Giddy Up Full Show (05/10/26)

Giddy Up with Gareth Hall covered a massive weekend of racing, with David Gately providing the Monday Breakdown. The Flemington track performed remarkably despite heavy rain, earning praise from connections. Cosmic Crusader's dominant Turnbull Stakes victory was the highlight, and owner Bob Peters is weighing a Caulfield Cup or Cox Plate campaign. The Next Episode stamped himself as the Coolmore favorite after a thrilling Danehill Stakes win over Natural Flang. Sienna Grima created a memorable story by winning the Epsom Handicap on God's Window in her first Group 1 ride, earning praise from Chris Waller. Skybird won the Gilgai Stakes, though jockeys Ben Melham and Austin Galati were fined for not riding out their mounts. Mr Monaco secured a Melbourne Cup spot by winning the Bart Cummings, while Let's Deal impressed in defeat. Jamie Melham's decision to ride Blue Door in The Everest opened the door for Mark Zahra to partner Half Yours in the Caulfield Cup. Bob Peters will decide Cosmic Crusader's next target within days.

Speaker 1time for the melbourne breakdown with david gately i'm a celestial legend
Speaker 2brilliant in the doncaster mile at group one tough in the roundwick guineas at group one and laurel river a devastating winner of the group one dubai world cup the son of size sensation into mischief hello to you david gately hello
Speaker 3to you gareth hall what
Speaker 2about that flemington track and one text message already coming through on the garrett's horse and hound text line the sensational performance of the weekend has to be liam o'keefe and the flemington track outstanding performance to even race and then improve over the day that's from the boy from the bull um it was remarkable really
Speaker 4no it was it was a fabulous atmosphere out there and then the crowd were you know it was a decent crowd given the horrific weather leading in but um yeah credit where it's due i thought that the track played really well and and look we know it's world-class facilities but when you've got that couple with world-class operators uh you tend to get good results don't you so um very safe from the start they were mindful obviously of safety first and paramount um and then uh and then you know 10 to an eight um played well and you know credit to all involved it's uh we don't see that sort of stuff too often
Speaker 2in melbourne i reckon even liam o'keefe was a little surprised with the way the track handled it because even on that saturday morning he didn't want it too much more rain he i was texting him a bit he goes it needs to stop it needs to stop and it wasn't stopping um and even by the time that the first race came along there was still a little bit of drizzle there throughout the meeting and it had held up beautifully so um when you're doing a new track and if the mrc um when they do their new track well i think it's an easy it's an easy model to follow just do what flemington did
Speaker 4basically yeah then we should be right
Speaker 2yeah no it's
Speaker 4a good place to start i mean they've um as i say you know world-class facilities and you've got the right people you know in charge so you tend to get really good results 99 out of 100 times on that track and as far as the on-course action you know it's a good day's racing when you're trying to put seven horses in a four
Speaker 2horse run of the day poll yes yes who won that run of the day
Speaker 4poll well tempted was blinding really with their finish so i was not surprised and so it's god's window but um punters gravitated to tempted and by a decent margin 49 god's window 20 of the vote cosmic crusader 18 the next episode 13 and we left our global goal it was electric and even saintly dancer gee i could go
Speaker 2on geez that surprises me that cosmic crusader then from the punters out there they're going to get more votes i thought he was devastating there in the turnbull stake so we're about to talk about him right now in fact it was the highlight race it was moving day at flemington and cosmic crusader made his move ahead of the big grand slam races coming up later on this spring
Speaker 5to survival of the fittest at the 450 four-legged sir delius cosmic crusader starting to come on and then came half yours and aliena is battling on light infantry man at the 250 cosmic crusaders a big threat the outsider gap sir delius aliena cosmic crusader took the front at the 150 he takes the lead two legs light infantry man then sir delius aliena but cosmic crusader too strong won the turnbull light infantry man second it was
Speaker 2a magnificent win i think it surprised a few we all know he was a very good horse but we didn't know he was that good i don't think um that was a domination over 2 000 meters set weights and penalties we understand that but it was it was some performance i'm just having a look at the market now we'll we'll start with cosmic crusader gator then i'll play um the beaten jockeys video there from racing.com and then we'll have a chat about a few of the horses behind him but now with the the cox plate market um with bet 365 he is the he's the fourth favorite or equal third favorite at seven dollars so delius still the favorite from birdman aliena and cosmic crusader and then the core field cup which is a possibility of going um he's at 17 so yeah if he goes to the core field cup he'd be favorite if bob confirms that if he does say later this week um but yeah he was terrific wasn't he the wa start look he
Speaker 4was i guess the 2000 was an unknown um we certainly didn't have any reason to doubt him um and rightly so i think the other advantage of him was the wet track and you know he's only been beaten once on a wet track and he's only been beaten once on a wet track and he's only been beaten once on a wet track and he's only been beaten once on a wet track and he's only beaten once on a wet track and he's only been beaten once on a wet track and he's only been beaten once on a wet track and he's only been beaten once on a wet track um and that was you can argue is probably wet track um and that was you can argue is probably the best run in the race in the mimsy given the the best run in the race in the mimsy given the the best run in the race in the mimsy given the pattern of that race in day pattern of that race in day pattern of that race in day um and yeah it was you know it was quite um and yeah it was you know it was quite um and yeah it was you know it was quite dominant in the end he said off that fast dominant in the end he said off that fast dominant in the end he said off that fast speed clear running all the way then if speed clear running all the way then if speed clear running all the way then if you're good enough you know you win and you're good enough you know you win and you're good enough you know you win and um and he was quite strong and it's not um and he was quite strong and it's not um and he was quite strong and it's not as if they crawled and then he out as if they crawled and then he out as if they crawled and then he out sprinted them you know he really i sprinted them you know he really i sprinted them you know he really i really had to sustain a gallop in that really had to sustain a gallop in that really had to sustain a gallop in that race and he went straight past it race and he went straight past it race and he went straight past it elias he went straight past aliena elias he went straight past aliena elias he went straight past aliena and then light infantry man so all and then light infantry man so all and then light infantry man so all honor's winner um honor's winner um honor's winner um the the next challenge for him kofo cup is the the next challenge for him kofo cup is the the next challenge for him kofo cup is obviously 2 500 and a handicap obviously 2 500 and a handicap obviously 2 500 and a handicap the next challenge for him in a cox plate the next challenge for him in a cox plate the next challenge for him in a cox plate is probably a drier track i guess
Speaker 2is probably a drier track i guess is probably a drier track i guess yeah and i i reckon like uh yeah and i i reckon like uh yeah and i i reckon like uh during the race you would you were during the race you would you were during the race you would you were thinking this definitely advantages sir thinking this definitely advantages sir thinking this definitely advantages sir dillies if he's right to go high dillies if he's right to go high dillies if he's right to go high pressure race this is what he loves pressure race this is what he loves pressure race this is what he loves and cosmic crusader he was on pace there and cosmic crusader he was on pace there and cosmic crusader he was on pace there in a in a fast run underwater and he in a in a fast run underwater and he in a in a fast run underwater and he just he ran out of gas and birdman went just he ran out of gas and birdman went just he ran out of gas and birdman went straight past him but he was a straight past him but he was a straight past him but he was a different horse there on saturday
Speaker 4different horse there on saturday different horse there on saturday yeah a little bit of a colder ride i I think was important, add to that the softer track. And they said that straight after the race, William Pike and Connections, didn't they? So they understand their athlete, you know, and to get the best out of him, that's their job, like any footy coach. And they do it. They do it really well. Go back through this horse's form. When was his last poor run? He just doesn't know how to run a bad race. He's a ripper, this horse.
Speaker 2And I don't know what Bob Peters will do. Like, I reckon there's a possibility he will go to a Caulfield Cup. Now, and even like, I know they like to dream big in WA. Why not try and do a Northerly and win a Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate?
Speaker 4Yeah, well, he's pretty tough. I mean, not many are Northerly. He was one of the tougher sources I've seen. But he's in that realm, isn't he?
Speaker 2Yeah. And it's not like he doesn't know how to back up. During that Perth Carnival in the summer, he went for, like, I think he raced four out of five weeks. They were 1,400 metres that he needed to win an RJ Peters, and he didn't. He was unlucky. And then he won the next weekend the Carbine over 1,400 metres. And then two weeks later, he went to the 1,800 metres of the Northern. and won at Group 1 at Wait for Age. And the week later, he backed up over the 1,400 metres there. So, yeah, so he knows how to back up. I know this is a different distance range, but he's a tough horse. He would have that grounding underneath him. So it'll be interesting to see which way he goes. You'd have to back him, wouldn't you, in a Caulfield Cup, Gator?
Speaker 4Well, it's just a box that's unticked, you know. Like, it's certainly, history says plenty of times horses have run extremely well at 1,400 and been able to win, and then also 2,400. It gets a little bit harder to be both fast twitch and slow twitch and add to a Melbourne Cup. But a Caulfield Cup still gives him, put it this way, I've got no reason to doubt him, but it is a box that's still unticked, I guess.
Speaker 2Yeah, so he gets 56 in the Caulfield Cup if he goes down that path. So that's Cosmic Crusader. He was very good. Let's listen to the beaten jockeys there after the Turnbull Stakes. Damien Lane, Aliana? Super. The race shape just wasn't ideal for where she's at in her preparation. I think after a tough run today, she's going to be peaking next start.
Speaker 6Craig Williams, Sir Delius?
Speaker 7Yeah, look, I guess when you're in the position that you are and riding a horse like him, and we're always just expecting to turn out and dominate races, I think there's got to be a lot of weight and emphasis put on the fact that it's a heavy tractor. But even though he got through the track, I don't think he's at home. Plus, he's also chasing a really hot speed. So the winner was very good today, but it's a very hard fit. And I just felt that he might be able to probably benefit from that run because it was such a gruelling run rather than being in his prime. So most importantly, he comes through the race really well. I felt like everything was fine out there and hopefully get it on a firmer surface for him. And he's had another run under his belt. Ethan Brown, Zaran? Race shape against. Michael D, St George?
Speaker 8Yeah, just had to get too far back from the gate and then. Just struggled from then on.
Speaker 9Jordan Childs, she's a hustler. Yeah, she just struggles in that wet ground, sort of. On top of the ground, she has a bit more confidence on the wet ground. It just dims her confidence a little bit and she's not able to finish off her races. I think get her back on a dry track next start and she'll go a lot better. John McNeil, Buckaroo? Buckaroo was disappointing in a really high-tempo sort of race today. Hopefully he pulls up OK. Jamie Mellum, half yours? Yeah, look, he ran well. I think he's just definitely looking for the Caulfield Cup distance.
Speaker 10Harry Coffey? Infantryman? Gee, he went good, didn't he? He was very brave. We just threw the reins at him, let him gallop and he thrived in that sort of scenario. I was waiting for them to come, but he was really brave, fought on and the main thing, he's pulled up really well after it, so he's in the zone.
Speaker 2So there's the beaten jockeys. Very interesting to hear their comments after this year's Turnbull Stakes. We'll start off with the Cox Plate favourite here, Gator and Sir Delius. He'll be third up in a Cox Plate. Would you be worried with this favourite? You backed him.
Speaker 4Oh, yeah, because you've probably taken unders. You know, I don't think he'll start, what, 290 or whatever he was. But, look, you'd think he'd run really well in it because he runs well most times that he races. Is he dominant like he was in last year's Turnbull? No. But I can see, you know, he hasn't struck a track that wet for a while and he did have to chase that strong speed. And he was second up. So all of those factors are playing on my mind. And my job is to try and tip who I think will win.
Speaker 2From a profile perspective, we saw Cosmic Crusader who came out of a truly run Underwood and he had that race fitness on his side when you watched Light Infantryman do what he did there on Saturday. How much improvement do you think will be coming out of Sir Delius and Eliana because of that hit out there in the Turnbull Stakes compared to Cosmic Crusader before the Cox Plate?
Speaker 4Yeah, I can't line them up with Cosmic Crusader. There's no signs of stopping. There's no signs of stopping for him. So, you know, I've long given up trying to predict end of prep runs because it's ludicrous. You know, you really don't know until they're in the race sometimes whether they're, you know, end of prep. You know, you get some telltale signs in track work, you know, when they're racing, you know, a bit keen, wanting it over and done with. But there's no signs of that from him, especially off that win. What I know about Sir Delius is he's very good third up. What I know about Eliana is she looks an interesting, endurance athlete to me. So whether or not she can stay at 2,000 metres and quicken in time is where the problem lies, I think. If she's mine, she's in a Caulfield Cup. But we've had this discussion many times.
Speaker 2So she's not going to a Caulfield Cup. Who do you want to be with? Who's a better chance in your eyes? Eliana, Sir Delius and Cosmic Crusader right now for this year's Cox Plate?
Speaker 4What's the track rating?
Speaker 2I reckon Caulfield Cup day, I don't have a clue. I'd just say it's a good track.
Speaker 4Alrighty. Yeah, look, right now, if I was framing a market on a good four, good three, I'd probably have Sir Delius' favourite, but no, a near 290 would have been.
Speaker 2No, no. If it's a slide track, would you have Cosmic Crusader?
Speaker 4Yeah, I think he deserves to be favourite on a soft track. As I say, he's unbeaten on a soft track, except for that third in the Memsie when he was, I think he was probably the best run in the race, wasn't he, that again?
Speaker 2Yeah. He's a good horse. He's a good horse. He's a good horse. He's a proper horse. Yeah. Yeah. Who knows? He could just be getting better. Cosmic Crusader. Well done to Andrea Leak as well. Her first group won. People ask me, why isn't Andrea on the show this morning? Because when you train Bob Peter's horses, he speaks. The trainers don't. The trainers don't. So that's the reason why Andrea Leak won't be on the show this morning. But well done to Andrea. She's done a great job with that Galloper. And he was clearly the best run on the day. And as William Pike, he summed it up, I reckon, best when, there was a video taken of him talking to Andrea Leak, and they were just having a conversation by themselves, and the cameras caught them. And Pike, he said, he just destroyed them. It's hard to argue, really. Caulfield Cup market. It's interesting. It's in, what, under two weeks' time now. Saran got beaten 18.81 lengths, and he's still the favourite for the Caulfield Cup gator. Half yours is going down that path, Mark. So we're all right. He'll get 57 and a half on his back. He's at $9. Say, George, he got beat 11.8 lengths. He's at $9. And then Wyndark's at 11. Royal Supremacy at 13. She's a hustler at 13. Your thoughts there?
Speaker 4I'm thinking it might be an internationals year at first glance. But I've got a lot of time for St. George. And certainly, Saran, I can forgive anything on that track. Certainly, the margins are out of control, which they often are on very heavy tracks. So I'm happy to overlook those. I'm not saying George isn't a heavy track. He's a heavy track anyway. So it was a non-event for him, and he was flying before that. So he's fine. Yep. Saran, yeah, beaten a long way, but happy to forgive as well. It was a blanket finish, though, at the lead-up race. The naturalism wasn't as close. Correct. But he won it well. I don't know. I'm still interested in Kingswood, which you'll see on Saturday. Yep. I'm very interested in the internationals, though.
Speaker 2What about I Hope He Wins? She was midfield. She's $23 for a Caulfield Cup.
Speaker 4Yeah, finished off quite well without ever threatening. So it was a sound or even effort. Obviously a handicap. You'd be in the thought process somewhere.
Speaker 2Yep. And the horse that we haven't talked about, who's brilliant over 2,000 metres at Flemington, he's an Australian Cup champ. And he was given a peach, I reckon, by Harry Coffey. I don't know. Like, we know he races at his best when he does that. But the camp indicated, really, that he might not have been ready to perform like that. But he was out of this world, like an infantryman. Like, could he win a Cox Plate Gator?
Speaker 4Well, I mean, he was so tough and so good winning an Australian Cup. He was sort of brilliant that day off a fast speed. He was so good winning and so tough beating Pride of Jenny, wasn't he, in the Australian Cup? Yep. And when he first came here, I remember, you know, Kieran Marr and the team saying something like, "He's one of the best horses they've had." Something like that. It was something that really pricked my ears. And then he ran in the Golden Eagle or something, and was below, maybe hadn't acclimatised. But on recent evidence, you know, he's right on the radar for me, because that was a fearsome speed, and he beat all but one.
Speaker 2Yeah. No, I agree. I reckon he's a big chance. I think he's underrated a little bit like the infantryman. So, yeah, he was great there on Saturday. Just quickly, a few questions coming through. What about she's a hustler?
Speaker 4Yeah, a dryer. Yeah, no match at all on Saturday on that.
Speaker 2Yep. And she's a bit worse on track for the Melbourne Cup still on that, what we saw there in the Turnbull Stakes?
Speaker 4Yep. Well, he ran well out last year at the Melbourne Cup, didn't he? So there's no reason to think he won't do the same again, probably without winning it. All right, then.
Speaker 2So that's a look at the Turnbull Stakes. We'll take a break. We'll come back and have a look at the other feature races there at Flemington on Saturday. This is Giddy Up and the Monday Breakdown. Gareth Hall and David Gately with you.
Speaker 1Join the conversation. Text us on 0499 736 736. Live across Melbourne. Live across Australia. This is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall. Welcome back to Giddy Up.
Speaker 2This is the Monday Breakdown, all thanks to Woodside Park, the home of celestial legend, brilliant in the Doncaster Mile at Group 1 and tough in the Randwick Guineas at Group 1. And, of course, Lower River, devastating winner of the Group 1 Dubai World Cup and the son of the Sire sensation into mischief, Jujica Bogata. What did you make of his victory there in the Metrop? Could he be a major player in a Coolfield Cup?
Speaker 4Well, he's certainly fine. his prep you know he was terrific also Three runs have been great, and he just had the good run. But, gee, he quickened well, didn't he, off that moderate tempo and went by the spruik horse, Arthur Wolfe, who came back. I'm a strongy. He gave that horse a kilo and a half and still beat him as well. There were gaps behind. You know, the Afraidies was beating 3.6, Greenspaces 4.8. So, yeah, he's in the right frame of mind, yep.
Speaker 2Hey, Gator, how do you rate Birdman now going into the Cox Plate after watching the Turnbull Stakes for mine? He went straight past Cosmic Crusader. Surely he's a moral in the Cox Plate, if only if it was as easy as that, Mark.
Speaker 4Yeah, that's right. I'd be a millionaire. I wouldn't have to be working every Saturday, that's for sure. And you miss the bunny ears around working. But the horse was exceptional winning second up, and he was 14 to 1,800. So there's no planet I've ever seen that wouldn't think he's going to go backwards off that.
Speaker 2No. He goes around, of course, in the might and power, taking on She's Alabama. And that group one weight for age contest to kick off that Caulfield Cup Carnival on Saturday. We always knew there were going to be horses like a Cosmic Crusader that make a statement on moving day there at Flemington on Saturday. Well, one of the other horses that made quite the statement was the next episode who was first up this campaign. And once again, he is now favourite for the Coolmore after he did this in the Danehill Stakes.
Speaker 5Proper 450 to go, pocket full of cash with natural fling on the outside, idling up, Stretton Ruler behind them, followed by overexcited up the middle of the course from Big Sky Alibaba. The next episode's wider and trying to wind up. Natural fling got to the front from pocket full of cash. Mbube is getting through, then came overexcited. Natural fling, 100 to go from Mbube. And then the next episode, natural fling, 50 metres to go. The next episode digs in, cups up, the next episode a big win.
Speaker 2Oh, what about that roar of Flemington? Two great horses going at each other. They're the two favourites for the Coolmore. The filly and the colt. But that was some return by the next episode, Gator.
Speaker 4Yeah, what a fabulous race. What a fabulous race call from Matt Hill. And gee, it adds to the theatre, doesn't it? A great race caller. And two really good horses. So going into that race, you know, never misdoing her after the race. But going into the race, I think on our game plan, I said the next episode, if you ignored the trials, it'd be $1.80, $1.70. Yeah. But what do you do with those trials? Two of them were rank. One of them was good. And then a non-event, really. I guess my. So after the race now, I think what I've learned is just make sure you trust the good stables. Yeah. You know, to get them there, fitting well. I mean, there's no point watching trials if you don't take your information in. So you've got to take it in. So I took natural fling over him. And I thought she was home when she beat off those on-speed runners. He hadn't really let her go yet. And then she did. She did let down. She sprinted well. But she had one problem. And the next episode is now two zip over her. They beat the rest well enough, I thought. Mbuba and Alibaba was good. But how do they turn the tables? I'm forgiving overexcited who had to come underneath them. And it wasn't the day for that.
Speaker 2Yeah. So the Cornwall Market has the next episode now, $3.25. Natural fling, $5.50. St. Gothard at $7.00. Blue Door at $8.00. Setono Glow at $10.00. Woolwoven at $10.00. Paradoxium at $13.00. Now, um, do you think she could, she could turn the tables on a good track with the next episode?
Speaker 4Uh, yeah. And at $1,200. Yeah, I think so. Yeah. And I think, I don't know. I think she'd be strong at $1,200. Yeah. Um, I think she's, I think she'd be better on dry ground. Yep. Um, and the next episode, he probably still has to tick that box, you know, uh, on a, on a good four to even a three. Um, no reason to doubt him. Um, and he might be better on dryer, but, uh, that's what I'm thinking.
Speaker 2We'll stick with the three-year-old. Racist. This was the superimposed stakes. It was a good race, but miss white TD, you know, they, what they bet 23 odd dollars. I reckon, um, midweek with her and she SP at about six or $7. She was given a beautiful ride by Craig Williams, but a way she went to defeat Valas. Signetti was back in third. There was some good performances behind her as well, but she, she was dominant to take out the superimposed.
