‘Friday the 13th’ With Bill Simmons, Chris Ryan, and Van Lathan

The podcast explores the origins and cultural impact of the *Friday the 13th* franchise, beginning with its inspiration from *Halloween* and the strategic decision by Sean Cunningham to create a yearly slasher series. The first film is celebrated for its authentic 1980s aesthetic, blending teenage innocence with moral decline, and establishing key horror tropes like the camp setting, unkillable killer, and a sudden shift from calm to chaos. The introduction of Jason Voorhees as a mythic, almost supernatural figure is highlighted as pivotal, setting the foundation for the franchise's long-term success. The film’s marketing, including a disturbing 30-second ad, and its cultural resonance—particularly among youth—helped normalize horror as a mainstream genre. The narrative structure, featuring a slow build followed by violent escalation, is noted as a hallmark of effective horror storytelling. The film’s most significant contribution is the introduction of Jason’s mother as a complex, capable, and ruthless female antagonist, challenging traditional slasher dynamics. The final scene, especially the canoe ending, is described as a groundbreaking moment in horror, creating lasting shock and influencing future films. The discussion also touches on the genre’s broader significance, including its role in reflecting societal anxieties and the rise of violent, visceral content in the 1980s. The podcast ultimately positions *Friday the 13th* as a foundational horror franchise that redefined slasher cinema through innovation, cultural relevance, and enduring narrative power.

The rewatchables is brought to by the Ring or podcast network where you can find, I don't know, nine bandlatham podcasts, higher learning. Yeah, higher learning ring or verse, like, higher learning ring or verse, tailgate. CR, you still doing stuff for everyone's in a while, like I like to, you know, I'm really busy right in my memoirs right now, but the watch is, is my, my primary podcast. What would your sub stack be called? Brian Curtis launch one. It's like instead of roll the calls for you, maybe roll the pods, maybe roll the pods. Yes. Fuel the jet. I mean, roll the, roll the pods is good. I like that. Roll the pods. Yeah. Save it for the pods. I'm going to be crank daddy. I don't know if crank daddy would be the right URL I want on the internet. I could thought, uh, so we did a horror movie last week. We did text chance on mascara and now we're doing another one. So somehow we've never done Friday the 13th and it's next. So Friday the 13th, it wouldn't be my first choice to do this out of the Friday the 13th franchises, but I felt like we had to, I felt like you have to tell the origin story because it's really where this is going to lead to his part for and Jason takes Manhattan, which might get the funniest movie the 80s, I told you, I think it's one of the funniest movies I've ever watched. Love the movie deeply. We can impertinence. Jason takes Manhattan is just a rare list of commoners. This is one of those strange franchises that to me like comes alive, obviously in the second one. I think the second one almost stands in as like, let's redo the first one, but make the the bad guy even better with more money. Yeah, yeah. A little bit more money, but I think it finds its legs at four and four is downright good. Right. Four is awesome. Four is what we couldn't do for the final chapter would have been tough, but I'm glad we're starting with the beginning because I think you can see it's cool to go back to 1980. I have watched this one in a while, but yeah, I'm happy to be doing it. This is my favorite slasher franchise. It's unique though because Jason Voorhees isn't a mid major when it comes to being a horror guy. He's a blue blood. He's Duke, Kentucky, he's a true blue blood when you're talking about that and he's not in this movie. And like the it's almost like a prequel. Jason has, we know him does not really appear until way into three, right? So if there was a different universe where Jason Voorhees is in the first one, this movie would be the movie that they would make coming back. Let me tell you the story of how. Yeah, this should have been almost part four. We're going backwards. Yeah, right. And the origin serve this mom Wikipedia writes a group of teenage camp counselors are murdered one by one by an unknown killer while they attempt to reopen an abandoned summer camp with a tragic past. Fucking chess. Yeah. Go for it. Great. Let's just go. Because if I was running a movie studio and somebody came in and just read that sentence, I'd be like done. Well, the great thing about this franchise to be is that they were like, we just need to have one of these coming out like every year because it's the title tells teens it's time to go to the movies. Right. It's time to go see some nudity and violence and get your rocks off and it's such a dependable staple of the movie industry. I don't know that we really have it. Well, we'll go into a lot of the Halloween ripoff stuff and how that was the origin of this. But Friday the 13th as a horror movie gimmick, also really smart. Because Halloween is like, oh, that's a day. It's a little creepy. That's that could be a recurring thing. And then the guy Sean Cunningham who created this whole thing was like Friday the 13th. The 80s had this thing to wear 80s late 70s like whatever had this thing to wear. Okay. I mean, Friday the 13th going to sleep. All of these things that have like this, like little eerie miss associated with it. Let's take these situations and then put a bunch of dead teenagers, boom, you got yourself a franchise. Didn't work with some other versions of it. What was it? Prom night? It didn't let happy birthday to me. Terror train. Yeah. There were a couple of them when they couldn't pay off the premise. Yeah. But you know, the OGs, they seem like they pretty much got it done somehow. They never really unlock Christmas. They tried all these different ways. Yeah. I mean, there's a good criticism. There's been a lot of Christmas horror. But never a franchise. Like Christmas is good. I love, I like Krampus. There's a problem. I didn't saw that. Yeah. I like horror at Christmas. Let me use your hands. Christmas is happy. Santa Claus. Yes. Having a good time. I do like that movie where Santa Claus goes. John Waker starts killing all those people. What was that violent night? I saw that a couple years ago. Yeah. Silent night. That's silent night. Silent night is the hardest. I think you're thinking of David Harbor movie. Yeah. Yeah. But I don't want to be scary at Christmas with my family, my little nephews and shit like that. That's not fun. I have two different Friday, 13th stories. The first one is I wasn't really allowed to go see these movies in the theater because I was on the 10. But the commercial ran and you can watch it. And you were allowed to see Texas Chainsaw Masker, weren't you? This is right around 81 was when I was like, fuck it. You're taking me. But this comes out. Two parents? May 80. My dad. I was like, we're going. You got to go. Yeah, okay, cool. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. But there was two commercials spring summer 1980 that scared the fuck out of me. One was Friday 13th where they just show each murder. It was like one, two, three. And they just rattled them off. You can watch it on YouTube. A lot of it. It's a 30 second ad. And they show every dead person. It gives away the entire movie. And it was also scary. And it was one of those things. If I was watching TV at 10 o'clock in the night, and it started, I was like, ah. And then the other one was the shining, which we talked about when the shining had a really scary 30 second ad. So anyway, I was scared of this movie from that. Okay. The second story, I wasn't allowed to see it. My mom and my future stepdad went to see it in Stanford, Connecticut and told me this story at the end when Jason climbs out of the boat. They were in this movie theater and when he climbed out of the boat, this guy and from them stood up, screamed, get the fuck out and started running out of the theater. And went up the aisle. So they told me this story and I was like, how scary. So then when I saw it, it wasn't as scary as, oh, they ruined, they stepped on that last thing for you. They didn't tell me what it was, but they told me something happened. I was so scared that this guy jumped in the air and ran up the aisle. And so that was how it got built up in my head. So 1980 horror. Yeah. The shining dressed to kill the fog and prom night. Motel hell. Terror train motel. How New Year's evil maniac, New Year's evil funeral home, dressed to kill the young, but do you have an sense that this is like this huge wave of horrors? Yeah, because dressed to kill and the shining were the mainstream ones, so the palm of Kubrick. But so those were covered. And then Angie Dickinson had a body double and dressed to kill. And that was like a big story about whether it was her naked eye. Which is pretty famous. So you had those. Then you had the Friday the 13th, oh, my God, is this going to be a new trend now of young people getting killed in these movies because it did, it did well. And I just remember 80 is like just a ton of horror being scared. My earliest memories of this franchise, because it's franchise over movie, is that it was just a step above pornography, but was distributed in much the same way, you know? That it was. And the mafia probably had a stake in some way. Exactly. Older sibling had to go rent it for you because like there were enough mom and pop video stores back then that they would be like, you can't your seven or 10 or whatever you can't, you can't rent this. And then it would be like sleepover or fodder like, you know, overall going to get together and watch Friday. I think the first one I probably saw was three, but actually what was the, no, it would probably be like three was the three day. It might have been later than that then, but like all of them were in circulation. And I can't remember when I saw this one particular because I think for the longest time, I was like, Friday 13th is the Jason series. Yeah. Yeah. By the time I got to this actual movie, it was hard for me to appreciate it. Like I saw this one. These movies have been MTV fried by the time I came to them by the time I was, I'm getting into Freddie. There was a. One hell. They Will Smith did a Freddie song, remember the Will Smith Freddie song, Nightmare on My Street and Will Smith. That song was bad. It was bad. But at the same time, when I thought it was awesome, Will Smith and Freddie is on the same record together. Will Smith featuring Freddie. So by the time I see this one, we shouldn't know with Will Smith at that point. No, no, no, no, no, no. Jason becomes this mindless, almost like super villain like Thanos, like who can't be killed. We get killed at the end of two. And then he just comes back. He comes back in the whole thing, but this one is like a real meat and potatoes, almost elevated horror movie. It's actually it's pretty patient. It's very, very true to the late 70s early 80s. Like, yeah, I feel like meatballs was as much of an influence on this as as Halloween. Yeah, I think carrying meatballs were equally influential as Halloween. on us. Yeah, and it's like camp counselors. The look, there's that specific late 70s, early 80s look, like the lead of this movie who plays Alice just has that Christy McDaco here. It's almost like that helmet, part big. I don't even know how to describe it. Like, nobody in the planet would have this. Who's the last person on this haircut? Who went for it? Like, if Liz came home with this haircut, what would you do? She's out. She's out. That's the lead of divorce. Just get the fuck out. Like, while I do, how did that haircut happen? Because the only people that had it were like people like this actress in the movie and then like, you were there. I just don't understand what they're thinking. Y'all, I mean, I look at them now. I'm looking at her right now. Farah. And she still look like some of the baddest shit I ever seen before. In fact, it looks like she's looking at it's hard to concentrate. I moved it because we had to make room for Michael Myers. I think we have the right camera blocking. Well, whatever, but she's looking at me right now and it's hard to, I like that type of shit. These are the types of white women that when it was around Dallas, era, that's what it was really our principal. Yeah. So we had that going and, and you know, Charlie's Angels and that whole look. And then we had this other like weird boat cut. But you know what these movies would do though? That was interesting. Like, these films are almost like little commentaries on teenage innocence. And obviously there's a big trope here. But the kids here, they look like young and impressionable. But there's always something that they're doing that's a little bit off. So they're playing Monopoly, which it would be a bummer if someone killed up a bunch of kids while they