The AFL Fantasy podcast discusses recent rule changes affecting ruck contests, emphasizing a shift from bounce-downs to ball-ups and restrictions on pre-contest wrestling and center-line crossing. These adjustments are designed to accelerate gameplay, likely reducing stoppages and boundary throw-ins. The changes are expected to disadvantage physical ruckmen who rely on strength and wrestling, while benefiting agile players like Tim English and Luke Jackson, who excel in running and jumping. Fantasy implications include potential drops in hit-out numbers and scoring for some rucks, with possible increases in midfielders or hybrids taking ruck roles. Experts advise monitoring early-season data to assess real impacts, noting that team strategies and positional classifications may evolve accordingly. Overall, the rules encourage faster, more fluid play, altering traditional ruck dynamics and fantasy valuations.
Welcome to the official AFL Fantasy podcast with The Trader. Get over the Traders, I'm Roy, I coached Destroyer, I'm here with Warning. Coach of the Wondorf. And KELVENATE DOOR. And KELVENATE DOOR. Boys and my dogs are more exciting to you today. We have looking at the rocks, which, as frustrating as it is, it's actually really quite an interesting discussion point. This place is a very interesting Wondorf. There's been a lot of discussion in this process because I don't think anyone's got any rock and audio here, what's going on. That is true. Because we've had some changes, some rule changes in the off season, which is getting everyone all up and about. I think they know what's going on or in our case, probably thinking we actually don't know what's going on. I feel like I do. I do. I do. But usually when there's something technical like this, we usually do go to the dog. That's it. Say dog, can you just tell us what we're doing? Let's look at these rule changes. I can't. What we've got here. The first one, let's even just start with probably a big one. No, send a bounce. Oh, come on. What? So they're just going to ball it up. OK. So there's no, it's still CBAs. Send it ball. Yeah. Oh, we're definitely sending out. CBAs. Yeah, CBAs. But yeah, so they're going to ball it up. So I guess a little bit of the sporadicness of the bounce goes. What? OK. What is they throw at crooked? Do they re throw? They definitely re throw at crooked. They do. They do. Yeah, they do. So there's one. Now while you're at the center ball up, so you can't actually cross the center line and you can't engage. That's the other part. So the wrestle rock. Oh, that's interesting. WrestleMania is not going to be there as it was. So the big beast that's for row their way to interview. Well, did you notice when Grundi was dominating, dominating, he was making use of that wrestle rule. It was cutting their runner up and all sorts to the other rockmen. That's interesting. So you have to run a jump. You've got to run a jump. Run a jump only. So that's something there. And then the other ones too, we've got the last disposal out of bounds. So we've, I don't know if this is going to make a massive change because pretty much if you're disposing of the ball and it's gone out of bounds in a lot of cases anyway. Yes. It was insufficient attempts. Of course, of course. So we'll see how that looks. So it's not like a last touch or anything like that. I feel they've been setting us up for that rule for a number of years. They have. But that's going to be one thing. So there might be fewer boundary throwings. There will be a few. A few. There will be a few. I have a few. I actually have spoken to someone about that. Have you? Five per game. Okay. That's what it drops. Yeah. Right. Okay. And then the other one too is that if the rocks, so we've still got the rock nomination there. But if they don't get there, sorry mate. If you're a bit slow, get in there, they're not going to wait for it. Oh no. Big dust. Well, it's going to be. So they probably might not get it. Yeah. Good. So on a little nutshell, like a little base level, I think that we're going. There's fewer stoppages. Yes. Okay. I'm ticking that off. Right. How many? It could be one per game. It could be quite a few. So what did your sources say on that one? Really? How many lesser game? Maybe that's what he said. Five. Okay. Five a guy. So the thing is then. Okay. What springs to mind initially? So few less hit outs. Definitely less hit outs for the ones that wrestle their way into the hit outs. Yes. The ones that are jumping again, but the beneficiaries of the hit out numbers follow up. Which are only one per one per hit out anyway. But yeah, the follow up tackle work. Yeah. What about when you purposely tap it to the other team, so you can crunch it? Exactly. Look at you. It's. Does that block, does that affect him? It does. It has to. It has to. It has to. I've got him ranked very highly at the moment. It's basically designed to speed the game up. Yeah. So if you are a lumbering, Ruckman, and we're not going to say their name, because that would be disrespect. Yeah. But it's going to favor the more agile Ruckman. Well, if you're in a Robic Ruckman that covers the ground, runs on top of the ground, you can have a few days running. Yeah. Yeah. If you're a gut running Ruck. So we've got a few ideas. We're going to chat to someone that might have a few more ideas. Well, because he's got numbers in front of him. He can back it up. Let's get him on the line. And here he is. We've got Freco on the line. Freco, welcome to the show, mate. Thank you, warning. Thanks again for having me on. Well, we are scratching our heads a little bit over these Ruck rules. We're just spoken about what we think or whatever. But what are your initial reactions? Because we've got all these. Yeah. So there are a few little rules there that are going to affect Rucks in some way. I'm sure that your brain went straight to fantasy when you saw them come through. Yeah, for sure. I think the most topical one is the last disposal rule between the arts. So for all of the numbers, there would have been about six to six and a half paid per game in 2025, which is a huge number. But it still is something. So the expectation is, OK, so there's six, six and a half, few of stoppages, more throwings rather between the arcs. The likelihood is we might see a drop in scoring for the Ruck. But in saying that, it's not like the throw-in is going to be gone completely from the game. We are still going to have the throw-ins between the arcs. The umpire will still have some discretion there to give either a free kick or say, hey, throw it in. You know, if the ball goes to a contest and the wing and it spills out and goes out of bands, it will still like to have throw-ins. So it's probably not something to be too concerned about at this stage. And as I've said to you, warning a few times, we need a bit of sample size to sort of make a call on these things. It's one thing to say, yeah, scoring is going to drop. But until we're about five or six rounds in, we can have a look at the numbers and say, OK, well, this is what happened last year. This is happening this year. So we've had a bit of a change. So yeah, it's one of those things where, I mean, it sounds pretty simplistic, but you do need to wait and see how it plays out. Freak, I can only, I'm just asking for a friend. Can