up to do the coverage there on the Friday night at Wentworth Park, however. The final ever greyhound meeting. You don't want to stay over? You don't want to sort of... Well, I'll just see what commitments I've got. Whatever Craig Hutchison tells me to do, really. That's disappointing for me. I think I might. I'll try and... I'm going to go to Guinea's Day and then Everest Day, but... You're better than that. It would have been great to see She's Alibi head back up to Sydney. It doesn't look like that's going to happen now for the King Charles. But Mood's telling Andrew Eddy on racing.com in an article that he just doesn't want to go up and down twice within two weeks. Some of the horses making their way back from the barriers to the mounting yard broke 33 seconds for the 600 trying to get out of that storm.
Speaker 4It was awful.
Speaker 2Who are you going to back in that race on Wednesday afternoon? Persian Spirit?
Speaker 4If there's a bit of cushion in the track, for sure. Yeah. We'll probably get even money rather than... Yeah. We won't be getting even money. We won't be getting even money. We won't be getting even money. We won't be getting even money. We won't be getting even money. We won't be getting even money. We won't be getting even money. We won't be getting even money. We won't be getting even money. We won't be getting even money. We won't be getting even money. We won't be getting even money. We won't be getting even money. We won't be getting even money. We won't be getting even money. We won't be getting even money. We won't be getting even money. We won't be getting even money. We won't be getting even money. We won't be getting even money. We won't be getting even money. We won't be getting even money. We won't be getting even money. We won't be getting even money. We won't be getting even money.
Speaker 2We won't be getting even money. There we go. So Gator doesn't have to do the form twice. Hi, boys. Just watching Cavalry Girl at the beach. How brave was she in the Moy? And watch out for A Live Another Day. He has thrived since his first up run. That's from the boy from the Bull. I think he goes to the Bobby Lewis on Saturday. A Live Another Day. Right. Okay. Ring-a-ding-ding. Outrageous car. The real special thing. Over the line Everest thing. A few things there. That's from Smithy.
Speaker 4He's a bit of a poet, Smithy. Yeah, I love it. I think I've heard from Smithy before.
Speaker 2Forget the match race, Gareth. It would be a procession. Spend the money on all the other issues in the industry you talk about. The owners don't need any more money. That's not enough. They'll probably put in their own money to have this invitational race. But anyway. Giggy Kick looked as big as a house in the yard. Looked like he'd need a run or two to get race fitness. Did you see him in the yard? Amy Yagi, that's her job, isn't it? That's not my guy. Good morning. Exciting times ahead. Tempted. Autumn glows. She's alibi. Carrying. Rising. Guest house. Well written. Who do we know? You know who will ride well written in Australia? That's from John. I don't think they've made up their mind yet. Did you watch well written, Hutchie? No, I didn't.
Speaker 4But I saw she won.
Speaker 2Gator, did you have a look at well written?
Speaker 3Yeah, she was excellent. You know, she, that last hundred, the replay you can find for free on the New Zealand website. But look at her strength, that last hundred. She's pretty good.
Speaker 2Yeah. She comes for an Epsom now and then to a Golden Eagle. Hi, Gareth. Carrying. Rising. First upper for four months. Carries 61. Jockeys does not use the whip. Wins by six lengths into a headwind and runs 1.6 for 1,200 metres. That is not possible. That's Seabiscuit Secretariat type of performance from Mark.
Speaker 4Yeah. Certainly very good.
Speaker 2Yeah. What else have we got? Why no Bangkok hottie for the Thousand Guineas G-man? Global goal and Queen's gamble will come to Melbourne for the Thousand Guineas. Also pretty baby. Definitely not a certainty. Well, I think their main aim is the flight stakes and then they'll make up their decision.
Speaker 4How are your plays going, by the way? You've had a lot of your, you had your show, didn't you, where you decided that who's going to go where and back what? How's it looking at this point?
Speaker 2Well, we don't know with the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups. I don't know if they're past the CT scans just yet. I think we played yellow jersey, so we're in a bit of trouble there.
Speaker 4Yeah, I thought it would run well. But it had an issue, didn't it? Pulled up a bit lame a day or two later. Correct, yeah. Is that right?
Speaker 2Even still, like, jury is out. Yeah.
Speaker 4Well, they pull up lame.
Speaker 2Well, I'll take it. If you gave me another opportunity to make a different decision, I would. You'd trade him in quick. Yeah, you have to these days. Wouldn't you trade him in?
Speaker 4I don't know. He's not being cosmic. I thought his form was good. He's running Queensland. If he's pulled up lame, you'd give him another chance.
Speaker 2But you don't want any setbacks in this beautiful game. No, that's true. Gator's shopping pretty well. He had this big multi. Cahing Rising to win the Everest. Autumn Glow to win the King Charles. And with no she's alibi, she'll start $1.10 as well. And then who was the other horse, Gator? Well-written, the Epson. So he's on top. He's on good terms.
Speaker 4He's good at these little multis, Gator. Yeah, he's a long-term place. That's good.
Speaker 2There's a few more. I've got Central Europe. He's my big one. He runs. That's not looking good. Well, I reckon he'll win. Okay. Yeah. Gavin Bedgegood is flying. I was just whiting you up, but you didn't bite, unfortunately. They'll come for me on the text line. Euro Cano doesn't seem to have helped one bit, the gelding operation. No. He's just not the same horse, is he? Unbelievable, isn't it? Yeah. My Rabira's moment of the weekend, I know I won't win because, it was the Cats belting the Blues and shutting up Paul Sebastiani. That's a bit harsh, Paul. You're definitely not going to win, Steve. Hey, Gene, lads. Can you ask the boys how they watch Victoria Race replays? Racing.com, I assume, but every single replay we have is to watch a 30-second ad. That's for race replays and trials. It takes you five minutes to watch three trial replays. Any advice? Well, you've just got to be patient, Murph.
Speaker 4There's a couple of apps you can get out there to help that out.
Speaker 2A few more questions coming through. Who would Hutchie's best horse that he's ever seen be?
Speaker 4Oh, I still, I mean, Winx is hard to beat. Carrying Rising, I've seen. So those are the two ones in recent memory.
Speaker 2Yeah. The next episode, what's happened to him? I think he's in trouble. He's going to trial, I think, in Victoria, but they're not happy with him at the moment. Breeding, Missy Moo, Dan McKay and Rising was a $500 purchase who had a last start in a two-mile Wellington car. He's by Sham Express. He's done an all right job, hasn't he? Sham Express. Yeah. But yeah, Carrying Rising is just one of those horses that is just a freak, basically.
Speaker 4Yeah. There's always one. It's an old saying in racing, isn't it? With whatever sign, they usually find one real good one and he's certainly that.
Speaker 2D-Lane. My simply sensational performance was D-Lane and winning on the daughter of Lise Crusoe in Japan on the weekend. I think he had a double. Yeah. Get her to the cockpit. Cox Plate. Well, I think Laney's joining us tomorrow. Right. So looking forward to that. A few other questions coming through. What did Hutchie make of the Bulldogs?
Speaker 4I thought they were very good. They were just inaccurate, weren't they? Yeah. You know, they had a good game, I thought. But just liked a bit of polish, like Bevo said, after the game.
Speaker 2This is a good text message. In fact, we've got to say goodbye. Thank you, Hutchie. Cheers, mate. Thank you, Gator.

Speaker 15Morning, Garth. Thank you, mate. Yeah, what a wonderful day and such a great win.
Speaker 2What were your emotions like as you woke up there on Saturday morning heading towards this Group 1?
Speaker 15I was a little bit concerned, actually, when I heard, I think John might have been on the morning show, one of them saying if it got too heavy, she might not run. So, yeah, I was really concerned that maybe she might come out. But I was always confident. Like, that was a perfect race for 1,000 metres first up. That's a sweet spot.
Speaker 2I guess you were watching the weather there early as the day unfolded.
Speaker 15I was actually out on the track before the first with Aidan Jolie and we were discussing our actual using. And mine kind of looked like the rain was going away and he was saying it was coming. So, I was glad I had the right app. And I'm sure he's going to ask me what that mine is and try and get onto that one.
Speaker 16What is your app?
Speaker 15I just go to Melbourne Rain Radar. I think it's a live through Google. But it was spot on anyway because the rain went away and obviously it didn't come until after our race.
Speaker 2So, as the meeting unfolded, Aidan, you probably realised that the rain might not come. Were you confident the track would be dry enough for her?
Speaker 15Yeah, definitely. To be honest, I'm not convinced she doesn't handle it. She's only had one go on a heavy eight, which she was not at her best. But it was after the Newmarket race. She had a horrible run in the Newmarket. You could probably nearly say she was flat after that. So, I'm not convinced she doesn't get through it. But obviously, while we were on a seven Saturday and she's run 32 and a half or something for a 600 and won a group one. So, I'd say she does get through it pretty well.
Speaker 2And she deserved that, didn't she?
Speaker 15Yeah, 100%. She's been very consistent. Very good filly and mare now her whole career. And she's raced in the best races. And she was unlucky to run into Tentiris, who put in just two unbelievable performances when we met him. And I think even her lightning run, her times were off the charts. And it just shows you how good a horse he was. He ran faster.
Speaker 2Yeah. And then I guess she goes to the Manicato now. Is that right?
Speaker 15Yeah, I'd say that's probably the natural progression for her. I think there's a race up the straight, but it might be like the Gil guy or something. So, I think she... She's definitely earned a shot at a Manicato and it's worth good money. And she's obviously started off this preparation as a four-year-old mare in the best possible fashion she could.
Speaker 2Yeah. And it was exciting listening to John McArdle on Correct Weight yesterday that they're planning a trip maybe to Royal Ascot next year. That would be something else there, Jamie.
Speaker 15It's going to be pretty special and exciting. And yeah, all going well. She's fit and happy and well. They're happy to take her over. So, that race kind of probably, you'd imagine, would really suit her well.
Speaker 2Yeah, especially when you see her form lines are like against the Tentaris like she showed earlier on in this year that, boy, she'll take some beating if she can turn up in that type of form.
Speaker 15Yeah, exactly. And look, I think she's still improving. She's still... Hopefully, she gets deeper into this preparation. She can learn to just relax that little bit more. And if she can, yeah, she's definitely... She's definitely up to winning some much better races for sure.
Speaker 2Talk us through what happened there on Saturday after you were heading out to the start for the Chautauqua Stakes.
Speaker 17My horse was scratched.
Speaker 2Oh, it was too, wasn't it?
Speaker 17Yeah. I was in the owner's bar.
Speaker 2So, you get to have another crack, I guess, on Saturday. I guess that horses that were scratched there on Saturday can race on Saturday. So, I think you're on recon, aren't you?
Speaker 15Yeah, so that race has been put on Wednesday.
Speaker 2Yeah, Wednesday, yeah.
Speaker 15Yeah, so I think... I'm hoping Pat runs him because I really think he can win. I think it's the right race for him. Perfect track. Just hopefully the track dries out a little bit, which I'm sure it will.
Speaker 16Yeah, what surface does he need then?
Speaker 15Well, looking at his form, he doesn't handle wet ground, but I think he probably nearly should have won first up and that was a soft six. So, I don't think it's a proper true god on his wet form. I'd be happy enough if it was a six that he could win.
Speaker 2All right, beautiful. So, yeah, so the Chautauqua Stakes, those horses that were scratched there on Saturday, they're being reinstated for that race on Wednesday afternoon. Good luck, mate, with recon, that Chautauqua Stakes. And then, of course, well done there on the weekend too with my Gladiola, as you point out. She thoroughly deserved a victory like that and hopefully now she can go on with this preparation and maybe win another one like that. That Matacardo now, is definitely a winnable race for her.
Speaker 15Definitely, yeah, she's right in it and I suppose once we get to 1,200, the most important thing with her is if there's good speed in it, it's much easier for me to keep her into a relaxed rhythm and look, she's in the past 1,200 metre runs, they've kind of stacked up midway and she's got keen, but she still does finish off. So, if we can get a Matacardo that's run at a good tempo and I can get her to relax, there's no reason why she can't win.
Speaker 2Have you got much to look forward to this Saturday at Flemington?
Speaker 15I've got, I think I've got four or five rides. I've got one second there, Garrett.
Speaker 16That's all right.
Speaker 15I've got Scintillation in a Group 3 for John O'Shea.
Speaker 18Yep.
Speaker 15Depending on whether Recon runs Wednesday, he might go to the Bobby Lewis.
Speaker 18Okay.
Speaker 15And I'm waiting to hear if I am riding Lara Ernst, a pover. Okay.
Speaker 2Yeah. There you go. Some nice rides there on Saturday at Flemington. And then you've got a rare day off today. Not going to Tatura.
Speaker 19No, day off. I had trials, actually, and they got pulled off. That's too wet at Cranbourne, so they got cancelled. Off to Mowi tomorrow.
Speaker 2Yeah. All right then, mate. Well, we'll let you go. We appreciate your time as always, Jamie, but congratulations. Great ride and well done to yourself and Johnny McCarter because it is a great... It's been a great day. It's been a great day. It's been a great association for so many years, like the trainer-jockey combination of McCarter and yourself, mate. So it's been terrific, and it's great to see you two have success once again at the highest level.
Speaker 15Yeah. It's my best day on the course, having such a good relationship with John. It's a game where loyalty is very few and far between, and we've been great loyal to each other for a long time. And one thing, one thing I wanted to do was team up with him and win a Group 1, and he hasn't had one for quite a while, and I was lucky enough over the last few years to get four, and to team up with him for a Group 1, just, yeah, icing on the cake. And it's one thing I really wanted to achieve in my career, and I'm so thankful to be able to do it. And hopefully this beautiful mare we've got, my buddy Ola, can provide us with a few more.
Speaker 2What makes your relationship with him so special?
Speaker 15Well, he's a fantastic person, which I love and get along great with him. And riding for him over the years, he's been very good. Like, obviously, I'm not going to ride them all perfect. And one thing he does do is he sort of cracks the shits when I ride one bad, but it's only for five minutes, and then we're back sweet as after that. And obviously, not every trainer and connections are like that. So, we've been great together. And to cap it off on Saturday with a Group 1, with a mare we've been trying the last couple of seasons to get, just so special. And, yeah, I'm sure he's as proud as I am.
Speaker 2I guess it's extra satisfying in a way as well that you get to, obviously, you would have a lot to do with this girl behind the scenes, I would imagine.
