The first Donnie football Friday of the year, we're out here at Bowser Chevy and Monroeville covering a lot of ground. All hell is broken loose in college football. In general, we see players coming back from the NFL or at least from NFL rosters, possibly to LSU. We'll talk about that in a minute. The North Carolina football program is absolutely blowing up with some of the latest allegations. Lots of stuff going on, but for our purposes, let's talk a little pit, Donnie. And let's talk about how many wins we see. I mean, it's one of the safest bets in all of sports, really, that pit's going to be right around eight wins or so. I see a little bit of a higher ceiling this year because they have a star quarterback. It's really just as simple as that. And if some of the weapons around him come through, and if his offensive line gives him adequate time, I think Mason Hunchel is a star. I really do. And I think pit could crawl up to 10 wins if he fulfills his potential this year. I really do believe that. Now, will it happen? Probably not. So I'm going to come in at nine. Believe it or not, I'm going to come in at nine wins for pit. So I have them. I'm looking at eight right now for me. And I agree. And it was why I brought up that question to Pat Bostic, because with how we have to go about things in the transfer portal and NIL era of college football, it is pretty rare that a program like pit that we know is not that upper echelon program of college football that could take over and have all the control. They are able to bring back a quarterback that showed a ton of potential last year. And didn't even play a full season as a true freshman. So I do think that Mason Hunchel has the ability to get this team, you know, a lot better than where they are preseason in the ACC. They were projected to be the ninth ranked team. I think they'll be better than that. I don't know if we're talking ACC championship game or anything. But I think losses maybe at Virginia Tech because that's the first road game they have to play. It's a prime time game. That'll be fun because it's Narduzzi versus Franklin. Yeah. Well, in that, you know, just coaching rivalry that they they have. But I think they have the first four games that are extremely winnable. Then you have teams like Boston College. They should take care of. I think Georgia Tech. They should they could start seven and oh, which they did a couple of years ago. And then it all fell flat. Right. Yeah. I mean, we were genuinely talking about college football playoff. And then it went just down a cliff. But it comes down to maybe if they can steal one against Virginia Tech against Miami, who is going to be in the top 10, probably all season. Louisville, who is ranked. How do things go against Florida State? That's another prime time game. It's a Friday night game in November. And I think UCF just put up 70 on somebody. Didn't they? So that's second. Bethune Cookman. I mean, if whenever when you're putting up 70 on Bethune Cookman, baby, look out. Ron Cookman. Miami's not going to be easy either. Miami, Ohio, in the opener, by the way. They got to respect the Mac here. Got two. Look what the Mac's done. But yeah, I think I think eight or nine wins is pretty fair. I don't see them being worse than that. And it is because I have that much belief in the quarterback to at least get them there. Yeah. I'm going to go nine and three for Pitt against my better judgment. But like I said earlier, whenever Pitt has had a really good season, it's no coincidence that they always have a really good quarterback. The last time they the last two times they want a conference, it was with Kenny Pickett's Heisman year. And Tyler Palko being one of the best quarterbacks in college football that year under Walt Harris. When they went to the festival and played Alex Smith in Utah, it's just if you have that guy, same thing goes at every level of footballs we're seeing with the pro football team here. If you have that guy, you always have a chance. And man, even though Heinzschel, like like a Fostick said, he was drinking out of a fire hose last year. I like that saying, didn't you, Donnie? I did. When he ran into good teams, it was it was too much. But he was spectacular last year. Listen to this. It had been 30 seasons since an ACC true freshman quarterback through for 400 yards and three touchdowns in a game before he did it against NC State. 