I just get you to double checks? Are you sure it was six and a half and not a big deal? About five. Who is different than six? No, we're going by, both teams can buy it. So six, six and a half are going, we've been both on two games. But they're ready to leverage. So some games will be more, some games will be less, but that's the average. I think the key thing here, we need to sort of keep an eye on these team ball movement. So when things transition from D50, the comp average for using the corridors around 18%, so the wing's 35% and boundaries 47%. Yeah, wow. Right. So wanting to rebound 50s of either boundary. So it'll be interesting to see if clubs pick that up or if they like that. Well, we're a bit of a chance to turn it over here. Let's just go wing or I'll be surprised if they're going corridor because that is the risky play. But yeah, it's one of those numbers that I said, we need to keep an eye on it a little bit. But they're being sent there on that wing. Like isn't it? Not going boundary. Like going. Very high. I mean, if you look at teams allowing the sancties to be entered more than anyone else, free out was the number one team using the wing and we had put out a like using the corridor more than anyone. So that was a signature of Ken Hinckley's coach like the corridor, but we've got Josh Carr in charge now. So he may look to mixing stuff a bit. Yeah. Okay. Does the rule, you know, how they're going to be more strict with the stand rule? Does that mean the corridor is a tiny bit safer to attack? You think so. I mean, from what we've read so far over the preseason, the umpires are going to be pretty red-hike with that stand rule. And just like any rule, I think they try and sort of put their foot down early on and make sure it runs on the line. But as the season goes on, it might get a bit relaxed. Yeah. That's one of those things we like to see how it pans out. Yeah. There's going to be a lot of factors in the whole thing going around and even to the point of that rule of the nominated Ruck, if they're not there, they'll just ball it up anyway. That sort of thing, like that might even change things as well. So I guess my question now is going, are there types of players that you think might benefit more from where this is? And we can almost couple it in with the fact that there probably won't be the same wrestling as Rucks that we've seen because of those rule changes. Yes. But if we look at Rucks on one asian, I mean, as you said, the umpires I can await for Rucks and to put their hand up and say, "Hey, I'm in the Rucks. Wait for me. They're just going to throw it up." If you're a Ruck, when they can't get from contest to contest and be there, then you're going to miss out on the opportunity of either winning a hit out or you know, laying a tackle or something. So I mean, my mind immediately goes to players like, I mean, Tristan Cheri is a great athlete. He's a big Ruck, but does he cover the grand as well as a Tom DeConning or as a team English or a Luke Jackson? So if you look at it from that point of view, I mean, you go as far back as like 10, 15 years ago, big Aaron Sandeland is lumbering to a contest. The umpires weren't waiting for him. They just tore it up. So you had David Monday come in and take the Ruck contest. So we could even see midfielder's taking more Ruck contest this year. DP Perth? Oh, good. Could we get some DP Perth with the midfielder's? No, midfielder's won't be classified as being Ruck, but at that time, there'll still be midfielder. Yeah. No, no, no. No, no, no. They'll still be midfielder. But we could have the forwards, could we? Like the forwards or defenders possibly do that. If they zone it up a little bit, depending on who their Ruck is. Yeah, depending on who it is. I mean, it doesn't necessarily have to be a tall play. You look a rich one. They're strong, Greek and the Ruck. No, no, really matter who it is. As long as someone's there competing, that's the main thing. So what you sign is that the dinosaur Ruckmen are gone. They're dead. No, they're not dead.
ball up number that's really increased over the years. We had more ball up last year than ever before. Yeah. Obviously, if you look at Troy, we in depth hovered around 34 to 38 a game. Overlast and you said not too much change, but it's the ball up number that's really gone up over the last few years. Yeah, okay. Have you got any numbers on which rucks were more likely to engage in like a bit of physicality, even at the CBA rather than a running jump sort of ruck man like just to the eye, someone like Grundy last year, really like cut off the run up of the other ruck man to just use his body to get a hit out. If you got any numbers on like who would have benefited from those type of encounters? Yeah, I do. I do actually. So I guess here we're looking at 10 advanced ball up. So I think that's the main one. If the new rule coming in, you can't sort of wrestle anymore, you can't show your strength and sort of try and win the ball that way. You need a jump and launch at the ball, which is the way it was some time ago. So the one stat here that'll obviously drop off significantly and this goes in with what you were saying there, Cal. If the ruck heartball gets 10 advances. So that's when the ruck man takes the ball directly out of the ruck and gets the disposal away. The number one player in that stat last year was Max Gorn in 28 times. Kiran Briggs did it 23. We had Cherry and Marshall 18 and Sean Darcy 17. So there the ruck man that embraced the physical contact will the strength battle. And they obviously relied on taking the ball out of the ruck and then getting rid of it. So they're going to have to change the way they sort of attack those 10 advances. Interestingly, you mentioned Grunney. He only did that twice, which surprised me when I did stuff that number. I think back to when he was a con, he was one of the best players in the comp for taking it out of the ruck and getting rid of it. He's taken that part of his game. It's no longer part of his game. So you just would rather try and win the hit out. And the other two sort of key place to look at here are Tim English. He did it six times and Luke Jackson only did it twice. So they're a ruck man that launch and run the 10 advances. They don't rely on the wrestle and try and win it that way. So yeah, that is the one number that will drop this here. The ruck heartball gets 10 advances because it's a lot harder to sort of take the ball out of the ruck if you're launching at it. That is super interesting. And that's probably like, you know, we've got all these gut feel things of what stuff will look like, but those numbers will be able to see those. And you did mention as well, you know, we'll have a lay the land after the first half a dozen rounds or whatever. But is it something that you've seen? And I guess this has you've been in the game for a long time. So when new rules get brought in, like, do we see over correction early on? Do the numbers spike a little bit differently than what they will and things then even out as such later on in the season? I think they do even out. We could see little spikes here and there. I mean, I'm just going to touch on the couple of things I've read online recently. Just some of the more experienced rucksacks and still not knowing how to sort of take