Speaker 5Asking the serious question. Signetti deeper than skewer. Miss white TD, the inside, the polo couldn't quick and ICU and Valas right down the center of the course is finishing. Well, 250 meters to go. Miss white TD up on the inside, join Signetti, Valas right down the outskirts, trying to get there. And then came ICU. It's Miss white TD, 100 meters to go. Valas and Signetti. They were followed back behind those by ICU, but Miss white TD going strongly and Miss white TD far too good for them. Two links. Yeah,
Speaker 2she was devastating there on that rain affected track. She's now the $5 favorite for, for the VRC Oaks and with the Derby market, the VRC Derby market after that race, the superimposed, which has always been a good lead up race to the Derby. All these three-year-olds will probably have one more run either at that Moonee Valley meeting, or they could go to Caulfield on cup day. I'm just having a look at the Derby market now here. And you've got the favorite is diamond or at seven, um, screw at $9. He was a big effort. He was three wide, no cover and just kept on coming. He looked like, he's got the 2,500 meters written all over him there. Um, and Valis who was second is at $8 50. They're Gator. Yeah.
Speaker 4Look, the winner was great. I mean, she's so early in her career. First run in the blinkers. Um, she relished the ground. Obviously that was helpful. I'd imagined to her that she just traveled well off that solid speed. They all left the fence, didn't they? It was like a driver, semi-traveler. And that's what Craig did. And she was, she was quite dominant. It's not as if she beat up on hacks. I've got a bit of time for Valis and, and to me, you know, Aragog who's up outside the speed. So I think it was a decent race without being the A pluses, but it's, it's her upside that, um, that is most intriguing, uh, and gives her, gives you a lot of, uh, hope going forward. Yeah. Um, again, you know, very heavy track. There's an asterisk on all these performances on Saturday. How many more heavy tens and nines and eights we get? Um, probably not many, although we do live in Melbourne.
Speaker 2Yeah. Yes. What'd you make of Skua?
Speaker 4Uh, wide, no cover battled. I'm really, really well,
Speaker 2you know, that was the same form as the winner.
Speaker 4So, um, yeah, given the run that that horse had, I thought held on really well.
Speaker 2The manifold stakes. I'll just ask you about saintly dancer. She was dominant. We might show a replay shortly over racing.com, but, um, she like when we had a chat to Jack Turnbull, he said the one horse that he's concerned about on a heavy track would be saintly dancer. She lapped it up. Um, she led all the way and won like a good thing. I think she even surprised, uh, Kira Ma there on Saturday. He didn't think that she was a thousand guineas horse, but after that, um, look at a guy there on racing.com. She, she has to be, she has to be in the thousand guineas calculation. Now she's $7. We bet three, six, five regal ambition. Still the strong favorite at $4.
Speaker 4Yeah, look, she was, um, well, exceptional. I had a little query on a heavy. I think I had a second pick, but I did have a concern about a 10. Yeah. Um, but she certainly put that to bed. I think, as you said, even the stable worried about, I think she'd be better dryer as well.
Speaker 11So heaven help.
Speaker 4Um, the other, as if she's links better on dryer. Um, is it, there's some better Phillies to come and, and compete with her with respect to Jolie and beautiful you and those sort of girls. And of course, um, profligate wasn't there. So she was a late, um, yeah, I like touching with the color thing. So, um, look, so she couldn't have done any more than she's done. It's a big win. Uh, one of the biggest wins of the day.
Speaker 2Um, and Jamie Mellum, obviously she's heading to the, Everest to ride blue door. So she's given up some nice rides on Caulfield cup day, Mark Sarah, placing her on half yours and Trent Mason, how to reporting that Damien lane picks up the ride of pretty baby in, uh, the group 1000 guineas now. Um, and she's the second or third favorite for that feature. So that's a look at those three-year-old races there from Saturday. It's right on eight 30. We're going to take a break. We'll come back and have a look at the Bart Cummings where Mr. Monica booked his place in our great race, Alexis Melbourne cup.
Speaker 1Text us on 0 4 double nine 7 3 6 7 3 6 live across Australia.
Speaker 2Welcome back to Giddy Apple. Thanks to bet three, six, five. And of course the breakdown brought to you by Woodside park, the home of celestial legend. He was brilliant in a Doncaster bowl at group one and tough in the round with guineas at group one level as well. The girl guy was an interesting race. It was a big talking point. After the race as well with skybird getting there over smooth Chino and both Ben Mellum and Austin Galati fine for not riding out their horses in the concluding stages. It was a fascinating race to watch skybird. This was her chance to win another race. And she didn't let the punters down there on Saturday.
Speaker 5Chino down the outside followed by skybird who just needs some room hedge 300 meters to go with Arkansas kid moving up to claim it. Then winners edge skybirds got out and then smooth Chino skybird moves up to Arkansas kid at the clock tower. Then smooth Chino skybird. Let's go. Let her link back and saw kid and smooth Chino skybird draws on and skybird one at skybird a half to all, but a neck on the line to smooth Chino off the winner.
Speaker 2Jeez. That was interesting. This is what Mitch Freeman had to say to the noon and brothers yesterday on
Speaker 11correct weight. Ben give you a little bit of a heart attack there late Mitch.
Speaker 3Yeah, of course he did. But, um, what a brilliant ride through the first sort of, uh, 95% of it, I suppose you look at it like a footy game, and the bloke that's had 40-odd touches and kicked five goals and then turned it over in the back line and the opposition team kicked the winning goal or something near the siren. But it was a terrific ride through the early stages, got into all the right spots that we wanted to. She let rip. If you watch it again and watch closely, he certainly didn't get to the bottom of her. She's got a big handbrake on her, even in her track work. She finishes even in her truck and cantering work. She pretty much comes back to a walk and stops still. So no surprise that she did stop like that when he sort of eased off the accelerator and I'm sure that he'll take his learnings from that.
Speaker 2Yeah, poor old Austin Ghilardi. I reckon he was following Ben Mellon and when Ben stopped riding, he stopped riding. So that's racing at the end of the day. Both were fined for not riding out their mounts. Benny, $2,000 and Austin, $1,000. But yeah, as Mitch Freeman pointed out, if Ben doesn't stop riding, then I don't think Smoochino was catching her, regardless.
Speaker 4Yeah, look, I think, first of all, we've got a trademark on using footy analogies. I think Mitch is.
Speaker 2Yeah, I think that was a brilliant analogy as well, taking a leaf out of your book, Gator.
Speaker 4You're still in our thunder, mate. I'm just saying. Yeah. There'll be an invoice there. But yeah, look, it looked her race. She hadn't won for a while, but the query for me going in was gate two with the scratching. She drew five, jumped from two, and we've all watched the first two. I mean, we've all watched the first two, but we've all watched the first two, but we've all watched the first two. So they needed a plan. And I said that on Sky before the race. This should be fascinating. I'm really keen on it, but they'll need a plan. They'll need a good ride. And it was brilliant, you know, from that draw. Weave through, save for one run, then sprint quick, especially on wet ground. And then, yeah, so they learned something. I think that's the key. You do have to ride. Because every athlete's different, right? Like 95 out of 100, that'd still be cruising when you're, you know, you're. pull the handbrake. But some clock off, and many a better horse than Skybird have done that. Smoochino was good. He handled the hot, heavy ground well. There was good money for him, too. So Punnett thought that he would handle it. Loved the run of King Zepho going forward.
Speaker 2Yeah, is he the horse to follow again, King Zepho? I reckon there's a good race in Smoochino. Arkansas kid, I reckon that was his opportunity. But he's done it before to us, King Zepho, where he's been in our black book for a long time.
Speaker 4Yeah, he has. And I gave him a good hope on Saturday at a nice price. And he ran well without winning. But 1,400's more in his wheelhouse, and probably better than a heavy ace by then. So, yeah, look, there's a good race in him. He's not going to win a Group 1, I don't think, but there's a good race in him. Plenty of races.
Speaker 2Yeah, let's look at the Gill guy. We'll take a break. We'll come back and have a look at the other features there at Flemington on Saturday. Live. Welcome back to Giddy Up, Gareth Hall. David Gately with you. The Bach Cummings is always an interesting race because it's the final golden ticket race. Not anymore, actually. If you win the Moonee Valley Cup and Geelong Cup, you're into the Melbourne Cup. But it's the final golden ticket race for the VRC ahead of their great race, the Lexus Melbourne Cup. And once again, it was Kieran Marr with one of his stays that qualified for this year's great race.
Speaker 5500 metres to go. Mr Monaco trying to throw it a challenge to Campaldino. Wooden Vernie and Think Giant now peels to the middle of the course from Let's Deal. A gap valley in King and behind them Barkley Square. Mr Monaco, 250 metres to go. Surge to the front from Campaldino. Think Giant, Let's Deal out past the middle. Wandering off a true line trying to get there. Mr Monaco with 100 metres to go. Let's Deal's the only threat. Two legs of it. But Mr Monaco is going. Great guns from Let's Deal. And Mr Monaco's going to be here. Cup day. Mr Monaco a length and a quarter.
Speaker 2Yeah, Mr Monaco was awesome, wasn't he? He was a sensational run. So he gets into the Melbourne Cup. But you feel for Let's Deal. Like if the Melbourne Cup had a wild card, you'd nearly give her the wild card with all the lead-up races that she's been in. And she went out of this world, I reckon, there for her anyway on Saturday, Gator.
Speaker 4Yeah, the Quinella were both really good one day. They beat the rest of them easily. And Mr Monaco's got a great third-up profile. He loves wet ground. He had the good run off a clear second. Took over a long way from home, though. You know, and then rolled in and kept going too well. So all on us him. In saying that, Let's Deal, you know, hooked out and ran about a bit. I hadn't seen that from her before, but she got a bit lost out there. But she kept closing, beat everything else clearly. So they were both really good. Obviously, Jenny Vermoes pulled up lame. Forgive. Think Giant's not a wet tracker. So there were some excuses down the, you know, behind. But the Quinella had done, had a, a big margin on the rest of the field.
Speaker 2I think Shroklitz is a better chance than Mr Monaco heading into a Melbourne Cup. Your thoughts there, Gator?
Speaker 4Yeah, probably. I think she'd be shorter in the market, I'd imagine, without looking at the weights here.
Speaker 2Yeah. Conte Lantique, he deserved that victory. He paid it. And well done to you too, Gator, because you tipped this horse on top. You were keen on him each way. And he never let you down. And I guess when you're at Flemington and you tip a double-figure winner in the last race, surely someone shouts you a beer.
Speaker 4Yeah, look, I was heading straight to the car. They set me up in a wind tunnel out there on Saturday. Sky, I've never been so cold. It was great. It's not about me.
Speaker 2Gil was there as well. Surely could have asked him, hey, Gil, any chance you could get a heater? You flow me to Sydney and put me in a kayak. Any chance you could, yeah, 7 a.m., any chance you could look after your main man?
Speaker 4Clearly not the main man. Gil, I weighed a 50 at Saturday, and someone said, oh, did you hear what Gil said? I said, what, what, what? I was on air. I didn't hear. And he goes, I think Gator's been in the editing room. I wanted more Ellie on it. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2I think I was watching that on Channel 7. I think Richo set him up. You're great, mate.
Speaker 4Yeah, mate. He's a good operator, Richo. He could never play volleyball with him. So, Codon Leak, Adam Leak, look, he's not getting any younger, but the key to the race Saturday, I think, was being able to draw a gate, sit up closer, and the wet track. So, a few of those, a few of those behind, less advantaged by wet ground. I'm talking about the likes of Cafe Millennium, you know, Just Party, pulled up with the respiratory issue anyway. And Ken Commandments, I thought was vulnerable coming back in trip. Look, he's dropped to 1,400 in the past and just hasn't been able to quicken. Yeah. And that's what happened to him again. So, if the planets align, all these 17-odd bucks Wednesday night with the Oz Racing fam, he's our best ruff. And he won well.
Speaker 2Yeah, and so with the Oz Racing fam, you send out your emails on a Wednesday night, Gator, especially this time, at the time of the year. And you get to look at all of your top six selections. You get to dissect the best overs, et cetera. And you can find a horse like Conte Atlantique and get the $17. And your family get that Bible to study over the next couple of days before, of course, the Metropolitan Saturday meeting. So, they would have had a good weekend, I'm sure.
Speaker 4Yeah, I think there was some really good feedback, which is what we want. We want punters to stay afloat and be engaged in the sport, enjoying it. And informed. You know, I think about a $3,000 quarter as well didn't hurt.
Speaker 2Yeah. And Henry DeWaay, I texted him in September and I said, the Supernova is our race for Conte Atlantique. Surely you can lock the giddy up slot in with that horse for that race at Packham. I think you'll, if you can continue to keep him up for that long, I reckon he'd be a great horse for us, Gator.
Speaker 4Yeah, look, he's pretty genuine, isn't he? As I say, not getting any younger, but he's still racing really well. And those sort of, you know, the second level good races are probably perfect.
Speaker 2It's 8.44. We'll come back and we'll wrap up the breakdown with all of your questions next here on Giddy Up. 0499 736 736. The number to text us on the Garrett's Horse and Hound text line.
Speaker 1This is Giddy Up. Here with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 20499 736 736 to join our conversation on the Garrett's Horse and Hound text line. We would love to hear from you. We've got about 10 or so minutes left with Gator for the Monday breakdown, which is always brought to you by Woodside Park, the home of celestial legend, brilliant in the Doncaster Bowl at Group 1 and tough in the round with Guineas at Group 1 level and Lower River, the devastating winner of the Group 1 Dubai World Cup, the son of Sire's sensation in the mischief. Always exciting to see these two-year-old racers and Johnny McArdle produced a good one to kick off proceedings at Flemington on Saturday.
Speaker 5They were followed by Bella Davina behind those Ancar up the centre of the track trying to launch a challenge and behind those horses, Silent Intent and behind them, Proverb, Marley Fushi, 250 metres to go up to Masandam. Then came Anka the Outsider, half length away but starting to close. Masandam had a kick on the inside, 100 metres to go though, drew about a length and a quarter in front of Marley Fushi and they were followed by Anka, and Masandam, nice and raw but won it by a length and a half.
Speaker 2Yeah, good performance by Masandam who found the fence for Jamie Mott and she looked in trouble, the clock tower, but she found a few lengths when it mattered most, Gator.
Speaker 4Yeah, look, she was the one that was probably the most new or green of the trials and what I thought was noteworthy was those trials were out past the middle of the track. So, two-year-olds out there going, what the hell's this? I've got no idea what I'm doing. And then when she found the rail, she was much more, and it's a very strictable statute. Still with a lot to learn. Still wanted to wobble around a bit. But won well in the end and softly. Lost the win. It was busy behind and obviously a heavy 10, still race one. Does cast some aspersions, or at least, that's the wrong word. Yes. Does put some, you know, some queries around the form. Because, you know, how many heavy 10s do you strike?
Speaker 2No. What did you make of the Sydney two-year-old racing? Any highlights there or horses that you want to be following?
Speaker 4Yeah, so there were a couple of neat wins. What I thought was most noteworthy, though, was the fillies in the gym crack were able to run, well, they ran slower times. Sorry. So it was the boys, the Flying Houdini, who ran significantly faster time than the fillies, despite a slower first 400. So had those races been run together, the boys were clearly superior. Very early days. So that's interesting.
Speaker 2Yeah, it is interesting. So I reckon we'll see some of the. I reckon a few of the trainers have changed the way that they go about getting their two-year-olds ready for the season. So we might see a few of them later on in the year or probably in the early part of next year, some of their better ones. Other horses that we need to be following from that Flemington meeting. Geez, the grey horse in the second race, one like a good thing. And Hanky Alpha that was scratched at the gates there at Mornington the other day. But Sydney Alderton's found another good one.
Speaker 4No, I agree. That was a really good win. I mean, I was reveled. Again, how many heavy tens are you going to get? But the win was totally dominant. So it clearly has panels on 78 grade and it wasn't an average 78 grade. So a lot to like there. The margins throughout the day, though, were significant, but this happened a lot on wet track. So just be mindful of that.
Speaker 2The grey race during the Flemington Carnival is the race that this horse was sent to Cindy for. So she might be too good for the grey race. We'll see what happens with her next start. What does Gator reckon of Zara? Can remember everyone bagging him during the autumn, but geez, he's owning the spring so far like he did last year. Can see him leading half yours to victory. That's from Gus.
Speaker 4Yeah, look, I think half yours is in the mix for sure. Corfew Cup, I think 57 and a half is okay, considering how dominant he was last year in the race. He'd love a wet track in a wet Corfew Cup, though, wouldn't he?
Speaker 2Yeah. 100% he would. If he gets a wet track for the Corfew Cup, he's a big chance. He's already a big chance. He's a clear second favourite now for the Corfew Cup. Hey, Gareth, how do you rate, in Gator, how do you rate our weight for age middle distance horses? We haven't had a lot, even when Winx was beating up on handicappers.
Speaker 4Yeah, look, you play with the cards, you do, don't you? There's a couple of A-plussers, you know, Autumn Glow, she's an alibi, but outside of that, there's probably not a lot between a lot of them. And the margins in these races are proving that.
Speaker 2Yeah. So, Delius is a good horse. Like, I reckon he's ready to go third up in the Cox Plate. So, I think sometimes we can be too quick to judge these type of horses. But I can understand where that question's coming from. About Autumn Boy, after failing to fire in a massive handicap field, do you still push Autumn Boy towards a brutal race like the Cox Plate or do you drop him in grade and get his confidence back? Well, I reckon he will be going to. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. He'll be going to the Golden Eagle. Yeah. He can't win a Golden Eagle anyway after what we saw, you reckon, in Epsom?
Speaker 4He hasn't been able to get near shooting alibi anyway, but he's got some mates in that regard. But I thought he was semi-forgivable on Saturday, back to the rail. They weren't winning there.
Speaker 2What did you make of the Epsom gator?
Speaker 4The winner was unbelievable. Exact comment, our best roughy in the race. God's window and exploded over the top of them with 50 kilos. It was difficult to miss the run of Cherrywolf. They were 59, speaking of good middle-distance horses. So we'll see what his next target is. He probably has to clash with the good one again, though, doesn't he?
Speaker 2He goes to the King Charles. The blinkers go on there because it was interesting listening to Joe Pryde during the week. He goes, well, he's going far better than he was last spring. We don't need to put the blinkers on him because I don't need to find the two or three lengths that I needed to find last spring because he can't go much better than he is at the moment. Yeah. But there's probably. There's probably, you know, there's a little bit of improvement in him. Now, do I waste it on the Epsom where at 59 history tells you it's difficult to win? Or do I save it for the King Charles and try and get that extra improvement that I need to beat Autumn Glow? So that's the way he's going. I'd love to see him in a Cox Plate. Like, he likes fast-run races. It would have been interesting to see what he would have done over the 2000. I know he's got to go to 2000, but what he would have done in a turn, but with the way that that race was run.
Speaker 4Yeah, it would have been interesting. It's a question I don't have an answer to, but I think that the Cox Plate's open this year. So I'd be certainly looking at that. And he did give Autumn Glow a bit of a scare last time, didn't he, without the blinkers? Yeah. So, go on.
Speaker 2Yeah, he's flying. He went under Tommy Kitt and he finished fourth. Do we know where Jenny is going? She's going to the Empire Rose. I don't think they'll go to a Cox Plate. Yeah. Hi, Gators. Should I be worried about Saran and the Coolfield? Coolfield Cup. That's from Andrew.
Speaker 4Oh, look, I'm happy to forgive the run on Saturday. Very wet track. Turnbull. Yeah, so happy to overlook and go on his previous run.
Speaker 2Good morning. Hi, Gator. What do you think about Hanky Alpha's run and what time did she run from Quinney and Oakley? You were impressed there. Obviously, she was.
Speaker 4Yeah, well, the margin. Yeah, margin was great. Clearly, a dynamite wet tracker. I mean, just look at that horse revel in the ground. As to how many super wet tracks we get. You know, it's the asterisk on all of this. But couldn't have done any more than he did. That's for sure.
Speaker 2Yeah. Morning, Garth and Gator. Thought the Clessey Boulevard was a tad stiff not to finish close from the Epsom. After having nowhere to go, any thoughts on the race they may target with her? Enjoy the show. Keep up the good work. That's from Chris.
Speaker 4Yeah, I think she's going well, that horse. Yeah, she could be an Empire Rose horse type. Yeah. Yeah. Yep.
Speaker 2Can you ask if Charville should go the Cox Plate over the King Charles? You can do both. I think that Joe Pride will go to the King Charles. King Charles and then to the Champions Mile Gator.
Speaker 4Yeah, right. Yeah, look at this. The door's open. They've got the horse airborne. So, wherever they target, he's on the radar for me.
Speaker 2Yeah. Big Sky needs an Operation Gator. Your thoughts there?
Speaker 4Yeah, look, he, it's probably, I'll leave that to smarter people than me. I mean, it's possible. It was a very wet track, though, again.
Speaker 2Yeah. Trombolt and the Caulfield Guineas. What do you think, Gator?
Speaker 4Yeah, well, he's got a lot of power. Yeah, his profile's similar to a few who have won that race in the past. The problem is, he's got to make a lot of ground up on wall over.
