(upbeat music) - What's up, everybody? Welcome to IJ in Game Scoop. I'm your host, Damien Hadfield. And joining me here in studio is Parrish Knighter. - I'm not your host, Parrish Knighter. - You're my co-host. - Thank you, thank you. - We're also joined by Sam Claiborne. - I'll answer your question. I don't know what's up. - And while you're about to find out, and Justin Davis, Scoop, all four of us who were just in Germany together at Gamescom, but somehow I was the only one out of this four that was able to scoop it up. (laughs) - I'm sorry. - Do you just do it by yourself? - Let me tell you what I think it's Damien's time. (laughs) - Finally, my moment. No, I did a two person scoop with Nick Lemone, and one of the comments was, two person scoop works surprisingly well. - Yep, well that's it. - Yeah, everybody else is gone. - Oh, in a pinch. We can make it work. - Anyway, I got a great show for this week. There's so many games, all of a sudden, I find myself with just a pile of games to play after kind of a quiet summer since 007 First Light. Now I've got Onimusha, the blood of Don Walker. I finally got Marvel Tocon. I really like Star Wars Zero Company. Talk about all that. Plus, there's this Grand Theft Auto 6 game coming that we actually haven't even gotten a chance to talk about that yet. I feel like we should at least. Gamescoop, the world needs to know what Gamescoop thinks about. You know, a lot of people are kind of on the fence about this game. They're waiting to hear what Gamescoop thinks about GTA VI. Well, finally, render our verdict on that. - Well, you just never know with like small Scottish indie studios when they work on something. - Yeah, it could be good though. - Could be good? I had a good feeling. But first, Sony held a state of play this morning. I'm not sure that they needed to, but I did. - No. - There was one. Not one of the better ones I don't think. - No. - Not a lot of things. - It's a state of play that could have been an email, which sounds weird where it's like, you know, obviously big. I just, like, I don't know, it's actually, I immediately regret saying that 'cause like, there's a lot of really big games on it. But I just, I don't need to see anything more from Final Fantasy, was it revelation? Is that what it's called? I just think that we've seen too much. Like, I don't need to see any more of it. - In a really short amount of time, we've seen it three times over the summer. - I think so, Sony was being respectful in not broadcasting this during Gamescom, right? There were not a Gamescom partner. And so it didn't counter-programme on like some other big company that was not a Gamescom. And so, I think the sort of adjacency to Gamescom, though made it a little bit of a post script, where it's like, we had seen Final Fantasy stuff. And so, you know, it just didn't have that impact. And we got released dates and we got some, you know, some games, some game announcements, some smaller stuff. So, yeah. - I can't believe we're complaining about this. - No, Tifa was in it. - Yeah, okay. Yeah, Tifa wasn't at all. - I thought the Final Fantasy stuff they shared was like, confirming the stuff that I was most interested to know. Like, what is an open world with an airship like in 2027? It's pretty cool. - Turns out it's sick. - Yeah, I love that. - Yeah, it's completely tears of the kingdom coded. - I said, awesome. - Yeah, but the thing is like, it's a Sony state of play. So, you kind of want to see, like we just saw this last week. So, we kind of want to see some first party stuff that's coming out. That's the, I think that's the reason why. - Is there first party stuff coming out? There's a gotta word game in February. - Yeah, gotta for intergalactic is some people. We're holding out hope. I mean, some people are like, oh, maybe it'll be here. It was not. And then, you know, look, they're Wolverine to the general consumer. Like, they might still be very hungry to see more stuff about that one. - I mean, I think people feel about Wolverine. Like, people feel about Final Fantasy, which is like, just give me the game already. Which is surprising. That's already happening with Final Fantasy. But not when you think about it. It is like, what, a 15 year journey, right? It's like, we do know what to expect from Final Fantasy, except for a few little things. I'm glad they showed that. But yeah, I mean, state of play, like, it's always nice when there's just one more thing. And even better when there's just three more things. Some of the recent state of plays that really work show a bunch of like crazy cool Japanese action games. - The one earlier in this year was great. That one in like February or whatever, when they showed the new Kina, they unveiled Castlevania. I don't know, that was a good one. - Yeah, and there's like that Stellar Blade sequel we want to know more about. There's a bunch of spooky season games coming out. Like, there's a bunch of things that like could have been in this that weren't. And then there's also like, you know, is there ever going to be an uncharted game ever again and stuff like that? Which is perpetually the question you want answered by a Sony stream. - Also, this is just a time when everyone's kind of down on PlayStation, you know, it's like, I mean, like, they have this whole thing happening with physical media. People don't feel great about it. They aren't excited about the brand. People are excited about games they can play on their PlayStation, but there isn't a lot of love for the PlayStation brand right now. So they have this big opportunity to do something about that. And I think they kind of squander it. - Yeah, look, I mean, some of the big stories for PlayStation gamers were definitely covered by the prior week, right? Like, Grand Theft Auto 6 is allegedly best on PlayStation 5, right? And so that's what everybody in PlayStation fandom is going to be talking about for the next couple of months and certainly in November. And then something like the Witcher 3 getting a remaster that we're most definitely also going to be playing on our PlayStation says also big news for fandom, but all of that was already blown out by Gamescom, right? - We've had a good couple of weeks for game news and showing games, so like all in all, it's really nice. It's just, this wasn't the punctuation mark that I think we wanted on the end of that. There's still always Nintendo Direct in September. So, well, they have a game that nobody's seen. So, you know, there's an actual anticipation for it. - Yeah, that's crazy, right? Like, this game that's coming out this fall, we haven't seen barely anything. I've just a little CG trailer. - Wait, would you show it off to a leg? - Right, no, it's the screen. - Oh, yeah, that's, yeah. We talked about this last week. - What? - Just the Ocarina, they haven't, they've been really quiet about it. And then they just had this huge marketing beat. I would like, build a big Ocarina booth for Gamescom. We're three, it was like 380,000 people attended this year. - Wow. - Yeah. - I mean, just, I was really hoping for that. And then some of the companies that came through with their booth builds were amazing. Like the Tomb Raider Dinosaur. - Yes, it was awesome. - And it was awesome. - The Gamescom was so cool this year. - Xbox was incredible. They had all these little dioramas of, like, old vintage Xbox rooms and different areas of Xbox. And then you could take a picture of yourself and it would put you inside the diorama. It was really cute. - I met with the-- - If they just had the Warthog alone, I would have been impressed. That was huge. - I met with the folks that let you drive it. - At Kernmessa and at Game, the two organizations that put on the show and they were completely surprised, like super pleasantly surprised with the quality of the booths. Like this was a huge upgrade over previous years. And so many good-looking booths. - It felt like the old E3 days. - And people can go to it. Because when the best height of E3 was happening, it was not open to the public. And I think it's really cool to see this. And they somehow handle it with lines and everything. - This 'cause the place is so big and there's so much to do. I was really impressed with like kind of the marketing of video games feeling cool in old school. - I'm confused by this video. These are a bunch of different horrors. - Where are all these Tomb Raiders? - Cosplayers. - A cosplay meter. - Yeah. - 368,000 people went to this event. - Yeah, it's good. - And that's not counting the people out in the party in the streets. - Oh yeah, most of them were Tomb Raiders. - Most of them were Tomb Raiders. Anyway, Final Fantasy VII revelations finally coming on April 8th. - Yeah, that's good date. - Got a good date. - It's an interesting date. You know, there's a, this is why. You know this game, Exodus. It's this sci-fi RPG from former Mass Effect devs. That launches April 7th. - What? - April 9th, my birthday. So you guys can give me the game early. - Okay, a few in Japan. - Yeah. - It's like a trend of like, there's a game like Mass Effect. I mean, yeah, 'cause this week we got a game like the Witcher. - Yeah. - From former Witcher devs, yeah. - Yeah, yeah. - I think Exodus is like a dark court. I really like, I mean, I really like Gamescom for a lot of reasons, but one of the reasons that I like it is there really is an element of sort of like King Maker at this show where games can come out of Gamescom with like more hype and more buzz and like they've revealed the world. Like, D&D Warlock was like that. - Yes. - I've never enjoyed it was like that. - Yeah, I don't know. - It's like that every launch. - I don't know. - Yeah, it did. - You had a fine launch. - But never like a 1.0 launch. - No, it's early access. - Yeah, yeah, no, that's right. - I just think Exodus, I like new IP. You know, I like things that's not the 10th sequel we've got in a franchise and like this is such a strong element of like, if BioWare is not going to do it, this, you know, another company will do it. Like fine, we'll just make our own Mass Effect. - Yeah, that's cool. - Then it's fine. I'll do it myself. - Yeah, exactly, like, and it looks, you know, Indy Studio, you know, new IP, like we'll see whether it can deliver on that promise, but like everything they're showing off so far is, looks great. - I agree, but now that it's coming the day before Final Fantasy VII. - Yeah. - Oh, yeah. - This guy was like second up. - They're gonna be May 7th or March 7th. - They're gonna move. But April, an April date for Final Fantasy is wonderful because everybody stuck that game in February. Right, like they're the first exact- - Oh yeah, you're so crowded. - Yeah, that's true. - I'm happy that we got our first, like, other big April game out of this. - Yeah. - Did you guys see if he has a little grappling hook? It's pretty cool. - That is cool. - Vertical level there. - Yep. - I liked those GJ6 controllers, the PS5 controllers. I would get one if it's easy, if I could just buy one.