30 years. What were you going to say? I was going to say something they have to avoid. And we've seen pit do this a thousand times in the past. You can't have one of those pit game where they drop one. Can't be pitting to UCF or something who did just up 70 or God forbid the game tomorrow. Or I don't know a week team on your schedule like Boston College or howl. Even though those are road games, you can't drop those. They do manage and Pat and Arduzzi has been especially good at this. They do manage to have those games where they, you know, they just lay an egg completely against the bad team. But they still have games where they are game against some top-tier opponents. Absolutely. Miami and Notre Dame whooped on them last year. They're famous for that. They're famous for, you know, snatching defeat from the jaws of victory against the likes of UCF and then beating Miami or somebody. So I wouldn't be surprised. Limits, you got a win total for pit. Yeah, I'm thinking eight and four, Joe. I'm concerned with just the latter portion of their schedule, especially smack dab right in the middle right around Howell Wien. It's that stretch at Miami on October 24th. And then Virginia, and then Georgia Tech at home on October 31st. I don't think they win the Virginia Tech game. I'm concerned about the Louisville game on the road. Louisville beat them last year. And I think that's just a good team. And pit is struggled the last couple of years of finishing strong. You know, they, they were hot going into that Notre Dame game, college game days here. Then Notre Dame just crushed them and that derailed the whole rest of the season. So I'm fearful that something similar is going to happen for pit this year. There's always that fear. Penn State, you gave us the nice briefing on Penn State. Donnie, I'm very curious to see what happens here. Mostly the reaction, like, like, first, let's establish this. Is the bar for Matt Campbell to better James Franklin right away? I don't think that's totally unfair. I mean, you just got rid of it. When you, when you get rid of a guy who was a bounce away from playing for the national championship two years ago, when you get rid of that guy, there's no honeymoon period for the new guy in my opinion. I don't care where he's coming from. Iowa State and his team's built on Iowa State transfers. He's got a bunch of those. Man, when you get rid of a guy like that, there's only one, there's only one place to go. And that's win one or two more games and a national title or bust practically. Is that unfair in year one? No, I don't think so. I think especially with how these schedule lays out for them where they avoid Oregon, where they avoid Ohio State. I think that really benefits because we know that those were two of the teams Ohio State, especially because they've always been together in the big 10 that James Franklin lost to all but once he had that one upset win over Ohio State pretty early in his tenure. Otherwise, he lost to him every time they avoid that this year. Cam will get to avoid that right off the bat. So I think that even adds to. where Penn State fans are thinking, okay, they have to be at least a 10 win squad because this is pretty much a cake walk of a schedule other than a couple of weeks here and there. Limits, you're the guy here. You're a Penn State fan. They were within a Drew Aller completion, maybe, or three away from the national title game a couple of years ago. They got rid of that guy. How much of a, how much of a honeymoon are you giving the new guy? And yeah, not, not that much. Not that much. Like if he comes out and loses the Whiteout game, people are going to get frustrated. That game against USC or if they lose the playoffs and it's because of their own doing and not just other teams being clearly better than them, I think people are going to start to get a pretty upset and anxious because they don't make the playoff. It's a miserable failure. We all agree on that. I agree, yeah, because look, they're redoing the stadium and they've upped everybody's season tickets by like 50% and people are already ticked off of an irritated about that. So that's already something that's messing with the minds of a lot of people. They bring in a completely new roster and you don't, I mean, you don't even know half the roster, even if you're like a die hard fan, it's hard to be able to come to comprehend a lot of the players that are on this team right now. So yes, I would agree if they don't make it, it's a failure. And especially just because there's no Ohio State, there's no organ. There are veterans all over the field that have played high level football before, they just haven't done it together. I'm fascinated by this quarterback. I really am. I didn't know a lot about him, Rocco Beck. This guy, Anthony Beck's kid, yeah. This guy has made 39 career starts the most by an FBS quarterback. He's the most experienced quarterback in the country. That's surprising considering how long they allow kids to play. I know. There's going to be a college kid at one point who has more stars than Aaron Rogers. Right. I mean, that's crazy. All right. West Virginia. I don't see this going very well. I think they have some big time offensive weaponry. I do. But in the end, I don't think that Rich Rod has the horses yet. And I'm going to go six and