Giddy Up Full Show (05/11/26)

This episode of SEN's "Giddy Up with Gareth Hall," aired on Oaks Day, Thursday 5 November, previewed three major race meetings: Flemington's Oaks Day card, Saturday's Champions Day at Flemington, and Five Diamonds Day at Rose Hill in Sydney. Host Gareth Hall spoke with a series of trainers and racing figures to find winners and analyse key chances across the carnival. Joseph O'Brien's racing manager Kevin Blake opened the show, reflecting on Melbourne Cup Day and confirming that James J. Braddock and Omni Man will stay in Australia under Chris Waller. He praised Point of Law's dominant Cup victory and discussed the prospects of Defiantly and Omni Man on Saturday. Trainer Sam Freedman then assessed his team, including Inkaruna, Tom Kitten, Point Barrow, and Belmont Gangster, while flagging concerns about wet-track conditions. John O'Shea and Michael Kent Jr. provided detailed updates on their respective stables, covering runners such as Polymnia, King Pedro, Linebacker, Chiringuita, and Sir Barge. J.D. Hayes and David Payne followed, with Payne expressing confidence in unbeaten Oaks favourite Proxima Diva despite a wide barrier. David Gately closed the program with his game plan, naming Sequin his best bet on Oaks Day and Tempted his top selection for Champions Day, while also tipping Welcome to the Show in the Five Diamonds. The show also touched on John Kanga's VRC board nomination and promoted Bet365's free six-horse challenge.

Speaker 1now on giddy up it's time for stable mail
Speaker 2joseph o'brien's got a couple of big chances engaged there on saturday he's racing manager and a great friend of ours here on giddy up is kevin blake and he joins us to kick off the show kevin hello to you mates hey garrett how's things i'm well how have you recovered from melbourne cup day and the build up there and um what did you make of it that
Speaker 3was brilliant it was a great day great day um recovered well yeah back at it we'll go back racing today and uh back racing on saturday and then away away and gone on sunday yep um so i look it's been a brilliant trip it's flowing along and um yes your cup day was everything we hoped it would be except the result so it was a
Speaker 2great day and and so has it lived up to your expectations the spring carnival
Speaker 3yeah you know sure look i've been listening to everyone talk about it for for so long it's great experience it and it's um yeah you know like we we came out early and um it's just it's just been it's been wild just how full you know that the two and a half weeks has been you know god you you guys you guys put on a fair show and um it's you know the the the plan was to come out early say yes to everything and keep going and you know jesus it's been busy but it's been it's been great it's been really good
Speaker 2and all the horses put up okay after the cup
Speaker 3yeah look at that you know they had their races you know um but they've all come back well um you know a couple going in different directions obviously now um james j braddock and um omni man who we'll see on saturday um we'll both stay with chris waller okay um i think um i i think goody two shoes that that's probably her yeah um that's probably her racing day is finished now um group two winner she's going to be a wonderful broodmare for jp and that's to be confirmed now but i expect that to be the case and um yeah the rest will be coming home oh sorry small fry is going to stay put as well okay um he's going to run he's staying in worby for the time being he's going to run in um he's going to run a sand down next week and um and he will he will stay put after that and um and yeah the rest will be we'll be preparing to come home um you know i can't recall the exact travel details but um in the near future so small fry do you know who trains him after joseph oh lord i i i can't recall your friend your friend terry henderson will fill you in i'm sure not
Speaker 2james j braddock so he's staying in australia i know that ozzy was um thinking about um what he does with james j braddock so there was options to go back with joseph or chris waller will be training so that's been confirmed now it sounds like yeah no we just
Speaker 3discussed it was all discussed yesterday and yeah um sure look obviously it goes without saying we love for him to come back to ireland but um it's it's there's a perfectly sensible case for him to stay here he'll have um he'll have a great set of options for for very lucrative prize money in what would be a you know i guess lesser races as you know that the middle this the middle distance division in in europe is a bit of a murderer's row compared to here um so that that makes loads of sense and um yeah looking forward to that journey continuing he's just been the horse of hopefully like many many more big days ahead for him
Speaker 2poor d mrs blake you'll be waking her up in the middle of the night these days with the alarm going off so you can watch james j braddock now in the early hours of the the morning they're back home
Speaker 3yeah yeah and i've never actually had um never had a piece of a horse that's been in training in australia so again i'll be all a new experience and um yeah look forward we go he's he ran a i thought he ran a brilliant race he was great with him yeah look at it we're with my with my optimistic hat on you know i think he shaped second best in the race um you know nothing in any circumstance was beating point of law yeah and he was he was exceptional and to do what he did from where he was in the run it was it was messy it wasn't the type of race um we wanted in terms of pace um but point of law would it would have been in a similar boat and he had the class and the talent to to overcome it and absolutely bolt up he was as a melbourne cup winner as i've seen um and yeah congrats to all his connections he was brilliant
Speaker 2yeah he was unbelievable wasn't he really point of law to run the sections he did at the end of two miles was an astonishing performance
Speaker 3he's he's a serious horse he really is and i love i'd love um i'd love in due course and i know kieran has mentioned that you know you'd love to see him come back to europe at some point and come have a crack um come have a crack at our guys in in our backlog and i think that would be that'd be a spectacle that'd be a real thrill i think for everyone maybe
Speaker 2suggesting an arc maybe one day i don't know but he likes firm grounds whether he'll get that in paris in october so yeah there's so many options and we all know that kieran is not frightened of a challenge so yeah like i don't
Speaker 3know if there'd be a if there'd be a really suitable option for him and ask us you know sorry royal ask it you know royal ask it lacks a a real mile a mile and a half marquee race you know um so the king george will let them work it out but it would be just just from a just from a racing fan's point of view it would um it'd be really cool to see him back um in europe having a crack you know it was
Speaker 2interesting i'm calvin mcavoy was pointing out that he was hearing that and i never got a chance to um really chat to joseph o'brien after the race but he he doesn't get frustrated too much joseph but the way that that race was run um it's fair to say that calvin was pointing out that um and i heard as well that he was a little frustrated with the way that that race was run there on tuesday yeah yeah
Speaker 3100 yeah yeah um but look how can you do with it you can't um you know you can make a plan but when you're not on their on their back you can't execute it you know
Speaker 2no um i think that was because obviously you thought kisly would go a little bit quicker or at least take up the field of royal supremacy is that is that yeah yeah that's it and look
Speaker 3yeah look and he and he looked a whole lot better than kisly and he looked a whole lot better than kisly and he looked a whole lot better than the horse didn't help himself he was slowly away horse didn't help himself he was slowly away horse didn't help himself he was slowly away yeah and um and that put him on the back foot yeah and um and that put him on the back foot yeah and um and that put him on the back foot um the hope would have been that with the cheek um the hope would have been that with the cheek um the hope would have been that with the cheek pieces on he would he would have pinged the pieces on he would he would have pinged the pieces on he would he would have pinged the gates a bit better and and made the thing a little bit smoother but look as we you know we said you know throughout the build-up you know fundamentally um you know the the the faster a race like that has run the the more it's going to help all of our horses because that's what they're that that's what they're trained for that's what if we if we have any sort of an edge in this neck of the woods it's it's stamina and um and that wasn't a race that tested stamina at the trip but um look this it's racing things always don't always go to plan and um look you you dust yourself down you reload and you you try again and then you try again but as
Speaker 2you said no one was beating point of law with the way that he went there on tuesday 100 if they went if they went
Speaker 3faster he might have won further you know he he's he's yeah couldn't my hat couldn't be more after him now it'd be
Speaker 2interesting to see how defiantly goes in the queen elizabeth stakes on saturday dylan brown mcgonigal takes the ride we all thought that he was going to be the horse that sets up a sizzling pace in a melbourne cup over the two miles do you think he's quick enough to win back to 2600 meters after he's been trained to win over two miles yeah sure
Speaker 3look we don't know you know there certainly wasn't a plan to run his traces you know um but look he's he's come all this way um so let's have a go let's see what happens it'll be it'll be a learning day win or lose um dylan's absolutely buzzing to get back on him he's a horse he's very fond of yeah and you know we're looking forward to seeing it and um i know his ownership group g of i've um i felt like i i've apologized to half and half of australia the amount of people that are involved defiantly that came to came up that came up to me since the news uh last saturday yeah um but look hopefully there'll be a there'll be a happy ending to the to the story um to the to the trip you know um we
Speaker 2all thought the australian bloodstock colors would have been in front in a cup but just not royal supremacy a week out we all thought it would be defiantly so do you think you'll have enough pace to lead over 2600 will that be the plan the guy flat out basically all the way he
Speaker 3he he stays longer than the mother-in-law you know you want to you you want to you want to get him out there and use him yeah and then will he be quick enough we we don't know because we've never asked him to do it over a trip like that so um again it's going to be it's going to be a learning experience for everyone um but look i hope for his hope for his connections that it goes well and he shows what he can do um because it um yeah it's been a been a terribly frustrating week obviously um for him um so look forward to seeing it because uh we'll be learning with everyone along with everyone else and is he well oh yeah it's great order yeah yeah never miss the day you know so yeah um on we go i think he's being trotted up this morning so um hopefully all that goes smoothly um we feel it will so but you don't know we felt we felt it would be fine last saturday too so you just you don't know until you know um you let the professionals do their job and make their assessment and um all being well he'll be he'll be good to go on saturday and
Speaker 2what about omni man has he got the class to win a champion stakes against our best weight for h forces over 2 000 meters
Speaker 3oh look big ask of him um i haven't seen a betting market i assume he's a big price he was he's been 18
Speaker 2dollars into 12 dollars with bet 365 since the market went up there
Speaker 3yesterday okay yeah that's interesting look at the form of the form obviously has got a boost um he shaped really well in the geelong cup clearly um you know as we would have discussed before that you know he's a horse that joseph has always had like a very high regard for and has always felt he'd be capable of being like a like a group one horse in this neck of the woods um it'll be his last run for us obviously before he goes to to chris waller as um that's the the the routine for for the horses owned by go racing let's start with joseph they go to chris waller if they're good enough so that's what's happening with him and he's a horse with a lot of talent and um i think he'll do very well down here um he's been a great horse for us and he's been a great horse for us been in great order since his run um it's a it's a big big ask of him um could have had the option of the queen elizabeth but i think joseph felt that the the trip um the trip might just you know as long as they go apace and that this trip might just suit him a shade better than the queen elizabeth trip so um it's going to be really interesting look he's been thrown in deep but the the prize at the end of the rainbow is very big um so let's love him in there and see
Speaker 2what happens yeah 780 into 13 dollars now how many man and at the champion stakes there on saturday afternoon hey mate you've been sensational with your time a lot of love for you on the garage horse and hound text line um it's been great having you in australia i know you go home on sunday but you've been terrific with your time for us here on on giddy up um giving us a wonderful insight into the internationals and the way that you go about it so much appreciated hopefully we get to see you back next year mate um and the last question before i let you leave if i gave you a hundred dollars what would you do with it this week end oh lordy
Speaker 3um god let me think uh hopefully again i haven't seen the markets yet what price is defiantly out of interest defiantly is five dollars so right
Speaker 2okay like um yeah obviously if it was 3200 meters he would be favorite in this race and that's yeah no doubt pinholes 320 king pedro 460. um defiantly at the 550 now so there you go yeah oh look
Speaker 3look i think as as discussed now i think both of them have have both of their own questions to answer yeah um trip trip for defiantly class for omni man um i think i think omni man would be the one that would tempt me i thought he might be a bigger price than that um you know it's it's a it's a classy it's a classy race yeah but um as mentioned now i think there's there's more to come from him yeah and um i i think he'd be the the one that would tempt me the most of the two in light of the questions they have to answer but it's not a it's not a day i don't i don't think we'll be good we'll be going out into the mountain yard
Speaker 2i'll give me a free hundred there so kev you're gonna have well there you go yeah the omni man will do me beautiful um we'll have 100 out or straight each way 50 each way
Speaker 3uh look hey when it's free when it's free garrett i'll duck i'll duck her no dinner 100 on the nose all right then
Speaker 2race eight number nine omni man there for kevin blake and the champion stakes mate hey as i said before thanks for joining us on giddy up you've been terrific with your time enjoy oaks day mate um and of course enjoy champions day and i my mail is that you were just absolutely bopping on that dance floor at the osman great sponsors of our show you'll be front and square for fisher there on saturday oh
Speaker 3gee yeah no i don't um i think that was the first time in the two weeks i've seen beyond 10 p.m so
Speaker 2yeah good on you kev thanks very much for that thanks pleasure garrett all the best there's kevin blake it's 17 minutes past eight so there's some breaking news james j braddock off to chris waller after a very good effort there in the melbourne cup on tuesday so um yeah chris waller got an opportunity to train him i think he's going to get purview as well the other star international horse that aussie care recently purchased from the dermot weld stable so yeah 17 minutes past eight james j braddock off to chris waller after he's really good effort there where he finished seven minutes past eight and he's going to have a really good start on tuesday's melbourne cup he's going to have a really good start on tuesday's melbourne cup time for a break sam freeman and join me next join the conversation
Speaker 1text us on 0 4 9 7 3 6 7 3 6 live across australia this is giddy up with gareth hall yeah welcome back to giddy up
Speaker 2gareth hall with you on this thursday morning happy oaks day 19 minutes past eight sam freeman's not far away but there's a lot of people out there who are there's a lot of people out there who are really interesting article in the herald sun today from gilbert garden and it reads john kanger nominates to join the victorian racing club board in november 2026 elections so former it reads former melbourne racing club chairman john kanger who sensationally quit before last year's caulfield cup carnival has launched a bombshell bid to join the vrc board mr kanger's decision to nominate for the victorian racing club role will send shockwaves through the industry and the prestigious body which oversees flemington racecourse and its centerpiece melbourne cup carnival it goes on to have mr kanger quoted saying my decision to nominate is not about personalities politics or taking sides it's about what i believe i can contribute to the club members and future of racing there's been speculation about some sort of takeover let me be absolutely clear there is no takeover and jonathan munns who has worked closely with kanger before there at the msc has had no influence whatsoever on my decision to stand i have my own views my own experience and reasons for wanting to contribute i make my own decisions always have and always will if elected my responsibility my commitment and my loyalty will be to the members of the victorian racing club nobody else chairman elect vin cox who is set to take over from neil wilson in december glenn carmody and michael sadie are facing re-election so they're the current board members that are going to be taking over from neil wilson um i've served three years of their term and they're going to if they want to go on with it they're going to go up for re-election in december there's other some other big names that i'm hearing as well that will be putting in their application for the board i think it closes at 5 p.m this afternoon so it's going to be a really interesting time in racing politics especially at that famous club the vrc and it'll be interesting to see how it all works out so we might have to A few of the. the people that want to get elected on giddy up and we could have um a debate or they can state their case why they should be on the board we might do that closer to the election but sam friedman i wonder if you'd be interested to go on the vrc board he joins us now g'day sam morning garrett it will be an interesting time in racing politics it always is but we're here to try and find a few winners sam um yeah my job's hard enough i don't need to be um involving myself you and calvin mcavoy going for the um you're already on the board aren't you of the australian trainers association
Speaker 4yeah which i do i do really enjoy that um yeah there's often some robust discussions and we don't agree on everything but i think that's healthy and
Speaker 2yes um hopefully
Speaker 4we're able to to at least um voice a lot of the members concerns and try and get it you know higher up the chain and get some change on a few things
Speaker 2well nothing really would get done then if you agreed on everything anyway so um um exactly right yeah and do you know what the best thing about you young trainers there on that ball you're passionate and you care and i think it's healthy for the game if you've got that type of commitment to try and make the sport better so um keep doing that anyway we need to try and find a few winners there at flemington today and on saturday vip he's a good horse he gets an inside gate you get the young gun zach lloyd aboard your thoughts about his chances in race five at this afternoon yeah decent
Speaker 4horse he's probably been a bit of a surprise package he's um he's only a little fella he's 420 kilos and yeah he's very small i haven't seen perisher in um in real life but i imagine he'll he'll probably dwarf him yeah um today at the races but he's all hard he has a crack he um he probably raced a little flat i thought the other day we we ran him back probably quicker than i wanted to um but it was just a really suitable race so we've spaced his run he actually went out to the paddock for a week and um and didn't do much and and he's come back in and his work's been been strong so he's got a soft gate no weight on his back um favorite looks very talented but um you know i think we can run a a good each way race yeah they
Speaker 2tell him perish is very good for kirimar and james mcdonald would have had the choice on a few horses like nobler and he's jumped off to ride perisher so it's a bloody strong race really as always you would you would expect to have um strong competition during the but this race on oaks day has come up really strong i reckon sam
Speaker 4yeah well i mean you know everyone loves to to have run a week and the races you know they're worth the same as saturday races all year round but but they're particularly difficult to win because you know there's a whole lot of horses that are peaking on the day so you've got to be right at the top
Speaker 2of your game there's andy mackiff the boss of codolphin here in australia think that semantics can beat the other codolphin runner um sequint in that red roses stakes down the straight race seven there this afternoon
Speaker 4yeah well look she's um she's a nice philly affiliate i do think she's um you know we had success in this race last year with point barrow and in karuna and second and flying eblin won it a few years ago i think if philly will be able to get to a similar level it's just um it's coming quickly for her you know she didn't have the easiest start to her prep she had a couple of early on and then yeah she actually she's been to the races three times this preparation she's only been able to run once so she got scratched um upon arrival with a small nick and then they called the races off at ballarat a couple of weeks ago which which was a bit of a setback to be perfectly honest and hard to fathom how that actually occurred but it um it set us back as we were going to go 13 days into this and and she'd have had a bit more experience and so she fronts up um you know she's yeah she's got her work cut out but i do think she's she's going to be a pretty good philly so um the favorites got plenty of runs on the board yeah i i i'm interested to see how the favorite handles the straight it is a very different dynamic and it does look to get a little headstrong so if there's a chink in its armor i'm hoping we can jump on it
Speaker 2yes i think you might be right there with the favorite i remember mark hunter telling me that wilson might not handle the straight with the way that it goes about its work but it was okay down the straight in that trial but paradoxing was going flat out so it was a little bit difficult for her to really get keen in that trial so it'll be interesting to see how she does go there that odds on favorite in the crown red roses stakes today at flemington then on saturday you had inkaruna going around in the fisher stakes over the 1200 meters hanky alpha who's been excellent since joining cindy oldson is the favorite um and was unlucky there the other day on derby day can inkaruna win this race
Speaker 4i think it's a dry track i'd like our chances yeah um favorite obviously looks looks like it's a nice horse and and was very good on heavy ground um first up so i'd like our chances if the track comes up a good four or soft five um i think if they get the rain and tipped over into that soft or heavy range um yeah we we'd probably struggle to to bridge that gap but she's had a really good week she won the she won the um that million dollar race on a nine day backup last year around this time so yeah obviously she's on a on a quick backup for saturday but she's come through it in in great order so i don't think it'll be a problem for her
Speaker 2what's your expectations with point barrow from that low gate in the champion sprint well
Speaker 4look i don't think she could be going any better um her form is excellent it's at a lower level than what she's facing on saturday and she's you know we have stepped her up to this grade obviously on a couple of occasions and she she hasn't quite been able to execute she's had a couple of excuses here and there but you know her racing style is um you know it's harder to execute and win at the at the top level when you give them such a big start and you know the reality is we're probably going to be behind so tempted and jolly star and um it's not an easy feat to to run them down and go past them so but yeah like i said she's in career best form i don't love our draw um i'd rather have been drawn the other side but we don't really have any gate speed anyway so i wouldn't be shocked if we're if we're near last but but even last for her down the straight she's going to be closer than she is you know when she's been racing at corford around the bend so it's got a wicked turn of foot but um yeah tempted tempted seems to have a nice change up speed as well gareth so i don't think that'll be a straightforward
Speaker 2one and she is by blue point if the rain does come as expected there on champions day will she like a slow to heavy track
Speaker 4no i don't think she does okay she's a real fast ground philly um everything we've seen at home she um yeah she she's much better on top of the ground
Speaker 2jeez i wish i knew tom kitten was going to the champions mile a week ago the 91 but jeez he looks it looks a lovely race for him to finish in the money anyway
Speaker 4some of us knew he was going last week the pig
Speaker 2and mud syndicate did they get did they get the six dollars sam did you send out that
Speaker 4message no i'm only i'm only just the conversations were being had um on which direction we were going to go last week and yeah we felt strongly that the mile was the right way to go yeah get the blinkers for the first time in his career which yeah we've sort of we've we've held him back from putting them on we went to put them on in the all-aged last well last prep when he was going to drop back from the australian cup to the 1400 and unfortunately we had to scratch him but look he's had 36 starts he hasn't had them on so um yeah it'll be uh i think it'll be interesting to see um to see how he goes with them yeah he he could uh he could hopefully find a couple lengths which he's going
Speaker 2to need to okay you're saying that he's a chance against autumn glow i'm not giving you a clickbait
Speaker 4no i don't think he can beat autumn glow unless she has a very off day but good prize money for
Speaker 2second yeah well we probably need someone to say something outrageous because it is it looks a boring race really autumn glow just to turn up we have
Speaker 4some clickbait coming up over the next few days but it won't be me
Speaker 2all right then dollar 91 that's a good bet i reckon around that anyway for the place with tommy kitten and then the last race on uh um champions day the final race of the carnival you're a fascinating runner tour sheen who's first up for your stable your expectations with that gallop uh around nine dollars she is there with bet 365
Speaker 4yeah look nice nice man she's um i mean she's got form around point barrow extra galactic she's um she's got a lot of she's got some strong form um yeah a good client bought her at the mayor's sale and um he loves racing so he didn't want to retire he wanted to he wanted to give her another season and um yeah she's a lovely type you know she's been extremely well managed with shane throughout her career she's been nothing but consistent and um you know yet to see obviously race day how she'll she'll go i think she'll probably have some improvement in it but um yeah nice man should
Speaker 2we put her in our quaddies
Speaker 4yeah i'd throw her in
Speaker 2yeah all right then botanical boy looks a lovely race for him on a saturday at rose hill
Speaker 4Yes, it does look a suitable race. Nash on board, I think Nash will suit him. He's not the most straightforward rider to steer and he needs a bit of standing over. So it seems to be Nash's forte. So I think that's probably good booking for him. And he's going where it looks like he's in his right race.
