Giddy Up Full Show (04/11/26)

The Melbourne Cup delivered a spectacular day at Flemington, with Point of Law winning the race for jockey Ethan Brown and trainer Kieran Maher. The horse, previously owned by King Charles, was purchased by John O'Neill's syndicate, and Maher's mother Eileen was credited with helping secure the deal. Maher created history by becoming the first trainer to trifecta the Melbourne Cup, with seven runners and six finishing in the top ten. Robbie Williams' entertainment and the VRC's organisation were widely praised, with Kylie Rogers credited for an outstanding event. Ethan Brown's win was celebrated as a remarkable comeback story after a serious race fall, and his decision to ride Point of Law over Zardozi proved decisive. Benny Allen's front-running ride on Royal Supremacy drew praise, while Bo Mertens' ride on Kislyar was criticised for ignoring the pre-race plan. The panel also discussed the scratching of Nick Ryan's horses after EPO was found in his car, with calls for strong penalties, and Asterix's race-day scratching following an honest treatment error, which sparked debate about race-day security and the lack of emergencies in the Cup. Harry Coffey's courageous ride with a broken collarbone was another highlight.

Speaker 2So come on, let me entertain you. Yes. Good morning. If you weren't entertained yesterday, you'll never be entertained at Flemington. It was one of the great days I've ever been to on a racetrack. Robbie Williams was the star along with Kira Ma, Point of Law and Ethan Brown as they combined to win the Melbourne Cup. It will be a big show on a Wednesday as you would expect straight after the Melbourne Cup. And it's a big hello to you listening on your local SCN track and RSN 927 dials wherever you may be listening on the SCN and RSN apps. If you're listening to us a little later on on the podcast and of course watching us on racing.com. It is our greatest day of racing. The Melbourne Cup. It is the race that stops the nation and it delivered a show there yesterday, Flemington fitting of that occasion. Well done to the VRC and Kylie Rogers and her team. Robbie Williams was something else. Brilliant entertainment before the cup and then he just lit up that stage after the races were finished there at Flemington. It was a sensational day. Fish has got a lot to live up to now on Champions Day and then Point of Law. What was the King thinking? He sold this horse. Johnny Gosden. I don't know if he wanted to sell it. My mail is. But the King sold this horse to Kira Marr and his connections. I'm saying that Eileen Marr should take a bow. Whatever she said to the King at that luncheon during the Royal Ascot meeting has been the reason why Point of Law has been doing what he's been able to do to win a Melbourne Cup. And then Kira Marr's genius. This horse took off doing some track work at Werribee. Before that Geelong Cup victory. And he's been able to manage this horse beautifully. Obviously, he's got a big motor. He's a lightly raced dayer that's won a Geelong Cup and now a Melbourne Cup. And who knows what he could be? He ran the fastest. Take this into consideration. He ran the fastest last 200 metres of the day at the end of two miles. So he could be something else, that horse. And Kira Marr becomes the first trainer to train. The trifecta in the Melbourne Cup. And he had seven horses that competed in our great race and six of them, of course, finished in the top ten. So he had a big day and hopefully we'll catch up with Kira a little later on. 0-4-double-9-7-3-6-7-3-6. He's broken down the Melbourne Cup and the sectionals for us. So looking forward to catching up with Will. We'll talk some harness racing and some greyhound racing towards the back end of the show. Speaker 2Calvin McEvoy, hello to you, mate. You're no longer the reigning Melbourne Cup champion trainer.
Speaker 3Morning, Gareth. Yeah, and I continue to be. Actually, I was reminded at about 3.05 yesterday by a few people. 3 or 5am The king is dead But no congratulations to Johnny And the Kiramar team What a mighty effort
Speaker 2Yeah what a mighty effort Just put that Like to have Seven runners in a Melbourne Cup First of all Troy Is a magnificent achievement But then to trifecta the race And then six of those horses Out of the seven Yeah have finished in the top ten
Speaker 4Absolutely amazing effort And hats off to Kieran And the whole team I know they work bloody hard, and what an effort. It's a fantastic effort.
Speaker 2Where do we start? We'll start off with the trainer, Kieran Maher. Like, what a spring he's had. He wins the Everest, he wins the Coolmore, and now he trifectas the Melbourne Cup. And I was talking to a couple of prominent trainers yesterday. Now, I don't want to reveal their names because I don't think that's fair, but they were telling me, they go, Gareth, I think you surpassed Chris Waller as the best trainer in the land. And they were explaining why. Obviously, they've been ahead of the game with all the technology that they have got with the data and all that kind of stuff. Wayne Hawks disagrees with all of that. But with AI and everything now, they've been able to put into some practices that obviously are successful. And now their results are unbelievable, really, Calvin.
Speaker 3Yeah, it is. And look, this game is a numbers game and they've got a lot of horses. But what they have got, what Kieran has done is created an amazing team. And I mean, we see that at Ballarat that, you know, Nikki White who runs Ballarat, she does an amazing job. Obviously Jack Turnbull, he's built around him these great people and obviously instilled confidence into them. And it is quite remarkable. Like I was thinking about it last night to get, if any trainer tries to set seven horses for a race and let's use a staying race for an example, To have the, have seven of them probably run to their absolute best. And I know one of them, Mr. Monaco finished, I mean, it was top 10, but the other six have finished, but they have ran their best race. And I think that is a mighty effort. Often you, you know, you set a few horses for a race. You might, two of them might run well and one of them might fail, but he had no failures, which was remarkable. So credit to him.
Speaker 4The team that he has built, it's amazing how much the game has changed over the last sort of 10 years. And you watch both Kieran's team and Chris's team, and I think Kieran's team is larger. Now, I'm not sure whether that's just from view, the people that get around Kieran and the people that you see with him and the things that he's got in place. And I know Chris has a really good team as well. Kieran's team just seems to be that little bit bigger. But I think that everybody does their job. Uh, they're so involved and someone spoke about it the other day and I was listening very carefully. The young people that he's got coming through, the good young people coming through, you go back to Bart's days and TJ's days and CS's days, they, they literally had, um, a foreman. They didn't even have assistant trainers back then. Um, and that's all they had. So I think that, uh, the team that is built now, it's so much more professional and there, There's a lot more resources with all the extra stuff that we can use now. So, yeah, but again, you've still, you do need the numbers.
Speaker 2That helps. Yeah, that is interesting. Kieran likes to employ people under 30. Like Sam Kavanagh is his CEO and he's 27.
Speaker 3I know, and he was his driver before that. Yeah. But it's actually funny, isn't it? And his dad's Brett Kavanagh. That's a real restrictive factor. The two biggest trainers in Australia, the two most successful trainers, Chris Waller and Kieran Marr. The polar opposites, though, aren't they? From the outset, and I don't know Chris that well, but Kieran's loose and he's out and he's got this big entourage of people and everyone's doing their bit. And Chris sort of looks like the absolute professional. He's there setting the work for everything. So they are probably polar opposites that come to a very similar result.
Speaker 2I think Kieran Maher's got this genius about him, however, and he would be a lot of system-based, and you guys would know better than I. So it'd be system-based with the team that he's got. Has to be. Has to be. But they still tell me like, like Sydney's a little bit different to Melbourne because Jack's got a different eye to, who runs Sydney? Joe. Yeah, to Joe, the Frenchman. Yeah. So, and then Kieran comes along and then. Tinkers. Yeah, and Tinkers with it.
Speaker 4And that's probably what good trainers do. A good trainer can come along and say, right, I had that horse going six home, three tomorrow. It looks a little bit light. So let's back off on that. So your good staff, your Jack and your Joe, they can put everything into place. And then Kieran can literally go between both and have a differing eye. The other thing I think, which is really good, is if you're not looking at a horse every day, you don't sort of get used to it. And you look at it and you can notice the intricacies and the difference rather than having to look at it every day. And you might miss something like that.
Speaker 3Another part of the genius is Kieran finding these blokes and girls, these guys and girls. actually building them up and and yes you know that there there's been a lot of people leave kieran you know dave annabelle they've all been successful so there's something in that and another point of it is sourcing these horses like you've got to show some balls and credit to will bourne and and his bloodstock team to go and buy these horses they're expensive and you know they're continuing to source and i looked at what they spent at the tat sale last week they spent something like three or four million there and it's hard to like you know they're putting their They're putting their neck on the line and buying them and they're probably the only people doing it. And it was fascinating
Speaker 2talking to Kieran yesterday regarding the preparation for Point of Law. So he galloped him strongly there on the Monday before the Cup. They even told me that they gave him some stride work on the Tuesday morning before the Melbourne Cup,
Speaker 3Kelvin. Yeah, but look, that's not out of the order. I mean, we worked half yours the Monday, maybe not a stronger gallop and he worked morning off, but he's a strong going horse, his Point of Law. We watched him in the Geelong Cup so I think when you get those elite stayers that are fit and tough and hardy, you can't hurt them. He's probably the sort of horse that the more work you give him, the more he wants. So that comes back to them knowing
Speaker 4the horse. And the last thing you want is him going in too fresh. If he goes in too fresh and he overdoes it during the race, you're in more trouble than you're doing it three days before, that's for sure.
Speaker 2And to get a horse off John Gosden and improve it, that is some training performance as well because it's difficult to do.
Speaker 3But the horse had only had four runs. Four or five starts, yeah. I think that was his sixth run yesterday. So saying improvement is one thing, but the horse has improved. The horse was probably very untapped. Sorry, Johnny. I think he is very untapped. He listens too. William Haggis would have told him if he wasn't. You said he ran the quickest last furlong of the race of the whole day, which is remarkable to think, but it shows how slow they went and it was just a sprint for 200, wasn't it?
Speaker 2Let's talk about the Melbourne Cup. Obviously, Ethan Brown as well, he gave it a peach. He needed to get this horse to settle and I listened to him talk after the race and he goes, I was just concentrating the first part of the race to get him to settle and I looked up and I was thought, what's going on here? Royal Supremacy is like 15 lengths in front of the second horse. If I had to give my 3-2-1 out for the jockey's performances in the Cup, you've three to Ethan Brown. I'd give one to Sammy Clippard on Jujica Bowie. He did a great job to get that horse into third from that draw. But two to Benny Allen. I thought his ride on Royal Supremacy was superb. I couldn't believe what Bo Mertens was doing on Kislyar. On a horse that's a 4,000 metre horse and going those sectionals that he was. He gets minus 5. Yeah, he gets minus 50. I don't think he'd be riding for Joseph O'Brien ever again.
Speaker 4Benny Allen was outstanding. He was outstanding, wasn't he? That was an amazing ride. I watched two horses in the. It's very hard to concentrate on every horse without going back and watching the replay 16 times. So I was watching Jujica Bowie because I've got a friend that's in it. And so I was very keen to watch it. And I watched Benny Allen because I was keen for him to do very well. When I saw him go to the lead like he did, I thought, Jesus Christ, what's he doing here? And then I started having a look at the sectionals. I go, he's getting away with this. So he was, he timed it really, really nicely. And I think it was an outstanding ride. And other than the horse, maybe not staying or maybe just bottoming out that last little bit, but he still ran fifth. If he rides the horse any other way, it probably runs 12th. So hats off to Benny. That was outstanding.
Speaker 3I think we also see, and we see it time and time again. Do you agree with my votes, by the way? I agree with, I think, Ethan Brown three, and he was, you know, I know he's back in the field, but Melbourne Cup's the one in the second wave, not the first. And you can see he waited and came through. Sammy Clipperton, very good. Yeah, I thought Ben Allen was great. I don't know whether if he'd held onto him just a little bit longer. There was nothing making ground. There was nothing going when he was going. And I think if he'd known that, if he had a rear vision mirror, if he'd held on another 100 metres or 200 metres, you just never know. But I agree, Bo Mertens, like the fact that I believe that that horse was sent out here with the instructions to go a good, strong gallop. That's where this Kisly would be at his best. And yeah, I heard that connections were not too pleased with the ride and not taking the field up to the lead horse.
Speaker 2So the only possible excuse for that is that and Benny Mellon Road, Benny Mellon Road, Kisly are in that Moonee Valley Cup and they went a slow pace in that Moonee Valley Cup as well. And then they go to Flemington and like he was going sectionals that weren't to his advantage there on yesterday, Kisly but whether he just, I don't know, maybe he doesn't want to go. I don't know. But there was just, it was weird to see that horse
Speaker 3be ridden like that when he's when his strength is to try and break their hearts. Well, the problem is it's not looking when the horse is already 15 lengths off of Royal Supremacy. It was at the 2000 meter mark when Ben Allen started to stretch and, and Bo didn't go with the horse. That was once yet, once he's five legs off, it's very hard to then make it up.
Speaker 4And he wasn't going hard. He was running 12s and 13s.
Speaker 2How frustrating is that then for trainers when they've talked about a pregame plan and you're watching it unfold and you're thinking this is not
Speaker 3what we planned. And you know, we've watched the post-race jockey interviews and nearly every jockey behind just said terrible tempo, horrible. And I spoke to, I mean, I did it with Zach Lloyd last night and he just said Hopewell Rock, who was the favourite, just pulled the whole way. Didn't stay. Just pulled the whole way and gave himself no chance. So, um, yeah, you know, it's hard. We don't have that many two mile races in Australia, do we? So it's hard for the jocks to get the tempo right
Speaker 2I suppose. Um, how good is his point of law? Like is he? Freak. Yeah. I think he's, I think he's extremely good. So Queen Elizabeth Cox played next year. Look out. Yeah.
Speaker 3He might be a wait for age superstar. I don't know. Like it's sixth start. That is remarkable, isn't it? Yeah. It is remarkable.
Speaker 2Um, very good. And I still can't believe that King sold him. I can't wait to catch up with Johnny. It's fascinating that it's sort of. We just need to get King Charles on. He's an avid listener of the show. Cause I heard him. I remember talking, I don't know. I've, I've heard I've like, I've think I've he's been quoted saying that he loved to win a Melbourne cup.
Speaker 4Yeah. And he could have won the Melbourne cup. I'd probably question Mark. He's interested in horse racing.
Speaker 2Well, he's interested in the Geelong cup
Speaker 3because he went to school in Geelong. Yes. And he could have won the Geelong cup. He could have won the Geelong cup too.
Speaker 2Um, what else do we take out of the
Speaker 4cup? So Joseph O'Brien. I'll tell you what we take out. If, if, um, Jess Wilson probably needs to be quite happy that Kylie Rogers is not running against her for, uh, for, uh, the state election. I can tell you because Kylie Rogers did an unbelievable job yesterday. That, um, I haven't been to a race meeting like that for a long, long time where it felt so good. Everywhere I went, I spent a fair bit of time up in the new grandstand. I was down in the mounting yard for Robbie Williams. That was, um, an experience like I've never had. That was just unbelievable. I was, uh,
Speaker 3sat next to, I was standing next to JP McManus when Robbie was playing. He was enjoying that as well. Geez, you're a name dropper. Um, yeah. Credit to the VRC, Kylie, Neil, everyone getting, getting, um, that day on yesterday. It was, as you said, Troy, I, I, I think it was an amazing And 97,112. The only problem was I got sunburned when I, I was in race one and race 10. I was in race one and race 10 and I spent a lot of time on that lawn in between, um, keeping hydrated and, uh, I've just forgot the sentence. And it's a nice
Speaker 4probably, that's your only issue. You're going okay.
Speaker 2Um, it's been a good week for racing. Like the, the, from the call of the card, which is, I think it's How good was the call of the card? The call of the card was sensational and we might talk about the call of the card straight after this break. And we've got to touch on a few other issues there out of the Melbourne Cup as well. So I'll take a break. It's 70 minutes past eight. This is the Wednesday agenda. Plenty of text messages coming through on the Garrods Horse and Hound text line 0 4 double 9 7 3 6 7 3 6 And don't forget the CFL stakes. It's not far away on November 14 Um, 10 thrilling races at Sportsbet. Sandown, get your tickets just $15 at TicketTech Time for a break. We'll come back and we'll continue on our chat about Melbourne Cup Day. Yesterday with the Wednesday agenda team
Speaker 1Join the conversation. Text us on 0 4 double 9 7 3 6 7 3 6 live across Australia. This is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall
Speaker 2Welcome back to Giddy Up Gareth Hall with you Troy Causton's and Calvin McEvoy for the Wednesday agenda So much to talk about and John O'Neill and Wayne Hawks will be a means test that you do not want to miss. They're coming on. They're nine o'clock straight after you We're going to put you all together but we couldn't fit you all in the same room. First of all with the egos Um, and then obviously there's not enough cameras Maybe, maybe Wayne
Speaker 3and Troy could share a chair. Yes He could sit on my lap. That'll work Oh boy. Excuse me Yes.
Speaker 2So where were we at? I was going to have a chat about the We were talking about the Melbourne Cup. No, no, it's just Yeah, the Melbourne Cup. It's been a great The call of the card. It's been a great week for racing in this state. The call of the card. In this world when sometimes people get a little nervous or you know, not ashamed. I don't know what the right word is but when you talk about the punt you know, it's like society is it? Should you be talking about it? Shouldn't you be talking about it? But racing is made like racing doesn't survive without the punt and on Monday. Should be applauded. Yeah, on Monday afternoon we should celebrate the punt. It's a lot of people get a lot of enjoyment out of it.
Speaker 4Australian right and in fairness, it's become a lot more prevalent because everybody's punting on sports and everything like that which we never used to but we've been punting on racing forever. Racing doesn't exist without punters and without the punt and I think it's Australia's right to sit down on a Saturday and have a bet.
Speaker 2And you tell me what that like I could have watched that racing.com coverage all day there. I was lucky enough to be at the call of the card. There was 250 people that wanted tickets that couldn't get tickets.
Speaker 3Yeah, more I thought. 300, I thought.
