Garrett Crochet to the IL! Buy, Sell or Hold? (4/30 Fantasy Baseball Podcast)
76m 35s
The podcast discusses key fantasy baseball news, starting with Garrett Crochet’s IL placement due to shoulder inflammation. While the Red Sox frame it as cautionary, the hosts note that shoulder issues often have uncertain recovery timelines, and Crochet’s struggles this season may stem from this problem. This injury opens rotation spots for pitchers like Kade Cavalli, who has impressed with consecutive double-digit strikeout games and is widely available (28% rostered). Despite his limited arsenal, his upcoming starts against the Twins and Marlins make him a worthwhile add. Meanwhile, Nolan Arenado’s recent power surge is highlighted, but his poor underlying metrics (low exit velocity, below-average barrel rate) suggest his hot streak is unsustainable, making him a risky pickup despite weak third base options. Other updates include Trevor Rogers going on the IL with an illness after poor outings, Spencer Strider’s anticipated debut against the Rockies (caution advised due to Coors Field), and Garrett Cole’s rehab starts showing reduced velocity. Vinnie Pasquantino is dealing with back tightness but avoiding the IL. The hosts advise streaming Cavalli and exercising patience with Crochet, while recommending against overinvesting in Arenado’s hot streak.
Welcome to the fantasy baseball today podcast from CBS Sports Got a fantasy question email fantasy baseball at CBSi.com Get ready to win your league Now here's Frank Scott and Chris hello and welcome in to fantasy baseball today on Thursday April 30th I am Frank Stanford joint by Chris towers today on the show We have a buy cell or hold segment rankings risers. It is time for Fernando Tati's to do something Something mostly power like he's been running, but man, we need something and much more But let's start with a big injury a big revelation We finally have some answers with Garrett crochet He was placed in the aisle with left shoulder inflammation crochet said that he's pretty confident He'll be able to return from the aisle in the minimum 15 days We'll see about that. He's actually coming off one of his better starts of the season But he felt some fatigue after that start on Saturday the Red Sox said they did this move mostly as a matter of caution here So Chris, do you think this is the likely explanation for Crochet struggles and how much do you worry about this just for his rest of season value to the first question? I think it's Probably most of the explanation for his struggles. He he talked today and he said Something like I started feeling a loss of strength in my shoulder back in the spring and He's been off going back to the spring You know you can look at it in a couple of different ways. There was the a couple of starts during the spring where he was complaining about just not feeling right with his fastball specifically There has been some fluctuation in the velocity in Season it's only down about half a mile per hour overall I think for the season, but there have been starts where it's been down more and Then his most recent start which like you mentioned was a good one. I think he only threw six cutters Which is really weird for Gerrard Crochet. So I think it all points to yeah There's been something wrong with him all along and and I think you can look at this as almost a Reason for optimism as long as it's as minimal as they're saying that it's just You know, he's just not even a structural issue. It's just that the shoulder's not a strong problem is Shoulders are really tricky and when you get put on the IL with shoulder inflammation You know that's one of those things the average IL stint for shoulder inflammation is 46 days the median is 30 I think that tells you a lot about how Uncertain this is because inflammation is not a diagnosis. It's a symptom and Whatever the underlying issue is is the the actual diagnosis whether it's you know Just muscular weakness, which just sounds like what they're talking about But or if it's a strain or or whatever, you know that that's that's where it comes in and that's where you get worried By all accounts from what we've heard There's nothing much to worry about here Accepted it's an elite starting pitch or dealing with shoulder soreness, you know like that that's by itself a lot to worry about So I think you can look at it and say Hopefully 15 days is enough to just get right and they'll focus on strengthening the shoulder and he'll come back and Pitch like we're used to but you know if you're If you're redrafting today Certainly there's no way Garakurshe could be a first rounder not a second and not a second rounder I think this at the very best pushes him back to In that second tier of pitchers maybe below them because There's some good pitchers there, you know when I when I updated my rankings earlier today I dropped Garakurshe for the rest of season to 15 That is behind Cam Schlippler Dylan Seas and Cole Reagan's It is just ahead of a bunch of guys who I think are talented but have some rewards like George Kirby, Calbrates, Geraion, Jesus Luzardo I like all those guys, but none of them feel like a sure thing chase Burns is 20 He doesn't feel like a sure thing Friday, Peralta Logan Webb, Framberfall, Des so I think crochet is kind of Straddling a tier there where if he comes back and looks like himself great. I think it'll be awesome There's at least a chance he just doesn't come back right like that's that's just how any injury for a pitcher works and so Shoulders especially are I don't know. I'm not a doctor, but there's a lot going on up there You got all kinds of muscles and tendons and like you know, that's it's a complex joint. Yeah You know they say the evolution of the shoulder muscle is part of how humans Evolved intelligence. It's an important part of the body is what I'm saying So I don't know I don't know where I was going with that, but I Hopefully he's fine. I have no idea. I genuinely generally genuinely don't I want to be very clear You you did say there was a chance there is always a chance I think it's a very minimal chance unlikely that he doesn't return again this season I just want to you know it would have to go war it would have to get worse from here Yes, I want to quell any fears for anyone listening who might have heard that I think it's a very minimal chance that that does happen But there's not much good that can come of this, but I guess the one thing is if you have paint and totally on your team It feels like he should be sticking around a little bit longer at the least But the paint totally and Brian Bayo just got a a little bit longer leash because Brian Bayo bad another bad start today His ERA is above nine. I think he was really bad at the end of last season two so it's been a Couple of months now for Brian Bayo where he's just been really bad so They have a lot of money invested in Brian Bayo I I have a hard time seeing them just pulling the plug on him entirely, but I think both him and Payne Toli are gonna spend the next 15 days or so Pitching for their jobs and frankly, I'm Pulling for Payne Toli. I know you guys were pretty down on him after last night and rightly so I'm not gonna give up yet. I'm not gonna drop him No, I wouldn't drop him either, but you know the velocity being down two miles per hour That's that's worrisome the control was pretty bad. Yeah, there were some YouTube comments like oh you reversed course immediately I'm like we have to react to new news and information like that's that's part of the job, man Most added starting pictures. I know that you mentioned on Sunday like kind of that big four from the weekend Which was Eric getty and Kyle Harrison and they're all they're all Obviously Payne Toli. I mean Kyle Harrison's 71% Ross or he could be out there in a few leagues chase Dolanders 58% So he could be out there in a few leagues J.R. Richie definitely would add traits all in there. Yeah, Richie It'll look so great here on Wednesday. Yeah, I think you take the sum total of the last two starts and it's I Don't think this guy's a star, you know that that's been my thing with both Richie and Didi Funtaz I think they're good prospects. They are not Even like when Chase Dolander got called up. He's a better prospect than both of those guys So I think Toli's a better prospect than Richie and Funtaz. So I Would be looking at Dolander 58% Richie at 55 Okay, I mean, it's a good team. He's got a little bit of runway here. Although you know strider coming back this week Does make it a little tougher Right now Delopas velocity was not back in his rehab or his bullpen parents today So that makes you feel a little bit better about J.R. Richie, but yeah Those are basically the main names that you could look at if you had gear crochet and you need a replacement Obviously there is no replacing what you expected to be first round production Although it has not been that way so far this season, but yeah, the big names that have popped up recently Kyle Harrison J.R. Richie Chase Dolander Yes, even Peyton Toli who did not have a great second start We'll talk about a few names coming up here and just a little bit. Let's get into that with the players of the night I find it pretty surprising that Kate Cavali has back-to-back double digit strikeout starts What do you make of that Chris? He is the third pitcher to do that this season and the previous two let me make sure I have the correct names Jose Soriano and Kevin Gosman That's not as impressive a list as I expected when I looked it up, but then you look at The guys who did it in the last two years and it's 15 different names. Can I should I go through them all or whatever? I don't have to but it's Gerrick crocheted it twice Terrick Scoobled it three times Chris sailed it at one or twice Luzardo Gosman chaseburn Schwalmbach Snail Soriano Rage of Suarez run his waters Framber Logan Web Zackwiler Yoshi no B young mo It's not exactly a list of the best 15 pitchers in baseball It's a far off you know like pretty much all of those guys with the exception I guess of Suarez and Schwalmbach because he's not healthy all those guys are at least top 30 starting pitchers so There haven't been a lot of guys who have faked double digit strikeouts and back-to-back starts over the last year plus That doesn't mean it's not fake Kade Kavalli