Speaker 2Is it wet enough for the Belmont Gangster in Sydney on Saturday?
Speaker 4Well, yeah, probably not at the minute. But he got lost the other day, first time running up there. He looked all at sea back in the field and didn't corner well at all. He really struggled to sort of get around the bend and balance up. So he's had a bit more time to get used to going in that direction and everything like that. But I think the draw is helpful because that'll help him, particularly around Rose Hill, help him just get around the bend. And look, he's worked strong. So I don't know what price he is. But on his work at home, I can't fault him. But I did think that. He's going into his last run. So hopefully we'll see it come to fruition.
Speaker 2Just having a look. Race five at Rose Hill today or Saturday. He's 8.52.60. Good each way price, the Belmont Gangster. So $100 this weekend. Sam, what are you doing with it?
Speaker 4I'd probably, yeah, I'd probably go in Karuna the Place into Tom Kitt in the Place.
Speaker 2So that's race four, number six, in Karuna in the Fisher Stakes into Tom Kitt in the Place in the Champions. Should we be betting today?
Speaker 4Yeah, I'd be having something semantics each way. We'll try our luck there.
Speaker 2Beautiful. Race seven, number six, semantics. A question from all of our Perth listeners who are up nice and early at 5.33. They want to know, is Tommy Kitt going to Perth?
Speaker 4Sam. Well, he's nominated. But we just want to get through Sunday. It could be a perfect race for him, couldn't it? Yes. Yeah, we're not saying definitely not. But, yeah. Logistically, it gets a little tricky because he's come down from Sydney and I believe he'd have to fly out of Sydney. So it's a little bit of back and forth, which is never ideal. Which is ridiculous.
Speaker 2They should be flying out of Melbourne. Most of the horses are coming. Like, they should have a look at where are they going. And I know that they, I don't know the logistics of it all. But if you've got Buckaroo at Flemington, Pride of Jenny at Flemington, I mean at Cranbourne, you've got your horse there at Mornington, Mike, and you've got no Sydney. Sydney horse is really going for the carnival. Then why not make sure the plane leaves from Melbourne?
Speaker 4Doesn't make sense. Well, I can't answer. Yeah, and again, I'm not completely certain. But my previous understanding has always been that out of Sydney, which logistically, you know, with horses, when you're travelling them throughout their prep so much, you know, there's only so much they'll cop. So, yeah, I'll let you take that up the chain, Gareth. I'll see what we can do.
Speaker 2Good on you, mate. Thanks for that, Sam. Thanks, Gareth. There's Sam Friedman, 35 minutes past eight. This is Giddy Up Stable Mail. As we get set, folks, day in Champions Day at Flemington.
Speaker 1Join the conversation. Text us on 0499 736 736. Live across Australia, this is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 2Welcome back to Giddy Up. It's 37 minutes past eight, Gareth Hall with you. We've got a busy Giddy Up Stable Mail coming your way. We'll find you some winners on Oaks Day, Champions Day, and Five Diamonds Day in Sydney. So, Johnny O'Shea and Michael Kent Jr., both will play a major part today and on Saturday. So, they will be joining me straight after our next break. And then we'll catch up with J.D. Hayes and David Payne. He has Proxima Dea as the short price favourite in the Crown Oaks. I'm looking forward to catching up with the champion trainer as well. Thank you. So, wrap up Giddy Up Stable Mail on this Thursday. And then after nine o'clock, we'll be catching up with David Gately for a special Gators game plan on Oaks Day. Time for a break. Johnny O'Shea and Michael Kent Jr. next. Happy Oaks Day. John O'Shea joins us, champion trainer from Sydney. G'day, John. How's things, mate? Yeah, good, Gareth. How are you, buddy? I am well. I am well. Polymnia, this looks a lovely race for her at Flemington this afternoon in that Inglis bracelet over the mile. You happy with her?
Speaker 5Yeah, no, no. She's been in good form all season. Obviously, she doesn't produce too many wins. But she's been at the elite level for such a long time. You know, this is nowhere for her to hide. And it doesn't, to be fair, to her, though, she's never been a horse drawn really good gate. And, you know, she's got single digits there today. So, we're a bit worried she might shy at the inside runner. I've never seen it. But I think that'll allow Zach to have her in a closer position. And, you know, she'll give her every chance to be in the finish.
Speaker 2She's always flashing hope, isn't she? But if she can settle a little bit closer and then still have that speed at the end of her races, then Flemington should suit her as well, you would imagine. Yeah, no, no.
Speaker 5It's a nice race for her. And she's coming out of some really strong, strong races in Sydney. So, last year, the horse that won this race come out of the mile race in Sydney that she contested. And hopefully it's a repeat performance this year.
Speaker 2Consitulation win from gate one in the Red Roses Stakes race seven today.
Speaker 5Well, if you're being consistent throughout the carnival, that's been an horrendous draw. And, you know, we acknowledge that it's going to be difficult. But I think that we will probably ride it for a little bit of speed. And then, we'll see if we can't get across and get to the better part of the track. So, yeah, we're very happy with her. She's obviously another one that's competed at a strong level all season and been very competitive, you know. So, but we're very optimistic that, you know, she can overcome the draw, which is going to be a main factor for her today.
Speaker 2A better gate for best nine in the Century Stakes over the thousand metres in race nine there this afternoon.
Speaker 5And most importantly, a good scratching in his favour. You know, with the favour coming out. So, he's probably the horse that has made the most improvement heading into this race today. So, you know, he's got to see him down the straight, obviously. That's the only thing he hasn't done yet. But in terms of his preparation and where he's at, he's taken a lovely step forward since his last run. And I'm sure that'll reflect in his performance today.
Speaker 2Yeah, Cavalry Girl out of that race, which does help the case for best nine there in the Century Stakes. And then on Saturday, what did you make? You had King Pedro there the other day.
Speaker 5We were very happy with him. Unfortunately for Damien, he said he was trusting in Willow to give him a good tempo. And Willow wasn't playing part of the game, you know. So, his horse that he was following, Matty Smith, sort of took him nowhere. And he just got held up at a crucial stage and lost all his momentum, you know. So, I think the form out of the race has been great. Fantastic in the cup. And obviously, Chris's horse was a little unlucky in the race as well. It goes to the same race. But we're happy. There's predicted a little bit of rain. And, you know, we'll just be interested to see how Mark wants to ride him. But we're very, very happy with King. He's third up. He loved to get his toe in, loved Flemington. And if we had to ride him a little quieter from that draw, it wouldn't be a problem.
Speaker 2And you'll get pace on, hopefully, there in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, but defiantly in the race, still in Brown McGonigal. I don't think he'll be mucking. I don't think he'll be mucking around there with that gallop.
Speaker 5Well, it's interesting that their intention will be to do that. But, you know. Whether he's got the speed. That's it. He's shown speed at 4,000-meter races. And there's a big difference in tempo, isn't there, you know. So, yeah, obviously, they're going to try to make it a genuine stage.
Speaker 2They'll be going quicker than 13.5, surely, if you're like, you're not that slow. Well, we'll see. Yeah. It'll be interesting. Yeah. Link is on. Yeah. He's been well-supported defiantly this morning. But Pinhole and King Pedro definitely got the form lines for a race like this. And it's a good, yeah.
Speaker 5They've got good turns of speed, you know. They're not plodding stairs. And they're, you know, progressive young horses that have got good form lines all season, you know.
Speaker 2Does Samorelle stay in Sydney or does she come to Melbourne?
Speaker 5I think because of the gate, we'll leave her in Sydney. Yeah. Yeah. So, she can stay here. And, you know, she's in great form. And, you know, the draw is so important today. 1800 at Rose Hill and so too at Flemington. She just drew awkwardly. So, we'll leave her at home. Can she win in Sydney? Yeah, for sure. Yeah. She's just in really good vein of form. She's got a great racing pattern for Rose Hill. She boxed seed. And, you know, without any claims, she comes in well. So, there's no reason why she couldn't
Speaker 2continue on a winning way. Sharjahwaya or something like that? How do you pronounce that two-year-old? Sharjahwaya. Sharjahwaya. There you go. Yeah. How good is she?
Speaker 5Yeah, look. She's a good filly. But, you know, I was an advocate that at the 1100 at Rose Hill, you want to be sort of drawing well or at least taking a position. And that's not her natural pattern of racing. So, she'll be setting him a little start. She's a good filly. But whether she can overcome that barrier, probably baitable.
Speaker 2That's a golden gift worth a lot of money. But looking at her trial, she's got a good turn of foot there, John.
Speaker 5She has. But she's going to be, you know, she'll be worse in midfield. Yeah. I think the Racing New South Wales maps had a sort of fourth last on the side. So we're going to need a bit of luck mate you
Speaker 2know what about linebacker and race eight the five diamonds well he's coming
Speaker 5to a nice peak and his runs all season have been fantastic you know so i suppose the only query for him is the weight and the you know and whether he runs 1800 we think he will run 1800 at rose hill at least and he's meeting uh you know chris's man that beat him the other day a little bit better at the weights so we've got two in the race i think they run very well the horse uh mr chaplin he ran fantastic on tuesday and um funny enough uh vivier occurrence went through the same process last year ran on the tuesday and won the race on the saturday so hopefully uh you know we think both horses would be very effective and and um you know he looks to map well linebacker he's find the one one and you know having zach on a day like that's going to be a big help you know
Speaker 2they bet 71 mr chaplin that hasn't lasted long into 31 now we bet 365 in the five diamonds john if i gave you a a hundred dollars what would you do with it
Speaker 5this weekend i'll bev's
Speaker 2nine bev's nine race nine number three in the final race on oaks day there at flemington good on you mate we appreciate your time as always and good luck today cheers gareth there's john a shay michael kent jr to join me next
Speaker 1join the conversation text us on 04009 736 736 live across australia this is giddy up with gareth hall this is giddy up all thanks to
Speaker 2bet 365 don't forget you've got the six horse challenge in operation on oaks day um it's free to play if you're a bet 365 customer and it starts after race four starting in race four today so that's the six horse challenge um as i said it's free to play you can win some terrific money and it starts race four on oaks day michael kent jr joins us here on giddy up hello to you michael hey morning gareth how are you good thank you mate cheering gita goes around in the first race first up after a couple of handy jump outs your expectations there in the opening race at flemington
Speaker 6today only first up so that is certainly a test for her but we've done a power of work at home she's had three trials had a long thorough prep that was a good trial her last two trials are very good she ran second to geneva who's a listed winner and then uh she beat home jenny in the latest um so yeah i think i think she's very well if she brings her ascot run uh we brought her off a run at ascot over the mile i think she'll go very well she comes across like a mare who's who's just working things out her first aussie prep and she's really come on i think she'll present as good as any horse in the yard she's dappled up looks fantastic got a gun jockey on and i think she'll
Speaker 2go very well ken she's got the cash win first start with harry coffee aboard in the same race very similar um it's
Speaker 6the right greater race for her it's only a mayor's benchmark 70 she's come back a much improved mare and she's trialed uh particularly well compared to last preparation so she's also improved she's trying to get a good run um yeah what a story harry coffee uh he said he's feeling better than he was uh on tuesday so he should be raring to go and um yeah i think both mares have got a nice each
Speaker 2way chance can bustling perform over the 1400 meters
Speaker 6in this afternoon well i'll be in this race next year garris if uh i'll be he's turning me gray so
Speaker 2um oh this
Speaker 6is the gray race
Speaker 2of course in the sub-zero yep um look he mark
Speaker 6dar was on in both trials leading and he won both trials he got things right things were smooth it was a very very messy race ethan brown who doesn't mince his words who's a good judge government said just total forgive run uh they put the handbrake on big time mid-race and he was stuck in the middle and very messy um so i just expect a nice flowing ride from mark get the horse's confidence up have the bit in his mouth um the big track should really suit him um yeah it look he should go if he brings his track work and his trials he should go and run very well um he's just going to do on race day so if he runs very well um but it's hard to be confident off his last start
Speaker 2and then warmunger he returns the queensland derby champ in the manifold stakes there's a few horses that are returning from long injury layoffs in this race but what's your expectations with warmunger here
Speaker 6oh he there won't be a horse who looks better than him on course today he looks incredible he's had the most thorough prep he had sort of three months with matthew williams treadmill tendon rehab program plenty of games he's had the most thorough prep he's had the most developing and then we started fresh again so he's had a slow long build up three trials i think you run very cheeky but i won't be tipping him first up at a mile off a year break but um he's very he's very very well he's um i think he's in for a great prep uh but yeah realistically we're just going to uh balance up and let him work on the
Speaker 2fracas and grand impact in the fisher stakes on saturday keen
Speaker 6to win the race so i can uh
Speaker 2Dancing there on Cup Day, Fisher would probably try and recruit you as one of his sidekicks.
Speaker 6Yeah, that was pretty good fun. Yeah, so Grand Impact's drawn the right side. I think all kind of what you want to be drawn, stand side, out wide. He ran super, probably should have run third there on derby days on the backup. He'll love giving the track if the rain arrives though in the week. And he's an each-way chance. Lafrakis, he's been going excellent at home, but it's fair to say he's a very disappointing last start. Big drop in grade and back to a handicap. So drop in grade, down and wait, blinkers go back on. He's just drawn on the inside. It would want to be wet for him to be in the finish, in my opinion.
Speaker 2Can Charmstone overcome Gate 3 in the Champions Sprint and figure in the finish?
Speaker 6Yeah, I think. She's going to be one of the horses on pace, so she can probably get forward and edge out into the middle. Very, very happy with her. I don't think we could have it going any better. She doesn't want it wet. She'd prefer it good. And clearly very hard to beat the top two mares who are outstanding. But as we've seen all spring, you've got to be in it to win it. And you shouldn't shy away from short favourites. But yeah, very happy with her, Gareth. She'll run to her best.
Speaker 2And Sir Barge attacked the line nicely on Cup Day. This is far harder in the Champions Stakes. But you must be happy with him to back him up.
Speaker 6Yeah, this is harder. But in the Australian Cup, he ran very well against all these. He beat home Birdman in the Australian Cup. And he ran fourth coming from a long way back against Jenny. We ran Zambardo in this race last year. And he was the fresh horse on the scene. And that's what we're hoping. A few of these have had some really tough, gut-busting runs. You know, the Cox Plate was brutal. I know he's on the backup. But he's had a very polite, easy prep. Get back, run on. And Tuesday was the same. It was basically a sit and sprint. They went very steady mid-race. He's pulled up great. And he just loves Flemington. I think he's looking for 2,000. And if things work out, I think he'll run very cheeky. He's a smart horse. And in my opinion, he's up to this grade if things go right. For him. Good push there.
Speaker 2So, Barge in the champion stakes. Now, you've got some big chances at Rose Hill. Storm season in the fourth.
Speaker 61,800 for the first time and drawn wide. So, that makes it tricky. But she's going well.
Speaker 2Cash out. Can he win again?
Speaker 6He can win. He's our best up there. And he's very progressive and looks well-placed. Drawn barrier three with no pace in the race. He'll be right there and hard to beat.
Speaker 2Surely, this looks a lovely race for Zambardo there in the $5. Diamonds. It does.
Speaker 6Unfortunately, we've had a setback in between. We dodged. We tried to dodge the might and power. And we went out for the hill stakes. And unfortunately, he got colic two days after arriving. And it wasn't a bad one. But he had 10 days in the paddock. So, it's a bit of a rush to get back in. But all the tests were done. He's flown through those. He had a tick over trial last week where he won by two lengths. He is pricked. At his best, he's right in this race. Like, I think he's run last time where he showed a good enough turn of foot to put paid a lot of these at the top of the straight. Like, they were sort of, they're our best wafer-age milers, he versus the fin. He just got tired late. It tells us he's going very well. So, again, drawn a bit awkward. We're going to roll forward on him and put him up there. And, yeah, it's a lovely gamble to take for $2 million.
Speaker 2All right. I've got about 40 seconds left. So, She's My Ex is at a rough price in race nine. Let us know if you think. She can win. But if I gave you $100, Michael, what would you do with it this week? I'd have $100 to win on cash out. Rose Hill, race five. Race five, number one. And I've got another Don Bradman for you. What would you do with it today?
Speaker 6Today, I'd have $50 each way on Chiringuita.