six, Donnie. Well, so officially I was at 10 on Penn State. I don't know if I ever gave an answer, but I'm at nine and three on Penn State. I think I think West Virginia can reach ball eligibility. Adam said if everything goes well, they end up eight and four. He had him at seven and five. You say six and six. I mean, I hate to sound repetitive, but I feel like that's about where they are to me. Yeah. Last year, I feel like I was low on them last year. They ended up being a pretty bad team, although they did beat pit early in the year or else they would have been like three and nine. I think there are a couple of wins better now that Rich Rod is more than a year into his reunion. So all three big local squads become bowl eligible. I wonder if Penn State misses out on the playoff. If there is somehow a pit team that maybe wins nine games, do we get a bowl matchup between the two? I always write with that. I have no idea what the bowl combinations are at this point either with the conferences. Limits, what do you got for the fighting, Crowley? I have six and six as well, guys. I think last year, I had them at five and seven. They ended up winning right around there. They will make a bowl, but Rich Rod has to take a big step. They invested a lot more money into that program. Matt Sigg, the fourth cherry star is, I believe, going to start in their secondary. So I'm intrigued to see how he performs. And they get some stability at quarterback. I just don't feel great about the state of their program right now. And I mean, Rich Rod winning seven or eight games can definitely improve that. I just don't see it. All right. Let's roll through some predictions for college football. Welcome aboard. It's the initial Donnie football Friday here on the fan. Donnie, who's going to play in the national championship and who's going to win? I am going to pick Texas as my national champion. And I will have them beating the Ohio State Buckeyes, Joe, with Julian saying, not going on too much of a limb there. I'm going to say that Notre Dame gets there this year under Marcus Freeman and it's Notre Dame and Georgia in the national championship. And I'm saying Notre Dame wins it, Wonder Twin. I think the run for the big 10 is going to continue, guys. I think that this year, though, it's not archmaning, but Dante Moore, who has a season for the ages, guides the Oregon ducks to the national championship. They beat John Mateer and Oklahoma. Wow. All right. That leads to another question. And these these final two questions could be one and the same. Who's going to be the top quarterback prospect going into the next year's draft if there's going to be a clear cut guy emerge? Who's it going to be? Arch. I think it'll be archmaning. There may be guys that put together better seasons. You know, I thought I think Austin named a really good one with Dante Moore still thinking back to what he did against Penn State in that game last year really impressed me going into hostile environment, happy valley, white out game, and he didn't let it phase and whatsoever. So there's going to be quarterbacks that maybe have more eye-popping numbers. But when it's all said and done, I think arch will be viewed as QB1 in the next draft. I agree with that. I think at 64, 222, and he started to come on last year in a big way. And the bloodlines, which people value, I just think he's going to he's going to emerge as the guy, however, for the Heisman. I'm taking CJ Carr. I just said Notre Dame. I think it's going to win the national title. I know they vote on it before that. But I think with their schedule, they have a chance to go unbeaten. I think Moore is going to play an incredible year. But a lot of his best play is going to come in the playoffs, kind of like how Will Howard had. It'll be an arch-manning regular season, especially being in the SEC's, in the SEC. The SEC bias a little bit will take over for the Heisman voting. I didn't name my Heisman winner. I said arch would be, you be one. I think that Texas is going to win the national championship. I don't think the Heisman winner will be a QB. I think it's going to be Jeremiah Smith, who should probably be the number one overall pick, will be because he's not a QB, but he's about as close as you could get to being a Kishon Johnson and being the first overall pick in the draft. The guy I'm rooting for is Trinidad Jamblis. He's my favorite quarterback in college, excuse me, college football, and I hope the Steelers draft him. I love that guy. He had fun to watch. Yeah. He had some exciting games with Ole Miss last year, especially in the playoffs. Did you say arch was going to win the Heisman? Now I can't remember. Yes, I did. That arch would win the Heisman. I think Dante Moore will be the better player back. But yeah, I think him being a Texas bigger brand, bigger program, being in the SEC, I think they'll end