were playing Monopoly. They're being like young or whatever. But these kids are playing shit Monopoly. Smoking, smoking, smoking a little breath. So now they deserve it. Yeah. And they're having premarital sex. Right. But they got to go. They look so young like the one and earlier in the movie, she's hitchhiking. What's she doing? So I stopped this dangerous. I was always trying to interpret like that trope because I think for people who were probably around the age of the people in this movie, when you go see that movie, you're kind of like, yes, what like teenagers and young people do is smoke a little grass and fuck and hook up with each other. Yeah. But like, when you're older, I don't know about stripping up with you. And you're, and you're just getting into like Reagan America and like rebuilding this morality about like the country that's scandalizing. And there's probably a part of a maybe like a conservative audience watching it that thinks they're kind of getting what they deserve in some ways because they're being immoral without a doubt. Yeah. Like your killer, even Freddie, I'm just last time I mentioned Freddie, their parents burned him alive. Yeah. And so his revenge, his vengeance on this entire group of people is because of some fucked up shit that happened. Now Freddie was a bad guy. But that a great guy. Not a good dude. But like in the lore of the story, there's almost like a reason for this. Sure. Yeah. So this movie that you had seen him before. I've never seen any of them. And I didn't, other than Jason being a famous character, I didn't know anything about them. Were you like, I was promised Jason? Yes, I was. Okay. It's quite a swerve. Yeah. But this turned into it, he became, it's Freddie, Jason and Myers are the big three, right? Is there a fourth pin head pin head in the mix? I think those are the big three. If we're doing about Rushmore, I don't, I think it's, you're really forcing it with the fourth. I'm interesting. But it, well, I mean, if you're doing a mile rush going to it, so if they do amount Rushmore, there has to be a fourth. Right. So that it kind of has to be forcing it. I just felt like Chuck is a force. Probably. I mean, I, I had a lot of shocker was kind of like my, uh, my Jamaican's Russell. Like, I had a lot of high hopes for him coming out of school. Thank you for that. Do you remember shocker? I don't remember shocker. I feel like if you have to make the case really strongly, it's probably not my own. Hold on. Because the first three are like leather heads just 80s. This is just 80s. I don't know. No, I let the head gets no love here. He's like one of the other face leather face, leather face, leather face, leather face, leather face, leather face. I think he, because he really has a strong true movie run. And then goes through, uh, goes through like a, you know, like a long period of dormancy or at least like, so leather face, Myers, Krueger, Jason. I like his mind. Krueger, Jason. The only thing about leather face that takes him away is they keep trying to get it restarted. And it's hard to get the people back interested in leather face. Leather face didn't endure like somebody's other guy. Yes. They also, I mean, I don't think that they ever unlocked like what's, what's leather face is trauma, you know, the way they do with Jason being bullied or Freddie being away. You know what? He was just the guy that liked to be at his own house. Don't come in. I leave me the problem. Get this one confident. Yeah. He's introvert. Who are the pretenders though? Who are the, who's the next class? So then the next class would be just eighties. Well, no, just period who the next class would be the fucking leather car. Well, it's ghost face from scream, ghost face from scream. It's not a single person that goes face is actually shot out to ghost face the rapper. You could argue that ghost face is actually above, but it's always a different person. I say, I feel like ghost face and the, I know it you did last summer guy and those are all the second generation of these movies. Cannibal actor Pennywise. Pennywise by BWP. Pennywise is intriguing. But it's all a TV movie. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, Pennywise is fucking Friday. He's very Friday. You know what else is frightening? How long it to us? I don't, I think that movie's still going. I took a bit of the screening. I was like four and a half hours long. Well, we can talk about Jason the second. We have to talk about how this was the most unabashed rip-off movie probably of all time. The producer Sean Cunningham saw Halloween was successful. Came up with this idea, put an ad in variety in the next summer saying, hey, I'm going to make this movie called Friday the 13th is anyone want to fund it. And it was basically like, yeah, we're ripping off Halloween. We're going to try to make one a year. There's a new killer. Got an ad agency to do it. It was basically Halloween crossing meatballs. Ends up getting the money. Ends up making it. And the whole time is like, yeah, we're ripping off Halloween. He probably like if he was around today would just be like a tech entrepreneur, but that is a bad story. That is such a crazy bet on yourself story. I'm going to go to the trades and take out an ad for a non-existent movie and see if it creates enough buzz. He gets credit, I think, for realizing the repeatability of the gimmick, right? He comes out of Halloween, sees how successful it is. And he's like, I got to come up with my own version of this and I'm just going to keep making them. And there's come out every year. Such an interesting sliding door after both Halloween and this where both of the people who directed these movies and I think some of the people behind like making them were like, there's no sequel. Like Michael died at the end, you know, Jason is a figment of people's imaginations. Like it's over. And what they had thought was maybe we could make this like an anthology where like it's just something else scary happening on this date on Halloween or on Friday the 13th, but they happened into this Jason thing and revived it just the same way they just kept pushing. Well, you know why? Because three was when Jason, I saw two in the theater. I made my dad go. He was so mad. Cleveland Circle. We saw that one. But three, I saw in Connecticut, three days during this brief window when people thought three days was going to happen. Movie, the movie was, it was badass. People are rooting for Jason. It was a weird sensation. It's the one that they cast in the theater where you're like, I can't wait. Yeah, it's like, fucking go get this. There's like a biker gang in the movie. Yeah. They put intentionally horrible people in there. And they just wanted the audience to have Jason want to go. Like I don't like, like don't touch a hair on these people's heads and two. I like the people too. Also, like some of this stuff has to do just with the necessity to keep these movies going. Like the films are successful. Yeah. So what can you do if you're not going to do the anthology thing, which is what they wanted to do? What do you, what can you do to keep people coming back? The easiest thing to do is to put somebody at the center of the movie that is unkillable and magnetic and really, really scary. So people will keep coming back. So how would you compare and contrast with NBA? What if having your, having your star player who's introduced last and you just, you kind of need that or you don't feel like a real NBA franchise? Right. You need your guy. You need your Kate Cunningham, your freedom. Sure. Whoever. And that's what the horror movie is. If you don't have that guy and it becomes amorphous, I think it's really hard to have a franchise with the hornets. Yeah. It's like a scream kind of figured it out where they would have a different villain every time, but there's some sort of connective tissue. Yeah. So vast. And then there was always something tied to Sydney. There was also the meta quality of those first grip of screen movies where I was like, there was all this like reflexive like we're watching the stab trailers and stuff like that. So I mean, those movies are so much smarter than these movies, but this movie is like, this is a what would happen if movie? So I'm just going to work at this camp, campsite for the summer with these other counselors. What would happen if the fucking generator gets turned off and, you know, Bill goes to the bathroom and doesn't come back and now I'm in this cabin and there's nobody was a fucking moral. Yeah. And everybody was as stupid as possible. Right. Yeah. So he sells this for 1.5 million after it costs like 600K. Paramount buys it and does this huge marketing campaign. They did the one sheet that the 32nd commercial and they're just going for kids and kids to sneak into the movie teenagers and young adults and it works. And we end up with 10 sequels. And they knew like they were like, they knew people are going to go insane when they say at some point wasn't there a bidding war? There's a bidding war. Yeah. The movie made almost $60 million. nuts. It was 1980s, 18th biggest movie and it cost nothing to make and it had a bunch of actors we've basically never seen again. Yes, which allows you to kill them all off. Nobody's going into it and being like, well, you can't kill Deborah Winger. You know, like, yes, she's going to live because they want it. Sally Field and they could not get her, which forced them once again necessity into casting unknowns, which means you can kill them in more violent and grandiose ways, which is what the crowd wants anyway. And you don't know what's coming. When there's a star, you know, they're going to be the last one. You like this. You have no idea who's going to live. Who's not? Who's going to be the last one? You think the last one's going to be the first one, the head checker. Yeah. It's like, she's cute. They're not going to kill her. Yeah. They fucking take her out. She's one of ones. But why every time I'll go back and look at him, I'm like, yeah, look at her. I have some thoughts on what I do like her. She has a little Karen Allen tour. Yeah. A little Karen Allen. A lot of Karen. A little starman. So before we get into the movie, your favorite is still Freddie. Oh, yeah, those guys without doubt. Freddie has the most personality. Freddie's the most powerful. Freddie's the scariest to me. So I'm a Myers guy. And see her as a Jason guy. Big J. Yeah. Big J. It's weird that we have three different ones. So why are you a Jason guy? Ultimately, I think it's the, especially the settings. I really like love the repeatability of like the campsite. After you're these idiots, go back to this place that is referred to as camp blood that has no law enforcement. It's going to be fun. It's mythologically damned to hell. And they're just like, no, we're going to open up a like a teaching school for counselors or I'm going to rent this one out. And like we're going to party next to these kids and for and it's like this is just hell on earth. You guys keep coming up here and keep dying. But I love, I love how the first hour of these movies always feels. It just just like you get lulled into this sense of like, oh, this is so nice. That's a nice peaceful yeah, she's going to take a skinny dip. And then, and then I love all hell breaks loose. And then I kind of enjoy the challenge of trying to piece together the narrative once they're like actually Jason is this and Tommy Jarvis does that and Tina does this. It's it's entertaining. It's pretty good. I think it has the most good movies of these franchises. But I would say Halloween's heights and Texas chainsaws heights are way higher. I think he I think he has pretty and interesting. I like one two four. He has pretty in the headlock. Get out of here. One two four and H2O for Halloween. Okay. And then I think the first remake that Blum has did. So probably five. I like. So you think there's more than five thirteenths. I like one two three and H2O of Halloween. I enjoy talking about other Halloween movies. Yeah. And I I have mixed feelings about the Blum House ones. Four is going to jump out and fucking jump on you. And this is one of my favorite pods we've done. Yes, that was awesome. So 13th the first four. And then Manhattan's amazing. Yeah, Manhattan. I think those are the five. I like lives. I get Manhattan. When you when you I can't wait to do Manhattan. First reached out. I thought we were going to do Manhattan. And Manhattan is just absurdly blissfully perfect. Now I remember that was one of the going of the sewers. Well, we were talking about just being the first combo rewatchables where we would do multiple what we did one two together. Yeah, we might be able to do two and three together. Just team them up. Yeah. Ebert, no written review. Oh, my God. But he really, really truly hated this movie. And they crushed it on the TV show called the exploitation movie. They braided it. They were saying how this was training audiences to root for the killer. Everything they said was 100% true. Siskel, when he wrote about it, he