Speaker 15Yeah, definitely do most of her gallops. And I've got to thank Brian Hill, Hinton as well who rides her track work and he does fantastic job with her um but yeah i do most of her main gallops and all her trials and that's kind of been from from since she was a i suppose almost a yearling turning two so um yeah i've known her i've known her the whole time and uh she's been a very special mare and not not all horses get to win a group one so to be there from basically day one and to see her mature and and the blossom and she's a big strong girl now and she's got a massive hindquarters on her and there's plenty of power there so hopefully uh she's ready to really hit
Speaker 2hit top here and show us what she's made of well we appreciate your time jamie well done mate congratulations anytime gareth thanks mate there's jamie mott there it's 10 minutes past nine we'll take a break um mickey ganon will join us next to break down that meeting at ranway
Speaker 1um join the conversation text us on oh four double nine seven three six seven three six live across australia this is giddyup with gareth hall it's now time for the monday breakdown with
Speaker 2mick gannon mickey gannon joins us here on giddyup hello to you mick morning to you gareth hey well done with the weekend preview top four multi never in doubt nice to get up to a good start wasn't it
Speaker 20and um yeah it was it was a really good effort so uh i'm lucky that a few of them didn't get the job done and we in the races but that's okay we did the job for the listeners g a couple of our
Speaker 2listeners said that they cashed out heading into the last league now it was a dollar a four wasn't it johnny that's probably why that's probably why they cashed out probably smart at the end of the day yeah yeah i've heard of worse decisions yeah stars in their eyes was the horse that were with that was dean watling's best bet just went down to the mona lisa pinhole was back in third but no it was a good day at the office and i don't know what price was around nine dollars i think which was a ridiculous price they are generous to us the bet 365 traders but i missed three from four now no shut up a few of the knockers as well on the um gareth's horse and hound text line gee they came for you didn't they
Speaker 20on friday um and i feel like maybe they're coming for you at the same time though sort of backhanded
Speaker 2uh you show them jack well done um where do we start we might kick it off with tempted winning the concours we'll replay that race this is darren flindell from sky racing calling the action steady
Speaker 21ready being tested now by rosalind starr rosalind starr racer to the lee but here she comes tempted headwall's bursting through the middle got buffeted out tempted gets a length and a half clear headwall tries to recover tempted in front from headwall tempted she loves randwick great
Speaker 2when they're in the concourse that was impressive like it was a great ride by chad schofield he could see sac lloyd ride for a little bit of luck and then he just put the foot down with tempted and said come on girl and away she went and then headwall was a little unlucky but um the race
Speaker 20was over basically with a hundred to go yeah we spoke about it during the week didn't we that you know they would have needed speed on which they got speed on and then the best ride and the horse with the most luck between those two is probably going to be the winner um if either of them encountered a bit of bad luck they probably wouldn't win so full credit to chad's go field got to the clean air and away uh he went on tempted she was excellent gareth really really good oh you know idle down late i think he had enough time to give her a give her a kiss and and a pat now chad so look i think a lot can be made about the margin should have been closer and sure if headwell did have a bit of um a bit more clean air it could have finished closer however if chad rode tempted out i would suggest the margin would have been greater as well so uh you do you when you're looking at that but um they'll meet next time you'd imagine um i'd say probably under wait for age conditions gareth and um you'd have to be taking tempted off that start we'll ask we'll have to ask henry field but i
Speaker 2wonder if beeman's done enough to get a spot in the everest to represent newgate yeah it's pretty
Speaker 20good pretty good the closing section was suggested it was a good performance so i would i don't know who else they have gareth lined up unless they're going to look elsewhere so it wouldn't shock
Speaker 2well this is the point we're making earlier on is that if you've got a slot um you nearly just go your own horse even if you know that you think that he can't win or she can't win because you're going to get your money back anyway if you try and do a deal with the um other owners then it's going to make it difficult with carrying rising in the race otherwise you try and sell your slot if you know what i mean so um they might just say well beeman's going well enough we'll have a crack and we'll see if you can finish in the money and earn some prize money back so
Speaker 20i reckon well what other races would there be for beaver now gareth you know being a four-year-old it's probably just worth rolling grass you know if he goes to a new level he can um you could potentially play so who knows well there's a manukata if they want to come to melbourne
Speaker 2or they try and try and get into a sydney or try and win a sydney stakes with him well you'd be
Speaker 20better off if you own the slot you're probably better off just going around the everest right
Speaker 2but manukato for sure is an option headwall's staying in melbourne trent mason held a reporting there on his social media platforms with racing.com that he won't come towards he won't come to melbourne from manukato so yeah it will stays in sydney yeah he stays in sydney but tempted we'll have one more run and then head into the everest so um i think from an everest perspective um perspective that we need attempted to do what she did there on saturday well we certainly did and it was sort
Speaker 20of like you know first serve advantage to attempted but uh kind of rising strikes back we definitely needed to see that um she's improved gareth i think she's come back a bit she's a better galloper than what she was so that's fantastic but um so is he so yeah that's that's a that's a
Speaker 2challenge that tempted and kiramana has yeah she's just unlucky that she might have run into one of the greatest if not the greatest of all time unfortunately for tempted um the challenge for stakes over the mile lindeman did what he usually does second up and deliver a performance like this
Speaker 21to go back to back in this race come up the rise and lindeman's gone three lengths clear the alfredis this dower stairs batting on one pace a gap to fangirl green spaces jay was too far back linderman's going great guns inside the 150 it's linderman four links clear fangirl chair were very late on the scene but linderman well rated in the lead and that was pinching money linderman
Speaker 2won the so linderman defeats char wool fangirls uh most likely run her last race back in third but linderman um we got four dollars he was our even our mega boost horse is starting to win these
Speaker 20days mickey gannon astonishing stuff it's a real turn of events gee yeah it's all happening good time to be involved in that and giddy up with gareth hall and so see your face everywhere as well on that bet 365 app so it's it's all happening but um look really pretty much went to script in there we spoke about it all week you know it's going to be a slightly run race linderman will improve there's no doubt about it second up yada yada as well or not you could trust the fact that how disappointing he was at a fast tempo in the wing stakes and could he bounce back and it was a completely different setup and so we've got a few right on the weekend we've got a few wrong but this was probably the easiest one of there to get right char wolf was enormous very very keen look i'm still in the camp i want to back him forth up and beyond so he still won't get me third up um but that's okay he could still win but it just wouldn't be i'm just not going to be on um so that's just the way you play there fangirl what a career she's had you know she had every possible uh there of course but um lineman nashville gets the job done you can a lot can be made of it people blow up so it's a walk i think we spoke about it gareth uh we were referencing that even on saturday morning that you know expected mr brightside i forgot the race maccabi dave or whatever it was sort of tempo here there's no reason why any of these horses will go mad up in front and it is what you know we've got what we expected so charlotte i wonder what
Speaker 2they'll do with him now do they go to a king charles and take on autumn guy and probably not beat her or would you go to a hill stakes with him and step up to the 1800 meters yeah i'd go wherever pride of jenny is so that's the fan i told joe about that the other day i don't think he knew that was happening really so he might go to the fame with with him on the sunday after the afl grand final um so yeah we'll we'll find out from joe what he's planning to do with char wolf and congratulations to fangirl what a career she's had what 42 starts 12 victories 14 minor placings just over 11 million dollars in prize money yeah she's so good awesome
Speaker 20and uh looks a shame that she didn't come out and go out a winner i guess gareth but um you know you can only try it our race horses but super career um the flop of the day or the please explain was
Speaker 2pembrey in the group two furious stakes maybe it was the win conditions it was difficult to lead there but bangkok hottie um it was a a a ride full of intent by kara mcavoy wide gate he put her outside of the leader um and she was too strong chilly girl had her opportunity in striking alibi that was the eye catcher there flashing home for third yeah we spoke about you know we touched on
Speaker 20win conditions on saturday and we knew there was a win coming speaking to a few people on track this the suggestion was probably that it didn't play as big a part as we thought it would because obviously they had that that break gareth you know and they thought oh okay well you know that so that was when the big wins were hitting and then there was some sort of suspicion that back towards the inside wouldn't be okay but erno came out and won i think it was in race three you know at a really good clip and and was was you know it was strong late so overall the track played really really fair really really even on a day where you thought that we would play a significant role it was very windy but it didn't necessarily play a role in um you know position and run necessarily so A little bit to sort of, still a bit of work to do on that, but overall, that's what I'm thinking. But the performance of Bangkok Hottie, yeah, just full credit to Kieran McEvoy to land in that position. They went slow, Gareth. So every possible, but I got that completely wrong. I thought Bangkok Hottie would be at the back, running home well, looking for 400 metres, but they're slow on speed and was too good. I thought Chilli Girl probably could have got a bit closer. But, you know, if you put Chilli Girl in Bangkok Hottie's position, I think you swap the results. Striking alibi, excellent. Cherry bombshell, excellent. Cheyenne excuses Gareth, but, you know, slow tempo, three wide, a lot different to fast tempo, three wide. So I would have liked her to probably finish a little closer. And Cheyenne, very disappointing. Not Cheyenne, I should say Pembrey, very disappointing.
Speaker 2Yeah. Fence was off at Randwick, over-watering again. Chilli Girl were huge under the circumstances. Your thoughts on that there?
Speaker 20Fence was off. I think it was three winners came from the fence, Gareth. So I think if you wanted to, reference like a fencing off sort of meeting, you're talking more rail true position at Royal Randwick. But just before we go there, because it's important that we get this stuff right when people ask the questions. So you are, led fence, Lindemann led fence, and Mona Lisa in the last was, I think, the 600 metres fence. Yeah. So, you know, not terrible. Erno, did I mention Erno, reference Erno? Yeah, so Erno was there as well. So what are we talking? Four out of the 10 runners at the 600 metres fencing run? Yeah. I'm not sure you could suggest that.
Speaker 2Charles Wolfe pulled up super. He'll head to the seven stakes now. And then I think Joe will make up his mind whether he goes towards a hill stakes or a King Charles with him. So he'll stay.
Speaker 20Who goes around in a seven stakes from a speed, Gareth?
Speaker 2I'm not quite sure. I wouldn't have that in front of me. But Autumn Glow, she can make her own luck on speed. She'll be there.
Speaker 20Yeah, that's not fast enough. Yeah, it doesn't really matter.
Speaker 2Yeah. It's a fast or slow tempo when she's in that race against him. Surely he's there.
Speaker 20She'll beat him. Yeah.
Speaker 2So.
Speaker 20Well, maybe you can just put the call out to Joe in one more time and just remind him. Pride of Jenny.
Speaker 2The fee and stakes. Yeah. I don't know if that fits into his schedule, trying to get to a King Charles. I don't know. But yeah, so he'll head towards the seven stakes and then they'll make their decision, as I said, to a King Charles or a hill stakes, with Charles Wolfe. Speaking of Joe Pride, Hedley Grange got there over Soothsayer. He's been a horse, hasn't he, over the last six months? Attica was third. And the disappointment was out of flyer.
Speaker 20Yeah. And I thought, you know, we probably thought the way she gets beat is a really slow tempo and they went even. So she, you know, she probably, well, she would have liked them to go a little bit quicker and private I'd land on the speed. We're probably expecting an even tempo anyway. So she was disappointing, to be frank. Hedley Grange, super. He's come back better. We spoke about him being probably one of the better, you know, most improved horses in the country last preparation and he's franked that and he's improved again. Soothsayer, good. Right place, right time. Attica, good. We can definitely follow Attica out of that race for sure, Gareth. Can Attica win an Epson? I'd probably lean to no still, but he'll be competitive.
Speaker 2Yeah. All right then. Horses that we need to be following from this meeting?
Speaker 20Decorum is exceptional. Wherever Decorum goes, we want to be having a bet as long as the target's not way too high. Hedley Grange, fantastic. So You Are was really good. Gone to a completely new level there. Full credit to Bjorn. Only had the runner, I think, for two or three runs. Cherry Bombshell, great. Charwolf, great. Barron Gary in the midway.
Speaker 18Yeah.
Speaker 20Some win that. So not sure where Joe Ible takes Barron Gary, but the horse is fine.
Speaker 2What about the Budgie Smuggler? I forgot to ask about him.
Speaker 20I don't know what you do with a Budgie Smuggler off that. Yeah. Certainly wouldn't be buttering up at $2.40. Yeah.
Speaker 2So You Are.
Speaker 20And there has to be some sort of excuses there. So we'll just go. I think we'll just sort of wait and see what sort of unfolds there. I didn't see anything in the stewards report, but it's a big turnaround. Like you would have thought the other would have said You Are only doing this time. So there must be something in play.
Speaker 2It's a big day for us, Mickey Gannon, with our futures play. Well, for me anyway, in the Maccabi Diva stakes, does Chris Waller nominate Autumn Glow or not? If he nominates, we get our money back. If he doesn't nominate, we get our money back. If he nominates and he's no chance, of going, it sounds like, because they're going to go to the seven stakes and then we do our cash. Surely he wouldn't do that to us, would he, Chris? Surely. Surely he wouldn't nominate if he's got it. But you've got to keep your options open. That would be the excuse. And then we're thinking about going. But yeah.
Speaker 20Maybe Brayden is still feeling generous. You know, he might just look after the punters, you know?
Speaker 2Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. But he might change his mind. So we're. We've decided to go to the Maccabi Diva and that's why we nominate him. Surely not. Yeah. Then she got a virus and then we're not going anymore. Anyway, we'll cross our fingers and toes that he does not nominate Chris Waller. Fingers crossed, Dave. Yeah. All right, mate. Thanks for that. We appreciate you as always. Thank you. There's Mickey Gatton. The Monday Means Test. They're nearly ready to go. They'll be fired up today. Johnny O'Neill and Wayne Hawks. They will join us straight after this.
Speaker 1Join the conversation. Text us on 0499 736 736. Live across Australia. This is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall. The Monday Means Test with Wayne Hawks and John O'Neill.
Speaker 2It's time for the Monday Means Test. You can join our conversation anytime you want on the Gareth's Horse and Hound text line 0499 736 736. Let's welcome in John O'Neill. Welcome to the team, Wayne Hawks. Hello to you. Morning, Gareth. How are you? I'm very well. And Johnny O'Neill. Hello to you. Good morning, my friend. How are you? Good, thank you. It's going to be a lot of fun on the means test as it always is. But Zach Purton, live from some golf course in Hong Kong, will be joining us in 30 minutes time.
Speaker 22Is he at the golf course? Yeah, at 10 o'clock. 7 o'clock in the morning in Hong Kong. Yeah. He's at golf. It'll be 9 o'clock.
Speaker 2It'll be 8 o'clock. 8 o'clock.
Speaker 22Is it two hours? Yeah, two hours. Non-daylight saving time is two hours. Yeah. I'd be down in stall 57, Hazy's joint, making sure the bugger was right.
Speaker 23Tell you what, he's got a new outfit on today, too.
Speaker 22Who, Wayne?
Speaker 23Yes. Yes. He got dropped off by a private car and then was walking. The rain was just coming down. His hair was getting a bit wet. That was Jane. It was Jane. Wow. I've got to tell you. There you go.
Speaker 2Did you have a good morning this morning, Wayne?
Speaker 22How was track work at Flemington? I actually waved myself. After Johnny keeps going on, I actually waved myself. Johnny, shut up. I'll put on two kilos. Oh, no.
Speaker 23No, you don't look like you've put... Hey, the great Kieran Martin. No, he's ringing me. Hang on one second. Kieran, what are you doing? I'm on the radio.
Speaker 2Make sure you're warning me on the radio, because last time this happened... He rang up. Oh, did he really? Well, no, that was probably me.
Speaker 22Oh, hang on, hang on, hang on. Donald Trump's ringing me.
Speaker 2Oh. All right, then we'll get stuck... Next. We're going to get stuck into the King's Gambit. We're going to talk about Carling Rising when Zach comes on, but you have to open up the show with him. This is what he did. In his first up run, this campaign... On the opening night... On the opening day of the new Hong Kong season.
Speaker 5...Purton's making a true statement here. 400 to go. Carling Rising's five in front. The rest must look up and think, oh, no, not this again, because the champ is now six clear of co-partner Prance, and then came Magic Control. Lucky with you. 21-15, he's second split. Look out, Sydney. He's coming back, and he's coming back looking just like that. Carling Rising beat home co-partner Prance...
Speaker 6Oh, listen, he's got improvement. Yeah. There's no doubt about that. That's why I gave him a bit of a push, give him that blow. You know, we were to try and bring him on for the Everest, but he handled himself really well, and he changed his leg. That's what I liked.
Speaker 2So that was Zach Purton saying there's improvement in him after he's gone 106-11. Now, once Mark McNamara, the caller, read out that time, you had to, like, you thought, he's making that up. Like, no horse can run that quick, but he's done it, and he's done it pretty easily with improvement to come as he heads to Sydney. He's just doing what no other horse has been able to do, Wayne. It's unbelievable.
Speaker 22It's freaky.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 22Freaky's the word. Yeah. If he's doing that, look, Zach can say he's going to improve. He can't run any quicker. Well, he might be able to. Well, you say that, but I mean, you know, you just watch the replay and you just go, that's ridiculous. So the second horse... Got beat seven and three quarter. Was that right? So it's broken the track record as well. Not quite.
Speaker 23Well... I think it was the second quick horse. Second quick horse. It's about five lengths. Six lengths.
Speaker 22But you get my point. Yeah. Like, the second horse has nearly... Excuse me. The second horse has nearly broke the track record as well. So I don't know. I mean, I would assume there'd be all the form gurus around the world getting the stopwatch out and clocking it off of the TV to see whether it was actually correct, because everyone just went, what the...
Speaker 2He's got...
Speaker 23It was a fast track, but he's just gone unbelievably well again. I think up to 1,400, he's the best I've ever seen.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 23There you go. I think he is... What he manages to do, and even the last sort of 40 or 50 yards for those people that watched it, I know that Zach sort of gave him a little bit of a click up to sort of lengthen, but he still set up the last 40 or 50 yards and give him a little pat. So you wouldn't know how quick he can go. And I mean... And the point... point that Wayne continues to make. we had a chat about it off air, was he's still got to get here. He's still got to travel. And then we're now saying to Wayne, he does. But when he gets here, and no matter how he travels.
Speaker 22I'm not a spew, I'm not a spew. All I'm saying is, he has to actually get here. I mean, there's plenty of horses every year. The next year, they're favouring for the race. I mean, you can't back him at the odds anyway. But wait until he gets here.
Speaker 2Well, $1.40 is value if he gets here safe and sound. Probably. He'll start at $1.01. They won't bet $1.40.
Speaker 23Probably. They might be doing it now. Well, you can get $1.40 now. Yeah, they won't be betting.
Speaker 22I don't think Ben Hazel will mind me saying this, but Ben told me on Friday, he said, with a cheeky fat smile, he said, I don't know, because I said, was he okay? He said, yeah, yeah, yeah. He said, everyone was ringing me, so I rang my dad. He said, yep, he's had a bit of foot bruising, and they just scanned him from ears to his arse, literally. They had him in there for a fair while just scanning the hell out of him. And he came up crystal clear, and Ben looked at me cheekily and said, he said, my dad reckons he's improved. So, you know what? You know what? Ben's dad was right. He has improved. So, it's a bit, it is freaky. I reckon freaky's the right word. There's a million adjectives, but I reckon freaky's as good as any, because you don't, you know they're beating nothing. What's the second or third horses? What are they? You know what I mean? But it's just the way they are.
Speaker 23Well, the time they just ran, if they come out here, they'd be competitive. It's the way they are.
Speaker 22Yeah, but so would Jimmy Starr be. I mean, if he wasn't there, Jimmy Starr would be running and winning that race. I reckon. If he was there. If he was there. Yeah, probably.
Speaker 2If he was there.
Speaker 22Yeah.
Speaker 2So, you have a look at the Everest slot holders now. So, Ninja's got a slot. Cain Rising's got a slot. And Tempted will get the Cadolphin slot. Sure. So, from Jimmy Starr's perspective now, does that change your plans? Because when you're dealing with a few of these slot holders, unless you're talking to the tab, like how do you work out a deal now that satisfies them and then satisfies, you guys, when you're taking a horse like Cain Rising?
Speaker 23I think the great thing about that Sydney Carnival and that race is that there's a, there's a sprinting series on as well, right? So, you're not going to beat the good horse. And to be honest, I don't think anybody can beat Tempted for a running second either. Like the way it exploded on the weekend. So, the horses that are the Briasses and the Jimmy Starrs and the Michael Friedman's horse. Ninja. Ninja. Those type of horses. Those type of horses. I'll tell you the other horse that ran really well in Tempted's race was Headwall. Yeah. So, those type of horses are the horses that are running for third. But there's other, there's other races leading into that. I understand. And then the race afterwards. So, the bonus is a million and a half dollars, I think. How do you satisfy the slot holders?