has real limitations. He's got a great curve on. I'm not sure anything else is all that great in his arsenal, but look, it's back-to-back double to just strikeout starts and if we're gonna get excited about a double to just strikeout start from Spancer Eragedi who has his own limitations and kind of a similar profile. And, you know, I do think you have to take Kade Cavali doing this seriously. And add him pretty much everywhere just in case. Like, I think you should have a pretty low tolerance for whenever the next bad start is, which very well may be his next start. But, I think double to just strikeout some back-to-back starts is enough to say someone in every league should be rostering this guy. A suggesting case. Especially when we're searching for like that next wave of starting pictures to add, right? Like, the group I just gave you, that group has kind of emerged for the past week or two. But we're looking for that next group that could emerge here. And Kade Cavali is widely available. He's only 28% rostered on CBS. A former top prospect, first round pick. He, you know, has had Tommy John surgery, I believe it was and tried to return last year, but didn't really come through on that. And now he's back and he's got that wicked curve ball, which he talked about. I agree. I don't really know that there's much else that's reliable in the arsenal. And even like, okay, 3.82 ERA 11K Pro9, that's impressive. 166 Whip. Yeah. That is. I mean, that's pretty bad before, he was pretty bad before the last two starts too. Yeah. But like, I don't know, Peter Lambert is 35% rostered. Would rather take the chance on Kade Cavali, even though I think Peter Lambert does some interesting things. Connor Prelip has basically the same roster rate. Nick Martinez is 59%. I know he's had some good starts, but like, we know Nick Martinez is fine at best. It's floor versus kind of that mystery box. Yeah, we know Nick Martinez is a low ceiling guy. Would you rather have Kade Cavali or Davis Martin who's been pitching well for the White socks? Cavali. Yeah. I think I see Foster Griffins of 49% would rather have Cavali. Yeah. Co-Hand of it's at 34. Rather have Cavali. Tyler Mallia 46. Yeah. I agree. I think I agree with most of that. Although, like, again, I definitely have my questions about Kade Cavali. I'm not saying he's going to be great, but most of the, like, none of these guys are going to be great probably. Yeah. What stands out for next week is it looks like he is in line for two starts against the twins and at the Marlins. So I know it's, I know this, the start of the season has been weird where the twins have actually hit them all decently. Well, the Marlins are pesky at times, but I still think when it's all said and done, they're probably below average offenses by seasons ends. And so I think those matchups are okay for for Kade Cavali. So again, lots of pitcher injuries right now. Trevor Rogers just went on the aisle. We'll get to that in a little bit too. So if you're missing out, yeah, you can, I think stream Kade Cavali with those matchups next week. My player of the night, what year is it? No one, Aranato, are you kidding me? We were talking before and I felt like dirty, just writing his name is my player of the night. What is going on? He went one for three with a walk in his fifth home run. He had three RBI last 14 games. The guy is mashing 404 batting average five homers, 15 RBI and OPS around 1200. He is not hitting the ball hard at all during that stretch or on the entire season for that matter. But he is 83 mile per hour average x philosophy. That is really bad. I mean, that's stuff that you see from the savior Edward Chandler Simpson, you know, guys like that. His barrel rate over the last 14 games is over 13%. His barrel rate on the season is 7%. And that is below the average. And it's not great. But no one Aranato has extreme pull flyball tendencies and he always has. And the last time he had a 7% barrel rate was in 2023 when he hit 26 homers. So is there a chance that we're getting a bit of a dead cat bounce here from no one Aranato at a very weak third base position? Maybe. What do you think? Probably not. Like he also has the worst stretch. I believe of his career. It's 19%. Which is bad for him, but but still good. It's still pretty good, but better than the average bad for him. And so I wanted to look at I was going to start listing some players. I was looking at fly ball and line drive average x philosophy because hey, when you're like that, that's more important, right? Like who cares if he's hitting soft grounders, if he's hitting the ball in the air, well, I was going to do like a list of guys who are hitting the ball harder when they hit line drives and fly balls than no one Aranato. And it's like Luis Araya's and have your snow hard Jacob Wilson and Mason win and guys who aren't very good. The problem is the list of guys hitting the ball harder when they hit it in the air than no one Aranato is 269 names long. And the list of guys who are hitting the ball less hard than no one Aranato and the hit in the air is Chandler Simpson, your bit Vivas, Steven Claw and Brandon Lockridge. And that is it. That's the end of the list. Look, if you want to play the hot hand, I've said it a couple times, but like in the past week or so, I'm much more open to playing the hot hand with hitters than pitchers because it can't go that wrong. You know, worst-case scenario, no, Aranato goes one for 20 over the next week and you just drop it. Worst-case scenario, if you pick up K. Gavalli, he could give up 12 runs in the next five innings over two starts. You know, like that's within the range of possibilities. So it can go a lot more wrong, but I'm not excited about the prospect of picking Aranato up. He's 57% rostered. Yeah. It feels fine. That feels too high even. I look, if you want to, again, ride the hot hand here. I'm looking at names that are just above him in terms of rostering a third base. It's Addison Barger, Mauricio Dubon, Royce Lewis, Ernie Clement. If you want to use Aranato over any of those guys, I don't have an issue with it. Just below him is Alec Bohm. Alec Bohm has been terrible this year. If you want to drop Alec Bohm for Nolan Aranato, I don't have an issue with that. Even like cult Keith who I think is doing some interesting things, but he never plays against lefties. So it's like in a point league, yeah, you probably want to have Nolan Aranato instead. Even if you don't want to have him. And then just above that group, you get into like Josh Young, Esauk Paratus, Miguel Vargas, who quietly is off to a very good start. Okamoto, I would still go with all those names ahead of Aranato, but kind of in that mid tier as a corner infield play, or if you're just in a deeper league and need help at third base, sure. Let's see where it goes. He is hitting in the middle of what should be pretty good D-backs line up there. One other thing I wanted to mention before we hit the break, Terrick Scoobal, strong quality start at the brave, seven innings, two runs, seven strike outs, zero walks, 16 whiffs on 91 pitches. He was mostly Terrick Scoobal just really good. Something to watch when I was watching this game. He was shaking his left arm and looked to be in discomfort. He actually called the trainer out. And after that, Scoobal said, "No, I'm good. I want to stay in." He struck out the side. His velocity looked fine, location looked fine, but just the fact that that happened and he requested the catcher and the trainer come out was kind of weird. And then he just stayed in the game. So I hope nothing comes of it, but he was the number one pitcher drafted. So just have to mention it. Something to watch there with Terrick Scoobal. Welcome back in fantasy at baseball. Today let's hit the news and notes. Trevor Rogers was placed in the aisle with an illness and not sure what it is, whatever it is, must be pretty bad for him to go on the aisle for it. Speaking of pretty bad, his last three starts, 953 ERA, 212 Whip, lots of walks, massive babbip, three homers loud, three in that three start stretch. So he has not looked good. Kind of wonder how long he's been dealing with whatever illness it is. Perhaps it affected the production, but he'll get a couple weeks off here to try and figure out to get healthy and obviously figure out what's going on there. Which are the Rogers. Some reliever updates, Daniel Polencia could be activated as early as Friday. You want to run could also be ready to return within a couple of days and rice, Eleglacias could be reinstated from the aisle when first eligible next Tuesday. Spencer Strider will make his season debut Sunday against the Rockies in course field. If you're playing a daily line-up league, I think you should play it safe. Rockies lineup is not great. I totally get that, but first start of the season and it's in course field. I'd rather take a wait and see approach. Very interested to see just what Spencer Strider looks like in that start. Obviously, it's a rocky kind of stinks because it's if he looks good, if he looks terrible, if the fastball movement is good or bad, we have no idea what that means because it's that course field.