Speaker 2And the theater. There's no How good is it? The theatre's unbelievable And well done to the Majority of the bookmakers On the stage That took the bets Here we go Robbie just Who wasn't taking the bets? No Robbie Waterhouse You know what Robbie I've got a different view Do you know why I think People get stuck Into Robbie Waterhouse Like what are you doing there Robbie You're not taking a bet But I What I think He adds to the theatre Of it That's exactly What I was going to say Good on you And you know what Robbie's a pretty wealthy man
Speaker 4He holds his line He's clever And he knows what he's doing 100% I really like the part Where he's And he's so Deadpan And he doesn't give a shit About the audience That are booing And everyone booed I sat next to him I was right in front of him And I booed him as well Yeah yeah That's good And And there was a couple
Speaker 2Of big bets That came off And there was some Big bets that didn't Like JP wanted to have A million dollars Well he did have a million dollars In Hopewell Rock I'm thinking It's the biggest danger To his run As you pointed out He just didn't settle
Speaker 3Yeah I think I had I think I backed nearly Every horse in the race Except for the winner Myself yes Hey I think we missed Talking about Ethan Brown before Yeah I wanted to go back To Ethan Brown And it's been Widely spoken about That he had that Terrible fall And he sort of Lost love with the game A little bit And was taking A bit of time away And he's come back And he is Some rider isn't he But the other point That's been missed Is he was on Zaran All the way through It's a little bit like The Mark Zara story When he had gold trip And without a fight And had to make the decision And he made the call Got off gold trip And won the cup on Without a fight Well this is similar He could have easily I mean he's loyal to Aussie He's loyal to both But he made the right call Didn't he Imagine he'd Stuck solid to Zaran Well Zaran run second
Speaker 2And he was mighty In defeat as well And that's another Great training performance By Marta Put the blinkers on him After he finished Midfield in a Caulfield cup But yeah And went on to Aussie as well Like he could have held Ethan to that ride He could have
Speaker 3And Aussies I mean Aussies This shows they're Buying the right horses Aussies ran second In the Cox play The Caulfield cup And the Melbourne cup Which I know He probably wouldn't enjoy But shows they're Buying the right horses Yeah Yeah and Ethan Brown
Speaker 2Like you've got to Give him credit as well I've talked about him On a few occasions This morning On different SEN networks But he was brave enough To put up his hand And say okay I'm not doing well At the moment I'm going to have a break And then sort myself out Regroup After that fall He wasn't right mentally And now he's come back And he's one of the best riders Not just in this country But in the world And I think he proved that With his short stint There in Hong Kong And a ripping bloke
Speaker 4Yeah I was about to say He's got one of the greatest Attitudes in the jockey room That you will come across And like You could not be happier For Ethan Than you were yesterday
Speaker 2So he's going to join us At quarter to nine On the Wednesday agenda So we can all have a chat to him So looking forward to that And well under Kylie Rogers You just pointed out And the flesh And the Flemington team They've been superb all week They get a lot right And I thought that day Yesterday was unbelievable
Speaker 4Yeah I hope we I hope we get a good day Saturday I think the rain is due But if we If we could get Like Oaks Day is going to be nice It's going to be really good But Geez I'd love to see us get A day like yesterday On Saturday Just to really cap it off No no no
Speaker 3You got too sunburned yesterday
Speaker 4Bugger the sunburn You'll be out at Fisher With your hands up in the air
Speaker 2I reckon And there's a few people That I've got Texting me Messages from And obviously it's the talk There on social media About Channel 7 The Channel 9 situation Channel 7 We're covering the big dance And Channel 9 We're covering the Melbourne Cup And because Channel 7 Covers the racing All year long The people thought That the Melbourne Cup Was on Channel 7 I still can't work that out We need to get it right
Speaker 4Yeah We need to get that right And the one thing
Speaker 2I don't know what the ratings were But It is what it is If I know that you want to get that right But if they want to pay more money Channel 9 Yeah yeah Then why wouldn't you take that
Speaker 4Deal I'll tell you what I didn't like I don't like the angle change During the race And then You get the jockey shot During the race I like that As a bonus Afterwards But watching a race You want to watch a race So you can see Where your horse is at What your horse is doing That they They go through like Six or seven different shots It's really confusing And I think It'd be very interesting You know Maybe it is for that person That Hasn't watched racing before So they get to see it From every different angle But when you're watching a race And you're When you need to see Where your horse is Stick to what we know And stick to what we can see It doesn't help that there's been
Speaker 3Tearaway leaders In the last two Melbourne Cups It finds it It makes it hard Difficult for the cameraman Yeah very Hey can I tell a story about Harry Coffey Really quickly Yes He won't mind me telling this So obviously everyone knows Harry Coffey Broke his collarbone Had surgery Anyway he rang me A couple of days ago I checked on him And he said You wouldn't believe what's happened He said Sunday morning I'm laying in the hospital bed Waiting to talk to the surgeon And He comes in and says Yep we're going to do the surgery Wednesday at lunchtime So Harry's all down And down in the dumps Saying right Melbourne Cup's gone So he wanders down To the cafeteria At the hospital And he goes I'm going to have a big ham and cheese Toasty Coffee and a muffin You know he's The horse got 51 And he's not having surgery Everyone knows You're not allowed to eat Before surgery With the anaesthetic He didn't have his wallet Because the wallet Was still at the race course He ordered his food And went to pay On his Apple Pay And it was declined So he was a bit down In the dumps He's thinking Shit I'm going to miss The Melbourne Cup And I'm broke And he wanders back Hungry He wanders back up To his Hasn't eaten for a week and a half He wanders back up To the hospital bed And he's just laying there A bit down in the dumps Gets a phone call 15 minutes later From the surgeon He said Have you eaten yet He said no He said we're doing The surgery at lunchtime And you'll be right on Tuesday Had his Apple Pay worked He would have eaten And wouldn't have been able To have the surgery He would have missed the cup Wow That would have been He would have been overweight That would have been Yeah and he would have been Overweight But credit to Harry I know he ran sixth It was still a great run And for him to do What he did And just the mental drain Of the last three days Good on him
Speaker 2Yeah And he's one of my Favourite human beings Harry Coffey Yeah
Speaker 4Hard not to be Yeah And to
Speaker 2Like I remember Texting him on Saturday night Saying You'll be right mate Your day will come Thinking that he wouldn't Be riding after he broke His collarbone Yeah I did actually Did you No
Speaker 3Nah I didn't Obviously Definitely Don't lie
Speaker 2But as I said yesterday Harry Coffey Throughout his life Has done Made the Impossible possible And he's such a Resilient young man And he was the story Like I was People were Talking about The Harry Coffey story How's he bloody done this I just did a Sydney radio With Brandy And Jimmy Smith They couldn't believe That a jockey With a broken collarbone That had a plate With no paint Killers turned up To ride on On cup day
Speaker 3Yeah He told me Riding in the Melbourne Cup Is enough of a painkiller Yeah The adrenaline 100% He gave the horse A great ride didn't he He did And she finished off well Into sixth Yeah
Speaker 229 minutes past eight We're going to have a chat About what happened there With Asterix He was scratched of course On race day morning After he was found To have treatment On race day So we'll discuss All of that With Calvin McAvoy And also of course Troy Cawson's here On the Wednesday agenda Yeah Join the conversation

Speaker 4No It's not like He wasn't going 11s He was going 12s and 13s So he's A pacemaker He goes 11s And goes flat out He would have been 50 lengths in front
Speaker 2Under those circumstances That's why I gave Benny Allen two votes Where like That was the That was the way To ride that horse He sometimes He gets keen If he was dragged back And they're going Those sectionals That he's not a happy horse
Speaker 3Yeah I mean It would have been interesting To have seen a race Where the second horse Had stayed in contact With the field Of being going A nice even clip I mean I don't think It would have changed the winner The winner would have won anyway He was back Did a mighty job But is it a pacemaker No maybe not
Speaker 2Should we have pacemakers It's not our style We've never done it We don't have enough
Speaker 4Standing races And it's against the rules No No We don't need them
Speaker 2Well it's not against the rules In other parts of the world
Speaker 4No but it is here
Speaker 3Yeah I don't have a view on it
Speaker 2Dominant win by point of law Great result for Ethan Brown Who had fought back From a near fatal race fall Congratulations to Kira Marr and also to John O'Neill who invest a lot of money into racing and deserves the success but i think it's time for him to retire his caramel colored suit and tie from the 60s love the show that's from mick firstly congrats to point of law on the connections question for the panel point of law lead at all costs at geelong but went back in the cup where was the change of tactics that's from steve from ranwick well they didn't like he led in the geelong cup different ball game in a melbourne car didn't it yeah and literally and
Speaker 4that was the first start for kieran as well so they were still learning about the horse and yeah no i disagree with i've got
Speaker 3it i mean i've got a view on change of tactics i think which we are
Speaker 4talking about soon as well oh yeah
Speaker 3yeah i've got a big view on unexposed horses and like that horse how is it a change of tactics as you said it's second start in australia up to two miles for the first time yeah just get rid of change of tactics i agree it's just pointless yeah because
Speaker 2you know why it takes the if you've got a team that want to excel at getting their preparation right and have the advantage over your opposition spot on and you want to get your tactics and and keep them as surprise from your opposition which can be the difference between you winning and losing and
Speaker 3people say the punters should know but football sports imagine f1 yeah spot on
Speaker 2i like it's a pride of jenny comes out and is hooked out back to last i think then questions are asked but that's different but yeah um 35 minutes past day what about the situation with asterix um 9 20 yesterday was taken out on steward's order because he was treated on race day now it was just a my understanding was just an honest mistake from one of chris wallace staff member and they felt terrible and you've got to feel for that staff member because they probably treat that horse the same way each and every day and what it was i think it's i got you guys at the train and so it got described to me as like a dp
Speaker 4it's liniment yeah liniment it's a a product i think it's a product called penetrating that they use exactly which is just liniment that um uh gets rubbed on the horse and then it's just a product that they use on their shins and this young girl does it all the time the security guard was there and watching and the
Speaker 2young girl why did the security guy go
Speaker 4what are you doing no the security guard is not there to police what happened they write it down he wrote it down and then reported that to the stewards which is why the security guards are there so it's not the security guard's job to stop anything and he didn't know what was going on okay and in fairness to the she was absolutely gutted she was devastated so you know everyone can sit back and and turf um stuff and in fairness to the she was absolutely gutted she was devastated so you know everyone can sit back and and turf um stones and everything like that but there's a young girl that i can tell you is feeling very very bad at the moment yeah and
Speaker 3i mean it just shows it how how much of an honest mistake it was that you literally have a in these big races you have a security guard there sitting down watching that box and is that every group one race not every group one race the majors it's it's a little bit inconsistent with i mean it's a bit inconsistent with which races they do use i mean they didn't have them for the cool more on saturday no they didn't have the for the derby probably years we have probably has
Speaker 4something to do with prize money we could get clarification it would be interesting
Speaker 2to know it should be on every b like the security guard should be with um every horse ahead of every i disagree with it no i disagree with it so every big group
Speaker 4one over what a million dollars every group
Speaker 2one every group one like harness racing in new south wales they put the horses in the retention barn wouldn't
Speaker 3that make you feel better if there was a security guard watching
Speaker 4now i've got great confidence in our integrity team and i know you know we had horses um walking out going to the races on saturday and they the the cat team came in to check our runners that we're in later in the day i've got extreme confidence in our integrity i think that's the best integrity department in possibly the world and they're doing a fantastic job and i don't think that we need security think about the cost that that that's going to come back um and for what you know i i disagree i think the
Speaker 2cost with the prize money you got you can put some money into that that's
Speaker 4fine it's fine with the 10 million dollar melbourne cup are we doing it for a 750 000 you know everyone it's an interesting debate um
Speaker 2so yeah it was an honest mistake obviously it's embarrassing for chris waller um to have a horse scratched on on race day as someone as professional as
Speaker 4chris i can tell you he he would be absolutely horrified yeah um but that's it even goes back to more that it was just a stupid mistake yeah by a young girl and you feel for that young girl
Speaker 2yeah um but it shouldn't have happened and um you feel for the owners as well would have been really just explain that phone call that chris has to make to those
Speaker 3owners oh yeah it'd be it would be devastating i mean for any owner to get a runner in the melbourne cup is is a lifetime dream so um yeah terrible and i'm at the end of the
Speaker 4day it it's your staff member but it's your responsibility so chris chris will be wearing that responsibility and it would have been a really really tough for your phone calls when you've got a team that big and
Speaker 2you guys have got big teams as well like you do need to put a lot of trust into your staff and they're not always going to get it right um look
Speaker 3human regardless yeah
Speaker 2like you can't you can't be in control of them 24 hours no you can't
Speaker 3but and human error is a real thing and that is you know it is a thing that stresses trainers out you know that something could just be an honest mistake and happen and um it can be the difference between you know your business and having a run in the in the group one but i think that's why you've got to just you know go to all the the um levels of signs up on horse you know runners have got a sign in their box running today running tomorrow all those little things
Speaker 2it just proves how many horses would get treated on race day without people making honest mistakes like that because if the security guard's not there then
Speaker 4the thing with that the thing with the penetrating is that it is swappable so yeah um if if the horse had a one and returned a positive swab that that's even worse so there's there's
Speaker 3all different the melbourne cup winner was given gastropel caulfield cup morning when it was still in the field as an emergency remember that was a you're gonna find for a thousand dollars to find for it and it's not sure but it's right yeah spot on you're exactly that was a mistake a human error mistake and had that horse have got to run the caulfield cup it would have been scratched what
Speaker 2happens there so you pay 80 000 to get in the melbourne cup you scratched on race day morning by the order of the stewards you don't get that money back to you i wouldn't have thought i i don't know i'm not sure i don't think you should get some
Speaker 3clarity from someone yeah i'm not sure that's
Speaker 280 000 down the drain and then chris gets another 50 000 on top of that yeah
Speaker 3yeah i mean i wonder whether yeah i don't know i don't know how that works a couple of free months is wanting just
Speaker 2pointing out for the asterisk owners for tracking um 40 minutes past eight we're gonna have a chat about the nick ryan situation there what happened on saturday i want to hear from the president of the trainers association and we'll talk about that issue next year on
Speaker 1giddy up join the conversation text us on 049736736 live across australia this is giddy up with gareth hall back to
Speaker 2giddy up ethan brown the champion jockey the melbourne cup winning hoop will be joining us shortly on the wednesday agenda wayne hawks is walking in the studio producing my show as well um he'll drop a little later on he can do everything the monday means test the big news saturday morning on derby day was the scratching of nick ryan's two horses doubtland and also on clay on clay out of the wakeful doubtland out of the coolmore um rv stewards and their integrity team raided his stables basically went to his car in the glove box he had two syringes with epo in it basically he had the inquiry on monday he didn't attend the inquiry his license has been suspended which is understandable and his inquiry will be in 26 days now 27 days he faces serious charges nick ryan he didn't put a plea in um and yeah it was a dark day for the sport when you hear the word epo on derby
Speaker 4day yeah a dark day but um it was a dark day for the sport when you hear the word epo on derby day yep a dark day but um and yeah it was a dark day for the sport when you hear the word epo on derby day yep a dark day but But, and I've been asked the whole weekend. Firstly, how is Nick? Is he okay? I've reached out. State of mind. Yeah. And I haven't heard from him, to be honest. And did we need to do this on Derby morning? Yes, you did.
Speaker 2Because it's like.
Speaker 4I'm agreeing with you, don't worry.
Speaker 2Yeah. From an integrity department, from an integrity perspective, you need your integrity team. If they've got information, they've got to act. It's key. It's on cup day, Derby day, um, in the middle part of June, because integrity is paramount for the, the, the survival of this sport. And in a way it could be a day that it's a dark day, but it could be a day where you go, okay, then we're confident in our integrity department, Racing Victoria, that they will catch the people doing the wrong thing.
Speaker 4And that's exactly how I feel. It's, I take a positive out of a negative. If you, if we, trainers work so bloody hard. And we all get up and we want to go to the races, knowing that we're racing on a level playing field. Yes. Chris Waller and Kiramar might have 300 more horses than all of us. That's fine. I don't care as long as they're not cheating. And if we are racing, I want to make sure that we're racing on a level playing field. And that's what our integrity department are doing. Um, and I think it, it gives us great confidence as trainers. We've spoken about it at length in the trainer's heart and good, you know? We don't need cheats in our game and let's deal with them, deal with them quickly and move on and get rid of them. Obviously, how do you approach when you see Nick Ryan? When I see him, I will literally, and we're friends with Nick Ryan, the three trainers that are sitting. in here we all get on with him very well he's a good guy um clearly he you know he's done the wrong bloody thing so you know am i gonna be mates with him no i'm not because i don't want to be mates with cheats and i don't want to be
Speaker 3associated with that so no i'm not no and i think um great well said troy about all of that but um i know there was a few of the uh obviously he's got he
Speaker 2hasn't like this is a this is alleged at the moment obviously they found what they found in the car and then he hasn't but you know it doesn't yeah well you
Speaker 4when you don't turn up to the inquiry if you if you're not guilty you turn up and you plead your case and um you know you go all out when you don't turn up and you just send your barrister how long should he get life
Speaker 2five years ten years i think the penalty no i think the penalties you need to be strong with this hundred percent put a line in i think it's going to
Speaker 4be minimum five you know you'd be happy with ten yeah i don't think he'll come back
Speaker 3no and i think you know as troy said there was a few of the executive team at the vrc that were really you know disappointed that this happened on their big day and derby day but i said to them like this is a great thing for the industry and not only the participants and the trainers that are going to gain confidence out of um people doing the wrong thing getting caught but even the the perception of the industry we do need yeah it needs the cheats need to be caught and um racing victoria stewards have have obviously been you know i don't know if they've been watching him for a while or i don't know yeah because they swoop quickly
Speaker 4it'd be fascinating to know but yeah fantastic intelligence and and and the swiftness that they've come through with this and i i spoke to several people i've never had um i've been in the game for 35 years nobody's ever uh looked in my car for anything which so they they've clearly i didn't even
Speaker 2know you were allowed to do that yeah if you if you're
Speaker 4licensed they can go into your house and you sign when you sign up for a license your your open book they can do anything they want
Speaker 2and what what happens now is that when you've got your integrity team or your unit doing what they did there on derby day and then there might be people that aren't doing they're not like that that they are doing the wrong thing at the moment and it is racing and whenever there is money involved um with any sport yeah in any sport um that there there is people testing the boundaries and stepping over the line but what that does now when you've got an integrity team doing what they're doing maybe their testing procedures have improved it puts those trainers that are oh well hang on a second i might need to stop what i'm doing i'll
Speaker 4give you an example gareth um so that the the racing victoria stewards do a lot of out of competition testing yeah um and it would have been about four months ago they came in on a sunday morning and on sunday mornings were very short staffed and i'm and i was kind of like oh jesus this is bloody it's tough we haven't got enough staff on um and i'm like oh my god i'm not going to be able to do this um and i'm like oh you know what's going on here can we do this on a monday when i've got full stuff and then i sat back about it and thought about it on the weekend they do that because that's probably when that stuff is happening and that's when they pick it up so you know what come in whenever you like do do it because what you're doing yeah you're doing it well and it's working so just keep doing
Speaker 3and at the end of the day cheating is a choice you choose to cheat you don't deserve to be in this great game get rid of them all yeah
Speaker 2we'll take a break ethan brown will be joining us next winning jockey join the conversation text
Speaker 1us on 0 4 9 7 3 6 7 3 6 live across australia this is giddy up with gareth hall royal supremacy
Speaker 5for benny allen trying to steal the cup comes around the corner at the 400 meters still 12 in front of so you are kisly are juja kibo down the outside and then came out of seoul of spain royal supremacy it's a long straight starting to get tired of the 250 juja kibo's coming at point of law over on the far side royal supremacy stop it point of law's got it 100 meters to go point of law comes away for ethan brown it starts six a magnificent performance it was one hell of a
Speaker 2ride one hell of a performance as maddie hill pointed out with point of law winning the lexus melbourne cup he's jockey ethan brown and he's going to win the lexus melbourne cup i think ethan was just relieved that johnny didn't tongue kiss him um after winning the melbourne cup after what he did in july and he
Speaker 3joins us now this this um yeah it's not it's very dirty yeah
Speaker 2well it's worth over a million dollars isn't it unbelievable yeah hey ethan probably had a hard night ethan congratulations welcome to giddy up on the wednesday agenda yeah cheers go um has it sunk in yet mate
Speaker 6god not really i get glimpses of it sinking in when i have a look at the cup or um see the replay but yeah i really gotta pinch myself um it's something that we all strive for uh every participant in racing we all want to win the melbourne cup and yeah to be able to do it at a young age on on such a good horse for kira ma it's just uh it's so
Speaker 3surreal morning ethan it's calvin here congratulations yesterday mate what um at what did you think that you uh you were on the winner
Speaker 6i reckon about the 350 i look i haven't watched the replay properly yet but um when he got that clear air the feel he give me when he let down he let down like a sprinter his sectionals would back that up but yeah it was at that stage i did look up and on royal supremacy was yeah it was a bit far in front for my liking but um obviously he spent a fair bit of energy he was on tied legs late and yeah the feel he gave me when he was out i thought she's just going to take a good one to beat this did he pull he was awkward um they went the second half of the field went quite slow so he did get on the chewy a bit i would have liked for him to relax a bit more but um his class took him a long way um
Speaker 2and once you saw that that clear galloping room in the straight um as you point out he's spreading like a sprinter that it was the it's the quickest it was the quickest horse to complete the the final furlong for the day which is remarkable at the end of two miles there
Speaker 6ethan yeah it's that's unheard of i think yeah it's uh it just sums up that horse's abilities he is something special and and i thought if he's going to get beat it'll be experience you know it's only six start in a race he's traveled from overseas and you know he's a bit free free at geelong but i've got to know the horse a lot from that day and even going out to werribee we got to know each other quite well i think that went a long way um but just the progression he's taken like you've seen at geelong he wanted to lay in really bad and he he wanted to take off and and race um gay wardhouse's horse throughout um but yeah he's just he's been prepared terrifically and um just to see him do that i thought he was capable of doing that but to see him do it was even better
Speaker 4and then yeah sorry troy on a uh on a lighter note ethan how many text messages are sitting
Speaker 6there waiting to be replied to 223 and tell
Speaker 4me who was the who was the first person you called when you got to your
Speaker 6phone he was the first person i think i called my old man yeah that's great yeah straight in the old man and the
Speaker 2genius of kirimar obviously you work with him and he's got a lot of experience and he's got a lot of experience and he's got a lot of experience and he's got a lot of experience and he's got a lot of experience and he's got a lot this horse a lot there at
Speaker 6werribee yeah he's kieran yeah he's uh he's a genius right um that horse it's well documented he he took off four laps one morning and he ran home in 24 at the end of the four laps and went home ate up that night like nothing happened and i think kieran learned a lot about that horse after that maneuver he pulled and uh he's just really kept up with it the work up to him like he's he gallops in nearly every day i mean sunday morning he he went seven home three monday morning seven home three and yesterday morning i think he'd done some evens with him um so he's a horse you need to keep the work up to otherwise he might race like he did at so long but um so he's a freak yeah yeah but just just to work a horse like that and and to understand a horse so quickly just shows the genius of kirimar i mean how many
Speaker 2interviews have you done
Speaker 6i've been smashed for about an hour and a half yeah you're loving it is this the most important
Speaker 2one though yeah yeah yeah this is yeah we appreciate that jesus johnny johnny um we've got about 50 seconds before we have to go to a break but well done you must be proud of your
Speaker 7boy ethan brown yeah no loving mate as you know and hey bud um i'll see you at 12 30 or one o'clock i've got no uh i've got no voice my friend but uh i'm i'm looking forward to catching up hopefully did you come and your mom as well did you enjoy that kiss
Speaker 2of the geelong cup ethan let's be honest sling it jealous
Speaker 6i was i was waiting for it it didn't come i might get it at lamar yes yes he'll get it
Speaker 2hey ethan we're so happy for you mate your story's bloody inspiring mate and um you should be so proud and now you're a melbourne cup winning champ
Speaker 6so well done yeah no unreal unreal no thank you go on your brother there's ethan brown we'll take a break
Speaker 2we'll wrap up the wednesday agenda after that Join the conversation.
