The podcast features a heartfelt, conversational exchange between the hosts as they explore personal growth, emotional authenticity, and the value of friction in daily life. They discuss how embracing feelings—especially difficult ones—leads to deeper self-awareness and connection, drawing from real-life experiences like therapy sessions, relationships, and events like the Venice Film Festival. The hosts emphasize that friction, whether in interactions with others, in everyday routines, or in emotional moments, adds richness and meaning to life. They highlight the importance of vulnerability, admitting imperfections, and allowing emotions to surface without judgment. Themes of authenticity, self-acceptance, and human connection are woven throughout, especially in moments of vulnerability, such as their struggles with anxiety or the emotional impact of being downgraded on a flight. The conversation also touches on personal journeys, including therapy, fashion, and relationships, while celebrating small joys like shared meals, dance, and spontaneous moments of joy. The hosts advocate for more human experiences—like visiting brick-and-mortar stores or engaging in face-to-face interactions—over frictionless convenience. Ultimately, the discussion centers on a deeper appreciation for emotional honesty, growth, and the beauty of being present in the messy, real, and often unpredictable moments of life. This emotional journey is framed as both personal and universal, offering listeners a sense of connection and validation through shared experiences.
The following podcast is a deer media production. Hi there. I'm Benito Skinner. I'm Mary Beth Rohn. And this? Is? Right, right. Right, right. All right, shall we? It gives them walnut dance. I'm not familiar with this. So this is my Lee Cyrus. Okay, I haven't heard yet. And I mean this. This is only said with love. It's just 55 albums. Right. I think she's come out with an album every six months. Or I am like totally not. But some of them, she doesn't even really do like a press tour for it. Which I love. She's like, I'm not touring it. She's just like, new album just dropped. It's what I told you to do for your next special. Just kind of like this special came out. There wasn't even audience for it. No, well, I have a lot of ideas for that too. Wait, Jake, you have to sit on the couch where I can see you. Oh. Jake Samus is in the building. Famous Twink, as you said. Famous Twink from the Rosalia concert. Wait, wait, come here. Because I need to show them us too. And imagine just try to get in the head space of asking these two people if they're security. So this is this is my security that I hired by the way. A little lower, a little lower. You kind of are my security in a lot of ways. How do we look? We were like, your styles to the stars. We were like, yes. This is so when you start to become your stylist. Yeah, no, it's a mirror. It's a mirror. It's a mirror. Fucking relatable. I'm going to self this year. You, that's relatable. Cute top, by the way. Of Ollie vintage. I don't know if it's vintage. It's really cute. It's archive, we'll call it archive. What do you write for? Okay, I'm in the silk taffeta. Silk taffeta. I have a lot to say about silk taffeta. Also, every time I post you on my story, people are like hard launch. Well, he was on a date. He went on a date and the guy said, "So you and Benny broke up?" Wait, people, the rumor mail is really working over time. Yes, Jake has been in my butt. But it was only one. Well, that was for styling. That was literally for styling. That we were on a press tour. What do you expect? But I will say nostalgia is it. Well, nostalgia is what I write for. Nostalgia, nostalgia. Oh, that's fine. Well, we're going to do future nostalgia for right at some point. Yeah, I agree. Both the concepts and the records. And the record, because it's really powerful. All right, well, thanks for joining us. And just you can be over there. Let us know if you need anything. We're going to have Joe and the juice with him in 45 minutes. Cracker sandwiches for everyone. A round of crackers sandwiches. Me going, how many crackers sandwiches can I get for the people I love? The limit does not exist. It does not exist. I want to talk about readiness and how it can. It both can and can't matter. Like, I think I'm a lot better at not caring. Yes. But it's still. I'm like, we're going to get it done. Like, it doesn't matter. It's all going to happen. I totally-- It's like, it's really hard. Here's the thing. Because I was supposed to be exactly on time today. And I wasn't. And I'm annoyed because it's like, is there something I'm doing that's making this happen? Because I allotted and I planned. I know. And I respect your time so much. You just have to-- I don't know. It's like, for some reason, sometimes taking cars in New York. It's just like, whatever you-- whatever it tells you, it's going to be 20 minutes more. But we have enough time to do it. It's just like, I don't know why my body has a response. Type A must be such a crazy experience. I want to spend one day, is it? Maybe even actually only an hour. You want to get just a sooner? Yes. You're thinking about that. I think so, actually. Kind of gets into my ride today. It really does. We would like to get through. I wore a type like T to make you happy. And thank you so much. Shinkie, thank you. I guess we need to address the Venice film festival. So I was going to say, are we going to talk about the Italian job? All my new friends. The 3-5-5, you mean? The 3-5-5. They're calling it the 3-5-5 reboot. Making a spiritual sequel to the 3-5-5. I had the best time with these beautiful women. You're taking your mom to Venice. It's so cute. And she was Miss Congeniality. She made friends with everyone. Of course. I mean, she loves to party. So we had a couple of late nights. I'm usually heard with two pints. Oh, covering her nipples. Yeah, she stopped us. She stopped us on the docks at the hotel. [LAUGHTER] But-- She kept going, Brittany's to know. Check out these. Well, we-- look, I actually-- I can't-- there's things that I