right? It's just, it's a, it's an analysis vacuum. Yep. You know, moving on. Casey Meyers was placed in the aisle with a right at Doctor strain. Vinnie Pascuantino was out of the lineup due to lower back tightness. They insist that he will not go on the aisle, even though he revealed he's been dealing with this back injury for quite a while now. So a back brace on after Sunday's game. I think someone mentioned. So that explains why he's off to a slow start. I mean, he got off to a really slow start last year as well. I was watching that game. I think Tuesday night before they pulled them in. Yeah, he made a swing and he could barely get out of the batter's box. So probably going to need a couple days off at least here for Vinnie P and speed such a big part of this game. Garrett Cole made his third rehab start this one at AA 5 and 2/3 innings three hits three runs three strikeouts to zero walks two homers allowed. He got up to 60 pitches. Apparently he was consistently hitting 94 to 95 miles per hour. He touched 96. That is very similar to when I saw Garrett Cole for his first rehab start. And that is below where he typically has been at in his career. He also has allowed four home runs in three starts and only has 10 strikeouts and 14 a third inning. So I don't want to overreact to this Chris because part of my mind is like veteran pitcher coming back. He might just be coasting and like worrying more about just throwing strikes and things like that because he has thrown a lot of strikes. He's been very efficient and maybe you know, hitters are just taking advantage of that. The other side is like, all right, velocity is down a little bit. He's getting tagged a little bit. Like I can't be concerned about Zach Wheeler and not be concerned about Garrett Cole, right? Yeah, I mean, the thing like his velocity isn't down as much as Zach Wheeler's was, but it is down a little bit. So my expectation right now is I think there are Cole when he's back and there's no way of knowing this is just me guessing, but I think he's more like an SP SP three for fantasy. Like that's my expectation right now. A top 40 is top 35 is starting pitcher when he's healthy. I mean, maybe he can build up and I don't think he'll get close to let me not say close. I don't think he will be the pitcher he was before, but I think optimistically the highest he can get is like, maybe like 80 or 90% of the pitcher he was before. And that should still be really good. But we also have to keep in mind, San Alcantra last year. Yes, very shaky for a long time. Tommy John surgery in the long run has a very good track record. In the short run, you don't always expect guys to be themselves the first season back. Justin Verlander is the notable exception. He won a Sion in his first season back at like a 39. That guy's a freak. You can't expect that from everyone. Gare Cole is, I mean, he's not just in Verlander, but he's going to the Hall of Fame probably. So, you know, we're talking about a very, very good pitcher with a long track record. I expect I think you're right. The 40 ish at SP is probably what I expect. I'm more optimistic about Carlos Rodón coming back from a less serious injury. Jared Jones made his first rehab start at low A on Wednesday. He threw three perfect innings with five strikeouts. Apparently, average 99 miles per hour on his fastball and maxed out at 101 miles per hour. Lots of excitement about him in previous years. And obviously he is coming back from I'm not sure if it was Tommy John or the internal brace. Do you know off hand Chris for Jared Jones? I was. Ger Jones. It was internal brace. Okay. And so we don't have a long track record of that. Just that. And especially good. 36% rostered. I mean, even with knowing coming back from the injury, I'm still pretty interested in stashing him right now. Absolutely. Yeah. I mean, he's like 36% rostered. I think that, yeah, let's go ahead and and add him just in case my expectations are, it'll be rough. But the average 99.1 miles per hour with his fastball today. That's pretty good. That's a sign that the stuff is there. It's also his first start back. You know, adrenaline is always a thing who knows how sustainable that would be. But he wasn't a perfect pitcher to begin with. The internal brace adds complications on top of that. But yeah, let's, let's see. I'll take anyone with upside at starting pitcher. May the Machado return to the lineup as the DH. He's been dealing with some calf soreness junior Caminero was back in the lineup after taking a foul ball off the face on Tuesday. George Springer was activated, but not in the lineup on Wednesday. Mookie Bet said that he recently resumed hitting it after he experienced some renewed soreness in his right oblique. He said he feels that he's turned a corner with the injury. White Langford is on track to return when first eligible on Saturday. Harald O'Pardomo returns a lineup after missing two games with a left ankle sprain. Luis Robert has missed three straight with lower back tightness. A. Eugenio Suarez is left oblique remains tender. The hope is that it will improve in the coming days before getting more imaging done in early May. Jason Dominguez left early Wednesday after being hit by a pitch on his left elbow. I believe he got some imaging done, which was inconclusive, which doesn't sound the best and just feels like it could be a tough break here for Jason Dominguez. Touch. So you, you, my looks pretty bad in his rehab outing on Tuesday at double a two inning six hits four runs three walks two strikeouts and a Homer allowed he through just 53% of his pitches for strikes. I'm starting to get a little nervous here Chris with tattoo you. Emy, where are you at? Oh, I'm very nervous. Uh, at this point, I would say, I'm not even hopeful. Let alone optimistic. That'll be good. I'm, I'm stashing him because this was a very good pitcher in Japan who has really interesting stuff. And, you know, I think he's just have trouble adjusting, but that's not looking any better so far. So I think you have to be skeptical. I'm it helps that he's on the I L and you can stash him in an I L spot. That's the biggest thing. Royals president J J piccolo said Carlos system is his velocity during a live BP was closer to where it needs to be. Jose bros could rejoin the blue J's rotation Monday against the raise. He has allowed five earned runs in two of his three rehab starts and his last outing at triple A. He allowed two homers. His velocity was down quite a bit. He is 15% rostered. Chris, do you have any interest in Jose bros? I am interested in anyone who has upside. So no, I'm not very interested in it. For a guy you say, Kucchi left his start early due to left shoulder tightness and Yankees prospect Elmer Rodriguez made his debut here on Wednesday. He went four plus innings at Texas. It was four hits, two runs, four walks, three strikeouts, eight whips on 80 pitches. You could tell that he was, I think there were nerves here. He threw just 53% of his pitches for strikes and command is usually one of his, you know, or supposed to be one of his calling cards here, one of his stronger tools. So I'm not sure that he sticks around Chris and I'm not sure that you need to add him as a result of that Elmer Rodriguez. I mean, where would he stick around? I think he can make one more start if they yeah, because they might have Rodon make two more rehab starts. Yeah. So if that's the case, then Elmer Rodriguez probably would stick around for another start, but I don't think he would get anything after that. Yeah, that's what I mean is it's a very short term, but we've got Rodon coming back likely in the next 10 days. We've got Garrett Cole probably coming back. I think it would have to be within the next 20 days, I think, based on the, the timetable. So look, life, life finds way. Anything happen. Elmer Rodriguez is talented, but I think he needed to pitch really well to force him into a tough decision and he didn't. So I think he's interesting, but not someone you need to rush out, NAD. All right, let's get into waiver wire pitchers from Wednesdays. Action. We spoke about Kate Cavali, a couple of their names here. Luis Severino dominated the Royals seven innings, one run with eight strikeouts, 14 whiffs on 103 pitches. Back to back quality starts for Severino. James and Tyone, seven innings, three runs, six strikeouts at the Padres. And J Ritchie, who we mentioned earlier, not as good in the second start against the Tigers, five and a third, five hits, three runs, four walks, four strikeouts. Chris, how are you? Let's throw Cavali in this mix. How would you rank these four? Cavali, Severino, Tyone and J Ritchie. I think I would go Cavali, Severino, Tyone and Richie. Oh, no, no, no, no. Cavali, Richie, Severino, Tyone. Just the mystery box of J Ritchie, even with, you know, not knowing what his role is going to be. I'm assuming they're going to DFA, Martin Perez. Again, I think he was already DFA'd once. I would assume he's the one who gets the boot, but, you know, Richie was not great here. The control was bad. So there's a chance they sent him down, but I'll still take him over. Severino and Tyone, who are not totally uninteresting, especially with, Severino only two walks over the past two starts. That was the big issue for him. Yeah, the first five starts. He had 20 walks in his first 19 and two thirds innings. But two or three walks the last two starts. He gets two starts next week against Philadelphia and Baltimore.
