Speaker 1- The Quarter Pounder with Cheese is made with 100% fresh beef, cooked when you order it. Then comes the melted cheese, the slivered onions, the pickles, the ketchup, and the mustard. Add hot crispy fries and an iced cold Coke, all for $8. And if things go well, one loose fry at the bottom of the bag. The Quarter Pounder with Cheese meal, now $8. ♪

Speaker 4Yes, good morning. This is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall on this Tuesday. It's the 3rd of November. It's a big hello to you listening on your local SCN track and RSA 927 dials. Wherever you may be. You may be listening on the RSA and SCN apps. If you're listening to us a little later on in the podcast, hello to you. And of course, watching us on racing.com. Well, it's racing's biggest day for the sports greatest show. The Melbourne Cup is the race that stops the nation. It's the race that changes lives. And this year, as there always is, there are stories that are set to inspire a nation. Harry Coffey is the biggest one of those stories. He was born with cystic fibrosis and he's overcome adversity all of his life. And this afternoon, he rides in the Melbourne Cup three days after breaking his collarbone. Many of us, including myself, believed his Melbourne Cup dream aboard one of the favourites and chocolates was shattered. But this is Harry Coffey. He's been doing this all of his life, proving the impossible is possible. Legendary owner, JP McManus, the self-made billionaire from Limerick and Ireland, one of the biggest names in world racing, gambled his heart out at yesterday's call of the card. He owns two horses in this year's race as he chases his cup dream in Trust Your Instinct and Goody Two-Shoes. But his biggest gamble was on one of his rivals yesterday at the call of the card. - I'm on my way down to this orchard.
Speaker 5It's still the important way down, so we're thinking, my train break has to be record. I need to spend dollars in the morning. -
Speaker 6Oh, geez! You didn't even know I was sick. It's a week. I'm not going off. Oh, I'll take another hour. So you just heard there, well, I think you
Speaker 4heard it anyway. He had a million dollars at 10 to 1 on the UK Gallop at Hopewell Rock. The call of the card was beautiful viewing. JP was the star of the show and Hopewell Rock is now the favourite with bet 365 at $7.50. Happy Melbourne Cup Day. This is Giddy Up on this first Tuesday, November, and we have you covered as we try and find you the winner in our great race. Giddy Up's stable mail will be led by one of the world's greatest trainers and Joseph O'Brien. One of the rising stars in world racing, George Bowie, will also join us. Of course, he trains Hopewell Rock. Kira Maher's got seven runners in this year's Melbourne Cup, including a horse that his mum will help get the deal done. Back in June, when she headed to Royal Ascot to have lunch with the king, of course, point of law was the horse formerly owned by the king, now owned by the connections of Kira Maher. And he was replaced as the favourite yesterday after the call of the card as Hopewell Rock was heavily supported. So looking forward to catching up with Kira. And he also, of course, trains chocolates. Graham Begg will join us. We'll also catch up with Bjorn Baker. Looking forward to that. And then after nine o'clock, it's the Hunter's Edge. So Mark Hunter will join us for a special Hunter's Edge on this first Tuesday, November. He is ready to go. We'll analyse the Melbourne Cup in detail with Mark. Plus, we'll try and find you a few other winners there on this big card there at Flemington this afternoon. It's three minutes past eight. Before we get stuck into the stable mail, this is what Liam O'Keefe had to say this morning with Lizzie Jelves and Maddy Nevitt updating us on it. After a bit of rain overnight, this is Liam O'Keefe talking to the team this morning on RSN 927.
Speaker 7You're on a soft five this morning. We received 7.4 millimetres of rainfall yesterday and this morning. And that takes us to a total of 19.2 millimetres for the week. So soft five. Weather's just starting to clear out here now. Just a little bit of light drizzle at the moment. I think if we get some breeze and sun maybe later on, it's a very, very long day, Melbourne Cup day. So quite often the horses will get into the track a little bit early, but then it can dry out late. Because if you look at the cup, there's like an hour before, an hour after. Whether it gets to a four or not, I'm not sure, but I think it'll be a five that will just slightly improve as the day progresses.
Speaker 4So there's Liam O'Keefe. Looks like we'll be on a soft five, I reckon, by the time we get to the Melbourne Cup. Joseph O'Brien is in his early thirties. He's already won a couple of Melbourne Cups. He's got a big team engaged. This afternoon and the champion trainer joins us. Joseph, welcome back to Australia. Thanks for joining us on Giddy Up. How's things? Yeah,
Speaker 8very good, Garrett. Good morning. And thanks for having me.
Speaker 4Did you get your luggage in the end?
Speaker 8Yeah, he did. Thank you. Thank you. Yeah, everything, everything got sorted last night and we're looking forward to today.
Speaker 4You happy with the track conditions after just listening to Liam O'Keefe there?
Speaker 8Yeah, absolutely. Obviously it dries out very quick here. So I reckon it'll be beautiful.
Speaker 4We'll start off with the top weight Sons and Lovers. He was very good the other day at his last run in Ireland before he came out to Australia. He's got to carry 57 and a half. Is he good enough to carry that weight and win our race?
Speaker 8I don't think we'll see later, but he's had a very good preparation. We think that the course and distance and you know, the attributes that you need for the race, we think he has. Obviously he has a lot of weight, but that's because he's had, you know, a couple of big performances this year. So we're looking forward to this afternoon with him. Where do you think you'll land from that gate? I somewhere in the first third of the field probably and Dylan can decide really, you know, after a furling or so where he wants to be.
Speaker 4Yeah. Trust your instinct. He's owned by JP McManus, James McDonnell rides. Um, he's got a, um, obviously he's got a terrific turn of foot. We've seen that on occasions there in, in Ireland, in the UK, um, from gate eight, 18. Is that a tricky guy for him?
Speaker 8Well, listen, uh, obviously I saw yesterday as James said, he, um, he's been lucky enough from gate 18 in the past. So, um, um, you know, at the draw is what it is, what it is. Um, and really we focus on the things that we can control and that, and that is the horse. And, um, he's come through, um, everything and where it be, um, as, as we would like, like, like him to, um, uh, Michael and the team are very happy with him there. And, um, um, we think he's, we think he's taken to everything very well.
Speaker 4It sounds like this has been a plan for a long time with this horse to get him here for this first Tuesday,
Speaker 8November. Yeah. Well, I think when he had a good season, um, uh, when he had a good season, uh, this summer, um, and he won the current cup, you know, it wasn't, it was an obvious race to target from there. Are you concerned about the two miles with him? No, I'm not. No. Um, and what about the ground? He's, he's very versatile ground wise. Um, the soft five here is probably like good ground at home. So, um, um, I, I wouldn't have any concerns with that. All right then.
Speaker 4And goody two shoes who races in the same colors. Is she better than she was last year when she finished second?
Speaker 8Yeah. Well, her form is, uh, she ran a career best, um, uh, two starts back. Um, last time, um, it was proper Irish soft and it's not really her, but we had to, we had to get another run into her before she went into the quarantine. Um, so happy to put a line through that run. Uh, she draws one gate different than what she had last year. And if she gets a good trip around and a smooth passage, like she did last year, um, I could see her being involved with the business end again. Is she one horse that probably prefers a good track or you think she'll still be
Speaker 4at her best on say a soft five?
Speaker 8Uh, she's no, she is best on, on faster ground. Um, um, but it's time to be corrected, but I think it was similar to say last year and she coped with that fine.
Speaker 4And then James J Braddock, he's got a tough, tough guy to overcome. Um, but he looks a progressive type there. Um, Joseph, what do you make of his chances?
Speaker 8Yeah, he is. And, um, probably the gate, you know, it's probably hardest on him of all of them. Um, um, but Craig Williams obviously is, is, is, is a great man to have on board. Um, again, we think the horse is taken to where it'd be and, and the routine over the last number of weeks very well. So, um, um, hopefully he can get a nice spot somewhere and, um, and then, and then that will give him every chance. He seems to be the X factor out of your team here this afternoon. Um, I guess he's probably the least exposed given that he's a three-year-old and he obviously has the, has the lightest weight. um um so so i think i think that
Speaker 4that is a fair comment yeah um and what do you think you'll do from the draw to go back or forward or you just leave that up to craig yeah we'll leave it up to
Speaker 8craig i have to discuss the race and the horse with him yeah um and then um you know i'm sure he'll have a plan um for
Speaker 4today and kisly wasn't in the field until saturday morning um they probably went too slow for him there in the mooney valley cup on cox plate day um can he surprise
Speaker 8yeah listen we didn't get to see his show running the other day that's for sure um um going out in distance would definitely be a big help to him um and uh i could see him running well but but obviously his first stop here wasn't wasn't very good so um if he can take a step back to his summer form um he'll be competitive um but he does need to jump back to that form but we do think that going out and trip will definitely
Speaker 4help him and do you ride him like he's the best stayer in the race and put him right into the contest and keep on running
Speaker 8i think he'd be ridden positively from the gate again i have to discuss it with bob but but yeah you know he is a horse that has plenty
Speaker 4of stamina it's been a race it's been um so great to you joseph what's it mean for you to come back here and try and win a melbourne cup especially for these different connections and jp mcmahon as he was fun to watch at yesterday's call of the card should we be worried that he backed one of his um rivals instead of his own horses this afternoon
Speaker 8i think he backed both of his own horses this afternoon i think he backed both of his own horses as well yeah um um no he he he definitely backed both horses as well so um but but listen jp um has been a great supporter of mine over yeah uh basically since i started training and um um he he's good friends with with lloyd williams and nick williams and uh um you know it's really it's really special for him for him to be here and it's very special for me that that he's made the effort to come down and uh of course it's a hugely prestigious race and um um everybody is really you know uh embraced the the last few days and um we're looking for looking forward to this
Speaker 4afternoon because he is a legend isn't he back home jp mcmahon he's obviously um had so many superstar jumpers in the national hunt game in ireland and england but um he is one of the biggest names in world racing especially in his home country of ireland and um across there in england as well
Speaker 8yeah um um absolutely um you know obviously jp is a huge bunch of national hunt horses and the majority of his flat string are homebreds and these are our two homebreds um um you know by himself and noreen and and family and the team in martinstown um so i think the fact that they're both homebreds um adds a little adds a little bit of um pride um to them and uh he's really enjoyed the journey with them they're both horses have won on the flat and over jumps um and so i think it's a really good race and i think it's a really good race and um but they've been at their best obviously and stay in black races and you got
Speaker 4five horses in this year's melbourne cup and it's not just for the big irish owners that you're training for um a lot of the australian owners the big australian owners have given you an opportunity to try and uh to win a melbourne cup and you you seem to train for a lot of australians these days joseph as well yeah
Speaker 8it's a we do and we're very lucky to have have the support of a lot of the big groups um obviously defiantly for the jamie and the australian bloodstock team uh was an unlucky scratch uh this week and yeah i think small fry for terry henderson and the oti team was uh pretty live in there um and but but obviously we didn't make the field so so um we just just missed out so so there are two horses that i'm sure we'll be hearing plenty of um in the future and we're very lucky to have the team of the support of of some some great teams
Speaker 4what makes what makes the what what kind of horse do you need in your eyes to win a melbourne cup joseph
Speaker 8you just need the goods there and you need to have a good trip on the day uh gareth so i guess no different than you know a lot of big races where you have big fields you need you need to be in the right spot and you need things to set up right for you um um and um you know hopefully given that we have a few in there um you can set up set up really good for one of them have you seen any
Speaker 4of the horses yet since you've arrived yeah
Speaker 8no they're all they all look great and the guys are really happy with them and have been all the time and they're all really happy with them and they're over the last number of weeks so um
Speaker 4um yeah how are you feeling you've been to america there over the weekend for the breeders cup weekend and you make the flight and you've done it on numerous occasions now but you come to melbourne are you holding up okay
Speaker 8yeah um everything is everything is great um um i had a good sleep last night uh stayed awake stayed awake all day so i've got a good sleep last night and now looking forward heading out
Speaker 4to the track do you know what we do on this show joseph um when i have the trainers on for giddy up stable mail so if i gave you a hundred bucks joseph australian dollars of course what would you do with it um can i wait can i wait
Speaker 8until they're passing the winning post the first time no you're gonna tell us before i'd like i'd like to see where they end up and that'd be an idea but listen we have we have some live shots and it's really we're really lucky to have um uh you know in a race like the melbourne cup um um is a real is a real privilege for us just to be competing here you know and obviously we we do come here to win um but we're we're also here to enjoy um the process and uh the journey and and this is gonna be great if anything could win today
Speaker 4yeah all right then i'm just gonna have a hundred on james j brady for you there joseph i wish you the best of luck mate um thanks thanks for your time mate and uh you go and get them and win your third melbourne cup but it's great to have you back in this country and enjoy um this afternoon at flemington all right thanks gary appreciate it and good luck out there there's the champion trainer joseph o'brien it's 15 minutes past eight we'll take a break george bowie will be our special guest next we get set for the melbourne cup george bowie's about to join us i think he's ready to go george he's of course trains hopewell rock who is now the favorite for the lexus melbourne cup after he was heavily supported at yesterday's call of the car george bowie is one of the rising stars in the training ranks he's one of the best trainers now in the uk he's based at new market he's got a lot of friends in australia he spent some time in this country as well but he's friends with a lot of the the younger trainers in this country as well so um he would be eager to win a melbourne cup this afternoon of course he won a breeders cup there on the weekend in the united states and he joins us now the trainer of hopewell rock george thanks very much for joining us on giddy up
Speaker 9pleasure no worries um how
Speaker 4are you going mate they tell me that you've got a lot of
Speaker 9luggage as well yeah it's been a bit of a whirlwind um 24 hours but luckily it arrived late last night and we're um we're ready to go again you got
Speaker 4a lot of friends in this country
Speaker 9uh yeah look we spent a bit of time down here a while ago and um nice to be back for sure
Speaker 4yep tell us a little bit about hopewell rock and why can he win the melbourne cup today
Speaker 9i think um look he's a horse who we've been kind of programming around this race for a while even before he's bought by wasnan and um i think he'll stay the two miles which is a big thing i know he hasn't run it yet but um look he's a he's a horse who's bred to stay and um yeah he looks quite unexposed
Speaker 4still he had a wonderful season in europe he was close in an ebor um and then obviously you you sent him to australia you hadn't yet quite snuck into the field and you had to wait until i think friday or saturday before you got the the the tick that you actually had made the field um so has it been the plan all along to to try and sneak into the race and eventually you're able to do that there um late last week
Speaker 9yeah it was um like it was something that after the evil we sat down and sort of spoke about it he could have could have come for a prep run but look the vlc and everyone down here were pretty confident that he'd get in and i think to win a race like this you you know if you've got a bit in hand it can only help so uh yeah it's a sweaty few days when he didn't look like he was going to get in but um i think that will probably probably help him going forward
Speaker 4is the two miles the big plus for him you think this afternoon i think
Speaker 9so um look if he if he relaxes early which i don't see any reason why he won't he's a horse who you know he's he's a big galloper really at the end of the day and um yeah i'm so looking forward to seeing him up at two miles for sure
Speaker 4yeah and do you think he'll enjoy the hustle a bustle of a melbourne cap well that
Speaker 9was that was the one question mark going into the evil you know he'd never obviously he ran at royal ascot and he just wasn't quite right that day but um goodwood into york in big field handicaps he just looked to really thrive and um ryan moore got off him at goodwood and just said he's made for a melbourne cup so um yeah look i hope so it's you never really know it's a big occasion and if he does handle it i think um i think he could thrive in the big field what do you think about that i think it's a good thing i think it's a good thing and i
Speaker 4think it's a good thing and i think it's a good thing and i think it's a good thing and i think he's perfect ground i i always
Speaker 9thought he wanted a bit of slower ground so okay the fact that we have had a bit of rain probably helps um i actually thought he'd win last november i thought he was very well handicapped and he was just so culty at doncaster in the november handicap and it looks like a bit of a blot on his form on heavy ground there but go back to a two-year-old form and you know he's a winner on slow ground so um he's pretty versatile
Speaker 4are you happy with gate 15.
