The podcast features a heartfelt, nostalgic conversation between Peyton Dix and Hunter Harris as they reflect on their personal journeys from childhood to adulthood. Both share a consistent, bold, and joyful personality, rooted in expressiveness and authenticity. They reminisce about formative friendships, early crushes, and pivotal moments like jumping out of a car during a fight or being pulled from a dangerous situation by strangers, which symbolize deep emotional bonds. Pop culture—especially films like *Uptown Girls* and *Ever After*—plays a central role in shaping their identities. They also highlight the profound influence of their mothers, whose intuition and guidance have shaped their worldview. Career beginnings in retail and internships are discussed not just as jobs, but as formative experiences that fostered real human connection. The hosts conclude with shared lessons on self-awareness, emotional resilience, and the importance of authenticity—particularly in relationships and self-perception. They emphasize that true growth comes from embracing vulnerability, learning from mistakes, and trusting one's own instincts over societal expectations. Ultimately, the conversation celebrates the enduring power of friendship, nostalgia, and personal evolution across decades.
So, like, whatever happened to, hello, how are you?
My name is.
That was rude of us.
We were rude.
I'm so sorry.
I think it's, like, time for a lore drop.
I think it's time.
No, no, no.
Lore drop.
I think it's time to get back to basics.
Yeah.
What were you like as a child?
What were you like as a person in their early 20s?
MS, spoiler alert.
Well, actually, every stage of my life.
There's one consistent thing.
So, we're going to just spend a little time, let you get to know us.
Yeah, a little bit of, like, nostalgia bait.
Like, what kind of, what was your favorite movie as a child?
Yeah, all the good stuff.
Clipboard kid, dance background.
And you'll know who is who on that one.
Yeah, yeah.
Pop quiz.
Who's who?
Who's who?
Tell us.
Let us know in the comments.
All right, let's get into it.
Like, let's get to know each other on the mic.
Okay.
Okay.
Oh, wait.
It's so much comtier when you do it with your nails.
Yeah.
And then my little stubs.
It's really tough.
No, no.
I'm not touching.
Are you looking for a safe space for your secret celebrity opinion?
Do you need someone who understands your latest internet obsession?
We are a pair of decade-long best friends who love to fuss.
And discuss.
All things pop culture.
We're your first stop after that TMZ push notification.
From Higher Ground Audio, I'm Peyton Dix.
And I'm Hunter Harris.
And this is Let Me Say This.
Let me say this.
Let me say this.
And I've been saying it.
Let me say this.
Let me say this.
Let me say this.
Okay.
Okay, so tell me.
What were you like?
I have so many baby photos if you go to my phone that are so funny.
They all tell a story.
They do.
And it's the same story.
Like, here she fucking go.
That's like my energy as a child.
And as an adult, I was like, I think I'm not even, I'm not trying to be annoying when I
say this, but I actually think I've been the same since I was a kid.
Like, I came out loud.
I actually came out with joy.
Jaundice, by the way.
That's actually how I came out.
And my mom, who's beautiful, was like, what the hell is this?
I literally turned to the doctor and was like, that's not mine.
Have you seen me?
And I came out like, I earned my beauty.
But I was just like a very yes and kind of child.
Oh, wow.
From birth a little bit.
But what about you?
What was your like general childhood vibe?
Honestly, it's the same.
I'm going to say, yes, I'm the exact same.
I am literally the exact same.
To the point where at a wedding a couple years ago, this person I hadn't spoken to since
like literally high school graduation was like, huh, you're kind of the exact same person.
And I was like, and actually, thank you so much.
I think you meant it as like a little bit of a drag.
But I was like, nope, I needed that.
No, I was exact same.
I think I had maybe a little bit more joie de vivre as a child.
And say more.
I think I was a little bit more, like there's so many photos of me being like so expressive.
And I think sometimes I'm that way.
But then sometimes I feel like I'm not very expressive.
But then someone is like, I could tell you didn't like that.
And I'm like, okay, well, sorry.
Just kidding.
And I'm going to cut to insert photo of Hunter at like, it was like Easter or something.
You're at church.
And the way you're looking at the camera like with your little glasses.
You're like country glasses, by the way.
They're like LED glasses.
And you're like, that was on Easter.
That was a piano recital.
And I'm like, I think it was my mom or auntie took a photo of me.
And I looked.
I looked dead ass.
Like, I don't want to be here.
I don't want to do this.
I'm not ready.
Like, I stayed up all night practicing.
And I know that I'm not ready.
It's the funniest face I've ever seen on Hunter.
I've seen it.
And I see it frequently.
I know that look.
I know the London look.
I know the one.
It's truly like so serious.
Okay.
What were your, who's your best friend growing up?
I guess it depends.
Well, Kayla, who obviously, you know, Kayla and Evan have been my best friends for like
since seventh grade, eighth grade.
But then I had like, you know, childhood.
I had friends that were, can, oh wait, I was like, can I say people's government names
here?
I don't know.
What's the rule on that?
You tell me.
It's our podcast.
I guess we should decide.
But I had this one friend that was like my ride or die in like middle school.
And I feel like I thought my middle school, I have one friend from middle school, Cameron
Taylor, shout out to you.
But everyone else, I just kind of stopped becoming friends.
When you go to high school, it just felt like so different, which is weird because my middle
school is, we got great grades.
I graduated in feelings.
It was like really small.
It was vibes only up in there.
That's so LA.
Oh my God.
Called the Willis Community School.
Shout out to the Willis Community School.
It was like, your aura today is like, you get an A.
I love LA.
I love LA.
And I loved so many teachers there.
It was a great place.
But then I kind of didn't really keep in contact with a lot of those people.
But my high school best friends were two very chaotic, beautiful black women that are under
investigation right now.
Not by the FBI, but we love them.
Who are your besties?
My first best friend was this girl, Ashton, and my entire family hated her.
Cool name.
Oh.
Yeah.
She had red hair, still does have red hair.
She's MAGA now.
What can you do?
But no, my entire family hated her, even to the point where like my grandma would, whenever
I was like, you know, we're just like catching up talking and she's like, are you still friends
with that little redhead, Ashton?
