Hello everyone, how's it going? My name is Andrew, you are listening to the Q-Loop's English podcast. And this is bonus episode number 177. Now I feel like it's a stretch. It's not even really fair for me to call it bonus episode number 177 because this is going to be almost like half an episode, just a mini episode for you today. Maybe it should be bonus episode 176.5, but I think if I call the file that, then that will cause some issues with the dot in the file name. So bonus episode 177, it is. And usually what I do here in the bonus episode series is tell you some stories from my everyday life. But today it's going to be a little bit on the shorter side. And guys, the reason why it's on the shorter side is that I am hard at work. On the new Q-Loop's website and app. And we're almost finished with it. I've been working on this thing for over a year now, putting my blood, sweat, and tears into this project. And it's almost ready to launch, I think, definitely. Unless there's like some huge issue that I'm not anticipating. It will be ready in July. And we're going to roll out the new app and the new service and the new website to Q-Loop's members. First, especially members who are part of our discord community. You guys are going to get first access to the new app. And I'll be making an announcement about that to our Q-Loop's members on the discord server within maybe the next week or so. So I'm so excited. You guys are going to be shocked. Our Q-Loop services are getting a major, major upgrades. And it's going to be easier and more fun and more enjoyable and more interesting to learn English with Q-Loop's with our new app, with our new website. And yeah, I'll save all the details for a little bit later. Once we launch, then I'm going to give a tour of all the new features and functions. And it's so cool. I can't wait to share it with you guys. So because I'm hard at work on the new app, I have to cut the bonus episodes down a little bit because there's just not enough time in the day. There are not enough hours in the day to do everything. And so I'm focusing on getting the app finished. And then once that's finished, we can return to a regularly scheduled bonus episodes once a week or so. So please bear with me. Just be patient for a little bit longer. I know many people enjoy listening to a new bonus episode to start the week. But you're going to have to wait just a moment for that. I apologize. However, I do have a couple of other announcements, not just this announcement about our new app and new website, but also in July here coming up in just a few days. We're going into July into the genuine summer now. And of course, we have monthly challenges on our Discord server that are run by our Discord moderator and study guide writer and English teacher extraordinaire Alina. And this month's challenge for July, it's going to be a vocabulary challenge/grammar challenge because what you will have to do is make sentences using adjectives that have both an i and g form and an e d form. Alina was kind enough to record a promo for the challenge. And so I'll let her do the honors and explain and describe what the July challenge is all about. So let's throw things over to Alina and take a listen. Hello everybody. I'm here to tell you about our July challenge. This time we'll be focusing on pairs of adjectives that end in either ed or i and g. For example, board and boring, excited and exciting, or interested and interesting. These adjectives are confusing as they make a lot of English learners confused. Do you see what I did there? The idea for this challenge was inspired by our July grammar class on this very topic. So it's ideal for those of you who are planning to join both as it's a great way to get lots of practice and finally feel confident using these adjective pairs correctly. So here's how the challenge works. Every other day you'll receive a question featuring these adjectives. You can answer with either text message or voice message, whichever you prefer. As you answer the questions, you will naturally practice using these adjectives in real conversations. And you'll also be able to read or listen to other members' responses, which of course will give you even more examples to learn from. If you have any questions along the way, I'll be there to help you. And when you complete the challenge, you'll receive or certificate as a reward for all your hard work. I feel like now that I've got the mic recording here, I should say just a little bit before I wrap up. I don't know. I've been working on this app so hard that I haven't been doing a lot of things other than web development in my free time. But I have been keeping a very close eye on the World Cup. Have you guys been watching the World Cup at all? At the start of the World Cup, I was really excited because I have three horses in this race. To have a horse in the race is an idiomatic expression that means that you have your country or some thing associated with you that is participating in a sporting event. So I have three horses in this race for the World Cup. There are three teams that I'm supporting. Obviously because I'm a Canadian, I'm cheering for Team Canada. Let's go Canada. Also because I live in South Korea, I'm cheering for Team Korea as well. Let's go Korea. And then also Scotland because I have some historical and genetic ties to Scotland. My mom is Scottish. So I guess that means I'm half Scottish. So yeah, go Scotland as well. Now, if you had asked me at the start of the tournament, out of those three teams, who would be able to go to the round of 32? Now we're just going into the round of 32 as I'm recording this. It starts in just a day or two. Well, I would have said probably South Korea. South Korea would be the team that makes it through to the round of 32. Scotland's a small country, small population. You know, they're great. But I don't know if they've got the talent. If they've got the skill. Canada, you know, we're a bigger country. We've got a population now probably around 50 million people. We've got immigrants from all over the world. We can get the best athletes from each country, right? We can draw on different skills and talents that different people from around the world have. That's a great bonus for us. But we're not really a football