away from Sacramento. I think Severino is an okay streamer for next week and Tion I think has two starts as well. In Cincinnati don't love that but then at Texas that's pretty good. So I think both Severino and Tion are interesting streamers for next week but if you're not just looking for next week I'll prioritize Cavali and Richie over them. Yes I do want to look something up with Tion. So Tion, the start against the reds is actually in Chicago so that makes it a little bit. Well that's a little better yeah. A little bit more palatable obviously just not being in Great American ballpark as a home run pro and pitcher there in Davis to Tion and then the other one at Texas which is a pretty good place to pitch and not a great line up there. So I agree with the order that you rank those guys and I agree that Severino and Tion especially in points leagues if you need a streamer you're chasing those two starters I could see them being okay next week. Couple deep league names here Eric Fettie looked great against the Angels seven innings two runs six strikeouts to zero walks. He gets one start at the Angels next week and Andre Palante quality start at the pirate six innings one run six strikeouts here had 12 whiffs on 91 pitches home against the Brewers next week. Deep league stuff here Chris do you have any thoughts on Eric Fettie or Andre Palante? If Fettie when you're talking about a marginal pitcher like this and I think he is truly marginal I don't think you want to roll the dice against the same lineup twice in a row that that often goes poorly hitters do better the more they see pitchers who's I really sorry like who was the dude who hit two homers for the white socks last night. Not Drew Romo. I think it was Drew Romo. Drew Romo yeah yeah there was a I saw something about he was using the traject machine every I think every team in baseball now has a traject machine in their home park. If for the people who don't know traject machines are really fancy batting cages basically that can they can program them to simulate the arm angle and movement profile of any pitch they have all the data for pitchers they input it into that and it allows you to see the picture before I think they even have like sometimes they'll have like a little video of the pitcher throwing it's very cool and I've seen a lot of talk about like this is going to make the home field advantage for hitters even bigger and that was something that Drew Romo was talking about that he feels like that's really helped him it's the first time he's ever used one so that is to say on the point of Eric Fettie not wanting to start him facing a line at the same time you just you don't want pitchers to see the same hitters that often it tends to go poorly unless you're not a great pitcher and I don't think Eric Fettie is Palate a good game great slider today it's kind of the only pitch he has that's any good so I don't really Milwaukee is not a great match up so I think you can go ahead and skip him for sure over to the waiver wire hitters we spoke about no one Aronato Cole Young looks like he is picking things back up here two for four with three RBI in his second stolen base last five games he has ten hits one Homer seven RBI and one steal he has the overall batting average up to two eighty six expected stats look solid here yeah 43% rostered as a second basement do you feel like that number should be higher Chris yeah yeah I think the fact the second base is so bad even with Fernanda Tati scanning second base eligibility which he did yesterday I believe so that was cool south steward also has third base eligibility we haven't mentioned that yet second base is still pretty bad so you know we talked about Travis Bessana who none of us are like super thrilled about might be a top 12 option already I think anybody with a whiff of upside is worth adding and called going the up on our line numbers very good so I'm interested yeah yeah I'm looking at names that are just ahead of him in terms of roster rate the weasel Garcia cult key Jeremiah Jackson I'll take him over all those guys yeah I feel like I would agree with that multi position hitters here any interest in these names Ernie Clement one for five with his first home run last 11 games he's hitting 319 one Homer OPS around 900 he has played every game this season for the blue jays Brooks Lee making some noise two for four with two RBI and his second steel pretty much in every day player last 17 games 281 five homers 13 RBI two steals 91 mile per hour average exit velocity kind of surprised me for Brooks Lee Daniel Schneeman continues to hit well two for four with his second stolen base he has started seven of past eight games and matcha has quietly been very good for the cups this year three for four with his third home run the problem is that he's only started five of their past 13 games and I don't really see a way that that is going to change so can I interest you in any of these multi position guys Chris Ernie Clement Brooks Lee Daniel Schneeman and matcha Schneeman is just a hot hand play Shaw is just a deep league upside stash if someone gets hurt you know he does have multiple places he could play second third outfield maybe shortstop if they have injuries so that's good to have but I don't think he's going to matter until that happens Schneeman just a hot hand play I don't expect this to continue he's striking out 30% of the time he's a decent power hitter but I don't I don't believe in it long term Brooks Lee probably also a hot hand play but maybe a little higher end than Schneeman just because there is some interesting stuff with how he's hitting the ball he does play every day but not super excited Clement is a hard player because he does exactly you know what I'll be generous he does three things well for fans he hits for a high batting average he plays every day and he is eligible almost everywhere in the infield just first base this is where he's not so like that's a useful player to have around and it's also a really easy player to drop if someone more interesting comes around so like yeah if you don't specifically need a third baseman or shortstop I think I drop or any Clement for call yo because I think there's more juice there I think there's more ups but Clement's going to hit for a high batting average it's probably not 300 but it's probably 285 there's zero power he has first home run today there's very little speed there's very little counting stats I think he's been hitting Lee off a little bit yeah but that'll probably change when George Springer's back in line up so I think 69% is probably about the ceiling for a guy like Ernie Clement with his limitations yeah I agree with all that the one name I do in a watch here is Brooks Lee just because he has some prospect pedigree and he typically hasn't really hit the ball hard in the past but the 17 game stretch again 91 mile per hour average EV is at least a little interesting there for Brooks Lee some deeper names Brian Roqueo has been solid three for four with his second stolen base he has played every game but one so far this season he's got three home runs and two steals Brady House launched a grand slam here for the nationals Curtis Mead four for five with his fourth home run four runs and two RBI pretty much just a short side platoon and then welcome to the marlins S.T.A. or E. Ruiz is he back in our lives two for four with a sock into shoe he actually got the start against a right here in Tyler Glass now that's who he hit the home run off of this is just a really busy lineup with the marlins and there's a lot going on so I just don't really see how Ruiz is going to play but in a deeper category I mean there's always intrigue I mean the guy just last year in the miners stole 63 bases so it's like he's always kind of in the back of my mind I just don't really know how he's going to play enough here but any interest Chris deep relieves S.T.A. Ruiz Curtis Mead Brady House and Brian Roqueo yeah me and house are the two that like I felt like they were having good seasons because every time I look at the box score I guess I just I only notice when they have good games right like when Brady House goes over four you know that's it's you know dog bites man and so I think that's I thought that they were having better seasons than they were but no I mead only playing its lefties that's not enough and how I said just I don't think there's enough juice there I know he was a former first round pick but wasn't great the miners wasn't great last year not great so far this year so I think all these guys you can pretty much ignore well you're the marlin's guy anyway that we could get some playing time here from Ruiz I think it's unlikely it would probably have to come at oh in case he's expense unless they wanted to you know he started as an infielder but I don't think he's played much infield lately so I think it's pretty unlikely estuary is going to matter I don't know a best case scenario talking about like a not nussie mnunez type which is pretty boring all right let's take our final break when we return let's have a chat about Fernando Tati's we'll do that right after this welcome back in fantasy baseball today Fernando Tati's I have had enough I haven't seen the movie but it's it's a hilarious clip I don't know what that one is I'm tired of this grandpa
