Giddy Up Full Show (02/11/26)

This episode of Giddy Up, hosted by Gareth Hall on Melbourne Cup Eve, combines a review of a big weekend of racing with an in-depth preview of the Lexus Melbourne Cup. David Gately joins for his Monday breakdown, reflecting on a memorable Derby Day at Flemington, where 88,000 spectators witnessed The Next Episode win the Coolmore Classic and Stormy Marco take the Victoria Derby for Chris Waller and James McDonald. Lady Shenandoah's Empire Rose Stakes victory is also praised, while She's Alibi's luckless Golden Eagle defeat as the $1.50 favourite is discussed at length, with connections opting to send her to the paddock rather than back her up. Harry Coffey's determination to ride Chocolates despite a broken collarbone draws admiration, and American trainer Wesley Ward reveals plans to bring Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint winner Baccio to Australia for the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes. The Melbourne Cup preview team, featuring Mickey Gannon, Dean Watling, Zach Tunbridge, and international expert Kevin Blake, analyses every runner. Gately nominates Trust Your Instinct as his top pick, with Point of Law and Chocolates among the dangers. Goody Two Shoes is widely regarded as an attractive price, while doubts are raised over several internationals' acclimatisation and stamina. The panel also considers riding tactics, barrier draws, track conditions, and the importance of luck in the race.

Speaker 1This is Giddy Up on this Monday, the 2nd of November, and it is a big show coming your way. It doesn't get any better, really, on Melbourne Cup Eve. We've got Wayne Hawks and Johnny O'Neill, who will join us a little later on for the means test. Can't wait to catch up with Kevin Blake, the international racing expert. Does great work for ITV Racing and at the races there, which is the Sky Racing of Ireland and England. And ITV is basically the Channel 7 of Ireland and England. And he's also Joseph O'Brien's racing manager. So he'll join Mickey Gannon, Dean Watling, and also Sack Tumbridge with our Melbourne Cup preview. We'll analyse each and every runner. To kick off the show, of course, we've got David Gately and Gator's Game Plan. So looking forward to that as well. So we'll relive a big weekend of racing. Derby Day was something else. Flemington at its best with 88,000 there. It turned out, and most of the crowd anyway, and they're black and white. It was great to see so many terrific, great performances. James MacDonald and Chris Waller had another big day when it matters most with a Group 1 double. And Kieran Ma teamed up with Mark Sauer, who wins another Coolmore there aboard the next episode. And there was plenty of action and drama there at Randwick, especially with the Golden Eagle when She's Alibi was defeated with not much luck, mind you, at $1.50. So it's a massive show coming your way. All thanks to Bet365. You can join our conversation anytime you want on the Gareth's Horse and Hound text line 04499 736 736. But let's get stuck into our show with the Monday breakdown and then a little bit of a Gators game plan with David Gately on this Monday morning.
Speaker 2On Giddy Up, it's time for the Melbourne Breakdown with David Gately. Hello to you, Gator.
Speaker 3I had a very good morning. Just a lazy 90,000 out there at Flemington. Yes. And what a great vibe it was. Three big group ones, two up and coming. Two stars and a more seasoned winner, Lady Shenandoah, who's right at the top of her game.
Speaker 1Yeah, she was superb, wasn't she? And there's nothing better really than 88,000 there at Flemington on Derby Day. It's just a magnificent place, isn't it, when it's like that, Flemington? The aura when you walk through those gates is unbelievable. And it doesn't disappoint, does it, Flemington, to kick off the carnival on Derby Day?
Speaker 3No, I think the word privilege is thrown around a lot these days. And so it should be for us that get to work in this great industry. And, yeah, the roar when the next episode exploded was unbelievable. You know, I've been in the game a fair while now, and so have you. And I saw you out there with your little cap on. That was good looking. And, no, it was, you know, hair's standing up sort of moment. Then, you know, it wasn't just the group ones. There were some terrific wins outside of the group ones. And we saw Private Eye sit wide and win. You saw Regal Ambition and Diama. So a fabulous Derby Day, mate, and it's only a quarter time.
Speaker 1Yeah, and the Derby Day had it all. There were so many terrific stories as well. Flying for Fun for Bryce Hayes. He lived his dream to have a Derby winner. Jeez, Private Eye is a beauty. We'll get to him in just a moment. We had some terrific performances as well early on in that program. So it had it all. And then, you know, we had a lot of great stories. And then in Sydney, Skyhook, too good for decorum. And Baywack was third there. The story of the race, however, was she's out by having no luck there in the Golden Eagle. And then Pericles, Bjorn Baker. I caught up with him at the races. He goes, who said that Pericles couldn't sprint? And he defeated Headwall and Cabalas in that Russell Boarding Stakes. Ninja was fourth. Sorry, I did get confused there at the start. I knew Pericles had won the Russell Boarding. It's been a big weekend. But, yeah, Sydney had some great racing. And that was what. Racing's all about, isn't it, Gator, at the end of the day? That you might have the best horse in a race, but you need some luck from time to time.
Speaker 3Yeah, it's funny. I walked into the course and.
Speaker 1We just might have lost Gator. Are you there, mate?
Speaker 3Yeah. Sorry, I was just saying. We still need luck. You need a bit of luck. You know, some things are out of your control. And, you know, I think. So, you know, for the. For the fans of She's an Alibi Connections and Luke, it just. The luck just deserted you. You know, you probably expect a couple of those horses in front to take you further and gaps to come. But they just never did.
Speaker 1No. Let's have a look back at Flemington on Saturday as we kick off the breakdown. And it was a terrific day's racing. The highlight there, the derby, it is derby day. But the Cornwall gets everybody excited where we get to see some of our best sprinters thunder down that straight at Flemington. And this is what happened. It happened in Saturday afternoon's Group 1 Cornwall Classic. And it was the next episode getting the better of St. Gothard in a terrific finish.
Speaker 4The next episode under focus and Mbube. Paradoxium approaching the 300 metres with Natural Fling having a crack at it. St. Gothard brought towards the middle. They were followed by the next episode down the outside about to unleash. As they reach the 200, the next episode took the front from St. Gothard. Mbube late the outside. So it's the next episode. Next episode at the 50. St. Gothard trying to have a crack at the next episode. Digs in and wins. The next episode from St.
Speaker 1Gothard. Mbube. So the next episode getting there, defeating St. Gothard. Mbube. What a story he is as well. Purchased for $20,000 and finishes third in a Cornwall. What did you make of the race there, Gator? Did the best horse win or did he have the best luck with the draw there on Saturday?
Speaker 3No, look. He certainly drew well given the pattern of the day. And then. You know, it was perfectly ridden. I think where the race was won was just his change-up speed. Yeah. You know, he went from four lengths off him to in front in the blink of an eye. And that's what good athletes do. Good horses. They quicken. Then St. Gothard, who got the run in plenty of time, really made him race with the blinkers on. And right in the back of my mind is, okay, it's his first go at 1200. Yes, he's exploded. But can he now show tenacity at the end of his race? And fired off St. Gothard. And it's amazing. You know, this is all this within one or two seconds. And then my brain flicks back to his day in the win where he really had to chase and knuckle down. And he was able to fire off St. Gothard, who's clearly no slouch. You know, brought in the wall woven form. You know, he not only just won a Corfu Goonies, but ran quite well in a Cox by eight. So, I think that the best horse won. He had the right run. And I like the mix of A, change up speed, and then B, the tenacity when the other horse came. It's a good combination if you want to be good.
Speaker 1Yeah. And it's been a great training performance by Kiramar as well. He knows that horse. He had faith in that horse, even after his couple of trials there in Sydney, where I think he was a little concerned. I think he admitted that himself, but he didn't panic. He got the horse to Melbourne, and he's beat a different horse this time around. And he was superb in the Dane Hill, and he was brilliant there on Saturday. St. Gothard with the blinkers. St. Gothard was on. You could hear James McDonald when he had a chat to Lizzie Jelson, Matt Nevitt, this morning, that it still hurts him that he got beat on St. Gothard. He believes he had the better horse. Okay. But he just, obviously, he believes that if he was where the next episode was, he would have won that race. But that's racing at the end of the day, isn't it?
Speaker 3Yeah, that's right. And obviously, respect all opinions and all views. Certainly, you know, Jay McDonald, I'd take his opinion over D. Gately. That's for sure. I don't know about that.
Speaker 1He can be biased from time to time.
Speaker 3Well, of course. And, of course, he's coming from a narrative of Team St. Gothard. So, look, what it is, it's a question without an answer. So, it's like asking me, where does the universe finish? I don't know. But we'll probably never know the answer. So, each to their own. I thought he – I don't know if there was that much difference. But, look, either way, both horses were terrific. Mbuba had the back of the next episode and kept closing. He measured up really well. The fillies were probably the disappointment, albeit with some excuses.
Speaker 1So, natural fling wasn't at her best. Satano Glow just didn't get cover and finished the long last. She just wasn't the same horse. I would imagine, Gaydo, it's a complete forgive for Satano Glow.
Speaker 3Yeah, off that speed inside the mall. You know, I think had you run second with that run, I think you say, I'm unlucky. Yeah, but they just weren't winning there and she faded.
Speaker 1Yeah, paradox him. He's just a work in progress. He just needs to settle. He's not going to win any races. We'll be competitive if he's that keen.
Speaker 3Yeah, you just need more strings to your bow, don't you? It's a great thing to be fast. You'd certainly take that. And you've got to be able to harness that energy, especially as you get towards the pointy end. And there's more pressure. You know, in any athletic endeavour, the higher you go up in grade, the more pressure there is. And so, as you say, he's a work in progress.
Speaker 1The other big feature for the three-year-olds on Saturday, of course, was the Victoria Derby. It's worth $3 million. It was a clash between the best staying prospects from Melbourne and the Sydney Siders who were coming off their champion stakes runs in Stormy Marco and Cormier. But at the end of the day, they're hard to beat wherever they go. And these big group ones, and it was Waller and McDonald who were the two that dominated once again with Stormy Marco in this year's Victoria Derby.
Speaker 4400 metres to go. The filly strides a length and a half in front of Cormier into the clear. Signetti is staying on his machine. And Stormy Marco right down the centre from Cold Shower and Drew Ribble. Stormy Marco went to the front. 250 metres to go. Two links in front of Cold Shower. Quick finish for Sheedy, then Drew Ribble. Stormy Marco clear. 100 metres to go from Cold Shower. And it's James McDonald for his second derby. Stormy Marco won at Cold Shower second.
Speaker 1Yeah, he never looked like getting beat, did he, really? Stormy Marco was given a peach there by McDonald from that gate. And he chimed in like they were standing still there in the concluding stages, Gator.
Speaker 3Yeah, it was an interesting race. I mean, it was a big field, but a lot of them just didn't stay the trip. No. Simple as that. You look at that from the 300, then the 200 and the 100, and some of them look like they're going backwards at the end of that, whereas he was the opposite. He was really strong. And that was a little query going in. Look, going into this race, I didn't know what to do. I think I could have made a case for 10 of them. And I did have a query on him and many others, the 2,500, but he's well and truly ticked that box. The way he was safe for one run cold, that made it. Made pretty much a long, sustained run and was too strong in the end. Cold shell was good after covering a bit of ground and the filly measured up really well. And that's been a theme of these races, hasn't it? The fillies were in one, two in the spring champion last week and quick finish measured up really well. There were quite sizable gaps through the field.
Speaker 1There were a little bit. Like when you have a look at the beaten margins, as you point out, they either got the trip or they didn't. And there was a few horses that run below expectation. Vallis and Kingsnitz, Cormier, they all got beat close to 10 lengths. So even Skill that we thought might be the best day in the race was beaten, what, 14 and a half lengths. So that was the story of that race. Stormy Marco had some question marks whether he would get a strong 2,500 metres. I guess we'll find out in the autumn whether he can continue to go on with it or his class in that field was just too much for his opposition. Gainer, could be a bit of both.
Speaker 3It could be. I mean, the interesting thing is when he's clashed against the real classy ones, he's been safely held. He's run quite well, but he's been safely held, hasn't he, by the likes of Blind Rays and, you know, the Warwoven form, that form line. So, you know, St Goddard, those sort of horses. So that's probably where he's at. But his sweet spot, maybe it's just endurance. You know, I don't see Kipchoge going to the Olympics and running in the mile race.
Speaker 1No. McFinnish is what now? She's at $10. We've bet $3.65 for the VRC Oaks. The Wakefield Stakes was the other lead-up race. We've got the Derby as a lead-up race to the Oaks these days. But the Wakefield Stakes is the traditional lead-up to the Derby. And Diamus was dominant. The big, spacious track of Flemington obviously suited her better. She's now $4.50 for the VRC Oaks. And a clear second favourite behind the superstar filly there for David Payne, Proxima Dea. Who beat Stormy Marco pretty easily in the Spring Champion Stakes the Saturday, two Saturdays ago now. So she's still the favourite. Quick finish at $10. Diamus, I reckon McDonald will ride her. So that'll be interesting. I think you'll ride her over your colour. So what did you make of Diamus? Can she beat the Sydney filly?
Speaker 3Well, she just crossed the line with Global Gold, didn't she? Yeah. In the flight stakes. And that's the girl that chased Proxima. And in the Spring Champion, beating Stormy Marco. So really easy to make a case. She does appear to be a work in progress. You know, I thought, I don't think she got around Caulfield at all well. I thought she'll get to Flemington. She'll get on her right leg and get to 2,000 metres. I'm pretty confident she'll run really well. She didn't really do any of that. Yet still won. So, yeah, so clearly still some things to iron out with her. But for that to be the case. And still win, you know, says a fair bit, I think. So, look, she well and truly has a seat on the table because she brings in the exact same form lines as a couple at the top of the market. So she's a key winning hope.
Speaker 1While we're talking about the three-year-olds, early on in that program, we had some terrific performances there. The Roaring Sun. It was a beautiful ride by Dee Lane. But once he saw some clear galloping room away, he went to defeat Unhinged. And then Regal Ambition. I'm looking forward to seeing. I'm looking forward to seeing what she can do in the autumn. She was dominant from that awkward draw back in trip as well in the Vanity Gator.
Speaker 3Yeah, it was quite an exciting win, wasn't it? Nice cold ride. Clear. Joined in at the right time. Gave them weight and still beat them. So it was a terrific win. I loved the run of Afari out of that race. And the Roaring Sun was good. I mean, yeah, he had the good run, sure. But he was just simply too strong, the last 100. Unhinged got the run in time. The inside lanes held up really well. The track played beautifully. It was fabulous racing. You know, across the track in the circle races, you could win from anywhere. And that's all punters ask for. So credit to all involved, Liam and his team, especially with a tricky forecast leading in. You know, we're quick to criticize, you know, and because we want the sport to flourish. There's no other reason why we do that. But we need to get better at track biases across the landscape. Melbourne, Sydney. Everywhere, country. But fabulous racing on Saturday. Roaring Sun, no need to overanalyze it. Start three. His last 100 was just too strong, front hinged. You know, he was good, but no match.
Speaker 1Totally agree there. The Roaring Sun, I think, has got a big future. So he'll go for a break now. I think he, I don't know that he's going, I don't think he will push on the sand down. So he might go for a break and then we'll see what he can do in the autumn as well. You're right there with Flemington. He does an extremely good job, Liam O'Keefe. That's why he calls himself the Colonel. Because he gets it right all the time, Liam O'Keefe. And looking forward to seeing what happens there on Melbourne Cup Day with that rail out three metres. We'll talk about that a little later on with you, Gator. But it's 20 minutes past eight. This is the breakdown on this Monday morning. Gareth Hall, David Gately with you. We'll take a break and we'll come back with plenty more straight after this.
Speaker 2Join the conversation. Text us. On 0499 736 736. Live across Australia. This is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall.
Speaker 4400 metres to go. Pillow fight. Sassapiel. Surf and Bird. Lady Shenandoah's trucking up and Concord Connie behind those. 250 to go. Sassapiel joined by Lady Shenandoah. Given her head from Concord Connie. Then Surf and Bird. Lady Shenandoah. 150 out. Draws three legs. Concord Connie. Idle flyer late. But Lady Shenandoah. Lady Shenandoah. She's just a winner. Lady Shenandoah first. Concord Connie second.
Speaker 1Idle flyer. Yeah, she is a winner, Lady Shenandoah. She makes it back-to-back. Root ones this preparation in Melbourne. And I'm so happy for her because she deserved it for a long time after her three-year-old filly season. She'd been around the mark, but she'd be, she's like, where would you place her? Was she a sprinter or was she a middle-distance horse? Chris Waller's decided to make sure that he's concentrated on the middle-distance races with her this weekend. It's spring and it's worked. She had a little bit of luck that Pride of Ginny didn't come up for the Empire Rose, but she wins the Empire Rose easily. She was given a great ride by McDonald as well. And she won the Chirac before that gator. And then when she went back to her own sex at the weights, I know hindsight's a beautiful thing. I know you're all over her, but yeah, she did look like she was going to be mighty hard to beat there on Saturday.
Speaker 3Yeah, she was probably one of them. Well, according to Gerard Middleton, I was out there for Channel 9, of course, and said she was the second best back runner with Tab and She's an Alibi was the best back. So it was a mixed bag for them, but she was, you know, simply too good. So you referenced the ride, but she didn't need a good ride here. She could have sat anywhere and beat them just clearly, just in the right frame of mind as an athlete. And so she won the Chirac. So she's only ever been beaten once in a mile, and she ran really well that day. Idle Flyer went past her, but she was good chasing a hot speed. That day was a Pride of Jenny race. You beat home Jenny there. But on Saturday, it was a pretty soft win, wasn't it? So what I took out of it was her win prior to that. So she had 58 kilos against the males, and she had to really dig deep to win. So often, these athletes, when they get into a, you know, have a hard run and a real, get in a real dogfight, they can really launch off that. And that's what I saw on Saturday.
Speaker 1Yeah. I think she'll go to the all-stakes now. She's around 750 there with bet 365. I don't know how many horses from the Russell boarding will head to Melbourne for the CFL Stakes. Baywax, the favourite from Jimmy Starr. competed in a Russell boarding over the 1,400 metres in and all stakes, Gaylor?
Speaker 3Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, she's competitive for sure. Obviously, back to 1,400 would be some sort of challenge. I assume the race is at Sandown. It is. I assume they've dug up Caulfield, which is good. But, yeah, so she's clearly competitive. I mean, she just raced against the males, didn't she? Yeah. And beat them in a handicap. So, of course, weight for age, I think it's advantage her against some of those boys.
Speaker 1What do you make of Pericles and the Russell boarding stakes? Obviously, like Jimmy Starr and Headwall were the horses to beat coming out of the Everest. Headwall loomed up like he was going to get past Pericles, but, geez, he was strong, Pericles. And it's been some training performance by Baker, of course, to get him to perform like he has since he's been in his camp.
Speaker 3Yeah, I must admit, I thought they'd head to Flemish. I was in Flemish with this horse, and I was tipping him at Flemish in the Damien Oliver. But, you know, they made the decision to go to the Russell boarding, and it turned out to be a fabulous decision, you know, given the massive prize money. And I think what probably tipped him in the favour was his barrier draw, and that's what won him the race. You know, you've still got to be good enough to win, make no mistake. But to have the rails trail and get the inside run inside Cabalas, but off the rail was perfect, especially given the race shape. Nothing really ran on in this race, even though it was won at track record time. Headwall was good. Cabalas, gallant. Ninja did a lot of work early and still loomed to win it. I think it probably cost him the race, you know. But, again, that's similar debate to the Sengotha one. We'll never know. And the likes of Jimmy Starr and those horses that went back, the race shape just didn't give them a hope.
Speaker 1No. Pericles, he's going to the all-stakes, so he will take his place in that race at Group 1 level. Who would you prefer, Pericles or Lady Shed and Dyer over 1,400 metres at Sandown?
Speaker 3Yeah, great question. I think they'd both be right at the top of my thoughts, and they'd probably come down to barrier draw and rail and weather and those sort of things as to who we pick on top.
Speaker 1The Golden Eagle was the feature race there on Saturday at Randwick, worth $10 million. The favourite, the hot favourite was She's Alibi. What did she SP at? She SP'd at around $1.50. So she was heavily supported, She's Alibi. But, unfortunately, luck wasn't on her side on Saturday, and it was Skyhook who took the honours for the red-hot Chad Schofield.
Speaker 5A couple of horses off the fence from Apocalypti. Then Regal Award from Skyhook. Oh, She's Alibi's in an awful position here at the 250. It's bivouacked in front from Skyhook. Lengthening and decorum on the outside. It's Skyhook and decorum going up to join bivouacked for the lead. Clear from Estabella. Decorum and Skyhook. Nothing in it. Skyhook and decorum. They hit the line. I think Skyhook are nose-to-decorum.
Speaker 1Just gets there over decorum. A lot of our listeners are in decorum, obviously, being a My Racehorse horse, and they gave us a good push for decorum there on Friday. Hopefully, they backed it each way at $71. But. We were just watching She's Alibi gaiter, and you knew from basically the halfway mark that Luke Nolan might need a little bit of a miracle. They rode against him. They rode to beat her, of course, which is understandable. She was the horse to beat. But throughout those middle stages, when you have a look at the aerial shot, what else could Luke Nolan do, in my opinion? He just had no luck.
Speaker 3No, 100%. It's a field of 16. It's a field of 16 athletes, and you need clear running, and she wasn't able to obtain that. When the race was over, how was she steaming through the line, though? Yeah. Yeah, so that's racing, isn't it? And as the immortal Damien Oliver said to me once, I can't jump over them. Otherwise, I probably would, but it's just not the way it works. But they're entitled to ride. They're not allowed against her, aren't they? As you say, she's $1.50. It's competitive racing, big field. They're not there to make it easy for you. And I think the asset that's missing from She's an Alibi's arsenal is just her inability to quicken off a dime. And the greats do that. Like, I never remember seeing Winx really held up. Maccabi Deva never got held up despite fields of 500 in Melbourne Cups because they're able to quicken into gaps. She doesn't seem to have that asset to her. That's string to her bow just yet. Look, I may be overanalyzing it, but I think that's her Achilles heel.