up being the winners of the SEC this year in the SEC championship game, and that'll ultimately what puts, the regular season before the SEC championship game will be what puts arch over the top. How about little Sam Levin at LSU and then NFL roster around him? Yeah, he's definitely going to have true NFL wide receivers to throw to, like Will Howard has on his team. He's going to be understaffed to Martin Harris and he'll have actual NFL players on that team. He's going to be handing off to Jonathan Turner. They're going to be unbelievable by the end of the year, Miles Garrett on defense. I can't wait to watch them. All right, Limits. Did you hear who's coming back to call their offense? Arty Smith. Arty Smith. That's right. The tight end end around. They're going to have in their offense now for Lane Kiffin. Now, he's an Arty Smiths at Ohio State. I know. I think Limits was kidding. I got the number one, that's how many times I received this email from Miami saying, "Please use Miami, Miami University, or Miami, Ohio. Please do not use Miami of Ohio or University of Miami, et cetera. The latter are not the proper names for our institution. Wait, can you run through that again? No, it's too long. So what you're saying is look out and respect the Mac. I got one more, Donnie, seven that, of course, his big Ben's retired number there. And then I got a question for you in limits. Well, there's my number, Joe, and I told you I was going here last night. It could be 12 to 15, depending on who you ask, miles from the coastal Carolina campus to the Atlantic Ocean. That is a great one. 24. It's only the 24th football season for coastal Carolina. Want me to keep going, Donnie? Just give me the word. I'm all primed to you. I want to get, I want to get more on coastal here in front of me. Five. That was Pat White's number. It's going to be retired before the game and I'll give you an accompanying number, 4,480. That was rushing yards for Pat White. He finished his career as the all time rushing quarterback in, in division one history. I couldn't believe that what Crowley said about the college football Hall of Fame. Yeah, they need to be a first team all-american to get in. Let's do put his rule I ever heard. First with what is going on right now with Luke Weaver, Jose Negrone wrote a really good story in DK Pittsburgh sports today. He talked to Luke Weaver, who over the last month has been dealing with a severe case of poison ivy. Wow. Weaver said I've had my own set of personal challenges over the last month. And I've kept them to myself. But at the end of the day, I've had almost a month worth of severe poison ivy to the point where I've just been in hives over my entire lower body. I got it in Miami three weeks ago. So shortly after getting here, brushed up against a bush in my body. It went into a really bad state. I've been fighting my own personal battle with sleep. I haven't slept in about a month. I wake up a lot, but that's my own deal. I'm trying to find ways every single day. That would have been real low on my guesses of what's wrong with Luke Weaver. When you make it this time, I mean, I guess I haven't had poison ivy in quite some time. I mean, if you haven't had enough, it's it's very life altering while you have it. Yeah, because you're itching all over the place. Like he said, wait, wait, he already had it in Miami. And then he brushed up against a bush. No, he acquired it in Miami. Like when the pirates were in Miami a couple of weeks ago. Oh, okay. That's when he that's when he got it. And it's been lingering for weeks. I mean, people can acquire a lot of things in Miami, Joe. I'm not thinking poison ivy. I'm trying to think about this limits is this it's it doesn't sound like he's making excuses. It just sounds like something that happened in his life. I mean, they avoidments for this. Do they not? I mean, they do, but it seems like every remedy or every thing that he's basically tried to do to erase this and to eradicate it is not worked. Well, I know this much. He better get it working soon because he's been god awful. Poor dream Weaver. He can't sleep through the night. He can't get through the ninth or sleep through the night. He can't make it through the night. That's right. Now, honestly, though, if you've had poison ivy and I've never had it, but I've seen people who have you're basically rendered like inoperable for a few days. I'm also surprised that that isn't something that the the team maybe just comes out and I don't I don't know if that you put the guy in the IL or like there's there's nothing. And parentheses poison ivy. I don't know. I mean, you can make up how many reasons to put a guy in. It'll be one of the oddest reasons I've ever seen right up their limits with Chris Snyder and his broken testicle, right? Yes, you will bring in that story back up. The but the oddest injury you could