Red like a slug.
Like, no, they all hated Ashton.
And I get it because one time we were like, our moms.
We're both like young, divorced women.
We had a carpool to school together.
And one time she asked like, why are you going to Las Vegas?
How can you afford that?
And my mom almost pulled the car over and said, excuse me, what are you talking about?
Truly was like, and I have to say that again because I don't think I caught that.
Crazy.
And then my best friend was just like other best friends in middle school that I'm not
super close to.
I was very close to my friend, Steven, who I'm still really good friends with and we
were both each other's.
We were both crushes, but at different times.
And he like pushed me down the stairs once.
Can I tell you something?
Yeah.
The most noble thing a woman can do is be a gay man's crush.
I was going to say, and have a crush on a gay man back.
Well, that still happens sometimes.
Well, I want to say Steven was my first gay crush.
Yeah.
After him was, I probably shouldn't say their full names.
I mean, they're out.
After him was Tanner.
After him was Anderson Cooper.
After him was, yeah.
So I can go on.
Um, talk about ally.
You're like, it's really good ally.
Too good, in fact.
Wait, I actually, something you said that's so funny to me is like, and I always think
about this.
My mom has always been right about every friend I had a falling out with.
Yes.
And there's not really that many, but the ones that I was like, oh, absolutely never.
My mom was like, and I was so like, leave, leave alone.
Like, she's my girl.
She's my bestie.
My mom was like, for now.
No.
And then is your mama, I told you so, mom too?
Uh, yes.
Okay.
Yeah.
Well, they're black.
We have black moms.
Yeah.
Pause.
So that answers the question itself.
But like, was your mom always like, I clocked that tea.
Oh, no.
She always knew Ashton was a problem.
She always knew.
And then there was like, actually, I was talking to my best friend from childhood, Molly, the
other day.
And she was like, your mom always said that Catherine's skirt was too short.
And that's why you couldn't go to her lake house and like spend the night.
Because she was fast.
And I was like, and my mom knew.
I love fast.
And my mom knew.
We got to bring back calling someone fast.
No.
Fast is so.
It's kind of nasty.
It's so Beyonce nasty girl.
Beyonce, Destiny's Child nasty girl.
It's so like, okay, so you're actually crazy.
Like, you need to take a few steps back.
I will say just a mere week ago, my mom texts me a photo.
I swear she's lovely and woke.
These women's bodies and they had these huge BBLs.
And she just goes, it's like middle of the night, crazy booties.
Question mark, question mark, question mark.
I was like, I love a black mom.
Like, I don't.
And he's like, what the hell?
I'm like, girl, I, the asses were quite fat.
It was crazy.
But it was like.
A text from a mom though is, it comes at any moment.
There's truly, they're on a different type of time.
Right.
It's like in the middle of the night.
It's something so random.
Like truly my mom texted me that my high school was getting a new head of school.
Recently?
I want to say, yes.
I want to say at like maybe 10 o'clock at night.
And I was so like, so why would that matter to me?
Yeah.
So what is the thought process here?
But then maybe she really knows me because you better believe I went on the.
Facebook.
Oh my God.
And I went to see a photo of this guy.
I couldn't remember if I had ever met him before.
And the skirts at my high school now are so short.
Oh yeah.
And I was like, we need parents in the home.
These girls are fast.
No, so I'm actually becoming, it's like just a circle.
I'm like becoming my mother.
That kind of reminds me.
Like, do you feel like you like identify with your mom a lot?
Do you guys think, do you think you have a lot of the same qualities?
I think we have a lot of the same qualities, but I think that we express them differently.
But sometimes I do.
I do hear sentences come out of my mouth.
And I'm like, oh, that was my dad's voice.
When I'm like, oh my God, can someone turn off a light in this house?
It's like, oh, so that's my father.
Entered the room with us right now.
Do you feel like you're more your dad than your mom?
No, I think we just, we connect in different ways.
But what, tell me a story about you as a child that, that is like the story of your youth.
That's like, okay, this is what type of time she was on.
So this is the first time I hopped out of the car while it was moving.
First time.
Lady Bird, my gosh.
Yeah, she, she, Greta Gerwig watching me being like, oh my God, I'm taking notes.
Yeah, two times.
Two times before Lady Bird came out.
But I, I can't even remember.
My mom, I had asked my mom about this recently.
We were driving in Hollywood.
My mom and I scream fighting.
My brother is a passenger and passive princess.
So he's just sitting there.
Wait, are you in the, he's in the front seat or he's in the front seat?
Okay.
I'm in the back.
He's quite as mouse.
One time when I was fighting with my mom, actually.