can't even get into. Which is also we're going to talk about. This is a sisterhood. Yeah. There's a sisterhood, and a bond that was formed at the festival. I could feel it. It's the Venice film festival. Oh, I could feel it. Genuinely had the best time. But the way I describe it was all these actresses that look like princesses, and I was their jester. So I was doing whatever it took to make them laugh. Spirits were high. We had physical comedy. We had bids inside jokes. We went to dinner last night, and you were saying some shit that I was howling at. What did you say at one point where I went? That's just insane. Oh, well, we were with someone that's a twin. Oh, yes. And he said that he and his sister have different birthdays. What did you say? It was so brain-wrotted. He said she was born in 1155. And I was born at 1201. And I was like, well, you're so singular. It was so-- And I think he was just like, no one else heard it. But I heard you say you're so singular. I go, where are you from in Italy? And he's from Argentina. Well, yesterday we were fully in psychosis. So at one point we were at this restaurant, and we were at a coffee shop. And I got like a self-sour espresso, by the way. Anything can be anything. It was something-- I tasted it. It tasted like a bomb. Anything. I assume this is what a grenade tastes like. Well, it's often hammer-level science. You said that you go fuck off an hammer. In coffee. The amount of sounds it took to make my drink think about that. I don't want to think about that. So broke the sound barrier. But I just learned how to use a credit card on my phone, because I still use safari. I'm kind of like a little boomer. Totally. We all have our boomer stuff that we do. I use a lot of emojis. Safari is so cool. And for when I was in the closet, the clearing history and clearing cash, like Chrome is a little too big brother. Safari to me, you can clear house. You can go on your dad's MacBook and look up Johnny Castle. Johnny Castle. And so I couldn't do that on Chrome. Chrome. Anyways, I just got this credit card, and I'm trying to figure out how to use it on my phone on that feature. Tap to pay. Which is cool, tap to pay. And I'm doing it. It's not really working. And Mary Beth just loudly goes, "You're so fucking broke." And I thought, "Imagine using this to a guy your dating." A guy I'm dating. And I'm like, why do these guys always like, why does it always go south? And then you overhear me going, "You're so fucking broke." Like you're so fucking broke. You told the guy from Argentina, who was Italian and Singular at the other night. But here's my thing. I think I want all my girls to do this to the guy they're with just to teach him a little bit of a lesson. You're so fucking broke. Well, it gets into my new thing too, which is dinner's on you. Dinner's on you. We should be able to say that. I think so. I have nothing to add. I mean, you should be able to say tonight, dinner's on you. Dinner's on you, right? With a friend, a coworker, someone you're dating. Oh, and when the bell comes, dinner's on you. Dinner's on you. Oh, sorry. Dinner's on you. You can give him that 100 watts mile. I want to talk about Duddy and Venice because we-- Look at my guy over here with his-- Well, Paul's here today. Paul's here, and he has a little fan. No, Paul's here today as a personal fan. Look at your hair blowing in the wind. All that technology is really hot. It's like heating up. Of course it is. This is a hot mic. Duddy on a jet ski in the Venice canals. I didn't see the dolphin while I was there, by the way. But I'm going to go back. Devastating. It'll be back during the next pandemic. It was there. I just didn't see it. Exactly. I FaceTime Mary Beth when she's in Venice. Mind you, we took like a little break. I got a huge colesore and grew a mustache, so I feel totally rested and good. But I FaceTime Mary Beth, and you brought up Duddy being in Venice, and immediately my brain went to her on a jet ski, Bubby's bouncing because she's not wearing a life jacket. She's just wearing pool floats. Floaties and heels. Yeah. And the water spitting out of the back of it. You can imagine how much she's taking down while she's there, by the way. I can. Yeah. Oh, good. And Lengocene, which is what they call shrimp, if I'm not mistaken. Oh, and by the way, she's doing one of those romance, like canoes. What are those called? Contola. Romance canoes. Romance canoes. Romance canoes. And I knew exactly what you meant. Galaxy. Oh, and you're the one with the galaxy brand. The galaxy brand is contagious. Duddy also eats her pasta with the spoon. So she can put a lot on the fork and then shovel it all in her mouth. Mm-hmm. So that's something that's more. Her favorite movie is Lady in the Tramp, by the way. Of course it is. Did you? Did you? Duddy Lord just dropped. Yes. So yeah, that's new Duddy Lord added. A lot of people have been messaging me about dressing up for her as Halloween. If you do that, like, all come. All know. Oh, they're going to dress up for her as her. That's amazing. Yeah. I wonder if there's anyone out there with an eye for Premiere Pro or even Final Cut. Like if you're totally distusted. I think I used Premiere Pro. But I want to see every bit of the lore. I just want to remember, because I don't necessarily know everything I've said at this point. If anyone actually though, okay, so we do have Reddit blocked on all devices between the two of us. But if you can go on there and start the Duddy Lord with just stuff that we've confirmed we true, including the tartan dress and stuff, we'll have our social media manager, Megan Hetzel. Yeah. Take it off. I think you guys would know better than we would at this point. I can't see anything anymore. My heart is getting broken a lot and I am going to talk about that today a little bit. Duddy speaks Italian fluently. I just wanted to add that. Yeah, of course. I think she speaks wide languages. And she always says chirogrotsie. And she speaks Mandarin as well. And Italy. I kind of do this thing that I will say shit like that and I'll try my best not in front of Italians, because I don't want them to think that it's like that I'm this bad at it, but I am this bad at it. And I always say chirogrotsie, just because it sounds so good off my tongue. It's very just sweet elements, but the Italian version. And I don't exactly know what I'm saying, but chirogrotsie. Isn't that how it sounds? Yeah, that sounds good. I like how it sounds. Yes. Yeah. That's just some Duddy stuff. That's some Duddy stuff. Yeah. Thank you, Charmone beauty for sending me Italy twice this year.