and not have to go through any hoops, I would give 'em. - See, I guess it's 20, it's 20, 20, 16, and it doesn't work that easily. - Not easy by hard times. - I got the 007 one, so I'm like, - Okay. - controller it out. - Okay, all right, you're good. - Well, when did you ever say that about amiibo though? I got this amiibo, so I'm amiiboed out. - Well, no, I have to be able to complete. I'm waiting on the Resident Evil ones right now. - Anyway, these controllers-- - I heard that they're gonna go digital only with their controllers after this generation. - Yeah, that's hilarious. (laughing) - You just have to use your phone and on-screen buttons - On your iPhone. - Yeah, you well, or you just wave your hands around like an idiot, we went through that. - Connect. - We did. - Xbox on. - You just turned one Xbox on, somewhere in Brazil. - God damn it. - Like in a cafe in Brazil where it's still hooked up for the kids. - No, I didn't, because I would have had to say eight or nine more times. - That's right. - Yeah, that's true. - Good times. - Genuinely, the announcement from the state of play that was the most exciting for me was man-eater too. - Oh, yeah, I said. - Yeah, man-eater too. - That first game is totally fun. It's like-- - Yeah. - If you haven't played it, it's a-- - Yeah, it's a shark game. - You're the shark. - They call it a shark PG. - Shark PG. - Shark PG. - Because as you eat, you get bigger and you evolve and you get electricity powers that can shoot lightning out of your mouth and it's great. - Yeah, it was like echo the dolphin a little bit with teeth. - Yeah. - It looks good too, like I just like the vibe of this is like a sea world kind of resort thing. It's really cool. - We just don't get a lot of, I don't know if they announced a price for this yet, but like we just, these kind of $40, $50 games, they're just, you know, they're just underrepresented in the market of just like it is what it is. And it's not trying to be more and you're gonna play it and have a good time. - It's got a lot of jumps. - Yeah, I know. (laughing) - Yeah, people eat other sea creatures, it's great. - Yeah, and the fact that it's in this amusement park kind of gives it a Jaws 3D vibe. - Yeah, totally. - Why would you watch that? - When I was a, yeah, I watched it. - I think it's just one of those movies that I watched any time I was on TV and I was a kid. - All I remember from that one is that the shark when it swims, sometimes it doesn't move. It's just like a little boat like (laughing) it has an amazing, oh, I can't together their name, some small studio. - Yup. - Not Apple G, but something like that. - Yeah, it's a map. - Anyway, that looks fun. I will play that. - My computer's locked up. - What was the other thing? Oh yeah, there's Ghost of Yote. - Oh yeah. - Complete edition. - Yeah, there's a complete edition. So it includes the most wanted mode. It's a single player, combat survival, roguelike mode. That brings back gin from Tsushima. That looks fun. - Sick. - The combat in the game is super fun. - I love the game. - I love the game. - Yeah, I'll play that. - And that's coming out October 1st. - I'll be so bad at the content. - Oh, well, yeah. (upbeat music) (upbeat music) - Imagine setting your makeup, then forgetting it's even theirs. Meet new groupie setting mist from Mavily New York. Maybe it's Mavily. - Should I play the blood of the Don Walker, comma, the blood of Don Walker? - The blood of Don Walker. - Starts with the the. - Yeah, play. - Do you like the Witcher? - I'm a huge Witcher fan. - I was gonna do only Moussa first, but Joe, we can just talk the blood of Don Walker first. - It's got a nine out of 10 from IGN.com. - Yeah, but then one school panel member was like talking crap about it. - Who, no, who was? - I, me. - You were? - Yeah, I think the first part of this game is so bad. I mean, obviously it becomes a fun game, but like, if that intro is unbelievable, like you, you didn't wanna go fishing? - You have a dream, you chase a girl, you wash a witch, you hit on her heavily, you learn Latin, then you ignore a bunch of side quests and then the stuff happens. The, I like the idea of like, in the Carpathians, these vampires are running a town and it's scary. Like, that's all good. I just don't think it's conveyed very well. But once you're out, like, zooming around and clawing people and stuff, it's pretty fun. - But you also had some frame rate issues, right? Like, the game's getting a 60FPS patch. - So, turn it on performance. If you're playing this on console, put it on performance, it looks totally like the textures look good still. It just, without it being on performance, it's just awful, awful looking game. And performance, it just looks like the Witcher. - Yeah, I just thought, I just thought the beginning of it. - I'm so glad it turned out well. I mean, you know that our IGN reviewer liked it. It just, it really struck me, it's like, oh, a former Witcher devs are making a Witcher, like, and it's like, okay, we'll see. Like, it had six out of 10 or seven out of 10 written all over it. And so the fact that they actually kind of like, delivered and it just, it makes me really happy. Like, I'm just so glad. - And it's 100% gonna play it. I was really anxious to hear like, the whole game's conceit is this 30-day time limit, and that stressed me out. - Yes, yep, they handled it in a far way. - They handled it in a smart way, right? Where like, it's not an actual time limit. You have unlimited time to play the game, but when you take actions like complete quests or level up or this and that, that pushes it forward. - That advances time and so it's like, it's a persona. - It's like, there's also a breath of the wild element to it because you can complete the game by doing the main mission at any time. So what you're doing is build, like you're choosing which things you're going to build before taking that on. And you can, it has a time limit on that, but like, you're basically doing as much as you can to build your character to take on that quest and make it easier, but you can go right to it. - I remember by the way, when Pikmin came out, everybody was so mad about the time limit, and then Pikmin took him out. Everybody's so mad that the time limit was gone. - I don't, I don't remember the second one. The time limit in Pikmin's terrible. - It is annoying, I agree too. - This is more like, nobody created pressure, right? Like it made it a little bit tensor. And so I like that, I like that, and granted, I haven't played Blood of the Dawn Markle yet, but I'm glad that it's not actually time pressure, but it's just decision pressure, right? You can complete this quest and help this guy, but it's gonna take up, you know, it's gonna advance time. And so you have to choose whether you wanna do it or not. And like, that makes me a lot more intrigued and interested than I would have been. It's more like there's like 500 things to do in the game, and you can do 100 of them, that's your allotment. And so that builds your character, how you choose those. And that's smart, right? So then there's like the vampire stuff is really funny. Like you can accidentally chew people up because you have like this flash of vampirism and it takes when your dialogue options, when you're like skipping through dialogue and all of a sudden you just eat your friend. It's pretty funny. And then there's like also if you're just like walking around and you need to like rebuild your life, you just like tackle a goat. - Are there swearwolves in the game? - There's big mountain goat people. - Okay, fair. - Yeah. - And pair spoiler alert, but you become a vampire. - Yeah, no, I figured that one. - And so there's kind of like two different play styles. You're like during the day, you're like using your sword and magic and then at night you're a vampire and you use your claws and it's like you have two builds that you can build out. - Thanks for bringing this up though. I still have PTSD from Elder Scrolls not knowing there was vampirism in the game and then waking up one day and being a vampire. Oh my God. - That sucked, man. - That was really funny. - Yeah. - Yeah. - Also as a side note, there's a whole quest about this And dungeon crawler Carl about vampirism book five that I just went through right now. - Oh really? - Yeah. - Good stuff. - So I should play this. - So hot right now. - I should play this then. - You should play. - I'm trying to wrap. - I'm trying to do the blood of the dog. - No, the only one though. - The blood of the dog. - I'm joking. - There's only one, the blood of the dog. - I know. We have a daily trivia quiz on IGN. If you go to IGN, I can click in the left nav and click on trivia or game scope, which Justin is curating wonderfully, I might say. The trivia, one of the trivia questions in the upcoming days is, is the blood of the dog. - Is it the blood of the dog or the dog? - Yeah. By the way, the same thing happened with the Wind Waker and all of that people got very confused. - Oh right. - There's nothing changed. It's just Wind Waker, right? Oh, there is a though. The Legend of Zelda, Wind Waker. - Correct. It's also not the Ocarina of Time. - Nope. - It is just Ocarina of Time. - Yes. - It's not too much. - Do you like the Scan Damien? - Yeah. I do like it. - Yeah. - I've only spent a couple of evenings with it, but yes. - Sam did the same thing and the IGN guides Chad Chamoware. He like crapped on it and then everybody went, "What? No, we love it." - Just like-- - So Skyners, it's the same internally at IGN. It's the same. - But the takes from that team work, you know, backwards like I'm at the end of the game and coded, whereas like it's a legit criticism of the game that like it really is bad at the start. Like it's really bad. - I don't think it's bad, but it is a little bit of a slow ramp up. - I mean. - That's a kid. - That's not his haircut alone. - It can't be worse than Crimson Desert. - Although that got, dude, I so, like I'm such a DLT. - Yeah. - Well, that was a nice release to the story. - Like, I'm sorry, I'm gonna hijack the show for a second, but before the DLC, it's like they released the story patch of like we fixed the story, we changed it. And like I'm so curious.