Speaker 1Text us on 0499 736 736 Live across Australia This is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall
Speaker 2Welcome back to Giddy Up The Wednesday Agenda We'll go through some text messages The means test not far away Looking forward to that Johnny O'Neill's got no voice They tell me Well he's just told us He's made a comeback to drinking Hasn't drank for 20 years
Speaker 3Good on him 80 people at the Flower Drum Gee 80 people at the Flower Drum
Speaker 2So good luck with paying that bill There goes the prize money Paying that off for 40 years Hey Gareth No one beats Melbourne Cup week No matter what Sydney does With the pop-up races The VRC and Kylie Rogers take a bow Now that Robbie Williams Has set the benchmark It's going to be interesting Who entertains us next year
Speaker 4I said that to Luke Kinnaburra I was standing there Watching Robbie next to him I said what are you going to do Next year to top this You just cannot
Speaker 2Can we please make the horses That come from overseas Race in Australia Before they run in Melbourne Mark Hunter was correct When he said it's a different type Of 32-year-olds 200 metres race in Australia Every year I put a line Through horses That do not run in a race Before the Cup And it's proven Your thoughts on that Calvin
Speaker 3Yeah I mean It's interesting They might have to get here A little bit early It comes down to The veterinary protocols Doesn't it Because I think if they run They then have to have another CT Or are they not allowed To run first There is a rule We should get some No no no
Speaker 2They're going to have it again Because what happened to The No no The Derby winner Evaded O'Brien That ran in the Caulfield Cup Johannes Vermeer Correct No no no Augustus Roden No no no no no I was He ran second to very elegant In the Caulfield Cup Keep going I can't remember Anyway It'll come to me So that's the reason Alright Cal and Troy That's two horses now That have worked themselves And bolted Worked themselves And bolted in The next start Via Sestina And Point of Law I think Point of Law Did that before the Geelong Cup Time to get the jocks off And let them run four laps Yeah maybe we're all
Speaker 3Maybe we're all too soft on them Yes I think that's what we're learning Point of Law
Speaker 2Point of Law had no business Winning from where he was Given the lack of pace That horse is something special Hi G Ethan Brown does not get Enough recognition For the quality of jockey He is Andrew from the Gold Coast
Speaker 4Everybody in the game Recognises that Ethan Brown Is one of the best One of the best
Speaker 2Good morning gents Full disclosure I'm a part owner of Pinhole Do they have emergencies In other races Like the Arc de Triomphe The Kentucky Derby And the Japan Cup etc Can you please explain to me Why the tab can't accommodate Emergencies in the Cup It was a brutal feeling When Asterix was scratched Yesterday That's from JP How you feel for the Defiantly owners as well Because of the no emergencies That they don't get to take Their place in the Melbourne Cup
Speaker 4It is tough It's very tough And it's something That we need to address And someone asked me We've been addressing it For ten years I know but Have we got an answer
Speaker 2Well I think When I had a chat To Gil McLaughlin I think they're confident That we can change it next year But it's something that Cost a lot of money For the technology To implement it So obviously the tab Wants help from Racing Victoria But someone needs to pay for it
Speaker 4And Asterix Asterix coming out yesterday Would not have involved An emergency getting around Because it was after scratching
Speaker 2Did I hear that Now that Anthony Van Dyke Was the horse That's it yeah
Speaker 3But I think there's going to be Changes to the emergencies Over the next year or two With the That's what Gareth just said Yeah sorry I wasn't listening
Speaker 2Morning would Like to hear Calvin and Troy's Opinion on Chris Waller Blaming a young strapper I don't know if he blamed A young strapper For race day treatment Does that not fall on the foreman Why is the product On the race course My guess It's not the first time It's been used on race day
Speaker 4No that That's a That's a silly statement Because I know that Lizzie was absolutely Beside herself as well And Chris Waller Wouldn't have blamed Well it was her She shouldn't have Chris did not blame The young girl It was purely a mistake And anybody that thinks Other than that Is kidding themselves
Speaker 2Do you think Royal Supremacy Would have lost the cup On Stewart's protest If he had won Ben Allen's overuse Of the whip No that doesn't happen anymore Willer from Ballarat How can a horse Be 15 lengths in front And yet they are Over five seconds Outside the race record In the cup Because it was It was embarrassing really It was farcical Yeah this is It was embarrassing I'm actually surprised
Speaker 3There wasn't a mid-race move Like they were going Steady last year And Land Legend took off But yeah It was interesting Royal Supremacy Seems to find races Where people leave them alone
Speaker 2A lot of people say He should have never Been in the race What were they doing Second up Anyway Yeah and he got
Speaker 3Beat 30 lengths Yeah that's not fair Really on that horse It was a very good first up
Speaker 2Morning G Congrats on JJ's Performance in the cup Yesterday plus good to see Pikey in the last Also works at Flemington Not only at Ascot Chalks from Perth Did you see that Protest in the big dance No I haven't No I haven't seen it either We'll talk to Wayne Hawks About that Any chance you can have The Irish expert From the O'Brien stable Back on and ask him About Point of Law He potted that horse twice Once before the Geelong It's a game of opinions And before the Melbourne Cup He's been very good Kevin Blake It is about opinions I think this carnival Has been better off For having Kevin Blake here
Speaker 3Gareth I've just had A text message Would it be better To run 20 and plus 4 Emergencies in the Melbourne Cup
Speaker 4Nah let's have
Speaker 324 plus 4 24 plus 4
Speaker 2And Dave Stanley My counterpart in Sydney He brought up something Interesting that people Talked about yesterday Why not have the Melbourne Cup Late Is there any reason Why we have it at 3 o'clock
Speaker 4Tradition Yeah it is tradition And we've always done it then I actually agree with that Because I think we'd get More views as well Because it's a Public holiday in Victoria But it's not in the rest of Australia The country
Speaker 3And the Caulfield Cup Is 5.15 Which leads into the news Is that right And the Cox Plate I think they Time them so that The news National news Well that would probably
Speaker 4Make a little bit of sense Because they do get a lot Of publicity out of it
Speaker 2Yeah I would be all for it
Speaker 4Changing it There is a reason And you probably need A Kylie or a Lee To get on here And explain it
Speaker 2Last one What are your thoughts On the MCC Country Series They need to fix The eligibility for it I've got a runner In the final tomorrow It doesn't seem right That Matt Lurie Clint McDonald And Dom Sutton Have runners too They are not Trainers slash owners The series is designed for I agree with that No I disagree Yeah it's under 15 Metro Yeah under 15
Speaker 4Metro winners They didn't have over that And they're eligible To run in it
Speaker 2But don't call it The Country Series then It's the Metropolitan Trainers that Well they're not
Speaker 4Metropolitan trainers Clinton McDonald Trains out of Cranbury
Speaker 2Yeah they said it's Metropolitan training And Dom trains out of Flemington I think it's like Still didn't have more Than 15 Like having like The Kosciuszko Like if you want A proper Country Series Do it properly Well let's look at it Alright then That's another That's another thing On your agenda Sorry about that Better than the agenda We've got for today
Speaker 3Any winners? Uh Sabrina Today Um today Um Kyneton Yeah Kyneton race One Number nine
Speaker 4Sabrina Troy? I'm going to Tip Verdot Who will run Oh very good
Speaker 3Tip that every week It must run every week Did you watch him On Saturday? I did The other horse
Speaker 4Magnus Magnus Bim was good Yeah he ran really well And my two year old Will run very good On Saturday as well
Speaker 2And the other thing is Bear Robertson just Texted her on the line After four o'clock Or three o'clock The kids can finish school And go and watch the race Yeah well we had They can't watch it in school We have talked about that
Speaker 4But I know I think there is a reason So you'd probably Oh I'll chase that up
Speaker 2With the team Um love you Jeez it's been Our best Wednesday agenda yet A lot of pressure On the means test now Um Wayne looks raved up No Wayne is coming off He's got the glasses On his head Show back to long run Thanks for that guys Got a new shirt on Yeah Does he sit on this side Or that side? Speaker 2Goodness mate Put the cup up So you can see Out on racing.com There you go Unbelievable The interesting thing
Speaker 7Is you're talking about that We pay for the horses We lease the cars So good So yeah The cars are for lease The houses are rented And So Yeah Explain the feeling Was this better Than the first time around Look I think Um This is a new group of owners Yeah A lot of these guys Have come together In the last few years Um So look It was an amazing night Amazing day Um Pretty emotional For Kerry Good It's been pretty well Documented Unfortunately His His daughter was Tragically murdered In the Westfield In the Westfield Bondi Situation A couple of years ago And it's been very tough For Kerry Rupert Lee's a great Mate of his And Rupert insisted He went in the horse And Um I caught up with With Kerry At Call of the Card And You know He was quite excited But he's You know I mean, as you would imagine, you'd never get over that night in any way to get and see a smile on his face. Trent Mason wrote
Speaker 2a great article on racing.com.
Speaker 7Yeah. Yeah, well, just to see the smile on his face, and his family were with him last night, and we had a bite to eat at the Flower Drum in the city, which was really nice. Look, it was just. Slowing it, everybody. Yeah, no, it was just. And thank you to the guys at the Flower Drum, too. They were unbelievable. They looked after us, so.
Speaker 8I bet you the bill was unbelievable, but you could afford it.
Speaker 7But when the bill came out, I ran. I went and hit in the toilet. But, no, look, it's really hard to explain to Gareth. Like, you had a share in James J. Braddock, and as you saw, he ran huge. He was enormous, but we ran first and second, so Zah ran, ran second, and so did Cronulla the Cup. I was lucky enough with Very Elegant and Incentivised to do it a few years ago, and, you know, I think, as I've always said, it doesn't really matter what size share you've got. Yeah, yeah. When you've got a great group of people and everybody recognises the people for who they are and their friends and stuff, just the joy. Joanne and I were down near the fence and just trying to take a quiet moment on our own when we were watching it, and it was just a wonderful ride. And when the horse burst through, Marmello did that a few years ago with Huey Bowman on, and I was screaming like a lunatic, so I shut my mouth this year because cross-counter came down the outside and beat him on the line. And so I was wondering whether anything was going to come, but he was just too good. It was great. How good is he, Wayne?
Speaker 8Well, you know what? I mean, it's three weeks ago, he was just another number. And today, he's definitely the hottest property in Australia. And, I mean, we're talking autumn globes. We're talking all these horses. I mean, what this horse has done, he's only had a handful of starts. He's had two runs in Australia and gone wop, wop. And, you know, I mean, you can't tell me that they're know the bottom of him because, to be honest, maybe they do. But the bottom line is how I would read as a horse trainer, not knowing, but as a horse trainer, you would have even got the bottom of this horse knowing him and you're just learning all about this horse. And every day, I'm sure, is a big, big learning curve from getting a horse off another trainer and, you know, acclimatising and all this stuff that goes into it. I mean, it's a, well, it's ridiculous, really. I mean, we weren't, who would have thought after the Geelong Cup we'd be sitting here today talking about this and having the Melbourne Cup in the room?
Speaker 2Was it easy? Like, when you got the phone call from Kira Marr and Will Bourne, did you have to think twice about getting involved in this horse?
Speaker 7No, look, not really. I mean, you know, when Will finds these horses, they do so much work and I know that I carry on and rah-rah about the data, but that's got a lot to do with it too. So he found the horse early doors. It was a horse that normally you wouldn't be able to buy and I've got no doubt that Kieran's mum had a lot to do with it. Yeah, Eileen, I think, yeah. And I know we talk about it. Absolutely no doubt.
Speaker 8Please tell the story for the people that don't know.
Speaker 7So Kieran's mum sent a letter to the King and the Queen prior to going over to Royal Ascot. And obviously Kieran's mum's in her late 80s, I would say. She's a great lady too. Beautiful lady. Great lady. And Kieran's dad was there yesterday too, so I was in the mounting yard with him for a bit. So Kieran has been going to Royal Ascot for a number of years. He's got some great relationships. And Will Bourne, you know, he works that environment really hard. So he travels. He travels a lot during the year, not just when everybody thinks you've got to go over and buy the horses at carnival time. He's there probably half a dozen times a year and spends two or three weeks getting around, looking at horses, travelling all the way through Europe. So they identified this horse. And as I said, I think it's a horse that normally you wouldn't be able to buy. And we were hoping to race the horse in partnership with the King. And that was the phone call that I got. Will rang and said, look, I think we found the right horse. The King will probably keep 50% of the horse. Can we ring a few of the boys? Will's got a lot of very loyal supporters. Yes. They go on a lot of horses. So sure enough, I said, well, look, we're in. I'll ring Mike Angy and Peter Cook and Jonathan Pierce. And then Mike will ring Nigel and Brendan and all the crew. And so there's some great supporters that we're going to get in the horse. Rupert, I rang straight away. And did you see all those jumps in? No, I didn't see all the jumps in, but I think they're great supporters of Will's. And Adrian's and Degger's, they're great supporters of Will's.
Speaker 2Huge, Madman, Degger's, Madman.
Speaker 7Crazy man, crazy man. I love him, but Madman. He's crazy. But anyway, so look, I don't think there was going to be an issue in getting the horse done. Stop, stop. You got to declare.
Speaker 8How much did he cost?
Speaker 7I think he was.
Speaker 8Don't you think you know? No, no, I'm not, to be honest, I'm not a hundred percent.
Speaker 7I mean, everyone's quoting four plus, but he wasn't anywhere near that. I'll assure you of that.
Speaker 8Did he have a three in front of it? No, I don't think he did. I think he was. How you going, folks, when you're buying a horse worth millions off the King and you can't remember what you paid for it? I just won the Melbourne Cup, mate. I don't really care, to be honest. So, but anyway.
Speaker 7Back to Eileen. Yeah, so look, I've got no doubt she sent the letter. The King and Queen accepted the catch up. Obviously, Kieran trains for the King anyway, but really special moment for her. And I think King Charles and Queen Camilla obviously built a bit of a relationship with Eileen. I think there's a couple of notes going back and forward, and so I'm sure that that's had a lot to do with it, because it gave the King a level of comfort that, you know, he wasn't just selling the horse for the sake of selling it. And he didn't stay in, though. No, he couldn't. He's not allowed to. I think for legal reasons, yeah, there was. Yeah, he's not allowed to. And I think, I was talking about it this morning, but I think what would have happened is they would have had to do sort of credit checks and personal checks on everybody if you were going to race for the King, and as soon as my name is in the ownership, I think that was probably an issue for all concerned. Can't race with undesirables, James. So, Neil, next. So, again, and look, I mean, everyone has a crack at me about it, but I do get on and talk about Kieran and Will a lot. Obviously, I've enjoyed some terrific success, but never seen guys work harder, try to change the way they do things, always look for different ways to come up with solutions, and as I said, I talk about the data a bit. He's got a big team of people that do that, and so I just, you know, Will probably doesn't get the recognition that he should for all of the work. He does here, and this is not like we go over and try to buy one or two horses. Will would seriously look at 150 horses a year and chuck all the data in, and then as we know, the safety of the Melbourne Cup again this year, fantastic. Most of the horses don't pass the scans. You know, we tried to buy, I think, Hawks, you and I spoke about it, you know, during the year, like there was five or six horses that we were really, really keen to buy and put offers in. And secured them. You told me there was four or six. Well, there you go. You said there was four or six that failed.
Speaker 2Yeah. And, you know, with Will, I think he was very emotional there yesterday because they, like he has to have, like he probably copped some criticism over the time because when you're buying these horses at that price, people automatically think, oh, you need success, but he's not in that game. He's there to try and buy the best possible horses that he can, and it's difficult to try and get these horses these days. So even to be able to get this deal done with the King was extraordinary in itself. And you're going to have losses along the way. He's not going to get every horse right, but it's the business that they're in. They've got to keep on buying these horses because that's part of Kieran's business model. A hundred percent.
Speaker 7And look, you know, we bought the third horse as well from over there, which was a huge run. Juju Cabot, yeah. It was a huge run. And again, a lot of similar owners are in that horse that are in Point of Loss. So look, it was just a wonderful day. Juju, it was great.
Speaker 820 minutes past nine, Wayne. You won with Very Elegant. You jumped the fence, literally jumped the fence during COVID, got in trouble for that. So this was so different. And, you know, you look at those times and I think John McNeil winning a Melbourne Cup in COVID. I think Dennis Pagan. I was there during COVID and I won a Caulfield Guineas with the best colt that went to stud worth the most amount of money. And I stood there with Willie Pike. I mean, I love Pikey. I really do. I really, really do. But he ain't the most fun bloke in the world. So when you literally stand there by yourself, but now to come back and have it yesterday in front of 100,000 people, it must have been, you know, off the top, Gareth asked you, was it different? But it had to be different yesterday
Speaker 7because you had everyone there. It was a lot different. And as you say, we came straight out of COVID. I think we won the Derby with Hitotsu the year that Very Elegant won the cup. We didn't even go Derby day because we're all unsure about. You know what it was going to be like because we have been locked up in COVID for such a long period of time. So we're on Aussie's rooftop at one of these nightclubs with a couple hundred people and we won the Derby. It was out of control. So we went cup day. As you say, the crowds were, I think a lot. Well, obviously they would have been a lot smaller, different emotional ride. And this horse being so close to Kieran and Will now and the other ownership group to to go to Geelong and see him win the World Cup. And I think it was a good thing that Mike Angy spoke really well in the post-match address. I got to lead the horse. The horse from WA.
Speaker 2Yeah. You know, I've got a story about Mike. Yep. And I, and I've got to know him a little bit, obviously with WA and he's got a slot in the quokka and. Fred Feoth on in this horse too? I don't. No, I don't know. I don't think so. And Mike owns one of the best ever bars in, in, um, Delkeek, just, um, in a good area in Perth called Stevens, I think. So. Go there when you're, um, in WA, but he doesn't tell his wife that he's in these horses.
Speaker 8Most blokes don't.
Speaker 2No, I can understand where he's coming from. Didn't you get in trouble, Mr. J.J. Braddock? Yeah, so
Speaker 7you can explain.
Speaker 2He told me the story.
Speaker 7There's no, she doesn't really like the racing market. Yes. Until 3.15. There's no horses. And whilst I'm on air, I'll say that he's probably in one or two with me. Yeah. How many? I wouldn't say one or two.
Speaker 2And he would have spent, he must have a separate bank account because he's spending probably hundreds of thousands of dollars. No, he wouldn't be doing that. He wouldn't be doing that.
Speaker 7But anyway, the great man. I called him and I actually said, how'd you go with Sandy? Did you let her know that you're in the horse? He said, I showed her what price it was and explained it was the Melbourne Cup and it was the favourite and she was actually quite happy for me. Oh, that is. So he's up and about with it. But he had to tell her because he was doing the barrier drawing.
Speaker 2He was going to be on TV. That is correct. That's why he's told her.
Speaker 8Yeah, he had to. Imagine how many owners are sitting there right now thinking you're not the only one, brother. I'm going to tell you the funny thing.
Speaker 7Peter Cook, who's a great friend of his as well. Yeah. And Cook, he's a great supporter of ours with the horses. He's in it as well. And his wife, Lucy, I think she now loves it, but she didn't like it originally, I don't think. And he had one or two, but it might have been 20 or 30 and then turned into 50. And she was certainly there front stage yesterday having a ball. Well, it was great. It was great. It's life changing. Yeah, and look, even Joanne. Even Joanne, my partner, she loves it. Jo supports me with the horses. I was lucky enough to lead the horse in with her yesterday. So that, for me, was a wonderful thing too.
Speaker 2It's not life changing financially for this group of owners, but it is life changing in a way that you've, like you can go and tell everyone for the rest of your life that you purchased a horse off the King and won a Melbourne Cup. I guess that's the life changing.
Speaker 7For me though, Hooks, you're going to say for me to actually, to lead the horse in with my missus, who's now starting to enjoy the races a little bit. Obviously, we just won a Melbourne Cup, but she's been a great supporter of me. Probably the best time I've ever had at the races, to be honest, you know, because I've never, I've never really done it before. In that instance, I've led horses in before, but it's always sort of been on my own. So it was really good to do it with her.
Speaker 8You're buying $3 million horses. Yes, it's not going to be life changing financially, but these people that have the big money aren't doing it for a monetary basis because most people are tipping in, are going to lose that money. So, you know, and I mean, I'll quote Tony Santic. Three Melbourne Cups, he said, I spent more before I won my first Melbourne Cup than getting the three checks together. So that was what I got going back to. We need these people that race lots of horses to win these big races.
Speaker 2We're going to take a break, 24 minutes past nine. I think we're going to chat to the champion trainer, Kieran Marr, hopefully. Sort of hit and miss whether we get him on the phone or not these days, Kieran. Sometimes he's there, sometimes he's not, but he is a busy man, Wayne.
Speaker 8And before we go to the break, I'm serious. If we don't have Fisherman's Friends sponsoring this segment next week, there's something going on.
Speaker 7So how much did you drink last night? I made a comeback, just a short comeback. Did you? A short comeback. I've been eight years off the drink, but I've just made a very, very short comeback. And what'd you have? Can't say, but anyway, it wasn't good. How are you feeling? No, look, I'm not too bad. I was home under the doona. I've got a heart. Mike Engie and the boys and Kieran and Will and all the crew at Kieran's were at the Osborne until, I know you've still never been there. No, I never have. You should never be. Well, you need to go. They were still there pretty late, I believe. I deserve it. I deserve it, Lisa. I deserve it, Lisa. Under the doona. And then your buddy rang me, Tommy Steinfurt. Yes, yes. And I went and did the Today Show thing with him at 7.40 this morning. Did he say giddy-ups very own? He did say that. And he said to pass on his best to you. Oh, okay. And I said to him that the only downside was that I didn't have the Robbie Williams outfit on. Yeah. And for any of you guys, Hawksy, I would love to see you in the red tracksuit with the red singlet.
Speaker 2Maybe next Monday.
Speaker 7Because that was something I've never seen before. The Robbie Williams outfit was extraordinary.