Speaker 22Well, yeah, but those guys. Is it up to you to satisfy the slot holders? Those guys are going to want to cover their money. No, no, no. In all fairness, Johnny couldn't give a stuff about the slot holders as satisfying them. Johnny and his connections are looking after them themselves for, to be satisfied themselves.
Speaker 2I understand that, Wayne. But if you, if you're Max Whitby, Cole Madden, Steve McCann and Neil Ware, if you're them, all right, and you're trying to do a deal with Jimmy Starr, and you're thinking, well, you can't win, Johnny. So, what kind of deal do you want to do? 50-50? Why am I going to do 50-50 when I know you can't win? How am I going to make money out of it? But isn't that the whole fun of the Everest and part of the excitement of it?
Speaker 23Yeah, if they don't do something, who are they going to do it with?
Speaker 2Well, just, would you buy the slot off him? No. You're going to get $700 to run last. You're going to get $700 to run last anyway. So, why wouldn't you just buy the slot? The group of owners of Jimmy Starr, that's what will have to happen with a few of them. How much are the slots? $700,000. Okay. Around that. So, that's what you'd have to do because if you, unless you just race your own horse, because you're not going to make any money of it if you go with Jimmy Starr.
Speaker 22But you're trying to get something back. And I mean.
Speaker 2Yeah, run your own horse then.
Speaker 22He's got no chance, but you get your money back. Yeah. But the end result, I mean, from our point of view, if we don't run the Everest so be it. Go the Sydney Stakes. I mean, at the end of the day, it is what it is. It's a bit like, you know what, we haven't had this for a few years, but it must be due. Oh, I'm not going to get to run the Caulfield Cup this year because I didn't qualify properly. It is what it is. I mean, if you make the field, you make the field. And if you're not good enough, and someone doesn't want to take you on, well, it is what it is. But you've still got nine other lots of connections that are trying to get set somewhere. So, they're the ones that are in more, I mean, if strife's the word, you know what I'm trying to say? If anyone's in strife, it's the slot holders, not the people with the horses.
Speaker 23But even the people with the horses, like I can tell you, we had a good, great deal with the tab last year. Yeah. But post fourth or fifth, you get nothing. I don't think you get anything. So, you don't, if you run last, you get half of that. No, I don't think we get, no, I don't think we get anything. Well, it depends what your deal is. Yeah, it depends what deal it is. So, what I would say is they'll give higher premiums for second, third, and fourth. Yes, yeah. And you'll get nothing if you run fifth and beyond because that's what the slot will be, I would have thought. So, people. People are really racing. In my opinion, they're racing for third, fourth, and fifth. I don't know what the prize money is down to fifth.
Speaker 2Is it more than 700 for fifth? It's 2.9 for second, 2 million for third.
Speaker 23Yeah. Okay. And then there'll be something decent for fourth, I would imagine, is there? It'll be more than the 700 to get your money. It's still a good prize money, yeah. I'm not sure. It's huge prize money. So, I think that's what will happen. You know, there'll be an incentive for second, third, and fourth, and maybe fifth. I don't know.
Speaker 22Well, that's why the Golden Eagles, such a big race to try and win because it's 10 million bucks. You don't have to worry about slot holders. Fourth place is 1.5.
Speaker 2Fifth place, 1.2. Sixth, 950,000. And then seventh to 12th, you get $700,000. Okay.
Speaker 23So, what I would say is in any deal, there'd be a reasonable incentive to make sure that you're a third, fourth, fifth. And then at sixth, you probably get 200,000. If you run sixth, then they cover their 700 slot. When do you have to make your mind up whether you get a slot or not? Whenever. Well, I think it depends how the horses are going. Because you go to the city. Look, I mean, Jimmy. Jimmy's going to the Manicato. He's going to want to win or run really well for us to go to the Everest. I'm not saying you won't, but he's going to have to do that. Brass is going to open up probably next week or the week after. And Brass is going to have to run really well to want to go there. You're not going to go there and run seventh first up and think, well, I'm going to go to the Everest. Correct.
Speaker 22It's a waste of time running unless you're going in 100% and thinking that you've got a big chance of winning. I mean, it's, you know. So, head wall, yes. Yes.
Speaker 23Head wall, definitely. After that. Tempted, definitely. You've already said Ninja, definitely. Yeah.
Speaker 16That's four.
Speaker 23Okay. So, that's Fusca and Rising. Fusca and Rising.
Speaker 2Where's Wallace, man? Jolly Star, she's probably, yeah. If she impresses Chris Waller, I think she trials Tuesday. She'll definitely go around, I would imagine, for Chris Waller. So, that's five. So, there's five. How many have we got? Ten. Baywack, they want a slot with him. He has to go around in the Manicato. Well, that's six. Yeah. I reckon. I reckon. Jonathan Munns will look how geeky he goes in the Manicato. He couldn't win. Yeah. He won't be going there. He'll buy a slot if he wants one. He ran okay, though, on Saturday.
Speaker 23Look, he did run okay. They ran really good time, and he couldn't make ground for where he was. I think they ran home in, what, 21 to tick or something. He was eight or ten lengths from them.
Speaker 22And to be fair, he was half at horses in front of him. He was getting half held up. Yeah, true, true, true. I do like that back-end vision when you're behind the horses looking forward. Yeah, yeah. Following them home, I know they did the trots and into the minion early this year, and it's fantastic vision because you're sort of sitting behind and up high and just watching them, sort of like being the forward pocket, the MCG, seriously, and you watch them go up and down. It's actually great, great vision. He actually ran fine because it wasn't his race, and he had to get going somewhere else.
Speaker 23I reckon the CFL was his race. Seven furlongs down. He was a bit older.
Speaker 22End of the carnival. A kicky kick, yeah.
Speaker 23Yeah, yeah. Just be kind to him over the carnival. Place him in a couple of runs and then set him up for that, and he'll probably win it.
Speaker 22You run in that, then he runs up the straight in the 1,200 because it's a 1,300-meter race, hypothetically. You could do worse things. I mean, they're worth millions and millions of these races.
Speaker 2I think the Rupert Clark's after that race at Flemington, but yeah, there's plenty of
Speaker 23But even you go to the Rupert Clark, and then you could go to the, what's the group one in Perth? The Winterbottom. We could go there. But it is a couple of nice group ones at the end of his career. I mean, how old is he? Seven, rising eight or something? Eight, yeah.
Speaker 22But do we all hypothetically start looking and going, stuff the Everest? Do we actually go the other way and go, mate, you can have it. You can have it. It's yours. I'm not running. I'm not running the Everest. I'm going here. I'm going there. I mean, people have to start thinking that as well. And you know what? It might be tempted. I'm just making stuff up. It doesn't have to be a horse way down the numbers. It could be the second favorite going, well, we ain't going to win. And you know what? We want to win when we run tempted. So you know what? Let's not run there. Let's change tact and change path. I'm just saying hypothetically, with this horse in the race, I mean, the horse in the race is great from a fan spectacle, but from a participation point of view, all of a sudden, you should never, ever shy away from one horse. You shouldn't, because as I say, you got to get there and da-da-da-da-da-da-da.
Speaker 2Champions hurt, like dead set champions hurt slot races because it's like-
Speaker 22That's what I'm saying. That's my point I'm trying to get at. That's right. It's going to change the whole thing. And then you look how he ran on the weekend. I mean, he can beat Chautauqua and walk out the gates and he'd probably still lap him and win. And you know, look, he didn't run time in the Everest when he won last year and everything like that, but he didn't have to. You only had to win by a length of an arm and that's what he did.
Speaker 2We're going to take a break. We'll have a look at the Moyer Stakes next. And don't forget, Zach Pertin, speaking of Carrying Rising, will join us on the golf course live from Hong Kong at 10 o'clock.
Speaker 1Join the conversation. Text us on 0499 736 736. Live across Australia. This is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 7He's trying to cut the corner. Further back generosity and then buzzer ball. Giga kick with three behind it. Here comes the start. One of those, Cavalry Girl, 300 metres to go. Natural fling on the outside, shown her head. Mike Gladiola's coming into it too, and they were followed by Extra Galactic, GG's Miss Truth, Cavalry Girl at the 150. Mike Gladiola's peppering away their natural fling. Cavalry Girl, Mike Gladiola. Mike Gladiola lifts it, Mike Gladiola.
Speaker 2I love this result there on Saturday with Mike Gladiola winning. Like, she paid massive, really, $10. I know there was concerns over the track conditions, and Johnny McArdle said on Giddy Up and then on the first word on Saturday, he said on Giddy Up on Thursday he needs to start regardless of the conditions, and then he was listening to Aidan Jolly, I reckon, Saturday morning before he came on the first word and said, well, we'll scratch if it's a heavy nine, if it's bottomless, because they had that much rain overnight, and there was rain predicted earlier on in the day on that Saturday, but the rain didn't come. And then 10 minutes after the rain or the storm hit, so he was... He was able to get the conditions to be on his side in a way, Mike Gladiola, and then Jamie Mott and Johnny McArdle, who have been a wonderful combination for so many years, but Johnny's been loyal to Jamie, and Jamie's been loyal to Johnny, and they combined for their first group one together, and it's a beautiful story, I reckon, for Racing Wayne, and she got there over Cavalry Girl, and if you told me at the start of her preparation that she'd be beaten by a photo finish in a group one, I thought you'd be crazy, but that was a great performance as well by Tommy Dabinick to get her to do what she did there on Saturday.
Speaker 22Well, Cavalry Girl kicked too. Yeah. Like, it actually kicked. You thought, oh, it's home, and Gladiola, that reminded me of Piero, the 1500, the George Ryder, when Nash swapped the stick over on Piero and went whop, and he just put his ears back and his mouth open and just grinded to the line, and for those that... weren't watching Racing.com, excuse me, the post-interview with Jamie Mott I thought was fantastic. He was full of emotion, and I'm thinking, gee, normally he's winning a midweek at Sandown, you know, just rolling back to the Mountie enclosure, and he had a head full of tears and was just about to let rip, so I thought that was great, obviously because of the work that he obviously put in with his horse and the association that him and John McCartney, Cardle have had together, that I thought that was pretty cool, because I'm not here to bag jockeys, but I mean, you know, I had a jockey in the last two weeks that rode a horse, slaughtered it, absolutely slaughtered it. My brother went off his scone and said to the jockey, did you watch the replay? And the jockey said, no, I didn't watch the replay. He said, well, go back and watch the replay, and you... This was on the way home, and he said, you ring me back and tell me if I'm wrong. Rang back and went, yeah, yeah, you're right. Should have won, sorry. So, you know. When you're putting in so much work, it obviously means a hell of a lot more, and obviously the relationship that those two guys have got has been big, and Johnny McCartell said it on Racing.com that, you know, when I didn't have much and he wasn't much, and I was giving him a go in the bush on Saturdays and stuff like that, so there's no one of those high-weight jockeys, and everyone talks about the weights going up all the time and everything like that. I said it earlier this year, I don't reckon I've seen Jamie Mott look so good for so long. I saw him one day at Bendigo a few months ago, and I thought, because he always looks tired and stuffed and, you know, he busts his gut. I mean, you know, you go into the races with the heaters on in your car and the plastic bags. He's a bit like Stephen Arnold, isn't he? Tall and, yeah, tall.
Speaker 23It's probably a normal way to be sort of high 60s.
Speaker 22A hundred percent it would be. And he's riding 56 and a half on the weekend. It's incredible. So it was a, you know, it was an all-around great, great story.
Speaker 2And as you point out with that, with Jamie Mott, he has, like, education's been massive in the way that these jockeys can gather information from experts now and they're, they've chosen Phil when it comes to diets and that. He's been able to work out a diet. He goes to the gym every day and he's just smarter with the way that he looks after his body. You know what else he is? Yep.
Speaker 22He's a worker.
Speaker 2He's a worker. And you can, and you can see the results that have come his way since he's been able to change that up a little bit.
Speaker 23Yeah, I agree. And look, I wanted to give Johnny McArdle a rap too. I saw a couple of interviews, not only after the race, but I heard him yesterday and he was off playing golf in the morning with these young fellows. And, you know, like what a great trainer and to think, that that's the only group one he's tried, or 21 years or something between group ones. Hollow Bull was the last one. D-Taggett. The great Nick Theodosie had a little share in that. D-Taggett. D-Taggett, correct. So he's a, he's a great trainer and been around for a long time. And you know what? He's always been the same. He used to work at Freedman's as a stable foreman years ago when I first met him. And he's exactly the same today as what he was then. Just a really good Aussie bloke that works hard. And I mean, I'm really wrapped for the ownership. I know a couple of the guys in the ownership group. And I think, you know, last, last prep, it ran enormous behind Tentiris on that, when it didn't have any weight down the straight that day. We need to declare Tentiris as a big king rising. Correct. I was, I was, yeah, that is very funny. Gareth, we don't need to go over that again. But then. He's got feelings too, Gareth. Yeah, correct, Gareth. But then, but then clearly.
Speaker 22You've never made a mistake, Gareth. I've made. Didn't you say David Hayes was coming back from Hong Kong three years ago? You did. You did.
Speaker 23But just on my Gladiola, I just want to highlight that ran enormous behind Tentiris that day. And then they chased those group races. It probably peaked that day and probably need to have a break. But having said that, they placed it to try to get them. The guys are saying the other day that, you know, she was flying, couple of the boys. And so I'm so happy for them. It's just terrific and great for Johnny too. Did you back her?
Speaker 2How'd you go on the punt on this weekend?
Speaker 23I'll tell you what I did on the weekend. Because you had a shock of the week before. I did. I did. I listened to her. I listened to the great John Kelton. Does anybody know him? Very good. A lot of text messages. He is very good. So Johnny Kelton, I was, I was at home. I didn't go to the races. I was at home. Moved, just moved house. And Johnny Kelton liked a couple of horses. To a bigger one. No. To a bigger one. To a couple of horses he liked in Adelaide in race two. So I backed both of those. One of them hit the line bristler at $7.50. Thank you, Johnny. You beauty. So you're back. And I was back. And then what I did was, I had a good bet on tempted.
Speaker 2Beautiful.
Speaker 23And I was in the backyard actually doing some gardening. And I came in, I'd missed the first 200 meters attempted to race. That's because the, that's because the back fence was that far away from the back of the house. And there it was, eighth one off the fence. I'm vomiting thinking, oh my God, I've done my money here. And then it just went whoosh.
Speaker 2Hey, we're going to take a break. And I'll tell you what, Johnny McArdle, if he gets to the UK, like he said yesterday on Correct Weight with the Noonan boys, they're not going to, he will be the story. One of the stories, if all they talk about taking my buddy,
Speaker 23Johnny McArdle,
Speaker 22he'll be a great like, what's the pommy guy? That's always a bit of a smart. Matty Chapman. Yeah. Him and Matty Chapman going head to head. Sensational.
Speaker 23Tell you what, you don't want to get in the drinking bout with him. He's a machine.
Speaker 2A bit of a different interview from Mr. Massara to Johnny McArdle. It'd be the best.
Speaker 23How good would it be? Johnny, get there, mate. Can we get a, we get some, can we get a GoFundMe page? Can we get to get over there with a crew? It'd be unbelievable. For us, the GoFundMe page for us. Well,
Speaker 2you don't need any GoFundMe page. You sold your business for 700 million, whatever. You're flying. 760. Oh, flying. And he still won't get you a horseway. Greg, time for a break. We'll come back with Zach Pert next. Yeah.
Speaker 1Join the conversation. Text us on 0499 736 736. Live across Australia.
Speaker 2This is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall. Welcome. Welcome back to Giddy Up. Plenty of text messages coming through on the Gareth's Horse and Hound text line. Morning, Gareth. Question for the guys in the means test. With the way car-eating and tempted have come back, will the trainers and owners avoid the Everest now that they're racing for third? And worse, then split the prize money. Will owners and trainers go elsewhere to win other races where they don't have to go halves in the prize money? We've already had a chat about that. That's a possibility. I reckon there'll be a few owners that might try and buy a slot and then they're going to get the money back anyway. And see if they can finish third or fourth and make some money.
Speaker 22I don't reckon you want a slot. I reckon if you've got the right horse, it's not going to matter because people want to be coming to you to do a deal, regardless of how the deal is. Okay. It's going to look different having the good horse in the race. So if he's in the race, and this is what I'd like to ask someone like Bet365, because I don't know, but does it really stuff up the betting if he is in the race?
Speaker 2No, turnover's enormous because people just put like, um, because he's a moral, they just bet big, the bigger punters anyway. On him. What, at a dollar four? Yeah. Yeah. Unbelievable. Oh, I don't know the turnover figures yesterday, but they would be massive.
Speaker 22No, I get that, but you get what I'm trying to say. I mean, does it actually, does it actually hinder the race? Forget about the spectacle from the, from the pure punt point of view and to be fair, that's how we generate our income out of the industry. So is, is it actually a good thing or a negative thing?
Speaker 2When champions race, it's a good thing. You see it with Leap to Fame in the trot, sets all types of records for harness racing. Yeah. Because people just back him because he's Leap to Fame, regardless of the price, really. Um, we're approaching 9:58, Fer, I'll get to this text message from Darren, but he's talking about Johnny O'Neill's football career and it goes for too long. I wouldn't have enough time to read it out. What do you mean by that?
Speaker 23Well, you should spend a bit of time on it.
Speaker 2I, I, I think that Darren might be making this up. No, he's not making it up. He says he's a first time messenger and, um. Good on you, Darren. Who reckons you kicked 22 goals in a game? I did against Yarraville. Unbelievable. Time for a quick break. 150 seconds. Heard him to join us next.
