(upbeat music) - Welcome back to Creepcast. - Today we're having done a little creep TV in a while, so we're doing the creep TV on a series, Isaiah wanted to show me called Gemini Home Entertainment. - Right, there's a just Gemini. - Right. - There's a Gemini home. - A lot of people call it Gemini, but the full name is Gemini Home Entertainment. So, as a lot of you guys probably know, the back rooms, my boy Kane knocked it out of the park. I'm sure a bunch of you have seen it at this point. I've blown away by how successful it is, very happy for the dude. But watching his stuff, I would never give him that satisfaction again. I gave it to him one time, so why would I, you know, blood happy second time? - Well, I thought it was interesting. We watched, we both watched the movie, and it was a thing where we were like, no, we could do a creep TV, but then we were kind of tell you about some of the older, not that, not that I would say, back rooms is like analog horror, but it's like a found footage, kind of like the lost media vibe, and then we just made us talk about gray lock a little bit, and then inevitably we were talking about local 58, and then you were like, actually I think Gemini would be a fun thing to watch. Just do something that's like in the same spirit, we just got done watching this, so we're kind of in, we've been talking about it a lot, so I think there'd be a fun thing to chat about today. - Yeah, and also like Hunters fun to show this stuff, because he's like completely unfamiliar with all the stuff I grew up with, and I'm like intimately familiar. So one of the coolest things about creep cast is, 'cause I can show Hunters all these stories that I've known for years, and it's his, I get to see someone experience it for the first time, which is always funny. Seeing that the first upload was on, I mean, in 2020, it's crazy that just, these stuff was coming out the same time that like we were starting our channels too, and I just, it's just like revisiting a shooting star, where it's like, oh, I just totally missed that when it passed by the first time. - Yeah. - Which also I'm literate when it comes to all these like little online horror stuff, so I just, yeah. It's so new to me. - It's just 'cause like, your content was so, like, its own thing. You were following rabbit holes that I'd never heard of. But like, this area, this was my jam. Like, the first videos on my channel are me talking about series like this. I think the first upload, whenever I decided I wanted to take YouTube seriously, was a local 58 analysis. I remember editing that YouTube video, where I set in a dingy room, as I say, dingy, in a small room in my parents' house, like up against the corner, and I just had a candle, and I just lit it with that and filmed on my iPhone, and talked into a blue Yeti mic that was plugged into a computer into my laptop. And I remember editing that when I was supposed to be studying for a test in the library at my college, and I was staying at the library till like 9 p.m., because I knew that the library had better Wi-Fi than I did at home, so I could upload quicker. And I remember skipping class, spending the whole day editing on my laptop in the library, uploading. And I remember like, after an hour, it had 50 views, and I was like, wow. - How cool, how cool? - 50 people. - One exciting video. - It's always such an exciting thing when you first start going. You're just like, 50 people somewhere, it's all this. It's almost more, it's, yeah, it's at the beginning stages. It really is like the most magical time. I mean, like, it's all so new. And like as like people click on videos, and as people are watching, you think about each, and I still think about each individual, but you know, with time, you just get numb to anything. So I think about then, I remember there were a couple of comments that were like, oh, this is good to, you know, oh, just found this channel. And being like, wow, they just found my channel. So I've been very intimately familiar with all this stuff, and all the creators of it for a long time. So, but Hunter doesn't know any of this stuff. So initially, I was like, let's do local 58. But honestly, and I love local 58, Chris Straub, you know, the goat, Candle Cove, we've covered here, love this stuff. But if you ask me, the best rendition of the local broadcasting network, small town, info-marshall thing is Jim and I home entertainment. I think it just takes the formula, and does it a little bit better? I think some of the scares are more effective. I think Remia Bode really knocked the series out of the park. And when I covered Jim and I on the YouTube channel, it was a few uploads ago. So there's going to be some stuff in here that I haven't talked about publicly before. So it's good for me to cover. And it's also nostalgic, because like, this is one of the earliest videos I did on my channel, covering Jim and I home entertainment. And it's got over 5 million views now. We did urban spooky, remember. Well, yeah, urban spooky. And then we did, we did the Angelica, Midwest Angelica. Midwest Angelica. Yeah, we did. I don't know, that's really about it. Hold on. Nah, I feel like there's a couple where we're getting right now, hold on. Did that urban spooky? We did, we have a playlist for it, wasn't that convenient? User name 666, one where we looked at, the scary Japanese channel. Love them, yeah. No, okay, that is it. That was the only one missing. Why don't we, we