My brother was, like, so sick of it, he just reaches over, turns,
him up he ate that too i was like you know what and you're right to do it because we both kind of
suddenly were like okay yeah like whatever you're right like this i'll shut the fuck up but you know
i'm in like a middle school we're fighting about something apparently my mom said i was fighting
about like whether like over something about american idol i get something so trivial but i'm
really hard-headed because i'm a tourist so i just wanted to win the argument i guess and i had
nothing else to do but leave the car like just to put my body on the line so we're screaming
screaming screaming i'm like and i jumped out of the car on hollywood boulevard and my mom
drove off she was like you want to you want to be funny i'll be hilarious
hilarious she zips like fine zips away i end up like going into some restaurant i'm
scared i don't hollywood is no no that can i say that's the most shocking part is that you
chose hollywood to get out of the car hollywood chose me actually
is calling my body this is the time that is like oh god and i was sitting in this restaurant being
like do i do it like do it it's just my life now like i'm a girl on the road and i was like
so no i'm gonna ask for the payphone yeah yeah i was like uh can i borrow the phone i need to call
my mom and call her and just watching her pull back up and
again get in the car quiet and i still like that way like that that could have happened last week
like it's it's very like me it's very right mom it's very like your brother my brother it's all
it's it's very hollywood hollywood is full of girls that just in front of their parents cars
and we're like i walk in and there's a community of us there's a meeting in the back
it's just it's just the waiter's like oh god come on get back to that table
yeah we got blankets we have plenty of you what about you is there any moment that like pops
up yes this is a story that i'd honestly forgotten until my mom reminded me of it because it was my
grandma's favorite story to tell about me that my dad was dropping me off at her house one day
and we like got into it i was like probably five five or six we got into a fight in the car because
i wanted something that he wouldn't buy me yeah like a book or something and like a book or
something yeah that we fuss about books a lot um but i according to my grandma i got out of the car
and i said my dad was like you know
maybe i'll get it for you later blah blah blah and i looked at him and said that's okay i'll get
auntie to buy it for me and walked right into the house and was like in a discussion whatever
so when i say i was put on this earth to be my dad's number one up that's what i mean
every daughter is actually no totally totally
oh my god like i had like so actually so actually oh no no but that that feels like very mean it's so
because you know who it fucking is when i think of hunter and i's dynamic i think of
this really great movie called uptown girls
and a hunter is dakota motherfucking fanning i decode fitting down
was it evian water or aquafina i think it was evian yeah yeah yeah her spray didn't she have
like a little have it on me actually something crazy this weekend where i went to see a movie
and i brought my little um
like hand standing out of my purse yeah and it like like squelched in such a disgusting way
because it was like has like barely any left and i was like oh god i need to refill squelched i need
to read and that's actually like the the most polite way i can put it it was crazy i felt so
embarrassed um britney murphy though okay so speaking of uptown girls tell me like five like
movies tv shows that were integral to your growing up honestly maybe uptown girls i love that movie i
should recently hold up um you know what movie i was obsessed with though ever after okay that
attracts to me i would believe because i was on never after girl but i believe that you were never
after girl and you know who i loved until i found out she was problematic the you're a pebble in my
shoe the the mom the what's her name i don't know uh angelica houston she's problematic that's what
i've heard but you know i've been doing this thing where i've been saying they're canceled and i'm
like yeah i'm just making it up sometimes i've been doing this thing where i've been saying they're
i do but i think so i think she defended like a pedo or something like that audience fact check
we're putting you guys to work this is crazy our audiences are submitting w9s
she's problematic now i was gonna say oh deprimessing she's in ever no no but just
a problematic actress it's like come on there's only two um jamie lee curtis yeah but that rack
sometimes i forgive her
sorry okay anyway uh ever after was really really really really formative for me it like
if it was all i had a crush on every single person i like would watch it over and over and over again
it was like my safety movie tv shows i don't know i'm kind of like all over era wise like i'm like
oh disney kid like that's so raven felt like my entire personality is built off of that's
or even in some of my wardrobe actually when i'm feeling young i can see that well definitely when
i was young i was like
oh i was popping out in a limited two you don't get me near a limited two i'll go crazy i loved
like all of her little like butterfly clippies like she had she's like a heavy a lot of times
like like a like side kind of swoop yeah but like not like an alia suit but like a like a plastered
down swoop she has so much fun with her hair and i like yeah i miss not miss that era i think we're
like back in it a little bit of like black girls like really playing with like how yes like their
hair looks like i think she was like part of that but she was stepping out every day every day
okay okay woman um i think she was like part of that but she was stepping out every day every day
uh yeah i don't know those are some of the first ones that come to mind i guess what about you
um definitely it was a that's a raven girl cheetah girls cheetah sisters five six seven with the
vocals sorry sorry um i was also i loved runaway bride i would watch runaway bride all the time
which honestly says a lot about me um and my mom you went on and also it's like how long do you
have to talk about well because and i also remember a wedding to exhale
you went on and also it's like how long do you have to talk about well because and i also remember
that was a big one but i couldn't watch the whole movie i had to watch like certain scenes
because they were like inappropriate um i would watch the preacher's wife a lot growing up i don't
know that is the winnie houston movie i know i never saw it oh i know okay so actually we'll
be leaving right now we'll be going to a private screening i'm surprised you didn't say there is
some so there's some education that needs to be um and i was a big like okay i kind of feel like
private school kids
private school kids
like disney and public school kids like nickelodeon but then the like alternative school kids were all
in a cartoon network like is cartoon network like recess or was that nickelodeon that was
nickelodeon oh cartoon network was like uh johnny bravo ed ed and eddie i i couldn't stand ed ed and
eddie no rather could i i truly was like wait where are their parents you're gonna get like
what is it crazy i hated playing i hated ed and eddie i was like loki like we need parents in the
home like what like what are your parents doing it was like giving me like white trash i was like
no event boys the damn girls the girl version and now let's say it and that's called patriarchy i