Speaker 1I reckon more of her Achilles heel is that she can't put herself into the race early doors like an Autumn Glow can. Like last year in the Eagle, Autumn Glow, like McDonald just rode her like she was the best horse and kept her out of trouble, basically. And she had a tough run, but she was too good for her rivals where I haven't seen Nolan. All right, then, girl. I'm not going to ride. You sit sprinting here and then hope for a little bit of luck. I'm just going to put you into the firing line early and keep you out of trouble. If I'm three wide without cover, I don't really care because your class will get you over the line. But she probably hasn't got that asset where she's got that tactical speed like an Autumn Glow does.
Speaker 3Yeah, look, I mean, yes and no. She sort of missed the start first up and ended up on the back of Autumn Glow. So I think she has that preparedness. She's got that propensity or that capability, let's say. But her best asset and her best wins have been, you go back and look at the Doncaster, phenomenal, where she's been able to harness that energy first half of a race. Yeah. That's where her A-plus performances have come. When they've tried to put her in a race, she's run really well, but she doesn't have the same gusto at the finish. It's the way I'm reading it.
Speaker 1A bit like Cosmic Crusader in a way.
Speaker 3A little bit. Yeah. And a million other athletes. Yeah. You know, they're not motorbikes. Yeah. Yeah. If they were, how easy would this game be? I reckon I'd be a millionaire.
Speaker 1There was talk that maybe that they'll back her up after having no luck, because it was like a troll for her anyway. So they thought, well, there might be a chance that we might see her against Autumn Glow in a champion's mile. But Peter Moody has been adamant from the get-go that he wants to look after her in her four-year-old season. He's given her a few runs. He didn't go to the King Charles because he didn't want to have two trips there to Sydney within a couple of weeks. So he went to the Might and Power instead. He probably didn't expect to go a track record time and get beat by the land legend. But apart from that, her campaign's been pretty solid, hasn't it, really? And it was a forget run there on Saturday. She'll go to the paddock now. So definitely no champion's day for she's alibi. And we'll get to see her in the autumn. I reckon look out in the autumn as well, Gator.
Speaker 3Yeah, look, I'm really excited. We all are, to see her back. It was a bit of a strange sort of preparation. I think we had higher expectations. She still won a group one, and she won it brilliantly, the Maccabi Diva. Obviously beaten first up, but by a superstar at 1400. Beaten in track record time, as you referenced. You know, beat home the Cox Plate runner-up. Beat home the Caulfield Cup winner still. And then that on Saturday. So you'd love to rewrite the script, but it's not how it works.
Speaker 1Hey, horses to follow from Sydney and Melbourne. We touched on most of those Melbourne races as well. One under Bryce Hayes flying for fun. He lived his dream. He's done a great job with this mare. He's only got a small team, but flying for fun. She deserved that victory in the Asahi Super Dry Sprint. Other key performances, Private Eye, we mentioned. And Ndola just loves Flemington, doesn't he?
Speaker 3Yeah, he was a good win, wasn't he? Obviously, Swain's day, $26, seven and a half, would have been nice. But we had our chance, you know. Ndola saw us coming and fought us off. They were both really good. Both had 58 kilos as well. I think Meridius is a criminally underrated horse. Keep an eye on a couple out of this race. Verdot, if it gets to his right race now, hopefully he can bob up 10 to one and win for us. She's flying, I think, that horse, as long as the tracks are dry. And I mentioned Afari earlier. Just a couple of sneaky good runs from beaten brigades who, if they're still around in a week or two, I'd like to be with them.
Speaker 1All right, that's a look at the races there in Sydney and Melbourne. The Arby Day and Golden Eagle Day, as we broke down those meetings, we're going to take a break. On the other side of it, we're going to analyse this year's Lexus Melbourne Cup with the great man David Gately next.
Speaker 2Text us on 0-4-double-9-7-3-6-7-3-6. Live across Australia, this is Giddy Up with Gareth Hall. On Giddy Up, it's time for Gators Game Plan with David Gately. Giddy Up, Gators Game Plan with David Gately.
Speaker 1Let's preview the Melbourne Cup. And just repeating the news this morning, Harry Coffey rides Shocklets, the third favourite. He's told me that he's very confident he'll be right to go tomorrow. Of course, he broke his collarbone after falling off Pondolohe there on Saturday at Flemington. He says the surgery has worked. He has a couple more conversations today with the doctor and his surgeon before giving the all clear, but he's very positive about the situation. So, Harry Coffey at the moment says he'll be back. Giddy Up, Giders Game Plan with David Gately. can ride um you just got to make sure that you're mentally right to go and harry says i'll be ready to go don't worry about that so at the moment harry coffee will take his place aboard chocolates in that lexus melbourne cup and as he just pointed out in my conversation with him today he does still need a couple of conversations with the doctor and surgeon um just to make sure that they're they're 110 happy that he's right to go but at the moment it is really positive that harry will be riding chocolates in the melbourne cup that would be some story gator i think we all
Speaker 3love him um and uh hearts and mouths weren't they on saturday but um relatively you know unscathed but um you know what a even if he doesn't make the start line mad respect um for all and even mark zara riding group one winners on saturday two weeks after a heavy fall so um you know i think these these riders should be admired and respected you know even we do but even you know more so than what we probably do
Speaker 1the most important game plan of the year of course is getting set for the melbourne cup and trying to work out how we can back a winner in our greatest race it is a difficult race always to to try and sort out with the different form lines from around the globe but we love it and we'll try our very best and gator point of law the $6.50 favorite after a terrific performance in that geelong cup trust your instinct at eight dollars hopewell rock at ten dollars chocolates at ten dollars juja cabal at eleven dollars so you are at 13 middle earth at 15 sons and lovers into 19 now after the barrier draw james j brad it continues to drift out to 19 emphajar 23 mr monico at 23 goody two shoes 26 sarans at 26 sakuma at 26 soul of spain at 30 to 1 knights choice at 40 to 1 kisly are at 40 to 1 windark c he was favorite for the caulfield cup or close to anyway um is out to 51 dollars now vauban 60 to 1 rule supremacy 61 asterix 61 dollars future history at 61 dollars one smooth operator at 71 dollars and the outsider of the field is strictly business at 81 dollars gator who wins this year's lexus melbourne
Speaker 3cup yeah look i'm really excited to see our greatest race and uh i'm going to tip trust you guys i'm going to tip trust you guys i'm going to tip trust you guys your instincts you know i've been um with him off the doubles for a while that nothing's happened since then to change my view he's passed all the scans which is a was obviously what wasn't uh didn't go as well for a couple of others that that we thought could run well in the great race but that's the nature of the beast that we dealt with i love his form around jan brugel who was but you know stable thought was unbeatable in this race before he he didn't quite make the start line he's just been el rifa who was well back to win the race last year what i like about him he handles he quickens you know a lot of these imports don't have that string to their bow so i'm happy with him on top i think point of law is a logical danger he's been here he's done it some of the others haven't yet um and you know he has to beat history to win at start number six but he's heading the right way about it um you can tie his form in small fry through defiantly hope for a rock and co i'll be shocked if shock glitz doesn't run well um she's had the perfect melbourne cup old school hopewell rock middle earth will be my fifth pick sons and lovers sixth and um be un-australian not to take a trifecta and first four around them yes
Speaker 1so that's what you that's how you'll play from a punting perspective there
Speaker 3gator yep 100 so um yeah i love love a try on a first four every every year and we sometimes we fluke it take a few in the quaddie and um and uh yeah can't wait to be out there on the big day the lead up to it is phenomenal um and the rock is going to be the roar of the crowd when they jump and go around past the barrier the first time you wouldn't want
Speaker 1to be anywhere else it's probably the the toughest race to do the form on in a way gator with all the different form lines yeah well the form
Speaker 3lines are there yeah the problem is who who who's here and acclimatized yes who's who's in the right frame of mind i just don't know until we get a horse psychologist and get these um beautiful equine athletes to speak to us that would really help my um helps with the footy tipping yeah but it doesn't necessarily help me with the racing because of those reasons outlined but in all seriousness it's you know the forms all into time we've touched on it you can tie them all in you know through opportunity through small fry but it what's what's much more relevant and much more pertinent is what frame of mind am i in and you know have i acclimatized am i fitting well and feeling good um and uh that's a really after the race sort of question and that's why
Speaker 1you can try and gather all the information that you can like there's a few horses that we're being told that haven't been like they haven't settled in as well as others from an international perspective um hopewell rock i think's one of those um there's a few horses like i don't think that like amphichar and also wine dark sea have had their issues as well but they're right to go for the cup but they haven't had that lead up like a few say the joseph o'brien horses have had heading towards that melbourne cup and then you've got to try and but when you ask the o'brien camp small fry is there he's he's probably not in their top echelon of chances when they arrived here for um trying to win the melbourne cup obviously he needed to win the geelong cup to get in but they reckon they've probably got better horses than small fry there at werribee but point of law obviously settled in well like the race and went to a new level when he won the geelong cup so you're right there yeah and they're going to go down that straight for the first time past the winning post 20 horsemen and they're going to go down that 24 horse field um and a few of these internationals have never seen anything like that so it's a guessing game from that perspective you're right isn't it gator that you just don't know until the questions won't get answered until after the race which is no good to us really well
Speaker 3it's not a massive help but it's fun it's fun to dissect but um but you are well rewarded you know with the massive pools um a massive betting interest on our greatest race if you get it right you're well rewarded as a rule now
Speaker 1gator i usually play this game with mark hunter but mark hunter will be joining me tomorrow after nine o'clock for a special hunter's edge so yes or no can they win or not you ready yep all right all right then one sons and lovers yep six top rated runner to trust your instinct yes top
Speaker 3rated runner three nights choice i'd risk him for middle earth uh yes and fifth top rated runner five or ban no six envigar um perhaps an exotics play ninth top rated runner seventh rule supremacy no eight wine dark sea uh exotics seventh top rated runner so yes or no uh i don't think he's a key winning hope no nine asterisks no ten goody two shoes uh exotics no eleven jujika bow uh exotics 12th top rated runner 12 hopewell rock uh here's a yes for me fourth fourth pick all right
Speaker 113 one smooth operator
Speaker 3no 14 sold
Speaker 1spain no 15 saran no 16 so
Speaker 3you are look i love him um and uh he's an exotics play under the odds 13th pick 17 future history no 18 james j braddock uh he is an exotics eighth
Speaker 1top rated runner 19 kislyar
Speaker 3nah gonna risk him 20 point of law point of law yes a second pick 21 strictly business no 22 mr monico
Speaker 1uh going really
Speaker 3well um exotics 11th top rated runner 23 sakuma zakuma no and 24
Speaker 1chocolates yeah i think she runs
Speaker 3enormous here third pick all right then
Speaker 1what about mate from outside of the cup there on cup day what are your best bets
Speaker 3uh race three number two star of mastodon i thought he'd run a great race in a carbine club they picked their easier option so he'll do for a best bet um race six number four sabaj and race eight number five ran our son so just put out a sneaky little cup day parlay for those three runners at flemington for the oz racing family and obviously they got a bit of play money from the parlay on saturday
Speaker 1yeah so well done gator you had a wonderful time on derby day so hats off to you um you dominated the channel nine coverings and you're going to win the cup day and you can subscribe to the oz racing family just go to ozracing.com.au um and you can subscribe with gator and you get your bible for melbourne cup day so all of your rated runners in each and every race to help you back plenty of winners gator yeah
Speaker 3look it's a lot of fun cup day it can be a challenge but um i wouldn't start the quaddie without us got to have a trifecta first four on australia not two in the cup and um it's uh a lot of fun and and because the pools are massive if you get two or three winners on the day you're generally in front i reckon yep good
Speaker 1luck gator enjoy cup day we appreciate your time as always can't wait thanks mate there's david gately for a special gators game planned 47 minutes past eight wesley ward the superstar trainer from america will be my special guest
Speaker 2next join the conversation text us on 0499 736 736 live across australia this is giddy up with gareth hall
Speaker 1welcome back to giddy up just after nine o'clock our special gator day Special preview of the Melbourne Cup with the weekend preview team. in Kevin Blake. So looking forward to catching up with Kevin. He's been superb promoting our great race, the Melbourne Cup, since he's arrived in this country. So looking forward to catching up with Kev. But straight after our break, this next break, we're going to catch up with Wesley Ward because he says he's got the quickest horse in the world and he's coming to Australia. It's Bartio who won the Breeders' Cup turf sprint in sensational fashion there during that Breeders' Cup meeting there on the weekend. So Wesley Ward to join me next here on Giddy Up.
Speaker 2Text us on 0499 736 736.
Speaker 1Welcome back to Giddy Up. It's 52 minutes past eight. Plenty of text messages coming through. G'day, Gareth. Love your show. Who is your favourite horse for the Melbourne Cup and why is it Juju Cabot? From the big pun as well, I wish you the best of luck. He has to be a chance. He has come a long way, like a few of the Melbourne Cup hopefuls this year. Like a So You Are, he's won his last four and won the Bendigo Cup there the other day. Chocolates is another one that's come from nowhere really to be a major player in this year's Lexus Melbourne Cup. Any update on She's Alibi backing up? She is in the paddock, Dan. So she won't be there on Champions Day. Do you think Royal Supremacy has any chance tomorrow? No, I don't. G-Man, here's a J-Mac stat. All-time Melbourne Cup Carnival Group 1 winners, Oliver, 26, J-Mac, 18 after Saturday. Just shows how good J-Mac is. Ollie's record might last one or two more carnivals. Yeah, 100%. He will rewrite the history books, J-Mac. He already is. Regal Ambition, fastest last 400 of the day. What a ripper of a filler. Yeah, she is a proper horse. I remember having a chat to J.A. Hayes before the Thousand Guineas. And I reckon that they believe there at Lindsay Park that Regal Ambition, this filly, is their next superstar. So looking forward to seeing what she can do in the autumn. Simply sensational performance. Has to be Chris Partham on Western Miss in Ascot Race 7. Simply unbelievable. Last at the 150-metre mark. The best turn of foot I've seen. That was from Ryan. Yeah, she was unbelievable there, Western Miss. But this was some performance during the Breeders' Cup meeting there Sunday morning by this sprinter that's coming to Australia,
Speaker 6Baccio. Time swings wide. Comanche Brave is in some traffic down toward the inside. Eight legs off the lead. Baccio into the final furlong. Opens up on a three-legged advantage. Bessie Shots goes to second. And she's so spicy, is in third. And a late charge from Cy Fair from fourth. Baccio has the lead, a deep stretch. Cy Fair is running on late from the outside. Cy Fair coming forward along with Sorrento, Sky. But they're all behind. Baccio! Baccio wins the Prevision Breeders' Cup Tournament.
Speaker 1Yeah, he's a star, Baccio. He dominated. And he's very quick. And his trainer is Wesley Ward. And he joins me now from Kentucky after winning the Breeders' Cup there. Turf sprint with Baccio. And the best news of all time after that race is that we found out that he's heading to Australia for the Black Cavalier Lightning Stakes. Wesley, welcome to Giddy Up. Thanks very much for your time.
Speaker 7Oh, thank you for having me on. I appreciate it.
Speaker 1How bloody exciting is it, mate, to have a sprinter like Baccio? He's obviously very quick. And it looks like now that you're coming to Australia, he's going to be in Australia.
Speaker 7Well, we're going to try. After his win, we put him in quarantine at Coolmore at Ashford. And I've always looked at this race. I ran a horse in it one time. I didn't actually physically myself go down there for it. But I've always tried to get some sort of a really good sprinter to come down. I'd love to come and hopefully win a race in Australia. Maybe be the first American. Do it. I don't know. But I didn't want to come until I really had a really, really good chance. I had a horse, a very nice horse named Golden Pal that won two Breeders' Cups and was looking at this race. But unfortunately, the race came up right into his stallion duty. So he couldn't have made the race and flying back. He'd have missed a lot. So this guy looks like one to come that would have a great chance to win. So you're
Speaker 1not scared to travel your horses. We see you every year there at Royal Ascot. You won the Nunthorpe with Barcho during the European season. But how good is this sprinter?
Speaker 7He's as good as they come. He's very, very fast. He's nearly unbeaten. He's unbeaten this year. He ran three times as a two-year-old last year and had two wins in the second. And his second was just only right on the line. He led every step of the way, but just about the last one. So he's a really, really high-quality sprinter. And he won the Breeders' Cup yesterday. Everybody's still flying high from there.
Speaker 1And was it always the plan to come to Australia? Or did you have to see him do what he did there yesterday in the Breeders' Cup turf sprint?
Speaker 7It was. When I won at Ascot, I sat down and spoke with the owners. The race wasn't. Wasn't. It was a listed handicap race there at Ascot, but it was Royal Ascot. And after he won the race in York, we really were thinking about doing that.
Speaker 1Yeah. It is exciting, Wesley. I've got to take a break in just a moment. So if it's okay, if you can hang on there for a couple of minutes. I've got a hard out that I need to take. But I think everybody's excited to see what he can do here in Australia. And after the break, I'm going to ask you the question about carrying and rising. Do you think that you could take. Take him on one day and have a crack at him? So I'll get your answer.
Speaker 7I'll tell you.
Speaker 1I'll get your answer in just a moment, Wesley. I'll let everyone hold in suspense there regarding that question and carrying and rising. It's quickly approaching. And of course, our filly tempted that you might clash against there in that lightning stakes in February. We'll have more of Wesley Ward next here on Giddy Up.
Speaker 2Text us on 0499-7000. 736-736. This is Giddy Up
Speaker 1on this Monday morning Melbourne Cup Eve. We've got our Melbourne Cup preview ready to go with the weekend preview team. And Kevin Blake will join the team in the next hour, especially with his insights for the international runners for this year's Melbourne Cup. And then the means test just after 10 o'clock with Johnny O'Neill and Wayne Hawks. It will be one hell of a means test. This morning. But we are honoured to have Wesley Ward, one of the world's best trainers on the line, live from Kentucky in the United States of America. Barcho is a superstar sprinter who's been unbeaten this season. He dominated Royal Ascot. He dominated the Nunthorpe at Group 1 level at York. And he smashed them in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint. And now he's coming to Australia to try and win the Black Caviar Lightning Sprint in February. Wesley, is he the fastest horse in the world? Is he better than Kevin? How are you rising in your eyes?
Speaker 7Well, I've never actually seen how you can rise it. No. Run. I've only heard about him. And his reputation is unbelievable. So, you know, I can only say for my horse, I mean, everything he's run with, he's beat. And we'd love to take him on if he ever came down there. In neutral ground in Australia would be great.
Speaker 1But that's. That's what racing's all about. It is. So, if you win the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes, which is over the 1,000 metres, and then I think you're keen to get back to Europe, would there be a chance that you would, if you got offered a slot for our great race, the Everest, would you be eager to get back to Australia for the spring? Or is it a little bit difficult around Breeders' Cup time?
Speaker 7I don't know. I mean, you have to take one race at a time. You've come out of this race. No issues. No hiccups. Everything great. He went right into quarantine because I wanted to get him down to Australia, if that was a possibility, as soon as possible. So, we went right after the race. We went right into. I did this one other time. I had a really nice horse named Down For Nowhere that I was trying to get to the Everest, and we were just beaten at Royal Ascot in a Group 1. And we put him into quarantine with the Kumar Stallions. And unfortunately, like you just asked me the question, we couldn't find a spot. So, we had to take him out of quarantine and wait until the Kumar Stallions went down, and he didn't get to get on the plane. I was disappointed about that. So, this is a little bit the same. I put him into quarantine so we'd at least have the option to put him on the plane, to get him down there as early as possible. If we talk and everything works out in the next two weeks, we can do all that with the Jockey Club, and everybody down there. So, we'll be putting some phone calls back and forth and through. And if it doesn't materialize, we'll take him out, and we'll just leave him right here at home. But I would love to go down there, and that's the reason why we have him in quarantine right now.
Speaker 1Yeah, that is exciting. And it'll be your first time to Australia. I know that you had Cannonball represent your stable there in the Lightning a few years back.