these new rules in. I read last week that Rolio Bryan at an intra club was sort of a little uncertain what he can do and what he can't do. We've also seen Joe and Whit come out and say similar things. So it's going to be one of those things that evolves as the year goes on. But we are going to see maybe a few anomalies early around as players sort of adjust to the changes. And clubs as well will be all different with what they do because we'll see some that and that's probably the other one that we didn't mention. The rule changes that we do now have, well, we've got rid of our sub thankfully, but we've got our five on the bench and some clubs who traditionally have gone one rough might actually go a second one. Yeah, they could, but I mean, every club is going to be different. That sort of thing. You know, some might go an extra ruckus and some might bring in another mid. And I mean, if you bring in mid in, it's going to probably put your mid rotation there because players are generally, you know, they're only coming off the gun, mid-rounding, coming off once a quarter and they're set rotation. You know, for example, so I like a Zach Merritt comes off between 16 to 20 minutes in the first quarter, has a spell and then comes a back on. So if they are to bring an extra mid filler in, it'll put that sort of rotation out. But I mean, yeah, I guess it's horses for courses. Some clubs might go for a hybrid. They can play wing half back half forward, although they may even go for, you know, as I said, or another ruckus. So it's one of those things where each club will be unique in what they do there. Do that, do any of the changes make you think someone is going to actually benefit? Because we're very doom and gloom. But someone's probably going to come out and go, you know, whoa, this has worked to them perfectly. This is made for them. Is there anyone that springs to mind for you that it will actually benefit? I think it's probably somewhat like a Luke Jackson, as I mentioned earlier, is one of the most mobile ruckus in the game. And the one positive or the one benefit for Luke Jackson is he also places a forward. I know this here we can only pick him as a ruckian, but he does spend a fair bit of time forward. So he's a player that could probably benefit from these rules. Just because of his athleticism, what is so athletic? And you just seem going around the ground. Yeah, he's a very good player. He likes winning the ball. Inside, outside, you can do everything. And, I guess the fact that Sean Darcy misses the benefit for him is his numbers actually go up. So he averaged around 103 last year without Luke Jackson, sorry, without Sean Darcy, which is a really good number. But when they play together his numbers are still like, hey, it's not like they're, you know, disastrous. He's still serviceable. But I think the expectation is Darcy should miss some guns this year. If he's receiving things to go by. So that's why I reckon he's one of the better players. Yeah. All right. Well, Faisi Freke, thank you very much. A couple of really quick ones, though. CBAs are still there. They're not CTAs or anything else. We're still calling them bees because of the balling up. No, there's CBAs for us. Nothing changes. Their business is usual, even though obviously the edit is getting thrown up and it's not getting down anymore. Just for you guys, warning sent through a list of our players he wants to get DPP this year. No, he hasn't, although he's very keen for talking a little bit. There you go. There you go. We'll see how that one goes. No, I mean, if in the day the numbers that drive DPP is nothing I can do about it. The number of messages you get for morning. That's the numbers. No, exciting. We've got DPP's and maybe some DPT's during the year as well in this season. Thank you, Freke, for your time, mate. That was very, very, well, I'm going to have to listen to that about three times. We went back over and make sure that I've got all of that as we look at these rocks. Very, very sexy is the word. I think you're looking for a dog because that boy is Freke. Husky today. Dayum. Thanks for coming up a bit of a cold guy. I do apologize for a boy. I know. That's great. Well, thanks mate. Get ready for this season. We're looking for all of your numbers. All right, thanks, Rose. Right, that's what we wanted to know. That's some hard numbers here that really clarify a few things now. Go ahead, hit up at Fantasy Freke. Oh, if you need some more tips. That'll be happening. Do you feel a little bit? I don't know. Like you start was wrong. You start was wrong. I still want that double check. I think they need to challenge Rose. Never wrong. Gale. So you're working with him for 20 years. So your gut feel compared to he's I need to see the numbers just to be 100% sure. Now while we're calling each other out, your question you wasted a bit of time, which one? Warny doesn't ask for DPP until we've done our drive. I actually know who he's got. He's not going to waste his time now. My bad. Right, we are talking rocks. We're not talking DPP although I reckon we could see probably as many rucks as we've seen all other position players gain rock status. We definitely can. And vice versa too. Could we see some of these rucks get forward status if we're getting the, well, if they're doing the dual rock thing. I don't have lost confidence in my. In what? Well, get your confidence back, Rose because it is time too. Keep on rolling, baby. Oh, yes. What have you got? You only have to pick two of them. Do you have what? Yeah. And my least confident line. Seriously, even like Freaco's obviously just clarified a lot, which helps, but well, no, it didn't help. It just makes me even more confused. So I, I just feel like I am backing in. Speaking no Tim English at number one. Right. And it's for a number of reasons. Does he feel like the safest one or something? Well, he certainly never takes advantage of outbodding another rock anywhere around the ground. He's more of, he's always the run and jump kind of guy gets pushed around. So this will suit him like this potential tiny spike there that he could gain from this. His ability to work around the ground. They use him again. Remember that he had that year off using him? Yeah. They went to ignoring him like he was a big lumberer. Yeah. Well, they use him again now through all their transition, everything like that. So I think his ability to be an extra mid just puts him at number one and realistically, his numbers the last few years have been elite anyway. So I got him here. So one 11105 and one 19, he's last three. He's not a guy that they'll have to ever struggle to make the rock contest either. Lucky covers the ground. He does really well. And what was his season? High career high. Oh, it was big. It was big. Look at those high teens. One teen. It was. My number's about one off today by average, but I think it was about 178. That sounds about right. Someone check it quickly. But so Tim's a 70 and it's somewhere, even if it was a decimal point. If we round it up, we're down. So Tim is number one. Right. And I'm borderline getting confident with that. Okay. Now I'm still not considering starting him because of that vibe. Yeah. And there is still that, you know, a little bit of maybe. So he's number one. Number two, this is where I am really.