hated it so much that he intentionally gave away the ending in the second paragraph. Doesn't he also he was like Jason's mom did it. I don't want this movie. So that's what have the sense. Wasn't he like and also write letters to the screenwriter who lives in this town or something? He gave the paramount address so people could send letters to try to stop it. And then he said that Betsy Palmer plays Jason's mom. He's like, I won't give you her address, but let's just say she lives in row eight and tough. Put this in his written review. But as part of these movies, as they come out, there's a permission structure to kill teenagers in the the glorious ways. Like the reason why this movie can come off of Halloween is because, okay, cool. Well, like Halloween, much teenagers get killed, whatever. So we're going to kill teenagers, except what we're going to do is kill them in all types of different gory ways. So you could see, particularly at a time where the moral majority is starting to gain steam and all of that stuff, how they would be like a visceral response. But Cisco and Ebert were exactly like conservative Republicans. I know, but I'm saying it's still though. And Ebert like Chainsaw. I know, but like this one right here is for all I love the movie, but I've grown to love it, but it's gratuitous. It's like, yeah, it's the whole decade is gratuitous. Of course, but I think they saw the future. Yeah. Yes. They saw the picture because there's an amazing compilation on YouTube of all of their Friday, the 13th reviews across the franchise. I watch it. And it's just two guys with their dicks increasingly caught in in zippers. But they're just like it to part four or so. Like both I can't believe this is what my job is, but also just like this apoplectic anger that this is what young people are watching. It's the equipment of like in 2013, if Zach Lowe had decided three pointers, we're going to ruin the NBA. And was just killing Steph Curry. And was like this, he shot 13 today. This is going to bastard. What's happening to my game? Yeah, that's what Ebert did. That's what they were like. Jackson was right. Yeah, they just fucking hated this. Jackson was right. So it's interesting. 13th, Brad 13th, the motive is these camp counselors fucked up and this kid drowned. But they fucked up like 30 years ago. So now it's all camp counselors fall going forward that this happened. Right. Halloween. It's just the lights are on and nobody's home with this dude. Yeah. He's just purely in simple evil. You looking at his eyes, it's the devil's eyes, the darkest eyes. And that's the premise of that. And then Freddie is, Freddie was a chalmalester who was on trial for it. Beat it. Parents got together. And either he beat it or he was going to beat it. Parents got together burned him alive. And so he made a deal with a dream demon to haunt their children, their progeny and perpetuity and kill them. So I would argue Freddie, probably the worst of the three to empathize with as the killer. I mean, I think I think LF is really hard in Texas. You know, it's just I know that you're probably somebody who wants his own privacy and doesn't want people unexpectedly showing up. It's a private guy. What are you doing? What are you messing with? That's my hottest take for chance. Don't go into the guy's house. By the way, he lives. By the way, he lives in the middle of nowhere. Yeah. So if you're him, you're thinking, what are you doing here? You must mean me harm. Yeah. Yeah. You're gonna get the hammer right in the front. We're gonna take a break. Come back and hit the movie. This episode is brought to you by 20th century studios, Whalefall, in theaters this Friday, based on the acclaimed book by Pulitzer Prize winner Daniel Kraus. It tells the tale of a diver fighting for his life after being swallowed, you guessed it, by a whale. Experience the ultimate survival story that's unlike any movie you've ever seen before. Don't miss Whalefall in theaters this Friday. Most rewatchable scene, the opening scene said 1958. Every time they do scenes like this, you just think like how much of us to suck to live in in the late 50s where it's like let's get a guitar and sing terrible songs. Wait, they're singing like a Bible song. They're singing Michael Rowling, Row the Boat of Shore. You're just getting them hot and horny. Yeah. By the Boat of Shore and say one more time. Who wants some more spritzer? Yeah. But then the mom turns out it's Jason's mom, not a huge fan. Yeah. And it's uptaken him down. We don't get the sex scene, man. No, always it's like a little meat left on the bone there in a real way. Literally. 58, that seems like maybe if they're singing that song, it's maybe a Bible camp. So religious camp. So maybe he's only hoping a little bit over the shirt stuff there. Yeah, it's just like rub on it a little bit. Yeah, just see what we can do. Maybe maybe sneak a dry hump and OTP maybe. Yeah, T.P. What's T.P? Over the pants OTP over the T.P. You know, OTP H.J. You never heard of that. OTP H.J. No. This does it. You know, that OTP H.J. No, I'm from we just go right graduate straight to the floor. OTP H.J. So you mean to tell me you come from such a folk, future culture. No, you guys are getting over the pants and tops. But you know what? I do think we could get OTP H.J. into the rewatchables. That's great. We're it's like dead of thieves too, kind of an OTP H.J. You know, without Pablo and 50. Discuss. You know, it's fun and wedding crashes. OTP H.J. Yeah. OTP H.J. Okay. Try humping different different categories. Different categories. Okay. Way different. Yeah. We had girls pregnant in the eighth grade mad road. So it was different. Annie's car ride to Camp Blood. Yeah. The journey to Crystal Lake. Yeah. And the guy tells her quit. Stop. Get out. Stop. It's Camp Blood. Get the fuck out. Yeah. Go always a good scene in a horror movie like this, where you have somebody who lives in the town, who peacefully co-exist with where the evil is and they're just like just jungler Ralph. Yeah. Crazy Ralph. Yeah. No, not crazy Ralph. The guy gives the right. - The truck driver. - Truck driver guy who grabs her ass when she's getting in the truck. - Yes. - The freaky creep, you know what I mean? You know what's funny? It's like, this is always interesting to me. Let's say, 'cause I left Sikamore to come here. Let's say, when I left Sikamore, - That's our office. - Shout out to Sikamore. Let's say if I was getting into my car, somebody went, "You're not going to Simmons' house, are you?" Simmons' house is where people go to die. - I would not be at this bitch right here. You'd be like, "I'm gonna do it." - You'd be like, "I'm gonna do it." You'd be like, "I'm gonna do it." Every once in a while, we lost a kid. I don't even know if it was actually true or not, but we all knew the house, and we all thought it happened, and that's just the way it went. There's, I mean, it's funny that this is the, like Friday 13th is the opposite. She's almost like enticed more to go to the camp when she hears the bullshit about Camp Blood. We had urban myths in Philly, like the Taney Park gang. It was like, nobody went within 10 blocks as Taney Park, 'cause that, I don't even think it really existed. Or if it did, it was like, one kid got his bike stolen once there. But it was like, that stuff scared people off like in a huge way. So the idea of being like, "I can't blood. I'm sure it's fine." Also though, like with this, with this character dying, it is an interesting thing to get the kill and start it with somebody that's not integral to the main narrative, to the blood though. Like, yeah, this is how serious this is, that the lady just goes, "Okay, you're here, you're dead." The moment that that happens, you know how much danger all of the other people that you're gonna have to meet, aren't you? People talk about how TV shows and movies now have to slam some set piece or action scene or murder or whatever into the first five minutes of the show or movie you're watching to grab people's attention. But I think that's kind of why they did this here in 1980, 'cause the sequels, especially two and three, open with the last 10 minutes of the previous movie to get a kill in. 'Cause the rest, like the next 40 minutes are basically kids hanging out. Right. And that would have been what this movie was if we don't get any, any got here. It's just like kids hanging around nailing, and stuff, and even leading up to that, the tension, you know she's in danger. Of course. They're also giving you some exposition about how dangerous things are, how to town, regards the place. That's all good story stuff that just gets to a pretty graphic death of her throat being cut like right there. Well, it's the second hitchhiking. So you think she gets away from the first guy? So she's all right. Right. Then the next person, who she seems very comfortable with, and then I always like when it's like, wasn't that the sign back there and the car just keeps going? So when you saw one, did you know that it was Jay's mom was the filling? So I never saw, I saw two firsts. Two was the first one I ever saw, but two tells you what happened in one. So I was fine. Okay, pretty good. It's interesting in the theater that that's such a zag that it's the mom. But now that we know this for 45 years, you kind of take it for granted. Well, it also makes total sense, because everybody greets the killer from the POV of the killer. They greet them. They're like, hey, hey, what are you doing out here? Whereas it a bit of been a water log corpse, Jason. Yeah. You would have been fucking. Probably not driving that. And after a while, you know, we've got a lot of stuff of legend because Jason becomes such a legendary character that like you're in middle school and there's some fucking film broke hit that goes in the first movie. It's actually fucking not Jason. It's Jason's mom. Oh, dog. We had us. We had him even. Don't get me started. Annie's hitchhiking. That's the next one. We get Jack and Marcy buying it. Jack is kept making its character. Couple of good deaths. I always like to through the bed death is always a good one. Aaron, which I think they filmed. They had him just put his head over the thing with his body and then they put the fake bodies so they could ram it through. In Texas, Shane saw I ranked the, the deaths I would most want to have. I think Jack died pretty happy. He's just gone in a second. Yeah, true. And just ticking a hit. Yeah. Everything is going right for him. Arrow through the throat dead. Like, as long as it's a quick death. I think you're probably like that's about as happy as a guy can get. Where would you go on the net on Marcy get in the axe to the forehead? That's a disappointing one because she saw it coming. Yeah. The last thing she sees is like the scariest thing in the world. I always sometimes they have reactions in these horror movies when they realized they're about to be killed and they go. And then they just get an axe. I just don't feel like that would be much. Like, wouldn't you be like trying to figure out how to fight back? Well, I mean, that's this is the thing with Jason's mom. Yeah. So, Alice, Alice starts like, just gives her a little kick into shins. Yeah. And it's like, I got her. I seem to be the only one that was up to the challenge because like Jason's mom is one of the greatest, she's frustrated. Yeah. She's one of the greatest female athletes we've ever seen. Yeah. Number one, she's been killed since 58. Yeah. She's like, essentially Derek Henry. She's, she continues to age and get better at killing over time. She's a versatile killer. She's essentially Derek. I had stuff about this. I know. She throws a body through the window. That's fucking hard. It's not to get air or shit. Right. So she's versatile. She's deadly and then also doesn't get blood on her. She's got a nice clean blue sweater. She also got some mental game tour. Because by the time we get to the end, she's like, you know, I've killed enough. Now it's time for me to get my shit off. I'm gonna let you know why this is happening. She's doing a podcast. Absolutely. Yes. She's like, here are the reasons. Yeah, Jason. I'm telling her the reasons. That's always good. Get me to when the killer starts talking to somebody cruising head. Matt Bell and he's like, so you think that's a good enough reason to kill six people. Look at you. You don't know how to read. He's the reason we did this. No, he loves it. We did this for Texas. Matt's becoming a character. Yeah. Matt is. Matt and Ariana will make either way into this pod. That's. So your son dies. That gives you the excuse to kill. I'm not just trying to understand. Yeah. So one dad think was 20. It's okay. Uh, we get, uh, Alice finds Bill and the rest of the bodies. Tough one for Bill with the arrow through the eyeball. Yeah. And there's some good research on that. Yeah. Yeah. Uh, she has a really good barricade job, Alice. Yeah. Sometimes it is in these horror movies, sometimes they just put like the chair in front of the door. She's like fucking Minecraft, Mike, Mike Tomlin, just