- When we edit that, can we do a deep voice on you? - Yeah, we'll do one take normal, one take deep voice. - Of our Monty Beauty. Thank you, too. - I love my Armani Beauty family. - This is E55. - Someone at the dinner was like, you brought your mom as your plus one, walked me through that. And I was like, well, she's just the best person I've ever met. So, why wouldn't I bring her to an event like this? - Yeah. - Free trip to Venice. Also, do you know how many times she brought us-- - Who did that person bring like their agent? - I'll tell you they were a plus one. I'll have you know. - Oh. - And we'll get into that later. But he was really sweet. It was just like a, it was seem like a genuine question. But I was like, well, and how many times has my mom brought me to Europe like so many? - Yeah. - So it's about like, it's about, you know. - I can't think of anything cuter than that. And also like-- - Also, she was full glam, full glam is on the house. She got glam both days. - Yeah, she should. - Peri is like red right now. She's full Jean Grey. - Oh, she were painting the town red. - We're painting the town red. - She reed. - Oh, my God, I love beekeepers, naturals. - He's a sin. - Okay, so I spray the propolis immune support throughout spray. They also have a nasal spray max. - Ooh. - It reduces histamine response. - We're nasal spray maxing. - Oh, God, oh my God, I can't stop news. - This is my maxing. It produces histamine response and flushes congestion while providing an invigorating and clearing sensation, helping you breathe better. When germs start to increase during six season, propolis immune support spray is a daily ritual that provides defense for the whole family. You can also just throw it in your purse or clutch or-- - Yeah, you can throw it in your clothes. - Exactly, and you take that out, and you spray it in your mouth, and it's so delicious. - A non-toxic nasal spray that cleanses and soothes nasal passages. You use daily as needed during six season to flush out irritants and soothe sinus irritation. Propolis reduces the histamine response against irritants. Yep. - Zylitol expands the nasal passage. - Yeah, it expands the nasal passages to ease congestion and saline solution naturally clears and moisturizes. - That's not all. - Well, there's also a raken oil, by the way, and it invigorates your sinuses for deep, refreshing breast. One more. - I want to talk about cantaloupe, cantaloupe, which you forced me to write down yesterday, despite the fact that this was one of those bits you were doing where I actually wasn't responding. - Yes, so-- - I didn't want it to continue. - Yeah, yeah, so I was doing spoken word at one point because I was so, I was a little jet lagged and a little like I hadn't seen you in a while and we had just kind of been tanning on your roof. And I was just like, and I just started doing spoken word at you. And then I got to you and I go, won't marry cantaloupe, cantaloupe, cantaloupe, cantaloupe. And I just kept thinking about cantaloupe, cantaloupe. And I the first person who's put that together, probably not, but I'm gonna say maybe-- - I think Shakespeare did it first, but he scrapped it. - In mid-summer night's stream. - In a mid-summer night's stream. - Cantaloupe, cantaloupe. All she said was no smoke in soap. Hey, hey, hey, hey. - Not looking at you. I'm not looking at you. - Understand that we understand that maybe this is meant to be. - Okay, I watched the brutalist on a laptop. - He's seen and heard. - I watched the brutalist on a laptop. - He heard it is good and learned. - I could do this literally forever to you, but see how she doesn't-- - I'm challenging you. - I'm challenging you. - Uh-huh. - Jake, what do you think about cantaloupe, cantaloupe? - Really? I think it's a good part of the fruit salad. I know people-- - I think cantaloupe is so-- - Oh, with salts? Okay, Barbados. - Okay, sweet and savory. - You're taking mango into the ocean girl. - That's my girl. - I actually could totally see him doing that. Taking mango into the ocean. - Of course, he basically-- - That should be an ADM for something. - Oh my god. - He's taking mango into the ocean, by the way. - He's taking mango into the ocean. That's an ADM. Let's figure out what it means. - But have you seen-- - Have you seen Rianna do that? In Barbados, it's like a thing. You dip the mango into the ocean, it's like salty. Oh, I loved it. There were all these photos of her doing that. I've consumed all of them. - You're blowing my mind right now. - Exactly, honey. - So I watched the brutalist on a laptop finally. - There was a building there. - And it was brutalist. - It was beautiful. - It was my favorite. - It was like a ruined dish. - Well, they ruined it. - When I sing brutalist by Kempetris, I immediately go to-- I have Britney Spears sing it for some reason. And I feel like that's saying something. - I understand it, though. But is it Britney Spears' painterly quality to the song? - Don't you agree? - It was a building there. It was brutalist. - It was brutalist. - Yeah. - And it was beautiful. It was a favorite. - It was a favorite. - Yeah. - She, god, I love that woman. Fuck, and I love Kempetris. I love that album. - Men's stories matter. That's the first thing I want to say about the brutalist. - Thank you. - Obviously gobsmacked by the opening title sequence, and then it would go straight to America. - Could you believe that opening, when the Statue of Liberty is upside down in the brutalist, it's literally like, it's full body chills all over and then. - Well, so he escapes like Nazi-occupied Europe, right? - Yes. - And immediately goes to get head, can't get hard, I mean, talk about relatable. - Right here. - I've never seen something more real in my life. First stop, whore house, can't get hard. Check. - And then I watched obsession on the plane. And I love this idea of putting a spell on a woman. You put a curse on her, and then you go to your friend, she's been acting so fucking weird randomly. Dude. - It fully tracks to me. His performance as like useless straight guy is like, it's so, and obviously her performance is like. - I mean breathable. - Unbelievable. - Well now she's an X-Men. - And I'm so excited. Who is she an X-Men rogue? - Maybe. Yeah, I care, remember.