- My wife showed it to me recently, I thought it was hilarious. It's from the movie "Holes." - Oh, okay. - Wow, I haven't seen that movie in a long time, but-- - I know it's like a popular meme. - Good book. - Gif. - I thought you were gonna play like, there's a Beastie boy, I was listening to "Sit It On The Other" today, actually, this is the second time I'm mentioning. I was listening to "L Communication" the other day. It's like, "Get It Together." I thought you were gonna play that. - Well, you know what, we need something to happen. For an anotot tease, he went one for three with RBI, his eight stolen base, zero homers. We are more than a month into the season. He is slugging 286. Shrike Out Raid is up a little bit. I think there is some bad luck involved here. How many times have we said that for a Fernando Tatees? He has 11 barrels and no homers. That is almost impossible. Normally, the conversion rate is like, you expect 60% of a hitter's barrels to go for home runs, typically on average. 11 barrels and no homers, that seems pretty impossible here for Fernando Tatees. The expected stats look a lot better. His hard hit rate is the highest in Major League Baseball. It's just not optimized for power, which is just very frustrating. Chris, we need something. Would you be looking to buy low on Fernando Tatees right now? - Yeah, absolutely. I had a piece go up on cbsports.com, great website. Have you heard of it? Yesterday, today, dirt Wednesday. Talking about four by lows and one by high. Fernando Tatees was one of the by lows. Ronald Cunio was one of the other ones. Yvonne Herrera, I wrote it before he hit the home run yesterday and, gosh, there's someone else in picture maybe. I don't know. And Michael Harris was the by high. I'm buying it. Fernando Tatees is clearly not optimized for power at this point in his career. He had the one crazy season, I think was 2019. His 42 homers and others were like, oh, Stereo, it's whatever. He also had a 20% pull rate that year, which is the huge outlier for his career. He's done a 6% pull there right this year. Even with that, his furthest hit ball this year is 370 feet for a guy with a 94 mile per hour exit velocity. Who, when he hits the ball in the air, I mentioned that stat about exit velocity online drives and fly balls, he has the seventh highest at like 99 miles per hour. So it's not like he's hitting a bunch of hard grounders and a bunch of soft fly balls. I don't know what's going on. It's weird for sure, but I absolutely believe that Fernando Tatees will be a very good player, a top 20 player, the rest of the way. It's frustrating that it isn't happening yet, but season's still early. I know everybody hates when we say that, but I am not going to give up hope on Fernando Tatees because of a bad month when everything under the hood still looks good. Maybe you can say this is not the impact bat. This is not one of the best hitters in baseball. Okay, that's fine. Hit what 25 homers last year, still 30 bases. He's got eight steals already. He's on a 40 steel pace. Still hitting the ball really hard. I think he's going to hit 280 and I think he's going to hit 20 to 25 homers. That's a must start superstar caliber player, even if it's not one of the best players in baseball. Maybe he can't do that anymore, but I think you are going to be very happy that you have Fernando Tatees on your team eventually. Man, the duality of baseball, when you tell me, Fernando Tatees has the seventh highest average exit velocity on flyballs and line drives and has zero homers. Yet Nolan Aranato has one of the lowest in baseball and has five homeruns in his last 14 games. Just seems impossible, but that goes back to one player fully optimizes their swing to get the most out of it, power wise, an Aranato and just pulling everything down the line and Tatees doing the exact opposite. So I think Tatees, like, look, far be it for me, I don't mind, nobody. I think it needs to change his swing a little bit. With the bat speed that he has and the athleticism that he has, even if he's not quite the guy he used to be, this should be a guy who's trying to get out in front of the ball every single time. He should be a 40-home run guy. Yeah. At the very least, he should be a 30-home or guy at least with his physical tools. He makes enough contact. He hits the ball in the air. It's not like he's a 60% ground ball rate guy. It's just I would love to see Fernando Tatees working on-- It's all like the middle. It's like power alleys, you know? It's just especially in pet codes. It's-- It's kind of hard to make that work. Even with all that. He's going to be better than he has been. Yeah, 100% agree with that. Some rankings risers, Mike Trout hit another one. His 10th home run, he is up to a 1,000 OPS on the nose. He has 29 runs scored five steals. And I raised him in the rankings here on Wednesday. And then I look and like, you and Scott are way ahead of me. I'm like, wow, OK. I am still guarding a little bit against like injury and things like that. So I moved trout up to my 21st ranked outfielder. I think you have him like 13 or 14, which I get. I mean, he's one of-- one outfielder that's actually performing so far this season. But yeah, I'm just-- I'm guarding a little bit against injury. But yeah, he's-- I'm pretty much completely buying into what we are seeing performance-wise from Mike Trout. Every year, this is like one of the toughest types of players to rank. On the pitching side, it's Tyler Glass now, right? Yep. When Tyler Glass now is healthy, are there 15 pitchers you'd rather have than him? I don't think so. Why not? If Mike Trout's healthy, especially cutting the strikeout rate like he has this season, getting the athleticism back, I'm looking at the rankings. If you told me he was going to play the same game number of games as everyone here, I'd rather have them peak-crorm strong. Jackson Merrill, Cody Belinger, Rowan Anthony, Riley Green. I'd rather have him than those guys. If he's going to play every game, I just have no idea if he will. He might. In which case, he'd be a top 10 L fielder, I think. It's impossible to rank him, though. Yeah. Liam Hicks will not stop. One for two with two walks. And his seventh home run, this one came off of Tyler Glass now. He leads all catcher eligible players with 28 RBI this season. Number one, number one, number two catcher, I think. Yeah, it's-- I mean, hitting 315, he's got a 940. 