like building a whole village. Stop it. Get the body through the window anyway. Uh, and then two more scenes. Jason's mom shows up. They were making love while the young boy drowned. Um, chases are through the woods. Uh, the killer mommy killer killer mommy. Um, and then Betsy Palmer. She loses this UFC fight. I think it's like a 50 to 45 scorecard. Oh, yeah. It's tough. The Alice just kicks her ass. Do you think Alice over and over again was like waiting for her to come up on her in the canoe? Or do you think it was like a surprise to her when, when, when. It's tough. I mean, again, they don't know 46 years later. We're going to be breaking this down. I'm sure. But, um, I, I don't know why she thought. Uh, Jason's mom was just. I don't know. She thinks she thought she was dead or unconscious. Yeah. She's kind of wandered away. And then I'm going to sit with my back. Yeah. To the house. Just very strange choices. It's just a trope. And that's why, you know, later on they play with the trope. It's like. What you're supposed to do is incinerate the killer down to the very last Adam. To make sure that they are going. But a couple of curb stomps at least. Yeah. You want to see like teeth coming out of their mouth? You want them to be like, they're not just figured at least before I walk away. They can't leave their bloody mess the whole night. I mean, the worst ever was Jamie Lee Curtis, the Halloween one, she fucking drops the knife next time. Yeah. Yeah. But like, Alice, continuously to your point, like a UFC fight, she does enough to get out of the round. Yeah. Like, the round is going back and forth. Jason's mom keeps trying to get takedowns, trying to get him, can't get the kick you in. Yeah. It's a lot of chin and box kicking. Yeah. Yeah. And they also were the frying pan at one point. Yeah. Good slow motion to capitation, also a Friday 13th thing we're at the end. It's like the slow mo of the somebody. I've got his machete here. I come. And it's got that music. Oh. Oh. As she goes. And then the second ending, boat canoe canoe, like talking like canoe, just scary. One of the scariest things I've ever seen when I first saw it was Jason. We need Craig's reaction to the canoe ending legitimately shocking. Yeah. Totally thought the movie's only. Did you see it coming at all? No, because I saw there was like two minutes left in the runtime. And I was like, oh, this is just going to be like, she got away. And maybe there's a little tease. Actually floored me. I didn't really find the movie that scary until that specific scene. I can't imagine what it would have been like in the theater in 1980s. So it's directly like influenced by Kerry, right? This carries hand coming out at the end. And I think this is Tom Savini's idea. If I remember from the research, it's the makeup artist was like, we need like one more button on this, you know? But Jason was not envisioned as, okay, now we're going to put this kid in the mix. He's also disgusting looking. I can't believe it. They do a great job. One of the great things about Jason is that like we know him from the mask, but he is a disfigured dude, you know, it's like a real good jump scare. One of the best ones. And imitate it afterwards. Yes. They do. Let's get that. Oh, you thought the movie was over. I mean, in every, yeah, talk about nightmare, and I'm sure in every movie, hey, just let you know. Right? He's not fucking. The peace and tranquility of sitting on the lake. It's so calm. She's literally like as far away from anything as she can be. Mm-hmm. She's safe. Everything's happened. Yeah. And then boom. So I had horror movie tropes that this movie invented a female murderer. I don't think that had happened. Yeah. It had it? Well, I mean, Carrie is a female murderer. First of all, Carrie was in the right. They shouldn't have fucked with her like they did. They humiliated her on a prom night, but isn't she falling like the Freddy's own? Poor pigbloods on her. They were mean to her, but she used telekinetic powers to murder the entire party, including a bunch of people who were trying to help her. Yeah. They were mean. Just Betty Buckley's character. Sure. Right. Her mom abused her. Yeah. Everything interesting. The kids at school were so mean to her and she had telekinetic powers. I'm going to stop you. I'm going to let what you're saying wash over you and then you're going to be like, I shouldn't do that. Why don't we do Carrie? No, we're not done Carrie yet. We're going to. I'm not defending mass murder. I'm saying she had telekinetic powers. She had her control over it. They fucking drove her crazy. Yeah, it's tough. She saw red. That was it. My A-Bro. At the end. If I was litigating this, I would love to do this as a trial of Carrie. I would love for you to be the defense and not to be the prosecution. At the end of that, it looked like to me, Carrie looks door lock. Door lock. Like Carrie. It is crazy. It's like door lock. Door lock. Yeah. She knows what she's doing. You guys fucked up. Let's get busy. My defense would be. I mean, did you see the movie? They're fucking so mean to her. They were. They were asking for it. For me. I think there are other iconic like Pamela kind of reminds me of going even back to like Manchurian can, or like Mommy Dearest, but then depending, I mean, obviously like Psycho is Norman Beats, but Normal is, is pretty out there. So it invented that summer camp as a setting. I think it was the first one. And then the second ending that mayor may not be a nightmare and you don't really, you don't expect it. And then you don't really know if it was real or not. Right. So if it stole the one location one night slaughter that jaws music for the villain, you can't see kids dying right after every premarital sex, because they shouldn't have done that. A seemingly friendly helper who ends up being not friendly, the Texas chainsaw move. De not killing the killer, but just then repeatedly lead in the back when you could just get rid of them. And then the final girl, so still six things. Yeah. Not to mention like, this is on a certain day that everybody knows, et cetera, et cetera. Did it invent the nuts, the ranged member of the outside town community, who's actually right about how dangerous things are, like the, oh, don't listen to old praise, whatever, like he's like, yeah, did it invent you consider Donald Pleasant's that in Halloween sort of kind of by Halloween for. Yeah. Yeah. And then I guess you let about that, but he's like fighting it though. I'm talking about somebody that's like on the outside that you're going somewhere and it goes, what's weird is they said that guy has a wife who craze you out. I can't wait to take his wife. His wife. There's too major on answering questions. I have one is Ralph's home life and the guy in the beginning at the cemetery, Texas Texas chainsaw massacre. He kind of warns everybody of what's coming. Maybe so. Maybe so. I mean, I think in general, Texas chainsaw, it's like, there's grave robbing going on. Find another time to go to your dad's old place. So how do you have five degrees? Yeah, maybe skip this. What do you have from us? I'm Marcy and Jack fucking die because that's kind of like where you just know you're in Friday the 13th. I had that as well. That that's the scene that the entire movie to me is actually based around like that's the scene of the biting of the apple. Your dad. Very important. Also funny that it's Kevin Bacon. Yes. Mm hmm. You're a lazy content. I'll put your jacket. I think this is like his six three watchables. Is it even though he hasn't I don't think Ben and the star of any good men. JFK JFK. This is for animal house, animal house five. I think there was one more. Did you do foot loose? Not yet. I'd love to love that, you know, Bacon is, I think bacon is the top actor of all time at what bacon does. That's supposed to. Well, you're saying these like a robertory type. Do we say crazy stupid love wild things? No. Oh, yeah, I always spend in seven. So those are movies with bacon like coming in and adding to a movie, but I'm talking about the weird, incredibly watchable 80s Kevin Bacon movie early 90 where he's the lead like tremors or whatever. Trimmers, the big picture quick silver, yeah, like that level of leading man, like leading man. Flatline air sees one of the least. But all of that. Yeah. You couldn't see anybody bigger for those roles, but he's the perfect mid-level leading man in that role. I don't know if anybody is as good as him at delivering on movies. He's got a great. It's a great combination of like a little bit of smart, but a lot of like sincerity and a recognizable face. Very much so. Right. You know that you're in good hands. He's a, he's a cake like the big picture is actually one of my favorite movies. Will we ever do Mystic River? Is that my daughter? I can't. Come on, bro. I don't know. I don't know if it's rewatch. That, that one of the, that all the crying kids, I mean, we did that for like, we did do the KCF movie. Just about to say. Mystic River. I did that on the rewatchable. Yeah. It was sick. It was crazy. I can't get past it. Would you have for most rewatchable? Oh, yeah. I agree with you guys. Okay. Yeah. What's the most 1980 thing about this movie? The old gas station pumps really brought me back. Yeah. The gas station. They seem like they're from the 40s. This is here we talked about Betsy Palmer's sweater. But I think the winner is two characters and two different points to a Bogart and Perstation and a Catherine Hepburn. Yeah. Perstation. Yeah. Did you understand what was happening? I knew there were some old movie references, but no, not specifically. So what's the equivalent of that now? Well, in like obsession, if they did pulp fiction, imitations. Yeah. Like if one of them did jewels from pulp fiction, they had a 20 years later. If this is 1980. Yeah. I mean, it's jewels and forest. It's still a little late to be doing Bogart. A little late for it. Yeah. But I'll tell you what, back to my theory of cultural exploration, it had not culturally expired yet. Right. You still heard, like, Eddie Murphy and movie is going, ah, actually, it was, it's still it was around. Like, and it wasn't going yet. Other 1980 things. Uh, just the fact that it feels like the 70s, because like 1980 is still like, it's a seven years culture. Yeah. Yeah. I got a couple of things. Uh, number one, the hitchhiking. Okay. It's big 1980 thing. Yeah. You're trying to do that. Uh, number two, white kids at the lake. Yeah. In the 80s. There was a lot of shit, but white kids just going to the lake to hang out. Yeah. Movies was going to the lake. Yeah, I'll go to the lakes, too. I'll go to the lake. I see now. You go to the lake. I go to the lake. Go to the lake. I'm going to the lake. Never go to the lake. No. Not that it. Now that we know about it, there's a little floating part of the lake. I go just to see if Jason comes. Yeah. I go to the lake. I go to the lake. I go to the lake. I go to the lake. The lake. I go to the lake. I go to the lake. [BLANK_AUDIO] down on for the day. Really like a really nice bedtime ritual for folks, even at summer camp. Even like those kids that young. Yeah. What do you have for the Floyd Gundalli butter on my ass like pops my mouth or camp counselors in trouble, brother? I don't even need Jason, do you know what I'm saying? Like, if it was just like, if it was just this, I guess that's what meatballs is, but I'm just like, this is enough. Bad weather being a harbinger of many deaths. I think that actually, not only is Jason's mom, or athlete, she's also an amateur meteorologist. She probably went, I'm going to strike on this night 'cause we got about a 75% chance of rain that will cover my tracks and trap all of these kids in places. Think about it. Everybody's running around barefoot, they're slipping around. Nobody's at their best 'cause of the rain. I have random diner scenes where everyone knows everyone that's just like a giant, huge podcast. Yeah. It only happens in movies. I've never been in a diner or something. It's like, hey, hey, Marge, what's going on today? And it's like, I don't know, that's Bobby. And just every. It's even been a while since I had the experience of walking into a diner and everybody looks up from what they're eating to see who just came in. Just like, no, it happens in this movie. But it's now you're going to a diner. Everybody's looking at their phone. Yeah, everybody's in their phone and nobody's talking to anybody. Well, what do you guys go to diners? What diners? Yeah. That's why I like when there is-- I like all the lakes and diners. You guys have left America behind, but I'm still part of it. You know, there you go. Like diners. I mean, our L.A. version of the diner is the one Phil Rosenthal open that has influencers going in there. Like standing in line for two hours. Yeah, it's good. 28 dollar pancake. That hamburger is good. What's H the best? A truly tremendous set up for the sequels. They fucking lay in the groundwork. Where's the boy? Then he's still there. What's the boy there? Then he's still there, Bim. I'm