nation or a soccer nation, as we'd say, in Canada. Although I'm coming around to calling it football. It just makes so much more sense. And the rest of the world calls it football. I want to call it football as well. But to be understood in Canada, I have to say soccer. But because we're not really a football nation, a soccer nation, we're an ice hockey nation. You know, we've been getting better and better and better, but I don't know. I didn't think Canada would be too, too good this tournament. And also our best player is injured right now. Alfonso Davies. He's injured. So I didn't know how well Canada would do. However, South Korea is a pretty good football country. They've got some amazing players and they've got lots of talents, lots of passion. So I thought Korea, of course, would make it through to the round of 32. And I'd probably be saying goodbye to Canada and Scotland and just be focusing on South Korea. Now, of course, it would be awesome if all three countries made it through to the next round, the round of 32. But Scotland, bye bye. South Korea, bye bye. They didn't make it. Oh my gosh. And it's a big deal here in Korea, guys, especially with the coaching of the South Korea team. I won't get into the details. I know our South Korean listeners, they have broken hearts. And believe me, too, I have a broken heart. I was expecting more from the team and the coaching. So we're all feeling pretty let down here in Korea about our World Cup effort this year. However, I'm so stoked for Canada. We are through to the round of 32 and actually tomorrow morning at 4 a.m. local time here in Seoul 4 a.m. we are playing South Africa. And I've got a lot of saffor friends. A saffor is somebody from South Africa. We call them a saffor kind of a friendly nickname for a South African. So I've got some saffor friends here in Seoul. So we got a little friendly competition team Canada versus team South Africa. And I woke up last week at 4 a.m. to watch the Canada game and Canada lost. But it was a good game. And I thought it was entertaining, especially at the end we almost tied the game, almost drew. But it was a game that didn't really matter because we knew we were going on to the next round anyways. So it wasn't too significant. However, it was fun to watch. But waking up at 4 a.m. almost killed me. I felt like I didn't recover for the next three or four days. I was tired all week last week. It was terrible. And so tomorrow's game is also at 4 a.m. But this game matters. The last game was insignificant. It didn't matter if we lost or drew or won. We are probably still going through to the round of 32 teams. But it's make it or break it. It's do or die for this match against South Africa. And so I'm going to do it again. I'm going to wake up at 4 a.m. tomorrow to tune in to the match. And I think my problem was last time I just went to bed at my regularly scheduled bed time, which is around midnight or so. I usually go to bed around midnight, which I hate. I would love to go to bed around 10, 10, 30, but in reality, usually ends up around midnight. So I think tonight I'm going to have to go to bed much earlier. I'm going to aim for 8 p.m. We'll see. That's like an hour and a half from now. That's pretty early 8 p.m. That would mean that I get my full 8 hours of sleep in before the match. Moriolistically probably 9, 9, 30, but that should be good enough. And yeah, I'm so stoked. So go team Canada. You know, Canada is co-hosting this World Cup. And so to watch some of these matches actually being held in this big stadium in Vancouver called BC Place is so cool. It's awesome that there are some World Cup games there. And actually I was reminiscing with my mom. I sent my mom a text message while I was watching the team Canada game. And I said, "Mom, I have this vague memory that when I was like an elementary school student for the first four or five years of elementary school, I actually lived in a suburb of Vancouver. To the farthest suburb of Vancouver called Langley, I grew up in Langley until I was around 10 or 11 years old then moved to Kelona, which is several hours away from Vancouver. So I kind of feel like Vancouver in a way is my hometown and I texted my mom while I was watching that game. And I said, "I have this vague memory of playing soccer in BC Place where the World Cup game was happening at that moment." And I was like, "That can't be true because this is a huge stadium that holds thousands and thousands of people big enough to hold a World Cup game." And my mom messaged me back right away, "You know, mom's always message you back right away. At least mine does. It doesn't take very long for my mom to respond to my messages." And she said, "Wow, you've got a great memory, Andrew. You remember that? You did. You played a game." I played soccer growing up until probably around high school. And now I kind of regret quitting at high school watching the soccer on TV these days got me really fired up and I'm like, "I want to play again." But yeah, I quit around high school. So I definitely in elementary school, I was a soccer player, you know, just a little kids league, but still very fun. And I guess, yeah, I did have a game in BC Place now. It wasn't sold out. There weren't thousands and thousands of fans there. But that's a cool memory that I got to relive this week watching Team Canada play in BC Place Stadium, Canada hosting the World Cup, Canada going on to the round of 32. Very, very exciting. For me, I hope your country is doing well as well. There's a lot of good soccer players out there, a lot of good teams. And it's, I don't know. I think it's really cool to see all of the countries coming together and supporting each other. And it's a little bit cheesy, but the power of sport, it's like one of the only things that can unite us this way, unfortunately. Not for me. Not for you. You know, I think QLips listeners, we all have open minds and we embrace different cultures and we love that, right? It's awesome. But there's something special about sport that can draw us together even closer than we already are. It's really cool. It's a cool tournament and I've been enjoying watching it every morning as I drink my morning coffee and eat my morning oatmeal and blueberries and get ready for my day. It's really fun.