I'm so curious because it's like did you like did you really fix it like because it was bad so bad before sure about that And so like I want to start it over but then I'm also looking at all the video games that are out right now and I'm like Oh, I can't I can't it's gonna have to wait till Christmas break. I think yeah Yeah, that's okay. I still don't know. I'm still so curious about crimson desert have I still not played it but I'm curious But then there's also this like I said there's us another pile of games. I did you look more content in it before you started Because they're adding more content to it. I early on decided I'm gonna wait and like I you know like people said Yeah, it's it's rough. It has really cool elements. You'll love it and then you won't like it I'm like I'm I have time. I have so much to play. I'm gonna wait on this game. I will definitely eventually play it and I bet it's gonna be awesome One of these days yep The game that I'm playing the most right now is only mooshit Which got a 10 from my jam. Yeah, it's my it's my first only mooshie. I've never played Oh, an only mooshie before I never played them either. I played the original really yeah But this is the first mainline only motion in 20 years Anyway, if you're like me if you're aren't sure what this is it's not Resident Evil that's let they're like cinematic Action adventure at least this one is a cinematic action adventure game. It's story play, but it's not hack and slash you have to be very deliberate combat relies heavily on Timing Perry's Deflections you want to break the enemies stamina and perform executions There isn't stealth, but if you get if you walk up behind someone most enemies you can Assassinate them with one kill and a lot easier than sacred sacred. Well, at least in the beginning It's not souls. Yeah, it's not souls like yeah at all and in fact It has really cool bosses like big cool boss designs, but it operates it follows the Damon Hatfield rule of three Which is that I should not have to fight a boss more than three times. Oh, okay And so far so far so good. Okay. It's good Oh, it just does commit the cardinal sin though of I get the boss's health down to zero and then it Free fills completely like the next phase. Yeah, whatever if you want to have another phase build it into their their their life bar Don't let take it down to zero and then fill it all the way up again. It's just but it's talking with your emotions Does he at least get out like a little a little bottle and go swix-wix-wix and the socket brings it back? Yeah It's almost exactly like that. Perfect. Well, I like that. That's that's a that really happens in Japan You would know how it's real like how does Capcom keep doing this? You know, it's funny that you mentioned that Justin because we're gonna check in with the listeners right now. Oh, hey, that's nice Listeners remember you can always reach us at the email address
[email protected] Just like Tony from Omaha, Nebraska did not big Tony style regular Tony regular Tony regular Tony style did I was made Justin do a spittic Yep, Tony ready Regular Tony says Capcom is put out in my opinion three of the best games of the year in Resident Evil, Requiem, Pragmata and Onimusha Uh, I can't remember the last time this many quality games came out of the same developer that I was completely hyped on except for maybe 2017 when Breath of the Wild Mario Cart 8 and Mario Odyssey came out. Yeah, I have two questions first do any of the mega cops have any favorite overall years of gaming I know there's been some great ones 1998 comes to mind Second, what is the secret that Capcom has to making great games year after year that most other publishers just don't It's kind of crazy that they can put out this many quality games when so many others take years to put out one or two Okay, so the first question years. Yeah, 1998 is pretty good because that's awkward of time I think that's fine. Yeah half-life Metal Gear Solid, Starcraft, Resident Evil 2, Tekken 3, Banja Kazooie and Pokemon Red and Blue Thing 1981 that's the height of a amazing arcade game civilization. It was like 2001 was a really good year with 2001 is Grand Theft Auto 3, Halo, Metal Gear Solid 2, Super Smash Brothers, Melee, Phon, Fantasy 10, Silent Hill 2, Tony Hawk 3, and the only trickie That's 2001, okay 2007 is often cited. Yeah, you guys yeah, I feel like you guys are peaking over my shoulder at my dock 2007 would just buy a shot Bad shot portal Super Mario Galaxy, Modern Warfare, Halo 3, Mass Effect, Orange Box, God of War 2, Uncharted and Crisis. Yeah Yep, did you say Halo 3? Halo 3, yeah, and then 2026, Damon. This year, I would say is Grand Theft Auto 6 and Barbie Horse Adventure. Now, what is it called? Barbie something time loop? Barbie Rewind Okay there you go. Barbie Rewind. Yeah, Rewind. There's Barbie Rewind and GTA Well, I think it is worth mentioning 2023 was Baldur's Gate 3, Tears of the Kingdom, Alan Wake 2, Resident Evil 4, Remake, Street Fighter 6, Mario Wonder and Cyberpunk Phantom Liberty. That wasn't it. That's probably the most recent Yeah, the year of that caliber. Well, but the other question is how does Capcom do it when seemingly no one else can? How does Capcom do it? It's like why does how can Christopher Nolan just say I'm only going to make good movies when other people don't Why doesn't someone else should try it? Just make good movies. Well, it's they're engine, right? They all use the RE engine like they have the need to engine. Yeah And I don't I mean this is praise not criticism, but like the games are all they'll play like they're all super different like Park Mata and Resident Evil and Oni Mousha like they're not that you don't know these all feel the same But like you know the way your character moves through the world and the way that the camera works and the way that the environment's created it's like they just figured out this pipeline and they have the engine that like it's just working for them perfectly. I hope they I also think they're I mean they're very sort of they're They don't chase trends as much like a lot of a lot of publishers say hey, you know life service games are a thing We need to play in that realm. They may they obviously make a lot of money for certain companies And so we need to figure out how to how to have a hit like that and that can lock a studio down for years to try something that ultimately doesn't work out Um, but yeah like Capcom I think just figure it out how to make a certain type of game and stick true to its roots It's like the Yakusa team is similar where we constantly ask the Ryuga go koto go team right like where we go like How do they make that many games and like they don't suck right um and they and they have other life service moments the uh I mean obviously monster hunter is a really successful one Um, but what's what's the game that they did that what they started off in the snow with a grappling hook lost planet Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, they did two and three were like weird live servicing anthem like games Yeah, but whatever the case like Capcom is is absolutely like Using a design philosophy where they actually care about like a hook and a quality level and it's a lot like contendo It's like when you hear shigerami metal talking about games. It's like But what's the core of this game and what makes it fun and some they have enough people there that they're enforcing that and like finding This path through through like these like you know games that are um, they just have this like some kind of loop that like really draws you in I just think I really think about that and implement it Monsterger is a good example because they didn't I mean it's life service But they basically said we are going to create a communal hunt hunting experience game where you hunt giant monsters And it's centered around this four player co-op mode and they stuck true to that they stuck true to that vision They didn't make a hero shooter out of it. They did do some spin-offs right like and monster hunter stories is also