Speaker 9it was probably the top end of where we wanted to be but um i think so yeah i i didn't want want to be too low because i don't want to be driving forward and getting into a sort of pace dual i'd like to just see him float around halfway back that sort of thing and um kind of going to
Speaker 4leave it up to zach really yeah and you team up with one of the brightest young stars i think in world racing these days i think he proved that zach lloyd when he went to europe during our winter months and he's had one hell of a season he's leading james mcdonald and the jockeys premiership in sydney um and he arrives in melbourne full of confidence mate um so how did you come about in choosing zach to ride hopewell rock for wathan racing this
Speaker 9afternoon zach's um pretty good friend of my stable rider back home billy locknown and yeah um it was kind of i actually said to billy what does that do in the winter in australia and he said not much i think so um he came over to newmarket in the summer and ended up sitting on a rylasker winner so that kind of sort of started the relationship and um look i i think zach is an unbelievably talented rider and you know he he just is able to handle the big day and um able to do the weight as well look james um doyle wasn't ever going to be able to do it so we were pretty keen to get him locked down nice and early and um yeah looking forward to getting him on the horse and what
Speaker 4impressed you most when you saw zach um in europe and he spent some time there
Speaker 9at newmarket he actually rode a horse in um in a mile and a half three-year-old handicap asker who's keen and you know just over races and he was able to get him to switch off and um i think the more that he comes over to europe the more he'll sort of mold himself into you know that james mcdonald style rider james looks very european when he rides over in the northern hemisphere and um yeah he's just like billy back home he's got a unbelievably relaxed nature about him and i think for the big occasion that's just so key
Speaker 4with george bowie here on giddy up of course the trainer of now the favorite for the melbourne cup this afternoon and hope well rock with bet 365 hey um george we're watching from afar obviously as you point out you spent a little bit of time in australia and you've got some great friends here in this country but your rise has been terrific to watch and in a sport especially in the uk it's you don't see that too often you've got the established trainers that have been around for a long while and have had great support from some of the biggest say breeders and well racing but you've been able to come from um nowhere in a way now take on the world's best trainers and be one of the the biggest stars in england um you must be super proud with the job that you've been able to do in a short amount of time
Speaker 9yeah it's um i don't think being here with the favorite for melbourne cup was in our 10 15 year plan let alone as early as we've been able to do it but um we've been able to get hold of some good horses from you know some good people and i think fundamentally you need the the people behind you to be able to do it and we've got a great team of horses great team of people back home and to have had a breeders cup winner and be down here is yeah it's beyond my wildest dreams really but um it's the direction we want to go and um hopefully we can keep going that
Speaker 4way and you've had a big season bo echo he had a wonderful time of it before he was retired so it has been a dream year mate what would it be what would it mean to you to win our greatest race look bo
Speaker 9echo was unreal he took all before him an unbeaten sort of champion really but as you know in this game it kind of slips you by quickly and it feels like a long time ago so um yeah the melbourne cup is is huge isn't it you know i i think having worked down here you kind of appreciate a bit more than the guys do back home and um even just in the hotel here everyone's sort of buzzing about it and um yeah it would be massive and i think for wathman as well their first runner in in australia to to be favorite now is um it's pretty cool but look he comes here with a pretty good profile and i think as as everyone knows you just kind of need to get a smooth run around really and um then it's over to zach and
Speaker 4the horse were you surprised how much money came for him yesterday at the call of the cart
Speaker 9i think um though jp and paul burn are pretty sharp back home and um he does look like an unexposed horse and um i was surprised that he was the horse to break the record for sure but i thought there'd be a few punters getting on and um i think he's sort of six dollars back home now which is um probably as short as he wants to go but um with jp's support that often happens
Speaker 4and the last question before we let you go george who do you think the horse to beat is
Speaker 9um oh look it's tough i actually like trust your instincts i think um he's got a little bit wider gate than we have but you know rock solid horse and um joseph knows how to win this race i i think i think he's probably the one
Speaker 4all right mate it's great to have you in this country um congratulations on the year that you've had in 2026 it is a year to remember um and you might be able just to cap it off with the melbourne cup with the favorite now hope well rock thanks for joining us on giddy up and the best of luck this afternoon super
Speaker 9thanks so much take care there's
Speaker 4george bowie there we're going to take a break on the other side of it we'll catch up with our champion trainer kieran ma welcome back to giddy up giddy up as always brought to you by bet 365 it's never ordinary when it's brought to you by bet 365 what's gambling really costing you for free and confidential support visit gamblinghelponline.org.au you got that six horse challenge today that you can play with bet 365 you just need to go to your account go to the home page and you can play the challenge there's a chance that you could win a hundred thousand dollars if you get all six right and it is free to play and if you only get four or five there is a chance that as well that you'll get a pretty handy dividend so that's the six horse challenge and the giddy up weekend preview top four multi is in operation as we speak it's always the best value we landed the weekend preview top four multi on saturday um when it did open there on that thursday paid around nine dollars and today um we have the multi at around five dollars thirty five cabuccio and race one at ranwick ole go race four at flemington and then buckloo race 10 at flemington and enamorada race 10 at ranwick as well so that is the giddy up weekend preview top four multi just go to the giddy up home page log into your account and that will be the best value that you'll get all day um always great to catch up with bjorn baker in this game great game in my opinion that we need entertainers we need characters in the sport and bjorn baker is one of those he's been terrific all spring with the way that he has entertained um the racing fans on and off the track and the great man joins us here on giddy up on this tuesday morning this is the last time i'll say any nice words about you bjorn but i appreciate you coming on a melbourne cup day hello to you yeah
Speaker 10thanks for having me on gareth and uh what a week what a spectacle i did uh an amazing day yesterday to the call of the card and uh it's all happening so not i said it's a race that stops two nations um a lot of people will be watching from new zealand and worldwide and you've only got to look at the horses the jockeys where they've come from yeah uh you got the best in the world there so it's a tough race so when
Speaker 4you have a look at the riser page today there's 30 odd meetings around the country that will be conducting melbourne cup meetings and the big meeting in ellerslie as well so you've got a lot of people that are going to be you're right it is the race that does stop two nations um and everybody will be watching at three o'clock and you've got so you are who just keeps on winning you had to win the bendigo cup and then you had to wait to see if you got the penalty you got the penalty and you're in our great race can he win again bjorn can he
Speaker 10win the cup go five in a row well geez uh it'd be too much just about the dream for but i do think he's an exceptional form he's come through that bendigo cup win really well um and this morning we couldn't be happier with him he's definitely going into the race the fittest horse and i think fitness does count it's a big day for them out there but a lot happening a big atmosphere the horses get there um often the race can run a little bit late 24 runners in the mounting yard so you want them there cool relaxed and that's one thing he will do i think he'd be really good pre-race never quite know but i'm really comfortable in
Speaker 4terms of where he's at yeah um i was listening to trent mason how to the other day and he rang stew ramsay up of course the owner breed of this horse and um straight after um trent found out that so you are was in the melbourne cup and i'll read out his social media um tweet that he put out on his x platform for those wondering what the melbourne cup means or questioning if it's lost its significance today i spoke to the owner of so you are stewart ramsay unbeknownst to him when i called to chat for a story ramsay didn't know his horse had made the field when i told him he was reduced to tears i can't believe it ramsay said you breed and race horses all your life hoping to get a runner in the melbourne cup and it's a dream come true um does it mean a little bit extra when you train for someone like stewart ramsay that he's living his dream
Speaker 10today well yeah and i've spent a few bit of time with stewie and his family in the uh last couple of days and um now he's a uh he's a character stewie softest part of him are his teeth uh he's got The golden rule, those with the gold makes the rules. And when I first came over, I had a horse. He gave me a horse. I didn't have too many horses and too many prospects 15 years ago. He also gave me a couple of the greatest serves ever. And one of the best ones is when I sack you, it will be because of the decisions you make, not the decisions I make. He's a tough man. He really did harden me up, but I'm great friends with all his family and our wives and kids and his grandkids now. So an amazing family. He also had champagne cuddles. He bred her and was able to race her with a lot of his friends and family too. So I've known him for a long time, and he breeds good horses. And when you look at the race, this is Aussie-owned, Aussie-bred, essentially Kiwi. Slash Aussie-trained and Rachel King from England. So we're probably getting as close to being the Australasian or Australian horse as you can when you look at the race. So it's pretty exciting to be there. It's a dream come true, and if he could be in it, it would be something else.
Speaker 4I know your father, Murray, is a legendary trainer, the most successful Group 1 winning trainer in Australia that, of course, trained in New Zealand. And he had so much success in this country. He won most of our great races, but he couldn't win our Melbourne Cup. I think he finished second with the Phantom.