Speaker 2Yeah. I tell you what, I apologise if you're watching racing.com. I've got bad hay fever today. Have you ever got hay fever? I've really never had hay fever. My eyes are watering. Bloody, it's unbelievable. I've rang mum up to give me some tablets. Does anyone have any advice for me with hay fever?
Speaker 4Yeah, do the nasal spray one. That's the best. It used to be prescription, and now you can get it over the counter. It works for me. But everyone's different.
Speaker 2It feels like you're making me cry all the time, Gator, which you usually do. You're such an emotional man. I am. So, Caulfield Guineas, Trombolt, we just talked about that. Will the next time we see Lindemann in Melbourne be at Living Legends? A hundred percent. I think he's already headed home, Lindemann. Yeah, right. A few more questions coming through. What did you make of well-written Gator?
Speaker 4Pulled up, mate.
Speaker 2Yeah, so forgive. Yep. Attica, never again. That's a bit harsh from David.
Speaker 4No, but they need better tactics than that, and the horse didn't help himself either. So, look, if you're in the 1-1 trial, and then you attack the lead mid-race, how many of them win? I'm going to go with nought.
Speaker 2Yeah. Contempted beat-carrying rising Gator.
Speaker 4No. Is there any word? Not in a horse race. So, not in a horse race, because she's not fast enough. Yeah. But she'll go back, and he'll be up on speed. I'm just picturing a scenario where, you know, they all sort of try and drive him mad, and she sits back giggling, and then produces that electric turn of foot that she's got. Yeah. Is the only thing I can imagine. But even then, I think he's too – he's got to absorb that pressure too well, I think. I think it's a bridge too far, bless her.
Speaker 2Yeah, God bless her. But it gives us something anyway. Yeah, it does. It gives us some type of hope. It does. Someone was asking me, like, she'll beat him now. I said, unless he does a hamstring. And he trials tomorrow. Touch wood. We don't want that to happen. That's what they needed Black Caviar to do in the UK, and she did that. She did a hamstring. Yeah, she still beat him. Like Dane Sorko playing that first half with a hamstring injury. Yeah. I've got 30 seconds, Gator. We love your work. Any winners today?
Speaker 4Oh, God, no. No, not today. But looking forward to Wednesday, mate, and then bring on Saturday.
Speaker 2You're God's window. There's no doubt about that, Gator. You have a wonderful day. Hopefully, Gil can put you in a good position. You're in a warmer place.
Speaker 4Oh, come on. Next time you're in Flemington.
Speaker 2Thanks, mate. Ciao. There's David Gately there for the Monday breakdown. It's quickly approaching 8.58 on the other side of it. Bob Peters will be joining me. Looking forward to that after his superstar cosmic crusade. It was too good in the Turnbull.

Speaker 2it's pikey todd andrew leak after the race and well done to andrew that was her first group one he just destroyed them and he's champion owner breeder bob peters joins us now here on giddy up bob congratulations yeah thank you um what did you make of that performance did it surprise you how well he went
Speaker 11oh yes from you know the way he's been racing yeah he's done quite a good job over there but he'd been beaten his last two starts so it was good to see and it was good to see that he handled that distance well yeah
Speaker 2he went to a new level did andrew leak give you an explanation for that
Speaker 11uh no not necessarily i've been you know i talk to every day and we work out what we're going to do with him and uh he was i think you know getting to that distance might have helped
Speaker 2a bit yeah and uh um i was listening to her comments and um listening to pikey's comments as well he seemed to be a little bit more edgy there on saturday is that how you saw him in the yard as
Speaker 11well bob oh yes he doesn't like getting beaten you know he's been copying a bit of uh flack over his rides in melbourne so this uh you know sort of all that out for him i think
Speaker 2yeah um when do you make this decision about the caulfield cup because um you went close to 1988 didn't you bob that still eats you alive they tell me
Speaker 11oh three developed prints and yeah forever and those congressmen yes the
Speaker 2horse we're talking about yeah there was three
Speaker 11callers on course and they all called him as winning and everyone was patting me on the back and uh all the rest of it but that's the way it goes and the loneliest place i found out is that second uh stall at um caulfield if you've been beaten there was a probably 50 or 100 pressman and photos going everywhere next stall and i was standing there on my own and the gender came down and then uh then john mcgrath he was a reporter in those days for the west he came over and had a chat but that was all there was for
Speaker 2us yeah john mcgrath he's a politician now isn't he bob yes he was uh he was a minister for racing for a while yeah um so um so that was a caulfield cuppa back in 88 um did you think you'd won that day uh yes i did
Speaker 11because you know he flew home he got caught up on the corner uh darren gouchy rode him and i sat with darren at lunch a couple of weeks ago and we were discussing it and he said you know he told me he still got caught up on the corner i said i know that and um he took off and uh he was flying home down the outside um so we
Speaker 2all know that you'd love to win a caulfield cup and a cox plate which one do you want to win most bob
Speaker 11well that's what i have to decide i'd like to win anything at that level so which way would you go do you know what i
Speaker 2was talking to your grandson the other day bob lamb um and he said he's going to remind the old boy about northerly back in 2002 bob um you don't mind backing up your horses why can't you do that oh well you
Speaker 11never know yes i want to
Speaker 2know box i want to back him for the caulfield cup um when will you make when will you make your mind up
Speaker 11oh i i think just want to wait another day or two because uh you know we just see how he he's he's pulled up pretty good so um so far things are good watching that that's there's a lot yeah sorry there's a lot to consider you know those international horses are very hard to beat uh wherever you go yeah i just wanted to have a look and see if there's any japanese ones in the uh cox plate because they they seem to dominate around that distance don't they yeah
Speaker 2no japanese bob no japanese this year there's only the one coming out for the melbourne cup that's good yeah so um who do
Speaker 11you talk to do you talk
Speaker 2to andrea do you have form guys that you'll have a chat to regarding this and i guess um watching like you know better than anyone bob you've had so much success planning out your horses campaigns over the years and the breeding you know back the front but watching him on saturday in that fast run um turnbull stakes would you have any concern of him getting a strong 2400 only a slight
Speaker 11one i think that i've got the feeling that he will but you never know it is
Speaker 2no you never know um but i guess you never knew if you'd get a strong 2000 meters if if you had a horse like a light infantry man take off like he did and he lapped it up the faster that went the better he went
Speaker 11is uh well i think a couple of those horses who hadn't reached their peak yet so they're they're around the place as well once it ran you know the placings
Speaker 2with him yeah um tell us a little bit about his story bob cosmic crusader obviously he's by maurice the superstar japanese sire yes a bit
Speaker 11of a story there i won't go into that with john wasara and i having a discussion and uh it was over conditions and things but anyway we uh we couldn't agree on that so the mayor finished up going to new zealand for a season and one i think it was only one season and one or two and i brought it back after that um so that's why he's got mz after his name because he was actually an australian mayor and a stadium standing in australia but the fold was fold in
Speaker 2new zealand okay um and so you had the sheets with john wasara so you moved him to new zealand or moved her to new zealand bob you're telling us
Speaker 11we we couldn't agree on something but the next year he came back and he said i've changed to what you wanted because you know i think
Speaker 2you're right yeah big for john to say yes yes um why do you like this sire oh well he sort of suits me
Speaker 11you know they're sort of um um you know horses that we breed um i think he's you know he's a good you know good strong sort of sire he seems to be able to get horses that have a little bit of um speed in them as well so yeah
Speaker 2he suits
Speaker 11us yeah and um so
Speaker 2he's pulled up nice then after that turnbull stakes victory yes yes he's
Speaker 11good at the moment yeah and then you'll
Speaker 2just weigh it up with andrew and um you wouldn't be scared to back him up if you if he does pull up all right okay like would you be like is it doable to do a caulfield cup and cox plate in the same season
Speaker 11uh you'd have to be very good and And, you know, you have to be very good, I think, to do that.
Speaker 2Yeah. So we'll just wait with bated breath then, Bob, to see where he goes after this, but a decision the next day or so. Yeah, which is exciting, Bob. Like, I know you've had some good horses over the time and the Cox Plate with the Katie Queen is the race that you wanted to win and you won a lead-up race. I think you won the Might and Power with her and she was pretty good in a Cox Plate. But do you think this fella could be better than her?
Speaker 11Oh, I'd have to prove that at this stage. She was very unlucky in the Cox Plate.
Speaker 2Yeah. But that happens. It rained that day, didn't it, I reckon, if I can recall.
Speaker 11Yeah, it's not. I learned a bit about the Cox Plate that day. There's a sort of a funnel. If you're on the inside or the outside, you can sort of get through. But if you're in the middle of the field, they seem to come from the outside and the inside. side and squeeze you out.
Speaker 2Yeah. It'll be a different ball game, however, I reckon, at Flemington this year.
Speaker 11Yes, definitely. Yeah.
Speaker 2And I reckon your bloke just lapped up Flemington as well.
Speaker 11Yes, it did super suit him, didn't it?
Speaker 2Yeah, I thought he was excellent. It's clockwork. Bob was impressive there the other day, first up. Could she be your railway horse if you can get her in?
Speaker 11She's got a long way to go to make that sort of level, yeah.
Speaker 2Yeah, but you said that last year about Cosmic Crusader.
Speaker 11Yes, well, you never know. Yeah. She hasn't got much time to build up to that sort of level.
Speaker 2No, no, she was good there the other day, first up. Well, Bob, congratulations. Always great to see you in Melbourne, but that was a sensational victory by Cosmic Crusader and we'll wait and see what you do with him. So a decision the next couple of days.
Speaker 11Yeah, we have to, because we've got to work out his work, what he's going to do, so can't wait much longer.
Speaker 2What's Andrea want to do?
Speaker 11She hasn't said, no. She leaves all that to me.
Speaker 2Yeah. All right, then. Thanks for that, Bob. Thank you. Bye. There's Bob Peters there. I tried. I tried. I don't know, Paulie Sebastiani, what did you learn regarding all of that? I reckon the Caulfield Cup is a big chance. I think he wants to win both races. Um, but I reckon there's a chance that he would go to the Caulfield Cup.
Speaker 12I'll tell you what my highlight of the interview was, Gareth, him asking you whether or not you would go to a Caulfield Cup like Cox.
Speaker 2I haven't taken the $16 yet, Bob. If I did, I would be going to the Caulfield Cup.
Speaker 12He was very, very happy. Very happy, Bob. How can you not be when you won a group one race at, at Fleamton? He just tanked up Cosmic Crusader, didn't he? He went past them like a really, really good thing. Conditions to suit and a beautiful ride by William Pike. He was a great guy. He proved some doubters wrong and Bob Peters is up and about. So we get a decision in the next day or two, which is great.
Speaker 2I was just hoping that like, I know Bob doesn't give too much away. Um, and he's a man of few words, Uncle Bob, but I thought, well, I might as well have a crack to see if I can get something out of him today regarding the Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate. Now, I know he says you need a really good horse to do both, but I wouldn't rule that out. He doesn't mind backing up his horses as well. So we'll find out the first, um, so hopefully he'll tell me and then I'll tell him. I'll tell you straight away.
Speaker 12He's got a really, really good horse. And just judging by the tone of how he was speaking, that the cogs are definitely ticking over in his mind as to whether or not they go to the Caulfield Cup. He's definitely considering it. Yeah. Definitely. Yeah. It's a live, live chance.
Speaker 2Correct. So, um, he's like, yeah, he's going to be hard to beat in whatever race he goes to, but he'll be favoring the Caulfield Cup if they go down that path. I was listening to the Newton boys as well. You can't back him. Even though that's a good horse. $16 looks great. You can't back him. Um, unless you, you know, that he's going there.
Speaker 12You're happy to take the risk with a 50 or a hundred.
Speaker 2I've done that before.
Speaker 12I'm being burnt.
Speaker 2So yeah, like.
Speaker 12I'll give you some insurance, mate. There you go. I'll give you some insurance. I'll get you a dinner if they, if he doesn't go there.
Speaker 2And it's up to the punters out there. Do you take the punt and try and read Bob's mind? Um, but yeah, I've got a few spies trying to see if they can get more out of you than I have today at the trials there at Lark Hill. So I'll see how I go.
Speaker 12You did a great job.
Speaker 2All right, then we're going to take a break. Mark Sarr is just unavailable today. So that's not good, but, um, Santa Grima is, so she'll have a chat to us after she won her first group one with a God's window in the famous Epsom handicap there on Saturday.
Speaker 1Text us on 0499 736 736 live across Australia.
Speaker 13Now, Autumn Boy back in the field is starting to come off the fence, looking to improve. Fully lit shows the way here from Attica. Then Mr. Miller, followed by Matt Chalade, well-written, working into the clear. The New Zealand mayor is running on. Further back to Tom Kitten and Autumn Boy right up the inside. Fully lit, just the leader. Mr. Miller's got the run. And here's God's window. My goodness, God's window. Spread it out for Sienna Grima. God's window won the Epsom, beating Chael Wolfe.
Speaker 14Third position. Yeah, there's so many happy people. Just to see. Just to see this happen. And, yeah, I think we're all very proud. What was your first thoughts when she walked into your stable? You could just tell she's going to make it. Yeah. Yeah. Now, I'm getting emotional for her. I've already spoken to Darren. Yeah, and he's in tears. So that's what it means to us. Yeah. She was hungry. She wanted to learn. Yeah, she just never wavered. Just, just, just, just, tough's not the right word. But she's just. She's just solid. She's just an amazing horse person. And she's just, she's there every morning. She's the same person every day. She's for her age. Like, she's a, like, she's one of the real professional athletes.
Speaker 2So that's Chris Waller talking about his apprentice, Sienna Grima. In her first ride, she took out her first, she won in her first group one ride. She won aboard God's window. And that famous Epsom mile. And it was some, some performance, some story because of the apprentice winning the great handicap. And Sienna joins us here on Giddy Up. Congratulations, Sienna. When you hear something like that from the champion trainer, Chris Waller, how does that make you feel?
Speaker 15It is something I would never imagine. You know, Chris is so highly regarded and such an amazing person and trainer. And to have him say things like that about me is just incredible.
Speaker 2Yeah, how are you feeling on the Monday now, two days after living your dream by winning a group one?
Speaker 15It was lovely. I went into the stables this morning for track work and everyone just congratulated me and told me what a wonderful job I did. And to have the support of the staff as well, it's just been amazing.
Speaker 2They tell me your old man, Mick, he didn't want you to be a jockey. Now, what's he, what's he saying after you win that group one?
Speaker 15He was, he was very pleased for me. He was sad he couldn't be there, but I told him, I'm sure there's plenty more to come.
Speaker 2Were you confident going into the, to the Epsom?
Speaker 15I was, to be honest. I was telling everyone, I thought he was a proper good chance. I knew there was some really nice horses in the race, but I thought the lightweight, the Randwick mile really brought him into it.
Speaker 2Yeah. So when did you start to get confident?
Speaker 15I probably. I probably got confident as I started to make my move around the 700. Um, he just was traveling really well. He'd had a really easy first half of the race and I thought if I can get clear running here, he's going to really show them.
Speaker 2Yeah. And then he put them away before you, before you knew it, really. You're a winner a long way from home there, Sienna.
Speaker 15As I said, in my interview, I had a lovely cart out by Plymouth and it was traveling better than I thought it would. So I was more than happy. I was more than happy to stay with it for a little while. And when I got my clear running and he was still building and really showing a nice turn of foot and I looked across and I was absolutely flying.
Speaker 2Yeah. Um, he's been, of course, he's a former import and he's, he's been performing really well for the Waller camp. A couple of really good judges were tipping him at 40 to one. I guess, do you know where he goes next now, Sienna? And do you keep the right?
Speaker 15Um, I'm not a hundred percent sure where he goes next. If he does, I'll be finding out as soon as I can and begging Chris to stay on.
Speaker 2And so how does that go then? Obviously you're Chris's apprentice. When did you realize that you're on God's window for the Epson?
Speaker 15Uh, Darren told me at Warwick Farm Trials about three weeks before the Epson. Yeah. Uh, he wanted to give me plenty of notice just so I could ride the 50 and do so while still being mentally all good to go.
Speaker 2Yeah. And how did you do that then? Was that difficult?
Speaker 15Uh, it wasn't actually too bad. Um, with track work every day, I could lose a little bit of weight and I had a lot of race rides and trials coming through. So I managed to do it pretty easily.
Speaker 2Yeah. Um, what was the, what was the, what were your nerves like on race day? Was it any different to any other race day or because it was the group one year, you had a few more butterflies than normal?
Speaker 15I was surprisingly really calm. Yeah. I was really excited to ride. Um, I was really excited to ride the group one year, I was really excited to ride the group two year, and I was really excited to ride the group three year. up I was so nervous and I thought it was so surprising that in a group one for Chris I was completely
Speaker 2calm yeah wonder why that is I don't
Speaker 15know I think it was just because I was quietly confident in my horse and Chris really helped put my nerves at ease just telling me to have a fun
Speaker 2time and enjoy it yeah and Darren Beeman obviously works closely with Chris Waller as part of his team now and then he's your coach in a way as well like what kind of advice did he give you there on race day I was a little
Speaker 15worried I thought Darren was actually going to be there I didn't know he was going to be in Flemington yeah so when I realized he wasn't there I got a bit nervous but I managed to get a phone call with him and he told me just have an easy first half he he's quite tricky to ride and can get on the bit and pull so if we can get him switched off and asleep that first half he's going to be there and I'm going to be there and I'm going to be there and I'm going half you've got 50 kilos and you know you've got a good horse under you and just see what happens
Speaker 2he's a pretty good coach to have on game day really isn't he DB I mean one of the greatest of all times is he is he as good as coaches as he
Speaker 15was rider he is he is he asks me first what I think about the races and sees if I've done my homework first and then he gives me his input as well but he just he helps point out things that I wouldn't even think about or just to see if we're on the same page and it's so helpful
Speaker 2to have yeah um and has it changed in a way like what what was your response by what was the response like from your fellow participants there's a few jockeys watching the replay that congratulated you after the line but um back home in your hometown as well as well there Sienna what's it been like
Speaker 15it's been incredible when I came back into the room it was like a lineup all the jockeys in there were standing there waiting to give me a hug and tell me congratulations which was so lovely to have the support from them as well and my phone was just blowing up I had people messaging me from back home from Tamworth from everywhere just saying how proud they were of me and to have that support is just been amazing it's
Speaker 2bloody sensational and um like winning a race like that and a big handicap I would imagine might just give you a few more opportunities I reckon there's a couple of big handicap races coming up in Sienna have you asked the boss if you can if you get an opportunity that you could head to Melbourne maybe for a ride in a Caulfield Cup or even a the Great Melbourne
Speaker 15Cup I would love a Melbourne Cup ride um hopefully there's some that I can get in with a lightweight as well but I think now Chris will feel a bit more comfortable giving me some good group rides
Speaker 2yeah James Johnson he's the young kid from Tasmania that's done a really good job here in like you can see the excitement on his face he won on Mr Monaco in the Bart Cummings which is a golden ticket race into the Melbourne Cup and I think he gets his chance now to ride in the Melbourne Cup and um he was speechless I reckon and um yeah I think that's it is it is it your dream to ride in a Melbourne Cup is that the one race that you would love to win
Speaker 15Sienna absolutely ever since I was a kid I've always wanted to ride in the Melbourne Cup and I did get to watch Jabba's win the group three and I was really happy for him I've seen him riding and just absolutely cleaning up down there so it was great for us to get group
Speaker 2wins yeah it was a good day for the apprentices um Jackson Radley rode Plymouth in the fourth there in the in the Epsom so um it's good for Australian racing and you've got some rides today so there's no stopping now Sienna just keeps on going obviously a public holiday in Sydney today you've got Palm Tree and uh Poker Jack do you think any of those two could win there this afternoon
Speaker 15I wouldn't be surprised if either of them would win to be honest uh Palm Tree run a really good race last start and gets in with a nice weight and a good draw and Poker Jack's always there abouts he never stops trying so I'm looking
Speaker 2forward to both today well Sienna well done everyone was so happy a lot of great text messages coming through there congratulating you on that victory on Saturday um it'll be the first of many group ones I've got no doubt about that but we appreciate your time and good luck this afternoon
Speaker 15thank you so much for having me
Speaker 2Sienna Grima the winning jock there in the Epsom the winners in the first ride tasting success at group one level it was one of the best stories all weekend it's 9 26 this is giddy apple thanks to bet 365 we'll come back with plenty more the Monday means test isn't far away on this Monday
Speaker 1join the conversation text us on 0 4 9 7 3 6 7 3 6 live across Australia this is giddy up with Gareth Hall
Speaker 2welcome back to giddy up this man's been all over it over there well he's been a he's been a great find for racing.com Trent Mason how to breaking all of the news there's been some news already out of um Trent Mason how does social media account today regarding that Damien Lane picks up that ride on pretty baby in the thousand guineas obviously Jamie Mellon has decided to go to Sydney on Everest Caulfield Cup day so she's given up the ride on half yours Mark Sara takes over and then she had the right to go to Sydney on Everest Caulfield Cup day so she's given up the ride on pretty baby in the thousand guineas and our D Lane takes the ride on that good South Australian filly I think he's ready to go Trent he joins us now here on giddy up g'day Trent
Speaker 6morning G what was
Speaker 2your highlight from the weekend
Speaker 6oh it was probably the track to be honest I can't believe we just the way we got through the meeting and to get two upgrades um was quite remarkable I'm certainly no track walker but I went out onto the track when I got there at about 10 30 and I think we did a good job I think we did a good job I think we did a good job but I think we did a good job I think we did a good job I think we did a good job I think we did a good job I think we did a good job it was remarkable and it played really well the racing was sensational um so I know it's a great day I really love the win of the next episode I've been number one
Speaker 2ticket holder yeah yeah
Speaker 6about six months ago I said I reckon he could be the best three-year-old cold in the land and I got a bit uh nervous there when he had a couple of trials in Sydney and he wasn't performing so it's good to see him come out and do that on
Speaker 2Saturday yeah he's a favorite as expected now for the for the cool more he's going to be mighty hard to beat there but I thought the filly was excellent as well so um yeah it's going to be a good cool more this year the big talking point still out of Saturday in a way is like what does Bob do with Cosmic Crusader we just had him on the show just before he didn't give me too much but I wouldn't rule out the Caulfield Cup I wouldn't rule it out I thought oh there's no chance you'll go to a Caulfield Cup but the more I talk to people um you know I reckon he's a chance to go to Caulfield in a few weeks time
Speaker 6yeah I agree I think there's every chance that uh he goes to a Caulfield Cup did you did you I'm not sure if you did you ask the question whether they
Speaker 2could do both yeah 100% yeah he goes he has to be a good horse Gareth but Bob doesn't mind backing up his horses yeah um and that's how he prepares him and that's why he likes to send him to trainers like Andrea Leak um they've got the facilities that he wants them to be trained at and he's had the grounding to have a a big campaign he did that in the first place and he's had the grounding to have a big campaign he did that in the first place and he's had the grounding to have a big campaign he did that when he was in Perth last time around um like he had four runs in five weeks basically and over different distances obviously these are longer trips that he'll be competing at say in a Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate and against better opposition but what a horse he is Cosmic Crusader so um he was totally
Speaker 6dominant there on Saturday I didn't expect it I didn't think he he was that good um especially on the the heavy deck I was leaning towards Aliana and Sir Delius giving their exposed form on the wet but I know Willie was very confident um on the ground and uh in terms of moving forward gee I was chatting to a younger member of the Peters family yesterday a very fine young man who's coming through the industry and he said he was going to remind um Mr Bob Peters that uh of North East Deeds back in 2002 wasn't it so yeah I think I think there's every chance that the double could be on the cards
Speaker 2so we'll know in the next 24 hours I would imagine um the other Caulfield Cup news half yours has got a new rider in Mark Zahra he's the second favorite behind Zahra for the race
Speaker 6yeah that's right so big decision from Jamie Mellon I spoke to her manager yesterday Lockie Weekly yeah and said yeah it's very obviously a very tough decision for Jamie to make given her association with that horse and what horses uh what that horse has done for her career and vice versa but she's opted to go to Sydney to ride Blue Door the speedy filly in the Everest so uh pretty handy replacement there in Mark Zahra keep looking there for the rest of the race. So the McEvoy team and uh I thought he ran pretty well there uh I wait for age again on Saturday it's going to be hard given the the weight that he's going to have to carry this year but I reckon he's in pretty good form half yours he'll appreciate the step up in trip and a bit of cutting the ground if he gets that um and then as you mentioned in the intro there uh the fallout continues with that Jamie Mellon for going that ride on Pretty Baby in the Thousand Guineas so Damien Lane goes aboard her uh that filly which is uh yeah good ride for Damien Lane she's one of the favorites in the Thousand Guineas.