good um Yeah, I don't know. I think it's just a well-run Smart team that focuses on making the games that they probably love to play themselves. Yeah Yeah, whatever they did since lost planet and resident evil five They you know like they really got it got together it began in 2017. Yeah with resident evil Seven. Yeah, I think so that's almost a 10-year renaissance now Yeah, I mean the thing that makes me excited about owning mousha This wouldn't normally be a Justin game, but there was a oh, I wish I could give them critics I don't remember what critic now, but someone else that reviewed the game described it as um Like the act of like pressing a button and swinging a sword has like never felt better They just figure out like that feeling of like how it feels and the timing of it in the weight of it and like You know, they put as much kind of emphasis and attention on that moment as like Nintendo did on Mario's jump Yeah, and so that really like that sold me on like even though this isn't normally my kind of thing I'm like, well, okay, like I you know, maybe I need to be into this after all and give it a try Yeah, I forgot to mention that I blood of Don Walker kind of like intimidates you by being like Well, everything you do is a sword stroke up left, right or down and then there's also a defensive block upright left or down But and then they're like and you have to watch this little arrow and this little shield has to turn red But it's like it's forgiving enough that you like kind of kick butt immediately in it like it feels really good Did you feel that way Damon? It took I think it takes some going to use to like the direct show blocking you have to block to the left or right and it just takes a really successful and And kicking enemies butts though when you get it right like it's like if the reward is incredible for it I thought it was really cool. Yeah, but I'll say about other deaths. I mean obviously Sony's got studios like Naughty Dog We we've gotten great Naughty Dog games all in a row. We've gotten great spider-man games We've gotten great ghost off you'll take But like you know Capcom Capcom is not just one dev team They might all be called Capcom something Nintendo gave us platoon Raiders and Star Fox and like these are all really cool
The best Fire Emblem and Ocarina of Time. It's like Capcom has scaled to a place where they have a bunch of great development teams and they're all making great games. I wish Konami was doing that, right? I wish there was other companies. Yeah. This is the point I wanted. Yeah, it's the weirdest one. Yeah. It's the origin and it's the pipeline, like Justin said. They have multiple teams working on multiple games at the same time and they set up this roadmap. So in this year alone, they have the latest entry in the long running Resident Evil series. They have something new with Pragmata. They bring back Onimushi after 20 years and then already next year, they have the next Resident Evil coming and they're bringing back Mega Man. So they just have it all planned out. The difference is that Naughty Dog, who has not released a single new game, this entire generation, they're about four to 500 people and Capcom is 3,700 employees. So it's just a much bigger operation. Yeah, but then, you know, there's some remakes in a TV show of that remakes. Yeah, but when Naughty Dog is busy cooking and they're a little bit more like a rock star, right, where they take a very long time and they, I mean, the stuff Naughty Dog sometimes does in their games is insane, right? When in a Capcom game, somebody sits down at a campfire, you know, like they sit down and then the campfire is lit in the next scene. There's a cutscene in a Naughty Dog game. There's somebody like lighting the match and like the woods will start burning. It's like it's a different sort of detail level. But when Naughty Dog is cooking, we get an astro bot, right? Like it's not like Naughty Dog, huh? Not for Naughty Dog. Not for Naughty Dog. Okay, so I think you just hate Naughty Dog, yeah. Sure. They have a portfolio of devs and Capcom has different teams that alter creating games now. Well, they definitely scope their games appropriately, right? Like, you know, Pregmata, how long to beat says the game is 12 hours or like, you know, 16, if you want to do most of the side stuff. Like that's like an appropriate, like, you know, you're not going to play it and feel short change to be like, oh, you know, I'm bummed and this wasn't a good value for money, but it's also not, you know, they're not trying to do, like just the game is budgeted appropriately. Like, you know, they've scoped the project to be just right. Dreamcast, Aerosaga was like this. Where you got, you got actually surprisingly different games where like, you know, a jet grind radio would follow a crazy taxi or something, right? Mm-hmm. Yep. Maybe they'll come back with that too. Whereas like, Square was always slower and deliberate and really stupid game like every year too, right? Like, there's always been these two examples of development. But I just think Capcom and Nintendo are like these really healthy examples of the Japanese game industry. And I hope that means if there's like other people that will, like, as Damon always says, like, just do that, you know, because it just feels good to have these like, pillars of Japanese, like, awesome game culture again. It feels great. Yep. I'm hoping Konami will come back in some way. But they seem like they are. They seem like they will take the seriously. They had an awesome piece walker display. There's stuff everywhere. They had a huge Castlevania booth. How is there a Castlevania, a 2D Castlevania booth in 2026? That's awesome. I remember E3 Castlevania on display where they shot fire out of the booth and it was so loud. Wow. We couldn't hear anything like up into the sky. Like, cool. Cool. Cool. The last thing I wanted, there. That's the booth, the Castlevania. It's awesome. It's thrown. And they're, that's probably on its way to TGS right now. I think TGS is this week. Yeah. Oh, that's cool. Yeah. The last thing I wanted to say about Onimoshie is some of the best facial animation I've ever seen. And the hero, they've licensed the lightness of Toshiro Mufune. Oh, cool. Which, well, I don't know how I feel about it, actually. Toshiro Mufune is like the best-known Japanese samurai actor. He was in-- Who's dead? Right. He's been dead for 30 years. He's been in, probably 200 films, but he's most known for his-- the Kurosawa films that he's seen. Yeah. Seven samurai. And Damon, even though we-- I mean, I named my first born son after the director Kurosawa Akita. And a lot of those movies were flops. They were financial flops. So it's the family. Oh, sure. Mufune is getting something out of it now. That's wonderful. I don't know. I'm an amazing actor, but he is an amazing actor. You know, likenesses are troubling. Yeah, I just don't know. It's weird. Like, maybe he's not-- He's not mad about it, Damon. I know, but he's not mad about it. Like I said, I love this game, and I love that actor, but I just don't know how to feel about these likenesses of long dead people. Other companies just steal his likeness and say it's a different dude. And at least they're paying the family. I think there was a-- Now, I think there was a Netflix anime that-- Yeah, but it's a make-a-new guy. Make-a-new dude. No, you can make a new dude. No, he's not cool as a guy, is it already? He's like the coolest dude of all time. He is the guy. You don't need to. If anyone doesn't know, Toshira Mufune, you should watch some of the seven samurai, Yujimbo, the Stomach, he's just the coolest dude of all time. Red beard. [THEME MUSIC] Speaking of Japanese stuff, I also finally got Marvel Tokon. And that seems good. OK. It seems good. I'm not like a serious fighting guy, but it has a single-player story mode. Yeah. You play through these graphic novels, and they use art from some Japanese manga artists. It's cool to see all that Marvel superheroes and a manga style. It's cool. I mean, it feels good. It's some of the best depictions of Marvel characters I've ever seen. Yeah. Marvelous Capcom was also one of my very favorite-- just like make Marvel characters look cool. Yeah. It looks so cool. These characters look so cool. Yeah, it's a variation. Just a cool presentation. Lots of fun stuff to do in the single-player story mode. And Kingo has been-- he loves to just do training, because the opponent doesn't fight back. So he just picks different characters and figures out what he can do with them. And that's pretty well. He's actually-- I think that's more-- --figured out so many moves on his kid. If I played against him, he'd probably-- I don't know. He'd probably-- at least give me a run for my money. The point we're at when we game together is in Smash Brothers. I can beat him. But I have to try. Oh, OK. It's not easy. I have to actually try. That's pretty cool. They had a Tocon booth build at Gamescom. And it was a giant apocalypse-themed Egyptian mutant-- the first mutant set. It was really cool. Wait, would this be an Arc System Works booth? Because PlayStation