Speaker 1Join the conversation. Text us on 05. 499-736-736. Live across Australia, this is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 2Welcome back to Giddy Up. This is Giddy Up on this Monday, the 7th of September. It's a big hello to you listening on your local SCN track and RSN 927 dials. If you're watching us on racing.com, listening to us on the podcast or the SCN and RSN apps, great to have your company on the Monday Means Test. Zach Pertin's about to join us as we continue on the Means Test with Wayne Hawks and Johnny O'Neill. And, of course, Zach, I think, is live from the golf course in Hong Kong this morning after he did this with his great mate, Cain Rising, at Charting yesterday.
Speaker 5Rising's five in front. The rest must look up and think, oh, no, not this again, because the champ is now six clear of co-partner Prance. And then came Magic Control. Lucky with you. 21.15, he's second split. Look out, Sydney. He's coming back, and he's coming back looking just like that. Cain Rising beat home co-partner Prance.
Speaker 2Yeah, he was amazing. He went 106.11. He nearly beat his own track record by nearly a second. Horses shouldn't be able to run that quick. And Zach Pertin was aboard, of course, Cain Rising. And the champ. Champion jockey joins us. G'day, Zach. Congratulations. And after the race, you said there's improvement in him. So how quick do you think he can go?
Speaker 24Well, I'd be a little bit foolish to think he's going to run any faster than that. But from a fitness perspective, it was his first run for the season. He'd gone in there off the back of a couple of trials. So I'd like to think from a fitness point of view, he's going to improve. But is he going to run any faster? I don't know. You know, Kenny, I did ease him down a little bit again. Maybe run 105 one day. But yesterday's track was lightning fast. They were running fast times all day. It was firm. It was the way he liked it. And I just let him do his thing. There was no use getting involved with the other runners in the race. You know, he's out there to run his own race and to get ready for the Everest. And we didn't see him at his best down there last year. So we feel like we still have a little bit of a point to prove. And we wanted to make sure he did a little bit more in this. And we wanted to make sure he did a little bit more in this. And we wanted to make sure he did a little bit more in this. And we wanted to make sure he did a little bit more in this. And we wanted to make sure he did a little bit more in this. And we wanted to make sure he did a little bit more in this run this year. Because when he got down there for the trial last year and in quarantine, he cheated a little bit on us and got away from us a little bit. So we'll just screw him down a little bit more this time. And if he cruises around in the trial again, well, at least we've got him a little bit more forward than what we had him last year.
Speaker 23Zach, Johnny O'Neill, how are you, bud? Good, thanks, John. Good. Just quickly, mate, this horse here in Australia is just, as you would imagine, creating huge stories every time you step out on him. You've ridden a lot of wonderful horses along the journey. So first of all, where does he sit with you in relation to, you know, the array of horses you've ridden over the journey? And secondly, how does it feel when he really lets go? You know, I mean, I think the listeners would really love to get an understanding of that.
Speaker 24But, yeah, well, firstly, he's separated himself now. He's clearly the best horse that I've ever ridden. And he's possibly going to go down as one of those horses that gets talked about for a century, you know, in the likes of Frankel and Secretariat and Winx and Black Caviar. And he certainly, if he's not at that level, he's getting very close to that level. And he's the type of horse that everyone sets their alarm for to get out of bed to watch. Or if it's during the day, they stop their day to tune in. So it's an honour and a privilege to be a part of his story and his journey. And I'm very thankful for that. And secondly, he's an amazing horse to ride. He feels like he just glides across the ground. And the incredible thing about him is he just doesn't seem to get tired. Whereas most horses, when they're going at that speed and they get tired, they shorten their stride and they become a little bit clunky in their action. DeGasse is building up and they're really starting to gas out. But that doesn't seem to happen to him. He goes along at that speed. And then when I ask him to quicken, he just takes off again. And he can sustain that right through to the line. It's a weird, like I've never ridden another horse that's able to do what he does. Even Beauty Generation, when I was riding him and he used to get out in front and run them into the ground, he would still get tired, you know, the last furlong. This guy, he doesn't seem to get tired. And I know Hazy always throws out there. He wants to run him over a mile. Well, maybe he's got the stamina to run a mile, but I don't ever want to run him at a mile. You know, they stretch Silent Witness out to a mile and that was the end of his career. I think we'll just, in my opinion, we'll just keep him to the sprints. And that way we're not going to bottom him out and we can hopefully get a little bit longer out of him.
Speaker 22Zach, the second, third horse, where do they actually sit in the pecking order? I mean, have you ridden the second or third horse? And where do they actually sit? Actually, where would they fit? Are they group two horses? Are they group one horses?
Speaker 24Yeah, good question. I've ridden the second horse a number of times. I think I might have won his first 10 or so races on him. Where would he sit in Australia as far as a group horse is concerned? It'd be group three, group two maybe. He might be able to fluke a group one under the right circumstances. You know, our second and third best sprinters weren't in that race yesterday. Fast Network was over in Japan and unfortunately he raced up on speed, which doesn't suit him and he pulled up with that throat issue. So he didn't turn up and Helios Express wasn't in the race. So we had our second and third seeds not there. And then those ones are a little bit further down the pecking order. But if you look at the time he run, you can't hide behind that.
Speaker 22Oh, we saw it. I'm not sure it happened, but we saw it. Don't you worry about that. What's something about him that we don't know? What's his quirky little silly thing that he just does only you and him would know? Does he ever? Well, no, he's a very quiet horse. Does he pull up and ever look like some of the great horses?
Speaker 24He knows he's good. He comes back, you know, he sort of bounces back like he hasn't even had a run. But what I will say is that mentally he's improved a lot in the last 12 months. And to give you some idea. About that, and you would understand this, Wayne, dealing with horses every day. Obviously, after his barrier trial last Sunday, he went home and obviously kicked the box or his feed tin or whatever he did and come out of the box Monday morning, lame in his, I think it was his offside right leg. Anyway, it was one of his back legs. So then that swelled up. They had to manage him, look after him at the same time David Hayes was changing. Stables. So his old stable is getting renovated. So we had to go to a new box. So he's in a new environment. And then he had to go through all the tests to be past fit to run and also get on the plane to be able to go to Australia. So he was sedated for a number of hours doing CT tests, doing all the tests that they do. So he's banged his leg, he's trained stable. He's had to go through all the tests, get sedated all in the, in the lead up, in the week lead up to this race and he comes out and performs that way. So. So, uh, I don't think too many horses would be able to do that.
Speaker 2And you know, you were talking about how much money was waged on Cahing Rising there yesterday. It was $15.9 million Australian dollars.
Speaker 22On him.
Speaker 2On him. Like, because they pay out, I think a dollar or five. So the percentage was under a hundred percent. So Zach, do you feel that pressure?
Speaker 24Uh, no, I don't. I don't, it doesn't matter what price the horses are off, my job is to try and give them every chance to win. And I didn't do a great job of that all day yesterday. I had a few moments there where I pulled up afterwards and I thought, what the hell did you do there? Yeah. But, uh, early in the season, everyone's sort of a bit excited and we sort of rode horses out of position a little bit, but, uh, we'll get back into the groove of things.
Speaker 2So you, you can't wait to get to Australia now, obviously he's in quarantine as we speak, you'll have that trial, um, and then he'll be set to win his second Everest. And I think the scary part about all of this. Is that, um, you eased him up, I reckon at the furlong last year in that race, and then you made sure you had a good hit out yesterday that he was going to be a better horse because of the lessons that you learned from your experience last year with him.
Speaker 24Yeah. And, and the experience that he had as well, you know, he's been to Randwick twice now, he's been there for the trial. He's been there for the race. He's more familiar with the environment, the track itself. Um. He's going to be a lot better for it. And physically he's a bigger, stronger, better horse. His performances are better now than they were 12 months ago. So what, what we want now is for him to go down there and put up one of those performances in Australia so that everyone gets to see what he's really made of. It's a shame that the Everest comes up so early in our season. It was a little bit like Romain Seguaria when he won the Cox Plate, like in his lead up run, he went awful. Um, and then he scrambled over the line in the Cox Plate. It's just a difficult time of year. It's a difficult time of year for our horses to travel. But, um, that's, that's what we're faced with. So we're going to deal with it. And hopefully, uh, hopefully we can get him there in a little bit better form.
Speaker 2Now, will March be... a difficult time for him when he comes back to Australia for this Invitational Race SAC. What are you hearing? The pigs fly? Yeah, what are you hearing? The pigs fly. Well, Hazy brought it up, didn't he? You would have listened to the interview. He said that they're talking about it.
Speaker 24Are they talking about it or Hazy's talking about it in his own head?
Speaker 2Well, Johnny Massaro wants to do it. And voicing it. Johnny Massaro wants to do it, doesn't he?
Speaker 22Don't fall in, Zach. Don't fall in.
Speaker 24No, I'm not going to. I can't see him going down to Australia twice in one season. It's a five-week turnaround with the quarantine to get down and back. So if he was to go down there twice, that's all but three months spending quarantine in isolation. It's a little bit hard. Royal Ascot. Royal Ascot.
Speaker 2There you go. Well, Autumn Glow might come to him. Who knows, on the way to Royal Ascot. Maybe. Yeah.
Speaker 24Yeah, that might be poor. That could happen.
Speaker 2That could happen, for sure. Would you enjoy it if it did happen, Zach?
Speaker 24Yeah, on my own deck, for sure. I'd enjoy it more. Yeah.
Speaker 23I don't think it would matter where it was.
Speaker 2Nah, it could be in Timbuktu. Wouldn't matter where it was. What was it like yesterday, opening day?
Speaker 24It was great. I had a good day. Yeah. The Drucker Club do a really good job. They had the dragon dance there. The chief executive turned up to bang the gong. We had a healthy crowd. Obviously, Kate. Dying Rising brought extra people to the track and then his performance really elevated the day. But the track raced well. It was good competitive racing. It's good to be back.
Speaker 2Yeah. And you're happy with the Swans? He's a big Swans fan. Oh, are you? Yeah. Right. Tommy Papley was able to get the job for you. Yeah.
Speaker 24I nearly didn't tune in in disgust because I thought we're going to get flogged. It's going to be a grand final replay. It's going to be disappointing. And I thought, oh, I'll just watch the first quarter and see how we go. Well, then I was hooked, wasn't I?
Speaker 18Yeah.
Speaker 24What a great performance. One of the all-time great performances from a side in not just any game, but obviously in a final series.
Speaker 2Yeah. And Tommy Papley, SEN tracks very own, played the best ever game. I think he's ever played. Kicked five, I think, didn't he? Kicked five. Unbelievable. Yeah, spin it on his finger. He'll be on the Sydney set on Thursday doing the form with Mickey Gannon. And then he comes out and plays like that.
Speaker 23I'll tell you one of the great things about Kying Rising and the horse sack, and I'm sure you would agree. I would agree with this. And I'm sure you experienced this. David Hayes will have plenty of money. Deadly will have plenty. So we won't be paying for any lunches, any drinks. I'm waiting for him to come and just shout and shout and shout. I can guarantee one thing.
Speaker 2He won't have more money than Zach Burton. I can guarantee that.
Speaker 24I'm playing golf with him today, so I'm going to try and get a little bit more money, more of his money into my pocket.
Speaker 2Have you got a Melbourne Cup ride yet, Zach? Forget about it. Forget about the Everest. You've got to win a cup.
Speaker 24Yeah, no, I don't at the moment, but, you know, Donnie keeps saying year after year, he's got to find me something.
Speaker 23Stand by, mate. We've got a few warming up. Well, we've got Point of Law, potentially. Okay. What else have we got? St. George ran very well the other day.
Speaker 22Are you not putting Joe Marrera back on the circle? No, Joe Marrera won't be riding. Okay, just checking. I'm a Zach Burton man. Joe Marrera won't be riding. I'm going to throw that one in.
Speaker 23How much? We've got a few. We've got a few. We'll have a few. We've got a few runners, I think. Yeah. Zah ran, hopefully, if he steps up, probably wouldn't get Zach's weight. Everything you've done, Zach. Middle Earth? Middle Earth? Middle Earth. What about Middle Earth? Ran third last year. Yeah. Mark Zah is just. He'll be riding. He'll be on St. George, I would have thought.
Speaker 22I don't know yet. We'll see. Wayne, what's the handicap at golf, Zach? Two, three? What are you?
Speaker 24No, I'm not down that low yet, but I'm getting there. And I've sucked myself into taking James Cummings on, off the stick. Oh, be careful. Easy. He goes time, yeah?
Speaker 22He goes good. And do you know his mother? He plays off, too. Don't worry. And his mother was, she was clubhouse champion at the golf course at the end of the runway at Mascot. She was, I don't know, what do you call it?
Speaker 23And David doesn't count air swings. So you can't. He doesn't count those. They're not counted, he said.
Speaker 24He's got one of those devices where you drop balls down the inside of your trousers, too. Yeah, buddy Othie has.
Speaker 22Don't worry. Yes, Wayne? Why are you talking to James Cummings? How is he? How has he settled in himself? I mean, you look at people and you think, wow, you know what I mean? You just, you can just look at some people, you know what I mean? You think they're cool and they're relaxed. And how has he settled in, James?
Speaker 24Yeah, he's a very impressive guy, as you know. He comes across very well, speaks well, handles himself really well. He's done everything right so far. He's got around, met a lot of owners. Socially, he's acclimatized very well. But ultimately, he's going to be judged by his success on the track. So he's bought a lot of really nice. Horses, some trial winners, some PPs. So he's going to have nice horses there to work with, but they're not going to be ready immediately. They're going to take a little bit longer. But he's in a good headspace at the moment. But everyone is until they start running horses. And then that's when things become a little bit more difficult.
Speaker 23And Zach, David Eustace, I see he trained to win a first meeting back, too. So he had a reasonably successful first year, I would have thought. How's he going?
Speaker 24Yeah, so he's sort of come here. With a relaxed approach, you know, build them up slowly, get them into a prep and get them to improve run after run. And by doing that, he wasted so many months in the early part of the season and really got going late. But then the season was over. So he's going to change his strategy a little bit this season and try and have them up and running a little bit earlier, which you need to. Because the owners, they can be a little bit impatient. They like to see success as soon as they can get it. So he's made that small adjustment. And he's settling in well. His horses hold their form and run well. And when they're doing that, you just need the right gait, the right run, and you've trained plenty of winners.
Speaker 23And have you got one for the listeners, mate, something you've been doing a bit of work on that might progress through the grades for us, as we're all tuning in, watching a couple of times a week now?
Speaker 24Yeah.
Speaker 23Don't take pain in your eyes.
Speaker 24Not really. No, there's nothing coming immediately to my mind. So that tells you I don't know. I'm going to have a baby there that's a rocket that I'm ready to let go.
Speaker 2He wouldn't tell us anyway. But let's be honest. Most trainers are judged on the success if Zach Burton's riding for them. Because they tell me even owners take horses off certain trainers if Zach doesn't ride one of their horses. So if you're in bed.
Speaker 24Well, some trainers learn the hard way.
Speaker 22If you're in bed, Gareth, and you were there with Jay, Mac and Zach, who do you kiss goodnight first? Oh, shut up. Who do you kiss goodnight first, Gareth?
Speaker 18Well, whoever gives me one of those watches.
Speaker 22Jay, Mac, Scotty, mate.
Speaker 2Hey, Zach, always a pleasure catching up, mate. Good luck on the golf course. And Wayne still thinks he's a chance with Priyasa as well.
Speaker 22It's a chance. It's called no chance.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 24All right. Thanks, guys.
Speaker 2Thanks, mate. See you, mate. There's Zach Burton. So that Invitational race we're talking about, obviously, it's a million to one. There's no Invitational. There's no Invitational. There's no Invitational.
Speaker 22There's no Invitational, mate. What about that? What he just said? Now, as a horse trainer, the one thing I took out of that whole interview, he swapped stables. So he's gone and had hours of scans last Monday morning, I think it was last Monday morning. He's then had to swap stables, go to a new environment, and out he's come. I mean, bloody hell. He's had a couple of pretty hard picket fences up against him, and he's jumped both of them. That's quite incredible. I mean, it's bad timing. I wouldn't have thought Hazy would have been too happy about having to move stables, because obviously, it had to be done, because you would have said, "Wait until today, and you're not going to put the horse out," but just shows you the horse's attitude and his brain.
Speaker 2We could have two of the shortest price favorites in Autumn Glow and the King Charles and Coyne Rising, of course, in the Everest come that day in Sydney.
Speaker 23Well, they're both wonderful horses, so I mean, I think from a punting aspect, it's going to be interesting to see. I know you said the turnover was huge yesterday, but I would imagine Autumn Glow's going to
Speaker 25start $1.50, $1.40, $1.50, and Coyne Rising's going to start-
Speaker 2I think with the Whirlpool, you've got to get $1.05, so that's the shortest that they can be. So what are the punters that just put all their money in?
Speaker 23Yeah, but Autumn Glow's not going to be $1.05, it'll be two zone ones, it's not going to be any shorter than that. Well-
Speaker 2Might be. She's Alibi's not going there. It might be. Yeah, she's going to the Maccabi Diva, she's Alibi.
Speaker 22What are you beating? She's going to the Maccabi Diva. She's going to the Maccabi Diva.
Speaker 25She's going to the Maccabi Diva. She's going to the Maccabi Diva. She's going to the Maccabi Diva. She's going to the Maccabi Diva. She's going to the Maccabi Diva. She's going to the Maccabi Diva. She's going to the Maccabi Diva.