don't care okay oh my god i don't even remember the girls i loved the wild thorn berries though
i loved the hot oh my god uh deb is that her name i can't remember you know who i like dexter's the
no i was gonna say didi got on my nerves you're doing too much um i like that boy just became my
mother doing that um i liked the dad in wild thorn berries i thought he was like sex that does not
surprise me were you a rugrats kid yeah of course no and now it's been said go ahead and say it um
when i was little my mom would not let me watch rugrats because angelica quote gave me an attitude
it empowered you a little too much i watched angelica and i said oh i'm moving different now
to my mother any type of way and she said not on my watch she said damn you can't identify with
suzy nice black girl she's right there damn my mom said representation does not matter actually
turn it off oh my god i i actually i feel say like my rugrats i couldn't stand the boy that breath
breathed weird um but then i felt bad i had empathy because his mom was dead but but then
he got the stepmom and i was on his side i was like that's stepmom i don't trust her wait who is
um i'm gonna go up a little bit who's like day 14 crush oh um well
oh daniel radcliffe was a big crush of mine i know that's so not like me he's short yeah
um but i just loved harry potter growing up look how that's aged not well um and then also i think
i like you know as a mature woman i graduated immediately from daniel radcliffe to like uh
orlando bloom
and then johnny depp and yeah you're bi
i was gonna say no i'm insane so that's just math by the way
because i know exactly what eras you're talking about for each i'm like also chad michael murray
too that was a big lesbian oh and tanning tatum too i remember a core memory of mine is watching
she's the man in the movie theater with my mother and my mom looking at me and saying he's got a
little black in him and he and she and every black mother said and i said he's all right i know like
hello that's what every black mother can agree on like do we like beyonce huh do we love channing
tatum absolutely absolutely what was your who's your day 14 crush i have to talk about you know
have you seen that video of my mom watching
magic mic
oh of course
went over her glasses
and she's like
takes her glasses off
starts saying
I'm like
this is activating you too much
like there's another person
in the room
it was disgusting
um
I
mine was
okay
I specifically had
okay do you remember B2K
yeah of course
so I had this poster of them
and I was like
I can't decide
who to love
and so
oh wait
is this when you kiss
all of them
I used my mom's
like expensive
MAC lipstick
to do it
and she was like
see bitch
no
that's when she knew
she had a problem
on her hands
she was like
oh my god
and like me
genuinely thinking
like I
I have to pick
because they're
they're gonna see me
and not know what to do
but
speaking of short kings
Omarion
um
and where is he now
is he a problematic now
no
no I think he's good
he was just
he did that little slam dance
he had that
that meme
do you remember
I don't know
the only
whenever I see someone
jumping on the timeline
I'm like oh my god
it could be Chris Brown
like I have to scroll past
like you never
and he was kind of jumping
um
and Bow Wow
oh my god
first time I shaved
first time I shaved
was for Bow Wow
concert
wow
oh Omarion actually
so I was like
double trouble
I'm trying to remember
the first time I shaved
I'm like why am I
I think it was for a real
like a boy in real life
oh
oh great
same
yeah totally same
also boys in real life
over here
but
no but I did have
I did have a big crush
on Bow Wow
and I remember my friend
Elizabeth
and I
we would like fight over
who could get Bow Wow
and who could get
like a friend
like
random friend
those were the two options
yeah
they're only two boys
if you can't get Bow Wow
you can have this guy
yeah
um
yeah I loved him
he was
and yeah
he was everything to me
so let's talk about
when we met
how old were you
18
uh yeah
I was uh
we were freshman
and we were
let's say
college
girls together
we
we enjoyed that too
yes
so annoying
um
but we were girls together
we literally were
in like film 101
oh history of media arts
that's what it was called
history of media arts
yeah
and
Andre Puka
Andre Puka
kind of sounds like a black name
Andre Puka
and I'm like
okay yeah
or at least like
a little something something
like one of those people
you look at and squint
a little razzle dazzle
yeah
I thought he was hot
I did not
he kind of looked like
um
oh my god
who's that guy from Shrinking
yeah
I didn't
that's not my thing
my mom loves it though
every mom loves
anything on Apple TV
including me
and the morning show
Apple TV
you and my mom
going toe-to-toe
on the morning show
it's crazy
um
uh
he was not hot to me
but
he had such
but he knew so much
because he's a teacher
he has
that's his job
to know at least a little
something
you'd be surprised
at Emerson College
you'd be surprised
um
but that was like
I feel like
our
um
okay you know
I wonder what's like
do you know
I've been asking this
to people recently
it's like when you meet someone
and then when you lock in with them
and I feel like
you start a friendship
like in a lock-in moment
like we had met each other
because we were in a class
and then we
I felt like
I feel like we locked in
because you would always
be on my floor
yeah
because
Nikki lived on your floor
yeah
or Rachel lived on your floor
Nikki lived on my floor
I remember the
I remember when I locked in
with Rachel
because Rachel was friends
with my roommate at the time
because they were acting
students together
and like weekend one
of college
Rachel
threw up in my
trash can for some reason
well in my roommate's trash can
it was wicker
which obviously
that would not be mine
we need to do an episode
just on Rachel as well
because I just remember
this crazy email she sent me
and she's like
sending us these
instances right now
wait wait
is that the email
from when she was like
lost on the side of the road
or something
yes because I remember it
yes because I remember it
and that was
I'm also like
so wait
why is email the way
how did you get access to this
if you lost your phone
you can't find your keys
you're outside your house
I'm like
so where in the world
Rachel lives a different life
yeah
i.e. she's white
she moves different
yeah
said with love
okay yes
but I think
I feel like when we were
on my floor
yeah probably
honestly I was like
I probably feel like
Rachel did something crazy
and we both were like
is this yours
shit I guess it's ours
yeah
yeah yeah yeah
this one yours
I guess we're gonna share
custody
joint custody of Rachel
is crazy
but then I feel like
we
I don't know
we like
we just kind of like
eased into each other
I feel like
yeah
and didn't feel like
we eased into each other
I know that sounds so
that sounds crazy
we just eased into each other
I don't know if that works
so they don't have the
hopefully it does
something sensual happening
but I actually remember
this one moment
it's just not like
the origin story
but I remember
this a specific story
where I was like
uh oh
either Hunter's gonna be
so in this relationship
or so out of it
when we were like
out I guess
we were getting pizza afterwards
and there's these
drunk guys
that come
okay for a moment
I was like
I don't know what story
she's about to tell
but that's
that moment
I'm getting chills
all over my body
because I was literally like
I'm wearing a J.Crew coat
it's Boston winter
and I'm thinking to myself
what is she about to
get me the fuck into
because these men
were like
mid men
just so
so regular
it's Boston
yeah I was about to say
we said Boston
but like
but they lived