Speaker 10Yeah, and we loved Australia. The minute he had a horse he thought could compete, it would be straight over. And that's probably the reason I'm here. So the Melbourne Cup's been a big part of it. I say he's won the New Zealand Cup, Wellington Cup, Auckland Cup, Brisbane Cup, Sydney Cup, Caulfield Cup. He came second in the 90s. He won the 1990 Melbourne Cup, still the quickest Melbourne Cup of all time. Kingston Rule won it at a track record. He's still the second fastest horse, but not the winner. And the winner does take all. In 1989, there were actually two greys in the race, called Celestin and Celestopera. The Phantom was just behind midfield, and they both fell. And he got shuffled right back to last. And in some ways, that's the one that got away. And maybe the other big one was after Mongolian Khan won the Caulfield Cup. Yeah. He was clear Melbourne Cup favourite, and he got stomach colitis and nearly died. So he never took part. So it's been a race that we've been there or thereabouts, or the family has, but haven't been able to crack it. So then I'm from a small town in New Zealand called Woodville, which is two hours north of Wellington. And there's not much going for Woodville, but we had the 64 Melbourne Cup winner in a horse called Polo Prince. And funnily enough, he was backed in from about 25s to 12s. So that's a little bit like so you are his things. There's a few similarities. And even I was coming out of the lift yesterday, I ran into Stephen King, who, of course, raced at least the late 1992 Melbourne Cup. So hopefully we can do it.
Speaker 4And I was talking to your beautiful wife, Andrea, at the races there on Cox Plate Day, and she was just mentioning your relationship with your dad, Murray. And obviously, he was tough on you in the early days. He made you earn it. But she tells me that he loves following you closely now. He watches all of your horses race. And yeah, I reckon he'll be the proudest father in the world if you can win a Melbourne Cup. He probably already is. But if you can win the Cup.
Speaker 10Yeah, I think he. Well, when I moved to Australia 15 years ago, they got interviewed about it. Murray said in the New Zealand Herald, the big newspaper and bold print in the middle, they took what they took out of it. And she said, no, you journalists, you like sensationalism. Gareth, you're another one of them. They put the bold print, the best thing for my son and my relationship has been the Tasman Sea. And that is the truth. No, no, he's quite a bit of a character. Now he's a softie.
Speaker 4Now he's a softie, they tell me.
Speaker 10Yeah, I think him and Stewie, I did think Stewie Ramsey was mellowing until I had say a week. And I think Stewie Ramsey was mellowing until I had say a week. I'll tell you what, I was wrong.
Speaker 4Hey, what about outside of the cup? And I hope you win it. It'll be one hell of a celebration. Well, I hope you go close anyway. For Thayer in race four, down to 1,000 metres, is it a good race, his fourth race? Yeah, it's a big race.
Speaker 10It's a big race. So she's done a good job. She's a nice filly. And she's got plenty of speed. Hence, we stuck to 1,000 metres. So she's just going to have to be relaxed and handle the day. I think that's the key for her. But she is a nice filly going forward in a tough race.
Speaker 4Will she handle Flemington? Will she be able to settle under Colin?
Speaker 10Yeah, I don't know. She can overdo it. And that's probably the concern today. So she's still learning what it's about. She's probably a little bit too quick for her own good. And I might be. It's sort of the opposite with So You Are. So we want them to relax. We want them to absolutely do everything we can, switch off. And that's the key in the cup too. So I'm just. Stephen in his last four runs can just overdo it a touch. And I'm hopeful today he'll really switch off, maybe with a bit more tempo.
Speaker 4Yeah. And geez, dance to the boom. This is a horse owned by Cambridge Stud and the famous Cambridge Stud Colours. And I thought she was excellent there first up at Caulfield in the Olingi.
Speaker 10Yeah, she was really good. And she won this race last year at 25 to 1. She's got a good gait. Of course, you talk Cambridge Stud, you talk Melbourne Cup, you talk the Bills, Tavistock and the latest new size sensation, none other than Sort of State, the sire of war woven. It's like a full circle, this game. It just keeps coming round and round. And no, they've been good to me, Cambridge Stud. And I think she can run well today for sure.
Speaker 4See, Gerry got the cash out there at Vinery. Did you get anything out of it?
Speaker 10Oh, jelly, I'll be lucky. Might get a crumb or two. She's been pretty good to me. No, absolutely thrilled he's going to Vinery. They do a remarkable job. And they've got some great stallions and good people too.
Speaker 4Yeah, and so dance to the boom. Lovely gait gets Rachel King. Do you think she's better than she was last year?
Speaker 10Yeah, I think she probably maps to get a little bit better run and probably a slightly stronger field will be it. So just mindful of that.
Speaker 4And race two. On Thursday, you're not the king. Should we back that, Galloper?
Speaker 10Yeah, I think she's a nice horse. I think she's got a good future. Gait two, she'd get a good run. And 1,400. And who doesn't love a good grade? The grades rate is always something special.
Speaker 4And dare I ask, can you win the big dance today?
Speaker 10You're not completely out of it. The big watch on the weather, there's a little bit of rain around. Perfumis really needs a rock-hard track. But she's going well and she's building nicely. And Punton's going to be up against it, no doubt. I would have loved them to maybe come second in the qualifying race and be in the little dance. So he's got a bad gait as well.
Speaker 4If I gave you $100 today, Bjorn, what would you do with it?
Speaker 10He's put $100 to win on So You Are for our great country, Australasia.
Speaker 4Yes, go and do it for Australia today with So You Are. I dare you. You should be super proud, Bjorn. You've done a mighty job.
Speaker 10I might have. If he happened to win, I'll tell you what I'll do. I'll do exactly what I did after I was maced with one of the Cornwall stud stakes. I went into the committee room and I said I'd never thought I'd do this. But off of my hand and my heart, I yelled out, at the top of my voice, I'm ready! I'm ready! I'm ready! I promise you, if we win, I'll be chanting again.
Speaker 4I hope your horse stays better than your voice. My voice is sounding at the moment. You go and get him, Bjorn. Well done. It's been such a wonderful carnival, but good luck in the Cup, mate. You go and live that dream. The boy from Kiwi. Kiwi, man. Good on you, Bjorn.
Speaker 10Good luck there, Bunders.
Speaker 4Good luck. It's 42 minutes past eight. We'll take a break. We'll continue on Giddy Up Stable Mail next year on Melbourne Cup Day. Welcome back to Giddy Up, Gareth Hall with you. 44 minutes past eight. Great to have your company. I've been loving the build-up to Sukumar. Sukumar. Sukumar's Tilda trying to win a Melbourne Cup on Racing.com. They've captured some great moments as Sukumar builds up to this day. And he's trained by a star in Graeme Begg, William Pike. It's his chance to win his first Melbourne Cup for the Delroy family there in WA. And Graeme Begg joins us here on Giddy Up on Cup Day. Hello to you, Graeme. How are you feeling on this Tuesday? Yeah, no, we're up bright and early.
Speaker 11We had a three o'clock start this morning. So, yeah. A lot of horses to gallop. Pre-going to Flemington.
Speaker 4So, yeah, we've got through all that and looking forward to it. I guess this is the dream, just to have a Melbourne Cup runner. But I would imagine it would have been a little bit nervous getting to the stables this morning, just checking up on Sukumar to make sure that he's all right to go, his temperature's okay, and that he'll take his place this afternoon. Yeah, that's always the case. I always say in racing, expect the unexpected. Yeah. I think we've seen that right throughout the build-up to the Melbourne Cavaliers. there's so many hoops that these horses have to pass and everybody wants to get into the melbourne cup but um and i was talking to a few different connections along this journey and there's been some that have been extremely unlucky with the horse like defiantly but after each trot up after you get the pet scan or the ct scan back it's just a huge relief i guess graham that you can move on
Speaker 11it keeps you on tenterhooks i can assure you of that but you know uh one thing that i can tell everyone there'll be no sore horses going into the race today because you know the protocols put in place uh look i think it's a wonderful thing and uh you know for the horses to be able to get through and uh with a clean belly health health uh going into the race you know um you know there shouldn't be any uh you know damage as far as horses legs are concerned you know possibly maybe a racing incident or something like that if there is any problems but uh certainly uh once you get off it's uh it's a big relief so
Speaker 4kuma of course um jumps from gate number 10 he's qualified for this melbourne cup nice and early um and you've been able to give him a campaign ready to peak for this day why do you think he can win the melbourne cup
Speaker 11now graham well i feel he he has really peaked on the right day because his coat has really uh come on in the last sort of couple of weeks and uh you know he's in very good shape his last piece of work on friday morning uh he was feeling that he's drawn a good gate where he can just have a resting run um you know probably worse in midfield and uh you know let the first wave go and be able to get onto something's back and drag him into the race and obviously he's going to the two moles for the first time but he was very strong at the 2800 meters of the ramsden so with 52 kilos on his back certainly think he can be right in the race and
Speaker 4how much is an advantage being knowing that you've been in the race oh look it's it's been
Speaker 11a big help for me i think it's been a big help for me i think it's been a big help because you can just program your races um going into the cup and uh know where you're at and uh you know so you know you've got the golden ticket so just matter of getting in there fit and well on the boat um and you'd be happy with gate 10 yeah i think it's good gate for him uh as i said he'll be able to just go back and uh you know travel into the race when he wants to i feel this horse is a better horse when he's on the outside of runners so um hopefully
Speaker 4that'll be the case what about a soft five for him perfect perfect um so he's ready to rumble what would it mean to you graham you've done so much in this sport your family's done so much in this sport but to win a cup
Speaker 11well it's the first runner so it'd be outstanding yeah well you
Speaker 4go and get them mate you got some nice chances there at flemington today jad's here she's always showed talent basically from day one um she's third up here she's at a good each way price for these three-year-olds down the straight over the thousand meters your thoughts about
Speaker 11her chances yeah i feel um back to a thousand meters she'll be well suited we've tried it twice at 1200 and she hasn't quite seen it out so um you know i thought that the thousand meters up the straight which she's performed well up the straight before the first start uh it would be ideal feel that she's drawn the right gate because they came down the middle to the outside on saturday so i wouldn't think it'd be any different today uh and a soft five will be perfect for
Speaker 4her all right then um should we put ruska roma in our quality race number nine is she good enough to win the hong kong jockey club stakes yeah
Speaker 11she went very well last start uh on that really heavy track on turnbull day um so look it's just drawn a bit sticky but she'll uh go back i have a resting run and hopefully by that time of the day they'll be coming down the middle of the track but she's
Speaker 4certainly got the ability yep she just needs a touch of luck 35 there we'll put her in our each way all day if i gave you a hundred dollars what would you do with the grain no guts no glory if we put it on zakuma i love it good luck today mate to you and your family and all the connections of sakuma cheers for that there's graham beg we'll take a break i think kiramar is not far away now for giddy up stable mail on cup day welcome back to giddy up all things to bet 365 this man's had one hell of a spring he's the champion trainer kiramar and he plays a major part in this year's lexus melbourne cup with seven runners karen thanks very much for joining us on cup morning chocolates uh she's been well supported over the last 24 hours um she's been in brilliant form and she gets harry coffee harry coffee broke his collarbone three days ago and he's riding in the melbourne cup um it's remarkable to hear him um be fit for this great race if you had a chat to him um before this afternoon's race uh i spoke to him
Speaker 12yesterday i haven't spoke to him this morning yeah but um but uh no he was pretty uh yeah i sort of left him alone and to give him the time to see if he give him every opportunity to get himself right and uh then spoke to him yesterday and he was going into racing victoria to ride the mechanical horse and get ticked off and um yeah he's um and you have to add to that as well you know the horse has got 51 which wouldn't be a walk in the park for him so he has that a bit on but uh he sounded very good and he rang me and then after he uh found the assessment uh he was right to go yeah so do
Speaker 4you just back him in then if he says he's right to go you're happy
Speaker 12with that yeah like collarbones you know that they're not the most essential part of your body and uh um you know there'd be some discomfort there but he knows the horse well and she's not the most difficult to ride
Speaker 4it would be a great story he's he's lived some life harry coffee um but this would be some story if he can win the cup on chocolates he's a great story herself isn't she karen she's come a long way hadn't she for a big group of owners
Speaker 12yeah that's exactly right so um lion seals and his team have bred her and and um you know to to be the daughter of a horse that he scaled the heights with him on the race uh shocking to be racing in the same colors i think it's got his i think his brother's brand on it and um um yeah just to be in the race with a real live chance i feel you know he must be absolutely tickled pink and um the quarter
Speaker 1pounder with cheese is made with 100 fresh beef cooked when you order it then comes the melted cheese the slivered onions the pickles the ketchup and the mustard add hot crispy fries and an ice cold coke all for eight dollars and if things go well one loose fry at the bottom of the bag the quarter pounder with cheese meal now eight dollars
Speaker 12you know it's what everyone dreams of is having a horse in the melbourne cup but let alone breeding one and one with a live chance too you know she'll handle a bit of giving the track she's got no weight and i think she'll run the trip so she ticks her
Speaker 4a few boxes um what about point of law geez your mom must be proud she was the one that got the deal done with the king when she sat next to him um during rural ascot week for lunch and she's a superstar your mom eileen but now you've got the second favorite for the melbourne cup um why can he win the melbourne cup today
Speaker 12uh ability i think um he's very raw and that's probably that'd be a negative you know it's only a sick start but um he's thrived since he's john geelong cup win i've been wrapped with his uh what he's done at um where are we and uh yeah um ethan was just beaming full of confidence when he rode him at after he got off at geelong and then he sat on him a couple of times this week and uh yeah he's he's very confident so i thought the draw was pretty good for him um i thought the track come up on him and i think he's got a lot of confidence in him all right i didn't want it too wet um and uh yeah you know he's got a he's got a big engine you know whether he can put it all together i suppose as a as a thing but he's definitely got
Speaker 4the ability it's been great watching your genius from afar and i've been talking to a few people involved in this horse and will bourne was explaining yesterday at the call of the card how you've been able to manage this horse because he hasn't been easier i would imagine to train there it were a bit you gave him some striding work there yesterday do you usually do that with a horse um before such a race yeah yeah definitely
Speaker 12yeah they're all they all have their different paths some straight up the day before and yesterday and this morning you know and others do their work earlier uh sort of late last week and and just tick over in but um yeah they're all different and uh he's just uh with each day and each passing week that he's been at werribee he's and then i think the run definitely helped um he's really just got more confident and comfortable uh in his surroundings and he seems a happy healthy fit awesome yeah
Speaker 4um do you think you'll settle today yeah yeah perfect we're quickly approaching 858 karen we'll try to get you on a little bit earlier but um i'm gonna get cut off with our ad breaks here so i've got to take a quick break um and then on the other side of it we'll quickly run through the rest of your horses on melbourne Cup day, including the five other runners that you have in our great race the Lexus Melbourne Cup. Mark Hunter will follow Kiramar with his preview of Melbourne Cup Day and will concentrate, of course, on the big one, the Lexus Melbourne Cup with Mark Hunter, who had a feel up there on Saturday. He didn't miss on Derby Day. This is a special Giddy Up on this first Tuesday, November. More from Kiramar next. Welcome back to Giddy Up. Mark Hunter not far away, but the champion trainer Kiramar joining me here on Giddy Up on this Tuesday morning. We just had a chat about point of law and chocolates. Middle Earth, right throughout this journey as we lead up to the Melbourne Cup, Kiramar, and I've asked you on several occasions, what's your best Melbourne Cup chance? You've always said Middle Earth. Are you still confident with him?