Speaker 7Yeah, a number of years. I wish I could have went. I was excited to go. He went from the Breeders' Cup, of which he was third, and then went on to. Hong Kong and our plan was to go from Hong Kong down there we did he was kind of tailing off um at that time when he went and i had a horse at that time that was named pleasant prince that was on the derby trail we got beat a half a thumbnail in the florida derby so i i had to stay with him and i couldn't go and i was really disappointed because i really love to see another part of the world you can start you know from what i see it's such a beautiful country in australia and if i'm hoping this all materializes here within the next two weeks because i'd love to bring my family down my two my two boys and my daughter and my grandson yeah so uh be great to get them down there we'd
Speaker 1love to have you mate we appreciate you coming on it is exciting to have a superstar sprinter like yours head to australia if it all works out hopefully it will um for the black caviar lightning steaks well done there on the weekend i know how big the breeders cup is for um you back home and to have one of the the highlight performances there um you should be proud we appreciate you coming on and um yep hopefully we'll catch up with you in 2027 wesley i i i if
Speaker 7i do go yeah and it all works out um i have a great friend for over 35 years named brian lynch he's an outstanding trainer here he was beating a half a thumbnail yesterday in the in a stakes race and um i asked him i said hey is there a chance that you go to australia with me if i run in this race i said because i've been kind of searching around and looking and there'll be nobody better than you to be my interpreter and he said i'll be your interpreter wesley i'm gonna come down i gotta he's gonna be my interpreter and he's coming down
Speaker 1with me this way i understand you fellas down there yeah that is sensational well you've done pretty good to try and understand me anyway so i appreciate you wesley thanks for joining us on giddy up mate um yep you're a star we love how you you're brave enough to travel your horses and um we can't wait to see barcho here in australia thanks for your time all right thank
Speaker 7you very much there's wesley
Speaker 1ward there five minutes past nine we'll take a break and then it is our melbourne cup preview on giddy up on this melbourne cup eve kevin blake um dean watling mickey gannon and zach tumbridge to join you straight after this
Speaker 2join the conversation text us on live across australia this is giddy up with gareth hall welcome back to
Speaker 1giddy up it's time now for our special melbourne cup preview here on giddy up on cup eve it's eight minutes past nine so let's welcome in the team first of all mickey gannon hello to you good morning to you g um in sydney dean watling is with us hello to you dino good morning team how are we i am well our zachie tumbridge from bet365 good morning to you morning guys how are we i am well and then of course this is one of the the great additions to the weekend preview team kevin blake the superstar from at the races itv racing the racing manager for joseph o'brien he's been everywhere in australia every time i turn on the tv he's on hello to you kevin blake uh great to
Speaker 8be here gareth uh it feels like we've been here for about six months we've done a lot of talking yes but it's nearly time to make the ring walk now we're fired up we are fired
Speaker 1up because there's a lot of different opinions out there some are against certain horses some are with horses but that's what makes this great game so great the different opinions yeah that shape the game and let's
Speaker 8sort out who's right and who's it looks like you're fired
Speaker 1up and ready to go and first of all we had the news that harry coffee might be ready to go like he broke his collarbone he had surgery there yesterday he will talk to the surgeon today but he says that you know what i'm feeling good i'm confident i can give this horse one hell of a ride and i was just talking to you off air like i'm like you're great jumps jockeys for instance ap mccoy who is in australia at the moment with jp mcmanus he's he's ridden through um some um difficult injuries throughout his career oh
Speaker 8yeah you gotta you gotta get him on air and ask him because he i recall one time and i won't have the specific number but he broke broke something like five ribs and punctured a lung and he somehow got through the doctor and kept riding he was going for the champion jockey title yeah like he is a maniac or was a maniac i'm sure he still is when he was riding you've just never seen a more focused maniacal pursuit of success than you get
Speaker 1with ap mccoy yeah legend i couldn't believe when i saw him there at flemington on saturday i was starstruck like him and ruby walsh legends of the game and ap's in town so looking forward to maybe catching up with him at the call of the card today let's get stuck into our melbourne cup preview we're going to go through each and every runner um we'll go to you first here zach to get if there's been any market support for any of these horses um and then we'll get the opinion of the team here so we'll start off with sons and lovers who's into 19 dollars now zach tunbridge much money for him there's
Speaker 9been a little bit it holds around six percent of the book at the moment but um no not a whole lot
Speaker 1okay trained by joseph o'brien um dylan brown mcmonigal takes the right obviously replacing ryan moore no pressure dylan um kevin just explain that decision then yeah
Speaker 8well look obviously the dylan had to come out that was dylan's pick um he's joseph's stable jockey um look lots of moving parts here obviously lots of different sets of connections um and there was a shuffle and that's where we are and uh with dylan there'll be there'll be positive associations here because in riad and saudi in um february he was to ride goody two shoes had to come off her late switched on the sons and lovers got the money so he's he's got a great record on the horse and he's the one that got the the bino draw and um look at people can't say we didn't tell them gary that was the one i was telling him was overpriced for the last couple of weeks so after the draw i i could see him continuing to shorten i think he's got a great profile 57
Speaker 1and a half not too much weight um i've
Speaker 8heard that said but look he's he's earned it you know he he's earned it um he's won a group two you know he is when he was in riad that was a handicap you know he's off in in terms of our rating conversions he was off a very similar rating and look he's he seems to be steadily improving and i don't feel he's had a setup that is a little bit better than he's had in the last couple of weeks i think he's got a little bit better allowed him to show his absolute maximum and the type of race the melbourne cup is i think it's the set of circumstances that could do that you know he wants to sit just off the leaders in cover be ridden with confidence and come late and just the the type of races he's running he hasn't got the opportunity to do that love this preparation run last time look we're going to repeat it again you know i've heard some really interesting interpretations of some of joseph's horses last few runs all of these horses have been trained with one race in mind for months and months and i would put joseph brian up as one of the best target trainers in the world so don't trouble your minds about their last runs that it wasn't about their last runs it's about tomorrow um ground for him it rattled off it yeah yeah i haven't dared look at the forecast for today it looks like the rain was reducing um he'll he'll rattle off so good track for
Speaker 1him is that where he's at his best or it doesn't really matter
Speaker 8yeah he rattled off it in saudi arabia yeah you know so he'll handle an ease most of ours will handle a bit of an ease yeah um but he rattles off fast ground all right
Speaker 10mick gannon i really loved his work there late 63 63 kilos that's pretty impressive so i don't think the weight's going to be an issue looking at what he did there lands in a beautiful spot in run aim equals six pick gareth so right there dino yeah share
Speaker 11the same sentiment so he's sort of the bomb proof top weight chance gonna get 3200 meters and i think the map's the biggest thing we've seen a couple of speed horses come out and he's tactically versatile you watch his replays whether or not you like the weight as a setup for the melbourne cup that's the question you gotta ask yourself but in saying that at the current price i think he's a rock hard top 10 chance in the race i think you know what you're going to get with this horse gee and that's a really really strong run up on speed likely um with that inside draw if
Speaker 1i wasn't as loyal to james j braddock i would have had sons and lovers my top 10 pick at the price but anyway um you got to stick with your own number two trust your instinct in the famous colors of jp mcmanus as he looks to win his first melbourne cup trained by joseph o'brien and ridden by our best jock in james mcdonald what's the money for him like there with bet 365 zach
Speaker 9yep really good so they took a lot of 850 it's the third biggest hold in the book so far at around 12 percent but um yep one of the most popular ones
Speaker 1he's eight dollars here kev i think the question mark with him from gate 18 can he stay strong to two miles in our great race okay you don't
Speaker 8know until you know i strongly suspect he will you know the car takes a fair bit of getting a mile six and look it's more so does he get a kind of position would be would be my thing you know i wouldn't like to i wouldn't like to pigeonhole him you know he's a horse you don't have to go very far back in his form to see him sitting you know too wide prominent no cover and winning stakes races you know we've just tended to ride him a little bit quieter since he's gone up and trip um look we just want him to relax and look the right man to do it and james um he's look he's a slightly older horse he might look more exposed but when you um and you can see all the videos and racing.com and all the footage when you look at him walk past you he does not look like an older horse he is moving incredibly well and again look this has been if this is it for him this is his big day in his life is tomorrow
Speaker 1so the planning to go into this horse winning a cup for jp like how long has the planning been oh a year yeah more than a year yeah with the
Speaker 8vast majority of these with a younger horse like james j it obviously became clearer you know post derby but really with a lot of these we start talking about the melbourne cup as a whole and i think it's going to be a lot of fun and i think it's going to soon as it finishes.
Speaker 1Yeah. And then you've got to work out the best way to get here. with the right weight and yeah
Speaker 8and that's that we have our target zone we we we know where we want them to be rating wise and you know we'll discuss it's a bit more relevant to some of the others but we know what rating we need to hit so that we can feel comfortable that they'll get in and then you're you're getting them ballot exempt and then your folk then joseph takes over and it's his focus to to make sure that they're in the absolute best condition they can possibly be on the day that
Speaker 1matters because they're there to win these races in the lead up to obviously um the melbourne cup but there's also situations where they're in those races there back home to make sure that they probably um you know what's that what's the word i'm looking for where they have good runs that they've probably got it against them in a way to to feature in the future and they might
Speaker 8be at the height of their fitness yeah you know obviously you guys are super familiar you know trainers over here use the use the race course as stepping stones um and you're delighted if they go and win but you know that they're going to improve in their condition from that so um look that's all part of being a target trainer yeah um
Speaker 10mickey gannon just one for kev on sons and lovers forgot to ask echo cost first time
Speaker 8yeah i'm interested in this actually because we don't declare this at home no and like this this is a relatively routine thing at home as well we don't declare it so we don't have the data i've heard a number of people i heard oh god who was it and i listened to a very good podcast last night and he said it's the worst gear change in racing and i'm fascinated to i'd love to see the
Speaker 10data on it well it's interesting because a lot of trainers i speak to have no issue with it all and in fact plenty of them suggest that they say their horses improve significantly so yeah you do you on those there's a
Speaker 8reason you use it but you know ultimately you're doing it to to help the horse and to make sure the horse is going to be at their very best so really you know and i've been involved in horses that i've got them on and it's you know if joseph feels it's appropriate i'm you know i've no issue with it it's never something that would concern me essentially you're going to get the best out of the horse by having it on you're not putting it on for any other reason people read it as a red flag i guess
Speaker 1they do because they think why you why are you putting it on like there must be an issue why would you do it otherwise
Speaker 8look if there is an issue you're you're taking affirmative action to try and to try and ease the issue if there is one but um again i'd love if any of your your listeners or viewers have the the long-term date on it i'd be i'd genuinely be fascinated because like i say we don't declare
Speaker 1that at home dino trust your instinct yep
Speaker 11like this he's got an interesting profile like kevin mentioned he's an older horse uh in this race which they tend don't have the best record but you reference that stepping stone race as well he did that in his last start before heading out here he's obviously won the current cup beating our riffa that form ties in and looks outstanding then you go off his last start where he probably looked like he was having a stepping stone run for the melbourne cup scandinavia won that i love the form from queenstown umbrugal as well so he's the one here who looks primed ready for it and i think if you do judge him off his last start that's been a lazy form analyst because you go back through it and like i mentioned he has a beautiful setup the gates the slight query but you offset that with james mcdonald but everything else reads really really well for trust your instinct this year i
Speaker 10forgot to ask you mickey that's okay and dino's great segway because dino's nailed it i i think the map's really good so you look at this the key speed influences outside goody two shoes kisly are royal supremacy wine dark sea maybe even jjb james j braddock rolling forward i think that gives j make a great opportunity just to slot in so midfield bit of cover i think i think he maps really well i had him there like right there third pick what kind of horse does he profile like watching a few of his replays it doesn't look like he has a sharp turn of foot or anything like that is he just going to be with that second wave just building into the race car
Speaker 8he's looked a little bit pacier since he's gone up on a trip you know he had more of a grinding profile um over shorter trips but but his record over like we we kind of persisted in running him over a mile in the quarter because they're just that's in the program in ireland he loves the cura and there's just a bunch of races that he could win there at 10. so so we kept him at that but he's looked pacer since he's gone up in trip and just a quick note because again i've heard it mentioned elsewhere on the collateral form um i wouldn't be reading too much into al rifa's position in the car cup he picked up a career-ending injury that day and wasn't quite at his best and i guess with the car whenever you're looking at cara form particularly this year the round track rides very pace favoring you know he was dropped in in the irish and ledger he was taking on the best stairs around and he didn't need to do any more that day you know that again that was a stepping stone to hear and he did exactly what we hoped he'd do is he a better horse than our ripper um no no i'll refer as a genuine 120 plus group one horse um he's in in terms of pure ability he's he's not that horse no and
Speaker 1obviously he doesn't have to carry as much weight as our
Speaker 8rift exactly yeah it's all relative and you know i know i know there's a lot of focus on you know physical weight carried but for me it's all about relativity you know sons and lovers wouldn't be wouldn't be near top weight in another year but he's he's carrying the weight he he should do relative to his opposition and
Speaker 1the hustle and bustle of flemington down the straight for the first time
Speaker 8we trust your instinct yeah
Speaker 1yeah yeah he hasn't run
Speaker 8in many races like this you know most of his races have been smaller field stakes races so look until they do it you don't know but you in your mind's eye you would just love to see him well covered up being ridden with a bit of confidence and showing his pace late number
Speaker 1three knight's choice he won the cup a few years back at a hundred to one is there any money for him this year zach tunbridge
Speaker 9not a hell of a lot you're getting 41 bucks for the old knight's choice can he win dino
Speaker 11oh i don't think he can win the race g can he run well uh it's a tricky one he's sort of the horse has won the cup already they don't tend to have the best record outside of that when you do back them up is he going as well as that year well i think he was going that well the year he won he was 101 in the price so i don't want to take him on but i don't we with him g i'll take
Speaker 10him on gareth yeah yeah next yeah
Speaker 1all right then for middle earth he's got like this is the is your miracle form 8 of 12 9 of 18 8 of 13 7 of 8 and 8 of 16. but all along kiramar the champion trainer who's got seven horses in this year's lexus melbourne cup has said that middle earth is his best chance zach tunbridge how much money for middle earth who was placed in this race last year
Speaker 9yeah it's been um been pretty good it's 15 bucks now a little bit of a drift we were 13 yesterday but um holding about six percent pretty popular mick gannon barrier one's a concern i think it's a
Speaker 10little bit of a drift we were 13 yesterday but um holding about six percent pretty popular mick gannon barrier one's a concern i think it's a little bit of a drift we were 13 yesterday but um holding about six percent pretty popular mick gannon barrier one's a concern for me i think it'll be back well and truly back closer to last than first uh you've got mark zara so that's a big plus of course but uh i couldn't find a spot for him in my top five and probably more than willing to take him on with a negative map there so look has the ability builds different setup this this year i think he's in a bit of strife map
Speaker 1you'll need a great ride from zara because he's one of those forces dino that needs to build his momentum um and he'll need the luck at the right time i would imagine yeah
Speaker 11i think you two are summarized well i think the other key point i want to make too is if you use ratings and a a guide to myself is anything past 20 starts you're sort of really really hard to run a career peak as a horse and he probably hasn't got the career peak there to win a melbourne cup so that's a query for mine you add the barrier um and interesting here kieran says a better chance than point of law i don't tend to agree with that i think the market backs that
Speaker 1up too well he i asked him that question even after point of law won the geelong cup and he's still with middle earth and he's this is the one horse that kieran has put all the eggs in middle earth's basket have been directed towards that melbourne cup um do you have an opinion there with any of those locals i have
Speaker 8huge respect for kieran maher but i can see the case with middle earth um you know more of a solid type to me that could that could run a top five or six potentially on his best day and whereas you're you know we'll speak about point of law but he has a bit more of the x factor open to more improvement etc but but massive respect for kieran and he's clearly just shooting the lights out over here for the last
Speaker 1while on fire vauban is horse number five was sixth at flemington um in last year's melbourne cup before that he was heavily supported to win a melbourne cup when he was trained by willie mullins he's coming off just the one run this preparation where he was midfield in a geelong cup so he'll be second up in this year's melbourne cup is there any money for this australian bloodstocked own horse here zach tunbridge
Speaker 9no there is not 61 hope at the moment does
Speaker 1he need a miracle dino
Speaker 11he does gene i think there'll be a lot of angry formalists out there if he is to get if he is to win the race this year i think a lot of people trying him in first second third start in the melbourne cup is he going as well it's a different preparation this time in he's a big watch in the yard we know he can sweat up but he's a no from me this year gonna
Speaker 10couldn't get near him guys second up like high pressure 3200 meters no thanks no i don't
Speaker 1think he stays two miles kev do you have an opinion there with vauban
Speaker 8um look it looks unlikely but uh i recall a case this year joseph has a horse called home by the lee who ran in the the stairs heard with cheltenham and he won it had was the fourth or fifth time of asking uh you know against all the odds at a at a big old price so things like this can happen but i i'd struggle to see it happening just time just on
Speaker 1that way it's at the front of my mind the great willie mullins told us there a few years back when he did a media conference with warband and absurd when he was training those horses he goes you know what gareth if it's higher than 25 degrees you can't back the irish forces because they don't like the heat thankfully it's not going to be anywhere near that yeah 23 and a half will be well that's close well it's okay it's
Speaker 10actually 26 tomorrow so we're really on that inflection
Speaker 8irishman out there tomorrow it's an interesting point isn't it because they aren't they aren't used to it no you know they're not used to the tie-ups you know there are environmental changes here you know they've you know horses bodies go through all sorts of changes when they when they move environment you know over the course of a week or so so um there's plenty going on and it's a good point and you'd be much happier for it to be cooler than warmer that's for sure kevin be good
Speaker 10to at the end of the show as well just get an idea of the horses you expect probably what they're going to do in their parade like their mannerisms as well be interesting might touch on that towards
Speaker 1the end yeah cool um envajar the six was pretty good in the caulfield cup um can he win a melbourne cup now is there any money fit him, Zach?
Speaker 9There has been a little bit. It's a $23 chance at the moment, but yeah, not my search.
Speaker 1Ray Dawson gets a lovely gated barrier. Can you see him winning a cup here, Kev?
Speaker 8Oh, he got a beauty of a spin around in a Caulfield Cup, didn't he? And he ran great. Don't know if it's been entirely straightforward for him in Werribee since. I would in my own mind, having looked at him closely, I would consider him more of a Caulfield Cup type than a cup type in terms of stamina. So that's kind of where I have him. I could see him getting a beautiful spin around, but when it really gets when the water gets deep, you know, he might just flounder a little bit.
Speaker 10McGannon? Well said. I think a soft enough Caulfield Cup at every possible. Not for me.
Speaker 11Dino? Yeah, Kukas goes on, so that maybe leans to Kevin's assessment there. Hasn't had the best time at post, obviously, the Caulfield Cup. He's a horse who's interesting. His two career peaks come this preparation, and they're both 2400 metres. So off that, you'd say, well, look, he might get further, but it's a big acid test, and it is a big, big effort to do that on race day in the Melbourne Cup.
Speaker 1Yeah. Seven rules, supremacy. Jamie Spencer not riding this time around. Benny Allen takes over from barrier 21. What's the market doing with him here, Zach?
Speaker 9Yeah, also friendless. $61. No, no one's backing that.
Speaker 1Yeah, I've got to get your thoughts on Anfichar as well, Kev. What do you make of his chances?
Speaker 8Oh, got him, yeah, you got him. Yeah, yeah, sorry.
Speaker 1So, Ben, what do you think of, like, what price would you take for him? Oh, God, it would have to be a big price. Yeah, yeah. Rules, supremacy, do you give him any hope?
Speaker 8Um, hard to see it on form, but could he play a role in the pace? Yeah, yeah. Um, you know, he's drawn out wide, like from what I see, a lot of the paces. Um, we saw what he did in the race last year. I don't necessarily think they'll want to do that again, but what do you do from wide? I think with him, you've got to go forward, don't you?
Speaker 1Yeah, I think so. I don't know if you'll get a strong two, two miles here. I'd be very surprised. He's a key speed
Speaker 10influence, as Kev suggested. That's about it.
Speaker 11Dino? Yep, he plays an important role in the race in regards to him rolling forward and setting up a speed in the contest. Can he win the race? No, but, um, interesting to see what they do from that gate and how the map sort of lands there.
Speaker 1Eight, Wine Dark Sea. He was one of the favourites for the Caulfield Cup, like he SP'd $8 at the end of the day. He's well supported, um, but he was beaten a long way here, Zach Tunbridge. Any money for Wine Dark Sea?
Speaker 9No, or there was previously, but, um, like you said, yeah, there's not much now. $41, but it was popular a couple weeks ago.
Speaker 1He has the Equicast first time and the concussion plates um, front first time. So that's interesting.
Speaker 8You, Kevin? Yeah, he's an interesting horse. I didn't quite know what to make of the Geoffrey Freer. Um, he was impressive, but it seemed a giant step forward and you just got, well, I got the feeling that um, a few of the bigger guns in that race maybe weren't quite at their best. Um, and to be honest, when you, when you look at his mechanics and his overall profile, I thought he'd be more of a Melbourne Cup horse than a Caulfield Cup horse. And he obviously pulled a horrendous draw and didn't get a very nice spin. The race just didn't suit him. Like he, he's a, he's a long, slow strider. And look, I think from a wide draw, he's, he's got to go forward. I think he'll stay. I think they have to make use of his action and not interfere with him. And, and really from that draw, I think that's, that's all they can do. But, but again, I don't know how straightforward it's been for him in Werribee as the, as like I say, the gear changes would hint at.
Speaker 1I've been, I've been hearing he hasn't been like at his best since the Caulfield Cup. So that has to be a concern because if you forget the Caulfield Cup run, he's a major player in this race.
Speaker 8Yeah. Yeah. He was, he was a big, big fancy for the Caulfield Cup prior to that draw coming out. He remained, you know, a strong fancy. Um, I could see a much improved effort. I wouldn't like to be, I wouldn't like to be laying a very big price about him for sure.
Speaker 10I've got him going three lengths better than the Caulfield Cup and that still has him around 53 to one. So, um, leave me out. Well, I love the fact that Damien Lane sticks and I love the fact that he gets to Flemington but still be shocked if he won.
Speaker 11Dean Watling? He's a big parade horse for me. I think like I mentioned, he'll, he'll stay all day compared to Sir Efford Yard. Obviously you got the query there, but like you mentioned those gear changes and quivers down your spine, Geoff, you're reading the form guide. So wait to see how he parades and so let's see what the late money
Speaker 1does. 29 minutes past nine. That's a look at the first eight runners in this year's Melbourne Cup. We'll take a break and then we'll continue on our preview of the great race next here on Giddy Up. Now, we got the weekend preview top four. I don't know how much it costs you at Bet365, but mate, I caught up with a few happy punters there at Flemington. We stuck it up at Bet365. We got you on Derby Day and we're coming to get you. We're on Cup Day. We've got our top four
Speaker 9ready to go. Absolutely. Yeah, that was pretty expensive, G. But whatever. I don't care. We got it up. We were due and we've done another one for tomorrow as well. Looks like we've gone two races at Randwick and two races at Flemington. I'm off the bench with Ben Caluzzi in the sick bay, but it's on there right now. It's $7.72. I can tell you it's probably half the price elsewhere. Cabuccio at Randwick in race one. I've gone Olay Go, Flemington race four. And then I think you've gone in the last at Flemington, G.
Speaker 1Yeah, Buckloo. Yep. So, and then Amirata for you there, Mickey Gannon.
Speaker 10Yeah, real soft effort from me.
Speaker 1I've got my bit of glory there,
Speaker 10605. I just looked for the last race of the day and took the favourite. It'll win by six.
Speaker 1That's good. That weekend preview, giddy up, top four Moldy. You need to be a count holder at Bet365. Log in and you get $7.72, which is a terrific price. Best value anywhere in the country. God bless it. As J.P. McManus would say. $7.72. I don't know if J.P.'s got an account with Bet365, but we should get him on. Get on some. Yeah. 33 minutes past nine. Number nine Asterix. He's trained by Chris Waller. Jai McNeil takes the ride. Much money for him here, Zach.