was it there. I don't know. That's where I missed it. You'll get the most important shark. Jeff, is that the shark's name? Jeff, the babyland shark. Yeah. Damon, you'll get to a point where your kids are going to be two out of games. Oh, it's any day now. I know what this is. I like-- there's certain games. I can still take them in Mario Kart, but my daughter destroys me in Splatoon games like that. Yeah. Yeah. [MUSIC PLAYING] OK, and that can bring us to Grand Theft Auto 6, which we got the big deep dive on Netflix last week. I watched it. I think it looks pretty good. It looks pretty good. We got to watch that as a team on a big screen in Germany. It was very late at night there, and it was really fun. It was like 9 p.m. Yeah, well, it felt late, because we'd been up since 4 a.m. Actually. Yeah, 4 a.m. Good covering, the damn event. And jet lagged. But yeah, it was really exciting to do that. And here are people call out stuff as they notice things. But also just presentationally, it felt like an engrossing, cool, 30 minutes to watch. It was actually a fun way to deraid a presentation of gameplay. I love how they handled it. In the end, you're like, oh, no, I want to see more. I want it to keep going. Any other company would have had a voiceover being like, welcome to Vice City. In Vice City, you can do this in Vice City. Yeah, and they would explain every gameplay element. It's just sort of fun to watch this. Like how cinematic and movie-like it is. What I really love is a lot of games nowadays do the 18 thing, where you wreak havoc and destruction and then the guy crawls out of the car and is like, oh, no, he's OK. It's totally fine, right? The Marvel movies always do this, where it's like, mayhem, but somehow nobody died and the superheroes are OK. There's a plot point where that's not the case. But in this game, they just show you doing bad things. I mean, there are robbing places. They're just capping people left and right. They're stealing cars and all that. And the police come in at one point and just kill everybody and meet you like, what? And even though you don't need to know these characters, you're instantly on their side still. You know, like, I feel like I want to play this game. I love these characters. I love the way the world looks and how reactive it is in general. Yeah, I like these characters a lot. It solves one of my main problems with GTA Vs. But those three main characters never stopped arguing that whole game. I was really sick of it. Now these characters, I can see just like-- It's like Game Scoop. You felt like you were just watching an episode of Game Scoop. What are you talking about? No, Game Scoop is more like Jason and Lucia, all of us. Oh, OK, OK. I think they're great characters. They're so well characterized, even in just the little 25 minutes. And some people are sort of like, oh, Jason's just plank a wood like he's exploring. I'm like, he's clearly-- he's an introvert. Yeah, he's an awkward introverted dude and Lucia's in the driver's seat. And like, if you rewatch that with like that in mind, you'll see so many-- like the opening moment is like the guy says first door on the right. And then they walk to the first door on the right in Jason's like this door, right? Like, he's immediately always like checking, you know, for approval. And so I think that they're both written with like so much. Like, the game is so unsuddle, but also so subtle and kind of mature in its storytelling and its presence.
in a lot of ways and like that's a real that's a real tricky tightrope to walk that they that they manage to do is like How are you telling this kind of like? deeply kind of like you know mature and like personal story and then it's also just so loud and silly in the Bureau that we're watching right now is just the the really on the nose parody of the commercials that are in the game I'm like they do both they straddle that line so well and then the confidence in the characters goes down to you You see scenes where we see where's a wig and she will you wear a wigs with will you wear a wigs? Yeah, same way as a wig and then like different clothes the entire time, which is like it used to be that your character in order to be Recognizable had to have the same clothes always right like Mario is like a certain color scheme or link is And in this they they just they have so much confidence in their characters and you being able to understand who's who that they show you Just constant costume changes and hair style changes. Yeah, Sam and I were talking about that. It's it's Lucia appears almost different and almost every scene Yeah, I just wonder if that's like the customization of the show, but she's a gangster too, right? Like it makes sense. Yeah Yeah, I think it's great and it does show the customization and they're probably doing that with Jason too But you just can't tell because he's always just some like big dude. He's like, oh, but we we're dressing him in his Hawaii You know 5/0 outfit today, but it's like everything they were clearly pretending to be professionals at one point and they all dressed up, right? Like yeah, I think that's fine. That was great But like even just like looking at them driving around like right now like it looks so good And it was captured on a base ps5. I had I can't believe my launch ps5 is going to be able to do this. Yeah. Yep Yep, they're they're just like like there's no like on the one hand This is the most impressive video game we've ever seen But then it's also kind of like it's less impressed like there's no secrets or shortcuts It's just this is what unlimited time and unlimited money Gets you is just even like you don't need to care about open-world games or just the one-handed prime games Yeah, Lucia one handed like talking to shotgun. It's so good. It's just so effortlessly cool, right? Yeah Just even if this isn't your thing at all just from a standpoint of like commercial art is just there's never been anything like this Of just thousands of people working on something for a decade So it's like I'm intrigued by this as a as a product just on that level and then I you know I do like the GTA games a lot So it's like yeah, obviously I can enjoy it in a more kind of straight-up way as well So my favorite shot in the whole presentation is when they just showed this like two seconds of like gliding through the ever glades To areas and it's like a really clear water. You can see a manatee off to the right It's like on a there's a hovercraft and you know, that's what they didn't show in this right is that they they showed a bunch of like um a kind of high-stee stuff getaways driving conversational moments story different moments relationship moments And then it's all set in this you know guaranteed to be incredible open-world. That's not only in a city. It's like Also, two underwater. I mean they show just yeah and oh shit just to do like oh yeah by the way you scuba dive right like yeah, yeah That's that's what's so exciting is that they they can't possibly you all these other games were like Well, I don't need to see more of this just give me the game like I understand that like for this though Like I'll never see everything in this game Yeah, I'm never gonna see it all Usually you have to pick between like you know Why does an ocean or shallow as a puddle right whereas like GTA is like why does an ocean and deep as an ocean like It's just it like the most gigantic world but also the deepest level of detail and also like the new rumors like 700 interiors of like buildings you can go inside. It's just it's crazy like the hair physics are crazy I'm like I said, I don't want to diminish like the the artistry on display is incredible But it is it is just time it's just time and manpower and money and no AI and they just did it like there's no shortcuts Just take the time to do it. It's unbelievable. Yeah, and it's also capturing like a it feels modern and Referential to our time in a way where they had to make those decisions 10 years ago To make it feel that way. Yeah, yeah, which is like makes it even more impressive But that's because it's an amalgamation of crime movies right so it's got all that going for it And then it's also a parody of let's face it America. Yeah, right? And America has a lot of like consistency to it And it's you know like gas stations and guns and and driving. It's very funny how that's that's emphasized I know it's funny that the most American game comes out of Scotland too Yeah, but I mean it gives them a distance and a perspective where they can do the parody right no They said in the in in an interview rockstar did wouldn't you know they did their press last week or whenever it was I like they had a team of people that were embedded and lived in Miami and like just a research team like that's all dated They said they spoke to criminals and spoke to gang members and spoke to police and everyone like they just did it Like because that's how how else do you make it authentic? You know um and and then they also talked about the slang Like they they really have to thread the needle between being current But without without being too current