battling. There's three in the mix but they all take advantage of their body and outmustling the opposition. Whether it be for a head out or for possession. But based on the second half of the year and where he was gaining just bulk points through possessions, like mid-fueled at a type numbers, I have had to go with Brody Grundy who has wound back the clock since Dean Cox. Yeah, he's rock-pig style with Dean Cox overseeing him in the rough. And that's been the big thing. It was not as good the year before and then. He was, didn't look himself. Coxy becomes the captain of the coach. And now anyone who's played fantasy for a long time remembers Dean Cox was an extra midfielder. Oh yeah. Massive unit covering ground, cracking possessions. And that's what the fantasy rock goat. Yeah, 100%. He made it a cool position. He did. So, he nearly had 40 touches in a game. There you go. 40 touches in a game of 39. But really, he did. Another one that can rack posse like that. Max can do it on his day. So he's obviously riding the mix. Max is also someone who is ahead of the game once he gets, once things change. So he made a meal of it in their first interclub. He gave away like eight free kicks or something like that. But he's a fast learner and he's still aerobically elite. So I would not be surprised at all if all of a sudden his mark count is up to ridiculous numbers, not running to that contest, but dropping back an intercept, intercept, like ridiculous stuff like that. So he could go bang for different reasons, access to different points. But he's number two, a three for me probably. And then X, I'm a massive X fan. But he has to be fourth out of that group, though. I think he does. Based on, even if so, you know, Friko, I mean, incorrectly, he was one and a half off, but said there are six and a half extra. That's two. That's what two tackles for X unless he's really angry and it could be three or four. So that's why he's dropped back for me. Right. So X average seven tackles a game. Yeah. You know, so and it'll be down to five, five, two or something. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Which is nearly ten points. Round up. Yeah. All right. So that's what the rolling 22 is. Yeah. Just to clarify, that's who Roy thinks will be the best two. If you go by the average, or what are you starting and what's again, anyway, let's have a look at our classic and what we will start. We'll start with just the most selected player of the racks. And 42% of teams is Tristan Sherry. Yeah. Next, Erie is sitting there. It was almost a little bit of an automatic pick because we like to look at, oh, GZ dropped ten points per game. Yeah. It must be value. So price it is 105 that he is there at his one point one oh one million dollars. We've all got him. Yes. He's probably someone that may be disadvantaged by these rules without a doubt. I think so. With all the, you know, information that we're gathering. And like Friko said, going to be hard until at the top level, we actually have some numbers to work with. But projecting, he doesn't seem suited to benefit from the changes. But he still feels like value. So what we like about him too is at North Melbourne, don't have an early buy. Correct. Now the early run cow. It's a good run. It's a good run. So he's up against Port Adelaide, whether that be a sweetie or Dante. However, that looks whenever you say he's up against, well, it's a bit of a side of it. That's green. Then he's got West Coast. Right. Lenny. Oh, right. Colton. And then it just, it's got a nice little run early. So that's a really nice. So even if these rules are bad for him, he still crunches those. I can't see. I can't see. Yeah. I can't seem being worse than 105. No, which is why it's a safe pick. So his floor from that 105. So this is a thing. I think I'm going in. It's a very negative mindset about it. It's almost a thing of going how much can they draw? Yes. Yeah. He maybe doesn't drop heaps from that 105. No. Whereas others could go a lot more. If it wasn't for that drawer, I would be shopping elsewhere. Yeah. But he could go full based on my list. And we know what it does when he goes full. It's at nasty. Nasty. Nasty. Now early on, Kiran Breaks was the. Okay. Two of choice. And I don't know if that's because that was Roy's team reveal that came out. I think it's not an awful one because we're looking at him. He's been in the 90s. Yes, he has. Yeah. Average. These are averages. And was a low 70. Yeah. Like basically 70 last year, which that's another one that you go. There's a little bit of value. They've got a buy. But it's a way to save some cash, especially in this unknown time. That's exactly right. I'm with you on that. So I don't mind the idea of not putting too many eggs in the rock basket. And that's a reason for it. Yeah. Imagine if like and it's not because you think he's even going to get to the 90s. No. That's 70. He can't drop. Maybe not. We're an 80. Exactly. So like let's say disaster strikes and they all they're all dropping like 15. If you're only at 75, you're not dropping 15 from that. So he'll be able to he'll get to that. But if these bigger boys dropped 15, you got a bit of a disaster money leaking in that department. So that's why I don't mind the idea of and that's the hence why he was in that team dog. I wasn't trying to send people a guard or whatever. Yeah. But that's why I think that is in play. That type of moment. Did your boy care? The difference between X and Briggs in price, about 350. Yeah. That's that corky up to look someone changes your whole team. So your R2 is so important. Yes. So he's in 14% of teams now. That's so odd. But Luke Jackson's the one that's risen a fair bit. He's in about 24% of sides. And for a couple of reasons I reckon one is that we've seen a Sean Darcy little calf meek or whatever that was for him. But there's a talk of him being a midfielder is one thing. And again, almost off the back of the Freco conversation, this is the stuff that we've been thinking. He's probably one that he's elaced affected by these rules because he is that unicorn he is the guy that can do this. So Roy, we've got him. At the moment is our R2. Yeah, definitely. And in a department that I've been lacking confidence in clarity, he's one that I am 100% comfortable with because that is true. They do see him as a midfielder. And that's a massive bodied midfielder. You think about him in the Ruck. He isn't run and jump guy, basketball background if you don't mind. Addition to it. But he's work around the ground and his versatility ways that he can score. Plus he's been like shadowing a bit of so wrong. You think about so. He was LJ size. Exactly. Like it's I think it's a safe place to go because he's not dropping from that. Yeah. So what's he out there? 95. But absolute worst case scenario. I think he's still can go at the 90s. That's worst case scenario. Yeah. But he probably should maintain. If not. So right. Oh, no, I think he can improve. I think he's in for a monster. I think people forget that he's actually a beast. Like he's a genuine good player. Now, let's just investigate this 24. Yeah, I know. Like he's young. So Darcy out like it's bound to happen. The big fella. And while he's done that car for again. Yeah. Like that's not good. With that, they have actually bought Coxy over there as that Ruck replacement and keeping LJ in the middle, chopping out as a Ruck haven't they? It seems like he'll play. Yeah. Cox will play Ruck if Darcy's out. You would think so. That's my job. Fear on it. I think he's as he said, like Fricka said, Jackson was a better player last year, averaging in the hundreds. Yeah. When Darcy wasn't there. Yes. So you've also got Hayden Young to come in as well. Yeah. Now is that going to bump him? Well, that's me. He needs mid clock. Yeah. Yeah. So yeah. All right. Some other players that we can consider. So Roy, you had English as your R1 for the rolling 22. Yes. Is it the buy as well as the 111 that he's at? Yes. That the issue. Look, I can't spend over 110 on a Ruck when regardless of the fact I think English is going to be fine. There is still a little bit too much risk factor. It's like buying a mansion on a hill, but not checking the land slip before you purchase. You just got to get the test done. What's the soil doing? I know where that was going. Am I going to lose the house? Yeah. Yeah. So Max is probably a similar one then because he's 113 he averages. I see was that career high? It was career high. Yeah. You need the next test on that. Yeah. He's a soil test as well. Yeah. But no, bye for him. No. So that's good. So you'd be more likely if they were neighbours. Yes. And be safer to go. He would. Yeah. If the Ruck rules didn't change, so Grundee probably would have been a guy that we would have definitely considered. Because he's basically priced at his 107 that he averaged, but remember what it was. Back to the Ruck.