1-0-PS. I moved him up to my 18th ranked catcher, which is just behind Dylan Dingler, Samuel Basayo, Carter Jensen, Francisco Alvarez. And then it's a head of pretty much an injured tier, Kyle Teal, Real Muto, Alejandro Kirk. And then I have Dalton Varsho. As good as Varsho has been, I just don't think he's going to play enough. So what do you think about moving Hicks up that high inside the top 20? He's 19 for me, my update today. And that's with like-- I haven't behind Austin Wells. I think I need to change that. I'd rather have Liam Hicks than Austin Wells at this point. So I don't fully believe it. By the way, overstating at Liam Hicks is only the third best catcher in fantasy in the fantasy player rater on fan graphs. What a bum. Ben Rice and Drake Baldwin are number two and three overall. And Liam Hicks is number eight. That's very funny. Yep. Matt Olson is off to a great start. He hit his ninth home run. They walk off Homer in this one. I moved them up to my third ranked first baseman. So ahead of Pitalanzo, ahead of Bryce Harper. Obviously, Rafael Devers, who we will talk about soon, some pretty bad stuff going on with Devers as well. His teammate, Ozzie Albi, is home run off of Terrick Schoolville. His seventh home run he has three home runs in his past six games. I moved them up to my sixth ranked second baseman. So just ahead of like Keishel and I think Brandon Lyle, the only names ahead of Albi's now are Altuve Horner, Terang, Marta and Jazz Chisholm. What do you think? Very small moves here, but Matt Olson and Ozzie Albi is moving up slightly at their positions. I have Olson fourth, but that's a minor quibble. You do have Ozzie Albi's ranked too high. Why is that? For an attitude he's a second-based eligible. That is correct. That's the only. That's the seventh ranked second. I have the exact same number. I have the exact same guys ranked ahead of him. If we were drafting right now, Ozzie Albi's would be a top 100 pick for me. I love what we're seeing. The quality of contact, I think we talked about this recently. It's not great. It has gotten better over the past couple of weeks. And it's usually never great. And also he's doing the thing we need him to do, which is crushing lefties. Three homers, 985 OPS against lefties. That's always been the thing for Ozzie Albi's is, he's like a 700 OPS guy against righties. He just keeps his head above water and crushes lefties. He's a superstar against lefties. Didn't do that last year because of the hand injury. He's back to doing it. Let's talk about Gavin Williams, who is awesome once again. He gets the raise, seven and two-thirds innings. One uner-and-run, nine strikeouts to zero walks. He has 13 whiffs on 95 pitches. The walks have been much better lately. Two walks are fewer in each of his last four starts. And he's down to a 270 ERA 102 whip. And I moved him up to SP27. What do you think about that Chris inside the top 30 for Gavin Williams? - That sounds like where I have him ranked. This is one that like, yeah, I'm 29. This is one that the way I talk about Gavin Williams and the way I rank him tend to be kind of different 'cause I don't really trust him. And it's mostly because I don't trust that he's as good as he looks when he's at his best. And I think that's where, [BLANK_AUDIO]
I know Scott really likes Gavin Williams. He probably has him, I don't know, eight spots higher than me or something. - He has him 25th, so not too much. - Okay, so not that much. I think Scott really believes in the good version of Gavin Williams. And for me, it's just, I think the bad version is always there. And that's mostly the difference is just, I understand he's good, I understand what he does well. I can't quite buy it yet. - All right, let's move on to a buy cell or hold segment here. - Bubba Chandler, he is really struggling with these walks, man. This time against the Cardinals, five innings, three runs, four walks, six strikeouts. He has three or more walks in four of six starts. He has four or more walks in three of six starts. And he's still 91% roster, he's 62% started. The problem is it looks like he lines up for two starts next week. Chris, buy cell or hold on Bubba Chandler. - Hold for sure. - Maybe buy if he's not currently on your team because this is a guy I think we'll figure it out and be really good. It's just, will that happen in May? Will that happen in August? Will that happen in 2027? I can't answer that question. We had someone on Twitter say, "Oh, you guys keep saying you have to stash him, but what if I'm in a league where only 250 players are rostered?" Well, it's, I rank him inside the top 250, but I get it, right? Like that's a league with a really high replacement level on the waiver wire and you probably gotta be really active for there's gonna be really good players coming available and if you can't use Bubba Chandler in that league, sure, maybe you drop him, but I don't want to. I want to be around when Bubba Chandler figures it out 'cause I think it's gonna be awesome. We saw that at the end of last season. - Would you start him at the D-backs at the Giants next week? - Wouldn't want to? - Yeah, even in a punch league, I don't seem excited about it. It's like, one of the chances he's gonna give you six innings in a quality start. - He might, very low. - He might walk 10 people in two starts. - Yeah. Yeah, I don't think I would want to start Bubba Chandler there. Taj Bradley continued his strong start to the season. Seven innings to run, seven strikeouts, he had 18 whiffs on 114 pitches, two earned runs are fewer and six of seven starts he has gone. Six innings or more in five of seven starts. - I think he is a pretty clear, sell high candidate, Chris. What do you think about that? - I have zero faith in Taj Bradley. Like I've said it a lot over the past couple of weeks, he is the kind of pitcher that just, I think he's gonna drive you crazy. Because the good start's gonna be really good and they're gonna be really tantalizing. You're gonna buy into them and then he's gonna follow it up with a disaster. I think his last start before this was really bad, right? - Six runs. - Six runs here. - Yeah, I just, I have no faith. - Outside of that one bad start, he has been really consistent this season. He's been, the results have been good. The underlying numbers are ERAs closer to four across the board. So that just, I just don't believe the consistency's coming. It might, but it's a type of pitcher that I just, it's so frustrating to have on your roster because trying to predict when he's good and when he's not is, it seems impossible. I don't think it matters who he's facing. It's just, does he have it that day or not? And I would rather not have that guy in my roster, but I'm not, you can't drop him with what he's doing right now. - No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. - If you can't sell high on him in cash in and again, emphasis on the high part of that sell high on him, he has a 285 ERA, but it comes with a 408 X-Fib, a 424 X-ERA. He's allowing a ton of hard contact, 94.1 average exit velocity, and over three walks per nine. So lots of walks, he's getting strikeouts, but also lots of walks and lots of hard contact. That's a very-- - There are so many these are new issues for him. - That's a very fine line to walk here for Todd Bradley. And I think as the weather starts to heat up, we're gonna start to see some of those balls fly out of the yard there against Todd Bradley. If you can turn him into how Brad is right now, would you do that? - Oh yeah, absolutely, a question. I was thinking one of those like injured guys coming back, strider, Cole, Rodon. - Yeah. - I would try to do that. I think they'll be frustrating as well, potentially, but I have more faith in any of them figuring out the high upside. - George Kirby finished one out short of a quality start at the twins, five and two-thirds innings, two runs, five strikeouts here. If Statcast is correct, I will look this up right now again. He threw a new sweeper today, and it was his most used pitch at 29% usage. And he completely, like not completely, but he lowered his fastball usage tremendously, only through a 12% of the time. That's usually his bread and butter. So he is searching right now. He's like kind of tinkering and trying to figure this out. What do you think? By cell or hold on George Kirby? - This is another one I lean hold. I noticed the sweeper thing as well. And when I looked into it, if you look at the characteristics of the pitch, it doesn't look that different from the slider that he's been throwing this season, but the slider does look different than it has in the past. He's getting, on average, this season, before today's start, the slider was getting about 13 inches of horizontal break. Last season, it was 10.7. So I think my guess, I don't know, but my guess is that this is just reclassifying the slider with a sweepier look this year. - Okay. - I think that's my explanation for what happened, because he didn't throw the slider, and all the sliders usually one of his most thrown pitches. It looks like it was just the slider's a sweeper now. Okay. He's weird. He, the strikeout rate is down below 20% still after this start. The walk rate is still very good, but it's not the 3%, it was before last season. It's more like 5%. He's living on weak contact right now, and that's not a fluke, but it's probably not sustainable that he's gonna keep putting up a sub-300 expected woe bond contact. That is basically nobody does that consistently. So I would say George Kirby is a sell high, but it's also like, but I think he'll pitch better moving forward too. So I think it'll come out in the wash and he'll still be a low to mid-3's ERA guy. - Nathan of Aldi had a massive start against the Yankees. Seven shutout innings with seven strikeouts. 