Speaker 12Very much, yeah. I think he's had the perfect prep. Very similar to last year. And as we've seen last year, he definitely has the two-mile engine and Mark Zara on board. And, yeah. Yeah, he likes to navigate his way from one, but I'd rather be in there than out the other side.
Speaker 4Yep. Gate one, as you pointed out, he just needs a bit of luck at the right time. But we've seen it before. Sometimes gate one can be the best game in these type of races.
Speaker 12Yeah, yeah, exactly. So, yeah, Mark's ridden the horse enough times. And, you know, he's a patient rider, he's obviously been successful in the race and you just need to get that nice rhythm and get in that sweet spot if you can and get that nice building momentum at the right time of the race. It's such a big field, that's probably the hardest part for any horse to get right.
Speaker 4Saran was the favourite for the Caulfield Cup at some stages before that race and he was okay in the Caulfield Cup, but you put blinkers on him ahead of the Melbourne Cup. Do you think that could be the difference?
Speaker 12Yeah, he was great at the Caulfield, very good. He ran super, I don't think he fully got to his top and it was a bit of a stop-starty run race. Two mile will be a little question, but the blinkers will only help. He's clean-winded, he's fit and he's only had the one blemish, which was the Turnbull. All his other runs have been very good, so he is a bit of a forgotten horse in a way, I feel.
Speaker 4Juju Cabot and Mr Monaco, would they surprise you if they won the Cup?
Speaker 12Not really, I think Juju is in career, well both of them are in probably career best form. Juju Cabot especially, he's come through two sort of slow run races, but he has sprinted quickly and Sam Clipperton's done a fair bit of work on him and been successful on him. Yeah, he's definitely got a chance.
Speaker 4Alright then, and then Mr Monaco's been great as well and Javes Johnson, this is a big opportunity for your apprentice, the boy from Tassie.
Speaker 12That is a big opportunity, it's a big opportunity for any rider really to ride in that race, but Javes, yeah, he's come across he's been successful on this horse and he'll have a bit of confidence about him and yeah, like yeah, he's got a big opportunity, he's been riding well and jeez, that would be a story as well.
Speaker 4It would be a story. What does Royal Supremacy do from the gate?
Speaker 12He'll probably, he'll have to get the first half right, he was keen last year, I feel he has got better that way, but he was doing a rain down, he loves a bit of cut in the track. But he was doing a rain down, he loves a bit of cut in the track. So yeah, he'll have to get the first half right until the second half is smooth.
Speaker 4Who's your top pick in the cup?
Speaker 12I think it's either Shocklets or Point of War.
Speaker 4Yeah, so the 20 and the 24 there in the Lexus Melbourne Cup for the champion trainer, Kiramar. We won't run through all of your horses, but jeez, they're back to Amsterdam in the first. He's two-year-old on Daboo in the Maribyrnong Plate.
Speaker 12Yeah, he's always. He's always shown ability right from the start. And yeah, his trials have been good. He's prepped smooth, I think he'll run well.
Speaker 4Alright then. You've got chances right throughout the day in both Melbourne and also Sydney. Can Gringotts win the big dance?
Speaker 12He can, no doubt. He's been successful the last couple of years. I think he's in similar form. And Nash wasn't happy with his ride on him, so I'm sure he'll get it right today. I think I'm into wins, got a big chance in the little dance as well. Okay. Yeah. And Enamorada in the last, it's a progressive mare and has only got better from last prep,
Speaker 4I think. If I gave you $100 on Cup Day, Kieran, what would you do with it? $100 on Cup Day?
Speaker 12Well, it'd be un-Australian if you didn't put it on in the Cup, so it'd be a point of
Speaker 4law. Beautiful. And what about outside of the Cup? We need a little bit. I'll give you $200, because you've got so many runners. I'd have something on Sanctuary.
Speaker 12Yeah. Race four, number 15 at Flemington. And I think Itch Noosa should have hit the line pretty well in the second.
Speaker 4Alright then. Beautiful.
Speaker 12I'll give you $100 on Sanctuary. Yep. Alright then.
Speaker 4Beautiful. That's race two, number 14. Go on with your second Melbourne Cup, Kieran. Thanks very much for your time, as always. Cheers, Gareth. There's the champion trainer, Kieran Marr. Six minutes past nine. This is Giddy Up on Melbourne Cup Day. Ah, the legend himself, Mark Hunter, after dominating on Derby Day, he's ready to go for the Hunter's Edge next. On Giddy Up, it's time for the Hunter's Edge with Mark Hunter. It's time for the Hunter's Edge, thanks to Robot Building Supplies helping you get the right product for the job at a better price. And on fire, they tell me, at Flemington on Saturday. He's a little flustered. He's done that many cashies. He's behind time. I speak of Mark Hunter. Happy Melbourne Cup Day, Mark. Morning, Gareth. Morning, all. Is it true? Can you confirm or deny these rumors? Now, I've got a few questions for you. Did you rock up to the Flemington race course there? I think you're in, not the committee room. What's the room that you go into? Chairman's. The chairman's room. And after the first race was won, the roaring sun flashed down the center of the track and you were on fire. Chairman's. Chairman's. The chairman's room. And after the first race was won, the roaring sun flashed down the center of the track and you were all over it. Did you go to a few tables, sit down and go, "The cream rises to the top on Derby Day?" In true arrogance, just like I'm the king.
Speaker 5True arrogance style. Yes. Well, Gareth, the week before, I didn't tip a winner. So if you were there for the banter that day, it wasn't very pleasant.
Speaker 4No. It wasn't very pleasant at all. And the man that you call the Colonel, Liam O'Keefe, is it true that you were so happy with yourself on Derby Day that you were celebrating and doing a lot of head wobbling that you knocked down a big bottle of red wine? Oh, it was poorly placed. It was poorly placed. You embarrassed us here on Giddy Up.
Speaker 5No, it was a miracle it didn't spill on me. It was on a stupid ledge. So you had a good day, Derby Day. Well, yeah. Yeah. It's a great day. It was one of the best days racing. It was hard to lose as a punter because they all rolled in one after the other. Well, if you're following you, you were losing. Well, it wasn't hard to find them, although they all rolled in one after the other. So it's a great, compared to Cox Plate Day, which was half full, didn't feel quite right, I thought Derby Day was outstanding. It was packed. People were cheering. There's black and white everywhere. Young crowd. It was a great day.
Speaker 4It's a great day for, it was a great day for racing. It's the best day. It is. It is. I think Champions Day is a better day, but the feel for Derby Day is better than Champions Day just because it's the start of four days. You've got the Cup on the Tuesday.
Speaker 5Talking to Mark, after he'd come back in on the next episode, he just said it was just lined with young people. He said, couldn't believe how young the crowd was, all dressed in their black and white. Just said it was fantastic.
Speaker 4I forgot to ask Kieran, but I think it's unlikely that the next episode goes to the Champions Sprint there on Saturday. He's nominated. I
Speaker 5heard Jack Turnbull this
Speaker 4morning and he said it was unlikely. Let's get an update from Liam O'Keefe. This is what he had to say this morning when he had a chat to Matty Nevitt and Lizzie Giles on RSC 926.
Speaker 7We received 7.4 millimetres of rainfall yesterday and this morning, and that takes us to a total of 19.2 millimetres for the week, so soft five. Weather's just starting to clear out here now, just a little bit of light drizzle at the moment. I think if we get some breeze and sun maybe later on, it's a very long day, Melbourne Cup day, so quite often the horses will get into the track a little bit early, but then it can dry out late.
Speaker 4There you go. So that is good news, Mark. I went there yesterday, Gareth.
Speaker 5Yeah. Quarter past three. coincide with Robbie's rehearsal.
Speaker 4Oh, how did that go? Robbie Williams, of course, seeing it in Flemington.
Speaker 5He came out on stage, got the Melbourne Cup. I just happened to be walking in the vicinity at the time. But then it rained. So he went off and I left the course and missed him by about 15 minutes. So what was the track like? Absolutely beautiful. Before the corner, it looks like it's just brand new. It looks superb in the straight. Certainly got marking inside. But I know the general feel is they'll get away from the fence. I'm not so sure. I think the inside four lanes, four or five lanes on the circle almost felt the best. The straight racing, there's only two races here today. Outwide's the best ground, again, out for the straight races. But in the circle, there's nothing wrong with those inside four or five lanes.
Speaker 4Let's preview the Melbourne Cup. And this is the race that we all want to try and find the winner in, Mark Hunter. And it's great to have all of our friends listening on the sports entertainment networks around the country, 1116 and 1170 now joining us. SE and Turf and WA as we preview Melbourne Cup Day here on Giddy Up. And it's a fascinating cup market now with bet 365. Yesterday before the call of the card, Mark, geez, it was fun watching the punters bet there at the call of the card, especially JP McManus, who will be joining us straight after 10 o'clock, the legendary Irish owner who owns a few horses but not Hopewell Rock. He had a million dollars at 10 to 1. And now he's into $7 Hopewell Rock. Point of lure at $8. Trust Your Instinct at $9. Chocolates at $10. So You Are at $12. Juja Cabo at $13. Middle Earth at $17. Sons and Lovers at $19. James J. Braddock at $19. Scooty Two Shoes, 20 to 1. Enfer Jar at $23. Sol the Spain at $23. Mr. Monaco at $26. Sukum at $26. Saran, $34. And then big prices for Wine Dark Sea at $41. Kisly at $41. Knights Choice, the winner of a couple of years back. At $51. Vorban at $60 to $1. Royal Supremacy at $70 to $1. Asterix at $71. One Smooth Operator at $71. And then Future History and Strictly Business also at that $71 quite their mark. Who wins this year's Melbourne Cup? The speed map's interesting. Where does the speed come from? Kislyar. Yeah. Has he got enough speed?