Speaker 9I'll tell you what, there actually has been just bets sort of all around it. It was hundreds yesterday at $61. Now they're backing it with our top finishes. So top six seven, eight. They're sort of having a cracker, but yeah, one of the better backed roughies.
Speaker 10Mick Gannon. Um, can run top 10, but that's about as good as you get for me, Gareth.
Speaker 1Yeah. What a world we're living in, in 2026. People declaring their best bets top 10 these days, Dino, which I love. Who's doing that? Oh, I did it before. Did you really? Yeah, yeah. Got beat. Rothweil. And I still got beat.
Speaker 10Rothweil. If you did top 12, you would have won. Top 10. There's only 30 left, Gareth.
Speaker 8Closer to home, we call that windy behavior. Yeah, yeah, it's nice. Yeah, yeah. It doesn't feel right.
Speaker 1Um, all right then.
Speaker 11All right, Dino, what are you thinking? Oh, well, maybe the money is purely in the fact of the position in run this horse is going to be. So gate six is going to land on the bunny. If there's not a whole lot of speed, you can see it scraping into top 10, but it's a no from me.
Speaker 1All right then.
Speaker 11Um, proper scraping.
Speaker 1Goody two shoes is number 10. Joseph O'Brien, JP McManus was second in this race last year, Wayne Lorden is back to take the ride. He gave it a peach last year from a wide gate and he was able to get into the placings with her. Um, what's the market being like with her? Goody two shoes, much money for her here, Zach?
Speaker 9Uh, there has been a little bit $29 yesterday, 26 now. Um, yeah, it's been okay. It's only a couple of percent hold.
Speaker 1She's the forgotten horse. I reckon a little bit here, Kevin Blake.
Speaker 8Oh, massively. So I think, you know, watch the race back again last night. Gee, she traveled. Yeah. Oh, she traveled. Like the, the, the dream was heavily alive. They're far along down. Um, Wayne gave her a beautiful ride from 2019 this year. Uh, Jesus, she comes back next year. Maybe she'll get 18. Um, but look, he's gonna, he's gonna do the same thing again. You know, there'll be no secrets about that. And just the, the team with her are very happy. Um, I think Francesca Kamani put up a video yesterday. I was, I was holding her while she was being washed and she's quite the interesting character. Like, like she's an angry lady. She she's, she's not one for kisses and cuddles. She'll pin her, she'll, she'll pin her ears and she'll take flesh if she gets it, but she's in great. Form and, um, the lads feel she, she was pushing through a few things last year. Um, not the case this year, you know, cause, uh, and again, I've, I've heard people talking about her form that there's important context with her in that she went to, um, Saudi Arabia in, in February to run, she got a touch of travel sickness. Couldn't run, came home long break first proper break she's got for a long time. And you have to view her form in that context. She was run to run improvement and what she did at Goodwood, I felt was the best run of her life, you know, she beats good, good Phillies show, showed a fantastic attitude and look last time. Again, it was with a view to here. I really wouldn't worry about it. The trip was too short for her. You know, the ground was, was the track was playing a bit funny on the day as, as we'll talk about, um, on James J, but she just is, it seems in really, really top order and she's overs for me.
Speaker 1That was a great victory in the little Elan tree there at Goodwood. On the she, she was hardy, she, she's a, she's a
Speaker 8little Tigress now, which is not a little at all. Actually, she's 490 kilos, but she, she's a Tigress.
Speaker 1Does she need hard ground?
Speaker 8She'd love it. You know, I remember this time last year where we, you know, we were delighted to see the rain for Al Riffa. We were, we were upset to see it for her. So, um, look, a good fast track is gonna, is gonna be good for her.
Speaker 1Will we learn anything at the call of the card with JP McManus today?
Speaker 8Like you definitely could. Yeah. Um, but again, I've said it before, like I've seen widespread assumption or JP's lining up for trust your instinct. I would not make any assumptions. He could back anything. You know, he, he, he has, he has, he has a, a, a very good form team. He'll be getting the best years. in the game he could back not even one of joseph's he could back something else yeah so do do not make assumptions that that man's uh he's surprising people all his life could he because he's such
Speaker 1a smart man obviously brewing with numbers could he do like could he could he throw us off and back a few other horses to try and get a better price tomorrow then
Speaker 8everything is possible everything is possible i'm gonna try and get him on yeah this is uh his his nickname is the sundance kid yeah you know this this is a different this is a different level of operator you know
Speaker 1there you go hey can she win she's a hole in the
Speaker 10market she's ridiculous over it's like how she's 26 and then a few horses we spoke about um what was the horse before we spoke chocolates and no the um number nine what was it um apologies good radio so what he's 51 and she's 26 she ran second last year the margin like the thing that we forget last year just going back i think the margin was 2.5 0.8 lengths the margin to third that horse was middle earth what price we're getting middle earth was another length and a half like if he gets it it's not gonna be wetter than what it was last year she's a ridiculous price and you watch the
Speaker 8race and you're almost if you're being tough on wayne you're like oh god wayne you got there a little bit early yeah
Speaker 10and she bumped into a horse half yours who was dead set like yeah was as good a bit as you'll see in a melbourne cup for a long time got the rain everything was perfect came into a call for your cup mad madness she's equal equal third pick for me yeah i
Speaker 1think she's a great horse great price as well what are you thinking here
Speaker 11dino yeah i agree and it's good to hear kevin suggest she's a big girl because obviously goes up three and a half kilos but we know that's relative to the horse itself so be the horse obviously easy to carry um i think the other big tick like he's all mentioned last year the big query and probably why a lot of us threw the form out and threw her out was because of the wet track so she gets bone dry track this year gets a better setup in that sense and gate 19 gano might be a big positive this year like you mentioned last year probably got there a little bit too early but from gate 19 it's a big positive this year can probably blend into it beautifully out wide and roll across i know i prefer that than probably drawing in and getting cut it up on the fence so i think it's all ticks for goody two-shoe and like you mentioned gonna the price is dead set ridiculous yeah she won't be 20 odd dollars
Speaker 10come tomorrow i'll go quick early here yeah it could be the fastest first 600 meters we've seen in quite some time okay yeah and
Speaker 8just on the weight i know it's again it's something because we're you know everything's unfamiliar for me but there's such an emphasis on like physical weight carried like this mare was carrying and i'm looking at the conversion here like like 75 kilos fences a year and a half ago yeah you know the physical carrying of the weight like these irish horses and internationals are going to think they're loose a lot of them you know history tells
Speaker 1you it's difficult to carry weight in the cup
Speaker 8yeah but again it's all relative and in terms of like the the physicality of it like they would they will think they're running loose a lot of these because they just don't carry light weights like this in
Speaker 1their races juji kabo what a campaign he has had he won a metro up there two starts back he missed out on a caulfield cup start which is remarkable in itself and then he wins a mooney valley cup but i could have went quicker than what he did in that mooney valley cup there that day oh i don't know exactly yeah well that's a good point what's the market doing here
Speaker 9zach uh yeah he's flying isn't he juja kibo fourth biggest hold of the book it's around that 11 mark um yeah really well supported all right dino
Speaker 11yeah it's probably a little bit the price is probably because we've seen these horses i know friends a lot to do with these runs prior to the race he's got the best run leading to the race so he's probably the flavor of the month and such but you deep dive the form and i know gunner used to share a similar sediment any time they've gone quick in races his form drops away he was pouring a cd cup when the pressure was on his last two runs have been outstanding but they're off extremely slow tempo so i've got a query at a strong 3200 meters and gonna if you're referencing the speed like you mentioned that first 600 meters he could be sucking in the big ones when it gets to the 400 meter mark there in flemington yep
Speaker 10spot on mate he's been really good to us for dropping off now
Speaker 1yeah good luck juja um hopewell rock number 12. he's been the talk the last week or so george bowie is a superstar he's training breeders cup winners now zach lloyd is his man in australia he gets his opportunity dino's mate like dino loves that he loves him they go out to get the night clubbing he claims him as his best mate zach really doesn't know who he is just yet but sometimes time there was talk that maybe he wouldn't get into the field but he's in the field he was too good for small fry good with two starts back and then he was second in an e-ball is he good enough to win kevin oh before i get your thoughts kevin i gotta go to zach they're backing this horse aren't they
Speaker 9zach absolutely uh very popular and um yeah they keep coming here keep coming yesterday was really popular with this horse it's coming out of 15 and it's
Speaker 810 bucks now kevin yeah look when i was with you two weeks ago you know i was putting them up because he was turkey trees and um the case was that he was a little bit too big for him at the time and it still is there but when they get to when they get that bit shorter you got to poke at them a little bit um huge regard for bowie you know it'd be a bit of a homecoming for him he used to work for gay waterhouse um zach lloyd we all really enjoyed him when he came up to the uk i think the women enjoyed him as well yes yes is he married oh boy i'm clearly joking yeah yeah and it's going to
Speaker 4give them a good rockering first time
Speaker 1would it be the first time
Speaker 8we've um jesus but i don't anyway look i i like i i you like his profile he's progressive but look if you want if you want to play devil's advocate you say look he he's you know i've heard a lot of mention of class you know when people are talking about these horses in this race he's never run in the stakes race he's run in eight handicaps in his life he's won one of them and uh when you watch that race um a goodwood two starts back if small fry had got a run he would have beat him yeah i've no doubt about that he was horrifically unlucky that day um he ran huge in the ebor um clear case that he was a little bit unlucky on the day um you know but the ebor since they knocked the prize money in that back down it's it's it's it's still a brilliant race and it's extremely hard to win but it's not quite the race it was and you know he's coming forward i think he'll improve for the trip i still like him but i'm just that you know if you didn't get the bigger prices could i look you in the eye and say he's over is it that
Speaker 1i'm not so sure do you think that he's with his writing as well what was seen in the uk he's been in a few big dances where he's needed to really try and win yeah oh yeah he's been wound up ready
Speaker 8to go yeah so every day has been a big day for him because they wanted to get here but you got to get up in the ratings and like i say he's one from eight in handicaps yeah and if you're if if you're a proper group horse which you need to be to win a cup if you're running handicaps um you know and there was a couple of big big dances in amongst them but there was races he really should have been winning if he's going to be a tip-topper and look again to give you the other side of the coin again i'm sure bowie will say look the step up and trip has been the key he's booming now you know it doesn't really it doesn't really matter that he was getting beaten handicaps last year but um so i'm trying to give you both sides of the coin that the conclusion is i like the horse but i think he's his price is is tight now mick gannon i'm going the other way
Speaker 10the other way with kev i think he's on the way up i think his profile is to relish three to two hundred meters and i think he'll come here and he'll be really really hard to beat the map's perfect just sits in behind them comes off that second wave i think the gap between him and uh point of law is too great i think they'll start a lot closer together they had them equal equal top top picks
Speaker 11dino yep like this horse a lot uh i like the price later in the week uh last week sorry but he's still backable for me i think he blends into the race race perfectly brings the good wood form where yes small fry should have beaten him but then you flip the coin he should have won an e-ball if the jockey didn't drop the whip there so maybe that's a blessing in disguise because he is to win that evil then what weight does he carry in this so i prefer to lose that and win a melbourne cup as such and i'm sure bowie and zack lloyd are the same so i really like the setup and kevin just a quick question for you on this earmuffs go on pre-race first time is he typical how's he typically parade that's probably one big one for the punters out
Speaker 8there again it's not something we declare it's not something we declare it's not something we declare um i assume it'll come off prior race um so we don't declare red hoods they're everywhere now i can't recall off the top of my head it'll be easy to check if he's worn one before but it's very typical you know a bunch of josephs are going to wear them as well you'll see them declared but um we don't declare them and uh look i think we've got something to learn from you guys i you want all the information you want all the data you can get and um it's really not good enough for people to to have to turn on their telly and look to see if they're wearing a red hood so a lot of
Speaker 10this is sort of like the horses that come from new zealand they exist but they if they say first time in our full rights exactly but they've used them 100 yeah yeah yeah we'll take a break this
Speaker 1is our melbourne cup preview here on giddyup on this tuesday
Speaker 2morning join the conversation text us on 049736736 live across australia this is giddyup with gareth hall
Speaker 1welcome back to giddyup weekend preview of the melbourne couple with the weekend preview team on cup eve great to have your company giddy up all thanks to bet365 we're up to number 13 one smooth operator what price one smooth operator for the copy is act
Speaker 9umbridge 71 of the best friendless hundreds into 71 but not much
Speaker 10there um mickey gannon yeah in the interest of time we'll just move on no dino the very the very best yeah it should be
Speaker 1100 months fast yeah yeah um 14 soul of spain was pretty good under the
Speaker 9field cup zach yep has that a bit of support too it is currently 31 was 41 yesterday it's getting a
Speaker 1little bit of love yeah mark hunter will join me tomorrow i think i don't want to give too much away but this might be one of his best roughies here mcgannon yeah
Speaker 10it can definitely run top 10 i think 30 20 meters sydney cup put up a really good figure maps really well so soft run can run top 10. yeah
Speaker 8I just couldn't believe how well he ran at Caulfield because, you know, we don't see things like that closer to home and I watched him make the move he did and I'm like, this horse is going to absolutely fill his trousers in the straight and he really wasn't beating far and, like, this is a, there was a lesson with this horse for us because when Joseph used to train him and he looked so slow, he looked incredibly slow, you know, very middle of the road horse. We thought these guys were, the go racing guys were mad bringing him down and it's an example and we've seen it again and again of what can happen when they come into an Aussie system, get some speed in their legs and they can just look like a different animal and so, you know, getting back up to two miles is surely going to be a help to him and I thought he ran huge at Caulfield.
Speaker 1Yeah, can he win, Dino?
Speaker 11Yeah, I think he can win. He's one of my best roughies of the race so anything past 2400 metres has been terrific and your reference, compared to last preparation, he was sort of put into his race as though he was looking to win. This preparation looked like it's all been targeted to Melbourne Cup and Forgetty went around last start, referenced his form prior and he's going really, really well and then you double down on that and the draw, the set-up, everything's looking tip-top for him so I think he's another one that's over the odds and you can back at the price.
Speaker 1And he's trained by the master, Chris Waller. Saran number 15, the blinkers go on this galloper trying to get something out of him. A little bit more, obviously, after being okay in a Caulfield Cup.
Speaker 926 bucks, 750 a place. Hasn't had a hell of a lot of love,
Speaker 1unfortunately, not. Mickey Gannon?
Speaker 10Yeah, it was good back towards the inside there, Caulfield Cup. Was it enough? Probably not. Dino?
Speaker 11Yeah, I think the hype's bigger than how good this horse is going. I just can't be in my favour. I think it's going alright. Blinkers seem like it's a last-ditch effort to get him to improve. The camp like him but I'm against him.
Speaker 8Kev? God, two miles would be a query, you know, and blinkers on, it's a real all-or-nothing type job, isn't it? But a talented,
Speaker 1talented horse. So you are, I was unlucky when he was beaten by Bonaface there at Randwick on the 22nd of August but since then, he's won a Tats Cup, he's won that Group 3 at Rose Hill defeating Amplify, he won a St. Leger and now he's won a Bendigo Cup and I think Trav Noonan has got him as the favourite for this year's Melbourne Cup. What price is he with bet 3.65?
Speaker 9Zach? Yeah, very, very popular, G. So $13 currently. Yesterday was as high as 20 or 21 punters were taking so $13 now and it's just under point of law in terms of the hold. Second best hold of the race.
Speaker 1Who would have thought?
Speaker 10Yeah, Mickey Gatton, so you are. He's done a good job since going to Bjorn Baker, this horse. Not for me, Gareth. I think the six-day backup is a big plus. Lands on speed, can definitely stick on. Top 10 chance, no doubt. I think the day at Bendigo it was definitely an advantage to be where it was in the run. Will he stay?
Speaker 1How far will he be? Well, that's the big question, Mark but he's just every challenge that's been put in front of him, he's been, he's been able to answer it. He'll put himself on speed, he's going to get a lovely run. Well under Stewie Ramsey, he's living his dream. On a breeder. Yeah, he's bred this horse. Well done. Dino, can he win so you are?
Speaker 11I think he can win but he can win without me at that price. I think you can't really put holes through his form in the sense of he's in terrific form, slow speeds, fast speeds. He tends to bounce off him regardless and he's got the best draw in the race so I don't want to be against him but I don't want to be with him at $12. I think that's extremely under his narrow.
Speaker 153 minutes past nine, we'll take a break. We'll continue on our preview of the Melbourne Cup next here on Giddy Up. Welcome back to Giddy Up, our Monday means test after 10 o'clock. This is our Melbourne Cup preview on Cup E with the weekend preview team. With Kevin Blake, the new addition to the weekend preview team. We might try and get him on every week. He can start doing Australian form. It could get expensive. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Very expensive. The best 365. 17 future history, one of the roughies, Greg Hickman. Great to see him have a runner here in the Cup. Jamie Mellon rides here,
Speaker 9Zach Tunbridge. No, no love, $61. No one's backing it.
Speaker 1All right then. Yeah, good luck to the team. I think it starts 100s plus. Dino? No, thanks. All right then. James J. Braddock. Will we have a couple of minutes to talk about him before I need to take a break? Is there any money for him, Zach?
Speaker 9There was a couple of weeks ago, G, but it's on the drift. It's out to $19. It was $12 the other day.
Speaker 1Barrier 24, not ideal, Kevin.
Speaker 8Yeah, look, I'd imagine that's why the drift is there. It's not the one you would have picked. You didn't get a chance to pick, unfortunately.
Speaker 1I felt like Luke Nolan there. I just didn't get a crack at it for you. I was just waiting for my chance. I was ready to go.
Speaker 8But look, to be honest, the more I look at it, the better I feel about it. I feel less bad about it. Yeah. You know, there's a lot of pace up high. And look, I think he has options from there. I almost feel like I have to defend him. I've heard lots of people poking at him, poking at his form. And look, again, it's about context. Like, the Derby run is the one people will talk about. That's not the run I'd focus on. That was an extreme test. That was about him overcoming his own, the problems he created for himself in the prelims. You know, very testing ground, very unusual track. Not really really relevant, I don't think, to a Melbourne Cup. It gave him his rating. But really, the run I'd focus on is last time. You know, he'd been gelded. He'd had some time off. He was facing into older horses for the first time in a very good field. The winners come out and won a Group 1 since. Purview, who you're going to learn a lot about up in this neck of the woods in the near future. Could be a cocksplayed horse. And the only goal we had for him that day, he was qualified for the Cup. We knew what weight he was getting. The only thing we wanted to see from him was, behave yourself in the prelims, drop in, make your way home without having a hard race and hit the line well.
Speaker 1And he did that too.
Speaker 8We were delighted. And further context for Leopardstown that day.
Speaker 1I'll talk about more of James J. Braddock straight after our break. This is our Melbourne Cup preview here on Giddy Up. This is our Melbourne Cup preview. The mainstay is not far away. Gareth Hall, Zach Tunbridge, Dean Watley, Mickey Gannon and Kevin Blake with me. James J. Braddock. So Leopardstown last start behind Arabian Crown. You were more than happy with the run. How much improvement will we see in him from that run?
Speaker 8I think he'll improve plenty. He just did exactly what we hoped he'd do. I walked every inch of the track that day. You know, the near rail was favoured. They didn't go as quick as people were expecting them to go. You know, the pace held up really well. He was off it. He was in the wrong part of the track. You know, he wasn't at the peak of his powers by any stretch of the imagination. So look, we loved the run. We bounced out of Leopardstown after that run. It was perfect. And in form terms, like it was only a couple of pounds off his derby run. You know, it was just picture perfect. Two moles? We don't know. I think he will. There's loads of stamina in his pedigree. You know, his mechanics will give him every chance to do it. Look, we're going to have a decision to make about how to ride him from that draw, clearly. But I think it's, you know, I've heard it said, oh, he has to go back. I don't know if he has to go back. I think we'll sit down in the war room tonight. Joseph's due to arrive in any time now. And the plans will be made for all of them.
Speaker 1I think you can have meetings and we'll go through the race and everyone will have their opinion. But at the end of the day, Craig. He'll just do whatever he wants. Craig will go off.
Speaker 8Hey, look, we're all aligned. We're all here to try and win the race,
Speaker 1you know. And he's done it before from a wide gate, Craig Williams. He's a big-time performer. So, James J. Braddock, Mickey Gannon. Will you tell me, Jay, he's your horse? Yeah, I reckon he's a big each-way chance. He'll need luck, but I love him. I love his setup.
Speaker 8And he's flying. He's in such good shape. He's really well.
Speaker 1And everyone think we'll be biased here, but what I'm hearing out of Werribee is that James is probably nearly the best horse that's been able to settle in there. He's walking around like a youngster.
Speaker 8He's. A bit like his owner. Yeah. Yeah. I had to apologize.
Speaker 1It wasn't my fault. Well, it is my fault because I was the one that had to choose the Barry even though I didn't get a chance to choose the Barry,
Speaker 8but. Hey, look, we could have had Russell Crowe picking the Barry or when you get picked last, it doesn't matter.
Speaker 10My profile's well, though, Jay. 53 and a half kilos, four-year-old. Just needs to overcome the wide draw.
Speaker 1He's the weighted horse in my eyes as well at 53 and a half, Dino.
Speaker 11Yeah, I share the underlying confidence there, Jay. He's a horse who's only had the lightly raised profile, so. So, off that, I think you do yourself a detriment if you knock his form overseas. Like the team I mentioned, he's out here to run a bold race and I'd much prefer a horse who's seven starts to run a crew peak in their final than a horse who's exposed form. So, good luck to you, Jay. Good luck to the whole team and I'm with you.
Speaker 1All right, then, Kisly, any money for this horse who stuck into the field there on Friday? No, not really. Or Saturday morning?
Speaker 9It was really well supported the other week, wasn't it? But no, $41, not much love.
Speaker 1Well, he just went too slow, didn't he, there on. It was a right up. In the mini valley cap.