Speaker 2Beautiful. Chiringuita, race one, number five there in that first race on Oaks Day. Love your work, Michael. Enjoy your day. Thanks very much for your time, mate. You too, Gary. Thank you. There's Michael Kent, Jr. Jaylee Hayes to join. straight after nine o'clock gator's not far away as well with gator's game plan
Speaker 1join the conversation text us on 0 4 9 7 3 6 7 3 6 live across australia this is giddy up with gareth hall welcome back to
Speaker 2giddy up gareth hall with you it's right on nine o'clock there's a few people texting in asking me i was a bit surprised when kevin blake told me that um that the horse was going to chris waller i wasn't really surprised i knew what was going on but i didn't know that it was public knowledge as as yet so and kevin obviously aussies told the ownership group and i don't check my phone very often so i knew that that was in consideration it was either going to to back to joseph or chris waller in the end they decided to stay with chris waller so there you go maybe i acted surprised because i just you know part of the theater but i wasn't surprised at all just to clear that up um it's a big second hour coming your way jd hayes and the david payne and then gator for his game plan today for oaks day and then for champions day always great to catch up with jd hayes hello jd morning gary thanks for having me um stung third up here over 1700 meters in the rupert lee colors the son of done deal what's your expectations with her today
Speaker 7yeah she's going really well um a little bit fresh last start leading didn't look she does have a big weight but it doesn't have it's not a real big spread so yeah well i hope we can get away with this uh craig williams on board barrier one uh i think she's nature i hope what
Speaker 2do you do from the gate
Speaker 7uh not lead i think she's much better with cover so um she can be a bit more prominent but just as long as she's relaxed with her front cover will be a big
Speaker 2difference you've always told me to chase my dreams and chase your dream goes around in race five today over the 1800 meters can she make the improvement to be competitive here
Speaker 7yeah she's building beautifully um obviously the first couple runs over trips that are unsuitable and she's starting to get up to a more desired trip so it'll be a step in the right direction again a nice barrier pretty good jockey on board yeah he's in a bit of form so i think she'll run better than what i'd
Speaker 2suggest would you be surprised if she won today
Speaker 7i've had a sneaky each way on it so no it wouldn't be
Speaker 2no that's all we needed to know jd just needed to say that at the start very special chase your dream win well i've backed her each way that's all you need to know see you later move on all right then race one salty um now she's got the race experience on her side on saturday and the english banner she was pretty good there on deborah i know johnny o'neill was tipping her um and she won nicely can she go on with it now uh she
Speaker 7looks sort of improved uh for her debut effort she's seen the straight uh the malua team looks to have a nice one in it the franco philly but look i wouldn't be swapping salty for any i think she's a lovely horse and she's trained on nicely blake sheen on board um i think she'll run a very good race test of love
Speaker 2and race two over the 1600 meters saturday
Speaker 7uh yes look he ran very well on everest day and uh barry 11 david lane on board looking forward to seeing him out over the mile um he kieran mcavoy said he couldn't pull him up last start so we think it'll be no issue and uh looking forward to even getting that over a longer trip in time as well it's just uh need to get him to settle
Speaker 2two strong each way chances in the fisher stakes photograph who's backing up from saturday and arkansas kid as well um who's the best out of those two
Speaker 7yeah photograph was um a little bit unlucky on david i think if we uh come to the outside she would have really rattled home um but it was a good effort and she's pulled up super so she gets a chance here arkansas kids a little bit of jumping with him in the mornings it seems to really sharpen him up so a new lease on life for him is a very consistent horse and uh i think he'll run a good price a good race at a good price as well
Speaker 2back against her own sex and at 2000 meters machine gun gracie this looks like it's a nice race the matriarch stakes for her saturday
Speaker 7yeah well i'm in the iron whether to go to 2600 or this and we've elected to come here we felt possibly the best form for us has been over the 1900 2000 like you only have to go back to the naturalism where she was very game against some of the good horses there so um she's well suited here and uh i think she's a nice h-way hope you had a couple
Speaker 2of chances in the final event over the 1100 meters albeit eshmali's entered in uh for that rose hill meeting as well saturday so your thoughts on rahisha first of all uh
Speaker 7rahisha's trialed up nicely and uh she'll probably be benefited for the run um but she has performed well down the straight before and eshmali's flying and we've elected to stay here in melbourne actually so okay uh we'll be leaning towards melbourne and uh we feel like he's got the right part of track and um i think he's in good form
Speaker 2you've got a good record in this race the golden gift act up gets a terrible gate um obviously it's a big money race your thoughts about act up who was pretty good on dubai reckon at caulfield very
Speaker 7good on debut just horror barrier so we'll leave it to nash um obviously it's gonna be pretty hard now for this race but i'm gonna we've got a pretty good pilot on board who'll sum it up quickly and make it cool and he's put he he has also improved out of his run uh we took him to albury for a gallop on the leg and he handled it beautifully so um really happy the horse just such a shame about
Speaker 2the barrier who's a better chance plymouth or evaporate the five diamonds
Speaker 7can't split them whoever gets a better run i reckon whoever gets a better run in the race will go better um i think terrific is what i hope as well you're
Speaker 2happy with both of them how would you write evaporates campaign so far uh look it's
Speaker 7been a little bit mixing matching his form uh there was top plate and the two rack and then last start just put a line through it um he didn't get much luck in running and he was three deep uh no cover at all so i think there's excuses for his last two and i think he can bounce back and looking forward to seeing him out over 1800 meters as well
Speaker 2larder show and romantic accounts are raised seven and nine there at morfaville parksland saturday are both favorite there with bet three six five do they all do they both go to adelaide there and do you expect them to win if they do
Speaker 7dual accepting with them guys ladyshaw dual jewel accepts in the area at bowl but that does look a nice race in adelaide and romantic encounter will dual accept uh on saturday at geelong so um unfortunately we're a little bit early here to make it a call but um ladyshaw does look suitable in adelaide i think he's going very well and we're going to have to wait and see
Speaker 2where he goes wherever he goes would be competitive if i gave
Speaker 7you a hundred dollars jd what would you do with it jesus a few each way plays when we went through it so maybe a big place multi yeah coming up but uh if we had to go straight out i'd probably back
Speaker 2salty race one so race one number four what would your place multi be chase your dream race five
Speaker 7number 10 today yeah into salty into test of love yeah interesting gun gray ski into ishmaelian then play a fair bit we have
Speaker 2to ring david and prune by that house in turac and say hello
Speaker 7bye sharon k in rising
Speaker 2yes good on you jd thanks for that mate good luck thank you there's jd hayes always great to catch up with our next guest david payne proxima dia she's got a tough gate to overcome but she's definitely the class failure head of the oaks the spring champion stakes form shone through there on derby day and the derby of course and um she looks tough to beat today david payne joins us david hello to you yeah how
Speaker 8are you good um good thanks
Speaker 2mate how was your philly this
Speaker 8morning yeah no she's fine travel down good so i'm happy with her
Speaker 2yeah um what does zach do from that gate oh um
Speaker 8look you know we start telling jockeys what to do yes yes make a mistake i think he's got to work it out yeah he knows that he can work and
Speaker 2she's adaptable she could go forward or ride yeah
Speaker 8but uh you're running into that corner quite soon so yeah it could be tricky and how yeah yeah i'll
Speaker 2leave it to him and how is she made after that group one victory in sydney defeating the boys there the other day
Speaker 8now she's well she traveled down well so she's tough yeah nothing not not much to look at gareth but she's tough and has
Speaker 2this always been the plan to back her up in the
Speaker 8oaks yeah we've always uh from when she won her first race i said you know actually yeah were you
Speaker 2like with three million dollars on offer there in the derby and after beating the boys there the week before in sydney were you tempted to go to the derby with her
Speaker 8no i just think it would have been too soon for her okay you know she's not a big robust horse and then you got to put on a float
Speaker 2yeah
Speaker 8and down so mother knocked her she's
Speaker 2perfect didn't she she's unbeaten five from five it's difficult to do especially staying philly
Speaker 8like that yeah i know but look she's tough and and all the margins have been short-haired short-haired short-haired and then she won a couple of lengths
Speaker 2yeah you got to love her because she knows how to win
Speaker 8yeah no look she won't lie down that's one thing
Speaker 2all right you go and get them today mate and then war ribbon goes around over the 2400 meters at rose hill on saturday um she's an h-way price were you happy with war ribbon first up yeah yeah i was just first up over two thousand
Speaker 8you know the horse that's very dull so he'll be more suited to the two-fourth if i gave you two-fourth i'd give you two-fourths if i gave you two-fourths i'd give you
Speaker 2two-fourths if i gave you two-fourths i'd give you two-fourths i'd give you a hundred dollars david a hundred dollars david a hundred dollars david what would you do with it
Speaker 8what would you do with it what would you do with it i'll try to put it on proxima dear that i'll try to put it on proxima dear that
Speaker 2i'll try to put it on proxima dear that world of it yeah all right then that's all world of it yeah all right then that's all world of it yeah all right then that's all we need to know hey you go and get them we need to know hey you go and get them we need to know hey you go and get them mate we appreciate your time as always mate we appreciate your time as always mate we appreciate your time as always david
Speaker 8all the best mate
Speaker 2there's David Payne proximate dare so she's ready to go she's travelled up nicely and she's a winner 5 from 5 and she just gets the job done she knows where that winning post is it's 10 minutes past 9 we'll take a break David Gately to join me for his game plan next here on Giddy Up on this Thursday morning
Speaker 1736 736 live across Australia this is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall on Giddy Up it's time for Gator's game plan with David Gately he joins us on Oaks Day
Speaker 2hello to you Gator
Speaker 9very good morning to you mate half time yeah half time
Speaker 2what do you say to your troops at half time mate how are you going
Speaker 9well all the great coaches adjust to what's happened in the first half all the great athletes can alter slightly what they're doing and enter the second half even stronger so that's the plan anyway
Speaker 20499736736 to join our conversation on the Gareth Hall and Hound text line we like to look forward here on Gator's game plan but we can analyse what happened there in the first couple of days but that point of law victory in the Melbourne Cup Gator boy oh boy
Speaker 9yeah it was extraordinary really if you factor in the 22 other athletes they were in one race and here they are he was in another I mean you know I had a flashback to that Simpsons episode you know where Bart joins in at the marathon at about the last 5k he's fresh as a daisy and he runs away from them it's what it looked like all those that were you know in the finish except for the leader were all near this horse at the 800 and were thrashed so you know the third greatest margin in 60 years says a lot especially off a moderate
Speaker 2tanker how good is he
Speaker 9well I don't know yet but you know sick start I just hope that we can see him for a couple more years obviously with that ownership group it gives you a much more realistic chance doesn't it of having a race horse and then worry about the breeding later on hopefully
Speaker 2that was a great analogy it was sort of like you competing against me over 42k's and then I jump in a car after the first 6k's and then I don't know with a k to go or half a k I jump out of the car behind the bushes and then sprint home that's how it felt to me with point of law over 2 miles it's sort of like who the like I couldn't like how's he done that
Speaker 9and watching him through the line he's actually running away from him still so yeah it was an extraordinary performance you know and every year there's a story and this year was a great one
Speaker 2and listening to Kiramar and Giddy Up yesterday just describing how he's been and Ethan Brown how they've worked this horse gator and I always find it really interesting when you can get inside the trainer's mind and even even Ethan and the way that they worked him even worked him evens on race day and then they gave him a strong gulp the day before his ability to cope with work and his aerobic capacity he is freakish like he could just be something quite special when you listen to them
Speaker 9yeah no I agree and you're spot on I find it fascinating and you know it's no different to you know these are athletes so it's no different to any other sport in the history of sport that you just have to know what your strengths and weaknesses are and I heard that interview and it's almost as if they stumbled upon yeah you know how to train this guy and you know and we've seen it a million times like I can imagine you know you go to the Olympics and ask the trainer top 100 athletes in any of the pursuits they'll all be trained slightly different to cater for their own strengths and weaknesses
Speaker 2yeah yeah you're right like if he didn't bolt on the rider that day then who knows how Kieran trains him but as Ethan Brown pointed out he learned a lot that day so yeah I found it really fascinating he's a star horse and you can't wait to see what he can do in the autumn what about today Oaks Day how do you think this track will play I think it's played pretty well the first couple of days
Speaker 9oh it's been absolutely brilliant especially given you know challenging preparation challenging weather predictions and prognostication six different websites telling you different things it's just great but yeah so with the rail at six that's traditional bit more traffic on the track the last month and a bit more rain perhaps than ideal so I'd expect you know to continue to play well edge off the inside those toes winds look like they'll pick up in the straight today so that'll be worth keeping an eye on
Speaker 2we're going to get Liam O'Keefe on the show just after ten o'clock as well with the track update so we'll get more information there but what about your plays at Flemington today before we start our game plan for Saturday yeah so pretty keen
Speaker 9on Sequin I think she's one of the better bets on the carnival to be honest I'm a huge fan she actually accepted for the Coolmore I saw her in the in the acceptances and they withdrew that and saved her for the Red Roses I think she would have been competitive in that now if that's the case she's going to be mighty hard to beat in the Red Roses the thing is she's still a work in progress she still does a little bit wrong but I love the fact she settled a bit better last time yeah and blew them away against the track pattern so seven by three clearly our best couple of other races I'm a little nervous given the soft five like I've tipped in Zudu I've tipped Sass Appeal and I just wonder if they're a length better on a good four over a five but we'll see how that plays out mate Sequin our best though
Speaker 2today yeah so race seven number three in that good race there for the Phillies down the straight and obviously she's very talented McDonald rides there for the Chris Waller camp so that's a look at Rose Hill I mean I should say that's a look at Flemington and Oaks Day who's your tip in the Oaks are you just with this favourite to win despite the gates
Speaker 9yeah look I think she she not only deserves to be favourite I was really surprised some markets got her out to 280, 290 after the draw I think they'll just go forward to offset that you know I think you know she she seems to be getting better and stronger as she goes up in trip and into her campaign so I think she you know taking the line through the beating the males who then beat quick finish comfortably it's really difficult I think to to mount a case that she's beaten if she gets even luck from the from the gate
Speaker 2yeah and so you think you'll try his luck at the start try and slot in somewhere there Lloyd from from that wide gate
Speaker 9well that's what I'd do I mean there's there's 13 fillies in the race that are 80 to 1 on there or longer so I don't see I don't see what's to be gained by sitting behind 8 of those 12
Speaker 2there's a lot of horses on the quick backup from Saturday out of D'Armas who won the wakeful Ice Lady that was brave in the wakeful after being attacked in front quick finish that was placed in the derby and then Thar were in your colour that were both down the track in the wakeful who do you think the best chance is out of those fillies that competed on Saturday Gator
Speaker 9well I was keen on D'Armas in the wakeful and she won and she still did a little bit wrong so I think she can continue to progress I've got no reason to tip those behind her to turn the tables take your point though Ice Lady was was good really good leading and and had a had a pest strong speed so she's run very very well so I can make a case that she's much more competitive at least with D'Armas I've got no reason to doubt either of them at the trip so that's a look
Speaker 2at Oaks Day which is today of course it's 20 minutes past 9 on the other side of it we're going to go through our game plan for Champions Day and what a day that promises to be it's also 5 Diamonds Day there at Rose Hill so we'll take your questions you can ask any question you want 049-736-736 on the Garrett's Horse and Hound text line and we'll go through your questions the selectors to ask the coach after we have our team meeting at the selection table there going through the key categories as we try and build up a bit of a plan to make some money there on Saturday so we'll kick off Gator's game plan for Champions Day especially straight after this
Speaker 1and we'll see you on Saturday on the next episode of Giddy Up with Gareth Hall
Speaker 2Welcome back to Giddy Up David Gately with me he's been good enough to join us on Oaks Day he's been everywhere this week he's been the star of the show and he'll be on the coverage once again on Channel 9 this afternoon and Gator let's have a look at this Champions Day at Flemington on Saturday I guess the big question is what will the track be basically with a lot of rain predicted up to 15 mils they tell me on Saturday so we'll see you on Saturday
Speaker 9yeah that's that wasn't what I read last night
Speaker 2okay depending on what weather weather report you get I was with the Norwegians that's the one I look at I don't know what you look at
Speaker 9yeah no I've heard yeah I heard the Swedish was the way to go but what a time to be alive but the but yeah so look I've pretty much finished Oz Racing form and the form for Saturday yes I'm just going to go home tonight see what what the track pattern, if any, is today. have another look at just tinker with a few things and send that out late tonight. So, yeah, some things are out of our control, mate, so let's play with the cards we're dealt.
Speaker 2Beautiful. So we'll look at Rose Hill and Flemington. We start off with the key play. So the first athlete that you'll be picking in your side comes Saturday and we're heading to Flemington in the champion sprint.
Speaker 9Yeah, look, I think it's not a day, I don't think it's really easy to pick, you know, a best that isn't prohibitive odds. So I landed on Tempted. I think she can win again. She was only second up the other day. I think the win had a lot of merit. You know, she was closer to that really strong speed than what she traditionally has been. She was left in front of fairway from home and still beat Kai Ying Rising, still beat Jolie Starr, you know, who arguably had a slightly softer run. So I made her the best. First car up the straight, no reason to worry about that.
Speaker 2Then we go, of course, to, to the long division race, the toughest race for you to sort out on Saturday. And would you believe, how dare they do this to us, Gator? The final race of the famous Flemington Carnival, which was race nine. And you've got these mares going around here with Educated at 460, over the 1100 metres down the straight, Trey Magnifique at 850, Torsheen that's first up for Sam Friedman and Anthony at $9. Eshmaly Gator does stay in Melbourne and not in Sydney. So there's some news. There's some news for you at $10 brave to sign at 10 Prestige. Lucky's won her first two starts. She's at $11 electric Elvis at $12 Royal rendezvous at $12. Solari at $12 and Verdot is at $13 here. Um, so what do you make of this race?
Speaker 9Yeah, no, it's, it's tough race 37, um, over the four days, uh, a tough finish, isn't it? So look, hope for alive in the accordion. We've got a few soldiers here. Some of them are like, at a, at a price. Um, I just, I'm worried about. Uh, any Ryan with video, I think a soft five spine, anything worse than that. I started to get a little nervous with this horse, but gee, it was some run on Derby day and he's 13, 14 bucks. So gee, I'm, I'm hoping the rain misses for him. I'm a big fan of prestige. Lucky. Um, he was also double figure odds, but look, there'll be a few in the court. He sent me Royal run over. He sent the educated Trey Magnifique and Esmaly a wide finish.
Speaker 2Yeah. It's a wide finish. Both the boys and girls do battle in this benchmark. I thought that you'd be quite fitting for you after the week that we've had. We finished with the benchmark.
Speaker 9Yeah, no, I think it's a good way to go, but, um, you know, look, uh, what I do like about the races, um, as I say, there's probably three in that race that I think are really good winning hopes and they're double figure odds. So if we're alive and swinging cordy wise, or, you know, in front and we've got a bit of play money, it might be a great race to finish. Yeah. Look, I'm going to go with two down the screen. I think she's flying this prep. Terrific in the two-rack when looking for further. Went to the Tessie. I was pretty keen on her. I thought her and Sovrato were the only two winning hopes. Now, one of them, two down the screen, pulled up with a throat issue. So, forgive file for her. The tongue tie goes on. and she meets the winner of that race seven kilos better. So, look, as long as she can breathe in the run, then I think she'll run a great race. But it is time to stand up for her.
Speaker 2Yeah, so that's two down the street. That's the Dedo horse. And then we go to the champion sprint, because this is the first of our highlight races there on Saturday. Tempted at $1.85, you just mentioned that she's your best bet of the day. I think Jolly Star's a great bet, $1.70 the play. She's drawn perfectly. And then Headwall's at $10, Cabela's at $11, Charmstone $23. Who runs behind Tempted in your eyes, Gator?
Speaker 9Well, Jolie Starr's an obvious given. She just crossed the line with her, didn't she? So she's still early in the prep as well. The advantage for her over Tempted is she's well and truly proven up the straight. You know, I think anything better than a genuine heavy track's fine for her. And she's a danger. Headwall chased her, of course, in the Tab Everest and also the Group 1 Newmarket. You'd think it's advantage Jolie Starr because she does keep beating that horse home.
Speaker 2So, tempted Jolie Starr. Headwall for third. He's on the quick backup after finishing second in that Russell Balding Skybird and Point Barrow. Your top five numbers there in the Champions Sprint. The Champions Mile, well, she's $1.18. She was $1.30 there for a little while, but that was too good to be true, really, for Wadham Glow, Gator and the Champions Mile. Like, $1.30, it's weird saying it, but that was value.
Speaker 9Yeah, there's not a lot of. Yeah, there's not a lot of opposition there relative to her talent. You know, we know Tom Kitten and Lindemann, Buckaroo, like, they're good horses, but they're not in her league, I'm afraid, at $1,600. So, yeah, they're not going to give us even money, unfortunately, because she's a better chance than that.
Speaker 2And then we go to the champion stakes. Most of these horses, apart from the three-year-olds, really, are backing up from the Cox Plate. Eliana's at $2.60, so the punters believe she can turn the tables on Cosmic Crusader at $3.40. Birdman, $6. He doesn't want the rain. Serdelius, $7.50. Omni-Man at $13. Treasure of the Moment, $23. And then Light Infantryman 34, Sabarge 31. It was a good push there from Michael Kent Jr. about Sabarge. Land Legend 60-1, Attrition 70-1, and Von Hawke at 100-1.
Speaker 9Yeah, look, yeah, the Cox Plate rematch almost. It looks a fearsome speed again, doesn't it, on paper with those two leaders. So what you'll probably get is a slightly softer track, and we'll keep an eye on the track pattern. So they're going to be the two key factors, I think. And Aliana, yeah, could certainly make a case. She turns the tables here from a better draw to perhaps sit up a little bit closer and maybe have a head start on Cosmic Crusader this time, who draws widest. And he'll try and repeat what he did there in the Cox by having the last crack at him and running over them. The advantage for Cosmic is a pretty obvious one. It's the rain.
Speaker 2Yeah. I'm surprised he's not favorite Cosmic Crusader after watching the Cox play it again.
Speaker 9Yeah, well, he ran over him, you know. So there were plenty of sooking, you know, that Sir Delius was ridden too close and apparently wasn't fit enough. I can't buy that. Birdman got a squeeze. He was out in time for mine. Aliana peeled out, had her chance. She fought hard. I'll give her that. But the winner was a bit too good.
Speaker 2I think when you analyze that race, the Cox play, and you have a look at the gear changes here for Saturday's race meeting, and you go to the champion stakes and you see Sir Delius, Blinker's first time, I think that says it all I think he was fit enough but whether he, I think they had to change the headgear with him just to try and sharpen him up a little bit, to change his mindset, so Yeah
Speaker 9look, it can work can't it even for older athletes sometimes it's a, it's almost a last throw at the stumps to get that extra inch And then
Speaker 2the five diamonds to Cleesey
Speaker 9It was that horse, Mr Brightside Yeah Yeah, yeah. Yeah, and so it can spark them up.
Speaker 2Yeah. We just lost you for a little bit there, but I think I know what you were trying to say. And then we go to the five diamonds. DiClesi Boulevard, 420, Linebacker, 550, Verona Road, 7, Evaporate, 750 here. And then you go to Plymouth at 10, San Bardo at $10. And welcome to the show. He deserves a big race, doesn't he? He's at $10.
Speaker 9Gee, I'm surprised he's $10. You can argue strongly he's crossing the line with them last time with Evan Lark. And, you know, I do think if he was C. Ma as trainer, he'd be much shorter. They all get to 1800, which I don't really know who's going to handle that best. So, look, this has purely come down to price for me. Welcome to the show, linebacker and DiClici Boulevard all have really, really strong winning hopes. Who's going to be strongest at the 1,800? Comes down to price for me. Welcome to the show. I think he's a $5.50 chance, and he's double that.
Speaker 2Yeah, so welcome to the show, Gator's tip in the five diamonds. And with my AusRacing Bible here that you can get emailed to you if you're a subscriber, of course, at AusRacing. Gator has gone for welcome to the show. Linebacker for second, Gator. Declissie Boulevard third, Verona Rose fourth. And you're throwing in Zimbardo and Plymouth. Your numbers there in the group three, five diamonds, is one of the highlight races there on Saturday at Rose Hill. And there's a few questions coming through already. You like Tom Kitten and Buckaroo to finish second and third. Are you confident that they'll finish in the minor placings?
Speaker 9Yeah, well, Tom Kitten's just a really good, solid horse, isn't he? A bottom-end group one, top-end group two sort of horse. He chased in vain Lindemann last time. I think it's advantage him back on the Flemington, the Melbourne way of going over Lindemann. Add to that, a soft track would really impact Lindemann's hopes.
Speaker 2And it'd be interesting to see how Lindemann goes back around the Melbourne way of going. Was it a forgive run because he hated Caulfield? Flemington's a different track. Chris Waller's giving him another opportunity here at Flemington. So he's the watch horse. I think if he handles Flemington, he will. he'll run a place, but that's the big question.
Speaker 9Yeah, as long as the track's not too wet, yeah.
Speaker 2All right, then. That's a look at our key categories. Oh, the Night Watchman, where are we going there?
Speaker 9Heading to Sin City, Horse Cold, Horseshoe Hill. Yeah. He's drawn for a good run. That was a good return. Thousands, not the horses, go. So pretty keen. He runs well in the last. I think that's a, what is that, a 78, that one?
Speaker 2Yeah, and then we go to the parlay. We'll give away the parlay nice and early today. We're playing at Flemington Gate. Do you want me to read them out, or have you got them in front of you? All yours. All right, beautiful. So we'll go race five over the 1,800 metres. The D-Day horse there at Flemington on Saturday, too darn discreet. And then we'll go tempted in the champion sprint, which is race six. And then we come home with Virto in that final race. So recapping the horses there for the parlay, too darn discreet race five, number five, tempted, which is in race six. And she's horse number six, so race six, number six. And then Virto, don't tell me he's race nine, number nine. He's number one, isn't he? Yeah, race nine, number one. So race five, number five, race six, number six, and race nine, number one, is the parlay two and three at Flemington for Champions Day. 35 minutes past nine. We'll come back with your questions next for Gators Game Plan here on Gideon.