ready. Every time you do a horror movie imitation, you do long legs hands. Sorry, Chris. I ain't-- I don't even need long legs. Kevin Bacon is age the best. For sure. What about when there's a town crazy? Is that ever going wrong? Is it gimmick in a movie? Crazy Ralph. Crazy Ralph. Because you have so much you could do with them. The town crazy could either be someone that throws you off the main narrative of the movie or somebody that you're supposed to listen to because of the main narrative of the movie. Society has forgotten him, but they're the only person that actually is giving a real warning. Do you think Ralph knew it was Pamela the whole time? Or do you think he's just thinks it's cursed? I think Pamela and I don't think anyone saw it come over there. Who's your favorite town crazy? Who's the most underrated? Right. I'm going with Sam Jackson above the rim. Sam Jackson is not in above the rim. No, Bernie Mac. Sorry. Bernie Mac in above the rim. Same Jackson was in above the rim too. No, he's not. I thought he was. No. Don't do it. Don't say what I think you're just saying. Bernie Mac. Where is Bernie Mac's character? Bernie Mac was flipped. Flip. Flip was on. Flip. Now watch. Watch Sam Jackson being that bitch. I'm saying get some of that. Remember he played. I'm going to talk about flip. He played on the same college high school basketball team with nutzo and the main guy. Is like he plays him in flip doesn't you know, by the way, nutzo, the guy talk Leon talks to nuts. Same thing. Another talks to a dead guy. Yeah. Not so. Not so. He said we even. What? He'll probably be out. Let's age the best strip monopoly. Maybe the only time this. I don't even know what the rules are. It doesn't make any sense. It's like paying. I just. Instead of rent. I take off my clothes. You're going to sit your bare ass. So the guy is definitely just going to tank. Right. It's not is a long game. Yeah. So at what point is that guy trying to figure out if he's going to have a threesome? What is the purpose of playing the game if that's not going to happen? He's going to sit there with a hard ass dick for two, for three or four hours playing the novel. I'd be like speed faster. Rolls. Rolls. Go. Everybody. You got. Are you tired? Are you tired? And he doesn't put up enough of a fight. They're like, oh, no more monopoly. I'd have been like, wait a minute. We were just getting started. And at some point, one of them was like, where's Jack? I was like, I don't fucking care where Jack is. Jack. Let's keep the strip monopoly going. I think you're rolling. You're a boardwalk. You just fucking hit boardwalk. Pay the fuck up. I think he definitely had threesome ideas. Yeah. Who's their idea? I had one more. But what did you have for what's it's best? I always love the moment when Jack and Marcy are down by the lake. And Jack just goes, wins shifted 180 degrees. That storm's going to tear right down the valley. And I'm like, this is what dudes were like before ESPN. Yeah. They just knew a lot about like weather. Right. How to fix stuff. Yeah. And then the ESPN can't lie. They're like, fuck a big or big field feeling in this way. Now, that's what you got to know about. You have to know that. Fucking change a call. I don't think there's enough balls for the six earths. There's not enough balls to go around. What do you have? This is what happens right after that. What's aged the best is how horny men are. And I'll tell you why they're sitting there talking right after he says that. And this is what she says. She goes, I've dreamed this dream. Maybe a half done times. There's a thunderstorm. The rain comes down like pebbles. I can hear the sound. I try to close my ears off. It doesn't work. The sound gets louder. The rain turns into blood. And the blood washes down in little rivers. He's like, that's crazy. And the sound stops. You like damn. That's crazy. You want to go inside? Hey, let's go inside. Not one thing. In one way that he go. Wait. What the fuck is this shit talking about? The blood. Hey, man, what the blood mean? Am I in the drain? Before we go here real quick, I want to make, I don't get killed in this dream with an arrow through the neck. No, he's like, how about those fillings? Yeah, exactly. He's like, actually, you know, it's just having a wind just shifted again. So let's try to get inside. Let's not never mention how there's a cemetery right there or that it's called Camp Blood or any of that stuff. Do you think they even know? Camp Blood's the nickname. It was called Camp Crystal Lake. I know. But do you think they know about the Camp Blood thing, like for real? Don't they mention it in the beginning of the movie? In two. They know. Well, Ralph is like, she's like, I'm going to Crystal Lake, and they're like, he's mentioning it. When they all are meeting for the first time, don't they say? I feel like the cemetery would be as scary as the Camp Blood piece. I know. It's fucking, there were no lights anywhere. The only other one I had was the score. Yeah. It was actually, yeah. It was done by Harry Manfredini, and so for 46 years, I thought it was Choo-choo, ha-ha-ha. But it's not. It's Kiki. It's Kiki, ma-ma-ma-ma. Kiki, ma-ma-ma-ma. Oh. So I just heard this incorrectly for my entire life. I thought it was Choo-choo. This is life before subtitling. Yeah. Yeah. The movie leans on it, too. Yeah. It uses it a lot. Choo-choo. I mean, arguably the best, other than like some of the Halloween with the piano. Halloween wins the gold for like, it's got, yeah, it's Halloween as moves. This just has the, but that, but that, both of them are like, yeah, it's probably gold silver with that. But both of them, you just know that you're in the shit now when that starts to, if you're in your house alone and you just heard that in the house, I get my car. Just shitting on your stuff. Yeah. Would you have for a great check, order? Mom's heading to the slow mo machete down just because that's become, that's a hallmark of these movies and winds up becoming like the, you got to have it, Steve. Can we bring in Bangkok Craig for this? Sure. Oh, Bangkok Craig. Yeah. Do you buy that you could cut somebody's head off with, uh, with that size knife? I doubt it was very sharp, right? It's probably like a dull old knife. So no way. The velocity you would need to get through the neck out. Which is also what I told you to is, uh, Jenny or whatever name is in two tries to do it to Jason. And only like damages. You need like a samurai level katana. That's how I feel. Also, you need to be like. Shocking rain. Like that. It probably goes down. Well, in there, probably like a ton of technique that will go along with that as well. Like, fuck house. I mean, it has to be sharp. But don't you have to know how to like, yeah, how's the dragon? She misses. Yeah. I feel like you got to do a beheading star with her down on their hands and knees. And you could have that like downward force chopping up across somebody like that. I don't see it. I don't see it either. And that is just with it. Yeah. I don't think she's strong enough. The shot is iconic. Yeah. Great shot. Chess Rockwell Brocklander's the word best character name. Give you crazy Ralph. I could give you Jason Voorhees. Jason Voorhees was mine. I had crazy Ralph. Voorhees is a great, uh-oh name. Mm-hmm. Voorhees. Yeah. Do we have any pro? Like Finn, have you met my wife? Any pro athlete. Lisa Voorhees. What the fuck? What kind of name is that? What's the question? Any pro athlete Voorhees is right now. If your name's Voorhees, you're changing me. It's so sick if you were a hockey player with the last name for you. Yeah. Andrew Voorhees. He's on the Ravens. Yeah. Lieman. The van lathe in a word. Did this movie need more black people? No. I'll get to my flex later on. You want to save that one for later? Yeah. We can save it later on for the flex. All right. CR as a flex. What do you got? I'm going to get to the end of word for Alice. Because that would have been the sickest ending ever. If Jake goes on the lake, holds her under. It's just nobody left. Yeah. But obviously the problem then is like the cops are there. So they see it and then it's like, okay, so like we now know Jason's here and we, because the whole point is that Jason is this myth that nobody believes. And but that would have been so help me help me out. So what is so does that happen in the cops don't see it? No, it doesn't happen. It doesn't have what he's out there. And that's just in her imagination. - Yes. - It doesn't happen. No, it can't happen because he's he's dead with the mom. Well, actually the mom feels like he's dead But he's not dead. He couldn't have been dead her whole Empathy is for doing all of this is that he got even though the second one comes out in 81 It's set in 84 and the future movies isn't Jason alive or no yes But like is killed multiple times and then it becomes a supernatural specter. Yeah It's just the kill as the same double ending at the end with Michael Kane's character comes back and Nancy Alan's character Realizes it was a dream and she's in the hospital. We should talk about this. So at one point Michael Myers becomes supernatural as well, right? Or no, he's just like I think it's five five four and then the cult gets involved Yeah, super natural both of these which do you guys prefer? Do you prefer before or after they become demons? I like when it's when it's like chainsaw where I Could really buy into this person's just the guy who believes in property lines. Yeah, right Because he wants he wants to invite you into his house. Yeah. Yeah Nobody ever wakes up from a dream and they're like oh man. I just dream Roman Anthony's hand was healthy So it's Jason pulled me in a lake I haven't had a good dream since I turned like 21 Yeah, do you have dreams? I dream insane, but you've good dreams ever sometimes. Uh-huh I'm not gonna bump you guys out, but like I don't know. What what like after my dad died He was always he would always come to me. Oh, that's great. Oh, interesting. That's wonderful. Like yeah stuff like that. Yeah really? Like all my dad was a Bouncer at a club once my dad was riding horses with me. I was lost at Duke University And I wandered into a soul food restaurant But I didn't know if I could eat the soul food We knew as a dream because it was you're a duke And my dad my dad is like no, you can eat from here. And I sit down and have a meal with him. It just happened a bunch of different ways I wish I wish I had better dreams I don't really remember them. I just can't or stress an anxiety a lot of them. I have a lot of those dreams too. Yeah I've got three pods Three pods that they're all at the same time. What am I gonna do? I think I have had no right supposed to be our house And we're doing a different movie than the one I've prepared for. Oh I think like you sit down and it's like okay, Tom for another 48 hours. You're like this is not Beverly Hills Um, was there a better title for this movie? It was originally called a long night at Camp Blood for the screenplay. That's not bad Camp how about Camp Blood Camp Blood's great. Camp Blood's good too I was gonna do this as a hottest take, but I have a better one I think he should have called this camp blood and I think he should have kept Friday 13th as a different gimmick for interesting The different franchise, but he's out he's out of the picture after the first one Right camp blood to camp blood three. That's I think that could have been the same at the same time though The movies have more versatility moving on with the sequels like camp blood Camp blood takes Manhattan is not as good right right? No, he's saying there should be a camp blood series. Oh, and then there is a Jason's here. I see I see the coming since Butch's girlfriend award week link of the film I have what do you have? All right. This I got mad man Ned Ned's good. He's in my what's there's the worst Steve Christy is a piece of shit. Ah Steve Christy Steve who runs the camp He does he kind of like just get show off. He's immediately like look help me get this tree stump out of here Then he's like I'm out done. Don't forget about he hits on the help. It's on Alice. Yeah, shirtless shirtless It is he's like you do great drawings and touches her head for some reason. He's super creepy But that is like I'm gonna bounce you know we got loaded in the in town Yeah, he's at the diner and then he goes to the diner to like so we're up a little bit drive home I don't say I think he might have been thinking about taking a run at the old waitress Something was happening. She but she came on to him though. She's trying to see what was up She might have might have given him a little dessert. Yeah, but at one time in life. What was your weaklings of his Ned Ned gets on my fucking nose. We can talk about ways the worst to Ned like Ned was getting them on that Ned's tough. That's a tough hang Which one was that the guy wears the Native American headdress. Oh Yeah, he used the cultural appropriate throughout the movie. He was gonna be my flex for I was gonna create a category called the Ned number 88 award for