Speaker 8Yeah, it just didn't go his way. Like, he was brought down here to run in the cup. You know, he has form over two and a half miles. But, you know, the guys in Werribee now, they feel the run has woken him up. Like, he's not a flashy worker, never has been, and he wasn't working flashy before. But I was there to see it yesterday and, you know, the guys were saying, like, that's the best he's looked since he's been here. Cheekpieces are going on. Wide draw. But, look, I think it's pretty simple with him. You roll forward. If he leads, he leads. Just keep on going. If he sits handy, he sits handy. But he's. I really wouldn't want to be laying a big price about him now. People will. dismiss him based on what they saw of him here but look that really the race really couldn't have gone much worse for him so look I'm expecting we would have loved to have been able to send him here fresh if we'd rolled the dice we would have done that but it would have been a fair whole sweat but look at his I think the run has actually benefited him it's woken him up you know the cheek pieces I think are are a big help and Bo Martin's there we're delighted to get him
Speaker 10alright then $41 ridiculous should be a lot shorter than that I love the 10 day backup I love the fact that he's drawn wide gives him plenty of time to roll across 53 and a half kilos runs top 10
Speaker 1let's have a look at Dino I've got your opinion on Kislyar yeah started $3.80
Speaker 11last start low end of the trip absolute crawl many horses like Juju Kibo and Mr Monaco were shorter in the market now so I think superior setup and you're getting $41 compared to an inferior setup last start when it's $3.80 ridiculous price has to start shorter
Speaker 1we're under the bat here with our cut preview but we're up to the favourite the 20 point of law here's Zach Tumbridge how much money for this horse?
Speaker 9piles biggest hold in the book so far but it's pretty short $6.50 now you
Speaker 1taking him on here
Speaker 8Kev? oh look I put egg on my face prior to Geelong questioning his form and I would stand over that he was very good there you know didn't do things super efficiently but managed to win but look you know putting on my hard hat watching them over the line and then the gallop out like small fry beats him in another 100 metres doesn't he? yeah you know he's got more than a couple of extra furlongs to go here he's unproven over it you'd love the draw for him you know the race is going to set up you'd imagine they're going to be happy to put him in a bit of cover and try to get him to race efficiently he's got the prelims to come through bit of a question mark he's got a bit of character about him but ultimately small fry on another day I think would have nipped him and small fry is not good enough to get in this field unfortunately you know so do I have a huge amount of respect for him yes would I have him in my top five or six yes would I have him as fav I'd be I'd be poking a little bit
Speaker 10I think he improves from Geelong I think the barrier draw is fantastic what's his fifth six in run high pressure 3200 metres I think he'd be right I really like what I saw at Geelong okay
Speaker 11Dino yeah it's a sitting duck somewhat at Geelong fast tempo love his effort there love the set up here I think the parade is maybe the biggest thing for this horse just want to see him parade well and not get too up and about and strictly business as one of the outsiders
Speaker 1Zach yep no love all right then Mickey Gannon yeah next good luck to them Dino next yeah I wish everyone the best of luck they're living the dream one under Thomas Carberry
Speaker 8yeah the Irish horse I call him yeah yeah Martin Farley yes from Valencia Island in Kerry you will not meet many people from Valencia Island they're living the dream I've met him a few times over here great people best of luck to them
Speaker 1Mr Monaco the 22 here
Speaker 9Zach yep been running pretty well and has had a bit of support $26 one of the better back roughies Dino
Speaker 11yeah can run really well I think it's not a bad roughy can win the race no but top 10 probably yeah one of the better
Speaker 10locals for me G but top 10
Speaker 1Sakuma the 23 Graham Beg and William Pike the pride of WA owned by of course the Delroy family and buried and this horse has been set for this cup because he got that golden ticket there in the Ramsden back in May Zach Tunbridge any money for him
Speaker 9yeah 34 into 26 overnight just a little bit of love yep Mick Gannon set to peak here I don't think a peak's good enough
Speaker 1no Dino yeah
Speaker 10not for me
Speaker 1yep and then 24 chocolates um Harry Coffey he reckons he'll be ready to go despite breaking his collarbone there on Saturday this would be some story Zach much money for her
Speaker 9tough as nails isn't he uh yes correct $10 and is the 5th biggest hole in the book there's um yeah it's actually been backed pretty well Dino
Speaker 11yeah two crew peaks both come 2,500 meters but you reference that recent form it just doesn't scream back me at $10 so like the setup 3,200 meters Ganno but I'm just $10 surely too short
Speaker 10yeah I had it going to a new level and still couldn't get it to $10 so good luck to him
Speaker 8yeah I can see the case I would fear her a little bit but the juice has probably gone out of the prices
Speaker 1yeah all right then your top four selections in our great race the Lexus Melbourne Cup we'll start off with you Dean Wattlow Dean Wattlow
Speaker 11all right Jay top four in for first and keen Hope Will Rock in for second Point of Law in for third hoping Trust Your Instinct does a rekindling and a twilight payment setup and in for fourth James J. Braddock the best roughy I thought was Kisler in the race
Speaker 10Mick Gannon 12 Hope Will Rock on top the 20 Point of Law they've actually got to mark the same price the price sensitivity between the two so 12, 20, the 10 Goody Two Shoes clearly the value play in the race and the two Trust Your Instinct in for fourth so you're with an international Melbourne Cup this year
Speaker 1Kevin Blake Sons and Lovers
Speaker 8Hope Will Rock Goody Two Shoes
Speaker 1Chocolates okay no James J.
Speaker 8Braddock if he wins the fact that I didn't have him in the top four is not going to bother me I'm definitely good
Speaker 1it's going to be a great race there's so many questions that we won't know the answers to until after three o'clock on Tuesday afternoon but there's so much intrigue so bring it on the call of the car will be fascinating a little later on
Speaker 8box office do not miss it
Speaker 1go and get him Kev thanks for your time hey you've been great with the promotion of this cup I've enjoyed the articles that you've written and the way that you've made yourself accessible to everybody here in Australia it's a credit to you and we wish you the best of luck you go and get that Melbourne Cup mate you go and take that
Speaker 8cup home it's been such a pleasure Garrett this is living the dream for me there's a lot of people spend a lot of money and break a lot of laws to feel what we're feeling right now so we can't wait to get there tomorrow
Speaker 1keep on punching brother thanks for that good on you Mickey Gannon good on you Dino thanks boys and Zachy Tarnbridge what's your tip before we let you go
Speaker 9I've gone with Juju Kebo on top so Juju Kebo I hope we'll rock Mr Monaco and I'll catch you at the end of the week Jay you'll be back down there
Speaker 1good luck Zach thanks for that mate good luck with Juju as well time for a break the Monday means test ready to go next
Speaker 2great to have your company
Speaker 1Melbourne Cup Eve Johnny O'Neill he'll be trying to win his second Melbourne Cup
Speaker 12that is correct my friend how are you brother I'm really good great to see you time of the year incredible racing on Saturday wasn't it and again we take our hats off to the wonderful track manager there to be able to manage that process knowing that there were going to be a heap of storms come through I know a little bit of it missed but there was some heavy racing heavy rain but I thought the racing was was incredible incredible
Speaker 1hello to you Wayne Hawks morning Gareth Hall how are you I am very well what's going on it's a busy show today you've got a jacket and tie on what do you think
Speaker 13Eddie Maguire do you John Lawson John Lawson calls do you mate calls the card is that where you're going yeah is that where all the cool people go hey mate can I just I just want to interrupt you
Speaker 12what about the great G Hall right so Aussie Greg Hall or Gareth no no no Gareth Gareth elevated above Greg these days come on Johnny though the great G was a good man no one wants to hear about me no one wants to hear about me no here's the thing I want to talk about this is our show not yours Gareth so the great Aussie Kerr who is a very generous man has obviously put given Gareth an opportunity to get into a Melbourne Cup runner so it's a very I'll pay my way I'm not saying you didn't pay your way I think it's a very very good gesture from Auss to do that I'm so honoured he's a good man to do that so what about this so Aussie as he does and he's done it over the journey oh okay well look you draw the barrier today okay you draw the barrier today well I don't know if you saw it but this is the best go ever the last horse to be drawn the last horse to be drawn in the Melbourne Cup Gareth has to go up and pick up the number and you know how many barriers were left just one just one barrier 24 so he only had one well he only had the one chance so he went up he picked it up and held it up to the crowd did you keep the little cup Aussie would have let you keep the cup
Speaker 1well I didn't really want to keep the cup it was bad luck but anyway what do you mean bad luck I give it to Matty Becker but it was one of the most it was tough to watch really I do feel like Luke Nolan and she's alibi so they've got you to go up
Speaker 123200 mate I could have had a crack at it
Speaker 13and there's one barrier remaining and it's barrier what 24 that's an absolute I know wouldn't it oh no you're the oh no Gareth Hall
Speaker 4gee come on mate
Speaker 13good morning how did you feel I felt shit house
Speaker 1yeah I guarantee you did I gotta tell you that remember the tie you've got on today sponsored by Gazman today is that what it is your friends Gazman what is going on with that no but you know what I've loved the build up obviously it's a privilege to ever be part of a horse in the Melbourne Cup but yeah it was I sat there
Speaker 12most people in their life will never get that G
Speaker 1what do you mean most nearly everyone I'm thinking please please I was so nervous I was so nervous and I had to wait to the end until the end and then 24 didn't come out I thought you can't
Speaker 13the only thing is
Speaker 1as Craig Hutchison just pointed out that could only really happen to you Gareth
Speaker 13but the only thing is it wasn't your doing like no no no it wasn't no no no it wasn't you were the last one out you had no choice I mean definitely if there was 20 horses to go and you've just popped out 24 but I remember I did it once I did it for Arena in the Caulfield Cup and Jack Ingham said son you're sitting there that cured me. Michael's mate David Russell, our old in for Brutal and the Doncaster, he drew the outside barrier. Luckily, gee, Boss gave it a 20 out of 10 and got outside the leader. But barrier 24, gee, what odds is he now, Gareth? He's only 15 or 16. He's out the gate.
Speaker 1But you know what?
Speaker 12He's a nice horse.
Speaker 1What? You can still win. You can still win the cup from gate 24. Hey, now, can we just ask you something?
Speaker 12Because you've moved into the Leviathan owner category now. Like, you've got a Melbourne Cup runner, which a lot of people listening out there would be so excited to have an opportunity to do that. I want to jump in.
Speaker 13There'd be no other person living in Parkdale 3195 that would have a runner on the Melbourne Cup. No, there is. It's got a dog. There's another one. Yeah, there's a couple.
Speaker 12No one that's got a dog called Bobby. No, that wouldn't be right. Please continue. Now, tell us about the new international horse we've got that Ozzie and Matt Becker have sourced from Dermot Weld. Yeah, pair of you. Very, very, very good horse.
Speaker 13Yeah. Are you in that? Are you in that? Yeah. You're in that too?
Speaker 1Yeah, formerly trained by Dermot Weld. You know what's happened, don't you? Nope. Please tell me. I'm out. He's in.
Speaker 12Oh, you're out. What's happened? Oh, no, I'm out. I'm excluded. Wow. I'm barred. Anyway, so much has happened in racing in the last week. Barry O'Brien and the like. Barry's in, mate. The best crew. Oh, unbelievable. Karts is in. Mike Angy's in. Cookie's in. Perfect. What'd you pay for it? How much was it? I don't know. How much was it, Gareth?
Speaker 13People will be saying, don't take over each other. I don't know. I haven't seen the bill.
Speaker 12Hey, what about Kate and Andy, right? Do you know Andy? Gaff? Andy Gaff. Andy Scafidis. Yes, yes, yes. And Kate Solomon. Very good friends of mine. We've raced lots of horses together. Lots and lots. What a great group. What about those two? Yeah. They've got to share in the next episode.
Speaker 1Oh, wow. And we're going to get stuck into that. Unbelievable. Congratulations, guys. It is a lot of fun. Terrific. It's hard to sleep at night, but we're going to get stuck into the show with the Kings We know why it's hard to sleep at night at your joint. It's got nothing to do with Bobby. Yeah, yeah. The Kings' Gambit. Now, what a day of racing it had. Can't get out from underneath that doona. Shush, Johnny. Yeah, unbelievable. What a day of racing. We had Derby Day. There's nothing better. You walk through those gates on Derby Day. 88,000. Everyone dressed in black and white. They were. The weather was on and off, but in the end, it was a pretty good day. There were stars everywhere you looked. The next episode, defending St. Gothard. What a great cool mall that was. They're two high-quality colts. Stormy Marco. Don't worry about the 2,500 metres and that quick back up. Waller and McDonald again. And Lady Shenandoah dominated the Empire Rose. Then we had the drama in Sydney. Matt Randwick, she's alibi, still trying to get out. Luke Nolan had no luck whatsoever in that race. Pericles wins the Russell boarding. So, it was a terrific day. And then the Melbourne Cup barrier draw. And now we get set for our greatest race, the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday. Johnny, it's the best time of the year.
Speaker 12Just, I'm over the moon, mate. I'm just so excited. I know everybody is. And as you said, the numbers on Derby Day were fantastic. There was a bit of shitty weather forecast. And a little bit came through. But I think Flemington put on. A wonderful, a wonderful first day again. And as you said, there was some incredible results, certainly in Melbourne. But again, we see Hawksy, Waller, Jaymac, Kieran, Zahra. These guys just come to the fore, don't they, when, when carnival time comes. And, you know, to see, to see Jaymac ride four winners again, he had a quiet sort of last Saturday. And people were sort of saying, you know, will he dominate like he normally does, but it was just an extraordinary riding exhibition from him. And for Chris Waller to train four winners, obviously Kieran to train the next episode with just an extraordinary ride from, um, from Mark Zahra. And what a call. For those who haven't heard that race call, it was unbelievable. So, Matty, you did a, you did a huge job.
Speaker 13It had it all, mate. Yeah, it did. And like, to be fair, the Coolmore, talking about that race, they were the best two two-year-olds to come out of last season. They, we, you know, everyone saw that. Everyone knew they were the best two two-year-olds. And one cost 2.7. The other one was, uh, St. Gothard was here, a couple of million as well. So, it gives people good confidence and not everyone can afford to go and race those expensive horses.
Speaker 1And this is how the next episode, Wayne, did it in the Coolmore, defeating St. Gothard. It was a terrific duel by these two great colts.
Speaker 4And rule of the next episode, under focus and in boobay. Paradoxium approaching the 300 metres with natural fling, having a crack at it. St. Goddard brought towards the middle. They were followed by the next episode. Down the outside, about to unleash as they reached the 200. The next episode took the front from St. Goddard in boobay. Lake the outside. So, it's the next episode at the 50. St. Goddard trying to have a crack at the next episode. Digs in and wins. Goddard. So, the next
Speaker 1episode, Wayne, $2.7 million he was purchased for as a yearling at Magic Millions. And who knows what he's worth now? Well, he's worth plenty.
Speaker 1230 plus? I'd be every bit of that. Yeah. Every bit of that. They're talking 50.
Speaker 1350? 50. Go and get it. Go and get it. It's all right to talk it, but you've got to get it. There's only, in theory, one person that can pay that, and that's John Magna. So, if he wants to pay 50, he will. And if he doesn't, he won't.
Speaker 1But isn't he owned by Whitton as well? Yeah, Anthony's in it. Well, they're not going to be selling then.
Speaker 13No. No, you wouldn't have thought. They're not going to be selling. But then, you know what? I mean, Alabama Express was owned by John Massara, and they got top dollar for him, and he sold out of Alabama.
Speaker 1It's a bit different. He's the son of Snitzel, this horse. I get what he is.
Speaker 12I understand. Hey, can I just go back to Matt Hill's call? Jeez, it was a call. It was a great call. He's a great caller, isn't he? Yeah. Well, he's one of the greats. Look, he is one of the greats, but I just have to say, he's like, the way that he paints the picture, and the way that he did that, you know, was just amazing. The bloody hairs were standing on the back of my neck then.
Speaker 13He's a jet, that boy. The elite jockeys just keep doing it, but they're on the best horses. Make no mistake about that. But the pressure. Mark Zara's sitting back there, and it's the old-fashioned line. in the racing industry at Flemington, just wait till the clock tower, son. Don't be going before the clock tower. So to be sitting back and thinking you've got a short, not a short, sharp sprint, but he's got a great sprint and you just need to hold him up, hold him up, hold him up. And to do what he did was, you know, was wizardry like the pike last week. You know, doing what he did in the Cox Plate. And I mean, it's easy after the event to stand back and go, wow, what a ride. But you know what? It's easy to get, obviously get an itchy ass and just want to take off and try and beat the horse home. So you've got to know what's underneath you, but that credit to these guys at this top level, because the blowtorch is on you from everybody. And then you put your own pressure on yourself. But I've said it every time after a group one, it's the same trainers, the same jockeys that probably win 80, 90% of the group ones year on year on year are the same people. And they just keep performing at the top level, these guys.
Speaker 10-4-double-9-7-3-6-7-3-6 to join the conversation on the Garrett's Horse and Hound text line. It's a funny old game racing because, many say, including the jock of St. Gothard and of course, Jay Mackey would expect him to say this. He reckons, Johnny, if you swap the barriers there, you swap the results.
Speaker 12Look, I know that Chris was pretty upbeat about the horse. I know James was too. They really agree with that statement. Well, look, I mean, that's, it's straight racing, isn't it? Like we can sit back and say, you know, if you change the barriers in Jimmy Starr's race and we didn't draw an 18 with the sectionals we ran, we probably would have won too. So, but that happens in a lot of races, doesn't it?
Speaker 13It just happens in all the races.
Speaker 12You can't do much about it.
Speaker 13And you know what? You swap Kaying, Rising and Tempted, and Kaying is still undefeated in his last 300 race starts, Tempted doesn't, Tempted doesn't win if you swap the barrier draws. So that happened, that happens all the time. Yeah, that happens all the time. But the best thing about that race was that I thought was, you know what, good on the people that really put proper, proper money in. It's good for every owner that puts money in, but when you're putting the multi-million dollars into buying a single horse, it doesn't matter how rich you are, you still, it's still great for the industry. When the top price yearlings actually come through and do a job. And the next episode, I said it after the Dane Hill, every, every start, Barry's first start, he'd run on, run on wet tracks and it was beautiful on Saturday. After the last, I actually walked from the 400 back around to the 800 and walked to the stables. And the track was, track was not that, not that much mark for having Cox Plate Day and Day, Derby Day run. Where, where, where is the rail going out? Three metres. So that was where, I knew where the wear and tear was. And the grass. The grass was, it's long, it's lush. And this was at, you know, 6.30 on, on Saturday night.
Speaker 12Just going back to the horses you're talking about there. And it's great that a couple of the more expensive horses delivered. I think over the journey, we've spoken about this, going to the yearling sales, because traditionally the results for the horses that have bought the really big money are not where we need them to be. Correct. You know, normally that sweet spot is sort of two to four. I was going to say 150 to 500, but you're right. So in that sweet spot is where you're generally buying the really nice horses. So I think it's great, um, because, you know, there's opportunities now. These, the guys, the studs want to go in them so you can get in shares. Like, you know, Kate and Andy, for example, you know, went in, obviously put a bit of money in, but they took a share and, and they get a chance to race with the studs and set themselves up. I think it's great. Didn't even Kieran's got 10%, I think. Yeah, I think he has. And you know what? He's a 10 or 20. Here's a story for you, right? So when they bought the horse, I love the horse. He was a beautiful horse, I thought. So, and Gabs was there in those days. So she just put me down for, I'm just in for 5%. It's still on my prism. And when I was sitting down by, and so Kate and Andy went in, we would race. So they went in, I went in. I was in the, it's in my prism. So I'm in the horse that I'm sitting down with all the horses that I'd bought with Kieran that year and all the yearlings and going through. And cause I didn't commit to it at the sales. I said, geez, it's expensive. I'll wait and see. And, um, I bought a few others. So I thought, ah, look, I won't, I won't get, it's one of those expensive ones. I bought the expensive one the year before. Um, and it did. didn't go any good, so I thought, ah, I won't go in it.
Speaker 1That's my own no. Boom. That's my own no too. You idiot, Johnny.
Speaker 12Well, I'm an idiot. It's easy after the event. But having said that, like, you know, cheering hard for Kieran and all the guys and the owners have put their money up, they deserve a result, you know?
Speaker 13Yeah. All right then. The other great thing about that was they were the best two two-year-olds of last season and the Sydney form has continued to stack up because Warwoven won the Golden Rose, who came down and won the Caulfield Guineas. Second was St. Goddard. He's come down and he's just gone down by the barest of margins. So the Sydney versus Melbourne three-year-olds, normally it's quite dominant one way or the other, whereas the whole form's stacking up. And I think that's great for the autumn. I tell you, Lloyd's horse ran well. The third horse. Yeah, he was. A couple of good horses there. Ken Keyes has got that. It's a good horse. Alibaba. It's a good horse for Ken Keyes. It went good.
Speaker 1And we're on to Phil Cunningham as well. I think this was one of his first horses he's purchased.
Speaker 12I think it's the first time he's said he'd been to Flemington.
Speaker 1Yeah. A racer. He's a big-time player in world racing. He looks like a good bloke too. Yeah. He sounds like it. I've never met him, but he looks like a good bloke. Oh, mate, he'll want to know. He sounds like a good bloke. You're in group one horses internationally now. All right. You're that big.
Speaker 13You're wearing jackets and ties to work.
Speaker 1You are. And so then I think the derby is the derby, 2,500 metres. You just have to have a look at the champion stakes, all right, coming up on Saturday. And you've got no three-year-olds, and it's basically the same race as the Cox play. You can't have a 2,000-metre derby because then you lose those three-year-olds from the Cox play. And I saw Henry Field has changed his mind regarding what he thinks the derby should be run at. It'll be a complete nightmare if you lose the three-year-olds from the Cox play because you move the derby distance back, Wayne. It won't. It would be a nightmare.
Speaker 13Yeah, but the problem with the derby is the derby's history is not strong enough, and it's under consideration.
Speaker 1What do you mean it's not strong enough? It's the oldest race.