haven't done, we haven't done creep TV a lot, but I was just say, gray lock is, is, is gray lock a good analog horror kind of thing? Yes, yeah, absolutely, very similar format. So it's, so let me ask you this then, because I know that there's also things that we haven't covered, like, what is the other one? There's like another big analog horror one that was really big during this time. Mint Mandela catalog. Mandela catalog? Yeah, there's that was, was the pandemic just the time to do this kind of, like is it still alive and strong today, or was it just like kind of a flash in the pan? So, what I think it was, so, analog horror really kicked off, and there's some earlier, like, one off instances, but local 58 was really what started turning the gears for a lot of people. And Chris Straub, a bunch of his stuff is based in, like, small town, TV, network, showing suspicious things. Like, he did candle coat, right? Like the kids watched the TV show. And they think it's, they think they're watching a kids show, but they're actually just looking at static. So a lot of cool stuff was already kind of in that realm. Yeah. So then when he does local 58, that's about, like, this broadcasting network that actually some eldritch entity is manipulating the stuff that's happening. That kind of turned, turned to switch in a lot of people's heads to be like, oh, this is creepy. I can do something with it that everyone started doing, like, these infomercial style things where some entity wants you to know that there's something, like, something's coming, something's going to get you whatever. So there's, like, Jim and I, Mandela catalog started there with its first couple of entries, but then it kind of became its own, like, mixed media horror project. The back room's cane stuff was its own thing. That guy, I feel like he was made in a lab somewhere to just build whatever he's building now. So that you can see the only real connection between that two analog core is like the literal analog camera format, but it's found footage more than it is this stuff. Yeah, it's definitely a phone. I was going to say, but I think that it's interesting. It's just kind of like how it's just how the fucking plan it's aligned, man, where it's like, I'd be curious to see, I mean, like, don't know wrong. I think it would still be big, but I think because this, like, analog craze was so big and popular with people, I think it was easier for people to also to latch onto the back room's thing, like, oh, this is a fun iteration of this other thing that I like, you know? It's just like, it's the perfect storm of like mixing all this other shit that you're doing. So just really interesting, I mean, there's just insane, you know, like, I mean, fully rendering stuff and blender and stuff versus a lot of this stuff, no shade to any of the other analog stuff, but it is very simple and, you know, it's very approachable and how people make it. That's why I think like the benefit to a lot of it was, like Alex Kister made the first Mandela catalog video from his phone, like he just got on a phone editor and like put the stuff together. I think it's awesome to make it work. And then later on he, you know, used the platform to do more stuff, but the fact that it was that approachable to a lot of people is what I think kicked off a lot of people's ideas around the genre. And then from there, people started to make it more complicated. Like, there's some stuff I'll talk about in Gemini today where they kind of broke the mold, but you are right that in COVID, everyone's locked up. [BLANK_AUDIO] and like local 58 and stuff like that starts going around to where so many people are like, now it's the perfect time for me to learn how to make this. - Yeah. - Which I feel like a lot of us were kind of doing, right? We're just stuck inside. I mean, that's when I started YouTube, right? - Yeah, I mean, I think I was on, I think like COVID, my channel had just blown up. Or like has like had been going to where I could do it full time or whatever. So it was, it was definitely just everybody's at home wanting to watch shit and just like make stuff and do whatever. So it was just, yeah, it was a blow. I really, and I'm not, I have to clarify, I'm not saying it's worth it. Not saying it was a good trade because people died. Not saying that. However, I do not think I would be where I am now if it wasn't for the lockdown. - Oh yeah. - Yeah. - Because everyone's stuck inside like all the channels used blue up and stuff like that. - Yeah. - No, that's a good thing. No, that's a good thing. - I'm gonna let it go. - I'm not gonna let it go. - Yeah. - Yeah. I'm just saying it. - I've seen people say that they wanted it. One of those good with the bad kind of scenario. - What's weird is I feel like people aren't romanticizing that time now too to where it's like, I've been seeing a lot of like online discussions being like, man, what I wouldn't fucking give just to have another pandemic to where I could just like be inside or whatever. It's very interesting how people perceive that stuff or that time. And also it's crazy to think that it's been like five years now since it's like been done. Since the lockdown's been done or whatever. - Yeah. - It feels like it was forever. - About twenty-two-one. - Whatever. - Or is it twenty-two-one? - That's when like it was totally taken off. A lot of places were kind of relaxing end of 2020, early 2021 kind of area. 