the guy I can't wait to die. Yeah, I just thought of Yeah, that's not enough. Yeah. No, I like that. I like what you think that that scene can't get any worse when he's wearing the headdress and then the cops like settle down Tonto That's so fucking we coach ease. It's so weird that cop is so it's completely different I thought that was coming back Also every time a cop shows up in the first three movies They immediately get called away for some car accident somewhere else. Yeah, so they're like, oh god, I've got a job. It's like But like Ned thinks he's chubby chasing this movie. Yeah, what the fuck's going on is so and all so much of nothing in his Franklin from Texas chase on the worst part. He's for most of the movie, right? Yeah, like out of all the 13th the worst one is the guy from last American version in part four The guy who's watching the old Movies are there no the guy who's watching the old movies on the movie projector. Yeah Trying to get everybody to watch the movies with them that guy sucks. Mm-hmm talk about bad hang. Can't wait to give it to him. We'll do that My weak link. I think the first girl who died Annie Should have actually been the hero of the movie and I would have killed off Alice first I thought Alice was a rough hang I didn't like her hair um, I I I just thought out all the girls easily not the most attractive one such an interesting two because the actress who plays Alice Adrian King Wines of getting like a stalker after this. Yeah, I had this so it's kind of like I don't want to do two And she's like just right get me out of two as fast as possible. But arguably there is a part in this series that she could have Been the Laurie Strode of Friday the 13th. They had Annie who's basically Caron out on 2.0 And they just get rid of her in the first 10 minutes of the movie. I don't know what they were thinking. I mean You look at it right now and you know every time I see the movie the movie comes on. I watch it once every two years We'll be on something like that hair tees perfectly gigantic eyes. That's like that's you know She gets it. I'm with it Okay, what's it's the worst knowing the reveal This is a TV if you're like I know this is Pam. Yeah, I know where this is going Steve hitting in the staff we mentioned Faking a drowning so a cute co-worker can give you mouth to mouth I'm so very 70s 80s. I don't know if that's fine in 26 settle down Tonto and then They had so little money that they didn't have enough light and that's why this movie is so dark. Yeah, that's why I probably also like they uh I always feel like if they could Reduce some of the kills in this movie with a little bit more money It would have popped more now you Added some Friday the 13th kills and yeah the big one. It's in my what stage the worst is the Brenda kill When she's like wandered out. She's my favorite. We didn't even see it and when she wanders out into the archery range Yeah, you're like oh my god. They're gonna shoot arrows at Brenda And it and it's just the lights are on and then it's like oh, I I think Brenda's out there and then she's dead Every time I watch this movie, I think something got edited, but maybe they just didn't have the money to do the brandica I think they were having a lot of problems too because the one Marcy gets hit with the ax But I think they were having a lot of problems with like we can either show the after math of a kill But we can't show both the kill and the aftermath It was just too much money and the special effects which you are would you have for what's age of the worst? Yeah, um So obviously net the killing of the snake now you we'd find a like a way to like it's like a six-minute scene I know Like let's wrap this up And they get the fucking thing, but while we catch the snake and let the snake go by the way That's also in what stage the worst because they actually killed the snake did they for the movie for the movie Oh, that's that's that's age put live snake Adrian King said in the book crystal lake memories That the owner of the snake was standing off on the side tears running down his cheeks No shit. That's fucking terrible. They didn't have pita. They didn't tell the snake owner that they were gonna do that. No. Oh my god Um the bow guard impression. I had Age pretty badly, but something else that like this movie is a horror movie. They don't have no big ass titties Now this is still the 70s basic, you know that it's a nipple movie. It's a nipple movie But later on in the decade yeah Every horror movie was I was just watching as a kid they would give you some just big ass Yeah, yeah, I'm like because the 80s become a era Of the big ass titties 70s Stallone Schwarzenegger cold war big boobs. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So later on you get deeper into these movies When you get the the gratuitous newly big ass titties. It would be funny if Sarah's like, you know, I'm more of a nipples guy Now this movie is a different people take turns with the nipples in the school. Yeah, it's a little nip It works don't give me wrong, but let in later words are on. Right. Kevin making though kind of got his hands all over the place in this movie She did you don't see that often. Yeah, I don't think there was an anti-missi-quart near that was very long shot of his hands on her boots. Yeah. You mentioned the stalker thing. She basically stopped acting. Yeah. She was out. And it was before they was a fears before the my sister Sam case where they changed all the celebrity stocking rules and added rules. But this girl, Adrian King was living in fear for like a year and a half. The guy was like showing up at her apartment and putting Polaroids on her. Also, you know, it's somebody who's from Friday the 13th, that guy's like, yeah, really great. Yeah. All right. We're going to take a break, come back with how to stick. The ruffalo Hannah Rubeneck, Partridge over acting word. But I could also give you the John Rambo under acting award. Which way do you want to go? Why? I think it's John Rambo's. You're you have an idea. I have Adrian King as the under acting award. She's just not freaked out enough. First of all, you find all the people you're in the camp with are all dead. I don't think she's nearly horrified and I animated it. And then this lady comes who clearly is the killer and even she just like is problem solving in a way that I don't think is realistic. I think low energy, Marcy and Brenda and Annie were more interesting final girls. And yes, I do think that Adrian King seems to be. Yeah. If you were like, not sure. Tell me three things about Alice. It's tough. The one thing I do remember, talk about it later, but it's like, you know, the moral is like off the charts. Like, no, no, no, for Alice, oh, my friends are dead. Who are you talking to? Like, yes, she's talking to Jason's mom. It's like, no, no, no, it's okay. No, no, no, no, it's not okay. It's not okay. I have discovered the bodies. There is no, I have not think my friends are dead. Is there work going to get help or get the fuck out of my face with your cable and it's sweater? They're going. They're dead. How about she gets in the car, but then get scared because the dead girls and the drivers in the pastor's seat. I'm still driving away. Yeah. I'll just push that body out. I'm getting the fuck out. Or you'll drive. She's like, I can't use this car. There's a dead body. It's like, you're going to be the next dead body, dumbass. Yeah. I'll tell you. The CR thinks Luke Wilson could have been Harrison Ford, how to take a word. What do you have, Van? So they call weed grass in this movie and something occurred to me. Society was like in a much better state when they called weed grass. Like when weed was called grass and it was cheaper and was cheaper, let's pull her body. Yeah, to know a guy. Yeah. Reefer. Not good. Crazy. Grass. Harmless. Grass. Harmless. It's hot as much, right? Hot. Dirty. But think about it. The group of whites you want to be around is the ones that's going to pull something out like, hey, man, you smoke a little grass. Right. This is mostly oregano. But yes, yeah, whatever. It's like, but like, they just seem cool. It's oregano twigs and vague. You know who they smoked grass in. Big chill. They smoked grass in a big chill decent group of white people days, days confused. That is the number one movie of grass that you would smoke with white people and it seems like it's a cool time. What they got like one brother in that? I'm going to talk more about this later. It seemed like he was in decent hands. They smoking grass. What do you have? If we're just talking about improvement over the original and expansion of like the mythology and a greater idea, the leap from Friday one to Friday to makes Friday to the greatest sequel of all time. Ever. Oh, over aliens too and Godfather too, aliens, Godfather to an empire strike back, do not double up their original movies in terms of like quality. Friday to is like leaps and bounds. The kids are way more charming. The final girl is great. Awesome. Yeah. I like her. I should have thought it. The kills are incredible. Jason is terrifying. The whole fucking thing with Jason's mom. Mom's head there. It's so much better than one to me that I think it in that term of like improvement over original is the best sequel ever made. So you're saying the war of 13th one versus two. The war is just advance matrix for so much better. Because most movies that we talk about as being phenomenal sequels, they have so much phenomenal source material. They're just like. Super derivative. It might be a little bit better than a new hope or a little bit better than Godfather one. That was pretty good. This is the hottest take. So I'm going to go hot. You know, moms get a lot of, a lot of love. We'll talk about the moms, the ones that thank 90% of the time. Sometimes you need dads too. This movie needed a dad. Jason's mom at some point, if a dad is in there, because I think Jason's dad probably took off. Yeah, that's right. Yeah. This is where it's like, yo, we're going to leave New Jersey. Like this whole thing, I love my son too. This was terrible. We got to get the fuck out of here. Every time they try to reopen this camp, you lose your mind. We're going to move to Arizona. Let's get out. This is driving you crazy. This is how I could have stopped. So this is interesting. So I love this take. I knew it. I did it just for you. I love it. I love this take. But I'm saying there's also something that you're missing. Yeah. There's a version of that where dad is the first victim. I tried to talk to my husband about how much he's better. She said that. No, no, no, no, no, no, no. I'm just saying there's a version of this where she goes, no one would listen. Not even his father. And then he says, that's good. That's good. Betsy Palmer said that she basically built a backstory in her head for, yeah. That is what you said. Jason Sr. wanted us to move away. She was a single mother. And I had to change his mind. Yeah. I was going to correct him right. Cassie Winifes. You said the Sally Field thing already. They realized they couldn't afford her. She also would have been 32 at the time, which is a big deal, but the style Parsons. I don't know how that is. Shelly Winters turned it down. Palmer agreed because she needed a new car and was paid $1,000 a day for 10 days. I thought it was a piece of shit, had no idea it was going to be a major movie. And then Sean Cunningham, the director/producer, was going to have his son play young Jason to get his son in the movie and the wife feed her to it. Yeah. I'm going to keep the movies in the back. Zero killer. Would you have for flex, man? So my flex is the top five lists of movies that didn't need black people. No black people in this movie. I'm happy that they weren't any. I say, is it a zero? What? We had zero black people in this movie. I think it's zero black people. It's zero black people. See, this should be a website. There's even, there's a black guy in Texas, right? He goes running down the other side of the road. If this was a website, would you go to it and check it out like IMDB? Of course. And when I say no black people, I mean, I'm not talking about like, you know, somebody shows up as a whole horse in one scene in the movie. I'm sorry. Even like in the diner, just eating with their lines. Black stat news. Yeah. Black stat news. Black stat news is being credible. It's awesome, right? Well, also be like zero, zero black people versus 79 total characters. Yeah. What's the ratio? What's the ratio? What was the making the most of out of their lines? This would have a lot because there's like 70 people in this movie. Oh, there were 70 people in what movie? In front of 13? Oh, yeah. Yeah. Okay. So these are the movies. Number five, Friday at 13th. You all in the woods with white people. Everybody getting killed. I'm glad my people didn't have to go through that. All right. Number four, the big chill. Glad. Really? There's no way that you could be in that friend group of people from the big chill and not be a token. There's just no way. Okay. Like