Speaker 5He'll get there eventually. He just went way too slow in that lead-up race. I think he's only possible chance of winning. I think he's only possible chance of winning a Melbourne Cup or being competitive is to go hard. So from inside out, Sons and Lovers will be first one down to the fence. Now it doesn't, it needs a soft run to run 3,200. So it's taking block behind them. Then you've got the three drawn next to each other. So you are, Infajar and Point of Law. So you are and Infajar need to take a sit to get the trip. Point of Law, as long as Ethan can control it, you think it would take a sit as well. You've got Future History who always rolls forward somewhere but won't be interested in leading. Mr. Monaco. They change their tactics and then you get the wave from out wide, which I think will eventually get across Goody Two Shoes, Kisly R, Royal Supremacy, maybe Wine Dark Sea. So I think Kisly R, it's just got no hope unless it leads. So it has to be aggressive. I think they all plan to come across together. Kisly R will look to take up the lead and I think will set a decent speed. Yeah. Who's the best drawn then? Well, they all seem to find their spot in the Melbourne Cup. You can say that Sons and Lovers and so you are in Anfjar get a good run, but if you don't run two miles, it doesn't really matter. So every horse, there's not that, unless you've got to go 24 like your horse, you know, you need things to go right. But there's not that many really, really unlucky runs in a Melbourne Cup. They all seem to get their chance. They fan. They start putting themselves into the race early. There's never too many hard luck stories.
Speaker 4I think the key is to find the right horse to follow.
Speaker 5Well, you get in that three-wide train, you just hope they keep improving. That's so often where the winner comes from. And exactly right. You know, I've heard Mark speak at Functions about following the right horse on without a fight. You've just got to, I think that race, you followed D'Oliver everywhere. You knew D'Oliver would take him to all the right spots and just kept following him. So you've got to have some plan, know who's around you, who'll take you where.
Speaker 4And I think with the Cup as well, we see a lot of these internationals and we just think they're the best stays. But there's still horses that arrive in this country that you think would get two miles because even some of them have jumped over hurdles before, but they don't get two miles at Flemington.
Speaker 5There's not a strong stayer, apart from Kislyar, there's not a guaranteed strong stayer among the imports that have arrived this year.
Speaker 4That's unusual really, because when you talk to the connections there of these international horses, they think that they're stays and they can get two miles at Flemington.
Speaker 5You get a horse like Vauban, he doesn't run two miles in Australia. He never has. He never will. And yet you put him overseas and he runs 4,000 metres. I don't know what happens overseas. I don't know how to explain that and why it happens. But that's the case. Like even last year, Vauban was ridden the best he possibly could be by Blake Sheen on the fence. So every inch of ground, around six got beat, whatever, nine lengths or something. It's a different 3,200 over here than it is overseas.
Speaker 4All right, then we'll quickly go through each and every runner. Sons and lovers, he gets a lovely gait, low draw. Dylan Brown McGonigal is one of the superstars of world racing. He's the number one rider for Joseph O'Brien. He was meant to be on Defiantly, but he was taken out. On Saturday morning, can he win Sons and Lovers?
Speaker 5I don't think so. He's going to get a beautiful run. He's had one go at 3,200. There was a tearaway lead and made a staying test. He just whacked up the straight. He has won over 3,000, getting a perfect trail now. He will get the beautiful run. He'll come off the fence on the home turn. He'll be within two to three lengths of the leader. He'll look like a real winning chance. Whether he can outstay them, I've got my doubts. But he'll run, you know, I'd say he would run top 10.
Speaker 4All right, then. He's a good each-way price at $19. I know that Kevin Blake, the racing manager for Joseph O'Brien, he is tipping this horse strongly each way. So 57.5. Is it a winnable weight? Can you win with 57.5?
Speaker 5There's a lot of higher weights this year. You've got Shockwoods down on 51, but there's quite a lot around the 54 to 57. So he's not that much above them.
Speaker 4Trust Your Instinct gets a wide gate owned by J.P. McManus, trained by Joseph O'Brien and McDonald Wright.
Speaker 5He's had four goes at 32, but they've all been over the jumps. He's had two goes at 28. One was good. The last run was very plain. Look, he's got to prove he can run 3,200 metres. But you just know he's going to be so well ridden. He's going to be in that three-wide train, just gradually improving, gradually improving. He's going to have the perfect Melbourne Cup run. He's going to come to the outside at the 400. He's going to look a great winning chance. And if he runs the two miles, he can win.
Speaker 4I think most of the Europeans don't mind a little bit of giving the ground, but I reckon McDonald and the Connection won it a good four with him.
Speaker 5Well, there's not that much. A wet track would have tipped this race upside down. Zakuma would be, I'd say, the best wet tracker in the race. And quite a few others, you're not guaranteed that they'll handle it. So the soft five is perfect for everybody.
Speaker 4Knight's choice is at a big price. He won the Cup a few years back. Is it too wet for him? Is he going well enough?
Speaker 5Well, I don't think it's too wet. The track wasn't really wet yesterday, and I assume it would have dried out well again. Yeah. So that's that. It's not an issue. He's obviously won the Cup with 51 and a half in 2024. He's drawn well. Cup winning jockey. I thought he was progressing well, the Herbert Power. Then in the Caulfield Cup, that was just a stupid run race. So, look, he got outspent. He got sped out the back. He held his ground okay to the line. I don't think he's going badly. Is he going well enough to win a Cup with 56 and a half? I don't think so, but he's a good stayer. A drying track would help him. He can run top half of the field.
Speaker 4Kieran Marr's happy enough with gate one for middle. He's always been big on this horse for the Melbourne Cup. Do you think, Mark, you work closely with Mark Sarra? Do you think he'd be happy with gate one?
Speaker 5Look, he's a slob out the gate, so he's going to end up off midfield inside. He'll have Knight's Choice probably get into rail in front of him, so we have to hope that Knight's Choice takes him somewhere or he can get a drag into the race. Ran third last year. Given a magnificent ride last year, he was going forward wide and going to be posted, and suddenly he lobbed about seventh one off the fence. So he got a perfect trail last year. He couldn't have had a better run. He needs to go a few lengths better than that. They mess around with him. They don't put the blinkers on until late. They put them on in the cocks plate. They've got them on here. I'm giving him a chance because I can just see Sarra poking up on the inside of the 600, getting every chance. So I'm giving him a chance, but he's probably down the order a little bit of my picks.
Speaker 4Well, this is a proper setup job, isn't it, really? Like this is an old-fashioned target one race and one race only. It is, but. It's been set for the Melbourne Cup. So yes, it is. I know. It doesn't work for every horse. But the others have had grand finals along the way, I guess. But I know where you're coming from. Five-all ban. Obviously, you didn't think he gets two miles the last couple of years, and he'll be second up this time around.
Speaker 5Off a plain Geelong Cup run. Yeah. So barrier 22. He's $61. I think those people that sold their shoes have done well. Look, I just can't see how he wins the Cup. He said three goes. He always looked to me like a two-mile doubt when he come here. I've always thought Absurd would be a better stay than him in those Cups. I backed Absurd both Cups, and I wasn't really mad on Vauban. And he's nine years old, Gareth. Surely there's some up-and-comers who can. He's having his fourth go. There's got to be some up-and-comers who can beat him home.
Speaker 4Envejar, number six for Roger Varian and Ray Dawson. He had an inside gate in the Caulfield Cup. He's $23. Did he do enough in the Caulfield Cup?
Speaker 5He's got, like Sons and Lovers, he's got Equicast on first time. Now, I don't know what that really does and doesn't mean. but it can't be ideal. He's had two goes at the 24. He ran them into the ground to win first up on one, first go on one well. Had every chance in the Caulfield Cup. You hear Ray Dawson say he just needed the run. He's got to go an extra 800 metres. That's a long way. He'll go forward. He'll get a great run somewhere, probably between third and seventh. He'll get a lovely trail. He'll have every chance. I don't think he'll be strong enough at two miles.
Speaker 4Can Wyndark say he bounced back? Like he was well supported on Caulfield Cup day, nearly started favourite. Really had a wide gate on that occasion. He's got a wide gate once again. He didn't handle Caulfield according to Damien Lane. Can you forgive him for that bad run in a Caulfield Cup? Because you're getting, what, $41 for him now with bet 365.
Speaker 5I think he's got no hope. I just weakened over 2,800 overseas, come back, dictated the race, won over the 26. It was a funny run race, the Caulfield Cup. It messed up quite a few chances, but he draws wide. He's got to roll forward. He's got to prove he can run two miles, got to prove he's good enough. He's got too much. I'm against him for my liking.
Speaker 4What about the nine asterisks at $71 for Chris Waller and Jai McNeil?
Speaker 5Remwell in the Auckland Cup 2024, it's only go 3,200. It missed the kick four lengths, weaved its way through and was a good effort to run fourth. It didn't really want a wet track, so it doesn't get one. I think it'll outrun its odds. I don't think it can win, but I can see it finishing top half of the field. Top 10? Yep.
Speaker 4Do you know what we're going to do at the end of the show? We'll have a top 10 multi, four horses. Okay. Then we go to Goody Two Shoes, the 10. She was second last year in the Melbourne Cup. Joseph O'Brien told me this morning on Giddy Up Stable Mail that he believes that she's better than she was last year. Obviously, she goes up in weight and she gets a similar gait.
Speaker 5Yeah, she drew 20 last year and 19 this year. Look, she's got to be a chance. She was given a magnificent ride last year, presented, just found half yours too good. I would take no notice of her most recent run. Basically, a barrier trial, got sped out the back early and, took no part in the race. That would have been just a tick over. She'll roll across with that speed that we mentioned early. If she can find a spot, you know she'll run the trip. Soft five looks almost perfect. So she goes in my quaddie for sure.
Speaker 4And she's a perfect example. Like if you go back to her Goodwood victory, it was very good. And then she just went around for a bit of fun, I reckon, there the other day in Ireland. Yep. Yeah. And then you've got the 12 Hopewell Rock. This is the favourite. I read the 11. Oh, sorry, the 11. 11, sorry. Juju Cabot. How could I forget Juju? I met a few of the owners there yesterday at the call of the card. This is what racing's all about, Mark. They are living the dream with Juju Cabot. They missed out on a Caulfield Cup start. And then they win the Moonee Valley Cup. And he gets his chance in a Melbourne Cup. Is he good enough? I think he's very short odds.
Speaker 5Ran ninth in the Sydney Cup. Did have some excuses. Got a bit held up and sped out the back a bit at the six, 700 metre mark. So I'd be forgiving of that. It's obviously come back a bit. A horse. I like that sort of barrier draw from Melbourne Cup. They get in that train. They just gradually keep progressing and progressing as those leaders collapse. Look, it would go in Makwadi cause Kirinmar trains it and it's in such good form, but a bit like Middle Earth. It's just down the batting order a bit.
Speaker 4It's a, it's a, if it's a strong run race, do you think that'll suit him? Well, that's gotta make it a bit tougher
Speaker 5to run 3,200 metres.
Speaker 4I forgot cause I put a line for him, but I forgot to ask you about the seven rule supremacy.
Speaker 5Strong barrier 21. Two years in a row. You wouldn't say that very often. Uh, look, it should have nearly won last year's Caulfield cup. Mr. Kit Ramwell, too keen in the Melbourne cup last year, total non-event in the Caulfield cup, but you would be very surprised. Yeah. He's probably the speed in the race. Do you reckon they'll go forward with him? I'll go forward, but if they want to lead on Kislyar, they'll be, I would think they'd be pretty hell bent on leading on Kislyar.
Speaker 4What about the goal, the call of the card with the 12 Hopewell Rock is now the favourite, he was double figures and now he's $7 with bet 365 mark.
Speaker 5Well, a few starts ago, it was ordinary. He'd ran six that Ascot finishing down the track finished alongside Omni-Man finished about eight links beyond opportunity. And you would say off that run, it didn't stay. Now it's gone and had two good runs since obviously the Ebor gave it a good steer. Yeah. Um, gave it a good steer for my it's drawn that barrier draw again, that I like in this race where they just get three wide. They keep progressing. I'm not sure it'll stay. That's my query. It's got to go an extra 400 toward it's gone. It's a bit like a couple of others. It would go in my quality, but it's down the batting order. I'm not convinced it'll run a strong 3,200.
Speaker 4That's interesting. George Bowie reckons that's what he's looking for.
Speaker 5Well, maybe he is, but you're going to go for what you see. And yeah, I'm not sure it's, I'm not sure it's going to run a strong 32 there. It's interesting as well.
Speaker 4A few of these other horses from Ireland and England have already qualified nice and early for the Melbourne cup. So, um, they didn't really have to be up all the time there in Europe during the season where Hopewell Rock. He had to, he had a few grand finals to get his rating up, um, to try and earn his spot into the Melbourne cup. And it wasn't until what Friday morning until he was, he was guaranteed a star.