they did a big announcement. - Oh God, totally. - I just loved seeing how real that was and that brings me to one anecdote I wanna tell, which could apply to really any of my exes, which is that I just wanna start the story at the end. We're gonna work backwards. - Yeah, yeah. - This person went nonverbal for two hours. He stopped dead in his tracks, started walking again. - Do I know which one? - I'll tell you after. - Okay. - And then went nonverbal for two hours. So he was telling me that Daniel Radcliffe used to wear the same outfit when Harry Potter first came out to her fog wards so that the paparazzi wouldn't think that they got new photos of him. After he said that, I was like, oh yeah, Jennifer Aniston used to do that in the 90s. She would wear these cargo pants with a tank top so that they wouldn't get new photos. And then he goes, you always have to have a better story and then didn't speak to me for two hours. So stay strong out there, girls. - Yeah. - There's a breakthrough ahead of you. - I love that he thought that that story was so much better than his. They're kind of just like, yeah, this is like a thing. - Well, I guess because she did it first or something. But then I found out that Madonna actually originated the language well before either of them. So I don't know. It was just really strange. But it's those little moments that you have flashbacks to where you go, no one has talked to me like that in a really long time because I'm single. - Do you miss it or no? - So I don't. - Yeah, okay. - Just like, imagine if one of your friends that's a girl said that to you. They just wouldn't. They would go, oh my God, that's genius, you know? - I definitely, there's something. So I recently got a therapist in the past year and it's been so cool. First session, I think she just hadn't been around someone who hates themselves this much. And so I think I kind of rocked her world first. - That's awesome. - Because she was kind of like, wait, you got some sauce on this. - Yeah. - And yeah, I think as you kind of go through that, you start to be like, wow, that is like the meanest thing anyone's ever said to me. And I had that issue where I would say things like that at like dinners or something. And I'm telling like what I think is a funny story and the whole table goes silent. - Is it, John early has a joke in something, I think it's in search party and I want to quote it, right? But it's so weird. He says like that when he laughing where he goes. That feeling when your hair falls out or something. - Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. - I actually think that's the direct flow. - It's like something like that and it's so cool. - He fully has, he goes bald by the end, I think. - I think so. - His hair's falling on Clems. - Yeah. - That feeling when your hair falls out. - It's on like TV years of it. But I was thinking about that of like saying that at the end to be like, oh shit, I thought I kind of-- - I should have added that to my story. Maybe he would have felt less fun. But it's just funny to be thinking you're having a conversation when the other person sees it as competitive. - Oh, totally. - Shading competitively. - Well, that reminds me of not to-- - You always had to have a better story. - And I kind of do. - Imagine not enjoying the better story and just being mad at it. - Exactly. Being like, wow, this woman just fucking embarrassed me. - Embarrass me in front of nobody, by the way. - And she won't let me wipe her. (laughing) Oh, what was I gonna say? Oh, it's making me think of another time you got treated horribly by a man, which is when you played a board game better than him. - Oh yeah. I mean, we've gone into that in detail on the pod and thank you for-- - You're begging for a new shooter to drop. - Oh, I know, I'm trying so hard, but I meet them too old. They're a little too lazy and unmotivated at that point. - Oh, but I love, oh wait, that's a joke in your special. I can't remember. - What? - The (beep) - We'll bleep it, but I thank you to the pod for giving me a safe space to speak out about my checkered pass with board games 'cause I really hadn't talked about it in like a decade when I brought that up 'cause it was traumatizing. - I love the thought that you hear dice slapping together and you think of Yachtsy and send you into like a full game response. - Psychosis. - Well, you'd be writing for today, darling. Today, interestingly, I'm writing for friction. - I fucking love that. It's this. And when I get to do this, Jake, you get this, right? - And then what are you writing for? - I will be writing for it, feeling feelings. - Feeling feelings. - I might go first. - I think you should go first. - So I feel like mine's pretty simple. It's really to the point. - It's a very Mary Beth ride. - It's a very Mary Beth ride 'cause it means a lot of things. Obviously, friction is like a thing in science and it's really important. It's like part of our universe. - Of course. - Our beautiful universe that we have. I don't know the formal definition. I won't be reading it from Miriam Webster. I don't have my phone. So I was reading out of my notebook. So if you want to look at the official definition of friction. - Nancy Drew. - Nancy Drew. - I'm gonna do a reboot of Nancy Drew 'cause I want you to wear little 60s do-up outfits. - Totally, yeah. - But she has a gun in this one. - With a cap. Well, yeah, set in the present day. - Yeah, yeah, she's