they all sing in most Motown. Do you want to have tees in the song? They would have been like great fan. Yeah. Yeah. Sixies were tough. We wanted to defend the black panthers. That's how we met Huey here. No, no. I can't. You can't fucking do it. You can't do that. Number three, Greece. News flash. That movie is about fucking gang violence. Okay. Yeah. If you put black people in that, that movie is going to the front page of Fox News. A musical comedy about gang violence. Yeah. That's not happening. No, no black people in Greece. It doesn't feel like it. I haven't watched it in a while, but I think I would have remembered that. Black stat news is still tabulated. Still, yeah. Yeah. Number two. Goodwill hunting. Obvious. That's right. All right. It's obvious. They're like, you know, okay. Takes place in Boston, genius, janitor, hard goal. I don't know if there are any black people in Goodwill hunting. That's how you do five black Boston movies for all these. I could have done the town. I don't know if there's any black, but I actually heard the fact. Yeah. No, no, no, the part of anti-managing. Oh, that's right. Yeah. Yeah. Number one is easy. Jackass. My brother. What are you doing, stapling your penis to your thigh for these white boys? We don't need that. Right. We don't need any of the stunts that you got to do. What I'm doing right here is enough. Okay. So Steve is black. You would have been a hell. We're not going. We're not accepting that. We're not accepting none of the stunts. None of the shit that's going on. That's going down with that. Don't need any. We can enjoy all of these movies. These are some of my favorite movies. Love the big chill. Yeah. Love Goodwill hunting. As much as I don't want to. Like love Jackass hilarious. I don't need to see it all the time up there. I don't need to see us. Representation doesn't matter. It matters. But not in Jackass. Yeah. We don't need that there. That was a really good list. Thank you very much. Anderson, save the department. from a, from a way out. Yeah. By the way, they make the joke in the movie. Yes. You're a black guy in Boston. You already totally fucked. And then at the end of the movie, doesn't he get dumb? He gets dumb. Yeah. And he comes in at the end. Boy, I tell you what. Like, am I going to know clear out needed? I sit in the theater watching all of that. My soul left my body. That last scene of the party. He's just fucking. I just watched it with Ben Simmons a month ago. How do you see him? No, ending Leo getting shot is still one of the all-time. I can't believe that happens. Jane Batch deal. Nicholson gets worse with every viewing. When I say to leave the body in the mosh, you leave the body in the mosh. Accidentally. Just, I don't know what accent he has in that. He's dialing it up though. I kind of like the performance. He's awesome in that. Yeah. Hans Gruber scale villain ranking for Jason's bomb. Like a three and a half. Yeah. I feel like. She's only really wilding out for like the last 10 minutes of the movie. And I think that. Her frail frame kind of pushes the limits of like what she could really do to all these teenagers. Yeah. It's a little deniro Irishman energy. That's my biggest nitpick. We'll get to that. Do you think you could throw a body throw a window right now? Depending on the size of the body. Yeah. That cut crack could do it. That girl is probably like 130 pounds. I think it's a big difference between like could I do it versus like if someone was fighting me. Could I do it? Yeah. It's a window like that where there's you have to get the body up and over. Yeah. The thing is that I did wait as like notoriously, especially for like a 70 year old woman. Right. Yeah. She's been in the game. No offense, but she's probably like not doing a lot of stuff. She's been the de an waiters award free. Yeah, absolutely. That's an easy one. Yeah. Her Ralph. Young Jason. I mean, it's a great second. Yeah. And thought about it. I think Jason's moments. Recasting couch director city. Obviously Tom Hanks is Ned. He's supposed to buddy like being funny Tom Hanks. Yeah. Movies a hundred times better. Young Sharon Stone is Alice. Ooh. Her first movie. They're doing all like unknowns. Like a Sharon Stone in there. Not bad. I'm into it. Kathleen Turner. Probably a little bit beneath her. Two Sultry. Yeah. She's trying to seduce the mom. Also, I think if Kathleen Turner in 1980 showed up at your summer camp, there would be like. Yeah. Like guys would be committing sepaku in front of her. They were just like, I don't know what to say. Well, I have never seen any of these beautiful. Was that the least surprising revelation of all time? Michael Douglas' autobiography that him and Kathleen Turner had in affair. Yeah. Of course. Like didn't we all know that? Right. But we think they didn't fuck on the set in in chemistry movies. That movie has sort of been lost to time. And so far as like what a big deal it was when it came out. Yeah. I love that. A big fucking deal. Right. Yeah. But when you go back and watch that. Their chemistry is on some Han Solo Princess Laya type shit. Like I don't think anyone ever had better chemistry with more great looking actress than him. He's like seven eight different movies where it seems like are they fucking during this movie? What's going on here? Craig you have a flex. Mallory Ruben Award for did this movie need a better sex scene. I think they really misplayed the sex in this movie. I feel like if angry killer Christian mom is upset that the camp councils are having sex. That the climax of this movie should be a climax. Yeah. You know what I mean? Like it should have built up to a sex scene between Kevin Bacon and the girl or whatever. And she infiltrates that. It was weird that like she was like, you know, the boy drowned while they were having sex. And then the sex scene is like a part of the movie. But it's like the second death. I thought it should have all built up. It's also that she doesn't kill people who aren't having sex. Yes. So it's like it doesn't she has no compunction about doing that. So why make that the central preoccupation? Yeah. You got to make that the final moment of the movie. It should have been a big sex scene. Kill scene. Strip monopoly. More should have happened. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I agree. Kevin Scott shitting on himself for most unbelievable anecdote from the actual film shoot. Lou Reed had a house next to the camp. And they went to his farm and he played music for them. He played a free show for the cast. And hung out like and just chilled with them. Lou Reed. And he's still pretty famous at that point. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. For sure. And he didn't know who they were. They were just shooting them. It was just like a bunch of people shooting a movie next door. Oh, wow. It's awesome. Half that center of research, the screenwriter Miller. He thought he thought it would be fun to turn motherhood on its head with a female killer. Very upset that Jason was turned into the killer in the later movies. Yes. Said Jason was dead from the very beginning. He was a victim, not a villain. Settle down, Victor Miller. Yeah. Yeah. You're just writing a Halloween rip off over here. You didn't just write boogie nights. Fred 13th shot in Warren County, New Jersey. Camp scene shot at a working boy scout camp called camp no bees. No bee boats go. There you go. They were rehearsing. Palmer slapped King in the face during the rehearsal. Yeah. And the lady played Alice started crying and was upset that she got hit. I'm gonna get that and teach Betsy Palmer how to fake hitting somebody actor Harry Crosby. I got fake blood in his eye from having the arrow in his eye and briefly lost his sight. Being Crosby's kid. Yeah. It is. So weird. I saw that in the research. Briefly lost his sight. And Kevin Bacon apparently claims that he gets asked to sign screenshots from his death scene in this movie more than all his other movies. I have a half ass internet research that I found out as we were doing this podcast. Robbie Morgan, who played the girl at the beginning. And she's married to Mark Wahlberg. The Mark Wahlberg that is the host of temptation. Oh my god. Another Mark Wahlberg. Wow. Yeah. She's married. She's been married to Mark Lewis Wahlberg. Mark L. Wahlberg. Mark L. Wahlberg. Temptation Island dude and Teeke's road show guy. All of these different. Since 1987 they've been married. It's bought early on him. Temptation Island still cranking it out. I haven't heard about it in a while. It is. It seems like love Island marking corrected it. Temptation Island still exists. Okay. Matter of matter. Same cup ups. Okay. Then could you have hosted one of those shows? I would love to. I would love to. I'm not going to be going and be like Chris. It seems like you and Phoebe are having some issues. Yeah. Yeah. The rest of the. Hey. The rest of the cast of new bombshells into the villa. Let's see how this twerk contest ends up. That's what this shit is about. You ever watch this shit? I see that they shaken ass and trying to like enticing. I watch it one time. I'm like, what is this y'all be looking at man? This is like. I had some Boston friends who were upset about the. Love is blind. Being in Boston. But not actually using real Boston people. So like a couple of people that are actual Boston people. I think gotten to the to the like out in Boston's episodes yet. Or is it still in the next season? Well, they can't do. Love is blind in Boston. They're doing it in Boston. But I think there's a. Well, they can't use Boston people because they end up with an interracial. Then you have. You have. Right. Right. I can't. What was I thinking? I should know. Love is blind. I should know at this point. What's going to happen? This thing is blind in Boston. Damn it. Right. They can't. They can't do it. I'm Adrian King definitely. 1980 drowning movies. Is there another one? Ordinary people. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Big drowning year. Big drowning year. Jason. No. Kevin Bacon. No. Summer campsite movies. I think probably me boss. Yeah. Halloween ripoff movies. This definitely. The Blair's town diner. Seems great. Sure. When I get some hash there. Strip monopoly. Strip monopoly for sure. I've never seen it again. I'm there. I don't think this is too long. You can't play strip monopoly. Stuff. It takes like four fucking hours. Play monopoly. I'm the fucking best of monopoly then. I would love to play. Rip your ass. I don't know. We can play in the new sicklemore. We can't play bro. I'm going to be real with you. I think if you ask around my friend group. And you in Gina Ryan Ryan trade. All we had a monopoly phase. And it like threatened the friendships. I was going. Does get very personal. I'm going crazy. I'm going crazy. I'm going crazy. All of my policies go out the window. When I'm playing a monopoly. Oh, interesting. Classic. Exactly. Right away. Cruiser hanks. Oh, hold on. Apex mountain. Can't. One more dumpster. Yeah. Are these the dumbest kids that's ever lived in a horror movie? Are these the dumbest ones? I mean, I can make arguments for everyone else. Halloween. You going out is Halloween. I have to do some. I think the Halloween kids are dumb. I don't think they're dummies. They didn't see a comment. Because I think sleep way camp. And like, there's a couple like really. These kids are morons, bro. Like, they are super. They're not scared enough from day one. Yeah. Like, ridiculous. Hey, I'm going to go check it out. Hey, I want to come with. What the fuck you checking it out for? Yeah. Like, wait. That's so weird. The generator went out. Yeah. Although lights are on at the archery range. What the fuck? Like, is anybody going to go get help? Where did Jack and Brenda go? Yeah. These. These motherfuckers are truly, truly embassies. Cruiser hanks. Hanks. Hanks. Pickin' nits. So this movie makes it seem like more shit was going down at this campsite. Two murders. Fires being set. - Mom's never a suspect here? - This is my big thing, is where is Pam in the intervening dead years while the camp is dormant? And then nobody in town is like, isn't it weird that like Pam always twigs out when they try to open the camp and then there's like a string of deaths that are pretty gruesome? And then Pam just goes back to work at like the CVS, okay? - How many kids have to get killed at the camp? - For them to go, no more kids. - But how many kids did get killed? Do we actually know? 