Speaker 22She's going to the Maccabi Diva. She's going to the Maccabi Diva. She's going to the Maccabi Diva. She's going to the Maccabi Diva. She's going to the Maccabi Diva. She's going to the Maccabi Diva. She's going to the Maccabi Diva. She's going to the Maccabi Diva. She's going to the Maccabi Diva. She's going to the Maccabi Diva. She's going to the Maccabi Diva. She's going to the Maccabi Diva. She's going to the Maccabi Diva. She's going to the Maccabi Diva. She's going to the Maccabi Diva. She's going to the Maccabi Diva. She's going to the Maccabi Diva.
Speaker 23She's going to the Maccabi Diva.
Speaker 22She's going to the Maccabi Diva. She's going to the Maccabi Diva. She's going to the Maccabi Diva. She's going to the Maccabi Diva. She's going to the Maccabi Diva.
Speaker 23She's going to the Maccabi Diva. She's going to the Maccabi Diva. She's going to the Maccabi Diva. She's going to the Maccabi Diva. She's going to the Maccabi Diva. She's going to the Maccabi Diva.
Speaker 2She's going to the Maccabi Diva. She's going to the Maccabi Diva.
Speaker 23She's going to the Maccabi Diva. She's going to the Maccabi Diva. She's going to the Maccabi Diva.
Speaker 2She's going to the Maccabi Diva. She's going to the Maccabi Diva.
Speaker 1She's going to the Maccabi Diva. She's going to the Maccabi Diva. She's going to the Maccabi Diva. She's going to the Maccabi Diva. She's going to the Maccabi Diva. She's going to the Maccabi Diva. 736. Live across Australia. This is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 2Welcome back to Giddy Up. This is the Monday Means Test. It's 10.22. Some news just coming through from Tony Golan. Pembrey will be aimed up now at the Coolmore. She was disappointing there on the weekend, so they'll bypass the rest of the Sydney Carnival and she will go to the Coolmore. I don't know why.
Speaker 23Listen to you. Why? I don't know why. Why? Got beat 100 yards on the weekend. Yeah. At every opportunity.
Speaker 2She wasn't at her best, I would imagine.
Speaker 23Here's a great Kieran Marr ringing me back. Yeah, do you reckon he'll answer?
Speaker 22I don't know. We'll just pad while you talk to Kieran on the phone.
Speaker 2We'll go to the oh no's. The kick-off proceedings. Johnny's having a conversation with Kieran Marr live
Speaker 23on air. Mood said the overhead view no good. No good. Oh, yes. And Kieran agrees. He says no
Speaker 2good. On racing.com. Excuse me. Yeah, the first 100 metres. There you go. Yeah. Yeah. I won't
Speaker 23tell you what he said over the phone, but anyway. I've got to go. I'm on the radio. Never call us
Speaker 22again, Blake. Never in your life.
Speaker 23Any winners?
Speaker 2We'll just go quiet while Johnny has a conversation with Kieran Marr. Anyway. Do we get the rating from Kieran? No, we haven't got it yet, but very good.
Speaker 25September's airborne. Get ready. Look out. Good luck. I'll come back to you. See you.
Speaker 22Hey, oh no's? Why no? Oh no's. There was only one from yesterday. Oh no when he comes, that bloody car you're rising. That's an oh no for anything and everything. Yeah. No, I think it was, you know what? The track played enormous at Sandown for where it was going to go, and having it as a good four, it could have ended up being an oh no, and we know that the races got called off, and the Chautauqua Stakes, I think Wednesday, isn't it? Yeah. So they did well to get through the meeting, but you know, it could have been an oh no at Sandown, but it definitely wasn't, so that was great to tick that box and get the job done before the freaky
Speaker 23storm came in. Yep. I'd like to get an update on Closer to Free. What's going on with it? It pulled up lame, didn't get the trip, but I don't think it's... And Pembrey was my other one. Okay. Well, it had a good run, I would have thought. But isn't that
Speaker 22this time of the year where what we're thinking now and where we end up at the end of the Spring Carnival is so far apart, and that happens every single year, this time of the year, every week there's something that punctures, then on the flip side, there's going to be something good that wins a Manicato that's going to end up going to Sydney for the Everest and things like that, so swings and roundabouts. And I reckon if you're tempted
Speaker 23there's an oh no too, because as you just said, Kaying Rising's coming. So if it wasn't coming, it'd just be winning. Well, I don't know about that. What do you mean? What's going to beat Tempted? Well... It'll clearly run second as it did last year. We'll all be fighting out
Speaker 2for that. I would have thought. I hate the overhead shot. A lot of feedback coming through for that overhead shot. I think it's great. Yeah.
Speaker 22Because what it does is it actually shows you where the horses are. So the point is, do you want to be side-on and look at all the horses going side-on? I reckon the overhead shot's great. Because you see a hell of a lot more on the overhead shot than what you do on the side-on shot.
Speaker 2I think that the overhead shot can be used more in replays than watching it live. I reckon it's pretty
Speaker 22good for both. And what it also does too is if there's any interference, that becomes a yes, yes, yes. Because then that way we can all see the actual interference. I think it's good for educating people. Talking
Speaker 2about moods and Kieran Marr, what do you make of the decision from Kieran Marr, which is fair enough that's his apprentice, that James Johnson can only be used by Kieran Marr runners? That he doesn't allow him...
Speaker 23I tried to book him for a couple of horses that aren't trained by Kieran. Not allowed. What did you make of that? So we're not even extending it to friends and owners. I would call myself a friend. Friends and owners. No, we couldn't get on.
Speaker 22So he's an apprentice to Kieran Marr and he's only allowed Kieran's horses. And what was the reasoning behind that? Because
Speaker 2Kieran wants to use him so he gets the most out of him with the claim. Yeah. So he doesn't...
Speaker 22When you have your boss and your boss tells you that's what you do, that's what you do. I remember Stephen King was the next up and coming superstar and Johnny Marr did not let him come to town until he was 19. Stephen King could have been there 12 months early. But Johnny Marr said, you work for me, you're my kid and you are not going to town because you're not ready. Stephen King went to town and never looked back and won a Melbourne Cup at about 23 years of age. I'll tell you what they are doing
Speaker 23to Jabba is they are doing the full Jabba Hockey. They are doing the full service treatment to him, I can tell you. So his comments, the way that he's speaking, oh well now, incredible. So they must be doing a lot of work on him business wise and professional, from a professional perspective as well. Do you know what, I can
Speaker 2understand why some rival trainers have got upset or disappointed with the Kira Marr decision just to only allow Jabba to ride for himself of course, but then you can see it from here inside. If he thinks he's got this gun, he's putting all this time into, he doesn't want to give his claim away to other trainers when he's running a business.
Speaker 22Plenty of apprentices would be dirty on their boss for their bosses saying no or yes that's the opposite, yes you are going to do this, no you cannot or yes you can. So that's what you're apprenticed to and that's your boss. I mean at the end of the day Gareth, we all have to answer to somebody. Donald Trump doesn't answer to anyone I think but other than him, seriously, we all have to answer to somebody. So if Kieran wants to use that to his advantage and keep the claim for himself and his stable clients, I mean, you know what the bottom line is? That's like having him as a stable rider. He's my exclusive stable rider and he only rides for me. And he obviously identified him in a little bit. and got him across. Well, that's how it is.
Speaker 2Mate, you might start with a rider, that's it. What do you reckon if Andy Macketh went to Kieran and says, I want to use this jockey to climb two on one of my other horses, not trained by you?
Speaker 23I think Kieran would probably stick solid if he's got the rule. Yeah, I think so. I mean, I don't think he... So what are the other oh-noes, Johnny? No, they're the only... I've got a lot of yes, yes, yeses. I saw a lot of really nice horses on the weekend. Let's get to the yes, yes, yeses. Enough oh-noes for me.
Speaker 8Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes, yes, yes! Yes, yes, yes!
Speaker 2I'll kick this off. Pretty Baby, what a performance there. The daughter of Barbados to do what she did there in the Atlantic Jewel.
Speaker 23Did you see it win the other day in Adelaide? It was unbelievable. Missed a start five lengths the other day. One good. And was that far back on the corner. It just couldn't... There's no way known it could win the other day. One good. And it just went whoosh down the outside. It'll win the Thousand Guineas. It'll win the Thousand Guineas for sure. It's a very... It's a 4.50 favourite for the Thousand Guineas. It's a very nice horse. Yeah.
Speaker 25They can get a good horse, those blokes. The South Australians. Well, no, no. Well, didn't they train G-Tar? Gordon Richards, yeah.
Speaker 22Yeah, and Moily, yeah. Yeah.
Speaker 25They can get a good horse, those two.
Speaker 22He'd been around for a long time, Gordon Richards. Yeah. I don't know him, but he can get a good horse. Good fella. Good fella. Does a really good job.
Speaker 2So she was my yes, yes, yes.
Speaker 23Well, I've got plenty of them. I saw some really nice horses on the weekend. Tony and Kelvin... McAvoy? Unleashed. Yes, McAvoy. Unleashed a horse called La Polo. Darby horse. A lovely young colt. Now, to miss the start there the way it did, come off that, what's that surface we don't bet on? The polytrack or whatever it is. Oh, the polytrack. It came off the synthetic, and then to come down, miss the start as it did, Harry Coffey again didn't, I'm pretty sure Harry wrote, looked like it was Harry. He did, yeah. Was very, very patient, just went whoosh. It was a huge run.
Speaker 22Isn't he riding good, Harry Coffey?
Speaker 23He's a very good rider, Harry.
Speaker 22But you know what he's done? You nailed it. He's actually got more patience. Oh. And he's got so patient. He's got so patient, and he's so cool, and he, the old, plenty of times telling your jockey instructions, before you go, count to three. Harry's just counting to three before he goes, and he's just keeping the horses balanced, balanced, balanced, and they're hitting the line so strong.
Speaker 23I'll tell you, Adam Bramwood, a buddy of mine, has got a horse called Wolfgat. Wasn't it a run? Very good. It's a very, very nice horse. Anthony and Sam Freedman have got, so I think we have a look for it over the spring. Pretty baby of highlighted as well. Now, I saw a horse in the Furious Stakes. Hmm. A horse called Striking Alibi. Waller's got it. It is a horse from Perth. Oh, yeah, I saw that. Very good. Quite about it. And there was another horse in Melbourne that Beggy trains called Prolifergate. Yes. Gray and big. Cool. That could be a thousand games. He's a good horse. It's a really good horse, too. So, I saw some really nice, young, progressive horses, which was good. Gavin Bedkin's another yes, yes, yes.
Speaker 2He's got his team going in great, great form at the moment. Another double for him on Saturday.
Speaker 23Blind Rays was good, too. Trent and Nat are good to be able to step up off that sort of run over the carnival last year and then to go bang. And so, there's some nice horses coming through.
Speaker 22There's been some great yes, yes, yeses, but we've already spoke about it, but this is the yes, yes, yes segment. John McArdle, Jamie Mott, they're on top for this week. They get the three Brownlow votes.
Speaker 2And the other yes, yes, yes, I can't believe we haven't mentioned it yet, but the Goodwood's got a new name.
Speaker 22Yes. Yeah. Yes. What's it called? The McIverney.
Speaker 23Yes. Is it really? McIverney Goodwood. That is very good. Yeah. So, that was announced on Saturday night. We love that. That is so great.
Speaker 2So, and well under Bruce Hall of Fame. He's a Hall of Famer in Australian racing.
Speaker 23He should be Hall of Fame of anything to do with sport anywhere around the world.
Speaker 22But what he has done for South Australian racing, especially in the latter years, has been phenomenal. He's the one that helped push to get the carnival where it is in the last few years and get the prize money up. And he's got the key to Parliament House, and he's been going to government and talking to those people in the top end of town. So to acknowledge him. And the Goodwood didn't have a – it's been the Goodwood handicap. I don't know whether it's had a sponsor for a long, long time. But, yep, so you've got Adelaide for the John Hawks into the Bruce McIverney. And if you think about the Bruce McIverney, it could end up being like the TJ Smith.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 22Like as far as the name-wise that, you know, what's the Goodwood? Goodwood's a suburb in Adelaide and, yeah. The Goodwood's probably – it hasn't – obviously it's had its challenges
Speaker 2from where it is situated these days. Well, it's a handicap.
Speaker 22It's not worth enough money, you know what I mean? If it was way for age – But they're playing around with that, pushing the money. The money's getting better. But if it was way for age, it was worth $3 million, we'd get better horses go there. So at the end of the day, it is what it is, and it fits a really, really good spot. And, you know, it's – you're not going to get K and Rising and those sort of horses ever going to go to Goodwood.
Speaker 23I've just got to give you one other, if you don't mind. Like Kieran moved to – and I know that you'll always say this, but Kieran moved to Crown Lodge, as we know, in Sydney. They're operating at 32% strike rate now. Yeah. Out of – Those facilities, as you would know, are absolutely extraordinary. So, you know, for him to have been able to secure that and operate at that level, knowing how competitive the racing is up there, Hawksy, and again, you know that better than anyone with the numbers that Chris Waller's got and the numbers that Gay's got, that's extraordinary.
Speaker 2I think that would be one of his goals because he's been mid-table in the Sydney Premiership.
Speaker 23It'll be strike rate. It'll be prize money. I would have thought that'll be – and look like he did last year with Jimmy Starr winning the sprint. Series championship. I think he won it maybe the two years prior with Bella. Correct. He'll probably do the same with Tempted, I would have thought.
Speaker 22And you look at Sydney, Chris Waller dominates, but he doesn't dominate as far as the Premiership in Victoria. Yeah. But he can still dominate over the Spring Carnival. So you probably – Gay has always looked at it and said, I want to be the best in New South Wales. And one thing about New South Wales compared to Victoria is, point in case was the Sydney Swans match on the weekend. My brother took his wife, Claire, and rang up. On Saturday – oh, it rang up. He went to Ticketek Saturday morning, got two tickets. How the hell could you go to a final and get two tickets? So my point is, Gay Waterhouse has always wanted to be, you know, chief bottle washer in Sydney. And so Sydney's a winning state. Sydney – put it this way. Melbourne, you can bury it for Richmond, you can bury it for Carlton, you can bury it for Eston. We still will turn up. Sydney, they do not. Okay, that's the point you're making. They do not. They do not turn up in Sydney.
Speaker 25And no theme song for the Blues this week for you?
Speaker 2No, no, no. You're carrying on largely. Anyway. I've got to take a break, boys. They went really good, Kevin. Do I have to? I've got to take a break. We are running out of time, as we always do. This is the Monday Means Test.
Speaker 1Join the conversation. Text us on 0499 736 736. Live across Australia, this is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 2Jeez, there's so many text messages coming through on the Gareth Horson text line.
Speaker 22How's your dog? How's your dog? Good. Yeah, how is your dog? We don't want to waste time on Bobby. Has your dog been biting? You're biting, you're still? No, he wrecked my bag today. What do you mean wasting time on Bobby?
Speaker 2Hang on, hang on, hang on. What did he do? He wrecked your bag. He wrecked my bag this morning, Bobby.
Speaker 22Hey, Johnny, what did you do? I nearly lost it at him. We're the Grand Prix trackies. That's where Gareth takes a dog for a walk. Yeah, yeah. What about the swans?
Speaker 2Well, they nearly killed us the other day. They were more aggressive than- He got from chasing the swans to being shot in the house and scared of the swans. You wanted to bring up something about- I do.
Speaker 23I just want to speak about the variety of ownership opportunities that exist and just get everyone's opinion, maybe you can get a couple of texts in and you can address them in the next hour if we're not here, just around the micro shares. Obviously the My Racehorse model has worked really well and stacks of people are getting and enjoying it and Kieran obviously launched his yesterday called Unbridled Racing. So anybody who wants to get involved, that horse ran just that Bendigo in the first called Over the Bear. It was a huge win, a very nice horse. So I think it goes live pretty soon. So I'm just wondering whether people are really keen to jump into that, obviously pay a fee I would imagine for a period of time and be involved in the racing connection piece. It seems to have worked really well with Benny and he's got a lot of horses across the My Racehorse group. So this will no doubt work for Kieran and the team. So look out for it when you see it. Hawksy, your opinion on that? Are you a supporter? Are you a supporter and trying to grab a heap of new people into the industry? Obviously you are, but.
Speaker 22Well, there's a lot of people and I've said this before. I mean, you go to a pub or a club on a weekend, they're wall to wall with a form guide in theory, aren't they, watching our products. So this gives small owners a big, big opportunity. I mean, we are the only country in the world where you can be on the dole and you can race a racehorse. It's as simple as that. How much does it cost?
Speaker 23Gareth's been doing it for years. How much does it cost? I don't know. I'm not sure, but I'm sure.
Speaker 2Look, it'll be well.
Speaker 23No.
Speaker 2How much? Well, imagine like, why aren't more people doing it than you?
Speaker 23Well, I'm sure they do.
Speaker 2I mean, if you sit back and have a look at the amount of people.
Speaker 22You still have to cover the 20,000 people and that's a lot of people to get involved. They have been very successful. But great way to get involved.
Speaker 23Great way to get to stables and have a tour and get out and enjoy.
Speaker 2Yeah, 100%. 100%. I've got to take a break and then I'll come back to the text messages. Yes. Zach, we went far too long with that interview, but he was great. So we'll take a break and we'll come back with some text messages next.

Speaker 2This is Giddy Up on a Monday Means Test. We forgot to talk about Well Written when we didn't forget it's on the rundown.
Speaker 23We've been wondering where it was and what was going on. It should have been. It was a very good win. Won't get any win here. She's an alibi, but it was a good win. No. Won't get any win here, Autumn Glow, if it ever gets. Baywack could have beat Baywack. Not over 1,400 on a weight for age. Yeah. Yeah, 1,500. Well, they won't push. Are they going to push Baywack down to 1,500? No. I think they're going to come back to the Everest, aren't they? They're not going to.