Speaker 1Live across Australia, this is Gideon with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 2Welcome back to Gideon. I'm getting ready to do my six horse challenge with Bet365. If you get all six right, you can win $100,000. So we'll see if we can do that today. If I get it, Gator, I'll give you something. Don't worry about that. I'll look after you. I'll take you out at the Morty Alec pub there and we'll have a parma in a pot. So that's the six horse challenge. Starts race number four. And races one and two and three on Champions Day at Flemington. If your runner doesn't win, you'll receive a bonus bet back. That's right. Miss the winner and you'll receive a bonus bet back. Head to the rewards page and your Bet365 app topped in. Eligible customers only. Terms and conditions apply. What are you really gambling with? For free and confidential support, visit gamblinghelponline.org.au. Geez, I love our family here on Gideon. The questions are flowing through. So let's try our best to get through most of them. G'day, Gareth. I'm Ed. Gator, Cox Plate Day. He had the Ironman bag. I'm a marathon runner and have run 235. I said g'day and he was such a good guy. A bloody legend. There you go, Gator.
Speaker 9Well, he didn't throw in the 235. No, no. It's world-class speed.
Speaker 2That is world-class, 235. I could do 235 for a half marathon, I reckon.
Speaker 9Sure. Yeah, I could do 235 on my bike.
Speaker 2Yeah. Hey, Gator, I think defiantly we'll run them into, the ground and win. I think Peloton is over so we can win as well. Defiantly is an interesting one. Has he got enough speed to get to the front and do what Winkers thinks he can do? Because John O'Shea, when I asked him about whether defiantly we'll be setting a pace that will suit King Pedro, he goes, well, is he quick enough to get there, Gareth?
Speaker 9Yeah. And that's the challenge, isn't it? I mean, the more I watched that Melbourne Cup replay, he might have been something to beat. Defiantly, the way they ran it.
Speaker 2But it's a question we'll never know. It was unbelievable. Yeah. He was going to win regardless how the race was run, point and floor. But it was a weird Melbourne Cup to watch, really.
Speaker 9Yeah, well, put it this way. Royal Supremacy isn't defiantly and held on for fifth. So, you know, again, it's a silly argument because we'll never know. But, gee, I think he would have run a mighty race. But anyway, the 2600's a different beast. And it's funny to say this, but I wonder if it might even be a little bit too sharp for him, defiantly. That's sort of the point you're making. But it'd be fascinating to see him. I can't wait to watch him in the flesh.
Speaker 2Yeah. Do you give Peloton a chance?
Speaker 9Yeah, for sure. You know, I think it was obviously wide against the pattern last time and probably wish they were a little bit wider. But he's a key winning hope for sure.
Speaker 2Terry wants to know, tempted at Autumn Glade carry their Sydney dominance to Melbourne wave going? That's from Terry.
Speaker 9Yeah, well, I can't see why they wouldn't. You know, there aren't too many of the Waller army that come here and struggle. I've seen a few get to call. Even Eliana herself didn't really handle that track the first time she was there. But Flemington's a different beast, I think. And most of them handle it. So it's the least of my concerns.
Speaker 2I think she would have done enough practice the Melbourne wave going Autumn Glide. And yeah, it'd be interesting to see how tempted does go down the straight. But with her turn of foot, you think she'd be made for straight racing. Hi, Gareth. Can you ask? Katie's thoughts on Salah in the Oaks today. That's from Andrew.
Speaker 9Yeah, look, I was a touch disappointed last time. She ran quite well. But I thought she had a chance to sort of reel them in. Obviously, True Rebel then went to the Derby and didn't quite stay. So, yeah, she's in, I think, that second or third wave
Speaker 2of chances. Arabian Rose, you give her a big chance on Saturday
Speaker 9in Sydney. Well, we'll never, yeah, we'll never know what would have happened last time because she held up hopelessly, wasn't she? So, what I do know is she's been really, really competitive with Gerringong in the past. The problem those two girls have is Lazura's been better than both of them.
Speaker 2Yeah, and good luck to the team there with Arabian Rose. She's Jimmy Healy's done a wonderful job with her. And she goes around the hot Danish stakes over the 1400 with Benny Thompson riding her on Saturday. Hi, Gareth. Can you ask Gator about the run and the ride from C. Williams on Hanky Alpha? Gave it none last Saturday. What's his thoughts this Saturday? That's from Darren. I don't know. I don't know. That's a bit unfair, Darren. I think she might have just been unlucky. Or what do you, do you agree with Darren Gator?
Speaker 9She drew in, didn't she? Yeah. So, they just weren't winning from there. She tried to make a run inside the field. I mean, you can't jump over them. So, she couldn't go outside because that's where everyone wanted to be. And that was the best ground. So, a clear forgive run. She actually went through the line really well. The advantage for her is if this rain comes and the track gets, you know, soft seven, even an eight, that's a big advantage for her.
Speaker 2I think. What do you make of David Van Dyke's horse in race two in the sub-zero today? Kai Tao, Luke Cartwright rides for the Queensland trainer.
Speaker 9Yeah. Look, I nearly had he, I nearly, very nearly put him on top. I did the form and I had him, you know, in the top three hopes. And then I looked at the market and thought, how in God's name is that $23 given his form around the likes of War Eternal and those sort of horses. His first up run was a ripper. I see that price as well and it's really gone now. Yeah. I think he can win the race. He's been shuffled down to third pick, but it goes in everything.
Speaker 2Yeah. Good push for the Queenslander. Hi, Gene Gator. Love this segment. Only one I listen to. I might tell everyone else there, Mick, but I can understand why. Can you please ask Gator about Rose Hill Race 3 criteria? My brother and I have a small share. Cheers. That's from Mick from Carignap. Beautiful place there in WA.
Speaker 9Yeah, it is a good part of the world. Yeah. So third pick, I'm just struggling to see, you know, I don't know if I'm going to be able to do that. I don't know if I'm going to be able to do that. I don't know how they turn the tables on Savvy Spy with even luck. I know Savvy Spy draws a little awkwardly, but yeah, with a bit of luck and a relative weight swing, you can make a case for sure.
Speaker 2What do you make of Beth Nye in the last race? John O'Shea was keen there over the thousand metres today.
Speaker 9Yeah, look, I tipped him last time and he had a problem. Cavalry girl was too fast. But look, he was only second up. Cavalry's not there. I think certainly a clear winning hope. Second pick from memory.
Speaker 2And Sulik in that country championship there for Dom Sutton. That is a raffle if you ask me, Garda. Have you nailed it down?
Speaker 9Yeah, tough race. The same question for me comes up every year in this race. Who's going to run a strong mile? You know, because a lot of them get to this trip for the first time or they've been there once and didn't quite run it out. And Sulik's sort of one of those. But I guess, I think he's a better, more mature horse now. So he's in the game. As many of them are, third pick.
Speaker 2Hi, Gareth. Love your show. Heading over to watch my horse, Cartoon Graveyard. I wonder what you think or Gator thinks of Cartoon Graveyard. Of course, goes around in the third race there, the Manifold Stakes on Saturday over the mile. I should say today, I should say over the mile.
Speaker 9Yeah, look, some scratchings have helped for sure. I think I originally had him about sixth and with a couple of scratchings, he's come up a couple of notches. So, yeah, and our top pick may not even handle the soft ground. So you can make a good case there in his back of all.
Speaker 2Yeah, I liked him each way today. I think he will enjoy the ground as well. He's a good horse. He rarely runs a bad race, Cartoon Graveyard. Yeah, he's a ripper. Thoughts on Savarato in race five at Flemington and a place bet on Surf's Up in the hot Danish in Sydney. That's from Liam.
Speaker 9Yeah, I think Surf's Up's going really well for the right race. I'm not sure set weights is really. I'm not sure it's going to go against Lazura. She really should be getting 10 kilos off that horse. The other one, Savarato, I thought was a really good win last time. Perfect ride, but won well and brought that unleashing form down. So she can win. The challenge for her is the weight scale. So she meets some of them up to seven kilos worse here into a set weights race.
Speaker 2Savarato was given one hell of a ride. I had a peach there by Damien Lane there the other day as well, I thought. It was delaying at his very best. -
Speaker 9Oh yeah, that was 10 out of 10. 10 so you know that if they ride them perfectly you just have to be good enough to win and and she was um and she won oh four double

Speaker 9question yeah look i haven't seen too many um been given uh bad rides it's been more about uh you know best horse track playing really well um obviously you know some of those at the top of the uh the tree generally make less mistakes don't they
Speaker 2uh morning fellas great to see revelare back at the track seemed to trial welder's gate to give him any chance in the future he's going to be a great guy and he's going to be a great guy in the chester manifold first up in this class shorter than his preferred distance that's from barney yeah look i
Speaker 9probably want to see him um you know just first up off that decent break especially if they've had a little setback so he did try well though and we know he's a good horse
Speaker 2how does gator think my horse she's supreme we'll go and race one the english spanner at flemington that's from joanne from uh boyland i think that is good luck to you joanne it's a difficult race for the form experts to try and predict with um a host of people who are going to be there for you first starters down that straight at flemington gator but i wish you the best of luck yeah no
Speaker 9100 same um you're going really hopeful don't you it's uh it's a good feeling but certainly trial well see some of them trialed brilliantly didn't they in that race uh gee it's going to be a really interesting watch um i noticed a couple you know steaming home from the back in the trials a couple of trials are leading by 10 and winning so yeah can they bring it to game day i've got
Speaker 2one for you in that race gone sk i know gate two is going to be a really interesting race for you it's not a great gate down the straight especially on the final day but they are two year olds so sometimes that can be an advantage being on the fence um yeah it looks fast yeah the frankel feeling yeah hi boys i bet cosmic crusader in the cox plate and going to follow him again in and in sydney i like linebacker in the five diamonds your thoughts there we've talked about cosmic crusader what about linebacker in the five diamonds gator
Speaker 9yeah he can win for sure i thought he was um you know in sort of left a bit of a sitting duck for the glitchy they hit the front a fair way from home and and was run down by a good one as it turns out it's a little weight advantage this time um i certainly don't think 1800 will pull him up
Speaker 2yeah i'm interested in omni man on saturday despite being back in trip keen on gator's thoughts that's the joseph o'brien galloper that was pretty good in a geelong cup
Speaker 9he's the fresh blood isn't he uh the geelong cup form is very easy to like given what we saw on saturday and he made good ground against the pattern of the day there challenges are obvious uh back in trip wait for age
Speaker 2what's your best roughy on saturday gator at flemington or rose hill that's bully wants to know from bellarat well
Speaker 9i had verdo race nine number one but as i say if that rain hits they probably won't even run um and welcome to the show at 10 bucks in sydney where my two two of my value plays at
Speaker 2double figures yeah darcy bale big fan of gators i know too darn discreet his gators d-day horse but could the argument be prep and time to stand up in my very humble you know what they're darcy i totally agree eliana isn't it like she's meant to be the next big thing and um she's had her opportunity but this is her time to put her hand up and say okay then i'm the real
Speaker 9deal yeah look i agree it's getting really close to um to d-day there as well i think i think the thing is it depends what your expectation is right if you're thinking she's the next winx then no um but there aren't too many of um what she does do is is try really hard you know um i loved her effort in the cox play they went to her and she really fought hard um and when she won that the race in sydney at the end of last prep she showed great tenacity so i don't have any knock on her application and she's just perhaps not you know she's not as good as if you're if you're thinking she's going to be the next you know winx or via yeah she's not that but she is who she is right can you ask
Speaker 2if you're each different gravy with his hot chips today that's from turf cutter
Speaker 9uh again a couple of scratchings have helped um to bring a couple of horses who originally were you know 25 30 to one to give them mathematically a better chance of of winning we know his best is good enough to be competitive here
Speaker 2gate it's just a wire here i think photograph is a moral in the fisher at flemington on saturday held up a long way down the straight last week and the wetter the better yeah i'm
Speaker 9keen there as well i'm surprised they're uh you know around eight bucks i think the rain's a huge bonus if that if that girl is running really well on dry ground which she is um then she's flying but she's a
Speaker 2better wet tracker thoughts on ray mcnearer the stable have seemed confident throughout the prep and he hasn't had much luck pikey hasn't been able to use the whip just yet today he gets his chance doesn't he he does
Speaker 9i wish he drew wider but um you know they'll have a plan they'll probably i think they'll do what they did with this horse last time he drew in up the straight uh and and snag him back and try and hook over their heels that's what i think will happen um i'm left with him on top after those scratchings i'm not upset about it either
Speaker 2steve from truck and says could point of law be the best chance for a horse to equal mccarthy divas three melbourne cups in a row would be or would he be sent to stud before he got a chance um uh yeah i don't
Speaker 9know i'd love to see it yeah it's lee friedman
Speaker 2said after mccarthy diva won her third melbourne cup go and see the youngest person here on track um because they're the only that might see something else like this happen ever again or horse winning three straight melbourne cups and i believe that it probably nearly won't happen again in today's world so um you get long yeah 200 years jimmy regard looks well overs in race four at flemington on stakes day thoughts
Speaker 9gator he's not one of mine jimmy um he was better last time but he had to be because he was awful first up yeah
Speaker 2what about salika in race five for pollard and william pike in that race today in the matriarch stakes over the 2000 meters in fact no it's saturday i should say
Speaker 9yeah i think she's competitive for sure uh she was um certainly uh a really honest effort last time she raced like she's looking for 2000 there as well i think i've
Speaker 2got a fourth pick i'm going to need to start the day with the winner so i'm not chasing my tail all day autumn slide in the first that's what i'm thinking your thoughts there that's not me that's from one of our listeners
Speaker 9yeah no i'm happy with autumn slide on top um do uh do wish we do a little better but it didn't stop them winning from wide gates on tuesday if they were
Speaker 2good enough can your color win the oaks that's from
Speaker 9oscar i'd be surprised
Speaker 2yeah no one's spoken about fundamental nature's win on cup day i haven't seen a win like that since chautauqua thought it was the win of the carnival
Speaker 9yeah she was great she was
Speaker 2great yeah but there was what was called point of
Speaker 9law yeah yeah i threw her in the quaddie i just think i just thought she i just want to see her ridden cold i think that's the key to her they rode her cold and hey presto yeah big finish slash win uh
Speaker 2miss stalwart race one today at flemington gator
Speaker 9that's from brad uh miss stalwart uh not in the top six no i'm afraid
Speaker 2um show business in race nine rose hill and sabato seems overs in the five diamond gator
Speaker 9uh show business yeah i think a place i think it's over the odds though i think a fourth pick um zombato gd day's looming large here um for him uh i just wonder if he needs a bit of jar out of the track but gee i know he's had an interrupted prep again um yeah yeah he's a he's a fourth pick he could win but he's gonna have to do it without
Speaker 2me on him burley is fighter in race nine there um justine says i'll put this tip in my ais and it's come out with this galloper what do you think of my my ai basically system well
Speaker 9yeah i mean is that the right terminology these days um yeah there's a lot of artificial no anyway uh look i think um look i don't look it's a race i could make a case for 10 you know hence the you know it's a bit of a long division race itself but um i've got others ahead but we get stuff wrong hey gator
Speaker 2have a wonderful day we appreciate your time as always in fact hang on i've got to take a break i'll recap your best bets straight after 10 o'clock lock for a couple of minutes join

Speaker 10liam morning gareth
Speaker 2um how's things mate have you enjoyed the week how are you holding up
Speaker 10yeah holding up well it's been a great week so far i was saying to someone yesterday cup day was the best day i've ever had on a race course yeah 25 working it was just awesome the performance from robbie the race the weather the crowd it was yeah sensational it had it all
Speaker 2didn't it really like the weather you thought what's it going to be like on cup day in the end it was perfect not too hot not too cold and then robbie williams to deliver that master class like he did there on cup day and to be invested like he was it was a special day i reckon
Speaker 10yeah it was uh he he was fully fully invested he was he embraced the whole day and the lead up and all of his interviews so yeah he was certainly worth every cent and he's going to be hard to
Speaker 2match again next year geez i'm copying on the text message today you in the greys race gareth that's the best i've got all day i don't know if i'm going that grey um what's your what do you how do you think the track will play today obviously it's been um it's there's been a bit of rain this week um there's been some rain during the race meetings even from cox plate day so how's how is she holding up mate yeah
Speaker 10it's holding up well we've we've moved the rail out to the six meter position uh for today's cards we're at three meters cup day uh race really well that day stayed on the fence the whole day which was great given we were on a soft track early and the rail move covers all that wear and tear around the home band we've got some marking up the inside of the straight um but i think given that it's a it's a fine day from here on in um that should hold up okay and we received five and a half millimeters of rainfall last night
Speaker 2is it the wider gate still the place to be down the straight
Speaker 10yeah i think it'll be probably more a bit of that used up a bit of that ground there um yeah so i think you know if they want to go out there they can i think it's more where the speed goes really that where you've got to follow um like damien laying on annabelle's um wanted to edge out there and he drew in and out so they can go where they want it's probably more
Speaker 2where the speed goes um what about around the circle today will the wind conditions have any part to play regarding a pattern
Speaker 10it's probably more of a cross tailwind the winds from the southwest so it's it's more of a a cross headwind in the home straight than a cross tailwind so shouldn't have too big of an effect although it is breezy um and then i think for the straight course racing they might just look for a little bit of cover just so they're not too exposed to that wind too early all right
Speaker 2what's your what's the your best today what are you
Speaker 10hearing mate i like far each way at big odds yeah i liked its gallop of breakfast with the stars and it and it didn't didn't do a lot in the wakeful but i'm hopeful it can show something today and
Speaker 2what about where will the rail be champions day uh champions
Speaker 10day will put the rail at nine meters so that will cover all the wear and tear around the home turn and then um by champions day there'll be consistent marking right across the strait because that'll be day five um and there's rain forecast so how much i am uh about 12 millimeters it's saying at this stage and the bulk of it um in the early morning of saturday and then more tending to showers during the day so our best case scenario would be that we get that rainfall early saturday then it clears away for racing and then hopefully we're on a on a nice soft track but if those showers hang around during racing given it's day five of of the carnival it certainly could get in the heavy range all
Speaker 2right then so um it's going to be a it's going to be rain affected regardless so soft maybe to heavy depending on when that rain arrives
Speaker 10that's exactly right yeah if the rain continues during the meeting i think we'll definitely be on a heavy track but if it can ease off before the first um hopefully it's just a nice a nice you know soft seven i wish mark
Speaker 2hunter was in the studio i can see all the love coming through on our garrett's horse and hound text line there liam praising you so um what a great job that you've been doing with your team this week under some difficult circumstances with the weather that's been um around over the last week and a bit now since cox plate day so well done job well done thanks guys
Speaker 10don't stuff it up over
Speaker 2the next couple of days i'm only joking thanks thanks brother benny is scary from racing.com joins us okay ben
Speaker 11yeah good day g um
Speaker 2what are you expecting on oaks day yeah
Speaker 11i'm expecting it to be maybe a little advantageous of that southerly blowing like we saw on cup day horses closer to the speed but there's a bit of pace in most of the races so i'm thinking it'll race beautifully as it has done for the first two days brilliant track that is flemington and he's an absolute star liam okay so i think let's back it into race pretty well i think you will want to get edge away from the inside pretty quickly though
Speaker 2yeah where do we start with your plays
Speaker 11well i think there's two i do think there's a stack of horses at good odds today that can run really well but in terms of the favorites that we might want to back there's two short price favorites that i think should win in races for sass appeal and race five perisher so you know if there's partners out there that like to multi those type of horses up i wouldn't talk anyone out of it um sass appeals about a dollar 70 i don't think she's under the odds by any stretch of that price she was excellent in empire rose stakes and she tackles a much weaker race where she's brilliantly weighted under the conditions of the race so i think she'll go forward and be awfully hard to beat and perisher looks really smart he beat the key rival in nobler last time out he's only got upside and i think jay mack can go forward today but there's there's plenty of double figures i
Speaker 2like today just with sass appeal um what's her perfect round it's not too wet for her
Speaker 11today no i think i don't think we'd um be on too wet a track today i don't think we're gonna get any more rain and there was good drying weather last night so yeah i think the track will be okay for her
Speaker 2all right beautiful so keen on sass appeal and perisher races four and five years ago i reckon perish is the real deal the team i reckon um so it'll be what else are you doing from a punting perspective
Speaker 11mate yeah value today there's plenty of it so race one i think all business is a massive price at double figures she was very good two starts ago she went around at group three level behind surfing bird she split mares the caliber of on display and astral flame see that's an outstanding form for this benchmark 70 and then she went to sail cup she had eip h and it was a bottomless track where she had the pattern again so just ignore the fact she's run since i think she's A big price, I think Keitel and Misty Whisper can run Well, in race two, Keitel was enormous first up in Queensland. He'll be fitter, suited, rising in distance. One of the class horses of the race. He was a Recampton Cup winner last preparation. Misty Whisper's a raw talent that does a lot wrong, but he'll love Flemington 1400. So he's down in the weights and I think can run well for you. And we go to the Melbourne Cup Carnival Country Series final. I think Flying Mickey is the blowout in that race. Now, he's had two runs at the mile and they say duck eggs, but they were both completely inconclusive. One was 12 to 1600, second up went forward, which is not his go, and the other is four out of five lane. So he's been in the wrong part of the track in both runs this preparation and run enormously well. So he's last two starts. So I think he should be sure of what the market's got him. He's got Ben Mellon in the saddle. He'll get back. That's why he doesn't win a lot of races. But I think most of the field are a query at the mile there. So he's a nice each way bet as well at a price.