'Cause it seemed like there were fires and then everybody stayed away. - 259 when she gets in the first time. - Yeah. - And then they try to burn it down, right? - Yeah. - And then she comes back in 80 when they try to reopen it. And then, so, but I understand maybe that's not the same sheriff or whatever, but it's like, there is a consistent figure in the background. - So we're at the Blair's town diner with Crazy Ralph, someone table. - Oh, you know they're dragging Pam. - Pam's eating eggs. Somebody's like, I heard somebody might be open in the new camp. - She's like, she's like slamming her plate down. - You fucking kidding me? - I mean, Crazy Ralph probably not as crazy as she, why wasn't she Crazy Pam? - Yeah. - The biggest picking hit is this mom of where he's athletic enough to pull off anything in this movie 'cause she's a terrible fighter. - Right. - I mean, I have it written, I mean, he's like, I, she own peptides? - I mean, she's going crazy. - But she does get, this is the problem is that the fight between Alice and Pam is so bad that you're like, how did Alice pull off any of what she did? - It's definitely one of those fights where in the research there was not a fight choreographer. - No. - They were like, just do this and then you do this. - It's like kicking at each other and then like she shoves Pam once and she like topples over a little three times. - My last one, Jason wasn't a good swimmer. So Pam tells us, so why the fuck was he swimming at night in the goddamn open lake? - This summer camp. - Yeah. - Why is he out there? Is he doing? - 'Cause you know what the real deal is, right? It's her fucking fault. - Yeah, teach the kid how to swim. - Yeah, it's her fucking fault. - You're at a campsite with a lake, your kid does know how to swim, control your team. - Tell the counselors. - Yeah, control like Jesus. - She's a fucking fool. - Any other Netflix? - No. - Man. - Wait, do I have any? - Yeah. - Sequel, prequel, streamer, all black cast. - It's been off Remake, untouched, but they've done all this. - They've literally done all of it except for all black cast. - And there's a prequel coming with little carolini. - Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. What's that one about? - I think it's about the interviewee years. - It's about Pam. - Jason's death through up to one. - But no Jason worries? - I think Jason, little kid Jason might be in the beginning of it. - That's homework. - Pam, maybe we'll find out about Pam's marriage. - Yeah. - Is this movie better with Wayne Jenkins, Berge the Flores, Zayn Lowe, Robert Evans? - That's gonna be funny. - Dr. Chuck Nichols, Ted Levine. - What do you have, CR? - Dr. Chuck, being like, "Ladies and gentlemen, my friend Pamela, doesn't feel well, obviously. Go back to your dessert, your coffee. - I have one. I gotta get serious for one second. - This is Stephen A. - I gotta say something about my friend, Jason Voorhees. This brother will not stop killing people. This is clearly a sickness. The man needs help. Stephen A. and Jason Voorhees. - Do Stephen A, okay, so. - Where's Stephen A. Clipper? He's been speaking very silently. - Oh, he does it all the time. - Is he doing that all the time? - Yeah, he does. He lowers the voice to be getting really sensitive. - I gotta do one for you. - So Stephen A and Jason Voorhees are in a media beef. And Stephen A is threatening Jason Voorhees. - You don't want me to bring out the receipts, Jason Voorhees. - You want me to tell what I know from what's going on up at Camp Crystal Lake. - You really wanna talk about that, Jason Voorhees? - Do we wanna talk about bodies? - You wanna talk about bodies? 'Cause I know where they're buried. - I talked to Crazy Ralph. - That is like going back. - You really want me to do that, Jason. - You want to talk about family, Jason? - Then Voorhees goes on McAfee. So he's like in the back of a toilet roll. - Voorhees does the car wash. She's like get up. He's that big day with Peter Schringer. Stephen Dominic Foxworth. - Just one Oscar who gets it, probably the score. - I give it to Tom Savini, the makeup guy. 'Cause he's gone out, dad, he worked with Romero. He's a legendary makeup and special effects guy. And then he's in from Dustel Dawn. Kind of a character actor. - Probably an answerable question. I only, my only one is if you're to assume that wasn't a dream at the end. And Jason's alive. But Kid Jason jumps out of the lake. But it's 22 years after Kid Jason died. Would Kid Jason become an adult? What's the, so Kid Jason gets killed. - Kid Jason comes out of the lake at the end. - And looks like a kid. - Right, that's a kid. - It looks like a kid. - Like actually the guy who played him in the movie, he like calls when he's in a band called First Jason. - And the director was gonna cast his son as young Jason. So clearly they want the kid to be a teenager. But it's 22 years after he drowned. - So you think the water is like keeping him in professional terms? - I just asked some questions. - So it feeds toward this was a dream, which means everything that happens from part two on is supernatural. - Our only name is the guy's name, I want to shout him out. - Yeah, yeah. - For Jason, okay, go ahead, man. But in part two, he's a grown adult. - Yeah, he's yoked up. - So it's possible she dreams. - He's doing, it's booking season for Jason. - Yeah. - He's fucking jacked. - Creating. - It's possible she dreamed that little kid pulled her into the lake. But it was actually adult Jason. - Oh, so in her head, it's a kid that it's actually an adult. - Yeah, I think this is where the evil part of Friday lights, like in the same way that it happens in Halloween, like, there's-- - Friday lights. - Sorry, Friday the 13th. - I remember that season. - Was that what Andrew killed the guy? - Yeah. - Well, this leads to the other part. So kid Jason in part two is 35 years old 'cause it's 23 years later after he drowned as a teenager. One of the great late bloomer athletes we've had. Right? Sometimes this will happen in boxing where the guy will come in. He's like 27. He's a young 27. That usually means he was jail for like six years. - But do you think it's an actor who's like finding the right coordinator? - Jason? - Yeah, like Donald. Hard to, like, it's a little Kurt Warner-ish. Jason was playing the, Jason was playing Arena football for years, waiting for his moment. - Remember Billy would want most from this movie? The welcome to camp Crystal Lake Science, pretty nice. - Yeah, he's awesome. - Nice big fat one. - The monopoly board. Strip monopoly. You know what I want? I want the machete. Because the machete is franchise-- - Decapitation machete. - Yeah, yeah. - It's like the machete is going to go on to becoming iconic. Having that machete would be-- - Coach Finstack, Mr. Miyagi, we're a best worth lifeless. And maybe we don't reopen Camp Blood. - Yes. - Anything called Camp Blood, maybe not? - Yeah, also just like-- - Eight times past? How about not enough times past? - Read the Yelp reviews before you accept a job being a cook at a camp. - Yeah, listen to the people in a diner that tell you about the horrible history of a place where children get killed routinely. - Double feature choice too? - Yes. For sure. I went Nightmare on Elm Street too, which is an underrated Nightmare on Elm Street. - Remember that one? - Yeah. - It's kind of like the one, the homo-erotic one. - Two is a good, it's a really good, I mean, that would be a longer evening, but it's a really nice book end for this one. Like you just get the full Pamela to Jason transition. - One of the tougher who won the movies we've ever had. - Almost impossible. - I'm gonna throw out Steve Miner, the director of Two and Three, who is an associate producer on One. - And felon to two kids-- - And why is it not only like the guy sort of shepherds this into becoming a big franchise, but also then parlays that into being a pretty for what their Hollywood director. - Hmm. - Really couldn't. - I think it's Jason. - Jason. - Jason is an idea. - Yeah, it's like Jason. - But Jason, the idea is not even in this. - I mean like Jason's mom, maybe, like it was almost impossible. - Music, I don't know. - Ripping off Halloween, maybe it's the winner of this movie. - Friday the 13th is the winner, because it's the franchise. - Okay, yeah. - It's the franchise, yeah. - The IP. - The IP, yeah. Craig, what do you got? - I want to show respect to this movie, because I know movies like this paved the way. But, you know, when you go back and you watch the Bob Pettit highlights, it's not like you're talking about Bob Koozy, I was just about to say that. - Bob Koozy, yeah. - Sometimes it doesn't hold up. - She was saying Pamela was playing against plumbers and carpenters. - I couldn't get that with this one. It just. - I don't blame you. - I don't think any of the cast really popped either. No one really stood out of this movie to me. Like, sometimes there's an actor too, you're like, they're really bringing it. I feel like no one really like elevated. And I kill her mom, kill her mommy. Just, I felt so, so the rug was pulled. I was expecting Jason the whole time. And in the final fight with the mom, I'm like, "Oh, do you feel like we'll continue?" - I didn't think he was gonna like it. - It's almost an impossible movie for someone from his generation. - Also, if you had the expectation of it's a Jason movie and then Jason's not actually in it. - I'm watching like a 65-year-old woman fight. And like, this is the final moment, right? - But the final girl is probably one of the worst final girls. - Listen to that Craig over here. - Yeah, I didn't mean to talk about watching the view. - It's like, it's hard to come off of Texas chainsaw. - Yeah. And Sally yeah, and then go to a much enjoyed Bayhard fight over here, I will say that the final scene saves the movie to me Like I thought this movie was like I'd give it like a four or five and then that scene at the end is genuinely great Yeah, and bumps it up two points. I wonder it's not Netflix. I hope it's not the streaming thing where the movie's about to end And they give you like the 10 second countdown before they send in the next thing. No, they only they wait for the credits to do that Yeah, I hope they wait till we continue to do landmark horror or do you want to do more modern stuff? What are you thinking with the rest of October? I don't know Haven't haven't haven't unlocked it. This is nice because this is palatable stuff for me You know, it's not it's not hereditary. Well, it's also 87. Yeah, we're like if we did mid-summer next crack would show up Although hereditary is much scarier than mid-summer Yeah, it's a little bit more of like a horror do you guys do here comes the telephone boom You guys do Like the trash more accessible horror so you'll never see like You'll never see Hellraiser on here like you didn't watch those Hellraiser leprechaum all of that dumbass shit I never game am I missing Hellraiser? I never got into it. I was scary to me It was like it was it was one of those ones at a certain point It flirted with being a little bit more Like relevant than it actually became it didn't stand a test of time But like in the going to the movie to rent movies era like pin hit was one of those. I dig them I don't think those have had the revival I mean Friday probably because if it's Availability on like multiple streaming services. I think it's just kind of lived on It's funny that this one did the best of all the Friday the 13th Yeah, they get made the most money out of all of them Even when Jason came along. FAQs

The franchise originated as a direct rip-off of Halloween, with producer Sean Cunningham creating it in 1980 after seeing the success of John Carpenter's film. He placed an ad in Variety offering to make a movie called 'Friday the 13th,' and it quickly gained traction, leading to a yearly franchise that capitalized on the horror of teenagers being killed at a camp.

Jason is unique because he's not a typical monster; he's portrayed as a blue-blooded, almost mythological figure, like a nobleman from a forgotten past. Unlike other slasher killers, Jason is a true 'origin' figure, and his backstory ties into the first film's narrative, making him a central, almost legendary figure in the horror genre.

The first film is significant because it established the slasher genre's template: a summer camp setting, a group of inexperienced teens, and a mysterious killer. It introduced the idea of a recurring horror date (Friday the 13th), and it helped popularize the trope of a killer who returns year after year, which became a hallmark of the franchise.

It was a massive hit, grossing nearly $60 million on a minimal budget and becoming the 18th biggest movie of 1980. Its success sparked a bidding war, and it led to 10 sequels, proving the viability of the concept. It also became a cultural phenomenon, especially among teenagers and young adults, who saw it as a form of violent, visceral entertainment.

The film uses the trope of teenagers being killed as a reflection of 1980s cultural anxieties, particularly regarding youth, morality, and the loss of innocence. The characters are portrayed as reckless—smoking, having premarital sex, and being irresponsible—making their deaths feel like both a punishment and a commentary on societal decline.

Jason’s mother is a key character in the original film, portrayed as a powerful, mysterious, and deadly figure who appears in the final scenes. She is not just a mother, but a symbol of the franchise’s dark mythology—she is a seasoned killer, a former athlete, and a figure of relentless vengeance, adding depth and complexity to the horror narrative.