Speaker 2There's been a few text messages coming through this morning um saying geez imagine the uproar if Jamie got sacked off half yours instead of yeah she's sacking half yours herself so um I think people next time a jockey gets taken off a horse they should just remember that I reckon.
Speaker 6No and this was the point that I was making a couple of weeks ago gee when Matty Cartwright lost the ride on Well Written and I know this doesn't have implications for Matt Cartwright he's not involved in this but my point was that it does go the other way it's not just a matter of time. um connections that boot jockeys off jockeys often change their minds and um move horses as well and that's a big part of it. It's a case in point here. So, no, we wish Jamie all the very best in Sydney. As I said, it would have been a very tough call, but, yeah, a lot of money involved with Nevers, so you can certainly understand her reasoning as to why. Just in terms of field for today, the Scalacci is going to be an absolute ripper, I reckon. Obviously, we've got the three Group 1s. Not the strongest two-rack I've ever seen, I must say. But the Scalacci, you're going to have Ray Magnerio, Jigsaw, Streisand, likely Point Barrow, flying for funds coming down from Sydney. It's going to be a really good Group 2 sprint.
Speaker 2Yeah, Scalacci, the Scalacci's a beauty, and I reckon Jigsaw's going to be mighty hard to beat if he just turns up into that form that saw him win a Quokka. The Caulfield Giddies, who's your selection there?
Speaker 6I'm sticking with the Victorian Blind Rays. OK. Home ground advantage. I had a good chat to Natalie Young this morning. Horses in great shape. They're hoping for a good draw. Nat gets to draw the barrier tomorrow. Good pilot on board. He's got the runs on the board here in Victoria. Step up to a mile, no trouble. Yeah, hoping it's a good race. Hopefully Warwoven can bring that form down here and show some of that form he showed in Sydney. Just away from that G in terms of fields again for Saturday. Mulban's a chance of running, I believe, on Saturday, either in the Might Power or the Urban Power State. So he's another one I didn't have in my likely fields yesterday that might be seen at Caulfield on Saturday.
Speaker 2He's a forgotten horse a little bit more, man. There's a few text messages coming through this morning. Where is he? But thanks for that information. You know, who rides Warwoven in the Chirac?
Speaker 6Good question. I believe Craig Williams. This is unconfirmed. I believe Craig Williams is going to ride one of Kieran's. I've only got Warwoven as the lone representative for Kieran Marr having spoken to the stable on Saturday. So it might be Warwoven, but don't hold me to it.
Speaker 2And we'll have a few more horses come through regarding the slots, I reckon, for the Everest. So Tempton will be locked up by Godolphin. I think Savvy Howley will be locked up by Mulberry. Cool morning. Made a new horse after Guesthouse went amiss with a hamstring injury.
Speaker 6Yeah, just on that, G, just on that. Do you think there's any chance they could reconsider their plans for St. Gothard, given that he was going to come down fresh into the cool more? Do you think they could pivot and run him in their slot?
Speaker 2I think that they would see if anyone wants to buy their slot to tell you the truth, Coolmore. Yeah. At the moment, yeah. Yeah, okay. I don't think they'll run St. Gothard in an Everest, no.
Speaker 6I'd be very surprised if Angel Capital's not running for you long. He's in that mini Everest. He's going to be on trial tomorrow at Randwick. So I think that's a pretty strong lead that he's going to run for them.
Speaker 2All right. Then anything else before we let you go?
Speaker 6No, that's about it, mate. I'm about to just head up the road. I'm at Cranny. I'm just about to head up the road to chat to me good mate, Robbie Griffiths, to see how Ray Magnero is getting on ahead of his first run there in the Scolacis.
Speaker 2Good on you, Al. You kept on dominating. Thanks, mate. There's Trent Mason. How do the means test coming up next?
Speaker 1A conversation, text us on 04009736736. Live across Australia, this is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 2Gareth Hall with you. Gareth, have you made contact with Mark Hunter after Cosmic Crusader's brewing group one win? I've talked to Mark, the great man. I think he is a fan now. He's always been a fan of Cosmic Crusader, but I think as Gator pointed out, I don't think everyone, like there's a few people that were surprised how well he went there in a Turnbull stadium. Stakes on Saturday. Difference being there are actually two committed options for Jamie Mellon. Not like she's dumped half yours. Silly take. That's from Don. Well, agree to disagree, Don. Gee, did you say Mark Sarr is riding half yours in the Caulfield Cup? Yes, 100%. Is there any possible chance Warwoven will get that Everest slot? Doubtful, no. A few others coming through here. Sienna Greamer, what a lovely, lovely young lady she is. Superstar young rider and that will be first of many group ones. She rode up here at Tamworth and was well regarded. Always knew she was going to be something special. That's from Denise from Tamworth. Yep, she is a star. It's 9.40. Get in your text messages. Speaker 1Text us on 049-936-736. The Monday Means Test with Wayne Hawks and John O'Neill.
Speaker 2Time for the Monday Means Test. Wayne Hawks, a big hello to you. Morning, Gareth. How are you? I'm very well. And Johnny O'Neill, hello to you. Good morning, G. Let's get started. Let's start getting to the show. It's a busy show today. We're going to kick off with the King's Gambit.
Speaker 16No, no, no, no, no. I'm the King's Gambit man today. There's no. Hawksy, I don't know if you know this, but we don't do any of these production meetings. This is live. We all know that. Everyone outside of this studio knows that.
Speaker 2You wouldn't do this to Waitley and cut across and interrupt his King's Gambit.
Speaker 16Who? But who?
Speaker 2He still doesn't know who Johnny is.
Speaker 17He went past the window last week. This is a true story. He went past the window last week, waved at me, looked at Johnny, and Johnny waved. You know that look people give you when they have no idea who it is?
Speaker 18He still doesn't know who you are. That is correct. So I'm taking over the King's Gambit today,
Speaker 16and I'm starting
Speaker 17it off with. Who's this about?
Speaker 16Right, well, here we go. I've made a couple of comments a few weeks ago, and we might actually show those. So you're digging up your own receipts.
Speaker 2I'm digging. I'm digging up my own receipts.
Speaker 16I am. I've tried to get my hair done a little bit better today, because I've been worrying about people throwing rocks at me. I've got a. Paulie in the box shaved his beard off, thank God, and shaved his head, which is even better. So I've got a confession to make. I've made it blue.
Speaker 17All right, then.
Speaker 16I've made it blue.
Speaker 17Hang on, hang on. You're going yourself. Yeah, I'm going myself. Something you would never do, Wayne. I'm going myself. I'm going myself.
Speaker 16Good on you, Gareth.
Speaker 2Yeah, let's roll the tape. Let's roll the tape.
Speaker 16Great ride. Well done. Very nice horse. Will progress. Yes. But will not win a Group 1 over the spring. Cannot. I disagree with that. Cannot. Will progress. Very nice horse. If it's placed right, we'll keep winning. It's a lovely horse. Can't win a Group 1.
Speaker 2If a horse like Globe won a Group 1 last year in a mind power, well, it's a better horse than Globe, Cosmic Crusader.
Speaker 16So when it goes to the Memsie. Yeah, probably can't win that. Right. But it could win an Underwood. Oh, please, stop it. Are you serious? Yeah, well. Sir Dealey would pick it up and carry it. Well, who knows who's going there, you. Buckaroo will pick it up and carry it. Buckaroo, please. What's wrong? We got Pete in the nose in a Cox Plate last year. Yeah, I know, but Buckaroo. What's wrong with Buckaroo? Right. So what I've got to add here, G, because you're a big Perth man, we get this. So just to Peter's, I'm apologising refusely to the great man and to Pikey. Wow. What I will say is. Wow. a huge win. That race normally sets the spring up. Mm-hmm. Normally does. I had a look at the ratings after the race. They ran about three and a half or four lengths off. My figures, less than Sir Dealey's the previous year. But a great ride from Pikey. My horse, or our horse, set a ridiculous pace, or looked like it did. I thought he was. That's how you've got to ride him. Yeah, that is. That is how you've got to ride him. But what it basically highlighted is the weight for age horses that will be competitive in the Cox Plate. And as we said, it was going to be an open race this year without Sheezer and Autumn Glow. With the horses that performed as they should. The handicap is out the back, too far. Second rung back, couldn't make any ground. And I think when you were cornering, you know, people are talking about half yours and what a great run it was. If you have a look where that was, it was about a length behind Cosmic Crusader.
Speaker 2So we're going to play. I'll play you the replay of the Turnbull Stakes, Johnny, so you can watch it again. Here's Cosmic Crusader blitzing his rivals. I was going to use another word, but he destroyed his rivals, really, in the Turnbull Stakes. Stakes on Saturday.
Speaker 5Four-legged Sir Delius Cosmic Crusader starting to come on. And then came half yours. And Aliana is battling on. Light Infantryman at the 250. Cosmic Crusader's a big threat. The outsider gap, Sir Delius Aliana. Cosmic Crusader took the front at the 150. He takes the lead. Two-legs Light Infantryman. Then Sir Delius Aliana. But Cosmic Crusader, too strong. Won the Turnbull.
Speaker 16Light Infantryman. Massive win. A massive win. And what I was going to say is, I think around the 800, half yours was about a length and a half behind Cosmic Crusader. And it's got beaten six and a half or seven, I think, at the finish. So from a Cox Plate perspective, he's an absolute live chance. He's going to be in the top three or four in the market. I'm concerned about Sir Delius three weeks between runs, a mile to 2,000, heavy track, chasing a long way out. Just concerned. Just concerned he might be a bit flat third up. And, you know, maybe, I mean, the way that Gay trains is she's very, not going to say hard, but she's very fitness focused on those horses and really pushes them. So I'd be in a position. You might be sorry again. No, no, no. I mean, I love Gay and Adrian. They're unbelievable. But look, again, it'll be interesting to see. We're not talking personal. We're talking about Sir Delius. I wouldn't have thought that Sir Delius could turn the tables on Cosmic Crusader and the Cox Plate off that run. Really? No chance. No chance. No chance. No chance. Well, that's ridiculous. and I thought, um, and I would have thought Eliana will run a nice very early second, third or so in the Cox Plate and then go on and nearly win the Melbourne Cup. So who's the horse to beat in the Cox Plate? Oh, look, I think the horse that won the Turnbull. Cosmic Crusader. Can you say that? Cosmic Crusader and Birdman, in my opinion, are the horses to beat in the Cox Plate.
Speaker 17Wayne? No, I don't agree much with Johnny there, to be honest. So who's the horse to beat then in the Cox Plate? Well, if we just talk about the Turnbull first. Yeah. You're on a heavy track number one, right? So, so much of the format of Saturday is not going to stand up, OK? It's not going to stand up. Now, I'm not saying it won't, but there's going to be some races where some of these horses are not going to stand up. I've got a grab. Do we have the grab of my race in Sydney? Because I want to put this in perspective, right? This is Tyler Schiller on the Blade in the last. He was favourite on Saturday and he got beat 1.8 lengths. Yeah, terrific run. He's done a really good job. I just think the track was a little bit not in his favour. It was a bit soft, a bit shifty, and he just spun the wheels when I let him go. Right. So that was him in the last. Now, what's that got to do with it? If you don't like a wet track, you don't win. Now, if you go and look at Kira Marr's horse that won the Dane Hill. Yeah, the next episode. Now, it loved the wet track. If it hated the wet track, it wouldn't have done what it did. Now, I'm not bagging any horse here because we don't get to see some horses. At their best on rain-affected track. Now, obviously, Cosmic Crusader's probably hardly ever seen one coming from Western Australia. But yeah, no, I don't agree with you, Johnny. Serdelius did all the bullocking work. He was chasing a long way out. Every bastard's gone like bloody pride of Jenny now. Everyone wants to go out in front. Did you see Nastro Willer there the other day on Saturday? Yeah, yeah. He was 100 yards in front. That was in the midway. Yeah, correct. So I just reckon we need to be a little bit careful, a little bit careful. Well, Aliana wants to call. I know she's running the Cox Plate. Well, she's not going to the Caulfield Cup. Well, I don't care. You can't win the Caulfield Cup. I don't care what you say. It can run for, it can win the Melbourne Cup. She wants, she wants, well, maybe, maybe it might. It can win the Melbourne Cup. And that might be what their plan is. But she wants the Caulfield Cup. That's what she wants because she was still whacking to the line. The winner had it won half a mile from home and just loved those conditions. And the track played enormous for where we were. I mean, we've had so much rain, but we know that Flemington is the best track in the country. And it's quite amazing, isn't it? 12 months' time is getting ripped up. Because it's the end of his life. Tell you what, that was a, that was a, that was a track. Hey, it says a hell of a lot about, a hell of a lot about all the other tracks. What about the Werewolf?
Speaker 2Can it win the Cox Plate? Which one? We'll get to Char Wolf in just a moment, B. We've got someone on the line that's rung up. We don't usually take callers. We don't take callers. The great William Pike. Pikey, g'day, mate. Well done on the weekend. You stuck up a few there on Saturday. How's it going? Good, thanks, Pikey. What about that performance by Cosmic Crusader? Did he surprise you? How well he went?
Speaker 8No, not at all. He'd been going good the whole time. And, you know, some were quick to jump off. So, no, I was only in his corner. You're having a crack at me there, Pikey, eh?
Speaker 16It's unbelievable. Anyway, congratulations, mate. Good on you. You go on to the Cox Plate, hopefully. Here's some feedback from the WA fraternity for you, Johnny. Yeah, but, mate, I'm an original Sandgrave. I lived there a few years ago. Don't worry about me. I'm all over WA. But I didn't think it was that good. But Pikey was ranting and raving when we had him on last time. So, well done. Well done, mate.
Speaker 2Hey, Pikey, the question I've got for you, will he get 2,400 metres? Forget the Cox Plate.
Speaker 8Yeah, I think he will. I don't see a problem with it. Some were doubting whether he'd get 2,000. He got it on a rain-affected track. So, I can't see why he won't get 2,400. They've been prepped for it their whole lives. That's what Mr. Peters does with his horses. Yeah, they're prepped for it. There won't be a problem.
Speaker 2So, he's got to make a decision, Mr. Peters. I had a chat to Uncle Bob. Did you? Yeah, and he didn't give too much away. But he's got to make up his mind regarding, does he go to a Caulfield Cup or a Cox Plate or both? What would you do, Wayne? What would I do?
Speaker 17I'd run the Cox Plate. Could you do both? No. You can. You can, but could you at your best? No. No, I don't think you could. Now, I don't know the horse. From a pure training point of view, you've got to back up week to week. So, I don't know whether that horse would be tough enough to do it because they're two gut busters. Yeah. Yeah. And make no mistake, even when the great horses are winning the great races, they're gut busters every week. And times tell you that, that they're running home in track record time and they are dead set busting the guts. So, to run from week to week, there's only a very small amount of horses that you could do that with. And you know what? You need to pick one or the other because one of the biggest things is, it's not lied on, but my point is, you take away one or two horses, it becomes very, very thin. Has he raced on a wet track before, William? Yeah. Yeah, he's actually
Speaker 8got good wet track form. Good wet track form. Yeah, he managed a strike a year where there was actually a few wet tracks in WA. So, yeah, no, his wet track's good. That was his first on a heavy
Speaker 2track, basically, and he lapped it up. So, I don't think it was a true heavy track.
Speaker 8No. Not the way it rode.
Speaker 2No. How did it ride then, Pikey?
Speaker 8Yeah. Well, I think a few of the times suggested it wasn't in the nine range and I wasn't in the early races. It did upgrade by the time I got there. I was pleasantly surprised with how well it rode. I went out and walked it after race six and you wouldn't have known there'd been six races on it. It was fantastic. Yeah, credit to everyone who got it up and going, but I was really surprised with how good the ground was.
Speaker 2And what would you do, Pikey? Would you go the Caulfield Cup or a Cox Play?
Speaker 17Oh, that's a tough one, isn't it? Oh, come on. He's not going to say anything against Mr. Peters, are you? No, no. No, he's got – I have a spot
Speaker 8for the Cox Play. Yeah. At the same time, any of them would be amazing and fantastic, but if I could pick one, it would be a Cox Play.
Speaker 2He could do both. Could he do both, Pikey?
Speaker 8Yes, he could do both.
Speaker 2I reckon he'll do both. I reckon Uncle Bob will do – he'll give Fred a call, Fred Kersley, and he'll go, this is how you do it. What? Well, he did it with Northerly back in 2002. Seriously? Yeah. What do you want? Oh, well. You're saying this horse will like Northerly?
Speaker 17Well, I'm just saying that he – Oh, rubbish. Rubbish. But you can do it. Come on. He's hawksy.
Speaker 16He's on fire this morning. No, no, no. Pikey, as soon as you come on, he gets on a carriage belt.
Speaker 17Pikey. No, that's not true.
Speaker 2I'm just calling bullshit when I hear it. No, no, no. Talk some sense into Wayne. You tell Wayne why Cosmic Crusader could do it, Pikey.
Speaker 8Well, I think he actually pulls up fantastic after his races. He's deep into his campaign. He's fit enough. He was fit enough well before the weekend. So, yeah, I don't see why he couldn't. He'd just trot and canter and go in the water and, yeah, he'd be fresh enough. I think he'd – He'd enjoy it. He'd just be like, oh, another day out at the races. I know you don't like backing
Speaker 17up horses, Wayne, but some others do. No, that's not true. I reckon our record would be outstanding for the horses that do back up. All I'm saying is he's not northerly. No, no, no, no.
Speaker 2I didn't say he was northerly. Yes, you did. No, I didn't. I said he can try and do a northerly. There's a difference there, Wayne. Here we go.
Speaker 16One thing I do know is that no matter where they go with this horse – You don't want him to go to a Caulfield Cup, Johnny. No, no, no. Look, I mean, I think at the end of the day, no matter where they go, he's going to be really competitive. We called it out. If Sheezer's not running in these races at this stage, whether it be Cox Plates or whatever it may be, and Autumn Glow is not, there's four or five very nice wait-for-age horses. I'm not saying that they take turns in winning, but they're all very, very nice horses. And, you know, if Pikey can give it a ride like he did the other day and there's a bit of sting out of the ground, he could win either race without any doubt.