think of. Well, who was somebody that, I think it was a pirate, was it like Clint Barmus or somebody who was like throwing out trash and separated his shoulder? Yes. Remember, who was it that was? Tears meet. That's right. It was deer. Yeah. Who was injured trying to get out of a hot tub in Arizona once? Did you ever hear that story? No. I remember Bill Wong. He even in the former penguin fell through the glass door of his shower. Supposedly. That was the story. And his whole body was marked up. Anyway, thank you. Limits. I hope that dream weaver gets the ointment he needs. Yeah. Man, I do too. The pirates last night inducted Jack Wilson, John Candle area in Wilbur Cooper into their 2026 Hall of Fame class. Joe, what do you remember about when you and Ron covered Wilbur Cooper in 1926 together? Oh, man. I do remember Wilbur was a good interview. Hey, he's the, he's the all-time leader in wins, I think, for the pirates. I've had some interesting interactions with John Candle area over the years. I can tell you that. And Jack Wilson was a great fielder. I remember he used the same glove, seemingly his whole career. It looked like his little league glove. And there was like no padding from the leather to his, it was unbelievable. And he was a really good player. But the candy man, you know, they say, be careful, you never want to meet your heroes. Now I know why, but he was a great pitcher, not arguing that. He was a great pitcher. You didn't like him. You didn't get along with John Candle area. Well, we had a little bit of a problem one time. A problem. But that's not important. No. It seems important. Yeah, it does. What happened? You're your childhood hero. It's ruined. It's ruined for you. I can't say the story because then he'll get mad again. Plus, I don't want to distract from the Hall of Honor weekend. It was a minor deal. I think in Wilson's case, though, I mean, it might be biased and it's probably because I watched the guy as a kid on so many bad pirate teams. Otherwise, yeah, I mean, he's got to be one of the best fielders in the game's history to never win a gold glove got to be. And a couple of years there, didn't he have 200 hits one year? I know he was a silver slugger and he has said because we've had him on the show before in the afternoon that he said the silver slugger year, he was disappointed because that was his worst offensive year. Hmm. Interesting. But man, I mean, that guy was smooth as silk. Yeah. I mean, you want to talk about never having to worry about a ball getting hit to short. I mean, now every single time there's a ground ball, we're like in fear that the guy can do something an eight year old can do. I mean, my God, if Nick Gonzalez is in front of it, it's basically a base hit when they hit it. Somebody like Wilson could probably get the job done without a glove. Although Gonzalez made three great plays in one inning the other night at third base. Did you see that? It was phenomenal. He's going to keep that one in the archives. That's going in the highlight reel. Next. All right, Joe. So there have been significant changes made by the Profitball Hall of Fame to their selection process that has just been announced. Yeah. So the selection committee has been reduced from 50 to 28. Modern era players and seniors will no longer be separate categories. So all eligible players will now be considered in one poll after their five year mandatory requirement period that you have to wait. The annual final group changes from 15 modern era players, three seniors, one coach, one contributor, blah, blah, to 13 players down from 15, one coach, one contributor. This all comes after Bill Bella check was snubbed. Well, what is the first year of eligibility? I can't wrap my brain around that. What's the upshot of it? What does it mean? Well, I figured that you would, you know, brush away all the details and just look for the silver lining here. So candidates who receive, candidates who reach the final seven will no longer automatically carry over as finalists as well. It basically just broadens, it basically shortens actually. I think the amount of people that are being considered on a given basis, obviously from the three seniors, one coach on the one coach and one contributor. And it overholes the selection process where it allows for Bill Bella check basically to go in immediately. And they're not to be. Go ahead, Donnie. I was going to say my question just from all of that was going to be, so how many guys now get in like regardless of senior status, contributor, coach, how many names will we have that get into the Hall of Fame this time next year because as we all know, there is a big one in Pittsburgh that's going to be on the docket. Right. And Bella check has to get in. I'm sorry, even if his son did give drugs to a North Carolina player, he's got to get in the pro football of fame. For sure.