right they it needs to have a little bit more of a timeless feeling It actually gives me chills to think about a game like this coming out this year and a couple months Like it's so exciting. Yeah, I know you know And it's I'm kind of a daunting time. It's like that. Thanks. It's like right before that Thanksgiving week where Typically people get some time off, but yeah, it's gonna be a lot to there's gonna be a lot of work to do with this game I think yeah, that's that's true Plus we have to finish Castlevania Yes, let's see we're here for Christmas break. I'm gonna finish it during Christmas break, I'm sure yeah That's always a fun. I mean those are that's also just a nice like Knob to all of our like cultural pasts is that like there's just like this big game that you're gonna play from like Thanksgiving to Christmas Yeah, like we all did that for a green of time, you know, and it's like it's it's really fun to think about that release window I think like an underrated part of GTA that I'm excited about is again We're like seeing more details as like as some influencers went to go see it too So like there's an IG and you know Rachel Weber got to go see the game and we're so we're just learning more and more as those details trickle out and like it does sound like The story is gonna be more kind of player driven or like at some point it sounds like the story is like well You just need to now raise $10,000 or go do it however you want that's the open world, right? Yeah, that's like the crime like GTA games They've always been sort of oddly disconnected like the story missions weren't super connected to like the moment to moment It felt like this very different thing and so tying those together of this is such a weird connection in it to make But like bothers get to does that like it releases you in the world and at one point you have to raise a ton of money Not sure and then it's and then it's like just go play the game, you know And like so if GTA really does that and gives you a reason You know to hold up liquor stores and like figure out what your path that's gonna be through that world It's like that's so clever and so smart Yeah, I love this whole sequence by the way Because the cars flip real good and like the fact that that is just that that's gameplay obviously It's an on rail sequence, but it's like it just again feels like so slick and well Constructed and like when when they take off and they drive A lot of games would not show the wind on the characters when they drive where their windows open and all that stuff Right like there's all this like nuance and you don't even see it anymore because it just feels like a movie right like a gangster movie Yeah, my close runner-up shot was when Lucia is jumping off of a tower and a base jump and they switch characters because I know we all want to see how the characters switch yeah, but like What what happens to Lucia There's no one there to open her purse. I mean there must be some like AI system for this you know the characters because they're like yeah They seem to be persistent. Yeah, right because you can keep switching between them like that's fascinating Like there's never been a thing like that, you know, yeah Yeah, I am super excited for same looks great But we've buried the lead On the video game news this week because no Nintendo switch online any as classics have been updated With ninja guidance 3 at carry warriors and RC RC pro-M2 What they made an RC pro-M2. Yeah, it's it improves a lot of stuff But most people like micro machines better, but I think it's good. It is this also by rare Do you know Sam graded the first one? Yeah, yeah, okay, who is I've never Okay, Joey says it's rare like I think I know more than the average person about video games I don't know that I ever knew there was an RC it's real it came out late enough that like everybody was kind of like a super Nintendo cool, all right But that means like it's like one of those really high qualities 90s NES games. It's cool. Yeah Did RC pro-M ever get an Nintendo power cover Sam? Yeah, because I learned about it somehow it must have been covered all my friends. Yeah Yeah, we like it Um Ninja got in three is good. It carry warriors is a game that I had and I loved as a kid I only learned that it was bad when I grew up The likes of like Jeremy Parrish should be really terrible. I'm sure it is. I have not played it since I was a kid, but yeah It's a I'm sure every every kid growing up in the 80s has like a game. That was the only game They had they had for the console and they love it. Yeah, and then years later they go back and they go oh no What was doing? Yeah, grandma's too on the NES man, you know, it's weird about RC probes. RC prob came out in 1988 and Or early and so that's the year that Nintendo power came out So they they would have covered it in those first couple of issues as like class maybe the classified information or yeah [BLANK_AUDIO]
um, Councillor Schorner. - So if I listened to a game scoop a couple of weeks ago, you brought up-- - Wait, is this Iron Tank? - You brought up Hero from Activision. - Yeah. - You played that. You're the only person I've ever met in my life who's also played that game. - Yeah. - That was one of those games that I have. That was like the only one. - Wait, did you have it on Atari 26th? I had the home computer version. - Yeah, some like Amstrad or something. - It was no, no, that's not Atari computer. - Okay, okay, so yeah. - Yeah, that's a cool game. - Yeah, it's great. - Coulding on to-- - Well, I would like to hear Parrish Knighter's games of his life some day, some day. - We'll do that some day. - Okay. - Is this Iron Tank? - There's so many years of my life, Damon. - No, that was a Carrier Warriors. - Oh, that was a car, yeah. - You're a tank, runs out of fuel, when it runs out of fuel it explodes. That's so fun. - Yeah, what a fun way of doing it. - So manufacturing defect for them. - Well, that'd be a lesson to you kids. Check your gas tank. - Carrier Warriors, it's obviously like a commando, Rambo rip off with like Super macho military dudes in the jungle. And then a Carrier Warriors 2 is, you're fighting aliens in outer space. - What, didn't it have a really dumb cover too? - That's right. - It's like the box, it was. - No, it's good art. - No, it's great, yeah. - This is good art. - I mean, it's dumb, but good. - But it's not the one that's still in the actor. - Where you're like, what happened? - Yeah, it's not like Mega Man dumb. - Okay. - Not derpy like that. - Okay. (bell ringing) - All right, extracurricular activities. On my flights to and from Germany, I watched two movies, you know, there it is. There it is. Watch two movies that attempted to revive classic fantasy franchises and they both bombed at the box office. - Yeah. - Okay. - And one of them was better than the other one. So I watched Master's of the Universe. It's okay. - Yep, I did too. I just watched it on the plane. - Skeletor is the best part. - It was actually pretty good. - I thought it was pretty good. - Well, 'cause maybe it's 'cause the other way I watched was a lot better. But for, you know, they lean on humor that I don't think always works. They. - No, but it serves as a way to get all the He-Man references in a cute way. - I mean, they have a recurring joke where, you know, the characters have, this is how they were named back in the day in the '80s. They were named names like Fisto and Ram Man. So they were recurring joke, making fun of their names, but in this reality, they're not the real names. They're just nicknames that He-Man gave them when he was a kid. And I just didn't. - That was a six year old. - It just didn't need to explain all that away. It's like, if you're watching this movie, you're probably a fan of He-Man. You don't care that they have goofy names. - No need to explain it all. - I thought that stuff was fine. - Yeah, no, that's a very, that's also a very marvelly, like Dr. Strange, like they have to like lampshade how, you know, the parts of it that don't work when you're trying to actually do it straight up. - But, like Justin said, Jared Lee is actually good at the skeleton. Although, if I didn't know it was Jared Leto, I would never have known 'cause he doesn't look like him. - Yeah, that's a matter that doesn't sound like him. - But he does a great job. - And he was, I mean, to get what's obviously a fan. Like, there's been a lot of anti negative opinion of him. - But just bafflingly, he crushed the role. - Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. - Yeah, leto and Skeletor crushed it. - Yeah, okay. - Also, the fight scenes are pretty good. And that's like, that goes so far, that goes so far for me. - Almost everything we said could have applied to the D&D movies, yeah. - That's the other movie I watched. - Okay, that's a good one. - D&D is much better. - It's much better. D&D. - I don't know if it's much better. - Yeah, it's much better because it's the same directors as Game Night. So it's like, oh yeah. - It's great. - It's really good. - I completely agree that it's a good movie, but I think they both are pretty stupid and I like them