Speaker 2Was there a difference in his demeanour, Pikey, say, compared to Saturday than he was before the Underwood?
Speaker 8Yeah, I really do think he was up and about in the mounting yard. He was on his toes. By no means naughty or anything like that, but he actually had a bit of presence about him on the weekend, and that's why I said in my post-race, I like that version of him. He had a little bit of attitude there. It was good.
Speaker 16Yeah. And, Pikey, do you stay here now for the carnival, or do you go back home, or what are you doing?
Speaker 8No, I'll still fly back and forth. I'll still fly back and forth, keep the routine pretty well as standard. He was at Northern yesterday.
Speaker 16Yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, it's just wondering whether, I mean, you know, Caulfield Cup's a couple of weeks ago, two weeks to go, and then Cox Plate, so I just wondered whether he'd sit here and settle in and try to pick up a heap of other rides, or whether he just wants to come and pinch the cup and the Cox Plate and go back to Perth.
Speaker 8Yeah. That would be a perfect world. Just come and raid the fridge and then go again. Yeah. That's what Hawksy does.
Speaker 18He's a fridge raider. No, he's lost a bit of weight, Hawksy. Pikey used to do that at my place.
Speaker 17When he used to come and stay at my place, he'd raid the fridge. Sponsored by Country Road, Hawksy. Chocolate, Cadbury's chocolate, W.
Speaker 2Pike. That's his one bad vice. Pikey's staying on for a little while, but it's the daylight savings that kicked in, so it's only what, close to 7 o'clock there in Perth. I've got to take a break, and Pikey will stay with us, Hawksy, because I know you want to ask him another question. He's been good enough to join us, so don't go anywhere, Pikey. I'll make sure that I give you some cash for hanging on the line for so long today, but I appreciate it. Yeah, Hawksy, he's got plenty. Yeah, yeah, yeah. 0499-736-736 to join our conversation on the Garrod's Horse and Hound text line. Speaker 2This is the Monday Means Test on Giddy Up. Yeah, great to have your company wherever you may be listening on SGN Track, RSN 927 if you're listening to us on the podcast a little later on, if you're watching us on racing.com or later on on YouTube. It is great to have your company. It's been some start to the means test. Our special guest is William Pike joining Wayne Hawks, joining O'Neill and Gareth Hall. And Hawks, you've got a question here for Pikey.
Speaker 17Yeah, in your post-race, Wizard, you actually gave yourself up and said, you know, you're right a couple of starts ago. I reckon you're being too harsh on yourself. I don't care what anyone says. I reckon you're being way too harsh on yourself.
Speaker 8Oh, yeah, maybe. All I know is I didn't come away with the win that day, so someone has to be blamed, and I don't mind.
Speaker 17No, that's not fair. That's not fair on you. You don't have to be blamed because the horse, you know, you were closer and was a different.
Speaker 2No, do you know what? I think he's been. Modest? No, well, I think he's been proved right over his last couple of starts, especially. He's a horse just better. He's left alone and then come with one run at them. And I think he's dictated in a way, Pikey, by barriers. If you draw nicely, he can just jump and land where he did there on Saturday.
Speaker 8Yeah, I agree. My whole. I don't know. I'm very much a sore loser, and I come away. We come with a mission to win, and we didn't win and had a mid-race scrimmage and things like that. And that's probably what I wasn't happy about with my ride. I don't. I wasn't happy with my ride. I didn't like my ride for other reasons. People wanted me outside the leader, things like that. Well, I wasn't happy with my ride because I got in a mid-race scrimmage. You know, and there was always probably going to be the harder races for him to win, the 1400s. So we always had somewhere to be, and I feel like I almost jeopardised that by getting in a, as I said, in a mid-race scrimmage and bumping and carting wide on the bend. So that's where I'm critical of my ride. Everyone else is critical for another reason. I don't care about the talk, and I don't care what they say. I have my reasons,
Speaker 16and yeah, that's what I take out of it. I think that being the case, that's why you're one of the elite riders in the country, Pikey. There's no doubt about that. And I can tell you, I've got a lot of friends that live in Western Australia that live off the back of you riding over there. So, you know, they're always happy. And from a punter's aspect, you know, we always back Pikey in the last in Perth to get out. And I'd love to see what the stats are, mate, because I tell you, we win more times than we lose when that's the case. Yeah. Yes, Wayne.
Speaker 17William, just tell the listeners, in a scrimmage and a scrummage and whatever you want to call it, some horses handle it and plenty don't. How much can it knock horses about getting into those battling duels with 1,000 metres to go thinking you've got 1,000 metres to make it up?
Speaker 8Yeah, well, look, I think the wrong horses don't handle it well at all. And it does. It takes the wind out of you. It knocks the wind out of your sail. And, yeah. Yeah, no, certain horses definitely don't. Like some, they'll get into a bump in a scrimmage and they pin their ears back and they love it. But I think, you know, in these races in particular, when everyone's so close to their top, anything like that is very detrimental to your chances.
Speaker 2You've ridden a lot of great horses throughout your career, Pikey. The Katie Queen comes to mind. Now, she tried to win a Cox Plate. She didn't have much luck in that Cox Plate, as Bob pointed out this morning. I know it's hard to compare different horses in different eras, but is he a better horse than her?
Speaker 8I think it's too early to say he's better than her, but I think he shapes better than her. I think he's slightly more versatile. I think he's just in a better place than what she is. We're always trying to manage her, and she's always a very difficult horse to manage, whereas this bloke seems a lot more pliable. A lot more happy to go along with what's needed to happen, whereas she was always the type of horse to take charge, and she had a Norton bit on and things like that. But I wouldn't say – it's too early for me to compare. She's my darling. She's probably the best horse I've ever ridden, so no one's knocking her off easily. And he's done a very good job, but he's not there yet.
Speaker 2A couple of questions, Pikey, about some other stuff there. Have you got any more questions, Wayne or Johnny?
Speaker 16I just wanted to know just the feeling, Pikey, after the race with Leakey. She looked – gee, she looked happy, didn't she? She was out of control. It must be very, very pleasing. It's quite unusual. I mean, she's a great horse person, there's no doubt, and come from a wonderful family, but traditionally the Group 1 winners don't come from people that are training those type of horses. You know, it's generally mare or horse, or Hawks or Hayes or Waller or Price, Moody. So how was her reaction back to you, away from the cameras?
Speaker 8Oh, it was obviously really good. Everyone was just – I think all of us were very happy that we were all given a horse that we know was capable and everyone was able to execute. So definitely a satisfaction of a job well done. Obviously with more still – still more to do, but it was obviously good to tick that box. She was given a nice horse by Bob Peters to train and she was able to get a job done. So I think the satisfaction for everybody was just – that was – yeah, I think that was the key thing I took away from it. Everyone was just so satisfied. They were given an opportunity and they were able to get the job done.
Speaker 16I saw a wonderful photo of you going over to the fence with a few lunatics and about 100 people sent it to me on my text message. That was one of his daughters. Oh, there you go. There you go. Well, there you go. I saw a great photo and 100 people sent me on the text saying, you idiot. You've got no idea what you're talking about. So thanks for doing that. It was a beautiful setup for me.
Speaker 2And your daughter wants to be a jockey. Is that right, Pikey?
Speaker 8Yeah, that's right. She was front and centre on the day and she can't wait to – she's not quite old enough to sign up, but the moment she's old enough she'll be signed up for the apprenticeship program and she's just itching to get going. She's got her pony. She's always going over jumps and she's absolutely horse mad. Anything to do with a horse and her pony, she's all over it.
Speaker 2Well, there you go. There's the next superstar of WA racing. Hey, Pikey, Austin Ghilardi was there for the first time, I think, at Flemington and, gee, Smoochino went enormous, but he got fined for not riding out Smoochino. I think he was fined $1,000. Benny Mellon was fined $2,000. How was the young man after that? I know that he looks up to you and you walked the track with him, I think, there when he arrived at Flemington.
Speaker 8Yeah, look, obviously, I think both riders sort of had their foot in their mouths a little bit. Oh, if that can happen for Mellon. Yeah, look, it was. Very good, Pikey. It's like you were saying that we're thinking it. No worry, mate, you're good. But, look, honestly, I think, yeah, it was an interesting one. It added a bit of flair for the evening. Yeah, it was a little unfortunate that they both got fined. But, yeah, I don't know. It was a tricky one because I think Austin's comments were, well, he stopped riding, so I thought I rode past the line because he rode two strides more than Mellon did. And he goes, well, I thought I rode past the line. Very tricky on the outside fence like that. But, yeah, no, it was an interesting one.
Speaker 2It was a close call, that's for sure. Yeah, he probably. I like, as Mitch Freeman pointed out, if Ben doesn't stop riding Skybird, she finds more. She stops pretty quickly and Smoochino wins if Austin doesn't stop riding him out. I've got no doubt about that. So, there you go, one of those things in racing. And the other one, I know it might be difficult for you to comment on this, Pikey, but Grant and Alana Williams were disqualified for 12 months last week. They've got a stay of proceedings. Hopefully that comes through and their team are confident that they will get the stay. So, but they're your biggest stable, Pikey. You ride for Grant and Alana Williams and Bob Peters as well, but you're the number one rider for the biggest stable in WA. So, how is Grant and Alana going? Obviously, that will have to. Well, if the DQ stays, then that'll have to change the way you go about things, I would imagine.
Speaker 8Yeah, look, it's very unfortunate, especially for me because it's one of the big stables and big supporters, but I haven't actually spoken to them about it. I rang, I let the dust settle a little bit and give them a call a couple of days later just to say hello and see if they're all right. But we stay off the topic and there's already enough talk about it. So, I just. I'm just more interested in if they're doing all right and what they're up to and what their immediate plans might be and how they're going to do things. But, yeah, it's very unfortunate, especially the timing of it. It probably couldn't be worse heading into our carnival. So, I really wish it was one of those things, at least from my point of view, I wish it was sorted sooner or not because it's just. Yeah, it couldn't have been worse timing.
Speaker 2Yeah, because Watch Me Rock and West Empire, they trialled there recently and their first start runs might be this Saturday or around the corner anyway, Pikey. So, yeah, it's.
Speaker 8Yeah, well, they're in trials today, actually. I'm all geared up, ready to head to trials. So, they're trialling again today. So, it'll be about a fortnight's time. But, yeah, just that stop-start effect, it's quite difficult to.
Speaker 16How many horses would they have in work in WA? Oh, I don't know, Pikey.
Speaker 8It'd be around the 50 mark, I'd say, give or take, depending on the time of year.
Speaker 16Yeah. And if they don't. They don't get a stay. Well, this Bob Peters move. leaky over to well no no bob peters and grant
Speaker 2and alana aren't together oh okay sorry
Speaker 16okay so what happens with grant and alana if they don't get a stay well they're working at bunnings yeah well so who takes over well jason
Speaker 2pateman he's training them at the moment western empire so okay they'll have to work it all out but i think that they're they're pretty confident that they'll get a stay okay um and win on appeal as well so um a lot to play out hey good on you pikey congratulations well done see you mate have a great carnival be safe yeah yeah and yeah thanks for having us guys i'm always good to have a chat we'll see you on caulfield cup day hopefully i hope i'll see you yeah good on you good on your pikey thanks guys what a great man
Speaker 16though yeah he's he can write
Speaker 2a winner over there too 100 you know the best part about pikey is that he's come a long way with the work that he does in the media like he's one of the few jockeys now that gets on and has an opinion and says it how he wants to say it like he's there's zach dare i say there's zach purton and there's not too many other jockeys in this country that would um have the opinion like pikey's had in the last month or so i think it's great for the game wayne
Speaker 17yeah and you know what he's older he's more seasoned he's top of his tree and and to be fair i mean we love listening to these sort of guys i mean they're they're smart they're knowledgeable and you know i was lucky enough to know i know william probably better than a lot of people do and uh through where through covert he was uh writing for us uh and was stuck in uh victoria during cover so we had plenty of nights together and um he doesn't say much he's very very quiet he's got one vice it's cadbury's chocolate he loves the he likes
Speaker 2to drink from time to time
Speaker 17now um he he would have a bourbon but he's not he's not a mad drinker but he would um when uh ollie kirk won the call for guinness i i literally forced him to drink he wasn't uh he wasn't mad into it tell you what he can write can i tell you though he's a ripper calling bs backpike is a ripper he's a ripper calling bs backpike is a ripper in the last i mean i know i know it happens the best ever but i mean it might be his worst ride for the day the last time i just tell you we used to do this over the journey
Speaker 16right we'd as young fellas we used to back m pelling mick pelling in the last in brisbane the pontiff the pontiff yeah yeah well
Speaker 17he was a good writer in perth perth he was a good man i remember as a kid people say back john hawks and adelaide in the last it'll just win it's quite amazing in the way he's looking for the w pike in
Speaker 16the last i've got a very good buddy of mine who's in a long time he's got a very good buddy of mine who's in a long time he's got a very good buddy of mine who's in a long time he's got a very good buddy of mine who's in a long lot of horses with us and he swears by it so we all tune in now it doesn't matter what price
Speaker 17so so before we finish the turnbull i reckon that uh sir dillis will be uh he's the one to beat the cox plate did all the bullying work to uh chase that leader down and what were they doing there they were just going lickety split like again again we sit back
Speaker 16and have a look at the weight for age horses in that race and they ran pretty much one two three four so you know really i mean half yours i thought it was okay you know i mean look it's a good horse it ran okay it ran okay but my concern for it would clearly be as i said it was a length behind cosmic crusader at the 800 and got beat seven yeah but
Speaker 17it's not it's not a way for age horse but then you're going back to handicaps we're going to carry massive weights now we we spoke off air a bit just before about the caulfield cup and yes they've got plenty of weight the alienas and the half yours but i mean it's it's light this year it's one race that's genuinely light this year you're gonna stop mentioning aliena for the caulfield cups i know it's not running in the caulfield cup but i'm
Speaker 16talking about horses that get buffeted or what did you call it before when they get when they get whacked whatever that word was i've done it before no no no no no when they get in in in with with interference and stuff bullocking no i can't remember anyway whatever the word was uh buckaroo got smashed got smashed at the start jamie obviously got time for it um so 28 links yeah but it was enough yeah it was enough all right then him right hey just on that light infantry man is he underrated look i think he's a nice horse we brought him out here with a great jamie sort of running that uh he wouldn't suit in the way that you're gonna ride he would have too he would have yeah um jamie spencer he's still he's a great man jamie spencer i saw that on youtube
Speaker 17that he wrote it wouldn't the other day one
Speaker 16of the best blokes ever oh he's a written
Speaker 17bloke yeah
Speaker 16um anyway so well he's won two australian cups he's now run second behind behind that horse he loves flemington he loves on pace so like i would imagine kiram will send him to the cox plate can he win you probably can't beat cosmic crusader but what i will say is if pride of jenny goes there she won't go there why won't you go there well i think
Speaker 2she's going to go and be set
Speaker 16for the empire rose i'd be going to cox plate with her i'll ring tony i mean you sit back and have a look at the cox plate now and as i say those two elite horses we're not convinced she's a gets 2000 yet but we'll find out on saturday and it probably will and autumn glow we discussed this probably end of prep run 2000 so probably will but they're not going to be there and i'm telling you the next six or seven horses there's not much between them but we're not going to be there we say that and i know
Speaker 17they're saying they're going to sydney for the for the golden uh golden eagle but you know what maybe if she bolted in by five or six or eight on saturday she's an alibi they might change their mind and say hey leave her here i'm just making it up but you know what
Speaker 16if i i mean i'll be surprised if jenny doesn't go there all right just just be
Speaker 17very just on the end of that just be very very careful with saturday's form in melbourne and sydney because some of it's going to some of it's going to change there's no doubt some of it's going to change and you know because of because of the wetness i don't know if it's going to change i don't know if it's going to of the track and sydney was uh sydney even though it was only a five slash six it still wasn't uh it wasn't great on
Speaker 16saturday so aliana ran huge uh again i would imagine chris will well he's probably already said it he'll probably use the the very elegant campaign so it'll go to the cox plate and be really it'll be really competitive like you know if it gets the right run it can win as i said not much between five or six of them but melbourne cup it'll be it's right in the zone for it reminds me definitely very elegant the
Speaker 17whole campaign bard cummings was training it that there'd be neon lights flashing and dadaladaladas well i don't know if she'll
Speaker 2go to the melbourne cup with 58 well again we go back and have a look at the quality of horses they're going to be
Speaker 17they're not strong races she'll go to the corfield cup's the easier one of the two but they're not they're not strong races you're going to run around against those same horses again in two weeks time in a in a cox plate so they're they're as good as what's around here right now and what we don't know about is is all these imports coming in for the melbourne cup because as much as we know about them every year the worst outsider ends up running the best and the best horse that comes out he quite often doesn't perform at his best i can remember speaking
Speaker 16to dan o'sullivan about very elegant because she had a heap of weight in the melbourne cup and he said i think when she gets to 3200 she is going to be absolutely elite this horse everything indicates that you have to run it so i know that he has this i'm not saying he has exactly the same but he has a similar opinion around eliana i think he thinks that similar similar to very elegant she might not run the trip either oh he thinks she will no no but she
Speaker 17might not run the trip you don't know until you try that's true very elegant is probably one of the greatest melbourne cup wins i reckon i've ever seen
Speaker 16what what happened to her after that after she won the melbourne cup she came back and won the 1400 group one first up the winx yeah but then she was seven i think she was older she was getting older and she was competitive you know she did she win the caulfield cup the year after she won the melbourne cup or the year before before i can't remember the year and i think she definitely won the
Speaker 2winx after i think yeah i think chris waller's concerned that the 58 if she does go around in a melbourne cup it's not regarding the weight and whether she could beat the opposition it's it's what kind of horse you'll have going forward with her next preparations she doesn't have
Speaker 17to run much in the autumn though well when
Speaker 16you go through the melbourne cup field again and i know it's early doors but you know that horse defiantly that horse defiantly forms so it's in it half yours couldn't possibly win with the weight eliana could win with the weight james j braddock i think um obviously he ran really well overseas he'll be competitive and then you're sort of you're looking at some other international horses zaran and have to bounce back in the caulfield cup to even run i would imagine yeah what do you make of
Speaker 2zaran like well again
Speaker 16look i mean i had a really good chat with kieran yesterday and i spoke to ethan um yeah last night after the races or text him um he's surprised he's still favored
Speaker 2for the caulfield
Speaker 16cup well no i'm not because the race shape on saturday the four weight for age horses ran one two three four the handicappers were back there were two and three waves back and horses like zaran and um and even even st george i mean they were so far from the horses that i'm not saying they didn't they didn't get right up and they but i mean i'm sure horses were sort of taken care of because the way the track was playing so um now look i i'm not concerned with that if if kieran was the horse wouldn't be running he said he pulled up great he was fine and just don't be too stressed about um just relax the whole shape of the race and ethan said the same so so let's see half yours can he win a caulfield cup with 57 and a half on
Speaker 2his back way no
Speaker 17no all right then no who do you want to
Speaker 2be backing in the caulfield cup then anything out of the turnbull
Speaker 17aliana but she's not running
Speaker 2yeah i hope he wins was okay um yeah it
Speaker 17was okay uncle
Speaker 2tony's just text through
Speaker 17has he um he goes i don't know i don't know i don't know who's your favorite uncle tony or bob petersen oh bob's back he loves him bob's back he loves this is what you know what we have to do yeah that would
Speaker 16be something why don't you have a breakfast have them both have an on-air breakfast and get uncle bob in tony and uncle tony wouldn't get it bob wouldn't get a word in yeah but just get the three of you could come in and just have a little bit of muesli or something he's
Speaker 2not he's not keen um but they're still in discussions right okay the empire rose is the target two thousand back to sixteen hundred was a fail last sort of, so they, they want to win the empire, is there a better chance of winning the empire rose the cox plate they could win it but whether they could hold off those horses that will be following her the biggest
Speaker 17thing is you got to make the right decisions at the right time and if you're not greedy and you actually pick your right mark you're going to be a hell of a chance in some of these races because as it keeps saying you take one or two out and it gets uh it drops off real quick
Speaker 16from an owner's perspective and also a public perspective now you're going to be able to follow five or six or seven or eight different horses in these races which is great you know it gives us an opportunity as i said we take on the other two who are elite you're running for second or third and even in the sprint race and from the everest you're running you know where you know jimmy star is probably running for third i wouldn't imagine we could be tempted have you got a slot in the
Speaker 2everest we'll get to that in just a moment louis says you got to get to a break we'll get to a break right now this is the monday means test
Speaker 1join the conversation text us on 0 4 9 736 736 live across australia this is giddy up with gareth hall welcome
Speaker 2back this is the means test gareth hall with you wayne hawks and also johnny o'neill um gareth you forgot wayne doesn't like wa i thought they could win a cox plate on protest until fred kersley started to talk i don't know about that if that was that was one of the most entertaining
Speaker 17cox plate yeah one
Speaker 2of
Speaker 17the most entertaining protest hearings of all time that's a bit unfair not the why would i not like western australia i'll drink your white chardonnay every day of the week from the margaret river you
Speaker 16did some of your best work there when you're 18 22 going from adelaide up there i have not been not been to
Speaker 17western australia enough but i do love western australia and i'm i'm heading over the next year i'm doing a little trip over to perth okay there you go