Speaker 2We won't see the Noonan brothers on Sunday. If Flying Mickey wins, I'll be off and gone. I don't know where, but boy, that would be one hell of a performance and result there for the Noonan boys. If Flying Mickey can win that country final at $23 with bet 365 at the moment. Do you have a quaddie for us, mate?
Speaker 11I do. I don't have it on me. No, I'll get it for you. I've just finished recording layback. So I'm on my way out of there. So I'm in the car pulled over. So I do think it's a good day for a quad today. Beautiful. But I'll formulate that a bit later.
Speaker 2No, we'll get that. I think Louie's got it ready to go. And we can watch you on racing.com this afternoon, Benny. It's been a great carnival so far. Yeah, it's going to be good fun.
Speaker 11I'm looking forward to today. Tommy Haylock jumping in the chair for Dan Cobby, taking over there. So he's got some big boots for Phil. He has. Look, Dan's been outstanding in the first two days. So I thought the Betfair graphics have come up beautifully on racing.com. So we're looking forward to going to day three of four, premiership quarter time.
Speaker 2I'm surprised that Tommy Haylock, with the work that he does, and the media, and he's the boss, of course, said to Dan Cobby, hey, mate, I'll just do the two-cup week. It is the biggest week. But he gave Dan an opportunity. Now he steps in for the final two days. So good luck today and say good-bye to Tommy for us.
Speaker 11Yeah, we're going to need a little bit of luck. We'll do. Looking forward to it. It's going to be an outstanding day.
Speaker 2There we go. Mark Hunter's been good enough to join us on this Thursday morning for a special mini Hunter's Edge. Hello to you, Mark.
Speaker 12Morning, Gareth. You just got me out the sauna. I picked up a late ride at Hamilton on the highway next week.
Speaker 2Yeah. Louie said, we'll get Mark Hunter on V-Mix, and then he said he's just been out of the sauna. I said, do not do that to the audience. What did Simon Beasley say to you the other day? What did Simon Beasley say to you the other day, Mark?
Speaker 12Look, I picked up a ride at Hamilton in the next week, Gareth, on the highway. They're going to have a sauna. Imagine. He said to me, Simon Beasley said, look, I really enjoy the show. Can you do us a favour and not get your head on fire?
Speaker 2It's like the camera. Cameras are nice and close as well. I told you you should have worn make-up when you come on, but you refused to do it. Well, never mind. And you're providing the VRC members today with your punters club. How did you go on Saturday? You weren't that far off them.
Speaker 12I mean, Tuesday, I should say. Up the top and at the peak of level five. It's a great spot. I haven't worked with Guesty for years. He's a beauty. He's really good to work with. And he got the better of me in the last race, so I'll be able to make amends today.
Speaker 2I remember when I was up there one time and Guesty there, and he's like, you know, he's 60 going on 21, Guesty. And he's got his brill cream in his grey hair. And he's there with a bit of swagger, Guesty. And he's done the form. And the first leg of the quaddie has been done and run and won. And James McDonald wins at $20. And then someone goes and tells someone else in that crowd that, do you know that Mark Guesty is James McDonald's man? And then he copped it. How come you didn't have James McDonald in the first leg of the quaddie? It made my day. I never laughed so much prior to Guesty copping it. But ever since then, he's been the crowd favourite up there, Mark.
Speaker 12Well, he puts J-Mac in everything. J-Mac's been doing all of his bits on Saturday, so he's certainly making amends now.
Speaker 2Now, what about today, mate? How do you think this track will play?
Speaker 12Look, I walked it at 4.30 yesterday, Gareth. I got drenched and a seagull shat on my back, so it wasn't a great. It wasn't a great experience out there, but it.
Speaker 2Well, it's a good experience. That means you're back plenty of winters. Isn't that good luck if that happens?
Speaker 12I don't subscribe to that theory. I didn't at the time when I felt it on my back. It wasn't ideal. Look, I think when I walked it, it was a bit softer than it had been, but the wind was howling last night, so it was at least a soft five when I walked it. The inside was still. I thought Cup Day, the inside four lanes were clearly the firmest, and yesterday when I walked it, it was probably a little bit the same, but it's a lot wetter and it's getting some more wear, so I would say. The inside will be OK early, and then probably, you know, chop out after that.
Speaker 2All right, then. Where do we start with your best bets?
Speaker 12Well, I'm just going to go. I'm going to play an all-up three. I've got a three-league all-up and I've got a value play, so the three-league all-up, I think race three, number four, Tabby Time will run a place. I think if it went a length better last time was a good thing. It just died on its run. Matthias got the better of it late. Now, Gate One, James McDonald should sit leaders back at every chance. I just can't see how it doesn't run a place. I think that race five, number nine, Perisher, I know the odds have gone, but it's part of the all-up. I think it's a really good horse. Its overseas run was a beauty before that first-up win. It should just win again. And race eight, number one, Proxima Dia, I just think she's better than them. Her win two starts ago, she made that long run, was terrific. She was just getting strong on the line last time. Yes, she needs some luck from the gate, but I think you'll get across, be fourth or fifth, and she should be too good. So, a three-league play, race three, number four, a place, race five, number nine, a win, race eight, number one, a win. And my value play. In the last, I think this will be a terrific race, nine, number 14, I'm Foxy. It had no hope whatsoever for the sub, a totally unsuitable race. There was too much pressure. Got stuck three wide, didn't drop out. It's a lot fitter. It handles the soft. Not a lot of speed here. I'm hoping that Jamie Mellon spears straight to the top. You would have to not have been watching the races to know where to go for the straight races. It should find the spot. Hopefully, it can dictate the race and can lead them in the rear end. So, it's the value play, race nine, number four. Number 14, I'm Foxy.
Speaker 2Can you give us a quaddie, Mark?
Speaker 12Or is that too much to ask? I'll give you two quaddies, Gary. Oh, thank you. Two quaddies. The first one, you take. So, we're banking on either sequined or Proxima Deo winning here. The first leg, take the field. If you're going to be bothered leaving 15 and 16 out, you can do that. But I couldn't be bothered, so I'll take the field in the first leg. Second leg, we'll take number three, sequined one out. She has to settle down the straight. She's been down chasing Paradoxium in that trial. She did settle there, but that was with a man. So, we'll take her one out in the first one.
Speaker 2That's interesting, Mark, because I remember you telling me, like, who was that Peter Moody, Kath Coleman horse that you. Alpha Sophie. Alpha Sophie. And you declared it like a. It won't handle the straight. She's not a betting proposition. She was $1.90, and guess what? You were right. And you said the same thing about sequined, and now you're tipping it one out.
Speaker 12No, I was wrong. I tipped Alpha Sophie to win, then I realised after the event, Gareth, but never mind.
Speaker 2So, what are you doing there with sequined? You were adamant there the other day it wouldn't handle the straight.
Speaker 12I'm going to put her in. Sequined in the first quaddie, one out, and I'm taking a second quaddie with her, with some more numbers. So, before you interrupted, sequined one out in the second leg. Third leg, we're taking one, two, and four. Proxima Dia, who I think will win. Isolated is your leader, and Diamus gets the beautiful run. Last race is open. One, three, seven, eight, ten, eleven, fourteen. So, the first quaddie, field, into number three, into one, two, and four, into one, three, seven, eight, ten, eleven, and fourteen. The second quaddie, we're taking Proxima Dia, one out. So, we're going field in the first leg. Second leg, one, three, six, and sixteen. I think you'll see Mzara ride a beauty on Calamari Ring. He'll come behind him. He'll duck and dive. Sequined the one to beat. Semantic's a really good filly, and I'm wavering the untapped one. Third leg, number one, one out, Proxima Dia, and come home again with all those numbers. So, the second quaddie is field into one, three, six, and sixteen. Into number one, into one, three, seven, eight, ten, eleven, and fourteen.
Speaker 2You put in a lot of thought to these quaddies. I appreciate that. So, I love the way you're thinking today. There you go.
Speaker 12Thank you very much.
Speaker 2And then Champions Day is going to be a beauty. We'll have the Hunter's Edge there tomorrow. I like this text, mate. What'd you make of Melbourne Cup Day? And this is an interesting text on the Garrett's Horse and Hound text line. Kieran Murray's not a better trainer than the others. He's just a better tactician. Would you agree with that?
Speaker 12No, no, I would think Kieran Murray is an unbelievable. That horse, point of all, was a beauty. But to race how it did at Geelong, and then, you know, a little bit keen, and luckily the pace was on, and it could settle a little bit and win the race. But then to come back into a Melbourne Cup, not long after, be back in the pack where they're going slow, and have the horse settle reasonably well, I think that sums up Kieran Murray. How he worked the horse out, basically galloped the hell out of it, and took the freshness off it, and turned it around to win a Melbourne Cup. So, no, I think Kieran, when he does things like that, he just shows you why he's better than just about everybody else.
Speaker 2Yeah, he's a magician. And he is. They do get their tactics right more times than not,
Speaker 12don't they? Yeah, look, they've got that many horses. They're going to get them wrong sometimes. But, no, they tick all the boxes. And I think his training is just. He has certainly got that stroke of genius about him,
Speaker 2for sure. Especially this spring. I reckon from about. When Saintly Dancer bolted in at Flemington, in that day, I think that was Maccabi Davis State's day. And then they had a big day in Minnetonka. Stakes Day and then he hasn't looked back. It's been a complete and utter domination this spring by Seymour.
Speaker 12His voice is starting to go. He's got to hang on for a couple more days.
Speaker 2Good on you, mate. We'll catch up with you tomorrow for the Hunter's Edge. Thank you. There's Mark Hunter. 20 minutes past 10. We'll take a break. On the other side of it, we'll continue on Bag of Tips and then it's a special treat. David Taggart will go through each and every race on Flemington for Oaks Day today at around 10.40 this morning. The little master's in the studio
Speaker 1as well. On 0499 736 736. Live across Australia. This is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 2Back to Giddy Up. It's been some preview, folks. Day in Champions Day here, if I say so myself, with Mark Hunter and Benny Ascari from Racing.com. Gator with his inside knowledge there and his insights into Oaks Day as well. And then we're going to have David Taggart just after 10.40. So we've got you all covered here on Giddy Up ahead of Oaks. Oaks Day, as we continue on Bag of Tips. And there's plenty of meetings around the country at Gosford. Luke Vanessian likes race 2, number 8, Pearl of Dubai. Race 3, number 1, Lion Eyes. And Pentagon, race 5, number 2. Rebecca Hill at Ipswich likes Canadian Fling, race 4, number 1. Race 5, number 1, Mr. Worthington. Scott Embry at Belmont came on race 6, number 2, Cable Rock. And race 2, number 2, Talk Too Much. So 6-2-2-2. Darren Carroll at the Kilmore Trots. Waikare Adiana or Adina, I should say. Race 8, number 2, and race 9, number 7, Icy Red. So 8-2 and race 9, number 7. Harness Racing New South Wales, the home of the Carnival of Cups where Australian music royalty meets quality harness racing action. Amanda Rando likes race 3, number 7, Nothing But Waves. And race 4, number 2, Jimmy James Maguire. So 3-7-4-2. And George Ferugia at Sandown. Great night of greyhound racing. Heats of the laurels tonight. He's keen on a few. Race 4, number 3, Little Monkey. Race 7, number 5, Show's Promise. Race 9, number 1, General Frankie. And Paul Winder. Race 10, number 3. Great night of chasing action from Sandown. We've got the Top Guns on Saturday night at the Meadows and the Hume Cup. So 3 group 1s there Saturday night. We'll preview that card more in detail with Jason Adams and Georgie Ferugia tomorrow morning. And then Q1 Lakeside. Race 1, number 8, Kenya Eclipse and Massaro. Race 8, number 8. You can check out racingqueensland.com.au for where Queensland is racing today. This man's a dead set superstar. One of the very best in the business as well. When it comes to chasing action, he's going to dominate the racing.com coverage on Saturday night as well. He's SEN Trax very own, Mitchie Abea. He's done the form for Queensland tonight and he might have done the form as well for Sandown as well. So we'll ask him for a tip there. Mitch, hello to you.
Speaker 13Hello, my friend. Good to be with you.
Speaker 2What are we doing from a punting perspective, mate?
Speaker 13We're going to go to Q1. Now, look, I've probably got to put my hand up and say I haven't been as good as I should have been of late. But we had a nice result, Samson, last week. Top 3, top 4. That was a play. That was a dog I tipped out at $81. It did run third. So we got a little bit back there. I'm going to go race 6, number 3, Gordon. Keeping is my best bet on the program tonight. I think the Grahams got another, or added another string to its bow by showing some early zip. Used to be a get-back-run-on type. $5.50 really suits it. Loves Q1. You're looking at around $3.30 there. So race 6, number 3, will be my best on the program. Go to race 8, number 3, Blue Magician. I think this dog's just over the odds. $9 the win. Place-wise, you'll get around $2.20 or thereabouts. Gee, it's been in some really good form. It's won its last two. It's absolutely flying. And I think it gets a really nice map here. So that was race 8, number 3, Blue Magician. Going value again, race 9, number 7, Blue Art. This is a race where 280 the field or is your favourite, Kobe Keeping. The rank outside it is Blue Art at $7.50. And I just think it maps ideal here. Kobe Keeping's got a bit of speed. Can't run the time that we can. And I reckon you can play win, top 2, top 3, with race 9, number 7, Blue Art. And then I had one more for you. And that fell, actually I don't know why it's put it in this order, but race 2, number 2, Roman Rocks. I think it just maps nicely. Gets a run on the back of the red-gray soil. He's got good early speed. We can sit on it. I think we can run it down. Doesn't look like a strong race. And I think there's a false favourite in it.
Speaker 2Beautiful, mate. You go and get them today. What's your very best?
Speaker 13Race 6, number 3. That would be my best. Gordon Keeping. That would be the very best. Followed by race 2, number 2 and the other two are at value. So cracking night of racing. We'll do it all again tonight on the Lids Fly. Corey Smith and myself. And then, as you said, dot-com coverage on Saturday night. Looking forward to that. Hopefully try and find a few winners and tear it apart.
Speaker 2And what about Sandown Heats and the Laurels? We've got the Top Gun, on Saturday night as well at the Meadows. Your thoughts there on any of those feature races you would be betting yet?
Speaker 13Well, tonight on race 3, number 1, Paul Oswalt. I think it maps beautifully. It's drawn really nicely. I think it is the way to play. So that was race 3, number 1, Paul Oswalt. And then I was also with race 5, number 2, impetuously. I thought those two were big, big, big chances of winning tonight at Sandown Park.
Speaker 2You go and get them, brother. We appreciate your time as always. And good luck.
Speaker 13Thanks, mate. Appreciate it. Have a great day. Happy punting on Oaks Day.
Speaker 2Yep. There's Mitchie Abaya there with his best there at the Dogs tonight. And also a bit of an insight there what's happening on Saturday night at the Meadows. That was Bag of Tips. Thanks to Oz Equipment Rentals, the Mighty Ultima Hotel and Bet365. We'll start our Thursday form lounge next. Josh McLaughlin from Jig Racing and Johnny Kelton will join me. And then after that, we'll go back to Bag of Tips because we've got a special preview of Flemington today with the man that won the Oaks 31 years ago in Dave
Speaker 1Ataggett. Text us on 0499 736 736 Live across Australia.

Speaker 14G'day, Gareth. How are you, mate?
Speaker 2Good, thank you, mate. How's your carnival been?
Speaker 14Yeah, just about cross-eyed, Gareth. Yeah. I'm sick of the sight of them, but look, no, it's been good. Derby Day was very good for, I think, most punters around the place, and we're able to sort of just get out with Sabarge on Cup Day, but we had a lot riding on whether we won or lost on him for the day. And I think today looks like a pretty good day for the punters as well. So, yeah, looking forward to the end of it, Gareth, as good as it's been.
Speaker 2What are you like today?
Speaker 14Well, I think it's the obvious. We were very keen on Merigold when it was floating around that 20-1 mark, and unfortunately, she came out. So, just watch. I'm not sure the reasons on why she came out, but we were quite keen on her to log today. So, just see where she pops up, but I think the two obvious are Perisher and Sequin. I just love what that Perisher did up there at his Ozert debut. I think he's been very well found in the markets now, but I think he'll win. And, obviously, Sequin, it does a little bit wrong, but I like that she's had a jump out up straight since her last run, and Benny Mellon seemed to get her relaxed there. So, if she can just hold it together and get the first part of the race right, I think she'll be too strong late. So, that's our little all up for the day, Gareth, but certainly got a little bit more value on Stokes Day.
Speaker 2You're a jump out specialist and find horses that are heading to their maiden as well. So, what have you got for us this week, brother?
Speaker 14Well, Gareth, a bit of rinse and repeat here. We flagged up Strike Package a couple of weeks ago when we first spoke as possibly being a horse that we want to follow next time it goes around, and I must admit I've never pulled a horse's tail more than I did on Cup Day when this horse drew gate three. I thought I had no chance, and then I saw it darting through and nearly win, but look, I think he's probably the best maiden in Victoria, Gareth. I think wherever he goes next time, he's going to be awfully hard to beat, but I think he's going to be a really nice horse in the autumn. He's obviously a very well bred colt, $1.7 million wooden bass colt. So, he's a maiden horse to follow, Gareth, but one from the jump out that we definitely caught our eye this week was at Cranbourne on Monday, and it's Queen Peter. She's a four-year-old mare. She was originally with Graham Begg. She had two starts with him, and she trounced him in both starts, so you know how well Kieran Marr's going when you have a horse that's had two starts and it romps him both of them, and it gets taken off you and gets given to Kieran Marr, so she's had one jump out, Gareth, so whether she goes around again, but her work was super. She sat 4.5 wide the trip in that piece of work. She's quickened up beautifully, so she looks to return really well. So, she's a horse that we'll be following from the jump out.
Speaker 2So, that's Queen Peter. Was she sold? Obviously she won her first couple of starts. Was she sold?
Speaker 14Well, sometimes Ocean.com take a little while to update who owns them until they sort of spin around, but she looks to be in the same colours, so she won dominantly on in a maiden, and then she went up in class at her next start, and she won by six. So, that on a zone is very hard to do and this day and age, horses going from maiden grade and winning at the next start, but she won super impressively. She's had 17 or 18 weeks off, and that was her first official jump out that she had, but yeah, she hasn't digressed off her work, and whether she's had another one behind the scenes at Ballarat or somewhere, we don't know with this camp, but she looks to return really well, and she's got multiple riding points still up her sleeve.
Speaker 2All right, then anything else for us, mate, or that'll do us?
Speaker 14Well, there's a couple of roughies on stakes today, Gareth. I think in early markets, we're only halfway through the day, but I thought the Fisher Stakes, 1,200 metres up the Flemington Straight there, I know Humkey Alper drew the wrong part of the track last start and certainly was stiff, but the two horses I think that are big overs in the race are Eleven Photograph at $8 and De Bergerac at that $16. De Bergerac's drawn gates two and five. His last two goes up the Flemington Straight. He draws 16 here. He handles wet ground. I think he's just ready to win a race. I know he's probably frustrating horse for the punters, but he might just get the right set up this time, and I think Photograph, gate nine, wet grounds, and only giving the ground is going to be a bonus to what she's seen her last couple, and I think she's at that $8 mark. I don't think she should be twice the quote as horses like Incaruna and Co, who I think she was better than her the other day, and with a bit of stinging out the ground, she's certainly a bet we want to have each way. So, a bit of two. We'll be backing in there, and I think two down discreet can bounce back in race five. I think if you just put a line through her last start where she had a big weight, she had a throat issue, if she's come through that all right, she meets Somerato, seven kilos better at the weights this time, and if you take her off her run two back in the two rack, I think she's going super this time. So, each way here, tongue tie on, marks are on. There's a few ticks in her corner.
Speaker 2As Gator pointed out, he made her East D-Day horse today, but if she can breathe, she'll be mighty hard to beat. Two down discreet. Yeah, well. Yeah, Flemington, it does help in race number five. Hey, good on you, mate. Jig racing. We can go to jig racing. We can get all of your tips right across the country, not just in the thoroughbreds, but you've got a dog specialist as well. So, yep, keep on doing what you're doing, mate, and we appreciate you coming on.
Speaker 14Good on you, Gareth.
Speaker 2Cheers, mate. There's Josh McLaughlin there from Jig Racing. Now, thanks to Racing SA. Always great to catch up with this man, John Kelton. G'day, John. G'day, Gareth. How are you? How's your cut week been?
Speaker 15Yeah, we've been busy. We had a massive 10-event card at Morpheville on Tuesday. Terry McCall is out at Gawler today for Racing.com, and I'm heading over to Melbourne to film Get On SA.
Speaker 2All right, then. What did you make there of that Tuesday cup meeting at Morpheville with aerosol for the Gluis team taking out the John Letts Cup?
Speaker 15He's really made that race his own over the last few years. He's now won three of them. Dominant win last year. Probably not as dominant this year. But to be fair, his lead-up form into the race wasn't as good, and he did improve enough to win the race. So, yeah, well done to the Gluis team. I think he's won 10 races, and nine of them have been at stakes level. So, he's been an amazingly consistent performer at that grade.