Speaker 5Yeah. Look, he, I'm not going to say can't win because he's going to get the good run. He's in good form. It's going to blend into the race. So I'm not saying he can't win, but he's just down a little bit.
Speaker 4That's a look at the first 12 runners in this year's Lexus Melbourne cup. We'll come back and have a look at the second half of the card with Mark Hunter for a special Hunter's Edge on this Tuesday morning. This is the Hunter's Edge here on giddy up on Melbourne cup day. Great to have your company, wherever you may be listening on your local 11, 16 dollar on 11, 16, this morning, Mark, all of our listeners there that don't usually join us. They can listen to you every Friday morning, of course, for the Hunter's Edge on SEN track and RSN and racing.com. You can watch us on. You're good to talk to some young people today, Gareth. Yes. What do you mean? Oh, SEN tracks a younger audience, Mark. Um, but you've just come out of your, your, your. You've been dominating of recent times. Now, what number are we up to? We're up to number 13, one smooth operator. He's at a big price. Jeez. It would be a big surprise if he could win the Melbourne cup.
Speaker 5It would upset a few quadrilles and first floors look at round 12. It wasn't a bad run a couple of years ago. I got given no hope. Ran well, um, didn't fire last year. They would want to be supercharged blinkers that it's got on today. Supercharged is a good chance.
Speaker 4I was telling, oh, there's a few people that purchased him in the Calcutta there last night. Um, because you can get some money for running last.
Speaker 5Yeah, there's a few chances for us.
Speaker 4They get, they get tired and they get eased right down. Um, what about the 14 soul of Spain, Chris Waller and Tommy Berry? A couple of good judges are telling me that this is a great each way bet yesterday.
Speaker 5You couldn't help yourself. What do you mean? It's the best roughy in the race if it's dry and it's got the dry track. It's had two staying goes one, the maiden in Ireland over 3,300 and the Sydney cup run came from last picked its way through. Ran good second. I thought it was given a terrible ride. And the Caulfield cup and still ran well, it's got a good gate. Tommy Berry knows the horse. I can see it picking its way through. It's in my top four.
Speaker 4So he can win soul of Spain. You think he's good enough?
Speaker 5Well, I'll stay, uh, take away the Caulfield cup run. We're still ran. Well, it was given no heart. No horse wins doing that.
Speaker 4Uh, yeah, it can win. He's a genius. If he wins the cup while I, with this horse, yeah, well, he is a genius, but like, um, Saran gets the blinkers on. He was favorite for a Caulfield cup days. Before the race, Kiramar Benny Malem, he was okay in a Caulfield cup, but they're putting the blinkers on him to, to try and get a little bit extra out of him this afternoon.
Speaker 5He's my second pick Saran, I think he will jump out of the ground. You go back to those overseas 2,400 meter runs. They were outstanding before he come over here and they look like a horse that will get 3,200 meters. Now he's naturalism win was outstanding. He copped the heavy track in the turn. We'll forget that. Caulfield run, Caulfield cup was just a stupid run race. You never got a chance to get a rhythm from the six. Yes, he might've looked one pace up the straight, but he just never got into his rhythm here with Malem blinkers, three wide train, midfield working into the race. I think he's got a great hope.
Speaker 4What price is he? Saran? I just read it out $34. Um, he should get a lovely run as you pointed out. So you are the 16 to $12 and $4 50, um, looking for five wins on the trot. Bjorn Baker has done a great job with him. He keeps on winning. Can he win again?
Speaker 5I'd be stunned if he wins, I would be stunned. I look, maybe I'm just completely wrong with this horse. It's war seems crazy short odds. It look at the win in Sydney was okay. Two runs ago. Bendigo was an absolute travelator on the fence. Barkley square made ground on him in the straight. I just don't think he's you'll go forward, get a good run and he's in good form. I would be stunned. So he's maybe I'm completely wrong with him, but he's no part of my plans.
Speaker 417 future history. $61. Jamie Mellon looking for a second Melbourne cup and Greg. Gregory Hickman is the trainer
Speaker 5running the 2023 cup future history. Very good. It was wide last time, but it is outclassed
Speaker 4the 18 James J Braddock is the forgotten horse after the draw. He's out to $19. The black cloud.
Speaker 5I knew you just the, why would they trust you with the barrier draw?
Speaker 4Why? Why wouldn't you? I didn't have it. I didn't get a crack at them, Mark. I was the last one to go up and there was only one story of your life, Gareth story of your life. I can't wait to win. I'm going to go to the next one.
Speaker 5a stack to go right and I'm not sure it can from that barrier combined with having to prove himself at $3,200. So he would go in a trifecta but I doubt he could win. Kisly are the 19. Look, it'll give a side. One that $400. a 4,000 metre race at Ascot, heavily back the other day, like it was unbeatable. The race couldn't have worked out worse for it. It just went way too slow. And that was the end of it. It'll give you a sight. A lot of these won't run the distance. It will. If it's high balling in front, it could be in front for a long, long way. So I'm going to put it in my quaddie. It may lack the class, but I'm going to put it in my quaddie because I think it will find the top and I think it will run the distance.
Speaker 4Defiantly was one of the favourites before he was taken out. This horse has beaten defiantly twice this European season.
Speaker 5Beat him over the shorter trip and then over the 4,000. You had small fry back behind them, which gives you a form line for quite a few of the internationals. I'd just be completely forgiving of that run the other day. Look, if you want a race to work out badly for a horse, that's how it works out.
Speaker 4What would you do if you were the king? Because you sold point of law and now he could win a Melbourne Cup. He's at $8 with bet $3.65.
Speaker 5Well, he'd watch the race and cheer him home. He'd be a little upset, wouldn't you? Well, he's probably got a few other problems on his mind, Gareth. Family issues. So he, look, it's got, it's the one, it just might be too good. That Geelong Cup win was brilliant. It's got to handle the day. It's got to settle. It'll roll forward. It's got to take a spot and relax because it's got an extra 800 metres to go. Those runs, it ran over 2,800 at Ascot, got out the back and ran on pretty well. So I thought it ran 2,800 well. It's got to go an extra 400. But going off that Geelong Cup win, you'd think it would have settled in. It sounds like it's really acclimatised. It's my third pick and no shock if it's just too good. Yeah. How do you ride him? No, you've just got to get him to settle. You've got to get him to relax. You'd be hopeful you, banking on Kislyar, are setting a good speed. So you would be looking to be between about sixth and eighth, somewhere in that running line, hopefully settled.
Speaker 4Strictly business, 21 at 80 to one?
Speaker 5We love her. She's a great stayer, but she's just, look, the trainer would know her inside out, but she doesn't look like she's going well.
Speaker 422, Mr. Monica, another one for Kieran Murray and James Johnston at $26 with Bet365.
Speaker 5It's like a lot of Kieran stayers. It's going fantastic. Ran down the track in the Sydney Cup. I would be very surprised.
Speaker 4So Kuma, the 23, William Pike, Ray and Beg at $26.
Speaker 5Big win in the Ramsden. Looks like it will stay. The Herbert Power, like it's had the advantage of being in the race, so he can just try and train it for the day for the minute. The Herbert Power, I thought it was a bit soft late, which wasn't a great sign. No guide last time, ridden forward over that short trip and dropped out. It's going in my quadrilla because I think it will stay the trip and working on the fact that it had fitness to come from the Herbert Power, it's not hopeless.
Speaker 4What about Shockless, the 24? This is a great story. Harry Coffey, he's picked himself off the canvas, had surgery on Sunday and he's riding in the Cup for Kieran Murray. She's at $10.
Speaker 5I think she'll win. She's in. She's had every run past 24. She'll win. I think so, yeah. She's top pick. She's, um, every run past 2400 has been outstanding. They've fiddled around with blinkers on, blinkers off, and she's just got the perfect little 51 kilos to be in that three-wide train. She's a superior star. She came off that fast run race to win there recently at Flemington. I think she'll run 3200. She looks to be absolutely trained to the minute and she's my top pick. So there you go.
Speaker 4Harry Coffey. Um, he's got a ride with the broken car. He's got a broken collarbone. Yeah, it can't be easy. No. You've played through a lot of injuries throughout your illustrious football career.
Speaker 5I was very brave.
Speaker 4I hope he wins it, Harry. What a story. Might be hard to, is it his right arm or left? Um, I'm not quite sure, but I've seen him, he's, he's, he's had to ride the mechanical horse. He's passed all the fitness tests. I saw him move his arm there yesterday in a, in a video that I saw. He's right to go. Good. I don't know if Lee Matthews will tackle him to the ground.
Speaker 5I wonder if Michael D didn't go and visit him and bowl him over. It's his right arm.
Speaker 4Is it? Yeah. So your top four numbers in the cup. 24, 15, 20, 14. So 24 is of course, chocolates. 15 is Saran. And then you put in point of law for third. What was fourth? Soul of Spain. Soul of Spain. Um, for Chris Waller, Tommy Berry. Let's play the game. Yes or no. Can they win the Melbourne Cup, Mark Hunter? Number one, Sons and Lovers. Oh, no. Two, Trust Your Instinct. Yes. Three, Knight's Choice. Nope. Four, Middle Earth. Yes. Five, Vauban. Nope. Six, Envejar. Nope. Seven, Royal Supremacy. Eight, Wine Dark Sea. Nope. Nine, Asterix. Nope. 10, Goody Two Shoes. Yes. 11, Juja Cabot. Yes. 12, Hopewell Rock. Yes. 13, One Smooth Operator. Nope. 14, Soul of Spain. Yes. 15, Saran. Yes. 16, So You Are. Nope. Um, uh, 17, Future History. Nope. 18, James J. Braddock. Nope. Oh. Barry, you killed it. Oh, jeez, you're. Poisoned Chalice. If I were, if, unbelievable. 19, Kislyer. Yes. 20, Point of Law. Yes. 21, Strictly Business. Nope. 22, Mr. Monaco. Nope. 23, Sakuma. Yes. And 24, Chocolates. Yes. That's Mark Hunter's preview of the Melbourne Cup. It's 39 minutes past nine. We'll take a break and we'll get his tips. for the rest of the card on this Tuesday. Time to preview the rest of the Melbourne Cup card at Flemington with Mark Hunter for the Hunter's Edge. Great to have your company wherever you may be listening on your local 1116 dial. SEN track, RSN 927. The SEN and RSN apps. The Hunter's Edge brought to you by the Kia Seltos Hybrid. Available now. Find out more at kia.com.au. How do you think this track will play?
Speaker 5Same as I explained it before, Gareth. Yeah, but down the straight. Oh, no, no. They'll come wide. Those lanes where the next episode and Dolla and Flying for Fun were. They're your best lanes. Apologizing. That's right.
Speaker 4Yeah. No, you should apologize to me. I asked you about the circle, but down the straight, you didn't explain it. I'll tell you the best lanes.
Speaker 5That, um, Coolmore would have, I think, almost certain you would have got a different result if you changed those barriers.
Speaker 4All right. Then let's run through your tips. Royal Press, $4. Amsterdam is the favorite at $2.70. Hedges has been well-supported, Amsterdam.
Speaker 5$2.16. $2.16. Well, Royal Press is your leader. No idea if the form's any good or no good. They'd all trialed against each other before that race. They raced against each other, but it's got race experience. It's got speed. It's got barrier nine. So look for Amsterdam to sit hard on its back and try and run it down. Amelia's Affairs only had the one jump out. It wasn't eye-catching, but it was in good time. So I'll go $2.16.
Speaker 4$2.16 in the first race. Number two, you, son. It's a funny horse, this horse. He looks gone, and then he comes again. He's at $2.70 with bet $3.65. Chisper, it's $5.50. And Ichinusa is an Italian beer at $6.50. And Kiramar gave this a horse a good push this morning, Mark.
Speaker 5It's a very good horse, Ichinusa. It's my second pick. It might be one run short, and it needs a miracle from the gate, but it's a very good horse, so watch for it. I'll go $13.00, $14.00, $10.00, and $5.00. Number 13, you, son. Got the wide gate. It'll roll forward somewhere. And need a half-decent run from that barrier, but it was terrific last time. $14.00, Ichinusa. Really liked the horse. Ran well first up. Got a great hope, whether it's one run short. $10.00, Chisper. I backed it last Saturday at $25.00 to $1.00. It was virtually a non-event. Took no part in the race. Gets J-Mac here from the good gate. Short enough in the market, and then five politely done who will appreciate the drawing track. So $13.00, $14.00, $10.00, and $5.00. I reckon Chisper might go very, very close today, Mark. It was $25.00 to $1.00 Saturday. It should have gone very close.