Speaker 13No, no. It can be the oldest race all at once, but it's under serious blowtorch from the quality of the race holding it. Hang on. It's true. Holding it group one. It's status. That's what the problem is. The Asian Racing Conference have put it on notice and said that we need to get better quality horses winning this race, and that's not the club's fault. So the club have to work out, do we make it 2,000 and the Oaks? Do we make it 2,000 and make it a better race because you'll get Cox play horses? But does the Cox play need the three-year-olds to bolster that race up? I'm going to argue and say, no, they don't. And my father's won a Cox play with a three-year-old.
Speaker 1So. And you had all too hard in a few hours. And he just got beaten and Viscount just got beat. You don't have to run. A lot of people asked me last week and they thought I wasn't strong enough on you regarding the three-year-olds because you have. That's an opinion. But you've run a lot of three-year-olds in a Cox play. So you're contradicting yourself last week.
Speaker 13No, no, no, no, no, no, no. You can have the choice of, you don't, just because the Derby, let's say it is, just because the Derby's run at 2,000 metres does not mean that you will run the horse in the Derby. You can still go and run the Cox play if you want. I mean, that was Peter Moody. And his connection is going, no, no, we're going to the Golden Eagle. We're not running in the Cox play. You have a choice. Yeah. But if you run the Derby at 2,000 metres, it's not just about those Cox play horses. We don't breed staying horses anymore. No one does. So it's all right for the big stars, mate. Everyone's cheering about the Coolmore. It's a 1,200 metre sprint race in the Sunnysnitzel. Since the Bill died in New Zealand, we haven't had a dominant staying stallion. So that's what the problem is. But the fix for next year is, if you really want to do something, mate, the Oaks 2,000, see how that works. If you want to sit on the Derby for another year.
Speaker 1Johnny, you got an opinion on this?
Speaker 12Oh, look, I mean, we discussed it last week. It was good story, Marco. Yeah, look, he's a nice horse. I don't think, and look, this again is the challenge. I don't think it's a classic year for staying horses, you know. But having said that, it was a really good win. It's a really nice horse. It can progress. You know, a filly's run third. You know, the horse that ran fourth ran well. True Rebel didn't stay. Signetti's thereabouts. You're going to go through this field and probably find that more than half of them. Look, if you own the horses and you had a chance to run in the Derby and win the group one, it's unbelievable. But, you know, like we had a horse called Warning that won the Derby a number of years ago. And I think he might have won a, he might have won a Queen Elizabeth a couple of years later. But we ran him in the cup and he just wasn't good enough.
Speaker 13But most three, most three-year-olds. Most three-year-olds in the country don't go on at four. Because you're getting, you're in the under-17s, under-19s, set weights against your own age. And then all of a sudden you go into the big, big deep end with the big boys. And you know what? It's not just the big boys. Because the girls are dominating in the weight for age stuff. Shane Anderson put out on Twitter.
Speaker 1Yes, I just read that. He's obviously. What did he say? He's an innovator, Shane Anderson. He says the VRC did an amazing job turning the Melbourne Cup into a staying championship of the world or a marketing pitch that was. Along those lines, it's enhanced the great race. I think they can do the same with the Victoria Derby. Make it a true three-year-old staying contest of the world. Rather than reduce the distance of the Derby, open it to both Northern and Southern Hemisphere bred with the Northern Hemisphere bred carrying more weight due to the age difference. Australia's are buying Northern Hemisphere bred stays in vast numbers every year. The trend is entrenched. Those Southern Hemisphere bred types suitable still get their chance, but it keeps an incredibly important. As it should be, I'd love to see this happen.
Speaker 12But the way that they grow, but they'd be late two-year-olds. No, no, no, no, no. They're saying that when they're older, they're older.
Speaker 13They're older. So what happens is they'll get 58 and out. The Europeans are six months older. So they might be four in theory.
Speaker 12Right? Yeah. Okay.
Speaker 13So, so, so they get, they, they get 58 hours. Aussie horses get 55. That's what he's trying to say. The only problem is they wouldn't pass the CT scans. Well, yeah, but they might because they're young and they haven't had many starts. Yeah, yeah. The thing. The thing about this is tradition is great and we need tradition, but there's one guarantee I'll give you. One guarantee for tomorrow I'll give you. Almost no one is going to talk about Bart Cummings. And that's tradition, folks.
Speaker 131 minutes past 10. We'll take a break. We'll come back and we'll preview the race that Bart Cummings dominated for so many years. How many cups did he win, Wayne? Between us, we won 12. Yes. Time for a break. We'll come back and we'll preview the cup with Wayne Hawks and Johnny O'Neill.
Speaker 5Comes a couple of horses off the fence from Apocalypti. Oh, she's in alibis in an awful position here at the 250. It's Skyhook and decorum going up to Johnny O'Neill. Line bivouacked for the lead. Clear from Mr. Miller. Decorum and Skyhook. Nothing in it. Skyhook and decorum. They hit the line.
Speaker 1I think Skyhook knows to decorum. So the beaten favourite is she's alibi. She was $1.50 in the Golden Eagle and she didn't have any luck whatsoever. Skyhook defeating decorum. What do you make of she's alibi, Hawksy? And the news this morning is that she is definitely off to the paddock. She's off to the paddock?
Speaker 13Yep. Drew the barrier that she drew. Straight after the race, everyone's gone. Slaughter, slaughter, slaughter, slaughter. Yeah. What did you think? Well, my comment to the people that asked me was I'd need to go back and watch it again. So I went back and watched it again. He jumped out of the barrier. He's gone forward. That's where he logged. Yeah. He's not chitty, chitty, bang, bang. He can't jump them. No. If he makes one mistake, he should have stayed where he was to see whether the gap comes. There wasn't really a gap. If you watch the stewards head on, he might have forced his way through, but he was just a victim of racing. I mean. You know, a slaughter is when you have options and you don't do it. If you jump from the barrier and you're in that spot and you've got nowhere to go, you can't be anywhere. The jockeys always get cast as that was a slaughter, but if you're tied to where you're tied to and, you know, he didn't really have many options other than at the end, whereas he probably just should have stayed relaxed. I was talking about just before the break, Mark Zara's Willie Pike stayed relaxed and just tried to ride for luck. If that luck doesn't come, everyone goes, oh my God. Wow. It just, you had no luck, buddy. And that's the difference. That's the difference. And they rode against him as well. They knew he was there, which is understandable as the dollar 50 favorite. Yeah, but that happens. I mean, Lady Shenandoah won by four, but I mean, Lady Shenandoah was three wide. It got covered admittedly, but they were not keeping J-Mac in. Sorry. They were not letting him in. They were keeping him out. He wanted to. Yeah. Yeah. So when you're the dollar 50 pop, when you're J-Mac, you got to accept that, you know what? You're not, everyone's not out there being your best mate and we're out there riding
Speaker 1against you. It was a weird type of carnival. The FSH's alibi, like all of a sudden she went to Sydney to take on Autumn Glow and the Winx. And then she bolts home a Maccabi Diva and then they need another run. So they go to 2000 and she faces Land Legend and he delivers a performance that no one saw coming really, track record time. And then it's a three week backup off that Might and Power Stakes victory into a Golden Eagle over 1500 capacity field. And she has not much luck at all.
Speaker 12Yeah. All I know, and everybody saw it, backed as if absolutely unbeatable. I've never seen so much money come for a horse. I think it got out to $1.90 with a few concerns around exactly what you just said, coming back from the 2000 track record time to a 1500 metre race. One thing I will say is imagine if all of the, and there was a lot of great jocks riding in Sydney on Saturday, but a lot of the carnival jocks were down here in Melbourne as well. So if those guys in Sydney served it up. to him, imagine what would have happened if, if the other guys had have been there. So there was. It was definitely jockeys played. There was no doubt about that. But when a horse like that is backed as if completely unbeatable, I mean, I don't know why he just didn't. What do you think of the ride? I think as Hawks, he said he couldn't jump them. But the problem was he got in a tricky spot. Do you get in a tricky spot with a horse that's apparently got six or eight leaps on them
Speaker 13at $1.50? But he grew barrier five and he had horses around him. So he really couldn't arch and barge anywhere. I suppose you just got to drop your hand.
Speaker 12Look at the end. I don't know. All I know is that if you're on at $1.50, everyone would be sick. I'm sure Moods didn't look too happy and his lovely wife didn't look too happy either. But that happens. What was that good sprinter he had, Peter? They couldn't work out whether it was a sprint or a mile.
Speaker 13The horse ran in the Everest that was- Good horse. I wish I went.
Speaker 12Yeah, I wish I went. It was a bit of a feeling like that, isn't there? Yeah. But it won. Yeah, but what I'm saying is it lost more than it won, though. It started odds on a lot of those races. So the challenge is that- It's a back market. Yeah. Yeah, I get it. I get it. I just sort of, just looking at that horse again, and I know I had this conversation a while ago, and geez, who's there to challenge Peter Moody? I'm not. But they train by the eye. They train by the historical success they've had. I don't think he's a big data user. I'm not quite sure whether the data said the horse could win or not. I don't even know if he takes any notice of it. But fundamentally, the people that are using all of those stats and- Well, someone did. And datas and stuff, I'm going to sit back and highlight. There's no fluke why Waller and Barr are training all the winners, I wouldn't have thought. If you go back and have a look at the amount of work they do and numbers and stats and processes and data- As I said two weeks ago,
Speaker 13stop looking at the top ones, right? You could stuff Octagon and stuff Lonro and they'll still win. The difference is between those top horses, if you stuff them, you won't win as many at the top end. You still will win. Get the bottom horses and get them up. That's the key. Now, does the data help with that? That's the question I want to know. Don't look at she's an alibi and all these great horses. No, no, no.
Speaker 12But I think it does, Hawksy, because I think what happens- Well, I'm asking. I don't- He's- Just use the data. Never have. Here's what I would say to that. We all go to the sales to try to
Speaker 13buy nice horses, right? And how come some people can buy winner after winner after winner and there's plenty of big trainers- Yep, yep.
Speaker 12I'm thinking of them right
Speaker 13now that aren't good enough at producing group one winners from the yearling sales, because I can put my hand up and say, well, I'm lucky that we
Speaker 12can. Yeah. But all I'm going to say on this is, people go to the yearling sales and buy horses. We all go with a dream of trying to buy a group one horse or a group one stayer or generally, Hawksy, you would say a sprinter miler is what we generally try to buy at the yearling sales. That's it. Well, there's no starting horses. Fast two-year-olds, fast two-year-olds, guineas horses. Correct. And if we're lucky, cocksplate horses. If we're lucky. If we're lucky, right? Yep. So the challenge there is that they don't all work out. As a matter of fact, probably 5% of them work out. Less. Okay. So on the back end of that, whether you pay $10,000 like they did for She's an Alibi or $3.5 million for a colt, if you don't have every piece of information to measure- No. I know- No. No. And you know what? Yeah, but hang on a minute. And again, I'm just going to argue this because this is important. That's okay. You can. What happens with professional athletes? Do you think they still sit down at halftime and have fags and run around and, geez, he looks a good type, this bloke. He looks like he can run and kick. The professional athlete can talk for starters. Yeah, but the professional athlete also has- Measurement scenarios on his back to know what his running patterns are like, how long he can run for, how long he needs to have a rest for. There's all of these things. I just told you. There's a reason that sports science- I just told you.
Speaker 13Good horses won't do anything and it doesn't matter. Vo Rogue is a freak. Farlap was a freak. Go and do the same. We all watch Farlap. He put another 100 horses through his place and they're all useless.
Speaker 12You're talking three horses out of 45 million there. Yeah. Okay. So what I'm saying is if I'm buying horses at a yearling sales, I want to know that if all of the data comes back and says they're not at an elite level, I want to go to a lower grade and win with it and move it on. Yeah. I want to have an opportunity to be able to get the best return I can.
Speaker 1I think there's both sides to the argument. And I agree with a lot that you say, Johnny and Wayne, obviously. I think you probably should use a little bit more data from time to time. Piss off. What would you know?
Speaker 13Go to 400 Epsom Road and get your trainer's license. Yeah, you heard me. Go to 400 Epsom Road and get your trainer's license and take me on,
Speaker 1Eric. Take me on. Each to their own way. And I'm only stirring it because I know how red you go when we talk about data. I love it. Now, now, um, um, but like Moods was adamant that she'd bounced out of that 2000 meter race. And I guess we'll never know because she never got a crack at it. She was so unlucky. No, I'm not saying it's Peter Moody's fault.
Speaker 13Go back, go back a step. You said at the top of this segment that it was a bit strange or what was your quote about the, the, the, the path that she took to get where she was. No, it was like it. It was a difficult program to get her to where. Everyone three weeks ago was saying, this is a stroke of genius by Peter Moody. It's one of the greatest things we've ever seen. It's Peter, Peter Gordon Moody and rah, rah, rah. He's done nothing wrong. What has happened is, is that the races haven't fallen how they want. And maybe they didn't want to take her to Sydney and give her a couple of runs up there. They only want, because you'd already been up there once first up, she went up second time in between would have been three float trips and that takes out of it. Now I can't comment on. Her cause I don't know her at all, but everything takes a toll somewhere along the line. So sometimes we run horses in races that are just really not the right races, but we don't have a lot of choice to get to our final grandfather.
Speaker 12And just quickly, I'm not challenging Peter Moody. I'm just giving my opinion. I wouldn't be honest. And it's only my opinion. So from Moody's perspective, he's an elite trainer. He's a champion trainer. He's trained black caviar. He knows what he's doing. He knows exactly what he's doing. So, you know, from my perspective, that's just my opinion on the data and stuff. He, he may have a completely different opinion and you know what, his results would suggest that he would know more than I know. This is why you're on the show for big opinions.
Speaker 1So, um, but she's outlawed by, she'll be the, I think she's the second best horse in this country. Still, you agree with that? She's a, she's an absolute, well, I think War Woven
Speaker 13hasn't lost any admirers. War Woven could come back in the, in the, in the autumn and I've got a new one. I've got a new one that's emerged.
Speaker 12Here we go. I'm going to tell you, write this horse down. Spit it out. This horse in the autumn next year and to the spring will win everything it runs in. Who's that? Regal Ambition. It's a superstar. Wow. It is an absolute superstar. The sectionals that it ran on Saturday, its last two furlongs to get back, copped the leader's track at Caulfield, should have won the thousand guineas by a furlong, came back, smart play. Normally, Hawksy, we would say, horses that run stepping up in distance to the thousand guineas, you're, you, you will make the correct comment here. Eight times out of 10 go to the wakeful. Yep. They all go to the wakeful and then potentially under the oats.
Speaker 13Hoping, hoping to run a trip. Hoping, hoping. Yep. Cause you don't know, you're unproven.
Speaker 12I spoke to JD after the run in the thousand guineas. I said, geez, you go to the wakeful, that'll just walk in. He said, no, no, no. We're just going to, we're going to go back to the seven. We think it's a seven. Seven miler. It, it was an extraordinary win. A great ride from Mickey D, very confident ride from him to go back. And the way he'd unleashed two furlongs out, and we'll have a good look in the, in the break Hawksy, I'll show you, it was unbelievable. It is. So what's he going to do in the autumn? It is, it is, she's an alibi. That's what it is. Okay. Wow. It will, it will go into the autumn and it will win. What was the big race? She's alibi, the $10 million thing, the golden eagle or the King Charles or the Don. The, the one that the four-year-old's running. Ah, that's a golden eagle. Yeah. Well, it'll, it'll win the golden, it'll, you bet, bet it, back it now. It'll win the golden eagle. It's a freak. It's not, now it's not like.
Speaker 13I'm calling it a freak. It's a freak. It's not like you to make a big statement, John. No. Well, I'm telling you it's a freak. It's a freak. Have we got, Ross, have we got all this on tape? I wonder what the. So that we can replay this next. I wonder what the data look like, Hawksy. Wow. Must have been pretty good. The data must be good.
Speaker 146 minutes past 10. Now, there's a lot of text messages coming through. I'll get to them straight after our next break. Yes, we are going to talk about the Nick Ryan situation. It's going to be part of the stewards room. There is plenty happening. So it is on the agenda today. We'll get to it in just a moment. But we're going to talk about the Melbourne Cup next. This is the Monday Means Test on Cup E.
Speaker 2This. Is Giddea. With Gareth Hall.
Speaker 1Welcome back to Giddea. This is the Monday Means Test. Hi, Gareth. The Golden Eagle was running track record time. So you would have three horses breaking the track record first. She's alibi to win. I can't see that happening, even if she got clear run. That's from Darren. Wayne, you were correct. There's nothing Nolan could have done once he was in that spot. However, there is only one person responsible for being where he was. And that was Al Nolan. Luke Nolan had no choice. But Ethan Brown on Jimmy Brown. No, Jimmy Starr. He did? We haven't talked about Jimmy. Talking about data. The data show you that he's a sprinter these days against these top 40 horses. Data shows us he's a sprinter.
Speaker 12But the problem is if you draw 18 over 1,300 metres, you miss a start two lengths. They jog up on the corner. They didn't go that quick. But they jog up on the corner and he's 17 lengths from them. Is he a seer force? Yeah, he'll go to the oar, yeah. I mean, you physically couldn't make the ground. Hawksy made a good point. Once he drew out there over the 1,300, you were buggered.
Speaker 1The option was Hawksy to predict they were always going to do that to him. And Jag right back to last and come around and try and find a three-wide and cover spot. Less economical, but least a chance. That's the Luke Nolan, right? A lot of comments regarding Luke Nolan's right here. Hey, Johnny, what happened to Jimmy? No luck from the gates. Correct. Too far back. With the depressing heavy showers in the morning, surprised people didn't abandon plans. Women especially deserve to take a bow. With the way that they put their spring outfits together, attending events with unpromising weather is the true test. And the sporting capital of the world, once again,
Speaker 13delivered. That's the plus, though, with Ticketek. When you're buying, you're pre-purchasing your tickets, you will turn up. But it was good the people that did because by 3 o'clock the day was magnificent. Yeah.
Speaker 1Do we have to take another break before the heart out, Paul? I'll do that now, then I promise we'll get into the Melbourne Cup. And we've got the oh-no there as we talk about the Melbourne Cup. I don't want to start on a negative here when we have a chat about the Melbourne Cup, but since we're going to have a chat about the great race, this is one of the biggest talking points on Saturday morning. Barrier 24, Gareth. Oh, no. Yeah, yeah, barrier 24 for James A. Brady. See you walking up like you're a superstar. Yeah. The situation with Defiantly, I feel for everybody involved, Australian Bloodstock, obviously Joseph O'Brien and his team, and the big group of owners that are living their dream, having a Melbourne Cup runner, and he doesn't pass the trot up on the Saturday. Now, they tell me if the trot up was yesterday or today, he would have been given the tick of approval, but because he had just a slight bruised heel, basically, that he didn't trot up as well as the Victorian, Racing Victoria vets wanted him to. Now, you can understand that Racing Victoria vets have got a job to do. They have to judge that horse on what they saw on that Saturday morning. And because the final fields are announced that day at 4.30. And no emergencies. And no emergencies. So if the emergencies were in play, they would have given that horse correct until Tuesday morning. So if a horse passed a CT scan and a PET scan, then if they've got a minor issue, they deserve. And the owners deserve every possibility to let that horse prove his fitness. And they should get up right until Tuesday morning for our great race, Johnny. It's not fair.
Speaker 12Yeah, and can I tell you, I think the scrutiny now around the vetting of these horses to make sure that we are having the safest race we can possibly have. Which it now is. Which it now is, which is great. Be mindful, you know, St. George, second in a Caulfield Cup. Yeah, but he didn't pass the scan. Didn't pass the scan. So he didn't make it either. But the point that I do want to highlight here is we should have emergencies. There needs to be two emergencies now at least with this scrutiny, because I agree. I mean, I think fundamentally that horse could have overcome the issue potentially. And now all that's going to happen is he'll run on the last Saturday. Subject to him passing the vet, but I'm sure he will. And obviously it costs a lot of
Speaker 1money with the technology, but it is 2026. We are betting on this race.
Speaker 13Three minutes. Three. Well, last time I asked, I said, what is it going to cost to have 24 plus three, four, five emergencies? You'd have five. I think there was 30 acceptances, wasn't there? Yeah. There was 30 acceptances for the race. So we're going to have six emergencies. Last time I asked, it was a few years ago, it was 3 million bucks to have the emergencies.
Speaker 12I think the problem is they can't put it on the tote. Yeah. That's the issue, right? There's lots of other issues as well.
Speaker 13So the criteria is what it is. We know where we are and it's bloody unfortunate. And trust me, it's not fair. Well, nothing's fair when you don't get it right.
Speaker 1I know, but when you've got.
Speaker 13It wasn't fair for Shiza Alibi and all the people in the back of the $1.65, but that's the racing.
Speaker 1When you're paying this much money to get a horse into the cup and you're in the top 24 and you've got a stone bruise and you'll be right on Sunday and Monday, and because there's no emergencies in 2026, and I know Gil McLaughlin reckons, I think when I had a chat to him a few weeks back about the one pool, he reckons it'll be next year or he's confident.
Speaker 12The emergency? Yes, because it needs to happen. Well, with a one pool, it will, because I would imagine in the UK, they run 35 or something, don't they? Or 32 or something.
Speaker 1And people are betting on it. And the story was broken by Joel Cain, who's obviously one of the very best, the run home with Fletch on 11.70, because his mates were in the horse. And so we're getting this information. I was going to say, someone else says he ends up done.
Speaker 13You, Gareth, you wouldn't be happy with that, would you?
Speaker 1He did break it on Winners with Gareth Hall on a Saturday morning. Oh, I can't remember. So as soon as the horse doesn't pass, immediately he should be told, the stewards should send out a media release and let the punters know, because people were still backing defiantly that Saturday morning, knowing that he wasn't in the race. All in. All in, so you do your money. You do your money.
Speaker 12In those instances, that should be refunded.
Speaker 13Hang on, so go back. So when was it actually officially taken out? Saturday morning. It was taken out Saturday morning.