a cop. - She's a police officer. But she's trying to change the force from the inside. - Yeah, of course. It's like Zootopia, which three was announced. Obviously, I'm excited. - Okay, I still haven't finished two yet. I can't wait until we pop pills and we shanghai and we go to Zootopia in shanghai. - We have to talk about our Monty Beauty. - We have our Monty Beauty. - Next trip. We have to talk about Asia when we're offline. Just about like, will we ever go? What's the plan? - I'm dying soon. - I want to go to Vietnam. - Oh my God, I would love that so much. I want to go there. I want to go to, oh God. - You know, I also haven't been to Australia. And I'm like dying to go like here. - That's crazy. - Didn't you say that you'd go down there to shoot something and she's like glad to know that's when you'll come? - I said, I'm sure I'll film something there at some point. She's only lived there 10 years. I mean, give me some time. - Come on, girl. I'm still cooking. - Come on now. - So friction is different than inertia and you can look up the difference. A inertia is not something I ride for, but friction. So someone told me, someone told me about an article. It wasn't even a headline that I saw. Somebody told me about an article that really stuck with me about how people are seeking more friction in their lives. They're moving away from this frictionless lifestyle. When you can sit at your house and you can have everything delivered to you at the push of a button, people want to go pick things up more. They want to have that face to face with their dry cleaner or their barista or whatever it is. Just being out in the world and having more experiences and more interactions, which of course, sometimes we go through phases where we don't want to be perceived. No matter what you do for work, that's just something that we do. I think having a dog has me in my life have more friction 'cause she needs to be walked. She needs to go outside. She needs to be fed. She needs to have a nanny when I'm not home. And I'm meeting a lot of people because I have a dog out in the world. Speaking of friction, actually after that cell-star Oppenheimer drink I had, I almost shit my pants on my dry cleaners. Wait, that's awesome. Yeah, that's friction. We did reach this peak of everything should be so convenient. And I mean, I just think we're like, I'm craving just more human experiences and more interactions. So as much as planning, and this is something I think in New York, we're really good at navigating friction 'cause we're out in the world all the time. We're taking a subway. We do five to 10 things in a day. We're in LA, they're always in the car. And it's like, you do one thing in a day and then your day's kind of over. Yeah. Do the thing even if it's going to, and I wrote for doing the thing. But even if it creates a little bit more friction, I think it just maybe will enhance your life. And you could like, I don't know, fall in love along the way. It's really about the journey. Totally. I would say the only thing that's keeping me from friction is that I go into any CBS or Walgreens and everything is behind glass. That's not even, that's like beyond friction. It's like, it couldn't even come here. That's a question. It's exactly, every time I see it, I think about the quiet place and how good it would actually feel if aliens came to go in there and just break those down. Just break it down. Recently, I really needed allergy pills. Like so desperately. I couldn't open my eyes. There were like little pussy willows and little pussy willows. Yeah, that's very evocative. Just got my sparkle back, randomly happens. Like I have nowhere. And I go in this moment was like, so I just like don't have a key to that one. And I'm like, totally. And that's I guess I just like have to go. Well, I mean, so that's kind of that on that. We actually like laughed together 'cause it was, she was just like, I mean, I'm sorry, this is like this sucks. Well, sometimes friction sort of insights camaraderie in this really beautiful way. Exactly. So that's the kind of friction that's beautiful. But I think you're right because I, before the pandemic, wasn't scared to be on the phone to make reservations. But I'm kind of, I get nervous right before, 'cause I'm like, God, what if I say something crazy? Who knows what they're gonna do? What the hell are they gonna treat me? ♪ John's road, down the John's road ♪ ♪ Draven maca, down the John's road ♪ Okay, so it's always fun to do an ad read without Mary Beth because I get to listen to her ads after she listens to mine. K-18 is a biotech engineered hair care brand on a mission to unlock your fullest expression. Without hair damage, I'm obsessed with the leaving conditioner stuff. K-18's Air Wash Dry Shampoo is best-selling non-Arosal Dry Shampoo for all hair types. I'm obsessed with the K-18. They have a great kind of like detox shampoo. Yeah, the woman that cuts my hair is obsessed with it. My concern is just like build up and I think also like using too many products because when you do that every day, you get a lot of scalp build up and they can be really dry because you do have to wash. Well, also it's like does your hair get greasy oily or limp between wash days? Do you work out and have to put off sweating hot yoga lifting because of the extra work your hair will need after? Do you hate the gritty starts you build up that most dry shampoo's behind like all these things? Like you can solve it with K-18. Of course I so hear that friction, that duality, this. Even when we went out for fruio the other night or Greek, the Greek fruio thing. That was so fun. We met bronies and one of them, he brushed his shoulders off. And that's direct friction by the way. I had a really, I had a moment that I'm not proud of on a Delta flight recently. The friction came about because the plane was downgraded. So even though I had a lay flat seat when I got there and this was I paid for it and it was a red eye. So I showed up in the plane, it had been downgraded. It was the second time that's happened to me in the last month on