Speaker 8Unbelievable. I actually got there at quarter to three to watch the Melbourne Cup. And I went and pulled up at the back of the train station and walked in the back of the grandstand. And as I was walking in, he was walking out with his entourage. He could have ridden 56 in the Melbourne Cup. He's tiny, that bloke. But he's tiny. He looked to me like he was a big man, like size-wise, height-wise. He's five foot five. I'll tell you one thing.
Speaker 7He put on a show. And before the race was incredible, what he did, I thought.
Speaker 2Our own nose in Yes, Yes, Yes is going to be interesting. I reckon Robbie Williams already featuring on our Gareth Horsenhound text line prominently regarding the Yes, Yes, Yeses and Kylie Rogers. 26 minutes past nine. We'll take a break. We'll come back with the champion trainer, Kira Ma, next.
Speaker 1Live across Australia. This is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 2What a performance there by that galloper and trained to the minute by the champion trainer, Kira Ma, who created history once again. He's the first trainer to trifecta a Melbourne Cup. He had seven runners and six of them finished in the top ten. Kira Ma, congratulations, mate. Welcome to Giddy Up and the Means Test.
Speaker 9Cheers, Gareth. Yeah, it was a pretty special day.
Speaker 2Yeah, how are you feeling?
Speaker 9Fresh as paint.
Speaker 7I'm in a bit of trouble, mate, just quietly. I'm in a bit of trouble, my friend. Anyway, are you coming to Lomaro's at 12.30 or 1? Because I want to continue this on with you.
Speaker 9Well, one thing, when Gold Trip won the Cup, I got a really good piece of advice off Jamie Lovett. I think he was opening his 20th bottle of champagne for the week. And he said, mate, you know when you stop, it's over. Correct.
Speaker 7Let's keep going. Let's keep going. Let's keep going. We got Jimmy. Even Jimmy was there. Little Jimmy was there, yes. He's a champion.
Speaker 2Didn't you open the Emerald at 5 a.m. when you won the Melbourne Cup with Gold Trip?
Speaker 9Yeah, yeah, that was. Fortunately, I knocked on the door and unbelievably, Andy Lewis opened the door.
Speaker 2What time did you finish up last night, obviously? You're at the. And great supporters of the means test, the Osmond. Simon Lennox does a great job.
Speaker 9Yeah, yeah, it was great, actually. Mum was there pretty late, actually, with the rest of the family. Eileen, yeah. And a lot of the team. And we called through for a couple of duck rolls through the flower jump, caught up with Johnny there.
Speaker 2Yeah, and just on your mum, Eileen, and Johnny was mentioning this at the start, like, how important was she in getting this deal done to purchase the horse off the king?
Speaker 9Ah, you know, like, yeah, I'm sure she. She had plenty of choice words to say, I would imagine. And, yeah, you know, like, I'm sure that was a pivotal part of the whole thing. Yeah, and just fantastic to have mum and dad and some nephews and nieces there as well. My brother was there. Yeah, it was unbelievable.
Speaker 7I'll tell you what, the great thing is, with the conversion rate between the pound and the Aussie dollar, next year when we all go back to Ascot, at least there won't be any accommodation costs for your mum. She'll be staying at Buckingham Palace all the time. Yes, yes, yes.
Speaker 2Has the king rang you yet?
Speaker 9No, but I wouldn't expect that.
Speaker 8Wayne? Congratulations, mate. In all seriousness, to have seven runners in the race, which is a world record for the Melbourne Cup, let's be honest, to go out and to do what your horses did, where'd they run, the whole seven of them? One, two, three, five, six, ten. Yeah. That's nuts. It's amazing, really. Like, you couldn't have possibly have thought you could go and trifecta this, Kieran. As a kid growing up watching Buck, Cummings, Quinella in the race, you couldn't have surely have thought you had any chance of running one, two, three.
Speaker 9Well, yeah, like, when you think about it like that, it is pretty surreal. But I thought we had a good hand going in, and I just thought there was a couple of them like, you know, Zaram was a forgotten horse, Dujakivo was in career-best form, and point of law, I was just like, yeah, I was just enamoured with how well he'd come on from Geelong. But even still, like, a world-class race like that, to, yeah, you kick yourself to get three horses home, but even the other horses, like, Royal Supremacy was quite a Jenny-like, and he ran absolutely out of his skin to run fifth. Yeah, super proud for my whole team and all the Connections owners, you know, they've all had it. - Yeah, it's a huge day.
Speaker 8to play this, Ethan was on earlier this morning and we just got this grab to replay. I was gobsmacked about this.
Speaker 6That horse is well documented. He took off four laps one morning and he ran home in 24 at the end of the four laps and went home, ate up that night like nothing happened. And I think Kieran learned a lot about that horse after that manoeuvre he pulled and he's just really kept the work up to him. He gallops him nearly every day. Sunday morning he went 7.03, Monday morning 7.03 and yesterday morning I think he'd done some evens with him. So he's a horse you need to keep the work up to, otherwise he might race like he did at Geelong. So he's a freak. Yeah, but just to work a horse like that and to understand a horse so quickly just shows the genius of Kieran Barham. That's nuts Kieran.
Speaker 8Yeah, no, thank you very much, Wayne.
Speaker 9And Ethan just listening to that replay back, we did learn a lot, you know, and sometimes through sometimes through, you know, it wasn't ideal. You know, he's done two laps and then done another extra couple of laps. You do learn a lot. So we realised he had a big tank on him. And then just watching the way he was 13 weeks. queen runs when he went to Geelong but I did work him down a bit going into that because I thought he would be a bit fresh and well and um what I sort of worked out was you know a gallop to him was sort of like him you know and you know it could be a strong canter for for um a lot of other horses so um yeah um I suppose uh yeah he's just got a massive engine I think and and um and he's just a very good horse so they find work and and um things other you know those top line horses they find things easy
Speaker 7uh Kieran I just wanted to um just highlight I'm like you I've lost my voice um the way that you connect your staff I mean I talk a lot about the data and the and the facilities that you have and and the fact that you you challenge the norm with that and you know you've got big teams of people working behind the scenes on on customer service and and updating stuff through videos and it's it's just constant communication for the owners me being a sort of an older guy I'm I'm very much into the um the customer service stuff part of things but the thing that I love is is just the connection that you've got with all of your staff and when these horses are winning no matter whether they're winning provincial races city races or cups to see your more senior team the junior team I saw Erin yesterday from from Fingal who who clearly looks after St George I mean how do you how do you keep that rolling mate because the connection piece is so critical I think in into your success you know it's it's won by a village mate isn't it not not by
Speaker 9one person no exactly right and uh it's something I've focused on uh right from when we had a very much smaller team and and less locations um but it probably became more prevalent when I got bigger and and had multiple locations was uh the culture of the team uh is is uh everything or something we we place um a massive emphasis on and um you know blokes like um Jack Turnbull Joe um Nicky Ferg but you know blokes like Damien Lubick managers Sam Lafayette you know Sam Cav um you know and constantly working on that culture um and that's that so when people come into work you know they're upbeat they're they're passionate and uh I think that that shows on on race day because everyone gets so much out of it um and they're so driven and so passionate um so it's that culture you know like if someone comes in to work at you know it can be tough hours it can be cold and wet and rainy and uh as we all know you know you can get in there early um and uh you know that first connection with the horse if someone's in a bad mood um and you know or they're walking around on eggshells because the culture's shot in your stable it affects the horse and um yeah so um yeah but it's something we focus on a lot and uh it's it's it's like those lumber centers you know but I think that does count for a lot of how people are in the stable because it's such a staff orientated you know and they're and they're a living breathing animal animal
Speaker 2training the human not just the the horse um Kieran what do you do with point
Speaker 8of law now just pat him pat
Speaker 2him next are
Speaker 8we gonna rub salt in the room in salt into the wound and take him back to rural Ascot and show the king how it really works imagine that yeah guys he won't help you but anyway you might need it do you know what else is amazing thing an amazing thing Kieran now trains one of the probably the second best horse in the country that poor little Philly called tempted I mean fair I mean that's amazing that's why Kieran's lower that's amazing like she's a freak of a horse resource yeah how's she
Speaker 9going yeah like she is you know she's she's a she's a ripper and she's she had a look down down the straight the other day she had a big gawk around had a good look around yeah she's a ripper and she's she had a look down down the straight the other day she had a big gawk around had a good look around but um she's very fit she's obviously she's just done what she's done but uh yeah really looking forward to uh Saturday um I think she's she worked well um earlier in the week and um yeah I think
Speaker 2she'll run a big race do you know what would be fun Kieran on Champions Day with Fisher playing the if you start the cold against her it won't
Speaker 8happen yeah next episode yeah yeah yeah he's he's worth 35 and we're talking a million he ain't going anywhere listen the
Speaker 7other thing I just want to say Kieran was talking about how important the culture is and I will say that the culture that he's built not only with his staff has now spread like wildfire across all of the owners that he has yeah whether we're in the same horses or whether we're not first bike to come and get me in a headlock after we won the cup was Andy McAve like you know these are people that we're all starting to get to know through success in the stable and yeah I'm sure you would note that Kieran that like there's so many text messages flying around with people that you've introduced even though we're not in the same horses just congratulating everyone so I take my hat off to you mate it's
Speaker 9very good no no thank you very much it's um yeah I was I think I was saying it earlier on another um show that um it was sort of the culmination of of you know 15 years work you know like connections owners horses um uh you know and building your staff um yeah like it was just a unbelievable day and and uh and it certainly hasn't happened overnight
Speaker 8day day one when you started training horses how many horses did you start with
Speaker 9it was actually uh a lot of fun when I first started training I had two horses two
Speaker 8horses rode them both yourself I
Speaker 9assume yeah I rode one lead one and um sounds like you sounds
Speaker 7like Hawks even nightclub in
Speaker 9Adelaide and and uh uh I would just like put them on the float behind the old man's house and uh put them on the float go to the milk bar have a coffee read the paper I just stand on the float and um I'd get down the beach cruise around take about an hour to work them and um cruise back home go past the milk bar again have a cup of coffee and head back home it's an amazing story Chris Chris Chris
Speaker 8Wallace no different though no he started with nothing as well and uh you know these two guys have got empires
Speaker 9yeah yeah it was um and they were both good horses and uh I had no staff um and uh it was a lot of fun and how many
Speaker 2staff now do you have
Speaker 9we have about 220 yeah yeah
Speaker 7um hey Karen in those early days too um you know a great mentor of yours and you know just a wonderful person or a person that you looked up to Cole McKenna, who's passed away. How much influence did he have on your career in the early days, mate?
Speaker 9Well, I think he still has an influence just on the way he went about his life and business and people and culture and the way he built his empire, I suppose. You know, knowingly or unknowingly, you know, I've looked at that closely and he was very successful. So, yeah, I often think there would have been no prouder guy at Tony McKenna yesterday if he was still around.
Speaker 8Yeah, I agree. The other bloke, and Johnny has sat next to me for three years now and rah-rahed about this kid for so, so long, but Ethan Brown, he just keeps continuing to go to the next level. But also, from your point of view and your client's point of view, you've helped pushed him to get there, and we can do that with jockeys, but they're not all going to be successful. He is becoming a Mark Zara. He is becoming a big race jockey.
Speaker 9Well done. Yeah, like, I'm not one to really push my jockeys. They either sort of do it or they don't. So I think, you know, we obviously get on extremely well with similar demeanours, I think. And, yeah. And, but, you know, he, there would be, there wouldn't be a fit of jockey riding, like, he's chiselled, he's, you know, he puts the work in. And you're right, Wayne, he has, he just continues to grow in confidence. And as, I think I spoke about it yesterday, as we, as we all know, there's not a lot of difference between your Zara, J-Mac, Ethan Brown, you know, Nashville Willer, Tommy, you know, Damien Lane, there's, there's Trag Williams. There's not a lot of difference between them, but it's just that, that belief in themselves. And I suppose that's the same as any elite sportsman. And, and even the difference from when he went on, when he went to Hong Kong to coming back now, you know, you can just, that confidence just continues. To grow in the belief. And, and as that grows, you know, you just, you just, you start riding the wave, don't you?
Speaker 2Unbelievable story, mate. So happy for you. You're rewriting the history books and yeah, you should be super proud. Congratulations. Enjoy the Lamaros. There's a few questions. Were you backing rural supremacy up in the Queen Elizabeth? No. No. Well done. Bring on Saturday. You've got big chances. Tomorrow as well. There's people asking for tips. You probably haven't had a look at the form, but if I gave you a hundred dollars, what would you do with it tomorrow, Kieran?
Speaker 9Buy some fish from his friends first.
Speaker 2He's got a few today at Kighton.
Speaker 9Today I'd just take it to Lamaros and send it over the bar. Johnny O'Neill will be shouting anyway. Yeah. I will be shouting.
Speaker 7And Green Gots. Angy's coming too. And he's got plenty. And Green Gots was a bit stiff yesterday.
Speaker 9Yeah. That was a tough watch. That's ideal for him, that race. And yeah, he was unlucky. But yeah, that's racing. Sometimes you get it, sometimes you don't.
Speaker 2That is racing. Well, enjoy Lamaros. Thanks very much for your time and well done, mate. Send our love to Eileen. She's a superstar and job well done by your mum as well.
Speaker 9And just one for the punters. It's Perisher. We're in race five tomorrow.
Speaker 2Beautiful. We'll have $100 on Perisher. Jay McDonald rides the Australian bloodstream. See you at lunch, mate.
Speaker 7See you at lunch. See you at lunch.
Speaker 2Don't let Johnny drink again, Kieran. Thanks for that. There's Kieran Marr. We'll take a break. We'll continue on the means test next.
Speaker 1This is Giddy Up. With Gareth Hall.
Speaker 2It's a big show. We've got Phil Cunningham. He's one of the biggest owner and breeders in world racing. Of course, he founded Rebel Racing in the UK based at Newmarket. He's the major. Well, I think he's the majority shareholder of the next episode that won the Coolmore. So he's going to be our special guest for our breeding and bloodstock segment on our Wednesday. He's a ripper too. Might be getting to Phil a little later on. And Cam Massey as well, who owns Point of Law and the next episode. He's a champion too. He'll be joining us.
Speaker 7Had a good catch up with him on Tuesday.
Speaker 2A few text messages coming through. But the big question is now, and I was talking to a prominent trainer there yesterday at the races. I don't want to give away his name because it's not fair. But he was saying to me, and it got me thinking, that Kieran Mars now surpassed Chris Waller as our best trainer. With the success that he's had in the spring. Now, if he does it again in the autumn, I think then it's a really strong case to say that he surpassed Chris Waller as our best trainer. But you have a look at his results this spring. He is the informed trainer of the country at the moment. Even though Waller got a group one double there on Saturday. And it just proves their dominance in this sport at the moment. But Kieran's one of all the big dancers. Everest, Melbourne Cup. He's done it all basically. Cool more. Does he want a golden slipper?
Speaker 8Yes. Or does he want a golden slipper? I don't think so. I don't know. It'll only be a matter of time before it happens.
Speaker 2If he hasn't. But what would you say to that, Wayne? Who is the best trainer in the land? Is it Mara Waller?
Speaker 8Well, I'll tell you what. I never, ever, ever sit on the fence on this show. But genuinely, I don't know. I really, really don't know. And that's not like me. Because normally I've got a yay or a nay. But I don't know. I mean, you just look at the weekend. I mean, Lady Shenandoah bolted in. You know, he just won the Derby. Kieran's won the Coolmore. He's just won the Melbourne Cup. I mean, they're neck and neck. And look, they're the two superior trainers. And it's a bit like. It's saying, who's the better horse in the country? This is what we're actually saying. But, you know, I mean, Chris's arsenal is still huge. You know what I mean?
Speaker 7You want Dustin Martin or Nick Dacos?
Speaker 8What do you want?
Speaker 7They're both the same. 100%. I don't know whether.
Speaker 8And they're both Dallians. They're both Brownlow winners. Yes. Correct. But I'll tell you what this is. This is really, really good pub talk. Because absolutely, in this case, no one will be categorically 100% right.
Speaker 2Who's the better trainer, Johnny? You've got horses with both of them. Yeah, I do.
Speaker 7Look, I have a lot with Kieran. Kieran, clearly. But I've got so much respect for Chris. Okay, you're going to sit on the bench too. Well, look, I mean, look, I'm a Kieran Ma man, but I love Chris Waller. He's a great supporter of ours. And as I said, we've had one, I've won a Melbourne Cup with him. I've won, I think maybe Chris Waller's probably, I'm going to say 20, 20 group ones. Hall of Famer. One of the greats of all time.
Speaker 8Well, I'll tell you one thing about both of them, right? Their records are unbelievable. And their records are probably very similar as far as winning the same types of races. But we're, we're both of them probably haven't nailed it is in the two-year-old ranks. And Chris has started to in the last couple of years.
Speaker 7Yeah, three or four years. Yeah, he has.
Speaker 8But you know what I mean? But as far as winning, winning diamonds and winning slippers, that both of those guys is.
Speaker 2It's a difficult conversation to have. I've got to take a break. I think it's, I agree with you, Wayne. It is hard to split between the two champions trainers, but the frightening, the frightening aspect for their rival trainers that these two going at each other is inspiring them to get better. So they don't let the other one get that far in front or believe that they're in front of him. And they're leaving everyone behind at the moment. They'd be smiling at each other.
Speaker 8But you'd love to know what they're thinking.
Speaker 2We're going to take a break. We'll come back with your questions next on the Garrett's Horse and Hound text line. Welcome back to Giddy Up. It's going to be, geez, the steward's room. We might knock it out of the steward's room today.
Speaker 8What about on, what about on Monday when we're talking about having this show this morning? You wouldn't have believed what we're, where we're at with this show.
Speaker 2How does Wayne Hawks and the other trainers pay their bills when Mara and Waller win everything? Hey guys, congrats, John. Ben Allen suspended. Stewards reported that Allen used the whip 10 times before the 100 meter mark. Double what is allowed under the racing rules. The 27 year old was subsequently fined $5,000 and suspended for a whopping 16 meetings. I still thought he rode that horse to treat royal supremacy. Hi, Gareth. I think Michael Kent senior needs some credit for developing Ethan Brown into the package. He is today. Very professional young man. Um, I remember Wayne Hawks saying he didn't know if Ethan Brown going to Hong Kong when he did was the right decision when he just started getting so many good rides here and cementing himself. And I agree, but he's come back and become arguably. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. He's the best jockey in Victoria currently. I did say that. Yes. A hundred percent. I did. Um, what else have we got? We've got a couple of funny texts. What about this one? We're going to do it. Do it. Do it.
Speaker 7Point point of law could save the Aussie bread stars. Yeah. When he heads to start down here being by Frankel. Yeah. Got the turn of foot.
Speaker 2Um, four of the last five Melbourne cup jockeys. We'll come back with more next. This is the means test on a Wednesday. I appreciate all of the text messages on the Gareth Halls and Hound text line. A lot of love for you two today. Unbelievable, really. A lot of not. A lot of love, yeah. Point of law could save the Aussie bread stays, as Johnny just pointed out when he heads to stud down the line. Frank Clowder, the deep impact man. Hope the big boys support him. That's from Turtle. Good on you, Turtle. Four of the last five Melbourne Cups have been ridden by attendees of the Mornington Air B&B. Imagine what. Could have been for Wayne. That's from Tom from Turok. Oh, boy, yes.
Speaker 8Hang on a second. It was only alleged that Mark Zara was there, wasn't it? I don't know. Was it only alleged? I think so. I think so. Anyway. I think so.
Speaker 7Very stiff test.
Speaker 2I think so. Yes, yes, yes. It was Robbie Williams yesterday. The pre-race. The pre-race entertainment blew everything that the NRL and the AFL have ever done out of the water. Agree there. Congratulations, Johnny. Great result. Love your work. I think it's time for a hair transplant if you're going to keep getting the amount of TV time you're currently getting. The race start at 3 p.m., but that hairline doesn't start till midnight. That's from Phil. Phil. Come on.
Speaker 7That'd be Phil Merton, who's bald. Very happy for Johnny.
Speaker 2A great man doing his best for the sport deserves all the success that comes his way. What about this one, G?
Speaker 7Shut up. Shut up, Johnny. Give me a spell. Take the win. Enjoy. Move on. The crap you say makes people sick. Who was that? You are such a suck. Who wrote that?
Speaker 8Who wrote that? Jono. Good on you, too. Good on you, Jono. I'll tell you what, Jono. This is his hour. So if you can't win a Melbourne Cup and come in here and gob off today, fair dinkum.
Speaker 10Never call us again, please.
Speaker 2Never. Can you ask Johnny what a return on investment like this is for point of view? If the floor maybe looked like post this win and inspiring own other than seeing the prize money breakdowns, I'd love to understand how it all trickles down and what may be projected.
Speaker 8Well, you're nearly out of him now, surely. We're out for sure. Yeah. This is like Mad Monday, except it's a Wednesday for you, Johnny.
Speaker 7Yeah. It is. So it'll be interesting to see what we do with the cup. I spoke to a few of the guys this morning, and I think like gold trip, they just auctioned it off. How much will you go for?
Speaker 2Like how much do you? It went for $800,000, didn't it, V?
Speaker 7Yeah. I don't know how much the cup's worth. It's over a million. Is it really?