in an apartment building
across the street
from our door
and we were getting pizza
and they were like
come over
and I was like
yeah
like I
you were like
again
yes and
to my
I need to
and Hunter's like
no
but I'm like
holding my
I'm like ooh
but a good type A friend
knows her type B friend
needs a hand holding
yes I was like
you're not gonna send me alone
you know
I'm not sending you up
to these strange men
by yourself
I feel like they also
the only thing I remember
about that night
is that they
like would throw
something
like stuff out of the windows
and it was so illegal
no no
that was like
it was so dangerous
and so illegal
and I was like
oh we have to get out of here
they were being so
they were just already
saying crazy things
and again
I can
unfortunately my talk
secretary's like
I'm gonna connect
with anybody
like
so I'm trying to like
understand
and then they open a window
and throw a glass bottle
out of it
and I kid you not
it was instant
Hunter
alright we're going
so we're literally
grabbed by the wrist
and it was like
we're out of here
we're done
we're cooked
it's over
it's a wrap
it was
but it's like
one of those things
where it's like
either this bitch
is about to get me
in a lot of mess
and I'm gonna be her friend
or it's like
you either have to
cut it off
or keep going
for forever
you know what I mean
and that was like
a moment that was like
it wasn't the last
lock-in moment
but it was like
you're signing a contract
yeah that was a good
that was a good look
I feel like the moment
with you
was like
I think we were like
in
actually in that same building
and it was my friend
Maggie's birthday
and you'd come over
and it was like
honestly it's so random
that they even had
like a party
but I watched you
say like
someone offered you weed
and you were like
oh I don't smoke
20 minutes later
oh yeah
and it's like
I was like
this bitch is a liar
she lies
like it was just so funny
and I'm like
totally
totally totally
so do you remember
our Las Culturistas
Las Culturistas episode
oh that you don't
stand on business
absolutely
absolutely
know thyself
okay
know that my mind
will change
in exactly what
20 minutes
that's all it takes
it was just so funny
because I was like
oh huh that's weird
I swear
oh
okay
I see it now
hmm
that sounds like
that sounds exactly correct
sounds like me
no debate there
I would say 62 Boylston
that was the address
of that building
that it saw a lot
I was just like
dox them
but I was like
honestly dox those men
that were there
if you ever see some
crazy men throwing shit
out the window
I feel like people
crazy people cycle
through that building
honestly
it's like
you wouldn't last
an hour in the asylum
where they raised me
but then we were
RAs together
yeah we were RAs
not together
but like at the same time
yeah you got the nice
classy building
I got the roaches
but then you got
Colonial
yeah I randomly upgraded
well I had some serious
stuff on my floor
in LB
and I think as like
an apology to me
or like a favor to me
I got like the sickest floor
it was like the all women's floor
oh my gosh
before I was even
I said I'll take it
why not
let's do it
it was like the all women's floor
in like this like
really quiet
nice building
and I had like 13 residents
it was nothing for grown folks
it was a building that's like
okay if you're living in Colonial
you like know a thing or two
but a thing or two
that's why they brought me in
I was in
the dorm
it was like
kind of
the party dorm
you're part
P-Ro right?
yeah
well no I guess LB was the party
party dorm for real
it was just like a freshman dorm
yeah but
P-Ro was like cool
like if you were
P-Ro was like okay
so you're a sophomore now
you can like have people over
to underage drink
in your living room
that has a mini fridge
and I would have to like
bust the parties
I think I busted two parties
and I was like
I don't want to do the paperwork
like
yeah yeah
it was such a nightmare
so random that we are
actually I feel like
that actually calls
financial responsibility
yeah
I think I just got it
as like a
like I think I had
a good interview
but on paper they were like
wait
no because they needed
cool girls to be RAs
yeah they were like
being an RA is cool
there were too many like
accountants who were RAs
straight
the cops
we had the cops
on our team
and it's like
ACAB the cop in your mind
like I was like
say that
woke
dorm enforcement
and then we also like
just
I mean we don't talk
but we were
we were in a sorority
we were in a sorority
okay
bleep it
like what the hell
like
it's
that's like
random AF
of us
and I was
did you do like
were you on
any kind of council for it
or did you like
respect yourself
no I did run for
I think I ran for like
eboard
honestly only because
I wanted the drama
I wanted like
the inside scoop
but
I didn't get it
because someone
sabotaged my campaign
oh
name them
we've said so many
government names
on this podcast already
Might as well add another.
I just thought you'd be too busy for it.
Because you were like a working woman in college.
I was.
I had my little Madewell little briefcase bag on in the club.
I was Madewell boots.
But like you were like real, like I worked like retail.
You were like, so I've got 14 internships and a child at home, okay?
Whose name is Rachel.
Yeah, yeah.
I'm a single mom who works two jobs, okay?
That was you.
But I, it was like you always had money because you worked retail.
Like at All Saints, at Zara, at, did you work at Brandy?
No, Urban Outfitters.
I don't think I was skinny enough to work at Brandy.
Or white enough.
Well, who was?
Who was skinny enough to work at Brandy?
Could be.
But like, you just have to do this around your hips and then you can work there.
Did you work at American Apparel too?
No.
Oh.
I remember though when I, I did not know what American Apparel was before college.
And I got, I put on my little skater dress and I said.
And got to work.
We are also, wait, another core friendship memory of the two of us is when I was like,
oh, I'm going to be a bad girl.
Like a rip hole in my tights.
And I was like, and you were like, that looks kind of like, you look like you kind of don't
have a home.
You look like you come from a broken home.
And I was like, I thought I was being cool.
There's a hole in your tights.
You were like, oh, that's weird.
Huh.
That doesn't seem like you.
You're like fake, faker.
Fake bad girl.
Oh my God.
So stupid.
Oh my God.
I love it.
I'm an aspirational bad girl.
And, but that's how you end up in someone's home, throwing glasses out the window.
Truly.
Truly.
And I said, oh, bad girl shift is done.
It's time for me to go home.
Time for me to go back to my house.
Oh my God.
Yeah.
Well, I was going to say, I'm curious, like early, because we moved to New York around
the same time.
Yeah.
10 years ago, which is crazy.
I know.
How do you feel about, how do you feel about being 10 years in New York?
I actually was like, I feel like we should throw a party.
Like.
No, I think we should.
I feel like that's like a big milestone.
I'm learning the more I say it.
Can I just say, I have spent years following hair advice that was just not made for me.
I mean, I have followed everything and my curls are just not cooperating.
Because bad advice wasn't for us.
It was generic.
It was one size fits all, which you know, really means one size fits some.
And the moment I stopped trying to treat my hair like everybody else's and started treating
my actual needs, everything changed.
So that's the whole thing with Baskin-Leather.
It's a black owned family.
It's a family operated hair care brand that was literally born out of a family's refusal
to accept a bad diagnosis.
A dermatologist told their CEO's sister that her hair would never grow back.