Delta. So I said to the flight attendants, I was like I do think you guys really like have to tell us this before we like show up to board the plane because it's just now. Like I would have gotten on a different flight. And then the flight attendant was like yeah we don't have your food either. And I was like okay well I was like it's just like now I'm like I was expecting you to sleep for six hours and now I'm not. I don't mind the food of it all but like I was very upset and I didn't hide it. And then I looked at them before I sat down I said I know it's not you guys. I'm just saying like if you expect a lay flat seat and this is very law-roach. Yeah why don't they? This was not friction. This was like just actually being like like sort of scammed. And so I feel bad about it. To the flight attendants I'm sorry for my attitude but I was honestly I was devastated. I almost started crying and I know it sounds so dramatic but like we had had a really really busy week in LA and I needed to sleep. And it threw off my whole week last week of like going to sleep last night. One sleepless night can throw off your whole week when you're 35. So I know I probably sound privileged but if you pay if it's really it's Delta it's not the person. It's like I feel like if you pay for something you should get it but that's just me. And I'm not cutting this because like I will say this is the hell I'm willing to die on. And I think that's so fine. I mean honestly anyone if we're really all looking in our hearts if you paid the money to have lay flat and at like a little hot sexy meal coming out of some foil I'm expecting it. Also for me I it's so crazy me that people can skip meals. If I do my whole body shuts down I'm nauseous I'm sick to my stomach like so if I am expecting that I'm going to eat and I don't have a little snackies. Because I didn't know how to plan ahead. I don't have a Jersey Mike's and beef jerky in here. Like what am I supposed to do? Well there was a baronee behind me who we bonded over it. She DM me I saw it as we were leaving the flight. She said how is your night sleep. She goes how is your night's sleepy fucking bitch. It was just like it really just threw off my whole shit. So I was sorry but I then there was camaraderie I guess that came was born out of it was born. So that's kind of like we don't want that friction. So friction can be bad. We're talking about she can be bad. Go and talk to the guy at your bodega. Have some fun go out there interact with people. I would also say go to brick and mortar stores. There's no inventory but like go check it out. But you could order online in the store. We can ship it in and I'm like fuck it. Absolutely why not. So I think generally I'm loving friction this year. I'm loving friction on my thighs lately. I remember how much friction I had when I wore APC petite standards in college. I didn't know people would ask me about APC jeans and I'd be like well yeah the crotch always blows out and they're like no it doesn't and I'm like okay maybe it doesn't but I I love that friction. I love the friction of my booty pressing up on you and pressing up on pants and getting given somebody a boner. Giving somebody a job. Is that so crazy for girls in middle school like the fact that that's what dancing was to us. I think it's the first time you feel powerful. Really catching bees because I do feel that. Catching print. Not catching print. Catching print. The whole room just went so Jake just walked out. Yeah. Catching print it's kind of like to me it's like I just cook something Betty Crocker. Because well it goes the brutalist could never. No. Love the movie by the way. Isn't it so good. What a fabulous piece of media. It gives me like full chills. I have so many questions how they made it. I just like did they build that building. Also the concept of I don't know like how an architect would feel about it but like the building itself I wonder who designed it. It is like unbelievable. The production designer. Well you know. You find out later. Sorry when you find out later that he designed the building. Sorry if you haven't seen the brutalist this week. You need to watch it just do it. Designed it like in secret and it being about him and his wife in camp. Oh my god. It's so good. I obviously watch the talk back with the production designer and a bunch of the other people involved because I got home drunk last week and I put it on at one in the morning and I learned a lot. The production designer like designed the building. See that's unbelievable. Incredible. What are like that must have been such a gift but also a curse because it's like it's one of those things that I think only Cruella has really nailed where there's one big dress that's supposed to shock you. I think that dress in Cruella that turns out to be Beatles is like as good of a movie dress as we've gotten where it's like so much is put on this one dress. Yeah. It's hard to nail. It's really hard to do that and like to have I love that I'm see I can Cruella brutalist like that's the friction I can make. And the world there's and it's there is like you get it. You get it. Totally. But to me that oh my god in the cross and oh. But also the library. Everything was just. Every performance in that film is unbelievable and seeing Adrian Brodie's art after I'm gonna buy some. You should have you seen his art. No. It's my favorite thing in the world. Okay. We're gonna look it up out. You're not ready. It's like Monopoly man. Great. That's awesome. It's our pop art. It's our pop art pop even. All right. Let's talk about feeling feelings. So I am writing for feeling feelings which I'm going more of the emotional route today. I just wanted to talk about it. I got a therapist in the past year and I think I've had some great breakthroughs of things that we've talked about and I feel like I am in the privileged spot of being able to afford a therapist every week and getting these things. So I'm like I'm gonna share this with the group and hopefully it will make anyone feel better or seen or heard or if you get any tips along the way. Take them and I