both. - Well, I think Dungeons and Dragons was much more successful. - I like that one. - Yeah, that was just fun. - I think the humor they're actually well. - Yeah, we actually just put up an article today. - Maybe the humor is better. I think that's a good point. - We actually just put up an article today, the director saying that he think it was bad timing. It opened at the same week as the Mario movie. - But there is another one? - No, not right now. - But see, that's what's so confounding because after Stranger Things, there was a D&D Renaissance. It's not like there are lots of people who love D&D where it's like, must as a lot of the universe is one of those sort of like, from my childhood, I still remember Gamble, right? And I think they misread the tea leaves with Barbie movie blowing up. - Yeah, yeah, yeah. - Such a different audience. - You know what's weird? So I agree, D&D was really well timed and it has deserved better. But I think he man would have done better in 2000, right? - Yeah. - Like it missed the window of early 80s the nostalgia of people having either 25 year old period. Like that's what they needed to it. It's just, I don't even know he man. Like I don't know he man at all. - Yeah. - It's like one of those things. When Pirates of the Caribbean came out, it was like the right time for Pirates movie. And then others tried, right? And they didn't work. And there were some decent pirate movies that didn't perform. And like, I think this is unfortunately what happened with D&D. And I didn't know Hugh Grant was in it and he was great. - Oh yeah, he was. - Yeah. - That's right. - I watched only terrible movies. Usually I watch bad movies on an airplane because I don't want to watch a great cinematic movie with a crappy sound set out of movies. But I did watch a Dutch movie called SoundMan about a Foley during, right at the beginning of World War II in Holland. It was a Dutch movie. It was really good, really excellent movie. - It was awesome. - And I watched it. I always have to watch a Jason State a movie on an airplane. There's always a new one too. This time he's a lighthouse keeper, basically. And I don't want to spoil anything, but he's got special skills. He's not just a lighthouse keeper. - What? - That happens. And he may have been a special forces guy. I know this can't believe it. - But I'm just a simple lighthouse keeper. Won't they just leave me alone? - I feel like him and Liam Neeson and he are just making the same movie over and over with a different profession like they're Baker or they be keeper. But they were always a special forces agent. - Yeah. - Anyway, that movie was so great. - On my extensive journeys, I watched all of the second season of Fallout and all of the second season of X-Men 97 and both weren't very good, but I did enjoy watching them. - Okay. - Yep. X-Men 97 deserves better, man. Like it has its moments and it's cute, but I love X-Men. I love like the aspect of reviving that series. It's really, really has potential, but there was just a lot of, there's a lot of layered characters coming back to life at this season. It's just like, oh my God. Why aren't we even killing characters anymore, Marvel? Like what are we doing? - Fallout season two was a bummer. It wasn't bad. It was just sort of like the first season was so strong. - I don't get it. It's acted well. Like what? They're trying to like set up death clauses. It's like mystical, like start of all of Fallout mythology. - Well, they're paying in the butt in the game to be fair. - Yeah. - No, no, it's not that. It's that they're like, I saw a beast in the snow. There's like this like origin story to death clause that are some like key to this. - It's just very strange. - I still had a good time. There's still has good moments. - I don't think the humor lands in this show. Sometimes it's really mean, and sometimes it's like, in that work, sometimes it sometimes it doesn't. And then usually it's about gross violence, but there's a lot of this show that's like, you know, I watch the whole season as I said, so. - Yeah, I never made, I never got around to season two and it doesn't sound like I need to. - No, no, no, you're fine. (upbeat music) - All right, that brings us to video game 20 questions and our suggestion sweet comes from Kurt, from Kelowna, British Columbia. Kelowna, one of those. Kurt says, I'm a huge fan. I haven't missed an episode since 2015. First time ever emailing, but I finally had two after hearing the praise from Pikmin 4. Once again, without mentioning it's multiplayer, so if there's someone wrote in asking, what Pikmin they should start with, we said 4. - Yeah. - But it's true. - That's because, and this is a fun fact, it doesn't have multiplayer. - According to Kurt, it does. - Pikmin is my favorite series with Pikmin 1 being my all time favorite game. It is endlessly replayable. I love the single player of Pikmin 4, but why doesn't anyone ever mention what an absolute stinker the multiplayer is. Pikmin 2 introduced a great head-to-head battle mode and 3 improved it in every way. It is the best competitive couch multiplayer of the 21st century in my unbiased and accurate opinion. My best friend and I still battle each other weekly and 4 replaced it with a tacked on timed coin collection game. - That's right, okay. - I actually really like 2. The only problem was it was split screen and you could see whatever the other player was doing, so I'm probably getting Pikmin. - Pikmin, Pikmin, it's fun. - I'm really happy that people play these multiplayer modes that I would never even select on the screen. - It's fine with me, don't go nuts. I mean, if you've ever played Warcraft or Starcraft multiplayer, there is something to these games where you have this sort of resource gathering activity and then you bring in your forces when they're big enough and go up against each other. Pikmin is a little bit more of like, you want to get as much crap back as possible and then the wily enemy gets in the way. I like these modes. They could be really strong online, but most of this was before Nintendo had decent voice chat and decent online experience. Maybe Pikmin 5 will be the ultimate multiplayer showdown. - Can you imagine? - Don't count on whistles all the time though. That's a lot of whistles. Double the whistle. - I think it'd be great if Nintendo stepped into the void that Starcraft has left, right? - I was thinking about it. - I think we have another article today about how it seems. It sounds like they're gonna announce a new Starcraft game. - It's so strange that like I remember spending hundreds of hours on Starcraft 1 and 2. It's so strange that went away. This was the biggest esports game on the planet and it felt stadiums and then Blizzard just went, [BLANK_AUDIO]
over well it only made a billion dollars instead of a million billion dollars it's not worth pursuing yep yep are we 20 are we 20 questions yes yeah and in your hint is that Kurt's message has some kind of a hint as to what the answer is but what's the hint it's probably that he really loved Metroid games multiplayer game does this game have multiplayer yes Metroid Prime 2 does this game yeah does this game have couch co-op multiplayer couch couch multiplayer well not co-op just couch multiplayer like split screen or handing off the controller is it an online multiplayer game it's where you're asking right split screen I'm I'd have to look it up and I'm gonna Sam Justin and Sam we're gonna be garbled because I'm not holding my IFB yeah do you listen to listeners what you're not seeing is that Damon has to always hold up his little receiver for his headpiece because there's some weird interference in the building okay the answer the answer is yes it is couch multiplayer it has offline multiplayer okay yeah yep yep yep that's too should we try this game originally come out on an Nintendo console no oh okay that it was gonna be a game cube game I thought it was gonna be super monkey ball two excellent multiplayer yeah had monkey target incredible do you play as a human no it's maybe it's fusion frenzy what do you play as that book of metal blobbers I don't know what you are in that game that's a deep deep cut should we ask era if you want yeah is this did this game come out after the year 2000 2000 yes okay that's five all right that fusion frenzy dream is alive did this game originally come out on an Xbox console yes was it an exclusive for Xbox oh I should ask that I haven't heard anybody say fusion frenzy in like 20 years oh you but you but Miranda's on your team Miranda mentions that she mentioned said a lot no it was not an Xbox exclusive oh rip don't castle crashers oh that's fun I knew was this game originally released in downloadable form no oh Ed's never raised favorite question was this an indie game no definitive um so a multi-platform game after 2000s but didn't come out on the Nintendo platform but it has couch coach was this developed in Japan no that's five say that we get to ask my favorite question did this company have E3 press conferences in the window that this game came out no so it's not eliminated it's a lot of companies it's not