Speaker 2Is he Manicato-ing?
Speaker 23Yeah, Manicato. Yeah.
Speaker 2Let's get to these text messages. Sam says, hi, G. Easily the run of the day with a breathtaking performance was tempted in the Concord Stakes, showing explosive speed and a genuine group one performance. I see her as the star of the spring and could prove to be Australia's best sprinter. Hard to argue. That's Sam. Good morning, Gareth. First time ever messaging. I played under-18s football with Johnny O'Neill. He was pretty much a champion. I am fairly sure he hit 22 goals against Yarraville in one match. Really? Easily got his 100 for the year. That's from Darren. Well, Darren's obviously a good judge.
Speaker 22That's true. 22 goals. It's a long time ago. 22 goals pre-game. What about during the game?
Speaker 23Can I read this one? John O'Neill is clueless. I'd like to oppose. I'd like to oppose everything that he says. I hope he keeps talking. I'm going to lay everything he likes. Tempted will never beat head-to-wall again. If you can't work out, you shouldn't watch the horse races anymore. GK all day. There you go. Who's GK all day?
Speaker 2I don't know. Don't know. Can a live another day challenge car-ing rising? That's from Dan. Stop it, please. Yeah. Hi, team. Great show this morning. Thank you for the review of Hedley Grange on Friday before he was my yes, yes, yes on Saturday. What a horse.
Speaker 23He's a bloody good horse, that horse. That was a very, very good win. Get back to where he was. Get up on the route. It was a good ride and a good win.
Speaker 22Doesn't he have those underrated horses, Joe Pryor? Yeah, he does. And they are not A-grade up in everyone's grill. They are genuine B-grade. No one cares about them, and they just keep winning.
Speaker 2Gavin Bedgegood is flying it, to be fair. He's been doing it for a long time. In my opinion, he's the best up-and-coming trainer in Victoria, and the results speak for themselves. I'm not sure why it's considered surprising anymore. Is it only surprising because his surname isn't Marr, Hayes, or Waller? Give the bloke the credit he deserves. He's doing an outstanding job. I think we have, Michael. You know, I get sick of people saying, oh, because he's Gavin Bedgegood, he's not another big stable that we don't give him credit. I think we give credit to Gavin Bedgegood and a few other trainers for the results that they're getting. But they haven't got Group 1 horses, so Gavin's been able to win Group 1s. He won in New Zealand, of course, with Kingswood. They do an excellent job, and they could do it. Great job if they got a Group 1 horse.
Speaker 22The up-and-coming one always gets me. He's been around for a while. That's my point, exactly. He's a good bloke. He's a ripper.
Speaker 23Great trainer, but a good bloke.
Speaker 2And he does deserve opportunities, but the owners are going to give him the horses, I guess. Only morons don't bet on race their horses synthetic. Packing them our best winter surf is better than any winter turf. That's from Tuddy. He's calling you two morons. No, he's not calling you one. We get who he's talking about. That's okay.
Speaker 22You know what? It's an opinion-based industry, and we're all at our opinion.
Speaker 23Just wondering what the boys' thoughts are with the travel of the horse for the postponed races. Persian Spirit spends four hours traveling up and down.
Speaker 2So Persian Spirit from Warrnambool went to the races. The races transferred, those two races transferred to Wednesday now, Wayne. So how much would that affect their ability to perform at their best?
Speaker 22Look, it certainly can, especially if you have a horse that gets pretty uptight and pretty, nervous and everything like that. But I suppose the only thing I could say about it is, is that at least it's fair. Everyone's in the same position. The trainers would have decided this morning to have a gallop for Wednesday. So if you wanted to, so that horse there, you went, I've just traveled four hours to Warrnambool, four hours home. Yeah. I don't think it needs a gallop this morning. Whereas someone that trained at, let's say a pack and a more cram, but around the corner from Sandown might've said, no, no, we need to give it a breeze up this morning. So. It's unfortunate, but at least we're going to have the opportunity to run the stakes race on Wednesday.
Speaker 2I had a micro share in Dusty Tycoon, got the experience, a horse running in a magic mill. which was unbelievable. Micro shares are a great idea, more eyes on the sport, and whether you have 100% or 1%, you'll just cheer just as loud if your horse wins.
Speaker 22100% you do, because owners do not stand there and look at the percentage they own of a... Do you, Johnny? You don't own 100% own...
Speaker 23No chance. That's right. The whole idea is to get as many of your mates and friends and family and everybody into the horses as you can to enjoy.
Speaker 2Boys, what's the firm with St. George and Saran for the Melbourne Cup? Do you think especially St. George could stay the trip even with his foot issues resolved? Really hoping Zara's on Middle Earth. Keep up the great work, lads. That's from Bob from Bathurst.
Speaker 23Yeah, look, both of those horses are really progressive. I was identified them a long time ago. Zaran is a newer addition to the team. Ran terrific the other day, and we certainly think he'll progress to the Cup. St. George, as I said last week, he had really bad feet when he came out. We had a lot of problems. He strained at Fingal, but the wizard, we call him, Johnny Bunting, the probably, well, we would classify him as the greatest farrier ever to show a horse, fixed his feet. Yeah. So he was walking around in a pigsty. Yes. So he's fixed his feet. So he's right to go St. George.
Speaker 2He's right. The overhead shot is a leak and see exactly what is happening. Side-on is compressed and optically misleading. Sprinters owners will avoid Everest, run and everything else. Moody said, she's alibi my not running the King Charles. So Moody told Andrew Eddy on racing.com there in an article that Andrew put together that he just doesn't want to take that horse to Sydney twice in two weeks, which is fair enough.
Speaker 23So does it go to the Turek then?
Speaker 2Yeah, probably.
Speaker 23Most likely. Well, that's no good for Evaporate because it was a sit and steer in that, but it won't be now. He was good the other day. He ran terrific.
Speaker 22Yeah, look, really well placed. He's a lovely horse. But that's another one of those like Headley Grains just keeps doing a job. Yeah, he's a very good horse.
Speaker 2Boys did a good job with him. Yeah. We'll take a break. We'll come back with plenty more. In fact, we'll wrap up the Monday Means Test next.
Speaker 22Okay, Gareth.
Speaker 1Join the conversation. Text us on 0499 736 736. Live across Australia. This is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 2Plenty of text messages coming through. What do you think of Gay Waterhouse's post along with Rob on social media regarding the Derby? It should be staying at $2,500. You know what? It happens at this time of the year or around this time anyway. Every year. Yeah, every year, the distance of the Derby. It's 2,500 metres. If you want to race over 2,000 metres, go to Sydney the week before.
Speaker 22And that's what people probably will do and do. And the Sydney trainers, aka Waller, probably leave them in Sydney and then decide whether they come down for the Derby or not. But look, you know, what comes first, the chicken or the egg? If you ran to 2,000, you'd have Corfey, you'd have Phil Guinea's form, you'd have all that sort of form and everything. And, you know, the Derby's very difficult today because we don't breed staying horses. Because I know we've had half yours and what was Sheila Laxton's Melbourne Cup? Knight's Choice. Knight's Choice. We've had two in the last three years. I think it was by extreme choice. Yeah, yeah. We've had a couple of Aussie winners of the Melbourne Cup. Look at all the staying races and they've all got... Just keep it at 25. Most of them are European. Yeah. Well, what you're trying to do is you're trying to improve the race because they've been put on notice that the Derby has been lagging and lacking. So now everyone's got the Derby. Just give it more prize money. Well, then that could work. Yeah. But the thing about it is, is that where do all those three-year-olds go when they turn four? You don't see them again. You don't see them. You don't see them again.
Speaker 2You want to challenge the trainers. Racing's becoming boring if you give us another 2,000 metre group one race because there's a race in Sydney the week before that's the Derby. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But does that... It's the oldest race that we've got. Does that really matter though? It does. That's the spring champion, right? Yeah, the spring champion.
Speaker 22So it's a totally different spectacle, 2,000 versus 2,500, really? Is it? Well, is it? But it's a challenge for the trainers to get there. You're trying to have slot... You're trying to have races, match races. The start of this show, you're all about invitational races, match races. Same, same. But yet, so you're wanting the best of the best to get together, but now you're saying leave the Derby at 2,500, aren't you? Well, you're not going to get the... Well, you'll get 2,000 metre groups. But it's a three-year-old race. And you'll also get milers that'll stretch to 2,000. I mean, Bob Baffert told the Newgate guys one day, he said, mate, he said, you buy the horse. He said, even as a sprinter, he said, it's my job to stretch it to 2,000. You let me... And Tom from SF Bloodstock told me that, and I thought that's probably a pretty fair call for a trainer to an owner.
Speaker 23So, G, talk to me about the Maccabi Diva Saturday. Yes. Hawksy? It's all over, isn't it? Talk to me about this. She's an alibi. $1.50, Sir Delius $4.50. Now, should Sir Delius be $4.50? $4.50 versus she's an alibi, $1.50? I don't reckon. I reckon they're a bit closer. I think he's great value at $4.
Speaker 22Remember Sir Delius, this time last year, was arguably nearly one of the greatest horses in the country and was...
Speaker 23Maybe at 2,000. Maybe she beats him at a mile, but he's a very, very good horse.
Speaker 22Yeah, but it's Flemington, too. So, you know what you want? You want both horses to have the great run in transit and let the best horse on the day win.
Speaker 23Brightside, $8.
Speaker 2Yeah, the interesting part out of this race is Brightside, $9. $9, okay. He won this race, and he called it a day. He could get a Softly once again up front. Eliana's, we'll see how she's come through that Winkstakes where she was disappointing. Then you've got horses like, does Birdman or Buckaroo? Because you're going to split them up, aren't you? One's going to go to the Underwood, one goes to the Maccabi Diva. Whoever goes to the Underwood out of those two is a winning chance in a group one. Birdman and Buckaroo? Yeah.
Speaker 23Yeah, I would have thought. So, which one goes? They'll probably run it against your horse. Yeah, Cosmic Crusader. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2So, they both go to the Underwood.
Speaker 23Well, I would hope they would. Yes. And I would like, I'd like Light Inventory Man to go to the Maccabi Diva. So, when do you make your, like, do you know? No, that'll be Chris and Ozzy's call during the week. Yeah. Look, he'll split them up for sure, but I mean, I would love them both to go there. Yeah. Give ourselves a great chance, because you're not going to beat She's an Alibi here, I don't believe anyway. No. Not over a mile.
Speaker 22Well, if she doesn't beat you, Sir Delius will. Yeah.
Speaker 23Yeah.
Speaker 16That's what I mean. Yeah, probably. The Underwood.
Speaker 22It's going to be good to get him back, Sir Delius, and let's have a real good look at him again, because he is such a good horse, and I suppose if you look at it from an upside point of view, he didn't get hammered last spring, because he couldn't run for the problems that he had.
Speaker 23So, he goes here, then he goes Turnbull.
Speaker 22He'll be there. Yeah, Turnbull.
Speaker 2Do you know the problem that racing in Victoria might have, and there was this situation last year, I forgot a crystal ball looking for the next month or so, is that the field sizes for races like the Fian, the Underwood, and even the Might and Power might be in trouble, because all of these good weight for age horses, they can't do everything.
Speaker 4No.
Speaker 2And they need to, like Chris Wallace, Chris Wallace sticks to his pattern. Maccabi, David, Turnbull, Cox, Plain. So, like a horse like Buckaroo, and also Birdman, they're probably better to go to these.
Speaker 23Underwood, and then the 2000. Yeah, which is probably what they will do. I think Chris Wallace is going to keep Buckaroo to 2,000 metres, 1,800, 2,000 metres this time in anyway. I don't think he's going to stick to it.
Speaker 2But there's not enough horses to fill up these. But there never is. No.
Speaker 22There never is. But also, too, what you're looking at, is you're looking at the weather at the moment, because it's a bit hit and miss. Yeah. In Melbourne. Because Sydney was 31 degrees there on Saturday in Sydney. What a fair thing. 31 degrees. If that was down here, we'd be roasted. We wouldn't be left. There'd be nothing left of us. So, each week, it can be so rain-affected at the moment. So, trainers are looking at that sort of thing as well. But the middle has dropped. There's no doubt about that. The last 20 years, the middle has dropped, and from the middle to the top is getting thinner and thinner. So, you're right. There are... Not enough good horses to be running around in the great races. But doesn't that all get back to, is there too many group ones? Is there too many of these races? I mean, the fear is not a good one.
Speaker 2Well, there's too many races back-to-back for the same horses. But that's what I'm saying. Yeah, 100. And with Sydney now with the hill stakes...
Speaker 23It's never been any different. It's just that there's one or two standouts.
Speaker 2No, but Sydney has changed a lot around. Changed it with the hill stakes and all that. The King Charles.
Speaker 22And put... Mate, the hill stakes was a... You know, superimposing those horses for not much money. Is it two million or something? It's two million. Yeah, that's exactly right. It's a two million dollar race.
Speaker 23I think the Turnbull is 750 grand or something. It is. It is, wow.
Speaker 22So was the Memsie. Yeah.
Speaker 2So, that's not about prize money. That's because Chris Waller's got this program to get to a Cox Plate, which is the big grand final. Sure. The hill stakes, you get Lindemann and those horses going there instead of coming for one of those races. Is that a good run on Saturday? Lindemann was pretty good. It's a good horse, mate.
Speaker 22Like, I mean, he had such a hard run first up and I thought, wow. Can you believe?
Speaker 23I mean, seriously, from a punting aspect. So tough. I know that the track was in. I mean, great, Nick. Can you back fangirl off the map on Saturday? It was always going to lead.
Speaker 22But that's your wink stakes for him. And everyone looked at her and went, ah, you know, she hadn't come back after the other race. She went terrible. On Saturday.
Speaker 23I don't think she went any good.
Speaker 22Do you think she went any good? I reckon she went better than what she did first up in the weeks. Oh, yeah, no, I would agree with that.
Speaker 23But Lindemann won by a third.
Speaker 22Yeah, but to be fair, they trot-walked Cannon and sprinted for home. Nashville was giggling. Yeah, but he was giggling. You should have bet up then with Lindemann.
Speaker 2He was giggling. 70, I think the other horse was. We've got $4 on the weekend preview mega boost. I don't know if you, yeah. Hey, I'll take a break. I've got, we've had so many text messages, which is great. I've picked out the best 20. It's going to be quick hands, quick comments, but we'll read them out straight after our next break. And we'll go for five or so minutes after 11 o'clock here for the means test on Giddy Up on this Monday morning.
Speaker 1Join the conversation. Text us. 1 0 4 double 9 7 3 6 7 3 6 live across Australia. This is Giddy Up.
Speaker 2Welcome back to Giddy Up. This is the Monday Means Test as we welcome in our friends listening to us on SEN Turf right throughout WA. So they join us on RSN, SEN Track. And of course, if you're watching us on racing.com and a big hello to all of our friends who listen to us on the podcast. A lot of people listen to us on the podcast. So thanks for doing that. Let's get to the text messages. Years ago, I made a great quit on Rockin' Horse at 100 to 1. I backed it because it had run 108 for 1200 in New Zealand. Bloody hell, 106, carting, rising. What could beat it? That's from Brian. Hey, gents. Do you think it's easy decision for the owners and trainers of a sprinting three-year-old colt to bypass the Everest this year after the Golden Rose and concentrate on the Coolmore, especially the likes of Guesthouse and St. Gothard with the Coolmore ownership being potentially third up instead of fourth up in that race, Wayne?
Speaker 22No. You wouldn't run a slipper winner in the Everest, would you?
Speaker 2I think that's the plan.
Speaker 22I think that's what they're going to do. Really?
Speaker 23I think so. Would it hurt it? Having said that, Mick, both of those boys are very good judges. So watching car-ying yesterday, they might.
Speaker 22It wouldn't be what I'd want to do. I'd be trying to run in the Coolmore and make a good thing of it.
Speaker 2Mick Price's philosophy with that, when I asked him last week, he says,
Speaker 22He's smarter than us.
Speaker 2Yeah, he said, well, if there's two or three champions, then we'd probably think about it, but we're not going to run away from the one horse, because there's a lot that could go wrong.
Speaker 22That's fair. I say it every week, and that's not being any disrespectful to car-ying rising, but.
Speaker 23Morning, Gareth. So three-year-olds have a good, good. Pretty good record. Record, I mean. Tempted last year. Tempted.
Speaker 25Yeah, yeah, yeah. There's a few others. Yes, yes, yes. Yes, yes, yes, of course, yeah.
Speaker 2Morning, Gareth. I thought the Moyer was outstanding, but can you ask Wayne how the crowd was? It's from Graham. I didn't go. No, it was around two and a half, 3,000 there.
Speaker 22No, I didn't go on Saturday.
Speaker 2Morning, boys. Once again, a brilliant ride by Jamie Mott. If he could ride at 53, he would be in the top five riders in the country. He's an outstanding jockey. That's Griffo from Glenroy. How do you think Storm Boy will go at start?
Speaker 22I thought Storm Boy was the best two-year-old I've seen in the last five years. I don't think I've seen a better two-year-old in recent times. He was such a good horse that never won a group one. So at the end of the day, it's about his sperm at start. It's actually not about his race performance anymore. So it's whether he's literally got the goods or he doesn't have. Yeah. The difference. The difference is when you win the big races, you get the better quality mares. So that obviously does, certainly does help you. But so many good stallions have come, have come, literally come from nothing.
Speaker 2Yeah. Nice egg, you blokes are. Nice eggs, you blokes are. Well, we know that. We'll kick She's Alibi's head in. You're going to look silly. She was only 80% fit yesterday. Good luck beating her. That's from someone from New Zealand. So Delius is the danger. It's just whether it's too short the distance first up. She's Alibi seems way too short. Bookie's leaving no meat on the bone. Octagonal raced in the Guineas and Derby. Hitotsu went straight from the Guineas to Derby and won. It's not a one or the other situation. You can run in both, Wayne.