'Cause it started, they outbreak started end of 2019. And it was like the beginning of 2020 when like the nationwide lockdowns really started up. - Yeah. - 'Cause there was a few months of kind of like, "Ha ha, what's going on?" - It was such a fucking blast. - Such a blur at the whole time period. All right, well, I mean, without further ado, let's just jump into it. Let me tell you this. So you actually, you enjoy this. I know whenever we did, we've talked about some things that people love. Some people are like, eh, I don't know. Is this something that is like a pretty universally loved thing or does it have its detractors as well? - I mean, there's people who are the other reason I say that is just because I feel like when we covered Urban Spook, there was a lot of people who were just like, "Don't cover that." - I don't know. - So I don't know. - Yeah, I hear you, I hear you. So Urban Spook was that way because of like, people took issue with a lot of the subject matter, like the stuff involving kids and. - Urban Spook redacted baby. - Yeah, redacted baby. - One of my favorite things ever is redacted baby. A lot of stuff like that, right? Urban Spook was super like exploitative and the creator knew what he was doing with it. He would make tweets all the time. He's like, "Yeah, this is supposed to be like watching "a mortal combat fatality." It's like over the top for a reason. So there are a bunch of people at issue with it. I don't know anyone who likes analogue horror who has a problem with Jim and I. - All right. - Like it's pretty, it's one of the standards in the genre. - I just didn't know if I was when I'm walking myself into, which I don't want to spoil too much. I just didn't know if it's gonna be a thing once again where we have redacted baby or we have. - No, this, I know. - I'm a man in poop pipe or something. - I'll put it, I'll put it this way. When you watch this, I think it will kind of explain a lot of the hype that we had for it. - Okay. - So, for the whole genre. - All right. Well, what's the first, what's the first century called? - The first one's world's weirdest animals. But before we do that, you said there was, you were saying you saw this girl right before we started recording and then you wanted to tell the story in the recording. - What was the context around what we were talking about before I'm trying to. - We were talking about the things you're making. That's right. The, I saw this girl online. I was just gonna say, it was like probably one of the most well done tattoos I've seen, but it was Smile Dog. It's like one of the best Smile Dog tattoos I've ever seen. I meant to send it to you, but it is fucking incredible. Yeah, the two first birds were both kind of paralleling what the monster does. Yes, yeah. Yeah. But yeah, this is what I'm sure it'll say, but in these things, I'm always- Whenever I watch these, I'm always just like, why the fuck are you schoolin' around? First off, you're in Minnesota. So that one wasn't as good as that, but I still kind of lost also, it's a fun little thing of doing like storm safety tips, but it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a storm you don't expect. That's, that's fun. Yeah. It's more like a swarm. Yeah. It's more like a ton of these things taken over your home and stuff like that. Again, like within the analog core, which these first few are definitely standardized, you'll see, like I said, it breaks them old as we go on, but a lot of them are based around the idea that there's a local broadcasting network that's either been taken over by something or people within the network are trying to warn people about what's coming. Um, what's the most kind of like you get your storytelling off of just that? What's the most absurd thing that can still be scary? Like on paper, it seems ridiculous, but it would still be very frightening in one of these series. Yeah, I mean, on paper, absolutely ridiculous. You hear it and you're like, what? But then if you saw it practically, like actually, that is, that's horrifying. What would it be? Actually, I think probably an example of something that sounds goofy in concept, but it's actually pretty freaky is the Walton files. Do you know about it? No. So the Walton files. Hold on. I'll pull this up for reference real quick. The Walton files, I mean, it's clearly based off five nights at Freddy's, right? Okay. Like the idea around it is like animatronics, like in an old, um, where's an example? Like most of the early parts of it look like this where it's like, it's like just hand drawn, like, you know, it's, it's very five nights at Freddy's, like, oh, these animatronics kill people and stuff like that. But the way Martin Walsh draws some of these scenes is actually the way Martin Walsh draws these characters a lot of the times like this, like very goofy children's animation, and the whole concepts around like these abandoned animatronics kill people and you're like, yeah, I mean, it's like, you know, how scary could it be, right? Kind of thing. But every now and then, I'll be watching this thing. There will be, so sometimes like in some creepy segments, you'll get, where's that one of Bond looking around, we'll get stuff like this. It's like, well, that's a little, like the human teeth feature and stuff like that. It's like, that's a little unsettling. But then he'll do, he'll do art randomly, or it's like, there's a one where it kills them where, yeah, they'll be walking around with flashlights