Bethesda could not be you be Nintendo sonial Microsoft it's not it's not chapter I think it's I think it's time splitters too except that came out on the game queue uh did this is this game a first or third person shooter no it's not time splitters no it couldn't have been anyway it's not a first or third person shooter why did Damon have to look up whether as um couch multiplayer right I wouldn't I wouldn't know that off the top my head well but he knew it was multiplayer yeah so it must have been also online I mean yeah I wouldn't know if it is maybe it's a driving game yeah maybe it's a strategy game like fantasy like fantasy star online or something because the pickman thing right real time is this uh is this a a driving strategy or platformer no oh boy what what it's maybe it's dynasty warriors maybe it's a fighting game this dynasty war is a multiplayer I don't know yeah uh yeah fighting game is a pretty obvious uh blind spot that I skipped but I guess I would always have offline always offline yeah that is this uh yeah is this a fighting or survival crafting game no I like how you just add a random genre to it yeah would you would you describe the the multiplayer in this as competitive yes that's 15 maybe sport oh sports is pretty good too I didn't I didn't I feel like I botched this I didn't ask great good questions like NFL Blitz something like that but yeah whatever madden I like what does madden have couch go up I can't answer that question well yeah of course it does you can I mean does it yeah yeah you yeah you still yes well they've always had it in it's like you see all the players at all times in your control and just like hockey a i says yes madden has got to go up do we ask if it's a sports game should we yeah but add on that idea too we're talking about a competitive game uh yeah yeah ask a sports ask about sports is it is it a sports game David no oh good not even extreme sports either Tony Hawk has so I forget did you lock down right an era we said after 2000 yeah yeah yeah and that was on an Xbox console so yeah but not exclusively and not on an Nintendo console that was never a question yeah we did was no there was some Nintendo question wasn't there yeah we asked if it was on an Nintendo platform and the answer was no because that's how I think you asked right oh whatever okay yeah did we we'll have to rewind the tape and check there's no way to tell there's no way to know well I think we're boned yeah but just having a I mean it could be is there anything that prevents this game from being something that literally came out last year or this year what about like a what about a schmup what about like orbitals or eka ruga what about if the hint is that like it's from the same year is picking for yeah I don't know what the hint would be I was thinking about I think the hint is it's probably not known for multiplayer like that that's how I would interpret that but I also just made that up um shooter what genres do we have you're right we can pinball it's Metroid Prime pinball that is co-op that that's multiplayer I would say it's banjo two because that has a great uh offline multiplayer mode and a great and terrible yeah Donkey Kong 64 that might be Donkey Kong 64 had multiplayer too but we asked about platform yeah exactly and it was no so we ruled out platformer sports survival fighting driving fighting fighting so that and strategy so that leaves honestly I mean it leaves it leaves like action first person action shooter we we asked about shooters too and it was not a shooter no it's just like de genre defying nonsense multiplayer that we're focusing on multiplayer but it's really just a single player game and maybe it's just a party game yeah oh yeah maybe there was a multiplayer party game in it but like the game is like you know but there's only one party game on Xbox and that's fusion frenzy is this a is this a party or pinball game no oh my god not a party open but there's nothing left Damon there's nothing left I should I should add and schmuff onto that question I want to add schmuff onto that question can we do it can we allow it because you don't play as a shooter maybe maybe does that mean it's a as it a schmuff and is that way because if the answer was no I feel like Damon would have said no maybe it's a schmuff maybe it's E. Caruga yeah don't you play as a human in a Caruga no you play as a ship yeah your ship with rotten demand increasing yeah yeah yeah did you ask if it's a schmuff or did you not ask no I was trying to I was trying to get Damon to give us a give me but he wouldn't do it how many questions are there you have two questions in a guess is it a schmup nope I was trying to just just let it go so you made it all me serious and you think of a schmup that's competitive multiplayer we don't know that it's competitive we just I literally asked if it was competitive multiplayer I keep on correcting everybody I think he said you know would you describe the multiplayer as competitive well there's there's the one on attire you with the tanks no I can't I can't what about tower defense does that count as strategy yeah I would say maybe it's anomaly war zone earth I don't you don't play as a human there's cozy yeah there's like your animal crossings competitive animal no no some you can't competitive so there are fishing tournaments racing flying there's ace combat that's a what that's a shooter I I mean I just give up I think uh I don't know is this based on a license no that brings you to a guess but I can reveal it if there is no guess packed man championship edition two it was on an xbox platform it's a championship edition two is not a terrible guess you know
- What is it? - Geometry Wars. - Oh, but no, yeah, no, it's not downloadable. - It has to downloadable. - Yeah, inclusive. - Pac-Man was too ultimate, you left week. - Yeah. - What about like a monster hunter or something like that? - Xbox, remember? - Yeah, it didn't, oh, yeah, I guess it never meant Xbox ever out. - Nintendo console. - Yeah, I don't even know what to get. - This is like, we literally said every genre ever invented, so this must be a really new genre. - You definitely didn't. - Oh my God. - Maybe it's a soul's like. - That's an action game, oh, you didn't say action. (laughing) - It's probably a hack in Slashers, I don't think. - Okay, you guys ready to do it? - Okay, yeah, this is a 2007 Xbox 360 and PS3 game. - Good year. - From a time when every game shipped with tacked on multiplayer modes that no one cared about. So, you got way to absorb with the multiplayer part of this. That was not actually an important part of the package. Kurt says he picked this game 'cause it's a fun and silly Pikmin style, an evil Pikmin style game. - Oh, Overlord? - Overlord. - Overlord. - Yeah. - Totally. - Overlord's great. - It is great. - Yeah, it is. - They made Overlord and Overlord two. They made one, I think, see, I think they made one for DS. - And then they made one nobody played and they might have ported one to the Wii as well. - What is this genre? - Action, RPG. - Wheel of Time Straton. - The genre is a bunch of guys running around. - Yeah. - A bunch of little guys running around. - Pikmin is like an RTS action game though. - Yeah. - Oh, yeah. - I said you don't play as a human. I don't think you do. I don't think you're a human. You're an overlord. - You're kind of a demon. - You're a human. - You're like a different type of demon than the demons you control. - Well, they're like Grimlands, kind of. - Mm-hmm. - Yeah. - Anyway, I like these games a lot. This is like our manager today. - What? - Managers? - This level of game, this tier of game, and we hardly ever get them. We used to get these games every other week back then. - Yeah. - Yep, yep. - Yes. - They're all mobile now. - Well, this developer is Triumph Studios. They're still around. They make, what's that four-by-game age of mythology? Is that what it is? They just make those now. - Boy. - I don't know. - I don't know. - I don't know. I don't know. - I don't know. - I don't know. - Yeah. - I don't know. - I don't know. - Yeah. - I totally forgotten this exists. That's awesome. - Good games. Good games. - Yeah. - Nicely attempt. [email protected]. And that's all the scoops that we have for you this week. Thank you, Pierre. Thank you, Sam. Thank you, Justin. Thank you to Joe Wert working behind the scenes to make this episode possible. My name is Damon. This is hygiene. Gamescoop. Never out. We should have asked if the multiplayer mode was totally tacked on and pointless. That should be, that should be one of your own questions. Oh my god. I can't believe you've never asked that. Like, was multiplayer the focus of this game is definitely, I think. Yeah, you used that before. I can't believe Sam, you never played Pikmin's multiplayer, the like cherry carrying cherries around, shit. It was so cool. I remember them previewing it. I think we played it in the office a little bit for three. Yeah. I gotta go. All right. See you guys. Bye, Justin. That was like a, was that the Wii U one? All right. Thank you, Sam. Awesome. Yeah. Bye. I hope you feel better, Sam. I know. Bye.