Speaker 22Octagonal was 30 years ago. And Octagonal was the class of 1992. And they were the best crop of horses that we have ever seen as a collective in the modern era. So I get what you're trying to say, but that was so, so long ago. And Octagonal was by the... It was the freak stallion, Zabeel, and he was the great, great miler or two, two miler stallion, Zabeel. So once we lost him, we don't have another stallion that can go anywhere near as close as what Zabeel could do because he was winning derbies. He was winning Cox Plates, his progeny in Melbourne Cups, Caulfield Cups. Sky Heights won a Caulfield Cup, didn't he? Yeah, he did. So like Zabeel's progeny won everything. And as I said, you look at our other, our older races, they're all overseas horses that are running and competing and winning.
Speaker 2John O'Neill is so full of micro shares and giving every owner a chance. Ask him who gets the trophies when he wins the big races.
Speaker 22What you do.
Speaker 23So what happens there traditionally is Oz, myself, we hand them around. And then if you want to buy a copy trophy, you buy one.
Speaker 2Sometimes like, I think the Cox Plate or the Melbourne Cup, Australian Bloodstock, they just auctioned it off. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, they did that.
Speaker 22Didn't they do that with Kieran's Melbourne Cup winner two years ago?
Speaker 23Yeah, they did. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah, they did.
Speaker 22I think Mr. Werritt went and paid $800,000. Yeah, he paid a bit of money for it. And Mark Zara dropped the bloody thing. He dropped it. But that's good. He genuinely dropped it and it was bent.
Speaker 23That shows a little bit of fun has been had with it. Yeah, you need to like that.
Speaker 2I would have thought. It needs to have like a Steve, Steve Wars baggy green cap. Like it's, you can celebrate.
Speaker 22You can obviously go and get a replica. Yeah. So at the end of the day. And I think in most instances, that's what you do. Quite often what they do is they'll just put it out. The owners will say, whoever wants to pay the most for it can have it.
Speaker 2Yeah. Gareth, can you please check Wayne's temperature? Has it mentioned his father and only mentioned Chautauqua once on today's show? That's from Mark.
Speaker 22It was the Chautauqua Stakes last Saturday that was transferred to Wednesday, you womble.
Speaker 2Yeah. Does Wayne think he's, Wayne doesn't mention John as much as Johnny mentions Kieran. Oh, stop it.
Speaker 18Stop it. Don't believe on it. Who said that?
Speaker 2Does, does, does Wayne think he's unraced horse, March, a naval fleet of potential group one horses?
Speaker 22Well, they're, they're, they're about to race. That's obviously. That's obviously a client. There's no, no doubt about that. No doubt about that. No, I don't think so with group one. I wish, I wish, but the truth is you, you'll be right more times than what you're wrong, but there's not many that are group one class.
Speaker 2We have raced horses through syndicates, but in the end, management fees cost too much. We now buy into horses from one to 5% through a range of stables. We have a great time and meet great people. That's from Mark from Camberwell.
Speaker 23I think it provides a good opportunity no matter what you want to do that, right?
Speaker 22Coming in a low base and not putting in a lot of money, it's, it's fan money. If you've got, if you've got $400 to go into a share and all this and say, I own that.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 22God, you want, you want to get someone going on about, about my racehorse? Go downstairs and ask one Geraldo Waitley. He talks about how his father, how, how his father just goes berserk because he's in, he's in some, uh, my racehorse syndication. So what, whatever, whatever pecking order you have, I don't think you're going to worry about it, Johnny buying a little share, but, um, look, I think, look, any, I think if,
Speaker 23if there's an opportunity for people to get in. Good for the game. And enjoy the fun that is created, not only on race day, but. It's the best fun you can have with your clothes on, Johnny. Build up, it's unbelievable. I think.
Speaker 2I can't believe like Harness Racing Victoria or even GRV and those other, and the other codes haven't gone down the micro share path. The sprinters in Australia, if Kira Mark can do it, surely those bodies can do it. The sprinters in Australia, well known on a well down on years gone by. Oh, that's right. They are in Hong Kong. Um, what's piggybacks main aim boys? I don't know. Um, we'll have to chase that with Kira. And the last one is high time. Hi guys. First time, text a long time. Listen, how about another spring preview session? A couple of weeks since your first one, much clearer picture. Now, surely that's from beefy. When are we going to do that? I reckon do it next week. We could do it tomorrow, but next week. So we'll get Gator and the team ready to go. It's something for the battlers. You've been both in really good form.
Speaker 22Race two at the Kenzo on Wednesday. I did tip beaches a couple of weeks ago. I got back to last and, uh, from a crappy barrier, but I didn't know what barrier it was going to have until, uh, until we went a Thursday for Saturday. But, uh, beaches drawn one of nine race to 1550 Canterbury. So she goes pretty good beaches.
Speaker 23I think there's a nice horse going around in Sydney Saturday called Mr. Miller. He'll step up in the grade. Yeah. As you're racing him, he'll step up in grade second week. He'll step up in grade again, and he's got a win to, uh, get in. To the apps are qualified to get into the Epson, but he's going quite well. And Kieran's, uh, sorry, Chris Wallace managed him very well. And I know Ozzie's up and about. So, um, yeah, let's, let's hope he can get the job done.
Speaker 2Lee, I forgot to ask you this. I should have asked you, but crew's away. Did he disappoint you on Saturday?
Speaker 23Well, he was six weeks between runs, you know, like he got, he had that blood in his nostril that we don't really know where it came from. Um, as we discussed, then he missed out in the benchmark. 84 got scratched in the morning. They gave him a little soft jump out. Ethan said he went terrific. He just blew out the last hundred. So we'll probably find a, a 1,484 in a couple of weeks. Um, maybe Underwood stakes day. Uh, this is 78 the same day in, uh, in Sydney. So we'll have, we'll have a look at that and then he'll probably have a break. Any from the future's perspective? Look, I really think Zaran's a horse that's going to progress well. So I'd be watching it. I think leading into the Caulfield cup and, and the Melbourne cup, I think it will step up and be quite competitive. And I think St. George will be. Really competitive in the Caulfield cup.
Speaker 2So nothing you bought overseas.
Speaker 23Well, that point of law doesn't, hasn't arrived yet. Obviously it's a nice horse, so we'll, we'll see how it goes, but it'll run first up in the Caulfield cup. James J here, Braddock. Uh, I'm actually not in here. Oh, you're not in that one? No, I'm not in him, but, um, I think he's having, most of the boys are in him. I think he's having another run. He's been gelded. Leopardstown, I think. He's been gelded since the, the lead up in the, uh, I think it was the Irish Derby he ran in. So he'll, um, he's a nice horse. He'll run. He'll run, he'll run Leopardstown and then come over for the cup, I would have thought.
Speaker 22It's been a good show. And you know what the best part was? You and I did not make the oh no, because last week we dropped the bomb that, uh, Gareth was getting married. And I thought I was going to be in a world of hurt with Gareth's fiance. It's true. And I got zero back, so that's a massive win for me.
Speaker 23Do you know what? I got a nice text saying, thank you. What from? From, from, well, Demi and I, you know, we text a bit, you know, do you?
Speaker 25Oh, you're not supposed to say that.
Speaker 2Hey, Johnny. Not now. She's a boy. There's a lot of people coming, texting through your hair. What do you want? What hair? No, they said there's a, like, you reckon you could shave it?
Speaker 23No, I'm not shaving it. I won't be shaving it. it. No chance. No chance. No chance. Give us a spell. There is a bit of a problem there. I can see that. I'm hanging on as much as I can. Have a wonderful day, boys. We'll catch up with you next week. See you guys. I'm heading off to Turkey.
Speaker 2You are a turkey. Tommy Morris was downstairs. Maybe you could share some notes with him. Thank you. Have a great day. See you, mate. Bye. Don't go anywhere if you're watching us on Racing.com or listening to us here on Giddy Up this morning on SCN Track, SCN Turf, RSN 927. We're going to break down Belmont next with Pete Anthonis.
Speaker 1Join the conversation. Text us on 0499 736 736 Live across Australia. This is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall. It's now time for the Monday Breakdown with Pete Anthonis.
Speaker 2Welcome back to Giddy Up. Time to break down what happened there at Belmont on Saturday. There was also a good meeting at Kalgoorlie yesterday. You can tune in to Racing WA TV on 7plusandracing.com. The ultimate destination for everything racing in the West. Pete Anthonis, hello to you.
Speaker 26Morning to you, Gareth. Morning to everyone at home.
Speaker 2How did you think that track played there on Saturday at Belmont?
Speaker 26Look, it seemed they were angling away from the inside so horses were trying to find the middle part of the track. So I'm looking for horses that settled on the inside that perhaps didn't have the best of things. We might touch on one of those as a horse to follow. Might have missed a start by one link after being favourite in the race. That I might have supported. But anyway, we'll get to that. Just a bit of racing luck is required sometimes, isn't it, G? Also might have had something on Double the Fun, who I feel for Tash Faithfull, but the rain being fumbled over the last 100 metres or so and getting nailed on a line by Yes I Know. Anyway, it happens. We move on.
Speaker 2Nicky Motoe is one of those horses you're talking about?
Speaker 26Yeah, exactly. If you told me Nicky Motoe had settled last offence and was still reeling off, you know, pretty decent splits for a leader and, look, made up some really significant ground there in the straight. Probably, if Nicky Motoe leads that race, ends up winning if she's running those splits. But yeah, we'll just put her in the black book for next time out and see how she draws. But look, it's just, it was a race day where, you know, there's some really good performances. I think, I think it's, you'd be remiss of me not to touch on Tudati, who just seems to keep winning races. Justin Erklund has got this horse absolutely flying. And the fact they've been able to put him a little bit more into races of late, I think has really helped him just be able to use that turn of foot he has over the last 600 metres. Just to pick up some of these fields. So, he's won three on the bounce now. He's had a really good preparation.
Speaker 2Truly loyal. SP $2.40. Bet it was a very good win for this galloper. It was a big weekend, in fact, for the Saracen White.
Speaker 26Yeah, it really was opportunistic. Obviously, you touched on winning there at Kalgoorlie yesterday, and that horse with the Jester Sun really cleared out from the rest of the field. But as you said, truly loyal. Just going off the numbers, we still don't know where this horse sits. So, I'm looking forward to seeing how this horse sits in the scheme of things. Only seen slow tempo races. But he just seems to be able to pick him up and put him away quickly. And that's always a really good sign that the horse has got something underneath the bonnet. So, look, we just keep basically finding races for where truly loyal settles up next time out. I don't think we'll get a price there. We were a little bit generous there late in terms of the market. If you liked him early days, you actually got rewarded with the prices on the market. But look, perhaps a few of the horses behind him, talking of God's Gate, didn't really have the best of things after settling leaders back, which I wouldn't have been able to have picked during the form. But yeah, and look, Minefield does obviously really good market support for that horse late as well, and was three back the fence, and loomed to make some good ground there late. So, perhaps there's a few there that might improve next time out if they can find the right map again.
Speaker 2And a cheerio to my old mate, Hard Sol Agis. He's a grand old campaigner, isn't he? Fast man. He runs another place in the racing there in town. So, in other performances there, yes, well on to our man Spud now. Mark Hunter can give it to his mate, but he tipped us two winners there on the weekend. He was keyed on, yes, I know, for the Informed Genjimi Camp and Search and Times. Both SP'd around 380 and 320. So, they were impressive. What did you make out of races five and six there on Saturday at Belmont, Pete? Well, yeah, just touched
Speaker 26on, yes, I know, this horse has just been absolutely flying. I think we've said this a few times, but again, Gemi's have just got this horse going really well. Former Freedman horse in Victoria, and look, they've settled back a few times, but was able to hold a position there from Barrier 4 there on the weekend, and that just made the world of difference. I've already touched on the runner up in Double the Fun, who was really good, and it's just absolutely going great guns for Sharon Miller's team, and they gapped third. So, I think that's a really good indication that those two horses are just in really good form at the moment. And going to race six, well, look, Search and Times, going back through my notes pre-race, and even just refining the form there on Friday, and last three starts of Search and Times completely not suited whatsoever. And if you just go back to some of the figures that horse was able to post last preparation, you could mark this horse really quite short. So, look, in the end, has held off Silent Diva. Refemno Angels held on for third. I almost expected there would have been a little bit more margin between a few of these, just in terms of the overall performances that I'd seen previously. But again, slow tempo races, gee, you often see these bunched finishes, and it often comes down to getting the split at the right time. But if I was saying horses away from the inside were getting the best of things, well, look, Search and Times and Silent Diva, they settled rails in runs. So, I will be giving them a little bit of an extra bonus going into their next starts.
Speaker 2And in the Coolgarded Cup, Opportunistic, he won, he was a short prize favourite. The jest of some made him work for it. And Levalier, the former Cadoffin horse, that was his best run, I would say, was a lovely way to finish third. Gingerbaker, who was scratched there from the finally, and saved for the Coolgarded Cup, was fourth there yesterday.
Speaker 26Yeah, and look, this was a race where just it seemed like a lot of the horses on the turn were just battling. So, it was just a case of, well, Opportunistic's clearly going the best of all these runners. It was just basically biding his time. Once he got the clean run with Willy Pike on board, it was just a matter of how far, except the horse, as you mentioned, Gee, the Jester's son, who again, has been another horse, has been in great form this preparation, and ran right up to that mark. Again, huge gap to third. Gingerbaker, you touched on, probably just is on track for their grand final. I think that's the only way to put it. So, he's on track. He got well and truly too far back in that field, but we're just waiting for him for the Calgoorlie round, I'd be
Speaker 2saying. Bigsy makes a good point for the simply sensational performance of the week. G'day, Gareth. A big shout out to Justine Erklund's getting too darty, fit and firing after so many setbacks. He keeps getting underrated by your WA form experts. Haven't heard his name mentioned once for his three wins, even though his sectionals are sharp. There you go, Pete. I think you've mentioned too darty before. I think I had him as my
Speaker 26best bet. You did, yes. So, going back early this preparation, and yeah, I mean, look, it's it's a matter of fact, like, you know, we do the form on a Thursday for a Friday. We get markets that change violently there on a Saturday, and that's not making excuses, but that's just actually being, you know, that's what it takes to be a professional in this field. So, you know, like, we get 30 seconds to talk about some of these races, and you can't talk about all of them. But anyway, I can't disagree with that comment. Yes. He's going great guns. I've already said that
Speaker 16today. Horses. Horses. Horses to follow, Pete. Uh, Nicky Motor.
Speaker 26That is it for me, G, at this early stage. I'll be going through a few more replays, but it's just a little bit of caution, I think, on a few of these runners at the moment. We're seeing some big spike performances. I think the data there suggests that the track was pretty slick there in the straight there on the weekend. So, I just need to go back and
Speaker 2do a little bit of homework there. Good on you, Pete. Thanks for that, mate. Cheers, Gareth. Check out racingqueensland.com.au for where Queensland is racing today. Chris Nelson breaks down this Eagle Farm meeting. G'day, Chris-o. Good morning, Gareth. Good morning to everyone. Do you know what summed up Eagle Farm for me on Saturday? Girls? Females? No. Yeah, well, they were very good. Um. Yes. But the last race, this is from a punning perspective, the last race. Oh, um, what? Don't tell me you back Malayne. No, we're on the second horse, but how can Malayne, like, please?
Speaker 27How could it win? Yeah. It's never shown any pace, I don't think, in its life. No. And it's up sitting outside Hell. Yeah. Um, who was all set to get a a soft lead and probably get every
Speaker 2chance, but I don't know. And then listening to T Golem, I thought, geez, we might have found one in King, uh, King Capper here at the weights. Yeah. SP nine dollars. We get, we beat Hell. Um, and then Malayne wins. It's unbelievable, really. Forty-one dollars at SP. So, there you go. Yeah. As well,
Speaker 27you go on. He does. He's a hard horse to catch Malayne and uh I think I read in the stewards report. They said they'll they'll be expecting to ride him forward again going forward in his races. So, we will see what happens over the next few runs but yeah, it's uh forty-one dollar shot. I think he knocked Sammy out of the quaddie too on Saturday. It would have been great listening. It was great listening. At least it wasn't tags. It would have been even even worse. Alright, then horses
Speaker 2to follow from Eagle Farm and well done to the girls. They. Yeah. And it was uh like um obviously Mark Du Plessis won the first but then Emily Lang won the second. Um Talia Fenland won the third and then you had Anna Roper the fourth. Emily Posman um the Victorian Apprentice won the fifth and then Bella Youngberry. Uh she's going to be a star. Um yeah. It was a great ride on that precise star. Inside Barry got off the fence when she needed to. Yes. Anna Roper sensational. She gets a double and then CJ Graham wins on Kintyre and Anna Roper wins again on Fire Bomber. Um yes.