20 whiffs on 102 pitches. He threw more splitters and cutters in this one, which makes sense against a left handed heavy lineup. He is destroying a splitter a lot this year, like near 40%. And I think that's part of why he's kind of had some of these blow-up starts. It's just a hard pitch to throw that much and make it work. So kind of the antithesis of what he was last year, where he was just keeping all the runs off the board. He's had a few blow-up starts this year, where you add on him by seller hold on Nathan of Aldi. - Lean by. This is another one that we are pretty confident there's going to be an injury at some point. That's always this for Nathan of Aldi. So it's frustrating that you drafted him, expecting him to be a must-start guy when he's healthy. He's been healthy and he hasn't been that. But great starts in four of his past five. Nothing really looks all that concerning under the hood. So I genuinely think he will be better moving forward than he has been. - Sandi Alcantara equality start at the Dodgers six innings, two runs four strikeouts to two walks. We need more strikeouts for sure. It's 5.9 K per nine. But his swinging strike rate is actually up quite a bit compared to last year. So I do think more strikeouts are on the way. By seller hold on Sandi. By, I think he is a good pitcher if he's striking out seven per nine. If he can get to like eight and a half per nine, then he's a great pitcher. And I think that's the key distinction. But I think you'll be very happy you have Sandi Alcantara no matter what. - And I did not have that ready to go, but Chris is saying to buy on. - Sandi. - Tell me about it. - Step. And the pitcher opposing, Sandi was Tyler Glass now who struggled with his control five and two thirds innings two runs six walks, nine strikeouts. This season he is now throwing a knuckle curve and a curve. And both were very different in this start. I wonder if maybe he's trying to do too much and maybe those pitches are too similar. And it's, I don't know. It makes me feel a little bit weird just throwing like two different kind of curve balls. That's similar I guess. But everything before this was great. So buy seller hold on Tyler Glass now. - He's weird because he had always been, ever since he left the pirates basically. He's been fast ball slider curve. That was it. You basically saw nothing else from Tyler Glass. Maybe he did experiment with a cutter one year and like, we'll throw the avery occasional change up. But I think it's just been forseem curve ball slider. And now he's sinker forward. That happened like four starts ago where he just started throwing a sinker all of a sudden. It's got like 14 inches of induced vertical break and 11 inches of horizontal break. He's throwing this knuckle curve now. It's weird. It's interesting. I don't know. I think it's awesome. I think the only question is whether he stays healthy. But yeah, it's, you know, you're introducing a bunch of different pitches. It can be hard to do that consistently in throw strikes, but it hadn't been an issue before today. Right? - Yeah. - He'd been one of the best pitchers in baseball before today. Hold on Tyler Glass now.
Again, it's gonna get her at some point probably. It's not a guarantee. Maybe this is the season he throws 160 innings, but it's not likely, he's never done it. - Yeah, I lean sell, but I was out on glass now coming into the season, so yeah. - Sure, I think that's fair. - Just kind of anchoring to that. I do agree, I think he'll get hurt at some point. If, and look, I would only sell him if I can get a top 20 starting pitcher in return for him, but if not, I'd probably just stick it out with Tyler Glass now on my team. Hitters, turning things around. PCA, Pete Crow Armstrong, hit his third home run at last 15 games, all of a sudden. Hitting 288 with two home runs, two steals, and an 864 OPS. Wilson Catreras has quietly been very good. He has three home runs in his past five games. Hunter Goodman had two home runs here on Wednesday. He has four homeers in his past five games. And Connor Griffin, he's making some things happen right now. Last 15 games, hitting 278, two homeers, six steals. A 760 OPS. The plate discipline remains a problem early on here, but in terms of power and speed, that stuff is starting to come around here for Connor Griffin. Anything to add, Chris, on Griffin, Goodman, Wilson Catreras, and PCA. - The haters were right about Connor Griffin. He was not ready at 19. And then he hit his first home run at 20 on his 20th birthday. - Oh, he's ready, baby. - He's ready. - No, I mean, like, yeah, I think you always had to be patient with Connor Griffin. It was always a bet on the long term upside. We talked about it last week, but I traded McGonagall for Kevin Griffin, Connor Griffin, and Parker Messick. - I love that. - It's risky, but yeah, it was a fan of it. 'Cause I think Parker Messick's a top 36 pitcher. And yeah, McGonagall's better than Griffin right now, but Griffin was the better prospect, at least coming into the season. So if it turns around as good as McGonagall looks, if Griffin's better by the end of the season, I wouldn't be shocked either. So it was always a bet on the long term upside. And then PCA is just, it's a long season, guys. Say that as a guy, as someone who did not believe in P. Kharam's strong, he was never gonna be one of the worst hitters in baseball, though. Now let's bump him back up the lineup, 'cause I think it was an eighth against a righty today, which is, yeah, that's not great. - That part is not so great. Some other hitting leftovers, chased the lauders, signs of life two for three with a walk in two RBI. His previous 21 games before this 208 batting average with zero home runs. Wandsoto has homered in two straight. No outfield, no problem for him. Kevin McGonagall has not stopped hitting two for four with a RBI. I saw this tweet yesterday as well. Only Yordon Alvarez and Ronald D'acunia have more outs that have traveled over 350 feet than Kevin McGonagall, who has nine of them. So as the weather starts to heat up, I have to think some of those balls are gonna just travel a little bit further. And we're gonna start to get some more power here at of McGonagall. Kind of crazy that Yordon Alvarez is good as he's been. Has like 10 outs that have traveled to 150 plus feet. - If every single thing you hit is going 350 plus feet, I guess some of them have to be out, right? - I guess so. Where do the outfielder stand, just on the warning track? - Yeah, on top of the wall, I think. - Riley Greene, I wanted to mention him as well. Three home runs and his past six games. I was a skeptic coming in, but the early returns here look really nice for Riley Greene. Expected stats look really good for him. So I wanted to give him a shout out as well. - I love to see the improved play discipline for Riley Greene. McGonagall, I do wonder if this is just, if he's just a tweener power header right now. And you know, that might be an issue for him, but he's so good at everything else that even if it's only 15 homers, I think he's a legit. I mean, I was talking to some people the other day, just like what does an 80 grade hit tool look like in Major League Baseball right now? It's like Freddie Freeman, maybe he ain't judged honestly, even though he strikes out a lot. Kevin McGonagall, he doesn't have 80 raw power. It's probably like 45, 50, but he makes the most out of all the contact he gets, and he makes so much good contact that. Like, this guy is gonna win a batting title at some point. I really believe that and then chased a lotter. I never lost faith. I know he got off to that crazy start and then got super cold. The underlying numbers are still mostly very good. The raw power, you know, the average type of velocity barrel rate is about average, but when you make as much contact as he does, I think it's gonna work. He pulls the ball in the air. I think chased a lotters an excellent hitter. And I think you're just solved a little bit of a slump. And even during the slump, the underlying number