Speaker 4Race number three over the 1,800 metres. Scratch the three, True Tone, and also the 11. Favourite here, Star of Massanen. A few of these horses were entered for the Derby meeting, but Star of Massanen, he's at $3.20. Fringilla at $4.80. Katoto at $5.50, and then Waiheke Rose is $5.50. Mr. Whisk is at $8.50. Jeez, I'm getting some good pushes for Billy Cart. Tage Weir prepares into $11.00 now with Bet365. You got Waiheke Rose in the Oaks at this stage as well.
Speaker 5I'm going to go $6.10, $2.08, I think, number six. Katoto, time between runs, but had the tick over jump out. I thought it was good in the Jim Maloney around that track at Caulfield running on well from the back, so I think the distance will suit. I would have been worried on a wet track, so we don't want any worse than a soft five. $10.00 Billy Cart. That was an outstanding debut win. It was really good trials before that, so I started big odds. There is some speed in this race. If they chop each other up, it'll be strong. Two-star of Macedon. I don't like that race to come out of, but it ran well against the bias, and eight Fringilla might go better if it can find the top, but again, there's some pressure for the front,
Speaker 4so $6.10, $2.08. I like this race over the 1,000 metres for the three-year-old Semantics and Southern Sway. The 11 and 14 come out. The South Australian Ole goes the favourite at $5, but it's $5 the field. Payton at $5.50. He was scratched there the other day, but they've got a big opinion of him, the O'Shane Charlton camp. Favea's at $7. Sanctuary at $8.50. Kira Mar gave this horse a good push this morning as well. The Speed Machine at $9, and Gin Twist at $10 here, Mark.
Speaker 5I like Sanctuary, number 15. I think it's got a great each-way chance, but we need Favea to do the right thing and come to the best part of the track. Favea, it's one of the fastest horses you've seen.
Speaker 4Well, Rach will be listening. Tell her where she has to go.
Speaker 5Out to where all the winners were.
Speaker 4So out why?
Speaker 5Not where Disnick was.
Speaker 4Amen. Okay, yeah.
Speaker 5You don't want to go down the middle.
Speaker 4No. No. Unless you want to lose.
Speaker 5Yeah. So you go out wide. So what lanes we're talking? To the better part of the track.
Speaker 414, 15? Somewhere like that, just under the aerated part.
Speaker 5So Favea's very quick. It's strong gate two, or comes into gate one, but it'll lead. It's a flying machine. So if it spears across, they'll spread out. I like where Sanctuary's drawn. I like it to be in the right line of the speed. One well first up at Bendio. I think it'll go better with a sit. It's trolled well on softish ground. So we'll go with it. 13 Favea. Good debut win, led by a massive space last time. Just went way too hard. Got run down. Gee, it'll take some catching. Three-o-lay go. You know it's going to get a beautiful run for James McDonald. Rode the track perfectly on Saturday and for Peyton. Was that a setback or a decision to scratch?
Speaker 4I don't know, but I think they were pretty keen on it there when they scratched it on Cox Plate Day.
Speaker 5I don't know that it's a real thousand metre horse, but the real fast pace will suit it. It's well drawn out wide. It's got some hope. So I'll go 15. 13, 3 and 4.
Speaker 4The Heritage Cup is over the 2,800 metres, or 1,800 metres, I should say. Scratch the 1, Augustus. The 3, Tavi Time. 12, Real Class. Where are you going? Oh, sorry. That's race 6. Sorry, race 5. The Heritage Cup, it is over the 2,800. Yeah, sorry. I like Jenny Vermoes too at $5. Tempestby at $7. Grand Piero at $10. Beach Pad at $10. Autumn Heat at $10. Athabaskan at $11. And Leon Croix at $11.
Speaker 5I like 4 and 20. Number 4. Number 4, Tempestby, had its first go for the Bedgwood Stable. And Ramwell up in Sydney. The little jar out of the track is perfect. Hasn't won for three years, some concern. But it's had a few reasons for that. What were the reasons, Mark? Well, wrong races and wrong conditions and things like that. And I think it lobs into its right spot here. Gate 6 gets a good run behind them. Should stay the trip. 20, Leon Croix. Comes off that midweek track at Caulfield, which gave most of the horses that day no hope. I thought at Ramwell. I think it's the. It's a danger for sure. 2 Athabaskan. Just might have been a run short in that Tempestby race last time. And 18 Black Peppermint for Patrick Payne. It'll stay all day. It's in great form. It's a much harder race, but will run well. So 4, 22 and 18.
Speaker 4So 4, 22 and 18. After race number 5, we'll take a break and we'll come back and have a look at the second half of the car with Mark Hunter next. JP McManus, the legend himself from Limerick, from Ireland, who had more money than you yesterday. Mark, at the call of the cart. He had a crack. He had a fair dink and crack. So he's going to join me straight after we finish with you. So looking forward to that. Then we're going to go right across the country to try and find you plenty of winners with bag of tips. But we're up to race number 6 over the 1,800 metres and you can scratch Augustus, Tavi, Time, Real Class and Different Gravy. Interesting market here with bet 3, 6, 5. Sabarge at 2, 40. Dark Bonnie at 4, 20. St. Lawrence at 4, 20. 5, El Duca at $9. Weimar at 13. Can you trust Sabarge at that price?
Speaker 5I reckon Sabarge is going through the motions. It looks like it is going through the motions. Now, it gets to Flemington. It gets to Jarrett, which suits it. And it gets Mark Zara. So it may well wake up today, but it needs to. It's getting very much detail. Look, it might win. I think it's short enough odds. If it runs to its best, it'll beat them. But can you trust it? So I'm going to tip number 7, Weimar, each way, who's, I think, flying, was a good, tough win in the Seymour Cup. The extra distance is no worries. Its overall record for the stable is fantastic. It'll roll forward, park just behind the speed, and run very well. 10, Dark Bonnie. Close to a win. Got a good hope. 4, Sabarge. Look, it might win. I just think it's very short. And 6, El Duca, who should get a nice run in front. Shouldn't get pested. Should get a nice run in front and give you a good sight. 7, 10, 4, and 6.
Speaker 4So 7, 10, 4, and 6 in race number 6. Race 7 is the Melbourne Cup. Just repeating Mark Hunter's tips here. Like, Chocolates to 24, over the 15, Saran, over the 20, Point of Law, over the 14, Sol of Spain. We go to race number 8, and Renison. Wow, this has been a fine, hasn't it, for Lindsay Park? Unbeaten. And he's 320 into $2. Vista Natural, 550. Barracks at 750. Harry Lyme at $9 here, Mark Hunter.
Speaker 5I think it'll win. He was down to run in the Carbine Club, or nominated. Didn't go through with that. So stays at the 14. Still wins have been outstanding. It ran quicker time than Conquer the World, who we see run well in the Carbine Club. It is harder to lead and win if they're sitting off the fence. But the way this track will be, I don't think you'll have to go too wide. So, look, I think he'll win. 8 shooting break. Really consistent. Got a great place chance again. 13 missed the natural. This is a harder race. It'll be running on and two barracks. Has to run the 1,400 metres. Draws wide. Probably takes a sit just behind them and blends in at the right time. 5, 8, 13.
Speaker 413 and 2. The mayors do battle in the Hong Kong Jockey Club. Stakes over the 1,400 metres. The horse named after you. You sexy thing is out, along with Karen. Favourite Shatterfar at 3.20. Terra Lee, 5.50. So you pent $7 and danced to the boom. Last year's winner at $10. Stylish at 13.
Speaker 5There's only one of us putting make-up on between ads, Gareth. Only one of us. And it ain't me. Well, you should, actually.
Speaker 4Yeah, because you're shining. You're sweating. You're under pressure.
Speaker 5You've got to put.
Speaker 4You're on. You've got to put. You've got to put on your TV.
Speaker 5Vanity. Vanity Fair over there.
Speaker 4Good to see you. You're wearing that. Where did you get that Gazman shirt from?
Speaker 5Yeah, 100%. Yeah. 8. We'll just walk in, buy them and walk out. Yeah. And you're done. Did you buy your black pants the other day? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I bought them and walked in and bought them.
Speaker 4You didn't spill red wine over them, did you? No. No. No.
Speaker 58, 5, 2 and 6. Number 8, Terra Lee. Chased on that leader's track last time and ran well. Fitter. Ready to fire. 5, Miss Free Love. Gets the 1,400 metres. Well, it's game. It's going. It wouldn't shock you if it just needs it and just comes roaring down the outside. Two Chateauvars going to lead and give you a great sight. And probably wanted wetter number 6, Ruscaroma. It's going well, but probably wanted a wetter track, so place only at the big odds. 8, 5, 2 and 6.
Speaker 4And race number 10 over the 1,400 metres. Scratch the 3. Porter surfs up the 5. A man of worth the 10. Bucklew's a good horse. He's the favourite with bet 3, 6, 5. You can boost him to 3, 75. He's at 3, 50. Jet smash $5. Everone at 5, 50. Allnature at $9. Space Rider at 11.
Speaker 5Take the boost. Number 1, Bucklew. He's just flying. Yeah. He's got a good gait. With the scratching of Porter, that leaves Jet Smash as the leader. So I don't think Bucklew will be that far behind. Jet Smash will take Bucklew all the way. It'll just be a case of running down that horse the last 200 metres, I think. 7, Jet Smash. Certainly the danger. Did too much work last time. Scratch the stable, mate, which takes a lot of the heat out of the race. It'll get a great run. 12, Ever Rain. 10, just would have liked that. Like more pressure in the race, Ever Rain. It draws wide. Have to go back and run on. And 2, keep your cool. Who should go forward, sit right on the back of Jet Smash, get every chance from there. But I think it's a good race. Bucklew, good race to bet in. I like 1 and 7. I think Bucklew will win, but I'll be saving on Jet Smash and taking the same race multis.
Speaker 1The quarter pounder with cheese is made with 100% fresh beef, cooked when you order it. Add hot crispy fries and an ice cold Coke, all for $8.
Speaker 4Ba-da-ba-ba-ba. What about your best bets on Melbourne Cup Day, Mark Hunter? Take it away and a staking plan.
Speaker 5Best bet race 10, number 1, Bucklew. Then a multi race 8, number 5, Renard Sun into race 10. 10, number 1, Bucklew. The Rammer Ruffy, race 4, number 15, Sanctuary. The Danny Del Rey Daily Double, which today is on races 7 and 9, as I realise I've just made a mistake. So race 7 and 9 of Melbourne Cup will go 2, 4, 10, 11, 12, 14, 15, 19, 20, 23, and 24. Into numbers 2, 5, and 8, Shadovar. The Quiety, we're taking Renard Sun 1 out. So again, wide in the other three legs. First leg, 2, 4, 10, 11, 12, 14, 15, 19, 20, 23, 24. Second leg, number 5, 1 out. Third leg, numbers 1, 2, 5, 6, 8, 11, 12, and 14. Last leg, numbers 1, 7, and 12. $90 staking plan, or $100 staking plan, sorry, for the Melbourne Cup day. You've got 30 seconds. All up win race 8, number 5, Renard Sun into win race 10, numbers 1 and 7, Bucklew and Jet Smash. You can back Give Some Lip at Wangaratta, and you can back the Cunning Fox at Echuca. And Spud likes race 2, number 5.
Speaker 4And that's at Ascot, race 2, number 5. Extremely well done, Mark Hunter. Hopefully you have the best day there at Flemington today. Thanks for your time, as always. Thank you. There's Mark Hunter. You may manage to join me next. It's a busy final half an hour on Giddy Up before we head off to the team there on Racing.com. But SEN Track, because Paul Sebastiani, Mickey Gatton, David Taggart will be ready to go. I don't know if it's Josh Jenkins or Matty Nevitz today, but they'll be taking over after 10.30. The first race on Cup Day is at 10.45. It is great to have your company wherever you may be listening on your local 1116 dial, SEN Track dial, RSA 927 dial, and of course watching us on Racing.com. Um, I'm looking forward to catching up with J.P. McManus, the legendary Irish horse owner who's obviously had great success in business. But I'm really looking forward to catching up with J.P. He's trying to live one of his dreams, I guess, and win a Melbourne Cup today. He's got two strong chances involved in the Cup in Trust Your Instinct and also Goody Two Shoes. And after that, we'll go right around the country with bag of tips, trying to find you some winners on Cup Day. There's over 30 meetings in Australia this afternoon. But J.P. McManus, the legend himself, the boy from Limerick, joins us here on Giddy Up. J.P., welcome to Giddy Up on this Tuesday morning. Happy Cup Day.
Speaker 13Well, thank you. Good morning, Garrett.