Speaker 1Yeah. But Joel Cain was the first to tell everybody.
Speaker 13But so he told you at 8 o'clock. What time did the horse come out?
Speaker 1No, it was about after. It was after 9.30.
Speaker 13So what time did the horse come out?
Speaker 1I don't know.
Speaker 13Stewards can only do what they can do. I know. And they can only give it. Correct. It might be. The trainer ringing the owner straight away going, it's going to be out. It's going to be out. The stewards have got a process to go through.
Speaker 1I know, because they've got to tell the owners before they can tell everyone. But under those circumstances, it's the Melbourne Cup. I get it. Yeah, it's the Melbourne Cup.
Speaker 13It sucks. No, no. Whichever way you look at it, it sucks. It's got to be racing Saturday. It's not fair.
Speaker 1Yeah, race is Saturday.
Speaker 13Yep. And you know what? If it gets beat, people say, ah, but it was never going to win the Melbourne Cup. I don't agree with that.
Speaker 1Well, it's going to be too short for you.
Speaker 13Correct. It's a totally different race.
Speaker 1It's 10.58. Alexis Melbourne Cup. He'll be trying to win it for the second time. Wayne has even had a look at the Melbourne Cup.
Speaker 13I've got an idea. Yeah. No idea.
Speaker 110.58, we'll talk about the Melbourne Cup next year. This is Giddyup. It is great to have your company on this Monday morning.
Speaker 2Welcome back to Giddyup.
Speaker 1Let's have a chat about the Melbourne Cup. We will ask Johnny, because Wayne has got no idea. But you can still train stays, because you finished second, didn't you, in one year? My lucky day.
Speaker 13That was Johnny's mate that said that we couldn't train stays. I do remember that. What was your mate's name? Can't say. Larry, wasn't it? Larry. Larry. Lawrence?
Speaker 1No. Larry. Shoosh, boys.
Speaker 12Edgar. Edgar Murrell. Edgar. He said it.
Speaker 13He did say it. He did say it.
Speaker 1Point of Law is at 6.50. This is Johnny's horse. He kissed Ethan Brown after the Geelong Cup, if you missed that. Did sickening behaviour, really. Trust Your Instinct at $8. Hopewell Rock at $10. Chocolates at $10. Jujica Bow at $11. So You Are is on fire. The Bendigo Cup winner at $13. Middle Earth at $15. Sons and Lovers at $19. James J. Braddock, $19. Enver Jard, $23. Goody Two Shoes, $26. Saran, $26. Mr. Monaco, $26. Sakuma, $29. Soul of Spain, $31. Knights Choice, $40 to $1. Wine Dark Sea, $41. Kislyar, $40 to $1. And then big prices for the rest, led by the Australian bloodstock runners in Vauban and Royal Supremacy, along with Asterix and Future History, all at $61. Johnny, who wins the Melbourne Cup?
Speaker 12Very, very, very interesting race this year, as is indicated by the prices. I think there's 10 or 12 horses under $20-odd, which is not normal in the Melbourne Cup. You normally have sort of four or five reasonably fancied horses and a lot out the gate. So just quickly, Gareth, if I can. Yes. Sons and Lovers, way too much weight and too slow. Trust your instinct. Very difficult from the barrier, but J-Mac and an elite horse can win. Yes. Knights Choice, no. Middle Earth, perfect prep for this horse, looking for $3,200. Yes. Vauban, no. Infajar, nice staying horse, can run top eight. If it's bottomless, Royal Supremacy can run top five, otherwise no. Wyndark C, no. Asterix, no. Goody Two Shoes is as old as Bart, no. Can't be. Dew Akibo, huge run previously, can win, can run top six. Hopewell Rock. Might have, I'm not quite sure. Did you quote it in the prices? What price is it? Yeah, it's a big price. I don't think it's. It's got a good hope. Yeah, I haven't heard great things out of Werribee. Nice horse. Zach Lloyd's on fire. Yes. One smooth operator, please. Stop it. Soul of Spain, stop it. Tsar Rain, if the track's dry, can win. If it's worse than the dead five, no. So You Are, stop it. Future History, stop it. James Braddock will need a bottomless wet track to finish top five. Kizar. Kizar shouldn't even be in the race. Point of Law, got a great hope. Strictly Business, no. Mr. Monaco is flying. Huge run the other day, can run top five. Zakuma, no. And Chocolates can win. So, in summary, if you're boxing trifectas.
Speaker 1Do you know what we're going to do just before we give your betting strategy? We'll do what we do with Mark Hunter. I just want yes or no. Okay. I did it with Gator and he was probably not really what I wanted. But so, yes or no, Johnny? No problems. So, Johnny O'Neill, Lexus Melbourne Cup, yes or no? number one sons and lovers no two trust your instinct yes three nights choice no four middle earth yes five vorban no six envajar yes seven rules supremacy no eight wine dark sea no nine asterix no 10 goody two shoes no 11 juji kabo yes 12 hopewell rock yes 13 one smooth operator no 14 soul of spain no 15 saran yes 16 so you are no 17 future history no 18 james j bradick no 19 kislyar no 20 point of law yes 21 strictly business no 22 mr monica yes 23 sakuma no and 24 chocolates yes
Speaker 13okay well that should set up for a good uh oh no or yes yes yes next monday when we cut all that up you're on the go i've either had absolutely no idea what's your putting
Speaker 12strategy then i'm just going to take a big box trifecta yeah uh i'm going to box numbers 2 4 11 12 15 20 22 and 24 i'm going to have a nice bet on middle earth chocolates and point of law
Speaker 1would you be confident in harry coffee riding chocolates now he's told me this morning that after having surgery on that collarbone which he hurt there on saturday so what and i'm saving on trust your instincts sorry so
Speaker 12they're my four bets i had a good chat with harry i'll text him rara back and forward he told me that um he was in having surgery uh look let's hope what do you
Speaker 13have done do you actually know he
Speaker 12had a collarbone yeah no no
Speaker 13but what do they do do they just screw it or put it together yeah so is he going to have other rides before the melbourne years that's his plan well you'd have to yeah you couldn't go straight to the melbourne
Speaker 12cup and wow well look the interesting thing is that you know the doctors will make sure he's right you know look he's obviously look he's a tough young man and a wonderful rider so he's going to want to be doing this yeah but it's not this is probably going out there playing in the hawthorne grand
Speaker 13final with a puncture lung and you you throw yourself down this is a guy on top of a horse at 55 kilometers an hour with 23 others around
Speaker 12you i think i read that michael d's been released from strictly business he's on standby and he's on standby for chocolate this is what harry told
Speaker 1me this morning yes i'm very confident i'll be right by tomorrow surgery has worked have a couple more conversations today with the doctor and surgeon before giving them the all clear very positive about the situation so he wants to ride he's he's got a live chance in the melbourne cup he's i think she's on the third line of betting um he's had to get down to 51 so it's been a long preparation because harry knew that this was the weight that she had um so he's right to go he's put his hand up so who's to sit from an owner's perspective and a trainer's perspective and he's he's got his hand up so who's to sit from an owner's perspective and a trainer's perspective so what are you looking so do you trust the jockey or do you take that decision out of his hands
Speaker 13yeah it's a tough one isn't it because if you go out there and it all works well it's fantastic if it goes out and goes to custard it's not uh not good so you probably you know do you have a choice yeah it's a gee that's this is this is very unique this this this could end up being one of the greatest stories in the history of history if chocolates gets up and gets the chocolates so what do you do do you back him up and he's got the job done so he's got the job done so he's got the job Chocolates or chocolates?
Speaker 12I thought you said chocolates. I did. I know. If you get the chocolates.
Speaker 13If you get the chocolates, if you get the chocolates.
Speaker 12He's a poet.
Speaker 13Look, having surgery yesterday and riding three days later in Melbourne Cup is probably going to be unprecedented. Yeah. So does the doctor walk in and go, go, Harry, how are you going? And just give him a slap on the back and he goes, ah! You go, mate, well, you're not right to ride. I mean, I don't know. Do they go through and do a hip and shoulder? Do they go through and have to do a bench press of 30 kilos? I mean, I'm being serious now. I mean, it's going to be a very, very interesting. From an owner's perspective. You know Kieran well as well.
Speaker 12What do you think will happen? Look, I think from an owner's perspective, Kieran, the doctors and H will make the right call. I mean, there's, I would love him to ride the horse if I owned the horse. He's done everything he can possibly do. He's got his weight down. He's got his iron. For those who don't know, Johnny, for those who don't know,
Speaker 13Harry's had 60. He's had cystic fibrosis all his life. I think it's cystic fibrosis. And, you know, he's been up against battles with his personal life of his well-being since he was very, you know, born. So he's done an amazing job and is no doubt one of the greatest blokes in that room. So there wouldn't be a dry eye in the room. If he got, if he got the cash, it'd be all about Harry and what a story it would be. But it'll be out of his, I
Speaker 12really think it's out of his hands though. He can put his hand up and present the owners. It'll be, it'll be the doctors and Kieran. It'll be the doctors and Kieran. I mean, if Kieran doesn't think and the doctors don't think it's safe for him to ride the horse, he won't be riding it no matter how it is.
Speaker 13It's out of Kieran's hands really. It's actually, you know, he was going to be up to. I mean, in theory, it's not the club doctor. It would have to, I would guess it would have to be the surgeon that did the job to actually come in on Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock.
Speaker 12I'm hoping he's incredible. I'm hoping he rides the horse, you know, and I'd love to see Paddo's in it. And obviously it's one of Lawrence Eales' horse, a heap of blokes. I'd love to see it run really well.
Speaker 1Does the RV doctor have something to say?
Speaker 13Well, I mean, I would assume yes, but I would have to think the surgeon that did the job would have to be the first bloke you would have to consult. Sounds like he's happy.
Speaker 1He's happy with the job that he's done.
Speaker 13Well, someone has to tick it off and it would, I'm guessing it would start with the surgeon and finish with the Racing Victoria sports, sports doctor. Kevin Blake. Yeah, sorry. What, and what is the track? You spoke to Liam O'Keefe off, off here.
Speaker 1It's going to be, so the track will be probably a soft six. There's rain predicted from 12 to. Um, later tonight. So it's going to rain all afternoon.
Speaker 13From midday today. Yeah. It's going to rain.
Speaker 1To the early evening and there's rain tomorrow. So he's, he, he was right there when we had a chat to him Friday, Liam O'Keefe. His intel is that it'll probably be around a soft six. Right. With the information that he's gathering from the, the weather experts and how he understands how his track is. I couldn't believe how the track was.
Speaker 13Yeah. As I said, when I walked it at a six, or not walked it, I walked 400 metres of it at 6.30 on Saturday night. I couldn't believe how good it was. It was bloody ridiculously good.
Speaker 1Um, Sons and Lovers, Hopewell Rock, Goody Two Shoes, Chocolates. Those are the top four for Kevin Blake. Um, Point of Law was the tip along with Trust Your Instinct with Dino and also Mickey Gatton. So there you go.
Speaker 12Different opinions. Hey, and also, um, there's a couple of text messages came through to see what Lloyd and Nick Williams liked in the race. Obviously legends of the cup. Um, I don't know how many they've won. Plenty. I'm going to say seven. I'll be close. No, I'm going to say seven. Unbelievable. So, uh, Nick's very strong Trust Your Instinct to beat Point of Law, Middle Earth and Hopewell Rock. So those who are interested in, um, in Nick and Lloyd's, uh, selections, there you go. And what about you? No, I don't know.
Speaker 13Give us one. I don't know. I've got, I've had, I've generally got no idea, but I just hope it's, uh, not the overseas horses because I just hope it's an Aussie. Can't get stuffed. No. Yeah. What are you saying that for? I hope it's an Aussie horse because we can, uh. Well, it's an Aussie. It's an Aussie horse. Aussie horse, Point of Law now. Aussie horse. Yeah. Anyway. No, it's a, well, it's a better story when it's a local. It's a better story.
Speaker 1100% it is. Better story. 11 minutes past 10.
Speaker 13So you were going for chocolate, so what were you doing? Mate, mate, that, that would be the story. I'm serious. There wouldn't be a dry eye in the jogger's room if Harry won that after what he's gone through. And I mean, no, you didn't see the vision, but being there live, I mean, he walked back around the ambulance track, which is on the inside of the grass track. He had his shirt off, his vest off with no skullcap and walking back. It was, you know, so what a, what a ripper.
Speaker 1It's 11 minutes past 11. We've got a busy end to the show. The Steward's Room will be next.
Speaker 2Mr. Hawks and Mr. O'Neill, can you please report to the Steward's Room?
Speaker 1Well, it was dramatic. Drama before Derby Day. Nick Ryan's two horses there on Derby Day were scratched, of course, and there were big chances to and two of the features after there was a inspection by the integrity department there from Racing Victoria at his stables on Saturday morning. And he was found to be in possession of two syringes of synthetic EPO. So then the stewards then scratched his two horses there from Saturday morning. Doubtland, that was an H-way chance in the Coolmore and Anglais, who was a chance there in the Wakeful. Now, the inquiry was adjourned on Saturday until today. And as we speak, the inquiry is still going on regarding Nick Ryan. So his career is in limbo at the moment. These are serious charges that he'll be facing and then we'll get a decision whether he pleads guilty or not guilty, Wayne. Or are you going to go first, John?
Speaker 12How do you, how do you, first of all, the. The stuff that he's got. And I, I read it in the papers as everybody would on the weekend, that EPO. Yep. How do you get it?
Speaker 13Hand on my heart, I don't know, because if you. Surely it would have been the talk of the trainer's heart. Absolutely it was. It's been a talk since, uh, since Saturday at midday when both horses were withdrawn. But that's the question. I mean, where, where do you get the EPO from? I mean, you know, I joked and said, uh, what, you just go to a 7-Eleven to the EPO section. I mean, you, you can't get it. I mean, it's, it's, it's an illegal thing that. You know, the average Joe Blow, no one's allowed to have.
Speaker 12Well, clearly the challenge here is going to be that vets or associated people with some vets have no doubt access this somehow. Now, what, what, what is this? I know, I know it's a performance enhancing drug. We get it. But what's it used for outside? I mean, I know it was well documented, the Lance Armstrong thing and all of that, but I believe it puts more oxygen in your blood, which enables horses to be able to sprint for longer or maintain a higher speed for longer.
Speaker 1The drug that was found in his glove box is a form of EPO, which is used in humans to treat kidney failure and support drug for cancer patients during chemo. And it increases the blood's oxygen carrying capacity, which of course boosts the horse's endurance. So it doesn't make them run faster. It makes them run at their top for longer.
Speaker 12So in that instance, you would have to access it through legal means or illegal means, I would have thought.
Speaker 13How else are you going to get it? Well, it's not that Butte is something that we use all the time. And in human terms. In human terms, it's Nurofen. It's a painkiller and it's anti-inflammatory. So we have a seven-day withhold on that. So it's not like it's an accidentally just didn't go seven days and gave it five days and whatever. This is something completely, completely different. And I'm not smarter or dumber than anyone else from the fact that this supposedly, the rumours are. There's a lot of rumours going around. There's a lot of crap rumours around. Which is not fair. Correct. And that's going to happen. I mean, look, Nick is a personal friend of mine. I mean, I was texting him on Friday. Yeah. And he's okay.
Speaker 1But he's obviously, he's done the wrong thing at the moment. And that's why he's obviously in these inquiries we speak. And he'll have to face the consequences.
Speaker 12It's going to get a lot deeper than just him. Well, we don't know that. But when the questions come to say, where did you get the stuff from? What's he say? I just found it in my glove box. I don't know. I mean, he's going to have to, if he's swearing under oath, he's got to say where he's got the drugs from.
Speaker 13If Nick's doing this, someone else.
Speaker 12And then this is the thing. And then that just opens up. A can of worms, doesn't it? Yeah. It's always interesting that the thing I find amazing, and I know we spoke about this off air quickly, is the Melbourne Cup Carnival being the highest profile time of the year, certainly in Melbourne, I would say. Probably in Australia, probably around the world, probably from an Australian perspective. It's as big as Royal Ascot and the Breeders' Cup, no doubt. So this stuff would be going on, I would imagine, if it's going on, during the course of the year. Why, when you have 80 plus thousand on a Derby day, and you've got all the wonderful staff and all the events and everything, why do these things seem to sort of raise to the circus? Well, it's. Or the surface at the most
Speaker 1important time of the year. Well, it's a situation where the integrity unit at Racing Victoria probably got information and they've acted on it. And they've probably got information that we don't know. And that's why they've. The compliance team have obviously acted to that evidence and they've raided Nick Ryan's stables on that Saturday morning. They're just doing their job. And integrity is paramount in this sport of thoroughbred racing. Of course it is. Now, we all know this is the great. Are we thinking it's wider than him? Well, I don't know. I don't know. I don't want to. I don't know. That's just rumour. I don't want to. I don't want.
Speaker 12So can I ask one question? Are we just assuming that Nick Ryan is the only person in the whole of Australia that trains horses? Well. Well, the facts at the moment.
Speaker 1I can't confirm what's denied. Has he discovered the gold nugget in
Speaker 12underneath the ground that no one else has been looking for?
Speaker 1Johnny, the facts that we know. Facts are that he's been caught. He's been. He's been obviously. Stable's been raided. They've found this illegal substance there and he's in an inquiry as we speak. We don't know any other facts. But we all know in this racing game, and I've been in this game not as long as you two, but there's always people pushing the boundaries. And it'll continue on. And the job of the compliance team in racing. Let's call pushing boundaries cheating. It's cheating. People cheat. And it's the job to catch these people. And integrity is paramount. Now, there's people that. People train a few winners and go, oh, he's cheating. But until you catch someone and then they get a positive, then they've got to face the consequences. Obviously. We're innocent until proven guilty. Correct. And this is all alleged with Nick Ryan. Obviously, we know the facts that there was an illegal substance in his club box. Well, this is obviously beyond.
Speaker 13This is obviously beyond reasonable doubt. This is not a hearsay. It wasn't administered and whatever. It wasn't administered, but you had it. So this is obviously, I'm guessing, has to be an open and shut case from that point of view. But is there seven other contributing factors? Unless he says someone put it in his club box and he didn't know anything about it. But hang on. That's why we are having an inquiry at Race of Victoria from 10 a.m. this morning, which was 40 minutes ago or an hour ago now.
Speaker 12How many people drive his car? Who's got access to his car? Whereas all these things are going to come out. Maybe someone's put stuff in his club box. Maybe it wasn't that borrowed his car. I don't know.
Speaker 1You test all my horses. Are they positive? Prove it. Like I might have just had it in my club.
Speaker 12And this is going to be the scenario?
Speaker 1Yeah, I might have had it in my. But was I going to use it? No. So we don't know all these factors.
Speaker 12And then the other thing is, the other thing is, you know, has he got family members that have. I don't know. This is going to open a can.
Speaker 13I'll tell you what was sad this morning. When I walked through the tunnel, and I'm not going to name names, but one of his employees looked at me and said, any positions available? And I thought, shit, you know, like it's far and wide, isn't it? You know what I mean? I mean, I'm genuinely talking genuine here. That, you know, it's far and wide. It's not just about Nick here. I mean, you're employing a lot of people in there. And we have a big family tree that's sort of, you know, the tentacles and the roots go far and wide. So what's the.
Speaker 1When you talk in the trainer's heart, what's the emotions of the trainers? Well, the guys that
Speaker 13don't cheat are pissed off. I mean, people are angry. I mean, you. You're out there, and you are doing your absolute best. And if you're not cheating, you're going, well, I don't care about the cheats. I mean, let's just get the penalties. Let's quadruple them. Let's not stuff them around. Let's make any of these penalties serious penalties. Now, I've said this on radio and TV a thousand times. Over in America, there is a row called death row. And in certain states of America, if you do the. If you do the wrong thing, you're going to go and sit there until your time is up, and you're going to get the lethal injection, and it's good night, Irene, literally. So it doesn't stop people from doing it. But do we need these people in the industry? The innocent guys are saying, do we need that in the industry? Now, the people that cheat. What, death row for someone who's. No, no, no, no. I know what you mean. No, let's be serious. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So the end result is, you're never, ever, ever going to stop. Is our industry 100% clean? No, it's not. There's not one industry in the world that's 100% clean. Now, it doesn't matter where you start, whether it's politics, whether it's religion, whatever, there's always going to be some sort of corruption in every industry. And there are people currently in jail right now that are not axe murderers and pedophiles and serial killers. I mean, they might be white-collar crimes. So, you know, it is always going to happen. But if we don't have credible, you know, line in the sand. Terry Bailey, I did an interview with Terry Bailey, former chief steward, and he nailed more people than. than anyone has in the history of racing. And it was a double-pray spread in the Herald Sun and it was put in bold, his comment. He said, I'm here to protect the people that get up at 3.30 in the morning every day of the week and do the right thing. And that always stuck with me. And the other thing that stuck with me, he said, Mr. Hawks, there is only one rule book. There is not two. And they're probably two of the things that stuck with me. And when you're innocent and when you're genuine and you're having a crack, and you know what? I'm happy to go to RVL and be put on the lie detector test. I wonder how many others are. There's going to be a lot of others that will, but there's going to be plenty that won't.
Speaker 12Have we looked at Nick's results? Like, is he training winners? Does that matter though? Does that matter? But the point is. No, no, no, that doesn't matter. That doesn't matter. No, I'm not. Let me tell you, I'm not. I'm not standing up in this instance. I don't have enough information. Because if you do that, it's unfair to the people. No, no, no, no. What I'm saying is, like, he has been found with EPO or other stuff, which is an illegal substance, in his glove box. If he's found guilty to have obtained that, purchased it, done whatever he's done. Whether you're punting, doesn't matter whether you've got. He's in huge strife,
Speaker 13and he should be in huge strife. Whether you're punting, whether you've done whatever, and you're trying to rig races, because that's what it is in theory. I mean, in the day, you are trying to change the outcome of a legitimate race by giving your horse an upper hand. I mean, that's criminal cases. That's criminal if the police get involved, which, who knows, with this case, but. The police aren't involved. I'm not saying they are, but they might be, Gareth, because the bottom line is, I know we're sitting around the pubby having a beer talking about it, but, I mean, everyone's listening, and this is one of the biggest topics. I'd rather not be talking about it, but it's not fair if we don't talk about it, to be honest, because someone's. I'll tell you what, someone said to me on Saturday night, you never mentioned John Leake, and he got three years, right? And I said, yeah, but I didn't know John Leake got three years. I don't look at the stewards. What did he get three years for? He got three years for administering whatever had happened. He got caught tubing a horse
Speaker 1on the way to Warrnambool, which you're not allowed to do.