still fantastic. So I have not lost any faith in chased a lotter. I think he's awesome. The call to the bullpen for the Angels, Ryan Zepherjohn was going for the two innings save, but he allowed a game tying triple with two outs in the ninth inning. He took his first blown save and the angels would wind up losing in extras. I don't know who is, who will get the next save opportunity for the Angels? I legitimately don't know. Well, I mean, Drew Pomeran's came in after him and. Blue of the game. Yeah, Blue of the game walked three, I think. So it's probably not Drew Pomeran. Yeah, like I think it might be Zepherjohn still. I know, you know, the run that he allowed was if he in, he has a 551 ERA, but Drew Pomeran's has an ERA almost nine. And Zepherjohn's showing, he's missing bats. There's something there. I think you'd have to be pretty desperate to look into him, but a lot of people are desperate for saves right now. So I actually do think there might be something there. For the Guardians, Kate Smith picked up his seventh save for the twins, Eric Orzzy entered in the ninth with a one run lead. He was charged with three runs on two hits and two walks. He took his second blown save and first loss, twins bullpen complete mess. For the Mariners, Andres Munoz came on. He struck out two for his sixth save for the Marlins. Calvin Foshe got the ninth with a one run lead. He walked three, but managed to escape with the save. Big thank you to save your Edwards with an unassisted double play to end that game. Honestly, big thank you to Shohei O'Connie. That was, that was some bad base running. Yeah, and not great. Like why are you bringing the fielder back towards first base when you're going to get doubled up? Just run to him and then he at least has to make the throw. That was a weird play by Shohei O'Connie. Who would you rather have while P Fairbanks is out? Calvin Foshe or Tyler Phillips? Is it Tyler? I just make that up. It's Tyler. It is. That guy's insane by the way. Slash the shot in the face when he comes out of the fence. It's extremely normal, dude. Tyler Phillips. Yes. I guess I would lean Tyler Phillips. I think Foshe is, I want to say he's got like nine walks on the season. I mean, the Marlins bullpen as a whole has like a 16% walk rate right now. It's crazy. I don't want anyone there, but if I was just saying you're desperate enough to add Ryan Zepherjohn, then yeah, maybe Tyler Phillips too. I think you have to be pretty desperate either way. For the Cubs with a one run lead, Ben Brown recorded five outs across the eighth and ninth innings, and then it was lefty Hobie Milner who came on for the final out to pick up his first save. Feels like the Cubs are just going to piece it together until Daniel Polensia's back for the Cardinals. Riley O'Brien picked up his eighth save, but the final out was a fly ball right at the top of the wall in left field. So very narrowly escaped with that one. For the Tiger is Kenley Jansen got the ninth with a one run lead. He gave up a walk off to run Homer to Matt Olson. Kenley Jansen took his third blown save and second loss. I think that there is a decent leash here, decent leash with Kenley Jansen because of who he is and he's chasing history and all those types of things. But all of a sudden he's got a 614 ERA and a 164 whip. Kyle Finnegan has looked better. So just something to watch. I'm not saying it's close to happening, but if we get a few more rough outings from Kenley Jansen, it is a possibility. Man, I went and looked at the top 30 relievers in ADP. It was like 26 actually because some of them were starters. I took out everyone who has an ERA above 4.5. Everyone who's on the IL or everyone who has lost their job. And of the top 26, nine remain. And it's not like you're thrilled that you have Dennis Santana right now. No. I mean, David Bednar hasn't been like amazing. It's pretty bad. Kate Smith hasn't been very good. It's been a rough start. And then everyone else is hurt. So yeah. For the Rangers, Jacob Latt's pitched the final two innings with a three run lead to pick up his second save. He has the last two saves for the Rangers. Jacob Junis does not have a save since April 12th. Apparently, he dropped like $130 a fab on him. Yeah, I picked him up and tell it was for like $90. Apparently, Junis was warming up in the seventh inning of this game. Junis pitched the eighth inning in a loss on Tuesday. I kind of feel like it's moving towards Jacob Latt. I guess they could kind of mix and match still. But Junis's K-Rate is, I mean, it's 3.8 K-P9, which is almost impossibly low. So I don't do you just think it's like Jacob Latt's for an hour. Yeah.
- Tough thing is, who's the guy on the, there's someone on the A's who has a couple of multi-aning saves lately as well? - Jack Perkins. - Jack Perkins. - Jack Perkins. It's really hard to be a closer if you're working multiple-anings. It just doesn't really work that way, but maybe they switch to Lats being a single-inning reliever. I know he was a starter. Yeah, this is just another frustrating situation that I don't really want a part of. And this is why I hate relievers. To stream or not to stream on Thursday. Lance McCullors at the Orioles, Brandon Young, I can see Ashrose, Hunter Dobbins at the Pirates, Adrian Howzer at the Phillies. I believe Bailey Ober is facing the Blue Jays. And that was the lone name that Scott and I gave out yesterday. - Yeah, there are 11 games tomorrow, so it's surprising how many, how few options there are. - Wait, there might have been more added here. I'm looking. - Oh, 'cause there were two rain outs today, right? - Well, we gained Chris Bassett against the Ashrose. I don't think we like that. - Peter Lambert at Baltimore. He's not uninteresting, but he's risky for sure. - Yeah, I would probably say Ober or Lambert. - Yeah, yeah, yeah, that sounds right. - Not excitedly. I did not write down Friday, so we'll have to do this in the fly. Colin Rae gets the D-backs. Brady Singer is at the Pirates. - Yeah, Colin Rae, that's just like, check the, check the weather report a couple hours before the game, see if the winds blow in the internet, 'cause if it is, then he might be good. He actually gets a lot of ground balls. He's been pretty good. Over the last year, it's like a mid-3-ZRA or something, and it was last start was really bad. Yeah, I don't. Patrick Corbin is at the twin, Simeon Woods Richardson against the Blue Jays, Matthew Liboutori against the Dodgers, Christian Scott. - Does my Rose count as a streamer at this point? He might be that little roster, so I might go him at Boston. They've been pretty bad. - Yeah, I'm looking on MLB.com. They always have so many TBDs, man. - Yeah, it's annoying. I don't, yeah, there's not a lot of great options. Grant Holmes at Colorado, no, Christian Scott at the Angels with how bad he was in his last start, same with Robert Erainia. I think we're looking at a lot of nose. Our Momma Kez versus the White Sox in San Diego's not bad. - Yeah. - Mitch Keller against the Reds in Pittsburgh? - Yeah, I don't hate that. - Not terrible. So I would probably say Keller borrows and. - Maybe Ray. - Marques, maybe. - Yeah, Marques. - And Marcomi might just hit like three homers off the net. - I don't know about that one. We are gonna wrap there for Chris, I and Frank, thanks as always for tuning into fantasy baseball. Summary:
FAQs
Garrett Crochet was placed on the IL with left shoulder inflammation. He is confident he can return in the minimum 15 days, though shoulder issues can be tricky.
Yes, there is concern because shoulder inflammation is a symptom, not a diagnosis, and average IL stints for this issue are longer. His rest-of-season ranking has dropped to 15th among pitchers.
Consider adding Chase Dollander, J.R. Ritchie, Kyle Harrison, or Peyton Toli, who are widely available. Kade Cavalli is also a strong option after back-to-back double-digit strikeout starts.
It is advisable to sit Strider in daily lineup leagues because his first start is at Coors Field against the Rockies, making it hard to evaluate his performance.
Nolan Aranato is on a hot streak with a .404 average and 5 homers in 14 games, but his underlying metrics are poor. He is a risky hot-hand play in deeper leagues, but not a long-term solution.
Trevor Rogers was placed on the IL with an illness after three poor starts. He will get time to recover and hopefully improve his performance.