Speaker 2With the prize money. It's a prize of gold at the moment. Is it really? Yeah. Is it really?
Speaker 8Yeah. That cup there, right there. It was over a million dollars. Bloody hell. Really? So gold. See you later. Straight to the melting pot. So I think Neil Werrett bought gold trips for $800,000. Yeah. And Mark Zara on Melbourne Cup night dropped it, and it was bent like a boomerang. Yeah. And they actually got it straightened up. See, I actually would have left it. I would have left it too. I would have left it on the angle, because that's part of the, like if anyone else had a gold trip, I would have left it on the angle. If anyone else had done it, you'd just want to rip them one.
Speaker 7But because- I'll tell you what, this was going to be a COVID spreader if COVID was around, because Diggers had it filled with beer and champagne, and there was vodka in it, and it was a big connection piece of all the different brands. So is that what it's worth? Wow. Yeah. Really?
Speaker 8And what about beforehand? You're not allowed to touch it. Everyone's got the white glove on. Johnny's been throwing it around like it's a six-pack of Foster's. Yeah. Sorry, we're Asahi at Flemington, like six-pack of Asahi.
Speaker 2Three minutes past 10, let's play the Stewart. Stewart's room. Mr. Hawks and Mr. O'Neill, can you please report to the Stewart's room? First of all, we start with the scratching of Asterix yesterday. Chris Waller, he's the trainer of Asterix. Race day treatment was an honest mistake by one of his staff members. It shouldn't have happened, but you feel for that staff member. She didn't deliberately, or he didn't deliberately do it. She. And you do have to feel for her, but it's a big mistake to make on cup day. And I would imagine the great trainer would have been a little embarrassed about it all because he's such a professional, Chris Waller. He doesn't make these type of mistakes, Johnny O'Neill, but it would have been a difficult conversation to call the owner to say, well, you're out of the Melbourne Cup because we're stuffed up. Yeah, look, would have been very difficult.
Speaker 7But as you say, I mean, Chris's systems and stuff that he's got in place would normally allow for that stuff to be pretty smooth. So someone's obviously made a mistake. These things happen. And leading into a Melbourne Cup, never ideal.
Speaker 2So you don't get that. It costs you $80,000 to get into a Melbourne Cup. You don't get that money back.
Speaker 7I don't know. I'm not quite sure. You wouldn't, would you? I wouldn't have thought.
Speaker 2Final acceptance. You got fined $50,000 as well, Wayne.
Speaker 8Look, it's on the excessive side, getting fined $50,000. But for where it is, it was an honest mistake. So people have said, oh, how come Friedman's got 28 days for race day treatment and, you know, disqualified and Chris didn't. Well, this was slightly different, obviously. Chris owned it. He owned up to it. The girl, apparently, the strapper was very, very distraught. She'd obviously done the same thing day in, day out and just made a mistake. I mean, we heard Kieran before saying he's got 220 staff. They make mistakes. 219 of them make mistakes. And let me tell you, the 220th, Kieran makes mistakes. We are all human. But what this does is it puts her back in a real human slot from the point of view of this poor girl has gone and done the absolute impossible. But I mean, this. Yeah, Sestina lost a bandage, you know, before a, before a Cox plate. Was it, was it, was that a, you know, was that just the Velcro coming loose? Was it, was it, was that the bandage not being put on properly? Accidents are going to happen. So $50,000 was extreme, but it was our biggest race. Chris owned it. He was. How many times would it happen
Speaker 2then when the security guards aren't there
Speaker 8that people treat their horses on race day? So, so, so.
Speaker 2And it was only like, it's not performance enhancing. No. No. No. But you're not allowed to treat your horses on race day. That's the rule.
Speaker 8So, so what happens is, and people have asked that question, right? About the security guard was there and you brought it up earlier this morning. What, what did you say, Garrett?
Speaker 2I said that one of the security guards say, hang on a sec, you can't touch that horse.
Speaker 8Right. So what happens is when you have the security guards come with a group one, they'll get there at whatever time they're asked to be there. And they'll travel with the horse all the way to, it gets the races. And then in theory, once it's on course, they get knocked off and say, thanks for coming. See you later. So they stand there and say nothing. They are not there to tell you what you can and what you can't do. Right. And to be fair, they are just security guards documenting everything. It would be strapper walks in, brushes the horse's mane and tail, gets a towel, wipes its face. So they would have just written down and said, um, strapper walked in, got the ointment, put ointment on the horse's legs. And then the, um, Racing Victoria's, uh, integrity team walk around and they ask the questions. And then obviously the security bosses will say, what did you have? And they'll look through and go, oh, you put liniment on a horse, have you? Right. Bingo. So that's where it's at. That's where it all stems. So the security guard is not there to, as, as, as the copper, he's just there to look and to observe and just to take notes. So that's how it's, uh, that's how it transpired. So that's what goes down. And the question that was asked earlier this morning was, you know, should we have a security guards? Now someone will say, well, what about the maiden at Menangatang? But integrity is everything. And I think we should have the security guards there on race morning, looking after their horses. I mean, every race. Well, for every race for group one, for the group ones. I mean, who cares what it costs from the point of view, because integrity is a massive, massive big thing. And you know what? We boo who for racing Victoria, not doing enough. How many times have we all said those buggers up there in the, um, you know, in the Pentagon or, you know, what, if you want to call them up there at race Victoria, 400 Epson road, what are they doing? Why are they not, you know, rubbing him or her out and why are they not doing more? They're having a hell of a run at the moment. Yeah. They are having a hell of a run. Hell of a run at the moment. And, and I think Calvin McAvoy was on your show earlier and I think he made a very interesting, interesting point. He said, no, no, if it happens on Melbourne cup day, so be it. So be it. I mean, we have to show integrity. I know we had an issue Derby day and now we've had an issue today. Let me tell you, the NRL has issues all the time. The AFL has issues all the time. Olympic games have issues, you know, or any type of sport has an issue. But if we don't have a strong, strong base of integrity. Where, where, where are we? I mean, you know, do we just go and have an open slather and let everyone go as fast as they want?
Speaker 2Just with the Nick Ryan situation, he didn't turn up to the hearing there on Monday. Um, he's license has been suspended. So he's been stood down. He'll have that inquiry in 26 days. Um, obviously then he'll play guilty or not guilty. He had two syringes with EPO found in his club box. Obviously they are, I reckon they had to know that it was there. Why else would they go straight to the car? Well, that's interesting.
Speaker 7So why, why did he turn up?
Speaker 8Do we know? I don't know. No. Well, because, um, he's getting some help at the moment. Yeah. Probably the nicest way to, uh, to, uh, and we wish. Yeah. And Nixon, Nixon made him one. I said that the other day. So at the end of the day, things, things aren't quite right. And he's getting some help. And you know what? I, we, we all think that's a great thing. And we're all, uh, we're all thinking of him and wishing him the best, but from a steward's integrity point of view, we can't. He has to face the music. You have to face the music. You do the crime. You're going to have to face the music. You're going to have to, uh, you're going to have to do the time. But what we know, the word on the street is this is not over. There's more to come out of this case. What do you mean? I'm not saying that there's more to come.
Speaker 2Well, you just can't say that. Yes, I can. Yeah, we can. Yes, you can. More to come. It's not, it's not, it's not for me to say.
Speaker 8There's going to be more to come out of this, uh, out of this inquiry from what I'm being told. More trainers? I said this inquiry. Ah, this inquiry. Yes. There's a thousand rumors. Other trainers are getting looked at. And I mean, you know what? We, we, we don't. until Los Angeles. A lot of those rumours are crap. Of course there's got to be a lot of rumours that are crap. But you know what? Johnny O'Neill once told me in every rumour there might be a little bit of truth. And you told me that, I reckon, 20 years ago, Johnny. So at the end of the day, I can only talk about the Nick Ryan case. And the word on the street is that there's going to be a bit more coming out. Are they looking into other things? Well, of course they are. And I mean, everyone's talking about it. Make no mistake. I asked someone, where are they injecting it? And what I was told was it was inside the knee where they actually inject it. Now, how true that is, I don't know.
Speaker 2All right, then let's move on. We've got, we're continuing on with the stewards room. This is what happened in the big dance, which was the feature ace at Randwick there yesterday.
Speaker 11Going well by two lengths on fully lit Helsing. Former display trying to push out of a pocket. Pundit keeps forcing it in. Former display can't get out. Gringotts have gone back to the inside three lengths away. He's trying to recover. Helsing moved up to Perthumus. Gringotts needs chopper rescue. Helsing got the front. Former display's out now. Helsing, former display. Former display. Bogdan might have got there.
Speaker 2Photo finish. Well, Gringotts was unlucky, Johnny O'Neill. The protest was thrown in. Fourth fee first. Upheld. So you finished third. The winner dropped back to fourth. Former display. Should have won easily. But you didn't. That's racing, as Kieran Mark pointed out.
Speaker 7That's racing, as Kieran said. It was interesting. I was up sitting on a table with Joe and Jay and Amelia and some other friends. Yeah. And yeah, I was, uh, I was sitting back with my, uh, my hands over my eyes, just shaking my head for about 15 minutes and. Spew bag? Oh my God. But having said that, it was like. What happened? You explain what happened. I saw the overhead, which was, which was interesting. The horse found a beautiful spot. Nash was very happy. He sort of went off the fence in between a couple of other horses. A horse darted out from the inside. A horse darted in from the inside. Smashed him. Um, he probably lost three or four links, I suppose. Lost all his momentum and was just going nowhere. And then when he had sort of two seconds of clear air, he picked himself back up and was going to win the race and then couldn't get through. So, um, I think I would imagine if the, I haven't seen the results from the, from the stewards, but I would imagine, um, that they both got suspended, the ox that caused the drama, I would have thought.
Speaker 2The chairman of, um, stewards at racing New South Wales is Tom Moxon. And he joins us here. Hello to you, Tom. Um, was it an easy decision after watching the replay and, um, hearing the evidence to uphold this protest?
Speaker 12Oh, look, I wouldn't say it was an easy decision, particularly when we're dealing with interference at the 600 meters, it took some deliberation from the panel, but in the end of the day, it was, uh, uh, the view of the panel on the day that, um, Gringotts, um, should have won the race. So then we, when we, um, scrutinize and go through the incident, uh, from the 600 meters, we were satisfied that the cause of the interference to Gringotts was due to formal display shifting out. And as stated, uh, when handing down our findings, um, we were comfortably satisfied that had that interference not occurred, that Gringotts would have got out into clear running and would have
Speaker 2won the race. Well done Tom on that, because I'd like to see more stewards, um, even the interferences early on the race, have the courage to uphold protest because when you need to get interfered sometimes in the early part of the race, I know it's difficult then for the stewards to say, well, whether that would be the difference and how can they prove that was the difference between that horse winning or losing, but having interference in the middle part or at the start of the race can be, um, more damaging to that horse that got interfered with in the last two weeks. That's 200 meters, a hundred meters, Tom, I reckon, especially when you're trying to get your early spot.
Speaker 12And that's right. And there's so much that can unfold when you're dealing with interference and incidents in the early part of, uh, the race. But when we look at this incident at the 600 meters, when we then played how the race did pan out from the 600 meters to the top of the straight, we formed the view that the rightful running of Gringotts was directly behind Magna Terre. And when that, when the field progresses through that 200 meters, he was entitled to be in that spot. That running was taken from him. And if he was in that position on straightening, he clearly is in a position where he can shift out to the outside of Magna Terre. And then the horse has uninterrupted running it in the home straight.
Speaker 7So, I mean, yeah, look, from my perspective, I was pleased that as Gareth said, the work was put into by you guys, which you always do to, to uphold the protest, but Hawks, you and I were talking about it off air before, like, I mean, he's won two big dancers in a row. Gringotts, he clearly should have won the race. Um, and from an owner's perspective and the people that were in it. And the punters. And the punters and the punters, of course, but from the owner's perspective, like it's huge prize money, that big dance. Um, so it was certainly disappointing. And, but having said that, I think, um, I think you made the right decision in upholding it.
Speaker 2So I think, I think Chad, how many weeks did he get there? Um, Tom, I think he's back riding. He's on the 20th of November, so he's got a fair old stint on the sidelines. Now he'd take that suspension. I would imagine after Saturday.
Speaker 12So Chad, uh, incurred a suspension in the golden Eagle when he rode Skyhook. So he was suspended from after Saturday until the 20th of November. So this, the suspension he then received from this incident, um, rules him out until the 5th of December.
Speaker 2So who rides tempted? I should have asked Karen probably Ethan Brown ride tempted on Sunday. Yes. Sorry. So he can ride. I attempted, um, there you go.
Speaker 8Well done Tom for, uh, for upholding that protest because it always is easy when it's with 200 meters to go. But as you rightly said, the further back towards the barriers, the harder it becomes. And the worst ones, when the horse jumps out the gate sideways and knocks me straight over, that's always going to be a hard one to decide. And we all, we all know in theory, if it looks like it should be upheld, that's an easy one, but quite often there's, uh, you know, those 50, 50s let's say, and if it's 50, 50 to be fair, not talking on for you, Tom, but you've got to probably give it to the actual winner. If it's a 50, 50, would that be fair? Yes. Cause it's going to be a hundred percent. So ask him, ask him. He's the chief steward.
Speaker 2That's a good point. You're sorry, Tom.
Speaker 12I apologize. Well, yeah, I suppose comfortable satisfaction is the terminology that we always use. And if we're dealing with 50, 50, I suppose that probably doesn't fit into that category. So yeah, it would need to be more than just a flip, flip of the coin to alter the place.
Speaker 2At the end of the day, it was a stupid question, Wayne. Really? That's why. Don't talk about Tom like that. No, no, I'm joking.
Speaker 7Hey, Tom, Wayne gets very nervous when you're on here. No, I'm actually, no, Tom, Tom
Speaker 8knows I'm like, just quickly, Tom, how was Melbourne cup day at Randwick? Because it's a big day at Randwick. Was the crowd massive?
Speaker 12It was. Yeah. I haven't seen the official figures, but it was as, as it always is at Randwick on, um, cup day. It was a, it was a good crowd.
Speaker 2Good on you, Tom. Thanks very much for joining us, mate. Thanks mate. And we appreciate you coming on and, um, yep, um, we'll catch up with you next time. Thank you. There's Tom Moxon there. We'll take a break. Yes, yes, yes. Is it our nose? And then we'll have our breeding and bloodstock segment. Hey Louie, it's Melbourne cup after the Melbourne cup. I apologize for running late. You beautiful man. He's ready to go. You're always late Gary. Come on Louie. You're always what? We'll take a break and come back with more next and wrap
Speaker 1up the means test. We'll be right back. We'll be right back. We'll be right back.
Speaker 11Yes, yes, yes. Yes, yes, yes. Yes, yes, yes. Yes, yes, yes. So there's plenty of yes, yes, yeses.
Speaker 2Well, under colleague Rogers and her team there at the VRC, Robbie Williams was something else. They've had a great week and the build up to Melbourne cup day, that call of the card and JP McManus. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It's a theatre that I've seen for quite some time. What happened? What happened? Basically they just punted their hearts out. Right. And it was embraced. We embrace what this race is all about. And it's about the punt and, or the part, the punt plays a major part. And it's such an important, I think, event for the week and there's 250, they said on the waiting list to get into the call of the card when it was as entertaining as it comes.
Speaker 7Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I think there was 1200 there.
Speaker 2Unbelievable. 250 on the waiting list. And the rest of the world are jealous of us because they can't do that. Although they don't think they could do that in their respective countries as JP McManus pointed out there in several interviews, who was excellent. They say he doesn't give an interview, JP. He did more interviews than the prime minister.
Speaker 7I spent a bit of time. During election week. He was on, he was on, um, whether it was his table, but Nick Williams was on his table. And I caught up with, with JP McManus and Paul Byrne who are, who are both great friends. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Who are both great form students. And, and you know what? Terrific blokes. They traveled out, they put their money up. They backed Pointer Law. They backed Hopewell Rock. They backed a couple of other horses too. Right. And, um. They backed half the field. Yeah. So, yeah.
Speaker 8So you, you talk about that. My owner, Dr. Anthony Johnson, he's a lung specialist and he owns Briasa. And he said, I want to come down for Derby Day. He got the members tickets. He went and had lunch at Chin Chin, which is the pop-up restaurant there. He rang me on Sunday and I said, oh mate, I forgot about your even here. He said, don't worry about that. He said, how big is this derby? Day stuff. I said, well, to be fair, you've won a TJ Smith with Briasa. You've had him in the Everest. You've been there on the two biggest derbies in the world. days in Sydney, which they are by far, he said, this spring carnival in Melbourne, he said, it's a different beast. His words were, it's a different beast. And so that's a Sydney side. I'd never been to Melbourne before Saturday. I've been to most of the big dances around the world.
Speaker 2I mean, every day is something else.
Speaker 8They're big, but they're not like ours. Ours is special.
Speaker 2Nothing is really like Derby Day. Derby Day's crowd was different
Speaker 8to Melbourne Cup Day's crowd. It was a different type of feel again. It was so good.
Speaker 7I just want to go back
Speaker 8to the Robbie Williams scenario
Speaker 7and whether that's Kylie Rogers or not having a connection. It was Kylie played an instrumental part. Yeah, but whether she had a connection from the old AFL days with him, but I have to tell you, to get a guy like him to come out, he's an elite performer. We all get that right. But the majority of people come out, they get on the stage, they do the rah-rah. He was so interactive with everyone. What's his line? Let me entertain you. He was just incredible, right? And to actually have somebody of his stature to come out. And just be a normal bloke and actually engage with people and put on a wonderful show. He'd go to the Osborne with you. He'd go to the Osborne. Well, you know, he's a Carlton supporter, which is not necessarily that great. Chris Judd owns part of the Port of Law, the Melbourne Cup. I know he does. I'll tell you who else owns part of it. Who? Stephen Green. So Green, he used to play for the Hawks. The Hawks. He's a great mate of Judd's.
Speaker 2Hey, so yeah, well done to everybody involved. What was the crowd? It was the biggest Derby crowd here in a while, 97,000. Are you talking Derby or Cup Day? Cup Day, sorry. Nearly 100,000. Nearly 100,000. Derby, 88,000. It's incredible. So well done everyone involved with the race in Victoria and especially the VRC. And what about the track?
Speaker 8Well, that was going to be one of my two. Yes, yes, yes. Liam O'Keefe, you know what? The Colonel. Is that what we're calling him now? The Colonel. The Messiah. You know what? They all rah-rah that he's the God and he's the guru and whatever, but you know what? He just does the one percenters. And if you looked at the weather forecast, six or seven days, yeah, you thought, oh, you poor buggers. And it's still good. We've still got two big days to go where the weather's not looking the best. Good, you know, like a soft five yesterday morning to turn into the race what it was. And I rang Liam. He was walking around there with his penetroma or whatever he does at 6.30 in the morning. I said, well, I'm in the middle of the, so I rang him. I said, I could just see it here. I said, it's a five. He goes, yeah, it's a five. It's a five. I said, half an hour after Melbourne Cup, it'll go to a four. You're a legend. We'll keep it a five. So everyone in England goes, well, it wasn't a good four. It was actually, we raced as a four. It was a five. Liam, we could all take the PI double five, but it is the hardest job on race day, especially when you've had Cox Plate Day belted on you from the week before. Now, normally we're only two days in. We're three days in for this. And everyone was thinking, what's Champions Day going to be? Yep. My other one was Beaver, your man, Steve Menzies of Manly Hall of Fame. Legend. Came to the races on Saturday. I dropped him at the airport on Sunday. Tuesday morning, he texted me and said, I'm coming back. I'm not leaving. He came back for the day and the night because he loved it so much. He'd never been here before. This is what the Melbourne Cup Carnival does. Yep. Johnny? Yes, yes, yes.
Speaker 7I just think Kylie Rogers and her team. Neil's obviously stepping down as chairman, so he's done a wonderful job there. And, you know, the carnival just gets bigger and bigger every year, doesn't it? Yep. I think the facilities. I went down to the Birdcage. Nine obviously had a marquee down in the Birdcage, and they're doing a wonderful job down there, too. I don't normally sort of get down there because I like to stay up with the horses, but it was the facilities, the food in the terrace. You know, all of these things have changed and continue to evolve, but I was lucky enough to be in the terrace. And I was saying, Nicky Clarkson, who's moved into the marketing role at the VRC, he's done a wonderful job, too.
Speaker 8I've got to give you another yes, yes, yes. Werribee from the point of view of these PET scans and these CT scans, we've all boohooed them. I know this for a fact. You know the Japanese horse that was scratched? Yes. Do you know it had issues of three of its four legs, but they never, ever knew until they did the scans. Now, these were three of the four legs, so that's no one's fault. You imagine if they did a CT on you, Gareth? But that's the thing. You don't know until you've actually done it. So we've had the 23 horses run in the Melbourne Cup, and we've gone through unscathed again. So as bad as what RVL copped the rat for five, six years ago when they changed the protocol, you know what? Well done. All right.
Speaker 2Then let's get to our oh no's before we wrap it up. My oh no's is emergencies. We need emergencies in the Melbourne Cup in 2026. And the other one is.