Speaker 2We're on a good four at the moment. Do you think we'll stay at that range there come Saturday?
Speaker 15Yeah, most definitely. I'd say the track will be a little bit firmer than that. They did put a fair bit of irrigation on it yesterday, but I'd be thinking good three or something very similar. The parks track hasn't been used at all in the last few weeks. We've been exclusively on the main track. So, the parks track is entitled to be in really good nick. It's an interesting race
Speaker 2meeting to do your form on and try and get in some early prices because it sounds like, talking to J.D. Hayes, that Larder-Sharr and also Romantic Encounter, both favourites with bet 3-6-5, probably won't go there. So, yeah, it's interesting to see. Well, there's a chance they might not go there. They've been dual nominated for meetings at Arias. And also, wherever I think it is, or one of those other meetings, Romantic Encounter.
Speaker 15Yeah, that'll make it even trickier to do the form and obviously there'll be decent deductions. That Larder-Sharr race.
Speaker 2So long, I should say, Saturday for Romantic Encounter, yeah.
Speaker 15Yeah, Larder-Sharr's race, Race 7, is quite a decent standard race. There should be good speed in the race with horses like the Stalker and Powerbow in it. I reckon a few of the horses right down the bottom have got chances. Another house has been flying for Christy Evans. He's having a great prep. I reckon he'll be right around the mark. And Dobonair's probably one that might be sneaking under the radar a little bit right down the bottom at a price in that race.
Speaker 2Beautiful. All right, then, anything else for us, mate? What are you making your best there at the Parks Track on Saturday?
Speaker 15To be honest, I reckon a lot of the favourites at the meeting are very well found. I've found it really tough to select horses that are at the pointy end of the market at value. A couple that I think will be worth a play. Race 9, horse number 11, Ronnie B. I've seen him about four times here in South Australia. Every time he's run, he's run a great race. He's a really genuine horse. Not exactly sure the Parks is his track. I don't want to lose on him if he wins. He's a really good standard horse, and he's quite progressive. Another one in that race, horse number 6, Alpine Flyer, has got a very significant jockey change. Noel Callow goes on. He has been absolutely flying in SA, and the market is all over him when he jumps on a horse for the first time. Expect this horse to be really solid in the market. And on a quick backup, I reckon she'll run well in that race, number 6.
Speaker 2But Kim Healy as well. Noel Callow and Kim Healy, what a combination that is. $10. What a combination. Yes, yes. It's good to hang around the winner's bar if they have the time to get in there.
Speaker 15They'll have some stories between them.
Speaker 2100%. They've had some journey, those two. What else have you got for us? Anything else? A
Speaker 15couple of other interesting runners. Confucius Flyer in Race 8 had a cramp quote. I think he definitely deserves to be odds on. But he's been fantastic. He's only had two runs. It took him a while to get to the track due to injury. He did a tendon when he was younger. He absolutely flew last start when he won his maiden, and there's been good form already behind him. Not sure I could recommend him as a bet, but certainly one of the most interesting runners of the day, and I'm sure he'll be really hard to beat. And one that I would actually recommend as a bet is in Race 2, the maiden horse, number 9, Opal Heritage, another horse that gets Noel Callow going on. The Stokes Yard are. The Stokes Yard are excellent when they bring horses over from Victoria and run them in these maidens in SA. Blinker's going on, Callow going on. Jumpouts have been just fair, but I reckon she'll improve from that.
Speaker 2Opal Heritage, Race 2, number 9, around 650, and there's no stopping Noel Callow. He's become pretty quickly the king of SA racing. Unbelievable, really.
Speaker 15Yeah, he's definitely been the punter's pal, and yeah,
Speaker 2with four winners last Saturday, you can understand why. Good on you, John. Get on SA later tonight after Oaks Day. Thanks a lot. Cheers, guys. Cheers, John Kelton. Thanks to Racing SA. Time for a break. On the other side of it, it's unbelievable. Who would have thought this would ever happen, but the champ, David Taggart, he won the Oaks 31 years ago. It was 31-30. He's already complaining. I've got that wrong. 22 years ago, was it? Yeah. He's not that old. So the great man will be joining me in the studio next here on Giddy Up for his preview of Oaks Day. G'day, G. I recall a meeting with Tags at the Moonee Valley Trots when Tags was an apprentice. I asked him what he's riding away. He told me and said half of that was. I can't read that out. Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha. On that note, I'm going to take a break to regroup. And then the little master, David Taggart, will be in the house to go through his best bets. In fact, a race-by-race preview. I know it's hard to believe. He's working Thursday morning and Thursday afternoon. So the Tags have to join me next here on Giddy Up with his preview of VRC Oaks Day.
Speaker 1This is Giddy Up. With Gareth Hall. And it's Mango Dackery by two links.
Speaker 16Storm Alert and Carly Kwong. Hollow Bullet. Hetnawee's over the hill. She's in clear room now. But Mango Dackery, the leader. By a link. Carly Kwong. Storm Alert are coming after her. And then Hollow Bullet. Mango Dackery with a hundred to go. Clays at every stride at three-way go. Hollow Bullet lifting late. Storm Alert, Carly Kwong. Hollow Bullet. I think she's got there. Hollow Bullet by a no. What a run. Fantastic to beat over Carly Kwong.
Speaker 2What a run. What a ride. Great call from Greg Miles. The man that rode that horse 22 years ago. Hollow Bullet for Johnny McCarter was the captain of the SEN track team. The six-time Group 1 winning jock. The one and the only David Taggart. Tags. Tags, welcome to Giddy Up.
Speaker 17Thank you, Gary. Geez, I grabbed victory in the jaws of defeat there. You did. I don't get sick of hearing that call. You know what I loved about that victory? Small Oaks field and they just ganged up on me. They did. Yes, and what do you do?
Speaker 2You didn't panic, Bart.
Speaker 17No, like, depends who you talk to. Many say, ah, blah, blah, blah, but you can't go over the top of them. No. Right? And she had a tendency to over, she got herself heated right up and that was unlike a national anthem and that, totally different horse compared to the Wakeful and she actually over-raced for the first half mile and when horses pull their head off, usually they don't finish off and she did, but yeah, people say probably should have won by further, but there's not much you can do when you're getting ganged up. up on and I also say many jocks wouldn't have won on it too because I did swap the whip from right to left and And that's one of the race. Like, you look at the 06 Melbourne Cup, the two Japanese horse fighting it out. And Ollie, all he had to do was swap the whip to the left hand. He would have won another Melbourne Cup, in my opinion.
Speaker 2So you drive by in the greatest jockey nearly of all time, D.
Speaker 17Oliver. No, he's running second at JMAC, is he not? Okay, that's a good point. And talking about your little buddy.
Speaker 2He tried to get your beat there, didn't he, Ollie? It was great. Yeah, and Nick Lick. It was a great ride. And Nick Lick.
Speaker 17So as soon as the gates opened, Ollie went, because I drew in, Ollie went straight across and sat straight outside me within the first 100 metres. Were you yelling at him? No, no. He must have thought I was George Clooney, I was that good looking. He looked at me on a half a dozen occasions. Yeah, yeah. And Nick Lick tracked him up all the way on Kylie Kwong. And they actually got going a little bit early. I hit a flat spot once she did get out when I tried to get over their heels. And I thought, oh, well, she hasn't stayed. She's over-raced. And then once I swapped the whip from right to left, because she had a tendency to get in, I got a flat spot. That's when she really picked up and hit the line. And the only time she was in front was at the winning post. And that's where you have to be.
Speaker 2100%. I was proud of you then, back then, Tags. I didn't know you.
Speaker 17Well, clearly, you have no idea. You were cornered 31 years ago. No, I was only trying to see if you were listening. That's all. Oh, okay.
Speaker 2Hey, race one at Flemington today as we go through your best bets. Well, not your best bets, but your selections in every race.
Speaker 17Who's the lead? So race one. Who's the lead singer of Police? I'm not a great music man. Sting? Yes. So if he dies, he'll be recognized as Sting then, won't he? Yeah, yes. So number two, Sting.
Speaker 2All right. So $10 each way for Lindsay Park.
Speaker 17Yeah. And I think Illy Ivy, number six, can run a huge race at around about 25 to one.
Speaker 2She's your girl, isn't she, Illy Ivy? No, she goes all right. What about Autumn?
Speaker 17She's named after Ray's mother. Yes. Ivy, I mean.
Speaker 2Sorry. Yeah. What about Autumn Slide?
Speaker 17She'll have to be a chance, but I think there could be a blow over, and that could be Sting or Illy Ivy.
Speaker 2So race one, you're playing the numbers two and six. Yeah. All right. Then we move on to race. Number two, and this is the Grey's race. You're not the king. You are the king, but that's the horse's name. You're not the king at 280 for Bjorn Baker. And Rachel King.
Speaker 17Selling that horse, the Melbourne Cowboy. What was he thinking? He was three and a half million. Yeah. He's won it all back now.
Speaker 2Yeah. Do you think he's a superstar point of law? Looks like it, doesn't he? He does. Alabama Fox 380, Keitel, the Queenslander at eight. I reckon Bustling will run a race today at 11.
Speaker 17I've got her on top. Who? I've got him on top. Bustling. Jeez. 1,400, soft ground. We're on a soft five. We're on perfect conditions. Have they forgotten about number one, Sav on Ice?
Speaker 2I think they have.
Speaker 17If he brings his A game, he can run all right.
Speaker 2He's $41, David.
Speaker 17Yeah, he's 50 to 100, depending where you shop.
Speaker 2Well, we shop at about 365, so he's $41. Yeah. Yes. Sav on Ice. Garrett Lynch is a good trainer as well. Very good. Yes. So we're going to play those two horses. Three of the Chester Manifold stakes. Ferocci at $5, Tavi Time at $3.60, Enzuno at $5, Encap at $6.50, Harry's Yacht at $7, Pinstriped at $15, Revolari at $19, Craig at $23, and then the Tasmanian horse, Cartoon Graveyard at $23.
Speaker 17Well, this is one of my best bets. The top of you, Ferocci. Ferocci, Ferocci, for Johnny Kanga. Yeah. This horse is a three-year-old group one winner in the autumn, right? Lucky over the course. Just put a line through his last two runs. He's drawn. The car park. He draws perfectly today. And what about his first run? Sorry. It was 2.3 off Cosmic Crusader. Yes. And Private Eye. That is huge form. If he brings that form, he wins this race. This is a huge drop in grade. I got $7.50 about him yesterday. He's now in the $5, all thanks.
Speaker 2Has he forgotten how to win, Ferocci?
Speaker 17Don't know. I just think he's drawn. The barriers cost him a lot. Billy Egan, I think. Zara takes it right. I think Billy's a bit stiff not to. Yeah. Well, they've sacked him, haven't they, off him? So I'm a bit stiff.
Speaker 2Craig McRae's in the ownership as well. Yeah, he's flying. Yeah. Did you read the paper today? John Kanga nominates to join the Victorian Racing Club board.
Speaker 17Yeah, how good.
Speaker 2Are you a member of the VRC? No. So you can't vote for him, of course.
Speaker 17As soon as Kanga gets in, I will be, though. All right, then. Only rate four group one winners at Flemington.
Speaker 2So Kanga there. Do you know who else I'm hearing on the grapevine that'll be going? Trying to get elected on the board? You. No, not me. One of the great publicans of all time, Andy Lewis. Andy Lewis. The male is. Ah. There you go.
Speaker 17Yes, he's very opinionated on the topic.
Speaker 2Yeah, because you used to join him a few times at the Emerald, didn't you?
Speaker 17Yeah, 100%. And he's an ideas man, and what he says is correct. All right. Yes, yes, yes.
Speaker 2We might get them in. You know, we might get you to be the compere. You know when you get all of the candidates, like the presidential election, and ask them the tough question? Yeah, nah. Yeah, I reckon you'd be great. What race are we up to? Race four. Race four.
Speaker 17Favourite wins are done at Sassapule.
Speaker 2Yeah, $1.60 short enough. Yeah. Polymnia was pretty good.
Speaker 17Yeah, that's a danger. That's the only danger.
Speaker 2What about five ball miss for the all-conquering Marr camp? Why can't she run a race?
Speaker 17Because it won't beat Sassapule.
Speaker 2Miss Playlounge? No.
Speaker 17No. I just think Polymnia is the only danger. Yeah. Because that guides me.
Speaker 2Race number five.
Speaker 17Well, this is. It's a good thing of the day, isn't it? Perisher. Yeah. Well, I know your regular Mick Gannon, he was tipping it the other day. And when it was at a price, well, when I say a price, what, $2.30 or whatever? Yeah. Well, he's well into the tomato sauce now, isn't he?
Speaker 2Who's a better bet, Perisher or Sassapule at the prices?
Speaker 17Take the double. All right. VIP, $4.60. Big chance. Forget he went around last start. Yeah. He pulled up with a slow recovery rate. So he's a handy horse VIP. Yeah. I'm not sure if he's up to Perisher, but if he wins, there'll be no surprise.
Speaker 2I thought Nobler was a chance. Definitely a place chance at $2.10. Was pretty good against. Perisher the other day.
Speaker 17Yeah. Well, Jay Mack, he had the option, didn't he, of which rides and he chose Perisher.
Speaker 2He doesn't always get it right. No. Different gravy.
Speaker 17Unlike, well, I'll let him off to ride another one though.
Speaker 2Yes. Yes. Different gravy, $19.
Speaker 17Yeah. Over the odds. I'd like to see Jerome Hunter get the Quinella there. Bell Mays in and out just to fight.
Speaker 2Well, in the Country Cup Carnival, still up to race five. Oh, sorry, mate. Different gravy, $19 out of that race, Fandry Dwyer. Not against Perisher and VIP. All right, then. The Country Cup Carnival. Carnival, the Cup Carnival Country Final. Sulak at $4.40 for Dom Sutton.
Speaker 17Big chance. Yeah.
Speaker 2Bell Mays aren't at $6.50. I'd justify $7.50. With Tumpka at $8 or $9. What do you like here?
Speaker 17Yeah. I think, hopefully, the Jerome Hunter Quinella. Bell Mays in, I'd justify. Now, I'm leaning towards out, justify, just due to the fact that Stackhouse chooses it to ride over Bell Mays in. What has he done there? He rode them both. He rode. Bell Mays in, win first up. Yes. Yeah. Both at Bendigo, they won, different days. But he's chosen to ride our Justify. So, that's the lead in there, looking at the jockey change.
Speaker 2So, do you take that into consideration or not? You have to.
Speaker 17You have to. Yeah. Like, Froggy's a lightweight rider as well. So, it's got nothing to do with the weight. To me, I think he's chosen. Same trainer, same owners. So, I think Stacky would have had the option. Because I don't think Jerome wouldn't care which one he rode.
Speaker 2No. There's a few other horses that we need to have a chat about.
Speaker 17Four, five, nine, and 13 quaddie numbers. Four, five, nine, and 13.
Speaker 2What about, what about Rose Adaroa? The Reece Goodwin train man that's been all supported. It's in the quaddie. Is it in the quaddie? He's eliciting Reece as well.
Speaker 17Yeah. He's got to learn to train a little bit, doesn't he? Yeah, I think. No, he does a great job. I think he's a very, very good trainer. Does a great, yeah, up and coming.
Speaker 2Do you give Yam an opportunity to win this race? Very good the other day, first up.
Speaker 17Yeah. I just see. I think a little bit outclassed. He's got to carry the top weight. As I said, four, five, nine, and 13.
Speaker 2All right. Then Sir Quinn, is it a good thing at $1.85 down the straight?
Speaker 17No. Why not? Have a look at scintillations. Clearly the danger.
Speaker 2Barry, two down the straight. Yeah, that's a conundrum, right?
Speaker 17Of course, we've seen the first two days have been coming down the outside. Of course, on the grandstand when we have those sprint races. But scintillation, I know it draws the wrong part of the straight. We'll need a piece. Pete from Zach will be no surprise if she wins, though.
Speaker 2Calamari Ring in the same race?
Speaker 17No. It's either Sir Quinn or scintillation for me. I like semantics each way. Yeah, okay. Okay.
Speaker 2Race eight, Proxima Dea in the Oaks.
Speaker 17Wrecking Oaks in the, I've just gone the top four in the, sorry, last race, two and three, only ones I've got in the quaddie. I've got the top four, but I do like the Armis. Okay. As we said earlier, J-Max, he's next. Blake Shinn. I don't know if he's done that. I think he was always booked for Waller in the Oaks. So what happens with this? The pace set it up the other day. There's going to be good pace on in this Oaks. There are many horses that'll go forward. I don't know what Zach's going to do with, on the favourite, Proxima Dea. What would you do? Well, it all depends what instructions you're going to get. I know he knows the horse. It's undefeated. I don't think they're going to ride a cold like Stormy Marco, but they may, they may also just due to the fact there's a lot of pace in this race. And it's going to set up for the Armis who does no work. Um, and the way it won the other day was entitled to get run down. Blake rode a treat throughout. He was worse than midfield, but he's hit the front of the top of the straight. I think he went a tad too early on it and still held off all challenges. So I think she'll stay. That's a quick finish. You'll get the 2,500.
Speaker 2Hey, I'll get the rest of your numbers for the Oaks in just a moment. We'll take a quick break and then I'll recap your numbers in the VRC. straight after this. It's a privilege and honour to have David Taggart, the man that won the Oaks 22 years ago in the studio on Giddy Up. A lot of love for the great man and the tagster.
Speaker 17Tag squaddy. Top four picks. Hey, don't listen to all of the, don't read all the text messages. Didn't I give Savon Ice a push at 50s? You did, David. Illy Ivy at 25. That's all right.
Speaker 2I apologise for.
Speaker 17What would you do? You just, we're going to throw in 50 to one pops all the time. I just want you to find winners.
Speaker 2I don't care what price.
Speaker 17Thank you. But as I said, I like the Armis in the Oaks. Yes. I've gone one, two, three, four in the quaddie, but I have taken her one out as well in another one.
Speaker 2Yep. Quick finish.
Speaker 17Well, she's got to be respected, doesn't she? She ran third in the derby. You know, she'll get the trip and she.
Speaker 2What do you think of Mr. Zhang's name for her?
Speaker 17It's very, very well named, isn't it? Very smart for Mr. Zhang. Do you reckon he named it? Doubt it. I've thrown in Ice Lady. I don't think she'll get the trip. That's my concern with Ice Lady.
Speaker 2Well, she was, she was given a test there over 2000 the other day. If she's left alone, like she was attacked.
Speaker 17Yeah. Never had no rest for the wicked.
Speaker 2You would have been yelling at, who was the lucky king, I think.
Speaker 17Yeah, he was on the hundred to one pop or something.
Speaker 2Yeah, you would have been yelling at him, wouldn't you, back in the day? What would you have said if you were Zara? Not for radio.
Speaker 17Not for radio.
Speaker 2Then there might've been a bit of
Speaker 17dwarf throwing back in the room.
Speaker 2Yeah, yes, yes, yes. Did you ever get in a blue in the jockey's room? Nah. No. You're a lover, not a fighter. I was respected. I was respected. So Ice Lady can run a race gear quick finish by growing out of gentle strokes. And then we go to the last race with bet three, six, five. Good little race as well. Ray McNeary, 280. Bev's nine. Johnny O'Shea. Keenan. Keenan. He'd raced in this race last year. Bev's nine chance at 350. I think he did. He did. Yep. Ice Cool 650 on Foxing at $9. Don't Hope Do at $12. Stoke was very good the other day at 13. Landmark at 16. Marble Nine at 29. And Philosopher, that's what you are at 40 to one. Even we got Joanne, all right, texting. She's got AI. I think she's from Kilmore, Joanne. Yeah. She put all of the form in her AI set up and purely is fighter. How's Lee going?
Speaker 17Who? The Geelong. The AI, what do you mean? No, no, no. But one of our listeners, Lee, she's outstanding. Oh, yes, yes, yes, yes.
Speaker 2Geez. You've got ADHD like me, haven't you? We'll just change the conversation.
Speaker 17She was ripped. Well, yeah. Yeah. Lee's, um. I actually was meant to say, uh, give her a cheerio and not forget all about it. So I do apologize.
Speaker 2Lee from, um, she won the competition. She saw you in Geelong.
Speaker 17Yeah, hopefully she's listening.
Speaker 2She's a big fan of yours, Tay. She got a selfie with you. Yes. Someone told me the other day that they're. Yes. Never seen like a, um, a person get stopped for selfies. Like you do. How many selfies did you take the other day?
Speaker 17I reckon, uh, over the two days, it's gotta be close to a hundred.
Speaker 2You're more popular than Robbie Williams.
Speaker 17Yeah. Yeah. Um, I'm loving angels instead.
Speaker 2Yes. Yes. So who are you tipping in the last?
Speaker 17Well, Ray's clearly the, the, the best horse in the race. He's a class galloper. Bev's nine. We'll find this easier too. I'm with him. Um, first time down the straight. Yeah. That's the concern. The value runner is of course, don't hope do of course, in double figures. I went one, three, seven, eight, 11, one, three, seven, eight, 11, $160.
Speaker 2My quality. So can we just start that again with the quality leg
Speaker 17one, four, five, nine, and 13.
Speaker 2So four, five, nine, and 13. Yes. Like two, two and three, two and three.
Speaker 17Yep. One, two, three, four.
Speaker 2Like three, one, two, three, and you can take number four,
Speaker 17one out for, uh, for a higher
Speaker 2value in the Oaks. And then like four, like three, like four.