and it's like, well, that's a bit more. This is a bit more menacing than a kid's cartoon, like the face standing there and stuff like that. But then you'll do these, these little like mixed action things, like there's one where it'll be shots like this. And then this is the example I think of, but there's one where it's like human eyes and they're looking around. Then it'll hard cut to like someone getting killed. You see the dots of the eyes and then it comes on and it kills them and it'll show like to describe someone's face getting contorted inside of it. It just shows like a 3D glimpse of like the face being shoved up into the mask and stuff like that. I think that's a series that like the parts of it sound goofy and practice, but they work together when they're played out together. And also the story of Walt Files is interesting between like what, start them and all that stuff. So that's, that's an example. So what would you think? What would you think's the goofiest thing that could still work? I don't know. I was thinking like what, like thinking of like the like these shapeshifting people or whatever here. You know, I was trying to think of like an alien species that like steals our nipples, but doesn't realize that we have formula. Like whenever these things are so ambiguous in large scale Do you think that it do you think it tends to have the creators kind of Box themselves in a bit creatively And then just like or does it also just lend it to be like well. I just kind of want to do other shit and then it kind of leaves these These projects open ended or do you think that it is just a thing that like it's intentional amounts of time that are passing through or like You know, you know, I think a lot of it is one. Yeah, I think a lot of it is wanting to branch into other stuff because he had done Gemini for years a long time then it's a two or three year project Yeah, yeah, he just kept like adding and building on to the world And I think he said most of what he wanted to say because with all the pieces we have now You can kind of see the timeline in your head and think about how these things came to be And I can certainly sympathize with the creator wanting to move on to other stuff because right around the time Gemini started to get spaced out. He started this channel where he was doing like more individual projects There's still very similar, but instead of like informational. It's like home video scary stuff, right? Yeah This kind of thing. I love that just to kid it a birthday party with the face ordered out for some reason But yeah, no, I just it seems like these like big scope scale things. It's like really hard to wrap it Which is what I've been finding even with stuff like skittama rink or like these things where it's like creepy Like just kind of ambiguous ideas It's not that they can't lead anywhere, but I do think that like I think it makes it harder to close a project out or I think like you also get like kind of you get Boxed into a certain kind of creative Parameter you have to stay in you know, I mean Yeah, so I can certainly sympathize with him over wanting to yeah, I mean I feel that it's still really fun other stuff It's cool seeing this too because it's it's like I mean this is the first time I've ever seen any of this stuff And I think like It's interesting how similar This is like it feels like this when people look at like horror content in the future. It's like It's just such a specific place and time for this kind of thing And it's always interesting that like found footage always kind of comes back in its own variety in ways, but I'm it's interesting to see how like stuff is evolved since then and like what will be the next kind of thing that like the youth catches on to and that people find That kind of like hooks them in a way to that's an approachable method To making stuff. Yeah, I think too like and as analog core goes on It's getting more and more abstractly got got you've got guys like this like doctor nowhere who a lot of their stuff is really weird, strange visuals and drawings, and so I mean, you can see looking at this. I feel like a lot of these people are inspired by weird things. Definitely like David Lynch and that kind of stuff. I look at that stuff like the thing that you just hovered over, that just feels like David Firth a lot too. Yes, it's very David Firth. There's this one he did, the boiled one phenomenon that's the most popular where it's like this, this guy shows up in your dreams and speaks to you. I mean, there's so many different iterations that this stuff's falling into. I mean, there's just a ton of very creative people online who like make some really unique things and it's interesting now with like the backroom we talked about earlier. Hollywood is starting to catch on to it and be like, oh man, there's a lot of money in these things, ain't they? Yeah. Well, I think we'll find two is I think, I think more, more Hollywood's just going to become more, more obsolete and these people are going to be able to like just fully do like a larger scale stuff on their own. There's, I mean, there's so much like I said, this is like my wheelhouse like creepy stuff, you know, so I'm always happy to take a walk down memory lane. And I know I understand like, you know, the format of creep cast on people prefer to listen to these things totally get that. But it's also just fun to, you know, watch some really cool horror series, you know. Yeah.