Speaker 2with the quokka with briata oh i don't know about that yeah i'm surely we aren't past the days of looking at the pedigree as a guide and forming an opinion cosmic crusader was no issue with 2000 all wet being by maurice out of a street cry man that's from brett cosmic crusader has had um i don't know cosmic crusader is a star i reckon he'd be mighty hard to beat um and he's a good horse going places and that's from tom and can i just quickly say on that the pressure andrea leak
Speaker 17would have put herself under issues because you're getting a really good horse you've never trained a you've got one of the highest profile owners in the country in bob peters man you got the blowtorch on you yourself let alone anyone else putting it on you and i'm sure i'm sure other people weren't putting the blowtorch on her but you know what it's good to get the monkey off the back plenty
Speaker 2of disgust now let's have a look at the next episode's victory in the cool more i'm not the cool more the dane hill um was very impressive in the dane hill and he's a horse that um is going to be hard to beat in the cool more there was concerns over how well he was going after a good jump out there at cranburn and he just did what he needed to do at flemington and he wasn't favorite there on saturday natural fling the philly was the favorite but it was the next episode who made the statement there at flemington a few days
Speaker 5back next episode's wider and trying to wind up natural fling got to the front from pocket fuller cash m bube is getting through then came over excited natural fling 100 to go from m bube and then the next episode natural fling 50 meters to go the next episode the next episode a big win so the next episode
Speaker 2wins and wins well is he the horse to beat in the cool more wayne
Speaker 17i'm just having a look at his wet track form his wet track form is amazing isn't it yeah he's running the golden gift on a good forward run nowhere he's he's won on a soft seven he's run second on a soft seven he won on a heavy eight he won the gold coast on a soft track and he's run first up on a uh what was the track road on saturday and when he raised they said it's a nine but i think we'll all concede that it probably wasn't a nine at that stage so same what i said earlier not taking anything away from that horse but he loves a wet track because if he didn't love a wet track he wouldn't have hit the line and i mean the way he hit the line was amazing but you look at him you look at cosmic crusader how they just went through that ground so so well and natural blitz can't do much more than what it's done i mean natural fling natural fling so yeah sorry good horse natural blitz yeah it was a good horse is it the harrison's horse yeah it was correct um she can't do much more than what she's done but she is just a pure pure sprinter so i suppose they'll go on to the uh go on to the cool more but 1200 up the straight will that be too far for her in a really really strong race because remember she's been up and she's had a few runs already some of these horses are you know the next episode's going to be so amazingly right for the cool more regardless of the track where some of these other horses have had three four runs already got to put that into uh in a play as
Speaker 16well it'll win the next episode it'll win yeah it'll win it continues to improve um take my hat off oh look i know they paid plenty of money for it but 2.8 wouldn't it yeah but will will born was all over this horse um i'll put my hand up and say that they actually put me in it at the start and and then i saw how much it was and i said no i'm not going in that so no so so i might have made a blue there well matter of fact i've definitely made a blue there but um so well done to kieran and will these expensive colts as you know hawks you've had plenty of them over the journey they're hard to get when you get them it's good but they're bloody hard to get and then and then the challenge is when you do get them and they look like hercules nine times out of ten you got to cut them or you got to do whatever you want to do because they just don't do what they need to do so i take my hat off to kieran and will to get the horse right it did trial disappointing we saw that early doors but they've turned it around were they disappointed with it though well i think so yeah i mean i don't know when i spoke to kieran early doors he said yeah look i'm just not quite sure the horse is come up but then they sort of moved him from sydney to melbourne and so anyway good good on them for that i don't think natural flint can win over the six i agree and then i thought lloyd kennywell's horse ran pretty well and bube yeah i thought it ran well so well done lordy that's a bloody good result and blue door will be hard to beat it's a fast horse it'll be up there but there's going to be so much pace on that this horse will just sit back and go bang i would have
Speaker 2thought 2.7 million he cost um kieran said he's gone from a 10 million dollar to a million dollar in those first trials there in sydney and then all he wins he's worth every bit of 30 he's worth 10 again um he's a good colt he's a proper colt and if he can win the cool more i think kieran's got a share in him because you didn't take that share that'd
Speaker 17probably be right yeah so so now now correct me if i'm wrong but but isn't there didn't he take 20 i don't know because i think there was 20 so so the word is now you you'll find out johnny but there was 20 left in the horse well
Speaker 16he loved the horse that much and the interesting thing is when when he loves him i mean that's a to be doing that because there's not that many people that are that are sort of willing to pay that type of money for yearlings really yeah and i know some of the stutter in it i know kate and andy are in it who race a few horses or not a few a lot of horses with aussie and myself and and with myself as well so good on them and it's 270 grand for 10 percent yep like you're talking more because you got gst no no no of course that's part of 300 but that's my point so that's
Speaker 2not an everyone horse and and wayne training these big colts i know very difficult to
Speaker 17perform he couldn't
Speaker 2hold his breath basically after that victory when he was on channel seven the adrenaline and the relief neither because obviously it's a massive
Speaker 17punt that's paid off i'll tell you i'll tell you what what about when they're having their first start and they're going to bendigo right and they've cost a million and a half and you know you know it's no good it's just shocking because you know you're going to go the more you do it don't you just retire them what unraced yeah who wants them oh well i mean kirimar what was that is the one the caulfield guineas they couldn't they couldn't give it away a couple of years ago graph graph couldn't give it away tried to sell it couldn't sell it for a couple of times there's only a couple of studs they're going to pay big money and if you don't have the new gates and the cool moors and the whittons at the right time with the right horse and the right everything you don't get the money yeah the money's not there like it used to be it's as it's as simple as that and we all get caught up in this stallion hype and everything like that but you gotta have the right horse yeah that's actually done the right job by well you you look at guest house i mean he was by um cool moors horse wasn't he home affairs and they love buying sons of and stuff like that then he and he won the slipper yeah so you you got to get a lot going right for you to actually nail it with these stallions and as i said i know better than anyone yeah that it's so so hard to do so well done for getting the job
Speaker 16as an owner and a punter geez i love seeing zara when he's when he's wound up that last sort of 80 or 100 yards like he's right on over the bridge was extraordinary the other day that really aggressive push and then on the weekend just to watch him sit down i mean that's why he's you know pikey probably can do it ethan brown can do it willow does it but i tell you what when he's when he's in rhythm marks are and he puts his head down and really rides those horses out geez it gives you a level of confidence in a photo you just sort of know that he's going to get there you know it's a huge
Speaker 17win the i looked at two races over and over again on the jockeys one was mark zara on uh on saturday how he rode that horse up the straight he didn't he didn't really half get going until after the 300 probably at the 250. so you got to know what's underneath you to be able to do that but that ride was ice cold and the other one obviously was the wizard because he was swinging in the in the turnbull and it's it's obviously hard it's obviously hard to do the old i just count the three before i go do you know what i mean because plenty of people back when i was a kid the best jockeys used to be in trouble because they would sit too long because they were not too confident but they were just played it cool whereas today most people are trying to beat the horse to the winning post so just to watch those two ride the way they did was uh extraordinary and i will
Speaker 16say just on that too two extraordinary rides on the weekend from Craig Williams. Almost exactly the same. The rides on those New Zealand horses. Yeah. Hanky Elfer. Yeah. That came over and his ride on Miss Watiti. Yeah. They were just extraordinary rides. He was swinging on them, no panic. And then when he pushed the button, Jizzy opens up as well. So it's great this time of the year to see, you know, the best jockeys riding these horses and races so well.
Speaker 2We're going to take a break on the other side of it. We'll talk about the Everest. There's a few horses that are yet to confirm, or there's a few slot holders that are yet to confirm their horses for the Everest. So we'll discuss that next here on Giddy Up. This is the Monday Means Test. All thanks to. Bet365. Great to have your company as always. Let's have a chat about the Everest. There was some performance there by Tempted. In fact, this is what Tempted did there on Saturday afternoon there at Rural Randwick. She was devastating to remain unbeaten this preparation.
Speaker 13Weeping woman's been trailing, giving chase. Two further back to Cabalas Mahuna. Played her fronting on. Now Tempted gets to the outside. She's six lengths away and she is cutting loose. Here she comes. Savvy Halley hits the lead. Not for long. Tempted gave a windburn. Look at her go. She's going to absolutely torch them in the lead up to the Everest.
Speaker 17So can she beat Cahing Rising Way? I'll tell you what I'm going to say. What? I'm not allowed to say his name, but I'm going to do this for you.
Speaker 13It's English and Felsweep fighting it out. Chautauqua very late. It's English a half length in front. Can he do it? Chautauqua. He's flying. Yes. There's history. Not for long. Look at her go. She's going to.
Speaker 17She's the next Chautauqua. To sit back and do what she did and to go past those horses, she flogged them. You know what? They're not superior horses. Let's be honest and blunt about it. She is a superior, superior horse. She nearly won a Blue Diamond. She nearly won a Golden Slipper. She was dominant at three. They've looked after her. Like, you know what? You really got to give credit where it's due because most people go one too many. Most owners want to go. One extra. And you know what? They backed off and they've done all the right things with her. She is a star. And to watch that horse win on Saturday, it absolutely just reminded me of Chautauqua because that's what he used to do week in, week out. And that's what she's actually starting to do. And as good as what we think she is, you know what? We need to be wrapping her up even more because we spend plenty of time on Cosmic Crusaders and horses like this. This horse is an absolute star. And she is obviously the only one that can take on the superstar from Hong Kong. And where's. Where's she going to be in the run compared to him? You know what I mean? I mean, you probably want him to draw 12 and she'd be a little bit closer, but she's so dominant when she sits back off them. And geez, I'd love these two to be going head to head with 200 meters to go. It's a flick. Might be the second best horse in the world. Who tipped it?
Speaker 16She's amazing. She's amazing. Might be. I mean, you just don't run sectionals like that. And to be honest, it was just so arrogant on Saturday. Got back, tried to find a spot, couldn't do it. Just kept going back. Just kept dragging it back. I'm sitting looking. Wow. Like, you know, you, you must be so confident to be doing that. Yeah. And, uh, so it might be the second best horse in the world. I don't think, um. Sprinter. Well, no, I, I'm saying, I think it's elite. Yeah. This horse, right? I think it's going to be, and I think you're right, Hawksy. She's elite. She is elite. I think the challenge. She's done it since her two-year-old career, Johnny. Yeah, but I think the challenge we've got is the Hong Kong horse is just. He's going to be giving you a start. He's just something that I don't think any of us have ever seen. I think, you know, I mean.
Speaker 2Kira Ma mentioned that. When he, he said that he saw her, we were at the, he's launched on Friday. He said that, um, he's never seen anything like it himself. He was at the quarantine center at Canterbury and he watched that. He said, he said to us on
Speaker 18Friday, it was like, geez, I was hoping its coat wouldn't be any good, but it's good. I thought its feet would be no good. They're pretty good. It's all we thought. I'll just have a look at that mince here. Let me have a look at that sort of mince here and just see how he's going. No, it's pretty good. But you know what?
Speaker 17If she runs second to K and rising and gets me lengthened, a half, she's a star, an absolute star. Well, I'll tell you what, what price is he on bet three, six, five?
Speaker 2He's a dollar 36. Okay. She's $6 and then Jimmy's star's 15, Jolly's star 15.
Speaker 17If, if he's not there, she's a dollar 30 favorite for the average right now. Yeah. Agree. Or a dollar 50 anyway. She's, no, no, no. She'd be shorter. She'd be shorter.
Speaker 16She's a dollar 36 now. No, no. If he wasn't there. If he wasn't there.
Speaker 17If he wasn't there. She'd be a dollar 50 or shorter. She would. No, she would be. Oh, well, why? Well, you said, you showed the rest of the horses. We don't have any horses here that can beat her.
Speaker 2So Jimmy's star there, like you haven't, you haven't locked in a slot with him just yet. Um, he would get a slot if he wants one. Um, so what's happening?
Speaker 16Well, Ozzy's doing a lot of work with Kieran at the moment. Um, and look, the great thing is that Oz shares these discussions with all of the ownership group. We all get an opportunity to have a say. After he decides. Um, but ultimately. Kieran and Ozzy will make the call, you know, as I said, we all get some input, but, and I think our gut feel is, well, my gut feel is he couldn't beat, he can't beat the winner. He can't be tempted. The horse is absolutely flying. So can he run third? He probably can. Yeah, for sure. What's the, how much is third? I think it's 2 million, but then there's the, the slot deals. I'm not quite sure what the percentage would be.
Speaker 17Um, see if it's 50, 50. That, that, that's a million. That's a million bucks for 50%. To run third, yeah.
Speaker 16So look, and then the other option, Hawksy, as we've spoken a lot about is, does he go to the Sydney Stakes, which is a group two on the same day, six furlongs, all the better ones or the elite ones would be in the Everest. You would have thought, I think it's 1.2 to the winner. I know it's only a group, not only a group two. No, but he's a gelding, so he's racing for prize money. Um, or, or do you wait, jump him out down the straight, run him the last day and then go to the oar, see how he handles the straight.
Speaker 17Because he's never been up the straight.
Speaker 16No, he's never been up the straight.
Speaker 17So he's never, he's never been up the straight. Yeah. And you know what? There's been many a better horse than Jimmy that hasn't gone up the straight. Now his, his racing pattern should say to you, it's going to be fantastic sitting back in behind them and just doing what Mark Zara did on Saturday with the three year old, doing that exact same thing. It just should suit perfectly. But I can promise you one thing. It's the hardest place to win in Australia is up the straight and I've saddled many, many super horses. Golden slipper winners to whatever that just don't handle the straight. It's a real horses for courses. So, you know, to go there and trial up the straight would be a plus. And then to run him up the straight, that's, that's what I would do if it was my call.
Speaker 16And like all the owners, we love him, right? He's a beautiful horse. He's brought so much joy to everybody. So at the end of the day, it's a really difficult decision. We're very lucky to be in the position and I'm sure. What will you do, Johnny? I'm not quite sure what they're going to do, mate. To be honest, I mean, the natural scenario is. For Karen to want to go to the Everest, but you know, the point clearly is. Off, off tempted to run the other day. He, I don't think he could be, um, and he's, I certainly don't think he can be carrying rising. Um, so do you go up there and run third or, or do you look, I don't know. It's a hard call and that's thank God. Ozzie and Karen are going to make it. What would you do?
Speaker 17Wait, no, I think I, I think I'd wait for the last day and, uh, I'd wait for the last day and, uh, and run him up the straight to see how he, uh, see how he goes up the straight, because let me tell you something, we can talk about some of these other races and they're great with the prize money. Cause you look at the prize money afterwards, go, wow. Look at, look at the winner's check, but winning a group one at Flemington over cup week. There's nothing better, nothing better than actually doing it.
Speaker 16So tempted got beaten a length and a half or two lengths last year behind. Yeah. I reckon she's improved every bit of that. So say, and I think he's improved five and Jimmy's going as good as he was. So like they ran. One, two, three last year in that order. Maybe, maybe they'll do that again.
Speaker 2So at the moment we've got blue door who represent new guy, Chris Waller, big jolly star Mulberry will have, um, savvy Hallie. Yep. Cool. More. I don't know what they're going to do now with guest house going to the paddock. Um, Ninja will represent fairway, which is John Camilleri. We've got James. Haren hasn't picked one yet. Head ball represents the slot that you had last year with max Whitby.
Speaker 17Cole hadn't scratched on SEPTA. Something wrong with it. I don't think that is, I don't know why. The tab will
Speaker 2have, um, probably Jimmy star and I know that's, I think he'd be the horse that they want. Can't get a lot of money.
Speaker 16The tab too. So if they gave it with that, you're going to give us all the prize money for third. Oh, I'll tell you.
Speaker 17I'll tell you what you're eating. Gil would do that. Oh, I'll tell you what you'd be, you'd be, you'd be a better chance with some generous man. Yeah. You're a better chance for some, some of the TAB.
Speaker 2Cadolphin will have tempted and Yulong will have angel capital. So there you go. That's the field. Um, and there's a few horses that could get in. Into an Everest, but aren't going there because they don't want to take on carrying rising and tempted until a 10 43. We'll take a break. We'll come back with more of the means test next. Plenty to discuss. I 4 double nine 7. 36736, great to meet you. story all around in the Epsom. It was a great race. It was a bit of an upset as Sienna Griemer wrote in her first group. Griemer or Griemer? Griemer. Griemer. Yeah, she won in her she wrote in her first group one and she won it. This is what happened in the Epsom.
Speaker 13Now Autumn Boy back in the field is starting to come off the fence looking to improve. Then Mr. Miller followed by Matt Chalade well ridden, working into the clear. The New Zealand Mayor's running on. Further back to Tom Kitton and Autumn Boy right up the inside. Fully lit just the leader. Mr. Miller's got the run and here's God's Window. My goodness, God's Window sprinted out for Sienna Griemer. God's Window won the Epsom beating Chael Wolfe. Third position So well under Sienna.
Speaker 2It was a terrific ride and God's Window wins another Epsom there for Chris Waller who now equals Tommy Smith and Gay Waterhouse as the most successful trainer in Epsom handicap history. How many do you know? I think it's now eight. Geez, it was a win.
Speaker 16It was a win. We used your man, Tyler Schiller on Mr. Miller. Give it a beautiful ride. Fourth the fence. Got out with about 200 to go. Popped his head in front. I said, here we go, Hawks. He'll be ringing you straight after the race for using your man and then down the outside comes Sienna. But well done to her. It was a great race. I will say that the Werewolf with the weight that he carried was unbelievable.
Speaker 2Chael Wolfe, he was unlucky too.
Speaker 16Werewolf, mate. What a run. Just whooshed down the middle. Can he beat Autumn Glow with the blinkers on? No. But he can come to the Cox Plate and be competitive. I don't think he can do both, can you? Well, I wouldn't do that. I would come to the Cox Plate. As I said, I think that there's why would you run against her and Sheezer in those elite races? Because you're not going to beat them. But Chael Wolfe could win the Cox Plate. I have no doubt about that. The way that he is going, Joe Pride and Brave. The great man, the great young man's obviously done a terrific job with that horse. He listens to the show. Well, I've got to tell you, if they bring that horse down here, it'll run top five. And you know what? There's five or six horses any of them can win. Especially if Pride of Jenny
Speaker 2is in the Cox Plate.
Speaker 16Pride of Jenny, It, Birdman, Aliana, Cosmic Crusader, Sir Delius. So there's five or six that can win the race.
Speaker 2Would you back Chael Wolfe in the Cox Plate if he came? Would I back him?
Speaker 17Yeah. Yeah, I would. We all saw his run with 59 kilos getting held up, held up. But I mean, he probably had a bit on him. Yeah. So the question is exactly that. Do you take on Autumn Glow in his race? Let's be honest, because he won it two years in a row, hasn't he? Yeah. So he fires in the spring. There's noted about that. So that's obviously in the back of your mind. But then you say, well, Cox Plate, there's only one Cox Plate, isn't there? It's not a King Charles. This is the year. This is the year.
Speaker 16Because next year, both of those horses, if they step them up as they mature a bit, they're going to dominate. So this is the year. They'll probably run in the Cox Plate. This is the year. They'll probably run the
Speaker 17Cox Plate. So yet again, it's another stable that has to decide and big decisions to make. Where do we go and what do we do? But he was amazing. The winner, did you actually honestly see the winner's run, his first up run? Very good. It ran enormous. It ran enormous. It's got to be two links, ran through the line, ran super. Sienna's riding, it's 20 to 1. If J-Mac's on it, it's about $8 I reckon. Yeah. So hats off to her, you know, because she rode through winter. She did a magic job. Everyone said she'd be back at Kempler Grange on the Saturdays. And here she is riding Wallace B-Graders that aren't B-Graders because he, that was a serious win on Saturday. Like a serious win. I know Cheer Wolf should have probably won, but that happens in all those big races. There's always two or three unlucky.
Speaker 16So what about Cox Plate though, if it does come down? Because I heard tags ranting and raving about what a great run it was. Do you reckon we could get a little werewolf sort of suit for tags? Tags to wear? He won't come. What do you mean he won't go? What about if he had the werewolf out for him?
Speaker 2No, but no, he won't come, Chair Wolf, for the Cox Plate, hey? Why won't he come? Because he's going to the King Charles. Now Wayne, what about, Frank wants to know, well written, pulled up with the thumbs. What's that mean?
Speaker 17Just an irregular heartbeat. So you've, you've, you're a bit stressed. I suppose in human terms, just to say you're, you're stressed. It's amazing how they don't do the winners. And I've said this to stewards in many jurisdictions for many, many years. You need to start doing, looking at the winners because the winners are in the swab and box and they've done their job. But maybe some of those horses might have some of those issues as well just for, just, just for winning. So
Speaker 16you've got a couple of knocks about 250, 300 out trying to get through that gap. It's actually got an interesting action, that horse. It needs, needs plenty of ground to let, let down. And if you have a look at the way that it was winning in New Zealand, that was very evident. So it was sort of a bit wayward, got a couple of whacks. I was actually disappointed. I went back and watched the run. It ran pretty well. And if you consider three-year-old fillies stepping up to open class, it's always difficult to do. And there's not, there's not hundreds of them that do it, Hawks. He really is there. And I mean, she was a dominant three-year-old, you know, obviously in New Zealand, she's come over, she ran really well. So I mean, she'll be fine if they place her in the right race. She'll win another nice race.
Speaker 17Great, great three-year-olds like Eliana haven't dominated at four and five years of age. That's, that's, my point is, that's how strong it is because you're taking on the older, experienced horses and they're super, super hard to beat. So most, most three-year-olds do not go on at four. It's as simple as that. And the Kiwi form, well, you'd never know how that's, how that stands, do you?