And now guess what?
It's down to her hips.
Okay.
See, that's the kind of origin story I want behind my hair care.
Their stimulating scalp and hair balm is a hundred percent natural, non-greasy, and
there's no petroleum.
And the hydrating hair mist with aloe vera and avocado oil, perfect for frizz, dryness
and detangling.
And you can even use it on protective styles like locks and braids.
Real ingredients made for our hair.
You can explore viral bestsellers and hair care for all types at
baskinleatherco.com slash LST and get 20% off.
That's 20% off at baskinleatherco.com using code LST.
No, I think it is.
I think a lot of people like do like a few years in New York and then like go back to
like sort of real life.
Right, right, right.
Or like they do like, okay, like a cue.
Kids and we're doing this.
Like five.
Yeah, no, it's actually, Easter was a big, I was like, ooh, so everyone has kids.
That's crazy.
Yeah.
Some people are on the second and third.
Couldn't be me.
And I, truly the first thought was like, did I leave a candle burning?
No, thank God.
So that's why I'm not a mother.
Yeah.
Except for to a dog.
Okay.
Question for you.
Oh, first job and worst job.
First job, I actually, you know, it was retail.
I worked a ton of retail.
Okay.
Um, I will say I really miss working retail.
I like, I miss, um, intergenerational hangs a lot.
And when I told you I worked the stock room at Zara, like I had to switch my shift because
I, of my class schedule, I worked at like six o'clock in the morning.
So I like come in and like open boxes and just pull all the stuff out.
My do everything ripped, by the way.
So if you're ever in a Zara and you're like something ripped, it's not you.
It's Zara.
Okay.
They all come ripped.
They're liars.
You can, you can exchange it.
You can get your return.
So I'm working.
I'm working at Zara early morning shift and I'm like opening these things and I'm having
just the key of my life with like a 60 year old, another 19 year old, a 32 year old.
It's like really real range.
I love that.
I love that.
And I was just like, I miss having conversations with people that aren't just like in media
in their thirties, you know?
Um, and so I feel like a deep nostalgia for like that kind of connection and that kind
of key, but, and also saying Sarah, I love that.
I got clocked by the Spanish girls.
They were like, Ooh, Sarah.
I was like, you're so right, queen.
You're so right.
Um, but I, I guess my first one was maybe urban outfitters.
I think that was my first job.
I was, I worked at the LA.
No, in Harvard square in the men's section.
And I was like, which is only weird because it's like men, Boston drunk men all the time
coming in stealing.
They were like, well, Peyton, what do you want?
I'm a girl.
What the hell do you want me to do?
Tackle him?
And I would be like, also, I'm not tackling anyone over one of those urban outfitters,
men's cardigans.
Like, excuse me.
Wait, hold on.
Hold on.
I have this one life over BDG.
I'm like, come on, literally over BDG.
Come the fuck on.
That's crazy.
It was insane.
I'm like, but I also, I feel like I have this thing where I only really trust people that
had either like a retail or a service job.
Cause like you have to have been like just fucking yelled at in a crazy way.
And like these, like getting paid, what?
$10 an hour.
Um, it was my first job.
Not my worst job.
My worst job was probably like, I was like, how real do I get on this?
I piss off former employers.
Um, I don't know.
I actually don't think I've, I actually don't think I've had like horrendous jobs.
I've had hard experiences at some jobs that required a lot of therapy.
Um, and caused a few relationship troubles for me in my life.
So like.
Name them.
And honestly, find me at DM me and I'll tell you.
Um, but like nothing that felt like a fun story.
Like just like a sad one.
You know what I mean?
Like not like a crazy.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I don't know.
What about you?
Um, my first job was that, I mean, my first like paying job was I was a nanny for a summer
for these two girls and it was awful.
And guess what?
I was bad at it.
And the girls, I mean, they were just like, we like, we're just, we're not on the same
vibe.
We weren't on the same type of time.
Yeah.
And they also had a really stinky dog that I didn't like.
Oh, I hate a small dog.
And they wanted me to like play like hide and go seek.
I'm like low key, like you're like 12 and 13.
Like you shouldn't, we should be like kind of over this.
Like you should be able to entertain.
You should be able to entertain yourself.
And the mom worked with my mom and that's what we came, like how I got the job.
And she came home one day and she was like, Hunter, whenever I come home, you're always
like reading her on your computer.
And I literally said to her, well, I'm modeling good behavior.
And I did not see a problem with that until like truly like four years ago.
Cause I was like, I'm like, sorry, that's, that's what they should be doing.
I learned by example.
That's what I was providing.
Guys, look at this.
I'm being quiet.
And then that was also kind of my worst job, but I always, um, I did a lot of internships.
I remember one internship was in Boston at the Boston like globe website.
And I was so, I just had the worst shifts and I was so bad at it.
And I was so like tired and bored all the time.
Cause I work at like six o'clock in the morning, like after having gone out the night before.
And, um, I quit that job cause I got a job in New York when I was moving to New York.
And my boss was so mean.
Like my editor was so mean.
She was like, well, you signed a contract.
And I was like, no, I didn't.
She's like, well, when you like, we made like a promise.
And I was like, I didn't, not me.
You pinky swore.
Like, what did you do?
And I'm like, so I'm like, this is like a paying like salary job.
Like, what am I going to do?
Not move to New York.
She's like, well, you should really stay like three more months.
I was like, my, my parents said I couldn't.
Like, so.
And so it got to that level.
Who loves as I can?
Like, what the?
It was like the first and last time I was like, well, if you know me, my parents, it's like, that doesn't mean any.
I was just like, well, sorry, my parents said I can't.
So I have to go.
And I was, oh gosh.
And I still, she like unfollowed me on Twitter after that.
Oh my God, you're a child.
That's so like, why are you beefing with a 13 year old?
Truly.
Like, literally.
And as an adult now, I'm thinking to myself, like, so she was crazy.
Like, this was so over the top.
But yeah, that was probably my worst job.
Oh, wait, actually.
Okay, I have one actually, which was my internship at V Magazine.