back up the season 120 plus. - Yes, there's a lot of people on the phone. - Way, way, way. - And then a lot of other guys, we have so many boy players. That's one of the issues with anything that we're looking at here. But one of our favorites over the last couple of years has been Royal Marshall. Now that he and TDK are together, like both of them are just a-- - It's a disaster. - And they've got a boy. - Yeah. - It's a disaster for those guys. - Yep, that's a big fat knife. - They're no good. - No, no good. - Just want to throw out their care. - You'll make sweeties. - Yes, well, that's not-- - That's not because of Andy. - Oh, no. - I did that with Briggs, he as well. Late last year. What, I'm not believing it. I'm not believing it. - The report out of the year was a seven-year report or something like that saying that, Vizentini's probably the number one guy. - Okay, so he was interviewed, right? And he was like, I want to be the number one guy. - Yeah, for course you do, right? - Who said that? - He's. - He is, he's the right. So, he could be, the issue is, I don't see it. I don't see it. Now, I've got connections at port. - Yeah. - That's probably as strong as your connections at port. - Yeah, that's strong. - I just can't see it happening. Do you think they played together? - Well, Briggs, obviously. - Well, yeah. - These are way, the Alhambel's are sounding over there in port Adelaide. I don't think we can touch either of them. - No, I fear cold. (drums) - Are there any cash girls? - Holly down, maybe not. And so this probably goes about what our structure could be here for our R3. So the cutler names there that are floated, Cooper Duff title. Okay, so he's a draft, he got the Ruck Ford status, which is handy in itself to have that, but also probably plays for West Coast. - Hmm. - Does he score? Oh, this is my concern at the 338K, which he, you know, that's all right. I don't know if he's going to put on enough points to make him worthwhile for something I'll talk about in a moment as well. - Yeah, okay. - So that price is even 32, right? So what is he? - 45. - I don't know if he cracks 50. - I know. - 'Cause he's highly owned at the moment. - Yeah. And so, fair enough. - You know, we like 30 green dots and making cash and all that, but easy gonna make much cash. - Well, that's the concern there. The other one is Liam Reedy. So he's at 394K. I'm not sure where he sits in the side there. Does he play, and if he does? - Yeah. - Pitbull's the number one. - Yeah. - It's the world wide, yeah. - World wide's number one. - But for how long? - Yeah. - Right, okay. - Well, I know. - Oh, no, it's not like that. - I think they're back in him in for the first part, which is not great for us for fantasy if you are a pitigate Reedy. - 'Cause you think about Colton, they're not exactly in the window, are they? - No, you wouldn't think so. - Pitbull's got a fair few gray hairs. - He's at $2,29. - Oh, God, he went gray earlier than you. He's only one year older than Tim English. - Cameron didn't go gray. - Pitbull, pitbull. - Oh, well he's fine. - Yeah, Cameron went gray in one hair wash basically. - He basically did, yes. - Well the black one else. - He was a guy right after you did. - But yeah, I think Reedy, so some of his numbers were right in Waffle. - No, they were great. - Yeah. - But I just don't know, Rook Kastroy. - I've been very, I apologize. 'Cause I love World Wide. I didn't know he was that young. - Yeah, he is. - Um. - But yeah, I think they want Reedy. - And if you are looking at popularity, like there's a few other guys there, it's mostly 'cause I got the Rook forward status in the basement price. I like Jeff White's son, for example. He's in that mix. But my suggestion of what I'm thinking is going with that R3 as someone that doesn't play. - Yeah. - So you're gonna enter the year with 29 gray dots and one stops on. - Two reasons. - Hit me, dog. - Loophole? - Yeah. - Oh, now I'm interested. - So we've got, the two reasons are, it's always the safest place to do it in the Ruck line, that position. - You're talking Cappdyn, loophole. - Cappdyn, loophole, okay. - Yeah. - So you've got that there and, yeah, that's the simple thing for that. The other side of it, and this is the two reasons, or is it part one B or whatever. But is because we've got our Tom and Graham threshold rule. - Yeah. - I want my players playing on the bench, regardless anyway, in backline field, and on the forward bench as well as utility. But in that, in that Ruck line, it doesn't matter as much. But in those other lines, I want that safety net of my emergency, maybe needing to count if I get that early injury and all that sort of stuff because of that Tom and Graham. - And he's a riskier. - So therefore, look at that now. - We're in high positions. - Harry Barnett, he's been a member of the Warn Dogs before. - You've gone full nerdy here, and I like it. - Yes, so I've gone through these when they play. And because you want your loophole player playing later in the round. Sunday, Sunday, Sunday, Saturday night, Sunday, Sunday, Sunday, Saturday, Sunday, Sunday, Sunday, Sunday. - Okay. - Sunday. - There's lots of the Sunday gaps. - There was a pattern. - Yes, I can confirm. - So therefore, you've probably got the option to be able to make that work in that position to make him your captain, if you want to take your voice captain. - I think it's a, I think it's a pattern. - And this is where it goes back to your coop of duff, tightler, and maybe ready. - Yeah. - Like, will they be putting on enough points to make that worthwhile? They might make a hundred grand in eight weeks. Is that enough? Maybe not. - You imagine your captain getting a 150 and your cart, so your voice captain getting one free, and you've got no access to getting it. Whereas that plays the next time. - Well, okay, don't. - I do not, I'm normally a 30 green dot guy. - You are. - But I reckon last year, this is my memory of getting an old man, like you, Calvin, - Yeah, agree. - But who do I have there? Might have played, oh, we probably had Boidey, but then that was a waste. - Oh, how can you say that? - But then the must have been someone else that have had as well that just didn't play or score and might have played one game. All they just churned away and got nothing. - No, no, it's hard to generate the cash to upgrade your team to where you wanted if you have too many of them. - Yeah, isn't it? - So, I'm throwing. - That's the same throwin'. - That's the same throw, but then put more time and effort into maintaining green. - Yep, else will. - And that's gonna be a story of this year anyway and itself, I think. We are gonna be trying to maintain our benches better. And maybe holding on to some guys that could be a thing. That might be a story for another day. What are you guys doing, saying? - Same. - You're locked to me. - I am now, yes. (laughs) - All right, draft on. Little bit different for this episode. - Okay. - We're gonna actually draft the top 15 racks and five each we're gonna do here and see what our rankings can look like. The draft kit will be out soon. You'll be able to see what they look like and that might still be adjusted