Speaker 13You know what? We're not allowed to do it, but I didn't know anything about that. Yeah. And as I said. What do you mean you didn't know anything about that? I didn't know that he got disqualified. I didn't know.
Speaker 12I'll tell you one thing we do at the end. We sit back and we say, the integrity of racing is critical. Paramount. We know that. It's the most important thing. I can say from my perspective and a wide group of owners and friends that we have, we invest a lot of money in the industry. We love it. We love the horses. We love the relationships with the trainers and other owners and the jockeys and the staff that we have. So from an integrity perspective, Racing Victoria should double down on this. Racing Australia should double down on this. double down on this and there should be more testing, more stuff done to prevent any of this rubbish going on. A hundred percent. And that's when- Any of it going on.
Speaker 1When you've got to make strong stances with strong penalties, but you understand when you go into this game, there is probably situations where you do get beaten when it's not a level playing field. Clearly. But that doesn't mean somebody has to stop trying. No, you've got to stop it.
Speaker 12I go back and I've experienced a really nice horse in the past, not to raise people from the past, but a really nice horse that was found to have been not treated the way it should have been and died. We paid a lot of money for this horse from Japan. It was a very, very good horse. And the person that was involved in that scenario clearly got the penalty that they needed to get. So look, fundamentally, we are all focused on a wonderful industry, the beautiful horses that are in it, the great people that are in it and double down and catch all. All the cheats and get them out. And Hawksy, as you said, if it's, if you're cheating and you're doing that and you are found guilty, like they should in the AFL, let's make it pretty clear, right? One strike, one strike, two strike, three is all rubbish. If you are doing things that you are not to do, you are, you are to get suspended. Is this cruel to the horse? Is it? I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I'd like to ask from a vet's perspective.
Speaker 13I'm not asking you to, I'm just putting it out there. Is this cruel to the horses? Is this? Is this cruel? What were you doing? EP, I know. EPO is in your body. So, I mean, you, you're adding to it. So if you've, we have vitamin C.
Speaker 1Well, many people say when people buy car horses, you should be allowed to do that because it's actually helping them with their recovery, right?
Speaker 13But I mean, I know, but I don't know the answers to this, Gareth. I swear I don't know. It would be good to get a vet on and find that out. Well, you know. Be good. Anyway, we're going to move on.
Speaker 12So what do you think is going to happen?
Speaker 1I don't know. If he's found guilty, he gets a long time. Like that's probably.
Speaker 12How long does he get if he's found guilty?
Speaker 1Minimum five. We'll take a break. We'll come back with the drive-by. And then of course we've got our oh no's and yes, yes, yes's and something for the battlers. So it's a quick end to the means test on this Monday morning.
Speaker 14On the Monday means test, all thanks to the Dash Cover Company. Dash mats for your car. Dashcovercompany.com.au. Anyone and anything can cop it. It's the drive-by with Wayne Hawks.
Speaker 1His team do a clearance safe drive. Stop dash glare with a moulded dash mat. Great racing. Great racing people involved with Dash Cover. Get on to them. Get the colours. Get the little jockey silks and the colours. Come on, get on to them. Last week. And he said he'll give you. Dash mat. He's a ripper.
Speaker 12He's a legend. So what we need to do is get the colours moulded into them and put them on the dash mat.
Speaker 13That's not quite true, Gareth. What do you mean? Tell the truth. We're going to give him a dash mat for his mouth. That's not very nice. You've got to say that. No, I said. We're all bloody friends.
Speaker 12Anyway, don't worry. He can give you one from the mouth, but give him a call and get on. Have we got it online there or something? Yeah. So dashcovercompany.com.au. Okay. Get on and buy one and tell him to put your colours in it. Righto. Jockey silks colours.
Speaker 13So my drive-by was Saturday night. And it was getting a bit late and we're in Moonee Ponds locally because of the races being at Flemington. And I was with Brett Stewart's Snake. Yeah. Now I've got Gareth's attention. Gareth's. Did you live with Brett Stewart? Yeah, I did. Of manly fame. Brett's one of the greatest fullbacks ever. Brett Stewart, Snake. And I was with Brenton Hall, your brother, Gareth, and a few other blokes. And they got an Uber. And so I had to get an Uber as well. And there was about seven of us. And the truth, we're all going back to my place. So round the corner in the quiet streets of Moonee Ponds comes the Taraga, the white Taraga. So Snake and Brenton get in. Poor buggers with some poor bloke pulling up the park. They've just got in the. They thought it was a bloody Uber and they got in the car and it was just a poor bloke pulling up the park. You've never seen two blokes sprint like you've seen these two blokes sprint back to us. Your own nose need a little bit of work. Yeah, they do. That's a drive-by.
Speaker 12I wonder if they had one of those dash mats. Did you have a look for that? You need to be looking for that. Paul. You need to be looking for that when you're getting in those cars.
Speaker 1Do we have a no-no? Yes, we're going to get to our own noses. Yes, yes, yes. Come on. Just keep it rolling. Keep it rolling.
Speaker 13Right, I'll just keep going. James J. Braddock, Barry 24, Gareth Hall. That has to be the top of the tree with you pulling out 24. To old mate on. On Saturday, you dickhead, I'm Wayne. He walked up and went, Gareth, how are you, mate? Love your show. And just kept walking. How embarrassing for Gareth. That's a pretty good oh-no. Well, I wasn't sure whether it was a yes, yes, yes for me or an oh-no. I will say you have trimmed up. Yes. So you're starting to look a little like Gareth. I put it as an oh-no, but it could have been a yes, yes, yes. Excuse me. Yeah, correct.
Speaker 12Are you waxing down like Gareth now as well? Get lost, will you?
Speaker 13Sorry about that. That's my oh-no.
Speaker 1Is that all, Johnny?
Speaker 12That's all. I only have just the she's-a. That's all. Alibi scenario like, you know, Peter was pretty confident and, you know, jockeys, jockeys were jockeys. It's a horse race. Yeah, it's a horse race.
Speaker 1My oh-no is pride of Jenny's out of the champions as officially. We all thought that was going to happen, but she won't be rocking up on champions. J-Mac will be happy.
Speaker 13Because she has been J-Mac's nemesis. Like, to be fair, J-Mac's kryptonite. Since the day he spat it when he rode Via Sistina in the Queen Elizabeth. Yes, yes, yeses.
Speaker 5Yes, yes, yes. Yes, yes, yes. Yes, yes, yes.
Speaker 13The Adelaide boys, the Adelaide connection. Your men from the Gluis camp. They were here in that fine form over the weekend. Dylan Gibbons winning the Russell Balding on Pericles. He's a. And Bjorn Baker. Yep. Young jockey. Young, well, Bjorn wins his share. Dylan Gibbons hasn't. And he's come to four in the last few weeks, Dylan Gibbons. And he's a very, very underrated jockey. And the other yes, yes, yes is this morning driving in here. For the people that aren't in Melbourne, I reckon everybody in Victoria has taken the public holiday today because it was like a Sunday morning at nine o'clock going over the Balti Bridge this morning. So it was fantastic not to have any traffic today.
Speaker 12I've got a couple. Hayes boys flying in Dolla. Is that how you pronounce it? Yes, yeah. It's a cute. I mean, got to the right part of the track, but really good. I thought probably one of the best wins of the day outside of the next episode was Private Eye. What about him to be able to sit 3D J-Mac go bang and just explode past those horses. Great old, great old horse. Great ride. Blake Shin on Terry Henderson's horse, OTI's horse, D'Armas, not quite sure whether it'll. Is it D'Armas? Yeah, D'Armas. Not quite sure whether it'll go onto the Oaks or not, but it was a really, really good result for them. And a really special mention to Harry Coffey. Riding beautifully, worked his bum off, and we're really hoping that he can get through this little challenge. And riding the cup.
Speaker 1All right, then, something for the battlers on Melbourne Cup Day. Wayne, we need a winner. Uncle Wayne, we need a winner.
Speaker 13Good luck tomorrow. How hard's it going to be tomorrow? Oh, with a positive attitude, it'll be much appreciated. Oh, sorry. No, I've got. No, not for me.
Speaker 12Nothing tomorrow. Nothing tomorrow.
Speaker 13There's no point just giving you the tip for the sake of giving you a tip. I'd rather give you nothing than give you something. So shut up. Yes. All right.
Speaker 12I've got a lovely. Two-year-old that I have with Kieran that I'm racing with Sheikh Fahad called Amsterdam in race one. It's a half-brother to Spirewire.
Speaker 1Some people think you have a few cookies Amsterdam style before you come on this show. We've recorded Amsterdam. It's out of secret. Oh, boy. Where are you going with that? So I think it'll be very hard to beat. I don't know.
Speaker 12Really? And I think we've got a nice horse called Barracks going around in the 1400. Drawing a tricky gate. Brownie's riding. If he can push forward and. And get a spot. And then old Gringotts is. I'll say old Gringotts. He's going around in the big dance. Going for his third in a row. Won the last two big dances and going for number three. Going very well. Freshened up lovely. Hard to beat.
Speaker 1Do you know, I've got my 100 to one with bet 365. This is my top finish multi. Trust Your Instinct top four. Middle Earth, James J. Braddock top eight along with Sons and Lovers. And then Goody Two-Shoes top 10. And that was 100 to one. Should have been 400 to one. Johnny, I tipped the first four Blanc one year. Did you really? On radio. Did you? No credit. After the race?
Speaker 13Not bad. You're on six days a week for the last seven years. Good work from you guys.
Speaker 12I'll tell you who was on fire on Saturday just quickly. The main man in the box at the back. He was absolutely. Paulie was on fire. Well done, Paulie. And what about Tags?
Speaker 1Yeah, he turned 40. I didn't know that. He won 40,000 with Betmates.
Speaker 12He had the most magnificent tie on. He was magnificent. Mickey Gannon had the tie on. I didn't know they made them for men. The one that he had on. But anyway, it was quite good. Oh, there's one.
Speaker 1Is that Wayne? Wayne's got a lookalike.
Speaker 12What's your best?
Speaker 1What's your best tomorrow? I'm looking like you. Give us something. What's your best? That's my top 10. Yeah, I know. But you must have one if you're having one bet. I reckon Trust Your Instinct will win the cup.
Speaker 13Okay. Wait for mine for later in the week. Tor Shaven is a two-year-old running in Sydney on Saturday. I don't think it'd be great odds, but fingers crossed. All right. And do you know,
Speaker 1James J. Braddock can win the Melbourne Cup, Johnny, I believe. Anyway, I've got to go with the means test. not going anywhere yeah where you go i'm gonna stay here johnny good luck at the call thank you very much you're gonna punt

Speaker 1gareth hall welcome back to giddy up boys been a big show as you would expect on melbourne cup eve here on giddy up you can tune in to racing wa tv on 7 plus and racing.com it's your ultimate destination for everything racing in the west peter anthonis joins us today pete yeah
Speaker 16morning to you gareth um
Speaker 1geez there was some exciting performances there at ascot on saturday but western miss where are we um great call from darren mccullough but she was 101 at the 200 meter mark but she found a way
Speaker 16i reckon that probably happened three times here on saturday uh lavazzi lavati de mezzo uh western miss and rock fest all looked absolute millions at some point in the straight they've all won um bizarre day to actually review a lot of the races were affected by wind early but the straight has played super sleek and there's some big rating races as a result this is clearly the form meeting to be looking at to be doing all your replays for going forward into the perth carnival because there's going to be some horses that that do some pretty good things over the next month so i'm really excited to actually start the replays this afternoon just get myself ahead of the curve but i i win yeah as visually as good as western miss is going to be this was um you could basically say the same thing about rock fest and the same thing about lavatti de mezzo and they're not even necessarily the best figures on the day g because talk and co has come back with an absolutely enormous win first up and uh she's absolutely a bet for the
Speaker 1winter bottom of that run wow she was placed in a quokka of course talking co after that foot abscess as well so she's obviously got the ability the pierce brothers have done a wonderful job with her in fact they're on fire at the moment they're training really well they won with rock fest in that last race so horses to follow from the end of the day and then they're on fire at the moment this meeting pete because there's a lot to dissect
Speaker 16yeah exactly right look talking co obviously one going forward to the winter bottom as i said um look we go back to the race at sinka stella one uh light clockwork just settled out last like could not win it was impossible for her to win given the way that sinka stella finished off so i think like clockwork regardless where she goes next time out even if it's back to a thousand which i don't think they will but uh that's just an automatic bet for me next time out um she looks an absolute horse to follow next time yeah um
Speaker 1and then you've got of course a fire of giddy coals he didn't have much luck there on on saturday your thoughts there the caracatta with no
Speaker 16and look he he really just pinged the gates too well didn't he uh and lucy had two options then like do you try and roll forward and you know use them up a bit early but that's not necessarily i imagine what the camp would have wanted but vice versa like do you restrain all the way back to last um it was just a victim of circumstances wasn't it but um look in the end he still was there to win late um but that just got run over the top by levante to mezzo who's shown a fair bit of ability on his day so far just still very green so look obviously if you give there and look in the end the tempo of that race is actually a little bit quicker than what i think anyone would have thought as well so um some fascinating numbers to to work through so as i said i've got my work cut out for me in the next few days is he still
Speaker 1the horse to to beat in the guineas a fire of giddy coals after
Speaker 16saturday i wouldn't see why you'd be looking at that performance and thinking anything less of him um i think if anything it just adds a little bit more merit to it he's really just stuck on very very well and clearly not his grand final he's got plenty to come and you can see him taper right off over the last couple of hundred meters there so yeah i think he's still on track for that race that's for sure and who wins
Speaker 1the burgess queen historically it's hard to make up ground on this on this tuesday on melbourne cup day and profit motive is the favorite for the all-conquering mitchell
Speaker 16pateman yard yeah she's as well i'll note there's not a whole heap of speed in that race there's potentially very messy three wide lines so she will need to get clear air at the right time um but i did think that she was the clear and obvious uh favorite g i mean what she did first up with the handbrake on i know it was a very firm deck that belmont one so some of the numbers look a little bit inflated to my eye but she still won so easily that uh yeah it's hard to see her losing that race with with even luck
Speaker 1who wins the melbourne
Speaker 16cup i couldn't care less to be honest g i'll turn up tomorrow i'll have a it's not a race that i'm going to be delving into spending a couple of hours on that's for sure all
Speaker 1right then pete you keep on being peter anthony's we appreciate you and good
Speaker 16luck cheers jay there
Speaker 1we go peter anthony's there tune into racing wa tv on seven plus and racing.com it's your ultimate destination for everything racing in the west you can wake up with new zealand racing kick your day off with a kiwi bet what's gambling really costing you for free and confidential support visit gamblinghelponline.org.au i think jay and ivill is ready to go jane hello to you hi how are you
Speaker 17this morning i am very well
Speaker 1it's hard not to be excited on cup eve but utaki was the venue there that you were concentrating on on saturday um what did you make of that meeting was there any standouts for you what was the highlight jane
Speaker 17look i don't think there were any standouts in terms of what we saw on the racetrack i think there's a stable that's airborne at the moment that picked up a double on the program and that's jono benner he's a local trainer he had crickets win the first race and then a first starter called secure who i think's got uh a fear amount of ability who picked up a win too he was striking in the last 90 days at over 30 pride a sad day so that number is going to have gone up since then so certainly a stable worth following look of the feature races we had the fielding cup it was taken out by uh knights realm who was actually one of the outsiders in the field in terms of the market it beat home the stablemate and solidify who was the favorite uh so a quinella uh team rogers and clint isdale and look um i think just worked out for the horse in terms of the fact that um he sat outside the leader on a slow pace took over at the 600 increased the tempo and then kept running nothing could run him down so um jim chong did a really good job to get him home at the head of the field but uh look he's not a horse that wins out of turn and he's not a horse that i'd be quite sure of if he's not a horse that i'd be quite sure of if he's not a horse that i'd be following following following out of the meeting but what it was is uh out of the meeting but what it was is uh out of the meeting but what it was is uh one of nine races that make up the one of nine races that make up the one of nine races that make up the northern country cup series and there's northern country cup series and there's northern country cup series and there's the final uh which is um the topo cup the final uh which is um the topo cup the final uh which is um the topo cup at um you know in december and there's at um you know in december and there's at um you know in december and there's fifty thousand dollars worth of bonuses fifty thousand dollars worth of bonuses fifty thousand dollars worth of bonuses up for grabs and that so he gets some up for grabs and that so he gets some up for grabs and that so he gets some points points points heading to the final in december which heading to the final in december which heading to the final in december which has has has been a pretty good initiative in new been a pretty good initiative in new been a pretty good initiative in new zealand for trainers with horses zealand for trainers with horses zealand for trainers with horses um at those sort of staying distances um at those sort of staying distances um at those sort of staying distances so so so um that was the positive look the other um that was the positive look the other um that was the positive look the other performance that i think is worth performance that i think is worth performance that i think is worth noting is platinum diamond she was a filly that in her late two-year-old, three-year-old, early three-year-old campaign picked up three listed races in succession and she looked quite smart as a winter galloper but didn't really come up through the winter. It was a little bit disappointing. They sort of hit the reset with her and she was second up this preparation and she's made it back into the winner's circle. So that was for Lisa Ladder. So Platinum Diamond, nice to see a filly that's always shown a bit of ability get back to some winning form.
Speaker 1The Bell Moreno Stakes is the feature at Ellerslie. Everyone is celebrating Melbourne Cup Day even across the Tasman, their traditional meeting and Top Shelf's the favourite with Bet365. Al Vanzador looking to bounce back to some of his best form along with Crescetti on the second line of betting. Have you got an opinion in that feature there tomorrow, Jane? Look,
Speaker 17not a huge opinion but it's a massive day at Ellerslie tomorrow and as you mentioned, you know, the Melbourne Cup, it's a race that stops the nation. We always say it stops too. Nations because you always get right behind the Melbourne Cup and just like in Australia, there's everyday New Zealanders that don't follow racing day to day that certainly know that the Melbourne Cup's on. So it's a great meeting in New Zealand at Ellerslie. Al Vanzador is the interesting galloper. He's won the race the last two years so he's looking for three in a row but he does need to recapture his form. Top Shelf deserves to be favourite. She's a lovely up and coming Savabell mare that I think will be really hard to hold out but it's a nice meeting at Ellerslie. I do like a horse and run in race number one. So race one, number one, Perfect Chaos, I think is the programme tomorrow but I'm looking forward to Cup Day too. As I'm guessing you are, Gareth, it must be pretty exciting to have a runner in the car.
Speaker 1Yeah, I can't wait. It is a little nerve-wracking but you've just got to try and overcome barrier 24 now, Jane. So we'll just cross our fingers and toes but you run the race through your head a thousand times. You're just so grateful that you've got this opportunity to share this moment with some wonderful people. So yeah, anyway, you just hope your horse gets around safe, gets the luck that you need and in life you need a lot of luck, Jane, and tomorrow will need a lot of luck but you've got to be in it to win it. Here's your tip, Jane Shae Braddock, of course.
Speaker 17Oh, look, to be fair, I hate to say this to you but I really liked him until the barrier dropped. Oh, don't do that to me.
Speaker 1It's like a kick a man while he's down, Jane. I know. I've been a
Speaker 17little bit put off since the barrier but I do think the horse is worth considering and I do think it's going to be based on his parade. I've heard he has been a bit of a naughty boy in the past but I think if he parades well, he's certainly worth looking at in terms of a bet. Trust your instincts. I like Middle Earth and I think the stable have been, you know, particularly Kieran just kept pushing the horse and Solar Spain is the one that I'm actually going to back each way that I think is worth a little bit of value.
Speaker 1A lot of good judges are tipping him at a price as well so you've nailed it again, Jane. It is a great race and you know what? There's so much unknown to the Melbourne Cup. You get 101 chances to win. They've got to handle the occasion, these horses. They're going to need some luck. Who knows what the weather will do but we keep on trying to back the winner and it's probably the most difficult race to try and do that but it's our great race. Great race in New Zealand as well so bring it on. You're a bloody star, Jane. We appreciate your time as always and good luck. Hopefully you get that first.
Speaker 17Yeah, good luck to you too. I hope it all goes well.
Speaker 1Thank you, Jane. This is Jane Ivor. What a star she is. Paulie Sebastianis, we wrap it all up of course on this Monday. We need before that the annoyingly good performance of the week. National tiles, annoyingly good products, prices and service. It has to go to, it's a tough one. I'll tell you who gets it. Who? Doesn't get a lot of love on Giddy Up. Well, he does but David Taggart did very, very well. He was sensational. He would get love if he'd come on the show, he's too lazy. What about the simply sensational performance of the week?
Speaker 15Yep, Blake gets that one onto you, Blake. His simply sensational moment. Gator's best in Melbourne, green tick. Gator's best in Sydney, green tick. Gator's parlay, green tick. Gator is simply sensational.
Speaker 1Beautiful. Paulie, we've got the Calcutta tonight at the Rising Sun Hotel. Well, it's the Melbourne Cup event at the Rising Sun Hotel. Looking forward to the call of the card. Bring on the Melbourne Cup. Tomorrow morning, we'll have a Giddy Up stable mail. Indeed. In the first hour, then Mark Hunter with the Hunter's Edge from nine to 10. And then we'll have a big bag of tips as we go right across Australasia, trying to find you some winners on Melbourne Cup Day. Thank you, Paul. Thank you. Thanks for your company on this Melbourne Cup Eve. Enjoy the next 24 hours and I'll catch you again on Cup Day from eight o'clock.