Oh my God, I forgot about V Magazine.
Good.
Keep it.
That way.
Oh my gosh.
Wow.
It was just like, so, it was so New York derogatory in a way that I wish wasn't my introduction to New York.
It's where I was like, oh, everyone's performing, being interesting.
No one actually, you're all smoking, but no one's inhaling.
And I should know because I smoke, but I don't inhale.
But it just was like, so I got the wrong water one time.
It was very that.
And I was like, oh girl, you, goodbye.
We're done.
It was very that.
It was like such a lame internship.
That's so crazy.
That's such like loser energy.
We're like, you have to like find something just like to feel important.
Yeah.
To feel like self-important.
Yeah.
Oof.
I'm like, okay, that was gross.
I hate that.
That was gross.
But we're not, we're not that kind of New York anymore.
Who would play you in a biopic?
I think we have the same answer.
Oh, do we?
What?
Oh, do we?
Well, I thought you were just going to say, I mean, Mahala.
Mahala?
Is that how you say her name?
Oh, yeah.
Yeah.
Okay.
Oh, oh, for you, for sure.
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Mahala.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I remember when no one was watching Industry, but I was, I said, oh, Peyton, you're clocking
in for your shit.
you're working at a bank
and no one
got the joke ever
and I'm like
so there are two of you
running around London
and everyone's like
what is she saying
and now look
I would make her
I would make her play me
or
like
in a just
dream casting
old Raven-Symoné
yeah
she could do me
well
that's funny
because I feel like
like
previous Raven-Symoné
could do you
but present day Raven-Symoné
could do me
because she's serious today
yeah
she is
she's really serious
she is really strict
and I still have a wife
who sucks too
but she's strict
she
I saw her in an interview
and she was like
yeah listen
I was at Disney
I was working
I wasn't jealous of Miley
because I had Orlando Brown
to deal with
she's like girl
I was truly putting in the work
I was busy
she said but it'll be
I'll do my memoir
I said up
and clock it
I love
I love when someone is like
I'm saving that for the book
yeah yeah
don't think you're gonna get
that answer on me right now
you're gonna pay
$29.99 to get that answer
I'm not giving this
to the breakfast club
for free
not the breakfast club
oh my god
yes well you know
okay who would play me
I'm curious
who you were gonna say
well
someone that I dated once
told me that I
I was like
oh well Zendaya
and he said
no because
you know how like
they play at the end
of a biopic
like the real photos
you don't want people
to like be disappointed
is he white?
what do you think?
so I bought a gun
that very night
um
no
shoot
I
I
mmm
oh you know what
Taylor Russell
oh
I was gonna say
Laura Harrier
oh
because you both
have really big eyes
I can see that
she's not a good actress though
not good enough
oh well
I didn't know
we were talking about quality
I thought we were just talking about
well you have a good actress
so I'm like
well I should too
oh
well I should too
you're so
cool
I'm pissed
I would say
I mean
you saw her in Black Klansman
she's a
black
power
oh
that's how
that's how it sounded
she had a fine husband
oh wait
no they broke up
I don't know who she's with now
because I'm trying to figure it out actually
I have a
yeah I don't know who she's with now
but
but no I would say Laura
she would be fine
but I think
it's in that universe
yeah
Zoe Kravitz
you want that
you guys are too
you guys are too similar
in real life
no
yeah you are
no
because she's
I've only heard
she's very
well she
and she is
and she really is
and she should be
like she's allowed to be
totally like
she is
but
and she's always at that damn theater
and I'm like
Hunter
in a movie
so calling you back
to be in a movie
yes yes yes
but I also think about her
her little like
this was my dress
at the Academy Awards
where apparently
assaulting people
on stage now
yeah
you would never be that stupid
that was a crazy quote
private
put the phone away
okay so we famously
survived our 20s
barely
by the skin of my
chinny chin chin
by the skin of my teeth
is what I was about to suggest
oh yeah that's it
is that it
yeah yeah
that's it
I think
just watch someone be like
it's so wrong
that's not it
I'm just a girl
I mean come on
we went to Everson College
come on
you can't
come on
okay but we escaped our 20s
what would you say
are like any major lessons
or things to never do again
oh my gosh
that you have
for the group
I don't
I honestly
I think I was so like
hyper
and always like
trying to like
do stuff all the time
I'm like
I could have just like
you know
relaxed my shoulders
a little bit
in my 20s
and also
don't take shots at the bar
take shots at home
yeah
take shots at home
take shots at home
before the bar
because if you take shots at the bar
you're going to spend too much money
and you're going to fully black out
if you're at home
you can kind of have some time to recover
but yeah
our advice
hey don't do it in the house
keep it in the house
that's all we ask
like totally fine
save your money
I would say
two very opposite lessons
20s
date like
date that bad person
that you shouldn't be dating
you know what I mean
like date someone
that you're like
oh it's risky
like go
because it's
I do think it
I
I don't know
I am grateful
for all the
what the hell
was I thinking
pussy whipped
dick whipped
one time
then I got over that stuff
but like
I think
you
what's that thing
you always say
that I always mess up
you go
you go through
what you go through
God brings you to it
to bring you through it
and sometimes you have to
like you know
you know you always have a friend
that like dating this person
that you're like
I mean
not be an abusive relationship
obviously
nothing like that
but like
you have a friend
that's like
she's only
she's going to let herself out
she's going to have to go through
it
we're going to see her
on the other side
we'll be here
when she's ready
but you had relationships
where I was like
I don't know
if we're going to see
the other side of this
because I'm like
oh God
here they come
I'm like
oh can you
can you leave her
at home please
like I'm sorry
keep her away
like
that's secret love
like
and I'll name them
that's private love
I said
that's not for
general consumption
like
I think this is
at least I did too
I did it too many times
I over indexed
I really learned the lesson
for all of us
but I do think
like
if you go through one
you just really like
I don't know
I think it's fine
to date that one person
that's like
this is risky
I think sometimes
you have to get it
out of your system
you have to like
make a mistake
and then be like
oh so I'm actually
never doing that again
and I don't know
I feel like
and then we don't
as a friend
and this is like
part two
you have to kind of
let them
and like again
as long as everyone's safe