as we go through because we're learning so much as we go. - Right. - Kale, you were the captain of the racks. - Yep, love 'em. - Your content is gonna be a little, I can tell already. What's those two little fingers, jumping away at that before? But I want you to take us through and I can probably guess that you just copy Roy's Rowland 22 with your pick one in the draft. - I may not do. - You know, draft can be a stressful 60 seconds. - Okay. - So pick one, I will be going with yes Roy, Timmingley. - Yeah, good, he's off the board. Roy, pick two. - Well, I've gotta go with the branding now. - Yep. - Well, pick three, it's Max Gohan. I've got Max probably clearly ahead of X in that thing. I think they're like on this little tier. All three of those could all go in the first round too. What I'm seeing in some drafts already. - Yeah, that's justifiable. - All right, Kale back to you. - Back to me, I'll go with X then. That's a simple one. - That's a simple one. Look, someone who often is forgotten, a forgotten man, I'm gonna take him. This is slightly uncomfortable, but I'm gonna take him ahead of I bet. I know who you'll take after me, dog bet, I'm going Darcy Cameron. - He should be all right. - I haven't talked about him yet, but I think he's someone that should be okay. You would think so. - Yeah, I agree. - 'Cause he's a new competitor's with him. - No, he covers ground, takes marks. - Yeah, I like it. - So I'm going him. - All right, I'm gonna look Jackson then. - Yeah. - Number six. - Yep, fine. - I feel like it's early. - Well, it is, but I need to talk him at five. - But then when would I take him in the actual draft? Like he's probably still three or four, five rounds in. - It is. - There's gonna be a gap here between these guys. Those first three in the first couple of rounds. - Jesus, I have to be getting that late. - Yeah. - All right, back to you. - And he's gonna get, will he get forward status? - I reckon you'll get me status. - To be honest. - To be honest. - Yeah. - Really cool. - Yeah. - Where are you going, K? This is where it starts getting tricky. - I guess. - I guess where I think you're almost, you're panting aren't you? Those rocks, like you're just holding off. - Be told on these guys. 'Cause who are you feeling confident in having me? - Well, the science boys are still there, but I'm actually gonna go with, he's a doner soul, but I'm gonna go with Mickey. - Yeah, I think so. - Wow. - Lloyd Make off the table. - I've talked about Reeves. - Okay. - It's pre-season, they always talk about guys like that. - Yeah, I would not like picking me. - No, I don't think. - You gotta pick someone, Doug. - Well, who are you going with next? - Well, this is the tough one. Now, this is where everyone's going to get into the draft, and those ones that we've all talked about are off the board. - And you're scrambling. So this is where, this is gross, but I default to a name. And Rowan Marshall's name is as good as anyone in the comp and his numbers reflected. So I'm gonna have to take Rowan Marshall there. - Could get forward status. - Yeah, well. - So that's a bonus, you think. - We'll get forward status. - Doug, will he get forward status? - Get on the free kick. - Because I can feel it. - If I draft him. - The conning is the number one rock. - Yes.
So where's Marshall going to be then? - Forward. - So he'll get his forward status. Now this play here could win you the draft. If Deconin goes down with an injury, Marshall's got forward status. - Ooh. - You've got the second best forward in the competition, all of a sudden. - All of a sudden? - Yeah. - So I'm going there, she ugly. - What? - Could be good. - So I'm taking Deconin, then I think I'd take him ahead of Marshall. - Ooh. - Yep. - God. - What you're really doing? - I'm better player though. - Yeah, just because he's the number one runner. - Would you? I did not hesitate with that one. - Oh. - No, I'm going, I can see your justification. One's sitting forward, one's running around near the ball. - All right, check. - It's getting thin now guys. I will be going, we have to do it just for, you know, the sake of going the big fella. I'll go brigsy. - Why? - Because I love brigsy. - Oh, that's you just giving it away. I can't allow it. - No, I'm going brigsy. - You went brigsy. - Yep, brigsy goes, what's that number? - Pick 10. - Whoa, that is early, Cal. (laughing) - You did that. - All right, well I'm going to go with Nank. I'm just backing in the consistency, the tackle game. - Might miss a couple of games, but he just, you'll be right. - And like in a team that struggles to score, Nank is still rolling the legs over at about 90 a game. It'll tackle 10 times a game, a few times throughout the season, get your 150, win you the round. So it's Nank for me, there. - Well, I'll have to say, witty then. Don't love it, and I wouldn't feel massively confident because I reckon Moilly's not far off. - You'll have to handcuff that. - Yeah, and that's probably strategy that you would do. If you're getting them to the slate anyway, he's cornered the last rock of the board. - Yep. - You're going to have to get Moilly or someone else. - Yes. - We'll try to do that. - That's kind of it. - No, I mean, someone else will do that. - Yeah. - I'll show you. - And then be a critic. - Yeah, like a fan of the day before you. - Deep your benches for that. - But that's what you'd want to try to do. Are we going to try to get back through one more round care? We've got 12. - Yeah, we will because it will make it a little bit tougher here as well. So I'll go roll you, Brian. - Brian? - McCandry. - Drafts are going to get to this point though. - That's a thing. - But if you've got flex on, that's going to be interesting. - Oh, really? - It's like one double. - If people were rocking early, they're not going to make it a little bit ugly. - You can handcuff, and that's what you need to do here. - It's a roll. - So Roy, you're going to do it here probably. Where you going? - Well, look, look. - Sean Dazs, he's averaged over 90 before, but the line through him is so thick and black now. - Yeah. - You just cannot consider it. Where's Nick Brian at? When he's fit, he's going to be their number one. - Queer. - Yeah. - He's someone I look at. - Yeah, it's a stash for the five weeks or so that it might be, but he leaves. - I would say Jordan's sweet. - Yeah, yeah, we're talking. - I'm going Jordan, but at hand, having with Dante, you'd have to. - I guess he's going to be my last bit. - Yep. - So I'm going sweetie. - I'll go. - Well, that's a huge concern. - Nick Brian, just have to, and it would be that stash, but you wouldn't be taking obviously your first pick in the rock or anything like that. - With flex on, you can wipe some of your mates out. - Of contention. - It would be brutal. - Yes. - And you would be going early on another rock, but. - So other rocks there, like Matt Flynn. - Yeah. - Like he probably, when I say solo, you'll have Cooper. - Oh, duff man. - It should be serviceable. - But he should be serviceable. But then Williams could easily be, and they don't know what they're doing. They didn't know last year what they were doing. - Ty, what? You're