Speaker 17Yeah. But, uh, number four, you can take number four as a extra. Yeah. One out. Cause, and then it costs you a quarter of the amount and, uh, one, three, seven, eight, 11, one, three, seven, eight, 11.
Speaker 2If Zach Lloyd's listening to the show right now, how would you, what advice would you give the young man riding a short price
Speaker 17favorite in the Oaks?
Speaker 2Who's the trainer of it?
Speaker 17Um, uh, David Payne. Yeah. Um, be up to him, the South African. Yeah. The two South Africans are combining.
Speaker 2Do you listen to anyone when you rode the favorite in the Oaks? Do you give it, you get instructions or you.
Speaker 17I'd won on her a couple of times prior and ridden her in the thousand guineas. And I won her on the wakeful in the wakeful, a three barrier, one or two. And, and I said to John, I will box seat. He goes, yeah, do that. And, uh, she came out, as I said, she was a totally different horse, uh, than, uh, on, on Oaks day and she couldn't get going early. And I was back third last and just, I never went around a horse. Basically I went around a couple, but that's about it. I just waved me way up on along the fence and, and she bolted in best bets there, ferocious, ferocious, the armistice in the Oaks. They might too tough. It's a tough meeting there. Like I'm not, I'm not tipping the two odds on pops. Anyone can do that, but, um, it wouldn't surprise me if the queen had got that.
Speaker 2And your best value, seven ice in the grades, right?
Speaker 17Yeah. Well, Ellie, Ivy, I've got 50 to one, uh, all our place back with them.
Speaker 2All right. Then, um, one of my favorite footballers at the giants, he's a bloody superstar. Great racing man. Jake Riccardi is listening. Yes. Um, Nishia. Nishia Oka for Robbie Griffiths. Can it beat sequined $13?
Speaker 17He wants to know. No. Well, I've only gotten those two. Okay. Yep. So no. Yeah. Well, no.
Speaker 2All right. A few questions coming through. Well, Gary, Gary, I'll give me two more minutes. Fish boy wants to know George Hanlon. You wrote for him in the nineties. I'm sent time to win a good wood handicap.
Speaker 17Bob Peters is owned.
Speaker 2Yeah. He's about to join us, Bob.
Speaker 17Well, ask him for my sling. I'm still waiting for it.
Speaker 2Oh, then I'll ask him. Yeah. So how long ago was that? 90. Five. Beautiful.
Speaker 17All right then.
Speaker 2And good luck with your punting in the punters club today.
Speaker 17Thank you. Bet we're grateful. We're even after three days.
Speaker 2So you've got two more days to win. Yeah. Are you confident?
Speaker 17Hopefully. Yeah. Today's today. I won't be having many bets, but when we do, we'll have a crack.
Speaker 2Don't listen to anyone as well. It's your, it's your. I realize that, but
Speaker 17I include, you know, I include other people's as well.
Speaker 2It's your, it's your punters club. The people that are in the group. Don't bet with fear. Just bet with confidence and believe the tagster. All right, then go and get them today. Go on. Someone's. You should charge a dollar for a selfie if you're having that many selfies.
Speaker 17No, it's good. I enjoy it. Someone else wants my quaddie. They couldn't write it down quick enough. So repeat that, Gary. All right. It's all up on the quaddie app anyway.
Speaker 2Four, nine, four, five, nine, 13, first league, two and three, second league, one, two, three, four, third league, one, three, seven, eight and 11. The final league tags. You can go and waddle off. You legend. Make sure. Have a good day punters. How are you getting there? Train or car? Automobile. Okay. Have they got a car park for you? Yeah. Please. You wouldn't turn up if they didn't. Time for a break. Time for a break. We'll come back with plenty more next. What a love for the tagger law. What hair product is the? Great man news. I'll ask. I'll get that confirmed. It's great to see tags on camera. Get him on once a week. That's from Robbo. Hey, Robbo, that's what I want to do, but I've got to talk to his management. I've already asked Hutchie if he could make sure that they could put that into his contract where he joins us on Giddy Up once a week. And if you keep on sending the love on the Gareth's horse and hand text line, he will see it and he will probably want to come back. So if you want more of tags on Giddy Up, let us know and I'll make sure I screenshot all of the text messages. And there's a few that have come in now and we'll get him on once a week. Congrats to the old man for not tipping those two short five prize favorites. Like he said, any mug can tip that. Yes. What else have we got? Stoke beat Major Cher in this race last year. He did. Thanks for that. Gareth takes best man to hire for a sportsman lunch deer by the strength, the length of the Flemington. Straight. So yeah, he's very entertaining takes at sportsman's lunch at a sportsman's lunch. So I'll get to all that. There's a lot of love for the tags to hear. 10 minutes past 11 is time now as we continue on the Thursday form lounge. And Chris Nelson joins us. Chris, hello to you.
Speaker 18Good morning to you, Gareth. He is wherever he goes. Tags is good. Good value, isn't he?
Speaker 2He is. Sometimes, depending on what mood he's in. But most of the time, he's pretty good, Chris, eh? Yes, that's true. Eagle Farm Saturday. What are we thinking?
Speaker 18Eagle Farm Saturday. We'll have a good track. It's very warm up here. Mid-30s at the moment. Not so tomorrow. Back to 26 or so. Maybe a shower around Saturday, but they're saying zero to two mils. So that won't make any difference to Eagle Farm. We'll start off with a bit of value. Race two, horse number five, ready for the trip. I think he's ready to win, and he's a good price. His last two runs. His run two back was exceptional. He ran second here at Eagle Farm behind Japanese. Sat three wide, no cover the entire trip, and stuck it out really well. Was beaten, what, officially three quarters of a length on the line. Then he backed up at Eagle Farm a couple of weeks later. Again, he was caught wide. So he had no luck from gate 12 of 12. He didn't stick on as well this time around. He did fold up in the straight. But look, that was to be expected after the run. Now, he draws gate five of nine on Saturday. Really wouldn't expect him to get caught wide. Daniel Moore jumps on. And I don't think this field's anything flash at all. If he's going to win one, this could be it, ready for the trip. So I'm more than happy to back him each way. That's race two, horse number five. Race three, we'll go with number five again here, and that is YesDonaldYes. Now, I have tipped him a couple of times recently. He's been racing well without winning. He's second at the Gold Coast behind Exceed Perfection, was very good three starts back. Even effort at the Sunny Coast, but he's third at Eagle Farm, I thought was very good last start on a heavy nine, which isn't his go at all. Yet he stuck it out really well to the line. He was beaten just under a length and a half. Did race wide. That probably didn't make a lot of difference on the heavy nine, but look, you know, it was a chance that he wouldn't handle that at all. But he's going that well. He did, and I think he's got a good chance on Saturday. So we'll stick with him. That's race three, number five, YesDonaldYes. Now, race seven, really interesting race. I'm going with King of Pop, number one, who's a newcomer to the Tony Golan stable recently. Third at Eagle Farm, first run for the yard back in October, the 10th of October, had no luck at all whatsoever, was well supported. The trials have been okay. Just needed a run in the straight to get a crack at them. Couldn't get that run, had to come across heels, go wider on the track and then finished off really well. Last 200 meters, best in the race. So a phenomenal performance. He's been kept nice and fresh. Now, a couple of others in here with chances. Number four, Incognito, of course, he's got some really good two year old form. So I need to keep an eye on Incognito and military tycoon. Number nine, he's got some decent form down south. Around seventh in a lightning. And fifth in a Moomba plate. Fourth in a Mick Dittman up here. So there's a couple there with good form, but how well they're going remains to be seen. I'll stick with King of Pop. It was, as I said, very, very unlucky not to win. First local start a few weeks ago. -
Speaker 2Former Snowden runner, King of Pop. -
Speaker 18Yes, he is a former Snowden runner. Yeah, and he wasn't going at all well until he got up here. His four runs prior had been pretty ordinary, even in average races. So we know Tony's got a habit of turning these interstate horses around. I think he'll do it again here with King of Pop. -
Speaker 2Hey, anything at Ipswich today? -
Speaker 18Yeah, race four, number one, Canadian Fling should jump on the bunny and prove very hard to run down. Race five, number four, Dutchess Difficult. Good win and a maiden last time out. I think the step-up in grades are quite capable of this mare to do, or this filly to do. So race five, number four, Dutchess Difficult can make it two in a row. And if you're asking me for an Oakes tip, and I know you would, Gareth, I'll go with Diamus. I thought that win last week was very, Saturday was very, very impressive. -
Speaker 2'Cause you've been a big fan of Proxima Dei, I reckon, if I can recall. -
Speaker 18No, not me. I think I've taken her on every single time. - Okay, there you go. - So here we go again. And I'll probably end up with egg on my face once again, but why jump on now? -
Speaker 2Yes, that's a good point you make. I knew you were, I knew you were for or against. I took it apart and I got it wrong. Which is unlike me. - Not often you get it wrong. - No, no. Good on you, Chris. I enjoy Oakes day, mate. - Thanks, Gareth. Yeah, you too. There's Chris Delson. This is the Thursday Form Lounge. It's 15 minutes past 11. The Thursday Form Lounge, thanks to the Rising Sun Hotel in South Melbourne, backing winners with premium steaks, high quality service and the thrill of every race day. Time for a break. Hopefully Bob Peters will be joining me next. -
Speaker 1Join the conversation. Text us on 049-736-736. - This is Giddea with Gareth Hall. -
Speaker 2Welcome back to Giddea. It was Orion and Alexio run at King of Pop. You are right with this. How can I get that wrong? Yeah, now with Tony Golan. I reckon he was back in the early days of his career. He was a star two year old and he went to Canberra for the Black Opal and he won defending far side. And then he became one of the favourites there for the Golden Slipper and he was okay behind Mahuna, but he hasn't found that type of form. That type of form since basically. And as Chris Nelson pointed out, he was pretty good first up there in Queensland for Tony Golan at Eagle Farm there. And he'll be tough to beat come Saturday. You can tune into Racing WA TV on 7plusandracing.com, the ultimate destination for everything racing in the West. And Bob Peters joins us here on Giddea Up Now. Of course, Cosmic Crusader looks mighty hard to beat once again in the champion stakes at Flemington on Saturday. Bob, hello to you. - Yeah, good morning. - Bob, we had our little mate David Taggart who joins us. So he's part of the SEN Track, SEN Turf, RSN family. And it was a rare treat. He came in to do that preview of the Oaks meeting just before. And he was telling us that he rode a group one winner for you for George Hanlon in a Goodwood in the nineties. Was it a good ride? Can you recall it, Bob? -
Speaker 19Yeah, no, he did. He rode very well that day. - Yeah. - I think there was another day when he didn't. But anyway, that was a good ride. - That was a good ride. -
Speaker 2He goes to me, "Can you ask Uncle Bob for the sling?" I said, "Well, it's probably a good race." He didn't give you the sling. And now, he didn't tell us the day that he rode it badly, Bob. -
Speaker 19No, no, that's all right. -
Speaker 2How is your superstar Cosmic Crusader? -
Speaker 19He's good. I just spoke to Andrew a little while ago. And he's good at the moment. -
Speaker 2Yeah. He just seems to be this iron horse, Bob. -
Speaker 19Yeah. - Yes, yes, he seems to be able to handle things well, doesn't he? He seems to run even better when he races Saturday to Saturday. So, he might be telling us he needs more. -
Speaker 2Yes, yes. So, he's had that few weeks off since the Cox Plate. Can you get any guy, when you talk to Andrea and the amount of work that you do with him, and you know him better than anyone from the reports that Andrea gives you, do you think he could be even better? Than what he was there on Cox Plate day? -
Speaker 19No, I don't think he could be better. - No. - If he's as good, I'll be happy. - Yeah. - But I think it'll be a completely different race. We were a bit lucky on Cox Plate day that they went so fast early. - Yeah. - And that played into our hands very well. But we've drawn a bad barrier again, which isn't going to help. We didn't, I think he's had seven or eight runs there and drawed one decent barrier. So, it's. It makes
Speaker 2it hard work. - It does, but you say there won't be any pace. I guess the three-year-olds take out the early sting, like in the Cox Plate, they put in the early pressure into that race, but you've still got Light Inventory Man and Land Legend. Land Legend might get crossed from that gate, so who knows where he will be, 'cause he's not that quick out. He's drawn towards the inside, I think, four. But there should be enough pace surely then, Bob, especially if you've got a horse like Light Inventory Man in that race. -
Speaker 19Oh, no, there'll be pace, but there wouldn't be, I don't think there'd be a frantic pace like there was last time. -
Speaker 2I think the big advantage as well for your boy, looks like there's going to be some rain during the day there, Bob. -
Speaker 19Yeah, that's good. What about tomorrow? Is there much, any forecast for then? -
Speaker 2No, I think it's pretty clear. So, I reckon today it'll be okay, and then no rain tomorrow. But it's been a busy time for Flemington since Cox Plate Day, and then the three days leading up towards Saturday, for the carnival. But if the rain does come, we talked to Liam O'Keefe just before, he goes it'll be a soft to a heavy track.
Speaker 19So, yeah, it should suit him anyway. - Well, Flemington handles it very well now since it's been rebuilt. Like all these tracks are done now. In my opinion, they're built for similar conditions to Singapore and Hong Kong. Remember, it was a very wet day, one race that he ran back there, and the track was. It kept being upgraded all day. -
Speaker 2Yeah, that's right. I think that was when he won the Turnbull, I reckon. I reckon that was today. - But if it rains during the meeting, it can be, it can cut up because obviously the horses are galloping on it, and it's the end of the carnival. So, yeah, it's gonna be rain effective regardless, but you're happy with him. Andrew is happy with him, and he hasn't gone backwards anyway, Bob. -
Speaker 19No, no, if anything, he looks as good as he's looked, all the way through, what I've seen of him. -
Speaker 2Yeah, and you coming down again, or across? -
Speaker 19Yes, I'll be there again, I have to, you know. -
Speaker 2Yeah, you've got plenty of-- - Same position. - Yes, you won't be missing out, and back at Flemington, too, so. And he loves Flemington, Bob. What a record he's got at this track. -
Speaker 19That's right, and I've been there each time, so I have to go again. -
Speaker 2Yeah, 100%. How's Sandra's leg, is she ready to go, or is she still on the sidelines? -
Speaker 19Oh, she's sitting outside, the Hollywood Medical Center, and she's going to have an injection shortly,
Speaker 2so we'll see how that goes. - Okay, see if she can pass the fitness test, 'cause-- -
Speaker 19Yeah, I think she'll need more than this injection, but we'll see. -
Speaker 2Hey, and then obviously, like that fight, I don't know, you might, I had to talk to Sam Freeman about this, Bob, and he goes, "See what you can do, Gareth," and then I was thinking, I don't know if I've got much power these days, but you definitely do, Bob. Why is the plane leaving Sydney and not Melbourne when most of the horses heading to the carnival are out of Melbourne? -
Speaker 19I don't know. I think it's something to do with the plane that they've been able to get. I'd say that's the problem. - Yeah. - Hopefully they can get all the horses floated together, and I think they have to overnight in Sydney, and then get on the plane and come over. -
Speaker 2Yeah, it's not ideal, really, is it, Bob? Or it doesn't bother your horse? -
Speaker 19No, no. Oh, no, it's not ideal at all. - No. - I'd much prefer straight out of Melbourne. -
Speaker 2Yeah. Surely, like if they're chartering a flight, I can't understand. I might have to have a chat to Chris Calford, but I can't understand. Because it could be, that could change the mind of a few of the connections that were thinking of going to Perth. Because that 10 hours on a flight, then you've got to muck around a little bit and then you've got to fly over to Perth. So it's not easy on them, is it?
Speaker 19No, it's not. And then I don't think they can afford to have two planes. That's the problem. And so then the Sydney ones would have to come down to Melbourne, wouldn't they?
Speaker 2Yeah, yeah. And that's a good point. But I think most of the horses that I've looked at anyway are coming out of Melbourne anyway, out of the carnivals in Melbourne.
Speaker 19And the big stables would have them down to their own stable in Melbourne in time to go.
Speaker 2Yeah. And so I think, well, if there's more horses out of Melbourne than Sydney, then the plane leaves from Melbourne. I think that would be the question. That would make sense. Yeah. Regardless. So you'll get him home, you'll have a look at him, and then you'll make your mind up for the northerly. Is that how you approach it?
Speaker 19Oh, that's how we approach everything. If he's not right, we've said that right from the start. The minute he's not right, we stop.
Speaker 2You had a good day there on Saturday. I want to ask you about your runners on Saturday, this Saturday, however. A BC race too looks a lovely race there.
Speaker 19Yes, he's got a bit of weight, but that distance and everything suits him. Hopefully he can go well.
Speaker 2What about Wheelie in race seven?
Speaker 19Wheelie's a bit of a project horse. He likes to get his own way a bit, but he's coming better. And I think the race suits him, the distance suits him. So he's got his chance.
Speaker 2And Forever Boy in Acadia Park in the last race, or race eight there at Ascot on Saturday.
Speaker 19Yeah, well, they're not going as well as I'd hoped they'd go. But maybe. We'll have to give them a little bit of extra distance or help and then we'll know what we're going to do with them.
Speaker 2Yeah, and so it's D-Day for both those horses, in a way?
Speaker 19Well, we haven't got many options over here. We have to sort of, you know, look at their level and then work out what we're going to do with them.
Speaker 2Yeah. On Saturday, I know she was defeated by another one of your horses, but she's like clockwork was very good, Bob.
Speaker 19Well, yes, it didn't look that good to the eye. But when you looked at the times afterwards, I think she ran just nearly the same as the mare that won the race. And she went wide. So it was quite a good run.
Speaker 2And Western Miss, that was unbelievable, really. You have to actually watch that race to believe that she actually won. So if you walked away at the 400, if you walked away at the 200, you thought you were no chance, Bob. But she was unbelievable to. Get herself out of that trouble, along with Chris Parnham.
Speaker 19Well, yeah, he was a bit surprised, too. I think I looked at where she was and I looked at, as you said, about the 200. And I thought, oh, well, she's going to run a nice race and she might even run into a place. But she got there.
Speaker 2Yeah, she's a mare by Gaith. Is she, outside of Cosmic Crusader, the most exciting horse that you've got there in WA, Bob?
Speaker 19Oh, I think so, yes. You know, she's from that. A good family, the Western family. So, you know, and she's by a good stallion and she's performing well.
Speaker 2Yeah, and she's out of Western Pride. Is she a railway horse, Bob, if you can get her there?
Speaker 19Oh, that's a big step, but we'll see how she goes next start.
Speaker 2And this is a good question from one of our listeners. Can you ask Bob if this is the strongest Perth racing has been for quite a long time? It seems to be flying at the moment. And there seems to be some new talent as well. Some younger trainers coming through the race. Thanks, Bob. And putting their hand up like a Mitchell Pateman.
Speaker 19Yes, they seem to be improving the horses, don't they?
Speaker 2Yeah. But it seems Perth racing and the quality of thoroughbred there, it seems to be in a good place at the moment. Bob, would that be fair?
Speaker 19Oh, I'd say so. It's not easy to win a race here now.
Speaker 2No, no. Hey, if I gave you $100, what would you do with it this weekend?
Speaker 19Uh, let me think. I'd say Abyssi.
Speaker 2All right. Race two, number one. I'm looking forward to seeing you at Flemington. I reckon Fisher. You know who Fisher is, Bob? Who? Fisher. He's the entertainment there on Saturday, mate. Liam would know who he was. He's one of the great DJs. I reckon if you get Sandra's leg right, she'll be dancing. He's entertaining. So if Cosmic Crusader wins. We'll see you on the dance floor, Bob.
Speaker 19Oh, I doubt that. You might see me on the way to the plane. Talking about planes, they've changed the flight from Melbourne too. The plane comes home in about an hour. It takes off about an hour and a quarter earlier than normal. So I might get stuck.
Speaker 2Yeah. So when do you come? Saturday or Friday?
Speaker 19I come Friday.
Speaker 2And then go home Saturday night? Or Sunday morning. Yeah, Sunday morning. Well, you probably could afford your own flight. I mean, your own plane these days, Bob. So if you win, your males will just continue to celebrate. Go back whenever you want. No, no. No, no. There's no idea of that. Thank you. Good on you, mate. There's Bob Peters there. 29 minutes past 11. It's essay time coming up next here on Giddy Up. Welcome back to Giddy Up Time for essay time. And you can check out dare2dream.com.au where the next champion racehorse could be yours. This is the Thursday Form Lounge as well. Essay time, part of the Thursday Form Lounge. It's all thanks to the Rising Sun Hotel in South Melbourne, backing winners with premium steaks, high quality service and the thrill of every race day. Lincoln Moore's been brilliant. And he joins us now. Of course, from Racing Essay.
Speaker 20G'day, Lincoln. Gareth, how are you, mate?
Speaker 2Looking forward to catching up with Joe Gluis. And the Gluis team, well, they dominate the John Letts Cup, don't they? And they won it again with Air Assaults.
Speaker 20Yeah, absolutely. What a story that was on Tuesday. Air Assault 3 straight in the feature. He's been a marvel. He got past the million dollar barrier in years. Just made that race his own over the last three years. Outstanding training and effort, too, to get him back from that coonjie to win that Adelaide feature.
Speaker 2Today, you've got some runners there representing South Australia in Oaks Day. A fair view for Jamie Mellon riding for old boss Johnny McMillan in the first race. Yes. And an each-way price.