Speaker 27Yeah. She rode three and and and you're spot on about Bella with that ride on. Yeah. precise start. She was behind the leader and the opportunity came early in the race to get off the fence and she did and that made all the difference because they avoided that fence section, which they often do when the rail's in a close position at Eagle Pole. I don't know why but it just happens all the time. Three to Anna Roper. She's on loan to Tony Golan for three months and if you didn't know that, which you probably do anyway, and Emily Posman's with Kelly Schweder over the spring so we'll see her for a while as well. Four winners to Tony Golan, two to Kevin Kemp and I thought the highlight of the day was Precise Star but you're asking me for Black Bookers. I'm going to go race three. Bon Riviere. Now I did tip this one. I thought he ran a good race. He's only lightly raced. He might go for a break now but he didn't have a lot go his way yet he was still sticking on well there, right to the line and ran a good fourth. So I'm with him. Bon Riviere. Maybe if he's got another run this prep. If not, we'll follow him next time in. The race after that, race number four, 1200 minutes. Now I did tip this horse, Exuberance. One of Tony Golan's I thought could improve. She did. She ran fourth. She ran a good fourth at $13 and she too was trapped wide all the way. I'd say if she wasn't wide, she would have been right in the finish. She was only beating 1.7 lengths on the line. So follow those two and another one from the Golan. Now he's just got it covered up here at the moment. Race five, Hot Majesty was going 1350 to 1800 metres. He's a real one pacer. I think 2000 metres next time out he should be ready to go, Hot Majesty.
Speaker 2Perfect, mate. We appreciate your time Chris. So Pembrey, Tony Golan's tweeted out today or put on his social media platforms that she'll have a bit of a break. Well, not a break, but she'll miss the rest of the Sydney Spring and be aimed up at the Coolmore in Melbourne.
Speaker 27Okay. Well, that's probably a good idea. She just didn't perform up to her best on Saturday. That's for sure. Different horse this time around.
Speaker 2Yes. All right then, Chris. Thanks for that, mate. Thanks, Gareth. Cheers. There you go. There's Chris Nelson. We're going to break down what happened there at Morvenville with Heath Pope next.

I'm just having a look now at the price that we're getting. The boost horse, it'll be around $3.50. I can't see it at the moment. Is it up yet, the boost horse? I'll just double check it. So I'll find that out with Louis. But Sam Lyons joins us now because he's done the form for us at Tatura. It's been a long time since we've had a chat to Sam. G'day, Sam.
Speaker 29Yeah, how are you, mate? Yeah, it's good to be back in the chair today. I've been off in Europe for five weeks, so. - And how was it? Yeah, it was great. It was hot. It was very hot, particularly through Italy. I reckon I've sweat that much since that police dog sat down next to me at the big day out. But it was a good time.
Speaker 2Of the view was the horse we're talking about. We're getting $4 of the view. So that's race four, number five for Patrick Payne. Well, I'm glad you had a good time over there, mate. You'll be ready to go. How do we make some money at Tatura today?
Speaker 29Well, it's been tightened up a little bit, the markets today. But let's find a couple. I don't mind race six, number two, Road Warrior. This is one where I actually went out of touch from the price yesterday. This is my best bet. It was $2.05 yesterday. I think we're getting around $2.15 today. Danny O'Brien's horse here, nice and deep into a prep. It's a big drop in class. I'm not 100% sure of the heavy eights. It's best ground. It's been quite solid over that trip in some better races than this recently. And last time out in particular at Morfaville Park behind Nickish, it was unlucky not to be winning. Went off 360 that day. Just got held up a little bit. Up the fence. Didn't quite get clear until late. And it was making good ground over the $15.69. So the $1,600 here, deep into a prep, down in class. Billy Egan in the saddle. It should be winning. I don't love anything to beat it in that race. I think something would need to jump out of the ground. And I think the $2.15, it's the best bet of the day. Race number six, number two is the way to go.
Speaker 2Yep, $2.10 now there with bet $3.65. What else have you got for us, mate?
Speaker 29I had a pair of horses that I liked. Well, I called them my best values. Both $12 yesterday, and they're both significantly shorter today. We'll look at race one, number 16, Bordeaux. Now, this horse got a start for the Tony and Calvin McEvoy yard. It had two runs last preparation. It was disappointing, yes, but it had excuses in two runs off the back of a couple of trials. Seen the good old from colours. Trolled up really nicely this time in. A couple of key gear changes, including being gelded. I think we can forgive what we saw last prep and suggest that with the gelding, it's going to come on. Drawn really well in barrier four. You could get $12 yesterday. I think there's $0.20 of deductions, into about $5.50. I think sort of $6 is about that right price, if you can get that. A number of chances did come out. But yeah, number one, race one, number 16, Bordeaux, is a nice little each-way play, if you can get that each-way price.
Speaker 2And you've got the best value coming up, race five, number nine, Castor Starr there.
Speaker 29Yep, Castor Starr from the Warren yard. First up, I think we can forgive last preparation a little bit for this horse. It just didn't quite come up to its best, but its best form, absolutely. Stacks up to a race like this. It's another one where there's a few deductions, but not enough to suggest the $12 into the $4 is purely deductions. There's been good money for the horse. You're well into probably the right price now. It gets a couple of gear changes here. First up's had a stack of jump outs leading into this. It'll be a rock hard fit for the 14.50. I think it's arguably the best horse in this grade. It's got to beat Ornos, who is a Danny O'Brien horse, who brings some really good city form in, but it just doesn't win out of turn. So. I think Kasten Star is the horse that you have to have on top. Again, I would have loved the each way price to have stuck today, but the market's found it a little bit this morning, but I still think it's a horse to beat.
Speaker 2Any quality, mate?
Speaker 29Yeah, I've got that in front of me today, mate. Leg one, race five, two, five, nine, 10, 11. Race two, we're going to go one out on the best of the day, Rogue Warrior, number two. Leg three, race seven, one, four, seven, eight. And leg four, race eight, one, two, four, six, nine, 11. So two, five, nine, 10, 11. One out on two. One, four, seven, eight. And then one, two, four, six, nine, 11, G-Man.
Speaker 2Beautiful, mate. Thanks for that. We appreciate it, Tom. As always, Sammy, good luck today and welcome back.
Speaker 29Much love, brother.
Speaker 2See you. There's Sammy Lyons. Luke Hovenestian at Grafton likes race three, number three, Righteous. And race six, number four, Vendimia. So race three, number three, race six, number four at Grafton. He likes a couple at Dubbo. Awesome. Race five, number eight. And race six, number five, Lone Star Dream. You can head to thetrots.com.au for expert harness racing tips. And in-depth analysis for all major Victorian meetings. I thought we'd have the Michael Jordan music coming in here, but he's back, Darren Carroll. I don't know where he's been, but he's been away for a long time. He deserved a well-earned break, but I think the punters are happy that he's back. G'day, Darren.
Speaker 30G'day, Gav. Yeah, I think it was planned for four weeks and I stayed away for 10.
Speaker 2Yeah, there you go.
Speaker 30Yeah, no, it was a great time, and it is good to be back.
Speaker 2What'd you make of the semifinal night of the Vic bred there Saturday night, and also the heats for the trotters on Friday night? There was some interesting results. Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 30I mean, Emma Stewart clearly had a domination on Saturday night, but probably not as dominant as what she has previous years as far as the way the horses went. So the barrage was going to be really interesting on Saturday night, but they hold the aces, no doubt. But yeah, I think it was a really good night's racing, and we'll get a very competitive night next Saturday night.
Speaker 16What about today, mate? How do we make some money?
Speaker 30Yeah, I thought we'd start off in race two, number six, Gillaby Illusion. It's a dollar 85 at the moment. I think we'll get black figures. Trained by Steve O'Donoghue, Ryan Sanderson drives this time, and Ryan hasn't driven this one for a little while, and had a break and then went to Wagga a couple of weeks ago and was back near the tail of the field and finished off really strongly on the fence, and I think it's really well graded today, so keen on it. And the other one I'd like to talk to you about. Yeah. The other one of mine is not of a bit of value, I think, in the last, and it's probably gone a little bit now, but race nine, number four, My Lola Rock. Luke Sullivan's done a really good job with this horse since he got it from interstate. He's had three runs. All of them have been very good. I think the distance will suit it, and it looks like a little bit of tempo early. He'll be driven with one run, so expect to be hitting one really hard late, and it's probably the better bet of the day, My Lola Rock in the last.
Speaker 16Beautiful. What price are we getting from this? From My Lola Rock?
Speaker 30Currently $320. I bet $7 early this morning, Gareth, but I think it'll get out to about $4 or $5.
Speaker 2Beautiful. That's your best. That'll do us. You'll be hard to beat, I reckon, off a freshen up as well. You're always hard to beat. Sorry, Gareth? I said you'll be hard to beat off a freshen up as well. You're always hard to beat, but with a clear mind, Hawthorne one on Thursday night, you'll be up and about. Definitely. Now, I've got one for you. Tomorrow night, Port Pirie, the 8th of September, horse draw nine, by the name of Insider Trading, first up for Tyson Link.
Speaker 30This is the giddy-up slot race. Yes. Why is it over there, Gareth?
Speaker 2Because we're there. It's representing us in the slot race. So it had to be over there a few weeks back. They have to be trained by a South Australian trainer for the last, I think, for 10 weeks leading up to this slot race in October. So yeah, we did the deal with the McNulty's, Tyson Link, we sent it over there to him. Hopefully, it wins on Tuesday. We might be in trouble if it doesn't win on Tuesday, but hopefully, we've got it. Preferential barrier draw.
Speaker 30Correct. Yeah.
Speaker 2No, random.
Speaker 31Random barrier draw.
Speaker 2Everything's random. Yep.
Speaker 31100% they're random. You can't have a final random. I think it's all random. Yeah. So it doesn't matter if you win a few races leading up to it?
Speaker 2No. We're an NR59, so gain some confidence.
Speaker 30Yeah. I mean, he's a quality horse. Went over there. He's a last starty. He went over the 1,200 meters at Melton, but I think it's a very shrewd move by you, Gareth. Yeah. I quite like it. And your record in these slot races is second to none.
Speaker 2So hopefully, we can get the chocolates there. As always, Daz, it's a pleasure, mate. Welcome back.
Speaker 31Thanks, Gareth.
Speaker 2There's Downing Carroll there. It's 11:43. We're going to finish up the show on this Monday morning here on Giddy Up. Just before I go to a break, I've got a few more tips for you, so don't go anywhere. Harness Racing, New South Wales, the home of the Carnival of Cups for Australian Music Royalty. It meets quality Harness Racing action. Michael Dumsney likes at Goulburn today. Satellite Simba, race four, number two, and race eight, number one, Raging Sea, each way. So four, two, eight, one. And the King, Glenn Moore, he likes Sweet Robbie, race two, number 11, race three, number seven, Grace Alla, and race eight, number nine, Blame It On The Night at Pinjarra Trots today. So race two, number 11, race three, number seven, and race eight, number nine. The tips there from Glenn Moore. That is Bag of Tips, thanks to Oz Equipment Rentals, Bet365, and also the Mighty Ultimate Hotel. We're going to take a break, and then joining me straight after that will be Jane Ivell to look back at a big weekend of racing in New Zealand.

Speaker 32CSU, Giddy Up. He comes now, Wellritten up on the outside, Tardelli out wider on the track then, Stirling Express, and she's a dealer. Wellritten comes to Alabama, Aless on the inside, Alabama Aless. Wellritten gets her at the 100, and she draws away. Wellritten makes a seamless progression from Princess of the Turf to Queen of the Turf.
Speaker 2Yeah, Wellritten takes out the first group one of the season, New Zealand, the Prasie Plate, and you can wake up in New Zealand racing, kick your day off with a Kiwi bet. What's gambling really costing you? For free and confidentiality. For free and confidential support, visit gamblinghelponline.org.au. Jane Ivell joins us now. G'day, Jane. Thanks for your time. It's been interesting reading the Gareth Orson Hound text line, talking to a few of our experts regarding the performance of Wellritten. Some say she was very impressive and there's improvement in her, and look out for the spring in Sydney, and others say she didn't beat much. I think Alabama Express goes pretty well, but she'll have her work cut out when she comes to Australia. Leah, what's your take on her performance first up, Jane?
Speaker 33I thought her run was particularly good first up. She's obviously done really well in between her three-year-old and four-year-old campaign. She looks a lot stronger. She paraded a lot better in terms of her temperament. She used to get herself really wound up prior to a race. I thought she was very relaxed for her, particularly fresh up at Ellerslie on Saturday. And I just know from watching Stephen Marsh's horses in the yard that they always improve. He never sends his horses to the races first up, screwed down. So there's definitely some improvement in her. They run the race along fairly quickly early. Media World, the stable mate, led and was quite aggressive to find that winning position, that leading position. To get out of the barriers quicker than Alabama Lassen to lead, you've got to be going pretty fast because she's quick. So, you know, they ran the race at a good tempo. She had the perfect run in transit, to be fair to her. Alabama Lassen sort of hit the front halfway down the straight and Matt Cartwright sort of worked her up alongside Alabama Lassen. And then when he really asked her to, she extended. She's a winner. She's won seven from seven. Do I think she can come to Australia and stack up? I think that she's the best chance we've had of a New Zealand horse in a long time and being able to do that. I don't think she beat nothing. I've read a lot of that on Twitter as well. I mean. Alabama Lassen's won at listed level up the straight at Flemington. She's also run second in Amoya, pretty narrowly beaten as well. So, I mean, that's group one form in Australia. I know Media World's only won at group three level, but I think she'll improve. And look, the markets suggest she can go pretty close in an Epsom.
Speaker 2Well, she's a strong favourite for the Epsom with Bet365. Well, Rhys, and I just think it's good that, as I said before, on many occasions now, that racing in this country, in Australasia, it's so much better. It doesn't matter if it's harness racing or thoroughbred racing. When you've got superstars from both sides of the Tasman, Jane, especially for our carnivals here in Australia, when you've got a superstar Kiwi, it does make the game better.
Speaker 33Of course it does. And, you know, it increases your global audience as well, doesn't it? And I think what's really exciting about her is that she can't do any more in New Zealand. To be able to make that step up to wait for age and beat the horses that she beat at Ellerslie on Saturday, they're not much better than that in New Zealand. So I think to see how good she really is, they have to come across to Australia and take on the Australian Gallopers. Look, I know we've got some superstars going around at the moment with the Autumn Glow and She's an Alibi. We're not going to see them face her in an Epsom. I think she's going to be incredibly competitive in an Epsom. And I'm excited. I'm excited to see how she goes in a Golden Eagle. Like Connections, Yulong, they need to find out how good she really is. If they don't come over and they don't compete, you'll never know. So it's exciting and it gives us something to look forward to and something to talk about. And it's a great way to continue to promote racing. I mean, racing needs horses like her. New Zealand has needed a horse like her. So I'm really looking forward to the next couple of months.
Speaker 2Yeah, I hope she runs some mighty races in Australia. Steve Marsh, he's a great bloke as well, isn't he, Jane? Like he's a terrific ambassador for the game. He talks so well. And it'll be great to see him come out to Australia with, well, retinence. She was, what, named Horse of the Year and also Three-Year-Old of the Year there on the weekend, which was no real surprise. But that's a mighty job to do that as a three-year-old to win Horse of the Year.
Speaker 33Huge job to win Horse of the Year as a three-year-old. We don't often see it happen in New Zealand. But I guess her record over the season speaks for itself. I'm not always a huge fan. I'm seeing a three-year-old win Horse of the Year when they haven't proven themselves at weight for her age. But, look, she did that pretty convincingly on Saturday. So, look, great result for those that were involved in her great night last night in Auckland for the Horse of the Year Awards. And as you mentioned, she was Crown New Zealand Horse of the Year and Three-Year-Old of the Year. And there's some nice results, of course. I hope he wins Stayer of the Year, Lara Antipova, Two-Year-Old of the Year. And we've seen her step out in a causette here already. So, yeah, some nice results all around. And, look, you mentioned Stephen Marsh Stable. There's no doubt, as a trainer, he has just gone from strength to strength. He just gets better every season. And I know I've mentioned it before. The team have got a few things they need to work on for him to challenge Tiakao in terms of New Zealand premierships. But, look, he has sort of been the up-and-coming trainer in New Zealand for a long time. And I think it speaks volumes that he continues to produce great records and even better records. Year on year.
Speaker 2Geez, Lance O'Sullivan and Andrew Scott can find a filly, can't they?
Speaker 33Yeah, they can. They've done a really good job in sort of the last, I don't know, sort of five to seven years in New Zealand. I know for a long time people just thought they were a stable that fed to Paul O'Sullivan in Hong Kong. And we probably didn't see them having the results that they've had in New Zealand. But they're another stable that's been on the rise. And they select really nice horses at the yearling sales. And those horses then go on and put... I mean, Y-TAC was one of the eye-catchers in the Group 1. The Poiseuille played. He's certainly a horse to keep an eye on going into the next Group 1 in the Howden Mile. But Pounce was a filly that they lined up in the Sunline Vars. She got an exceptional run in transit, beautifully ridden by Craig Grylls. And she actually won the race quite convincingly in the end. The stable mate in Dashing Dixie was the eye-catcher of the race. She was massive through the line. And so O'Sullivan and Scott's team have got two really... Two really nice fillies going into, I guess, the New Zealand Bloodstock Filly of the Year Series. And there's plenty of opportunity over the next couple of months in New Zealand. Nominated for both the 1000 and 2000 Guineas. And bred by Cambridge Stud by their siren, Elman Zor. So she's just going to get better, I think, as she gets up over a bit further.
Speaker 2And speaking of Elman Zor, he produced Asturia for Tiako Racing to win that first race at Ellerslie on Saturday.
Speaker 33Yeah, they had a great day, Cambridge Stud in terms of... In terms of results there at Ellerslie, Asturia, she trialled up really well prior to her debut. But in the words of the stable, they'd thrown her in the deep end because it was a strong three-year-old 1200 metre event. She actually jumped quite well, but then got a check not long after the start. So it was sort of back second to last on the fence. Michael McNabb did not panic at any stage in the race. And luckily for him, the inside opened right up and she got a beautiful run up the rail and won the race quite well. Michael McNabb did not panic at any stage in the race.