not heading into the season. - Okay. - Premiership favourites if you've got many stars. - No, do you? - Drafting a rock is fun. - Early. - Yeah. - It's just what actually bumps them up, because you thought with all this unknown, you might have gone, I'm not touching a rock early, because we don't know, but then maybe that's why in some of these drafts, I'm not saying rock drafts for the other. - Yeah, you have a lot of people. - You think it's stupid when you see people doing it early. If flex is on, that is a question you need to clarify before you start drafting. - You should always look at your settings in your early. If you've got that. - That's like sometimes, yeah. - Imagine if you had like the turn at the back end of the draft, and you've got a couple that you could just hit. - I'm doing it. - I will do that. - You will. - That's your, that's your pro-rogative. - You have to. - I get into time and out of that. Like, even if you feel like you're going early, and that might make you feel a little bit sick, you will enjoy the back end of the draft so much, watching your mates scramble through Nick Bryan. - It's like a couple, like a lady, big dial. Someone's getting an hourly average world. - And just even the year's it now. - Bigger leagues, like how many of your Brady's like? - We're 12th. - Well, so the 12th rack flex on. - No, you guys don't flex off. Roy's permanently flexed. - I'm safe. (laughing) - Got a question for the traders. Tweet the boys at aflfantasy or head to facebook.com/aflfantasyofficial. - So I let you up some of these questions from social so at aflfantasy's everywhere. Instagram, plenty of stories there that we work out with some questions with how we're looking. Isaac, would Sean D'Assie be a good pick up? (laughing) Maybe if the rules didn't change and look Jackson wasn't there. - Look on with. - But no. - No, but well worth considering. - He was considering. - And he was someone that had to be highly considered in that low investment plane where you don't overspending the Ruck to start. - Process 64, he was flying. - He was. - He was. - He was a flying. - Even sources said it. - Yes. - Pictures didn't back that up. - No, I don't know. - And I don't know if they were new or old ones, but then when he did the carf as well. - Yeah. - And it was only minor, but minor carf on that big cow. - Yep. - It's a worry. - Okay. - Jordan says thoughts on Nick Bryan, I guess we sort of shared them, but he's training, I think, if he was fully fit and playing round one, he would be in our calculations, especially with that idea of not overspending in the Rucks because of the unknown. - Well 614K. - Oh, it's just pervary him zone. For someone that puts 10 to 15 on that just from, and that's even with these Rucks rules, I think, because it's just their number one guy. - Now, cow, I saw your face a minute ago, just to clarify, I wasn't calling Darcy a cow or saying his carf is so big to cows. - Oh, mine and Nick and something like that. - No, I got it. - I didn't want to offend. - It wasn't, it was a bit hard for him. - I don't know, I could tell. - Well, you can't make the cow at all at all. - Yeah, but off air. - Ben says this one, go on slash in a set rocks, and in the backs get more points due to in a set marks. - Hi. - Due to the new Rucks. - Why, right? - Maybe some of these defenders as well in that could be part of it, but. - Can you say max sitting behind the bull? - Yes, he does it anyway. - Yes, so imagine now, doesn't even have to run up for the little potential one pointer. - Yes. - He's already setting up for the next one. - For the next one. - Plus sixer. - Yeah. - Okay, and this one can be for you, because Jacob's asking, "Brigs or Jackson are better starting option." Now, what is there? - 200 K or so between them. - And some. - Yep. - Yep. - You're on the brigs train, however. I feel like you are probably FOMO, because Roy and I are both doing it. You're wanting to go on the Jackson train. - Sometimes the safest ship is the ownership. - Oh, I've said that before. - So, I can go on board. - I would be jamming on you. - Oh, okay. - She sings pretty quick. I'm a Briggsie fan. - This is a car. - Oh, I barely walked up. - This is a car. - There's average 94 before, and now he's at a 70. There is so much made on the bow, not even dog could eat all that. (laughing) - Now, so, yes, there he's down here. - There he's down here. - He looks a fan. - No, he's. That's what we do. Now, the thing is that, there is massive value there in Briggs, but he's got an early boy and ownership, I'm probably following you, but I actually with Jackson. So, it is tough, but my team went on doing it, we don't stop doing it every time I go to the tour. - That's correct. - And I need cash. There's my cash. I just go Jackson down there. - I think we can hide behind, if Jackson has a slow start to the season four, or something, we can hide behind his fixture. - Yes. - Even if he's off, it's not going under 90 with that fixture. - He wouldn't think so. - Rolling lockout asks, what are your thoughts on a future guy's in Don Teve, his antennae and Lockland McHandry, that's being talked about both of them, they could get the number one Ruckspot, their respective clubs. I think the code is the issue there. - Okay. - And if you're backing in those guys as like a starting Ruck at their prices, what are you doing to get out of that? - Look, every match, Sim, we set the moment, those guys play. - Okay, because you need two teams. So that's the concern, it's a massive preseason watch, but it's also a very, very risky island to be stuck on. - The thing is, the worst part about this, we just, the answer we would say right now is the sensible one. We don't need to take big risks at the start of the year. But then, all of a sudden, leading up to the season, we see a couple of proper practice matches, looks like one of them is the number one Ruck, the other ones nowhere to be seen, they pump out in '89, we go, well, we go launching on that. - Here we go, yeah. - Look, at the moment I say no, but I will be on that boat with you, if someone does dominate the preseason and we just opt out and go them. - I like it. - Alex Legends,