Speaker 20Yeah, Johnny was the man that gave Jamie her first job. And she was apprenticed to him very early on. So they go back a long way. And look, a fair view goes over there in pretty good form, too. He's certainly the pennies dropped with this horse this time around. And he put together some consistently. Consistent form. So it'll be exciting for everyone involved. All connections, obviously, to have a runner on Oaks Day is always a thrill. And, yeah, the old band's back together.
Speaker 2Yeah, fair view. Around $34 there with bet $3.65. Plarko's in good form as well for Luke O'Connor. Teagan Vorham takes the ride. So a real South Australian flavor there. But Plarko does have to meet some. It's a tough race, this race. You've got Perisher, VIP, Knobbler, and different gravy. So some quality things. Some of the thoroughbreds that Plarko needs to pass today.
Speaker 20Yeah, absolutely. Luke O'Connor's doing a really good job with his stable at the moment. He was potentially going to run him in the John Letts Cup, but he thought getting him over to Melbourne was probably the right thing to do. Now, on the back of a really good win here in Adelaide, he jumped up in triple last start and was quite dominant. The thing that you've got to like about Plarko is his racing pattern. He makes all his own luck. He puts himself up on speed. And from that good barrier there, I'm sure he's going to give a bold side. It wouldn't shock me. If he's still in front, you know, with a hundred to go there and they're flat out chasing him, because like he did last start, he can open up a bit of a gap and sort of get horses out of their comfort zone. So Teagan knows that horse really well, and I'm sure they'll go over there with a bit of confidence knowing that horse is back to winning form.
Speaker 2We're about to have a chat to Joe Gluis, the son of Andrew Gluis. And the Gluis team have got Churchill Rose engaged in the VRC Oaks. She's at $41. She was okay there in the Waitful on Saturday, but this team do know. Now to win a Classic at Flemington.
Speaker 20Yeah, absolutely. As you touched on, I thought, I thought she ran really well in the Waitful. Obviously she was sort of chasing what was a pretty solid tempo there behind the speed, but I thought she probably had every right to compound given she's had a pretty lengthy prep and it's been a really good campaign, but she really sticks to her task. She did that in the Hillsmith States leading into that Waitful. And yeah, she looks, she goes around a big price, but she's got the Craig Williams factor. He hasn't landed a major. In the spring. So maybe it is today in the Oaks at a price. And as you touched on the stable, certainly know how to get a three-year-old stay up on a bit on a big race day. So I'm sure she'll run well. She was actually a horse that was listed on that Dare to Dream platform you touched on earlier that RacingSA does so well. So keep an eye out. You never know. You might, there might be another Oaks, potential Oaks runner on that, on Dare to Dream at the moment.
Speaker 2It's just a terrific story, regardless then isn't it for South Australian racing?
Speaker 20Yeah, absolutely. And we know. the stable continually unearth these good three-year-old staying horses. obviously Gold Rush Guru you know most recently but going back to obviously Rebel Raider was the horse that you know really launched when he won a Victorian Derby and then was good enough to come back and win a Derby but they're a very astute stable and as they prove with Aerosol winning the John Letts Cup and she's done a massive job this prep that filly and look it's all in front of her too because she'll obviously go to the paddock after this and she's got so many good options when she comes back home in SA when the Adelaide Racing Carnival kicks off next year obviously there's you know a stack of three-year-old fillies races leading into the Australasian Oaks and I'm sure that's probably the long-term aim with Churchill Rose.
Speaker 2And what about Savon Ice and the Greys race I know our little mate David Taggett the Tagster he was giving this horse a good push it was 50 to 1 now it's into 41 dollars with bet 365 um do you give him a hope?
Speaker 20Look he's a classy galloper he's won the last two Balaclava Cups so you've got to be able to gallop to do that and he's always been a horse that had a lot of ability look he was a nominated for a Cox Plate as an unraced three-year-old by his former trainer Daryl Carrison so he's a horse that's always had his share of ability and um it's a pretty big moment for Taylor Hutchison a really up-and-coming apprentice here in South Australia who's obviously she's experienced Melbourne before riding for Dan Clark and Anupi McGilvray over there but she goes over on an Oaks day to ride um this horse that look he's right up to it on his best form he can be a little bit hard to catch but it wouldn't shock me if he run well but look he loses nothing with Taylor's riding she won the last race on Tuesday there at Morpheville on probably an 11 out of 10 ride and um yeah a real great occasion for these uh jockeys to experience the big crowd uh that'll be there in Flemington today.
Speaker 2If she turns up like she did well like he did on Balaclava day he's got to be right in that race at $41 um and then at Flemington Saturday Dirty Old Town for the Gloucester Camp Jamie Mellon rides they've also got Watch Me Win in race four along with the Yenches who will be saddling up one of their favourites and Sir Sway in that fourth race at Flemington on Champions Day.
Speaker 20Yeah Dirty Old Town's a filly I've always or man now that I've always uh been uh waiting for them to sort of test her over the border she did a massive job last preparation I think she won three or four in a row before she was placed in a listed race here in Adelaide she's come back really well this time around and the mole really suits her she's as honest as they make him so I'm sure she'll run well at an each way price and yeah the two in the sprint are interesting Watch Me Win I thought was brave as he always is the other day there at Melbourne he's on the quick backup from last weekend but I think Sir Sway is the real interesting factor look he's you know second up off a long break Campbell Rowilla rides a 56 for the first time in a long time to partner this horse he's been doing a lot of work with him down there in the the southeast and look when you go back through his form look he he was placed in a Goodwood uh you know a couple years ago now Sir Sway he's best as right in a race like this and I'm sure he'll acquit him himself well we actually had Campbell on front runner this morning having a quick chat and he just suggested it's probably all about how he adopts to the straight but I know he's got a lot of work into this horse since and yeah he's best is certainly good enough so it wouldn't shock me if he runs a bit of a
Speaker 2race do you have a winner for us at Gawler today
Speaker 20pretty tough at Gawler I did we also had Christy Evans on uh on our front runner this morning and I quite like whoops a daisy one of hers a horse that's been around the market probably harder races I thought it could run well I think it's short enough probably I think it's about 260 270 but it does look very well placed there and there's one in the last that I'm going to have something each way on Gucci girl uh Heath Montgomery's uh only got a small stable but their horses are going really well and this horse ran a super race in a city grade last start I think uh it's about 13 dollars uh Gucci girl in the last so maybe something each way on it but uh yeah it's pretty tough day at Gawler and uh yeah it looks a good card at more field on Saturday as well
Speaker 2so Gucci girl there in the last the front runner podcast go to your local podcast subscriber and you can find that podcast terrific if you love your South Australian racing and terrific interviews and you get some winners as well mate so we appreciate your time as always and um yeah enjoy today enjoy parks there more for your parks on Saturday and the rest of the Flemington carnival will do
Speaker 20mate cheers thanks for having me on there's
Speaker 2Lincoln Moore from racing SA um check out dare to dream.com.au where the next champion racehorse could be yours Joe Gluis will be joining us next here on giddy up join the conversation
Speaker 1Texas on 0 4 9 7 3 6 7 3 6 live across Australia this is giddy up with Gareth Hall
Speaker 2welcome back to giddy up 42 minutes past 11. um this is SA time thanks to racing SA and part of Thursday four mounts with the Rising Sun Hotel South Melbourne backing winners with premium stakes high quality service and the thrill of every race day this young man is a superstar Joe Gluis of course Andrew his old man is a star and one of the leading trainers in South Australia they've played a part already during the Flemington carnival and they've got a runner in the Oaks in Churchill Rose who was very good in the Wakefield on Saturday and Joe Gluis joins us here on giddy up Joe welcome to the show mate how's things thanks
Speaker 21Gareth thanks for having me on have you enjoyed Melbourne town uh I'm in Adelaide still at the moment actually I saw you there I saw
Speaker 2you there on um when we had our luncheon there our Cox played Eve luncheon yeah I
Speaker 21just popped over with a few boys for the weekend um yeah I thought we'd want to see the only Cox played at Flemington and um yeah it didn't
Speaker 2deliver yeah it did mate did you enjoy it yeah I
Speaker 21loved it and uh loved the uh Ascot Vale Hotel on a Friday night as well so yeah thanks for putting on that
Speaker 2show for us no problems mate um and what about aerosol you just own the Johnny let's cup don't you yeah
Speaker 21Jesus is a good horse yeah um yeah we're looking back this morning and he's won a stakes Ray race every every age so two three four five and six now um and yeah he just just keeps the delivering for the team um yeah he's been a great horse for dad as I mentioned um on Saturday it's sort of when the business changed over from my grandpa Leon to dad and um he was sort of the first horse that dad picked up so he's been fantastic for us only the good
Speaker 2ones can do what he's been able to do with that record as you point out from the very outset he's been able to get the job done
Speaker 21um yeah he's just a winner really like he's he's tough as nails and he never really puts in a bad race either so um yeah we probably have to chase a few over the border now with him he's uh rating starting to get a bit high yeah um but yeah we'll probably see him in Melbourne pretty shortly I'd
Speaker 2say what about your Philly in the Oaks Churchill Rose this is a terrific story as well as Lincoln Moore was pointing out from racing SA you could have purchased shares on the dare to dream website um she was a sixty thousand dollar buy at the Adelaide Magic Million sale um and she was very good in the wakeful I thought can she win it can she win this classic this afternoon
Speaker 21yeah as you mentioned obviously a pretty cheap purchase at the Adelaide Magic Million sales and um yeah she's just done everything right sort of since we've had her as a young horse um in terms of winning the Oaks I think she probably might not have the class as the top two or three or one two or three horses um but yeah once again she's also a horse that's really tough and just has a capacity um I I like to see the soft five maybe the soft six range she had a good win on the soft seven at Murray Bridge that day um so yeah looking forward to seeing what she can produce
Speaker 2today your grandfather Leon and of course your old man Andrew they've had great success winning classics at Flemington you seem to know what horse that you need to be competitive in these three-year-old staying events during Cup week
Speaker 21yeah um definitely no the team's done a great job over over a long period of time of having these sort of classic horses and probably comes back to Harry Perks um he's our owner and breeder back here in South Australia does a lot of his work up at Mill Park and um yeah he's probably one of the only only breeders now in Australia that tries to breed these staying horses and um yeah he he himself really wanted to win at Oaks but unfortunately he doesn't own this horse we we we bought it off him okay there
Speaker 2you go you should have given him a share back
Speaker 21yeah well it she was up for sale for a long time and um yeah all the all the shares got wrapped up just before her first
Speaker 2start and what about her half sister is he still in that
Speaker 21uh the racy Rosie Philly yeah I don't think yeah the Prada Dubai racy Rosie no I don't think he is either that's another one that's online for dare to dream so we got the two units podcast boys they actually own a little bit of a
Speaker 2share oh there you go footy and salt so how do you get involved then so um how does she go have you given her a have you tested out her yet or is it um still too early
Speaker 21yeah pretty early I guess for her she's she's in work at the moment yeah um but yeah we're we're just taking her along nicely she had her first set of evens the other day and did the time all right so um yeah pretty
Speaker 2early for us would you recommend Joe that we get onto the dare to dream website and buy a share
Speaker 21yeah definitely but make sure it's a McDonald Lewis racing horse um yeah they're the ones
Speaker 2she available on the on the website the half sister the Churchill Rose or she been sold
Speaker 21I think she's been fully sold I'm pretty sure we've got a couple others up there at the moment though
Speaker 2all right then we'll have a look we missed out on her but you'll let us know which one we should go in that'll that'll that'll help us Joe um then you got dirty old town and watch me win both ready to go at Flemington on Saturday um are you confident with their chances yeah
Speaker 21I thought I thought watch me win to start off was was really good last weekend uh Ben Allen sort of described that he wasn't in the best part of the track to make ground and he was still really really strong through the line and probably did his best work late so I was I was happy with the draw this week he's drawn seven sort of in the middle of the field they can dictate to where they want to go and where the best part of the track is so yeah this is probably as great as well he's been running in some pretty good races She ran in a group two at Caulfield against Jigsaw, who's probably a weight for age group one horse. So, yeah, back into the listed grade in 1200 looks to really suit.
Speaker 2All right, then. So it'd be great to get a winner anyway during Cup Week. What do you think your best chance is?
Speaker 21I'm really excited to see Dirty Old Town go around. She's another horse that just continues to win. Her last three wins, I think it's a combined margin of 0.5 lengths. So she just sticks the nose out, but she's got a great tenacity and really attacks the line well. Jamie Carr on board as well. And, yeah, she's drawn ten, which might be a little bit sticky, but she's a get-back-and-run-on-horse, so not too concerned about that.
Speaker 2She is a winner, isn't she? Like $17 there on Bet365. She might be an each-way play there on Saturday afternoon with Jamie Mallen on the board. And then you've got four runners at Morpheville on Saturday. Any winners there? What would be your best?
Speaker 21I think Tough Talk's probably our best.
Speaker 2Okay. I like Agamama. Agamama, she's one of my favorites.
Speaker 21Arugamama, yeah, she's been good. That was the day we went out to the Vanilla Cup.
Speaker 2Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 21Yeah. You had that little show in the front bar there, which was good.
Speaker 2So, Arugamama, can she win, or is it Tough Talk your best?
Speaker 21I think Tough Talk's our best. He's got a – he's had – I think it's his eighth start. He's already had three wins. So, yeah, he's a horse that we've, yeah, just taken a lot of time to get him right, but, yeah, he's right at the moment and just carried a heavy weight. And probably gassed out a little bit late there first up. So, yeah, he'll be ready to go second up.
Speaker 2And when are you getting on the license with the old man, mate? Surely he's not far away.
Speaker 21Yeah, hopefully not too far away. Still a few things to iron out. But, no, Dad's doing a great job by himself at the moment. And, yeah, obviously having a lot of success. So, yeah, we've got a great team behind us here in Adelaide. And, yeah, we're keen to travel horses when we get the opportunity. So, it works out really well.
Speaker 2The glues and the call-off boys behind you, old man. So, look out. Hey, we wish you the best of luck, mate. If I gave you $100, what would you do with it this weekend?
Speaker 21I'd have 50 each way on Dirty Old Town, I reckon. She's, yeah, really, really looking for that long straight. And, yeah, hopefully she's savaged the line like she has in her previous few starts. And, yeah, she might be hard to hold out.
Speaker 2Race two, number six, Dirty Old Town there at Flemington on Saturday afternoon. Great to see you doing so well, mate. Andrew Glewis is one of the best traders in SA. He's proven that. He can mix it with anyone in the country. And it's good to see the family and his boys coming through the trading ranks as well, working with him. And, yeah, mate, you keep on kicking those goals. And good luck over the weekend, especially today in that Oaks with Churchill Rose.
Speaker 21Perfect. Thanks, Gareth. Appreciate all the support.
Speaker 2He's a good man, Joe Glewis. Now, we're going to take – no, we're not taking a break. We've got Tassie time ready to go. Bit of stinger for Tassie time. The cheers are louder. Tassie, the perfect place to race. Cody Jordan now joins us, one of the star jocks there in Tassie. And she won the Goodwood Handicap with Blame It on the Boogie for Glenn Stevenson there on Tuesday. Hello to you, Cody. Thanks for your time.
Speaker 22Hello. Thank you. Thanks for having me on.
Speaker 2How about that there on Tuesday?
Speaker 22Yeah, super effort. I mean, like I say every time, this horse just steps up to everything that we ask of him. And he had a bit to do Tuesday. So I've probably never had him off the bridle like I did. And, yeah, he was really tough to the line.
Speaker 2And what was it like there on Cup Day at Hobart?
Speaker 22Yeah, it was really good. Thought the track was going to race a bit firm, but they just put a bit of water on it. And, yeah, the track raced perfect. And we had a bit of a crowd. And it was a big day.
Speaker 2You know how to win a new market. Of course, that's one of the feature races during the Tassie Summer Carnival. De Roche first accused of the horses that you've won a new market on. How can you – can you compare blaming on the boogie to those two horses I've just mentioned?
Speaker 22It is quite hard. I mean, De Roche and first accused, they're a class of their own, you know. They've probably proven themselves before they've gotten here. Whereas with boogie, it's another step up for him. He, you know, his probably toughest task was Tuesday, and he stepped up again. And all I know is he'll try his heart out. So I think, yeah, going into the new market, we're confident that we've done the best we can with him. It'll just be, you know, where he fits in with a class of horses like that.
Speaker 2He's a beauty, isn't he? Like, as you pointed out, he's some story. I reckon Coolmore sold him for about $2,200, I reckon. And then he's won over $150,000 now in prize money. He's looking at his records. So it's been some fine, really, from Glenn and his connections.
Speaker 22Oh, it's been a ripper. The owners, Matt and Leah, they've got just a boutique kind of bit of a setup. They breed a few horses at home. They've purchased. They've purchased a few horses. And, I mean, they've just hit the mark with this horse, Boogie. He's well and truly earned his way. He was a bit of a terror as a baby, but he pulled through. We left him as a colt for as long as possible. And he's just, yeah, he's just proven to be everything that we could have asked. He comes to the races guns a-blazin', and he thinks he's going to fit in pretty well with these big boys. So we'll see how he goes.
Speaker 2And let's hope he can take that next step.
Speaker 22Oh, and that's it. He'll be honest, like I said. He'll hit the line. And, you know, whether it's in front or he might be running them down late. So he'll try his hardest.
Speaker 2Now, Cody, tell us a little bit about your trip. You had three months off, I think, and you drove around Australia.
Speaker 22Yeah. How was that? Yeah, it took nearly four months off. Four months. We skipped out on the Tassie winter, so that was a massive tick as it was. Headed up the east coast of Australia, spent a lot of time in far north Queensland, went across to Darwin and then down through. The centre was something that my partner and I have kind of always wanted to do. And we just thought it's, you know, there's never a right time for it in the racing industry. We're going to always miss out on things. So we just went and did it. And yeah, it was a trip of a lifetime. Um, we've kind of adapted to that, you know, that travelling life. And there's another trip there probably in a year or so.
Speaker 2How exciting. So what was your favourite part of the trip?
Speaker 22Oh, favourite part would be, there was a little place just. Probably an hour and a half south of Cairns called Marillion Harbour and we just had everything that day. We had humpback whales, we snorkelled the Great Barrier Reef. We caught every fish known to mankind. It was, yeah, it was unreal.
Speaker 2Did you ride any horses on that holiday?
Speaker 22No, I actually didn't. I did sit on a couple for Aaron Kuru and Betty at their training facility in Victoria once we got a bit closer to home. So I kicked around a few pre-trainers that they've got there. For the Paddy Payne stable. But other than that, that was, that was just a little teaser to get home and get straight back into it.
Speaker 2Any horses that we should be following at the trials today at Launceston that you can give us a bit of a push to?
Speaker 22Oh, so far it really has just been a push for the older horses. I've trialled Just Cruising and Glory Mission and they'll both head towards the new market. So it's all I know is it's going to be a ripping race and yeah, there'll be a few horses there that will be hard to beat.
Speaker 2Who's the horse you're most looking forward to for the carnival there in Tassie?
Speaker 22Yeah, I think it's hard not to go past Boogie. Okay. It'll be, you know, like he's, he's gone to the new market and we're really confident with him. But what he does after that, I think is probably exciting, whether we stretch him out to 14 or we might even have to look towards Melbourne or something. But there's a couple of young horses going through the stable at Glen Stephenson's that we really want to see. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That we really like. So yeah, hopefully they all keep just doing the right thing and we have a good carnival.
Speaker 2Well, I hope you blamed it on the Boogie when you danced there on Tuesday night after winning a Goodwood handicap, Cody. We appreciate your time. Good luck with it all and go and win that new market again. No worries. Thanks guys. Here we go. There's Cody Jordan. Louis Clifton joins me. Time to wrap up this show. This text message. You've got to make more of this. Kiera Ma had seven runners. The mile in front was fifth. The first three were his, um. Um, I can't quite understand that text message.
Speaker 23Saying you didn't give Kieran enough credit.
Speaker 2Credit, yeah. That's basically what it said. Three quarters of the show yesterday. Not three quarters. Johnny O'Neill. Kieran, I love you. Jesus. I just want to congratulate you again. You did a wonderful job. The culture that you've able to set up is unbelievable. I love you, Kieran. What do you mean? We gave Kieran so much love. Yeah. I'm not sure about that. And he deserves all that love as well. Yeah, he did. What's your best on Oaks Day?
Speaker 23Uh, I'll be taking a double. The whole world's on Perisher. I'll be taking Perisher into Ray McNeeran. So, race five, number nine into race nine, number one. And I reckon I'll fan one in that country championship race. It's the toughest race all day. Yeah. Uh, Wetumpka. Six, race six, number 14 for the Galagotis Yard. Since I've gilded this horse, he's come back good. He's going well. Uh, he was on a bottomless, like a heavy 10 last start. Um, I know he likes wet tracks, but I reckon today getting back on a better surface, um, he'll go close. I'm going to play the six horse challenge
Speaker 2with bet three, six, five and win a hundred thousand. Yep. Yep. We'll see how we go. Um, Wetumpka, I wish you the best of luck there mate. We'll see. I'll take the $9. Yeah, you should each way. Yep. Each way. You might get better anyway. Yeah, I probably, I'll wait. Um, we'll catch up with you tomorrow morning.
Speaker 23Big show. Big show. Friday. Mark Hunter and Chris Waller again. Yes. After Mark Hunter tomorrow.
Speaker 2Yep. Should be good. Good on you, Louie. And that is it for Giddy Up on this Thursday. Have a great Oaks Day. Thanks for your company as always. And we'll catch you again tomorrow morning from eight.