Speaker 8Hang on, hang on, hang on. But that horse of Waller's comes out at 10.30. The emergency wouldn't have made any difference. No, no. So Gil McLaughlin, did he say that if it goes to the big, big world pool that we could have multiple runners? Hopefully, yeah. Yeah. So Waller's horse coming out at 10.33, it had to come out before 7.30. Correct. And this wasn't all found out until after that. So it wouldn't have affected the emergencies, but I think we should have emergencies in the race. And here's the scenario, right?
Speaker 7I know you say it wouldn't have affected the emergencies. If you've got reserves on the footy ground, or you've got, what do we call them, on the interchange bench, where's the extra. Could we bring them in late? Why. Could we? What I'm saying is if you've got 24. No, because you're betting on it. And you want two emergencies. Can you not. Can you not have the two emergencies go to the races as they normally would as horses? Could we do that? And if one does come out, it gets in, and then the.
Speaker 8Could we do that? Maybe. I mean, we say no. We say no, it's not how it happens when people are betting. Just keep changing. But to be fair. You've got to keep evolving. Be fair. I guarantee you, there's a betting market up somewhere right now for 2027 Melbourne Cup, so.
Speaker 2Maybe. But the emergency was the factor with Defiantly. Like, they should have given him a few more days to prove his fitness. But they had to take him out on Saturday because.
Speaker 8The other problem is. Because we're, you know. Yeah, it's just.
Speaker 2And the other I know. I would imagine that Joseph O'Brien was ropeable with the ride on Bo Mertens with Kislyar.
Speaker 8Was it that bad a ride? Well, yes. No, I'm asking you. What was wrong with him?
Speaker 2I think that he didn't go quick enough. Well, maybe he couldn't catch the other horse.
Speaker 8There's 27 lengths in front, the other horse. Yeah, but they weren't going great sectionals. Well, let me tell you this. I don't think. This is just.
Speaker 2This is from the reports back from the camp that. Joseph O'Brien was, as Calvin McEvoy put it out, he doesn't usually get angry at all. But he was. I think he was frustrated.
Speaker 8Wayne. So. I lost my train of thought. What were you talking about? Okay. William Pike. I spoke to him post-Melbourne Cup. Yep. And he. I said. Because I didn't know the section was that stage. He said, well, if you look at the leader that was a tearaway leader, he said he was running his normal time, to be fair. Yeah. So it looked like the pride of Jenny Sonaro. I said, how slow. How slow were they going? He said. This is his exact quote. He said, mate. He said, my horse is the absolute god of all gods to ride. It was so relaxed. He said, even my horse got angry that they were going so slow. That's my point. He said, they backed up. And then they backed up again. So that shows you how slow they're actually going. So your point is that. It's a stage.
Speaker 2It's a 4,000 metre horse.
Speaker 8Is that Ethan Brown had everything go right, so he was the god. Bo Mertens didn't have everything go right. So you're back. You're back in him.
Speaker 2No, well, his job was to make sure that he rides that horse to its strengths.
Speaker 7If it's a 4,000 metre horse, it should run in 4,000 metre races. Yeah, but they've got to go quicker. But can't you say that about.
Speaker 8Can't you say that about. A few of the other jocks could have taken off. That's my point. Because you can't say that there wasn't any pace.
Speaker 2But you've got to ride the horse to the strengths, to its strengths, Wayne.
Speaker 8You can't say there wasn't any pace in the race because old mate was highfalutin out in front.
Speaker 2Yeah, but it was like the situation of Queen Elizabeth. Like, there was two races. No, that was different. No, it was two races because. No, no, no, no, no, no.
Speaker 8That's different because. Please, Wayne. Pride of Jenny was running track record times out in front.
Speaker 2Yeah. Yeah, but 100%, but they're still riding two different.
Speaker 8Ben Allen, Ben Allen was only running decent sections. But they still went slow.
Speaker 2They were going slow with the weight, so.
Speaker 8So who's the one that drags the field up? Well, Kisley is. This is the problem, though. Kisley should have. But 1,400 from home. But Kisley should have. Does Bo Merton say, oh, no, I'm going to take off and I'm just going to cart everyone home?
Speaker 2100%, because that's how you ride that horse to its strengths.
Speaker 7Okay. Because it can't sit and sprint. Okay. Okay. And the other thing I want to add with the jockeys, Ben Mellon's ride on Zaran was extraordinary. Yeah. Extraordinary ride. And Ben Allen's ride was great. And I want to just give Sam Clippard a pat on the back, too. He gave it away, retired, just come back and run third. I actually spoke to Clippo after the cup and said, how were you feeling? He said, Johnny. The best. I moved up and I thought I was home. I was sort of shaking when I moved up and went bang. So, Clippo, well done to you, mate. Great, great effort to come back. We are riding out of time, mate. And DMACC. DMACC, my Irish man ran fourth.
Speaker 2Yeah. I saw him, too.
Speaker 7What do you mean? What do you mean that? He's not J-MACC, he's DMACC. No, DMACC. Very good DMACC.
Speaker 8Very good DMACC. How many MACCs are there?
Speaker 2I don't know. It's quick. I'm running out of time. Big MACCs are good. You're not eating any of mine.
Speaker 8Listen, this one, Johnny, this is my own from this morning. We all know in theory, if it looks like it should be upheld, that's an easy one. But quite often, there's those 50-50s, let's say. And if it's 50-50, to be fair, not talking for you, Tom, but you've got to probably give it to the actual winner if it's a 50-50. Would that be fair? Yes, because it's got to be 100%. Ask him. All right, then. Ask him. He's the chief steward, Gareth.
Speaker 2That's a good point. Sorry, Tom. I apologise for that. We're running out of time, Wayne. It just clarifies that was a dumb question. You're a goose. It's a dumb question. Well, what do you mean? It's an oh-no segment. If it's 50-50.
Speaker 3Yeah, we might be spoke to that one on the last track of what we're talking about.
Speaker 8It's an oh-no segment, my friend. You boys are fixing me up. No, you fix yourself up. Quick, Johnny, you've only been on for an hour and a half. I know. I've got nothing. No. I wasn't happy about the big dance.
Speaker 7I want to spew. That's what I wanted to do. But anyway, I'm not spewing because I won the Nobel Cup.
Speaker 2Anyway, boys, it's a privilege to have you in the studio on a Wednesday after the means test.
Speaker 8You are the champion, Johnny.
Speaker 2Johnny, you go and enjoy Lamaro's. Dimmer will look after you.
Speaker 7And we're going to go to the crown lunch now, too. We just got a note from Joey O'Shaughnessy. That's the ladies that have to. I don't know what it is. I'm just popping in for half an hour with a cup. You're going to be on a current
Speaker 8affair today, tonight, you name it. You'll be on every show. Every show. Really? Who's the champion, Gareth?
Speaker 7Johnny O'Neill? No, Pointer Law's the champion, mate. Kieran Maher's the champion and Ethan Brown are the champions.
Speaker 8This is your show, though, Johnny. Johnny O'Neill, boys. Johnny, nice to see you this morning. We'll see you on Saturday. And this was brought to you by Fisherman's Friend. Yes. We'll keep on fighting till the end.
Speaker 2We'll be right back. So, what else have we got? G'day, fellas. Great show. Why are the protests done on relegation method rather than replacement method? They need to change the rules, but that is a good point you make. When interference is that bad, maybe they should get relegated. Finally, live telecast of the call of the card. It was awesome. I'll never be able to punt like these guys, but it felt like I was there having a crack. Rob Waterhouse should be banned. That's from Swanee. I reckon Rob adds to the theater to tell you the truth. But I agree with you. It was the best part of the week, Neely. That call of the card loved it. 36 minutes past 10. A couple more characters joining us. Phil Cunningham. He's arrived in Australia for the first time. He part-owns the next episode. He's one of the biggest thoroughbred owners and breeders in the UK with Rebel Racing, which is based in Newmarket. He will be our special guest next. So, looking forward to that. And Cam Massey will join him. He's also a part-owner of the next episode. The fields are out for Flemington on Saturday. And there's some mouthwatering clashes before breeding and bloodstock. I'll just read out a few of the buried draws for the group ones. The champion Sprint Giga Kick 7. Mazu 11. Headwall 6. Cabalus 8. Ray McNeary 12. Tempted 9. Jolly Star 10. So, the two favourites drawn alongside each other. Charmstone 3. Skybird 1. Gigi's Mistruth 5. Point Barrow 2. Plaintiff 4. The champion's mile. Tom Kitten. Lindemann. Buckaroo? Question mark whether he goes around. Seppel's Barrier 5. Pounding one another will 4. Autumn Glow Barrier 2. Within the law, barrier number 8. And then the champion stakes. Cosmic Crusader 11. Light Infantryman Barrier 5. So, Delia 7. Attrition Barrier 9. Birdman 1. Land Legend Barrier 8. Vonhawk 3. Sabarge 10. Omni-Man Barrier 6. Eliana Barrier 4. And Treasure the Moment Barrier number 2. So, that is the buried draw for the champion sprint. Champion stakes, I should say there. Which will be race 8, 10 minutes past 5 on Saturday at Flemington. 40 minutes past 10. It's now time for Breeding Bloodstock. I thought we had a spin.

Speaker 2Thanks to Oz Horse, your guide to Australia's world-class thoroughbred industry. Visit OzHorse.com.au and prize easy feed. Delivers balanced nutrition, supporting performance, recovery, condition and overall horse well-being every day. This man's been a star as well of our carnival. I haven't got to meet him just yet, but I want to. And we're about to have a chat to him. Phil Cunningham. Obviously, he is a very prominent thoroughbred owner and breeder in the UK. He founded Rebel Racing. He's based in Newmarket. He's a big supporter of the game in the UK. And he's purchased a horse in Australia, I think, for the first time at the Magic Million sale in January. His name was the next episode. And now he's a Coolmore champ. And he joins us here on Breeding Bloodstock along with the part owner of the next episode. And also, he part owns Point of Law in Kam Massey. First of all, Phil, welcome to Giddy Up and welcome to Australia, mate. Congratulations there on Saturday.
Speaker 13Oh, thank you very much. It's all been a bit of a surreal experience. Starting to sink in now. Yeah. But what an enjoyable one. And what about you? Couldn't have gone any better.
Speaker 2Yes, unbelievable, mate. Kam Massey joins as well. What a week he's had. Part owner in the next episode. Worth whatever he's worth now. 30 plus million, maybe more. And then he. Purchases a horse with a group of friends off the King and wins a Melbourne Cup. Kam Massey, take a bow. What a week, mate.
Speaker 14Congratulations. Yeah. It's pretty unbelievable. I can't really put it into words what's actually happened. And I don't think it's going to take a while. But yeah, we'll just let the dream continue.
Speaker 2What was the biggest thrill, Kam? Knowing that you've got a stowing prospect that's worth a lot of money and the investment's been a genius investment in the next episode or winning a Melbourne Cup?
Speaker 14I'm not going to disrespect anyone in the racing industry. Coolmore, the emotion of the Coolmore was just unbelievable. I had a third of my best mates come down from Brisbane and we all went mad. You know, I walked into the Cup yesterday and it hadn't really dawned on me what was about to happen. And I kind of had a bit of a feeling that something special was going to. But yeah, you know, I think it's going to take a while.
Speaker 2Yeah. Phil, we know your deeds over in Europe, obviously with Rebel Racing and then obviously you've been able to have success, immediate success here in Australia. But just tell us a bit about your journey. Like where did your love for this great game come from?
Speaker 13Dad had horses when I was younger. Yeah. Amazingly, probably not really very good ones. So I learned a lot in a short period of time. And then when I left college, I got a few mates. I got a few mates together and we bought a horse, which came second six times on his first six starts. And we sold him and he won for the new owners. So it was, you know, an interesting start. But the first horse I actually owned on my own in England, or the first horse I ran in my colours, was a horse called Cockney Rebel back in 2007. He won the English Guineas and the Irish Guineas. So I think the first horse to run in the territory of my colours seems to be the way to go.
Speaker 2And you started off Rebel Racing. What was the inspiration behind that? And tell us a little bit about what Rebel Racing is about in the UK.
Speaker 13Yeah, I suppose it's a little bit of a unique situation or operation. I started it sort of 11, 12 years ago and just the, you know, it's a hobby that's grown out of control, really, my racing interests. And I decided to buy my own yard. So Rebel Racing is actually the training company. I own all the horses outright and we'd have 50 in total. your terminology yeah yeah um at any one time all trained by um a fantastic trainer young trainer
Speaker 2called Richard Spencer yeah um and you've made quite an impact in Australian racing do you think that you will invest more in this country after the success that you've had
Speaker 13yes definitely I mean this was really pretty much sort of dipping a toe in the water yeah and um you know I've had such a great time this week it's actually my first time racing in Australia in a live environment and um like everything and obviously while I've got the bug is uh yeah I'd like to have a runner on every
Speaker 2day it's an easy obviously you've had so much success in business but how difficult is it to carry on that success in this racing game because it is a competitive landscape isn't it you're competing against some powerhouses of of the world sheiks and the the the power of coolmore um so how difficult is it to to run a successful business um and compete with these bigger organizations i think
Speaker 13the where we've had success in the uk is the and once again i treat it as a hobby um we've sort of grown in propulsion to the success i've had with my business yeah so not at any time have we really overextended ourselves i think we've targeted races in england in particular um i mean we've won most of the large sprint handicaps over the last two three years where they wouldn't necessarily be as competitive as opposed to the the derby type horses um in relation to to the shakes and cool more and yeah we've carved out a bit of a niche and uh it's going well and cam your
Speaker 2experience in this racing game how long have you been in the
Speaker 14sport for i made it pretty relative relatively new you know last couple years sort of similar story to what phil just said to you you know you dip your toe and you have a couple you get a bit of the bug, have a lot of slow ones and then you go alright, let's get serious and let's go and that's kind of how this It's going to have this whole, things happen it's addictive cab oh it's the feeling that you get yeah winning a race you can't i said i've said it many times the last couple of days if you bottle that you'd be a billionaire yeah yeah you felt it like you just can't get it and
Speaker 2phil you're in the breeding game as well like what does this mean for your business to have a cult like the next episode
Speaker 13it's going to be a bit of a game changer i'm racing first and foremost and so we have a dozen mares and a small farm just outside of new market but it's really to support our stallion rajasing um who's based at the national study new market so we're the hardest thing i think on the breeding side um for us is if we if we breed what we think's a good one we always um hold on to them and interestingly it wasn't until we wrote the call of the card um on monday but we actually bred the dam of um the third in the in the uh in the melbourne
Speaker 2cup okay yeah that's it
Speaker 13yeah yeah yeah and his his grandmother's still on our farm she's 30 years of age obviously retired a long time called vino veritas okay but i mean it was an amazing amazing coincidence
Speaker 2so anthony thompson's a shareholder as well from winning stud who who bred the next episode obviously you breed horses as well so what do you do with him do you try and sell him to a stud or do you want to keep him and maybe um shuttle him from australia to to the uk do you want to will he race say rule ask it next year
Speaker 13uh kieran and will came over in july um had a look around our yard interestingly point of law won that day at the new market course um and the loose plan was obviously i know they're always subject to change is that yeah he'll come over stay with us and uh he'll try and do the uh try and do the double and that is exciting well i'm a racing fan like i say first and foremost and you know given the uh you've got a horse with the ability to do and achieve certain things as long as they're fit and well obviously we'll uh hopefully go that route although i hear there's a horse in america that's claiming that they're the fastest horse in the world yeah yeah it could be coming could be coming over here in
Speaker 2we had wesley
Speaker 13super super we
Speaker 2had wesley warden yeah sorry it's um yeah sorry
Speaker 13yeah super super horse what you did at ascot last year was phenomenal um but yeah i'd love to take him on
Speaker 2yeah we had um tom magnie just texted me just before i'm dropping names here but he's over in america and he um wesley ward um they're talking up their horses chances coming to australia for the new market and they say they're going to smash tempted um so they're talking up a big game they're cocky the americans a little bit but it would great to have wesley ward in this country compete in a black caviar lightning stakes and then he wants to head back to ask it so it could be something like that yeah i think it's a good idea i think it's a good idea but it's good for racing this competition and the banter um phil and uh i reckon that's why us racing fans love that great game and i think you need your owners and your trainers to show a bit of a character to talk up their horses and bring it on have the contest that we
Speaker 13all want yeah i first and foremost like you say if you've got the opportunity to get these horses together i don't think um our team here would shy away from uh from anyone
Speaker 2yeah hey um phil what do you think we do in this country as you said you're a racing fan um what have you made of the the australian racing scene since you've been here
Speaker 13i think you've got an outstanding product yeah um and look i'm sure many people have said it before the english racing could learn a lot um prize money obviously is one of the biggest issues in the uk at the moment um gambling another huge issue i mean i went to like i say the call in the card you couldn't find four bookmakers to stand on that stage
Speaker 2in england that it's interesting and that's and that's without
Speaker 13the authorities running around doing this proof of funds and uh affordability checks as well so yeah the gambling game's pretty much dead in england um probably the only lad that would take a bet was paul burner was having a few bets there yeah yeah on monday yeah and
Speaker 2um captain um obviously you've been in this game for a little bit now but what have you learned meeting different people like phil and i guess you associate yourself with a lot of successful people with the horses that you're involved in yeah
Speaker 14for me it's about the people that i've just met and gone on the journey with you know i met phil two years ago at the magic million sale he'd never seen the gold coast um i took him around took his son surfing and we've just connected to the point where you know for the last four days i've just been we've been together every day i've never met some english or irish people in my life but every day we're um having fun so what's the dream for
Speaker 2you now mate you've done it all really
Speaker 14oh yeah everyone marks are called me after the after the melbourne cup said give it away you'll never do what you just did um so who knows we'll we'll just see what happens um great
Speaker 2to have you two on the show phil congratulations and thanks for investing in australian racing i think you've been one of the highlights of our carnival and um i think everybody was excited once you told kiramar that you wanted to purchase a horse at the magic million sale and get involved and in our racing and um yeah we wish you the best of luck with the next episode going forward and hopefully you can run a big race at rural ask it for you next year fantastic thank
Speaker 13you very much good on you phil and
Speaker 2good on you cam thanks for joining us mate we appreciate you coming on the show as always for the first time but we get you on again anyway thanks good on you cam

Speaker 2right then james price joins us now g'day james g'day gareth how are you good thank you it was interesting watching everything unfold last week regarding some of those one of the melbourne cup horses being sold online and we're talking to a few people there yesterday it's probably going to be more common practice i reckon going forward ahead of the bigger races yeah my
Speaker 16word it was a fantastic opportunity to sell some shares in those horses and you know you go back um and listen to that interview with phil and cam and just the excitement that they exude you know having had runners in the race and i think it'll be uh that digital melbourne cup share sale will be something that can only just grow and you know these big time owners want to throw two and a half and five percent and ten percent shares to uh to give someone a you know an opportunity to be in that mounting yard um yeah it'll be uh it'll be something uh just to grow moving
Speaker 2forward what was um obviously the english batter is the feature two-year-old race on saturday the first race on champions day um geez you must be happy with that field 19 horses thundering down that straight running for some wonderful prize money
Speaker 16yeah it's terrific it uh it's the third time it's been run at uh at flemington before that it was moody valley and it's wonderful to have them running down that uh that flemington straight obviously a four hundred thousand dollar race and i think it's going to be a great race and the majority of them um unraced uh unraced two-year-olds and babies so it'll be fascinating to see uh how they come through it obviously great names like calamari ring won it last year within the law two years ago in the first edition of flemington and she went on she'd been go on to be a fantastic um philly for bjorn baker and the derby team so uh it always always throws up some really really good racehorses that banner and
Speaker 2the bracelet tomorrow as well another english race on captain jackson is going to be a fantastic race i think it's going to be a fantastic race i think it's going to be a fantastic race i think it's going to be a fantastic race i think it's going to be a fantastic race i think it's going to be a fantastic race i think it's going to be a fantastic race race on cup week yeah
Speaker 16three hundred and fifty thousand dollar uh banner for for um uh for mayors last year won by verena rose and the year before running by i'd actually have to say i'd say this edition uh tomorrow is probably the the best edition we've had of the race i mean you know um fireball miss you won the queensland oaks sass appeal uh was beaten just over three links on saturday by lady shannon doerr still a cap uh backs up again for the first time in saturday so a terrific uh a terrific uh edition of the race that's for sure yeah and terrific
Speaker 2prize money as well and i reckon it's a credit to english to be involved in cup week to have these races they're only eligible of course for horses that um were purchased out of an english sale so a great opportunity for owners to to enjoy a runner on on cup week don't go anywhere i've got to take a break i'm james on the other side of it i want to have a chat about that premier catalog because it's not far away from being finalized so we'll talk about that next here on givy up
Speaker 1join the conversation text us on 0 4 9 7 3 6 7 3 6 Live across Australia, this is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall. Back to Giddy Up.
Speaker 2We've got about 46 minutes left on this show, and it is jam-packed. It's been a busy show, as you would expect, after the running of the famous race, the Melbourne Cup. My special guest from Inglis is James Price, the man that looks after Inglis here in Victoria. We just had a chat about the Inglis banner. It's a big field of two-year-olds, most of them debutantes going around in that first race on Saturday to kick off Champions Day. The bracelet, as James pointed out, probably one of the best editions of the bracelet tomorrow, the Inglis bracelet. And then the Premier catalogue is not far away from being finalised. James Price with me. James, how do you go through that selection process? Because obviously the Victorian industry, it's getting better each and every season from a quality perspective with the farms here in this state. But how do you weigh up what horses go to a Premier and what horses go to Easter? Even a classic as well.