Speaker 16But, you know, great horse,
Speaker 2but got a couple of whacks, so we forgive it. We'll take a break. We'll come back with our own knows and yes, yes, yes, plus your text messages on the Garrett's Horse and Hound text line.
Speaker 13Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes, yes, yes! Yes, yes, yes!
Speaker 17Take it away, Wayne. Um, well, my yes, yes was tempted, saying that she's the next Jataqua. I know people say, Johnny, that she hasn't won much at Group 1, level and things like that, but, uh, she's been very unlucky in, uh, in some of those better races and she's a, uh, she's a star.
Speaker 16Johnny? Just love this time of the year. Um, Sienna Greenmer, obviously. Um, I thought Liam's work around the Flemington track was unbelievable. Yeah. To consider we could even get there. Uh, and to watch Ethan Brown, Craig Williams, Mark Zara and Jabba, even Jabba, Jabba Wocky. Jabba. He gets a ride in the cup now on, on, on, uh, Mr. Monaco, which is terrific. So, and then again, Kieran, like he's trained, tempted the next episode, um, the horse that won the Metropolitan, he's won the. What's his name? Juzia Cabot. Juzia Cabot. And what about Saintly Dancer? I mean, found the right part, but really opened up. So now it goes into a, I'm pretty sure a thousand guineas, uh, with a great opportunity. So, you know, to be training as many quality stayers, winners, sprinters, combinations of horses like that. He's on fire. Take the hat off to him. He's on fire, mate. He's on fire.
Speaker 17Wayne. Dylan Gibbons won the flight stakes in Sydney on Saturday and you wouldn't know Dylan Gibbons, but he is an absolute rockstar, this kid. He is a genuinely good kid. He really, really is. He's only young. He's got his head screwed on. He's, his dad was a good bush jockey and he won't mind me saying that. And you know what? I just thought it was great that he could, uh, win it, win a group one at Royal Randwick on Saturday in the flight
Speaker 16stakes. Hey Hawksy, you talk about a young professional man like him, he rode a horse for us, um, in the lead up, uh, we were hoping to get to a wake full, but we had a hiccup on the weekend a couple of weeks ago and he rang me straight after the race and, um, which I thought was incredible and just said, look, Johnny, I just want to let you know, we got back, was slowly run. The horse ran really good. It ran on Saturday. He didn't ride it. He chose to ride something else and it ran disappointing. You know, he he's, he's won a group one. He rang me after the races to check in on the horse and just said, look, I saw it ran disappointing. I hope everything's okay. How was your day outside of that? I said, don't worry about how my day was. Congratulations to you. Like incredible. So look, he's a terrific young guy and I've got no doubt the point that you're making. Um, he's going to make it that kid, well, he can ride, oh yeah, for sure. Yeah. He can, I mean, he's a great rider. We use him. Kieran uses him a lot on some of the lighter weight horses and he hasn't had any opportunities and he's just starting to get going and a terrific young man. So, so look out for him, everyone. He's a, he's going to, well, he's already emerging, but he'll continue to do that.
Speaker 17And to be fair, we need them too, because look at the age of some of our, uh, our elite, they're not, they're not getting any younger, are they? So we need these, you know, there's only Zach, not only, but Zach Lloyd's in Sydney. So we need the next brigade to be, uh, to be
Speaker 2coming through. Um, my yes, yes, yes, was the Flemington track. What a track it is. Like we all thought it might get caught off Saturday morning. I was talking to Liam McKee, he goes, it needs to stop raining, but even drizzled throughout the meeting, we got an upgrade and as Pikey said, it raced better than a heavy track.
Speaker 16At what stage are we game enough? To make him the boss of all the tracks. Well, we'll talk about that. We've been talking about this. We'll talk about that in just a moment. No disrespect to anyone else.
Speaker 2We'll talk about that. And after the next break, it's 11:58. This is Giddy Up in the Monday Meanstays. 10:58. Welcome back to Giddy Up, this is the Monday means test as we get into our final an hour. Big hello to our friends listening on their local Essie and Turf dial right throughout WA. You missed Johnny O'Neill apologising about Cosmic Crusader. William Pike joined us. He was interesting. We had Bob Peters a little early on as well. Buying a baseball cap. Yeah, so it's a big
Speaker 17weekend for WA racing.
Speaker 2Hey, so we're just having a chat
Speaker 17so. We need to have some wind because Frio didn't. Yeah, that's a nice way.
Speaker 16You can start wearing, we can start wearing
Speaker 2masks. Now the VRC, we're talking about the track. So when they did the renovations all those years ago, they got it right. Liam O'Keefe's a gun, but what a track to do that. And like the MRC, they're going to have their renovations after the Caulfield Cup and their track is tied. All they need to do is do what the VRC did with their track,
Speaker 16basically. Look, I'm sure that all of the track managers and all of the staff and all of the processors, I'm sure they all speak. I would imagine, Hawksie. I would imagine they're all close mates. They all get on like the jockeys do trainers do and people in the media do. I hope they do anyway. And if they don't, the call has got to be made on behalf of Racing Victoria to make this bloke the boss. He's a jet. That's no disrespect to anybody else. He's got to be involved in the whole process, the laying of the grass, the makeup of the grass, the whole scenario because he just continues to deliver. He's open and I'm not having a crack at the other jurisdiction. Areas or the curators. I'm just saying that sometimes when you find somebody who's so elite at doing this, it's just common sense. And the other guys in some instances may be able to learn off him. He may be able to learn off them. But I think from a racing perspective, we need to do it. Hawksie, we talk about it all the time. There's challenges in New South Wales as well with tracks. There's challenges everywhere. So at some stage, from a Victorian perspective, I personally think we need to do it. Now, I don't know whether he wants to do it. He might not want to. But I think that there's a gig that needs to be made for him to get across and control that.
Speaker 2It's a weird world we live in because so the VRC have got their own consultancy business that Liam O'Keefe looks after and he gives advice to everyone else around the world apart from anyone in Australia or Melbourne. It's crazy. He'll go to Dubai. He'll go to the UK. He goes to New Zealand and he gives advice on what they should be doing with their
Speaker 17tracks. That came in because. Liam was doing it for nothing. And Kylie Rogers came in and Kylie, when she was at the AFL, and I'm sure I'm right here, that Kylie was in charge of, what's the join up the road here with the roof? What do they call it now? Marvel Stadium. That she was actually in charge
Speaker 16of that. Join up the road with the roof. Is that where Don Dollar is? You would have been there with Don Dollar.
Speaker 17I think that's not what I mean. Excuse me. Excuse me. So what they used to do there, the AFL was, was that they actually they actually sent them. I was going to say prostituted. That's the wrong word. What's the word I'm thinking? But they their staff went and did the same thing.
Speaker 16Consultancy business. How is my prostitute and consultant the same? I don't know. That is an interesting call. I don't know. Are you saying, what are you referring to
Speaker 17there? I'm referring to consultancy. Is that a word? Consultancying. So anyway.
Speaker 16Never call us again, please.
Speaker 17Never in your life.
Speaker 16Hawkshire, I wonder what the difference in the price is between prostitutes. Liam's expensive. I don't know. I don't know.
Speaker 11I don't know. Keep going, son.
Speaker 17Keep going. I don't know what Liam charges. Boom, boom. So what were you saying? So Liam, what the VRC do is they charge out Liam so much to go and consult. Yes. So that's what they do. So to answer your question, here's this. Caulfield will do what Caulfield wants to do. Jonathan Muntz is going to put his own track in. That's what I've been told. Yep. Is that a secret? Not now, but I think he's going to put his own track in, right? Yes. Would this
Speaker 16consultancy be done in a dark room?
Speaker 17I don't know. With a bathroom attached to it? Anyway, anyway. I'm not a consultant. Let's move on. Oh, boy. So, um, so the end result is is that, yes, Liam should be overseeing the lot, but the problem is, is that Flemington runs its own business, MRC run their own business, ATC run theirs.
Speaker 2I'm hearing, do you know what I'm hearing?
Speaker 17What are you hearing?
Speaker 2And it's getting stronger. What? That the head honchos at RV have had enough, and they want these clubs to merge. Oh, I'm sure they probably, I'm sure they probably
Speaker 17do. And they might stop feeding them in a way. Well, the number I've heard is $45 million. I don't know if that's right. Like, that's what you hear, but. Well, I'll tell you what, you're going to cut out a lot of racing managers, a lot of staff, a lot of, you know, everything like that. I mean, I mean, there's way, way, way more layers. That we, we, we could get rid of. I'll tell you something right now, right? Johnny just sold his business for a lot of money. Johnny walked in there tomorrow. He'd be ripping the guts out of it, as I would in business, because you need to say, we need to stop. We need to stop all this extra spending because we are spending way, way, way, way, way too much. Go the other extreme. Peter Valandi's bloody wouldn't give a kid a dollar for an ice cream because he was that tight, Peter. No, true, he was. And, you know, people should be getting paid good money, and they're probably not getting paid as good. Well, they're Some jobs in Sydney are not as well paid as what Victoria is. I'll tell you one. I don't care. Stewards. Stewards in Melbourne are way better paid than what they are in Sydney. Okay. So Peter wasn't, wasn't big on big and, big and big and big on paying. So getting back to Liam, you, if he was overseeing it all, how does he go to Caulfield and go, nope, I don't want you to do that. We, they don't own it. A race of Victoria does not own Caulfield to be able to do that. They can only advise if they're getting money from, if they're getting money from, uh, from the government and they're getting money from race in Victoria, then race in Victoria will come in and have, and have a lot of say. One thing we
Speaker 16can highlight around Jonathan Munns is he's a very smart businessman, Jonathan, and he's all for racing. He puts a lot of money in himself. So commercially and for the better of the racing industry in the clubs, he's a guy that you can have a good commercial business discussion with. Yeah. He's a sensible, successful businessman. He's highly opinionated, but he's entitled to because he puts his money in. And he's got power in his state. And he's, he's well respected. And I think now you're at the stage where you could get around the table with someone like him and sit and come up with a great solution. So I reckon in five years
Speaker 2time, there'll be the clubs that'll be merged. Do you reckon, Wayne?
Speaker 17Adelaide, Adelaide, when I was a kid, merged and became one club. Sydney's now gone to one club. And the advantage with that is Do you miss Victoria Park? Do I? Um, I can see it visually right now. Anyway, do you reckon they'll be merged in five years? Well, they will because at the end of the day, when I know I've said at the end of the day for a while, folks, at the end of the day, we have to stop wasting money. And we are wasting money. I mean, Moonee Valley's there where it is. The question marks over Moonee Valley, you listen to people and they say, mate, they're in heaps of trouble. The next person says they're selling things off very, very well. And we'll find out in five years time how Moonee Valley have, have fared. We don't want Moonee Valley to fail. We don't want any of these tracks to fail and we don't want any clubs to fail. But when you've got three racing managers, three, you know, you've got two or three different racing managers and different CEOs and industry people and sponsorship departments, marketing departments, all that sort of stuff. We are spending so much money on double-ups and triple-ups that we actually have to stop. What do your mates say on the VRC board? This industry won't be here in a hundred years time. It will not be here in a hundred years.
Speaker 2I don't listen to them.
Speaker 17Well, from what? Well, they don't want to merge. No, they don't want to merge. Well, I've got to tell you this. There's three jets running. Talk about, talk about, look, you're going to smile now. Talk about it. Corfey want to merge with Moonee Valley and Flemington don't want anything to do with it. So just tell it for how it is. Don't look at me like, oh, wow, Wayne, what are you saying? I've never heard it before. Do you like, we've all heard it before.
Speaker 16Adam Lennon, Adam Lennon, elite. Carly Rogers, elite. We've all heard it before. Jonathan Munns, elite. Three smart, commercial, successful business people. But they don't
Speaker 17own it. They don't own it.
Speaker 16I know they don't. I know they don't. But if those three can sit around and have a serious conversation around the future of racing in this state, those three can lead the charge. That's what we need to do. And control, and control the whole direction moving forward. Commercially, you can slowly work through processes and do what you need to do. Let me tell you, we're in very good hands with those three people. They are elite executives. We are running out of time.
Speaker 2We'll be quick here. And all, and
Speaker 17also one thing is, Graeme Hinton is now the boss of Racing NSW. Congratulations to good man. Uncle Peter, Uncle Peter, sayonara. He's gone, right? Yeah. So, all of a sudden. He's jumped off his bandwagon quick. You're all over him. No, it's a fact. No, no NRL tickets for you. None. That's okay. He'll be on the board before you know it. I don't know. You know what? He's done his job. Good on him. Legacy, unbelievable what he's left. I'm very, very happy for him. But my point is, Graeme Hinton's now the boss and he's now in charge. So, at the end of the day, it was the Melbourne versus Sydney. It was the Coles versus Woolworths. So, now with Graeme Hinton there, hopefully the opening of the channels can, the River Murray, let's say, it can just flow through the different states and we can start to get along better. Because when you race horses, when you're an industry participant, we do not put a brick wall up at the Albury-Rodonga border or the South Australian border or the WA border. We go anywhere and everywhere that we need to go. So, as far as participants go, we're not interested in the politics. We want better for everything. In Victoria, we need to stop wasting money We need to do it smarter and better because we need to put more prize money back in the grassroots. No more big, huge races worth more money. I should have whinged about the Turnbull not being worth enough. I should have whinged about the flight stakes not being worth enough because they weren't worth enough. But I thought about it and I thought, nah, you know what? The good horses get to race for big prize money today. The Jimmy Stars win $10 million. We need to get grassroots up and going because it is working to an extent. It is, but the problem is, is that the online auctions are just feeding, the big stables are feeding down to the small stables. The stables in the middle that are the city stables, they're the ones that are struggling more than anyone now.
Speaker 16I think people are identifying that though. I mean, from an English, well, I've got to say from, no, but from an English and from a Magic Millions perspective, I mean, they're both putting a heap of money back into grassroots maidens and stuff. Like we've got Garner Zakhan going to Cranbourne on Friday. Super maidens. And a $45,000 maid and it's worth $150,000. Correct. Like it's like winning a listed race on Saturday.
Speaker 17And if you get Vobis as well, you're going to get a fortune. Yeah, incredible. That's it, yeah. But the thing about this though is that, and I know we're getting off subject, but this is a massive, massive thing. People have bought, I sold a horse the other day, right? And I won't say which sale when. I sold it the other day and the bloke rings me up and said, I'm going to buy this horse. I said, cool. I said, can I ask why? He said, yep, because we've got X amount of money and there's only us and it'll win where we're going to take it. And then that'll give us a better kitty to get up and get going. And I thought, you know what? This is not helping the studs. This is not helping the trainers that go and race the yearlings. And am I putting my own hat on now, which I don't often do? Absolutely I am. So the online auction has been great for us to go and wash our hands of these horses so that they have got a place to go on with and be sold. Because we all know the problems with the knackeries and things like that when we get to the end. So you get rid of the horses before they get to that stage. Then it's someone else's problem. I'm being strong. Straight and honest here. So they are propping up the bottom, bottom end races. But we need the trainers that are there that have got 30s and 40s and 50s in work, that are employing a stack of staff and spending money. We are making nothing. And we as in me, we are making nothing. Now I know Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton make all the money in the Grand Prix and the bloke down the bottom, Yuki, whatever his name was, probably was on a couple of million bucks. I get that. Yeah. We need everybody in the industry to be going well. So we need to get the maidens up more and those restricted races up more, not the benchmark 58s. And do you know why? Because they've had their chance in life. And people will blue and whinge at me for saying it, but no, no, no, no. They've had their chance in life. A bit like George Hanlon once said, son, no point buying a horse for Dubbo because most of them end up there. And that's a fact.
Speaker 2Hey, Vin Cox as well, new chairman of the VRC. Yeah, incredible. Well done to him. Neil Wilson, he departs at the end of the year.
Speaker 16The spring. He's done a great job too. 14 years he's been there. He's been a terrific ambassador for racing. And went through COVID. Yeah, no, he's done a great job.
Speaker 2So there you go. So one under Vinnie will do a great job. Now we're going to take a break. No, in fact, we're going to go to O'Nose and then we're going to wrap up the means test. O'Nose. So the O'Nose brought to you by the Osmond South Yarra. Enjoy happy hour food specials and the footy live and loud at the Osmond South Yarra.
Speaker 17Still haven't been there, but anyway. Stay tuned. They tell me it's a great joy.
Speaker 16We went there Friday, didn't we? Oh, good on you. Did you? Yeah, we went. You went there Friday. I did you. Yeah. Well, we went for the Kirramar Spring Racing Lodge.
Speaker 17You know what? They named that horse of Waller's and J-Mate rode on Saturday after you.
Speaker 16What is it?
Speaker 17The Wonka. What's your O'Nose, Wayne? Lovely, isn't it? You know how you pull up at a set of traffic lights? Yes. And old mate comes up with the squirter bottle and he does your windscreen, everything like that. I saw the greatest one just outside of SEN this morning. A guy was doing 10 pins. He was throwing them in the air and he was juggling. Please. If that's not the greatest O'Nose I've ever seen. On King's Way here, was juggling and then running around with a hat trying to get people to put money in.
Speaker 16Do you know what I find hard you saying that? Like, he's in a circus and there's no circus on. So he's got, this is just proactive.
Speaker 17He's a juggler.
Speaker 16Did he just come from the Royal Show? I'm not sure. Well, he's proactively trying to drive revenue. Like, we're not all in the position, fortunately, for high-end work like you are. Is that your O'Nose? Yes. We waited all that time for that O'Nose. Anyway, yes. Mate, I've only got just, you know, well-written. Well, but we're short enough in the market and three-year-old Philly, New Zealand, stepping up open class. And then my O'Nose was at the start. So I'm going to buy a Cosmic Crusader baseball cap if they're available. I may not wear it, but I'm going to buy one. My O'Nose hay fever, it's a killer.
Speaker 2It's killed me this morning. So I apologise for that.
Speaker 16And you know where you get hay fever? When you move out of South Melbourne with the dog. Oh, do you? And you get down into the suburbs, sort of Parkdale area. Really? 3195. I've got a
Speaker 2couple of minutes for text messages. Tempton. Tempton. Tempton was visually impressive, but to this point, she is one from five at group one level and has been beating up on B-graders. She carried 51 in last year's Everest, carries 56 and a half this year. She'll have to improve five and a half kilos, 1.1 lengths and hope carrying rising is as off as he was last year. In other words, dreaming.
Speaker 16Yeah, well, it's going to run second. It's improved more than the length and a half.
Speaker 2Tempted was in the fast lane on Saturday, still a good win. Is Paradoxim going to the Coolman? Can he be competitive? He can be competitive. He's a good horse, Paradoxim. Half yours must be a goner if Jamie Mellon is riding in Sydney on Caulfield Cup Day. Jimmy Starr will lead up the straight at Flemington. G'day, gents. I'm back tempted to win the champion sprint at $4 after a first up win. It won't go there. She's into $1.90.
Speaker 16Well, how's it going to go there? It's going to the Russell boarding. Well, of course. It's a million and a half dollar bonus on the basis that you win the championship. So it'll be going there for sure. So it won't even matter.
Speaker 2What a bet, say, for a Godolphin horse to win down the straight at Group 1 level. It doesn't matter. Andy Mack, you've said, we'll let you win it, Johnny. What are your thoughts on Autumn Boy's run in the Epsom? Would he be suited by the Cox Plate?
Speaker 16Well, I thought he was going to be a great hope in the Cox Plate in the first place, but he got to the wrong part of the track and, you know, he finished off okay. You know, he had plenty of weight, didn't he? So I'm not quite sure what they'll do with him now. Do they send him to the mile the last day?
Speaker 17Is he one of these horses at three? It hasn't gone on up for him?
Speaker 16Oh, no, I think he's come up. I think he's been going good. I just think that Epsom on the weekend, the way, you know, the race was run, he was back on the inside and I don't think he really appreciated that. He's a good horse, that horse. He's a ripper.
Speaker 2All right, boys, let's go through our number one seeds there for these future races. The Caulfield Cup. I'll go Cosmic Crusader.
Speaker 17Eliana, but she's not running.
Speaker 16Yeah. I'm still Zaran.
Speaker 2All right, then. The Everest, Koeing Rising. Yep, it'll win. Koeing Rising for you. King Charles, Autumn Glow. It'll win. In front of Char Wolf. Oh, please. Way in front of him. Seriously. And then we go Cox Plate. Jeez, it's a tough one, the Cox Plate. I'm going to go.
Speaker 17Sir Dillies for me. I'm going to go Cosmic Crusader.
Speaker 2And I'm Birdmanning. Birdman. And then we go to the Coolmore, the next episode. Next episode. Sit and steer, it'll win. And then the Melbourne Cup.
Speaker 16No idea. Probably Aiden's, maybe Aiden's horse defiantly or Eliana. I think, I mean, from a local perspective, I'd be having something on Eliana.
Speaker 2I'm with, um, Small Fry. It's got to get into the Melbourne Cup. What is it named after you? What is it? It's got Wonka and Small Fry, eh? Wonka and Small Fry. One for Terry Henderson. Something for the battlers?