long time listen, long time commenter. Sorry, no, don't be sorry because we love hearing from you. Yes. What's the latest word out of Kouten about the ruck split between Pito and Reedy? It's definitely Pito. Do you think it's playing? I think Pito is number one. I don't see how you could play them together personally, but then I think about Kouten's depth and how they play together. Sorry, word is that it's Pito, but it wouldn't surprise me if it really gets a fierce tint at some stage too. And as he's asking, can Roma be a top six forward for the end of the season? So getting that forward status, what does he do if he's a forward with his still we're still obviously playing the ruck. He still get a run in the ruck. He will push up the ground and be a 90. He can be a 90. Which would be a top six forward as a forward ruck. Yes, he can be 90. And if the conning went down, he can be a 105 110. Yeah. Gordon, hi, legends question for your ruck podcast, will the new ruck was adversely impact scoring from hit outs, tackles both or something else? Well, if there's fewer stoppages, therefore, ruck contest five hit outs will come down six point five tackles. So this is the thing and there's been a couple of questions here. Like obviously about X and what he does. That secondary stoppage. See, I love you on those. Yeah, definitely. They will be. So, well, the will be just because there's fewer stoppages. So therefore you're not going to get the second one. Like that was an opportunity to slow the game down and get your breath back a little bit X. And a part of tackle a few go. Part of my brain in that too though, the clubs are going out there. They don't just accept it. They go and see how can we make it our advantage and bring it back and slow it down how we want it to be. But done that with every other rules. Yeah. That's where it's like one of the opportunities to maybe take advantage of it. Is the increased mark type thing where Max is built for that? VGo Byzantine. The questions have been asked here now. He would be. But it looks like blackest since just ahead of him. And I reckon they'll just go with two meter Peter as backup for the ball. So all right. So because he's cheap. He would be one that I if he was the number one rock, I would actually go my 30 green dots. I reckon that would be because you're going to get your five weeks with VGo. Yeah. So he's just done the blackest. So you put blackest and in my team. Is should he still be there 100% no he's in my team. Right. No, but he's defender only. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I need roll roll roll. I was just wondering. Roll is that. No, if VGo was the number one rock, but it sounds like he's a fair way ahead. Yeah. Blacky. Yep. We'll see. What's going on Sam is asking is Kale onto something with Jordan Sweat? No, he's not. And for sure. Maybe. Zach says you're sweet. Actually an option. Laughing face. Kale. No, they listen to the poor that like podcast. Sweat is an option if he's solo rock. Right. No early boy. Good draw early, but they're too much uncertainty. And it was probably not one of my greatest calls moving on. Right. Hondsey. He had Draper. He's injured. Sounds like he's going to miss maybe the first. Yeah. Not as mean as we thought. No, but it just means I reckon they definitely play him together. Yeah. Well, you think about this. It's a foot stress fracture, isn't it? Yep. Off the back of it. Do you think he's running around in the ruckold? No. No. So you two have dodge the bird here. Whereas I'll make Kale wasn't even going to start him. Flag to the early. You two. Chesk out. No worries. Thank you later. So yeah, I suppose the best TDK or Briggs. Please. Briggs just for the price. It's Briggs here all day. Briggs here all day. Briggs, you'll be 90 this year. Slightly down on the 94. He's down in the past. Should be. Well, trap or treat. Look, Jackson. At the moment, it's looking really treatish. Yeah. I can't. He's more treat than trap. He's I can't see it. How it is a trap. No. Are there any treats in the rap though? I think he might be. Hmm. Sweat might be sweet. Sweat is a treat. Kale VO six. High traders, do we set and forget with English and Cherry or pick a solid R1 and look for value R2? That's the sort of areas that I'm softly creeping into. The right. The set and forget. Well, no, the value slash no by at R2. And that's why Jackson, I think, is a tiny bit of value. Plus there's no buy. I think we just do that. And then that's the thing. So, Sweat actually starts with a bit of a tough draw early. Yeah. But he's got the rounds for a boy which he shares with Sydney. Yeah. So that crosses up. You got good in there if you get to go that. Hawthorne may be not. But then you've got the sons, which is your patraca. And those guys, so look, it's not ideal. I think I'm very comfortable at the moment with X and Jackson to start and happy to move from there. That's what I feel like. But by the end of the year, you will want to English. Yeah. Yes. Yeah. Yeah. We can have some time to watch and see though. Yeah. That's a like a fire alert watch. But it's more of a soil test, Roy. I was staring out the window and thinking, I've never noticed that big hill over there behind my imagine if there was a house on it. Yeah. And they hadn't tested the soil. Well, you're not going to buy it, A. So yes, I got a little bit off track, but I still made a point. I think you did. Well, then the rocks. There you go. Do we have any answers yet? No, I think we got some stuff. I think we do. I think we were on the right track with that. The X and Jackson, they're both arguably slightly underpriced. So it listens to the room changes. No, boys, and they've got no boys and they've got that much green in between them. Yeah. It's green mile areas when you combine them. The downside isn't as much as other play. No, I think that's probably, yeah, except X. Why do you drop down to three tackles again? Well, it does feel like he's a player very vulnerable here that you wouldn't be totally shocked if he did drop. But what have they been doing this? Surely they're all trying to work out the best for themselves in their fancy parts. I have been talking to sources very closely. Absolutely. About X because I am intrigued. And at the moment, there is certainly nothing to be worried about other than the health and safety of everyone around you exactly. We'll see how that all looks. We've got the praki games coming up from you. Absolutely. What they throw at us. All right, the rock's done. Boys, done. We are out. These changes aim to speed up the game, potentially reducing stoppages and favoring agile, mobile ruckmen over physical, wrestling-focused players.
Fantasy impacts may include fewer hit-outs for certain ruckmen, possible shifts in scoring, and adjustments in team strategies, such as using midfielders in ruck contests or altering positional roles.
Summary:
FAQs
Key changes include no bounce at centre bounces (ball-ups instead), restrictions on wrestling and crossing the centre line, and a last disposal out-of-bounds rule to reduce stoppages. These aim to speed up the game and favor agile rucks.
Scoring could drop slightly due to fewer stoppages, but it's not drastic. Agile rucks who run and jump may benefit, while physical rucks relying on wrestling might see reduced hit-outs and opportunities.
Mobile rucks like Luke Jackson, Tim English, and Tom De Koning may benefit due to their athleticism and ability to cover ground quickly, aligning with the emphasis on running and jumping over wrestling.
If a player's disposal goes out of bounds between the arcs without a sufficient attempt to keep it in, it results in a ball-up instead of a boundary throw-in. This may reduce stoppages by about 5-6 per game.
If the nominated ruck isn't at the contest promptly, umpires will ball it up immediately. This favors rucks who can move quickly between contests and may lead to midfielders or other players taking ruck contests occasionally.
Monitor how teams adjust to reduced stoppages and changes in ruck tactics. Sample size from the first 5-6 rounds will clarify scoring impacts, as players and clubs adapt to the new rules.