in terms of like
no like
abuse of anything
but like you kind of
have to let them
move through emotions
and just be there
to hold them
when it
when it eventually does
come back
and then you be a black mom
and you say
I told you so
so I did see that coming
and I love you
I told you this was gonna happen
I also think
you know
whatever happens
after
whatever anyone says
after like
two o'clock in the morning
don't take it seriously
like it doesn't matter
it's you know
like the idea of like
yeah
drunk
words
or like true
or something
it's like
they literally never are
like
never with me
because I don't even remember
some of them
I'm like
couldn't remember me
it's
always just like
don't take it too seriously
like it's okay
well I actually
that's a big like
relationship one too
and I think it could be
applied to friendship
it's like
no good conversation
happens after like
midnight 1am
like you're never gonna get
to the source of it
or meet
like go to bed
unless you're
in someone's
backyard
patio
and you're sitting
on those plastic chairs
cause that's when
the real stuff comes out
you sound like you
barbecuing
you got
you got a scar
what are you talking about
I have my grilling sandals
you just
you have my grilling sandals
what can I say
exactly
I just saw a
very clear picture
and it was so beautiful
the only time I ever
thought about using AI
was to generate
what I just saw
I love you
but that's my big
I would say
friendship wise
it's like
date your friends
date the hell out of your friends
okay
I think like everyone
not like date them literally
like treat them like
relationships
like romantic relationships
yeah yeah yeah
I feel like I
learned that later
I was about to say
okay Serena Vanderwoodson
like you're just gonna
go through the whole crew
crew love
yeah get ran through
that's what
not no no
low key not no
uh
it'll teach you some stuff
um
but anyway
you'll find out
who's really friends
um
okay what age
what age did you enjoy the most
and what age
can you not wait to be
um
what age I enjoy the most
maybe like a
26 27
was really fun
28
it's loaded
like how many
um
okay
28 was tough
uh
27 26
I felt like
I
I
was just
I don't know
just saying like
yes to everything
and being like
I think like the most like
the loudest version of myself
and that was really fun
even though I think
I'm doing that now still
yeah
maybe the best
is yet to come
uh but I can't wait
to be like
I was talking to my granny
the other day
and I was like
I'm gonna kill it
when I'm 70
I'm gonna be on
you can't tell me
nothing when I'm 70
you couldn't tell me
nothing when I was 7
but you couldn't tell me
nothing when I'm 70
I'm gonna be speeding
I'm gonna be doing
what I want
I'm gonna be
speeding
speeding
speeding is so random
I know
like you're dying to speed
right now
I'm dying to speed
need for speed
she said okay
I live in New York
I'm never in a car
relax
she's gonna speed
over here
like what
I don't know
I just I feel like
it'll be so nice to be so
I just love talking to a woman
that's so settled into herself
and I was like
I think that
that's gonna really be me
specifically at 70
yeah
that I read this one interview
with Cher
around the time of her
Broadway show opening
it was in the Times
and
she was asked like
what do you think
young Cher
would think of you now
like in your 70s
and she said
it doesn't matter
what she thinks
like she only wants to be this
she would be so
just happy
that she made it here
she would not
be in a place to judge
and I think a lot about that
when it's like
what is like your inner child
what does like my 17 year old self
like want
it's like
girl she didn't know anything then
she doesn't
don't ask her
like please
please please
I really enjoyed though being
I think I really enjoyed
being like 17
because I felt like
I was so
like I just like
want to watch movies all day
and that was really fun
and then also like
drink Mike's Heart Lemonade
with my friends
and that was like
Mike's Heart Lemonade
oh yeah
you back on that
plastic chair huh
you sitting outside
soaking up the sun
we were girls together
no
you were uncles together
that was you as a kid
oh my god
and then
and then I think
I can't wait to be like
I can't wait to be like 54
that's like a powerful age for me
yeah
and honestly
once I saw Meryl Streep and Lindsay Lohan
on the cover of that one W magazine.
literally us
I literally felt like oh my god I cannot wait to be like 60
like that's gonna be so fun
like you're still beautiful
in fact hotter actually
I love a maternal figure
anyway that's all the time we have today
so question for the culture
what were you like as a child
what age did you love most
what age can you not wait to be
I know and also you know what we should do
we know what we should circle back on
when I was thinking about you as a teen
I was like oh I remember your journals
and I remember some of my journals
and maybe we do an episode of revealing some of those
that penmanship
that pen goes crazy
it was shocking
we might have to do a specific like teen hunter painting
and see we're gonna be careful on that one
and also when did you know your best friend was your best friend
oh yeah
I think that's a sweet one
oh my god that is sweet
a little call to action
you and your best friend should listen to this
and be like which one are you
are you type A or type B
do you have a fully developed brain or a mentally ill brain

weight that won't budge

FAQs
I was loud, joyful, and expressive from childhood, often coming out with energy and joy. My mom even thought I was 'a little strange' when I came out with confidence. I’ve maintained this same energy into adulthood, which is a consistent part of my personality.
Yes, we share many qualities, especially in how we observe and react to the world. My mom was always perceptive—she knew about my friends, my habits, and even my childhood choices long before I did. It’s a strong connection that feels deep and meaningful.
I was deeply influenced by 'Ever After' and 'Raven-Symoné' era shows. I loved 'Raven' and her style, especially the way she played with her hair. These shows shaped my sense of self and style, and I still feel their influence today.
My best friends included Ashton, a red-haired girl who was a bit of a rebel, and Steven, who was my first gay crush. These relationships taught me about loyalty, self-expression, and the importance of being true to myself—even when it was uncomfortable.
My first job was at a retail store, where I worked shifts at Zara and Urban Outfitters. I appreciated the intergenerational interactions and real-life conversations that came from working with people of all ages. It taught me the value of authentic human connection in service jobs.
Don’t take shots at the bar—take them at home. Drinking at home allows you to recover and reflect before you’re too drunk to think clearly. It’s a simple but powerful lesson that saved me from regretful decisions.