Speaker 16Uh, well, Friday, I've got gone as a carn with our crew. The big crew going to Cranbourne for the Inglis Maiden. So I think it'd be hard to beat there. Um, we got the money with Barracks last week, which was good. And we were a bit unlucky with, uh, with, um, with the Farnan horse. Yeah, probably should have won the one that. Uh, Jamie, Jamie Road, Cavill Avenue, we're a bit unlucky. So I would say have something on it. Aurora Belle was a good win, wasn't it? Very good. So we'll go there and then hopefully Solcombe, if we don't get too much rain, can be competitive in the, in the Herbert Power at Caulfield on Saturday.
Speaker 17Wayne? Uh, a couple of nice runners in Sydney on Saturday. Hillbilly Elegy. He's running in the, running in the Globen, gloaming. And, uh, one I've been waiting for, for so long that keeps drawing the worst barrier and we scratch him every week. Fierce. He's going well that horse.
Speaker 16Is that one of the great man's, Rupert's?
Speaker 2Yep. He can name a horse that can't be. We always leave on a positive note. This is from Tony from Adelaide. Wayne Hawks, no lies, only the truth. And John O'Neill is an owner and a punter. Brilliant. Um, love giddy up. So there you go. Thank you Tony. Who said that? Tony Sandy. Tony Sandy.
Speaker 16Well, can we get it? Can we get a voucher or something for him? It's gotta be something we can get. We'll get him a, we'll get him a Ribeiras voucher or alternatively, we can get him a voucher at the Osborne if he wants to go there, I can organize that. Get him a Cosmic Crusader. He's coming in, either Ribeiras or the Osborne, whatever he wants. If he texts back in, we'll sort that out for him.
Speaker 2Um, good on you boys. Hey, Wayne, have a great day. Gareth, I'll have a day. Whatever day I want. Great to see you, my friend. I'll have, well, I'll have whatever day I want. Yeah. Tell me to have a great day. Hey, you keep on dominating, Johnny. I'm trying, mate. And you know what? Some people in those comments, they're having a crack at you, a Cosmic Crusader. Everyone like you, I think they're a little unfair. So those people only crack at you, their opinion's always right.
Speaker 16Correct. Yeah. Well, all I will say is. Mikey, Mikey wrote it like a jet. It's obviously a proper horse because only proper horses win that race. Time for a break. We'll come back with plenty more.
Speaker 1That was The Means Test. It's now time for the Monday Breakdown with Mick Gannon.
Speaker 2How are you, Mickie G? G'day, G-Hall. How was the weekend? It was great, mate. It was good fun. What about for you? Horses to follow? from that Group 1 meeting at Randwick on Saturday?
Speaker 19Yeah, cracking meeting it was, and the rail on a true position, G. I love seeing that. Just always good, fair racing. So I love that. Let's go to Cubicio in the first there. Rejoice to Fireball. This horse, she was exceptional there in a high-pressure race late. I know she had a light weight, but she was really good. So we can follow her moving forward for sure. We'll leave the two-year-olds at them and go around again. Genesis Runner, deary me, just missed the start. Blinkers first time. He'll be winning a race. I think they head to a spring champion, so he'll be competitive there. Polymnia in race number five. Gareth Airborne, looking forward to following Polymnia. And Charwolf. Well, you know, we spoke about Charwolf. Hopefully there's a bit of rain around next time. Blinkers go on. I'll be keen to back him because we'll get a price.
Speaker 2He was very good, wasn't he? Exceptional. It was a debate today whether they should just forget about the King Charles and go to the Cox Plate. But do you think he could beat Autumn Glow with the Blinkers going on? What's going on, Mick?
Speaker 19I said it two weeks ago. I think Johnny called me a fool. So I certainly haven't changed my mind. You do need everything to fall your way, of course. You're going to need a rain-affected track. You need the Blinkers on and you need some speed in the race. You get those three things. I think you can.
Speaker 2Tempted going towards an Everest. How far will she be behind Koeing Rising?
Speaker 19What was she beating last year? Two? Yeah, two and a bit lengths, yeah. Yeah, I think they both improved similar amounts year on year. So probably be beating two lengths. Again, but it's Koeing Rising, Tempted, Daylight. It could be Koeing Rising, Daylight, Tempted, Daylight. But nonetheless, she's in such good order, Gareth, and she'll just keep winning races.
Speaker 2Can't wait for that trial tomorrow. So looking forward to that. And I wonder what they'll do with Jimmy Starr. Still no decision just yet whether they go to an Everest or they go to a Sydney Stakes or they just freshen up and go straight to that champion sprint. A few people that are back tempted doesn't look like she'll go to the champion sprint. She'll stay for the Russell boarding. Anyway, Mickey, any other news you're liking, I think, today?
Speaker 19No, that's about it, G. No, just on holidays with the family. So I haven't done any form today. I had the day off, which is good. Yeah. And we'll freshen up. We'll be back for a bit of a preview for Wednesday racing and straight back into it for the weekend, of course.
Speaker 2Congratulations with the Roosters as well. What a big victory.
Speaker 19Unbelievable. The most dominant performance you've seen in a game of rugby league, trying to win by one, was. Yes. scary because they probably should have won by 40, G.
Speaker 2Yeah. Who would have thought?
Speaker 19And they've just fallen in.
Speaker 2Remarkable. What a. It was. The Knights were brave, however, to not.
Speaker 19Unbelievable. Yeah. And, yeah, full credit to the Knights because they had no right to even finish anywhere near what they did. So they've done really, really well. And it's good for the game to have the Knights firing.
Speaker 2Good on you, Mick. Thanks for that.
Speaker 19Thank you, G.
Speaker 2There's Mickey Gannon there. Tune in to Racing WA TV on 7 Plus or nracing.com. The ultimate destination for everything racing in the West. Pete Anthonis joins us now.
Speaker 20G'day, Pete. Yeah, g'day, Gareth.
Speaker 2What did you make of Cosmic Crusader? You were at Flemington there on Saturday.
Speaker 20Yeah, he was fantastic, wasn't he? And Willie Pike, he just summed it up just early. I know it was like a pretty simplistic speed map. We spoke about this last week. And he didn't have to get too far back behind any of the stayers. But the perfect tempo was set by a lot of industry men. And, really, he just had to keep the horse comfortable. He had a bit more. More race fitness on site than a few of his key rivals. And he's completely lapped up those conditions, as we alluded to. He's obviously performed really well on those, you know, wetter side of soft, if you like, surfaces in WA before. And, yeah, he just got perfect conditions there on the weekend. So, I wouldn't say it was probably his best performance. I think he's still just showing signs that he's still just improving. You'll probably appreciate, you know, the similar conditions next time out if you can get them. But he's going to a Caulfield Cup. G, is that where his next run is?
Speaker 2Unless you know something I don't, Pete.
Speaker 20I haven't heard too much, to be honest. So, you know, we'll wait and see. But I think he'll be, obviously, very competitive if he heads to a Caulfield Cup or a Cox Plate. So, anyway, we'll wait and see. What's he a better chance in? I think he's a better chance in the Caulfield Cup.
Speaker 2Yeah. What price is he for the Caulfield Cup? Is he still $17?
Speaker 20Surely he's coming in. I think he's coming in. I think he's going to be a bit since then. But I saw he was $7 at a Cox Plate this morning. But I think, look, Sedelius is going to be another big improver out of that race. And, obviously, Eliana's going that way. They're the obvious two main dangers. I think the Caulfield Cup's looking a bit weaker to my eye so far.
Speaker 2No, he's still $17. We'd bet $365 for a Caulfield Cup. Cosmic Crusader. But you can't back, as I told everyone today, like, how can you back him if you don't know he's going there? You just do your money cold. Yeah, exactly right. The punt you're taking is you're trying to think like Bob Good luck with that. At Kalgoorlie on Saturday, the Swan Draft Kalgoorlie Cup. Great to see my old mate Ash Maley taste success. And Tash Faithful as well with Royal Law to take out the Cal Cup. There was a few horses like Opportunistic and the Jester Sun was outside the placings but wasn't far off them. Opportunistic was second last and Karamundi was last. So what did you make of this year's Cal Cup?
Speaker 20Well, look, it was obviously a day where you needed to be on pace. You needed to be inside, especially. Horses rails and run and staying inside lanes in the straight were significantly advantaged, but look, that's not too much of a surprise. Given what we've seen, you know, years gone by, it was just probably a little bit worse than I think a few of us expected. So it's not knocking Royal Law at all. And obviously Ash Maley and his team, he had the race of the year marked. You'd have to say, got the horse peaking on the day and look in the end was able to hold off Sowar who was a hundred to one chance, who was leaders back. And bursting for a gap in the straight. But it's just one of those things, Jay, isn't it? When you've got the ability to settle forward on horses, you're going to win more races than you lose. And on those sort of occasions, if you get too far back, that's just how things unfold. And yeah, it wasn't a great day to be back in the field. Ginger Baker running third, probably the biggest flashing light of the day. But where's he going to next time out? I'm not too sure. Yeah, you're just, you're looking at this meeting and to a certain extent, Flemington as well, clearly two distinct patterns and both of those tracks. And you're just trying to work out how do I assess them? How do I assess these horses going forward? Will the form hold up? You have to just trust the starting price profile for a few of these runners who didn't get into the right part of the track.
Speaker 2What a winner in the Golden Saddle.
Speaker 20Well, yeah, I mean, you're looking at the beaten margins of some of these horses, Jay, in the starting price. And obviously Sensation handled the corner like a 25-year-old me at 2:00 AM. And look, Sensation's laid out 15 lengths or so in the straight. One to win is basically there, which is the cracking and everything else is never, ever a likely chance of winning the race. Really difficult horse to assess going into the race. He was coming off the freshen up. There was three winners of freshen ups, two of them for Steve Wolf's yard, which was too good for Wolfie, far too good for me. There were even money for Odenaka there early in the day. But one to win are just a really difficult horse to assess. But again, Sean O'Donnell put the horse into the race, found leaders back from Barrier 7, wasn't an easy thing to do. And look, you just put yourself into the race, you get things in your favor sometimes and yeah, you can't argue with the result because everything else is beaten by multiple lengths. So it was just one of those days, G. -
Speaker 2Yeah, and last stylebender leads all of the way. Mitchell Pateman prepares. He was emotional, Mitchie, because last stylebender was in the Yarra Dale Cullens and it was the Ronsay Sprint and he never looked like getting beat. Once again, he was hard up on the fence. And when it all said and done, it was disappointing to have a race meeting with so much prize money up for grabs with horses that had no chance, basically. - Yeah. They need to get these tracks right. I know it's difficult and they haven't got the money, so is those Metro tracks. But if they want Metro races and they want million dollar races, then they've got to try and work as hard as they can to get it right. -
Speaker 20Yeah. And obviously there's some by-play, obviously. We've got the Thursday meeting following up on the Saturday, whether it's track compaction or whatever it is, rails staying in the true for both meetings. They obviously had a really tricky week as well. The previous weekend, there was what, 70 to 80 mils of rain. So again, there's all these different features. We've got to take into consideration. We're obviously both not track managers, but yeah, it wasn't a great look for the sport. So we'll just take our medicine and hopefully with Ascot, return to Ascot, there's more weather this week in Perth, and I think everyone's looking forward to getting back to HQ. But yeah, as you said, obviously last style bender, again, another horse taking yourself, taking luck out of the equation, G, and again, was able to just keep getting the job done, just setting the even speed and kicking away from the turn. So I think it was a really, really, really good start to the weekend, and I think it was a really, really good start to the weekend. I think it was a really good start to the weekend. I think it was a really, really good start to the weekend. so we'll wait and see anything from flemington oh we'll just we have to mention spoof chino don't we it was the most insane finish i reckon i've seen all year i mean i don't know what was going on there for the last 400 meters let alone the last 50 but um he probably could have won that and it would have been one of the craziest days and five minutes probably we would have seen but in the end it didn't happen but um yeah it was look it's a great performance of smooth chino that's a new career peak for me on what i've got or as close to a career peak as we've seen he'll be absolutely going again next time out and i i think the straight track actually suits him really well he's just got that very good ability to just accelerate with a sustained 400 to 600. so i think both the horse and aussie galati will learn a lot from that start and we'll can't wait to see which race he goes through next time hopefully they have
Speaker 2Maybe the champion sprint could be his race at group one level down that straight at the back end of the carnival on the opening day of that or the last day of the Flemington carnival. So, yeah, it was good to see Smoocheno do what he did there on Saturday. Benny Mellon was fined $2,000 for not riding out his horse. Austin Ghilardi was, what, fined $1,000. But pro Austin, I think Benny stopped riding, so he stopped riding. He was his first hook down the straight there at Flemington.
Speaker 20Yeah, it's a pretty confusing finish, isn't it? Yeah. Just with all the visual stimulation and trying to work out where exactly the post is. But, yeah, I think everyone's got to learn a bit from that. But I'm certainly in the corner of Smoocheno going forward if you can find a similar field next time out.
Speaker 2Good on you, Pete. Thanks for that. Cheers, Gareth. There's Pete Anthonis there. That was the breakdown of Belmont. We'll take a break. We'll find you some winners today with Bag of Tips.

Speaker 12It is indeed. Yeah, the man with no beard. It might have worked, actually. It might very well have worked. Race four, number one, loaded. A very, very nicely bred four-year-old horse. Bit of a barrier rogue. We'll get back to Lars, but he'll be swooping home down the outside and hopefully knocking them off. What have we got, about $3.50-ish? Something like that with our friends at Bet365.
Speaker 2I think it's loaded to $2.60. Oh, beautiful. There you go.
Speaker 12Perfect. Well done. Good on you, mate. Thanks for that.
Speaker 2There's Paulie Sebastiani. Nick Nurdin joins us now.
Speaker 21G'day, Nick. Morning, Garth. Yeah, Paulie Bluesman, like myself. So good to see you. We're on the same train now. I was keen on loaded as well, so I hope we can get the result.
Speaker 2We're going to load up on loaded. It's your next best, race four, number one. What do you like loaded?
Speaker 21He's jumped out really well, this horse. As Paulie sort of mentioned, he's an ironman minstrel. He's bred very well. Looks like they've sort of held him back a little bit. But in those jump outs, he showed a good turn of foot. The outside draw will be a little bit tricky to navigate, but he is a horse that has had some issues in the barriers by the looks of things. So I think maybe being loaded last would be an advantage for him today. So if he gets the start right, I think it would be hard to beat. That is the question. I think he's a little bit weary, but he does find a pretty moderate maiden, I thought, to kick off his career.
Speaker 2And your best bet comes up in race five.
Speaker 21Yeah, going with Vanta. We're actually getting a little bit of a price about this horse. I sort of thought he might go the other way. He was $1.95 this morning, and I thought you might sort of chime in, but he's sort of out to $2.20 now. His debut run at Mornington, he was at home there. He was really good from back in the field, really attacked the line over 1,500 metres. Up to the mile today, packing him synthetic, it's usually sort of a momentum track. We've got to be building, and that looks like the style of the horse he is. And they do chuck the blinkers on him today. So at around even money or better, I thought he was worth a play as well today on the program race five, number 10.
Speaker 2And your quaddie, brother?
Speaker 21Quaddie today, first leg will go 6, 8, and 5. 6, 8, 5 in the first leg. Second leg will go 1, 5, and 7. 1, 5, and 7. Third leg will go 8 and 10. 8 and 10. And they'll come home with 5, 8, 9, and 10. 5, 8, 9, and 10 there for the quaddie. We were originally supposed to be at sales today, but they've moved it to the synthetic at Pakenham. There's been a few scratchings, but I think all in all, the meetings held up pretty well.
Speaker 2Yeah. Yeah. And well done to everyone involved there at Southside Racing, because they saved two meetings over the last three or four days. Wonderful asset, the Pakenham synthetic track. And yeah, it's good to see that we've got racing now on a Monday, especially when it's a public holiday. It's like. Would have cost Victoria a little bit if there was no racing today with a public holiday being up there in Queensland and New South Wales. So let's see if we can find a few winners today. Good on you, Nick. Thanks, guys. Betsy.com.au's Dean Watling. He's the face of Betsy, I reckon, and he joins us now. G'day, Dino. Morning, G. How are you? What do you like at Warwick Farm?
Speaker 22Well, there's a couple later in the program, Gene. The features, you could say. I'm going to take on both short-priced ferrets in race 7 and 8. Race 7, we could take. A look here. I think Ice Cool's grossly unders. I think the Kieran Marr train can roll on, G. Silver Wedding, I think, is an each-way special there. Race 7, number 8. Really smart trialler. 1,000-metre record reads 1 from 1. I think with a speed on up front with hidden motive in the race 2, Kieran McElroy can camp in behind him and go bang at the 100. Good to go back-to-back, G. Race 8, all the way down the bottom of the page, number 19, Bruce IM. Really nice gallop. G comes out of trial time, Black Book. I was in the stables there Friday, as you know, and Brave liked his horse as well. So, race 8, number 19, Bruce IM, each-way, G. Both of those, race 7 and 8.
Speaker 2And you can get your full set of tips at betsy.com.au, Dino, with all of your content. Trials, your best bets, your staking plans, everything.
Speaker 22That's it, G. The Works Burger, yep, jump on that, the website, all the article, G. You can get all today's plays via there. But, yeah, they're my two best later in the program.
Speaker 2Good on you, mate. Thanks for that. Cheers, G. There's betsy.com.au's Dean Watling. Luke Ovanessian joins us at Warwick Farm. Race 4, number 4, Burn the Sky. Race 7, number 8, Silver Wedding. And race 8, number 5, Albany Road. So, 4, 4, 7, 8, 8, 5. And at Musselbrook, race 3, number 2, Triple Yes. And race 7, number 2, Missile Magnet. Doombin, today, a Metro meeting there. Race 4, number 8, Buddha Bar. And race 6, number 10, Don't Doubt Missy Each Way. So, 4, 8, 6, 10. And Lincoln Moore at Gawler likes race 2, number 5, The Black Harp. Race 6, number 1, Talpo Tiger. And race 4, number 1, Super Choice. So, that's the tips there at Gawler for Lincoln Moore. I'll take a break on the other side of it. I'll come back with some winners in the trots. This is Giddy Up, and we'll continue on the means test next.

She was tipping winners in the early part of those meetings in New Zealand anyway. She just wasn't missing, and she joins us here. Hello, Jane. Another fill-up for your followers on the weekend.
Speaker 23Good morning to you. Yeah, it's still morning, just. Yeah, look, it was a good start to the day. It did go downhill a little bit later in the afternoon, but a few good collects early on, which was good.
Speaker 2What did you make of the breed? Did you make any mistakes there at Group 3 level?
Speaker 23Look, the class certainly rose to the top. The Tiaka trained Qualial Farasha was the horse going into the race that had the form on the board in terms of what she's been able to do earlier in her career. I think she's been Group 1 placed about four times. So she always looked the horse on paper. It was just the rain-affected track conditions that was the question mark with her because her form is typically on top of the ground. But she. She actually got through conditions really well. She was well ridden by a Wurimu pin, bounced out of the barriers, put her in a prominent spot, kept her well away from the rail, kept her in the better ground, and she won the race quite easily in the end. So the way that I said, as it looked on paper and the form, it stacked up and she won really well. So she's not actually nominated for any of the major features in New Zealand. So it'll be interesting to see what Tiaka do with her. Obviously, they do have the barn in Melbourne now, so I'm not sure of the plans for her going forward. But there are a couple of nice runs in behind her. Royal Flower was really brave. I think she'll pick up a stakes race at some point in Guild Talk. She'll go to the races third up next time, and I think she'll be really hard to beat.
Speaker 2And at Matamata and the Gaimai Stakes, Astoria Brooke was too strong for Toni Pyke. Toni Pyke, I should say.
Speaker 23Yeah, she's a mare that's just in sensational form at the moment. Toni's got her absolutely thriving. She's sort of raced through the winter months and she's won four. three of her last four. um including her last three in a row and they stepped up to stakes company she'd competed at stakes company once before and hadn't really been overly competitive but they got her confidence up and it was aided by the most patient ride you'd see from michael mcnab uh shouldn't come out of the barriers um overly quickly settled uh at the rear of the field and he just had to wait and he did it was patient he waited for the gaps she was traveling he had a horse underneath of him but um he did have to wait till it opened up and she burst through and won really nicely he's a jockey that is just full of confidence at the moment michael mcnab he's twice been a premiership winner in new zealand but the last couple of seasons he's been hindered by falls and injuries and um he's taken a commanding lead in the new zealand jockeys premiership already this season 12 wins ahead of his nearest rival and he's striking at around 25 percent so um he's certainly on a mission michael mcnab and he did a great job on astoria brook top shelves worth following out of the race the draw did her no favor she was trapped wide the whole way hayley hasman rode her i think she probably took off a little bit too soon on her um and the run told at the line um what you wish for an honest performance by that horse but all honors with the winner in astoria
Speaker 2brook and what'd you make of well
Speaker 23written uh look initially probably a little bit of disappointment but obviously uh post race she's pulled up with a thumb so uh genuine excuses out of the epsom look my thoughts going into the race that um she was pretty harshly um judged by the um by the handicapper in sydney uh look i thought she was carrying too much weight for what she's done um but despite that i think the thumps is a pretty genuine excuse for the reason why we didn't see the turn of foot we normally see from and she was interesting in running too because she's sort of buffering from horse to horse and initially it looked like she was being knocked around but when you actually looked at the replay she was the way she was running and she was really running around and um when you suffer the thumps and your breathing's not in the correct rhythm you can see why she'd be under the pressure that she was under so i think genuine excuses for her hopefully she can bounce back in a golden eagle good on