Speaker 16Yeah, I suppose the process between us here in Melbourne and also in Sydney process probably starts, you know, at the end of the weaning sale. So we start in July and we're sort of getting to the business end now of pressing the print button. So it's a matter of working with the vendors, visiting as many farms as we can across all states in Australia and also New Zealand and trying to put the best catalogue we can together. I would say for a catalogue of 800 horses, we're probably inspecting about 1750 horses that want a spot in the Premier catalogue. So between their, you know, across their pedigrees and also their physical confirmation, we're trying to pick the best 800 horses. Obviously, we've got the classic sale in Sydney in February. That's about probably tomorrow or Monday. Chris Rush will press the print button and then a few weeks later we'll press the print button. Chris Rush will press the print button for the Premier catalogue here in March next year. But it's a balancing act in terms of what we feel is good enough on pedigree and physicality to make the sale, but also working with the owners and the vendors as to which sale they might want to sell at. Some suit classic, some suit Premier and obviously the cream of the crop goes to our Australian Easter sale next year. Are you happy with what you're seeing? Delighted. Yeah. Look, everyone says, what's the catalogue going to be like next year? And it's. It's hard to sort of put it into words in the last few months we've seen great horses, mediocre horses and not so good horses. So it's hard to sort of say, well, let's put all these together and it'll be a great catalogue. But all I can say is the results that we've seen at Premier this year and also last year, it's getting fantastic results both on the track but also for the consignors. So when talking to clients, the momentum that the sale has gained, in the last two years, people want to be selling at Premier 2027. So off the back of that, all I can say is that it will be, I don't want to say it's going to be the best catalogue ever, but I know the support we're getting from all the Victoria's best vendors, but also New South Wales vendors wanting to target the sale for the first time in several years, I think is a real pointer that the sale is very much tracking in the right direction. And, you know, we're deep in the midst of the Melbourne Cup carnival, but as soon as we turn that corner, we'll be very much focused towards yielding sales next year and bring it on, I say.
Speaker 2Good on you, James. Thanks for your time. Thanks, Gareth. There's James Price, thanks to Wingless. From Betsy.com.au, Will Alford joins us. He's a superstar, young form expert, analysis. He does a wonderful job and he joins us now. G'day, Will. He's going to break down the Melbourne Cup for us. Hello to you, Will.
Speaker 17Hi, Gareth. How are you?
Speaker 2I'm good. Can you believe, and you set this out on XD last night, the point of law, run the quickest 200 metres of the day after two miles. How good can this horse be?
Speaker 17It's hard to believe. And I think it was just sustained speed over the last thousand metres, really. It was just excellent. And I think if they went faster, I think he might have won by further. He was just tremendous. He's probably one of the best, he is one of the best Melbourne Cup winners, at least in modern history. So, yeah, he's an excellent winner of the race.
Speaker 2The sky's the limit, only six start. He's done what he's been able to do and he seems just to be a horse that who knows what level he can get to. He's a beautifully bred horse as well, of course, bred by the king. What did you make of the race there on Tuesday when you analysed the numbers?
Speaker 17Yeah. Well, I don't have all the numbers. I don't have all the numbers back yet. I'm just looking at raw times. But it seemed like the pace was quite good early. But once they found their position, they really quite backed it off. And Royal Supremacy created this enormous lead through essentially the slowest part of the race. So between the 2200 metres and the mile, he recorded splits of 13.22, 13.29 and 13.35. And the rest were hardly breaking 14 seconds. So. So when you think of it like, you know, lengths were being sold at their cheapest. So. It's hard to fathom really how can
Speaker 2that happen really in a Melbourne Cup?
Speaker 17Well, I think, you know, it sort of reminded me of Pride of Jenny's Queen Elizabeth. He might not have gone as fast as what she did that day, but he was still going, you know, probably faster than par. It was just that the rest of them were going so slow. And, yeah, I think, I think that they were a little, a little lucky. Not, yeah, I mean, just, just through that section, he just got away with such an easy lead. He basically stole 10 lengths from them. The fantastic ride by Ben Allen. And I think, I think if he were riding a better chance, I think he might have stolen that car.
Speaker 2I agree with you. I just don't think he stayed. But I gave my 3-2-1 out. And Benny Mellon was a little bit stiff. His ride on Saran was excellent. But I gave three to. I gave two to Ethan Brown to get this horse to settle off that tempo and to allow him to do what he did. I gave two to Ben Allen. I reckon his ride was brilliant on Royal Supremacy. I didn't have him finishing the top 10 any day of the week. And he was able to own that race. And then three, I gave one to Sammy Clippett for the job he did with Juju Cabot. But I couldn't believe, I like Kislyer tactics. That was the staggering part. Like that horse needs a strong gallop and they're going. Those sectionals out the back, letting Royal Supremacy getting in front. And then he's just got no hope because he's got no turn of foot.
Speaker 17Yeah, I mean, of course, of course, all the jockeys can't be to blame because, you know, if you're back toward the inside, you can't jump over them. But, you know, there was some there was some interesting rides. And yeah, as I said, I think they might have been a bit lucky that Royal Supremacy didn't quite stay and obviously wasn't one of the better chances. Obviously, if he was a better chance, they might not have let him get out so far ahead. But yeah, I mean, I expect, yeah, Kislyer, I would have, I would have thought that they would try and make it, you know, a grueling test because that's, you know, he's a 4,000 metre horse. He's won at Royal Ascot.
Speaker 2So would you, how good can this horse point of law be?
Speaker 17Well, that's, that's the thing really. It's hard. So the Australian calendar doesn't lend itself to a horse liking. He's a horse that thrives on pressure. He's an aerobic freak, essentially, you know, that sustains speed over a thousand metres. To run the fastest last 200 metres of the meeting at Flemington, you know, obviously we didn't have any big group listed or group races. But even still, to do that at the end of two miles is incredible, really. And we only have one wait for age race over a mile and a half or further, which is the Tancred Stake. So I imagine that'll be the target for him. But I assume that the, I assume that, you know, he'll be, he'll be campaigning. The Cox Plate and Queen Elizabeth and those sorts of races.
Speaker 2So what you know now, Will, what you know now, if he was to run in the champion stakes, would you have him favourite, say on Saturday? Don't forget about he went in a Melbourne Cup. But if it was this time next year and you saw the field that we see come Saturday, do you think he can mix it with our best weight for age horses over the 2000 metres?
Speaker 17He might be. I don't think I'd make him favourite. I mean, it'd depend on the pace of the race. If the pace was going to be slow, I'd say, well, he might not have the speed to mix it with the best 2000 metre horses. But if, you know, like the Cox Plate, you know, I'd say he probably might have even won the Cox Plate this year because of how fast the pace was. Yeah. So, and saying that, geez, they're unlucky they didn't get into the Caulfield Cup with him because he, you know.
Speaker 2I know, if you were on 101 for the Caulfield Cup, unbelievable. But anyway, it's character building. Yeah, he would have won the Cup's double. I think that you make a very good point. So, yeah, it was a great Cup. A famous victory in a way. And he could, as you point out, be one of the better Cup winners that we've had for quite some time. Horses that you want to be taking out of the Cup may be going forward. And if you've got a winner for us coming up before we let you go, Will, because you can give us the best stuff and leave the racing preview. You can give us the best and give them your B. We're going to give them the A set, but give it to us first.
Speaker 17Well, the Melbourne Cup's a hard race to take anything out.
Speaker 2because it's the grand final.
Speaker 17I think maybe James J. Braddock. I just
Speaker 2wanted to hear you say that name. I set you up, basically.
Speaker 17I actually forgot you. I wasn't just saying that. But he was next best over the last 200 metres. I think he ran 11.92. He drew barrier 24 and he didn't have the greatest run ever. It was toward the rear of the field. And maybe the Sydney Cup for him next year is the race. And no, that's today's job is to do the form for tomorrow. So head to betsy.com.au for all the tips.
Speaker 2Yes, and you do a great job at Betsy, betsy.com.au. Will Elford, you can find all of his tips. You can listen to his podcast with Benny Caluzzi and Nick McWalter as well. Hey, thanks for your time, mate. And Gareth, can you please ask Will, this question's been asked 100 times, so I'll ask it for you, whoever it is, 070. And please ask Will if his mate Stu is the best punter he's ever seen.
Speaker 17Probably the worst.
Speaker 2Okay, there you go. Thanks, mate. Appreciate it. Any time, mate. See you later. There's Will Elford. Time for a break. Bag of tips next.

Speaker 18G'day, Macca. Top of the day, Gareth. Good morning to you. Good morning, everyone. Nice to join you the day after the Cup.
Speaker 2Yeah. Is it the biggest day of the year at Ascot Melbourne Cup Day?
Speaker 18Certainly one thereof. We had nine, I think, nine and a half thousand for Irish Day. Last week. I think the number yesterday was close to 11. Yeah. Which is as nice as it could be on a Tuesday. I think it has been a bit higher from time to time over the years. But that's a great crowd yesterday. So it's certainly up there with the Quokka Day and Railway Stakes Day, Perth Cup Day, of course, as well. But fantastic atmosphere. Crowd were, I think, extraordinary how they embraced the Melbourne Cup. Yeah. The roar across the course when the gates open. You might feel it. But Melbourne, in Melbourne, if you're at Flemington, but it sort of transcends Flemington. It goes everywhere. And the absolute, you know, roof of the grandstand was lifted off of its hinges virtually yesterday with the roar and the crowd. And then when, you know, the horse won the Cup the way that it did, it was just had everyone up on their toes. It was fantastic. Just incredible atmosphere.
Speaker 2Jeez. Mitchell Pavement's got stars. He's got stars everywhere. He looks and he's stable. And Louis Clifton reckons he saw profit motive win the previous start when she flashed down the outside. And this time she just dominated from the front end and never looked like getting beat.
Speaker 18Holly Watson said after the race that it was by accident that she probably led. She was just a bit keen. And she copped a bit of a hit from another horse coming out of the gates, which sparked her. And she jumped to the front, grabbed hold of the bridle, and she allowed it to just go through her. Her rhythm early and work with her and not fight her. And that was something else. That performance, I mean, for a filly having her third lifetime start, what she did yesterday to that field in the Burgess Queen was nothing short of extraordinary. So the sky is the limit for her. And I think that when you look at her as well, Gareth, she's built like a machine. She's almost cult-like with her definition. She's strong and powerful. You can't help but be drawn to her. When she came into the yard, it was the first time I've really had a good look at profit motive. And I thought, well, how did they beat her, certainly on looks alone? And the margin, three legs, could have been six. She turned the ignition off at the 200-meter mark.
Speaker 2She's bloody good.
Speaker 18Beat a good one in treasured legacy. So he has got a very, very smart horse there. He's got a team of very smart horses right at the moment, Mitchell.
Speaker 2Saturday, you've got the list. The Steer Stakes, which is one of the lead-up races to the Railway Stakes. The Faritha Stakes over the 1,400 meters, where we see Roger take on Beatty. And the Lucky Grey Stakes over the 1,800 meters. What race are you looking forward to most, Darren?
Speaker 18The two first ones, La Steer and the Faritha. First of all, a couple of things. Western Empire will go around in the name of Grant Delana Williams on the weekend because they won their stay. And they will have their appeal heard two days after the Railway Stakes. So that'll be on the 23rd of November. That's very important. So we'll see them back in action, which I think is fantastic to see. And at the moment, on appeal and stays, they're three zip. So they're probably, you know, I would think, be quietly confident that the result might go their way. Just on that, Cobb, I've had a bit of commentary coming back to me
Speaker 2and it annoys me a little bit. So I want to clear this up. Yep. Sure. I think, oh, you're sticking up for Grant Delana Gareth because they're your friends and they are being caught cheating and they've got time. And all I say to that is that I only report on the facts. And all of the facts that I thought that were, they were harshly treated, they were stood down compared to other cases around the country. And I think that, and the racing wagering Western Australia stewards were told that they got that wrong during the independent, the independent appeals case to, for them being stood down. And at the end of the day, there's precedents in Tasmania. So you can take that all into consideration, but we just report on the facts at the moment. And obviously they'll have that appeal and they get that stay, which I thought they would always get that stay as well. So yeah, if, if they get found, obviously if they lose that appeal, they get 12 months, whether you agree with it or disagree with it. But please, and at the end of the day, everybody has a job to do, don't they, Darren? But I just thought when, and probably I did, I did stick up for them in a way when I heard the case regarding when they got stood down, I think they shouldn't have been stood down before they had the case being heard. If they're found guilty, they're found guilty. They were found guilty. They've got to stay now. They're appealing it. And then it'd be interesting to see if they win that appeal. There you go.
Speaker 18Yeah. The process now sort of, you know, take its course. And, and when the appeal is heard on the 23rd, we'll all be much the wiser. So everyone from an official capacity is doing their job to the letter of the law, apparently. And, you know, the participant is fighting tooth and nail to continue to be able to train because they don't believe that they were guilty. They were guilty of turning up with a horse, but that's something that applies to every trainer that gets done with a, with a swab. And I think that's a very important part of the process. And having read the evidence comprehensively from all of the experts, international experts, I came away with a view and I've expressed my view. And I think I'll just leave it at that.
Speaker 2Yep. All right. Then can, who wins the Faritha and the Lestia? King of Light, the Western Empire.
Speaker 18The King of Light. He was just outstanding first up with his performance. So he's back in a good shape. in a big way, hot and hot. I, she is just one heck of a mare that's been beaten once now in nine runs, and she's screaming to get to 1,600, probably beyond the way that she races. So she'll come out of next weekend. If she runs, the final acceptances won't be through until a bit later this morning. Watch Me Rock will go there second up, so it's a quality field. And in terms of the Faritha stakes, well, this race between Beatty, Roger, Godspeed, another high-class three-year-old, will just be exceptional. So, yeah, Roger's drawn barrier too. Yeah. And I saw him, I saw a piece of his work with King of Light yesterday.
Speaker 2You love him that much, you're going to track work now, Cobb. That'll be great. That'll do me. No, no, no.
Speaker 18I was shown some vision of their gallop, and there didn't appear to be a lot between them, let me say that. So it was very, very good work. So that's going to be another great clash. Just back to Profit Motive, who dominated them in the Burgess Queen, you know, going to the champion fillies. Now, what they do next with her, it's going to be exciting, regardless, it will be. But there is some sad news to come. The scratching last Saturday of Aurum Bell, who broke clear of a handler. And unfortunately, when she did break clear, she took off, I think it is up Matheson Road, or somewhere in that precinct, and she did a lot of damage. And unfortunately, they couldn't save her. Oh, no. So the supremacy Jim Crack Stakes winner, the filly that ran third in the Caracatta last year, to a fire of Gidgee Coles and Beatty, no longer with us. They paid a lot of money. Sando Walliardo, beautifully bred. And clearly, you know, he was looking towards her being one of his great mayors to go to the barn after her racing days were over. Unfortunately, he has lost her. And the stable are devastated with the events that happened and the fact that she's no longer in their yard. That's devastating thoughts with everyone. Disappointing news for Sando Walliardo and Neville Parnam.
Speaker 2Yeah, and Neville and all of his team, they'll be hurting. That is heartbreaking. I heard that happen. I thought she might be okay, but yeah, that is terrible. They couldn't save her, gee.
Speaker 18Bad news there.
Speaker 2All right, then. Pikey had a double. I've got to go there, Cobb. But they love him. I was walking. I caught up with him at Flemington the other day. He's like Robbie Williams walking through the crowd. Pikey, Pikey, go have a selfie. I said, Jesus, you're a bloody superstar, Pikey. He loves it. Yeah, selfie after selfie, the great man. So there you go. He had a double. Hey, what a good day. Can I just chip in?
Speaker 18Just on. On Pikey. Now, he won the last. That was like Christmas coming early for punters at Ascot because they still had plenty of races to go, but they got him in the last early. Is that cheating? Yeah. Probably. But to win one in the last at Flemington Melbourne Cup, they had $13. Thank you very much indeed. They were all aboard. But the other thing is, of course, there's a strong West Australian influence there yesterday. Peter Walsh, Amelia's affair. Yes, very good. Very impressive with Gee Wooding, the Maribyrdon, a plate for the Nesham's. Off one trial.
Speaker 2Archibald's. Out of dance music. That good man for Simon Wheeler.
Speaker 18Yeah. Yeah, well, dance music was owned by Nev Boddicker. So Walsh, he picked her up and he's going to have some fun with this fella, the way she went. Jeff Evans, of course, owns Beach Pad, who won the Australian Heritage Cup, WA. Pikey on board. And there was a host of owners from the West involved in the Melbourne Cup winner yesterday. Yes. So it was something here that everyone was across, and couldn't believe the influence of the West Australian contingent there with the two-year-old, the stayer, and those in the Cup as well. And W Pike, notwithstanding, with a double on one of our biggest days in racing.
Speaker 2Sensational. Good on you, Darren. Thanks for your time as always, brother. We'll catch up with you next week. Keep on dominating.
Speaker 18I look forward to it, mate. Thanks. Have a great day, Jeff.
Speaker 2Darren McCullough, Adam Hamilton, Jet Turnbull to join me next, and then the weekly chase after that. Time for Facing the Breeze. We missed it last, yesterday, because of Cup Day, all thanks to Gareth's horse and hound, Adam Hamilton joins me.
Speaker 10Hello, Adam. Yeah, Gareth, buzzing. Absolutely buzzing. Great stuff this morning. Johnny O'Neill. People come and go in this game. Johnny's been there as long as I've been. He's been in it and successful and always, always promoting the game. He's bloody fantastic, and it was magic to see that yesterday. A bloke who's, you know, had so many different incarnations, almost, in racing over the years, hasn't he? But, yeah, that was terrific.
Speaker 2Yeah, and it was great to see him celebrate with Hawksy and the boys out the back as well. Yeah, absolutely. He's taken the Cup all around SEN. He was on the Today Show today. Kieran Marr was fascinating today, and Ethan Brown, and even Calvin. Calvin and Troy Causton's Air Insights, and Phil Cunningham on the show. It's been a great show, and now we add you to it, along with this superstar. He's one of my favourites, Jet Turnbull, and he joins us now because he's representing Harness Racing New South Wales in the Australasian Driving Championship that starts tonight in Cambridge, and he's also, with Mick Dummersney and his mates, been given a slot for the Ultimate Drivers' Championship. Unfortunately, he will finish second to Angus Garrow, but we wish him the best of luck, and he joins us now. The young gun from Batman. Mathis. G'day, Jet.
Speaker 19Hey, Gareth. How are you?
Speaker 2What would you prefer to win, the Australasian Driving Championship or the Ultimate Drivers' Championship?
Speaker 19There's definitely not much between them. I'm looking forward to both of them, but representing New South Wales at the moment is pretty special, but to get picked for a big slot race like that next year to drive against international drivers, it'd be pretty special as well.
Speaker 2Adam, how good is he?
Speaker 10Yeah, he's a superstar. I mean, you don't see many people just jump in the sulky at his age and do whatever. He's done, and I think, you know, the thing that's impressed me about Jet, and don't get your ego too big, Jet, but he presents himself really well. He does. So, yeah, he certainly does. Good luck in New Zealand. Great series. I'll see you over there towards the business end of it. Just on that, the other Aussies in it from Victoria, Ryan Sanderson, Geordie Leedham, Jet from New South Wales, Queensland, Lane Dwyer, Tasmania, Geordie Chibnall, WA, Abby Vidovich. And Jason Kittle from South Australia. Good luck to all of them flying the Aussie flag over there. But, Jet, what a buzz for you and all of these young stars to be driving on New Zealand Cup Day when Leap to Fame and Gus are going to be favourites in the two big races.
Speaker 19Yeah, no, it's an absolute honour to even be able to be there on the day, let alone be able to drive on it. But I absolutely cannot wait. It's super exciting, and as you stated, two Aussie superstars there on the day as well to watch. So, honest to God, just cannot wait to get there next Tuesday.
Speaker 2How did you get the slot for the Ultimate Drivers' Championship? Tell us a bit about that story.
Speaker 19It sort of comes as a bit of a surprise. We sort of, a couple of mates from back home, Joel Bastani and Michael Domesey, all sort of really tried their best to, you know, get the slot, and they were successful at it. And when we got that, they told me, and it was pretty special, just to hear that I got it, to be able to go represent, like, my family and everything, just in against, like, other ten best drivers in the world at that time of the year. So, it's sort of, yeah, just all sort of come at once. There was a lot of work behind the scenes, I think, with Joel and Michael doing a lot of work behind the scenes. But I can't thank them enough for it as well. I wouldn't have got the slot without them.
Speaker 10You're probably hearing speculation as well, but on my mail is, we're going to see greater superstar international flavour than we ever have before in this series. Yeah, I'm hearing that. I'm hearing that. Yeah, three of the very, very biggest drivers in the world are about to put pen to paper, I'm told.
Speaker 2And Dexter would come, but he cost you too much, so he can't come back. Is that right?
Speaker 10Yeah, we still, we needed a better result in the Melbourne Cup to be able to try and pay for Dexter to come back.