Speaker 4What would it mean to you, mate, to win a Melbourne Cup?
Speaker 13Well, when I see all the excitement and hype and everything that goes with it out here, it's very, very special. Yeah. When they say it's a race that stops the nation, I know now what they mean.
Speaker 4Yeah. We love our horse racing. We love to punt. And we know that you love to punt. How much fun was that for you at the call of the card there yesterday, J.P.?
Speaker 13Well, it was exciting, I have to say. And it was like old times when at least you could get a bet on. And it was new to us. It's a long time since I saw that kind of excitement.
Speaker 4Yeah. And you backed Totewell Rock. And he's been supported now into favourite. Why do you like him so much, outside of your horses, of course, who you backed as well?
Speaker 13Yeah. I've had a few bets in the race. We made him the big winner because I felt he had the best chance. Yeah. Did you? And he ran in the Eber, ran well. It was a good trial. And, uh. You know, I'd be delighted to beat him, I must say. To me, more to win the race than the money. But it would be a nice consolation.
Speaker 4Yeah. Why do you love this game so much? Obviously, you've had. Your colours are famous, especially in the national hunt world in Ireland and England. And you started off as a bookmaker all those years ago. But why do you love the racetrack so much, J.P.?
Speaker 13I suppose it grows on you. Do you know? It grows on you. You know, I got a bookmaker's licence when I was 21. Didn't find it easy at the start. Had to go back looking for my old job a few times. And, fortunately, in the end, it worked out well. I remember going back to my dad a few times, looking for my job back, that I didn't have any finance and I got it out. Luckily, I never went. I never went into debt. And so you were always able to make a comeback. Nobody missed you because you didn't do anybody. You know, so.
Speaker 4What would your advice be to people out there, J.P.? Obviously, you had so much success in your business life and you've been able to live some life and you've helped a lot of people out in Ireland and obviously you've owned many a horse. What would your advice be to people out there?
Speaker 13Well, I don't know. I'd say follow your dreams, I'd say, and then make the most of them and whatever you like, do and try and develop it. And, you know, at least every day you're going to work won't feel like work, you know, so.
Speaker 4And you team up with Joseph O'Brien here. What makes. You've known his dad and obviously the Cornwall team as well where he grew up. What makes Joseph such a special trainer in your eyes?
Speaker 13Well, number one, he's very well-bred. Yes, yes. His dad was a champion amateur. His mum was a champion amateur lady rider. His grandfather, Joe Crowley, was very, very successful. So it's in the blood, in the veins, I think he is. Great understanding of horses and also how to place them. You know, he's all the ingredients of a great trainer.
Speaker 4Yeah. And he's had so much success and he's only in his early 30s. Who do you think your best chance is today? Is it the mayor, Goody Two Shoes, who was so close last year? Or is it this trust your instinct that we haven't seen before in this country but you get our best jockey aboard in James McDonald?
Speaker 13You know, it's. It's hard for me to know. They both had great preparations, uninterrupted. And, you know, for the last 12 months or so, this race has been very much in mind and try to get them in the peak of condition for it. I believe they're training well. Beyond that, trust your instincts, he has a couple of pounds more than I thought he might have got. I honestly don't know. They both have sporting chances. They're drawn a bit wide, a wide barrier. But while saying all that, we can't make any excuses because everything has gone very smoothly. And I must say, for all being out here and how we've been looked after so well in the hotel, on the race course, and everybody is so welcoming and it's so exciting to be here.
Speaker 4Yeah. In a wonderful country. Yeah, and we love having you. Last question before I let you leave, JP. What will be your greatest achievement, winning a Melbourne Cup or having, I know you love your golf and you've done so much for the game of golf in Ireland, but you purchased a course and renovated it. And next year, in your home country, you'll be hosting a President's Cup. Now, what does that mean to you?
Speaker 13Well, firstly, it's a Ryder Cup.
Speaker 4Ryder Cup, sorry, sorry.
Speaker 13Actually, it's great to have it coming to Ireland. And to be then in my hometown like Limerick and our home city and outside of the day. You know, it's been, how would I put it to you? Everybody has loved it. The community have all bought into it. And the. There's a great community spirit there, I think, where everybody wants to make everybody feel so welcome. Something like the welcome we got here in Melbourne. Yeah. So, fingers crossed that we get a bit of reasonable weather and all goes to plan.
Speaker 4Yeah. Well, good luck today, mate. And I always say this to our guests. If I gave you $100, JP, $100 Australian dollars, what would you do with it this afternoon?
Speaker 13What would I do with it? Yeah. I think I might have it on Goody Toons.
Speaker 4Goody Toons. I love it. It's great having you on this country, mate. You're a bloody legend. We've watched you from afar. You go and get them today and enjoy our Cup Day. Over 100,000 there at Flemington. There's nothing like it, mate. Thanks very much for your time.
Speaker 13Take care. Thank you.
Speaker 4Yeah. There's the great JP McManus. Eight minutes past 10. Let's take a break on the other side of it. We're going to come back with all of our experts as we try and find you a winner on Melbourne Cup Day here for our bag of tips.
Speaker 3The gear. The Giddy Up bag of tips for Oz Equipment Rentals. Supplying equipment to the construction, mining and roadworks industries.
Speaker 4OzEquipment.com. Don't forget today we've got the Giddy Up Weekend Preview Top 4 Multi. You've just got to log into your Bet365 account and it's the best value that you can get all day. It's a lot of fun to play. We got it last Saturday on Derby Day and I think the team's confident that we can do it again. Cabuccio is our first play and that's race one at round week. So you've got to get in nice. Nearly here. Then we've got Ole Go race four at Flemington. Bucklew race 10 at Flemington and Anna Murata race 10 at round week. So that's a 5.57 there with Bet365. So you haven't got long to get on now. It's double the rest of its competitors there. So it's the way to play. The Bet365 Giddy Up Top 4 Multi. Plus you can play for free there with the six horse challenge is a chance that you can win $100,000 there with Bet365. As I pointed out, it's a massive day. It's the biggest day for most race clubs around the country, Melbourne Cup Day. And there is plenty of meetings to try and find you a winner. Up in Queensland, of course, on this Tuesday afternoon, we're racing at Doonbin. And Chris Nelson joins us here on Cup Day. All thanks to Racing Queensland. Hello to you, Chris.
Speaker 14Good morning to you, Gareth. We have more race meetings in Queensland today than anywhere else in Australia. Can you believe that?
Speaker 4Yeah. It's not a public holiday either, is it?
Speaker 14No, it's not a public holiday. And we have 10 race meetings, which is unbelievable. So, yeah, they're not all tab meetings, of course. A couple of those usual venues like Townsville and Toowoomba are racing, but they're not tab venues. But, yeah, it's going to be great. We just need the weather to do the right thing in the southeast because they're predicting Armageddon here at some stage today. So hopefully it doesn't happen.
Speaker 4I think it's the biggest day or one of the biggest days for most metropolitan race clubs as well, I reckon, at Ascot. This is the biggest crowd. pretty sure it's when I talked to the Brisbane racing club, this is close to their biggest crowd as well. on Cup Day. So they'll be packed at Doombin. Where do we start with your plays?
Speaker 14Let's go. We're going to go late in the day, actually. Race eight, horse number seven, Podium Star. Now, this horse won on debut by an absolute space, then had a major injury setback. I don't think they thought they'd get this horse back to the races, but they have. And that last run in town was a very good one, just like the ground that I was making up late. I think he's close. I like the slight step up in distance. I think he's the horse to beat today. So race nine, sorry, race eight, number seven, Podium Star. Now, the other one, DeSanto, only lightly raced. Race nine, number 10, bolted in last start. I think can take the step up in grade here today, back to the city. Has run well in stronger races in the past. Looks very well placed. So they're the two for Doombin. Race eight, number seven, Podium Star. Race nine, number 10, DeSanto. I can't believe the price of Sunshine Coast race one, number seven, Sciatic Flash. It should be odds. As far as I'm concerned, it's not. Should be odds on. Two absolutely cracking runs for James Healy, and gets back to the home track. I know the rail's nine metres, but wow, if it doesn't beat these, I'd be very, very surprised. It's busting to win a race. So those odds look pretty good to me. Race one, number seven, Sciatic Flash. And another one up here, race three, number four, Golden, sorry, race, I think it's race five, number four, Golden Eclipse. I'll just check that. This is a horse that failed in town last run. Has certainly had a trial since. Trial was quite good, and there was plenty of excuses at that run. So expect improvement from race six, number four, Global Eclipse. For the Muntz team, so very keen Sciatic Flash. Pretty keen, those others. I just want that rain to stay away, Gareth.
Speaker 4Take that $2.60 now. We bet $3.65 Sciatic Flash there in that first race on the Sunshine Coast. Who's your tip in the cup?
Speaker 14Hopewell Rock. I like Hopewell Rock. I think the form out of the Europe is good. Look, it's a tough, obviously a very tough race. There's so many European forces. The form lines, they're very hard to line up, but I do like what this one's been doing. Did you say you had a share in James J? Yeah, I do.
Speaker 4Yeah, very lucky and grateful. I appreciate that. Terrific group of owners and yeah, it's very exciting. Did you get any sleep last night? Not really. No, I've had no sleep for the last five days. Well, if you don't, you can get the winner. Yep. So just pray to God that we get some luck.
Speaker 14If he wins, you won't be sleeping again probably for the next 10 days.
Speaker 4Good luck. You can always giddy up. Thanks for that, Chris. I appreciate it. I appreciate it. Good on you. Good luck, Gareth. See you. See you, mate. Lincoln Moore. It's Johnny Letts Cup Day there in Morfaville on Cup Day. Thanks to Racing SA. Hello to you, Lincoln.
Speaker 15Gareth, how are you, mate?
Speaker 4Good. Thank you, mate. What are we doing today, mate?
Speaker 15Well, it's pretty tough at Morfaville, but I'm going to back Steven Theodore to get one to bounce back. Race four, number one, Flying Grant. I think, look, on his best form, he'd be too good for these horses, and they go for the ultimate gear change here in SA at the moment, and that's Noel Callow jumping on, obviously, coming off a four-winners. Yeah. Morfaville on Saturday, but this horse, he's competed in some really good three-year-old races during our carnival last year. He was disappointing last start, but they come back to the mile, good gait, and they step in early. He was about 4.20 in at $2.80, so he was my best of the day. Race four, number one, Flying Grant, and then I was pretty keen. Race six, number one, Sanderstam from the Garrett Lynch stable. This horse has always been quite a talented stayer and has really wound the clock back winning three of its last four starts. The latest at Strath was quite impressive. I don't think this race is a lot harder, and when Garrett's team is in form, they usually hold it, so I thought race six, number one, Sanderstam would be very hard to beat, and I'm going to also have something on one of Garrett's in the last race. That's race 10, number 11, Belle from Hell. They bet $15 this horse. She's into $6.50 now, but she was a real eye-catcher last start over $1,500 at Morfaville. Goes up to $1,800 today. Look, she's only won the one race of 23, Belle from Hell, but I reckon she's ready to win again. Good gait. Taylor Hutchison rides. She takes one and a half kilos off. She gets along really well with Garrett's team, and I had something on at the $15 early, and so hopefully the overs gods look after us, mate, but good luck to you in the cup, mate. Thanks, mate. It's pretty exciting to have a runner in the big race, so all the best, and yeah, we'll be cheering from Adelaide.
Speaker 4All right, Dan, who do you like in the cup?
Speaker 15Look, I thought Pointer Law would be very hard to beat on the back of that Geelong Cup win. That was quite awesome, and I just thought if Kieran can just get that horse to settle at that little bit that he'll need to. He'll be very, very hard to beat. I thought it was one of the best Geelong Cup wins I've seen, so I was happy to stay with him. Good luck, mate.
Speaker 4Enjoy Morphville today. Thanks for that, Lincoln. Cheers, Gareth. Mickey Gaddon joins us live from Flemington.
Speaker 15He's ready to go for our coverage starting at 10:30 after giddy up on all of our SEN platforms.
Speaker 4Hello to you, Mickey G. What a day it is. A little bit chilly out here at the moment. Okay. But looking forward to ribbing in. Where do we go with your best on a big day at Ramblin'? Well, it's been a good day. It's been a great day.
Speaker 16What a day it is.
Speaker 4Okay. Where do we go with your best on a big day at Ramblin' as well? The big dance, the highlight. Yeah, we'll go to race seven, number two.
Speaker 16I'm in to win. I think this horse is set up to get this job done today, so it looks a very winnable race. Race seven, number two. I'm in to win. And Emma and Art Morata will go. Yeah.