hope you can apply them to your life. But my girl her name's Brit and we just have this camaraderie. We have this friction. She challenges me and something she said early on was I kept like trying to solve all these things and she's like you know you really can just like feel a feeling like and it probably will pass in time. But trying to solve it trying to run trying to always appease like something they'll just get worse and and it kind of is like beautiful to feel them. And I think in the work that we do in like writing scripts and acting and stuff I have found it as such a use for resource. It does make some of those things more like painful and like and I can see that and like and now I've seen five episodes of season two your performance like literally breaks my heart so good. But I can kind of see it in the work and I'm really proud of myself for feeling feelings and allowing them to be there. The one thing that I am finding tricky sometimes on this podcast is like because you know because I
I run a show and I like sometimes don't feel comfortable sharing all these things because I'm like, there are people who work with me and who are employed on a show that I'm like the head of. So at times I do feel like I can't necessarily say those things because they make me seem like I'm mentally unwell or like with girls and that would like put their jobs in jeopardy and so I feel like giving us some grace on the podcast to at times like have to, I think edit down things and maybe not tell the whole thing of a story. - And that's beyond your job. Like that's even what's like their stuff going on and my family that I would love to talk about. But it's like we have to protect the people we're close to and while I'm comfortable putting myself on blast clearly in any way shape or form because I am, I am an open book. - Yeah, in a horror. - It's like we're in a horror and a slut and a bitch. - We have to again cancel this witch. - Bitch, mother, child and love her I think. - Yeah, yeah, it was about to say. - But I just think, yeah, we're, I hope, you know, we're still having fun and we're sharing a lot. - Yeah, I'm trying to, it's complicated. - Yeah, and something that has been really helpful and I feel like this would be probably really helpful for a lot of women who are experiencing guys in the car who are mad at them for having a better story than them. As we talked a lot about like your narratives and knowing like your narrative and returning to it and being like people can think anything and they can project anything onto you. But you know, just like return to who you are and allow that to like settle there and it's really been so helpful, I think. - No, you're narrative. - So they're like the core. - No, you're narrative, feel your feelings and go where you're liked. And I feel like, and you're gonna just like, kind of be cruzant. - Oh, my girls, it's a big year for my girls. - Going to the gym can be discouraging, especially if you're putting in the work but barely seeing changes. But I've just, yeah, I've like, I talked to therapy with something that I did not since I was in London, abroad, and that woman told me you're gay. You're gay. But getting back into it has been really amazing. So I guess I'm also writing for that. But something about feeling the feelings and it's been something like the other day, I was like missing someone and then yesterday, I was feeling like anxious with you. So we just like talked about about it. It's just allowing all those things to be there and not running from it all the time and not trying to compensate for me. God. Well, we kind of hold a mirror up for our jobs, but then I feel like our therapists are holding the mirror up to us. Yeah, to be like, you know that she said something where I was like, oh my God, she watched me kind of go in a spiral. So I had a colesore and I set it to her before anything. Yeah. And she's like, it's crazy you think I care. Like, why can we get into that? She goes, we're so fucking broke. She said, okay, her piece, let me hear you out the fuck. Yeah, and then she called me broke. But something about that moment and she was like, let's talk about your feeling there. You needed that. And I was like, I felt like I needed to be perfect for even this therapy session or else you'd like judge me or like think less of me or something. I don't know, there's so many things we get caught up in. And I don't know if any of this makes any sense, but I hope like a tiny lick of it will resonate with someone, but I've been feeling feelings lately. And it's also allowed for really big, beautiful feelings as well, which I mean, it's what separates us from the primates, right? It's like, isn't that the whole thing? We were doing something fun in LA, which people will know about soon enough. And I had so much gratitude for this and meeting you also allowing for those feelings of like excitement to feel even bigger and not feeling like you have to get right back into work. I'm trying to sit in things more. And I think even I've had a lot of moments of gratitude and I think Venice Film Festival, there were so many pinch me moments of just like, I'm so grateful to be here with my mom, like how special. - In archival. - In archival. - Our money. - Yeah, that dress, really. - Both dresses. - I can't even pick which one was my favorite. Like I just felt. - So I have a favorite. - I know. - I know. - It's hard to like that first when you wore that Charlize Theron, or it's like that truly is the Italian job to do. - My cousin texted me going, "I just wanted you to know Charlize has spelled wrong in your caption, I don't know if that matters." - My cousin. - So nice to have family that like you do that. - He was just like looking out for me. - That's awesome. - And then I think also even being at dinner last night 'cause it's the first day of Fashion Week. And I was at dinner with Delma Veney and three of the most handsome gay guys I've ever seen in my life. I was wearing a sheer dough and skirt and we were at Lucian and I just was like, God, I love my life right now. - And Harry Coke Zero, so me too. - Well, you had two Coke Zero's. - Oh my God, don't tell them I'm off the wagon. - Oh my God, you're off the wagon. - Yeah. - I just like was looking around like, wow, this is so fun to be here. And I think I felt a lightness just from not having anyone romantically involved with me right now. And I think like how free I feel is actually scary. Like how much better I feel is a little bit like, I don't know what it indicates for the future, but I had to feel those feelings. And I had to sort of hit rock bottom again for some reason. - Yeah. - But I feel like I balanced back a lot quicker. And I'm feeling feelings of just being like, I feel really lucky that we get to be storytellers and artists and hopefully bring people joy. And but we can't always be on all the time. - No, have you ever had your darkest time be shot right in front of this background? 