Speaker 2Hey, Jet, it's something a little bit different, this Ultimate Drivers' Championship. You've got to pick your own horse. You've got to have a good team. You've got a good team behind you, like Angus Garrett has. He's finished first and second the last couple of years. You can win or lose it at the draft on Wednesday. I know you've got some connections with family there, with the butlers in Queensland. Are you going to start doing the Queensland form, or are you going to tell the old man, hey, Dad, just get a team ready to go, and we're going to campaign those horses during the carnival there, or the Ultimate Drivers' Championship on the Friday and the Saturday?
Speaker 19No, you're right. I do know a lot of people. I've got a lot of family up there. As much as I watch races all across Australia, I do really keep an eye on Queensland, just because of the racing and the people. You just sort of sit there and do form. You never know when you're going to race them horses. But, yeah, as you said, there's a lot of people behind me, a lot of people that know what they're doing as well. And, yeah, hopefully on the Wednesday we get a good, nice draft, and fingers crossed it's the right one.
Speaker 10Yeah, you go and give it to the Kiwis over there, mate. Good luck tonight. Get off to a flyer. Cambridge, and I'll look forward to seeing you over there early next week. of course uh james herbertson for victoria won the uh the most recent australian young drivers um 12 months ago 18 months
Speaker 2ago the most like this is don't take this the wrong way jet but i my my favorite driver to watch is your old man when he's in full flight leaning back in the gig he thinks he's um tim teatrick but since you've come come uh come along you've just kicked him off basically he doesn't drive anymore so um there you go when you get to he'll probably have to move closer to sydney jet but he'll probably go to bathurst anyway so well done anyway and you old man he should drive a little bit more but i can understand why he has to be behind you these days jet no he um don't
Speaker 19don't get me wrong whenever he has a drive and beats me in a race he still lets me know he's still got it but um no it is always good to drive against him but at the same time i love jumping on him and letting him fly myself but no it's um it's good to do it with dad he's been there since since the day i started so now um you i'd be nowhere without him and to you know sometimes even be in the same race as him and at all that it's pretty special
Speaker 10that that runs in the blood just quickly your great grandfather uh tony ad turnbull he used to he used to give it to the siblings when uh whenever they uh whenever whenever he'd beat them in the race as well i think he kept them on the toes and made them all better drivers i'm sure you've heard those stories as well mate but fly the flag well in new zealand jet yeah enjoy the trip mate and congratulations at your age for adding another couple of great coups to your career like this
Speaker 19nah same case guys i'll um i'll try and do australia crowd there's jet turnbull good
Speaker 10still on new zealand barrier draws for the new zealand cup and the dominion tonight from about 6 30 australian time let me find that out for you um they're going to be done on the box seat show over in new zealand so i um i'll i'll post some info on my um on my twitter and you can retweet it to all of your listeners as
Speaker 2well captain's mistress good at kai kora
Speaker 10super unbelievable did you see the quote from cam hart if we didn't gallop away we would have won by 30 or 40 meters yeah unbelievable
Speaker 2and then who like i'm alive a kingman in the new zealand cup yeah i
Speaker 10know you are i i'm thinking he's a chance but i still you can't back leap to fame at a dollar no you can't of course you can't at those odds but um like he's the known and kingman you're back to his best um uh eureka picture we're going to know he's more about on saturday night emma stewart taking six up to menengal to try and impress the remaining slot holders there's only
Speaker 2one left isn't there
Speaker 10well four of the ten officially gone but i'm told there's two or three that are still somewhat undecided gareth so saturday night will tell us um tell us plenty more about that so yeah exciting plenty um plenty happening mate but can't wait for those big races in new zealand and just quickly on that you mentioned that you're going to be doing a lot of things in the next couple of weeks i'm going to be doing a lot of things in the next couple of weeks so i'm going to be doing a lot of things in the next couple of weeks but you mentioned captain's mistress yes we there's a genuine chance we finally get this rematch of leap to fame and captain's mistress in the free-for-all on
Speaker 2the friday oh that would be
Speaker 10sensational she's going there so now it's in the in the corner of leap to fame whether they want to back up three days later and take her on they'll back her up yeah they'll back her up if you go well he backs up unbelievably
Speaker 2well doesn't he um and we're going to catch up with you on the means test live monday you're going to be with grant dixon um and then johnny o'neill and wayne hawks will be there as well they want to ask him a few questions
Speaker 10yeah i'm really looking forward to that i know the guys have embraced leap to fame in the new zealand cup and uh can't wait to get over there sunday night
Speaker 2good on you adam thanks for that thanks mate there's adam hamilton 39 minutes past 11 we'll finish off the show plenty to talk about in the greyhound world as well jason adams and georgie to join me join the conversation
Speaker 1text us on 0 4 double 9 7 3 6 7 3 6 live across the australia this is giddy up with gareth hall
Speaker 20time for the weekly chase with jason adams and george ferugia hello to
Speaker 2you georgie g'day gareth how
Speaker 21are you i am well
Speaker 2jason adams hello to you hello g good
Speaker 21to be here and what's a really big week for the sport kicking off the big carnival the top gun on saturday back on racing.com so plenty to be excited about
Speaker 2sensational stuff now tell me this georgie he looks
Speaker 21like his guns blazing today
Speaker 2how long you in the how long have you been in the game for about 30 years i've been in the game for 30 years i've been in the game for 30 years i've been 35 years yeah well respected yeah troy little how long has he been in the game for long time too yeah when i when i asked you both about the fields for the top gun the top gun stays i said should without a trace hasn't won since june should she won one yeah one race one
Speaker 20one her last win in the
Speaker 2city was in may yeah yeah last city win was in may without hesitation you say no troy little says definitely not and she's in the field now she is respected in the market at eight dollars um jason adams can you please tell us why you decided to go with her in the top gun um well it wasn't my
Speaker 21personal decision what was your personal decision or is that confidential no no i'm happy to not go into what my last minute suggestion would have been but i i wasn't happy with her being um in the field because her form is poor and her past handful starts and i wasn't happy with her being out of the field because of she's a reigning greyhound of the year and at what point do they deserve a spot compared to um she's a reigning greyhound of the year and at what point do they um yeah current current form so that was the approach of the panel but clearly you can make a case both ways and and that is a great thing about hand-picked races the top gun in particular best of the best opinions left right and
Speaker 2center what did you just say there
Speaker 21the best of the best
Speaker 2yep she's not in the best eight greyhounds at the moment well that's
Speaker 21your opinion there'll be other people who say well yes she is because she's been arguably the best day or maybe right now is she in the best eight dogs on it if it's if you um you go the last three months past four four starts no way no but at what point does that tip her out of the field i think that i
Speaker 2understand where you're coming from but i think you if it if it's three months without her being in the best dog yeah top eight dogs in the country i think that's long enough for greyhound racing
Speaker 20isn't it yeah i think there's a little bit of a statue of limitations here in terms of i i was saying to jason off here i think if she was out of form for one or two months that's okay yeah but i think it's been a a fair while but look look the field's
Speaker 21been picked now and and and that's fine and and don't think don't think it was one way traffic of her going in either it was almost toss of the coin you should have filmed this right decision or not you should
Speaker 2have filmed it i think it's great debate and you know what she'll probably go up she'll go out and win now a bit like um when lucky walked past the sky racing team there when it loves the story
Speaker 21yeah yeah he goes you got no idea stick that up
Speaker 2yeah and i love that look just i said lucky wasn't it i had nothing
Speaker 20to do with it had a really good honest frank conversation with darren pullio the the owner of without a trace and um he
Speaker 2agree or disagree
Speaker 20with you um no he understand my point of view but he yeah i mean she's in the field now i think she's if if she doesn't finish in the top three jace i think it might be the last time we see her i think you get
Speaker 21the feeling it's her career is hanging by a thread
Speaker 20yeah it's it's really close so look as i said to him before i hung we hung up i'm happy to have egg in my face if she was to win this but it would have to be a astronomical change in in form to what we've seen for a long time
Speaker 21it's clearly not physical with her she's ready because she's she trialed what we'd
Speaker 20expect she trialed she run home really well in
Speaker 21the years which then opens up the possibility that she could go berserk on saturday night so and who knows but it's all great discussion it's
Speaker 2great discussion it's great like if this show we get people on all all throughout the morning hawksy and johnny o'neill and calvin and troy and they're going to have strong opinions and sometimes you're going to have egg on your face and sometimes you're going to get it right like i said to will born when he was on this show you're kidding yourself buying that horse point of law off the king and johnny godson and like i was wrong and he was
Speaker 20right no that's fine the other issue she she has gareth is that she's going up against a stayer who is absolutely white hot right now i mean magpie hector broke a track record the start before he nearly broke the track record beating the best days in the country in the sydney cup he's come up with box three jays which i think probably suits him there's a little bit of speed in one and two but if he gets to sit behind him he'd be hard to beat miss envy at her best has been unbeatable at this distance the issue i have with her guys is that she's had one start in essentially two months so it's it's a tale of two preparations i mean um magpie hector is going in absolutely at the peak of his powers where there's no doubt she won't be absolutely 100 percent gareth and that's why you're getting yeah five dollars five dollars even six dollars with some betting agencies so what's your thoughts on that jace with miss envy i mean is it a case of the unknown can she overcome that because of her
Speaker 21brilliance it's tricky oh look i think steve has proven that when he can time his run with her she can she can perform the nationals being a good example of that and that's we've still got a small sample size of her form over 700 meters don't we so yeah um yeah there's probably not that rock solid reliability and that's not her fault that's not steve's fault it's just the way they've prepared her and the way the market approaches her chances of winning the race and the depth of the a big role to play in the price she's been put up at can you
Speaker 2take three dollars wrongly accused from box ace in the final or in the top
Speaker 20gun sprints yeah look
Speaker 2i went
Speaker 20straight for value here gareth i'm a huge storm hustler fan and i know he got beaten on monday running second in the silver bullet but they're offering 12 about this great in some markets i think that's just insane for me the one thing that we'd like to see gareth and we had a couple of people on our podcast say can jungle johnny please draw Well, he has, he's drawn. Well, the only thing I'll say about that though. He's still going to have a lot of bums in front of him, Jase. I think there's a lot of speed drawn around him. He's still going to have to get his way around.
Speaker 21And there's still a monkey on him, despite how good he's been. There's still a monkey on his back of winning a major and performing here in Victoria. Especially here in Victoria. It was good last year, but now he gets an opportunity.
Speaker 2Is pound keeping lead or does Kenya Talk now cross?
Speaker 20Yeah, I would doubt. I would say that she's going to have some severe pressure on that first corner. And even if you throw in off the chart, who's not a fence crasher, but he's going to be putting the heat on. Or Kenya Mayhem. That's what I mean. I mean, it's one of those races where two of the three outsiders, a Storm Hustler and Kenya Mayhem, who I think I give big chances to for both of those greyhounds at their best. There's no doubt about that. Nervous if I'm sports bad. I'm really nervous.
Speaker 2You don't want another failure by your Phoenix dog, do you really?
Speaker 21What are your thoughts here from the pink guy?
Speaker 2I'll take him on every day of the week. He's got to have.
Speaker 21You've got your mind made up based on missing him from an SEN point of view. No, but you know what?
Speaker 2At the moment, I think that like. He's finding too much trouble, isn't he? And if he doesn't find trouble, he's a superstar. He's the best dog in the race and he wins. But when there's eight dogs and you're not quick out and you've got to try and manoeuvre your way through, more times than not, you're going to find trouble, aren't you? Is that fair?
Speaker 20I agree with you. I think it's. I wouldn't be taking $3. Can you just clearly see pros and cons from this box draw, Jason? No, Jason loves him.
Speaker 21There's more cons than pros. Yeah, I love him. Yeah. But. Yeah. As favourite in a field like this from the draw, I might be tipping him. Yeah. No. Yeah.
Speaker 20Stop the press. There you go. The X factor is Anthony's dog. Can you talk now? Yeah. And what he can do to the first 100 metres.
Speaker 21We've spoken about wrongly accused a lot. He's not going to go. Well, he can go five seconds flat, but from this draw, crossing six other dogs who can do the same thing. Yeah. Bloody hard work. Yeah. It's really hard.
Speaker 2Unless he gets some luck and he jumps over them, but that's unlikely. It's 50 minutes past 10. Oh, we've got no breaks yet. That's a good point, Gareth. I thought I knew that. The Hume Cuffs also on Saturday night over the 600 metres. Mark it here. Good little race, as you would expect in this group one. House of Sins, box 8, 330. Gemma Keeping, 380. Vista Weird, 480. No stop sign, 650. I always like backing the inside dogs because I think the turn comes up pretty quick. And it's difficult out wide at times.
Speaker 20Yeah. If you had to pick a top gun for 600 metres, House of Sins. House of Sins would be one of the first picked. His last, what, Jase, two or three months has been elite in Victoria. And he went 3408, which is starting to get into the elite territory last week. My concern is exactly what you mentioned there, Gareth, the box draw. Yeah. And the speed in this race to the first corner. He can sometimes get camped out wide a little bit too much. And some greyhounds are often gone. And for that reason, I think the greyhounds draw in boxes two and three. Vista Weird and Gemma Keeping are at a distinct advantage here. If they can get the start right. That's my only concern with House of Sins. If you can get past that first corner, Jason, obviously he's the dog to beat.
Speaker 21Yeah. I can't see this race being that clean early at all. I mean, Blue Storm's a machine in his own right. He likes to leave room on the fence. Hurricane in six. We'll want to get down towards the rails. So I think Gemma Keeping is hitting this series at a fantastic time. She's got good form. The draw looks to be quite suitable. There's very limited things to be concerned about, in my opinion, with her. Brad says Vista Weird has got to be a great hope.
Speaker 20Oh, absolutely. What do you think the Ennis team would be thinking? What did I do to deserve this? Drawing box four, five and six.
Speaker 21Yeah. And the wrong way around. I mean, they wouldn't have minded Hurricane in four and Blue Storm in six, but hasn't worked out that way.
Speaker 20The speed in seven is a concern I think can be problematic for the eight, Gareth, especially if it can begin like it.
Speaker 2And that bend, you go to the meadows. It's a bit like you have in harness racing and the gallops, different starting points. Yeah. It's nearly impossible to lead from box eight unless you get the absolute fly, because by the time, it's hard to build momentum because they're turning. And even if you miss it from one slightly, you can nearly kick up and lead.
Speaker 20Yeah. And you almost need some help from greyhounds drawn inside of you that want to try to cut in a little bit too early. And it gives you that extra boost, but, uh, yeah, interesting race that one.
Speaker 21So they're the three group ones this Saturday night, Gareth, for Top Gun night. As an SEN representative, building up towards the Phoenix. Do you know if there's any internal discussions about a shortlist or anything like that that you're concentrating on this weekend?
Speaker 20I think we'll wait after the Melbourne Cup. Until the Melbourne Cup. That's why I think the X factor is, can you talk now? Because if he leads all the way in this field and runs 29.60, I don't think he'll last long, um, of being a greyhound that's not attached to a team.
Speaker 2And it's barrier, like it's box draw as well. Like you need a little bit of luck. Like you could get the best dog and draw eight and then you got no chance. But if you get Jungle Johnny at a great price and he draws box one, all of a sudden he's nearly the dog to be.
Speaker 20You give him a hope on Saturday, Jungle Johnny?
Speaker 2Um, yeah, from box two. Yeah. The real Jungle Johnny turns up. He was woeful in the million dollar chase. If that's fair, isn't it?
Speaker 20Well, again, it's just, yeah, box draw dependent with him, but, uh.
Speaker 2Yeah. Oh, he did get knocked at the start, didn't he, in the million dollar chase? It was a weird million dollar chase.
Speaker 20But to Jason's point, we haven't seen, uh, the 1A version of Jungle Johnny at any stage in Melbourne. Uh, so I'm sure Connections would love that.
Speaker 2Laurel Heats there tomorrow night. Um, you get some terrific dogs going around. It's here. These female dogs will be going around. Um, have you got any tips there, Georgie? You like anything?
Speaker 20Yeah, I do. There's a couple that we like. We'll go through them. We always like those ones, Gareth, that have been racing in open company and then they come back to their own age and sex. And for that reason, I think race four, number three, little monkeys must be considered, uh, in a series like this. Uh, I think race seven, number five shows promise. We talk about bloodlines. I mean, we've mentioned Georgia Cole, the daughter of Lisa and Brendan Cole. Absolutely dominated New Zealand racing for a while. And she's learned from the best and she has absolutely hit the ground running, Jase, hasn't she, as a trainer here? Shows promise, defeated, won a Melbourne Cup prelude last week, defeating poor Oswald. Comes back against her own age and sex will be tough to beat race seven, number five. There's a couple I like later in the program. Gareth, race nine, number one, General Frankie and race 10, number three, Paul Winder. Gets a little bit of luck on that first corner, Jase. I think his last month of racing has been outstanding.
Speaker 2Good to see the number one hairdresser in Gareth. Bro, I'm racing Ian Garland, build up a team. How's Johnny, Johnny from Epping going?
Speaker 20I seen that run. Did that run recently?
Speaker 21I think debuted at Healesville. Yeah. It was green, but I think that's the way she's, um, she's a straight dog. That's what she's shown to this point in time. So hopefully she can turn it around because.
Speaker 2He can be critical Johnny from Epping as well. Well, like a good luck. Are you, have you in the gun?
Speaker 21Yeah. Well, I'm looking at one of her sisters now called Serge. She lines up in a Laurel seat tomorrow night and she goes well. So very fast. Great. I'd be dirty then Johnny.
Speaker 2I've been given the wrong dog in the litter.
Speaker 20I'll tell you what. The other thing, Gareth, is there was a lot of great publicity around that Irish dog that won last week at Sandown Park and it got all the way back to, to, to Ireland. And, and they, uh, there's a real big following for a couple of these greyhounds. A few of them are in tomorrow night at Sandown Park again. So a couple of them show some ability. Can't wait for them.
Speaker 2All right. Then boys, what about some tips tomorrow night at Sandown?
Speaker 20I gave them.
Speaker 2No, have you got any others outside the Laurels?
Speaker 20No, I gave the four. Yeah. Yeah. Race, race nine. Number one, race 10, number three outside the Laurels. Um, what else have you got for us? Anything else? Um, I like little monkey race four, number three, and also race seven, number five, uh,
Speaker 21shows. And he's got a dog in a big race in Queensland tomorrow night as well.
Speaker 20Yeah. Tempting Dash is in a big race there tomorrow night. Yeah. Hopefully she goes well.
Speaker 2And this is the start of the dream chases, the top gun.
Speaker 21This Saturday night. Yeah. First of four big nights. And on racing.com. On racing.com. Um, this Saturday. So obviously it kicks off with the top. Done. We then get into the Melbourne cup series, heat and final and culminates with the Phoenix in, in early December.
Speaker 2Did we get to see you on racing.com?
Speaker 21Yes. I'll be chewing the fat with the participants.
Speaker 2Oh yeah. That's the most important job there. I think in any broadcast.
Speaker 21It's not easy as you know, the information out sometimes.
Speaker 2Yeah. But I think, um, that makes the coverage. If you've got a good operator talking to the participants and Jason Adams is the perfect. Yep. What do you want?
Speaker 21Have fun with them or get information?
Speaker 2Well, you want information, but you want to have that ability to get them to open up and trust you. And then. And to tell you information that they probably wouldn't tell. And you're very good at that. Some of them are way too serious. Yeah. The trainers might go harder than
Speaker 21we've ever gone this year.
Speaker 2Are you, are you on the show? Um, Saturday night. No, I'm not on the show. This is George. Yeah. I don't know how you missed out. I would have. It's not a non-selection.
Speaker 20I, um, no, I couldn't make it. Oh, there you go. But the week after I'm seeing his mind tick over in regards to this Phoenix slot. As soon as we mentioned, can you talk now? I think there's going to be. No, that's why I was.
Speaker 2Calls made. I was texting while you were talking.
Speaker 20I thought so.
Speaker 2I've got to get the deals done. Anthony has a part in and come on the show last week. So I don't know. He sort of like, he did say he'll come on this week.
Speaker 21Check that second text message for me, please.
Speaker 2Yes. Um, great chat lads. Don't know if you know, Gareth, but I don't know if you know, Gareth, but Jace was a talented footballer back in the day. Very Nick Davis, like in his days at the Springvale districts football club. Look at the smile on his face.
Speaker 21Oh, you're good. You can argue a bit of both, Georgie.
Speaker 2I would love to go with Anthony as a party. Great entertainer. A lot of fun lads. Bring on Saturday night. Miss Envy. We might get your tips on Friday for that big meeting, but Miss Envy. She gets up at $5. You are going to blow Twitter up. Magpie Hector who? Good on you boys. Have a great day. That's giddy up.

Summary:

FAQs

Point of Law, trained by Kieran Maher and ridden by Ethan Brown, won the Melbourne Cup.

He became the first trainer to trifecta the Melbourne Cup, with his horses finishing first, second, and third. He had seven runners, and six finished in the top ten.

Asterix was scratched on stewards' orders after being treated with a liniment on race day, which is not permitted. It was described as an honest mistake by a stable staff member.

Racing Victoria stewards found syringes containing EPO in his car during a stable raid on Derby day. He did not attend the inquiry, and his license was suspended pending serious charges.

Point of Law led at Geelong but settled further back in the Melbourne Cup. He ran the fastest final furlong of the day to win, showing his versatility and class.

Eileen Maher reportedly wrote to King Charles and Queen Camilla, which helped secure the deal to buy the horse from the King.