'Cause I, every now and then, a TikTok comes up on one of those, I think some of those are run by like, AI bots. - I think so too, but I think one of them's run by a person. - Yes, who I love. - Yeah. - And I've talked to them, but one is like fully bots where they like just keep having like, read, like the repeats of our path. - Yeah, I know exactly what we're talking about. - But one was me in the dead of winter, writing season two and like, I've never been sadder in my life. So that was, it was such a jump scare. And I'm like, well, I've just, you and therapy, it's funny what we do because I do think both of us are also private people. So it's funny doing this job. - Yeah. - I think at times, 'cause I'm like, I just naturally, like if I'm going through something, like I'm hunkering down and it's how I'm calling you. And I'm like writing a show and no one seeing me probably for a while. And I would never share it with people. Like I just, I don't feel comfortable doing that. - Well, it's duality. - Duality. - I ride for feeling feelings. - Sweetie, they're happy to have you. - How could you ever think I wouldn't? - You could rule them if you wanted to. - I know, I'm working on it. - Steam punk's still waiting, by the way. I was just in London and a few steam punkers came up and they're like, wait, I'm not ready yet. I'll get there. - Is there doing the juice here? - Yeah, fuck. - Maybe Cracker sandwich is that I've been looking at for 25 minutes. - Oh! - So, thank you for bringing us to the pod. I think-- - I literally just did that to make it work. - I know. I was cracking up in the corner. - Paul hasn't laughed this whole time. - He stood over he did, but it was worth it for that.
- Best about your Jennifer Aniston story. It was Paul that you were talking about. - I know, that's my ass. It's crazy to be on set with him. You know, any revelations and therapy that you wanna bring, we're happy to have them. - Well, yeah, and it's the same as like, when I talked about intrusive thoughts on here. - Yeah. - Those, it's really helped me also feeling them. That's a part of it too. It's like allowing those to happen and being like, I don't have to solve all this. - Well, I was chatting the other night and I'm like, do we think this might be intrusive thoughts? - And I thought. - You said, uh, shut the fuck up. - Yeah. - You said, I don't think so. - No, I, oh my God. I'm trying to find a way to put that into something or read it into a script. I think Lena just did it so perfectly in girls where it was like counting in that episode about her OCD. But it is so funny. On TikTok, these like McDonald's toys came up and I was like, oh, me collecting those was like actually a form of that. Like I felt sick to my stomach until I saw all of them aligned on my desk. And if there was a missing one, I was like, my mom will die. - Yeah, isn't it fun to sort of be able to name those things? - It's been amazing. - It's been beautiful. - And also by the way, by feeling feeling, you can name them and be like, I'm experiencing this right now. I'm experiencing deep gratitude and love for my bestie and for iconic Twinkled and St. Thomas. - Well, do you ride for friction? - Friction is so major. I love what it does with fire. I love what it does on my booty cheeks. - It's so powerful. - Friction's amazing. And I think like we need friction. Friction also is beautiful in relationships, I think. And we, it's funny. Someone to me was like, you and Mary Beth never fight, right? And I was like, we never fight. We talk about everything. Like nothing is, I've never felt something and didn't say it to you. - We can talk about it and also because we are so different. It's like, obviously we're gonna have things we don't like meet at the same place. - Yeah. - You have to talk about stuff. - You have to. - It has to all be on the floor. And it's all, it's to me, it's friction. And I think in living in New York, like you were saying about LA, it's just harder to have friction when you're kind of just in a car and driving everywhere that it's been so amazing to have friction back. I've loved like being in a neighborhood that I'm living in and like popping around and finding a coffee shop. And I think that friction, it's some, friction is a good word. - Yep, it's not a, it's not a four letter word. - Yes. - You just reminded me of something for the next episode. - Today, I feel very at peace. This was really a nice, - Me too. - And the speeder of crackers. - It's a nice, let's have crackers stand, which is let's break bread. This is what they ate at the last supper. - Oh, I know. - Judith got the tuna cotto, by the way. - Yeah, that's, and I get the, I just switched it up to, - I got the joke. - I know, I know. - She totally didn't fucking see that coming. - Someone made a take talk about, they were saying how the last supper is like, it's so crazy. They're like, if you ever think you're petty, like Jesus brought all his friends to one dinner. One of them, he knew his backstabbing him. He called them all out at the table of Barry and Mary Beth Burone. - Yep. - I love you, kid. - I love you, kid. - Cancelo, canelo. (upbeat music) - Oh, my exit. - Any big eyes in the road. - There you go. (upbeat music) - Rye, rye, rye.
